Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Boom, What Up America,
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. You know, we are
on the brink of a huge NFL weekend, huge and
sometimes we confuse, we confuse things. We we believe what
(00:23):
is interesting is important and what is important is interesting,
and sometimes the two It could not be further from
the truth, and this weekend is a perfect example of that.
There's examples in real life we'll get to, but I
do think there's a lot of discussion. I was just
listening to uh two shows we run here on our
Premiere Radio family of networks. Fox Sports Radio is owned
(00:44):
and run by Premiere Radio Networks, and uh Con Cowherd
Show and Rich Eysing Show, which run at the exact
same time, and I get a chance to listen to
both of them, and both focused a huge amount of
attention on the Steelers versus the Patriots. They're both sexy team,
abouth teams. We have expectations of reaching the a f
C Championship Game. They're both historically great franchises. Patriots of
(01:06):
the last twenty years, the Steelers for the last fifty years.
You got Big Ben, you got Brady, you have the
fact that, uh, when Big Ben has been good, they
haven't beaten Brady in the playoffs, right and uh, Whereas
Brady has run rough shot over the Steelers, on the
other hand, his defense is more fallible. Gronk wasn't playing
last week. They're coming off of beating They're playing on
(01:27):
the road. It's an interesting game, right. The Steelers have
talked about we're gonna place more man this year. Haven't
done it a bunch. Joe Hayden being hurt obviously change
some of that. Will the Steelers change their identity as
a zone blitz team because you can't beat Tom Brady
(01:48):
with his zone blitz Miami Dolphins on Monday, the Giants
and the Super Bowl. Everyone knows in order beat him,
physical with the wide receivers, get after him with four
change of pre snap looks, YadA, YadA, all the football
game him talk scratch yourself and as you can't do
cover too, you can't do any of those things. Okay,
those are those are interesting. That game is interesting. Tom
(02:10):
Brady looked old on Monday. The Steelers defense without Ray
Ryan Chasier, I think, is a shell of its former self.
Not just because the emotions of losing that type of
young leader athlete in the middle of your defense. But
because you can run the ball against it, because he's
the reason he has such a good reputations, because he
(02:31):
is actually that good when he's healthy. Like, there's a
lot there that's interesting. But the Steelers have won their division,
right the the Patriots have won their division like they're
gonna be in the playoffs. They're still likely to be
in the a f C at least division round, if
not championship game. And where the game is played is interesting.
(02:54):
But let's also be honest, Brady has had a ton
of success in Pittsburgh in the past. Someone if he's
not six tests in the regular season, that's interesting. But
what's more important. Kansas City has taken on the l
A Chargers. Who do you want to talk about a
team that could be both of these teams. Chargers could
right dynamic pass rushing combination with uh Joey Vosa and
(03:21):
Melvin ingram Um, one of the best shutdown cornerbacks in
the league, quality running game, improve offensive line plethora, cornucopia
uh Schmorgasborg. That's three. That's of of talented players for
Philip Rivers a talented quarterback who's performed well in the
(03:42):
playoffs before, and he's played in hostile road a hell,
every game the Chargers play is a hostile road environment.
So the Chargers could be a dangerous team the playoffs.
But if they lose to the Kansas City Chiefs tomorrow
night in Kansas City, they're two games back in the
Chiefs in the same division because the Chiefs beat him
in Carson. Same thing with the Rams. Everybody loves the Rams,
(04:05):
and I love the Rams. Ra almost loves the Rams.
He's a Rams fan. He's old school Rams fan. And
Jared Goss better than we thought. They too have a
talented running back. They too have a corner copy of
plethora smorgasborg Um, pot pourri, potpouri of players for Jared
Goff to throw to. They too have a dynamic defensive
front they can get after the pastor they too have
(04:26):
although some injuries down the defensive backfill. But like look
good kicking game. Everybody's in love with the Rams. But
if they lose the Seattle, there two games back of Seattle.
Because they lost the Seattle at home in Cooper Cup
dropped a Shirt touchdown past in the end zone way
back when you even go the Carolina Panthers taken on
(04:47):
the Green Bay Packers. It's not as interesting as Steelers Patriots.
More important though, Aaron Rodgers had to um steel rods
or plates whatever put into his excume throwing shoulder. If
you're watching his son social media stream this thing live,
(05:08):
it had thirteen screws put in to his collar bone, clavical,
whichever one you want to go with, it's actually the
same thing. He came back early, and he wants to
say I'm not here to save the season. Well, that's
a white horse that he's riding in on, right. I mean, dude,
they almost lost to the Browns without him, and now
(05:30):
they go in to Green Bay to to Carolina, a
team that is fighting for their own playoff lives. That. Yes,
they beat Minnesota, which looks better than it actually was
because Minnesota was playing a bunch of backups because they
have a decrepit offensive line, and they needed an incredible
scramble by Cam Newton to seal the deal. But they
(05:50):
still have Atlanta to fight with and the Saints to
fight with just to make the playoffs or potentially win
their division. And of course, if the Carolina Panthers lose
this game, now, is that set them back in terms
of trying to win the division? Also in the wild card,
it puts them back of the Green Bay Packers head
to head, like those games are way more important. Even
(06:12):
if Brady five rings Rothsburger two rings is more interesting.
This happens all the time in life, all the time
in life, right like in baseball, we pay so much
attention to the high price, big name free agents. When
(06:33):
I'll tell you what's interesting. Joe Smith was signed yesterday.
It's a friend of the show, friend of the program,
but signed yesterday by the Houston Astros. What's the biggest
flaw to the Houston Astros? And they're in their run
to winning their first World Series ever? They're bullpen. Who
are they gonna have to go through in order to
win another World Series? The Yankees. Joe Smith was with
(06:54):
the Indians in the playoffs and he was brought in
I believe three, it might have been four times to
get Gary sanch Has out, to get Aaron Judge out.
And you know what he did. He got Gary Sanchez out.
He got Aaron Judge out. Now his reward is fifteen
million over two years. Nice contract for a guy that
was making Penny's last year on a one year deal
with Toronto. But the fact is that his signing is
(07:17):
way more important than some of these other big than
Manny Machado possibly being traded by the Baltimore Orioles. It
just is. It's Manny Machado is super interesting. Like the
Orioles used to be big spenders and now the sudden
they're not even They're not even messing around, like we're
not signing him. It's super interesting that Derek Jeter would
(07:42):
part ways with John Carlos Standy just happened to send
the the only star he had remaining to the team
that he's an iconic player for. Like, that's interesting, but
you know it's more important. You win World Series based
upon your bullpen, right, You need a starter or two
obviously maybe three, and bull bullpen almost almost led to
(08:07):
the demise of the Astroids. Kind of interesting thing was
many ways their bullpen was better in the World Series
than the Dodgers bullpen was, and the Dodgers actually had
a good bullpen on paper. Anyway, Don't be confused. Interesting
and important are not the same thing. Sometimes what's important
(08:29):
is interesting. Sometimes what's interesting is important, but they don't
always have to correlate. And this weekend of the National
Football League, you have one really really interesting game. Right.
It's in a historic venue, and I know Hines Field
is not Free River Stadium, but still it's in Pittsburgh.
It feels like it's on grass, it feels like football.
(08:52):
The weather is probably gonna suck. He got the Steelers
and Roethlisberger and Mike Tomlin, who's a great quote and
Bill Belt that could not be any two different quotes.
Bill beltic what and Mike Tomlin, who says everything that
you want a head coach the same terms of motivating
his players. You got Antonio Brown is the best wide
(09:13):
receiving in the league. You've got Levian Bell is the
best running back in the league. Going against the Patriots
who always find a way. Who's the white guy who's
gonna make a bunch of catches on third down? Now
that Edelman's out? You know what, it seems to always
be the little white a little white guy, right right,
Gronk back from suspension, Brady with the five rings? Is
he all of a sudden like all those things are interesting.
What's important, though, is Charger. You gotta get a win
(09:35):
on the road. Ram's gotta get on on the road.
Packers gotta win on the road. Otherwise, why the playoff
picture changes greatly? Interesting? Important, not always the same thing,
all right? Daniel Jeremiah joins the show. Up coming next,
I'll get his thoughts on those important games as well
as the interesting game gets you ready for a huge
(09:56):
NFL weekend next. But first, please join me in Fox
Sports Radio. We partner with the Salvation Army to help

so the Salvation Army does work in every zip code.
When you contribute your money, it'll go right back to
your community. Salvation Army serves over over twenty million people

NFL Network dj I said that, look, Patriots Steelers is
super interesting, but to me, Chargers, uh Chiefs more important. Right,
Chargers can't get two games back of the Chiefs getting
(11:43):
swept by them. Same with the Rams and Seattle. Same
really with the Packers in Carolina. Because Aaron Rodgers comes
back if he loses on the road, it seems all
for not. Are you with me that those games might
be more important, even if Steelers Patriots is more interesting.
I'm with you, Doug. I think you look at the
Packers and the Chargers specifically. Um, what they've done recently
(12:05):
to put themselves in this position is admirable, but if
they don't win this week, it doesn't matter. Um, So
this is this is kind of a loser leaf town
match for those two teams especially, they have to go
on the road and get tough wins. All right, let's
start with the Chargers team. You know very very well. Um,
they are a zone team defensively, which is good because
that's the way in which people have handled the Kannsy
(12:27):
Chiefs and Alex Smith. But they seem to they seem
to get lost with all the motion they seem the
play calling style of the Chiefs seems to give them
fits and they round the road. I know they play
a lot of quasi road games when they're playing in StubHub,
but this is a real road game in a real
tough environment against the Chiefs team that really needed to
win last week and got one. It has to feel
(12:47):
better about themselves. What are your thoughts in their matchup
against this version of the Kann City Chiefs. Well, I
think you have a new coaching staff there with the Chargers,
and especially look on the defensive side of the ball, Um,
Gus Bradley getting the second cry at Andy Reid. I
think there'll be a little more familiarity, uh this time around.
I don't think you're gonna see them turning guys loose
and um, you know, I look, this game to me
(13:07):
comes down to who you trust at the quarterback position,
who do you trust on the defensive line, And I
think consistency with the Chargers in both those areas, I
think you give them a huge edge. That's interesting that
you that you trust even on the road the Chargers.
All right, let's go to that. Uh that Green Bay
Packer Carol Carolina game. Um, Carolina looked good last week,
(13:28):
but part of it was the depletion of the Minnesota
Vikings offensive line. How do they match up with the
Green Bay Packers, Assuming that maybe Aaron Rodgers is in
perfect ten Aaron Rodgers, but he's eight and a half.
Aaron Rodgers. Yeah, here's the thing. I think the challenge
for Green Bay is they can't afford any rust and
this one, I don't think their defense is going to
(13:48):
be able to slow down Carolina. Carolina played like we've
seen recently, especially with Kim running the football. Um. If
that's the case, I think there's gonna be points early
and often for Carolina, and I think it's got a chance.
If the Packers gonna win, they gotta win the shoot out.
The challenge there is Aaron Rodgers does not afford any
time to knock off some rusts. I think he can
carve up I think he can carve up this secondary,
(14:09):
but he can't. They can't afford to start slow in
this game, or I don't see it happening for him.
This is a lot of excitement, a lot of build
up for Aaron Rodgers coming back in the Packers of man,
I don't I really don't like him in this game. Uh.
The Seattle Seahawks just got punched in the mouth by
the Jacksonville Jaguars. They gotta go back home. They still
have a massively depleted defense, but they seem to find
(14:30):
a way, right, Like they just kind of find a
way against the Rams team that was competitive last week
against the Eagles, uh even before Carson Wentz went out,
but again could not beat in the league team. And
this is a this is a team they can't go
to games back now of the Ram of the of
the Seahawks in terms of getting a home field game.
Um in the in the division round of the playoffs.
(14:52):
How the Rams match up with this version of the Seahawks. Well,
I think when you just look at what happened last
week both these teams, I think they both emptied the
tank in physical games with with Jacksonville was Philly. When
you look at this matchup, I think the Rams have
a favorable When you want to just go matchup for matchup,
I think they're favorable. They're d line against the Seahawks
offensive line on down the board. I just think when
(15:13):
you look at the emotional expense from last week and
then you look at Seattle being at home in this contest,
I think the Rams are a better football team. I
think the Seahawks win the game. Okay, let's um. It's
funny you talk about empty in the tank. I feel
like the ram. The Ravens emptied the tank, right, I
want to talk to you about what Cleveland is doing
in their front office. But like this may be crazy,
(15:35):
I feel like this is Cleveland's for They've been close
to the last couple of weeks. They were competitive with
the Chargers. They lead the Packers late last week, and
the Ravens emptied the tank in Pittsburgh. You scored thirty
eight points in Pittsburgh, and you're going to Cleveland, a place,
of course, in which the Ravens used to live, used
to be the Browns. What are your thoughts in the
possibility of Browns get their first win. Well, you and
(15:56):
you and my buddy Bucky. You're on the same page
because Bucky is calling for the Browns to win their
first game. I just said he was crazy because I
wanted to mess with him. But uh, you look when
when you look at the factors you just mentioned, Yeah,
I'd be scared to death if I was in Baltimore. Ravens,
their offense has been uncharacteristically explosive the last couple of weeks.
You figure that's going to kind of come back to normal.
(16:17):
And the Browns with Josh Gordon, have found some life offensively.
So it's a it is a scary, scary game for
the Ravens. And trust me, haven't been in that organization
for four years knowing what goes into not just playing
that game against Pittsburgh, but the hours and the preparation
that go into that rivalry. That is a tough turnaround
to go on the road in a very sleepy, you know,
(16:39):
kind of a tough place to get up game in Cleveland.
