Of course, he's a former executive with the Packers. And yeah,
that was probably an oversight of me. I could have
picked the Packers to go a Super Bowl. I just
a lot of unknown there.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
And they struggled in their division. This year they won
out of their division against what I thought was a
pretty soft schedule. But we'll see, we'll see. Two losses
to the Eagles doesn't turn out to look so bad
because they were very competitive with the Eagles. But the
Eagles are of course Super Bowl champions, and so a
lot to discuss. Anyway, a reminder, if you like listening

do something we call don't call it a throwback Thursday.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
Don't call it a throwback thack Thursday.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Okay, Jay Stu, what's the year worth not calling it
a throwback?
Speaker 4 (01:39):
To thank you, Doug. I'll take it from here. It's
raining with a temperature of forty seven degrees outside. The
traffic will be next. Now I want you, guys, ought
to go back twenty nine years twenty nine Okay, what
were you? What were you doing in nineteen ninety six?
Speaker 1 (02:00):
I remember that freshman not tre.
Speaker 4 (02:03):
Dame nineteen ninety six. This week the NBA All Star
Game happened. Now I'm gonna read you the names of
this All Star Game, and you're gonna think, WHOA how
cool was watching sports?
Speaker 5 (02:18):
Back then.
Speaker 4 (02:20):
Ohly short answer, short answer, very cool. Michael Jordan was
the MVP of the All Star Game. He led a
team with Scottie Pippen, his running mate Shaquille O'Neill, Anthony Hardaway,
Reggie Miller came off the bench, Glenn Rice came off
the bench. Alonza Morning, but Grant Hill was the lead
(02:43):
vote getter that year. Now it's important this little piece
of information. Dan loves uniforms and he will confirm this.
The ninety five ninety six season was the final year
in the Pistons traditional uniforms. Know that they won those
titles with and then in the fall of ninety six,
(03:05):
the Pistons donned maybe the worst uniforms in the history
of sports, and they wore those for about five five
years before going back.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
Uh, Dan Byer, can you confirm or deny.
Speaker 5 (03:17):
They were they were top They were bottom five I
think in worst uniforms, and they were so bad that
now people will look back and because they're unique. And
that's the thing.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
Was that the tiel Ones with the Piston thing they
kind of like was like almost a megaphon horse. It was, Yes,
what was the horse about?
Speaker 5 (03:38):
Like a I think it was a horse.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
Yeah, it was a horse. What was the must I
don't understand what the horse was.
Speaker 5 (03:43):
I think it was a Mustang. And then it had
the a Ford Mustang.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
Yeah yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
They weren't the Mustangs. They were the pistons. Pistons like fire.
Why not have like a visualization of firing.
Speaker 5 (03:55):
Pistons, because they did have it formed into what was
like pistons or exhaust exhausts.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
Again, those are exhausts. They're not pistons. I couldn't fix
a car. I can't. I can change a tire. I
can change my oil. Man, I don't need to change
my oil right now because I have a electric car.
But that's not the point. Point is I change a tire,
can change my ole. I don't know where the pistons are.
I do know what pistons look like. And those are exhausts.
Who I there? There has to be like a story
(04:23):
on this one. You know, this feels like a boardroom.
Where's like, hey, guys, got an idea. Okay, you're gonna
change uniforms, okay, kind of spice them up. Pistons ones
are very average looking. What are you guys thinking? We're like, good?
Love it? How about some flames. Okay, keep going because
the pistons fire. I get it, I get it, I
get it. We're gonna throw a horse in there. Why
(04:45):
Mustang Mustangs? Cars, cars, pistons? Okay? Or this is there's
no bad answers? What else?
Speaker 5 (04:52):
Synergy shaust pipes?
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Are we sponsored by the Ford Motor Company with the
Ford Mustangs?
Speaker 3 (04:57):
No?
Speaker 1 (04:57):
Why are we throwing a Mustang? Just go with it.
It all right to mock it up for me and
I'll approve it. What happens is there were a hundred
bucks and at some point someoney goes I don't know,
just I like teal used the teal ones and that's
what they went with.
