Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports. Great to have you with this.
Other's day after Christmas, and it's a day that I'm
not sure Philadelphia Eagle fans are feeling in the holiday spirits.
I know that they got a win last night against
the Oakland Raiders from but when you look at the
big picture, and the big picture is gonna start in

(00:22):
a little less than two weeks when the NFL playoffs
get underway, I am not sure the Philadelphia Eagles are
as much of a threat as we thought they were
just a couple of weeks ago. And this is even
by the way, this is even when Carson Wentz immediately
went down. I know some felt that the sky was falling.
Others felt, hey, the Eagles are a good all around team.

(00:42):
But when you're battling to the death against the Oakland
Raiders and what is a meaningless game for them in
Week sixteen, I think there is there are signs of
big time trouble for the Philadelphia Eagles despite them clinching home. Look,
I wouldn't say there was a big time trouble, but
what I would say is I think they needed a
game like this. They been on such a high even
when uh Carson Wentz went down. Nick Foles came in

(01:05):
and said, hey, look, I'm a gun slinger. I'm gonna
come out here. I'm gonna do my thing. We've know,
we know the success he's had, uh with anyone not
named Jeff Fisher, right, So so we we know what
type of quarterback he is. We know he has confidence
and as if with a backup, that's what you want.
If I'm an offensive lineman, our star goes down, our

(01:25):
m VP candidate goes down, the backup comes in. I
want them to have confidence. I want them to have swagger,
as the kids say. I don't even know if they're
still saying that these days. Um, So, I think they
needed a game against a hard nosed Raiders team who
are trying to figure some things out themselves to get
themselves ready to go into the playoffs, because the playoffs

(01:45):
are ugly alright, the team is preparing for you. It's
win or go home. So everything is not gonna be roses.
You're gonna have turnovers, You're gonna do this, You're gonna
have to recover from things during the game in the
playoffs when there's no aim next week, give you lose.
So I think this was good for him. This is
a team that now as home field advantage throughout the

(02:06):
NFC playoffs, so that was at least earned last night
with their victory. But even it's the it's the whole
body of work of the Philadelphia Eagles. It seems like
it's been a different defense for the last month. There
were opportunities where the offense could pick up for the defense,
and there were times this season where the defense maybe
in fact also picked up for the offense. There were

(02:27):
times where we thought, wow, this defense of Philadelphia is dominant.
Remember even early ont of the season, there was talk
that the defense was playing so well that Jim Schwartz
was maybe gonna have more power than Doug Peterson and
there was a power battle between the two. Well, now
you look at both sides of the football and Nick
Foles was was not good last night. And if you
don't believe me, here him. These wins are tough wins

(02:51):
in the NFL are tough. This is a crazy, sloppy game. Um,
and I thought our defense played, um wonderful, give us
the opportunity. I lose five turnovers, that's huge, So this
one was big. They turned the ball over five times.
So the defense did their part last time, including a
meaningless touchdown. But the fact is there were times when
the offense could pick up for the defense and vice versa.

(03:14):
Now I'm not sure if that margin of error is
there in Philadelphia. We just saw it last night. So
the defense, it's the bad Raiders. It doesn't matter. So
what what you have to realize in the NFL is
no matter if a team is going to the playoffs
or if a team is going home, uh in another
week or so, there's still games, right, They're still Pro

(03:36):
Bowl players. There's still all world players, all pro players
on whatever team you play. All right, maybe not Cleveland,
but you know there actually maybe a couple, but everybody
else that could be the problem. But the fact of
the matter is if you look at what Philadelphia, Philadelphia
has been great on third down. They've been one of
in the top five of the league the entire year

(03:58):
on third down conversions. And they were awful. Yes, they
were one for fourteen third down efficiency, but the defense
forced five turnovers. Right, so you're looking at it like, okay,
we were terrible on on third down and extenuated extenuated uh,

(04:18):
extenuated circumstances and uh driving down the field. We gave
our defense no time to rest. But yet they still
came out against Derek Carr, those receivers and they still
forced five turnovers. So it is, hey, we're not playing
that good. Can you guys pick up the slack? They
still did as bad. I don't want to say it's bad,

(04:39):
but as poorly as the Philadelphia Eagles defense had been
playing in the last couple of weeks, they stepped up,
force five turnovers and put the Philadelphia Eagles in a
in an opportunity to win the game, which they did.
It is week sixteen, so we're through sixteen weeks. There's
one game left in the regular season. I would have
to say, looking at that performance the last night, if

(05:02):
you're the Vikings, if you're the Rams, if you're the Panthers,
if you're the Saints, heck you're fortunate enough. If you're
the Falcons or Seahawks to get the face Philadelphia. I
would think that after watching last night, you made me
feel a little bit better about yourself. And and the
the fact is is when you lose a Pro Bowl
quarterback like Carson Wentz, you're going to take a drop MVP. Yes, yes,

(05:26):
absolutely that that that is there. It's just my issue
what I saw in the game against the Rams when
foals came in and the Eagles were ended up that
ended up still getting a win in Los Angeles. It's
a really good win for them. That was a solid victory.
But last week against the the Philadelphia Eagles against the
New York Giants, they give up twenty nine points to

(05:47):
a bad Giants team. And now you've got that that
margin of error that I talked about when you're gonna
go up against the Vikings defense. I don't want to
what Nick Foles would do against Minnesota if he if
he can't do it against Oakland, that my concern. If
the Rams end up scoring like they did in the
first meeting with Philadelphia, there's no way Folds in that
offense can keep up. I just I don't think that

(06:09):
the Philadelphia Eagles right now, I'm not even sure they're
the fifth best team in the NFC from what we
saw last Yeah, I mean Carolina, at least with Cam
and the defense is playing better. The love what the
Saints have done. When you look at the Rams and
and the Vikings, I just I look at Philadelphia and
I just I don't see it. I I wanted to believe.

(06:29):
I wanted to believe that Nick Foles was the reason
when they put up thirty four against the Giants, that
he would be able to pick up that slack that
the defense didn't do. And I get what you're saying,
the defense did their job last night. But again we're
talking about a team that had nothing to play for
in the Oakland Raiders, and I just think that the
the NFC playoff picture has just completely changed, even though
it goes through Philadelphia. Well, the misconception is around this

(06:50):
time of year, teams that aren't go into the playoffs,
players don't have anything to play for. That's false. It's
actually they have more to play for individually on that team.
You'll have a speech like this during the week when
you know that these games don't count for the playoffs
or anything like that. You hear this. This is a
flat out, no questions asked, job security. You are performing

(07:17):
for your right to be here next year. They're absolutely.
It is happening all over the league for those teams
that aren't. It was even questions on if Jack Doe
Real will be back next year, right, So everybody is
playing for their job. So when you see these guys

(07:38):
out there and they're busting there, but you know Irving
and Mac and these guys are getting after the quarterback.
It's a sense of pride number one. Those two guys
aren't going anywhere. Those are the cornerstones of the Raiders defense.
But you look at that Raiders defense with um Bowman
and those linebackers. I mean, these guys are hard, those

(07:58):
Pro Bowl players who have a sense of pride. But
the younger guys, the guys that are on the fence,
they're playing for their job security period. So next week
it'll be the same thing. It's not an easy win.
These teams are not going to come out there and
be like, hey, we don't have anything to play for,
so we're just gonna roll over fair enough. I will

(08:20):
give you that the Raiders played hard last night, but
their level is not to what you're going to face
when you have to go against minutes. Absolutely not. But
the one thing Philadelphia has nobody else in the NFC
has its home is that a tough place to play.
I mean, because we know how crazy the fans are
when their teams are bad. But when you're like when

(08:43):
you're in a Statium. We know how crazy the super
Dome can be when it's a dome, and how lot
it can be in Kansas City and Seattle. But through
the Philadelphia fans actually make it difficult on the opposition.
When they go to they do make a difficult on
the opposition. But it's not just the fans, it's the
whole thing. It's the travel. It's the being uncomfortable when
you're at home and you're sleeping in your bed and

(09:04):
you don't have to travel and you can keep your
routine the same it's been all year. That makes a difference, right,
So now you play Saturday, you play Sunday, things move
up a little bit. You gotta get on the plane,
you gotta have this type of practice, you gotta go
all of it. All of those things play into it,
and of course you get to the game. You still

(09:24):
have to play the game. But ask New England if
if a home fiel advantage throughout the playoffs is important, right,
and that they lost it and they lost the Denver
and that's the best coach quarterback tandem we've ever seen
in the NFL. And they know how important that Steeler
game was two weeks ago to win that to put
themselves in position to have home field throughout the playoffs.

