Speaker 1 (00:00):
Boom, What Off America. Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio,
coming to you from the City of Angels Where. Hey,
it's the last weekend. You have the last one. Last weekend,
you got to do stuff for your wife, your girlfriend.
For your wife and your girlfriend. That's because next weekend football,
real football is on TV. Welcome in, got a ton
(00:22):
to talk to you about. Gotta gotta gott a litany
of quality guests for you this afternoon. Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio. Um, look what I'm about to do
for the next ten minutes. What I'm about to do
for the next ten minutes is something to which I'm
actually going to contradict myself while I'm doing it. I'm
(00:44):
gonna contradict myself because what I'm going to tell you
is that we should not be talking about what I'm
going to be talking about. It's a really hard thing.
It's like, you know, you're like when your dad, my dad,
for example, we we never we weren't allowed to curse
in my house. You guys lead a curse. I don't
don't know when you get to the when is the
coming of age to which you could actually not necessarily
(01:05):
drop an F bomb, but like there wasn't there wasn't
anything that was Like, we weren't allowed to say suck
in my household. And yet when my dad's language was
not always perfect, I never hear him dropping F bomb.
Maybe an S bomb once in a while, like when
things went bad. But like my dad would he was
we weren't allowed to watch R rated movies, we couldn't
(01:27):
use bad language, and yet on a beautiful Saturday afternoon
he would kick us out of the house and watch
a Richard Prior tape. It seemed like a contradiction to me,
and so I'm going to directly contradict myself when I
talk about LaVar Ball, right. But what I'm going to
do is we are going to have a moratorium on
(01:48):
the name LaVar Ball from this point forward. Not from
this exact moment, because that would be impossible to do
a radio segment about LaVar Ball. But I'm saying from
this from this day forward, here's what we're going to do. Nothing,
because that's the only way this stops. I'm a basketball
(02:12):
guy at heart. Look, when you do national radio, you
cover football, unlike other shows. We're gonna go I've been
told we're going to Rams camp. We're going to Cowboys camp.
We're going to Chargers camp. We had Philip Rivers on yesterday.
We'll have a litany of NFL stars. This becomes a
football show for the most part during football season. But
the core of how I grew up as an athlete
that played football growing up, soccer, baseball, a little bit
(02:35):
of tennis competitively for a couple of years. I was
a basketball player, and a good one in high school
and a good one in college. And I played basketball professional.
And so when I see the portrayal of youth basketball
as hey LaVar Ball and his big Baller brand, that's
what all a youth basketball, what all summer basketball is about,
(02:58):
it makes me sick to my stomach. But we're doing
it again. We're doing the exact same thing we did
last year with Donald Trump, the exact same thing. The
crazier it gets the more we cover it, even if
it makes no sense to cover it, and the more
you cover it, for some reason, it empowers people for
(03:18):
some reason. Like one of the things I've always not
understood about about the mainstream public about and we talked
about this earlier this week, that the average i Q
is just as close to eight as it is the
one right. Anytime you think there's smart people understand there's
an equally dumb person out there to kind of even
out the scales and so well, I'd like to think
(03:38):
most of us aren't breathing through our mouths. Most of
us understand this is just a ruse in order to
get more people to pay attention. I also understand that
not all of us seem to be in on it,
and some people look at TV and think, just because
you're on TV, you're somehow more important. Stop it. ESPN,
stop it, Fox Sports one, stop it. Any of you
(04:00):
te tweeting about it. Stop it. He's an idiot. He
is a bad look he is. He is a bad
parent for LaMelo. Now what you're gonna say is, wait
a second. Last week, Doug, I heard you on with
on Colin Cowherd say he was he actually was kind
of the perfect parent for a Lonzo Ball. He was.
(04:21):
But if you raise kids, you understand what I'm telling
you is factual. Every kid is different, every kid has
to be parented different, and if you parent every kid
the same, the reaction is not going to be the same.
I know I have twins, fraternal twins, same home, same age.
They are completely different. They look different, they act different.
You have to parent them different because you parent them
(04:42):
the same. Their reactions are gonna be different. He's going
to ruin LaMelo ball. He's going to ruin him the
same things that we think he did with. First of all,
we're not actually in the same time period when he
coached a Lonzo Ball. His personality wasn't as big, his
name wasn't as big. Okay, he this is the metamorphosis.
(05:04):
This is this is the uh this is now he
is a caricature instead of a character. And what he
helped build with a Lonzo Ball worked because a Lonzo's personality,
a Lonzo style of basketball didn't seem to be affected
and Alonzo could decipher the good through all the gook.
(05:28):
But now he's different, LaMelo is different, and how we
view them and how much we view them as different.
I bring this up because you go back to yesterday
and we were discussing how eighty thousand people watched uh
an a U game between LaMelo and a kid names
Zion Williamson, and a lot of it, by my estimation,
(05:49):
was more we'd heard about Zion Williamson Kiss at left
hand is six ft five wing from South Carolina that
we've heard a lot about and people could watch it,
and it was a slow news night. It was on
a Thursday night in the summer. Football is not on TV.
Baseball's gonna. I mean, we're basically left to talking about
will Colin Kaepernick sign a deal to be a backup quarterback?
(06:13):
Or will Kyrie Irving be traded for next year? Like that,
that's like, that's the best we can do in sports radio.
We are at the we've almost made it to the
dog days of summer, but instead we've been interrupted by
a U basketball. This stuff has been going on for years,
not his stuff, but the big games in the showcase
games and players we haven't seen in big crowds and
(06:36):
college coaches and shoe companies fighting over players. We've seen
all of that. Dude, what I saw today was embarrassing.
I have no relation to. I don't have anything to
do with. I've interviewed him a couple of times, LaVar Ball.
I was embarrassed for the sport that I love. He's
(06:57):
coaching a game in Las Vegas this morning. This is
after last week taking his team off the floor when
he thought the officiating wasn't good. This is after two
nights ago, getting his team run out of the building
and him leaving the game because he got a technical foul.
He didn't like the officiating, so he left. Going back
two nights ago, he did not coach the game and
(07:18):
its entirety. So this morning he gets it. He stops
the game mid game and protests and wants a female official.
Remember the way they've gotten actually better officials nowaday you
games than when I was playing. Is they have these
officiating camps, so high school and low and college officials,
(07:39):
junior college officials. They go there, they pay money and
they work on their craft, they get graded out, they
get evaluate It's just like a basketball camp, only for officials.
So it's actually usually decent officials. He ends up they
end up switching an official because, uh, he accosted a
female ref. Now I don't know if it's because she's female.
(08:01):
He did say that she needs to stay in the lane,
which is the same line he used with with Christine
Leahy when he was on Fox Sports One. Take a
listen to LaVar Ball after the game. Why do you
say she's a bendet against you. She gotta bendetta because
she's she's a woman of trying to act. I get
that she's trying to break it to the referee and thing,
but just giving text and calling fouls. That's no way
(08:23):
to do it. I know what she's trying to say.
I gave the fire, I came a tech, I'm strong.
That ain't got nothing to do with it. Just call
the game. If you're gonna be qualified, you better be
in shape and you better know the game. And she's
bad on volta. She not in shape, She not calling
the game right, and she don't understand. So now trying
to make a name for herself. So she's walking around
like you know, I'm the only woman in here. Yeah,
(08:45):
we get it. I don't care if you're a woman
on man or whatever. Just be good at what you do.
Don't try to step in the lane. She needs to
stay in the lane because she ain't ready for this.
Coach the little kids first, and then come up because
she ain't did enough. She ain't got enough from the resume.
I could tell all right, Look, Lavard is not a
good basketball coach. I can tell you because I've watched
his teams play. They don't play good basketball. They don't
play defense, they don't take good shots. And that's why
(09:08):
when he doesn't have Alonzo Ball, who was the first
team All American and a second pick of the draft,
they are not winning tournaments like they used to win
win tournament. He's not a good coach. But regardless of which,
if she isn't in shape, which I didn't see the game,
she didn't look like she was badly out of shape,
but she wasn't in position. She's at a referee camp,
they will grade her as such. When you have a
(09:30):
female official, do you run into the possibility that she
feels like she has to kind of show up because
he's female. Sure? Sure, um, but there's a look. He's
made a name for himself. Now we would all agree
by that. And so what he obviously doesn't understand, or
maybe he doesn't care to understand, is that because we're
(09:54):
now paying attention, there's a greater expectation of him. Myron
Metcalf wrote the biggest cree piece of crap piece I've
ever read at ESPN dot com. He should be embarrassed. Oh,
these kids love him because he's funny and he just
says crazy things, and people don't understand. We exactly understand
exactly what he is. He's trying to create a brand
(10:15):
for himself by saying and doing crazy things to which
now that we're paying attention, he can actually do a
lot of good. No, he was a bad player Washington Stad.
He transferred to l A. I think cal State l
A average like twenty two a game in Division two basketball,
played some football, um and he's raised three sons that
(10:36):
will all play Division one basketball. One's the second round pick,
second second overall pick of the l A Lakers. Al Right,
so there's not all bad within this guy, but we're
acting as if what worked for a Lonzo is what
he's doing and that it's going to have the same
effect on LaMelo. So here's the thing. I implore all
of my media brethren. Turn off the cameras. It's the
(10:57):
only way it'll stop. It was the only thing that
would have stopped Trump. It's the only thing that will
stop this. It's the only thing that stops people. What
empowers them is the camera. You're you're giving them a platform.
You're giving this guy a platform. I'm giving him a
platform for fifteen minutes, which I shouldn't, but I am
just because I have to say. This turn off the terra.
(11:19):
It's bad for sport. It makes anybody who watch it say,
this is what summer basketball is about. This is what
I guess. Well, if it worked for Lamar, it's gonna
work for me. No, if you just don't cover it,
he'll go away. We've had crazy people, crazy people in
a U basketball before. But this guy's empowered because his
(11:42):
son's good, not him, and because we keep putting a
camera on him and following him around and invite him
to interviews and interviewing after him, like, dude, you take
your team like a full disclosure. Like my dad was
a former college coach. He pulled us. I've been pulled
off the floor before once before in my lifetime. It
was I felt like it was the stupidest thing ever,
(12:04):
all right, And I know he had had he would
walk off and there were times which he thought the
ref was out to get him. But when there's a
TV camera, they are in a docuseries and people are
paying attention to game and everyone knows LaVar ball, Like now,
all of a a sudden, there's greater expectations for you as
a human being. He could actually do a ton of
good for the sport, for his kids that he's coaching, UH,
for the perception of a U basketball, all these things,
(12:26):
but instead he's doing the opposite of it, and we
just keep feeding the monster. We just keep feeding the monster.
I'm like, I don't know, this is crazy. I can't
believe he keeps doing that. Keep the film, keep keep
the camera on him, though he might do something crazy.
What we do, it's awful. It has to stop. And
(12:48):
the only way it stops is if we all go collectively.
We all agree a ESPN, you can stop talking about him.
Just don't tweet about him, don't talk about him, don't
film him, don't look at him, don't do anything. Hey,
Fox Sports one, we're gonna stop. Stop doing this. Stop
doing it, Bleach reports, CBS. Just pretend like he doesn't exist,
(13:08):
because that is the source of his power. He has
no other power if you take away those platforms, can't
buy ads. Okay, his his his brand, There is no brand,
There is no shoe. Even his own son doesn't wear
the shoes, and yet we keep covering it as if
(13:32):
he's Michael Jordan's and this is Nike. We keep feeding
this monster. This is an US problem. Not a lo
oar problem. And so this will mark the last time
I mentioned his name until further notice, and I apologize
for doing so, but I'm telling you it's what kills it.
It's that's the that's the source, right, that's the source.
(14:01):
All right? Up coming next, um, you're in the Doug
Gotlip Show. Stewart Mandel is gonna join us. He's the
editor in chief of a new website. Got to get
his thoughts on what are realistic expectations for a kid
like Sam Donald didn't start the whole season last year,
now all of a sudden to be figured. Can we
(14:21):
figure him out? We'll discuss next in the Doug Gotlip Show.

(14:43):
new site called the All American. Stewart Mandel joins us
in the Doug Gottlieb Show. He's the editor in chief.
We're getting ready for college football. We're still a couple
of weeks away from college football kicking off. This is
the last weekend you won't have any football on your television.
Right next weekend we got the Hall of Fame game,
which is not really a game, but still a like,
oh yeah, football is back, he joins us here on
the Doug Gottlieb Show. Um, nick Saban offered up a
(15:06):
solution steward to UH to college football's problems, and he said, like, look,
we should just only play Power six schools. Um, we
shouldn't worry about records that would expand the playoffs. Uh.
