Van Roethsberger talked about justin Fields. I want to get
to that.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
Do you guys hear?

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Jerry Jones went on a went on a rant that
was interesting. Also, Dion Sanders is going the Trump route, right,
blame the media for the fact that his son's acting like.

Speaker 4 (01:22):
An a hole. That's always good. That's what you do.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
That's that's like, this is the it's the new playbook
for people, like when somebody it's actually not a new playbook,
but it's the classic playbook of guy does something that
not acting the way he should act, and media is
to blame for set actions. So I think, obviously I'm

(01:51):
uniquely positioned to discuss this because I am, in fact,
on Division one men's had basketball coach. But the other
part too, it is I'm experiencing all of the things
that coaches experience, and it's kind of a cool one today.
So we changed plans a little bit and Green Bay

(02:16):
is in the Horizon League. The team that won the
Horizon League tournament last year was Oakland. Of course Oakland
and Greg Campy as the head coach. He's been there forever.
They beat Kentucky in the NCAA tournament and so they're
kind of the talk obviously of the league, and they
did an amazing.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
Job last year.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
So we have conference Media day was today, okay in
Indianapolis at this really cool arena at the at the Fairgrounds.
It's the Colsseumet at the Fairgrounds, Indianapolis. So if you
want to know how it went down, like I got up,
there's four or fifteen this morning, four fifteen, took the

(02:57):
dog out, got them all situated, out him a little grub.
I put him in his little area where he could
sleep and chill out and hang out, and then headed
to the airport.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
And we have.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
PJ is private jet. We're Pepe Private prop plane.

Speaker 4 (03:16):
Right. That does that work for you?

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Do you like the alliteration there, Jay Stu, You you're
a big alliteration guy.

Speaker 5 (03:24):
Sure, yeah, that's three p's in.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
School, three ps the PPP private prop plane. So anyway,
our twenty flight to Indy, and we were kind of
like ballers, only mid major ballers, right, like you think
of you know PJ. You roll up, you're in a
private jet, and then all of a sudden, you know,
you get off. There's an escalade waiting, and some guy

(03:48):
opens the door to the escalade and then you hop
in the escalade and they say, you know, mister Gottlieb,
there's some water there for you whatever. And you have
like a New York Times and maybe a Bloomberg and
then they take you to the arena and then they
do an entrance video and then you meet with throngs
of media. All right, so now that back just a
little bit, just a smidge, and we had the Dennis Harrington,

(04:10):
my starred director of basketball ops.

Speaker 4 (04:12):
That's dobo.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
If you ever hear somebody called a dobo. He arranged
ubers for when we arrived. The uber was a little tight,
a little bit of a tight fit. K was rab four.
We get the videographer, we got two players, my two
players and me. We piled in women's team, women's coach.
They piled into their uber. Arrive again you think of
we roll up in an escalade and they opened the

(04:33):
door for you right there.

Speaker 4 (04:34):
N they let us off kind of across the street.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
We had to find a way around a fence, walk
through the fairgrounds, into the arena, did media day, met
with all the other coaches and our ESTEAM commissioner, took
a bunch of pictures, did the interviews, radio, TV, whatever,
blah blah blah.

Speaker 4 (04:50):
And then.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
And then back in the uber back to the PPP
that's private prop plane, back to Green Bay.

Speaker 4 (05:01):
Stopped and got coffee.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
And I'm here with you Now that's a that's a
that's a full day for most people. It's a half
day for your boy. It's a half day for your boy.

Speaker 5 (05:11):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
Yeah, and it's really interesting to be on the other
side of the aisle, if you will. Like again, just
last year I did West Coast Conference Media to Day,
Mountain West Media Day, Packed twelve Media Day, Big twelve
Media Day. And now we're now I'm I'm the I
guess the subject of the questioning, does have any media

(05:35):
day questions you want to ask me?

Speaker 6 (05:36):
I was hoping that we might be able to do
a little bit of ask the coach.

Speaker 7 (05:42):
There's a question the niece an answer, and the answer
is if only there was someone with the authority and
the wisdom to give us that answer.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
No, I'm the head coach. I get to set the schedule.

Speaker 5 (05:53):
Hold on, let's ask the coach.

Speaker 4 (05:56):
We got to ask the coach early first segment of
the show. That's awesome. Yeah in the back.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
You the really really handsome gentleman with the smoking hot girlfriend.

Speaker 4 (06:09):
Uh, mister Stewart from Fox Sports Trader, Yes, you had.

Speaker 6 (06:11):
A question, Doug are coach, So what is the what
is the burning question right now? In the Horizon League,
like what what is the hot topic among all of
the teams? Like what is the one question that all
the coaches are being asked.

Speaker 4 (06:27):
They're all being asked. I don't know what they're all
being asked.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
I'm for me, it's more the the work work balance,
how do you how do you do both?

Speaker 4 (06:38):
And it's you know, what what is this? What are
you going to play?

Speaker 8 (06:42):
Like?

Speaker 4 (06:42):
What is it going to look like? What is the
experience going to be?

Speaker 6 (06:45):
Like?

Speaker 4 (06:46):
You know?

Speaker 2 (06:46):
But I would say the question that all the coaches
have is kind of what does college athletics has changed
so dramatically in the last five years, And next year
there is supposed to be a roster cap fifteen guys
next starting It hasn't been improved yet, but fifteen guys.

