be a special thanks to the folks at view Sonic
who once again have adorned our stage. I don't even
(00:44):
know what adorn means, but I do think I used
it correctly in the sentence. I looked it up beforehand
with all these monitors, so we look super cool right
in the heart of media date which Dan Byer alongside
as he has been since I joined Fox eight years ago.
And I would say, Dan, call me crazy. Media Day
(01:09):
feels back, I mean not Media Radio Row feels back.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Agreed.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Largest footprint that I have seen of space used by
everybody at this Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Biggest spot.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
We've been in tight spots, people have been turned away,
They've accommodated everybody here in New Orleans, and it absolutely shows.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Yeah, And it's one of these things that the first
the first post COVID one was LA, or no was
somewhere before LA because LA was two years ago.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
It was so they had it one in Tampa, but
they didn't go to That was twenty one, and then
in twenty two it was in Los Angeles.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Twenty two is LA. Twenty three was who well, where's
twenty three? Twenty four Vegas, Arizona? Right, and we like here,
here's our work. Usually we're here Monday through Friday. And
to those of our crew, I've been here since Sunday night.
You guys are awesome, thank you very much. But it's
really Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. Those are tough days, right, because
(02:11):
you're it's like going to a party and arriving before
the actual time of the party, knowing everybody shows up,
you know, at seven forty five or seven o'clock party.
It's like showing up at six thirty and the wife
still got her hair and curlers, and the dad just
got home from the golf course and you're like, uh, sorry,
you need help, and're like, yeah, you can throw that
in the oven. You could do this, you can help
(02:32):
clean up. You know. The babysitter hasn't got the kids yet.
It's super super awkward to be here on a Monday,
but generally it builds, and Thursday and Fridays are great days.
Wednesday is usually still pretty tame. And I've this is
my twenty thirteen, So this is my I don't know,
it's twelve or thirteenth outside of Tampa, so I've made twelve.
(02:54):
At the last thirteen Super Bowls, and post COVID, it
felt like it felt like Radio Row would not be back,
you know, it just did. It felt like there wasn't
a level of investment from a lot of the corporate sponsors.
And now we look out and there's a ton of
current former NFL players, a ton of celebrities. There's people everywhere,
(03:16):
and the big sponsors are back as well. So this
should be a really really fun couple of days in
the Creston City. I also will break out that if
for any reason my pattern speeches off, it's because I
made the ill fated decision of having a plate of
crawfish mudbugs as some might call it, right before we
(03:37):
went on air, and I did. I love Cajun spice
and seasoning, but I'm not sure. I'm not sure it
was the right decision before we went on air.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
You down those pretty quick too as well, because I
saw the people walking around with them, and there's absolutely
every reason why you should have done that.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
So don't feel bad if you have to take a pause.
That's what I'm here.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
For, all right, good, real quick. Want to get some business,
and then I want to talk about what I think
is going to be the story of the week before
we get to the story of the weekend. Our set
here in New Orleans stands out as the best set
at NFL Media Center. Why because it's decked out with
view Sonic monitors. View Sonic a leading provider of visual
solutions for education, work, and entertainment. Visit ViewSonic dot com
(04:20):
and see the difference. Okay, so the week started with
Luka Doncik being traded to the LA Lakers, and last
night Luca was on the bench as the Lakers dominated
the Clippers. And there's probably a whole other side, maybe
podcast or on any other week's show on the Clippers
(04:43):
finally have their arena. The Clippers have their arena in Inglewood,
which used to be Inglewood is City of Champions right,
It's the former home of the LA Lakers. This is
finally their chance. Kawhi Leonard is back, is healthy, James
Harden is having a rebirth this season, and James Harden
was awful last night. The Clippers completely no showed and
against the Laker team that trade away Anthony Davis does
(05:06):
have Luka Doncik. The game wasn't even close. Even Bronnie
got in and hit a shot last night. What a
disaster for the LA Clippers. But I I need to
push that aside, not even talking about Luca, because the
story I believe of the week is going to be.