It's like one of those things that almost feels like
he's pandering. But UM, I don't know if nick Saban
does pander, is it something that is even approachable based
(15:30):
upon contracts and the financial details of of some of
those terrible games, the Nickels State games, which make both
schools and the and the college towns a ton of money. Well, Doug,
nick Saban's been pushing we should only play Power five
schools for a few years now. What I noticed was
different in these comments this week, with him pushing the
idea of expanding the playoff. That's not something I've heard
(15:52):
from him. Before, and frankly was a little surprising given
he's been through this four team playoff a few for
three or straight years, and you know, would seem to
have better insight than almost anybody on whether that's feasible
for his players. Now, in terms of schedule, you know,
the problem is Alabama is scheduling to try to win
a national championship. Board of States doing that many other schools,
(16:13):
but Kansas is scheduling to get six wins. And some
schools needs a good team of opponents to come into
town to filp their stadium. Some schools are gonna filp
their stadium whoever the opponent is. So everybody's got different
scheduling priorities. I don't think in college football it's really
feasible to get everybody in the country, all a hundred
thirty schools or even in the power of five sixties
(16:35):
six schools to schedule the same way. I would agree
with you. And and the idea of expanding the playoff
is great, except you know that that means that what
are you gonna do. You're gonna limit these these championship
championship games. Okay, Well, in addition to the fact that
they make a lot of money. They also kind of
sort of balance out the unbalanced schedules of these bloated conferences.
(16:55):
So if you're gonna just add more playoff games, you're
gonna add too many. Geld end up having six team
games for the team that wins national championship. That's just
too many. Just too many, is too too much of
a beating on players. Yeah, And with the increased awareness
of the dangers of football and the importance of players safety,
I just don't think in this day and age, you
can expand the season without taking something away, whether that's
(17:18):
going back to eleven regular season games, are taking away
to conference championships. You know, there's just there's no sentiment
within the people in the sport to make the season longer.
And that's why I said it a little surprise about
Steven taking the eight team stance, because he's seen it
first hand. He's seen his team go through the grind
of the extra two games the past couple of years,
and maybe he thought and thinks it's not that big
(17:40):
a deal. I don't know. I mean I heard the
exact opposite from Urban Meyer when they won the national championship.
He he was resting players the following spring because they
were still so worn out from the fifteen game schedule.
The only thing I can think of Sewart Seuermandel joining
us the new site is the All American. He's the
editor in chief. He joins us in the Doug Gotlip Show,
Fox Sports Radio. The only thing I can think of
(18:02):
is maybe he believes that a war of attrition would
ultimately always be won by Alabama because they have a greater,
greater depth of talent. Like that's the only thing. And
I would like to think that he's thinking greater good
and this is just his honest thoughts. But let's be honest.
All these guys speak from what what benefits me the most,
and I think that's maybe that's why he thinks it
(18:22):
would benefit him the most. I also think that Nick
Saban knows that at some point, maybe as soon as
this year, his team is going to go ten and
two instead of eleven and one, and he wanted me
to still be able to play in the National Championship.
He has, uh you know, if you remember, they went
to the Sugar Bowl a few years ago and lost
to Oklahoma, and he took a lot of heat afterward
for saying that, well, our players treated it as a
(18:43):
consolation game. I think he has flipped the switch from
you know, somebody who who grew up on and coached
for a long time in the bowl system to somebody
who is basically at a place that is solely concerned
about winning the playoff. And if if this happens to
be the year that they have a down year and
missed the playoff and go to the Capital One Bowl,
their fans aren't gonna care. So but again, that's a
(19:04):
totally different set of priorities than Northwestern, Perdue, Illinois, Uh,
Kansas State, any number of schools that just they would
be thrilled to go to a January one, but non
playoff bowl, and uh, you know they're they're gonna schedule accordingly. Um.
The it does take us away from something that I
think is going to be a question once they actually
(19:25):
play football. You know, they open up with Florida State,
super talented young squad, But um, who's his quarterback? Oh,
I think he's pretty solid on Blake Sims. Now you know,
he has a true freshman there who had a phenomenal
spring game. And because Blake Sims was kind I keep
saying Blake Sims don't Jalen Hurts. Blake Sims was a
couple of years ago. But athletic athletic quarterback who runs
(19:49):
it better than he throws it that Jalen Hurts like,
there's some Blake Sims to him. M jale Hurts I
think has it on Blake Sims in terms of the
running ability. But yes, Jalen Hurts is coming off a
rough let's try I was trying to ste what I
was trying to try to help. Yeah, thank you. He's
from only on a national radio show as a national
college football expert. Uh, Jalen Hurts has got the job.
(20:09):
The true freshman came in and played very well in
the spring game and got people a lot of people's
hopes up. But he's not gonna let there be a
quarterback controversy. Now. If Jalen Hurst comes out in his
nine of twenty seven against Florida State, then he's going
to have a quarterback controversy. There's no question about that.
But Jalen Hurts gets first dibbs. I know he wasn't
the main reason or the only reason that they won
(20:30):
their first fourteen games last season, but it's still something
for a true freshman quarterback to get to the national
championship game and obviously get within one second of winning
the national championship. I think you'll I think we'll actually
know in the very very rarely do I say you'll
know in that first game, But because there should be
such a massive jump in his passing ability from year
(20:51):
one to year two, because of the volume of reps
that he had last year preseason, regular season, this year
in the spring, and obviously in in the summer, in
the fall, I think you'll know really early on whether
or not they have the guy, because that's really the
flaw there right when they played against when he had
to beat Pete teams with his arms, hit my arm,
he simply couldn't do it. He wasn't accurate enough, which
which brings me to there there's a possible parallel. Granted,
(21:14):
Jalen Hurts far more successful than it was Max Brown
who got to start for USC to start the year.
Last year, Sam Donald took the college football world by storm.
Of course, last we saw him, he won the Rose Bowl.
Now he's a favorite to win the Highsman Trophy. By
your estimation, is he as good as the hype would
lead you to believe? Yeah, I mean, I think he's
(21:36):
the real deal. He's he's in the latest and online
of great UH pro style quarterbacks at USC. I think
the challenge for him this year is he loses Jujuice, Smith, Schuster,
Darius Rogers, you know, the receivers that were such a
big part of his success last season. He's got to
build chemistry with mostly an entirely new set of receivers.
(21:59):
I saw him in the ring, and there's certainly a
lot of promising guys out there, especially among their red
shirt freshman but you never know, you never know if
you'll be able to replicate that with a new group.
Also some new offensive lineman as well. But in terms
of his pure talent, there's a reason he's garnering the
buzz that he has us as even a possible number
one pick next year. Um now, it's just a matter
(22:20):
of whether he can deliver when the expectations are that high.
Whereas last year he took over a team that had
already been ridden off and led them, obviously to the
Rose Bowl. Lincoln Riley takes over to Oklahoma. It happened
in kind of strange fashion and caught a lot of people,
myself included by Storm, but of course he inherits Baker Mayfield,
who he's coached as offensive coordinator for the last two seasons.
(22:43):
What's the likelihood of a drop off because of the
coaching change. Yeah, I mean, it's certainly possible these guys
the first time head coach um taking over. To me,
the most awkward part of the dynamic is that Mike
Stoops is still there's defensive coordinator. I don't think there
was ever a realistic chance he's gon takeovers head coach
after his time at Arizona. But but nonetheless, um, you
(23:04):
just gotta hope that the respect factor is there. But
you know, year one probably won't be a true gauge
one way or the other. I mean, if they have
a drop off, that'll be the reason. Listed. If they
go it's eleven and one and then win the Big
twelve and go to the playoffs and Baker Mayfield wins
the Heisman, that'll be a great, great debut. But then
everybody's gonna say, okay, can you do it without Baker Mayfield.
(23:27):
So you know, give Lincoln Riley a couple of years,
maybe even two or three years to really know how
he's gonna do. But it is tough. It was usually
a tough adjustment for any first year head coach. And
he's walking into a situation where the expectations could not
be higher. No any loss his two star running backs
from last year, and and uh, you know a second
game is on the road in the Horseshoe at Ohio State.
(23:49):
They have to go to Oklahoma State this year. Uh
team that that Bob stoops for the most part, dominated
obviously in state. Uh that that's a that's a that's
become a very very big game. They may have to
beat them twice to win the Big twelve. Stuart Mandel
joining us on the on the Doug Gottlieb Show, Give
me the name of the team that we're going to
be talking about in December that we haven't you know,
(24:10):
the national hosts like myself. You know, we we spit
out Ohio State, we spit out the big boys to
Florida States, the Alabama's, the usc s, the Oklahoma's of
the world. Who's the team we're gonna be talking about
then that we're not talking about now? Well, in the
Pact twelve in particular, everybody's talking in Washington, USC and
forgetting that Stanford is still there and one ten games
(24:31):
last year very quietly and is a contender every year
under David Shaw, and I think they're gonna be tremendous
on defense, especially in their secondary Uh Keller Chris towards
a c L in the Sun Bowl. From every all
indications are he's back and ready to go. So I
think people are gonna overlook them because they lost McCaffrey
and Solomon Thomas, who are great players. But that program
(24:54):
has already proven again and again that it can reload
and it wouldn't surprise me at all if they end up. Uh,
if we livere in come December. And oh, by the way,
Stanford won the fact well, not USC or Washington. Uh.
The you're the editor in chief of The All American.
How is it going to differentiate yourself from anything else? Well,
The All American is a subscriber site that's gonna launch
(25:16):
August um by a company called The Athletic and to
differentiate itself and make make it worth it for people
to pay money, we have to cover college football differently
than any other site, and we're going to take advantage
of our relationships. This is a group of writers who
have you know, spent many years covering the sport and
built up relationships to give people exclusive access and behind
(25:36):
the scenes looks at college football. Uh, we've got the
best experts in the sport to give you analysis. And
then we want to emphasize some areas that we feel
our overlooked or undercovered by other sites, most notably advanced stats, analytics,
film study. Um, you know, things that some people are
starting to get into but haven't really emphasized enough. Will
(25:57):
be a big focal point of the All Americans great stuff.
Look forward to seeing the site. Look forward to hopefully
get in the code where I don't have to pay
for it, and we'll we'll talk you up with the
next discount code. Yes, discount codes, discount codes anohing like
that we are the cheapest. We are the cheapest form
of people US US in the media. I'd love to
(26:17):
have what's the what's the cheap code? Stewart Mendel's doing
great stuff, dude, can't wait for a college football season
to kick off. Thanks for joining us, All right, pleasures mind,
yesterday I told you that the Ravens were Colin Kaepernick's
last best chance to get back in the NFL. They passed.
They passed, So where does Cap go from here and
why why is he frankly still out of a job.
(26:40):
I'll offer up an idea first, Let's find out what's trending.
Doug Gottlie Show, Fox Sports Radio. So yesterday I told
you that Colin Kaepernick had one great last chance, great
last chance, UH to sign this year in the NFL.
It doesn't mean that he he's not going to sign
(27:01):
in the NFL, but this was a great opportunity. Joe
Flacco has got a bad back. They're saying now he
might only miss a week, potential to miss up to
six weeks. The Ravens are coached by John Harbaugh, John
Harbor brother Jim Harbaugh. Jim Harbaugh is the one who
coached on Kaepernick in San Francisco, and of course Greg
Romans on their offensive staff. He was the offensive coordinator
(27:21):
for the Niners when he played for the Niners. And
I was like, there's a ray, there's a rabbi in
the room. There's a guy who knows the guy, like
I can swear on the guy because I saw the guy.
The guy played for me. Should be pointed out that
Greg Roman was in fact a rabbi in the room,
just not for Colin Kaepernick. David Olsen. They might know
David Olsen is David Olsen was a backup, did play
(27:45):
some little bit at Stanford when Greg Roman was there.
Was signed yesterday as kind of a filler arm right,
because look this, it does show that Flacco is back.
They don't think it's all that bad. And there's a
very good chance that Colin Kaepernick is just overqualified for
(28:06):
the position, right, Like we just need somebody to come
in and throw out routes to our guys while Flacco
is nursing a bad back. We don't need somebody to
come in here and truly compete for a starting job.
And Olsen, Um, I'm sure Greg Roman can swear by like, yeah,
you can throw that ou route, right, he knows the offense,
he knows my verbiage. He's fine. Doesn't cost us anything.
(28:26):
We give him fifty grand and some gear, and he'll
be like super super happy, super happy. Where's Colin Kaepernick is? Like, dude,
I don't get it. I don't get out of bed
for fifty grand. Right, that's he's a former starter in
the NFL. Here's Mike Florio earlier today. Mike Flora from
Pro Football Talk earlier today on the Dan Patrick Show,
talking about Kaepernick, Colin Kaepernick, the possibility with the Ravens,
(28:48):
who is what now of latching on zero a guy
nobody ever heard of, from a team nobody ever heard
of in the league, nobody ever heard of. But it's
a camp arm, I mean, and that's been the that'll
be the excuse for the next month. We're signing camp
arms and calling Kaepernick is in a camp arm. Yeah,
I mean, like, look, um, what Florio is saying is
(29:10):
if they're gonna sign David Olsen, then they're not gonna
Then it only shows kind of what I said yesterday.
But then he always backtracks and says, what we're gonna
here is the camp arm. Camp armer is the guy
just throws you out. You can just throw out, make
all the throws, stay out of the way, stay out
of the headlines. Gonna get cut once Flacco gets back,
once he started to cut down the roster and understands it,
like he's not gonna guy coming in town, Like all right,
(29:32):
David Olsen's in the house. Huh huh. Are you guys
gonna ask me what number? I want? Okay, uh, just
make sure I know, I don't pick the retired numbers,
and I gotta buy a big like he's that guy
is staying in an extended stay hotel. He's not. He's
not even thinking about renting or leasing a home, let
alone buying a home. He's in on the deal. And
(29:52):
Kaepernick is probably overqualified. But the one question you ask
yourself if your Kaepernick is do you hake one of
these camp armed gigs? I just want to. I just
want to get into a camp and throw footballs, right, Like,
at some point you have to was the was it?
