Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Sports Boom of America, Doug Godlip Show,
Fox Sports Radio, coving Tea from the City of Angels
or the Rams. I think they just scored again on
the Seattle Seahawks. What's your deal, bro? Kind of feels like, uh,
the beginning of the end or the end of the
(00:22):
end in Seattle. More on that to come. Kyle Rudolph
of your first place NFC North champion Minnesota Vikings will
join us upcoming in fifteen minutes. D'Angelo Williams later on
the show, and Michael Lombardi, former general manager in the
National Football League, will get his thoughts on Patriots Steelers,
on the Packers losing to the Panthers, on the eight
(00:45):
is losing to the Cowboys, and on the inequity of
of punishment in what I think is the worst rule
in sports. The worst rule in sports is not the
rule that took way the Pittsburgh Steelers touchdown from Jesse James.
By the way, I continue to think if your last
(01:05):
names James, you have to name at least one child Jesse,
even if it's even if it's a girl, regardless of
which um and I I love the arguments that people
try to make the sound really smart here, right, they
try and make them sound really smart. They're like, well,
the Steelers could have intercepted the ball way back when,
(01:29):
and none of this would have happened. Well, Big Benefit's
simply been a fade route. None of this would have happened.
Like again, these things are true, and and we'll get
to Big Ben and while why he just I mean, dude,
it's one thing to throw somebody under the bus, but
to throw Todd Haley under the bus and then back
(01:50):
the bus up, roll over him again, and never go like, hey,
you know I was I was driving that bus. We'll
get to later on the show. Antonio Brown gets hurt. No,
Brian Shasier, Come on, dude, we're all aware that the
Steelers lost the Super Bowl, probably when Saser got hurt.
Definitely when when the best wide receiver in the NFL
(02:13):
got hurt. All that said, they scored a touchdown, right, like,
well they should have. They should They scored a touchdown.
He caught the ball, he took a step, he crossed
the gold line. Touchdown. Only apparently it's not a touchdown
because of a rule which has been a bad rule
since it was instituted like, well, it's the Calvin Johnson rule,
(02:36):
which was a bad rule. Well the des Bryant rule,
which was a bad rule. Did he catch the ball? Yeah,
buddy didn't. No, no, no, did he catch the football?
This is what we do as human beings. This is
what we do. Right in our and our effort for simplification,
everything gets increasingly complicated. I mean, look, I don't I
(03:01):
personally don't think it's a good idea these Trump tax cuts,
which may or may not pass. They may or I
may not go through. But what Donald Trump is playing
up is the problem with the n c A. It's
the problem with the NFL, is the problem with us
as people. It was a powerful deal. Did you guys
see the press conference last week last week Donald Trump?
(03:24):
They were like, look, this is nineteen sixties and the
regulation look at now, and I'm sure all of the
rules and the deductions and everything put into the tax code,
all of that was good with really good intentions. And
all we want to do is we want to reward
uh people for buying home. So we're gonna allow them
(03:45):
to deduct not how much they pay on their home,
but a percentage of the interest that they put down
their home like great idea. Now all of a sudden,
like home value sore, and so they cap it out
a million like yo, like a million dollar house in
Middle America is an unbelievable spread. A million dollar house
(04:07):
in Santa Monica is a condo. So now they're gonna
change the captick, gonna lessen regular. But all they have
done is they said, like, look at all these dumb rules,
and people like dumb rules. Let's go with the less
dumb rules, which is what people are saying today and
rightfully about the NFL. So and I point this out
(04:30):
earli than the year, Like, if you have the football
as a running back and you get it at the
one foot line, one yard line, they hand it off
to you, you dive over the pile, you break the plane.
No matter what happens after that, it's a touchdown. Jesse
James gets the ball, he catches it, he takes two steps,
he dives, he breaks the plane, he hits the ground,
the ball comes loose for a second even though he
(04:52):
still has it, and it's not a touchdown. Huh. Like
Like this happened with marriage right Like now you the
whole idea of marriage is a good one right, one man,
one woman, kids, et cetera. Like, well, what if something
goes wrong, Okay, you get divorced depending upon state isn't split.
(05:14):
Do you get to keep them stuff you had before
you got married. How much do you get to keep
you after you got married? What type of divorces it all? Right?
How much that to pay in alimony and palimony all
this other stuff. There's so much regulations, so much red tape.
You gotta bring in the lawyers. They're like, oh my god,
I would rather stay married to her who I hate,
than give it to a lawyer. Right, But the lawyers
(05:36):
are there because they're the only ones who seem to
know all the different regulations which they wrote. It's kind
of what we just said that this is the human instinct, right, like, like,
look on paper, the idea of communism works right, where
we all go and do our jobs, and we all
get paid in stuff that we need, We're all have
(05:57):
equity in the country, and we all work really, really hard.
But what happens is there will be a percentage of
people are like I'm getting paid regardless I'm not working hard.
Then there'll be other people that are high at sers
like I'm killing it. This guy is not working. I
want to get paid more. I want more power, Like
whoa human instinct takes over, right, the human instinct with
with sports, human instinct with legislation. It's all the same, right,
(06:23):
Like the n c A. They have all these they're
just trying they get all these rules, and what their
rules should be is, hey, you know what, don't change
the player's grade, don't pay him money, do the right thing.
If a kid steps out of line, you probably have
to get rid of him. If you can educate him,
keep him on campus, get him a college degree. You
(06:43):
should be rewarded for the more kids that graduate, but
you have to have them graduate legitimate classes, like can
we do that without some thick rule book. It's the
same thing with the NFL. Does anyone not believe, forget
about the rule? Is there anyone on earth who doesn't
believe the Jesse James caught that football? Of course not.
(07:05):
Does anyone not believe that Calvin Johnson caught the football?
Of course not. Does anyone not believe that uh des
Bryant caught the ball against the Green Bay Packers? Of
course doesn't mean whether your team benefited or didn't benefit.
That's not what I'm asking. I'm just asking if you're
playing football with your child or your buddy in the
(07:26):
backyard in a park from Turkey Bowl or when the
Santa Bowl and somebody catches the football, like, do you
go like, yeah, you caught it. How did we get
to this point to which we review to see if
the ball, wait, it moved, I don't think it moved,
didn't move, did not move a right? Did you catch it? Yes?
(07:46):
So what was pointed out yesterday is the dirty little
secret that's not even a secret. In the NFL. They
got a really really bad rule. It keeps affecting important games.
It knocked the Cowboys out of the playoffs. It knocked
the Steve learns from home field advantage. And I don't
know what needs to take place in order to change
that rule. But if yesterday doesn't do it, the only
(08:11):
thing that will end a playoff game in Green Bay
doesn't do it. The only thing I can think of
is it has to decide a Super Bowl. If it
decides a Super Bowl, maybe then they change what is
an inarguably terrible rule. And it's not terrible for any
other reason, then it's not and it's not the same
rule as it is for other times in the exact
(08:33):
same game, in the exact same situation. It's the and
by the way, it's the most guy thing ever. Right,
what is the most guy thing ever? When you get lost?
He asked for help, No, I'm not lost, and just
go in a different way, all right, No, no, honey,
I put it si, I put it on my phone.
(08:53):
I don't care about your phone. I know the way
to go, and you can be completely lost, completely wrong.
You like, no, no, no, I got it. This is
such a guy thing, such a guy thing, refusing to
admit you know it's a bad rule. We gotta change
that thing, isn't If you want to know why, why,
why women should run or should have at least a
(09:15):
portion of the conversation the Nashal Football League. All right, look,
women are gonna here's the problem with you. Put a
woman in charge, and what she's going to do is
not only tell you're wrong, but she's gonna continue to
tell you you were wrong for the next fifteen years.
Remember that time you're wrong about the catch rule? God,
you are, like, yes, I remember, sweetheart, thank you, thank you.
(09:37):
It changed the course of history. Previously it changed the
course of history last night. It's been a bad rule
for years. It's still a bad rule today. And defending
the fact that it's a bad rule, it's fine. You
can defend the letter of the law. But the letter
of laws things, and it's par for the course in
(09:57):
our society, al right, Like we have bad You know,
you can get arrested for public intoxication when you're walking
from a bar to an uber they want to they
can arrest you for public intoxication because you're drunk in
public and you're not a bar. Right, the bar can
(10:19):
be doing their job, Like, sir, you've had too much.
Let me call you a cab. They call you a cab,
you walk out, you're waiting for the cab. You're sitting there,
you're whistling the copkin. Hey man, you gotta move along
from this point. I'm I'm trying gets a luber ossifer. Right,
you can be doing the right thing you get arrested.
(10:40):
It's a bad law. There are plenty of bad laws.
And like, look, if you want to give credit to anything,
like the decriminalization of marijuana is I don't know whether
it's not. You should be legal. It's gonna be it's
being legal in so many different states. And that's really
more case of states like wait, Colorado made how much
money on legal weed? We gotta make money on that, right,
(11:01):
But the idea that you would get caught with a
joint like dude, lock him up, like no, I just
give him a ticket. That's fine. But this is an indefensibly,
indefensibly bad rule. Everybody knows it. It changed who got
(11:22):
home field advantage. You can make all these statements which
are true that the Steelers had multiple opportunities to win
the game and they screwed him up royally. And Ben
Roethlisberg is not taking any credit for the fact that
he called the slant route and he threw the ball
that ultimately got intercepted. And if you're really the leader
of the franchise, leader of as a quarterback, you don't say, yeah,
(11:42):
my offensive cording and I didn't want to do it,
but my forget about all that for just a second.
They ruled it correctly because the rule sucks because he
caught the ball just like Des caught the ball, just
like Calvin Johnson caught the ball. Cal Rudolf joins the
show up coming next get his thoughts on how this
(12:04):
team has been able to withstand a bevy of injuries,
and what it was like yesterday when Teddy Bridgewater came
back in the game for the Minnesota Vikings. If you
if your check engine light comes on, don't let your
car suffer. Head to auto zone today the auto zone
(12:24):
fixed finder can check it on the spot for free.
And how does that work? That's crazy, sounds awesome. It
could be something serious or something simple like a lose
gas cap get in the zone auto zone. Yeah, you
want to be that guy pulling like sir, you gotta
lose gas cap. Scot feel like going to do cal
Rudolph next. Car shopping can be confusing with terms like
(12:45):
dealer price, liz price, an invoice price. True Car shows
what other people paid for the car you want, so
you can recognize a good price when you're ready to
buy a new or used car. Visit True Car and
they enjoy more confident car buying experience. Doug Ott Leave
Show Fox Sports Radio can count on me? Saw Star
(13:06):
Wars over the weekend. Did you watch it? And I
enjoyed it? I thought it was fantastic, fantastic, it was fantastic.
I thought it was fantastic. It was wonderful. Yes, that
was a great movie, really really good. Um, I mean,
had you know, like my son, I've I've told you
(13:28):
my son doesn't like the people dying, you know, but
it does have some of that. It's got some great
action scenes, got some deep some interesting storylines, plot twists
if you will. That was great. It was really good.
Go out and see it. Um, My two of my
children and my wife saw Ferdinand. You're familiar with Ferdinand,
the uh, the old bull, fernand the bullish old children's book. Loved, loved, like,
(13:56):
incredible message, incredible movie. There are some great movies out there.
It's there's some similarities there to the National Football League
and people like, oh, the ratings are down for the NFL,
Like okay, but I mean, was there anything better than
the end of the I mean the lat the fourth
quarter of Steelers Patriots, and then the fourth quarter of
(14:17):
Raiders Cowboys, Like wow, was that great? It was great.
It's people are down on movies like, oh, there's nothing
good out like I just named for wonder spectacular, Coco spectacular,
Star Wars spectacular, Ferdinand spectacular. All except for Star Wars
(14:38):
are our child appropriate and they're good movies. You know
who would care about that is Kyle Rudolph. He's got twins.
They rule his life more so than National Football League.
That's okay, Christmas upcoming. I'm sure there's just a gift
upon gift upon gift. Kyle Rudolph is a Walter Peyton
Man of the Year nominee. Today he's hosting his annual
Rudy's Red Eye Express as uh more than two dozen
(15:00):
patients and their families from the University of Minnesota Masonic
Children's Hospital visit the North Pole and he joins us
fresh off yet another wind clinching an NFC Nors Championship. Kyle,
how are you a great man? Um? Your kids aren't
old enough to have the true Christmas wish list? Are they?
Do they have? They're they're not there yet, like I
want to I want this, I want that yet? Are
(15:22):
they right? Not at all? Um? You know they're still
at that age where they're more excited for the boxes
and wrapping paper that come with the present. No matter
what you get him, it seems like afterwards they're just
constantly playing in the cardboard boxes and wrapping paper. What
was your what was your Christmas? Tradition as a kid
that like this one sticks out my mind. This is
(15:43):
something we always did well. The biggest thing for us.
We always went to Mass on Christmas Eve and not
Christmas Day. Uh, and then we would do my dad's
side of the family after Mass on Christmas Eve. And
then I always remember, um, you know, like just bagging
my parents, like when was the time to go home,
and we need to go home and go to bed
so Santa can come, uh, and then wake up, open
(16:05):
presents from Santa, get around and then head to my
mom's side of the family for Christmas Day. It should
be a good one this year as well. Obviously, games
a bunch of games on Christmas Eves, a little bit
different schedule. Um, what what was that like yesterday? I
mean like, look, you guys put a just a whooping
(16:26):
on the Bengals. And when the news came out about
Marvin Lewis, obviously it seemed to change the temperature. You
could go either way with with with them. But take
me inside the dome when Teddy Bridgewater took the field.
What was that moment? Like, oh, it was incredible. I'm
just glad that that glass roof that they put on
their stayed in tact because that place got pretty loud,
(16:48):
and rightfully so, everything that he's been through over the
last fifteen months, to be able to go back out
there and take the field in an NFL game was
was pretty special. Uh. And the whole reason why, especially
is because of the type of person that Teddy Bridgewater is.
