Last night we watched the Rams just dismantle the Vikings
offensive line, their offense in general.

It was it was ugly. There's no other way to
around it.

It was just absolutely positively an ugly, ugly thing. And
we've gotten this place where, I mean, my goodness, people
are going top rope on. Three quarterbacks have lost and
not played particularly well. And those three quarterbacks, now I
guess in the public's mind are awful. And I watched
(01:29):
Sam Donald last night and then I talked to my
good friend Danie Rolovsky via text and I just asked him.
I was like, hey, what percentage of that was Donald?
And he's like, well, what percentage that was offensive line?
He's like ninety percent offensive line? And that's what I saw.
I mean, Look, no quarterbacks survives that type of onslaught.

To them all day long because they're not always disciplined
in their lanes. But if he pulls this thing down
right there he can he has a good five seven yards,
if not more.

Well, he was under durest the entire game, the entire game,
and I know where Lovsky's a former quarterback and a
long time backup sometimes starter, and he has tendency.

Says to side with the quarterback.

But if you ask anybody in football, they'll say it
mirrored their plan mirrored that of the Lions, and the
Lions did the same thing to Donald.

And I think where some in between how he was being.

Seen and valued and some sort of hack backup that
got exposed. Like I get it, he wasn't particularly good.
I get it, he was seeing ghosts. But I just
when do we get to this place where, I mean,
you go back and you look at some of these
quarterbacks that have lost. And we mentioned it yesterday with

with Justin Herbert, Like Justin Herbert a great year, He's
a good quarterback, didn't play particularly well. Offensive line also
didn't protect all that well. But if you go to
social media or go to media, oh my gosh, top
rope in terms of negativity. Now there is a part
of it. There is a part of it that needs
(03:52):
to be discussed. Because I've brought this up and I
haven't heard anywhere else. You know, people talk about the
NFC North and you know, the Packers losing the Vikings
losing and we'll see what the Lions do. It's important
to point out that what place you finished the year
before does determine the level.

Of your schedule for the next year.

But I think I'm the only one who said this
on national radio and national TV. That division, the NFC
North crossed over against the NFC West and the AFC South.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
The NFC West and the AFC South. So if you.

Ask yourself, honestly, what's the weakest division in football, you
would say the NFC North.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
And the AFC South.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
And oh yeah, by the way, the Vikings lost to
the Rams twice, so this shouldn't have been a surprise.
They had a good beat on what the Vikings did.
And the Vikings either Sam Darnold, Kevin O'Connell, their offensive
line was on a to adjust. But again, I'm I
(05:05):
get that we have this weird thing with losing playoff
quarterbacks where somehow now they just suck because they didn't
have a particularly a game under duress, and you can
track it like it it. I remember Kyler Murray a
couple of years ago when he lost to the Rams.
(05:25):
Part of it is the Rams are really well coached
and the Rams defensive line is actually very, very good,
and part of it is Sam Donald hadn't played at
that level and his offensive line hadn't played at that level,
and they all got a little bit exposed. But we're
in the everybody wants to throw the baby out with
the bathwater thing and I'm not there byer, Where.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Are you on.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
The the supreme negativity we've seen in some of these losing.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
Quarterbacks, Well, I don't think it's.
Speaker 6 (05:54):
I think that, like the Justin Herbert situation is different
from what it is with Sam Arnold. And so the
conversation that we had that you had yesterday about Justin Herbert,
I think is completely different than the one we're having
about Sam Darnold. And we've had negative conversations about quarterbacks.
In fact, I can almost bet that coming up on Monday,
(06:18):
it was going to say a week for Monday, coming
up on Monday, there will be a conversation either about
Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson and whoever loses that game. Yes,
and that is automatic book it. Let's let's put it
down right now, because whoever doesn't win that.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Game, we just we just we just need to write
negative quarterback conversation yes, in the a's of each hour
of the show, and only thing we need to slide
in is is it Lamar Jackson or is it Josh Allen.
Speaker 6 (06:47):
Yeah, and that's not fair to either either player. I
think that the Herbert conversation I thought was unfair. Now
it doesn't matter in the world of social media. I
think the Donald conversation was entirely in. The whole situation
is entirely unique, and so I'm willing to give leeway

to Justin Herbert because I felt like I've seen it
more from Justin Herbert. But I don't think that Sam Donald,
unfortunately is given the same leeway for a variety of reasons.
And so that's why I think last night that the
criticism almost in a way is or just at least
the conversation Doug. I don't eyone want to say the

criticism the conversation about Donald is different than everything and
anything else because of what they did in the draft,
because of what he has done and then what has
transpired over the last couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
I would agree they're very unique.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
It's a very unique story, and I just I think
we're holding the last five years against him in one
game and it's like you're waiting for You're waiting for
something bad to happen. It honestly feels like what it's
like to be a Charger fan in general, right, just
waiting on something bad to happen, and in the second
something bad happens or you gotta have bag in.

Like ah ah.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
I don't think I've ever and you tell me if
I'm wrong, because you've been with me now for seven
and a half years. I don't remember ever this year
saying he's an elite top five quarterback. What I've said
is he obviously was super talented. I've always loved the
guy personally and how he plays, and if it's me,
(08:30):
I would rather him be my starter.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
At least I know his flaws.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
Then JJ McCarthy, who I have no idea what he
looks like as an NFL quarterback.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
Correct.

I don't agree with your assessment, but I think that
your assessment of the situation is fair. I look at
it and say, I know Sam Donald's ceiling, and so
while I'm not taking the previous five years and holding
it before holding it against him, I feel that there
is evidence enough to get an idea of who Sam
Donald is and what Sam Donald is, even if these
(09:02):
last eighteen games that he's played have been mostly very
very good MVP sort of candidate. My takeaway just to
tell you is that to your point about the schedule,
it's correct, but it's that Sam Donald isn't good enough
or special enough or will max out as a player
(09:22):
that is enough to get you over the top in
that situation. And that's why I think that you at
least owe it to yourself. Whether JJ McCarthy is or
isn't the answer, you at least owe it to yourself
to see that through. Since he used a first round
pick on.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
Him, well that's fair. I don't know if you have
to do it next year.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
Again, it all depends on how much Sam Donald wants
in order to stay. But again it's a fair thing
to look at. And I obviously you're holding his pasted
against him, but holding his past against him is just Hey,
you feel like you have a better gauge because you
have more games, you know you have, you have more
games to kind of go by, right, that's the we
(10:04):
have way more tape on him. You know who Sam
Donald is. That's that's kind of the overwhelming statement. And
you feel like that got exposed last night. Yeah, yes, yes, Okay,
I'm going to disagree, and I would if I'm the Vikings,
I try and get him on the cheap, relatively cheap,
(10:24):
and then I see if it organically becomes JJ McCarthy.
But I know I have a guy who can carry
us through the regular season. Okay, So let me help
you with another argument, though.

