Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottli Show. Here's in
the bonus with Doug Gottli.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
What a Doug Gotlib Show. In the bonus on Fox
Sports Radio. I heeartradio app Welcome, welcome, welcome in, do dude.
But so Jay stew As you asked me before we
started putting this podcast together, what is different? This is
(00:31):
the uh Man I do wish one of you guys
was Jewish you could understand, you know, it's the Monistanahililah,
hase Mi coole Holly, Like, what how is this night
different than any other night? All right, that's pass Over
prayer by the way. Anyway, do you know how this
night is different than any other night?
Speaker 3 (00:51):
I'm anxiously awaiting the answer.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Answer is, uh, we just have an exhibition game at
the Crest Center. But it's the first game night in which,
in front of other people I will coach a college
basketball program. I don't know bad news. I think I
have the best shooter, one of the best shooters in
(01:14):
the country. He's the best shooter in the league. And
he rolled his ankle in our shoot around earlier today,
so probably not going to play. And we're playing St.
Norbert's St. Norberts is a Division III program here in
green Bay. So they're int peer to peer is and
to peers. Just what you think of the peer it's
there's all the lock system on the Fox River is
(01:34):
right there anyway, beautiful campus into peer and uh yeah,
so they're really good. They win twenty one games or
more per year. Their coach played at Green Bay and
they play very very slow and methodical. But they're good.
Last year they nearly beat green Bay like two point win.
Remember this the green Bay team that went on to
(01:55):
win eighteen games, so after winning four of the year before.
So yeah, pretty big challenge and our best shooter is
probably out of that good time.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
So what what happens uh tonight? Is it? I mean
just the formalities and stuff. Are you basically just doing
a look live like everything that happens in a regular
season game is going to happen tonight to the introductions
and everything else. Yes, yes, awesome.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Yes, it just live run not a driver. It does
not count on your record.
Speaker 4 (02:26):
Right.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Record, even without your best shooter. Doug, do you think
that you don't think you're going to lose to a
Division III team?
Speaker 2 (02:34):
I would like to think we're not but again, I
I have a you know, I have an immense amount
of respect for what they do and how they do it.
They're an older team, they're experienced team, the best players
to coach his son. It's a style. It's really hard.
It's it's like a it's almost like single wing football,
you know, where if you get behind, they just there's
not they just sap the clock out.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
So is there anything that like, is there anything that
could happen tonight where you will say afterwards, Man, I
didn't I didn't expect that, or I wasn't I was
totally prepared for that moment in time or whatever.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
I don't think so, but I don't know. Yeah, but
I let you on tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
Is that okay?
Speaker 2 (03:18):
That that would be the thing. So gonna have to
take it with the starting lineup. I'm going to start
one of my other returners who has earned it, and
I'll be interested. You know, styles make the fight. We
play the polar opposite style of how they play. We
(03:38):
want to spread you out, we want to play fast,
We want to shoot ton of threes. They want to
shoot threes, but they want to play release. So there's
over four hundred and fifty division three teams, and they're
in the bottom hundred, so four hundred and plus, like
four hundred and tenth in pace of play in Division
three basketball. So and yet they win games because they
play their way, and then they keep play their way.
(03:59):
So the the goal is to speed them up on
sub level and not have to guard them as much
in the half court, and then to play from ahead
and make them play catch up. Can we it's gonna
it's gonna be hard.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Can we talk about what's gonna happen ten days from now,
because I don't think we haven't talked about on the podcast.
So ten days from now, Doug is going to be
playing his alma mater.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
I'm not gonna play one minute.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
Well coaching against his alma mater and Stillwater, Oklahoma against
Oklahoma State. Premiere Radio and Fox Sports Radio have been
nice enough to approve a trip by the show to
Stillwater for that for that game, We're gonna do a
show at a sports bar and then.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
It's it's uh, it's a bar in restaurant. Eskimo Joe's,
Eskimo Joe's, Eskimo Joe's jump still want to jump in
juke chiint.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
So, how are you feeling about that one that night,
ten ten days out.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
I'm fine. I mean, I I know what our weakness
is and it's one of their strengths, you know, but
it's kind of a no loser for me, and like
I don't want to get embarrassed. But I mean, if
we're honest, did they have their payroll on nil is
probably fifteen to twenty x of what ours is, right,
So we'll what's god there and play, you know, and
(05:21):
be fun really fun?
