Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottlin Show. Here's in
the bonus with Doug Gottlee golig.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Show with the Bonus, Fox Sports Radio, iHeartRadio app Welcome in.
So the Angel stink. And while most of you are like, okay,
and why is that surprise, it's not, you know, I mean,
(00:31):
I wish we could have gotten through. May you know
they got a five game losing streak. They've lost seven
of their last eight. Uh, it's it's bad, it's ugly
and stop me heard this before, but Mike Trout is
banged up.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
It's weird that this works.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
The Squint I joked about it was yesterday, Jay stew
or the day before. I joked about it, like, yeah,
I don't know if you realize the Angel season has turned.
I actually screen shadow when they're in first place, which
wasn't that didn't feel it goes that long ago.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
I think it was like the twelfth of April.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
They were in first place and then all of a
sudden they lost three in a row, and then four
or five, and then you know, uh, seven of nine,
and then they win one, so it's seven of ten.
Then then those five and we're like, oh now, they're
in last place. There is nothing that's been more clockwork
in my adult life than the Angels falling apart, which
(01:26):
brings me to a rant that I have and I
have prepared for you, Jayso, which is in two thousand
and two, I was playing for my late father's.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Basically like a travel team.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
He used to be able to play exhibition against exhibition
games against teams of former college stars. It's exactly what
we did, and we were playing. Everybody played UCLA beat UCLA.
We had practice at Ocean Meuwa High School. The night
of Game seven, I was gonna go and buy a
ticket and go watch my beloved Angels win a World Series. Instead,
my dad's like, dude, you can't be my son, best
team player on the team and not practice. And I
(02:00):
was like, yeah, I can. It's the Angels going to
win the World Series. So I missed the first couple
of innings because we were practiced. Then I went back
to his house and I watched Angels win the World
Series and you know it's the old Ah, Yeah, they'll
be back, They'll be fine.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
There'll be another time.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
That was twenty three years ago, and it feels like
there'll be another twenty three to twenty five years before they're.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
Back there, be sure to catch live editions of The
Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Let's get to what the Box says and now. Every
day at this time in the Bonus Podcast, we try
and find something interesting set in an earlier show, bring
it back, give our own commentary on it.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
Here's Colin Cowherd talk about JJ Breddick.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
Bro It's not the moment to be the coolest, smartest
guy in the room. You went heavy small ball with
the oldest star in the league. You didn't sub him,
and Lebron looked tired in Game four in the end,
and he looked tired last night. Plus Minnesota, which was
already a bigger team, leaned into their size. Rudy Gobert,
(03:11):
a defensive player, might as well have been Wilt Chamberlain
last night. He was unstoppable. That's on coaching. And by
the way, JJ, what is Maxy Kleeber doing on the
floor late? This was a coaching mismatch. Julius Randall and
McDaniels Gobert. They outplayed the Lakers players and the Tea
(03:32):
Wolves own the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter is not
just the stars quarter, it's the coaching quarter. This is
not a complicated breakdown. Better coach, better decisions, a more
complete roster, and better fourth quarters.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Yeah, I don't know a fourth Like what is MAXI Clearer?
Maxic Cleper's a big who can shoot. It's look when
it backfires and it doesn't work, well, everybody has has
their fun with it and says, you.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
Know, it didn't work. Should he have subbed in Game four?
Speaker 2 (04:07):
Yeah? The small ball thing that people are now like, oh,
how could you do this?
Speaker 3 (04:11):
That's the way.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
In which Rudy Gobert has been sent out of the
playoffs year after year in Utah and in Minnesota is
just like that. And Max Kleeber played for Dallas last year. Right,
it's all part of like it's where the where it
all came from.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
So I just.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Again, I understand that it's easy to trounds on JJ,
And we talked about JJ in the radio show. He
does himself no favors because he's always been arrogant with
his style and approach. You know, it's been arrogant as
a player, rightfully, So he's a great college player, arrogant
in terms of his beliefs when he was a player,
(04:54):
when he was interviewed, arrogant on TV, and arrogant now
as a coach. He's really good at all these things things,
but he gives the arrogance and so extead of explaining
it away the way I'm explaining it, he just turns
to become negative douchey JJ, which probably ultimately doesn't matter
because you know, he's gonna make it about the media,
(05:16):
and you know the negativity of the media. That seems
to work these days, but we all see it. Here's
Dan Patrick talking about Rudy Gobert.
Speaker 5 (05:24):
I'd like to take this moment and to stare into
the camera to Rudy Gobert. I apologize for saying you're
the most overrated player in the NBA for one night.
Speaker 6 (05:38):
It's a temporary apology.
Speaker 5 (05:39):
Very very temporary. Rudy Gobert look like a chem Elijah on,
he looked like Shack, he looked like Tim Duncan. Rudy
Gobert had twenty seven points and twenty four rebounds. Because yes,
I said the same thing. He dominated twelve to fifteen
from the floor He's the third player in the last
(06:02):
fifty years to have a twenty twenty in a playoff
game while shooting at least eighty percent from the floor.