Speaker 4 (05:12):
It was awful. But Grant Hill that day in the
All Star Game had fourteen points. And I just want
to tell you the the team that made up the
West Sean Kemp, Jason Kidd, Clyde Drexler, Charles Barklay, Hakeem Olajuwan,
Gary Payton coming off the bench, it's just like a
who's who of the Hall of Fame. Karl Malone and
John Stockton came off the bench. My goodness, those are
(05:34):
all right, incredible, every one of those guys.
Speaker 5 (05:39):
With everyone Kevin Garnett, second team All Rookie. Remember took
Garnett a little bit in a little while to yeah,
to burst onto the scene. And at ninety five ninety
six season ninety six, great year for me, last year
of the freshman year in college. And then the next
(06:01):
semester was early and in the sophomore season when six
of us moved into a house, four bedrooms in one bathroom.
That was amazing. That NBA season you mentioned it, Jason
was some of the All Stars. But in fact, that
Sonics team from the downfall of them losing to the
(06:22):
Nuggets a few years earlier in the first round, I think.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
Wen Kevin mctumba had the ball.
Speaker 5 (06:31):
Yeah, the Utah Jazz obviously made it to the finals
the next two seasons, but I was in the camp
that this was going to be the start of the
run for the Sonics, that this was If we saw
both Sonics again the next year, it wouldn't have surprised
me that young core of Sean Kemp and Gary Payton.
And it did not happen, and that was there, one
(06:52):
and done in that series. And yeah, a lot of
great names from the mid nineties, but I thought that
Sonics team was was going to go on a run
and it never happened.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
Nineteen ninety six was the year that the Florida Gators,
I know was in ninety seven, but they were national champions.
So the head ball coach Steve Currier Burrier, well, yeah,
Dan Waterble is our quarterback. Hell. And then of course,
in the I think the ninety seven Rose Bowl, which
was the ninety sixth season, Arizona State beat Ohio State.
Speaker 5 (07:23):
That is not correct. Ohio State came back to beat
Arizona State.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
In the ninety six season, but the ninety seven Rose Bowl,
Ohio State came from behind to beat Arizona State.
Speaker 5 (07:34):
Yes, exactly. Ohio State was a nine nothing on Michigan
at the half of their game, and then in the
second half a cold day in Columbus, it happens Sean Springs,
the best cornerback in college football that season, slipped on
the turf, allowing Ty Streets to score about the sixty
eight yard touchdown and Ohio State was dealt their only
(07:55):
loss of the season by Michigan. Again, you wonder where
my disdain is again if they in that game, they
are national champs because they beat Arizona State in the
Rose Bowl.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
Is that a John Cooper team?
Speaker 5 (08:06):
It was a John Cooper team. It was one of
his better teams, not his best team. His best team,
I felt was two years later, actually in nineteen ninety eight,
but oh so close to a national championship that year.
And then it was Florida and Florida State, as you said,
in the Sugar Bowl, playing for that national championship.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Do you guys remember what rule was changed in college
football in nineteen ninety six? It changed ninety five ninety
six first season overtime.
Speaker 5 (08:30):
I was just about to say, could you hear it?
Can you meet about to say for time? Yeah? No,
Google back replay, great job, hold on.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Let me let's do it again. So it again. Do
you guys know what rule was changed and implemented in
the ninety six season. Now, the rule was actually changed
in ninety five overtime? Yes? Yes, all right, thank you,
good job, and it nailed it great over ties ninety
six final four? What was significant about ninety six Final four? Dan,
I know you're gonna probably answer this one. Jase or Sam,
(09:00):
you want to take a shot.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
At Jim Beheim leaves that leads his orangeman back to
the final game.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
So that's that's part of it.
Speaker 4 (09:06):
John Wallace got paid by the way. John had an
amazing run.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
And that was whether the custon in the house, oh
my god, my god, and the custon in the house,
Oh my god. There's a famous video of the late
great Al McGuire, uh dancing with with those guys who
we I was a Notre dame. We're the worst team
in the Big East, and we led at the we
were up sixteen at the half at the at the
Carrier Dome, up six with a minute ago and lost.
