Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the best of the Don Gottlieb Show on
Fox Sports Radio. Boom went up America. Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio, coming to you from the city of
angels a city which we don't know what to do
with all these brand new Dodger hats. What do I
do have my new Dodger hat? I've only wanted a
couple of days. My feeling is the Dodgers will probably
(00:25):
be back. Um. There's a little adage in sports which
has a tendency to work. No, it isn't defense wins championships,
although the Dodgers defense did break down the first inning,
which made the fact that you Darvish had nothing look
even worse. Um, there is the adage you gotta taste
the pain before you taste the champagne. Astro's tasted that
(00:48):
pain a couple of years ago. Dodgers have tasted several
times over, but this is their first in the World Series.
Maybe that's what it is. No, No, I mean this one.
You can't win a game in the first half, but
you can sure as hell lose it. That's what happened
to the Dodgers in the first and second inning. And
(01:08):
while it's fair to say, hey, you Darvish should have
been better. You Darvish gets paid to be better. You
Darvish's stuff is supposed to be better. It's fair to say,
high insight, damn right it is. You know why because
Clayton Kershaw was better last night than you Darvish. Right,
(01:30):
so I understand all this, Like, look, listen, Dave Roberts.
Dave Roberts, couldn't you he had to do what he did,
and hinesight, it's not fair. Hell, yes, it's fair. And
even if you thought, all right, all right, look it
ain't great, but let's just try and get a couple
(01:51):
of innings out of him. When you have to strike
out a picture and you don't have your infield in
and you cannot induce a swinging miss from a pit sure,
and then of course you give up surrender a run
right then and there Darvis should have come out right then.
(02:11):
So uh, look, congrats to the Houston Astros. They pitched better,
they hit better, they played better defense, and to a
certain extent, luck was on their side. Dodgers did have
some hard hit balls which they caught. All that's fair,
But the fact is the Dodgers choked, which starts with
(02:32):
their manager, and choking, by my estimation, is performing at
a level far below that of your average level, due
in most part to the pressure of the magnitude the situation.
Cody Bellinger couldn't pick up breaking balls last. He was
completely lost at the plate. He's twenty two years old.
He'll have more opportunities. But even Cody bellingerv asked me, like,
(02:54):
did you choke last? I be like yep. Puig was
over through Chris Taylor one for five, although he did
hit a hard hit line drive that was called Austin
Barnes over four. They were one for thirteen with runners
in scoring position. They had easy opportunities where they had
scoring opportunities in both the first and second inning, and
(03:15):
as John Smoltz pointed out, hey man, listen, you can
you can swing and miss all you want during the game.
But when a guy hits two batters, make him throw strikes.
But it starts with Dave Roberts and his inability to
recognize that you, Darvish, did not have it. It's not cruel,
(03:35):
it's not demeaning. It's sports. Didn't have it was bad,
was bad, and both starts and considering how poorly he
pitched in his first outing, to be surprised by how
poorly he pitched in his second second outing, and to
not pull him when he can't get a picture, to
swing and miss in the second inning, that's coaching mal practice.
(03:58):
Here's Dave Roberts ex acted, even even today that the velocity.
I thought he was right there. I thought he's gonna
really throw the baseball well. And I think it was
three and a third maybe in this series, and and
just very unfortunate. And I know he wanted to baseball.
I know he was prepared. I just can't explain the results.
(04:18):
I really can't. I can choked right Ken, not good
enough for the moment, not a big game picture. That's it.
He threw seven pitches. There were two swings and mrs
two and one of them was George Springer right before
(04:39):
he hit one that had the exit velo. The exit
velocity when he hit the home run was a hundred
and ten miles an hour. He basically hit the baseball
like a howitzer fires Howards fires uh missile hundred and
ten miles an hour. That will take off your hand,
(05:01):
that takes paint off of a seat when it hits
it you're literally the only guy who's like, I didn't
see it coming, so i'd coming in the first inning,
didn't have it, and he was shook by the fact
his defense let him down and then his offense followed suit.
That was a winnable baseball game in spite of you, Darvish.
