Speaker 1 (00:00):
Boom, What Up America. Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio,
coming to you from the City of Angels, where we're
told Major League Baseball's playoffs get underway. Only it's a
play in game tonight, arguably the most important play in
game in the history of the play in game since
(00:20):
baseball started the play in game couple of years ago.
Yankees taken on the Twins. Look, Minnesota, you cute your
lovely I can't wait to be there for Super Bowl Week,
can't wait to be there. But no one really wants
you here, right, just no one? Really? This is the
this is the really, this is the really, really, really nice,
(00:42):
reputable girl at a wild party. Like, Look, you don't
want to be around here. Come on, man, stuff is
gonna go on here after dark. You don't want any
part of So Thanks Twins, but everyone's rooting for the Yankees.
TV has rotten for the Yankees, radio's rotten of the Yankees,
major League Baseball rooting for the Yankees. And what's interesting,
(01:04):
maybe or most interesting about it is the fact that
the Twins have on multiple occasions gotten a chance to
take down the Yankees in a series and have been
unable to win in Yankee Stadium. Now you get you
cannot get a better a better scenario for the Twins, right,
they just now got their best player back healthy. The
(01:26):
Yankees are starting a complete unknown in regards to a
year old starter. We have no idea how he'll play
in the pressure of a one game playing game, playoff,
and all you have to do is win one game.
But no one's rooting for you. All right, more on
that to come. Last night, in what I think was
a fantastic Monday night football game, no question, bad beat.
(01:48):
If you had the Skins as I did, if you
had the over, if you had the under, excuse me.
If you had the Skins and the underboy, that was
a that was a bad way to end a great
football game. But um look it ends up. The Kansas
City Chiefs remain undefeated. Just you know, the line was
(02:08):
a seven and a half and forty eight and a
half was I believe the overunder number. But the Kansas
City Chiefs win a game and Kareem Hunt continues to
be the story of the quarter pole. But but this
is one of those forgive me, Kansas City if I
(02:30):
don't take you as seriously as I should. I mean,
like look justin Houston is and they have unbelievable talent
at certain spots. Houston is their rush end. Hunt has
their running back Trek Hill, who you feel like, at
any point in time, could catch the ball, could take
(02:51):
a handoff, could uh field the punt, could take a
kick off to the house. He is that sort of
out at any point in time, That's what this guy
could do. And though Alex smith Is is maligned. Though
(03:12):
Alex smith Is is maligned, it's also safe to say
that Alex Smith is steady as she she goes right.
He's been in the playoffs. He's been in the NFC
Championship game. He's played pretty well in the NFC Championship game.
He's one playoff Cans before they've done some good things.
And um, look, he's one playoff game for the KNC Chiefs,
(03:34):
something that no one else has done for twenty years.
And they've got some good quarterbacks. But what happened here
on the way to the KANC Chiefs becoming quote unquote
the best team in the NFL is they're not really
the best team in the NFL. They're the best team
available in the NFL. Let me tell you the difference
(03:56):
between the two. We came into the year thinking that
the New England Patriots some believe they had a chance
to go undefeated right coming off a Super Bowl winning year,
Rob Gronkowski back healthy as he was injured last season.
They made additions on offense, I mean additions on defense,
adding guys in like Stefan Gilmore, adding in help on
(04:19):
the defensive front, adding in new running backs, adding in
Brandon Cooks is a wide receiver to take off the
top of a defense. All of that stuff led us
to believe, Hey, maybe the New England Patriots could go
in defeat him. And to this point their defense looks
terrible and worse yet confused. On the other hand, the
(04:41):
offense is actually quite good, even though the offense is
playing without Julian Edelman for the entire season. Patriots, or
just two and two and maybe mean more troubling for
your New England There one and two at home, they
get up a hundred and twenty eight points on the season.
Uh that is second most in the NFL by a
large margin. Tennessee's given up one, the Colts have given
(05:05):
up one thirty six, So it's those three and outside
of that only two other teams are getting up over
a hundred points this year, but because their defense is
still being put together, they're still trying to figure out.
They're still new. You can't consider the Patriots among the
NFL's the league. We thought it was the Patriots and
we're not. The Pittsburgh Dealers somehow lost to the Buffalo
(05:27):
lost to the Chicago Bears, and though they're three and one,
they're kind of a disappointing three in one. Antonio Brown
has been ticked. Ben Roethlisberger has been great, Levyan Bell
wasn't sharp. This is the same Pittsburgh Steeler team that
beat the Kansas City Chiefs on the road last year
in the playoffs. Uh, the Houston Texans took a while
(05:52):
to figure out who their quarterback was. The Denver Broncos
are three and one, but they've only won their three
home games. The Oakland Raiders have lost two road games,
plus Derek Harry is hurt, and so teams that we
thought should be since Nanty Bengals were terrible to start
the year, changed coordinators and suddenly now are decent on
the offensive side of the ball. These are teams we
(06:12):
thought had a chance to be the best team in
the a f C then the NFC. The Cowboys have
played a more difficult schedule. They're just two and two.
The Lions no one takes seriously as an elite team,
but have been pretty damn good. The Green Bay Packers
have had all kinds of injuries and fell to Atlanta
and they're only there three and one on the season.
(06:33):
The Atlanta Falcons are three and one. They lost this
past weekend at home to those same Chicago but no
to the Buffalo Bills. They didn't have Mohamed sanw didn't
have Julio Jones, the Rams of the surprise team because
the Seahawks. The point is that I guess it's because
of record. I guess it's because they've beat in New England.
In New England, Kana City has been good. I they
(06:58):
beat San Diego in San Diego. They eat the Eagles
at home, two at home, two on the road, including
beating the Patriots and the Redskins. Two people. Two teams.
People think our playoff teams. But if you had to
bet every dollar you had on one team in the
NFL winning a Super Bowl, would it be the Chiefs.
(07:20):
Maybe that's history, Maybe that's Andy Reid Maybe that's Alex Smith.
Maybe it's just can't see Chiefs franchise history. I'm not
really sure, but it kind of feels like you went
out thinking, man, I can't wait to have sushi to night.
We gotta sitter, gonna get some sushi. And then you
remember my wife doesn't like sushi. Well, my wife actually
(07:42):
never tried sushi. She's aluric to soy and doesn't like fish.
All right, check that off. I'm like, you know what,
Chick fil A down the street. Oh, I love chick
fil A. You know what, screw going out to a
restaurant paying the tip. I'm just gonna go to Chick
fil A get some sweet tea with my wife. And
it's Sunday, Chick fil A is not open, you know,
I'm gonna I'm gonna go to that new Mexican place
(08:02):
my buddy's been telling about. They have this carne asada
which is remarkable, remarkable. You pull up huge line outside
by the time you get to the front. Sorry, sir,
we don't have any carnia sada. So what do you do?
What do you do? Like? Mm hmm, I guess I'll
take some fish tacos, which were delicious. Nothing wrong with
(08:25):
some Encinada style flip fish tacos, some refried beans, chips, salsa, guawk,
maybe a little or chata right, nice meal, lovely. Was
it what you intended initially intended, thought you would get. No?
Was it your second best option? No? Was your third option?
(08:45):
Not really, but nothing wrong with it. Maybe it's the
fact that you didn't go out that night thinking why
I could really use some fish tacos. Maybe it's the
fact that we didn't go out thinking cancer. Chiefs. They
since midpoint of a season and a half a go,
they've probably been the most consistent best team in the NFL.
And no one coaches him up better in the regular
season than Andy Reid, and he puts his team in
(09:07):
position to succeed in the postseason even if he hasn't
had an elite quarterback to take him over the top.
All that would be fair, But the fact is the Cancer.
The Chiefs are your fourth, fifth option. We are settling
on them. They are not the best team, They're the
best available at this point right. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts
(09:28):
is going to join the show upcoming next. I want
to get his thoughts on what this season has been
like from the inauspicious beginning to the remarkable middle to
the wildly disappointing end. The decisions about bullpen, decisions about starters,
(09:52):
and how to get over the hump of Dodgers playoff
runs in the past. Dave Roberts, who of course was
part of that world series, the most famous stolen base
in Red Sox history, world series winning and streak breaking
Boston Red Sox team, will join us up coming. That's
next in the Doug Outlet Show, Fox Sports Radio. Here's
(10:17):
the select Quote difference. Most companies give you one option,
one policy, one rate, but select Quote gives you options
lots of options. I want you to give select qute
of called eight one, four, four, six six, or go
to select quote dot com today for a totally free
personal quote. Mm hmmm, Doug ot Lip Show, Fox Sports Radio.
(10:45):
Uh boy, we got um. We had so much to
discuss with with Dave Roberts, the skipper of the l
A Dodgers, who will join us momentarily getting ready uh tonight,
major League Baseball's playing game. These are not you'll be
told of the playoffs. They're not playoffs being playoffs series.
These are playing for the right to play in the playoffs.
(11:08):
But Dave Roberts shows how this works. Man, every decision
you make from this point forward will be hyper uh
hyper scrutinized, as was every decision he made last year
in the NLCS. So we'll try and figure out how
we characterized this year, what the kind of mental and
physical health of the Dodgers is. As the skipper for
(11:30):
the Dodger will jointus Momentarily, Do you guys see this
news that just came down about the NBA. The NBA
is restructuring. They're all star game format. H They're gonna
have captains, pick sides, playground style. I think they're going
halfway with it. We'll talk about that in a moment.
Plus we'll talk about LaMelo ball apparently now gonna be
(11:55):
homeschool to not play high school basketball. Alright, more on
that to come. Let's get to baseball. Obviously, the best
time of the year for the sport. We reached October
and the team that at one point in time seemed
destined to break the all time mark for regular season
wins ho hum, only ended up with the most wins
in the regular season in baseball. It's kind of the
(12:16):
way they got there is more interesting than the fact
that got to the hundred plus wins. Dave Robert, skipper
of the Dodgers, joins us on the Doug Gotlip Show. Dave,
how are you okay? I'm doing well. How are you
doing good? How would you characterize your season? Uh? Characterize
our season very successful. Um. We set out to win
(12:36):
as many games a regular season and win the division
and and that's what we did. We set up to
do something, we accomplished it. So very successful. Okay, but
you look, the season started kind of whole hum about
forty games in and then all of a sudden you
were beating everybody like at at the at the very
very peak, you were what ninety one and thirty six,
and then the bottom fell out. What happened? Uh, I
(13:01):
think a combination of things that that's the hitting the
pitching just went south at the same time. And when
that happened, it is tough to in baseball game. So yeah,
that that two and a half week stretch was something
that was unwent precedented. So I'm glad we weathered it
and we righted the show. Yeah, you want eight under
(13:22):
your last ten to finish the season with the best record.
In the league one oh four and fifty eight. Um,
you weren't freaking out, at least to the media, right,
you didn't appear to be losing your mind to the media.
But inside or when you would close you know, every
every major league baseball locker room has, you know, a
manager's office, when you'd close that door, and you had
(13:42):
your coaching staff around at at any point in time
losing sixty seventeen where you're freaking out, I wouldn't say
freaking out because obviously we put ourselves in a very
good position, you know, prior to that stretch. But it
was a point of you know, you're asking the coaches
and and you're asking yourself, can we do anything different?
Can we do anything better? Um? And for me, it
(14:04):
was just that same answer as we just got to
continue to move forward. You know, guys are playing hard,
preparing the same way. We're just not winning baseball games.
So that was kind of the mindset. There was definitely
no panic in our clubhouse, and fortunately things turned around
and I think that we're in a good place going
into Friday. So we'll get ready for for Friday. But
(14:25):
you personally, um, what have you learned from the past
that prepares you for this playoff run. Um, well, I
I think that. I think the thing is is that
every playoff game is essentially a must win game, and
it's very unpredictable. So I think that to have everyone
(14:45):
everyone on board for whatever situation that presents itself. Um,
I think that obviously for me, having the already gone
through the coaches and the players, I think it expected
to slow down a little bit, and I think that
we we played well, got through it last year and
had a lot of fun. But again, I think my
main point in my main takeaways, it is so unpredictable
(15:06):
and just to have all the guys ready for whatever
role that might be expected or unexpected. You know, the
two teams in the Nation League West that are gonna
play in the playoff game, uh, both of them had
success against you, especially the Diamondbacks. Now I know it
wasn't always your top starters going against them, good thing
or bad thing. That you actually didn't have success against,
(15:28):
especially the Diamondbacks in the regular season. Honestly, I don't
even know what our what our record versus Diamonds BACS was,
and I don't think that anyone cares. I don't think
that we care about who we play, and there is
something to the regular season versus the postseason. So I
don't think that if we had our way with them
or they had our way with us. Conversely, it would
(15:48):
have really mattered, because right now we've got a five
game series against either one of those teams, and all
I know is our guys are gonna be prepared. Okay,
So what about Kershaw? You know, look, look, he missed
some time in the middle of the regular season, which
many people think will allow him to be sharper as
opposed to worn down getting ready for the postseason. What's
your sense of Kersh heading into the postseason where in
(16:10):
spite of the fact that his his regular season career
is as good as anybody we have ever seen in
the sport. Uh, the narrative is, hey, seventh innings, more
specifically against the Cardinals have have have been his undoing.