(09:32):
And then we're up I think at the half in
the Big East tournament in the first round the next
week and lost again. Anyway, But that's what was significant
about it. There was Dante Jones, a different Dante Jones
than you think of played was Mississippi State's best player
with Eric dan Pure and Dante Jones was famous for
I think fifty two credits obtained to get him eligible
(09:55):
in the summer of before he played for Misissippi State.
That's called the magic pencil theory, U. But what was
significant about it was that's the last final four played
in an arena.
Speaker 5 (10:06):
Meadal Lands.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
Yeah, the Meadowlands Continental Airlines Arena, same thing. Jimmy Hoffa
buried somewhere around there. Anyway, that was the last time
they played the final four in an arena, and they
played you know, Syracuse being there, Kentucky being there, unbelievable ticket.
I know this because we had four tickets, sold them
and paid for our entire trip and watched it at
a bar across the river in Manhattan.
Speaker 5 (10:26):
You Mass the other team with Marcus Camby and caller
Perry yep.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
Am I tracking this right? The current head coach of
Kentucky played on that team.
Speaker 5 (10:33):
Yes, Mark Pope, who's the captain on that team, right?
Speaker 1 (10:37):
And John Caliperry who has then went on to become
the coach at Kentucky later in his career. And the
coach of the Nets was the coach of U Mass
also in the final four.
Speaker 5 (10:46):
But got it. What a year it was in golf.
I know you guys, just remember what happened in nineteen
ninety six.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
Who could forget what happened in nineteen ninety six?
Speaker 5 (10:56):
All what you're right now? The US Opened won by
Steve Oh Steve Jones. The Open Championship. Tom Layman is
lone major and the then the PGA won by Mark
Brooks definitely pales in comparison to what happened on Sunday
at Augusta.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
Can you remember what happened Sunday Augusta?
Speaker 5 (11:16):
You can remember because Greg Norman collapsed on the final day,
allowing Nick Faldo to claim another green jacket. It was
the collapse of all collapse. And when we talked about chokes,
you may you may talk about Scott Norwood, you may
talk about Bill Buckner, but Greg Norman's name, especially after
(11:41):
nineteen ninety six, completely fixated a top. After he blew
that lead at Augusta on Sunday, it was and with Norman,
what made it so crazy was because he had had
other heartbreaks and other majors before. But then he goes
out and shoots seventy eight, blowing the six stroke lead,
(12:06):
and that put everything in pen like if he wins
that maybe we're not looking at him like we do today.
But that that cemented everything, That put it all right.
Greg Norman six stroke league couldn't get it done at Augusta.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
That was the year that the Braves lost to the
Yankees in the World Series. Correct.
Speaker 4 (12:30):
It was the first year of the Yankees Dynasty. The
first championship year, Jim Lawitt set the big home run
off Mark Wallers. A lot of people thought that was
the summer of the Yankees, but Sam I would say,
most people think it was the summer of this.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
Oh but didn't didn't.
Speaker 5 (12:51):
Coina, I'm doing the dance right now.
Speaker 6 (12:55):
Oh YEAHA.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
This is going to ruin so many people's day because
they're gonna be dying around. They're gonna go home and
go up. What is that earworm? I gat hey, I
got to.
Speaker 4 (13:10):
It's spent twenty five weeks above the charts in the
summer of ninety six. Other songs that we picked from
that year. Dan loves the song it was actually.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
Playing, so we just keep playing Macran. It annoys people
the rest of the day.
Speaker 6 (13:26):
People still they still play this in arenas and stadiums,
and people still do that stupid dance. It's very family friendly,
it always is.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
It, even with the rolling in the hips after It
depends on how you roll your hips and watch the thrusting. Yeah,
well like two pumps, okay, three pumps, that's a penalty.
But I like to do this. I've done this like
periodically just to get people at earworm. What other songs.
Speaker 4 (13:52):
I think Dan appreciates a song. I'm just guessing. I
hate to try to predict what Dan liked and what
he doesn't music wise. But Mariah Carey, I think, did
a duet with Boys to Men. It went something like this.
Where does this rank on your your list of nineties
(14:12):
like R and B boy band stuff?