(05:22):
Is pathetic. Picture like the fact that they couldn't get
through to mc mc coolors didn't have it. Take a
listen to Lance mc colors. I know I didn't have
much to give other than just trying to gut it
out as long as I could. The team knew, if
you know that, I'm not going to short least, but
everyone's ready to go with the ballpriend today and he
saw all of our best guys come out of there,
(05:44):
and you know, I got it out as long as
I could. This is this is crazy. Seven strikes. Look,
some of it's luck, I'm not I'm not disputing some
of that. Some of it's hitting the ball where guys are,
but some of it's just perform ring poorly, getting whipped
by the moment. And that's what happened. That's what happened.
(06:09):
And as much success as the Dodgers had this year,
and look, you could not. It couldn't have been any
better against the Diamonbacks. They were really really good in
the NLCS as well, going in and winning on the
Cub's home field. It was great. And as good as
they were in game one, series was probably lost in
(06:30):
game two when you got to Verlander and you had
Jansen on the hill and you brought him in and
he gave up a run in the eighth and the ninth,
Like you go into oh your and you still have
and you got Kershaw going in Houston. You're in pretty
pretty you're in pretty good shape. But that was a
winnable game last night, and between the manager of course,
(06:51):
started with the picture and into the hitters the choke.
And I do think it's fair to give credit to Kershaw.
I do think it's fair to ask why Alex would
couldn't start last night, why Kershaw couldn't start last night?
Right now? Did Kershaw pitch better because he was down
(07:13):
five runs with you know, uh, with with no pressure? Maybe?
But I think we can we can pretty much sum
up that you Darvish is not a big game pitcher.
I don't think anyone would argue with you today. He
did not have any sort of good side. He's pitching
on full rest, and he could get he couldn't have anybody.
(07:35):
And in the decisions you have to live with that
are the all time bad decisions. The Dodgers choosing to
pursue you Darvish at the trade deadline instead of Justin Verlander.
Of course, Carlos Karia, who's chose to lose half his
stuff as he asked his beautiful fiance to marry him
after the game, and apparently Justin Verlanders on his way
(07:56):
to Italy to marry Kate Upton. Both gonna lose half
their stuff, but do so after. I'm kidding a joke.
After the game. I guess the story is the Astros,
and I guess the story, and you hear from a
lot of people, and I think it's the goodness in
people coming out, you know what. The city of Houston,
they need this. I don't really get that, right, my
(08:22):
The only one is that callous to say, so this
is great for our city. It's it's not bad for
your city. It's it's a good galvanizing. But it's baseball.
I don't know if it helps rebuild so many of
the suburbs and city in parts of the city that
were lost due to the floods, that like, oh, this
is this is for our city, Like mm hmm, okay, sure,
(08:47):
we'll go with it. It's cool to all of us
because all of us are like, yeah, I don't want
to see people displaced, people hurt, but I kind of
feel like it's a non sequitor. And lastly, I think
the game was a complete letdown. I gotta I got
(09:07):
an email and then a call as a drive at
home last night that I had two tickets to the game.
And I'm not you can't if you get if you
work at Fox, somebody from Fox says you had tickets.
It's not like you can go like, oh, I've given
to a buddy, or I can sell them. You have
to use them for yourself. And I had already taken
my son to the game and my wife and kids.
It was too far away, and I was like, you
(09:29):
know what, I told my wife, Listen, we're not gonna go.
We're gonna cook a bunch of food, We're gonna turn
on the we're gonna both our TV is gonna have
the game on because he's gonna get their homework done early.
And then we're going, uh, and then we're gonna go
and we're gonna well, I mean, we're gonna watch the game.
And boy, it was just it was hard to keep
everybody's attention. It was it was. It was a letown,
(09:49):
which so often times. Game Seven's work so great series,
I would guess the better team one. Tanking does in
fact help your franchise if you do it right, if
you get a volume of top picks out of it.
I still think that the Astros apartment and made as
a joke. Balls fly out of there. It's just that's
(10:11):
not real baseball. That's like if the fences were in
at Cours, that's what it would be. Game was a letdown.