I think Kevin Durant's gonna get moved. I think Kevin
(05:27):
Durant is going to go back to the Warriors. I
think it's pretty awesome. I do because I'm a bit
of a Kevin Durant sympathizer. You know me, Dan, We've
worked together long enough that I have this this I've
had this space in my heart for Aaron Rodgers, and
it's kind of my my that space is kind of
(05:48):
sort of crept up and sort of gone away because
Aaron has turned me against everybody's sort of thing. And yeah,
I think he missed his window. Kevin Durant, I believe,
I truly believe. I understand how it looks when you're
down up three games to one, you lose to the Warriors,
and then you go and join the Warriors. It feels icky,
(06:08):
but the reality of it is. And I went to
one of those NBA Finals games that when they took
on the Cavaliers, Hey essentially equal teams if you truly
look at if you don't have a bias towards Kevin
Durant or Lebron James, and I would admit that Lebron
James overall a better basketball player, but in the context
(06:31):
of that series, I think it settled it. At that
point in time, Kevin rant was better than Lebron James, Like, Wow,
they didn't he didn't have as good a team because
the team the Warriors won seventy three games. Hold on
a second, hold on to to steal the drop that
Dan Byer hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on,
hold on, hold on, you had Kyrie Irving, hold on
(06:52):
and Steph Curry. Okay, Steph Curry better than Kyrie Irving,
but Kyrie Irving pretty amazing. Especially go back the year
before when they won the NBA Championship, right, Okay, you
had Kevin Love okay, and Tristan Thompson, and you're like,
whoa Tristan Thompson. Tristan Thompson essentially different but similar role
to Draymond Green, right defender, rebounder, all the little things,
not the pastor Draymond Green. And though Kevin Love now
(07:16):
isn't viewed like Clay like you're going up until he
became a Cleveland Cavalier, Kevin Love had a better career
than Klay Thompson, right, kind of equal parts. One more
Hall of Famer I would agree would be on the
Golden State Warriors. But that's because I personally I think
Draymond Green was on the Golden State Warriors longer. Not
(07:36):
that Tristan Thompson is that much of an inferior player
to Draymond Green at his peak, but in that series,
Kevin Durrant was better than Lebron James. Maybe it's not fair,
maybe it's not a good enough surrounding cast, it's a
good enough you can make that argument. We could have,
but I always thought that Kevin Durant's argument was, Hey,
when I was with Oklahoma City the year before, they
(07:58):
had three games one lead. Think about the lack of spacing.
Go back and watch those games. He faced a virtual
double team every time he got the ball. They failed
in game six, and Klay Thompson was otherworldly in Game six,
and then they lost in Game seven. But his argument was, hey,
if you give me the space, if you put equal
parts around me, I believe I'm better than Lebron James.
(08:20):
And then they go out and they win two titles
and would have won a third had he been healthy.
And yet all all media pundits, all fans could say
was well, he had to join the Warriors in order
to do so. So then he goes and joins the
Brooklyn Nets, which we know ended in disaster. But the
reality is, from my perspective, they were leading the Milwaukee Bucks. Okay,
(08:45):
leading the Milwaukee Bucks. Harden wasn't himself, was hurt. Kyrie
Irving gets hurt, and they go from dominating the Bucks
to losing in Game seven, where he hit a shot
that if his foot was two sizes smaller, they make
he goes to the NBA Finals and maybe they win it,
and it's a completely different narrative. And ever since then
he hasn't been on a good enough team or he's
(09:05):
been injured and it hasn't worked out. But can you
imagine that on the NFL's biggest week, when you have
the chance to have the first Super Bowl champions back
to back to back, a rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles,
a clash of the Titans, that the story on Monday, Tuesday,
and frankly a little bit Wednesday is Luca getting traded.
(09:26):
And then Thursday and Friday and into the weekend Kevin
Durant back with the Warriors. No one's going to start
watching the NBA to the level of the NFL. I'm
not arguing that, but wouldn't it be interesting that the NFL,
who took over Christmas Day that used to belong to
the NBA, then has Super Week taken over by the
(09:47):
NBA in return? All Right, we got a lot to
get to. We have a tremendous, tremendous list of guests

coming to you from the tairaq dot com studios. Here
(10:53):
at Radio Row. It's the side of the Super Bowl
and a man who has coached in this very big game.
It was just announced accepted a job as alma monitor
at CAL. Essentially the we'll get to the actual term
of it, because again at CAL, it's never as easy
as just let's just call the gentleal manager. They had
to come up with a bunch of different stuff. But
basically he's going to kind of oversee parts of the
football program, a position that many in the college game
(11:17):
have now accepted. Ron Rivera is our guest here on
the Dougallab Show.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
Coach, How are you.
Speaker 4 (11:21):
I'm doing well, Doug, I really am.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
How are you good?
Speaker 1 (11:23):
So tell me about the position of CAL.
Speaker 5 (11:25):
Right.
