Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're boom Up, America. Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio,
coming to you from the red hot City of Angels,
where the Dodgers hopped out to a one game to unlead,
where Alonzo balls and the crosshairs of John Wall and
the Wizards, and we've got two viable playoff teams in
(00:22):
the NFL. But we're here to talk about all of
your teams and frankly, all of your problems, America. That's
what we do here. We'll talk about weed in the
NBA should why I do not believe it should be
on legal Uh, even though every event I've been to
now in southern California, as soon as the event is over,
my children asked me, what's that smell? Before I said
(00:45):
they'll get I have to say that that is Uh,
somebody may have broken wind anyway. Uh. We'll talk about
Marquel Foltz is jump shot being uh boobard a little bit.
And we gotta talk with Travis Benjamin from the l
A Chargers, who took one to the house. We'll ask
(01:08):
him what it's been like to play this first season
in Los Angeles. He's basically their home run hitter. He's
there Justin Turner, which brings us to last night where
I took my son. As you guys know, if you
listen to the entire show, my son Hays Gotlieb joined
us on the way. My thanks to my boy BC
Brendan Cotter, who picked up my son and took him
(01:29):
to the Dodger game. I'll let me just kind of
quick summation. If you haven't been to Dodger Stadium. I
think it's the best place to watch a sporting event
in the United States. I do, I do um. I
love the Rose Bowl. But when the Rose Bowl does
not host that many events and it hasn't been even
though it's been modernized several times, it hasn't been as
(01:52):
modernized as well. And it's just I don't know. Maybe
there's more you can do in Dodger Stadium. Maybe it's
the proximity of downtown Los Angeles. I'm not really sure.
Like everything about Dodger Stadium is perfection, Like they it's
a perfect baseball stadium. You got the parking structures all around.
You have you come in to a certain interest for
your level only so they don't have riff raff. If
(02:16):
you have good seats and if you have bad seats,
it's really hard to trapes down to the good seats.
Like actually kind of like that. I love the fact
that they kept all of the same stylings of the
nineteen fifties, so it feels it feels like nineteen fifties
Vegas or nineteen fifties Palm Springs, which is what nineteen
fifties Los Angeles looked like. When in the nineteen fifties
they built Dodger Stadium. All the while, the Jumbo Tron
(02:40):
they've been redone is still in the same place. So
it's not like Wriggley, I'm sure, and I've been to Wriggley,
and I love Wriggley, but it's almost a little bit
too old Fenway. Here's why Fenway sucks. It's so uncomfortable
to sit there, and the seats aren't all pointed towards
home plate that it's just not It's one of those
places looks really cool, check it off the check A box.
(03:00):
But it's not like I'd love to go watch a
game there. The sight lines are are clean. Um, you
have the background of the mountains and the sunset and
the palm trees. I really like it. It does take
like an hour and a half to get there from
the freeway, when if there was no traffic it would
(03:20):
take five minutes. But I love to understatement and a
great night with my son, who's eight years old, went
to his first World Series game and he loved it.
And he loved it. As we pointed out, he joined
us yesterday. He's a kershaw guy, he's a lefty. They
share the same birthday, they all. He also pitches, so
(03:41):
all those things check, check check. The dude had a
great time and even better, yet it was over in
two and a half hours, Like are you kidding me?
And for baseball you can tell me and you're right.
Baseball does not have a time limit. That doesn't necessarily
mean it's a good thing. That doesn't mean it should
(04:01):
go along like this is like a movie, right, movies
they have you don't want to cut out the really
really good stuff, but you gotta have some editorial discipline,
Hight like you'r you may win some awards when you
have this three hour epic, but you're not gonna win
(04:23):
at the box office too often when you have three
three and a half hour movies. I get it to
an hour and a half hour and forty especially especially um,
I don't know if you if you have children, you
know this when a new movie comes out or you're
trying to figure out what to go see. The two things,
(04:44):
the two or three things you'll check on right first
his parental rating. Second of all, is uh, what time
is it showing? And the third thing is what ramos
the length of the movie? Bank to the movie? If
it says ninety minutes, you're like, I'm in anything less sure?
How bad could it be? Like I took my kids
(05:04):
wants to see uh uh one of the Cats and
Dogs movies. They had like a series of cats and
dogs movies and it was awful. But it was like
seventy five minutes long and done, Take all my money, alright,
LOADO of a popcorn, candy, sugar high, come home, sugar low, collapse,
night Night by bye. Two hours and twenty eight minutes
(05:25):
of pure glory. Now, some of it was kaikel and
and Kershaw we're dealing. Some of it is this is
how baseball has played. Strikeout, strikeout, strikeout, some walks and
home runs all all of the scoring was done by
home run last night at Dodger Stadium. But some of
it also was homeplate umpiring. Hey, you want to think
(05:46):
speed things along, ha ha ha, sit out, and that's
what we had. Like we can get to these subtle
nuances of baseball. Like I I actually impersonally have the
belief that it was a mistake to pitch Kenley Jansen
last night. Brendan Morrow came in, got a one two
three inning. They did foul. They did foul one off
(06:08):
and one was a flair was hit the right field.
They caught too. But I'm a I'm a believer that
the less time, especially when you're American national, they don't
see Kenley Jansen. They haven't seen Kenley Jansen this year,
and I know it's a cutter, but the less you
see him, the harder it is to pick up late
in this series. And so I especially when you have
a game tonight, I don't want to say I don't
(06:29):
want to see him. And sure only three batters saw him,
so there's not that much damage done. But it was
the middle of the order. When you got a two
run lead. You can bring in Kenley Jansen after give
putting one runner on. You're allowed to do that. You
know moral's pitching, Well, leave him out there. And hide
Kenley Jansen because you haven't seen his stuff and it's
still the secret stuff. Right. The way I the way
(06:51):
I relate to not showing Kenley Jansen stuff is if
you've ever been to a restaurant when you're really really hungry.
Ever been a restaurant you're really really hungry, and you're like, man,
that was a amazing and then you go back a
week later you're not that hungry, but you set up
the date and you sit down and you order the
exact same thing, Like, wasn't really that good because you've
kind of adjusted your whole mentality to it. But I'd
(07:12):
make the case that's one of the things that led
to the Cubs bullpen struggling last year in the World
Series and at times in the playoffs, right that Joe
Madden only used the same three guys over and over again,
and at some point you're like, Okay, I know what's coming,
and once you so much of it's about how many
times I've seen a guy. In addition to the more
you use them, the less they're likely to locate. But
(07:35):
I mean, like, look, the longest games in World Series history,
Red Sox Rockies, was four hours nineteen minutes. Even this
year the Cubs Gnats had a four hour, thirty seven
minute marathon. The Indians and Yankees Game five, which was
a great game and a and a deciding game, was
three hours and thirty eight minutes. Like they're just long,
(07:59):
so you can be you can be one of these
guys that says a baseball still has to hold true
to his virtues. Baseball can't have a timeline. Baseball can't
have like that's great. Look they still saying God bless
America and had the seventh inning stretch and they did
both verses of take me out to the ball game.
You know some places only do one verse. They did.
(08:19):
They do both verses. They had time for the national anthem,
they had time for the jet flyover, They had time
they had they did not have any I think they
had one mid inning pitching change. Kaiko was brought out
in the middle of the game. Outside of that, which
to me, I don't I don't need a warm up guy.
All right, you want to cut down on time. Two
things you can do is if you're gonna make a switch,
(08:40):
you don't have to go and if you go to them,
you go to the mound. You're making a pitching change.
You can't go to the mound as the manager go
out there and go like, uh, imagine Tyron Loeu going
out in the middle of the game, going how you feeling, Lebron,
I feel like coming out now? I feel good? All right,
catch your breath for a second. I'm just contend like
I'm talking to you. Okay, all right, here we go.
We got two outs, two on no, no, it's about bsketball.
(09:00):
We're down five. There's a minute thirty to go. Catch
your breath, you guys ready, okay, good, you know what
we're running, and you go back in. If you want
to speed it up even greater, you make a pitching change.
Just point, just like the just like what we're doing
with uh uh intentional intentional walk you know. Point you
you're out and bring a guy in from the from
(09:21):
the bullpen. And when he comes in from the bullpen,
he's pitching. Immediately. They do have mounds in the bullpen, correct,
They are warmed up in the bullpen right then, they
don't need anything else. Let's go. But the biggest change
was you had a homeplate umpire that was doing this
ha and it was great. I got three home runs.
(09:41):
I got outstanding pitching. I got eleven strike out some Kershaw.
I still got to see the Dodgers. I still had
some great energy and everyone was home before o'clock coming
out of Dodger Stadium. No matter how far away you lived,
I got it all. Here's Dave Roberts on Clayton Kershaw.
Tonight was one of those nights. I think the first
(10:01):
time in a while that we've really seen all three
of his pitches syncd up um, he just was repeating
the delivery, held the velocity, was still in the baseball
where he needed to where he wanted to. Um very
talented team over there, and for him to get ahead,
keep him off balance, work in front, to back up
and down to all quadrants. I mean, this was a
(10:23):
special night for Clayton now. It was. It was that was.
It was a big night for Clayton Kershaw. And he
got through the seventh inning, even after Corey Seger bobbled
what should have been a surefire double playball to get
him out of the seventh inning, to which anybody who's
watched baseball was like, oh WHOA. You know, almost always
an error is what precedes a home run. It's the
(10:45):
two things that usually happened in baseball is there's an
error or a picture thinks they get strike three and
they get squeezed by the home plate umpire and they
roll their eyes and they shake their head and the
crowd goes uh. And then the next bitch it's a tater, right,
and Kershaw kept it together, had incredible with them. I'll
say this about the heat. It was hot. It was
(11:07):
It was really really hot. Now, it wasn't Southern heat,
wasn't Midwestern heat. It wasn't summer heat in other parts
of the country where it's super humid. But it was hot.
It was a hundred degrees at game time. And that
that's hot for any place. But I would also point
out that that's more like baseball weather then freezing cold
October weather in Yankee Stadium or at Progressive Field or
(11:31):
wherever the hell Minnesota plays in that outdoor stadium, right
like all of those places. That's these guys are actually
more used to playing in the heat because baseball is,
in fact a summer sport, has always been a summer sport. Uh.
So big for Kershaw, Big for the Dodgers does not
buy any chance. Mean this series is over because you
got Verlander going tonight for the Astros, which is their
(11:52):
strongest likelihood for an outstanding pitching performance and a win.
You got the Justin Turner story. The best thing about
the Justin Turner thing is he's the he's the guy
that all the kids love. So when you're sitting there
next to an eight year old and we tried to
start to wave twice, that didn't work. We just did
we try to start to wave. We got hats. We
there's like one foul ball like that that was how
(12:13):
well pitched a game that was I think there were
less than ten foul balls the entire day. Um. But
in an effort to keep his attention, like Justin Turner
comes up and everybody pays attention. Of course, he hits
the game winning home run. A guy who was d
F A designated for assignment by the New York Mets
is so far the most prodigious hitter we've seen in
(12:35):
the postseason in the modern era of baseball. Wow. Travis
Benjamin joins the show up coming next. I gotta ask
him about being a home run hitter right like basically
his his his role in playing wide receiver for the
Chargers is hey Travis go along, Right, Hey, Travis, go along.
(12:56):
But you know what, once or twice the game they
hit him. The Chargers starting to believe they're supposed to
win games that in the past they would always lose.
We'll ask him up coming next, But first I gotta
tell you if I'm look I got home, I said
before ten, fell asleep on my Casper mattress. And one
of the reasons I'm so bright, cheery, and frankly good looking,
it makes you better looking. Well look, I'm good looking
(13:18):
to begin with, but I'm better looking because of this
Casper mattress I'm sleeping in. It's an absolute no brainer,
a high quality mattress that's at a more affordable price,
and I'm sleeping cool and comfortable. I told you how
how it was in southern California, right, The Casper mattress
is just cooler based upon how it's built. And if
you don't love it, you can sleep on it for
a hundred nights, that's three months. You can do whatever
(13:41):
you want on it. Yep, you can even do that.
And if you don't like it, let's take it back.
Risk free. Sleeping on a mattress is the best way

Doug Gottlive Show, Fox Sports Radio. Calvin Benjamin's Calvin Travis Benjamin,
(14:24):
him and I do that. I don't know why I
did that. I've done that before. Maybe that's why Travis
hasn't called in yet. But he's gonna call it and
join his Travis Benjamin, who's a wide receiver and return
specialist for the Sanity San Diego. See I keep doing that.
L A Chargers, These are jokes. L A Chargers is
gonna join us. Sure you wanna try the skin? Hey,
(14:45):
Ramas hit a little music here real quick. Yeah. Doug
Gottli Show, Fox Sports Radio. At least I got that right.
I didn't screw that one up right. Travis Benjamin from
the l A Chargers, who's a wide receiver kick returner,
took not one but two to the house, two touches,
two touchdowns for the Bolts in their win first game
in the powder blue uniforms. He'll be joining us momentarily, um, momentarily.
(15:12):
There's there's a lot that goes into We'll get some
NFL talk upcoming. So look, John wall is going to
match up with a Lonzo Ball tonight at Staples and
uh Marcine Gore Tott marcin gor Tott tweeted, actually replied
to another tweet a LaVar Ball tweet about what uh
(15:35):
a Lonzo is gonna do tonight and said, you know,
we're gonna abuse him for forty eight minutes. And I
do think that's true. I want to quote the great
poet Laureate Snoop Doggie Dog also known as Snoop Lion,
um any other nicknames, any other a k S for
Snoop Dogg you want to use ramos. I think the
(15:57):
Snoop Lion was the one that people forget about. So
that was a good one. Yeah, Snoop line Snoop Doggy
dog uh Snoop do double g all. Note, I want
to quote the great poet Laureate Snoop Snoop Dogg when
he said, and I'm paraphrased, man I unquote a direct quote,
is his daddy put him in a lion's deb with
(16:19):
some pork chop drawers on it, with some pork chop
drawers on. That's a great line. It's a great line.
