Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports What Up America Doug gott
Leave show, Fox Sports Radio Live and direct from the
City of Angels, where the Battle of l A has
already been one. We're calling it early. It's like a
presidential election, right, We're calling this state for so much
stuff to get to. Uh. Look, the adage in the
(00:21):
NFL is very, very simple. You don't know what you have.
Do you reach October one? Right? Um? And I believe
that tomorrow tomorrow. I have no idea that today that's today,
No yesterday. Really like there's certain days you just don't.
I have no idea, just trying to be honest with you.
I know the thirty one of October Halloween, right, I
(00:45):
know the December. I know my own birthday, to my
kid's birthdays. I know a couple of my friend's birthdays
outside of that four the July when julyn never changes
sink goody mile, good holiday, good holiday. Um. But first
of October is generally the demarcation of we know what
we have because trends have been built. We'll get to
(01:07):
that one second first. Like, look, uh, I like most
of you, maybe all of you, woke up to the
news of what happened Las Vegas, and it's terrible and
it's scary and it's awful. And I could go on
a tangential rant about how our government didn't do anything
after Newtown and if we're not gonna do anything after Newtown,
(01:29):
why don't we do anything after Las Vegas. But that's
not this is not that's not what you come here for.
So it's not out of a lack of respect. It's
out of an understanding that we all have some sort
of reason why hopefully you came to listen to me
um Ryan music. And I were in that exact same
area just a couple of weeks ago. That was the
(01:52):
site of the media center for Mayweather McGregor, same exact location. Know,
we were there Saturday night. I actually went to there's
a new country band Midland at the number one album
in America. Actually went to this small little concert right
on the beach. And so I don't know whether it's
(02:12):
just I'm a human being, or we were just in Vegas,
or the fact that I was just at a country concert.
My wife when she heard the news, I mean, she's
completely distraught, rightfully, so as I know many of you are.
When you start to think about, like you can't go
to a concert anymore. But like, look, that's why sports
exist because it's not the real world. It's not. And
(02:38):
so while it's okay for you to freak out over
the Patriots Super Bowl possibilities because their defense is a
sieve in the real world, it pales in comparison and
importance to all the other stuff going on. Right, So
don't think I'm not thinking about it. Don't think we're
out watching it, following it, all the news stories, et cetera. Uh, well,
(03:01):
let's talk about sports for three hours. Doug out the
show Fox Sports Radio Trends building right, Like, look, I
don't know. I mean, my my eyes were burning because
I went back. I DVR as many of the games
as I can. I went back late and I was like,
you know, I hadn't pay attention to the Jets Jacksonville game,
and I was like, oh, this one's really hard to watch.
(03:21):
Blaw Paul is awesome, a hundred sixty three yards rushing,
and um, I I struggle with the you are what
your record says you are When the Jets are two
and two and I know they're not as good as
the Giants that I know they're not as good as
the Chargers, and yet here they are two and two
and the Giants and the Charges are both oh and four.
(03:42):
So you can go with that you are what your
record says you are. I don't believe that always to
be the case. On the other hand, we got enough
trends to tell you that the Patriots defense is no good,
So too is the Ravens offense. Can you imagine a
game with a y Evens took on the Patriots and
that defense against that offense. That's the resistible force against
(04:06):
the movable object. Right, the Ravens offense is the resistible
force and the Patriots defense at the movable object. But
I also think it's fair to say there are other
trends like, look, I'm not gonna fall in love with
um Deshaun Watson. I know they put up forty fifty
seven points. His huge sticks about fifty seven points, and
(04:27):
everybody's going crazy. Ryan Music, who is the defensive coordinator
for the Tennessee Titans, dick Lebo, dick Lebo, dick Lebo.
John Ramos came from where Pittsburgh Steelers, right, Pittsburgh Steelers.
Do you remember the game that ended dick Lebo's career
in Pittsburgh. That would be when Tim Tebow was quarterback,
(04:51):
running quarterback against the Pittsburgh Steelers defense. Right. They won
on a was a eight yard to Marius Thomas Catchen run.
The point is, we've seen like it's his defense style.
He may be a Hall of Famer, but like Monty
Kiffins failing to evolve in college football, he tried to
(05:13):
use the Tampa two against the spread offenses and it
didn't work. Dick Lebo has never been able to figure
out these running athletic quarterbacks, who, by the way, when
they first come into the league before everybody has a
book on them, it works great, and eventually they keep
them all in the pocket. They forced him to throws
that they don't want to make, and that's where we
find out who is and who is not in it
for the long haul. Vince Young started out quite well. Uh,
(05:37):
Johnny Manzel had moments of greatness. Really, we all want
Deshaun Watson to be the quarterback that the quarterback whisper
Bill O'Brien can find. But to say that this early
into it, we know what we have, just pump the
brakes a bit. It's a Dick Lebo defense, and he
made a lot of plays with his feet, and they
moved him around smartly. And as people get a book,
(06:00):
they do, in fact adjust to you that happens. And
the defense that he lit up last week was the
Patriots the same defense Cam Newton lit up this week.
The correlation is always, I mean Alex Smith first week
and seeing like, wow, Alex Smith is awesome, or maybe
that Patriots defense they were to damn and they're holding
(06:24):
on that luxury item Jimmy Garoppolo right. Uh, it doesn't
appear they need him to be the quarterback anytime soon.
I wasn't a problem with Tom Brady. Tom Brady was
spraying the ball all around. They came from fourteen down,
tied it up in the fourth quarter. Problems at defense,
even without Julian Edelman. The offense gave them enough. The
defense just did dine. And what about the difference in
(06:51):
Jared Golf and the l A Rams. They go into Dallas,
they used Legatron Greg's are line kicks seven field goals
seven seven seven seven field goals. But more than anything,
they use a running back to beat him in the
passing game. The running game, keep the Cowboys off the
(07:14):
football field, and they just continued. After the first drive
of the second half they had to punt, they just
continue to get points, get points, get points, get points.
So look, I think a lot of that we learned
that we've learned a lot about these teams in a
short period of time, a lot a lot about these teams.
(07:37):
We learned the Patriots have major defensive issues, communications issues
in their defensive backfield. We learned the Ravens have huge
issues on the offensive side of the ball. And I
do think we have enough of a pattern here. And
I'll grant you part of the you are what your
(07:57):
schedule says you are is the ran do I think
the Rams are better right now than they were last year,
and better coached, absolutely, and golf has matured and he
has better weaponry. All that stuff works. But remember so
much of sports is about confidence, and unlike other teams
having to go out on the road and playing legit
playoff caliber teams. They opened with the Colts with a
(08:20):
backup quarterback at home. They They then had the Washington Redskins,
whom their coach had coached the last year, a game
they probably should have won at home. Then they went
and took on the San Francisco for the Niners, who
I think Shanahan's doing a nice job, but they're not
a good team, and so they hadn't had their confidence
killed by their first three games going into Dallas. Dallas
had a short read to prepare, they had a long
(08:42):
to prepare, and they kind of got to let it
all hang out. Plus they had the one thing that
has given Dallas trouble in the past, which is a
solid running game to keep that offense off the football field,
so that dallas Is running game can't keep you out
the football We got patterns building in the NFL. Other
(09:04):
pattern is you see Antonio Brown get pissed in the sideline.
He was wide open. Ben Roethlisberger missed him and he
only had three catches yesterday. At at at any point
where D'Angelo Williams is going to join us next, admit
that the Steelers offense is still missing something like, oh,
they'll get it together eventually. But man, speaking of missing something,
(09:27):
how do you fix the Ravens office? Danya h uh
fair to point out the wind of the day was
the bills over the Falcons should be pointed out Mohammed's
knew Julio Jones not playing in the second half, so
uh so, I mean you basically beat the Falcons and
Falcons had both arms tied behind their backs. Like I know,
(09:50):
I heard Colin talk about how, oh, Kyle Shanahan leaving,
Kyle Shandon leaving hurts their play calling. You know what
else hurts your play calling? When Julio Jones isn't playing,
that really hurts your play calling. Oh and then you
took away Mohammed Snu as well, that hurts your play call. Funny.
Their running backs are still good. That yeah, because the
running backs were healthy, their wide receivers were not. And
(10:10):
I would love to sit here and say that was
It's any wins a good win. But Detroit gave Minnesota
as many opportunities as as they could to win that game.
And of course the Vikings lost Dalvin Cook and she
the Vikings trade for Adrian Peterson bring him back. Saints
gotta win. Saints are two and two. Saints aren't the
(10:32):
disaster we thought they were. That's actually reserved for the Dolphins.
I'll take you talk about trends building. Dolphins should have
lost the Chargers. Dolphins should be oh and three. I
know they haven't played a home game. They're not a
good football team. But while the Saints two wins are
good stories, the real story there is Adrian Peterson's their
third best back and their third best fit for their offense.
(10:54):
And now the Vikings, with Dalvin Cook out for the year,
need to starting running back. All right. D'Angel eam joins
the show. Next, I'll get his thoughts and Steelers on
the Ravens. How the new look Cincinnati Bengals. You see
what they're doing with Bill Laser, Bill Laser having any
Dalton get rid of the ball quickly and it's working.
Look quick game? Can that last? We'll find out upcoming next.
(11:19):
But first, I am bright eyed, bushy tailed, and cheery.
Why is that? Because I'm sleeping great at home? And
I'm sleeping great because I got a Casper mattress I've
been doing. I've been some of the Casper match for
like a month and a half now, and man, just
kind of good night's sleep changed your whole disposition. Casper's
too high tech foams much better than the overpriced mattress
(11:41):
I used to have. Plus they have that how to
do that? How they do that? Size box comes in
a box, you open it up, put lay it out
where mattress supposed to be. You open it up and
then just like fills up with air and there you go.
It's amazing. Um it's a breakthrough and design, superior quality
and packaging. You get a hundred nights risk free. If
(12:01):
you don't like it, they pick it up from your house.
Sleeping on a mattress is the best way to try it,
so put Casper to the test for a hundred nights
risk free. You go to Casper dot com and use
the code GOTTLIEB for fifty dollars towards the purchase of
your next mattress. That's Casper dot Com code gottlieb get
fifty dollars towards the purchase of your net mattress To
go to Casper dot com. Terms and conditions to apply.
(12:22):
Here's a select code difference. Most companies give you one option,
one policy. One rapist like quote gives you options lots
of options. Give slight Quote a call at eight hundred
eight one four four six six, or go to slit
quote dot com for a totally free personal quote. He
was the all time leading rusher in um Carolina Panthers history,
but I mentioned he was. Jonathan Stewart passed him yesterday
(12:43):
as part of the Carolina Panthers win over the Newingld Patriots.
Expect to have D'Angelo Williams join us momentarily here as
he as he always does. Usually, D'Angel a little bit defensive,
little bit fired up right. Well, I like him though.
He gives us good in insight, good info. Uh. We'll
get back to the nf FELL game in a second.
Did you guys see that Troy not only beat L
s U but troll to L s U. YEA, I
(13:06):
saw that so Uh. Troy, which is a university which
is in the state of Alabama, was paid nearly a
million dollars. It's to get what's called guarante. You know,
a guarantee deals right for people who don't know. Um,
you don't just go down and play a road game
out of the goodness of your heart, like, oh yeah,
we'll go down there and get our heads beat in
for free. Sure they pay you. The top end is
(13:29):
in the million dollar range. To pay a million dollars
and you get that. That's a school like Troy can
play a couple of those games a year, and that
funds funds their entire athletic department. They'll also get like
rooms and sometimes transportation as well, us like busses to
the games, all part of the deal. You're like, well,
why would l s U pay for it? We'll want
it to win. But two, it's moneymaking proposition. You pay
(13:54):
a million, but you make a couple of million. And
then having home games in Baton Rouge is the lifeblood
of all those university hounds. So Troy beats him. And
Troy also trolled them on the way out of town
with a on Twitter and said, we really, we really
appreciate the hospitality for having us down on homecoming l
(14:16):
s U's homecoming as well. But the big the big
thing is that ed Or Yourn, who is a former
d line coach from the state of Louisiana, talks to talk,
walks to walk, great recruiter, former head coach at Old
Miss as well, not a particularly good one, but always
(14:36):
got players. And of course then interim coach at USC
they hired Matt Canada, who came down from Pittsburgh to
UH to run their offense. And it's kind of a
finesse offense. It's a complete departure from how L s
U had previously played right. L s U under Les
Miles is like nighties early nineties football. We're gonna line up,
(15:00):
We're gonna mash you. The we're gonna line up, We're
gonna mash you some more. I'm gonna mash you some more.
And that that transition is really really hard. Transition is
really hard. It's made a lot worse when Ed ors
Ron decides he's gonna get his hands on the offense
in the first half. If you didn't see it, here's
basically what happened. L s U s offense is all
(15:20):
his motion and movement and shifting, trying to create miss
matches before the snap of the football, a lot of
stuff going uh east and west right, using sideline to sideline,
And in the first half of that game, all of
a sudden, there's no shifting, there's no movement. They're just
running the ball downhill and it wasn't working. And then
(15:42):
all of a sudden the second half, now they're back
to shifting and moving it all over neither worked. Troy
escapes with a wind ed ords Ron comes out and says, yeah,
you know, I do go with the elves a little
bit like, what are you doing? What do you do
Sean McVeigh. Do you guys see what Sean McVeigh did
(16:04):
when the Rams won yesterday? They're go in the locker room,
Sean McVey takes the game ball, hands it to Wade Phillips,
the defensive coordinated. Now, did the defense do a nice job? Sure, sure,
but it's been a complete transformation of Jared goff in
that offense. A complete transformation of Jared goff in that offense.
