Speaker 2 (00:33):
Well welcome in. Danny Kanell is going to join us
later on this hour. I'm sure we'll have a good
chuckle at the fact that there's no SEC team in
the National Championship game. We'll get you ready for the
College Football Championship which is Monday. But we'll also talk
about this weekend in the NFL. And does he think
that Dion would be the right coach for the Cowboys
(00:55):
or a good coach in the NFL. He was a
starting quarterback in the NFL, so we'll ask him. But
it's start and this is really Jason Stewart's deal. He
wants to be the FMDJ, but he crafts it in
a unique way where we look back at a year
long gone something we called don't call it a throwback Thursday.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Don't call it a throwback th back Thursday.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
Thank you, Doug. I'll take it from here. Today we
focus on the year two thousand and one, very serious year,
but I did want to focus on some of the
fun stuff, the sports stuff, and the reason why I
came to two thousand and one. I thought, when was
the last time the Philadelphia Eagles and the Rams met
(01:47):
in the playoffs. At the end of the two thousand
and one season, the Rams were the greatest show on turf.
The Rams were a head coach of the head coach
of the Rams was Mike Martz. Head coach of the
Eagles was Andy Reid. Donovan McNabb against Kurt Warner. Kurt
Warner was the MVP of the season. The Rams would
(02:07):
beat the Eagles in the division game. They would go
on to meet the Patriots and the Super Bowl, and
we all know what happened in that game. I want
to say, Adam Vinteri hit a field goal. Patriots win
starts the dynasty for the Patriots. But that game that night,
Kurt Warner starred, Isaac Bruce, starred Marshall Folk, all the
(02:30):
usuals from those teams.
Speaker 5 (02:31):
I want to say, they're all Hall of famers.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
But just kind of look back at the two thousand
and one sports year, Dan, what sticks out to you?
Speaker 6 (02:40):
You know, it's funny you started the NFL and I
start in college football as we're just a few days
away from a national championship. Because I think two thousand
and one is the season where we feel the most
dominant team to ever play college football played college football,
and that would be the two thousand and one Miami Hurricanes.
(03:00):
To see Miami be as dominant as they were throughout
that season and dominating Nebraska in the championship game. Again,
that happened in two thousand and two, but that whole
season Miami was rolling. Nebraska was rolling as well, but
they lost late to Colorado. Miami's dominance. As we look back,
(03:21):
we talked about the Rose Bowl between Texas and USC
of being the greatest bowl game that we had ever seen.
I find very few people who would differ with me
in saying that that two thousand and one Miami team
may be the greatest that we've ever seen.
Speaker 5 (03:37):
Was that Ken Dorsey.
Speaker 6 (03:39):
Ken Dorsey was everyone.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Go through that roster. It's incredible, incredible.
Speaker 6 (03:47):
The Yeah, they beat Nebraska in the Rose Bowl thirty
seven to fourteen. They did have a scare at one
point against Virginia Tech. Starting lineup Ken Dorsey. Running backs
were Clinton Portis and naj Davenport. Tight End Jeremy Shockey.
Andre Johnson was a wide receiver, brought McKinney. The left
(04:08):
tackle Brett Romberg. Their center had uh just some yeah,
some great great names. Jonathan Vilma was a member of
that team. DJ Williams, at Reed, Sean Taylor. Yeah, some
great great players.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Okay, name what about what about the Super Bowl that year?
Now is the two thousand season, but the two thousand
and one Super Bowl was Ravens over the Giants. Right,
not the greatest quarterback matchup in the world, but it
was an unbelievable defense. When you talk about a remarkable defense,
(04:48):
Holy cow. The Baltimore Ravens completed a season they won sixteen,
they lose, did lose four games. Was Dion on that
team on the Ravens yeah, he was on that Ravens team.
Speaker 6 (05:04):
Right, No, yeah, I don't think so.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Okay, but of course they did have you know, just
dude after dude after dude. Even people forget Tiki Barbara
was on that team, the Giant but yeah, for the
for the Giants obviously, but Trent Dilfer being the starting
quarterback and their defense just completely dominated the Giants. That
(05:26):
defense is seen as right there with the eighty five Bears,
the two greatest defenses in the history the modern history
of football. Right, maybe do you put the Seahawks the
year the Seahawks won it right there? Those are the
three best.
