Speaker 1 (00:01):
Boom, What Up America, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio.
We'll try and be the James Brown, late great James
Brown of radio, hardest working man in show business. Feeling
a little bit for Dan Patrick. This morning. You might
have seen me on Colin Cowherd show, heard me on
Colin Cowherd Show. We did a digital piece for Facebook

(00:24):
Live and the Twitter site for college basketball Fox Sports Radio,
and now I am like I will be the rest
of the week. Um, tomorrow from Nashville, and Thursday from
Birmingham and Friday from Pittsburgh. Will be traveling, but the
Doug Gotlieb Show will come live and direct to you
from uh from wherever we are. UM, and I'm actually

(00:46):
gonna do some games on Facebook. Facebook is of course.
I'd like to say Facebook's the future. It's really the now,
truly now, and um two billion users plus on Facebook. Yeah,
there'll there'll be some eyes on that doing the three
Facebook games in three days, so that'll be fun and
still with you every afternoon or midday, depending on where
you're listening to this show. We appreciate it. Brad Stevens,

(01:08):
head coach of the First Place Celtics, who did lose
last night, so I do not take credit. Is not
a Gottlie curse. If you lose the night before you
join me. Of course we will grant him a win
in his next game, but Brad Stevens will join us
upcoming in fifteen minutes here on the program, we have
a lot to get to. Let's begin with Monday night
football and so ends an incredibly boring weekend in the

(01:31):
National Football League, but it ends with Joe Flacco winning.
Joe Flacco one hey, one, um, Look, I don't know
how many times we can do this in different ways
and different sports. But if you keep asking the same

(01:53):
question and you aren't getting the answer that you feel
like is appropriate, you know that the tough answer, the
hard answer, is in fact the hard truth. Remember a
couple of years ago and Joe Flacco before he won
the Super Bowls? Is Joe Flacco elite? Should Joe Flacco
get elite money? And of course he led the Ravens
to a Super Bowl? And I'll be the first admit

(02:16):
that Joe is uh even more than Jeter. Like Derek
Jeter gets credit for being a great clutch player. What
Derek Jeter was able to do is be the same
player in the postseason he was in the regular season.
Like the stats are eerily similar, and in many ways,
I would rather be seen as clutch than good, right
Like Robert Ory is not one of the great power

(02:38):
forwards of all time. But damn it sure seemed like
he made a lot of big shots, didn't it. And
the indelible image of the Super Bowl, and of course
our knowledge that he cashed in. He he put his
reputation on the line, he cashed in on winning a
championship strikes me. He has among the most memorable parts

(03:02):
of that super run. Sure was ray Lewis, but the
fact is ray Lewis hurt more than helped the Ravens
on the field that they went at him, not away
from him. Sure, it was the blackout game to which
Colin Kaepernick in the Niners nearly came from behind and
one albeit they were not able to score on a
fade pattern, something he doesn't throw well and which is
completed at a very low rate. But the biggest story

(03:28):
from the Baltimore Ravens winn the Super Bowl couple years
ago was Joe Flacco is the elite and if the
the and if the initial answer or the answer that's
repeatedly given doesn't seem to measure up. It's because the
hard answer is the true answer. Now, do I think
that Joe Flacco has gotten worse? I actually do member

(03:50):
He suffered a debilitating a c L injury. Remember he
had a bad back to start the year. He is
not surrounded by nearly the talent he has been surrounded
in the past. They don't have a running game to
speak of, they don't have Steve smith Um. There have
been plenty of players that have come and gone, and
offensive coordinators that have that have come and gone. But

(04:13):
the fact is that we keep trying to think this
narrative of Joe Flacco having won a Listen, he won
a super Bowl. Hey, Listen, he won a super Bowl.
And I don't think that puts him in the trend
deal for just hand the ball off and manage the
clock game manager mode. But if you want to tell
me Joe Flacco is elite, that's fine. I have enough
data now to prove that you're wrong. It doesn't mean

(04:33):
that he's a bad guy. It doesn't mean that he's
a horrible player. It doesn't mean that he should be
embarrassed to show himself in public, But can we be
honest he's just okay, and just okay is probably over
selling it. He's probably getting that super Bowl pass. And

(04:53):
that's what you get. You win this World Series, you
get a World Series pass. You win a college football championship,
you get a call a football pass, you win an
NBA championship, We'll give you an NBA Championship pass. When
the truth is that Joe Flacco has been mostly the

(05:14):
same guy his entire career, and that is just not
that in an elite quarterback. That's of mostly an average
quarterback and even some below average quarterback. Here Joe Flacco
on his team's chances to make the super Bowl. We
want to win the super Bowl. I've been as league
long enough to know if you don't win the super Bowl,

(05:35):
it doesn't mean anything. And if we believe we can
win the super Bowl with how we're playing right now,
I'm all for it, I really am. But I mean,
you guys, can you know we can all take a
look at that and say that it's probably not super realistic.
We need to go out there and we need to
go get it, and we need to be better on
our side of the ball and order for that happening.
And look, he says and does all the right things.
He is not a problem off the football field. He's

(05:57):
not even a problem. He's not a problem in the
locker room. And I would say that his general statistics
are better than his stats this year, which nine touchdowns
and eleven interceptions. That's his actual stats this year. But
here we are in the era where everybody should throw
for three thousand occasionally four thousand. He did throw for

(06:19):
four thousand yards last year, but that's because they were
not a good team. Fifteen picks last year. He's generally
about a twenty to twenty five touchdown guy, a ten
to fifteen interception guy. That's what he is. He is
average Joe. He is just average Joe Flacco. And this

(06:41):
year he's been slightly below average. He's throwing shorter crossing routes.
He's not challenging people deep down the field. Some of
that is the personnel that surrounds him. Some of that
is the fact they don't have a running game, but
some of that is Joe Flacco. When people kept asking
is the elite is the elite? Is the elite? And
and the answer never really satisfied you. It's because the

(07:01):
hard answer was no, he's not. But it's hard to
say that somebody who want a super Bowl, somebody has
performed better than expected in the playoffs isn't considered an
elite quarterback. Like we get onto, there's some similarities there
to Eli Manning, who of course has won two Super Bowls,
where Eli has been good or better at times in

(07:23):
the playoffs than his reputation the regular season. Eli never
gets hurt, doesn't miss, doesn't miss the start, throws her
about the same number yards, throws for slightly more touchdowns.
Eli is a slightly better quarterback than Joe Flacco. But
there's we we almost paid too much attention to the
postseason with Flacco limited sample size, quality, coaching staff, and

(07:48):
the fact that playing with the Ravens he's always been
in the playoffs, so kind of like Jeter, he's been
able to accrue a lot, a lot more UH playoff games,
and the more playoff games, the more playoffs success that
you can have. And to be totally honest, in most
of those playoff games they have a dominant defense and

(08:10):
dominant running game, and so Joe Flacco doesn't have to
be great, doesn't have to carry a team. But the
elite of all elite can carry their football team, and
Flacco is just not that guy, and especially now within
this offense. So this is I give this advice to
guys all the time. I give it to Ryan Music,

(08:31):
who's been dating his girlfriend for over a year now, right, Music,
that's correct. Did you ever get the reinvite to the
second Hawaii Trippers that ship sailed? No, I have been
the formal invitation has been resubmitted, and I have accepted.
Good good, good man. And look, I'm not gonna put
you on the spot, not at least now. But you know,

(08:54):
once you've been with a girl six months to a
year and and somebody asked you like, are you in love?
Is she the one? And you're like, I don't know.
It's because you know what the answer is. You know
what the answer is. And the reason you don't want
to give the honest answer, which is if it's not yes,

(09:15):
absolutely is probably not because then you have to go
back at first, then you have to break your girl's
heart or she has to break your heart however it works,
and then you gotta start all over and go through
the process. And even that's not. Probably, like I'm better
off just staying here. Maybe I'll feel it sometimes too. Like, dude,

(09:35):
if you don't feel it six months or year in,
he ain't gonna feel it. Um kind of weird. Marcus
Smart couldn't hit shots when the Celtics were winning games.
Last night, he had everything he threw and the Celtics lose.
I'm gonna ask Brad Stevens about Marcus. About Marcus Smart
more than any I want to ask him, what was

(09:55):
the first thought that went through his head when he
realized he wouldn't have Gordon Hayward this season? That's up
coming next, But first, Brad Stevens head coach the Celtics
too into next. But first, love as an army and

Leave Show Fox Sports Radio. They of course famously won
sixteen games in a row. Get to my thoughts on
one of the coaches Tennessee is reportedly reaching out to

(11:45):
and how they could quite possibly solve that mess in
Knoxville if they make it happen. But what it kind
of all boils down to, We'll get to that upcoming,
but kind of fascinating what happened last night between the
Pistons who have Avery Bradley now part of a big
trade pulled off in the off season between the Celtics
and the Celtics and the Pistons and UH and the

(12:09):
Celtics where Marcus Smart, who has struggled with his shooting
all season long shot the ball really really well and
yet his team lost. The help dive in on on
the Celtics, of course, won sixteen games and roast surprising
everybody after drop in their first two games of the season,
is Brad Stevens, their head coach, kind of have have to
spend some time with us year Brad, how are you okay? Sorry,

(12:32):
we're working on Brad. We are we are proverbial, proverbically efforting,
We're efforting. Brad Stevens will join us in mere moments
here on the show. Um. It is one of those
kind of fascinating things where Billy Donovan talks about you know,
being a guy right of the time, you don't have

(12:53):
the basketball in in basketball, and what can you do
without the ball? Marcus Smarts the perfect embodiment of that.
They act he played better the worst he shoots. But
here the Celtics are at eighteen and four, even after
losing last night. Eighteen and four and uh and they've
played more road games than home games. And yeah, they're

(13:13):
doing all of this without Gordon Hayward. Um. Obviously, Lebron
kind of flexed his muscle. I'll get to what last
night's game reminding me of if you if you haven't
heard the news, Blake Griffin is out for an undetermined
amount of time with a sprained m c L. That's
when Austin Rivers fell on him. Blake was going after

(13:36):
loose ball. Austin also went after loose ball. It looked
a little bit like fake huscle, but kind of close enough.
And um, and so now Blake Griffin the though the
Clippers got the win, Clippers obviously struggling to an eight
and eleven start, Lakers are eight and twelve, and the Grizzlies,
who just fired David Fizdale, are seven and twelve. They too,

(13:57):
are mired with injuries. They've lost eight can secutive games.
So we'll dive in on the NBA with Brad Stevens,
uh as we're able to locate him in moments. I'll
say this about the reports that Mike Gundhi has spoken
with Tennessee. Do I think Mike Gundhy wants to take
the Tennessee job? I think you listen. You know, Gundy

(14:20):
just got a new contract with Clem State before the
season began, for like four and a half million dollars
um and uh I, there's there's two logical reasons why
he would listen to Tennessee. We'll get to that in
a moment. Let's let's welcome in the head coach of
the team with the best record, still the best record
in the NBA, even after last night's lost to the Pistons.
It's Brad Stevens of the Seas. He joins us now

(14:42):
on Fox Sports Radio. Brad, how are you hi, Doug?
How you doing good? Man? Um, let' let's start at
the beginning. Gordon Heyward goes down in the first quarter
of your first game, and like, look, there's there's far
more tragic events that um. You also don't prepare yourself
for but for as a coach. You have eleven new
players and a lot of the hype is surrounding not

(15:04):
just Kyrie but Gordon. Um, what did you drawn, like
what level of of preparation could you drawn in order
to kind of reconfigure your team as you were still
figuring out your team when you lost Gordon in the
first quarter of your first game. Well, I think there's
a couple of layers to that, right. The first one

(15:24):
is the emotional loss not only for you know, for
for him, but how you feel for him, UM, because
you know that he obviously you know, this was a
hard decision for him to come to Boston and to
choose to come here and choose to play with this team,
and for it to really be taken away in the

(15:45):
first six minutes of the season is really difficult. And
there's a lot of challenges that come every day with um,
you know, the with going through rehab versus going through
and having a scoreboard and competing in the games. And
but he's doing he's doing really well and all of that.
And and when we when we learned that um, he

(16:06):
was gonna be able to make a full recovery, and
he chose surgery, and the surgery went great, and he
started that process. I think it was um, you know,
an opportunity for us all to say, okay, now, how
do we maximize this. The hard part in the n
b A is the lack of practice time. We haven't
hardly had any practices since the start of the season

(16:27):
because we basically played every other day for the last
thirty six days. And and so what we've done is
we've tried to you know, um, you know, walk through
by walk through, meeting by meeting, UM talk about how
we can be a little bit better and play a
little bit better. And you know, we've had a lot
of guys step up and and and play um well

(16:51):
in his absence or others absences when we've had other
injuries thus far. Yea, your schedule is interesting because you know,
like the Lakers had like four days off of four
play last night, and your schedule continues with this, like
like you played last night, Now you do have a
couple of days before you play, yeah, and and then
after that it goes back to the either one day
off or you're you're playing on back to backs yet again,

(17:13):
Like it feels like maybe that's the curse of being
good and people want to see you on TV. Yeah,
and probably and and the other thing that's unique about
our schedule this year is we go to London. So
there's a big break in the middle of January when
you're traveling to and from London in the days off
and recovering and everything else. So you you have other,

