unmatched selection, fast free shipping, free road as protection, over

buying should be okay. The Aaron Rodgers sweep steak has
begun in uh what I think is a little bit unique.
(00:48):
Is a release statement from Aaron Glenn and Darren Moogie.
Last week we met with Aaron to share our intention
was to move in a different direction at quarterback. It
was important to have a discussion now to provide clarity
and enable each of us the proper time to plan
for our respect to futures. We want to thank for
his passion and dedication about the organization and wish him
(01:10):
success moving forward. Woody Johnson blah blah blah. I want
to thank him, blah blah blah. I want to thank
him for his time. So I mean, look, I can
tell you I've worked at three different places. I'm not
sure I would say my tenure at one of them
(01:32):
was a stirling success and perfectly or maybe didn't go
the way I wanted to go. Part of free agency
and essentially he was a free agent, right. I know
he was traded to the New York Jets, but he
had to approve of that trade. But part of it is,
anytime you acquire a new player, there's about a thirty
(01:53):
three percent hit rate of getting what you expect, especially
in free agency, when a guy's out on the market
and anybody can have him and he picks one place,
it's like a thirty three percent hit rate, Like, well,
that sounds it should be better than the draft. The
draft is know about fifty percent hit rate based upon
all studies. So it's not that it's not crazy, okay,
(02:20):
that this didn't work. It was. It was less successful
than Brett Farve's tenure with the Jets, but much like
Brett Farr's tenure, it was it was tainted by an injury.
Right farv was nine and three and then tore a
biceps muscle and insists on keeping playing through it. Aaron
(02:42):
Rodgers tours kill. He's ten and four plays into his
first season with the Jets. We'll never know what this
would have been like without the injury. That's that's the reality.
I understand that if you're not in the sport, or
if you don't like Aaron Rodgers, you don't like the Jets,
or you didn't like this move, you can tell me, hey,
it wasn't gonna work anyway. Robert Sala was in over
(03:02):
his head as a coach. You know, Aaron Rodgers had
too much autonomy. He wanted his buddy to be offensive
coordinator who was in over his head. And you may
be right, but we have no idea what it would
have looked like if Aaron Rodgers a year ago had
played that entire season. Did the line look like it
wasn't good enough? It did, but the defense was better
(03:24):
and the overall vibes were better. And because it all
fell apart for a second year with the same quarterback,
even though they had acquired Aaron Rodgers in the offseason,
it became a self fulfilling prophecy that if you said
it wasn't gonna work with Robert Sala and the Jets
and Aaron Rodgers, it was so they weren't that good
this year and got exposed to such and he wasn't
(03:45):
the same coming off an Achilles ten and tear. What
would you look like last year? I don't know, and
I think, Look, that's the frustrating thing. I can tell
you that my tenures my first year as head coach,
I haven't had the nation's league scorer for two months
like my team. I don't know what we would have
looked like, but it's reasonable to think it would have
(04:05):
been better. Heck, the Detroit Lions, you know they have
guys among monross s. Brown said on a podcast that
he wants to shot the Philadelphia Eagles. They had thirteen
guys on the ir on the defensive side of the football.
Like these can sound like excuses, but it's the reality
(04:25):
that if a guy gets hurt, we're never gonna know.
I mean, I've said that about Greg Odin being a
flop in the NBA, Like was Greg Odin to flop? Yeah?
The league changed and he may not, wouldn't he likely
wouldn't have been able to evolve, but we'll never know
what his actual ceiling was because he never really had
(04:46):
a chance due to injuries. On the other hand, that
if you're fair when you're breaking it down the failure
of the Jets and Aaron Rodgers, the likelihood injury is
always greater the older you are, So I don't know
if we could have seen an Achilles ten and tear coming.
(05:08):
Who could have Literally, you plant wrong one step and
we all learned about a rupturing calf muscle which turns
out to be an Achilles ten. That's what happened.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
You know.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
I don't know that the Golden State Warriors would have
beaten the Toronto Raptors, but I think it would have
happened had Kevin rant not torn his Achilles ten in
Game six, then Klay Thompson later on where he tore
in Game five, Klay Thompson Game six towards knee. So
this signifies to me that Aaron wants to keep playing.
(05:43):
It signifies to me that the Jets did something that
I think, frankly the Saint Louis Cardinals did with Aberpools.
And what is that when the Cardinals essentially part ways
with our pool holes. If you remember, it was to
go to the Angels. The Angels reportedly weren't the highest bidder.
(06:06):
The Marlins were, but the Cardinals had had a pool
holes for the earlier part of his career, and they
made an offer, a six year, one hundred and whatever
you know, ninety million dollar offer in the preseason and
said that's our offer, take it or leave it. He
left it. At the end of the year, he said
(06:27):
he wonted a nine year, ten year deal. They offered
him three additional years at six million dollars at the
back end, which if we look at the last three
or four years of his tenure with the Angels, the
Cardinals kind of nailed it right. It was an increase
in money, It was a lot of money. It was
more money than ever played anybody, But at the back
end of it wasn't this huge lump sum like the
(06:49):
Angels with thirty million dollars. Even the year after he
stopped playing that tenth year he got thirty million dollars
to just be some sort of spokesperson for the Angels.
It's a ridiculously bad contract, But the point is that
the Cardinals did make legitimate offers to Pools so that
they can rest easy going, like, look, we wanted him,
(07:10):
We wanted him at a reasonable market value. He didn't
want to do that, so he went. We shake hands
and say it was a good run. The Jets probably
didn't truly want Aaron Rodgers back, but if they even
can consider talking about him coming back might be a
new offense. Gonna have to be at all OTA's and
(07:32):
all the workouts, gonna have start doing Pat McAfee. And again,
it's a lot like Pools because it's very possible. It's
an offer that they can tell everybody around, Hey, we
made an offer but knowing full well, and Aaron Rodgers
knows full well, just like Albert Pooles knew farewell. Because
they came below what the ask was or what the
(07:54):
expectations were. It was an offer that they knew he
had to refuse. Everybody knows the quote from the Godfather,
get him off.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
I can't refuse.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
But with the Cardinals, did the pooholes with Aaron Rodgers,
With the Jets of Aaron rodgerss make him an offer.