(16:28):
Not only that you don't see Sean McVeigh and I, hey,
let me get in there and call those defenses something
I have no idea about, which is what you're seeing
from at or I mean like this is this is
the boss coming in and going all right, let me
let me run, Hey, Ramos, let me run the board
step aside, And he's like, all right, look all these
buttons and a lot of buttons. You just talk and
I'll tell you when it's time to get out at
(16:50):
or come on. Maybe totally over his head. It's like
it's okay if you're in over your head at your job,
it's fine. Like being a head coach, it's like being
the president, Like I'm okay if he didn't know what
he's doing. But if you hire somebody who you feel
is competent to do the job, let them do their job. Yes, uh, yes,
(17:11):
right music. Did you and your career ever have like
one of those was supposed to be like a homecoming
type game that you ended up losing at home, like
like a A L. S U losing to Troy. I
had a lot worse than that. Really, well what happened?
I don't like to, I have to. I have to
(17:32):
such instances that the one is the only time I
played a college basketball game in southern California. It was
against U c l A. Was in the pond of Anaheim,
and I was thrown out at halftime. Oh we gotta.
I got a tea in the first half for nothing.
Charlie Range, who's absolutely should be locked up. He's a criminal,
as as about. He always reft big U c l
A games and they were getting every collarly and so
(17:54):
I flipp him the ball like right to his hands.
So I didn't like throw it at him, just look
at it, like, come on, Charlotte's clean that. Come on, Charlie,
I was cleaning up a little bit. You call chuck,
Charlie Charlie Range and he t me, I don't I
still don't know why. And then end of the first half,
Baron Davis scored his only bucket of the game, his
first game off of torn A c l And he
comes back huffing and puffing and like bumps chests with me,
(18:16):
and I kind of brushed him aside to go get
the ball and bounds as the clock was about to
expire and he flops like I shot him. The rest
didn't see it. They said it was after the final buzzer,
so it's technical foul. I got thrown out of the game.
We lost by three. That's the only game I've ever
played in Southern California. My brother and sister went to
u c l A. We had season tickets for twenty
years to u c l A. I was recruited by
us LA, turned them down once. Uh, they didn't recruit
(18:38):
me in the second time because they got Baron Davis.
So like it was kind of a big personal game. Yeah,
we lost. Thanks for bringing up appreciated Also, Uh, last
game regular season game of my college career against Oklahoma
before they expanded the arena, Galagari Arena. We had a
third team point lead in the second half and lost.
And we were undefeated at home that year and beating
people by points. So yeah, I I know what it's like.
(19:02):
And coaches out smart themselves. They they do it, and
after the game they're like, well, you know, we gotta
execute better, like or you gotta not screw us up.
Not screws up. So it does happen. Why do you
bring it up? Why do you ask what that what
that feeling feels like? Yeah, yeah, exactly, that feels bad.
I wasn't I wasn't sure it feels feels bad. Big Lee.
(19:25):
It was really big a learning experience, you know, growth process,
one of those things. Now it just sucks. Uh no,
I mean you call on it, You're like, remember that,
Oh that sucked, that sucked. That sucked. I do love
how it just sec fans just freaking out. Here's the
part that matters. That, the part that makes the least
(19:46):
sense about L s U is they hired at org
Ron Okay, emotional higher you get the recruits. He speaks
to the language. I actually think in theory, it makes
some sense, right, higher good offense, cording r higher good defense, couding.
Spend your money there, save your money on it. Ors,
you're on, but they didn't. They paid him a couple
million dollars and he's got like a twelve million dollar
(20:07):
buy out. Why was somebody coming in and going like, hey,
we want to hire your defensive line coach who was
your interim coach became your head coach? Like nobody's stealing it? Ors,
you're on away and none of these, not one of these.
We have the list from Vegas of the coaches who
could potentially be named new head coach of Tennessee because
(20:29):
Butcher Butcher Jones is just uh, it's a disaster there, right.
They got beat a million to nothing, or at least
it felt that way. But his name is not only
not on the list, they would never be on the list,
Like what are you doing If you want to hire
a coach, fine, do you want to give him a
(20:50):
buy out? And and the reason the buyouts exist is
so that fans and boosters and people like me they
can't go crazy over one loss and go like, hey,
get rid of the guy. They're not firing him right now.
On the other hand, it had to be twelve million dollars.
That just doesn't seem to make sense. So then all
the love. We heard a couple of years ago with
the USC Trojans and oh my god, we can't get
(21:11):
rid of it or drown he's so great? If not,
how can we get clear that was probably best for
them that they moved on from it or drown the
Trojans football? Is that what you're saying? Is that what
your point of view is about? Or drown? Really he
probably would have been in over his head at USC
as well. He wasn't over his head at USC. I
mean he just was. Remember he let them have cookies again,
(21:33):
Like that was a big thing. Part of it was
he followed Lane, and nobody liked Lane. I said, a
lot of it's who you follow. He liked Lane and
he had good coordinators. And but like, uh, didn't they
get beat by U c l A. Didn't they lose
the two big games? I think they played two big
games like Notre Dame in U c l A. And
they lost both of those two games. You know, it's
like one of those. Yeah, there was better energy and
(21:54):
they didn't get humiliated, but they weren't good all of
a sudden. And look at Clay Elton. I mean it's
it's kind of he's another nice guy who was there
on staff, more of offensive minded guy, you know, former quarterback.
Like look it said. It doesn't mean that it was
a bad idea for red ors Round to get the job.
(22:16):
It was a bad idea for red ors around to
go like, hey, let me, let me take a look
at that playbook. An offense which is based around pre
snap movement motion and uh and shifting. Let's take all
all that shifting and motion stuff. You know, all that
stuff we've been practicing for a couple months. Let's take
(22:36):
it out. Having a defensive guy decided to call plays
for a half. That's basically what it looks like. That's
basically what it looks like. Alright, quickly, let's bring in
Dan Buyer. So much going on, Doug right now in
the world of sports, especially in the National Football League,
and we start with quickly and off the field. Note,
(22:58):
the Fifth Circuit Court of a Yels in New Orleans
has taken the Ezekiel Elliot case under advisement, according to
the NFL Network, with a judge saying that the ruling
will come as soon as possible. We just don't know
when exactly that will be. We do know this Vikings
running back Dalvin Cook it's gonna miss the rest of
the season after turning the a c L on his
knee and yesterday's lost to the Lions. Vikings are in
(23:19):
Chicago a week from tonight, where they will take on
the Bears. Head coach Mike Zimmer says there's a chance
Sam Bradford could return, as he's missed the last two
games because of a knee injury. Bears are gonna go
with rookie quarterback Mitchell Trabinski, according to ESPN, as he
would replace Mike Glennon, who's off to a one in
three start. Titans getting some good news for quarterback Marcus
Mariotta just considered day today with that hamstring strain suffered
(23:41):
in that big loss to the Texans yesterday. While Seahawks
running back Chris Carson is likely lost for the season,
suffered a fracture at his left leg according to head
coach Pete Carroll, and last night's win over Indianapolis, Carlino's
linebacker Marcus Golden has done for the year with a
torn an c L. Redskins and Chiefs wrap up week
for tonight at eight thirty time. A couple of baseball notes,
(24:02):
Twins Skipper Paul Molitor says mcgulson. No will likely start
their wild card game Tuesday against the Yankees on the bench.
So No mist six weeks because of a fracture in
his shin before returning late and the sale of the
Miami Marlins to Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman closed this morning.
Finally dug the University of Louisville Athletic Association board has
started the process of terminating Rick Pettino's contract with cause. Yeah,
(24:25):
it's likely surprising news every I love a Rick Pettino's, like,
you know, eventually be vindicated. I'm laying low, but I'm
selling my house. Yeah, that doesn't seem like you think
you'll be vindegated that these two things don't seem together
to go together. It's all about that forty four million
that's sitting there, right, Isn't that what it's all about?
But what why why are you selling your I mean,
(24:46):
obviously wants to get the hell out of town, but like,
why are you why are you selling your house? Well,
I think a new I think a new four bedroom,
three bath just opened up in a nice neighborhood they
had always wanted. So maybe they're going that way. That's
the way the way they're going. Dann Buyer be back
with with game time upcoming. Um. Some of the news
you may have heard from Dan is that Mitch Trabisky
Mitchell Traubisky. I'm sorry, lets go by Mitchell true Wisky.
(25:09):
Jonathan Ramos? Are you Jonathan or John Rama? Just John?
Just John? Just John Ramas. I don't know how John
you spell at j O n or j o h
n j o h n j o h just John,
like like the biblical just John. That's correct, biblical. Um,
and uh, I am. I'm a Douglas. The only personal
world calls me Douglas is my sister. And it's it's
(25:31):
not that I haven't told anybody to call me Douglas,
just very full. It's long to and it says that
Douglas got leaves. She doesn't work out. It doesn't work
out so much. Ryan is Ryan is Dan Daniel or
Dan just Dan is Daniel? Dan is Daniel? Are you are?
And you guys named after anybody? I'm named after my uncle,
your uncle John, uncle John. Okay, so I bring it up.
(25:55):
Mitchell Drobisky, Mitchell is my middle name. Mitchell Trabisky anyway,
So Mitchell Trabisky is gonna get to start for the Bears.
And look, this makes all the sense in the world
because Mike Glennon has stunk. They played on Thursday night,
they don't play till Monday night. It gives your rookie
your best possible opportunity. And they're playing at home too, right,
so it's given him plenty of time to prepare. It
(26:20):
was the obvious decision. And as much as Mike Lennan
probably didn't get a fair shake, he got about as
fair and unfair shake as you're gonna get. And you're like, oh,
he stinks. I'm not disputing the fact that he stinks.
But when you sign a guy and he goes to
the draft party, a draft party which he did not
know they were going to trade up and draft his
(26:43):
immediate successor, like, you're not really saying to the guy, hey,
you are a long term solution at quarterback, you know.
M uh so, I mean that's that's one of those
deals to where you're like, you start dating a girl,
you start thinking about making plans. She doesn't want to
(27:06):
leave it, leave a toothbrush at your apartment, right, Like, now,
I don't really want to leave a toothbrush apartment. Well,
you know, he should make some plans for this is actually,
this is kind of what Ryan ran into last week.
You want to share Ryan with Ryan? Step didn't last week?
Did you hear this? Ramos? I did not hear this.
You probably shouldn't have shared it with any but he did.
Now I'm gonna share it with the world. So Ramos
(27:27):
went Ramos, Ryan went on, Remember he left us. He
went to Hawaii. He did, and he was like, oh,
what an incredible trip, Like, who would you go with
you with my girlfriend? He stayed this awesome place, like
in Maui. We're talking about places. He was like, wow,
that place was amazing. The trip was amazing, our relationships amazing,
like all these things were like check check check check
check was like cool. So his girlfriend like, it's like
(27:49):
last week. She's like, hey, Maui was awesome. We should
do it again next year. We should like get it
on the books next year. So let's just say Rama's
you were dating your wife now girlfriend, and she says,
you've been dating for like a year, and she says, hey,
what do you think about Maui next year getting on
(28:11):
the books. Would you what he what do you say. Uh, Well,
for my personal I would say because I would know
at that point that we were probably headed in the
right direction. Well not just that, but like, you can't
give anybody any reason to not think you're headed in
the right now. In in Ryan's personal case, like in
his particular case, he had some logic behind hesitance. His
(28:37):
family wants to do it, get together. His family wants
to go fly galivant around the world. You know, he
comes from a lot of money. The only way he
can do this, so he wants to, uh, he wants
he wants to They want to go somewhere else. He's like, look,
you know, I don't know. Uh, I had a great time,
but I want to keep my options open. And so
(28:59):
I immediately said, like, what are you doing? You hideouts
you you called that out right away because because I
told you that story, you were like wrong answer, wrong answer,
no further explanation needed, you just wrong answer. This is
this is somebody saying like, hey, I have I have
Lakers playoff tickets third Row Center, Okay, and it's on
(29:25):
you know, June three, June third, your girlfriend's birthday. And
you're like, and I can only take you do you
want to go? And right now you're like, man, I'm
with my girlfriend and I don't even know if the
I don't even know if the Lakers gonna make the playoffs.
You say yes because you can always cancel later. Always.
I'm first of all, I'm late. Cancel guy just yet.
(29:46):
People think I'm doing something with him tonight. I'm not.
Never the big things. I'm doing them tomorrow. Like we
just we can't can't do it. I'm sick. Yeah, that's one.
That's the only reason I had kids, because when I
don't want to do something, I just go. It's a kid.
Ge't do it. Um So music made the music. Have
you dug yourself out of that hole that you dug
and runned into? Yeah? Absolutely? Have you decided I would
(30:08):
do I? Honey, I do want to go to Maui.
I want to go with Maudi. I want to go
with you. You're the only person I want to go
to Maui with. About it in put it in, that's it.
I got it tattooed on my chest. Maui. These dates
here we come right. This is the the the Bears
drafting mit trading up and drafting Mitchell Trobinsky was them
(30:30):
telling Mike glenn And Hey, we're going to Hawaii next year,
but we're not bringing you. We're not bringing you, which
makes it really really hard to keep going on dates
with with this girl with the Bears. Ah. But Glennon
was bad and so it's not a surprise even in
(30:51):
the slightest de Angel William is gonna join us next hour. Um, yes,
I did say it earlier. I got in several people
on Twitter asking me, I said, I understand that the
Jets have a better record. I got it. Jets have
a better record. Jets are two and two and their
(31:12):
wins are over the Dolphins and the Jaguars. They're undefeated
in the state of Florida or against the state of Florida.
But the Dolphins stink, and so did the Jaguars, and
they go to the Browns next. They might win that game.