(07:06):
But you can split up scholarships, which you can't do now.
Right now you have thirteen scholarships. You can have as
many guys you want, but you only have thirteen and
they have to be full scholarships. Next year you can
break them apart and do everyone. You got a fifteen
roster cap, do what you want with it, and then
you know the settlement between the NCAA and the conferences
and the divide between the Power five and the non

(07:27):
power five and what that looks like and what the
future of college athletics. Those are more of the burning questions.
But in terms of what one question asked to all
these coaches, I just think it's probably there's so much change.

Speaker 4 (07:43):
What can you expect? What do you know? And again,
I know.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
A little bit about some of these players because they
all the teams have more players back than we have back,
but there's so much unknown. It's more of just a
getting to know you sort of thing. Who's playing, how
are you going to play? And who are you heading
into conference? Heading into the season.

Speaker 5 (08:04):
I gotta follow on that.

Speaker 4 (08:06):
Yeah, go ahead, you got to follow up.

Speaker 6 (08:08):
Yeah, I get a question, let's ask the coach. So then, well,
I haven't looked at the futures for the league yet.
Who are the big contenders? I know you just said
that no one really knows anything about the league, but
like previewing, previewing the league, who are the two teams
that you're really shooting for?

Speaker 2 (08:29):
I mean, listen, Milwaukee's are are arch rival. It's also
a place that my my dad coached, and they beat
Green Bay twice last year. There's a little trash talk
in the papers between the coaches. Bart Lundy's the head coach.
He did a great job at Queen's College, who's now
Queen's University's a Division two coach. It's did a really

(08:51):
good job in Milwaukee. So I'd say UW Milwaukee would
be one team and the other one is always going
to be Oakland Youngster has a coaching change, but they've
been really really good, so maybe there's three. Those would
be the three, but IPFW is is very good. Wright
State had a coaching change, but they're pretty good. But
I would say I'm gonna go three. I'm gonna go

(09:13):
H OAKLANDW Milwaukee, Youngstown State.

Speaker 6 (09:19):
Actually it's pronounced Meliwaukee.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Youngstown State. Really good nickname. Anybody anyone who
want to want to guess nickname, you get Penguins.

Speaker 4 (09:29):
There you go, Thank you. Dan Byer Byer knows all
the nicknames.

Speaker 5 (09:32):
He's like me, Dan's a cheat code, he is.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
I'm he and I with that like Dan and I
have things. Obviously, his depth of knowledge of golf is
like a million times mine. The one place that we
do connect is college nicknames.

Speaker 9 (09:49):
And I think I was better about ten years ago.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
I feel like, well, because there's so many additions to
the division one. Yeah, can you do the whole Horizon
League conference?

Speaker 9 (09:59):
I probably not.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
I think you're I think you're selling yourself short.

Speaker 9 (10:03):
Yeah, I'm actually on that.

Speaker 4 (10:05):
I don't know if this, I.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
Don't know if this makes good radio. But I'm gonna
ask you real quick, don't look you ready?

Speaker 5 (10:09):
Yeah?

Speaker 9 (10:09):
Yeah, I'll Oakland O gosh, Oakland.

Speaker 4 (10:13):
I know there's a literation with it.

Speaker 9 (10:15):
By the way, Uh, the Grizzlies I don't know.

Speaker 4 (10:19):
They are, but they're actually the Golden.

Speaker 9 (10:20):
Grizzly, Golden Grizzlies. Okay, yes, you.

Speaker 4 (10:23):
Mentioned Youngstown State. That's the Penguins.

Speaker 9 (10:25):
Yeah, Right State Raiders. Yes.

Speaker 8 (10:31):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
By the way, does anybody know where Right State is
actually located?

Speaker 9 (10:36):
I know it's in Ohio.

Speaker 5 (10:37):
Yes, I think it's gotta be in a red state.

Speaker 9 (10:39):
It's like I think it's self of is it around
Seuth of Dayton?

Speaker 4 (10:42):
So yeah, it's Dayton. It's basically in Dton.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
Okay, Yeah, which is weird, right, you'd think that Right
State being in would be in Dayton Dayton State.

Speaker 4 (10:49):
But anyway, our nickname Green.

Speaker 9 (10:52):
Bay Phoenix, Okay, Middle Milwaukee panthers Northern k they're the Norse.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
They are.

Speaker 9 (11:02):
I do know that.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Purdue Fort wayn which used to be Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne,
not just produce Fort Wayne.

Speaker 9 (11:07):
I'm thinking like it's like jaguars.

Speaker 4 (11:09):
I have a guess, now that's that's that's it. That's
I U p U I, which now is I UI.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
MA Mastdon, Mastadont, Cleveland, Cleveland State Vikings.

Speaker 4 (11:21):
Robert Morris.

Speaker 9 (11:24):
I would say, like I'm going to guess, I don't know,
like patriots or something like explorers.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
You guys want to I don't know, and you're going
with explorers and you're going with the colonial colonials.

Speaker 4 (11:39):
I mean, it's essentially the same thing, just a different word.

Speaker 2 (11:42):
Yeah, I can imagine you're coming up with it, like,
do you guys want to do patriots?

Speaker 4 (11:46):
You guys want to do explorers? Do you guys want
to do let's do colonials.

Speaker 3 (11:49):
There's some exploration involved in that, for sure.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
There is, because why are they the I guess. I
know Robert Morris was a colonial, but it's not in
the colonies, so it's a weird nickname.

Speaker 4 (12:01):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (12:01):
Then there's I U p U I, which is now
I U I by the way because P pulled out
P being Purdue Indiana University, Purdue Indiana University of Indianapolis,
it's actually i U Y.

Speaker 4 (12:12):
And then the last one is Detroit.

Speaker 9 (12:15):
They're the Titans.