I mean, when you know, the other two quarterbacks on
the roster are on the sidelines, giving him as big
(17:09):
of an ovation as anyone. Uh, it speaks volumes of
the type of person and the type of character that
Teddy Bridgewater has. Yeah, I mean you're you're talking about
Case and of course Case Keenum is still the starting quarterback.
What's like lost in your team's dominance? What's lost in
Teddy coming back is Case was twenty of twenty three
two touchdowns. Know, in receptions like I'm not sure you
(17:30):
could play much better than Case Keen and played yesterday,
And once again, he's not really a storyline in the NFL?
Is that what? What's what does that like to to
experience that type of of dominance and yet the fact
that it doesn't get mentioned all that much because of
so much other stuff going on. Well, I think he
likes it that way. You know, he's kind of been
(17:51):
counted out his entire career and he plays with that
chip on his shoulder. Uh. He he likes flying under
the radar. And for us, he's been huge all year along.
He's played really well and he's definitely been a key
part of the reason why we've been so successful as
a team. You know, you go back and look at
last year, and we had such a dominant defense and
they kept us in a ton of games and gave
(18:13):
us opportunities to win games. But you know, you fast
forward and look at this team this year, and yeah,
our defense is playing as good as anybody. But uh,
to compliment that, we have an offense that goes out
there and scores points, and that puts a lot of
pressure on defenses, especially if we get leads, uh, and
then our defense can go out there and get get
after opposing quarterbacks. How much of what happened in Carolina
(18:36):
the week before was a product of Hey, our offensive
line was banged up, But how much of it was, Hey,
we just didn't we didn't play well, We didn't we
didn't play assignment football. Oh, I'd say it was acent
that we just didn't play well. Um, you know, we
did things that were uncharacteristic to our success. We turned
the ball over three times. Um, you know, we didn't
run the ball very well. And you know that wasn't
(18:57):
that we had guys that weren't capable. We just weren't
executing and you know, weren't being fundamentally sound like we
had been the last eight games when we rattled off
that eight game win streak. But you know, you never
want to say there's moral victories, and you know, we
obviously wish we would have played better, but you know
that losses came at a good time for us. It's
(19:17):
much better to have that in the middle of December
than in the middle of January, because you know, after
that January loss, we're having exit physicals and exit meetings
and you don't get an opportunity to come out like
we did this week and corrected. Cal Rudolph joining us
in the Minnesota Vikings dominant win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
They have on on Saturday night. Remember they play Saturday night.
This week they play the Green Bay Packers. Are coming
(19:40):
off a loss and they need to win the last
two if they want to keep any hope of getting
the playoffs alive, and like, look, you guys are still
playing four home field advantage throughout the Giants could not
finish the deal and the Eagles remain at twelve and two. Uh. Look,
you you're a vet. You've been in this while. You
know that it's great to be sharp and it's great
to have home field, but it's even better and you
(20:00):
have all of your guys if if you were at
if coach Simmer comes to he was like, Kyle, how
should we use the guys in terms of using the starters,
using the backups? Do we go for wins these pet
last two weeks? What do you what would your what
would your advice be? Well, I just echo exactly what
he just told us yesterday in the locker room. And
you know, we accomplished our first goal year, and that
(20:22):
was to go out and win the NFC North and
clinch our spot in the playoffs. Now it's about playing
for a seed. So for us, we have a unique
opportunity that you know, really no one's had in the
history of this league to make everyone have to come
to us and come play at us Bank Stadium, where
it's very loud, uh and very tough. On opposing offenses
(20:42):
to go against our great defense. So it's important to us,
you know, we want to make sure that it's extremely
difficult and we want to make everyone come here to Minnesota.
Cal Rudolph joining us in the Dug Gottlieb Show. Um,
I'm sure you got home and watched, uh some of
that Steelers game. What were your thoughts on the call
that that look change the game? Jesse James catches the ball,
gets two feet down. Nobody argued that, but once he
(21:04):
crossed the end zone, he hit the ground and the
ball comes loose and they said he didn't complete the
process as the guy who plays the same position in
the same sport. What was your reaction to the call. Well,
that's you know, you have to go by the letter
of the law, and you know everyone wants to argue
what is a catch? And you know, obviously if we
were playing in the backyard and he caught that ball,
no one would have said that it was incomplete. But
(21:27):
in our game, you have to make it black and white.
There can't be gray area. And the black and white
is that if you possessed the ball into the end
zone and you go to the ground, you have to
hold onto it. And you know, we had a similar
situation last week in Carolina with Adam Seeland in the
back of the end zone and if you ask ten people,
ten out of ten people are going to say that
he caught the ball. But according to the letter of
(21:49):
the law, you have to possess the ball when you
go to the ground, and he didn't do that. So
I think it's the only way to go about it.
It has to be black and white, and unfortunately, that's
that's the world that we live in as pass catchers.
So I think one of the things that are coaching
staff does a great job of is educating us on
that and you know, trying to put us in that
(22:11):
situation so you know, when that time comes, we try
to be more prepared. Listen, I understand that. I respect that,
right like the Jets are sitting there going, hey, Austin
Severian Jenkins, that's two wins we could have had when
the exact same thing happened. You brought up feeling that
changes home field advantage for the NF You win that
game the same record as the Eagles right now with
the chance to have home feel advantaged throughoute, Like you said,
everybody come to us bank. But the reality of it is,
(22:33):
everyone does think he caught the ball. Everyone does think
that Adam Dealing caught the ball. Isn't that what it's like?
Aren't we over complicating something that's very very simple? Absolutely? Um,
I completely agree with you that we're over complicating it.
But I think in order to make it where it's
it's black and white and you have to draw the
lines somewhere. Um, that's the line that we've drawn in
the stand and just you know, made it the point
(22:55):
that if you go to the ground, you have to
hold onto the ball. Um. And that's about as as
best as I can explain it. All right, So so
today you're having this awesome event the Rudy's ready expressed.
Two dozen patients and their families from the University Minnesota
Masonic Children's Hospital. I know you spent a lot of
time there. They're going to visit the North Pole. Um.
(23:16):
Who who's going as Santa? Like? Is it do we
have a Santa Santa? Or is it Kyle Rudolph Santa? Like,
what do you mean coming? Yeah, he'll be there. So
it's it's the real Santa with the last name Hudolf.
You got pretty good connections. So, uh, you know, I
called him up and told him that we're gonna bring
some kids up to the North Pole, and you know
he opened his doors to us, and you know we're
(23:38):
gonna We're gonna head on our way up. There some
some great people involved in this, and you know I
wouldn't be able to do all this on my own.
And it's an incredible night for these patients and their
families that Masonic Children's Hospital, and of all the things
that we do, I think this is my favorite event.
It's awesome when you see the kids faces and you
know their their experiences at the North they never forget.
(24:02):
There's there's no doubt about it. Hey, dude, listen, congrats
on what has been an outstanding year already. I know
you still have two more regular season games to play
and hopefully, uh but three. We you want three postseason here,
right if you get to buy you want three postseason games,
and maybe all three you can you can sleep in
your own bunk, but we'll we'll see how it goes
in the meantime. This is a great thing you're doing.
(24:23):
And good luck in the Walter Payton Man of the Year.
I know you're the the Vikings nominee. Well, your finalists
will see if you win the whole thing, of course
you get recognized Super Bowl. Appreciate you joining us. Thanks
thanks for having me. All right. That's Kyle Rudolph. Good dude,
and like he basically he's like, look, we know the rule.
It's bad, bad rule, but that's the rule, and you
gotta bide by the rule. I just I don't understand,
(24:44):
like everybody thinks it bringing Dan Buyer, I mean, am
I wrong here? Dan? Like, I look right not off
on this thing? Right, I thought Kyle Rudolph put it, Well,
everybody knows the rule. Now, while we may think that
it was a catch, if you know the rule, then
(25:04):
you gotta hold on to it. We've seen it enough,
I mean to have us even question it, Doug. Isn't
it the same argument every single time? I mean, it's
if you know the rule, hold on on the football. Well,
it's weird about it was, Um, you saw how the
Packers lost on that last fumble. What's the name of
the young wid Geronimius, which is a great name, by
the way, right, Geronimo Allison, Like, what an amazing name.
(25:28):
Mr and Mrs Allison whoever you are, What a great
job you did. I that's a that's a head turner.
Name so Geronim Willuson catches the football, takes two steps
and then gets the ball and knocked out of his hands.
That is a fumble. He didn't necessarily complete. He didn't
complete the move really, But you know, like the rules are.
My thing is, the rules are different for different spaces
(25:50):
on the football field. I don't like that one. It was.
It was quite a week fifteen, to say the least.
It ends tonight with the Falcons and Buccaneers. Eight thirty
Eastern Time. Steelers wide receiver Antonio Ron calling his caffe
injury a minor setback. In a tweet sent out this morning,
ESPN says he could return for the playoffs, but we'll
miss the rest of the regular season. Raiders tackle Donald
Penn done for the season with a foot injury. Well,
(26:12):
Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott is eligible to return to
the team today from his six game band NFL Network
ads at the ankle injury suffered by Jaguars wide receiver
Marquise Lee not likely to keep him out of the playoffs. Yesterday,
Jeez yeah to seven against the depleted Texans team. Look,
I get to the Texans suck. Okay, I'm not not.
(26:32):
But the fact is, after the emotions that they expended
and the whooping that they put on the Seattle Seahawks,
um No letterd Fournett and Leno Leonard Fournette, you would
have expected them to struggle a little bit with success
and they did not. Like they're getting better. They're getting better.
They are. They are a team that I don't think
anybody wants to see in the playoffs. And I think
(26:53):
that they could be that team that you know, we
think it's a given that the Patriots and Steelers are
gonna just face off in the a f C title game.
That so fast, let's see about that. I will see
Lakers guard former Lakers guard Kobe Bryant get both Jersey's
retired tonight in a ceremony against the Golden State Warrior.
Like really like both numbers Kobe, Like I love like. Um.
(27:15):
I'll tell you what I know about Kobe, Like I
know how he is actually as a parent, I'm blown
away by my daughter's friends with one of his daughters,
and she's like she's really a sweetheart. She had as
a sweetheart, and she doesn't get caught up in all
the Kobe stuff, and Kobe doesn't. She's not allowed to
buy her dad's shoes until she can actually buy pay
(27:36):
him with her own, with her allowance whatever. Like it's
got to be hard on some level, the first world problems,
but still be hard to be a kid of of
Kobe Bryant living in southern California. He hogged the ball,
why not hog Jersey numbers? But he was I'm I'm
with you. I was never a huge Kobe guy. Like,
he's never my favorite player. I love his competitiveness. I
(27:56):
love the fact that he worked and worked in his
game and his desire to be great fundamentally in terms
of his his pivot. I like all that stuff. He
was not my favorite player by respect him. But two numbers, right,
Like did did the Bulls retired number forty five? No? No,
Michael Jordan war forty five. He came back out of retirement,
didn't win a title with forty five, but he wore
(28:18):
forty five. Like I don't understand that pick a number
or tire that one number. I I agree with that
for sure. Villanova in Michigan State still won two in
the ap top Arizona State jumping up to number three,
leap frogging Duke. Mhm um yeah, Arizona State actually struggled
with the success little bit struggle with Vanderbilt, but super
(28:38):
talented team that can really run up and down. They're
not better than Duke. They played Duke today. You're gonna
take Duke to win the game. So it's kind of
silly how rankings work and which to state? Have you
have you seen Trey Young play? Have you guys seen
this kid, Trey Young play? Anybody buyer? Have you? I
watched a little of the game on Saturday. State Oklahoma
or Oklahoma winn and beat him Downtown Wichita hit twenty half.
(29:01):
So he's a freshman. His dad rayed for Young played
it was an all Big twelve player playing at Texas Tech.
I've known Ray obviously since we played against each other.
And he's from Norman McDonald's all American. Could have gone
to Kentucky or Kansas and uh instead uh stayed at
home played for Oklahoma and look, he's not Steph Curry,
but his game is Steph Curry like right where he
(29:22):
creates shots himself for others as ridiculous range kind of
funky looking shot in terms of where he shoots it from.
But man, is he fun to watch. I mean, he
is fun, fun, fun to watch. Uh. Look, I don't
know if you remember how it ended with Pete Carroll
at USC but it fears feels eerily similar to how
(29:45):
it's ending with the Seattle Seahawks. All right, Like the
Seahawks got their asses kicked yesterday, I mean, the Rams
came in Ramos. You I know you watched the game
because a huge Rams fan. I did. I got home,
I watched Star Wars at early, got home just in
time for kickoff one. That's a great that's a great plan.
(30:07):
I did the opposite yesterday. What I did was, I, um,
we watched a little bit of football. Early football in
the on the West Coast kicks off at ten. We
watched football from ten to noon, and then I shut
everything down in terms of social media, and I recorded
Red Zone. I recorded all the games, and then I
came back at night because we had two a U games,
and then we went to see the movie and had
(30:29):
Jamba juice for dinner. Came back and I watched the
second half of the Raiders Cowboys game, and then I
watched all the other games on red Zone and then
watched the Steelers Patriots. Watched the entirety of that game,
and I watched the Rams game. It's an instant, entirety.
And I don't know if you felt this way, but
(30:49):
remember the first or second drive, Cooper Cup had a
drop right around the ten yard line, was gonna be
a first down, gonna be a first round on third down,
and if you if you watch the Rams Seahawks last
time around, Cooper Cup dropped the ball in the end
zone and otherwise the Rams would have beaten the Seahawks
going way back when the Seahawks were healthy in Los Angeles.
(31:10):
And when I saw that drop, I was like, bad feelings.
