You're having a great day. The Doug Gottlieb Show broadcasting
from both Green Bay and Southern California. And I can
only tell you it feels like Southern California and Green
(00:45):
Bay today sixty three to get your ease. Not a
cloud in the sky, the ice is melting. Spring is
here and with spring brings us free agency in the
NFL and Sam Donald has yet another home. What a
weekend for the Seattle Seahawks. Right locket gone, You trade
(01:07):
away your your your two star wide receivers and Gino
Smith gone too, and it was the what are the
Seahawks doing? Are they tanking? No, wait, We're gonna go
and get Sam or Darnold and apparently kind of refresh
our team. And it's three years, one hundred million dollars,
which again that the full details will come out, but
(01:29):
probably means it's like a two year deal, which means
they'll draft somebody and develop them to ultimately take over
for Sam while giving him yet another opportunity. And again
it's right along the lines of what we thought financially, right,
three at one hundred is you know, somewhere in the
thirty three million dollars a year, not crazy money, but
(01:49):
also not rookie money. And then you have the Pittsburgh
Steelers who load up with another star wide receiver, yet
we don't know who there going to be. Since now
Justin Fields is a member of the New York Jets,
and that is two years, forty million is starting starting
quarterback numbers for the New York Jets. Mean the Jets,
(02:10):
that's their plan, right, probably the same thing, draft a guy,
develop him. Justin Fields is your guy in the meantime,
and if Justin Fields becomes what he was drafted to be.
Going back to his days in Chicago, Well, then you
only wasted a second or third or fourth round pick
out a quarterback. That's what I love about the NFL
is free agency oftentimes foreshadows what you're gonna do in
(02:33):
the NFL draft. Not always, but oftentimes for shadows what
you're gonna do in the NFL draft. What a fascinating day,
fascinating day off, a fascinating weekend in the NFL. Tractor
Supply knows that a winning season takes practice, team working,
a can do attitude. Thankfully, when you have a neighbor
(02:53):
like Tractors Supply, teamwork comes easy. Whether you're caring for pets, chickens,
or few acres. Our team members will help you succeed
season after season, track to supply for life out here. Okay,
So what this does is one, it gives us a
snapshot into what the Seahawks hope to become. But two,
now it makes us way more interested on what happens
(03:16):
with the Raiders and the Steelers. Right, the Raiders went
and got Geno Smith, which is kind of odd but
it makes sense. Right, is the guy who brought him
to Seattle and had success with him. Is now coach
for him? All right? That, I guess makes sense. I'm
sure they'll do the same thing, try and to have
(03:37):
a young guy who can improve and eventually take over
for Gino. And then Pittsburgh is the team that is
most likely you would think to pursue Aaron Rodgers, isn't it?
Or is it Minnesota that pursues Aaron Rodgers and Aaron
Rodgers to Minnesota? It's like, Okay, are we really doing
(03:59):
the Brett Favre thing all over again? I just again,
I look at this thing and I'm fascinated by what's next.
I don't have any sort of predictor analysis because I
couldn't have predicted that Sam Donald signs a three year,
one hundred point five million dollar contract. But now that
I know that that's done, now I'm getting Now, I'm
(04:21):
now I'm interested. Now you have my attention. Now you
have my attention. You know the Rams get what DeVante Adams.
So we knew he wanted to be on the West coast,
and that means that uh Cooper Cooper cup is definitely
(04:44):
still you know, available and on the move now that
he's been replaced like we're getting We've gotting a lot
of answers about things, which leads to some new questions
but really really makes it interesting. Man, I did not
see Donald to the sea, but then again I didn't
see Geno to the Raiders either. Buyer, you're our resident
(05:06):
Seahawks fan. But that's good because he's he's out, he's
taking a break, he's taking a breather. Ilo, You're watching
all these things come down the pipe. You know. I
love that the Seahawks re signed Chris Godwin. Of course
it's fresh off an injury. I'm sure that decreased the
(05:27):
value of that deal. But it looks like the Buccaneers
are like, hey, this is what we're going with. As
is Seahawks massive change. It leaves the Vikings with do
they go with J. J. McCarthy Probably, But do they
add an Aaron Rodgers for a year to try and
go for it all? Don't know? Or is it the Steelers.
(05:50):
What's the most surprising thing of the weekend for you? Eilo?
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Well, first of all, the reason Dan is not here.