Can I just say something on this? It's actually a question.
Speaker 6 (10:37):
Yes, do you think that another NFL team will pay
more to Sam Donald or offers Sam Donald more than
what the Vikings will this offseason?
Speaker 2 (10:47):
Depends what the Vikings offer, and.
Speaker 6 (10:49):
I think it doesn't even matter. I think they will.
I think that Donald, to your point, Doug has shown
enough that he is an option for another team out there,
and the Vikings, I don't think, because of that, will
have any motivation to try to match because the price
is probably just going to be higher than what they
obviously just paid for him.
Speaker 1 (11:08):
Yeah, I mean, I don't think he can hit the market.
If he hits the market, then he's going to be
gone and somebody will pay a little bit more. Okay,
So can I here Here's what I like to do. Now,
have we talked about this that I was on the
debate in the debate club when I.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Was in high school years ago.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
Yes, okay, so I was in the debate club model
United Nations, and I've done this for a lot of
debates that if this is true, then this must be
true as well.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Correct. Okay, So again it's a debate style.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
So I do think that one thing that most people believe,
and I do think it's mostly true, is what you
are in the playoffs is who you really are as quarterback.
Who you are in the playoffs is who you are
as a quarterback. It's a lot like in life people
(12:00):
say who you are as a drunk is who you
are underneath all the surface exterior, right, which I believe.
Steve Kerr says who you are as a basketball player,
how you play as basketball players, how you live your life.
I also think that's true, and I think a lot
of people believe, including NFL people, in terms of your ceiling,
(12:22):
how you play in the playoffs is a true determinant
to how you are in life, how you are overall
as a quarterback?
Speaker 2 (12:29):
Is that? Do you do you?
Speaker 6 (12:31):
I don't go by that statement, I don't, but do people. Yes,
playoffs are what matter.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
Okay, so, and Lamar Jackson was good the other day,
but it was against a foe that they should have dominated. Right,
the question becomes, if we're going to have a fair
conversation about Lamar Jackson and let's see what happens against Buffalo.
Right to this point, he is far below that of
(12:58):
the MVP two times MVP status in the playoffs. And
what I find to be really interesting is there's a
lot of people who push back and say, like, we
need to criticize these quarterbacks because people criticize Lamar Jackson.
And I thought the criticism of Lamar Jackson was fair.
That's fair because everybody said the same thing. He's really good,
(13:21):
but man, he's got to throw the bell better from
the pocket in the playoffs and that's what Kansas City
Forever had made him do, that's what other teams have
made him do. So again, if you're going to use
that argument, I'm not saying you Dan, I'm saying if
people are going to use the argument of who you
are in the playoffs is who you really are? I
think Lamar then falls way short of the MVP status,

much like Donald last night felt way short of this
season's possible MVP status.

This has a lot of same energy vibes because I
just I don't think it's fair to compare Sam Darnold
to the Jackson.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
I don't think it's fair to Lamar Jackson.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
It's not they're not.

Lamar Jackson's far more accomplished and a far better quarterback. Right, yes,
but but again again, if we're if we're comparing brass tacks.

It's the argument I know, yeah, yeah.

And I get it's a debate tactic that I was
taught when I was at Tustin High School and I
use it all the time, and it is a good argument,
which is like, hey, if this is true, then this
must be true. If it's the old transfit property, if
equals be in equal C, then a must equal.
Speaker 6 (14:31):
See treat everybody fair, but you don't have to treat
them the same. That's how I look at it. Like,
in terms of how we're looking at it, I know
what you're you're trying to get at, and to me,
it just screams of I can read it on social media,
it's not even on my screen. Have that same energy
that you had for Sam Donald with Lamar Jackson. If

it happens but I just don't think there. I think
it's apples to oranges.

Well, I'm there's same draft class. Lamar Jackson's been far
better as a regular season quarterback. Now he's also played
for a far better organization, played for only one organization
the whole time, and up until this last year, with
a far better defense than he's ever played with so
outside of the the Niners last year. So I think
it's an interesting discussion. Even if I admit I was

a bigger Sam Donald fan. Lamar Jackson's been the way
better NFL quarterback. But there's some contexts that belongs to it.

you're gonna coach another quarterback and we're not gonna waste
a first round pick on your son when we have

a quarterback and he's not gonna play. I don't know
the contents of that conversation. Maybe they ultimately come out,
but just to guess, it's one of those courtesy calls
that where you flesh out ideas and flesh out thoughts,
knowing at at the end of the call it's not
really gonna work.

Would it be interesting? Sure? Do I think Dion can
do it? Yeah?

Of course, if you hire good enough people. I mean,
look look at what Dan Campbell has been able to do.
He has an elite offensive coordinator, an elite defensive coordinator,
and the things he knows as a former tight end,
as a former special teams coach. He coaches, he teaches
and they're good at it, and he's a great leader.
(18:57):
These are all things that Dion Sanders could do now.
I also believe what Jerry Jones said earlier the season
is true that Dion's greatest strength is his ability to
sell and sell himself and sell a program. And that's
more the college landscape in the NFL landscape. But could
Deon be the coach of the Cowboys?

The problem is there's just no way in which you
coach your son. I don't think you coach your son
even if Dak Prescott doesn't exist, And with Dak Prescott there,
it just doesn't happen.

a surprise you. Butler wants to be traded and it

was all about a contract extension which he's using as
his leverage to get traded this year. And at this
point they haven't found a suitor. But that feels like
something they will ultimately find, doesn't it. Yeah, that feels
like someday will ultimately fine buyer. If you were Jerry Jones,

who would you hire?
Speaker 6 (20:11):
Wow, you have to take care of the offense, So
I do think that you continue the offensive theme. I mean,
Ben Johnson would be the number one option. I don't
think Kellen Moore is that bad. I don't think Cliff
Kingsbury would be a bad option.
Speaker 3 (20:31):
But if I could hire Ben Johnson.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
I would I would as well.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
Now, the only thing about Ben Johnson is we have
no idea what kind of head coach he'd be because
he's a fabulous offensive coordinator and the skill set for
one is not necessarily the skill set for the other.
Speaker 2 (20:48):
But he is the hottest name.
Speaker 1 (20:50):
And what's interesting about the Cowboys is people think that
the Cowboys, and some of it is true, but people
think that the Cowboys it's about you know, they've they've
always been about.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
The splashy hire.
Speaker 1 (21:03):
Well, I could make the sale that Ben Johnson is
the splashy hire because he's the guy that everybody wants.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
Yeah, that's the guy that everybody wants.