Speaker 5 (14:14):
Down? It is? It is a really good song. And
it's funny because I never considered Boys to Men as
a boy band. I consider them as an R and
B group. Yes, I didn't consider them into the factory
of what in Sync and Backstreet Boys were, and honestly
they were there before that, just like I don't look
at a new addition as a boy band. But it
was in the same realm. So, I mean, Boys to
(14:37):
Men was huge and they really could sing, so to
have this this was another this is another mega mega hit.
But this was after End of the Road, right this?
Speaker 1 (14:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (14:49):
Yeah, so like this is like, I mean, this is
Deon Sanders joining the Cowboys, That's what this is. Like
that it was like just because they were both at
the at the top of their games at that at
that point, and yeah, I like this song.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
I feel like this was used in a movie, wasn't it.
Speaker 6 (15:04):
It was very big at school dances too. I mean
Macarina hands on hips Sam. Yeah, it makes you keep
that balloon or that beach ball between you and your
dance partner. But I didn't didn't the boys didn't boys
to men. They all met at like a kind of
an artist musical prep school in Philadelphia.
Speaker 5 (15:22):
I think that's where they started, right. My sister lives Motown, Philly.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
Back again.
Speaker 6 (15:27):
Maybe we'll come back with that next break, but they
all my sister lives pretty close to where these guys
all started in this uh this musical uh in creative
prep school there in Philadelphia.
Speaker 5 (15:39):
That's South Philly.
Speaker 4 (15:41):
I'll leave the I'll leave the movies for Doug. He
loves the movie part of this. But the spice.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
Crossroads, Crossroads that year meet you at the Crossroads. That's
the one I remember from Bone Thugs in Harmony. That
was a big Bone Thugs.
Speaker 5 (15:55):
Ben Daniel'll appreciate this well. Hold on now.
Speaker 6 (16:00):
Bone Thugs and Yeah cross Roads is number seven on
the year end Billboard Hot one hundred. Bone Thugs and
Harmony Back to you, guys.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
The Price is Right celebrated their twenty fifth year in existence.
Dan Bob Barker was the host.
Speaker 5 (16:17):
Of course, m.
Speaker 4 (16:20):
Carrie strugg led the uh led the American gymnastics team
to a gold That was a big deal.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
That was the ankle thing was at her? Who was
it had the ankle thing?
Speaker 4 (16:30):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (16:30):
Bad ankle?
Speaker 4 (16:31):
Yep, bad ankle?
Speaker 1 (16:32):
Uh is there? Ever, there's never been a conspiracy theory
on that one that she was actually okay and it
was you know.
Speaker 4 (16:39):
I think there was a blood in the sock? Or
am I confusing that with another sports moment? Prince Charles
and Princess Diana call it quits after nearly four years
of separation, and of course it's a year out from
Princess Diana's Faithful Day. Any movies stick out before we
break in? Andrew Brandt, Yes, Yes, from the Bunch of
(17:03):
Big Movie.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
Gerry McGuire was that year. Who's coming with Me? What's
that's that's also you had me from Hello?
Speaker 6 (17:12):
Uh, but here's this Doug Jerry McGuire coming in at
a distant eighteenth at the box office that year, there were.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
Some what's also Brussell's Sports Show?
Speaker 6 (17:20):
Oh yeah, I love Jerry McGuire, Jane orm such sling
Blade would hear Shlean Blade Bob orton.
Speaker 5 (17:29):
Top four Films Independence Day number one.
Speaker 1 (17:32):
That was back when Will Smith owned the fourth of July.
Speaker 5 (17:35):
I mean that was that was the summer mega block.
I just feel that it's only fitting. I'm sorry, I'm
gonna make the executive decision to cut this off because
Andrew Brandt's coming up next. But we did not talk
about the NFL. And that was the year that the
Green Bay Packers finally broke through in the Greason by Packers,
topping the previous dominance of the Cowboys and forty nine Ers,
Brett Favre, the and Reggie White, leading them ultimately to
(17:57):
Super Bowl thirty one where they beat Bill Parcell. But
that season Brett Favre MVP was the season of the
Green Bay Packers starting that dynasty in the National Football League.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
One more thing, let's get back to movies. That thing
you Do was the Tom Hankslick. I only brought it
up because the beginning scenes were supposed to be in Erie, Pennsylvania.