Only Stoop can say that on National TV and T
n T and go like yeah that that actually is
incredible basketball analysis. It was so his order. Here's the
white guy translation. Can I give you the white guy translation.
(16:41):
His dad's writing checks that his body can't cash. Oh
we went top gun. He went top gun. Thank you,
Thank you very much, Thank you very much. Um. So,
part of it is it's it's important to remember that
at Alonzo's nineteen. It's important remember Alonzo is not fully
(17:04):
healthy right now. And I do agree with Scott Brooks.
You guys, hear what Scott Brooks said yesterday. Scott Brooks,
who was a friend of mine, friend of the show,
may get him on today, may get him on later
on here in the season we'll see. I mean, he's
got a ton of people because he went to UC Irvine.
He lived in southern California in the off season, even
(17:27):
late in his career as the Oklahoma City thunder coach.
So when he comes back, family, friends, everybody around here.
He doesn't have a ton of time. But he did,
he did say that, like, look his dad, he said, like,
my dad left when I was two. My dad left
when I was two. Essentially, So the fact that we're
(17:49):
getting on him for getting on LaVar for what he's
saying and what he's doing for Alonzo ball, you know,
he has a he has a completely different sensibility in
terms of father. There's you know, whether they're being helicopter
parents or whatever. Um And I understand that, but like,
(18:10):
let's not pretend like the var is perfect. A Lonzo
does not have good defensive fundamentals. Frankly does not have
good shot fundamentals, and his body he is not ready
to play in the NBA. Like there's a there's a
reason that guys are better in their second year. It's
not just because uh it's it's not just because they've
(18:33):
seen everything. That's part of it. Adjusting to pitching adjusting
to the speed of pitching will help you if you're
a hitter. Adjusting to the speed of uh of the
NBA game or the NFL game will help you as
a player in the NBA NFL. It's also because it
gives you a year to build your body, to change
your body. You need that year where you don't have
games that just wear you down. And he hasn't had
(18:57):
that opportunity. He got done playing in college. Then he
started prepping again with his dad for the NBA draft.
But they're not gonna fix his shot. Then that gonna
fix his body. Then then he gets drafted and he
goes to Summer League. From Smmer League right to training camp,
Like it's you're kind of on a rocket ship and
you really need the time away. You need the time
(19:18):
to build your body. Look no further than Ben Simmons.
Like his jump shots still not there, but his body
is better. He grew two inches. Like playing that first
year is really hard. You really kind of needed a
red shirt year, and that's what these guys have all done. Um,
(19:38):
but his dad is not doing him any favors. Calling
out the John Walls of the world, calling out the
Steph Curries, of the world because one the guys he
doesn't call out like a Patrick Beverley. They've always taken
it personal. They're always gonna take it out on you.
They're always gonna come coming for you, coming for you.
(19:59):
But in the NBA, there's nowhere to hide. That's a
position to which you can't hide if you're if you're
not ready. It's it's one of those deals to which
it's like in in the NFL. The reason you have
to be very cautious about drafting a quarterback is if
(20:21):
you're drafting quarterback, you're gonna be forced to play him.
And it's not just that if he plays and he stinks,
it sets your franchise back. But with like look at
Jared Goff. He was bad last year, bad and now
Jared Goff is much better in year two, which is
gonna cause more and more NFL franchises when they have
(20:44):
a bad young quarterback to go. You know what, Jared
Goff was bad year one. We put some better place
around him, we put a different offensive coordinate around him.
We'll fix it. Some guys are not fixable. Additionally, when
they're bad and you pull them and you don't start them,
they're standing over there and a with a clipboard and
a hat on. As opposed to, if you draft a
(21:05):
corner that can't play, you can play him in the nickel.
Maybe you can make them into a safety. If you
have to safety that can't play, maybe you can make
them into a linebacker. You can find downs to play
him in. So there is greater reward when you hit,
but there's also a lot greater risk. And in the
NBA there's a ton of risk if you're a bad wing,
right if you don't play well like um Jalen Brown
(21:30):
last year for the Boston Celtics, didn't play a ton
came out the bench, was a wing. But do you
remember one his dad wasn't calling people out and saying
it's comfortable, but too you don't get put on the
same island you get put on now playing point guard
in the NBA, where it's hard enough to guard these
guys when you're really good defensively, think about it when
(21:50):
you're not prepared defensively to play against guys who are
going to have fifty opportunities to take you, and they're
going to take you and make you look bad. So
I agree with while I think there's a lot of
good that LaVar has done. And anytime a dad is
(22:11):
invested in his son's life, like, look, I'm doing that.
I'm trying to adjust him, trying to not be um oppressive,
to not be in some of the ways the negative
my dad was. On the other hand, my dad, my
my son's playing on an AU team right third and
fourth grader. She's probably the youngest one. And you know what,
after watching call practices, I just started helping out and
now I'm coaching the team. Why it's not because I'm
(22:33):
but it's it's really hard to sit there and watch
and you're like, wait, they need to be doing passing
and pivoting and understanding the rules the spatial concepts to
basketball before we start having him do euro steps. But
I also want to have balance and let him play
for other people and and have him play the right way.
(22:55):
So there's there's a lot to it. It's not easy
to coach your kid. And I'm not saying that LaVar
has totally screwed him up. But remember the LaVar that
raised Alonzo is not the LaVar you see now. He's not.
He wasn't empowered by the media then as he is now. Additionally,
he wasn't the perfect coach, the perfect parent, He hasn't
raised the perfect player. And whereas some of the things
(23:18):
he's done has helped, some of the things he continues
to say and do hurt The True Card. You can
find out what other people in the area pay for
the same car you're looking for, new or used. Visit
True Card enjoy more confident car buying experience. Let's check
in with Dan Buyer in the latest God Damn Dodgers
trying to go up too Oh. Tonight on the Houston
Astros in Game two of the World Series is they
put Rich Hill on the moss as a tough lineup,
(23:39):
and again it's it's it's really gonna be just a
great battle of you know, effort, really on both sides.
You see guys like jose L to just some really
great players and great people, and with that they bring
that effort. You know you're gonna see it from their
side and you're gonna see it from our side. Now
opposing Hill tonight is Justin Verlander of the Astros. Covered
starts on Fox at seven thirty Eastern time. Is its
(24:02):
Game two of the Fall Classic Red soxecond Basement. Dustin
Pedroia gonna miss seven months of action following surgery on
his knee. Brown's rookie defensive end Miles Garrett is in
concussion protocol. The Lions on kicker Matt Prator to a
three year extension, while Colin Kaepernick will attend the next
meeting involving NFL owners and players that centers around social issues,
(24:23):
but it is not known when that meeting will take place. Finally,
Doug doesn't look like Dwayne Wade's gonna go tonight for
the Calves as they faced the Brooklyn Nets, and the
Nets likely aren't gonna have D'Angelo Russell considered doubtful because
of a sprayed knee. I've seen a story about Ben Gordon.
I just saw a headline on it. He kind of
went off the rails a little bit, was that Ben going.
(24:44):
Former six Man of the Year Ben Gordon was reportedly
hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation after he was involved in
a confrontation with a woman that required police intervention at
his business in Mount Vernon, New York. W course. He's
from Mount Vernon, played at Yukon, was six Man of
the Year in the NBA. A woman told police that
she packed her bag to leave after getting to an
argument with Gordon, then he began destroy it, to destroy
(25:05):
and throw everything inside the store. Gordon, thirty one, then
reportedly locked her inside the building. The woman informed police
he moved to the back of the business, where the
officers spotted him in possession of a box cutter. Emergency
officers cut through a glass window to let the woman out.
Police entered to find Gordon in a bathroom, where they
handcuffed him. Yikes, he was apparently. TMZ reported on Wednesday
(25:29):
that Gordon was sending threatening message to people leading up
to the incident, like one of the things I want
to get into medical marijuana. No medical marijuana use in
the NBA. We'll do the top of the next hour X.
NBA Commissioner David Stern said that he believes marijuana should
be off the banned substance list in the NBA. And
(25:53):
I disagree with that. I'll tell you why I've come
in top of the art and I'm not one of
these is like yeah, yeah, you want to ride pine,
you smoke the wacky tobaccy right, Like, I'm this is
not refer madness, is not nineteen fifties where I want
to lock everybody up who's caught with, you know, with
a joint in their pocket. I'm reasonab about it. I
understand what's happening in society, but I also understand that
(26:15):
we are. When you're running a business, there's certain things
you can ask of people in your business that aren't
illegal in society. Right, aren't illegal in society? I mean,
perfect example of it is you're allowed, if you're twenty
one years old to have a drink. Right, you're allowed
(26:39):
to have a couple of drinks as well as you
don't drive. But how do you think my bosses would
react if? What's this little bar over here called around
the corner? It looks really cool. I've never been there.
We should go there for a drink. Blue Dog Cafe,
Blue Dog Tavern. You know, hey, look, eleven thirty fellas listen.
I know we're prepping for the show where we're going
through some different stories. Let's go over and have a
(27:00):
quick beer. How would that go over? It's not illegal,
but you could be fired for even if you didn't
say anything wrong. You can't you can't get on the
radio or come to work with booze in your breath,
and some jobs you can some sales jobs. You go
and you have, you know, a martini lunch, right, take
(27:22):
that and make it exponentially. It's just different when it's weed.
And I'm not even talking about the weed ideas of
the seventies, eighties, and nineties. I get to that top
of the hour. The New York Giants are. They're not
good now. Part of it is they just have injuries.
(27:44):
Sterling Shepherd has been hurt obviously, Odell Beckham Jr. Is
out for the year. Brandon Marshall's hurt. Those are your
top three wide receivers. But Brandon Marshall wasn't good before
he was ever hurt, right he was. He looked over
the hill before he ever got injured. Stirling Shepherds had
some drops, and Odell Beckham Jr. Was hurt to start
the year, get got back and as talented as O.
(28:06):
B J Is, he occasionally will have a little bit
of drops. They hadn't been amble run the football. They
haven't been able to protect Eli and though their defense
was rebuilt last year and made the playoffs. There's some
flaws to this roster. But there's something that people do now,
um and I think we see through it. A little bit.
(28:27):
It's called martyrdom, right, It's called martyrdom. And here's what
I mean about martyrdom. Jerry Reach is the general manager
of the New York Giants. He said this in regards
to their roster. This is National Football League. If you
can't take criticism, you should quit. You know, if you
if you're if you a general manager of of football team,
(28:49):
or if you're a player, or you're a quarterback or
you play any position, if you can't take criticism, you
should quit. This is the roster that I put together
on the reason we're one in six, but we do
have to play better as a team. Again, we lose together.
We went together. I believe everybody is accountable here for
what goes on. Our coaches are accountable, our players are accountable.
We're one and six together. But you can put it
all on me. Right, Hey, we're doing this together, but
(29:12):
you can put it all on me. Martyrdom is a
display of feigned or exaggerated suffering to obtain the sympathy
or admiration of others. You haven't hadn't been in your life.
It does that, right, I mean, I just my boss
and parking and traffic and not make enough money and
taxes and my mom's driving me crazy. My wife's driving
(29:34):
me crazy, and my dad's sick, and my dog is
I gotta put my dog down or like, you know,
I've just had a really rough rough go of things,
and this is Look, I understand that the business isn't
doing well, but you can put it all on me
because I haven't been doing a good enough job of
managing my I know, I know Jimmy hasn't met his
(29:54):
sales now, but you can put that on me. I know, Billy,
you know, Billy was Billy had his fly down and
had two minutes to drinks around. Uh, that client we
were trying to reel in and kind of made an
ass of himself. But you can put it on me
because Billies under my watch. That's what Jerry Reese is doing. Right. Look,
we win as a team, we lose the team. Put
it on me. I know we're we're one in six.
(30:15):
I mentioned we're one in six with one and six, Hey,
that's bad. I can take criticism, criticize me all you want.
He's doing the martyrdom thing, which works, usually works, but
at some point we're like, yeah, you know what it is?
Your fault. You did build an off a bad offensive life,
You did build an offensive. The martyrdom thing is, it's
(30:36):
it's hard to see if it's self deprecation or if
it's you know, if it's or if it's really just
or if it's taking the bullets for others, or if
it's martyrdom trying to feign or exaggerate, suffering to obtain sympathy.
I feel bad for Jerry Reese right, done such a
good job, rebuilt a defense. George Jenkins been awesome. Wasn't healthy?
(30:58):
Odell Beckham Jr. You know he's the one who drafted
battle Dlde Beckham Jr. People wondered, but he missed the
first four games. Coffin was mad. And then when he
Alway's totally worth it. And you know what, Uh, they
made the change with coordinators, you know, taking the play
calling out of the head coach's hands, and and they
won a game. And if they were healthy, and and
(31:20):
I feel bad for Jerry's He's done so many the
right things and the injuries have just decimated them. We
should give him another year. See if the Giants buy it.
