(00:40):
big NBA previous second half of the season starts tonight.
Got a plethora of big games tonight going on, and
of course was kicked off last night with the unofficial
beginning of the second half the Lakers and the Hornets.
But before we get to that, just a little bit
off this game after watching Luca last night and look,
last night was an incredible embarrassing night for the Lakers.

(01:01):
These last two games they've had against Utah to close
the the first half and then last night against Charlotte.
These are two teams that are combined record is twenty
seven and eighty, and the Lakers find a way to
lose both of these games like that is inexcusable. It's
in I mean, to lose games like this with Luca
playing and it's absolutely an excuseable. These teams are winning

(01:24):
like four games away from home and and Charlotte comes
in and does it last night. Like for all the
great things I think that are headed forward for the
Lakers and how great this offense can be. Look, I'll
tell you right now, I'll look. I think the Lakers
can finish second in the West the rest of the season.
They can win enough games. This offense is gonna get
humming along where they can score one hundred and thirty

(01:44):
points a night. And it looked pretty easy in it.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
Hey, as long as they don't look like Sandy out
of a long game POLLI like last night, I mean,
my goodness.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Well that can while that can happen, I mean clear
that this is what it is. Because you're gonna see
the guys like Austin Reeves, who got ejected from game
last night for arguing a foul call.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
Hey, don't curch the referee.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Uh, don't brush him on your way back. Yeah, so
they missed him last night, But it's gonna be guys
like Reeves and Ruiy Hatchamoor that see the floor opened
up for them. These are the shooters that Lebron wants.
I say nothing but great things for this offense. But
then you watch a game like we did last night,
and you watch Luca and you go, wow, it's really
gonna take a little bit of time. Because the thing
for Luca is that now seeing him three times with

(02:25):
the Lakers, and the Lakers look like they're doing the
right thing and holding him accountable for his weight and
staying in shape right, Like, he can't avoid that anymore.
Cat can't avoid it because it's such a front burner topic.
You have to be in shape, you gotta be able
to play minutes, JJ Reddick said before the game last night.
No minutes restrictions for Luca. He's got to be able
to play.

Speaker 3 (02:44):
And then you and I sat in the studio as
we were watching, We're tragging. It's like, come on, he's
got to get past thirty thirty in my flour Oh yeah, yeah,
come on.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Come on, you're gonna play more than thirty minutes. Suddenly
it's hey, JJ, why is uh? Why is only playing
half the game? I thought there was no minutes restrictions.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
You were really hoping for the blowout, so that wasn't
going to be an argument for him.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Yeah. Well, also I was open for more because now
I'm feuding with JJ.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
Reddick truly, so I had to show, yes the stan
what do we got? We got Charles Woodson, Charles wood
reasons unknown.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yeah, Charles wood Freason's unknown shut your.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
Hand and said he didn't know you and kept staring
you in the eyes as if like you approached him
in a dark alley somewhere.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Oral Hrscheizer as you meaner, Which we've talked about that.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
And that is well, but that's new to the show
and the conversation even I have, yeah that you just
missed starting pitching as a necessary tool to spend money
on it while he was on hold coming on as
a guest.

Speaker 4 (03:37):
And now JJ Redick, who gave.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
You the Twitter handle in response to a question from
Dan Woiki of the LA time.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
And the shout out of the press conference right before
the All Star Game. Yeah, so so now I'm feuding
with JJ. I'm living rent free and JJ Reddick so great.
But while they're doing the right thing, because no matter
what went on in Dallas, right, Luca wasn't going to
ever get into was never going to listen. It's one
thing when you're drafted by a team. You come up

(04:04):
and you're given everything that they gave to him. You
call the shots. Yeah, you can tell me I need
to get in shape, I need to be able to
mess that. Yeah, I'm not gonna listen to you. So,
no matter what that probably wasn't gonna happen.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
Well, and I'm playing MVP ball and we're happened to
the vitals, Like, what do I need to change? It's
like Kyler Murray conversation we had for years when everybody
started making fun of video games. Oh, he was a
top ten baseball draft pick. He's the number one overall
pick in football. He's a winner at every level. Why
do I need to change?

Speaker 2 (04:34):
It's a it's a case of whatever was gonna happen
with the Lakers, it wasn't gonna happen in Dallas. Now
there's a change of scenery. They got his attention, You
got traded from a team you didn't know you're gonna
get traded. From that big payday you thought you were
going to get is now out the window. The three
hundred something million, you've lost a one hundred million dollars
if you want to sign a long term deal this summer.
So all of that, you've gotten his attention. So okay,

(04:57):
I like that, right, And the Lakers don't seem like
they're gonna make it excuses for him. They don't want
him to sort of slip his way into the lineup
and see when you're comfortable. No, it's like, okay, let's
get going here because you're going to be the future
of this team for the next ten years. But it's good.
It's gonna be longer than I thought before. The Lakers
really get rolling because watching Luca last night, this is
the big takeaway from last night's game, is that it's

(05:19):
not that he's not playing hard, because he is playing hard,
but yes, he does get winded, he does get tired.
His first basket of the game was because he didn't
get back on defense and Lebron throws a length of
the court pass because Luca missed the layup, stayed under
the basket while while the Hornets fast break and then
Lebron got the rebound threw it down to him for
a layup. Like okay, so there's your Luca basket right.

