Uh so, guys, you know again, in year one you
learn stuff. In year two you're like, okay, you start
to implement that. So I had a vision of hey,
we should do some team building things, and now we
have it scheduled too. We're gonna do one thing per week.
(01:21):
I'm gonna overload them, you know. When they come to
my house. We gotta play golf. We go whitewater rafting,
which is like an hour and ten from here.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
It's not bad.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
My guy Dale shout out to Daily listens every day.
So today we we did paintball wars.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Nice you guys, Sam, you didn't been paintballing.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
I used to be a big paintballer back when I
was in high school. Had all the gear, the guns,
the you.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
Know, the the.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Clips or whatever, magazines, all the you know everything, the vests.
But I haven't been since I school. But it is
a lot of fun. Uh, welts all over you?
Speaker 2 (01:57):
I do not now.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
I got hit in the unmentionedables, which which was very painful, Yes,
very painful. I don't I don't know if I got a.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
A straight on.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
I think my clothing slowed it down a little bit
because it hurt like a devil. But no, no welting
marks and it was from a distant shot.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
Just wait till tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Yeah, But most of the other guys have welt square
over they got they got hit squarely. I I mean
I I had one round where I was. I was
literally Lee Harvey Oswald. I was I was stiping people,
taking them out. I was amazing.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
Were you guys like in a forest setting? Like what
kind of what kind of course were you on?
Speaker 4 (02:38):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (02:38):
It's like, uh, it's probably a felt like maybe a
five acre property, and like one is like abandoned cars,
one is like you know, one has like all the
climbing apparatuses, and one is like shipping containers and it's
one of each and you kind of rotate all of them.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
It was super fun. By Are you ever been paintballing?
Speaker 5 (03:00):
No, I haven't. I like how you were cautious on
on telling us the location that you were hit. Yeah,
we're so free with the assassination of a president, you know,
to to characterized your shooting skill flowed like a river.
That just just yes.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
And he did go millennial too, and he changed the
meaning of the world. Literally, he said, I was literally
Lee Harvey Oswald.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Yeah, it's more figuratively, it's more figuratively.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
You're right, You're right, you were him in essence.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
I had some magic bullets, though, sometimes. All I'm saying
those bullets are magical. Jaysetu have you have you paintball before?
Speaker 4 (03:39):
Never? Once?
Speaker 1 (03:40):
No, it was fun, It's really fun. Those suckers hurt.
Oh do they hurt?
Speaker 5 (03:47):
That's why I don't want to do it.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
Oh no, no question, it's not. I mean, I get it.
I understand.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
There's a little bit of satism. Like you know, pain
for pleasure is pain pain with the pleasure of playing.
And it's fun. It's it's it's it's adrenaline pumping. It's fun.
It's just expensive. It's expensive hobby.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Yeah, I mean again, if it's a hobby, it's expensive.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
It's a one off for a group of the we did.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
We did bowling last week, did bowling last week, paintball?
Speaker 2 (04:19):
We got some other stuff, all right?
Speaker 3 (04:20):
In some white water rafting. Yeah, man, you got all
the good. You should take your guys up to the
Dell's go to that outdoor.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Uh it's down to the dell.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
I'm sorry, down south of you? Or is it just
always don Dan Dan?
Speaker 1 (04:35):
Can I get a Can I get a virtual fist
pump on the YouTube page?
Speaker 2 (04:38):
Here? Can we just?
Speaker 1 (04:39):
I nailed it? I nailed Thank you. I appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
Down down to the Dell's all right down, it's been
a while. I haven't been there since I was.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
We tought, uh, we tot all right.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
Let's uh, let's get to call a throw back Thursday.
Speaker 6 (04:56):
I don't call it a throwback Thursday.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
Let me just thank you to those of you new
to the show. It's Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 7 (05:04):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
Dan Bayer.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
Loves the fact that he's brilliant about the history of sports.
That's I think this is a little bit of a
show off thing, no question. If I had and I
have really good memory not buyers. If I had that,
I would create different ways to show that off. Whereas
Jason Stewart took his ideas like, hey, I always wanted
to be FM morning DJ guy. I can and we
(05:27):
can look back at at great music and then me
being the movie guy, I get to look back at
the great movies of the year.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
So Jase Stu, what's the year today?