Speaker 6 (05:42):
Of Yeah, I don't think the Seahawks is the greatest
of all time. I'd put the Bears in that Ravens
team up there. I mean, the Bear eighty five Bears
aren't number one, but yeah, I'd put the Ravens up there.
One other point with that, just because we we can.
That Miami football team. I found this stat. Seventeen players
from that one football team were drafted in the first
(06:03):
round of the NFL Draft. Wow, so it covered you know, years,
but there were four in two thousand and three, six
in two thousand and four. Yeah, then the couple in
five and six. He had five in the two thousand
and two draft. So oh, butch Davis guys huh yeah, yep, yeah,
majority outside of a few here and there.
Speaker 7 (06:23):
That Miami team was coached by Larry Koker though it was,
but Butch Davis players built it. Yeah, took the Browns job.
The thing about my just going back just quickly to
the college football discussion. Miami tapered off after that, and
so in Nebraska they you know, Frank Soulich, was he
the coach of that the team.
Speaker 6 (06:40):
That went to the national team.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
No, no, he took over. He took over and they
won nine games, but it wasn't enough.
Speaker 7 (06:45):
Nebraska, Yeah, and they've sort of been in college football limbo.
Speaker 6 (06:50):
We're in that national championship game.
Speaker 7 (06:52):
Yes, yeah, yeah, but you know that going back to
our last hour when we were doing teams, you give
a national championship too. I had Nebraska on the list
because their fans are just so desperate and hungry. For one,
it kind of shut them up, and you know, they
always go back to those great nineties teams. But anyway,
let's stay on top. It was the last Turrah, if
you will. Yeah, for Nebraska. Yeah, and Miami because they
(07:15):
went to a couple of BCS level games and the last.
Speaker 6 (07:17):
Year they were about to repeat until they were two
touchdown favorites over Ohio State in the Fiesta bo right, right, Yes,
they did make it to the champion hip. It was
to continue to that next year. With that two thousand
and one season, the year in golf, what a hero was.
Tiger completed the Tiger Slam that year by winning the Masters.
In two thousand and one, you had drama at Southern Hills.
(07:41):
Raretief Goosen ended up winning on a Monday playoff.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
But you take the water down the greens.
Speaker 6 (07:46):
Yeah, it was hot and Stuart's sink or.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
Was that shincock shincock shinnacock?
Speaker 6 (07:51):
They did, Yeah, But they also had later with Southern
Hills as well, and seven I believe in when Tiger
went there, it was really hot, but Ratief Goosen Stewart
sink and Goosen missed a short putt. Sink, mister short putt.
Goosen won in a playoff on Monday. But I remember
two thousand and one is the year that David Duval
(08:13):
finally broke through became number one player in the world,
winning the Open Championship, he wanted to talk about falling
off with Nebraska. Duval admitted at the time that he
had done everything that he could to try to be
number one in the world and to win that first major.
He talked about sticking to his diet and committing to
his game, sticking to his diet so much that he
(08:33):
wouldn't take an after dinner breath mint because he felt
that maybe it had sugar or something that would affect
his diet. Then when he won the Open Championship and
he was like, this is it. This is I've reached
number one and never reached those peaks again. But he's
been he's been open about it and talking about the
work that he had done to get to number one,
(08:54):
and he finally won the Open Championship that year, got
to number one in the world.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
And then yeah, sounds like he was on the Atkins diet,
which was the diet the fad of that time.
Speaker 5 (09:04):
If I don't recall that.
Speaker 6 (09:06):
Was the meat one right, was that it was like yeah, yeah.
Speaker 7 (09:09):
All proteins, cheese, bacon, and it's kind of come back
as like keto, I guess is now the modern version.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
It's all the same it's not really diet, it's just
don't eat man made carbs. It's basically what it is.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
Remember, the Lakers were in the middle of their three peat.
They beat the Sixers. Allen Iverson took the Sixers to
the finals. Larry Brown was the head coach. The Lakers
handed it to him. They're second of three in a
row with the Shaq and Kobe. Not much sticks out
from that. I'm trying to.
Speaker 6 (09:41):
Think, what can I say something to that because it
does directly affect me. Do you guys ever have like
a sports team that lost that It isn't like a
popular loss, but it's one that that stings. Maybe it
happened like in the second round of a playoffs. Do
you guys know what I'm talking about?
Speaker 8 (09:58):
Me?