Speaker 6 (11:25):
Well, what we're trying to do is is and we're
still working on the details of it, as you said,
but it really is somebody that's going to work with
the football program. It's going to work in every facet
as much as we can, working with the coaching staff,
trying to help the head coach, trying to help the
head coach get resources, trying to help coach get players,
work with the university intercollegiate department, trying to help fundraising,
(11:46):
help the university fundraise itself. So there's gonna be a
little bit more to it.
Speaker 4 (11:50):
I believe.
Speaker 6 (11:51):
I'm really excited about had an opportunity to talk with
the chancellor about this. It's a neat opportunity, it's unique opportunity,
and I'm excited because it's an opportunity for me to
give back to the university as a whole.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
Yeah, it's and Cal obviously a great place. Number one
public institution in America and a place I know that
there's something different when it's your school. You know, when
it was your school, there's some you've coached in this game.
When you coached in this game, you had an incredible defense.
But so the Denver Broncos, Yes, right, they just and
(12:23):
you just couldn't crack that code. If you could go
back and change one thing about your prep, what would
it be.
Speaker 7 (12:31):
You know?
Speaker 6 (12:31):
In all honesty, to me, it really wasn't about the
prep more than it was about the circumstances. There was
one play I think that really kind of defined it,
and it was the first time we had the balls
in offense and there was a pass play that in
today's game, it's one of those things that it could
have gone either direction, and because of certain elements, it
was called against us. And that one play I really
(12:55):
do think was a little bit of the difference. It
was something that put us behind.
Speaker 7 (12:59):
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (13:00):
It was the past completion incompletion. Cam had thrown a
ball that was right there on the cusp of whether
it was complete or not. It was ruled initially a completion,
then it was overruled as an incompletion. So that was challenge,
and the challenge was, well, not enough evidence to change
it back? Well, okay, if there's not enough evidence to
change it back, then why was it gone from completion
(13:20):
and incompletion?
Speaker 4 (13:21):
You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 6 (13:22):
So it's one of those things you could argue and
it's a little bit of sour grapes on my apartment. No,
but that's the truth of matter because from my perspective,
and then I promise you from their perspective.
Speaker 4 (13:32):
But at the end of the day, when those things happened,
those things do make impacts.
Speaker 6 (13:36):
They do change certain things, and that was one of
the things that was an impactful plays.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
There's no question. I mean, like, look, I'm coaching college basketball.
We're on a losing streak. It's not great. And I
can point to you in so many of these games,
one play, one call where if it goes a different way,
I don't know that the outcome is gonna be different,
but there's a great chance, right. Momentum is a real thing,
and it also kind of screws up. You know, you
have your scripted plays, and when one doesn't go your
(14:03):
way suddenly, now, okay, what do we do? Uh? What
do we do with the with the with the script?
Is it better to have? It's the old? Is it
better to have loved and lost and never loved at all?
Like having gone to the super Bowl but not wonted?
Is that better than not having gone to the super Bowl?
Speaker 4 (14:20):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (14:21):
I agree, it doesn't matter going to the super bowls
and experience in itself, Okay, And only so many people
can say I've been to a super Bowl. Only so
many people can say I've won a super Bowl. I'm
fortunate I can say I have one one and I've lost.
I've lost too, But I've been there, and it's it's
an amazing experience, It really is. It's everything that we
work for as players and as coaches. I mean, when
(14:41):
you get there, you're at the peak. Okay, you're at
the top, but to stand on the very pinnacle, you've
got to win it. So I've been there and and
and I've done both and and to me, it's the
reason why if you get into this game for any
other reason than going and winning the Super Bowl, then
you shouldn't be in this league.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
I mean, so I gotta ask you.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
Cam Newton just said, I know, I know. He just said,
you know, if you give back your MVP to win
a Super Bowl. He's like, nah, you know, I can,
I can, I can? I can? I get can. I
take a guess you're thinking to yourself, but you can't say,
welcome to my world. This was this was what I
was managing.
Speaker 6 (15:21):
Well, the thing about Cam Towo and let's don't forget
he's been to the peak in the pinnacle of college football.
He's won the Heisman and he won a national championship.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
I get it. But we're talking about the NFL.