Speaker 4 (12:16):
There you go, the Titans. Gotta remember the Titans.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
Which of course kindred spirit with Jason Stewart, who's a
Titan's a caw State boarding Titan.

Speaker 5 (12:23):
Hashtag tusks up.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
Oh wait, we got another question, I believe from mister Bayer.
Is there an ask coach as coach from miss.

Speaker 4 (12:33):
Hold on, hold on, hold on the coach in the back?

Speaker 9 (12:40):
Is there going to be a point in the season
where your dual role is no longer a topic of conversation.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
No, No, because it's different, it's unique, you know. Now,
I don't think so, I mean, I don't know.

Speaker 9 (12:59):
Is that to benefit for your team? Or is do
you consider that a negative for your team? Because I
don't want to lead you in the question, but.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
No, it's a it's a great question in reality or
in the fact that it's sort of distracting to other
questions which could.

Speaker 4 (13:15):
Be harder questions.

Speaker 9 (13:17):
I think it could be a gift and a curse
for you. Okay, go I think that it takes pressure
off of your players. If things aren't going.

Speaker 4 (13:24):
Well, agreed, then it becomes about me. It's fine.

Speaker 9 (13:26):
Yeah yeah. And then if things are going well, I
wonder if you know the players will be getting enough credit.
That's what I'm curious about. I think that's almost your job,
isn't it.

Speaker 8 (13:41):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (13:41):
Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:43):
I think that was probably the part today, which is
like everybody gets so caught up in the one to
talk about that stuff, or not having coached before, not
having coached in college.

Speaker 4 (13:52):
Yeah, that it's like, Hey, I want to talk about
my guys. I want to talk about my guys.

Speaker 9 (13:57):
So and I can understand to like, when you got
the job, now you got the conference, media really hasn't
an opportunity to talk to you about it. But at
some point it, you know, does have to be about them.

Speaker 4 (14:10):
Agreed.

Speaker 9 (14:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:11):
Oh oh wait, we have another from Iowa from the
Iowa from the Des Moines Register.

Speaker 3 (14:17):
Uh, let's ask the coach, Hey, their coach, uh, during
your intransit on your public propeller plane ride there?

Speaker 8 (14:25):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (14:26):
Did you were you served any snacks or drinks on
that short flight?

Speaker 9 (14:30):
Nothing else?

Speaker 1 (14:31):
No?

Speaker 8 (14:31):
Uh?

Speaker 9 (14:31):
No service there?

Speaker 3 (14:33):
No good news is snacks drink service.

Speaker 2 (14:35):
Good news is I can put all the bottled waters
in my bag that I could possibly bring and it
doesn't set off any radar detector, you know any h
and a metal detector or anything you know insecurity. Bad
news is no no flight attendant, no no help.

Speaker 4 (14:53):
Oh, mister Byer, you have an one.

Speaker 5 (14:55):
Oh yeah?

Speaker 9 (14:56):
Was there any Was there any animas from any of
the rival schools in your interactions? Anything maybe off putting
or a little strange?

Speaker 2 (15:07):
No, No, I know most I almost the guys anyway. No,
I mean, look, do I think that when you're not around,
are there people gonna say, like, oh, you know clown show? Yeah, yeah,
sure of course, like that's what sadly, that's what we
as people do. But no, couldn't guys, couldn't have been

(15:28):
any better, any kinder, you know, just welcome, shake hands whatever.
But plus, I mean the reality is, uh, it's it's
such a tight window that there's only maybe there's probably
thirty minutes for small talk.

Speaker 4 (15:45):
And I just.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
I was I was more with my players, so not
really not really a kumbai ya whatever there was. We
met with with our commissioner and she's awesome and the
reason she's awesome.

Speaker 4 (15:59):
Is she used to work for the NCAA, so.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
Uh so she can kind of give you us a
real sense, a real sense of what's happening.

Speaker 4 (16:10):
Uh it's her name is Julie, Julie Rowe uh latch
is her is her name? Wonderful and she used to
she used to work in enforcement.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
So she's like this hasn't gone through yet, but we
think this is what's gonna happen, and here's what's gonna happen.

Speaker 4 (16:27):
And no one questions her because because if you do, you're.

Speaker 2 (16:30):
Like, I used to work at the nca for a
long time, so like oh yeah, and then we're all
kind of in a room in a locker room and
everybody just sitting around and yeah.

Speaker 4 (16:39):
I was so no that was that was? That's it?
Anything else?

Speaker 2 (16:45):
Okay, well listen, thanks for coming, and do I have
to I need to go? Do I need like an
exit exit line?

Speaker 4 (16:53):
Right?

Speaker 2 (16:53):
Like you know all this all the coaches at all
the big football schools, you know, like over the Auburn
coach which is like ends in every interview with war Eagle,
or Michigan State coach co Green or what's his name
from USC fight.

Speaker 9 (17:09):
On, I'm gonna say no.

Speaker 4 (17:12):
I think it's super cheesy, right.

Speaker 3 (17:14):
Phoenix Rising. You just end with Phoenix Rising. How about
I'll see you in.

Speaker 4 (17:18):
San Antonio, seeing san Antonio.

Speaker 5 (17:21):
See you in San Antonio, see in the gym you.

Speaker 4 (17:23):
Need me, I'll be in the gym one. I like that,
but I kind of let it go.

Speaker 2 (17:27):
It's like, eh, kind of let it go, Okay, see
in San Antonio, See in San Antonio because it's not wrong,
because if we don't get to San Antonio, I'll still
be in San Antonio. Technically, it's not lying like he
did predict he be in San Antonio and sure enough
here he is.

Speaker 4 (17:45):
Fascinating.