It was actually filmed in Orange, California, in the Orange Circle.
And to those of you know, Orange is my hometown.
That's where I matriculated through elementary school and middle school
(18:29):
when I going to three different middle schools before going
to high school in Tustin just to the South Swingers
also that year, Swingers that year. And I think the
English Pitient won Best Picture, which is another one of
those movies that everyone says was really good and no
one I know actually watched. Yep, Yep, there you go,
(18:50):
and uh, thats don't call it a throwback. Thursday.
Speaker 3 (18:54):

Speaker 1 (19:07):
Stug Ottleab show Here on Fox Sports Radio, we'll get
you an update on what James Cook is asking for upcoming.
Matter of fact, let's just work it in with Andrew Branton,
who joins us. Andrew brand of course a former executive
with the Packers. He's the host of the Business and
Sports podcast and the DraftKings Network. He's also the author
of the Sunday seven newsletter, and he's kind of spent
enough to spend some time this year on Fox Sports Radio. Andrew,
(19:30):
what's your reaction to what felt like a complete mismatch
in personnel on Sunday in New Orleans.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
Yeah, I mean I picked it, Doug, And I'm not
here to gloat. I'm just here to say I'm surprised.
I was one of the only ones picking an Eagles
victory that was not even closed because just a complete
disadvantage or advantage and talent. I looked at the rosters.
That's what we did the Packers like, we should beat
this team if we have all these position groups more
(20:02):
talented than their position groups. And I could only come
up with quarterback as a position for the Chiefs that
had more talent than the Eagles. Of course, that quarterback
was under duress the entire game between the lines, especially
Eagles defensive line compared to the Chief's offensive line. It
(20:23):
made me think, Doug, how in the world did the
Chiefs win all those games with that offensive line. It's
average at best. And I know Mahomes magic, and I
know all their wins by a pointer or at the
end of the games. But once they've faced this juggernaut
of an Eagles team that went out the window, this
is not going to be a close game. They can
(20:44):
win at the last second. So I was not that surprised.
And I think my last comment is we got snowed
all year. We collectively the Lions are sexy, the Vikings
are great, story, the Chiefs, of course, the Bills. The
Eagles was sitting under our nose the whole year. I
mean they lost once since September, and that game hurts
(21:05):
got hurt, like that was the team and we just
kind of maybe a lot of people are just kind
of like, yeah, we don't really like them, but they
were the team. Uh yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
I mean it's also spair to say, like the Lions,
what would that talent look like if they didn't have
but thirteen guys? Yeah, one on defense?
Speaker 2 (21:26):
Yeah, I guess that's the case too. But I know,
if you had to tell me it made me pick,
I would have picked the Eagles of the Lions, even
healthy fair enough.
Speaker 1 (21:35):
Doug Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Radio. What are
the challenges like for Howie to keep this group together?
Speaker 2 (21:43):
A couple of big free agents, not a lot, but
the one I think is going to be easy to
sign is Boum If I'm saying that right, the linebacker
they got cheap from New Orleans, he's oberously going to
make a multiple of what he's making hardly minimum from
his free agents last year. But he is one of
(22:03):
those guys that if he goes away from Vic Fangio's system,
he will not be the same player. Obviously, he turned
into a wonderful player. He's going to stay. I have
no doubt about that. Josh Swtz a defensive end, a
premier pass rusher, He's gonna have options. But the Eagles
drafted this kid Hunt to replace him eventually, or replace
any pass rusher they lose.
Speaker 3 (22:25):
I think the.
Speaker 2 (22:26):
Defensive tackle Williams is the other one's gonna have a
big market. They may lose him, but they've got those
Georgia guys, so they're well prepared and they may just
keep one of those defensive linemen over the other.
Speaker 1 (22:39):
Okay, what about the Chiefs. You know that, I know
they only lost one regular season game. The second one
was Week eight team with backups.
Speaker 5 (22:48):
I get it.
Speaker 1 (22:49):
But you know they just keep kind of patching this
thing together. How hard will be to you know, they
got replenish that that, That offensive line obviously got to
fix that. Other fixes needed on the offensive side the ball.