(09:47):
That is the key. People aren't talking about that, but
as long as Philadelphia has that, and look, Nick, folks
can play all right, they can play, their defense can
play things. It's just gonna take a little adjustment period
and and you know, hopefully next week if if I'm Philadelphia,
those guys are playing, right, those guys are out there playing.
They're trying to get themselves, you know, uh acclimated to

(10:10):
to being on the same page. Uh, Everything is different.
When a new signal caller comes in, everything changes, snap count, uh, timing,
everything is different. So the more they can get live
game action with Nick Foles behind, you know, behind the center,
then the better there be when a playoffs start in
two week. What I did find interesting and there's a

(10:30):
I'll take the good and the bad with the Philadelphia Eagles,
because I do think last night was mostly an awful
night for them. The good part that I saw from
was that it seems they've actually made a decision now
on who they're running backs are going to be. It's
going to be j Agi and maybe the Garret blunts
will spell him in certain spots or Corey Clement will
come in, but they aren't going with four different backs

(10:52):
where the most back gets seven carries and you got
fourteen carries. Seems like now he's getting acclimated. But Alshot
Jeffrey last night didn't have a catch. Zach Ertz had
fourteen targets. And so when you're when you're when you're
an opposing defense and you know that Nick Foles only
trust his tight end, I just don't know how dangerous
that offense can be anymore. That was the great thing

(11:13):
about Wednesday. Had so many targets. He would hit Trey Burton,
he would hit Elshon Jeffrey. And now if Nick Foles
is just focusing on zach Ertz makes him pretty one dimension.
But that's all about being comfortable. Like I said before,
he has no rapport with al Sean Jefferies yet. Right,
so when you see X Jordy Nelson, what what what?

(11:36):
And I asked him what it feels like to not
have the number one guy in the lineup? All right,
terrific all pro receiver. He gets no balls because it's
not that level of comfortability between him and and Brett Huntley.
It's the same with look all year, Nick Foles has
been throwing the practice squad guys. All right, maybe he

(11:58):
feels comfortable comfortable with the right in then he does
with the other receivers. But that's what last night was about,
the week before and next week will be and all
of this practice in between is to get comfortable with
those number one receivers. He just doesn't have. They don't
have the timing down. They just don't I and it's
gonna will have a bye week to figure it out

(12:20):
one more regular season. But I just have to think
that if you're Sean McVeigh and if you're Mike Zimmer,
at least your your players on on the Rams and
Vikings or Panthers, you're starting to say Christmas Eve night
or Christmas Night was a little bit better than than
what we thought. And the fact that Zach arths their
leading receiver anyway in terms of yards, then it's only fitting.

(12:43):
You know, they ran the same to try to get
into field garrange. They're the same thing, like five different
five times in a row. And then I mean, you
gotta again again, gotta do what you know. You gotta
do what you know. Man, you don't you don't want
to put any extra pressure on your back, cup quarterback.
That's the that's the point. I can't wait to Doug
Peterson brings a post that no doubt for his play

(13:04):
calling on because there's just gonna be five place. He's
from Salam. I'm Dan Buyer. This is the Doug Gottlieb
Show on Fox Sports Radio. Glad to have you on
this day after Christmas. You can always reach us on
social media Twitter specifically, I'm at Dan Buyer on Fox
and you can get from at from Salam. Coming up next.
It was a big day for the NBA yesterday, but

(13:25):
who was the real loser on Christmas Day? We tell
you next year on Fox Sports Radio. It's a Doug
gottlib Show on Fox Sports Radio. I'm Dan Buyer. He's
from Salam. As we are in for Doug today. I
love to hear from you on social media eight seven
seven nine nine on Fox at eight seven seven nine
six three six nine or on Twitter. You could get
me at Dan Buyer on Fox. I think the Eagles

(13:47):
are done from giving them some hop You can find
him on Twitter at e from Salam and I just
say that they're dead because it's Super Bowl or bust.
That's that's just how I look. I get it, I understand.
But the fact that the matter is they put themselves
in prime position. If something like this words to happen
to any of their key players, you gotta remember they
you know, or down there all pro all world left tackle.

(14:10):
They still managed to bounce back. They lost the right
tackle for a couple of games, they still managed to
push through. So it's it's all about a culture of
a team as well to be able to deal with adversity.
And I mean, and I'm always talking about New England
because they've pretty much wrote the book on that. Right,
do your job, next man up, Drew Bledsoe, Tom Brady

(14:31):
and everybody in between. They just keep moving and they'd
never make excuses. So I'm not here for the old
it's that they had a chance, they could have done it.
I'm not here for that. Nick Foles has proven that
he can play, he can play in this system, So
let's roll the dice and let's go out there and
continue to play well. Mike tweets and Dan check the
numbers on the Phillies d at home. He also pointed

(14:53):
out touchdown catches for Alston, Jeffrey and Nelson Aglar against
the Giants. I'm just saying, the marching of air has
gone out the window. That's as long as as as
well as everyone else's in uh. In the playoffs, you
can no matter who you got playing quarterback, Tom Brady
comes out and throws three interceptions, they probably won't win.

(15:14):
That's just how it is. And and a lot to
do with matchups as well, and they heck, that's any playoffs,
that's NFL or NBA. Yesterday was also a big day
in the NBA with the five Christmas Day games, joining
us to look back at what was a special Christmas Day.
The only thing that wasn't special about it is we
didn't get the full Christmas Day uniforms. They kind of
did away with those basketball insiders Eric Pinkas you can

(15:37):
also see him on NBA TV joining us now, Hey Eric,
Mary Christmas, thanks so much for taking the time. Alright,
happy holiday, since guys, let's let's start with what was
the game of the day yesterday. And I know it
ended up with the Timberwolves in the Lakers playing in
l A and you had the first game of the
Knicks and Sixers, but Sandwich gonna be three in between.
You have these three games of top level teams and

(15:59):
it starts did with an NBA Finals rematch. What are
the positives that the Cavaliers can take from a loss
in Oakland against a Steph Curry less Warriors team from yesterday. Well,
the good news is that they're also without a high
scoring guard, right, so they're hanging in there. Obviously they
love to win, right, So no one's gonna sit here

(16:21):
and say they're thrilled about losing without Steph Curry. But
if you add in Isaiah Thomas to the mix, all
that attention on Lebron James shifts because he's not always
going to have the ball. It's gonna take a minute
for them to figure out how to play together. But
I mean, these are two high level basketball players. When
you add in someone who's such an impossible cover, I mean,
Isaiah Thomas is one of the quickest guards in the league,