(17:33):
you know, times of your schedule that are jammed up.
But that's okay. You can you can manage that appropriately. Um.
The bottom line is you just can't practice very often because, um,
you know, you're gonna need everything you've got to play
in the games, um, you know, from a physical and
mental perspective, And so I think the um, you know,
the one thing is after after we hit the new

(17:56):
year here, we'll have an even better feel for where
we are. We'll be halfway through our schedule, um, and
then we'll actually have some time um to be on
the practice court, uh, more consistent time to be on
the practice court with that London trip, um, you know,
prior to the last half of the season. All right, Well,
it's just one more on Gordon. Is it Is it

(18:19):
at all possible that he plays in the playoffs this year?
We've we've basically just talked to the staff about him
getting better and and be in full till for next year.
So I don't want to, you know, I don't. I
would never put that on him either way, but I
would say that that would be really, really unlikely. Brad Stevens,

(18:41):
head coach of the Celtics, joining us on the Doug
Otlib show, you win sixteen row and you said it
was a mirage because oftentimes you guys were falling behind
and getting away with not playing exactly the way you
want to play. But there is something to the culture
of winning, right. There is something to finding ways to
win games even though you aren't executing the way in

(19:01):
which the coaches intended to the way that probably gives
you the best the best ceiling in the playoffs. There
is something too finding ways to win those games. Now, Yeah,
I think so. I think so. The other part of
it is is that, you know, we played basically a
couple of full games without Kyrie after he had his
um facial fracture. We played a few games without al

(19:23):
in there. Um, you know, we've we played a game
this weekend without Jalen. We played some games without Marcus Smart,
so we've we've had other injuries that that haven't lasted
as long that we've had to have guys step up
and play well. And um, you know, guys have just
been willing to take on the next task. I think,
you know in both of our losses in the last week,
Miami and Detroit, um, you know we could have done

(19:46):
things better. But you know you also have to tip
your tip your cap to the teams you're playing against.
And Miami played terrific last Wednesday, and I thought Detroit
played as good of a game against us as anybody's
played all year. Brad Stephen, head coach of the Boston Celtics,
showing us on the Doug Gotlieve Show helped me out
with Marcus, Like I watch him and I see the
little things he does. But what's amazing is the splits.

(20:10):
Right when you guys lose, he shoots well. Right in losses,
he's shooting from three's average nearly fourteen a game. Like,
he's shooting the ball well. When you guys win, he
shoots terribly from three from the free throw line, Like,
how do you how do you explain that to the
layman fan, that that his his points and his shooting

(20:33):
doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, even
because the stats be a lot, you should be a
better team if he shoots the ball better. Yeah, I'm
not sure that I can explain those, um that a way.
I guess the only way I'd explain it is we're
in a small sample size, right. But I think I
think the biggest thing, and you said it earlier, he

(20:53):
does so many little things that affects winning. And Marcus
knows this that, Um, I'm sure that you know. Whether
it's it's high school coaches, college coach, parents, um, whatever
the case may be. They may believe equal to me,
but nobody believes in him more than I do. Like
I think that he's just a winner. He just impacts winning.

(21:16):
He he cares about team's success. Um. He has a
way about him that I really really appreciate. And I
always believe the next the next play is going to
go right for him, and when the game is really
on the line, I believe it even more when we
saw that last year, um in the playoffs. We saw

(21:36):
it two years ago in the playoffs when we had
some injuries and he had to guard millsap Um for
a half against Atlanta, Like he just has a special
knack about him. He makes winning plays, and you know
a lot of them go unnoticed or certainly don't appear
on a statu sheet. But I really don't get too
caught up in whether he's making shots or not. It's
more about, you know, are we as a team finding

(21:58):
the right shots for us us and we all believe
that he will step up and make him um and uh,
and he deserves to make him with the time he
puts in Brad Stevens joining us in the Doug Gottleives Show. Um.
I noticed those first couple of games of the year
that Kyrie wasn't necessarily letting your offense work for him,

(22:19):
that he was still kind of isolating the guard. And
one of the amazing things that you guys are able
to do is create at the end of shot clock, uh,
the opportunity to hit for him or whoever to be
guarded by, usually the biggest guy on the floor, Like
find the center, that's your best, that's your best opportunity
for a mismatch. And it felt like he was like
his default. You know, we all have revert to our default.

(22:40):
His default was just take it and make a play clear,
everybody out and if help comes, then kick out for
the open pass. What has the process been like of
getting him integrated into what you want to do to
not get a good shot, but get the better shot. Um,
I don't think that's you know, first of all, he's
been great to be around. He's been easy to coach, um.

(23:04):
And you know, I think that that us as a
team we need to We've needed to improve our offense
and and thankfully our offense has steadily improved over the
last month. But he's been terrific the whole time. And
I don't think I think when you have a a
player of his caliber and um, you know, I've been

(23:25):
really fortunate. You know, when you think about getting a
chance to coach Isaiah the last few years and now
Kyrie has some of the some of the best point
guards in the NBA, you kind of pinch yourself that
that you get a chance to do this. But um,
I think it's more about us, um figuring how to
help him rather than him trying to, you know, come

(23:47):
to us. I think we need to do a better
job of making sure that we all understand how he
best can have success. And and you know, you said it.
A lot of teams switch onto Al, especially late, so
you do end up with his matchups. But you know
he's a special offensive player. And and when you're in coaching,
I think one of your the biggest keys is to

(24:08):
try to learn the guys on your team as quickly
as you can. It does take time, and I think
we're still all learning each other a little bit. But um,
you know it's our job to help put him in
position to help him have his best success because he
can do so many great things. Well, tell me something
you've learned about Kyrie that you frankly did not know.
Don't have to be on the court, but something you

(24:29):
learned about him that you didn't know for coaching him.
You know, I I think I knew this, and certainly
you know when you're watching and playing against him. I
mean we've coached against him in the playoffs to the
last three years, and he's just a really, really hard
guy to stop. I didn't realize how good of a
cutter he was, um any any and he has you know,

(24:51):
he showed that at times certainly, But he has one
of the quickest um setups and backcuts that I've seen,
And um, he's got a really special ability to get
open um. And then for him to be able to stop,
play under control and make shots at the level that
he does is he's a remarkable player, that's for sure. No, No,

(25:13):
and and and and the other part is like on
those cuts, as quick as they are, he catches everything
right like he doesn't he And I think that's it's
like an underrated part when we don't talk about guards
and their hands, right. We always talk about big guys
in their hands. But when he cuts, or when he drives,
or how he picks up the basketball in those incredible
finishing shots, he doesn't seem to bobble the ball ever,

(25:35):
Like I'm sure he does that you see him every day.
He does, but it sure seems like he bobbles it
a whole lot less than everybody else, There's no doubt
about it. And then the finishes are, you know, as
unique as any guard that I've ever seen. His ability
to to finish with touch with either hand, a variety
of ways, um all around the rim. It's just, you know, again,

(25:57):
it's it's pretty unique. Danny talks about timeline. When you guys,
when you guys signed Gordon, when you guys traded for Cayrie.
You was talking about timeline, and I think what we
all read into that was like, look, this is a
long term build plan, but Tatum appears to be further
along than most of us thought. Jalen Brown appears to
have improved and been further along than most of us thought.

(26:18):
And your team for having eleven new pieces and losing
Gordon Hayward seems to be better. Long Again, I know
this is more results oriented than the process that you
watch every day. So I guess my question is what
what are what are your reasonable expectations about your club
when we get to the end of the season. Yeah,
I mean, I think here's the Here's the reality is

(26:40):
is that Danny Um. Danny has been unbelievable to work
for UM, as has our ownership group. And and I
think though that that they really have to be in
the always in the in focus of the long view
and seeing where we UM go from here? How do

(27:01):
we make ourselves the best that we can be? UM?
Where are we with regard to the cap five years
from now? Blah blah blah blah blah. And I'm more
focused on just today, so I haven't even thought about
all that stuff. You know it's more about okay or
the events, but Brad, you know how it is. We
watch you, Gordon goes down, You're like, well, they can't win,

(27:21):
they can't win, like everybody cancelor can't win, can't compete
at the highest level. And then all the sudden you
start beating people like, wait, maybe maybe they are further along.
I mean, the Calves added a bunch of different pieces
and who knows like that that never came into your
mind as to wait, maybe we can compete at the
top level of this league this year. All I think
about the next game, Doug, And I know that sounds crazy,

(27:43):
and I know it sounds just like a coach is um.
But I've gone into every game my whole career with
the emphasis of, Okay, how do we prepare ourselves the
best to give ourselves the best chance of winning this game?
And I think that you've you've you've played, you've coached,
you've been around it your whole life. You go into
every game thinking that you can win the next possession,

(28:04):
and then if you add all those up, you can
win the game. And but I also think that's how
you got to go about it when it's all on
the line, you know, in April, May and June and
and you know, I think we've made strides over the
last couple of years, obviously, but we're a brand new
team and we'll see, we'll see what what we look
like when it's all said and done. You know, this

(28:25):
is no no NBA team has ever been judged based
on what they've done through twenty two games. So we
got we've got a long way to go to find
out if we're if we're good or not. Yeah, I
I listened to the Champion the the November Championship Trophy,
isn't the mail. I know that's a big one, right
they They put that alongside the seventeen other actual NBA

(28:46):
titles in Boston Garden. But you did, you did win it.
In the meantime, can't wait to catch up in person.
Appreciate you stopping by and joining us on Fox Sports Radio.
All right, take care, pleasures mind Brad Stephen joining us
on The Doug Gottlieb Show, Major News and New York City.
Guess who's not starting at quarterback for the g Men.
Find out now as we bring in Dan Bayer, Dan

(29:06):
what he got for me? Well, Doug, it is breaking
news in the National Football League. The Giants announced that
Eli Manning will not start Week thirteen against the Raiders. Instead,
it's Gino Smith who will be the team starting quarterback,
ending Manning's consecutive start streak at two hundred and ten games.
It should be noted that Manning was given the option
to start Week thirteen against the Raiders, but was told

(29:29):
by head coach Ben McAdoo that he would not finish
the game that the team did want to see rookie
quarterback Davis Webb and also Gino Smith. In action, Manning said, Hey,
if you're going to give the guys an opportunity to play,
you might als will give him the practice reps as well.
So Eli Manning is going to the bench for Week thirteen,
ending a streak of two hundred and ten consecutive starts.
As the measure. The Giants have the Raiders coming up

(29:51):
on Sunday. On Thursday, the Redskins will face the Dallas
Cowboys and Redskins tenant Jordan Reid didn't practice again today
because of a kneat injury. The Niners have the Bears
on Wednesday. Excuse me on Sunday. It's on Wednesday. That
the team is expected to announce their starting quarterback for
the game, either a bang up c. J. Bethard or
Jimmy Garoppolo. Speaking of injuries, Clippers forward Blake Griffin could

(30:13):
miss two months of action with the knee injury Griffin
spring as MC album last night's game against the Lakers.
It's ESPN to put out the two month timetable. Kevin
Durant and Stephen Curry practice today for the Warriors, but
both are questionable for Tomorrow's game against the Lakers. The
Yankee schedule to interview Carlos Beltron for their managerial vacancy.
He just won a World Series with the Astros then retired.

(30:34):
He comes the sixth person to interview for that job.
But again the Big News Giants benching Eli Manning almost
at his request, Doug and instead going with Gino Smith
to start Sunday against the Raiders. Okay, can I I mean,
can we dial back? Dan? You were there? Ryan, you
were there as well, Um, and get well suon John Ramos,
who's battling a cold. I always love when we're fighting

(30:57):
a cold. No one actually fights anything anyway, Um, but
didn't like we were five games in the season, and
they had lost Adell Beckham Jr. And I said, hey,
they should trade him to the Jaguars because the Jaguars
need a quarterback. The Jaguars are basically run uh but
not basically. They are run by his former coach, Tom Coughlin.