Speaker 4 (05:37):
Thank you Doug. I'll take it from here. We want
to look back at twenty eleven. I want all of
our listeners and everyone participated in the show right now
to think about what you were doing on this day
in twenty eleven. I bet you guys don't know what
happened today, So I'm going to tell you the Dallas
Mavericks upset the Miami Heat to win the NBA Finals
(05:59):
four fourteen years ago to day. Derrek Novinsky was the
leader of the of the MAVs. But let me give
you a couple other names that might ring a bell.
Jason Kidd was he point guard Tyson Chandler who was
drafted out of high school? I think he was. He
went to Domingus High which I once saw in the
(06:20):
Sports Illustrated article described as this an island in a
sea of gangs? No laughs, okay, Jason Terry came off
the bench, Deshaun we were supposed to laugh at That
sounds rather serious. Yeah, no, it's dark humor. JJ Brea
(06:41):
was also on.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Okay, but it's not funny when I say, hey, I
was Lee Harvey Oswald for a minute, and that was
in nineteen sixty three.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
You're literally too soon, bro. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
So wait, by the way, are you talking? Dimingus High
School is an island in is it?
Speaker 5 (06:54):
What?
Speaker 2 (06:54):
In the island of gangs?
Speaker 4 (06:56):
An island in the sea of gangs, as was once
described as side article about Tyson Chandler.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
Oh okay, okay, you you got to go read about
their coach. There's some bad stuff that went on behind
the scenes there too.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
I just I've always loved that description like that. I've
used it many times since. Anyways, Dwayne Wade, Lebron James,
Chris Bosch, the Big Three, they were defeated today and
they were not supposed to ever lose. Remember Lebron James
told us they were going to win what five, six, seven, eight,
eight titles and then they lost. They lost that one,
(07:32):
not three, didn't work out, four, not five, not six,
not seven. Now, Dan Bayer came in during the break
and he said, I'm really looking forward to what you're
going to focus on, because is it going to be
the NBA Finals from twenty eleven or is it going
to be the US Open. So I'm going to give
(07:53):
him the floor right now to tell us all the
exciting things that happened that year in golf.
Speaker 5 (07:57):
And I thought it was an open opportunity, no pun intended,
because of what transpired earlier this year. It was also
twenty eleven was the year that Rory McElroy won his
first career major, taking a softened Congressional and bringing it
to its knees. This just months after blowing his Master's
(08:17):
lead entering the final round on Sunday. So it was
a bit of redemption for Rory McElroy. That Masters ended
up being won by Charles Schwartzel that year. But in
twenty eleven, it was Rory McElroy winning the US Open.
Darren Clark won the Open Championship. The great part about
that was he was still drunk from the night before
when he showed up at his Monday morning press conference.
(08:39):
It was amazing. Keegan Bradley claimed the PGA Championship that
year at the Atlanta Athletic Club, his first and only
major for the current US Ryder Cup captain. But I
thought it was going to be maybe the US Open
because it was Rory McElroy's first major that he won
of his career.
Speaker 4 (08:57):
Yes, and so I had come through you a curveball there.
I will say this, you keep us on our toes.
Things keep coming full circle, right. Rick Carlisle won the
NBA Final NBA Finals eleven years ago today, Rory McElroy
won his first major. Guess who won his only Super
Bowl in February sixth of twenty eleven.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
Yes, bingo, and he beat the team he's now playing for.
Speaker 4 (09:23):
How about that boom.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
Pitt Spurry Steelers.
Speaker 5 (09:27):
Maybe more importantly for that season, Green Bay was dominant
in that following regular season after the NFL lockout, remember
that twenty eleven where we were close to maybe not
having football, but the just lockout ended and we had
football and the Packers went fifteen and one.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
I'm really surprised, Jay Stu that you didn't lead with baseball.
I want the best World Series in our lifetime. Cardinals
were down their last strike twice in Game.
