doing Hi?

Speaker 2 (00:41):
How are you?

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Yeah? Yeah? Well, you know, it's interesting when you're doing
a budget, right when you're doing a budget and we've
talked about this for the last couple of years, and
you've seen it be a kind of a trend in

(01:03):
the National Football League where everybody wants to be what
the San Francisco forty nine ers have been. They've been
the model for how to create a great roster in
the National Football League. And what you do is you
get a quarterback who in this particular case, was mister

(01:24):
irrelevant the last pick of the NFL draft, and if
you can develop it, if you can play him, if
he can be a starter. Everyone else is paying now
forty to sixty million dollars a year. You're paying him
Bubkiss a million dollars a year, and you use all
that money elsewhere. It's fascinating to me on how there

(01:48):
have been so many other negotiations with quarterbacks that have
gone awry and they've gotten ugly at the end when
this one. Listen, this is Jed York talking about his
quarterback and the potential for getting a deal done.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
And you make the decision that you want to pay
a quarterback that has obviously been underpaid for his first
three seasons in the NFL. When you make that change,
you have to make sacrifices somewhere. It's a decision that
we made collectively, and we're hoping that we make somebody
the highest paid player in the history of our franchise.
And that was a decision that we made. I mean
probably in the middle of the season. I have every hope,

(02:29):
in every expectation that Brock is going to be a forty.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
Nine or for a long, long time yeah, so Luksen,
they've gone all in. This is our guy, He's our
next Montana. Remember Joe Montana was also a late late
draft pick as well. The issue with it is like,
can brock Purty be Brock Party if he's not surrounded
by an all star cast? Right? Can brock Purty be

(02:56):
brock Purty if he's not surrounded by an all star cast?
And what they'll have to do? And look, some of
the guys they've had to part ways with or past
their prime and they need to move on anyway. But
the Niners were so many people's pick to come out
of the NFC for the Super Bowl the past couple
of years in no small part because of the overall

(03:19):
ensemble cast, not because of Brock Party, not because of
Brock Party. And look, it's not any different. Even in
my position, You're like, wait, what, you're a college basketball
coach for a mid major. Sure, but we have a budget,

(03:39):
just like they have a salary cap. We have a budget.
How much we can spend. Are we better off building
it with one or two star players? Knowing that again,
in free agency the hit rate's probably going to be
thirty three percent, or are we better off being good
across the board and just being solid. And if you
can get you know, a discount on one of your

(04:02):
best players, can you then use that use that to
sprinkle in other places. It's not the niners fault that
he was underpaid the past couple of years. It really isn't.
Rock Party wasn't valued by the league. Every team in
the league had at least four chances to draft him,

(04:26):
And you're like, wait, there was you know, seven rounds. Yeah,
but not everybody picks every round. Okay, some teams don't
have picks, so I would teams had at least four,
if not six, or seven or eight or nine chances
to draft him. None of them did. The Niners did,
and he got to play far sooner than anybody thought,
and he was better, but he was also surrounded by

(04:46):
all these really good players. Just this is going to
be fascinating, and the Niners do appear to be doing
something because that's how it's always been done. That makes sense.
Why are you paying him so much money? Well, that's
always it's always been Okay, has anybody thought, well, what

(05:10):
would happen if he walks? Whoa if he walks or
if you say we're not gonna pay you sixty million.
We're gonna pay you thirty five million, and I'm gonna
guarantee it for five years. Will somebody else outdo them? Maybe?
Are you really that concerned about it? I wouldn't be.

(05:34):
I wouldn't be. Maybe that's wrong, But does anybody believe?
I want your honest belief? Pat Mahomes or brock Party,
come on, Lamar Jackson or brock Purty, come on, Josh
Allen or brock Purty, come on. Now you could sit

(05:57):
there and go, hey, he's great in our system. He's
a really good run. He may not be Lamar, but
he's really really athletic he is. He may not be
Pat Mahomes, but he's good running around out of the
pocket he is. Does he have a big time cannon
for an arm?

Speaker 2 (06:13):
Is he?

Speaker 1 (06:13):
Josh Allen?

Speaker 4 (06:14):
No?

Speaker 1 (06:16):
If you put him on the bills, would they get
as far as they got?

Speaker 5 (06:19):
No?

