a Thursday on The Doug Gottlieb Show before.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
I'm sure I have, but this segment that you're about
to introduce. I can't say that I'm crazy familiar with.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
So maybe it's been a little while for you. It's
gonna be a little while. As we look back as
we do every Thursday.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
You don't call it a throwback throw back Thursday.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
As Jason Stewart would say, don't worry, Doug, I'll take
it from here.
Speaker 5 (01:23):
Whoa Nelly?
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Whoa Nelle? The great thing about Jason Stewart's Keith Jackson
was he doesn't say wo Nelly. He says old Nelly.
And that's what made me laugh so much because it's
wo Nelly. But he does old Nelly because he knows
that it makes me laugh.
Speaker 5 (01:40):
Whoa Nelly.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
We're not going way way back. We're not going back
to Keith Jackson calling the prime of college football the
nineteen seventies. We're not doing that. We go back to
the year that is twenty nineteen, twenty nineteen. Think about
where you were in twenty nineteen. I think, ultimately, when
(02:03):
you look back at twenty nineteen, it was the last
of normal. And we can get into all of that
because COVID changed everything in twenty twenty. But the reason
twenty nineteen is brought up today is because of the
Open Championship. One of the deals when we do this
throwback Thursday, Sam knows it is I will talk at
least a minute about golf in what happened in that year.
(02:24):
And it was in twenty nineteen that Royal Port Rush
got the Open Championship for the first time, ultimately won
by Shane Lowry. There was a lot happening in twenty nineteen,
most notably Tiger Woods won the Masters in twenty nineteen,
his major, fifteenth major title. He was able to grab
(02:45):
the green jacket again at augusta National A month later.
The PGA Championship for the first time was played in May,
as opposed to the previous August date that it had.
Brooks kept going that at beth Page Black US Open
won by Gary Woodland at Pebble Beach. The Doug Gottlieb
Show broadcast live from the event that year, and then
(03:06):
Shane Lowery winning at Royal Port Rush to wrap up
the major year. But twenty nineteen, when you look back
on it will be the year that Tiger won his
fifteenth major and won the Masters again.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
Twenty nineteen was when the US Open was a Pebble Beach. Yes,
I saw you there? Remember I was there? Yes, Yeah,
I think it was on a Friday. It's long drive up.
I don't know. We didn't budget very well. But I'll
say this really quick. I think we too often in
sports do the cliche of it's like something out of
a fairy tale. Tiger winning that Masters after everything that
(03:42):
he had been through to that point, and I know
a lot of it was self inflicted. We always have
to give that caveat That really was one of the
I think, you know, I'm basically forty right now. One
of the incredible sports moments of my entire life was
Tiger so down, so whatever. There so many injuries that
would have sidelined a weaker man holding on in Augustus.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
So as not to pigeonhole you as non golf people,
but do you guys remember when Tiger won?
Speaker 6 (04:13):
I do remember when he won, because it was that
big of a deal.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
But was I watching No?
Speaker 2 (04:20):
No, I think the memory is people remember him walking
back to the clubhouse at Augusta National to sign a scorecard,
and the long That's the thing with Rory when Rory
won the Grand Slam, and a little history lesson in
golf for then Burst I'll let you go. Previously, there
used to be a little shed behind the eighteenth green
at Augusta National, and that's where the players would go
(04:42):
in and sign their scorecard and then leave. But now
they do it in the actual structure of the of
the building and the buildings they have on site next
to the clubhouse. So you have this longer walk, which
allows them to take all the patrons because there aren't
bleachers there, they're all lined up, and allows you to
get that scene. But you didn't always have that scene
(05:02):
in golf, and in fact, only recently have you had
the opportunity to see that. Luckily for us, they did
it before twenty nineteen, so we could see Tiger hugging
his son as he came off the green. We would
always see that. But then the long walk with Charlie
and his family with all the fans around him, and
then we saw it again earlier this year with Rory
walking one of the better scenes that you have in golf.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
I think that was one of the more memorable things
was that both of his kids, you know, because that's
the cliche, right, you know, his kids weren't there to
see him in his prime, so for him to have
that moment with them, I think was one of the
talking points.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
And when he won in nineteen ninety seven for the
first Masters, the lasting image is his dad being there
hugging him as he came off, and so here he
was doing it to his son. But twenty nineteen, for
as great as it was for Shane Lowry and winning
in his home country at Royal Point Rush, it was
the year of Tiger Woods. All right up, you were.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
Up soon as you said, twenty nineteen. There's only one
thing I could think of Joe Lsu. It is statistically
so we always just talk about it in mythological terms.
