Speaker 1 (00:00):
Boo, What Up America? Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio
coming to you live and direct from the City of
Angels Where not so Sunday Today overcast. Maybe the Big
Fellow doesn't want baseball played on Halloween. Maybe he just
doesn't want to see rich Hill tonight pitch four innings
against Justin Verlandard. We'll get you updated on the weather
(00:21):
for the World Series and whether we will see a
World Series, plus what hitters will be seeing from Justin
Verland or Matt Holiday, seven time All Star, four time
Silver Slugger will join us as he has throughout the
World Series. Get his thoughts on tonight's matchup. Mark Lath,
three times Super Bowl champion, will joinas in fifteen minutes,
we'll try and figure out why the Broncos offense is
(00:42):
so offensive to watch tons to get to metric tons.
Benjamin Watson, former Patriot, former St. Current Ravens tight end
will join us. We'll ask him about what's happened so
far today and I believe we still have one more
hour for more to happen, and that is trade deadline
(01:03):
news in the National Football League. This doesn't normally happen
and and looked at the trend really started the past
couple off seasons in which we've seen player for player trades.
We've seen some player for player trades, even from the
Patriots this year trading uh, Jacoby Brissette for Philip Dorset, right, which,
(01:26):
by the way, Colts won that trade. Like, if you
want to say the Patriots are awesome, you can. But
if you want to say the Patriots won that trade,
you're an idiot, because as much as the Colts haven't
been good, Brissette has some value whereas Dorset has done
nothing nothing. Um. But obviously the big news of the
(01:52):
day is Jimmy Garoppolo was traded last night. So too
was Dwayne Brown, so too was j g I. And
so when three starters are traded, there is the thought that, well,
there's a trend, right, it's a trend. But but I
(02:12):
look at these trades and I look at him like, um,
you're her Peyton Manning talk about interceptions. When Peyton Manning
talks about interceptions, he always says the same thing. Everyone
has a story of itself, right, And that's exactly what
we have with these trades. The Jimmy Garoppolo story is
(02:33):
different from the Duyne Brown story. There is a parallel
there in that both dudes wanted to get paid, but
in completely different parts of their career and handlding completely
different ways. So obviously you start with the Paths who
finally bailed on Jimmy g Here's Bill Belichick, who um
(02:56):
doesn't always necessarily let us in, but did give us
his thoughts on a conference call as to why the
deal was made. Probably had, in my opinion, the best
quarterback situation in the league for the last called two
and a half years. It's just not sustainable given the
way that things are set up. Definitely not something that
we wanted to walk away from. And I felt like
(03:17):
we wrote it out as long as we could. At
this point, I felt like we had to make a decision.
This is really the last window that we had, and
we did we felt as best for the team. We
had a declining asset we had to get rid of.
We we had to move on from him or get
nothing back in return. And I also believe, and this
is probably uh pretty easy, that he wanted to see
(03:40):
if in fact Tom Brady was as spriteful, was as
youthful as Tom Brady believed he was. And now that
you've gotten into the bye week. And by the way,
Brian Hoyer, who was a quarterback with the San Francisco
for the Niners, was released. Of course they don't want
to pay the type of money that Howyer was making.
So I'm sure a Hoyer is going to sign with
(04:00):
them to be their backup. And you have Tom Brady
and you've got something in return for Jimmy Garoppolo. People
do this with leasing cars all the time. There's two websites,
uh lease at least Trader and swap Police. And my
brother does this right you. You you acquire somebody else's lease,
(04:20):
which is somebody else paid the down payment, and right
before the leases up, when you get nothing back in return,
you sell the car for a little bit more than
the whatever the residual value or the payoff actually is
of that lease. And the spread of that five hundred
bucks thousand bucks, that's that's that's found money. And that's
(04:44):
essentially what you have here with Jimmy Garoppolo. They got
him in the draft, that used him his backup. He
was the starter for a very short period time last
year before he got hurt and said had to start
the game against the Houston Texans, and seeing as they
were gonna have to give that car back at the
end to the year, they got something in return. Now,
is it dangerous to not have nearly as viable backup
(05:08):
for half a season with a four year old Tom Brady?
It is, But that's a risk worth paying, especially playing,
especially considering the likelihood that they can acquire somebody like
Lawyer who already knows their system and gets a week
and a half to prepare because they're on a on
a by this week. That's that story. The Dwayne Brown story,
(05:28):
to me, is exactly what you think it is. That's
an f you. Now, there's two types of f you.
Like if j G I was traded because Adam Gaze
wanted to make a point to players in the locker room,
like trading a running back away from a team that's
losing and not gonna make the playoffs to the best
team in football, it doesn't seem like nearly the f you.
(05:51):
And Frankly, trading Dwayne Brown away to the Seattle Seahawks,
who's there as good or a better team than the
Houston Texans, doesn't seem like an nephew. Remember, Dwayne Brown
was holding out and then only came back because the
hold up proved to be moot. It just did, and
(06:13):
so Sunday, when he played all but three snaps on offense,
was essentially an audition. He had great leverage rule in
the year when the Texans couldn't block anybody when their
offense was a joke. But when they change offenses and
change quarterbacks, suddenly left tackle seemed his his position. Left
tackle seemed like one that was replaceable, and so they
(06:36):
got a cornerback and a draft pick in return for
a guy who not only didn't want to be there,
wanted to get paid, and essentially said that the owner
was a racist. Right, this is a the if you
want to use the expression the inmates don't run the
asylum doesn't happen in Houston. I'm sure there are other reasons.
(06:59):
The salary and the fact do you wanted to get
paid and they're probably gonna move on from him, and
they proved they could win without him to a certain extent.
All that plays in a factor. But you can't tell
me that speaking to the media after a tough loss
in Seattle and saying to the media, we're essentially playing
for ourselves, and then you're you're in the other locker
room two days later that that is exactly what you
(07:20):
think it is. That's, you know what, The inmates do
not run the asylum here. And if you don't like
the expression, well then you're gonna have to understand that
expression has been around a lot longer than the NFL
and has nothing to do but do the color of
Dwayne brown skin because I don't believe he's ever been
an inmate, so let's not make an inference that's not
even there. And then there's a J. J. I, which
(07:45):
I'm sure there's some of the unhappiness with the Dolphins
offense by by j j I, but a lot of
it is what's his actual value on the market. Fourth
round pick for a guy that's got a bum knee,
a guy that's passed his peak as a running back.
You take what you can get while you can get it.
(08:08):
Randy Moss, remember, was traded for a fourth round pick
when he was traded from the New England Patriots. It
does feel like Seattle got better. It does feel like
uh San Francisco is now out of the quarterback nicks
for this year's draft, And maybe that says what they
think about the quarterback mix and the Philadelphia Eagles did
get a starting caliber running back. But just because three
(08:28):
starters were traded all in the same day does not
a narrative make Just like uh, just like Peyton Manning
would always say about interceptions, each trade is a story
unto themselves. I'm getting to an economics discussion with about
the new purchase LaVar Ball made Alonzo Ball's behalf on Twitter.
(08:49):
You can tweet me at Gottlieb Show, hit me up
on the phone lines eight s. Fox got a ton
to get to. By the way, the Golden State Warriors
still own the l A Sippers no matter who plays
in the Clippers uniform. That was a bludgeoning. That was
an absolute beat down. We'll get to the World Series.
We'll talk about what this means for Tom Brady and
(09:11):
how Tom Brady is exactly like Brett Farve even though
he's handling it the exact opposite of Brett Farve, and
the Denver Broncos offense is offensive. That's upcoming next with
with Mark Slaire. This NFL discussion is brought you by
True Car. With True Card, you can find out what
(09:31):
other people in your area paid for the same car.
You're looking for new or used, visit True Car to
enjoy more confident car buying experience. Three times Super Bowl
champion Mark Schlaira tells us exactly why the Denver Broncos
choose to only play one side of the football. Next
in the Dug Gollip Show. With True Car, you can
find out what other people in your area paid for
the same car you're looking for and on average save
(09:52):
over three th m s r P. Whether you're looking
for a new or used car, visit True Car and
enjoying more confident car buying EXPERI is Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio. Um, look, I guess the Kancity Chiefs
are awesome. I'm okay saying that, Um, but you can
also you can say the Kandy Chiefs are a really
good football team and at the same time have the
(10:15):
balance to say, what's going on with the Denver Broncos
quarterback situation is nothing short of embarrassing, right because they
have they got terrific defense. There's no reason for them
to be three and four outside of the fact that
the quarterback play has been subpar. But you know that
they drafted Paxton Lynch and he wasn't ready or good
(10:36):
enough in the preseason, then he was hurt. Uh, they
have three quarterbacks on the roster. Most teams only carried two,
and I can't figure out why they keep trotting out
Trevor Simeon. You know who might know? The guy who
does local radio and a guy who, of course you
can see on National TV cover covering the NFL on Fox.
You'll see on Fox Sports one as well. He's a
(10:58):
former Denver bronco, part of a couple of Super Bowl
champion teams. He's March Layer if he joins us on
the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. How bad
must Paxton lynch By if they continue to hand the
allow Trevor Simming to be their quarterback? Well, I mean bad.
And here's the deal, Dougie. I mean, obviously he was
(11:19):
inactive last night. He's still coming off that injury. Last
week was the first time that he even got into
doing a little bit of practicing, so he wasn't ready.
But the thing that I can't understand is the Kansas
City Chiefs are a flawed football team. They have got
some some fatal flaws. One of them is they cannot
defend the run. They have not defended the run. And
you know, the Broncos average heck five and a half
(11:41):
yards to carry. I mean, they bludgeoned the Chiefs last night,
and had it not been for subpar quarterback play, had
it not been for turnovers, they win that game. Even
with the you know, even with the fumble recovery for
a touchdown, and and even with the you know, the
muff point, they still win that game if they just
(12:02):
get a quarterback that doesn't turn the ball over. So
what I can't understand, and I heard you're bringing bringing
up Trevor cry and stuff, is at some point, why
did you not pull him? Like, why is brock Osweiler
on your team? Why did you not pull Trevor last
night with a chance to win that football game, dominating
the line of scrimmage, running the football. Um, I just
(12:23):
it's beyond me that you didn't pull him last night
because the first three balls that he threw the game
the first quarter, he dirted two of them and he
threw one out of bounds. You're like, right now he
is coming off of every throw. And now, granted the
kid is tough. The kid took a beating last year
he played with his shoulders that needed surgery the entirety
(12:44):
of the season last year. And I thought he played
pretty well in the first two games of the season.
Then he started getting hit again, he started getting beat
down again. He's playing like he's injured, and he's coming
off of every throw. He doesn't step into any throw.
That's why his accuracy is so bad. Um And and
you know, I mean, obviously right now, he's a guy
that's and I'm not calling him afraid, but he's the
(13:05):
guy doesn't want to get hit right now. He's protecting
his body and it shows in the way he plays.
And yet you won't even pull him in a game
that you should have won. You should have gone to
Kansas City last night with the performance of the the
defense gave you and you should have won that football game.
And that, to me, is on the coaching staff, like
you're you're you're afraid or either that, or it's on
(13:26):
John Elway and the management saying we're gonna wait until
Paxton Lynch is healthy enough and then we're gonna make
that that move. And to me, you've got an a
f C where the wild card team, the wild card
teams are gonna be nine and seven at best, You've
got a chance to win a game and go four
and three and put yourself in a position to still
be in that wild card race, and you chose just
(13:46):
to leave a guy in that Seriously, right now, he
can't play. He's not an NFL quarterback right now. That's
the voice of Marshlaire at three times Super Bowl champion,
former Denver Bronco. And of course you can see him
the NFL on Fox. He just weekly here on the
Doug Gotlipio. Let's get to the news of the day.
Jimmy Garoppolo traded from the Patriots to the San Francisco
(14:07):
forty Niners. What's your immediate reaction when you hear that?
That they must they must know that that Tom Brady
has found the fountain of youth and you know, a
second round pick for Jimmy Garoppolo. And uh, they knew
they weren't gonna get Jimmy signed. I know, they tried
to sign him. They knew they were gonna do that,
and they were gonna franchise the guys. So, um, they
(14:28):
must feel really confident that Brady can give them another
three or four years um of really high caliber quarterbacking.
So that that was my initial thought. I mean, good
for San Francisco if they feel like that's going to
solve some of their issues, at least at the quarterback position.
But you know, think about it. I mean, you look
at you look at Bill Belichick. Since he's taken over
(14:50):
the Patriots, he's traded five quarterbacks. Not one of those
quarterbacks has an over record. They have all been mediocre
when they've gotten their ants. Now. I think Bledsoe, Wayne traded.
Bledsoe was a five quarterback in Buffalo. But um, you know,
for the most part, they just have not They have
not been able to have success with those quarterbacks they've
(15:12):
traded away, and now two of them in one season.
They traded away Jacobe Brisett in September two, I believe,
and then now trading away Garoppolo just yesterday. It's amazing
that they're they're willing to go down that route right now. Yeah,
I mean really, it really is, considering how old Tom
Brady is and how we've seen other more youthful quarterbacks.
(15:33):
Uh get you know, get hurt. It's a it's a
risky game to to to play. Duyne Brown of course,
held out, came back played against Seattle. Uh there were
thoughts they were gonna try and trade him anyway, and
then of course, um, he was one of the kind
of the spokesman spokesman for the protest against the owner.
What's your thoughts on Dwayne Brown going to Seattle who
(15:55):
has been in desperate need of helping their offensive line
and definitely they've needed that. He's an elite left tackle.