Right now, that would be the splashy higher. But I
do think that Jerry Jones has shown at times that
while there is a Bill Parcells, there's also the hiring
of Dave Campo. I don't think Mike McCarthy was splashy.
I think that we had quite a crooked eye towards
the hiring when it happened, turned out three playoff appearances,
(21:36):
twelve wins, but just couldn't get them past the divisional
round in the playoffs, only made it there once.
Speaker 3 (21:42):
Yeah, it's.
Speaker 6 (21:44):
It's it's Jerry Jones is loyal. He's loyal to his guys,
whether it's cheapness or loyalty, whatever the reason is. Mike
McCarthy was there for five years and there was no
reason to get rid of him after a twelve win season.
I understand the situation with Kellen Moore. Here's one other
thing to point out. The offense actually got better when
Kellen Moore left Yeah, and when Mike McCarthy ended up
(22:06):
taking it over himself. And it's not meant to be
an indictment on Kellen Moore. It's just that Mike McCarthy
actually did do a decent job with Dallas and that
scenario last year, their offense was better than it ever
was during the Kellen Moore tenure in Dallas.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (22:20):
So and listen, and there have been a lot of
people in Philadelphia critical of Kellen Moore this year.
Speaker 3 (22:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (22:26):
And the other thing with like splash and big splash
hires last year, the biggest splash was Jim Harbaugh and
that thing has worked out well with the Chargers. Sure
you're not going to get that every year, but I
would say the higher with the least amount of splash
was the Cowboys defensive coordinator who's now the head coach
at Washington, Dan Quinn. Guess what dan Quinn is still
(22:46):
coaching right now. Something that other teams and players don't
have the luxury. And it's not like they had a
head start on everyone else. They picked second in the
draft and there got their star quarterback. So that helps
you mentioned putting a staff together. So the dan Quinn
hire eleven months ago was not one that was thought
(23:06):
of with great excitement and great buzz. And now you
look at what's happening now and they're winning, and I
think we think that Washington is probably one of the
places with the most buzz, if not the most, in
the NFL.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
Do you think that's true. I mean, I know you
think that's true. I'm wondering if people it didn't have
a lot of buzz. But I mean dan Quinn was
he dead coach the Falcons and when the went to the.
Speaker 3 (23:29):
Super Bowl, he was.
Speaker 6 (23:30):
But there were there were eight coaching hires last year.
If I believe I got the numbers, seven or eight?
Speaker 2 (23:36):
Eight? Okay, wait, so let me see if I can.
Can I catch I name him? You tell me?
Speaker 6 (23:40):
Okay, yeah, I couldn't even remember if there're seven or eight,
so I hope I can remember them all.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
But go ahead, Well, Raiders, they already fired their coach.
Speaker 3 (23:47):
Sure that's one.
Speaker 1 (23:48):
Okay, that's one. I like, you know I do when
you I don't know if you do this. I like
to go west to east. I like to go west
to east.

The most obvious out of them.
Speaker 1 (23:59):
Oh Seahawks. Yep, okay Seahawks. And they were mid as
the kids say, right, yeah, that's actually better than mid.
That's that's better than I thought. I will get back
to this conversation in a second. Let me get John
millcoff on. He of course hosts three and Out that's
on the Volume podcast network. He joined us in the
Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. What percentage of
(24:21):
blame for the Vikings offensive implosion would you put on
Sam Donald?
Speaker 5 (24:34):
Obviously he'd bear some blame. But to me, in a
playoff scenario where your coach is as highly regarded as
Kevin O'Connell and he's the offensive play caller, I think
he did an extremely poor job because last week he
had the blueprint where his quarterback kind of got pretty
rattled by pressure. And it was clear early on that
(24:56):
the Vikings offensive line and in barenans to them, their
star left tackle towards his knee has been out, so
they got backups in there and they were getting overwhelmed. Well,
the easiest way to help out a quarterback, and Darnold
looked again a little like the Lions game. It wasn't
as much overthrowing guys, though as the game went on
he definitely did. It was like he was just holding
onto the ball the easiest way to help him out.
(25:18):
It's like in your sport, get to the get to
the basket, get some freevieus gets out run the ball.
And sometimes Kevin O'Connell acts like, you know, he's played mad,
and then he throws it all the time. And that's
what they had done throughout the season and it works.
But in this specific game, it was clear you're getting
your guy's getting pressured. He doesn't look right, and Ankers
(25:40):
busted a big run. What's his name, Kieren william or
not Kieren Williams on the rams, but Aaron Jones I think,
had like a thirteen yard run. So they had a
couple explosive runs. But the moment on like first down,
he runs the ball and they gained one yard. He
was locked to throw it the next two plays and
mcveigh's guy, Chrishula was just all over him. So I listen,
(26:01):
everyone's gonna, you know, take a dump on Sam Narl
and I get it. He's an easy one. But I
thought Kevin O'Connell just refused to run the ball in
the first half when the game was still closed. Now
in the second got but I think, you know Lafloor's
Kyle's h you know, he's much more like McVeigh. But
McVeigh has these moments where he's like, last night, I'll
(26:23):
just be physical and we'll keep even a pass. The
game was relatively simple around the line of scrimmage. Let's
face that, Kevin O'Connell's got like some Philadelphia Andy Reid.
He wants to throw bumps and that got him in
trouble last night because his offensive line was getting warped
and his quarterback was kind of resorting back to uh
and I think a lot of guys resort back to this.
(26:45):
When you start getting hit, it really rattles you.
Speaker 2 (26:49):
Yeah, nobody likes to get.
Speaker 5 (26:51):
Hit the other Here's the other thing, Doug one conversation
is like, okay, let's just let's Sam walk or whatever.
Go to JJ. Kevin O'Connell, like we just discussed, is
a love to pass the ball. JJ McCarthy's college career
was defined by a guy who did not depend on
(27:11):
him passing the ball and running the ball and playing defense.
That is not how Kevin O'Connell likes to coach. So
you're going to bring this guy off an injury into
an offense that, let's face it, he wants to throw
at thirty five plus times a game and throw deep
down the field. So I think it's a pretty bold
move to just say, Okay, we'll go to JJ, which
I would say is definitely on the table now, and
(27:33):
think that it's going to be a seamless transition.
Speaker 1 (27:38):
Okay, what about what about Justin Herbert? There's a lot
of criticism of Herbert after his playoff performance. How valid
is that criticism? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (27:49):
To me, that's one that you just go, Okay, he
had a really bad game. Balls were flying on him.
The one that he overthrew McConkie wasn't even that close.
That's just a killer pass in a moment where it
just it just can't really happen. But you know, with
he didn't play well. But I thought Joe Walt was
kind of getting worked and in fareness, like he's going
(28:10):
up against Will Anderson, a high end top three pick,
and Danelle Hunter, who they gave a two year contract
to and literally guaranteed every penny at fifty million dollars total.
So it's like that's just that's a really really tough matchup.
The other thing with the Texans. You know, CJ. Stroud
looked awful as well, and then that moment that that
(28:31):
that snap, you know, he missed the snap and then
he made that crazy play. He kind of turned back
into last year's But it's not we acted. I bet
on the Texans in that game because I was like,
road playoff games are difficult, and the Chargers they do
have to win a lot of games, you know, nineteen
to seventeen to go on the road against the team
(28:53):
that if the quarterback just plays okay. They do have
a lot of high end down two pass rushers, single's
a stud. Mixings are really good player. Obviously Nico Collins, well,
I think of what the Chargers would do for Nico Collins.
And the other thing is, and this is where coaching
like this is the playoffs. Like McVeigh worked Kevin O'Connell,
which isn't that big of a deal. Mcvay's won eight
(29:13):
playoff games. He's kind of good at what he's doing.
He's probably gonna be a Hall of Famer one day.
And Demiko Ryans, you know, like the younger version of Rabel.
He's really good. So I think we act it. Listen,
he played bad. I'm not trying to make an excuse here,
but they lost to a team that the coaches viewed
really highly. The quarterback went the second overall, Like, they
(29:34):
lost to a team we didn't play well throughout the season,
but won a playoff game last year and won another
playoff game this year. It's not like some random little
engine that could No.
Speaker 2 (29:44):
No, I think it's a it's a great point like
c J.
Speaker 1 (29:46):
Stroud didn't have a particularly good year right for a
myriad of reasons, didn't have a particular year. Justin Herbert
I thought had an outstanding here all things considered, But
when they played ahead to head, Justin Herbert didn't play well.
CJ Sto played okay, and all the criticism on Justin
Harvers like okay, but the seventeen games, what do they buy?