Speaker 4 (09:56):
Six, David Freese.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
Twice, and David Freese was the hero. They end up
winning in seven over the Texas Rangers in another kind
of epic battle, and David Frieze goes on to become
the World Series MVP. Your Saint Louis Cardinals for your
World Series champions in twenty eleven.
Speaker 4 (10:18):
It's another full circle moment actually, because the loser of
that World Series was Ron Washington, and now he's getting
a lot of l's as the manager of the Angels.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
Yeah, before after the rod Washed it was that the
year before or after.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
The cocaine new story came out. I can't remember.
Speaker 4 (10:35):
Oh man, that was rough. Yeah, the Boston Bruins won
the Sandy Cup Final, Dan, you remember that one con
smythe award winner Tim Thomas was one of your favorites.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
I loved Tim Thomas. He was good at Villanova for
that year.
Speaker 5 (10:49):
But no, do you know why? I definitely do remember
that for two reasons. Vancouver came oh so close to
winning the Stanley Cup Final that did not happen. Lost
in in seven games. They were up three to two
in the series. But I also, yes, I also lost.
I also lost my NHL ten season with the Vancouver
(11:14):
Canucks that year to the Boston Bruins in the Stanley
Cup Finals. I played a full eighty two game season
and went through the playoffs and I was dominant, guys,
I was. I was dominant in that game. I jumped
out to an early series lead, and then I started
messing around, and what do you know? I lost Game
seven against the computer on NHL ten. That's true, true story.
(11:38):
We're talking about twenty eleven. Yes, but that was that
was the game. And then I'm like, wow, history repeats
itself that the Bruins upset the Canucks.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
I didn't know what.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
By the way, I didn't know what a knuck was
until right now I looked it up, and it's like
a slang term for a Canadian.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
I thought it was like a type of duck or
something like a waterfowl, like a heron.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Because it sounds like a duck, I guess a Canuck
must be like a duck.
Speaker 4 (12:05):
I have seen the Ducks play the Canucks at the hotpits.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
It's listen, it's a reasonable thing. It is interesting that
the Canuck is a Canadian, and there's also the Montreal
Canadians Canadian, and some ways it's the Canadians against the Canadians.
NCAA basketball that year, Oh don't remind me, Yukon was
your national champion? Was your national champion? They beat Kentucky
(12:27):
in the Final four VCU first four to the final
four took On Butler. Butler played him one of the
ugliest first halfs in NCAA tournament history. In the first
half of the the national championship game, where it was
much like Jason Stewart in high school.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Butler couldn't score.
Speaker 5 (12:46):
I covered that final four Doug I don't know where
you were at that point, but I was there. Yeah,
there were because you had VCU and Butler VC. You
brought a lot of fans. I'll give them credit for that,
but small schools with Butler and Yukon and they weren't
bringing a lot of fans. And then when Kentucky got housted,
Yeah it was. It was a rough weekend for the
Final four and twenty eleven.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
Also, again, I believe that was teaching. McConnell was the
point guard for Arizona when they lost in the Elite
eight to the Huskies. Teacher McConnell the star last night,
there's your full circle moment, Jase two. I knew you'd
like that.
Speaker 4 (13:18):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
Jason.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
Give me the movies, I mean give me the music, sorry,
music of twenty eleven.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
No, I think that Rick Carlisle was holding up the
David Bing Trophy. Is that what it's called? Am I
way off here? David Bing? To what?
Speaker 5 (13:34):
There's the Lady Bing? Larry Well, Larry, I'll bring for
the trophy.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Larry O'Brien, Larry O'Brien.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
He was, he was holding that up when they asked
him what he was listening to on is what do
you call those things? The eyes something I iPod, I
pod on the way to this game and this he
gave this answer surprisingly.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Number three on the Billboard Hot one hundred End of
year list.
Speaker 5 (14:12):
Katy Perry.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
Unfortunately in movies a couple sequels. Harry Potter two was
the grossed three hundred and eighty one million dollars. Transformers
Dark of the Moon was the second highest grossing film.
