Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're dug out the show Fox Sports Radio live and
direct from the City of Angels, the city where if
the season were to end today, I do believe we
would have two playoff teams in Major League Baseball at
two NFL teams, two soccer teams, two of everything. We're
basically the Noah's Ark of of sports. Uh, and we
(00:25):
will survive the floods. I don't know what's more remarkable. Uh.
Maybe there's three different remarkable things. One the Dodgers, who
won yet again, put three on the board in the
bottom of the ninth inning. Another come from behind win.
Another win for the Dodgers, feels like, um, it feels
like you remember in Aladdin. You can watch the movie Aladdin.
(00:47):
Another suitor for the princess. Remember that, that's what Another
comeback win for the Dodgers, That's what it reminded me
of last night. Yet another win for the Angels. And look,
the Angels stink. They're not good. They're playing good, but
not good. This is a really hard one for people
(01:09):
to understand, and it's a very hard thing to act
to talk about, like with your wife, right like I
and I don't know if this has ever not worked
for you, but I can promise you it has not
worked for me, even though it should work for me.
Right to where your wife is having a bad day,
My wife is a very sweet lady. I don't just
say that because she listens. I say that because it's
(01:30):
actually true. We've been together for nineteen years, married for
seventeen years. But she, like anybody, can have bad days.
Combine combined bad days with things that I do that
tick her off, that kind of and three kids. If
we all act a way in which UH could upset
her and she's having a bad day, I will say, like,
(01:53):
you are acting like a wench, you know, would be
the right. And she's like, you're calling me a wench.
That's not what I said, sweetheart, Darling. I'm saying you're
acting like a wench, which means you're normally the opposite
of that, or normally far from that. Just your actions today,
and I'm sure where's your actions day are wench? Like right,
(02:15):
it doesn't work for me, but it should work for me.
Like so, the Angels are a not a good baseball team,
tons of injuries over the past two years, they're starting rotation,
and yet they're playing like a good baseball team. Right,
it's like somebody who's not nice who's acting super nice,
like that guy is cool. He's not normally cool, but
for whatever reason in the context, he's really cool that
(02:37):
somehow they're winning. I don't what's more remarkable the Angels
being a wild card team as of now, the Dodgers
fifty one games over five d all to come back
wins without Adrinknzalas and Clayton Kershaw as of now, or
the fact that neither of them are really talkable topics nationally.
I'm gonna go with number three. That's because I want
to talk about Lebron James. The silence is in fact deafening. Now.
(03:02):
Chris Brussar is gonna join us upcoming Brussard of course,
you may have heard him on Colin cow Hurst radio
show a couple of hours ago. You'll see him across
on Fox Sports One. In the weekends, you can hear
him on Fox Sports Radio. Chris is great, He's got opinions,
and of course he has sources within the NBA. And
the story comes out that Lebron may or may not
(03:24):
have sat down with Kyrie Irving like sat down were
they at the same club and they both sat down. Yes.
Was it a sit down meeting where you got together
like an Italian restaurant and there's a guy in the middle,
gos Hey, sit down, you sit out, You guys work
it out. That didn't happen. They may have been in
the same place at the same time and may have
been able to coexist. Does that mean Kyrie staying Yesterday,
(03:50):
we reacted to the news from Chris Sheridan, long long
time he has covered the NBA, who said he talked
to an NBA source that Bron is gone, and then
followed up that tweet by saying, any any reports of
Lebron's guys uh disavowing this tweet are disingenuous. We all
(04:12):
know he's gone. I can tell you based upon the
people I know. The Lakers think they're getting him. Don't
say they know they're getting him. They think they're getting him,
and they continue to opine to Rich Paul, who's the
best friend the agent of Lebron. James and Lebron of
course tweeted about uh Magic Johnson. He tweeted about needing
(04:37):
some pickup ball when he comes talking about playing pickup
ball when he comes home, and referring to home as
southern California, not referring to home as Akron, Ohio. All
of these things lead lead us to believe that there's
where there's smoke, there may in fact be fire. But
here's what I said earlier today on Colin Show, and
(04:58):
here's what I believe. You ask somebody who's been dating
a woman for more than six months she the one,
and he says, we're just having a good time. Right,
then he knows he knows that she's not the one, right,
(05:21):
because if she's the one, you're like, are you gonna
get married? He eventually like, you know, we just gotta
I gotta get some things right in my life. I
gotta get to my job, she gotta get their job.
We've gotta figure out a couple of things. But yeah,
because you know, and if you don't know, well then
you do know, right, you do know. John Ramos has
(05:42):
been married longer than me, eighteen years. How long did
you date your wife before you guys get married. We
started dating in two you got married in seven years.
But how long into it did you know? I would
say the first year? Yeah, you know, you're like, yeah,
you're gonna get married? Like no, no, not yet, not
not not ready yet, got to get other things in
my life, kind of situated, got to grow, mature, evolve
(06:05):
a little bit. Right. But if you somebody to ask
you within that first year, like she's way like yep, yep, yep.
And if you say don't know, you know, you just don't.
You just don't want to express like Nashy ain't the one.
But it's really cool, we got that. We already kind
of got past all of the different you know, we've
already been rounding the bases a while, and it's really
(06:27):
hard to get past first. And it's about the best
second base, you know, again like just getting that poince.
H'm fine, fine, fine, fine, fine. That's the way it
is with Lebron, and he was absolutely positively never leaving
(06:48):
Cleveland again. When you just say like I'm never, I
don't know why where this comes from. I'm not leaving Cleveland,
where I'm from my home. This is what I came
to do, these people came to be with. This is
more important than the past, all the stuff he wrote
in that article, but you don't hear any of that.
The silence is in fact deafening coming from Lebron. He
(07:10):
hasn't even offered up. I don't want to engage this,
this silliness of it. Like he hasn't even done the
non denial denial. He has done the my name's Bennett,
and I ain't in it. You couple in all the
different factors yesterday we share with you Rick Buker's tweet.
Rick Buker Bleacher Report also has his own national radio show, said, hey,
(07:31):
interesting note to remember, uh Dan Gilbert gave seven fifty
dollars to Donald Trump's inauguration right, and look, there are
there are things that tell you I can no longer
be in business with that person. One of the reasons,
(07:52):
and Bustarry is gonna join us a moments. One of
the reasons that Kyrie Irvan's like, look I'm done here
is with all of the other things work. The big
thing for Kyrie Irving was they thought about trading him
last year when they won a championship. They offered him
up in a trade this year after losing in the championship.
And just like, you know, at some point what am
(08:13):
I doing? I am not valued enough by the people
that are important. And if Lebron James is open to
the possibility of trading me two years in a row.
Why am I even here? Why am I busting my
busting my nuts just to kind of impress this guy
and play with this guy in his team and his
regime in his town. Like, no, thank you. That's not
(08:35):
any different than the woman who's at some point go like, wait,
you talked to your friends about you your lawyer about
getting divorced twice in the past twelve months. I'm out.
So I honestly and truthfully believe that Kyrie is gone
(08:58):
because there was the wall, there was the tipping point
of twice you think about trading me before it's ever
before I asked act to be traded. I'm out. Lebron's leaving.
It's his town. I've never really been valued is valued
like they tell me. They haven't been valued me in
their actions, just like Lebron with all the other stuff
(09:19):
going on. I told you this yesterday. I'm I've kind
of become more a political than political with this thing.
Just because you can't have a you can cease to
have conversations with people if you say I'm a Trump
guy or I'm an anti Trump. There's just people who
are like I come, I completely agree with who was it? Um?
(09:44):
Uh was it John Lynch Right, the GM of San
Francisco for it. I says, it's just it's too divisive, right,
that the protests are too divisive. What he means is
any of this political conversation has become way too divisive,
to which there is no opportunity for debate discussion any
of this. But I can tell you you don't have
(10:05):
to read his Twitter account. Just follow him and you
know where Lebron James sits. And if you want to
know what led to Lebron James, be like, dude, I'm
done with playing for earning money for working for Dan Snyder.
Isn't it at least possible and maybe even likely that
(10:25):
the straw that broke the camel's back is wait, wait, wait,
after the election, one in which I made an appearance
for Hillary Clinton, one to which was as divisive as
any UH in in recent memory. You gave seven dollars
to the dudes UH inauguration. I'm done, I'm out. And
(10:50):
that's why I'm not saying anything, because everyone knows what
the answer is. By saying nothing at all makes sense.
I bring that around enough. There's been a change in
the Mayweather McGregor fight, and UH, it wants us to
believe something which is really hard to believe. I'll tell
(11:12):
you if I believe it. Next, with True Car, you
can find out what other people in your area paid
for the same car you're looking for and on average
save over three thousand m s r P. Whether you're
looking for a new or used car. Visit True Car
and enjoying more confident car buying experience. Doug Gotlives Show,
Fox Sports Radio. UM, I don't know if you guys
(11:32):
saw that the van killed thirteen people in uh in
Spain today. My brother is assistant coach at Oregon State.
I know we're on in Eugene. I know you can
hear us in Corvallis because I I've heard from from
some members of their athletic department when I when I
talk about Oregon State Athletics, Um, everybody is safe and
(11:54):
accounted for. They were getting ready for a pregame meal,
but it was right in front of their hotel, and
some of the members of the traveling party were actually
very very close to the van that that that intentionally
ran over thirteen people. So ah, look, I'm not going
to spend a ton of time on this, but it
is one of those. UH, live in the moment because
(12:16):
you just never know. Like you know, my my brother,
he this is the second international tour trip he's done
UM as an assistant coach a couple years ago with Cal.
Berkeley was his coach for six years of Cal. With Cal,
they went, they went overseas, obviously, no incident whatever, and
you know, you take your family and you don't think
about anything. And I was just, you know in Israel
where you do think about those things, but there is
(12:39):
massive security, and uh, I did not bring my children.
I didn't bring them because of security concerns. More I
brought him, didn't bring him just because long days of travel.
It just I didn't feel like I didn't feel like
it was it was worth it in terms of the
experience they would get and how much they would remember,
and how much whining and complete leaning would would go
(13:00):
along with it. I appreciate it at my age a
little bit more than I thought they'd appreciate. My wife
kind of agree with us, but well that's some scary
stuff when you start to get texts, hey I'm okay,
And I was like, I didn't even know anything happen.
And then I look up on CNN like, or thirteen
people were killed in Barcelona, Like, well, oh, yeah, you
guys are in Barcelona. No, it's right in front of
our hotel. So if you're listening to us in Corvallis,
(13:23):
we're in Oregon. Know anybody in the organ state traveling,
but there's a couple of teams. Everyone is safe and
accounted for. Um. In boxing, glove size is actually regulated,
and it's regulated based upon It's regulated based upon your
(13:44):
weight class. The hundred and forty seven pound weight class
uses eight ounce gloves, the hundred and fifty three weight
class WE class uses ten ounce gloves. And the idea
is the bigger the hand, the more one support, but
(14:04):
also the more uh. You know, you want guys to
be able to land blow, when you want guys to
be breaking their hands. That's the biggest thing in in
bare knuckle boxing, you know, the first thing is you
do worry about somebody getting hit and and hurt badly
or even in the really really where they use three
four ounce gloves in in M M A H. The
(14:25):
contact is much more vicious, but you also run the
risk of breaking your hand more easily, and smaller hands
need less ounces of padding around them. So we talked
about this a little last week where they were trying
to get a change, and they did. In fact, the
Nevada Boxing Commission did allow for a change from ten
(14:47):
ounce gloves to eight ounce gloves, even though this is
being fought at the three pound weight class. And so
you ask yourself, why would they make the exception? Why,
what's what's the impetus behind making an exception? Is it
because Connor McGregor is tiny and he's more No, not really,
(15:11):
um may whether it's not. He's thought at different different
weight classes. But if you look at the pattern that's
been created in leading up to this fight, which is
a week from Saturday in Las Vegas, will be there
all next week, right Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, I'm not gonna
(15:32):
do on Wednesday and Thursday. No, I'm like serious, there's
nothing really to bet on. Like the best part about
going to Vegas for me because I'm not like I
could go do it play blackjack, Like okay, that's like
one night one after Like you can't do like three
nights in a row. My my wife, I asked my wife, like, hey,
(15:54):
why don't we bring the kids, you know, take them
to one of the places of the push that we
have a pool at our house. It's just not a
hundred and twenty degrees outside, like it's a fair point.