If I'm the Ravens again, do you better come out
and jump on him quick and just get it over
with if you If you let him hang around, it's
gonna get real scary. When first came to the United States, Uh,
their cars were cheap and um though people bought them,
they weren't made particularly well. Now they're making luxury automobiles.
(17:03):
And I think when they first came out with the
luxury cars, people were like tapping and go like, you know,
it's ten thousand less than Alexis. It looks like Alexis.
It looks like a Caddy. I don't know. And now
people are kind of starting to buy in and buy
I relate that to the Jaguars, right, Jaguar has been
so bad for so long and Bortles, Uh, Bortles put
(17:24):
up yard put up numbers the past couple of years,
but no one bought in. Now all of a sudden,
he's throwing the ball around. They beat Seattle. We know
how talented their defenses. Like, am I allowed to buy
into the idea that Blake Bortles is a legitimate uh
could legitimately quarterback his team to a super Bowl? Well,
I don't think he'd be leading that team to a
(17:45):
super Bowl, but I think he's shown recently that he
could come along for the ride. And he won't. He
won't be the the emergency break to stop it from
the emergency break. That's a great that's a perfect analogy.
Good job. Yeah, we're keeping the car team here, Doug. Uh,
Look you no, I think if he can play like that,
they're very capable. And this is almost sacrilegic to say this,
but if you kind of look back at some of
(18:07):
the teams that jaguarths kind of remind me of. You
go back to when we were young, Doug, the Dallas
Cowboys before Jimmy. You know, that was a one win
team even with him, and they were just so bad
and then they just they just steadily accumulated a ton
of good players, and I think people were still kind of, wow,
there's still a couple of years away. Before you know it,
they were. They were. The process was sped up, and
they got there a lot faster than people think. It
(18:29):
wasn't that long ago before Pete Carroll that Seattle was
kind of a laughing stock up in the north Northwest,
and that thing got turned around faster than people expected.
I feel like the Jags are kind of in that
same thing. They've got it built, not just for this year.
They're gonna be good for a very long time. They're
in great cap space situation, and they have so much
young defensive talent. I mean, they they're not going anywhere. Uh.
(18:50):
John Dorsey's the new general manager of the Cleveland Browns.
He came out and said that the last group didn't
get real players. Now, look, you might think that, and
on some level you might be right, But to say
that on a local radio interview while you still have
games to play, that that that feels like bad form.
(19:11):
And even if he's right, that just doesn't feel like, dude,
you got there. There are some players that they have
acquired the past two years that can play football, But
even if they couldn't, that doesn't feel like good form.
How do you think you've been in the NFL front office,
Daniel Jeremiah joining us from the NFL network, How do
you think those words will will be heard inside that
locker room? Well, here's my I'm gonna psychoanalyze this thing
(19:34):
for a second. Just just hear me out on this one.
But I was told when Tom Coughlin got back to
Jacksonville this last year that he told some people, after
being around the organization for a while, this whole building
has got way too comfortable with losing. It's way too
comfortable around here. So he shook it up a little bit.
You talked about helping institute these long physical practices and
(19:56):
making people uncomfortable. I almost think this might be John
Dorsey coming in here and saying place is so loot
used to losing, and the accountability level has been so low.
Right now I'm not coming here, And maybe he's maybe
you need somebody to come in there and make these
types of statements, throw some furniture around and say, hey,
this is not this isn't gonna work anymore. I just
(20:16):
I also know that the guys have. As much as
there's some nodding going on, there's also some guys that
have some serious pride and uh, and it gets it
gets shook. We'll we'll see what their reaction is to it.
Can't get worse. Yeah, you're right. I actually think they
have played hard though this year. Um, I think that's
that goes to it though. It's He's He's coming in
there and said, I don't care if you play hard
(20:37):
you guys, you guys aren't winning anything. It's not good enough.
You're not either. The results aren't good enough. So that
means that you guys aren't good enough. Look, all of
that can be all of that can be accurate. I
just I don't. I'm not sure I love the message.
All right, cowboys traveling to take on the Raiders. I
believe that the Cowboys, if they can get into the playoffs,
(20:57):
if they can survive till Zeke gets back. And I'm
not a huge dad guy, but I think they're as
super dangerous team as they've gotten healthy. Uh, what's the
likelihood they go into Oakland and take care of business?
I think they I think they've got a very good
shot of going in there. I just the Raiders are
just kind of all over the place right now. And
the Cowboys. It's funny when when I went and watched
(21:17):
their tape this last week, so much talk about, Okay,
Dak played better. You know, Daz is doing his thing,
and and uh, you know, DeMarcus Lawrence is having a
great year. That team goes as Sean Lee goes. He
is a freak show. He is so good. And when
he's out in the field, that defense is totally different.
And now you get Zeka Elliott back on offense. Yeah.
(21:38):
I mean they're a dangerous team if they snuck into
the postseason, no question. Okay, let's get to Steelers Patriots. Um,
how do you explain what happened to the Patriots on
Monday Night? Well, I think you look, you look at
a team that's a man team in Miami, physical man team,
and every team you want to have man beaters. Who
are your guys? Well, the first one be Edelman obviously
(21:59):
he's out for the here, and then next time the
list would be Gronk and he's gone. So you gotta
have guys that can win in those situations. And they
didn't really have anybody that could win. I mean, they
could to Brady to get the ball out on time,
and they can hit spots and get the spots with
these receivers and every now and hit some guys running
on those deep over routes, running through zones. But if
you want to lock up at the line of scrimmage,
you've gotta have some guys that can win. And the
(22:20):
third guy on that list would be Cooks, but man
Zavian Howard just locked him up. So it's nice when
you have more than one option that can win in
those situations. Gronc. Gronc makes them a totally different offense.
I tend to agree, and they're playing against the Steeler
team that is not traditionally a man team. Can Can
the Steelers style work against the Patriots? I don't think so.
I mean maybe we'll, you know, look at the home game,
(22:41):
and I get all that, But when I see without
Ryan Shasier and even even in zone having to come
up and tackle those backs in space, having to cover
Gronk and tackle him in space, you better have some
inside linebackers that can run and cover, breakdown and tackle.
And I'm not real confident there with Pittsburgh. I said
that when they lost Chaser there goes there super of hopes.
Is that is that crazy talk? No? I mean, look,
(23:03):
it's they're gonna have to win. They only they only
can win one way. You know, you want to have
more than one way to win. If your offense has
it down day, they can't. They're gonna have to outscore everybody.
They cannot afford to have a bad day offensively, or
they'll lose in the postseason. Last one, um, we talked
with Mark Slayith. He he called the Niners game last
week and he's convinced the Niners have their quarterback. That
(23:23):
that they got a dude. And Garoppolo. You've now seen
him on tape enough with the Patriots and with the Niners.
Are you in the same boat. Yeah, he's pretty good.
I mean he's you start with poison, accuracy and decision making.
He's really good in all three areas. He's not the
most physically imposing guy, but he's plenty good enough for them,
and they just need to get some pieces around him now.
But yeah, I think that's I think that's dead and
(23:45):
very They got their guy. They want me. They don't
need to be in the quarterback market anymore. That's Danda Jeremiah.
Bucky Brooks joined us yesterday in studio. He and Bucky
have a great podcast. I encourage you to download it
as well to see his work on the NFL network.
DJ enjoy an outstanding NFL Saturday and Sunday. We'll talk
to you next week. All right, let's get to uh
(24:06):
the not well rested Dan Buyer who you may have
heard him if you were up overnight. Allan guy, Jason Smith.
I'm doing well and for Jason Michael Harmon On myself
last night carrying the rains from about eleven o'clock eastern
to two am Friday morning, and back at it with you, Doug.
So your your sleep cycle has gotta be a little
(24:27):
bit screwy. You get done it too. Uh And that
was Eastern time, so it was eleven o'clock out here
on the West coast. Okay, so eleven o'clock you get home. Well, yeah,
I fout quartered a twelve some construction on the freeway. Okay,
So um, like, how how long does it take you
to sleep? Get to sleep? I did have to kind
of cool down a little bit, so watch the Little
Food Network, Little Beat Bobby Flay late last night. Did
(24:49):
anybody beat Bobby Flay. Nobody ever beats Bobby. They do
at times, but last night he got the best of
I actually saw a couple of episodes. I think he
was two and one last night. So came out, came
out ahead. But it's difficult, it really is because yeah,
exactly exactly, so I got enough rest and you know,
and of course, hey jacked up to be here on
(25:11):
a Friday. What's going on sports? Well, I'll tell you
this much. Not good news for the Oakland Raiders. As
you were just talking with Daniel Jeremiah about their matchup
with the Cowboys, Amari Cooper not gonna play. Has been
ruled out of that Sunday night affair. The Jaguars you
also talked about, they've got their own issues with Leonard
Fournett didn't practice all week now, listed as questionable for
(25:32):
that matchup against the Texans. The last time that four
Net didn't practice all week and was listed questionable, he
ended up being inactive. That was in week seven. We'll
see his status closer to game time. On Sunday now,
the Texans faced the Jaguars and dealing with a toe
injury as well as Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. Different story, though,
is that coach Bill O'Brien believes Hopkins will be able
(25:52):
to go this from Major League Baseball. The Phillies have
come to terms on a deal with first baseman Carlos Santana.
Fan Raik sports is it's a three year deal. We're
sixty million dollars the New York the Phillies. Yes, rebuild
so no, so this is you can say it's a rebuild.
So this is a money graph, right, Like it's okay,
it's okay. This is the this is what happened when
(26:15):
Robbie Cano went to the Mariners. Like, I get it.
They offered you f you money and like you know,
end of the day, you're you. You play sports to
make money, right, So I I understand all of that, um,
but you don't you go, don't go from the Indians
the Windians to the Phillies unless you're like, you know,
I've won before. That's cool, it's fun, But now I
(26:36):
want to make as much money as possible. Maybe you
just wanted October off. That's a possibility, right, Like he's like,
I love fall Leaves. I want to I want to
get my mom, I want to get some cite and
I wanna, I wanna. I want to drive up the coast, right,
I want to I want to go to Nantucket. I
want to go to Matthisania. Anyway, go ahead? What other
baseball mode Yankees? Boy? They have? The Yankees are at
(26:59):
it again. Not going after Garrett Cole of the Pirates.
He's just down the street. Actually, yeah, like probably three
streets away Garrett Cole where he lives in the off season.
He bought he bought a house my buddies, a realtor,
like you know, Garrett Colinser's like, no, really, I might
knock on his door break the story. So the Yankees
are going after him, former number one overall pick out
(27:20):
of U c L back to being the Yankees. And
then did you report to the Angels signing? Are you
like you? You? You? Are you doing that on purpose?
You're like, I kind of think codes aren't a good signing.
I am. Usually I try to keep it within about
sixties seconds, So I'm sorry. I thought you try to
keep it within people who care, right, like, you can
(27:42):
talk about That's okay, nobody care. I didn't even talk
about the NBA that time. That's that's true. I want
to talk about the NBA UM. Look, there are certain
things to which I don't really want to be revealed,
Like you know, and I hate when people do this
when they take snapshots of their d M, their direct messages,
and then they published them. Like if you're having an
(28:03):
ongoing conversation with somebody, it's a direct best Like there's
some sort of privacy in conversations. It's it's okay that
we don't know everything. So I'm kind of okay with
if we didn't know what Lebron said to Alonzo Ball
last night. Now, the truth is that while I, on
one hand, I understand saying something to him in the moment, uh,
(28:30):
you know, it might be more powerful. Like, look, if
Lebron really wants to communicate with Alonzo Ball, he can
get his cell phone number and text a Lonzo Ball
or call Alonzo Ball on the way home from the arena.
Like everybody in the world knows how to get in touch.
There is no Remember, do you guys remember the movie
it was actually a it was actually a play Six
(28:51):
Degrees of Separation. Do you guys remember the movie music
has no idea. It's a it's a Will Smith's in it.
It's a it's a fascinating six Degrees of Separation with
Kevin Bacon. Have you ever seen the you ever seen
the movie? I have not. Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon
is the name of the game. Six Degrees of Separation
(29:13):
is the name of the play made into a movie.
And the idea is any two people in the world
are the You can find a connection between six six
degrees six people like and some And now it feels
like it's even less, even less. It's a fun game
to play. Ramost give me, give me two people to
(29:37):
people people, or you into somebody random, and we'll figure
out a way to get get you there. Ah jeez.
Me and m Harrison Ford Gaddison Ford, Harrison Ford. Um,
he's married to Chris A. Flockhardt. Right, what was the
(29:58):
what was the show she used to be in? That
was that was popular for a short period of time. McBeal,
Ali McBeal, Ally McBeal. That one I think would probably
be pretty easy is Ally mcbell was at a Fox production, Right,
so you know me, you know a bunch of people
who work on the Fox lot, Right, Like I know
Eric Shanks who runs Fox Sports. I'm sure he knows
(30:21):
the executive who did the movie Six Degrees, that being
about a bank done. There we go, by the way.
Christin Flockhart was one of those too thin, like I
almost she did. She have eating disorder for a while
or whatever, but she was very pretty, but then she
got to a very really really thin and Harrison Ford
not a particularly good pilot, one of those guys like, hey,
(30:41):
somebody don't let it. He's not good at flying. Favorite
Harrison Ford movie besides Star Wars would be UM one.