He is actually working the lear jet for light for
Sam Donald to Seattle.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
I don't think he loves Sam Darnald. I think if
we checked in with him, I'm not sure he's a
I'm not sure if he's a Donald fan. As much
as I have a.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Good point, perhaps he is. He is in tears as
we speak. What's fascinating to me is the whole domino
effect of it. And I'd actually really like to get
your take in particular, because even though he's been gone
for a couple of years, you're soaking up the green
and gold culture where you are. For a team like
(06:32):
the Vikings, is it worth Aaron Rodgers or anybody? Is
it worth Aaron Rodgers because of the circus that he
will bring to town that might be buyers right now
by the way, buyer right now, by the way. The
circus effect Is that enough to scare some teams off
in your opinion.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I mean,
if he goes to Minnesota, obviously that would be just
like so oh Farvian, wouldn't it. It would just be like, Wow,
this is so weird. And they're two very different people,
do very different careers, two very different styles or whatever,
(07:12):
but gosh, that would be weird. And with with Pittsburgh, yeah,
I don't know. I mean, obviously they tried, you know,
they've they've lived on. They had an old quarterback past
his prime in a big bend. Uh. Then they tried
something new, something young, that didn't work. Then last year
(07:32):
they tried two quarterbacks. Really Russell Wilson he was washed
and so do they go back to that. Well, again,
I can't tell you definitively, I don't know, because I
really do not. I really do not prophet that. I mean, obviously,
you as a Lions guy, like you're sitting there and
(07:54):
watching this all kind of on the sidelines of what's
what's going on? What do you think Rogers does?
Speaker 3 (08:02):
So the Gary do lack account out today about the
Steelers is winging. I mean, it's down for Aaron Rodgers
down to Steelers and Giants if the Steelers are in play,
which which Gary I mean usually Gary's got very good
reporting on this, and it makes a lot of sense
considering that I don't think they're gonna have Russell Wilson back.
And now you saw it. We just saw Justin Fields
(08:23):
just sign a massive contract with the with the New
York Jets.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
So if Russell Wilson was gonna be back, with the Steelers.
He's already back with the Steelers.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
Yeah, I agree. So the fact that he's not like
I think it does put Aaron Rodgers in play. You know,
they got DK Metcalf, they I mean, it'd be their
last push. But on the other hand, I do know
we have this report that Aaron Rodgers apparently likes New York.
He's got property there. The Giants seemingly will not mind
whatever baggage he brings with it, whereas I don't know
(08:51):
if that's true of the Steelers, although they certainly have
you know, with a locker room of DK Metcalf and
George Pickens, they're they're really gunning for a lot of
drama this year. Aaron Rodgers would fit right in. I
do think it would be I think it would be
most interesting if it was the Steelers.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
Yeah, you have Tomlin kind of going for it, going
all in. They haven't had a quarterback in years, right,
he was any good And now you have the only
thing you can do. I mean, I again, the Steelers
I think have to go there. And and the reason
is the only thing that you can do to help
(09:28):
control the egos of two wide receivers of that caliber
and that level of ego is get a quarterback who's
so well respected and is so accomplished that you can't
say anything to him. And the only guy who who
is that is Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
Yeah, you're fighting, You're fighting ego with ego again.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
Equilibrium, yes, And and look, I don't think Aaron like
do I think Aaron Rodgers is an ego? Yes? Do
I think it comes out? No, you kind of have
to look for it. The point is that George Pickens
can throw a fit all he wants when it's an
inexperienced young quarterback. George Pickens can grumble when it's a
guy who's been cut or been traded away or jettisoned
(10:17):
like his two quarterbacks were last year. George Pickens can't
do that to Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
I agree, And I think the Steelers, you know, when
you bring in Tomlin into this, it's a lot more
of a solid organization that it's not going to be.
Like when Rogers eventually goes, hey I want Alan Lazar,
it's like, well, you have all these great receivers right here.
And I think for Rogers, he understands this is probably
his last destination, his last shot, and it would be
with a team like the Steelers, who all the history,
(10:44):
all the expectations, and really have just even though they
put up winning records, vastly underperformed for what that town
expects from that team. It could work, It could absolutely
work if you get a one more playoff push out
of this group.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
Now on the other side, obviously, so you have a
head coach in New York who has seen as a
quarterback whisperer, right you have you do have Molakue neighbors,
so and you know they've tried to take time and
obviously they can rebuild it. And he does that to
move again. I think the Giants thing is a comfort
(11:22):
thing and I just want to play one more year
in New York and end it the right way. But
do we really think the Giants are gonna beat the Eagles?
Do we really think the Giants are gonna beat the Commanders? Uh? Cowboys?
I mean, I got no idea what that group is doing,
(11:42):
but couldn't have ended worse. Again, I look at the Steelers,
and for a guy who's been in the Packers organization,
and he can say what he wants about the flaws
of the Packers organization. Packers organization is one of the
best run organizations in the league, saying can be said
for this, right, then you go to the Jets. The
(12:02):
Jets are kind of a circus, right, So if you
if he wants to win and he'll sacrifice his ego,
then you go to the Steelers and they finally found
their quarterback. If he just wants to play another year
and thinks he's got a quarterback whisper who can make
it look all better, and he's got a young wide
(12:23):
receiver and you know it's about post career, then you
go to the Giants. Chase, do you okay with that?
Is you okay with that?
