ticket and go watch my beloved Angels win a World Series. Instead,
my dad's like, dude, you can't be my son, best
team player on the team and not practice. And I

was like, yeah, I can. It's the Angels going to
win the World Series. So I missed the first couple
of innings because we were practiced. Then I went back
to his house and I watched Angels win the World
Series and you know it's the old Ah, Yeah, they'll
be back, They'll be fine.

has been an interesting one for somebody like me. I
don't know shit about basketball. I don't get into the
weeds of why things happened or game to game, but
I do follow closely how things are covered, and this

weird thing happened. The Lakers were having like a below
average season, told the public they weren't making any major trades.
All of a sudden, they make the biggest trade, one
of the biggest trades in the history of the league.
And the immediate reaction was, Okay, this is they got
their next superstar, but there's a trade for the future.
This season they're punting on this season. They don't have

a big man, they can't defend. But it's gonna be
cool because Lucas is gonna be a Laker and it's
gonna be great.

And then between then and the start of the playoffs,
the Lakers became like championship contenders in people's eyes, so
much so that every single expert on ESPN chows them
to beat the Timberwolves. I said to you before the season,
before the series, on this podcast, Doug, I thought Anthony
Edward was the next Jordan. Why why is everyone on

the Lakers? These stats say that the betting public lost
a ton of money on the Lakers. I just I
and now and now that the season's over, they basically
lost the series for the original reason everyone was saying
they were going to punt the season. They didn't have
a big man and they didn't play defense.

Yeah yeah, So so can I pat myself on the
back and say I was right all along? I mean,
I don't believe I hopped on the Lakers are going
to win a championship or be championship contender bandwagon if
I did, I And look, some of it does come
down to matchups. But yeah, again, I just think it's

that it's what happened was you know, there was such
a disparity because of the injuries in Dallas with the trade,
and because regular season is just not the postseason, and
the defense and toughness matters so much more in the

postseason than it does the regular season.

me when we were I was talking about this with
a friend. You are who your best player is. If

has been an interesting one for somebody like me. I
don't know shit about basketball. I don't get into the
weeds of why things happened or game to game, but
I do follow closely how things are covered, and this

weird thing happened. The Lakers were having like a below
average season, told the public they weren't making any major trades.
All of a sudden, they make the biggest trade, one
of the biggest trades in the history of the league.
And the immediate reaction was, Okay, this is they got
their next superstar, but there's a trade for the future.
This season they're punting on this season. They don't have
(10:35):
a big man, they can't defend. But it's gonna be
cool because Lucas is gonna be a Laker and it's
gonna be great.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
Right.
Speaker 6 (10:42):
And then between then and the start of the playoffs,
the Lakers became like championship contenders in people's eyes, so
much so that every single expert on ESPN chows them
to beat the Timberwolves. I said to you before the season,
before the series, on this podcast, Doug, I thought Anthony
Edward was the next Jordan. Why why is everyone on
(11:02):
the Lakers? These stats say that the betting public lost
a ton of money on the Lakers. I just I
and now and now that the season's over, they basically
lost the series for the original reason everyone was saying
they were going to punt the season. They didn't have
a big man and they didn't play defense.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Yeah yeah, So so can I pat myself on the
back and say I was right all along? I mean,
I don't believe I hopped on the Lakers are going
to win a championship or be championship contender bandwagon if
I did, I And look, some of it does come
down to matchups. But yeah, again, I just think it's

that it's what happened was you know, there was such
a disparity because of the injuries in Dallas with the trade,
and because regular season is just not the postseason, and
the defense and toughness matters so much more in the
(12:06):
postseason than it does the regular season.

You know.

And I've said this before, and it was said to
me when we were I was talking about this with
a friend. You are who your best player is. If
your best player is a non defender, and you are
your three best players are non defenders, what do you
think is gonna happen? So it is a weird thing
to watch, it's a weird thing to cover, it's a
weird thing to comment on. But I guess it's the

Lakers right there is there's no it's also Lebron too, right,
Like when Lebron was awesome in game whatever it was four,
you know, or when Lebron has an awesome game, Hey, guys,
Lebron is still the best player in the league. When
Lebron's terrible, it's he's a choker, or he's not Jordan,

or he's whatever. It's just that there is no happy
medium anymore in bring sports, and the Lakers, because they
have Lebron, James and now Luca as well, are the
perfect example.

They embody that.

Yeah, speaking of Lebron, So this sound bite's been making
the rounds. He was asked, I think the questions in
the SoundBite about what needs to be done to the
roster this summer.
Speaker 8 (13:19):
Basically from mid January on, right when Ady got injured,
you got started playing a lot of centerless basketball and
not required a lot from you and Doe and Ruie
and then Vando once he got back just from a
physical like taxing standpoint. How how tough was that for
the last three and a half months to play that.
Speaker 6 (13:39):
Style and do you feel like that caught up at
all in this series?
Speaker 3 (13:44):
No comment, I'll never say that because my guy Ady
said what he needed and he was gone the following week,
so I got no comment.

My point is he was kind of tongue in cheek,
but he was one of those tongue in cheek but
serious things. The weird thing is is that he's putting
it off on the front office. He's in that comment,
he's saying that he was virtually unaware of that Ad
was going to be traded, and it's kind of a

dig at at Luca, who's a new teammate, Like it's
such a weird thing to say after a season.

Yeah, it's it's kind of classical Lebron. You know, he's
he's he already reached the status a long time ago
of not of being able to kind of say and
do what he wants. But it's just I think he
thinks he's one being funny and two making a point,
and he's kind of doing the I told you soaths

that thing, which it's just weird. It's it's really weird.
I can't explain other than it's really weird. But it's
Lebron and he's just weird.

The Bill Belichick thing, I don't know if you've read,
but so somebody did reporting and I don't know if

here that that Jordan Bill Belichick's girlfriend has acquired nine
million dollars in assets and say got together. Steven Belichick's

wife publicly made comments that she ruined the CBS thing,
and then Charles Barkley said this to Dan Patrick.

Well, this is a very slippery subject for me because
Bill is one of my really good friends. I don't
I'm not sure what's going on. You know, he's been
a great friend for me for a long time. We've
been friends. As he coached for the Browns, I think
he got to be very careful right now. They're just
starting to be on a very slippery slope. He's the

greatest football coach ever for him and Nick Saban for college,
Nick Saban for Bill the NFL. Yeah, from what I'm hearing,
it's starting to be a very slippery slope. And I
never talk about people's personal relationship. That's another rule I got.
But I will admit I'm a little concerned with some

of the stuff that's going on, and I might actually
reach out to him and make sure everything's good. But
I am concerned from what I'm hearing, because yeah, it's
not a good look right now, I'll admit that.

See, I think that Charles actually articulates us pretty well.
Like everybody looking from the outside looking in, it just
looks like an old dude who's getting taken advantage of.
We all know why he's in the relationship. We all
know how tough that is to give up. But there
is something weird about it. It's hard to put a
finger on it, but there's something strange that could potentially

be bad news for Bill Belgium.

Yeah, I think I don't know if it's bad. It's
just the whole thing is weird. You know, the whole
thing is weird, Like she's controlling this thing. And maybe
that's the magic to Belichick, make it, make her be
the bad guy and he can just be the happy

getting along.

But it's definitely weird.

Definitely so the Belichick girlfriend situation, Lebron's odd quote after
the game, and this weird thing that Lakers prognosticators have
been on since the trade.

I think the weird thing about the Lakers and what
they've been on since the trade, I just I think
that's so so so strange, so so so strange, so strange,
so strange that people just completely flipped.