Speaker 1 (06:21):
So I I'm not saying he stinks. I'm not saying
get rid of him. I'm saying, why do we have
the need to make guys the highest paid ever ever ever?
When what's made Rock Purty, brock Purty is he hasn't
made a lot of money, so you've been able to
give him an all star cast of players and now look,

(06:41):
and some of it's a good excuse because I'm guessing
the Niners are like, we'd love to move off of
off of Deebo Samuel, Right, Deebo Samuel, overpaid, Brandon a yuck, overpaid,
gets hurt, would love to move off of that. You know,
some of this is a good excuse to you know,

(07:02):
they were kind of overpaid. We want to get out
of those deals. It allows us to do it and
then say, hey, brock Purty's contract is the reason why.
But how we view brock Purty from this point forward
is going to be far different because he won't be
viewed as the man I don't care what you're getting
out of him. He was mister irrelevant. So the fact

(07:23):
that he can even tie his cleats and throw a
football and get a play in it's a win. Now
he'll be viewed as the sixty million dollar man that
changes the team's expectations of him, fans expectations of him,
and obviously changes the supporting cast around him. Put me

(07:47):
down for the I've said this for the last three years.
Brock Party is really really good. But He is the
classic trailer, not the truck. He is part of the
ensemble cast, not the not the star of the show.

(08:08):
And when you pay a guy who is really good
that kind of money, he gets held to a standard
that he can't live up to. That's my guess. This
is the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Foxsports Radio. It's
coming to you from the tie rack dot com studios.

Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. It is the Doug
Gotlib Show. It is Fox Sports Radio. I love the Cowboys.
I just I love the Cowboys because they like to
share all their stuff in public. Here's Jerry Jones talking
about his negotiations with Michael Parsons.

Speaker 5 (09:43):
Term, guarantees, money, all those things.

Speaker 6 (09:46):
We've had a meeting other minds.

Speaker 1 (09:49):
Why have you not had that same meeting of mind
with his agent?

Speaker 2 (09:52):
Well, I don't know that.

Speaker 5 (09:55):
You know, I'm the one who has signed the check
and Minchel's one who has to agree to it.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (10:00):
That's the straightest.

Speaker 5 (10:01):
Way to get there, is uh, the one right in
the check and the one agree into a talking and
that's the principle that's involved here. And I understand uh
uh all the other issues, but uh, as you know,
It's not uncommon for me to negotiate your rector with players,
and I've done that, and so uh we are there.

(10:22):
I don't view it as urgent at all.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (10:25):
You know, some say, well, using the basis that there
earlier you get something done, the cheaper with earlier you
get something done. A lot of times the woman states
you mighty, and uh, you might wanna see a few
more cards play, not just with that particular negotiation, but
with the whole team. And so uh, I I know I'm.

Speaker 6 (10:47):
Kind of being a little defensive here, but uh, the
uh idea that the only success is getting a contract
done uh at an early time, it is incorrect and
I'd rather play more and get it right.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
That's It's a fascinating It's a snapshot into why uh
he feels like Dak Prescott steel like I don't. I
don't love brat Dak Prescott steeal, I just don't. And
then of course he promptly got hurt. And we've seen
this before with other with other cowboys, where it's like
why did they wait? And we saw it with the

(11:27):
with the Ravens, with you know, with Lamar Jackson. We've
seen with other people and Again, everyone has their own
philosophy and you can say, well, one philosophy is best,
but he's I would rather get it right and pay
a little bit more. Doesn't mean it's the perfect strategy,
does mean it is his strategy, and it kind of

(11:49):
makes some sort of sense. By buyer, where are you?
And and for people I know most people listen to
the show you have. We've been together for eight ears,
me and Dan. But Dan has his podcast I Want Reflex,
and of course he hosts our Sunday Fox Sports Trader,
usually during the second NFL window. So aside from his

(12:12):
Seahawks beloved Seahawks. And by the way, we're talking about
Dave Craig yesterday, like your ears must have been burning, but.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
Not he's from not too far from Yeah, what's that
town called. It's from Schofield, Yes, so Marcus Hall your
top player.

Speaker 1 (12:30):
Yeah, it's from Scofield.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
Went to Everett, DC, Everest and that's where Dave Craig
went high school.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
Uh, and then he went to what college? Did he
go to?

Speaker 2 (12:38):
Milton College? That's closed right, no longer exists?