Twilight's first Twilight film was third, Hangover two, and then
(14:36):
the out of the second or third Pirates of the
Caribbean was fifth fast five to six mission Impossible cars
to Sherlock Holmes, A Game of Shadows and four. In
other words, in terms of even new series, there was
only two of the top ten movies that year. In
twenty eleven, people back like Hollywood just now has forgotten how.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
To make good new movies with new storylines.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
Nope, go back fourteen years ago and a lot of sequels,
A lot of sequels.
Speaker 4 (15:07):
Go back to Katy Perry. This has been the segment
where we went full circle. So Katy Perry, firework. This
is off for I think second album. This wasn't the
album with a eye kissed a girl. So it's the
next one. Firework ascended to three in the Billboard chart.
But I will say full circle moment. Who would have
(15:28):
known that just eleven or fourteen years later she would
be taking a spacecraft up, a billionaire spacecraft up into
the space with a couple other famous rich people, all
women who took way too much credit for being women
up in a spacecraft. And then the best joke that
came from that incident was a meme online that said
(15:49):
that Katy Perry started singing while they were up in space.
No wonder they came down so fast?
Speaker 3 (15:58):
Was it this song? Because the rocket ascended like a firework,
And we can't forget this tune as well. Jason Stewart
has a lot to say about this song. He said,
put that on the list, Sam, put that on the queue.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Now, this is a this is a song about a
school shooting, right.
Speaker 4 (16:26):
I think it is?
Speaker 2 (16:27):
Yeah? Do you know that a buyer?
Speaker 5 (16:30):
Yeah? No, I looked at all the kids in the
pop cakes.
Speaker 2 (16:33):
Baby run, baby run faster than my bullets?
Speaker 5 (16:36):
Oh great?
Speaker 2 (16:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (16:39):
Firstly, Harvey, I'm.
Speaker 1 (16:42):
Just say it like I don't like I I'd like
the song too that I listened to.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
It was like, wait, what.
Speaker 4 (16:49):
Dark Derek lyrics. And then there was this song. Uh.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
I'm not a big fan of Maroon five, but I'll
give him this a little throwback to the.
Speaker 4 (16:58):
Hold On Now. Oh yeah, this is Summer five.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
Last last year they were at Summerfest. I think it
was nothing but Summerfest.
Speaker 4 (17:10):
Oh yeah, yeah, summer Fest.
Speaker 2 (17:12):
A lot of people say Jason moves like Jagger Checker.
Speaker 5 (17:15):
Yeah, this one's got a good groove to it is catchy.
Christina Aguilera on it as well.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
I just I think since the super Bowl performance where
he was shirtless, I'm like, hey, I'm out on this group.
Speaker 5 (17:27):
That performance was not good, but this song is is
all right.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
He moves Mick Jagger stones who still got it? By
the way, light on his feet? Mick Jagger does Mick
Jagger's still light on his feet. I also like Mick
Jagger because it was a made up name that Doug
Heffert had made to fool already on King of Queens
that he worked with the Mick Jager. Sorry, so whatever,
(17:51):
I just hear Mick Jagger. I think of the King
of Queen's episode. I don't think of the Rolling Stones.
I think of that line in King of Queens.
Speaker 4 (17:59):
Maybe a maybe Doug could do a bonding trip next
week and take his team to go karaoke, and then
he can come on the show the next day and says,
say he was literally Mick Jagger last night.
Speaker 5 (18:10):
Oh jeez, you're piling on today, given Doug.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
If you had if you had a camera, I'm telling you,
you're number one and our.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
YouTube YouTube page. So I'm telling you right there.
Speaker 1 (18:21):
But I mean, I wasn't the one who dropped the
what what is that song even called?
Speaker 2 (18:26):
I forget?
Speaker 8 (18:28):
Are you talking about Pumped Up Kicks? Is that pumped
up Kicks? Pumped Up Kicks? Foster the People, Fluster the People,
great alternative band from fourteen years ago. We're giving you
a lot of ideas, Doug. Karaoke, go down to the Dells, bowling, paintballing.
I mean, you got the potentially unlist this is water rafting.
Speaker 5 (18:46):
You could have said over to the Dells too, Sam,
that would have worked. It's not going to go to Del's,
not going up to the Dell's.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
We're gonna go to the Dell's there. And that is
don't call it a throwback Thursday.