That doesn't make the Jets good. So we all fall
in line with this old saying, right the the bill
parcels you are what your record says you are, but
(31:37):
are you? I mean, compare that the juxtaposition the the
the Jets with the Giants, who could have beaten the Buccaneers,
could have beaten the Eagles. Uh couldn't move the ball
or protect against the Lions or the Cowboys. But remember
didn't have Odell Beckham Jr. Early on in the season
on that first Cowboys game. And by the way, they
(31:58):
play the Chargers coming this week, so somebody's gotta win
or at least both teams have to tie, and the
Giants after that. If they don't win this game, they
go to Denver take on the Broncos. Then they're home
for the Seahawks, then they're home for the Rams. They
play good teams. You can tell me all you want
about you are what your record says you are, But
(32:20):
don't tell me that the Jets are better than the
Giants or not. Nobody thinks they are. It's a lie.
You've been told it a long time. Bill Parcels is
really smart system, really smart things. That doesn't make this accurate.
Smart people don't say all smart things. The Vikings we
without their starting quarterback, lost their starting running back for
the year. Is it a big deal, a little deal
(32:44):
or no deal? I'll tell you upcoming next what true car?
You can find out what other people in your area
paid for the same car you're looking for, new or
used visit True Car to enjoy more confident car buying experience.
Doug Otlin Show, Fox Sports Radio. Look this somebody agrees
with me? Is what from Pro Football Talk the that
the Patriots must trade Jimmy Garoppolo Sheason lack Camp for
(33:08):
prop excuse me, CBS Sports dot Com. He'll join us
later on in the week. Ah, they gave up thirty
three points to Carolina Panthers, and Cam Newton looked terrible
all year, looked incredible. Three t ds uh one pick
(33:28):
all said forty four rushing yards in a score. But
I mean you you look back and there, what's the
what's the correlation? Every team that they played, their quarterbacks
had the best game like of their life against the Patriots.
Maybe at some point it's not the quarterback. No, they're
just getting up for playing the Patriots or Patriots defense sucks.
Let's get to a game. Okay, this is game time
(33:54):
on the Doug Gottlieb Show, Dan Bio, what you got
familiar today? On this Monday, we have god big deal,
little deal, no deal? All right? How about five big deal,
little deals, deals or no deals today? Starting off in
the NFL, Minnesota Vikings lost a tough one yesterday to
the Detroit Lions fourteen to seven. But big deal, little
(34:15):
deal or no deal, Doug that Vikings rookie running back
Dalvin Cook is gonna miss the rest of the season
after tearing his a clal. I mean that's a that
we still don't know the status of Sam Bradford, right,
so we're gonna backup quarterback. And even Bradford's to a
c l tears in his left knee leave you with
no level of confidence that he can finish out the season. Uh,
(34:35):
his potential backup is is Teddy Bridgewater, who of course
has had his own devastate knee injury about a year ago.
And now you're losing an incredible weapon, incredible weapon like
Minnesota Vikings just had to feel feel absolutely cursed. You
know what else is interesting? He tore his knee planning
in the field turf at the Stadimuere. They're gonna play
(34:57):
the Super Bowl, right. Um. Remember when we were kids,
people used to tear their knees up, shred their knees
up on AstroTurf, and we used to blame it on
the turf. Nobody does that now on field turf. But
I'd love to see if somebody ran the numbers, the
percentage of kneed tears on the field turface pros to
the natural stuff. I know that Jordy Nelson tour is
just running down the field of the natural stuff. And
(35:17):
maybe it doesn't matter, or maybe it does. I'm I'm
right there with you. At one point we thought AstroTurf
is the greatest thing in the world, and then all
of a sudden it was the worst thing in the world. Yes, exactly,
And that's why I wonder if that is the case.
I mean, heck, you know Adrian Peterson has you know,
it's like it's like sugar, right, Like there was a
(35:37):
time in which we went away from real sugar and
you've got some stuff with aspartain Like no, no no, no,
aspartame causes cancer. You gotta go back to the real stuff.
And they're like, now, now sugar is the enemy, but
so too is fake sugar the enemy. Everything is the enemy.
So if grass is real sugar and AstroTurf is aspertain
(36:00):
field turf is like um uh splender right, and you
might be better off we just grass just playing grass.
You know, big deal, a little deal or no deal.
You know that did a change in Baltimore. It used
to have the field turf now went to the grass.
That Steeler's wide receiver Antonio Brown was in Baltimore yesterday,
(36:21):
Is it a big deal, a little deal or no deal?
That Brown had a tantrum on the sidelines when Roethlisberger
didn't throw on the ball on a route where he
was wide open in the first half. Well, look, you
can be right and wrong at the same time, right,
And that's exactly what happened to Antonio Brown. He was
wide open, big bend missed him. He has every right
to be ticked off. But you just I jumped my
(36:43):
eight year old son yesterday because he threw a little
tantrum because he wasn't playing well in our baseball game.
And like, there's just there's a way in which you
gotta behave when you're part of a team, and Antonio
Brown refused to do so. And like, look we see
it from we see it from Odell Beckham Jr. At
times there's those tantrums. I think it takes away from
(37:03):
your credibilities to team leader. I really do so, I'll
say little deal, It's not no deal. Steelers still gotta win.
And this was this wasn't a fourth down in the
fourth quarter where he wanted the ball. This was first half,
about ten minutes to go until halftime, and apparently he
said it was a play that they practiced. Also brushed
off Todd Hailey, the offensive coordinator, all in a game
that the Steelers pretty much dominated yesterday in Baltimore. Big Deal,
(37:26):
little deal or no deal, a report from T and
TSS Thunder forward Paul George will give the team a
fair shot to keep him when he becomes a free
agent next summer. Uh, i'd say little deal. Um, you
know what you're saying. This is like again we talked
about dating, just like very early on and dating like
they're they're wowing Paul George. Hey, look look we got here.
(37:48):
We got Karmelo Anthony. Uh, that's like a really really
nice car. Now you got Russell Westbrook signed up for
six years. Like, oh, it's a beautiful house. It's a
nice job, very stable. This guy is stayed at the
thunder a man. They're stable, good job, good house. Right
at the end of the day, like, let's let's see
if we're meant to be together and you only get
(38:09):
that over playing for a year and then see what happens,
like right now, that looks like a great place to stay,
but you haven't ever even really lived in Oklahoma City
and Los Angeles still out there, and the likelihood is
Lebron James still ends up with the Lakers. I do
like the the analogy of of dating and then when
you're three months into the relationship, you just leave the
(38:30):
underwear on the floor. Big deal, a little deal, or
no deal. The sail of the Miami Marlins went final
today and with that final deal, Marlin's under Jeffrey Lauria
is taking out his bobble head collection from the stadium
and instead donating it to Cooper's town. So Jeter and
Bruce Sherman get the team, but Jeffrey Lauria is taking
(38:50):
out the bubblehead. How good is this bubblehead collection? It's
kind of neat. It's one of those things that you're like,
oh this, you did have your picture taken. I think
there's a six hundred in the complete waste of times time.
This is like a grown man with a bubblehead collection
is like a grown man with a train set. Don't
(39:11):
get me wrong, I wanted to train set when I
was a kid, but then I reached puberty. This is
game time on the Dug Gottlieb Show. All right, we
have breaking news here. Do you have a breaking news
sounder here? I believe John Romins is a breaking news center.
Isn't there somewhere? Man Ramos? How how are you starting?
(39:34):
I need confirmation? I got any confirmation from this, Dan Buyer.
I was told that John Ramos's Blue Crew rallied from
an early one nil deficit to get their first win
of the season to one of the Vipers. Do I
have confirmation that can be confirmed? Doug? Uh, let's go
down to the field quickly. John Ramos is with our
Doug Gottlieb coach Dramas. You were down one kneel you
(39:56):
were down one nil early. What adjustment did you make?
I took my best players on the team, put them
into the defensive position, causing the other team not to
be able to score any goals, and then uh moved
on from there a couple of cheap goals late in
the fourth quarter. Uh, Coach Ramos, what do you have
to say about allegations that you are sleeping with one
of the players mothers. No, that would be true. That
(40:21):
would be your daughter. Ways they would say, it's true. Comment,
no comment, no comment, Jim back to you, all right there,
there you go, John John Ramos. The color of Ramos
right now is the color of a California sunset. It's
a little bit hurtple a little bit. Tony Romo would
be like, he's sleeping with her. He is sleeping with
(40:43):
her seven days a week. That's what he's doing. Tony
Ramo had a little regression there yesterday, didn't he like dinner?
I was like, he's the greatest broadcast ever? Is this
play right here? I think that might sound bless. Jim
nance is like, you know, you don't have to yell,
don't have back to backs are starting to catch up.
It might be his own platz. I don't know. I
(41:05):
can The Tawboys are two in two. Might they have
some issues? Like maybe not the best quarterback unless year's draft?
Next to the Doug Gotlip Show, Boom, What Up America,
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, Coming to you from
the City of Angels, the city who uh like the
rest of the country, and morning over what happened in
(41:25):
Las Vegas? Terrible? A city who Hey, at least he
had one good football Team one playoff baseball team. Uh,
and the city who now has lost an iconic figure.
You guys see this, Tom Petty has passed away at
the age of sixties, six years old. Um, I don't
know anybody's not a Tom don like like Tom Petty,
(41:46):
Like you don't have to be. You don't have to
be like you know, people go crazy over Springsteen and
like Prince Springsteen is fine. I'm not a Springsteen fan,
but I'm like a Springsteen hater. I kind of feel
like that how most people are about Tom Petty. Right,
there's one of the two of his jams. You like,
there are some people that are serious Tom Petty fans,
(42:07):
but I don't know many people who don't like some
great Tom Petty songs. Ramos. Your favorite Tom Petty song
is what Refugee d the Torpedoes. That is, you went
old school on us. You dated yourself ramos, which is
okay in some parts of the country. Um, music much
younger generation. What's your favorite Tom Petty song? Yeah? I
(42:29):
think I gotta go chalk with just some like free falling,
free Falling. Uh. What about you, Dan Buyer, do you
have a favorite Tom Petty song? Yeah, you got lucky
and yeah, that video was great. Um it does. And
and Dan is from He's he's from Wisconsin. And it
does feel like Midwestern music. Like I first got to
(42:52):
know Tom Petty music when I was a freshman Notre Dame.
It feels like Midwestern music. I don't know what is
that a fair? It's kind of it's kind of a
throwback rock and roll. He sort of show there's some Yeah,
there are a lot of different sounds. May Last Dance
this is my favorite. Like, yeah, I don't think it's
really really close. Although I did be honest with you,
(43:12):
I thought Mary Jane was a girl's name when I
first heard the song. I was just like, I didn't know.
I didn't didn't know. You know, she grew up in
Indiana Town and a good look a mom. And then
it was around and here's the thing. Do you write
his rama's You know this better than I do. Did
you write most of his own? He did? And I
was just telling you right that Friday night, I watched
(43:33):
a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers documentary. I was looking
for something on Netflix to watch and I haven't watched
Netflix like about a year, and I stopped at the
Tom Petty documentary and watched two hours worth of it,
and I'm like, wow. I had a friend who went
to the shows. He was at the Hollywood Bowl last week,
and I kid you not. She wrote on there she
had some video and she wrote, this feels like it's
(43:54):
his last tour. He's telling a lot of stories, talking
about a lot of memories, and she, you know, put
a couple of video clips up and those things are eerie.
But yeah, just a week ago is at the Hollywood Bowl. Well,
I mean like, look, a guy writes his own music
and he had I guess he had a hard attack
his malbow home and they took him off life support
and he passed away a short time ago. But that's
(44:15):
that's a that's sad, and I do I think more
of I'm gonna actually relate this to sports in a
in a weird way, okay, um, and so it mrs fine,
But I want to talk about Tom Petty and I
do want to talk about sports. So tell me if
this makes sense. I don't. And musicians have this too,
I have. I have a couple of friends who are
very successful musicians. I won't name drop them because because
(44:36):
one was actually critical of the other, So one who
writes his own music was like, you know, he didn't
write any of his old songs, And it's amazing because
the one who doesn't write his own songs has incredible
catalog of songs and when and like as a guy
who's married and has kids, like some of them about
married and have kids, and he has no kids, is
(44:58):
not married, and you're like, how does he know? But
he's and and when he sings it, it feels like
it's coming from him. Maybe it' because the only person
I've ever record those songs. But musicians I believe have
a a much greater raffinity for people who write their
own music. Um, but I can only like Tom Petty
wrote his own music, and his own music kind of
(45:20):
if it speaks to you, you're like, wow. I think
even more fondly of him, not just his not just
the sound and the very unique style in which he
would sing um and the kind of look. I also
associate him with the car. It feels like them in
the cars, Like I don't know why, it kind of
feels the same era, even though Tom Petty obviously lost
(45:40):
Heartbreakers less a lot longer than the Cars. What was that?
What's the lead singer of the Cars. Right, Okay, so
it's a strange that I fella right um anyway, So
but look a lot of what like, uh, when I
think of of Mary James's last dance, UM one, obviously
(46:02):
the the what is it? The lyrics? Lyrics are perfect.