Speaker 6 (15:31):
I know, in the NFL he's won the MVP. He
hasn't won that. So and tell you when you don't
know what it's about. Okay, that's what all said that
I'll be politically correct.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
Okay. The other part that's interesting is you were known
and it was really I felt like that season and
maybe a little bit later you got the nickname of
Riverboat Run. But the riverboat run at first, and again,
tell me if I'm wrong. You're affair was because you
were generally conservative in nature, right you were. You were
a punt anytime I'm on fourth down. Guy. You were
very very conservative, defensive minded and by the way, that
(16:04):
team was one of the best defenses. It probably doesn't
get credit, right Sean McDermott built it for you. That
was a great defense. But you were conservative and then
all of a sudden you started going for it a
little bit and you got the kind of almost sarcastic
nickname with you, nnam Brush.
Speaker 4 (16:17):
Yeah, I say, tremendous story.
Speaker 6 (16:18):
Really, what happened was after my first two seasons in
the NFL as a head coach, I had this three
and thirteen record of losing games by seven points or less.
And after each year I would sit down with the
previous owner, Jerry Richards, and we would go through the
year and talk about different things. When we finish up
our discussion, I turned him. I says, you know, I
need a mentor. I need somebody to talk with and
(16:39):
understand some things and helped me through some situations. He
kind of chuckles a little bit and he goes, I
want you to look at this, and he slides this
piece of paper across to me and on the piece
of paper John Madden and his phone number.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
He goes, you and I are on the same page.
I want you to call coach. He's expecting your call.
I've already talked to him about you talking to him. Wow,
I get done.
Speaker 6 (17:00):
The first thing I did. I called him right away.
We had this great twenty minute conversation. He says, Hey,
come on out to Pleasant in California, come to my office.
Speaker 4 (17:07):
Let's sit down. Let's talk football.
Speaker 7 (17:09):
So I do.
Speaker 4 (17:10):
I make this plan. I fly out there. We sit down,
we start talking.
Speaker 6 (17:15):
Previously that he told me, go back, look at those
games that you lost, those thirteen games, and see if
there's something you could have done differently. Well, in my
mind it's like, hey, do a report.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
So I go back.
Speaker 6 (17:25):
I watched those thirteen games. I write these notes up,
I do this, I type it all up. I make
this twenty page report from my fly out there. Fled
in California to Red Bear Ventures, go to his office.
Speaker 4 (17:34):
We sit down. We start talking and say, oh, here,
I brought this report you wanted me to do. And
what report? I said, Well, talking about the thirteen games
I had lost. He looks at me and goes, that's
not for me, that's for you. What did you learn?
Speaker 6 (17:45):
I said, Well, like this one here, I punted when
I think we had an opportunity to possibly go for it.
And then on this one I took the field goal
to go up by six, and then they score a
touchdown and beat us by one. He said, yeah, and
each one of those, what could you have done? It said, well,
I could have probably gone for it. He said, exactly,
if Ron, you're being conservative for what reason? I said,
(18:08):
I'm going by the book. He said, what book? There
is no book. And it made me realize when he
said that what I was doing was what was conservative,
what was safe. I wouldn't get criticized if it went
the other way, and made me realize that.
Speaker 4 (18:20):
Shoot.
Speaker 6 (18:20):
So fast forward. Now we're in twenty thirteen. We're playing
a game. We're playing the Giants at home. We get
our first drive, it's fourth down at midfield. I go
for it. We get the first down. We continue on
the drive, get to the goal line. It's fourth in
the goal, go for it, punch it in for a touchdown.
We score a game, we scored, we beat him pretty good.
(18:41):
We shut him. I think we want like thirty three
nothing or something like that. The next week, I do
it in Minnesota. First series of go forward to fourth down,
we get it, get down to the goal line, fourth
and three. We ran a shovel pass touchdown, so we
win the game. After the game, somebody in the media
is interviewing fans, Hey, what do you think.
Speaker 4 (18:58):
Oh, it's great, coach being aggresively. I great. Get to
this one, gentleman. So what'd you think of coach Vera
going for for donnes Well, I'll tell you what.
Speaker 6 (19:04):
Oh, Coach Rivera out there like a riverboat gambler, that
old riverboat ron.
Speaker 1 (19:09):
Now you're splitting aces at the casino. I know your
dad was in the Army. Yes, he was a non
as well. Yes, is that what drew you to USAA?
Speaker 6 (19:17):
Yes, you know the fact that my dad served thirty
two years the United States Army, traveling all over the
world with him. You know, we'd gone to Germany, we'd
gone to Panama, and we were all over the United States.
