Speaker 1 (00:00):
Boom, What up America? Dog gotli show? Fox Sports Radio
Live from the City of Angels We've got a really
bad fire not far from our studios. This this microphone
is on fire. Oh, terrible analogy, timed analogy. We didn't
stop the fire. Sorry, Billy Joel is singing in my ear. Um. No,
(00:22):
it's a really bad fire in uh in the San
Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, and uh, it's it's it's
it's so bad. In fact, we are I don't know,
ten miles removed from the fire. And you can smell
the smoke and see the ash inside the studio. I
don't even know how it smells like and and like, look,
I'm not gonna sit here and say I have the
(00:44):
greatest radio studio on Earth. I don't have the worst.
I've I've doubt I've had better. I've I've had worse
as well. But I will tell you that, like this
is a legit. Like those doors, radio studio doors, television
doors are like the heaviest doors on the planet. They're
supposed to be like almost vacuum sealed. There's hard to
(01:04):
get up. If you have one of those expensive sub
zero refrigerators they're that hard to get open, and that's
behind double thick glass, which is behind other glass, other doors,
and yet the smoke is still getting through. I'm not
complaining to you. I'm just kind of painting the picture
of the fact that I can barely see John Ramos,
I'm smelling smoke, and I'm trying to figure out exactly,
(01:28):
uh if if we're too close to the fire. So
lots of stuff going on. UM, I want to talk
about Steph Curry's injury, talk a little bit about the NB,
a little bit about college hoops. Bad pick for you yesterday.
I have to make it up for you today. I'm
making up to you. Stick with me. UM. Got some
college football thoughts as well. Josh Hypel, the new head
(01:50):
coach at Central Florida, Danny White, the young athletic director
there crushing the world, do another great job, another great higher.
And I want to talk more about the the Giants
as they continued to while in mediocrity. But let's start
with last night's Monday night football game? What did you
(02:13):
expect to see? You know? Last night reminded me frankly
of the Michael Bennett uh mistaken identity short term. UM,
what if that wasn't an arrest detainment it did. It
actually reminded me of Ray Rice hitting jen a Rice
(02:38):
and that video. It reminded me of do you remember
the the guy in Charlotte who got who got shot?
He had a brain injury and he went for his gun.
He got smoked by police and then people rioted because
they had seen only Facebook footage and they hadn't seen
(02:59):
the real footage of exactly what happened. What did you
expect to see? Like Sean McDonough was appalled by the
ferocity of Bengals Steelers. First, let me just for the
record state this, I think Sean mcdonneh is a spectacular
(03:22):
play by playboys spectacular, But one of the things that
he has attempted to do is within his own calling
of the game, shape it based upon his how he
views the narrative. And John Gruden also didn't like some
of it, But a lot of that is you got
(03:43):
to take the lead of your play by play. Oftentimes
people don't like don't like when play by play and
color guy disagree on something, even vociferously. There was some
dirty hits last night. Uh. Two players in fact have
been suspended Vontes Burfett was carted off. Of course, Ryan,
she's here was cut off. Ryan, she's here. I think
(04:05):
we all think is going to be okay. He basically
had what's what amounts to a spinal cord concussion or
a spinal cord stinger. It looked really, really bad. But
last night was great for football. It was, you know why,
because it was football. Football is supposed to be played
(04:27):
passionately with two teams, preferably that don't particularly like each other.
And the Bengals and the Steelers don't like each other.
There's supposed to be some history between the two, and
you know what, there's history, go back two years ago
in the playoffs. It was just as nasty, if not
a nastier game, with even more importance on the line.
I don't like you, you don't like me. And guess what.
(04:47):
We wear helmets, shoulder pads and cups for a reason here, kids,
because we try and hurt each other. We don't really
try and hurt each other, but the physical contact is
so great that occasionally p people get hurt. That's the sport.
What did you expect to see? I look, I was
(05:09):
appalled when ray Rice hit jen a Rice. It was gross,
absolutely disgusting, disgraceful. That's what looks like when a man
hits a woman. Would you expect to see the guy
in Charlotte who got smoked by police? Like I don't
like watching people get shot by police, But when the
(05:31):
cops repeatedly tell you to drop your weapon and you
reach for it and the cops have a pistol pointed
on you, what did you expect to have happened? What
do you expect to have? I mean, I understand that
we operate in this world to which hey, listen, we're
(05:52):
just watching from fantasy football and we just want toe
these guys score touchdowns and then do like they can
do the the you know, duck duck goose, or they
can do hacky sack sack races. They can be something
else like Kevin. That's what That's what football looks like.
What do you expect to see? Now, I'm not disputing
(06:13):
the fact that that was bad for the mom trying
to get up the nerve to sign the permission slip
for their son to play tackle football in the fall.
Like I have an eight year old son, and my
wife saw that hit and she walked up to me
and she was like, ah, excuse me. She's like, heyes,
not playing, Like we already have issues with concussions and
(06:37):
brain injury and and and what these hits can lead to.
And I understand you're trying to like, these concussions are
scary and Jujue Smith Schuster, for anybody who thinks that
he didn't deserve to be suspending, was suspended for one
game by the NFL. Like go back and watch he
launches himself on a defensive player and though he appears
(06:59):
to make contact with his shoulder first, he tries to
make it with his helmet. The same thing happened with
the Bengals defensive back who's suspended as well. One game.
Um I Local was suspended, same thing, launched himself and
this case he actually hit Antonio Brown with his helmet.
(07:22):
They're trying to protect the players from themselves, but they're
trying to protect them from football. This is what football
has always been. It's not for the faint of heart.
It does lead potentially to brain injury. But like I mean,
would you expect it's the Bengals and the Steelers. Have
(07:44):
you not seen them play seen them play each other
in the last decade? They don't like each other. They
hit really hard, and they got Vontes perfect, and they
got some dirty ass players on both teams, and it's awesome.
It's awesome. Here's Marvin Lewis after the game. I think
you mean, Marvins should players police themselves? And the LAE
(08:05):
had all I can do. In terms of specials, I
think the game has changed. You know, I don't know
what played particularly you're referring to. You know, if there's difference, yeah,
that's it's Footballs is a physical sport. Football is a
violent sport. Fitball is a collision sport. And I'm not
(08:26):
going to dispute the fact that some of those hits
were dirty, they went over the line. But football does
in fact police itself, right, Like I thought it was
dirty what Jujuic jujuicemisth Schuster did. But hey, jujuice, Miss
Schuster is gonna have to go over the middle against
the Cincinnati Bengals for the rest of his career. And
(08:48):
while he may have thought he was doing a solid
for Antonio Brown standing over him, Antonio Brown's yelling karma,
Hey guess what fellas? You play the Bengals twice next year?
Twice it's kind of it works, and so I know
we're supposed to we're supposed to be sickened by it,
disgusted by it. But I turned on a football game,
and you know what I saw football game? I saw
(09:11):
a nasty rivalry of two teams that don't like each
other in a division which has been hotly contested in
two teams. One has been a a champion several times
throughout the past fifteen years help throughout the past thirty years.
The other team has had as has had bouts with
(09:31):
uh sub mediocrity and has had some really good years
but unable to climb out of the of the dull
drums of just making the playoffs and losing. Like there're
two different franchises. One has forever felt disrespected, the other
one has seen themselves as regal but tougher than a
two dollar steak, And they went out in the football
(09:52):
What the hell did you expect to see? So I'm
sorry that you might not have liked it, But at
its court, that's what football is kind of about, right.
Wayne Gretzky tried to take fighting out of hockey. Nobody
(10:13):
liked it, nobody watched. Didn't work. Nascar tried to take
crashes out of out of racing. Nobody liked it. People
stop watching. The NFL has tried to take um some
of these egregious hits out of the NFL. But I'm
telling you last night, it's kind of awesome. No, I
(10:37):
would you want your son o there? No, No, would not.
But those are grown men and they made the decision
to play football, and they made the decision to hit
each other with their helmets. It's terrible. It sucks, and
hopefully they'll all get up and be able to remember
where they parked their cars, remember their last names. And
they're little security numbers today. And you may think that's
blood sport, and that's a little bit about what it is.
(11:00):
That's football. I watched a football game. I was entertained,
and of course the Bengals lost in typical Bengals fashion.
Had a big lead, just forgot to tackle Avon Bell
down the sideline, figure out a way to get the
Steelers right in the field goal range, and the Steelers
make a field goal as time expires, and they got
an easier field goal because of course, the Bengals jumped
(11:20):
offsides on a forty three yarder instead turning into a
thirty eight yarder, which is like a shot in the
National Football League. Steelers won, Bengals lost. Bengals hit as
hard as any team I've ever seen the Steelers try
to match that level of intensity. Is it bad for
the future of the game because parents watched Ryan shas
(11:41):
Here lay motionless? Sure, but maybe the first time all
year I thought that's the game that I'm not man
enough to play, and that's what the sport was built around.
Oh that's Mark Schlareth what he thought about that game.
He's played in some of the nastiest, some of the toughest,
some of the most physical games during his time with
(12:03):
the Redskins and the Broncos, winning three Super Bowls. He'll
join us upcoming in moments. But first, how'd you like

breaking in the world of sports, ten minutes, Dan Buyer

(13:28):
the National Football League. Let's let's get the opinion of
a guy who's as well respected in the support of
football as anybody I've ever worked with. Mark Layrath one two,
three Super Bowls, two with the Broncos, one with the
Washington Redskins, covers the NFL. UH for the NFL on
Fox Calls Games. Of course, you see him throughout all
of our studio shows on Fox Sports One, he joins
us Um I offered up my opinions thinking that, like,
(13:50):
I don't like with the some stuff that stepped over line. Absolutely,
But I tuned in thinking I was gonna see Steelers Bengals,
two teams that have a history to teams that have
history of those type of plays. They don't like each other.
It was competitive, it was physical, it was vicious. I
don't know why people are so surprised, but you played
in this league. What was your reaction to Monday Night Football? Well,
(14:14):
I mean exactly what you said. I mean, you knew
it was gonna be You knew those two teams don't
like each other. You know, they have a history, especially
with Vontez perfect And you know, the problem that you
get into is when you start dispensing frontier justice. And
that's what I saw in that game a little bit.
That was one of those situations with the Juju Smith Schuster,
(14:35):
which um, you know, you're trying to lay a dude
out and here's the deal. And I've been in a
bunch of locker rooms, you know. I mean, I grew
up in a locker room and played twelve years in
the NFL. And when you have those situations, when you
have some of those guys that are borderline players, you
talk about it, you know, Wednesday morning meetings. You come
in there and say, hey, man, let's just not let's
(14:56):
not forget that. This is what went down the last
time we played this guy. These are the cheap shots.
And you put a loop of film together on all
the cheap shots that have happened and say, if we
get a chance within the context of the rules, um,
during the course of a play, let's take our shots.
And you know, I mean, I know that they're trying
to cut some of that out of the league. Um,
(15:21):
but those are the things that go on, like it
or not. And it's probably the wrong way to go
about it, but um, I've been in that meeting before.
And you know the problem that you get into is
there's always a few touch guys. I mean, think about
Smith Schuster. He was he was at USC last year,
so he probably just saw the film was like, all right,
I got my shot and I'm gonna take it, and
(15:41):
you know, I'm gonna try to I'm just gonna try
to decapitate a guy, and that that's a I mean,
that part is an issue. Um. But you know, the
Gronkowski thing probably bothers me more than that because it's
not within the context of the game. You know what,
the play is completely over and you go wwe to
(16:01):
the back of a dude's helmet and give him a concussion,
that one probably bothers me more than the ones that
happened in the field of play. Um. So you know,
it's just one of those situations. Doug. Like I, I
like the physicality of football. I will never be mad
about guys when they accidentally go you know, helmet to
helmet or whatever, helmet helmet what okay, hold on, honey, Sorry,
(16:25):
I'm sorry, has my granddaughter? Uh what guys go helmet
to helmet. That's not intentional. You know that that stuff happens, Um.
You know, that's gonna happen in the course of a game.
But when you try to lay dudes out or you
try to you know, decapitated dude, that's when you've got
to call that, you know, call it what it is.