He was great. The rest of the timber Wolves not
so good, and they still won. The Lakers shot better
from two point three point free throw line, and they
ended up losing, and you say goodbye to the Lakers
(06:23):
what could have been? But to Rudy Gobert, once again,
congratulations on a wonderful performance against a front line that
I think I probably could have gotten ten rebounds. But
once again, I mean, come on.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
Yeah, I mean, look what you have to balance out there.
When you're playing small, you don't have a big And
the big thing is the Lakers have tried to play
small with previous coaching staffs. It doesn't work. As Lebron
James can't guard people in the post.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
He can't.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
He's an awful post defender. He's just a bad post
player period. You know, it's something he never evolved in
his game, he never developed in his game.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
But he's a bat.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
The secret to Draymond Green is that Draymond Green, who
if he shoots, he doesn't shoot. He can literally guard
centers we just saw the other night. Was she guyin
right going for the game when he bucket? That's not
Lebron James in any former fashion.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
None.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
And that's the part that gets a beat and they
try to play small. Here's the bar Arrington talking about
the notorious prank color Jax Obrich.
Speaker 7 (07:36):
I've done some pretty pretty petty things in my day
that would bring reproach on my family name when I
was in like middle school, even maybe had a moment
or two in high school. At twenty one, you're no
longer able to be looked at as a kid or
as a child.
Speaker 4 (07:54):
That's you.
Speaker 7 (07:55):
You're making an adult decision for one, for two, how
how and titled and how much of a snotty nosed
little bitch brat are you to be sitting there at
twenty one years old crank calling people on on draft day,
and even if you were being on that time, because
social media has made it okay to be more a
(08:18):
moron in public, and you get praised and you get followers,
and you get influenced by being a moron and doing
things that morons would do. So I'm not even gonna
go too far down the lane of saying that this
kid is is bitch made because of doing doing things
that would make him go viral. The reason why I
(08:42):
think he's bitch made is because you endangered your father's
and your family's ability to be able to make a living.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
Uh yeah, I guess man. You know it's I just.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
I'd like to be outraged by it, but I can't be.
It's so fake to be outraged by a prank call
to Shoodoor Sanders of the things we do that are
fake in life being outraged by especially when I don't
think anybody deserves to have their heart kind of ripped
out that way. But you Door Sanders, maybe just a
(09:29):
little bit. That's what the Fox said say.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
Let's find out who What's annoying? Jason Stewart.
Speaker 6 (09:49):
And now it's your annoying, Hey, Doug. This Lakers season
has been an interesting one for somebody like me. I
don't know shit about basketball. I don't get into the
weeds of why things happened or game to game, but
I do follow closely how things are covered, and this
(10:13):
weird thing happened. The Lakers were having like a below
average season, told the public they weren't making any major trades.
All of a sudden, they make the biggest trade, one
of the biggest trades in the history of the league.
And the immediate reaction was, Okay, this is they got
their next superstar, but there's a trade for the future.
This season they're punting on this season. They don't have
(10:35):
a big man, they can't defend. But it's gonna be
cool because Lucas is gonna be a Laker and it's
gonna be great.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
Right.
Speaker 6 (10:42):
And then between then and the start of the playoffs,
the Lakers became like championship contenders in people's eyes, so
much so that every single expert on ESPN chows them
to beat the Timberwolves. I said to you before the season,
before the series, on this podcast, Doug, I thought Anthony
Edward was the next Jordan. Why why is everyone on
(11:02):
the Lakers? These stats say that the betting public lost
a ton of money on the Lakers. I just I
and now and now that the season's over, they basically
lost the series for the original reason everyone was saying
they were going to punt the season. They didn't have
a big man and they didn't play defense.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Yeah yeah, So so can I pat myself on the
back and say I was right all along? I mean,
I don't believe I hopped on the Lakers are going
to win a championship or be championship contender bandwagon if
I did, I And look, some of it does come
down to matchups. But yeah, again, I just think it's
(11:45):
that it's what happened was you know, there was such
a disparity because of the injuries in Dallas with the trade,
and because regular season is just not the postseason, and
the defense and toughness matters so much more in the
(12:06):
postseason than it does the regular season.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
You know.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
And I've said this before, and it was said to
me when we were I was talking about this with
a friend. You are who your best player is. If
your best player is a non defender, and you are
your three best players are non defenders, what do you
think is gonna happen? So it is a weird thing
to watch, it's a weird thing to cover, it's a
weird thing to comment on. But I guess it's the
(12:32):
Lakers right there is there's no it's also Lebron too, right,
Like when Lebron was awesome in game whatever it was four,
you know, or when Lebron has an awesome game, Hey, guys,
Lebron is still the best player in the league. When
Lebron's terrible, it's he's a choker, or he's not Jordan,
(12:53):
or he's whatever. It's just that there is no happy
medium anymore in bring sports, and the Lakers, because they
have Lebron, James and now Luca as well, are the
perfect example.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
They embody that.
Speaker 6 (13:08):
Yeah, speaking of Lebron, So this sound bite's been making
the rounds. He was asked, I think the questions in
the SoundBite about what needs to be done to the
roster this summer.
