Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Boom, What up? Doug
godlives show Fox Sports Radio every day at this time
we join you live from the City of Angels. So
much to get to, so much to get to today.
Earlier today on Fox Sports Radio. Earlier today on the
(00:27):
Fox Sports Radio Adam Silver joined Colin Calherd, and I
want to play for you a couple of things, he said.
But I do think there's there's this um problem we
have as fans. There's the problem we have as consumers.
There's this issue we have in terms of our evaluation.
We have a tendency to grade people based upon if
(00:50):
we like them, not if they're doing a really good job,
and not every job. Do you have to be respected
more than like? And the are people that can be
both respected and liked. But if I had to be
if I had to pick between one or the other,
I would pick respected. I can make the case and
(01:12):
I will that Roger Goodell, in his actions and in
the inaction in many ways of Adam Silver on several
different issues, has caused Adam Silver to be liked, Roger
(01:34):
Goodell to be respected, and Roger Goodell to be a
far superior commissioner. Now that that may burn your ears
because you have been trained, based upon the vitriol from players,
from fans and from my media brethren, that Roger Goodell
is in fact the devil incarnate. But the fact is
(01:55):
that um in spite of, in spe right of several
missteps he has been alleged to have made, the NFL
could not be healthier. Whereas the NBA, while incredibly healthy
in terms of financial success in their new collective Barden
(02:17):
agreement and TV deals, it is teetering on completely and
utterly unwatchable up until the finals. It's a bait and switch.
It's a fog machine that takes away from everything else
that's going on. Let me start with this. Roger Dale
(02:38):
was on with Roger Adam Silver was on with Colin Cowherd.
He was asked about whether or not Kevin Durant going
from the Golden State going from the Oaklahoma City Thunder
to the Golden State Warriors, if that was bad for
the league. Take a listen to his answer. The way
the system was designed was not for Golden States to
(02:59):
have the kind of capital whim they did, but they did,
and he was allowed to make that decision. Golden State
was allowed to recruit him. But as he said the
other day, he only impacted the fortunes of one team.
He's not responsible for the fortunes of the seven other
teams in the league. No, he's not. You are see that.
That's the whole thing. Adam Silver is incredibly well liked
(03:23):
by the players. He's defending the player, and in many ways,
I will defend the player in Kevin Durant in his decision.
He's allowed to make this based upon the collective part agreement,
based upon his desire to go to a different city,
to a different team, maybe with different teammates that he
would enjoy playing with more. But while Kevin Durant could say, hey, man,
(03:44):
it only affected one of their team, that's bull. It
didn't affect the team. It destroyed the Thunder. The Thunder
can no longer be competitive atop the Western Conference. Additionally,
it took a team that won seventy three games and
and Darren had nothing to do with that. And there
was some luck to it in that they got Steph
(04:05):
Curry to sign an extension before Steph Curry got healthy
enough to be the two time m v P he became.
But while it only destroyed the Oklahoma City thunder the
balance of power so greatly shifted that if you think
(04:26):
it only affected Oklahoma City, you're simply not paying attention.
Like the Golden State Warriors didn't have their head coach
Andrea Goodala has a bit of a gympi knee. Clay
Thompson hasn't even been playing great, and they were, and
they were twelve and oh, twelve and oh in the postseason.
(04:52):
There weren't competitive games, with the exception of Game one
in the San Antonio Series. They just weren't where they
helped out by Andrews shot or They ended up with
the number one seed, the number one seed in the West,
the best record in the NBA. And this is when
they didn't have Kevin Durant the last month or so
of the season. Steph Curry did not have a great year.
(05:17):
They still ended up with sixty seven wins on a
year in which they were Okay, that's how thoroughly and
completely dominant they truly were. Were the Clippers gonna beat him?
We saw they did to Portland. Who's the competitors in
the West. Who is the team that's close. There isn't one.
(05:39):
There isn't one. So while while Roger Goodell gets the
rap of being the bad guy. Meanwhile, Roger Goodell has
smartly moved two teams into the l A market, which
generates hundreds upon hundreds of millions of dollars, gives them
a new Super Bowl home and a new home for
the NFL network. Then he gets he generates seven fifty
(06:00):
more dollars for NFL owners and for the rest of
the league by moving the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas,
a new and untapped gem of a market after Oakland
for twenty years refused to build a new stadium, and
really the market for Oakland can't really support a new
stadium or a new team. He moved two teams into
l A, he's got a new cb A, he's got
(06:24):
new TV deals. They're printing money, They're play more games overseas,
which generates money from uh from the global economy, something
they had not previously done. Like, he's doing his job,
whether you like him or you don't like him. Meanwhile,
the NBA has major problems on their hands, and you're
not gonna pay attention to it over the next two
(06:45):
weeks because you like me. We're totally in on Oklahoma,
Susan on Cleveland versus Golden State. But Lebron's not going
anywhere for a while. Kyrie Irving's not going anywhere because uh,
Kevin Love is not going anywhere. Golden State Warriors aren't
go anywhere. These are the two pre eminent teams. Barring
a rash of injuries to the elite players on these teams,
(07:07):
the likelihood is they'll be back in the finals next year.
You compound it with the idea that you have more
games in the regular season on TV than you've ever
had previously on national TV, and you've got guys taking
more games off than they've taken off before, and like, look,
he can defend it, and he can take the player's side.
(07:31):
He takes the player's side. Like, hey, look man, last
owner was an owner's last commissioner was an owner's commissioner.
I'm a player's commissioner. But all the money that they're spending,
all the money that they're making, is off of these
new TV deals from Turner and ESPN. And you mean
to tell me that that he hasn't fielded phone calls
from both. Hey, Adam, we paid you all this money
(07:56):
and you don't you have a non competitive league. We've
non competitive league. The reason that NBA players and that
the NBA TV package is valuable is not just the finals,
it's volume of games. Like look, I worked at ESPN.
The reason that college basketball was what ESPN was built
(08:19):
around wasn't because college basketball was a great ratings cash cow.
It's because it provides a great volume of games, live
sporting events. That's what the NBA was. But here's the problem.
There was combined, combined, combined, twenty five playoff games between
the two teams in the finals. These are non competitive playoffs.
(08:45):
Compound that with non competitive, unwatchable regular season games because
either two teams just have better players or the really
good players aren't playing, and you have major problems, to
which Adam Silver hasn't stepped up and go, you know what,
he's Kevin Durant can switch teams within the collect Environment agreement.
He didn't do anything illegal, and we want our players
(09:08):
to have freedom. On the other hand, this did really
damage the ability for the fourteen other teams in the
West to compete and made the regular season kind of Obsoletely,
Roger Goodell continues to try to find ways to make
his league more competitive, more compelling, and their ratings were
(09:31):
down this year, mostly because of the election. But everything
that he's done has either been with both sides in
mind or frankly, the best interest of the sport at mind,
whereas Adam Silver has done done it based upon what
people like the most. And being commissioner of a league
(09:52):
is not a popularity contest, especially with your employees. Like
part of the deal is you've gotta make really really
hard decisions, really our decisions. You gotta draw a line
in the sand. You gotta say some things that people
aren't gonna like, but you do so because you know
the health of your business or the health of the
(10:12):
thirty franchises is at stake. And I like Adam Silver.
I like him a lot. He seems like a hell
of a fella. He seems like a lot better guy
to have a beer with than his predecessor, no doubt.
But there were twenty five combined games between two teams
(10:33):
playing three series three seven game series a piece. You
do the math the non competitive. So to sit there
and say, you know, Kevin Wrant, it only affected one
other team, Like, that's a lie either, that's a liar,
that's being obtuse to reality. And that's what Adam Silver
has coned you all on the idea that he can
(10:55):
defend players to no end. Meanwhile, it's hurting the product,
it's hurting the league. And if he hasn't heard from
Turner and Disney and all of the owners about it soon,
Will Goodell is a better commissioner than Adam Silver. You
just like Adam Silver more, but that's not the prerequisite
for being a great commissioner. All Right, we'll get to
(11:20):
said Cibolos. He's gonna join us. It's been our NBA
analysts to get his thoughts as we are a day
away from the NBA Finals. Who has more to lose
with a loss, not necessarily in Game one, but in
in the series. And how much does he think Mike
Brown being the head coach of the Warriors affects the
(11:42):
Warriors in comparison to Steve Kerr well, as said Sobolos,
he joins us next in the Doug Gottlip Show, Fox
Sports Radio, broadcasting live from the studios of Fox Sports Radio.
Here's Doug Godlieb, which true car you can find out
what other people in your area paid for the same
car you're looking for and on average save over three
thousand off m s r P. Whether you're looking for
(12:04):
a new or use car, visit True Car to enjoy
more confident car buying experience. Doug Gotlieve show Fox Sports Radio.
Let's welcome in our man, said Saballos, dunk champion NBA VET.
He's helped us breakdown the NBA playoffs, which frankly have
been terrible, terrible because you know, you have twenty five
combined games with six combined series, seven game series. Like,
(12:27):
that's non competitive, to which I pointed out said moments ago,
I like, look, I like Adam Silver a great deal,
but this whole, uh you know mantra that well, you know,
Kevin rent leaving Oklahoma City only affected Oklahoma City, Like that,
that's not true. And I'm like, I'm not saying that
what Kevin Durant did was wrong, but the idea that
it didn't greatly affect the watchability or now unwatchability of
(12:51):
this league is kind of lying to ourselves. What are
your thoughts on how much it affected the competitive balance,
specifically in the West. Well, you're always going to have
teams that have a lot of power and and a
lot a lot of star power, so to speak. But
when you add somebody as dynamic as Kevin Durant, it
(13:11):
makes a really good shift on on how it is played.
But you gotta remember even last year in the reculste
didn't even know Kevin. What hurts a little portion at
the beginning of the season, go to State Warriors had
a better record, So it's been more opportunities for them
to to show how much, you know, they can move
the ball around and exercise the right without a big
guy like I think Adam really understands that, you know, this,
(13:35):
this is the way the league is. You know, before
players don't have that much of a choice to maybe
pick and choose where they wanted to go. Before because
of salary, has because of demands, and now with the
league being opened up, nobody and and at my point
has always been nobody really points to Biger at you know,
uh team like okay, see if they would have traded
(13:55):
him away or you know, or they never point the
singer a Golden State for going to get another i
uh to add to their punch. And you know, it's
always pointing at the You know, Kevin made the decision,
so he was there, but you know it's you know,
he may have been forcing the other other ways and
maybe okay, see wasn't trying to make him a focal point.
They may have been moving over to Westbrook being a
(14:17):
leader of their team, and that's what he didn't want.
Uh And and and also Golden State is looking, hey, we
need somebody to stop Lebron or equalize Lebron out. We
need another hero, and they wouldn't got Kevin Durant. So
Adam I think it is taking the high road on
both sides. He understands, Um, this league has got huge
contracts and obligations to those uh you know, huge contracts,
(14:41):
and it's it's not really the players league as we
think it is, but it's also, uh we negotiate. I
think Adam negotiates most of the deals knowing that, hey,
is Kevin gonna be involved as Lebron, gonna be involved
as Steaths, gonna be involved in these commercials and these
ads and promoting our product. And I think that's why
he's told war between you know, making a decision on
(15:02):
should these things go this way or or should guys
be resting it? Now? You make a listen, you make
a how's a great point that you made that. It's like,
we make this this idea in mind that it's a
players league, and it's really not right. Like the you
have the rights holders with Turner and ESPN, and you
have the owners that have laid out all of this money,
(15:22):
and yet he's been very much he's been very much
a player's commissioner. And that's kind of my point is
like that's actually not really his job. His job is
not to be liked. His job is to be respected
and do what's better for the league. And I don't
know if he could have stepped in here, but but
the the thing is like, look, the West was non competitive.
They won all twelve games. Did they get a little
lucky because of health? Like, yeah, but they won all
(15:43):
twelve games without Steve Kerr. They completely dominated class. And
then you go back to the regular season, which now
nobody cares about. Guys are taking games off, and between
the volume of playoff games and the volume of competitive
regular season games, that's why Turner and ESPN paid out
all this money. And at some point when your rights
(16:05):
holders gonna go like, hey, like the championship is great,
but that's not how we keep the lights on in
our building. That's not how you feel fulfill uh your
end of the bargain, like this is a bad deal
for your rights holders, and that that does not bode
well for the future of his league. Well, the prime
words you said there was lucky. You gotta think about
it going twelve. Oh, it's not one. It's not easy,
(16:26):
but it involved a lot of luck. I mean, I've
always said there was only four teams this year that
really wanted to win a championship. That was Golden State,
San Antonio, Uh, Cleveland, and the Clippers that really made
moves to try to win a championship. Obviously, Clippers didn't
get a chance to get a hold of Golden State,
and you go to San Antonio. We'll go with San Antonio.