Sixty touchdowns, fifty six one hundred yards, and I understand
(06:18):
that in hindsight he had justin Jefferson, he had Jamar Chase,
but sixty touchdowns. And the craziest part about that year
was two things. Was one everybody that they beat to
get there. Remember they beat Alabama when they and Alabama
had Tua and Jerry Judy and unfortunately Henry Ruggs and
Devonte Smith. They beat Oklahoma and the College Football Playoff
(06:41):
they beat clems In with Trevor Lawrence in the College
Football Playoff. They wanted Texas. That was the first kind
of indicator that they might be a very special team.
Obviously the coach o angle of it, with everything that
he had been through in his career. I think the
other thing that stands out about that specific season, I
remember talking about it at the time. There was no
(07:03):
indication that it was coming. The previous year sixteen touchdowns
on fifty eight percent completion percentage. And by the way,
if anybody really wants to be mean today, they can
probably find takes of mine from the NFL Draft that
year where I said, well, you know, great year at LSU,
(07:23):
but let's look at what he did as a junior
in twenty eighteen. Also worth noting you probably know this.
You know who was calling plays that year for LSU, right, uh,
Brail Brady, Brady, Joe Brady. And that's another twist to
all of it. So yes, Joe Burrows the face. Obviously
in hindsight, he had Jamar Chase, he had Justin Jefferson,
he had Joe Brady calling plays. But when you say
(07:46):
twenty nineteen, that above all is what stands.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
The funny thing about it is it just wasn't on
the top of my mind. So I had the Rolodex
of all the Brady's. So it was it was Tom,
it was Kyle, it was Mike, Greg, Peter, Bobby. You
had Kyle Brady ahead of Joke. I thought you did.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
I thought you were like, oh, Kyle bro Oh no,
not not I could have.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
I was like, what was the first time again? I
remember it was it was Brady, and I thought, Joe
Brady's done it a good job in the NFL. Didn't
start out great, uh in Carolina, but it's really taken
off in Buffalo. Also in college football that season, two
things number one about Joe Burrow was I loved when
he ran out on Senior Day with the Burrow Yeah
(08:26):
a ux yes on the back for the you know,
nod to uh to all the fans in Louisiana. Great,
great way to honor and play his last game. That
was also when Ohio State got screwed on a Sean
Wade penalty against Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl and then
Justin Fields through the interception in the end zone. There's
(08:47):
a small part of me that's like, I'm kind of
glad they didn't play LSU in the National Championship Game.
I would have loved to actually see what it was
played out, but because of how good ellis he was,
and then you would have the Borough Ohio State tie
into that.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
Not I just Arnie Spaniard and I were on air
for that Clemson Ohio State game. So I don't remember
every detail, but I remember we were the first ones
on air, like the.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
Ref screwed Ohio State. Oh thank you Taurres. Oh gosh,
oh what could have been? What did Iowauld do in
that year? I'm sure we're gonna find out, at least
at some point soon. Maazi, what do you remember about
twenty nineteen?
Speaker 6 (09:23):
All right, twenty nineteen because we're going, you know, because
NBA goes between two seasons, but we're obviously not talking
about the bubble, right or that year. We're talking twenty nineteen.
So that was a year that the Raptors with Kawhi
Leonard won the NBA Championship. And there's things I remember,
obviously his shot against Philadelphia, right like before going to
the finals, KD getting hurt in Game five. I was
(09:46):
sitting at a restaurant in downtown Disney that no longer
is there. I was sitting at the bar and obviously
having a drink I watching the game, and then he
goes down and everyone just like had a reaction, even
though it didn't see like anyone cared about the Warriors
at that time, especially here in so Cal. You know,
it's Lakers and it's maybe a little clipper, but it
(10:08):
didn't seem like anyone cared. But it was like Katie
going down. Everyone just had a gasp at the bar
and you kind of knew, all right, this is let's
wrap it up. And then the Raptors won it. I
think the following game in six games, right, So that's ever.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
Yeah, that's that's what.
Speaker 6 (10:25):
I remember of twenty nineteen because I like basketball, but
Kawhi Leonard, Kawhi Leonard and the Raptors, can.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
I come in on it? So it's funny you bring that up.
