So what happens when teams lose is we start to

discuss the dearly departed, Right, we start to discuss while
the body's still warm. We still have you know, thunder
to talk about, pasture to talk about. And it's gonna
be a hard series to get people interested in, just
be because it won't be followed up by the ratings wins,
because they're no name teams. I mean again, you can

take this as a slight if you'd like, and I
have obviously, I was just in Oklahoma this morning, right,
so I spent a lot of time there. I have
friends in the organization and what happens is people who
are can be really sensitive can take things in a
way where they'll go, oh, well you just you just
a jerk. You just try it. Like no, these are

the two smallest markets ever to meet up in NBA Championship.
There's small markets, doesn't matter, has nothing to do. This
is a lot like college athletics when we talk about
conference rey alignment. You're like, well, we've won this conference.
We've won this week, Like nobody cares how many people
actually watch when you play? Right, It's like no one

actually outside of me said this this year. It's like
everybody for years talked about like why do we care
so much about Texas? Why do we like, hey, what
was the number one rated game this year? Texas Georgia.
When Texas is back, the numbers are with them. Anyway,
won't be the most heavily watched, but we'll discuss it

a bunch. But I do think the Knicks are interesting
because like so many teams, and we've had a bunch.
The Atlanta Hawks went to the Eastern Conference Finals, right,
you can kind of go through the Philadelphia seventy six
ers go in the Eastern Conference Finals. You have teams
that it can be a little bit rare that they
got there and then are they one step away, or

they can try to make one big move. Let's talk
about the dearly depart of the New York Knicks. The
athletic as a writer, I think he's really talented. Got
him Fred Katz. He combined with James Edwards and they
wrote this piece on the future of the Knicks. Publicly,
Knicks players made veiled comments all season about the poor
communication causing their inconsistencies. Behind the scenes, they and coaches

expressed frustration with towns defensive habits, less concerned with his
talent level, more with his process on that end. Too often,
Towns executed incorrect coverages without communicating why he did it.
After it became a theme, players worried Towns didn't grasp
the importance of the matter. So what happens is you

start lobbing grenades at Karl Anthony Towns and the defensive
metrics are pretty obvious. He's not a very good defender.
He does bring offense in space, and as I said
when the trade was made, I don't know if it
makes of a championship team, but it fits. Considering Jalen
Brunson is probably the best physical small guard in the
league at getting and scoring tough twos. Okay, you know,

getting paint twos. And now you have a big who's
capable of shooting from three and getting his own shot.
Here's Jellen Brunson. He had this exchange with a reporter
about Tom Thibodeau after the game on Saturday.

You talk about the confidence. Obviously, I feel like nobody
takes more criticism than that, and this team obviously has
turned around during his tenure. Do you kind of feel
that going forward he's the same guy tolift you, guys
the rest of the way that next.

You just asked me if I believe that, if he's
the right guy.

are we doing? You know, what are we doing now?
The flawed to the Knicks is this, right, Their two
best offensive players are their two worst defensive players. And
that's really, really, really hard, if not impossible to navigate

in the NBA these days. You can have one minus defender,
you can't have two and three. Well, that's what the
Lakers have. Right of your best players, because in order
for you to win, you got to have your best
players on the floor or not how the best of
the floor. You can't have two that can't guard anybody.
And Brunson, it's not like he doesn't, but he is

smallish and he's not a great defender. And Carl Towns
is plenty big, but not very athletic and not very
locked in on the defensive end. A lot of people
have brought up this remark from Becky Hammond, who's now
a head coach in the WNBA former NBA assistant. When

she was working on ESPN. This is a year and
a half ago, in December, she said this about.

Brunson, How stuck do you think the Knicks are here
in the Eastern Conference?
Speaker 1 (05:37):
Well, I certainly agree with you.
Speaker 5 (05:38):
They're not getting into that tier. They don't have enough personnel,
they don't have the manpower that they need to hang
with those guys. I think you're going to get a
consistent team like they've been. Their pretty good team. They're
well coached, they're going to be on their defensive game.
But at the end of the day, they don't have
a dude. You got to have a dude. You got
to have a one a dude, and they're missing that.

At the end of the day, if we're just down
to brass taxes.

I'm sorry. I didn't want to disagree with Bick And
today they do have their dude, Jaylen Bronson. Now he's
too small. But here's the thing, and that's that's about you.

If your best player is small, you're not winning. John Stockton,
Allen Iverson, Steve Nash, you could go down the list.

Mean he's the greatest shooter to ever walk the planet.
He's he's in, he's gonna get out.

