in the bay? No, no doubt, you're welcome. You're welcome.
We haven't done that on this show. Have I ever
told you that your welcome story? Jase dou we used
(01:05):
to do your We used to call picks you're welcomes.
But you've never heard that your welcome story?
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Have you not.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Oh, this is really good. This is this is this
is excellent. You know, like this show is sponsored by DraftKings.
Stay tuned, you'll hear more about DraftKings and all has
to offer. Throughout the show DraftKings, the Crown is yours.
We'll talk about the Cowboys winning, the Giants covering and
by the way, the under under giants to the under.
Who said giants to the under yesterday? Oh that was
(01:35):
this guy? Yeah, that was that was this guy. Okay,
So here's the story. Here's the your welcome story. I
think you guys will really appreciate this. You'll have to
look up years. But my brother was a longtime assistant
at cal Berkeley. At cal Berkeley and when he was
(01:57):
one time they played in the pre season and I
remember the pre ninety was one of the big preseason ternaments,
if not the biggest preseason tournament. Well, I don't know
if it is that or is the v Foundation. I
think it was preseason ninety. And the first night they
played Syracuse, and Syracuse was quite good this year, and
my brother was in town in the city. They got
(02:18):
in the day before the game. The morning of the game,
I drove down to New York and I had coffee
with my brother in New York and at the time,
I think Patrick Christopher was their best players, known as PC.
He went on and had a cup of coffee in
the NBA. His brother is bouncing in and out. He's
(02:38):
been in the NBA as well. Anyway, Patrick Christopher. So
we go to have coffee and I'm like, dude, and
I think my parents were in town two to watch
the game. I was like, what's wrong with you? Like,
you're playing in New York City, the weather's nice, Mathison
Square Garden Knight, playing against Syracuse. Our mom's almater. My
dad went there for a year, Like this is good stuff.
(02:58):
And he's like, yeah, PC's got a stress reaction. He's
not gonna play. Oh oh oh oh really yeah. I
was like, well, who knows this. He's like, nobody knows.
I was like, oh, okay. So I have a really, really,
(03:23):
really good friend. I have several good friends who fit
into this, but one who's a Syracuse alum and a
complete and utter degenerate, utter degenerate, and he kept texting
me all day, like talking trash about how his orange
We're going to demolish my brother's cal Cow bears, So
(03:44):
I don't know about forty five minutes for tip. He's
on and on and talking about the spread, and I
was like, take Syracuse, you're welcome. And he's asking me,
like why would blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah. So I was like, look, take Syracuse, you're welcome. Anyway,
Syracuse won that night by like thirty or forty, right,
(04:06):
they were really good. That's essentially a home game, and
without PC, it was Alice and cards for col Fast
forward to the next night and they're playing like North
Carolina in the Consolation game. And again he was on
me about playing in the Constellation game. How you know,
(04:27):
because I ever challenged the Syracuse name, this is my
penance would be they were going to get beaten. And
I was like, take North Carolina, you're welcome. And it
was because I knew that he wasn't going to play
and the line was off. So I didn't bet it
because I don't bet sports. I didn't bet it. I
(04:49):
didn't send it out to every one of my degenerate
friends because that wouldn't be right. But one degenerate a
friend pushed me and then he was like, how did
you know? And I was like, well, my brother's the coach. Dude,
I knew he was going to play like no one
knew that anyway, that insider training. I'll give up who
it was at some point if the FBI tracks me down.
In the meantime, we started a segment on my then
(05:12):
ESPN radio show and we said it was called You're Welcomes,
and it started off as like, hey, you get a
tip from somebody, and then it was just when we
felt like the line was off, we would say you're welcome.
So let's see you're welcome story. Did you do you
guys know that one? I don't know, Jase dou I
guess we'd never.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Told that, right, I had not heard that before?
Speaker 1 (05:30):
Right, So do you just give a pick? Like last night,
if I would have said New York Giants under You're welcome,
it's the idea of I got tipped from a guy.
Just follow my lead, all right, all right, okay, thank you, Okay,
You're welcome. Welcome stuck Gottleab show, Fox Sports Radio. Let's
recap last night's Cowboys win Giants covered. Here's Dak Prescott
talking about the win.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
It was huge.
Speaker 4 (05:52):
It was huge after obviously losing two, especially at home,
coming on the road first division game. Division wins are
always tough. As I said, then you add on the
road before a long weekend put a better taste and
taste in our mouth. But at the end of the days,
as I've said, even after those two losses a couple
of weeks, you know, the past two weeks is it's
(06:12):
a process. So we're not gonna get complacent. We're not
gonna get over excited about what we've done tonight. It's
about building and it's about figuring out what we can
do better in all phases.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
But it's a lot easier to.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Do that with the win. Here's Mike McCarthy, send me
up to win this way. What was the difference tonight
with Dak and and CD getting going.
Speaker 5 (06:31):
I just think really as a whole, you know, as
a just the whole team. I mean, it's really the
first four quarter game we've played. I mean, we're you know,
it was a complimentary football game, you know, I you know,
I wish we would have been able to drive the
ball more offensively. You know, just felt like we left
our defense out there a bit much. You know, that
did long swing right before the half, and then you know,
(06:52):
they came right back here in the first driver in
the third quarter. So you know, I thought that was
very challenging for our defense and for them to continue
to fight. But I think the biggest thing was, you know,
we were able to you know, Franklin philics the first
game I called, you know, for four quarters.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
That's the first game he called the feeling, the first
game he called like. I just didn't think that it
was a very impressive game. Al Michaels agreed.
Speaker 5 (07:20):
You're kidding. Well, start offense number thirty five yard penalty,
fourth down.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
It's the eighth penalty now right, No, it's the one
hundred and forty seventh. What was that shot of you
and Frank Gifford nineteen eighty six? Yeah, you called a
bunch of Monday night football games right Thursday night and
Sunday night.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
That was that.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
I don't know, is this a world record for you
in the first half? Laundry Absolutely, thank you with that question.