Speaker 3 (05:23):
Are there? Are there a lot of will will there be?
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Will there be emotions?
Speaker 4 (05:26):
Like?
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Yeah, of course they'll be emotions, right, I mean that's
a place where I mean a place I love, place
I played place I I wanted to be the head
coach of. But yeah, I mean like it's that's home
to me, So it'll be. But not all the emotions
are bad. I mean, just because when people say emotions,
it means you can't handle it. Like I mean, I'm
(05:47):
that's why you do it. If you're not feeling emotions,
you're not doing something right.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
But I don't know if all of our listeners know this,
But you consulted for that program a year ago for
a different coach. Yes, are there a lot of repeat
players coming back or is this kind of an Oklahoma
State team.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
I think they have four or five. And then I
have one of the Oklahoma State players as though he's
not healthy as of yet, so I don't know if
he'll play in that one. And then I have one
that was signed to go there that got out of
his letter after the coaching change. So yeah, there's there
they'll be. And then everybody who's you know, the support staff,
from Larry Reeves, who's the announcer, you know, to Keaton
(06:23):
Page and Scott Sutton. Scott of course is the son
of my coach, and he was there last year. A
Keaton Page is a great player who I met when
he was in fourth grade. Like all these all these
things are come full circle. My kids will be there
at that game, so that'll be really cool. Yeah, there'll
be some emotions there.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Your kids, me and Dan Byer, so that'll just add
to the emotion. You'll look over at Dan Byer and
you'll tear up.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
I don't know if I'll tear up, but I definitely do.
There'll be some emotions there.
Speaker 1 (06:50):

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Doug Gottlieb Show Here on Fox Sports Radio. He's the
one and only Kelly Ford k Ford Ratings are who
we call on on a weekly basis to look back
and see the changes in the college football landscape and
then look forward and try to have some predictive analysis
on what's to come. You can find his ratings on
his social media handles or go to k Ford Ratings
(07:23):
dot com. Kell let me ask you biggest change from
last week to this week?
Speaker 5 (07:30):
Yeah, biggest change. From a Power Ratings standpoint, Doug, as
Indiana continues to exceed the model's expectations, You're continuing to
phase out pre season, so Indiana continues to climb. They
have been upgraded more than any other team at FBS
since the start of this season. And on the negative side,
Oklahoma and Nebraska are two teams that were downgraded more
(07:52):
than a field goal based on their performances this past week.
From a resume standpoint, I now have Georgia as the
numberumber one resume in the country. Even though the Dogs
have a loss, they are my number one most deserving
team at this time. Texas, who the ap pole had
as the number one team going in the last week,
I had them at number seven in the deserving metrics.
(08:13):
They are now down to number fourteen. Alabama is your
top ranked two loss team at number thirteen for me,
So lots of things changing and it's going to continue
to shake out here these next four or five weeks.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
What's the biggest game this weekend?
Speaker 5 (08:26):
Biggest game this weekend for me is LSU and Texas
A and M. These are two teams that right now
in my most deserving ranking are in the top ten.
From a power rating standpoint, both of these teams are
very very good. I've got them in the top fifteen.
This to me is a huge game in the SEC
and in the national landscape. So for me, I'm looking
at College Station. I think that's going to be a
(08:47):
really good game. And as I go to my projection
for that game really quickly, here I have got excuse me,
I've got LSU as the favorite in this one. Excuse me,
A and M the favorite in this one with a
fifty six percent win expectancy. I do think that both
offenses should have the advantage here. I have the LSU
offense number two in the country. The A and M
(09:09):
offense is number twenty two, so both these offenses should
be able to score points. The worst unit in this
game for me is the LSU defense number thirty six,
which that's pretty good given recent LSU defensive standards, not
what they're used to in bat and rue from a
last twenty years or so. But that's the worst unit here.