Tlc ain't too proud to beg? That's tlc ain't too
(30:15):
bad to BEG. Right, at some point you gotta be
ain't too proud to BEG. I am a starting quarterback,
not if anyone. No one's willing to give you a
chance to be a starting quarterback. Like I've often thought, Ramos,
I don't know if you ever been this point in
your career where you're like, man, what happens If what
happens with the Doug Gotlip Show goes away, well, then
Doug Gollips gotta find a different route to make sure
(30:36):
that the bills are paid. Right. They gotta find someplace
else to do it, someplace else do But but if
all that, like, look, I told you I'm running out
of networks, right, So so then it's like would you
would you do local radio like I've done national radio.
I like it a little bit better than local radio.
And I don't want to talk about, you know, the
backup shortstop and whether or not he deserves some at
(30:58):
bats and but you know, again, beggars can't be choosers, dude, right,
And so whether or not this idea that Colin Kaepernick
is somehow being done wrong, it's possible, possible, But like
at some point, you gotta not be too proud to
beg you gotta be able to kind of just take
(31:20):
an opportunity. And people are in the workforce understand this
a lot better than football players do or maybe even
then media reports mean, like look, Stewart Mandel used to
be a talented writer, right, Like, so what all these
guys are doing with websites? Fox Sports, dot comference Exampen
went all digital. So if you're a writer, like, okay,
(31:43):
well all digital that means no writing. I gotta find
a different place to write. So you either take a
job for far less money than you were going to take,
or you do what he just said he's doing starting
a website which is paid content, and I'm sure there'll
be some sort of revenue share among the guys who
are giving the content, kind of cutting out the middleman
(32:05):
of the big name brand, Fox Sports dot Com, CBS
Sports dot Com, Bleach Report, cetera, et cetera, etcetera. Right,
but you gotta figure out how to get an give
yourself every opportunity to be seen. And while it's it's fair,
Colin Kaepernick is not, and probably should not be a
cap arm, a camp arm. If that's the only job available,
(32:27):
maybe you take the job as a camp arm. Hey
do I just want to come in and throw footballs
and be a part of a team. You guysn't cut
me and cut me. But he's not to the point
where it's too proud to beg a ride mount through
five interceptions yesterday. He's the backup quarterback for the Ravens.
Maybe Kaepernick is just gonna hold out and wait, like now,
you guys canna roll right, That's cool, I'm still good here.
(32:48):
Rumor has it David Price is afraid to pitch at Fenway.
Real news or fake News. I'll tell you next when
you're ready to experience a better way to sell or
trade in your car, check out true car dot com.
I'm slash trade and check it out today. Doug Gottlib Show,
Fox Sports Radio, John Ennis joining us next hour? Is
(33:10):
any John Ennek of course, host coveragehn FS one of
UFC two fourteen. I'm going to be there in person.
I gotta ask annek. Um, I know I'm gonna have
to wear an Afliction shirt? Uh? Should I go smaller
medium or orge medium in order to sit up there
sitting close front row? Like? Right? So I'm a ticket snob,
and um, this is gonna excuw me. Uh to continue
(33:33):
to be a ticket snob even for you. Never been
to an m M A fight ever and my first
time going. It's gonna see be Daniel Cormier. I went
to college with him in Oklahoma State and watch him
go against John Bones Jones. But also I'll be sitting
so close that if there's blood that's splatters, it will
splatter on me. I'm kind of fired up, not the
blood part, just the proximity part. Let's reach into my sack,
(33:56):
shall we? Let's reach into godly sack we welcome in
Dan Buyer, who you'll here on the weekend here on
Fox Sports Radio when the hardest working men with John
Ramos in radio fired what he got for me? Well,
it's interesting you mentioned Ramos because blood split it all
over him when his youth soccer team went on ten
because they were getting annihiliated match. Ralmos fired up for
(34:18):
this year's team. He said he was. He was telling
me his eight you team, his four teen you team.
That there he's been put him through drills, he's taken
away to boot camp. He's take him somewhere in West Texas.
They might not quit the junction girls there there is
Let's see what we've gotten. Gottlieb Sack today. Real news
(34:38):
fake news, Alright, real news are fake news. The Boston
Red Sox, Doug real news are fake news. Place picture
David Price on the ten day d L because of
a foe arm issue. Uh, I'm gonna say it's fake news.
Wasn't an elbow issue. Yes, it is fake news. That
is correct. It was my issue with that. That is
fake news. Yes, that is correct. So he has in
(35:01):
addition to thin skin he's got, he's got too bad elbow.
That roughed up in his last start with the UH
with the Red Sox. Gave up by belief six runs
a week ago against the Angels. Now gonna be on
the ten d d L. If you give away a
bunch of runs against the Angels, you should automatically go
in the d L. And I'm an Angel fan. You
should actually either be demoted or he's gotta be said.
(35:23):
That's one of those things, like, all right, you know
you're facing the Yankees. They light you up. Happens. Dodgers
light you up. It happens, Astros light you up. It happens.
Nationals lights you happen. Angels like, dud, this something wrong,
I'm wrong. Let's move on to the next one. Real
news or fake news? Doug in a surprising move, I'm sorry,
JOHNA didn't let you play the sound effect on that
(35:44):
last time. I forgot it a surprising move. Rand's defensive
tackle Aaron Donald showed up at training gap despite wanting
a new deal. So Aaron Donald's showing up today real
news or fake news? That is correct. Donald was a
no show has been for all of the voluntary O
t H this soft season. He's set to make point
eight million dollars a year this season, plus another one
point four million in bonuses, has an option for next
(36:05):
year worth almost seven million dollars. But he wants a
new deal. Who wants a new deal? And like, look,
I don't I don't like it when guys don't show up. Um,
And I understand some of it's in the structure of
the contracts and that they're uh, they're they're they're working. Um,
they're working and not knowing if they're gonna be paid
next year. The only recourse you have is sitting out.
(36:27):
The big thing is this. If you want to sit out,
you sit out. But for teams, if you when you
get to the point where you can find players from
missing practices, you need to do it. You need to
do it. Like, look that we gave you a contract,
But the only way in which you're gonna get paid
the proper amount is by not showing up at work.
You know, if you if you feel like showing up
and showing goodwill doesn't do the job. Real news are
(36:50):
fake news. Doug as he's about to enter his ninth year,
is a broadcaster from Monday Night Football. John Gridden has
for once and for all put it into any speculation
about returning the coaching say that his coaching days are
behind him, that his fake news. On the Pewter Report,
grid And admitted he met with some teams, saying, quote people,
just about every year I talked about coming back to coach.
(37:11):
I'm not here every day at four thirty in the
morning watching pinball. I'm preparing myself to come back. I
am every day. I'm preparing to come back. Yeah, I listen.
I think one he wants to come back. Part of
it is he misses it, But part of it is
I think he really like working with Mike Rico and
Sean mcgunn. Is terrific broadcaster. You might even say he's
(37:33):
a better actual play by play guy than Trico. Patrico
is just one of those guys. I don't know how
to explain. It just makes you feel like a million bucks.
And working with him, Um so I thought that that
that was not he didn't he didn't love it last year,
didn't love doing as much. And he's got he's got
the itch and you know, you get nine years out,
you get past ten years in the games sort of
kind of passes you by. He's still involved with the
(37:54):
quarterback camp thing. I think he's come back this year.
Final one Doug Real news or fake news. It's EXAs
man was arrested in New York State after he set
fire to two cars because he was angry that his
wedding was called off. I'm gonna go real news. You
are fake news. It was actually eight cars, so yeah,
he fired to eight cars. Yes, police actually had to
(38:16):
track him down in Houston. Five year old Jimmy Williams
is his name. Surveillance cameras called him doing the damage
to the eight cars on July nine. Jimmy Williams not
happy that he was left at the altar and decided
to take it out on a dots in and evolve
all dots. Why not I don't know. Random car Dotson
(38:37):
neat Nissan Dotson became Nissan, right, and that what's in
the sack? That was Scott lead Sacks fired you that
story I shared yesterday there's a machete wielding clown in Maine,
and I said, that's not the most disturbing part of
the story. That he was out on like two hundred
dollars bail was way more disturbing than a guy of
(38:59):
the clown. The clown man Odell Beckham Jr. Wants to
be the highest paid player of all time? Will it happen?
Find out what the giants said? Up Coming next in
the Doug Gotli Show, What Up To Gottlieb Show, Fox
Sports Radio, Coming to you from the City of Angels.
Writer Rock and Roll. Justin Turner, Dodgers All Star third baseman,
(39:23):
the Big Redhead. I'm gonna join us. Uh, top of
next hour, will ask him about Clayton Kershaw's back, but
maybe more importantly about how this team just finds ways
to win games. Would you stop winning? But you stop
winning making it look way way too easy? Uh? I
want to I want to know about the rally Caps.
I want to know how this thing all started and
(39:45):
when the moment was they knew was something special. It's
crazy what the boys in Blue have been able to do.
John annek UFC play by playboys from Fox Sports and
Fox Sports One tomorrow the prelimbs for UFC two fourteen
or on FS one. Of course, you can hear Annek
plus on the on the pay per view call as well. Um,
and I'm gonna go, I'm gonna I'm gonnall report back,
(40:07):
Report back. Affliction shirt right, and uh, what are the
what are the genes? What are the jeans with the
horse shoes on the like the horse shoe stitching in
the back? Rock and republic as someone will wear a
little rock and I'm kidding, of course you have C
guys like, no, we don't wear a fliction shirt. Bro, Bro,
what Bro? You want something? Bro? You want something? Huh
(40:29):
you want something like? No, I'm just coming. I'm hey, listen,
I just I want to see a fight. I don't
want to be a fight. Okay, bro, you better step
that back. There will be I'm I'm guessing there will
be a healthy amount of bros thrown around, right, don't
you think, oh, you're stereotyping off of USC guys? Yes,
I am. I'm getting a barbed wire tattoo today just
(40:52):
to make sure that I I I fit in right.
I got got a little fade, got got a little
fade yesterday. I mean I didn't get faded up that much.
But yeah, barbed wire tat um and uh, I'm gonna
rock the medium size affliction shirt tomorrow. I'll report back
Monday as to my first ever foray into the world
(41:15):
of m M A. What bro, you want to go
you want. No, I'm I I'm just parking my car,
just parking my car, sir. I just I don't want
to go anyway. Cormier Jones. We'll talk about it with
John Annick, and then Justin Turner joins a little bit later.
Odell Beckham Jr. Super talented and Um, if you have
(41:36):
little kids and I have three of them. Um, do you,
guys romas, do you remember my dog's name? You wear
my my my foot name. It's on the tip of
my tongue. It's it's actually not on the tip of
your You don't have to leave thee. I just go like, no,
I don't remember. I don't actually pay attention when you're talking.
I'm sitting there and making sure that I can I
can play the wrong drop at the right time. That's
(41:58):
That's what I'm doing. That's kidding with you. That's what
I'm doing. Uh, is buyer available? Does buyer remember my
dog's name? No, it's not Pete. You guys don't even
pay attention to anything. You don't. You don't. You don't
do that, buyer. Do you want to? Guys wanna take
another chance? I mean you do? Do you know the
topic matter? That I'm discussing my my dog's name is
(42:22):
and I'm I kid you not. My dog's name is
Odell Beckham Junior Junior's right told on the tip of
my tongue. It's Odell Beckham Jr. Um. And the reason
his name is Odell Beckham Junior Junior is one do
you remember this? Remember the movie Money Talks with with Um?
It wasn't Chris Rock. So what's his name from? From Friday? Uh?
(42:43):
Chris Chris Tucker? Right? He introduced himself as Sammy Davis
Junior Junior. Right Anyway, So that's kind of where I
got the idea from my my son's favorite football players,
Odell Beckham Jr. Plus the dog is a sheepadoodle and
so he's got kind of the curly from and he's
what the dog is black and white. I know Odell
(43:03):
is black. He's not light skinned. He's more light skinned whatever.
We just thought it just kind of made sense, right,
So he goes by Odie, but he's Odell Beckham Junior Jor.
People think that's funny, But I mean, like one of
the things that you know is every little kid is
a jil, Every little kids is a Odell Beckham fan,
they just are there. They like Odell, they like Cam Newton,
(43:26):
they like J. J. Watt, Like those are basically the
superheroes in the NFL. And then maybe whoever else kind
of plays in their town. Like, but those are the
guy I would say, those are probably the guys more
so even than Brady or Aaron Rodgers. Like, well, I'm
talking when you're a little kid. When you're a little kid,
you watched the highlights, and you're a little kid, you
watch the spectacular plays. My my son, but my son
(43:46):
first played flag football was like two years ago. He
was six. He's like, Dad, how come we don't make
any highlight plays. I was like, Hey, that's not really
how football works. Like I I realized he hadn't actually
watched a football game. He had just watched YouTube of
my greatest catches in NFL history, greatest catches in greatest
(44:07):
plays in whatever. And I think he thought that every
play was a spectacular playing, you know, like sometimes you
just run in the line, you get tackled, Like that's
actually football. Um, so I have a healthy respect for
how oh b J is viewed outside of the prism
(44:28):
of just a football player, right, And I understand that
he is actually in the realm of like Steph Curry
and Basketball's which way Steph Lebron, maybe Kadi, but Katie.