Dodgers did choke and uh. Probably the player of the
night last night was Charlie Morton, who was outstanding. Charlie
Moore was nasty last night. But I told you at
(10:33):
the start of the World Series of taking works and
I was right right. How do you think they got Springer?
How do you think they got Korea? How do you
think they got Gariel? How do you think they got
my Colors? Where do you think these guys came from? Like?
How do they get all these guys we don't have them.
They lost for four consecutive years. Purposely, they shed their
(10:56):
roster of all the salary, and then that allowed them
to take on ver Anders salary. That allowed them to
be players at the trade deadline, and they had just
enough pitching, just enough, and they had a home field
advantage against the Yankees, so they survived. Uh was that
a fifth game in that series? But look, I think
(11:20):
baseball is super healthy. DC has got a good team
with a bunch of talent. Cubs have a good team
with a bunch of talent. The Yankees have a good
young team with a bunch of town. Houston has a
good team with a bunch of town. The Dodgers have
a good team with a bunch of town. Those are
all in your most important and Boston has a bunch
of talent. I kind of feel like last year was
(11:42):
about the Cubs. This year's numbers, which are really good,
is more about the health of the sport and the
fact that the sport is healthy in its most important venues.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug gott
Leaps Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app The
smart thing to do here is they're not gonna win.
(12:04):
Their roster is terrible. You got a new GM, so
he can survive a bad year. Sit him down, get
his arm fully fully healthy. Um, Look, I would love
to tell you. I love to tell you. I actually
I don't know if i'd love to tell you, but
I would like to believe that everything's on the up
(12:25):
and up. Like, Oh, he's got this shoulder swordness. It
just won't go away. It's unexplainable. Maybe it's unexplainable because
it doesn't actually exist, right, Like you can't hold Andrew Luck.
You can't tell everybody in the league. Hey, we're holding
Andrew Luck out because we don't want to win, because
we want a really good draft picks, and we don't
want to put him in harm's way behind a depleted line.
(12:48):
And we have a decent quarterback who we'd like to
showcase and maybe trade in the off season, maybe keep
him as the backup. You can't say that, So what
do you say? Like he's got an arm issue? This
reminds me of um, my brother had a teammate named
Marvin at Drake. My brother played for a couple of
(13:09):
years at Drake. Drake said Vision one program Missouri Valley
Conference in Des Moines, Iowa. And Uh, let's say his
first name is Marvin, and he's a terrible free throw shooter,
and at the end of a very big game he
got fouled and the coach says, like you hurt. Marvy's like, nah, coach,
I'm okay, Like no, you're hurt, Marvin, You're hurt. He's like, oh,
(13:31):
I'm hurt because he can't you free tricks? And back
then you used to be able to up. Can't you
free those? Let's pick our best free throw shooter off
the bench and you go check in for old Marvin.
That's what I think is going on with Andrew Luck.
What's the matter with your shoulder? I don't know. That
(13:53):
just doesn't feel right. His career could be in jeopardy
because there's this unexplained shoulder soreness and shoulder plant pain.
The whole thing has been very fluid. Uh. And you
know how people always say I'm not gonna lie to you, right,
but what does that mean you you were lying to
(14:15):
us previously? Or people say no disrespect and then something
disrespectful comes out of their mouth. How about this one.
The one thing I want y'all to understand is that
there's never been an issue one time where I've tried
to mislead. This organization has tried to mislead. This whole
thing has been very fluid. I wish I was better,
(14:37):
uh said Andrew luck And this season, but that's not
the case. I know I'll be better from this. I
know will be a better quarterback, teammate and player from this.
I'm excited for the future. GM cris Boot. I've heard
all sorts of rumors about career ending. It's not the case.
I've not got that from one doctor. Career ending is
putting him. Career ending is putting him on the field
(14:57):
before he's ready to play. That's where we should be concerned.