It's at Kyle Field. I think that makes the difference.
And I expect A and M to keep it rolling
(09:31):
here this week.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
All right, to A and M keeping it rolling a
team that started out with that early loss. Anyone to
ask you about one sneaky game? Tonight Syracuse takes on
Pittsburgh Q's for five and a half point dogs on
the road. At pitt They do have Kyle McCord, they
have one futrid loss to Stanford, and pitt of course
is ranked nineteen in the country. But I don't think
(09:52):
anybody knows exactly how good their squad is. What does
the computer say about Syracuse Pittsburgh?
Speaker 5 (09:58):
Yeah, and before I answered, I just want to get
I think Pitt's being under ranked by the committee, not underrated,
under ranked or excuse me by the eight people. I
have Pittsburgh's resume right now as the six and zero
Panthers as number nine in the country, So that's where
I would have them ranked, certainly, not from a ratings standpoint.
Pit to me is power rated number forty, so you know,
the AP's kind of split in a difference there. But
(10:20):
they are undefeated.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
They do.
Speaker 5 (10:21):
They do have an impressive resume to date. My numbers
life PIT. In this game, I've got a sixty seven
percent win expectancy for the Panthers. It is at home,
so that's going to be an advantage for them here.
But I think again, like I talked about with LSUA
and M both offenses are going to have the advantage
in this game. I think the best unit in this
game is that Kyle McCord led Syracuse offense. I have
(10:41):
them number twenty eight, But the worst unit in the
game is this Syracuse defense that I have number seventy six.
So yet this is a big game, certainly in the ACC.
I mean, if you look at my projected ACC standings
right now, neither one of these teams cracked the top
five for what we're projecting at the end of the year. Currently,
one of four, undefeated in conference play in Syracuse only
(11:03):
has the one loss on the year. So yeah, this
is a sneaky good Thursday night game in the ACC.
And they've got the window.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
All of themselves.
Speaker 5 (11:09):
So a lot of eyeballs on this one this week.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
All right, let's let's get to Saturday's games, because there's
a lot of good ones. Notre Dame Navy, Notre Dame Navy,
Naval Academy undefeated, but a twelve and a half point
underdog at home. What's the commuter say about Notre Dame
and Navy.
Speaker 5 (11:29):
Maybe's one of the great stories of the year, Doug.
It's certainly been awesome to see what they and Army
have been doing. I would be very surprised if we're
sitting here next week still talking about an undefeated Navy team. Now,
Notre Dame can subbed their toe. We saw that with
NIU in week two. But my numbers really like Notre Name.
It's a ninety percent win expectancy. We're expecting the Irish
to have the advantage on both sides of the ball,
(11:50):
and it's really this Notre Dame defense that for me
has impressed this year. They're number three in the country
by my numbers, So as a neutral site game here,
I expect Notre name to get it done again ninety
percent chance to win. Navy needs this one, I think,
to stay in the CFP at large conversation. Of course,
they can still lose this game and win the American
(12:11):
Athletic Conference positioning themselves if they are eleven and one
on selection Sunday, because remember that Army Navy game is
after Selection Sunday, so they only play eleven regular season
games and its shipman. If they're able to run the
table outside of this one, they're certainly going to have
a strong case to be made for that G five AQ.
But they need to win this one if they want
any hope for an at large.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
Missouri's taken on Alabama. Bama a big favorite against Missouri,
but Bama, of course two losses on the road. Where
are they in regards to the College Bball playoff?