Speaker 2 (17:46):
It was fun though, like it's it's just a I like,
by the way, Jason, that you carved this out for
me because these are fun, unique experiences, which for the
first time it's it's just a different feeling.

Speaker 4 (17:57):
Right to be a duck coach, if you will.

Speaker 7 (18:00):
This is the best of the Done dot lead Show

about DraftKings and all they have throughout the show DraftKings.
The crown is yours. Okay, let's welcome in war Moon.
He's a Hall of Famer. I'm actually a personal friend
of mine and a guy who I just love to

(18:49):
talk ball with sports with.

Speaker 4 (18:51):
Uh but one, We're not gonna do Lakers this time.
We're not gonna do Hoop.

Speaker 2 (18:54):
We're not gonna do Kaitlin Clark because I know you
how much you love to I'm gonna I'm gonna focus
on NFL yourry of expertise.

Speaker 4 (19:00):
You okay with that?

Speaker 8 (19:02):
I am great with that. I'll talk sports, any type
of sports with you anytime. How you doing.

Speaker 4 (19:06):
I'm doing good, man, I'm doing really well.

Speaker 8 (19:08):
Good job at the Pump Foundation dinner that youted not
too long ago.

Speaker 4 (19:12):
Thank you, thank you.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
It's it's one of the thrills to see us these
so many guys that are incredible what they've done throughout
their lives and then and hang out and hang out
and raise money for uh for Cancer for a for
a cancer ward in uh IN in Northridge, California. Let
me ask you about Tua. Okay, what do you think
do you think he plays us here.

Speaker 8 (19:36):
If the Dolphins let him. I think he wants to.
He hasn't said anything that that shows me that he's
even thinking about retirement. I think he wants to get
as many opinions from uh you know, different neurologists and
that to kind of help him with a decision. But
I think in his mind he wants to play unless
somebody tells him some really you know, bad or critical

(19:57):
news that would do with it would change his mind.
You got to remember, he's six years old, he just
signed a huge deal. I'm sure he has goals that
he wants to accomplish on the field, and I know
there's a risk if he does go back out there,
but every guy that goes out there takes that risk.
So I think he's going to look at it as
strongly as he can to come back and try and play.

(20:18):
And if he retired, it wouldn't surprise me because it
would probably be the best thing for him. I don't
think it would hurt him if he retired, but if
he goes back out and plays. I wouldn't be surprised by.

Speaker 2 (20:29):
That either, did I'm sure, especially playing in Canada and
before we checked on him, you suffered through concussions.

Speaker 4 (20:37):
Do you remember about how many?

Speaker 8 (20:39):
I've had? Six? And those are just the ones that
were diagnosed. You know, there was a lot of other
plays where you get your head dinged and you you
kind of lose it for a second before you get
your marbles back and then all of a sudden you're
able to call the next play. But yeah, you know,
football is a brutal game and everybody that plays it
under stands that when they get into it. There's guys

(21:03):
that I know, and you know, like the late Junior
Seou you know, he took his life, and I think
a lot of it was because of the CTE that
he had in his brain, and other guys that I've
known as well. So that's something that you just have
to deal with and you have to accept that it
might be part of your it might be part of
your life going forward, and it's how much of that

(21:24):
you want to accept and how much of it you're
willing to deal with later on in life, whether that
comes or not. In it so far. I'm you know,
I'm sixty seven years old and I'm doing pretty good.
I've had a lot of neurological tests to make sure
of that, but you just never know. Every day you
wake up wondering, Okay, when is maybe some of those
effects gonna enter into my body?

Speaker 4 (21:45):
You're sixty seven years old, yes, sir? Do you It's like,
do you moisturize? Like, what's the deal?

Speaker 2 (21:52):
But I know, black done crack, I got it, But seriously,
what's the deal?

Speaker 8 (21:57):
Well? My mom? You know, my mother's not ninety seven
and she's still living, and I've I showed you a
picture of her. You'd understand why. Maybe the genes that
I have, I really take good care of myself. And
you know, I grew up with a mom and six girls.
My dad passed when I was seven, so I learned
a lot of things women do to take care of
their body and their skin and all those different things

(22:19):
that I try and follow those those habits.

Speaker 2 (22:22):
Definitely moisturizes, right, guys, guys, there's no doubt. He's a
he's a he's a he's a moisturizer. Not not gonna
be ashy, but I'm he's one of those guys that
he's putting all the good stuff on because there's no.

Speaker 8 (22:31):
Way moisturize either. You got to use good, good moisturizer.

Speaker 2 (22:35):
Definitely, Bryce Young, I don't know if he's good enough,
but I don't think that's what this is as much
as he has no confidence right like, you can't you
can't go from being what he was at modern day,
what he was at Alabama to being like the very
very basic throws he's not making, he's not seeing. Is

(22:56):
that a fair assessment that that right now? It's it's
forget about talent and upside sealing can become.

Speaker 4 (23:03):
He's just completely lost his confidence.

Speaker 8 (23:05):
That their I think he has, and I think he's
shell shocked a little bit too. The kid has gotten
the crap kicked out of him the last year and
a couple of games this season. Every time I look
at highlightsing him, he's taking huge hits and as a quarterback,
you can only take so much of that. Before you
start and not focusing on the defense, but you're focusing

(23:25):
on the pass rush. Where is my escape going to be?
Where can I get out of this madness? Because you
got to remember when you're in that pocket it's like
five collisions, car collisions happening right around you, and you're
supposed to stand there and watch all that happen, but
also be able to focus downfield and throw the football.
So if you get too much of that to where
people are beating on you, there's just a matter of

(23:47):
time before you're not going to be able to have
that focus down the field. You're going to be looking at,
like I said, your escape pattern or how you can
get out of that mess. And that's what he's doing
right now. He's looking at the pass rush and he's
not able to focus down the field, and he's not
able to all the football the way he wants to,
because you have to be able to have that focus
down the field on your receiver on the secondary in

(24:08):
order to be successful throwing the football, and he's not
able to do that right now.