Speaker 5 (12:31):
As the read, I'd really welcome to the Steelers. It
looks like it's lining up to be the Steelers. But
I want to tell the listener something. So two years ago,
two years ago around this time, like Aaron Rodgers to
the Jets was a non starter for you. Every time
we brought it up, he's like, You're like, he's not
going to follow a far He's not going to do
it far dead, He's not. That's one team he's not
(12:52):
going to go to. And I've noticed in the last
five minutes you are not going to be that. Uh,
you're not going to be that strict to Rogers to
the Vikings, but you have noted how unusual that would
be to go what wasn't Far of it? Was it
Jets two years or was it one? Here to go Packers, Jets, Vikings?
(13:15):
That would just be I think that would be the
best story and the best fit for him. They would
win right now, right, Yeah, Jets is one year for
Fares by the way.
Speaker 1 (13:24):
Jets just one year for far if not two. But
I mean again, for Aaron Rodgers, it was really it
was really one. Okay, it was really one. Man. I'm
so excited, Like here it is. It's championship week. Obviously,
(13:44):
I'm excited about that. And I'll take you inside a
college basketball program as we're doing our exit meetings and
the transfer portals in front of us and we're recruiting
guys and what that's all like. But god, I'm excited
about the NFL in this quarterback movement. I just I am.
Because the Sam Donald thing was kind of weighing on
his way and on his way and on us. The
(14:06):
Aaron Rodgers is like, is this his last year? And
now it looks like he wants to play another year.
And then the Gino Smith thing was a surprise? Was
that that was a surprise to all? Did anybody know
that was happening? I don't remember that being reported as happening,
which I know it's not Luca. But I love these
surprise traits. Surprise traits. These are awesome. And now we're
(14:30):
left once again waiting on Aaron Rodgers. And Aaron Rodgers
told us a long time ago, Hey, I want to
make my decisions sooner rather than later. And the great
thing about the NFL, as opposed to the NBA is
these free agent decisions are made now and then you
have the draft, and then you have the draft. So man,
(14:52):
that's that's that's big time stuff. Who I'm excited. Would
any of you guys bet your salary at him going
to the Steelers because there and frankly, there could be
other players there. Right, it does feel like San Francisco.
I think it'd be crazy for him to go there.
But if for any reason that negotiation went sideways, does
(15:14):
he go there for a year? Probably not. Okay, I
still think Minnesota's gotta be a possibility. But Pittsburgh and
the Giants is like Pittsburgh's been a quarterback away for
a couple of years now. No one would dispute that, right,
Pittsburgh's been a quarterback away. And I don't think Aaron
(15:35):
Rodgers is anywhere close to what he used to be.
But if you did watch at the end of the year,
he was rounding in the four.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
I just think that whole supporting cast in Pittsburgh is
set up for it. As you say, it's been a
quarterback away. They have not settled this after Ben Roethlisberger.
The narrative from the narrative side, it just makes all
the sense in the world, all the sense.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
Yep, it does. But again, Aaron Rodgers doesn't always do
all the things that make all the sense in the world.
Speaker 6 (16:03):
This is the best of the Don dot Leaf Show

From Rick Buker upcoming in I don't know about twenty
(16:32):
five minutes, we'll get his take on Lebron versus steven
A and Lebron's injury. Plus, UH, I have kind of
a question to ask all of you about college basketball.
It's an interesting one as we're watching championship week take
place and you have the bipolar nature of these tournaments
(16:52):
where some of them are on home sites, the smaller
ones on home sites, some of them are in these big,
gigantic arenas. Some of those arenas are too big, some
of the home sites too small. Is it an unfair
advantage to be playing at home in a conference tournament?
A lot to discuss, A lot to discuss. A quick
congratulations to the Green Bay women. Okay, they won their
twenty first in a row to get to the Horizon
(17:14):
League Championship game, which is tomorrow. And uh we'll be
for Kayla Harrison her team to try and get back
to the NCAA tournament. They've been just awesome here as
a seven seniors and they're like a machine, total machine.
Every Monday, we like to recap our weekend, what we
(17:34):
love from the weekend, what we hate from the weekend,
and then we share some of your thoughts as well
social media at Gottlieb Show, Twitter, at Gottlieb Show Instagram
as well. We call it love and hate.
Speaker 4 (17:43):
What did you love?
Speaker 1 (17:45):
God? I love you and what did you hate? Meet
these play Hays there day buyers out, So that means
we got Ilo, we got Jay stew we got Chris Purfett,
and we got me II though you're more of the lover. Well,
(18:06):
what'd you left in the weekend?
Speaker 2 (18:07):
That's right, baby, I gotta be honest, I'm still gonna
technically count this as a weekend. What just happened for
the Washington Commanders acquiring Laramie Tunsil moments ago in a trade,
five time pro bowler from the Houston Texans. I gotta
(18:27):
say I love that. For the Washington Commanders, the rich
get richer as it were.
Speaker 1 (18:32):
Laramie Tunseel is remembered for one thing and one thing only.