Speaker 5 (12:42):
Yeah, this is a huge game for both teams. With
regard to the collegeball playoff, I actually still have both
of these teams in this game with or in the
playoff race with still some margin for air. Actually, Doug,
I believe given Alabama's scheduled difficulty that Alabama needs to
go nine and three or better to be in the
at large conversation. That doesn't mean they're going to get
(13:02):
a playoff bid, but I think they need to be
nine and three or better to be in the conversation,
so they can still lose this one and still have
it outside chance if they run the table. Same thing
for Missouri. Missouri schedule is easier than Alabama's, but they
only have one loss right now compared to Alabama's two,
So I think Missouri needs to be ten and two
to be in that conversation at the end of the year.
So both of these teams can afford to drop this game,
(13:24):
but if they do, their margin of air is officially gone.
My numbers really like Alabama and this one eighty eight
percent win expectancy. I will say, though, that Alabama's recent
form has not been great, so the model is probably
still a little too high on the Crimson Tide. If
I'm removing the model and just thinking about it myself,
Kelly Ford, the person not K four ratings the model,
(13:45):
I'd probably have Alabama's win expectancy closer to seventy five
or eighty percent. But the model does like the Crimson Tide.
They are at home in this one. I think it's
going to be a really good game.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
Where is Colorado under rankings as they play at home
against Cincinnati. Of course went healthy after that early lost Nebraska.
They've been very good. Where's Colorado?
Speaker 5 (14:06):
Colorado from a power rating standpoint is up to number
twenty nine. From a resume standpoint, a most deserving standpoint,
I have them number thirty one. Colorado's been really good
this year, I mean much better than than my model
since my model thought they would be. I've got them
number four right now in the projected Big twelve standings
at the end of the year, behind only Iowa State
BYU and Kansas State. So yeah, Colorado, they've certainly you know,
(14:29):
the offense we thought would be pretty good, and they
they performed at the top twenty five level. It was
the defense that the model just needed to see it
before it believed it. And this Colorado defense is significantly
better than they were a year ago. They're up to
number fifty one. I've got a sixty five percent win
expectancy for the Buffs in this game. The Colorado's interesting.
They have five games remaining. My numbers project that each
(14:50):
of those spreads is going to be one possession, and
currently Colorado is a favorite in each of those games.
So all five games left projecting to be one score
in Colorado is a slight favorite. If you're a Colorado fan,
take your heart medicine, because I think it's going to
be a very exciting end of the year with the
game they have coming up on this schedule.
Speaker 2 (15:08):
What would happen if Texas lost to Vanderbilt.
Speaker 5 (15:11):
Texas losing to Vanderbilt is not going to knock them
out of the playoffs. For me, I think ten and
two is good enough for Texas to be in the
at large conversation, but certainly it would damage the resume.
Like I said, I already have them at number fourteen
and the most deserving rankings, so they really haven't been
tested this year outside of Georgia and we know how
that went. So Texas they can afford to lose, but
(15:32):
I would advise them not to. Vanderbilts having a great year.
They're in the top thirty of my most deserving rankings.
But from a power rating standpoint, this team is still
in the mid fifties. I know it's on the road,
but you're expecting the models expecting Texas to get it done.
Ninety four percent win expectancy here for the Longhorns.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
Last thing, Kelly, we talked about these losses. How much
should it? Does it change? You think the reaction to
the wins and the reaction to the losses, the fact
that they don't matter as much now you can lose
so many games and still get in.
Speaker 5 (16:01):
Yeah, it's pros and cons here, Doug. I mean, I
think from a fan standpoint, the loss is still hurt,
the wins are still high. But I think what it
does is, after you know, a day or two, you're
able to sit back and think, Okay, all is not lost.
Yeah we're disappointed with what just happened, or yeah we're
thrilled with that great win we just had, but all
is not lost and there's still things to be gained,
so more teams have a chance to make the playoff.
(16:24):
I think a lot of people think that is a
good thing, but it does diminish the meaning of these losses.
