All right, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Heres in
the Bonus with Doug.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Gott Doug Gottlieb Show, in the Bonus, Fox Sports Radio,
I Heart Radio app. Welcome, Welcome, Welcome, Michael, Welcome, Welcome in.
So Luca had his press conference today, and I thought
it was interesting, really interesting. Here's a statement to make.
(00:31):
I think Luca is about as good as player as
I've ever seen. He's really good. You know, he's obviously
he got some modern day bird to him. You're like, oh,
why he's he gotta be a white guy. Well, because
he's a step slow. And yet he gets by people
like Larry Bird, bigger than you think, like Larry Bird,
(00:53):
better rebounder than you think. Bird was a better defensive player,
whereas Luca doesn't seem, for the most part, to play defense.
In Dallas had to build their whole defensive scheme around him,
sort of being in front, getting beat, protecting the rim
with Gaffer and Lively. But I will say this, Okay,
(01:13):
there's two things. The thing that has caught people off
guard is that we didn't have insiders. We didn't have insight.
Even Luca didn't know was coming. That's a huge thing.
Even Luca didn't know it was coming, and I thought, man,
that's crazy. And then you started to think, well, that's
(01:34):
how it used to be. This is a throwback trade.
This is not one where he demanded out and didn't
want to be there. He was fine. I'm sure he
was a paying the ass. I'm sure his people were
paying the ass. I'm sure they were sort of demanding
and they were standoffish that things that were demanded of them.
(01:54):
But the first thing that comes to my mind in
this trade is how old school it is on how
like you don't have to tell guys that they're that
they're going to be traded, or they're even on the
trade blocks, or that you're calling calling people. You just don't,
(02:16):
you don't. And then the second part to it, and
so whereas so many other trades are forced by the agent,
forced by the player, and leaked by insiders. And I
mean again, even look at Dearon Fox who was traded
to the San Antonio Spurs. He demanded a trade, they
(02:36):
acquiesced and traded him. That's how it usually works in
the NBA. So we act like it actually kind of
pisses you off when players actly, wow, you could be
traded at moments notice. For the most part, they're not.
For the most part, it's the players who are demanding
a trade, and then the team waves the white flag
and does the best they can. Whereas this was quite
(02:58):
the opposite, quite the opposite. The other part to it
is if it works for the Mavericks. If it works
for the Mavericks, then Nico Harrison deserves all the credit.
No one else has stepped up and said I wanted
this to happen. Nobody, so in the we need somebody
(03:23):
to receive the proper amount of acclaim. Jason Kidd didn't
say I wanted this to happen. Ownership didn't say I
wanted this to happen. Other players didn't say I wanted
this to happen. I do think that Jason Kidd is
probably a lot easier to coach a guy who likes
to play both ends. I'm sure there's a lot to
(03:43):
Anthony Davis that is a really good thing, but he
hasn't uttered as much and Nico Harrison's taking complete ownership.
So if this does in fact work, Nico Harrison deserves
all the credit in the world, all the credit in
the world because he made it all happen, and I
do think there's a world in which Luca can still
have a great career, which he most assuredly will, and
(04:06):
it still works for Dallas. Doesn't mean they have to
get to the Western Conference finals, no, but if they're
competitive for several years to come at the top of
the Western Conference, then there's no reason to believe that
it was a bad trade. Even if Luca is a
great player. The Lakers have to rebuild. This is a
punt on the season. Austin Reeves, Lebron, James, Luka, Doncik.
(04:29):
Three fantastic offensive players, three tragically bad defensive players that
doesn't work in the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Let's get to what the Fox set and now every
day at this time with The Doug Gottlieb Show. In
the Bonus podcast we Play for You. At portion of
a previous show on Fox Sports Trader Fox Sports One,
here's Rob Parker talking about Luca.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
Luca was dumped by the Mavericks, Like you can look
at the oh they just wanted defense, you know, with
ad and all that. No, no, no, they looked at
their situation and said, we gotta pay this guy three
hundred and fifty million dollars this summer. Right, he's a
top three or four player in the NBA. He just
(05:25):
took your franchise to the NBA Finals eight months ago,
not four years ago. Eight months ago. We get it,
he's hurt. He hasn't been playing since Christmas. I get
all that, but you know what he does when he
gets on the court. And they said thanks, but no thanks,
And they did it in the cloak of night.