Speaker 4 (05:40):
Right, that decreem.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
Yeah. Uh so while there there is that, it's he's
playing hard, but it looks like he's playing at three
quarter speed. And and that's the thing. And that's where
he had trouble last night. He shot horribly. He clearly
doesn't have the rhythm on his jumper. They were leading
him alone for threes where there was nobody even within

(06:03):
ten feet of him. It was the old like the
Caitlin Clark video from Iowa a couple of years ago,
where one of the players on the other team had
the ball the three point line and she just dismissed
her with her hand, going you're not gonna shoot it,
and you're not gonna make it. We're not gonna guard
you there, So like what do I do? Like there
was a couple of times they did that to Luca, like, yeah,
you have the ball in the Yeah, whatever you want
to do, man, go ahead shoot it. And he couldn't
make it. He's had trouble, you know, being able to

(06:26):
create space to get his fallaway, and that's something that
you're gonna need more time for that because it looks
like he's just playing at three quarter speed. The final
shot of the game last night went to Lebron twice,
and and JJ Reddick talked about it, and I have
no problem with Lebron getting the final shot because he
had a great fourth quarter. He had a better game.
Luca had not had a great game shooting the ball.

(06:47):
But I don't know if Luca was even a possibility
at that point because could he really create his own
shot if he needed to. At that point, he has
having trouble. Like I said, he's playing it looks like
he's at three quarter speed. So if that's the case, yeah,
you gotta go to Lebron for the shot at the
end of the game. So that to me, that's the
biggest takeaway from Luca since he came to the Lakers.
Going forward as that boy, it's gonna be a little

(07:08):
bit of time, because really he's got it's gonna be
a bit before he gets back to being the Luca
that we were used to over the course of the
last few years.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
Yeah, coming down the wire, our buddy mark Stein that
joins us at the steinline, Doncic will not play tonight
on medical advice as they play Portland later on to
the larger picture they have the they're tied for the
hardest schedule remaining. Take that with a grain of salt.
But as we sit here getting ready for the second
half in earnest, that is something that plays in right

(07:38):
schedule will not be kind to them overall. We know
the defensive liability that he is and you watch LaMelo
ball lick his chops and just take him to the rack.
Time and again, we watched it right off the jump
a couple of times, trying to get that explosion right,
little rock step and then trying to get into the lane.

Speaker 4 (07:57):
Well he didn't.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
He didn't have the explosiveness getting to the rim, left
it short a couple of times. The jump shot obviously off.
Lebron disappeared in the third quarter but came back. He
was six of eight in the fourth before taking those
two final shots, and that's going to take some time,
some rhythm. But Luca learning to operate without the ball
in his hands was kind of sad. It's like the

(08:18):
kid that shows up at the dance and everybody's kind
of mingling a little bit like the boys and girls
always went to the walls on opposite sides of the room,
and we're hanging out and just having conversations with each other.
Luca looked like the kid standing in the middle that
wanted to get a party started, but nobody wanted to
join him. So like he's standing off with the side,
like the ball is supposed to come back to him
through me, right right, No, now, I'm just kind of

(08:40):
standing here and looking wistfully as Lebron gets the shot
and then gets the other shot again, not that he
should have taken it in this scenario, and eventually, you know,
you'll see some balance there as he gets his sea
legs and has better games. But yeah, there were just
times yesterday as we were watching it, and it's one game,
it's a blip. The opponent hurts coming out of the

(09:01):
break right after that loss to Utah to have all
the energy around it, have a home game, and then
the fall so flat late like they played terribly, and
then an eleven point lead at halftime and Luca for
the night was still plus thirteen. There's the number that
makes no sense. Having watched that game from start to
finish as we did, they almost still plus third.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
He almost had he almost had a quadry. He almost
had a five by five by five by five by
five by five games. Be careful, points, assists, rebounds, fouls, turnovers.
I mean, you don't get five by five by five
by five by five by five by five games all
that often. And he almost had one.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
He had those five turnovers early, so you can take
the positivity and well he cleaned it up as the
game war on.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
How about that, I'll tell you, man, so that that's
where that's where the immediate future is going to be
for Luca because he just isn't He's just not ready.
He's just not ready to be to be that guy yet.
And it's going to be a little time. As you said,
he's sitting out tonight's game, which clearly shows you that
maybe he's not he's not nearly at the conditioning they
need him to be at. So, yeah, the Lakers are

(10:06):
still gonna be great. I said, they still can finish
second in the Western Conference, but it's gonna be a
little bit more time until he's back being the Lucavo.
But when that hits, I'm telling you, man, watch out.
You're gonna see games where Luca and Lebron and Reeves
are are are are totally ninety points just between the
three of them, Like it's gonna it's gonna be that
kind of night. Because if if Luca can get back,

(10:26):
when he gets back to being that guy, can't say
if it's when he gets back to being that guy,
they that opens up the floor. The Lakers suddenly are
even are are five times more dangerous than they were
with Anthony Davis because because the way floor spacing is
now with the positionless NBA, where're you gonna go? You're
gonna have Lebron on one side, you got Luca on
the other side. You have shooters you need to close

(10:48):
in on to commit big shots like this is this
this Laker roster construction now really is gonna be a
big piston and they're all coming together. But it just
needs Luca to get to the point where, hey, dude,
you know you need to do some running. You know
you need to need need to do some cardio. Man,
you're ready to play. That's no more than thirty two
minutes a night. Gotta have those.