An NFL MVP has learned from his past and has
become a better person because of it. Real news or
fake news. I will tell you next. Don't let the
name fool you. Dollar Shave Club has way more than
just razors. Try their first month starter set with travel

all for just five dollars. After that, replacement cartridges ship

Shave Club dot com. Slash Gottlieb Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox
Sports Radio. We saw home runs last night at the
Dodgers stadium, right three of them in fact, like if
you hadn't sat down yet. Dodgers first batter up hits
(32:06):
a home run, and then of course we saw two
more home runs, culminating in um Justin Turner's to run
home run in the seventh inning, which ended up being
the difference three to one. Speaking of home run hitters
in Los Angeles, let's let's welcome in the Chargers home
run hitter. He's Travis Benjamin, He's from the U. He
hits home runs, give him the ball, scores touchdowns right
(32:28):
at one touch at one touch at wide receiver touchdown,
and takes a kick to the house as well. How
are you I'm doing good? Man? Hey listen, I I
saw some video when you played against the Giants and
Philip Rivers said, run somewhere fast and get open, right?
Is that essentially the game plan for you as kind
(32:55):
of right on the field. He always tell me he
was speed and just gets over here. Put about that.
What's what's changed with you guys? The last couple oh
and four to start a couple of games, probably three
of which you you should have won to start the season.
That that's the story historically the last couple of years
with the Chargers, games you should win, you find a
way to lose. What's changed the last couple of weeks.
(33:16):
Just get tired of losing. Man. When you when you
get at a certain point of the scene where hey man,
we were tired of losing them this way. We're tired
of clience happening in his way. So if we put
four or five best effort and continues to push and
continue to those times we need. Yeah, but how do
you how do you do that? Like? Look, you've you've
run into a bad stretchy right like you were with
(33:36):
the Browns and they would lose games and then you're
with the Charging like you're losing game. How do you
get out of that mindset? Because you know and maybe
you don't have it. I mean, athletes don't have as
much as fans where it gets close and the expectation
is something's gonna go wrong instead of the expectation something's
gonna go right. How do you how does that change?
Just keep pushing knowing that we all professional in the
(33:58):
league and they pay us the win. So once you
have the mentally and the mindset to go out there
and just keep pushing and take a play by play
and somehow, some way the winds come on our side.
Stull gotlie show. That's the voice of Travis Benjamin home
run hitter essentially for the l A Charges. They go
on the road take on the New England Patriots. Uh
this upcoming Sunday, that's a ten o'clock West Coast start time.
(34:22):
A couple of things quickly on last week, Uh, Philip
Rivers said, Hey, we talked about the fact that sometimes
we don't have that that good at home crowd, Like
we gotta play through what what was actually said about
the crowd and how to play through the fact that
there were so many. For example, Bronco fans this past week. Um,
there's always our man said, knowing that we need to
do every and facility and hi high things goes that
(34:45):
there's always gonna be the other team got more fans
in us. But we just go out and take eating
every game as a home as an a weekend. Don't
matter how how loud they kid, just go out there
and play ball. Okay, Now you've got the Patriots this week,
and up until Sunday night, the Patriots hadn't stopped anybody.
Now all of a sudden they've taken on the Atlanta Falcons.
Who they got Julio, they got a ton of talent.
(35:07):
And yet all of a sudden that the Patriots starts
stopping people. What are they doing? What do you see
that the Patriots have done differently to be more successful
defensively of late as opposed to earlier in the season.
Apparently a pretty good team and you know that, Bill Belichick.
The guys are good at a justice to the teams
and and run in formation and plays that they want
(35:29):
to see. But we just gotta go up there, continues
to compete and continue to play hard and hopefully come
out with to win. Isn't it weird though? How this
division is? Like you start the year Chiefs or five
and oh and you guys, I mean you guys probably
didn't turn the ball over, probably could have beaten the Chiefs.
Now of a sudden, they've lost too in a row.
Not really sure what to make the Raiders, not really
sure what to make a Denver as you guys could
have beaten Denver up there, did beat him at your place.
(35:51):
And now you guys have quietly kind of won three
games in a row. What do you make of the
a f C West the vision man even every week,
I don't matter who in the viso and plays each other,
it's gonna go to the y and hopefully if we
keep this winning streak going on, and hopefully we'll be
on the top of end. Okay, you're the a f
C Special Teams Player of the week. What do you
get with that? Just to play it on the back end,
(36:13):
go forward and and we can do it again. You
know what you need? You need one of those um
what's it to you? Has now? The turnover chain? You need? Yeah?
You need you need like one of those chains like
when you make up make a special Teams play where
you can put on like a special team's chain. What
do you think about that? Oh, that would be great. Man.
Hopefully we can get a couple more than I can
invent and we can make up something that hopefully we
(36:34):
can get special Team Player of the Week award. I
like that. Like you score touch, you take one to
the house. You should have that same, like turnover chain,
something with the U on or maybe with the lightning
a charger's lightning bolt on it and put it on
like whoever makes good play gets taken from Now. Do
you know who came up with the turnover chain? At
to you? Um? I think that deef as the coordinator,
(36:54):
came up with up throughout earlier in the year and
they just rode with it. Man, hasn't been it for
college football so far. Yeah, so you approved as a
member of the U fraternity. You approve of it? Yeah,
I approve and I love it, man, I wanted. Yeah.
Nothing says Miami more than a gold cha. Hey, listen,
congrats a winning Player of the Week. Thanks so much
(37:16):
for joining us. Safe travels to New England. We appreciate
being our guest on Fox Sports Tradio. Appreciate him. That's
a m m m m m m m. All right,
Dan Buyer. I don't want to cut into your game time.
We could have Travis Benjamin play along if you wanted
to out the game today is alright, real moves are
fake news. Doug cam Newton walked out of another press
(37:37):
conference today after he didn't like a question from a reporter.
Gonna go real news. They're real and they're spectacle. Yes,
and here it was big plays, big hun plays kind
of good. Get to that energy. I think that you're
talking about. Does this offense anything? I know you had
had several at Detroit and New England. Do you think
you guys have the where we're all to do that
(37:59):
because this in the weekend on weekend. Nice question. Probably
did and then exit stage right for cam Newton left
after that question. Dudes having a rough year, man, Like,
this is not this is not that hard. You can
answer questions however you want. You can actually like listen
(38:20):
to the question, not your head, and then answer however
you want, even if it has nothing to do with
the actual question. He's having a tough go of it, man. Yeah,
if you make the reporter feel good, they'll be like,
all right, Tiger Woods hadn't said anything for twenty years.
That's a great question. I don't know. We'll work it
out next, alright, Real news are fake news. Forty three
year old Simeon Rice wants to make a comeback at
(38:41):
defensive end. That's real news, and they're spectac. Rice actually
sent out a tweet offering his services to his former team,
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I don't know if that. I
know Dwight Freedy is coming back, played for the Seahawks,
but forty three year old Simeon Rice. Have you seen
a picture of Simon Rice though? Yeah, he was ripped
and yeah, I just the problem is the problem is
(39:03):
not are you, for forty three a freak athlete? You are?
It's can you still run right? And and are you
gonna pull something once you come back? And that's a
that's a big question. Real news are fake news. Doug
Sixers president Brian Colangelo believes the reason rookie Marquell Folks
is having shoulder issues is because he changes his shooting
mechanics over and they're spectacular. Folks gonna miss the next
(39:25):
three games because of that shoulder. We even talked about
it yesterday that he had some fluid drain from it
and folks now dealing with that shoulder issue. Uh yeah,
he's really struggling and shoot the ball. Um, you know
he has not shot at three point shot. He's one
of seven from outside the paint. It looks painful to
watch him shoot. And this is a guy who has
a guard coming into the NBA, was thought to have
(39:47):
the best, the best looking stroke. It was just they
want him to raise up his shot. Instead, he's screwed
up his shot. Alright, three for three and three. Real
news is let's see if it'll be a clean sweep,
real news or fake news. North Carolina Point Joe Barry
broke his hand after punching a wall after playing a
video game. That's real news and spectacular. Yes it is.
(40:08):
Oh the love and drama of the old video games
coming down up down left right, A B B A right.
Anybody knows about contra, knows how to get those unlimited
lives or the thirty thirty free lives. Um, Look, who
among us hasn't thrown a fit when when you lose
a video game? But like Nukela loose, right, you gotta
learn to not punch with your pitching hand. You gotta
(40:29):
learn to not punch with your shooting hand. This is
game time on the Doug Gotlieb Show, Bunny My Buddies
in Town. He's a doctor and it took him a
long time in med school because he was played minor
league basketball and when he went to medical school, which
just wasn't used to studying that much. And the reason was, like,
you just saw that work ethic when you're a basketball player.
(40:51):
Speaking of basketball players, former NBA commissioner thinks league should
be we legal. I disagree. Tell you why next Boom?
What Up? America? Doug Gottlieb Show Sports Radio from the
City of Angels, I gotta tell you I'm spent with
Dodgers stadium. And this is from an angel fan, Like
I don't actually love the Dodgers. But the Dodgers had
(41:12):
the more iconic uniforms they got, the more iconic hats
they got, the better stadium we got, the better center fielder,
no question. We also have a World Series title, uh
since eighty eight something. The Dodgers don't have a matter
of fact um until the last couple of years. Dominant
in terms of record wise and compared to the Dodgers.
But the Dodgers like, I've been to them all. I've
(41:35):
been the Fenway, I've been Wrigley. I love Wrigley. Something
about Dodgers Stadium where it just feels like a perfectly
created like not everything out of the fifties was awesome,
all right, Like you go back and watch watch AUSI
and Harry You're like, but just like Disneyland, just like
I just like the Disneyland Palm Springs kind of style.
(41:55):
I like the location um l A over Boston any
time new The new Yankee Stadium has way more amenities.
It is stunning. But I don't know, you've got you've
got a history without looking like a historical place, but
you also have newness without looking like it's been completely refurbished.
(42:19):
I don't know, I just hard to It's kind of
like a mid century It's like walking into a mid
century modern, like something about a mid century modern kind
of like it. I'm not sure I want to own
them in century modern, but I definitely like looking at
a mid century model anyway. Weed. Let's talk about weed.
Um and I guess our sensibilities about Weed obviously have
(42:43):
changed as a country, haven't they, Like I remember just
being I just I don't know, like my parents never
smoked weed. It was never around my house, so I
didn't I didn't even know like the smell of marijuana
until maybe maybe late in high school more college, and
(43:04):
it wasn't even my first year wasn't even a year.
Notre Dame is more in between. Notre Dame in Oklahoma
State has spent a year junior college. And my girlfriend
the time went to you see Santa Barbara and some
weed up there, right, Um, So I don't know. I
just I wasn't in the crowd in high school that
smoke weeds around weed. I just I was. I was
(43:26):
in that athlete crowd. But I do know that we
had this completely different sense of what marijuana was ref
madness going back to the sixties and seventies, and it
was thought to be a gateway drug, which to anybody
who says it's a gateway drug, asked, how many people
do you know that have tried marijuana? How many people
then have dropped acid? Or like, just just there's no
(43:48):
correlation between smoke and weed and doing all those things
should be pointed out that weed is stronger now, The
strands are stronger now than they were ten fifteen ty
years ago, and the laws against them are weaker. Now. Um,
we're decriminalizing marijuana if not making legal across the United States.
(44:11):
That's something's gonna happen. And some of it is are
changing sensibilities, and some of it is governments need to
create more revenue. Right, it's the same reason that lotteries
exist in all these states which like no, no no, no,
can't do lottery, can't can't do gambling. Oh, we'll let
you do lotteries because it helps fund schools. Can't do weed.
Wait a second, Colorado made how much off of weed sales?
(44:32):
Nevada has made how much off of weed sales? Okay,
we can do eat um and and and look. Uh.
The NFL, the NBA, Major League Baseball, they're lessening the
punishment for testing positive for marijuana. But I told you
(44:52):
before that the NFL's marijuana policy is not a drug test.
It is very important. Yes, you can get suspended for
smoking testing positive for marijuana. Okay, it's an intelligence test.
You have one weed test in the off season, and
if you pass it, they don't test you the rest
(45:14):
of the year. In other words, you have to be
an idiot to smoke weed before that test. They're not
even saying you can't smoke weed. They're saying, look, if
we told you couldn't smoke weed for this period of
time and you can't do without it, then you one
are dumb and to probably have a problem. The NBA,
(45:37):
uh similarly, has decriminalized marijuana. Guys aren't getting suspended left
and right for marijuana use. David Stern, who of course
put marijuana on the band's substance list back in the nineties,
was on The Uninterrupted with Al Harrington, former NBA player,
and had this to say, I think we gotta change
(45:57):
the collective board agreement and let you do it's legal
in your state. I don't think if marijuana is now
in the process of being legalized, I would think you
should be allowed to do what's legal in your state.
I'm now at the point where personally, I think it
probably should be removed from the band list. I think
there's universal agreement that marijuana for medical purposes should be
(46:19):
completely illegal. I agree for medical purposes like I just do.
Like my dad when he was dying of cancer, I
remember sitting down at the kitchen table like hey, and
my my dad was one of he's like he didn't
even take advil, like hy Man, you're in pain, Like
I said that, why don't you get medical marijuana? And no,
(46:40):
I wasn't thinking, you know, so I could borrow some.
I was thinking it just alleviates pain. I'm all for
even for the NFL. Like, it's much better than using
it for than vike it in or oxy things that
you know, things are much stronger addictive. What are they called?
Uh uh? Opioids? Did devoid? Like a major problem. The
(47:06):
problem with outright legalization is that you're still running a
business and regardless of whether it's legal, to the joe
on the street one, there's a personal self discipline element
to it, but too even more important like remember the NBA,
you have guaranteed contracts. Okay, so let's say you like
(47:28):
smoking weed and you sign a four year guaranteed contract. Now,
do I think that marijuana is highly addictive? No, I
think I think that has some addictive qualities to it.