And and I don't mind the suspensions there. Um, I
(16:48):
I thought, like, look, the chaisier thing. I mean, look,
I played football just as a kid, and I remember
being first thing I was taught was see what you hit, right,
And so unfortunately he didn't. He lowered his helmet and
likes to Luckly it appears like he could. He's gonna
be okay. He's got feeling movement in his legs and
they're saying it might be just a spinal concussion. Um. Look,
(17:08):
Steelers record wise it right there and play for home
field advantage throughout the a f C playoffs. But without
Shays here, it's a completely different team, though it is.
That guy is an absolute freak show when it comes
to UH athleticism, the way he flies around and you
know that hit man. That guy is an enforcer. Now,
(17:29):
you know, you've got to be better about like you said,
keep your head up and um and I've seen him
fly around and hit people like that in the past,
so that's gonna be a learning curve for him. But
you're a percent right he is. He is one of
those dudes that can line up in an a gap,
you know, and how all the linebackers nowadays go back
to the Zimmer you know experiment. He's kind of the
(17:51):
guy that gets credited for a lot of that stuff.
But you can walk up in an a gap and
and threatened to blitz, and then you can bust out
all the way across the formation from the from that
opposite a gap to the other side and get underneath
a slant route. You know, that's the kind of athleticism
that guy has. He can blitz, he can cover, Uh,
(18:12):
he does it all. And so he's a guy that,
um to me, is a huge difference maker for that
for that team. So depending upon how long he's out, Um,
if he's out for the rest of the season or
if he's out for a couple of weeks or even
a month, it certainly hurts their defense because you're just
not gonna you're just not going to replace that kind
of athleticism, that kind of speed. And he's a great
(18:33):
football player. Yeah, he's a great football player. March Layers
joining us three times through a Bowl champion Fox NFL
analyst ships passing in the night. The Chargers are now
tied with the Raiders and the Chiefs for first place.
Chiefs were once under the last undefeated team in the
natur Puble League. Now they can't beat the Jets. Um,
is there anything that can save the Chiefs from drowning
(18:54):
this season? And I don't. I don't think so, Doug.
I mean, I think you look at them defensively, you know,
they have never defended the run very well um here
this year anyhow. And secondary, with the injuries they've had,
picked people have picked them apart in their secondary. Too
many mistakes, too many big plays given up in the secondary,
so much so that it went out and signed Darrell
(19:15):
Reevas who have been out forever, you know. So those
are the big issues there and as if they can
play with the leave. But I think what has happened
is they're a team that early in the season people
couldn't get a read on because they give you so
much eye candy with Andy Reid all the motion stuff
and the jet sweep stuff and the shovel past stuff
and formationally, they do such a great job of showing
(19:39):
you a unique looking run, a triple option type of run,
and then having a play action off of that. And
it's so much eye candy that you lose eye discipline
and you're always out of position and that's what happened
earlier in the season. But I think now that people
have you know, the defensive coordinators have seen it over
and over, they've seen what works, to see what doesn't work. Uh,
(20:00):
you know, they start to make those adjustments, and now
guys have better, they've been trained better to to have
better eye discipline and not get fooled by all the
motion and all of a sudden, offensively, they're not putting
up the kind of points they were early. They can't
play with the lead. And when they can't play with
the lead, everything's on the table that that defense has
(20:21):
to defend, and they're just not good enough to do it. Also,
they have some serious issues, some serious a warts that
have been exposed here in the last five weeks. I
think they're like one in six in the last and
the last seven weeks. I mean, it's kind of incredible
what's happened to them. That's a voice of Mark Larrat,
three times Super Bowl champion Fox NFL analysts. Let's go
to the New York Giants. They fired their head coach,
(20:43):
they fire their general manager. Um My thought on this
think was, look, Aim has been been a tremendous quarterback,
but uh, they did, in fact have to take a
look at Davis Webb. There was not a ton of
reward for playing Eli Manning. Owners Hips signed off on it,
the GM signed off ont of the head coach signed
off on the Only one who didn't like it was
(21:04):
Eli Manning. And now he gets his way, he gets
a starting position back. But like, what what exactly is
the point? I don't understand what the Giants are doing
even now? Well I don't. I don't need it. I mean,
if you knew you're gonna high, you knew that you're
gonna fire your head coach and your GM anyhow. And
my whole thing is Eli Manning is is not the
entire year of the problem. It's not like you're like, hey,
(21:26):
we're just one quarterback away from you know, playing well. Yeah,
he hasn't played that well, but he's a guy that
needs to be supported. You know, he can't move, he
can't get out of harm's way. You haven't supported him
with a good offensive line, you haven't supported him with
a running game. He just hasn't happened. You lost both
your receivers. So to me, it was one of those
situations where your owner let a head coach and the
(21:47):
GM that you knew you were gonna get rid of
make a decision to make the organization look bad, and
you signed off on it. I mean, it's like the
it's like the dude, you know, it's like to due
that runs the streets on his wife, you know, I
mean to me, it's like, oh, I was, you know,
and then gets caught and it's like, hey, man, I was.
You know, I'm so sorry, sweet, you know, he's lost
(22:08):
my head for a minute. But now I'm gonna come back.
And here's the you know, the five Carrott diamond ring.
I just I looked at that and like, what were
you doing in the first place? The glass is not greener? Yeah,
I mean, you're gonna fire those guys anyhow. And and
now you made your whole organization look bad because you
took a guy that has been a two time Super
Bowl champion, two time m d P and and you
(22:30):
basically put the blame on him, and like, hey, it's
not us, it's him. He's not any good. And I
just looked at the ownership like, you guys, are you
guys the Mayor family, You're too classy to let that
happen to your franchise. I was just disappointed in them
in general. You signed off on as an owner. That
to me was that That to me is just it's
not okay. Uh. Russell Wilson continues to find a way
(22:53):
to win games in spite of the fact his line
isn't very good, don't run the football well, and the
defense has been decimated in the back end by injuries.
How sustainable is this? Um? Listen, the guy is a
guy is Chris Angel right, I mean he can make
you disappear. That's that's Prussell Wilson. That dude is an illusion.
If he's a he's a freak show. Thirty touchdowns they
(23:14):
have scored twenty nine. He's been associated with I think
twenty six touchdown passes in three rushing touchdowns. Um you,
I mean, come on, dude, I like, if that dude
is not the m v P, put any other quarterback.
Put Carson Wentz in that situation. Put Tom Brady in
that situation. Do you think they are, you know, doing
what Russell Wilson is doing. I mean we're scrambling around
(23:35):
just making I mean, freak show level plays without without
any protection, with no running game. Um right now, I'm
I'm I'm hard pressed to said that. I don't think
I would put him as the number one m VP
candidate if if I'm voting right now, uh, is it sustainable?
If he continues to do things that are freak show level, Yeah,
it's sustainable. And if they start playing that defense like
(23:57):
they played the other night on Sunday night against the
again the Eagles, then yeah, I think it is sustainable. Um,
Eagles have only beaten one team with a winning record.
Does that leaves you to be and considering how they played,
granted on the road in Seattle, they may not play
on the road in the playoffs, but what's your level
of concern based upon uh? One, the level of competition
(24:17):
they played into how they played on Sunday, Well, the
level competition doesn't scare me that much because they've throttled everybody.
UM plan on the road. Here's the thing about that,
and this is just human nature. When you're playing as
good as they played. They lost I think the second
game of the season to the Chiefs, and then they've
gone on this incredible run when you've played that well.
(24:38):
And I know, because you know, I played on a
team that started the season eleven and oh, and I
played on another team to started thirteen and O little
things that little things, you know, you don't you get
to the point where human nature is, you don't sweep
the corners. You know. It's just a little stuff that
you're like, hey, man, we can't afford offside to your
this holy call, and everybody kind of goes, yeah, you
know what, we gotta clean that up. But when you're
(24:58):
winning it and I was like, yeah, we gotta clean
it up. But hey, we're winning and we're crushing people
and we're throttling everybody that we play against, and so
it's almost one of those throwaway comments, Doug. I think
one of these things that happens to you when you lose.
The coaching staff brings you in and takes all those
little things that they said, hey, this is gonna be
(25:20):
a problem at some point, guys, we're gonna clean this up.
We gotta clean this up. And they're able to get
to dust all that film off and give you a
role like here's we told you that this kind of
penalty is gonna hurt us, or this kind of mental
mistake is gonna hurt us, and they can show you,
you know, in week four we talked about this. Here
it is. It showed up in Seattle in week seven?
(25:41):
We talked about this, did we not? And we all
kind of laughed about it. Here it is against Seattle.
It shows up, and this is why we lost that game.
And that's why it's so damn important to be dialed
in at all times. So this is a great teaching tape.
You're on a West coast swing. You're gonna play the
Rams next um in Los Angeles. You can you can
(26:01):
come away with this West Coast Swing road trip one
and one and you can learn a lot about your
football team. So this is a learning opportunity. I'm not
concerned with Philadelphia. They're an outstanding football team. Great stuff stink.
Where are you this weekend? I am in Houston for
San Francisco against the Texas. What have you seen from
(26:22):
Garoppolo on tape so far? Well, so far, I've got
it all download. I haven't even looked at that tape yet,
So I will you know what. I will let you
know exactly what I see the next time we talked.
But here's what. Here's no, here's no, that's okay. I
love your honestly, Here's what. Here's what I want to know. Okay,
I'm gonna ask you next week. You join us up
like Mark Slayer's joining us. This is a true story
and you can attest to it. When Stink was in Washington,
(26:46):
they drafted a first round quarterback and a seventh round
quarterback same year. Correct. Correct. Keath Schuler was the first
round pick, right, and the seventh round pick was Gus Farrott.
I'm gonna say, correct, okay, and Stink on the sideline
went up to one of the offensive coaches and said,
how come the seventh round picks better than the first
round pick? Is that about accurate? Yeah? I saw him practice.
(27:09):
I saw them both practice for the sum total of
about eight snaps apiece. And I said, the seventh rounder,
I told him, Mark my word, the seventh rounder is
gonna be ten times a quarterback the first rounder is.
Just trust me, he's way better. Okay. So all I
wanna know is Canny play and you'll you'll watch him

Dan Buyer, Dan suspensions and the Nashal Football League updated. Yeah,
well you can tell you this. Stewarts writer receiver Jude
you Smith Schuster suspended one game for his hit on
Vante's perfect last night, while Bengal safety George I Loca
he was also suspended one game for his hit on
Antonio Brown. They have an opportunity to appeal, but we'd
(28:13):
be suspended four week fourteen. Mike Tomlin today on the
latest on Ryan Chase here, I really have no update
um in terms of his medical status other than what
was released earlier. I'd imagine at the appropriate time, those
that are are responsible for his care, we'll give you
a reasonable assessment where he is now. The Steelers did
(28:34):
release his statement last night saying that Chase Here did
suffer that back injury and that no surgery would be needed.
An update this morning for me in Rapp report of
the NFL Network said that Chase Here did have feeling
in his lower extremities. Giants quarterback Eli Manning's gonna start
Sunday against the Cowboys. Central Florida's hired. A new head
football coach comes in the form of Josh Hype the
Missouri offits of coordinator. Hypel also coached at Oklahoma and
(28:57):
won a national championship as the Sooner's quarterback in tooth
I got fired by Bob Stops and then often they
got fired. Lincoln Riley was hired to replace him. Kind
of interesting. Yeah, now on his feet to Missouri team
that can score a lot of points this year, um,
even though maybe the the the expectations of other Missouri
teams wasn't there, but they threw the ball a lot
in Columbia, Florida state safety Derwin James is gonna answer
(29:19):
the NFL draft and won't play in the Independence Bowl.
The IOC suspending the Russian Olympic Committee from competing in
the Winter Olympics because of a quote systematic manipulation of
the anti doping rules end quotes. Basically, it's like n
C a ant a probation where they can they can
transfer to any you know, any country they would like
(29:41):
and still compete in the Olympics. So does the hockey
team complete compete under a neutral flag? Is that what
they're gonna do? The athletes that are cleared would be
able to play under the Olympic flag and they would
be known as the Olympic athlete from Russia. So I
don't know if it would be the Olympic hockey team
from Russia, but they wouldn't be the Russia and hockey team.
So maybe it's semantics and bourbage, but that's what you've got.
(30:04):
Why don't they just play for Switzerland their neutral Very good?
Very good? All right, Dan Dan Um, I can bring
that music you would there? By the way, I love
on Sunday. I thought it was really good, amazing. I mean,
I think that they are set for the next ten years.
But I hear here's what I think though, Like again,
like we both love football, watch a bunch of football.