And it's funny you bring up what you brought up
because I remember the clinching night. I woke up the
next day to drive to the US Open, so it
all comes together. Got up early the other thing I remember,
and Dan cover your ears, but I think it was
game one or game two of the Eastern Conference Finals
that was either Yiannis's first or second MVP trophy and
(10:54):
Kawhi was just dunking on everyone and it's crazy, and
I think, like we being sports fans, we'll tell our
kids in our grand there was I think literally a
two month window where it's like, oh, Kawhi Leonards the
best player in the world, absolutely, and then it just
you know, and it's unfortunate. And I'm not trying to
be sarcastic about.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
Which I am, of course, but it was like, you can't.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
Deny that at that exact moment in time, It's like, oh,
he's the freaking dude. And I just remember watching Game
one of the Bucks series. You know again, Yanni's no
just MVP whatever, and it's like, oh, Kawhi is the
best player on this floor. He's the best player in
the world. And it was a very short window, and
it's obviously unfortunate. We haven't seen much of it.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
The funny thing about that, and I'll get to it
in a sect, but Manti, you remember what I've told
you about that seventy six Ers shot right where I've
said as a Bucks fan, I was like, good, I'm
glad they get to play the Raptors, and I'm the Sixers.
I wanted them to face Toronto. The Bucks were up
two zero in the Eastern Conference Finals. Game three, they
lost in Toronto in overtime. It was a game that
(11:57):
Toronto had led, uh threw out. The Bucks were fortunate
to force overtime. But again, you force overtime, you have
a chance to win it. Milwaukee could have been up
three to zero in that series. Instead, they lose Game
three and honestly like it sucked the life out of them.
They lost Game four. Then when it game the rest
of the series, Toronto won it in six. When they
went to Game six in Milwaukee, Yeah, I was just like, oh,
(12:18):
here we go again. And it was to that point
of what Kawhi was. But you're absolutely You're absolutely right
about that, Ryan Berschinger.
Speaker 4 (12:26):
So for twenty nineteen, the first thing I have to
mention first and foremost, twenty nineteen is the year I
met my wife.
Speaker 3 (12:32):
Ah, twenty nineteen, this year I got married.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
Yeah, boy, you look man, Birs just made you geeze.
Speaker 4 (12:44):
And I also bring that up because ten days prior
to us meeting was when the Dodgers were eliminated from
the postseason. What I remember about twenty nineteen In the postseason,
of course, the Washington Nationals ended up beating the Ashos
in seven games. It was a notable World Series because
the road team won every single game of that World Series,
which is wild. The Nationals, on their path to the
(13:05):
World Series, eliminated the Dodgers in the Division Series. The
Dodgers won a one hundred and six games that season,
and that one was extra brutal because as Dodger fans
were coming off of back to back World Series losses
and a team coming into the postseason with one hundred
and six wins. Cody Bellinger won MVP that season, so
as stacked roster as it was for a few seasons there.
(13:27):
And then they lost Game five at home because for
whatever reason, Clayton kershawf famously a relief pitcher, came in
in the seventh inning and pitched to both Anthony Rendon
and Juan Soto and gave home run, gave up home
runs to each of them. The Nationals then took the
lead and went on to win that game. Howie Kendrick
(13:47):
hit like a three run bomb off of Joe Kelly,
putting it out of reach, and it was it was
miserable and as as a Dodger fan, it felt like, wow,
this is it's really never going to happen.
Speaker 5 (13:58):
You know.
Speaker 4 (13:58):
Thankfully it has, so you don't have to feel bad
for me anymore. It's okay, it's okay.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
I'll tell you what I was doing. The night of
Game seven of the World Series. My wife's friend had
an event at her house where these people were signing
their cookbook how I Channel eleven you talk about love
and you're getting married and you meeting your your future bride.
(14:23):
My wife says, you know, her friend, she's having the authors.
She knows one of the authors. They wrote a cookbook
about Armenian food. She's going to have a signing. They're
going to kind of explain it. She's going to do
it in her She has a garage that set up
like a really cool library. It's actually a really neat setup.
(14:44):
But I'm like, well, it's Game seven. I do this
for a living. So they set up the TV in
their house. Because everybody was outside at this, I could
then just watch the game in the living room while
they went out. And if it was game four, I
would have just been like, all right, I'll be with you.
But when it was Game seven.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
That's kind they understood. They got it, yes, well, really
quick to tie all these stories together, similar to you
Kawhi twenty nineteen, me getting married. I've told this story
a million times. You've probably heard it. I don't know
if you ever not. I know Jason Martin's probably heard
it thirty times. Kawhi signed and Paul George got traded
during my wedding, like it was the craziest you know
(15:28):
what of so Kawhi is it? Is he a laker?
Will he go back to Toronto?
Speaker 2 (15:33):
Da Da Da?
Speaker 3 (15:34):
And eleven o'clock everyone's on the dance floor having a
good time. Electric slide boom, Kawhi signing, Paul George traded
right now, and everyone's like, Paul George, Paul George, how
did this happens? And there's picture I've sure have seen it.