I can't remember the name now. It's where he's chasing
after the fugitive fugitive fugitive which was a remake, which
was a remake, um fugitive. More than when he was
Tom Ryan in Patriot Games or Tom Ryan Ja, I
(31:04):
mean Jack Ryan, excuse me, in Patriot Games or in
a Hunt for at October. I liked him in No,
he wasn't he wasn't know he was in Jack he
was Jack Ryan and Patriot Games. ALC. Baldwin was in
Hunt for It October. He was also clear present danger
was a two months he did he was in the
clear in prison das right, mm hmm, I mean he's
pretty awesome. It's Han Solo right, can't get any better
(31:27):
than that, you know, you know the you know, the
greatest line in the history of filmmaking in my mind
is right that, like the best the best line. Have
we done this before music? I'm gonna say it's when
Princess Least says I love you and he says right.
But let me get the setup has to be better
than that. Setup has to be better than that. Here's
(31:49):
the setup. Okay, uh Boba Fat is a bounty hunter
and he's going to bring Harrison Ford Han Solo back
to Jab of the Hut, where he, you would think,
will ultimately meet his demise. He's gonna be cryogenically frozen
in carbonite and they're gonna do it in this um.
(32:10):
The cryogenic freezing chamber is used for cargo. It's not
used for humans or whatever we call people in space
a long long way place, far away place, far far away,
long long ago whatever, so they don't actually know if
it's going to work. So forget about whether or not
(32:31):
he's going to meet his demise with Job of the Hut.
He didn't even know if he's going to survive the
cryogenic freezing, and he's just he's just now figured out
that Leia doesn't love Luke, or unless he loves Luke.
But I don't at this point that we know they
were brother and sister, not yet now yet we did
not know because there was a love triangle there in
(32:54):
the first one that I kind of feel like George
Lucas changed on the fly. I don't think like that
was the original plan. I think there was supposed to
be a love triangle initially. Anyway. So he's finally figured
out that he won the girl of his dreams and
she's a princess, and he's just like, you know, he's
this vagabond, he's this he's this huckster, right, he's kind
(33:15):
of a snake oil salesman. He made the parson, he
made the what's it called in uh par sex? Yeah,
like he's par sex. That's un undoable anyway, he's about
to be credited about it, likely die and she says,
I love you, and in that moment of both lust,
(33:38):
passion and possible to spare, he says, I know, I mean,
come on, like, it's like, you don't have to like
Star Wars. Hey, you don't even have to enjoy the
fact that Star Wars is out and people keep out.
But that's an amazing life. Amazing life anyway, Um, I
(34:00):
do think that something should remain secret, like we don't
need to know all the details. Like personally, I don't
care if armor Rossa was going into the White House
into the Oval Office or not, Like I don't care.
She's not going to the old office anymore. But I
thought it was interesting. Apparently they've they got somebody who
(34:22):
can It's not a lip reader, because Lebron was covering
his lips, but somebody who picked up there's like a
microphone close enough to pick up what Lebron said to
a Lonzo Ball And this is what it's reported as,
find your zone. Just stay effing locked in the media
is gonna ask you what I told you right now.
Tell them nothing. Just be aggressive every single day. It's
(34:44):
white noise to you. That's all it is. I let's go.
So it was words of encouragement. It wasn't I'm moving
to l a, you know, save a spot for me.
It wasn't as emotional even as when he and Dwayne
Wade hugged each other and he said we'll do this
again sometime soon, which of course has come to fruition.
(35:08):
So I guess I feel kind of dirty knowing what
a private conversation was, because pretty obviously Lebron, by covering
his mouth, wanted to remain private. But I did what
so many are guilty of. I shared with you basically
a d M between Lebron and Lonzo Ball. But if
you really wanted to be private, pick up the phone
and call him, and then it's really private. Will the
(35:33):
NFL head coach get fired this weekend? I'll tell you next.
Love as an army and you can join the fight,
help the Salvation Army fight for those in need all
over our community this Christmas. By going to Fox Sports
Tradio dot com clicking on the red kettle, I con
to donate or call one three three s a L
join Well Moly Doug Gotlin Show, Fox by a Radio.
(36:02):
I hope you're having a happy holiday season. Wonderful Merry Christmas,
tell of you and of course happy Hanukah. A night
for tonight, Let's play a game. This is Game Ties
on the Doug Gottlieb Show, Dan by, what's the game today?
(36:23):
The game today is psychic? Alright, psychic already knew that,
you know what? Why is that? Psychic? Alright? Well, psychic
Let's see if you can tell me these answers. Last night,
two coaches coached in the game, with both of them
being on the hot seat. We know Ben McAdoo is
already out of a job, so psychic will another NFL
(36:44):
head coach be fired before the season is over? We
know about Black Monday. No Black Monday. I mean, what's
what's the point at this point? Right? Sure? Right? I mean, um, now,
I mean I think Chuck Pogano is gonna get fired
at me. I think that one is kind of long overdue.
Are They're gonna clean house and I think they'll be
pretty good next year. Um. Hugh Jackson, no guarantees he'll
(37:07):
be back, but I don't think that will happen until
the end of the end of the season. Now, Black
Monday is Black Monday for a reason most teams. Unless
it's a complete look chance Jack del Rio gets fired
from Oakland, that thing has spiral completely out of control.
But I don't believe it will happen in the last
three weeks of the season. All right, Well, last night
was our final Thursday night game of season, and the
two year contract with CBS and NBC for Thursday Night
(37:30):
football is now up, So psychic, Will Thursday Night Football
have big changes next season? Yes? I think absolutely absolutely,
Um it will they'll have They'll have changes enough people
are unhappy with the product. I think people within the
league know that there's uh that there's too many games on,
(37:52):
and if they're gonna have too many games on, they
need the games to be better and they need less
complaining about it. They need all everybody. And I think
there will be changes in the formatting. I don't think
it's going away because it's money unless you can figure
out a way to create that revenue. Um, the eighteen
million dollars per game for those games, I don't I
don't see it happened. New Browns GM John Dorsey has
been a topic of conversation today on this program. He also,
(38:16):
aside from criticizing the talent level of his team, says
that anything less than a division title in ten for
the Bronze is unacceptable. So psychic, when will the Browns
actually win the a f C North three years? Three years?
I mean, look, they gotta get a quarterback. Maybe they
have Deshan Kaiser, but they got enough picks that they
(38:38):
know what they're doing. Like at some point that it's
at some point. It's got to happen in three years,
and it's an old division in his old division. Like
you know, Flacco is Um. He's not the same quarterback.
He wasn't win the Super Bowl. He's at the knee.
He's had a back issue. Ben Roethsburger at some point
the near future will retire Um. And since Anny Bengals,
you know, I don't think they think they have ultimately
(38:58):
their guy in any Dalton, A kind of stuck with
any Dalton is good but not great. Three years they
win the division. All right, Well, let's move on to
the NBA here, psychic, what type of reception will thunder
Forward Carmelo Anthony received tomorrow is he returns to face
the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, very warm reception. There's
a weird thing with Knicks fans. They hate everybody right
(39:21):
except their own. And but now they hate people that leave,
and they hate people that I hate, people that don't
play hard. Whatever, but they whatever reason, Carmelo Anthony was
always able to be well liked by Knicks fans. They
just like him. Maybe it's because he he made himself
into one of theirs. Mayde it's because they didn't feel
like Phil Jackson was fully invested. But him versus Phil Jackson,
(39:42):
people feel like he won even if he didn't actually
win games while he was a nick. Finally, psychic Mavericks
forward Dirkdovitski told the Dallas Morning News. While it is
at one, he says, it is looking like he will
return next season. So will Dirk Dovitsky return for his
twenty first season in the NBA? What else is he
(40:02):
gonna do? Right? Um? But look, I think that this
is one of the things they've done in the NBA.
By changing the schedule, they made it easier for older
players to hang around longer. And because he's a jump shooter,
obviously his defense struggles because he's a jump shoot it
do you know it takes him two hours. He gets
two hours of treatment at his house every day. Like,
I'm surprised he's still doing it. But I think the
(40:23):
NBA is less physical, the schedule is less taxing, and
he's found a kind of sweet spot where he doesn't
have to have a ton of money and he can
just be a leader and make jump shots, maybe even
come off the bench for the Mads in the future.

Colts lost at home last night. It looks bad, right
like you lose it home to the Denver Broncos, who
had not won a road game all year. You lose
(41:05):
it home to brock Oswa Way brock Ostwhile are good
or the Colts that bad? Probably the latter more than
the former. But the truth is that whether you're the
Broncos or the Browns, especially you wish you were the
Colts by the culture exactly where they need to be.
Next in the Doug Gotliep Show, Fox Sports Radio. What Up,
(41:28):
Snug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Coming to you from
the City of Angels, getting ready for what I told
you was important football games to l A. Teams involved
in important football games maybe not interesting Kansas City. They
were good now they're not Chargers. I think the rest
(41:50):
of America is still not really buying into how good
this team actually is. But those games Rams Seattle, those
games are important. The Rams can win in Seattle. You
can stick a steak in the heart of the Seahawks.
But the Seahawks are like that flew like you just
do You ever have a really bad cold and then
(42:11):
you know it just doesn't go away. That's the Seahawks,
Honest to goodness, it's the Seahawks. Um, I'm gonna admit
something to you, guys. That's very important, very important, Ramos.
I told you I wouldn't do, but I did, and
(42:31):
I feel like I need to. I feel like I
need to share. Well, this is a place to do it.
I think is a safe is a safe place. It's
a safe place, that's right. Uh. I watched them Thursday
night Football. Nothing wrong with that I did. Well, you
know it's a guilty pleasure, right, watching two terrible teams
that aren't going anywhere, watching brock Os while the wait
(42:53):
a second, is brock ostwall or decent or the Colts
that bad? And you think gold seem to be that bad?
But this is a very large, very large, very large rumpus.
But I kind of think the Colts are exactly where
everybody who's bad wants to be right. I think it
(43:18):
is the cults are playing young players. Quincy Wilson, Kenny Moore,
um Wilson continues to play really really well. No, I
mean like, look, he gave up a double move to
Damarius Thomas on third down. But in trying to find
(43:39):
the players of the future, Hey, Ross Travis there's a
name you need to remember for the future. Had a
couple of big catches in his first game in a
uh uh, first game in a Colts uniform. He's six
ft seven, he's really athletic, and he'll be playing next
(44:02):
year with Andrew Luck. Like all these other teams that
are bad Niners, maybe the exception, wish they had what
the cults had, Like who are the bad teams in
the NFL? Browns Browns have a lot of issues, But
the number one issue the Browns have had and the
reason that they fired Sashi Brown. They fired Sashy Brown.
(44:23):
He essentially got the mac Brown treatment. Don't get me wrong,
I think Sashy Brown made plenty of mistakes, was probably
in over his head, and the whole analytics staff didn't
help them out. But mac Brown lost his job of
Texas because he wanted Johnny Manziel to play defensive back.
He wanted r G three to play defensive back. He
wasn't able to get Andrew Luck. All of them are
from the state of Texas. Like you can go. There's
(44:45):
ten quarterbacks that ended up becoming tremendous college at least
college quarterbacks that he chose to pass on. Instead. He
had Garrick Gilbert that didn't work out. It was the like,
the Browns can do whatever they want. They're loaded up
with draft picks, but you got Deshaun Watson, got Carson Wentz.
She got like, you can't go through all the quarterbacks
that they've had a shot at, and that'll get you fired.
(45:06):
Browns need a quarterback. Jets who have been surprisingly decent
and Josh McCown before injury last week, has his best
season as a pro. But the Jets long term need
a quarterback. The Bears think they draft a quarterback. We
don't know. But so many of these teams are bad
because of one position, right, I mean, even the Arizona
(45:30):
Cardinals and Carson Palmer or whatever when he's not injured,
like Blaine Gabbage, is not the long term solution there.
You look at teams that don't make the playoffs, and
they almost all have one correlating factor quarterback play, either
injured quarterback or just not good enough. Buffalo Bills like
no one thinks Tyrod Taylor long term is the solution there.
(45:53):
Even when he's healthy, he's fine, and if you're great
around him, you might you might be able to break
the longest playoff drought in NFL in currently in the NFL,
But if you have a legit dude back there, it
allows you to have talent that's a slightly a notch
below what you need if you don't have a quarterback
(46:14):
back there. So there are signs of strength with their
young players. They keep losing games, which helps them in
what I think inevitably will allow them to fire Truck Pogano.
They're going to have cap space, they're going to have
draft picks, and they're going to have a dude back there,
not just a viable quarterback and experienced NFL All Pro,
(46:40):
Pro Bowl caliber quarterback, assuming that he's healthy with a
year off, rebuilt the entire thing around him. I kind
of think the Colts are destined for success. And like
with the Colts being where they are and as talented
as the Jags are like the Jags are. They're running.
(47:01):
The Jags are running the risk of being so good
this year in terms of their wins and losses that
they're gonna fool themselves into believing Blake Portles is in
fact good enough. Right, we all know Blake Portles isn't
good enough. I think Jacksonville probably knows Blake Portles isn't
good enough. Blake might even know that Blake's not good enough.
But let's go with it, right, But it's actually the
(47:27):
curse of success. They're gonna win the division, They're gonna
get a home field game. Hell, they might win a
couple of games, and they get to kid themselves going like,
you know, manby, Blake's not so bad, right. I mean,
this is what happens in relationships. Guy and a girl
are in a relationship and she wants out, all right.
(47:49):
She's like, ah, he is annoying. I can't stay with
this guy anymore. Then she gets pregnant, right, and he
starts treating her like a queen, because that's what you
do when your wife a girlfriend is pregnant. Plus he's like, oh,
she looks he looks at me so differently. Yeah, because
pregnant women when like, look, there's a difference when somebody's
pregnant with somebody else's kid. You don't look at them
(48:11):
the same way. When they're pregnant with your kid. You like,
that's the most beautiful woman on earth. It's a hard thing,
I know. Like, if you haven't had a pregnant wife
for pregnant girlfriend, you don't know this to be true.