It tells a story and then you're trying to figure
out what does the story actually means. Plus it has
a beat which is iconic, and a guitar solo which
is iconic. Right, You're like the whole thing just kind
of works together, and if you separate any one piece
of those, it probably doesn't work. And I was I
(46:25):
was kind of thinking about this in a different form
when I was watching the Cowboys and the Rams play
and last year it was everything was about Dak Prescott,
and it was really hard to determine, like was Dak
really good or was it the offensive line and then
the running backs and the wide receiver and the tight
end and like just kind of the whole thing, and
then the way in which they played, and they played
(46:46):
ball control and the defense wasn't great, but they hid
the fact the defense wasn't great because they would have
these long drives and so the defense would only have
to play you know, six eight nine possessions, and so
they could be better because all of a sudden, now
offenses would would feel like they were sitting over there
for six, seven, eight ten minutes on the sidelines. Well,
(47:07):
the Rams kind of help make that point with what
they did in the off season. They got an incredible
left tackle. They went out and got Robert Woods, then
they got and got Sammy Watkins. They already had Todd Gurley,
but with a better offensive line and better weaponry and
a better play calling, with a quarterback coach that comes
over from the Atlanta Falcons, with an head coach offensive
(47:31):
coordinator who comes over from the Washington Redskins. They're like
in the ear of Jared Goff who had had been
coached just long enough by Jeff Fisher and staff to
not be completely screwed up and not completely lose his confidence, right,
and the whole thing just kind of works together. And
they have Legatron Greg's rline. So even when drives stall out,
(47:53):
they're like, that's all right, we've got three points. We
just keep getting points, keep getting points. They had twenty
one points on field goals alone you yesterday, um and
and look it also goes with their Their defense has
been pretty good for a while, but their defense, anybody's defense,
is lose confidence when your offense is completely inept. The
offense was at least getting some form of points. It
(48:13):
just kind of all worked together. And look, do you
have more respect for an Aaron Rodgers who we talked
about this going back to Tuesday, right has no left tackle,
has no right tackle, still finds a way to win
and dominate a game. Even a running back gets hurt
and he's still is kind of Aaron Rodgers like. And
they have a big lead, they win by the against
(48:34):
the Chicago Bears. Yeah. I mean I maybe that's Tom Petty,
that's or that's that's writing your own music and playing
every instrument and recording backup vocals or whatever and then
playing it live on stage. I don't know, but I
would say that the whole Rams thing kind of works together.
And if you didn't know what dac accomplished last year,
(49:00):
you would say, hey, you know what, I think the
Rams quarterback might be better then the Cowboys quarterback. And
that's how they were evaluated, right that, that's how you
can go from bust to success or. And even now
we're like begrudging wanting to give Jared Goff like is
he really good or are they just good around him?
(49:21):
Or is this just McVeigh or was it just the
Niners who we live up like they just beat the
Cowboys in Dallas. They're pretty good, pretty good, and we
could say what we want about the Cowboys defense. And
Sean Lee didn't play yesterday, and obviously that hurts their
ability to stop the run and hurts everything when you
lose your your leader, your Sergeant Holka. If you will
movie reference, no chance, Ryan music against the Sergeant Holka reference. Correct,
(49:45):
no clue, Dan Buyer, did you get the sergeant Holker reference?
Thank you? Army training, Sir training, sir. Nothing nothing. I've
never seen it, never even heard of it, to be honest,
never heard, never heard of it. If I've seen it,
I think that's enough for Ryan to go see it.
(50:05):
Do you think it stands up test of time? Almost?
Would you go see stripes? Yeah, stripes is good. Stripes
is good. The problem is that the are that the
assault vehicle is like an RV that's gonna be a
really it's like a Winnebago that has like missiles and
they go attack East Germany. There used to be Ryan,
there used to be an East and West Germany West
(50:26):
Germany as Germany bad? Say again was its Germany bad?
West Germany? Gad recession bad recovery gad. Okay, I just
gotta know those things. Anyway. I understand that Shawn Lee
didn't play, and I get that they did. Their drives
did stall out and end in a bunch of field goals.
(50:48):
But dude, they went in and put up over forty
on the Cowboys in Dallas, and he looked more than competent.
But it's also because everything, all of it kind of
worked together, right. Tom Petty dead to day of sixty six?
Sixty six too too soon, Although when you're a rocker
(51:09):
like I think he probably went pretty hard for a
long time. So his sixty six is a lot more
sixty six and like you're my sixty six. That's crazy though,
that Um that by Byer he gives you that you said,
who went to the who went to the Tom Petty show?
One of my friends? Um, you have friends? Yeah, how
(51:29):
about that? You know it's the thing to do. You
can and I've done it myself. Take some video of
songs and on American girl where she was recording, she wrote,
just out of the feeling this is this is his
last tour, because he was telling a lot of stories.
And yeah that was just a week ago, a little
over a week ago. Wow, that's sad. That's but I mean, like, look,
(51:51):
this music catalog lives on forever. There some really really
good ones on there. So we had one vote for Refugee,
one vote for James Last Dance, one vote for free Falling,
And then what was yours? Buyer? You got lucky? You
got lucky. How's the good one's going? Also a good one? Uh?
No one said I won't back down. No one said
(52:13):
running down a dream, run down dreams run oh yeah
a dream? And I hate guitar solos, but I love
the guitar solo in that song as a good one.
No no, it's great. No no, no, nina, no no right,
that's what those of us who know nothing about music,
that's actually what we think of I go, no, no, no,
no, no no, no no, You're supposed to know what I'm
talking about, right, all right, haven't visit? How about this one?
(52:36):
No no no no no no no no no no
no no no no no no no no no no no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
what is it? John's got it? John? Is it? John's
your microphone not working? I told the money for nothing,
money for nothing, chicks for free. I know it's dire Straights.
I understand. Not Tom Petty. I'm not gonna take it
away from Ryan when he actually called wow, Wow, I
(52:57):
want my TV. All right? What's is the Steeler's offense? Okay,
even though Antonio Brown's pitching a fit and can even
fix the Ravens offense plus feels like the rams of
the real deal. We're ready to buy in. We'll ask
the Angelo Williams. He'll join us up coming next. But

it perfectly together with the drums, the guitar and and
then your voice like it's like it was the perfect
The start of that song is perfection. Tom Petty dead
at the age of sixty six. Iconic rock star, songwriter,
uh and legend in the music industry. Speaking of iconic
(55:05):
D'Angel though, Williams was an iconic member of the Carolina
Panthers organization. He was the all time leading rusher in
the history of the Panthers. That record was a race yesterday,
So he's just second best. And he joins us, Hey,
we're like the second best show on Fox Sports Radio. Anyway,
you're okay with your record going down to Jonathan Stewart,
I have I felt like you there was your opportunity
(55:25):
to take a shot at me. Man, God leave, Yeah,
it was. It's good to lose it to him. Uh.
You know, the record stood for not even a year,
or maybe a year, I'm not quite sure, but I
knew he was closing in on it, that he'd eventually
get it. I just didn't know how soon he would
get it, because you know, they don't really value running
(55:46):
back cold Carolina Walton like the youth tou it's more
of a it's more of a quarterback running back wire receiver.
Do all there. I want to get to the Pittsburgh Steelers,
one of your other former teams, in a second. But
I know you watch those Carolina Panthers games with great intensity.
How fixable are these issues with the with the Patriots?
Because yes, Kim looked good, There's no I cannot dispute
(56:07):
the factor. Kim looked as good as he's looked all season.
But every quarterback has looked good against that defense. How
fixable are those issues? I was fixable, but I'm gonna
point the finger at one. Bill Belichick. Bill Belichick believes
in his system that his defensive coordinator put in, so
(56:29):
he went out. Not only did he go out and
get stars to put the plug into that defense, he
started to realize now that it's hard to plug stars
in the defense and asked them to stay well within
the defense that you run and not be the stars
that they were before you plugged him into the systematic defense.
(56:49):
That's what's causing them issue their stars That are tweets
that are peter than whether I should play the system
or should I trust me as the star athlete that
I am. So until they buy any either one or
the other, either the defense coordinators to hey, I'm gonna
let you guys be stars, or the defense coordinate said, hey,
this is my system, damn it. Believe in it and
(57:10):
trust in it to some stars that have always believed
in themselves. Before it was no name guys that believed
in the system because they they didn't know what it
feel like to be stars. Now you have one Shaid
Malcolm Butler. He gets to pick against Cam on the ball,
that Cam through that to receiver that wasn't even his receiving.
He just sell out that guy and played football and
(57:31):
he's been a starter that he has been since he
since the Seattle Sears game, so he's been a star.
And then you bring over step Fard Gilmore from the
Bustle of Bills, who was the star there. So you
asking two star players, not only just those two star players,
because other guys that have taken on the role of
these two guys in terms of hey, I want to
be that star. So they're taking more opportunities or more
(57:54):
more rich plays than they have been just believing in
the system. And I blamed it on Bill but Check
because you need time. Not only do you need time,
but you need these guys. You need time in order
to make these stars believe in the system that you
have put them in. Like you could say, hey, look
at these guys before you, you know, blah blah blah
blah blah and point out guys, but they don't know
(58:15):
that those a system guys. They just know that their stars.
So it's it's it's all Bill Belichick and that defenses
they're trying to run because that offense hadn't stopped, had
missed the beat. They put up thirty plus, they put
up thirty point. Yeah, it's not the offense. The offense
is going. It's that defense. And I can't put it
up the defensive coordinator because the defensive coordinator is not
(58:36):
the one ultimately pulling these triggers to get these players
over here. On defense, it's Bill Tarsk. I'm almost sure
he condrols everything in New England. Dianz Williams joined us
in the Dug Gottlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
All right, um, let me ask you. The Raiders are
a team that was supposed to not have a great
defense but have an incredible offense. We saw the Redskins
take them apart. It's I guess more reasonable that the
(58:57):
Broncos with that defense taking apart and I know of
Derek Carr got hurt, but what do you see when
you see the Raiders offense and why they had a
lot of drops as well, But you got tight end
dropping the ball that could have saved him, and you
know they're they're Mark Cooper's got I think seven or
eight drops already this season. Now, this is a team, uh,
by all intents and purposes, I would have thought had
(59:20):
been the dark horse to knock off either the Pitch
Parrots stealing with the New England Patriots to get them
to the ultimately the Super Bowl. Like this is the
only team that I thought it was like a legit threat.
But the problem with that this team is that they
don't know how to win football games when it's time
to win those football games. That's what that's the difference
(59:40):
between teams that are contenders and teams that are pretending
and that haven't made that leap to being that contender. Yet.
You gotta make your plays when the ball comes to you.
They're not making their plays. Not only that they have
a quarterback ns on the man in there, car, we
have no idea what's what's eating him? Or what's what's
bothering him right now? You gotta run it back and
be mold that can carry your thing. He's obviously you've
(01:00:03):
seen that at Seattle. So I honestly can't put my
finger on what the problem is in open and I
kind of wanted to ask you that question. What do
you think, from a non player, what the problem is
based on when you watch these football games, other than
the wide receivers just dropping balls in the mid designment.
You know, sometimes if you look back last year, they
(01:00:24):
won a lot of games. Remember the Saints game where
they went for two, went for it on fourth down.
Those are a little bit like one run games in baseball,
where eventually it kind of evens out, right, I think
I don't think they were necessarily as good as their
record led you to believe last year. And I think
this is a little bit of regression. And like, look,
when you're when your best wide receiver has a case
of the drops early in the year and he's supposed
(01:00:46):
to be your most secure hands, Um, I think you
call and and your schedule is more difficult. Yes, they
lost the Redskins, but the Redskins are good, and the
Redskins are also much better at home. Yes, they lost
the Broncos. The Broncos are much better at home they
are in the road. So I think it's I never
think it's one thing or it's just one thing. I
think you got a little bit too much too soon.
We've got a little bit of ahead of ourselves because
(01:01:07):
they won some games last year they probably shouldn't have won,
and their schedule is far more difficult, and now their
quarterback has heard. All of those things kind of factored
in to not just the loss yesterday but the poor
performance against the Skins. Right, so what do you see
their overall record being? Uh from well, the problem. The
problem is, like you start chalking up wins and losses
(01:01:30):
right now. Kansas City is playing better football than anybody.
They still gotta play them twice, and they got Denver
at home. They got Chargers twice. Chargers haven't beaten anybody,
But the Chargers aren't terrible. I think you still gotta
get reasonable and think you're still a ten and six,
nine and seven sort of team. Would I would in
ten six and eleven and five because I think they'll
(01:01:50):
split that series with the Chiefs only because it's the
Chiefs offense versus their defense. And I give the Oakland
writers their details. Um the the only issue that I have.
And they'll sweep the charges because you're saying that they're
not terrible. But the Chargers hadn't beat anybody. No. Look,
the Chargers find way to lose games they should win
(01:02:10):
all the time. They just do. That's just that. That's
that's doesn't matter. It seem no matter if they fire
the coach or whatever. You know, last year when they
lost to the Raiders up in Oakland, they had him
beat missed the uh makeup a field goal. The field
goal kicker let him down twice this year, blocked against
blocked against the Broncos, and then he missed two against
the Dolphins as well. And then you know, now they're
now they're just getting beat up. Let's get to I
(01:02:32):
want to get to the Steelers. Look in back in basketball,
I can tell you every two guard thinks they should
get the ball every time down the court. Every wing
runs down the court. I'm open, I'm open, I can
take my guy, which is a lot like wide receivers, right,
they always they're always open. Antonio Brown was open, Big
Ben did miss him. It should have been a touchdown.
But even even though everyone respects Antonio Brown, do you
(01:02:56):
see anything amiss with him throwing a fit on the
sideline making it's so public even if he has every
right to be upset, he is, in my opinion, he
has every right to be understanding I and I'm not
taking anything away from Ben, But had that not been
Ben Roethlisberger, that have been just a regular young quarterback
or just a quarterback period, and not Ben Roethlisberger a
(01:03:18):
future Hall of Famer, this conversation to be going different. So,
and not only that, I've seen Antonio Brown worked his
ass off, and Tonio Brown is is the best receiver
in football today. I've seen how often he works and
how hard he worked, like everything is dedicated to his
(01:03:39):
craft and to put in the work that he put in.
Because nobody ever say nobody, in my opinion, would ever say, hey,
Ben is not playing good football Like lady young Bell
ran about thirty five times, Yes, I mean Sunday thirty
five times, then was eighteen and thirty and you throw
(01:04:01):
a pick. So I'm not so sure that the quarterback
play isn't an issue or could everybody is putting it
off on Leby on Bill saying, hey, you know, Lebian
he held out and they're putting on the blame on
him and said, hey, he's the reason why this team
in stall it. He just wasn't up to part. He
(01:04:21):
just wasn't this and he just wasn't that like to
put a bad day on the fact that they're just
not playing good football right now. I think it's a saying.