I got really really bad. Did you have this exact
same thoughts I did? And then they talked about how
he's from Washington and he has like over a hundred
people there watching him, and I'm like, oh man, he's
probably nervous and it's gonna be a long day for Cooper.
But it wasn't. It was not. Um they were up.
I'm gonna say they were up one day of forty
(31:32):
and nothing, but forty or forty two to nothing, I
think so I I don't exactly but they were up
by at least thirty five or more I believe. I'm
not exactly exact score. I mean like it was a
turn them off sort of game, and some of it
is look that they've made the classic mistake. And by
then it was it was forty to nothing. Yes, it
was forty two. Like I looked up and I was like,
(31:53):
oh my god, it's forty The Seahawks are getting beaten
at home by the Rams forty to nothing to nothing.
And the Seahawks have made they made a couple of
they try to fix things on the fly, and it
hadn't worked, right. I don't know if you saw this
(32:14):
quote from Pete Carroll, uh, but he said that, um
he said that the Sheldon Richardson and what's what's my
man's name we picked up from Dwayne Brown from Texas,
Like hasn't worked yet, right, Like we hadn't worked yet.
It ain't gonna work. Like they went out and overpaid
(32:35):
and traded for two guys that their other their previous
teams didn't want Dwayne Brown because the contract hold out,
And they found a way to kind of navigate a
bad season, a bad offensive line without him comes back,
it doesn't get along with ownership over the McNair comments,
and so they jettison him. Sheldon Richardson that they were
trying to get rid of him with the Jets. So
(32:57):
they take somebody else's problems and sure enough it has
a solve their problems. But like that beating was reminiscent
of when Jim Harball kind of ended the reign of
terror of USC in the Pack twelve and did the
what's you know? That was the what's your deal? Bro? Handshakes?
Remember that game when they were like, I don't know,
I'm gonna say, thirty two point underdogs in the coliseum.
Kama came in and kicked the hell out of him.
(33:19):
Same thing, and it was the same thing, and that
Hardball just ran the ball right at them and at
some point there was quit in them. And it's the
it's the same deal. It's the same deal with the Seahawks,
like it was Todd Gurley left, Todd Gurley right, Todd
Gurley catching the ball in the backfield. That was that
was the that was the official And last week was
(33:41):
the unceremonious and where you know we had on uh,
we have Malie Jackson and Lee Jackson's like, yeah, we
punched the bully in the mouth. Now everybody knows the bulley.
The bully can't fight anymore, all right, the bully is
washed up. This is after Tyson got knocked out by
Buster Douglas. That's what this is, yor you're a you're
(34:06):
a Seahawks fan? Am I wrong in anything? Like? I
know they have injuries. I understand, and Bobby Wagner did play,
but they have massive injuries. But this feels like this
is the end of this run of the Seahawks. Yes,
I dog. I could go on for fifteen minutes, but
I will just say yes, okay, good. You know we agree.
I don't always agree. We agree. Use the Indas card
to determine a first down, big deal, a little deal,
(34:28):
or no deal. I'll tell you next. Online shopping can
be confusing, Well not anymore. With True Price from True Car,
now you can know the exact price you'll pay for
your next car. So visit True Car and enjoy more
confident car buying experience. Doug Otlive Show, Fox Swords Radio,
Ramos on the ones and twos. All right, let's get
(34:49):
some It will be a very Merry Christmas in Caroline.
I got some breaking news, Dan byro what he got
breaking news from Fox Sport. The NFL is suspended Panther's
linebacker Thomas Davis for two games for his blindside hit
on Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams during yesterday's contest. Now,
(35:10):
Davis was fine forty eight thousand dollars for a helmet
to helmet hit earlier this season in a game against
Tampa Bay. And remember Adams suffered that concussion what he
was hit by Danny Trevathan in a game against the
Bears earlier the season. Thomas Davis suspended two games, is
expected to appeal that suspended repeat offender. And it was
clearly helmet to helmet and it was it was the
(35:31):
only thing he didn't do worse than Juju Smith Schuster
was he didn't stare down at at Davante Adams after
he hit him. But that was that that's the exact
type of unnecessary that's the that's unnecessary roughness, right Like
you can hit a dude when you're when you're when
he's not looking um and you get an interception. You
can hit him in the middle of the chest right,
(35:53):
even if he's not looking at him in the middle
of chest, it's gonna hurt. But going helmet to helmet,
going up with the shoulder, you were trying to take
him out and he did, and so now he'll be
out to games um, which is going to hurt the
Panthers because he's a leader, a very good tacklic even
though if he doesn't run nearly as well as as
he used to. But let's get to a game bag.
(36:17):
This is game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show. A
what do you got there, big boy Doug, we have
got big deal, little deal, no deal? Fire. How about
what you got there? Man? You know, big boy Doug
just you know, just saying, uh, just kidding. A big deal,
(36:38):
a little deal or no deal. Let's talk about the
fall out of this, Davante Adams said. Adams tweeted yesterday,
I'll never understand it. Game is already dangerous enough, and
we got Pro Bowl players out here head hunting and
saying they didn't mean to hurt me. And I actually
tweeted that this morning. Davis responded, I understand your frustration.
I apologize. I truly respect you as a player, and
I made a mistake, and then Doug. There was Redskins
(37:00):
linebacker Zack Brown who tweeted to a Pro Football Talk
tweet tell him don't play because I'm always head hunting.
This is a big deal. Little deal and no deal,
that's a big deal. Like you just like this is
this is motorcycle guy going like why they make us
where a helmet? I want to be free? It was like, yeah,
I do. Guess what. I don't want to pick up
(37:21):
your brains off of the four oh five. Okay, al right,
Like if you're not smart enough to understand that if
you get a concussion, nobody's saying you can't hit somebody
in football. No one ever said that, genius, But they
said is what I'm not looking and you're gonna block
me and you don't even need to block me, try
(37:42):
to not try and take my head off and nearly
decapitate me. I'm not asking a lot here. This is
a big deal because a lot of football gods. Cool. Hey,
if you know what, don't play football. Like, no nobody
said they want to play football. That's not football. Anybody
who told you that's football, is that taught? Do they
teach you that as they do you have a terrible teacher.
(38:03):
Does do you think people teammates players get jacked up
when they see that hit anymore like ten years ago?
Everybody who I think they did at the I think
they did the Juju Smith Schuster one because it was
Vontes perfect and because he didn't hit he didn't hit
his head. He hit him in the middle of the chest, right.
But I know, I don't think there was wolfing over
that one. You can end a deal on that end
(38:25):
by one, Yeah, for sure. Big deal, a little deal
or no deal. That An NFL spokesperson says referee Jean
Sterritor was within rules to measure a first down with
the fold of the next card during last night's Cowboys Raiders.
Now he said, I think it's a I think it's
a little deal. I think it's the NFL covering, he said.
He just used it to reaffirm what his eyes told him.
(38:47):
I kind of think in the reality of it, it's
no deal. Right, I've seen that before. It works, it
moves a little bit. First down again was the first down? Yes,
that's it. That's all you need to know. Jack tel Rio,
big deal, a little deal or no deal. That Texans
head coach. Bill O'Brien says he will never quit or
resign as head coach. Yeah, that's a little deal. That's
(39:09):
I want to get paid every penny that I'm out
Texans are foreign tan O'Brien has another year left on
his contract. Of course, he's gone through quarterbacks left and right,
whether it be his fault or not. And I don't think.
I don't think it's it's not his fault that Deshaun Watson.
They had turned the corner when Deshaun Watson was their quarterback.
But I I do think the fact that they haven't
and they won the division a bunch of times, but
(39:30):
they haven't been able to solve the quarterback thing. Some
of that was his last quarterback broadcast, while it was
not his not his choice, So it's a hard deal. Finally, Doug,
we touched on this a little earlier. But big deal,
little deal or no deal that the Lakers are retiring
both of Kobe Bryant's jersey numbers tonight in a game
on a Monday against the Warriors in December. I think
(39:50):
it's a I think it's a big deal. I think
this would be a big thing. Um, I do think
he's incredibly well respected on the league. In fact is
the Warriors are paying homage to him, and it's two Jerry,
He's I don't remember anybody ever having to jersey numbers
for time. This is game time on the Dug Gottlieb
Show Doug Gotlib Show, Fox Sports Radio. The play everyone's
(40:16):
talking about is Steeler's Patriots catch or no catch. But
there was a dumber rule that was exposed in an
equally important or close to important game last night. By
my estimation, it's actually the worst rule in all of sports.
I'll get to it next in the Doug Godlier Show,
(40:38):
Who Doug Godlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. It's really easy
to find the dumbest rule in college basketball, really really easy.
I think I found the dumbest rule in baseball. I
don't know abou dumb rules in hockey because it was
(41:00):
dumb to have so many hockey games? Is that dumb
rule getting getting hockey? Guy? Um? And last night was
the dumbest rule in football. Now, the dumbest rule in
football is not the catch rule. Hey, that's just that's
just too many details, too much stuff going on alright,
too many issues. By the way, people are having an
(41:21):
issue with jeans sit statour breaking out the the double
folded paper like, I actually think his explanation was perfect.
It looked like it was a first down. It looked
like it was past uh the level of of the
yard marker. But like, why eyeball it? You didn't have
a slide ruler, you didn't have a yard stick. Well
(41:43):
you did have was a piece of paper in your
back pocket. You running down, You're like, yep, that's the
one first down, first down. Dumbest ruling baseball, John is
what what do you think it is? I think I
found it, but you can can you think of dumb rules?
Like the infield fly rule? Is there? No? I think
(42:05):
I think it's a smart rule. Right, It's like, okay,
case it's a little pop up in the infield, and
I have runners at first and second where they supposed to.
If I let it drop on purpose, then I can
easily get a double play, maybe even a triple play.
So I understand that one um the ground rule double
can be problematic. Sometimes it over benefit, like sometimes on
(42:28):
a low wall it could have been a single that's
made into a double. It could have been a triple
or maybe even inside the park home run that's made
into a double. But it does in fact make sense.
Maybe the new the Posy rule, maybe that's the dumb
I mean that I don't think so, that's that's an
easy like the no collisions at home plate. No, I
(42:49):
kind of think that's a little bit. I never I
never thought Pete Roses play on Ray Fosse was a
good one. Like, it's it's an all star game. What
are you doing, tough guy? I played hard all they
are all the time. Yeah, you're an a hole. You're
an a hole. Um, But like, I don't, I just
think it changes. Catchers can still block the plate more
(43:10):
with their foot than with their body. They can do
it kind of cleverly, and I think it it's it
calls for more skilled than kind of root force. Plus
like guys just a sit and duck. Like that just
ended the bad I mean the fact that Buster Posey
broke his ankle. He did come back and win the
m VP the next year. But the fact that, like
you have to one of the best players in the sport,
it has to hurt themselves before you realize it's a
(43:32):
bad rule. Whatever. No, to me, the worst rule in
baseball is this one drop third strike and they can
run the first space. Yeah, why what's the point of
the drop third strike? I already struck you at once.
Now I gotta get you at first space as well,
(43:53):
and I only get credit for one out. I don't
make any sense. And it's not the picture's fault. It's
the catcher's fault. It's even sometimes it's not even the
catcher's fault, like if somebody's the hitter's fault. The hitter
chase is one in the dirt, you know, the catcher
knocks it down, you know, gets loose, Like now all
of a sudden, the hitter gets to run the first
(44:13):
Why he swing it a pitch he couldn't hit. He's
swing a pitch. Flag Guerrero couldn't hit. Well, there is
no pitch to flad. Actually, flag Garo struggle most with
the pitch thrown right down the middle. Um, that is
the dumbest rule ever. I already got you out. Now
I have to get you out again unless there's a
runner at first base, and then you can't it run
(44:36):
the first base. I mean you want to like not
completing the not completing the process, like there's a whole
process by which you have to catch the ball, and
then if you dropped the ball, even knock down, you
have to tag them around or step out and throw
it the first where somebody else has to catch it. Why,
that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. That's just dumb,
(44:58):
dumb um in basketball. To me, the dumbest rule, the
flagrant foul rule is dumb. The the new flagrance, the
flagrant one and flagrant two, Like, what are we doing?
Like we all know what it is. It's trying to
judge intent if you're trying to do harm to somebody else.
(45:21):
But the fact that any contact in the head, anyone
in the head, can be a flagrant foul. Like sometimes
guy's head is at the level of other people's elbows.
I know my head was at the level of somebody's elbows.
There's other dumb rules in basketball. Yes, yes, I was
gonna say. Everybody always talks about the you know, the
the shock of the foul, shock whatever. The guys who
can't shoot free throws, hacky shack, and they always say
(45:44):
they are horrible, horrible. Okay, so you also agree with that, well,
I I agree with from this standpoint. If you have
nothing to do with the play, he's walking down the
court and somebody smacks you or grabs you like, that's
not a common foul. That's an intentional foul. You're trying
to foul. It's not a basketball play. Somebody catches the
basketball and then you want to smack on the arm.
(46:05):
That's a fowl. Now I'll go shoot free throws. I
also think it's dumb that the NBA doesn't have one
in one. Everything else about the NBA is more difficult.
The lane is wider, the three point line is deeper,
the shot clock is shorter, takes eight You only get
eight seconds to get across mid court. The games are longer,
and yet you don't have one in one. They're supposed
(46:26):
to be the best players in the world and they
can't make a one on one. Disagree with that. But
the dumbest thing in football is not even the catch rule.
That's just trying to make something that's in exact exact.
The dumbest thing in football is the rule that ended
the Raiders chance of beating the Cowboys. Derek Carr is
(46:48):
stretching to get into the end zone. Stretching to get
into the end zone, he loses the ball at the
john if I said one foot line is that okay
foot line line? No one else, such as the football.
The defense did nothing to help him lose the football.
He just stretched and the ball slipped out of his hands.