They lose two of their best players. Uh, so you know,
(16:49):
there's a lot of luck to got involved in that.
So obviously, the when we when Adams sits down and
puts this schedule together and he knows that this team
is gonna be dominant, he doesn't expect those things to
happen Clippers. He expected Clippers and gold State to go battle,
but it didn't just didn't happen. He expected, uh, quite
to be healthy. It just didn't happen. I mean, they
had them against the Ropes game once, so you know,
(17:10):
we were complaining about these guys going twelve and oh,
but it took a lot of luck to be involved
in that twelve and over run. And it's not even there.
I think this is not even their best team that
they put on the court in the last three years.
It's just the most dominant and far as name wise,
but as far as team concept, ball movement and everybody
being healthy, I think I don't think there's a far
fetch from their best team that they have. And with
(17:32):
the TV contracts, I know people are disappointed there's not
more games because they're just so quick, a lot of sweeps,
a lot of sweeps. But people are still watching, they're
still dooling in. And the numbers, the record numbers of
viewers is up. That's why the contracts are bigger. The
record numbers of viewers are up. That's why the endorsements.
Everybody wants to put piece on it because they're up.
(17:53):
And then and the reason they are up because of
the drama, because Kevin Less, because Lebron added some more pieces,
because Lebron one last year and Steph didn't and step
one the year before that. That's all. This is all drama.
This is stuff that we're talking about now on the
air because of the great product that's been put out there.
As uh you mentioned Steph Curry. Really interesting on how
(18:13):
we view Steph Curry nationally now. He was he was
the m v P back to back years. Last year
is the unanimous m v P. And I don't know
if he wasn't healthy. I mean, you know, he was
supposing he got hurt and he came back into Portland's
game forty so and then all of a sudden when
he doesn't play well, oh, he must not be healthy.
So I don't know if he wasn't healthy or if
they simply wore him down by making him guard the
ball continuously. But whatever happened, he didn't have a good finals.
(18:37):
He just didn't and and he had a little bit
of down year up until when Kevin Durant was out.
He's been spectacular in the playoffs, but it feels like
he's he's a secondary story and maybe even a tertiary
story to Lebron one k D two. And then you
get into Steph Curry. How important do you think a
great performance of solid performance in these finals is to
(19:00):
Steph Curry in terms of his legacy and where he's
viewed after coming in the finals last year he was
the back to back m V pick. I don't I
don't think that he Um, whether he has a good
series or not, I don't think he's going to be
tarnished anyway. As far as his legacy, I don't even
think it's going to exceed its legacy. I think, Um,
you know that he's not a team by himself. He's
(19:24):
never been that type of player. You know, in the
first year with late won it all he was you know,
he didn't he I thought he had a below average
but below steps average finals. You know this one reason
he didn't win it pet a matter of fact, he
might have been third on the ballot, but behind Adala,
Lebron James, and then he may have been there. Um,
he just that just not that type of player. I mean,
(19:45):
he's he's a person that that you know, has the
ability to score. He's the same size as those Americans
in the world. So that's what it really loved him. Too.
Small guys really sell a lot. Uh. But it's some
things about the things about Steff that just does that
do not have the predicated or the persona of him
leading a team? You know, so if you put him
(20:07):
on the worst team in the NBA, do they succeed? No,
because he we we've tried that before when he's been
the only guy on Golden State before Clay, before Draymond Green,
and he hasn't led them to a playoff appearance. Uh,
Lebron James has done that, Kevin Durant has done that
when he hasn't had anybody and put them in the
position there. So I think that's why this doesn't tarnish
(20:28):
his legacy or boost is up anywhere because he's not
you know, he's not spoken in the category Lebron and
Michael Jordan, Matthew Johnson, Larry but he's not in that
category because he can't do it all by himself. He
needs a pretty good cast to do. So that's the
voice of Cedric Sabalos from a dunk champion over a
decade long bucket getter in the association. All right, let's up,
(20:53):
let's let's get to game one. Uh. Most interesting thing
that you as a guy who watches NBA basketball and
a complete the different level than the than the civilian does.
What's the one thing you're looking forward to say? You know,
I think you know everybody's predicting going to state to
run through this. I'm even saying that sweet and I said,
(21:14):
you know, it's gonna be hard to do. It's just
I just think the defense that Cleveland brings to the table,
the physicality of it. Um, they haven't had a lot
of basketball because of the sweeps that both of these
teams have been doing. I think they're going to draw
this thing out. I mean it's it's it's I see
six or seven games, the possibility if it goes six,
(21:35):
I see Golden State winning. If it goes seven, I
see you know, Cleveland winning again in game seven. I
just think the physicality, it depends on the physicality of
the first game, on where where the referees are going
to set the margin. I think they're looking for a
long series because all the sponsors are going, hey, we're
not getting a lot of basketball. We need some more
(21:55):
commercials and all that. So, um, let's see you know
who draws first, Luod and and not the first quarter.
I'm talking to the second quarters where we figure out
what everybody's doing, who's on fire, who's not uh you
when we make some sort of adjustments to try to
get some a little motivation going into the second half.
So I want to see the defensive presidence of Cleveland,
(22:17):
um and how how they put they put pressure on
Steph Curry, Kevin Durant and the rest of the guys.
I don't feel that this is the best bench that
Golden State has put together. So we'll see how that
works out too as well. But um, I wanted to
go six or seven and and and if it goes six,
I see Golden State winning the championship. Would would be
(22:37):
great for basketball and sports because you know, we get
another fourth year these two maybe back in the finals
again and you know, trying to break you know, obviously
this is breaking the tie from one of them and
then we see it we can tie a thing up
or you know, it's it's great drama and I love it.
I'm with you, Cedric Sabalos. He'll be joining us hopefully
throughout the finals. In the meantime, falm on Twitter at
said Sabalas said, thanks so much, enjoy the games. We'll
(23:00):
talk very soon. All right. That's Centric Sabolos joining us

(24:03):
You know, it's like no, it's like no, no guy
believes when they're when they just met a girl. And
I was the best ever? Right, just come on man? Ever,
like alright, listen great, I'm like it makes my ego healthy.
But just it was really good? Is enough for me? Yes? Yes,
(24:26):
right one date into it. I don't know, Man, she's different,
she's different. Yeah, she's different because you've just met her. Ah,
you do kind of knowing, you know, But I'm with you.
But how many times can she be different than the
other girls that they've dated in the past? Different? Exactly exactly?
I don't know, though, I do. I need to feel
like there's a lot of there's a lot of sameness,
(24:46):
you know, depending on region of the country, there's girls
that talk the same, and there's the break that you
do want somebody that break through. I just I don't
like the when people are just over the top about
stuff like, oh, that was the best sal I have
ever had? Like, how are you? I'm forty three, Like
I'm guessing you've had some pretty good salads. Oh that
(25:10):
movie was amazing, that's so good. Every every new movie
they see is their new favorite movie good, better than
Shawshank Redemption Okay, okay, maybe not, maybe better than usual
suspects of different genre, you know, everything you get done
(25:31):
binge watching, like oh, Breaking Bad best series ever? Really?
Is it? Right? Billion special on TV? I could I
could say that, But I don't like when people just
they say ridiculous things that that there's a there's a
reality to them which makes no set which which goes
(25:52):
contrary to what they're trying to tell us. Case in point,
Derek Carr. So, Derek Carr's headed into the final season
his rookie contract. He could soon soon sign. Wow, that's
really hard to say that he could soon sign. Take
two on that real quick. Derek Carr's head again to
the final season of his rookie contract. He could soon
(26:15):
sign a huge contract extension. Wow, that's really hard. He's
a franchise quarter right, Yes, we'll roll with that. Okay, good,
He's a franchise quarterback. And uh to this point. Reggie
mackenzie indicated earlier this season that extensions could be in
the offing for both Car and Khalil mack but more recently,
(26:38):
Car has expressed frustration with the slow paced of his
extension talks. So he said, quote if Derek, if Derek
Carr said that, if he did, if there was an
extension reached by training camp, which they've drawn us a
line in the sand as a deadline. Deadlines bring eels,
(27:00):
he quote won't even pick up my phone, won't even
pick up his phone. So I don't know how much
Derek Carr wants. It's probably a lot of money. Plus,
remember Derek Carr in addition to being in the new CBA,
so you don't make a ton of money. He was
actually a second round draft pick. I get all the
lucky things to have happened. Houston had two shots, two
(27:25):
shots at Derek Carr, and they didn't take him because
David Carr didn't work out in Houston, right, Think about
all the things that would have changed about the NFL
had Derek Carr been in Houston. I don't know if
he would have been as good as he is in Oakland,
but I'm guessing with a quarter a quarterback guru's head coach,
and with a supreme amount of talent and great defense,
(27:46):
like pretty good chance he'd be pretty good. Derek Carr
made one point one million dollars last year, or assume
that that's that's just so. He made like a million
dollars last year at one point one next year. And
car of course, look when he was before he got hurt.
The Raiders at least offensively posed a great threat on
(28:08):
some levels to New England Patriots. He gets hurt and
the Patriots had no real competition in the playoffs in
the a f C. So Derek Carr, who did not
play every game of the season through for thirty thirty
seven yards he had was it twenty eight touchdowns and
(28:29):
six interceptions. Like the Raiders have been searching for a
franchise quarterback since rich Gannon hurt his arm, Ridge Cannon
was the m v P the year they went to
the Super Bowl, hadn't been the playoffs since they finally
get one. He's wildly underpaid because he was the what
was it, the thirty six pick in the draft. He's
in his fourth year and he's like, look, I want
(28:50):
to get paid, and he will this whole idea that
I'm gonna draw a deadline. It's gonna be training camp,
and you know what, I'm turning off my phone. What
do you think the chances are Derek Carr actually turns
off his phone, and you'll get stories from people like
I went on vacation for two weeks. I turned off
my phone. It was exhilarating, it was incredible. I didn't
(29:14):
feel tied down to anything. I wasn't constantly looking at
Twitter or Facebook or texting friends. I was just present.
I was just being like, that's great. When you're in Hawaii,
that's great. When you're in Fiji, that's unbelievable. When you're
in Cabo, right, I get's an amazing experience. Of course,
(29:35):
you come back, you turn on your phone, and you
get out, You're like, oh my god, I have three
thousand unread emails. Tiger Woods did what right? I mean,
it's just and the reality of it is Derek Carson dad,
he's a husband, he's in his mid twenties, twenty six
years old. He's not shutting off his phone. Additionally, even
(29:58):
if it was a metaphorical hey, I'm not listening to
any contract thing because I got this deadline. If they
come close to his number, he's gonna pick up his phone.
He's gonna see Reggie mackenzie every day at work. And
if Reggie Mackenzie pulls him out the practice field, says hey, Derek, listen,
you wanted a hundred million. We were at eighty million,
and you know ninety millions about right, isn't it if
(30:18):
we got close to your guaranteed number, do you mean
to tell me? He's like, no, I'm sorry. I turned
off my phone. I can't have this conversation. I just
don't like. I just don't like when you're so over
the top and lying about it. There's a smart way
for Derek car to handle this. I will be the
spokesperson for Derek Carr right music, You're ready, If i'm
(30:39):
If I'm Derek Carr and or Derek Carr's agent, text me,
what should he say? Very very simple. I've been here
for four years. We've built something fantastic. I've been part
of the process, and I think, I don't think, I know.
I want to be the guy to lead us into
the future. And I think whatever the going rate for
that is, it's a reasonable sum of money. It's a
(31:01):
lot of money. But because of the position I play,
because of the change within this organization, the way in
which I've helped lead us out from the darkness of
fifteen years not making the playoffs. At some point we
all want to be compensated at an appropriate level based
upon our performance and our job title, and so I'd
like that to happen. It will ultimately happen. We'll get
(31:21):
a deal done. I'm not leaving the Raiders. They don't
want me to go, and I don't want to leave.