Speaker 1 (12:41):
Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, aside from the Seahawks, I would say
that the that the the look You've watched more Niners
games than probably anybody because it's in that window. They're
always on Rock Purty. Where is he in the landscape

(13:02):
of quarterbacks from your perspective.

Speaker 2 (13:05):
Well, Jed York said today a top ten quarterback, and
I just I don't think that he's there yet. I
would still take a veteran quarterback like Matthew Stafford over
over someone like Brock Purty. I just I want to
see to your point at the top of what he
does now that he is the highest paid quarterback. What

(13:26):
I do think is interesting is this actually isn't foreign
for the forty nine ers. We think it is, but
it isn't with the John Lynch Kyle Shanahan era because
when they got Jimmy Garoppolo in a trade with New England.
Remember Jimmy G had that great end to his first
time because he was traded mid season and he was

(13:47):
put in and the Niners end up winning like five
games and it was Jimmy g craziness. Well, Jimmy G
then was awarded a contract that had him of the
highest average annual salary of any quarterback in the NFL,
actually passed Matthew Stafford's at that time. So the forty
nine ers in doing this, like with brock Purty, it's

(14:07):
almost Doug like they fell backwards into what we thought
was their plan, and that is build everything around the
quarterback and then pay for it later. But that wasn't
the case. They kind of went backwards in it. And
I think what they're saying is they were so close
with Garoppolo in winning a super Bowl at super Bowl
fifty four that man, if they could just get that
person to complete that pass to Emmanuel Sanders, that they

(14:30):
would be fine. And I think super Bowl fifty eight
somewhat backs that up. But I don't think it's foreign
for this front office to pay brock Purty, and I
think that's the I don't want to say it's the
only way that they know how, but it almost makes
me question the other success of being like, man, you
guys had to have a couple of tank years, you know,
where they got Nick Bosa with a second overall pick

(14:51):
to really put this bad boy together. I just I'm
shocked they're falling in line with the rest of the league,
I guess is my point.

Speaker 1 (14:57):
I agree with you. Let's welcome in. John Milcoffee joined
his podcast is called three and out. It's outstanding, John,
where are you? I mean that the Niners Jeduar comes out,
It's like, hey, some of those guys left because we're
trying it. We got to clean the clear the books
for brock Purty. Now look some of them. I mean, like,
I don't think they liked the Deebo Samuel deal from

(15:18):
the moment they signed it, right, so some of it
they did it in a favor. But is he good
enough to be a truck not a trailer?

Speaker 5 (15:27):
No?

Speaker 7 (15:27):
I mean, how many guys are true, you know truck
they can carry a team in the league. It's a
very very short number. I mean, he's proven when the
team's good around him. Like his competition in the NFC,
He's not going up against Burrow and Lamar and Josh
and Patrick. Now he might play those guys on a
rotating basis once every couple of years, but he does not.

(15:50):
You know, have to see those guys in the playoffs
till the Super Bowl. So you look at Jared Goff,
you look at Jalen Hurts like they've been paid and
their teams are loaded on off and two years ago
when his team was loaded and McCaffrey was dominating and
Nyuk was playing well. He was awesome. He was an
MVP candidate. Now was he a true MVP candidate most years?

Speaker 8 (16:11):
No?

Speaker 7 (16:11):
But I mean he was thirty plus touchdowns, seventy percent
completion percentage, and Kyle loves him, so I think, you know,
it depends what they end up paying him. I'm not
if they give him like one hundred and fifty million
dollars guaranteed, Like, I don't love it, but it kind
of is what it is. If we're talking like Dak
Deshaun Watson money, I think that's insanity because it's just

(16:35):
not going to work out unless they hit on every
draft pick. And what's faith that they've had been very
hit or missed with draft picks, especially high in the draft.

Speaker 1 (16:42):
Stut Gottleib Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Starting to
feel like the Aaron Rodgers thing is going to happen.
What are your people inside the NFL say?

Speaker 7 (16:53):
Well, I heard someone say this a couple of weeks ago,
and I thought it was like kind of crazy. That
McAfee's show in Pittsburgh, the Live Show, and I was like,
you know, that's insane. It's gonna wait that long and
now it kind of feels like, yeah, that's exactly what's
gonna happen. Uh with which Uh yeah, maybe it was
always gonna happen like that. And Tomlin those guys are
on board. Uh, it's pretty clear of me thrown with DK.