Even if he's had you last year, He's had some
great starts, even on short rest. What's your sense of
Kersh heading into the playoffs. I'm happy he's on our team.
(16:32):
I know that I know he's gonna be starting Game one,
and uh, there's not a manager in baseball that wouldn't
want him as their number one guy. So um, I
don't think that claim is too concerned about his past,
you know, performance in the postseason. And I really honestly
that I don't know the numbers I've heard it, um,
but I think that this isolated game Game one, he's focused,
(16:54):
he's healthy, he's in a good place. Weren't a good place.
So uh. I know Dater Stay, who's gonna be Rockey?
And I know the coaching staff, myself front office. We're
all prepared, starting our work already on both these clubs,
and we expect to win one baseball game, and after
we do that, we'll be ready to go on Saturday.
Of course, everybody remembers the famous stolen base. You guys
(17:15):
down three, three games none when you remember the Red
Sox and you guys ultimately beat the came back beat
the Yankees, greatest comeback in the history of the sport,
maybe in the history of any sport. End up breaking
the curse of the Bambino winning a World Series. Not
quite those same numbers against you with the Dodgers a
ton of success historically, but haven't won a World Series since.
(17:36):
In all candor, does any of that way on these players.
Um No, I don't think so, because I think that
even when I was when when I was on that
two thousand four Red Sox team, Uh, you know, you're
talking about eighty six years, so obviously we weren't alive then.
And I know that we felt the the uh, the
(17:58):
sense of urgency from the media and the fans. But
I think that speaking for the twenty four other players
in the club US at that point in time in
two thousand four, we wanted to win a World Series
for ourselves and for the city. And I think that
there's nothing wrong with that. And I think that our
players here feel the same thing. And um, you know,
you Darvis, we just acquired at the deadline, so I
(18:18):
think that he doesn't relate to the twenty eight year
drought or twenty one year drought with the Dodgers. So
we want to win a championship here, bring it to
Los Angeles. We feel we have the team to do it,
and now it's our jobs out there and executed and
play well. What was the toughest decision you had to
make in setting your lineup? Uh, well, we're actually still
haven't finalized things. Some of it is contingent upon our
(18:40):
potential opponent. Uh, So we'll be meeting here working out
the next few days and getting together the coaches, front
office and kind of going back and forth. So it's
gonna be that the bullpen, the extra player off the bench,
and what gives the best chance to win win some games.
I mean, who the fourth starter? You know, I think
that's still we still kind of wonder about that. Um,
But I mean like, look, these are all kind of
(19:02):
good do you have? You have first world problems, right,
you have too many starters, too few starters. Yeah, we've
got the first world problems, first high first class, high
class problems. So, um, we've got a lot of good
players here in this clubhouse and a lot of guys
that deserve to have an opportunity to be on this
postseason roster. So yeah, there's gonna be some tough conversations.
(19:22):
But I think that the at the end of the day, Um,
I know that the decisions we make in the players
all understand that these are decisions that we feel are
the best for our ball club to give us a
best chance to win a championship. Look, I I and
I'm not I'm not trying to be negative, Nancy, because
living in Los Angeles, having been to the eight eight
World Series, would love nothing more than to see you
guys win the whole thing. But um, one of the
(19:44):
things we have a tendency to do in sports, Trader,
I think fans do this is, well, Hey, if the
Dodgers don't win it, the season wasn't a success. You
won more games than anybody in the regular season, and
and you went through a level of dominance which had
never had not been seen in Dodger or Major League
Baseball history. I point out six at one point time.
So if you don't win the whole thing, can this
(20:06):
season still be seen deemed a success? Well, obviously we
we would all be uh. You know, I think that
you brought up a good point in the sense that, ah,
you look at the regular season and you look at
the ultimate gold there's only one champion. So obviously it
would be a very big disappointment for all of us
(20:27):
in the clubhouse, the organization if we don't win a championship.
But um, you know that being said, I think that
you hit on a little bit as far as being
in the media where you can want it. Um, And
I hope it happens. But I think in the clubhouse
it's more of the all in mentality where yeah, you're
setting yourself up for a big disappointment if it does happen.
(20:49):
But us in the clubhouse are only focuses to be
optimistic and expect, expecting to win a championship. And you
know right now, we can't control the World Series. We
can't control that championship series. So we're focused on whatever
opponent we have in the division series and at that
next point we're gonna try to take care of business.
Then so at the end of the season, well we'll
look at the whole body working. See. The last thing
(21:12):
is we saw this a little from Terry. We saw
actually a lot from Terry Franccona last year with his
use of his bullpen, his use of his his his
best reliever. We've seen it some from you with using
Kenley Jansen, uh sometimes in in high leveled situations, but
not in the traditional high leveled situation. What's your sense
of of just for you personally, how you choose to
(21:34):
use him. You know, like, hey, sixth inning, you got
bases loaded. Do you bring in Kenley Jansen who has
been almost unhittable this year, right in comparison to a
mineral lever who is solid, but it's it's his normal role.
How do you balance out the do I bring in
this ultimate weapon um or do I save him to
close the game but there might not be the the
(21:55):
opportunity to close the game. I think that that's a
great point. And I think at uh you know six inning,
which which we did last year in DC. Um, you know,
when you're talking about a an elimination game. But like
I said, those those uh unforeseen situations possibly could happen.
And I know that you know, Kennley is that guy.
(22:18):
He's he's our best reliever in in that highest leverage
that could be that that could be the game. So
that's something that me the coaches will definitely think long
and hard about that. And Kenley, whatever situation we have
for him, and obviously it's gonna be the highest of
leverage situations, we will deploy him. And uh he's a
big horse, he's our guy at the back end. So
um yeah, that that's the fun part about the postseason.
(22:40):
So dougs, so make sure you tune in and uh,
you know, uh rude us on. But we'll see I
will I just again, I think that's fascinating. I think
the fact that the home run rate up is up
so high that, you know, does that carry over in
the postseason? Um? You know when traditionally teams that hit
a lot of home runs can go can go stale
in the postse I I think it's I think it's
(23:01):
gonna be fascinating to watch. Listen, I know you've got
a ton of things to get to, far more important
than this. Who wish you the best of luck and
we'll talk to you soon. Alright. As Dave Roberts, who
is the skipper of the Dodgers, remember he used him
in the sixth inning in d C. Last year, we
saw all kinds of unique use of the bullpen from
Terry Francona. And the big question I think, I think
it is, you know, what do other what do other
(23:24):
managers do? Right? Like, if you have a guy who
can come in and you know, like Kenley Jansons, a
guy like of all the people on Earth I know,
can come in and get it out, why not Kenley Jansen?
And if it's six inning and you're in Game five
and you have you Darvish on the hill, and you
Darvish has gone six excuse me, has gone five and
(23:45):
two thirds, bases loaded and you're up one and nothing,
you know, and you got one out. Sorry, so he's
gone five and a third, Like, why not go to
Kenley Jansen? Like, well, you know you need him to
what I mean, you need him to close the game.
If you give up a double, there is no game
to be closed. That's why baseball is the best, because
(24:10):
things that you've done the whole year like you might
not do. And last year that's what we saw from
Terry Frank Connell, we saw some from Dave Roberts. We've
seen it, and then there's there's been others who have
decided to not do that. Let's bring in Steve to Seger. Steve,
what do you got working? Well, we'll start with the
details of what you mentioned a bit the NBA news.
(24:30):
They're changing the All Star Game format for this season.
No more East versus West. Instead, two captains will be
drafting all Stars onto their rosters. Russell Westbrook will miss
Oklahoma Cities preseason opener tonight due to minor knee issues.
Lebron James will miss Cleveland's preseason opener tomorrow with his
bad ankle five NBA exhibitions this evening, including the Clippers
(24:51):
in Hawaii against the Raptors late tonight, Golden Status in
China for preseason games against Minnesota this week. N HL
regular season starts tomorrow night, and US men soccer finishes
World Cup qualifying with games Friday and next Tuesday. Tonight
the a L Wild Card game eight pm Eastern Time,
Minnesota at the Yankees, and twin slugger Miguel Sino, with
(25:12):
twenty eight homers this year, is not active tonight. He
finally returned from a leg injury last week. Could d
h in a later round if they're still alive. Tonight's
winner goes to Cleveland to start a best of five
division series Thursday. FS one will have that Thursday game
seven thirty Eastern time. The Indians will start Trevor Bauer
in Game one, then Corey Kluber and Carlos Carrasco in
(25:33):
games two and three. I can't believe Trevor Bauer starting
Game one, and it's not gonna be necessarily an ace
for a lot of teams in Game number one. Of course,
that's the whole idea of the of the playing game,
is it takes that kind of takes the top off
of the team, right, Like it's right Arizona tomorrow, Right,
Arizona is gonna gonna start Grinky tomorrow, and so Grinky
won't get a chance to start. It would be hard
for him to start twice in that series against the Dodgers,
(25:55):
so he'll start maybe home and if well, boy, because
Robbie Ray could go twice. Certainly, he's been very good
this year. So he starts Game two in l A
and then maybe a Game five in l A. The
big thing is, though, like Bau or not Cluber. Cluber
was five and oh the point eight four e r
A and six September starts eighteen and four of the season.
(26:16):
He's going win a second. He's going to Cy Young Award.
It might just be the order of last weekend because
Carlos Carrasco just pitched last weekend, So he's not until
Game three of this best of five. Boston's gonna open
the division series at Houston Thursday, four pm Eastern time.
Game two of that series will be on FS one,
another day game in Houston. Do you believe Dave Roberts
when he says, I don't know Clayton Kershaw's postseason numbers
(26:38):
like he's got a four point five five e r A. Maybe,
but otherwise, Yeah, as long as people don't say that
he's not been good in the postseason, I've been seeing
plenty of good starts with him in the postseason last year,
for example. That's look, I'm I am the fairest of
Kershaw apologists. That that's that's uh, that's how I would
how I would determine it. I've think I still think
(27:00):
Claytonkershaw is the best left handed pictures since Sandy Kofax
and might actually better been better. It's hard because Kofax
hurt his arm and back in the time when you
couldn't fix arms um. The four point five five e
r A includes when he was a kid and not
even a starter. Though, if you say this decade when
he's been the Kershaw we know, and he's still not
as good as the regular season Kershaw, that's the point. No,
(27:21):
I mean, he started one game against the Gnats right
in the in the DS. He was great in that series.
He had two starts, those were their two wins, and
then he came out of the bullpen after Jansen to
close out Game five and they beat um hold up,
but he had he had only one start. You assume
me he started to and those two right, But he
(27:42):
also had a five point eight four right, that includes
the three runs the relievers allowed when it came out,
which is why it was good. You asked about not
going with him on short rest because that happened last
year and many other playoff years, and then you just
don't have as much in the tank. Yeah, well, no,
I mean, and the thing is he I think he
benefits from being hurt this year, right, instead of instead
of pitching what we could have said the same last year? Right?
(28:05):
But I mean, like you look, if you go last year, yes,
last year is only a huntin this year hundred seventy
five previous year two two innings, thirty three, like guys
an absolute horse and this year he didn't. Uh. And
this year, by the way, he led the lead league
in UH in the R A plus, not in the
R A but the R A plus and uh, I
think he also led it in the R A to
(28:26):
with the two point three one r A And the
guy missed all that time and could still win a
cy Young with an eighteen and four record this year. Yeah, crazy, crazy, stuff. Anyway,
that's gonna be a perception. Perception. Is Kershaw not great
in the postseason? Yes, that's the perception. And what's accurate
is his e r A is clearly higher this decade.
I'm talking about when when he's been Kershaw the dominant
(28:48):
regular season starter, the e r A is higher in
the postseason. That's gonna be a very late game Friday
night for much of the country. Game one in l
A at home against the wild card game winner. The
Cubs open up there best of five at Washington on Friday,
and Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer, with the bad hamstring, played
catch today. He'll throw a bullpen session tomorrow. So maybe
Steven Strasburg in Game one that series. Alright, great stuff,
(29:11):
Steven to Seger. Okay, so you heard this story from Steve.
I mentioned it earlier. Under revamped format, the two captains
of the NBA's All Star Game will will select from
a pool of players voted as starters and reserves, making
selections without regard to conference affiliation. So there's me twenty
four all Stars, twelve players from each conference earning spots,
(29:32):
ten starters, two guards, three front court players per conference.