Okay? So where are you? Dan? Byron and I had
this discussion to start.
Speaker 1 (30:08):
To show how much do we value how you play
in the playoffs in a one game scenario versus how
you play in the regular season.
Speaker 4 (30:19):
Well, I think it.
Speaker 5 (30:19):
Gets the over reaction. And I'm guilty of this too,
because you know I was thinking about this. Let's face,
the wild card weekend was kind of boring, and you
can't escape a boring game because it's the only game
on television where when we turn on games on Sunday morning,
there are anywhere from what five to eight games going
at one time. So if you're having a bad game
(30:40):
or just playing in kind of a sleepy game, people
will change the channel and watch other games or have
the four blocks on and not focus on you, where
you kind of just get exposed in the sense of
and you know, the Chargers aren't the Chiefs or the
you know, the forty nine Ers or even the Jets
where it feels like they're on national television all the time,
at least this year. They will be next year. So
I think people just he's a polarizing player because he's
(31:04):
considered part of the Big five and the reality is
he's the fifth guy and he's not on the level
of the top four. And like, I will defend him
that if he was available relatives, do all the other
quarterbacks not named Burl, Allen, Mahomes and Lamar, Like I
promise you these gms and these coaches would would drive
(31:25):
their quarterback to Los Angeles to make that trade.

Yeah, good question. I think your options are kind of limited.
I mean that's why I think Dion like it's not fake,
like he's going I know, he puts out the statement yesterday,
but he's gonna be tucked like it's this isn't gonna die.
Mike Zimmers this guy too. I know I thought headline
today Zimmer might retire. But that's like one of his
like close friends, you know, coached him in the nineties
(31:59):
for the Cowboy So pretty easily transition to keeping this
defensive coordinator. I'm not the biggest Pat Schirmer guy, but
he has an NFL coordinator as though c so Boom.
You bring him down, I would imagine Kellen Moore will
be very much in the mix. I mean, that was
a big time Jerry guy, and it's kind of a
double whammy. Especially if the Eagles win again this week,
(32:19):
you kind of steal him back from your division rival.
But I think when you look at the names, it's
hard to think, like, yeah, I don't know Jerry's going
to do that. He's probably more likely, based on his history,
to just hire Kellen Moore than he would be Deon
Sanders or even Belichick. And listen, people can poo poo.
You know the reports, and I see Lombardy going back
(32:40):
with pro football talk, But I would say non game
day with Bill, his defining attribute as like a as
a coach was how ruthless and cutthroat he is. So
this notion that he's going to have this crazy, crazy
loyalty to North Carolina if he was like damn O
coach Cowboys. I mean, have you guys watched the last
(33:01):
twenty five years of his career. I mean you got
rid of Tom Brady, let alone countless other Pro Bowler,
star players, and you know, like his best friends in
the coaching business, he just cut off if he starts
hating you. So I would say everything is on the
table with Bill, even though I still have a hard
time seeing Jerry do that. But at a two years old,
I don't know if you saw the report. One thing
(33:22):
that bothered Jerry was kind of the Cowboys fans become
an apathetic with Mike McCarthy. That's where I think Dion
might might have some juice, and Belichick obviously would too.
Just give you a big, a big headline that right
or wrong. We know Jerry likes that.

I know they lost two games, but one team beat
him in the regular season, and Pat Mahomes reached the
at least the conference finals.

Every game he's been a starter. Every year he's been
a starter.

The defense is outstanding, and the offense hasn't been great
this year, but it doesn't seem to matter. They find
ways to win games, especially this time of year.

Last night the Vikings were ousted from the postseason rank
the top three Minnesota teams you'd actually like to see
win a championship. Links excluded because they have won a

got the Gophers, golfers I have, and I got the
I have the Vikings, right anybody else?

Let's go to a hockey expert, Sam Iowa, Sam, no clue,

So but I'd like to see I mean, that would

It feels like every year that would happen and you
just feel bad. I mean, they did build an open
air stadium in Minnesota. I'm not really sure. I mean,
I know it's a great park in the summer, but
not really built. Not not really built with the idea that, hey,
we're going to be played late in the playoffs.

But I'll go Twins one.

For those of us that can remember the Homer Hanky days,
that crowd was a home field advantage. Sure, so a
lot cheaper to build a stadium without a roof, can
totally get it. But to your point of a dome
and playing indoors, that did help Minnesota during their eighty
seven and ninety one championships. I was even gonna say
(37:27):
Gopher hockey, Gopher men's hockey with their championships, but they
haven't won it in like twenty years right into the
title game. Yeah, a year or two ago, but it's
been been a drought for the Gophers. There, all right, Doug,
rank the top threings, that top three things that happened
to you at age forty eight, because today is your
last day of forty eight.

Last night we watched the Rams just dismantle the Vikings
offensive line, their offense in general.

It was it was ugly. There's no other way to
around it.

It was just absolutely positively an ugly, ugly thing. And
we've gotten this place where, I mean, my goodness, people
are going top rope on. Three quarterbacks have lost and
not played particularly well. And those three quarterbacks, now I
guess in the public's mind are awful. And I watched
(01:29):
Sam Donald last night and then I talked to my
good friend Danie Rolovsky via text and I just asked him.
I was like, hey, what percentage of that was Donald?
And he's like, well, what percentage that was offensive line?
He's like ninety percent offensive line? And that's what I saw.
I mean, Look, no quarterbacks survives that type of onslaught.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
None.
Speaker 1 (01:54):

Well, he was under durest the entire game, the entire game,
and I know where Lovsky's a former quarterback and a
long time backup sometimes starter, and he has tendency.