(30:25):
And by the way, you should listen to Dan Buyer's
Um Football show, which is uh super early in the
morning West whatever, it's it's specific, right. So when you
get up on Sunday morning and you go to get coffee,
you're gonna play ball. They're going to take your kids
somewhere like turn on Fox Sports Radio. Uh. Dan gets
you ready for all the NFL games and usually recaps
the college football to night. But now it's just all
(30:47):
looking forward and leads you into we run are the
TV pregame shows we run on radio here on Sunday mornings,
great weekend line up, but Dan highlights it um And
so Dan, you and I love watching football, and have
you know, have have a I think for radio guys
like a high enough level of football like you, I asked, stink,
Because I look that guy. I feel like he just
(31:09):
knows like players know. And I'll be interested to see
what he says. I would guess he'll come back saying
Garoppolo can play, but really interested after he pours over
some tape that's downloaded and watched him in person. What
a guy who's who's played for the champion Redskins and
played with John Elway and two championships with the Denver
bron Because what he says about Garoppolo. But I would
(31:31):
agree with you based upon what I've seen that forty
Niners have their quarterback of the future and to get
him for a second round pick, even if they have
to they have to redo his contract in the offseason, Like,
so what totally worth it? Yeah, And I think that
it's easy to look at his time with the Patriots
and I know that was a limited amount of time,
but you're saying to yourself, Okay, the talent level around
him is is higher, so maybe it can make him
(31:51):
look good. When he was playing against the Bears on Sunday,
and I know that didn't getting the end zonely kicked
five field goals, but he just looked the part. He
didn't seem adults, he seemed calm, He made the right throws.
I just I just thought, yeah, now when you look
at when you look at playing for that team compared
to the Super Bowl champions, quite a difference, but he's
still look good. I'm gonna tell what Jimmy Garoppolo is
(32:13):
You're ready, Yeah, Okay, Now, look, I am happily married,
so this is not does not apply to me. But
I have friends which they're still searching for that certain someone, right,
And I tell them all the exact same thing. Like,
you want a woman who's like above over thirty five,
maybe even over forty, and guys you're like, whoa wait
(32:36):
a second, she might have kids, she might have baggage.
Is like, yeah, guess what, you probably have baggage. You
probably have to still looking okay, But you get a woman,
a woman like my wife, for example, is I'll just
say she's over thirty five. I'm not gonna give her
age out, but she is a woman. She has lived
in different countries, lived in different parts of the country,
(32:57):
she has had children. She is way more interesting now
then she was when we first met. Most women I
know over thirty five are much more interest like every
I don't know if you've ever heard this. Uh. Dan
was single until he's a perpetual bachelor. Uh He dated
a lot of Hollywood starletts until he settled down with Lisa.
Somehow Lisa revealed him in um, but a lot of
(33:18):
guys like my second one, you know, the second wife thing.
You know, add your take your age add five cut
in half, like no way, no thank you, because they're
not and interesting right, They're just not, like I have
no desire to have even conversations with women in their
early twenties. For the most part, it's just hard. Different
generation haven't lived enough, different way of looking at things. Anyway.
(33:41):
My point is that's what the that's what the Niners
have gotten here. Okay, the Niners. You might get a
prettier girl that's twenty one years old, twenty two years old, okay,
and she hasn't had kids, and she doesn't have one
of those called cat tails that with the what are
the wrinkles called that? The women like, they get the
boat tox for some something or other. Crow's feet, that's
(34:03):
a crow's feet. They might have crows feel like so what?
So what? Right? Like you don't look good either, But
they're interesting and they're refined and they've lived through the
good and the bad, so they understand. They understand to
not not. They're not super super emotional like younger men
and women are. It's the same thing with getting a quarterback.
(34:25):
You're the Niners and you get Donald, you get Rosen.
They haven't seen light bullets. You don't know how they're
gonna react to uh an injury, a bad season, a
bad couple of seasons with their leaderships, like how they'll
act when they have money in their pocket, Like whereas Garoppolo,
he might not be the greatest quarterback on Earth. He
may not. He may not be Joe Montana, might not
(34:46):
be Steve Young. But you know what, He's lived in
the league. He's played on championship teams. He's been around
a little bit, been around a bunch of different coordinators.
He's a he's a plus thirty five year old woman,
which to me is way more attractive then a year one.
One are the chances the Broncos fire vance Joseph before
the end of the season. I'll tell you next. Broadcasting

A l joined breaking NEWSS got some breaking news for
(35:34):
us DAN. What is it? The coaching carousel stops in Tallahassee,
where multiple reports say Florida State will name Oregon's Willie
Taggert as these school's new head football coach. Replacing jimbo Fisher. Taggart,
of course, spent just one season at oor Agon. Prior
to that was the head football coach at South Florida.
But he's a Florida native. Going back home, Willie Taggart,
you new head coach at Florida State. I love Dan
(35:54):
Buyers all of a sudden Wisconsin accent that comes out
in the word like Taggart tag the one. All right,
So the question how about or bad luck for Organ
where this job comes open after Chip Kelly And I
don't know if Chip would have gone back to Oregon.
I think he would have um Casey Wasserman of course
(36:16):
of the Washerman Group, a big agent who helped kind
of spearhead him to u c l A. I do
think in terms of living in if you have the
one thing is that U c l as under Armour
as opposed to Nike, and his relationship with Phil Knight
and the history with Organ, although Organ is a much
tougher place to recruit to. All of that is interesting,
but Organ is now open. And oh yeah, by the way,
(36:37):
for Oregon, they're the other potential head coach that they
would would have loved to have gotten is Scott Frost
who was their offensive coordinator when they played for national championship.
H when it when excuse me, when Chip was there.
And now Scott Frost the head coach in Nebraska. So
organ is gonna have to find yet another option to
be their head coach. But that is huge, dudes. With that,
(36:59):
let's get to a game. This is game time on
the Doug gott Leaves Show today, we have got what
are the chances? All right? Well, Giants quarterback Eli Manning
will start in Sunday's game against the Cowboys, according to
the NFL Network. Doug, what are the chances that Eli
(37:19):
starts every game for the Giants for the rest of
the season. Uh, I would say, I think they're still
going to execute the same plan and at Davis Webbill start.
The three K is over, so it doesn't matter now
Davis Webbill started at least the sixteenth game of the season.
After being crushed by the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, the
(37:41):
Broncos have now lost eight straight. Heck, Football Outsiders reports
that the Broncos actually great out as the worst team
in the NFL. So, Doug, what are the chances that
Brocco's head coach Bands Joseph doesn't make it out of
this season. Um, I'm gonna say fifty seven percent greater
than fifty fifty that vance Joseph doesn't see year two?
(38:02):
Did you do that because Tom Jackson? Or fifty seven
for the Broncos? I did? That's exactly. I miss seeing
Tom Jackson on ESPN. By the way, I like Tom
j t J was always was, always just a good
reasonable human being. Chargers Corner, Casey Hayward's old Sirius Sex
m NFL Radio that Josh Gordon of the Browns was
his toughest cover this year. That includes Odell Beckham Jr.
(38:22):
Dez Bryant, Brandon Cooks, Tyreek Kill. I could go on
and on, but what are the chances, Doug that Josh
Gordon returns to his Pro Bowl level of play? I'd
say sixty five better than Look, he's first, always got
fresh legs, right, hadn't played like three years, Hes got
fresh legs. But Josh Gordon's just nobody's ever argued the town.
It has been Can he stay off? Can he stay off? Drugs?
(38:43):
And uh, I think if he's made it this far,
he's been off drugs long enough considering how much they're
tested when they're in the program, I think there's a
greater possibility that happens that it doesn't. He's still young
enough to not have reached his prime chance he reaches
pro Pro Bowl form. I thought you were gonna say
four D. And with the reports the school is targeting
(39:04):
Georgia defensive coordinator Melt Tucker or Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele,
what are the chances that Tennessee actually has a head
football coach by the end of the week. Kevin Steele
was once the head coach at Baylor, right Kevin Steele?
When at Baylor, UH had the worst first game disaster
in modern football history. Okay, they were playing you and
(39:28):
l V. They were up I think five points. They
have five points. All they had to do was take
a knee. Clock was right now, and instead they tried
to stamp it and UH and score a touchdown. The
running back fumbled at like the one ft line. UNLV
picked it up, ran it back, won the game. Baylor
never recovered. Kevin Steele eventually lost his job. It would
(39:50):
be a show. What are the chances they have a
head coach by win end of the week because the
remember you of the early signing period here in December,
you gotta get gotta get somebody in place. U has
taken them long enough. UM Spurs forward Kawai Leonard spoke
to reporters today said he feels healthy and should come
back soon. So what are the chances that Kauai actually
makes his season debut before Christmas Day? Before Christmas Day? Yes,
(40:13):
we're about twenty days out. Six chance. I think Christmas
Day is is or after. It's more likely. Rush Finally,
Doug with Kobe Bryant's animated short Dear Basketball shortlisted for
an oscar. What are the chances that Kobe in his
lifetime adds an Academy award to his NBA titles? And
(40:35):
m v p s m hmm five percent chance five.
This is game time on The Duck Godly Show. We've
talked about the Giants. We'll talk some more about that.
We've talked about college wall playoff talks some more about that.
We haven't talked about Steph Curry's ankle. We'll talk to
(40:56):
him about that. Talking about last night's football game, the
suspensions that Paul will talks more about that. UM the
possibility of Aaron Rodgers returning on what that could mean
to the playoff picture. But um, a huge story in
sports which is imminent from breaking is not really talked about,
(41:16):
And the truth is, it doesn't make any sense to me,
but it's likely going to happen. Tell you what that
is upcoming next in the Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio.
What up It's Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Mm hmmm.
(41:38):
Willie Taggart's new head coach of Florida State. Pretty cool,
pretty cool dude from Florida recruiting Florida. Of course, played
at West Kentucky quarterback in West Kentucky. But that wouldn't
that would make sense to me, makes a ton of
sense to me. Be interesting to see the dynamic between
he and um uh Dan Mullen who is now going
(42:01):
to recruit at Florida. And of course you have Mark
Rick who's at Miami. Seems like they're trying to build
an offense that the wall that Trump wanted to build.
Seems like those Florida schools are trying to build keep
people out from recruiting the Sunshine State. Anyway, there's lots
of stories in sports which are interesting, and Kwan Bolden
(42:22):
is going to join us upcoming in like twenty minutes. Quan,
of course we're retired from the NFL. Wanted to help
pursue um the advancement of some social justice reform, right.
I want to ask him about this supposed split between
some of the players in regards to the money the
(42:43):
NFL is going to put towards social justice issues. And
I want to ask him about the Juju Smith Schuster
block last night, some of that the Gronk hit as well,
and like, look at somebody who's a respected former player,
where is the line? Where is the line? Because if
your argument is your argument is, hey, Vontes perfect had
(43:07):
it coming to him. I can't really argue with that.
I can't, but I love it when it's hypocritical right
to say do as I say, not as I do
now in the in the Golden rule, something that applies
to every sport. If you're bothered by Vontes berfex cheap shots,
(43:34):
shouldn't you also be bothered by what jud Smith Schuster did.
I don't know. I'll ask you and Kwan bold who's
gonna join us upcoming in now fifteen minutes? Dog got
the show Fox Sports Trade eight seven. Sex is the
phone number. UM. I feel like this is a huge
story which is not being discussed at all. Derek Jeter
(43:59):
is coming into Miami. Marlins is partial owner, and he
is cleaning house. He stupidly got rid of my boy,
Rich Walts, who's just an outstanding play by play voice,
but not his guy. I don't know why a play
by play voice should be changed. That makes no sense
to me. That makes absolutely no sense, like, uh, voice
(44:23):
of a team, that's a relationship which is built. And
while you might get something like I want my guy,
like he's never been disloyal and he speaks. The Miami
fans are used to him, and he's more than companies
excellent at his job, Like what are you doing? The
sad thing was he didn't even get one of those
(44:44):
parting gift bags away. All of Derek Jeter's one night
stands got those giftbacks. I can't believe at least send
him a Yeah Jeets gift bag if you're going to
fire the dude anyway. But they're trying to clean house
with the roster as well, which is kind of part
for the course with even previous Miami Marlin's ownership back
when they were the Florida Marlins. You're good, Anny, cleanhouse,
(45:07):
you start over? You good, you clean house to start over.