He'll be fine. He'll be fine. Colts know exactly what
they're doing. You have a coach who nobody wanted to
fire because he's a good dude, and he came back
from cancer and he had a bad general manager to
put him in a bad spot. But ever since that
(15:18):
fake punt Debacco on Monday Night Football or Thursday Football,
whatever Knight was, they're just bad. They're just bad. They
don't have the talent to compete. I told you guys
this the second week of the preseason, and so they're
gonna tank, They're going to reload. They're gonna probably move
(15:39):
on from their current starting quarterback, Jacoby Brissette. Maybe it
becomes their backup because Tolzine is so bad. But if
they can get something back from Brissette, more draft picks,
get a new coach, and start all over with without
They'll probably get rid of t Y Hilton in the
off season since they couldn't trade him. But the offensive
(16:02):
line is bad. T Y Hilton pointed out he wasn't
wrong in terms of his analysis. He was wrong for
pointing it out. You don't want to put Andrew Luck
with a bad shoulder behind that, of course not. It's
the what is the point? Right? It's what is the point?
What is the point? And I think the cults have said,
(16:25):
we don't know, we won't play him. Fox Sports Radio

for Sports Illustrated and this has wildly been uh publicized
here in the last couple of days especially last night.
(16:46):
June fourteen, Sports illustrated Baseball's Great Experiment, an unprecedented look
at how franchise is going beyond moneyball to build the
game's next big thing. Your two thousand seventeen World Series champ.
This in two thousand four and you know who's on
(17:06):
the cover, The guy who hit essentially the game winning,
backbreaking home run last night the m v P of
the World Series. Like it's one thing to call it,
it's another thing to call it and put Springer on
the cover three years before it happens. Who is this
Ben Wryter guy who joins us now on the Doug
(17:28):
Gottlip Show Fox Sports Radio. Um, I need some powerball numbers, Dude,
need some powerball numbers. What do you got from? Everybody
keeps asking that, Doug. If I had the powerball numbers,
I'd probably keep them from my cell, especially because I
didn't make a dime off of disastros thing so far. Okay,
so help me out with this. How did you know, Well,
(17:53):
we didn't know. We didn't know for sure. Right at
the beginning of any given season, the favorite has a
about a chance of winning the World Series, Right, Vegas
will only gives the best team in league chance, So
clearly three years ahead of time. We couldn't be sure,
but we knew something was brewing down there. Like the
reason I went down to Houston to even do the
(18:15):
story was because they were so impossibly historically bad, as
you were just talking about. But we knew that the
front office had really intelligent guys in it who had
had success in St. Louis. They knew what they were doing,
so we kind of wanted to see how that matched up.
And this is before the process in Philadelphia, right, we
haven't really seen this sort of thing before. So I
(18:37):
went down there, spent a few days of them, and
came away thinking that they'd come up with something new,
something unprecedented, and that it's certainly had a chance of
working as soon as two thous Okay, so how was
this different from other teams trying to rebuild their farm system? Well,
first of all, no team had burned it down like
(18:59):
the Astros head when the new front office came in
before the two thousands twelve seasons, the organization was in
a terrible state, had no farm system, very little big
league talent. Video has gone Bagwell was gone. Berkman was gone,
they had nothing to work with it, so they saw
that the only way they could get back to contention
as soon as possible was to go this route. It
(19:21):
was really by necessity. The way they did it was
interesting though. Yes they had all the modern analytics does,
but all teams have that. They're very good at them.
They have a NASA engineer named Sigma Del in their
front office. They know what they're doing as far as that.
But I think what they did that was kind of
revolutionary is they were not rejecting the old sources of data.
(19:41):
They weren't rejecting what the scouts were telling them. They
were synthesizing that information with their cunning edge analytics to
make their decisions, and they weren't trying to keep up appearances.
A lot of people hated it. They were not trying
to make decisions that might get them a few extra
wins in two thousands thirt They were entirely focused on
(20:02):
when they were going to be contenders, and that was
not what happened last year. Well, you know, they's got
a bit unlucky last year obviously two fifty and I
think they jumped everybody's schedule, not just Sports Illustrated but
their own. They did not expect Carlos Correa to come
up at twenty and become essentially the best shortstop in
the in the league, almost right out of the womb.