Says to side with the quarterback.

But if you ask anybody in football, they'll say it
mirrored their plan mirrored that of the Lions, and the
Lions did the same thing to Donald.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
And I think where some in between how he was being.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Seen and valued and some sort of hack backup that
got exposed. Like I get it, he wasn't particularly good.
I get it, he was seeing ghosts. But I just
when do we get to this place where, I mean,
you go back and you look at some of these
quarterbacks that have lost. And we mentioned it yesterday with
(03:31):
with Justin Herbert, Like Justin Herbert a great year, He's
a good quarterback, didn't play particularly well. Offensive line also
didn't protect all that well. But if you go to
social media or go to media, oh my gosh, top
rope in terms of negativity. Now there is a part
of it. There is a part of it that needs
(03:52):
to be discussed. Because I've brought this up and I
haven't heard anywhere else. You know, people talk about the
NFC North and you know, the Packers losing the Vikings
losing and we'll see what the Lions do. It's important
to point out that what place you finished the year
before does determine the level.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
Of your schedule for the next year.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
But I think I'm the only one who said this
on national radio and national TV. That division, the NFC
North crossed over against the NFC West and the AFC South.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
The NFC West and the AFC South. So if you.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Ask yourself, honestly, what's the weakest division in football, you
would say the NFC North.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
And the AFC South.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
And oh yeah, by the way, the Vikings lost to
the Rams twice, so this shouldn't have been a surprise.
They had a good beat on what the Vikings did.
And the Vikings either Sam Darnold, Kevin O'Connell, their offensive
line was on a to adjust. But again, I'm I
(05:05):
get that we have this weird thing with losing playoff
quarterbacks where somehow now they just suck because they didn't
have a particularly a game under duress, and you can
track it like it it. I remember Kyler Murray a
couple of years ago when he lost to the Rams.
(05:25):
Part of it is the Rams are really well coached
and the Rams defensive line is actually very, very good,
and part of it is Sam Donald hadn't played at
that level and his offensive line hadn't played at that level,
and they all got a little bit exposed. But we're
in the everybody wants to throw the baby out with
the bathwater thing and I'm not there byer, Where.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Are you on.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
The the supreme negativity we've seen in some of these losing.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
Quarterbacks, Well, I don't think it's.
Speaker 6 (05:54):
I think that, like the Justin Herbert situation is different
from what it is with Sam Arnold. And so the
conversation that we had that you had yesterday about Justin Herbert,
I think is completely different than the one we're having
about Sam Darnold. And we've had negative conversations about quarterbacks.
In fact, I can almost bet that coming up on Monday,
(06:18):
it was going to say a week for Monday, coming
up on Monday, there will be a conversation either about
Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson and whoever loses that game. Yes,
and that is automatic book it. Let's let's put it
down right now, because whoever doesn't win that.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Game, we just we just we just need to write
negative quarterback conversation yes, in the a's of each hour
of the show, and only thing we need to slide
in is is it Lamar Jackson or is it Josh Allen.
Speaker 6 (06:47):
Yeah, and that's not fair to either either player. I
think that the Herbert conversation I thought was unfair. Now
it doesn't matter in the world of social media. I
think the Donald conversation was entirely in. The whole situation
is entirely unique, and so I'm willing to give leeway
(07:07):
to Justin Herbert because I felt like I've seen it
more from Justin Herbert. But I don't think that Sam Donald,
unfortunately is given the same leeway for a variety of reasons.
And so that's why I think last night that the
criticism almost in a way is or just at least
the conversation Doug. I don't eyone want to say the
(07:28):
criticism the conversation about Donald is different than everything and
anything else because of what they did in the draft,
because of what he has done and then what has
transpired over the last couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
I would agree they're very unique.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
It's a very unique story, and I just I think
we're holding the last five years against him in one
game and it's like you're waiting for You're waiting for
something bad to happen. It honestly feels like what it's
like to be a Charger fan in general, right, just
waiting on something bad to happen, and in the second
something bad happens or you gotta have bag in.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
Like ah ah.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
I don't think I've ever and you tell me if
I'm wrong, because you've been with me now for seven
and a half years. I don't remember ever this year
saying he's an elite top five quarterback. What I've said
is he obviously was super talented. I've always loved the
guy personally and how he plays, and if it's me,
(08:30):
I would rather him be my starter.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
At least I know his flaws.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
Then JJ McCarthy, who I have no idea what he
looks like as an NFL quarterback.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
Correct.
Speaker 6 (08:41):
I don't agree with your assessment, but I think that
your assessment of the situation is fair. I look at
it and say, I know Sam Donald's ceiling, and so
while I'm not taking the previous five years and holding
it before holding it against him, I feel that there
is evidence enough to get an idea of who Sam
Donald is and what Sam Donald is, even if these
(09:02):
last eighteen games that he's played have been mostly very
very good MVP sort of candidate. My takeaway just to
tell you is that to your point about the schedule,
it's correct, but it's that Sam Donald isn't good enough
or special enough or will max out as a player
(09:22):
that is enough to get you over the top in
that situation. And that's why I think that you at
least owe it to yourself. Whether JJ McCarthy is or
isn't the answer, you at least owe it to yourself
to see that through. Since he used a first round
pick on.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
Him, well that's fair. I don't know if you have
to do it next year.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
Again, it all depends on how much Sam Donald wants
in order to stay. But again it's a fair thing
to look at. And I obviously you're holding his pasted
against him, but holding his past against him is just Hey,
you feel like you have a better gauge because you
have more games, you know you have, you have more
games to kind of go by, right, that's the we
(10:04):
have way more tape on him. You know who Sam
Donald is. That's that's kind of the overwhelming statement. And
you feel like that got exposed last night. Yeah, yes, yes, Okay,
I'm going to disagree, and I would if I'm the Vikings,
I try and get him on the cheap, relatively cheap,
(10:24):
and then I see if it organically becomes JJ McCarthy.
But I know I have a guy who can carry
us through the regular season. Okay, So let me help
you with another argument, though.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
Can I just say something on this? It's actually a question.
Speaker 6 (10:37):
Yes, do you think that another NFL team will pay
more to Sam Donald or offers Sam Donald more than
what the Vikings will this offseason?
Speaker 2 (10:47):
Depends what the Vikings offer, and.
Speaker 6 (10:49):
I think it doesn't even matter. I think they will.
I think that Donald, to your point, Doug has shown
enough that he is an option for another team out there,
and the Vikings, I don't think, because of that, will
have any motivation to try to match because the price
is probably just going to be higher than what they
obviously just paid for him.
Speaker 1 (11:08):
Yeah, I mean, I don't think he can hit the market.
If he hits the market, then he's going to be
gone and somebody will pay a little bit more. Okay,
So can I here Here's what I like to do. Now,
have we talked about this that I was on the
debate in the debate club when I.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Was in high school years ago.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
Yes, okay, so I was in the debate club model
United Nations, and I've done this for a lot of
debates that if this is true, then this must be
true as well.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Correct. Okay, So again it's a debate style.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
So I do think that one thing that most people believe,
and I do think it's mostly true, is what you
are in the playoffs is who you really are as quarterback.
Who you are in the playoffs is who you are
as a quarterback. It's a lot like in life people
(12:00):
say who you are as a drunk is who you
are underneath all the surface exterior, right, which I believe.
Steve Kerr says who you are as a basketball player,
how you play as basketball players, how you live your life.
I also think that's true, and I think a lot
of people believe, including NFL people, in terms of your ceiling,
(12:22):
how you play in the playoffs is a true determinant
to how you are in life, how you are overall
as a quarterback?
Speaker 2 (12:29):
Is that? Do you do you?
Speaker 6 (12:31):
I don't go by that statement, I don't, but do people. Yes,
playoffs are what matter.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
Okay, so, and Lamar Jackson was good the other day,
but it was against a foe that they should have dominated. Right,
the question becomes, if we're going to have a fair
conversation about Lamar Jackson and let's see what happens against Buffalo.
Right to this point, he is far below that of
(12:58):
the MVP two times MVP status in the playoffs. And
what I find to be really interesting is there's a
lot of people who push back and say, like, we
need to criticize these quarterbacks because people criticize Lamar Jackson.
And I thought the criticism of Lamar Jackson was fair.
That's fair because everybody said the same thing. He's really good,
(13:21):
but man, he's got to throw the bell better from
the pocket in the playoffs and that's what Kansas City
Forever had made him do, that's what other teams have
made him do. So again, if you're going to use
that argument, I'm not saying you Dan, I'm saying if
people are going to use the argument of who you
are in the playoffs is who you really are? I
think Lamar then falls way short of the MVP status,
(13:45):
much like Donald last night felt way short of this
season's possible MVP status.