Speaker 4 (11:07):
Sprints at least between the three point lines.

Speaker 3 (11:10):
But if it does come to fruition, right your bold
proclamation about there, you know, one hundred and thirty a night,
and you said that the day of the trade was
going down. Uh and and that's where you're staying. They
don't really play a lot of defense. So I can't
wait to see how ratcheted up the over unders get these.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
Hey, would you win one threats? The way when you
win one thirty one twenty eight, that's just just as
much winning one thirty to ninety five.

Speaker 4 (11:32):
No, that's it right, Fine, Look all you care about
is the w s.

Speaker 3 (11:35):
We can get into the per ratings and everything else
when guys are fighting for contracts. Uh. And then we
we have the giant notebooks like Scott Boris would bring
to the table. But yeah, it's gonna be a fun watch, right,
It's a fascinating kind of twist and turn, particularly as
you still have people in Dallas behind the scenes trying
to poison the well. Oh, by the way, we forgot

(11:56):
about this story. It's like all the books I tell
you about every year that come out about the eighty
five Bears. Oh yeah, hey we haven't we need some
some other revenue.

Speaker 4 (12:05):
It's like we'll do another card show.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
But yeah, yah, yeah, we haven't put out an update
to the book in three or four years about the
eighty five bears.

Speaker 4 (12:11):
Let's do that.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
Any of you guys got any stories, any stories while
I was returning these pants and no, so like it's
that kind of thing.

Speaker 4 (12:20):
Say the same thing here.

Speaker 3 (12:21):
We got everybody in Dallas, like anything else we could
use to merch his work, ethic and the kind of
guy he was around here. Anybody anybody shoe in the back?
What do you got? That's kind of where we're at
in this Dallas thing, right. The latest of well, it
wasn't really a risk injury said he wasn't in shape.
He's like, all right, so you willingly lied about the
injury report. You know when we're talking about the billions

(12:44):
upon buildings. Did you see that number about betting in
the month of January. Man, we're talking billions of dollars
out there, and now you got team saying, yeah, no,
we lied about it. He just wasn't in shapes, Like,
so he really wasn't hurt or what are we talking here?
So Mavericks have some other explain and denew Well, look,
what did.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
I say from the beginning, right, is that the Mavericks
didn't just wake up one day and decide to trade Luca.
Right Like when the trade went down on that Saturday night,
it was, oh, what are they doing? They did not
think this through. What is Nico Harrison doing? Who is
Nico Harrison. They didn't just wake up and say we're
gonna trade Luca today. He's been with the team for

(13:23):
now six years. Obviously they want certain things from him.
If they're gonna give him three hundred million dollars in
the off season, and the fact that they couldn't get
him to stay in shape, take care of his body,
they thought he would break down. What did they do?
They got out from under Luca a few months before
they had to, and they wound up getting an All
NBA player and Anthony Davis around him. Now, yes, he

(13:45):
comes with his own injury situations obviously, but that's the
best you're gonna get, right, That's the best you're gonna get.
The Mavericks they know Luca better than anybody else, and
they were still okay trading him. So this wasn't something
that just came out of nowhere. We don't know what
we're doing. They didn't think that he and we didn't
know that he was even gonna stay because he wasn't
someone that they remember. There was the reports that he

(14:07):
might not even stay, would want to go someplace else.
So if they're not gonna give him money and they
don't think he wants to stay, and he's not gonna
listen to them when it comes to taking care of
his body, what do you expect him to do?

Speaker 3 (14:19):
Hey, dude, calories and they still took the beer out
of his hand.

Speaker 2 (14:23):
Come on, good, they're gonna make a move. They're gonna
do this. They didn't just wake up and trade Luca
for no reason. And now slowly you're starting to see
these reasons leak out. Oh, Luca really isn't in shape. Oh,
you know, the injury thing maybe was an injury. Now
all of a sudden, he can't play back to backs.
Luca's having trouble with this. He's got to find his
rhythm again. There's all we're starting to see. Slowly. Oh,

(14:46):
the Mavericks just had to get past the initial what
are you doing? We have no confidence in you too. Oh,
now I sort of see the method to the madness.
It was a shocking trade. It's still shocking three weeks later,
but now you're seeing Hey, okay, I think they had
their re to do it, and you're gonna see more
of that going on. Exit out about a Fresca exit
Swallen Dome. Jason Smith Mike carbon in for Doug Gottlieb Today.

(15:07):
Coming up next is the rest of Major League Baseball
really mad at the Dodgers. Are the Yankees in more
trouble than they want to admit at the beginning of
spring training? John Paul Morosi, Fox Sports won MLB Insider,
longtime friend of many shows here on Fox Sports Radio,
comes up next with the inside dirt on all of it.
This is the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 5 (15:29):

Speaker 2 (15:42):
Fox Sports Radio. The Doug Gottlieb Show. Jason Smith Mike
Harmon in for Doug Today. First day of exhibition baseball
and the Dodgers lineup is completely overrated. They're losing to
the Cubs in the fourth inning. Dave Roberts went to
the bullpen in the second inning. This is obviously not working.
My Carmen. This is the worst lineup money can buy. Absolutely,

(16:05):
just a really tough start to the spring. Six runs allowed,
You've already got your starting pitcher who's gone over and
he's giving any interviews in the middle of the game.