Speaker 6 (07:52):
With that question, you're gonna need some new flags to
throw in the second half, least as they're filthy. Anger's kick,
we'll bounce inside the five.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
Oh my god, this is another flag. In fact, there
are two. We wouldn't lie to you. Yeah, Alice spread
down on the product. And Al's done this before on
Thursday Night football. Been a bit of a curmudgeon, and
he was a curmudgeon last night. There's just just no
(08:23):
question about it. But I think that we might want
to get to a different conclusion. I took the game
and had a different conclusion. Are you ready for it? Chase?
Are you ready for it?
Speaker 3 (08:38):
I want to hear more, al Michaels.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
You do, all right? Here's the more, al Michaels.
Speaker 6 (08:42):
Two minut a warning has not a curve. We got
another flag. It's like June fourteenth here, otherwise known as
flag days. You know, Clay Martin looks like a referee
had a central casting.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
It's like a young Terry McCauley out there.
Speaker 6 (09:04):
Besides the fact that the game is completely rhythmless, because
what's something going on with the flags?
Speaker 1 (09:11):
What do you make of the first half? Flip you
the full.
Speaker 6 (09:13):
Back in the backfield, flare him out and pass out
of his reach. Flag is down amazingly the first of
the quarter.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
Hmmm, So do we got anymore? Some more al Michaels.
I think that's it al not a fan. Can I
tell you what my takeaway is now, I just don't
think the Cowboys are they good? Now you can sit
there going like no whatever, no, no, no, no. I think
(09:46):
are expectations of them because of their record the past
couple of years is that you know, you still have Dak,
you got some of these pieces in place, and it's
pretty obvious. Their defense is not what it was and
it may not fit Mike Zimmer. Their running game is
not what it was, their passing game is not you know,
the offensive line they had to go through redo and
(10:08):
they still probably potentially a playoff team. But you know,
the last two years they were in any conversation of
that second tier to compete to go to a super Bowl,
and I think this year they're more third to fourth tier.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
I mean, listen, we can give the Giants a little
bit of credit, a little bit better than we thought. I
think the Commanders is gonna be a little bit better
than we thought. I don't think the Eagles are gonna
be as good as we thought. I do think they're
the second best team in that division, but I also
think that that division is not you know, the NFC South.
We think is better than we thought, and the NFC
East is not as good as we thought. I'm not
sitting here saying the Cowboys suck. I like the Cowboys
(10:48):
days Chuck. They don't suck. They did win the game,
but it wasn't a pretty game. They're not nearly as
explosive as you think. They lack some of the basic
parts that could make them really good on both sides
of the football. And oh yeah, by the way, like
remember this, this team was built this season with Dak
Prescott's current contract. His current contract had the largest cap
(11:11):
hit in the history of the sport, So that's gonna
limit how you build the team around you. My takeaway
from the Cowboys, instead of taking glee in the fact
that they are a way better team than the Giants
and that it was closed and maybe the Giants could
have won, is reality is Giants still aren't very good.
They're a little bit better than we thought, but the
Cowboys aren't that good and that's why they only won
(11:33):
by five points. Granted should have been eight with missfield goal.
The Cowboys aren't what do the kids say?
Speaker 7 (11:40):
Mid This is the best of the Don Dot Leap
Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
You got the fresh chef fresh she huh, man, I
haven't heard this. I'm gonna tell you when I heard
this song. Doug Gallip Show, Fox Sports Radio, nineteen ninety eight. Yeah,
we went to Joplin, Missouri, which, for whatever reason, people
say Missouri. Anyway, I do remember going out and hearing
(12:13):
this song. Jared Smith, our Fox Sports Radio betting analysts,
co host of the show Fox Sports Radios count down
to kick off, with which Wrenburg and Briho joins us
in about five minutes. We'll get to him first. Angel
Reese said she thinks the media has profited from her pain.
Angelo quote tweeted a story about recent complaints about WNBA
(12:34):
players on the toxic treatment they got on social media,
and she wrote, for the past two years, the media
has benefited from my pain and me being villainized to
create a narrative. They allowed this. Reese wrote, this was
beneficial to them. I sometimes share my experiences of things
that have happened to me, but I've allowed this to
(12:56):
happen to me for way too long, and now other
players in the league are dealing with the same thing.
This isn't okay at all. I don't Why are they
Why are so many women in the WNBA victims. Does
anybody have an answer to that one? I'm not really sure.
(13:21):
And and why is she villainizing the media? Look, she was,
She's always been an over the top kind of trash talker.
That's who she is. And I think just people didn't
pay attention. That's really all. Like nobody's carred up until now.
So now that we care and we're like, hey, you're
(13:42):
not supposed to act like that, like this is our problem.
But half of the media has been trying to put
her in the discussion of Rookie of the Year with
Caitlin Clark. That's the media too, right, So why are
we only villainized like only I don't know who profited
off of her pain though I don't know if she knows.