That's the bong video on Draft.
Speaker 4 (18:38):
Night right talk about comeback player of the Year.
Speaker 1 (18:41):
No question, come back players entry, Chris Prophett, send me
left in the weekend?
Speaker 3 (18:46):
H Okay, I could even I could put this even
in hate, but you know what, I actually loved it.
Little brother, big brother is a really big deal in Michigan,
which is not my home state, but Toledo, Ohio might
as well be Michigan, sitting on the border and two
states fighting a war over it. Most of my friends
growing up, it's either Michigan or Michigan State. A lot
(19:06):
more Michigan State in my life, and the chip on
the shoulder is absolutely has always been real. It is
it's and it's always a lot more fascinating for me
when it's in basketball versus football, because usually Michigan football's
just got an edge over Michigan State. But on the
basketball court, the two programs usually have been able to,
(19:26):
like especially recently, have been kind of, you know, close
together in proximity. There's a lot more chance for some
sparring to go on. And we had some fireworks on
the Michigan State Michigan game this weekend. Considering I might
be watching the last couple of years of tom Izzo
here and I don't try, I try not to take
a side, but I do have an empathy towards Michigan State,
(19:47):
mostly because of my friends and watching kind of just
how chippy, how chippy that rivalry is, how testy it is,
even though it like Michigan had no real shot in it,
but like I think I was talking with I know
on the weekend we were trying to figure out, like, hey,
can you bet Michigan first half? Is that a good bet? No,
it wasn't even close, but it still means something.
Speaker 1 (20:08):
There.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
I love that rivalry. I absolutely love it. You tell
me Michigan Michigan states on my television for basketball. I'm
there and I love that game.
Speaker 5 (20:18):
Chase two, Well, first of all, what did you think
of the way Dusty May handled that? And what's up
with the tradition of saying goodbye to the seniors? Like, well,
give me, like, what's the concise version of what happened?
And who got pissed off? And why.
Speaker 1 (20:37):
Pet?
Speaker 4 (20:37):
Sorry are you asking me? You, Doug?
Speaker 1 (20:40):
Oh, don't don't they go and kiss the floor when
they're on the way off the court.
Speaker 4 (20:45):
That's what they were doing.
Speaker 1 (20:46):
Yeah, Yeah, they were kissing the floor. And I think
one of the kids did it push ups whatever. I
think Dusty was Dusty thought that they were showing him up.
Speaker 5 (20:53):
Yeah, yeah, I guess in a blowout that kind of
looks like you're rubbing it in a little bit.
Speaker 4 (20:58):
Yeah. Interesting, Not the big Ada.
Speaker 5 (21:01):
I kind of love that the stephen A Smith and
Lebron thing has not really simmered down. I thought, I
really thought stephen A was going to to uh lose
the staring contest and like say that he regrets kind
of how he's he's handled this or what have you.
But no, stephen A has a back down. And Lebron
(21:22):
had that exchange with Richard Jefferson over the weekend about
something about, uh, you know, you lose me when you
when you try to appeal to me as a father
and all that stuff. I like it because it kind
of works into my theory here. My theory about the
entire thing is this, as long as you say that
you're defending your kid, anything is in play. I mean,
how many how many motion pictures have we seen the
(21:45):
entire Taken franchise, all these like all these storylines where
if you do something to my kid, I could do anything,
even out of the bounds of the law, to defend them.
And I think that that's Lebron's strategy, that as long
as everything is under the umbrella of protecting my kid,
it doesn't matter that I can accost a guy in
(22:06):
the middle of a game and everything is on the
up and up, because we know one thing for sure
about Lebron he never does anything that isn't calculated for
pr and I really think that that I guess altercation
or whatever you call want to call it with stephen
A was completely contrived and he did it for the
reaction and it worked.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
Okay, that's do we think he did for the reaction? Okay,
what bigger discussion? But yeah, okay, I got it. And look,
we'll ask Rick Puker. I wonder what Rick Poker has
to say. He joins his upcoming about fifteen minutes. What
(22:47):
I love for the weekend, gosh so much. Yeah, I'm
allowed to say this. I went and I attended. So
we lost last week. Our season's over, so I'm allowed
to go. I can't go and pre scout other college
basketball gainst teams we're gonna play. I'm allowed to go
(23:09):
to college basketball games, though, So I went to a
Division two game at Michigan Tech University. Do you guys
have any idea where Michigan Tech is perfect? Any idea?
Speaker 3 (23:23):
I'm gonna say, God, I used to it's It's not
in the Upper Peninsula, but it's up in like the
north of the.
Speaker 4 (23:28):
Mitten of Michigan.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
No, it's in the Upper minute.
Speaker 4 (23:31):
Oh, it is in the Upper Peninsula.
Speaker 1 (23:32):
Okay, it's in Houghton, Michigan. All right, I want you
guys to go see where Houghton, Michigan is. Type it in.