You know he's gonna refuse, but you can always go
back to your fans and go, look, we want him back.
He just wouldn't commit to go into all the OTAs.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
This is the best of the Done dot Leap show

Speaker 1 (08:24):
What up would you? Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio

dot com Sway tire buying should be got a great
second hour of the live radio show. Andrew Brandt will
join us. Of course he's a former executive with the Packers.
And yeah, that was probably an oversight of me. I
could have picked the Packers to could a Super Bowl.
(08:46):
Just a lot of unknown there, and they struggled in
their division. This year they won out of their division
against what I thought was a pretty soft schedule. But
we'll see, we'll see. Two losses to the Eagles doesn't
turn out to look so bad because they were very
competitive with the Eagles. But the Eagles are of course
Super Bowl champions, and so a lot to discuss. Anyway.
(09:09):
A reminder, if you like listening to us, you can

Speaker 4 (09:38):
Don't call it a throwback Thursday.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
Okay, jasetu, what's the year worth not calling it a throwback? To?
Speaker 5 (09:46):
Thank you, Doug. I'll take it from here. It's raining
with a temperature of forty seven degrees outside.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
The traffic will be next.
Speaker 5 (09:56):
Now I want you, guys, ought to go back twenty
nine years twenty nine Okay, what were you? What were
you doing in nineteen ninety six?
Speaker 1 (10:07):
I remember that, ye very freshman at Notre.
Speaker 5 (10:10):
Dame nineteen ninety six. This week the NBA All Star
Game happened. Now I'm going to read you the names
of this All Star Game, and you're gonna think, WHOA
How cool was watching sports back then?
Speaker 1 (10:26):
Ohly?
Speaker 5 (10:28):
Short answer, short answer, very cool. Michael Jordan was the
MVP of the All Star Game. He led a team
with Scottie Pippen, his running mate Shaquille O'Neill, Anthony Hardaway,
Reggie Miller came off the bench, Glenn Rice came off
the bench, Alonza Morning, but Grant Hill was the lead
(10:50):
vote getter that year. Now it's important this little piece
of information. Dan loves uniforms and he will confirm this.
The ninety five ninety six season was the final year
and the Pistons traditional uniforms, you know that they won
those titles with. And then in the fall of ninety
(11:10):
six the Pistons donned maybe the worst uniforms in the
history of sports and they wore those for about five
five years before going back.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
Uh, Dan Byer, can you confirm or deny.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
They were They were top they were bottom five I
think in worst uniforms, and they were so bad that
now people will look back and because they're unique. And
that's the thing.
Speaker 1 (11:36):
Was that the tiel Ones with the Piston thing they
kind of like was like almost a megaphon horse.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
It was Yes, what was the horse about zeg like
a I think it was a horse.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
Yeah, it was a horse. What was the must I
don't understand what the horse was.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
I think it was a mustang. And then it had
the like a.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Ford Mustang yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
Must They weren't the Mustangs. They were the pistons. Pistons
like fire. Why not have like a visualization of firing.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
Pistons, because they did have it formed into what was
like pistons or exhaust exhausts.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
Again, those are exhausts, they're not pistons. I couldn't fix
a car. I can't. I can change a tire. I
can change my oil. Man, I don't need to change
my oil right now because I have a electric car.
But that's not the point. Point is I change a tire,
can change my ole. I don't know where the pistons are.
I do know what pistons look like. And those are exhausts.
Who I there? There has to be like a story
(12:30):
on this one. You know, this feels like a boardroom
where's like, hey, guys, got an idea. Okay, you're gonna
change uniforms, Okay, kind of spice them up. Pistons ones
are very average looking. What are you guys thinking? We're like, good,
love it? How about some flames? Okay, keep going, because
the pistons fire. I get it, I get it, I
get it. We're gonna throw a horse in there. Why
(12:51):
Mustang Mustang's cars, cars pistons, okay, or this is there's
no bad answers? What else?
Speaker 3 (12:58):
Sergy fire synergy synergy pipes?
Speaker 1 (13:00):
Are we sponsored by the Ford Motor Company with the
Ford Mustangs? No? Why are we throwing a Mustang? Just
go with it, all right, to mock it up for
me and I'll approve it. And what happens is there
were a hundred bucks and at some point somebody goes,
I don't know, just I like teal used the teal
ones and that's what they went with.
Speaker 5 (13:18):
It was awful. But Grant Hill that day in the
All Star Game had fourteen points. And I just wanted
to tell you the the team that made up the
West Sean Kemp, Jason Kidd, Kuide Drexler, Charles Barkway, Hakeem Olajuwan,
Gary Payton coming off the bench, It's just like a
who's who of the Hall of Fame. Karl Malone and
John Stockton came off the bench. My goodness, those are
(13:41):
all Hallmers, right, incredible, every one of those.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
With everyone Kevin Garnett second Team All Rookie. Remember took
Garnett a little bit in a little while to Yeah,
have to burst onto the scene in at ninety five,
ninety six, ninety six, great year for me, last year
of the freshman year in college, and then the next
(14:08):
semester was early and in the sophomore season when six
of us moved into a house, four bedrooms in one bathroom.
That was amazing. That NBA season you mentioned it, Jason
was some of the all stars. But in fact, that
Sonics team from the downfall of them losing to the
(14:29):
Nuggets a few years earlier in the first round, I think.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
Wen Kevin mctumba had the ball.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
Yeah, the Utah Jazz obviously made it to the finals
the next two seasons, but I was in the camp
that this was going to be the start of the
run for the Sonics, that this was If we saw
both Sonics again the next year, it wouldn't have surprised
me that young core of Sean Kemp and Gary Payton.