(14:03):
That's not how the media works. We don't profit off
your pain. It's a weird one, but it's kind of
a snapshot of this league where everybody has to play
the victim, you know, everybody has to do it, every
single one. Dan, you want to talk about college football.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
Well, yeah, you know, we were doing the Gambler and
I just wanted to make a point about something that
dawned on me last week. And I don't know if
other people have realized this, or maybe they've already realized
it from day one, But this weekend, Georgia Alabama is
going to get the headlines. And it is a huge
(14:49):
game because it's two verses four. These schools didn't play
every year in the regular season, they would meet. We
know why. It is an enormous game, and it is
a big game too when you think of what is
ahead with the college football playoff. But what dawned on
me last week and watching Illinois Nebraska was how big
of a game that actually was. And it wasn't about
(15:11):
Nebraska being back and can they remain unbeaten. It was
a big game because he had two teams during twenty
second and twenty fourth at the time that needed that
game to vault themselves into the conversation of the college
football playoff, and whoever lost that game would take a
pretty significant step back, while whoever won that game is
(15:33):
now on the cusp of possibly being a team that
could see themselves in the twelve team playoff. And it
is a ramification that I didn't know how far it
would trickle down to, but it dawned on me watching
that game last week on Fox On how important it was,
and it's a really big deal. Now for an Illinois
team that goes to Penn State is more than a
two touchdown underdog to go. And if you were to
(15:57):
knock off ninth rank Penn State in that atmosphere in
your Illinois currently ranked nineteenth in the Ape Pole, you
are putting yourself in at a legitimate shot at being
in the college Football Playoff. And it's not even that game, Doug,
You're alma mater of Oklahoma State needs to beat Kansas
State right now. They need to win this game this weekend,
(16:18):
so you don't go back to back losses and kind
of drop out of the conversation. So I like this
with the twelve team playoff, I wasn't always a fan
of the expanded playoff, but we talk about talking about
more teams, especially at the end of the year. I
actually think we're talking about more teams way earlier in
the year than I ever thought that we would. Now,
there are may be times for other teams to make
(16:38):
up stuff, but you don't get to face a ranked
team every single week of the season, and so these
opportunities when you have these lower ranked teams meeting each other,
I think go a long long way in determining who's
going to be in the field of twelve.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
I think that's really fair. I think the other part too,
it is we just we have no idea, right, we
have no idea what it's going to look like in
two or three weeks. And you know, Clemson's got a
Stanford team that just won, didn't They beat Syracuse on
the road, right, and Clemson comes in they scored sixty
six and fifty nine last two games. Let's see, because
obviously they're embarrassed by Georgia, but they have some opportunities
(17:13):
with the down Florida State team, with wake Forest in
the road before they get the Louisville at a home
like not crazy, you think they could climb back in
the conversation. So I'm with you. I do think that
it's more interesting than.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
We would have if you're if you're an Illinois team,
and I'm just gonna use them because they used them
as the example off the just off the top of
the show. You've got to win at Nebraska, big deal.
And now you go and you win at Penn State.
If you drop your game to Michigan in a couple
of weeks and maybe lose to Oregon. That's not going
to kill you. They also have to win against Kansas
(17:45):
earlier in the year, and you have a winnable schedule
on the way out. So this work that you do
here can really pay dividends down the line. And Louisville
Notre Dame is an interesting game. We think that Notre
Dame's gonna maybe get some favoritism. We said after Week one,
all Notre Dame beat in Texas, A and M, they've
locked their spot up in the playoff. Well, then they
loose to Northern Illinois, and now you have a Louisville team.
(18:07):
By the way, it's going to have to bust to
South Bend four and a half hour drive because of
the storm that's hitting everywhere and wreaking havoc with travel.
But that's a pretty big game when you come to
looking at the college football playoff. So I'm I'm all
for it. I think it's a real big positive that
I don't think we necessarily looked at or thought would
be the case when we expanded. I thought we would
(18:29):
look at the end of November and say, oh, yeah,
there are more teams involved. But it has a wider
ranging effect nowadays.
Speaker 1 (18:35):
Yeah, I mean, listen, I still think when we get
to November, they'll be maybe twenty teams involved, right, and
then you have over one hundred and twenty five teams,
So there's a lot that are playing for nothing at
that point in time. But it is much more interesting,
much more interesting right now, much more interesting right now.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
If you're in Oklahoma, yeah, you can throw it. I
was just going to say, if you're an Oklahoma State
fan and you win this week, now you do care
what Illinois does. So maybe you're watching them, and it's
going to make it a much more national sport in
that way, because you're going to look at other teams
that maybe you're competing with, or that you're going to
need the jockey for position for if you want to
get back into that race.
Speaker 1 (19:14):
That's fair. Yeah. The year that we had what's his
name that we were just talking about, Kensey Hughes, Kensei Hughes.
That was our first year, right.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
It was, Yeah, we played the North Course that year,
I think, yes.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
Yeah, I don't remember much about that one.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
That was it.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
Farmer's Insurance used to be our biggest sponsor and we
go down there for the Farmers Open, and that was
my first year going there. We went, I went to
drinks the night before and then we teed off after
Tiger Woods, and so I just desperately wanted that entire
thousand people to get as far away from as possible.
And I was in bad shape. I was in bad shape,
(19:50):
bad I was. I am not a drinker, I am
not a partier, and I was that night and I
was in bad shape. It's all banged up. Second year
took it a little bit more seriously.
Speaker 5 (20:01):
We won.
Speaker 1 (20:02):
That's that's what happened. Oh, that's that's that's what happened.
And the third year we had Hunter Mayhn and we
just had a good time, just had a good time.
It's Doug Gotlib Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Let's
welcome to Jared Smith. He's our He's our Fox Sports
Radio betting expert, betting gambling expert. You can check out
on a Foxport tridios. Count Down to Kickoff with riche,
Ornberger and Bryano airs each Saturday between nine am and
(20:24):
New and Eastern time. Listen live on any of our
Fox Sports tridio Phillips on the iHeartRadio presented by Bett
m g m uh. Let's uh, let's let's let's have
this conversation here, Jared we go. Let's start with the
u n LV situation. Okay, un l V versus their quarterback. Now,
some locals are trying to save this deal. What ends
(20:45):
up happening with the with the running reps?
Speaker 2 (20:47):
Yeah, I did hear actually some local casino owners here
in town even wanting to try to get involved. Obviously,
some regulations might might some corporate red tape aft to
cut through there. It will be interesting. I do think
this is kind of a fork in the road. And
we've you know, had to embrace so much change in
college football over the last few years. This seems like
(21:07):
another wrinkle to it. The in season changes with the
red shirt rules and how many games you can play
and what the promises are, and it's I think at
the end of the day, both sides are going to
kind of come out, you know, a little little egg
on their face here. I think I could definitely see
some improprieties on both sides, But at the end of
the day, Doug Unov's got a game this week and
(21:28):
they're in the race to win the Mountain West. Then
go to the college Wall playoff, and I don't see
a huge drop off between Sluka and the backup who's
another FCS transfer Hodjsma league Williams came in from Campbell,
has a ton of experience, played five years with Campbell,
forty one career starts, a little bit more accurate, a
little bit more mobile. Sluka was brought in to be
(21:49):
the starter from Holy Cross in the off season, but
these two kind of battled it out for the starting job.
So I you know, you saw this number move. It
was four and a half, and then it got down
about to pick them. You saw some U and ob
money come in. I just gave out two and a
half on on our weekly video we do for the show,
and I could see the rebels kind of rallying here.