Speaker 6 (09:59):
So, the Bucks in two thousand and one lost in
seven games to the Philadelphia seventy six Ers in the
Eastern Conference Finals. More has talked about the Lakers winning,
but that one Sixers team gets so much hype because
of Iverson that it feels like the Bucks loss is
twice as bad because since when did they ever hype
(10:20):
the loser of the NBA Finals in the season. But
there's a documentary made about that one Sixers team who
ended up beating the Bucks, and it's like, as a
Bucks fan, we should just take that loss and be
able to live silently with it. But for some reason,
that team lives in lore with Philadelphia and the seventy
six Ers and the NBA. I know of no other
(10:41):
team that's gotten the documentary about them losing an NBA Finals,
including the Sacramento Kings, or losing a conference finals including
the Sacramento Kings the next year, like that Sixers team
is revered. So it's kind of a sore spot with
me because they beat the Bucks in seven.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
Yeah, and it was a team that was made up
of great and then I Everson got to take whatever
shotty want.
Speaker 6 (11:02):
Yeah yep.
Speaker 5 (11:03):
Aaron McKee, right Temple.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
Aaron McKee, Eric Ceo, Ratliffe, Eric Snow Yeah. Great defensive team.
Speaker 6 (11:12):
Geygert was Mutumba on that team.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
Probably an amazing defensive team. Amazing defensive team. Two thousand
and one was the first Harry Potter movie, Right, Harry
Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
So two two like worldwide famous book series, became movies
in two thousand and one, and they were both monsters
Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings I Want to
Say was released the summer of two thousand and one.
Now two thousand and one, obviously is broken into two sections.
(11:53):
There's what happened up until nine to eleven, what happened after,
and the year that we're describing just sounds like so
much fun and it sounds like good times, including this
song that everybody remembers, which topped the Billboard charts. Yeah, now, Dan,
(12:15):
you strike me as a guy who would love hanging
on the moment by Life House, hanging by a moment
Life House, and.
Speaker 5 (12:21):
By the moment too. No, this is actually this.
Speaker 6 (12:25):
Is a banger. I didn't mind this song. I don't
think it's my favorite, but I probably wouldn't turn it
off if it was on the radio.
Speaker 4 (12:33):
I probably wouldn't look for another option. But it's actually
the best part of it, and I should have told
Sam this. The best part is the very beginning. It's
got a great bassline and it gets you kind of
worked up to the but don't Yeah anyways, Lifehouse, Doug,
you remember Life House?
Speaker 2 (12:53):
Wait, there's other movies you're not even Yes, I remember
Life House.
Speaker 5 (12:55):
Oh, please give me movies?
Speaker 2 (12:56):
Did you really realize Fast and Furious. The first Fast
and Furious was that your too?
Speaker 5 (13:00):
I did not.
Speaker 2 (13:02):
It was amazing year movies wise, Ka you had Fast
and Furious, you had Harry Potter, Sorcerer's Stone, Lord of
the Rings, as you point out the first one, and
Epic Ocean's eleven Training Day, Legally Blonde, Shrek, uh Zoolander, right, Bridgeland,
(13:26):
Bridget Bridget Jones Diary Jay stew You could go on
and on, you go on and on about that one.
Doug Zoolander came on Monsters Inc. Huh.
Speaker 6 (13:37):
I was just gonna say.
Speaker 7 (13:37):
Zoo Ladterer came out, I believe right after nine to eleven,
and it kind of floundered at the box office because
no one like wanted to laugh, no one, no one
was in a but Zoo Lander's one of the best
comedies Ben Stealer's ever been in, you know, maybe outside
of Meet the Parents. So it's a I love Zoolander,
but people just weren't in the mood to kind of
take in a silly movie about male models.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
Months Monsters Inc. Was that year Monsters Inc. Was You
want to talk about creative, creative movies from Pixar, What
a great one right, the idea of monsters living underneath
our bed and that there's an alternate universe like that's
actually a creative one where they where they they use
this scares as their energy and then listen, I don't
(14:22):
want to ruin this one for you, but they find
out at the end that laughter is more powerful than scares.
Who knew monsters inc? Is what a creative movie?
Speaker 5 (14:36):
Well, that's an impressive list of movies like.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
Otherre's others, Vanilla Sky, Rush Hour two, Pearl Harbor. Was
that that was? That was an epic. I thought that
was Yeah, yeah, yeah, Blackhawk.