Smoking is highly addictive. There's other things. Alcohol is highly addictive.
I think it's addictive. I don't think it's the problem
(47:49):
with it is like do you become a pothead and
it's legally just smoke like it's going to hurt your
performance as much as you can say, well you know
that it's performance based business US. You can just no, no, no,
it's not like the NFL. You have If you're having
performance issues. In the NBA, you have performance issues, you've
got a guaranteed contract. What are they supposed to do?
(48:11):
So can you use it to alleviate pain? Yeah, but
I believe in the collective Artment agreement you can get
a doctor's note and have medical marijuana's just like in
the NFL. I'm all for in terms of managing pain.
Should absolutely you should do. You should mirror what what
states have done, which is kind of decriminalizing, right, like
it's frowned upon. We don't want you to do it.
(48:33):
You get a doctor's note, Well let you do it.
You got chronic knee pain, you got chronic back pain,
and this helps. Fine, We're not gonna chase you all over.
On the other hand, we don't want to make it
outright legal because we don't want we don't want dudes
waking and bacon every day and then going to shoot around,
coming home collapse and eating funians, eating Cheetos and just
showing up at work like that's not what we want
(48:55):
in our business. Much like at your place of work,
we could be legal in your state. That doesn't mean
you can show up to work having smoked weed. Well
why not? Gets me through my day? All right? Well,
they're running businesses. This is a collective barn and and
oh yeah, by the way, this is a lot of
This is part of what um the NFL is going
(49:18):
to do, the NBA is gonna do, which is probably
ultimately they'll relent and either severely severely limit the punishment
for weed, a severely severely limit the punishment for weed,
or maybe make it completely legal, but there's gonna be
some giftback in return. That's part of a collective barn
group music. Do you think we should be outright legal
(49:40):
in for for professional sports? Yeah? I do. I think
it should be on par with alcohol. I just for me,
I don't see much of a difference between. Like, it's
obviously something that you can't As you said, it can't
be treated as if you could just wake up and
get high or show up and go to practice or
do whatever you want. Ont but a responsible adult should
(50:02):
be given the opportunity to where like you don't just
wake up and start having mimosas the morning of a
game day with your eggs. Like, it's the same sort
of responsibility to be put on the athlete to not
drink day of the game or get wasted the night
before the game as it is to then responsibly use
marijuana as pain tolerance or to help them sleep or
(50:23):
whatever they think they need it for. I just I
just think it's a slippery slope once you completely legalize it,
because you're you're not bringing it back, you know, Ramos,
what about you? I would say, no, do not. I'm
not a big fan of drugs, any type of drugs
like that, so I would say no. I think the
way you talked about it medical type stuff, but not
(50:43):
just for just daily use. So we did have prohibition.
We tried to stop the use of of you know, alcohol,
and that really didn't work very well. But maybe that
was in the twenties so it was kind of a
different time. No, it didn't work. Again, I'm not I'm
not saying make it illegal. I'm not saying I'm I'm
just simply saying you you make it well. I mean,
we make it kind of illegal, but not not really
chase him down and punish him. Nearly severely. I mean
(51:06):
part of it. Part of it is it's really simple
to me, like if you have chronic pain, you got
to use it, have a doctor's note, and most people
know you can get a doctor note pretty easily. But
the idea of like, hey, we get done play and
let's just all kind of light up like Johnny unitis
grill and a cigarette, but back in the nineteen fifties,
Like I just I don't think that's the image of
(51:28):
any professional sports league that you want to have, regardless
of whether or not that's the reality to it. So
I think some of this is kind of how it
looks right. And we also have to remember that the
big reason that states are legalizing marijuana is not because
our sensibilities have changed as much as because they can
make money off. But I I do think he's mirror
(51:49):
society and decriminalize it. But I think you gotta be
smart about it, not make it outright legal instead, not
be as punishable, and have the same type of weed
tests that you have in the NFL, where it's not
really a drug test, it's more an i Q test.
That's how you find out if somebody's addictive or somebody's
a complete clown. Is you have a test and if
you fail that test, you're in the program. If you
don't fail that test, whatever, dude, we'll test you next year.
(52:12):
That's they do in the NFL. That's what they should
do in the NBA. We'll ask you from Salami's a
thirteen year veteran plus a pothead kidding, kidding, he only
played twelve years in the NFL. Uh, he'll join us.
I also want to ask him about can't like what's
up with Cam Newton now he's walking out of another
press conference that's up coming next. But first, would you

a metric ton of things to get to. I was
talking about the drug testing policy in the NFL and
they're just talking the NBA, like, hey, you gotta legalize weed,
(54:20):
and I was like, no, you don't. You just have
to copy the NFL's policy where they test you some
time before the season and it's more of an i
Q and addiction test than it is than it is
actually a drug test, right, because if you pass it,
you're good. They don't test you for street drugs the
rest of the the year. Right. It's one time sometime usually
during or before training camp. Everybody knows when it's coming.
(54:42):
So if you fail that test, then you have a problem.
If the bottom line is, if you're not that intelligent
and you have a problem, and when those two things
go together, disastrous things happen. So if you can't stop smoking?
We for a month? Yeah? How long this? Honestly somebody
(55:04):
can How long does somebody have to stop smoking for?
It's completely out of your that I don't know. There's
a big like you know, I know weed guys like, oh,
I gotta do is drink that gold sealed t right,
golden seal And but what happens is if you start
doing that, then you dilute your your sample. Right, But
then you have to you have to drink the stuff
that you dilute yourself from, right, or I'm not just
(55:26):
stop one month? Just one month? Smoke weed? Weed free
for one month? Is that that's a reasonable requestion, It's
beyond reasonable And like like you said, if you can't
do that, then it's a bigger issue. You may need
some help period from salam joining us in the Dug
Gotlip Show, What's up with your boy? Cam Newton Man
(55:47):
didn't didn't play well? And then this happened earlier today
at a press conference. Take a listen, big plays plays
kind get to that energy. I think that you're talking
about this offense, said, I know you had had several
at Detroit in New England. Do you think you guys
have the wherewithal to do that consistently weekend and weekend.
(56:10):
Next question probably did you know what I like? In
cam Newton to a model? Back in my younger days,
I said, hey, look I'm I've made it. I've arrived
this this idiotic I was, I'm only dating models, right,
(56:32):
So it's been a whole year you want to be
you want to be basically what Leo has been his
entire Like, I'm like, look, I have some success and
you know, been to the super Bowl, so on and
so forth. So I was like, I think it was
around my third fourth year whatever, I'm like, look, I'm
only dating miles, right, which sounds good in theory if
you can pull that off. I was planning in Atlanta,
not a hot bed for models, but beautiful women, yes,
(56:55):
and there were some models, some print models. Instagram model. No,
it was no Instagram I understand, but like an Instagram
model now technically as a model, but really by some
people's estimation, there's they're they're operating in an Instagram so
it doesn't count. Okay, So so Instagram model is to
(57:16):
modeling what chiropractors are. Two doctors. I can't talk bad
about chiropractical chiropractics been saving my life column. But look,
so the great thing about beating model is they're super
confident when they're around normal people and they're beautiful. And
(57:37):
at the same time, one of the negatives I found
this is a personal experience. They're very insecure around other
beautiful people. Really so when you go to another function
dates though they don't need anything. When you go to
another function, whether other models or other actresses or singers,
they get real self conscious. Oh my gosh, she's prettier
than me. Uh, oh my god. I can't deal with this,
(57:59):
and they freeze up. So with Cam Newton, when things
are going great, when he's out there being superman and
a man amongst boys, he got you get him in
the press conference, he's doing this thing. He has a
snaz he hat on. He's very likable. But when things
go wrong and you put him in a situation where
(58:19):
now he doesn't feel as confident as before, then he
doesn't know how to act. He freezes up, throws a
temper tantrum, and likens himself to it to a child.
At no point, as a starting quarterback in the National
Football League, should you walk out of a press conference
(58:42):
because you don't like the questions. It's a way about
being professional and he has it sometimes, but when things
go wrong, we've seen it throughout his career. It's a
train wreck and he just doesn't get it yet. He can't,
he can't comprehend it. What's the why as a player? Um,
(59:02):
I think he's been good for so long, like ever,
like when Cam Newton was a kid and he stepped
on the football better than everybody else. He's just better
than everyone. So when you have when you have players
like that, Vince Young was like that when when he
was coming up and and and used it right. Uh.
His his cousin used to be my barber, and he
used to talk about how he was just better than
(59:24):
everybody all the time. You get there's a little fundamentals
that different you do. You get coached that you're the
best player forever. Then you get coach different, You get
to do things that other guys don't do. You don't
have to have the same responsibility as other guys. But
once you get to a higher level, once you get
to the highest level, then you have to be held
accountable for everything you do, the good and the bad,
(59:47):
and some guys just can't. So with Vince Young. He
just couldn't take it, couldn't take the criticism. Why is
everybody talking about me? I I'm me, you know, and
Cam coming off an m VP here and it's been on,
you know, downhill after that. He just hasn't made the
adjustment in terms of working on the things he needs
(01:00:09):
to work on to be consistent and get better. You
mentioned Atlanta. The Atlanta Falcons had to change coordinators because
their coordinator left and got a head coaching job in
San Francisco. They're bringing Steve Sarkisian and they become the
first team that can score against the Patriots defense. Like
everybody was scoring against Patriots except the Atlanta Falcons on
(01:00:29):
Sunday night, And like, well it was in Foxboro. They
already lost twice in Foxboro and almost the third time,
and they didn't have two of their cornerbacks. So I mean,
is this do we put it all on Stark or
or I mean, how did how did this happen? When
I was watching that game, the first thing that came
to mind is, wow, does play calling off right? And
(01:00:51):
as a as a quarterback and met Ryan as a
quarterback m v P. When you get a new offensive
coordinator in then you don't want to freestyle of freelance.
You want to run his place, right he calls you.
You want to run his plays. You want to do
the things that he's been working on. You guys been practicing.
So you don't have that leeway you would if you're
(01:01:12):
with someone for a long time and they trust you
to go out there and call your own plays and
do your own thing. So I'm watching this game plan
and I'm like, wow, this is uh, this is unlike
the Atlanta Falcons right in terms of outside weapons, slot weapons,
running back side of the back field. They just were
very stagnant, very uncreative with the play calls and the designs.
(01:01:38):
Multiple three and outs, and anyone knows if you go
up to UH, if you plan on winning against New England,
no matter where you play them, you must continue to
extend drive. You have to. And the fact that some
of the play calling, some of the four some of
the routes they were I was like, and I'm an
offensive lineman, so but I'm looking at the totality of
(01:02:00):
the game and I'm like, they got to be more
creative than this, right, you got Julio Jones. It doesn't
matter who's guarding Julio Jones. We saw that on the
one touchdown they scored. He literally just took the ball.
He just took it like I'm look, we're both have
our hands on the ball. I'm better than you. I'm
taking the ball. He easily made the greatest catch in
the history of the Super Bowl that should have essentially
(01:02:21):
ended the Super Bowl. At their previous offense, creator is
a better play caller, just decided to run the football exactly. Okay, sometimes,
so I guess here's here's the other questions, like haven't
you seen enough to pull the pull the pull the trigger,
like right, yeah, But it's all about disruption as well.
So they're not We're worried about disrupting an offense that's
not operating well anyway, what's the purpose of continuing on
(01:02:42):
because they're not one in six or seven, you know
what I mean, they've had some success. So you don't
want to make a drastic change like that unless you
have someone in mind that you know can come in
right now and make it happen. And I don't know
if they have that. I really don't know if they
have that. And you know, you're in a division that
(01:03:05):
you can still win. So do you wanna blow everything
up right now in the middle, at the midway point
in the season, or do you want to have a
conversation with Steve Sarkijan and be like, yo, look, this
is something that has to change. Even Salon joining us
in studio here, I want to ask you about the
Seattle Seahawks. They had a little sideline dust up. Uh.
(01:03:27):
You and I both know that dust ups happen in
practice in games at times, but it does to me.
It feels like there's something more there with Seattle. Feels
like there's something more to Pittsburgh, and yet there are
two teams that could well reach the Super I want
to get to that moment. First's bringing Dan Buyer. We
have the World Series ahead of us, Dandy and NBA
action ahead of us. Stand what are you working on?
Game two? Astros and Dodgers Tonight from Dodgers Stadium, covered
(01:03:50):
starts at seven the Eastern time on Fox. Justin Verlander
on the hill for the Astros. So that means the
Dodgers making a few changes to their lineup. Jack Peterson
plays a lift to night and bat six. Chase Utley
is gonna man second base, for l A and Bat eight.
Dodgers put rich Hill on the mountains. They are up
one oh in the best of seven series. Red Sex
second Basement. Dustin Pedroia is gonna miss seven months of action.
(01:04:11):
He's gonna have knee surgery, which could carve out a
portion of the twenty eight teen season that he wouldn't
be available. Bronze rookie quarterback to Shaun Kaiser going to
get the starting Week eight in London against the Vikings.
Kaiser started at all but one game this season, but
was bench during a game for the second time this
season last week against Tennessee and then the results. So
the video of Kaiser out at a bar late Friday
(01:04:32):
into early Saturday. Kaiser today apologize for his action. When
you become a centerpiece of a distraction for a week,
it definitely is is you know, very frustrating on my part.
You know, that's that's not who I am. My mother
wouldn't be proud of this, and um, you know that's
that's pretty much the biggest takeaways. Do whatever you can
to make sure you're not a distraction. I got one
other NFL note, guys, but I want to pass along
(01:04:52):
this from the NBA cast guard Dwayne Wade not gonna
play to night against the Nets because of a knee contusion.