Barry Odhain's a great coach. I did hear it was
a positive reaction to the news in the locker room
(22:12):
this week. So I would not be surprised if we're
kind of getting a discount on UNLV to win this
game at home on against Fresno.
Speaker 1 (22:19):
HM, and so ends the most just the time of
most discussion of you UNLV football.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
Ever, never know they might be in the playoff this year.
Speaker 1 (22:30):
Doug, never know, they're not. I do know they're not
gonna be the plan, probably not. But they have a chance,
have a chance. They do, I guess have a chance.
That's That's a fair sort of way of of looking
at It's Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
Jared Smith is, of course, our Fox Sports Radio lead
betting analyst. Let's get to a couple of other things
(22:51):
from from this upcoming weekend. Bama Georgia, right the numbers.
If people aren't paying attention, that's fine, We'll help you out.
We'll prep you for what is, without question, the big
game of the weekend in the SEC, the big game
of the weekend in all of college football. The Tide
are at home and they're taking on the Dogs. Of course,
(23:15):
have won two of the last three national championships, and
Bama is a one point dog at home. It's what
I'm looking at. Should be some rain in the forecast.
Forty nine is the over under. What do you got?
Speaker 2 (23:26):
Yeah? I think as this gets closer to a pick them,
I'm a little bit more intrigued with Georgia if they do.
If Bama does close, the home dog it'll be the
first time since O seven, one hundred and thirteen straight
home games favored for Alabama. That's the longest streak in
the FBS over the last three decades. But Georgia listened.
I mean, in the last fifty one games, they can't
beat Bama or forty eight zer against everyone else, one
(23:48):
and two against Bama. So it's kind of this, do
you take the points at home? It's really not any
significant points at this point. I think Georgia's offense is
in a good bounce back spot. You look at and
McConkie being Day one starters in the NFL and you think,
all right, maybe this Georgia offense is going to take
a step back. I don't think as highly as Mike
(24:08):
Bobo as I do Todd Monkin, and I think there's
a downgrade there too. But typically in this Kirby Smart era,
after bad games, and they've had a few. They laid
an egg at Auburn last year, they didn't play well
at Missouri, didn't play well at Kentucky in twenty two.
Usually they rebound. And I think what I'm noticing with
with Bama, especially defensively, they have not faced the good
(24:30):
offense all year. Western Kentucky is not the same offense
they were. Couldn't even get to ten points offensive points
at home against Toledo last week. Usf quarterback Byron Brown,
one of the more inaccurate quarterbacks in the country. This year,
Wisconsin's offense has completely lost their identity. I don't know
if Phil Longo is going to make it through the year.
So you can make the case that this Bama defense
(24:50):
just has not seen the level of athletes, the level
of quarterback play that they're going to see on Saturday
from Carson Beck.
Speaker 1 (24:56):
Now.
Speaker 2 (24:56):
Beck did look very uncomfortable in the pocket against Kentucky.
Run game will be huge here. With Etn and Fraser
both averaging about six per carry, the skill guys get
a little healthier out of the buy the Miami transfer
Colby Young dealing with a hamstring injury. Since Camp Dominic Love,
the Mazoo transfer, has been their most consistent player. I
think after that egg against Kentucky, you give Kirby a bye.
(25:16):
I think I trust their offense to bounce back a
little bit more than what I've seen from Bama's defense
so far. On the other side, Jalen Milroe is a
game break like he is the game wrecker if Bama's
going to win this game. The path is explosive plays
and he's one of the best deep throwers in the country.
The problem is the offensive line hasn't protected Proctor. Tackle
hasn't graded out well Booker, the left guard's been very disappointing.
(25:36):
They're having issues with the snap. Like their center came
from Washington, the board brought him over. He's like two
hundred and eighty pounds. Can he hold up in the
SEC against Georgia having snap issues in what's going to
be a frienzed environment. So I think those are kind
of the game, the game within the game.
Speaker 1 (25:51):
There.
Speaker 2 (25:51):
Can Georgia get their ground game going and really churn
out some yards against Bama's defense, And can Jalen Milro
hit the explosive play and just equalize every every momentum
swing in this game? I think the I think the
spreads right, I think it's a close game. I think
I lean Bam at home, but man had to pick them.
It's tough not to take Georgia.
Speaker 1 (26:09):
Okay, it's Cherry Smith. He's joining us in the Doug
Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio or minder. You
can download the podcast as soon as as soon as
we're done here and you can hear all of these picks.
You're like, man, I missed a pick. Don't worry like
our friend of yours missed to pick Virginia Tech Miami.
We discussed this one. What do you think?
Speaker 2 (26:28):
Yeah, I think with Virginia Tech, I'm really concerned about
their offense and what we've seen from Miami so far
this year. I mean, they've been arguably the best offense
in the country fifty plus points in three straight games.
They haven't done that since O one when they when
they won it. All Tech needs to wake up. They've
already lost twice at home to a favorite this year,
Evan and Rutgers. I think the Miami offense obviously has
(26:51):
an edged. The question is can is Virginia Tech defense
stop the run and just you know, make it a
stalemate in the trenches. Because the vibe of the programs
right now are going in absolutely opposite directions. Miami's been
upgraded throughout the start of the year by all the pros,
Virginia Tech's been downgraded. And even though Virginia Tech did
have some hype coming into the year, but the offense
just hasn't lived up the expectations. Tyler Bowen has not
(27:11):
done a good job game planning. They were down seventeen
at Vandy, down fourteen in the first quarter to Rutgers,
only up three against Marshall in the first half, and
had a four point lead against Old Dominion against the
backup quarterback. Like, you can't be taking seriously if those
are the results against that level of competition. The only
it kind of reminds me a little bit of a
poor man's drones, kind of reminds me of a poor
man's mill Row. Like I think he has the explosive
(27:33):
ability rock and arm, not as consistent, not as mobile,
but still very mobile. And that's that's the path is.