He's a great player. He's thirty two years old. In
the left tackle game, you know that guy still has
another three or four years where you could play at
a very high level. And Seattle, it helps them instantly,
makes them better, solidifies that left tackle position. Now they
(16:17):
can mix and match some of the other guys up
inside a guard and at the right tackle position. Really
helps him because that's been their biggest issue, inability to
run the ball, inability to be consistent upfront, that's been
the big issue. And they just addressed that their biggest
issue in their biggest need, um, you know, chasing an
(16:38):
NFC title. So it really in my mind, it really
puts them to the forefront of the NFC teams. Uh
and and the team that I think probably becomes the
team to beat J J. I goes from the Dolphins,
who who I guess wanted to shake some things up
since their offense was just awful when we saw them
last Thursday, to the Philadelphi Eagles, who have the US
(17:00):
record in the NFL. Is he that big a difference
maker for the Eagles? I think he just gives them
another rotation at the running back position, and the guys,
you know, a big time player, they do a great
job of giving up the reps of the running back position.
But I think he instantly comes onto that football team
and becomes the most dynamic runner they have. I love Blunt.
(17:22):
Blunt is you know a guy that will run you over.
He's got some wiggle, but um instantly becomes kind of
their top kind of athletic, if you will, game breaking
type of running back. So I'm amazing what's going on
with the Dolphins right now, with the injuries that they
suffered as a team that many of us thought, you know,
it was gonna have a really good chance. There's still
(17:43):
I think four and three, but a really good chance
to compete in that a f C East for maybe
that division title or at least a wild card. Burthen
they have been just abysmal on the offensive side of
the ball. There's just like just so bad, so uh
it is. It's not a sacrificial lamp you see that.
Sometimes it's a guy that's a real player. Now, he's
had some knee surgeries or knee injuries coming out of
(18:05):
college that have always been a question mark, kind of
docked him to come draft time when he did come out.
But he's a guy that's been productive as a Pro
Bowl player last year. I think it instantly becomes one,
if one of, if not the best running back on
the Eagles roster as of now. As of now, um
Zeke is uh Zeke Elliott is suspended for the next
(18:27):
six games. If if that holds is such, how much
do you think this hurts the Cowboys? Well, I think
it hurts him. And they're a ball control They need
that ball control type of all offense. They need to
be able to run the football, throw it to their backs.
They need to grind out yardage and keep their defense
because their defense is fast, their defense is athletic, but
(18:48):
their defense can get shoved around and when they're when
they don't possess the ball as an offense, their defense
gets exposed in the games. They don't do that. When
they possessed the ball, they control the clock, they control
the temple with the game, with the running game, with
that all offensive line, um, you know, setting up the
play action stuff for DK Prescott. There are a tough
team to beat. So this is one of those situations.
(19:10):
I mean, I love about for Moore is a really
good back and all that, but Zekiel Elliott is special
and so this definitely hurts them because, you know, I
think the complimentary nature of football, you take away what
what they're best at is possessing the ball, running the ball,
and what he's done the last couple of weeks. You
take that away from that football team. And the more
time that defense spends on a football field, the more time,
(19:32):
the more opportunities they get to be exposed, and they
will be exposed if they don't possess the ball and
control the tempo. That's the voice of Mark Shlaire, three
time Super Bowl champions team NFL on Fox. Um, did
you see these stories out of Cleveland? I don't. I
don't know if you've been following this. I know that
you're h you're you're you know, you're all over on
TV and getting ready for your own games. The stories
(19:53):
out of Cleveland is a couple of a couple of
reporters have said that the the coaches were upset because
while the Garoppolo trade was going down, they were at
work and the front office went home at five o'clock
and then um uh, and so Sashi Brown was at home.
So even Hugh Jackson's daughter went to Twitter and essentially
(20:18):
affirmed that story that you know, you can't make you
can't make a trade if you're not on the phone.
What are your thoughts on what's going on? I mean, like, look,
here's Cleveland desperately need of a quarterback, and apparently Garoppolo
was was the guy Hugh Jackson wanted and the front
office wasn't even on the phone, wasn't even at work.
Is that I mean one, yes, I did see it too.
(20:39):
Does it surprise you? I mean, think about this, Jared Goff,
you're not good enough to play for us, Carson Wentz, No,
no thanks, we don't want you. Deshaun Watson now we're
gonna pass on you as well because we don't think
you can play. I mean, they're a mess, They're an
absolute mess. So it doesn't surprise me that that front office,
you know, day before the trade deadline, Um it took off.
(21:02):
Hey man, we're gonna we're gonna roll over to the
house right now. We've got some uh, you know, some
barbecue we want to get we want to throw down
or whatever it is. We've got some chicken we're gonna
throw on the grill. Just this you talked about they have.
They have such an issue roster wise, and this just
adds to the legend of you know, of desperation that
is the Cleveland Browns right now. It's a set, I mean,
(21:24):
just a sad story, it is. And it's like one
of those where you're like, maybe they're gonna get maybe
they have a plan to which they'll secretly get better,
and you're like, no, no, there's not, there's not really
not really, there's there's guys available out there and you're
at home, like, I mean whatever, you know, maybe you
could do it on your cell phone or you know,
(21:46):
maybe you're following it on Twitter as it breaks out too,
But for crying out loud, I mean, they are in
desperate need of a shot in the arm and some legitimate,
you know, legitimate quarterback. Come on, how many have they've
been through. I I can't even count how many they've
been through. And you've passed in the last couple of years.
You've passed on guys that can legitimately play in the
(22:06):
NFL because they're you know, they don't fit what you're
trying to do. I don't know what it is you're
trying to do. Obviously, it's it's not when football games
at this point. Great stuff. Mark Larras. You can see
him on Fox Sports one throughout all of our our
litany of shows of course, watch him called Games in
the NFL on Fox and you can hear him weekly
here on The Doug Gottlip Show. Stink. Thanks so much
for joining us. Do you guys? Do you take everybody? Pleasure?
(22:27):
Is absolutely mine? Have you guys seen Wendy Williams pass out?
Wendy Williams passed out live during her show and and look,
I'm I'm I Apparently she came back on and finished
the show. So again, this is like, because it's not
she didn't have it, doesn't I don't know if she
had a stroke or whatever. She appears to be okay,
(22:48):
she might just passed out, but I'm sorry, I think
it's hilarious. The look on her face. But but the
problem with it is the look on her face is
one of sheer pain. And today being Halloween, it's interesting.
I tweeted out earlier today and it's one of the
great tweets of my life. And I've had a lot
of great tweets, this is one of the great show
(23:08):
Let's bring in Dan Buyer. Um uh, Dan, here's the tweet,
and you tell me if you like it you don't
like it. Uh. The tweet is Halloween, where we celebrate
fake acts murders while getting offended by funny costumes. Generally
there's there's a I'm generally not offended by any of
the costumes, like these people who searched me it's Halloween.
(23:29):
Like you can, on one hand go like, oh Jason, Oh,
the Grim Reaper, Oh, that's amazing, right, Zombies and zombie
Apocalypse and people with hands that aren't attached to their body,
that's awesome, And then all of a sudden you're something
that somebody finds it like I just I don't know.
It's like one of those days, which I Like's just
I understand we search for things to be offended by.
(23:51):
I don't think today is the day in which you're
gonna be can be offensive outside of maybe like Charlie
Manson or a Hitler or somebody who's who's down right
just offensive to anybody. It's not funny anyway. Um So,
but but my one issue with Halloween is I generally
I do not like being scared. I just don't. I
(24:12):
don't like horror movies. We used to watch Halloween and
all the different Halloweens at my house, um after we
go trick or treating because we had it. We had
HBO when I was kids, and I couldn't sleep for
a week. I don't like which is weird. I love Halloween,
I don't like being scared. I know you don't like Halloween.
You I've never been a fan. And I'm kind of
with you with the scary movies. Horror movies. I don't
watch them. I have no idea. I know they've become
(24:35):
gosh what maybe the last ten years and even this year,
a lot of horror movies coming out that are really popular.
Never my thing. So I'm with you with the scary thing.
And uh, I don't know how you think about John
ramass sexy French maid costume that he wore today. But
I don't know if that's offensive or not. We're just
gonna have to deal with it for the next three
That the fact that he keeps standing by the by
(24:56):
the floor event so that his dress blows up a bit.
It's a nice, nice touch by John Rambos. We'll see
if the Dodgers have the magic Dutch tonight to force
a Game seven of the World Series. Game six of
the Fall Classic is on Fox. It is in l
A Astros and Dodgers, with Houston up three to Justin.
(25:17):
Verlander goes up against rich Hill. Temperatures yeah, a lot
cooler than they were just a week ago, So we'll
have to see how much that affects the baseball tonight.
NFL trade deadline comes up at the top of the hour.
Another deal done today. The Eagles acquired Dolphins running back
j J. I. E for a fourth round pick of
the teen draft. Philly GM Howie Roseman said that la
Garrett Blunt remains the team's starting quarterback. NFL Network says
(25:39):
that the Steelers won't trade wide receiver Martavis Bryant despite
the activating him for this past Sunday's game against the
Detroit Lions. While Broncos at coach Vance Joseph wouldn't commit
to quarterback Trevor Simeon being the team starter for Week
nine against the Eagles. Doug, you talked about the trades
in the NFL at the top of the hour, shaks
quarterback Russell Wilson reworking his deal to create that salary
cap space to acquire Dwayne Brown in that trade yesterday
(26:02):
from the Texans. No, no, no no, super super smart, right,
I mean, just super smart from Russell Wilson. You know
you need somebody who protects your your backside. We'll see
how well Dwayne Brown plays and how much that affects
the Seattle Seahawks have had that offensive line issue and
and Doug, would you look at what they've done and
acquiring Sheldon Richardson. You're thinking that the Seahawks. Now we're saying, okay,
(26:24):
now is now is our time? They gave up a
secondrom pick to the Jets in the draft. That's why
they had to give up the nineteen one to the Texans.
Seahawks maybe moving all in finding some room in that
NFC to make some noise and he els. Nope, Okay,
appreciate that. We'll get the game time. Go back to
Dan in a moment, Do you guys see the stat? Uh?
(26:47):
This is not good news of your Dodger fan. Justin
vir Lander he uh, let's see here. Justin vir Lander
has a one to one e r A with a
four and one record and struck out forty one in
(27:07):
overall in elimination games. Like he is, He's the He's
the ultimate closer. We talked about closers all the time,
and we so often think it's about bullpen guys. I mean,
he was dominant against the Yankees, been great against Yankees
in the playoffs. Four no record, two point three three
r A, forty one strikeouts, thirty two put in two
(27:29):
three innings. Um, it's it's going to be fascinating to
see exactly this is Ken date from Ken Davidoff's piece.
I saw a piece where his numbers are even better
in elimination games because he pitched at the end of
the Yankees series. Things like a point four one r
A in in elimination games like this is gonna be
fascinating because I almost feel like tonight's game, assuming it
(27:54):
goes off and it's not raining currently and it would
have to rain a lot from them to cancel this game,
and it just doesn't rain that much in southern California.
I think the Dodgers ramost. You may know this, haven't
They only ever had one game called because of rain,
and so since they moved to southern California, I think
there's been more than one, but it's not more than
like three or four. It's somewhere in that raine. It's
very very low for Dodging gains being rained out, so
(28:16):
more likely to play tonight. I have a staff for you, though, Doug.
The Dodgers are nine oh and leading up to eight. Okay, yeah,
I throw all the stats out. This is the most
unprectical series I've ever seen, so I know stats didn't
even mean anything anymore. Yeah, I mean, like, look, but
but Verlander versus rich Hill, you don't need the stats.
(28:38):
Who would you rather have? Who do you have more
confidence in? Justin Verlander? Okay? I think that the question becomes,
if you're the Dodgers, who's the second pitcher you go to?
I heard it might be Alex Wood tonight. And then
you go, what you darvish to start game seven? Yes?
Game seven? Be you darvish? That'll be correct? Yeah, I
think that makes sense with Alex Wood and he was
(28:58):
he was great against them. Um, now you go, that's
left hander to left hander. I don't love. That's the
one part I don't love, right, That's the one part
of it, which is you know what they set their
line up to a left handed pitcher, Well, then you
want to have a right handed pitcher come in. I'm
not sure anything really matters that, Like the Splits don't
see the matter against these guys. I kind of feel
(29:22):
like tonight's a must win for the Astros though, don't you?
I mean, do you think is that? Is that? All?
Music looked at me like I was absolutely crazy. I
just it's an elimination game for the Dodgers, but at
the dot. But if it goes to seven, I know
the Dodgers bullpen has been bad, is taxed, and it's
(29:44):
probably gonna have to get some They're gonna have to
get something out of it tonight in order to win.
I understand all of that. But the one thing that
Houston has in their pitching, in their pitching staff is Berlin.
That's their last card play. Their bullpen has not been good.
Like we make a huge deal about Ken Jansen, he
has he's gotten hit every time he's pitched for the Dodgers.
(30:05):
He's been hit in this series. In Game one, in
Game one, he was not. Sorry, in Game one, he
was not. Game one it was three hit three. So
except for game one, Game two they hit him, Game
four they hit him, Game five, they hit him right.
But like, where are they going? Are they going to
(30:27):
mc Color's right, that's like the colors you darvish and
in Dodger Stadium and no Verlander available. I don't think
that's really I don't think it's really close. And you
know you're gonna bring Kersh out of the bullpen. They'll
bring Kaiko out the bullpen too, I'm sure, but Kursch.