But it's absolutely true. I don't know what it is,
but you get seriously turned on by your wife being
pregnant with your kid now somebody else's kid now so much,
and so you start to forget, like, oh, he you know,
(48:35):
he doesn't actually have a job. He always calls his
mom when things go well. He can't cook, he doesn't clean,
he's not exactly a bedwinner. You know, he works down
at the comic store shop. You know, like that, you
start to pick out the he started to be. You know,
he drinks too much, he smokes, he did. Like, you
start to forget all those things because you're pregnant and
he looks at you differently and he's working harder and
(48:58):
he's trying to fix things and whatever. Whatever. It's the
same thing with the Jaguars. The truth is that the
fundamentals of what makes you a good team. You got
young talent, you got a quarterback. You're gonna have a
clean slate with the new head coach. A general manager
has got a year to kind of figure out his personnel.
And you got a division which you can tell me
all you want about Houston their defense and when they
(49:18):
get to Shaun Watson back, but it's like Houston is
probably gonna switch coaches too. And Deshaun Watson was good
for a couple of weeks, but that system, having a
college system at quarterback that usually has like a four
to eight week window and then eventually they figure it out.
Plus Deshaun Watson's coming off his second toward a c
L and then you know they're gonna as soon as
(49:40):
he's healthy, they're gonna put him back as the starting quarterback.
Like it's not and Tennessee should be better. Tennessee is
like the worst team with a good record in the NFL.
I'm I'm the Colts. I'm I'm feeling really good about
where i am, even though last night they showed they're
not very good. It might be counterintuitive, but it's the
reality of the situation you have not just a orter,
but it's not like you're drafting a top quarterback, which
(50:02):
is a fifty fifty shot as to whether that they
play out. You know that if Andrew luck is healthy,
he's really really good, and he's been experienced, and you've
had enough time to start putting some new places pieces
around him, you'll draft with a high traff picks working
a good piece around him, and you have some caps
cap flexibility, kind of like where the Colts are. Even
(50:22):
though they lost to a Brock Osweiler led Denver Bronco
team at home last night in a half field stadium,
everybody wishes they were the Colts. Better to be bad
and have a dude than be okay and not have
a dude. Hard to find those dudes. NBA Champion Tough
(50:43):
Juice Karen Butler joins the show. Next. I'll get his
thoughts on lebron on a Lonzo and the Lakers, on
the Oklahoma City Thunder, can they figure that stuff out?
On the Houston Rockets? Are they for real or is
just just regular season? Regular season? Uh six us. We'll
talk the league with Tough Juice in studio next, But first,
(51:06):
all right, So I heard this crazy story over the
weekend about these twins who when they grew up, they
found out that their mom she doesn't know who their
real father is. This just crushes these dudes. So the
brothers sat on a mission to find their dad, and
turns out their mom was a bit wild back in
the day. There are so many options for who could
be their dad, like former NFL player, small town veterinarian,
(51:30):
big city cop, coked out, hedge, fun guy, anyone could
be their dad. They fly all over the country and
these dudes are piecing together clues, meeting up with all
sorts of crazy characters, crashing funerals, picking up hitchhikers, getting
shot at, getting into all sorts of crazy situations just
to find their old man. And then at the end,
it turns out I can't spoil the end of the movie.
(51:51):
This is the plot of Father Figures. It's a hilarious
new comedy starring Owen Wilson and Ed Helms and a
bunch of other awesome, funny people in theaters a week
from today, December twenty. Check it out. It's rated R.
Car shopping can be confusing with terms like dealer price,
liz price, and invoice price. True Car shows what other
(52:11):
people paid for the car you want. You can recognize
a good price when you're ready to buy a new
or used car. Visit True Car and they enjoy more
confident car buying experience. John Ramos continues to search for
the worst holiday music possible. John, do you like country music? No?
(52:32):
I do like country music. Well that's why I play
this because I know you do, so I do. Yeah,
I've heard you talked about country music before. It's not
just about me, Doug. It's about the listeners and about you,
and about Dan and Ryan. Okay, okay, play to the masses.
(52:53):
That's what they told that's exec But it's also played
the hits. And I'm not sure that was a hit. Well,
I'm gonna say it was a hit in the world.
It's just Christmas song done by a group called Loan
Star m M Loan Stars, good Man Lone Stars, very
very good. It's interesting. Um, I'm already there, really kind
of emotional song. That's a pretty good one. Actually was
(53:16):
listening to I'm Already There. It's a a dad calling
home and the kids hopping on the phone. I was
thinking about my wife. Give me the business over working
on Christmas Day in New York, but flying home, be
home Christmas Night, lone star about that. Um, Karen Butler
is gonna join us in the studio probably in about
ten minutes, right ten minutes, and so we're gonna flip
(53:40):
flop some of the things we're gonna do this hour.
Get to Dan buy or find out what's happened in
sports in a moment. But um, we'd like to play
for you a portion of something you've heard or may
have missed earlier in the day on Fox Sports Radio.
We call it all right, what does what does the
Fox say? Uh? Earlier today on Fox Sports Radio, Chris
(54:05):
Carter could be heard, of course. First things first, that's
the show I'll be hosting on co hosting on Christmas
Day Chris Carter, Nick Wright and General Wolfe. First things first,
you can hear it on Serious XM Channel three from
three thirty to six thirty am on the West Coast
six am on the East coast. Chris had this to
(54:29):
say about one of his former teams, the Philadelphi Eagles.
The transition when you take over as the starter is
a lot easier when you get some reps. When the
quarterback get injured during the game. It's different when you
take over just to start. The guy gets hurt after
the game, you don't know, you don't play. But he
actually played in like a playoff, a highly contested game
(54:51):
that had tremendous steaks and had positive results. So seeing
him spread the ball around, um, not not just eyeball
in the number one receiver. You saw him throwing a
couple of different tight ends through to the running backs.
Spread the ball around to the white receivers. This offense
he's very comfortable in. I believe he will be successful
in this offense. The most success that he's had in
(55:13):
the NFL has been in the offense like this. The
skill sets of these players from a throwing standpoint aren't
that different. Now, Carson Wentz is a special athlete. His
ability to run be in the pocket. He's a bigger,
stronger guy than Nick Foles. So those are some of
the things you don't want to have too many quarterback
read options. But I believe the Philadelphia will run the
(55:34):
table under Nick Foles. They will have the number one seed. Look,
everybody keeps trying to talk themselves into loving Nick Foles,
and I think the schedule opens up for them, right
the Giants who stink on the road, and the Giants
are better off losing than the Air winning than the
Raiders who are dysfunctional mess at home. The Cowboys game
might not be important anyway to probably shut their guys down,
(55:55):
especially if you're down to your second stream quarterback. You're
not gonna play your second streme quarterback in in week
seventeen of the season. Uh, even if you have a
week off, you might play them for a series or
two series. But like, what is the point? They're at
eleven and two right now. The only team close to
them is the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings still had the
(56:16):
Bengals at home and the Packers on the road. Assuming
they lose one of those two. Assuming they lose one
of those two, they can shut Folds down even if
they win the next two. But the big thing is
that you cancel their Super Bowl hopes. I don't think
you cancel their hopes. Um. I think you have to
be honest about it and say, like, look, they're not
gonna win because of It's not gonna be in spite
(56:40):
of but they're not gonna win because of Nick Foles.
It's that trailer or tractor type of as a trailer trailer,
trailer or truck. That's what Daniel jeremiahs is like. Carson
Wentz could lead the way, although the defense is spectacular,
running game also solid. Now they're gonna have to pull
(57:01):
along Nick Foles. Can he do it? Yeah, It's been
done before, and it's helped by the fact that the
Saints are gonna have to come out in New Orleans.
The Vikings are starting a backup quarterback, the Rams relatively inexperience,
especially at quarterback. Seattle's all banged up. The Dallas Cowboys
I think, have been exposed some, although that's probably the
(57:22):
team that the Eagles the least want to see in
the playoffs because they would be with their original starting
quarterback and would probably be as healthy as they've ever been.
And they'll play in Week seventeen of the season, um
and in the NFC South. Outside that, yet, Carolina would
have to beat a team be on the road. I
don't know. There's a lot of a lot of question marks,
whereas they have almost all of their other answers. But
(57:45):
I do feel like Philadelphia fans are trying to talk
themselves into liking Folds a lot more than they really do.
When the Eagles were playing well, even with Carson Wentz,
people were sort of looking at their schedule and saying
it was a bit of a soft schedule and not
sure if they were really one of the top teams
(58:05):
in the league. And now with Carson Wentz even out,
who do you think just right now is the best
team in the NFC from top to bottom? Nowas Cowboys
really when they get Zeke back? Yep o, the Minnesota
Vikings all all depends on Minnesota is healthy on that
offensive line, and Minnesota is healthy in the offensive line.
(58:27):
And yeah, Minnesota even with uh uh you know, even
with um case keenum is their quarterback, Minnesota has a
better defense. But and you have two running backs. But
if you get a Zeke Elliott with all of what
cow the Cowboys have, I'd say the Cowboys, let's get
the damn buy or find out what else is going
on the world sports talk a lot of NFL news,
(58:48):
and we start in Jacksonville. Running back Leonard for Netmas
practice again today with a toe injury. He is questionable
for their matchup against the Texans after missing practice all week.
Texans wide receiver d DR Hopkins he was expected to
play against Jacksonville despite a toe injury. Raiders wide receiver
a Marii Cooper is out against the Cowboys on Sunday.
He's dealing with an ankle injury. Sim can be said
(59:10):
for Kyle Rudolph of the Vikings. He's doubtful to face
the Bengals because of that ankle injury, while Saints running
back Alvin Kamara has clear concussion protocol and we'll play
Sunday against the New York Jets. Broncos played last night
and beat the Colts, but lost quarterback Trevor Shimmeyon for
the season. He's going to be placed on injured reserve
because of a shoulder injury. Cardinals are placing running back
(59:30):
Adrian Peterson on i ARE because of his neck injury.
Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Davitsky told the Dallas Boarding News
he will likely return next season. Philly's have come to
terms on a deal with first baseman Carlos Santana. Band
Rate Sports says it's a three year deal where sixty
million dollars. Twin Sun reliever Fernando Rodney to a one
year deal. Angels agreeing with zet Cozart on a three
(59:51):
year contract. He'll move from shortstop to third base while
the Yankees are in the process of trying to trade
for Pirates picture Garrett Cole. According to The New York Post,
what other NBA note dug to pass along? Of course,
tomorrow it's the Thunder and Nick's Carmelo Anthony's return to
Madison Square Garden, but wearing a thunder jersey, Chris stops.
Porzingis questionable for that game because of a sword need. Yeah,
(01:00:12):
you know, it's it's interesting, uh, Like, there's this thing
with Mellow in New York. New Yorkers love Mellow and
I know he got them, you know, back when they
went uh they finally got out of the first round
of the playoffs when he was there. But he his
reputation never really took hits. It was more Phil Jackson's
reputation took hits even after he was traded. And they
(01:00:34):
have a better record right now than uh, than than
the Thunder. But if you're gonna be fascinating to see,
I would guess porzingis plays kind of out of respect
more than anything else. Porzingis coming off a tremendous night
against the Yoke against against the Lakers, uh which he
had a couple of game when he had it called
big Buckets in overtime, Nick's fifteen and thirteen Thunder thirteen
(01:00:57):
and fourteen. Let's welcome in tough use Karan Butler, of course,
an NBA champion and one of the things that you
should know about about all professional sports, but especially the NBA,
like so much of it's about respect and if you
if he walks in any locker room, dudes have massive
respect for Karen Butler, who joins us now on Fox
Sports Radio. Um, okay, let's let's let's start with last
(01:01:18):
night's game and maybe work backwards end of the game.
Like I know, like Lebron, like you can get anybody's
phone number you want, right, you can text Zoe whenever
you want or call Zo whenever you want. But he
did make it a point to go over to him
cover up his mouth. We have apparently some microphone caught
what he said. You know, don't say what I told you,
but you know, just stay focused on your zone or whatever.
(01:01:39):
Was that needed? What what Lebron did? Yeah, you know,
first and foremost, thanks for having me on the show.
I think it is needed because he is the face
of the n b A. He is the you know,
the best player in the NBA. And you know, he's
the guy that you know, everybody strived to. You know,
he's the care that everybody's chasing. He's the guy that's
(01:02:01):
always in the finals. Um, he's the blueprint for success
on and off the court for this generation. So with
that being said, you know, Ball has you know, pretty
much molded his game after Lebron, And who else to
tell you that then Lebron. You know, he's been scrutinized.
He's been under the microscope since the second he came
(01:02:22):
into this game and even before he came into the NBA, yeah,
you know, even before. So for him to understand, you know,
all the pitfalls of you know, being in that position
and to go over there, it was it was it
was a good moment in sports, you know, showing like
just the brotherhood and the camaraderie and how important it
is even though we're all competitive and we're competing on
(01:02:44):
the highest level, but you know what, we're all human
beings too when we see the big picture and you
know what, I want to plant this seed and you
to help you be better going forward and that's exactly
what we saw. You had as tough of childhood as
anybody who made it in the NBA. UM. And yet
you know you've come out the other side as not
just having a successful pro career, but having a successful
post NBA career as well. Um, so you don't necessarily
(01:03:09):
and and and a lot of people who don't haven't
had a father in their life. But like, hey, look
at least LaVar is there, which is true. On the
other hand, like LaVar, sometimes he is there too much
and in many ways can take away from Alonzo's success
or Alonzo's kind of growth here early with the Lakers.
Let me just get your thoughts on LaVar. How how
(01:03:30):
you view LaVar and Alonzo so far in the NBA.