John Carlos Stanton had a remarkable season. John Carlos Stanton
is entering his prime as a baseball player. He's also
entering the prime of a backloaded contract which would pay
him two hundred and ninety five million dollars in the
last you know, couple of years of it. That's five
years of it. It's a sick deal. It's a pro
(45:29):
John Carlos Stanton deal, and it's one to which he
has a no trade clause that he can take off
or keep on for whatever team he'd like. We're still
waiting to find out if you'll take it off for
the Cardinals and the San Francisco Giants, two teams that
have offered reportedly the best deals for Stanton. But I
guess my question is this, with the John Carlos Stanton
(45:52):
trade being imminent, why in the hell would you go
to San Francisco? Why would you go San Francisco sucked
last year? And if you want to tell me that, yeah,
Madison bum Gardener was hurt and he's not usually hurt. Okay,
I won't tell me that Johnny Quado had a down
year for the first time, and like, okay, but like dude,
pitchers lose it really really quickly. They still need a
(46:16):
third baseman, they'd still need a center fielder, they still
need help in their bullpen. And last I checked, they're
still in the same division with the Dodgers, who are better,
who are better? And the Rockies and the Diamondbacks. And
oh yeah, by the way, if you're John Carlos Stanton,
like you do know that San Francisco is a terrible
(46:36):
place to hit home runs if you're right handed. Like
it is designed basically, it is designed for old school baseball,
with the exception of a short right field porch because
it was built when they had Barry Bonds huge outfield.
So I feel like this is one of those destined
(46:59):
to fail moves. And then the St. Louis Cardinals are
invested and involved and willing to pick up two two,
And I thought the Cardinals come out looking so smart
because they never really changed their offer for our pool
holes and pool holes is aging badly with the uh
with the Angels is a terrible deal. They're gonna sign
(47:23):
up for standing for terrible deal. I don't I don't
get it. I don't get it. Almost do you get it? No,
I do not. I don't know why he'd want to
go to San Fancisco and St. Louis is a very
good organization. But you're right, they got r at a
pool host that you would think they're on the right track,
(47:43):
and then they go sign a guy. But though he's
a little younger right than Pools was when he signed
that wrong contract. So but it is interesting. I just
think it's all bargaining. I think Santon is not going
anywhere right now. I think he's just sitting there trying
to see who's gonna do what, and he wants to
go to Dodgers. I don't know whether the Dodgers stay
real low and the situation saying underground, but I think
they'll pop out in the end. It's the worst home
(48:04):
run park in baseball. Okay, all you have to do
is go to MLB Park Factors. Okay, MLB Park Factors
and they have all of the different stats it is.
It has the lowest home run rate in baseball, and
last I checked, he has a prodigious home run hitter.
(48:26):
What are you doing. It is designed to keep right
hand hitting inside the ballpark. He is a right hand
hitter who his number one strength is hitting the ball
outside of the ballpark. That makes no sense. It's the
rival of his hometown team. It's not the best or
even the second best roster in the division. And uh,
(48:50):
they're gonna have to get rid of their number one
prospect just to acquire him. Like, none of this seems
like a good idea. Tell me what I'm missing music? Well,
so is it more about what you have to give
up to get Stanton in return for just the one
player in addition to how expensive he is? Like, is
(49:11):
this more about it? Both they gotta give up You
gotta give up prospects and you gotta give up money.
So so this says more about the actual cost of
the contract is nowhere near what you get in return
for the amount of prospects. Uh wait, wait, because you're
only gonna get one player for all of those prospects
and it's gonna cost you an armoral leg in a
(49:32):
bad entering his prime. Okay, he's twenty and and the
truth is truth about John Carlos Stanton is like he
had a great year this year, two years ago. I
don't know if you guys remember two years ago. Um,
he was having a better year he hit, or maybe
it was three years ago whatever, Yeah, I think it
was two years ago. He had thirty seven home runs.
(49:54):
But when did he break his face? Brokey, he got hit.
He was gonna be the m v P. He was
leading baseball and essentially statistical offensive category and he broke
his face. And for whatever reason, people are like, oh, well,
I gotta take him out the the m v P. Bowing,
I'm just stupid to me, Um, his war two years
ago was two full seasons ago, So that's three years ago.
I guess three seasons ago to yet whatever was six
(50:16):
point five? Crazy number? Um, So do you think the
Marlins need to drop their asking price or are they
doing the right thing because teams are clearly biting on it. No,
I look, I I think he holds the power. The
Marlins can ask for and get whatever offers they want return,
but he doesn't have to wave his no trade clause
(50:37):
for the Giants. If I'm standing, I'm like, look, dude,
I want to go to the Yankees. I want to
go to the Dodgers. You know, maybe the Angels. But
Why would you want to stay in Miami when it's
pretty clear I do you want to stay in Miami?
But like if he holds all the cards, but why
would you want to leave? You're on last place team
with new ownership. You're like, and our best picture died
(50:58):
last year in the off Seaason right, like, is bad?
You want to get a town, But I'm like, just
I'm not gonna leave. Just to leave, might go to
San Francisco. We'res gonna kill my home run totals? Oh
to do that? Listen? Winning that especially baseball, Baseball change
basically become home run, strikeout, walk, That's all it is now, right.
I just think those somewhere has got to go to
a Supposedly Boston. Boston was on the list. How Boston's
(51:20):
off is Like, can you imagine the numbers you put
up in Boston? I just think they'd just be just
hitting off the water, off the walk, off the walk.
He'd leave the world in doubles. But if you're standing,
it sort of becomes that situation where you can't really
do the negotiating because what are you gonna do? Whatever
team you go to is gonna have to give up
At King's ransom. So then you're going to a team
that has not necessarily I can't imagine. I mean, I
(51:41):
guess if they want that, they want that set, they
want they want a little bit, but they want their
cake that the Marlins want their cake and eat it too.
They want somebody take the contract. But look, you can
ask for whatever the hell you want. Let me have
to give it to him. If I'm standing, I'm like, look,
Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, Angels, deal deal with those teams. Yeah,
I don't want anything else. He's from southern California, he's
(52:03):
from the Valley. It's close to the Dodger Stadium. They
have a great team. The Angels have Mike Trout. If
you add him and you don't have to get rid
of you, I don't know if you saw they picked
up one of the best prospects in baseball from the Braves,
seventeen year old shortstop. Everybody's plucking all the break because
again there's another story that haven't been discussed, like the
Braves lost twelve prospects, like the think the Braves got
(52:25):
basically smu death penalty short of probe probation from Major
League Baseball, Like two weeks ago. Nobody talked about it
because nobody seems to care about it. But it's a
crazy story in baseball. My point is, like you're John
Carlos Stanton, like, dude, don't do it. Don't give me this. Well,
you know, the Giants are always in the playoffs, Like yeah,
but that was before the Dodgers woke up and decided
(52:45):
to be the best franchise and suport. That was before
the Diamondbacks figured things out. Oh, Rockies are good, Like
I don't love it. I don't even like it. And
if you're a right hand home run hitter, why would
you go to the worst park in base ball for
right hand home run hitters? Oh yeah, by the way,
they're the arch rival of your hometown team. And trust
(53:08):
me when I said like people will say like l A,
sports fans are apathetic, and they are. There are no
real rivalries, Like we don't really care. There is one
organization that we all despise, the San Francisco Giants. I
don't know what it is. It's like a real rivalry
and baseball it's like, no, thanks, not a big fan.
(53:29):
And of course there's the terrible history between the fake
Dodger fans that beat up what's the guy's name was?
It was awful anyway, I'm just surprised by it. That's
just one of like one of those things you're like,
no thanks, giants are interestedt no thanks. It's like when
I was growing up, Like I didn't have anything against
USC basketball per se, but my brother and sister were
(53:50):
u c l A l ms. We had USC u
c l A season tickets. My sister was a u
c l A cheerleader and USC basketballs. I was like
playing the playing the sports arena half full, like they
offered me a scholarship, like never really, no thanks. Yeah,
it was like the Coopers for a long time. No,
(54:11):
like yeah, mm hmm, by am I missing something on
the steel? Why are you know baseball way better than
I do? I don't know. John may know it better
than all of us. Um. I think that you are
correct in the essence that in the end, he is
the one that holds all of the power, and the
(54:32):
Marlins can can try to threaten him with a bad
team all that they want, but if he doesn't want
to go to San Francisco, he shouldn't go. Yeah, And
I don't know why she want to go to San Francisco.
Just tell him, hey, here's the teams, and they go like,
what about no, no, no no, here's the teams. What
about no no, no, no no no, here's the teams.
Here's you guys figured out. I'll give you four. Maybe,
(54:54):
maybe I'll give you five. I'll give you one more team.
I just don't think the giants of the One Vision

breaking news for you on Willie Taggert leaving or gonna
after one year going to Florida State. Why is that important? Ramas,
Why do you think that's important? I guess they need
(57:10):
to they need a coach quick due to the signing
coming up. Who's on hold force and Kwan Bolden Florida
State ah and Kwan Bolden, Florida State alum as well
as like a lifetimer as a pro bowler in the
National Football League joins this. Kwana, Willie Taggart, Uh, South
(57:33):
Florida dude coming back to Florida to coach your alma mater.
Do you approve? Yeah? I think he has great time
to the South Florida area. I think he'll do a
great job recruiting that area as well. Um, so yeah,
thank you so good. Yeah. I mean, like it's gonna
be gonna be super fast. It's gonna be fast. And
(57:53):
it's also your old motor hiring the first ever African
American head football coach. Like that's breaking through these kind
of glass ceilings which has previously exists. And um, I
know you know Florida's had an African American head coach.
Obviously Miami did with Randy Shannon. By the way, Randy
Shand's gonna be defense according at UCF, I think there's
there's some symbolism to the symbolism in a higher which
everybody nods as yeah, right, guy to get the job,
(58:13):
and oh yeah, by the way, he happens to be
African American. Is that fair? Yeah? I think so. Hopefully
his span at Florida State will do a lot better
gam how the other ones went, especially with Randy Shannon
down in Miami. So I think everybody's excited in Tallahassee.
I think we're looking forward to the upcoming season. All right,
let me ask you about last night. To those of
(58:35):
us watching at home, that was a violent game, But
like look, I've seen Steelers Bengals in the playoffs two
years ago. It was equally violent, equally physical. Some of
those shots appeared to be cheap. As a former player
and a really good one. What's your reaction to the
hits we saw last night? Uh one that the hit
(58:58):
uh ju ju um had on on perfect. Honestly, I
had no problem with the hit, it was the actions
after the hit. Um. I thought it was a good block,
but I don't think it's necessary to stand over guy
and to taught him after I mean pretty much a
now leaving a guy Um the hit and the end zone,
(59:20):
I felt like it was a guy trying to separate
the receiver from the ball. Um and it's tough. I mean,
guys go out there flying around um and it's it's
kind of tough to position your body in a way
where you keep yourself out of harm's way and the player.
So honestly, I don't have a problem with the hits,
(59:40):
like I said, Um, for me, it was the action
afterwards on the hit on Birthday. Well, he got a
game for it, so too did Rob Gronkowski. He got
a game. Gronx was after the play, Gronk jumped, Uh,
he jumped on White um and and he ended up
concussing White and he used that that four protector looked
(01:00:01):
like to hit him in the back of the head. Uh.
Do you feel like Grons was more Egregio should have
been suspended more or do you think it's equal to
what Juju Smith Schuster did. I definitely think it was
more more greekous Um. The thing about Juju's hit was
it was a football play. I mean, you have his
running back, Um, trying to get yards. He wants to
(01:00:24):
throw a big block to string him. So that's the
football play. Like I said, I don't agree with what
happened afterwards, but Groun, I mean that that had nothing
to do with football. That in itself was a guy
being frustrated. The guy intercepted the ball. He's clearly out
of bounds. Um. You can see the frustration on Grunt
(01:00:44):
as he winds up to alpboard guy in the back
of the head. I mean, it could have been a
lot worse than what it was. Um. So I definitely
don't agree with the one game suspension. I thought it
should have been, uh honestly two or three games. And
claud Bolden joining us on the Doug Gotlib Show here
on Fox Sports Radio. All right, Um, look, one of
(01:01:06):
the main reason you left the NFL this year, you
came on our show and you talked about how passionate
you are about change uh in some of the in
some police policies, in uh in, in how we view
social justice, and you want to be a part of
the process of evolution in relationships between police officers and
the public, between athletes and their fans and the owners.