Speaker 6 (19:01):
Don't call it a throwback thirst Fox Sports Radio has
the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all
of our shows at Foxsports radio dot com.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
It's the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
And joining us for his weekly visit is the former
gentlemantioner of the Tampay Buccaneers, Mark Dominic, who has been
in NFL front offices for over twenty years. You named
the position, he's done it, and of course he's joined
us for a couple of years now on a weekly basis.
I want to ask you about Starry Schamari Stewart case.
(19:34):
He's a first round pick of the Bengals, and you
know there's always the Bengals carry with them this reputation
of being frugal. Yet when Carson Palmer was there, they
gave him the biggest contract ever and then he got
hurt the very next game when Chemo Van Olhoffen rolled
up on his knee. And now you know they've put
a bunch of money into their offense. What's going on
(19:56):
with the first round draft pick that's hold out?
Speaker 7 (20:00):
Yeah, Doug, it's a you know, it's a Bengals kind
of situation. What it looks like is in the contract
they're playing they're asking for language that if he does
something off the field that they can avoid the contract,
and so instead of it being fully guaranteed, if something
happens and off the field, there's an instant there's something
like that, and that's going to avoid the contract. A
lot of people would sit there and say, well, you know,
(20:21):
don't have something happen off the field. The problem is
it's precedent setting against first rounders. Most of them don't
have that language in their contract, and therefore they feel
very strong about their position of like, you've done this before,
now you're trying to change everything this year. And the
Bengals so far have dug their heels in and said,
you know, too bad. I mean they have You're right.
(20:42):
They have been known to be harder teams to negotiate with.
Certainly Joe Burrow got his money and Jamar Chase got
his money. To Higgins took a little bit of a
discount in my opinion to come back, but they have
spent a fortune. Uh, this will get resolved, but it's
just disappointing as a first round pick that he's not
being able to really practice the team at all. He's
been there, he leaves early, to avoid the fines and
(21:03):
anything like that. But it'll work out. But it's just
frustrating to see a battle over something that's pretty simple.
Speaker 1 (21:09):
The Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio, Mark
Dominic is our guest. Okay, so let's let's move to
Aaron Rodgers. He's now in Pittsburgh, like it's official. We've
been waiting. Give me your outlook for what you think
the Pittsburgh Steelers look like on the field.
Speaker 7 (21:29):
Yeah, you know what I am. I am fairly confident
in them. I do think left tackle is going to
be something that every Steeler fan is going to be
watching ken Roderick Jones be the left tackle, and you know,
Dan Moore had been holding that down and I thought
it did well. And obviously he goes to free a
team does very well for himself. They're going to go
with their first rounders at the tackles, and I think
(21:51):
that that's a little bit of a hold your breath.
So that's the one that's a little bit of concerning
for Aaron Rodgers. I think when you look at the team,
you know, bringing in a veteran like Robert Woods, obviously
d Metcalf in the trade there's still probably not where
they want to be overall talent wise, but there's still
I think a better overall team because I think Caleb
Johnson is going to be a nice addition to them
(22:13):
in the running back room. You know, with his size,
with his ability to catch the specialty catch the ball
of the backfield, he should be a good fit. This
is a this is a steel Steelers team that's going
to rely on their defense and be a good offense.
I think Aaron can do that. It's just getting TJ. Watt,
you know, happy as he's entered into his last year
of his deal and knowing what that number is going
to be for another team that's known to be a
(22:33):
little bit more difficult to negotiate with.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
I was I was wondering your thoughts on I was
watching Jacksonville.
Speaker 2 (22:44):
There's a lot of things with Jacksonville. Well, let's start
a quarterback.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
Liam Collen's job is to get Trevor Lawrence back on track.
How difficult a task is that?
Speaker 7 (22:54):
Well, I think that the mean answer is, I don't
know if Trevor Lawrence really ever has been on track.
I mean that's kind of the answer, because you know,
Trevor Lawrence has never really put up eye popping numbers
or you know those kind of numbers where you'd think
based off what he's getting paid. It's always been like, well,
we're buying what we're expecting, not what we've seen. And
that's a scary thought. Yeah, it's I mean, you know,
for Trevor it's another offensive but a coordinator, I think
(23:17):
this is like, this is the one that says what
quarterback are you going to be? You're going to be,
you know, good average quarterback? Are you going to start
to step up to the contract that you're getting paid.