(31:17):
And you know at the end of the year they're
going to be considering a quarterback change anyway and trying
to get younger and see what they got, Like, why
not start that that proster? I did say that was
sometimes you think things and you didn't. You didn't say
and like, now you didn't say that, Doug. I did
say that right then, Yes, you did, absolutely, And by
the way, you got some flak for it. And then

(31:38):
a few weeks later other people were saying, why don't
the Jaguars trade for Eli Manning? Yeah? I think it was.
Was it D'Angelo Williams who joined us, who said, that's crazy,
that will never happen music. You you recall you write
the show notes, don't you. Yeah, it was D'Angelo Williams
because his point was that it's not so much that
Eli is done and he can't play anymore, but behind

(32:00):
their poor offensive line, which has gotten moderately better, but
it was so bad at the beginning of the year,
he said, he that's whenna be the comment about like
put that dog down, like if you know one could
play behind their offensive line given their weapons, and it
wasn't just on you. I don't I don't dispute that.
I think the same thing in San Francisco with Jimmy Garoppolo.
But at least the Niners understand, like, hey, dude, we're

(32:22):
playing for next year in the year after that, right,
I mean, that's this is kind of sports in two
thousand and seventeen, Like and you have a I mean, look,
you don't just trade him to trade him, and normally
you wouldn't want to send him to Jacksonville, but Jacksonville
has got a good team and their quarterback away and
oh yeah, by the way, Jacksonville's run by his former

(32:42):
head coach, Like all of that made total sense to
be And now they're stuck with Eli Manning, who I'm
sure is pissed right, like it sounds like the gentleman
thing to do, like are you gonna pull me on anyway?
Why don't you let those guys start, Like you think
that start streak doesn't mean something to him? Of course
it does. Of course it does. I would think much

(33:02):
less of Eli Manning if it doesn't. Now he may
he'll never say publicly that it matters to him, but
it absolutely means something. Dough So he's got the second
longest start streak in the history of the National Football League,
and he's like, yeah, you know you're gonna place replace
me anyway, Why don't you just pull me his quote.
Dug in a statement said, my feeling is that if

(33:24):
you're going to play the other guys, play them starting
just to keep the streak going and knowing you won't
finish the game and have a chance to win, to
have a chance to win, it is pointless to me,
and it tarnishes the streak. Um, you know, I I
miss fascinating, fascinating to watch the Giants, right, and I

(33:45):
don't like Look, I don't blame the Geno Smith thing
is like, you want to talk about a guy just
getting a shot because he's a veteran like that, I
mean you're not even then you're not really going to
get a sense of Davis Webb, Like I get it. Gino.
Gino has been in New York. Genos started games. Geno
is drafted by the Jets. You brought him as a

(34:05):
free agent. I'm sure he's done all of the right things,
But like when the point to figure out if Davis
Webb can play? All right, So prepare Davis Webb like
he's the starter, and let's see how he plays with
those scripted players to start the game. Fascinating, fascinating. Um,

(34:28):
here's one side note. Did anybody realize Geno Smith I
believe is the first black quarterback to ever start for
the Giants. That's it seems like an impossibility that I
believe that the last team the last team, And remember
the Jaguars and Carolina Panthers came into existence in the nineties.
But the Jags have had a couple of different black quarterbacks,

(34:50):
and of course, um, the Carolina Panthers have Cam Newton.
But think about that, the New York Giants starting Gino Smith,
that will make them the last team to cross over
that in visible threshold starting an African American quarterback. Anyway,
m hmm, what are the chances that the that Gino
Smith will start for the Giants next season? I'll tell

(35:15):
you next. This is the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox
Sports Radio. What True Car. You can find out what
other people in your area paid for the same car
you're looking for, new or used. Visit True Car to
enjoy more confident car buying experience. Doug Gotlive show, Fox

(35:36):
Sports Radio. That's a wow, Eli Manning not getting the
start for the Giants. All right, let's so whip that
together and with the other stories to day, bringing our
great friend Dan Fire, who's back off after having a
day off a little bit, fighting off a little bit
of farm, and let's play a game. Doug probable today

(35:57):
for work? That's what I am probable? But was it?
Was it a was it a coal? Was the flu?
Was it coming out? Both ends? To not get into details,
I just didn't know if I could sit in this
chair for thirty minutes straight without having to leave. So
but but we're a little bit better today, a little
bit better today. Okay, body knows that, no question. Suddenly,

(36:19):
what game do we want to play today? What are
the chance? What are the chances? Okay, if I'm probable,
that's probably about start, Doug. What are the chances? The
Giants are starting quarterback Geno Smith? Who are starting quarterback
Geno Smith? In Week thirteen, will actually get the starting
job into five at best. UM, Look Gino Smith getting

(36:42):
the start when everybody and their brother just wants to
see what the kid Davis Webb can do. That's like
on senior night when they always started the senior what
are you doing? What are we doing here? Trotting to
dude out on senior night? That never works out well? Right,
the guy sitting there looking one eye over the shoulder
when you're gonna pull me out of the game takes.
And it also means that like Gino Smith, knowing that

(37:03):
they're coming in to replace him, is going to try
and throw every trying to throw every dime he possibly can.
Like that is just such a I get it. Gino
has been a league, Gina has probably been a pro.
But if he's really a pro and you like how
he's been as a backup, that's good, sign him to
another year deal as a backup. But we want to
see Davis Webb and the only way to really see

(37:23):
Davids Webb is make him the starter and let's see
what he's got. Well, let's then do it. There. What
are the chances Davis's Webb is the giant starting quarterback
in UM? Not great but like, look, he's gonna get
a couple of opportunities here at the end of the season.
I'm gonna go with a twenty percent chance chance he's
a starting quarterback. Look, remember Eli Manning is still under contract.

(37:46):
Eli Manning, if they can fix the rest of the team,
could still have a long future with with the Giants.
Um they they want David's Webb to show him that
you can save money and and invest on him and
you know, use the rest of the money trade Eli
Manning maybe to Jacksonville sor to Denver um and UH

(38:08):
and and build the rest of the team. Or they
could draft another quarterback with the high draft picks. So
I would say it's like a chance. First, there was
the response to Dennis Dodd's report about waiting on Tennessee,
which he refuted. Then there was a tweet about Nick
Saban contradicting himself when it came to the college football playoff. So, Doug,
what are the chances that Lane Kiffin's Twitter trolling is

(38:29):
going to cost him opportunities at high profile jobs? H
Will that be a factor if they're considering bringing in
Lane Kiffin? Yeah, I mean I can't believe. I cannot
believe he trolled Nick Saban on Twitter like like work
went into it, like I cannot believe that he did that. Um,

(38:50):
I would guess that Lane Kiffin's got to be so
ridiculously successful to get to get a head coach at
or just be at a place to which that sort
of thing is not frowned upon. Um. But I don't
think he's getting Arkansas. That would be where you like
one plague. It's got to be somebody who wants to
tweak Alabama. I just don't think he's getting a big job.

(39:12):
So what are the chances that he gets a big
job that this, yeah, that this could cost him, Like,
is this gonna be something that's gonna come up and say,
we don't want to be able to actually thinking. I
think everybody knows he's seen as immature. I'm sure he
can spin it as just bringing attention to his team
and to what he does. And with every person that's

(39:32):
turned off by it, all it takes is one a
d to be turned on by it. Really does I'd
say fifteent chance it it hurts his chances to get
another job, bigger job. We know that Tiger Woods dominated
Gulf for about fifteen almost twenty years, but now he
makes his return at the Herol World Challenge, and that
this dug for the younger players in a ideal world. Um,

(39:58):
I would like to have them feel with some of
them might my past guys I had to go against
all those years. I'd like to him to feel that
same play. So, Doug, what are the chances that Tiger
Woods can dominate this younger generation in golf? As he
teased it up starting Thursday. I'm not sure you guys
are aware, but I am still a stockholder in Tiger Woods.
I still believe he can come back and play at

(40:20):
an elite competitive level. But do I think he can?
Was the question? Can he dominate the way he used
to dominate? I remember it was. It was like, what
four years ago he was the best player on tour.
He just didn't win a major. Yeah, I'm gonna say
it's uh ten percent shot. Ten percent shot he can
at best and a nine percent shot and in golf,

(40:43):
that's still pretty good. Final one, Clippers likely have lost
Blake Griffin for two months or what are the chances
that they can actually continue to win? There on a
three game win streak now without Blake in the lineup.
I mean they beat the Lakers and they beat the Kings.
I don't remember who their other win was. I mean
it can can they play the Lakers? Yeah? So yeah,

(41:04):
congrats on winning games against the worst teams in the league.
Um yeah, I'm gonna go, And that's game time. This
is game time on the Duck gott Leap Show, like milk, Right,
that's really coming to two percent? Like milk, we had

(41:25):
lots of things going on in the world of sports.
Give I'll give my take on Gundy to Tennessee why
it actually makes sense. But um, next, will Eli Manning
finish his career in New York? I'll tell you on
the Dug out Limp Show. Breaking news of the NFL,
The New York Giants are two and nine, and they
are also making a change at quarterback. The Giants announced
that they will start Geno Smith in week thirteen against

(41:47):
the Oakland Raiders, moving Eli Manning to the bench and
ending as consecutive start streak at two and ten games.
Another Giants did offer Manning the opportunity to start the game,
but only to give way to either Davis Webb, the rookie,
or Gino Smith. At some point during the game, Eli
declined that offer the Giants going with Gino Smith is
their starter. On Sunday in the NBA, Clippers forward Blake

(42:10):
Griffin is gonna be out and reported two months of
action because of a spring mcl suffered. Did last night's
win against the Los Angeles Lakers well. Kevin Durant and
Steph Curry practiced today and are questionable for Tomorrow's game
for the Warriors against the Lakers. Yankees are scheduled to
interview Carlos Beltron for their manager real vacancy. I'm Dan Buyer,

(42:33):
What up, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio? Man, do
we have a lot of stuff? Darren McFadden just announced
his retirement. And I know you're like, didn't that already happened?
Stop it? Stop it. Cowboys released in this week and
Darren McFadden retires. It's just um part of that incredible
backfield at Arkansas and which they had Darren McFadden and

(42:59):
they had Peyton Hillis was the third back and uh,
what's his name? Buyer? What was the other Felix? What
was the Felix Jones? Right? That was the other running back?
Like they had all three they had they had all
three in their backfield. That was that's pretty good. It's
pretty good. I believe Casey Dick was their quarterback and

(43:23):
Houston nut I just love the fact that Dick and
Nutt Houston used to work together so well for the
Hawks they did. Sorry, I'm a child. I apologize to
no one. Stud gotlip show here on Fox Sports Radio.
But that pales in comparison to the news out of
New York City, which makes total sense and no sense

(43:43):
at all. The Giants are not gonna start Eli Manning, Okay,
I gotta take a look at somebody else, right, got
to see him against live bullets and oh yeah, by
the way, this is tanking without calling it tanking, right,
I don't here how good, Davis Webb is. You have
a better chance of winning with Eli Manning as your

(44:06):
quarterback because he's Eli Manning for a reason. But if
your Giants, you're at two and nine and you're competing
with the Niners who are threatening to play Jimmy Garoppolo,
the Bears who are three and eight, the Browns who
are oh and eleven and quickly working towards o and sixteen,
Like you gotta protect your draft position and I love this.

(44:27):
I'd like, we're not trying to lose, We're trying to
play young. How does young usually work out? Not so much.
But they want to take a look at David's webb.
That makes sense. What doesn't make sense is the fact
that they're first going to take a look at Geno Smith.
So what does it say about about Ben mcadoo's job status.

(44:52):
I mean, this is not a decision that Ben McAdoo
plays into. They've either told him, he already knows he's gone,
And the question is you know easy way or hard way?
Hey man, you want to do this easy way of
the hard way or kind of like Todd Bowles. They
know they're down, but he's their guy and they're gonna
give him another year. But you gotta work with him

(45:13):
here in his last couple of games the year. Let
them work through the roster and see what they like
and what they don't like. And how are you ever
going to tell if you need a quarterback if you
don't play all of the quarterbacks on your roster. So
I have no idea of McAdoo. My guess is that
you think McAdoo is gone, except you have to know

(45:33):
the Giants organization. They are really really slow to pull
the trigger. I mean, if you remember, Tom Coughlin should
have been fired two or three years before he actually
was fired. First they had Steve Spagnola who came back
as a defensive coordinator. He was bad. They had Perry Fuel,
he was bad. They changed offensive coordinators as well. That's

(45:56):
when they brought in also, that's when they brought in McAdoo.
Was change changed offensive coordinators, and then the thought was, hey,
the offense is fixed. We've been able to fix and
get more life out of Eli Manning, let's fix the defense.
They did that going back to two off seasons ago.
But then the offensive line broke down. Odell Beckham Jr.

(46:16):
Was never healthy. They haven't established a running game, and frankly,
they just aren't good enough pieces on offense to even
make it formidable at all. And um, I think that
that Eli falling on his sword saying, look, you're gonna
pull me anyway? Why even start me? Is it is
an admirable point. It makes the starting Gina Smith even

(46:39):
more peculiar. I like it. I liken it again. Um,
I like him again. To senior night, right, senior night
in high school basketball, you know these guys like, put
Jimmy in, Put Jimmy in, put Jimmy in. Finally, the
coaches like, you know, we're gonna start Jimmy on senior nights.

(47:00):
Those idiot, idiot friends of his will stop chanting. But um,
what we all thought would happen to Tom Brady appears
to be close to happening with Eli Manning. Remember tom
Brady's dad thought he'd finished somewhere else. There's always thoughts
that he'd finished Babe for the San Francisco forty Niners

(47:20):
because he grew up a Niners fan. Not Troy Aikman
finished with but he finished early because of concussion. Brett
Farve didn't, but Farv went to the uh Jets first,
then to the Vikings for a couple of years. Tony
Romo chose to go to broadcasting, but that was only
because the number one chair at CBS came available. Otherwise

(47:44):
he'd be in Houston, he'd be in Denver and those
you know between. Kansas City appears to have its air parents,
so too does so too does Houston. But if you
can get Eli for a year in Denver, where his
brother has been successful, doesn't that make a lot of sense.
Jacksonville makes a lot of sense. The same trade that

(48:08):
was viable a month and a half ago before the
trade deadline, It's probably gonna be viable um once we
get to the off season. So the big news of
the day is Eli Manning's start streak will end this
Sunday as the Giants are gonna start, gonna start Geno
Smith and then work their way towards Davis Webb. This

(48:29):
is a Giant team that has just two wins on
the season. They're taken on the Raiders on the road
before returning home to the Dallas Cowboys. Now, as for
Mike Gundy, who has reportedly been offered the Tennessee head
coaching vacancy, look, there's only two ways in which Tennessee

(48:50):
can find a new head coach. Either one get somebody
who is below the normal level not necessarily of acumen,
but of a quality of resume in order to take
the job, or to massively massively overpay somebody who's not

(49:11):
really on the market. You can buy your way out
of a problem. And so if you're Mike Gundy, who
played at Oaklahoma State, coaches at Oklahoma State has been
there thirteen years, he finally got the rays that he wanted.
Took him a couple of years to do so, got
about four and a half million dollars, got his staff
raises as well. He's got all the facilities he could

(49:33):
possibly get. At Oklahoma State, they are not getting. The
stadium is bran, brand new. The training table is brand new,
the locker room is brand new, the weight room is
brand new. Everything is brand new. And look, I love
my school. But with a senior three and a half
year starter at quarterback, with arguably the best wide receiver

(49:54):
in college football, with a running back who actually has
more yards than say Kwan Barkley, and a schedule, I mean,
did anybody look at Oaklaoma State schedule? I sure as
heck did, because I was trying to figure out which
of these incredible home games I was gonna go to.