You know what I feel like, LaVar is extremely animated,
and he's a guy that's you know, trying to build something.
You know, he's trying to build a brand. He's up
against many other brands, and you know he's trying to
maximize this, this pocket, this opportunity. You know, as pro athletes. Um,
(01:03:53):
I'll stick with basketball because NFL varies. But with basketball
along career, I mean, you can count it if you
ain't got nothing to do. A thousand days is a
great career in the NBA, A thousand days of basketball,
and he got a lot of life after that. So
like I think LaVar Ball sees that for his children,
and he's trying to, Okay, we got one in. Let's
(01:04:15):
maximize that momentum and build on with you know, Lamello
and the rest of him, you know, getting into the
door and being on this platform and on this stage.
You know, and you know I can't we no one
can really like look in there and tell him. Tell
this man on how to raise his children. He has
some form of success because his his kids are you know,
(01:04:38):
one of one is in the NBA already doing amazing things,
being scrutinized, and he's dere and he's he's a shoulder
to lean on. But I mean, it is what it is.
You know. Wherever they got going, it works, It works
for them. Do you like lines of his game as
it is now? It can get better, you know, And
now now you're seeing him develop on the fly. You know,
(01:04:58):
before when you saw him come off picking rolls, you
saw him go lateral. You know, now you see him
go downhill more, You see him probe more he's snaking
the ball. And what I mean by that when he
comes off the picking roles going downhill, he's vering, he's exploring,
he's trying to get into the paint, create opportunities. Now
you see a more flashyer. Uh you know Alonzo ball,
you know in the game where he's doing lookoffs and
look away. It's not just the picturehead you know, which
(01:05:21):
Jason Kidd was famous for, and that's why the comparison
was drawn so many times. But now you see him
dribbling the ball up the court with speed and pace
and playing with a little more motor behind him. So
I love the development. You know, twenty games and we
we we judged him, and you know, the next twenty
games is really crucial because you know, you want to
see his development, and I think that we're seeing all
(01:05:42):
the necessary things. He's gonna be a really good player.
He really is. He's gonna be a really good player
going forward. Do you buy into the idea that Lebron
is coming to the Lakers? I mean it's definitely an option.
See here's the two things. Lebron Jay is coming to
the Los Angeles Lakers will be huge for numerous reasons
and and if you keep this young nucleus together and
(01:06:02):
then you I mean, whenever Lebron go somewhere, you know
the rat pack is soon to follow. And he's gonna
bring guys with shot makers and the whole thing, and
they're gonna be contended. His his best chance, an opportunity
to win and come to a situation where he can
just you know, dominate will be the Houston Rockets. That
(01:06:25):
would just be amazing because you've got Chris Paul there,
You've got James harden Or, you got the Shooters, you
got the sixth Man and Eric Gordon, You've got all
these guys and these tangibles around them that he can
just go there and wreck shop. Yeah, but I just
one like how I don't even know how they make
that work salary wise? Right, he would he didn't want
to go somewhere. They're gonna make it. I understand, I understand, um,
(01:06:47):
But Houston, like, do you go? Do you go to here?
Like it feels like you only leave Cleveland for New
York or l A. Right, Cleveland is home, like you
only leave for New York or l A. Because it's
about something bigger and oh yeah, by the way, Lebron
has been able to win everywhere he's been. It doesn't
really matter. He left Cleveland from Miami, Yeah, but that
was that was before he had won. Now he's one. Okay,
(01:07:09):
So what about this Houston team? Are they capable of
winning it as they are currently comprised? I don't think so.
I just feel like Golden State is still too good.
You know, you don't have anyone like p J. Tucker
and guys like that can slow down to k D.
But you can't. It's like when you're when you're playing
in in these games and these matchups and the games
(01:07:31):
slow down. You gotta have guys that's a wash that positions.
And what's so intriguing about the Cleveland Cavaliers this year
with a healthy I T is that if you have
a point guard situation where Steph Curry is gonna score
thirty plus, you also have I T that can score
thirty plus. At the two guard position, you have Clay
(01:07:51):
that's gonna lock up and he's a catching shoot one
more thousand players catch the ball, he's gonna knock it down.
A shotmaker, not just a shot taker. But you also
have JR. Me If that can do those things and
then you have the Wane Wade at the two guard
position that can offset that. You got Kyl Corver who
can offset that. So that's a wash, you know what
I mean. So like Swaggy p coming in, that's a wash.
(01:08:12):
Lebron James and and and k D is a watch
at that position because you got a guy that could
score thirty points, get ten rebounds and playing defense in
k D and you got the same thing. And Lebron James.
The reason why Cleveland was so dominant before because Lebron
James was dominating Harrison Barnes and those guys at that
position at the small forward position before. So that's why
(01:08:32):
the move with KD going there was so huge. I
don't see that in Houston's roster. You have a Chris Paul,
you have a James Harden, and then once you go down,
it's just like nobody's going to offset KD. That's karn
Butler tough Jo can continue to join us. I want
to get in with the Oklahoma City Thunder and figure
out if that thing is fixable, if it's too early,
or if it's a just really good pieces that don't
(01:08:53):
fit together all right. Oklahoma City, Uh, struggling so far. Now.
Part of it is and I think you start to
talk about matching up guy for a guy. But one
of Oklahoma City strength is kind of what Cleveland has
where they had a depth of guys and you traded
two for one with Paul George, traded two for one,
uh to get Carmelo Anthony and so now their bench
is depleted and you have three players that have always
(01:09:15):
been the guy, and now Russell has been the guy.
And they're like, you go, no, you go, do you go?
Do you think it's fixable? It's definitely fixable. But when
you saw the trades with Okay, see, you lost, you
lost a lot of storylines, but you gained a lot
of headlines in the trades. You got big names, big
names to come over their superstar talent for all in
(01:09:36):
situation right now, and um, you know, I comme in,
you know Sam Pressy and those guys over there for
you know, pulling that being able to pull that off.
But right now, it's just it's all about, you know,
making it work and sticking to the script. And if
you hear any of those guys, they always plant those
sees at the postgame interviews when they win games. Particularly,
(01:09:57):
you know you hear Carmelo Anthony said, when we stick
to the script, we're good it. What does the script like?
Have that conversation been had already to say, Look, Russ's
number one, obviously, he's the reigning m V p uh
you know, I'm I'm, I'm mellow, I'm I'm you know,
season Vett, future Hall of Famer. I've done all the
score and the most important thing for me right now
(01:10:18):
in my career is just winning. Have that conversation been had?
Are we gonna feature Paul George? Me and my brother
was just talking about that over here. Are we gonna
feature Paul George and let him be that guy that
he can possibly be night in and night out. You know,
he's he's a guy that can facilitate, handle the ball,
do these things, not just to pin down, come off
and just you know, catching shoot guy or isolated guy
(01:10:39):
in the half court pretty much all the time. And
then it takes away from the creativity for other guys
on the team that can just catch and shoot. So
they have to have that conversation and be serious about
it going forward, otherwise you know, it's gonna be a
waste of season. You know they're gonna finish somewhere at
the bottom of the pack and you know, probably get
hoisted out early on. You know, it's it's interesting because
I actually watched Mellow and I think in many ways,
(01:11:01):
like he's trying, like he's out there trying to guard people,
he's trying to move the ball, he's trying to be
more catching shooting. It's just wanting you get to a
certain stage in life. And like he was trying to
guard the pick and roll the other night against Indy
and it was bad, Like he can't, like he can't
do it. He just physically can't do it. And then
even playing offensively and the shooting numbers are down, Like
(01:11:21):
he's just so used to being Mellow, catching the ball,
taking a look, doing his thing, and now he's he's
actually I actually think he's trying to do what they want.
I just don't think that's him. He's trying to buy
in to everything that's needed to you know that he
needs to buy into the move forward and win. And
everyone was saying, well, he probably should come off the bench.
(01:11:45):
Me I'm saying they should have addressed that before the
trade was done, if they if that was something that
you saw in the foreseeable future, because you know that's
something that you see and you like, you know, mellow,
would you be okay with if we pull the trigger
on this deal? Would you be okay lifting your no
trade claws are coming off the bench in the future.
That's something you can't do that now, that would just
(01:12:05):
be the most awkward thing. And you think that the
chemistry is taking a hit. Now, imagine what it's gonna
look like going forward if you had that conversation and
I just it gets to a point to which he's
almost unfixable. Um uh, I want to get to your
your NBA ambassadorship with China and Taiwan in a second. Um,
And Bead's not playing tonight, right, And I think it's
(01:12:27):
he's got it's back now, right, he's had the sore knee.
He's on the back. And you watch this dude play
and you're like, man, when he's right, I don't, I haven't.
I can't remember a guy who could move play like that.
Plus is a big personality which helps live, right, But
how cautious should we be falling completely in love with
(01:12:48):
Joel Embiid because you're like, dude, that thing's gonna break down.
I really do feel like you have to just you know,
take the train of wheels off and just let it
go back. This fall all in love with him because
he's he's exactly what the game needs and been missing.
He he he brings a uniqueness and a flavor to
it that's just you know, just haven't been matching some time.
(01:13:10):
And I'm I'm a huge fan. I love watching them,
uh you know grow as a player, and you know,
when you have any issues, you know, for someone that
had any issues before, you know your back is. You know,
things that lock up and tighten up on you, so
you know you need to you know, get the physical
therapy on it. You have to be cautious about things
like that because one thing could trigger to another. So
(01:13:32):
it's important that you know, you be cautious with the
way that you you know, go out there and perform.
All right, I want to use that and talk about
embat Carl Anthony towns Um. I mean these these young
uh Christops Persingis I have I have not as much
the Greek freak, but but those three young bigs in
a second, uh Kron Butler, Tough, Juice Canna continue to
(01:13:54):
join us course you hear him on ESPN covering the
NBA in a variety of show as well as you
see him on Spectrum covering the l A Lakers, the
NBA champion. Keep joining us. I'll ask I have this
proposed thought on how to continue the growth of the
NBA and and re established the big Man. We'll get
to that next in the doug Otlip Show Fox Sports Tradio.
Love as an army and you can join the fight.
(01:14:16):
Help the Salvation Army fight for those in need all
over our community this Christmas by going to Fox Sports
Tradio dot com clicking on the red Kettle icon to
donate or call one eight three three s. A L
joined doug Otlip Show, wishing you happy Holidays here on
Fox Sports Radio. Corn Butler Tough Juice, NBA champion, author
of the book called Tough Juice, also analyst across your
(01:14:38):
TV dial. Dad Uh his uh, His son's in Racine,
right yeah, j C. J C. Butler Senior, year big
Where's he going? That's a good question. I don't know yet.
You know he's he's bawling right now, though you know
came out the gates forty one. We was in attendance.
It was amazing filling man, just to see you there.
(01:15:01):
What's that? What's that like? Comparing contrast for me the
feelings of your most emotional game in the NBA or
just playing the NBA even you know, you had to
remember you had to watch the NBA Finals with the
knee injury obviously with with the MAVs. But those emotions
to watching your son where like you have so much
private you literally can't do any Like you can't do anything.
It's kind of powerless, is you know what. It's amazing
(01:15:23):
because you know he was prepared, you know, just spending
all the time like uh in the gym, you know,
from you know, playing with the you know, the wire
hangers in the door, bawling up the socks playing basketball
to you know, seeing him now, you know, come full
circle and be on that stage ready for his moment um.
It's amazing to watch as a father. So I'm just
(01:15:43):
you know, it's it's it's no words that can describe
your an NBA ambassador in China and in Taiwan as well.
So you go over to Asia and you kind of
help spread the message of the NBA is incredible fandom
obviously they're like, it's it's it's like people have never
seen before. It's it's it's crazy. It's pandemonia. Like when
you when you arrive in the airports and you know,
(01:16:04):
hundreds of thousands of fans greet you and you know,
follow you pretty much throughout your whole tour in the cities,
you know, four or five cities, jumping around. You know,
it's it's just amazing and just you know, bringing that
the skill set and you know, different courts and gifts
and you know, expanding the game. You know, that's what
it's all about. And I enjoyed doing it. Of course.
Yao Ming came over and though he made it to
(01:16:26):
the Hall of Fame, we never got maybe the most
out of yeah, because his body broke down. Um, and
yeah it was it was a good jump shooter and
probably now he would have stretched his game out to
three now the way I mean, like you know, Brook
Lopez is shooting. Everybody's shooting threes. Now, some of those
two free throws last except for what the heck did
somebody open the door and he didn't even flinch at Okay,
(01:16:47):
So I kind of proposed this earlier in the week,
like I understand exactly what what the NFL did is
what the NBA did. The NFL watched the NBA like
the NBA took away hand checking. Uh. They they're very
loose in their interpretation of moving screens out on the floor,
on on ball screens and the embracing the three point shot.
(01:17:08):
And they're still physicality and low post and they're telling
you spread it out, driving kickshoot threes, or get get
to the rim with two's forget all this when we
were kids throwing to the low post, you know, wait
for the devil team to come kicking around, you know,
boring Nick's rockets, basketball um and so like. Look, it's
been great and the NBA is an a freight train
(01:17:29):
out of control success story with how it's been revamped.
And I think the new schedule helps as well because
guys arrested. Right, the games are just better. But isn't
there a way in which they can protect prozingis Karl
Anthony Towns, Joel Embiid in the low post, so that
we don't completely do away with the big men, especially
(01:17:49):
as many talented big men as there are in the league.
I mean, I just think it's a style like styles
are like generation. You know, like you know, you see
different things. Like for instance, like in in in my era,
you saw a lot of you know, perimeters on the
being in the logo area. I saw it, and then
you saw the bigs. You know, if you had a
(01:18:11):
good big, you saw a big operating on the post.