If I'm an Ohio State fan and we just lost
to Oregon by one point on the road in heartbreaking
fashion in the fourteen era, that's devastating because you have
a very uphill battle now to get back into this thing.
In the twelfteen era, you kind of say, man, really
wish we could have won that one. But no harm,
(16:44):
no foul. We're still in great shape to make the
playoff and we liked our Kansas. When we play the
Ducks again in the future.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
Yeah, it's crazy. It's crazy. I watch it and I thought,
I thought of you, I thought of all the sup
As College Fall fans, and I thought of how great
a game it was, how crazy it was, and how
little actually meant it is. But we've all wanted to
playoff and now we have one, and we are not
going back. Kelly, great stuff as always Kford Ratings dot
(17:11):
com or follow him at k Ford Ratings on social
media as well. Kelly, You're the best. Thanks for joining us.
Speaker 5 (17:18):
Thanks, Doug really appreciate it. As always.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (17:30):
Let's get to what the Fox says and now say
every day at this time with the Doug Gottlieb Show.
In the Bonus podcast, we play for your portion of
previous show, Fox Sports Radio, Fox Sports One. We call
it what no no, Huhny. Here's Dan Patrick talking about
the Minnesota Vikings.
Speaker 6 (17:46):
It feels like people on the Vikings bandwagon to sign.
Aside from Vikings fans, they're kind of like nashally are going,
I don't know, it still kind of a wait and
see lost to the Lions. Close game. Now you got
the Rams Rams at home. But then after that, you
see you have Rams, Colts, Jags, Titans. Those are all winnable.
(18:06):
I mean you could be what nine and one, ten
and one after that. I don't know if people still
be all in on the Vikings because we still go
I don't know, like Harrison Smith is their recognizable defensive player.
You got Justin Jefferson, and you got a good coach,
and then you're not quite sure about Sam Donald or
(18:27):
anything else with the Vikings. But they've been a good team,
solid team, and could pick up four wins. They could
be nine and one when this is all said and done.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
I told you guys, I mean, obviously I'm a Sam
Donald fan. You know Sam Donald Day one fanboy and
proudly so obviously it's come to fruition. But like, look,
there's precedence for this before. I also think he's under
selling a little bit. Aaron Jones was ahigh quality running
(19:00):
back with the Green Bay Packers, so it's not like
they're all unknowns. It's just justin Jefferson outstanding Wide receiving Corps,
outstanding coach, and yeah, they're part of it is also
who they're playing against. They're not playing the most difficult
schedule on Earth, you know, And why is that? Well,
last year they had Kirk Cousins and he was killing
(19:21):
it and then he got hurt. So I it's really
interesting that he's talking about how in the NFC do
you really believe in the Vikings? Like Okay, if you
don't believe in the Vikings, like who do you believe in?
Who do you believe in? I'm not a huge buyer
into the Eagles, but talent wise, and the fact that
(19:41):
Jalen Hurts has had them in the Super Bowl, you
have to at least slot them ahead. Right. The Niners
were the team that everybody thought had the most talent
and or really well coached, but they're just too injured.
So I guess the question is, if not the Vikings,
then who I think the Packers are really really good.
Vikings have beatn them. Did happen happen at lambeau Field,
(20:01):
so they'll get him at home. And I understand the doubt.
Most of the doubt is around Sam Darnold, and that's
reasonable because he's had hot starts before, he's had a
hype before, and it's fallen apart before. This does feel
like obviously the best coach team he's played on. It's
a system he knows and he's got super talent around him.
(20:22):
But and look, that was a game. Despite they played
the Detroit Lions, who are everybody you know, it's quickly
becoming everybody's favorite to come out of the NFC. That
was a winnable football game against Detroit Lions, who have
a high powered offense that they didn't stop. But they
slowed down a little bit and the Lions defense is
not great, but they still had a chance to win
the game late. So I'm in on the Vikings on
(20:44):
being a playoff team. Do I think they're a super
Bowl team? Probably not. But again, like if we don't
like them, there's only Detroit and Philadelphia really right now
to kind of hang your hat on as the team
you do like this is Brady Quinn LeVar Arrington talking
about Bill Belichick and draw I was under.