You know, Miami just kind of has a couple of
mistakes here or there, and Virginia Tech hits a couple
of those explosive plays and takes a lead, and you
force Miami to play from a negative game script. And
Mario crystal Ball, who has been very good this year,
(27:54):
surprisingly in his game planning, you know, I do expect
a hiccup at some point from him. So the numbers
getting out of control, Miami should win the game. But
I could see a path for Virginia Tech if they
can hit a couple of these explosives with drones to
cover the number. Hm.
Speaker 1 (28:08):
Okay, Illinois, Penn State. Illinois an eighteen point dog at
Penn State. The totals forty eight.
Speaker 2 (28:13):
Yeah, and I wanted to get involved with Penn State here,
but again, the early market just really steamed the Ninny
Lions up. The number is kind of telling you that
Penn State's gonna win this game, right. Illinois undefeated and
roundefeated of the first nine in like fifteen years, but
in their prior thirty four games against ranked opponents are
(28:33):
two and thirty two. Granted they're two and oh this year,
but oh and thirty two with prior, so again, big
step up in class. I think Luke Altmeyer, we talked
about him last week in the game against Nebraska. I've
seen a ton of improvement there. I like the receiver group.
Bryant's flash, He's got six touchdowns, Bryan the other Bryant
Soakary Bryant, the UTSA transfer has also been very consistent.
(28:56):
The Penn State defense. As you know, I'm a Penn
State along try to look at them as objectively as possible.
I don't think their defense is as good as last year.
I think the on paper they seem as good, but
Abdul Carter's going through a position switch. He hasn't lived
up to the expectations with his hand in the dirt.
Dennis Sutton's kind of been the guy in the middle,
and they've been really good, you know, stopping the Ron
(29:18):
Durant on the interiors play well, they got the Georgia
transfer and the secondary has been good. But Bowling Green,
who's a very experienced team, was very simple. It was
play action rpo, tight ends over the middle like Luke
Altmeyer can kind of replicate that, and Bowling Green really
stayed in that game. So you're seeing again this number
now get close to twenty. I just I can't see
(29:39):
a reason to backpen State at that number. I think
when you see these these favorites get bet up considerably
throughout the week, you're just waiting for the bypoint on
the underdog, and I think twenty is kind of where
I would be for Illinois in this game.
Speaker 1 (29:54):
Doug Gottlib show here on Fox Sports Radio Colorado travels
to Florida in Orlando. What do you think?
Speaker 2 (30:03):
Yeah, really good game here. So can you seef get
the pressure on Shador Sanders like Baylor did with seven
sacks the I mean the spot like the Spot's screens,
you seef, you get the hail Mary, the comeback win.
UCF's off a bye. You've seen them get bet up
in the market considerably this week, and it just again,
(30:23):
once you get over that two touchdown threshold, it just
it feels really tough to back a favorite. But I
do like the spot for UCF. They're good at stopping
the run. They haven't gotten a lot of sacks this year. Again,
that that's the question because that's been the issue for
Colorado's offense this year. Campradeck Shador Sanders, he's holding onto
the ball way too long. It's they get sixteen sacks
already this year. There's still a top five passing offense.
(30:44):
He's still got a seventy percent completion rate. You've got
the I would say the best player in the country,
Travis Hunter, and the number two and three guys Horn
and Western. I would it might be number one receivers
on a lot of teams. So it's just this very
unbalanced team that's just so explosive on the outside but
so bad in middle and in the trenches, and that's
where a good team like UCF, which does have dudes,
(31:04):
can kind of bottle things up. Again. The one issue
for UCF's defense has been in their secondary their experience,
but they're not talented Mac McWilliams. Their best corner is
a UAB transfer and then Brandon Adams on the other
side got lit up by Sam Houston State a couple
weeks ago. So the back door is just it seems
like you watched the NFL game last night, Doug, like
these favorites get out the big leads and then they
(31:27):
just they just throttle down and you have to lay
more than a touchdown with this with this UCF team
that again can get beat explosively. So I think you
just wait and you hope that the favorites get bet up.
It's at fourteen right now. If it gets higher than that,
I think that's where UCF money or excuse me, Colorado
money will start to come into the market.
Speaker 1 (31:45):
Did you see the Raiders ruled Max Crosby out and
DeVante out as well.
Speaker 2 (31:50):
Business decisions, right.
Speaker 1 (31:52):
Yeah, any reason to not take the Browns, You've got to,
I mean, the number at this point it flip.
Speaker 2 (32:00):
I saw it at one on one side, so it
was Vegas.
Speaker 1 (32:03):
I got one and a half right now, Brown's one
and a half road favorite.
Speaker 2 (32:06):
And that's again if you think about just the probability there, Like,
I know, you're like, oh, that's two points. That's a
lot of movement, but the game can't land zero. So
you take that point out one to one on the
other side, it's like a fifty one to forty nine
percent win probability shift. It's not a huge move, but
I would say that those two players maybe, you know,
(32:30):
denotes a little bit more. Usually the quarterbacks the only
player that really impacts the points spread more than a point.
But in this case, maybe it's kind of a canary
in the coal mine. You're like, wow, Crosby and Adams
are you know, not willing to play through whatever they have.
Maybe it's kind of a shift inside the locker room
and how things are going, you know, internally, And I
(32:51):
think that's where you would get worried if you think
you're getting a discount on Vegas.
Speaker 1 (32:56):

Speaker 1 (33:25):
Doug Gottlieb Show Fox Sports Radio. Doug Gotleep Show is
broadcast live from the tyrack dot com studios. Mark Domen
is going to join us momentarily, of course. Former gentle
manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Shout out to everybody
in Tampa all the rain down there in Florida with
the hurricane. You guys stay safe and hopefully everything dries
out and life will be back as normal in a
(33:46):
couple of days. It's just a hope, hope to people
in Tampa and parts of South Florida in the Panhandle
as well. This is Steve Young talking to Brett Brandon
AYUK during his radio hit in San Francisco yesterday.
Speaker 8 (34:00):
Brandon needs to look at it in the eye, like
you know, I'm sure there's things maybe the plays haven't
been called for him as much. Maybe there's some things,
odd things that happened on certain downs where he wasn't
the primary and when they thought he would be. Maybe
there's just some you know, But in the end, the
full measure of what's happened, Brandon needs to own it.