Our home base was Ford, or California. And so being
part of a military family and understanding exactly what that
commitment of sacrifice is drove me to want to support
the military every opportunity I got. Well, then I get
a little bit of a platform because the usaas Salute
(19:40):
the Service. So from there we do many things that
we can show our support. And the great part was
USA was behind us the whole way. So fast forward
a couple of years, I get an opportunity I win
the USA Salute the Service Award. Very proud moment for me,
but a great moment for my dad. I mean he
was very proud of the whole award, and so I've
joined with them the last few years. Part of it
(20:00):
and the real neat thing is this year's a winner
is is George Kittle from the forty nine Ers, A
guy that does the same thing. He supports so many
different efforts throughout, but he also supports the military in
a big way in USA has recognized him as this
year's Salute the Service Award winner.
Speaker 1 (20:14):
Well, uh, Coach Rivera, I'm sure CALLU is so proud
to have you back all the things you stand for
as well as good.
Speaker 4 (20:26):
God.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
Were you the one tomb up to the commanders?
Speaker 1 (20:30):
He was asking, well, you're the one that suggested the
commanders commander, No, are you kidding.
Speaker 4 (20:35):
I mean, if I could, I would have. I would
have stuck with with with the original name. I grew
up a fan.
Speaker 6 (20:44):
Yes, I believed in it, and and I I know
it's hard for people to understand, but you know, to me,
it's it's it's a traditional thing, and and and we're
not going to name our our sports teams after derogatory name. Sure,
and that's that was always kind of my stance. But
I understood the social issue to social pressures, which was very,
very unfair. I think the thing that people have to
understand too as well, is that you know when when
(21:07):
when you do things and you make decisions, especially a
decision like that, you.
Speaker 4 (21:12):
Have to go out and you've got to really research it.
Speaker 7 (21:14):
Well.
Speaker 6 (21:14):
There was a tremendous amount of research done. I mean,
they they they brought in former players, you know, they
brought in fans, They brought in focus groups, and they
put all these names out to it. And that's how
it was decided. It wasn't decided by me. It was
decided by focus groups, alumni and fans.
Speaker 3 (21:30):
Though I remember that there was a video where they
like blurred out your lips, so it was like Jason
Wright showed it to you.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
I think a bunch of different nicknames.
Speaker 6 (21:39):
Yeah, yeah, and and And the truth of matter is,
at that point what was decided was because this is
the nation's capital, because of where we were. Okay, a
name befitting leadership was probably what we were looking for
because this is the nation's capital. This is this is
this is the base of all the power in the
United States of America. It's worth now, yeah, it's worth
(22:02):
it really is.
Speaker 2 (22:03):
Absolutely it is.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
Well, coach, listen, enjoy back in Berkeley. More things change,
more they stay the same there. It's still berserkly, yes
it is. And thanks so much for being our guests.
Speaker 6 (22:11):
Now, I appreciate the advice you gave me to Doug,
I really do. I know you've been through it as
a coach and understanding what's been going on in the
in the NCAA.
Speaker 1 (22:19):
I have been going through the the the losses, and
I have a mentor in the great Dick Bennett, oh wow,
who helps me sort through all these things as well.
So I'm actually learning from you as we speak. So
I appreciate that.
Speaker 4 (22:30):
We thank you very much, Doug.
Speaker 1 (22:32):

Show here on Fox Sports Radio. And I'm actually super
(22:52):
psyched about talking with David Montgomery, running back obviously Detroit Lions,
who joins us here on The Doug Gottlieb Show, just
because of the Lions in that story and what happens now,
but also I mean his rise to superstardom at Iowa
State because as a Big twelve guy, remember when Iowa
State was at the bottom of the league. He was
(23:13):
part of what's been built there with Matt Campbell and
now one of the dominant teams in the Big Twelve.
But you're also joining us on behalf of Scouting America.
Speaker 5 (23:22):
Why yeah, I mean, I think ultimately, you know, you
get lost in between the attributes and the things I've
done on the field, and people don't really know a
much that much about like scouting and how much it's
kind of shaped who I am today. So yeah, I'm
just here to kind of like pay homage and you know,
shed more light on something that helped, you know, create
(23:43):
who I am to this day.
Speaker 1 (23:44):
But you grew up like in the heart in Ohio,
in the football country, right. Were you under underrecruited?
Speaker 5 (23:50):
I like to say so, yeah, very underly recruited. Didn't
have a bunch of offers, So why the world may
never know, but it worked out, so I don't complain any.
Speaker 1 (24:01):
When you got to Iowa State, what were your expectations to.