Well this is where this is where you have people
on the show that have no sense of history. Isaiah
Thomas is small and he won in a much more
physical era. Now where Becky him and is right is
if you are And this is like Steph Curry, if
you're a minus defender, they're gonna hunt one person. You
can't have two that they hunt. You just can't. And

that's where when the Warriors have won, they've thrown out
four tremendous defenders and Steph's gotten better defensively. His success
or lack of success, in my opinion, has nothing to
do with how tall he is, how how strong he
is that he is whatever. It doesn't She's allowed to
have that philosophy. There are people in the NBA who

have that belief. She's not the first one to come
up with it. But again, does it matter that he's
I don't know, six' to? One it? Does it matters
if you have your other best player can't guard a
soul and won't communicate defensively and gets lost in. Whatever

now if you put four other it's like When Allen
iverson went to THE Nba, finals he had four other
junk yard. Dogs now they couldn't score enough and oh,
yeah by the, way they were in The. Lakers like
if you had Gave Allen iverson, another you, know a
big guy of the type Of shaquille, O'Neil it's a different. Story,
Now Ian iverson couldn't be that guy With shaquille. O'Neil
i'm not an. ABSOLUTIST i don't think anybody's too big

i think pointing To brunson as being too small is
the reason for the downfall of The. Knicks sort of.
LAUGHABLE i think what MOST nba, people what most coaches
would tell you is what they've run into is in

order to stop, somebody you can't have both and maybe
even one of those guys on the, floor, Right that's
why they went on runs With duce mcride at the.
Point Now duce McBride doesn't create shots for other. People
he turns the ball over too, much he doesn't get
back defensively, like but he's a dog on the. Basketball
they struggled with both of those guys on the, floor

but they can't score enough when they're not on the.
Floor and navigating that and changing that is what changed
the trajectory of The. Knicks the idea of getting rid
Of Tom thibodeau is, laughable. Honestly the idea of breaking
Up Karl Anthony towns And Jalen brunson one year in also.
Laughable DO i think they can get? Better? Sure if

otherwise you're not in a bad, place and you're gonna get.
BETTER i think other pieces have to be better if
you're gonna be At Jalen brunson is your best. Player

The trophy for m V. P BUT i Think Tyrese
haliburton thought he might be getting the award because he
kind of stepped forward right as THE uh the m
V p was being Announce but, no it Was. Pascal

laughed clapped his. Hands This pacers, team it could Be

pay role in the. League they are in a mid sized,

pacers collectively have shot lights out from three point, range

have against a team that has as many guys who

as we, know the three point shot can have a
huge influence on, games And indiana defends the three fairly,
well so they could have an advantage in that. Department

be a hard series to get people interested in, just
be because it won't be followed up by the ratings wins,
because they're no name teams. I mean again, you can

take this as a slight if you'd like, and I
have obviously, I was just in Oklahoma this morning, right,
so I spent a lot of time there. I have
friends in the organization and what happens is people who
are can be really sensitive can take things in a
way where they'll go, oh, well you just you just
a jerk. You just try it. Like no, these are

the two smallest markets ever to meet up in NBA Championship.
There's small markets, doesn't matter, has nothing to do. This
is a lot like college athletics when we talk about
conference rey alignment. You're like, well, we've won this conference.
We've won this week, Like nobody cares how many people
actually watch when you play? Right, It's like no one
(01:49):
actually outside of me said this this year. It's like
everybody for years talked about like why do we care
so much about Texas? Why do we like, hey, what
was the number one rated game this year? Texas Georgia.
When Texas is back, the numbers are with them. Anyway,
won't be the most heavily watched, but we'll discuss it

a bunch. But I do think the Knicks are interesting
because like so many teams, and we've had a bunch.
The Atlanta Hawks went to the Eastern Conference Finals, right,
you can kind of go through the Philadelphia seventy six
ers go in the Eastern Conference Finals. You have teams
that it can be a little bit rare that they
got there and then are they one step away, or
(02:35):
they can try to make one big move. Let's talk
about the dearly depart of the New York Knicks. The
athletic as a writer, I think he's really talented. Got
him Fred Katz. He combined with James Edwards and they
wrote this piece on the future of the Knicks. Publicly,
Knicks players made veiled comments all season about the poor
communication causing their inconsistencies. Behind the scenes, they and coaches
(02:58):
expressed frustration with towns defensive habits, less concerned with his
talent level, more with his process on that end. Too often,
Towns executed incorrect coverages without communicating why he did it.
After it became a theme, players worried Towns didn't grasp
the importance of the matter. So what happens is you
(03:19):
start lobbing grenades at Karl Anthony Towns and the defensive
metrics are pretty obvious. He's not a very good defender.
He does bring offense in space, and as I said
when the trade was made, I don't know if it
makes of a championship team, but it fits. Considering Jalen
Brunson is probably the best physical small guard in the
league at getting and scoring tough twos. Okay, you know,
(03:41):
getting paint twos. And now you have a big who's
capable of shooting from three and getting his own shot.
Here's Jellen Brunson. He had this exchange with a reporter
about Tom Thibodeau after the game on Saturday.