I'd be really disappointed if we couldn't get this done
before the trade, before a trading camp, because I don't
want it to drag in the season. I just want
to play football, get back to the playoffs, be healthy
this time, and win a couple of playoff games. But
if it doesn't get done, like my cell phone is
always on Reggie's right down the hall, we can very
(31:44):
easily get this done. I'm a reasonable person. That's a
reasonable thing. You say that, what's the laws in it?
He didn't give up anything negotiations, He didn't create any
sort of gray timeline. But instead it gets away with
lying to us. I'm turning off my phone. The chances
(32:05):
that a twenty six year old father of two turns
off his cell phone in the middle of a football
season stop it. And oh yeah, by the way, your
boss is renegotiating your deal works down the hall. Doesn't
even matter which NFL player is a literal psychopath. You
(32:27):
will find out up coming next This is the Doug
Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. With True Card, you
can find out what other people in your area paid
for the same car you're looking for new or used?
Is it true? Car to enjoy a more confident car
buying experience? Doug Godlive Show, Fox Sports Radio. Every day
(32:51):
we try and um, we let Dan Buyer reach in
find a game in a place that we call my sack.
Let's reach into Godly's sack. All right, Dan Buyer, what's
in the second. Let's see what you got on this
hump day we have got Although a lot of people
(33:12):
it's kind of after the day is midwek because the
four day week. But yeah, guess who how about that? Doug,
let's play some gutsu. Okay, how about this? Guests who
want to sign Young Award and thought the Bryce Harper
Hunter Strickland fight was awesome? Oh wait, wait I heard
this one? Um was a masson pump gardener? Oh? Man?
(33:35):
Who want to say last year's saying wasn't Clayton Kershaw? No? No,
I wasn't Kerrshaw? Uh? Oh I know Jake Arietta, Yes
he did as he said it on six seventies the
score in Chicago. Think anybody's right or wrong? I think
I thought it was awesome. You know, every once in
a while it's repressing to see uh two teams emotionally
(34:00):
like chars getting after it. And when when something like
that happens, versus continuing to chirp and talk about it,
Why don't you go out there and see somebody. I
couldn't agree more. I could agree more. Like like again,
like you guys, they don't like each other. It's it's okay,
it's okay. Baseball's policed itself fine for a hundred years.
We don't need to we don't need to get involved.
(34:21):
And you know, they reduced Bryce Harper's suspension of four
to three earlier today, Hunter Strickland suspended what five or
six games? Like that? Six games, all right, So that
keeps him out of a couple whatever. You know, baseball
feels like it has to do something. And and look
two Strickler's Strickland's point, he had him, did hit him
in the hip, which if you're gonna hit a guy,
that's what you're not. He didn't buzz the tower. On
the other hand, Bryce Harper's like, why are you hitting me?
(34:43):
Because I hit two home runs off you a couple
of years ago in the playoffs, Like that doesn't make
any sense, um, But it's it's okay to not like
each other in sports. It's it's it's also okay to
have and it wasn't. It was a fight, but like
a last like five seconds, like the most damage done
is by two SAMs like so Marja tackled one of
his own dudes right like that was that was the
(35:06):
greatest contact with some margin and Michael Morris colliding into
each other like the Keystone Cops more so than the
two punches thrown. I don't know, Like I'm still talking
about it. We can't get people to talk about baseball
and they care about this fight. I kind of agree
with Jake Grey. And by the way, Michael Moore's on
the d L with a concussion which we cannot touch
on a little bit later on in the press, if
you will. But your one for one so far, and guests,
(35:27):
who let's try to make it too for two guests?
Who was right behind the American League leading vote getter
Mike Trout in balloting for the a L for the
All Star Game in July? Who was right behind Mike Trout,
Right behind Mike Trout and American League balloting? Uh, okay,
it's got to be a big team popular getting warmer, Okay,
(35:53):
So I mean the only teams could be used to
the Yankees the Red Sox and you're getting armor. Um
m hmm, I'm gonna go with Aaron Judge, yes too
for two, just right behind Trout, and you would think
with Trout's injury that Judge may be able to take
(36:13):
over the top spot. Seven hundred and thirty thousand votes
so far for the Yankee outfielders, second of all outfielders,
in second of anyone the any of the voting positions
for the American League. They're both easily outdistancing Mookie Bets
of the Red Sox, who's in third place with three
d and thirty seven thousand votes. So you're gonna see
Aaron Judge in the All Star Game, and he could
(36:33):
be the American League's leading vote getter. Seventeen home runs,
thirty seven RBI. You know. Yeah, by the way, he's
on base forty two percent of the time and just
seven granted only forty seven games into his full rookie season.
Did play a little bit at the end of last year,
and he has just had an incredible impact on the Yankees.
No astros, by the way, starters right now in the
(36:55):
American League. That can change Korea and maybe I'll two
getting to the top of their positions. I'm guess who
Doug doesn't know if Seahawks said coach Pete Carroll keeps
quarterback Russell Wilson accountable. So this person isn't sure if
Pete Carroll Doug Baldwin. That is honestly, I didn't even
read the entire article. I read parts of it. Um No.
I think Pete does a fantastic job of of handling
(37:18):
different individuals differently. You know, we all have our different personalities,
we all act different ways, and Pete does a fantastic
job of, you know, accommodating those personalities. That was Baldwin
on ESPN seven Tenants Seattle on Monday. But when you say,
I don't know if he what was the quote? That
was the quote, I don't know if he disciplines him,
(37:40):
if he holds him accountable. Yeah, then he doesn't hold
him accountable, right, if he's he's in the offensive. Now
what he might be saying is, I don't know if
they have different meetings that I'm not a part of,
over the quarterback conversations whatever. But when Doug Baldon said,
Baldwin says, I don't know if he holds him accountable.
He treats everybody differently. He knows. He's just saying, I
not sure. Really it matters because it works. And oh yeah,
(38:02):
by the way, Doug Baldwin had ninety four catches, eleven
yards and sevent tds a career year last year. Like last.
Thing he wants to do is kill what Russell Wilson's
doing anyway? Final one Doug to pay off that tease
guests who knew Lions offensive lineman and former Packers lineman
t J. Lange feels is a quote literal psychopath end quote.
What other player in the NFL a literal psychopath? Aaron
(38:25):
Rodgers No, No, and Dominicans sue, the now defensive lineman
for the Miami Dolphins who for a long time was
with the Lions, he was a literal psychopath. But t J.
Lang said, Hey, he meant that in a good way.
I do. I do think he meant it in a
good way. And that's what's in the sack that was
Scott leads sack. Yeah. I mean, like, listen, it's okay
(38:47):
to be a psychopath in the defensive line because the
offensive line is constantly cautious of what you're going to
do next. Part of the pre the job prerequisite. All right,
what's your set up for Game one? Share with me yours,
I'll share mine next Boom What Off America Doug Gottlieb Show,

to do so over an iTunes or wherever your podcast

(39:29):
plus five, twenty nine hours twenty nine hours from tip
off of Game one of the NBA Finals. Game one
of the NBA Finals. Can I ask you a questions?
Just a little question I have for you, um two
thousand six NBA Finals. How is the series? That's a serious?
(39:51):
Like if I said to you, if I said to
you last year's NBA Finals, good games, boring game games,
great games, what would your answer be? Let me read
you the final scores of the games last year one nine.
It's fifteen point difference, isn't it? Warrisan Game one? One ten?
(40:15):
Seventy seven, one ten, seventy seven, seventy seven that summer
on thirty Wow, what thirty seven point win one ninety
that's when the Calves won Game three, thirty point win
(40:37):
one ninety seven. That was Game four. That was when
um Draymond Green stood over, stood over Lebron James. Correct.
So that's that's a that's still an eleven point win.
Game five one twelve nine seven, it's fifteen point one
(41:02):
Game six one one o one. There wasn't a single
game until the final game that was decided by single digits,
not one, and then Game seven as much as all
we can remember is Lebron James incredible block, Kyrie Irving's
(41:22):
incredible shot, and Kevin Love stopping Steph Curry. Foresee Steph
Curry into a miss late. That wasn't a great game.
That was just an exciting finish. It's weird. The entire
NBA season, We've been waiting for these two teams, and
(41:42):
I hope we're going to get good games. But isn't
it funny how the last thing you see becomes the
only thing that matters. Isn't that interesting? The last thing
you see becomes the only thing that matters because last
year's a BA Finals, though interesting, and of course you
(42:03):
had to come back, the suspension, the injury to bog it,
you had a lot of things going on that the
games weren't really all that close, all that compelling within
the context of each individual game. So I'm warning you
now that if you put all of your eggs in
that one proverbial basket that you absolutely positively can't can't
(42:28):
wait and think that the entire future of basketball depends
on a closed game or two, you might be let down,
might be let down music, have you made a decision?
Like are you You're pretty fired about this, aren't you?
This is this is one of those you don't have kids,
but even if you did have kids, this is one
of those West Coast dominated times. Whether the West Coast
(42:50):
is not always the best coast watch sports? Why not?
Well here's why. Okay, So, like, if you really like
watching live sports, a lot of games start at four
in the afternoon, and that's just kind of problem bat Like,
I got a life like four in the afternoons too early. Additionally,
NFL games though they started what ten here? That sounds
(43:13):
like a good thing, but like, you don't get time
the East Coast. Here's where it really fits, the East Coast.
Like you get up on a Sunday morning, You've got
plenty of time. You gotta do stuff for your wife,
you gotta want to work out, playball, hang out with
the kids. Like you kind of have your whole morning
to go to church, to do your thing or whatever.
And then you come back and the games are on.
And then here's the best part, Sunday night football. Everybody's asleep.
(43:36):
That's what we do my house, my kids, we all
we we do straight up. I make the kids. We
don't gamp bet whatever take you take odds against your kids.
Know what they do. What we do is we we
whoever picks the most games correct gets ice, gets dessert
that night. Everyone else doesn't. Everybody else doesn't. That's interesting.
(43:57):
We're just do it for fun. So and then this
year I think they're gonna probably have a fantasy team
as well, Like we'll do a little fantasy league within
the And so my kids they think you can't watch
we have Red Zone on. We have a two TV deal.
We have Red Zone on one TV, another game on
and pop in. You watch it. You go do your thing,
you play outside, you pop in you watch it. Like,
I'm very reasonable about my TV viewing. But Sunday night,
(44:20):
my kids go to bed like Sundays is usually they're
worn down because they played sports all day Saturday. We
we we did something as a family early Sunday. Sunday night.
You clear, they're they're in bed eight o'clock reading eight fifteen,
lights out a thirty that kickoff for Sunday night football.
It's great West Coast, it's a little bit more like
(44:41):
I actually like to pay attention to my children, and
yet I'd like to pay attention to Sunday night football
or to the big game that's the one o'clock game. Here,
these games, if you're on the East Coast, really hard.
The NBA Finals started at nine o'clock. Yeah, it's not
for kids, know, and it's it's a killer because kids
love Lebron, They like Lebron, they love Steph Curry. It's
(45:05):
like Steph then Lebron, than Kevin durand these are three
of their favorites. And there's not a child out there
who's going to be watching this who's under the age
of like twelve or thirteen. You just can't. You can't
keep your kids up like, oh yeah, my kids can
stay up in a watch like, no, you can't. Kids
are terrorists. The next days some kids are out of
school so that it helps. But six o'clock it's pretty
(45:26):
good startime, SIS clock West Coast. It'll be weird in
Oakland because sis clock is still a ton of traffic
and hard to get in, hard to get out. I
think it'll be full at game time, but there'll there'll
be some seats there that it's hard to tell what's
full what's not full in these things because they got
the T shirts straped over the seats, right right, that's
a good point. So, uh, watching at home, going to
(45:49):
a sports bar? What's the plan? I watch at home.
Sometimes I'll go to a sports bar, but that's mainly
if I have someone in particular that I'm meeting up with,
whether it's like a coworker, friend, a couple buddies. Otherwise
I just like to watch at home. All right. What
about what about you? Dan Buyer, Um, what's the what's
the general? And obviously newly married, but your wife also
(46:11):
a sports fan. She works with us here at Fox
Sports Radio. Do you have a set game plan specifically
for Thursday? Game one? Six o'clock. Start what you're gonna do?