Speaker 2 (24:12):
Were Moon's our guests. He's a Hall of Fame quarterback
who of course knows it all because he's gone through
every element of this as a quarterback. Okay, so here's
the big question. Can you get it back?

Speaker 8 (24:27):
I think he can in the right environment, but it's
not going to happen overnight. I think he'd be better
off maybe going to another address, get out of that
situation there in Carolina, because it's probably going to be
negative until he actually gets on the field and does
a lot of great things, and then he probably needs
to sit behind somebody else. You know, a quarterback this

(24:49):
pretty successful that he can look and learn from where
he doesn't have to get out on the field. And
that's what I hate about these number one draft picks
or number one overall draft picks. They have to get
on the field sometimes before they're ready before sometimes before
the organization is ready for them to play. You watch
Caleb Williams the other night. He got his tail wrecked
against against Houston. They were hitting him everywhere, and that

(25:15):
affects your confidence. And I'm sure he was rocked a
little bit after that game was over by the amount
of punishment that he took in that game that he's
probably not used to taking over the last, you know,
so many years of his college career. But sometimes when
you go to situations where an organization doesn't have the
surrounding cast and the infrastructure that you need, you're going

(25:36):
to go through that, and it's how it affects you
and can you overcome that or will it affect your confidence.
And we've seen many number one overall draft picks this
happened to because they usually go to bad teams.

Speaker 4 (25:49):
They definitely do it.

Speaker 2 (25:50):
Stug gott leaves show here on Fox Sports, right, Warren
Moon is our guest. We're talking all things football, all
things quarterback. Let's get to Caleb Williams.

Speaker 4 (25:59):
Okay, So, kid.

Speaker 2 (26:01):
Williams is the number one prospect obviously at Oklahoma, he
came in three games in set the world on fire.

Speaker 4 (26:06):
Then goes to USC.

Speaker 2 (26:08):
Good first year, second year, forces of all too much.
They have a tough year, still goes number one overall.
They build a whole new offense around him. Struggle with
some accuracy issues in the preseason and those struggles have
continued through two games with the Bears. What's your assessment
of Caleb so far?

Speaker 8 (26:27):
Well, I think he's learning how to be a more
structured quarterback, something that he was never asked to do
when he was at Oklahoma or USC. He was more
of an improviser and he was going to make plays happen,
you know, after the fact, second second what do you
call him? Second response plays? You know, after the play
breaks down. That's where he made a lot of his

(26:47):
plays in the NFL. You can only do that so
many times because those guys are just as big and
fast as you are, and you're not gonna be able
to run away from those guys like you did in college.
And he tried to do that a couple of times
the other night. It's just not going to happen. So
you better learn to be more structured. You better learn
to be more on time with your throws, and then
you do have that special ability that he does have

(27:09):
that when he needs to do that, be able to
do that and make some of those plays per ball game,
kind of like Patrick Mahomes. They had to kind of
coach that out of Patrick when he first came into
the league, but he got a chance to sit and
watch Alex Smith for a year before he had to
actually get on the field, and then once he got
out there, he understood that I can't run around here
and do all these things. I've got to stay within

(27:31):
the structure of the offense. But I do have the
ability if things do break down, I can make things
happen with my legs. And I think Caleb just has
to start to understand that. And I think watching his
play the other night. If he watches that film closely,
he'll see where he did some really good things from
the pocket. I think he was about sixty five percent
thrower that night, but he was forced to make a

(27:54):
bunch of plays at the end because they were behind
and they weren't able to run the football that well.
I think that's where it really hurt him. But I
think he's going to be okay because there's there's good
talent there, there's good weapons there, but they're still going
to have to shore up that middle part of their
offensive line. That's where he got a lot of pressure
right up the middle, and that's where most quarterbacks don't

(28:15):
want to get that pressure from. They don't want to
get it up in their face like that.

Speaker 2 (28:19):
Stut Gottlieb Show Here on Fox Sports Radio, Warren Moon
is our guest.

Speaker 4 (28:26):
What about Jalen Hurts.

Speaker 2 (28:27):
You know last year Shane Stiken leaves and the offense,
even though they got off to a ten no start,
it was clunky.

Speaker 4 (28:34):
He wasn't the same now here.

Speaker 2 (28:36):
We are two games in there, one in one, but
bad pick doesn't look like the quarterback he was two
years ago. I don't know, it feels like he's still
not in sync with the play calling with the offense.
But again we're the layman, you're the expert. What do
you see with Jalen with yet another new offense.

Speaker 8 (28:58):
Well, that's part of the problem this Will is what
third offensive coordinator in the last three years he had.
He had success with Shane uh and then all of
a sudden, I forgot who came in last year. I
think it was his quarterback coach took over his offensive coordinator,
and now he's to another coordinator. So he's he's having
to learn and I think the coordinator's having to learn

(29:18):
him as well what he does well. And one of
the problems, Doug is none of these guys play in
the preseason. So you have a new play caller come in,
you don't play much, you know, in games, and then
all of a sudden when the games start, now they
want you to be sharp, you know, like you've been
playing all preseason long, and you haven't, so they're learning
on the run. These are things, these are mistakes that

(29:40):
he should be making in preseason games. But he doesn't
play in the preseason, just like a lot of these
other quarterbacks. And I think it really affects them, you know,
those first two three games into the season before they
get their you know, their feet up underneath them. So
that's part of that's part of it. And then another
thing I see with Jayalen he's bailing too fast. He's
bailing the pockets sometimes too quickly. He's not letting the

(30:02):
plays develop, and he wants to take off and run,
and that's something he did in his first two years
when he was in Philadelphia. I want to see him
get back and sit in the pocket and let these
plays develop, read them out and throw the football as
opposed to, you know, trying to make everything happen with
his feet.