And it did not happen, and that was there, one
(14:59):
and done in that series. And yeah, a lot of
great names from the mid nineties, but I thought that
Sonics team was going to go on a run and
it never happened.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
Nineteen ninety six was the year that the Florida Gators,
I know was in ninety seven, but they were national champions.
So the head ball coach, Steve Currier Burrier, well, yeah,
Dan Waterble is our quarterback. Hell And then of course,
in the I think the ninety seven Rose Bowl, which
was the ninety sixth season, Arizona State beat Ohio State.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
That is not correct. Ohio State came back to beat
Arizona State Ohio.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
In the ninety six season, But the ninety seven Rose Bowl,
Ohio State came from behind to beat Arizona State.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
Yes, exactly. Ohio State was a nine nothing on Michigan
at the half of their game, and then in the
second half a cold day Columbus it happens, Sean Springs,
the best cornerback in college football that season, slipped on
the turf, allowing Ty Streets to score about the sixty
eight yard touchdown and Ohio State was dealt their only
(16:02):
loss of the season by Michigan. Again, you wonder where
my disdain is again, if they win that game, they
are national champs because they beat Arizona State in the
Rose Bowl.
Speaker 1 (16:11):
Is that a John Cooper team?
Speaker 3 (16:12):
It was a John Cooper team. It was one of
his better teams, not his best team. His best team,
I felt was two years later, actually in nineteen ninety eight,
but oh so close to a national championship that year.
And then it was Florida and Florida State, as you said,
in the Sugar Bowl, playing for that national championship.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
Do you guys remember what rule was changed in college
football in nineteen ninety six? It changed ninety five ninety
six first season overtime.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
I was just about to say, could you hear it?
Can you meet about to say for time?
Speaker 1 (16:42):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (16:42):
No, Google back replay, great job, hold.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
On, let me let's do it again. So it again.
Do you guys know what rule was changed and implemented
in the ninety six season? Now, the rule was actually
changed in ninety five overtime? Yes? Yes, all right, thank you,
good job, and it nailed it great over ties six
Final four? What was significant about ninety six Final four? Dan,
I know you're gonna probably answer this one, Jay stew
(17:06):
or Sam. You want to take a shot.
Speaker 5 (17:07):
At Jim Beheim leaves that leads his orangeman back to
the final game.
Speaker 1 (17:11):
So that's that's part of it.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
John Wallace got paid by the way. John had an
amazing run.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
And that was whether the cus is in the house,
Oh my god, My god, and the cuss in the house.
Oh my god. There's a famous video of the late
great Al McGuire dancing with with those guys who we
I was a Notre Dame. We're the worst team in
the Big East, and we led at the We were
up sixteen at the half at the at the Carrier Dome,
up six with a minute ago and lost. And then
(17:39):
we're up I think at the half in the Big
East Tournament in the first round the next week and
lost again. Anyway, But that's what was significant about it.
There was Dante Jones, a different Dante Jones than you
think of play was Mississippi State's best player with Eric
dan Pure and Dante Jones was famous for I think
fifty two credits obtained to get him eligible in the
(18:02):
summer before he played for Mississippi State. That's called the
magic pencil theory. But what was significant about it was
that's the last final four played in an arena meadal Lands, Yeah,
the Meadowlands Continental Airlines Arena, same thing. Jimmy Hoffa buried
somewhere around there. Anyway, that was the last time they
played the Final four in an Arena and they played
you know, Syracuse being there, Kentucky being there, unbelievable ticket.
(18:25):
I know this because we had four tickets, sold them
and paid for our entire trip and watched it at
a bar across the river in Manhattan.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
You Mass the other team with Marcus Camby and caller Perry.
Speaker 5 (18:36):
Yep am I tracking this right? The current head coach
of Kentucky played on that team.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
Yes, Now, Mark Pope, who's the captain on that team?
Speaker 1 (18:44):
Right? And John Caliperry who has then went on to
become the coach at Kentucky later in his career, and
the coach of the Nets was the coach of U
Mass also in the final four.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
But got it. What a year it was in golf.
I know you guys, just remember what happened in nineteen
ninety six.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
Can who could forget what happened in nineteen ninety six?
Speaker 3 (19:02):
Tell you what you're right now? The US Open won
by Steve.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
Jones, Oh, Steve Jones.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
The Open Championship Tom Layman is lone major. Then the
PGA won by Mark Brooks definitely pales in comparison to
what happened on Sunday at Augusta.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
Can you remember what happened Sunday Augusta.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
You can remember because Greg Norman collapsed on the final day,
allowing Nick Faldo to claim another Green jacket. It was
the collapse of all collapse. And when we talk about chokes,
you may you may talk about Scott Norwood, you may
talk about Bill Buckner, but Greg Norman's name, especially after
(19:48):
nineteen ninety six, completely fixated a top after he blew
that lead at Augusta on Sunday, it was and with Norman,
what made it so crazy was because he had had
other heartbreaks and other majors before. But then he goes
out and shoots seventy eight, blowing the six stroke lead,
(20:13):
and that put everything in pen like if he wins
that maybe we're not looking at him like we do today.
But that that cemented everything, that put it all right.
Greg Norman six stroke league couldn't get it done at Augusta.
Speaker 1 (20:29):
That was the year that the Braves lost to the
Yankees in the World Series. Correct.
Speaker 5 (20:37):
It was the first year of the Yankees dynasty, the
first championship year. Jim Laert set the big home run
off Mark Wallers. A lot of people thought that was
the summer of the Yankees, But Sam I would say,
most people think it was the summer of this.
Speaker 1 (20:55):
Oh but that didn't But didn't.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
He karina, I'm doing the dance right now.
Speaker 1 (21:01):
Oh yeah, this is going to ruin so many people's
day because they're gonna be dying around. They're gonna go
home and go up. What is that earworm? I get?