(47:11):
And not only do the Raiders get the football, but
they get it at the twenty yard line. The fumble
into the indio and out of the end zone equals touchback.
Is such a ridiculous over punishment for a fumble that
was not claimed. That's you know what that's like. That's
(47:33):
like if you drop a twenty dollar bill, right and
instead of your mom saying, hey, who dropped the bill?
And then and you're like, well, I dropped the twenty
dollar bill. You know what you did. But because you
dropped it, I'm gonna give it to your brother and
sister just because you dropped it. You didn't mean to,
but you did, and so I'm going to give it
(47:54):
to them. Tell me somewhere else this exist in sports, right,
Like in basketball if you go in, like if you
go in and you go in for let's say you're
going in for a layup and you lose the ball
and it goes out of bounds. Yes, the other team
gets the ball, but they have to go the length
of the floor once they get the ball. Especially in football,
(48:15):
why are you giving up even if you're getting You're
giving up possession when it was never gained by the
other team, was never touched by the other team. It's
such a ridiculously bad rule. It's indescribable to to try
and explain his way. He had the ball, nobody touched him,
the ball slipped out of his hands and it went
through the end zone. Think of anywhere else on the
(48:36):
football field that happens. If Derek Carr is running on
the twenty yard line, stretches out for the nineteen yard
line where the first down occurs, and the ball slips
out of his hands and rolls forward to the seventeen
yard line, rolls out of bounds. Where do the where
do the Raiders get the football? Ramos? If it rolls
out of bounds on a kickoff? No no, no um.
(48:57):
Derek Carr rolls on a bootleg right. He's rolling to
the right side, almost same play of last night, only
instead of the end zone, he's at the twenty yard line.
The first down markers at the nineteen yard line, a
foot from the nineteen yard line. Derek Carr stretches out,
ball slips out of his hands, it rolls forward to
the seventeen yard line, then out about where does Derek
(49:17):
car get the ball yard? No, he gets it at
the point in which he fumbled the football. So you
can't fumble the ball forward the ball forward except when
it's through the How is this not a bigger deal?
And it was just like, yep, that's the rule. It's
a terrible rule. No one touched him. It was funny
(49:38):
because I heard Dean Blandino this morning on Colin Show
and he says, I'm like, well, it's consistent with the
kickoffs and the ball is being kicked out of the
end zone to the twenty yardland And I'm like, well,
but they're giving you the ball back on those plays,
right this one you're trying to score. So it's consistent, yes,
but it's not the same, right, I mean, Dan, Dan,
(50:00):
this is really the issue. I mean, look, this is
my issue with the with the with the ball moving
on catches or into the end zone, where like if
you're running back and you like you're running back and
you stretch out and you cross the plane and then
you put the ball down and then it comes loose.
It's not a fumble, right, once you cross the plane,
it's a touchdown. But if you fumble the football and
(50:21):
no one else touches it and goes out of bounds,
it's their ball at the twenty yard line. It's how
did anybody think, Like that's what the rule is? Like,
that's a good one. Yeah, that's a good one. It's
a terrible rule. It doesn't make any sense. And I
don't mind penalizing a team or a play for, you know,
(50:43):
trying to fumble it forward, but that that punishment is
just yeah, it's way too harsh, way too harsh. I don't,
I don't. I just it's so darned severe. It's that,
that's really it. That's it's very It's somebody goes jaywalk,
You're like lock him up for a year, like like
(51:04):
like like, dude, it was just day. Even even stopping
me for jaywalking, right like that seems insane. And and
remember this isn't even the worst application of this call
this year. Remember the Austin Seferian Jenkins touchdown against the
Patriots when that was overturned, when he never even actually
(51:25):
lost the ball. So so we can be up in
arms over Derek car This isn't even the worst application
for what we've gotten this year. It's amazing. Uh all right,
m D'Angelo Williams is gonna join us up coming next,
I'll ask him about both of these idiotic rules. Idiot Like,
(51:47):
you fumble the ball at the one foot line, it
goes through, nobody touches you, Nobody touches the ball, it
goes out of bounds and it's the other team's ball.
At the twenty, you fumble it at the five yard line,
reaching for the four yard line. Roll not about the
one yard line. You get it back where you fumble it.
Like that didn't make it didn't make any sense. Plus,
the Angel Williams joins us and we'll get his thoughts
(52:08):
on who made the dumbest decision this weekend in the NFL.
That's next. But first, I heard of this crazy story
over the weekend about these twins who grew up to
find out that their mom doesn't know who their real
father is. And this just crushes these dudes. So the
brothers set out on a mission to find their dad.
As it turns out, their mom was a bit wild
(52:29):
back in the day, so there are many options who
for who could be their dad. Could be an NFL player,
could be a small town veterinarian, big city cop, coked out, hedge,
fun guy, anyone, seemingly anyone could be their dad. They
fly all over the country. These dudes are piecing together clues,
meeting up with all sorts of crazy characters, crashing funerals,
(52:49):
picking up hedge hitchhikers, getting shot out, get into all
sorts of crazy situations just to find their old man.
This is the plot of Father Figures. It's a hilariou
this new comedy that starts uh this Friday. It's starring
Owen Wilson, Ed Helms and a bunch of other awesome people.
A matter of fact, it is actually playing now. You
can gonna select theaters playing now everywhere on Friday. It's
(53:12):
called Father Figures. You're gonna You're gonna snort, You're gonna
laugh so hard. It's rated R. Car shopping can be

(53:34):
M m m m m m m oh no, miss
so so, I'm not gonna be a lot of Missiletella
Christmas parties this year, you don't think so? Hashtag too soon?
Too soon? Uh? You know what? Every week we have
D'Angel Williams on every week he's he outdueles me in
(53:58):
the Who did the Dumbest Thing? This weekend the NFL.
I think I have him beaten this week. I really do.
Dangel Williams, two time pro bowler, joins us every week
on the Doug Gatlip Show. Who did something dumb? And
You're gonna point it out the dumbest decision? And I've
tussled with this and because I had three and I
know I gotta pick one, I'm gonna go ahead and
(54:22):
I'm gonna pick one. And all three of mine happened
in the Steller's Patriots game and my dumbest decision, and
I I really want to say decordinator, but I'm not
even gonna put on decordinator. You know what, I'm gonna
go ahead and I'm gonna put it on the decording coordinator.
How in the hell do you single cover grunk but
his impact line is blinking and he goes for a
(54:43):
hunerey yards just in the fourth quarter alone. Obviously you
would say, hey, I need to get some help on
this guy. I was gonna put it on our dy
and say already, you gotta do better and covering him. Uh,
I was gonna say that was the dumbest decision that.
My third one was the fact that at the end
of the game, no, no, no, you're gonna ruin it.
But okay, you're gonna take mine, but go ahead. Well, no, no,
(55:07):
I'm gonna let you have it. I'm gonna let you
have it. What was yours? And I'm gonna se if
it was the same. Well, I thought, you know, everybody's
pointing out, uh Ben throwing Todd Haley under the bus. Obviously,
I don't think you throw a slant there in the traffic.
But people are missing why the clock was running, right,
I mean, why why was the clock running in that
particular situation. That's because Darius Heyward Bay didn't get out
(55:29):
of bounds. You have to get out of bounds there
so that the clock stops. Then your team gets one
shot at the end zone and then they kick a
field goal. He doesn't they do the fake spike and
the rest, of course is history. But I think Darius
Heyward Bay not getting out of bounds is the dumbest
personal decision of the weekend. Okay, all right, I could
(55:50):
see that. I can add lib a little bit more
with that. Uh. I wouldn't call it a dumb decision
only because Juju Smith Schuster comes across on a slant route,
doesn't get out of bound and takes it sixty nine.
So if I'm a player and I just saw that,
I feel like I could do the same thing. I
think he ran out again. I mean, in fairness, I
think he ran out of gas and they missed a
(56:11):
bunch of tackles. Like you're right there, club, Yeah, I mean,
I you catch one bass, you go, you have you
catch one ball In that situation, you basically have one
job get out of bounds, and he didn't. So I
can respect that. I can respect that, all right, Help
me help me out, Help me out with with Big Ben.
Do we have what Big Ben said? This is big
Ben D'Angelo After the game, when asked who who called
(56:36):
the fake spike play, I was young clock it um.
I felt like that was the thing to do with
clock it and get yourself one play, um, and it
came from the sideline. Don't clock it. Don't clock it. Well,
at that time, I'm already got the guy. Everyone thinks
it's clocked, so you don't have time to try and
get everyone mind up. So it's um. I tried to
Eli saw that, you know, he kind of ran a
quick slanting there, and at that time, you just gotta
(56:58):
try and make a play. And I I didn't make
good enough throw yet none of it was He did say,
didn't make a good enough throw. But he also like, look,
he called the slant. Dude doesn't make run of slant
on his own. He's signaling out there, that's why the
slant was called. And you know, you know you also
you know I don't I don't love the throwing. Todd Haley,
(57:18):
he called he ordered the code red on me. What
were your thoughts on Big Ben? And uh, what all
went wrong in that last place? Man? Uh? I mean
we can go back to the play before that, that's
what we're wrong on that second place. But going back
to throwing your coach under the bus man like, that's
a tough one. That's a tough one. And it's a
tough one because of position. We've had this conversation before
(57:41):
and you pointed out that position plays a big role,
and especially the quarterback role. You don't pay a guy
a hundred million dollars plus over however many years he's played.
Two times he's been paid a hundred million dollars to
throw somebody that's making two hundred fifty dollars or half
a million dollars under the bus. It's a lot easier
for the step up and say, hey, man, I made
(58:01):
that call. It was on me, and move on as
opposed and said, hey, you know, I didn't think that
was the right call, but you know I should have
did this, or I should have did that. That's a
better way of handling it. But when you point the
finger somebody else, there's three point back at you. And
that's what makes this even worse. Not only was it
a devastating loss, uh, trying to figure out what the
(58:22):
hell it catches and what's not a catch and comparing
it to other things that you've seen, like it's it's
amazing to me that all these rules that are in
the National Football League and they're they're not consistent of us,
like there's no like, no, listen, that's that's what listen.
This is what I pointed out earlier, Dangel Williams joining us, like,
(58:43):
what's bad about the rules is twofold one. Everyone thought
that that's a catch, like did you catch the ball? Yeah?
And you're like, well but but by by rule. But
hold on. If if he's a running back, he crossed.
If it's you, you're going into the end zone, you
dive once you crossed the thrush old. Even you hit
the ground, ground caused the fumble, it's a touchdown. And
yet when it's a wide receiver, suddenly it's not. I
(59:05):
think the equally bad is what ended the Raiders game
where Derek Carr, he dives for the end zone, the ball,
no one touched him, The ball comes loose. You know,
if you fumble out on the ten yard line, no
matter where the ball goes, it goes out of bounds
and nobody gets possession. The fumbling team gets the ball
back at the place. Why is any different. That's what's crazy, Doug.
(59:26):
If he had a teammate follow on it, that's not
a touchdown. It goes back to where he fumbled it.
That's what's even crazier and insane about this. And I'm
gonna tell you something that's even better though. This is
what killed me. Does I've seen all across the league
where guys have you handed the ball off? The guys
bumbled it in his hands trying to get it. He
sticks over the plane, touchdown and it's knocked out of
(59:48):
his hand and it's not a fumble, but he never
had control of it on the hand off. I saw
yesterday where uh, you know, Bird from the Carolina Panthers.
He comes down one but cheeks inbounds, one buck tee
out of bounds and it was a touchdown. Yeah, I
saw that one to who was that yesterday? I saw it.
It was Bird. It was Bird, Bird from the Carolina
(01:00:10):
pathn Like, I can't. I like, and they go back
and they reviewed and they was like, it's touchdown. I'm
just like, dude, it's all up to the rest. And
they said, hey, did he make a football move, Yes,
he made a football move. He stretched for the goal line.
Did he have a he had a knee down, granted
nobody touched him. Did he have control of the ball,
you know what, Yes, I think he had control. But
(01:00:31):
at the same time, I'm also one of those guys
NFL rules, the NFL rules. If they said it was
a no catch, hey, I gotta roll with them as
a no catch. I'm not gonna sit here and be
a Cowboys fan and say, hey, you know, then you
have to say, David Brian catch was a catch when
they paid the green Bay package, thought yeah, I thought
it was. Let me get to some of the game stuff,
Dangeli Williams joining r something, Doug Gallars, You've got great
(01:00:52):
stuff in the game stuff. Um, But Antonio Brown partially
tears a calf. We don't know, like you know, a
sprain is a partial tail like we to. He's saying
he'll be back for the playoffs. But they don't have
Shas here, and they're not gonna have a b for
the rest of the regular season, and they're not gonna
have a home field advantage. What's the likelihood that the
Steelers even get to meet the Patriots in the playoffs?
(01:01:14):
With with meet them, they'll meet him in the playoffs.
They got too much firepower in that offense because even
when they be went down, they didn't miss a beat.
They didn't miss a beat at all. The younger players
Juju stepped up sixty nine yards. Uh uh, Jesse James,
he stepped up. He scored the touchdown that was ultimately overturned,
so he didn't score a touchdown, but he was very
close to scoring the touchdown. It was a learning experience.
(01:01:37):
I think that was the game that got the Steelers
over the hump in terms of getting them where they
want to be in the playoffs. There dangerous team. Now
they just got beat the eight in a row. They
was enjoying Monday's off. Now you you run into this
where you know you're this late in the season, you
don't get that Monday off and you found out, man,
life is hard. So in order to get back on
the gravy saying you gotta go on, you gotta go
(01:01:58):
back on the eight game where street guess what that
a game whist can get you in the Super Bowl.
Dangel Williams joining us on the Doug Gottlip Show kind
of lost in this, kind of a little bit lost
in it because it was Saturday Night, the Chiefs dominating
performance over the l A Chargers, who many people have
deemed the most dangerous team in the a f C
not named the Steelers, not named the Patriots. Do you
(01:02:21):
believe the Chiefs are back? Who doing all this talking? Does?