I think you look at a bunch of those guys
in that draft class, Philip Rivers, who we talked about
a little bit not playing great football either. They don't
never put it on the quarterback because these are future
Hall of famers and because their careers are something that
(01:04:41):
can fall back on. Nobody just overlooked it, like you know,
that's that's just him being him, Like, no, he's playing
terrible football. Pointed out, say what it is that you
need to say and move on. Don't put it on
another guy. Are you are we willing as bad as
golf was last year? Are you are you it in
to it? This being believable what they've been able to
(01:05:03):
put together for four games. They just beat the Cowboys
on the road. Obviously, I know San Francisco is not good,
but he looked good on Thursday night the week before.
Are you willing to buy in on what we've seen
from the Rams and specifically Jared Goff. Do you want
me to tell you what game plan that the Rams
used against the Cowboys and the Cowboys hadn't seen in
the long drive? It was the Cowboys game plan, wasn't it.
(01:05:25):
That's exactly what it was. It was the Cowboys game plan. Golf,
don't lose this game. We're gonna run the ball. We're
gonna run the ball until we have to throw it.
And then you see who was the better running back? Now,
said Ezekiel Elliott. Uh, not in the top five, but
you see who was the better running back on that day?
I mean, uh, he finished forward a hundred and seventy
(01:05:46):
two yards Russian and then another ninety eight yards receive
them and two touchdowns the three I'm not talking about
Ezekiel Elliot, you know, Doug. Yeah, So if you're gonna
look at pure numbers just from this weekend, it's just
that that's all you gotta do. Don't blow this game
for us. We just need you to maintain and you
(01:06:08):
know why you can maintain this because our deepens is
just that good. Our defense is good enough for you
to just go in play football, don't turn the ball over,
and let's just hand the ball off. I can coach this.
I could coach the ram. All you gotta do the
hand the ball off. That's it. Play stellar defense like
you've been playing, and hand the ball off and just
take care of the ball. That's all you have to do.
(01:06:28):
If we don't commit any turnovers, we're gonna beat every
team that we played because our defense is good enough
to do that. That's the Agel Williams, two time Pro
bowler and only the second leading rusher in Carolina Panthers
has definitely take a shot. And it also brought up
another point that I made early on in the weeks
that was leading up to this about the Cowboys offense
(01:06:51):
and just what I thought about Doc and they lead
you like they don't play well from high and if
you go up to touchdowns and games over because they
coach him to manage the game, they're not they haven't
took that next step and coaching him to win football
games because they feel like they have time or what
they don't understand. The time is running out and fast.
(01:07:13):
So you the teast this guy to win games and
stop managing games, or you continue to be the team
that you've always been. When it's time to you to
win games, you can't because he hadn't learned how to.
Dangelo great stuff this week. Thanks so much for joining
from Man. Thanks Man, that's Dangel Williams joining us quick.
Let's bring in Dan buy or find out what else
is going on the world of sports. Dan when he
got did you cut up to date on some of
the fallout from Week four? Marcus Mariota the Tennessee Titans
(01:07:36):
day to day with a hamstring strain, suffered it and
yesterday's defeat at the hands of the Houston Texans. Well,
the Vikings lost to the Lions, and they also lost
running back Dalvin Cook for the season. The rookie running
back out of Florida State towards a c L and
has done for the year. The Vikings and Bears will
play in Week five. Vikings don't know if they loft
quarterback Sam Bradford for that game, as head coach Mike
(01:07:57):
Zimmer said today that there's a chance that had good
return from his knee injury. He's played in just one
game this season. The Bears have had Mike Glennon starting
their first four games of the season, but it looks
like it's not gonna be a fifth, as ESPN says
that Mitchell Trobinsky will be the starter for Chicago in
that contest against Minnesota coming up in week five. Of course,
Trabinsky was the team's first overall pick or the second
(01:08:20):
should say their first round pick second overall. No, I
think I got it right on the correction, so he
was a first round pick second overall for Chicago. Seahawks
lost running back Chris Carson, likely for the season. Pete
Carroll said today it's likely a fracture in his left leg.
Cardinals lombacker Marcus Goldens and and you gotta feel bad
for Chris Carson injury. Played career at Oklahoma State and
(01:08:42):
was and and beat out two other running backs. Is
running so well in a game with about seven minutes
to go when you're up by twenty one, as well
as tough to take out? Tonight, Jordan read a gametime
decision for the Redskins in their matchup against the Chiefs.
A couple of other baseball notes, the sale of the
Marlins to Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman closed this morning.
John Keppel Lotta resigned is the GM of the Braves.
(01:09:03):
In a statement released by the team that the move
maybe in connection to a breach of the rules regarding
the international player market. This could be a bigger deal
as things go along. Hate him huh yeah, apparently so
and report from TNT hate him. T n T says
thunder forward Paul George will give the team a fair
shot to keep him when he becomes a free agent
next summer. Shot what he was gonna give him a
(01:09:23):
not fair shot before. Now I'll listen. Hey, you know what,
I'm gonna listen to you like again, I'm not yeah,
I am kind of taking a spot at that shot
at that report. By the way, our NFL discussion with
Dannelians is probably By true Car, you can find out
what other people in you area paid for the same
car you're looking for new or use visit true Car
to enjoy more confident car buying experience. But I love
(01:09:46):
this idea that oh pudgers like, now I'm gonna listen.
You are gonna listen before, right, That's like that's like
when somebody says, uh, okay, I'm gonna be honest with you.
But you weren't gonna be honest with me before. I'm
not gonna lie to you. Well you're gonna lie to
me before. Now I'll listen to you because Russell Wilson, Russell,
(01:10:10):
what did anybody else? Russell Westberg is not gonna play
in the thunders preseason opener tonight. I'm not gonna play.
You know you've got PRP treatment in his knee. Now, look,
it's you have to if you're the Thunder, offer him
the the absolute max. You have to. But that's a
six year contract for a guy who is a freak athletically.
(01:10:35):
I can't think of a more athletic player at um
more athletic great player in basketball. You understand that what
I'm there's guys that are more athletic, but they're not
as good as basketball players. There's guys that are better
basketball players, they're not as athletic. Yes, Kwai Leonard, No
(01:10:56):
like freaky athlete like this dude is fast, jumps latterly
and crazy strong like he's and he doesn't really tire.
Outside of that, he's not in very good shape and
he's not a very good athlete. I mean, he's freak athlete.
What about Lebron You know, Lebron is is crazy strong
(01:11:18):
and obviously crazy athletic. I would say the differences. Lebron
is really stiff in the hips. He even knows he
kind of moves. I mean, he's when he's going downhill
and nothing you can do. But this guy, it's he's
he jumps quicker, he's more explosive. I mean like he
Russell Westbrook moves like a guy that's what like usually
(01:11:38):
five nine point guards are like like just absolute freak athletes,
only he's like six two six three and broad shouldered
and strong. Anyway, my point is he had PRP treatment
on his knee, which, um, you know, I'm sure makes
your knee feel better. And you know it's now been
kind of legalized that you can do it, and that's
(01:11:59):
where they put platelets, right and I plate list. But
I don't know, when you just signed a six year
contract and you're getting kne treatments like that doesn't seem
like the greatest thing, especially when the essence of your game,
Like the great thing about Tim Duncan was he was
never fast, so even when he got slow, he was
not that slow. Right, there was just you know, like
(01:12:20):
Larry Bird didn't larybor Uh, Paul Pierce like Paul Pierce
lost the step, but we never had one anyway, so
that would be my one my one issue there. Um, Look,
the the Deshaun Watson thing is a lot like the
Cincinnati Bengals thing. It just is. It's like the cincinnat
(01:12:44):
Bengals won thirty one seven. That was my lock of
my two locks of the week did actually come through, right.
My picks weren't particularly good, but my Wyoming pick, which
is my college football lock, that one was easy. They dominated.
They won forty five to ten to believe, over Texas State,
which is not really Texas State. Texas State is Southwest
(01:13:04):
Texas State, and they renamed themselves Texas State. There's all
these other state institutions in Texas. None of them call
each other's Texas State. But like, hey, we're Southwest Texas State.
We're gonna call our south Texas State and let's just
go with it. And so then it runs around Texas State. Wow,
who knew? Um? I called the game once for Louisiana
Lafayette and their s I D came over, like you know,
(01:13:26):
you can call us losing. University of Louisiana too. I
was like, but you're not. What about Monroe, right, Monroe losing.
It's the same system Lousia, Ronroe, Louisiana, Lafayette. Uh, there's
others as well. So Texas State is really Southwest Texas.
But the thing about the Bengals is that this they're
(01:13:48):
better and Andy Dalton's getting rid of the ball quicker
and they're running a lot of tempo stuff. Right. It's
obviously working and getting the ball to all their all
their athletes and space, but we should also point out
that teams just didn't have enough film on it. Much
like Deshaun Watson, he went against the perfect defense. Dicklobo's
defense is not good against athletic quarterbacks. Go back to
(01:14:11):
when he's with the Pittsburgh Steelers and they don't have
enough film Undershaun Watson to pick apart where they want
to make him get too in the pocket, where they
want to make him throw, which is a lot like
a new Bengals offense. Tony Romo talked about this couple. Hey,
you know, you get a you get a couple of
weeks out of it and then it kind of plateaus
because people figure it out. Is Matt Ryan one of
(01:14:32):
the top quarterbacks in the NFL. Or is he just average?
We'll discuss next what True Car You can find out
what other people in your area paid for the same
car you're looking for, new or used. Visit True Car
to enjoy more confident car buying experience every day. This
time in the dug Otlib Show, we play for you
a portion of somebody else's radio show. That's right. We
(01:14:54):
takes a segment off like go no kidding um. We
had a great lineup starting without kick the coverage Clayed Haravis.
You also on Sirius x M get first things first,
Chris Carter, Nick Wright, Jenna Wolf, You get Undisputed, which
of course is Skip Bayliss and uh Shannon Sharp as
well as Joy Taylor, and you get Calling Cowherd Show,
(01:15:16):
which you can hear throughout the country and you can
see on FS one, as well as Dan Patrick's show,
Richison's as well, and all the shows that follow ours.
When we bring it back, we'd like to comment on
one of their comments. We call it say earlier in
the day, Colin, howd this to say about Matt Ryan
coming out the Falcons laws. Let's say you were a realtor.
(01:15:38):
I'm gonna take away your worst year as a realtor,
probably your first year in the business, and I'm gonna
take away your best year. Anybody in realty can have
one great home sale the remaining eight years that will
be what you are. Isn't it interesting about Matt Ryan,
who people were writing articles about two months ago as
the next Aaron Rodgers. He's been in the league ten years.
(01:16:00):
Take out last year. He's been good, nothing special. His
passer rating is back to seven, closer to his career average,
his touchdown interception ratio back to being average. Matt Ryan
has been in this league for a decade. He's been
great for a year. That is not who he is.
He's good. He's closer to average than Aaron Rodgers. Uh yeah,
(01:16:24):
I mean I look, do I closer to I actually
think he's smack dab in the middle of average and
Aaron Rodgers. Right, I'm a radical centrist. I think he's
actually right there. He's not average, He's not he's better than.
I would rather have him than flacup, Yeah I would. Now,
it's also fair to say, remember he played in domes,
which always helps your production. Case In point, Drew Brees
(01:16:48):
indomes much better than out of domes. Uh paid Manning.
I know he had the fifty touchdown year with the Broncos,
but don't a dome covered up the fact he didn't
have a great arm for his entire career. Um. But
we should also remember that the Falcons had had never
had back to back to back winning seasons. He had
(01:17:08):
three in a row. Matter of fact, he had a winning,
you know, a winning record his first five years in
the league. They went to the NFC Championship game, he
went to his first supert. They should have with decent
play at same play calling which elevated him, should have
allowed him to win the Super and stead it gave
opportunity to the Patriots. I would agree. He's not in
the Aaron Rodgers category. He's not in the Tom Brady category,
(01:17:31):
but he's better than the middle of the pack. Let's
be honest, and if you want to use yesterday as
your logic behind it, that's fine. Also remember that Julio
Jones got hurt yesterday. Mohammed Sanu was hurt yesterday. So
when you don't have your number one and number two,
he ain't Meghan plays to anybody. Aaron Rodgers, the great
Aaron Rodgers, who, by my estimation and other people. Have
(01:17:53):
you noticed other people are coming along with us, the
best to ever play the position. When you have Jordy Nelson,
they were bad. They weren't good. As Jordy Nelson got healthy,
he got his number one wide receiver back, everybody else
started to get better. And even now we make excuses
for and Rodgers his tackles, and Rodgers of his running game.
(01:18:14):
And Rodgers doesn't have this, doesn't have that. The fact
is will make an excuse for him Rogers because we
know he's great. I don't believe he's great. I don't
think anybody really believed this is Matt Ryan last year
winning the m v P was not because he was
the best quarterback. This is a lot like Cam Newton
winning the m v P. He had the best season
(01:18:35):
in a great season, UM and a guy who had
never thrown the ball downfield averaged nearly ten yards an attempt.
His quarterback rating was at an all time high. It
was an outlier for his career. But if that's an
outlier for his career, he's had a damn good career. UM.
Then there was Peter King saying this about Deshaun Watson.
(01:18:56):
There's one quarterback in the history of mankind who has
had to four yard passing games against the Nick Saban
coach defense, one guy, DeShawn Watson. And I kept hearing
all of these things that people didn't like about him.