The fights on Saturday night. Also Saturday Day is the
championship of the Big Three, so it's actually a really
good sports weekend. We'll be there Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. This
(16:14):
is These are first world problems, right, free hotel room
in Vegas with nothing to do. These are very much
first world problems. But I ain't going out clubbing, right
I'm not. I will throw down some money. My favorite thing.
I like to bet on sports more than bet on
like myself for the cards, I just do. I don't
bet on the ponies and or do I know how?
But this is before the window of college games, pro games,
(16:38):
basketball games, Like that's the best, right, Like on a
college Saturday, NFL Sunday, betting some parlay's betting some games,
watching it from a sports book, like that's a good
time right there. And then whoever wins, you know, picks
up the tab at dinner. I can do that. But
if we look at the pattern created oh over the
(17:00):
fight promoters leading up to next weekend, there's a pretty
obvious thing that they're doing right. It's the same thing
that you do when you're a defense attorney. When you're
a defense attorney, you don't have to find out who
done it. You don't. That's not your job. Your job
is to not go like this guy did or that
(17:21):
guy did, or this guy did it, my guy didn't.
All you have to prove is your guy might not
have done it. That's all you have to do. That's
your job. A defense attorney's job is to create doubt,
reasonable doubt. Well, I'm not saying that the postman did it,
(17:45):
but he don't have an alibi and he comes by
that house every day at one thirty. Ah, I'm not
gonna say that it was It occurred by you know,
natural occurrence. Is that she that the woman who was
murdered hit her ahead because she passed out. But five
(18:07):
years ago she had a feigning spell. What's to say
she didn't have a feigning spell, hit her head, fell
down the stairs, broke her neck naturally. Again, this doesn't
mean you can't create unreasonable doubt, reasonable doubt, and if
you create enough reasonable doubt, your client can in fact
(18:30):
walk because that's the degree to which you have to
convince the jury or convinced the judge beyond a reasonable doubt.
That's what McGregor and Mayweather's teams are trying to do.
Remember Flay Mayweather sat down with Stephen A. Smith. He's like, Hey,
I'm not as good as I used to be, not
as fast I have been powerful. I shouldn't. I shouldn't.
(18:54):
Let you know, this guy go to the distance. I
should have knocked him out. I could be had you know.
Then you're like, well you have economcgregor, great striker, but
how good a boxer is he? Oh? You know what
he fought? Polly knocked him down a couple of times.
When that story came out and it became unbelievable, Dana
(19:14):
Dania Dana White tweeted out the video here it is.
It doesn't mean that it was legit or fair fight,
or doesn't mean that that that that Polly many uh
didn't slip or he didn't win other parts of the fight.
All they're trying to do is create reasonable doubt. And
how do you do that. You do that by saying, look,
(19:37):
here's a guy who normally fights with four ounds clubs.
He's an incredible striker. If he hits Floyd, it could
end the fight in one punch. It could be the
Michael Moore that Michael Moore won the heavyweight Championship of
the world. Puncher's chance that that could happen. A hunter's chance.
(20:03):
On the other hand, Um, we have to create why
how you you You make the gloves smaller, the punches
are more powerful. You'd say that Floyd Mayweather is slower,
he's more likely to get hit, and then you show
Connor McGregor against an a legitimate box or a former
(20:24):
champion of the world, knocking the guy down. Hey, look,
Floyd can be hit. Connor has boxed, and when he
hits guys, it hurts more. And we're gonna make the
gloves smaller. I'm not saying that conn McGregor is gonna win.
I'm just creating reasonable doubt. That's what the promotions side
(20:50):
of this event is trying to create right now. It's
a reasonable doubt fight. That's it. It's the only re
in that you would possibly watch because otherwise you're like,
I've seen Floyd fights. He doesn't even like to get
close to a guy. He likes to get to lead,
he likes to play defense. Afterwards, nobody can hit him.
(21:13):
It's not that much fun. I've seen Connie's great in
the octagon, but he's kind of awkward as a Foxer. Like,
why am I gonna watch? Well Connor could dock him out?
I don't believe it. Let me create some reasonable doubt
for you. Let me create some reason. Uh. Real news
or fake news is upcoming next Doug Olive Show, Fox
(21:34):
Sports Radio. You know what I might do? William plan
on doing? Christopers Sorry's gonna join us, uh next hour
in the show. Also, Eric Davis from Speak for Yourself,
a Super Bowl champion, will join us later on in
the show as well. You can download the podcast any
of our four interviews of Sandy Good Chargers yesterday. We
(21:55):
had Tom Telesco on the general manager. We had Hunter
Henry on his talented tight end. We had Keenan Allen
on who, if healthy, will be a star wide receiver
for the Bolts. And we had Joey Bosa on Joey
Bosa going through his first training camp. We had Joey
Bosa on his way. You can download that where wherever
you download podcast iTunes, Fox sports Radio dot com, download
(22:17):
and rate as well. Um and I thought to LESCo
had some interesting things to say about about scrimmages versus
exhibition games, and why those preseason games are in fact needed. Um.
I thought he was very, very forthcoming. So you can
download that my work in some phone calls this hour.
(22:39):
We haven't heard from the people. I know Ramos jumped back.
I know he did. You did jump back eight seven
seven six three six nine eight seven seven. On Fox.
Let's let's Steve the Seger dig into my sack. Let's
reach into godly sack. The second game here, we gold
(23:00):
me open this thing up, Steve, would you pull up? Well,
we are playing real news fake news. Okay, so uh
let me see if I get this this game right.
We've done it before. Basically, you read a story as
if it's real, and I say it's real, Ord's fake.
That's correct. Story number one. A major league team rotated
infielders twenty two times during nine innings, trying to hide
(23:24):
an out of position player. Real news or fake news. Wait,
wait one more time. There's a player who's not good defensively,
So a major league team rotated their infield twenty two
different times to try and avoid him having to field
a ball. But rotated. I'm gonna say that that's fake
news and the spectacular. It happened with the Mets last night.
(23:46):
Two guys were out and they had to play their
everyday catcher at third base, and the rotation from manager
Terry Collins last night. He wanted a position so his
catcher wouldn't be forced to field his position. Last time
he started on defense other than catcher was five years ago,
a couple of games at first base, so it depended
on which side of the plate the batter hit from.
(24:08):
As Drew bal Cabrera middle infielder ended up handling all
five of his chances playing between second and third, And
it was until the ninth that this catcher actor actually
had to be involved in a defensive play. He caught
a Harden most pop up. It worked. It was Travis
Daro correct. Uh, they're playing him out in the field
and trying to avoid a groundball hit to him. I
(24:30):
don't I thought it was. I was watching the game
and I was, you know, I was like kind of
with passing interests to see what the Yankees met you doing.
Plus Boog Shanby was calling the game. He's coming out
to some Angel games next week. You can stay in
my house this weekend. Catch up with all my all
my baseball CA knowledge, um and I know also in
that game, uh, Aaron Judge strung he first ate another
(24:52):
home run monster home run hasn't landed yet, but he
also struck out and he said the all time consecutive
games strikeoutster, you get thirty three. I believe that's correctly.
He's batting on the last month and a half. But
when he hits him, they go, they go, and he's
still on base the time. Yeah, I just I don't
really under I kind of think that's overthinking it Isn't
(25:14):
it like if you're a catcher and you played in
the field in Major League Baseball and you take pregame
warmups like I don't know, like you end up trying
to you try so hard to do something and ends
up backfiring. I have seen an extra innings, whether you're
stuck in a with a picture in left field or something.
Then he keeps switching left to right field. But this
(25:35):
I agree, twenty two times they're rotated the infield. Last
night at the padres announce a take your Dog to
the game promotion for every home game in September. It's
gonna be bark at the park at Petco Park, every
home game, every home game in September is there. Yet again,
under five hundred haven't made the playoffs. I think in
(25:56):
a decade of real news or fake news, I don't
think it's gonna be every home game. It is fake news.
There is no such Dodgers have won three in a row,
but they've beating the beating the Phillies, who are just awful,
the worst team out, just just awful. But they don't.
They usually have take your dog to the game night
most teams, usually for one night during the year. The
(26:17):
Dodgers have it in the all you can eat section
in right field. Interestingly enough, if you could buy a
ticket for your dog, they have a parade on the
field before the game and the dog sits with you
in the stands next to you during the game. Yeah,
my dog be great. I have a sheepy doodle. He
be he likes other dogs to play with their dogs.
Problem is, there's always been one guy who brings like
a pit bull, like a stud collar. That might happen
in a Dodger game. That absolutely could happen, especially out
(26:39):
in the all you can eat section right Like no
one who's sitting you know, no, no, no, Dodger fan
Giant fans definitely to like right, Giant fans will Giant
dogs dogs, giant giant Hey, what what is it? A
Dodger dog who actually also available in the all you
can eat section? How much does it sit in the
all you can eat section? Uh, it's more than in
(27:00):
left field. It's like thirty five dollars instead of fifteen
or twenties. But it's all you can eat. So like, yeah,
nine innings free food. Yeah, you started just doing the
math in your head. Go to batting practice. Next story
with college football, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly blames
in season fundraising for his team's new facilities as part
of the reason why the Irish struggled so badly last season.
(27:22):
Real news or fake news it is. In an interview
Spleecher report, he believes the time commitment into fundraising bleeped
up last year's team. End quote. Notre Dame finished four
and eight. He said, my flawed philosophy was that we're
going to score points early while we're figuring out on
the other side with a young defense. Didn't happen? Uh? Yeah,
(27:45):
he tried to be CEO head coach, he had to
fire um Brian Van Gorder as his defensive coordinator, who
wasn't well liked by some of the assistants and by
the defensive players. Uh that backfire. They continue to have
injuries in important position and on offense. Do I think
it was a contributing factor? I do. Do I think
it was the main factor? I do not. Onto Tampa, Florida,
(28:10):
the three major pro sports teams based there have dedicated
monies to help remove a Confederate statue from the city.
Real news or fake news is real and their spectacular
joint statement today from the Buccaneers, Lightning and the Rays
of Major League Baseball. They are working with the Chamber
of Commerce of Greater Tampa because they're recognizing, quote, this
(28:31):
monument does not reflect the values of our community, and
x Bucks head coach Tony Dungee tweeted he would donate
five thousand dollars to help move the statue from its
spot in downtown Tampa. This is a day after the commissioners,
in a vote gave the fundraisers a month to collect
about a hundred forty thou dollars. They're part of what's
needed to relocate the monument to Florida. Well, we talked
(28:54):
about this yesterday with two days ago excuse me with
Nick right, um, and and I we died and talking
about enough with Clay Travis. I don't I don't understand
how these how these statues were a good idea to
begin with. I really don't a lot of things that
weren't a good Um, look at all the games we
(29:16):
played as kids, lawn darts and all of I mean
that would never happen now, um, I, but your heads broke.
The problem becomes what is the where where? Where is
the line drawn? Like if we all agree, like yeah,
commemorating Confederate soldiers. And by the way, it's a the
(29:36):
statue in question Tampa has one Confederate soldier marching into battle,
another one coming back from battle. And I don't know,
like if there's a symbolic meeting to it. Um. I
do know that the South really just has a bet.
They're like Seahawk fans from the Super Bowl against the Steelers, Right,
they have a tough time excepting that they actually lost.
(30:00):
I mean right, they're just are They're just like, dude,
you guys lost the Confederate you lost the Civil War.
And the country is better for it, yes, but like you,
the country is better for it, Oh, no question. I
don't know if we were better for having fought a
war against each other. We're better for for the for
(30:24):
the results, but the process maybe less. My My point
is like if you look back on Jefferson, Washington, Lincoln, like,
it's it's not all fluff, it's not all not all
peaches and cream and roses and whatever. And I just
got to be very cautious about the idea of summarily
(30:46):
taking down things which are demarcations of history. Um, because
when you know what what statue is actually worth. Again,
this is why I'm not a big statue guy. It's
one of the things in my religion. Like, right, we
don't pray to false gods, like shock is getting a
statue outside of Staples. Here's the best sports analogy I
can give to it, Like, all right, Shack asked out,
(31:10):
asked to be, and demanded actually to be, actually wanted
a bigger contract and got himself traded from the Lakers.