Speaker 4 (16:13):
I mean, this is a problem.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
That's baseball, you know, I really, I honestly I thought
this was gonna work out great. But this clearly there's
problems with this Dodger team.

Speaker 4 (16:22):
Well, you know what the important thing is though, what
was the what was the line today?

Speaker 2 (16:26):
I don't know. You're the one that bets on stuff like,
you know, exhibition baseball, so I thought, you know, you
would know I.

Speaker 4 (16:31):
Normally have that in the back of my hand. I don't.
I don't have that one right now.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
You bet on all the sports that you really shouldn't
bet on, like you really would have been on exhibition face.

Speaker 3 (16:39):
Well, yeah, I'm gonna been on baseball. I learned by
watching Vegas Vacation. Okay, so shut up? How many figures
am I holding up?

Speaker 2 (16:50):
Look, the big story coming into coming into this season now,
and we had you know, Rob Manford has weighed in
on this the other day, and now players are starting
to talk about it. The Associated Press has a story
on it today. Uh, the Dodgers spending has a lot
of teams upset because we can't spend like they can,
and it really creates an imbalanced playing field. And the

(17:14):
Dodgers able to get all these stars and defer money
and get guys that don't have to like go like
Rookie Sasaki, who not only wanted to come to the Dodgers,
but they don't have to pay him. He's a free
free agent, right He's making six million dollars a year.
That's nothing. So I get that that teams are a
little upset. And Rob Manfred's comeback was, well, I'm not
gonna blame the Dodgers playing the system. I mean this,
this shows you how much he sucks as a base

(17:37):
He has always sucked. The gods the commissioner, and he says,
I'm not gonna blame it, Blame the system. Dude. You're
in charge of the system. Man, You're the one that
negotiates it. You're the one. You're the You're the commissioner
of baseball. You can't suddenly just be oh, I'm only
the commissioner of baseball. What do you want me to do?
He has played favorites the entire times as he's been commissioner.
He hates he hates the game, he hates the players,

(17:59):
and he the owners, and even within that substrata, there's
certain owners he loves more than other owners. The Dodgers
have created an imbalanced playing field, which I get. And
they're not doing anything illegal, right, They're doing everything. Hey, look,
you would want to build your team the best way,
but here are owners who are upset, and he's saying,
what do you want me to do. I'm not going
to blame the Dodge all because I like the Dodgers.

(18:19):
I like their ownership. The Dodgers are great for baseball.
They're a tried and true heritage team. But when Steve
Cohen bought the Mets a few years ago, after the
first year, suddenly, hey, we're ratcheting up the taxes when
you go over the salary cap because we want to
stop Steve Cohen from outspending everybody. Wait a minute, wait,
why is that? Because the Mets were clearly not worthy
of being a team that can come in and outspend,

(18:41):
even though anybody should be able to do it. I'm sorry,
I'm sorry that my owner is worth more money than
your owner. But every team should be able to do it.
But no, no, no, Cohen comes in and after year
it's okay, here's a speed limit in at two hundred
and forty seven million, two hundred and ninety five million,
just to stop Steve Cohen from spending all this money
because it's the Mets. If it was the Dodgers or
the Yankees or the Red Sox, he would be saying

(19:02):
what he is now. But because it was the Mets,
oh I got to stop them. But oh, the Dodgers
doing it. Oh yeah, that's no problem with them. That's
why he sucks as an owner. He's always played favorites
and and and he's been overt about it. And this
last statement that he's had about the Dodgers and and
and and teams being upset, I'm not taking any responsibility
for it. I'm never gonna blame the Dodgers. When that's
a when that's a big quote saying I'm never gonna

(19:24):
blame the Dodgers, like, what do you really expect him
to do? Right? And now players today have talked about
It's been a big topic at string training the last
few days, and the players are saying, hey, I don't mind.
I like the challenge. I like it great. This is
what I expect the players to say, Hey, let's go
out and beat them, right, doesn't doesn't guarantee they're gonna
win a championship. Of course, the players are gonna say that.
I get that from the players. But for the fans,

(19:45):
and and for and and for the the owners, like,
wait a minute, we want to think that we can
come into the season and have a chance, right, have
a chance in some free agents. We just we just don't.
And and I'm not saying that Rob Manford has to
suddenly change things to to uh, to weigh down the
Dodgers to stop this. It's just, hey, be fair. Let everybody.
Let everybody spend whatever they want to spend, and don't

(20:06):
worry about keeping some teams down and other teams not.
If your owner isn't rich enough to spend a lot
of money on free agents, okay, then maybe you should
have known the team. Right. So I mean, but make
it it should be a free market, right, you want
to make it a free market. And he's only shown
that he's okay with it being a free market under
certain circumstances. And that's why that's why he sucks as
a commission.

Speaker 3 (20:26):
Well, in the end, he's beholden to thirty thirty ownership
groups and some have longer legs and skin in the game.
And the new guy coming in and upsetting the apple
car potentially, Yeah, you're gonna get a bunch of a blowback,
rush back. And they went and they put the coin
tax in whatever whatever the official name is on the books.

(20:47):
That's how it's known. I wish more players would say
something like this. They're paying everybody that seems like the
way whatever whatever they're doing.