Like I've come back, I miss I missed the camp,
and now I'm not. That's not happening, So I have
(34:21):
to take that on myself. There's no blame other than yourself.
Own it to me. I'll go fix this.
Speaker 1 (34:33):
I think it's one of those things where we as
fans do a terrible job of holding guys accountable for
what they're doing. Missing camp. You know, this is nothing
different than you don't study the first couple of weeks,
then you have your first your first quit first test,
(34:55):
and you don't do well. You're like, man, they didn't
really teach the matuial. It's like, okay, but you didn't
get the syllabus until a week in the class, you
didn't buy the book until two weeks in the classic
what'd you expect to have happened? So I agree with
Steve Young, but we've just reached this place to where
athletes aren't held nearly as accountable as they should be.
(35:17):
And maybe there was a time in the pass where
they were held too accountable, but in this case they
are not. All Right, stuck Gottlieb show here on Fox
Sports Radio. All right, Mark Dominical, join us momentarily. I
think this weekend is several fascinating things this weekend. Yeah,
(35:39):
Bama Georgia this weekend. You can't you can't try and
sell me on other games coming anywhere near that level
of overall talent. And then the pro side, I think
this Vikings Packers game is fantastic, fantastic. I am going
to go which it's this is a hard one now,
(36:00):
right because now now he's like, you're in you go
to the Packers games, But any of us who watch
sports cover sports for a living, were like, man, you
go to a game, especially in that early window, and
you miss all the other games. Then you got to
go back and watch all those other games. I guess
maybe I'm asking Buyer this one because Biro will be working,
so Byer gets the benefit of watching all these games.
(36:22):
I just I looked at this weekend's games New Orleans
Atlanta sort of interesting rams because their comeback win against
the Bears, Like I do want to see if Kayleb
Williams gets any better, Like Jacksonville they go to zero
to four. Like you got to think some changes will
be made, But there's just not a lot in that
early window, is there. You know, Philly, Tampa, you.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
Know Dallas playing on Thursdays, you know, takes up a
lot of air. Bill's Ravens is such a good game
on Sunday night. That's another one. So maybe there isn't
as much headlining. But Vikings Packers is really good. The
one thing that you should notice, Doug, and I'm curious
because you did go to the Colts Gamer on Monday
report back on the fans.
Speaker 1 (37:03):
Because this is a Milwaukee game.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
It's a Milwaukee game, a gold Package game. So if
they're you know, tell us if there's any difference from
what you from what you heard, not it'll be different
because it's the Vikings by Vikings. Yeah, that's a that's
a really good it's a really good game to be at,
but it is.
Speaker 1 (37:19):
Also really hard. It's a very hard, very difficult one
for me because you guys know my fandom towards Sam Donald,
plus I actually know him a little bit like him
a great deal. So it's like the Vikings are the
like second rated arch enemy of the Packers and yet
like their quarterback is. I think this is a great
feel good story. Plus personally I know him. He's an
awesome dude. Mark Dominic joins us here on the Doug
(37:39):
Gotlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. You know, I was
actually having a conversation Mark earlier today. It is kind
of interesting. Remember when Brian Billick was there and they
lost the NFC Championship game. Randall Cunningham had a rebirth
in Minnesota. Warren Moon had a rebirth in Minnesota. Rich
Gannon was drafted as a defensive He first made it
(38:01):
kind of in Minnesota. Who else am I thinking there's
some of oh Kirk cousins right, kind of resurgence in Minnesota?
What farv had a rebirth to his career in Minnesota.
What is it about the Vikings, Dave? They I mean,
Dante Culpepper was good for a couple of years. They
haven't necessarily nailed it in the draft, but in the
(38:23):
in the bounce back careers they've done quite well. Yeah.
Speaker 9 (38:27):
I think there's a secret in there. Doug and I
think the secret is the same things that they've stolen
down in New Orleans, and that is, for the most part,
instead of drafting the young rookie and saying, let's let's
develop their young rookie. You've seen the Saints over the
last twenty twenty one. I know Drew Brees is part
of it, but the cars that also too sat so
he's a high pick on a quarterback. They go out
and say, hey, look, let's go find a veteran and
(38:50):
have him come in here and play. And that way
we don't have to go through the eggs and pains
and we get to see what he convenient foam. It
seems to be working for Mickey Loomis, as he's the
longest tender DM in the league by twenty plus years
as a GM. I think the Vikings that found the
same kind of a pot of gold where they're like,
why are even though they just drafted the young quarterback.
I think there is something to be said about, you know,
instead of trying to you know, swing and miss or
(39:11):
swinging hit to go grab the guy that's still got
some talent and go put him in the roster. So
you know, it's not the water there's ten thousand lakes,
but it's not the water. I think it's it's more
of a I think this one is the fit. And
I think to your point, Sam Darnold's a hard working dude,
but he's also in the same offense for two years
row and that has obviously paid off dividends.
Speaker 1 (39:29):
No question, no question. I don't think people understand when
you have a different offense every year and one that
doesn't fit your skill set. This one does too, because
you know, you got to get out on the perimeter
on on this you know, play action fakes and on
those boots, and that's that fits right into his skill set.
Speaker 2 (39:45):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (39:46):
And he seems to be really countable. Plus they have
talented players, and I think they have talent around him,
not just a coach who is a quarterback. But I mean,
you got as too good of wide receivers as as
you're going to find. All right, let's get to last night.
I had a takeaway that was maybe different than yours.
I don't know. It's we are holding the Cowboys to
(40:07):
an expectation in the past couple of years where look,
this team was built I think initially with the intent
of keeping Dak Prescott on his current contract, and that
current contract had the biggest cap number in the history
of the league, and so that hurt their ability to
support it with a ton of talent. I just don't
think they're that good. Like it doesn't mean they're bad,
but they're not twelve or thirteen wins good like they
(40:29):
were the past couple of years.