(17:15):
It's not like he's just trying to get a sweat.
I mean, come on, uh yeah, I mean nothing has
actually changed because they're not practicing or anything. But it'll
be interesting, you know, are the is he's gonna get
a round of applause? Is there gonna be some booze
when he when he comes out? If that turns out
to be the case, Uh, I do think why would they?

Speaker 1 (17:35):
Why would they boo him? They've needed a quarterback since
like Big Ben's next to last year.

Speaker 7 (17:39):
I know, but it's like the whole hoopla behind it
is not It doesn't really feel like Steel City people.

Speaker 1 (17:46):
No, it definitely feels like the least stealer thing ever.

Speaker 7 (17:49):
Right, This is not do not feel like some of
the JA the Jags. You know, Jerry Jones dreams of
stuff like this, you know, in a weird way. You know,
sure his stats weren't terrible, but we anyone that watched
the guy play. Knew it wasn't you know, he wasn't
the same level guy. But it's the Jet you know,
joke franchise. I mean, they're fire in the whole building.

Speaker 8 (18:11):
You know.

Speaker 7 (18:11):
Woody Johnson is probably viewed as one of the worst
owners in the league. Like they aren't going to really
be excuses to not be pretty good if you're Aaron Rodgers,
and it's hard when you're forty one years old. So
it's gonna be that division. And the other thing is
he's definitely not the top two quarterback in his own division,
so a lot of pressure on, you know, on the

(18:31):
defensive guys to stay healthy. The league is more interesting
with him on the Steelers than retiring, that's for sure.
So I'm happy that it sure looks like it's gonna
go that way, But I'm not confident. I wouldn't just
chuck them up for eleven or twelve wins, would you?

Speaker 1 (18:46):
No? No, no, But again, like everyone wants to do
this right if you just had competent quarterback play, you know,
or elite level quarterback plays something else. But they've been
doing it with with a lower end of the top
thirty two quarterbacks for the past five years. And yeah,

(19:10):
now you add in a higher level wide receiver, you
got two big time wide receivers. They think they fix
their line. Ish you always think the defense is good.
I mean, it's definitely a risk word taking.

Speaker 7 (19:22):
Well, like the way the Chiefs won so many games
last year and felt like most of them during the
regular season were like twenty one to nineteen or you know,
eighteen to fifteen, like they were just winning these crazy
lower scoring games. Like you said, the Stealers have been
playing that way and their nine or ten wins for
the last five years, and if they can just get
a little more explosive on offense, I would imagine that

(19:45):
they draft you know, nausey goes to the Chargers. They
keep warning, but you know, there's a great running back draft.
It wouldn't shock me if they took like the North
Carolina kid with their first round pick. Definitely wouldn't if
they take a guy in the second round or the
third round, because there's so many good running backs. So

(20:05):
I would imagine that they go running back somewhere high,
which you know, in theory would help.

Speaker 1 (20:10):
Aaron stut Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Radio. That's
the voice of John Middlecoff. All right, John, lots of
talk because the Giants took Russe Wilson. Did the Giants
take it? Russell Wilson Jameis Winson makes sense to you.

Speaker 7 (20:27):
You know, I think when they're in the worst situation,
they're completely desperate. There aren't many options. They don't control
the draft. It's clear that the Titans, I mean, I
think have been dead set on cam Ward now for
since the combine, and so he's off the board. You
have no clue what the Browns are going to do.
You just kind of bet they basically took two guys

(20:49):
the equal a Bridge quarterback. You know, Russell got ten
million dollars guaranteed, Jamis four. It's like basically, you know,
Gardner Mintchew last year I think got fifteen million dollars
from the Raiders. So they basically just bought Bridge quarterback.
But they they signed two guys, and I don't know,
maybe they just maybe they end up taking a guy
on the second day, but I don't know, you know,

(21:10):
Shador might be there. Are we sure that you know,
if you're if you are Brian Daboll, are you like
just dead set on taking Shador Sanders at three are
two better off taking like Travis Hunter. If you're there,
you're trying to win and at least be competitive. So
I wonder if the coaching staff in the front office,
you know, wants to take a quarterback at three overall,

(21:32):
because there's no guarantee that you'll be coaching them in
a year.

Speaker 1 (21:36):
It's a it's a it's a great point, right, you
want he needs to win and win win. Now, So
where do you think Shador goes?