It's like there's pictures of everyone, well, the guys at
my wedding, like just staring at a phone, like, WOJ
(15:56):
tell us what's going on because we are so and
you could ask probably asked Jason and Mike about this
because it happened at like eleven oh five, right as
they were going off air, right, I think Jonas was
doing overnights at the time. So yeah, So I was
twenty nineteen as well.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
Iowa Sam twenty nineteen. For you bring back any memories.
Speaker 7 (16:13):
I'll be quick because every time I bring up Iowa
football when Doug is in, he just shouts me down.
He out on the movies nine minutes ago. Oh we'll
get to that, Sam. I want to hear about every
punt from the twenty nineteen season. You know, it's funny,
you know, the whole like punting is winning thing was
only like a couple of seasons like there they had
decent offenses in fact, when in the COVID year they
(16:33):
were like the third best offense in the Big Ten,
went under Brian Fernce.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
But I digress. Uh.
Speaker 7 (16:38):
That season, Iowa faced five ranked opponents in football. They
lost their first three. They still churned out a nine
and three regular season. They clipped undefeated Minnesota at home
towards the end of the season, so it was kind
of like the cherry on top. Then they went and
played USC number twenty two USC in the Holiday Bowl
whipped up on him as the last game played at
Qualcomm Stadium.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
I was there.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
It was in Iowa blow.
Speaker 7 (17:02):
There's something about Hollidy Bulls for Iowa. They go and
they win them and then when they go to Rose
Bulls they just get trounced. So it's something like San Diego.
They feel safe and secure, then then when they're in
Pasadena they just get their pants pulled down.
Speaker 2 (17:12):
Well, I want to just I want to wrap it
up with this. We're not gonna have time for movies
or music, and I know, what do you want to
play it as as we go out? Because I want
to make that point.
Speaker 7 (17:22):
I would just say this did interesting collaboration. Everyone was
rocking out to this in twenty nineteen. Let's hear it
in true Jason Stewart fashion. This is what Kyle Guy
listened to in his headphones. There you go prior to
the Final four in Minnesota. Wow, As we didn't even
touch on the craziness of that final four, what led
(17:45):
Virginia to getting to the final four, how close Purdue
was at that time to ending their streak, to have
Mama doing yeah d'akite end up hitting the shot at
the buzzard a force overtime, and then Guy getting fouled
in the corner and making the three free throws that
he needed to to bea at Auburn and then overtime
against Texas Tech Magnificent Final four.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
You know what's funny is I said earlier with the
Tiger twenty nineteen Masters, and everyone's like, oh, it's like
a fairy tale. That the one that I feel like
it's so overhyped. And he came up this week in
nerdy college basketball circles. But Tony Bennett, they lost to
a sixteen seed and he rallied the troops and it's like, yeah,
but losing to a sixteen seed is still on the resume,
(18:29):
Like and oh, by the way, they didn't have DeAndre Hunter,
who's a ten year NBA VET at this point, eight
year NBA VET whatever. But it came up this week
because let me just put it this way, The Athletic
did a poll of top college basketball coaches of the
twenty first century. Tony Bennett was very high on the list.
It was a very hot topic in the Yukon community,
(18:49):
which has two separate coaches which have won.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
Multiple national champs. Bid Yukon be disrespected.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
I mean, how is Jim Calhoun the thirteenth best coach
of the century. I so, I guess it. But anyway,
but that was twenty nineteen Tony Bennett, and that's I
think it's a little bit overrated.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
I'm kidding, and that's twenty nineteen for us.
Speaker 6 (19:11):
You don't call it.
Speaker 5 (19:12):
A throwback.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
Auburn so close and yet now so far away Texas Tech.
Do you remember, No, that's what I said. Though you
meet him in overtime? Yes, yes, he's erin Torres. I'm
dan byer Motzi's hanging with us, as is Ryan Burschinger
and Iowa Sam. Thank you everybody for your contributions. Coming
up next, NBA insider Kurt Helm joins us. I call
him Kurt Sexual Healing. He'll talk about the signing of
(19:38):
Bradley Beal and there's even more drama with Joel Embiid
in Philadelphia. We'll talk about that next on Fox Sports Radio.
Thanks for listening to The Doug Gotleb Show podcast.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
Be sure to catch us live every weekday three to
five Eastern twelve two Pacific on Fox Sports Radio. Find
your local station for The Doug Gottlieb Show at Fox
Sports Radio dot com, or stream us live every day
on the iHeartRadio app by searching FSR.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
Joining us now, or good buddy at Basketball Talk. Kurt
Healin joining us here on Fox Sports Radio to talk,
hoops and so much more. I again, I tabbed you
Kurt sexual healing a long time ago. I still hope
nobody stole that title, Kurt, But great to talk to again.