Who doing all this talking? Who I've been saying day
in and day out. The Chargers are just what you
see if you ever saw them. Hence they it's a
tree in the woods that the fall doesn't make a noise.
That's what That's what the San Diego Chargers are in
(01:02:41):
what way? Nobody nobody's watching, so are they making an ois?
And then when somebody's watching and you're just like, oh, okay,
so it doesn't make a noise. Because they played the
Kansas City Chiefs, who I said was gonna come in
and win that game because they're gonna do the same
thing that they've done before, but they're gonna mask it
(01:03:01):
in terms of we're gonna move guys around, we're gonna
put guys in a different position, but run the same place.
Early on, they wasn't doing that and that's the only
way that they have a chance. And quite frankly, I'm
telling you this right now, they're gonna be the first
team out of the playoffs. Uh. She's like, there's nobody.
It's it's New England. It's New England. It's the Pittsburgh Stellers,
and I can't name another team that's up there. I mean,
(01:03:22):
everybody's talking about the Jacksonsville Jaguars. Uh there's this, there, that,
and they have a dominating defense, defense win championships. But again, Doug,
I've never seen the team wins zero zero. They gotta
have some level of offense. Diezel Williams joining us in
the Doug gottlif Show. Let's um, let's get to those
Panthers taking down the Packers. Aaron Rodgers, by his own estimation,
(01:03:44):
said he didn't he didn't play well, threw three picks,
although the last they still had a shot. And then
there was a There there's a fumble, right Geronimo h
it's his last names, Ernamo, Yeah, no, no, no no, Jeronimo
Allison uh all he catches the ball two steps and
then get and then fumbles. Great swipe, but you know,
(01:04:05):
again if it regardless of the rule, Um, what's your
level of faith in Carolina once we get to the playoffs.
Now you've seen them kind of involved as a team.
I love their defense. I absolutely positively love their defense. Uh,
Cam is playing okay football. And I'm saying he playing
okay football because if Cam is playing his vest and
(01:04:27):
playing great football, then you look back last a couple
of years ago and they made it to the Super Bowl.
They were blowing teams out, teams that were supposed to
play with them, they were blowing them out. So Cam
is playing good football now. I just don't know how
long he could keep replicating what he's doing. I'm not
completely so long. I was sold on Aaron Rodgers. I'm
still am because he's did it. He did it for
(01:04:49):
a very long time. When you throw two or three
picks and you've had a bad game and people are
just like, oh man, it's okay by your estimations, you've
had a bad game. You bounce back, then it's fine.
But when Cam throws two or three picks, it's just like,
as he done? Is this? I mean? This is? I mean?
I mean when when when we're gonna see good Cam.
So when you have that that mantro being good Cam,
(01:05:11):
Badcam or good cop bad cop, then that's that's not
a good look. Because people are always guessing every week
which guy are we gonna get. We know we're gonna
get the same amount of defense. It is gonna be
a tough defense. Uh. The only time you can put
up points and if you really earned these points, nobody's
just walking in the end zone. Great stuff from Dangel
Williams every week is he brings you who made the
(01:05:34):
dumbest decision in the NFL and his own opinionated view
of the league in which he was an awesome player
in Danzel. Great stuff. Thanks for Jonas. It was something
you didn't talk about. It was something you didn't talk about.
You didn't talk about Seattle getting dominated. Man, We did,
We didn't normally is that God? No, we just said
it was over. Like it's over, dude, it's over. It's over,
(01:05:56):
like you thought it was over with Jacksonville last week
and their names, like you didn't know it was over.
You're down ford it and nothing if you didn't know,
now now you know. I love it, Doug. I love it.
So there's no more toils on the eleven and a
half now, correct. I have a merry Christmas touch soon
(01:06:17):
you have a merry Christmas. Man, have validays all right?
That's Daniel Williams joining us on the Doug Gotlip Show.
Online car shopping can be confusing, not anymore. With true

enjoy more confident car buying experience. Dan Buyers, a Seahawk fan,
he called it over like this is man it. I mean,
(01:06:38):
when it goes, it goes. When it goes for players,
you can see it. When it goes for an entire team.
It's really really stunning. I mean that was wow. Wow. Anyway,
I know, I know I'm putting the guys on the spot,
but John and Ryan have worked with me a lot,
and they've heard me on the air. Didn't I say
that there is something wrong with this defense at the
(01:06:59):
start of the season, at the end of last season.
I think they can vouge that at some point the
health was going to catch up with him, and you
started to see cracks last year, and then it kind
of fell apart this year. And then when you talk
about the Pete Carroll era coming to an end at
USC when these guys played with the chip on their
shoulder for how many seasons? When that ends, it ain't
(01:07:21):
gonna be pretty. And it wasn't pretty yesterday. No. No,
it's a yeah. He it does not. It ends, it
ends poiling, it ends boiling. But it was a good run,
quite a run. And now and not only do they
does the NFC US have to worry about the Rams.
Jimmy Garoppolo and the Niners are looking like, well, that's
that's the big thing is if you watch, you know,
Garoppolo looks like the real deal. Rams are gonna be
(01:07:41):
around for a while. Cardinals. I don't have great expectations
of them that you know, likely new coach, likely new coach,
new quarterback soon as well, um, you know, but they
had the benefit of like everything timing was, everything about
them was perfect. They drafted a quarterback in the third round, right,
so they didn't have to pay a bunch of money.
They had all these hungry guys they draft in lower
(01:08:03):
rounds and they probably should have gone in. And the
Niners got they you know, they withstood the Niners when
the Niners were at the peak, and then the Niners
aged in a heartbeat. Uh. They dealt with the Cardinals,
who had a couple of good years and they benefited
from the fact of the Rams. Though the Rams were
always competitive with them, the Rams could never win that
division because they had no offense. Now the sudden Niners
(01:08:25):
and Rams look rebuilt and it looks like the Seahawks
are gonna have to refresh, you know, the NFC West
is it changing for sure? The NFC South. While you
could have three playoff teams including the Carolina Panthers, but
the Panthers in the news for a bunch of other reasons. First,
linebacker Thomas Davis has spended two games for his blind
side hit on Packers wide receiver Davante Adams. Yesterday. He's
expected the appeal that decision. The Panthers also announced that
(01:08:49):
Tina Becker has been named the CEO of the franchise,
taking over the day to day operations of the team.
She'll take over control of the team from owner Jerry Richardson,
who announced his step being aside to focus on the
sale of the team. That's according to word report. Ridgardson
announced yesterday he was selling the team after he was
being investigated for workplacements condom. Yeah, there's an article out
(01:09:09):
about him. John Wortheime did it in Sports Illustrated, where
some female workers said that he asked if he could
shave their legs. I mean, like, look, there's a positive
spin to it, right, I mean there's a lot of
creepy old man behavior. Do you know he had a
heart transplant in two thousand nine, Yes, right, I mean
(01:09:30):
could he go like, look, you have a bunch of
different options here. When you get caught being creepy guy, right,
you can do you do? Some people do substance of
u s guy. They you know, they're like, I I listened,
I was drunk, I was high, I was I was
out of it, and you're like, man, I don't know.
That's that's bad, and they resigned. Some people do, uh,
you know, some people that they're sex addicts. You do
the sex attic thing. People who do it on Twitter like,
(01:09:52):
oh I was hacked, I was hacked. You get like
one hack in your in your career. Um, could Jerry
Richardson say it wasn't me, This was this donor heart
That's what it was before. No, the donor heart excuse
work when you're a creepy old guy who work for you,
(01:10:13):
if you can shave their legs, oh, I don't think so.
It's neither here nor there when it comes to that.
That's wow. Wow, Um, Villanova still number one in college
hoops dog. That is a very nice right turn, by
the way you took. Absolutely it's a good state to
Arizona State three. And how about this Minneapolis star. Trivine says,
(01:10:35):
the twins are actively pursuing fragi picture you Darvish. Yeah,
there's a little, a little outside of football. I know
it's a huge football day. Kobe gets number eight and
twenty four retired tonight that Kobe land set up outside
of Staples Doug Gotleis show Fox Sports Radio, So like,
look it it kind of does feel like like it
doesn't feel like Jerry Richardson eighty one years old and
he's gonna sell all these guys like, yeah, I'm gonna
(01:10:56):
buy the Panthers. Do you have any idea how much money?
Like like, look, Derrick Jeter did not throw down a
ton of money. He got a bunch of dudes together
and now he's running the team. But Derrick Jeter does
have assets to which and his name has equity in
and of itself. So, um, it stands the reason that somebody,
(01:11:20):
somebody big in the South Carolina is a southern city,
it's an important market, and they're gonna massively overpay for
the team, right. Like It's one of the things that
is not pointed out about the Clippers sale, which was
a forced sale. And in the Clippers sale, they he
(01:11:42):
paid a billion dollars more than it was supposedly worth, right, like,
didn't pay three billion, and the Clippers were two or
two billion, Clippers were with one I can't remember the
exact number. But Bomber paid a billion of beat billion
dollars more than the sets value. And remember, unlike some
(01:12:02):
of these other teams, the Clippers do not own their
own venue. They don't they don't own the venue. They're
not the number one team in the market. They do
have the fact they're in l a there in that
big market. And uh, and that is incredibly, incredibly valuable,
but not so valuable that you should overpay by a
billion dollars. But anybody thinks, like Jerry Richards said, oh
(01:12:23):
he's gonna lose the team, like I guess you're gonna
sell for two billion dollars, sell it at the absolute
peak of values for the NFL. But there's some creepy
stuff in there. Man, Sure I like to shave your legs,
you offer to shave women's legs. How much you got
(01:12:46):
anything that you're indue that you want to share before
it comes out? In the Sports Illustrated article, No, I'm good. Okay, music,
you got you got any like bizarre? Like? Man, I
really like scarfs. You know what. Just read the article Doug.
It's coming out next week to tell all about Fox
Sports Radio and how lame it is. Yeah, we're all
(01:13:07):
super lame. Yeah. I did make eyes at Ramos once,
but it was more making eyes at the hamburger that
he brought in what I was making it. He just
happened to be holding up the hamburger at a place
where it looked like he had a twinkle in his eye.
But it's again over. He was eating an out burgers
really hungry at the time. Um are the Panthers? Speaking
(01:13:28):
of which? Are they on their way to the super
Bowl again? Nick writes? Think? Nick Wright thinks they may
just well be. We'll discuss of coming next in Doug
Otlop Show, Fox Sports Radio. Online shopping can be confusing,
Well not anymore. With True Price from True Car. Now
you can know the exact price you'll pay for your

(01:13:50):
car buying experience. Doug otli Show, Fox Sports Radio. All Right, look,
it's starting to get a little clear. Who's gonna make
the playoffs, but it's still murky for some of these teams.
We'll get to that upcoming. You love that Paul McCartney song,
don't You I? I love the Beatles. I love Paul
McCartney and so favorite Beatles songs? What? Uh? My favorite
(01:14:11):
song is um Loosening the Sky with Diamonds music. I'm
gonna mid something here that I probably shouldn't admit. I
don't know that song. Okay, I'm not you know what.
I'm not gonna say that because not everybody likes the
Beatles likes every one of their songs. So I didn't
say I don't like their music. I like, I like
like the basic ones that I know. Well, what happens
(01:14:34):
is people get like, oh, what are you kidding me,
Like there's some greater person because they know all the
Beatles songs. So I appreciate that you like the Beatles,
and I'm not gonna say, oh, you know that song?
What are you talking about that? Bruce Springsteen. Guys like, dude,
you don't want to see the Boss? Like, no, not really.
He goes forever, hees forever. There's a bunch of songs
I don't know. They may be deep and connect to
you like mmm, I like born in the USA. I
(01:14:56):
thought was pretty cool. All right, yeah, that's fine. It's
not my jam, not my jam. Um. I did promise
this week we will be having on experts for holiday
gift giving. That'll we'll start that, I think, starting that tomorrow,
over the next couple of days, slowly but surely. What
the best things are to get women men, uh, and
(01:15:19):
and younguns lilts? If you will get to that first though,
Let's get to this. Every day in the Doug got
Lip Show, we play for you a portion of a
show that occurred earlier on Fox Sports Radio Fox Sports TV.
In this case, it's first things first a show. By
the way, I'll be hosting co hosting on Christmas Day.
You get a bright do on Fox Sports one. In
(01:15:39):
Christmas Day while you're opening gifts, you'll get the gift
of me on TV. Huh, that's a good gift. Um.
It's Chris Carter general Nick right. Nick had this to
say about the NFC playoff picture. When Cam plays like
he did Sunday, there's dangerous is anything in the league? Now?
The knock on them all year has been you have
no idea if Cam's going to play it that way
(01:16:00):
or not, and that's a fair knock on them. But
when they play like that, they can be see. So
you and I watched this game together like they were
in full control until the very very end when they
almost lost it. They can beat anybody because the defense
is a top five defense. And when Cam's playing like that, man,
you don't know. They have a good running game. And
when Cam's throwing well, they can beat you in the
passing game. Uh yeah, I'm buying the Panthers. Like the
(01:16:26):
perfect example is Aaron Rodgers through three interceptions three and
I will grant you they recover an on side kick.
But his first game back, they threw three interceptions. The
Panthers are playing at home, and the Packers still had
the ball with a chance to tie the game up
very very late. Just I'm having trouble. And yes, they
beat the Vikings, who are likely to be the number
two seed in the playoffs a week before, but they
(01:16:48):
were oft injured. They were completely injured, and also had
some uncharacteristic turnovers. So my guess is that water finds
its level. That means the Carolina Pants is gonna have
to go on the road to Philadelphia are gonna have
to go on the road to Minnesota. We're gonna have
to go on the road to l A and beat
the Rams. And I don't see either one of those
three scenarios. Now the biggest thing upcoming for them is
(01:17:12):
whether or not uh they can they can win the
division as opposed to the Saints. Remember the Saints swept them,
so they're too The Saints are two games up on
them essentially, or they're a full game ahead of them,
even though they have the exact same record as ten
and four the Panthers. Panthers finished with the Buccaneers at home.