Will continue to be chosen by a combination of fans
five to present the vote. Current players vote, basketball media vote. That,
by the way, weighs too strong, too heavily in favor
of the fans, but that's okay. The NBA's head coaches
will select the fourteen reserves, voting two guards, three front
court players. YadA, YadA, YadA. So I I like it,
(29:57):
but I think it's halfway like twenty four a players. Dude,
that's three teams of eight or at a player, and
do five teams of six and play like pick up all, right,
play with the clock. I don't mind if you play
(30:18):
the clock, you know, play play just a quarter, ten
minutes and then play, you know, first team to win
four games wins, everybody wins a million dollars something crazy
like that, and you know, you donate half of the
winnings to charity something like what some deal like that,
Like that would be awesome. But you can't go like, hey,
(30:39):
let's go pick up all. Only it's not really pick
up all, pick up all. There's a couple of things
that you have to remember about pick up all. Usually
the guy that calls game is the worst player, Like
I got game. I mean, I wasn't gonna get picked up,
so he got there and called game. Um guy who
opens the gym, guy who opens the gym? Always in
(31:02):
the first game. First game is always longer than the
other games, which to me is just dumb because most
times you go and play pickup ball music. Do you
ever play pick up basketball? I guess you're not pick
up beast place ramas you pick up ball player recently
or the past in general. No, not in general, but past. Yes, okay,
(31:22):
so in the past you have, uh, first game being
longer is I think the intent is, well, it's the
first game. You gotta reward guys for getting there early, whatever.
But because guys aren't lose, nobody makes shots or at
least the first game last like a half hour. You're like,
ah man, then you're tired for the rest of the game.
You wear down whoever wins, You wear down whoever comes
in and waits for the game. Like that, All that
(31:43):
stuff sucks so to me. And then here's another one
is never people say run it back and you start
taking off your shoes. It's over once you like, I
gotta go, I got my kids, got something, my wife's
got something. One don't don't put your shoes back on
once they've you've unlaced him. But I like the idea
(32:04):
of it mixing and my and matching. It still feels
like you're gonna end up getting Kevin Durant Lebron James,
and you're still gonna pick their sides and pick their
teams anyway, and you're not. You're gonna get hat fields
against the McCoy's. I think it would have been better
with three or four teams. It also proves, though, that
All Star formats are super boring. When they started shuffling
(32:25):
things up, you know that you've got a problem. I have.
I haven't watched an All Star possession of a of
an NBA Basketball All Star games since Magic Johnson hit
the last shot of his basketball career. If you guys
remember that when he came out of retirement just playing
the All Star Game. We've seen some terrible offensive line
play so far in the NFL, But who's the worst?
(32:47):
I'll tell you up coming next. What True Car. You
can find out what other people in your area paid
for the same car you're looking for, new or used.
Visit True Car to enjoy more oftendant car buying experience.
Doug Olive show, Fox Sports Radio. Um, this is interesting
(33:10):
to me. Chris Sheridan tweeted out, why can't the NBA
be more proactive in uh in uh playoff formats? Like listen,
I don't think people have thought out thoroughly what it
means for playoff formats in the NBA. Like you've heard
that before, right, guys, where you're like, well, the West
(33:31):
is better and yet all of a sudden, the West
teams beat up on one another as opposed to the East,
and it's a free run for the Calves and now
the Celtics are the Wizards and Raptors and those are
the four best teams or whatever, So we should change
the playoff formats and hey, top six team get team
gets in? Right, that sounds good. Here's the problem. Now,
here's the problem. Um, if uh, let's say the Portland Showblazers. Okay,
(34:01):
if the Portland Trailblazers match up with the Golden State Warriors,
the time zones match all of the time, or the
people who are going to watch, and even though even
if the Portland Trailblazers aren't or the Trailblazers play the Clippers, right,
those are not two big TV draws nationally, but within
their own regions, especially within Portland, it'll be a great draw.
(34:23):
If Portland has to go and play Miami in the
first round of the playoffs, that's a disaster for TV. Like,
stop and actually think about what you're saying. It's a
disaster for TV. It has to be on four in
the afternoon. You know, you have an eight o'clock startime.
It's five in the afternoon. Nobody watches that in Portland, Oregon.
(34:47):
They just don't. So it works this way because really,
really smart people who understand the number. This is kind
of what we talked about with the Yankees. I've heard
from numerous anti Yankee fans like, oh, gott lab you
are so wrong. I'm rooting for the Yankees to lose.
(35:11):
You might say that, but it's actually not true. It's
like when people say I love the Cinderella's in college basketball.
Really really, why would that be right? Explain to me
(35:33):
why would it be that you like, oh, because you
think more people watch and cheer for the Cinderella's. There
is not a number that supports it. None, zero, zilp
zilch zip, not a if Duke's there, you watch Carolina's there,
you watch, Kentucky's there, you watch, and George Mason's there
you don't watch. I don't make this stuff up. I
(35:56):
just can't. And the same is true with Ajor League Baseball.
You may say I want the Yankees to lose, but
if the Yankees lose in the Minnesota Twins are in
the in the playoffs, if they slide in and play
the Houston Astros, well, then guess what. Nobody watches the
Astros against the Twins. Astros Yankees you watched to three times,
(36:19):
four times as many people. I mean a Twins Diamonbacks
World Series, like yeah, underdog baby, nobody wants it. And
the same is actually true in terms of time zones
with NBA Playoff Basketball, like, oh, the one seeds from
(36:40):
the East, it should be the two teams to the
two top records. Well, that wouldn't have been the Calves, right,
The Calves would have been the same same side of
the bracket as the Golden State Warriors. Let's get to
a game. This is game time. Side Doug gott leave,
(37:01):
show what he got for me, Steven, all right, we
have a variety of games in the bag. Of course,
Let's see John Romos. What's today? Whose line is it? Anyway?
We're gonna be talking about offensive lines in the NFL.
I thought this was clever one week, but we're really
doing this week to actually some very heavy lifting from
producer Ryan went into this game to I must give
(37:22):
him credit, So I gonna act like I'm into this.
That's right. You're the host of the Doug Gottleiave Show. Yes.
Question one, whose line gave up the most sacks and
yards lost in Week four? Talking yards lost due to sex?
Was it? For example? No? It was, well, Cardinals got
(37:45):
Carson Palmer. I forgot. I forgot that was that was
Thursday night. I like totally forgot that game existed. Technically,
the answer is the Lions because their six secks they
gave up had even more yards lost. Fifty five. Question
to whose line currently has the least amount of it
experience in the entire NFL. We're talking about combined starts
of starting lines in the NFL. Is it Giants, Cardinals, Ravens, Seahawks, Colts, Uh,
(38:12):
let's go Colts. Personal foul targeting number eight. That was
a foul Colts twenty seven. So that was a good pick.
But thirty second and at the bottom the Baltimore Ravens,
a mere one seven combined starts. With the five guys,
they have the third fewest yards gained, third fewest in
(38:34):
yards gain. The ugly game in London, Uh the well
they and they were just as ugly against Pittsburgh Steelers.
And I believe um, they have the second fewest yards
per game. Um. So look, look their offense is just
terrible and obviously the youth in the offensive line is
a big reason why. Time for one more question three.
(38:54):
Whose line leads the league in false start penalties so
far this NFL season? Is it? For example, Seahawks Colts
in Miami? It is the Colts. Miami's only scored twenty
five points so this so far this year. Yeah, I
thought everything is going to be different now that they
have the reunion with Jay Cutler and that coach. Maybe not,
(39:16):
by the way, nine, this is game time on the
Duck God leaves show. Now. In fairness to Miami, they've
only played three games, so one of the reasons they
scored fewer points. But they should have lost the charge
charge with the better team, had a field goal to
win it, lost it, but and they trailed the charge
the entire game. They got the Titans, Uh with EJ
(39:37):
manual No, no, yeah, Titans with no EJ. Manuals with
the Ravens. Sorry, the Titans were gonna sign Brandon Weeden
and Matt Castle. Now Matt Castle will be their quarterback.
So no, no time like the president for the Dolphins,
who have not played a home game, to come back home.
Jake Cutler get a start. Then they go to Lanteglo
Falcons and they get the Jets. So they got a
chance to win two of their next three. I don't
(39:57):
think they're beating the Falcons in Atlanta, uh, because Julio
Jones will will be healthy by the time they eventually play.
Everyone is talking about two teams that should tank for
Sam Donald, right Cleveland and the Jets. One team is
tanking without trying, and they too should be in it.
(40:18):
For Sam Donald, the answer is just staring you right
there in the face. The answer to all of this
team's problems are in the red Headed Wonder for USC.
We'll talk about that next in the Doug Gotlip Show,
Fox Sports Radio. Boom, What Up America, Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio. Mmm mmmmmmmm, I'm going to tear into
(40:43):
the back side of the USA Today writer. But I've
never heard of before. But I just crushed because she
wrote a piece of junk piece. Anyway, We'll get to
that momentarily before I get to this. This I find interesting.
Do you see these numbers on just how bad the
ratings are of the charge in LA. It's it's really weird.
It's really weird. Uh. By the way, the NFL Today
(41:06):
came out and said something that I believe I said
going back a week ago. Music helped me out. If
I'm wrong, UM help me if I'm wrong. I believe
when the story came out like a week ago, that
there there was some talk of the Chargers moving back
to San Diego. I was the first and made it
(41:27):
a point to tweet it, say it multiple times. Anyone
who says that the Chargers are thinking about moving to
San Diego has no idea zero There is zero point
zero percent chance they go back to San Diego. Yeah, yeah,
that's actually correct. You didn't even say, no, that's probably
(41:47):
not gonna happen, or I'm not really sure they would
do that. You pretty much said there is a zero
percent chance that that would ever happen. Zero percent chance,
zero percent. You Um anyway, So the NFL today came
out and said there is zero discussion about the Chargers
(42:08):
moving back to San Diego. That's that. It doesn't mean
that this has been in a resounding success. Remember, other
teams have moved to other places for far different reasons.
It's like people in Nashville like, oh, well, we got them.
Remember they played in Memphis. We got them, and we've
been sold out and we Hey, Nashville, you didn't have anything.
(42:32):
You know, you went from Vandy football and Predator hockey
to the National Football League. And by the way, the
Titans were good when they got there. Um pick another team.
When the Ravens moved, uh moved to Baltimore from Cleveland.
Remember they were the Cleveland Browns. They moved to Baltimore.
(42:54):
The Ravens had previously lost a team and they were
they didn't They were one in for a football team,
completely different city, completely different desire, and they were essentially
getting back a football team that they had previously lost.
You're bringing in a rival team from a small market
(43:17):
and you had already given a team to the city
the week before. But the NFL's ratings in Los Angeles
for the Chargers, we're actually the worst of of any
games on TV. So not only they haven't trouble putting
people in the stadium, they have trouble getting people to
actually watch the games. And some of this comes from
(43:42):
the fact that the Chargers were the enemy, some of
it comes from the fact that the Chargers have bad
pr because of how everything has been handled, and something
because of the fact that they're owing four in the season.
But it's also important to mention that while the Chargers
are owing for help is potentially just around the corner.
(44:05):
This year in college football, at least this year in
the NFL Draft is about two maybe three quarterbacks right
looks say, Kwan Barkley will be a top pick, but
outside of that, you've got Sam Donald and Josh Rosen.
Both of them are quarterback college quarterbacks in Los Angeles
who will probably go one two in the draft. And
(44:28):
with Philip Rivers fading, Philip Rivers was never all that
into moving to Los Angeles from San Diego, still hasn't
moved from Saneo. Does the drive up every day? Why
isn't there the discussion about Sam Donald Maybe to a
(44:49):
lesser extent, Josh Rosen being the quarterback of the l
A Chargers right like it gives you. It checks so
many of the boxes. And think about it. The Rams
did this with Jared Goff. They traded up and went
and got Jared Goff and it took a year, and
you know what, now they're exciting. By the way, the
(45:10):
Rams haven't drawn flies the last I don't know, eight games,
five games last year, a couple of games this year.
They're not drawing well. They will now, do you know why?
Because they're good and they're watchable. It's a weird thing
somehow in l A you get criticized for actually kind
of being smart. L A is not a bad sports market.
(45:33):
It's a phenomenal sports market. The Dodgers draw four million
every year. The Angels draw three million every year. There
are not one, but two professional soccer teams. They draw
very well. The Kings have done well, the Ducks have
done well. And while USC and u c l A
USC draws well because they're USC, especially when they're winning.
(45:58):
Uhl A, I guess does poorly. But for a for
a a university that doesn't have it on camp fatility
plays an hour from their campus has never been a
traditional power, putting sixty to seventy people in a hundred thousand,
ninety thousand seats stadium in bed Oh. Yeah, by the way,
(46:20):
we got other stuff to do, and lots of people
still grew up other places. You can still go to
the beach, you can still go to the mountains, you
can still go to the river every weekend day. And
so to me, um, I look at it as it
(46:41):
The risks are greater, but the reward is far greater.