(01:01:30):
And this has been something you're you're passion enough to
walk away from the game you love. Now we hear
stories about the coalition, uh that that was formed with
these with NFL players and the money which is being
distributed from the National Football League to social social justice causes.
Give me your sense of what's really going on, not
what's being reported in the media. Well, my sense of
(01:01:53):
what's going on is number one, I applied the NFL
for stepping up for the point, I think you have
a situation where, um, I don't know if this has
ever been done um in our country before, where you
had players of a league voice their concerns, the commissioner
gives them a seet at the table and acts, how
(01:02:14):
can we help you as a league, And then they
began to work together to come up with a plan
to where the NFL put resources behind the players and
the causes that they're passionate about. So number one, like
I said, I apply Commissioner good Deil and the NFL
(01:02:34):
for listening, listening to what's players and responding in a
like manner. So what about the idea or the story
that's been reported that there's a split, there's a rift
among the players that some that have not not been
is involved in the process feel like the money is
going Uh, the money is going to places only the
(01:02:56):
guys who are actually involved in the process. You know
where Malcolm jink And says it goes, That's where the
money goes. Is there a rift in between the players
in their own coal coalition? H Well, I would say this, UM.
You know, whenever you have discussions of this magnet sude,
it's not gonna always be God's l on the same page.
(01:03:19):
I think the one thing that is UM encouraging for
me is that no matter how do you see the situation,
everybody has the same common goal in mind, and that's
to see our criminal justice UH system reformed. How we
get there? I think gods have a difference of opinions,
(01:03:39):
which is fine, UM, as long as we continue to
work towards the solutions UM, I think is the main goal.
The part about only certain guys having to say UM,
I would say outright, that's not true. UM. In the coalition,
everybody was given a void. Everybody was acted UM their opinions, UM.
(01:04:05):
If they were good on the decisions that we were making.
Is there anything that guys were willing to do different
or wanted to do different? So the transparency was UM,
it was out there for everybody. UM. Anybody who wanted
to join the coalition could have UM. Guys who felt
(01:04:26):
differently and wanted to go another way. UM, they were told,
you know, we you're more than welcome to do that,
and we will support you in in doing that. Our
main goal as the coalition is to see the needle
get moved, and I think we'll continue to work towards
their going. And Kwan Boldi has got his own foundation,
(01:04:48):
by the way, gave away turkeys in his hometown of
h in his home area in Florida. Of course he
joins us. He's part of the Player's Coalition helping UH
to lead for criminal justice reform. Kind of to spend
some time with the former pro bowler here joining us.
Three time proboil are joining us on the Doug Gotlip
Show on Fox Sports Radio. UH. The other area of
discussion again, this is how we get our news, you know,
(01:05:09):
from other people in the media, is UH, is this
new money being spent by the owners or money from
other causes which is now being sprinkled in uh to
social justice causes. UM should that matter to us where
the money comes from? Uh? You know, for me if
(01:05:29):
I'm fortunate, because I think this moment is something that
should be celebrated. Like I said, this is something that
has never happened before. UM, no other league nor other
entity has listened to his players and responded in the
manner that the NFL has. I think there's a lot
of people around the world, UM who works for different employees,
(01:05:53):
and they make their their concerns known. But I don't
know any entity that has responded to it the NFL has.
Even in our country. You look at the NBA, W
n B, A, MLB, you look at ANTI double A.
None of those leagues have stepped up to the plate
the way that the NFL has. And as opposed to
(01:06:15):
celebrating this moment and everybody working together to try to
improve our country, we have people that are trying to
tell this moment down. The NFL came out itself and said,
this is not an initiative that is replacing some of
the initiatives that were already in place. So no one's
(01:06:37):
not replacing breast cancer. Well this month, no one's not
replacing salute to servants. This is in addition to those
programs that are already in place. Yeah, in addition to
not in lieu of it's really really it's it's very
very important and it should. So look, I take him
(01:06:59):
from your voice, you're actually impressed by the commissioner and
by the fact that he's taken this seriously and and
help push this thing through. Does that does that quell
in your mind again? And like, look, dude, your your name,
your name, your word carries a lot of weight. Uh,
not just because you want to Super Bowl, because you're
a pro bowler, because you're the you know, Walter Payton
Man of the Year award winner, and this is this
(01:07:20):
is kind of your cause. Does that take a lot
of the kind of negative feelings from current players about
the commissioner away? Well? I mean, for me, I don't
I don't know how God's still about the commissioner. But
I'm sure if you go around the league, I'm sure
guys have. UM there are issues with the league. UM.
(01:07:41):
I certainly did when I played. You know, there's things
that I didn't like that would happen with the league.
There's some things that I agree with, UM, But on
this particular subject. Like I said, I would have to
tip my hat to the commission because number one that
he didn't have to give the players as at the table.
(01:08:02):
I don't think any of the commissioner has done that.
You don't think he did. I mean it was it
was spiraling, Quan. I mean, like, look, this was a
huge story. Obviously the president kind of honestly seemed to
fortify the league and the players together. Like I kind
of feel like he was forced because it became such
a big because so many players became involved. So you
(01:08:22):
guys became galvanized um against a lot of the a
lot of a lot of social social justice issues. But see,
I think I think people get it mixed up. The
original intent of milling. What's different than the intent of milling.
(01:08:45):
When Trump came out and made a fate man, That's
when you saw a majority of the NFL meal, That's
when you saw owners locking arms with players. Is when
the President came out and called players f O B
s for milling. That had nothing to do with the
original intent of Guy's milling, of taking the New York protesting,
(01:09:09):
no question, no question, had nothing to do with it.
But the fact was that because it became such a
big outpouring of anti Trump emotion, it really forced it
forced the conversation to be had that might not have
been had otherwise. No, I think the conversation about race
(01:09:31):
and inequality started when Kaepernick started milling. That was last year, right.
You had players around the league who joined in in
the protests, but that protest grew league wise when the
president came out and made the statement that he was making.
My point is the commissioner didn't have to give the
(01:09:54):
players to see at the table only for him. His
only job was to rid the NFL of protests at
some point in time. If he felt like it was
hurting the ratings, if it felt like it was damaging
to the NFL, he could have found a way to
(01:10:15):
do that minus the players. So he didn't necessarily have
to give the players to see at the table. When
I first came into the league, the players didn't have
that platform. We stayed in the locker room when there
was time for the national anthem. So that's an easy
solution that the NFL could have went back to in
(01:10:37):
order to prevent guys from protesting. But like I said,
it wasn't necessarily his job to give players to see
at the table. But he did that last thing one. Um, look, man,
I know the first year has got to be the hardest.
You walked away from the Bills and this has been
(01:10:58):
a huge part of your life. But I can't think
you're not watching thinking I still got gas in the
tank and the desire to come back and play a
little bit more. Well, I think for me, Um, do
I think I can still play football? Yes? I think
the thing that had kept me saying is I found
(01:11:22):
something outside of football that gave me gratification, and that's
helping other people. I think if I had just been
sitting on my couch doing nothing, um watching NFL games,
I'd probably go crazy. But for me, I'm doing something
that more important than playing football, and I think that's
(01:11:44):
the thing that has kept me um focus and level.
Hey man, listen, love having you on. He's an advocate, humanitarian, philanthropist.
Of course, he's retired Walter Payton Man of the Year
award winner and Super Bowl champion. To vote, He's an
Kuan Bold and giving us his on all things football.
Kuant thanks so much for spending some time with this
appreciates being our guest on Fox Sports Radio. It's an
(01:12:07):
Kuan Bold, who was once a great player at Florida State.
They have named a new head football coach. Let's get
to Dan Buyer. In case you didn't know who it was, Dan,
go ahead, Yes, it's Willie Taggart, who spent a year
at Oregon and prior to that was the head coach
at the University of South Florida. Taggart is a Florida native,
so he goes back to his home state after just
one season with the Ducks. A Now there are other
(01:12:27):
coaching vacancies. There won't be one in Memphis. That's because
ed coach Mike Norvell's signdy contract extension with the school.
Will Central Florida filled their vacancy, hiring Missouri offensive coordinator
Josh Hypel as their new head coach. We have a
bit of an update on Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier. Doctor
has released a statement who are attending to him in Cincinnati,
saying that she's here, has undergone a series of tests
(01:12:49):
to evaluate his spine injury, and he'll continue to be
monitored and have more tests over the next forty eight hours.
They say at that time it's expected that she's here
will be transferred to a hospital in Pittsburgh. The statement
today did not give an update on shas Ear's condition
or his status. There was a report earlier today from
the NFL Networks Ian Rappaport that shas Here did have
(01:13:11):
feeling in his lower extremities, but still waiting on more
of what is happening with Ryan Shazier from his condition
wise is that information has yet to be released. Steelers
wide receiver Juju Smith Schuster and Bengel safety George I. Loco,
where he suspended one game for separate hits and last
night's Monday night affair in Cincinnati, while Giants quarterback Eli
Manning will start Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys. Warriors guard
(01:13:32):
Steph Curry already been ruled out of Wednesday's game against
the Hornets. He suffered a sprained ankle dog last night
in the game against the Pelican. So it's homecoming to
Charlotte this year won't be as much of a good
one because he's not going to play. I saw this
story from Newsweek Vice President Mike Pence reportorly Uh snitched
on his five Gamma Delta fraternity brothers for having a

keg at a party on his college campus, Dry college campus,
and he got the entire house in trouble. Pencil was
a sophomore at Hanover College. He alerted the dean that
his brothers were violating the Presbyterian Schools non alcohol policy.
Former fraternity brother Dan Murphy told The Atlantic in a

was locked down. They raked us over the coals. Come on,
he was that guy, that guy. How can you be
that guy? He's that guy? You know that guy? Don't
she music? I think everybody knows that guy. Hey, that guy.
(01:14:38):
They're that guy. Hey, I can't believe you guys are
having beer. It's dry campus. How are we doing. Who's
the most talented big man in the NBA right now?

anyway we play for you a portion show it's calling
(01:16:05):
former Sons head coach and seventeen year pro and then
NBA Earl Watson was on Undisputed with Skip Shannon Joy.
He had this to say about the Kevin Durant Boogie
Cousins dust up and what he thinks of Bookie. Katie
is a great person, extremely great person. High talented players
(01:16:25):
seven foot I don't care what he says. He's seven
ft tall, making plays with the basketball, crossover between the legs,
pull up threes, transition, he catches at a half court,
one or two dribles. He's in the rim. Katie needs
an enforcer. Last season they have Matt Bourns just for
that reason. Draymond Green cannot continue to be that person
because if he is, they need Draymond. So who's their enforcer?
(01:16:49):
Who is it? Boogie Cousins is going to go at you.
Boogie Cousins to me is the most talented big man
in the NBA by far. It's not even close. And
Beat is right there with him, probably potentially will pass him.
But Boogie has the game down. He can do everything
on the court. Boogie goes at your heart. It's some
people that compete against you and then some people that
competes against your soul. He goes at your soul. Yeah. Look,
(01:17:17):
I think he's maybe the most talented offensive player. He
Joel and Beat is in that conversation as well. Carl
Towns is probably a slight notch below, but in that
conversation as well. Uh, the big issue with Boogie Cousins
is can you win with him? Will he take good shots?
Will he play defense? Will he take coaching? Does he
(01:17:37):
want to help lead be a part of the solution,
And to this point, we don't. We don't have a
positive answer on that. So in terms of talent, I
can't argue with somebody who coached in the NBA. Albeit,
I will point out that I think Earl wants to
get back into the NBA. He doesn't want to get
go into college per se um. But you look at
(01:18:00):
New Orleans Pelicans, who have even the record out at
twelve and twelve. Right now, they'd be in the playoffs
ahead of the Oaklahoma City Thunder. I would expect that
to change. But there is something interesting to have two
quas I've thought of superstars and not be a playoff team.
You know, Uh, that would be alarming. They've lost four
(01:18:20):
of their last five games and now they have the
Nuggets up coming at home tomorrow night. Do I think
he's the most talented big guy in the NBA offensively? Sure? Sure?