(16:42):
and he's really just so skilled a scoring and then
he can also give you six seven assists a night,
they're gonna be a much better team. So this was
just a preliminary view of what what the matchup is, right,
But it's gonna change. It's gonna change when Steph Curry
gets back, and they'll certainly change when Isaiah Thomas gets back.
I can't I just can't wait to see what the
calves are once they figure that out. For me, I

(17:04):
was watching that and yeah, I get Isaiah Thomas is
a high, high volume shooting guard. He's gonna give you
a lot of points. But the problem that I see
in this particular matchup is what he doesn't bring on
the defensive end. And I think that's where Cleveland got
better having having Crowder in and you know, Lebron James
not always having to guard someone like Kevin Durant because

(17:27):
you have another big body who can play defense. But
when you add Isaiah Thomas into the mix, it doesn't
help them defensively. And I just don't see them getting
over the hump even with him in the lineup. Yeah,
you can argue defensively, you know. On on the positive,
Isaiah is a pest. I mean he is not tall.
You know, he's not gonna be tall, but it's still

(17:50):
he puts gives a lot of ball pressure. Uh, and
he's gonna he's gonna get it your dribble, so he
bothers your dribble. But obviously you can shoot over him.
But that's there's a certain amount of when your offense
is better and you're scoring or you're playing more efficiently,
your defense has more chance to get set. So you're

(18:10):
not wrong, absolutely right that he is not someone who's
gonna say, oh, I'm going to join this team and
suddenly the defense on the Calves is going to improve.
Their defense really hasn't. Even last year, their defense wasn't
what it needed to be. Uh, And that that's that's
a problem. Crowder was a great addition because he is
someone who can fight. And if there's a move to
make for the Calves, I don't know who they would

(18:30):
give or whatnot, but if there's a move to make
it the deadline, it has nothing to do with offense.
It has entirely to do with defense and and getting length,
more length. Someone who could do more of what Shamfort
is supposed to do, really help get out there and fight. Man.
It's it's it's I can't wait to see if if
this is what happens and we get the finals again,
I can't wait to see it. But I would like

(18:50):
to see the Calves have another defender on that roster.
Deeric Pinks joining SU's also the lead Lakers writer for
the Bleacher Report, in addition to his work that he
does for NBA TV and Basketball Insiders. And I want
to get to the Lakers in a sec, but one
more on last night, because the biggest story of calvs.
Warriors was the foul that wasn't called on Kevin Durant,
or the fouls that weren't called on Kevin Durant on

(19:11):
the late drive by Lebron James. Were you shocked there
was no whistle on a foul called on that play.
I don't know if shocked is the right word. I
I thought it was a foul, or normally, in most
such circumstances, you'd think that'd be a foul, and especially
when it's Lebron, because Lebron he draws a ton of fouls.
I mean, he's Lebron, right, But the gravity of the Warriors,

(19:34):
it's different than than any other team, just like the
gravity of Lebron. You know, Lebron fouled out like once
in his entire career, So it could have gone either way.
I mean, it wasn't like so blatant that it's it
was just, Oh, that was a horrible miss call. I
thought it was a foul, but in in live action,
I'm gonna stay fine whatever. Ultimately it's I don't think

(19:54):
it's important. It's gonna come down to a playoff series
down the road, hopefully an NBA Finals series. This was
just a moment in time in the regular season. It
was a funky situation. I didn't think the rest were
perfect there, but that's part of the game. And uh
Man Durant though he did a really good job on
on Lebron, Matt Dwayne really bothered Lebron. And and look,

(20:17):
I I wasn't surprised by the car are the no call,
I should say, because they let him play the entire game.
That's exactly what you want, especially when you're talking about
playoff basketball. It was guys flying on the ground, it
was some wrestling matches. It was guys, you know, up
in people's faces. It was a lot of contact. I

(20:37):
like that because now you're playing right now, you're not
getting bailed out. Now you have to execute. You have
to move the ball, you have to hit the open shot,
you gotta box out and rebound. So I like when
when when the refs let him play, it's not a
problem for me. People were complaining about that one foul.
Let's look earlier in the game, Kevin direct and all

(20:59):
from all p poses should have been kicked out of
the game. Uh, he got an early tech and then
minutes later he shoved the ball in in well in
called an's chest or something like that, which the rev
blew the whistle and said, hey cut it out instead
of giving him a tech and throwing them out. So
that could have that that to me, let me know

(21:19):
the type of game the rest were gonna let happen. Yeah,
it was a Christmas Day game. If this is a
different game, maybe that's a that's a tech and maybe
he's tossed. But in this Marquee game, you know, the
rest aren't They know the banders standers a business and
they're not acting on anyone's You know that the league
isn't directing him or anything like that. They're very independent

(21:40):
from the league. But that said, they understand and so
whatever they let them play. Like I said, I wasn't shocked.
But if we break it down frame by frame, we
could argue a whole bunch of calls. And it was
a fun game. I mean, I it was. These are
these are two probably the returning champs and and the
you know, the second if I'm hoping for you know,

(22:02):
part four. I mean, it'd be nice to see the
Celtics or some of these other teams, or the Thunder
even or something crazy like that, or the Rockets. But
I mean, until I see something otherwise, I think these
are two teams in the finals. Eric Pinks joining us
here on Fox Sports Radio on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
Easy from Salam, I'm Dan buyers weren't for Doug today.
You can get Eric on Twitter at Eric Pinks and

(22:23):
that's Eric with a C. Who did the Lakers miss
Moore last night? A Lonzo ball or Brandon Ingram and
that lost to the tiber Wolves. Huh yeah, I think
that's I guess I would definitely say Alonzo when I
think about it, because where they fell apart was late
in the fourth, or rather early in the fourth, when
they just ran out of guards to play, so they
were you can't play guys forty eight minutes. These are

(22:46):
these are young guys that are just you know, they're athletic,
but there's a point where it's a diminishing return. And
so you had Tyler Ennis and you have Alex Caruso,
who's on a two way, and I think Alex Cruso
has a chance to be an NBA player at some point.
But this is you know, he's still barely played a
few games in this league, and the they just got

(23:06):
ran out right. It was just like a few minutes
and then boom, the game is over. If you have
Blonds the ball out there, the rotations better, You're able
to play Jordan Clarks in the minutes you want Uh
in the role that he should be in, which is
as a reserve. Right, I think he's one of the
best reserves. You can argue he's a six Man of
the Year candidate, maybe not a top one, but at
least in the mix. And that's a big part of

(23:27):
Because of what blondses us so they rent, they weren't organized.
Alonzo helps helps keep them organized. He's his shooting has
been improved, but he's also a really solid defender. I mean,
I've been really impressed by how he defends on the ball.
He's still that's that's an area where he needs to grow,
but as a team defender, shot blocker, even Uh, they
definitely mis Salonso now Ingram. He's he's an important part

(23:48):
of what they're doing. I'm not trying to put him
down in any way. He's been great this year. Really
impressed with how much he's grown from year one to
year two. But they definitely were a shorthanded the other day.
I would say, you know, watching lines will say what
you want about him, all right, you can you know,
can't shoot whatever it is the presence he has when
he's on the court. The guys, like you said, they relaxed.