He I got to.
Speaker 5 (21:17):
It's spent twenty five weeks above the charts in the
summer of ninety six other songs that we picked from
that year. Dan loves the song it was actually.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
Playing, so we just keep playing Macran. It annoys people
the rest of the day.
Speaker 6 (21:33):
People still they still play this in arenas and stadiums,
and people still do that stupid dance. It's very family friendly,
it always.
Speaker 1 (21:41):
Is it, even with the rolling in the hips after
It depends on how you roll your hips and watch
the thrusting. Yeah, well like two pumps, okay, three pumps.
That's a penalty. But I'd like to do this. I've
done this like periodically just to get people an earworm.
What are their songs?
Speaker 5 (21:58):
I think Dan appreciates it's a song. I'm just guessing.
I hate to try to predict what Dan Leckt and
what he doesn't music wise, But Mariah Carey, I think,
did a duet with Boys to Men. It went something
like this. Where does this rank on your list of nineties?
(22:19):
Like R and B boy band stuff?
Speaker 1 (22:21):
Down?
Speaker 3 (22:21):
It is? It is a really good song. And it's
funny because I never considered Boys to Men as a
boy band. I consider them as an R and B group. Yes,
I didn't consider them into the factory of what in
Sync and Backstreet Boys were, And honestly they were there
before that, just like I don't look at a new
addition as a boy band, but it was in the
same realm. So, I mean Boys to Men was huge
(22:45):
and they really could sing, so to have this this
was another this is another mega mega hit. But this
was after End of the Road, right this?
Speaker 1 (22:54):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (22:55):
Yeah, so like this is like, I mean, this is
Deon Sanders joining the Cowboys, That's what this is. Like
that it was like just because they were both at
the at the top of their games at that at
that point, and yeah, I like this song.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
I feel like this was used in a movie, wasn't it.
Speaker 6 (23:11):
It was very big at school dances too, I mean
Macara hands on hips Sam. Yeah, it makes you keep
that balloon or that beach ball between you and your
dance partner.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
But I didn't. Didn't the boys didn't boys to men.
Speaker 6 (23:24):
They all met at like a kind of an artist
musical prep school in Philadelphia.
Speaker 2 (23:29):
I think that's where they started, right.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
My sister lives Motown, Philly.
Speaker 6 (23:33):
Back again, Maybe we'll come back with that next break,
but they all my sister lives pretty close to where
these guys all started in this uh, this musical uh
in creative prep school there in Philadelphia at South Philly.
Speaker 5 (23:48):
I'll leave the I'll leave the movies for Doug. He
loves the movie part of this. But the spice.
Speaker 1 (23:53):
Crossroads, that crossroads that year meet you at the crossroads.
That's the one I remember from Bone Thugs in Harmony.
That was a big Bone Thugs.
Speaker 6 (24:01):
Ban Danie'll appreciate this well, hold on out bone Thugs
and Yeah. Crossroads is number seven on the year end
Billboard Hot one hundred Bone Thugs and Harmony Back to you, guys.
Speaker 5 (24:17):
The Price is Right celebrated their twenty fifth year in existence.
Dan Bob Barker was the host.
Speaker 3 (24:23):
Of course, M.
Speaker 5 (24:27):
Carrie strugg led the uh led The American Gymnastics team
to a gold That was a big deal.
Speaker 1 (24:34):
That was the ankle thing was at her? Who was
it had the ankle thing?
Speaker 6 (24:37):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (24:37):
Bad ankle? Yep, bad ankle?
Speaker 5 (24:39):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (24:39):
Is there? Ever, there's never been a conspiracy theory on
that one that she was actually okay and it was you.
Speaker 5 (24:43):
Know, I think there was a blood in the sock?
Or am I confusing that with another sports moment. Prince
Charles and Princess Diana call it quits after nearly four
years of separation, and of course it's a year out
from Princess Diana's Faithful Day.
Speaker 2 (25:03):
Any movies stick out before we break?
Speaker 1 (25:05):
Andrew Brandt, Yes, yes, from the Big Movie. Gerry McGuire
was that year Who's coming with Me? What's that's? That's
also you had me from Hello?
Speaker 6 (25:19):
Uh but here's this Doug Jerry McGuire coming in at
a distant eighteenth at the box office that year, there were.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
Some what's also Brussel's Sports Show?
Speaker 2 (25:27):
Oh yeah, I love Jerry McGuire, Jane.
Speaker 1 (25:30):
Or sling Blade that he Shlean Blade, Bob orton.
Speaker 2 (25:35):
Top four films Independence Day number one.
Speaker 1 (25:38):
That was back when Will Smith owned the fourth of July.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
I mean that was that was the Summer Mega Block.
Speaker 3 (25:44):
I just feel that it's only fitting. I'm sorry, I'm
gonna make the executive decision to cut this off because
Andrew Brant's coming up next. But we did not talk
about the NFL. And that was the year that the
Green Bay Packers finally broke through.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
In the Greason Hey Packers.
Speaker 3 (25:58):
Topping the previous dominance of the Cowboys and forty nine Ers,
Brett Favre than in Reggie White, leading them ultimately to
Super Bowl thirty one where they beat Bill Parcells. But
that season Brett Favre MVP was the season of the
Green Bay Packers starting that dynasty in the National Football League.
Speaker 1 (26:15):
One more thing, let's get back to movies. That thing
you do was the Tom Hankslick. I only brought it
up because the beginning scenes were supposed to be in Erie, Pennsylvania.
It was actually filmed in Orange, California, in the Orange Circle.
And to those of you know, Orange is my hometown.
That's where I matriculated through elementary school in middle school,
(26:36):
when I going to three different middle schools before going
to high school in Tustin. Just to the South Swingers
also that year, Swingers that year and I think the
English Pitiant won Best Picture, which is another one of
those movies that everyone says was really good and no
one I know actually watched. There Yep, yep, there you go.