Speaker 7 (21:01):
The impression that Belichick's beef was with Craft, not so
much with Drod Mayo.
Speaker 3 (21:07):
It feels like there's something there though, right I look so.
Speaker 7 (21:12):
One of the things that I remember reading was that
Belichick kind of felt like, I don't know if betrayed
is the right word, probably a little bit too far
of award for this, but that he felt like maybe
Gerrod was maybe kind of going behind his back or
angling behind his back as the the replacement for him,
(21:33):
and he felt uncomfortable and unhappy about that while in
real time he was there and his replacement was already
working behind the scenes and being related to the guy.
Speaker 8 (21:44):
Yeah, bringing that up. Let me throw this out at
you like this one just like is percolating right now.
Was that Mayo throwing shade at Bill Belichick like this
team stinks this year? Is that Geratmeo given himself more runway?
Speaker 2 (22:08):
I just I think that he's calling a team soft,
and it's a very dangerous thing to do because in
order to do that, it has to trigger that those
guys are gonna wake up and react well. And Belichick,
I think is sitting there going like part of it
is these are his guys. Part of it is no
matter what they did, no matter who they played or
(22:30):
how poorly they played, Belichick wasn't critical. I don't think
I could be wrong. Do I think that there's probably
an element of it, which Jonas was talking about, Yeah,
where you think, Hey, is this guy angling from my
job and he gets a job that he kind of
completely goes away from how he did things. Sure, that's
very reasonable. I think that's a good take. But I
also think there's the element to it where this is
(22:52):
not how Bill Belichick ever acted. He didn't say anything
one way or the other when they won or lost.
They does the If we lose, it's on the coaches.
They win, it's the players. But Belichick was the same guy.
He just shut down on everybody. Colin Cowhert said this
about the Cowboys and the ESPAN report that the fans
(23:12):
access to the players being a hit with Jerry Jones
but has worn thin on the players.
Speaker 4 (23:17):
Jerry thinks the fans' presence inside the facility inspires the
players and staff, when clearly the article signifies it annoys them. Now,
is this the reason the Cowboys this year are struggling.
Is this the reason the Cowboys are struggling? Of course not,
but it does show you this constant showmanship, this fascination
(23:39):
with his players being spectacles and touchable with the fans,
and the radio hits and the constant need revenue promotion
over everything. It wears on people. Are the Cowboys just
a Bubba Gump shrimp franchise with tackling? Is it all
(23:59):
about merche in sales? Jerry's owner GM. The GM thing
is a full time job. The guys I know that
are gms don't sleep much. Secondly, Jerry sees Dallas revenue
and ratings and think it's working.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
But it's not.
Speaker 2 (24:14):
Really.
Speaker 4 (24:14):
Every GM I know value above everything, seeking value, film junkies, grinders,
not impulsive. But to be Jerry in a billionaire it
takes a visionary and marketer and promoter and hey, little
light on the details, but hey, we'll make it work.
(24:36):
And they're in conflict.
Speaker 2 (24:41):
Yeah, I mean I think we're over doing it a bit.
I do the fans access thing. Nobody wants to feel
like you're a giraffe at the at the zoo. On
the other hand, he does it to make money. Right,
that's a valuable thing to them and that's not going
away anytime soon. Many people have copied that. Look at
(25:03):
all these new buildings and there's all a section where
guys are at the bar and they can watch the
players walk by. That's that's just it. It's a different
way to create an experience more so than just a
football game.
Speaker 3 (25:16):
Now.
Speaker 2 (25:16):
Is Jerry Jones act running tired? Maybe? But I mean
they've been good the past two years. They're all banged
up now and I'm not sure all that they added
the right defensive coordinator. I think that has more to
do with it than any of this other stuff. That's
what the Fox said. What say, let's find out who
or what's annoying Jason Stewart, and now it's.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
Your annoying, Doug tyreek Hill. I think if you, if
you did, if you did like an accounting of this
segment and you're like, how many times has so and
so been in this and then you show how many times.