Speaker 7 (14:54):
Down, Beautiful Mind. It's a good Russell Crowe movie. Yeah,
but yeah, love me some, Jennifer.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
I mean Denzel turning bad guy for it. I mean,
what a great turn of events in The Hawk.
Speaker 7 (15:11):
Yeah, great Denzel playing a bad guy American gangster and
like a bad guy you can root for in Frank
lucas an American gangster. And then of course in Trading Day,
He's He's fantastic, two of his best movies.
Speaker 5 (15:25):
I think playing a villain.
Speaker 2 (15:26):
Playing a villain. What about music there, Jaystoo.
Speaker 4 (15:31):
I just got Life House. I think Sam said that
Janet Jackson came out with one of her big songs.
Speaker 5 (15:36):
But I don't, I don't. I'm not a big I
don't know her cattalog All for You.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
Booty Delicious was big that Yearlicious Yeah Fallen by Alicia
Keys was the Billboard year end Hot one hundred at
number two. I keep on phone out Hello.
Speaker 7 (15:55):
Actually, Destiny's Child Independent Women Part one was there highest.
Booty Lish is a great because it's got the Stevie
Nicks riff in there.
Speaker 5 (16:04):
You know.
Speaker 6 (16:04):
Great song.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
Number one song in two thousand and one was hanging
by a moment as Jaystu put Train. I sat next
to lead singer Train on an airplane one time. He
had his own He had his own picture on his
cell phone like him performing. I don't know. I don't
know how I felt about that one interesting yeah, and
(16:33):
that is don't call it a throwback Thursday.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
Don't call it a throwback throw back Thursday. Fox Sports

It's the Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Mind of
the Doug Gottlieb Show broadcast from Tireck dot com Studios.
Let's welcome in Danny Canell get ready for the College
Football National Championship. Also discuss some of these potential coaching
moves in the Nation Football League and his reaction to
(17:16):
the Monday Morning quarterbacking over the quarterbacks last weekend. In
the NFL playoffs, Danny Canal joins US Florida State NFL
obviously covers sports in college football in the NFL for
a living. He joins US on behalf of bet Online.
Check out bet online for a plethora of college football
playoff final game and player lines plus opening odds for
(17:37):
the twenty twenty six college football Playoff. Danny, I was
thinking of you when I was watching the end of
the Notre Dame game, and I understand that James Franklin
has made a habit of losing the teams of equal
or greater talent, But I did walk away from that
game thinking, like, you're talking about a guy who doesn't
(17:58):
turn over as a quarterback making a huge turnover late
in a tie ballgame, Like, are we really going to
say that James Franklin's team losing to Notre Dame on
a kick when they're a bad field goal kicking team.
Is is some sign that he can't win the big game.
Speaker 9 (18:17):
No, but that's the reality. Like, that's the narrative and
the only way to change the narrative when you're one
in fifteen against top five opponents is to win one,
you know. Like, so I'm with you, Like I just think, like, so,
my question is what has really changed for Penn State
this season? Because they beat the teams they were supposed to,
they didn't beat the teams that they weren't. Like they
(18:39):
lost to Ohio State at home, and it was kind
of sim like they had a you know, first and
goal inside the five yard line, couldn't punch it in.
They beat Boise State and SMU both games they were
double digit favorites, and they had an opportunity to beat
Notre Dame and they didn't. You know, So I'll give
you a small example because I agree, Like he didn't
make the throw right and a lot of it. I
(19:01):
think Drew Aller played awful, and he can't. It's not
his fault. His quarterback played awful. But like in those
games when you are equally matched, like you have to
be the difference and what I saw was a team
at halftime that looked completely different in Notre Dame. And
then you go listen to Marcus Freeman's halftime message and
brand it's just a halftime speech, but when he tells
them histories written by conquerors, and we hold the pen,
(19:23):
and they come out the opening drive of halftime and
they drive it seven play drives, six of them were runs,
one pass, and they cram it right down the throat
of Penn State defense and that changes the whole complexion
of the game. They're like, all right, well, maybe maybe
maybe they were inspired by their coach the adjustments that
were made at halftime, because I thought at halftime Pen
(19:43):
State the game was over. I was like, Penn State's
got this thing in the bag, and then Notre Dame
clawed their way back in. It's unfair, but when you're,
you know, a coach making nine million, ten million bucks
a year, you're held to a standard. And I think
James Franklin's a great coach, and it's just like he
he hasn't been able to win the big ones. I
think it'll come, but I don't think it's like he
(20:04):
didn't do anything to change the narrative though, so I
think it is what it is.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
I do as well. What's changed, if anything, that's allowed
Notre Dame to get to this National champiship game, whereas
so many times in the past you get to this
higher level and Notre Dame comes up short.