Speaker 4 (20:57):
Yeah, it's not a baseball player.

Speaker 3 (20:59):
That's Joe Burrow to talking about what the Eagles did
and what the Rams do and whatever else.

Speaker 4 (21:05):
Same thing here for baseball players.

Speaker 3 (21:07):
They all need to point at their ownership groups and say, hey,
let's get let's actually get in the game here, let's
figure out some of this deferred money. How can we
structure things to where we're a destination. To your point,
if you can't play in the game and don't have
the requisite funds on hand by which to do so, great.
But a lot of these guys are using it like

(21:27):
a piggy bank. We've got, you know, businesses that are
run over here, and then we play some creative tax games,
and then we claim we lost money, even though you're
getting one hundred and fifty million dollars minimum.

Speaker 4 (21:38):
Just off your national revenue.

Speaker 3 (21:39):
That's not even talking about selling hot dogs, parking spaces
and helmet nachos.

Speaker 2 (21:46):
So helmet nacho.

Speaker 3 (21:48):
I knew I could get you there. But all of that,
I mean, that's all more revenue flowing in. But without
a floor to say, hey, you know what, you dirt
bags at least need to spend a couple of dollars here.
What did we have if we had this offseason where
you had ten teams just sat around, what did you do?
I took a four month vacation. Really, what did you
do to try to better the teams?

Speaker 2 (22:08):
Like?

Speaker 3 (22:09):
Eh, you know what, we changed up the color scheme
on our minor league squads. I think that would racing
stripe looks pretty good. I mean all of that to say,
you know you've got the top teams, go ahead and
spend the taxes in place. It's gonna be applied to
any team that gets up in and around those thresholds.
I'm sorry that the Mets were the guinea pigs in
this format, but as we recognize this. Look, if you

(22:32):
have a clamoring and this is where Baseball's union comes
into play, because we always talk about how powerful they are,
right and with long standing agreements. It's not like suddenly
you're gonna have a hard salary gap come in. Nobody's
voting for that, so you've got to go to the
other parts. So yeah, if you're the other owners and
you're ticked about what the Dodgers are doing, guess what.

(22:53):
As a group you stand up because if there are
a bunch of little guys, you go voltron on their ass.
And now you're fighting back because you have more votes.

Speaker 2 (23:00):
Boo boo, I'm not fair. I'm just gonna play favorites,
putting my thumb on the skame.

Speaker 4 (23:06):
You just didn't like my response.

Speaker 2 (23:07):
No, it's what he does. That's what he does. Yeah,
he's not gonna give you a job in the organization.
You're not gonna become the deputy commission of Voting Baseball.
He's not gonna do that.

Speaker 3 (23:17):
No, I got I got like twenty years on the
radio of stuff going after him.

Speaker 4 (23:21):
Were you kidding, hunk a metal?

Speaker 3 (23:22):
I mean, look look at what he did even with
the Astros like, yeah, whatever I mean, we got we
got guys that might get voted in the Hall of
Fame in the next year or two were singled out
as cheaters and all of this, say what pedal did
that pay?

Speaker 4 (23:35):
None? All right, they had to give up a job
for a year. Yay, all right here we are.

Speaker 3 (23:39):
So yeah, Rob Manford, I I don't disagree with your
thesis statement of Rob Manford sucks. I just wouldn't say
I'm gonna caveat and caveat it out a little bit
to the wider discussion of you need you want to
fix baseball. It's the the rest of the ownership groups
that need you know, a I don't know backhand.

Speaker 2 (24:00):
Too. That's my response to you. Boooo Rob manfred Uce
think he doesn't get to act unilaterally. Yeah, I have
the owners that I like on my side, and the
Dodgers are big owner. The other ones I don't care.
I don't care about the Pirates and the Royals and
the Ring What do I care about those owners for No?
I just care about the Dodgers and the yank I
just care about them so much.

Speaker 3 (24:20):
Well, but if the Pirates would suddenly spend some money,
I mean, their big scheme to be relevant for the
next thirty years was to say, hey, we'd really like
that Paul Schiens card, so if you pull it, hey,
we're gonna give you seats to thirty years of Pirates games.

Speaker 2 (24:35):
We're just come on, man until he's a free aiden. Hey,
we got big second half predictions in the NBA coming
up in ninety seconds. But first, Dan Byer has what's
trending in the wide world of sports dB.

Speaker 6 (24:46):
You guys talking baseball and spring training underway with the
Cubs and Dodgers starting played today. Of course they're going
to open the regular season in Tokyo at six three
Cubs at the end of the fourth. We don't care
about the score, though, we do care about this. Dodgers
pitcher Bobby Hiller had to leave the game. Was hit
in the head by a lying drive. You could even
see the welt on his forehead, but he left after
being struck off by the baseball. Off the bats of

(25:10):
the Chicago Cub again comes up sixty three in that contest.
Yankees gave manager Aaron Boone an extension through twenty twenty seven.
The breaking news from the NBA is that Spurs star
Victor Wembinyama will miss the remainder of the season because
of a blood clot in his shoulder. The Spurs said
wemban Yama has deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder.
His condition was discovered when he returned from All Star