Like all right, maybe that doesn't cost you to not
get a statue, but he did play for the Celtics, right,
Like what is the guy like are we really I
know that Kobe asked to be traded, was not traded,
but Kobe never would never has played for this. You
(31:31):
can't play for the Celtics. That's ultimate sacrilege. So I
don't know. My My point is, like, I'm cool taking
down stupid statues of Confederate generals and war heroes. They lost,
they were on the wrong side of history, Like I
I didn't know. I don't understand why they exist to
begin with. I'm just wondering, allowed, Hey, uh, what about
(31:53):
some of the victorious generals who weren't who who many
of their actions weren't the most honorable. Some employed slaves um,
some presidents and president impregnated their slaves. Like there's there's
bad stories about supposedly good people out there who have
been commitmarated historically. Do we take down all notes of
(32:16):
history and do we only have history of things that
we perceived to be good? And can there be good
people who were part of bad things. It's a very
It's a much more complex thing than simply tag it
down today. Today's conclusion is obviously, Duck's not gonna be
visiting the Jefferson memorial. I like the Jefferson memorial, right,
but I'm also keen on who Thomas Jefferson was. That
(32:41):
was Scott leads Sack right, Like I'm not like the
only one who's out there going like wait a second,
there's like more to it and more to it than that.
Uh yeah, I don't. I just don't understand, Like who's
who thought? And I again again it was different times,
like who in the statue is up? Like, hey, you
(33:02):
know what need to do? We need to get a
statue some confederate or heroes? Like, uh, didn't we lose
that one? Can we lose that one? I don't get it.
I don't I don't get it. Count me is the
guy who doesn't get it. The Dodgers continue to do
(33:26):
something really really remarkable, but why it's playing with absolute fire.
I'll share it with you. Next, what True Car? You
can find out what other people in your area paid
for the same car you're looking for, new or used.
Visit True Car to enjoy more confident car buying experience.
Doug Olive Show, Fox Sports Radio. Um, I don't know
(33:50):
how much you paid. Like, look, here's one of the
weird things about being in Los Angeles is right now,
like you're waiting on two NFL teams to kick off.
Yesterday we were down live at Chargers camp. We've been
to Rams camp as well. You're waiting for USC and
u c l A season to kick off. They both
have possible top five picks at quarterback, Sam Donald and
(34:13):
Josh Rosen, the chosen Rosen. You're waiting for uh A
Lonzo Ball to play his first NBA game in October
like you're just kind of waiting, and you're waiting for
the baseball playoffs because that will actually give you the
first chance to see the Dodgers play live at home,
because it's so hard to get the Dodgers channel. See
(34:37):
a lot of times you have to react to other
people's reaction of the Dodgers or be out at a
restaurant or bar. That gets it. But the Bias just
hit a home run that the Cubs were down. I
think they were down nine nothings, down nine six not
a good pitching in Cincinnati, and then play at home. Well,
Bias headed hen't even look, he didn't even look. He
(35:00):
crushed that baseball. Um, so you can't you see the Dodgers,
but the Dodgers. This is how the Dodgers game ended
last night. Queen Glands, one of the left center peel
f hit four sight scores. Now here comes four and
then he will score. The Dodgers have walked off with
(35:22):
the wind. Queen the hero tonight the Dodgers on this
historic Runalds There's are now fifty and nine since the
seventh of June, and the Dodgers look three in the
bottom of the ninth beat the White Sox five to four.
It's it's crazy. There was it thirty and four in
(35:44):
the last thirty four home games. It's their tenth walk
off win of the season. Ten ten yet another comeback.
Uh now, look at the White Sox had lost twenty
seven of thirty five, including fourteen the last sixteen road games,
so the fact that it happened to the White Sox
(36:06):
shouldn't be a surprise. But it is their thirty eight
comeback win of two thousand seventeen. Right now, what we've
learned about baseball over time is what wins in the playoffs.
R Everybody says we're pitching, defense, timely hitting, But the
truth is what wins is starting. Pitching has to be decent.
You've got to have a really good bullpen. I mean
(36:29):
the the Indians. Think about how the Indians got to
the World Series and nearly won the World Series in
spite of the fact that they didn't have only two
of their top three starters. They did so because the
bullpen was unbelievable, just unbelievable. And I'm not here to
take shots at the Dodgers bullpen, more to point out
(36:53):
that facing the wrong team at the wrong time or
the wrong a legit bullpen it in the playoffs, come
back wins. It's look, it shows um, it shows kind
of their toughness. It shows that this is a special season.
(37:15):
It's really an amazing thing. All right, But the best
bullpens in baseball. Cubs still have a very good bullpen,
Arizona has a very good bullpen. St. Louis has a
very good bullpen, And these are teams they likely could
face in the playoffs. The best thing they have going
for him is the Washington Nationals have the twenty nine
best bullpen e r A in all of baseball, right,
(37:38):
and the Gnats are the one team if Bryce Harper returns,
they're like and they get Steven Strasser back and're like, Wow,
they got great starting pitching. But what could you give
me the hebe gebis is thirty eight comeback win sounds great,
feels great. The emotion of it, like I don't know
how they keep doing it, and they're doing without drink.
(38:00):
It's also doing on that Clayton Kershaw, but that that
feels like a rescipe playing with fire, right, It feels
like you're playing with fire just a little bit. All right,
Christoper sorry, joins us. Up coming next, up coming at
the twenty after the hour. I want to get his
(38:22):
thoughts on my kind of philosophy, if you will, about
about where we are with Lebron James, what he's telling
us without telling us. But up coming next. Why you
never play the kid just because people yelled to play
the kid. We're working here on the second and third
weeks of preseason games, depending on team, and everybody's yelling
(38:45):
play the young guy. Why you shouldn't. Next in the
Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. M hm, Doug Gottliep Show,
Fuck Sports Radio, m hm m m m mm hmmm.
We have preseason football games tonight. Don't Buffalo taken on Philadelphia,
(39:11):
Baltimore taken on My Emmy. That will be give us
our first chance likely to see j Cutler and uh
Tampa Bay taken on Jacksonville and it's up. It's fascinating
to me on how you you watch, you watch these
teams and you wonder and then of course we have
more preseason games uh to come uh in the in
(39:32):
the coming days. Friday, it's the Vikings taken on the Seahawks.
I saw the Seahawks. The ones looked okay. Uh, it
showed they have a depth of talent. Their backups were
far better than the Chargers backups. A lot of turnovers.
Let do it. I think it was a thirty eight
seventeen win against the Chargers Vikings. Of course this is
season two for Sam Bradford as their starting quarterback. We'll
(39:53):
see the Panthers on Saturday take on the Titans, the
Chiefs take on the Bengals, the Colts take on the Cowboys,
Packers and Redskins, Jets and Lions, Patriots in Texas. While
we get some good stuff, but it's it's always um um.
It's always interesting to me on how we have this
(40:14):
need to rush processes, right, we just we're very Are
you a patient person or impatient person? And I'll be
honest with you I'm incredibly impatient. What's crazy about my
level of impatience is I'm also a little bit of
a procrastinate. Right, So while I have patients, I have
(40:39):
no patience. I expect other people to have patients with me,
and then that and but but here's where I think
I differ from other people. I'll be honest with you, Right, Um,
I paid my My wife has always set up all
of the direct bill payments whatever for cars and houses
(40:59):
and things like that. And I told her when we moved,
I like, I'll take care of the car. My car payment,
I'll take care of and she looked at me with
that look of a woman who's known me for for
nearly two decades, with the sure you will. And so
my car bill is due on the last month. On
(41:20):
the actual is when I paid the bill. I had
to call in and pay the bill. And so it
was sitting on the countertop, and it had a little
post note like you said you'd handle it. And so
last night, like eleven thirty at night, I knew nothing
about routing numbers, like I don't know any of this stuff,
Like I haven't read a check any but lets me
wrote a check. So I had to go and get
(41:41):
the check book. Honey, where's that check buck? Anyway, So
I set up the direct payment and I got so
if you look at the calendar, yesterday was the sixteenth,
so somewhere sixteen seventeen, depending on it his east coast
to west coast. Whatever, I got it done, pretty happy
with myself. My point, though, is that I'm the good
kind of procrastinator. The bad kind procrastinator is the one
that says I'm not a procrastinator, but is a procrastinator.
(42:03):
I'm the good guy. I'm a procrastinator, and yet I
have no patience. I do. I have no patience. Um,
I go to get my wife's Starbucks every morning, eight
years in a row. I've got my wife star Breaks
every single morning, same drink. I don't know I vary
my drinks. She doesn't, but I uh. Two days ago
(42:25):
went to the drive through near my house and the
line was so long that I mobile ordered this morning.
And even though I mobile ordered and it came rather quickly,
I was still a little miffed. I'm over ordered and
it's not ready the second I walked in the door.
Why because I have no presents. No I want things
now like we have well have we got internet in
(42:47):
our internet? The fiber hasn't been laid in the area
just yet. And in that wireless that Fifi ain't that fast.
And every all my my own, all my kids are complaining,
like Dad, the wife, I can't down that stuff, like
we don't we remember when we had dial up. My
kids don't remember we had dial up internet, but before
(43:07):
we had WiFi and you had to plug into something.
But now nobody remembers that. Not my house, not a
single soul. Why no one has any paces And so
whether it's Mitch r. Bisky or or or a pat
my home like my homes. To me, there is this
desire for people. Kash Warberg just hit a home run.
That Shoarber just run nine seven. Now I can't see
(43:31):
the inning. My my eyes are not that good. Bottom five.
The Reds were up nine nothing, it's down nine seven.
This is one of those I feel like I know
how it ends, right, Like I know how this movie
is gonna end. This is like a Rambo movie. You
know sevest salone is going to survive. I just don't
know how many people are gonna be killed in the process,
(43:52):
Like the Cubs are going to win this game. I
just don't know what the final score will be. Shure,
it's just hit a bomb out to left center as
nine nothing is now nine seven Chicago in Chicago, bottom five.
There's this desire for people like Look, we all know
that Alex Smith's ceiling is the playoffs just a limitation.
(44:14):
Now we all should should remember in San Francisco, he
took him to the NFC Championship game and played well,
if not for Kyle Williams. I'm just saying, was Kyle
Williams fumbling twice in that NFCY Championship game against the Saints.
One Saints don't go to the Super Bowl, and two
Alex Smith does that said, we we pretty well know
now there's some limitations in what you're going to get
(44:37):
from Alex Smith, and the ceiling could possibly be higher.
Is higher, probably with Mahomes because he's got it just
a canon, just a howitzer. He could make throws that
five people in the NFL can make. But he's not
close to being ready, not close. And if you rush
(44:58):
the process, when you get into the live bullets of
an NFL game, you can continue to reinforce bad habits
because you have what's called game slippage, and you can
hurt a guy's confidence. Let's talk about game slippage for
for for a second. It's funny. You're watching the Cubs
and Jason Hayward is the prime example of that. The
(45:20):
big story with Hayward. When Hayward signed his contract going
back two off seasons ago, somebody in baseball told me
something really really smart. The best thing that could ever
he could ever do was sign that in Chicago, because
the truth is that Jason Hayward is an eight hole hitter,
maybe maybe seven in the bad lineup. But the money
(45:40):
that the Red that the Cardinals were offering him was
middle of the lineup money. And he will never be
a middle of the lineup hitter. He's just not a
good enough hitter to be in the middle of the lineup.
But you can sign for a hundred and fifty million
or whatever, D thirty two million, whatever and be an
eight hole hitter for the Cubs because they have enough
(46:01):
other meat in the order. But anyone who's watched him
and knows anything about baseball tell you that the exception
is the years in which he hits to seventy. The
rule is yesh yesh, right, that's the rule. He got
a great arm, he's a good dude. He's hitting two
(46:22):
fifty two on base thirty one percent of the time,
and he makes a ton of money. Ton of money.
You look at his on base and, uh, this is
this year is the second lowest of his career. Last
year was the lowest. But he's basically, you know what,
his numbers to sixty one on base thirty four percent
(46:43):
of the time. You know he's gonna hit you with
the one year he hit twenty seven home runs in Atlanta,
most years he's gonna hit you fifteen to eighteen home runs.