Speaker 9 (20:23):
They are I think they're the most resilient team in
college football this year. I mean everybody's dealt with adversity,
but the amount of adversity. They lost their starting left
tackle and his backup before their first game of the
season against Techs A and M. Then they go on
the road and it's not pretty, it doesn't look good,
but they win. Then they've lost multiple players, they lost
their best secondary player earlier of the season. Doesn't phase them.
(20:46):
They lose to Northern Illinois and Riley Leonard throws two picks,
zero touchdowns, two picks, his worst game maybe is a
collegiate player, and it doesn't phase them. He's able to
bounce back and get better, and they improve all season long.
They're down at halftime in multiple games, down against Georgia,
down against Penn State, and they're able to rally back.
(21:06):
And I do think that stems from the head coaches
messaging which has been consistent all year long. They're tough,
they're physical, they're mentally tough as well. I mean, I
think that's probably the most important edge that they have
is they don't care what the score is. They don't
care who gets hurt, if it's a starting running back,
whether it's you know, whatever position is. They've been managing
(21:27):
to overcome it, and they will again in this game
against Ohio State, where once again they've got an offensive
line which has been pieced together due to injury. Again,
but they have a resiliency that's pretty rare to find
in today's athlete.
Speaker 2 (21:40):
I think Danny Canell joins us here on the Doug
Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. The final score also
not indicative of Texas and Ohio State. What went so
wrong for Texas? They get five plays starry at the
one yard line? What's what's so wrong?
Speaker 9 (22:00):
Something went wrong? When Caleb Caleb downs the safety for
Ohio State, like made one of the better plays. It's
going to get overshadowed because Jack Sawyer had the scoop
and score. But on you know, when they run the
toss on second and one, which I don't think it's
a horrible play call. I think we played the results.
I threw the toss to work done probably fifteen to
(22:22):
twenty times, and he, you know, ran at an end zone.
Whether it was a race to the pile on or
he cut it back. I don't think it's that bad
of a play call. I know some people were all
over Stark for that one. If Caleb Downs doesn't shoot
that gap, doesn't make that play. He read it right
from the get go. His speed and athleticism are off
the charts. If he doesn't make that play that quickly,
(22:42):
I think the ball at worst case would have gone
back to the one or two. And they did try
to run it right at Ohio State on first down
and got nothing. So I just think it was two
great teams, and I think sometimes you have to tip
your cat to the opponent, and I thought Ohio State
stepped up and made the plays when they had to
and tech't. And their defense has made a couple of
(23:02):
those goal line stands. I mentioned the Penn State game earlier.
Penn State had similar inside the five yard line first down.
Ohio State's defense came up big. They've done it time
and time again, and they've got great players. A lot
of them seniors who decided to come back. Jack Sawyer
came back for his last year jtt JT Twoel Malau
came back for another year to try to do something
(23:23):
like this. I think some of that veteran leadership was
on display in that moment, but I think it was
more about Ohio State making a play and Texas did not.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
Who who wins the national championship.
Speaker 9 (23:34):
I think Ohio State's going to win, But I do
think Notre Dame will make a game of it. I
really do, and I hope. I feel like I'm wishing
it in existence because I want to see a good game.
But I think they're built similar to Michigan, which we
saw Michigan beat Ohio State as a three touchdown underdog.
I think they've been given somewhat of a game plan
that Texas said, ben don't break, don't give up the
(23:54):
big play. Jeremiah Smith was held to one catch. But
here's the one thing I'm a little bit nervous for
Notre Dame. They like to play a ton of man coverage.
They play more man demand than anybody in the country.
If they do that, I would live bet Ohio State.
Like in the moment. If I see him doing that
predominantly on the first driver to I say they're in trouble.
But Al Golden is a very sharp defensive coordinator. I
(24:16):
think he'll pick his spots, and I think he'll make
sure that he keeps Ohio State's players in front of
him and forces them to be patient. And I think
Notre Dame's offense Riley Leonard, it's not pretty, but they're
kind of gritty, They're tough. I think they'll extend some
drives keep the ball away from them. So in a
lower scoring game, I think Notre Dame can cover, but
I do think Ohio State wins.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
Danny Kanal join us on behalf of bet Online. Last
thing a DK You've played obviously in the National Football League?