(26:57):
And uh, that's don't call it a throwback Thursday.
Speaker 4 (27:00):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation yet. Catch all of our shows at foxsportsradio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
Stuck got leap show Fox Sports Radio. We got don't
call it a throwback Thursday coming for you next hour.
Quite positively my favorite thing. Ooh yeah, So the Lakers
dropped their second game since Luca Doncik has come over.
You go back to last night. They lose, but they
(27:34):
lost to the Utah Jazz. Okay, this is a team
that they smoked at at Crypto and they lose to
on the road. Brody James did have a career high
nine points, right, nine points. But they play their bench extensively,
and I mean you got to ask yourself, Okay, so, like,
(27:54):
what should the expectations be. Luke only played twenty three
minutes as he's working himself back kind of into game shape.
That shouldn't be a shock to anybody. They go and
trade for they only go and acquire Alex lenn who
is on the buy out market. Dalton connect plays kind
of bizarrely, so right like after he was traded, that's
always super weird. Kind of felt like a bullpen night
(28:14):
right where they played everybody. I don't know, I just
you look at that team and it's one that they're
gonna try and use KloCo and Jackson Hayes's rim protectors
and Alex lim sums as a rim protector. But they're
gonna have nights where they score one hundred and forty
hundred and fifty points. The question is can they give
up less than that? Can they give less than that?
(28:40):
You know, they shoot a ton of threes, they'll be
spread you all out right. I mean they're they're four
starting perimeter players combined to take what was it to
thirty twenty six thirty one threes? It's a lot. So
(29:00):
it feels like they're trying to on some level copy
the Boston Celtics. The difference is the Boston Celtics are
so much better defensively at so many spots. Stut Gottlieb
Show here on Fox Sports Radio. So uh, byer, let's
get back on your editorial hat, your switch hat's gonna
take that one off going on? There you go, you
get that hat. Doesn't this kind of signify what Jason
(29:24):
and I have been saying, which is, and I think
I don't know if you feel the same way, which
is like there's the WNBA and then there's Caitlin Clark.
These they may coexist, but it's completely different how one
is looking like looks like without the other.
Speaker 3 (29:43):
Yes, absolutely, And last year's event, actually I think went
off better than what anybody expected. It was an exciting time,
but it just shows you the NBA's plans. And just
to me, it seemed because we were in the midst
of the Caitlin Clark fever at that point at Iowa,
this had never been done before. So hey, let's try
(30:04):
to expand this. Let's try to make Caitlyn Clark a
part of it the next year. And then when she
said that she wouldn't, especially Doug when the All Star
Game is in San Francisco, so it's in STEP's backyard.
So you could make it a case that, hey, this
is a fun time, and it made sense to reunite
him and Klay Thompson as teammates. On something that would
(30:25):
make sense. But when she's not there, you're not going
to just pull another WNBA star, apparently because they obviously
don't have the cachet of Caitlyn Clark. I will also
say this just on your point, where you and Jason
are correct and I was wrong. I thought there would
be more hype for the women's game this year, and
I don't think that there is now Tonight we have
(30:46):
USC and UCLA one versus six and a big ten matchup.
But I thought there would have been a little bit
more carryover from last year, and I think I was
wrong with that. We don't see it as I guess
as much.
Speaker 2 (31:00):
CLA is a.
Speaker 3 (31:00):
Dominant team, and I don't know how many people outside
of those following even realize that UCLA is number one.
Speaker 1 (31:08):
I don't think anybody knows. I we're the only show
that talks about it. I think we're the only show
that talks about it because Sam's super interested in it
and Jason kind of likes crapping on it. That's really good?
Is that Is that fair? Guys? And I would also
look at I would also credit the NBA from this perspective, Dan,
(31:30):
this was the boringest NBA season on record, and then
Luca got traded and now I'm I'm interested right now
the soap opera could do? Is that? Can I keep
reeling me back in? You know?
Speaker 3 (31:46):
Yeah, Like I thought there would be more hype with
Juju Watkins and Paige Becker's and the stars that.
Speaker 5 (31:52):
That they're going to carry on the mantle. You know,
they were going to this uh you know, the what
is that the tides that raise all boats. Everybody was
gonna get a higher platform. We were gonna be just
as interested in these college stars as we were Kate
and Clark. And that's completely falling on its face.
Speaker 1 (32:16):
I told you he takes a special amount of glee
in it. It's really it's a little diabolical, But I
mean I enjoy watching him have such joy, I know it.
Speaker 3 (32:26):
Yeah, especially when Sam's got that little smile on his face.
And it's not that Sam agrees, it's just that Sam
something triggered in his brain.
Speaker 6 (32:34):
Oh, we're talking about it, and Doug, I'd say you
made a good point, possibly on another podcast, just one. Yeah,
that Juju made an Elite eight run last year and
some people know who she is, but like the first
tier two years of Caitlyn Clark. The scoring was similar
to juju or vice versa. But she needs ever last.
(32:56):
I know, inside the Big ten she was getting little
more well known than by yes junior and senior year
she was a national name.
Speaker 2 (33:01):
Maybe that's what you needs.
Speaker 1 (33:03):
Yeah, I mean she's a final she's a final four,
and she needs, you know, a couple of spectacle performances,
and then she needs like a following, like a thing.
I mean, this is honestly the Caitlin Clark thing. And
I get everyone says that Taylor Swift because her dad
had money, he bought a bunch of albums on her
first album, right, and that kind of triggered this thing.