And then you know, you usually saw the point guard
and pick and roll situations. Now you still see you know,
the guys in pick a roll situations, but as perimeter
oriented and the biggs can stretch out. So I just
think it's just like it's it's a generational thing and
it's a success thing because the Warriors one and you know,
(01:18:31):
copying a style is the biggest form of flattery. So
like you you're gonna see styles adapt to you know
what you've see and has been successful. So now you
have you have a Joel and b you have a
Karl Anthony Towns, you have Anthony Davis, and these guys
and DeMarcus Cousins. That's changing the styles and the games.
And if they're able to be successful, you're gonna see
(01:18:52):
guys you know kind of go back to traditional play
with the big you know operating you know, free throw line,
under Extandard. Yeah, but all these like all the analytics
tell you to shoot threes and not shoot post up shots.
Done that change? Like if just call more fouls in love,
if you just call more fouls, And that's really what changed.
Once you couldn't touch guys, like there's no way you know,
(01:19:12):
the if you couldn't hand check and Alan Iverson, you
can't keep him in front of You can't keeping these
guys in front of if you can't hand check them.
If they cut down the physicality and the low post,
I think that would open up the low post scoring.
All right, So do we have a big in the
game of basketball right now that can force that conversation
and Bead maybe DeMarcus Cousins maybe, but they also shoot threes.
But that just happened like Joel and be the conversation
(01:19:35):
Like he was out two years and then now he
just came. So like now he's successful and we're seeing
the full body of work of him, you know, in
these first games. So now he could force that conversation
if going forward, he's one of the new faces obviously
because he's a larger life character, you know, in the personality,
So going forward, he's gonna be a huge piece of
(01:19:56):
this puzzle going forward to the NBA. Um, okay, give
me the what we we have a tendency to do
in the media and new now being in the media,
you understand this. We've talked a lot about Lebron and
the Calves. We talked a ton about Oklahoma City like
Golden State, and about Houston and maybe about the Sixers.
Who is the player that we should be talking about
that because we work on big topics and big names.
(01:20:18):
Were not paying attention to you right now in the NBA.
I mean, Kyrie Irwin is getting his fair share in
his due because you know, the Boston Celtics have been
extremely successful. I think a lot of people didn't think
that they were. Uh. The Greek freak and the damage
that he's doing. Um, DeMarcus Cousins not getting the recognition,
you know, Uh, having had a playoff experience in his
career and he's on the verge of making that happen
(01:20:41):
this year and making it work with Anthony Davis and
those guys down there with a Rondo that was out
for the majority of the season. But at last, but
not least, you know, a guy like Chris Paul you know,
I've been in numerous situations and so many people, so
many people had spoke on the fact that Chris Paul
in the James Harrent thing would not work because they
(01:21:02):
both ball dominant, and all you see is success, you know,
And I think they need to be applauded and talked
about a little more. All you see is Okay, Levin
in a row, go rockets. No give them they do
because they are making this thing work. And D'Antoni has
done a great job of making them compliment each other.
All right, Karen Butler, who he does an outstanding job
(01:21:25):
ESPN Spectrum and of course pick up his book Tough Juice,
which tells his story from the streets to the NBA
and all the way of course to winning an NBA championship. Man,
You're welcome here anytime you want to talk ball, you
wanna talk anything else. Uh uh, you are more than
welcome to do something definitely coming, you know, right up
the streets. So I can't believe that your son hasn't
committed to Ukono. Man, gonna they're gonna Kevin make it happened.
(01:21:47):
Bro Kevin Allen needs some needs some help. There, needs
some help. What happened? What happened to college? I know? Seriously, right, um?
Eric Dickerson is gonna join us up coming next. We
talked to start about like everyone is paying attention to
Steelers and the Patriots. It's two huge name named teams,
huge name quarterbacks. Five combined a seven combined Super Bowl
(01:22:10):
wins between the two quarterbacks. But those might not be
I don't think they are the most important games of
the NFL weekend. Most important games involved Chiefs and Chargers,
Seahawks and Rams, Panthers and Packers. We'll break down those games,
including Aaron Rodgers. Like I get that everybody wants Aaron
(01:22:32):
Rodgers to come back early from broken collar bone, which
he had surgically repaired, But is that really a good
idea to put yourself in harm's way on the road
against the Panthers. We're gonna come and try and sweep
the leg. We'll catch up with the Hall of Fame
running back from Ramos's l a Rams. Eric Dickerson joins
us live up coming next to the Doug Gottlieb Show,
(01:22:52):
live right here on Fox Sports Radio. What up, Doug
Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Man, I'll tell you what
if you missed Daniel Jeremiah, he was great. You missed
Tough Choose Car on Butler he was great. You miss
Levy on Bell earlier this week, you miss Sam Donald
rule this week? They were great. Download our podcast. It's great.
(01:23:16):
I don't like to use the word great, but those guys,
all of them, brought it phenomenal anyway. UM, online car
shopping can be confusing, not anymore. With True Price from
True Car, you can get the exact price to pay
for the next car. Visit True Card, enjoy more confident
car buying experience. That True Car will bring us an
NFL discussion with Eric Dickerson. The Hall of Fame running
(01:23:37):
back upcoming sometime shortly, surely. But I think one of
the things that is a is true across the board,
and we make this mistake all the time. Sports are
about a lot of things, right, I think we say, Stuart,
(01:23:59):
sports are abouts storylines, but it's really not. There's never
been a storyline, never been a guarantee that's ever played
any sort of part, any sort of part in UM,
any sort of part in who wins and who loses,
not a single amount, not a single thing. What does
(01:24:25):
play a factor? Culture confidence. And here's an expression, styles
make the fight right. Matchups? Matchups? Why Why have the
Patriots consistently dominated the Pittsburgh Steelers and yet the Steelers
(01:24:47):
have always had a great defense. The Steelers have been competitive,
have won their division, They've dominated other teams. Why is that?
And I know we'd like to think it's some mental edge, like,
oh they had the mental ledge like or the Steelers
are based upon the Steelers are always built built, built
with kind of the same defensive three fore front, a
(01:25:10):
zone scheme. They take away the run and they want
you to they want you to throw the ball and
confuse you with a zone blitz scheme on third down,
on third down? Correct? Do you know what the Patriots
have never been. They've never been a run dominant team.
You know what they've always been. They've always been a
team that slices and dices zone defense. So when you
(01:25:33):
look at Tom Brady's record of ten and two against
the Pittsburgh Steelers and you look at their success, is
it like the mental ledge or it's Belichick and his
ability to outdue Mike Tomlins or Tomlin's teams. The Steelers
teams are built with a blueprint and the one style
of that blueprint that it struggles against is the New Patriots, right.
(01:26:01):
I mean that's kind of obvious, um And like you
look at it in in in sports, uh, Louisville when
Rick Pettino is there would consistently dominate Syracuse. And they
(01:26:23):
would dominate Syracuse for a couple of reasons. One because
of their ability to slice and dice Syracuse zone, but
in their own defensive scheming pressure into a into a
half court matchup. Zone always confused the Orange. This was
a styles deal. Styles make the fight. Styles make the fight,
(01:26:46):
and it's a pretty sensible logical explanation. It has nothing
to his storylines or the mental edge of the Patriots
over the Steelers. It's the Steelers are based upon zone
blue three four zone blitz scheme, and the way to
beat the Patriots, the way to beat Brady is to
get to him with four and be physical with what
(01:27:07):
his wide receivers while playing varying styles of man to
man defense. And that's not who the Steelers are, that's
not who they've ever been, and they can't be that
team one week out of the season or one week
out of the postseason. Styles make the fight, and in
this particular style, it's almost always going to go the
way of the New England Patriots. Let's welcome to Eric Dickerson.
Of course he's a Hall of famer. Uh. He's an
(01:27:29):
analyst across on Fox Sports Television and you can hear
him also on five seventy am, our local affiliate here.
Part of the I Heart Family joins us in the
Doug Gottlips Show. Eric, how much in your mind of
the Patriots consistent dominance of the Steelers has to do
with has to do with style? How much of it
has to do with something else? Well, you know, hey,
(01:27:51):
good to man, um just don't match up whale and
they really don't. And you said, it's the style of
of of the defense against their offense or the offense
against their defense. So um, you know the done I
look at the Pittsburgh feels like especially the offense, the offense,
they're they're running football team. That's that's what they do.
I mean. And and you know they have to me,
(01:28:13):
they have great receivers. I think they have the best
core receives in the Naskal Football League. You know Smith
with a B with my Tavis Brian, so they have
they have a good mix there. Their defense sometimes not
match up with the Patriots offense, and I think the
best way to shut down the offense, like with the
Tom Brady is keep them on the sidelines. And how
(01:28:34):
you do that shoot up the clock? You know, Uh,
you don't have to you don't have to take those
those chances going down here. Just be patient. And I
think sometimes in those games they haven't been patient with
the with the Patriots. You know, they try to be
in trying to squeeze it in and you know, and
it gets picked off. Eric Gakerson joining us I also
said earlier that as much as those games are interesting,
(01:28:54):
other games are more important. Like for the Rams, this
is the game you need to win. You go on
the road, seats coming off the loss of coming back
across the country. You're coming off a loss of your own.
But Seattle is a shell of the team that they
used to be because they're they're defensive injuries. Um and
you know, Cooper Cup catches the ball. You beat the Seahawks,
but if you don't, now they've got a two game
lead on you. As you're tied in your own division,
(01:29:16):
it feels like this is a lot more important game.
Maybe not as interesting nationally, but a more important game
than even the Steelers and Patriots game. Oh sure, I
mean this is a big This is a real big
game for the Rams. Uh and the Seahawks. I mean
the Seahawks them at home. Um, you know the let
me look at that football game. But the Rams beat
them in every way except on the go board, and
(01:29:37):
that counts. I mean, when you turn the ball over
five times, uh, you you know, to get blown out.
That would happen in that same week when the Rams
played the Seahawks and Steelers played Jacksonville. They had five generals,
They got be thirdy nine plans got thet to ten.
So uh, it just shows you, you know, when you
when you turn the ball over, it's hard to be
(01:29:58):
a good football team. This team you're playing in Seattle.
You can't come up football over. You know. They got
this twelve man that they were gonna be loud. And
my one knock with the Rams right now, I think
Jared Goff was playing really good football, but he holds
the ball a little too long. I don't think he's
got that feel yet and he can feel that pocket
closing in on him. And here you can't you can't
(01:30:20):
do that because in his defense, Yes, they're beat up.
Let's see how the defense can still get to you?
Uh can? I can I give you another possible flaw
with the Rams. Yeah, didn't it feel like they went
away from running the football? Oh? Man, you're right man.
I said that after the game. I'm like, I understand
like football and Eric, look all due respect as you
(01:30:43):
as one of the all time great running backs, that's
always kind of your default. I can't believe you didn't
say that. Like I'm sitting there going like that, Look,
Sean bag, why are you getting so cute? Run the ball?
You beat you beat me to that. I said that.
I would saying, wow, are we throwing the ball so much?
When I look back at the stats, we threw the
ball forty seven times? Thank you God. Kared, Like, well,
pass you can't do that. You have to run the football.
(01:31:04):
You have to. I mean even last week in the
game last weekainst the Eagles, they got in a situation
where I think I went office, I've got the officer.
The lineman got hurt, and they tried to throw the
ball for the backup lineman and got to got the
ball strip We all of a sudden we would come
to this passing football team in this football game. Man,
we have one of the best money back to football
who's having a great year. Nothing like last is offense.
(01:31:25):
He's not getting hit in the backfield. Man, run the football.
Eric Dickerson joining us in the Doug out Lip Show
here on Fox Sports Radio. Aaron Rodgers is going to
try and ride in on his white horse and save
the Green Day Packers. They're playing the Carolina Panthers. Is
this a good idea? Guy coming off of collarbone first
game on the road against Panthers. Against the Panthers, I
(01:31:47):
would say, no, iladly don't pay the great idea. I
really don't. I'm sorry. I just you know, to me,
I think I think the best quarterback in thea that
for a couple of years, and I just I love
to watch them play. I know they want to try
to make the playoffs, but it was about the tackle team.
Is that's all they have? Is? I mean? They they're
like a blue college football team. Not a lot of
(01:32:09):
not not a lot of Really, I mean I said,
no great player extep Aaron Rodgers and for him to
come back against you know, for me a team that time,
I could say, they're really sneaky good Carolina and they
have a really good defense. And man, I hate to
see him get head again in this football game. But
you know, Harris did the best the other day. He said,
you know when when you get into the game and
get to hit that person, come and get you know,
(01:32:31):
you know, you get into the flow of the game.
That is true. You know when you get that first
get to be ready to go. But you don't want
that first get the two to be something that could
have to cause you to have another and another big injury.
Let me ask you about the Kansas City Chiefs. They
take on the l A Chargers. This is another super
important game because the Chiefs, like the Seahawks, beat the
(01:32:51):
Chargers in their own buildings. So the Chargers like all
this talk about them being a threat to the Patriots
and the Steelers. It becomes mood because they probably don't
make the play offs if they don't win this weekend.
How difficult road win do you think that would be
for this version of the Bolts going against this version
of the Chiefs. Well, you know, and I do like that.
I do like uh the Charges in this football game.
(01:33:13):
I mean, the Chiefs aren't playing like they were playing
you know, five weeks, you know, five weeks to the season,
the first of all weeks of the season, they look
like they were people. And right now, the charges depending
very good. You know, they're not trying to football over.
