Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Heres in
the Bonus with Doug Gottlieb.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
What up the Gottlieb Show, the Bonus Fox Sports Radio.
You know, there's something really interesting about golf, and JJ
Spawn ends up verting the last two holes and what

(00:31):
was probably most amazing isn't.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
And granted the rain I'm sure.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Really helped, but uh, in a day that started out
bogey bogey, bogey par on a par five, bogey bogey,
right bogeyed five of the first six holes, he ends
up finishing birdie par on a par three, birdie bogie,

(00:54):
par birdie and then chips in for the win.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
I think there's a bunch of layership.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
First is maya Copa because I said JJ Spawn leading
at the end of the first day of the of
the US Open. The guy who leads, the no name
who leads at the end of day one is like
the person you see at the start of the person
you see at the start of a horror movie. Right,
You're never gonna hear from them again. And then he

(01:26):
turns around he wins the damn tournament. Now it wasn't
without tumult, and it wasn't just smooth sailing. But it
is really interesting from a bunch of perspectives. Here's another one.
Here's another one. Look the shot to win. It was spectacular,
But am I wrong in saying that? In many ways
there's less pressure on that shot, although there's a lot

(01:48):
of pressure right when you're up there chipping and any
of us who you know, you're playing golf, those guys
have great control, so you're trying to locate it. You're
trying to, you know, give yourself, give yourself, you know,
a basically a gimme something uphill as well, and it's raining,
so you think it's gonna stop or slow down more quickly,

(02:11):
but it's you know, it's different what you're hitting out of.
So to hold it out is actually probably easier, if
you ask real golfers than maybe like a ten foot
double breaker like those you're breaking. But those are hard
and requires a little bit more metal. But we say
this thing about pressure and help people perform. Here's a

(02:31):
guy who woke up that day thinking I can win
the US Open, and then he proceeds to bogie five
of the first six holes, which leads you to believe
that he's a choker. He was tired, he wasn't relaxed enough,
and then all of a sudden he finishes in unbelievable fashion.
So you're like, no, this guy's a big stud. He
loves pressure. And the truth is probably somewhere in the middle,
but I would I would almost challenge people on this

(02:55):
as the thought, can you think of a more exciting
way to win a major? More improbable guy to win
a major? And while the course was ridiculously hard and
made slightly easier by the weather of the past two days,
I do think that it's almost like restrictor plate racing
in NASCAR.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
It keeps that field so tight that.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
You end up having some of these knockdown, drag them
out finishes at the US Open, maybe more so than
the PGA, the Open Championship of the Masters. I did
a great weekend of golf, and a guy who no
one myself especially thought could win this thing ends up
winning this thing in.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
A JJ spot.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Let's Get the Foxes and Now, I'd say every day
at this time in the Bonus podcast Play for your
portion for previous show, Fox Sports Radio, Fox Sports One.
Here's Colin Kwer talking about Caitlin Clark's return to the WNBA.

Speaker 4 (04:00):
It was a remarkable thing to watch, and she's got
a little flash to it that helps. She's totally unique
and totally transcendent. But I'm watching live on television, and
my takeaway is, oh, this is one of those like
once every two or three years, Like when Lebron made
that block in the finals, You're like, Oh, that's gonna
be an all time play. Or Michael Jordan switches hands.

(04:22):
I didn't see Kobe Live with eighty one, but if
you did, it probably felt like this. But I did
see Reggie Jackson in seventy seven, three pitchers, three pitches,
seventy seven against the Dodgers home runs. I know it's
the World Series. That is the greatest thirty eight seconds
and the greatest stretch what we watched this weekend in
WNBA history. The league is twenty five, twenty six, twenty

(04:45):
seven years old. However it is that's the greatest moment.
I don't care about championships. Diana Tarassi Sue Byrd, I
don't care.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
Look, it was amazing. It's amazing.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
It's fun to watch her, and she's grown into the
star that people thought she was last year because she's
refined her game, refiner shot and her confidences through the roof.
I know what he's saying is factually inaccurate to hardcore
WNBA fans, fan whatever, But reality is, most of us

(05:17):
just started paying attention. And here's what I'd like it into.
Colin reminds me of when Bob Knight the Great now deceased,
former Army Indiana and Texas Tech head coach retired and
he came to work for ESPN. He was working in
studio in that first season that he retired midseason and
his son Pat took over and Joe Alexander was playing
for West Virginia and I remember him at halftime saying,

(05:40):
Joe Alexander is the best player I've seen in college
basketball all season long. Now, knowing what I know, knew
afterwards was that coach Knight at that point in his career,
didn't really watch a lot of tape, didn't really watch
other guys play. He was actually telling the truth, like
he's like, yeah, he's the best guy I've seen all