Speaker 9 (40:31):
Well, I think the big thing that they struggled with
is kind of what you talked about. You know, they
talked about being all in and they had to make
a lot of business decisions of people to keep and
people like the other people to hold on to and
be able to really add anybody outside of the organization
in this because they were in the middle of all
this contract trouble with the different guys, they're still not
completely through the woods. Even though you know Michael Parson's
(40:53):
obgs to get him down so a little bit now
it sounds like that's another player that they're going to
have to figure out how we're going to get this
guy done. It's the highest right to pay in the
league as well, So it's it's a tough situation that
they're in. There's no doubt about it. I I really
thought that they would walk away with this game. I
really thought, you know, you know, I've been seven Cowboys
apologists for probably way too long now, but I think
(41:14):
I thought that this is a game that you know,
Dallas went by. I thought it could have actually be
double digits, and you know, they have a chance to
be up by at least eight. They just could never
close the deal. Uh, it's a team that's underperforming. I
don't think it's the talent so much is I just
feel like, uh, you know, it's been obviously up and
down with Mike Zimmer and the defense. And Mike's been
around for a long time, knows what he's doing. But
they keep going with different players at different spots, you know,
(41:37):
whether it's you know, a guy like the Moon Clark
played last ye at linebacker. This year it's you know,
it's Kneeland, which is fine, he's you know, or overshown.
There's different guys, but it feels like they're still trying
to figure out what this roster is defensively.
Speaker 1 (41:49):
Uh, and how, I'm sorry you're up Mark. How what
what's the main difference from Zimmer and what they were
doing previously.
Speaker 9 (42:00):
Well, I think it's I don't know, if it's they're
going to play a little more zone sometimes in this defense.
But I think the bigger thing is having known both
guys and then you know, I'm a Zimmer fan. I
actually interviewed Zimmer for a head coaching job when I
had a head coaching job available. But I also tried
to hire van Quinn multiple times. These are two completely
different type of coaches, right, and I think they're missing
(42:21):
the dan Quinn personality.
Speaker 1 (42:22):
Agreed, Agreed, We said that. I mean, we have the
tape somewhere with me saying I don't think people understand
what they're losing in a dan Quinn. I mean you're
losing and he's he was the architect of a defense.
And now you have a different architect of a defense,
and the build specs and the style is going to
be very, very very different. Let's let's bounce around the
(42:44):
league a little bit. How do you explain the Rams'
ability to get a win last week?
Speaker 9 (42:50):
Well, I think they just took advantage of a team
that probably took them for advantage, Like they probably looked
at the Rams and go if they weren't a good spot.
Here were the forty nine ers. Obviously, you know they
were one and one going into it. It was just
a you know, for the four years to jump out
with that kind of a lead and then to just
let it trickle away is very I think they got comfortable,
(43:11):
and I think that they were sitting there going, Okay,
we've got another wut here. We're gonna be a good shape.
And obviously when they're up twenty one to seven, things
really started to change for him. It was it was
a shock. I watched the game. Rock Purty played really
well throughout the entire game, so it was like it
wasn't where he was struggling, and they were able to
run the ball fairly effectively. So this was just to me,
like the defense just had a lapse and let some
(43:32):
plays just develop and then that's where you know, the
Rams just took advantage. It wasn't like the Rams controlled
the block. I mean, this was just you know, great
opportunities and miss field was a big part of it
for the forty nine ers as well. That kind of
came back to haunting, But I think it was just
a team that kind of felt like they were going
to win and put it on cruise control and ended
up giving up big plays down the stretch for quick scores?
Speaker 1 (43:51):
Are you a buyer long term? And in my long
term I mean this season into Justin Fields with the Steelers, I.
Speaker 9 (44:00):
Still feel like as good as he's played and better
than I thought he was, it's got to give him credit.
He's absolutely you know, putting him at three and zero
at this point in chances for going to be at
four to oh possibly with the Colts. I still feel
like Russell Wilson is going to find a way to
get back on the football field. You know. But you
know what Justin Fields has been able to do, It's
hard to kind of battle it. It's it's one of
those things where you sit there saying, ok, hey he's
(44:21):
you know, it makes me more look at the Bears,
it makes me more look at you know, what's going
on with you know, Caleb Williams. And maybe everyone's overrated
that offensive line and maybe that's really the truth. And
that's where you know, Justin Fields is like, hey, you
played by better offensive line. I got a better chance
of being in the pocket and completing seventy what is
seventy three percent of his passes. It's not even the
(44:42):
same stratosphere as what he was doing in Chicago. So
you know, it's he may not have the throwing touchdowns,
but he's making good decisions with only one turnover in
the first you know, three games.
Speaker 1 (44:52):
Yeah, yeah, I mean the team hasn't.
Speaker 9 (44:55):
The Pittsburgh Steelers are playing fundamentally. The defense is as
we know, I think, elite, but in terms of turn like,
they haven't had a fumble this year. Like, that's how
good they have played this year. They have played exceptionally
smart football. And that's why they're giving up what nine
points the game and not having to score more than
twenty to win games.
Speaker 1 (45:14):
Yeah, well they're shorten they're shortening the game too. You know.
That's where he has he has some layup throws and
if not, he runs it and they play very conservatively
and it shortens the game. And that's he played the
strength of your defense and they don't have to be
on the field as long as they're a few possessions, right, exactly, right, yep,
complimentary football, Okay, Bills Sunday Night against the Ravens. Ravens
(45:36):
have been rather unimpressive much of the year, although they
did just go beat the Cowboys on the road. They're
ones that took the foot off the Gas against the Raiders.
Should have won that game. What are your thoughts on
Bills who They're in the middle of a stretch of
four road games in five games as they go to Tech,
they go to the Texans next, the Jets, home of
the Titans, and the Seahawks. What are your thoughts on
(45:57):
Bill's Ravens.
Speaker 9 (45:58):
Yeah, I kind of feel still. I mean, Sakiri is
obviously stepped up quickly for the Buffalo Bills, the player
that was kind of on the roster and stepping up
a little bit last year. But when you I like
the Bills, you know, when you're averaging almost what thirty
five forty points a game in that range. But the
thing that's different about the Bills is this is this
is the Allen that we all know. This is the
(46:19):
guy that we saw a couple of years ago that's
back in business right now. But it's also Cooks team.
Cook has taking a big role into obviously running the ball,
but to be able to catch the ball as well.