Okay it is. Uh, it's about don't know, twenty five
minutes from Copper Harbor, which is literally the top of
that portion of the United States, that portion of Michigan.
And like when you get in the water, you're in
(23:53):
Lake Superior, right, I mean it is up there, and
I don't know, just fascination to see how life works,
sports works, whatever. Watched a great game decided by one point.
And what's interesting was like, you know, I'm basketball guy,
basketball guy, and you walk into Michigan Tech, which is
(24:16):
a great engineering school by the way, and I walk
into arena. I'm like, man, this thing is beautiful. They
got a three D, they got a video board, they
got chair back. And then I look and it's the
hockey arena. They're like, well, where's the basketball arena. But
that basketball team they play on top of the ice,
Like no, they played down the hall and it was
like you know, old school kind of fieldhouse or whatever.
(24:38):
I don't know, really enjoyed my experience. Did have plenty
of chance in jeers from the Michigan Tech football team.
In the meantime, I kind of like getting back to
the roots of just got kids that want to play basketball.
And by the way, those two teams are going to
play each other in the first round of the Division
two tournament. Brackett was just released, which is the fourth
time they've played this year, which is kind of crazy.
(25:00):
All right, let's get to the other side, Samia hated
from the weekend Jace, who's our resident hater? He gets
to start, Jase do.
Speaker 5 (25:09):
Speaking of the fourth time they might face each other,
I guess UCLA and USC might face each other in
the NCAA Tournament Women's hoops. That would be the fourth time.
Supposedly this rivalry has taken over the world of sports.
But something very regrettable happened in their game yesterday or
was it two days ago? Maybe you know this woman
Lisa Byington, CBS announcer, sure had the goal to say
(25:35):
this in the middle of the games.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
Gie Walkins has caught the women's basketball world by storm,
certainly lit the world of Los Angeles on fire.
Speaker 5 (25:49):
So I don't know what's more offensive that she is
just incorrect in both of those statements, or that she
actually used an analogy that Juju Watkins has set Los
Angeles on fire, a very regrettable analogy. And I could
say this even if even if you take it as
(26:09):
an analogy a metaphor, she hasn't set Los Angeles on fire.
Speaker 4 (26:13):
I live here. She hasn't.
Speaker 5 (26:16):
And then the first statement is also you could dispute
that one as well. Has she really taken over the
women's basketball world?
Speaker 4 (26:25):
I haven't. I wouldn't know.
Speaker 1 (26:26):
I wouldn't know, no UCLA s and I'm going to
rank team in the country.
Speaker 5 (26:30):
Right they were, maybe they still are. I will wouldn't know.
Isaac's good at that stuff. He's shaking this out, he
has no idea.
Speaker 1 (26:42):
That's kind of more than a little hysterical. Yeah, that
I well, I mean, I think we all know she
didn't mean anything by it, but that was regrettable, regrettable.
I'll also tell you this, for whatever reason, it's like,
and it's it's always been that way in the men's
(27:03):
game in terms of this time tis the season to
shill for your conference. And by that I mean not
just the coaches and the players. But if you're a
broadcaster and you call Big ten games, you're like, twenty
Big ten teams should be in the NCAA tournament. They
turn on the SEC and they're like fifteen SEC teams.
Like it's like, wait, what doesn't make any says? Then
(27:23):
you watch, you know, you watch the Horizon tonight, they'll
be like, hey, three of these teams should get it.
Like that's not happening. But with women's basketball, it is
so over the top. The shilling for women's basketball like relax,
And part of it is, as we've seen, the women's
game can't take the feedback. I got the easiest most
(27:46):
hate herble thing there is. Can we all talk about
this Angel Reese thing? Angel Reese has said she thinks
the women should be paid as much is the men
while playing in a three on three full court league
that you know, they they darken out to show that
(28:09):
there's nobody sitting there watching. And then she has threatened
to boycott the season if her demands aren't met. Yeah,
I mean, there's nothing nothing more hateable than somebody who
won doesn't understand the easy aspects of business. Secondly, the
(28:33):
WNBA and the Wnbapa, I believe agreed to a deal
a year ago with increased compensation. So you have a
CBA that has agreed to the sign to you're a
member of the union. You have no grounds for sitting
out other than you know you want to bring down
(28:53):
the downfall of your league by all means. Can't stand her,
cannot stand her hysterical. Oh, I got one more thing
I hate. So Draymond Green is cutting off contact with
Stephen A. Smith over his communication over what he said
about Bronnie's son. Okay, you can almost it's it's barely
(29:15):
visible the strings of Draymond Green talking when you know
from lebron James controlling those strings, like I don't care
how good of friends you are, like Draymond, like, what
are you doing? What are we doing? Anyway? Pretty obvious.
(29:38):
Chris Purfett something that you hate from the weekend.
Speaker 3 (29:41):
Yeah, two hates. I'll make this first one very quick.