How difficult will it be for the Chiefs?
Speaker 2 (23:05):
Well, Brett Beach has built this team around the magic
of Mahomes, you can see it. Not a lot spent
on offense. I mean, you've got these middle tier veteran
wide receivers and running backs. I know that Hopkins was
once special, I don't think it is now, and the
Smith Schusters and that group, and then of course Kareem
(23:27):
Hunts had cast off in many places, and the Checko's,
the seventh rounders, they're just kind of making do. But
having said that, Doug, it's all offensive line. To me,
it's like that left tackle is not a good one,
that right tackle is not a good one. Mahomes somehow
has overcome that. But yeah, it's time. It's time to
(23:50):
put resources first round pick free agent towards that offensive line.
I mean they have with Humphrey center, of course, but
on the tackles, of specially.
Speaker 1 (24:01):
What is the coaching hire that surprised you the most.
Speaker 2 (24:08):
I think the obvious one is Dallas. It just seemed
like there was no even move to interview serious candidate
that would have some juice, that would have some inspiration
to Cowboys fans, that would create some kind of excitement
about the team going forward. Brian Schottenheimer is a lifelong
(24:29):
assistant and a good one. Fine, But my point is,
if they were going to keep the same system, why
not just keep Mike? And Mike has gravitas McCarthy, and
I understand they thought about number of years and money,
but to end up with basically the assistant to Mike,
(24:51):
You're getting the same thing, just a less accomplished coach.
And I hate to be one of those cliche people
Doug that say, well, Jerry Jones doesn't want anyone to
get spotlight because it sounds so cliche everyone says it,
but maybe it is true.
Speaker 1 (25:05):
Yeah, but let me can I can I offer up
but a little a little different view of it. Yeah, okay,
so you said wise than just Mike. I feel like
both sides badly misplayed their hand. Right. This was a
Mike thinking he had he had the Bears in his
back pocket, right, he thought he had the Bears thing
in his back pocket, and the Cowboys thinking Mike's not
(25:28):
gonna leave, let me leave. He's the coach of the Cowboys, right,
And both of them kind of approached it in sort
of arrogant I know what's gonna happen next fashion and
the Cowboys are like, all right, well, we don't want
to have you for we don't want to give you
a three year contract, like we got to win now.
And Mike, you know, balked and walked because he thought
he had the Bears deal because you know you heard
(25:51):
it too. I heard it that the Bears thing that
was gonna be McCarthy.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
So yeah, and I'm kind of beyond that. My whole
thing is, Okay, you don't get Mike for whatever contract
did work out. He misplayed his hand.
Speaker 1 (26:04):
Yeah, but then, but then, I mean, I'm sure Dak
stepped up. If you listen to Dax's cumments know, he
want to play for Mike. He doesn't want a different system.
He's like, I like this system. The system works. Okay,
well begin have Mike. Let's get that right.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
Yeah, and listen the sexy part. I'm not suggesting Dion.
I don't think Dion would have worked. I don't say
that was the one. I just think you have Kellen Moore,
who's got history with Dallas and a little bit more
and history with Dak and a little bit more again,
lack of a better word, inspiring to Cowboys fans. Yeah,
(26:39):
you know there are other guys from college which Cherry
Jones has shown an affinity for in the past that
you could have enticed to be the coach of the Cowboys.
So yeah, if you're asking me what one surprised me
the most, it's it's a Cowboys just picking a lifelong
assistant because Dak Prescott likes him or whatever the reason is.
Speaker 1 (26:58):
Yeah, it feels like because Dak Prescott likes him. Yeah,
probably send them some money as well. That's oh, yeah,
that feels like. That feels like all the exact you're
completely correct on all those accounts. Doug Gottlieb Show here
on Fox Sports Radio. How difficult will be for Detroit
considering you lose those two coordinators? And I get it,
(27:22):
Dan Campbell's an unbelievable motivator. They're all in on him.
But you lose both coordinators in one year in which
you didn't actually accomplish the ultimate goal. How difficult do
you think it is for them to get back to
how they were viewed this year?