Speaker 4 (30:20):
War Moon joining us here on the Doug Gottlieb Show
on Fox Sports.

Speaker 7 (30:23):
Right.

Speaker 2 (30:23):
Of course, Warren's Hall of Famer in the Nation Football League,
Hall of Famer in the Canadian Football League as well.
Aaron Rodgers plays the Patriots on Thursday. How you know,
here's a guy who week one didn't move like he.

Speaker 4 (30:39):
Used to move.

Speaker 2 (30:39):
Nobody does in there forty but coming off an achilles
better in game two. But again I'm the nillame and.

Speaker 4 (30:44):
You're the expert. What have you seen from from Aaron Rodgers?

Speaker 8 (30:48):
Yeah, I think Aaron's just trying to get comfortable again.
You know. You got to remember he's only played up
coming into this season, you know, four plays in the
last two years, because he was heard all of last
year after the Achilles injury. So it's been a while
before he's actually played a whole football game. And he
finally did that a couple of weeks ago, and he
got a little bit better this week. Uh, he's still

(31:08):
you know, learning, learning his players. Uh, he's still having
to learn the things he can and can't do from
the from the Achilles. I'm sure what he feels comfortable
with and what he doesn't and all. And he's doing
all that in game time situation. So again, he's another
guy that didn't play during the preseason, so he's kind
of doing all this stuff. It's like on the job training.
You're you're you're playing a real game, still trying to

(31:31):
figure out what you do best, as opposed to maybe
getting that done during the preseason. So I blame a
lot of these coaches for for the slow starts for
all these offenses this year, because these guys didn't get
a chance to play or didn't want them to play
during the preseason and That's why you see these offenses behind.
They're just not they're not in tune, they're not playing
with a lot of rhythm, and it takes it's going

(31:53):
to take a couple of weeks for these teams to
really get up and going to the speed that they
want to get going at because they just haven't played enough.

Speaker 2 (32:01):
Sounds like you got some emails to return. I'm just
I'm just telling you. I hear that sound. I know
you got emails in return. We got we got bills
and we got to pay. You got emails coming in warning.
You're the best man. Let's catch up offline really soon.
I appreciate you joining.

Speaker 4 (32:28):
Stuck gotleap show Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (32:31):
So, uh, I'm gonna I'm gonna pretend that Ben Roethlisberger
doesn't have any alterior motives, right because you know, having
retired recently, most of those quarterbacks don't like Russell Wilson,
they just don't. They just don't. Guys do not like
Russell Wilson. I can tell you I don't know.

Speaker 4 (32:50):
I know seven or eight NFL quarterbacks. I know.

Speaker 2 (33:00):
Probably ten to fifteen offensive coaches, quarterback coaches, O see
offensive line coaches. He's just not a guy that anybody
really likes or maybe even knows, and so they're judging
based upon perception or maybe the fact that they don't know him,
when they all the rest of them know each other. Anyway,

(33:20):
here's what Ben Roethlisberger said in his podcast regarding the Steelers'
quarterback position.

Speaker 10 (33:24):
I like what I've seen. I like that he's getting
into it. I like he's getting the feel of it.
You know, if you told me they're one to one
or rowo and two and these are going on, I say, yeah,
we got to do something. But again, he's not turning
the ball over. They're two and zero. Big test this
week with the I think the Chargers are coming in town.
To me, if Russ is healthy, I'm sticking with Justin.
I said it last week. I wouldn't, but what I

(33:45):
saw today, I think that he has earned deserves the
right to stay there.

Speaker 2 (33:52):
Okay, I think look second game was better in the
first game. I don't think anybody thinks he was particularly good.
But I do understand the philosophy of hey, if one's
not particularly good but doesn't fit at all what you're
trying to do. Like again, if you know what they've
what they've tried to say about, Hey, all we need

(34:14):
Russ to do is get rid of the ball quick.
He doesn't see the feel well and he's always held
the ball too long. And then he's not nearly as
athletic as he used to used to be, and he's
coming off a CAF injury, so it ain't like he's
gonna be run around back there. If worst case scenario
or justin fields, you just take a look and you
don't like what you see, eat it and run the
football and play to your defense and your strengths. Again,

(34:37):
it's not a terrible philosophy, but you do wonder how
much of the competitiveness of people in fact you don't
like Russell Wilson plays into it. Stuck out leave show
here on Fox Sports Radio. The show is sponsored by
Draft Kings. Stay tuned because you hear more about Draft
Kings and all has the effort throughout the show.

Speaker 4 (35:12):
Now he's not getting the middle with It's time for.

Speaker 2 (35:18):
The mid I am Doug Gottlieb your host Dan Bayer alongside.
Make sure you check out his I Want Your Flex

the Bachelor or Bachelorette is Jason Stewart and then of
course I with Sam. The will filibuster without any question

(35:40):
when a topic comes up is part of.

Speaker 4 (35:43):
This as well, no doubt.

Speaker 2 (35:44):
So, So what's the discussion point today, guys O in
two teams?

Speaker 4 (35:49):
Is that what you guys want to do?