This has a lot of same energy vibes because I
just I don't think it's fair to compare Sam Darnold
to the Jackson.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
I don't think it's fair to Lamar Jackson.

It's not they're not.

Lamar Jackson's far more accomplished and a far better quarterback. Right, yes,
but but again again, if we're if we're comparing brass tacks.

It's the argument I know, yeah, yeah.

And I get it's a debate tactic that I was
taught when I was at Tustin High School and I
use it all the time, and it is a good argument,
which is like, hey, if this is true, then this
must be true. If it's the old transfit property, if
equals be in equal C, then a must equal.

See treat everybody fair, but you don't have to treat
them the same. That's how I look at it. Like,
in terms of how we're looking at it, I know
what you're you're trying to get at, and to me,
it just screams of I can read it on social media,
it's not even on my screen. Have that same energy
that you had for Sam Donald with Lamar Jackson. If

it happens but I just don't think there. I think
it's apples to oranges.

Well, I'm there's same draft class. Lamar Jackson's been far
better as a regular season quarterback. Now he's also played
for a far better organization, played for only one organization
the whole time, and up until this last year, with
a far better defense than he's ever played with so
outside of the the Niners last year. So I think
it's an interesting discussion. Even if I admit I was

a bigger Sam Donald fan. Lamar Jackson's been the way
better NFL quarterback. But there's some contexts that belongs to it.

a conversation doesn't really mean anything. Then you read Dion
Sanders's own his own tweet, and you get even more confused,

Because he's he said he had a great conversation, but
didn't say with that being said, I'm staying at Colorado.

Cut them or trade him, it's one hundred and six

It's not happening. I think that what Jerry Jones is
saying is like, I'd love to have you, but I
just don't see how it works. And it's not like
you're gonna coach another quarterback and we're not gonna waste
a first round pick on your son when we have

a quarterback and he's not gonna play. I don't know
the contents of that conversation. Maybe they ultimately come out,
but just to guess, it's one of those courtesy calls
that where you flesh out ideas and flesh out thoughts,
knowing at at the end of the call it's not
really gonna work.

Would it be interesting? Sure? Do I think Dion can
do it? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (18:33):
Of course, if you hire good enough people. I mean,
look look at what Dan Campbell has been able to do.
He has an elite offensive coordinator, an elite defensive coordinator,
and the things he knows as a former tight end,
as a former special teams coach. He coaches, he teaches
and they're good at it, and he's a great leader.
(18:57):
These are all things that Dion Sanders could do now.
I also believe what Jerry Jones said earlier the season
is true that Dion's greatest strength is his ability to
sell and sell himself and sell a program. And that's
more the college landscape in the NFL landscape. But could
Deon be the coach of the Cowboys?

The problem is there's just no way in which you
coach your son. I don't think you coach your son
even if Dak Prescott doesn't exist, And with Dak Prescott there,
it just doesn't happen.

was all about a contract extension which he's using as
his leverage to get traded this year. And at this
point they haven't found a suitor. But that feels like
something they will ultimately find, doesn't it. Yeah, that feels
like someday will ultimately fine buyer. If you were Jerry Jones,