Like He's a good dude, a good fielder, and a
good bottom of the order bat if the rest of
your bat or order is really really good. But Heyward
(47:03):
changed his swing in the office season. The problem with
change your swing in the office season is you always
have that game slippage and you regress towards the mean
of what your swing is when you get into the
regular season because there's not enough time to really refine
during the off season exactly what you want to do.
Same with Mahomes in Kansas City, the same with Robinski
(47:24):
in Chicago. Like, don't rush this thing. Let them thoroughly develop.
The reason Dac was able to evolve and mature on
the job was he had a great offenseive line, a
great running game, was surrounded by great skilled position players.
That is a one and a hundred shot. Mostly teams
do not have that. In other words, I know we're
(47:47):
gonna get caught up in how good the young guys
playing the preseason. Deshaun Watson, same thing, But give your
give your quarterback, and give your team the strongest likelihood
of success and eliminate the likelihood of game slippage by
allowing them to evolve and get what it's like to
be on the job, to watch for a couple of games,
(48:11):
make it obvious that they're the better quarterback, be able
to see more than just half the field. Cubs just
scored another run. It's nine to eight. Now, what did
I say. I've seen this movie. I know how it ends.
Cubs will probably end up winning like twelve to ten.
(48:31):
You've been to Wrigley. Roma's just the outside. I never
when we went. No, No, I mean technically you've been
to Wrigley. You haven't been in regul What was your
impression of the outside. It was wonderful. What you just
you were in Chicago and it was outside, it was
(48:53):
off season, just like went by, like there's Wrigley Field,
Big Ben, Parliament kids. Right. Yeah, they took us to
Soldier Field, Wrigley Field, and Chimiskey Park, but nobody was
playing a game, and any of them sounds like a
great tour? Did Was that? The was that? The uh?
Was that the chief Tour? What? What? What tour? It
wasn't the tour. It was just we were there for
(49:14):
It was basket college basketball season for a Division three
and I was out there for college for playoffs and
there was no baseball and no and if there was football,
we weren't there on a Sunday. So I don't remember
if they're if the Bears were playing at all. Yon
Gums just hit a two run home run off the
Minnesota Twins. Remember that's Indians Twins. Indians first place by
(49:35):
five and a half games over the Royals Twins right
there in the thick of the wild card hunt, but
this one being played in Minnesota. Gomes got all of
that one to left center. We'll get you updated half
past the hour upcoming next Chris Brussard will join us. Alright, so, uh,
the story came out yesterday from a long time NBA
(49:58):
reporter and he's gone. What is Broussard heard about Lebron James?
In the likelihood he's in Cleveland next year. You'll find
out as he joins us. Next. With True Car, you
can find out what other people in your area paid
for the same car you're looking for, and on average
save over three m s r p. Whether you're looking
for a new or used car. Visit True Car and
(50:20):
enjoying more confident car buying experience. Doug Outlive Show, Fox
Sports Radio. M M hmmm, Romas, have you decided if
you're buying the fight or now? I will probably buy
(50:43):
the fight? Yes, that that doesn't mean you're going to
buy the fighter. You're uh what was this Saturday night? Right?
Not next Saturday Saturday night? Uh? Probably? How about yes? Yes,
I'm gonna buy the fight? No? Probably? How about that? Hm?
Oh is that not a good answer? No, no, no,
there's there's no there's no wrong answer to it. Right.
Like again, I don't tell people how to pray. I
(51:07):
don't tell people how two two mourn. I don't tell
people how to celebrate, And I sure there's hell. Don't
tell how people how to spend their money. You're spending
your money. The one thing about buying the fight, which
which I think does actually it makes more uh fiscal
(51:28):
sense than possible. I have your bias. Just slid in
the first base and he would have made it had
he just run through the base like you're supposed to.
And I think he got hurt. What are you doing, dude,
baseball one on one, baseball one on one? Why is
he slide ahead first in the first base and Joe
maddening bit barely came out. Joe man, throw and throw
on some LB's there. Huh he has gotten a little
(51:50):
big um. But here's the thing, like, here's the way
in which we we who are on TV are always
going to get jam Like, well, you know, I ain't
gonna pay for TV. Young can pay for cable or whatever.
Come like, you're one, you're gonna pay for it regardless,
right if you could direct TV, go whatever, Like you're
still paying for it. Secondly, do you know how expensive
(52:11):
it is to go to an event? So for the fight,
these are the most expensive tickets I've ever had in boxing.
And somebody's like, hey, Hunter Bucks and you can have
as many people over you want in your house. Everybody
you have ten people. Everybody throws it in ten bucks,
Like all right, it's not Hunterbucks. Is not what a
hunter Bucks was when we were kids. Like a hundred
dollars Chris Brussar joints this Fox Sports? Uh, are you
(52:33):
gonna are you gonna buy the fight? Well, I'm watching
it there, I mean beyond if I didn't have too
for our job. I'm watching it just because I'm a
boxing fan. You watch wait, wait, wait, you're gonna bo
you gonnach bootleg or something. You're like watching you know,
it's like you said, I mean the question. I'll be
(52:54):
with a group of guys, everybody just like you said,
well chip bucks, ten bucks, depending on how any of
us it is. Um, so yeah, I will watch him,
but I must confess if I was by myself, I
would pay the hundred dollars. You watch it? Do you
think we're getting You think we're in for a good fight? No? No,
(53:14):
I think I think I think we're gonna walk away
the same way we always walk away from Floyd Mayweather.
Fight's like damn, but he got me again again. It's
like it's it's he like he's an incredible con man, right,
He's just like, I don't know, I haven't been training
his heart like his dad today was on calling show,
like he even training that hard. He's not as quick
(53:34):
as he used to be. He using smaller gloves. I
don't know. I don't know, Like, yes, you do, you
know the answer to this guy's too good. He's fighting. Yeah.
That that one thing that intrigues because I will say this,
a lot of people are thinking McGregor is gonna just
attack him and you know, making a brawl and making fight.
That's not McGregor's style. I mean, he's a counterpuncher. If
(53:58):
you watch him in UFC, and so you got two counterpunchers. Um.
And if McGregor does get widened, like if he just
starts swinging for the fences and all that, that's when
I think he maybe could get knocked out because you know,
like that's how Floyd knocked out Rickie hadden't um, you know,
(54:19):
he hadn't forced the fight and starts swinging and and
got caught with something he didn't see, and the accumulation
of it over some rounds, you know, led him to
get knocked out or t k O. I could see
that happening. It'd be nice to see that happening, because
you're right, like the Pacao fight was the worst I've
ever seen and this could be very much like it. Um. Okay,
(54:43):
So let's let's get to one of the main thrusts
for having you on, Christos, sorry joining us. Chris Sheridan,
who used to we used to all be colleagues over
at the other place, now does his own thing. He's
broken stories for for years, he said, his story. One
of his sources said, lock deal Lebron. Uh, the relationship
with the owner is so is so dysfunctional that they
(55:06):
cannot co exist. He's gone next year. What have you heard? Well,
I've talked to yet last night after this came out,
and you know, Chris does a good job. But the
people I talked to, very close to Lebron, a few people,
they all shot this down completely. They said it's it's
bogus um that there's no truth to it. Now they're
(55:30):
not guaranteeing that Lebron James is staying in Cleveland, but
they're saying he is. He is only focused on this
season and he you know, he'll make his decision at
the end of the year, what if they win the championship,
you know, you never know what havan when nobody thought
they'd win it two years ago and they did so. Um,
(55:50):
and you look at Lebron's history, he tends to do this.
I mean, he makes his decisions at the end of season.
He's never ruined the season, you know, He's never you know,
even his last year in Cleveland or Miami, he didn't
you know, go into the season with you know, and
talk about leaving and he plays out his contract. So
(56:12):
I think it's all premature. I'm not saying he's definitely staying,
but I believe from talking all these people close to
him that he really hasn't made a decision yet and
he's keeping his options open again. Even when he went
back to Cleveland from Miami. Remember he signed a short
term deal. He's signing a series of short term, one year,
(56:32):
one plus one type deals, so he wants to keep
his options open. So I don't think you can put
any stock into him being one percent gone. Um, I
just don't think that's true. Mellow he k D and
others all play pick up altogether. It appeared on several
people's Instagram, including Mellow's Instagram. Um, why isn't Mellow open
(56:57):
to the idea of joining him in Cleveland? They've always
talked about playing together. This is a possible opportunity. Why
why isn't he open to Cleveland. Yeah, that's a good question, um,
because obviously right now he's talking about Houston. I think
you should be open not only the Cleveland but a
few places. Why not Washington? I mean that's his home area. Um.
(57:20):
I think if you ask, if they could get him
and keep Bradley Bill and John Wall, that'd be a
nice team in the East. I think he'd be really
good in Portland. I actually like that Portland's team with
Mellow better than the Houston team with Mellow, just because
I don't know how Mike D'Antoni would use those three
guys together. Uh in Houston. But as far as Cleveland,
(57:41):
I mean, some could read into that that he thinks
Lebron is gone there they're hint. You know, I talked
on heard today about how you know Lebron would not
sign a long term extension with Cleveland or or you know,
agree to it, and that ended up killing a Kyrie
Irving to feel Knicks trade that would have got Cleveland.
(58:02):
Eric Blitz on Paul George, Um, I think again, it's
Lebron keeping his options open. Others might say he's definitely
out of there, So I get it, and but I
guarantee you if Lebron is leaving Cleveland, he is not
sold Mellows. Not that they're not buddies, but I just
think that's not the way Lebron works. Remember Dwayne Way,
(58:25):
when did he know Lebron was leaving Miami but he
was already gone, Uh ways likely to be bought out right,
That's what Chicago is allowing out there that they're they're
gonna engage on biot talks. Safe to say he goes
there or does he end up in Houston as well?
Like where Where's day? I was talking to somebody last
night about this, and I think there's a good chance
(58:47):
he and something Cleveland. Uh they they this is a
person feel associated with the Calves who thinks he is there.
They he feels good about their chances of getting him
in Cleveland excited about it. Look, if you're the Waine Wade,
I mean, obviously he's got three wings already, unless he
just wants to go and ride out in the sunset
(59:10):
in Miami. Why not go to Cleveland. He's not helping
Houston go to the finals. Um, Cleveland, you're gonna go
to the finals. And look, he's older. I'm not saying
he's not putting them over the top against Golden State.
But that would be interesting. I mean, you talk about
the team with some names when it's older, damaged, beat
up names it Rolls and Wade. But it would be
(59:32):
fun and I'd like to see it. I think there's
a good chance of it happens. Chris brus are joining
us in the Doug Gottlips Show. All right, what about Kyrie?
Where are we with the Kyrie thing? There was talking
about trading to the Knicks, but the Knicks aren't coming
off of persingis like that that's not happened. There's been
talk of of the Celtics has been talking of Phoenix.
That's really as you shared earlier today, like look, he's
(59:54):
only come up with this trade man after he found
out that he might be traded by Cleveland. Are you
fine you to leave me? You know, forget the forget
the I'm fired, I quit that that that that that
sort of thing. Where do you think ultimately he plays
next season. All right, man, it's a great question now.
There obviously there's teams that that love Kyrie. Everybody knows
(01:00:15):
how well he plays. There are some executives I've talked
to who feel like this is this shows that he
really isn't doesn't care about winning. It's more about you know,
doing his thing and getting his numbers and all that.
But most of the guys I've talked to still love
his game and would love to have him. Putting together
a package where you can get him is another question
(01:00:36):
out Dan Gilbert wants the name in return. He wants
some type of sexy name that's gonna help him win
the press conference. Really like a point guard or a
guard of of of Kyrie's stature. Um. You know, the
most probable I think still is Phoenix. Um. They've got bled,
(01:00:58):
so they can give up, you know, do they come
off Josh Jackson. Um. I think that's what it's gonna take.
At the end of the day. Robert Sarverer does want Kyrie. Um.
You know, the front office obviously has a little hesitation
because they don't want to give up the young kids
and stuff. But you know, you have a backcourt of
Kyrie Irvy and Devin Booker. That's pretty good. That's pretty good. So, um,
(01:01:23):
I think if I had to pick a team, I
would probably put Phoenix in front. But at this point,
I don't believe anything's close, and I would not be surprised.