You know Kursch has pitched out of the bullpen in
these types of situations before. My my issue with I
(30:51):
get what you're saying, like this is the best set up,
the best matchup in terms of having Verlander on the
mound in this game, so you if you're the Astros
obviously to be able to capitalize and close it out.
I just don't see a situation where Game seven leans
heavily one way other than the Dodgers are at home.
Like if you had had if the way that it
(31:11):
lined up rotation, that's a big it's a big thing.
I don't see it as that as big of a
deal as like if they had Kershaw on the Mountain
Game seven, and so the way that the Astros have
been able to exploit the Dodgers bullpen, I just don't
see that much of a difference between the matchup in
(31:33):
Game seven versus tonight. The problem is that as much
as we're like, this is kind of what I was
getting at, as much as we are crushing the Dodgers bullpen,
can we realize the Astros bullpen has been worse, absolutely
has been just worse, right, Like, uh um Ken myda
you know, was awful, but he was previous to that,
(31:54):
he was actually good stripling as at moments where he's good.
More is that they haven't how they had any moments
where their bullpen has been good. They just haven't. They
just out hit the Dodgers in the games in which
they won, you know, Game two, in Game five, they
just out hit them game Game three as well. But
it's not like their bullpen has been stellar in this thing,
(32:15):
not in any way, you know, go back and like
just look at this last Just go look at this
last game in which um uh Gregorson came in for
one batter. MQ was awful, right, MCE two innings, gave
up three earned runs. Peacock has been good in spots,
but he appeared to hit the wall last time around.
(32:37):
Harris has been hit recently. H Davinsky, who they wanted
to have close it. The interesting thing was like, here's
where a J. Hinch is getting to pass. Obviously he's
moved on from Giles as his closer, but he even
used Giles last night. What was he saving Giles for
last game? I'm not really sure. So uh kind of
fast must Grove was actually pretty pretty good. Little shaky
(33:00):
me got hit hard. Justin Turner hit a ball that
was an absolute rocket. It was just right at the
left fielder. So I'm just not sure that there's anybody
the Astros really have a ton of faith in. They're
just like, look, Justin Verlank can go like a pitches.
That's what we're riding with, and that's probably gonna be enough.
It's probably enough. We only give up three runs last
(33:21):
time around. Matt Holliday'll join us next hour. We'll get
his thoughts on the importance of Houston closing this thing
out tonight, but up coming next, we'll play a little
game called what are the Chances? Like? What are the
chances that rich Hill lasts longer than four innings? In
tonight's game, I'll tell you next, sleep on a Casper
and you'll pick it over every mattress you've ever had.
(33:44):
Test it yourself for a hundred nights risk free. Go
to Casper dot com use the code Gottlieb g O

five dollars. That's Casper dot Com code is Gottlieb. Minimum
purchase requires ceatiper details. Terms of conditions apply. Doug Gotlib Show,
Fox Sports Radio. I will explain to the world why
(34:12):
some Halloween costumes that are deemed defensive are inoffensive. Inoffensive.
It's a very, very very because nobody actually knows what
Many people don't know what the hell they're talking about.
Get to that after we play a game. Okay, this
is game time side on the Doug Gottlieb Show, Dan By,
(34:39):
all right, today on this Halloween edition, we have the chances.
What are the chances? Let's see what we've got to here.
A Doug, what are the chances that Dodgers starting pitcher
Richill lasts more than four innings in tonight's Games six
of the World Series. I'm gonna say it's about eight
in ten. Uh. Their bullpen is totally taxed. He didn't
do a ton of pitches and uh Richell wasn't one
(35:01):
terrible through four innings. I think if I had to
go over under, I would go over on the four innings.
I'm gonna go what percente I say before? I be
interesting to see you and if there's any trouble on
how much Dave Roberts reacts or doesn't react at all.
Moving to the NFL, Doug, what are the chances we
(35:22):
see another name player get dealt before the NFL trade
trade deadline, which comes up at the top of the hour. Uh,
do you say NFL player? NFL start just just the
name player? You know, somebody that have names? Dan, I
had to be a name, you know, Yeah, I just
I just want to point out. I want to make
sure I get the right percentage here. Um see why
(35:42):
Hilton's name has been thrown out there. I would say
he's a name. I would say, so the the Uh
some say Josh Josh Gordon, Um who's uh who apparently
is in New York potentially to be reinstated by the NFL.
I would say, there's uh nine in ten chance that
a name player will be traded in the next ten minutes.
(36:06):
The trade would be consummated the next ten lets. We
might not hear about it for another hour. Yes, Frank
Gore's name with the Colts as well being tossed around.
The Steelers say that Mark Tavis Bryant won't be traded,
that he's been told he's a part of their future plans,
which is somewhat surprising, but maybe not surprising if you
think about what his trade value would be. Um Brocco's
aid coach Vance Joseph wouldn't say today who would start
(36:26):
a quarterback for them this Sunday. So, Doug, what are
the chances that the head coach actually makes a quarterback
change for Week nine against the Philadelphia Eagles. I think
it's nine in ten. Also think chance. I think it's
at some point you just lose faith in the guy
because he appears to be shook at this point in
his career. They have to They don't have one, they
have two options. There brock oswild an option, and so
(36:47):
is Paxton Lynch. I think it's a nine intention and
Paxton Lynches situation, Joseph said today not realistic for him
to start this Sunday because he's still coming back from
that shoulder injury. So if they do make a change,
it would be brock Oswilder going against the Eagles coming
up on Sunday. Of course, the Eagles got j J
I e Earlier today, a Texans spokesperson says that Jadeveon
(37:08):
Clowney's Halloween costume was not a shot at owner Bob McNair. So, Doug,
what are the chances that the Texans defensive end purposely
wore a prisoner costume to a Halloween party and was
taking a shot at the team's owner. To Intend, Yeah,
I think to to Intend to Intend, I think it's chance.
(37:29):
I'm gonna take Jadeveon Clowney at his word that had
nothing to do with the recent comments, because I'm guessing, Um,
I'm guessing that that thing was purchased well beforehand, right
like it would have to be purchased here in the
last couple of days. And I just don't know if
you have time going to Seattle, coming back going to
a party on it was the party was on a
(37:50):
Monday night. Yeah, I don't I don't see it. I
don't see it, don't see it. I think it was
to intend. It was pretty realistic because it was an
orange jump suit as well. You don't see a lot
of stripe anymore. It's more orange than anything like the
old the old costumes that you would see. Whatever I'm
trying to think was that was he trying to be
uh uh what was the I think he was going
(38:11):
as Orange is the New Black. I think that's going
or Connie was Connie where they were an orange and Conye.
I can't remember John Ramos. You want a movie, guy, say,
we're in Origin Connor with John Q second John Malkovich.
But also also what's the what's the black dude who
play Debot with the crazy eyes. Um, he's in that.
(38:34):
He's in that movie in an orange jumpsuit. I don't remember,
I think of it. Go ahead, that's all right, we'll
wrap up with this. What is it? What's his name?
Tom Lister Jr? Tom Lister Jr. Huh sure no, uh? Well,
Being Raimes also was in that movie too, I know,
Being Raimes is not the one with the crazy eyes,
but he could have been playing Bing Bing Raimes. What
(38:55):
movie are we talking about, Connie? Okay, I've never seen it.
What are the chances you ever seen hun Air? I
told you I'm not a movie guy, just not not
my thing. Never seen it? Yeah, who wants two hours
of awesome entertainment where you laugh? You try? You can
get four episodes of the King of Queens in that time.
That's all I'm saying. What are the chances, Doug? There
will be Halloween candy left over at your house tonight?
(39:17):
I guess this goes for the entire zero point zero.
My wife leaves it out, leaves it out, and she'll
leave a sign said, take one, it is gone. It
has gone. My wife did a great job in buying candy,
except there was one one thing she did wrong. She
bought a bag with Whoppers in it. So I'm thinking
that we may be stuck with whoppers, or we'll just
give them to all the other kids. Not a Whoppers fan,
you're a bad candy house. That's just one good research
(39:46):
I used to tell the story all the time. You
people are concerned why they're dog getting into candy my
wife always the end of the night, turns off the lights,
leaves a sign only take one. Uh. This is about
six seven years ago. I heard rustling around downstairs outside
our door to candy always, like, would you go down
and tell his teenagers start stop fighting over the candy.
My beast town had gotten into the candy, and we
(40:06):
furiously looked at on the internet and it takes like
two pounds of chocolate to kill a dog, so whatever
it was, it wasn't enough. The dog lived. Anyway, we'll
talk to some Halloween costumes and why some deemed defensive
are not next in the Doug Golip Show, What Up
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, Happy Halloween to you.
(40:28):
Reese's Peanut our Cups is the greatest candy ever. Don't
at me, don't at me? Um. I prefer my chocolate dark,
especially with little sea salt in it. Mm hmm. But
just because you like like this is nonsensical. Discussion about
(40:50):
what candy is better than another candy is like what
shows you've been what Binge watched right are better than
other shows that other people Binge watched. The great thing
about our country is we will all call actively get
diabetes at some point in time, because we all have
a sugar addiction. Whether you get diabetes faster than I do,
slower than you do, don't brag about it. Ramo's favorite
(41:12):
candy is what three Musketeers. You don't hear that often
three Musketeers. Ryan Music favorite candy is what I'll go
with Reese's Reese's Pieces or Reese's Peter butter cups. Okay,
you do one of those. Justin's the organic all natural lips,
those are good as well. Um. Dan Buyer favorite candy
(41:35):
is what I'm a sucker for toffee. So for Halloween candy,
give me a good old heath Bar, little heath bar.
Heath Bar is very good. That's an outstanding. Uh. Um.
Here's a here's a question to you. What is black face?
Where's black face? Ryan Music? What is black face? When
(41:55):
you're a white person and you dress up as some
one of color and paint your face black? Okay, that
is the common the common thought. Ramos, do you agree disagree?
I would agree with that point of view from Ryan Music.
Jan Buyers do you agree with that? Yeah, I'm good
with what Ryan. All three of you are wrong. All
(42:17):
three of you are incredibly wrong, and it's okay because um,
I only happen to know this, and and look, part
of this show is you'll get to know about me
and my my past and my family in my life.
So I grew up in southern California, my dad, who
was a New Yorker, and it was kind of an
older soul really, he's born nine forty. But he loved
(42:37):
not on a big band music, but old time radio.
And so when he got out of college coaching and
became my AU coach, in order to get an AU
team to compete against the best ones in Los Angeles,
we had to get players in San Diego. We have
players in Bakersfield, we have players in Compton, We had
players all over. And he picked me up from school.
I'd opened up my homework and we listen to sports
(42:57):
radio le Hack saw Hamilton's from San Diego. And then
when that when we'd stop listening to that, we listen
to old time radio, Burns and Allen the Bickersons. If
you don't you don't know any of it's fine. But
he would also listen to old time big band music,
and he taught me about people like Al Jolson. Al
Jolson famously saying the song Mammy in black face. Black
(43:20):
face is not getting dressed up as a black person.
Black Face is a specific character and a caricature of
black people, which, of course, uh is incredibly demeaning towards
black people, in which they would the actors or singers
would speak in an uneducated verses. They would paint their
(43:41):
facing entirely black and then their lips white, and they
would sing songs that were both in the tone and
context and rhythms of Black America or how white America
viewed Black America back in the nineteen twenties and nineteen thirties.
That's what black face is. Black face, Okay, black face
(44:05):
by my estimation, even if you were trying to be
Al Jolson playing Mammy and nail it and ring the
doorbell and say mommy right, that would be offensive. But
getting dressed up as Colin Kaepernick or my son favorite
favorite football player is Oldell Beckham Jr. And if he
was to if he was to go soul man and
(44:26):
darken his skin and get dressed up as Odell Beckham Jr.
That is not black face. That is getting dressed up
as a black person. It is different. There's a differentiation there,
but this is one of our issues. And look, you
guys aren't the only ones like that's it's a Twitter thing,
it's a social media thing. It's like, we don't I've
(44:49):
my kids apparently have a really good history teacher and
they're learning about Mesopotamian. I like, but it's really important
that you learned about history, so you know these historical reference.
You know these historical references. Not knowing the details, not
knowing the past, is part of what makes us overreact
(45:12):
to the present. Case in point, the Ezekie Elliott thing.
Okay um. On Monday night, Judge Catherine Polka, I'm gonna
go with fail or yell for I don't know, I'm
gonna go fair, dissolved the temporary the t r O
(45:35):
blocking the suspension of Ezeki Elliott, clearing the way for
a six game banishment on Tuesday morning, and interesting fact
emerge regarding the person whom Elliott's case was assigned. The
judicial questionnaire signed by the judge in June of two
twelve includes a statement and commitment. My husband is a
(45:55):
partner at a law firm Um pro Sker rose LLLP.
I would recuse myself from any cases in which prosker
Rose is a party of representing party. Prosker Rose wasn't
representing the NFL in the Elliott case, but a prominent
prosker Rose attorney was heavily involved in negotiation the labor
deal that ultimately was an issue in the Elliott's case,
(46:18):
Bob Batterman Lockout. Bob became a key and sometimes notorious
figure in the months leading up to the two thousand
eleven workstop. Its YadA, YadA, YadA. So it is interesting
that the judge judge's husband was part of a law
firm which helped decide the c b A. Some of
(46:40):
that's interesting historically, but maybe the most interesting historical reference
comes from Jerry Jones, who's Dallas Cowboys feel wronged by
Ezeki Elliott's suspension for something that never went to trial.