There is uh the great uh, the great variable of traffic, Doug.
And when I end here, I should be able to
go right home and sit down and watch the game.
And to be perfectly honest, she maybe do things around
(46:32):
our place, but I think at some point she will
take in the game on Thursday. Okay, So like do
you like do you? You do not want to be bothered? Um,
like do you like? Do you? I don't shut off
my phone. I don't want anybody calling me. I don't
want to persity down ask me questions like, oh, the
questions because I don't have any dog in the fight.
(46:52):
You know, I'm just observing neither teams or or my teams.
If it was in my team that I'm watching. I
do like to be um up it from a lot
of stuff, including social media during my games, but because
I don't care about other team, Um, it's all welcome,
it's all welcome. I struggle with the idea we call
it civilians. Me and my friends were basketball guys, were
(47:13):
basketball guys, and like basketball guys, we call it like civilians.
It's really hard to watch a game with a room
full of civilians. Dan and I fall in the category
of civilians probably, but no, you don't think if you
were you were an athlete, you were you're a volleyball player,
like you're an athlete, and Dan's been around sports, No,
I don't think so. Civilians are more people who like
(47:35):
don't understand sports, like they don't they just it's it's
can be really really hard. You know, where they're yelling
about things that at the TV they're just wrong, and
you don't. You're like stuck between like do I and
everybody wherever I go, people like one know the basketball
thing and to know the sports guy thing, So you
have to be the authority on everything. And I also
(47:56):
know I don't have all the answers, but I also
know I know a lot more about the school than
anybody else in the rooms. It's a hard thing. I
prefer to be in a room full of people that
kind of know sports. I can understand that, which is
why I said, like, if I'm gonna go somewhere and
watch the game, it's for the purpose of like I'm
going with someone who I know specifically that I'm meeting
up with their I don't really go for the idea
(48:18):
of like, oh, you know, it sounds fun going to
the bar where there's an atmosphere to watch. I would never.
I would never. I don't understand these people that go
to where there's a gathering of people to watch the games.
I just in addition to not understanding season ticket guy,
I don't understand like Toronto Raptor fan. What's that called
Jurassic Park where they watch outside? That seems to be
(48:39):
a miserable experience. Why the hell did I pay for
seventy in TV to be on my wall? Right? Like
all the good food is at home anyway, and if
I don't have it's actually not like like Dan setup
seems like heaven to me, Like I'd be some sweats
or my boxers eating whatever the hell I want if
(48:59):
I want to, if I don't during a commercial, if
I want to flip around, I can flip around. There's
not anybody I'm not. I don't have to watch the game.
If it gets to be thirty, I can click it off.
I can go do something else, right, or I can
press stop on the DVR, go to the restroom, talk
with my wife, Like that seems like a great I
don't like I'm I believe I'm going to game one, um,
(49:21):
kind of excited about it. We're gonna get done here
and I'm gonna get on a quick plane ride up
to the coast and and go like I like, I've
kind of and I feel a little bit weird about
We're not weird about not taking Dana and I it's
all right. No, I don't feel weird at all about
not taking you get no, No No, it's fine, it's fine.
Don't worry. No, Dan's busy. I'm busy. It's okay. Don't no, no, no, no,
(49:41):
that's not no. No. I feel like I haven't had
to call in favors for this. I would last year.
I thought about call in favors to go to Game seven,
Like Game seven feels like when you go to you
gotta play. On the other hand, it is actually better
unless you have really good seats. And I have no
idea what I did not get these seats. Somebody else
is taking me. Um, unless you have really good seats.
(50:05):
A lot of times it's better to watch it at home.
You miss so much, like you can't. You're looking up
at the replay like, oh like everybody else. And frankly,
I like listening to Jeff Van Gundy call games. Breen
and Van Gundy and Mark Jackson, he's okay, uh, And
it's got to be hard for Mark Jackson because he's
the only guy who couldn't win with these guys, right,
(50:27):
I mean, it's it's the it's the Doug Collins calling
his Chicago Bulls in the NBA Finals, sort of feeling
like he did a good job but not nearly as
good a job as the guys who followed him. So
he's he's he's done, he's grown out of that. It's
but it's still hard, right, Like he's still like, hey, wait,
I coached these team in the playoffs. We were just
getting better and pulled the rug out from under me.
Like it's a hard deal. And I just I think
(50:49):
that Van Gundy sees the world the way I see
the world. And I really like listening to the call
the games. So it's not perfect to watch a game
in person. Um, and I you know, it's like one
of those things. I don't know if I'll get to
go to a game seven, so I'm gonna take the
shot at the game one. And there does there's a
certain pageantry to it, right, Um, it's like going to
the super Bowl, although I'll admit watching the super Bowl
(51:12):
is better than going to the super Bowl. Watching the
Final four on TV better than going to the Final four. Dan,
you've been to several I have not been to any live.
Do you agree with that He's right about the Final four,
especially not with the set up. There's no way I
would ever want to buy a ticket to a Final four,
considering now when they put the court in the middle.
Super Bowl is super Bowl is different because you're you
(51:33):
realize all the people around the world I think that
are watching and you're one of the select few of
the seventy thousand that are there. I'll take Final four,
but being at the super Bowl is is something else. Well,
here's what I'll say about about and I've done both
several times here in the last couple of years. Okay, Um,
super Bowl Week is a lot better than it used
(51:53):
to be because it used to be so corporate. Now
they do have a lot of concerts and events, and
maybe this is also part of being in the profession
that I can go to these. If I was a fan,
I don't think it's close. I would go to a
Final four just because Final four is a lot more interactive.
They're doing a better job at the at the Super
Bowl of making fans kind of welcome and making uh
(52:14):
some of the NFL. But but if you're a basketball guy,
the Final four has always been better. It's it's actually
going the other way. It's going towards the NFL. It's
becoming more corporate. Standpoint out, it's harder to watch being
in the middle of these domes, but it's still a
more fan friendly environment the week is. But also when
you look at the games, I mean when you look
at the actual three hour event that you are watching
(52:35):
the six hour on the semifinal, No, it's I I
didn't I'll be honestly, I didn't go to the semifinal.
It was in Scottsdale. I was were in Scottsdale this year.
I had my took my then seven year old son
or eight year old son, and we had some friends
in town and I was like, dude, you want to
go to the semifinals and he's like two games. I
was like yeah, Like dad, I'll get too tired, I'll
(52:56):
get too bored. And I was like, you know what,
You're right, you'll be annoying and I won't get to
watch the games. So we were staying in a nice hotel.
We watched the games on on TVs right outside the
pool can we swam and cooked out. We went to
the finals. It was great. It was in person and
we we took a red eye afterwards, but that was
a good The semifinals are the best night. But it's
really it's a long two back to back games, plus
(53:19):
like forty five minutes in between. It's a long time
to be sitting there watching games that you can barely see. Anyway,
Dr Robert three three. My wife is an ultra civilian viewer.
It's comical. Yeah, I just like, yeah, I didn't know
Deron Williams plays for the Calves. Darren Darren, Darren Williams. Yeah,
(53:42):
Darren Williams. Steph's got a beard. Now, why doesn't he
shave that beard? Can? We like? This is kind of
like other stuff going on. Wait, Mike, who's the I
thought Steve Kerr was the coach of the civilians. Shakas
mart is gonna join us up coming next. I saw
(54:04):
where Kevin Durant sent him a pair of his special
k D shoes. What does he think of the burden
that the former Texas Longhorn star carries, I'll ask him.

beautiful Los Angeles of the cities in the country to
which somebody says they're moving there, right, You're like, Okay,
(54:49):
that doesn't suck, right, Like, I got a buddy who's
uh in the process of moving from this job from
the other job. I tell you all, I'm going to
Los Angeles, Like, oh, it doesn't stay buddy of mine,
he's well, I'm moving to Austin. Like okay, it's kind
of point you l A is great, Austin might even
be better. And the guy who's the king of Austin
on the basketball floor is Shaka Smart course, he famously
(55:12):
took VCU to the Final four, and boy they got
some momentum now Uh, a great recruiting class, a couple
of kids sitting out, and what was a bit of
a disappointing season for the Horn seems to have turned
with this recruiting season. Chaka Smart joins us on Fox
Sports Traders. Shaka, how are you? I'm great? How are
(55:32):
you good? Man? Um, let's let's I don't want to
I don't want to go blow by blow on your season,
but like, look, you you come in with such a
great reputation and it hasn't been easy, changing styles and
changing regions of the country. Is it fair to say that,
like next year is the year that everybody expects it
to hit. I think we got a chance to take
(55:55):
a really, really big jump as a program. Um, if
that's what you mean. I mean, as you though, it's
it's always a progression, uh, and you certainly can't skip steps.
But yeah, I think I think we have a chance
to have a significantly better year. Yeah. And now, of
course that's hurt, uh, Like like it is, but for
(56:16):
so many coaches at a high level, when you lose
a freshman to the to the NBA Draft, Now that
you're kind of on the and you've been on the
side of things when you're back at Florida when a
National Championships and assistant coach, but now is a head coach.
When how do you look and you see a super
talented freshman like Jared Allen decide Jared Allen decided to
(56:36):
make the jump? What what's your assessment of the one
and done role? That probably could take longer time than
we have, But I think this. I think if you're
going to recruit guys that are highly, highly talented um,
then you have to understand that what goes along with
that is really lofty aspirations to play at the next
(57:01):
level and in today's climate, to play at the next
levels as soon as possible. So I think it's unrealistic
to want one without the other. Uh So for us,
we just try to focus on helping these guys grow
and develop as players, as people so that you know
when they are faced with that decision and if they
do decide, hey, I want to I want to take
(57:23):
my my talents to the next level. They're ready to
be successful. I I get that, But like this is
two years and two different situations where you've kind of
been snake bid by, like Jared Allen's gonna get picked right,
he's gonna be a first round pick, super talented. Last
year you had Isaiah Taylor, who was a junior but
a point guard. He doesn't get selected, and and it
feels like they should go back to that rule to
where if you don't get drafted, you can come back
(57:45):
to school. Like that seems to be an easy fix.
I understand that agents get involved and money gets owed
and and maybe you know, eligibility becomes a question, but
you got the whole summer, Like if I put Shaka
Smart in charge of basketball, just hey man, you set
the rule, You've lived it, you understand it. What's what
are reasonable rules to have? It's a great question, and
(58:08):
I'll answer your question, But before I do, I'll tell
you that I don't think there's any one size fits
all model because the Lebrons, the Kevin Durant's, uh, those guys,
they're they're obviously so unbelievably talented that if they should
be able to go to the NBA, I think as
soon as they get done with high school. Um, you know,
(58:30):
the the question is, as you know, what about guys
that are not quite on that level but are still
quote unquote elite prospects and you know, I don't know
that there's there's any perfect model. I do think that
the more information that these guys have, accurate information uh
from NBA teams in terms of where they are valued
(58:53):
at the current time, the better it is for them
to make an informed decision. And I agree with you,
whatever is best for for the guys is what we
should do. So even if that means, you know, a
guy thought one thing was going to happen, and maybe
he didn't get picked or or didn't have the opportunity
thought he he would have, then you know, the the
(59:13):
opportunity to still take advantage of the situation he has
in college. Um. We we we want kids to have
that opportunity. Um, you landed Mo Bamba and if if
anybody hasn't like he is the in the in the
era of the rim protector. And when we get ready
for the upcoming draft, they talk about guys being long
like this kid's kids are crazy, crazy crazy talent. What
(59:38):
are reasonable expectations for him coming in? Yeah, you know
that's always interesting for these really really good players coming in. UM.
I think for Moe just first of all, he's he's
a phenomenal uh, you know, a package of person first
of all, player and personality. When we went down to
(01:00:03):
Chile for the eighteen and under UH tournament of the
America's FIBA America's Tournament, we literally had a group of
Chilean kids in the crowd and it was it grew
every day that had this Mo Bomba for President cheering section.
And that's just the type of aura and personality that
(01:00:24):
he has. But uh, in terms of expectations, you know,
he's he's really got a diverse skill set. As you mentioned,
he's extremely long, uh Defensively, he you know, he can
change the game in a lot of different ways, not
just at the basket. Um. But he's a guy that
you know, we're we we really think he's gonna impact winning. Uh.