(25:31):
weekend after experiencing some symptoms. Mavericks forward Anthony Davis will
miss another two weeks because of his ductor strain. Team
says Davis is progressing well from the injury. No Luka
Danciz for the Lakers tonight is they were in Portland,
while Lebron James is questionable to play. Bucks forward Bobby
Portis has spend in twenty five games for testing positive
for a bandit substance. Texas and usc decided not to

(25:53):
hold spring games this year in college football, while Miami
quarterback Carson Beck at his Lamborghini and Mercedes stolen from
his home in Florida. This report from Fox Sports six
to forty host Andy Slater says that Beck's girlfriend, social
media influencer and Kings basketball player Haley Cavender had her
SCUV stolen that has been recovered. Still on the lookout
for bex Lamborghini and Mercedes, though Finally, Golf Channel says

(26:16):
the deal could be in place by the end of
the day between the PGA Tour and Public Investment Fund,
which runs live golf PGA Tours. At the Mexico Open,
Harry Hall and Jeremy Paul share the lead at seven
under guys, back to.

Speaker 2 (26:27):
You, Thanks much, Dan. Now looking ahead here we are
tonight the real big kickoff of the second half of
the NBA season, And I'll tell you what you want.
Some big names that you're going to suddenly start talking
about as the rest of the seasons go rest of
the season goes on. It's a lost season now for
the seventy six ers and the Suns. They both need

(26:51):
reboots at the end of the season. Way, did you
see the names that are going to be available in trade?
Joel Embiid, Paul Jor, Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Bradley Beal
as long as he you know, he says he's okay
with being traded. I mean, only two players with no
trade clause. And he's the.

Speaker 4 (27:09):
Smartest guy alive though that he got that in there.

Speaker 2 (27:11):
They just he's not I think his agent was smart, Like, hey,
I slipped in we wanted the no trade and they
didn't see it when I slipped in that final version,
so they signed it. So you got no trade clause. Man,
you're good.

Speaker 3 (27:21):
Did he put it in a foreign language? But maybe
in Elvin? Elvish? They put it in Elvi, but Elvish.

Speaker 2 (27:29):
Now they put it in Latin. I don't know what
that means. Oh what does it mean? Oh it means
just good luck, sees the day? Okay, great, yes side, Hey,
thanks Bradley Beal. But both teams need a reset. It's
not working. The Sixers need to get to the next
invention of what the team is. They tried to make
it work by Hey, we're going to bring in Paul
George and and Bead can't stay on the floor. He
says he needs another operation. Potentially needs another operation. KD

(27:51):
is not happy. The only reason he said he he
didn't want to be traded at the deadlines because he
didn't want to move.

Speaker 4 (27:55):
Yeah, he didn't.

Speaker 3 (27:56):
I don't want to move midseason. I got used to
these guys. I'm not leaving.

Speaker 2 (27:59):
What you mean. I gotta pack I gotta rent a
truck from Ryder. I gotta pack it up. I gotta
put on the weight belt. So I can lift my
stuff out. I gotta drive across country. I don't want.
I mean, I can't do that. I can't move in
the middle of a season. But at the end of
the year. This is gonna make free agency in the
offseason so much more spicier because now you're gonna see
at least four huge names that are gonna be available

(28:21):
that HBO knows. Hey, it's not working here in Phoenix.
You think Devin Booker's untouchable, Yeah, think again. You're gonna
see how do we re how do we revamp this team?
Because Phoenix has tried and it's not worked, and the
Sixers clearly need to rebrand with Tyree s Maxi being
their big star, and let's figure things out around it
the other way. Let's bring another mix of players, let's
get out from under Embiid's contract to Paul George, Let's

(28:44):
make something work. But you're gonna see both of these
teams struggle to even make the playing round. And when
the season ends, it's gonna be Okay, big names are
out there, Let's move on, and it's gonna be do
we want Embiid? Do we want George? Teams Fans are
gonna go. We can get Embiid, we can get you,
we can get KD, we can get Booker, Let's get
all four of them. Let's go four of these guys.
Come on, let's do it. Man, we stink, let's go.

(29:05):
Let's go. But trust me, you're gonna see this offseason
in the NBA when when you realize the teams that
are gonna want to move on from big players, it's
gonna be an awesome offseason.

Speaker 4 (29:15):
But think about it.

Speaker 3 (29:16):
We had we had that crazy week right and then
you had rumors coming out of all of the trade
deadline of you know, Jahn Morant, was he on the
block or not?

Speaker 4 (29:25):
The GM of the Grizz saying, hey, you're gonna see
it on the court. Well, that's not an absolutely.

Speaker 3 (29:30):
You can try to deny it, but it's out there
from somewhere somebody well look sources lower lowercase s. Can
always just throw stuff up and hope it, you know,
creates a little bit of a wave. We've certainly seen
that before, but it's it's it's out there, it's in
the ether. John Moran also one of those guys that
had things burglarized in December. Evidently he got hit for

(29:53):
a million bucks too, So if you're a celebrity or
an athlete, it's time to build the bunker. H go
watch parents. But all of that to say that you're
looking at so many of these big names that could
be on the market. Right, Jannis had said, I'm not
that guy. But remember when he was starting to play
chess and he was doing the I'm gonna move guys
around and I need this guy here and I need

(30:14):
that guy there. Well, he said he's not gonna go.
Dan's giving us the report. Bobby portis with the suspension,
So what does that mean for their short term success
regular season and then heading into the playoffs. I mean,
obviously he'll be rested, ready to go. But Shams came
out with his report saying, well, Giannis, if they don't win,
he might ask to go, So put him in the sweepstakes.