(20:24):
They didn't accept that, expect that they didn't really have
the depth of the roster to sustain in. But look,
this offseason they added the finishing touches. They started spending
money Josh Reddick, Carlos Beltran, they at Brian McCann. They
added the final pieces they thought that would give them
(20:46):
the veteran leadership, the chemistry to take this next step.
And then, of course, in August, they added the biggest
piece of all with two seconds before that trade deadline,
justin Verlander. Would they have added Verlander if they had
gotten Zack Britain before the trade deadlod the origin the
traditional trade deadline. I don't think so. I really don't
think so. I'm not sure. This is the team that
does not like to give up its prospects to begin with.
(21:08):
They see a lot of value in them. I think
if they have gotten Zack Britain, they would have probably thought, well,
that's our big move. You know, Dallas Kiko probably would
not have spoken out as he did after the July
trade deadline, saying that he was disappointed that they didn't
do anything. Uh No, I don't think so. And who
knows right, And that's the move they made. Zack Britten
is great, but he's not justin Burland or Sometimes the
(21:28):
moves you don't make, even if you want to make
them it doesn't work out, are more important than the
moves that you do. Know, it's a look at this,
and it's this. It's the same thing in uh. In
recruiting in sports, guys tell you all the time, sometimes
the guys you don't take, uh end up becoming more
important than the guys you you do take. Ben Ryder
joining us on the Doug Gotlip Show. Back in two
thousand and fourteen, Um uh, he authored a piece which
(21:51):
was titled Baseball's Great Experiment, Why the Houston Nastros will
be your two thousand seventeen World Series Champions. Of course
that came to Freui shin last night. Um. Not all
their picks have hit. I mean they've They've had some
top picks that have that have not hit, and they
even had an issue signing some top picks as well. Um.
(22:13):
How how difficult has it been even to get prospects
to buy into it. Back before they were this good, well,
you know, um, I think it was difficult to get
them to buy into this new, a new age thinking.
That's why the hiring of a J. Hinch, great communicator
understands both sides, the clubhouse and the front office, was
so important. But you're right. They they're viewed as no
(22:36):
at alls around baseball because they're kind of outsiders, even
though they've been in the game a decade now. Jeff
Luno is a former consultant sig MIGHT all the data
scientists used to work at NASA, so there's a lot
of skepticism about what they're doing. But they don't view
themselves as no at alls. They think they have a
process that will allow them to make more correct decisions
in the competition. They're not going to be perfect. They
(22:57):
whipped on Chris Bryant taking Marcatel, that's for sure. People
forgetting two fourteen at the end of string training, they
outright cut J. D. Martinez, who went on to become
a top five hitter in the game in the next
in the next four years. But look, the fact is
that their correct decisions have far outweighed their misses. Okay,
so uh, this happens every year. Cubs winn't last year
(23:20):
and everybody's like, oh, clubs dynasty starting. And then of
course last night you're like, well, you know you got Corey,
you got all these guys. This is this is a dynasty. Um,
how difficult are the challenges of continuing on this path? Well,
it's difficult for any team in this day and age.
Is the way the baseball playoffs work right there, so
randomizing there so long. This is a rare year and
(23:41):
that's what really seemed like the two best teams in
either league actually made the World Series. But if you
look at the afters, they were not built for one year.
They did not go through all those years of torture
in Houston for a one and done shot at a championship,
and they are set up to be this good next
year the year after that. This year, there not losing
anybody big. Carlos Beltra and a big influence on the
(24:03):
chemistry in the clubhouse, didn't do so much with the plate.
He's probably gone a few minors pieces besides that, But
everybody's coming back, and I think the difference between them
and the Cubs, as you could see the Cubs starting
the crack right. I mean, their pitching staff was a
little thin. They didn't have much depth, and it was aging.
When you have guys in their thirties like John Lester,
(24:23):
John Lackey, even Jake Areta, they're not on the up swing.