I think it's going to be a little bit of
a wretch reach there for him. Again, you know, there's
certain things you look at. I don't love their offensive
line right now. You know, when you look at their tackles,
they were very inconsistent last year. You know, they signed
(23:39):
a couple of guys in free agency. It makes me nervous.
Speaker 6 (23:41):
Now.
Speaker 7 (23:41):
I do think Brian Thomas is unique and dynamic. I
think Brown's a really talented receiver, and you know they
may get Travis Hunter over there, but I just don't
I don't feel great about where they are offensive line.
I think the one guy I would look out for
is Benton Strange. I think at tight end he could
be that guy that has a really breakout season for
this offense.
Speaker 1 (24:02):
Travis Hunter working out with both sides of the football
does what does that do to his readiness for your one?
Speaker 2 (24:12):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (24:12):
You know today he was out on the football field
and he practiced on the offensive side of the ball. Now,
the one thing he hasn't done, Doug is you know
is he hasn't practiced offense and defense in the same practice, right,
Because that's that's the trick. It's you know, can you
run your body that much at this level playing against
twenty four, twenty seven, thirty one year old guys and
(24:34):
be able to not run yourself in the dessert? And
I sit there and say that for every Jacksonville fan
that said, hey, look we got our number one receiver,
we got our number one dB, you got your number
one dB, and you got you got a jack utility
knife of a receiver that you can only come in
with packages here or there. Because the goal is As
a former advanced scout when I was with the Bucks,
(24:56):
I would watch that and I would sit there and say,
We're going to run deep outs on him as he
plays corner, and then you know, if he wants to
come out there and run deep routes on us as
he plays receiver, he's going to get it exhausted and
worn out. And that's not a problem for me. So
I think you're going to see mainly defense with little
pockets of offense.
Speaker 1 (25:11):
I was wondering your opinion on how you would handle
the Shador Sanders thing. He's taking less reps now. But
as we get to where Flaco and you know all
the all the quarterbacks are there. You know Trubisky's there
as well as a Trubisky.
Speaker 7 (25:30):
No, it's Picket.
Speaker 1 (25:32):
Yes, it's Kenny Pickett, right, So you got Flaco, you
got Kenny Pickett, and then you got the two rookies.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
How do you navigate that if you're the head.
Speaker 7 (25:39):
Coach, Yeah, it's it's very difficult, And the only thing
you can do is really understand from a mental standpoint,
how are they doing these players, Because you just don't
have enough footballs to go around right now to be
able to get all the physical reps. So mentally, how
are they doing. How are they doing in the classroom,
how they're doing solo? What are they doing outside of
(26:01):
the classroom? What time are they showing up at the facility? Right,
That's been the big talk in Nashville here, you know,
where the quarterbacks showing up at five o'clock five thirty
every morning, grabbing guys, having to come together and working
out together, you know, And that's a huge deal when
you think about cam Ward and what impact he's trying
to have. So I think you've got to look at
those other things that you can do outside of the
(26:23):
football field to say, who's giving me the confidence to
deserve more reps? And at the same point, does Joe
Flacco need a lot of reps at this point in
his career. I mean, I don't think so, you know,
I think it's more of like you probably don't want
to rep them over reap them because you want to
keep them healthy. So it becomes, you know, the Kenny
Pickett versus the two draft picks, and I think it's amazing,
(26:44):
but I think all four guys could end up on
the roster, but one of them on the private club.
Speaker 1 (26:49):
I was I was reading some things about Robert Salah,
obviously very well respected as a defensive coordinator, and we've
had guys return to the place where they previously the
coach before, but you know, you're a head coach of
the Jets. Now you're back with the Niners. What's that
dynamic like in the building? When you've gone out for
(27:11):
a bigger job and you come back to the same
job you left having, it's hard to.