I still don't think he's viewed like like Steph is
like Steph is belok and and then baseball Trout and Harper.
Those are the two biggies I think in baseball. And
(44:50):
so when you're among this group of the ten or
so most popular with the twelve and under crowd or
sixteen and under crowd, what does that actually do for you?
Odell Beckham Jr. Signed the biggest deal endorsement deal in
NFL history, now again for football players, because nobody actually
looks at the until Antonio Brown started taking pictures of
(45:13):
the cleats that he couldn't wear in a game and
he could wear in the preseason. Who paid any attention
to him? Right, Because you're not gonna walk down the
street wearing cleats. If you do, you look like you
look like somebody who like, what's the matter with that guy? Right? Um?
But there hadn't been endorsement deals really since bo Jackson
is like one of the last ones I can think
of for you know, or Dion Sanders. Dion has some
(45:37):
great cross trainers. You guys remember the Dion cross trainers
when he was playing baseball. But we haven't had a
big endorser for a shoe company that I can I
can kind of think of anyway. Um, so, oh b
J is super popular, really talented. He's coming off a
year to which was turbulent. Having lived in New York City,
(45:57):
I can tell you on equivocally he's view it as
their best wide receiver and their best offensive weapon. But
their season did not go along swimmingly because he had
the deal with the kicking net, and he had deals
with other players, and and with the officials and with
the NFL, and even his head coach and quarterback called
him out on the radio for like, do just grow
(46:21):
up and play football. Don't get caught up in that
extracurricular stuff. And this is of course a year removed
from when he had the kerfuffle with Josh Norman which
caused him gets a set down for a game. Now,
none of this takes away from his talent. But when
he goes in his long form interview with The Undefeated
and says he wants to be the highest paid player
(46:43):
in the NFL, we kind of roll our eyes and think, well,
first of all, he's a wide receiver, not a quarterback.
He's never going to be the highest paid player. And secondly, like, dude,
you can't just go play football, just go make plays
and the compensation will come. Here's O b J earlier today.
This isn't for me, This isn't PHO from. This is
for everybody in the league, people who deserve it. You know,
(47:03):
you sit there and you watched the people in the NBA,
and it's crazy, I mean, being realistic, it's crazy what
they're getting. And there's people in the NFL who deserve that.
I feel like the players deserve it. I feel like
we go through a lot, we put ourselves through a
lot mentally, physically, emotionally, um, and they just deserve it.
You know, the players in the league deserve it. They
(47:23):
worked hard for it. So it's not for me. This
is this is not for me. Yeah, listen, when when
a guy says, for when a guy goes third person
and then tries to be humble and says that the
salary he wants to be paid more than any other
player in the league is somehow not about him. You're
just like m Now you know why nobody sat next
to a football player when they need to cheat on
the test, right, nobody's ever gone like, man, I didn't
(47:46):
study last night. Who you gonna sit next to football players?
You know they those guys are sharp. Right. He goes
third person and says, this is not about me. It's
not about me, but I want to be the highest
played player in the NFL. It's not about me, Okay,
if it's not about you, if you're gonna be you
don't understand the whole martyr thing, right, like the martyr thing.
(48:07):
You gotta you gotta you like eat no food, like
Gandhi was a martyr, right you. Gandhi wasn't profiting off
of what he was a martyr for. You know, Nelson
Mandela spent years in prison, that's how he became a
a martyr, wanting to get paid more than any other
(48:28):
play in the NFL, and then saying it's not about me,
it's for all of us, Like, oh boy, I'm just
That's like when your dad's getting ready to spank you
and he says this is gonna hurt you more than me.
The mortan hurts you, like no, it's no, it's actually
not it's really not. It's gonna hurt me a lot
more than hurts you. Uh. I like him. I think
(48:50):
he's a super talent. It's a position to which really
feeds the ego of the player, and the player has
to have a healthy ego in order to succeed. I
understand all of that and understand that he's under compensated
based upon the fact that he's achieved greatness in this
first contract should be pointed out he didn't play the
first four games of his pro career because he wasn't healthy,
(49:11):
and guys never point out, like, yeah, I need you
to over I overachieved based on my stats my contract, Like, okay,
so you use that next time you have a contract.
It doesn't work in any other contract anywhere else in
the world. Was like, hey, I've if you have a
new job, like if I'm doing a radio show and
I'm doing college basketball, if I get a TV show,
Like yeah, then I'll get compensated more. Why because I'm
(49:33):
working more. Like you're working exactly as much as you
were told you were going to work, So you're gonna
get paid exactly what your contract is, which is what
John Merris said. John Merrow was asked about what he wants.
He's the owner of the Giants, and he was like, look,
he deserves to be paid. He will be paid. They
didn't say they're gonna pay more than anybody in the
history of the game. They didn't comment. They didn't comment
on on exactly what that means. They just said, what
(49:55):
I think is reasonable. We'd like Odell Beckham. He benefits
from being in New York. And this is part of
the thing that the Giants could absolutely use. Do is
Odell Beckham? Odell Beckham, if he plays for the Carolina Panthers,
if he plays for the Tampa Buccaneers, he plays for
the Philadelphia Eagles. Who plays for the Baltimore Ravens answers? No,
(50:15):
Michael Strahan is on two different networks. He's on Fox
on on Sundays and he's on ABC the rest of
the week. Do you think any of that happens if
he played for I mean picat, for the Minnesota Vikings,
for the Buffalo Bills. Think of the people that you
see on TV. Have they all won Super Bowls? Yeah?
(50:36):
That helps him? I mean how he law in course,
remember when how he Long was the Raider, they were
the l A Raiders. He was a huge He's been
in action movies like he is a superstar. The Pittsburgh
Steelers won four Super Bowls, but also Pittsburgh Steels are
a national team. That's what Terry Bradshaw. Everybody's Dallas Cowboys,
(50:57):
New York Giants. I mean, the one guy who is
really good he's done on a national network that it's
Boomer Seiz. And Boomer Sizen was actually the m v
P of the NFL. But let's be honest, Boomer got
that gig because he's a New Yorker. His last team
was with the Jets. His last run was with the Jets,
and that is more responsible for his broadcasting career. I
(51:20):
think he's a great broadcaster. Bill Simms New York Giants
also in a Super Bowl. So one of the things
that I think O'Dell Beckham is not giving credit to
is the fact he's fortunate to play in the number
one media market. And yes, he's overachieved in comparison to
what anybody's thoughts could be in his rookie deal, and
(51:44):
he'll make them pay, and they will pay, and he'll
probably be the highest paid wide receiver in the NFL
when he signs this new deal sometime during the year
or sometime during the next off season. But the Giants
also know that he's not a quarterback, so he's not
going to be paid more than quarterbacks. Quarterbacks more important
and they're harder to find. They just are. Miami Dolphins
have been searching since Dan Marino left to find a
(52:05):
great quarterback, haven't they. You can make the case of
the Bears haven't had a good quarter haven't had a
great quarterback in fifty years. When you go through teams,
they keep keep looking. The Buffalo bill has been looking
for a great quarterback since Jim Kelly retired. Wide receivers replaceable.
(52:26):
You can find other great, great wide receivers. They don't
touch the ball every possession. A matter of fact, they don't.
They touched the ball a hundred times. They catch the
ball a hundred times a year. They've had a great year.
Some NFL teams have a hundred STAPs in a game.
The quarterback is responsible for those hundred snaps. So he
(52:48):
wants to be paid. He will be paid. I'm not
gonna bite the cat nip of of will he be
the highest paid player ever, he obviously is better than
he is smart when he's talking about the fact that
not about him, and the contract is solely about him,
and the giants are handling handling this smartly. We're gonna
pay him, all right, all right? I got my Affliction
(53:13):
t shirt, my Bob Wire tattoo, my Rock and Republic jeans.
What else do I need? Quote my first ever UFC fight,
John Anni's gonna stop buying help me up coming next.
You're gonna sell your car. There's now a new better
way to do it with True Car. It's fast, it's easy,
and it's the best way to price your car from
the comfort of home. When you're ready to experience a
(53:35):
better way to sell your car or trade it in,
check out true car dot com, Slash Trade Today, Doug
Golip Show, Fox Spores Radio. Uh, I was joking earlier,
da serious? I mean, yeah, there's always a bit of
truth in most sarcasm. That I'm getting Mark rocking my
(53:55):
medium Affliction shirt, uh and getting ready to go out
with the bros and why UFC two fourteen truth is
I'm super fired up. You can see the pre limbs
on FS one and of course the main event, Jon
Bones Jones taking on Daniel Cormier who's O State alum
as m I were in school at the same time
that on pay per view, the man whose voice you
will hear all night, he only rocks medium affliction shirts. Uh,
(54:19):
he went gray early, but he was gray before gray.
Was really cool? Is John Anniky, joins us on Fox
Sports Radio. Seriously, though, um affliction shirts. I'll fit in
one eye. Yeah, dude, I'm just happy you're gonna be
in the building. I think if we're in Orange County
at least we can finally get Doug Gottlip in the building.
So that's that's very exciting news. I'm gonna be close,
like really really close. Like if there's blood that splatters,
(54:41):
it will splatter on me close. So not as close
as you but be but be very very close. Um.
This is one of the things that I think people
maybe don't know about the sport is Orange County is
kind of a well spring, right. It's like like there
are hunting a beach. A lot of these guys trained there.
Is it? Is it bigger? Is this one of Vegas?
Is probably the biggest? What location you guys have been
(55:03):
all over the world? Where is Orange County in kind
of the pecking order of places where the building is
just insane because of people's knowledge of how big these
fights are. No, you're absolutely right. It's a huge domestic
markets for US. And you can really tell the difference
being in Anahem as opposed to be in a Staples
Center in Los Angeles. Even when the media focus shifted
(55:25):
from l A to Anaheim, there was just a different
level of buzz and the open workout was packed in
the nine. So yeah, we expect to be sold out
Saturday night and this has been a consistently good home
for the UFC. And of course it doesn't hurt that
uh it's a championship triple header, including the consensus biggest
championship rematch in USC history at the top of the cards.
So needless to say, man, you know this is my
one hunts a show live of them for the UFC
(55:47):
in far and away the biggest fight I've ever had.
The chances, but Danta Carld, he said this year last,
I just want you to know like it's been It's
been a good run, he felt. He felt like triple
udgets is good and it's time to of kidding. John
Annick joining us. You can fall him on Twitter at
on Underscore an anarkis a n I K. Of course,
you can hear him on Fox, Fox Sports one and
pay per views coverage of the UFC two fourteen. Okay,
(56:09):
so I saw you tweet out today that there was
a noticeable difference in Daniel Cormier's physique for the better,
for worse, much so for the better, Dug And you
obviously know d C well given the Oklahoma state connection,
but he said to me prior to his last fight
against Anthony Rumble Johnson, there was a clear path to
victory to push the pace and extend Rumble into the
(56:30):
ladder round. And when there's such a clear path to victory,
not that he wasn't fit or in shape, but he
wasn't in the shape of his life and as a result, Uh,
the scale wasn't very easy when you're fighting John Jones,
there's really no clear path to victory. So everything that
happens before the fight, diet, nutrition, including the weight cut,
you've got to make sure that that stuff is perfect.
And again this is only a scale visual, but seemingly
(56:51):
everything before the fight has gone according to plan for
Daniel Cormier. He is much leaner than he has been
prior and might even enter the octagon five or six
pounds lighter than he did against Anthony Rumble Johnson back
in December. So all of that stuff he can control,
he has controlled. The question is will it be enough
against the consensus greatest of all time, who who is
obviously at the height of motivation as Jones Fortons for
(57:11):
the first time a long time. Yeah, And and he
dominated him last time they fought. And he's he's a
in addition to being great mixed martial artist, he's a
he strikes me as a better athlete, right, Like, that's
really Cormier kind of tipping the cap that he's better.
I gotta be lighter because I've gotta somehow find a
way to make up this athletic mismatch because John Jones
(57:32):
is so much more athletic. Fair Well, yeah, I mean,
John Jones is certainly the better mis man slots athlete,
and he is going to have the decided reach advantage.
But Doug, if you're talking about these guys shooting a
fifteen footer from the elbow, Daniel Cormier looks like the
better natural athlete. And I wouldn't probably go so far
as to say that d C is the better football
player basketball player. Of course, that stuff is not gonna
(57:53):
matter on Saturday night. I think for John the reason
why he didn't following the footsteps of his older brother
Arthur and his younger brother Chandler, who were in the NFL,
is because he wasn't the most coordinated guy on the
football field. But as far as n m A is concerned,
But when you talk to Jones as coaches Doug like,
they say, we haven't even seen a third of what
he does in the gym. So that's a scary proposition
for d C and everybody else, and for John too.
(58:15):
He's coming in Leaner as well. He says he's not
going to weigh more than two d and seventeen towns
on fighte night. So again, if you thought John Jones
had the speed advantage against d C the first time around, uh,
it will be even more pronounced here in the rematch.