(01:00:45):
And that's that's the thing that you know, as I
talked to a lot of NBA scouts about Jared Allen,
is that they're getting ready for the draft. Regardless of
who the prospect is, they want to know, Hey, is
this guy gonna make us win? Is he canna help
us win? And uh, you know, I definitely think that's
something when when Mo gets going, he'll be able to
do Yeah, I would I would guess the answer I
mean seven ft nine inch wingspan, nine ft six in
(01:01:09):
standing reaches, just crazy and he has so many other
parts to what he does. Can't wait to see him
in the in the Burnt Orange. Speaking of Burnt Orange,
you mentioned Kevin Durant. I saw where he sent you
a pair of his special shoes that they're gonna break
out and sell Game one. Look, even guys like you
who have a Nike deal, it's always good to get
free kicks, especially once that nobody else has um. Well,
(01:01:30):
the funny thing is the guys, the guys walk in
my office because I have him right here on the
on the table in my office, and they said, well,
what about ours? You know where is ours? But we
we just got some in the mail for those guys,
so they're getting a couple of pairs themselves. He's just
he's just super unique guy. Like for people who don't remember,
like he played for Rick Rick Barnes. He didn't play
(01:01:50):
for you, but he stayed incredibly connected to you, to
the university, to the program. It's a really big part
of who he is. Uh, what what's it? And like, look,
you been as you pointed out, you've been connected with
USA basketball. So all those elite guys you've got the
chance to work with be around as well. What what's
he really like to somebody who didn't coach him but
(01:02:11):
now coaches at his school. Well, he is the most authentic,
down to earth guy. And it's sometimes I have to
remind myself who who I'm texting, because I'll send him
a text message and he just writes you right back.
I mean, he's uh, he's really really a basketball junkie.
(01:02:33):
He he loves the game at all levels. He follows
the game. He takes a lot of pride in Texas.
I think he had a really good experience here, not
just on the court, but in terms of you mentioned
Austin on the intro. I think he really values the city,
in the in the university. He comes back here. He
plays pick up with our guys every fall, which is
(01:02:56):
pretty neat because those guys try to measure him self
against him and they say, yeah, I'm gonna do this
and I'm gonna do that. But then when they get
out there, they realize this is why this guy is
one of the top you know, two or three guys
in the world. And uh, you know they have a
rough time with him. Yeah, I know, and then he left, Billy,
He left your guy in Oklahoma City to go to
to to go to Golden State. Is it me or
(01:03:18):
and maybe this is just the basketball junkie in me.
We talked about all these different things. Doesn't it kind
of come down to who can get a rebound, who
can get a stop? You know, who can get up
who can get a bucket at the end of these game?
And it's hard because the games, six of the seven
games last year were blowouts, but it does feel like
the proximity of these teams are pretty close, and it's
then it's then it's gonna end up being decided by
(01:03:40):
a possession or two. Isn't the old kind of old
school basketball thoughts of a stop, a rebound? Uh, those
turnover in a bad spot, That's what ultimately leads to
who's being a champion, There's no question. And you know,
if there's such a small margin for air, such a
fine line between winning and losing. You mentioned Billy I
was up there last summer and they were showing me
(01:04:01):
a bunch of the analytical stuff they do, and they
had figured out that one extra point scoring one extra
point on offense, UH, was the equivalent of winning, it
was like three and a half more games just just
scoring one more point over the course of an NBA season.
So yeah, it's definitely a maker miss game. And guys
(01:04:24):
like Kevin Durant, you know, though, there's a reason they're
the best, because they're the best at making you know,
it's I I feel like and again I'm I cover it,
you live it. But I do feel like, even though
there's a disparity in the two elite teams and the
rest of the league, the way in which these two
teams play one making the extra pass, sharing the bull,
(01:04:44):
but you know, the Warriors run emotion offense like they're
actually moving and cutting. It's really good basketball. I do
feel like the basketball itself is in a really good
place in comparison to NBA basketball of ten fIF teen
years ago. As a basketball coach, agree or disagree with that, No,
(01:05:04):
I really agree, And I think you know, you know
is when you're in college, you don't get the opportunity
to file the NBA is closely until the spring and
when the playoffs come around. But I really feel like,
you know, obviously that wasn't the same Spurs team that
that played in the conference finals because of injuries. Uh,
the Celtics were affected by you know, Isaiah Thomas being
(01:05:26):
heard and all that. But I feel like that there
was some really, really good basketball that was played. It
just so happened that these two teams, Golden State and
Cleveland are are just so much better and they're playing
at such a high level. So I hope that we
can really relish and enjoy these next several games because
(01:05:48):
there's gonna be a lot of fun to watch, you know,
k D. Last thing it real quick, is it k
D has come out and said, hey, you know, this
is not the end. I'll be all for me. My
life will not change greatly if I win a championship.
Don't win a championship Like that sounds good. Be also
hasn't won a championship. I know he's authentic, but is
he simply trying to downplay the pressure that's on him.
I'm not really sure I agree. I'm I'm not sure.
(01:06:09):
I know I disagree with that statement specific because he
hasn't won a championship. What's your take on k D
pointing out this is not kind of the this is
not going to be the top of the mountain for
me if we win it nor will be devastating if
we lose it. Well, I think the first thing is, uh,
just like any of those other uh generational players are
(01:06:31):
super elite players that the guys that were great when
you and I were growing up, those guys are all
driven to win at the highest level. And I think
everybody knows that. But I mean, what else are you
gonna say when the media is is on you about it?
And the reality is there's a lot of different things
that go into winning. So he's gonna do everything he
(01:06:54):
possibly can to make his team win, but he also
understands there's a lot of different variables. I mean just
and not just in professional basketball college basketball. I do
think sometimes we forget that a lot of the all
time greats, including Jordan's, uh, it took them some time
(01:07:14):
to win. It's not like they just came into the
league and rolled out of bed and won championships. Uh.
So it took them some time. And I think this
is gonna be just fascinating to watch these finals, and um,
you know, I know Kevin is going to be, you know,
extremely locked in on doing everything he can to make
(01:07:35):
his team win. Well, I know next year is a
huge year for You've got the two week trip to Australia.
My guy dealing us us A Kowski gets eligible from Tulane.
You got to point guard Coleman coming in. You got
Mo Bamba, a lot of big expectations. Meantime, enjoy the games,
enjoy those new kicks. I look, i'd make them go
make some buckets before the Longhorns get some some of
those new kicks. But enjoy those kds. And thanks so
(01:07:56):
much for being our guest. On we almost had you
in the league. Man, what do you mean Oklahoma State? Oh,
I know we did. I know, I know I wouldn't
be speaking so highly about your recruiting class. I would.
I would say all those guys are overrated. But you know,
like listen, it almost happened. I almost had to uh
to bang heads with you. I'm glad. I'm glad it
(01:08:18):
did not after I saw what you cleaned up in recruiting. Well,
I just want you to know that, um, I probably
more so than any of any of our current players,
but I have a cute awareness of how good of
an assist man you were when you played. So that's
something I appreciate, all right, I do. I appreciate that
especially because Rick used to Rick used to talk trash
(01:08:39):
to me over on the sideline. We never beat the
Horns in Austin, and uh he was he like, you
have been more than kind of me. Hey, Shaka, thanks
so much for joining us. Let's catch up soon in person.
In the meantime, have a great summer with the Horns.
Thanks so much. Thanks for having me. All right, that's
shock a smart head coach of the Long Horns given
just kind of little flavor of Kevin Durant. Steve has
(01:09:01):
offered an opinion on whether or not he'll be missed
not coaching so far in the finals. Find out what
he had to say. It takes more than a roof

(01:09:25):
Fox Sports Radio. It's funny, Shaka caught me kind of
off card. It's like you always having in the league.
I'm thinking when you say the league, I thought he
was making like NBA. Like, no, you weren't coaching the NBA.
You were like a you're Clemson and then at Florida
and he's like, no, the Big Twelve is like, oh,
it seems like a lifetime ago that I was I
interviewed for the Oklahoma state job and did not get it.
Really does speaks to how much I enjoy working with
(01:09:46):
you Ran music. It just really a no. I'm I'm
I'm having a blast doing doing this and you know,
things work out for a reason that they're loading up.
They had a had a down year, finishing last place
in the Big Twelve, but I would guess Oklahoma and
Oklahoma who added a kid named Trey Young's like kind
of got a Steph Curry type of game to bring
(01:10:07):
everybody else back. And Texas, who was at the bottom league,
they'll be at the top of the league next. They
got dudes, dudes coming in. Um anyway, fascinating, fascinating stuff
in terms of in terms of Kevin Durant, like Kevin Durant,
Steph Curry. I can only tell you this and this
(01:10:29):
is not in any way reflective of Kevin Love and
Kyrie Irving, Like I find Kyrie to be a fascinating
dude as well, kind of putting it out there. Maybe
he could retire early. Hey, you just you had all
those injuries early in your career. Now you just got
it going. While you're talking about why are you talking
about hanging him up early? But and I haven't heard
(01:10:50):
anything bad about a matter of fact, Kyrie Irving's old
AU coaches in Los Angeles got named Sandy Pione and
I I hung out with him for a half hour yesterday.
We were talking about Kyrie. But all I can tell
you about those guys are I've never heard anybody say
like not Kevin Rantophony or Na Steph Currys the Phony.
(01:11:12):
But I gotta get some of those kicks, right, got it?
Have you seen him yet? Yeah? You get sneaker heads
at all. I'm I mean, I like shoes, but I'm not.
I wouldn't consider myself a sneaker. I don't really understand.
Like I like the old school Michael Jordan's like all
the retro ones like I like, But there are guys
that seriously freak out about Jordan's like I, oh, the George's,
(01:11:32):
the Jordan's like I like. Don't get me wrong, I
have several pair of the retro ones. I wore Jordan's
two prom the patent leather ones. I warmed the prom
like and I'm a sneaker guy, but a lot of
the Jordan brand stuff. I like that the Kobe's more,
the k Ds more more than the Lebron's. Then people
complain about the Lebrons like their boots, like, yeah, dude,
he's six two sixty pounds. He needs bigger, thicker shoes
(01:11:55):
than other guys do. Speaking of needing pat and support, uh,
that's what Steve Kerr needs. Steve Kerr said he didn't
think doesn't think it will matter that he might not
coach in the finals. There's a lot for me to
assess in terms of my whether I should jump out there.
We're doing fine without me. Honestly, I don't think it
(01:12:16):
will matter too much to the team. I think we'll
be fine no matter what we do, because we're gonna
do the same stuff. I'm there. I've been messaging, watching film,
breaking down everything. I'll do that before and after the game,
whether I'm coaching or not. But it's it's just a
weird situation. Kerr went on to say, I think just
it's the Finals, there's gonna be a spotlight. Is it distraction?
(01:12:36):
Is it another storyline? Do we need to deal with that,
I don't know. Ultimately, I don't think I can worry
about that. I've got to play it by year. If
I'm feeling good, I should coach. And if I'm not,
if I'm not feeling up to it, then I shouldn't.
It's that simple. Uh. I don't think there will be
two games that the Warriors win that it won't matter
(01:12:58):
because they just have so much weaponry, and there'll be
a game or maybe two that they'll lose to which
it won't matter, but it'll matter, like managing Draymond Green
calling out a bounds place substitutions in big moments, just
the there's just an inherent trust factor there that I think.
(01:13:22):
And and part of this is who Steve Steve Kurt
taking the pressure off of Mike Brown, taking the pressure
off the players, taking some of it on himself, offering
up it could be a distraction if he comes back,
which it's just it's just an out tip. Isn't another
storyline it is. It's interesting, It's really interesting. And you
(01:13:43):
know Mike Brown still being paid by the Calves after
being fired out once but twice by the Calves, both
times right before they lost Lebron James and before they
got Lebron James back. Like all of that is interesting
but doesn't affect basketball. I think it does. As Chaka
Smart said that Oklahoma City with their analytics, one point
(01:14:06):
on offense equates to again, this is an NBA season
three wins, and I kind of think we all know
this is gonna come down to six or seven. One
point here, one stop there, one substitution here. Con Cowherd
(01:14:26):
had his thoughts in the popularity of the NFL versus
the NBA. It's part of what did the Fox say?