Does Dion Sanders style personality and desire and ability to
attract attention as a head coach? Does that work in
the NFL?
Speaker 9 (24:54):
Doug This might sound crazy, but I think the only
place that works is in Dallas with an owner that
of you know, likes a little bit of craziness, you know.
I think Jerry Jones is crazy enough to make this higher.
He's been a risk taker throughout his entire life. He
likes hiring big brands and behind the sunglasses, you know,
underneath the cloak and the bravado and everything that Deon likes.
(25:18):
I do think he's got an old school mentality for
the things that really matter, like the things about competing
and competing at practice and being tough. I think he
values those things, and he's already got connections with Mike
Zimmer's defensive coordinator. Dallas was in Colorado a year ago
as an analyst. He could bring Pat Shermer with him,
who is the offensive coordinator of Colorado, to Dallas, who
(25:40):
already has NFL experience, and then he could be the
role of culture setter, like tone setter that I do
think he again, I think he cares about the right
things and wants to win more than people think, so
I actually do think it could work in the NFL.
But maybe it might even be specific to Dallas, where
a place where his own owner kind of gets it
(26:01):
and buys in because Jerry likes a little flash, you know,
he likes that attention. I think it could be like
a marriage that actually works.
Speaker 2 (26:09):
Awesome stuff, DK, Dany, we really appreciate you join us
as Danny canell. Okay, and he's joining us. I've had
of a bet online. Bet Online has a plethora of
college Football Playoff final game and player lines, plus opening
odds for the twenty twenty six College Football Playoff. DK
You're the best man, Thanks for joining us.
Speaker 9 (26:26):
Awesome catching out, Doug. We'll talk to you later.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
Let's get to Dan Bayer. Get a quick update, dB.
Speaker 6 (26:30):
What he got, Doug. We start with the sad news
of the day that Hall of Famer Bob Uker passed
away at the age of ninety ninety former Major League
Baseball player, but most notably known for his work on
the microphone, whether it be sitting next to Johnny Carson,
starring in Mister Belvedere, starring in those Baylor like commercials,
or is Harry Doyle and Major League Bob Buker gone
(26:52):
at the age of ninety is the Brewers' longtime broadcaster.
In fact, was the lead broadcaster for the Brewers for
every season except one in the franchise's history in Milwaukee.
Baltimore Ravens wide receivers A Flowers missed another practice today
because of his knee injury. His status up in the
air for Sunday Night's matchup against the Buffalo Bills Saturday night.
(27:14):
Commanders and Lions will play in Detroit. Lions running back
David Montgomery is good to go as his corner terr
Arnold and the Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner limited in practice
today because of an ankle injury, but he is good
to go as the Commanders have taken him off of
the team's injury report. The Dallas Cowboys have requested to
speak with Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore about their head
(27:37):
coaching vacancy. Jets interviewed Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith for
their head coaching vacancy. Live Golf has struck a multi
year deal with Fox Sports to broadcast the Tours events
on their network channels. More than half of those events
will be appearing on either Fox Sports or FS one,
American Express and Palm Dezen. Justin Lawer right now leaning
(27:58):
at nine under par, Joel Damon and Chris Kirk in
a group at one shot back at eight under, And
it was just announced Dog within the last fifteen minutes
or so that the Genesis Invitational will not be held
next month at Riviera Country Club in the Pacific Palisades
because of the wildfires that devastated that community. An alternative
(28:19):
location for the February tournament has yet to be determined,
but it will not be played at Riviera.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
Back to you, No, it's Doug Gotlib Show here on
Fox Sports Radio, coming to you from the ti raq
dot com studio. So happy birthday to Dan Bayer. What's
the plans night, Dan, the Lisa taking out to dinner?
Dinner at home?
Speaker 6 (28:41):
Yes, No, so last night Lisa and Brody teamed up
and making me a cake that we'll have tonight. But
we will go after work to grab some dinner and
as I told Jim, off tomorrow so I'm gonna try
to try to enjoy it then. But yeah, just grabbing
some dinner tonight, that's the plan.
Speaker 2 (29:00):
Went to dinner last night Milwaukee was her friends. Then
went to the LA game, right, I mean, have you
been a viser for him?