We're likely to lose to Atlanta and the Falcons in
(01:17:36):
a probably winner goes loser goes home sort of situation,
so they're gonna get in. And the NFC playoff picture
I think is more difficult in the wild card um
than the a f C is in the wild card.
And I don't see the Carolina Panthers doing all of
much of anything. That brings us to the Cowboys, who
(01:17:57):
got a big win over the Raiders. Now for the
Cowboys to make the layoffs, they're not in control of
their own destiny. Can't just win too and say they're in,
they need the Falcons lose too out their last three.
Of course, Falcons have to play tonight. Falcons still have
to go to New Orleans take on the Saints, and
then the Panthers at home. So assuming the Falcons win tonight,
which is a possibility though not a likelihood, they have
(01:18:21):
to win one of the next two to lock themselves
in the playoffs, and the Saints is anything but a
lock um. And then they also need the Cowboys. Also
need the Lions to lose one of their last two games,
which I do think will happen because well they're the Lions.
Like the Lions game on Saturday against the Chicago Bears,
(01:18:47):
did anybody watch the snap of that? I want honesty
by Are you watch like every sporting event ever? You
love the NFL ball ball over things? Um, I know
you had the show Sunday, so I'm guessing you had
to prep forward. Did you watch? I did, but I
did flip over as you said to Wichita, stay in Oklahoma,
which is more entertaining. Even though that game was like
(01:19:08):
fifteen points for most of the game. As you said,
watching Trey Young was a little bit more exciting than
that one. The Lions finish up with the Bengals on
the road. Bengals are complete mess right now right um,
and then the Packers at home. But the Packers could
be If the Packers lose this upcoming week, they're playing
for nothing anyway, or they could be playing for everything.
But the Lions are seven and six on the year,
(01:19:31):
and they've won five of their last seven games. If
you want the team that's most likely to get bounced
early from the playoffs, let me give you who the
Lions have beaten this year. Now. They did beat the
Vikings on the road. That was one of case Keenom's
first starts right where they didn't let him do anything.
But outside of that, they beat in the Cardinals from
(01:19:52):
me Giants terrible. They beat the Packers, but that was
the first game Aaron Rodgers didn't start. The Rounds, the Bears,
the Buccaneers, the Bears again. And even if they just
beat the Bengals, they would have beaten one playoff team
all season long, one team with above five record all
season long. I know that Bill parcels as you are,
(01:20:15):
which the record says you are. Not the Lions. They're
not better than all these other teams in the NFC.
They're just very very fortunate timing and scheduling, timing and
the schedule working out in their favor. Now the Packers,
on the other hand, a little bit better uh playoff potential.
(01:20:36):
They get the Vikings at home, that's a hard game.
If they can win that one, then they beat the Lions.
If they beat the Lions on the road, they end
up with the same record as the Lions and a
split with the Lions. So then it comes down to
what divisional But their divisional record is a fascinating Lions.
(01:21:01):
Divisional record right now is four and one Packers or
two and two Lions would go. I believe, although they
may be now, they would have even records then, right
because they would have had beaten the Vikings that's three
and two, beaten the Lions that's four and two, and
the Lions would be fourign too as well. Then it
(01:21:23):
would go down to conference record, which Lions would be inferior.
I don't know too many different scenarios. If your check ends,
the line comes on, don't let your car suffer. Head
to auto zone. Auto zone has the auto zone fixed
finder that can check it on the spot for free.
It could be something serious or something as simple as
(01:21:45):
a loose gas cap. Get in the zone, auto zone

get his thoughts on rebuilding the Giants, his thoughts on
how you change these ridiculous rules in the NFL, and
(01:22:07):
did the Steelers lose all hope of reaching the Super Bowl?
Last night we discussed next to the Doug Gotlip Show,
Fox Sports Radio. Whoop Doug Gotlief Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Good day for football, Good day of football. Rams just
scored again in the Seahawks by the way, just scored again.
(01:22:30):
Chiefs look like they're gonna win their division after submitting
season Dulgrums. Chargers all banged up from that game, but
not dead yet. We still had Falcons Buccaneers. Important game
for the Falcons, hopes of getting back to the playoffs.
Cowboys with a needed win and they get their running
back back, but they're not in yet and need some
help to get there. Giants are competitive but cannot unseat
(01:22:53):
the Eagles, who looked like a team that was missing
more than just their quarterback. Defense wasn't the same either,
And then oh yeah, by the way, we have the
Patriots finding a way to beat the Steelers with a
little bit of help from one of the dumber rules
in sports. UM, let's welcome in Michael Lombardi, of course,
the former general manager longtime member of several front offices
(01:23:16):
the National Football League. Can hear his podcast on the
Ringer UH read his podcast in the Ringer Fall on
Twitter at m Lombardy NFL. UH. There's a there's a
lot to talk about with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the
Patriots game. Let's start with just the rule. I understand
what the rule is, I understand why it was called
(01:23:36):
as such, But why does this rule which doesn't seem
to be I don't know. Like Michael, if I asked you,
did he actually catch the football? The answer is yes.
If I asked you, if des Bryant caught the football,
you'd say yes. If I asked you if Calvin Johnson
caught the football, you'd say yes. Why is the rule
still intact if everyone agrees that these are not indicative
of whether or not you actually caught the football. You know,
(01:23:58):
nobody seems to have the willingness to want to change it.
You've got to complete the act all the way to
the ground. And I think you know, there's a slight
variation here. I mean, I don't think anybody disputes that
Jesse James caught the ball. I think Jesse James was
trying to rearrange the ball in his hand to make
sure he crossed the plane. I think that was what
he was most concerned about, and I think that's why
(01:24:20):
there might have been a little bit of looseness in
the ball, and there might have been something. Look, look,
there's so many times this happens around the goal line,
ball slips out of a guy's hand. I get that,
But this was a catch that the guy was trying
to utilize the goal line as his friend and break
the plane and then hopefully have a touchdown. We have
to keep evaluating it, we have to keep looking at it.
(01:24:41):
I mean, look, I've said this before. It goes back
to the tuck rule. Fifty guys at a bar. I
think it's a catch, then it should be a catch.
And I think that's what we have to get back to.
I tend to agree the other rule and I want
to get back to that game though, is and I
know you you brought up you brought this up, Um
and Uh on your podcast. I hate the rule that
the Raiders lost on where if you if I'm with
(01:25:02):
the ball at the twenty yard line and nobody touched,
he goes out of bounds, you get the ball back
of the twenty yard line. If I'm on the ball
at the one yard line, it rolls out of the
end zone and you lose the football and the other
team gets to the twenty yard line. Um, are are
you okay with that rule as well? Yeah? I mean, look,
you've got to coach that. I mean, that's part of
the that's part of the game. I mean, you know
that makes the game unique. And you coach in New England,
(01:25:25):
you know they don't they don't want their players extending
the ball out to the goal line. They want the
ball tucked in a in a secure position, because when
you get that close, you don't want to take any chances.
And so you coach against it. And as I've often said,
you know, the secret to all victory lies in the
organization of the not obvious and when you can organize
the not obvious, like they do in New England, you
tend to win those games. When you want to put
the ball out like Marcus Peters was doing the other
(01:25:48):
night on his interception that didn't get stripped, or Lashawan
McCoy does numerously when he runs the ball down the
field and you get away with it, great. But when
you don't get away with it, don't cry about it.
I think that's the rule. That's a good rule. This
catch thing, to me, I'm not sure of I think
the catch I understand the intent, but I don't get
it because you go to the ground when sometimes the
ground is your friend, just because you don't want to
(01:26:08):
get yourself hurt or you have you lose your balance.
I don't think that doesn't mean you catch the football.
Michael Lombardi joining us in the Dug Gottlieb Show, All right, um.
Ben Roethlisberger after the game says that Todd Haley uh
called for the called for the final play that he
wanted to clock the football. Are you okay with your
(01:26:29):
quarterback saying that the offensive coordinator overruled him? Look, I
think the best thing you could say there is, Look
what we just didn't get it done. Life goes on.
I mean, you don't have to throw anybody under the bus,
and and you know it didn't work out. Unfortunately, you
threw the ball inside. What most people don't understand, and
I think this is what nobody's gonna question ben On,
is when you throw the ball in the middle of
(01:26:51):
the field at eye level, you run a great risk
that ball can get tipped. There's a rule. Now it's
not been effect by a lot of teams, but most
good team in the league will throw the ball on
the goal line and low. That's where you throw the ball.
You throw the ball down into the goal line. When
you're on the back line, you throw it high. Like
Dwight Clark caught the ball in in a playoff game
(01:27:12):
against the Cowboys years ago Montana, looked like he was
throwing it out of bounce. That's what you do. So
when you break that code, when you break that rule,
you enter into your own risk and you've got to
live with the consequences whether the coach said go for
it or not. You're too much of a veteran quarterback
to know if I throw this ball in the middle field,
it gets tipped. I'm in trouble. I need it low
and down. I think that's the mistake. Um, now, Ben,
(01:27:35):
But Ben called the route right like as much as
he might not have. He didn't call for you wanted
the spike wasn't it wasn't his audible on the route? Well,
I mean I couldn't tell. I mean I've gone back
and looked at it again and it's hard to see
what's signally. He the only there was a one man route.
The line was discombbulate. Nobody really knew what was going
on on the play, so the communication was horrible. And
if you can't get everybody at a critical component of
(01:27:56):
a game, to get everybody on the same page, you
probably shouldn't run the play. You know. The one thing
about the play in Super Bowl forty nine, everybody understood
what was going to happen. They ran the play this play,
I don't think everybody did. And and Eli Rodgers looked like,
I mean, you could just see Eric Row wasn't sure
about the play and he saw the guy he was covered.
I mean, look, Eric Row made a great play on
that play, he was covered, and Ben made a poor
(01:28:18):
decision to throw the ball in a crowd of people
and think he was going to live for another day.
Michael Lombardi joining us in the dug out Lips show.
Antonio Brown, hurt Ryan Schayes here out and now they
have to go on the road. What's the likelihood Michael,
now that the Steelers, who might have more talent at
individual positions than anybody in football, what's the likelihood they
get to a Super Bowl? Look, I think you have
(01:28:40):
to take this game on Sunday and and if you're
the Steelers, you've got to say to yourself, look, we
we learned something. We lost Antonio Brown and that might
have just helped us learn something. It didn't help us
lose one of our best players. But we controlled the
ball for thirty five minutes. We kept the Patriots off
the field. We played the pace of the game that
we have to play to beat him. Now, on third
and four, we probably needed to convert. We throw. We
(01:29:03):
threw a pass inside to Schuster and dron Harmon made
a great play playing one cut coverage and tackled him.
We didn't get to keep the ball. But the formula
for beating the Patriots is real simple. We're gonna have
to continue to have multiple third downs. They had sixteen
in the game. We have to have multiple third downs.
We've got to convert them at a really high rate.
They converted ten. That's over. So we're gonna keep the ball.
(01:29:24):
The best defense we can put on Tom Brady and
Rob Gronkowski and Dion Lewis and all these players they
have is to for us to control the ball. They
controlled it thirty five minutes. The Patriots only ran eight
team plays in the first half. So you've got that's
how the formula has to be. Now you have Antonio
Brown into that it works. That's the key is to me,
You've got to beat the Patriots with your offense, not
(01:29:47):
necessarily with your defense. Everybody's gonna say, well, we gotta
put somebody else on Gronk. Look, they don't have anybody
else that can cover Gronk. They don't have anybody else
that can take away Tom Brady's ability to read their defense.
So how do you win the game? You win the
game with your offense. Michael Lombardi joining us on the
Doug GOTTLV Show here on Fox Sports Radio, rams go
in and kick the hell out of Seattle. That felt
(01:30:08):
like it was more about Seattle than it was the
Rams your take. Look, I I was wrong on the
Rams earlier in the year. I was wrong on Jared Goff.
I think he's played much better. I think this team
is all about Todd Gurley. I think it starts and
ends with Todd Gurley. And I think Sean mcbagy's done
a wonderful job of controlling the way. He helps his
quarterback with a lot of play action. I think they
have very few dropback passes. But the Rams made a
(01:30:30):
statement the Rams are a good young team up in
their defensive front. I mean, you've got some guys up
there that are hard to block, and Seattle isn't gonna
push him around anymore. And I think what they found
out was there's a new sheriff in town. The Rams
are for real. They went up in there and a
hard place to play. Look, Seattle hasn't played well all
year at home. And when you're a team that thrives
on playing at home and you don't play well there,
(01:30:53):
that tells me there's something wrong with your football team.
It's like dome teams. Dome teams typically can win at
home him because of the crowd noise, but when they
go outside, they don't really affect. They don't win as
much and they're one lost record. You have to evaluate
yourself outside the dome Seattle. When they start to lose
at home, that's when they really have to evaluate themselves.
And right now they're not a good team. What's your
(01:31:15):
thoughts on Dak Prescott? You know, I I feel like
there was some natural regression that was going to take
place in a year two as he had more of
the playbook. It's been it's been made more apparent because
he didn't have his running back and des Bryant no
longer looks like the elite pass catcher he was a
couple of years ago, but Dak Prescott almost at the
end of year two. What's your evaluation, Look, I think
(01:31:38):
it's real simple. I think the Cowboys are really overrated
on offense. I think their offensive line is benefited by
having a great back. Most great backs make offensive lines better,
and I think that's one problem to their skill players
are one of the worst in the league. I mean,
des Bryant makes seventeen million dollars and I can't you
can't win one on one matchups. He can't move around,
he doesn't have the ability to make play. He drops
(01:32:00):
too many passes. Cole Beasley's down yards, Jason went and
great player belongs in the Hall of Fame, but not
the same player. They don't have a lot of skill.