All right, see you you mentioned there's there's three, uh
three championship, three championship belts on the line. I'm I've
been focused this whole time on Jones, Cormier because you
(58:36):
told me this was coming before it was announced. It's coming. Um?
Is it? The is it? The Maya. Is that? Is it? Woodley? Maya?
Is that the one that's that I should be second
most of paying attention to? What else is the one
to which you're like? All right? The guys who study this,
the guys who know this guy's like me, who follow this,
this is going to be an elite fight. Yeah, I
would say it's the UFC welthaweight Championship. Tayland Woodley, who
(58:59):
is an ounce danning wrestler with a huge right hand.
Third title defense for him. He's about a two to
one favorite against Damian Maya. This is a Brazilian Maya
who fought Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight title seven
years ago. Now, he's won seven straight fights down the division.
At one seventy, he's probably the best submission grappler and
Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioner to ever step foot inside that octagon,
(59:20):
and he's one win shy of Michael Bisbing for the
most all time in USC history. So for my money,
Woodley and Maya two criminally underappreciated guys who are happy
to get this shine, and of course the the accompanying
pay per view payday that goes with it. So uh,
you know, would least the favorite for a reason. But
May has been very difficult in this weight class, and uh,
I think he'll be a very hard guy to beat
as well. Here all right, so here's the stuff I
(59:40):
really want to get to. Um John Annick joining us
voice of usc UM. What time do I get there? Like,
there's so many prelimb fights right, like the time? What
time do I I really legitimately, what time do I
roll in? Well, it's funny because I used to cover
boxing when the broadcasters didn't even call the prelim sometimes
they didn't even all the damn comin event. But I
(01:00:02):
think you can do worse than getting in for the
start of the prelims on f x X, which is
at you know, five o'clock. I think six o'clock you're safe.
There are too great that will be in that final
Pacific times on six pm hour and then of course
the paper if you start at seven pm local times.
So if I don't see you buy six pm, if
I'll get a text by six, I'm gonna be a
little concerned. I'll be wearing like something like superro. I
(01:00:22):
might go nineties, like a super like fluorescent real close.
I'm gonna rock some you know, I'm gonna I'm gonna
go do something like maybe get like a dog collar,
and I don't know. I just I want to I
want to make sure you know where I am. Otherwise
I'm just kind of random white guy with the ball cap.
I fit in anywhere in Orange County. Okay, So I
roll in, I roll in at like six thirty. I'm good, right,
(01:00:42):
I'm all right. I just I'm a little I'm a
little nervous. I'm just I'm nervous about that. I'm nervous
about getting there too early, but I'm nervous about getting
there too late. Like I legitimately, John, I have no
idea what I'm doing. Well, dude, grab a headset, because
we're on those things for seven hours. It's like doing
back to back Super Bowls. We could probably use you
for the DC fight at least. Um. I'm fired up
(01:01:03):
for d C. I mean, I know he felt like
it was not his best showing last time round, but
I'm a little hesitant. Just everybody who follows UH Mixed
Martial Arts talks about how how sick John Jones is.
You mentioned how he's only He's only They've said he's
only gotten a portion of what he does in the gym.
Will we ever, as he as he missed that window
(01:01:24):
because of all this outside of the octagon stuff, I
don't think he has. And I will say about the
first fight too, I actually had Cormier off to one
after three, so the problem was DC had nothing left.
He took the entire fourth round off and then had
very little left in the fifth round. But as far
as John Jones is concerned, I don't know how mature.
You were a probably more mature than me, But I
(01:01:44):
I thought I knew it all at twenty five, and
I certainly didn't. So now he's thirty, he now is
sort of obsessed, Doug with being the Michael Jordan of
mm A and being the greatest of all time, and
being an active champion who fights three or four times
a year. Obviously he's got to turn those actions or
those horrns I should into actions. But unbelieving what's coming
out of John Jones right now. And that doesn't mean
his post fight party outside the US hasn't already planned.
(01:02:06):
But I do think if he wins the belt, you'll
see Johnny Bones turn around in three months and really
try to have a legitimate crime that will lead to
the legacy he wants as the greatest ever. Do it
all right, So the prelims begin on f x X.
You can obviously buy the main event on pay per
view and you will hear the dulcet tones of John
nick uh the Silver Fox, who will be on the call.
(01:02:29):
He's far younger, far younger than he looks, because they
told him when he when he went silver early. Like, dude,
when you get to be like fifty or sixty, people
are still gonna think you're thirty because you got a
young face. You just had well and then you have
good hair. It just it just went silver and and
look credit to you. Like guys that dye their hair,
it always looks bad. You didn't. You went, you stuck
with it. And I'm actually kind of jealous. I would
(01:02:51):
rather have yours than mine, which is disappearing. That's that's
that's the main point I want to make. I think
we want each other's problems. But for me, it's like
an s OS pad up there. I shave it off
every chance, I guess. See this weekend, But John Annick
joining us live from Anaheim. That's the Honda Center side
of USC to fourteen. Yeah, I look, I'm this is
this is my maiden voyage. But this would be a
(01:03:12):
good kind of box to check because they am going
to the Mayweather fight. I didn't go to Mayweather Pacio,
So I've never gone to a title fight in boxing.
But I'm doing, We're doing. I'm gonna do Mayweather McGregor,
which is not that's not Is that a title That's
not a title fight? Is it? I don't even know.
I don't even think it's gonna be a good fight,
but it's gonna be a scene. Right. I've never done
(01:03:34):
a Stanley Cup finals. I've done a several hockey hockey games,
NBA finals, done World Series, done All Star Game, Baseball done,
home run Derby done like anything you can think of,
basketball has done. I want to go to a big
like European soccer match. Right, World Cup on on Fox,
(01:03:56):
Fox Sports one, Fox Sports next year. Right, we gotta
do remote question? College football? Been to all of them,
been to been to a big bowl games, national championship game.
This is good. I'm excited getting the tattoo tonight. It's
gonna be a little sore, have the band aid over it.
But I'm all right, I'm really I'm getting a hand
(01:04:17):
up our wire tattoo. That's really what I'm doing. But
I just I want to feel that. I want to
feel the vibe of being tatted up. Tatted up. One
of the best quarterbacks in the nash Football League, who
has won not one, but two Super Bowls, is talking
about retirement. And it's not because of his play on
the field. We'll discuss why after we find out what's trending.
(01:04:39):
Doug Galli Show, Fox Sports Radio. So earlier this week,
I reacted. I think I feel like I reacted more
to that New York Times article than some of my
Fox Sports Radio and national radio brethren. Um, but I mean,
I don't know, like, shall we be freaked out when
a hundred eleven brains are donated f CT, Like, well,
you know the ratio was skewed because you didn't have
(01:05:01):
a control group of fair fair, Okay, But the fact
is football, at a high level, and even at the
college level, repeated head trauma causes brain damage. Don't believe
me we have some brains donated to science. What what
level of brand with the percentage of chance of brain
damage is that we still haven't been able to establish.
But it's a scary, scary thought. UM. Couple updates on
(01:05:25):
that one. Nearly five years ago, the NFL donated thirty
million dollars the National Institutes of Health for brain research
initiative that Commissioner Roger Goodell touted as a demonstration of
league's commitment to fund independent science exploring the link between
football and brain disease. The National Institute of Health officials
decided months ago to let the agreement expire in August
(01:05:45):
with more than half of the money unused. About that,
the NIH said there are no current plans for the
remaining funds and the agreement will simply expire next month
as originally planned, with at least sixteen million dollars yet
to be paid. UH Roger Dale was asking how the
league planned to follow through with commitment to the NIH.
(01:06:08):
The NFL responded to the league officials saying they are
engaged in constructive discussions with the NAG fundraising arm regarding
potential new research products and remaining funds for our thirty
million dollar commitment with this. I mean like, look, yeah,
we have to be fair. This was a big project
to which at the time you go back to two
(01:06:30):
thousand and ten and there was not a concussion settlement
between the league and the former players. You guys remember
that settlement which is here. Here's actually what happened. True story.
Um One of the reasons, one of the biggest reasons
that the league chose to allow teams back into the market,
(01:06:50):
the Los Angeles market, was the thought that that concussion
settlement with former players was going to reach two billion
in dollars in total settlement. And the NFL owners look around, like,
who's coming up with that money? And so Roger doll
and some of the top owners came up with the idea, Hey,
(01:07:11):
look if we use them new revenue, new revenue generated
by relocating teams, and of course we're able to create
more revenue with Thursday Night Football. Remember five years ago,
no Thursday night package. Then CBS had um us to
two different years of it, and then they now they
split it with NBC. Like that's all new revenue that
(01:07:33):
they didn't have. They also didn't have games in Mexico City,
They've had a games in London. All this new revenue
goes into a pot to which they're gonna be able
to pay out over twenty years. The concussion settlement, but
most of the money is going to come from relocation fees.
But before this thing was settled, Roger Goodell is like, look,
(01:07:53):
we really want to we really want to research this thing.
Here's thirty million dollars commitment to the National Institute of Health,
and they didn't a sixteen million of it. To be fair,
it's possible that the research project never got off the
ground or wasn't able to do as much as they
had promised the NFL to do. We don't know about
any sort of issues in some of the research, but
(01:08:16):
it feels like the NFL was simply doing something to
look good while it was being while their pants are
being sued off, and now that they're no longer being sued,
now that settlement has been reached, they no longer have
any interest in funding any sort of medical research to
discover how how bad the link is between CT and
(01:08:38):
current former NFL players. Ben Roethlisberger spoken out about the
New York Times article about the research. He said, just
all those things combined, being healthy, being able to catch
play catch with my kids, I feel good mentally. I
know this new study came out players brains who were
studied had CT is actually above, but maybe Big Ben
(01:09:01):
does have CT I don't know. I'm kidding. I mean,
I don't know what the exact percentile is, but it's
fair to say Ramos that if you one ten out
of one eleven is higher than right, that's that's higher
than because nine out of a d If it's one
ten one out of one eleven, I'm gonna go, can
(01:09:22):
somebody do the math on this, I'm gonna say that's
like nine nine point three point four. So anyway, Big
Ben undershot a little bit. I know it's just study
NFL brains who were studied at c t uh. There's
a lot of scary things. And I think my wife
would be okay if I hung it up too. But
(01:09:44):
I still love the guys. I still love the game,
so it was right. So it was right for me
to come back and give it everything I have this year.
It's just fourteen years a long time. I think the
average life expects to the NFL is years is maybe
three and a half years now. I've been best to
play for a long time. I think that seeing my
kids grow up in the off season, I love spend
getting to spend time with them, that I come here
(01:10:04):
in football season just takes up so much of your time,
even when you get home. I try my best to
turn off when I walk in the front door. I
think I do a pretty good job, but it consumes
me or consumes you in that way. Uh. Look, Roethlisberger
does like attention, and this will give him more attention.
That's the only thing you can surmise. When he was
(01:10:25):
talking about retirement, retiring last year, and we didn't think
he was going to retire, but when you say, hey,
my wife wants me to retire. We talked about this
with Giselle. Giselle has pointed out that Tom Brady had concussions.
When your wife is sitting there going like, we have
enough money, I promise I will not spend like we
spend now if you will just walk away from this
damn game now. Philip Rivers joined us yesterday and he said, hey,
(01:10:49):
I don't play at the same position where we're getting
hit in the head all the time, so it hasn't
even come up in our discussions. I don't think I'm
the same as an offensive lineman, defensive lineman, linebacker, which
is what Tom Brady has said, not so many words,
but I think Big Ben some of it is he's
looking for affirmations, for confirmation of the you know, I'm
(01:11:10):
kind of getting to that point. I don't spend a
punch of time around my kids, and my wife is
on me about me spending more time at home and
how much effort, how much energy, plus this whole brain
damage thing. Um. I believe Ben a little bit more
now than I did in the off season where he talked.
When he talked about retiring, one of my Fox Sports
(01:11:34):
Radio teammates said that Blake Bortles is more valuable than
Odell Beckham Jr. I'll tell you if I agree with him.
Up coming next broadcasting live from the studios of Fox
Sports Radio, here's Doug Godlib. When you're ready to experience
(01:11:59):
a better way to sell or trade in your car,
check out True car dot com slash trade today. No
no no no no no no no no no no
no no no no no no. Doug Gottlieb show Fox
Sports Radio around much. You got big plans this weekend.
This is still we're still in pre soccer season modeaching soccer. Nope,
(01:12:21):
not yet. I do have a class I have to
take for you fourteen to get one thing I like
about a y s so is that they do prepare
coaches for coaching. What how do you? What's your coaching style?
I'm interesting that, Um, I can't let the players play
until the quarters and then I when they come in,
(01:12:42):
then I talked to him about what happened on the field.
I never scream at the girls during the game because
they tend to look over and they lost. Yeah, they can't.
They're not They're not yet to the point to which
they can just play and not think of that. Yeah,
I'm trying to decide, like I actually have the ability
now to coach like my son in baseball, maybe football,
or if he wants to play soccer, he wants to
play all of it, and trying to say what I wanted?
(01:13:04):
What else I want to do? I mean, you don't
need me to tell you this because your dad coach
and all that stuff. I say, go for it. I'm
so enthused to coach my daughter Sarah. I'm enthused to
coach my son Lucas. It's fun. It it really makes
me feel good. No, and he and get up in
the morning. He's still like I mean, he's he's all,
he's all in a right, like he'll get up the
more like, Dad, let's go, let's go play something. You know.