He is absolutely taking pressure off of Josh Allen to
be able to make it so much easier for him
to feel comfortable. And when he's completing, you know, at
a record pace, of almost seventy five percent of his passes.
And again another guy that's not turning the ball over.
(46:41):
This Buffalo offense is humming and the defense is a
very talented defense too. I mean, I think they're plus
nine in terms of sacks versus sacks allowed. They're plus nine,
and they're getting after the quarterback and they're not giving
up the hits. And so this is a total complete
team right now. Yes, it takes a Baltimore team. It's
very much dangerous and very scary to play just because
you know that they could come downhill on you pretty
(47:03):
quick and then have a good game. But I still
think Buffalo is playing exceptionally well and I lean towards
the Buffalo Bills for sure.
Speaker 1 (47:11):
Stug Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Trader. That's the
voice of Mark Dominic, who, of course spent twenty years
or over twenty years in the front office is Nation
Football League. Most famously, he was the general manager of
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Speaking of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
they and the Saints were like feel good stories and
then they get stumped at home by the Broncos. What explain, Yeah, it.
Speaker 9 (47:37):
Was a hard game to understand in terms of what
happened there. I mean, this is a team that obviously
you looked at that game coming into it saying how
they got to feel really good about their chances of
winning it and then suddenly, boom, they run into a
buzz all the Broncos. And you know, Sean Paygne has
obviously been the head coach of the Saints for a
long time. He knows that Buccaneers team pretty good. He's
been battling them for years and years and years. I
(47:57):
know it's not all the same players, but it's still
that same you know, feel of what this team's about
and knowing that you're going to play in that heat
and Raymond James and what that means. Uh, and this one,
you know, I think it came down to that, really
they struggled to establish themselves in terms of the run,
and that was a big part of it. But I
think the other part was is that, you know, Tampa
(48:18):
just didn't tackle well in that game. They they they
they didn't finish it and convert drive. And I think
that's the other thing. That they really struggled on the
third down and they were oh too on fourth down.
And I think that's where the Bucks, you know, where
they went for it or were they trying to get
a third down. They just were bad at that point
in the game and that's what really cost them. That's
why the points weren't there for them, because they just
couldn't get drives going or keep the drives alive, and
(48:39):
the you know, the Broncos took advantage of that.
Speaker 4 (48:42):
Hmm.
Speaker 1 (48:44):
Let's get back to Kaylea Williams. I know you talked
about the line, but we see the number two pick
absolutely light up Monday Night football and that was that
was the guy where you said, I clear if I'm wrong,
but you like Jayden dani Is better right before the draft.
Speaker 9 (49:02):
I did.
Speaker 1 (49:03):
Okay, obviously there's some confirmation bias, but how concerned should
the Bears be?
Speaker 9 (49:09):
Well, I mean, I think you've got to be somewhat
concerned just because you know, it's not the same with
what okay, going into taking Caleb aside, what will Levis
has done in Nashville is more concerned to what Caleb
Williams is doing in Buffalo in Chicago. Excuse me, And
I know Levis is in year two, but you know,
when you see a guy pressing and forcing and making
critical errors. That's one thing Caleb to me just doesn't
(49:30):
look comfortable. Caleb to me, again, this is what I
talked about even with you, Doug before the draft. I
think he thought this was going to be easy, and
it's super hard to play this game. And that's why
you see thirteen sacks, because you know he's like, this
is harder than I thought this is. Things are happening
faster than I thought they would. And so that I
think is part of the growing process, hopefully for Caleb,
and that hopefully works through it. That arm talent and
(49:52):
the ability still is there. I'm not sitting there going, hey,
it's time to close the book and Caleb Williams is
now a bust. It doesn't look like I said towards
Bryce Young or anything like that which was going on
in Carolina. But I think you've got to see over
the next two to three weeks that you've got to
start to see Caleb. The sacks need to come down.
You've got to, you know, get rid of the ball quicker.
Trust what he's got to and if you've got to
dump one off for a bad completion, it is what
(50:14):
it is. But his accuracy can he also has been struggling.
So those two things are just staring in the face, going,
you know, this is what you were concerned about. But again,
I think he just needs a taste of some success.
And you know, the week one was nice, but that
was hand delivered on the platter. You know, this last
loss was pretty bad one to the Colts. I think
it's a long season for the Bears, but I'm not
(50:35):
writing a book on Caleb blames yet. I need he
needs at least a half the season to watch and
see how he develops and see how he can grow
early in his career like this.
Speaker 1 (50:43):
Mark, you're the best man. Have a great weekend, are
you guys? You guys safe. I don't know where you're
calling us from, but I know there's the hurricane coming
through you guys, Yeah you have.
Speaker 9 (50:52):
We're in Nashville, Tennessee. It has rained for It's nothing
like it was down in Florida, but it has rained
twenty four hours. We've got flash flooding everywhere, but it's
not anything as bad as what we seem to happen
to Florida or what's going on probably in Atlanta or
Georgia area. So it's rough. It's about as bad as
what it probably feels like a giant right now watching
sae Quon Barkley play for the Eagles.
Speaker 1 (51:13):
It's about the US by the way, real quick, I
know being in Nashville. Can you fix what Will Levis?
His problem is where he just I mean just a
one or two moronic throws the game. Can you fix that?
Is that fixable?
Speaker 9 (51:27):
My gut is it's not. My gut is that is
one of the things that made people kind of pass
on Will Levis and why he filled it the second round.
My gut is that, you know, he's got the from
the neck down. He's an absolute NFL quarterback from the
neck up. You know, there's there's concerns about, you know
it misfiring, and I feel like that what we've seen
(51:47):
and from the coaches to what their reactions are. I
don't think this just happens in games.
Speaker 6 (51:51):
I have done.
Speaker 9 (51:51):
This happens in practice as well.
Speaker 1 (51:53):
Mark Dominic, former gentle manager in tamp Bay. Buccaneer's spent
over twenty years in front officers scouting as well. He
knows it all and he shares it all with it
right here on Fox Sports Tradio. Mark have a great weekend,
stay dry.
Speaker 9 (52:04):
Enjoy the game. Buddy, take care