Speaker 8 (13:19):
Basically from mid January on, right when Ady got injured,
you got started playing a lot of centerless basketball and
not required a lot from you and Doe and Ruie
and then Vando once he got back just from a
physical like taxing standpoint. How how tough was that for
the last three and a half months to play that.
Speaker 6 (13:39):
Style and do you feel like that caught up at
all in this series?
Speaker 3 (13:44):
No comment, I'll never say that because my guy Ady
said what he needed and he was gone the following week,
so I got no comment.
Speaker 6 (13:58):
My point is he was kind of tongue in cheek,
but he was one of those tongue in cheek but
serious things. The weird thing is is that he's putting
it off on the front office. He's in that comment,
he's saying that he was virtually unaware of that Ad
was going to be traded, and it's kind of a
(14:20):
dig at at Luca, who's a new teammate, Like it's
such a weird thing to say after a season.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
Yeah, it's it's kind of classical Lebron. You know, he's
he's he already reached the status a long time ago
of not of being able to kind of say and
do what he wants. But it's just I think he
thinks he's one being funny and two making a point,
and he's kind of doing the I told you soaths
(14:49):
that thing, which it's just weird. It's it's really weird.
I can't explain other than it's really weird. But it's
Lebron and he's just weird.
Speaker 6 (15:02):
The Bill Belichick thing, I don't know if you've read,
but so somebody did reporting and I don't know if
This is true, but it does feed into the narrative
here that that Jordan Bill Belichick's girlfriend has acquired nine
million dollars in assets and say got together. Steven Belichick's
(15:24):
wife publicly made comments that she ruined the CBS thing,
and then Charles Barkley said this to Dan Patrick.
Speaker 9 (15:35):
Well, this is a very slippery subject for me because
Bill is one of my really good friends. I don't
I'm not sure what's going on. You know, he's been
a great friend for me for a long time. We've
been friends. As he coached for the Browns, I think
he got to be very careful right now. They're just
starting to be on a very slippery slope. He's the
(15:57):
greatest football coach ever for him and Nick Saban for college,
Nick Saban for Bill the NFL. Yeah, from what I'm hearing,
it's starting to be a very slippery slope. And I
never talk about people's personal relationship. That's another rule I got.
But I will admit I'm a little concerned with some
(16:18):
of the stuff that's going on, and I might actually
reach out to him and make sure everything's good. But
I am concerned from what I'm hearing, because yeah, it's
not a good look right now, I'll admit that.
Speaker 6 (16:32):
See, I think that Charles actually articulates us pretty well.
Like everybody looking from the outside looking in, it just
looks like an old dude who's getting taken advantage of.
We all know why he's in the relationship. We all
know how tough that is to give up. But there
is something weird about it. It's hard to put a
finger on it, but there's something strange that could potentially
(16:55):
be bad news for Bill Belgium.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
Yeah, I think I don't know if it's bad. It's
just the whole thing is weird. You know, the whole
thing is weird, Like she's controlling this thing. And maybe
that's the magic to Belichick, make it, make her be
the bad guy and he can just be the happy
(17:20):
old seventy seven year seventy year old guy who's just
getting along.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
But it's definitely weird.
Speaker 6 (17:27):
Definitely so the Belichick girlfriend situation, Lebron's odd quote after
the game, and this weird thing that Lakers prognosticators have
been on since the trade.
Speaker 2 (17:41):
I think the weird thing about the Lakers and what
they've been on since the trade, I just I think
that's so so so strange, so so so strange, so strange,
so strange that people just completely flipped.
Speaker 3 (18:02):
And I don't know if it's.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
Strange that it's just the entire way in which we
handle Lakers stuff is an.
Speaker 1 (18:13):
Why are we.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
Doing this.
Speaker 6 (18:17):
Because we can looks like the Kelsey Brothers are posting
new podcasts, which means it's good for us, because Travis
likes to drop a bunch of f bombs. This one
was about the should or Sanders situation.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
What do you think, Trav? Why do you think should
or Sanders? I think whoever's a.
Speaker 10 (18:36):
Fucking anonymous person that's fucking saying this should fucking come
out and say who they were and what you chest, Like,
what the fuck is that about? Like, if you're gonna
fucking leak that type of shit, fucking be the one
that says that, Yeah, it just didn't go well for us,
you know, don't fucking say that we're anonymous. You know,
that's so fucking lame, Like, like, I don't know, I
just feel like there's no validity to it. I'm not
(18:58):
sure why you dropped. I'm not sure you know, whether
it was the interviews or whether it was stuff that
they saw on film. What I saw in film, I
thought he was a way higher pick.
Speaker 2 (19:07):
Yeah, why can we say it?
Speaker 3 (19:10):
Why can we play it for you? Because we can.
I just I do think that he is.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
I don't think anybody would say on film he wasn't
a higher pick than a fifth round pick. But it's
all that other stuff. It's all that is stuff that's
a lot to unpack. That's why we can play for
you right here on the Doug Goatlip Show Podcast.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
Thanks so much for listening.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
Reminded the Doug Goatlieb Show Radio show every day three