(50:19):
The toughest team they played in the non conference was
Pittsburgh on the road. Right, they played Tulsa this year.
Tulsa's a two win te and they played Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh.
I know they won this past weekend, but they stick
South Alabama. They played who fired their coach. That's the
three non conference games they played, TCU and Oklahoma both

(50:40):
at home, Kansas State also at home. Those are the
three toughest games on their schedule. And while they did
go to Texas and survive thirteen, Texas is not back
just yet. And Baylor has been blown apart by the
coaching change, Like you're not going to get a better
shot at getting to a college football playoff. Not only
is Oakland Stay not getting the playoff, they didn't even

(51:01):
get to the Big twelfth championship game. They finished all
alone in third place, which look, I'm I'm reasonable enough
to to to know that's outstanding considering where he started
and the level of expectations that have been raised and
like six consecutive sellouts, it's awesome stuff. But now we're

(51:21):
starting to get to that's as good as it gets.
Whereas you can go to Tennessee, take a shot at
the big stage, take a shot at the SEC. The
SEC East is still an easier path as Florida's not
yet got it going. Georgia does but hasn't totally figured out.
He got Missouri, got Kentucky, got Vanda, but like, you
got some wins that you could get and oh yeah,
by the way, you only go if you say show

(51:44):
me the money. Like, if you make four and a
half million dollars and somebody says, hey, we're gonna give
you a seven year, fifty million dollar deal, fifty million
dollars a go, you just go. And if they fire you,

(52:09):
you could either always go back. You can go back
to TV, or you could do this one, two, three
four and just count your money. Like, look, I'm not
for coaches leaving their jobs. Okay, I'm not for uh
four coaches leaving their jobs. But if somebody's gonna pay

(52:34):
you one and a half to two times as much
at that, like, look one and a half times. But
if you're making forty grand a year as a high
school coach and somebody's gonna pay you fifty grand a year,
and you're going to arrival high school or school you
don't have, and you're coaching at your alma mater and
you're teaching there and you've been there, like that's not
that big deal. And look to me, four and a
half million dollars and still at Oklahoma, Like that's a

(52:56):
lot of that's a lot of cheese fries. But I mean,
this is the greatest country ever. If you can make
seven eight million dollars of coach football on Saturdays, I
mean thirteen Saturdays, and you make fifty million dollars. Go
make that money. Go make that money. Eight seven seven

(53:17):
ninety nine on Fox is the phone number. Coming up next,
Dwayne Brown, who was traded mid season by the Texans
to the Seahawks, will join the show. I gotta ask
him about holding out in Houston, getting out of Houston,
and now being the being the guy who's got to
solidify that leaky Seattle Seahawks offensive line, being brought in

(53:38):
the Pro Bowl of being brought in to fix stuff.
Dwayne Brown joins our show upcoming next, But first it's
Doug gollip here, and here are some helpful card tips

seriously and almost personally didn't right if you watched last night,
they took down the Philadelphia seventies sixers, So uh, I

(55:07):
thought it was pretty fascinating to watch that. It's it's
like a it's in an effort too. I don't think
a disrespected Ben Simmons and the Sixers. I think it's
actually an active respect. Everybody's talking about the Sixers, all right,
let's put them in their place, and they did. Maybe
the least discussed part of the resurgence of the Cleveland
Cavaliers is that um Derrick Rose, remember, is spending some

(55:31):
time away from the team, and it doesn't seem it
doesn't seem to even bother them, all right, I getting
that crazy, doesn't seem to even bother them. I mean, look,
that points to the you've got to have everybody pulling
in the one one direction, right, And the other part

(55:57):
is that it shows how the Rose probably wasn't even
much a part of this thing anyway. But I mean,
think about that. We discussed that I was last music.
Was that last Friday that that news came out trying
to think I think that was, yeah, you were you
were off. I was doing crawling show and last Friday
Adrian Warganowski said, um that that Derrick Rose is going

(56:23):
to spend time away because he got to figure out
what he wants to do in the game. I mean
the big thing is he has a huge contract with Adidas,
But does he forfeit that that contract if he walks
away from the only two million dollar contract with the
Cavaliers to retire. So mm hmm, but I mean think

(56:45):
think about that that one. Lebron's taking it seriously. He's
starting to ball out. He's kind of always played. It's
more than his teammates that are starting to step up
and play. And like the ultimate form of respect is
Lebron is playing hard tonight at both ends and is
getting his team to play hard tonight. So that's what

(57:09):
happened last night as well as the Blake Griffin heard
his knee as Austin Rivers fell into it when Blake
was getting on the floor for basketball and we already
had Brad Stevens on. If you missed the Brad Stevens interview,
go to the Doug Gotlip Show podcast. You can download
it for free, as well as our Clay Travis interview. Buyer,

(57:30):
I didn't ask you. You've been doing this a long time.
You go to your own you get your own show
on the weekends. Here leads everyone into a Fox NFL
Sunday what's your thoughts on how everything went down to
oust Greg Shiana before he ever really got the job.
You know, I listened to what the exchange that you
and Clay had yesterday, even though that I was out,

(57:51):
and I thought that it was a a really good
um exchange. I don't like the fact that I think
that this is going to mark Kim for the rest
of his time if if proof with no proof, right, yeah,
And you know this is the reason why Tennessee, you know,
hires their a d It's for them to make the decision.

(58:13):
And and I know, like you have to appease the
fan base, but they make the decisions, and if you
don't like their decisions, do something about them. They made
that decision. So I think I think I started more
towards in what you were saying, and I think it's
a very difficult spot for Greg Ciano. And now there's
even some horse saying, well, what does Ohio State do
about this? He's been there, you know, I mean, he's

(58:34):
been there and they trust him and they feel like
they vetted him. But you know, at what point are
you guilty of bad public perception? That is it's a
it's going to be fasting to see what happens also
gonna be interesting to see, Like who else in the NFC,
I think we all operate on the assumption that the
Rams are going to win the West, but they're only
They're only a game up on the Seahawks. Remember they

(58:56):
lost at home Cooper Cup dropped the ball in the
end zone. We all the Rams beat the Saints. The
Saints and the Panthers or a top their division. You
have the Eagles, you got the Vikings, and the team
that the other two teams competing for as of today,
that last playoff spot, the Seahawks and the Falcons. And
I think everyone knew, outside of the devastating injuries to

(59:18):
Richard Sherman and to Cam Chancellor, everyone knew that the
seahawks biggest issue was their offensive line, and to solidify
that offensive line, they made a midseason trade for Pro
bowl or Dwyanne Brown with the Houston Texans. Who joins
us now on the Doug Gotlip Show here on Fox
Sports Radio. Dwayne, congrats on the win this past weekend.
How are you? I'm good? How guy doing good? Man? Okay,

(59:39):
so let's let's go back to when you're in Houston.
H take me through your decision to hold out, because
I think before you came back to the team, UM,
early on their offensive line, the Texans offensive line was
a disaster and everybody's like Dwyanne Brown's rolling in the money.
And then Deshaun Watson comes in and they change the offense,

(01:00:00):
and you weren't as as readily discussed. What take me
back through that decision to sit out to get a
new contract and what it was like watching your team play. Um,
you know what happened in Houston. I mean, you know,
we just couldn't get on the same page. UM. You know,
as as you know, as a competitor, as a guy
that loves the game, you know, it was it was

(01:00:21):
tough to be away from from the sport, from our craft,
from my teammates. UM, but it was a business decision,
you know, And I think, UM, at the end of
the day, we we we mutually decided it was best
that you know, not be there. And I think, uh,
you know, no hard feelings I think on on either side.
And you know, I worked out I want to get

(01:00:42):
to Seattle obviously, and I want to get to what
you're doing charity wise this week, But but I can't
help but ask you. Obviously you took a you took
affordable stance against what Bob Bob mcdair was leaked to
have said in a private meeting. How much of them
trading you was that? How much of it was based
upon on uh, the fact you couldn't you couldn't come

(01:01:02):
to terms with the new salary. I'm not sure. I'm
not sure how much you know that I had to
do with it. Um. Obviously you know what was said.
There was something I didn't agree with, and um, you
know I was vocal about it. Uh you know, so Uh,
I'm not sure how much I had to do with it.
You know, I can only tell you how I felt
on my end, and um, you know I was. I was.

(01:01:26):
I stand by what I said and how I felt
about it. So, Um, like I said, but there's still
no hard feelings there. You know, I got nothing but
left everyone in Houston. I had a great nine years there.
I had a lot of success there individually and as
a team. So um, I'm happy at the time I
spent there. Okay, so you arrive in Seattle, what was
your perception of the Seahawks? Having having never played like

(01:01:46):
you guys played against the Seahawks earlier this year. What
was your what was your perception of the Seahawks as
an outsider. I always had a huge amount of respect
for the organization. You know, obviously they've had a lot
of success. I've been a we were Bowls once were Bowls,
a lot of division titles, you know, and and just
the culture in the locker room here. I've always had

(01:02:07):
a lot of respect for the guys and and the
way that they go about their business and how they
treat each other, you know. So being able to play
against them the Sunday before I got here, you know,
you just you know, obviously a hard fark game, very
close game. Um, you know, a lot of excitement, you know,
and to be here just a couple of days later.
Everyone had a lot of respect, you know for me

(01:02:27):
and everything I've done in my career. And then the
fielding was mutual, so it was it was very easy transition,
and the guys embraced me immediately. Yeah, they embraced you,
and you were in a position where everyone needs you.
On the other hand, like, look, now of a a sudden,
there's some shuffling with the offensive line, Like how do
you handle that? How do you you've only been in
one place. You go to a new locker room with
a new line, and everybody, I think in football knew

(01:02:48):
that they had had some issues with that line. Um
what did you do to ingratiate yourself with this new
with the with the new offensive line group that did
need you, But you're still taking somebody's job moving guy around. Um.
I think the guys in the office, the line, you know,
it's a very very young group. So uh, you know,
they obviously, you know, watched me throughout the years and

(01:03:11):
and all. Like I said, I had a lot of
respect for for what I've done, and you know the
way I go about my business. Um, you know, I
came in very humbly, humbling, humbling, um, and you know,
I just went about trying to get getting on him.
You know, I was I was very familiar with the system.
You know, I spent a lot of time with it
when I was a coach Kobayak, So that was a
pretty easy transition there and just getting some recall and

(01:03:34):
learn the terminology. And you know, once they saw, you know,
how I worked and how I went about my business,
you know, it was it was pretty easy, you know.
And but as a as as I was a line
to talk about chemistry and talk about continuity. So we're
still learning to to build that, you know. And and
Blue Joco came back last week and this is my
first time playing with him next to each other, so

(01:03:54):
you know, it's still a work in progress, but we're
doing pretty good. Yeah. And and like, look, you guys
are kind of throwing into the fire now. Now you've
got a couple of weeks, but you get Luke back,
and you get the Philadelphi Egos, who many regard as,
if not the best front seven in the conversation of
best front seven. Isn't this a great kind of litmus
test for exactly where you guys are as a group. Absolutely? Um,
you know, you want to compete against the best, and

(01:04:16):
Philly is playing the best football, best football in the
league right now. So um, as a unit, we were
all looking forward toward the talent, you know, and we
got him at home, you know, so um that that
will help us out something. You know, I think we've
got a good plan for them going into it. Um,
But it's just a huge test. We're gonna have to
get some good work in this week. And you know
they're they're the best team right now, you know. So

(01:04:37):
it's why not Why wouldn't you want to play against
a group like that? Um? You um, you know really
you know all too well about diabetes and and what
it can do to your family, your your mom and
your grandma, right, both type two. Yeah, and and this
has caused you, I mean you are up. I mean
you play a major role as an ambassador for the

(01:04:58):
American Diabetes Associate creation. Um. Yeah, and looks some of
it is hereditary, some of it is diet base. What
what should we know about diabetes that we don't that
that most I think most common Americans don't know. I
think it's uh, like you said, some of it, A
lot of it is diet based, you know. And and um,

(01:05:19):
I think in our culture, especially in the African American community,
a lot of the foods that we eat that we've
come to know and love, you know, the quote unquote
comfort foods and things like that. Um, it carry a
lot of things that can you know, destroy your body,
you know, over time. And I think, uh, for me
just watching how it's reads havoc you know, in my
family and then the in the country overall, I think

(01:05:42):
I just wanted to bring some more awareness to it. Um.
You know, I became an ambassador with the American BT
Association and we created the Team Tackle Initiative a couple
of years ago, where we went to congress, you know,
and and propose different ideas to them on how to
bring more awareness and and try to find a cure
for it. UM. So I think just being conscious of it,

(01:06:03):
you know, I think people going to testas see if
you're prone to it h is a huge step in
in living your life the right way and trying to
avoid it. Dwayne Brown joining is Pro Bowl left tackle
for the Seattle Seahawks getting ready take on the Philadelphia Eagles.
He's an ambassador for the American Diabetes Association. Of course,
this is Mike Cleets My Cause weekend. So what do

(01:06:23):
cleets for the A B A? What What are What
are those cleats gonna look like? They're pretty cool man.
They're there are colors that like red and white and
and um and black, so you know they're kind of read.
You know, you have the their logo in it with
the American d WT Association in it. Um. I'm going
to post a picture on my Instagram and on Twitter

(01:06:44):
at Dwayne Brown seventy six. UM to show the world
kind of what they look like, and you know, like
I said, show what they're about and and what the
ad is all about. And UM, I think it's pretty cool.
I'm glad the NFL is doing this and this is
my first year UM being involved in it, so I'm
looking forward to it. Helped me out with this. UM. Look,
Russell Wilson sometimes he's back there. He seems like his

(01:07:05):
drops are the deepest drops in the NFL. And then
some of the plays he makes and the scrambles he makes,
it's like, how do you how do you do your
job when you've played with You played with obviously a
bunch of different quarterbacks in Houston, some good, some and
some Ryan Mounts, and you know, it's like you all
over the map. So I guess my question is like,
how does your job and what you do change when

(01:07:25):
you're playing with Russell? It's it's a bit of an adjustment,
you know, having a guy that scrambles you know the
way he does. UM. You know, you first and foremost
you just want to do your job, get to your
spot and and and try to shut guys down. UM.
At the same time, you don't really know where he
might be. Um, so you just try to avoid holding calls.