How are you?
Speaker 5 (20:19):
Yeah? Even my wife doesn't want to take that title
for me, So I don't know what to say. Man,
I'm not sure where I go with it.
Speaker 1 (20:24):
All Right?
Speaker 2 (20:25):
What does the lead NBA rider managing editor at NBC
dot com think of the Bradley Beal signing with the
Los Angeles Clippers.
Speaker 5 (20:33):
I think it's a good signing for the Clippers at
that price. Look, the question wasn't could Bradley Beal still
play some like? Bradley Beal is still a solid player, even
if Beast declined a little. It was the fifty million
dollars was kind of the issue, making teams balked. The
Clippers get, amit you five point three million this year?
That's a good salary. And he steps right into a
(20:55):
role for them. Everybody in the league knew this was
going to happen the second they traded Norm Powell Like this,
he steps right into the role Norm Powell had for
them last year, kind of off the bench runs the
second unit can play next to James Harden, shoot threes,
defend a little, give them twenty five to thirty solid
minutes to night and we're gonna see if Field can
still do that. I kind of think he's going to
(21:15):
be I know, if he's going to be as good
as Norm Powell was last year. Who was I think
people kind of slept on that because nobody was watching
the Clippers. He was like a borderline All Star. He
was really good last year. But I think he'll be solid.
So I think it at that price, man, it's a
good signing.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
Yeah, if Lebron was going to sit out the game,
Norman Paul was the one who caught the expense of
that deal, the whole deal he could get a play
it in the game. Sorry, go ahead erin.
Speaker 3 (21:37):
No, it's okay. I was actually gonna ask the most
cliche NBA sports talk radio question imaginable, which is about
Lebron James and basically, is there like, is there a
market for him? Is there a scenario where he isn't
a Laker? Because I just look at a guy making
fifty three million next year all of the caveats that
(21:57):
come with that, and I think it's fun to talk
about Lebron James hypothetically on another team this coming season.
I just don't know how that's realistic.
Speaker 5 (22:06):
You kind of nailed it like this. Look, I just
got back because six days in Vegas was enough. Man,
I had to get out. But I I mean, at
six days in Vegas, that's what the topic at Summer League.
Everybody wanted to talk about it. But kind of like
you said, everybody wanted to talk about it, and within
about a minute the conversation. Conversation turned to a shrug.
Because Lebron has a no trade clause, so he's not
(22:29):
going to go first off. Historically has never given money back,
right Like he He's not like, hey, hey I don't
need all fifty million. No, that's not how Lebron has
ever operated. He signed the contract, he gets his money.
The other part of that is since he has no
trade clause, he completely controls the process and where he's
going to go. And he's only going to go to
(22:50):
a couple of teams, like he might be open to
New York or Cleveland or you know, you can come
up with a couple where he might be interested, but
then put together a trade and it falls apart quickly,
like there's just no Cleveland is a favorite example, like
a lot of fans wanted to go back there. They
are over the second apron, which means they can't even
aggregate players in that trade. It has to be a
one for one swap of almost exact money. They can't
(23:11):
take back more money. The Lakers can't really take back
more money. There's just no deal to be made. And
it's kind of that way across the board everywhere you look.
So I know it's been written about. I kind of
followed up with what Dan Roiki wroad, but everybody assumes
right now he is a Laker, probably all of next season,
now next summer. Then it gets interesting.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
Kurt heil enjoining us here on Fox Sports Radio. He's
herein Tores. I'm Dan Byer in for Doug Gottlieb. I
was here the morning that Lebron opted in and ended
up not getting an extension or getting a one and
one from the Lakers. How much did that catch the
rest of the league off guard? Because that's my thought, Kurt,
you can correct me if I'm wrong that no other
(23:53):
team was built or ready to maybe have Lebron this season.
How much did that play into it? In the other
team's being surprised.
Speaker 5 (24:02):
There were teams with some optionality there just because everybody
was everybody was still playing the what about Yiannis game? Right,
And there was plenty of market for Yannis at a
similar price point, just because at this point in their careers,
with Yannis being like ten years younger, he's just better, right,
Like Yannis is still a guy you can build a
championship team around. So there was some optionality, but there
(24:27):
wasn't much. And I think you got it right when
the reaction around the league was largely, oh, he opted in.
He doesn't. He didn't use his leverage to get a
second year or anything. He just opted in and released
what was a W was gonna call it a passive
aggressive statement, a semi aggressive statement. It was a little
more than passive. Through Rich Paul, it really read around
(24:48):
the league as like, I'm not happy not being like
he's been the focus of every team he's ever been on, right,
He's been the focus and he's not now, and it's
kind of a weird vibe for him.