You talk about the confidence. Obviously, I feel like nobody
takes more criticism than that, and this team obviously has
turned around during his tenure. Do you kind of feel
that going forward he's the same guy tolift you, guys
the rest of the way that next.

Level this is? Is that a real question right now?

You just asked me if I believe that, if he's
the right guy.

The flawed to the Knicks is this, right, Their two
best offensive players are their two worst defensive players. And
that's really, really, really hard, if not impossible to navigate

in the NBA these days. You can have one minus defender,
you can't have two and three. Well, that's what the
Lakers have. Right of your best players, because in order
for you to win, you got to have your best
players on the floor or not how the best of
the floor. You can't have two that can't guard anybody.
And Brunson, it's not like he doesn't, but he is

smallish and he's not a great defender. And Carl Towns
is plenty big, but not very athletic and not very
locked in on the defensive end. A lot of people
have brought up this remark from Becky Hammond, who's now
a head coach in the WNBA former NBA assistant. When

she was working on ESPN. This is a year and
a half ago, in December, she said this about.

Brunson, How stuck do you think the Knicks are here
in the Eastern Conference?
Speaker 1 (05:37):
Well, I certainly agree with you.
Speaker 5 (05:38):
They're not getting into that tier. They don't have enough personnel,
they don't have the manpower that they need to hang
with those guys. I think you're going to get a
consistent team like they've been. Their pretty good team. They're
well coached, they're going to be on their defensive game.
But at the end of the day, they don't have
a dude. You got to have a dude. You got
to have a one a dude, and they're missing that.

At the end of the day, if we're just down
to brass taxes.

I'm sorry. I didn't want to disagree with Bick And
today they do have their dude, Jaylen Bronson. Now he's
too small. But here's the thing, and that's that's about you.

If your best player is small, you're not winning. John Stockton,

He's he's in, he's gonna get out.

Well this is where this is where you have people
on the show that have no sense of history. Isaiah
Thomas is small and he won in a much more
physical era. Now where Becky him and is right is
if you are And this is like Steph Curry, if
you're a minus defender, they're gonna hunt one person. You
can't have two that they hunt. You just can't. And

that's where when the Warriors have won, they've thrown out
four tremendous defenders and Steph's gotten better defensively. His success
or lack of success, in my opinion, has nothing to
do with how tall he is, how how strong he
is that he is whatever. It doesn't She's allowed to
have that philosophy. There are people in the NBA who

have that belief. She's not the first one to come
up with it. But again, does it matter that he's
I don't know, six' to? One it? Does it matters
if you have your other best player can't guard a
soul and won't communicate defensively and gets lost in. Whatever

now if you put four other it's like When Allen
iverson went to THE Nba, finals he had four other
junk yard. Dogs now they couldn't score enough and oh,
yeah by the, way they were in The. Lakers like
if you had Gave Allen iverson, another you, know a
big guy of the type Of shaquille, O'Neil it's a different. Story,
Now Ian iverson couldn't be that guy With shaquille. O'Neil
i'm not an. ABSOLUTIST i don't think anybody's too big

or too, small, uh too fat or too. Tall BUT
i think pointing To brunson as being too small is
the reason for the downfall of The. Knicks sort of.
LAUGHABLE i think what MOST nba, people what most coaches
would tell you is what they've run into is in

order to stop, somebody you can't have both and maybe
even one of those guys on the, floor, Right that's
why they went on runs With duce mcride at the.
Point Now duce McBride doesn't create shots for other. People
he turns the ball over too, much he doesn't get
back defensively, like but he's a dog on the. Basketball
they struggled with both of those guys on the, floor

but they can't score enough when they're not on the.
Floor and navigating that and changing that is what changed
the trajectory of The. Knicks the idea of getting rid
Of Tom thibodeau is, laughable. Honestly the idea of breaking
Up Karl Anthony towns And Jalen brunson one year in also.
Laughable DO i think they can get? Better? Sure if

they can Get gianni's For Carl, town's great do. It
otherwise you're not in a bad, place and you're gonna get.
BETTER i think other pieces have to be better if
you're gonna be At Jalen brunson is your best. Player
AND i think they're, closed BUT i don't think they're there.