(01:07:47):
You know what. I know, once he gets out of
the pocket, it's going to be hard for guy to
catch him before he gets ut of the ball or
breaks along the scrimmers and get downfield. Um, you know,
it's it's not it's not difficult for me. You know,
I still operate the same way, but just try to
be aware that you know, he may you know, run
right past me right and left, you know at any
given moment. Uh. And the plays he makes is just incredible.

(01:08:09):
He's a he's a phenomenal player and uh, just very exciting,
you know, and it's it's pretty cool to have a
guy like that it's about for He's also got a
really good probably next to Aaron Rodgers. He's got the
second best hard count in the league. Is that that
that fair? I'd say, so okay. So I mean like, look,
you're you're big fella, and you know you're getting ready

(01:08:29):
to do your job. You're going to kind of your
drop you think about dropping that left leg, but you
gotta worry about his hard count? Like are you are
you talking to yourself? Like it's on two. It's on two.
It's like, how do you how do you what's what's
your process of making sure you don't jump on that hardcount.
I keep the counting in my head, you know, as

(01:08:50):
you have to approach line. You know, you kind of
get a feel for the defense on what's going on.
You make your calls, and then you remind yourself, okay,
that's on too. You know, you might try to, you know,
communicate to the God makes you the same thing, because
you know, when you're making those calls, you can kind
of lose sight of the cadence, and uh, he makes
you believe it. He makes you believe that it's coming,

(01:09:10):
you know, so you just try to keep that in
the back of your mind throughout the whole. Priest reads. Yeah, listen,
he's he's pretty amazing at it, and not jumping is
a lot harder than than it looks like. You're sitting
there watching on TV and you almost get jumpie with
the hard acount. Dwyane, Listen, Uh, this is a this
is a great My my dad had tight TP diabetes
until he died. I know your family has been greatly affected,

(01:09:31):
but by really appreciate what you're doing to bring awareness
to this disease and best of luck against the philadelp
Eagles on Sunday Night football appreciated. Thank you God for
having me. All Right, it's Dwayne Brown of the UH
Seattle Seahawks, so weird. Did not say Houston Texans, right,
super strange. Let's get us bring in Dan Buyer. Dan,
we'll talk about Aaron Rodgers potentially coming back. I'll give

(01:09:52):
you my thoughts on it up coming. But obviously the
I think that the breaking news of the day is
still still Eli Manning. That is correct, Doug, and we
are now curing more and more from the Giants on
their decision to bench Eli Manning and replace him with
Geno Smith for this Sunday's game against the Raiders. Were
two and nine. Right now, we're out of contention and um,

(01:10:13):
our number one job is to still win football games,
but it's my responsibility to make sure we have a
complete evaluation of the roster top to bottom, especially at
the quarterback position moving on to next season. With that,
we're gonna start Gino this week and give him an
opportunity to show what he can do. And that's Giants
ted coach Ben Mackadoo. So Geno Smith starts against the
Raiders in Week thirteen. Also, rookie quarterback David's Webb expected

(01:10:34):
to take some snaps. If it's not this Sunday, it's
at least at some point before the end of the
regular season. Now I asked for Eli, his streak of
two ten consecutive starts will come to an end. The
Giants had offered Eli the opportunity to continue to start
pup be replaced in the games by either Gino Smith
or David's Webb. He declined that option. Doug we are

(01:10:55):
also working on some audio of Eli Manning, who was
emotional today you that Giants locker room forty Niners are
gonna name a starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the
Chicago Bears. That decision expected to come tomorrow. C J.
Bethords dinged up so you could see Jimmy Garoppolo in
that game. Fox Sports reporter Bruce Felman saying Tennessee interviewed
Oklahoma States Mike Gundey and Dallas for their coaching vacancy,

(01:11:18):
as Tennessee also as their eye on produced Jeff Rominency
States Dave Door, and there are reports that Tennessee even
had Peyton Manning reach out to Mike Gunde to tell
him and try to sell him on the balls. Clippers
forward Blake Griffin gonna be out a while with the
kneat injury, could miss a month or two after spreading
his MCL and last night's game against the Lakers, and
the Yankees schedule to interview Carlos Beltron for their manager

(01:11:39):
real vacancy. He just retired a World Series champion playing
for the Houston Astros, Doug, I mean, Kylos Beltron, who
is He's beloved, beloved by by the Yankees organization and
by Yankees fans. But wouldn't that be amazing if? I mean,
it wasn't there his whole career, but he also was
a met as well very well. But to come right
from the field to managing, Yeah, it's crazy to think

(01:12:03):
too as well. Now you're seeing more and more of
guys just moving straight from the field into the skipper seats.
Now listen, I think that actually is doing like we've
had Matt holiday On. I think there's no question he
could be a skipper if he if he wanted to.
I think most of those guys want to spend more
time around their families. The one thing that Beltron separates
Beltron is his family lives in New York. So no

(01:12:24):
matter where he played this year in Houston, this year
in like New York's home. And so while you're still
going on hundred six two days, six two games, eighty
one of those, Um, you get a chance to sleep
in your own bed, like your kids can come out
of the I think his kids a little bit older anyway.
But regardless, Um, what's what else is interesting about Beltron
is as beloved as he as a player, he would

(01:12:46):
not fit the norm most guys who manage our catchers.
Catchers are the point guards of baseball. And it's the catches,
the brad Osomass of the world, the Mic Soshas of
the world. Like you kind of go through like almost
all these guys are catchers, not out fielders, like Beltron
was an outfielder. So how you see the play, how
you see it developed. Um, it should be pointed out

(01:13:06):
that the Yankees they do kind of want a company guy.
They want somebody who's gonna use analytics and it's gonna,
you know, take take the advice of their massive They
traveled on the road in the playoffs with ten. Guys
that did analytics ten that that just that seems like
too much. It seems like too much starty in the
analytics room. Stat show that ten is just enough, just

(01:13:31):
a little play there. Yeah, Um, that's I got it.
I thought it was enough. That's very good, very good.
I thought I thought it was enough. Um. There's been
some talk of whether or not Aaron Rodgers should come
back and play, and we discussed this a little bit.
I discussed it earlier in the herd um And and

(01:13:55):
basically this like, I'm not gonna sit here and say
I got I talked to Aaron Rodgers or whatever, but
I know people who are who are close to Aaron Rodgers.
Their playoff odds have fallen to forty three percentage points points.
There's seven and nine right now. Now, it should be
pointed out that Green Bay they finished up their season
and they've lost five of their last six games since,

(01:14:17):
by the way, losing Aaron Rodgers. They played the Tampa
Buccaneers at home, the Browns on the road. At that
point in time, I believe he could return for Panthers,
Vikings and Lions. What I've been told is if it's
if there's any possibility of making the playoffs. He gonna play,

(01:14:38):
He's gonna play. And I think that when you look
at we we kind of discussed this early with Joe Flacco,
Like what you do in the playoffs so greatly overshadows
what you do in the regular season. I mean, Eli
Mannings had bad years either Manning. I think they've only
made the playoffs but once in the last six years,
once six years and and with that in mind, um

(01:15:03):
Eli and and one of the years maybe both the
years they won the Super Bowl, they were wild card teams.
And so if you're Aaron Rodgers, You're like, look, let
me just get to the playoffs and get a shot.
If I get a shot, like last year they got
to the NFC Championship game, who knows what could happen
this year? Think about all these teams that are the
Vikings still not all in on case Keenum. The Falcons

(01:15:26):
might not make the playoffs, the Seahawks might not make
the playoffs, like the Saints. What could Aaron Rodgers do
in a dome? Like, you can tell me the Saints
are better defensively, how would they do against against Aaron
Rodgers the Rams? I think he would take that even
the Eagles, who they match up Sunday Night Football here
against the Seattle Seahawks. Even the Eagles, who record wise

(01:15:48):
and perception wise are the best team in the NFC.
Carson Wentzer Aaron Rodgers in a in a in a
one game scenario, who are you gonna take? So I
think that if they win, these next Rogers will play,
and I don't think there's any doubt about it, any
doubt about it. An NBA champion knows why David Fitzdale
got fired by the Grizzlies. You'll hear from him next.

At this time, we'd like to play for you a
portion of a previous show on on fs are. Whether

(01:16:34):
it's a The Dan Patrick Show, which I I hosted
for a little bit, or it's uh the Colin Coward
The Herd which um I was on was on you,
or um Clay Travis's show Out kicked the coverage. We
interviewed yesterday and we had a good podcast about it.
Whatever it is, or the shows that are after us
which I have not been on, Steve Gorman, Sports, Ben Maller,

(01:16:56):
Jason Smith, you name it, any of those shows. Um,
we clip and saved the best stuff and we bring
it back like this and now say Stephen Jackson, of
course as an NBA champion, he joins the herd and
undisputed what you can also hear on his Serious Sex

(01:17:17):
sem Channel eighty three and he had this to say
to Colin about why David Fizdal was fired. I don't
know him as a person, so it's not personal. But
it's strictly basketball. You know. It's a lot of guys,
it's a lot of stars that I dominated in my career.
I feel the same way about so it's not personal.
I just don't think he's that good to be getting
paid a hundred million, and you don't think he loves

(01:17:39):
the game. It's easy to see. It's easy to see.
People don't want to say that. I guarantee if you
if you bring in ten thousand Memphis Baileys fans, they're
gonna say the same thing. We're paying him too much
for what he's doing. I think that what you're saying
about Chandler, though I'm not trying to defend you, I
think it's understood in the league. He's making a lot
of money and his passion has ebbed. He's he doesn't
appear to be. He's a fair criticism. I think that's

(01:18:01):
understand that people on the outside looking in as not.
At least that hasn't played injured, and I played with
a broken toe, so I know what'd like to to
suck it up and play for your team. Hurt guys
have never been a position. It's harder to understand. But
fans of the Memphis Grizzlies, trust me, they're saying the
same thing. Um. Look, I don't know enough about how
bad his knee is. I do know that the Grizzlies

(01:18:24):
aren't the first team to give him a bad contract.
I do know that he has buddied up Um to
the to to the Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. I know
he's buddied up to Um. He's uh, he's buddied up
obviously to memphisis owner. I mean, like, look, Chandler is
a likable guy. He's a good looking guy, and he's

(01:18:46):
somebody who not everybody who plays basketball loves basketball. Um,
But I don't know if the injuries or his inability
to stay healthy is because he doesn't love basketball because
his knee just ain't right. But I also think that, like,
look what what brings down with what separates for the
most part of the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors lost

(01:19:08):
last night to the Sacramento Kings, right, and you look
at your like, man, they lost the Kings. K they
didn't play, and Steph didn't play. They're still fourteen a
half point favorites the loss. But what obviously up until
this point has allowed the Warriors to be the dominant
force that they are is that, um that Steph was

(01:19:31):
constantly injured during his first contracts. So his second contract
was only forty four million. That allowed them the flexibility
to get four, not three, big contracts. Draymond also was
a second round pick, so even though he got big money,
he didn't get ridiculous money in his second contract. And
then you've got Clay Thompson and then Kevin Durant now

(01:19:52):
steps making big money and eventually the thought is in
the NBA. Eventually, somebody's gonna have to go, would probably
be Clay. If you had to are ways with one,
Dad's called Laker games forever. That would make sense. What's
happened to the Grizzlies is the opposite. They have three
guys making big money, Marcusol who has been off injured
at times, Mike Conley who has been injured at times,

(01:20:16):
and Chandler Parson since they brought over, and since he
brought over, he's always been injured. They didn't have anybody
on discount, and the three front line players in terms
of contracts that they signed, none of them have been healthy,
most notably that of Chandler Parsons. That's what the Fox said,

(01:20:37):
say it's a hard deal man, But look that that is.
There's a lot of reality to it. There are guys
that don't love the sport. And if you don't love it,
and you gotta be, you got a bunch of money,
especially in basketball. Like but I wouldn't accuse Chandler Parsons
of being a milding guy because I don't know well
enough how bad his knee is. I know, at the
very young age he had a very big micro fracture surgery,

(01:20:59):
and I know that everybody thinks we just come back
from surgery these days, and that's not the case. It's
absolutely positively not the case. All right, things we're tracking
here continued odd statements coming out of New York because
the Giants are not gonna start Eli Manning in the
upcoming week. That's the big breaking news of the day.
Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State's head coach in Oklahoma State alum,

(01:21:22):
has met with Tennessee and his mulling or mulleting over
his decision as to whether or not to become the
valls next head coach? Can you turn down? Peyton? Manning
allegedly called and uh, speaking of the sec Darren McFadden
Arkansas great calls it a career after ten years. When
did you think Darren McFadden stopped playing in the NFL?