Speaker 4 (05:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Yeah, no, I mean like I love Rob, I mean
as a guy. He's a sweetheart of a guy, and
he's not wrong for anything he said. But there's a
lot more to it than that they just dumped him.
It's they have this incredible asset now. They also didn't
make it uncomfortable or make it a scene, and they
quickly got it done because had you said, hey, we're
(06:12):
thinking about moving Luca, then the season becomes for a
couple of you know, a couple of days or even
a couple of weeks, becomes a tragic disaster. Right, you
can't It's really hard to play when that's all anybody
cares about. So look, I think they did it right
by getting it done quickly and quietly and easily. But
(06:33):
there's more to it than they just dumped him. It's like, well,
do you want it's the old like do you want
Luka Donci? Of course? Do you want it for three
hundred and fifty million dollars? You know, four years whatever guaranteed?
Like yeah, I was he gonna lose weight? Well, he
didn't have to do anything. Is he gonna be coachable?
And is he gonna play defense? Eh? Right, So without
(06:55):
those guarantees, and you can cut off the chance of
paying anybody els three hundred fifty million dollars Like, it's
just not it's it's never as simple as well, we
didn't want him anymore. We love Luca, but we didn't
want him at seventy million dollars a year when you
can't cut him and there's no reason for him to
get in shape and play defense. Here's Dan Patrick talking
(07:17):
about Drake.
Speaker 5 (07:19):
Is it a stretch to say the Kansas City Chiefs
are Drake.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
Current, Drake Drake May, Drake, Drake.
Speaker 5 (07:27):
The musician, the artist that all of a sudden everybody
turned on Drake here. I don't know if that makes
the Eagles Kendrick Lamar, but you know, when you think
about it, the Chiefs came along and got rid of
the Patriots. That's what people wanted, Like, can somebody get
rid of them? Thank God? Oh Mahomes he's awesome, and
(07:47):
Tyreek Hill and Kelsey this is great.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
Andy Reid won a Super Bowl.
Speaker 5 (07:52):
Now all of a sudden, it's like, uh, can somebody
knock these guys off? And it feels like, wasn't Drake
at the top of his game? He came from nowhere,
rapper from Canada and like, oh this guy, man, this
is great, and then all of a sudden the world
turned on him.
Speaker 6 (08:09):
And it's but yeah, because Drake is still like the
most streamed artist every year, you know, so people are
listening to his Song's a ton and at the same
time people kind of hate him.
Speaker 5 (08:20):
Well, the Grammy reaction to Kendrick Lamar winning and everybody
singing that song that has to do with Drake is
really kind of mind blowing.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
Yeah, no, I mean, people are over Drake, but that's
kind of It's a good point of what that Dan
is making is for every reason. Now we view sports teams, stars, whatever,
as having been played out, and no matter how good
they are, we seem to emotionally want to move on
(08:52):
from people, even when there's no reason to have to
move on for them. Here's Raddy Quinn talking about Mark
Murphy's comments that the tush push should be banned.
Speaker 7 (09:00):
The hard thing about this is, obviously, from a formation standpoint,
the way they Philly in particular lines up is legal,
but the play in and of itself doesn't look like
anything else that we see in the game of football.
And on top of that, we did, if you're just
taking saying from a true competition standpoint, we did change
(09:20):
the field goal or the point after attempt excuse me,
the point after attempt and moving it back because we
thought that was a non competitive play. Kickers were making
it a too high of clips, so it was just
kind of like a h.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Hume play.
Speaker 7 (09:32):
Okay, on fourth and one, look at the stats. It's
not just Filly, it's every single team. Look at the
stats on fourth and one, the conversion rate when they
use that specific play, and so I look at that
and I go, if it's a non competitive play in
over seventy or seventy five percent on fourth and one.
There's a conversion rate. You've got to look at it
from a competitive standpoint, and then if you look at
it from a player safety standpoint, you just can't tell
(09:54):
me the way that play is ran on either side
of the ball, especially with what Washington was doing, that
this is a safe play.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
So in other words, Brady agrees with Mark Murphy and
then adds to it and says, it's not even a
safe play, let alone a play that's real football that
can be stopped. There is a certain rugby element to it,
and I know that football comes, you know, from a
rugby background. But I also will tell you that Mark Murphy,
who's a friend, offers nothing in terms of ill spirit.