It's next in the Doug Gotlip Show. This is the
Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox. To find out what other
people in your area paid for the same car you're
looking for, new or used? Is the true car? To
enjoy more confident car buying experience. Doug Gotlip Show. Fox
Sports Radio man Dan Buyer will get the press going
(01:14:48):
next hour. But we tried this time of the show
to bring back something you might have missed earlier on
Fox Sports Radio. We got a great lineup, Clay Travis,
who has been broadcasting and trolling from the beach somewhere,
Dan Patrick Uh and then Colin Coward as well as
the litany of great hosts we have following the Steve Gorman,
JT The Brick, Ben Mueller, Jason Smith. I don't think
(01:15:11):
I missed anybody. Did I know? We got a great
Fox Sports radio family on our weekday lineup? Uh, let's
let's do what we do every day. Let's play what
did the Fox say? And now? My man Colin Cowarhard
had this to say on the popularity of the NBA
versus the NFL. Take a listen the ESPN World Fame
one rankings. No NFL players top twenty. The NFL in
(01:15:37):
this poll shows why it's the NFL. It is not
beholden to one player. That poll that came out did
not show an NFL weakness. What it showed his how
unbelievably strong the league is. This is a league built
on a structure, not on a star, built on the shield,
(01:16:01):
built on the brands. But it's it's also uh. It
also speaks to the just the idea of like football,
it's hard when you're behind a mask. We talked about
this yesterday, right trying to get out from behind the mask,
behind the shield, catching Kelsey and Odell Beckham Jr. Taking
off his helmet, so you can see his hair, his personality.
Like Julio Jones is the best wide receiver. He can
(01:16:22):
walk down the street in New York City, walk down
the street in in l A. You would think he's
an NBA player. You're like, but I don't recognize him,
So he's not a good NBA player, right, And just
part of it his NBA players you can see their faces,
even like Paul George is a bigger name, not because
he's great, but because you remember him breaking his leg
(01:16:43):
and you see him in his game right at that
much bigger? So I um, I mean, I I don't
know if that's it. Does it speak to the fact
that they're not beholden to a player yet it also
speaks to that the NBA has done a great job
of building these personalities. But it also speaks to the
(01:17:06):
fact that personalities are built because you can see them,
like in in soccer, like Ronaldo is a really good
looking dude. Any Christiano Ronaldo, and he's got really good hair.
But if he played football, like, would you know he's
really good looking with good hair? No, So part of
it just the sport in which you play and thus
how you're promoted and that's of course how it translate
(01:17:28):
your your cue writing or your your popularity. Right, I'm
always interested by that. Mike Tyson's gonna join us next hour.
We're gonna ask about his cartoon. I like his cartoon. Yeah,
talk about his cartoon. He's got a book. He's got
a book, he's got TV show. He's also he's at
the Broadway show as well. You know, he's Mike Tyson.
(01:17:49):
So we can talk to him about what it's like
being Mike Tyson. No, I've heard him so many times
speak about his downfall and kind of the rise has
been amazing, right, But I want to ask him about
Tiger Woods. Obviously, two completely different backgrounds, completely different upbringings,
(01:18:10):
but both at one point in their lives were at
the absolute peak of their sport, and for different reasons,
there was a downfall. How do you dust yourself off?
How do you not how do you not live in
the past, feel bad, feel sorry for yourself? I'm gonna
ask Mike Tyson. Gonna join me next on the Doug
(01:18:32):
Godlip Show only on Fox Sports Radio. What Up It's
Dog Gotlip Show? Fox Sports Radio. You have to be
how do you have to be to really understand what
Mike Tyson was a right because you can look at
(01:18:53):
the fifty wins in forty four by knockout, he was
the undisputed heavyweight champion the world. Like, you can look
at all of those things and you can draw a
conclusion if you're uh, if you're thirty or younger, you
could say like, oh, well, he was heavyweight champion. I
know some of the story. And now he's back, he's
(01:19:13):
got his own I watch Mike Tyson mysteries. I know
he had a Broadway show. I remember from Hangover. Wasn't
it awesome? And a hangover? I don't. I'm forty one,
and I remember in the eighties you'd hear about Mike
Tyson and then you'd watch him and he'd come out
(01:19:35):
and he had black shoes, no socks, black trunks. I
think it was a towel. He cut the neck, the
head part out of the towel and just put and
just come in. And it was and you were just like,
I don't know who that guy is, or I know
Mike Tyson is, but that other guy's in trouble. And
it was awesome and you're both afraid of him, intimidated
(01:19:58):
by him. But you respected him at the same time,
the last of the great Powerfully, he wasn't necessarily like
a Vander Holyfield, Um and others Lennox Lewis were champions
after him, but in terms of memorable, intimidating, respected, dynamic,
(01:20:18):
he was the last of the heavyweights. Like that. He's
joined us now on the Doug Otlip Show on Fox
Sports Radio. Was that a towel that you used to
cut the neck out of? Or was that circle around
and put them over my head? Was it? Was it
all for intimidation? Like, look, I don't need all this
ornate stuff exactly. Yes, did you wear socks? I had
(01:20:43):
to be some funky feet, although you never had the
shoes on that long because the fights didn't last that long.
Really took a beating, Mike, why no socks? Why? Why?
Why that? Like? How did you come upon that look?
Because that's how Jack Dempsey looked when he was fighting
to have any sock. We look a little medicine and ominous.
(01:21:04):
And it even worked today eighty years later that he
was still worked. Does still work? Mike Tyson, there's a
new new book out called The Iron Ambition, My Life
with custom motto and there's some some there's some parallels
here um to your life with custom Motto. I want
to talk to you about Tiger Woods in a moment
his life with his dad. The first time you met
custom Otto was went nineteen seventy nine. I believe where
(01:21:30):
were you? What was the meeting? Like? I met him
in the boxing gym and he watched me spar and
he asked me how old I was. I told him
I was thirteen years old. He didn't believe I was thirteen,
and then he found out I was really thirteen from
my birth active again, he said, we had the new
Labright champ of the world. So when did you When
did you decide you wanted him to train you? Like,
(01:21:51):
how did it work that he got to train you?
He has started training me. He I didn't make any rules.
He made all the rule of you training me. I
was going to do this and I will be heavily champions.
I had no really input. He taught you. He taught
you famiously the peekaboo style. If how would you describe
the peekaboo style keeps your hands up, the elbow stuck
(01:22:15):
in closed. Yeah, yeah, you're lag will be showed the
length apart, did it went? And and now when you
rose to stardom, did you always use that or was
what that? What used just an amateurs? I use it
mostly in the amateurs and then the probe as well.
(01:22:35):
Mike Tyson joining us on the Doug Otlip Show on
Fox Sports Radio, do you remember the first like custom
motto lesson that that was embedded in your brain? And
we've all had those long time, and i know how
big a part of his life, and I'm sure this
book tells you, But what was the first thing that
he said to you that just resonated that you this
guy was different than other men that had tried to
(01:22:57):
be part of your life. Well, the chief that woman
that he wanted the best out of me, and by
getting the best out of me, he had to get
hard work out of me. But how do you do that? Like,
how do you a thirteen year old kid who thinks
he knows everything that comes from a tough upbringing, how
do you get the best up I've already had a
little bit of a wild lifestyle, so I was looking
for some guys by then. So Customer was that guy.
(01:23:19):
And so when he when he passed, how did that
affect you well, you know, well, I can't even explain that.
Um it was just a minister's part of me was
going as well? Is that what I mean? The peekaboo
style started to kind of go away. I just wonder
if when he died, if that's what kind of changed you.
(01:23:41):
You became a little bit more erratic. You Yeah, like
look useduld just ding ding. You'd come out and you
try and kill the other dude. It wasn't as much
boxing technique as much finesse. I just wonder if that
was part of the reaction to his death, you could
you could be right by that, because I guess that
part of me died with him when he died. How
when did you get over it? Or are you even
(01:24:03):
over it now? I don't think you think you ever
to get over something like that. And that's so personal
intimate Mike Tyson joining us. How what about writing the book?
Did that become cathartic? Did it start to to make
you feel more whole, make you understand all that you've
been through? Well a little bit a lot of pain
in that process as well, But make the second like
(01:24:25):
the first book. We got over it And there's a
lot about because I didn't know, and Um, I figured
out things about because that was very interesting. Give me,
give me one thing. I don't want you to go
into the whole book, because I want people to buy
this book. It's called Iron Ambition, My life with Custom Model.
One thing that you learned in researching and being part
of this book that customers sent Tony Solano? Really, Yeah,
(01:24:50):
what was your reaction when you found that I ain't
no custom well with those guys because it was always
faith to stay awaiting those guys. Those guys are bad news.
Knowing he was friends with these guys, to grew up
with these guys, that was pretty shocking. Anybody ever tell you,
ask you or try and get you to take a dive?
Never ever do you think anybody ever took a dive
(01:25:13):
when you got in the ring with him? I doubt it. Um,
you've been through a lot, and like you've you've had
this rise like now at fifty. I mentioned like you're
part of this new Superhuman show which debuts premiers June
twelve on Fox. You have this book, I like watching
the Mike Tyson mysteries. You've been in movies. What was
(01:25:36):
there a moment to which you felt like your life
changed and and you you found I don't know, calmness
within it. I get to know it was time to
grow up. It's all about growing up and about doing
positive days and leaving privoitive legacy for your children. Mike
Tyson joining us on the on the Doug Gottlieb Show,
(01:25:58):
What's Next? Like, you're you're doing all these things, you're
writing books. Is there something you have yet to accomplish
that you want to accomplish? I don't know, maybe some
standard stuff, didn't you do like a one man show? Though?
How how different is stand up from your one man show? Yeah?
But it wasn't um, it wasn't a comedy standards like
comedy my life of comedy? Yeah? Yeah, So you want
(01:26:22):
to do like real comedy. You don't want to tell
stories about your life that people I don't want my
life to be the comedy? How do you? But how
does that feel that when people make fun of the
things that you have done in your life and like, look,
you've been able to grow from it, You've been able
to survive it, and I I and I understand, like
you can laugh it off, But how does it honestly
(01:26:43):
feel inside when people point out your the things that
you have done now that you're a dad, you're fifty,
How does how do what? What goes on inside you
when you hear that it's something that you just you know,
what can I do? There's something um and something that's
if part life you know, you can't get over. You
have to own it. I remember once it was a
(01:27:04):
powerful interview you did and you said, you want to
see a tragedy hand in nineteen year old a couple
of million dollars when he doesn't have kind of any
guidance in your life. That that's that's about accurate for
what you said. Correct, absolutely, Okay, So how how do
we change that? How do we because because I think
part of us in society we want young athletes to
(01:27:25):
reap the benefits of their success. On the other hand,
a lot of it is too much too soon, like
if you could go back, how do we fix that?
That good mentory mentors that's it's it's it's so hard.
Tiger Woods now he's I don't know if you saw
he had a d u I it appears to be
prescription medication um. And a lot of people think that
(01:27:47):
it's not just his his golf game going bad and
the multiple back surgeries, but the death of his father
that that's that's his mentor how would you if you
were to, if you were to counsel Mike Tyson's to
counsel Tiger Woods, what would you tell him and listen?
I don't know. I don't know time I do, I
don't know his pain. I don't know the feeling. I
don't know how I've accepted this pain. You know, he
(01:28:09):
has to figure it out, man, because he can't be
doing what's going on, and he really doesn't look good.
It does. It's not a good look for him, right
I I used and that's kind of state. Yeah, it's
it's it's really sad. Uh. The book is called Iron Ambition,
My Life with custom motto, Mike, I'd love to meet
you in person, break bread and listen to some of
those stories. In the meantime, I'll have to pick up
(01:28:30):
this book or watch you on Superhuman on Fox on
June twelve. Thanks so much for joining us, h All.
I appreciate Iron Mike Tyson joining us on the Dug
Olip Show. You have to It's it's one of those
eras in sports to which you have to have lived.
You gotta understand the heavyweight chance the heavyweight division was
not loaded. Like here's if this is this is crazy? Okay, uh,
(01:28:55):
Dan Buyer available or he is he currently currently working?
Not available? Okay? Ryan? Do you know who the heavyweight
champion in the world is right now? Is it Klitchko?