Marquelle Fold's gonna miss the next three games for the
City Serious because of his shoulder issue is broke, and
the Steelers if told wide receiver Martavis Bryant he'll be
an active Sunday at Detroit. He took scout team reps
in practice today. Change his jersey. They made him change
(01:05:12):
his jersey. Oh, they may they make you change his jersey.
That that is. That's just thanks. Dan dam Buyer uh
standing bio join us in a moment as well. Expected
to get Brandon Morrow from the Dodgers here before the
end of the hour. E from Saloon continues to join us.
That's in basketball, um man. They do that when you're
on the first team and they make you flip over
your shirt. In the NFL, they put you on scout team.
(01:05:34):
You don't want to do that because they'll never use you.
They'll never use a starter for scout team reps. I
remember we did get active this week, but we we
didn't eat. We didn't have enough lineman do scout team.
And I was like, you know, I text him, absolutely
not absolutely not We'll get one of the tight ends
or something to get down in there and play tackle.
(01:05:56):
Or you'd say no, I would, I would. I've volunteer
to do it before, and they were like, no, no,
they don't do that. You don't. That would be the
worst thing about this. This is this is their way
of This is the way you do instead of trading him,
which is what he wants. This is the way like
no, no no, no, you're staying and you can be on
scout team. The first thing they'll do is they're going
(01:06:18):
to devalue him. And the number one way you devalue
a player in the NFL is don't allow them to play,
because now everybody, why would you devalue a guy that
you might want to trade, Um, obviously there are no takers,
right because and and and look it maybe but then
(01:06:39):
they wouldn't even use him a scout team like that
because they wouldn't want them to get hurt. Right, So,
if you're gonna trade a guy, you just put a
guy on the shelf, all right. Um, But if you
want to devalue a guy, this is a guy you
can't trade that you don't want to give any money to,
So you don't let people see what he has. So
when people ask you what what happened and so on
the soul for they just be like, well, it just
(01:07:01):
didn't work out because of this, this and this and this,
and whatever you say they'll take. They'll take your word
for it as a GM or as a coach, and
it's up to that player somewhere else to dig himself
out of the hole that was created. Like, I don't
know what the problem is there, but it's obviously a problem.
And you know, Mike Tomlin isn't one for for mincing
(01:07:21):
words or anything like that. So look, you'll find I mean,
obviously he won't be there moving forward. I don't know
if it will be this year. Are are are? We
know for sure next year? But something's not clicking and
they're just not on the same page. Okay. So I
look at them and like they're winning, and they finally
finally figured out that we give Levy on the belt
(01:07:44):
le On Bell the ball thirty five times, we're gonna
win more. We got action, yea. Now, Uh do you
think that the reason they didn't give Levyan Bell the
ball earlier was to punish him for holding out? Uh? Yes,
that could be a part of it. And also um
they wanted to give been more touches. As we heard
at the beginning of at the end of last season,
(01:08:07):
all of this, all season he was thinking about retirement.
So what do you do when you're your franchise quarterback
comes back? You let him throw the ball. But he
was throwing the ball. You don't. No one should throw
the ball fifty times in a game unless you're down
four touchdowns to start the game. You just have to
write that should never happen. So you should never throw
(01:08:28):
the ball fifty times. Okay, but he's It just feels
like Ben wants to throw the ball more. But and
they don't work like that. But I know, and they
got Antonio Brown. He's still getting his catches. But nobody
else seems to be happy now le beyond and now
even I was not gonna be happy the n YE
unless he gets a huge contract. It look it feels
like they're gonna get all the I I like, say,
juice out of the orange. You some people they just
(01:08:48):
or like a lemon that you just some people when
they get Here's what irritates me when people put lemons
in their drinks. Right when they just give you the
little not the wedge, the circle thing with your circle.
What's the point You don't get need the actual citrus
in your drink, right, Like I want to squeeze it
and then squeeze it again. I want all of the
lemon juice. So I like lemon wedges, and I like
to squeeze them as many times I can before I
(01:09:10):
drop it in, drop it into the ice. T I
have something to tell you. I shouldn't tell you what,
but I'm gonna tell you anyway. So I used to
do that all the time. I'll get water with a
lemon in it. And those lemon wedges come from the bar, right,
And it was a study done that they're disgusting. They're
(01:09:32):
really bad. It was like fecal matter found on I'm sorry,
but I consider you a friend. My point was merely.
The point was, but I can't you can't tell me
something and and me just turn a blind eye to it.
I'm sorry from salam joining us him telling me that
(01:09:53):
I've basically been drinking fecal matter for years because of
my request for for lemon wedges. My point the simply,
it feels like the Steelers are trying to get all
of the juice out of the proverbial lemon, and yes
there's probably some fecal matter. Knowing that this probably is
Ben's last year, they're gonna have to figure out the
lavy On thing. The the the natives are unhappy, they
(01:10:15):
are they are restless, and so they're gonna have to
figure it out. But they're gonna get as much out
of it this year as they can. I believe so.
And we know Mike Tomlin's not going anywhere. They don't ever,
so he's only the third coach ever, he ain't going.
So um, you got a quarterback who's teetering on retirement,
who tells you in the middle of the year that
he doesn't have it anymore. You have a running back
who held out, who's unhappy, who's not getting the touches
(01:10:37):
that he needs, uh that he wants at the beginning
of the year. So you come back, You take the
pressure off Ben, You run the ball. Oh my god,
they start winning. Hey, I guess we still do have it.
And I think that's the situation where the Steelers have
always been a run the ball, defensive football team, period,
(01:10:57):
no matter who. They have a quarterback Tommy Matt. They
went through a Areo with Timmy Maddox where they threw
the ball a ton that didn't work the first short period,
time did not work long period. What about the Seahawks.
Um again, I'm I'm okay. Like, there's never a team
that I've been on that there wasn't a fighting practice,
absolutely right, and there's not. And they're never a team
that I've been on to which which guy gets taken
(01:11:18):
out of game, he doesn't look cross eyes at the
coach like that that happens. But it feels like there's
more of this now with Yeah, like they let dudes play,
they let dudes talk, but offense versus defense, offense not
getting along, line, not blocking. Can they win in spite
of this dysfunction? Uh? They can win because they have
(01:11:39):
championship caliber players who have been through it and all
of this in fighting. It's because it's a team who's
very outspoken. They have the floor to be outspoken. The
coaches and owners have let it be known. They look,
we're with our players. They can they can disagree, they
can fight. They've done all of this and they've continued
(01:11:59):
to win. So I don't see anything changing, Like you said,
like I've always any team I've ever been on has
been some type of stuff up at practice of training
camp on the sidelines. You know, sometimes I get piste
off at the defense, they get piste off at us,
and you know you fight, But that doesn't detract from
the fact that you're trying to win football games. From Salami,
(01:12:19):
you can hear on weekends here on Fox Sports. Right
of course here every week is he joins us for
two segments to which you learn more about football than
you can most any other time the day on any
other radio station. A great stuff as always, Uh that
brought you by True Car. Find out what other people
in the area pay for the same car you're looking for,
new or used. Visit True Car. Enjoy more confident car
buying experience. All right, Well, what's what's the pressure like
(01:12:40):
to pick the ball up from Clayton Kershaw and have
to get three outs and hand it to Kenley Jansen?
Find out is the guy who did that last night
joins us. Next, don't let the name fool you. Dollar
Shave Club has way more than just razors. Try their
first month starter set with travel size shavee, butter body cleanser,

After that replacement cartridge ship for just a few bucks
(01:13:01):
a month, Get yours a dollar shaved club dot Com,
Slash Gottlieb, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Um, look,
Kershaw has moan um down last night. But you had to.
I don't know the things that go through your mind
is okay, here we go with the seventh inning. Right,
here we go with the seventh inning, and of course
he gives up a single to start the seventh inning.
(01:13:24):
Couldn't turn two on the first ground ball. Second groundball
goes right to Corey Siger, and you're like, all right,
here we go. That's too and Corey Singer bobbles it
trying to h but and does end up. Who is
the lead runner there? I'm gonna say it was Um,
I think it was L two bay they got it second.
(01:13:47):
I'll so I'm I'll double check it. But I thought
it was EL two where they got a second. But
the point is, when you should get out of an
inning and you don't get avan inning, sometimes that throws
pictures off, right, I mean throws everybody off. It's it's
a lot like when you expect you got two strikes.
It's like a two two count, right, and and you
painted on black and you think the umpire is gonna
(01:14:09):
pull the string and he doesn't. And now the very
next pitch on three two, guy hits a home run.
So I'm watching the seventh and I see Corey Seger
bobbled a ball that should have been a sure fired
doubt play. I'm like, oh man, here we go again. Right.
I feel bad for Kershaw. He's been pitching just incredible
baseball and one little error that that they still got
(01:14:34):
the lead runner but should have gotten two gotten mouth
the inning extends a inning instead, of course, he gets
out of the seventh, and then they decide, even though
we only gave up three hits to go to the bullpen,
we'll go to that same bullpen. Welcome in Brandonmorrow, who
got the hold. Uh. Ten pitches, seven strikes, couple of
snares to left field. Uh that key k went and
(01:14:55):
caught and he joins us. Now in the Doug gottlip
Show on Fox Sports Radio, Brandan, how are you how good?
Thanks for having me? Okay, seventh inning, you're watching and
you know how baseball works, right, like when especially starting pitchers,
those guys are curious creatures. It feels like that Kershaw
is finally going to get out of the seventh and
Corey bobbles that ball at short trying to turn double play.
(01:15:15):
What were you thinking? Um? You know, I was already
tossing a little bit at the time, so I didn't see, um,
the player exactly what happened. So I was just trying
to you know, focus in on the time. But you know,
knowing curse, he's not gonna let that affect him. He's
he's was dialed in all game, and was you know,
obviously continued to be dominant after that, and then you know,
(01:15:38):
eighty three pitches they decided to go to you. Was
it was it planned out previously? Was it? The you know,
the seventh inning stretches long, and then of course the
bottom of the seventh was long, and so you worry
about tighten up the back. Take me through what happened
to allow you to come in in that eighth inning? Well,
I mean, there's no conversation with me about it. We're
we're down there ready to go when the phone rings. Um,
(01:16:01):
but I knew I was coming in because you can
see on TV. Uh, they were congratulating, cursing in the dugout,
and I had already been tossing, so it was a
pretty good chance that I was going to be in
for the next So I knew. I knew right away
as far as that's concerned, I mean as far as
game planning and stuff. Now, they don't they don't let
us know ahead of time that hey, you're gonna go
into eight or or whatever. All right, so you're out
(01:16:22):
there and like, look, this is every kid's dream, right
world series. Plus you have you have a lead. It's
not like a one run lead. It's not like you
come in when the house is on fire. It's a
three to one lead. But you have a very very
dangerous lineup and you're pitching, I believe, against the middle
of the lineup. What's it like just when you're warming up,
trying to get three outs, trying to get to Kenley? Um? Sure, yeah,
(01:16:42):
you know you're you're trying to you know, dial it
in down there. And and for me, I'm trying to
get loose without um, you know, building up too much anxiety. Um,
you know, trying to keep my heart right down. And
that's what I'm trying to been doing the whole postseason.
You know, it's my first time in the playoffs, and
obviously I thought a lot about it in the past,
and just trying to keep those emotions under control and
(01:17:03):
and just remembering that, you know, obviously a two run
leads a lot better than one run lead, and you
can go out and attack guys, and if you give
up a you know, solo home run, um you're still
gonna be okay. So which you can't do is, you know,
give guys three bases and um, you know, our bullpen
has done an unbelievable job of that all postseason, of
(01:17:24):
limiting walks and obviously limiting damage, and um, you know
everybody's done a great job of that. Brand tomorrow joining
us in the dug outlicsho. Yeah, that's the what like,
that's the worst, right when the when, the when, the
when the middle reliever comes in and walks the first
batter after the starter was pitching a gem, everybody goes, ah,
there we go. Um, And but I will tell you this,
having been at the game and watched your reaction when
(01:17:47):
Gonzalez flied out to left field. Keik had to make
he made it, He had to make up. He had
to make a good run to catch it. I mean
it was it wasn't I mean, it was a snare.
It was you know, it wasn't hit hard or anything. UM.
But when he catches the ball, like there was both
of those balls that were hit to left, you didn't
kind of react. You were just you were very business like.
Is there a thought process that goes through your mind
in order to not overreact and to go to go
(01:18:09):
yes on the catch or is that just how you
normally are? Well, I think that's normally how I am.
But but yeah, especially you know at this point, you're
not You're not going to be relieved to just get
one out. You know, I'm out there to get three.
And obviously the first out is huge. That takes a
lot of pressure off you. UM and Keiki coming in
and making a good play on that on a on
(01:18:30):
a ball that was probably tough to read, a ball
that could have you know, easily fallen in UM and
to get the first out takes a lot of pressure
on you. Continue you can continue to be aggressive after that,
UM And like we said, like you don't want to,
you don't want to give those guys a chance. You
don't want to you want to start the energy and
they're dug out giving them, you know, especially the leadoff
guy on but In Moorrow joining us in the Doug
(01:18:50):
Gottlieb Show. Um, you can tweet at j d r F.