(10:25):
It's just something that he views and how it's viewed
in the league. And there's no like, well, we lost
to them, so we don't like the play sort of thing,
although they did lose in the week first week at
the season. That's what the Fox says does say.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Let's find out, who are what is annoying Jason Stewart.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
And now it's your annoying, Jay Doug.
Speaker 8 (11:08):
I want to pick up on what Dan Patrick was
saying about Drake and the Chiefs and people being over
it and stuff. Tom Brady on his Let's Go podcast
address this very topic.
Speaker 4 (11:21):
Well, I'm broadcasting the game, so I don't really have
a rooting interest per se. The one thing I root
for in these situations are great games. I will say
if the Chiefs win, I will be very happy for them.
I mean, what they've achieved is unmatched, and I think
that's cool because people always hated on us for so
(11:41):
many years and I didn't understand it because all I
did was, like, we try to do things the right way.
We try to go out there and compete for our
job and win. And like, there's an excellence that I
appreciate about people who are doing other things at really
high levels because you understand the commitment that it takes
for them to do what they're doing, and like to
be in this country and to not cheer for excellence
(12:06):
is beyond me.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
Like, I think.
Speaker 4 (12:07):
It's it's incredible to see this team withstand all the
adversities they faced over the course of not just this
season or last season the year before. They just plowed on.
Nothing's that distracted them. They've just continued to push forward
and win a lot of games. And you know it's
going to be a terrific game because there's a lot
(12:28):
on the line for both teams.
Speaker 8 (12:30):
Okay, so amen, I've been telling people, and Sam is
my witness off air on this podcast and on the
airth before the season started, the biggest storyline for me
is the Chiefs three peding and this is the reason
why and Brady touched upon this. If you cover this
sport or you've been in sports, I've been in this
business since the mid nineties, we have a chance to
(12:53):
see something and be a part of something. You know,
we will kind of be covering this this three pete.
We have a chance to see something that's never been
done in the history of the sport. Like why would
we not all be on board with that? Who cover it?
I'm saying, I see a lot of naysayers like j
Max just today, it's like, I'm not a fan of
(13:14):
this particular dynasty. I'm kind of over it, you know,
And it's like, what kind of over what this is?
This will be the first time anyone ever does it.
How could you not be rooting for that as a
content creator.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Well, because he's also a product of the Internet and
of the twitter sphere, and the Twitter sphear hates everything.
That'd be that'd be my pushback. I agree with you.
I agree with you, like you marvel at things that
are when you're when you're in it or when you're
covering it, you marvel. I think the ability to be consistent,
knowing how hard it is just to get there, let
alone to sustain it is is definitely something that I
(13:52):
think most people champion. But again, like I honestly think
that that a good portion of the people Jason who
hate on the Chiefs, hate on championship teams, hate on
successful people. I just think they're projecting their own insecurities, inabilities,
(14:15):
or maybe their own short fail their own failings of
their own team. I just think that's what it is
only possible explanation for me. Who else is taking you off?
Speaker 8 (14:25):
So I just read this, and maybe you caught it yesterday.
I didn't catch this. So the NFL, in one breath
said that they're ramping up the social injustice messaging on
their on their product on uh. I don't know their
uniforms or whatever on their helmets, but they are not.
(14:46):
They're taking out the end racism in one of the
end zones and for the Super Bowl Halleujah? Is that
the word halleujah? Out of all the woke stuff that's
happened over the last five years. And again I'm gonna
go on record as saying this, the thing that disturbs
me or I hate most about woke is that it's
(15:08):
based in disingenuine people, disingenuine thoughts. I don't think people
believe half of the shit that they are talking about.
And this n racism might be the peak of the
whole thing, was it PFT commentator who had that viral
meme about I was, I was a wild racist until
I saw this message in the end zone and then
(15:31):
I stopped being a racist. Yes, this one for whatever reason,
like they're going to replace it with something like, uh,
you know, let's all let's let's all have love or
something like crazy like that. And it's for whatever reason,
this n racism thing disturbed me or disrupted my sensibilities
(15:53):
the most. So good for the NFL for taking that down,
taking it off the end zones. I don't know why
they did it, but thank god they did.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
Yeah, it was a weird one. We're gonna look back
at the last five years to say, man, that was
a weird time. We'd time. I've never understood that, and
I'm not you know me, I'm not a racist. I
have no time for racism. I've said before that if
I was running for the president United States and some
racist group want to spport me, I would say, hey,
(16:24):
I don't want your support. I don't need your support.