Speaker 5 (24:04):
Be the best version of myself that I could be
every day and prove myself right and don't worry about
proving anybody else wrong.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
How long did it take before it hit before you?
Like where? I mean, obviously you had the self confidence
that you knew ultimately, but where everyone around you was like, oh,
he's a dude.
Speaker 7 (24:25):
The people who really knew already really knew. But I
don't know. I really don't care, honestly, but yeah, I
don't know.
Speaker 1 (24:34):
What was it like to take Iowa State to heights
that they hadn't really experienced.
Speaker 5 (24:40):
It definitely wasn't something that was done single handedly. You know,
it was a bunch of guys who committed the same
amount or if more amount of time to try to
change the place's culture. And you know, because Kimmel did
a great job in bringing the right guys in. You
know a lot of people like to go for like
the five Stars, all the guys that got the crazy numbers,
(25:01):
but they forget about like the ball player, Like can
you bring in people who are willing to be selfless
enough to do whatever it takes to win for each other?
And I think when you you're able to build a
culture around that and you know the people there and
that the players that actually believe.
Speaker 7 (25:19):
In it, I think you can do something special. So
I was just happy to be a part of it.
Speaker 1 (25:23):
What what was you talk about culture and what that
was built there? What was so unique about the Lions
in comparison to other previous NFL seasons you'd.
Speaker 7 (25:36):
Ha, Yeah, seasons are team either.
Speaker 6 (25:40):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (25:40):
You know, I tell people to this day, you know,
I love Chicago and I love I'm so appreciative of
you know, them taking a chance on a kid who
didn't they no one really believed in. But I think
Detroit's like I'm from Cincinnati, Ohio. Like I'm from a
pretty a pretty violent area in a place that you know,
is proceive to just create and bring negativity. But when
(26:05):
I get to Detroit, it's a it's a blue collar place.
You know, it just felt like it fit like a glove.
Someone would say, it's a blue collar place that people
don't really know much about. It's a lot of character,
it's a lot of possessed. There's a lot of stuff
there that people don't understand that if you just are there,
it's not as bad as you think it is. It's
(26:25):
a place who loves to love people, you know. So yeah,
it just it just feels different.
Speaker 1 (26:32):
What what about Dan Campbell makes you guys play at
such a high level. I guess it would say for him,
but it feels like with him, like what what what
is it about him on a day to day basis
that you guys embrace.
Speaker 7 (26:46):
Well, I could speak for myself personally, you know, Coach Campbell.
Speaker 5 (26:50):
When I when I first had a conversation with him,
and I talked to him when I first got to Detroit,
I let him know like, look, I'm no where close
to where I can be and where I will be,
But I wanted to let him know like I appreciate
him looking at me and.
Speaker 7 (27:10):
Being able to think that I can help this team.
Speaker 5 (27:12):
And after he said, after I said that, he looked
me right in my face and he said the things
that you don't know, I know, and he was basically
just talking about my potential and what I could be.
Speaker 4 (27:23):
He he just was like.
Speaker 5 (27:25):
Reassured me that he knew exactly who I was going
to be without even like being knowing who I was yet. Yeah,
so he just wanted them people. He's a gritty dude,
you know. He wants football players. He don't he don't
want to look forty times and he don't want that
because that could run the culture.
Speaker 7 (27:42):
He wants ball players.
Speaker 1 (27:44):
What what's that like? To be the best team in
the NFC And then it's over. So it feels like
so quickly.
Speaker 5 (27:51):
Yeah, I mean two years in a row we kind
of felt short. This year was like a more unfortunate
way because that wasn't our break and the ball that
we played, we didn't come out like we usually come out.
But yeah, it definitely sucks, you know, being so close
with being so far in the same you know, aspect,
and you see two other teams playing in the ball,
(28:12):
you be like, that's supposed to be us, but that's
everybody right.
Speaker 1 (28:16):
So yeah, but last year you're literally yeah, I don't
want to say have the game, but you gotta lead
in San Francisco and then nego superpol And then this year,
everybody's got to come through Detroit, right, and and you know,
you get behind and turn the football over a little
bit and then it's like now it's all of a
sudden kind of playing catchup. Like you said, you get
out of yourself for sure.
Speaker 5 (28:36):
You know, it's a place that Detroit, it's not a
place that's used to winning, not place of used to
you know, handling like the success part of things.
Speaker 7 (28:48):
But it's one thing to.