(06:01):
season long. No, no, shit, you haven't watched everybody play
all season long, so of course he's the best. That's
what reminds you of calling. And I don't mean, I
don't mean it a shot at Colin. I mean this
is a shot at everybody. Like I haven't watched WNBA basketball,
So yeah, it's the best moment I've seen. But that's
because I don't watch. And I do think it speaks

(06:22):
to most of us, which is we never paid attention,
and now we do, and we're paying attention. She's she's
even better, if possible, than we ever thought possible. Here's
Dan Bayer, of course, our own Dan Byer on the
Desmond Baine trade.

Speaker 5 (06:40):
I can understand if you're having negotiations and you're the
Grizzlies and you're talking about what you want in return,
saying you guys aren't gonna have a top pick anyway.
You've got Powlo ban Caro is great, You've got this
young core. You probably will be in the playoffs for
the next five years at least with that group. And

(07:00):
now you add this piece. So if you're giving us value,
you're not giving us a lottery pick. You're not giving
us a top ten pick. You're giving us a pick
that's after twenty. But I also honestly think I don't
know if Memphis was ready for a deal like this.
But when you throw up that, hey, you moms will
ask and what hurts? They may say yes that when

(07:22):
Orlando said yes, they end up doing the deal. We
know that they're going to take a different look Memphis
is this season and moving forward now that Taylor Jenkins
is no longer there. But when you have an opportunity
to get that many picks and you have to give
up your third leading scorer, you know, like I mean,
Desmond Bain is a real nice player, but man, I mean,

(07:44):
this is this is what the you know, the Timberwolves
gave up for Rudy Gobert. I get it. But it's
a lot of a lot of those eggs in that basket.

Speaker 3 (07:54):
That's fair.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
It truly is fair, right where there's eggs in the basket.
I think desen Ban's unbelievably valuable. Unbelievably valuable, so it
feels like a lot. It seems like a lot, But
his versatility is toughness, it's competitives.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
Like I think he's absolutely worth it.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
And I also think it's more like Memphis is clearly
going to remake themselves. And when you trade away at
desen Bain, you no longer I think are in, Hey,
we're trying to win big Mode because he's a winning player.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
He's a guy that.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
He's not a glamour dude that's gonna sell you tickets
on bad teams like John Rant will sell tickets regardless,
because John Morant is as such a breathtaking athlete and
such a big name guy. But you win championships or
you win NBA playoff series with guys like desen Bane
as much or more so than John Morant, that makes

(08:51):
sense to you. Here's Dan Patrick talking about JJ spawn
when in the US Open.

Speaker 6 (08:56):
It felt like he was out and then on the
outside looking in. And then you realized everybody on the
outside looking in was also on the inside, because it
was like the field is coming back to everybody, and
the course was the star. And you were watching some
great golf, you were watching some shaky golf, some bad golf,

(09:18):
and it comes down to decision making. You had the
elements there with the rain, so you're making one of
the toughest courses in the world even tougher and you
add the pressure of Sunday. But JJ Spahn was wonderful
and he did what you want a champion to do.
The only golfer to finish under par, and the first
US Open winner to start his final round three consecutive

(09:41):
holes over par, and the fifth champion to bertie the
final two holes. That's what should stand out. That's what
people should remember. The drive on seventeen and ending up
with a birdie, and then the birdie putt on eighteen.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
Bertie putt birdie on eighteen was unbelievable. On eighteen was
just remarkable. But yeah, no, Dan's wright. He encapsulated it
perfectly that how you start off. I mean, so many
guys would start that poorly and just completely fade and oblivion.

Speaker 3 (10:14):
He didn't.

Speaker 2 (10:15):
And then what a birdie putt on eighteen. But you
go from and as we said, to start the start,
start the pod, you go from holy cow, you got
two hands completely wrapped around your throat. This guy's a
choker to what an unbelievable finishing birdie birdie with that
birdie putt on eighteen is like the stuff of legend.

(10:37):
And it is interesting on how all the rest of
it disappears. I couldn't have been tighter, couldn't have been worse,
and you're helped out by the weather right whether it
got the you know, those those greens were just ridiculously
difficult beforehand, but almost a tale of two very very
different days in one day, went round of a teen holes.

Speaker 3 (11:01):
That's what the Fox.

Speaker 7 (11:01):
Said, I'd say.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (11:14):
Okay, let's find out who are What's annoying Jason Stewart.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
And now it's your annoying.