And there's a part of me or wants to lean
towards him starting the season in Cleveland. And I say this,
I've been told that Kyrie and Lebron have not, you know, met,
(01:01:43):
I know there was a report that they met. I'm
told they have not. But Lebron's attitude if if Kyrie
shows up at training camp in Cleveland, I'm told Lebron's
attitude will be, hey, let's throw up the ball and
let's play. You know, you don't get along with coworker
that you have, whether we were at the old Network,
(01:02:03):
whether we're five, you know, you just have disagreements with people,
different personalities. But I'm told that they will be that
Lebron will be open to working it out and playing
together and doing what they can do. So yeah, I
don't think we can rule out that possibility either. Yeah,
I know you hate everybody you work with. I mean,
I just and you've been able to You've been able
to to to succeed. Last thing Christopher Starry joining us. Uh.
(01:02:26):
Last thing is this? Uh. In addition to these shared
and tweet there was an interesting tweet from Rick Buker
who who tweeted out that keep in mind Dan Gilbert
donated seven hund fifty thou dollars to the Trump inauguration.
Now this comes on the back of a crazy weekend
in politics, and with the Charlottesville, with everything that happened
in Charlottesville, and and and the tweets that have come
(01:02:48):
out of Lebron James's Twitter accounts since um is it is? It?
Is it logical to think, among the things, that Lebron
James has reached a breaking point where he can't work
for a guy who supports Donald Trump. I asked some
of le Bron's the guys that last night, and they
(01:03:09):
said no. They said, first of all, uh, according to them,
I haven't Gilbert supported Hillary Clinton UM earlier UM. And
then with Trump being you know, president, or when he's
like he's just he's like justin Bieber, he switched exactly
and so and look, Lebron smart enough to know. I'm
(01:03:30):
sure a lot of a lot of the owners probably
voted for Trump. Now did they donate that type of money,
I don't know, But um, Lebron and his guys are
are various businessmen and they understand that. You know, you
work with different types of people and everybody's not gonna
necessarily agree with you on everything. And his relationship with Gilbert, um,
(01:03:54):
it is what I'm told, it's a cordial business relationship.
They're not hows, they're not buddies, but it's a business relationship.
And let's face it, Dan Gilbert can't do, most likely
can't do or say anything worse than he did when
Lebron first left Cleveland, and yet Lebron James still went
(01:04:18):
back even though Dan Gilbert has always couched it like, yeah,
we both were wrong, he apologized, I apologize. I mean
it's kind of like Donald Trump. You know, both sides
have had you know, we're wrong. No, Dan Gilbert was
more wrong for the way he talked about Lebron James,
and Lebron James still went back there. So Lebron is
(01:04:41):
a smart businessman and I don't think no, I'm sure
he doesn't like you know that that support goes to Trump,
But I don't think that's a factor at all, Um.
I just think it'll be other things that if Lebron leaves,
it won't be because of Gilbert support of Trump. That's
the voice of Christoper Shardi. Can he him on the
weekend on Fox Sports Radio, follow him on Twitter, see
(01:05:03):
him on Fox Sports one. Cbe thanks so much for
joining us. Should you play a rookie quarterback early in
his first season? Well last, Brady Quinn he would know,
of course, works for Fox Sports among other folks, and
he's a former first round draft pick. So tomorrow I'm
gonna be hosting The Herd. You can check me out
on Fox Sports one, The I Heart app uh and
(01:05:23):
of course earlier on Fox Sports Radio. So in my stead,
Jonas Knox is gonna host along with Brady Quinn Fox
UH sports college football analysts course former Notre Dame quarterback uh,
former NFL quarterback for a first round draft pick of
the Cleveland Browns. He joins us now on The Doug
Gottlieb Show. Brady, I'm I'm wondering. I was talking a
little bit earlier this hour about how none of us
(01:05:44):
have we don't have any patience anymore, right Like we
it wasn't enough that we had drive through Starbucks is
now we have to be able to have the mobile
order app like it has to be waiting for us
when we walk into the door. I need my news
and information now, now, now, now. Now, we do the
same thing with quarterbacks. We see them play at a
at a at a very good level in their first
(01:06:06):
preseason game against the two's set game plan, and we
assume they have to start right away. What's what's your
sent just from personal experience? How much time did you need,
for example, to feel comfortable with in an NFL offense. Well,
let me start off by saying everyone's different. You know,
there's some players who I think can expedite the learning
curve or because of what they had at the college level,
(01:06:28):
that might be a little bit easier transition for him.
Calling plays in the huddle, taking a snap from under center,
the simple things that we take for granted that aren't
that easy once you actually have to do it in
a real live scenario, either in practice, preseason or a
regular season game. So that's kind of where it starts
as far as the transition for any quarterback, any player
(01:06:49):
mentally with the offense. And and that's different depending on
the player and depending on their history. Um, you know,
to be honest with it. With a quarterback, I mean, look,
this is gonna sound absurd, but you'd like to see
what they're capable of in their third year playing. Meaning
first year you're learning your offense. You're figuring out exactly
how your guys like to run the route, anticipating the
(01:07:11):
throws when they're coming in and out of their cuts,
and and really understanding having a strong understanding of what
it is you're trying to accomplish on every single concept
on every single play, identifying the mike, the protections, all
the run game. The second year you're really looking at
the weaknesses of the defense, understanding what they're trying to
do to you, what they're trying to take away, how
you can exploit that within your offense. And the third
(01:07:34):
year you're not thinking you're doing anything. You're going out
there and playing the game. And and that's why it's
it is a little bit absurved. Sometimes we rush to
want to see players go in, but I think because
of the way we turn over head coaches, you know,
they're constantly feeling like they have to, you know, figure
out what they have on the roster. They have to
justify you know why a guy sitting or you know,
(01:07:56):
putting a guy in maybe before he's ready. So we
see this all the time now out because of that,
and and people complain about the lack of quarterback development. Well,
I mean we're partially to blame the fans, the media,
everyone involved, because we're the ones clamoring for this young
guy to come in and play when the coaching staff
is trying to tell us he's not ready and he's
only going to subject himself to injury or poor play. Um,
(01:08:18):
yet you know we still give them a hard time
about and still complain about it. That's the voice of
Brady Quinn, who I thought articulated so many points, really
really well right there in the opening stalve. We'll joining
us Doug Gottlieb show Fox Sports radioho co host tomorrow
with Jonas Stocks. You can watch them all season long
on Fox College Football's coverage. UM. I want to get
to your thoughts on some of the college quarterbacks in
(01:08:39):
the second. But we're gonna start to see some more
of these rookies. We've already seen him one week. Deshaun Watson,
Like everybody likes Deshaun Watson because he won a national championship,
and because of how he evolved as a player at Clemson.
But I watched the same game everybody else did. He
was great out of the pocket, struggle a little bit
in the pocket, struggle with some accuracies issues when he
(01:09:00):
went through his progressions like that, he I don't. I
felt like people gave him a past because they like
him so much and want him to be the answer
in Houston, more suddenly looked like the answer. Am I crazy? No,
You're not crazy. I think as much as you talked
about the issue that with our society and patience, we
also try to simplify things very easy. Right, So how
(01:09:23):
do you digest to Shawn Watson having a good first
preseason game? All right, look at the box score. I
see how many yards you threw for his completion percentage,
the fact that he would accounted for a touchdown running
the football, and you immediately say that guy should start
he had a great game. Well, it's not that simple.
I think when you, you know, look at the film
and you watched what he did. You know a lot
(01:09:43):
of the things that he excelled at in that first
preseason game were the same things we saw him do
at Clemson is showing off his athletic ability as ability
to run. We know we can do that. The issue
in the NFL level is if he does that too much,
he's gonna get hurt. I mean, name one athletic mobile
quarterback that's ever been able to play throughout their entire
ennefer of L career and not get injured. At some point,
(01:10:05):
I have to keep him from starting and playing in games.
So we saw the shaw DeShawn Watson do that. That's great,
but we already know he can do that. We need
to see him play more from the pocket. Did he
miss some throws? Yes, and that's gonna happen early on,
I think in his career. I mean, I don't think.
I'm not trying to take a knock at him for
how he played. I thought he did exactly what he
was supposed to do in his first you know, playing
(01:10:26):
experience in a live game scenario in preseason, and you
hope that he continually gets better, but he definitely needs to, uh,
you know, learn how to anticipate better from the pocket.
Makes some of those throws in windows that really weren't
that tight. I mean, if he's gonna be the starting
quarterback to the Houston Texans, and this team is as
good as we've seen in years past. When in the
NFC South the last two years, he's gonna be playing
(01:10:46):
the playoffs and then there's gonna be much much tighter windows,
much much better cornerbacks and defenses that he's gonna have
to face, and so those throws are not gonna come easy.
Brady Queen joining us, All right, what about Chicago? Um,
you know they I gotta mess in their hands Glennon.
Glennon doesn't seem to have a ton of confidence. You
gotta coach is like a lame duck coach. And you
(01:11:07):
got mitche Mitchell Trobiscue comes in and did play well,
played well on the move, play well in the pocket,
and too many people believed to be more pro ready
than some of the others. What's your assessment of the
Chicago situation? Yeah, it's odd. I mean it started when
you know, you signed Glennon to the deal you signed
him to where it really pays him to be your
franchise quarterback for a year, and then but then you
(01:11:29):
trade up and take a quarterback second overall in the draft.
I know they only moved up one spot, but still
you gave up something to go get him, and taking
him that high leads you to believe that, you know,
he is definitely their future. And I'm sure if Glennon
doesn't play well, which he didn't have a great outing,
we'll see how Week two goes. There's going to continually
be pressure to put Mitchell Trobiskie in, whether he's ready
(01:11:50):
or not now based on his first game. Again, much
like Deshaun Watson did exactly what you'd hope, you know,
I hoped you would do expected him to do. But
the other thing I think we we still to realize
is when a lot of times these rookies are going in,
they're going in either as the second or third string quarterback,
which means they're playing against guys that largely will not
be on a NFL roster come the regular season. So
you'd like to see him against the ones you'd like
(01:12:11):
to see him against, you know, more pressure, more schemes
that you're gonna see in the course of a season
to get a realistic look at it. Um, you know,
I think Mitchell Trobinsky will end up being the starting quarterback.
I's not at the beginning of the season at some
point very soon after. And it's not a knock on
Mike Glennon. It's just that's the position I think the
Bears are in, and Mitchell Trobinsky seems to be, you know,
(01:12:32):
ready or at least close to where Mike Lennon is
with this offense, since really both quarterbacks are learning this offense,
since Glennon just got here this offseason and they just
drafted Trabinsky, the biggest question is who's he throwing to him?
He's gonna step up form a wide receiver. You know.
Up front, they've got a great interior offensive line that
the tackles canna be a little more worrisome. So that's
more my concern with Trabinsky is is gonna be able
(01:12:54):
to play the way he's capable of with what they
have out around them. Let me let me quickly turn
to Notre Dame. Of course, the former Note Dame quarterback.
Fox college football analyst Brady Quinn joins us you hear
him tomorrow on this show. Co hosting with Jonas Knocks,
Brian Kelly said that, look, he he had a fundraise
and that's one of the things it took his He
was more CEO last year than he wanted to be.
(01:13:14):
It took his attention away from the team, and that's
one of the reasons that they struggled so mightily. Uh
you buying that, Well, that's one of the halts you
have to where I think as the head coach at
Notre Dame, Um, I mean as far as how that
impacted his job, the job he did as a head coach.
I mean maybe they are up going four and eight m.
I'm sure there's a bunch of things, not just that
(01:13:35):
that led to it, um, And I think that's maybe
why to you you hire a new offensive coordinator, you
hire a new defensive coordinator because you know, now if
that's an issue moving forward, you've got two other people
that are really responsible for the offense and defense. You
can handle some of those duties. If that is, you know,
part of the requirement of being the head coach and
under Dame. So look, I mean for me that maybe
(01:13:56):
it played a factor. I mean, who knows, I've never
been the head coach and Notre Dame. Although maybe maybe Doug,
if you like, if you kind of put that out
there enough, like we can work that in there one
day where I can go back. But until that point
in time. I mean, it's kind of tough to tell
what all the responsibilities are on the head coach and
netre dame versus anywhere else, or if they're you know,
all the same. All right, let me let me ask
you this. Two years ago before, they just had mass
(01:14:18):
hostale injuries, right Like, they beat Texas like that, looked
like a team that could win the whole thing. And
they had all these injuries. Uh, Jalen Smith didn't get
hit to the end of the year, but I mean,
you name it, they had. They had injuries and important positions.