I hate looking at my stocks right now. Let's just
start there. The second thing I hate as we watch
NFL Free Agency, I'm still trying to process this one.
Speaker 4 (29:53):
I felt like.
Speaker 3 (29:55):
The the the emotions, the vibes around the New York
Jets was final getting into a good place. You know,
Aaron Rodgers, I mean Aaron Glenn's there as the new
head coach. He's got the city charge up. Let's kick
out Aaron Rodgers. This, that and the other thing. And
then their solution at quarterback today was to hand Justin Fields.
Speaker 1 (30:15):
Was it two years? Three years?
Speaker 3 (30:16):
I think it was averaging around two years, averaging around
I believe twenty million dollars. I don't understand this move.
I mean, maybe I'm wrong, maybe like they're just gonna
have Justin Fields run the ball quite a bit. But
whatever good vibes I have have just been kind of
thoroughly erased. If this is really their plan at quarterback
is to run out someone who didn't even get to
(30:38):
play a full season and got pulled for Russell Wilson
with the with the Pittsburgh Steelers and has really not
shown any kind of growth at this point whatsoever.
Speaker 4 (30:49):
I don't understand this move.
Speaker 3 (30:50):
I really don't, and I feel like this is a
hard break stop on the good vibes. I was finally
feeling for the Jets and that the Jets have gone
back to just like doing Jets things again. You want
to stand, Yeah, I am maybe maybe I'm going to
hold out a little bit of hope here, but this
is like I'm I'm gonna need to sit down for
a few days to process this one.
Speaker 1 (31:11):
Uh, let's go to Isaac Glone Crown send me hate
it from the weekend.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
This is from a broadcasting standpoint, not a UFC standpoint,
because I'm not really into it. But over the weekend,
the streaming pay perview telecast of UFC three thirteen ran
into technical difficulties that did not allow fans who had
(31:40):
paid for it to access the telecast.
Speaker 4 (31:44):
Now, this is.
Speaker 2 (31:45):
Part of like a billion dollar broadcasting deal. It was
a pay perview streaming telecast and the worst of the weekend.
How do you like to be the person in charge
of the the it engineering for that telecast to have
it go wrong? And I think now that we're in
(32:07):
the streaming area era, I hope it doesn't happen, but
it's almost inevitable that one day we're gonna be talking
about a big NFL streaming only telecast that has these
same technical difficulties because of the unique risks associated with
(32:27):
streaming something and accessing it instead of it being fed
to viewers over a television network with hundreds and hundreds
of affiliate stations.
Speaker 1 (32:39):
That was deep in the weeds, but I got it.
I thought you bootleg all of your streaming stuff.
Speaker 2 (32:48):
Oh, if it was an NFL game, I would have
bootlegged it for sure.
Speaker 1 (32:54):
And that is love and hay.
Speaker 6 (32:55):

the nation. Catch all of our shows at Fox Sportsradio

Speaker 1 (33:05):
It's Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. All right,
let's continue this NFL free agency talk. It started today
and it's fast and furious, and it's it's hopp and
we've had trades. We have teams reforming their rosters. Rich
Orenberger joins us. He's a former NFL lineman and he's
a daily morning show host on our sister station in
San Diego. He also a co host of Fox Sports
Radio's Countown to Kickoff with Jared Smith and Brian know
(33:27):
Airs each Saturday between nine am and new and Eastern time.
Listen live on our Fox Sports Radio Phillis are on
the iHeartRadio appresented by Bett MGM. Rich thanks so much
for taking time. Biggest story so far, trades and free
agency to you is what.
Speaker 7 (33:47):
The biggest story I would say is what an enormous
jump the Las Vegas Raiders took because if you think
about the Raiders, their issue, basically sim the end of
the Derek Carr era has been they haven't gotten anything
right at quarterback. You know, they really are a middling
(34:08):
to poor team in the NFL, and the biggest reason
for that is it's been relatively nondescriptive quarterback. You know,
it's kind of been a who's who of Gardner Minshew,
who's a quality backup in this league, definitely a capable,
veteran bridge quarterback, but you know he's not an everyday
(34:28):
starter Aidan O'Connell. When you think about those two, or
even a Jimmy Garoppolo who spent some time in Las Vegas, like,
it's just it's just not going to work. You know,
you need to make an investment in the quarterback position
at some point, and I think trading for Gino Smith
(34:48):
is the first step. I'm very curious to see what
they do in the draft now. You know, the rumor
mill is starting that potentially they could be looking to,
you know, even trade down or look elsewhere other than
quarterback because it's not a particularly deep quarterback draft, but
I want to be shocked if they double down, like
if they have a Geno Smith and then yeah, they're
(35:11):
also interested in getting a QB to have Gino Smith groom.