All I know is that if you're playing against the
defense that probably has seven high draft choices on it
(01:19:17):
from Alabama, and you're shredding it and you're doing that twice,
what do people want to see? Um? Look the the
entire league, everyone liked Deshaun Watson. No one didn't like
Deshaun Watson. He had no knocks on him in terms
of his personality. But what's amazing about Houston is they
(01:19:39):
may have gotten a steel in Deshaun Watson while missing
a layup in Derek Carr. You know, um, so it
does kind of batting five does tend to work out
for you that way. I will only put caution Peter
King and saying this, everybody likes Deshaun Watson, the person
everybody like in the college player. Chad Kelly lit up
(01:20:00):
that same Alabama defense absolutely let them up Old miss
beat them two consecutive years, two different quarterbacks. But Chad
Kelly's not even in the league right now, and the
point is more even to compete against uh a Nick
Saban defense. His defenses often have struggled against run past threats.
(01:20:20):
And the difference with Clemson is you gotta have the
talent upfront, the talent out wide around you to help
you make those plays consistently, and and Clemson did did
in fact have that talent. So I don't want to
diminish what DeShawn did yesterday, but there have been a
lot of guys who have done it earlier in their career.
Made a play here, made a play there, had a
great game, put up some big numbers, and not end
(01:20:41):
up being a great an all time great starter. It's
what can you do in your second season? What can
you do in your third season? What can you do
the second and third time people see you? A. J.
Brazinski is going to join the show. I'm not sure
how many of you knew major League baseball season is over.
You want to talk about an unceremonious end, right like
(01:21:03):
it's it's over, Like it's it, that's it, it's over it.
Trying to think of what movie or baseball regular season
minds you We're like, you're really interested in the start
and like just starts going. You're like, okay, I've got
any Like you know what, I'll tell you what reminds
me of um Lord of the Rings. Great movie. Here's
(01:21:25):
a great movie. I love them. All three of them
are very good. I just I don't think I've ever
seen it start the first one. I would always fall asleep.
They get better too, right there, yeah, whatever whatever Bilbo
Baggins or whatever the hobbit well, I mean technically Bibo. Yeah,
(01:21:48):
it's just not about Bilbo yea, but Bilbo Baggins is
in it, right, Yeah, I got that part right. That's
that's about all I got past. Yeah, and going and going,
and I'm not followinging it, like I know this is good.
I think they're going in the middle of Earth. Why
are they going in the middle of Earth? It just
going And then it's like over. You're like, all right,
(01:22:09):
then there's more movies. Okay, Okay, that's Major League Baseball
season A. J. Prazinski is gonna join the show. We'll
talk to him about Billbo Baggins. Now, we'll talk to
him about about the playoffs and uh, what were that
was the last time the Dodgers won the World Series.
I watched game one, Game one's iconic Kirk Gibson. Game two,
(01:22:29):
I was there or hershiser shut him down. You were
there to Ramas and they beat the A's the steroid
filled as. I'm sure none the Dodgers not not not
one of them. But we'll get you ready for October.
This the Doug Got Lip Show that's up coming next
on Fox Sports Radio. What up. It's Dug Got Lip
Show Fox Sports Radio coming to you from the City
(01:22:53):
of Angels, the city that hasn't produced a World Series
winner in at least city has since course, the Angels
want to know to get you ready for the Major
League Baseball playoffs. A. J. Presynski of Fox Sports will
join us upcoming, and uh Aj is the perfect example
of how one play can in fact turn a series.
(01:23:15):
Remember when he was with the White Sox. The drop
third strike? Did he catch it? Did he drop it anyway?
Uh That turned that series against the Angels in the
favor of the White Sox, and the White Sox went
on to win their first World Series in eighties, six
years a little bit longer, a little bit longer drought
than the Dodgers. Um, slightly long, a lot longer than Dodgers,
(01:23:38):
since slightly longer than the Cleveland and Indians drought. Indians
was what forty eight or something like that. I think
it was forty eight. Dodgers end up best record, Indians
end up second best record. Three teams with the over
two hundred with over a hundred wins. So we'll get
to A. J. Perzynski in a second. We continue to
(01:23:58):
react to all the news in the world of sports.
Patriots losing at home again, stuff that just never happens.
Their defense can't stop anybody, Ravens offense can't score any points.
We'll get to some football upcoming. But look, the best
time of the year in baseball is upon us and
A J. Pracinski knows it well. He's won the World Series. Um,
(01:24:20):
and he covers it for Fox Sports and he joins
us now on the Doug Gottlip Show. UM. I do
feel like I felt like this is if the regular
season is a movie. A J. I compared it to
Lord of the Rings. Like, man, it was really long,
and we know who is going to be in the playoffs,
with a little bit of exception there in the National League,
but we knew it here last week or two of
(01:24:42):
the season, it kind of felt like it came to
a sputtering end, even though there were so many incredible seasons.
That's the outside of perspective. Agree, disagree your thoughts. Well, I,
first of all, yes, hi Doug, thanks for having me in.
The second well, yeah, I totally agree. The last day MLB,
you change the game times, all start at the same
(01:25:02):
time at three o'clock Eastern, and all the games are
meaningless because everyone had their business done on Saturday at
the latest. So yeah, it did kind of sputter to
an end. And if you look at the American League,
there was only five teams over five and in the
National League it wasn't much better, so you kind of
knew who was gonna be in it. Just it just
didn't end the way everyone wants it to, which is chaos,
which I'd like to and have about seven teams having
(01:25:24):
to play extra games to see who gets in. All right,
but you did get You got some uh you have
huge name teams with the Yankees, Red Sox. You got
the Indians who had the incredible winning streak. You got
the Astros who the offensive numbers are scene in the
American League, you got the Gnats, you got the Dodgers,
you got the Cubs. Uh, you got the Dimebacks. So
I mean Paul gold Schmid gets in. Uh, Zach Grinky
(01:25:46):
gets into you have all the stars you with exception
maybe of Mike Trout and a couple of others in
John Carlos Stanton in the playoffs, you do get what
what baseball wants. Let's start with the home run numbers.
Thirty four percent of the time. All you need is
picture cat your and hit her right, strikeout, walk or
home run. And we're told everybody's just changed their approach,
(01:26:06):
right and that, and that the batting averages down, but
home run numbers are up. Is that it is that
the ball is that the parks. How are these home
run numbers greater than we've ever seen in the sport? Well,
I think it's a combination of everything you just said,
including the players are just bigger and stronger now, the
velocities up, so therefore, if you make contact it goes farther.
If you strike out, nobody cares anymore. I remember coming
(01:26:28):
up and if you strike out it was a huge deal.
Now they're like, go ahead and strike out, nobody cares. Um,
the parks are smaller, and no one in a Major
league baseball a minute. But there's something I think to
the balls being harder. If you talked to pictures, he
talked to players, they say the ball feels different in
their hands. The seams are seams are different. There's more
blisters than ever. So I think it's a combination of
all those things. But more most importantly, strikeouts still matter.
(01:26:50):
So guys go up there with two strikes and still
trying at home runds. Is that good? Is that good
for the sport? And I mentioned it because if you
and like, look, I watch a lot of baseball, and
there are you're not having the rally. He's nearly like
you had in the past. And some of it's the
analytics of it, right. Analytics tell you it's smarter to
hit home runs than having to put three four hits together.
But it can also lead to huge lulls in scoring,
(01:27:11):
huge lulls and not guys on base. You're not having
guys run around on the base pass Is that is that?
I know the numbers look good, but is it actually
good for the game play? Oh, you tell me you're
a fan. I watched baseball still and and the biggest
thing for me is that it takes longer now because
the walks, because guys are seeing more pitches, because guys
(01:27:32):
are striking out. And yes there are lulls because you're right,
even go four or five hitters, six hitters and not
even see a ball put in play because sees two
walks and three strikeouts and you're out of the inning.
So I understand it from both sides. The home runs
are the exciting part. Everyone loves the home run. Everyone
wants can see a guy have his home run shroud,
everyone will see the fireworks go off. And except if
you're the picture obviously on the other team. But for me,
(01:27:54):
I like to contact coggressive base running. I like guys
putting the ball in play. I guess that was more
of my style when I played, So that probably why
I like it a little bit better. But man, if
I could go up there like jin Carlos Stanton hit homers,
I'd probably like that also. Yeah. Pinski joining us Fox
Sports major League Baseball analyst, All right, let's get ready
for Yankees twins, and man like, look, you got Aaron Judge, uh,
(01:28:16):
and you have this this young D. D. Gregory as
you have this young Yankees team that surprised many Gary Sanchez,
and they gotta figure out they're gonna let Sanchez catch,
they can move into d H. With Holiday not hitting,
you know, what are they gonna do in the field.
But the problem is they have to get past the Twins,
who are suddenly now healthy with Sono. What are your
thoughts on that wild card game between the Twins and
(01:28:37):
the Yankees. This these one game playoffs are interesting to
me because everyone's like, oh, the Yankees should win this. Yeah,
if it was a five game, best out of five
or best out of three, I'd be like, absolutely, the
Yankee should win this. But in one game, you have
a guy, let's not forget this. You have a guy
named Urban Santana who has pitched a lot of big
games in his career. He's beating the Yankees in a
must win game. Before granted it was a long time ago,
(01:28:57):
but he's gone into Yankee Stadium and won this game.
So I wouldn't bet against the Twins. Obviously, the Inankees
have more star power and bigger names just because they're
New York with Judge and Sanchez and all the guys.
You listen, But there's also another unknown factor that Luis Severino,
He's never pitching the game of this magnitude, He's never
pitching the game close to this, so how is he
gonna react? And remember, in one game, all it takes
is one bad inning, one bad pitch, a wild pitch
(01:29:20):
in the wrong situation, a big hit by the Twins.
They could be right there. So these one game playoffs
were just so interesting because it comes down to too literally,
one pitch and anything could change the course of your season.
And they're fun to play him, but man, they suck
when you lose. No, I I got it, I mean
and several you know, it's twenty three year I guess
that that's really the question there, right, Like Joe's already
(01:29:41):
decided he's going with sever you know, and I know
CC is not nearly CC Sabathia in the past, he's
thirty seven. Uh, he did end up with four team wins,
as he are, he was below four and he finished
up you know, at least his last outing against Toronto
was was strong. But like your thoughts on going with
the young live arm as opposed to the old wildly vet, well,
(01:30:02):
I like it. I like the fact that they're going
with it. This is what they've done all year. You
go with who got you there, and Luis Savarino was
their all Star. He's a great picture, he got all
the stuff. But you never know how someone's going to
react in that moment until they're putting in that moment.
David Price is the Red Sox. Look at him. He's
never won a postseason games a starter, So you just
never know how people are going to react to post
season is different. And I admired Joe Girardi for going
(01:30:23):
for it. But cc CC stuff is down. But man,
I wouldn't I wouldn't trade his guile in his veteranship
for anything. Yeah, it's interesting you brought up David Price.
I said that the crazy part about Price moving to
the bullpen for the Red Sox is the best he
ever was in the playoffs was when he had just
come out of college and he's with the with the
Rays in the playoffs and he came out of the
bullpen right. Absolutely, he was filthy back and oay we
(01:30:44):
faced him and uh he was not fun at bat Alright,
so Red Sox Indians Astros. I mean, that's you've got
some high powered stuff there. Uh, let's let's start. Let's
start with the Indians. I'm gonna go on this unbelievable run,
the likes of which we have not seen in modern
day baseball. They scored two d and fifty four more
(01:31:05):
runs than their opponent. You pointed out, hey, in a
one game playoff, anybody can win. But in a series,
how do they set up in the series? But one
through five, for me, the Indians are the best team
in all of Major League Baseball, even I know the
Dodgers people say in the National League, but the Indians
one through five have the best twenty five man roster
in baseball. And they also probably, if not the best manager,
(01:31:26):
the top three managers in Tito and Tito Francona. So
they set up grade. You have Clover, who's who's pitched
in playoffs and pitching Game seven last year. You have
Andrew Miller, who obviously is a weapon, Cody Allen, who's
matured this year, Carlos Carrasco. You have all these guys
that have been there, and let's not forget the fact that, hey,
they lost Game seven last year, so they're just a
little bit hungry. Reminds me a little bit of the
(01:31:48):
Royals from a few years ago when they lost to
the Giants, and they came back the next year and
won it. So I really really like the Indians, and
people always asked me, and I have a hard time
picking against the Indians. All right, let's go to the
National League. Cub's hottest team in the National League. But
you know, they stumbled out of the gates, little World
Series hangover, but they still have a lot of time.
Pitching doesn't seem to be the same. Um, are are
(01:32:08):
they the Cubs of last year? Are they the Cubs
of the first half of the year the Cubs of
the second have year? Makes some sense to me of
the defending world champions. Well, first of all, the best
series of the playoffs is gonna be National's Cubs. For me,
those two teams matching up as long as Shirts is
healthy and you go shres Or Strasburg, row Art, Geo,
Gonzalez and then Arietta Lester those guys on the other side,
it's gonna be a great series. So the Cubs to me,
(01:32:31):
are all about how quick can they get it to
the to their bullpend guys. That's what they've been doing.
That's what they did last year. They need Arietta and
Lesser to pitch an Arieta is obviously hurt, a little
bit banged up, So they need those guys to give
them five six innings and get the ball to Wade
Davis as fast as possible. They they can hit, the
Cubs can hit their young. They're exciting, and for some reason,
I just see it gonna be a rematch from last year.
(01:32:53):
It's hard to pick against the defending champions, especially when
they're hot and the other teams that they're playing against
are banged up, and the Rs have been on a low,
have been on a low for a long time, so
they're hot and at the right time. All right, let's
let's get to the Dodgers, because there wasn't there was
a plaint time to which a sixteen wins wasn't out
of the question. And then they and then they go
on this low. Well, so they can't they can't win
(01:33:13):
a damn game. But but they got I mean, they
have six starting pitchers to choose from. Um, what's what
are the right moves for Dave Roberts to make in
terms of setting up his rotation? Oh well, Kershall was one, obviously,
h Darvish has to be too, just because the price
you pay to go get him and all the pressure
(01:33:34):
that you put on him saying he's your number two.
Then after that, I guess Rich Chill and Alex would um.