The Chargers are worried about three years from now, not
about this year. They want to be competitive, they want
to win, and they need to be better than to
find a way to win these games. They should have
beaten the Broncos, should have beaten the Dolphins. Probably should
have beaten the Eagles as well. Maybe not. The chiefs
of the defense did a great job against the Chiefs.
(47:06):
But the issue becomes this, if you need excitement in
three years, what's more exciting than Sam Donald? And in
the meantime, if Sam Donald was to play in Carson,
that's like thirty minutes from where he grew up in
Saint Commenting, you draw in USC fans, you draw in
football fans. Who wants something young, something exciting, and you
(47:30):
find the either immediate successor or air apparent. To Philip Rivers,
it checks so many of the boxes. It brings excitement
and interest, and it gets you ready for the real
battle for l A, which is not going to be
one in the short terms route one in the long term.
How much fun would that be to watch Donald on
(47:50):
one team golf on the other. Something to think about.
Everybody thinks about the Jets and the Browns. Maybe the
Jets and the Browns do end up finishing one two,
as the Charges are gonna win some games and the
Jets are gonna start losing more games. But remember the
Rams did not have the number one pick. They traded
(48:12):
up to acquire it. Why they knew they needed a
quarterback in l A in order to get attention to
play the style they wanted to play. Yes, right, If
the Browns end up with the number one pick again
and there is a quarterback available, do you think that
they are going to be willing to trade that because
they know someone else is gonna want to get like
(48:33):
a Donald or a Rosen, or because they have Kaiser.
I guess I think it depends on how Kaiser plays.
Kaiser develops, you know, and it also depends, you know,
like Hugh Jackson, did Hugh Jackson select Kaiser? Does he
like Kaiser above other guys? Because then you're gonna tell
Hugh Jackson, all right, you invest in an entire year
(48:54):
on Kaiser. Now you're gonna have to invest on another guy.
There's a there's a lot more to it, um, I think,
asked me in twelve weeks, I'll tell you. I mean, like,
Kaiser hasn't really been given a chance. He's behind a
terrible offensive line. He was hit thirty one times going
to last weekend. I don't know how many times he's hit,
but a lot by the by the since then, since
(49:16):
THENT Bengals. But I think that that's exactly why it's tough.
I mean, granted, like this is way far in advance,
like you said, so who knows if if Kaiser goes
out there and he starts throwing five picks a game
and all of a sudden, Donald and Rosen looked like
the next John Elway, then sure it's going to be
an easy decision. But to your point with what you said,
I think it's really hard to be like, look, we
(49:37):
just drafted to Shaun Kaiser. The year before you were
playing with like Cody Kessler, and now let's give you
another rookie quarterback. Like you can't keep giving at some
point you gotta go like, hey, we got a guy,
and let's fill out the roster around him, exactly. And
and that's frankly what they did this year's They passed
on quarterbacks and tried to start to fill out their roster.
And they'd be smart to do it again next year. Um,
(50:01):
but let's let's see, I don't know if they don't
win this weekend, I don't know where where the wind
comes from. That's a hard one. I think that's that's
again that's tough to project though, because like last season,
at least me personally, I don't know about you. At
the time, did you think that they were going to
win that game against the Chargers? Yes, so last year
(50:22):
it looked like they weren't going to get a win.
But then I mean, like, look, it's it's a lot
like you play the Raiders, You're like, oh man, we're
gonna lose. Raiders are awesome, all right, Well what do
you play the Raiders and n J Mandels the quarterback?
Right or right? Now you're playing the Texans in two weeks.
If you're the Browns and DeShawn Watson looks really really good,
really good, But Deshaun Watson also runs around a lot.
(50:45):
What if he gets hurt and you played Tom Savage
where they couldn't move the ball at all? Or right now,
the Titans, they don't have Marcus Mariota. You're gonna have
Matt Castle right in three weeks, they play the Titans
at home, it's either Matt Castle or Brandon Weeden quarterback
going against the Browns. You feel a lot better about
yourself if it's one of those guys as opposed to Mariota.
(51:05):
They play the Vikings, who don't have Dalvin Cook for
the year right now, don't have Sam Bradford. We don't
know who they're gonna have at quarterback. So they have
three of their next four at home the Texans. Obviously,
their defense a pere defense, still appears to be good,
so I'd agree with you, but remember the Browns might
(51:28):
not be healthy by the time they get to that
point either. Mike Leach joins the show up coming next,
I'll ask him about their win over USC and why
Luke Falk their quarterback isn't getting any Heisman trophy. Love,
I'll be interested to hear his answer, he joins us.
Next in the Doug Gottli Show at Farmers, we know
a thing or two because we've seen a thing or
(51:50):
two like how to helps, so you can make sure
you're ready for some of life's unexpected hazards. Stay ahead
of the game with tips from a knowledgeable pro. At
Farmers dot Com. Are after their big win over USC
last Friday night, Mike Leach, Cougar's head coach, said, it
was what do you say? It was like woodstock, only
people have their clothes on. It's great. Washington State still
(52:13):
on the feeder rank eleventh in the country, and their
head coach, Mike leachs joins us here on the Doug
got Leave Show, Coach, how are you. I'm doing good. Yeah,
just trying to get ready to tee it up for
another one. We game planned until late last night and
uh looking forward to practice and meetings today. All right,
So you got Oregon this week Organs FOURD one and
(52:35):
I saw your press conference yesterday. You said, hey, they're
just as good as the team we played last week.
Is that is? Is that a vote? Of confidence for
Oregon or a shot at SC. No. I think both
are extremely good. I mean, you know, if you look
at kind of the recruits they've gotten over the last
four years and things like that. Um, you know, both
(52:56):
are extremely good teams and very talented teams. Uh. You
know Oregon is uh characteristically really fast. Uh yeah, I
guess what makes USC so scary when you play them,
as they're not just fast, but they're big fast, you know.
I mean USC is kind of kind of thick fast.
(53:18):
I mean they're not just uh you know, little guys, Uh,
you know, little birsty guys. They're they're thick fast. But
now Oregon's got real good speed and got one of
the best running backs in the conference. And so you
were up there at Austen and uh it should be
(53:40):
a great environment, great game, but you know that that's
a tough team. You know. It's interesting, Um, you pointed
out at halftime of the SC game that you thought
you should have had more points, and it's like, as
good as your team was because Luke Folk was in
the second half, there were times ruly in the game
in which he miss throws that he normally makes. Was
it did you have to settle him down. What was
what you say to your team at the half? I
(54:02):
thought we had to settle the receivers down more than anything.
We dropped seven balls, and um, we dropped seven balls.
But the one thing is is, you know, kind of
a everybody's very anxious, and you know, it was a
big build up for the game, and I thought that
our guys did a pretty good job of of sticking
(54:26):
in there. I thought Luke was real steady. And then
as uh, the rest of our guys settled down, I
thought we got better and better as a team. And
then I also thought that our offensive line played pretty well.
And then, um, really all three sides of the ball
for us, I thought, you know, we played extremely hard,
(54:47):
sloppy at times, and then the first half the ball
really didn't roll our direction very well either. I mean,
we had a freakish chip ball, but you know, the
upon like the two yard line or something, we end
up holding into a field goal. But you know, the
first half, the ball didn't really roll our direction. Second half,
(55:10):
you know, I thought it was, uh, we're a little
more fortunate that way, and then uh, I'm getting there
and it was pounded back and forth. I thought we
moved the ball good the whole day, had the ball
almost thirty five minutes. So um, and then we won,
and of course everybody was excited. You know. It's it's
(55:31):
interesting because there's some uncharacteristic or at least traditionally in
your career. Some of the some of the things that
you guys have been able to do this season and
specifically against USC are not characteristic of what your teams
and your offense had done the past. And and tell
me if I'm wrong, but like, look, you ran the
ball effectively, especially when you needed to, something that you
haven't always wanted to or tried to do. You know,
(55:54):
Morrow had not just ninety one yards it on six carries,
and then Williams had had thirty or four I thought
important yards. Um. Your defense, as you pointed out, you've
got some huge stops, like when you got to stop
at the two yard line, when you got stops late
and uh and and then um, you know, I just
I felt like you were able to really pressure the
passer consistently, and like these are things that in the
(56:18):
past your teams hadn't been able to do. Is it
this team? Is it you evolving as a coach? Why
why some of the things that people would classify as
not Mike leached team things have you guys been able
to do? I think it was a kind of I
think it's a combination. I think for one, um, defensively,
(56:39):
we uh, you know, we well as a team both
sides of the bold. We're a young team. We're a
real young team. Last year played a bunch of guys
that were freshmen, and so now they're sophomores, but at
least their experience sophomores, and we're still a pretty young team.
As a team were predominantly sophomores and juniors, and so
(57:02):
I think that's paying some dividends this year's as guys
know their role and embrace the off season. Uh. As
far as the back said, people have that all screwed up.
I mean, last year we are backs were the most
productive backs in the pack twelve if you had up
their yards, whether on the ground or in the air,
(57:23):
our has had the most over the entire conference, which, um,
if we don't leave the conference, we're close a lot. Um.
You know, of course we'll have some receiving yards and
other teams may not have very many. But those yards
have a funny way of spending exactly the same, you know,
and then um, of course, uh, you know, the last
(57:45):
two years, we've had pretty good years around here. So
what are you doing? What are you currently doing at
this very mom Are you bushing your teeth? Now? I was,
I did wash my hands. I thought I'd slipped that
into you and your listeners. I mean, it's uh, it's
a morning here getting ready to go to the meetings,
and I wanted to share that with what's you and
(58:07):
the good listeners in Los Angeles? And uh, I've got
coffee going and just trying to, you know, make my
tail a little bushire here as I get ready to
go in there and see that for practice and get
another good week going. How do you take your coffee?
Just black? Any special something to obstruct the harsh, bitter take?
(58:33):
Are you? Now? Are you like a Folger's guide? Do
you have a specific kind of like I know how
head coaches are, Like, I want how I want it,
and that's how I want. Is there a specific kind
of coffee that you like? Not really just whatever is
laying there? And then as the day goes on, then
I become kind of a green tea guy. But the
thing is this the the part that's disturbing is um,
(58:55):
you knows, you as your mind kind of speeds up,
you know, you know it's it's so like almost kind
of a chain a chain green tea habit developed, you
know where where you might have a cup sitting there
with you know, half full of tea tea bag there,
and then you're up getting another one. You know what
(59:15):
I mean. Yep, now you start, you start cha Chaine
drinking tea. I read a story where early on when
you were coaching with how Mummy at at iowasn This
is before you guys left and you went to Baldosta
State and then you went to eventually went to Kentucky
and then Kentucky, I know, to Oklahoma, Oklahomay that you
always wanted to coach at at a high school in
(59:39):
key West, right. Well, as I went to Key West,
I did, Um, I guess that started. Let me think
here probably an eighty nine or ninety when I first
went down to Qus, I first wanted to go there.
Then once I went there, I thought, wouldn't have to
be great to coach down here. Yeah, that's I mean
(01:00:03):
about things when all that happened in the job opened
at Key West High and you applied for him and
didn't get it. No, I didn't get it. It was
a fellow from and I don't know his name. It
was a fellow from New Hampshire. Sounded like he was
going to retire down there and then uh, in in
(01:00:27):
Key West. One thing, because it's hard to make a living.
Um in Key West. I mean everybody has splits time.
It's like a cab driver or a bartender or something
to make ends meet. Anyway, he was already heading down
there to begin with, so um, it might have appealed
to him that that he was already going to be there.
(01:00:52):
And then that was towards the tail end of when
I would interview for jobs and I'd say, well, you
know I did this, I get that, I studied this,
and you know, I just want to know how I
did on the interview so I can improve, you know,
And the guy would say, get older, you know, And
so then I went off and I got older. You
(01:01:15):
successfully accomplished. I think now you would get that job
if you if you so, if you so apply, if
you decide to retire down there. Um. It was pointed
out numerous times. You guys haven't left the police yet
for a game. Obviously that changes this weekend. Five of
your last seven are on the road. Um, and so
I guess the question becomes, you thought you had You
(01:01:37):
said you were not surprised by beating sc like you
thought you had a good team that come into your
place and you beat him. It didn't, It didn't surprise,
didn't raise your blood temperature at all. Um, what do
you still have to learn about your team? As you
guys travel for your last seven games, five of which
on the road. You know, we gets got it. I
I always see the season and increments of weeks, and
(01:01:59):
you've got to take a step and improve a notch
each week is how I always see it. And um,
you know we have to do that. I mean, we
have to be a better team today than we were
last Friday. I think that's an important part of it.
And then, uh, you know, heck, they did a freaky
(01:02:20):
study and and we are one of those teams, but
we weren't the only one. They did this weird study
last year where the road team won most of the
teams in our conference. And it's just it's the strangest thing,
but it seems like road teams fare better in this
conference and home teams on a lot of occasions and
where they actually won more or something like that. So
(01:02:43):
you know, we're going to take that overwhelming advantage and
going to odds and stadium and do the best we can't.