He was never charged with. And the more you investigate,
you start to think, Hold on a second, Hold on
(47:01):
a minute. I don't like women being abused any any
less than anyone else does. I find it disgusting and
disgraceful that a man would put his hands on a woman.
On the other hand, when you hear this woman's story
and you start to hear some of the holes in
not just her story, but some of the credibility of
(47:22):
other stories to which she has put out there. You
read the text messages, the things that she said to
police officers, the changing your stories, you start to scratch
your head and go a house strong in this case, Actually,
history is important. Jerry Jones knows it. Take a listen
to what he said on a Dallas radio station. I'm
sure he'd like to take back his initial ray Rice
(47:45):
dance and a few others, and he's in the process
of having tried to correct that and in doing so.
Zeke is a victim of an over correction. Zeke is
a victim of an overcorrection. It's very, very important to
understand a couple of things. Um, we don't just have
(48:06):
to remember the fact that ray Rice happened during Roger
Goodell's watch. It's also fair to point out that Roger
Goodell suspended ray Rice for two games, which seems like
a really light suspension when you see the video, but
he had not apparently seen the video, and that at
the time was the longest suspension anybody had ever been
(48:28):
given based upon a domestic violence case ever in the
history of the league, and it wasn't by anybody's account enough,
especially when the video came out. Then they suspended it
for h Then then he was on the the Commissioner's
exemple list and he was suspended for six games, and
there was a Greg Hearty thing. The point is that
(48:52):
this is, I think, by all accounts, in over correction.
I think that Tom Brady suspension was an over correction, right.
The league mad about the Patriot It's feeling like the
Patriots had gotten away with stuff in the past, feeling
like the Patriots had to be up to something. You
over suspend. Knowing that also in fairness is how many
of the suspensions that have been levied by the NFL
(49:12):
have been reduced, including Greg Hardy's suspension was reduced in
the courts. So uh, look, I think history is super important,
incredibly important. I love learning about histories of war, although
some recently later yesterday trying to change how we view
(49:33):
the history of the Civil War. Um, but I think
you have to take a breath and and I do
think that Jerry Jones, that was an interview on one
of five point three the Fan, I think that's a
reasonable stance to take. Is that look, Roger Goodell is
paying still paying for Ray Rice and for the Greg
Hardy thing. And oh yeah, by the way, I frankly
(49:54):
think that Jerry Jones is paying for the Greg Hardy thing.
Jerry Jones got to me, who's suspended for fifteen games
on the commissioner's exemple list. Then he gets to be
suspended for ten games That styaled back, I think the
six games, and then they play him like you know,
now he's being punished for a player that he signed
and stood by but never rehabilitated himself and is now
(50:17):
out of the NFL. All of us are paying penance
for the past. And here's one other point about this is, um,
the Dallas Cowboys are upset at the Commissioner's power. The
commissioner's power, because the commissioner has this autonomous power and
(50:42):
it's fascinating. Um, it's super fastinating. Unlike federal judges before her,
the judge rejected most of those claims, backed by the
NFL's contention that it followed the Collective Barden Agreement in
suspending Zekil Elliott and that those procedures were supported by
the federal labor law. Having negotiated with the NFL over
(51:04):
the terms of the of a particular c BA. The
NFL has an interest in obtaining the benefit of its bargain,
an interest that might well be eroded if the courts,
such as this one permitted to micromanage the disciplinary decisions
of the commissioner. Listen when you I know, it's super
easy when you get your Apple Update. You guys have
(51:25):
the Apple Update on your phone. I don't think it
worked like the first three day. Everybody know the gout.
It was like, this thing is glitchy the first three
days and outworks fine. It's a little bit, but when
you get it, Like, does anybody read the Apple agreement?
Has anybody ever read the agreement? Like? No, When you
sign up for a credit card, even if it's in
the airport, like hey, free flight, Like free flight, I'm in.
You sign up when you buy your first house. You
(51:48):
buy a house, like a mortgage agreement. Oh my god,
the stack is like this high. I'm one of the guys, Like,
just send it to me on docu sign I'll press
the button a couple of times and I'll sign it.
Nobody reads the fine print, including NFL teams like the
Dallas Cowboys. They're like, look, he's overstepping the bounds. And
this the judge is like, actually, this falls right in
(52:08):
line with the collective bargn agreement. The commissioner has the
right to suspend him, has the right to hear the appeal.
And if we were to micro manages the court speaking,
if we were to micro manage that decision, the entirety
of the agreement in the collective bargaining agreement. Remember, this
(52:29):
has agreed to by the NFL's owners and by the
players union. If we say, you know that agreement null
and void, then the entire agreement is nullenvoid. Always read
the fine print. Always read the fine print, Always know
(52:50):
the history. Matt Holiday joins the show up coming next,
I'll get his thoughts on how important this game is
not just to the Dodgers, but to the Astros. And
after rich Hill, where do you go? Because the one
(53:10):
thing we count on is rich Hill is not going
the distance? Right, Like, that's one of these I would
bet my life on. That's a figure of speech, by
the way, figure speech that I'm coming next. But first
I gotta tell you I've been sleeping on this Casper

all these magical thoughts and stats just come out of
my head. It's because I sleep great on my Casper mattress.
(53:31):
You switching to a Casper should be a no brainer.
It's high quality mattress and a more affordable price. And
the best part is you ever get hot and uncomfortable
when you sleep? I don't because I sleep on a Casper,
cool and comfortable on Casper's too high tech foams, much
better than those old, overpriced mattresses I used to have.
They sent it right to your house in a box.

(54:44):
to Bad Holiday in a moment, we have breaking news
in the NFL. Let's go to Dan dot Breaking news
from Fox Sports. Dan, what was my percented chance that
a big that a name player. You said a name
players traded in the NFL before the trad It was
your guests and we are cashed in ESPN saying that
(55:05):
Calvin Benjamin has been traded by the Carolina Panthers to
the Buffalo Bills. The news was first reported by ESPN.
No word on what the Panthers would get in return
for the wide receiver who was ben cam Newton's favorite
target Once Greg Olson went out, Remember brand, Remember Brandon
Bean is their general manager. Brandon came from the Carolina Panthers.
There's the elephant, there's the the elephant room, the rabbi
(55:28):
in the room, and of course Sean McDermott, their head coach,
is really their general manager of president football operations, also
came from Carolina, so they are they are big fans
of Calvin Benjamin, even if the new general manager of
the Carolina Panthers is not. Also, the NFL Network is
reporting that the NFL Players Association trying to take that
(55:48):
next step to file an appeal on the ruling that
was made yesterday putting Zekiel Elliott six games suspension back in.
A ruling could be made Mike tomorrow to find out
if Zeke actually will have to serve the six games
suspension or if it will remain on hold. But that
going down within the last twenty minutes. This is interesting though.
On the on the Kelvin Benjamin thing. I'm sure you'll
have Dan, I appreciate appreciate you with that. With that update, Uh,
(56:11):
Dan'll join us again here in about eight minutes. We'll
get more on it. Maybe by then we'll we'll learn
exactly what was given up for Calvin Benjamin. Of course,
um have knee injury a couple of years ago, did
come into camp fairly heavy and but they're they're playing
without without Greg Olsen as well. Those are the two
favorite targets before Christian McCaffrey came around for Cam Newton.
(56:34):
But what does this mean for Cam Newton? Or what
does this mean for the Panthers? Are they um? Are
they deciding let's pack it in for the year or
is there another move that they're gonna try and make. Fascinating?
What a crazy trade that We never talk NFL trade deadline.
There's nothing. It's always the least the hot stove league
(56:54):
in baseball, and trade deadline and even post waiver trade
deadline in baseball always more interesting than anything else. Case
some point, justin Verlander pitching tonight for the Astros. Of course,
when the Dodgers got you Darvish before the trade deadline,
they had to make a decision Verlander or Darvish. They
chose Darvish and the Astros many people believed wouldn't have
(57:15):
gone after Verlander had they gotten Zack Britten before the
original trade deadline. From the Orioles, your has decided to
not move their closer. We usually talk about that, we
don't talk about NFL stuff, And now we've seen, Uh,
that's the fourth true starter. We've seen move. There's some
other cornerbacks, nickel guys have been moved forth good solid player.
J h I moved, Dayne Brown moved, Jimmy Garoppolo, who
(57:38):
will be a starting quarterback with the forty niners. And
now Kevin Bellett Benjamin All traded. Wow, let's turn a
major League baseball. Matt Holliday joints a seven time All Star,
four times Silver Slugger, and Matt what Verlander going tonight? Obviously?
Uh I thought, and I think anybody who thinks about
big partners. Point in the series was Game two, when
(58:01):
you know Verlander leaves and he's down three to one.
If Verlandard doesn't beat, you feel like it's a pretty
good chance you win the series. How do you think
he pitched in Game two? You know, I thought he
pitched pretty well, but not as dominant like as I
had seen in the series before against US. UM I
didn't think It's slider um had he had the bite
(58:22):
and the sharpness um that it that it had against
against US in the in the a LCS. So um
I I thought he was good, obviously, but not um
as unhitable US. I didn't think his pattern to Ridees
was was as crisp, and and that he wasn't locating
that comeback fastball in the outside corner rights and then
(58:44):
able to kind of break his slider off off the
same line, and and and be able to split that
outside corner to right. He's as good as he did
against us and into our big right hand hitters. So, um,
I think whether you blame it on the slick baseballs
or what you know, or maybe just to have quite
as good a night as he had in the previous
nine or ten starts, eventually, uh, you're gonna have a
(59:07):
start where it's not as good. I mean, he's been
on such a crazy good run that you had to
think at some point one of his pitches was gonna
be gonna be off a little bit. And I felt
like he was off a little bit, but obviously still
kept him in the game. Is it is Is it
as simple for those of us layman to see Layman's seat,
sit and watch and go right if if if they're
(59:28):
setting up in one spot and he's consistently not in
the first couple innings not hitting that spot that he
doesn't that is that the easiest way for us determine
that he doesn't have his normal stuff. Yeah, I think so.
I think if you watch the reacting from from from
Hitters on the slidder, I think early you'll know whether
or not he's got that good sladder. You know, whether
(59:49):
or not um, they're going to have to really respect
that pitch as as something um you'll you'll see by Hitterson. Actually,
I think how sharp as Slader is obviously is location
of his fastball is kind of an easy watch too.
If he's able to locate the fastball down and then
they're down in a way to ride that kind of
comes back on the outside corner, that kind of sets
(01:00:10):
up the slidder. The same thing with a fastball in
the left easy. He likes to kind of run that
hip shot your hip and run it back over the
inside corner to the left eas and then keep you'll
break his slider back foot, you know, backfoot slider and
so the ball looks like a thin side and then
it's you know, inside corn has gone. Um. I think
those are his two favorite patterns um for pitching. And
(01:00:33):
and he he's got enough weapons and uses curveball is
change up to get guys out. But I think that's
his he has been his recipe for success. Uh, in
the last corner of the season, however long he's going
with the astro. That's Matt Holiday, New York Yankees, who
of course is the seven time All Star, four time
Silver Slugger and join us throughout the Major League Baseball
(01:00:55):
World Series as Game six is tonight on Fox. Then
you have Rich Hill, who, uh you pointed out before,
like stuff's not great, right, Like it's not it's not Virlay,
it's not Kershaw, it's not you Darvish, just not the
elite caliber stuff. But but did you think at that
moment in time, did you think that Dave Roberts got
(01:01:17):
him too early when you're only throwing sixty pitches through
four innings. You know, I think that that's been their
mL with him and not letting him face the third
third time through. But I think his numbers against the
third time through or there's some of the best in baseball, which, uh,
you know, I think could could change their mind tonight.
I think obviously if they're in a different scenario as
(01:01:38):
far as they're bull being bullpend being rested. I think
game two you're feel real good about, you know, kind
of the wear and tear of your bullpen based upon
the fact that they had four or five more games
the Astra and everybody's rested and ready, and you know,
you kind of can't wait to get him into the
game because that's been the recipe for success to this point.
So I think they're in a much different place right
(01:01:59):
now because their bullpen is taxed, and I'm not sure
who the first guy out of their bullpen is. If
you can take rich Hill out in the fourth inning,
I mean you go right to King to made again,
or do you pitch your potential game five or seventh
starter and would is that your first guy out of
the bullpen? So it'll be interesting to see. I think
they ride they ride rich Hill as long as it's
(01:02:20):
it's a one or two run situation where you're giving
up one or two. I think they try to ride
him closer into the sixth inning this time than they
did the first time, where they were eager to get
to the arrested uh you know weapon that they they
felt like was their bullpen. So I think that's that's
how I look at tonight. So they're they're there their starter, Okay,
So who do you go to if you're Dave Roberts, Like, again,
(01:02:42):
I think most of us know you have to have feel.
You can't just but like, assuming it's the fifth inning,
do you go Alex would? Like the bullpen is gas
Gas you is supposed to start game seven, so like right,
So my thought is like, do don't you go? You
Darvish because he's your best pitcher, But that doesn't appear
(01:03:03):
to be their plan. I mean, do you go Alex
would but a lefty to a lefty and neither with
spectacular stuff. What do you think? I think if you
have a lead, don you dar Wish to brids the gap?