Right there? I think em Bead has more potential because
he moves better and shoots the ball better and has
more fluidity in his hips, but Cousins is a more refined,
(01:18:41):
better product right now. The differences. Everybody seems to want
to play with Joel Embiid and you can't say the same,
and coach Joel Embiad and he can't say the same
for for Boogie Cousins. Uh Russell Wilson had this to
say on the Herd in regards to uh he was
(01:19:02):
Colin was talking about Tom Brady and UM and Tom
Brady only and Kal Russell had this to say about
conversations he had with Tom Brady. Speaking of Tom, I
had a great conversation with him and just talking to
him about his longevity and everything else. Because I love
great players, and I love getting a no him and
everything else and what they've done. I'm very passionate about
trying to be one of the best in the world.
(01:19:23):
And I hired a full time trainer and it goes
me everywhere. I have a full time PT though she's
full time now, and so I get to work on
my shoulder, my body and my leg constantly getting work
done and everything else, and so I think that's something
that I'm definitely have invested in and something that really
really matters, because the reality is I want to play
the forty five. I want to play and win multiple
Super Bowls. Um, you guys liked the Russell Wilson thing.
(01:19:48):
I like him the player. I just God, the interviews
are canned, aren't they. I'm not the only one who
thinks that music. Do you think that? Or do you do?
You take him at face value? I think it's pretty
clear that he does everything in its power to create
a great image of himself in the public eye. Yeah, yeah,
which I look, I you know, I don't. I personally
(01:20:10):
don't have a problem with it because I understand he
understands what his job is as the starting quarterback in
the NFL and what that means to be the face
of a franchise, and the endorsements. Like because I tend
to be harsh on players like Baker Mayfield and we
talked about the crotch crab, I'm like, it's just a
bad look. It's just not a smart thing to do.
(01:20:30):
So if I think that way, I feel like I
also have to then give credit to quarterbacks who do
do it the right way. Yeah. No, look, I um,
I tend to agree with you, like we have to
look at what if what if the opposite was true? Right? Well,
the opposite was true, Like I can't Is he a
(01:20:50):
bit of a phony? And does he? Does he make
it and try and make everything into roses and heart
you know, dot his eyes with hearts? Sure? Right, like
nothing nothing is as good as he likes to gleam
it to be. But if the worst thing you do
is try and create some fictitious world to which everything
is great and everything is awesome and everything is positive
(01:21:12):
and you're not robbing anybody, not beating anybody, uh, you're
not harming anyone else on earth, then I can't tell
you that I don't like the guy. You just wouldn't
be one of my dudes that i'd hang out with. Like,
I like guys that are guys, even if I totally
respect the football player that is Russell Wilson. That's what

(01:24:31):
want to take a swing at their music? I don't
have a clue. Well you could take a gas comedian
and a good one mm man Gallagher. Yeah, there you go.
Doesn't know who Gallagher? He has again, I said a
good one. I have no idea. I'm trying to complete play.
(01:24:53):
I put a good but good one and you start
with you start with Dane Cook? Do you even know
who Gallagher is? By the way, no idea. Gallagher is
the one with he's known for. He's known for one thing,
dan byro what's he known for? Smashing Watermelonsmelon? Watermelons? Dane
Cook is known for stealing other people's bits and then
telling personal stories they aren't really funny into their Well.
(01:25:13):
Remember Gallagher did have a brother who tried to impersonate
him as a fake Gallagher. So they both have drama
in their lives. They do both have drama in their lives. Uh,
dan By, would you like to take a swing? And
who's performing at the forum? Kevin Hart? Uh? No, funnier
funnier than Kevin Hart? Also black Chris Rock? Um, maybe
(01:25:34):
not at uh, Dave Chappelle, Dave Chappelle. Okay, but I'm
telling you I think this, Uh, I really think this
Raiders Chargers game is gonna get flexed that night. People like, no, no, no, no, no,
it's gonna be the Jacksonville, Tennessee game. Like, dude, Jacksonville, Tennessee.
(01:25:55):
Stop Raiders Chargers. If you have a stadium camera or
a or a parking lot camera, you'll see, you know,
the type of fights you saw last night in Bengals Steelers.
That's a Raiders Charger game. Oh yeah, it's in Carson. Yeah,
that is not that. I would not bring my women
and children to that game. So you could do Rams
(01:26:17):
against Niners and see Jimmy Garoppolo potentially, I don't know
how much of play Week seventeen against the Rams. Don't know,
miss Jared goffel Plate. They may be playing for home
field avtage route. We don't know. Against the then you
could drive down the ten, over the one to the
one oh five, get off, go and seat. I think
it'll be flex Chargers and Raiders. Okay, go into go
(01:26:40):
in to go, have a meal in downtown, and then
get back on the one ten and drive over to
the forum, which has been redone, which is spectacular in
terms of uh watching a concert um as opposed to
watching with the Lake. It's where the Lakers used to play.
Watch Chappelle, go to sleep, Get up, and you got
the Rose Bowl. Georgia, Oklahoma. Like, dude, that's a guy Oh,
(01:27:02):
that's a guy day right there, the guy day right there. Um. Look,
here's my quick takeaway on the Bengals and the Steelers
in the That's a f C North football. I guess
it is right. Bengals and Steelers don't like each other,
and the Bengals found a way to lose a game
that rightfully should have won. That's a f C North football.
(01:27:25):
So like, am I bothered by how physical the game was? No,
that's football. And if you want to say, well, we're
trying to take that out of football, Okay? Juju Smith
Schuster is suspended for a game, so too is who
got suspended for the Bengals, Dan Buyer I Georgia Georgia Loco. Okay,
Georgia Loca. The defensive back who tried to take off
the head of Antonio Brown on the touchdown reception. Brown,
(01:27:48):
by the way, held onto the football showing like he
does a lot of that. He he talks to talk,
but he walks to walk as well. Um, but yeah,
it was physical. Yeah it was nasty. It was kind
of borderline dirty. But that's kind of what football is,
all right, It's exactly what football is. Exactly what football is.
(01:28:14):
Quick takeaway on the on the Warriors and Pelicans fight.
If you haven't been paying attention, here's what everybody in
the NBA is trying to do. They're trying to punk
the Warriors. They're trying to punk the Warriors. The word
is out because of what's happened to them in the
(01:28:34):
NBA finals the last two years, what happened to them
with the Celtics, what's happened to them in a couple
of different games, what happened to them when they played
in Oklahoma City. Is officials, sometimes we call the game
a little bit looser. Let you get away with some stuff.
When Oklahoma City comes in Oklahoma City scene as a
finesse team and you're gonna try and make it ugly,
You're gonna try and be extra sort of tough. You're
(01:28:56):
gonna try and punk them. That's what's happening. That's why
Kevin dur Kevin Randon getting a fight. The Marcus Cousin
is trying to punk him. Steph Curry sprains his ankle.
Like the takeaway is really really simple. Once you get
a scattered report out on you in the NBA, everybody's
(01:29:17):
going to try. It's no different than the NFL. What's
happened to the Kansas City Chiefs. People like, forget playing man,
let's play zone and you know, just let Alex Smith
dump everything to check everything down. Go ahead, check stuff down,
and we just gather to the ball, run to the
ball and tackle, you know, make make sure handed tackles.
(01:29:38):
And they've been the Chiefs have been unable to adjust
to the adjustment. Once you get a scattered report, people
are going to try and execute that scatterport. That's what
happened to the Warriors. And you know what the Warriors did.
They dropped thirty seven in the fourth quarter after dropping
thirty nine in the third quarter. I mean they've shown
in reality that they can tell a punch and land
(01:30:00):
a CounterPunch without swinging at all. Right, Like, that's a
seventy seven point second half. That's a you want to
be tough, guys, Fine, here's a couple of three pointers
and a couple of more. Staff drop story one and eleven,
Clay Thompson drops twenty two. They end up winning by ten.
(01:30:22):
With the New Orleans Pelicans, scatter repoort is out. The
only way you're gonna beat the Warriors is by mugging
the Warriors, and that's exactly what the Pelicans tried to
do and it didn't work. And then there's this. The
Browns have invested time and resources and play coaching into
(01:30:44):
Deshauan Kaiser this year, which is good for him. This
is from Pro Football Talk. Since the amount of time
is almost certainly gonna cut into whichever quarterback they draft
the top of next year, Browns coach Hugh Jackson conceded
the obvious on Monday by saying, this can't have too
many good quarterbacks right now on this football team. We
have to use resources at that position and go get
(01:31:07):
the right guy that we feel comfortable with to pair
them with some of the players we have here to
come up with the best quarterbacks for the Cleveland Browns. Yeah,
so the idea is they're probably gonna go out and
add another one. They have the number one and number
seven pick if the draft was to come down today,
and so people are trying to wonder whether or not
Kaiser is the guy. My NFL guys have told me
(01:31:29):
that Kaiser finally looks like the leader that he wasn't
in at Notre Dame the last two weeks with the
Cleveland Browns and while the Cleveland while the Cleveland Browns
appeared to be a complete dysfunctional mess, not knowing if
they should trade for a J. McCarron, if they should
not trade for a J. Mcare By the way, J
mcarren gave me a free agent in this offseason, they
can actually sign a J McCarron. So the fact that
(01:31:53):
that trade didn't go through, the possibility is they can
still get him anyway. But many of the holes that
they have are being short up. Gordon came back and
he's put a good The defense is young but pretty athletic.
The offensive line is not great, but they're playing without
(01:32:14):
Joe Thomas. He'll be back. Like they're not the worst
thing on earth. I kind of feel like, um, I
kind of feel like what what Hugh was saying is
the general wild, wild wildly held belief in football, which is,
you know, it's all kind of a numbers thing, like
(01:32:35):
your hit rate is, you're not gonna hit on just
one guy. You kind of gotta throw numbers at it.
That's the belief. And i'll give you the um, I'll
give you the the best kind of parallel to it.
Here's a college football story. You guys aware of the
sanctions on Old Miss music. Do you know what happened
(01:32:57):
with Ole Miss with the with the with the sanction. Yeah,
well they had some self and pose postseason bands and
sacrifice a couple of scholarships. But then the n c
A came down and took away even more scholarship. Right,
so players can transfer out. Many are in fact transfer out. Um.
And I don't know if you know who their their
quarterback is, but he's actually super super talented athletic. His
(01:33:20):
names Shaye Patterson. Okay Say Patterson is a sophomore. He's
from Shreeport, Louisiana. He uh uh this year he's he's
and he's a run pass threat as a quarterback. He's
visiting Michigan. Now, remember Michigan also has Dylan McCaffrey sitting out.
That's Christian McCaffrey's brother, who is a four star product
(01:33:45):
and supposedly another potential Michigan quarterback. If you've watched Michigan
play football, they are All you need to know is
if they had a quarterback, they'd be playing in the
college football playoff period. And so instead of saying, hey,
look I believe in Dylan McCaffrey, he's like I liked
(01:34:07):
Dyl McCaffrey, I got a bunch of other guys, and
I got guys on the way and maybe Shape Patterson.
Because football is a numbers game, right There's a hit rate,
and even if your hit rate is high, it's like
fifty or six. And I kind of think that's what
the Cleveland Browns are going with. Like do we have
Deshan Kaiser? Yeah? Is he rightly? Maybe maybe we go
(01:34:29):
out and get a j mccaren too, or maybe we
draft a quarterback, or maybe we have all three and
just try and get a one in three if we
find one good quarterback out of three, we found our
good quarterback. But I will tell you that people around
the NFL have told me they actually has some talent.
They're just too young to win right now. Be interesting
(01:34:50):
to see if they can take down the Packers this weekend. Uh,
I'll take it to New York where they searched for
a general manager in a head coach. Plus, we'll take
it to Pittsburgh. Find out an update on Ryan Shasier
and if he doesn't play, how that affects their playoff future.
Terrible news when he went down one because you think
(01:35:12):
a guy might not walk again, but it feels like
he's gonna walk him. But will he play again this year?
That's a devastating blow to their defense. He is absolutely
the head of the snake. Go good, Pittsburgh, go to
New York next. First you heard me to uh, you
heard me talking about the amazing shave I get from
my Dollar Shave Club Razor, so smooth, so silky. People
think my face is actually a baby's bottom. They do.

it all again get have New Weight until then. Ah,
(01:36:44):
this is Mike Pence's least favorite song. By the way,
you know what it's called music, It's called beer. And
then I said, I think I'll have myself up beer
real real big fish for you here on the Doug
Gottlip Show. Uh, the Penn's thing was just a joke.