Speaker 2 (27:37):
Yeah, it's not ideal, And we have the Eagles to
show forward last year. Not that Eagles were a bad
team last year. They got off to a great start
and they had that bad at the end, but Eagles
lost them both after that Super Bowl three years ago
with the Chiefs, and it showed you can't set hire
those people up the street. So what they did was
sort of bringing young aspiring coordinators that they would hope
(28:00):
to turn into the guys they lost, like and Gannon.
It didn't work out, and the Eagles went the other
way this year, right, they brought in Kellen Moore and
they paid an extraordinary sum for Vic Fangio. Yeah, it's
a growing pains. I don't know exactly, Doug. I think
they're promoting from within. There's a good culture there. I'm
(28:23):
a big fan of Dan Campbell. He's not an exits
of those guys, but you can tell there's an impact there.
They'll be back. Packers will be back, you know, Eagles
will be back. Hopefully the Niners will be back after
they were down, but those you know, Rams will be back.
I think the good teams will be back.
Speaker 1 (28:43):
Okay, Aaron Rodgers, Yeah what now?
Speaker 2 (28:48):
Two years ago this time, there was one team the
Packers were moving on and there was one team and
that team just told him no. So if you look
at it from that way, now you have a more
compromise player, older coming off a brutal injury a year
ago I just don't see it, and I think he's
got to decide whether he's going to play. But it's
(29:09):
all related. If he finds out no one wants him
to play, then he's not gonna want to play. So
the question to me is who's out there? And we
can all come up with the Raiders or the Steelers,
But is that what they want? You know, is that
really what they want? Or would he come into a
(29:31):
situation where he was kind of competing or kind of mentoring. No,
I don't see that. No, So I just think there's
gonna be speculation about teams. But I keep going back
to two years ago. Nobody jumped in, nobody except the Jets,
and the Jets just told him go away.
Speaker 1 (29:54):

(30:50):
what's the the press, Doug.
Speaker 5 (30:51):
We start out looking ahead the next NFL season, and
bet Online has released odds on who the Philadelphia Eagles
will face and the season opener, likely scheduled on the
Thursday of Week one of the NFL season. I'll even
give you a date on that in just a second,
but I can't tell you this. The Detroit Lions right now,
(31:12):
the team with the shortest odds plus one fifty for
Detroit as the season opening opponent. The Rams are at
two to one, Commanders three to one, Cowboys four to one,
Bears six to one, Broncos nine to one, Raiders nine
to one, and the Giants are twelve to one.
Speaker 1 (31:38):
Those names again work real quick.
Speaker 5 (31:40):
Lions, Rams, Commanders, Cowboys, Bears, Broncos, Raiders, and Giants.
Speaker 1 (31:46):
I think it's gonna be the Commanders. I think it's
gonna be the Commanders. I think I think they hear
let me. Can I give you my thinking as y please? Okay,
Jane Daniels. I think like everybody thinks, like, this guy's
got a chance to be superstar, right, Heisman Trophy, great
rookie year, the Commander's Redskins football team whatever, huge following,
(32:11):
huge following their rebirth is like, and you know some
of these NFL guys that wants to get their chests like, yeah,
we got rid Dan Sneyder, so we did rug. We're
good now, right. I think Commanders is the is the
easy call. It is divisional right off the shoot, but
they haven't that has that happened sometimes with schedule wise,
I see that being the one that they go with.
(32:33):
What do you think?
Speaker 5 (32:34):
I think it's a solid selection. I don't think that
the Cowboys, despite only having four to one odds, are
a possibility that would be.
Speaker 1 (32:42):
That's a that's a America's Game of the Week on Fox.
Speaker 5 (32:45):
There's no way. Yeah, that also, and I think it
would be a crappy thing to do to the Cowboys.
When you have a new head coach, there's obviously going
to be intrigued with that. But I don't think that's
necessarily fair to put them in that spot of having
a nationally televised season opener short week. You're adjusting in
Brian Schottenheimer getting his opportunity to be a head coach
(33:06):
for the first time. It's also why I don't think
you're going to see the Bears in that spot. I
do think that the Rams could be a possibility. They
have the second shortest odds at two to one, but
I just don't think that Dallas has any chance. I
just don't think it would be fair to Dallas in
that case.