I think, um as good as Wood pitched as a
you know, as a starter. I think if you have
to pitch him in game seven, because you kind of
took the shot to win in game six, Um, you
(01:03:25):
have to get to game seven. You have to win
game six to get the game seven. So man, if
you have to take if you have to take out
Hill earlier, I and you're still gotta you know, I
think you go to Darvish. I would, but again, um
I don't. I don't know. I mean we'll see, but
I think they're bullpen is so tax that that my
(01:03:46):
my first Inkling will be to go to Darvish. I'm
with you, Um, what about the Astros? You know, there's
obviously a ton of pressure on the Dodgers. You're going
against Verlander, uh and Verlanders is one of those guys
that when he gets it going, he can go a
hundred twenty pitches deep and still be effective. But is
there the is this do you feel like a must
(01:04:07):
win for them? To you and stick with you for
a second, Like, look, if you go to game seven,
it's all hands on deck. And as much as the
Dodgers bullpen has been wildly disappointing in his gas, the
Houstern Astros bullpen is bad and is also gassed, And like,
I don't know, you have Lance mccolors and stead Like
I don't think they have an answer in Game seven.
(01:04:28):
I almost feel like this is all in for the
Houston Astros tonight. Yeah. I think the home team, if
they're able to win games six takes a huge momentum.
We had it in two thousand eleven when we won
that huge Game six and then almost Game seven almost
feels like a given. You know, I think you have
all the momentum after winning this Game six and You're
(01:04:49):
rolling into a do or night situation, your home field,
with your home crowd, with all the momentum. So I
think this does feel a lot like a must win
for the Astros. You've got your horse on the mound
out a guy that you know, you you like, you
said you're gonna let him throw a hundred pitches maybe more,
and and and hope that that that's enough. Um, I'd
(01:05:09):
be interesting to see if they use the Colors out
of the bullpens and night. I mean who who do
they go to? And even in a closing situation, I
don't know who they go to? And and so I
think it'll be interesting to see because like you said,
I mean they're they're all in for this game. I
think this sets up for them as good as as
their possible scenario can be. So, uh, if if Berlander
(01:05:32):
is is in a little bit of trouble in the
sixth inning, is that the Colors that gets up or
or who do they go to? Do they go to
Davinski and ride him out? Um? I don't know. I
think that that they play They play this one as
if it's a mustlan and I think they go to
the Colors right on top of orlander if it's if
it's anything earlier than than the eighth innings. Last thing
(01:05:53):
we've talked to weather patterns before. This is the complete
opposite style of weather as we saw in Game one
and maybe a little bit game too at Dodger Stadium.
That was hot, that was dry. This is kind of moist, overcast, uh,
southern California kind of fall weather. It will be about
sixty degrees at game time. It will be about humidity
(01:06:14):
most of the game. Uh, chance of a little bit
of sprinkles, no real wind. What does that do to
the baseball? Yeah, I think it's much more pictures friendly, UM.
And always noticed that a chili night and the stadium
um with with the heavy air. I think it's it's
a it's definitely it goes from more of a neutral
(01:06:34):
um in a one day hit her friendly on a
hot day, and I think what would be considered a
chili dame southern California. I think it's it's much more
picture friendly, UM. But I don't think that that means,
you know, necessarily there won't be home runs. But I
do think it's it's a it's a star contrast to
to what you saw in game one and Game two
where uh, you know, the first pitch of the game
(01:06:56):
for the Dodgers is hit almost on top of the
roof um from Chris Taylor. I don't think you'll see
any balls hit like that, but I think it's it's
it's more more neutral about the picture friendly on it
on a day like today. All right, man, listen, enjoy
you guys, use trick or treating first and then come
back watching the gather. I guess your East your East
Coast time zones. You've got plenty of time to do it.
(01:07:17):
It's hardier West West Coast is like, man, how do
you do the trick or treating thing when the game
starts just after five o'clock on Fox? Yeah, I think
you send uh, send MoMA out with the kids and
you know, relax and play. I'll text you have have Leslie,
text Angie, what what do you got on? It's a bench?
Cam dudn't like I mean, if they traded their number
(01:07:38):
one receiver and Cam ninj your fantasy quarterback, which it's
been a little frustrating. What what am I doing there?
You know what? Honestly, like I've had Alex Smith is
like my backup quarterback all year and he keeps putting
up numbers. I think you consider moving out now that
The one thing is that without wide receivers, does that
mean Cam becomes even more of a running threat and
(01:07:59):
runs runs it in? But yeah, I don't know what
what's your backup option? Is it a two quarterback lead
one quarterback? What he got arterback league? Um, I have
the guy from the Bills, Hyrod Taylor. Yeah, and he's
you know, he's an eighteen to twenty point guy pretty consistently.
But Cam's got that threat of putting up forty five
(01:08:21):
every week. But he also not afraid to mix in
a nine. Uh. So I've been, I've been, I've just
road Cam out. But if it's Calvin Benjamin and they
lost their tied end, and man, I don't know. Who
have to see what you're gonna have to You have
to go see what's on the waiver wire and and
see really, uh, you know, he's been pretty good for me,
(01:08:43):
has been. Dak Prescott has been pretty good for me
as well. He also he'll run in one occasionally. Um, obviously, Look,
but look, you're you're in the league now where I'm
guessing somebody had everything all in on Aaron Rodgers. Like
Aaron Rodgers is probably a top five pick, and so
if some some of it might depend on who you're
who you're playing against. See. Yeah, and there's not a
ton on the way every where. Everybody's got chaired now
with the you know, the awful weeks, so there's not
(01:09:05):
there's not much out there. Well get get get to
work on that before you get to Halloween. Thanks for
joining us. That's Matt Holiday, Avid fantasy football player and
of course friend of the fo D friend of Doug
and uh joined us as our Major League Baseball analysts
throughout the show. It's get Dan Buyer back in here.
For people who are just joining us, I feel like, um,
(01:09:27):
David Stern us tells us, we have a trade, but
this has happened a bunch of times. Whatever you want
to go through, Dan, go through because you only have
so much time, right, Yeah, I can, I can do
it in David stern like a commissioner, voices how he
would announce, it's whatever you want to do. The Carolina
Panthers have traded wide receiver Calvin Benjamin to the Buffalo
Bills for a third round in seventh round pick NFL
(01:09:53):
Draft sorry, that's what they do to David SERMONI is
a comissioner anyway. That was the deal that went down,
as multiple reports say. It went just minutes before the
four o'clock Eastern time trade deadline. Calvin Benjamin on his
way from Carolina to Buffalo. Not the only trade of
the day. The Eagles acquired Dolphins running back j J. I.
E for a fourth round pick in the teen draft.
(01:10:13):
Philly GM Howie Roseman said La Garrett Blunt remains the
teams starting running back. Attorneys for Cowboys running back Ezekiel
Elliott filed the motion asking for a stay on the
six games suspension. Another game of court, Doug, as we
await to see if the six games suspension will actually
start in week nine. His attorneys have asked for a
ruling by seven o'clock Eastern time on Wednesday, appealing or
(01:10:35):
asking for the motion on the injunction so they can
appeal the ruling that occurred yesterday they put the suspension
back into place. Hope I'm not confusing everyone. Giants corner
Genorris Jenkins has been suspended for Sunday's game against the
Rams for violating team rules. Reports say he didn't show
up the team facilities yesterday, where the Giants were expected
to report coming back from by in week eight. Don't
(01:10:55):
show up for work, right work, you said a game
I do with the youth team. You don't go to practice,
you don't play, simple as that. So Genori's Jenkins won't
play against the Rams, Carlino said. Coach Bruce Arian says
he doubts David Johnson returns to this season, and tonight
it's Game six of the World Series Astros and Dodgers.
You'll see it on Fox coverage at seven thirty Eastern time. Um,
(01:11:16):
did did the guy from black Sports Online? Did he
troll me or troll you? Ryan? Exactly what happened there? Well,
it doesn't. It's not him. I know you guys have
gotten to it in the past. It's because because listen,
his his sight can give you some really good like
social stuff like dudes dating a chicken she you know,
put he slid into her somebody else's d m s
(01:11:38):
and he put it out there like I'm not gonna
crush this site as a guy I've never met, I
don't know, and he's but it wasn't It wasn't him,
But he does he does do the everything is racial
sort of thing, like this guy's a racist, that guy's
a racist, this guy's everybody's a racist. What it was
is um. A listener of the show tweeted at the
(01:12:00):
article he already posted, saying that this is something that
you were referencing and I was trying to clarify that
had nothing to do with it. So the post from
black Sports Online was, Uh. South Dakota State Cole Paulson
wanted attention for black face and mocking Colin Kaepernick. So
black face that is? That is? That is not black face?
(01:12:20):
If he say will stand for money, it's making fun
of Colin Kaepernick. Right, do we do have any doubt
that's making fun of Colin Kaepernick. No, that's making fun
of Colin Kaepernick. Absolutely, Okay, Colin Kaepernick is a public figure.
That's that's not And Colin Kaepernick is is black. I
don't consider that like black faces like black Like google
black face if you will, and you will see exactly
(01:12:43):
what black face looks like. And it's now if he's
if he was, if he was mocking black people based
upon how they speak, or I don't know, it's just
completely different. Um, black face is a form of theatrical
makeup used predominantly by non black performers to represent a
(01:13:05):
black person, but it's usually back back in the uh
In the from the eighteen hundreds all the way to
the early nineteen hundreds, black face would be offensive. But
imitating Colin Kaepernick, who's the most famous protester in America.
(01:13:25):
It's Halloween, dude, Halloween, ramos, Am I wrong? Am I right?
You tell me you have a very good balance about you. Um,
I think you're right. I think you have. You kind
of think a lot of things out before you say things,
So I'm gonna go with what you I'm also, I'm
also I would also warn people like I'm just not
(01:13:48):
easily offended. I'm just not I lack that gene to
which I really you know, give a you know what,
give a rip, because I think in real life we
bust you each other's chops and we make fun of
each other, like we make fun of people, like we
make fun of the fact that you're so that I've
I've been here for six months. I heard last year
(01:14:10):
year soccerty didn't win a game. You've only won one
game this year. We make fun of your coaching actorman
and at nausea I make fun of. Now, maybe that's
has nothing to do with race, religion, or whatever. I
don't think this is even making fun of You're not
making fun of Colin Kaepernick's race. You're just dressing up
like Colin Kaepernick. You are Callin Kaepernick. That's what you
(01:14:30):
do on Halloween. You pick out a person, you dressed
like the person you want to make fun of that person.
That's fine. That is not an indictment of entire race
of people. If you're doing something that's an indictment of
entire race of people, that would be deem defense. I
pretty much like, I'm trying to think there's anybody else like, Ah,
(01:14:51):
I think Hitler, I think uh, white supremacist. I'm trying
to think who else mm hmmm huh. But there's very
few people that I would deem they're just even getting
dressed as those as characters would be offensive on Halloween,
(01:15:11):
especially considering like when we were kids, ad Jason May
you can still rock at Jason mask, right, be Jason
Myers with Michael Michael Myers. Sorry Michael Myers, Like somehow
that's not offensive. When Michael Myers was a mass murderer
or Freddie Krueger was a mass murderer. Albeit in the
movie It's Make Believe. The whole night is make Believe.
(01:15:32):
I also didn't think that was a very good outfit. Right.
If you're gonna make fun of Colin kaeperniy, you gotta
get the jersey dude here. Jersey dude got a pony
up and pay it. Colin Coward thinks Bill Belichick is
headed towards retirement? How did he make that deduction? Kind
of interesting? You'll hear it next. What True Car? You
(01:15:58):
can find out what other people in your area paid
for the same car you're looking for, new or used.
Visit True Car to enjoy more confident car buying experience.
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Will tonight be the
last base Major League Baseball game until April? Till April?
(01:16:19):
We'll find out in a mirror couple of hours on
Fox uh Broadcast TV. In the meantime, let's play great
shows on Fox Sports Radio and of course on the
XM series XM Fox Sports Radio Channel eighty three, which
our first two hours are on. You can hear Clay
Travis how kicked the coverage. You can hear first things first,
(01:16:41):
which is um Nick Wright, Chris Carter, General Wolf. You
can hear undisputed, which is Skip Baylis Shannon Sharp, Enjoy Taylor.
You can hear Dan Patrick, Colin Coward, and of course
you can hear my show, Colin lad his show with
this interesting deduction. Over All, right, Tom Brady still going
(01:17:04):
to be the quarterback. Jimmy Garoppolo traded to the San
Francisco for your dinners. What does that mean for the Patriots.
Let's look at what Belichick has done. He traded quarterback
Jacoby Brissette for a wide receiver who was considered sort
of a bust. Could he get more? Yeah? But the
Colts GM is Chris Ballard, a friend of Andy Reid,
who Belichick likes. They make the deal. Belichick trades quarterback
(01:17:28):
Jimmy Garoppolo for a second round pick. Could they have
gotten more? Absolutely? Whose San Francisco's head coach Kyle Shanahan,
son of Mike Shanahan, who Belichick respects. This is what
presidents do, folks. They pardon people on the way out.
They take care of their friends, Andy Reid, Mike Shanahan,
(01:17:49):
friends of Belichick. He just pardoned them he did him
a solid. Bill is telling you I've not only hit
the turn, I'm on the last couple of holes of
this golf court. We now officially have no succession plan
for Tom Brady. M hm hm. That's an interesting thought.
(01:18:10):
Uh that, Hey, they're both gonna go and Belichick, of
course he's working on he did he get remarried or
is that it just his girlfriend? At some point, all
coaches have to retire, right, But I don't think that's
what this is about. I mean I do I think it.