(01:21:42):
I like d mac a lot. Was he that you
want to have an OFT injured guy? He was an
OFT injured guy. Plus I'd like to say oft injured um.
And on a side note, and I'm sad Ramos can't
be here to dispute or agree with going to seek
later today and I'm fired up about going to see Coco,

(01:22:05):
Absolutely fired up Coco is a new animated movie out.
See these are the things music that you don't have
yet because you don't have kids, Like I saw a
Wonder which I love. Are there any outside of Star Wars?
There any legit like adult movies that are other good?
I actually have no idea right now. I couldn't even
tell you the last time I went to a movie.

(01:22:25):
No idea. I don't know. I really just you just
Netflix and chill all the time. Yeah, Like, I haven't
had a real desire. I think the last movie I
can remember off the top of my head going to
see in theaters was Done Kirk. It's really good though,
and I love Yeah, it was great. Yeah, it was
a great movie. But other than that, there are very
few movies that I feel like I want to go

(01:22:46):
see in the theaters. Seeing a movie in the theaters
is almost like going to see a professional sporting event
in person, Like maybe every once in a while there's
a particular reason why you want to go see it
in that environment, But other than that, the TVs you
have at home, the comfortability of sitting on your own couch,
all of the you know, if you want to have
a beer or have snacks, or a drink at your

(01:23:09):
own house. It's almost the same exact experience. Well that's
you know, let's listen that that's kind of this is
the Netflix ization or the Amazon Prime ization of your
tel It started with big screens, Like it used to
be a big thing to have a big screen. You
had one friend that had a big screen and it
had those three lights in front of it, and it
was just gigantic, and you go over and be like,

(01:23:30):
this is the coolest thing ever. And then now everybody's
got a nice flight. Then every one person had surround sound.
Now you got like the sound bar, which is like
the same thing. In the summer, you got a base
in the house, and then you can get movies almost
almost right when they come out. That's the same thing
that's happening to the NFL. Why would you go to
games and you can sit there and watch in your couch.
Why would you pay money to see Joe Flacco play?

(01:23:55):
Or why would you pay money to see Geno Smith play?
With the gi and started doing is just like another
professional sports team. I'll tell you who it is next.
It's not football. It's in the Doug Otlip Show, Fox
Sports Radio, The New York Giants have bench quarterback Eli Manning.
Gino Smith will start Sunday against the Oakland Raiders. You

(01:24:16):
know called me in told me we wanna start splint
some time and now we're you know, just kind of
thought fastist. Give give Gino the start and and um,
you know I'll back him up. I'll be a good teammate.
You know. I don't like it, but uh, it's for football.
You handle it and udn't do my job now. Manning
was given the option to continue to start games, but
he wouldn't finish them to extend his consecutive start streak,

(01:24:39):
which stands right now at two games. He declined that option.
Gino Smith will start Sunday against the Raiders. Also expected
to see rookie Davis Webb get snaps between now and
the end of the regular season. Running Back Darren McFadden
announced his retirement today, while Clippers forward Blake Griffin will
be out up to eight weeks of action because of
a spring mcl and his left nee suffered last night
against the Lakers. I'm d buyer, what I'm tug got

(01:25:05):
leave show Fox Sports Radio coming to you from the
beautiful city of Los Angeles. I mean beautiful city of
Los Angeles, right, I mean music, Look around it is
absolutely gorgeous where we are, UM and and you know,
part of our perspective is based upon the place in

(01:25:27):
which we live. Things we see UM on a daily basis.
It kind of creates what we think is right, is
trendy is you know? Like UM, I tell people all
the time that there are different parts of New York City.
If you go to Midtown, New York, you're either going
to the tourist trap area of Times Square, which is

(01:25:49):
not really New York City, or you're going to wear
people work in Midtown, which people overdressed. They wear suits
and ties everyday work. But you go to other parts
of New York City and people are more hipsters. Right,
I'm gonna Soho in Tribeca and they're they're dressing differently
like they dressed in in Brooklyn. In California, it's it's
no different right where I live in Orange County, uh,

(01:26:12):
closer to the coast. You know, guys don't get dressed
up for the most part in suits and ties. They
wear they wear jeans and sneakers or flip flops with
their jeans and shirt, never tucked in either a hat.
You know, women always been a mesh back hat whatever.
You go to different parts of the state and people
wearing different gear. But your perspective is based upon where

(01:26:35):
you live, the other teams in your area. You you
think of ideas. The story of the day is the
New York Giants have decided to at least temporarily pull
the plug on Eli Manning as their starting quarterback. Here's
their head coach Ben McAdoo on the decision to make
the change. Oh sorry, but I thought we had that one.
We do not. We don't. We have Eli Manning on

(01:26:56):
the change. Take a listen, hard day to handle list,
but uh, you know, hanging there and figured out the
hardest things. It's up there. Yeah, Coach Mac you know,
called me in, told me they werena start splent some
time and now we're you know, just kind of thought
it's best just give give Gno the start and and uh,

(01:27:17):
you know I'll back him up. I'll be a good teammate.
You know. I don't like it, but us for football,
you handle it. And uh didn't do my job, you
know what this reminds me of. Look, the reason the
New York Yankees didn't pull the trigger on retiring Alex Rodriguez,

(01:27:38):
on retiring Mark to Shara on announcing that, like, remember
Alex Rodriguez in his last year with the Yankees was gone,
like the last two months they paid him to walk away.
They negotiate a deal to where he'd be around in
spring training as a coach, whatever, but they wanted him gone.
They didn't want him on the roster because they didn't
want him taking at bats, just heavy to have him around.

(01:28:01):
He couldn't hit him, were like, and they retired him.
And to share, oh, this is after Jet retiring and
Mariana retiring, and they played all their young players at
the end of the season two years ago, and Gary
Sanchez was unbelievable, and they took a good, strong look
at Sanchez. They took a good look at Judge and

(01:28:22):
Aaron Judge didn't play well, but they gave Judge cement bats,
gave Greg Bird a bunch of bats, threw some younger
pictures out there, and they actually made a run. And
they actually made a run towards the wild card. They
didn't didn't make the wild card. But the reason they
waited so long was they had season ticket renewals and

(01:28:43):
they waited until the season ticket renewals had already been
sent out and the initial ones were sent back, and
then like, all right, guess what a ra is not
gonna be part of the team, Like this is a
problem actually in New York with the Knicks for a
long time, Like the real reason that Carmelo Anthony was
resigned was management went to Phil Jackson said he look, man,
if it's even close, you gotta bring him back, because

(01:29:04):
we can't sell any tickets unless you've got Karmelo Anthony.
We can't sell tickets on the rest of these guys.
Nobody will buy. Marina be empty. It's still important to
get the guys to come to games. It's still a
thing here. And at the end of the year, you
can scrap it, like, look, this has been done. We
act like I've never seen this before, Karmen. They shut
Karmelo Anthony down two years in a row in New York,

(01:29:27):
two years in a row. Remember one year they had
the knee surgery that they put off until the All
Star break. He played the All Star Game, then had
knee surgery, and then you have been fine to play.
At the end of You're like, hey, same thing happened
last year with Karmlo Anthony. We saw this with the
New York Yankees, in which they parted ways with Alex Rodriguez.

(01:29:50):
And so while everybody's feelings get hurt, and you're like, dude,
how could how could Eli Manning, who vouched for Ben
McAdoo and Ben mc could do his offense? How could
Ben McAdoo go to him and say, I'm benching you.
It's pretty easy, I think you said. Look, the Yankees
did this, the the Nixt did this. Other teams like

(01:30:16):
Niners aren't even playing Garoppolo. Like, we gotta take a
look what we have, what assets we have. If they're
really good, we could trade them, or we could trade you.
But we this is we're not going anywhere. What is
the point? And yeah, I don't commend Eli Manning for
sitting down when he's given apparently the opportunity to start.

(01:30:38):
I commend him for not wanting to put up empty stats.
I mean, how many quarterbacks have we seen. We talked
about Joe Flacco and like, look, he didn't want to
put up empty stats, but the four thousand yards passing
last year, those are empty stats. Look, when you get
into sports towns and you see somebody else turn over
their roster and be successful, and you're in. You're with

(01:30:59):
the um You're with the Giants. Hey, the Jets did
this last year. The Jets started playing all their young guys,
and look what they did. They cleaned house. Darrell Reeve's gone.
I mean, look at all the guys that that are
gone from last year's team. Look what them next did.

(01:31:19):
Look at what the Yankees did. Their big name guys
are all gone. And and look if he's if if
Davis Webb can't play, then he can't play. You still
have Eli many like, well, Eli's Eli Manning feelings will
be hurt. Like, okay, they own his rights. If he
wants to play quarterback, they can fix put a team

(01:31:39):
in around him. I gotta take a look. But Gino Smith,
you gotta audition him. Can he be a starter? I mean, like, look,
the Gino thing is kind of a joke. He's like, look,
we'll let you start. You know. It's like the guy
who wants to go solo and the band's like, hey, look,
when we take a break, you can play one song acapella. Okay,
we'll go get some water, wipe our towels off. And

(01:32:01):
we come back. Then you gotta play all our songs.
That's what ginos there for. But David's Webb. They want
to give him, they want to give him a good look,
and if he's really good, maybe they start him, or
maybe they trade him. I mean, you can sell this
a million different ways to be like, hey, look, Jimmy
Garoppolo started for a game, or started two games, finished

(01:32:25):
one with the New England Patriots. They trade him away
for a second round pick. We think Davis web was
pretty good. If he comes in, he spends a little
bit and we can move him for a second round pick.
What if we got you another player for that? Maybe
we move you, maybe we move on from you. Let's
see what the other guy's got, Like, what is the
what is the point of putting you out there? This

(01:32:47):
will prolong your career? And I'm sure he wanted nothing
of it. I'm sure he feels embarrassed by it. But like, look,
if you you hang around long enough in any profession
like this idea agism, of course, there's ages. Um, your
contract gets bloated, your ego gets a little inflated, and

(01:33:10):
you act like you've never been benched, never been pulled,
ever before in your life, it happens. I mean, heck,
if I'm Kurt Warner just railed on the Giants, and
what the heck are they doing? Here's a classy guy
and this is not a classy move. Like, Hey, Kurt
Warner's career was done, the Giants moved on. The Giants
replaced him with Eli Manning. Then he went to the

(01:33:31):
desert and found new life. No reason you like, can't
do that. You can't go to Arizona, You can't go
to Denver. Arizona is gonna need a quarterback next year.
Denver is gonna need a quarterback next year, the corback
this year. Jacksonville is gonna need a quarterback next year.
Tom Cofflin's there, Houston is probably gonna need a quarterback
like Deshaun Watson. Will he be back? How good will
he be? I don't know. Plenty of teams need quarterbacks

(01:33:57):
and Eli still this will this You could sell it
a like, Look, if you want to retire, you want
to quit, then you didn't want want to play anyway.
But if you don't want to retire, don't want to quit.
This doesn't mean you're done. We weren't gonna win anyway.
This will only help you get better players around you,
and it'll help us really take a look at our
young guys. That's what happened the Yankees, That's what happened
with the Knicks, That's what happened with a little bit

(01:34:19):
with the Jets, and that's what's gonna happen with the
New York Giants coming up next. Uh. First, love as
an army. You can help, you can. You can join
the fight, help the Salvation Army fight for those in
need all over our community this Christmas by going to

(01:34:59):
A three three S a L Joint. Tennessee is still
searching for their next head coach. There's one potential target
they're going after that just might work. I'll tell you
who that is. Next. This is the Doug Godlap Show
on Fox Sports Radio with True Car. You can find
out what other people in your area paid for the
same car you're looking for and on average save over
three th m s r p. Whether you're looking for

(01:35:22):
a new or used car, Visit True Car and enjoying
more confident car buying experience. Fox Sports Radio. If you
if you missed um, if you missed our would you

(01:35:43):
say music? How would you what was the is the
adjective you would use to describe the interview with Clay
Travis yesterday? Lively? Lively? Lively by? Are you said you
listen to it? Really amazing? How many people in the
media listen to listen to that? How you can download
the Doug Gotlip Show podcast? Um? Uh by? Or how

(01:36:04):
would you describe the interview? Well done? Yeah? I I
really thought that Doug, that you hit on a lot
of key points. And maybe it's just you guys know
how media works. I mean, you're pretty animated but never
got personal. And I thought the way that Clay handled
his response was well done. I thought it was an

(01:36:25):
entertaining twenty minutes of radio good. I appreciate that feedback
from somebody I respect a great deal. Um. I think
that m m hmmm, uh look like look Here's this
is the difference in me and anybody else is I've
always been able to separate the person from from the statement. Now, Like, look,

(01:36:46):
there's a lot of my my media brethren who don't
like Clay. I just I think that Clay kind of
just flipped from going to the the guy who's trying
to be the adult in the room and the literally
facts about feeling approach to like he kind of became
that guy and it, I don't know, feel like it
should be eye opening for Clay, but he didn't. He
doesn't see it that way. Um and and and he

(01:37:09):
did he went into his fandom about Tennessee football and
how that's always been his school, that's always been his team,
and I think he's looking at it through through colored glasses.
All that said, I still can respect him and his
show and really not like the approach that he and
that he led and balls Voles fans took after the

(01:37:32):
Shianna hires made like they're making great Shianna act like
he didn't do an unbelievable job at Rutgers, Like I
don't know, Like I never thought of Rutgers football ever
before and rarely have thought of it without a punchline
ever since, and Shianna was the architect behind building it,
and so I actually understood all of that, but it
was the it was the personal side that's not necessarily

(01:37:54):
to me and him, but to the attacks at Shianna
because he was linked faintly in a civil case, uh
to the Sandusky thing. He might have seen something five
years ago, to which I just I felt like that
was just throwing in kind of a dirty political play
because you didn't like he didn't like that here that said, like, look,

(01:38:14):
I don't think Tennessee is the greatest job on earth.
I don't think it's the worst. Um. I think it's
a top twenty five, top thirty job. And right now,
in their moment of great despair, when they've gone through
you know, Lane Kiff and Derek Dooley and Butch Jones,
they were gonna they were gonna move a heaven and
earth to try and make this thing work to begin with.