Speaker 1 (33:22):
I mean, obviously Lions would be interesting. I mean Broncos
would be interesting as well, rookie quarterback Sean Payton, et cetera,
et cetera. But I think it's if I had to
guess Washington, then Lions, then well.
Speaker 5 (33:37):
Lat This past season, the season opener was a rematch
of the AFC Championship game between the Ravens and Chiefs,
and Doug it could be the same thing with the
NFC with the Commanders and Eagles. All Right, we got
a war of reports going on in the National Football League.
Mentioned earlier Ryan Burr of the Big Ten Network was
(33:57):
how they were crediting Ryan Ryan space like golf channel. Yeah,
he's been Golf Channel, and I think that's why he
got this report out of Northeast.
Speaker 1 (34:05):
Florida from Pittsburgh.
Speaker 5 (34:07):
And maybe he got it from Pittsburgh. Ryan Burr reporting
that the Steelers reached out to the Jaguars about a
possible trade involving Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence sounded like his
source was on the Jacksonville side of things. DK Pittsburgh
is reporting that no such call took place between the
(34:28):
Steelers and Jaguars about Trevor Lawrence.
Speaker 1 (34:30):
My thing would be like, why wouldn't you call? You know,
you have new new front office there, new head coach,
and you know they signed to a big contract, they
need a quarterback. Why wouldn't you wouldn't you call it?
And you know Ryan's I have no idea Ryan doesn't
I've known pretty well. It doesn't strike me as somebody
(34:52):
who make it up, But it doesn't mean that it
was the GM. It can be anybody like, hey, are
you guys happy with Trevor Lawrence? Would you consider you know,
moving And they're like, no, he's our quarterback, or let
me think about it. So there's all different levels of
a call was made. How deep did it go? Did
you go like, well, what would the value be? If
(35:15):
you're the Steelers, you should be making those calls. Find
somebody who they're unhappy with. You know, hey, you're not
happy with that guy? We could sure use one.
Speaker 5 (35:24):
It's interesting because Ryan did go in a little bit
more depth on his social media Twitter account x account,
saying that Pittsburgh would include a first and second. But
the draft is in Pittsburgh next year, So do you
really want to trade away your first round pick when
the draft is coming to your town. I think that
should be the least of your worries if you're trying
to improve your football team.
Speaker 1 (35:44):
But yeah, Pittsburgh strikes me as the team least likely
ever to tank.
Speaker 5 (35:49):
Yes, and I also think that I like if Pittsburgh
did do that, and at least they're thinking outside the box.
To your point, Doug, this is because this is a
team that seems to try to do things. Maybe the
easy way. It was easy to bring back Ben Roethlisberger
when he couldn't throw anymore. I know, taking Kenny Pickett
in the first round may not have felt easy, but
(36:10):
it wasn't like it was a top five pick. It
was later on in the draft bringing in Mitchell Trubisky
to compete when he had zero snaps in Buffalo. I
think he had six, actually, But I think those seems like, oh, yeah,
let's he learned in Buffalo. Let's bring him in Like those,
All things seem like easy things to do, all right, Doug.
In the NBA, they're scrapping the three point shoot competition
(36:31):
between Steph Curry and Sabrina Enescu that debuted last year.
Caitlin Clark denied and turned down an opportunity to participate
in the event.
Speaker 1 (36:40):
Yeah, that was grand opening, Grand closing.
Speaker 5 (36:44):
Genesis Invitational this week at Torrey Pines not being played
at Rivera Country Club because of the wildfires, and Tiger
Wood's also not playing. Follow him in the passing of
his mother. You'll notice, Doug, that all of the pin
flags for this tournament are white with the whole number
on it, except number seven in just a plain white
flag in honor of Koltita Woods, who passed away last week.
(37:05):
She was a devout Buddhist. The number seven, seventh hole,
and the color white significant in the religion. That's how
they are honoring Tiger's mom this week.
Speaker 1 (37:15):
I had no idea of the number seven. I do
like the number seven. There's also that funny Friends episode
about the number seven. And that's the press. This is
the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports. Train to download
the podcast. We'll talk to you tomorrow. The Doug Gotlieb