The Astros staff is young. Yes, Verlander, who's going to
be their leader for the next two years, is in
his mid thirties, but everybody else is young, should have
his best days ahead of them. Plus they have several
more top pitching staff, top pitching prospects coming up from
the minors, so they're kind of by design intended to
(24:46):
cycle through year after year at least for the next
little while. It's gonna be fascinating to watch. Is there
another team that is in any way mimicking right? Like
the copycat leagues all throughout sports? Uh, and like at
the seventy sixers caused trusting the process have caused other
teams to try and do the same In the NBA,
(25:06):
Are there other franchises that have gutted their own in
an effort to mirror the success of the Astros. There's
a lot of them, and I think that's a problem
with trying to mimic something like this is a lot
of teams can't do the same thing at the same time.
There's only one World Series winner a year. You're fighting
over the same sort of like low priced prospect resources.
But if we look at a team like the White Sox,
(25:28):
certainly right now, the Padres, the Phillies, you know, maybe
the Marlins under Jeter's leadership, there's gonna be up to
a half a dozen teams a year trying to do this.
It's not gonna work. The next Astros are going to
do it in a different way. Great stuff, man, congrats
on congrats on the victory lap. You called it. We
give you credit. Ben Ryder joining us from Sports Illustrated.
(25:49):
He has not to this point given us any Powerball numbers,
but we'll call him every day this week until he does. Thanks, Ben, appreciate, appreciated.
Ben writer from Sports Illustrated joining us. Be sure to
catch lie editions of the Doug gott Leap Show weekdays
at three p m. Easter noon Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio and the I Heart Radio app. The number one
thing you want outside of a quarterback in the NFL
(26:11):
draft is somebody who can pressure the quarterback. They don't
have one. They have to. Joey Bose, of course, was
their their first round pick two years ago after a
lengthy holdout, had an outstanding rookie the rookie year and
has been even better this year. And he joins us
now on the Doug Gotlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Joey,
how are you? I'm good? How are you good? Man? Uh?
(26:34):
This is a this is crazy news. I don't know
if you've heard Deshaun Watson apparently tour his his a
c L Like, look, I know it's a different team
and different city or whatever, but what's your reaction to
the news another big name NFL player done for the year. Yeah,
I just heard overheard you talking and us. It's tragic.
I mean everybody knows he's been having a outstanding start
(26:57):
of his year. So just to see it and anybody
really go down like that sucks. All right? So what's
just been like for you guys? Like, look it it
obviously changed once you got that first win with the Giants. Uh,
disappointing week last week, But give me your how would
you characterize your season to day? Um? I characterize it
(27:18):
as a bad first quarter and and a lot better
second quarter. Um. I mean even even with the lost
the other day, we still were three and one in
our last four games, and I think we we have
some good positive momentum coming into this by weekend, coming
into the second half of the season. How much will
Pairman being back help you? Again? How much will Denzel
(27:42):
being back help you? Oh? I mean that's huge having
a guy like that in the middle. I mean, he's
he's really a game changer, and to have him back,
it's you almost forget about that he's coming back, and
when when you see him, see him practicing, it gets
you excited. Joey Bosa joining us on the Gotlip Show
here on Fox Sports Radio. Uh, dude, eight and a
(28:05):
half sacks are ridiculous numbers. This rule in your career
and we saw this, you know, the second you were
unleashed on the NFL last year, we saw signs of it.
How have you been able to transition from college to
the NFL and what seems to be seamless fashion. How
does that happened so quickly? Um? I think it's a
lot of phases. I mean, obviously the training aspect and
(28:26):
the nutrition. UM. I mean I have a great partner
with partnership with Metrics to fuel me with everything I
need outside supplement wise protein and getting me going for
workouts and just mentally learning from guys and talking to
guys over the last over the last year and trying
to take in as much information as possible about making
it as long as you can in the NFL. So
(28:48):
it's been been a hectic last couple of a couple
of years, but it's been great. All Right, Is your
brother Nick better than you? Sure? I hope so they'd
be pretty cool, I know, But is he in fact? You? Like,
there's people like that's the you go and you look
on the on online, there's people writing articles. If you
had to anyone, if anyone is actually making a judgment
(29:09):
of if he's better than me when he's a sophomore
in college, it wouldn't make much sense. But I mean,
if you're comparing him to me when I was in college,
then yeah, he's definitely better than me as a sophomore.