(01:37:04):
That's because there's a Newsweek story that he rated out
his fraternity brothers on a dry campus and actually pointed
in the dean like those are the guys they have
the keg. Come on, man, my wife is a rule
follower like that. She's she is, She's a rule follower
like that. Our first date was at Eskimo Joe's and
still under Oklahoma, and she was shaking in her boots
(01:37:27):
because I purchased her a beer and she was not
yet twenty years old. Mike, listen, they might if I
wasn't twenty one, they might take it. They might kick
me out. There's zero chance that a pretty girl who's
twenty years old as a beer on her person. They're
gonna escort you when I bought the beer and gave
it to you. Zero zero point zero. That is bad
for business. You know, it's good for business when you
(01:37:48):
take when we take you to places where people know
way more about stuff than we do. We don't know everything,
but we know people that know what you want to know.
You know, sounds like you need a guy. I got
a guy. We got guys all over the country. Ladies
all over the country as well. They cover sports and
(01:38:09):
do a great job doing it. Paul Schwartz is a
giant speed writer for The New York Post. Since he
knows the Giants inside and out. You can follow him
on Twitter at ny Post Underscore Schwartz. You know, Paul, listen,
your your Twitter handle shouldn't be me the Schwartz be
with you. I just want to point out, I mean,
New York Post is great, but should the Swarts be
(01:38:29):
with you? Um? Okay, help me out with this. Um.
We were told by John Mary yesterday. Hey, no, the
Eli thing had nothing to do with us firing uh
both GM and head coach. But it was right after
the the PR disaster that was benching Eli Manning. Why
(01:38:51):
would John merrily I to us like that. Well, it's
a Doug. It's kind of a a a part of
a lie. He was going to fire Jerry Reese and
Ben mcindo after the season. Okay, So the timing of
it now came because they didn't want to prolong the inevitable.
(01:39:12):
And there's no question they did not want Sunday at
Giant Stadium against the Cowboys. They are fully aware they
have three of the last four games at home and
they would have been a disaster and not having anything
to do with what happens on the field, which is
a different kind of disaster. But they didn't want protest
and you know, banners flying overhead and just complete ugliness.
(01:39:34):
So the timing of it and that ugliness is not
because they were two and nine. It was because of
what they did to Eli. So you know, John is
kind of taking it half and half there. He did
not fire these guys because you guys messed up the
Eli Manning thing. He fired him because he's two and
nine and they were going to fire him anyway, But
because of the Eli Manning thing and because of this
unrest that was going to happen at the stadium, he said,
(01:39:57):
we gotta do it now. It will least avoid some
unpleasantness next Sunday. Um. But John Mayer also signed off
on benching Eli, or signed off on. The original plan
was they went to ELI and they're like, hey, look,
we're gonna pull you at the end of game. Maybe
at the end of game, because we've got to get
David's webb in there to see what he has. ELI
didn't like that and decided to not play. Like John
(01:40:18):
Marras signed off on it. I mean, this was the
plan and they need to see what they have and
by the way, it's better off if they lose. Like,
what is the win in in starting Eli? Now, well,
they are going to start Eli Manning against the Cowboys
c See this is this is where you know what
happens is the program director, the owner, I mean, the
guys in charge make the rules. And so John Mara said, yes,
(01:40:40):
we need to start looking at these young quarterbacks. Figure
out a plan. There is no good plan to do it.
You know, it's like it's like do you rip off
the band aid or do you take it off little
by little so it doesn't hurt as much? You know,
John Mara wanted him to take off the band aids
little by little so it didn't hurt as much. But
this is gonna be painful, right, I mean, removing Eli
Manning from the starting quarterback job is going to be
(01:41:01):
paid painful or you know, don't forget he started two
straight games. He also pretty much finished every one of
those games, so taking any reps away, meaningful reps away
from him would be very painful. Uh. You know, John
maraw wanted the the the result, but not the pain,
so he wanted it both ways. There was no good
way to do this. Because let's you're right. Let's say
(01:41:23):
you like plays Sunday, which he will and plays well,
and it's not inconceivable, and he plays well and they
win the game. There's no real way to get another
quarterback in the game. So you've won the game, but
you haven't seen the quarterback. Now you've got three more
games left to try it. Look, at some point they
got to see some of these other guys. And by
these other guys, I mean rookie Davis Webb, not Geno
(01:41:43):
Smith yea um. But like they're gonna do the exact
same thing anyway, right, I mean they're not gonna beat
the Dallas Cowboys. Sorry, right, they have no wide receivers,
they don't have a good offensive line, they can't run
the football, and their defense is decimated by injuries, right
and and and just they're not going to beat the Cowboys.
They're gonna be behind and they're gonna pull him anyway.
(01:42:05):
So I'm lost as what was what the win is? Well, see,
here's the thing. They don't think Davis Webb, the rookie,
is ready to play yet. And and part of this,
this this lack of of thinking and foresight, is that
they should have gotten Davis Webb reps in practice as
this season has gone on, because the two and nine
(01:42:26):
didn't just happen. You know, there was two and eight
and two and seven. They kind of saw this coming.
They didn't do that. So now even this Sunday, if
Eli doesn't play well or if something happens, Geno Smith
will come in because Davis Webb is not ready now,
they will elevate his workload in practice. So in the
last two or three games, I think we will see
him and maybe even start a game. Although you know,
(01:42:48):
with with the new coach, I don't know what's going
to happen. But you know, look they're too intent for
a reason, and it's not just because they're a bad
team on the field. There's a lot of stuff going
on here that just is not well thought out. Okay,
so give me the give me the names. What happens first,
GM or head coach? Or is their GM head coach? Uh?
You know, a guy who could have ultimate power, kind
(01:43:08):
of like we saw with Parcels at times. We actually
see it with McDermott with the Bills. I know they
hired a GM, but it was McDermott hiring his buddy
GM from from Carolina. Well, I think I think they
want to go um, you know, they do want to
go GM first. I mean, that's the smart way to
do it. You know, John Mara and the ownership has
has signed Ernie Corsi, their former general manager, to be
(01:43:32):
a consultant. Um. You know, he's been consulted with a
lot of different teams, the Lions, the Browns, the Panthers,
so you know he's kind of like a professional consultant,
not kind of. He is a professional consultant now, and
so he's gonna help John Marra spearhead this this search
for a new GM. So they really want to hire
a GM. Now. Another reason they did this now is
(01:43:52):
they feel they can have an advantage now, you know,
they can they can have their pick of any GM
that they want because, um, you know, they got a
four or five game head start. So I think, um,
you know that's where they'll go. And and and you know,
I don't know, you know, i'd be lying, but I said,
I know who the front runner is. I know Ernie.
Of course, he is very high on Dave Getleman, very high.
(01:44:13):
You know, he he's a guy who he um suggested
to the Browns to be the GM. He's the guy
who was instrumental and sending Dave Geentleman over to the Panthers. So, um,
you know, if the Giants wants something from their past
or if they want to go complete um outside their building.
You know, I'm not sure, but Dave Getleman is very respected.
Uh he built a Super Bowl team with the Panthers,
(01:44:34):
and uh, you know, I think it would be his
dream job to come be the GM of the Giant.
And then that's a good question, you know, I you know,
I don't I don't know who Dave's you know, I
don't know the natural head coach. I mean, you know, look,
Josh McDaniels is sitting out there and he's going to
get a job somewhere. You know, he was, he was.
He was not a good head coach the first time around.
(01:44:54):
And um, you know, in fact, I think he lasted
exactly the same amount of games as Ben McAdoo did
the eight So you know, for those who say, well
man Bacado was finished, well we'll see, you know, because
Josh McDaniels was not finished. Now I would I would
tell Ben McAdoo go become an assistant coach with one
of the greatest teams, you know, in in NFL history,
one of the greatest franchise and kind of build up
(01:45:16):
your resume there, which is what Josh McDaniels did. So
you know, he's a quarterback guy, he's from a winning system. Obviously,
Belichick I think would give you know him his blessing.
You know, Belichick runs a lot of strings there and
Belichick still has a Tomorrow all art for the Giants,
So you know, I think Josh Daniels McDaniels the guy
you gotta think about, all right. Paul Schwartz follow him
(01:45:37):
on Twitter. Should have changed his Twitter handle to the
Schwarts be with you instead. It's at ny Post Underscore Sports. Paul,
you do great work for the Post. Thanks much for
spending some time this being our guy in New York
coming the Giants. Thanks Doug anytime. Well, let's get to
Jerry uh Dulock in a second. First, let's get you
to Dan Fire find out what's going on in the
world of sports. Go ahead, Dann, Yeah, give you a
(01:45:57):
couple of other notes around the NFL's of what's happening
with Pittsburgh. Rob Gronkowski's appeal of his one game suspension
that was denied, so he will serve it in Monday
against the Miami Dolphins. In Week fourteen, Gronko and play,
of course do his wide receiver Juju Smith Schuster and
Bengal safety George Iloka each suspended one game for their
actions last night on separate plays. Florida State to name
(01:46:18):
Willie Tagger is their new head football coach. He'll be
introduced at a press conference tomorrow morning. Mario Christoval is
gonna be the Oregon interim head coaches. They played the
Las Vegas Bowl against Boise State. In a couple of weeks.
Santra Florida hired Missouri offensive coordinator Josh hypel Is their
new head football coach. Well Memphis gave head coach Mike
Norvell a new contract extension five year extension to remain
(01:46:39):
with the Memphis Tigers. Warrior Scott Steph Curry been ruled
out of Tomorrow's game against the Hornets because of a
sprained ankle. Nick scart Tim Hardaway Junior is gonna miss
at least two weeks of action because of a leg injury,
and the IOC suspended the Russian Olympic Committee from competing
in the winner games because of a quote systematic manipulation
of the anti doping rules end quote. Doug and the
(01:47:01):
latest at least with Ryan Shazier, doctor said that he
continues to undergo tests in Cincinnati. Yeah, that's not good.
I don't feel like that's good. You know, who would know.
We got a guy in Pittsburgh, A guy Jerry Luck
joined this covers the Steelers from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette
also hosted the Steelers Radio Network at Jerry with the
g Jerry Do Luck. He joins us on the Doug
(01:47:22):
Gottlip Show. What are you hearing in regards to here, Doug?
How are you? Um? You know, it's not as simple, uh,
you know as him just being released. Uh today, they're
going to keep them one more night. And and that's
why I think that we have heard uh that you know,
he's not out of the woods yet. But I say that, uh,
(01:47:43):
and and also pointing up that they feel um better
and have since last night about what could have been
with him and what actually is. So you know, they
feel more positive than they do negative, uh, in terms
of how serious that the injury was. So that's the
good news. And I think I think what happens in
(01:48:05):
these situations. They have to be careful, They have to
monitor swelling, They have to wait till some of the
swelling goes down, and then they and then they further
evaluate to make sure there aren't complications. But um, you know,
it seems to be okay. The next step, of course,
will be just how he recovers fully. Can he play
football again? I I don't think that same question. I'm
(01:48:28):
not gonna but I'm not gonna sit here and play
dr I haveman gotten that indication at all. Yeah, but
we haven't heard. What's weird? Is I mean? And look,
you're there, you cover the team, you know it way
better than we do. But like you would think if
they felt like he was going to make a full recovery,
or he felt like he could feel his extreme he
could moved his extremities. We haven't gotten that report yet,
(01:48:48):
and we're getting close to twenty four hours removed from
the injury. That doesn't seem that that that that seems
less hopeful than I thought. Yeah, I understand. And if
you heard Doug, if you heard Mike Tomlin's news conference today,
and I was traveling back from Cincinnati, and so I
wasn't there, but I did listen to it. The one
thing that struck me was his tone, um, and his
(01:49:12):
tone seemed subdued. Now, I say that understanding that he
probably didn't get home to about two thirty or three
o'clock in the morning, and he might be tired. Uh.
And that then lord knows what time he might have
even gone to bed, So I'll give him that. But
again I was listening, I didn't see him, um, and
and that that just struck me that much along the
(01:49:35):
lines of what you were saying. But again, the best
I could tell you is that they just want to
be sure before they make any decisions or any determinations.