(01:19:13):
group of people that have have fought through this. Uh,
it feels like it's it's an even greater accomplishment, isn't
it to to do do as well as you did
last night carrying this Uh? I don't know, you want
to say burden, but carrying the banner of type one diabetes. Sure? Yeah,
I mean, it's it's an honor for you know, people
to look up to you and and to be that
(01:19:34):
role model for for kids and parents with with diabetes,
and especially when you're going out there and having success
and and you know, showing them that you can still
achieve your dreams with you know, with diabetes. It's not
a death sentence and and you know you can do
whatever you want. By the way, I always I get caught.
I get confused between the Walter Brimley diabetes and the
(01:19:57):
normal diabetes thing. Right, did they did they tell you
what's the proper pronunciation? I go with diabetes, but I
like I like the diabetes too. I think that's I
just think it's a funny way to pronounce it. Everything
you thought you hoped and dreamed World Series would be like, yeah, yeah,
I mean it's it's an incredible experience. And you know,
(01:20:18):
I owe the Dodgers a lot for believing me and
bring me in and and spring training and allowing me
to compete for a job and make my way up
and continue to you know, have success up here and
um continue, you know, to have them put me in
situations to have success and um yeah, I mean it's
been it's been a dream come true. Of course. Listen,
the best thing about your success is it's earned, right,
(01:20:40):
it's earned. And that's why you got out there last night,
and that's why we'll probably see you tonight if it's
close and you get that opportunity. Wish you the best
of luck and thanks so much for joining us on
Fox Sports Radio. Yeah, I hope so, thank you, all right,
I spend a morrow joining us at tomorrow three is
the Twitter account and uh, of course huge Golden State
Warriors fan as well. But yeah, you're what you're saying there, right? Okay?
(01:21:06):
Sorry Ramos? Do you like do you like the idea
of taking him out and putting Kenley? And my my
whole thought is like, I want them to not see
Kenley and you got a two run lead, and Kenley
can come in and get two outs anytime. I mean
it was one, two, three, so I guess it doesn't matter.
I just wondered your thoughts. Yeah, I kind of didn't
even think about that till you brought it up. It's
a it's a really good point, though. I think they
(01:21:27):
just wanted to get the win down and put Jansen
out there, and yet people feel comfortable with him out there.
On Did somebody just make garlic fries in here? What
is that? Like? One of the things I think I think,
uh was it peck Bell or a T and T
whatever they call Giants Stadium now with the San Fra
Stil Giants, I think they brought garlic fries in the
Major League Baseball of course, Dodger Stadium. As to garlic fries,
(01:21:48):
and they smell unbelievable. Somebody has garlic fries or something
garlic in the studio. What don't you guys eating something? No,
but I do that. Nikki six, Nikki six just walked
by his Nikki six, the one eating garlic fries. Point.
Maybe he had garlic price of the game last night
and he still smells like the garlic prize of last night.
That's the one thing. Matt Holiday Next hour, John Paul
Morosy Next hour, we'll talk with j p about tonight's
(01:22:11):
epic pitching matchup next to the Doug Otlip Show. Fox
Sport Radio. What Up Stuck Out Live show, Fox Sports Radio,
coming to you from Los Angeles. M m well, we're
getting ready for Game two of the World Series A series.
(01:22:32):
And like any other astros, yesterdro in the American League.
Justin Verlander. No, he doesn't pitch for the Tigers anymore,
taking on the Dodgers led by Rich Hill. You know,
the guy that always has the blisters, but had the
outstanding season last year, not the outstanding postseason last year.
Cool Rich Hill? Justin Verlander and um some new Dodgers,
(01:22:52):
some old dudes playing, Like, dude, you you went with
who at second base? They went old at second base? Um.
And it's still a hot, sunny, beautiful in California. Not
as hot as it was yesterday. On the other hand,
that like, look, this is something I shared with you yesterday.
It was very hot. It's a hundred degrees at at
the time of first pitch. But baseball is a summer sport,
(01:23:15):
so it's not like it's a weather pattern that guys
aren't used to playing it. Whereas when you're playing in
Los Angeles or playing in the Dome in Houston, if
you're playing in New York or Chicago or Cleveland or
Minnesota this time of year, and and all of a sudden,
you gotta go to your mouth to you know, to
blow the warm up your fingers so you can feel
them before you throw a curveball or before you throw
(01:23:37):
a two seamer. Uh, that's different than how you normally play.
But as is normally the case in baseball in two
thousand and seventeen, we had a lot of strikeouts. We
had three home runs, not a lot of walks last night,
And unlike other games, it didn't take a lot of
time two hours, twenty eight minutes Kershaw tomorrow, who just
(01:23:59):
joined us to Kenley Jansen goodnight, drive home safely, so
a lot to get to And uh, I could be crazy,
but I kind of feel like if you don't think
the Astros are a a sizeable favorite tonight like as
good as um Clayton Kershaw has been with a cup
(01:24:24):
with like one year as the exception, as in't justin
Verlinda been just as good And they wouldn't even have
Verlander if not for the fact that the Baltimore Orioles
decided to not trade Zach Brittain so they wanted to
go out and add and maybe they went out to
go out to Verlinda anyway in the waiver wire deal.
(01:24:46):
Let's ask John Paul Morossi, Fox Baseball Insider he joins
us on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Um, it feels like
that like as much as last night was a Kershaw
at night and Kershaw did not disappoint the nights of
Verlander Knight, Right, Douga, you make a lot of great points,
and uh, and how about that trade? Then when you
unpack the reasons why it happened, why he's a Houston Astro.
(01:25:08):
Here's one more, uh. The Astros GM Jeff Luneau told
me about a month ago that the Astros did not
seriously pursue Verlander in the month of July, when, of course,
as you mentioned, they were considering Zach Britain as well.
But one of the biggest reasons why was that verte
Lander had a different team that he would have rather
gone to in a trade, and that team was the
(01:25:31):
Los Angeles Dodgers because he and his fiance kd up
in the own a house in southern California and that
would have been great for him personally and professionally as
well to pitch for that team. So the Astros knew
that for much of July and probably well into August
as well, vert Lander was not really of the mind
to approve a trade to Houston because he wanted to
pitch either for the Dodgers with the Cubs. And it
(01:25:53):
wasn't until the final hour before the midnight deadline on
August thirty one, the night of that that evening, that
Verlander made that final decision that Okay, I've been told
by the Tigers. Now the Dodger possibility is nowhere. The
Cups possibility not gonna happen either. If you're gonna go somewhere,
the place for you to go, the only places you
(01:26:14):
can go and try to win a World Series this
year is Houston. If you stay, you're gonna probably be
part of a rebuilding effort for a period of time,
unless we can find a place to trade you in
the off season. So, Douga, was a number of circumstances
that led the Astros and Tigers to that deal, one
of which, I think, on a rather somber note, is
the fact that it was not until really the last
(01:26:35):
several days before August thirty one. Of course, Hurricane Harvey
at hit Houston that week, and Jeff Luneau told me
that when he and Jim Crane talked about the decision
and adding the paerrol that they did, they said, as
part of those conversations, the city needs this, Our team
needs this to help lift the spirits of the team
and more importantly of the city, to bring in an
(01:26:56):
ace for the playoffs and help our team. So so, really,
Doug on a number of lots that you're right, Britain
was part of it. There are so many factors there
that have been the reason why Justin Verlander starts Game
two for the Astros against the Dodgers and not the
other way around. Now, if there's a downside to Verlander,
there's not many. I mean, he's up in In in
(01:27:16):
two thousand and seventeen. He strikes out, he strikes out
a lot of guys. Right, it's about strikeouts, it's about
not walking guys, not given away. But it's also about
the home run and give up thirty last year, gave
up twenty seven combined this year. And of course it
is the Dodger team that scored all their runs last
night on the home run ball. We don't have a
ton of stats to go against because he's been with
(01:27:38):
the Tigers his entire career. But how do you think
the Dodgers match up against Verlander? I think overall, Doug,
it's it is a good matchup for Verlander going against
l A. And we talked about the home runs. He
has only given up one home run in twenty four
and two thirds innings this postseason, and that actually came
in relief to Andrew benn in ten in Game four
(01:28:00):
of the first Round against the Red Sox. So as
a starter, zero home runs allowed for Verlander in these playoffs,
which is an encouraging sign for for Houston. And also,
he's so well prepared. I've had multiple catchers tell me
Doug that his conversations before the game is game planning
is as precise as any picture in the game. He
(01:28:21):
is as prepared as anybody on the mound that we
have in the major leagues. Right now, He'll be ready
h And also importantly, the Dodgers are now going to
look at a very different picture than the one they
faced in Game one. They faced in Dallas kaikel Um
He's not really a command or finesse lefty, but he
doesn't throw either. So they face a lefty that moves
(01:28:42):
the ball well and manipulates the ball around the zone
a lot. Uh and you go from facing him to Verlander,
who can still throw in the high nineties from the
right side. It's a very different look for the Astros hitters.
They will now be facing a lefty for the second
strade game. And while Hill is a bit different than Kershaw,
he's still a lefty, and so I think they now
(01:29:02):
have a bit of a routine facing the same lefty
arm slat if you will deal on different type of
a picture, but same concept, if you will, and they're
doing it, Doug, with the same hitters, same it or
same order as they had in Game one. There were
some calls for a j Is to drop George Springer
in the lineup. He is not going to do that.
Springer continues in the lead off spot. So I think
(01:29:23):
it's the same look against the same handed picture, if
you will, which I think does feed into the Astros
advantage a bit here at the enter Game two. Okay,
which rich Hill, it's all about those hats. Need those bats,
need hats, right, because it's all about the curveball. They
can't be scared of the curveball. And the numbers at
home for rich Hill are spectacular. Two point seven seven
e r A. Hitters hit just one seventy nine against
(01:29:46):
him at Dodger Stadium. And if his hand is blister free,
he's able to throw that ridiculous curveball at will. How
did the Astros hit the curveball? Well, that's a great question, Doug,
and that is I think the seminal question of of
this evening because you look at the Astros on the
road in these playoffs, uh, they have average. I think
it's two point three runs per game. Offensively, they are
(01:30:06):
one in five away from home in these playoffs compared
to six and oh in Houston. So it's been a
very stark contrast for their bats on the road. Um
and with Hill. It's interesting. I think the last night
on on some level, they were maybe a bit too passive.
They let Kershaw phillip the zone early and then it
was a lot of oh in two and one and
two counts, and you're not gonna win against Kershaw when
(01:30:27):
you've got in two and one and two and so here,
I think it's a matter of you know the curveballs coming, uh,
and you may be able to prepare for it. Hill
doesn't throw quite as hard as Kershaw does, so perhaps
it allows you to then game plan for that. Look
off speed, look for the curveball, and you still have
more time to react to the fastball and if in
(01:30:48):
fact that that that is what you're gonna get. So
I think it's an interesting question, Doug, and I think
you're you're really hitting on it. It is the strength
of the curveball. Is Hill in the zone? Is he missing?
He was very good in Game two against the Cubs.
He's been in general I think very much on point
in these playoffs. So um, it's really to me one
of the great questions of this game. How do the
(01:31:09):
Astros bats handle Hill. They'll have a very right handed,
dominant lineup up there. It really I think it starts
with quality at bass from Springer. They need Springer. I
mentioned him. I think it's the right move to keep
him in the leadoff spot. But this is really a
big game for Springer. If he does not produce batting
leadoff against the lefty tonight and game too, maybe a
(01:31:29):
Game three at home would be the time to consider
dropping in the line up just a little bit. Tom
Paul Morosi, baseball insider for Fox Sports, joining us on
the Doug Gottlieb Show. Are we are we now done
with the Kershaw can't pitch in the postseason narrative? Just
one start in the World Series expectacular start? Does that
eliminate that narrative? It does? And actually, Doug, I would
tell you that the the overall postseason narrative for Kershaw
(01:31:52):
should have died a long time ago. It baffles me
the criticism he was still taking even before last night's game, because,
including last night, the Dodgers in his last nine postseason
starts are eight and one, so this is not a
postseason flopper by any stretch of the imagination. He turned
(01:32:13):
around that narrative back in with his performance against the
Mets against a face elimination Game four, So to me,
he has he He really explained that a long time ago,
and right now, Doug, he actually has the second most
quality starts of any picture in the playoffs. Um pressure
tonight on the Astros are pressure on the Dodgers, And
by that I mean, look, the Astros have been unbeatable
(01:32:34):
at home. So does the pressure now move to the
Dodgers to to win yet again? I mean last time
was on Kershaw to prove he's not bad in the
postseason he can handle. The pressure just doesn't feel like
that remains still on the Dodgers. I would say this
that the pressure Doug certainly is for both teams and
still is going to persist as along as the series
is going. But I think there's more of it right
now for the Astros because they have to prove here
(01:32:57):
at some point in time they can win on the road.
If they don't win at least one game on the road,
the Dodgers win this series. Clearly, that's what home the
home build advantage means. So with Rolander on the mound,
you've got to think, if you're gonna win one game
at Dodger Stadium, this is your game. You've got Verlander
on the mound, this is your best chance to do it. Now.