(26:01):
I think Steven A is at the top, but tyreek
Hill is close to the top of mentions in this segment,
and he did something very annoying this week. So to
a uh Tua Taga he's returning, and Tyreek Hill could
not be more more excited about this. We're back, baby.
Speaker 2 (26:25):
The man.
Speaker 1 (26:26):
We're back this week.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
Maybe let's go What do you mean? What do you mean?
We're back? What do you what does that mean? You've
been a member of this team. You are supposedly a
transformative player that chose to leave the best team on
the planet because you weren't getting touches. You have completely
(26:48):
disappeared the last three to four weeks. How do I
know this? Because I chose you to I chose to
take you second overall in a fantasy draft. You have
fallen off a map since Tua went down. This isn't
and I blame you. I mean, if receivers are worth
the money that the receivers are getting nowadays, it shouldn't
(27:10):
matter who the quarterback is. You should be able to
find a way to make an impact and he hasn't.
So don't give me this bans all back bullshit. Why
have you disappeared the last four weeks?
Speaker 2 (27:23):
It's a great question. I love that you're calling apport
and more than anything, it's annoying, right, It's it's it's
like to look over here, look over here, just don't
pay attention to the fact that I haven't done anything recently.
Speaker 3 (27:38):
There is a there's a like a socioeconomic and a
very nuanced angle to this next thing that annoys me.
And I'm going to admit upfront there is not a fix,
and I don't blame the Dodgers, but the name of
the segment is you're annoying. So this annoys me. Okay,
there's a report out right now on bleacher Report Yankees
(28:00):
Dodgers World Series tickets is averaging seventeen hundred dollars on
the secondary market. I guess they call it. Fernandovelin Zuela
passed away two nights ago, or at least it was
announced he passed away two nights ago. Fernando Velanzuela literally
brought Mexican Americans into the fold. They were alienated in
(28:20):
the early fifties when the Dodgers moved to town because
they were uprooted from their homes in Chavez Ravine, and
it alienated an entire community of immigrants. Fernando Mania brought
all of those Mexican Americans into the fold. Of nineteen
eighty one, those same Mexican Americans had kids and generations
(28:42):
of Dodger fans. And I'm not saying that Mexican Americans
are poor, that's not my take care, but there's a
socioeconomic reality to this. Those fans are not going to
be able to afford to go to Dodgers World Series games,
and that's annoying.
Speaker 2 (29:02):
It is. I mean, it's the sad thing about the
business of sports, which is we have priced out the
average everyday fan, you know. I mean, I remember when
I was a kid growing up, and I'm stadium used
to have seventy five thousand seats, then they cut it back,
and when it had seventy five thousand seats, it was
five dollars to sit in the family section. But you know,
(29:24):
the people that help get you there oftentimes don't get
a chance to go to the bigger events. I agree,
it's annoying, it sucks, but it does happen everywhere.
Speaker 3 (29:32):
So Rob Manfred, I'm not a huge fan. I think
he's gotten a lot of credit the last couple of
years for the rule changes that have sped up the
game and whatnot. But he was on Dan Patrick yesterday
and he was specifically asked and offered this up about
abs automated balls and strikes, which takes balls and strikes
out of the hands of the home point umpire and
(29:55):
it computerizes it. It'll be automatic c like you're in tennis.
When the there's a out or or in line, it's
just black or white. There's no human factor. And this
is his response to including ABS in Major League Baseball.
Speaker 9 (30:11):
We're going to test this challenge system in spring training
with major league players and we're going to try to
determine whether the system we have is up to snuff
to be used by major league players. I think you
will see some version of the automated strikes on in
the big leagues in the next four years.