The problem they're gonna run into is the two teams
they're playing against, whether it's the Rockies or the Diamondbacks,
one match left handed pitching and to both beat them
during the season, the only two teams that the Dodgers
had losing records against. So it's a tough matchup either
way for them because both those teams are playing well,
(01:33:54):
especially the diamond Backs and Diamonbacks and on the Dodgers.
Scare me if they get through that one game playoff,
I'd be nervous. And I've sent it for a long
time now. Yeah, the Dodgers were. I never thought the
Dodgers are an all time great team, just because they
don't have the names, and we think of an all
time great team the twenty seven Yankees, these teams that
are iconic in baseball, Uh Yankees, with all these Hall
of Fame guys. The Dodgers have Clayton Kershaw and then
(01:34:16):
they have really good players behind him, and they all
are really good at their role, but they are a
team for me more built for the regular season in
the postseason. The postseason, you want guys who can go
out and dominate and until Kershawn you Darvers do that
on a consistent basis in the postseason, they're gonna have
question marks. Yeah, it's fascinating. I mean, like, look, and
what I talked about before you came on. You know,
the third strike play against the Angels. The amazing thing
(01:34:37):
about these series is they can change on one play.
You know, it's the best part of the playoffs before
you gotta watch, Yeah, Dave Robert Steele in second base change,
everything changes on on one play. A J. Great stuff.
Can't wait see in the TV side. We'll get you
in in studio in person at some point, but uh,
we'll talk to you real soon. Okay. Hey, thanks, and
thoughts and prayers with people in Vegas. By the way,
(01:34:57):
no question A J. Prasinski, given his thoughts and prayers.
Stuff in Vegas is scary, scary, scary, awful, awful. And
in case you're just joining us, we started the show
talking about just for a moment, just look, you came
to me for sports. Obviously, I'm a human being. Um,
we have it on here in the studio just watching.
(01:35:18):
There's I know there's some tales of heroism, so there
is some good that comes from it. But don't think
that I'm avoiding it because I don't want feel one
the same sympathy or two aren't just as scared. I
want to do a concert on Saturday night. Right my
wife was going out to the Stagecoach. She already had
tickets for. Stage Coach was a huge country festival out
(01:35:41):
in your Palm Springs, Palm Desert area in the spring.
So I love live music, and I hope not for
one second to stop people from going to live music.
And me and Music are actually me and Ryan Music
are producer of the show. We're actually at that that
exact location, that's where the Mayweather McGregor media or was
(01:36:01):
and a live viewing party was at the exact location
where that shooting was. But a j is awesome even
if you did drop that third straight. But I didn't
drop it. The head coach of the team that celebrated
homecoming in remarkable fashion, Did you see Neil Brown's Troy

most of you guys know my all motors ok on state? Right?
All right, so you guys I don't know you guys
know about the Troy incident. This is going away away
is back. Olom State went to Troy like ten years
ago and got beat in a Friday night. And so
this year when Oklaoma State went to South Alabama, was like,
(01:38:15):
as long as they're not going to Troy, right, those
dudes can play well unless you made that mistake. This
weekend is they welcomed in Troy uh to their friendly
confines and played him on homecoming and got beat Their
head coach Neil Brown joins us on the Doug Gotling Show. Coach,
how are you doing well? Doug? I appreciate you having
me on. That's that's a good memory people. You know,
(01:38:37):
the little known fact about that game is the post conference,
the press conference immediately following that game is uh has
become has become a bigger story than that actual game.
But right, that was the I'm a man, I'm I'm
a man, I'm forty right. Yeah, that's exactly right, That's
exactly right. But uh, yeah, that was that was that
was a huge win. That was that was good, really
(01:38:57):
good memory. I was on Friday night and we sat
only beat beat your cowboys that night and uh and
that was that was here at home. But that was
a big win. I know, I know. It's one of
those deals to you guy who the health schedules Troy?
Why are you playing Troy? Which is exactly what ed
or run must have gone in and said, like to
his opin, like who who who decided Troy to come
in and play? How this? How do this game actually
(01:39:20):
come to be? It's been on the it's been on
the calendar for on the schedule for a while. Um,
it's a game that makes sense just because from a
geographic location. That's uh, We're gonna play one financial game
a year. That's kind of our scheduling philosophy was were
gonna play one financial game and then we're gonna play
two home and homes and then an SCS opponent. Our
(01:39:40):
nine con schedule, we play eight conference games. And but
this has been on the calendars we've had. We've had
two really close losses to the l s U. One
in two thousand four h where it was before I
got here, but we were Troy was winning twenty seventeen
and l s U then coached by by coach Saban
scored um with about three minutes ago to win the game.
(01:40:03):
And then I was the offense coordinator in O eight.
We were actually this almost embarrassing to tell we were
winning the game one, two three. L s U has
the biggest on homecoming. Um. L s U has our biggest,
biggest uh turnaround in school history. Yeah, and and they
beat us there. Um, and look that you guys wasn't
(01:40:24):
like you guys are coming off a bad season, right,
I mean ten and three last year. Give me your
in terms of how you thought the game would go
and how it would go like they they were completely
different in the first half and they had been you know,
Matt Kendall's offense has all this motion and the shifting,
you know, a lot of a lot of side to side,
you know, a lot of lateral throws, and yet they
kind of tried to line up in old school kind
(01:40:46):
of ground and pound you in the first half. Is
that what you expected? Yeah, we did. You know, I
always pay attention to the posing coaches press conferences during
the week and what they're saying to the media, and
and coach Orgeron had had talked about being a field
of a football team and getting downhill, and so we
were prepared for that. You know. The thing with Matt
Canada is he's getting some scrutiny right now, but he
(01:41:08):
was probably his offensive Pitt was probably the most watched
offense by any um, by other offensive coaches in the country.
I mean, you look at what a lot of the
teams in the NFL are doing through the first three
or four weeks of the season. A lot of it
is piggybacking off what he did at Pitt. And so
that's a guy that is really innovative, um, and he's
getting he's coming under some scrutiny now, but he's one
(01:41:29):
of the better offensive coaches in the country. But we did.
We prepared, you know, I think that's the this This
wasn't a flute. I think you watched some of the game.
This wasn't a fluke. We we didn't trick. We didn't
gimmick these guys. We lined up and played big boys
football and one in big boys style by running the football,
stopping the ruin in billion specially are playing solid on
(01:41:49):
special teams. No, it's not just that, but you were
the more physical team. How is it? I think what
happens is the average college football fan, what average football
fan says. Look l s U as the most kids
in the NFL. They've always been recruiting. Well, there is,
she has been a quarterback. The problem is never upfront,
especially coming off less miles. As an old offensive lineman,
(01:42:10):
old offensive line coach, how is it that your team
was more physical at the point of attack? Well, we
were more physical. I wouldn't say on every single play,
but consistently over the course of four quarters, we were
the more physical football team. Um our offensive defensive line. Uh,
I wouldn't say dominated, but one their fair share of
(01:42:30):
bottles at the line of scrimmage. I felt like our
running back Jordan Song was the best player on the
football field on Saturday night. He had thirty carries, hundred
ninety one yards in a touchdown and really had some
huge runs after contact. Um. But I think it goes
back to we as a program. We we went into
this game with a huge ship on our shoulder because
(01:42:52):
for a number of years now, we felt like that
we were one of the better programs in the group
of five. We won five conference championships. We want we had,
We'd had huge wins at home. You mentioned o Colo
State game. We've been Missouri here. Um, the only road
win in our division in our brief Division one history,
and we we went Division one in two thousand four.
Was that was that Mississippi State and that was during
(01:43:13):
our transitional period. But we've come close so many times.
I mean we're talking about who's who've caught. We go
to Allow State, you know, Florida State, Tennessee, l s
U two different times, Georgia. I mean, all those programs
with either a lead or within one score in the
fourth quarter, and we didn't win. And part of the
reason we didn't win were turnovers and then giving up
big plays in the return game. And we talked about
(01:43:34):
to our kids all week, and we knew it was
gonna be a four core game. And they respond and
they're really hungry. And in our experience against Clemson last year,
we lost bus six points at the eventual national champions
and our kids had a lot of confidence and they
played physical football, they played with the chip on the shoulder,
and we were the hunger of football team in that game.
I gotta ask you, though, you know you're up seventeen
(01:43:55):
nothing and then fourteen they scored a touchdown and then
you guys, then you guys fumble, right, four player? Who
has to do fumble? It was it was our best,
our best running back, right. So yeah, you guys marching
down the field. It's about But wait, it's fourteen. Now,
(01:44:16):
remember as you told us, and I think they mentioned
during the game, which you know you were offensive coordine,
your biggest comeback in l s U history. There had
to be all, hell, no, this is not gonna happen again. Fourteen.
What are you saying into the headset? Well, I try
to stay calm. I really think your your football team
is always a director reflection of how you respond to situation.
(01:44:38):
Your response your players are gonna mirry your response. So
I had a lot of confidence in our guys. We
were such a different team, and I was matured and
personally as a coach a lot over the in two thousands,
first year I ever called plays as an offensive coordinator,
UM two thousand and seventeen, I've been doing it for
an extended period of time. I feel like I'm matured,
(01:44:58):
understand how to manage games better, and I knew we
had the ability to run the ball. The clock was
on our on our side at that point, and we
made them drive. They scored off that turnover, but they
took a took too much time, but too much. They
took a lot of it it. They took a lot of
time off the clock. And but you do anytime you've
been in experience, like like losing the thirty one to three,
(01:45:21):
that always creeps back into your mind. You always think
about it. But I've really had confidence in our guys
that were gonna get it done. It's one They did
score that touchdown and you guys are lining up to
feel the onside kick. What do you what do you
tell your what do you tell your your hands? Team?
You gotta have courage, That's what it is. And you're
gonna get hit on the play which our kids John
Johnson recovered the which is a great story. He's a
(01:45:43):
local kid from right here in Troy, Alabama, and he
gets he recovers the game winning played on the onside kick.
Uh for the most signific I don't say it's the
biggest win. We won three national championships, so it's not
the biggest win. But it's the most significant win in
our Division one history. And he makes the play, so
I think it's a fitting in. But just have courage?
Does it? Have courage? All right? And you end up
(01:46:04):
you punted? They got the ball back into an interception,
but it was it was too it was too tough
road to hoe to get them back. I want to
ask you about the winning the one double A national
championships as opposed to being an FBS to which you're
the likelihood of ever getting a shot at the college
football playoff is slim, if not, if not none, like
in truth, is it better to go D one where
you don't get a shot to say you're a national
(01:46:25):
championship as opposed to the way it used to be. Well,
let me ask I'll turn the question back on you.
If if we're an SCS if we're an FCS school,
are you have are you having me on this radio show?
You know what I mean? Probably because probably yeah. And
we were the lead. We were the leads story um
(01:46:46):
in college football on Saturday night, we were the lead.
We were a lead on Sports Center through Sunday afternoon, UM,
when the NFL games got over. So the publicity that
the Division one football has brought to this university and
the opportunities it's it's allowed us to grow. We're we're
sitting on a campus that has you're a basketball guy,
(01:47:07):
We've got as nice as basketball. We got the nicest
basketball are in the state of Alabama. UM. We've got
huge investments in dormitories, new cafeteria, education, a building, redonne,
our business building. UM. There's all kinds of things that
have happened since we made the decision to go to
Division one football. And I don't think that I don't know.
I don't know if our university grows at the same rate,
(01:47:29):
if if if our leadership didn't make that decision. Stug
got liba show Fox Sports trade Neil Brown joining US
Troy's head football coach. That just pulled off an incredible
upset beat l s U at l s U on homecoming.
Who has the controls of Troy's Twitter account? Well, you're
asking about the university account. Um, I don't that that.
(01:47:51):
I don't know how many times I got retweeted. Um,
but our athletic department does not does not control that.
All right? I mean, give are you thought? I mean,
everybody I know thought it was funny, But I don't know.
Here's the deal. It was. It is funny all right
when I when I initially saw it, I laughed. Um
(01:48:11):
when I tweeted that from my personal account. The answers no, uh.
With our athletics people pointed out, No. Um. The biggest
thing is we have all the respect in the world
for l s U. Al Right, one of the premier
programs in the country. Um. They did schedules for homecoming.
That that is fact. Um what I told them, absolutely not.
(01:48:34):
Did it did it work? Did it bring further publicity? Yes?
All right. Look you can do a victory laugh when
you win the game, you know. I mean, it's I
find I find that. I found I found it to
be lighthearted. I wouldn't I wouldn't lose any sleepover. Doesn't
sound like no, I didn't. I didn't. It was it's funny,
you know, and it's it's I used it as a
(01:48:55):
use a couple of things as a learning point in
our team meeting today. But you know it, thanks uch
fire and and that caught fire. I mean it, it's
that was when we were on Sports Center. That was
that tweet was up was on the screen, which is
which is unbelievable. It actually is a really great teaching point,
right Like one tweet from a university ac count that nobody,
(01:49:16):
you know, no one in collegeball normally follows all of
a sudden, now it goes viral. It does show the
power of one tweet. It's a great lust. Well, listen,
I know you got South Alabama up coming in a
little over a week. To be hard to get your guys, uh,
hard to get you guys back up, I'm sure after
that incredible win. But I hope you do it, and
I appreciate you join us. So I appreciate it. I'll
tell you, your basketball guy, our basketball team took Dook
(01:49:38):
to the wire last year, and we've got everybody back.
We've got a chance. All right, we'll put it. We'll
put him down on Cinderella Watch. Thanks so much, Neal. Alright,
that's coach Neil Brown joining us on the Doug Gottlip
Show Troy, Alabama. Did you guys find anything wrong with
that with the with the Troy University tweet? Thank you
(01:49:59):
for the high hospitality they did. Put us on home
I don't put us on homecoming. Somebody's got to be homecoming.