Speaker 6 (29:06):
No?
Speaker 5 (29:07):
Not yet?
Speaker 2 (29:07):
Oh my gosh. That I mean it is nice. By
the way, a mutual friend who used to work with
Craig Carmerzon was there, spent some time with him, and
he made sure that made sure he could not be
more effuse in his praise of you and your old
school work ethic Back when you were at the University
of Wisconsin.
Speaker 6 (29:26):
Oh, that's very nice him. Yeah, I.
Speaker 2 (29:31):
Mean, I think the direct quote was he was one
of the two dorks that didn't go out and all
they did was watch and study sports. But it made
for an amazing, amazingly well rounded broadcaster.
Speaker 6 (29:43):
That was actually would be the other dork.
Speaker 2 (29:46):
Yes, yes, he said, you and Evan Cohen.
Speaker 6 (29:49):
I'm a couple years older than Evan though, but but yeah.
Speaker 2 (29:53):
But that that was actually he said, he and Madvion Collen,
two dorks, had never did anything except love sports, and
that's why he knows everything about sports. Anyway, Happy birthday
to you, Daniel. It was really cool and again, like
I'm up, it was. It was a busman's holiday, right.
You're coaching basketball, you have practice, you got you know,
you got three games coming up, You go to an
NBA game and one. Yeah, you come away with some ideas,
(30:16):
you come away with some I actually coached Jamal Moseley
that's in AAU basketball when I was still in college
playing and helped my dad out. That was that was
interesting to watch them coach the magic. They just didn't
have it last night. Could make a shot and Milwaukee
Damil was incredible, incredible. I just continue to think I
watched the NBA games. I watched the NBA my whole life,
(30:39):
and I'm telling you, do they shoot a couple too
many threes? Like yeah, But for as much as that
may look on a highlight like oh here they're doing
all they're doing shooting threes, if we go back to
watch the nineties and early two thousands, you'd have these senseless,
terrible post ups as well, you know, or back a
guy down, remember they caught they caught barklay and a guy,
(31:01):
or it was the Mark Jackson rule where you'd get
the ball and you just back a guy down from
like mid court. Like that's not fun to watch either.
So I watched, and I was highly entertained. And I'm
a pretty discerning critic for basketball. So I don't think
that all of this discussion, all this pilaveror over the
(31:21):
shot selection, or I heard Colin talk about guys people
want power basketball, Like, no, they don't. When Karl Malone
was the MVP, people hated watching Karl Malone plays the
MVP hated it. I just think it's the proliferation of
NBA basketball on TV that's what killed the numbers for
college basketball. That's what kills the number for the NBA.
Speaker 3 (31:43):

Speaker 6 (33:00):
One of the things when I moved from Wisconsin out
to California was I wanted to take some of my
work that I had done on the radio then, and
I was working part time here at Fox Sports Radio
and didn't know what I would need, and I wanted
at my demo tape. So I had someone burn CDs
for me. Remember that, sure, and back at the old
(33:22):
station before I was leaving town, I asked my buddy,
I said, can you please burn Bob Uker's Hall of
Fame speech on a blank disc for me?
Speaker 2 (33:32):
So good?
Speaker 6 (33:32):
So Bob Uker was ensured to do the Baseball Hall
of Fame. The news today is that Uker passed away
at the age of ninety. We have two minutes of
Bob Buker's Hall of Fame speech. Just want to play
so we can enjoy the legend who left us earlier today.
This from Cooperstown in two thousand and three.
Speaker 8 (33:51):
I still, and this is not sour grapes by any means,
still think I should have gone in as a player.
Thank you, Thank you very much, all those boys.
Speaker 6 (34:09):
The proof is in the pudding.
Speaker 8 (34:13):
This conglomeration of greats that are here today, a lot
of them were teammates, but they won't admit.
Speaker 6 (34:20):
It, but they were.
Speaker 8 (34:23):
They are wonderful friends and always will be. And the
nineteen sixty four World's Championship team with great Lou Brock,
and I remember as we got down near World Series time,
Bing Divine, who was the Cardinals general manager at that time,
asked me if I would do him and the Cardinals
(34:44):
in general of favor, and I said I would. And
he said, we'd like to inject you with hepatitis. We
need to bring an infielder up. And I said, will
I be able to sit on the bench. He said yes,
We'll build a plastic cuba for you because it is
an infectious disease. And I've got it. I've got to
(35:06):
tell you this. I have a photo at home. I
turned a beautiful color yellow and with that Cardinal white uniform.