Or didn't he lose? I think he lost? Okay, then
I have no idea if it's because he was sort
of held it for a little while there, he actually
held it for a long time. I believe. I think
he might have held it. I don't. It might have
(01:29:17):
been like seven years he was the heavyweight. Like seriously,
it's crazy. No one knows who the heavyweight champion of
the world is, Nick, Right, you're in for Ramos, Nick,
Do you know who the heavyweight champion of the world is?
Absolutely no clue? Amazing, right Mayweather? Oh no, no, no,
(01:29:37):
it may actually be Vladimir CLIs. I thought it was
Tyson Fury. Didn't Tyson Fury? Didn't he hold it? Well,
here's also the problem. There's multiple belts, right, multiple belts,
multiple divisions. That's where I also get confused. Well, boxing
has boxing has gone the way of like high school sports, right,
like high school basketball and football? Uh Hoosiers? Actually right now,
(01:30:01):
this is crazy, right? The w B O is Joseph Parker, Like,
does anybody have any idea who Joseph Parker is? Or
Anthony Joshua is the ib F and w B A
super heavyweight champion in the world. Anybody have any idea
who these people actually are? No clue? Like I know
Deontay Wilder, Like Deontay Wilder. Have you ever seen him
(01:30:23):
in Percy? Ever seen him fight? Like that dude? Is
that dude is an athlete? He's six seven, crazy reach,
incredible story. Um, the Brown Bombers really really good? Was was?
I like him a lot? I've interviewed him several times.
Tyson Fury was the champion, but like, nobody knows who
the heavyweight champion is, so I understand that Tyson fought,
(01:30:45):
you know, the Trevor Berbicks of the world and obviously
lost to Buster Douglas is the famous Like that was
the shot heard around the world. It's crazy, what's happened
to boxing. It's hard to explain to people the Mike
Tyson thing if you didn't live through the Mike Tyson thing.
And most people think of the Mike Tyson thing. They
think of the ear biting right as they think of
(01:31:08):
the problem with Tyson. Tyson also went through the same
thing as Muhammad Ali. Different obviously, Muhammad Ali protesting war,
not wanting to go to war, lost three years of
his prime. Tyson lost because he went to jail for right.
But that was at the peak of Mike Tyson, and
he was never the same out of jail ever. Um,
But he's also never the same. After he lost customto
he stopped becoming. He stopped. He wasn't a technical boxer anymore.
(01:31:31):
He was just It's all speed, quickness, explosiveness and intimidation.
But man, did he intimidate people anyone? Byron Scott's gonna
join us up coming next, I'll get his thoughts on
both teams in the finals and uh can Magic turn
around his Lakers? That's upcoming next. Broadcasting live from the
(01:31:57):
studios of Fox Sports Radio, here's Doug Godlib Wi True Car.
You can find out what other people in your area
paid for the same car you're looking for, and on average,
table over three thousand off m s r P. Whether
you're looking for a new or used car, Visit True
Car to enjoy more confident car buying experience. Doug Godlim Show,
(01:32:22):
Fox Sports Radio. Byron Scott's gonna join us in uh
in moments, the now former Hornets Nets Lakers coach, UH
former NBA analysts as well. We'll be we'll be our guest.
UH saw him working out. He works out at a
gym that I sometimes happened upon. Byron Scotts wants dudes
(01:32:43):
like I don't. He does not age it at all.
It's not age at all. It's crazy. Everybody in in
in basketball, everybody in sports getting ready for this for
the NBA finals, right, It's it's weird because so much
of what we love about sports, and so much of
(01:33:05):
the value of sports is in the daily production. Right.
I've told people this all the time, like this is
the Skip Bayliss. Whatever he makes um call and whatever
he makes when he gets reported, like it makes a
lot more sense to those of us in the business
(01:33:26):
because they're on every day as opposed to UH, Bob Costas,
who if you look at his reported salary, it actually
exceeds their salary, and it makes no sense because he's
never on. Like he's got a small little role in
Sunday night football, but how many weeks, how many weekends
(01:33:49):
out of the year? Is that not very many? Value
in value for sports, value for sports television, value for
radio is in consistency and volume of performance. Like we're
all this, We're all about volume. It's hey, restaurants, it's
not about not about uh, serving one customer, It's about
(01:34:12):
how many can you get through? Do you have the
perfect number of tables for the size of your square footage,
for the size of your kitchen? And then how many
of those tables are only filled? But then how many
can you fill? Serve? Get him out, get the next
ones in? You make money in your restaurant based upon
your bart have your bars where the you know, the
(01:34:34):
greatest profit is, and on the the volume of customers
that you serve on a nightly basis. And so and
so when I when I look at the NBA, and
I hear Adam Silver and he says, hey, look, Kevin
Durant leaving Oklahoma City going to Golden State. That only
(01:34:56):
hurt one team, Like that's not true. It hurt the
entire West. Did they run did they get lucky that
that Blake Griffin got hurt? Sure, they didn't face the
Clippers and then Tony Parker was hurt and uh Kawhi
Leonard was hurt. But still they go twelve and oh
in the playoffs. They there are seventy three win team
(01:35:17):
that added an m v P. And he has the
right to do it, but we also have the right
to say, like, that's not great for the health of
the sport, considering the real The real value to the
NBA is in the eight two regular season games and
a bunch of playoff games, and none of them mattered.
A guy who was part of one of the great
eras in the history of basketball, Showtime, who grew up,
(01:35:40):
of course, right down the street Morningside High School, and
then became a broadcaster or a coach three times over
in the NBA, kind of to spend some time with
the Byron Scott joins us on the Doug gott Leap Show. Uh, look,
when when you guys will Showtime Lakers, You guys were great,
But Portland was good, Houston was good. There were other
teams that were at least viable, And I granted, like
(01:36:01):
free agency has been earned by these players. I just
wonder your thoughts on the idea that Kevin Durant leaving
Oklahoma City only heart Oklahoma City. I disagree with that
and think it really hurt the whole league because everybody
is playing for second place in the West. Is that
a fair way to look at it. I think so.
(01:36:21):
I mean, I think it definitely hurt, you know, more
teams in the West than just one. I think that
it just strengthened the Golden State Warriors and who were
already the best team clearly in the Western Conference last year.
So uh, you know it was it was one of
those trickle down effects. You know, he left one team
to strengthened another team and weaken the whole you know,
(01:36:43):
Western Division, uh, Western Conference in the process of doing it. Yeah, listen,
I know you've coached against them. Have you coached kind
against all these guys? And when we first start with
the people are making are starting to make the Lebron
Jordan comparisons. I do think it's interesting that believe out
Magic Johnson, like you guys were incredible. He was incredible
(01:37:04):
from the time he was in the league. And that's
who he plays most like. For a guy who played
with Magic and coached UH and and uh and coached
um in Lebron and I'm just wondering how you would
compare and contrast their games. Well, I mean, when you
I mean, the biggest comparison is obviously they're they're both
(01:37:24):
there their size, uh, and being able to dominate the
game with the ball, not only scoring, but you know,
passing in and running the club. I mean, that's the
biggest comparison. I think they both do play different styles
of basketball. But uh, you're right, as far as you know,
nobody ever mentions Magic when they talk about comparisons with Lebron. Uh.
They Michael mentioned Michael because of his scoring problems. But
(01:37:48):
I think he is more like Magic than he is
Michael when it comes to when you watch all the numbers.
I mean, the guy rebounds, he assists, he gets steals,
you know, rebounds. I mean the only thing that he
does that Magic didn't do was shots, you know. So
I think that's more of the comparison when you look
at the way Lebron plays. But I still I still
think it's unfair to compare him to anybody right now.
(01:38:09):
I think we need to wait for a few more
years when he's all set and done and look at
all the numbers, and then you start making comparison to
some of the great players that played in the past.
You took over covin impossible job to try and help
the rehab of the Lakers. It's really really hard, and
obviously that they let you go. Now Magic's running the team.
What are your emotions about the Lakers, your relationship with
(01:38:32):
the organization, with Magic specifically considering you're not a part
of that organization, even though you're one of the all
time greats and you had to coach when he even
he just didn't have the players to compete. I still
have a serious love for the Los Angeles Laker organization.
I mean I went to I think their final home
game this season, and I saw Jeannie and you know,
(01:38:54):
we gave each other a big hug, and you know,
asked her how she was doing. She asked me the same,
And you know, I saw rob Olinka. I still see
Urban almost once or twice a week at the gym,
and we always talk. So, I mean, just because of
what happened uh to me, you know a few years ago,
doesn't you know, I don't have sour grapes. I just
(01:39:14):
put it that way. I still love the organization. I
still believe Purple and Go. I still want them to
do great. I'm a Luke Walton fan because I've known
Luke since he was in elementary school, so I want
him to do great. So I mean, like, like I said,
it didn't work out the way I planned it. Uh,
And like I said, you know before, and I've said it,
you know, last year and on a few occasions that
(01:39:37):
in Falk, Mitch and Chim. Uh, you know, I wish
them all the best as well. But uh, that that
would never change, you know, I still love that organization.
That's incredible. If Byron Scott joining us here on the
Doug Otlip Show, Fox Sports Radio, you coach Kyrie, Uh,
he was never healthy. He was super young. He didn't
play much even in college because of that health. But
(01:39:57):
but I've I've said, like, look, he I used to
I started kind of the Rod Strickland thing, Like he
has finishing shots that we haven't seen since Rod Strickland.
He's not your traditional point. There's somebody Saiah Thomas to
his game. What are your thoughts on Kyrie now and
how you've seen him evolved since you were his head
coach in Cleveland. Well, I mean when we drafted Kyrie,
(01:40:17):
he was heading shoulders. I thought above everybody else. Uh,
And I think so did Chris Grant. I mean, we
we knew we were getting the elite player. I talked
to Mike Cseski before we drafted him on a couple occasions,
and he convinced me that this kid was gonna be
able to average twenty plus points a game, and he's
you know, and he said, he's ready right now. And
(01:40:39):
at nineteen years old, seeing him in practice and seeing
some of the things he was able to do, I said,
this kid is gonna be a star. And I think
he's you know, lived up to the hype. Uh. You know,
he's the guy taking the big shots. Seems like at
the end of games, even when you have Lebron on
the floor. He has a killer instinct game him and
he has no weaknesses to his game on offensive in
(01:41:00):
I mean, he could post up guys, you know, at
six two six two to six ft six five, and
his handles are sick. Uh, you know, he got a
mid range game long range on me. He just he
really does have all the tools and and I love
watching him play, and I love watching the development of
Kyrie from his rookie year to now. He's a perennial
All Star. So, uh, you know, I've said this in
(01:41:22):
one our means. I said that that the sky's the
limit for this kid. It just depends on how hard
he wants to work to get to where he needs
to get to. Steph Curry is a two time m
v P. He was a unanimous m v P last year.
But whether it was injury fatigue or the fact that
the Calves wore him down because they were going at him,
they were making him guard the ball every as many
possessions as possible, he wasn't what we thought he was
(01:41:46):
or as dominant as we thought he should be in
the finals last year. Which is the real Steph Curry Like,
Is it just this is a higher level of competition
and he's not gonna be as effective against the type
of players the Calves and the Kyrie's the Calves are
thrown out of or was that just a bad series
and we'll see the real staff this year. Well, I
(01:42:07):
think it's a little bit of both. I think, you know,
obviously he probably wasn't from uh from a health standpoint,
but you know, and saying that, I think the Cats
did a great job of being very physical with him,
even when he was on the offensive end. Uh, and
then like you said, when he was on the defensive end,
they made him have to guard people. And you know,
sooner or later in the seven game series, that's gonna
(01:42:29):
wear on you. And I think you know, their plan
is probably gonna be the same this year. Really go
after him, uh, defensively, really be physical and aggressive with
him on when he has the ball or when the
Golden States on the offensive end. Now, Steph Curry probably
feels that, you know, he has a lot to prove.
Most great players feel that coming into a series, especially
last year when they didn't play as well as they expected.
(01:42:50):
So I'm sure he's coming in with a belly, you know,
with a fire in his belly that he's gonna have
to go out there and play like the Steph Curry
who's one two consecutives or two consecutive envy fees. What
are your expectations. Who do you think takes a series?
You know, I mean there are three one last year, uh,
you know, without a Kevin Durant and they lose the series.
(01:43:12):
And I'm looking at Kevin as a guy that you know,
one of the top two or three players in our league.