Speaker 7 (27:16):
Your I mean, it is always a little bit embarrassing
that you're still like at it and worked out very well,
and you think about it and there's nothing you can
do about it. And I mean we've seen a lot
of like you said, we've seen a lot of the
head coaches come back and be coordinators, maybe not at
the same club, but certainly around the NFL. They run
into their players. It's part of the business. You realize
that you had a shot, a dream opportunity, the roster
(27:39):
didn't come together the way you thought it would, and
and therefore you know you're back and a place is familiar.
You know, they don't play the Jets this year, which
is a convenient, possibly a convenient thing for them, just
so they don't have that kind of thing. But I
think it's it's water under the bridge. You know, there's
a lot there's gonna be a lot of coaches that
you know, get fired and go become coordinators, whether it's
a team that knows or not you in the NFL.
(28:01):
Once you make that step at the head coach, it's
just when am I get fired? Not if I'm going
to get fired?
Speaker 1 (28:06):
Yeah, yeah, well yeah, I mean that's generally the thought
and head coaching, Right, You're just coaching until you're fired,
not until you Very few guys get to change jobs
or do things at their own to their own volition. Uh,
you're coaching until you get fired. Right, that's the that's
the Angels expression. Last thing chiefs on paper on paper,
(28:30):
we keep saying the same thing, like, man, I don't
know how they do with this talent.
Speaker 2 (28:34):
I know how to do with this talent.
Speaker 1 (28:36):
What's what's the talent based look like on paper for
this year's team?
Speaker 7 (28:41):
Yeah, you know, it's been one of those teams that
every year have kind of until somebody takes them off
the summit. It's hard to kick them down the hill.
And I love the pick of Josh Simmons, and we'll
see when he's able to get out there and be
on the football field and contribute, you know, with his
knee and his help and everything like that. But it
sounds like it's going very well. Uh you know, we'll
see Rice and what happens with him, but I think
(29:03):
right now he's starting the season. Now, you've got to
feel pretty good about where they said. It's more of
you know, they were able to keep Nick Bolton there.
Obviously they've made some changes in the secondary a little
bit that that's going to be the one thing you're
going to want to watch is how's the cornerback room
play out. I think that's kind of the big spot
for the Kent City Chiefs. But I still think they're
(29:24):
certainly good enough to win the West. I just don't
think they're going to be in the Super Bowl. I
think that the other teams, the Ravens, where the Bills are.
I know that they've had these Achilles heels, but I
just feel like those teams, even the Bengals, could really
put something together this year. I think it's gonna be
a much harder to row for the Chiefs to haul.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
Awesome, awesome stuff.

Speaker 2 (30:48):
So tomorrow night we got another NBA game. I like
that right?
Speaker 1 (30:52):
One day in between we get a chance to kind
of digest it. Just some quick thoughts on last night.
If you didn't listen to the start of the show,
by the way, you can download the podcasts and check
out at the start of the show. It's the old
cliche role players play well at home. I thought, obviously
Ben matherin TJ McConnell outstanding last night. And you know,
(31:14):
I thought the the Pacers, you know that they did
a good job of committing to double teaming Oklahoma City
when when they felt like Shay got it going in
the post and then they played him straight up and
really helped off of lou Dort, helped off of Chet
Holmgren when he had the ball out out top and
(31:36):
made those guys beat him, and they didn't beat him.
Speaker 2 (31:40):
They didn't beat him.
Speaker 1 (31:42):
And this is a hard one as a coach, right
where the matchup says, Hey, they're helping off of lou Dort,
They're helping off of Chet. And one of the things
that Chet's been doing a good job of is when
they help he's been cutting for alley oops instead of
spacing for threes because he hasn't shot a hYP percentage
all year. Lou Dort's just up and down regardless what
percentage is. He's not seen as a shooter, but they
(32:02):
do leave him open. But this is there's some similarities
there to when Kevin Durant was on the Thunder and
they're up three games to one on the Warriors, where
Kevin Durant. Remember that team, Russell Westbrook, you didn't have
to guard what's the what's the big guy?
Speaker 2 (32:23):
Now? I think he's in Memphis.
Speaker 1 (32:25):
The the is the off season, Kiwi, I'm forgetting. Yeah,
Steven Adams was on that team.
Speaker 2 (32:34):
They had the guy who got hurt.