Speaker 7 (21:44):
I mean I thought the Giants. I still think it's
definitely on the table. I mean I don't think, but
I start thinking with the owner, it's like, oh, we
need a quarterback, we need a quarterback. But if you're
the owner, Travis Hunter equals something similar. It gives them
someone to sell with Malik Neighbors again, star power. It
just helps build the team. I mean, it's the right
pick to make, assuming he's there. I mean he also

(22:06):
could go at two, and then would they take Abdull Carter.
I mean they've drafted and they've signed a bunch of
defensive linemen. It's honestly the strength of their team. So
I don't know. I mean, I will say, you go three,
but if he doesn't go three, you know, I guess
the Raiders would be a conversation. We've seen Pete you
know before sign a guy. I saw him a ticker

(22:29):
yesterday that they the plan is still to extend. You
know Smith, you know, he's just like a high, highly
paid bridge veteran quarterback, kind of Alex Smith style. And
maybe you take Shador and you just let them compete.
But yeah, if he doesn't go there, you know, then
I think we started talking to Steelers, the Rams, teams
like that, because there are a lot of teams that

(22:49):
just we know for a fact we're not going to
take quarterbacks.

Speaker 1 (22:53):
Stug Gottleib Show here on Fox Sports Radio. That's the
voice of John Middlecoff. Okay, what do you who do
you think is the most interesting team in the draft?

Speaker 7 (23:06):
Probably the Browns. I mean how often listen, we've all
seen the Deshaun Watson thing from a year ago. It
was a complete swing and a miss and disaster. But
usually teams until the guy's off, the team just kind
of give the coach speak and that includes the GM
and the owner. I mean, Jimmy has them. Didn't even
it was like, yeah, swinging a miss So to me,
that tells like he basically just told everybody Deshaun Watson's

(23:29):
never playing another snap here, and they what's their quarterback situation?
I mean, the Falcons are kind of playing hardball. They're like, yeah,
we'll just keep Cousins. Maybe they're maybe actually they're telling
the truth because the owners so madd he gave him
that money, Like, I'm not just cutting him, no way.
So if he's not available, what if they kiss? I

(23:49):
don't know. They could do anything. They could take Travis Hunter,
they could take shandor Sanders, they can take up Duel Carter.
They're pretty big wild cards that usually high in the draft.
That's not the case. You've got a pretty good idea.
You know, look, we know what the Titans want to do.
But with the Browns, I mean, I'd give you three
scenarios and you'd believe them all.

Speaker 1 (24:15):
I thought the moment he got hurt, the moment he
got hurt, I thought, no way he ever plays again.
Then uh, he renegotiated his deal or whatever. But then
he retears the Achilles tend and you're like, yeah, now
he's not gonna play football anymore. Then you hear the
owner come out You're like, yeah, there's there's no way,
how hi.

Speaker 7 (24:35):
Does that happen? Never say something like that?

Speaker 1 (24:38):
Was never never, never, ever, I've never heard of that.

Speaker 7 (24:45):
I mean, remember Cashman last year took some shots at
John Carlos. He's like he's got to That was like whoa.
And Stanton's a good you know, a contributing member to
the high level team. You know, Watson is bad. And
I mean, I'm sure most people listening here in you
have seen like the stats, like objectively one of the

(25:06):
worst quarterbacks over the last like two decades in his
time playing. And the other thing is, you know, obviously
the Achilles is gone, but he athletically looked like a
shell of himself, even moving around before he heard that
his arm clearly the shoulder issue was a problem. His
arm strength looked terrible. He was a shot fighter before
the Achilles ever went. Now, yeah, I don't think he's

(25:29):
ever playing in the NFL again.

Speaker 1 (25:30):
I don't think I don't think so. I don't think
so either, I really, I really do not. This is
a doug outlib show. Here on Fox Sports Radio, Jerry
Jones had something really interesting to say about the negotiations
with Micah Parsons. I want you to listen to this
and and again, John, you just listen. Tell me what

(25:51):
you think. This is Jerry Jones talking about negotiating with
his young star Michael Parsons.

Speaker 5 (25:57):
Term, guarantees, money, all those things. We've uh had a
meeting of the mind zone.

Speaker 1 (26:03):
Why have you not had the same beeting mind with
a lady?