They just can't just roll the ball out there and
score thirty. They have to manufacture points and that becomes
hard because you've got Dez who needs to line up
in one spot, You've got Cold Beazley who can only
play a certain way, and then you've got Jason Witten
who's used to a role. So they're limited by what
(01:32:21):
they can do. And I think all this makes Dak
Prescott suffer. I think they need some speed on offense.
I think they need to become more explosive. They are
far from where they were a year ago. And it
starts with Dez. I mean, Dez hasn't made the place
he needs to make and when he has opportunities to
make the catch, he's always in a crowd and he
doesn't come down with the ball. Um Aaron Rodgers mistake
to come back so us in You know, look, I
(01:32:43):
think the mistake was this. I think that they came back,
they put him on the show. They should have run
the ball more effective. They running the football They should
have gone into the game control in the pace of
the game. They went into the game thinking Aaron's just
going to deliver another win. And I think less Aeron
would have meant more Aeron in that game, and I
would have run the ball more effectively. I know Rogers
was their second leading rusher, but Aaron Jones was running
the ball. He only had five carries. He was running
(01:33:04):
the football, and I think, look, the problem at Green
Bay is this. Their defense can't carry him. They know it.
Aaron Rodgers has to carry them. They can't make the
plays that they have to make. Their talent level on
defense hasn't been very good. So they get desperate on
offense and they make a mistake and all of a
sudden it cost him the game. I think Aaron Rodgers
should take the rest of your off all right. What
about the Eagles, Um, they struggle with the Giants. Obviously,
(01:33:26):
this is Nick foles first start, and people said, hey,
the drop between Nick Foles and Carson Wentz, isn't that great?
Cowboy Raiders at home they are kind of a complete mess.
Then the Cowboys, they may not play their guys because
they may have home field throughout. What's your evaluation of
the Eagles seeing them one week with Nick Foles their
starting quarterback. Well, look, I mean Nick true four touchdown
passes did a great job. I thought they're special teams
(01:33:48):
really helped them win the game. They blocked upon uh,
they gave him great field position. The defense turned the
ball over. Those two touchdowns are really a result of
the special teams in defense, and the Eagles offense has struggled.
I mean, the Eagles offense is not going to beat Minnesota.
They're not going to beat the Rams again. They're not
going to beat Atlanta if Atlanta gets in, They're not
gonna beat Carolina with the way they're set up right now.
(01:34:08):
If you can block the front like the Giants did
with a backup offensive line, maybe Justin Peu didn't play yesterday.
I mean they had guys all over and they blocked
Eli came looked like the Eli of old. He came back.
They attacked them in the down the field and look,
if you go back and watch that game closely, I
think they had four chances inside the eight yard line.
They wasted a couple of plays, one running play particularly
where I thought they could get the ball in the
(01:34:29):
end zone. I thought Folds did a nice job. They
got hit an awful lot. But anybody who tells me
that Folds can make up for Carson Wentz, I'm gonna
laugh at it, because when you play the better teams
in the league, you're not gonna be able to get
away with it. And I think the Giants weren't one
of the better teams. Guys in the secondary for the Giants,
nobody could even name half the guys trying to cover,
and I think the Eagles benefited from that yesterday. What's
your buy into the Jaguars. I think the Jaguars is
(01:34:52):
all about pace. I think the team that plays the
Jaguars that can get ahead of them and make them
play from behind will beat them easily. But if they
Jaguars can control the pay to the game and they
can make you play from behind, the key to beating
the Jaguars you've gotta get your You have to keep
their base defense on the field. You've got to keep
Kleias Campbell playing defensive end, not defensive tackle and rushing
your quarterback. And when you can do that, you can
(01:35:13):
move the ball on them. But if you get into
a nickel game against them, that plays right into their
strength and some of these teams do that. Now Tennessee
in Week two, they didn't get into that game because
Tennessee doesn't have enough diversity with their offense. So they
played a base game and they put forty points on them.
I think it's gonna have to come down to can
Blake Bortles play well in a pressure situation in a
pressure game? My answer is no. We'll see. The Niners
(01:35:35):
have their quarterback in the future in Garoppolo only had
to give up a second round pick, but one reason
was because whoever traded for him was going to have
to pay him. Did the Niners make a mistake though,
Michael and not pre negotiating that deal before seeing him,
because now it feels like it's going to cost him
a lot more money. Look, I mean, you don't mind
paying for quality, right, So if you know you're gonna
get a marquee quarterback, why do not pay for him?
(01:35:56):
I mean, look, I think it's gonna be one of
the situations where the the Patriots traded away the future quarterback.
I mean, the reason we drafted Jimmy Garoppolo was to
have a young player to pass the torch. Did a
lot of work on him when I was in Cleveland,
got fired, went to went to New England. We were
able to draft him there. I think Jimmy's great. I
thought Jimmy was great before he went there. They had
no leverage in this at all, Doug, because the reality
(01:36:17):
of the situation is real simple. Jimmy was gonna let
it play out. Jimmy knows he's good, and Jimmy knows
a lot of teams need quarterbacks, and so why is
he in any hurry to do a contract. He's not.
He's gonna wait and see what the market bears for
him and then go from there. Great stuff, as always,

Lucas liked it. He loved that. He started screaming out
gorilla walkers, gorilla walkers, and I'm like, don't don't screaming
out loud. Uh, gorilla walkers. Yeah, the a t M
six is the large walkers on the planet. On those
are a grilla that called guerrilla walkers because their hands
(01:38:08):
their feet are backwards in the front. So at the
at the end, you mean, yeah, at the end of
the movie. Yeah, that actually looks like my dog. Yes,
my dog is a sheepadoodle, but you know it has
the long poodle legs and my wife has got like
a pretty tight little cut going right now. And it
was laying on my bed the other night and I
was like, just like the I was like, Harper. My
(01:38:29):
daughter was Harper then, just like those walkers in the
in the Star Wars and she's like exactly, like okay,
exactly like good movie, go see it. Like, well, eventually
when we get to the point to where there's too
many Star Wars, you're like, another Star Wars come like
the disneyification of it. But I thought that was really cool.
It's funny. I was telling Ryan that you and I
(01:38:49):
are more of the critics of the movie, and even
though we're fans, we had the critics point of view
of it, because like it's kind of lower on the
fans scale and the critics are really high. So you
and I had the critic view of it, and the
fan view seems to be a little bit lower, which
I don't understand, but again, everybody has their own point
of views. Yeah, I think that there's a thought that
(01:39:11):
some of it poops on other movies, other Star Wars movies.
It's also directed by what ray Ryan Johnson Um who
directs these these next two right, and so he's got
a kind of different view of it. I don't know.
I thought they did a good job capturing the dark
and the light, the inner inter pull, the inner issues
with everybody. Um, there was one portion of it with
(01:39:36):
Princess Leiah which was a little far fetched. Was but
then when you start to think about it, like, okay, maybe,
um you know the part I'm talking about, right, I do.
And it's funny because you're not gonna I saw a
Dice article a little earlier. You're not gonna please add
percent of Star Wars fans, nobody. If you made the
best movie of Star Wars or the worst movie, they're
(01:39:58):
never gonna please everybody. So you just make a movie,
like I told Ryan, if if you like I like,
I like Rogue One. I thought it was always very dark.
But if you want the movie that you want to see,
your theories are put up on screen, and then go
direct the movie. Become a director someday, and then you
can make the movie that you want. And let's see
what everybody else says about it. I thought it was
I thought it was pretty cool, and um, there are
(01:40:18):
people like, well, there's too many dizzy and storylines. When
I was like, I didn't think so at all. I
thought Rogue one had way more. There's a lot of
stuff going on. They had to kind of jam into
that two at two hour, two and a half hour package.
But I enjoyed it. Like, Look, I've been the movie
see three different movies in the last week and a half,
and all of them have been good, all have been great,
(01:40:39):
and all of them have been really good to watch
in a movie. That's the other thing is you're not
going to get the Star Wars thing in a movie.
Theater is really rewarding. It's a really rewarding experience, whereas
some movies are just not Some rom coms are just
as good at home they are. Um, but I was
(01:41:00):
it up by it. And then the preview to Jurassic
what's the new Jurassic or something whatever, Jurassic Kingdom. They
didn't show that one for us. They showed it for us,
And my daughter really likes Jurassic and I don't. I
just it's a lot of death and destruction. Didn't we
kill all the dynasats? Yeah, the meteor did actually kill them. Um. Look,
(01:41:25):
every every food that you get. My wife told me
told me this, and I didn't realize how many things
have have dates which you have to throw things out,
like everything does. And um, you know, there are some
things that you can put in your bomb shelter that
that are supposed to last. But if you look down
(01:41:46):
at the bottom of the can, there is a date
to which you throw everything away. And I'm somebody that
I I let things. You know, there are certain things
that I let last longer than others, like cheese is
it doesn't matter to me if cheese has a little
mold on it, because she's is mold. And if you
just cut out the little green stuff, it tastes fine.
It's you're not gonna die from it. It's it's good.
(01:42:10):
But everybody has there's a there's a window. We want
to see the window closing or the born on date,
which means you need to sell by or use by
or whatever. And I think we've gotten that one. I
think we've gotten there with the Seattle Seahawks, because if
(01:42:33):
if you watch this week when they're downfard in nothing,
if you combine it with last week when they got
their teeth kicked in by the Jacksonville Jaguars, and I
understand that people like, well, the hell are these guys
that are injured and they're gonna come back from injury.
You do know that they don't come back better from injury, right,
Like Richard Sherman tearing his Achilles tendant means that when
(01:42:55):
Richard Sherman comes back, he's not gonna be the same
Richard Sherman he was five years ago. He's gonna be
rich Cherman at thirty one years old, coming back from
an Achilles tenant tear. Like you know, I do understand
it's going to Like Kobe, Kobe is getting both numbers
retired tonight, and in the conversations of worst professional contract
negotiations ever, Jim Bust didn't just give him forty six
(01:43:19):
million dollars in the last two years of a deal.
They did it before he had played coming off of
an Achilles tenant tear. So like when Kobe came back,
Kobe wasn't just coming back as Kobe. He was coming
back as mid thirties Kobe. He wasn't just coming back
his mid thirties. He was coming back his mid thirties
Kobe with five knee operations and coming off an Achilles
(01:43:41):
tenant tear. Like that's not prime Kobe. Pete Carroll was
amazing at USC. After his first year of being six
and six, he went eleven and two, twelve and one
eleven and O uh, then they want they lost the
Rose Bowl. To tell Texas, that goes down as zero
(01:44:02):
and zero. But they were undefeated up until that game.
They lost Texas. Even after that, they won the Rose
Bowl three consecutive years, eleven and two, eleven and two,
twelve and one. In two thousand nine, the roof fell in.
In two thousand nine, USC took on Stanford, and Stanford
(01:44:22):
was coached by then Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh, and um,
that was the famous that was a famous what's your deal? Bro? Game? Right?
They shook hands at the end and Pete Carroll's like,
what's your deal bro? And you started to realize that
(01:44:44):
that that Pete Carroll was that Jim Harball was wired
a little bit differently than Pete Carroll. Do you guys
remember that game at all? Andrew Luck was this quarterback
for Stanford. You think Andrew like he only threw for
four yards. Toby Gerhardt ran and for a hundred and
seventy eight yards. Matt Barklay threw three picks. Stanford was
(01:45:07):
up seven and a half. But they've They finished the
final quarter on a kick, scored twenty seven points in
the fourth quarter. In the final score was fifty. The
two men at midfield shook hands. Pete Carroll's like, what's
your deal, bro? That's what yesterday felt like. They dominated
(01:45:33):
the pack twelve for seven years. They had USC, had
streaks of seven straight BCS Bowls, eleven wins, seasons, top
four ap AP finishes, and if you go back and look,
everyone said that was the moment to which it was
all over. It was the Trojan's worst loss since nineteen
(01:45:54):
sixty six. All Right, so mark to day. This is
eight years ago, eight years ago, November two thousand nine.
Now fast forward to yesterday. That's forward to yesterday. Dan
Bayer joins us, of course, they'll give us what else
is going on in the world of sports. Dan kind
(01:46:16):
of felt similar. There are parallels, for sure. I think
that there's there's a The top of the USC peak
was a few years prior to him leaving, and so
you have this mountain climb and then you have this
mountain fall, which maybe you are you are going to
have with the Seattle Seahawks. The only thing that is
maybe just a little different. Is that the Seahawks and
(01:46:37):
this core you can keep it together longer. Obviously you
can't in college. And that's where I think is maybe
maybe the Seahawks just weren't good two years ago when
they were blown out by the Panthers in the playoffs,
or last year when I don't think they were good
when they went when they went to the Super Bowl
and they beat the Packers. The Packers had him beaten,
but they did they found out it was they've always
been a find away team. Sure that you could also
(01:46:59):
then argue, but they then should have beat the Patriots
and that Yeah, So that's the question is and you
touched on this. This is an interesting point, trust me, Doug.
This is gonna pay. But you mentioned it earlier. You
make a trade for Sheldon Richardson, who actually has been
pretty good for the team, but maybe not what you
gave up for it, and Dwayne Brown. Now you don't
have two second round picks and a third round pick
(01:47:20):
in the next two drafts to make those deals. And
now you look at your team and you're saying, wow,
we've lost the legion of boom. That's also why it's
and that's also where this. This team was built based
upon the draft. You know, they did a great job
in the second, third, fourth, fifth round of the draft.
And now you know they're they're they're they're getting away
(01:47:41):
from kind of the core of what made them of
what made them special. But they're the similarities of this.