You can still come back and obviously do it in
(01:33:18):
Game six with Verlander on the mound, but you would
love for that to be clinching a World Series and
not just hoping to get to a Game seven. So
I think tonight for that reason, uh still more pressure
on Houston. They are down in the series, but you
can see very easily this is why we shouldn't overreact
to one game in the series. If Houston wins this game,
the Dodgers all of a sudden are going to a
(01:33:39):
place where the Astros have not lost at all in
these playoffs, and so I think it becomes very quickly
and even or perhaps he even advantaged Houston series if
they can find a way to win a game tonight
behind their race. That's why this is a very very
still still very much in the early stages, Doug, of
this great World series. You mentioned that the Astros are
going with the exact same lineup. Not so for the
(01:34:00):
Dodgers Jack Peterson, who you know, they traded Curtis Granerson,
mostly because they were moving on from Jack Peterson and
Graanerson not even on the on the roster here for
the World's the active roster for the World Series. They
could play him, and they're gonna play Chase Utley. Why
those two decisions from Dave Roberts all about getting lefty
bats in there against Verlander. And the one surprise I
(01:34:22):
had was that we did not see Andre Ethier in
there instead of Peterson and the left because you look
at what heath Here did in the last round. He
had a home run at Wrigley, which is a great
moment for him. Of course it coming off of um
off of the injury that he kept him out for
almost the entire season. So to me, eat Here might
have been a better choice. Peterson, though, is the better defender,
(01:34:43):
even though in these playoffs so far Peterson just one
for five with two strikeouts, so it's not as though
he's a massive offensive upgrade over eat Here even though
he's here. Perhaps is the is the less mobile defender.
I think we can safely say at the stage of
Andre's career. Great stuff, John paul I, thanks so much
for joining us. Enjoy tonight's game and we'll talk to you.
(01:35:04):
We get ready for Game three, my pleasure, Dug, and
we will see how things go for the Amazing Blue
this weekend. This is going to be a struggle there
for for Michigan. It has been a struggle of late,
but I think all the focus this weekend during the
Big Ten. Yeah, look, I I'm not I haven't sold
things Champa. I haven't sold my Michigan stock just yet.
I mean, people forget last year this time Penn State
was coming off of a whooping at the hands of Michigan,
(01:35:26):
and they turned around and then one the rest of
their games ended up winning in the losing in a
great game in the Rose Bowl. Alright, Matt Holliday will
join us. I'll ask him about what change with Justin Turner.
How does the guy from get go from getting a
d f aid with the Mets to being the most
prodigious postseason hitter we've ever seen in the in the
(01:35:47):
modern era. And I'll ask him about facing ver Lander.
He's done in a bunch. I'll ask him about facing
rich Hill in that curveball, like, how do you hit
arguably you know one of the two or three best
curveballs in the game would seem like a difficult thing
to do. That baseball discussion brought you by True Car.

Why is Kyrie Irving struggling without lebron? Colin Coward, who
said he's struggling, offered up an idea of thought. I'll
share with you my thoughts on his thoughts, something we

Terms of conditions apply. I Love l A or New
York New York Better song, end of a game, I
(01:36:51):
mean Ramos is gonna pick I love l A. Because
he's all about Dodgers, about all about the Blue Crew,
the Blue I wondered, like Dan Buyer, you're not from
Los Angeles, you live in Los Angeles. Maybe he's a
better you know, he's just a better balance about him.
Buyer by a New York, New York ra I Love
(01:37:12):
l A. It is a tough call, but I will
say this, the beginning of I Love l A is
very iconic, and so you know, so I would almost
lean towards that, just anom so you know what's coming.
I think that maybe that gives it a sled edge. Yeah,
well here's the good thing. They actually queue it up
to the good part, right right, But the beginning of
(01:37:35):
New York, New York is pretty good too, like bamp
bamp bam bam bap, like it's and it's Sinatra, right,
like it's Sinatra. So the real beginning to I Love
L A is uh is kind of hey, New York
City cold, it is damn you know. The people dress
(01:37:55):
like mongoose, right that that's actually how it actually, but
they Q two it. So you're going, I Love L A.
And this is as a Milwaukee born never even lived
in I mean Wisconsin Borne, but at Wisconsin Milwaukee's Close
Up Wisconsin born radio host right, like you can't get
anymore like there is no I mean, yeah, it was consent,
(01:38:17):
but that's not like a song you play. What do
they play at the Inner Brewers games? Does anybody know? Well?
They play roll out the Barrel at the seventh inning stretch.
I know we're at the barrel. It's famous, it's iconic. Uh.
And the game do they have any is there are?
Do other places always played the same music. I'm trying
to think. I'm not sure. And I was even thinking
Laker games, don't they play I love l A at
(01:38:38):
they do? And that's the thing about see Laker and
I did do it. I think at the end of
Knicks games as well. Uh, just the Knicks haven't won ever.
They still have a CD. That's how long it's been.
The Q up on a on an eight tracks. That's
the last time the Knicks one. Um, all right, that's
a good we'll ask. I'll ask Matt Holiday is gonna
join us? Well kind of, Well, maybe we'll play them
(01:39:01):
both for you and see which one. I do think
that the Lakers playing I leve l A does make
me think of eighties Showtime, Fast Break Lakers, and that
helps the song, but that doesn't make the song anymore iconic.
But in the essence of what you're talking about, of
where it's played and how it's played at the end
of the game, I think that has a lot too.
(01:39:21):
I mean, there's you're not gonna compare what Randy Newman
against Frank Sinatra that there's there's no there's no debate there.
But when Frank Sinatra write the theme to Toy Story, right,
did he did he write? Do you write all these
these scores that I'm kidding. I mean Randy Newman when
I say I Randy Newman, Now I was kidding. You're right,
You're not going to compare the two. You're talking about
(01:39:41):
just the song on its merits, yes, and where it
is played and how it is utilized, right stuff. Let's
find out what the fun nor onally do this earlier
in the show. Instead, we had randommor Last Hour what
Matt Holiday in mirror moments? Uh, we like to play
for you a portion of a show earlier today on
Fox Sports Radio. Colin Cowherd Show proceeds Ours on Serious
(01:40:05):
x eight three and on many of the hundreds of
affiliates said, we're so honored to be on. You can
also see his show on Fox Sports one. He had
this to say about Kyrie Irving in his first experiences
post Lebron Kyrie Irving, I was checking with Kyrie Irving.
He is now shooting thirty seven percent on the year,
and last year he shot forty seven percent on the year.
(01:40:25):
So obviously things are not working out for Kyrie Irving.
But let's not exaggerate it. It is true that Kyrie
shoots a better percentage with Lebron almost forty seven percent
in his career, then without Lebron about this year, his
numbers are way down, way down, way down. But that's
it's only a couple of games into the season. Let's
(01:40:47):
not go crazy criticizing Kyrie Irving this year yet. But
you know what Kyrie Irving is. He is Scottie Pippen.
Life without Lebron and Michael Jordan's is different. Not used
on the court, but off. Kyrie and Scottie Pippen are
both great with or without the man. But vice president
to president isn't just about the office in a cool
(01:41:10):
new pen. It's called responsibility, and it weighs a lot
we're already seeing with Kyrine shooting percentage down, yelling at fans,
Scottie Pippen go back google it. I refused to go
in and when they asked him about it, he was
as honest as Scotty has ever been. And I'm tired
of this. It is so much easier to be the
(01:41:33):
two and want to be paid like the one. Uh
look that that sounds great, but remember Carrie Irving lost
Gordon Hayward. One of the reasons that they're not getting
as good as shots is because when he's in a
new system which is different. But two, he was supposed
to have a co star in this play that's known
as the Boston Celtics, and he hasn't had him since
(01:41:55):
the first quarter of the first game. And they looked
up on the Celtics, and they looked up on the Knicks.
Last night. They be the Nicks so bad that Tim
Hardaway was asked what what what went well? What went right?
And he said nothing, nothing is going right. So like, look,
we can you can pick apart the pack that he
was five or thirteen. He played thirty minutes he had
you know uh what he ended up with. He had
(01:42:18):
twenty points and seven assists and one steel, three rebounds,
three turnovers, and they won by one points. Like, I
don't you know, Jalen Brown's playing better, Jason Tatum is
playing well. He's playing essentially with two teenagers as starters
in a completely different system without his other start. Like
(01:42:39):
what do you think Kery would have done if Lebron
didn't play for an entire season? Right? Okay, maybe Gordon
Haywards not Lebron, But like, let's just be honest. You
have a two stuperstar team and you take away one supercian.
I don't think Gordon Haywards nearly as good as Lebron
or as good as somebody's stupid. He's a good player.
Teams have to reformulate themselves. So I think we're we're
(01:43:02):
going way too crazy about what he's doing, what he's
not doing, because he told uh A Philadelphia seventy six
are fan off. There's seventy six er fans right, Like
people in Philadelphia at games can be disgusting and occasionally
they deserve to be told off. You don't do it
all the time. If you do it once or twice
a year, I'm not gonna go crazy about it. I'm
(01:43:25):
Matt Holiday joins us in moments you heard from Dan
Buyer earlier. He is, uh, he's getting us ready for
the World Series, as well as updating us on everything
else in the world of sports. What he got from
me day and we got some World Series news involving tonight.
Jack Peterson's gonna played left field for the Dodgers in
bat six as they faced Justin Verlander or the Astros,
(01:43:45):
Dodgers countering with Richell. You'll see it at seven thirty
Eastern time tonight on Fox. The Astros have also named
their starters for Games three and four. Lance mccullors gets
the ball in Game three, Charlie Morton goes in Game four.
Some news from the NFL. Pittsburgh stealer s wide receiver
Martavis Bryant will be an active Sunday against the Lions.
Of course, he didn't show up to team facilities on Monday,
(01:44:06):
saying he had a doctor's appointment. Prior to that, Bryant
had expressed his displeasure of being in Pittsburgh and wanting
a trade. The NFL trade deadline comes up on Tuesday.
Bryant won't play against the Lions as he was relegated
to scout team duty in practice today. Speaking of the Lions,
they gave kicker Matt Prater a three year extension with
the team could be worth more than twelve million dollars,
(01:44:28):
making him the fourth highest paid kicker in the NFL. Again,
Lions and Steelers coming up on Sunday night. We don't
know when the NFL owners and players are going to
meet again on social issues, but Yahoo Sports say is
that Colin Kaepernick will attend that next meeting. Again, not
known when that meeting will take place. In the NBA,
Sixers want to first overall, picked Marquel Folts for the
next three games because of discomfort in his shoulder. Jimmy
(01:44:50):
Butler remains zill. He's gonna miss his second straight game
tonight for the Timberwolves, while Calv's guard Dwyane Wade dug
out again because of a knee contusion. They take on
the Brooklyn Nets, who are likely without D'Angelo Russell tonight
because of any spring All right, no Danzel Russell tonight.
That's not a lot of scoring then coming from the Nets,
Thanks so much, Dan Dan Bayer joining us um. There's
(01:45:11):
a lot of stuff getting ready to see a Lonzo
Ball take on John Wall looked part of the John
Wallas coming for Alonzo Ball. That's the way the NBA
is supposed to be. It's the way the NBA is
supposed to be. Like, they're supposed to be a little
bit of trash talk. They're supposed to be a reason
to watch a game. There's supposed to be two dudes
getting after it, veterans getting after younger guys. Supposed to
(01:45:34):
be that stuff. I'm not bothered by in any way,
nor should you be. Simply makes you want to watch.
Will also be watching Game three of the World Series.
Matt Holiday, seven time All Star, fore five four time
Silver Slugger joins us every game day here on the
Doug Gottlieb Show. All right, So, how much of last
night was Kershaw and his brilliance? How much of it
(01:45:56):
was the fact that that the the umpire was choosing
to have a very sizeable strike zone? Both, it's both.
You know, when when a guy like him is able
to get a little bit off the plate, it makes
it all the more challenging UH to hit as far
as Uh he can pitch to both sides of the
plate and get a little bit off and then all
of a sudden, you've got expand your zone. You start
(01:46:18):
swinging the pitches you typically wouldn't swing at. It changed
his counts. When kerk shuck, his counts changed. Um, he
has pitches to strike you out to where you get
a one one pitch, it's just off the plate. Now
it's one too. Then he can throw flider in the dirt.
You know it's where if if he doesn't get that call,
it's to one. And then all of a sudden you're
in a much better position. So the combination of his
(01:46:39):
tremendous stuff and a and a picture friendly uh strike
zone is is not good for hitting. So I think
it was both. He was on he had all his
pitches last night, but I definitely think when you have
an umpire that's wanting to give a little bit off
both fives, you're in trouble, all right. Uh the seventh inning,
I was like anybody, I'm intrigued to see what he
does in seventh And he's pitch account wasn't high, so
(01:47:01):
it wasn't like he was worn down. But the seventh
has been his his tough ending in the postseason, and
they had a chance to get out of it twice.
First devil playball was it was too deeply hit, It
wasn't wasn't gonna happen. But the second one, Corey Seager
bobble did and end up did he did get al
two v at second base. You're watching at home, I'm
watching in the stadium. Did you think, all right, that's
those are the type of things that usually lead to
(01:47:22):
an inning going bed? Was I the only person thinking that? Yeah?
I think so. But having watched the way he was
manipulating the ball and and moving the ball, and I
didn't feel like he was any real trouble, you know,
I think that the way he was pitching last night, um,
I never felt like the astros um where much of
(01:47:43):
it felt like a much bigger lead than three to one.
I don't know if he felt that in the park,
but I felt like a three to one the game
was over the way he was pitching and then turning
the ball over to to their back into their bullpen um.
But I wasn't too concerned. That is typically how something
like that happens, where you know, a couple of plays
that aren't don't get made, and then one swing of
the bat could have tied the game. Um, but I
(01:48:04):
felt pretty good about where he was with locating his
stuff and and wasn't too concerned that that would cost him. All. Right,
explain to me the justin turn of thing, like, I
don't how does this? How does this happen? Right? I
mean because for for people who haven't fall, I mean,
I think everybody kind of knows the story that he
was he's d f aide, right, But I mean, like
you go back, he didn't do anything with Baltimore. He
(01:48:24):
doesn't really, he's not really doing much with the Mets,
And all of a sudden, now he's had the most
prodigious postseason in modern baseball history. And this is coming
off of a year which, look, he only hit twenty
one home runs, but Dodger Stadium is hard, but he's
on base of the time. He's hitting three twenty two?