Speaker 5 (28:52):
Lose and to allow that to like eat you. But
it's another thing to lose and know that it sounds
crazy to lose and to know like you're gonna be
way better than what you were. Yes, like we have No,
I ain't like we lost. It sucks, it hurt, but
like I know who I am, and I know what
I'm finna do, and I know those other guys in
(29:13):
the locker room, and I know who coach Campbell is.
So we're gonna be in the Super Bowl and we
gonna win it. So it's not right now, how challenging
will be with new coordinators, not challenging at all. The
players make the plays, the culture. It's a player run team.
You know, we're gonna be just fine. As long as
we got coach Campbell at the top and that's where
(29:33):
we need to be, will be fine.
Speaker 1 (29:34):
No, player led teams are the best led teams.
Speaker 7 (29:37):
You know.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
I'm a college I'm a college head, a basketball coach,
and it's like, you can call all the plays you want,
it doesn't matter. It's about those guys figure it out
right fair enough.
Speaker 7 (29:45):
That's exactly what it's about.
Speaker 1 (29:48):
When you watch these two teams.
Speaker 7 (29:50):
Who do you have?
Speaker 1 (29:52):
Let's let's start with Saquon Yeah, pro to pro? What
do you admire about Saquon?
Speaker 5 (29:59):
I think everyth you know sa Kwan, I don't think
he really had an opportunity to show like all his
abilities when he was in New York. But like run
from a running back to a running back, like you
see him doing some of the things that he does,
is like it's not surprising at all.
Speaker 7 (30:15):
Just because of who he is and how he worked.
Speaker 5 (30:16):
Bro he jumped over due that life. That's not surprising.
That's not no, not coming from him. He's like he's
a freaking nature.
Speaker 1 (30:23):
But yeah, do you ever watch Pacheco run like yo man,
slow down like he's he runs like you're holding the
turbo button down.
Speaker 7 (30:31):
Nah, for sure. He just run like he run like
he'd have been through a lot in his life.
Speaker 1 (30:36):
Yes, yeah, like Le'Veon Bell used to come up and
like survey and try and pick apart the whole, and
he's the opposite. He's just like get it gone.
Speaker 7 (30:44):
Yeah for sure. I mean that's how I mean you
could you know he respect the game.
Speaker 1 (30:48):
So you said, you know what you're you're you to do?
What's your ceiling?
Speaker 7 (30:54):
My ceiling? Yes, I don't believe in ceilings. You know.
Speaker 5 (30:59):
I just go out and I work every day, every
chance that I get in. Whatever it looks like after
it's done, that's what it'll be.
Speaker 1 (31:06):
Scouting America, Cay. You go to ww dot be a
scout dot org, and I know you credit them with
helping discover you, helping get your name out there. If
I'm a parent or I'm a kid, I'm sixteen years
old and I'm somewhere in the Midwest, and I got
a kid who's a grinder, a football player, what's your
advice to them? On the summer on getting ready for
(31:26):
next year.
Speaker 5 (31:29):
For me, skared with scouting. So it sounds cliche, but
like me being able to be a part of scouting
and understanding that I had to learn how to juggle
both things and holding the same amount of importance in
scouting that it was to me involved and realizing how
much they partnered together, Like the things that I was
(31:50):
learning in Scouts that I was applying to the field
that was enabling me to be a better player. Yeah,
if I was a parent, which I am now, and
what's my son's going to do. He's going to be
a scouting like because he needs to learn different aspects
of the world that you can't seek out there by yourself.
You had to be a part of a place that
(32:10):
loves you unconditionally and wants to show you how to survive.
So parents, go go put your kids in scouting. It's
a necessity.
Speaker 7 (32:19):
They need it. And if you want to find more
out about Scouts, just go to be Scout dot org.
Speaker 1 (32:24):

to a game? This is game time.
Speaker 4 (33:15):
On The Doug Gottlieb Show.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
Doug. It is a Wednesday, and the game today is.
Speaker 4 (33:21):
For better or worse?
Speaker 1 (33:24):
For better worse? The old marriage game?
Speaker 2 (33:25):
Huh?
Speaker 3 (33:25):
Mostly a Super Bowl Super Bowl related topic, Better or
worse today except the first question, for better or worse?
Speaker 2 (33:34):
Which is better or which is worse?
Speaker 3 (33:36):
Major League Baseball trade deadline versus the NBA trade deadline.
Speaker 1 (33:42):
Traditionally, Major League Baseball trade deadline has been better, but
NBA trade deadline recently has been way better.
Speaker 2 (33:48):
I would agree with that. That's why I asked the question.