Why what does he do? What does he do better
than you did? Everything? Like? What? Literally? Everything? He's just
(29:30):
all around better technique, speed, everything, most importantly, listens me
ahead of me. Listen, your dad's a good looking guy.
You're a good looking guy. But I heard people say
he's better than looking than you as well. Well, I
don't know about that one. If you're judging how men look,
that's that's on me, buddy. I look. I think you can.
You can judge how men look without you know, and
(29:52):
not that there's anything wrong with that without going I'm kidding.
Joey Bosa Joying is on the Doug Gotlip Show. Let's
talk to some Ohio State. You saw where they were ranked,
uh in the first first pull behind Oklahoma who did
beat them. But this is fresh out the win over
Penn State. Were you bothered by that first first ranking? No,
I'm not bothered by um. I mean, great win the
other week, and I know for a fact if we
(30:14):
handle what we need to handle and win out, then
we'll be in the top four. But it comes down
to whether they could win the rest of these games
or not. You mentioned your partnership with metrics Okay, who's
a big one. Protein bars helped elite athletes take their
train to the next level. Like do you supplement breakfast
or like is this your dessert? How do you eat
(30:36):
your metrics bars? I'm intrigued by those protein bars actually delicious.
I just had the cinnamon apple one. Uh. It's just
a good snack before after workout or whatever. But I
love drinking the sports drink. It has a lot less
sugar than most of them, and it actually has caffeine
in it, so God knows I need that some mornings.
(30:57):
So um. Yeah, it's great just having the stuff stockpiled
in my in my gym and in my house, so
I have it whenever I need it. All right, A
week off where you're going back home? What do you
What are you doing? Week off? Week off? Any other year,
I would be as home as fast as I possibly can,
But I don't know this this year. I just want
(31:18):
to hang out here. I got a buddy coming in today.
I'll be working out and training, of course, uh, but
mostly golf and video games. What are you playing where? Yeah?
I mean I know the courses where you live. I
live close to where you live. Yeah, we're not sure yet.
We're gonna We're gonna maybe make some road trips here.
A place called Auvre is unbelievable. It's down in down
(31:42):
in San Diego, down in the four seasons. Yeah, I
gotta I have a gift card for like a hundred
and fifty, which I don't think we'll even behalf of
the tea time there, but um, but I want to
make a trip down there possibly and then may may
go in Costa Mesa at the Teammates place. Yeah, over
standing a country club. That's that's a that's a good call.
(32:02):
That those are those are both good calls. R VR
is pretty pre spectacle the puss. You've got to drive
down to Carl's bad. Um that that that's not a
bad way to spend to spend your weekend. Yeah, you
mentioned lifting weights and eating eating metrics bars, Like, are
you okay being labeled as a meat head? Because like
if you're all you're doing is ingesting protein and no
sugar and lifting weights and working out like that's kind
(32:24):
of classic meathead definition. Joey, Well, I guess you could
throw me in the category. Um, I guess my actions
put me in that category, but not so much. I
feel like personality as much. Maybe I don't know. I
guess him in my house, metric bars everywhere. I guess
that classifies in the meathead category. Kind kind of kind
(32:47):
of does help help this, help me solve this problem
for me? Your last home game you take on the
Denver Broncos, you guys wear the powder blues. Everybody loves
the powder blues. Why aren't the powdered blues the primary
home uniform of the l A Chargers. I don't know.
And I'm getting sick of wearing all whites too. I
don't know we should wear those more. I think we
(33:08):
got the color rush coming up soon, which we're pretty
cool those nybe blues all maybe blues, but yeah, I
wish we'd we'd wear the Honestly, the Navy blues are
the dark blues, and uh, and the powder blues more often?