(01:13:25):
I coached youm in flag football last year was awesome.
I coached me in basketball last year. Basketball wasn't as awesome.
Part of it is that when you know a lot
about basketball, I think people think that you're gonna wave
a magic wand with their kid said their kids gonna
be awesome. You're like, dude, they're eight. They're eight. We're
working on dribbling, passing lips. That's what we're working on.
Fundamentals um every day. I like to bring back a
(01:13:47):
portion of something I heard earlier on Fox Sports Radio
and now. Clay Travis was on earlier today on the
uh was it? I'll kicked? The coverage is in him
of his show Early Mornings on Fox Sports Radio. He
had this to say about Odell Beckham Jr. Who went
on a website and said I should be the highest
(01:14:09):
paid player in the NFL. Clay talked about oh b
J and the comparison to quarterbacks. O'Dell Beckham Jr. Is
worth like a one point two a game for the Giants.
You may not like Eli Manning, but Eli Manning is
infinitely more valuable to the New York Giants than Odell
Beckham Jr. Is. In fact, every single starting quarterback in
(01:14:31):
the NFL is more valuable to their team than Odell
Beckham Jr. If the Giants make Odell Beckham Jr. The
highest paid player in the history of the NFL, it's
one of the dumbest decisions in the history of the
NFL period. Um, yeah, I look, I don't. The dumb
decision would be what the Jets did with Darrell Reevas.
(01:14:54):
Do you mean with the Jets did with Drell Revers?
They wanted to They were so happy with where Drell
Revers was. They said he's the best cornerback in the NFL.
And so Droll was like, all right, so I gotta
be paid like the best cornerback in the NFL. And
at the time Nomini Asmay was given a terrible contract
by by the Raiders, and roe Rieves like, I'm better
than Ambi as why I should be paid more than
(01:15:15):
he was better than him? Um, you just you have
to manage it. You have you have to manage the
content of the desires of the player and be reasonable
about where he fits into the pecking order. How you
can do it with the salary cap, what it does
to the locker room, what it does the league. So
my expectations. But first of all, Odell Beckham Jr. Has
(01:15:37):
to grow up. And I like the idea that he's
showing up. Right, He's showing up to work and he's like,
I'm I'm here to practice. The contract will set you know,
he stated what he wants, but it's not like this
is what I want or I'm not even showing up
when he's still under contract. So in terms of maturation,
showing up to work is really important. I know he
missed O T A S. I would have preferred to
(01:15:58):
be at O T A S be because of the
narrative that he wasn't growing up last year. But fine,
he's there when he's supposed to be. As long as
he's productive in the preseason. It doesn't take practices off
because he's kind of quasi holding out while not holding out.
I'm good with it. I do think the contract works
itself out. I think this is one of those weird
out of things to talk about. So we're talking about
(01:16:20):
Odell Beckham Jr. The Giants need a running game to do. Uh,
they need a running game and Odell Beckham Jr. Has
to grow up and not get involved in any nonsense
on the sidelines or nonsense against with defenses, and just
play because everybody's going to try and get into his
head because others have gotten to his kitchen before. Right,
(01:16:40):
we kind of all know that, um, But he was
wildly mature last year, even though incredibly skilled and talented
last year. He he catches the ball, He's one of
those guys. There are some guys that are yat guys
and there are some guys that are great catch guys,
and he's a little bit of both. Now, he's not
(01:17:02):
as big a weapon. He's not Julio in terms of size,
but the bigger guys have a tency to to slow
down quicker, to break down easier, and to not have
the longevity, whereas Odell Beckham Jr. Is more. He has
the dexterity of a Steve Smith, only he's much bigger
than Steve Smith. So he's not a huge He's only
(01:17:23):
what six ft tall if that? Not a huge wide receiver,
but man, he makes him big plays and he's electric
with the football. I'm not gonna sit here and tell
you he's not awesome. He's awesome. He gets the football.
You know he's got the ball, but he doesn't touch
it all the time, and frankly plays mostly right. Quarterbacks
are much more value, but much harder to come by.
(01:17:44):
Even the bad ones have greater value to the team
than the really good ones. And the best point you
can make is, what's the best season a wide receiver
has ever had? Calvin Johnson's season, right, how many games
did they win? They won four games that year. What's
the best season a quarterback has ever had? Tom Brady's
season when he had oi touchdown passes? How many games
(01:18:07):
do they win? Sixteen out of sixteen? And that's what
the Fox said. The Dodgers are the best team in baseball. Um,
over half the teams haven't won fifty They've won seventy games.
It's crazy crazy. How did this happen? How did this happen? Like?
(01:18:29):
What what was said? What was done? How did this happen? Um?
Clayton Kershaw has heard again? I can can the Dodgers
learn something from playing without kerr Shaw down the stretch
last year that allow him to to to play better
down the stretch, to play better in the playoffs this year?
And magic Johnson created some expectations with something he said Today,
(01:18:51):
We'll ask Justin Turner all Star for the Dodgers. He
joins us. Next, what up to Gottlieb Show? Fox Sports Radio?
Got so much to get to today, m give you
my thoughts on Colin Kaepernick, who the Ravens seemed to
(01:19:14):
have taken a pass on. Um Kyrie Irving? Was it
six teams have already made an offer to the Calves?
What what makes the most sense? Uh? And you're starting
to understand why the Celtics have decided to hold back
those resources, not going after Paul George. Never know what's
going to be available on the market. I continue to
(01:19:35):
prepare for my first ever UFC fight I'm gonna see
in person. But I'm also I'm doing an all sports
state tomorrow. I'm going out to see the Dodgers and
the Giants. What one of the great rivalries and baseball
only problem is this year? The Giants suck? God, remember
they're just not good. But the Dodges, on the other hand,
they're on pace to win a hundred and thirteen games.
They already won seventy games, have the league and won
(01:19:57):
fifty and they've won seventy they got an all star
third baseman. They got the best picture went healthy, best
picture in baseball. Kenny Jansen has been lights out as
a closer. Um, they got a dude who who started
the year in the minors, and Chris Taylor looks like
just another superstar. I got Corey Sager, arguably the best
young shortstopping. Basically got just loaded and uh we're kind
(01:20:20):
of we're we're pleased just punch to be joined by
Justin Turner. I mentioned that all star third baseman for
the Dyers. He joins us here on Fox Sports Radio.
Who won the Kershaw had his ping pong deal last night? Right? Yeah? Yeah, yeah,
he had it every year. Last night was the night
and another outstanding event. I noticed you didn't say that
you want it, You didn't brag about your performance. So
(01:20:42):
how did how do you personally do? Now? I was
partnering up with Jimmy Kimlon. We had a good time.
Uh we we got knocked out in the third round
by Taffoley and and Ross Stripling, but we did take
down uh Luke Walton and um Casey Flack in the
first round, so that was that was a good good time.
Doubles Pink is doubles ping pong better than singles ping pong? Uh,
(01:21:05):
doubles a little tougher. It's a little more strategic. You know,
you gotta alternate hits, alternate serves, you gotta serve across
a cross court and on the table. So there's there's
a lot more rules than doubles and it's a little tougher.
How's your spin game? Like you all top spin? Do
you do you do all the different spins or you
just yeah, I mean how's your how's your spin game?
I think that's where I think that's where we went
(01:21:25):
wrong in the third round. I tried to uh, you know,
Hammerson balls instead of just sticking with the spin the
soft spin stuff, and uh you know that that was
the demise of of Jimmy and I in the third round. Yeah,
they just and then the other guy you play against,
they just get defensive. They just hit it back and
you just try and smash it and he gets worse,
and where you get madder and matter and matter and
now you can never get anything on the table. Right. Yeah,
(01:21:48):
Strip Strip was really good. He was just he was
the guy was just spinning and getting back on the
table and making it tough to tough to return. So
uh but again it was it was a great night,
a great event for a great cause, and uh a
lot of unbelievable people showed up for it. So, um,
you know, kudos to the Kershaws. They two amazing people
who do a lot of great stuff, uh, not only
(01:22:10):
here in l A but around the world hoping out family.
So that was a pretty good night. Yeah. And and look,
you have your own foundation too. You know how much
how much time it takes an effort it takes to
try and kind of make a change, Like it's gotta
be it's it's gotta be interesting that having your own thing,
Kershaws having their own foundation, Like are they competing foundations?
Are you trying to kind of match them dollar for dollar?
(01:22:30):
Absolutely not. I think it's uh, it's actually the opposite.
You know, We're we're all trying to uh show as
much support as we can for each other's and knowing, uh,
you know, the platforms that we have are are pretty
big and and we have the opportunity to impact a
lot of people and change their lives. So, um, you know,
I support you know, kerk Shaws. I I go out
(01:22:53):
for a police Poker Van a couple of months ago. Um,
Adrian does a softball game I try to get to
every year. So, uh, there's a lot of good stuff
going on with the Dodgers off the field, not just
on the field. And uh, you know we're all out
there supporting each other and trying to make an impact
on people's lives. Um, you know, away from away from
the stadium. All right, enough of that on the off
the field, helping people doing better thing, making mankind better.
(01:23:15):
Let's talk about what we really want to about. Justin
turn joining us in the Doug Gotlips Show. This is unbelievable. Like,
I know, last weekend was a tough weekend, right, two
and two, Kurch gets hurt, like that's a but you
guys turn around win five and a row. That's after
winning a eleven row before that two game losing streak,
your seventy one and thirty one, and you guys are
like twenty one and eighteen to start the year. So
(01:23:37):
what what happened? What happened? Uh, It's hard to put
your finger on one thing because so many guys are
are are doing great things this year. You mentioned a
lot of them on the top of the show. Uh.
You know, uh Bellinger gets called up. He's only second
in baseball and home runs right now, and he missed
(01:23:57):
the first month of this season. You talked about Chris Taylor, Uh,
who's quietly becoming, you know, a star in the game
with what he's doing offensively, playing all over the field. Um.
The pitching staffs unbelievable, Alex Woods having a breakout career year, um,
which is awesome to watch. He's going again to night
for US. Uh. And then you mentioned, you know, Kenny
(01:24:19):
Jansen at the back end of games, when you have
him coming out with elading the ninth. Uh, you know,
there's a pretty good chance, Uh, you're gonna be going
into the locker room pretty happy. So, Uh, everything's kind
of fallen into place right now. Things are going really good,
but it's still early in the season. There's still a
lot of baseball we played. Uh. You know, the beauty
of this game is it doesn't matter what it says
(01:24:39):
on paper, it doesn't matter who's supposed to win. You
still got to go out there and play and crazy
things can happen. Um, So you know, we're gonna go
out and continue to get better and stay hungry and
and keep trying to put our our our foot on
the pedal and keep going forward. Um okay, So Chris
Taylor walks into the into the clubhouse. Can you mentioned Bellinger?
He joins a month in the sea and Taylor walks
(01:25:00):
in the in the in the clubhouse, Like, did you
guys know what these young guys have? Did you do
you have any idea what these got young guys had?
I think, Uh, well with ct you know, he was
up with us last year and uh all he put
together just outstanding at bats every time he got an opportunity,
even though it wasn't it wasn't a lot of opportunity. Uh,
(01:25:23):
it was awesome. And then he had two oh seven
last year, like he had too oh seven last year.
And granted, like I know, he's played, he played about
a hundred games in the bigs going back to his
time in Seattle. But to go from two oh seven
with like a two sixty two on base two now
hitting three twenty and on base like thirty nine percent
of the time, Like, I dude, his worst is three
(01:25:44):
points seven. I mean, he might have put together some
really good at bats last year, but he looks like
a great hitter this year, I I did, you really
saw it? Well? He was. This offseason he made some
he made a lot of adjustments in the swing. He
he kind of restructured everything that he was doing, uh
and and got himself into a better place. So now
(01:26:07):
when you take that equation of taking good at baths
last year, which he did, but he just wasn't driving
the ball like he wanted to. Now he his swings
in a good spot. He's efficient, it's it's working well,
and he's taking the same good at bass. Now you're
seeing the positive results. He's driving balls out of the
park all over the place. He's he's walking because he's
a dangerous hitter now, so guys have to be a
(01:26:27):
little bit more careful to him. So you see the
on base go up, you see the slug and go up,
and it's all by product of what started out is
just being able to take good at bat. Now his
his swing's efficient and and you add that together and
there's your three point seven war. Yeah, Kurch got a
little he got a little defense if he kind of
called his own press conference early this week because people
were talking about, you know, he won't be back to
the playoffs, and he's he's like, look, I'll be back
(01:26:49):
in sept He wants to pitch in September. Um, I mean, look,
he's your ace. He's the best pitcher in baseball. And
for the second straight year he hurts his back. What's
this like to to do this kind of deja vu
feeling where you don't truly know how healthy he's going
to be when it gets really really important. Yeah, there's
(01:27:10):
no there's no replace in Kerchu. There's no way to
fill that hole. Uh, he's the best picture on the planet.