Speaker 8 (26:07):
Well, I don't know that. Uh.

Speaker 5 (26:09):
You know it's uh, I'm the one who has signed
the check and Michael's one has to agree to it.

Speaker 6 (26:14):
So that's the straightest.

Speaker 5 (26:16):
Way to get there, is, uh, the one writ in
the check and the one agree into it talking. And
that's the principle that's involved here. And I understand all
the other issues. But as you know, it's not uncommon
for me to negotiate your that too with players, and
I've done that, and so we are there. I don't

(26:36):
view it as urgent at all. You know. Some say, well,
using the basis that they're earlier you get something done
the cheaper, whether earlier you get something done, A lot
of times the woman states you mighty, and you mine
want to see a few more cards play, not just
with that particular negotiation, but with the whole team, and

(26:59):
so I know I'm kind of being a little.

Speaker 6 (27:03):
Defensive here, but the idea.

Speaker 5 (27:07):
That the only success is getting a contract done in
an early time is incorrect. And I'd rather pay more
and get it right.

Speaker 1 (27:23):
Here's the two things I heard in that. Okay, I
heard at the end. I'd rather pay more and get
it right, which is probably why he's waited so long
on some of these DAK deals. Again, and we can
agree to disagree with it. It's right, but that's probably
his logic. Pind it. The other part is you cut
out the agent because the agent is making ridiculous asks
and you're trying to go like, dude, is this you

(27:44):
or is this the agent? Because he's asking for money
you're never going to get. Did you hear the same thing?

Speaker 7 (27:48):
Yeah, it sounds crazy because it's him and god, he
kind of found its kind of old, you know, typical
Jerry energy.

Speaker 5 (27:55):
You know.

Speaker 7 (27:56):
Now maybe that's in the late nights in Porida, but
you know Jerry's agent a little bit. You know, we
have a lot of hold ins. Now, I thought last
year with a Yuk you know t J. Watt. These
guys negotiate straight up with the gms and owners like
the conversations are ongoing, that's not as crazy. I do
think the comment I'd rather pay more and get it

(28:17):
right is kind of crazy. I mean the whole goal
if you're the team, especially with the guy like a
superstar player, is to like I mean every ten I
mean we start talking one hundred million plus guarantees, saving
ten to fifteen million dollars on the guarantees can buy
you an extra starting player, and I think that's where

(28:37):
Jerry like obviously his personality and ability to negotiate has
been a strength as a businessman, But I do think
the timing and stuff in a division with like Howie Roseman,
who's always doing these deals early and saving money and
having a team that's much more, much deeper, it's kind
of hurt the Cowboys. I mean, we saw last year
couple injuries and they look like a sheld themselves. So yeah,

(29:01):
I think the Cowboys are just in this weird spot
with his owner, who's, you know, legendary personality in the league,
but some now Davis similarities. It's not apples apples, but
I think Jerry's kind of losing his fastball here.

Speaker 1 (29:15):
Yeah, I sort of agree with you, So Donug Gotlib

to a game.

Speaker 4 (30:39):
This is game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show.

Speaker 1 (30:46):
What do you got there?

Speaker 2 (30:47):
Dan Byer Doug, it's Tuesday. That means we have got
rank them all right. Doug ranked the four final four
teams heading to San Antonio.

Speaker 1 (30:58):
Four Final fourteen. I'm gonna put Duke at one. I
love Duke at one, Houston at place everyone be quiet,
Houston at two.

Speaker 2 (31:17):
Interesting.

Speaker 1 (31:20):
I'll put Auburn at three and Florida at four. And
I do have Florida and Duke in my Brackett meet
in nash shampup came I just again, like that doesn't
mean because Houston is always you know, one of those
games where they can't buy a bucket away, but man,
their defense is just suffocating. Now, these are also, you know,

(31:41):
for the best defensive teams in the country as well,
so they're all really good defensively.

Speaker 2 (31:46):
Florida is that win over Auburn and the regular season,
you wonder if Auburn's gonna try to get revenge. But
then Jenni Broom's health is obviously a big question. Speaking
of Jenni Broome, he may appear on these rankings. For
the next question, Doug, rank the three best players you've
seen in this NCAA tournament.

Speaker 1 (32:10):
Oh, I think we got two of them, So I'm
trying to think who the third would be. Walter I'll go.
I'll go Jani Broome at three, Walt Clayton Junior at two,

(32:32):
and Cooper Flag at one.