(24:10):
Everybody knows their role. He does play good defense. He's
a tall guard, he has long arms. But I would
even venture to stay. They really missed the Brook Lopez
yesterday because Karl Anthony Towns, he just went to town.
Uh pin point punt intended so for me having three
guys out of the starting lineups, and you gotta remember

(24:31):
late in that game, they made a run and they
were in prime position to continue uh that run and
maybe pull that game out. I saw positive things from
the Lake, and of course I'm buys. I'm a Lakers
fan big time. Uh So I'm rooting for him and
sometimes I have to turn the TV off from the
look away because they do stupid things like not be

(24:51):
able to shoot free throws and you know, not get
back or in transition defense. But for the most part,
I couldn't watch him last year. This year, I can
watch the games because they're entertaining and you can actually
see these guys growing together. They're young nucleus and you
throw Brook Lopez in there, who's having a tremendous year

(25:13):
in my opinion, and in the league where they're only
one or two big men, and last night they got
exposed by one of the young great big men in
this league. Uh, and they just didn't have any answer
for him. Yeah, they're they're Lopez is sort of on
a limited diet. I think he's been really solid for them,
and it doesn't always show in the numbers or his

(25:33):
individual stats, but he's he's a he's like a grown up.
You know, you need grown up something, right, And so
maybe you don't even finish if he's in your rotation.
Maybe he's not on the on the floor late in
the game, but it changes the whole mix and so
now the rotations better. So if Randall's finishing the game
at center, I think he's been great as a backup center,

(25:54):
maybe that works. But if you're getting hurt by the
size of Towns, you go with Lopez. If if if
Towns shooting from the outside, you go with someone smaller
who's got more mobility. So there there, You're just you're
taking away the cards from the deck. And this is
not uh, this is not a team that has a
stack deck, right, this is a team of young guys
trying to figure their way out. I think Kyle Kuzman

(26:16):
has been a revelation. He's been exactly what this team needed,
just somebody who unexpectedly was way better than everyone thought.
And they got that. And that's to get that with
the twenty seventh pick, a guy who probably should be
a top five pick, is fantastic. And I think Alonso
is going to grow into who he is. Kusman is
a couple of years older, Ingram still really young. He's

(26:37):
basically the same age as Alonso. So when these guys
come of age, I think there's a lot to be
optimistic about. I do think the team needs more veteran
leadership from you know, star type players. That's how you
finished games. Yeah, Lebron, Paul George. You could throw de
Marcus Cousins if he's not if he's one of two,
if he's the only vet star you get, then I
don't think you get a leadership positive there. But if

(27:00):
he's one of two stars that come Paul George and
DeMarcus Cousins, I think then you've got some some real
talent and then you've got these young guys developing obviously alongshot.
That's what the Lakers are trying to do. But we'll
have to wait until the summer and see if anything
crazy happens. In the meantime, these guys are trying to
play with all these trade rumors and salary cap and
you know, all this math stuff that they know, Hey,

(27:24):
I might not be at Julius Randall, Jordan Clarks and
news guys here all the rumors, they know that they
may be casualties of this big, vast plan. So a
little bit of turmoil there. I think it's hurt them
a bit, all that nonsense. He's the lead Lakers writer
for Bleacher Report. Catch him on NBA TV and also
stuff with basketball insiders Eric Binkas. Thanks Eric, I have
a great new year and we'll do it again soon. Alright,

(27:44):
guys happy, This is the Doug Gottlieb Show. He's from
salam I'm Dan Buyer and for once he from for once,
the NFL replay wasn't the worst replay in sports. We'll
tell you why next, But first David gascon fills us
in as the Bulls are starting to rev up, as
we are in that gap between Christmas Day and New

(28:05):
Year's Day. Yeah, it's starting day, it's starting listen. I'll
say this much. The San Diego State Army game was
pretty dark. Yeah, that was a That was a heck
of a game. So I'll say that much. But the
game right now that you were talking about is the
heart of Dallas ball Oliver eyes are honest. Down in one,

(28:25):
give it the Zack Moss first down, yardage, second level,
into the open field, forty He's going on five. It's
a touchdown. It's a touchdown for Zach Boss UT's radio network.
Moss has ten carries for nineties six yards in the score.
Utah leads right now in the third quarter seventeen to three.
Later on today we get Duke Northern Illinois and the

(28:46):
Quick Laying Bowl, and then later on tonight Cactus Bowl
u c l A and Kansas State. Now switching over
quickly to the National Football League, Redskins nose guard Ziggy
Hood has done for the season the fraction elbow. Tennessee
Titans head co Mike Malarkey didn't rule out using running
back to Marco Murray for weeks seventeen. Just yet. He's
gonna Sprain l c L Vans Joseph City plans on

(29:09):
using Paxton Lynch as a starting quarterback and the finale
against Kansas City and Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians does
not plan stepping down after this season expires. In the
NBA l A Times, his report that Blake Griffin still
two weeks away from return to the hardwood court. The
Sprain m c L fellas the bowls that are rolling
on to David Men, it's in the heart of Dallas.

(29:31):
It's the Zack spys Is that what it is. That's lace,
that's the chicken. It's the fast food chicken place that
has a bowl. When when would it stop? Well, it
has to come it come on, man. Well here, I look,
I'm a fan of a lot of bowls because when
I was in college, only like seven bowls And if
you aren't edit Power five, then you didn't get the chance.

(29:53):
When we went ten and two one, you didn't go
to any bowl like it that's just how it was.
But now I mean you we should play again. We
should play a game, maybe not today, maybe later on
in the week about name that bowl and it's true
or false if these bowls actually exists, and I promise you,

(30:14):
I promise you some of the names, because if this Zaxby,
if Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl was one of the choices,
I would be like, I can't be red with the
new New Year's Six that they have as part of
the Rose and Sugar. Remember that it was the Peach
Bowl for so long in Atlanta, and Chick fil A

(30:34):
took over and it just became the Chicken Lay Bowl.
Now it's the Chick fil A Peach Bowl because it's
part of the New Year's Six. They wanted the peach
in the cotton, the rose to all. But there are
some bowls that just stay the same. By the way,
there are only three schools that were Bowl eligible this
year that did not make it to a bowl. Western Michigan,
uh U t s A, University of Texas at San Antonio,

(30:56):
and I believe Buffalo. The fact that Florida State is
playing in the bowl, they get bullet the last game,
the last week of college football. That's crazy to me.
You win six games you shouldn't. There was a question
whether their FCS opponent was actually ineligible to count. They
said that the numbers for Delaware State were good. Hey,

(31:18):
the fact of the matter is they're here. Just just
enjoy it. What's hard to enjoy. What's worse the amount
of bulls that you that that that annoys you, or
the lack of a foul call down Lebron James yesterday
the Bowls. I look that play. To me, it was
indicative of how the game was played. I would have

(31:40):
been matter if there was a foul call. Yes, he
found him on the blowby with the reach across. Then
he found him again up across the head on the block.
I get it, I understand, But how many times have
reft miscalls? It doesn't matter. They still were in position,
They still were there. It was a great game. I
could watch that matchup every day. I think that's two

(32:01):
of the top two players in the league going at it.
And Kevin Durant took on the challenge like yo, look
it's my house now. He wants to stake his claim
for the throne, and I get it. Lebron James is
in his fifteenth year. He's having one of the best
seasons of his career. But did one true unguardable force

(32:22):
in the NBA. It's Kevin Durant period. It's nothing you
can do to guard Kevin Durant. Nothing very true there,
there's it's actually the first thing you've said in forty minutes.
I agreed with No, I'm just kidding, but I'm not
the only one who disagrees with you on the follow
call because Lebron James disagrees. I lost it. I lost