Luke has sixteen touchdowns, two interceptions, You're already thrown for
seventeen d yards you go back in the I mean like, look,
he's the picture of consistency. And and yet when you
when you hear of the discussions about Heisman trophies, when
you hear discussions about NFL quarterbacks, you don't hear his
(01:03:06):
name mentioned. No one knows more about the quarterback position,
uh than you do. What's your assessment of Luke Falk,
especially as you you saw Sam Donald come into your
building last week. Well, I think Luke's an extremely good player,
I think, you know, I think it's uh well documented.
He's won more games in the back twelves than any
active quarterback. I think, Uh, I think he will go
(01:03:31):
to the NFL. And I think that a lot of
times it's just media base, you know, I mean, UM
schools and bigger media bases have more media coverage around him,
and I think that, uh, you know, of course UH names,
that those schools will get elevated because they want to
have something exciting to cover down there, and and but
(01:03:53):
that you know Luke's numbers, Luke's results, all that Luke
folks the best quarterback in the conference, and I you know,
and it's pretty much indisputable anyway. You measure it better
than Rosen, better than breakout is numbers, breakout loops. And
then we're not talking by a very close margin either.
(01:04:16):
I think what I don't think it comes down as much.
Some of it is market size or school name, but
I think a lot of it is I think respect
for the fact that you've had so many quarterbacks who
have put up numbers. Like you know, you go back
to tech and you go back to when you're at
OU Mike, you go back to to UH, to to
couch when you're at Kentucky, like the the one thing
you can always count on is your quarterback will have
(01:04:37):
ridiculous numbers. How do you combat that? No, I don't know.
Just good coaching and clean living, you know, coffee in
the morning, green tea in the afternoon, and wash your
hands as often as possible is not about right. Yeah,
do you have good hygiene two as I as I
say that I probably haven't showered in two days, and
(01:05:00):
getting ready to walk to school, you know, I got
I have a walk. I have a walker. You could
throw that in how long three and a half miles,
but it's hilly, and then I can do all my
phone calls and things. And actually, um, um, you're fortunate
because this is kind of on the front end. There
is about it. There is a hill about a half
(01:05:21):
a mile long, and it's pretty steep. As I'm coming
in the back side of campus. It's not unusual, um
for me to be huffing and puffing on some of
these interviews and uh, but we try to kind of
make it, you know, genuine rustic all those things. So
um yeah, going up the back side of that hill
(01:05:43):
doing an interview, I try to let the interviewer do
most of the talking so I can catch my breath. Well, listen,
We'll allow you to get get your walk, get your day,
get your meetings. Congratulations on the wind, save travels to Eugene.
Hopefully you come back to Pullman with with the W.
Appreciate you join us on Fox Sports Radio. Well, thanks
so much. It's always uh, it's always great to talk
(01:06:04):
to you, and um Man good to hear from me,
and tell everybody to buy my book Swing your sword
in the book I wrote on Geronimo. Make sure I
picked that one up at Amazon. Thanks so much. Coach
Mike Leach joining us on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Let's
get to Steve to say you find out what else
is going on the world of sports. All right, we'll
start with NFL. The Titans signed quarterback Brandon Wheedon starter
Marcus Mariota suffered a hamstring injury on Sunday. Tennessee also
(01:06:26):
has Matt Castle. Carolina signed safety Jaris Bird, a former
pro bowler in Buffalo. The Panthers Kirk Coleman sprain a
m c L last week, and the Seahawks say rookie
running back Chris Carson had successful ankle surgery today. He's
expected to be out for the year. The NBA is
changing its All Star Game format for this season, no
more East versus West instead for the game in February
(01:06:47):
in l A. Two captain's will draft all stars onto
their rosters. Russell Westbrook will miss Oklahoma City's preseason opener
tonight do to minor knee injuries. The Mets stand War
then will not be back his pitching coach next year.
Long time trainer Ray Ramirez is also out. The Cardinals
Derek Liloquist will not be back as pitching coach in St. Louis,
The Tigers will interview Marlin's third base coach Freddy Gonzalez
(01:07:09):
this week for their managerial opening. According to The Athletic,
Detroit has already interviewed its own base coaches and will
likely talk to its hitting coach Lloyd McClendon as well.
The a L Wild Card game is tonight, the Yankees
hosting the Twins at eight pm Eastern Time, a matchup
of two of the five best d r as in
the American League this year. Urban Santana for Minnesota. He
went sixteen and eight against the Yankees, Luis Savarino, who
(01:07:32):
went fourteen and six, and twin slugger Miguel soon No
not active tonight. He had missed six weeks until recently
due to injury. Tonight's winner goes to Cleveland to start
a bestI five division series on Thursday. Minnesota for the
record is one and eight at Yankee Stadium since and
the Twins were eliminated by the Yankees in the playoffs
four times last decade. In fact, since two thousand two,
(01:07:53):
Minnesota is just fourteen and forty five in the Bronx
back to you, fourteen forty five, So you're saying there's
a chance, there's chance. They're saying that that that That
was kind of my point. I mean they had, Uh,
they had some really good teams. People forget, like Minnesota
had some really good teams that would they were the
opposite of the Angels. The Angels always played well against
the Yankees in the playoffs and poorly against the Red
(01:08:14):
Sox in the playoffs. The Twins could never get past
the Yankees. Yamn Yankees. Yeah, these were Twins teams that
were winning ninety games every year, no question. Um, it's
it's funny you bring that up. Like look at the
go back and look through the Baseball Reference dot. You
know you have to do Baseball Reference, Baseball Dance Reference.
I think it is a really good Like who does
(01:08:34):
that's a lot of work though there sure seems like
a lot of work. And yes, absolutely are we benefit.
Uh it is our But if I don't know how
people did our job before before before that, Huh, you
knew less, you knew less or you guessed more. I
guess I would take more research. There just isn't enough
time to get all the information then that we now have. Yeah,
(01:08:58):
I mean, but I just it's really remarkable to me
on how many times the Twins had good teams and
yet they could never uh, they couldn't get past the
they couldn't get past the Yankees. And now they have
all they have to do is win one game, and
so baseball could it could be the opposite of the
intended effect, right, Like the whole idea of this was
(01:09:19):
to get you know, seriously, teams like the Yankees in
the playoffs as often as possible, and because it's better
for baseball for one night. Remember a couple of years
ago they had one night at Yankee Stadium and lost
to Dallas KIKEL of Houston. The Yankees haven't won a
postseason game in five years. Well, they'll be back in
and everybody be watching tonight. And two people who say
they don't watch the numbers or they don't like the Yankees,
(01:09:43):
maybe you watch things that you don't like. Um, I
saw this story, and I know Steve seger Uh has
has discussed it a little bit. LaVar Ball says he's
gonna pull LaMelo Ball from high school. Now, LaMelo Ball
goes to a high school called the Chino Hills. Chino
Hills is in the Inland Empire. Um, it smells a
(01:10:05):
cow poop there there. It is. It just is lots
of horses, lots of cattle. Um. Inland Empire is a
place in which, um, it's less expensive to live and
you can get to Los Angeles, you can get to
Orange County, you can get to Las Vegas far easier.
But it's hotter, dustier, and sometimes a little bit smellier.
(01:10:26):
Good people there. I just I'm not pointing out anything
that's it's developed. It it kind of blew up as
a development, I don't know, twenty years ago. And then
of course when the recession was bad, that part of
it got just crushed because the housing was so over valued.
People who made thirty dollars a year, we're buying couple
hundred thousand dollar homes and unable to make their payments.
(01:10:48):
So what happened was, uh, Dennis Lattimore took over. Now
a lot of more played in college. He's coach college
basketball before played the Arizona plate Notre Dame, and you
replace Stephen Gilling, who, of course, um LaVar Ball chased
out of town. Dennis Lattimore wanted to play a more
(01:11:08):
traditional style as opposed to the way Chino Hills played before,
which is press and just shoot crazy, three point shots crazy,
And so LaVar Ball says, uh, it's a new coach,
and I don't like him one bit. LaMelo's on track
for U C l A. But he doesn't have to
be dealing with those nutleheads. I'm not letting them mess
with his head anymore. You can put that on the
(01:11:30):
principal and the coach over there. The coach has his
own frame of mind you want on how he wants
to play and who he picks in his team. Okay,
y'all got this going. Let's see you do it without
my tutelage, without me training those players at my house.
It seems like anybody who's training over there, that coach
doesn't want him with the team. Look, I'll point out,
my dad nearly pointed pulled me from my high school,
(01:11:51):
and I a really good high school coach got named
Andy Ground, who's now the head coach at um Stutleback
Community College. But wildly successful high school and junior college
coaching like, look, this happens, alright, We're like, I'll pull him,
I'll send you a prep school. We'll we'll we'll move,
we'll go to a different district, etcetera, etcetera. I actually
(01:12:12):
think the best thing for LaMelo would be to play
for somebody else, to play for a different style, to
understand that at some point you've got to play real basketball.
I wildly disagree this, especially because though it worked for Alonzo,
it did. Alonzo Ball was an All American, won a
state championship, went to u c l A, completely turned
(01:12:34):
around u c l A, was the number two pick
of the draft, and now he gets to play for
the Lakers. Like those are winds. But LaVar was different then.
He wasn't this bigger than life character making bull bombastic
statements that we tweeted about or talked about or people
wrote about. And LaMelo is different. You can raise kids
(01:12:56):
exactly the same in the same home. Anybody has kids,
know this, Ramo says kids, he knows this. You can
raise kids the exact same way and they turn out
differently or because they're different. LaMelo Ball is different than
a Lonzo Ball. He is selfish as a Lonzo is
unselfish the Lakers. I touched the Lakers coaches last night
before their exhibition game against the Nuggets. They're like, look,
(01:13:19):
we gotta tell Alonzo to look to score more, to
be more selfish, or look to make plays more. Instead,
he's just give He just getting the rid of the
ball too quickly. And then I saw this from Nancy Armor,
who I don't know Nancy, she may be a super
talented writer. This is a bad piece. This is a
(01:13:39):
bad take, This is a hot take. Congratulations, LaVar Ball,
You've finally done the impossible, not create the world's greatest
basketball player. He's still out on that for a while,
but early indications are not promising. So now she's taking
shots at Alonzo Ball, who's played in one in a
quarter in a quarter exhibition games. Not that I think
(01:14:03):
the Alonso is gonna be the greatest player ever, but
one in a quarter. Uh? Nor did you create the
model athletic experience or dynasty that will be remembered for
years to come. Not anything positive. Now, what what Ball
has done is finally supplant Marvin Renovich as the worst
parent ever A title Murdovich had a lot grip on
for some thirty years. Now, part of this is I'm
(01:14:25):
friends with Marvin Merovich. I'm friends with Todd Renovich. And
though Nancy Armor may put all of the post career
disaster that is Todd Murdovich on Marvin Krovitch. Tom Mroovich
was the first round draft pick of the l A Raiders,
(01:14:46):
starting quarterback as a rookie start at USC All America.
Now he didn't have a great life. I haven't. He
hasn't had a great life in terms of being balanced,
staying out of trouble when he got involved in drugs.
But laying all of the drug problems on the foot
of parents is well taken away any sort of accountability
(01:15:08):
from the kid. Additionally, so I don't think Marvin Rivage
is even the worst parent ever, and I definitely don't
think of our ball is. I mean, you know, look,
I don't agree with a lot of stuff la Ore does.
I won't do it for my kid. I'll criticize it,
but I also won't say he's the worst parent ever.
(01:15:31):
Bad piece after a bad decision by LaVar Ball, should
the Tennessee Titans have signed Colin Kaepernick instead? Of signing
Brandon Weeden. We'll discuss next what True Car you can
find out what other people in your area paid for
the same car you're looking for, new or used. Visit
True Car to enjoy more confident car buying experience. Doug
(01:15:53):
Ott Leave Show Fox Sports Radio every day. At this time,
we'd like to play for you a portion of a
show on earlier today. Something that was said that UH
perked up our attention, perked up our ears, if you will,
might have come from ol kicked the coverage. It's Clay
Travis's show, Calling Cowherd Show, Dan Patrick Show, which is
live in l A UH this week, or might have
(01:16:14):
come from Undisputed TV show on Fox Switch one, or
even First Things First we call it and now Chris
Carter is a Hall of Famer. He's part of First
Things First. He and Nick Wright and General Wolfe all
part of that cast which you can see six thirty two,
nine thirty in the morning, East Coast time. And Chris
got into discussion about UH the Tennessee Titans signing a
(01:16:39):
backup quarterback potential starting quarterback with Marcus Mariota injured. Take
a listen. He should be a part of the conversation. Now,
I don't know what the offensive coordinator wants to do.