Speaker 1 (35:15):
Yeah, listen, I think that's exactly. I think that's what
all these teams are going to do. Right when they
look and they look at the draft and they're like, yeah,
they got two maybe three that could go in the
first round, You're like, yeah, we're not going to do that. Instead,
Let's let's go sign a guy who's solid, right, who's solid,
and he can be the guy for a year, year
(35:36):
and a half, two years, whatever, and then draft a
guy in the third or fourth round, develop him and
see if ultimately can beat him out. Meanwhile, if not,
we can always go back into the draft when there's
a deeper draft for quarterbacks.
Speaker 4 (35:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (35:50):
Yeah, I think that In general, teams are looking I
don't know, they're looking at themselves in the mirror and saying, like,
all right, Tim, we win with our roster, And the
answer for many teams is no, well, where do we
need to fix this?
Speaker 1 (36:04):
Well?
Speaker 7 (36:05):
The blemishes are typically not always, but typically at the
quarterback position, where you have one who you can win with,
who you can consistently be in contention for the playoffs with. Well,
you've got a lot, right, because if you have a
good enough quarterback and you have a good enough head coach,
you can win a lot of games in this league.
If you have a question mark at either of those two,
(36:25):
it gets a lot harder. And so look, you know
front offices, head coaches, they believe in themselves. So typically
we talk about the players, and it's true. I mean
it is true if you don't have a competence starter
at that position, and we know it's the most important
position in sports. You know, that's well documented how important
it is to have the right guy at the helm
(36:46):
on a football field. If you don't have a quarterback
or if you don't have the quarterback position right, then
you're going to get a lot wrong. And so I
think that's going to be the path that a lot
of teams warn't walk in the coming seasons, especially since
veterans are sticking around the game a lot longer than
they used to. You know, you have Russell Wilson floating around.
You know, you have Aaron Rodgers still looking for work.
(37:08):
You know, there's going to be plenty more where that
came from. And that's good because not only do you
have a veteran who can groom a youngster, but then
you have a guy who can step into the line
of fire if somebody gets injured.
Speaker 1 (37:22):
Stuck got lips show here on Fox Sports Radio, Rich
joins us. You can hear him on Countdown every Saturday
morning here on Fox Sports Radio, and of course every
morning in San Diego. You go back like three weeks
ago and you would have but Matt Stafford is going
to be elsewhere next year, and the Rams with all
(37:42):
this young talent on defense where they're gonna have a
new quarterback, Stafford's back and now they got Davonte Adams.
What do you think I.
Speaker 7 (37:51):
Like the Rams? Again, going back to what we were
just discussing, Doug, when you have a good quarterback and
you have a good coach, you have a lot right. Well,
Sean mcvay's a great coach. I mean he's proven that
time and time again, both with really talented teams, taking
them all the way to the Super Bowl and winning one,
you know, having appeared in two Super Bowls, but also
(38:13):
you know, taking some of these Rams rosters recently, especially
with either low expectations to start the season or a
ton of injuries to start the season and still fighting
and clawing and finding a way into the postseason. Sean
mcvay's a great coach. Then you look at Matthew Stafford,
who while he's an aging great, there's still greatness in him.
(38:34):
He can make all the throws and if he can
stay relatively healthy, you have a real good shot at
making the postseason. Again, you add a excellent, not a good,
but an excellent number one threat on the outside, like
DeVonta Adams, and they can get on the same page early.
I mean, the Rams are arguably the most dangerous team
(38:56):
in the NFC West right now.
Speaker 1 (38:59):
Yeah, yeah, I mean considering what the Niners thought they
were going to be. Now the Seahawks look different. What
do you think of the Seahawks moved to bring in Donald?
You said, hey, if you have a pretty good coach,
you have bred your quarterback. I'm wondering your thoughts on
Donald with the Seahawks.
Speaker 7 (39:12):
Yeah, you know, the jury's out of Mike McDonald. I
think that things felt stable with him. We'll see how
that progresses. But in terms of Sam Donald, he's turned
in the best, the best season of his career so far.
I think when you all of a sudden put things
together the way Sam Donald did, it booies your confidence.
(39:36):
And then on top of it, when you sign with
a new squad and you're coming off a season like that,
all those players know I mean, and those players watch
the film, and those players saw how effective you can be,
and so it's just different. I mean, think about how
different Sam Donald is walking in just from a confidence
(39:57):
standpoint into the Seattle meeting rooms and shaking hands with
the coaches and his teammates for the first time, versus
when he walked into the facility in Minnesota. You know,
he was coming off of another backup year in the
NFL with the forty nine ers, and he went to
Minnesota on a flyer to see if he can't help
(40:18):
JJ McCarthy get it right in his first year. JJ
goes down and then he explodes as an MVP candidate
for portions of the season. So I'm very curious to
see what Sam looks like in Seattle. You knew somebody
was going to take a gamble on Sam, and I
think they gambled right. I think there's a lot of
(40:39):
good that we saw in Donald coming out of USC.