who would you hire?
Speaker 6 (20:11):
Wow, you have to take care of the offense, So
I do think that you continue the offensive theme. I mean,
Ben Johnson would be the number one option. I don't
think Kellen Moore is that bad. I don't think Cliff
Kingsbury would be a bad option.
Speaker 3 (20:31):
But if I could hire Ben Johnson.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
I would I would as well.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
Now, the only thing about Ben Johnson is we have
no idea what kind of head coach he'd be because
he's a fabulous offensive coordinator and the skill set for
one is not necessarily the skill set for the other.
Speaker 2 (20:48):
But he is the hottest name.
Speaker 1 (20:50):
And what's interesting about the Cowboys is people think that
the Cowboys, and some of it is true, but people
think that the Cowboys it's about you know, they've they've
always been about.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
The splashy hire.
Speaker 1 (21:03):
Well, I could make the sale that Ben Johnson is
the splashy hire because he's the guy that everybody wants.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
Yeah, that's the guy that everybody wants.
Speaker 6 (21:12):
Right now, that would be the splashy higher. But I
do think that Jerry Jones has shown at times that
while there is a Bill Parcells, there's also the hiring
of Dave Campo. I don't think Mike McCarthy was splashy.
I think that we had quite a crooked eye towards
the hiring when it happened, turned out three playoff appearances,
(21:36):
twelve wins, but just couldn't get them past the divisional
round in the playoffs, only made it there once.
Speaker 3 (21:42):
Yeah, it's.
Speaker 6 (21:44):
It's it's Jerry Jones is loyal. He's loyal to his guys,
whether it's cheapness or loyalty, whatever the reason is. Mike
McCarthy was there for five years and there was no
reason to get rid of him after a twelve win season.
I understand the situation with Kellen Moore. Here's one other
thing to point out. The offense actually got better when
Kellen Moore left Yeah, and when Mike McCarthy ended up
(22:06):
taking it over himself. And it's not meant to be
an indictment on Kellen Moore. It's just that Mike McCarthy
actually did do a decent job with Dallas and that
scenario last year, their offense was better than it ever
was during the Kellen Moore tenure in Dallas.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (22:20):
So and listen, and there have been a lot of
people in Philadelphia critical of Kellen Moore this year.
Speaker 3 (22:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (22:26):
And the other thing with like splash and big splash
hires last year, the biggest splash was Jim Harbaugh and
that thing has worked out well with the Chargers. Sure
you're not going to get that every year, but I
would say the higher with the least amount of splash
was the Cowboys defensive coordinator who's now the head coach
at Washington, Dan Quinn. Guess what dan Quinn is still
(22:46):
coaching right now. Something that other teams and players don't
have the luxury. And it's not like they had a
head start on everyone else. They picked second in the
draft and there got their star quarterback. So that helps
you mentioned putting a staff together. So the dan Quinn
hire eleven months ago was not one that was thought
(23:06):
of with great excitement and great buzz. And now you
look at what's happening now and they're winning, and I
think we think that Washington is probably one of the
places with the most buzz, if not the most, in
the NFL.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
Do you think that's true. I mean, I know you
think that's true. I'm wondering if people it didn't have
a lot of buzz. But I mean dan Quinn was
he dead coach the Falcons and when the went to the.
Speaker 3 (23:29):
Super Bowl, he was.
Speaker 6 (23:30):
But there were there were eight coaching hires last year.
If I believe I got the numbers, seven or eight?
Speaker 2 (23:36):
Eight? Okay, wait, so let me see if I can.
Can I catch I name him? You tell me?
Speaker 6 (23:40):
Okay, yeah, I couldn't even remember if there're seven or eight,
so I hope I can remember them all.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
But go ahead, Well, Raiders, they already fired their coach.
Speaker 3 (23:47):
Sure that's one.
Speaker 1 (23:48):
Okay, that's one. I like, you know I do when
you I don't know if you do this. I like
to go west to east. I like to go west
to east.
Speaker 3 (23:57):
The most obvious out of them.
Speaker 1 (23:59):
Oh Seahawks. Yep, okay Seahawks. And they were mid as
the kids say, right, yeah, that's actually better than mid.
That's that's better than I thought. I will get back
to this conversation in a second. Let me get John
millcoff on. He of course hosts three and Out that's
on the Volume podcast network. He joined us in the
Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. What percentage of
(24:21):
blame for the Vikings offensive implosion would you put on
Sam Donald?
Speaker 5 (24:34):
Obviously he'd bear some blame. But to me, in a
playoff scenario where your coach is as highly regarded as
Kevin O'Connell and he's the offensive play caller, I think
he did an extremely poor job because last week he
had the blueprint where his quarterback kind of got pretty
rattled by pressure. And it was clear early on that
(24:56):
the Vikings offensive line and in barenans to them, their
star left tackle towards his knee has been out, so
they got backups in there and they were getting overwhelmed. Well,
the easiest way to help out a quarterback, and Darnold
looked again a little like the Lions game. It wasn't
as much overthrowing guys, though as the game went on
he definitely did. It was like he was just holding
onto the ball the easiest way to help him out.
(25:18):
It's like in your sport, get to the get to
the basket, get some freevieus gets out run the ball.
And sometimes Kevin O'Connell acts like, you know, he's played mad,
and then he throws it all the time. And that's
what they had done throughout the season and it works.
But in this specific game, it was clear you're getting
your guy's getting pressured. He doesn't look right, and Ankers
(25:40):
busted a big run. What's his name, Kieren william or
not Kieren Williams on the rams, but Aaron Jones I think,
had like a thirteen yard run. So they had a
couple explosive runs. But the moment on like first down,
he runs the ball and they gained one yard. He
was locked to throw it the next two plays and
mcveigh's guy, Chrishula was just all over him. So I listen,
(26:01):
everyone's gonna, you know, take a dump on Sam Narl
and I get it. He's an easy one. But I
thought Kevin O'Connell just refused to run the ball in
the first half when the game was still closed. Now
in the second got but I think, you know Lafloor's
Kyle's h you know, he's much more like McVeigh. But
McVeigh has these moments where he's like, last night, I'll
(26:23):
just be physical and we'll keep even a pass. The
game was relatively simple around the line of scrimmage. Let's
face that, Kevin O'Connell's got like some Philadelphia Andy Reid.
He wants to throw bumps and that got him in
trouble last night because his offensive line was getting warped
and his quarterback was kind of resorting back to uh
and I think a lot of guys resort back to this.
(26:45):
When you start getting hit, it really rattles you.
Speaker 2 (26:49):
Yeah, nobody likes to get.
Speaker 5 (26:51):
Hit the other Here's the other thing, Doug one conversation
is like, okay, let's just let's Sam walk or whatever.
Go to JJ. Kevin O'Connell, like we just discussed, is
a love to pass the ball. JJ McCarthy's college career
was defined by a guy who did not depend on
(27:11):
him passing the ball and running the ball and playing defense.
That is not how Kevin O'Connell likes to coach. So
you're going to bring this guy off an injury into
an offense that, let's face it, he wants to throw
at thirty five plus times a game and throw deep
down the field. So I think it's a pretty bold
move to just say, Okay, we'll go to JJ, which
I would say is definitely on the table now, and
(27:33):
think that it's going to be a seamless transition.
Speaker 1 (27:38):
Okay, what about what about Justin Herbert? There's a lot
of criticism of Herbert after his playoff performance. How valid
is that criticism? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (27:49):
To me, that's one that you just go, Okay, he
had a really bad game. Balls were flying on him.
The one that he overthrew McConkie wasn't even that close.
That's just a killer pass in a moment where it
just it just can't really happen. But you know, with
he didn't play well. But I thought Joe Walt was
kind of getting worked and in fareness, like he's going
(28:10):
up against Will Anderson, a high end top three pick,
and Danelle Hunter, who they gave a two year contract
to and literally guaranteed every penny at fifty million dollars total.
So it's like that's just that's a really really tough matchup.
The other thing with the Texans. You know, CJ. Stroud
looked awful as well, and then that moment that that
(28:31):
that snap, you know, he missed the snap and then
he made that crazy play. He kind of turned back
into last year's But it's not we acted. I bet
on the Texans in that game because I was like,
road playoff games are difficult, and the Chargers they do
have to win a lot of games, you know, nineteen
to seventeen to go on the road against the team
(28:53):
that if the quarterback just plays okay. They do have
a lot of high end down two pass rushers, single's
a stud. Mixings are really good player. Obviously Nico Collins, well,
I think of what the Chargers would do for Nico Collins.
And the other thing is, and this is where coaching
like this is the playoffs. Like McVeigh worked Kevin O'Connell,
which isn't that big of a deal. Mcvay's won eight
(29:13):
playoff games. He's kind of good at what he's doing.
He's probably gonna be a Hall of Famer one day.
And Demiko Ryans, you know, like the younger version of Rabel.
He's really good. So I think we act it. Listen,
he played bad. I'm not trying to make an excuse here,
but they lost to a team that the coaches viewed
really highly. The quarterback went the second overall, Like, they
(29:34):
lost to a team we didn't play well throughout the season,
but won a playoff game last year and won another
playoff game this year. It's not like some random little
engine that could No.
Speaker 2 (29:44):
No, I think it's a it's a great point like
c J.
Speaker 1 (29:46):
Stroud didn't have a particularly good year right for a
myriad of reasons, didn't have a particular year. Justin Herbert
I thought had an outstanding here all things considered, But
when they played ahead to head, Justin Herbert didn't play well.
CJ Sto played okay, and all the criticism on Justin
Harvers like okay, but the seventeen games, what do they buy?
Speaker 2 (30:05):
Okay? So where are you? Dan? Byron and I had
this discussion to start.
Speaker 1 (30:08):
To show how much do we value how you play
in the playoffs in a one game scenario versus how
you play in the regular season.
Speaker 4 (30:19):
Well, I think it.
Speaker 5 (30:19):
Gets the over reaction. And I'm guilty of this too,
because you know I was thinking about this. Let's face,
the wild card weekend was kind of boring, and you
can't escape a boring game because it's the only game
on television where when we turn on games on Sunday morning,
there are anywhere from what five to eight games going
at one time. So if you're having a bad game
(30:40):
or just playing in kind of a sleepy game, people
will change the channel and watch other games or have
the four blocks on and not focus on you, where
you kind of just get exposed in the sense of
and you know, the Chargers aren't the Chiefs or the
you know, the forty nine Ers or even the Jets
where it feels like they're on national television all the time,
at least this year. They will be next year. So
I think people just he's a polarizing player because he's
(31:04):
considered part of the Big five and the reality is
he's the fifth guy and he's not on the level
of the top four. And like, I will defend him
that if he was available relatives, do all the other
quarterbacks not named Burl, Allen, Mahomes and Lamar, Like I
promise you these gms and these coaches would would drive
(31:25):
their quarterback to Los Angeles to make that trade.