Speaker 6 (35:50):
I definitely want to get to that. But could we
do some house cleaning? Remember a week ago, each of
us went around talking about the biggest overreaction from week
one on. Could we just kind of give the listener
an update on how you feel about that overreaction?

Speaker 5 (36:05):
Uh?

Speaker 6 (36:06):
For example, I said that the Jets and the knock
on Aaron Rodgers was a bit of an overreaction. I
had thought that that he's going to probably find his way.
I think Week two kind of verified my caution to overreact.
How about your guys's choices. Were you validated by week

(36:26):
two or maybe did that kind of go against your overreaction.

Speaker 4 (36:30):
I don't remember what I said week want.

Speaker 9 (36:34):
Yeah, I don't either, man, sorry.

Speaker 4 (36:36):
Jay Man, but I remember that one. Sam.

Speaker 3 (36:41):
I do remember saying give Bryce Young more time, uh,
and that that take might be expired now its shelf
life is a it's rotten because he's been benched and
the coaching staff clearly said that he's been given enough time.

Speaker 5 (36:58):
So on Andy Dalton, Well.

Speaker 2 (37:00):
I again, I think it's a it's a confidence thing
more than anything.

Speaker 4 (37:04):
But regardless, Okay.

Speaker 9 (37:10):
I am really curious what I did say last week.

Speaker 4 (37:12):
I don't know why I said either.

Speaker 5 (37:15):
I'll access to the time.

Speaker 9 (37:16):
I wasn't here last Monday. Sorry, I'll ask Wednesday.

Speaker 5 (37:19):
Okay.

Speaker 9 (37:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (37:20):
In the meantime, I'd like for you guys to take
a look at the oh and two teams, and I
want our listeners right now, even if you're driving. Look
down at your phone and look at the own two teams.
Dan Bayer had a stat recently.

Speaker 5 (37:34):
It was the last couple of days that in.

Speaker 6 (37:36):
The seventeen game schedule, there have only been like, what
two teams that have started.

Speaker 9 (37:42):
Yeah, this is from from bet online. Of the twenty
one teams that started out oh to two since the
seventeen game schedule was implemented, only two have made the postseason.

Speaker 6 (37:53):
That's significant. So looking at the own two teams right now,
I want to kind of know which which team is
in weast amount of trouble. Doug discussed his yesterday, So
I'll have you repeat your choice.

Speaker 4 (38:08):
Uh, the to in the.

Speaker 3 (38:09):
Most trouble, least amount of trouble, the.

Speaker 4 (38:12):
Least amount of trouble.

Speaker 2 (38:14):
I don't think the Bengals are in crazy trouble. I
also I don't think the Ravens.

Speaker 4 (38:21):
Are in crazy trouble either.

Speaker 2 (38:24):
On a piece, well, I'm just telling you, I think
I think the culture in trouble. I think the Broncos
are in trouble.

Speaker 3 (38:35):
Doug, if you had to flip a coin though, between
the Bengals and the Ravens in that division, who's getting
out alive?

Speaker 4 (38:42):
That's a really good question.

Speaker 3 (38:46):
Will rise from the ashes like the Phoenix and oh.

Speaker 2 (38:49):
Look at look at you, Look at you. I'm gonna
say Bengals.

Speaker 3 (38:59):
Because they've dealt with the slow starts in the past.

Speaker 4 (39:01):
They dealt with the slow starts in the past.

Speaker 2 (39:03):
The back end of their schedule is not crazy, like
last four games of their season at Titans, Browns, Broncos
at home at Steelers Steelers twice. Obviously difficult game, but
Steelers at home like again, so Steelers at Cowboys, Titans
late bye is weird. I think Bengals are my because

(39:24):
they've dealt with a slow start. They do have some
you know, like their next two games are Commanders and Panthers,
and then they have Ravens and Giants Browns.

Speaker 4 (39:33):
I think the Bengals will be fine.

Speaker 9 (39:36):
I would also agree with that, and in fact, I
pick Cincin ninety to win the AFC North. I think
of the oh and two teams, those are the only
two teams that we shouldn't be worried about. I think
there's serious issues with the other OH and two teams,
whether it be their team construction or where they are

(39:57):
division wise. Because the AFC South is basically all OH
and two with the two and zero teams the Houston Texans.
So when the Texans already have a two game lead
through two weeks of the season, it's a pretty good start.
I think that's gonna be tough to make up. But
the Bengals Ravens debate. The Bengals have been at mess

(40:19):
of chaos these first two weeks. Were the Ravens. Wasn't
it supposed to be a carryover from the successful last season?
Try to get over that hump. Let's add Derrick Henry
and it sure again they were a toe away. But
at least the Bengals can say we've been dealing with
a lot of crap. Once that gets cleared up injury wise,

(40:40):
T Higgins gets healthy, we feel like we're gonna be fine.
Were the Ravens. I'm just kind of like, all right,
how do you write this because you're still dealing with
the same stuff that maybe you dealt with at other times.
Buddy carry Roads, who I team with up with on Sunday,
says Ravens playing down to the level of their competition
and that has not changed, or playing to the level
of the competition that has not changed through two weeks

(41:02):
of the season.

Speaker 4 (41:04):
I would I agree with you. I'd listen.

Speaker 2 (41:07):
The fact is they should have beaten Raiders, and they
probably you can't put the Raiders, I understand, and they
probably you know, could have maybe should have beaten the Chiefs,
and the Chiefs.

Speaker 4 (41:18):
You know you're playing them and the refs. Let's just
be honest. Plus it's like a toll out of line.