Speaker 7 (11:26):
He Doug A couple baseball notes off the top. So
Raphael Devers has made this segment recently because he's been
a fucking circus drama mess for the Red Sox. But
he was involved in a giant trade yesterday. All the
baseball nerds were, uh were shocked by this because the

(11:47):
return for Raphael Devers was minimal compared to his talent.
He's known as a top fifteen hitter in the game.
He's a left handed power hitter. He just hit a
home run yesterday in the Red Sox sweep of the Yankees.
That should tell you all you need to know about
how much of a pain in the ass Rafael Devers
must be. I'm gonna say this again. He just had

(12:09):
a home run yesterday over the Monster to sweep the Yankees.
And he was traded at the beginning of spring training
after they had brought in Alex Bregman as a free agent.
Alex Bregman a gold Glove third baseman from the Astros.
Raphael Devers is not a gold Glover. I think he
ranks like in the bottom ten in fielding third basement.

(12:32):
He said he would he refuse to not play third base,
and he had a back and forth with the front office. Refused,
They got the agent involved, and then he succumbed and
was the DH. And then the farm hands started to
become like ready to get called up and they needed
a DH and their first baseman got injured, so of
course they went to Devers and they said, could you please,

(12:54):
since you played a corner position, could you play first base?
And he said, no, I'm not playing first base. So
they've had to just kind of shoehorn this lineup of
young hitters with Raphaelo Devers in the dh spot because
he refused to play first base. The Giants traded for him,
and their return is like Jordan Hicks, some pitcher and

(13:19):
something else. The return was pretty laughable. I haven't seen
one baseball rider analysts say that what the Red Sox
got in return was anything close to what they traded.
This was an addition by subtraction for a guy that
has a three hundred and thirty million dollar contract. Obviously
the owners like, we just get rid of this pain

(13:40):
in the ass. Devers this morning when asked if he
will be okay playing anything other than third base for
the Giants, I will play first base. I will play
any position that will help the team win. Unfucking reeled
this guy. The balls on this guy to hold the

(14:00):
Red Sox hostage and their fan base. He's annoying.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
Ah, he's definitely annoying. You know the interesting part about
it is, I think you and I talked about this.
This is the ex girlfriend, ex wife, ex whatever, ex
worker who just shut down, wouldn't do something.

Speaker 3 (14:16):
Then all of a sudden they're with they're with new dude,
and you.

Speaker 7 (14:20):
Know everything's on the table anything.

Speaker 3 (14:22):
Oh no, no, no question, no question.

Speaker 2 (14:26):
I mean even as as much as uh, you know,
your girlfriend or wife or whatever, she just not engaged
at all in what you're doing, whatever your interests are.
And then with the new guy, she's completely interested in
stuff that you know, not because she's interested in because
he's interested in.

Speaker 3 (14:44):
Which what you're supposed to do as a couple.

Speaker 2 (14:46):
Right, totally get Yeah, it's it's annoying and it's part
of why these gargantuan contracts were terrible in other sports.

Speaker 3 (14:54):
And I think this is the second one.

Speaker 2 (14:59):
Obviously the Angels had an old timer where the guy
didn't even play.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
But guess it's bad.

Speaker 2 (15:07):
And what the people ask all the time, what I've
learned in coaching in a year, And there's a million things,
But the number one thing is that you're better off
with slightly less talent and more buy in. It's the
old you know, character over talent. Character beats talent in

(15:28):
town has no character, right, But you're you're better off
with more team guys, more about us guys than about
me guys. And look, I even understand the first base thing.
Like first base is you need a whole off season.
Red Sox first baseman goes down for the season and
you need a lot of time.

Speaker 3 (15:48):
You're not a good fielder and you can't.

Speaker 2 (15:50):
People think we could hide somebody first base, Like no, no,
it's actually the opposite.

Speaker 3 (15:54):
It's a really difficult position.

Speaker 2 (15:56):
He could do it, and he's getting paid a lot
of money to do it, but didn't want to do
the The problem is that, like as you pointed out,
this is a trend with him and now he's with
the Giants. I'll do whatever it takes to win. So
it signifies to so many people when you're gonna sign
a guy to that level of contract, you got to
know about that guy more so than you do need

(16:17):
to know what his value is contract wise.

Speaker 7 (16:20):
What else are you familiar with the name Rachel Demitta?

Speaker 3 (16:26):
Vaguely.