They're taking the football away on that defense, you know,
with with with Graham and Bolsa. I mean they're they're
they're very tough defense. They can get fresh on the
(01:33:34):
quarterback and you know they can run the football. I
mean they have have to turn the football over two
is something like that. I mean that's crazy. So that's
a very good football team. There's some games, some games
and they look back and they could have been leading
this division easily by two games once the games. So um,
but you know, to get all that saying this, they
(01:33:55):
need to win Sunday that should it comes down to,
you know, in Kansas City, and that both needs of
a fight for their lives right now. So can't luckily
and they gotta they gotta win last week and has
been playing hot for the last couple of weeks. And
you know, um, I think I think it would a
really good football game. I know you said that. You
talked to Zeke in Cabo and that he said he's
(01:34:15):
gonna get two yards. But for people who don't realize, um,
how he's gonna come back, like there there is some benefit,
Like I understand his name took a hit because of
how everything went down, But there is some benefit to
having fresh legs for the playoffs, isn't there? Like for
as a running back, as a guy who's been through it,
even though you'd like to have a better season, how
(01:34:38):
much fresher will his legs be after the six weeks off? Uh?
I didn't hear Elliott oh Man Man, Look, he'll be friends,
but football, you can't get in football shape just working out.
You have to put football, babe playing football. I just
saw the two days ago he's and Kabo for this
(01:35:01):
whole six week suspension. He looks good. I mean I'm
doing him. I mean this this Milt state is good.
He want to just want to get back and play football. Um,
but you you can't. He can work out and run
through all that kind of stuff does, but if you're
not playing football, it's just not the same. I'm telling you.
Anytime you take this many you know week saw an
(01:35:22):
injury can take place. It really can't. I said it
last year. I think when um Lady m Bell wasn't
he had had. I think town held out of us
for the marijuana in this playing. But I said later
on in the season, I said, the injury is gonna
take place in the playoffs. He had growing injury. So
the same thing here with with c I mean, I
hope he doesn't. But it's just hard when you're not
(01:35:43):
doing football. You're not playing football, and right now this
is the time you could be kicking in on off sellings.
Right now, you know your team is playing well. This Cowboys,
that the seven and six, and if they're going to
run and win the rest of the games, they possibly
can make the playoff. Then't easy they really do. They
need him. I think him and Dack worked well together,
and so you know, you can know you books have
to see. A matter of fact, me and I made
(01:36:03):
a bet will come back and that the yards and
he returns. I'll take that bet all day. I'm gonna
take the money from you. I just I'll just bet
you against he said, Okay, So we'll we'll see what
happens with that. We will see Eric. Great stuff. As always,
love your work on Fox Sports and appreciate you being
our guest and Fox Sports Radio. Thank great ud Eric
(01:36:25):

come Nicle home, Ramos, what's your planning on Star Wars?
(01:37:13):
You have a plan yet? Sunday? Right Sunday? You're gonna go? Yeah, Sunday.
I'm trying to figure out if it's early in the
morning before a lot of people show up, or if
it's later on at night when it's like more of
a time to go see it. So I kind of
think you should go later on. Okay, don't like right,
Like it's you're going with your kids, like it's supposed
to be the whole experience. Like, I mean, it sounds
(01:37:38):
good in theory, but in practice, Plus you want one
you want the place to be crowded, right, you want
to experience. Yeah, you don't want to be with four people? Yeah,
and then like we always do popcorn and one kidd
and frankly, it's like the only time my kids get
to drink soda. It's possibly overpriced, so they're excited by that. Yeah, right,
(01:37:59):
and um, I'm only taking one of them, only one
wants to go. Really, Yeah, I was like, I'm asked.
The dude doesn't like it. He doesn't like he doesn't
like people shooting other people, never likes to star wars,
can't can't get into it. And they're lasers though not bullets.
I understand. I've ex tried to explain that to him.
He's like, they're still shooting each other. I just don't
I don't like it. Okay, fine, save me some money,
(01:38:20):
you know. Look, I know I feel like I know
the basics two more things than most people. All Right,
Like you can pretty much ask me stuff and I
can carry on a conversation. But in terms of inside
details to these teams in these big games, we need
some help for that. We don't know everything, but we
know people that know what you want to know. You know,
(01:38:43):
it sounds like you meet a guy. I got a guy.
Manny bons Or joins us RAMS beat writer Calmness l
a daily news plus. You can hear him on our
l a affiliate AM five seventy l a sports e
It knows the Rams. He knows Rams even better than
Ramos knows the Rams, which is a lot which is
(01:39:04):
really well, Uh, Vinny, what's the carry over from last
week's loss to Seattle? Eric Dickerson. I were just talking
and a lot of Rams fans and I'm not a
Rams fan, but I am a Rams I watch every
Rams game. I feel like Sean mcveig is getting a
little too cute with throwing the football instead of getting
back to the core running the football. And he says,
I'll get back to running it more when they go
(01:39:25):
to Seattle. Well, I know that that's what they want
to do, and and it's a little bit deceiving um
with the with the whole I know that there's a
narrative out there. Todd Gurley gets the touches of the game,
and that's not just running the ball, that's throwing the
ball as well. To him. There there's seven and know
when he touches the ball twenty times of the game,
it's easy to say, we'll just give him the ball
twenty times a game, they're gonna win. It doesn't magically
(01:39:46):
happen like that. A lot of times, the game itself
dictates um, you know where things go sometimes and unfortunately
they got down against the Philadelphia Eagles, and on top
of that, they only had plays for the Eagle of
eight five. They doubled them up on plays. It's hard
to just do what you want to do, exactly what
you want to do and dictate a situation the way
(01:40:07):
you want to dictate it. When you're down twenty one
to seven and the other team is one of the
best offenses in the NFL, sometimes you have to change tactics,
and that's what they did on Sunday. They should still
should have win the game. You know, if they make
a play and keep their composure, they win that game.
Even with Todd getting the ball sixteen times rather than
the optimal twenty times a game. But to answer your question. Yes,
(01:40:28):
certainly they want to run the game, but you have
to get the lead to be able to do that
and then dictate what you want to do from that
point on. Pitt buns and you are joining us in
the Doug Gotlip show. All right. Uh, what about injuries?
There was a big one in the defensive backfield. Uh,
give me your sense about healthy this team is coming
into the Seahawks game. Well, it's certainly caught a break. Um.
(01:40:48):
You know, obviously a devastating blow losing Cavon Webster to
achilles tendon injury. He's out for the year. Unfortunately, they
did think that there was a chance that they were
gonna not they were gonna lose Trumaine Johnson, there other
cornerback for this game, because originally on Sunday he goes
out of the game and the word we're getting was
he's going into concussion protocol. There was a miscommunication on
(01:41:08):
that um. As it turns out, it was a stinger,
you know, kind of a head neck sort of an
injury that he's okay from and he's gonna be able
to play Sunday, So they're not down two cornerbacks. That
would have been a devastating blow going into a road
game against Russell Wilson. You don't want to be in
that kind of position. So they kind of break in
that they're gonna get Robert Woods back, their wide receiver.
There's their best wide receiver and most consistent wide receiver.
(01:41:31):
It looks like they'll get their outside linebacker Connor Barwin back.
They're keeping their fingers costs on that. So losing Cavon
hurts dramatically, but they are also getting healthy and some
areas as well. Vinny Buns and your Vinny um. Alright,
so give me your sense of the level of importance
of this game. I think naturally it's not getting to
play it should but it's a game they should have
(01:41:52):
won last time. It's a team they've been competitive against
back when they had yeah Fisher, but more importantly, he
can't follow two games back to them, and that's what
would happen, as they would well even the standings if
they lost this game. This feels like the game of
the year for the Rams. Yeah, there's no question. If
they win, then they have a two game lead with
two games to go, they control their own destiny in
the NFC West. If they lose there in a tie,
(01:42:13):
But the reality is the Seahawks would really be up
by a game because that means that they would have
swept the regular season series against the against the Rams,
so they have all the tie breakers. So you want
to create a cushion here. Uh, you know, obviously, they
just want to get to the playoffs. That's the first
and foremost um. And they can still do that even
with the loss against the against the Seahawks and take
(01:42:34):
care of business the rest of the way. But in
their heart of hearts, they want to they want to
win this division and they want to know. I'm running
a story right now. Last year they played Seattle right
around the same time of year and they literally hit
rock bottom. We all remember Jared Goff getting knocked out
of the game with a concussion by Richard Sherman. They
were coachless, They had just fired Jeff Fisher. They didn't
know what they had in Jared Goff, they didn't know
(01:42:56):
where what direction they were going to go with their coach.
They looked years and years and years away from being
a competitive football team. A year later, they go into
this game with a chance to put a stranglehold on
the NFC West Division. It's a remarkable turnaround when you
really think about it, and I think that that kind
of a statement where they are. They don't want to turn,
you know, last week's lost turn into two losses in
(01:43:17):
a row. They haven't done that all year. I'm feel
good about the rams chances in this game, and I
think they're ready to go, uh to Seattle and win
a big game. At Daily News, Vinnie is his Twitter
handle any bonson you are. Nobody covers the Rams nearly
as well. He's work in the l A Daily News.
Paum on Twitter or listen to him on five seventy
l A Sports. Uh five seventy l A Sports. Thanks
(01:43:37):
so much, Vinnie. You guys gotta have a good weekend.
I gotta go. Tara Sullivan joins us. She's a calmnist
for the Boston Globe and has a great podcast. It's
called Globe Season Ticket Sports Podcast at Globe Underscore. Tera
is her Twitter handle, Uh Tara. How do we view
the Patriots now after they come off a whooping at
the hands of the Miami Dolphins. I don't that the
(01:44:00):
view changes too much. I mean, I think, um, there's
probably a little bit more doubt than usual among the
fan base. But the fact that they didn't have Gronkowskia
I just felt was so enormous in that game. That's
and and that he'll be back this weekend. I think
that changes, um, you know, changes the dynamic obviously for
them and maybe takes a little bit of that concern
out of the equation. What about Brady, Um, Look, this
(01:44:23):
is that was the first time that you could feel like, man,
he kind of looked old. Does he Does he get
any of the blame for how many things went? So
many things that went wrong Monday night? I mean he
has to there were It wasn't just that he was
under pressure. You know that your good point to other things.
He did not look good in that game. He was
throwing at people's feed. He was mistiming some of the
(01:44:43):
long routes, you know, things were not accustomed to seeing. Now.
In the weeks leading into that game, he had been
taking days off practice, you know, with the achilles um
that was bothering him. That is not the case this week.
He was out there for every day, so you know,
maybe there was a little physical thing going on there
is Um, you know, I don't think you start really
panicking about Tom Brady would have to take a lot
(01:45:04):
more games than one big one. But right, I mean
a lot of the blame for how, um just how
poor the offense was. You know, he certainly owned his
share in that game. Kenny Bridge signed for a two
year contract after being cut by the Cleveland Browns. Now,
it should be pointed out, no one, no one uses
the waiver wire nearly as well as Belichick. I mean,
(01:45:26):
other teams in the league. I've talked to other gms
are like, he'll pick up guys, and like, why didn't
we think of that, even though they actually did think
of it and decided to pass. What are they see
in Kenny Britt in terms of role? Yeah, well, good
luck asking Belichick right to get anything illuminating. The decision
is another good he's a good player. He's another good player. Yeah, yeah, exactly,
(01:45:46):
well played. Um. I mean he went to Rutgers. You know,
we know he loves his Rutgers guys. Um. I think
really the huge attraction is how just how big a
target he is. That's the thing that he can't teach
and and and that's the thing that has um you know,
I've kept written in the in the league for as
long as he has been. So I think they're just
intrigued by um, by the size, the type of weapon
(01:46:08):
or option he could provide. Now, I couldn't give you
a sense of how much he's even ready to contribute,
if at all, this weekend. Asking Belichick this morning that
question was you know exactly got that stonewall answer. So,
but it is a very interesting one to watch this
weekend in this particular matchup, if the Patriots find a
way to get him into the mix. Early Tara Sullivan
(01:46:29):
COLUMNUS and a good one for the Boston Globe. Check
out our podcast Globe Season Ticket Sports podcast at Globe
Underscore Terrors or Twitter handle. Thanks so much for being
our gal uh in Newing. That really appreciate it. Thank you.
So you needed a guy, We got you a guy.
You know, I'm looking at these tickets here for Star
Wars tonight. I think I gonna take my daughter tonight tonight. Ramas,
(01:46:50):
are you looking at just general theater? Are you going?
Is it a why do I say? Are you want
to go? But it is an arc light where you
get the seating specific? Are your specific? So it's probably
a little more expensive than I would assume. Oh, Matt
Mattennee if I can get home, there's Mattenee price on one.
But that's a little bit further in the back. But
does it matter, Like not on a big screen. I
think further back better, that's my opinion. This is way
far back. Okay, too far back. Yeah, this is actually
(01:47:13):
on the it is actually outside the thing. Actually didn't
know they had nosebleeds. Like the concession man is like, Ah,
you're gonna have to come down here, sir, I'm gonna
have to come down here. Let's welcome in Dan Buyer,
who won't be going because I saw it last night
and it's amazing. He used to lying. I thought it
was interesting when Roger Goodell suspended Harry Potter at the end.
(01:47:35):
It was amazing. What a twist. Wait, Michael Bennett's not
gotten did not get fined. Did not get fined. Other
players did, remember Sheldon Richardson, Yeah, he got fined about
nine thousand dollars. Quentin Jefferson who tried to go into
the stands, He was doctor nine thousand dollars for unnecessary
roughness for what happened to that guy's beer. No, that
(01:47:58):
was the reason he was leaving the field, is because
of the unnecessary roughness. So he got kicked out. But
there's no word on what Quentin Jefferson may have gotten
from the league in addition to his nine thousand dollar fine.