Speaker 5 (35:14):
I was knocked out. It was beautiful.
Speaker 6 (35:16):
One had Lou.
Speaker 4 (35:17):
It was great.
Speaker 8 (35:18):
Of course, any championship involves a World Series. The ring,
the ceremony the following season in Saint Louis at Old
Bush Stadium, and we were standing along the sideline. I
was in the bullpen, warming up the pitcher, and when
they call my name for the ring. It's something that
you never ever forget. And when they threw it out
(35:38):
in the left field, I found it in the fifth inning,
I think it was.
Speaker 4 (35:45):
It wasn't.
Speaker 8 (35:45):
Yeah, and once once I spotted it in the grass man,
I was on it.
Speaker 5 (35:50):
I mean it was.
Speaker 6 (35:51):
It was unbelievable. Oh, it's nineteen minutes of just Bob
Buker being Bob Buker, and it's so great. Just wanted
to share a little of what I think is one
of the greatest speeches that we've ever seen at the
Hall of Fame.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
Also, you know, here's the other thing, right, and granted
it's self deprecating, but offensive to exactly zero people. You
can be delightful and funny and you don't always have
to be offensive, right, It's like that. It's really amazing.
Speaker 6 (36:20):
It's yeh rip to Bob, Youyuker. All right, let's get
to the other headlines. Kellen Moore, Eagles offensive coordinator. Well,
the Cowboys have asked Philadelphia for permission to speak with
more about their head coaching vacancy.
Speaker 2 (36:35):
Yeah. I like there's a lot of people who think
he's their next chasing Jason Garrett. They've been grooming him
for this. Wouldn't it be amazing if that ends up
being the decision that's made. Whereas Deon Sanders, a former Cowboys,
won a lot more but in the college ranks, and
you know a lot of people now questioning Kellen Moore's
(36:58):
play calling in Philadelphi is that the reason their passing
game has n't in that good.
Speaker 6 (37:03):
You reported we played the audio earlier. NFL insaid, are
ed Warders speaking on the Dan Patrick Show, so that
Colorado coach Dan Sanders, Yeah, would almost certainly accept the
head coaching job with the Cowboys if it was offered
to him by Jerry Jones. Word are tweeting as much
as well.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
Yeah. The only problem with that is it does put
the pressure scarely on Jerry Jones if people want Dion
to be the coach. Just the problem with de onbeing
the coaches. He's made it pretty clear he wants to
coach Shad or Sanders, and I don't know how that works.
It doesn't work with the contract that they just gave
to Dak Prescott Vikings.
Speaker 6 (37:34):
Gim Quizia Delpha Mensa declined to offer any detail on
the team's future plans with quarterbacks. Sam Darnold, who can
be a free agent this offseason.
Speaker 2 (37:42):
It's a hard one, right why show your cards. I'm
sure they'll make him an offer. The question is how
close is it to the top offers he'll get elsewhere,
And that just tells you how much they want him back.
Speaker 6 (37:53):
One other vikings note Kevin O'Connell's future with the team.
He has a one year left on his contract. Well,
he said he'd like to sign a contract extension with
the team. Of course. Jay Glazier ruffled some feathers with
the report that teams were looking to trade for Kevin O'Connell.
Making that report in the week eighteen.
Speaker 2 (38:11):
Yeah, that one feels like trying to create some momentum
towards him getting a new deal. I would guess he'll
get a new deal. He's done a pretty good job.
Speaker 6 (38:19):
David Montgomery's going to be back for the Lions. Bobby
Wagner good to go for the Commanders on Saturday night,
But on Sunday Ravens Wide receivers. A Flower status still
up in the air. Missed another practice because of a
knee injury.
Speaker 2 (38:30):
Yeah, they're gonna need all the help they can get.
And Jay Flowers as a difference maker for that Ravens team.
Speaker 6 (38:35):
And that's the press that get out there and pressed.
Speaker 5 (38:38):
That was the press.
Speaker 2 (38:40):
Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday
to here, Dan, Happy birthday to you. I see, I
didn't think it was that bad and that uncomfortable. Jase too,
although happy word to you and Jay Su does rhyme,
you just say kind of quickly, all right. Dell of
the podcast is Doug Gottlip Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 8 (38:57):
I don't worry nobody's listening anyway.