I don't know how the owner stands. But I've seen
these boards and guys that are on the street. I
know how they do this. They have a list of them.
As soon as the guy gets hurt, they go to
the top of the list, pluck that guy, call him,
(01:17:02):
get him into that town, and have him go through
a workout. How quickly does that happen? Should that be?
It happens every Monday Tuesday. Every Monday and Tuesday, every
team in the league has guys in for workouts. And
if the if the team is on the plane, the
general managers in the front office are calling people on
Sunday night, making flights for guys to come in, fly
in the next day and to work out. And this
(01:17:24):
is not the process that they're going through with Colin Kaepernick.
I can't say he should be in Tennessee. He should
be in the NFL, he should be someone should be
calling him. This is my belief that they've removed him
off of most of the boards. So now they're normal
process for picking players. They've gone out of their way
to keep Colin from playing. Um. I kind of tend
(01:17:46):
to agree there. I don't know if you call being
black balls. I don't know what the individual reasons were.
I do know this Tennessee Titans brought in or discussed
four or five different quarterbacks. They decided that brand Whedon,
who full disclosure is a friend of mine, was there
Guy Weed, and of course started and finally won a
game as it started with the Houston Texans last year.
(01:18:08):
Weed knew previously that was what was the backup with
the Dallas Cowboys where they couldn't win a game, and
he actually played statistically quite well. Weed he was a
first round draft pick and then cut shortly after uh
cut shortly after with the Cleveland Browns. Brandon Weeden is
well traveled. Brandon Weeden's got a huge arm, He's thirty
three years old. He has no personal baggage, not that
(01:18:30):
Kaepernick has a ton of baggage, but um, I think
it's interesting that that with Mariota, who is a quarterback
that can run, and I know Mariota tries to get
out of the I'm not a running quarterback, but he
is a He is a quarterback that can run. To
not look even look the way of Colin Kaepernick when
(01:18:50):
you got four or five names, Matt Barkley one of
the other names that was discussed. It's interesting and I
think it does speak to what Chris Carter saying is like,
you weren't even really considering him, They're just not now.
I think the obvious knee jerk reaction is, well, it's
because of his stance and because of the movement he started,
(01:19:12):
and I'm sure there's some validity to that in some places,
but I also think it's possible um as to what
happened when he went to Seattle. He went to Seattle.
Seattle needed somebody to compete with Trayvon Boykin, and ultimately
Seattle passed, brought in Austin Davis, who beat out Trayvon Boykin,
and they cut Boykin. That sends shock waves to the league.
(01:19:34):
It just does. Um. Baltimore was a place that I'm
sure considered him. John Harbaugh and his old offensive coordinator
is the coordinator there with with that in mind to
not even get so much of a look, and Ray
Rice come Ray ray Lewis came out and said, hey,
we were discussed going to discuss signing him, and then
(01:19:57):
all of a sudden, his girlfriend tweets out a me
team of me and the owner and relates it to
Django unchained like people pay attention to this stuff. So
I don't know if he was if you call it
black bald, but I do know that he wasn't even
considered for a spot that one would think you should
be considered for. Well. It's also interesting, do you see
(01:20:20):
any parallels between the Kaepernick situation and Robert Griffin the
third They play a similar style, They've Colin Kaepernick had
a little bit more success, and he's also not in
the league. It's a great point. It's a great point.
I also think both have There's some unspoken things about
both of them in terms of their ability to lead
(01:20:40):
or to divide a locker room that I think are problematic.
I remember Kaepernick lost his job previously in San Francisco
because he struggled to lead. So there's a lot to it.
But I do think there's some similarities. Are the Chiefs
the best team in the NFL? Are just the best
available team in the NFL. We'll discuss next in the
Doug Gotlips Show, Fox Sports Radio. What Up? Doug Gottlieb Show,
(01:21:05):
Fox Sports Radio, Coming to you from the Beautiful city
of Los Angeles. We're getting ready to watch playoff baseball. Now. Look,
I don't know what if you consider this the playoffs
are playing. This is a playing game to me. But um,
take a look at take a look at um. Uh,
(01:21:29):
let's see here, take a look at what the Minnesota
Twins are up against. Uh this center from my Minnesota
born and bread. Uh is he program director? Right? Is
that what what Scott Shapiro is? Yeah, you might have
heard this from Steve to Seger. The Twins or excuse me,
(01:21:50):
the Yankees since two thousand two are forty five and
fourteen at home against New York Yankees. More team twelve
and two in the playoffs with nine consecutive wins. They
eliminated Minnesota four times. The Yankees swept the step Twins
two weeks ago. Well, it's it's complete and told this
(01:22:14):
is uh bug and windshield, hammer and nail. But I
I'm of the belief, they of the honest belief that
two things. There are two things that Major League Baseball
intended to do artificially when they put another wild card
(01:22:36):
team in right. One thing they intended to do was
lessen the strength of the wild card team moving forward, right,
it's gonna happen with the Ers and Dimebacks. If they win,
they won't have Zach Grinky to be starting Game one
against the Dodgers. It'd be hard to start Zach Grinky
unless you put them on short rest twice in that series.
(01:22:58):
If if they survived the Colorado Rockies, that's and that's
a big if. And so I think that's part of
the intended like, look, we want our division we get home.
You know, well, we gotta play a wild card team
who snuck in. And in the past they could go
with their ace. Now it's not the case anymore. The
(01:23:21):
other thing, I think they wanted to have the Yankees
and Red Sox in the playoffs as often as possible.
It's like the Yank only one team, the Yankees or
the Red Sox can win that division on a yearly basis,
but they can both get in even without winning it,
or if one wins it, the other one can get in.
And this is the kind of perfect sni the the
(01:23:41):
you go back and look at the ratings before the Cubs, okay, BC,
before the Cubs, before the Cubs were in the playoffs
last year, or you can go back to the previous
year with the Cubs. Take out the Cubs, and baseball
ratings are basically, if the Yankees in Red so are
both in it, they peak. If one is in it,
(01:24:03):
they're decent. If neither in it, they're in the basement.
And that's the way it goes. Part of it is,
I think it's sixties. Six percent of all sports TV
viewers are in the Eastern time zone, and two cities
which have national appeal and an incredible intense local audience
(01:24:26):
are the Red Sox and the Yankees. And yet even
though their intentions were probably to get the Yankees and
the Red Sox in the playoffs, think about it that
the Yankees like, oh, they dominate the Twins, they swept
the Twins going back two weeks ago. They are But
because the one game scenario, you run the risk here
of having the Yankees out of the playoffs like that.
(01:24:52):
Fascinated by tonight. I love playoff baseball because there's always
there are things that go, uh, the things that go
what is it not banging the night? What are they
things that go bunk of the night? What is the
what's the expression bump in the night? Sorry? Things that
go bump in the night. There are plays here, like
people forget remember what can see rules won the World
(01:25:15):
Series year before when they went to the World Series,
or what was the year that they wanted the year
they went to the World Series but did not win.
Remember they had the one of the Houston They're playing
the Houston Astros in the playoffs and the Astros just
completely choked. You remember that? Um, So there will be
no Toronto Blue Jay's bat flip Mania. Instead, they'll be
(01:25:38):
Yankees with Aaron Judge, who leads Major League Baseball in
Jersey sales, going against the Minnesota Twins, whose best player is,
though not on the shelf, will not be in the
lineup tonight, So no will not play the night Twins
end up eighty five and seventy seven, and Paul Malldor
(01:26:00):
is there. Twins are one of those teams where you
tell me if I'm wrong here, I would say most
people think Rod Ron garden Hire is still their manager, right,
That's not That's not a crazy statement to make, is it?
Who's their manager? Ron garden Hire? You gotta be Ron
Ron guy. You know you almost feel like rain rain
man Ron Gardener. How many Minnesota Twins can you name?
(01:26:21):
We'll get back to that. I'll challenge the crew in
a second. First, though, I want to point out great
Monday night football game last night. Not good, great, totally watchable,
two above average quarterbacks, too, super well coached teams. Uh.
I do think in kan City is as good an
environment as you're going to see in professional sports. And
the Kancy Chiefs are undefeated, and um, this it's a
(01:26:44):
little bit like when Kentucky wins the national recruiting rankings,
Like winning the Battle of the quarter Pole doesn't really
get you anywhere, but you still tip your cap and say, man,
Kancity Chiefs. Over the last I don't know thirty games,
has they've been a better franchise in the regular season
in the NFL? The answer is probably not. Kareem Hunt
(01:27:08):
appears to be the real deal at running back, Alex
Smith continues to impress and find ways to win games.
And uh, those are two playoff plue playoff caliber teams.
The Skins fresh off of win a dominant win over
the Oakland Raiders. They got a good defense, they're well coached.
Cousins is not great but better than just good. All right,
(01:27:34):
But I said this earlier and I mean it I'm
not trying to disrespect Kansas City. I'm a realist. He
lost Eric, very best safety in football. And while you
have a great home field advantage, you lost the home
last year in the playoffs. Doesn't matter as much as
you think you have a tremendous running back. At some
point we start to figure it out and you think
he'll level He'll level off here and Alex Smith will
(01:27:57):
have to win you a game, and no one thinks
that Alex Smith can do that. I just go back
and look at quarterbacks who have played in the Super Bowl.
Go back and look, and you tell me how many
Alex Spieths are in the Super Bowl. Go for it.
(01:28:18):
Once you do that, you'll start to realize kind of
I know Jake Delone played in the Super Bowl. You
may think Matt Ryan. I don't agree with the Matt
Ryan is Matt Ryan. The Atlanta Falcons had never had
back to back winning seasons before Matt Ryan got there.
And while Jake Delone did start and Rex Grossman did
(01:28:39):
start games in the Super Bowl, the fact is that
one either one and two. That's the exception, not the rule.
Who's the quarterback last? Who are the two quarterbacks last?
Year in the Super Bowl, Matt Ryan the m v
P against Tom Brady. Year before it was what Peyton Manning,
who was a shell of his former self. I'm not
(01:29:01):
gonna argue with that. Alex Smith now is a better
quarterback than Peyton Manning was then, but Peyton Manning was
the quarterback. And Cam Newton who Alex Smith, you could
make the case is much more steady than Newton, but
that year Newton played the level far above that that
Alex Smith was played. You just need This is a
little bit like what's generally happened in college basketball. Usually
(01:29:23):
in college basketball, or to win a national championship, you
gotta have a pro. You gotta have a dude that
can just or two that can just carry you, because
there are times in which your team doesn't have it.
You need one game or two games the n c
A Tourmaman where a pro is just the best player
on the court. He just has more talent than other guys.
And that's by and large been the case. Have there
(01:29:45):
been exceptions. Absolutely college basketball, the talent isn't as now,
it's more about veteran talent than it is about top
end talent. Not arguing there and there's a little bit
of that in the NFL, where with the Kansas City Chiefs,
you have such a good defense, you have such a
good homefield advantage, you're so well coached. If everybody ends
up more banged up than you are Alex Smith does
(01:30:06):
have experience playing deep into the playoffs, you could be fine.
But there's a reason that they drafted a quarterback right
like in there in their reason they went out and
drafted a quarterback. It wasn't just to motivate the quarterback
they have. It's to eventually replace the quarterback there and
(01:30:26):
to that, it just tells me what the kan City
Chiefs truly know in their heart of hearts were good.
We're not really the best. We might be playing the
best now, that's fair, but no one has ever won
a championship at halftime, and the season doesn't end today.
(01:30:47):
And winning the first four games, even against formidable opponents
and playing well and doing so, that doesn't make you
the best team in the NFL. It makes you the
best team for this week. They're the best best available.
The Patriots haven't figured it out in their defensive backfield,
and to this point they haven't traded away Jimmy Garoppolo
(01:31:08):
to get somebody who can pressure the pastor the Pittsburgh
Steelers are not clicking on all cylinders on offense. The
Oakland Raaders have injuries and their best wide receivers had
a bad case of the drops. And the same reason
(01:31:28):
that most people don't believe in the Denver Broncos quarterback
play is the same reason most people don't believe in
the Kansas City Chief's winning a Super Bowl. Mark Layers
joins the show up coming next. How sustainable is the
dominance of the Chiefs. It's a great question. Can anything
be done to save this Patriots defense? Why aren't Why
(01:31:52):

Doug Gotlam show Fox Sports Radio. He played, of course
for the Skins and the Broncos winning three Super Bowls
and now he uh has joined us in Fox Sports.
He had a great job covering the Chargers. Uh loss
hell who they played this past weekend? I can't remember
who staying quent Mark Slayer joins us on Philly called
(01:33:42):
the called the game at at stuff Hub. We'll circle
back around in Philadelphia, because I mean, I thought you
were incredible call in the game. You're like, I'm watching
the game. You're like, look this eleven eleven different, back ahead, look,
let me interrupt you. Except when I was calling the
San Diego Chargers like the moron that I am, Um,
but you know, I mean, that's gonna happen. But I mean,
(01:34:02):
like it happens, it's great, Like I did it today
on Cowhard Show. It just as getsing grained in your head.