Like look eleven, five, thirteen and three, twelve and four,
ten and six, ten, five and one last year. Now
you're at eight and six and you're kind of them,
and it's you got the fights you've got in fighting
on Twitter, right, you got dudes fighting teammates, fighting with
other teammates on Twitter. Plus there was the Richard Sherman
(01:48:04):
versus Russell Wilson before the season began, like this is
this is not this is not Kumbay. Yeah, they're not
all holding hands and I don't know how they I
don't know how quickly they fix it. It's going to
be a lot longer than maybe what they would have
hoped because of their salary situation. Jimmy Graham gone next year.
(01:48:24):
I don't think they bring him back. Same with Richard Sherman,
Same with Cam Chancellor. Who knows that Cam chancer all
overplay again. They've got all those pieces that you say
that likely won't be back next year, and now you
don't have high draft picks to replace them, or really
the money to replace those guys. Yeah, it's gonna be tough,
very difficult. What else going on the world sports, Well,
there's news. So the Carolina Panthers Thomas Davis suspended two
(01:48:45):
games for his hit on Davante Adams yesterday. He's gonna
going to appeal that suspension. Panthers also announced that owner
Jerry Richardson stepping aside. NFL Network says he's going to
focus on the sale of the team. Of course, Richardson
under investigation for workplace Msconda to announced yesterday he would
be selling the franchise at the end of the season.
Tina Becker has been named the Panthers chief operating officer. Elsewhere,
(01:49:08):
the NFL Raiders tackle Donald Penn out for the season.
They lost to the Cowboys yesterday. An NFL spokesperson says
referee Jeans Territory was within the rules to measure a
first down with a folded index card during that game.
Cowboys getting Ezekiel Elliott back from his six games suspension.
NFL Network says the ankle injury suffered by Jaguar's wide
receiver Marquise Lee, not likely to keep him out of
(01:49:30):
the playoffs. The Chargers announced that Hunter Henry has a
lacerated kidney suffered in their lost Saturday to the Chiefs,
but he hasn't been ruled out of their Week sixteen
game against the New York Jets. He's got another kidney. Yeah,
that's it. Extra day of rest, you know, since they
played on Saturday. Why not. Absolutely, But the Chargers also
cut their kicker. Yes, Trent vis Coons is out and
(01:49:52):
Nick Roses in. Now. Now, Coons did miss an extra point,
but he's seven and eight a field goals. He ended
in bad. No, and this is with their third kicker
this season. Yes, after Yeah, making a change earlier in
the year. Um At Kobe getting eight and twenty four
retire Tonight. Villanova and Michigan State remained one two in
the AP Top twenty five College Hoops full Arizona State
jumped to three, ducas fourth, with North Carolina rounding out
(01:50:15):
that top five. Mm hmm, yeah, it feels that that
does feel like the end of an era. Look, we
we discussed the Patriots Steelers game a little bit to
start the show, and and my, my, my, there's a
bunch of things to which the Steelers could have done
to win the game. And they were a lot more
competitive even without Antonio Brown than you with and without
(01:50:36):
Ryan Shay's here that then you might might might guess.
Then you might well guess. Um. But there's a couple
of other things which have not been discussed. We'll get
to the rule. There's been a lot of discussion about
Mike Tomlin and his level of aptitude as a head coach.
(01:50:59):
I think he's great at the podium. I think he's
good with the fellas. But man, were they discombbulated there
at the end of that game. Man was he um?
I mean completely and totally discombbulated at the end of
(01:51:20):
that game. Here's what Ben Roethlisberger said. There's Ben Roethlisberger
said after the game, I want to fix bike. It
was I was. I was yelling clock it, umcause I
felt like that was the thing to do with clock
it and get yourself one play, um. And it came
from the sideline. Don't clock it, don't clock it. Well,
at that time, I'm already got the everyone thinks of clocks,
(01:51:41):
So you don't have time to try and get everyone
mind up. So it's UM. I tried to Eli saw
that you know, he kind of ran a quick slant
in there, and at that time you just gotta try
and make a play. And if I didn't make good
enough throw, yeah, I just you know, if you watch it,
if that that did not feel like a championship team. Now,
I'll give you as as the guys in the show. No,
(01:52:04):
And I don't know how much you as listeners know.
So I coached the team basketball team in Israel UM
this summer and one of the things I have learned
and believe or not, we didn't. I played for a
coach that we want eight hundred games. He won eight
hundred games. We I only think once or twice a year.
We practiced last, second place, and we never kind of
timed it out there wasn't. But having covered college basketball
(01:52:27):
for fifteen years, something I've learned that the best of
the best do is they have all these different sorts
of things in their pockets and so um in our
months LI and our month leading up to games, we
would end of practice and of every practice and some
pot we had two days practice. Whatever we would do
situational situational place. Uh, some of it was for them,
(01:52:50):
something was for me. So I knew how long it
took and where exactly I wanted every different player, and
we did at full court. We did it from the
three quarter court, we did from half court, we did
from underneath, We did it with fifteen seconds, with with fourteen, thirteen, twelve,
every different possible incarnation, and then in the games that
(01:53:12):
didn't matter, we do it again at the end of
each quarter. I'd call I'd had a time out. I
called tip. I guess, like, what do you call time
out for? We're up twenty Yeah, I know. I look
at the clock. Eleven seconds. Here's what I want you
to do in eleven seconds. At exactly eight seconds, we're
gonna start doing this. So look, I put most of
(01:53:33):
it on Todd Haley, some of it on Ben Roethlisberger,
and a little bit of on Mike Tomlin. But in
that situation, everyone should be on the same same page
as to what they were trying to do. The shouldn't
be Roethlisberger. Forget about the fact he shouldn't say it.
There shouldn't be any confusion confusion as to what they
want to do. They should know time score situation. Alright,
(01:53:54):
you guys stayed in bounds. We're running the fake spike play.
He didn't even fake spike kid. Even Roethlisberger's like, I
didn't fake spike it. I was calling the clock it
all right? Well, you fake clock it. You never know
if the dB might bite on it, or if the
safety in the middle of the field who ultimately intercepted
the past might not bite on it, or might just
(01:54:14):
stop playing. And oh, yeah, by the way, why are
you running? Uh? Why are you running a post? Why
or why are you running a slant in in that situation?
Why are you running to where other bodies are? It's
one on one. You're hoping one guy is to sleep,
and you throw it up in the air, you run
a little out route. This is not that hard, is it.
(01:54:35):
But that was not a well coached team, There's not.
There's no way you can convince me that, and we can.
Doesn't mean the Steelers shouldn't have won the game because
Jesse James did catch the football and did cross the
plane of the end zone. I'm not disputing that. But
when you're at home, there's no distraction, there's no crowd noise.
(01:54:57):
You have a you have a quarterback who's started in
two Sir Bowls and one both of them. When you
got that going for you, and you look completely discombobulated
at the end of a regular season game, a well
coach team, and how do I know? Because I know
(01:55:20):
that's Those are the things that you're supposed to work on,
because once you get to the end of the season,
you can't change your offense. If you're not hitting much,
you're doing situational stuff. Another big hit, another suspension in
the NFL. More NFL talk. Coming care of True Car.
(01:55:41):

Price from True Car. Now you can know the exact
price you'll pay for your next car. So visit True
Car enjoy more confident car buying experience. Who got suspended
and how does it affect the playoffs? I'll tell you next.

list price, an invoice price. True car shows what other
(01:56:03):
people paid for the car you want. You can recognize
a good price when you're ready to buy a new
or used car. Visit True car and they enjoy more
confident car buying experience. Doug Gottlip Show Fox Sports Radio December,
so you have twelve days, right, twelve days? That right
to December thirteen. Sorry, they's December December eighteen, uh, December eighteen,
(01:56:30):
seven days Christmas. I like bulls, not just the ones
who eat out of mean who doesn't like its bowl
of cereals? Like I like bulls. I do. I don't
know why I shouldn't. I think they're They're total money
grabs for everybody involved. Um, but they're fun and I'm
not offended by them, right, I'm just I'm not like,
(01:56:51):
I'm not into Akron taking on Florid Atlantic, except I
guess I get to see Lane Kiffin. I'm not in
the Louisiana Tech taking on his six and six taken
on SMU, even though SMUs coaches now in Arkansas, not
in the Temple in Florida National or u A B
in Ohio. I am fascinating by the fact that South
Florida is playing Texas Tech in Birmingham, and people are
surprised that people in South Florida have only bought a
(01:57:12):
thousand tickets, Like who in their right mind would leave
Tampa or clear Water or St. Pete or any of
those beach areas to go to Birmingham. Birmingham is a
very nice city if you want to want to live there, right,
I want like to live I have friends in them.
Like it's great, it's great. It's not as muggy as
(01:57:33):
other because of the hills, as other parts of Alabama. Um,
it's like the it's like the Pittsburgh of the South
with with the iron industry. There's some good tech industry
now that's moving in some very good restaurants in Birmingham.
But why why would anyone want to go? Why would
anyone want to go? From Tampa and even Lubbock? Why
would you go to Lubbock to Birmingham? Like that is
(01:57:54):
just an awful, awful location. I'm into San Diego State Army.
I'm into some of these Bowl games. But there's something
I'm really not into, really not into. Let's get let's
get to the press press Like I'll let se Khalil
tape play against Purdue. You guys seen Khalil tape play
(01:58:16):
as a quarterback. He's a great runner as a running quarterback.
He's a great runner. He is a great runner. Not
much of a thrower, buyer. What do you got, Dan?
This is sin Chris stops Porzingis and no go again
for the next tonight. Tonight. It's it's funny you brought
that one up. I'm actually really really happy you did.
(01:58:36):
Um remember they had the Mellow. They had a video
for him, the celebration Mellow coming back to New York, right,
Porzingis didn't play the nick still one. Nothing more appropriate
than mellow. Thanks so much for all you've done, including leaving,
because that's allowed us to win basketball games. Michael Beasley
was the star on Saturday. Panthers livebacker Thomas dave This
(01:59:00):
was suspended two games for his blindside hit on Packer's
wide receiver Davante Adams during yesterday's game. I thought that
the suspension was accurate, you know, like, look, whether or
not he meant to hit him above the shoulder. He did,
and he's been fined previously. And that's those the type
of cheap hits that can lead to serious injury that
you want to get out of football. Good, good, longer
(01:59:22):
next time. Carolina Panthers. By the way, and Tina Becker
has been named the chief operating officer of the franchise,
taking over the day to day operations of the team
from owner Jerry Richardson. Yeah, as long as when Jerry
Richardson a pointed to the CEO, he didn't ask if
you'd shave her legs or see how she looked in jeans,
which was another light stup. Let me let me see,
(01:59:44):
let me see how you look in jeans? Uh, Steeler's
wide receiver, and Tonio Brown called his calf injury eight
miners setback in a tweet set out this morning. Yeah,
the guys say that when they tear their a, c
miners set back for a major comeback like yo, you know. Yes,
Ed says he could return for the playoffs, gonna miss
the rest of the regular season, and you wonder even
(02:00:04):
if he does return, how healthy he will be for Pittsburgh. Um.
Speaking of Pittsburgh, Austin carp of the Sports Business Journal
tweeted today that the Pittsburgh market got a six point
for local rating for the Cowboys Raiders game last night.
That would be the NBC's lowest Sunday Night or b
NBC's lowest Sunday night figure in Pittsburgh since two thousand six. Yes. So,
(02:00:28):
the so the correlation is were they so mad over
the Patriots laws that they didn't want to watch any
more football on Sunday night. Uh yeah, but they also
watched postgame coverage of that could be Steelers stuff, right,
some of them. Some of it you leave your TV on.
Some of it is you're so mad, you know you
want to throw a boot. Three. Yeah, I'm not anymore.
(02:00:53):
That loss is a game where you just watch Bravo
for the next five hours. You don't even touch sports.
I'll say, like, somebody beat Bobby Flake. Cowboys running back
Ezekiel Elliott eligible to return to the team today for
a six game band already meeting with coaches as they
prepare for week sixteens matchup against the stayed in Cabo.
(02:01:14):
That's like the weirdest I mean, I guess if you
can do it, you can train down there. He stayed
at some resort in Cabo for like every day except
for like two days around Thanksgiving. He came back to
the family Thanksgiving all right. Thirty six year old Carlos
Boozer announced his retirement from basketball after playing in China
last season. No more pro hoops for Carlos Boozer. Some
on TV Today love the fact that he he shaved
(02:01:35):
the head to remember when he tried to do that
weird shiny thing on his head to fake like he
had hair. Yes. Uh, Kobe Bryant, Yes, retiring number eight
and twenty four the Lakers are tonight for the Lakers guard,
I thought maybe we could chime in our favorite Kobe
moments of his career. Moment do you have any Doug,
John Ryan? I mean, anyone points is pretty insane. I me,
(02:01:59):
it's the most Kobe thing ever too, to have eighty
one points. I never cheered for Kobe except for the
last game of his career, so it was I don't
care if it was a fake NBA game, right, they
didn't play already took every shot he had sixty in
his last game. That was pretty crazy, John or Ryan,
I like the one game there was the NFC Championship
game day as well. Bae out there and pressed. That
(02:02:22):
was the press. He still got to pick a number.
They're retiring your number, which one both of them? That's
not really how it works. I guess. I'm like, look,
if you can do it, God bless you do it,
but it feels like you should just retire one number.
Connor Barwine will join us tomorrow. UM we will talk
to some liveing in Malibu. I think is. I believe
his bride is pregnant. Believe they announced it on Twitter.
(02:02:44):
Got a bunch stuff to talk about. Plus he was
back and part of that wepen of the Seahawks. Ding dong.
The Seahawks are dead. Are the Falcons dead too? They
gotta win tonight. I think they will. This is the
Doug Gottlip Show.