It's it's a it's a possibility. Maybe maybe A very
(01:18:35):
good friend who works for the Golf Channel named Ryan Burke,
and Ryan tweeted out that the Brady camp three days
ago felt privately that Tom Brady could be traded by
Bill after two thousand and seventeen, that this was a
craft decision. Made it clear that Brady finished his career
his career as a Patriot. The one thing Bill Belichick
has done has been able to do, is at least
(01:18:58):
within his own system may quarterbacks. Sure, Brady has been
his guy, but remember there's a reason that Matt Castle
was overvalued on the market because he was good as
a Patriot. Jacoby Brissette, they were able to evaluate the
quarterback position well. Jimmy Garoppolo, they evaluated the quarterback position well.
And so while to to Colin covered possibility that yeah,
(01:19:19):
they hold hands and walk out in the sunset, the
more likely possibility is one of the two had to go.
Tom Brady is like, he's like all these guys. He
ain't given up his job. He thinks he can play forever.
Read his book. He thinks that he has cracked the
code on the ability to play and not get hurt.
He he has said in his book that getting injured
(01:19:39):
head injuries in the NFL has nothing to do with
luck and everything to do with preparation of your body.
The TB twelve movement, which by the way, several of
his teammates are the tw TV twelve movement, have gotten hurt,
but quarterback careers have been elongated, not just because they're
taking care of themselves, because you can't hit a quarterback,
(01:20:00):
especially one that's in the pocket, and Tom Brady operates
only from the pocket. What's more likely, what's more plausible,
is that just like Garoppolo and Mallet and all these
other quinn the Harriers were drafted by the Patriots. They'll
find the next air apparent in the draft, because even
(01:20:20):
though they don't trust themselves to draft so many other
position players, they do trust themselves to draft the next
quarterback because they've been good at it in the past.
Kelvin Benjamin traded. That's a weird one. Not weird that
he went to the Buffalo Bills because the Buffalo Bills
front office and head coach came from Carolina. That makes sense,
But the fact that the Carolina Panthers trade him that
(01:20:44):
that strikes me as a little bit odd. Panthers are
Panthers are five and three right now, and they got
a third and a seventh round pick. It's not like
they got a first round pick for Kelvin Benjamin. What
could this possible mean? Right? So now, Devin Funcchius and
uh I guess Chris Samuel become your guys. Samuel. Of course,
(01:21:08):
a rookie costs you less. Has that a knee injury
maybe bought in more. But an interesting transformation in styles
for the Carolina Panthers, who a couple of years ago
we're built on get big wide receivers to the cam.
Even though he's inaccurate, can't can't possibly miss him, right,
can I be inaccurate? But you can't miss Greg Olson,
(01:21:28):
you can't miss Calvin Benjamin. Part part of this is
the GM of the Carolina Panthers didn't draft, didn't draft him,
didn't draft him. Benjamin Watson joins the show. Next. I'll
ask him about his thoughts on the Patriots moves as
kims his thoughts on the Saints resurgent season, and I'll
(01:21:52):
ask him about how you handle these sorts of discussions
with owners. That's next, The Doug gottlip Show, Box Sports Radio.
What I'll put you Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio.
And you get a trade, and you get a trade,
and you get a trade, and you get a trade.
(01:22:12):
We started off the show talking about how how how
many different trades have many different stories. The Calvin Benjamin
trade is an interesting one. Traded to the Buffalo Bills,
who are run by former Carolina Panthers coaches and front
office staff. But man right in the middle of a
(01:22:33):
season which Caroline as poorly as Cam Newton has played
there right there in the playoff mix, right there, five
and three, and they don't have Greg Olsen. But I
would also guess that a good portion of this, A
good portion of it is uh, not only the old
rabbi in the room, but the I didn't hire you.
I'll give you an example here. Jim mcwain handled himself
(01:22:55):
poorly and looks like he lied about death threats last week,
this time causing him to be fired over the weekend,
and the Mondy actually into yesterday as Florida had football coach,
but he was hired by Jeremy Foley. Jeremy Foley retired
as athletic director. Scott Strickland, who came over from Mississippi State,
(01:23:18):
was the is the athletic director now, and like, look,
this happens in business more than you possibly could know,
and that you go to work for one guy and
then you got a new boss, and so that new
boss is like you have that's really hard, I didn't
hire you. In college basketball and coaches talking about all
(01:23:43):
the time, three things you don't want. New president, new
a D, new arena because a new president or a
new a D they got their own guy in mind.
And a new arena that builds up the hype to
which you probably not willing to be able to live
up to. In the NFL, you want. You want to
(01:24:06):
have a guy who believes in you, and in Buffalo
you have to McDermott, of course, came as defensive coordinator,
and he brings over his general manager whose assistant general manager? Remember, uh,
Carolina Panthers got rid of Dave Getleman. So you've got
a new general manager who didn't draft Kelvin Benjamin. And
they haven't been all that high on Calvin Benjamin because
(01:24:29):
he's always he's got a little bit of fat gene, right,
not not always in great shape. He's a big target,
he's a good player, but he's not their guy. This
feels like a not their guy syndrome. That's what it
feels like to me. We'll get you ready for Major
League baseball, is uh for Ducci. He's gonna join us
in moments, right, fifteen minutes, Tom for Ducci is gonna
(01:24:51):
join us from Dodger Stadium. As it's dreary, it's overcast,
it's sprinkled and rained a little bit, but it's not
gonna rain, and they're gonna a night's game on Halloween.
Will it be the last baseball game of the year
justin Verland? Which were like to think so, Alright, let's up,
let's get to uh. Benjamin Watson is kind of to
(01:25:12):
join the show. Of course, if you know anything about Watson,
you know as a stand up guy who of course
has played for the Pats, the Browns, the Saints and
now part of the Ravens. And the Ravens just blasted
the Dolphins so much so the Dolphins got rid of
j J I Benjamin Watson joint just in the Doug
(01:25:33):
Out Lip Show. How are you good? Man? You didn't
get traded, right, everybody else in the NFL seems to
be getting traded. You're good. You're still a Raven after
four o'clock. Correct, Well, yeah, I guess so, man, everybody's
checking their phone just to make sure you might get
that little cryptic text, you know, to bring in your playbook. Soques,
I don't remember, and like, look, dude, you been the
(01:25:54):
lead a long time. I don't remember a trade deadline
like this, right, Like, there's a guy to a year,
a guy that's unhappy. But I mean we've had some
big name players being traded of the trade deadline. Do
you remember this before? Well, you definitely hit the nail
on the head. We talk about big names. I mean,
you know, every year, I feel like there are some
(01:26:14):
surprise trades that happened. That's just the nature of the business.
But um, it seemed like it was down to the wire.
Especially I heard you mentioned j j I and you know,
one of the great young backs in this league. I
didn't expect to see that coming. But you see how
teams are starting to try to position themselves for this
last half of the season. You know, at this time
of the season right now, at these middle UM four games,
(01:26:35):
in the middle of the season is where a teams
start to make a push for the playoffs and where
teams start to separate themselves. So if you've got teams
that are they have a knee uh, and they think
that that need can be fulfilled and they can make
that push for another championship, they're gonna take that chance,
all right. So how would you how would you assess
your team? I mean, here we are halfway through the season,
(01:26:56):
four UM four down, some really uneven from really uneven performances, right,
Jags and Steelers bad? That was recently, Dolphins good. What's
your assessment of the current state of the Ravens. I
will say we've been inconsistent, um together, Uh, you know,
as a whole collectively, I would say that we you know,
we're a team that has has gone to London and
(01:27:18):
got blown out. Then we're a team that blows out
Miami last week. We're a team that goes on the
road and plays very well in Oakland, and then we
come home and we we've lost some tough home games,
and so, uh, this second half of the season has
got to be about being consistent. It's got to be about,
especially offensively, about doing the little things right and getting
first downs and staying on the steel, not getting three,
(01:27:39):
and ounced executing in the passing game. Our run game
has been uh, pretty well, one of the best in
the league as far as running the football, but we
have to get more out of our passing game, um,
and really help our defense out. I think defensively we've
definitely been more consistent than we have offensively. But um, together,
we have to to be able to work together in
order to get wins day in, you know, Sunday in
(01:27:59):
and day out, and we haven't done that. We've kind
of been I was joking with somewhere earlier. You just
don't know what you're gonna get from us half the
time because one week we're one way, in another week
we're another way. Well, it comes all the way. It
comes down to performance and to execution. Um, it's as
simple as that. And we've got we prepare well. I
felt that we prepare well for most of all weeks. UM.
(01:28:21):
We've obviously had a lot of injuries, which every team
has to deal with. UM, but we have to be
able to overcome those. We can't allow those two to
be set backs for us. And UM, you know, we've
gotta win at home. I think we we maybe even
as far as the road and home goes and and
that's that's that's not good. That's not the making of
a good team. And so we know that right now
we're at a place where, um, everything is in front
(01:28:43):
of us. I think a lot of teams are saying
that right now everything is in front of them. Uh,
it's really about what they do this next Sunday in
the in a few sundays after that, it's what's gonna
gonna make or break the season for us, but also
for a lot of other teams. And you know what's
interesting about you guys is as you start you mentioned
Woodhead coming back and get healthy. Uh, you know, Uh,
you know, you get the flat oh situation where he
(01:29:04):
appears to be healthy enough to to probably go this weekend,
but you have the bye week up coming after this one, right,
So it stands the reason you guys could. Finally, you guys,
if you could, you gotta go on the road to Tennessee.
But if you could get that win and use that
week off and get healthy, the best football maybe ahead
of you. Well, the Bob is gonna come at a
great time. Um. I think that's always the case. You know, everything,
(01:29:26):
every everybody is injured or struggling, he's like, please let
me get to the ball. Uh. And so for us,
I think the Bible is definitely gonna come at a
good time. Um. Even so, even when we get much
of our roster back who may have been injured, it's
still gonna come down to simply xs and os and
going out there on Sunday and performing at our best
and making plays and and having loan drive sustaining drives.
(01:29:48):
The defense continue to get turnovers, continuing to shut people
down and shut people out, putting in our offense in
a good position. Our special teams has come up big
for us a lot of times this year. For them
to continue to play well and even to get better,
I think is important moving into this time of the year.
And so, um, you know, whether whether we had the
bobbies or not, those things don't change. You know. There's
obviously been a lot of talk about the protests and
(01:30:11):
most recently about Bob mcdre. You're somebody who has given
I think really thoughtful commentary on on where you stand
on everything. Um, what what do you think of where
we are in terms of the league, the fans and
the protest as of you know, Halloween October two thousand seventeen. Yeah, well,
(01:30:31):
I think when you look at our country, you know,
sometimes I like to look macro and then and then
come in you know, micro. When we look at our country,
we're at a very uh fractured state. Um. We're at
a time where there is a lot of animosity between
different size there's a lot of name calling, there's um,
there's a lot of really intense emotions, um all the
(01:30:52):
way around. I don't think, you know, I don't remember
a time, you know, in the last couple of years
where it's been like this. And then when you bring
that into the National Football League and you have, um,
God is taking a need during the national anthem or
whatever they're doing, UM, protesting for social injustice, uh process,
protesting for equality, those sorts of things, trying to bring
a word this to those things. And then you put
that into the blender that is America right now, you're
(01:31:14):
gonna get a lot of strong reactions from a lot
of different people on a lot of different sides. UM.
And so you add in um, you know Mr Maniro's
statements UM about him as you know, running a prison,
and you filter that through everything that's going on. Of
course you're going to get a reaction because of what
it sounds like he is saying or what he is saying. UM.
And it's a time where you know, I think the
(01:31:35):
biggest thing for us to do is to be willing
to have conversations with each other, be willing to listen
to each other, be willing to to to sit down
with someone or come face to face with someone who
you think you really disagree with that you may continue
to disagree with them, but to hear why they're saying
what they're saying on both sides. We we can't we
can't expect to to to put our ideals into someone
(01:31:57):
else's protests. We need to hear why they're protesting from them.
We need to hit that from them and be willing
to listen. And then on the other side, we need
to hear a why are these people offended by what
I'm doing? Okay, I can see why they may be offended,
even though they're taking it the wrong way. Um, there
are some things that have no place in our society.
Calling people at s obs has no place. Um, you
know what Mr mcnaor said, when you look at it
(01:32:19):
in light of you know, the circumstances, of course, it
has no place. But he did apologize. We have to
be willing to say, Okay, this guy said this, he
said it was wrong for it, he apologized from it.
It points to a greater issue, maybe a greater Um,
what what do you what do you think? What do
you think? What do you think problem? What do you
think the issue? I mean, because like, look, I know
you've heard that expression before. Obviously it's it makes run
(01:32:40):
the asylum, not the prisoner. Okay, So when you've heard
it before, like I didn't, that didn't to me mean
mean that he assumed black players were prisoners. There was
a jail. I didn't I didn't think that. But I'm
also not black, and obviously Troy Vincent too, and that's why.
And that's why, of course, and that's why you have
me on the show. And you don't understand why you're
not black. And I can say to you, hey, look, um,
(01:33:03):
you know, black players feel like Number one, he's talking
about us because the people that are protesting are black.
You haven't seen white players, many white players, if any,
taking knee um the way black players have. So he
is talking about black players. And number two, when you
when you take a step back and understand UM, the
prevailing UM, I guess atmosphere of what's going on in
(01:33:25):
the country, of course, it sounds that can attack on
the black players. And when you look at how black
players a lot of times are told to sit down,
to shut up, just to perform. There's this idea that
comes all the way from slavery up until now, that
that that black folks should be quiet and and um
and just perform and only speak when spoken to. This
is the idea that many black people feel that it's
coming from um, the larger society. But what would it
(01:33:50):
would it be Would it be fair to say that
that's also a common theme though in terms of people
that run a business and people work for any business,
right like like there's not even in like in my business.