But what what what I think w n b A
(33:25):
women have to understand is it's really simple. It's it's
not always about who's the best. It's about who people
like the most and want to watch the most. I mean, really, honestly,
that's the the Steph Curry thing. Don't get me wrong,
Steph Curry is an all time great, but he's never
(33:46):
really been in the stratosphere of lebron because physically he
there's he here's so many things he can't do with
the other end of the floor, right, But Steph Curry
is wildly popular, I think there are while Lebron is
respected and popular. Lebron has an equal number. You know,
(34:09):
He's got plenty of people that don't like him, but
they just don't like him because they don't think he's
Michael Jordan. But if you asked honestly, like you know,
who's better, Like, oh, Lebron James does more more of
a basketball for it's like not really not really close,
you know, not really close. But what Lebron struggled with
this is the same thing as the year that Steph
(34:30):
Curry was an unanimous MVP. Lebron was like, look what
Steph's done is unbelievable. No one's done it and win
seventy three games. He's the best shooter we've ever seen.
But when you talk about value, like, yeah, Lebron's actually
right on this one. Oh you know. And so that's
(34:52):
the thing with Caitlin Clark. Is she the best player
in the WNBA? No? No, But she's so so incredibly
popular that fighting it or or making the WNBA as
popular to the level of Caitlin Clark is a complete misconception.
Let's welcome in Mark Medina. He joins us, he's can
(35:14):
we cue the Mark Medina music? There we go? Ah yeah,
uh huh. Mark Medina joins us, He's our Fox Sports
Radio NBA insider. Here's the question, Mark, what is the
actual All Star game format? I don't know. I'm not
gonna say, not gonna watch, but tell me what they're
(35:35):
trying to do to get my attention.
Speaker 7 (35:37):
Yeah, okay, So I'll break it down. They got four teams.
One team is represented by Charles Barkhe. These are International Stars.
Kenny Smith's team are the Young Stars. Shacks teams are
the Ogs. Chuck and Kenny's team is going to play
each other, and then Shaq's OG team is playing the
winner of the Rising Stars team. It's first to four,
(36:00):
and then the winner of those two teams will play
in the championship game. And it's first to forty.
Speaker 1 (36:06):
And it's they're back to back to back, back to back.
Speaker 7 (36:09):
Yep, all on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (36:12):
Okay, all right.
Speaker 7 (36:14):
Well, I mean it's like excited about it, Doug.
Speaker 1 (36:19):
I just I mean again, whatever I mean they're trying
to make it. I guess the idea is, hey, anytime
we have a score to play for that guys are
going to compete, but they haven't competed in years. Why
would they compete now?
Speaker 7 (36:34):
Yeah, I mean, look, we're going to be preaching in
the choir here right now. I'm with you. I do
think that the games, the games are going to be
better this season because it's something that's new. But to
your point, you may recall in twenty twenty All Star weekend,
in honor of Kobe Bryant and his tragedy, they decided
to implement a new rule where they try to reach
(36:54):
a target score no shot, you know, no clock in
the fourth quarter. That made it for better competence. That
lasted only three years, and then these last few seasons
have been normal, terrible All Star games of zero defense
and layup line. So I think in the short term, yeah,
we're going to see a better product, but hey, that's
not saying much. And b I don't know if it
(37:15):
really lasts beyond the season, because it's very much reeks
of the desper parent trying to plead to their kids
to either be on great behavior and get some good
grades and if you do, we'll give you lavish gifts.
So I think it's very much a short term sugar Spike,
and that's a.
Speaker 1 (37:32):
I like the Sugar Spike Doug got Leeb show here
on Fox Sports Radio. Okay, have you been able to
figure out whether or not Nico Harrison had called anybody
other than the Lakers.
Speaker 7 (37:42):
Yeah, that is fascinating because I think that he definitely
gauged other teams. But you know, Rob the Lincoln has
sided publicly that one of the things that he's really
grateful for was that he and Nico, you know, kept
these conversations secret, so to speak. So I don't think
it ever reached the strong level where there were negotiations
(38:03):
with other teams, but I do think that there was
kind of a soft gauge with it. But I think regardless,
you know, I appreciate you outlining some of the nuance
with the trade because Anthony Davis has been a really
great player. Obviously he's hurt now, but he's had a
better injury history. But I think, you know, league wide,
there is a strong feeling that, Okay, if you are
(38:26):
going to do this deal, like, why couldn't you extract
at least a few more draft picks from the Lakers.
Speaker 1 (38:33):
I agree. I mean, I think that's that's the big
question in the league. It's not that he was okay,
what what about that? That's the other part is you
mentioned Anthony's like and Dave's pretty good and he's a
two way player. I just is the reaction as much
surprise inside the league as there is from fans.
Speaker 7 (38:56):
Well, I think you know, when the trade went down,
we all had the instinct. I know, you had the
instinct of physics a hoax, and then what we may
call spralized it was real. There's been a lot of
negative criticism toward the MAVs leak wide about this. Obviously,
you know, for it to reach the level where there's
protests and security concerns, that's over the top. But you know,
(39:18):
I think the prevailing theme is even if you buy
into the idea that the Mavericks are doing this, mid
concerns on whether they want to commit to Luca or
he gave signals that he wanted out, which he strongly dismissed,
or concerns about his conditioning, and the overwhelming thought of
is this is that for out of shape he is.
(39:39):
Luca has still been a generational talent. He guided them
to the finals last year and he's twenty five years old,
So you know, from some perspective, when Kerry Buss, the
late Lakers owner, traded Kobe and Shack, or traded Shack
cap Kobe, part of thinking was, yeah, Shack doesn't keep
himself in shape and his career is going to be
on the decline. But at that point he was at
(40:00):
the latter part of his career. So I think the
thinking is, Luca's still been playing at a great level,
even though he's on the best of shape, He's still
longing a great workload, and he'll start take car and
he'll start taking care of some of those other nuances
when he needs to. But you know, Anthony Davis again,
great player. And I know that Mavericks fans are going
(40:22):
to roll their eyes here because he's hurt and he
might might be out for at least a month. But
this whole idea that he is fragile and injury prone, Yes,
he has that injury history, but since January of twenty
twenty three, he hasn't had a major injury. You know,
that involved him missing a lot of weeks. So you know,
this injury happened the course of the game, and obviously
(40:44):
things can happen.