But you said, like I remember, You're like, hey, eleven
times they were working on their red zone stuff as
a hunter Henry Hunter Henry, and he came out of
the game, he cames back in the game, and who
do you think they threw the baltipoal Hunter Henry, Like,
I like when people prepare me for what's happening, because
they did their job. He did a great job. Well,
I appreciate that, man. And uh and you know, the
(01:34:24):
the Charges are in trouble. Let me just say that, Um,
they're in trouble, but the Philadelphia Eagles are. They're legit.
So really fun to be involved in the game, really
fun to go be at the site and to be
able to watch these games and call these games, and
to be able to talk to people who are you know,
still executing, to some of the young kids, and it's
(01:34:45):
just a lot of fun. Man, I really enjoyed. Um. Okay,
Philip Rivers. I know he actually played pretty well this
past weekend, Um, but he struggled in weeks before. Um
should should we should we be concerned about the longevity
of his career. Then there's nothing wrong with Philip rivers
skill set. I mean, the guy has never been able
to run. But if you went and saw the practice
(01:35:07):
that I saw on Friday, man, he's got swagger. He
was directed traffic, he was throwing dimes. Armed talent was there,
without question. The problem with the Chargers is they got
a bunch of guys. Um. I just I just look
at them as one of the least dynamic teams I've
studied on film. They don't have a lot of guys
(01:35:28):
that that are breakaway, you know, legitimate threat guys. Um,
you look at Melvin Gordon in first round or like
you tell me what the signature run is, tell me
the signature play that you look at Melvin Gordon goes, wow,
that was great. That really defines him. And I would
defy you to tell me because I don't think you can.
You look at him right now, and he doesn't have power.
(01:35:51):
Uh he's had that microfractory, he had that in April.
He doesn't have quickness, he doesn't have a chility, he
doesn't have side to side and he does that power
and you know, he looks beat up. He looks like
just the guy right now. And I think most of
it is because the injury and the beating um that
that knee has taken. And I've had six microfracture surgeries,
(01:36:13):
you know, And it's different for me because I was
an offensive lineman. They are as tough. It's not harder
to come back from than a c l S. And
I've had a c l S. They're really really difficult.
And the difference is, you know, I played offensive line.
You're a running back. You're not a hobble back. And
right now he's a hobble back. And so I just
(01:36:35):
look at them with a lack of offensive weaponry. Keenan
Allen is a really good player, a really good player,
But at any point does he threaten you, like, oh gosh,
you gotta be careful with him because he'll beat us
over the top. He's he's had too many injuries as well,
right right, and and Antonio Gates can't separate Hunter. Henry
(01:36:55):
is the best player on their team offensively. He is
the most dynamic athlete on their team offensively, and they
struggle to find a way to get him the ball.
And that's It's not a Philip Rivers issue. Trust me,
it is not a Philip Rivers issue. It's a lack
of a lack of explosiveness of your players issue. Everywhere
(01:37:17):
else Doug got them show Fox Sports Radier, that's the
voice of marshalais. What about Carson wentz uh Now you
saw him on tape, then you saw him in person
in a game. Um, how how secure should Eagles fans
be in their future with him a quarterback? Very secure
that you and I have talked about this, We've talked
about it all on there. We've talked about an affair.
(01:37:39):
That dude factor. That dude's got swagger. Man, he's just
got the dude factor. And there is no question in
a day and age where it's all about your diva
wide receivers may think about it. You have a quarterback
camp and you bring everybody up to North Dakota. Come
on up to North Dakota. We'll fish and write some
jet skis, you know, and those guys couldn't wait to go.
(01:38:01):
I mean, you talked to the coaching staff man. They
can't be more effusive in his praise as a football player,
in his preparation, the way he works, the leadership that
he presents um, the way guys respect him, and at
six five to legitimately to he's one of those guys
that just has unbelievable athletic, like sneaky athleticism. I used
(01:38:24):
to talk to guys and I think this is this
is applicable here. I used to talk to guys about
Randy Moss and what was it like to cover Randy Moss?
And they say, you know, it's shocking because on film
he's such a smooth athlete. He doesn't look like he's
giving effort, and when you watch him on film, you're like, oh, yeah,
I can run by I can run with him. I mean,
I'm watching him on film. It's like it's effortless. It's gliding.
(01:38:47):
He looks like he's giving no effort, and you think
it pools you into believing that, yeah, I can run
with him. And then he gets on the field, you're
one on one with him. He runs by you by
four steps in the first six and you're like, oh
my god, I wasn't ready for it. I think Carson
does that as well. His escapability, and not only escapability
to run, but escapability to set things up has set
(01:39:09):
him apart. And then their two bookend offensive tackles in
Lane Johnson and and Peters And I said it on
the broadcast, I swear to you, Jason Peters is from
the University of Narnia. That dude is a he's fourteen
years in the league. That dude moves like he's nineteen.
I mean, it is unreal to watch that guy play.
(01:39:31):
They brought a safety blitz off the edge and this
little tiny safety cornerback type comes screaming off the edge
and he's like a big dance and bear out there
just step for step in this waltz with this little
dude and it was over. It's just it was fun
for me to watch it. All Right, Let's get to
what we saw last night. Mark Slayers joining US three
(01:39:51):
time Super Bowl champion, played with Skins, played with Devor Broncos,
now plays for US at Fox Sports. Since uh was
it October are twenty five? Right? October of two thousand
and fifteen, Kanci Chiefs has been the best team in
the regular season in football, right. I mean they started
that year I think it was one and five and
(01:40:14):
then they end that year eleven and five, last year
twelve and four. Now undefeated, So this is this is
a team that's been good, been building on this for
a while. Are they legitimately the best team in football
right now? It's a it's a good question they I
think I'll say yes. But they have fatal flaws, like
every team in the league has fatal flaws. And when
(01:40:37):
you think about a team that is given up more
sacks than any team in the league in the last
three games, Doug, They've given up thirteen sacks in the
last three games. And here's the amazing thing. In those
three games where they've given up thirteen sacks. Alex Smith
is thrown four touchdowns I believe, or yeah, four touchdowns
(01:41:01):
and ran for a touchdown, so he's he's created five
touchdowns with exactly zero picks. I mean, to be able
to protect the ball when you're under durest and to
be athletic enough to get to the outside and still
make plays like he did in the fourth quarter, that's amazing.
I mean, that's the next level. There's very few guys
that get pressured as much as he's been pressured without
(01:41:21):
turning the football over, and he hasn't turned it over.
And then you look at what they run. I mean,
it is like it's it's like facing when you're a
big school and all of a sudden you have to
face one of these like air Force, these these these
you know, triple option teams, and you've never seen it before,
and you've got to kind of revamp offensively. I mean,
(01:41:44):
what have you ever seen so much jet sweep shovel past,
you know, reverse stuff. I mean, they are they are
so tough to defend because they present so much I
can get so much bologny that you have. They make
your eyes undisciplined and when you have undisciplined eyes, man,
you start chasing ghosts and that's what they do to
(01:42:06):
you as an offense. That's what makes them so incredibly
tough to defend. And then on top of that, come on,
I mean, Tyreek Hill is one of the fastest people
on the planet, and yet he's thick like most of
those fast guys, like the ted Gins of the world.
You can run a reverse and you can run a
nine right, just a go pattern and that's about it.
(01:42:27):
But that guy has the whole route treat to his disposal,
and then he can still do that underneath stuff and
that gadget stuff. Um. Travis Kelsey right now has become
the toughest tight end cover in football. He is He
is the toughest tight end to cover in the National
Football League. Barn his athleticism, his ability is incredible. He's
a big, giant wide receiver. And then you look at
(01:42:49):
Kareem Hunt. That guy's a balling a bowling ball. Butcher
n eyes man, I mean, he's just running through people.
So they have got they have got great talent. And
then Alex it makes up for a multitude of sins
up front with pressures because he doesn't turn the ball over,
so they're legit. There is no question he's got really
good feed as well. And uh and and he sacrifices,
(01:43:11):
he go and dumps it off. I mean, I guess
I noticed though, the hesitation, because what I said was like, look,
Pittsburgh's not playing as well as they are, but they
have they have a better ceiling. I do think there's
a chance to Patriots figure out something defensively. I mean,
you know, maybe a trade Jimmy Garoppolo in order to
get some pass rushing help. Um, I still think it.
(01:43:31):
You know, Atlanta's got Atlanta has when they get there,
Wi Snow and Julio Jones. Uh, they still have some
dynamic defensive players. Like there's other teams around the league.
The Cowboys, uh aren't playing great, but have a lot
of talent. I still think there's some teams around the
league that could be better than the Chiefs. Even if
we would all agree the Chiefs are playing the best
or being as the last undefeated and have played well
(01:43:53):
in the regular season the past, that is that a
fair way to put it? Yeah, I think I don't
think there's I don't think there's in my find any
hesitation with that, because, as I mentioned, every game has
fatal flaws and it just depends on when you catch
them and how you catch them, you know, New England.
The interesting thing about the Patriots in that defense is,
even going back to my days, the thing that made
(01:44:15):
them so hard. They always had really good players. Don't
get me wrong, they're really smart players, and they had
an ability to change from game to game, week to week, uh,
courter to courter, and they'll roll stuff out in the
middle of the game that you've never seen, like, oh,
here we go. We we don't know, Like you're drawing
stuff up in the huddle. You're saying what are they?
(01:44:36):
And what are they? And who do you like? Who
are the bigs, who are the who are the smallest?
You know, how do we protect this? Who? Who? Who's
the mic? How are we going to designate this? You know?
They make you scramble. And I've always thought that they produced.
They had good players, but they produced more about their
Their production was based more on their intelligence as a
(01:44:59):
football team than it was just hey, we're gonna line
up and whip your butts that that they'll play that way.
But they really were about creating mismatches and opportunities to
get guys free through confusion, and you've got to be
a smart football team to do that. And I think
they've made some adjustments. They've gotten read of some people,
(01:45:19):
They've brought some new people in that haven't figured that
part of the game out, and so I think they're
a little bit slow, but they always seem to find
a way. You know, if you look at them historically,
September is probably the month where they've lost more games
here in the last five or six years. Then they
seem to get it together and all of a sudden
they're unbeatable to come late in the season. What about
(01:45:41):
the Steelers and in that offense, and I know the
three and one um and you know, maybe they read
their present press clippings and that's why they lost to
the Bears. And the defense did a great job against
the Ravens, whose offense is a complete mess. What's your
sense of why the Steelers aren't better. I just think
they lack offensive continuity. I think that um Levan Bell
(01:46:05):
not being a camp and you heard kind of the
scuffle if you will, between Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown and
Antonio Brown being you know, having a lack of maturity. Um,
Bryant has come back after being gone last year, and
it just takes offense is such a rhythmic thing. And
when I think of the Steelers, you know, back in
when I was growing up in the seventies, you thought
(01:46:27):
about the Steel Curtain and you know, you thought about
you know, it's kind of what what resonated with you.
Even though they're offensively they were awesome, but it was
one of those things you thought about. I think, what
do you think about the Steelers this day and age?
You're thinking about Big Ben in that offense and Antonio
Brown and Lebian Belt and and offense is always going
to be behind defense early in the season because you're
(01:46:48):
not allowed to practice anymore, and so it just takes time. Um.
And then you coupled that with you know, a lack
of production from Levy on Belt early, maybe a lack
of continuity between Brian between and between Brown and Roethlisberger
because you don't practice anymore in the preseason, you don't
play anymore in the preseason because you're protecting assets. So
(01:47:11):
I do believe, Um, like you said, their upside potential
is much larger going forward, Like They've got a lot
of room to grow. Um. Kansas City just seems to
be clicking from day one, and you know, and good
for them there four and all because of it. But
I'm with you on the Steelers. I think offensively they
will they will eventually get in sync. The great Mark
(01:47:34):
Slayer at three times Super Bowl champion and you can
see him on Fox Sports One as well as calling
games on Big Fox, staying great stuff as always, man,
an awesome job calling the game. Can't wait to hear
you in a couple of weeks when you when your
next game is. And I appreciate you joining us. Yeah,
you got it, my friend, take care of buddy. All right.
That's Mark slayre joining us on the Doug Gotlip Show.
We gotta We got into a great discussion over the
(01:47:55):
Fox slot e other day on Ki Nicola and Yokich.