(32:42):
it on the left wing, um, and it got me
a little bit. But I lost that one. But the
one right before, obviously the overturn oneot we found me twice. Um.
But whatever it look, we agree. I said he found
him twice. I agree the fact that it wasn't called
it was like, okay, let's move on. You know what

(33:02):
annoys me is when you look on replay and you
see the following. It's so easy to be like, alright, Calves,
just keep the ball, but like it really is, but
then you replay it and you gotta see it. Well,
it went off, Lebron because because by the letter of
the law. But in any any pickup game anywhere else.
If it was a follow, just big here, just run

(33:24):
it back and keep the ball. But they didn't. And
it was a three point game at that time, and
there were less than thirty seconds to go on the clock,
and that's what cost him. And that's the that's why
replay is so annoying to me in the NBA and
situations like that, because they have to follow it. It
was as bad as Al Riverron's explanation of Calvin Benjamin
as he's trying to go piece by piece. Nobody would

(33:45):
have had a problem if they said, you know what,
Calves just taken out again, You're not by three, it's yours.
Every everybody would have been good by it. But the
ref say, this is how we gotta do it. That's
why I replay on the NBA stunk yesterday. It was
worse than the NFL. Easy from Salam. I'm Dan Buyer.
This is Fox Sports Radio on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Again.
You can reach us on Twitter whether you agree or
disagree with me, or disagree with you from get from

(34:07):
at from Salam, and you can reach me at Dan
Buyer on Fox. It is a big day for Bowls.
But it's another big day for a college football program,
a really big day. Will explain next year on Fox
Sports Radio. Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. He's
he from Salam I'm Dan. Buyers were in for Doug today.
We mentioned there's three game bowl games going on today. Also,

(34:28):
you can kind of say it's officially the last day
of the non chip. Kelly erat U c l A
Jet Fish, the interim coach for their Cactus Bulls, showed
on with Kansas State tonight. But once that's out of
the way, a new era of U c l A
football begins. It's gonna be a good era as well.
You know, we know what typically does, especially uh at
the college level, and he wasn't awful in the pros either,

(34:50):
you know. So I'm sure he's out recruiting right now
getting the type of players that that he thinks he
can he can win with. Moving along, So what do
you thing, how long do you think it will take
two years? One year before I think it will take
two to Yeah, I think it'll be too And I
mean you're competing in that division, not even old conference,
in that division it's USC and then you you know,

(35:13):
one year maybe Arizona State, one year Ape maybe Arizona
or Utah or the fact is, you just gotta keep
up with USC and I think that's gonna take a
couple of years. He's he from Salam. I'm Dan Buyer,
and it's time to play a game. This is game
time side on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Ah. Yes, And

(35:39):
I just realized that when I give Bubbo the signal,
I'm just making hand gestures that mean nothing. So I'm
just I'm making up stuff. I'm bringing in David Gascon
because he is arriving and we're gonna park him to
the left. Hello, da you get me careful though with
bobboys from Englewood hand language. You know, he gave me,

(35:59):
he gave me my own I'm not from Inglewood Central Home.
A big difference different. He gave me a different hand signal.
Damn No, you know I'm number one. What game are
we playing today? Let's take a look inside this bag

(36:22):
and we got yeah, what are the chances? All right, gentlemen,
will play a little game of what are the chances?
So we'll start off with an easy one for both
of you, gentlemen. Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison sent
it one year contract with the New England Patriots today.
Harrison didn't start for the Steelers at all this season
and only touched the field in five games. So what

(36:44):
are the chances Harrison gets on the field for New England.
I hit scale of zero from go ahead zero being none,
I would say, I think there's yeah. I think it's
a nice nine. He'll be on the field an impact
about one percent. I I don't, I'm not sold. I

(37:06):
think if Pittsburgh could have used him, they would have
used Now that I think, um, I think first of all,
I've blocked him before. I've also blocked Dwhite Freeney. So
you see what Dwight Freeney is doing, right, You see
what he did last year for Atlanta. Right. You don't
have to play twenty plays a game, but as a

(37:27):
defensive pass rusher, all you need is that one play
to change the trajectory of a game. And I believe
even right now, as much as he works out, as
much as he stays in shape, he can do he
can have that impact on a one play. And watch
you be against the Steelers. I'm telling you, Oh my god, oh,

(37:47):
James Harrison said. We heard it on the Sunda Night
broadcast a couple of weeks ago. If you knew he
was gonna be so limited in Pittsburgh for playing time,
you never would have signed it and never would have went.
Now he's a patriot. I'm just looking forward to his
workout videos that you'll see, like on sports Illustration It
he's like deadlifting a thousand pounds ridiculous and it makes
my body hurt just talking about that. I covered James

(38:09):
Harrison at the Super Bowl. I believe it was Super
Bowl forty three when they were taking on the Cardinals.
I know that was Super Bowl forty three, but I
think it was that one. I had a recorder that
was kind of like a Palm pilot sort of thing.
At the time. It was new technology, and there was
like this feedback that was going on. It had nothing
to do with my recorder, but because mine looked different,
he thought it was mine, so he moved it out

(38:30):
of the way. I didn't argue. I said, okay, alright,
I'm just not gonna get James Harrison sound today. That's
that's totally fine, and he's not the type of guy
that you would sit across from the NB into an
argument like he's just like I'd be like, oh, okay, Jannet,
we got Yeah. I think about that spot in Jurassic
Park with the water and the t Rex just coming
near and the water is just like shaking his gentleman

(38:54):
on a number two. It's a win and you're in
situation for the Atlanta Falcons against the Carolina Panthers this weekend.
Panthers are also playing for the NFC South Crowns, so
won't be a gimme for them either. What are the
chances Atlanta gets in zero? You don't think that, I
really don't, and say what she would need to win

(39:14):
and then right, but I just I don't even think
they win the game. I think these are two teams
on two different paths. I think Carolina has figured something out.
They are okay with Cam Newton taking to the bulk
of the carries. And I think Christian McCaffrey is the
X factor. I think what he brings to them offensively,

(39:35):
especially out of the backfield, I don't I don't think
Atlanta can match up and and something that's going on
between Julio and and and and Matt right, it's just
not They're not connecting like you know they had they
had been earlier in the year. I am not a
believer in the Falcons, and I've seen what Carolina has
done of late and the defense is a lot better
and getting after the quarterback. And yeah, it's a camp show.

(39:56):
I have him fourth. By the way my m v
P voting. I love what Cam has done. I just
think there's gonna be enough mistakes that the Falcons somehow
will take advantage and end up winning a game that's
like seventeen. Just it just seems like that that way
in the NFC South. Well, the beautiful thing with those
two games too, it'll be on at the same time,
both on Fox, so we will not take disappoint with

(40:18):
a week's seventeen now and come for both of those teams. Well,
thank you very much, David. That was a little game
time on the Doug Gottlieb Show. He's from Salam I'm
Dan Buyer. That's how we wrap things up with the
hand signals. Bubbo. Now know what I'm doing, and he
knows what I'm doing. I from is totally making fun
of me, and I would do something about it, but

(40:40):
I fram's got like a foot on me, So I'm
not going to. As we get closer to the NFL playoffs,
still one hurdle to climb in the NFL's regular season. Boy,
does time go fast? Does it go as fast for
NFL players as it does for US fans, because it
seems just like yesterday we were watching the Chiefs and

(41:00):
Patriots opening up on Thursday Night football to open up
the season, and just like that it comes to an end. No,
it's longer for us because you gotta remember O. T A. S.
Uh Well, things are a little different now they have
limitations on how much they can practice, on what they
can do. But when I was playing, it just it
felt like the whole year, you know, because O t A. S.