So you know, as soon as they got him, I
said they were winning championship, and I think they'll win
it this year. And six you got a new book out,
Slam Dunce Slam Dunk Success, Leading from every position on
life's court. I love catching up with you just because,
like it's on some level, and it's not just because
(01:43:32):
you're on with us, Like you're kind of like the
forgotten superstar with the Lakers. Like when you guys went
back to back championships. That was when you average twenty
two a game. You were a dominant player in the league. Uh.
If I pick up this book, or if I pick
it up for you know, if somebody picks it up
for Father's Day, what are they going to learn from it? Well,
they're gonna read some stories in there about my life
(01:43:54):
as far as basketball is concerned. But what they're gonna
learn about is that, you know, in basketball and isn't
there there are a lot of parallels between the two.
Because they're gonna look on the cover and they're gonna
see this little short guy named Charlie Norris on there,
and you know, we we we looked totally opposite alone.
Look like we have a whole lot of things in common.
But you know, when you when you go you know,
(01:44:15):
beneath the surface, you find out that we do have
a lot of things in common. He's a very competitive guy,
and he's very competitive in the business world. And we
also learned that, you know, running a basketball team and
run the business has a lot a lot of things
in common. And then the other thing people are gonna
learn is, you know, especially in the in the day
and time that we're going through right now, don't judge
a book by its cover, you know. I mean, if
(01:44:35):
we would have looked at each other and never really
got to know each other, we wouldn't have what we
have out now, which is a slam dunk success. Uh. So,
hopefully it just really teaches people to ask that second
and third question and really try to get to know
people and forget it and forget about the color of
their skin or if they're tall, or if they're fat,
or if they're short. Uh, forget about all those stereotypes.
(01:44:56):
Just try to find out if this person has something
in common with you that you can get to know
under the surface and hopefully have a great friendship like
Charlie and I have. I have seen you guys there
you guys. I've I've seen you guys at the at
the gym. I haven't bothered you. But that's is that
the short guy, bald guy that you work out with. Yeah,
that's that's funny. That's a that's a real relationship. Byron
(01:45:18):
Scott slam dun success Brian, thanks so much for joining us. Man.
We'll catch up soon any time. Man. All right, that's
Byron Scott stud That was a stud that was the
great three point four people through shot three point shots.
Slim Dunk Successes is the book speaking of inter relation

You know. The weird thing about Twitter is guys will
(01:46:20):
come at you on Twitter misspell your name, but then
spell it correctly in your Twitter handle. I don't understand it. Stuff.
Byron was talking about his book that that he co
authored with a buddy of his who's like five six
Jewish guy, bald, right, like champion of business in l A.
And if you go to, uh, there's an equinox in
(01:46:41):
l A. If you go to there's one specific one
that he always works at it early in the morning.
You'll see them together like Mutton Jeff, Like they're really
kind of buddy. It is kind of the odd couple, right.
And what if I've I've always thought and I look,
I lived through the l A Riots, not necessarily I
didn't live in south central l A. I'm not gonna
pretend that I did it. Um, but I always thought
(01:47:04):
that it was like this was not a Los Angeles
with the exception of you know, during the time of
the l A riots and the Rodney King beatings. Like
I always felt like this is an area that's more
evolved in terms of race. Something happened today with Lebron
James one of his extra houses in Brentwood, which is
a great area that makes you think maybe otherwise. Lebron
(01:47:27):
talked about let's get to the press, the press. Here's
Dan Buyer. What do you got from me? Dan? Yeah?
The l A p D investigating as a racial slur
reportedly was painted on the front gate of one of
the Lebron's homes here in l A. By the time
authorities actually got there, the slur was apparently painted over
by someone, but Lebron responding today, no matter how famous
(01:47:49):
you are, no matter how many people admire you, you know,
being being black in America is it's tough. And we
got a long way to go, you know, for for
us as a society, for us as African Americans, until
we until we feel equal in America. I'll just say
this to to Lebron, um, I'm not disputing that racism exists.
(01:48:13):
And I think that I saw did you see Barclay's
interview with some alt right guy who talked about America,
Is that Anglo saxon Land, like, look, I'm Jewish, so
that would mean I'm out too, by the way, I
just like all of this is vile stuff, and and
we should cover Lebron and whatever was painted. We should, like,
(01:48:35):
we should cover that which we should know it exists,
and we should eradicate that from society. But I don't
know if we should put these people, these all right
nut jobs, on TV and popularize in any way the
things they say, because I can't speak for all white America,
but I can speak for most everybody I know. Disliking
(01:48:56):
somebody because the color of their skin is quite possibly
the dumbesting you have. You have you have officially told
me that you are an idiot. Forget about that you're
a racist, that you're a bad person, You're you have
a black heart, you have a dark soul, like, forget
about all that which is also but just the idea
that you simply don't like somebody because of the color
(01:49:18):
of their skin, Like, think about how dumb that is.
That's how most of us feel about racism. And so
I'm sorry that Lebron's house, but I can tell you
that most of l A would die ten times over
to have Lebron play for the Lakers or Clippers and
has nothing, and we would love to hang out with you.
It has nothing to do with being black or being white.
It just seems like a cat that you'd like to
(01:49:40):
hang with. I don't know, it's it's crazy because it's
like people who smoke, Like you know, thirty million people
still smoke in this country. I don't know anybody in
my life that smokes, who smokes anymore, but people do. Um.
I don't know anybody who's a racist in my life,
but people are. Anyway, there's my racist. What else he
(01:50:01):
got for me? Game one of the NBA Finals tomorrow.
Game two of the Stanley Cup Final is tonight in Pittsburgh,
pends up on the Predators one game tonight, Chargers against
the Predators. Fan on his catfish guy have been dropped,
as the d a's office confirmed Jacob Whatell's actions yes
tossing a catfish onto the ice during the Stanley Cup
Final Game one didn't quote rise to the level of
criminal charge. You think you think? What are you in for?
(01:50:24):
Grand theft? What are you in for? Beat up a
dude nearly nearly killed him? What are you in for?
I I throw a catfish on the ice at the
Stanley Cup Finals Game one. It was that was pretty
pretty like this is the dumbest thing ever. I guess.
The only question is I heard this on Clay Traviss show.
Is what was Pittsburgh pt right to announce this before
(01:50:45):
game two? So that now some yea who from at
Nashville who cares if the guy throws the cat fish
in the ice, Like I it's kind of funny, and
now people watch hockey who didn't care about hockey. It's
much like the baseball fight that this week with Bryce Harper,
Like now you're gonna be watching game two just to
see that, ah, the catfish, the catfish? Anyway, go ahead, Yeah,
that Bryce Harper suspension trimm from four to three today.
(01:51:06):
Um from that confrontation on Monday, we touched on the
just a little bit earlier. Michael Morris placed on the
disabled list because he collided with Jeff Somarja during that fight.
So Morse has a concussion and now on the d
L for the San Francis Margin. Football margin, football guy,
you know, football guy from Notre Dame puts a hurting
on his own teammate. That is the ultimate Keystone Cops.
(01:51:27):
How about this from some broadcasting news. Mike Arrico will
be the voice of Thursday Night Football on NBC when
the games moved there starting on November nine. Al Michael's
just doing the Sunday Night game with Chris Collinsworth. Lee
Corso assigned a contract extension to remain on College Game
Day on ESPN, and John Clayton's contract not renewed. Huh,
that is correct, That is correct. I don't understand if
(01:51:48):
you're gonna not if you're not gonna not gonna keep
John Clayton, why are you gonna keep leek Corso? Like
the problem is, like this is I'll let you in
on a little secret of the ESPN thing. It's all
about if you have a like there's like four people
run the place. If one of those four guys is
your guy, then you're forever. You're good there right now.
And Clayton doesn't have one of those guys as his guy,
(01:52:10):
and unfortunately he's out. As for the Tarrico thing, I
worked with Tarriko. He's probably the smartest human being I've
ever worked with. And he's he doesn't have a classic
play by play voice like Al Michael's is like goat
play by play, but he's I think Tarriko is an
incredible play by play guy who has learned and his
voice is better. And this is just a negotiation in
(01:52:31):
the NFL where they flipped out because they wanted to
hand pick, you know, the play by play guy. Good
for NBC for getting him in that spot. That's why
they hired him. He deserves it. He's tremendous And I like,
he's just one of these guys that is a savant
in terms of his ability to assimilate knowledge on different sports,
even if you haveson covered him. And I think, and
(01:52:51):
I think Thursday Night Football will be better because of it.
And you know, like, look, I know that doing the
Thursday night games has worn down Jim Nance and made
his life more difficult. It wouldn't shock me to see
at some point CBS try and do the same thing
and put one of their you know, an eye and
eagle who is as good as anybody who does it
on Thursday Night Football. Let's wrap it up with this
(01:53:13):
to Kuba Saddle the getting all those spoils after he
drank the milk on Sunday, got to go to Cowboys
camp Todays as they had O t s and then
in a conversation with Dez Bryant, Cowboys wide receiver said
the fastest he ever went in his car hundred and
eighty miles per hour in his Bentley. That from Dez Bryant.
I've gone a hundred sixty miles an hour in a car. Really, Yeah,
(01:53:34):
Camaro is my first car on a track or on
as Franks was not smart. I think it was under
six Yeah, think was yeah. Yeah, it was as fast
as you could like it was pedal to the metal.
See seventy one engine. Really dumb. Three guys in the car,
really really dumb. But it's fast. It's fast, and that's
the press. Get out there and pressed. That was the press.
(01:53:57):
I can make the case to you and I will
up coming next at Roger Dale is actually a better
commissioner than Adam Silver. I'll share that with you next.
This is the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio.
With True Car, you can find out what other people
in your area paid for the same car you're looking for,
new or used. Is a True Car to enjoy more
confident car buying experience. Doug gotli Show, Fox Sports Radio.
(01:54:23):
I was like, look, I like a little uh, I like,
I like guys Cube just like anybody else. But I
want to get in there. So here here's my thoughts
on Adam Silver was on with Colin Cowherd earlier today,
and um, Adam Silver has has clearly made himself into
a pro player commissioner and that is super popular on Twitter.
(01:54:44):
That is super popular and so other forms of social media.
And the NBA has been about the players, and the
NBA you like to say, like, well, it's a player
run league like never really, don't get me wrong. It's
built upon the player's personality. Um, but it's a it's
a combination of these vivid personalities that we have and
(01:55:08):
um uh, this this vivid personality that we have a
group of personalize and a great sport that's watchable, tangible.
People relate to it because they all played it. I
want to still play it. Plus it's in major cities.
It's a city game. Um, it's well televised, but there's
(01:55:29):
also a volume of the games. So when I hear
I hear Adam Silver say that, Hey, Kevin Durant leaving
only hurt one team, the Oakland City Thunder, like that's
OBTUSI it hurt his entire league. It only helped one team.
It hurt twenty nine other teams. Now again, I have
(01:55:56):
I never said that he Durant couldn't do it, and
it wasn't crazy that he did do it because he
told us it's a basketball decision and as a basketball player,
you want to play with better players that share the ball,
you can have more space to operate, and live in
an incredible city. These are great options. He did it
so far been successful. We'll see what happens in the finals.
(01:56:19):
The difference is Adam Silver, the things that he said,
the things that he's done, have been pro player and
have not been pro league. The fact that he hasn't
taken the bull by the horns and demanded that players
play more games hurts his relationship with his vendors, uh
with the arenas, with the teams, how most importantly, with
(01:56:41):
the rights holders who that's what keeps the lights on.
So you factor in the fact that that there is
no parody in the league and you have some of
the best players taking more days off then they have
taken previously, and you have a disappointing product. Even though
the players who play in the league are better than
they've ever been. Goodell. Meanwhile, I can't tell you that
(01:57:05):
the players are better than they've ever been. But the
fact is that he continues to push the boundaries financially,
more games overseas, two teams in l a team in Vegas.
That all generates more revenue. And though the ratings were
slightly down, a lot of that selection related. They spiked
back up in the playoffs in the Super Bowl, and
(01:57:27):
they'll continue to do so. Godell's not liked, but he's
respected because he's a better commissioner than the very eminently
incredibly relatable, likable Adam Silver. What's your job? Make more money,
get more people to watch for longer periods of time.
Goodell is better than Silver. This is the doug otlip Show.