Speaker 3 (33:50):
All right, now moving on to our NFL action for
Better or Worse helmet and the Super Bowl Chiefs or Eagles.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
Cheeps the red?
Speaker 1 (34:03):
Yeah? The red? The arrowhead did the arrowhead? Yeah? Cheeps?
Speaker 3 (34:09):
More unique, more unique? This is now where it gets fun.
For Better or Worse nineties legend Randall Cunningham versus Christian Okoye.
Speaker 1 (34:23):
Oh wow, random? Well, I mean Randal Cunny am born
to early right, I would say, well, Christian Okoye better nickname,
Randon worst player? Yes, yeah, I mean the Nigerian Nightmare
(34:45):
is a great nickname.
Speaker 2 (34:46):
And the tech mobile aspect of it sure obviously comes
into play.
Speaker 1 (34:51):
But I mean the Nigerian Nightmare is an amazing nickname.
Speaker 2 (34:56):
It's great it is, and he was he was really good.
But Randall Cunningham was.
Speaker 1 (35:00):
He was like Derrick Henry, but only for one year
or two? Right, If Derrick Henry had like two really
good years.
Speaker 3 (35:06):
The problem was Barry Word came in and then did
the same thing, and you're like, well, maybe it wasn't
as unique as we thought. Sure, all right, For Better
or Worse Hall of Fame edge rusher Reggie White versus
Derek Thomas.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
I mean it's Reggie White's the answer. Yes, I mean
that Reggie Wie is better. No disrespect, no disrespect. I mean, look,
Derek Thomas is a great player, but didn't go far
in the playoffs. And then I do think there's a
part when you tragically die, you know, before you live
out a full life, then you're always gonna be remembered
greater than maybe you were.
Speaker 2 (35:38):
Sure both of them, both of them left us too soon.
Speaker 3 (35:42):
Sports Complex, Kansas City Sports Complex or Philadelphia's Sports Complex?
Speaker 2 (35:47):
Which better or worse?
Speaker 1 (35:50):
I'm gonna go Philadelphia, Okay, uh Philadelphia?
Speaker 2 (35:53):
Off for broad Street.
Speaker 1 (35:54):
Well, it's right up a broad Street. Plus you have
the arena and the two stadiums, whereas in Kansas City
you just have the two stadiums. You don't have uh.
I think it's the Sprint Center now, which is downtown.
Uh in the P and L district power uh power
light district. So just the three versus two.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
And all of the other old Philly arenas or stadiums
are We're in the same spot. So that's what the
spectrum was. That's where old JFK Stadium.
Speaker 1 (36:22):
This is where. This is where we do football. This
is where we do hockey.
Speaker 3 (36:25):
This is where we do stuff. Where the vet was,
this is where we do stuffy. For Better or Worse
food Philly cheese steak versus k C Barbeque.
Speaker 1 (36:32):
Can't say barbecue. Anybody who says otherwise is lying. Oh geez,
where's the boot come from?
Speaker 2 (36:38):
Who didn't like that?
Speaker 7 (36:39):
Boom?
Speaker 2 (36:41):
Oh that's Philly Sam, Philly cheesesteaks Sam.
Speaker 1 (36:43):
You wait, have you been to Kansas City?
Speaker 7 (36:46):
I have, and it's very good.
Speaker 4 (36:48):
But I gotta go with the cheese steak.
Speaker 2 (36:49):
Wait?
Speaker 1 (36:50):
What how many different kinds of barbecue if you tried?
Speaker 4 (36:52):
I mean two or three? Maybe?
Speaker 1 (36:54):
Okay, Yeah, it's not Yeah, it's not like cheese. WHI
was on on on cheap steak or barbecue is? It's
not really a question.
Speaker 3 (37:06):
I did go to Pat's King of Steaks in Philly
once and I got mine with prob alone, and I
knew what I was in for. My wife got one
with whiz. She was thought of kindly. I gotta look.
I didn't get comments, but I gotta look. Yeah, they're
they're both delicious. Final comments, Final category for better or worse.
(37:29):
Celebrity fans Bradley Cooper and Rob mclenny versus Eric stone
Street and Paul Rudd stone Street and Rudd Chiefs fans
Bradley Cooper and mclenny, the Philadelphia Eagles fans.
Speaker 1 (37:45):
What Bradley Cooper, Bradley Cooper you think so? All right,
Badley Cooper A man a lot? Youre Paul red people.
I'm gonna go Bradley and that's his game time is
game time on the dug out of the show right now.