(41:22):
They started, they used to start at to begin in
the March. Then you go right into training camp, have
a serious, full padded training camp twice today. Then you
go right into the preseason, and then you go right
into the season. So physically at this time your body
is wearing down. It feels like you've been doing this
a long time. And the one thing I could tell
you with certainty is the things are our our schedule

(41:48):
and the way we practiced our days off, everything is
very monotonous in the NFL, like everything is scheduled. You
do this, you do this if you if you have
a road game, you get up on Saturday, you have
a walk through, you get on the plane. Sunday, you play,
you get back on the plane. Everything is regimented. Everything
is monotonous, the team meeting. So it's just like it's

(42:13):
it seems like it's for ever. Does it get to
the point where every day seems the same that you're
in the building, or that you just know, Okay, this
is a Wednesday, this is a Thursday, this is a Friday.
Because you're doing the same thing every Every Wednesday, the same,
every Thursday, the same every Friday. Now and Saturdays are
different depending on if you travel or not. Sure, it's

(42:33):
just the same. The only day you have different is
on Tuesday, which is there our only day off during
the week. You know, we we talked about Chip Kelly
taking over at U c l A. He was one
of the guys that kind of changed the NFL schedule
for the off days and the practice. I think he
would give guys a Thursday off instead of a Tuesday off,
And I know Bill Belichick, it's kind of messed around

(42:56):
with his practice schedule. But it seems like for so
long everybody just had Tuesday and then you had your
regular Wednesday through Monday. Well you had to have Tuesday
off because your body needed to recover. So a big
thing in NFL locker rooms. And if you've seen clips
or behind the scenes or sounds of of the game,
and you hear guys in the locker room after a
big win saying, all the guys are channing, see you wednesdayday,

(43:21):
see you, and then everybody's quiet, and the coach says,
see you Wednesday. I mean, that is the greatest That's
the greatest thing ever, because if it's not a see
you Wednesday, it's we'll see you here tomorrow morning. Monday,
Monday morning, you have to come in, you get a lift,
and then you watch the film. Whether you want to loss,
you would sit down. You watch the film as a team,

(43:43):
you have a team meeting, then you break up as
offensive defense, and then you break up into your individual meetings.
So that Monday you may get in at about ten
o'clock and you may not leave there until four or
five on a Monday, just watching film and working out
and stuff. And then Tuesdays you're your true day off
and then Wednesday you start all over again. So when guys,

(44:05):
when the coach says see you Wednesday, that means we're
done from Sunday afternoon on Sunday evening until Wednesday morning.
So now guys have two full days off to relax, go,
you know, whatever you want to do. And that's like
a bonus, that's big time bonus. Guys are looking on
their phones for flights anything, seriously, anything, depending on the

(44:26):
region you live, whatever is closest that you can get
to and you know, half hour one and a half
hour flight of to our flight. Yeah, you do it.
Like all of the guys, like both l A teams,
you'd be like, let's go to Vegas. Cool, let's go
to Vegas. You know what I mean, that's you know
our flight. Of course, I'm gonna go to Vegas Sunday night,
hang out there Monday Tuesday night, come back, be ready

(44:50):
to go. Okay, you know what I do find amazing
On a normal week, they needed Tuesday to recover from
from all their heads. But if you I do a
see Wednesday, it's like, let's go to Vegas. Like all
of the bumps and bruises everything. Everything disappears magically at
the Bellagio. That's it's amazing. It's a it's a magical

(45:13):
plays for NFL players. Ah. Yes, well, the magic of
the NFL playoffs will start in less than two weeks,
as Week seventeen comes up this weekend, and then it's
onto the wild card round. The Philadelphia Eagles don't have
to worry about that, and in fact, they don't have
to worry about leaving Philadelphia in the playoffs unless they
get to Super Bowl fifty two. That's because the Eagles

(45:33):
last night secured home field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs
with their nineteen to ten win against the Oakland Raiders.
Another situation where you had a touchdown when time expired
as the Raiders were trying to do laterals. Philadelphia added
to the score, so it wasn't as a big of
a blowout as the nine point win would be. It
was actually a very close game up until the Eagles

(45:54):
were able to kick a field goal at the end.
But the fact is he from when we look at
the NF see now, I know, I know that you
still have belief in what the Eagles can do, and
we have seen a backup quarterback go to a Super
Bowl and Jeff Hostetler and and let the Giants win
it in Super Bowl. I just don't think that the
Eagles defense as a whole is playing as well as

(46:17):
they were in the first half. And I think now
when you take the offense and maybe take them down
a notch or two with foals, I look at the
Eagles and I just think that the Rams are better,
The Vikings are better, the Panthers are better. I think
Philadelphia right now, in my mind of the hierarchy in
the in the NFC is about four or five. Look, okay,
I'll give you. I think the Rams are better, okay,

(46:38):
And I think the Rams are quietly And I say
this on my show every Sunday's. At the beginning of
the season, I was tasked with picking a surprise playoff team,
and given what I saw from Jared Goff in the preseason,
it was enough of a sample size for me to
pick them. I just he just was a different player

(46:59):
to me. And even though it was preseason, I didn't
see any of the bad habits are bad technique that
I saw last year under Jeff Fisher, and so I
picked them and lo and behold, here's a team who's
dominant up front defensively in the front seven. Here's a
team that can run the ball. Todd Gurley has become

(47:19):
the guy we fell in love with a year and
a half two years ago. And here's a quarterback who
was considered by some a bust after the last year,
who's now and one of the top quarterbacks in it
and in the uh NFC that's riddled with backup quarterbacks. Right,
So when you look at the Rams, I'm like, Okay,

(47:41):
I get it. The Rams and they went on the road.
That's seven and one on the road. The Rams win.
They played well on the road. But to say that
the Philadelphia Eagles are done, I just don't see that.
I don't see I don't see a team that has
worked this hard, losing key players up front offensive line,
while the fact that they have a better running Okay,

(48:03):
so we're talking Minnesota, We're talking uh Caroline. Yeah, who
has a better running Who has a better running backs? Right?
Minnesota or they both have? They both have backup quarterbacks.
Who has the better running backs? Just just just answer that. Look,
I don't want to go into all of that. I
just want to know, in your opinion who has the

(48:23):
better running backs. I am going to say, I know
what you want me to say, But Marian H Jack mckinna,
then you haven't been watching the same NFL. You haven't.
But the point that the point that I had and
made this earlier about the Eagles is the Eagles have
so many guys and so finally jagis broken broken through

(48:47):
at least this past weekend where you think he is
going to be the guy. And that's the issue that
I just have with the Eagles of you didn't know
if it was gonna be Corey Clement. You didn't know
if it was gonna be Le Garrett Blunt. You didn't
know if it was good be j g I. You
don't know if all of us and Kenyan Barner was
going to be Internet. When you get into the playoff mode,
if you've got a guy that you just know it's

(49:08):
going to get carries and then there's gonna be another
guy in for a change of pace, it's it's more
it's more fluid, it's it's more familiar. And that was
my issue with the with the Philadelphia Eagles is that
I just think that they had too many guys, but
they have too many good running backs. That's that's the issue.
Means that all good? Okay, So Lagart blunt good. He's