Speaker 3 (24:58):
I think, yeah, no, I I actually I was talking
to my wife about this exact thing. We live in
LA and I was kind of explaining like it's just
the first time since he was sixteen that everything isn't
built around him. I actually, I don't want to turn
this into a Lebron segment, but I think it's inevitable.
I will ask you because I feel like, and I
know I believe you at least used to live in
southern California current I don't know, Okay, Yeah, I wanted
(25:20):
to ask you because I do think living in LA.
I'm not a born and bred LA or Lakers fan whatever.
I think it's an interesting conversation about what his legacy
would be assuming that nothing crazy happens, and what we
assume is his final season next year, because yes, he
brought a title to the city. Yes they made a
Western Conference finals, but you could correct us. I mean
(25:41):
multiple mis playoffs, multiple first round exits, including this year,
and we know what the standard of the Lakers is
with all of the all time greats. I would just
be curious if next season goes as planned they don't
win a championship, because I don't think they're among the favorites.
What do you think his legacy specifically as a Laker
will be to that specific fan base.
Speaker 5 (26:01):
Yeah, first off, they're not winning a championship this year
without some changes. Really, the only thing they lack is
defense and shooting. But aside.
Speaker 2 (26:14):
Doug's famous line is other than that, Missus Lincoln, how
is the show.
Speaker 5 (26:18):
Pretty pretty much the same thing as a Laker. It's
a second tier thing, right, Like he did bring a championship.
He was the face of the franchise for a while
for years and filled the building. But he's not going
to be Kobe Magic Shack, you know one Jerry West.
(26:43):
He's a little ahead of Eddie, he's behind George Miken. Still,
it's but it's kind of a second tier thing, largely
because of just he was. I mean, he's been with
the Lakers. This would be the eighth season, I believe,
So it's not like it's no time, but it is.
It is one ring, and it's not quite the same
(27:03):
iconic legacy that you know, Kobe spent his entire career
there and did all this Magic spent his entire career
there and did you know West, same thing. So it's
just a little bit of a different vibe because Lebron
bounced around a little bit like that. So I would
say that's kind of the difference. But it is definitely
second with the Lakers alone. It's second tier. Winning that
(27:24):
championship in LA. And how well he's still playing at
age forty is part really part of and kind of
at the heart that that legacy and how good he's
been for so long is at the legacy of his
goat argument right like that he's still He's still I
was putting together my vote last year. I'm like he's
second team All NBA. He is still a top ten
(27:44):
player in the league at forty and and that's insane.
Speaker 2 (27:48):
Kurt heal enjoining us here on Fox Sports Radio. He's
erin Torres. I'm Dan Byer in for Doug kur At,
the lead NBA writer for MBSC sports dot Com covering
the association. I do have some summer league questions, but
I've got i't won more of a big name in
the NBA. And it's this latest profile put out by
ESPN on Joel Embiid in the seventy six ers. Now
you got Paul George with another knee surgery. Things doesn't
(28:10):
seem to be a great offseason for Philadelphia, although the
draft wise they could be working out all right, But
where are the Sixers at this point? And should there
be any concern that Joel Embiid's worried about locker room
leaks as opposed to maybe his health and everything next season.
Speaker 5 (28:28):
Yeah, you should be worried about everything with the Sixers,
locker room leaks, knees hips, feet, you know. I guys,
I'm honestly for later tonight or tomorrow. I was putting
together my NBA Power rankings that will come out, like
I said, later tonight or tomorrow morning, depending on what
my editor wants. But I have them. I think fourteenth
(28:50):
in the middle, and I'm like, this is either too
high or too low. And I don't know. I don't
know what to do with that team because if it clicks,
like you said, well, Vja Edge Home's really nice, really
athletic for people who haven't got to see him play. Stylistically,
he's not as good as Anthony Edwards, but he plays
with that kind of downhill athletic force, like he's that
(29:11):
style of player. You put him back there with Jared
McCain and and they're a point guard and suddenly you've
got like a really nice combo. But it all still
hinges on Embiid and Paul George, like with Tyres Maxy.
They got a future with those guys, but it's still
all about George and Embiid being healthy and now they're
having both having some offseat, you know, coming back, and
(29:31):
I don't know if we're gonna be ready for training camp,
and yeah, I don't know, man, I generally don't know
what to do with that team.
Speaker 3 (29:38):
All I was gonna say last one for me. You
mentioned the power rank. He's certainly not going to ask
you to reveal too much, but is there a team
that maybe maybe you're either a little bit higher on
or a little bit lower on than the consensus.