Dan Bayer joins us. What do you got, Dan? We
lost every homecoming in high school, so it didn't matter
who we played, it was usually a win for them.
By the way, thank you to Troy for saving what
was in Oklahoma State. You're alma mater. Doug for what
(01:50:22):
was a pretty blah college football Saturday. Thank you to
the Cowboys and to Troy because Oklahoma State Texas. That
was a good game. Yeah, it was a It was
a good game on Saturday night. But Clemson just destroyed
Virginia Tech and the rest of the matchups really not
much to write home about. The best game almost was
Friday night USC in Washington State USC and Washington State.
(01:50:44):
My boy, uh, Dusty Divorceeck ended up called that one
for for the Worldwide lad He did a great job,
you know, like look I thought that Sam Donald he
was under pressure the whole night because they had all
those backups in the offensive line. But yeah, it was
not a great college We thought it wasn't gonna be
a great college football Saturday. It wasn't a great college
football saturday anyway. Go, So thank you Polkes, and thank
(01:51:05):
you Troy, Thank you to the uh let's uh let's
thank How about the Kansas City Chiefs. They're the only
team that remains unbeaten in the National Football League. Tonight
they wrap up Week four at home against the Washington
Redskins eight thirty Eastern time. You know, the rest of
the NFL all thirty one one other teams now have
a loss. After the Falcons felt to the Bills yesterday,
Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota was lost for the day. At
(01:51:29):
halftime he had a hamstring strain, but he's now day
to day. The Titans saying that loss or after that
loss to the Texans, Vikings rookie running back Dalvin Cook
it's gonna miss the rest of the season. Toris a
cal and yesterday's lost to the Detroit Lions, Vikings said.
Coach Mike Zimmer did say the quarterback Sam Bradford does
have a chance to play against the Bears coming up
in Week five. He's missed the last three games. The
(01:51:49):
Bears are gonna start Mitchell Trobisky in that Week five
match up against the Vikings, replacing Mike Glennon. That's according
to ESPN. That game a week from tonight on Monday
Night Football, some news and baseball twin skip for Paul
Moller says Miguel Sae will likely start, but not start
their wild card game, and we'll be on the bench
against the Yankees. So no miss six weeks because of
a fracture in the ship. Sale of the Marlins went
(01:52:10):
through today, according to the Miami Herald, to Derek Jeter
and Bruce Sermon and that group in the University of
Louis Felle, Louisville Athletic Association board has started the process
of terminating Rick Patino's contract with cause um A couple
of things. I want to run buy you, buyer. I
know you're gonna join us with with the press upcoming.
No one didn't think it was. It was. It was
(01:52:30):
an eventuality, right with with Minchell Traviski, Yes, yes, I
would say for certain, Yeah, for certain, Okay, best hat
of the of the Major League Baseball playoffs. Right, you
can only wear one hat. You're a Brewer fan, you
have to buy one hat. Who's the hat? Because you
know baseball it's all about I was telling my son
yesterday in baseball, he's got he was out there and
(01:52:52):
and some of the kids don't have a hat. It's
like your baseball player wear a hat? Where a hat? Um?
What's your favorite hat of the of the of the
team of the teams. Because I am not a traditional
I don't like the Dodger, Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs for
fashion senses, I will go Houston, Astros, Houst Nastrow old
(01:53:12):
school uniformer, news school. Um, that's that's always now. I
like the Chief Waho version of the Indians hat. I
know there's a lot of pressure for them to wear
the sea but during the wind streak, I believe they
were achieved wah who the entire time, so they probably
were achieved. Wah who A bunch? What about you music?
If you you have to wear one hat, one major
League Baseball hat in the playoffs, you gotta wear one hat.
(01:53:36):
I would go Cubs. I like the Cubs hat iconic. Yeah,
it's just got a good class Yankee Yankees is iconic,
so is Dodgers, Like we got some you know, yeah,
the baseball on the baseball playoffs this year has got
some blue bloods and it does and honestly like you
do actually have. The Washington Nationals were a old school
baseball team and they went to the old school logo
when they invented the team when they brought them down
(01:53:57):
from Montreal. One other, one other point that I think
is what is so unique and I wouldn't go this
route just because of the proximity where I grew up.
But the Twins TC hat with the Twin Cities is
so it's so classic because it just represents that area.
It's not doesn't say Minneapolis. There wasn't a Saint Paul.
The TC is very unique as well. You know. It's
(01:54:18):
interesting about the Twins is I remember their teams that
want it, Like there's a lot of Major League Baseball
playoffs that like, I've a race from my memory, but
I remember current and her back Corse. Remember Kirby Puckett,
right like I remember uh Frankie Sweet music Viola, Remember
Chuck Knoblock, I Like, I remember that was a those
(01:54:41):
are memorable teams, the Homer Doome, Dan Gladden. Yeah, we
do run into the possibility. It's not a likelihood because I,
like the rest of the world. I'm not even a
Yankee fan. I'm a kind of a Yankee fan because
my because holidays, my boy plays the Yankees, but I'm
not necessarily a Yankee fan. I like the rest of
the world. Want I do want the Yankees to win
because I want to I want to see the blue
(01:55:03):
Bloods play. But we do run the possibility. You know,
Minnesota plays in an open air park, and the longer
they go, the longer they win this thing, the more
ridiculously bad the weather is likely to be, to which
somebody's like, wait, maybe we shouldn't have done the open
air park in Minneapolis St. Paul when now, when it opened,
there was no hope that they would go to the playoffs, right,
(01:55:25):
there's just no hope. Now it's like, okay, well, look,
we want you to win, but we don't want you
to win too much because then you're gonna play in
the late October and what if we have to call
a World Series game because of snow that could happen.
We can see the Twins winter hats that the debut
in late October. I love postseason baseball. I just like, look,
(01:55:46):
if you don't get into it, that's fine. I'm just
I think you're missing out on how riveting sports television
is because every pitch matters, one play does matter. And
this is really the best there. There aren't any fluke
teams that got in, they just aren't. And those are
These are the ten best teams in the sport. And
(01:56:07):
it's not really even that close, like the Brewers are
the one. Brewers are the one team that could lay
a little bit acclaim to it. But and it's really
hard to judge the Rockies based upon you know where
they play in the part, how big that park is.
But these are the ten best teams in the sport
I have. I have the utmost confidence in saying that
that doesn't happen in most sports. In the n c
(01:56:28):
A tournament, the best teams do not play in it
because they have these bottom of the Division one teams
to get automatic bursts. And you have teams are below
five get in in the NFL because divisional winners get in.
Sometimes you don't always have the These are the ten
best teams but True Car you can find out what
other people in the area paid for the same car
you're looking for new or use. Visit True car to
(01:56:49):
enjoy more confident car buying the experience. How long will
the Warriors be able to keep their super team together?
I'll tell you next what True Car You can find
out what other people in your area paid for the
same car you're looking for new or used. Visit True
Car to enjoy more confident car buying experience. So CBS
is backtracking on Tom Petty being dead. This is like, um,
(01:57:14):
Joe Paterno thing right. Joe Paterno was dead, then he
wasn't dead, then he was dead. Um, apparently Tom Petty
won't back down, right, all right? Sorry, I had bad bad.
It's not bad bad. I like Tom Petty. I mean,
but we thought he was gone and he's not gone.
That's good. It's good. This is good news. This is
(01:57:38):
good news. He's not all the way dead. He was
mostly dead, right, which means someone alive. They just need
to call Miracle Max. That's you, guys, don't that's a movie,
no idea promost. You know that one, don't you? I
do not? I know Mad Max. Princess Bride. I never
(01:57:59):
I never like that movie. You saw the movie, you
just don't remember you never likes No, it was kind
of corny to me, that fun star in the cast.
It was supposed to be corny. It was to corny. Then, Oh,
it's great, Andre the Giant and you don't remember Andre
the Giant? Inconceivable? What's that guy named? Inconceivable? Anyway, let's
(01:58:20):
get to the press, the press inconceivable there. Yeah, Well,
just to go off of what you said. With Tom
Petty's situation, TMZ is reporting that his family chose to
take him off of life support. He had to do
not resuscitate on him, so he is it's it's probably
(01:58:41):
going to happen. It's just the rush to announce it
is what we get in today's news media. I mean,
as soon as TMZ reported that, people are already tweeting
tributes with r A P. Tom Petty, nothing official from
the family. The l a p D had to send
out a tweet saying that they did not confirm his
death and try to clarify the situation that they don't
have any role with it. As you mentioned, CBS News
(01:59:01):
so that he was dead and now I said, no,
that's not the case, then the information they got was wrong.
But it's it's not good news. We'll just put it
that way, and it's it's likely to end in a
in a bad way. But it just hasn't happened. So yeah,
unless Tom Petty tweet like, hey I'm not dead, probably
not going to happen for the news that we have
heard out By the way, Doug, your hat conversation sparked
(01:59:23):
a worst hat conversation that we had in the in
the during the break in the newsroom with John and Baseball. Yeah,
I don't think it's close at least this an easy one,
but go ahead, Diamondbacks came up is one that was
one that we didn't like. Of these playoff teams. It's
it's obviously the worst. It's not even close, not even close. Yes, correct, um,
(01:59:47):
the worst. I think the worst hat in baseball is
the Oakland A's, right, Like really, I mean, how can
you find anything that goes with with Hunter, green and yellow.
It's just not a cool at at all. The only
like the A's can kind of pull it off. It's
like the Green Bay Packers can pull it off because
they're the Green Bay Packers. But like wearing that hat
(02:00:09):
around is hard, whereas I think the Orioles is probably
the coolest classic hat. The classic Orioles one of my favorites.
Detroit with the old English d is really cool. Like
go around. I mean, all the new teams have bad hats,
all of the Miami Marlins bad, Diamondbacks bad, whereas all
the old teams San Francico Giants good. We gave credit
(02:00:31):
to the Tampa Bay Rays because they realized how dumb
it was having a ray on their hat for a while,
and then they got rid of the Devil Rays and
then just the simple TV And while it may not
have caught on mainstream dug at least it's just simple
and it's there, and you know that's who they are.
The two thousand people that go to raise games really
appreciate the Vikings rookie running back Dalvin Cook done for
(02:00:51):
the year towards a c L yesterday against the Detroit
trade for Adrian Peterson. Like Adrian Peterson gets no no burn.
They don't need him in New Orleans, right, Kamara's way
way better fit for what they wanted. Do they got
to Really, he's their third best running back, doesn't fit
Bring him back, trade for him, trade like a seventh
round pick for him done. That will be interesting to
(02:01:12):
see if that conversation takes place. The Bears are gonna
start Mitchell Trobinsky at quarterback in Week five against the
Vikings when they play on Monday Night Football, according to ESPN,
and we'll see if the Vikings have Sam Bradford. But
I think this was about like, look, Glennon had gotten
whatever shot he was gonna get. He was bad, and
you have they played on a Thursday, they played on Monday.
(02:01:32):
He's gonna get the most possible prep and he's playing
at home. This is best chance to succeed. And as
Jared Golf has has proven, you can be terrible in
your first year and be better in the second year.
You get an offensive minded head coach, which is what
the what the Bears will probably do. Trade for a
bunch of wide receivers, get better talent around you. But
Mitchell Trobinsky that that era is beginning. On Monday Night,
(02:01:54):
Titans quarterback Marcus marioa just day to day with a
hamstring strained. Good news for the Titans, and of course
yesterday's other big news Derek Carr. It was after the
game that Raiders said. Coach Jack del Rio said that
he was dealing with back spasms, but no new update
on Derek Carr situation. I thought the wide receiver's really
Leddy j Manuel down and uh, who's there? Who's their
(02:02:15):
tight end? Um Jared Cook. Yeah, he dropped. He dropped
one right in the endzone. Now and look he got
leveled right after dropped. But on their next to last
drive he dropped on the end zone. He's got a
catch and the Raiders win that game. Uh, you know,
Plus Marie Cooper's got like eight drops already this year.
I mean, like in his hand drops that shouldn't happen
to Marie Cooper. The wide receivers did not help EJ.
(02:02:36):
Manuel and they have not been helping Derek Carr nearly
like they should. Warriors Cark Clay Thompson is a free
agent and a couple of years but told The Athletic
Podcast that while he could see himself sticking around, no
intention of leaving. I don't know home here, I have
roots here, don't really see myself leaving. And it's like
to play for the Warriors as long as I could,
you know, especial when someone could play for one franchise
(02:02:56):
for as long as they can, and people still asked
me about free ahs to years away. I'm not even
worried about that. I also said he would maybe take
a pay cut to stay with the Warriors, just maybe
not as big as one as Kevin Durant. Everybody says
they'll take a pay cut until they get asked to
take a pay cut, like, oh, I totally take a
pay cut. You want to take one because the Lakers
wouldn't give you a pay cut? Like no, be all right?
I still I still like the only team he'll leave
(02:03:17):
for I think would be the Lakers. I think you
can leave it the Lakers. There was a lot of
talk in that podcast as well about the Dodgers, as
you know, with his brother a part of the franchise
of Baseball Talk and We'll plus his dad works for Lakers.
Dad called games Lakers. Dad's a former Laker. He's from
southern California. That would get out there and pressed. That
was the press herd Mark Slayreth called the Charger game. Yeah,
(02:03:39):
Sterraight thought he did a great job. He'll be joined
us tomorrow. Uh. Mike Leach, of course, had a big
upset over over USC on Friday Night, were we're gonna
take that to do that live because Leach can go now,
do it live? Do it live? All right, we'll see
how many what's the over underrun number of questions? I
can get in with Leach three and a half because
he can get really now, he can get really short,
(02:04:01):
he can get like short, choppy answers, but then he
can go long and give you a really thought like
he's super super interesting. Anyway, how do we like tonight?
I like the Skins. I kind of like the Skins.
Stuck Outlip Show, Fox Sports Radio