How far away are they from that point talent wise? Uh,
from two years ago to now? It's tough to tell
(01:14:41):
because I think there is count on the roster. The
hard thing is is much like we're talking about with
you know, the rookie quarterbacks, is the learning tour for everyone.
I mean you're talking about a team that has new
scheme on both sides of the football, and you can
simplify it as much as you want. The problem is,
I think there's some really good, you know, coaches in
college a ball They're gonna exploit it. If you become
(01:15:02):
too simple or if you've got a weak link they're
gonna find it and they're gonna exploit that. So that's
one of the issues that I think Notre Dame faces
is they've got Georgia week two, and by the way,
Temple is not a push over either given their recent
track record of success. But they've got Temple and then
Georgia at home, so they're gonna be tested early. And
they're a team that it's like, you have a preseason
(01:15:22):
to figure out your offense and defense and what it
looks like in a real live game scenario you've got
to figure out right away. And and they're also breaking
in a first time starting quarterback in Brandon Winbush who's
got very little experience. So there's a lot of things
that I think are kind of going against them as
far as how close they can be to get back
to a national championship in two thousand and twelve or
(01:15:43):
even having some of the success they had two years
ago when they went to a New Year's six game.
But you know, maybe they'll surprise you. There's always teams
that do in college football. Can't wait to hear you
tomorrow on this show. I'll be listening, so will everybody else.
Brady Quinn, you can watch him on Fox covering college
football all season long. Brady, great stuff. Thanks so much
for Joe this. Thanks for having me on. Doug. All right,
I'll talk. I'll talk more about that young college quarterbacks
(01:16:05):
upcoming later on in the show. It's Doug Gotlib Show,
Fox Sports Radio. Uh, maybe I was wrong at how
this movie ends. I'll share it with you next. Broadcasting
live from the studios of Fox Sports Radio, here's Doug Gottlieb.
What True Car. You can find out what other people
in your area paid for the same car you're looking for,
(01:16:27):
new or used. Visit True Car to enjoy more confident
car buying experience. Doug Gotlib Show, Fox Sports Radio. Is
still time left, uh, still innings left to be played.
But I did predict that the Cubs essentially would come
back and beat the Reds. The Reds up nine nothing
and the Cubs sorry to school runs and became obvious.
(01:16:50):
It was nine nine. Now it's eleven to nine, eleven
to nine, as the Cincinnati Reds have re taken the lead.
Baseball has this kind of weird thing to which they
kind of create this fake drama that I guess it's
actually more real drama, right, We've seen wild card teams
get to the World and win the World Series before,
(01:17:10):
and so, uh, you know, it's it's interesting on how
we look at Bud see right, because Seely created this
idea which came into fruition that the All Star Game
would matter for home field advantage, and because he was
the commissioner during the steroid era, that he was a
(01:17:31):
bad commissioner. When I look inter League playing, and I
think they've overdone it with inter League played, where now
there's fifteen and fifteen there's always in the e league series.
I don't like that. I used to like when they
would have inter League Weekend. I thought that was cool. Um,
but he also started the wild card and then had
the additional wild Card game right the playing game, if
you will, the other wild card team, and all of
(01:17:53):
those have been wins. Think about how much more interesting
baseball is now because of that additional wild card game.
Super super interesting. Eric Davis is gonna join us, uh
upcoming next hour. I want to ask him about this
weird situation with NFL players. Either you speak out against
(01:18:14):
the president or you don't, and if you don't, you
get called out for not speaking up. That's next Doug
Olive Show, Fox Sports Radio. I am going to try.
I'm going to try to have a reasonable conversation about
(01:18:35):
politics and sports. I know, I know. I'm not gonna
be trying to be the one who wins the argument, right.
I'm not gonna be the first guy ever to win
the abortion argument. Nobody wins that argument. I'm just not.
But I'm gonna be trying to be the guy who
wins this argument or makes this argument smarter. Kevin Durant
is quoted in a a recently released A released article
(01:18:56):
in which Chris Haynes interviewed him are sayings. Haynes asked
if k D will visit Donald Trump at the White House. Nah,
I won't do that. I don't respect who's in office
right now. I don't agree with what he agrees with.
So my voice is going to be heard by not
(01:19:17):
doing that. That's just me personally. But if I know
my guys well enough, they'll all agree with me. That's
the end sentence to me, That really really strikes a
chord of negativity. That's not needed. Quote. I just want
to sit back and analyze everything and gather my thoughts.
I wanted to say something immediately but I definitely want
(01:19:39):
my voice to uh want to be the voice of
where I came from the people who have come from
my neighborhood and deal with oppression. I'm representing a lot
of people as far as what's going on the country.
For one, as an athlete, you have to commend Colin Kaepernick,
Lebron James CP three, Dwyane Wade for starting a conversation
last year. Russell Westbrook also said something in his speech.
(01:20:01):
A lot of guys with platforms have have drove conversations
in a good direction, and what's going on in Charlottesville
is unfathomable. A white supremacist rally protesting the removal of
Roberty Lee stat she was organized in Charlottesville. Last week.
Of course, Heather Higher, thirty two was tragically killed when
(01:20:21):
a car driven allegedly by James Alex Fields Jr. Plowed
into a crowd of of protesters or anti protesters protesters
By now, I think you know the story, um, I
feel like Durant asked as he played if Trump has
played a role in the escalation of racial tensions in
(01:20:43):
America and the public rise of white supremacists, He's definitely
driving driving it I feel ever since he got into office,
or ever since he ran for presidency, our country has
been divided. And it's not a coincidence. When Barack Obama
was in office, things were looking up. We had so
much hope in our mere back where I came from,
because we had a black president that was our first.
(01:21:04):
So to see where we are now, it just felt
like we took a turn for the worst man. And
it all comes from who's who's in the administration. It
comes from the top leadership trickles down to the rest
of us. There's some really smart comments in it, and
I'm not gonna read every single one of them, but
I'm actually really bothered by this. He said he's not
going to the White House. Totally his right, but he
said that's just me personally. But if I know my
(01:21:25):
guys well enough, they'll all agree with me. This, to
me is inherently part of the problem. This is where
people will say the left has gone right right the
left um and if you want to laberal liberals have
often said to themselves, look, we are the party of acceptance,
Like give me your tired, your week, your poor, you
(01:21:46):
wretched masses, gay, straight, black, white, mixed race Mexican Asian
don't care. Right, we are the party of everybody. They
are the exclusive club. The right is seen as white,
wealthy Republicans, right store owners versus store workers. That's what
(01:22:06):
it's seen as. That's the that's the divide. And there
is some some reality to that perception, but not all,
especially the part where the left is open right the
same thing that you are that you could conclude right
wingers were guilty of, which is being close minded towards
(01:22:28):
gays and lesbians, towards people of other races and other cultures.
Isn't that kind of what Kevin Durant just said. That's
just me personally, But I know my guy's well enough
there with me. In other words, if you don't do
what I do, then we don't think alike. And I
don't understand you. If if I was if I was
(01:22:53):
on a championship team right now and they said, are
you going to the White House, my first inclination, in
all honesty would be well, I don't know if I go,
And mostly is because my wife would be hot, right,
Like I've tried to remain a political to it, because
I do actually think there's some interesting parts to each
side and I don't want to be part of this. Uh.
(01:23:16):
I've called it the theory of the evolution. Right, that's
we're we're devolving, is what we're doing. Right, we were
and that's a little bit of what k D saying.
We were evolving and now we're kind of regressing. Nobody
actually wants that, or at least I don't know any
smart person who wants that. But we want to smartly evolve.
(01:23:37):
We want to take all thoughts and all perspectives. So
I don't know if I go, But the conversation I
would have with my wife would be this, and this
is the one that somebody should have with Kevin Durant
is he's right. He's going to be given a platform
and be able to speak out and his voice will
be heard because he's the Finals MVP and a former
(01:23:58):
League MVP who's choosing not to attend White House. And
here's what I will absolutely commend him. He's not saying
it's for any other reason than Trump. A lot of
these guys like man, I had a I was double
booked in a commitment thing like Tom Brady did that
this this pastime, right Tom Brady is like, you know,
I had I was double booked. I could. I had
supposed to. I had a family thing. I had to
be I had to do right. Like how soft are
(01:24:21):
you there to where you can't just go? Like you
know what, I just I just didn't want to go.
I didn't want to go. Been before I didn't want
to go. Instead, they do the double At least I'll
give kd credit because Katie is going like, look, I
don't want to go, and here's what I don't want
to go. Okay. My point would be your your best
opportunity to get into a conversation, for example, with the
(01:24:43):
president is to go, hey, I'll go, but I want
five minutes with the guy. I'll go, but I want
ten minutes to sit down and tell him when I
think about some of the things that I've been hearing.
You're never going to get that opportunity if you have
a closed minded approach, which, by the way, the closed
minded is of I'm not even gonna talk to or
(01:25:05):
or try and leverage my appearance with a conversation. Is
the same closed mindedness that you accuse the other side
of having. Does that makes sense? That makes sense? Like, look,
I hear the rhetoric at of Washington's awful. I will
point out that there have been white supremacists throughout our history.
Trust me, man, I'm Jewish, Like I don't like anybody
(01:25:28):
flash in the swastika and saying their Nazis and somehow
champion the Nazi movement. But I'm also well aware that
these people have existed in limited numbers around the country
for years. The difference is that because of social media,
because of the media, because the counter protest, and because
of how poorly everything was hailed and some people showed
up arms armed, all of a sudden, it's spiraled completely
(01:25:51):
out of control. And then what has been said since
has missed the marked time and again of trying to
make everybody calm down and understand exactly what was supposed
to take place, why they had the right to protest,
as despicable and disgusting as it is uh to celebrate
certain movements, that that's part of our culture, it's part
(01:26:14):
of our country. Sadly, like we can act like this
has never happened, like, yeah, it has. There are there
are like this David Duke character has been around before. Dude,
it's been around. He wasn't a point, he hadn't been
important for twenty years, Like, don't make him important. He
(01:26:35):
wants to go and have him. Who cares? I don't.
I don't care. But apparently, and this has happened. Des
Bryan we talked about yesterday. Des Bryant says something where
he's like, I don't want to get into it. Des
Brian gets crushed on Twitter. Hugh Jackson actually spoke about
it at his press conference two days ago, got ripped
by Shannon Sharp. Now today he had another press conference
(01:26:56):
where he kind of backtracked and said, well, I was
I was miss orde was misunderstood, like, no, you weren't. You.
You just you want to coach a football game. You
need to win football games in order to keep your job.
I completely understand. But it's interesting that we started with
the perception that one side was closed minded, the other
(01:27:19):
side was open, and yet the supposedly open minded side
is closed off to any idea that anybody, even from
friendly fire same side, can have a conversation or can
have a perceptive perspective that is different than that's bad.
I am only saying that's bad. Crazy time, Crazy time,
(01:27:46):
Michael Bennett, do we have the Michael Bennett cut? Michael
Bennett had something really interesting to say. Michael Bennett, of
course neil for the national anthem, And as I told
you to start the week, I think this actually helps
the NFL's NFL keeping cap out of the league because
they can say, like, look, we're not getting rid of
Michael Bennett. He wants to kneel, fine, Seahawks allowing him
(01:28:08):
to kneel fine. Think listen to what Michael Bennett said
about how this can take the next step in the
NFL where everything that's been going on in the last
couple of months, and especially after the last couple of
days sitting everything in Virginia and someone's going on out
there and earn today in Seattle. Um, I just wanted
to be able to use my platform and to be
(01:28:31):
able to continues to speak on in just uh. He
also said that that if in order for the NFL
to to our fans to sit up and pay attention,
they needed some white players to kneel before the national ende.
And again the problem with that is you're like, look,
(01:28:53):
I just you're a white NFL player, Like, look, I'm
not pro Nazi, I'm not pro white supremacist, but I
also don't want to be perceived as somebody who is
protesting the country or you know, and obviously the teams
don't want this attention and some fans don't. You sit
there and you say to yourself, are we putting? Now?