Speaker 1 (40:46):
Jimmy Butler, how's that going to go over at Golden State.
Speaker 7 (40:51):
Well, so far, so good. You know, I don't buy
Draymond Green's optimism when he told me last week when
they were in LA that you know that they're gonna
win the championship. But I think that given where the
Warriors were at, given where Jimmy Butler was at, it
was both a desperate and pragmatic move for both sides.
There wasn't much of a market for Jimmy and an
(41:13):
extension with the Warriors, they were able to still find
that sweet spot that. Yes, they did have to give up,
you know, some good assets, Andrew Wiggins, a first round pick,
some good rotation players with Kyle Anderson, Dennis Schroeder probably
stretch only because he didn't fit in well there. But
they didn't have to give up any of their young
core or multiple first round picks. So I think the
(41:33):
calculus was they saw even with Steph Curry still playing
reasonably well this season, they're not. They're ceilings playing at
best and missing the playoffs at worse. So this is
at least a shot in the arm. I don't put
them in NBA title contention, but you know, they're a
team in the first round that teams wouldn't want to
have to play, but I think that's their sailing.
Speaker 1 (41:55):
Okay, So who is really entitled contention? That's the question,
right the Celtics. I think we're pretty we know pretty well,
like Oklahoma City. The records great, they're a year older,
but last year they flamed out early in the playoffs
the to the Mavericks. So who actually are the teams
that are in playoff contention? Forget about regular season records?
What people actually really believe?
Speaker 7 (42:15):
Yeah? I think Eastern Conference Celtics because defending champs, they
have most of their core back. Yeah, they've gone through
some struggles, but most of its championship hangover stuff Cleveland
because of how great of a start they've had. They've
really clicked on every single part of their offense with
their four all stars. Western Conference, and the feeling is
(42:35):
that it is Oklahoma City and everyone else. Yes, I
guess you still give a fighter chance to the Nuggets
because of Nicoley Jokic, But I just don't trust their
you know, lack of depths. With Oklahoma City, They're not
a team without weakness. Yes, they're young, they have some
rebounding issues, but I think Shay, he's an MVP candidate.
(42:56):
You know the fact that they played really well without
chet Holmgren and for some games about Isaia Hardenstein's shows
that their wing depth on both sides of the balls
really good and with their size that has given them
a lot of versatility. So I do give the edge
to all those three teams I mentioned, But unlike the
Warriors dynasty years, it's not a feeling of it's predetermined.
(43:19):
This is the NBA champion. Everyone's just going through the motions.
It is wide open, but there's definitely odds for those
three teams to win it all.
Speaker 1 (43:27):
Stut Gottleib show here on Fox Sports Radio. Let's circle
back to the Mavericks. Jason Kidd took a moment to
himself last night. Instead of answering questions, he looked and
sounded exhausted. What's how like what's his status with Nico?
Speaker 3 (43:46):
Like?
Speaker 1 (43:46):
How down would this plan? Is?
Speaker 4 (43:48):
He?
Speaker 7 (43:49):
Well, he's saying all the company line things right now.
I mean, Nico made it clear in his press conference,
even if he hasn't been as available as much as
fans have wanted him to be when the tray went down,
he made it clear that He's the one who made
the decision, so all signs point to him. Jason Kidd's
been supportive of it. Now we know obviously in this business,
(44:10):
people say things publicly and people say things privately. But
I haven't got any hint that Jason's not on board
with it. But as far as where their status is
and you know, any security, they're going to be evaluated
on this, not by this season, but you know next
few seasons from now, and there's no hiding behind it.
This is a huge gamble that they made. You know,
(44:31):
if I were in their shoes, I wouldn't have done it.
But you know, I do understand the thought process going
into this season. There are a lot of people I
talked around the league that thought that the Mavericks are
a one hit wonder when they got to the NBA Finals,
So it wasn't sustainable. Now, in fairness, their criticism wasn't
about Luca. You know, some of those same executives are saying, hey,
lukea is my favorite to win MVP. It was just
(44:53):
the idea that the West is so loaded. Even though
they improved their supporting cast, they don't think it's quite enough.
Kyrie Irving's later in his career. Kway Thompson's not the
same player as he was pre Achilles and ACL injury.
But you know, in its totality, there was a feeling,
you know, this isn't sustainable, so they decided to make
that decision to lean in on defense and see where
(45:14):
it goes. And you know, the only skepticism I have
is that this windows very short term. Ad Kyrie Clay.
They're on the later parts of their career where obviously
Luke is a lot younger. But you know, we'll see
what happens. Obviously, but nothing will happen after the season.
If any changes happened, it would be you know, future
seasons from now.
Speaker 1 (45:35):
Mark, thanks so much for joining us. We really appreciate you.
Enjoy All Star Weekend.
Speaker 7 (45:38):
Doug appreciate you as well. And I will never decline
your intro music on like this three point contest stuff.
Speaker 1 (45:45):
Mark the funky Cold Medina, longtime NBA reporter, our Fox
NBA inside. It's like his walk up music. Let's get
you to Dan Byer and get you a quick are
you Dan? I did the update? I am I my fault.
I got a little confused there, I was. I was
so when was the last time I can remember the
(46:07):
last All Star Game I actually watched. I mean it,
don't get me wrong, Like, have I been walking through
an airport? Have I been changing the channels and seeing
the All Star Game? Sure? But like actually sat down
and watched. It was magic Johnson was at ninety three.
He hit a fade away to end the All Star Game. Like,
that's it. I haven't watched ever since.
Speaker 2 (46:25):
You haven't watched in thirty two years?
Speaker 4 (46:28):
No?
Speaker 2 (46:28):
Wow, No, not even in passing Like I.