(30:36):
And then down in New Orleans they had already gotten
rid of Brandon Ingram. We talked about him earlier, one
hundred and twenty million dollars his new deal with the Raptors.
But was Ian Williamson already paid? But how many times
did you see his name pop up as a you
know what they'd like to just hit a hard reboot
and move him on. So you know, you add some
more names to this, it gets pretty spicy. I wouldn't

(30:56):
touch Embiid with the ten foot pole, nor I necessarily
want Zion no matter how young he is. Too many
injury issues and if you're worried about Lucas staying in shape,
how how am I then going to say, yeah, go
get Zion?

Speaker 4 (31:11):
So yeah, big names.

Speaker 3 (31:13):
I was surprised George was a dell, to be honest
with you, Jason, you know at the trade deadline. It's
something you and I had talked about on our show
quite a bit.

Speaker 4 (31:21):
But yeah, that week was spicy, and it looks like
the offseason could match it.

Speaker 2 (31:26):
Yeah, I mean, I think with the Sixers it was
more all right. We really went went to the wall
to try to make this work with the three of them,
and we're hoping that Embiid's able to come back and
be healthy and we see what happens, because all we
got to do is get in the playoffs. Right. Things
change a little bit in the NBA the last few years,
where it's gone from okay, you just want you want
to be one of the top eight obviously to what

(31:46):
you want to be one of the top six. What
you want to avoid the playing round to Hey, if
we just get in the playing round, we can still
move on. We've seen teams go from the playing round,
you know, to the conference finals without without too much difficulty,
So you know, I think they probably thought that, Hey,
let's see what happens if you had all three of
these guys on the court. Now, that's not.

Speaker 3 (32:04):
Gonna remember Embiid getting out out on the course. Like
I got my triple double. Look at me, I'm healthy,
come getting.

Speaker 2 (32:09):
Yeah, yeah, but now I need d surgery. So it's
a sign and trade for me.

Speaker 4 (32:13):
Hey, how can you disclose this?

Speaker 2 (32:15):
You're gonna see all that in the off season.

Speaker 6 (32:18):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (32:18):
Coming up next, Hey, we got a big news story
coming out of the NBA to breakdown for you Jason
and Mike and for Doug Gottlieb. This is Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 5 (32:27):

Speaker 2 (32:41):
Fox Sports Radio, The Doug Gottlieb Show, Jason Smith, Mike
Harmon in for Doug Today and before you get to
the story out of the NBA. Hey, big thoughts to
Dodger starter Bobby Miller. First exhibition game of the year
today in baseball baseball season starting, there's real games starting today.
Dodgers getting beat eight three by the Cubs. But Miller

(33:03):
took one hundred and six mile an hour line drive
off the bat of Michael Bush off his head earlier
in this game, a really scary moment, and it looked
really bad. I mean, Bush really just tattooed it and
it hit him square on the side of the head.
And somehow he was able to get up and walk

(33:23):
off the field under his own power. Now that is
really really something, because I mean this is he gets
hit flushed, there was no avoiding it, there was no Hey,
the bill of the cap is able to not know
he got hit side of the head and to be
able to stand up and walk off, that's really something. So, hey,
be all big thoughts for Bobby Miller. And obviously it
looks like he's going to be okay walking off after

(33:45):
getting hit in the head with a line drive.

Speaker 3 (33:47):
Yeah, I mean, I'll undergo all the protocols and you know,
when he next makes an appearance whatever, you're just getting
started in spring training. I mean, I did appreciate Bush's
response to it because it looked like he wanted to
go out and attend to him.

Speaker 2 (34:00):
It's like the first base Yeah.

Speaker 3 (34:03):
Like he just kind of stared down, his eyes got wide,
like the old techs Avery cartoons, wolves and whatever. It's like,
oh my what just and then eventually you know, you
play on. But yeah, very very scary moment. I did
you know close the loop though the over under was
thirteen and a half and the Cubs were favored by

(34:24):
two and a half runs.

Speaker 2 (34:25):
Okay, all right, so words eight three in the fifth
inning and you big exhibition season baseball better than you are.
You're feeling pretty good.

Speaker 3 (34:31):
Right well, I mean you got opportunity, all right. Every game,
every inning, every bat is an opportunity. There are winners
and losers repeated. But you know, back to the base
of it all, I mean, we baseball is back and
we get these scary moments.

Speaker 4 (34:47):
You remember, you're only sixty feet.

Speaker 3 (34:49):
Away from the guy and one hundred mile an hour
pitch comes back at you pretty fast.