(01:29:15):
Is Michael Bennett putting white players in a position which
if I don't kneel before the flag? Am I saying
I agree with what's going on? I'm not the only
thing that says you agree with what's going on is
if you say I agree what's going on, you understand.
And the only way you say I disagree and I
(01:29:36):
vehemently disagree is union fourth like or you can say
I disagree with it. I just don't think that's the
right platform. But not doing anything is not doing anything.
You're allowed to be Switzerland in this thing, aren't you do?
You have to take a side in every argument, like
the only people who have to take a side in
every argument are skipping Shannon and uh Is. It's even
(01:30:00):
a and uh Max right like those they have to
take a side. I know. Yeah, By the way, just
so you know how those shows work. There are stories,
there are arguments, there are debates which are not brought
up on air. Why because we don't have a debate,
and I want to. That's the crazy thing about Shannon
(01:30:20):
calling out Hugh Jackson is Shannon knows that not every
topic is to be debated. Shannon went at him. Here's
I'm gonna do. Um Uh. Lawrence Williams says, sad thing is,
why are we trying to sanitize history? Civilians killing cops
(01:30:42):
has overlooked, but Black Lives Matter tolerates black on black murders. Again,
I don't think we're trying to sanitize this, but I
think both sides try and kind of sanitize history. I
don't know how how Roberty Lee statues existed. Have you
guys the reason they're gonna take down the statue in Tampa.
Have you guys seen the inscription on the Tampa statue. Okay,
(01:31:07):
I mean, look, if you see the inscription, you'll you'll
understand exactly why they're taking it down. Um. The statue
in Tampa says, it's it's the to honor the bravery
of of the soldiers of the Confederacy, right it says, Uh,
(01:31:28):
this statue is to honor to the honor and courage
of the patriots of the Confederates states. Uh. Confederate States
of America, etcetera, etcetera, recognizing this monument does not reflect
the values of our community. Now it doesn't. It says, um,
(01:31:49):
this monument is dedicated by the Tampa Chapter. Blah blah
blah blah blah. It's to honor the courage of the
patriots of the Confederate States of America. Like it's kind
of neutral, but it's not because the Confederate States of
America no longer exist. I just don't know how it
went up to begin with. Like, who thought that was
(01:32:11):
a good idea? Well, we need to honor their courage.
It was courageous, it was also stupid. We'll ask Eric Davis,
he'll join us. He'll try and make some sense out
of all this stuff. Seems senseless. And I'm somebody who's
usually politically active, but it's turning me a political because
you simply can't have a conversation with people. There isn't
(01:32:33):
just one side of a discussion, even if you disagree
vehmili with the other side. That's up coming next broadcasting
Live with True Car. You can find out what other
(01:33:00):
people in your area paid for the same car you're
looking for, and on average, save over three thousand m
s r P. Whether you're looking for a new or
use car, visit True Car and enjoying more confident car
buying experience. Doug gottlim Show, Fox Sports Radio. Eric Davis
got better hair than Main, better looking the Main. He's
more accomplished me. Outside of that, I got him on
(01:33:20):
several other fronts. You can see him on Speak for Yourself.
He's a super Bowl champion. You can follow him on
Twitter at at Underscore Eric Davis Underscore. He joins us
now on Fox Sports Radio. Um, do I have to
say that I'm anti Trump? Or can I just be?
Can I just be neutral in some of this stuff?
Because the more like now we've got Michael Bennetty, like, yo,
(01:33:42):
we need white guys to take a knee, knee before
the flag. Kevin Durance basically saying like, Hey, I'm not
going to the White House and I don't mind if
I know my guys they're not going either. Like are
we allowed to be a political now or do we
have to take a political side? No, you don't have to. Again,
That's that's what all these guys are talking about, that
everyone should be treated equally, that you that you should
(01:34:04):
be afforded the same rights as every other citizen. So
one of those rights is for you to choose to
stay quiet. You can stay quiet. That's okay, Um, that's
that's what's happening in this is if you don't, if
you haven't picked a side and use there the assumption
is that you are picking a side, and you know
that in itself is not right as well. So don't
(01:34:26):
you don't You don't have to do it. Um. I
when Mike is saying that it would carry more weight
if some of the white guys were doing it, I
think I don't know if it would carry more weight.
I think it would it would change the narrative and
push the conversation in a different direction. I do believe that. Um.
(01:34:46):
But you know, guys have the right to do what
they want to do, just like every black player doesn't
have to necessarily say something. Do something. Doesn't mean that
they don't care. Yeah, I mean, m I thought Shannon
Sharpe called out Hugh Jackson for saying he basically didn't
want to engage in the discussion. Is it different when
you're the leader of men and you're one of a
(01:35:07):
few African American head football coaches, that does that change
in terms of your level responsibility? Uh? Wow, Well this
is he went to the basic, Um, I'm a football
coach and I'm gonna leave it at that, and I
don't want to get into it. Uh. It's it's a
difficult thing because regardless he's he's a black man, and
(01:35:32):
you're you're going to be asked to your opinion on it.
So as a football coach, a football coach wants to
not distraction. He wants to think about football. He wants
to do everything and and keep all all people and
every question about the game, about the team, about the scheme,
and that's what they want to do. They want to
they want to control as much as they possibly can. Uh,
(01:35:54):
this is something that's out of out of a coach's control.
So it makes uncomfortable for for all of them. The
being a being a black man in this country and
his climate, in the position that he's in. He's going
to take criticism for not answering that question. Bill Belichick
wouldn't take the same criticism for not answering that that question.
(01:36:17):
But that's what this is all about. There are certain
things that being black, you see an experience that you
don't see as being being a white male. And that's
just a part of it. So you know, you know
Shannon saying and how he feels. It's one of those things.
Everyone has their opinion on it. Because this right here,
that's what this is about. This is really about, UM,
(01:36:40):
what we're talking about, our feelings on certain issues. UM,
at some point we need to get old, get the
narrative moved over to what the actual facts are and
rules that can be put in place and laws that
can be put in place to help things. That's the
voice of Eric Davis. You can and see him on
(01:37:00):
Speak for Yourself all throughout our Fox Sports one TV shows.
He joins in the Doug Gotlip Show here on Fox
Sports Trail. Let's get to some actual football, shall we
like a right, that's like, that's that's the fun part. Um.
You got these young quarterbacks, and I think Pat Mahomes
might be the most interesting. Not not because Trabiski doesn't
(01:37:21):
appear to be further along. Not because uh not, not
because Houston isn't potentially a championship team if they figure
out the quarterback. But here you have a super talented
player in Mahomes. But he he lacks some refinement and
he's just a rookie. And then you have Alex Smith,
who we know Alex Smith's ceiling. Although Alex Smith, the
(01:37:43):
truth be told, the NFC Championship game played well enough
for them to win, it was two fumbles by Kyle
Williams which caused them to essentially lose that lose that
game so he could have taken the Niners to that
Super Bowl that eventually Colin Kaepernick did the next season. Um,
if you're in charge in Kansas City, do you buy
at the bullet and think about playing the kid, knowing
by the end of the season he's got a higher ceiling.
(01:38:05):
Or do he continue to throw Alex Smith out there
because he singles and doubles. He may dump it down
to the to the tight ends and to the running backs.
Uh too often, But you can live with it because
you'll get to the playoffs and you'll be in position
you know the team. Andy Reid is a very good
football coach. O Mahomes is in a very good situation
Number one, and the other quarterbacks that you mentioned yesterday,
(01:38:27):
they are talented guys and you can expect them to
grow as players. But Andy Reid has shown that he
can take players at the quarterback position and make them
better once he gets to understand Once they get an
understanding of his system, he understands how to work with them.
So as far as Alex Smith, I disagree with you
on that. In as an NFD championship game, Um, it
(01:38:48):
wasn't all Cayl Williams. But as far as what Alex
is doing right now, I'm putting him on the field
and I'm playing Alex. Alex still has he still has
this perception of the first round bus in San Francisco,
But you talk about the things that he has done
beyond that point. Alex can show it for you in
(01:39:09):
the big games. He's done it. He can win you
playoff games, He's done it. He can make the big
throw in the playoff games, He's done it. He can
have the big day when your defense is not playing
in in in a playoff game, He's done it. So
I don't understand why you would be thinking about benching
this guy. Right now. You have your backup. Everyone has
to have their backup, and you possibly have your quarterback
(01:39:30):
of the future, But right now that kid's not ready.
I would be upset if I'm in that locker room.
I would be upset if you're going to sit Alex
Smith down and play a rookie when I feel like
I have all the pieces in place to compete for
a championship. And I'm sure that's where the Kansas City
chie's roster is right now there there, guys probably still like, Okay,
(01:39:52):
we are a playoffs club, which gives us a chance
to get it all. You better play Alex. Um. What
about Houston? You have a far less proven veteran there,
but still laura veteran against the Deshaun Watson who's his
decorated as college players you're gonna find is the situation
different in Houston? Yes, it's a different situation because you
(01:40:12):
don't you don't have that guy that's one playoff game.
You don't have the guy that has that can show
you that when it's crucial uh to get a play
from the quarterback position, uh, that he can get it done.
Because because that's the thing you hear a lot man
where guys always talking about you just don't want your
quarterback to mess it up when you have that type
defense and and your special teams are that way. No,
(01:40:33):
you actually need that quarterback to carry his weight and
make plays. Uh. And Deshaun Watson, especially if you look
at the the office that Bill of Run runs there. Uh,
it's as close to the spread, the college spread that
you're going to get. Uh. We all know that Deshaun
Watson made a name for himself running that type offense.
So I think he could come in and he could
(01:40:56):
possibly be able to make some plays for you. And
while he's on the run and learning, I don't think
there's a major difference between the level of play that
you're gonna get from him right now and the and
the incumbents. So I would I think I would take
my shot with the youngster and go from there. Because
this is the flip side of what I was talking
(01:41:16):
about Kansas City. I don't think you have a locker
room that feels like those that the quarterback position is
going to win it for him. So if if the
rest of the team won't feel like coaches letting them down,
if they if he takes those guys out and puts
in the rookie, it's a great point. Eric Davis joining
us on the Doug Olive Show, We're gonna say, Cutler tonight,
what are your expectations from Jam. He's being reunited with
(01:41:38):
with with with with Gaze, a guy who he did
have a lot of success with. And look, uh, you know,
as long as he's got Landry out there, he's got
an elite level wide receiver. They have some good playmakers
on that team. Um, what what what's what's your level
of expectation again, Joe and died when comes back from
from the concussion and you have a good running back,
what's your expectation for Jay Cutler with the Dolphin the offense? Uh? Well,
(01:42:01):
Adam Gates number one sets the tone. He's a cocky coach.
He he has a lot of self confidence and belief
and that is permitted through the locker room. And I
talked to the guys on that team. They all talked
about it that you know that they know that they
are expected to get it done, and he believes that
they can get it done. And Jay Cutler is gonna
be Jay Cutler man. He's gonna come in. He knows
(01:42:22):
the offense. So we're not gonna see much in the preseason,
of course, but as far as running the offense, I
think Jay can come in and he will be the
same guy we've seen. Jay is not all of a
sudden he's gonna turn into Bart Starr. You know Johnny
Units and started throwing darge. He's not gonna turn into
Troy Hickman. He's not gonna turn into Aaron Rodgers. He's
Jay Cutler. He throws a pretty ball. Sometimes he throws it.
(01:42:44):
He throws it to the wrong team. He does that,
and those are the things that we're gonna see out
of him. Now, he's gonna take his chances. He can
make some pretty balls and throw some pretty balls, and
he has a receiving cord that can help him out
and make plays. He has a run in games, so
the things are in place there for him to be successful.
I think the only issue that you will have in
(01:43:06):
Miami is if they don't come out of the blocks winning,
if they don't come at the gates winning, then I
think it could be an issue because regardless of how
how you think you you had to go. If you
are the Miami Dolphins and saying that we had to
get us a starter when and when Tannehill went down,
you still have human beings in that locker room. All
(01:43:27):
these things, the protest and everything we've been talking about
should let people know These are human beings in the
locker rooms and not machines. You go out and you
get this mercenary. You're paying him this, this ransom to
do a job. He better do the job or the
guys they're resented and it can cause a problem in
the locker room. It's just it's really that simple. So
(01:43:49):
that God, if he comes in, he's winning, things are
going well, Jay is cool. If not, you start looking
around like why did you just go with Matt more?