(49:31):
one of the top short yardage backs in the league,
has been since he's been in the league. Is that accurate? Sure? Okay.
So when it's third and one, third and two, you
need those two tough yards, are you gonna hand it
off to him? Of course? All right? So you have
James alright for the second Yeah, for the second argument
said the Philadelphia has got better running backs. Okay. So
now when you're looking at it and you get into
a playoff situation, they both have backup quarterbacks. Okay, of course,

(49:55):
um Minnesota case Kingdom. He's been there the whole pretty
much the whole year. He's running that show. We love
what he's doing. But then you take the running game
because in the playoffs, it's all about ball control. It's
about staying on schedule. And what I mean by that
is first and second down must be productive downs. If
you're gonna hand the ball off to a running back

(50:17):
on first and second down, you have to get three
plus yards, right. That takes pressure off whoever you have
at quarterback. When his third four, third, five, third and two.
Now your playbook opens up. You can do a meritive things,
so you don't have to just sit back there a
third and long and just you know, try to pick
up you know, high volume throws across the middle. All right,

(50:38):
So j JIHI, Right, we know what he is. We've
seen it, we've seen it in Philly. We know what
he can bring to the table. So with that type
of running game, it makes it easier because now defensively,
you have to bring those safeties down, all right. You
can't keep them back in the cover to show where
they're they're they're back, they're deep because they will carve

(51:01):
you up between the tackles. So now once you bring
those safeties down up to stop the run, that opens
up your play action. That opened up your drag rock,
and that opens up down the field. So what I'm
saying is in a playoff environment, when you need to
control the ball and be dominant up front, running the
ball is key, especially for backup quarterback to have success

(51:24):
in the passing game. Now, let's take because you like Philadelphia,
if it's a head to head match up at least
with Minnesota. Okay, let's take that Rams team there. Okay,
so let's put them up against Philadelphia, which you can
see in an NFC championship game, in the game that
would be in Philadelphia. How are the Eagles now better
than the l A Rams who are seemed to be
the hottest team, and they are the hottest team right now,

(51:46):
especially in the NFC. But when you talk about elements,
all right, you take a California team that plays in
great weather and then you take them, you put them
on the road. We don't know what that weather is
gonna be like in Philadelphia, hostile environment. Young team hasn't
been proven, hasn't gone through anything. And I get it.

(52:07):
Once you put them outside and put them in those
type of elements in that environment, Philadelphia has the advantage
in that situation. It's just it is what it is.
That home fill advantage for them in January. We don't
know what that was. It could be stormy, could be snow,
it could be anything. Remember they had to play a

(52:29):
game out of Tuesday in Philadelphia, So you have to
you have to add all of those things into account
when you're talking about bringing a West Coast team, right
It's I'm looking outside. We have this beautiful window here.
I'm looking outside. It's about seventy five degrees right now.
The Rams are outside practicing right now, they're probably inside

(52:53):
practicing and infilling right It's it's completely different. So when
you get into a situation where you dump a team
into the middle of the elements against a good team,
then anything can happen. That's the importance of home fil advantage.
It's it's it's a big plus for Philadelphia because and
I'll also add this, I think it's a really big
plus for the rest of the NFC because I don't

(53:15):
know how many people also wanted to go indoors to Minnesota. Yeah,
like just with with the with the noise that any
indoor place. I think it's tricky for other teams. I
just Philadelphia again. I saw last night and I wanted
and I believed him. I believed in Nick Foles for
for two weeks. But there was something enough to just

(53:35):
have you listen. They were one of the best running
games in the NFL. And if you really want to
take a step back and you say, this is a
team that lost its m VP candidate quarterback, remember they
lost Jason Peters as well. Try to like overcome what
they have overcome and they have you know, they've been
able to navigate it. Yes, but the I still think
that the Carson Wentz injury plays a bit and then

(53:57):
the defense needs to step That's that's all. The Philadelphia
is a top run game in the National Football League
and the top five statistically. Minnesota will get a lot
of yards. They like to run it. Maybe per carry
it's not as good as what Philadelphia does. But I'm
still I'm still more high on the Vikings and Rams.
I get it, and I know it's because of that defense.
That Viking defense is something to fear. I get it.

(54:19):
I understand that He's e from Salam. I'm Dan Buyer.
We are in for Doug Gottlieb here on the Doug
Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. You can always reach
us on Twitter. You can get from At from Salam.
I'm at Dan Buyer on Fox One NFL head coach
is fed up with Week seventeen in the NFL and
he's not gonna take it anymore. We'll tell you who
that is next year on Fox Sports Radio. It's a

(54:41):
Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. He's he from Salam.
I'm Dan buyer and uh, he from has come down
with a case of case of the Jimmy's Doug Gottlieb Show,
and Doug has had the Jimmies for a while. Evram's
got it as well. He goes to me, I, I
just have to talk about Jimmy Garoppolo, Like like, okayy,

(55:01):
so is this is this a this a man crush
that you've got with the forty quarterback or is this
just what? What is it with you and Jimmy Garoppolo?
It's a full blown uh you know, he got me
wide open, man, Jimmy, he got me wide open. I
just look when he say what you want? Okay, say

(55:23):
what you want. He is a big time quarterback. He
looks different than anything that the fort is rolled out.
What is he? What was either fifth quarter fourth fifth quarterback?
Brian Hoyer, C J. Beth and then you had Jimmy

(55:44):
So this would be the third quarterback this season. When
he came in in that Seattle game, right, and his
first pass through a touchdown? Right, he played like three
or four players, right, I was like, Oh, that's different.
It just looked different. Just the eye test. If you

(56:04):
had this the TV down, if you had just walked
into the room and you just saw that play, you'd
be like, oh wow, okay, they got a pretty good quarterback.
It's just his his pocket, present, his demeanor. So as
an offensive lineman, I looked for all of that in
the quarterback. When the quarterback came into the huddle, I
looked into his eyes, and I wanted to see where
he was, all right, because if he's with us, then

(56:27):
we're with him. I've been in the huddle sometimes I
didn't know where the quarterback was. I can I couldn't
find his eyes. He's looking all up at the lights
in the stands. And I've also been in in in
huddles where quarterbacks like, hey, focus in zone in listen
to me, let's go out here, let's do this, let's
do that. And he has that type of presence. So

(56:48):
now thet they're not even the same team. And I
think Carlos Hide said it yesterday. If this were the
beginning of the season, I think we get to the
super Bowl, like he said that, and and what people
are realizing is that speaks volumes because here's a guy

(57:09):
who's been there, who's there last year, is awful at
the beginning of this year terrible, and now he's seen
a change in the entire organization al right, not just
in the games, not just the guys in the locker room,
but from the top down. Everything has changed. So he
makes a statement, if if we could start the season

(57:32):
over right now, I think we can make it to
the super Bowl. That further solidifies the fact that he's
come in and since he's been starting, he's changed the
entire culture in a matter of one month. This is
a team now next year people will be talking about
projected to do such and such and such. Prior to that,

(57:56):
which quarterback are they gonna get? They're gonna get the
kid from cal. I mean the kid from U c
l A. Get from USC Now that's dead in the water.
Her cousins maybe coming over. No need you keep him.
We might even trade up our trade back, right, get
get some pieces, get more picks, or whatever it is.
We know now that we have our franchise quarterback for

(58:17):
the next ten years. It's only been a month, and
I know people are like, oh here, drumming, taking mind.
We saw a sample size of him last last year.
That's why he was one of the hottest topics this
offseason about what New England was gonna do. Who's who
was they were going to trade him? What was gonna happen?
Nothing happened all the way unto the trade deadline. Forty