Speaker 1 (46:32):
Said, in passing, like I'm flipping around, like is it
the All Star Game? Okay? Next? You know It's like
it's like when you're watching Seinfeld tonight.
Speaker 2 (46:42):
Eh, yeah, I'll stop on this channel.
Speaker 1 (46:44):
Nope, I've seen this one.
Speaker 2 (46:45):
Yeah you know.
Speaker 1 (46:46):
Nope, Nope, don't like that episode. Actually, yeah, it's it's
something I used to Seinfeld? Is that not it? I'm
trying to think of what a TV show I used
to like and now I turned on IM Like, eh no,
Now I was never a Save by the Bell guy?
Were you guys saved by the Bell? Damn? Were you
saved by the Bell? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (47:07):
I enjoyed it. I think I enjoyed it more. Maybe
when I was even older and more on the repeats
than when it actually was airing. But yeah, what was it?
Was it funny or just an easy watch? Yeah, it's
just an easy easy watch. Maybe the maybe the Bright Colors?
I had no problem was Saved by.
Speaker 6 (47:29):
The Bell A lot of people forget to Save by
the Bell was only on for like three or four seasons.
It didn't have that long over run. But in syndication
and in you know, reruns, it's just it's lived on
and on and fate.
Speaker 1 (47:39):
Wait wait, wait, okay, I want, I want. What do
we think? Don't look it up? Okay, don't look it up.
How many seasons? How season? Sam? You said three or four?
How many seasons?
Speaker 3 (47:50):
I'll say four? Does this count that Miss Bliss season?
Like that's how the show started?
Speaker 1 (47:56):
Wait? What?
Speaker 3 (47:57):
It was not originally called Saved by the Bell l
The show was actually built around the character of Miss Bliss,
who then was faded out, and it was more about
the six kids in the school.
Speaker 6 (48:10):
I don't remember Miss Bliss. I know mister Belding as
one of the adults and in the teens of course.
Speaker 1 (48:15):
But yes, it was a spin It's considered a spinoff
of Good morning, Miss Bliss consider to spin off. Okay, again,
I don't know anything about missus miss Bliss.
Speaker 2 (48:23):
I don't remember that at all.
Speaker 1 (48:25):
Yeah, four seasons is the answer.
Speaker 5 (48:27):
So just to track that conversation, Dan offered substance that
was fact, and then Doug confirmed it with a Wikipedia entry.
Speaker 1 (48:38):
Yeah, pretty much works.
Speaker 6 (48:40):
What's more perfect though than four seasons because it's like
you go freshmen to senior I mean maybe that was
just a perfect.
Speaker 1 (48:46):
You know, come with no reclassification.
Speaker 6 (48:48):
The College Years though, I watched The College Years. I
remember this Saved by the Bell movie when they're someone there.
It was Zach and Kelly getting married in Vegas and
they're all trying to get there and like someone's cars
breaks breakdown and yeah they they they and then I
think there was Saved by the Bell the New class.
So there was quite a bit of the culture that
continued after the original.
Speaker 1 (49:08):
Saved by the Bell College Years was one year, so
apparently they were they were dropouts. They were dropped.
Speaker 6 (49:15):
The funny thing is is a c Slater was supposed
to wrestle at Iowa, but then they all decided to
go to the same school, which was like California State,
just a generic and so they're all together back together again.
I think, although who was the smart who is a C.
Slater's girlfriend Jesse Jesse Span. I think she went off
to like Princeton, but she would like make appearances or something.
Speaker 1 (49:36):
So is that Elizabeth?
Speaker 3 (49:38):
Yes, well, she wanted to go to.
Speaker 2 (49:42):
Stanford.
Speaker 3 (49:43):
Stansbury is what they call. Okay, yeah, yes, yes.
Speaker 2 (49:48):
Stansbury West Coast.
Speaker 3 (49:50):
Then they hired the guy from the Max to be
the guy from Harvard to show the lady from Stansbury
that Span was Stansbury material.
Speaker 1 (50:00):
I stepped into Saved by the Bell World and Dan
is going like chapter verse, like if you thought you
knew about golf tournaments, the Iowa was amazing.
Speaker 3 (50:09):
We have the Iowa recruitment, I think in the system
because I put it in Slater's at the Max. The
head coach at Iowa walks into the Max. Slater goes,
that's the head coach at Iowa. C Slater offers him
a full ride on the spot and then says, I'll
see you in the fall. It was the quickest recruitment
in sports history.
Speaker 1 (50:26):
It's exactly how it works. But yes, that's how it works.
Although I will say if it was Iowa wrestling. It
actually would work that way, right, either Iowa, Penn State,
Oklahoma State. Right, it feels like those are the ones.
It would work out that way. But yeah, that's not
how it works, but maybe, I mean, I don't know,
maybe it does. What's weird is they can use Iowa,
I guess because the state's name, but they can't use
(50:48):
uh Stanford because the private school. Is that really?
Speaker 3 (50:51):
Yeah, maybe they didn't get the rights, but Harvard was used,
but was us.
Speaker 1 (50:55):
Yes, it feels like Stanford would be very happy with
their name being used.
Speaker 3 (51:00):
Maybe because they read this script and didn't like how
they looked like uppity and snooty by denying Jesse Spannel
that they said, no dice on this, we will not
lend our name to this episode.
Speaker 1 (51:11):
Okay, maybe Saved by the Bell is not the appropriate one.
I was never a huge Saved by the Bell guy,
but not that I was ever a huge All Star
Game guy. Maybe it's the Cosby Show, right, Whereas when
The Cosby Show is out, it was literally the most
popular show on television, and now the Cosby Show comes on.
I don't even know if it runs in syndication since
(51:32):
it does. Yeah, right, you're like, yeah, this was not funny.
Speaker 3 (51:35):
Mainstream cable Chick wasn't really funny.
Speaker 1 (51:39):
Would like to talk to you about the things that
you're saying on the show.