Like if I was if I was in a meeting
with my boss, if I was constantly texting my bosses
or giving them ideas or telling them what I think
we should do with Fox Sports or Fox Sports Radio,
(01:34:11):
they would kind of like they would say, do your
own show. Don't try and do everybody else's show that
you the inmates don't run the asylum. The you know,
the dog, the tail can't wad the dog. Those type
of of expressions could be used. Couldn't that be said
for any employee, not just employees of the NFL. It
could be said for any employee. And I've actually had
someone say to me that the tail can't wear the dog.
(01:34:33):
I won't tell you who said that. I win, but
my but my point is simply the context. Yeah, And
so the context is important when you say what you
say amongst different groups at different times, in different spheres,
certain things can be said that can't be said at
other times. And so while there's a large backlash against him,
(01:34:55):
also think that that we should hear what he has
to say and allow him to speak on his behalf
and say why he said what he said and also
say that, hey, I didn't mean to offend people. That's
what he said. I I can't say he didn't mean
that sam people, but I'm hearing it from his mouth,
so I take him at his word. Do you do
you think that's why they treated Dwayne Brown because of well,
(01:35:19):
Dwyanne Brown was pretty pretty look he was also he
had held out, and there was thoughts they were gonna
move Dwyne Brown anyway, and this in Seattle did need
a left tackle. But Dwayne Brown after the game on
Sunday was like, hey, we're just playing for us. Dwyane
Brown was still bothered by the by by the comments,
and he was kind of he was more vocal about
it than others. Some of it because he's a vet.
He's been in the league for ten years and and
(01:35:41):
so he can he can be more outspoken because of it.
I'm just wondering if in the in the in the
confines of an NFL locker room, you sweet see Dwyanne
Brown gets moved and everybody looks around says, well that's
because he held out, or is it that's because what
he said about Bob McNair. Well, one thing I've learned
over over my fourteen year career is that it is
always a combination of a lot of things. Sometimes it's not.
Sometimes it's immediately there's a there was a deal that
(01:36:04):
came up and the GM says, wow, this deal comes up,
we just want to do this right now. It's gonna
help our football team, and boom they do it. And
then sometimes teams are looking for a deal. And so
with with Dwayne, I don't know a specific situation. I
know he's been out for a number of weeks, and
so that right there and of itself, lends itself to
being a guy that may be traded that if the
time is right. Um, he's obviously a great football player.
(01:36:26):
And I don't know if that was maybe the last
strong maybe it wasn't. I don't know enough to know.
But but what I do know is that, um, you know,
sometimes it's one thing, sometimes it's a it's a combination
of things and and the team and a player. So
you know this this is the best move for me.
Last thing, Uh, go to candy. If you get one
candy on Halloween? What is it? After all that we're
(01:36:49):
gonna start talking about candy, and then we can't leave
on this note about social justice like that. They were
better than that, right, Like we gotta we gotta, we gotta,
we got, we gotta a little bit. I've always been
a I've always been a skittled guy. I just always
had since I was a little kid. I love skittles
and sour patch kids. So if I can get either
one of those, you know, and make sure I go
(01:37:10):
to the dentist, you know shortly thereafter, I'm good. Yeah,
I'm sour more than sweet as well. I will. You
know they have sour skittles. You even heard those? I do?
I love you know what? That would be the one
thing because that's the combination. I have had those, and
I do love those two. Hey man, Happy Halloween. Congrats
on the win. And you guys kind of got a
little mini bye week after the Thursday game. One more game,
you got another bye week, which was everybody needs in
(01:37:32):
the league, but especially your crew with how many injuries
you guys sustaining could use it. Best of luck in Tennessee,
and thanks for joining us, Thanks sir anytime. All right,
that's Benjamin Watson always gives a thoughtful commentary on what's
going on in the league. Tom Perduccio join us live
from Dodger Stadium. Up coming next, Who did the Dodgers
go to out of the pen? Will they let Rich
Hill pitch more than an inning? And does this feel
(01:37:54):
like a must win for the Astros not just the Dodgers.
That's next. What True Car? You can find out what
other people in your area paid for the same car
you're looking for and on average save over three tho
M s r P. Whether you're looking for a new
or used car. Visit True Car and enjoying more confident
car buying experience. Oh my god, the Browns, Oh, the Browns, Oh,
(01:38:27):
the Browns. Um wow do we have Rducci yet? We're
working on Tom fer Ducci, who wrote a fantastic piece
I want to get to Um wow wow wow wow
wow wow. The Cleveland Browns apparently thought they had pulled
(01:38:49):
off a trade for a J. McCarron. Wait till you
hear why a J. McCarron is not a member of
the Cleveland Browns. Ye. By the way, that's a pretty
good teased Just once you guys all to know. We'll
get to that after we get Tom Verducci first, then
we'll get you an update all these wild day of
trades in the NFL. Of course, we're leading you up
to Major League Baseball. Could be the last baseball game
(01:39:12):
until April on Fox TV tonight. And part of that
incredible crew is Tom Verducci, who I would I would
encourage you two will tweet it out. He tweets it out.
You can go to Sports Illustrated and read it as well.
Tom Verducci joins us on the Doug Gottlip Show here
on Fox Sports Radio. Um. The headline is the Astros
and Dodgers forever change baseball with an unforgettable World Series.
(01:39:35):
But Tom, I've I've heard you talk about this on
Dan patt on The Dan Patrick Show. How much of
this is to be believed because the ball all year
has been flying out at a record rate and he
just doesn't feel like this is on the up and up. Yeah,
you know, if you listen to MLB, they'll tell you
that the balls all the time and that there's no
difference in the baseballs. But all you have to do
(01:39:56):
is talk to pictures. And I know you can accuse
them of being biased, but watch her own eyes and
see the way balls are carrying out of the ballpark.
It really began in the second half of the season,
and if you remember it, I know, it seems like
forever ago. We were really in the pits as far
as offensive production. I mean, we were going back in
the was that bad? And then it turned on a
dime and we become really a home run strikeout kind
(01:40:17):
of games. And that game we saw it in in Houston,
Game five, I mean, that was one of the most thrilling,
exciting games I've ever seen. But it also spoke to
what baseball is now right where you're almost defending the
whole run, just trying to keep the ball out of
the air, because if it goes in the air has
a pretty good chance it's gonna go out. It's unbelievable. Um,
how much how much blame should Dave Roberts get, Maybe
(01:40:39):
not for any one move, but the moves especially early,
you know, go and get rich here early, or or
maybe like I point out, I love using Kelly Jansen.
I know it's only a two run leading Game one,
just knowing it's a marathon, not a sprint. How much
blame should he get for the fact that the bullpen
is taxed. Yeah, some blame for or um. Listen to
(01:41:01):
the Dodgers, this is what they've done. They they got
their pictures. The starting picture out of the game five
innings are less seventies six times this year. I mean,
no team that won the World Series doing that more
than sixty times. So this is our m O. It's
based on analytics that tell you when the line it
turns over a third time, you better off having a
fresh arm in the game. Then you are your starting pitcher.
(01:41:24):
It was fatiguing at that point. Well, it's a little
bit different as you're seeing here, especially in the World Series.
The middle three games the only time you're gonna play
three straight days in a row in the World Series.
And you saw how Brandon Marrow, especially with gas at
that point. You know, I thought the worst decision they
made Dave Robert Smith was when he met Roberts. Roberts
Brout Morrow went to a game down five to three
(01:41:46):
the other day, I think it was game two. Um three,
You know, that's a winning piece for you. That's a
guy you need in a tie game or when you
have a lead late. It's not a guy you want
to burn, especially because he's pitched so much when you're
down to now I know it thought it thought was
let's hold the game and maybe we'll come back. But
to me, he paid the price for that in Game
(01:42:07):
five when Marrow went out there in the one run
game with the one run lead, had absolutely nothing. Six
pitches later, they were down three. I've never seen let's
turn around like that in the World Series. Six pitches,
four runs. Alright, So I I used that though. And look,
the Dodgers, you're going against Verlander. He's been unbelievable in
elimination games. Um, and you know they got rich Hill
(01:42:29):
out there, who they've always pulled rich Hill early. That's
that's that's as you said, that's not just the Dodgers
m O in terms of all of their pictures, especially
with rich Hill. But is it possible this is kind
of a must win game for Houston. The Dodgers bullpen
hasn't been good because it's taxed and they've got to
Kenley Jansen. But the Astros bullpen has been equally putrid,
(01:42:50):
and they don't have they don't. Giles is suddenly out
right he's persona non grata and they have I don't know,
they're gonna use the colors. They don't even know what
they do in Game seven of it feels like an
all in scenario for both teams. Well, you just cut
on what I think it's a quiet narrative in this game,
and that is there's tremendous pressure on the Astros. The
Dodgers are the team facing elimination. The Astros want to
(01:43:12):
do everything that they can to avoid a Game seven
because of the Bolt situation. But to me, the flash
point of this game, because now remember we're back to
National League rules for Landers in the lineup hitting, there's
no d H third time around, when the pitcher spot
comes up is always the flash point in the National
League game. If you are tied or trailing, you have
to take your starting pitcher out of the game. Where
(01:43:34):
does a J hitch go at that point? If he's
got a lead for Landers throwing, well that's kind of easy.
He can continue to ride his horse. I mean, justin
we sink and go over, but tie game or with
runners on base, especially scoring position, does he pull him?
And then where does he go if he's got a
leader the game ties. I'm telling you right now, he's
going to give the ball the lance of colors. I'm
worried about game seven. When we get to a game seven,
(01:43:56):
So for me, flash point of this game, because I
do think it will be close. Justin Burland is third
time up? What does a J. Hinch do? What about
what about Dave Roberts. Uh, there's been some talk of
Alex Wood. I know you Darvish is supposed to start seven,
But wouldn't it be smart to go to you Darvish? Uh?
You know, in the fourth or in the fifth inning?
(01:44:16):
Who do you think the first arm he goes to?
Considering how tax the traditional bullpens arms are, Well, it's
not Darvish. I asked Dave Roberts about that. Starvish is
not pitching this game. He's out in this game. But
now it becomes and you mentioned this with rich Hill,
he averages facing twenty two batters a game over the
whole season in the postseason eighteen, so they're not trusting him.
(01:44:38):
Third time around, you get all the right handers five
in a row at the top of the layup. Where
do you go at that point? Third time around? You know,
is it my Ada? Now? It depends on how my
Ada feels tonight because he's been used a lot in
this postseason. Again, we get back to using your bullpendency
for the series goes, the more use the fatigue factors in.
Alex Wood has left handed, but I'll tell you what,
I love the way his matched up against the astroist
(01:45:01):
the other day. He really kept the ball down to
change up with fantastic. Wouldn't surprise me if that's where
he goes? Uh So to me, that's the flash point
for Dave Roberts. When the Houston lineup turns over that
third time? Does he do something that he never does
and that means trusting rich Hills deeper into a game?
Or does he go to my Eta or does he
go to Wood? Those are the three options. Dodger Stadium
(01:45:22):
traditionally has not been a home run hitters park. Um,
but it was a home run hitters park obviously in
Game two. It was also hot hot. Does all get
out a game one? In Game two gonna be more
traditional fall southern California weather sixties, bit moist, bit overcast,
chance of a little bit of drizzle. Um stands to
(01:45:42):
reason that this could be a little bit more of
a pictures dual. Yeah, I think so. I mean, definitely
the weather factory in the game to their um. As
hot as it was, the ball was absolutely flying. You know,
Justin Turner told me it brought me something years ago.
Here at Dodger Stadium. You can tell how the ball
is going to carry by the rails in front of
the dugout. When they're wet, the ball moist. The ball
(01:46:06):
doesn't fly, so as you put it. When it's dry,
it's flies, and I expect we will have moister in
the air tonight. The ball will not carry anywhere near
at this first couple of games in the series. Last thing,
if the Astros win this thing, it's also gonna be
a win for tanking, right. I mean, they gutted their
roster and they absolutely tanked in two thousand and thirteen.
(01:46:27):
Granted the number one overall picks in thirteen and fourteen
haven't haven't played out as such, but you know they
got about four or five of their best players in
the draft between two thousand and eleven and now. Um so,
is there is there another Houston Astros on the way?
I mean, the Nationals have always had a bunch of
talent and you've yet to get there. But is there? Tom?
(01:46:47):
You know this league really well is there another kind
of butting a franchise that has this type of talent
that has gutted it in the past four or five years,
that is using the Houston Astros boop boop boopprint as
their play. Yeah. Well, first of all, I really hate
the words thanking. These scenes are trying to win, but
they're trying to win smart. In other words, the biggest
(01:47:08):
thing that's driving baseball now is where an organization is
on the winning curve. If you have a team that
the mediocre team, there's no sense in poring money is
to try to win a five games. You either are
going for it and I'm talking about winning the World Series,
or you are rebuilding. There's nobody in the middle of
the road. Now, that's why now you saw this year
we had three teams win more than a hundred games,
because you do have a lot of teams in the rebuilding.
(01:47:29):
And when you rebuild, you have to make it a
full rebuild. It can't be something done halfway. Now, I
would tell you we have I think seven to nine
teams in baseball that are in the rebuilding stage. You know,
I would look at the White Sox as a team
that um through trades more than draft so far, trying
to copy what the Astros have done in terms of
(01:47:50):
trying to get a good base of young players and
have them all hit at the same time. It's not
easily done, but if at least they have a plan
that I think will off in three to five years,
rather than team like Seattle spout a decade just patching
the major league roster and all they keep getting is
six wins and they take at home after the season end.