Who impressed you the most? Like, look, your job is
to go kill the quarterback or if the running back
hits the ball? Is there a guy this year? Like?
(33:30):
Do that guy pretty good? That that you've gone up against? Oh? Yeah,
I mean just played Tom Brady, So that was pretty
That was pretty crazy to watch him get out of
some situations and just how we gets through the ball
the open receiver and less than two seconds every single time?
How does how does he do it? Because I'm watching
(33:51):
the game admittedly Charger fan, and you know, like, look,
he's forty, he's not terribly athletic. He runs like he's
dragging a dead body. But he's standing up there and
you got you and Melvin coming at both sides, and
he's still able to get rid of what is what
is the secret now that you've seen it. I don't
know if I knew, I'd whatever year that playing quarterback. No,
(34:15):
it's it's pretty unbelievable. I think just experience and I
mean just he's a different guy and so it makes
him great. Um, did he say anything when he sacked him? No,
we were. We were both arguing whether he was down
or not because it was it was kind of a
close call, and he was saying he was up, and
I was obviously pointing out the ground. But no words
(34:36):
to each other. No, you know, you don't talk trash
to to Tom Brady. Even even you don't talk trash
to Town Brady. I don't think he talks much trash.
He seems like he's really focused on running his operation
out there. All right, Well, listen, best of luck on that.
That's the bys and tries, which I know you gotta
do before your buddy comes over. And then uh, and
can't you know listen, I I if you hit a
(34:57):
ball in somebody's yard. I'm gonna guess and like, oh,
you could play through. But hit him long and straight
this week and enjoy the week off. We'll see against Jacksonville.
Thank you, thanks for having all right Joey Bosa joining
us in behalf of metrics. Fox Sports Radio has the
best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of
our shows at Fox sports radio dot com and within
the I Heart Radio app. The number one thing you
(35:19):
want outside of a quarterback in the NFL draft is
somebody who can pressure the quarterback. They don't have one.
They have to. Joey Bosa, of course, was their their
first round pick two years ago after a lengthy holdout,
had an outstanding rookie the rookie year and has been
even better this year. And he joins us now on
the Doug Gotlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Joey,
(35:41):
how are you? I'm good? How are you good? Man? Uh?
This is a this is crazy news. I don't know
if you've heard Deshaun Watson apparently tour his his a
c L Like, look, I know it's a different team
and different city or whatever, but what's your reaction to
the news. Another big name NFL player done for the year. Yeah,
I just heard for heard you talking and uh, it's
(36:02):
it's tragic. I mean, everybody knows he's been having a
outstanding start of his year, so just to see anybody
really go down like that sucks. All right, So what's
just been like for you guys? Like, look it, it
obviously changed once you got that first win with the Giants. Uh,
disappointing week last week, But give me your how would
(36:23):
you characterize your season to day? Um? I'd characterize it
as a bad first quarter and and a lot better
second quarter. Um. I mean, even even with the we've
lost the other day, we still were three and one
in our last four games, and I think we we
have some good positive momentum coming into this by weekend,
(36:45):
coming into the second half of the season. How much
will Pairaman being back help you? Again? How much will
Denzel being back help you? Oh? I mean that's huge
having a guy like that in the middle. I mean,
he's he's really a game changer, and to have him back,
it's you almost forget about that he's coming back, and
when when you see him, see him practicing, it gets
(37:07):
you excited. Joey Bosa joining us on the Gottlip Show
here on Fox Sports Radio. Uh, dude, eight and a
half sacks are ridiculous numbers. This rule in your career
and we saw this, you know, the second you were
unleashed on the NFL last year. We saw signs of it.
How have you been able to transition from college to
the NFL and what seems to be seamless fashion? How
(37:29):
does that happen so quickly? Um? I think it's a
lot of phases. I mean, obviously the training aspect and
the nutrition. Um. I mean I have a great partner
with partnership with Metrics to fuel me with everything I
need outside supplementalise protein and getting me going for workouts,
and just mentally learning from guys and talking to guys
(37:50):
over the last over the last year and trying to