Matt could have done that? Why why is he making
his money? And I'm not. I've been trying to get
more money out of this team and you could give
him that money and this is all we get out
of him. He's the same j Cutler that we thought
(01:44:09):
he was when he played for someone else. That that's
the issue. So it's it's all about winning. He's not
gonna be a different person. They just have to win
some games and did Adam won't have a problem. E d.
Eric Davis, you can see how to speak for yourself.
He's a super Bowl champion and excellent, excellent analyst. Eric,
great stuff. Thanks so much for joining us on Fox
Sports Radio. Anytime man talk to you, all right, we'll
(01:44:30):
talk soon quickly, let's find out what's trending here. It
comes Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. You'd always tweet
us at Gottlieb Show, at J. S. Ramos, Oh six,
you want to follow John Ramos, get all his movie
uh his movie reviews? Ramos any movie reviews coming up
any time since hopefully soon. I haven't been invited to
(01:44:52):
one this week, but hopefully so. I got soccer starting,
so we'll see how it all goes. Yeah, we get
we get to we get soccer. Shout out, actually shout out,
shout out. I want to make you cool and and hip. Um.
I don't even know, like after done Kirk, Like, what's
the next big movie to be to be uh be released? Right?
Did you see the Emoji movie? I know I did.
(01:45:15):
The kids want to go, but I I read some
other reviews and I told him percent on Rotten Tomatoes
eight percent on Rotten Tomatoes. That's not even good for children. No, yeah, no, no,
as opposed to dun Kirk, which got nine on Rotten Tomatos,
which is like real, Chris. Look, Christopher Nolan, anything he
(01:45:36):
does is pretty much awesome. But and you were not
huge on Despicable Me three. No, I was with you.
I think I was with you on that one. I
had not I've not seen My kids were a camp.
But I just felt like if I went to see
an animated animated movie without my kids, I would be
looked like I would. I would look like that creepy guy.
Who's the guy the animated movie with no kids? No, No,
(01:45:57):
I like Steve Carell, your dog is leaving bums on
my loan. We're big, We're big groove fans in my house.
We just really are all right. We got I gotta
find out, like, when's the next big movie. Dunkirk was
a big movie. I have not seen it. I should have.
I didn't, and I'm kicking myself still in theaters though.
Uh let's uh, let's find out what else we've missed
(01:46:18):
in the world of sports. We'll quickly run through him.
Something we call the presser joins us. Good afternoon, once
again quite a headline from the Boston Herald. Today. Owner
John Henry says the Red Sox will lead an effort
to change the name of Yawky Way. Y Way seems innocent, However,
Henry says he is still haunted by the racist legacy
(01:46:40):
of his predecessor, Tom Yawky, the Red Sox, he said,
should take the lead in the process of rebranding the
Jersey Street extension outside Fenway Pack that was renamed to
honor the former owner forty years ago. Yawki is a
member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, but he also
oversaw the more than decade long stretch until nineteen where
the Red Sox watched every other team in the major
(01:47:02):
leagues integrate before they became the last club to do so.
They saw Jackie Robinson said, no, they saw Willie Mays. No, okay,
but but so so if if they take his name
off the street does then that put pressure on the
Baseball Hall of Fame to take him out of the
Baseball Hall. Like right, No, Tay Cop is still in
the Hall. A can't. But like, where do we? This
(01:47:25):
is the hard part. Look, I mean, I'm a white man.
I'm embarrassed by the history of racism and oppression in
our country. Of course I am, um and like look,
just like anybody should be embarrassed by anti Semitism, which
still occurs like racism in our country, albeit I feel
like on far more limited scale than it used to
that said, like are we gonna go back and and
(01:47:48):
relitigate things that just when does when? When does it stop?
Like I'm okay, Like you want to take down the
robberty Lee statue that sits the top that that towered
above parts of New Orleans, Like that makes sense to me.
This is the principal owner of the team speaking. The
caveat is it's a public street, it's fund funded by
pack taxpayer dollars. The Red Sox are not in control
(01:48:09):
of renaming streets. He with his power, wants to start
the effort. Well, then, look, this is the thing in
that area. The Red Sox financially have made that area
into The value has tripled, quadrupled, even Quintupple, that'd be
Quintup Quintupple closed, and concessions and all of that um
(01:48:30):
and so if they wanted done, it's like Lebron James,
all right, Lebron James didn't fire David Griffin. But if
he didn't want David Griffin fired, David Griffin wouldn't have
been fired. If if the Red Sox ownership group wants
that street name to be changed, dammit, that street name
is going to be changed. So we'll see if the
effort actually gets underway. It sounds like it will this headline.
(01:48:52):
Golford disqualifies himself at US Amateur in l A after
realizing his caddies error. Accordingly, two time US Open participant
Chris Crawford, thank you for the golf clap, realized his
caddy was using the slope function on his distance measuring
device and the twenty three year olds intended caddy had
(01:49:13):
got nail, which led him to hire some fill in
caddies for the first couple of rounds. Apparently, the U
s g A started allowing distance measuring devices for all
of its amateur events in recent years, but the slope
reader people must be turned off. A one time in
fraction would have been a two shot penalty. And this
is the guy who was three shots inside of the
cut line and disqualifies himself. Wait, so he decued himself. Yes,
(01:49:39):
another guy was disqualified this week. Didn't sign his scorecard.
But this nobody apparently would have known what was going on,
but he golfer stand up men disqualifies a very peculiar place. Yeah, multiple,
there's a there's a rule, It says, uh rule fourteen
dash three. Multiple uses of a distance measuring device with
a slope feature activated by his caddies is the one
(01:50:01):
he violated. I did gain an advantage, but I do
I didn't get an advantage, But I do know the rules.
I know. Nobody else would have known, but I knew.
I knew what the rule was. It's just the way
it is. Uh. So he couldn't have slept with himself.
Then that's yes, that's a that's a stand up dude.
There right, that's a stand up dude. That's the stuff
(01:50:22):
you only see. Remember that commercial where the balls going
out of bounds and then they come onto the sideline
and then around the coach like coach. It was out
on me. It was out on me, coach and all
the guys like, what are you doing? What are you doing?
Would you have done it? Uh? If I had known.
You always report the correct golf score always. You always
(01:50:46):
report to gret golf score. Oh if you're asking us, Yeah, yeah,
a golfer. Yeah, you always report the great gulp in
a tournament though, this is the question. Yeah, listen again.
I do think golfers hold themselves to a higher standard,
and I commend Mr Crawford for doing something from the St.
(01:51:08):
Louis Post Dispatch this headline Rally cat custody case. You
remember the cat that ran across the outfield in a
game just a couple of weeks ago, a week ago
at stadium. He's being cared for by the St. Louis
Ferreal Cat Outreach, but the Cardinals are claiming custody. A
vice president of the team says the organization is assured
(01:51:28):
ist they will be returning our cat to us, our
cat after a mandatory ten day quarantine period, which would
be Monday, the day before the Cardinals come back to
Bush Stadium for a homestand quote rally cat will be
cared for by our team, making the Cardinals clubhouse his home.
Is it really a feral cat? Uh? Yeah, it certainly qualifies.
(01:51:49):
It was outside and came inside. Yeah, well a Ferrell cato,
it's a wild cat. Okay, here's the thing. Here's how
you if you want to know if the cat who
it belongs to, here's what you do. Leave it outside. Okay,
cats always find their way home. I swear to you.
We we we lived in this the house we just
moved back into. We lived in three years ago. Okay,
(01:52:10):
so I was in the house for like a week
and a half before my kids and wife got here,
all right, and the cat got out a couple of
times and would come. I would make sure to come
back during the day because at night we got coyotes
in my neighborhood or whatever. And you know what, she
found her way home. Cats always come back home to
where they consider home. If this cat is really the
Stan Louis Cardinals cat, it will eventually find its way
(01:52:31):
to Bush Stadium. Bag it out there and pressed that
the press. Doug otlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. Why don't
we cover this version of history more? We discuss it next?

Sports Radio. You know one of the things, there's a
couple of rules when you're conducting in national radio show.
I'm not sure if you guys are aware of this, Ramos,
do you know you know the rules that the number
one rule in a national radio show is what ramos
(01:53:15):
talk about national issues? Well, yeah, talk about nationally said
that you actually you you got closer to nailing it
than you thought. That's act. The number two rule. Number
one rule is don't talk about the stuff that you
want to talk about, talk about the stuff that everybody
wants to talk about. It actually number one rules, sales
rules the world. Number two rule is number two rule is,
and this is very important, is don't talk about the
(01:53:36):
stuff that you don't talk about your stuff, all right,
talk about the stuff everybody wants that the widest set
of the audience. Um. And and maybe the rule that
kind of goes in concert with that is like you
have to disassociate yourself from the market in which you live.
Like when in my previous place of employment, I was
in New York, I wasn't on in New York, So
(01:53:56):
you know, I can't do I can't talk about the
Yankees every thinking in the ranges because nobody cares. But
I do think the Dodger story is kind of being
undersold a little bit, don't you? I mean, don't you?
They won thirty of their last thirty four home game.
They started out the year, started out the year eighteen.
(01:54:18):
They are currently fifty one games over and they don't
have their best picture. Clayton Kershaw and they don't have
their most consistent offensive weapon in Ajuring Gonzalez currently, Like
that's that's crazy stuff, that's insane. They won. There was
a thirty eight comeback win last night with three runs
(01:54:41):
culminating Yasiel Puig with a with a game winning walk
off double last night. And again I don't want to
make this. I'm not even a Dodger fan. I'm an
Angel fan. I think it's incredible somehow that they're in
the wild card hunt. Their teams banks and they're in
the wild card hunt, and like that's a special story.
But it's interesting to me, like when the whatever NFL
(01:55:05):
team doesn't has the last to have a loss over there,
could they be undefeated? And you know, Mercury Morris. They're
not driving around our neighborhood yet, Like Mercury Royis is
a big thing, and like the the Patriots got all
the love, and I understand, like sixteen and oh is
bigger than fifty one games over five, but it shouldn't be.
It really shouldn't be. But like look when the when
(01:55:28):
the they're going after a hundred sixteen wins, that's the
all time record, and when the Warriors won seventy three
like that's all we talked about and nobody And again,
I'm not trying to make you. I can't try and
make you care about something you don't care about. But
isn't it at least weird that I can't you can't
really get anybody to care about it? And I know
(01:55:50):
there's the Uh, what is it called when you have
when you have something in your mind and you think
to be true and it ultimately comes to be true?
What is that called? I'll think of it. Probably, I'll
think of it as soon as we turn the off.
What are you gonna say? There's not not a premonition? Now,
It's like, um, what does it call when you just
(01:56:12):
when you think about do you think something is gonna
be negative? And then it comes to that it becomes
a self fulfilling prophecy? Right, That's what it really goes up. Like,
I know nobody's gonna care about it, so I'm gonna
talk about nobod's gonna care about people like you know
what I don't care about like say told you, But
it's weird. Maybe it's because the Dodgers haven't won and
they've been in the playoffs several times recently. Maybe it's
(01:56:33):
because it's l A, and I think perception is l
A sports fan doesn't care. They canna draw four million
plus people again at Dodgers Stadium like they don't care,
but they kind of keep showing up, which kind of
feels like you care. They're eighty five and thirty four.
I can't remember. Do the math on that twenty one
in eighteen to eighty five and fifty four? How does
that work out? One four? Right? And then thirty four?
(01:57:00):
Or in the eighteen Wait a second, that's eighteen. That's six.
Holy cow, it's craziness. Craziness, So I can't make you
care about it. Maybe they have to somehow win a
World Series or have to get to that hundred and
sixteen win level to where you take it seriously. And
I'm trying to disassociate myself to the market in which
(01:57:23):
I broadcast from, though don't broadcast in pony contention, um,
but I do think this story is being underplayed nationally
and instead we're talking about dudes protesting or not protesting,
So maybe they are protesting out. I'll be on the
Herd tomorrow. Check me out on Fox Sports one and