Speaker 3 (30:32):
In the next in the next four years, we're going
to see some version of ABS. And I think you
heard there that there's going to be an intermediary point
where they're testing the challenge system, which the challenge system
is not going to take it away from the umpires.
It's just going to allow the teams to challenge the
human aspect of it balls and strikes. How about you
(30:55):
you cut out the middle man and you make this
change last week, computerized strikes and balls. The home plane
Empire has a lot other responsibilities. We're not losing jobs,
and how about this. The World Series audience isn't going
to see how incompetent your home plan umpires are. They'll
just know that if they want to complain about balls
and strikes, they're going to complain about the computerized version
(31:19):
of balls and strikes. And your umpiring crew doesn't look foolish.
Speaker 2 (31:25):
I can't believe it. The idea of four years like
they've been using it in the minor leagues, it works,
works well, badly needed in the major leagues, and I
don't get it. Are we worried about the umpires union?
The umpires are still used. This just helps take away
something that they frankly have lost the rights on many
(31:46):
people's accounts to do, which is called balls and strikes.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
The I mean one of the things that all of us,
everybody listening to this, you, me and Sam, we all
want to get to the point where we get paid
the same or more money to do less. Like you're
not infringing on the on these umpires. Uh work ethic.
You know, it doesn't make any sense to me, And
(32:10):
I need a good answer. Maybe maybe I'll get a
great answer. When we had John Morosi on two hours ago,
maybe we had a great answer from John on this.
So you got Rob Manfred, the unfortunate Dodger tickets outpricing
the uh former immigrant families, and then Tyreek Hill is
always annoying.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
Well, Tyreek Hill is always annoying. Could win every day.
I think Tyreek Hill though, especially now, like especially now,
especially now, this is and I have heard from people
in Miami that they have a major problems within that
locker room that Tua and a couple of the other
longtime leaders are trying to help with, which you know
Kalaias Campbell, which is you know that Mike McDaniel has
(32:53):
not made that tight enough ship and he and Jaylen
Waddell just kind of do what they want. And you know,
you can't play football that way. You have to the
quarterback has to know where you're going. And the only
thing he should be saying right now is I haven't
done enough with two out. That's on me. That's what leadership.
A guy who's played in the Super Bowl, won a
(33:14):
Super Bowl. That's what he should be. That's what he
should be saying. He's not because he's not about the
right things and it's really hurting his team. So Tyreek Hill,
you continue to be an.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
Why are we doing this.
Speaker 1 (33:33):
Because we can?
Speaker 3 (33:36):
So just for the listeners, you're about to hear someone
that is an adult say something very immature. Stefan Diggs
got into he was the reason why there was that
I think pregame on field scuffle, and he explained it
this way.
Speaker 10 (33:57):
I was walking to the locker room beginning in the game,
I are somebody chirping and I'm never the bigger person.
So there's all goingroup fucking will myself or with a
minute or so, I'm never a bigger person. I ain't
letting shit go. You know, obviously they picked it up
or whatever, but I ain't with the football tough guys
is what it is all the time. But I ain't
(34:20):
getting into all that just I ain't letting shit go there.
Speaker 3 (34:23):
So, Doug, what if what if you had a heart
to heart conversation with one of your players about their
actions on the court and you got the response of, hey, coach,
I ain't never been the bigger person. I'm not going
to start now.
Speaker 2 (34:37):
So you don't play them. It's really easy, like you
don't even have to have some confrontational talk. You just
don't play them. When they figured it out or they don't.
And by the way, all that talk and all the
I don't let things go. He didn't do anything against
the Packers. Their passing game was a mess. Joe Mixon
(34:58):
did a good job. So we talked about our motto
as the team has walked the walk, don't talk to talk.
He can't do it. So he's a talker. Why could
we play it for you because we can. That's it
for the ind Modus podcast. Check out the radio show
every day three to five Easter and twelve to Pacific,
Fox Sports Radio, iHeartRadio app. I'm Doug Gottlieb.