were the Dallas Cowboys, who would you hire?
Speaker 5 (31:37):
Yeah, good question. I think your options are kind of limited.
I mean that's why I think Dion like it's not fake,
like he's going I know, he puts out the statement yesterday,
but he's gonna be tucked like it's this isn't gonna die.
Mike Zimmers this guy too. I know I thought headline
today Zimmer might retire. But that's like one of his
like close friends, you know, coached him in the nineties
(31:59):
for the Cowboy So pretty easily transition to keeping this
defensive coordinator. I'm not the biggest Pat Schirmer guy, but
he has an NFL coordinator as though c so Boom.
You bring him down, I would imagine Kellen Moore will
be very much in the mix. I mean, that was
a big time Jerry guy, and it's kind of a
double whammy. Especially if the Eagles win again this week,
(32:19):
you kind of steal him back from your division rival.
But I think when you look at the names, it's
hard to think, like, yeah, I don't know Jerry's going
to do that. He's probably more likely, based on his history,
to just hire Kellen Moore than he would be Deon
Sanders or even Belichick. And listen, people can poo poo.
You know the reports, and I see Lombardy going back
(32:40):
with pro football talk, But I would say non game
day with Bill, his defining attribute as like a as
a coach was how ruthless and cutthroat he is. So
this notion that he's going to have this crazy, crazy
loyalty to North Carolina if he was like damn O
coach Cowboys. I mean, have you guys watched the last
(33:01):
twenty five years of his career. I mean you got
rid of Tom Brady, let alone countless other Pro Bowler,
star players, and you know, like his best friends in
the coaching business, he just cut off if he starts
hating you. So I would say everything is on the
table with Bill, even though I still have a hard
time seeing Jerry do that. But at a two years old,
I don't know if you saw the report. One thing
(33:22):
that bothered Jerry was kind of the Cowboys fans become
an apathetic with Mike McCarthy. That's where I think Dion
might might have some juice, and Belichick obviously would too.
Just give you a big, a big headline that right
or wrong. We know Jerry likes that.

I'm still gonna go with Lions three Bills to Chiefs one.
And you know my logic.

Is until somebody beats the Chiefs, I have to have
them won. Sure, you know, right, yes, like one team
beat him.
Speaker 1 (35:21):
I know they lost two games, but one team beat
him in the regular season, and Pat Mahomes reached the
at least the conference finals.
Speaker 2 (35:28):
Every game he's been a starter. Every year he's been
a starter.
Speaker 1 (35:30):
The defense is outstanding, and the offense hasn't been great
this year, but it doesn't seem to matter. They find
ways to win games, especially this time of year.
Speaker 3 (35:38):

Last night the Vikings were ousted from the postseason rank
the top three Minnesota teams you'd actually like to see
win a championship. Links excluded because they have won a
bunch in the WNBA, but not since twenty seventeen.

So I got the Wolves, I got the Twins, I
got the Gophers, golfers I have, and I got the
I have the Vikings, right anybody else?
Speaker 3 (36:06):
Wild? So you say wild? I did not say, Okay,
the Wild.
Speaker 2 (36:10):
I don't are they any good? I literally have no idea.
Speaker 6 (36:13):
Let's go to a hockey expert, Sam Iowa, Sam, no clue,
I don't know either. I'm looking right now. Minnesota Wild. Yeah,
they are pretty good.
Speaker 1 (36:24):
So but I'd like to see I mean, that would
be a big thing for Minnesota, but would be wiw
it would be it would be wild. Hey hey, uh,
I'd say Wolves three, Vikings two Twins one. Remember the
(36:46):
Twins would alway get to the playoffs and lose the Yankees.
It feels like every year that would happen and you
just feel bad. I mean, they did build an open
air stadium in Minnesota. I'm not really sure. I mean,
I know it's a great park in the summer, but
not really built. Not not really built with the idea that, hey,
we're going to be played late in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (37:03):
But I'll go Twins one.
Speaker 6 (37:04):
For those of us that can remember the Homer Hanky days,
that crowd was a home field advantage. Sure, so a
lot cheaper to build a stadium without a roof, can
totally get it. But to your point of a dome
and playing indoors, that did help Minnesota during their eighty
seven and ninety one championships. I was even gonna say
(37:27):
Gopher hockey, Gopher men's hockey with their championships, but they
haven't won it in like twenty years right into the
title game. Yeah, a year or two ago, but it's
been been a drought for the Gophers. There, all right, Doug,
rank the top threings, that top three things that happened
to you at age forty eight, because today is your
last day of forty eight.
Speaker 1 (37:47):
Wow, there you go, the top three things. I know
what number one is, Um.
Speaker 3 (37:58):
Did you have a couple of girls graduate high school?