Speaker 1 (32:36):
With the knee, the defense, great defensive player. Was there
kind of three men on that team? Oh god, I'm
blanket on names of the other Thunder team in the past.
If you go back and look, yeah Robertson, Yeah, Robertson,
Andre Robertson. You know there was no space for KD.
The reason he left I believed to go to the
(32:56):
Warriors a couple of different reasons, but one was just
the idea of you can't help help off step Steph
gets a shot, help off Clay Claiy gets a shot.
Draymond's the one guy you can help up, but he's
always in the right position. A lot of times he's facilitating,
he's rolling to the hoop. You're playing against two and
three defenders every time. It's hard to do, hard to do.
(33:19):
And then obviously you know Haliburton making shots, Mattho and
making shots the energy in that building.
Speaker 5 (33:24):
Let's get to the press, the press, Yeah, Doug with
Kevin Durant on the trading block in Phoenix, as he's
now a member of the Suns. Shams reporting for ESPN
that a deal looks to be done sooner rather than
later for the forward, with teams motivated to get a
(33:45):
deal done prior to the NBA Draft, which is less
than two weeks away.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
Where do you think he ends up? I think I
wanted to be New York. I don't know if I
think it's New Ork. I just I wanted to be
New York, and I'll take it. There's a couple of things. One,
they need more scoring.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
Two.
Speaker 1 (34:07):
I do think I think Kevin RAN's an awesome player.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
I think we all do. Everybody's gonna have their opinion
of joining the Warriors.
Speaker 1 (34:16):
One other reason I think he enjoyed the Warriors was
he felt like he was the best player in the
game and the only way to do. It was to
match up against Lebron James in the finals. That they
did so, and they beat him twice. But I think
in order to get his rightful acclaim and his business
manager Rich Cleman, who wasn't involved during the trade deadline,
is involved now. And there's a podcast out there where
(34:40):
even Kad says like, maybe we should have done the Knicks.
I know you Climban wants them to do the next
I think he becomes a Nick.
Speaker 5 (34:47):
Interesting. I'll say the Rockets just for a suggestion. I
think they got enough young players that you could send
to Phoenix that would satisfy them as part of the deal.
But it is interesting because some thought that Giannis's deal
needed to be the domin and O before Durant, and
now that doesn't seem the case for whatever reason. All right,
an update from the US Open, Doug, We've had our
(35:09):
fourth ever albatross in US Open history. That was Patrick
Reid today on the par five to fourth hole. He
two on a par five for Patrick Reid. JJ spawn
has the lead, but he's got company atop of the leaderboard.
Sung j M is at four under par A. Couple
of notable names, Rory mcelroyd plus four at seventy after
a round of seventy four. Bryce in de Shamba is
(35:30):
three over par after seventy three Today, Brooks Koepka one
under par through twelve and how about Jordan Spieth, He
is in red numbers as well, currently won under through
eleven holes.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
Are are you still going with Scotty Scheffler to win it?
Speaker 5 (35:48):
Yes, Scheffler. Scheffler had a little bad break on the
tenth hole. I swear his ball hit the pin and
rolled back would have been within three feet. But he
will be a factor this weekend for sure, and by
the end of the day, I'll probably be around even Parr.
Speaker 1 (36:04):
Yep and I think I think after day two I'd
be surprised if right around even Parr wasn't in the league.
Speaker 5 (36:10):
Yeah, plus one right now for Scheffler through eleven holes.
If I if I didn't mention world number one and
the PGA champion of this year one other notes passed
along NFL y Steelers said coach Mike Tomlin said today
that he's optimistic a deal we'll get done with TJ. Watt,
who did not show up to the team's mandatory mini
camp because he wants a new contract.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
I can't see them not renegotiating. Whatever it'll happen. He's
gonna play for the Steelers. The question is for how
much and for how long. So feels like Steelers are
gonna go all in on this year and if it
comes up, if it comes up craps, then Tomlin's gone
with with with Aaron.
Speaker 5 (36:49):
Rodgers, they lowballed him and he saw the offer and
he was like, what you get out there and pressed.
Speaker 2 (37:00):