Speaker 2 (32:33):
All three first Team All Americans this past season. Flag
and Broom were unanimous picks to the first team. All Right, Doug,
switching gears. As we are now in April, NBA playoffs
will be starting in a couple of weeks. Doug, rank
your top three NBA title contenders.

Speaker 1 (32:53):
M top three NBA title contenders Thunder three Calves, two
Celtics one.

Speaker 2 (33:07):
To be the champ. You got to beat the champ. Jason,
by the way, is loving the Celtics documentary on HBO.
In fact, he sent me sent me a text last night,
Yes about it very much. Recommended you have episode nineteen
now or where are you in the documentary?

Speaker 8 (33:26):
Being with them drafting lambias and then the t's is
what happens next. It's a great doc It gets very
much into the racial conflict of the city. You have
players saying I played for the Celtics, not for the
city of Boston, and that dynamic alone is interesting. But

(33:48):
it's great, good footage.

Speaker 2 (33:52):
I watched a documentary on the Joplin Tornado last night
on net.

Speaker 1 (33:57):
I did I have friends that live in Joplin, And
it's really good.

Speaker 5 (34:00):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (34:00):
I was a bad one, wasn't it.

Speaker 5 (34:02):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (34:02):
Yeah, awful? Was five? Yeah? Yeah, just just the the
storytelling was was very powerful, I will say in the Yeah,
the storm just here? Was that like nine? It was
twenty eleven? Yes, so all right, Moving on, Doug ranked
the three best days for NFL football. Uh, there's a

(34:30):
method to this one, and I'll tell you why.

Speaker 1 (34:32):
Okay, I think three best days. Yes, the divisional what's
the one.

Speaker 2 (34:44):
That's divisional rounds where the top seeds are finally playing?

Speaker 1 (34:48):
Before that, Yeah, wildcard weekend was it has kind of
been a downer. I'm gonna go division round Although that's
a weekend, right, It's you mean day because I know
you want Christmas Day because I do think Christmas Day
is one and Thanksgiving Day is two.

Speaker 2 (35:00):
Okay, I think Sunday of Week one is amazing.

Speaker 1 (35:03):
That was the other one. That was the other one,
So let's do that. Because there's no divisional day, I
can't do Sunday. Week one is three, Thanksgiving is two,
Christmas is one.

Speaker 2 (35:14):
And that's on the heels of the NFL. Now playing
three games on Christmas this time around makes it a
little bit easier because Christmas falls on a Thursday this year.
But two of those games will be on Netflix, one
will be on Amazon. But we've had Christmas triple headers before.
It's just this past year because Christmas was on a Wednesday,
they had to finagle the schedule and make the Steelers

(35:37):
and Texans and Ravens and Chiefs, I'll play on Saturday
before so then they could go and play on Wednesday.
And it was all crazy. Final question, Doug, I'm assuming here,
I don't know, but I'm assuming you'll be in San Antonio.
So I was going to have you rank the three
things that you need to do in San Antone for
the final four weekend.

Speaker 1 (35:58):
It's just going to be very strange for me. Right
I'm doing some things with the NABC, but you know,
I've I've worked this Uh, I've worked this before, you know,
I just have. And last year, you know I was
doing Last year, I was coaching AAU team in Glendale

(36:18):
and calling the games. No, Glendale was where the games were,
so they was like in Mesa, which if you know
anything about Phoenix, it's like an hour between the two.
So I haven't had a chance to like just catch
my breath and catch up with people. So, uh, three
is kibbets as my people say, the yakata yakas others
would say. Two would be, uh, just walk down the

(36:42):
riverwalk like I know it's man made. I know you're
not supposed to swim in it, and somebody on the
winning team will swim in it. And number one is
I love how you just walk over to the game
like you're at your hotel, you're at the Riverwalk, you
put down a beer, you just walked in. I'm gonna
enjoy just being a fan, just watch seeing the sport
that I've covered for so long and now a part of.

Speaker 2 (37:06):
And don't forget to leave a red bottle of red
wine on Greg Popovich's front doorstep.

Speaker 4 (37:11):
Mmmm, this is game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show.

Speaker 1 (37:19):
It's the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio Okay,
coming up next hour. The coaching carousel continues in college
basketball's next