Speaker 2 (41:23):
But Lamar struggles to stay healthy for an entire season, right,
the Derrick Henry thing, it just doesn't seem like a
great fit. And the offensive line is not good. So
I again, and we can pick apart the Bengals, but
and they lost one. You can't lose to the to

(41:44):
enter Sam, I hear you. But you can't lose the
Patriots at home?

Speaker 3 (41:47):
Right, Yeah, I know both the Bengals and the Ravens
have been chiefd we'll just say that they've.

Speaker 4 (41:52):
Both been chieved. They both lost it inexplicable.

Speaker 2 (41:57):
Yeah, you shouldn't lose at home too, And they're both
games that you know, the Bengals probably should have won.
There's a touchdown that was called out of bounds and
it wasn't upon further review, and then the Ravens had them.
I just yeah, I just think the Bengals are going
to be better. I really don't like the Ravens offensive line.

(42:20):
I don't think their defense is a dominance bin and
I think a lot of that is how much you're
paying lam Are. And then they go out and bring
in Derrick Henry and like that.

Speaker 4 (42:28):
He's guy.

Speaker 2 (42:29):
He has to get the ball twenty five times a game,
and they're not going to play that way.

Speaker 3 (42:34):
There is such a strong culture though in Baltimore, and
I would argue it's it's strong, much stronger, maybe not
much stronger. It's stronger than Cincinnati. So I mean, like
you look at Harbaugh, you look at what he's built
over the years. They have maybe the mental wherewithal to
pull themselves out of it. But maybe you're saying the
Bengals are in a better position.

Speaker 9 (42:53):
I would also say that I think the Rams would
be a part of this conversation if they weren't so
injured and now have to host Sale Francisco and what
will be a semi home game for them, if not
more coming up this Sunday.

Speaker 2 (43:07):
So Rams are so banged up and they go to
the Bears, and look, the Bears obviously Caleb Williams hasn't
been good then Packers at home, Raiders at home. After
the Bible like, they just got to get to the
bye week and even then it's going to be it's
it's rough. Their schedule is their crossover schedule is really hard,

(43:29):
all right? So yeah, because they still have they still
have the Bills in their schedule, they go to the
Saints and the two that in the AFC East. That
feels like winnable games, right. Winnable games are when you
play the Jets and when you play the Patriots. They
play both those on the road, Dolphins at.

Speaker 6 (43:51):
Home, and the one guy that isn't injured always gets injured.
Like wouldn't you would you be shocked if over the
next couple of weeks Stafford doesn't go down with something,
especially if he's asked to do more than he has
to do.

Speaker 2 (44:06):
I saw, was it Chase Daniel said he should trade
Matt Stafford.

Speaker 6 (44:12):
I like what?

Speaker 4 (44:14):
And I don't know.

Speaker 9 (44:16):
I don't mind the outside of the box thinking, but
it is early on in the season. I didn't know
how a deal like that would go down. But at
some point they are going to need a reboot.

Speaker 2 (44:26):
Yes, they they got they got a lot of juice
out of the Orange last year that we didn't see
coming right, and then this year it's been it's been
a mess. You have two incredible wide receivers and they're
both hurt.

Speaker 4 (44:40):
What are you really going to do? What are you
really gonna do? So fascinating?

Speaker 2 (44:47):
Okay, how about this one, I'll ask I'll ask you guys,
if you if you had to bet on one two
to a oh team collapsing Vikings, Saints, Buccaneers, Seahawk, Boks, Bills, Steelers, Texans,
Chargers in Chiefs, who do you.

Speaker 4 (45:06):
Think is most likely to not make the playoffs of
those two and hot teams?

Speaker 9 (45:12):
I'd say Minnesota. I'd agree with that.

Speaker 4 (45:17):
I think that's a pretty easy call, right.

Speaker 9 (45:20):
I admit the Seahawks haven't faced a murderer's row of
opponents right now, but I also think that the NFC
North is a difficult division and that would be tough
to navigate.

Speaker 3 (45:35):
The Chargers too, I'd throw them in there.

Speaker 9 (45:37):
I think you're the real deal.

Speaker 2 (45:39):
I think the Chargers are exactly what we think they are. Yeah,
I think there's a limitation in terms of their actual ceiling,
but I think they're a very physical team and being
a very physical team and being a team that's running
the football, even if they have get running backs banged up,
that's going to keep Herbert playing most of the entire season.

Speaker 4 (45:58):
I think they're going to be good, solid.

Speaker 2 (45:59):
I think they're gonna win ten eleven games. The Seahawks, Dan,
can you tell me if you agree with this? I
think this Dolphins game is a huge one. Dolphins starting
a backup quarterback. They're playing at home, chance to go
to three and oh before they go to Detroit. They're
gonna beat the Giants at home. If you can get
to three four, you know, four wins in your first
five games before you take on and they always play

(46:21):
the Niners well. And again, here's the schedule part that
you like. Seattle's always a difficult place to play, and
they some of those tough games they get at home, right,
they get the Packers at home, they get the Bills
at home, they get the Vikings at home. So but
I think if you can beat the Dolphins this week,

(46:44):
I think you'll beat the Giants in week.

Speaker 4 (46:46):
But is that six or five? Five?

Speaker 6 (46:50):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (46:50):
I think the Seahawks got a real chance to get
to double digits and wins.

Speaker 4 (46:56):
Again, go ahead, I.

Speaker 9 (46:57):
Don't mind if people say that they don't think they're
going to make the playoffs, is there too And no,
I just I don't think they're fraudulent right now. It's
you know, they may be a nine and eight team,
but you know, maybe maybe they don't make the playoffs.
Maybe you know, it ends up being able to nine.
But yeah, yeah,