But Michael Bennett got nothing at all, not find, no suspension,
no find for dibbing at the legs of Brandon Linder
last Sunday in Jacksonville. Seahawks, by the way, have that
(01:48:19):
showed out with the Rams as you were just talking
with Vinny with Seahawks have their own injuries to deal with.
Bobby Wagner a question mark. Officially your your Wisconsin. When
you say Wagner your Wisconsin accident really comes out. It's
only certain words. There's it's been a theme on this
network for a long time on how bag tag all
of those things. That's okay. Bobby Wagner out. Yeah, he's well,
(01:48:41):
he's questionable. K J. Wright doubtful. So the Seahawks could
be down there too, top linebackers, in addition to all
the absences they have in the secondary for that showdown
against the Rams. But Wagner at least it's a positive
sign he's questionable for the game now. Jaguars running back
Leonard for Netmispractice today with a toe injury. He's questioned
bull for their matchup against the Texans, and Marik Cooper
(01:49:02):
out against Dallas. Saints running back Alvin Kamara clear concussion protocol.
He'll play against the Jets. Philly's if Kim to terms
on a contract with Carlos Santana gets a three year deal,
We're sixty million dollars to leave Cleveland for the City
of Brotherly Love. Yankees in the process of trying to
trade for Pirates pitcher Garrett Cole, according to The New
York Post, and he has Doug's Angels signing Zecho's Art
(01:49:23):
to a three year deal. He's gonna move from shortstop
to third because of now the log jam that you've
got of great talent in Halo's uniforms. After look, dude,
I mean, you guy's a shortstop. That means he's got
great hand, he's a he's a good defensive player. I
mean you have and you have the best defensive shortstop
in baseball. Like again, um, you know if the arms, everybody,
(01:49:47):
everybody who they've ever had pitch for them seemingly has
a has arm trouble. Right, But that said, like it's
a it's a interesting way to attack the problem that
the Angels have and which you're just not gonna match
the talent, the offensive talent that Houston has. Can you
play defense pitching and then hope, Mike Trout poolholes hope
they can carry you and Otani and Otani. But I
(01:50:10):
don't understand the Otani thing, like we're gonna d h
him like you already have alward pools. M don't. Really.
The cool thing you can do with Otani is um
potentially if you could find another picture who could play
in the field, you could have him play a position
and then you could take him out put him back
in as a picture. You know, No, he doesn't, although
(01:50:31):
you know, I think Steve Perry should redo Oh Sherry
to Otani in time for the baseball season. Remember that? Yeah,
that's a great song. John Robinson liked it. Come on, Doug,
I don't think you liked this too much. Are you
laughing at how bad the joke was? Honey? There you go? Yeah, music,
(01:50:54):
What do you think was that painful? I think it's
time to get well. We got him five NFL five
college it's five for five, which Doug Godlin, let's go
five all I love that. By the way, I gave
out two college basketball picks Creighton Creton big thirty six
(01:51:17):
point favorite against Maryland Eastern Shore. Take Creighton, and I
like South Dakota State to beat Colorado at Colorado. Colorado
the Course Events Center used to be a very difficult
place to play. Uh those days are gone. San Diego
beat him at home and they got stopped by Xavier.
They've lost a couple in a row. I like South
Dakota State the jack Rabbits to get a big win tonight.
They are four point dogs. Just for giggles, if you will,
(01:51:40):
All right, let's let's get into it this weekend. Um.
I like the Charges to go in the road and
win in Kansas City. There are one point favorite. I
really do. And I know that's counterintuitive because the Chargers
traditionally have had trouble in winning games that they should
win close games against Cancy Chiefs, the team they lost to.
(01:52:02):
I know that they've won four in a row. I
don't think that's a facade. I think that's reality. As
opposed to the Chiefs, who look their win was over
the Raiders. This is more about who the Raiders are
than who the Chiefs were one point games, basically a
pick them, and I just I kind of think the
quarterbacks that I trust I go with with Philip Rivers.
(01:52:23):
So give me the Chargers as a one point favorite
on the road in Kansas City. I've already picked Cleveland
to beat Baltimore and their seven point dogs. My basic
thinking is this, Um, they're trying to impress their new
general manager. Hugh Jackson's trying to impress his new boss.
There's seven point underdogs at home. I mean, the only
(01:52:45):
team in my lifetime that's gone windless was the Detroit
Lions a couple of years ago. Right, So the likelihood
is it doesn't happen again. They've been closed the past
couple of weeks. And the Ravens I always think. I
think there's carryover from that Steelers game, physical, mental letdown
of we're playing Cleveland. We can just show up Cleave.
It's not bad. Seven points is a gift, you meet
seven and a half all over it. But I actually
(01:53:07):
think I would go and go straight up. Cleveland wins
the game this week, wins the game. Um, the New
York Jets are without Josh McCown and I'm not sure
if you've seen. The Jets have had a remarkable season
in that most people thought they'd be lucky to win
(01:53:29):
a game. And they just beat the Chiefs two weeks ago.
They beat in the Chiefs, to beat the Bills, to
beat the Browns. They beat the Jaguars, right, that's one
of the Womans and Jaguars like what? But last week
they lost to dever Broncos twenty three nothing. They have
zero offense without Josh McCown. They've been beating up by
this season. They're going to New Orleans take on the Saints.
Uh and the Saints, I think they're gonna dust them off.
I think it's gonna be ugly. They're fifteen point favorites,
(01:53:52):
and I don't think it's enough. I'm gonna take the
Saints as a big, big home favorite. Oh Green May's
going into Carolina, and I know that people are what
is Aaron right? Why is Aaron Rodgers come back? Carolina?
Pants is pretty good? Like? Look, Carolina easily could have
(01:54:13):
lost the Vikings last week. Um, they lost the Saints
the week before, completely different scheme. I don't know something
about Carolina I can't buy into and something about Aaron
Rodgers coming back I can buy into I'll take Rogers
getting three points three point dog on the road in Carolina.
(01:54:38):
Last pick. Johnny's Rams are going into Seattle. They're two
and a half point dogs. I just think this is
a reputation line for Seattle. Bobby Wagner is hugely important. Like,
so you don't have Bobby Wagner, questionably might not play
Bobby Wagner, Cam Chancellor Cliff Avril, Chard Sherman, I don't
(01:55:01):
see it. I don't see it. Cooper Cup catches the ball.
They beat Seattle last time. I do think the Rams
are better now than they were previously. I think the
Rams win this game straight up as underdogs. Give me
the Rams on the road. There it is five NFL.
Let's go five college five for five with Doug Godley.
(01:55:24):
I have a hypothesis asked why Michael Bennett was not
fined for his role in the fisticuss in Jacksonville last weekend.
I'll share that with you next. Car shopping can be
confusing with terms like dealer price, liz price, an invoice price.
True car shows what other people paid for the car
you want. You can recognize a good price when you're
ready to buy a new or used car, visit True
(01:55:45):
Car and they enjoy more confident car buying experience. Doug
Olive Show, Fox Sports Radio. You like Rascal Flats here, Doug,
little Rascal Flats. Sure, he's got a great voice. I
actually have an interesting Can I give you an interesting
(01:56:07):
Rascal Flats nugget and kind of note? Okay? So, um,
and I don't think we've had him on um, we
haven't had Darius Rucker's I consider him a close close
friend of mine. Um anyway, So Darius used to open
for Um, used to open for Rascal Flats. Actually when
I first met him, he was opening for Rascal Flats
(01:56:30):
and the on course the encore song, they would sing
his Life as a Highway, which they're not. They didn't
originally record that. What's the guy's name originally recorded Life
as a Highway and try I think, um anyway, and
that was for Off the Cars, the Cars soundtrack. They
re recorded that song anyway. Um. Lead singers Joe Don's
(01:56:51):
the lead singer and Jodan Rooney's the lead singer. And
he's got a very kind of high pitched voice. And
it's like one of the first kind of music. One
oh one lessons that I that I learned was that
was that, like, look, it's not just about how well
written or how well produced a song is. That's a
(01:57:12):
good portion of whether or not you have a hit,
but it's also does the song fit your voice? Does
the song fit your voice? And so like he loved
those guys from Rascal Flats, but he goes out to
sing the encore and they're singing Life as a Highway,
and his voice in comparison to Joe Don's voice, like,
(01:57:34):
could not be a worse fit anyway. Just interesting, It's
it's the it's the four three defensive end being called
on to play three four outside linebacker. Tell me some
other stuff to work. All right, let's get too many
stories as we can buyer. We haven't talked a bunch
(01:57:57):
of music. You seem to me Midwestern roots, like old
school rock. Guy, I'm a good mixed Doug. I like
a little old school rock for sure, good old eighties rock.
Like Let's say, let's say, for example, you're driving to
Las Vegas, a right four or four and a half
hour drive, and you have the old things six disc
(01:58:17):
CD changer. What are the six discs? Well, I can
tell you my favorite artist is George Michael Um of everyone.
So the Lamb or Freedom which one oh listen without
prejudice is the best album. But all of that, I
would definitely put in a Tears for Fears album for
(01:58:39):
the cure you get through the cur No no, but
I do lean that way. If I had to go
with a with a rock album, you don't have to
do anything. You had six discs or a drive to
Vegas go, you got two of them. This is this
is really tough. I would h I do. I do
really like Cold Plays X and Y album. It's one
(01:58:59):
of my one of my favorites. The Uh, I know
you don't like greatest hits, but I'm gonna put in
a journey greatest hits for sure, and then there would
be probably appetite for destruction as well. And uh gosh,
I've got the rock. I've got everything covered, um cars,
greatest hits on my way to Heartbeat City. All right?
(01:59:20):
Think you even think of some more as what he
got I got. Seahawks defensive lineman Michael Bennett not fine
for his actions late in their loss to the Jaguars
in week fourteen. When asked about it in the locker room,
he said didn't do anything wrong. Of course he don've
towards the football, which was also towards the legs of
Jaguar center Brandon Linder last Sunday. I honestly think the
NFL twofold one, um, they don't. This is a guy
(01:59:44):
who was selected as their Man of the Year candidate,
and that would look bad after those I don't know
why they select that before the season's actually done right
or for the year is actually done. And I kind
of think they're scared of Michael Bennett. I really do
like the video is bad. It just is Michael Bennett.
The video is bad in Vegas when you saw it
(02:00:04):
come out in totality, and I think after his accusation,
I think the video is bad here it It doesn't
mean that he was trying to take out anybody's knees.
He might have been trying to go for the football,
but you don't do that. Nobody thinks you're gonna swipe
the football. Broncos quarterback Trevor Simeon done for the season,
gonna be placed in i R with a shoulder injury,
and what seems to be Doug something that is just
(02:00:25):
starting to take care of itself with the Broncos quarterback
in position, yep, Trevor Simeon's a backup at best. Big
thing is what do they do with Paxson Lynch in
the off season broadcast? Whether or not terrible, but I
get a sense that they'll be drafting another quarterback after
showing up late today, the Jets announced defensive lineman Mohammed
Wilkerson won't make the trip to New Orleans to face
the Saints. Saints got good news album Kimara gonna play
(02:00:46):
in that game, returning from his concussion. Why do you
think I picked the Saints to win and cover the
fifteen point line. A report from ESPN says that no
matter where lebron goes next summer, he's going to want
max money. Wherever he is at could be bad news
for the likes of Philadelphia and Houston. It would have
to clear some money. But those are the spotsy whiles ago, Yeah,
and then interesting, like he everybody says he wants to win,
(02:01:06):
he does, but he also wants to be the highest
paid guy in the NBA, which he has the right
to be, but it does cross those two places. NBA
Commissioner Adam Silver told the New York Times that the
NFL is more likely to expand to Europe than his
league in the short term because trips to Europe take
out too many days of their schedule. However, when he
came to Mexico City, Silver said, quote, that's a different opportunity. Yes,
(02:01:32):
expanding markets in international countries is well, basically, we've gotten
all the money domestically that you're ever going to make,
so it's not crazy. You think Mexico City. The problem
Mexico City is where do those guys live. There's some
beautiful places that are fairly safe, but you gotta have
full time, round the clock security and that could be
problematic and expensive. Finally, dug on the verge of Kobe
(02:01:55):
Bryant getting two numbers, retired Warriors forward Kevin Durant toldy
let that he was actually a more of a number
eight Kobe guy instead of a number twenty four Kobe Guy.
Durant also said he has another number outside of thirty
five that he would like to wear, but he can't
with the Warriors. That's because that number is no. It's
not Congratulations Mike frances on his great run by the way,
(02:02:19):
um the run would be what number Mike three. Okay, no,
it's not three, it's not one, it's eleven. That's because
Clay Thompson wears number eleven. Okay, one and one. That's
good enough. Congratulations on thirty years. That run coming to
an end for Mike. Francis up and Kevin Durant would
(02:02:41):
like to wear eleven, but can back it out there
and pressed that the press. All right, and I'll en
talk about Francess. My dad was a New Yorker and
we used to go back to New York every summer
and he would rent a car. He rent a car
for a lot of reasons. Driving in the infecting enjoy
driving was one of them, but a good a good
Other reason was he like listening to my can the
dog Francess and I when I first got to New York. Uh,
(02:03:04):
he's very nice to me. And then he had a
run in with my producer. And I always defend my producers,
with exception of rhyme music, I wouldn't defend him to anybody. Um,
but we made amends and I look, Uh, my dad
was proudest of a lot of things I got accomplished,
but being on Mike Show might have been his proudest moment.
UH Mike and the Dog were an absolute institution and
(02:03:26):
they laid the foundation for guys like us. So I
hope Francessa finds happiness in his retirement from w f AN.
This is the Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio,