Speaker 7 (16:27):
She's an influencer. You can go on x and see her.
She's a she fanciers herself as a sports reporter and
digital creator Rachel Demitta, and she is married to Andre Roberson.
So anyways, the thing that annoys me most coming off
the weekend are the people that still have doubts that
that Caitlin Clark is a unicorn and there's no comparison

(16:50):
to her and the WNBA should do nothing but embrace
her and promote her. There are still doubters, obviously, Rachel
Demitta being one of them. If so, the last two
weeks haven't offered you the context to no longer be
a doubter, then you're not going to be ever be changed.
You're like that one annoying sister of mine who, no

(17:14):
matter what conversation I have with her politically, shall never
change her stance. No matter what facts are presented, She'll
never change her stance. And I think there are still
people out there that In the wake of Caitlin Clark's return,
there were ratings released. Ratings for the WNBA in her
absence are down fifty percent, Ratings for the Fever games

(17:38):
since she was injured are down fifty three percent. That's
a significant drop, but Rachel Demitta has her own theory
on why that is.

Speaker 8 (17:49):
I hope you guys don't mind. But the news was
just announced that WNBA TV ratings are down more than
fifty percent since Kaitlin Clark's injury, and it was also
reported that the Indiana Fever television viewership is also down
over fifty three percent. A lot of people stopped watching
because they are boycotting the WNBA. They don't want to

(18:11):
give viewership to any other teams or any other players,
whether they like other players on the team or not,
because of how the media and the league itself has
handled Caitlin Clark and how they have treated her fans.

Speaker 7 (18:23):
Huh is that what you were doing? Were you boycotting Doug?
Is that what you didn't watch?

Speaker 4 (18:32):
What?

Speaker 3 (18:34):
I think? Did she played basketball at someone?

Speaker 2 (18:36):
Because I've seen her social media feed and it has
some stuff on it way, and I know she's married
to Andre Robertson, who's now I think playing overseas. But
I just her whole presentation and it just sounds so
fucking stupid.

Speaker 3 (18:50):
God. It's annoying.

Speaker 7 (18:51):
A massive controversy locally over the weekend that I have
a feeling is going to become a national topic because
I'm just starting to see the outcome. So the world
picked this up, so I want to kind of I
want to be the first national outlet to cover this.
It's going to be something. I don't know if you've
ever heard of the singer Neza Nzza. She's of Latina descent.

(19:15):
She was invited to sing the national anthem for the
Dodgers yesterday. And let's talk about what goes into that invitation.
You have one of the most historically iconic franchises in
the world asking you to perform the national anthem in
front of who knows who is in the crowd, executives, agents, influencers.

(19:39):
This is a major opportunity that the Dodgers are giving
you when they say, could you come on a Sunday
and sing the national anthem? So this is kind of
hard to hear, but it takes some context. Neza, I
guess I haven't been given the full story on this,
but I guess Nesa let it be known to her

(20:00):
people that she was going to sing the national anthem
in Spanish as a support for the people protesting Ice
for a support for immigrants, and a Dodger representative went
up to her before the game and said.

Speaker 9 (20:16):
This, if that was.

Speaker 7 (20:29):
So, that was Neza putting on her social media without
the Dodgers' permission. A member of the Dodgers going up
to her, I guess who had heard that she was
going to sing it in Spanish, said and said, we're
going to go ahead and do it in English today, okay.
Neza said yes. Then she proceeded to go onto the
field and sing the national anthem in Spanish. Okay, So

(20:53):
not only did she accept the Dodgers invite for this opportunity,
she defied their preference. I don't know, between you and
Sam and our listeners, have we ever heard a Spanish
rendition of the national anthem? It's almost never been done.
Neza went on social media afterwards and made it all

(21:14):
about herself.

Speaker 9 (21:16):
All right, bear with me, because I'm still I'm.

Speaker 10 (21:19):
Very shookn out and emotional names.

Speaker 9 (21:22):
Anyways, I just got home from singing the national anthem
in Spanish at the Dodgers game, and it is the
official Star Spangled banner in Spanish. You can google it,
so I'll just read it to you really quick. But
it was officially commissioned in nineteen forty five by the
US State Department as a part of President Franklin Roosevelt's
Good Neighbor policy to foster a better relationship with Latin America.

Speaker 11 (21:45):
Because of this, I didn't think I would be met
with any sort of like no, especially because we're in
LA and with everything happening, and I've sang the national
anthem many times in my life, but there was today, all.

Speaker 10 (22:00):
Days, I could not.

Speaker 12 (22:05):
I'm sorry, Yeah, I just could not believe when she
walked in and told me no, But I just felt
like I needed to do it.

Speaker 10 (22:15):
Botomy head did for anyone who's been following me for
a while, you know, everything I do.

Speaker 12 (22:22):
Is out of love, but out of love, good energy,
out of love.