If I need your support to win, then I shouldn't
have won. That's how I would handle it. But I
also don't think we need end racism in the end zone.
That doesn't really change. No, there's no racists who go like,
oh it says end racism. I'm stopping now. And I
credit PFT commentator for coming up with the perfect tweet.
Speaker 8 (16:43):
One thing Goodell did not address yesterday. He addressed a
social injustice and I wrote this down. I did some
homework and I read the transcript. I'm going to tell
you the things that Roger Goodell was asked. You know,
they open it up. He doesn't make himself available, so
when he does, I'm interested in what the topics are?
(17:04):
What do people spend their time asking the commissioner about?
Here we go m chief's favoritism, roughing the passer, replay assistance,
optical tracking, eighteen game schedule, diversity, equity and inclusion, flopping
sexual harassment. In the wake of the Justin Tucker thing,
(17:25):
one thing that was not asked by anybody was, mister Goodell,
everyone in this room will agree that the quality of
your product is getting worse. Are you, at the very
least in the back rooms trying to address the quality
(17:45):
of play?
Speaker 2 (17:46):
Or can I help you with? How you asked that question?
Speaker 8 (17:49):
Has the gambling and the fantasy interest that drives most
of your viewers and it's paying all of you guys off.
Is that just enough?
Speaker 5 (18:02):
Now?
Speaker 2 (18:02):
I think what you say is you start by Commission Goodell,
what do you how would you assess the quality of
play throughout the regular season? And if he says anything
just strictly positive? Uh, I have to find a way
to ask it in a different way. When you say
(18:23):
you know something along the lines of how would you
or why would you say that the play is so good?
When so many analysts pundits believe that the play was
(18:44):
it was sloppy?
Speaker 5 (18:46):
Right?
Speaker 2 (18:46):
These are not yes no questions, So you take them
down the path and then if he says if you
refuse to say that the play could be better, then
you say how would you address it?
Speaker 3 (18:56):
You know?
Speaker 2 (18:57):
Or you could just say how would you address the
quality of play issues in the other felt But the
problem with that is you would say what quality play issues?
Speaker 3 (19:03):
You know?
Speaker 8 (19:04):
Yeah, and if if you were given a bunch of
follow ups, I think the This is what I really
just want to have. I want to have somebody on
record as state in this, you know, in like a
criminal trial or something like a lawyer will say something
to the witness knowing it'll be struck, but he knows
that it makes an impact on the jury. I just
(19:24):
want a report her to be like. So, basically, what
you're saying is that the people that have gambling interest
in your sport and fantasy interest in your sport aren't
really watching it as a quality of play thing. They're
just rooting for their bet to come in or their player,
so they largely ignore the quality of play. But for
people that don't have that interest, and they're just sitting
in their living rooms and they want to change the
(19:46):
channel because it's no longer as entertaining as it used
to be. Is there anything you could say to those people?
Speaker 2 (19:55):
You know? I think obviously it's a challenging landscape where
we have less time to practice and more games we've
ever had, But it's definitely something we need to work
towards and ask both players and front office people how
we get that quality play.
Speaker 8 (20:08):
Up boom so end racism as a as a banner
the people against greatness and no question for goodell about
the quality of play.
Speaker 2 (20:22):
I think the people against against greatness are just an.
Speaker 1 (20:31):
Why are we doing these? Are because we can?
Speaker 8 (20:39):
To be honest, I don't even know what Gilbert's talking
about here, Gilbert Arenas with another nonsensical cuss Layden rant
right now.
Speaker 9 (20:48):
Who's the top five shooting guards in the NBA's history.
There's two people who haven't won no motherfucking championship, And
in front of Klay Thompson, for damn sure, Clay got
four of them as the second option, Alan Ivers is
in front of him, and motherfucking James Hardens in front
of him. MVPs, you stand on your own motherfucking merit first, Yes,
(21:10):
before team A.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
Yeah, that's why Gilbert was so hard to play with
because he was talking about his own merit. So, you know,
there's lots of different ways to win basketball games. You
do need an alpha at the end of the day
to take and make the biggest of shots the biggest
to places. But there's lots of ways to win basketball games.
(21:35):
My team just got to figure out one of them.
That's what the Fox said and why we play that
for you because we can. That's it for the end
the Bonus Podcast. Check out the radio show every day
three to five Eastern twelve two specific Fox Sports Tradio.
I Heart radiop I'm Doug Gottlieb.