Speaker 2 (34:54):
So again, big thoughts of Bobby Miller as he comes
back from getting hit in the head in the line
Drive first game of spring training. Now, speaking of injuries,
we got this news just in not too long ago.
While Anthony Davis is progressing, according to the Mavericks, he's
going to be out at least two more weeks due

(35:15):
to his left deductor strain. It's the first time that
they've updated his condition since the trade. They said he's
making good progress. They're going to reevaluate him in two weeks.
And therein lies the game with Anthony Davis. Is he
going to be healthy? Is he going to come back
and play? And here's the thing is that if he
comes back, if he's able to play. I realize I'm

(35:38):
caveating this with an if, But the Mavericks after making
that trade with Luca, have won some pretty big games,
right They beat Boston, they beat Houston, they beat Golden State,
they beat Miami. They were within in overtime one point
of having a five game win streak going into the

(35:59):
break after making the trade for Luca, because they lost
to the Kings one twenty nine eight, Watch out, Dallas
can make a run into the top four. And if
if ad plays the majority of the games, if he
comes back in two weeks and plays the rest of
the way, Dallas will break into the top four in
the West because this team has gotten along without Lucas
since Christmas. And they've gotten along without him. Okay, no,

(36:20):
they're not having amazing regular season success, but still without
one of the top five players in the league. They
haven't turned into New Orleans or the Wizards, where you
know they're nine to forty two. No, this is a
team that's still They're four games over five hundred, right,
they were then shouting distance of leading the Southwest Division.
And you get ad back and suddenly, wait a minute,

(36:43):
Now Kyrie is making it work. He is back to
maybe being the player he was a couple of years ago.
I mean, granted, yes, he's thirty two, but hey, having
some years of not having to carry the load, maybe
he's going to have another big springboard to his career.
We've seen this with players in the past who seem
like they're done and their their career is over. But
all they got to do is get off of the
team they don't want to play for, and suddenly, hey,

(37:05):
I'm really good. Still, don't worry about I was just
mantling it in because I don't want to play there anymore.
But suddenly Dallas is figuring things out. And if Ad
comes in and is able to play the majority of
the games, Dallas, I watched them, They're going to continue
to rise in the Western Conference. And we're all gonna
beg for a Laker Mavericks for a series at some

(37:26):
point in the plans, whether it's first round or not. Oh,
come on, man, gotta have Lakers. MAVs gotta have Lakers.
I gotta have Luca versus Ad. He gotta have it,
got to have it, and it's the NBA. I'm sure
we'll get it. But again, if he comes back, this
is not a Dallas team that suddenly, oh woe is
me without Luca. And I'm sure, as we talked about
it earlier this hour, I'm sure that played into hey,

(37:47):
can we really trade Luka Doncic and and and one
of the tipping points I'm sure for the Mavericks was Okay, well,
we not sure we want to pay him. We're not
sure he's ever gonna get in shape. He's never gonna
listen to us. We haven't fallen off the face of
the earth without him. We've been about a now for
a couple of months, and we've been able to win
some big games. Yeah, we feel a little bit more
emboldened to make this trade. I'm telling Dallas can still

(38:08):
be a really really good team. They can be a
top half of the Western Conference team.

Speaker 4 (38:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (38:12):
We look at where they're at right now, four games
over five hundred and fifteen games back, but two games
below the cut line for the top six behind the Clippers.
Right now, the Mavericks sitting ahead of Sacramento, Golden State Phoenix. Interesting,
they're two games under five hundred. Everybody had to stay,

(38:33):
So we'll see what they're able to bring San Antonio
six games under. But now the loss of Wenby for
the year, and then you've got Portland in Utah and
New Orleans bringing up the rear. So the opportunity is
certainly their health with all of these guys right because
they're without Gafford for a long time on this process.
So one of the strengths of the squad was what

(38:53):
they're front line, and especially bringing in Anthony Davis. Can
the Lakers rescind it if they wanted to Alice for
sending things, Hey, we were just getting Anthony Davis is hurt.
We were just getting in with a pre existing condition
exacerbated in that first half.

Speaker 4 (39:09):
That he played. So you know what we want, We
want our get back.

Speaker 2 (39:13):
No, no, no, I think you had it right the
first time. The Lakers might call and go, hey, we
can't get Luca into shape at all. We want a
a D. You still love Lebron, right, come on, man,
come back and play.

Speaker 4 (39:22):
Yeah side, it's fun, Yeah, either side? Do you want it?

Speaker 3 (39:26):
Do you want it back? But yeah, certainly the chaos
that ensued. I mean you look at the the first six,
like Oklahoma City, they just got stronger. Memphis, Hey, you
got the GM talking tough, Denver playing really good basketball,
Jokic getting it done, trying to get again their frontline
healthy as well.

Speaker 4 (39:43):
Houston we expect to fade.

Speaker 3 (39:45):
So guess what you get an opportunity to go slide
up there, fight off Anthony Edwards and maybe give yourself
an opportunity to get into the get out of the
play in bracket. I guess is what I'm trying to say.

Speaker 2 (39:57):
And I'll tell you, I don't know that anybody's gonna
want to watch any of the Eastern Conference playoffs because
there's no drama. Who there's no drama, There's not What
about in distance any Western tasers.

Speaker 4 (40:07):
Again, doesn't Everyboddy.

Speaker 2 (40:09):
No, Every Western Conference matchup you could get is way
more intriguing than anything in the East. Right, you can
people want to watch Boston and the Heat, you know,
the Pacers and the Bucks.

Speaker 3 (40:18):
Come on, man, where are the Knicks being televised? It's
lower than True TV.

Speaker 2 (40:25):
All the Eastern Conference playoffs will be on NBA TV,
the Western Conference d n T, ESPN, all on there.
Uh for Mike com Jason coming up next, it's US
Infraco and Rich we get back into the big wemby injury.