He went to a train wreck of a program with
the New York Jets, and then he got hurt and
arguably was two injured the entire time he was in
Carolina to make that even work. And so I'm excited
for the future for Sam Darnold, but I'm really interested
to see how Seattle King capitalize off this newfound confidence.
Speaker 1 (41:02):
Yeah, that's gonna be fascinating to watch. I'm wondering what
Aaron Rodgers does, you know, outside shot, maybe Minnesota for
a year feels too much like FARV Pittsburgh or the Giants,
or retire. What do you think, man?
Speaker 7 (41:24):
You know Aaron Rodgers, I think first and foremost is
going to do what's best for Aaron Rodgers at this
point in his career, and that's not slighting him. I
think that's what he should do. So if Aaron Rodgers
has an opportunity to play in Pittsburgh and it's a
situation where he's surrounded by the type of talent that
(41:45):
they've just acquired with Decay and George Pickens already being
on that roster, I mean that bodes extremely well. But
if it's the Giants. I mean, do you do you want.
Speaker 4 (41:56):
To do that?
Speaker 7 (41:57):
You know what I mean? It might be a situation
where Aaron says, hey, you know what's better for me.
Is it better to play for a team that's, you know,
in the middle of a rebuild that I'm probably going
to be grooming a quarterback? Or is it better for
me to play for a team that has a real
chance to contend here in what will be either his
(42:17):
final year or one of his final years. And so
I could see Aaron if if the opportunities aren't good
enough for Aaron and specifically Aerin, I could see him
having a gap year, you know, sitting out waiting for
somebody to call him who's desperate for a quarterback because
their starter went down during training camp or early in
the season, or who knows. Maybe if it takes that
(42:40):
long for him to be signed, maybe it's a mid
season acquisition where he signed as a free agent to
step in and save the day for a team who's
seven and two and has, you know, pretty high playoff hopes.
I think that's ill a possibility floating out there in
the ether.
Speaker 1 (42:55):
That would be fascinating. That would be fascinating. What do
you think this does for the rookie quarterbacks. I mean,
it feels like Cleveland's going to take one, right, But
now that all these guys are, they're taking quarterbacks early.
And I know we talked about the possibility of the
Raiders developing somebody, But you don't take some you don't.
(43:17):
You don't trade for Gino Smith only to make them
a backup. Right, you don't sign Sam Darland to make
them a backup. Especially they're not making backup money. So
what do you think it does for SaaS shud Or
Sanders in regards to his draft ability if, for example,
Aaron Rodgers chooses to go to the Giants.
Speaker 7 (43:36):
Well, I think a lot about the salary cap. And
you know, some of these newly minted contracts that we're
seeing around the NFL for the highest paid quarterbacks, you
know what what used to be starting contract money for
a quarterback is now backup pay. And then you know,
(43:58):
when if you really pan out, even just five years ago,
some of the highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL, I
mean that that type of money, you know, is pennies
on the dollar compared to what you need to pay
like a solid starter who is getting a new contract
these days. So I guess the point I'm trying to
make is quarterback contracts age well with a rising salary cap.
(44:21):
So even though right now Geno Smith doesn't really seem
like a bargain or you know, an Aaron Rodgers even
you know, when when you think about how that contract
will compare to a rookie pay scale, and then how
long those contracts will sit on your on your cap
until they expire, it may be a risk world you're
(44:44):
willing to take signing a veteran free agent or trading
for in the case of the Raiders, and then also
drafting a quarterback. It's essentially what the Falcons did, and
I don't think they necessarily did it the right way
because it didn't feel it didn't feel like they got
any sort of price savings on Kirk Cousins whatsoever, because
(45:06):
they read the goes for that. You know, they signed
him to a pretty fat contract with heavy guarantees, and
then they traded up to get their quarterback of the future.
I think that was a little bit beyond the pale,
but I could see other teams doing that to a
lower threshold salary wise, with signing a veteran quarterback. And
(45:27):
still getting younger in the draft at the same time.
Speaker 1 (45:32):
Uh man, this is good stuff. By the way, If
you like, listen to Rich Hornberger as I do. Check
him out every morning on our Fox Sports Radio affiliate

I thought that you have to pay for it. It's
part of like the ex premium or whatever. Really, yeah,
Fox Sports Radio goes the extra mile. However, I will
let's talk off air, Duck, let's talk off air.
Speaker 1 (46:47):
I have no it's it's okay. I mean they granted
me the premium thing. I need to pay for that thing,
so that's gonna be okay, super interesting. I didn't know
there was. I just need just because all this stuff
is fast and furious, and you're trying to process as
you go, and you're just kind of watching Twitter and
watching all those guys that you respect their insiders and
wondering what it all means.
Speaker 3 (47:07):
Twitter has gone down like about four or five times
today too, So it's been I've had to open up
threads and Blue Sky here and there as well.
Speaker 1 (47:16):
Buyer's a big Blue Sky guy. I've tried tried Blue Sky.
It's like cheering me, Sue. It doesn't do it for me.