(01:48:11):
You know, at some point you have to break it
down to build it back up again. And that's what Uh.
That's one of the things that Houston was able to do,
not not to play the Dodgers. They threw a bunch
of money at it, but they also rebuilt their their
bullpen at the time. But that's because they were so
flush with cash. Tom, you've done a great job so far.
This article is fantastic. We'll tweet it out. He enjoy
the World Series. I think we all hope there's at
(01:48:31):
least one more game because this series deserves a seven game.
But we'll see. It's very lander and he's been great
in these situations. Thanks so much for joining us. Thanks
for having me. All right, that's the great Tom Verducci
joining us. Let's quickly bring in Dan Buyer, because it's
been a wild day in sports stand now more so
about the trades that didn't get done to the ones
that did. It was earlier today when it all started,
(01:48:53):
that the Eagles acquired Dolphins running back J J. I
for a fourth round pick of the team draft, and
then the Carolina hamp sent wide receiver Calvin Benjamin to
the Buffalo Bills for a third round pick in seventh
round pick in the eighteen draft. And now there's reports
out of Cleveland saying that the Browns and Bengals had
a deal done involving A J. McCarron going from Cincinnati
(01:49:15):
to Cleveland. However, ESPN says that the deal wasn't finalized
in time, and now we're finding out, according to reports
from Cleveland, that the Browns didn't do their portion of
the deal with the NFL League office, why the Bengals did,
and because of the Brown's delay of not calling it in,
the trade was not completed. A J. McCarron remaining a
member of the Cincinnati Bengals. There's a Game six of
(01:49:38):
the World Series tonight. You and Tom Fernucci we're just
talking about it. Astros and Dodgers. You'll see it at
seven thirty Eastern time on Fox with the Astros up
three too. It's justin Verlander against Rich Hill. Dave Robert says,
Clayton Kershaw is available if needed tonight. And finally, Philly
dot Com says the Sixers aren't picking up the fourth
year option on the contracts of Senator julil Oka. For
(01:49:58):
what A Day in Sport said a lot of day. Well, okay,
let's let's let's tell this story here, Dan keep your
mic open. Uh, Dan buyerre you here. He's got his
own show Sunday Mornings, a fantasy show getting ready for
for Fox NFL Sunday. Ryan Music our producer of course,
John Ramos. Uh, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Okay,
So the story goes and you guys interrupt if I
got this wrong. Um, let's go back to yesterday. Okay, yesterday,
(01:50:23):
the Browns coaching staff apparently somebody communicated with a writer
in Denver. I was like, hey, we're still at work,
and the front office went home at five o'clock this
the night before the trade deadline. And then Hugh Jackson's
daughter essentially nodded and said, yeah, that's that's exactly what happened.
(01:50:44):
Then today, trade deadline day, they were working on a
trade for a J. McCarron. Remember a J. McCarron. Not
only do many people believe could be a starting quarterback
in this league, Hugh Jackson used to be the offensive
coordinator there when they drafted a J. Mc karen. So
the thought is, when you have to move out of
the state, give them their quarterback, and who knows what
(01:51:05):
you had to pay for n J. Mcarren, probably a
second round pick, maybe a third round pick in order
to get him, and Hugh Jackson would have a guy
that he knew could play within his system. Done right,
it would shut everybody up. So they consummate the trade
at three and per multiple reports, the reason Cleveland didn't
(01:51:25):
call in the trade to the NFL on time was
they were too busy congratulating one another. That's the most
Cleveland Browns thing I've ever heard. Right. The reason they're
named the Browns is not because Paul Brown started him.
It's because we can't call them dog poop, so we
call them the Browns. That's what they are. It's unbelievable.
(01:51:47):
Now here's the other part to it. Um, I believe
there is a different like I've never people have never
liked the Bill Belichick thing with with wasn't it? That
was it? Belichecker was a craft buyer that said organizations
win championships. Trying to think who it was, Oh Jesus,
(01:52:08):
But but the fact or maybe it was Bill Parcels
all the streets and organizations win championship. Players' win championships.
Organizations win championships, right, yes, and uh, but the fact
is that it actually the better maybe a better line
is we have this tendency to say, well, everything is
a great well run organization, like if there weren't for
(01:52:30):
organizations like the Browns, you can't have there's an average
in there, right, there's average organizations, there's really well run organizations,
and there's really poorly ones. Obviously there it was Jerry
krautsa that of the bulls, Yes, Jerry Kraus, the bulls
at that organizations which have helps when that organization has
Michael Jordan's got a pipping in Phil Jackson. But still, uh,
(01:52:51):
there is something to organizations not completely shooting. They didn't
just shoot themselves in the foot, they took out a
machine gun. They took out one of those a R
thirteens that gunlover guy, and just blew away all of
their feet. Bivey. I would also have to think, Doug,
that the Bengals were getting a you set, a second
(01:53:14):
or a third. Remember the Browns have those extra picks.
And I would think that if you're Cleveland and you're
hearing all of the backlash about not getting Jimmy Garoppolo,
that you were going to try to at least maneuver,
you know, try to try to get a J. McCarroll.
Oh exactly, because I don't know why the Bengals, for
(01:53:34):
as bad as the Brown's here, would trade within the
division unless the deal was magnificent. And so that's why
I think now Cincinnati probably at a first round pick
offered as part of the deal to bring in a J. McCarron.
Just just a guess, but amazing high fives all around. Hey,
(01:53:54):
did um did anybody call that that? Listen, all of
us have that where you threw on some meat onto
the grill and you're like, man, why isn't this cooking?
Like did you remember trying the grill? Like? Oh, yeah,
but there's gotta be some sort of checks and balances
in there. Right, Look, I'm leave on the I'm leave
the jacuzzi tub on sort of guy. Right, I'm leave
(01:54:17):
the I've I have been I've been rightfully accused by
my wife of leaving the grill on overnight, Like, hey,
is the girl sell on? Like yes it is. Like
I'm just as forgetful as the next guy. But this
is one of those deals to you, which like, all right,
we got the trade, call that thing in. Here's the
other thing it does. How do you think Deshan Kaiser
feels today because they traded for a starting quarterback. Deshan
(01:54:38):
Kaiser is not the guy there. That's what that trade
tells you. Oh my goodness. Oh yeah, yeah. I love you, Cleveland.
I love you so much, so much, because I wouldn't
keep making fun of the Browns if it wasn't so easy.
But it is, Cleveland. Oh yeah, all right. Up coming
(01:55:06):
next on the Dug Gotlip Show, we'll get you to
the press and we'll make our picks on tonight's Game
seven the World Series. Who Happy holidays, Cleveland, Doug Gottlip Show,
Fox worsh Radio. I just like some stories are too.
This is one of those ones where truth is stranger
than fiction or better than fiction, like real story, I
(01:55:29):
cannot if you're just joining us. The Cleveland Browns thought
they had consummated trade to acquire A G. McCarron to
be their new quarterback with the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals
called in the trade. The Browns instead were too busy,
high five in each other, called in the trade after
the four o'clock trade deadline, and the NFL is like, nope,
missed the deadline. Wow, get to the press, the press
(01:55:59):
by Dan Bio what Cincinnati dot com saying it was
gonna be a second and third round pick going to
the Bengals for a J. McCarron. So those numbers that
we talked about round wise, the Browns have two first rounders,
three second rounders coming up in the teen draft, and
a third round. They were willing to give up two
of those picks for a J. McCarron, and now I
guess they get to keep them because of high fives
(01:56:21):
and high tens and body bumps. Um. Moving on, There
were actual deals done today, Doug. Yes, teams actually got
in the paperwork. Panthers and Bills were able to do so.
Carolinas in wide receiver Colvin Benjamin to Buffalo for a
third round pick at a seventh round pick in the
teen draft, and Buffalo's GM and their head coach both
came from Carolina drafted Calvin Benjamin. What's more, maybe more
interesting is uh and I guess you know Carolina's current
(01:56:43):
gentlemanager did not. But that's the second big pass catching
threat that Cam Newton has lost this year. They're going smaller,
they're going younger, They're going more sprightful and athletic. I guess, Caroline,
it feels like they they're they're the worst feeling five
and three team in the league, but there are five
and three are far from out of it. You know what.
I love too as well, And I like what the
Eagles have done. I've talked about their big wide receivers before.
(01:57:05):
With Carson Wentz makes it easier for him on the
move to throw the ball. Same thing with Tyrod Taylor.
Want to get a huge target like Calvin Benjamin to
try to make a playoff pushing in that postseason droughts
um commentary by me at Giants corner Generous Jenkins suspended
for their Week nine game against the Rams for violating
team rules. According to the head coach Ben McAdoo, Jenkins
didn't return to the team on Monday following a bye,
(01:57:26):
was a no show at the team meeting and in
fact and talk to coaches until this morning. That all
you gotta do. His text while you're not coming in, Dude,
I'm not gonna be in today. But he waited until
tomorrow today to show up and actually talk to the coaches.
Wasn't going to be there. How about this from Arizona?
Doesn't look like David Johnson is going to return this year.
(01:57:47):
That's according to his head coach Bruce Arians, who says
he doubts the tailback will return from his wrist injury. Yeah.
I mean that's why they acquired Adrian Peterson. Right. Everybody
knew this was bad. Everybody felt like it was probably
a season end, and it feels like a season. Dolphins
A linebacker Kiko Alonso won't be suspended for his hit
on Joe Flacco, but still could be fined. That also
came out today, Like I don't think it was purposely dirty,
(01:58:11):
but I do think it's dirty to launch yourself. You
just can't launch yourself. I don't think he meant to
hit him in the head with his shoulder. I do
think he meant to propel himself at his legs. Um,
let's see what else we got in the NFL, because
there's a lot, oh, Brocco, said Couch. Fans Joseph not
naming a starting quarterback as of yet for Week nine,
likely down to Trevor Simeon or brock Oswilder against the
Eagles for this Sunday's matchup. Pexton Lynch wouldn't be ready
(01:58:33):
as he returns from his shoulder injury, but Fans Joseph
not wanting to commit to a starting quarterback right now. Yeah,
but if Jevor Simon was his quarterback, then he would say,
just like Lovey Smith said in the Super Bowl X shows,
was my quarterback? Right, Trevor Simmons was a quarterback, he
would have said, Trevor Simmons a quarterback? Uh? NFL wise,
Let's see. Hey, how about this from the NBA Philly
(01:58:54):
dot Com saying the Sixers won't pick up the fourth
year option on the contract of center tolil okafell Um.
I think everybody kind of sees this. Can't remember that
doesn't mean that he's absolutely out with the Philadelphia seventy
six years. You can still offer a guy you could
be a restricted restricted free agent, meaning you can match
any deal. But it also speaks to just how wildly
(01:59:15):
disappointing an NBA career he's had. Like he's a player
from He's a player that's not been as good as
they thought. He hasn't staying good enough shape. He's had
some off the court issues, but more maybe more than anything,
he's a player from kind of a foregone era. Right,
undersize scoring, low post who can't defend or shoot in
the perimeter, doesn't have the same value he used to have.
(01:59:35):
Baseball Tonight, Game six of the World Series Astros and
Dodgers at Dodgers Stadium, Dodgers Skippert Dave Roberts said today
Clayton Kershaw probably would be better suited for a longer
stint in Game seven. However, is available tonight if needed
four games six as the Dodgers are down three two
in the series. Would you use Playton Kershaw tonight? I
(01:59:55):
would not. I would save him for tomorrow night. I
got Alex would I would rather use you Darvish tonight,
then use Clayton Kersha all tonight, Yeah, I hate also
as well of just try to at least get the
guy some rest. Madison Bumgardner seems to be the exception
and Randy Johnson as well. Maybe the exception to the rule.
But if you can keep them for Game seven, do so. Finally,
(02:00:17):
Astro's manager A. J. Hinch told reporters today that his
kids have been in school a total of six days
this month. Is they have followed their team on the
World Series journey. Not too bad six out of thirty
one for the for the kids attending school. For A J.
Hinches kids, he's got to talk to holiday holidays kids.
They do this deal where they opened up laptops and
they have a video camera in the classroom so they
(02:00:39):
can go kind of anywhere if they want to want
to travel with him to a game. Apparently A J.
Hinch not up on two thousand seventeen technology, get out
there and pressed. That was the press Whins and night.
Ramo's Dodgers Dodgers. I'm gonna go out on a limb
dug and I'm gonna say the Dodgers. If you don't know,
John ramoson Resident Dodger Ryan Music Southern California kid, Are
(02:01:02):
you in on the Dodgers as well? I will say yes,
we will see a Game seven. Dyer think it ends tonight.
O Downer, Dan, Downer, Dan, I'm going Game seven. I'm
saying that gets to Game seven. Nothing has made any
sense in this series except for the fact that the
bullpens are either gassed or they stink, and the ball
(02:01:27):
just keeps going out of the yard. I do believe
something's up with the baseball. It's just they're not just
hitting home runs, they're hitting mammoth hall runs with one hand. Yeah,
this thing goes seven. It just it feels like it's written. Plus,
baseball season can't end on Halloween. I don't think it
(02:01:48):
goes extra things I don't know, like even the prediction thing.
I don't. I don't know. I do. I think Dodgers
all hands on deck, ton of pressure on on the Astros.
I think their bats go a little cold tonight, and
I think we go to a Game seven. Have a
happy and save Halloween. If you're one of those throw eggsit,
trick or treat guys, you're going straight to hell. Uh
serve up big monster sized candy bars to people's kids.
(02:02:09):
So they can, like our kids, get diabetes. I'm Doug Gottlie,
Happy Halloween,