Is his war is six point one? How do you
go from a guy with negative war to a guy
(01:48:45):
with a six point one war? You know, I think
he made a drastic change in a swing. Um, I
think he's learned how to hit the ball in the air.
He's he's got a plan. He stands right on top
of the plate so that he can he can pull
any pitch that he you know, that's on the plate,
he's in a good position to pull it. I think
that's he's realized that his strength is to pull the
ball in the air, and and he's he's made the
(01:49:07):
the adjustments. He's he stands pretty pretty erect so that
he can cover the ball in and then he's got
the you know, the the leg kick um and he's
looking to pull the ball in the air. And I
think that somebody along the line, somewhere along the line,
had you know, made in a major in his sling.
A lot like a lot of guys that you'll see
that kind of come out of nowhere and all of
(01:49:27):
a sudden they're hitting thirty homers. It takes a drastic adjustment,
you know. Bautista was one guy that was with several
different teams not hitting pre any power, and then the
next thing, you know, he's hitty home run. So I
think it was somebody along the line got a hold
of him, made a drastic adjustment, and his style of
hitting stopped hitting down on the ball, start hitting inside
and up through the ball, and then get right up
(01:49:49):
on the plate and let the pull the ball. And
I think that somebody, Uh, you know, he's probably credit
somebody along the way to really of of changing his
career and and all of a sudden he's a major threat,
and um, you know it's somebody that, um, it's the
guy that you don't want to beat you and it's
you know, that's great for him. You know, you gotta
give a guy credit for for being willing to change
(01:50:10):
and try something different. All right. Uh, I texted this
to you last night because I was wondering, like, look,
I understand you use Tomorrow three outs, ten pitches, You
hand it to Jansen, and you're like, drive you You're
almost everybody's kind of grabbing their keys and getting their
jackets as soon as as soon as they started playing
California Love and Kenley Jansen comes walking down the bullpen.
(01:50:31):
But also, you have to win four of these games,
and he's gonna have to appear in probably four of
the games. You know, if you're not gonna blow it,
you don't feel like you're gonna blow out the Astros,
especially once you once you get to Houston, and I
just wonder if you had a two run lead in
Morrow's doing fine. He didn't leave him in for the
ninth so that they don't see Kenley stuff. How much
(01:50:52):
does seeing somebody's stuff actually help you. I think it's minimal,
especially when if the guy was high and stuff. You know,
it doesn't matter if you know what Kimmy Jansen's throwing,
if you've seen it, that doesn't necessarily make it much
easier to hit. Um. He pitches at the top of
the strike zone, like we talked about yesterday. Uh he
he doesn't throw many balls over the middle of the plate,
(01:51:12):
So I don't think it's a big factor. I think
that he's their horse and any chance they get a
chance to give him the ball, whether it's the eighth
or ninth inning, he's gonna get it, and I doesn't matter.
I don't think they're worried about exposure or what the
astroists see. Um I he's one of those guys that,
like I said, he can pitch with the cutter, tell
you it's coming. He still can't hit it all right,
you know the curveball is coming from rich Hill, but
(01:51:34):
it's become a he here's a guy who went from
uh you know, signing a training camp deal a couple
of years ago to having last year the best curveball
in the sport, when you when you get in there
against riche Hill, how do you how do you approach
the curveball? Yeah. I think the one thing with him
is that his fastball is sneaky enough that that I
don't think he can come off the fastball and just
(01:51:55):
stay on the fastball and look for the breaking ball
that starts higher than normal. So the one that starts
going to be above your head is the one that
you can hit. And anything that starts maybe blow your
chin and something that's gonna end up in the dirt
or out of the stripes. So you have to change
your sites on what you're looking for. As far as
a breaking ball shows up, um, you know, when God
(01:52:17):
has that much break and and that much spin, um,
you need you need to visualize it's starting a little
bit higher for it to be something you could handle. Um.
I think he's one of those guys that you try
to get him early in the account, before he gets
to his pluts breaking ball, the one that he can
bury in the dirt. I think you try to get
to the fastball and early account and and look out
over his command of his fastball is not great. Uh
(01:52:40):
So I think that you look for a fastball mistake
early in account, then you battle if you get the
two stripes, and and like I said, try to lay
off the breaking ball that starts um, you know, chin high,
because that's the one that he wants to swing out.
That's that's it's gonna end up in the dirt. But no,
you've had some success against Berlin facing a ton, but
you're numbers are good against Justin Verlander, and everybody else's
(01:53:03):
are bad against Verlander. Um. So look again, haven't seen him,
but you haven't seen him a ton, but they're pretty
good when you're standing there against Justin Verlander, who's one
of the best right handers in baseball over the last decade. Uh,
what are you seeing? Yeah, I think another guy. You
gotta get to his fastball early in the account. And
I think that that's one of the things he did
really well against Class in the playoffs, is he located
(01:53:24):
his fastball, um, you know, early in the account, kind
of down in a way, nothing great to hit but
on the plate, and so we got behind in some
counts and and you know, I think his slider is
really uh made him. I think he's taken you know,
his sladder is much better pitch than it hasn't been
in the past. He's been mostly more curveball, but he's
more slider now. And the combination of seven with good
(01:53:48):
location down and away from ryhand hitter and then throwing
a slider off of it has been a culmination that
I don't think he's mastered in the past quite like
he has right now. And you know, the path in
his playoffs and his last starts with with the Astros,
and so he's kind of changed his style a little bit.
He used to be a little bit more curveball, and
now he's more slider, and he's pitching in the lefty
(01:54:09):
so that side of the plate is really what he's dominating,
that first space slide of the plate and pitching hard
in the lefties and and sliders at their back foot
and then fastball down in the later rideings and and
slidder off of it. So the combination of of those
two pitches has been really impressive, you know. And I
think that as as as the Dodgers will hope that
maybe you know, his slider won't be on, it won't
(01:54:31):
be as sharp, and and maybe his fastball command early
an account won't be as good and you'll try to
get him that way. So he's, uh, you know, when
he's pitching at those high velocities, it's uh, he's he's
very tough to hit. Okay, So they put Jack Peterson
and uh and Utly into the lineup for the Dodgers
one because they're left handed and to the pretty good
(01:54:51):
with high velocity. Do you like those two moves? Utly?
I just you start to wonder if he's just I
get that he's come through so many times in the past,
but how much is he having the tank? I guess
to the question, Yeah, you know, I think he's a grinder.
He's somebody's gonna give you a tough oft bat. He's
gonna take some pitches. I don't know. Um, you know,
the strategy might be to try to run the pitch
(01:55:11):
count out. But I think you know, Berlin, there's dominant
of right hand hitters in this playoffs, and the way
he dominated some of our right really good right hand hitters.
I think that that Dave Roberts has tried to try
to avoid um sticking his you know, his right hand
hitters in there. Again, he's like that combination of that
fastball and that fladder would be my guess is what
he's doing. And uh, you know, I like it. I
(01:55:32):
mean I guess you know, if that's the kind of
the platoon that he's been doing, then you stick with it.
And then you know, you got the guys here the
left hand starters. You've got the guys to the right
hand starters. And and I guess if you you don't
like to get bats out of Utly and and Peterson tonight,
and then then uh, you know, next time, you know,
right hand pitchership, you know, tomorrow or the next day
whenever Morton pitches, then you go back to the Rady's.
(01:55:53):
But I think he's gonna give it. Listen, he's a
chance that Tyson the right handed starters. And yeah, I
hear your voice though that you don't you like Verlaine
or like a lot more you like rich Hill tonight.
That's just kind of what am I am I guessing wrong? Yeah,
I mean I think I do. I mean I think
that you know, blich Hill, I don't think you've made
it out of a fifth inning in the playoffs and
brilliant or absolutely you know, I saw with my own
(01:56:14):
eyes the dominance that that that he dominated our lineup,
which is a really good hitting lineup the way he
was able to dominate our line up with those combinations pitches,
unless his command is not as good tonight, I don't
think the Dodgers are going to score, so you know,
I don't I don't think they'll score more than one
or two runs. And obviously pitch count and how deep
he can get into the game. But um, I I
(01:56:36):
would say, if you know, as far as the matchup goes,
I would definitely sign on on Berlinder. But you know,
in the playoffs, it all it takes is a walk
and maybe a blue pit and and one mistake, and
you know you can have a three spot and and
all of a sudden, you know, the Dodgers get all
the momentum. But if I had to, if I had
to pick one side, I'd say, you know, the way
Brolins pitching, pretty easy choice. All right, man, listen, love
(01:56:58):
that you're joining us, Love the inst and appreciate you
spend some times here on Fox Sports Radio. All right,
ask my boy Matt Holiday joining us, seven time All Star,
four time Silver Slugger, joining us every game day of
the World Series. What did the Panthers organization have to
say about Cam Newton today walking out on a press conference.

(01:57:41):
allow to get to here today? UH? Including something interesting
going on in the NBA. I want to I want
to get to first, though, Let's let's get to the
press the press. With True Car, you can find out
what other people in the area pay for the same
car you're looking for newer used Visit True Card enjoy
more confident car buying experience. What do you got for me? Down?
(01:58:01):
You touched on it with Matt Holiday a bit. But
the Dodgers putting Jack Peterson in the lineup tonight playing
left field, batting sixth, He's gonna be able to They
hope you'll be able to handle Justin Verlander with Chase
Utley batting eighth and playing second. Also should be noted
that the Astros set up their rotation for the next
two games. Lanson mcculors goes in Game three, Charlie Morton
will start in Game four for Houston. M hmm, uh yeah,
(01:58:26):
I'm I'm fast that the you know, Morten obviously pitched
so well in his last outing, and of course, uh
we saw what Lance mccullors was able to do. The
you Darvish not getting the start tonight. Rich Hill does
get the start tonight, It's like, Wow, we we out
on you Darvish that quickly. And I'm interested in the
fact that you go from lefty to another lefty and
rich Hill hasn't been great and postseasons he just hasn't.
(01:58:49):
We'll see, Dave Roberts. That's rolling the dice, especially considering that, uh,
you know, rich Hill starting game two means you expect
him to start later on the series if the series
gets extended. Yes, yes you do. Hey, Doug. We have
a follow up to the Cam Newton story. And for
those that are just tuning in Cam Newton today, it
was asked a question about Chunk plays plays with big yardage.
(01:59:12):
Cam said Uh, well, here at Big plays, Big Chunk plays,
jod get to that energy. I think that you're talking
about does this offense? And I know you had had
several at Detroit, New England. You think you guys have
the wherewith all to do that consistently weekend on weekend.
(01:59:33):
Next question, you probably did so. Next question that he
walked away. The Panthers released a statement saying Newton left
the session because, quote, in his mind, after answering questions
for nine minutes, felt he fulfilled his obligations, and it
also added Cam didn't mean to be discourtius toward any
(01:59:53):
specific media member. Well that's what he meant. U A
goal was not accomplished. We didn't mean to be discourteous,
like I want to trying to be rude. That's like
saying no disrespect, but something disrespectful coming. I don't mean
to be discourteous, but I'm gonna walk out right now
while you still have questions. Okay. Or by the way,
(02:00:15):
Tiger Woods, according to Ian Baker, Finch look pretty good
in practice. Yeah, listen, I was very cautious before opening
the email that said Tiger Tiger Stinger is back, right,
was like, whoa whoa look left. I looked on my right.
I made sure that I wasn't on my Fox Sports
radio email, which I have not started yet, and like
(02:00:36):
on my own account open that. I'm like, oh, it's
a golf swing stinger. Good. Yes, he does look pretty good.
Steeler's wide receiver Martavis Bryant will be inactive for Sunday's
game against the Lions. In fact, the Steelers put him
on the scout team today. That's worse than switching over
Jersey's That's like, that's making you into a shagger. Why
don't you go shagballs for everybody else? Since you're not
(02:00:58):
gonna play Martavis, You're gonna play the role of Eric
Ebron today. Um. Speaking of the Lions, Matt Prateror got
a three year extension from the team, fourth highest paid
kicker of the NFL behind Stephen Gaskowski, Justin Tucker and
Mason Crosby. Praters great, he's good. He was great with Denver.
I mean, he's the real reason that Tebow made the
playoffs to begin with. But it should be it should
(02:01:18):
be like kickers go bad in a hurry. Why give
a long term deal to a kicker that one I
don't understand. Yeah, who sports is? Colin Kaepernick will attend
the next meeting involving NFL owners and players that centers
around social issues. Just don't know when that meeting is
going to take place. Uh, oh, you didn't make this meeting.
I'm sorry. Do we forget to call you? Listen? Come
(02:01:38):
to the next one? When is it? No idea? Get
out there and pressed the press? Why you Darvish is
not sorry to night? Was that? Why do you do
you take you guests? Um? Uh? Because five point to
five rod r a two point four flour There you go.
I mean, I guess that like doesn't like Dodgers Stadium.
(02:01:58):
He's the only guy doesn't like Dodger Stadium. Have we determined?
I love l A better than New York New York.
It's Sinatra. There, go go ahead, hit it right, it does?
It gets you fired up? Alright, let me hear the
beginning of New York, New York. Do you have that?
That's pretty strong, dude, it is, but I think of
the city of New York, not just the Yankees. You
just don't like New York. It's okay, l A is better.
(02:02:20):
You're right, Dan, Dan, You're right on this one al
Googa tree. Daniel Jeremiah R. Joe Bell,