Speaker 5 (29:51):
Then the consensus. I'm really high on Orlando. I think
they're I think they're third in the East and climbing fast.
The Desmond Bane pickup was great. They got some shooting
to go. Tyas Jones was kind of a perfect little
backup point guard fit. I really like where that team
is headed. The other team who had a really good
offseason in the East and the East just feels more open,
(30:14):
Like Houston had a great off season and everybody knows
it and they're contenders, but Atlanta had a really nice offseason, guys,
and like suddenly they get Jalen Johnson back and healthy,
which would be huge because he was monster last year
until he got injured. They got some better depth and
everything around them. And if Poorzing, like if porzingis is healthy, man,
(30:38):
that that's another team to be top four and a
kind of a threat in the playoffs in the East
because they've got all the pieces if they can just
if it just comes together right For Quinn Snyder, I'm
really intrigued by them.
Speaker 2 (30:51):
Atlanta and Orlando a new world Eastern Conference in the NBA.
All right, before we let you go, Curtie Elin, after
six days in Vegas, what are your what's your biggest
Summer league takeaway from what you saw in Sin City?
Speaker 5 (31:06):
Oh wow, look at the top of the list. I'll
give you the one. Cooper Flag is as good as
the hype. Like he was struggled a little with his
shot in his first game. Carter Bryant did a nice
defensive job on him for the Spurs for a stretch.
But the end of the day, what's great about him
is like even when his shot wasn't falling, his floor
(31:27):
is like multiple time All Star because he just defends
and he hustles and he gets points in transition and
he can do all this. He does everything else well.
And if like your concern is just like he's got
to work on his handles and his his you know,
ability to create offense, A little like that will come
so he lives up to the hype. I'll tell you
the other guy who's just fun, Yang Hansen, the Chinese.
(31:51):
Like we all went who what seem like he's a
second round pick. I like, he's got to get a
lot stronger. His defense is as bad as advertised. It's
it's an issue. He's fun.
Speaker 2 (32:03):
You said fun, You said Carter Bryant. I thought as well,
lost of what he did for San Antonio.
Speaker 5 (32:08):
I love that pick. Again, there's a guy where the
offense needs to come along. But the fact that you're
going to go out on on with what they've got
out there. Look, the aarn't Fox is a pretty good defender.
People kind of forget. You're gonna get around Fox, or
you're gonna have to fight around Dylan Harper, who's long
and athletic and a really good defender, or you get
by Carter Bryant on the wing. You're like, man, that
(32:29):
was a lot of work. Oh it's Wemby, Sure, that's
going to be a top ten defensive team this year,
and as their offense starts to click. You like when
you talk to people in Vegas about like the future,
and everybody's like, right now, right, you got to get
past Oklahoma City and and did Houston do enough to
Denver who had a great offseason? Do enough? You start
(32:50):
talking two or three years down the line, they're all like, yeah, no,
San Antonio's gonna be so good when it all They've
got a lot of good young players. Wemby started not
starting to figure it out. He's ten best player in
the world. He's gonna win Defensive Player of the Year,
and he's still got so much more growth. Like it's yeah,
that's gonna be a beast down there in a couple
of years. Man.
Speaker 2 (33:10):
We both growth as a professional and maybe scaringly enough,
maybe physically, who knows, but Kurt Healing, thanks so much
for the time. If he grows anymore, I don't know
what we're gonna get from Wemby, but uh, he's.
Speaker 5 (33:22):
Not gonna be able to fit in any He's.
Speaker 2 (33:27):
Very very well. Kurt, Thanks for the time. I always
love talking you enjoy the rest of the summer. Appreciate it.
Take care Man Kurt Healing, lead NBA writer for embercsports
dot com. He's Aaron Torres. I'm Dan Byer. Second round
picks are now being signed, but there's still one first

Sam Monzi is going to give us the press in
just a little bit. I do want to ask again
just to kind of put a bow for those of
you that may have missed the SPI's last night. Sam,
do you have any any of the highlights from the
(34:26):
SP's that maybe somebody may have missed, and the.
Speaker 3 (34:29):
S goes to some dude named Doug, some dude name
a rat.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
All right, congret if you missed it. There's a little
little taste of it. Who knows, maybe we'll even have
more during the press. But in the meantime, here's Moncey
the press. Some dude named Doug.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
Congratulations to him.
Speaker 2 (34:51):
Yes, why not? Why not?
Speaker 3 (34:53):
All right, fella?