Speaker 10 (22:28):
And I'm proud of myself for doing that today because
my parents are immigrants and they've been citizens like my
whole life at this point. They got documented really early.
But I just can't imagine that being ripped away from me,

(22:53):
even at this age, like let alone, like a little
little kid, like what are we doing anyways?

Speaker 12 (23:02):
Sorry, this is a whole different side of me that
y'all never see.

Speaker 10 (23:05):
But thank you for all the sweet messages. I love
you guys so much.

Speaker 12 (23:09):
Safe to say, I'm never allowed in that You'm ever again,
but I love you guys so much.

Speaker 10 (23:16):
I love you guys.

Speaker 7 (23:17):
So the last thing she said is I'll never be
invited back again. The Dodgers have only responded to that part. Okay,
Dodgers have been very hush hush on this, and I'm
going to tell you what, but the Dodgers said, we
have not banned this woman. We have not told her
she's not welcome back. Okay, Neza. I've never heard of you,
but you went out of your way to put the Dodgers'

(23:39):
business on your social media. There was a column by
Dylan Hernandez on Friday taking the Dodgers' front office and
ownership to task for not saying a single word about
the protests downtown. The Dodgers have made an intentional decision.
They don't have to weigh in on politics. They know

(24:00):
how polarizing it is that you could say, Oh, a
bunch of their fans are migrants, Okay, cool, A bunch
of those migrants aren't able to afford. They're not. They're
not ticket they're not they're not purchasing fans. And the
Dodgers at this moment in time are not going to
weigh in on a polarizing political position that's going to

(24:21):
polarize half of their fan base, particularly the fan base
that could afford to pay the tickets and to pay
for their Dodgers' experience. They made an intentional decision to
not weigh in on this. Dylan Hernandez took exception to that.
He's got a right to do so, but the Dodgers
don't have to do that. Five years ago, in the
wake of the George Floyd thing, we saw all these

(24:42):
teams and corporations taking political stances and it was so unusual.
It just goes back to the Michael Jordan thing. Republicans
by Nikes two. It's it's corporations steer clear of the
shit because they don't have to weigh in. But she
has drawn the Dodgers in by that woman telling her
not to sing it in Spanish and by saying that

(25:04):
the Dodgers will probably not welcome me back. She's trying
to inflame this thing. She's almost forcing the Dodgers to
comment on something they have gone out of their way
not to comment on. I think that's unfair. I think
she put them in a shitty position. Fans should be
pissed off at her for that. I don't care what
your political views are on ice or any of that stuff.

(25:24):
It's what this bitch chose to do yesterday by singing
the national anthem and Spanish to defy the team that
gave her the opportunity to sing.

Speaker 3 (25:34):
Correct.

Speaker 2 (25:36):
Correct, you know, correct, And again it's the part that
I think you nailed is and it's really important for
others to understand you're allowed to.

Speaker 3 (25:48):
She's allowed.

Speaker 2 (25:49):
Anybody's allowed to think, well, you know, Franklin Delano Roosevelt
approve this singing in the national anthem? Like fine, none
of that matters. The only thing that matters was the
people that invited her to sing it said, specifically singing
in English.

Speaker 3 (26:07):
That's it.

Speaker 2 (26:09):
And if you didn't want to do it, then don't
go seeing the national anthem. You know, it's the It
doesn't mean that the Dodger's decision was perfect or even
was right. That's not what it's about. It's about this
is what you were asked to do and you didn't
do it.

Speaker 3 (26:28):
Period. Stop.

Speaker 2 (26:30):
I don't have to go any further. It just this
is the the entitlement in your and just the lack
of understanding, especially that a younger generation has. You know,
this is one of anybody's issues with gen Z, Like, look,
no one said you're not allowed to protest, but there

(26:51):
are certain ways in which you're not allowed to protest,
and this is one of them because it's this is
not a protest zone. This was a an honor that
you received that you chose to do your own thing
with and for that, you're night.

Speaker 1 (27:07):
Why are we doing this because we can.

Speaker 7 (27:17):
I don't know if you're familiar with a camera rooo Usman. Now,
it may have been one of the most action packed,
like filled sports weekends we've ever had in June. Like,
there's so much to talk about today, and I guess
if it was a light news weekend, maybe we would
have talked about Camarroo Usman. He's a UFC fighter, and

(27:40):
he's a shit talker and we love him. And he
offered up the sound by of the weekend. He just
got done kicking some guy's ass in the octagon. He
wanted to praise his opponent, and then he had a
message for his haters. I so love and respect to
all of these guys because I know what it takes to.

Speaker 3 (27:56):

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