The best player in the NBA that people outside of
the NBA or like you're a hardcore n b A fan,
I say, YOI You're like, oh, he's awesome, amazing, all
star caliber player, like tremendous, and you know you say
it to anybody else, like who is that place with
the Nuggets never watched them. Right, very well, Let's let's
(01:48:21):
catch up with Steve to Seger find out what else
is going on as we get ready for playoff baseball
again in the way, all right, a few NFL notes
before we get to the baseball. The Saints starting tackles
Zach Street with a bad knee now was placed on
injury reserve. The Titans signed quarterback Brandon whed and Carolina
signed veteran safety Jaris Bird and the Seahawks say rookie
running back Chris Carson had successful ankle surgery today. He's
(01:48:42):
expected to be out for the year. Tonight, it's the
a L wild Card game in New York. The Yankees
host Minnesota eight pm Eastern time. Starting pitchers each top
five in the r A in the a L this year,
Urban Santana sixteen and eight for the Twins going up
against the Yankees Luis Severina, who went fourteen and six.
He has face Minnesota just once, and it was a
couple of weeks ago. Three innings, three runs allowed, his
(01:49:04):
only bad start in the last month and a half.
Twins lugger Miguel soon No not active tonight. He had
missed six weeks late in the season due to a
leg injury. Jacobe Elsbury will be the Yankees d h tonight.
Yankees had the best home record in the American League
this year. Minnesota has lost twelve straight playoff games going
back to two thousand four. Although the Twins franchise just
last season, it lost a hundred three games, had the
(01:49:26):
worst record in the Majors, and here they are in postseason.
Aaron Judge of New York ranked number one in jersey
sales this season, taking over the top spot from Chris
Bryant of the Cubs, who was first the last couple
of years. This is based on sales on MLB Shop
since opening Day. Chris Bryant is second on the list,
then Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs, third, Clayton Kershaw's jersey, fourth,
Bryce Harper fifth. Boston will open the division series at
(01:49:49):
Houston Thursday, four pm Eastern Time. Houston's gonna start Justin
Verlander in Game one against Chris Sale Dallas Kaiko will
pitch Game two for Houston against Drew Pomeranz of Boston.
Back to you, I appreciate that, Steve. I saw this
article from a Pat uh mcmeniman who who talked about
(01:50:09):
the the Cleveland Browns have reached historic proportions in terms
they're losing with coach Hugh Jackson at the Helm. Jackson's
record is two in twenty nine, dating to the start
of the two thousand and fifteen season. Alias reported that
the Houston Oilers and excuse me, he's one in nineteen
(01:50:30):
during his time, they are two and twenty nine, since
they're over their last thirty one. So he's one in nineteen.
You're like, and and there's a discussion is to liked
a fire Hugh Jackson. Hugh Jackson is the Brett Brown
of the NFL, right, Like we all agree there like
Brett Brown tries to process still the head coach Philadelphia seventy.
I don't know if Brett Brown ultimately will be a
(01:50:51):
good enough coach. And I actually saw them some last
year and I was the I'm like the only guy
who like, look, I don't actually think he's done doing
that good job, even if I also don't believe um
anyone could have done a much better job in terms
of getting them to this place, Like you can do
a really good job of being the rebuilding coach while
(01:51:13):
not being the long term solution for the future, like
two different jobs. No one would have done better, would
have done much better with the roster that they had
last year, the roster they have this year, the litany
of injuries they had last year, the and and the
turnover and turmoil within the front office, as Hugh Jackson
has done the same thing for Brett Brown. Now, look,
(01:51:35):
I've watched the seventies sixers play and there's things missing
with what they run the shop. More importantly, the shots
they take at the end of a game, which I
think ultimately the seventies sixers will find a different coach
if they want to get to be a playoff team
and a winning playoff team, or Brown has to demand
better shots from them. But I watched him play last year.
(01:51:58):
I remember they're playing Cleveland. I was like, man, the shots,
Like she is terrible. But the job of a rebuilding
coach is not the job of a championship coach. Those
are two different jobs. This is a lot like being
the rebound chick or the rebound dude, And you have
to kind of know it going in. Like if you
date a woman who just she just getting done with
(01:52:19):
her she's just getting divorced. She's like this is her
first Hey, this is the first date I've been on
in fifteen years. Whatever. Like understand, like your relationship is
not going to go to the distance. You can't take
advantage of that. You have to be sympathetic to it.
On the other hand, you know, if you treat somebody
with kindness, you listen to them, you know what their
previous relationship didn't do, you can end up fu filling
(01:52:42):
a need and they can do the same for you.
All right, Like you can be a dude who's I'm
dating all these different you know women you think are bimbos.
Now you get a solid woman who's been in relationship
fifteen years, Like she can get out of you what
she needs out of you. You can get even if
it's not meant to go to the distance. Like on
every relationship last forever. And just because relationships don't last
(01:53:03):
forever doesn't make them bad relationships. It's no different than
radio shows. Like sometimes you got a radio show that's
not working, and they replaced the radio show in the
short term with something that's just stable, just stable, everyday, solid, stable,
(01:53:25):
knowing that look, we're not gonna do this. I'm not
gonna do a five year deal, but we just need
something solid for a year, show up on time, don't
do meth, you know, don't say crazy stuff. Just be
a normal, in this case, sports radio host, and then
(01:53:45):
we'll try and find somebody else who can take us
to a higher like that's and as long as you're
reasonable about those expectations. I think for Hugh Jackson, a
guy who failed in Oakland and had high hopes. Um
remember he brought in Carson Palmer. They played Carson Palmer
too soon. Now he goes to Cleveland and it was
(01:54:07):
a job. This is there's a reason that no one
wanted to take that Cleveland job. It's a hard job.
But I would I would not even think about making
a change if I'm Cleveland right now, and I'd probably
allow him at least to see some of the benefits
of all the beatings that he's taken. The one thing
(01:54:27):
you can rest assure though, is for Hugh Jackson, it
will be really hard for him to get his career
record back to a lot like Bret Brown. A lot
like Bret Brown. The Steelers are the most dysfunctional three
and one team that I've ever seen. I don't I
think it's that close. I'll tell you why. Up coming next.
(01:54:48):
But first, if you've noticed my bright and shechery disposition, No, seriously,
I'm smiling constantly. It's because I've been sleeping great, and
I've been sleeping great in my Casper mattress. My wife
loves it. I like it. Even my dog hops up
on his like sinks into, like, oh, my kids keep
climbing into my bed and like, look, we thought we
(01:55:08):
got past that stage. My girls are eleven and my
little boys eight, and they keep climbing and they just
kind of sink into, like, oh Dad, can we get one? Well? Look,
Casper ships right to your door for free. They have
this how they do it size box where open up
a regular size box and poof out pops a mattress.
And if you buy a Casper mattress by going to
(01:55:29):
Casper dot com using the code Gottlieb, not only do
you get fifty bucks towards your purchasing your mattress, but
you get it for a hundred nights risk free, risk free.
So go to Casper dot com used to code Gottlieb,
and you'll get that fifty dollars towards your purchase of
your mattress. And I mean, if you don't like it.
I means there's something wrong with you, but you probably will.
(01:55:49):
I'm sure you'll like it, but you get a hundred knights,
and if you don't like it, they pick it up
from your door and refund your money. That's simple. Simply
go to Casper dot com. That code is go O
T T, L I E B. Casper dot com code
is Gottlieb. Terms and conditions apply. What True Car You

Doug Gotlib Show, Fox Sports Radio. Everybody's talking about LaVar
Ball taking his kid out of school, Like, look, I
disagree with it. I mean, I think, let somebody else
coach your kid, because he still gets a chance to
coach his kid in a U ball. But I don't
think it's the end of the world. I don't think
(01:56:33):
it's the worst parenting move of all time. Do I
think it it shrinks the possibility that he becomes uh
an NBA star, Yeah, I do, because I think he
needs another voice. I think there's things that he needs
to clean up in his game. He takes terrible shots plays,
zero defense. His body hasn't changed at all. But there
(01:56:54):
are worse things in the world than not playing thirties
some odd high school basketball games which in which your
dad doesn't get along with the coach, get to the press,
the press, m m m m m m m. Steve
the second what do you got, buddy, Well, that's shots
less for the kid if he's not gonna play. As
(01:57:18):
far as Ben Roethlisberger will start with the Steelers. The
Steelers QB called Antonio Brown's sideline flare up unfortunate. The
sound from his weekly a radio spot with ninety three
point seven the fan he would just come talk to
me and tell me then I killed him on display whatever. Um.
That goes a lot further than than throwing a temper tancer.
It was the second quarter of a win against the
(01:57:39):
Ravens last weekend. Brown broke free on a double move.
Roethlisberger worked the other side of the field and from
the sideline. After the play, Antonio Brown flipped the gatorade bucket,
shrugged off the offensive coordinator as that coach tried to
calm him down. Excellent work there from John Ramos. That
was a temper tantrum. Uh, good for Big Ben calling
(01:58:01):
him out. On the other hand, big Ben missed him
and I'm sure yeah, Like you know how this is
with with NFL plays, right, They have plays that they
put in for each week called explosives, like, look, we're
gonna putting this explosive and when we run it, we're
gonna get a touchdown and by all estimations like that
was exposed to play and Ben missed him. Well, how
(01:58:24):
you handle it? How do you handle Uh? Failure is
as important as as anything and or somebody else's failure.
But this is if you want to know why the
Steelers are three and one and no one is saying
they're the best team in the NFL, it's because there
appears to be a ton of dysfunction within that team.
Levian wasn't there for training camps, so he's not sharp.
(01:58:46):
They're not in rhythm. Big Ben maybe a little bit
past his prime. Todd Haley and Big Ben, though they
get along better, it's not like they get along great.
And then Antonio Brown was rewarded for bad behavior and
the Facebook live thing last year, and he's acting like
the entitled brat that he is. There you go, yeah,
be a professional was the quote from coach Mike Tomlin.
We talked about Jay Cutler and Adam Gaze earlier in
(01:59:08):
the show. Remember, the Dolphins had Ryan Tannehill injured before
the season starts, so instead of Cutler going to Fox
to start a Sunday career, Adam Gates was familiar with Cutler,
and everybody thought, oh, this is gonna work out very well. Instead,
we get to the point where the Dolphins were shut
out by the Saints defense last weekend for crowd out loud.
Twenty to nothing was the final Gaze the coach said,
(01:59:30):
if we protect Jay and give him a second to
throw the ball will be all right. If he's gonna
get hit from start to finish, I don't care who
you put back there. It's it's a it's a great point,
but he clearly has Jay Cutler's back right, And I
think some of it is Gaze understands how Jay Cutler
is wired. Like Jay is not one of these guys
that can take any sort of blame. It should be
pointing out that weird things happen overseas. It just is
(01:59:52):
weird things happen. You land overseas and you realize that
not all women shade their armpits, that that yodorin is
in fact an option. Well, they were just about shutout
against the Jets the way before. Everybody eats yogurt. What
is the deal with? Like, I like yogurt too, but
they're yogurt isn't as good as our yogurt. They're stinky.
Cheese is stinkier than our cheese. And Blake Bortles played
awesome in London. So Blake Mortles played awesome in London.
(02:00:14):
Anything can in fact happen. We must get to this story.
The lawsuit from college basketball referee John Higgins after heat
I talk about fan base going over the line, after
he was harassed, to say the least, after he was
a referee in Kentucky's March Madness loss of this year.
Lawsuit today filed in US Districtcording, Nebraska, where Higgins businesses.
(02:00:38):
This is exclusive from the news site The Athletic a
lawsuit against Kentucky Sports Radio because they, the lawsuit alleges,
helped the fans along in this harassment. How they help
him alone because they on their website with allowed people
to post the business address and phone number of Higgins company,
(02:00:59):
and they will end up getting a few thousand threatening
phone calls, even calls at home to him and his wife,
death threats as well after a Kentucky North Carolina No,
I remember the death threats or whatever. I mean. You know,
nothing says stupid fan base like threatening the life of
John Higgins. Um Higgins is a guy who can come
across very as being very arrogant. But I actually think
(02:01:21):
he's a pretty good ref don't believe me, just ask him.
And but nobody should be threatened with their life. I
don't know. I don't know the legal aspect of it.
If people using their website to post his business addressed,
which could be a public address, I don't know, you
know how liable they would be there, I guess. I
guess we'll find out in court. Get out there and
(02:01:43):
pressed that the press. Kyle Winniham's gonna join us tomorrow.
That's Utah's head football coach. Anybody know where Utah's ranked,
Like it's one of those they're still ranked. They're still
doing their job. And oh yeah, by the way, a
guy who played at B y U and B Y
this program has fallen off mightily, mightily. Utah's head footballer
(02:02:05):
was there four and oh on the season in the
PAC twelve. Ned Colletti, former GM of the Dodgers, going
to join us, plus Peter King will join us. Look,
it's not that we don't like you, Minnesota, we just
don't care as much about you. Plus you got the
Super Bowl, so we need the Yanks to win to night.
All is better when the Yanks are losing an important
playoff games. Instead of playing games, this is the dugoutand