Speaker 6 (34:55):
So what are the stories in the NFL that we've
been hearing about the last couple of weeks. Is the
contract dispute between the Bengals and their first overall pick
in the first round, well, the first round pick, seventeenth
overall defensive end Shamar Stewart reports that there's disagreement that
he's left Texas A and M coach Mike Elko. There's
a story on ESPN that he squashed any speculation that
(35:20):
Stewart could possibly return to college, saying that that's not happening.
He is there, he's working out with us, he likes
working out with us, he likes our program.
Speaker 3 (35:30):
We look forward to seeing.
Speaker 6 (35:31):
Him in a Bengals uniform and wish him the best
of luck.
Speaker 3 (35:33):
Somebody sent me that story this week, like oh, could
Shamar Stewart be eligible? I'm like, he's going to play
for the Bengals stops. Yes, thank you, coach Elko, thank
you Monk.
Speaker 6 (35:42):
Yes, but he is there, he is working out and
you know, playing with them right now.
Speaker 2 (35:47):
Yes, if this continues, like if all the second rounders
are signed and he's the last one, right, like, it's
gonna stick out like a sore thoughts.
Speaker 6 (35:56):
It's already sticky out. It's all right, but you're right
now that second rounders are sign Just quick, do we have.
Speaker 2 (36:01):
Do you have more of a recap from last night?
Speaker 5 (36:03):
Dale?
Speaker 2 (36:04):
Are the nominees for the best Championship performance?
Speaker 5 (36:06):
Ah Deeljazeem?
Speaker 2 (36:09):
All right, the wickedly talented?
Speaker 3 (36:12):
Ah? Congratulations?
Speaker 2 (36:14):
Interesting? All right, Savis, give us the thumbs up. If
there's any more that we haven't gotten to for anybody
that may have missed the SP's last night, well.
Speaker 6 (36:22):
You figure that out. I'll let you know that TJ.
Watt's making a lot more money. He was already making
a lot of money. Now he's gonna make even more money,
becoming the highest paid non quarterback in NFL history for
the second time in his career. He and the Steelers
reached an agreement today three years, one hundred and twenty
three million dollar extension. It includes one hundred and eight
million fully guaranteed as signing.
Speaker 3 (36:40):
It's forty one million.
Speaker 6 (36:42):
Per year average, so it's the highest. He just surpassed
Jamar Chase who's making forty point twenty five, Miles Garrett
making forty, Danil Hunter thirty five point six, Max Crosby
thirty five point five, Justin Jefferson Justin Jefferson thirty five.
So that's those are the non quarterback contract that he
just hearn Taurus.
Speaker 8 (37:01):
His take on these signings, I give credit to Rob
Parker Odd Couple. He said, every year we freak out
about all these guys that are holding out want new contracts.
He says, name me one that doesn't get signed, And
ever since then it has changed my whole perspective on
all of these stories.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
So the funny thing is, I think the news actually
broke when Aaron Rodgers signed his contract because there was
no way the Steelers were going to go into this
season without TJ. Watt, So he was going to get
his deal, and if you let it go into the
training camp, you're risking injury. If he's not doing stuff.
This way, he gets acclimated and can have a normal
training camp. Yeah, it shouldn't be much of a surprise.
Speaker 6 (37:36):
Speaking of training camp, the Colts are getting ready for
their training camp, and apparently Anthony Richardson that shoulder injury
that he had, he's already recovered. They're saying he's throwing.
He's preparing to report to training camp. So all of
a sudden, we have a quarterback.
Speaker 2 (37:50):
Competition controversy in Indianapolis. Exactly. It's not just going to
be Daniel Jones.
Speaker 3 (37:56):
It's just just say least interesting quarterback controversy.
Speaker 2 (37:59):
But there's also, I hate to say it, there's also
the risk that Anthony Richardson could get hurt again. That's
that's aside from the play. It's also his injuries that
make him not be able to progress and get better
at quarterback. It's just been a mess so far. So
I don't know if we're still out of the woods.
Speaker 3 (38:17):
He could also just be fully healthy and get tired
and ask out of games to that that also could happen.
Speaker 2 (38:21):
I think we have another look back at the SP's
last night. Good miss it if you missed it? What
do we miss?
Speaker 4 (38:27):
Now? Here are the nominees for the best athlete men's sport.
Speaker 3 (38:32):
How about home Off.
Speaker 2 (38:35):
For JT? The Brick.
Speaker 3 (38:39):
And the sp For least interesting quarterback controversy goes to, Yeah, okay.
Speaker 2 (38:49):
We got the toilet.
Speaker 3 (38:50):
That's that's Anthony Richardson.
Speaker 2 (38:54):
Started with. And with a toilet, they're never gonna want
us back for Doug, We're in for Caveno and rich
next year. I'm Fox Sports Radio.