(01:38:36):
Now you throw in the Shiano disaster and they're basically
only left with two possible choices. One is to hire
somebody who's not really a head coach, a Team Martin type.
You're like, well, you know, he's a Tennessee guy, and
that makes sense. Like, look, that was a little bit
of what I kind of thought would make sense at

(01:38:56):
Oklahoma State based upon the timing of everything that went
down when bred Underwood left. Um. And you can save
some money that way and fill out a great staff,
or you can go after somebody else who might be
a little underpaid, might not be terribly happy where they are,
might have topped out of their current situation. That's why

(01:39:18):
the Gundy thing actually makes sense to me. I think
he's happier than he's been um And I think he
got a new contract. He's making tons of money. But
one of your might Gundy. That's a conversation you absolutely have,
and if you leave it the right way, it doesn't
really Remember you had a conversation with the Baylor people
last year. He wasn't going to Baylor. Baylor's a train wreck.

(01:39:39):
It's gonna be bad for three or four years before
they get that thing going. He ain't doing that. But Tennessee,
like the the only logical there's two logical conclusions you
make with Tennessee as opposed Oaklhom State, maybe three. The
first is you're topped out right and at some point
you need to drive a different way to work. Some
guys can go to work for years the exact same way.

(01:40:01):
Statement stopped and stopped the same coffee shop. See the
same people, have the same friends, all that stuff. Some
people can do that. Some people are not. I've moved
a bunch, probably too much. So three networks now in
five years. It's a lot. And my wife and we
moved a ton, and we try to keep certain things stay.

(01:40:23):
It's moving his heart. On the other hand, starting over
can be super refreshing, super refreshing, challenging, and when you
don't have the sweat equity with equity with people like
that's a hard one. Now. John Curry was at Kansas
State when Gundy was at Oaklahoma State, so there's a
mutual respect there. But boy e um. And then the

(01:40:48):
last thing is they're just gonna pay you so much
money that it doesn't matter, right, Like, all right, do
i really want to move from Oklahoma to Tennessee? Like
I've pretty much done every my gun you remember, grew
up in Oklahoma, and though he was assistant coach at
Baylor and assistant coach at Maryland, um of his what
is he's fifty, probably like forty years of his life
have been spent in Oklahoma. There's got to be more

(01:41:10):
out there, and so Tennessee is the SEC. It's different,
it's new, it's different. Recruiting it's okay, I gotta see it.
And if somebody's gonna pay you a fifty million dollars
over seven years, what's the loss, right, what's really the loss?
You go down is to this point the best coach

(01:41:30):
in Oklahoma State history, and you take a swing of
the fences. You can take a swing of defences. Now.
The problem at the top of the mountain I found
is that there there is nowhere to sit up there.
It just isn't and everybody else is trying to climb
up and and and even when you achieve success, like
do I think he could win a national championship at Tennessee?

(01:41:52):
I do? I think he could. Actually, I don't know
if you could win one in Oklahoma State. Um. I
think it would be hard at both places, but more
difficult at Oklahoma State. I mean, think about it, senior quarterback,
senior wide receiver, star running back, and you still lose
your three toughest games, all home games in with a
soft schedule, Like that's the best it's gonna get is

(01:42:14):
a ten win season after Remember, they didn't even make
it to the Big twelve championship game, let alone the
National College Football Playoff. So I see it. But I
will tell you this, if you obtain ultimate success winning
a national title at Tennessee, we'll ring hollow as opposed
to winning a nation championship at Oklahoma State. Maybe that
doesn't matter because a fifty million reasons why, you know,

(01:42:36):
maybe it doesn't matter. But um, the place you grew up,
the place that took a chance on you, I don't know,
that's pretty hard to leave. What what does a three
times Super Bowl champion think of what the Giants have
decided to do? Well? Ask Mark slayerth He joins us
in moments. But first, here's Dan Buyer Boy. The New

(01:42:58):
York Giants at two and nine making the biggest headlines
in the National Football League as today. They announced that
Eli Manning will not start Sunday against the Raiders. Instead,
he goes to the bench. You know, Smith will start
that game in week thirteen. There's more to the story.
The Giants released his statement saying that they actually approached

(01:43:19):
Eli and said that he could start the game. To
continue his consecutive start streak, which sits at two and
ten games. However, that is not going to be the case,
as Eli declined the request from the Giants, and here's
why you started, knowing you're gonna come out of the
game to keep a streak alive. Maybe that's not that's
not what it's about. You know, it's not a preseason

(01:43:39):
game where how you're gonna play, you know, start to
the half. And it's not fair. It's not fair to me,
not fair to Gino. That's not how you how you play.
You know, he played a win. You're name, you know, quarterbacks,
starting quarterback. He answered, job to go go win the
football game. And you know you're just gonna play a
little bit. I didn't wanna, don't wanna did. I feel
that was the right way to play. Rookie Davis Webb

(01:44:02):
is expected to get some snaps as well, either on
Sunday or at some point between the end of the
regular season, But the fact of the matter is the
Giants just benched Eli Manning running back Darren McFadden announced
his retirement today. Forty nine is expected to start a
starting naming studying quarterback for Sunday's game. Against the Bears tomorrow.
Some injury news in the NBA. Clippers forward Blake Griffin's
gonna be out up to eight weeks of actually because

(01:44:22):
of a knee injury. No structural damage in that knee,
but he does have a spring mcl suffered last night
against the Lakers. Lakers get the Warriors tomorrow. Forward Kevin
Durant and Steph Curry questionable for Golden State because of
injuries during a springed ankle, Curry dealing with a hand issue.
Tiger was just going to tee it up Thursday in
the Hero World Challenge, his first competitive event since early February.

(01:44:44):
I feel fantastic and a lot of friends have helped me.
And you know, I didn't, as I was alluded to
Jeff over here, I didn't realize how bad my back was.
It was bad. Four procedures dug in his career, the
latest one in April. But Tiger says, yes, feeling fantastic.
We'll see it up on Thursday. I'm excited to see
Tiger Woods. Like, Look, golf is better when Tiger is good.

(01:45:05):
Let's just you know, golf is better when Tiger is good. Um,
That's that's really what it comes down to, let's welcome
in Mark slay at three time Super Bowl champion of course,
um NFL on Fox analyst and he joins us now
on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Uh stink. What's your assessment
of what the Giants have decided to do? Well, I mean,
I'm fairly shocked about it. Obviously, it's the end of

(01:45:27):
the Eli Manning era in New York. There's no question
about that. I mean, um, and I can definitely see
him leaving and heading to Jacksonville, where you know, his
former coach is the kind of the president of the
Grand Pooba of all things football, and they've got a
really good football team established there. So um, you know
that that part makes sense to me. But I'm fairly

(01:45:48):
shocked that, uh, this is the way it ends in
New York with Eli Manning. Is there any scenario to
which you think, Hey, Davis Webb, like like in Jimmy
Garraw p up makes himself valuable trade asset and the
Giants rebuild with Eli still as their guy, maybe draft
another quarterback. But but like like Tom Brady kept his job,

(01:46:12):
Eli keeps his. No, I I don't, I mean, I
think that ship is sailed. I mean, if you're Eli Manning,
do you want to be part of that organization? Now?
Do you want to continue? You know, they said, hey,
we'll let you keep your starting streak alive, but you
know we're gonna ask you to, you know, to to
move over and we're gonna play the other guys. No,
the riding's on the wall. It's time to roll on.

(01:46:32):
Its time to see, you know where else I can play. So,
I mean, I'm just taking a player's perspective. If I'm
Eli Manning, I'm done. I'm done with New York Giants.
I'll be professional and i'll help, you know, help groom
the young guys and I'll help they get them ready.
But as far as being a part of the organization anymore,
I'm I'm done with the organization. It's time to move
on alright. So, um, why start Gina Smith? Probably because

(01:46:58):
Webb hasn't started our Webb hasn't really had a legitimate
practice time, so he's probably just not ready. He hasn't beginning,
you know, at least Gino Smith beginning the second team
reps and um, and it probably is exactly that that
he hasn't gotten any reps. So he's probably you know,
from a game planning standpoint, he's probably not ready yet.
So you're gonna give him a couple of weeks to
kind of get some of those reps and and work

(01:47:20):
his way into that. And then I would imagine, you know,
he'll get he'll get some opportunity not only to play,
but he'll get an opportunity to start towards the end
of the season. That's march Leraths joining us on the
Doug Otlet Show. How fixable is the Cancer Chief's offense?
I think it's you know what, I think it's been
kind of exposed. I mean, Doug, I think a lot

(01:47:41):
of what you look at with Kansas City is they
are a team that, um that really threw a lot
of I candy get you with all their motions and
you know, they're all their unique kind of shuffle passes
and you know, and the jet motion stuff and the
options and stuff on the outside, and you know, they've

(01:48:02):
been exposed I think in the middle of the football field,
both offensively and defensively, their inability to stop the run,
their inability to kind of stud up in that area,
and and now they're inability to run the ball. You
look at early in the season when they started five
and oh, I mean Kareem Hunt was running wild, averaging
six yards and carry or whatever. And now all of
a sudden that you've you've gotten to see all that

(01:48:23):
I candy, and you've gotten to say, hey, you know what,
we've got to have great eye discipline and this is
what we have to do stop this team. I think
what you've seen is this offensive line can't produce on
a consistent basis. They're not running the ball on a
consistent basis. If you look back to even that five
and oh star Alex Smith was one of the most
sack quarterbacks in football. At that point, um wasn't turning
the ball over. But now I think, and I think

(01:48:45):
teams have got a better idea of what they're doing,
a better idea of how to defend all the options
stuff and all the reed zone stuff. And and what
you see is um is their their lack of talent upfront,
their lack of ability to just line up and beach
it down. Um, that's what's come to the forefront right now,
Mark Layer joining us on the doug Otlips show. All right,

(01:49:05):
what about Dak Prescott? Is this Dak getting exposed. Is
it does getting exposed? Is it? Uh? Is it the
coaching staff getting exposed? What's going on with Dallas's offense? Yeah?
I think Dak is a young quarterback, and I think
Dak is one of those guys that has to be supported,
you know. I think he's a guy you need the
running game. I think he's a guy that you need
a great offensive line, and you need receivers to beat

(01:49:28):
one on one coverage. I mean, I think, like any
on quarterback, you need, you need to be supported, you need,
you need all those things. You know. I always look
to Dallas with a marginal defense or you know, a
young defense. Anyhow, I looked at them as a team
that has to be able to control the tempo, control
the clock, control the time possession, um keep their quarterback

(01:49:49):
out of harm's way, you know, like like I think
all young quarterbacks need that. And I think this is
some of Dak Prescott having too much, you know, to
put too much of the responsibility. It falls upon his
shoulders and it gets you know that the the issues
that they've had at the left tackle position, trying to
replace smith Um and part of that is coaching. You know,

(01:50:12):
when I look at I go back to the Philadelphia Eagles.
They're playing the Denver Broncos. This is earlier in the season,
and they lose their starting left tackle and Jason Peters
and you know, the guy is all pro. He's as
good as it gets. And they completely dismantle the Broncos
and and they support that young left tackle by what
do they do? You know, they basically run the zone

(01:50:33):
reach stuff, and they run at the pass rushers, and
they give them three step drops, and they give them
some things to let them attack, and they do a
lot of different things. From a coaching standpoint, it's more
than just chipping or having a back over there. It's
about the way you call plays. And they do all
those things, and they support that left tackle and they
don't skip a beat man. The Broncos don't even sniff