And I think we all you know, know that we
want him back with us in the playoffs. And you
know in this time that that he's gone. If you
look at last year's season when he when he got hurt, uh,
you know, the team kind of came together and actually
(01:27:31):
started playing better baseball because we knew we had to,
you know, kind of fill that void. So, um, who knows,
maybe we'll play even better baseball than we were now
that we then now that he's uh, you know, rehab
and trying to get back. And I think the good
news with him is is the everyday stuff, you know,
isn't bothering him as much as it was last year.
You know, he's still last night obviously at the tournament,
(01:27:54):
his kids were there. He's still carrying Cali around. So
everyday stuff isn't too bad, which is which is a
good sign for me. And um, you know, he's one
of the hardest working people I've ever been around. So uh,
if he says he's gonna be back, I believe him,
and I know he's gonna do everything in his power
to get back. So um, we're just looking forward, uh
(01:28:15):
to that day where he gets back on the mount
and and and he'll take us into the playoffs. All right.
So I grew up playing playing catcher and then when
I got out in the field, they're like, oh, you
should go play third base, And always I hated third base.
It's there, there's some rockets go down there third base
right like you just like the uh, I mean they
call it the hot corner for I mean, they come
out and this is like you know little league, pony,
(01:28:37):
pony league whatever in high school, Like it comes off
there's there's smoke coming off the baseball. Um do you
do you ever get does there a healthy fear? Like
how do you handle the You gotta have like a
healthy fear, but you you're obviously not scared of a baseball,
but I mean, like the exit velo from some of
these guys is over a hundred miles an hour. Give
me the real sense of what's going on um in
(01:28:59):
your mind. Uh, when when you're standing at that hot
corner and one of these dudes that has that huge,
those huge exit velo numbers comes up. Yeah, I'm pretty
comfortable over there now. But you know when I first
started playing third base, uh, it was it was a
little intimidating over there. I do a drill actually, when
you know, I just got down on my knees and
(01:29:19):
and coach Worldward, our third base coach, uh takes a
phone go from about ft away and he just hits
groundballs at me pretty firm. So basically I have I
don't have feet to run out of the way of
the ball. I have to, you know, practice sitting there
and catching it. I'm on my knees. And that drill
alone has made me a thousand times more comfortable at
third base when the John Carlos Stantons and the Aaron
(01:29:41):
Judges come up, because you know, I've done that so
many times and and I trust uh my hands and
my glove being able to catch the ball that I
don't have to worry too much about getting drilled one
of those one of those balls that are smoked down there.
But it definitely can be in a intimidating position you're
so close and uh, but I enjoyed It's It's pretty
(01:30:02):
fun from me. I saw you wearing the major league
T shirt last night. So are you doing like the
Roger Dorn at the end of the movie where you're
just taking him off the chest? Right? Uh, you're intentionally
taking him off the chest just to be a tough
guy with that that that fung go bat. No, it
was a funny story actually. Uh. Courtney of fiance was
picking out a dress for the event last night and
(01:30:23):
she as a joke kind of sent me, uh the
shirt and the shorts and was like, oh, check this out.
This would be pretty funny and I was like, yeah,
let's do it. And so she she actually picked that
whole outfit out for me, and uh it Actually I
think it was a hit last night. Everyone was talking
about my shirt. So it was solid, solid major league
shirt with a little baseball in the mohawk in it.
It was it was pretty cool. Are you going to
(01:30:45):
shave the beard when you get married, like like you know,
like your wedding day, you gotta have you gotta like
clean up for your pictures. But this has kind of
become your signature. Look, I mean, people are wearing beards
in the crowd at Dodger Stadium, are you. I mean,
have you discussed all right, we're gonna be I'm gonna
be cleanly shaved for the wedding. So this is the deal.
I've said it a couple of times. I'm trying to
(01:31:07):
make it seem as if I'm gonna shave my beard
if we win the World Series, and that way I
don't have to say I'm shaving it for the wedding
and and catch a bunch of crap for people from
people about that. So I've said, I've said publicly a
couple of times, when we won the World Series, I'll
shave the beard, and then uh, it'll work out for
both sides because then it will be uh, it'll be
short for the for the wedding as well. Now you know,
(01:31:28):
Magic said you guys are gonna win the World Series, right, Yeah.
I heard him that. I was actually walking in when
he was talking, so I I heard all that stuff,
and Uh, yeah, we're We're a confident group. We believe
in ourselves and I think we'd be very disappointed if
we if we fell short of that. How do you
not have what happened to the Cubs last year? Cubs
were they didn't they didn't have this type of run,
(01:31:49):
but they were a dominant team. They're basically laughing they
weigh in the playoffs. You mentioned that anybody can win
even and you've had a ton of one run games.
We know in baseball, Oh that does have a tendency
even out. But like do you guys, have you guys
talked about, Hey, how do we maintain this and not
lose focus when we're just dusting off the NLS. Uh, yeah,
it's came up a couple of times. You know, reporters
(01:32:11):
are always trying to dig in and and bring stuff
like that up at Uh, this group has been unbelievable
at you know, not getting caught up and in the
in the record and uh, not dwelling on yesterday, not
looking ahead to tomorrow. Um, it's literally a bunch of
guys coming in talking, communicating and trying to figure out
(01:32:33):
what we gotta do to win a game that night.
And I've never been a part of a team that's
so ah, I guess in the moment and and process oriented,
not worried about results, not worrying about, um, you know
what's ahead of us. And I think I think that's
I know we're we're a good team on paper, but
I think that's why we've been playing so good is
(01:32:55):
the ability to uh stay in the moment and and
stay worried about today and not worried about tomorrow and
not worried about yesterday. And that's where I think most
of these good results are coming from. UM, I have
to I can't let you go without asking. The last
time we saw you at bat, you get the you
get the game winning hit. Um. It was an incredible
(01:33:16):
comeback against the Mina, against the Minnesota Twins. Um. You
mentioned how your process orientity, don't worry about the future,
But take me into that at bat right like, UM,
you know you're up, it's five, five game, it's bottom
of the ninth, it's two nights ago. What's the actual
mindset of of Justin Turner when you know that that
a single scores Barns and you end up winning the game.
(01:33:40):
That's a that was actually a really tricky one because
you know, I'm coming up with second and third and
two outs, so you know there's a space open. I
looked down on the bullpen. They have a lefty up
and ready because Bellingers behind me, so you know they
have an open base to you know, be careful with
me if they want to. But at the same time,
I don't think, uh, there's a manager in the world
(01:34:02):
or a person in the world that would you don't
want to pitch around me to get to Bellinger in
that moment. So uh, he's been ridiculous when it's late
in games and clutch situations like that doesn't matter if
there's a righty or lefty. So uh, for me, it's about,
you know, making sure I don't try to do too much.
I'm not trying to hit a home run to win it. Uh,
just trying to make sure I get a good pitch
(01:34:22):
in the zone. And I actually got down oh too early,
and uh, you know, took some tough pitches and then
it got to three two, and then again that's where
it gets even tougher. He had thrown me all fastballs
up into that point. Now it's three too Uh, you know,
he doesn't want to just lay one in there. He's
got an open base to work with. But uh, you know,
he threw a sinker down and in and I was
(01:34:43):
able to sneak one through the sixth hole to uh
to win it. But again, yeah, there's a lot of
cat and mouse and thinking about what was gonna happen
there and how they're gonna pitch me. But luckily, uh
you know, got the big hit and and then we
got to go home. We didn't have to stick around
for sixteen seventeen innings like we could have. Yeah, who
beat you up the worst? You know, they all come
celebrate you. I'll start mobbing you. Who got you the worst?
(01:35:04):
A twig? He kept pulling my hair. I almost didn't
have hair left, sending a yank it out, so I
think I turned around and fired my helmet at him.
But those things are tough when you're when you you're
the guy that gets the hit you get, you get
beat up pretty good. I think I baby powder all
in my eyes and face and twigs pulling my hair,
key kids picking me up and grabbing me. And yeah,
(01:35:26):
it was uh it's it's a great feeling. But then
you know you're gonna get beat up a little bit.
So with friends like that. With friends like that, who
needs enemies? Hey man, congrats and the walk off. At
least you did get to the third round, you know
when I get dusted first round of the ping pong
And best luck this weekend against the giants. Who really
appreciate you. Join us on Fox Sports Radio. No problem,
picture for having me, all right. It's Justin Turner, all
star third baseman. Just got the walk off hit against
(01:35:49):
the Minnesota Twins, complete a sweep of the Twins at
Chevez Ravine. Dodgers whole hum of one, five in a
row that after losing two, But then they want a
eleven in a row for that seventy one and thirty
one on a season that they began with a eighteen
record of wow. Uh. Colin Capernick can learn a thing
(01:36:09):
or two from the girls of t l c R

Claint Claint Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. There was
some talk from people like me yesterday that Colin Cabrinick
could sign with Ravens. Right, Joe Flacco bad back out
(01:36:50):
for around a month, maybe a little bit more, maybe
a little bit last. We don't know. But Greg Roman's
on the offensive staff, he was his offensive coordinator San Francisco,
John harbab or the him horriball like all that made sense.
Then Mike Florio shot it down earl to day on
Pro Football Talk, Colin Kaepernick, the possibility with the Ravens
is what now of latching on zero a guy nobody
(01:37:13):
ever heard of, from a team nobody ever heard of
in the league, nobody ever heard of. But it's a
camp arm, I mean, and that's been the that'll be
the excuse for the next month. We're signing camp arms
and Colin Kaepernick is in a camp arm. Now of
course he's uh, he's talking about the newest signy for
the Baltimore Ravens, the camp arm. If you will that
(01:37:37):
actually Um actually played for Greg Roman, even though he
didn't play for Greg Roman, names David Olsen, who played
some Marina League football. Now, look, I think part of
the there's a there's a myriad of issues that have
kept Kaepernick from being signed by a team, one of
(01:37:59):
which quitely is, you gotta not be too proud to
beg right, a little TLC for you ain't too proud
to beg like you have to go with you. You
have to have the idea that you want the job
or a job you just hey man, just give me
a chance. And as much as that might sound like raveling,
(01:38:20):
like how about do you want to work? How I
do you want to work? We have this discussion with
people who are not in the workforce or unemployed. Anybody
could tell you like, wait, I understand you want a
managerial position, but what about a sales job. I understand
that you don't want to work in retail, but right
(01:38:41):
now retail is the only thing available. I understand that
you don't want to wait tables, but you can actually
make a good amount of money waiting tables. Or you
don't want to do be a bartender, like I don't
want to be a bartender the hours really late. Like yeah,
but you can make a good amount of cash. I
don't want to park cars, but like, yeah, okay, but
you can make a good amount of cash, and like
what other jobs are out there for you? And in
(01:39:03):
you know, if you're sitting there, if you believe in yourself. Now,
to Kaepernick's credit, there never may have been an offer.
They might have said, like, look, Flacco's coming back. We
already have mallet, We're good. We don't want to bring
in here and give you some song and dance, you
throw some footballs around, then you end up having Now
he got cut by the Niners, but now you got
cut by us, and now it just kind of starts
(01:39:24):
to develop up like you don't want that. But if
you're Kaepernick, you just go. Like if you listen to
what John Harball said, going back to yesterday, he's like,
I want to talk to him and see what you know, Uh,
if he's if he's in shape, if he's ready to go,
what his expectations are. One of the problems that people
have had Kaepernick because he hasn't told anybody what he
wants other than he wants to be a starter. Like okay, great,
(01:39:46):
what else do you want to tell, like how much
do you want? How much? What are you willing to
take two? Uh to play for us so that you
can show us you want to be a starter. But
you're not a starter right now. So I mean like,
at some point you can apply for jobs that you're
(01:40:07):
under quality. He's there's not a quarterback job that he's
underqualified for. There are plenty that he's overqualified for. But
at some point it's better to be working than sitting.
And now maybe maybe he's gonna allow the mallet thing
to play out. Ryan Mallett had a terrible day at
(01:40:27):
practice yesterday, five interceptions. Mallett has never been seen as
a guy who lived up to the building with the
hype of his of his arm. But to this point
the Ravens have not reached out. They got Joe Flacco,
Ryan Mallett, somebody named Dustin Vaughan as well, Zach Terrell,
(01:40:49):
Jerry love Lock. They got dudes I've never even heard
of camp arms. And they just signed David Olsen who
played for Greg Roman at Stanford, but he never actually
played for Great. Those are just guys come in, throw
a football, makes make grand, make fifty grand, be the
fact girl the problem happy to be there, and then
when Joe Flacco comes back, they keep two quarterbacks Flacco
(01:41:11):
and Ryan Mount. At some point, if your Kapernick, just
go hey man, I just I want to get into camp. Um.
I want to get into camp, and I want to
show people that I'm ready to play quarterback. It ain't
about the money, which is I've said, this is kind
of what Derrick Rose did. Derreck Ros took two million dollars.
I just want to show I can play. I average
(01:41:31):
eighteen game in the Knicks. People don't think I can play.
I'll take two million dollars. I'll just show Lebron. I
can play Lebron things I can play. Everybody knows I'll
be able to play. Shaq just fired a shot across
the bow at a at a person. I said we
would not name him ever again on this show until
further notice. All out Shack to mention his name after
we find out what's trending. Mike Silver tweets out. Mike,
(01:41:59):
of course, worked for the uh NFL network and he
works for Sports Illustrated. The Ravens have heard from New
VERUS fans regarding Colin Kaepernick in the last days. Last
couple of days, many staunchly opposed his signing. Huh interesting, Um,
(01:42:19):
you know one of the reasons that that Joe Flacco
is is well regarded. First of all, Joe Flacco, well,
I don't think he's the top five. The whole Flacco
is the elite thing was really funny for a long time.