I should say that the swelling has subsided. And my
guess is that apparently, but whatever it is entailed with that,
that has not happened. M Um. Okay, let's assume and again,
(01:49:56):
well let's assume and hope that he makes a full
and complete recovery. Let's assume he does not play for
the remainder of the season. Very strong possibility considering, Um,
you know it's the spine, right doesn't that doesn't that
substantially damage their Super Bowl hopes? Well, there's why if
there was one guy on the defense you can least
(01:50:17):
afford to lose. It is Ryan Shays here, So it
is going to make it more difficult. Yes, there's no question,
because they don't have that type of athletic linebacker in
the middle to replace them. It isn't as though they
have a young rookie or first year guy you know
who's been sitting and waiting in the wings, or in
the second year guy Tyler Mattockevitch. Don't get me wrong.
(01:50:38):
It's a nice, solid, smart player, but he's not the
athletic speed player that the Steelers. The Steelers like. Certainly,
nobody's as fast as Ryan Shays here at that inside
linebacker position. Uh So it is definitely it is definitely
going to hurt him and hurt them in that regard.
There's there's no question about it. Dug and while Cam Hayward,
(01:51:00):
if you were asking who's their defensive mp M v
P this year, I think nine out of ten people
would pick Cam Heyward. I think most people understand that
the Shades here is the most dynamic, disruptive player who
could do so many special things in the middle of
the field, blitzing at the line of scrimmage because of
his speed and explosive ability. And if yeah, that's it's
(01:51:24):
just gonna be a big loss one. Okay, uh, last
night was par for the course, right, even was Bengals
or the Colds or the Browns, it doesn't seem to
matter that the Packers they let inferior They let inferior
competition hang around and sometimes many times have the lead
until ultimately the better team wins. That's great, and it's
a talented team. But like you play with fire, you're
(01:51:45):
getting burned. Why why not? Why the struggles with inferior opponents? Yeah,
you know, Doug, I mean you're right, you know, you're
you're whistling past the graveyard, and you just wonder how
long that can keep happening. You know, it's funny the
store Atale. The Steelers have not when I say historically,
and I mean Bruce going back to the Bill Cower area,
I'm here, I'm not talking about when they dominated the
(01:52:07):
NFL in the seventies, but they've they've always been a team.
They don't blow if you look, they don't blow a
lot of teams out, and they rarely get blown out.
They play close to the vest is all as almost
as though that's their entire m O and and and
their ability to pull these games out in their resiliency
(01:52:29):
is very um, you know, it's very impressive to me. Uh.
One of the things I've done for years, Dug in
addition to the Steelers, is I also cover the PGA
Tour And one of the things I always remember about
Tiger Woods saying is that when he would win a
tournament or a major without his A game, and he
said that was all that sometimes was more important to
(01:52:51):
him because it showed that he could still win when
he wasn't at his best. Well, that's what the Steelers
have been doing. When they're at their best. They blow
out the Tennessee Heightens and they blow off to Kansas
City Chiefs when they were five and oh um. But
you know, their their ability to steal win when they're
when they don't have their A game, that's what That's
what resonates with me. Because they're nineteen and um, nineteen
(01:53:15):
and three in their last twenty two games, Obviously they
do something right. Great stuff. Jerry Delock covering the Steelers
for the Pittsburgh Post Seasette, also Steelers Radio Network at
Jerry Delocks Twitter handle Jerry, thanks so much for Jonius dog.
Nice chatting with you. So you needed a guy, we
got you a guy. I'll just say this like, look
(01:53:37):
that was when it wins a loss, When it wins
a loss. If you've watched what has changed with the
Dallas Cowboys defense when they've had or not had Sean Lee,
are you aware of what's happened to the l A
Chargers defense. Right Charger team. They've won three in a row,
(01:54:00):
They've won six of their last eight games. First half
the year. They without Denzel Perriman, their middle linebacker, like
the play caller there, some guys are replaceable in the
national football You can find other even defensive ends. You
can find um. Last year J J. Watt got hurt
and it didn't matter that much because you had you
(01:54:22):
had Jadeveon Clowney. Same thing this year with J. J.
Watt being hurt, is you got Clowney, He's having a
great year. You lose the middle linebacker, that's losing the
head of the snake. And especially the way in which
the Steelers defense is built. Look at the Cowboys how
they played with how they played without Shawn Lee. Look
at the Chargers how they played with how they played
without Perraman. Look at the Steelers and you start to
(01:54:44):
wonder whether or not they can be competitive in the playoffs,
as opposed to whether they have or don't have Ryan
Shay's here. Florida State has found their guy, but has Tennessee.
I will tell you next what True Car. You can

(01:55:07):
Doug Gottlieve show, Fox Boards Radio, Good College Hoop tonight.
By the way, hoop is plural, even though it's there's
no s Good College Hoop. Smarty taken on Rutgers My
boy David Revson on the call on the Big Ten Network. UH,
Zags and Cats. Those are the last two years ago
(01:55:29):
as national champions, last year's runner up playing an MSG
that's uh the Jimmy V. Classic. I don't normally promote
games that are not on our network, but that one's
to fight cancer. F you, cancer took my dad give
to the Jimmy V. Foundation. So, by the way, my
dad actually coached against jim Valvano. My dad was a
(01:55:50):
head coach at Milwaukee they played Iona. He was head
coach at Iona. After the game's in Jim Valvano's book,
After the game, my dad thought the ref one of
the referees was screwing him, and uh, we've got a technical.
And after the game, one of the referees came out
of the referees dressing room took his shirt off. Want
to fight my dad because some of the stuff my
dad said during the game. It's pretty funny anyway, Um,
(01:56:11):
I give you cold picks in a second. First, let's
get to all the things you might not know about
the world sports. Give a little opinion to back them up.
We call it the press. Do do Do Do do do Dude,
do do Do Do Do Do Do Do Do Do
Do Do by Dan Buyer, What do you got? Some
(01:56:31):
days are a little bit more crazy than the others.
This happens to be one of those days. You were
talking about the fires in southern California. There's a fire
up where I live, Doug. But it's not like a
Marquee fire. I was telling John and Ryan during one
of the breaks. It's like Cowboys. Redskins is the big
one that they have in Ventura County. I'm Bears forty niners.
Where I can, I can only get like a little
(01:56:52):
bit of information about our fire. That's how crazy it is.
There's so many in southern California just trying to get
all the info you can. All right, let's move on.
I thought maybe you'd have a fire coverage take fire.
Apparently not. I guess you want to talk sports. How
about that? He said? He said fire. That was awesome.
(01:57:15):
Hi hi, Hi here. Sports Illustrated announced their Sports Persons
of the Year today, Texans defensive end J. J. Watton,
astro second baseman jose L Tube sharing the honor as
they are the Sports Illustrated sports person What did they
do outside of being awesome at baseball? What a World
(01:57:35):
Series that was? You know? I mean J J. Watt
like raised hundreds of millions of dollars for flood victims. Okay,
so it's lub and what. Okay, one guy did a
lot of stuff for people. The other one did a
lot of stuff for a team. I don't know. Cool,
it is what it is it is. Florida State has
(01:57:57):
hired Oregon's Willie Tagger to be the Seminoles new head
football coach. We reported six year deal. We're thirty million
dollars according to some numbers. He'll be introduced tomorrow. I
like Willie Taggart. Look, I think when you look around,
I mean, you're gonna recruit against Dan Mullen now at Florida,
obviously in recruit against Mark Vickett. Uh uh at Mark
(01:58:20):
rick excuse me at at Miami. Miami seems to have
a role a little bit. Florida and Dan Mullen obviously
have connections, having been there before. This will be fasting
to see how he does in the A C C
and whether or not Jimbo Fisher's complaints about Florida State
not doing enough to support his football program um whether
that rings to be a problem for Taggart. I don't
(01:58:42):
think so. I love the idea of a younger head
coach from South Florida who's coached at the University of
South Florida and and built up that program, coming back
and try and do the same thing in Florida State.
I got more for Florida State news in a sect,
but other coaching news Memphis at coach Mike Norvelle getting
a contract extension to remain at Memphis. Yeah, can I
can you just say one thing about Norvelle. I mean,
(01:59:04):
obviously he would have been a smart hire at Tennessee,
but Tennessee has this thing we don't want to hire
memphisis coach. Like that's the dumbest thing ever. It's it
is could be Arkansas UM targeting Chad Morris, the SMU
head coach, for their gig as well. That's around Morris
is tremendous if he finds if he gets somebody defensively,
who can you know, who can who can do the
(01:59:26):
things he's not. He's a Remember he was at Clemson.
He was the highest paid offensive coordinator in the in
football when he's at Clemson. SMU is a good offense
as a terrible defense. He's gotta get somebody who can
build his defense and then he's gotta recruit to that defense.
Florida State's safety Derwood James is gonna enter the NFL
Draft and won't play in the Independence Bowl against Southern
(01:59:46):
Mississippi UM. I normally like guys to play in their
bowl games, but Independence Bowl against Southern Miss don't care, honestly,
don't care. So whatever I think that for Nette McCaffrey
last year, understandably on why they wouldn't. I just think
you're gonna see more and more of it. And I
(02:00:07):
would argue as well that the coaches rather care more
about the two weeks of practice they get. Actually they're
younger guys, but you also want to win. It makes
you know, uh, it makes everybody feel good. Doctors tending
to Steelers linebacker Ryan Chase here says he's undergone a
(02:00:28):
series of tests on his spine, and more tests are
going to be happening in the next forty eight hours
than doctors there will transfer him to Pittsburgh from Cincinnati,
where he will be hospitalized in the Steel City. I mean, like,
initial reports are he's gonna be okay, right, which is great.
But when we don't hear automatically gonna make a full recovery,
feel good moving his legs and like we're getting the
(02:00:49):
twenty four hours, you start to you start to worry, right,
Like you start to worry. It's it's no different than
when you you don't hear from your life. You're like, Hey,
what's hell's going on here? Right? Like? How long I
gotta hear from you? Just like text me like okay, okay,
although uh does your what now? You haven't been married long. Like,
when you land and he fly somewhere, you're supposed to
text her, email her right away. I just always do
(02:01:09):
out of habits. You know, landed about to take off
that sort of thing right away for sure. Um, the
Philadelphia Eagles don't have to fly very far. They flew
from Seattle to southern California because they've got a game
against the Rams coming up on Sunday. RAMSA coach Sean
McVeigh confirmed that the team does have contingency plans to
deal with crowd noise for their games Sunday against the Eagles. Yes,
(02:01:32):
it's a home game for the Rams, but the Rams
are the one who are coming up with plans in
case it's too loud for them to operate. Because there's
so many Eagle fans and they played against the Chargers,
is that why? Yes? And they the Eagles are practicing
at Anaheim Stadium, which they should have reconfigured Anaheim Stadium
so that the Chargers could play there for a couple
of years. I used to watch the Rams play there.
(02:01:53):
I don't think that would be a problem. There's plenty
of Rams Bandwagon fans. Ramas, by the way, not a
Bandwagon fan. He's been long time Rams fan. Yeah, even
stuck with him through the uh the trip to uh ST.
Louis Hey Hall of Fame. Quarterback Kurt Warner is gonna
replace Chris collins Worth on a couple of NFL broadcasts
during the regular season. Warner will join Mike Tarrico on
December sixteenth for a Bears Lions game and on Christmas
(02:02:17):
Day for the Steelers. Texans showed out, So it's those
are those Thursday night games that's the extra crew, right,
because collins Worth is is overworked or whatever, and so
Michael's and collins were still their first team. And then
Saturday game like, well, the Christmas Day game is a
Monday game, but I think December sixteenth is a Saturday game.
I'll be interesting to see if I've heard Kurt on radio.
(02:02:38):
I've never seen him do a TV game, that's how hard.
But working with Toriko Trico makes everybody look good. I mean, honestly, dude,
a savant, want to bag it out there and pressed
that was the press. Torico one of the brightest people
I've ever I've ever been around, forget that just broadcast,
just ever been around, like incredible incredible ability to uh
gather information and make it sound like he's been ring
(02:03:00):
the sport for years, when you're like you've been You're
just covering football five minutes ago. Now you're doing biggest
basketball like Texas and M tonight against Arizona. That game
is in Phoenix. There are one point favorites. I know
Arizona is played better of Late uh A and M
might well be the best team in the SEC. But
and I like Nova, who's a favorite five point favorite
against Gonzagas A two favorites Tonight In college basketball, Willie
(02:03:24):
Taggert Florida State. That should be interesting Tennessee. Still no
head coach. Looks like Arkansas is going to get um
Chad um uh oh god Chad Morris, who's a spectacular
offensive mine but not much of a defensive mind. Back
tomorrow on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Check me out on
Facebook Live college basketball soon