(01:50:54):
Carson Wentz in that game. And then a couple of
weeks ago, you know, the Dallas Cowboys lose Smith at
the left tackle position, and they roll up and basically
let this kid Green out there and say, hey, you know,
go ahead and protect him five and seven step drops
without any help, and you know, we'll just see how
it goes. And it's at some point You're like, at
what point did you think you know he's gonna figure

(01:51:14):
that thing out? And he never did, And so you know,
some of that or a lot of that is coaching
as well. So I think with the Dallas Cowboys, there's
no easy answer. I think I think Dax's the young quarterback,
and I think he's an exceptional talent, but I think
he's young. Um, you put too much on his shoulders.
You lost your starting left tackle. Dez is not getting

(01:51:34):
the separation that that you require for, you know, kind
of a big time ace, number one receiver, And I
think all those things have have kind of come together
to create the issues that you have in Dallas offensively
right now. Marsh Laire at three times Super Bowl champion.
Of course, you can hear him on the Herd. You
can see him on a dispute, you can see him
called games the NFL on Fox, joining us here on
the Doug Gotlips Show on Fox Sports Radio. Um, look,

(01:51:57):
I know Joe Flacco has been good in the playoffs,
and we saw him on that on the Super Bowl run.
But how much more do we have to see of
Joe Flacco before we start to realize the reason people
kept questioning whether or not he was elite. Was because
they knew he was an elite. Yeah, yeah, I mean
I think there's a couple of things, you know. I
mean you look at Mike Wallace and and you're thinking, really,

(01:52:18):
I mean, are they gonna get anybody? Maclin had one catch? Um,
I think that from a talent standpoint there, you know,
they're fairly average. Um, they're running the ball fairly well.
But yeah, Joe Flacco is you know, he's another one
of those quarterbacks that needs a lot of support around him,
a lot of things, but uh to be lined up
around him. And you know, it's funny because you look

(01:52:39):
back on it and you see why, Um, the Baltimore
Ravens didn't want to play. And remember they got into
dispute over money, and it was like they wanted he
wanted nineteen a year or something like that, and they
wanted to go off from eighteen year. It was like
a million dollars a separated them. And then they go, well,
we'll just let you play it out. He plays it out,
and then they have to pay him twenty five year

(01:53:00):
because he goes on that epic playoff round where he
threw eleven touchdowns and no interceptions and um and the
rest is history. Now you're looking at it like, wow,
we've really misplayed that one. It's always it's always better,
you know, in my mind, to make sure you know
exactly what you got and to go after a guy
a year earlier as opposed to a year late. And
I think you got what you got. Joe Flacco is,

(01:53:24):
you know, an average NFL quarterback. If he's got a
great team around him, he can win games. And if
he doesn't, you know, if he doesn't have great talent
around him, he's gonna struggle. And I think that's what
he is right now. But I think there's probably twenty
five of the starting quarterbacks that are pretty much identical
with that. Yeah. Yeah, that's and those guys, UM would

(01:53:44):
not be termed to be elite. Mark Layris joining us
on the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
What do you make of the idea that if they
they still are in in the playoff hunt, Aaron Rodgers
could come back week fifteen. Yeah, I think if they're
in the playoff front, which is highly unlikely. Um, football

(01:54:07):
players want to play, you know, Aaron Rodgers wants to
play and as long as you know, as long as
you look at and say, there's no no chance to
him injuring himself any any greater. I mean, we heard
that with Tony Romo to though, right, didn't he come
back and get reinjured. So you know, I look at
it like, if if you've got a legitimate shot, then

(01:54:27):
I go ahead and let the guy play. I just
don't think you have a legitimate shot, Doug. And And
with that said, I mean, I think you you've got
to let that thing heal and make sure that he's right.
I mean, I understand that the NFL isn't like the
rest of the world. You know, you have your nie
scope in the NFL, and you expect to play a
week or two later. Um, the rest of the world,
you know, you go, you get four weeks off and

(01:54:48):
then you start this really methodical rehab program. That's not
how it works. So football players want to play. I'm
sure that Aaron Rodgers wants to play, um, and he's
really your only chance of of you know, getting that
playoff forth. But I would just imagine that at this
point it's probably best to shut the guy down. UM.

(01:55:08):
But if you know, if if the rest of the
league is so mediocre. It's so mediocre like it is,
and you know, steep the mediocrity and in your playoff
chances are still alive and you just had to win,
you know, two weeks in a row. There are three
weeks fifteen, sixteen, and seventeen, you know, uh, to get
in then, I mean, I'm sure Aaron Rodgers gonna be

(01:55:29):
lobbying for it. And and hell, I mean, once you
get in, anything can happen. We've seen that happen over
the last few years. You get in, I mean, who
knows what could happen? So I would like I would,
I would find it highly unlikely that he'll play. But
if they get to that point, um, it's gonna be
hard to keep Aaron Rodgers out of lineup, all right,
help me out, um am? I am I crazy for

(01:55:52):
buying into the Chargers. No, they're the best team in
the FC West, not the a f C West is
any good. But you know, you look at where they
are right now. They figured it out offensively, they're playing
pretty well on the offensive side of the ball. We
knew their front seven was gonna be pretty decent, or
at least their front four with the pass rushers they've had.

(01:56:13):
You know, the issue was tackling really early in the season,
they were the worst team in the league as far
as tackling the center. They they fixed some of those
issues right now and they've got some confidence. They're playing
with some confidence right now. And as long as you've
got a quarterback that you know you can count on,
that you know is an elite level type of quarterback,
and you know you you play, you you rushed the

(01:56:36):
opponent's quarterback and you tackle, well, you've got a chance
to be in games right now. By far. The way
that this a f C West is playing out right now,
there by far, even though their record isn't the best,
there by far the best team in the a f
C West. The way they're playing uh right now currently,
I think they I'm with you, Doug, I think they
win this an f C West. I think they find

(01:56:57):
a way to win at Kansas City seems to continue
to be reeling and come on, the Raiders are a mess.
The Broncos are are worse than a mess. So yeah,
I think the San Diego Chargers win that division. L
A Chargers win that division. Yeah, either either Chargers could
In fact, when that when when that division last thing.
I know, the record says the Steelers are nine and two. Okay,

(01:57:18):
I understand that one six in a row. I get it, Okay,
But the Packers without Aaron Rodgers pushed them to limit.
The Colts without a lot and especially Andrew Luck pushed
them to the limit. Um, I'm just like, why aren't
the Steelers better? Yeah? I think the Steelers from a

(01:57:38):
maturity standpoint, they play the level of their competition. Why,
I'm not a sure And I'm with you. They're nine
and two, that's great. I know what happens when the
Steelers faced the New Patriots. The Patriots spank them, you know,
they ragged all of them and then they send them
on their way, and so they could be undefeated going

(01:57:59):
into that game him in a couple of weeks, And
you know what, I'll reserve judgment on the Steelers until
I see him play that game. And you know, they
went out and got Hayden and they've made defensive changes,
and you're gonna sit there and say, man, they've got
a lot of chance to be really good. Whatever. But
I'm gonna tell you that is a team right now
that seems to play to whatever the level of their

(01:58:20):
competition is, they keep everything close. They don't blow people out,
or they usually don't blow people out. And until I
see him line up against the New England Patriots and
play the Patriots and actually make a game of it,
because it hasn't happened, and Lord only knows how long,
I'm just not gonna buy into their supremacy in the
a f C by any stretch of the imagination. Mark

to start planning for the future. Find out who next.

(01:59:48):
hmmm mmmmmmmmmm um. We got Giants news, we got Tennessee news,
we got Bears news. Uh, we have uh Florida football news.
We got lots of stuff. Let's get to it all.
Here's Dan Buyer in the press, the Press, Doug, so

(02:00:12):
much to get to. But we start, of course, in
the Big Apple today, where the New York Giants made
a quarterback change. Eli Manning heads to the bench. Gino
Smith will get the start, but not before. The Giants
actually offered Eli the opportunity to start the game but
not finish it to keep his consecutive start streak alive. Instead,
it will end Sunday against the Raiders. This was Eli

(02:00:34):
earlier today. You started knowing you're gonna come out of
the game to keep a streak alive. Maybe that's not
that's not what it's about. You know, it's not a
preseason game where how you're gonna play, you know, start
to the half, and it's not fair. It's not fair
to me, not fair to Gino. That's not how you
how you play. You know, he played a win. You're
named this, you know, quarterbacks starting quarterback. You think your

(02:00:55):
jab to go go win the football game, and you
know you're just gonna play a little bit. I didn't
want to, they want to. I feel that was right.
There was Eli putting the kabash on that move by
the Giants. Look, you know, I understand we all take
it very very personally. And and Eli, you know, he
on one end, he's like the streaks not important to me,

(02:01:16):
and he's like, well, I just don't want the streak
to be empty. I just don'ta be like, okay, look,
did you really want to go out there on a
two and nine team and get your brains beat in?
Like without Odell Beckham Jr. Without you know, anybody to
hand the ball off too, Like okay, sure, Um, I
just don't think. I don't like how the Giants seem
to put it on Eli. I May made a post

(02:01:37):
on Twitter It's like, hey, honey, I know we've been
married thirteen years, but I'm gonna go date other people.
But if you want to still be married to me,
then then that's cool. But that that's on you. That's
what it seemed like the giants asked for. They asked
for an open relationship. Is that what you're talking about? Yeah,
like you know, like, if you don't want to stay
married to me, that's on you. But this is what
I'm going to do. And I think that's garbage. I

(02:01:57):
think it is too. What are they supposed to do?
Just go him? Like I'm sure, Like I'm sure the
giants like out of respect for him, Like look, we're
doing this out of respect for you, like we we
we we think you're great. I mean it didn't come.
Obviously didn't come. That's the issue. I think. I think
that's what they just misjudged. Like it just is, man,

(02:02:18):
I just think it's bad all around. Yeah, yeah, I'm
not gonna. I'm not gonna. I'm not gonna Like how
about this From Chicago, there's a report from Pro Football
Weekly that Bears GM Ryan Pace already has a list
of candidates to replace John Fox's head coach. So you
would say, all right, well I'm not Firefox now and
let the Bears play out the string and go from there. Well,
the report says they don't want to give the interim

(02:02:40):
job to Vic Fangio because they're afraid the Bears would
thrive or at least do somewhat well under Fangio, making
him a candidate to keep the job full time, and
he isn't gonna be one of the guys considered for
the coaching job. So interesting. It's one of the reasons
why the Bears reportedly haven't made a move on John Fox.
It's also because they don't want to be everybody wants
to tank. Dude, tanking works. I told you, like the Astros,

(02:03:03):
tanking works. I didn't stop pretty. It's not cool. It sucks.
If you're a fan, you know, do You're like, this
is why I would never buy season tickets ever to
any team ever, ever, ever, never will never do it.
Thinking sucks. Florida it works. Florida is gonna pay former
head football coach Jim mckaway in a seven and a
half billion dollar buyout. With that first payment of three

(02:03:24):
point seven five million coming up on Friday. The rest
of the five installments will be paid through one but
that original buyout Doug was thirteen million dollars, negotiated down
to about seven and a half after there was no
evidence that he and his family received death threats while
he was the head coach of the Gators. Yeah. I mean,
look the I don't know if he'll ever coach again. Like,

(02:03:46):
I don't know if you come back from that one,
you know, lie to your boss like that. But like
what a great country, right, you know, you get fired
three years in and you're gonna get paid seven point
five million dollars due to that, Like you don't have
to work, and you know, I don't know. I would
have off said, you know, I just I would hold
parties each of the days that my next installment was

(02:04:06):
coming in, you know, like July one, because that's what
he's going to receive. Another one party at mcawaine's. It's
a time to celebrate. Um will they be celebrating tonight
to Clemson South Carolina. Well Tigers could be number one
of the college football playoff rankings which come out Doug
in a little over an hour. Alabama number one last week,
Miami number two a week ago. They both lost this
past weekend. Look, I think Miami drops way down, probably

(02:04:31):
to like six or seven. Um. Like, the question becomes,
if they beat Clemson, is that going to be enough?
And I think the answer is probably yes, because I
think Clemson I might will be the number one team
in the country. And finally, Clippers forward Blake Griffin has
a sprain mcl in his left knee. Normal recovery time

(02:04:51):
for that injury up to eight weeks of action according
to the Clippers. But the Clip is gonna be without
Blake Griffin for at least a month or two. And
you know, the Clippers had finally gotten they Look, don't
kid yourself. The Clippers hadn't figured anything out. They figured
out to play the Hawks, the Kings, and the Lakers.
That's your best opportunity for success, and that is the press.

(02:05:12):
Get out there and pressed. That was the press. All right,
I'll be hitting the road guys tomorrow. I'll be in
Nashville and then calling game in Bowling Green, Kentucky on Facebook. So, uh,
this is tis the twenty one century Big Game Night,
Xavier hosting Baylor. UM. Baylor, of course, has Mono la
compt who's a tremendous point guard transfer from Miami, and

(02:05:34):
Xavier has Trayvon Blewett, who's back for a senior season. Obviously,
Xavier very very good at home. This is Baylor's first
road game. Xavier and four and a half. Of course,
I'm gonna take x throw up. The x per Do
a big favorite over Louisville. That's because they're gonna blow
out Louisville. David Padge's first big game on the road.
This is the doug otlip Show.