Flacco could make every throw and he is just he's
six ft six, six ft seven, and he like he
has a different style of leadership. He is not a
super super vocal leader, but even he is more vocal
(01:42:42):
than Kaepernick ever seemingly was within the confines of his
locker room. But it's interesting that fans there was the
study or the findings, uh the going back to yesterday
to which was it, fans said that they didn't watch
a ball as much last year. Those fans, I would
(01:43:04):
end up being like three overall football fans said they
didn't watch as much football because of Colin Kaepernick and
the protest. It was an extremely no no number. It's
one of the things with phone calls or tweets or emails,
like those people may actually be a representative of three.
They just maybe more vocal about it. I do I
(01:43:26):
do think that his protests bothered some people. But I
also think that sometimes and and to me, I think
that the perception of his protest by people in the
media was wrong. Like it was. It was a staunchly
anti police, anti uh government stance. It really was. It wasn't.
Could it have been anti purely police brutality, yes, but
(01:43:47):
that was those were not the words that he said.
He called cops murderers and said cops and murders walking
the streets. It became a an anti police, not anti
police brutality. Anybod It can be against police brutality. That's
that's that's a but you have to be very smart
with your words. Listen, I'm not against policeman. I'm against
police brutality. He wasn't. He was about making social changes,
(01:44:10):
and he called cops murderers, and it did for some people.
It spins out of control to where they thought that
he was against war cops, soldiers because they don't pay it.
People don't pay attention to the depth of what anybody's discussing.
On the other hand, I thought that many of my
media brethren kind of gave him a pass and said
it was strictly about police brutality, and it was not
(01:44:34):
It's about more than that. And he's trying to stay
a political in the election, which you can't really do.
You can't take a political stance and then say, but
I'm out of politics. But no, that's not really the
way it works. Offer up some solutions anyway, Big Friday
(01:44:55):
news dump in the White House to Rant's previous out,
but that Wow, let's get depressed. Depressed by buyer, Dan, buyer,
by buyer, what he got the new shock dis tractor
(01:45:16):
premier in about four minutes. Duck. Okay, so that's we're
gonna save that baby for last. Okay. Steelers quarterback Ben
Roethlisberger told the Pittsburgh Post Gazette that he isn't sure
if you'll continue to play after the season, citing that
the new CTE study has him thinking about retiring. He's
also thirty five years old entering his fourteenth season, and
(01:45:38):
that his wife wants him to retire. So the wife
wants to retire, you gently retire, I mean, like, here's
the here's the You've got to be very careful, right Like,
if you're his wife, you want him to retire, but
you have to. It's it's Like we talked about inception
earlier this week with Brad Stevens doing the inception thing.
She wants to plant that seed of retirement, but there
needs to be he needs to affirm that within his
(01:45:59):
own mind because otherwise he retires early and he resents
her that's what you're gonna end up presenting her. So
I think that the study helps her. I think the
fact his body didn't feel good at times. He's been
hurt the last couple of years. Um, but you gotta
be He's gotta be why, Like Gizella has to be very,
(01:46:20):
very careful, and so does ben Ethlisberger's wife has to
be careful. They both want their husbands to retire and
want it sooner rather than later. But you don't want
them to retire strictly because of you, or feel like
it's because of you, because then they'll resent you and
you're together kind of forever after that. I also think
he's the biggest piece in Pittsburgh and now with the
threat of maybe stepping aside, this is gonna make the
(01:46:42):
Ben Roethlisberger love in Pittsburgh grow even more because they're
gonna need him even more. Yeah. I mean, look, he
he likes a good amount of attention. Does he attention?
The NFL Network says that the Steelers are ending a
year out, So Mike Tomlins contracting in the steel City.
Been the head coach through the twenty nineteen season. Interesting,
(01:47:04):
you know, he caught a lot of heat last year.
Terry Bradshaw called him out, called him a cheerleader, and
I don't think this is their defense. Is kind of
what the Steelers do, right. Um. Do I think he's
the best coach in the NFL. No, but I think
he's a pretty solid guy and the guys generally tend
to like playing for him, and had the Steelers haven't
been able to figure out the Mark Tavis Bryant thing. Right,
He's still not clear to play. He's been suspended parts
(01:47:26):
of the last two years. You'd have to think that
if Roethlisberger is healthy, of Bryant's eligible to play and
not suspended, they have as and and Levian Bell signs
his deal. They're as good as anybody in football. The
problem is their defense hasn't been really been that good.
So I don't mind them giving an extension. I don't
know if it was necessarily needed, but it's kind of
(01:47:46):
what the Steelers do they've only had like three or
four coaches in the history of their franchise. Shacks dis
track coming up in two minutes is John Ramos would
say two minutes. And ESPN reports says as many as
twenty teams inquired about a Quiet Cave's point guard Kyrie Irving.
The report says six teams made actual offers. Those teams
the Spurs, Clippers, Knicks, Sons, Timberwolves, and Miami Heat. Lots
(01:48:11):
of like that's where you're worth what somebody's willing to
pay for you, and they haven't had, you know, they
haven't added to generate interest. It's not like that with
Karmelo Anthony. I actually think the Knicks are still trying
to generate more interest for him and Melows not helping it.
But I only want to go to the Knicks. I mean,
I want to go go to the Rockets. It's pretty
obvious that Kyrie Irving is a star. Everybody thinks he's
(01:48:33):
a star, and everybody knows he's on the market, and uh,
once word got out, it's spread like wildfire and now
there's a lot of people interested. Gonna be fascinating to
see what the what the Calves do how do they
balance out getting the best player for now and protecting
themselves in case Lebron James leaves at the end of
next year. I thought the inclusion of the Clippers actually
(01:48:55):
making an offer was interesting. You can make an offer.
Don't mean you're gonna get him, right, sure, but I'm
wondering who they would you know, put in that package.
Probably everybody but Blake in DJ I didn't have to
get have to include one of them, right, you would? Again,
we don't know what the like we can put it
in an offer. I mean, right, it's like eBay, like
(01:49:15):
you can offer five dollars or something that somebody wants
ten tho dollars for, but does mean it's going to
be accepted. One story to go until the shock distractorle
of our ball Free at your point guard Brandon Jennings
Saturday one year deal Doug to play in China next season.
Gonna get paid about one point five million dollars according
to reports. Money grab time. Right, once you get out
of the NBA, and he had a tough year as
(01:49:37):
a backup, you go to China, you can get paid,
you don't have to play nearly as often and point
guard me Stepan Marbury. Saw they have a They have
a Stefan Marbury Museum in China. Stepan Marbury Basketball Museum
in China. Yeah, they have a Stephan Marbury. You know,
the most popular player in China's outside of Yaming, Ty
(01:49:58):
McGrady because he played with y'all main all sure. Their
view of basketball a little bit different than our view
of asking. All right here, it is the moment that
you have been waiting for. Shaquille O'Neill's distract to LaVar
ball and you think you're like you ain't like me,
(01:50:22):
You're like you. They were people connected. Dude is talking loud.
I don't understand walking around, I say the true pick laying.
How do you think that I'm about to spit fax?
I walking back A ninety two. I came out with
(01:50:42):
the shocks. I've been doing this a old time, when
it was averaging two points, riding the pine. You see
my t shirts, you see my feet work. That was
me first. How many parades did I give them? L
a streets? How many rings with Kobe? See he thought peace?
I mean the raid? How many ceremonies I want? You're
(01:51:08):
beating melony? You think you mail man? You ain't even
Chef Maloney Jeff Maloney, well, not not great. Here's my
problem with it. We keep talking, Why is Shaquille O'Neill
even rapping about LaVar ball? Why even answer? Because all
it does is empowers of our ball? When will he
(01:51:29):
go away? He will go away? When we stop talking
about him? Backing out there and pressed that was the press.
The cans Win really trade Kyrie to the Celtics? Would they?
Would they? We discussed next. When you're ready to experience
a better way to sell or trade in your car,
check out true car dot com slash trade today. Mm
(01:51:53):
hmmmm mm hmmmm mmm. Doug got Live show Fox Swords Radio,
so uh. Adrian Wardzanowski is reporting that as of now,
leading the clubhouse is the Boston Celtics to acquire Kyrie.
Irvy Caswin trade Kyrie to the Celtics? Would they? Um?
(01:52:18):
You know, look, there's there's certain things that are ironic,
right or maybe not ironic just and I don't know,
it's it's karma. Just things are funny the way it
works out. Like did you guys watch what happened with
health Care Bill last night? Do you guys watched the
skinny Healthcare bill repeal, whatever thing you pay any attention
that one almost Who was what? What was the turning point?
(01:52:41):
What changed things? What? I just know that they they
did not turn it over because some Republicans voted against it. Yes,
But who was the lynch pin Republican that I want
to say? John McCain, John McCain, who is fighting fighting
off brain brain cancer and of course is a former
pow um remind who is the Republican senator that Donald
(01:53:06):
Trump said is not a hero because his heroes aren't
captured back when he was before he was elected, John McCain.
I think it was John McCain. It's funny the way
things work out, right, Okay, So I bring that up
because here's Dan Gilbert, who earlier this week, remember what
he said the press conference, is talking about the Indiana Pacers,
and in an effort to make himself look better and
(01:53:28):
make it look like, hey, we've been doing stuff here,
Dan Dan Gilbert was talking about the Indiana Pacers. He said, right,
I think they could do better. Now. Indiana had a
declining asset. Right, they had Paul George who said he
wanted out, only had one year left in this deal.
(01:53:50):
And he's like they could have done better. Now, most
of that was not just he didn't he didn't care
what Indiana gotten returned. It was the idea they wanted
Paul George, felt like their package was better. But it's
more to tell their fans like, look, we try to
get Paul George, we just couldn't. Now he's Indiana. Right now,
he's got an asset that has declining value even if
(01:54:13):
he's in his He's in his prime years old, just
turned coming off his best season of probi's one NBA championship,
been to three straight NBA finals. Like Kyrie Irving's a legit,
but his value is diminished slightly at least because he
said he want to be traded and Lebron wants him out.
(01:54:36):
Isn't it funny that some of these teams that were
they were listening and I'm sure, I'm I can Yeah,
I don't guarantee many things this, I guarantee whatever they
get for Kyrie Irving in return, Kevin Pritchard will say
at some point, I think they could have done better.
Right I I'll bet Kevin Pritchard's smart guy. He'll say,
(01:54:59):
I will say that it Cleveland could have done better.
What they did, and people are freaking out that Russell
Westbrook and Lebron James are working out together. Does this
mean they're teaming up? I have said that, don't don't
guarantee that Russell Westbrook's not coming to the Lakers next year,
Westbrook obviously being from being from Los Angeles. But also
remember some of this about who your representation is. Sum,
(01:55:21):
it's about shoe company, Sum, It's about like, who do
you want to work out with? Gont be fascinating to
see would they trade him to the Celtics and whatnot?
I mean, that's that's gotta be the whole thing with
the Calves is are they going because the story with
the Indiana Pacers is the reason they didn't want to
trade with the Cavaliers is we don't want to see
(01:55:42):
him see success in the Eastern Conference. So are the
Calves willing to sacrifice what should be the best possible
return they can get is from the Boston Celtics. Celtics
have the have three first round picks next year, including
the Brooklyn Nets. The Brooklyn Nets number top pick. They
have Jayson Tatum, they have Isaiah Thomas, they have Marcus Smart,
(01:56:06):
they have Horford. They have Gordon Hayward and a trading
they just got. But they have all of these Marcus Morris.
They have all these valuable assets there plus a ton
of picks. Tell us what you want. And it doesn't
mean that that there's not a third team involved and
not other players involved, but they have resources to make moves.
(01:56:27):
Careful how critical you are of other people. What they
get for they get in return for a declining asset.
It's like the guy who is critical of his neighbors
sold his house and well you because should have gotten more.
And then all of a sudden your house is for
sale and you you gotta move, and it's getting right now.
When you get to August, you gotta sell that house
(01:56:49):
because once school starts in September, you're not getting the
right value for your house because nobody wants to move
their kids in September. All right, I'm going through my
first ever You have c fight tomorrow. Ramos Is he's
reading books, he's studying, he's trying to make sure that
his you fourteen and you ate soccer teams are are
loaded up. Um and this is your last weekend without
(01:57:14):
football on your television. And what you should do is
don't tell her that next weekend football is on your TV.
But get it all done. I don't want to take
I don't want to take down that playhouse like, but
you do want to do it next week? Do you
want to do Do you want to do it in September? Like? No,
get it all done, honey. You should go ohead and
get a manny petty. You really should. I got the kids.
(01:57:34):
It's good. It's good because next week meat should be
cooked on the grill. Your new TV better be up
and humming and running. You better have that Sunday ticket ready, right.
Red zones only like a month away from firing up
the red zone. And by the way, I specifically didn't
talk about the Baseball Hall of Fame because the Baseball
Hall of Fame put a couple of juicers in, and
(01:57:57):
especially known juicers in. I got no time for it.