(58:38):
Niners come out of there, giving up a second round
pick for a franchise quarterback. We know he can play.
We saw him play in New England. Now we see
him play in a completely different system. And that's the
reason why they didn't put him in there too early.
When he got to San Francisco. It's because they wanted
to give him an opportunity to learn the playbook and
have more than a handful of plays to go there

(59:00):
and play with. He's passing for well over three and
fifty yards the game. He has complete control and leadership
of the offense. But oh, by the way, the defense
is playing better now. Why because they're not turning the
ball over. They don't have to defend short fields, they
don't always have to play from behind. Right. So when
you get a piece like Jimmy g you can change

(59:21):
the culture, and it usually takes a little bit. It
happened like that. That means he was ready to go
Monday morning next Monday morning, after they I said it
last week I said, hey, look, Jacksonville and the Rams
might not want to play the forty Niners these last

(59:41):
two weeks. David I said, I to Jacksonville is walking
into a mine field. It is what it is. The
thing about Garoppolo that I think is is interesting is
we had you mentioned the the limited of my of
tape we had on him. It was the Cardinals game

(01:00:02):
to start out last year, and then Week two and
he ends up getting knocked out for the New England Patriots.
So that's all that we saw. But there were so
many things that we wanted to throw up red flags.
We didn't want him to be Kevin Cobb, remember the
Eagles quarterback, and you know, and you're like, Okay, now
he's gonna be a starter, and he just doesn't live
up to the to the expectations. You didn't know about
San Francisco because you heard Kyle Shanahan's playbook is so

(01:00:25):
extreme that they didn't know on how much Jimmy Garoppolo
would be able to take in coming in mid season.
You talked about the the forty Niners in the culture.
They would play hard, but they couldn't win like they
were in games they played the Rams in a shootout
earlier this season. There are a lot of games where
they were competitive, they just couldn't get over the hump.

(01:00:48):
And now you're sitting there and you're looking at a
team that could maybe go to and fourteen and get
a high pick, and then you start Jimmy Garoppolo. All
of that stuff seemed to be against it and it's
just amazing to me to see he gets knocked it
put in because of C. J. Bethard getting knocked out
in that Seattle game. And now the whole franchise has
turned as you explained it, and it's such a even

(01:01:10):
the history of New England Patriots going elsewhere, Matt Castle
was the only one who seemed to have real success
in the one playoff season he led the Chiefs to
the post postseason. I mean that outside of that, the
backup Patriots quarterback, there was nothing there. There was so
there was so much against Garoppolo. And to see how
he has turned it and how quickly he has turned
that franchise is nothing short of remarking. And and Jimmy

(01:01:31):
g was different, Right, That's the reason why Belichick didn't
want to let him go, right, he didn't want to
let him go because he knew right he wasn't sold
on Tom Brady playing five more years. Tom Kraft, I
mean Craft was the owner was he's all in on Brady.

(01:01:53):
As long as Brady wants to play, he will have
a place to play. Belichick was like, yo, look, I
mean he's forty. We give him this year. We have
the guy, his successor ready to go. He was like, no,
we're sticking with Tom. So they had to let Jimmy
g go. He goes to San Francisco. Monday morning after
they beat the Rams their last game. I called him

(01:02:16):
into the office and I said, hey, look, people are
saying to the franchise, tag and give him another year.
See what he has. I've seen enough. I've seen enough.
The guys in the locker room have seen enough. Their
whole demeanor, their whole tone has changed. They're excited to
play this last game. I mean they're ready to go.
They're ready go. Let's go play this last game. Let's

(01:02:38):
continue with what we have. Let's show the people what
we're bringing to the table now. So I'm saying, hey,
we're gonna give you a five year deal, fifth year
player option, seven million, sixty one up front sixty one guaranteed.
If you're Jimmy Garoppolo, do you leave that? Do you

(01:03:00):
leave the office without signing that? No? No, you take it. Yeah, yeah,
it's done. Now we can move on. Now we can
move on. We don't have to worry about anything else.
We can move on. You know what, and and truly
and how today's NFL goes. The sooner he gets his
long term deal, it not only does it benefit him
in the short term and long term because there could

(01:03:22):
be another deal on the back end of that that
after that deal, think about this, he's gonna be the
starting quarterback for ten years. Yeah yeah, so there there
would be two quarterbacks. So the sooner you sign this one,
the better it off it is for him to get
the next one. And it's also great for every other
quarterback in the NFL to say, Okay, they just gave
this guy. In a six game sample, this quarterback, uh,

(01:03:43):
Aaron Rodgers and everybody else would be You don't make
him the highest paid quarterback, but you don't short change him. Right.
You give bruck Oswald eight six million dollar seven million
dollars two years ago, Come on close. I think he
knows his value though. You're gonna have to pay near
top dollar because if Matthew Stafford and I understand, but

(01:04:05):
a guy who hasn't made any money, if you give
him a hundred and twenty one million, four million dollars
was sixty one guarantee. How do you are as an
as as an agent? How do you tell your client?
Are you we can get more what you take that
you build out something. You have the fifth year player option,

(01:04:29):
right whether you take it or leave it, you hit
the open market and then you get your two hundred million.
That's just how it goes. The love affair of Jimmy Garoppolo.
I wanted to talk about an NFL head coach. We're
gonna get to that later who hates Week seventeen. But
for as much as that coach hates Week seventeen, he
from loves Jimmy Garoppolo that that topic just as much

(01:04:51):
as we love David Gascon, who's here to tell us
the latest of what's happening in the heart of Dallas
Bowl and what else is going on in the world
of sports today. I kind of going to bring a
candle in there and like dim the lights, because that
is that some love right there for Jimmy g man,
it seriously four and oh maybe five and oh after
week seven put in some banaca. Before the segment, he

(01:05:14):
was ready to go. I'm in here doing my eyebrows.
Oh that's good stuff. All right, we'll go to college
football real quick. With UTEL and West Virginia first and
goal from the two. They stright to two straight for
the formation to the left Huntley with Moss. They'll give it,
Tyler keeps it and he'll get into the end zone
on the right side this time for a touchdown. Touchdown

(01:05:34):
Tyler Huntley. Yeah, someone's got money on this game. I guess, dude,
calm man. Right now, as it stands, twenty seven to
six utes are in control of this ball game. There's
about eight oh seven left in the affair. And then
later on tonight you're gonna get U c l A
and Kansas State in the Cactus Bowl. Bruce Feldman had
twittered out just a few minutes ago that Josh frozen.
He's actually gonna go through pregame warmups, but he was

(01:05:56):
told he's nine a no go in this game for
medical and so he will not play at all for
U c l A. And maybe his college career is
over and done them with earlier. We're gonna get quake
the quick lane ball, Duke in Northern Illinois kickoff time,
There is that the quick lane? What bowl? Is that
a quick lane ball? What is the quick lane? Is

(01:06:17):
that like an oil change? It's gotta be right. I
didn't know what Zack Spies was until you told me
it was Chicken? Was chicken? I just had I was
just in Atlanta last weekend. Uh took my nephew. He
wanted some Zack's best. Good Ah, he says, it is.
It's just like you know, It's just like any other
fast food chicken players. I guess Chick fil A, the Bees.

(01:06:40):
Chick fil A is ahead above it. Did you say
bees knees? The bee's knees. I'm telling you chick Hello, goodness,
gracie guys, real quick. At the NFL Cardinals, said coach
Bruce Arian says he's not stepping end after the season expires,

(01:07:01):
and Tennessee said coach Mike Mularkey did not rule out
running back to Marco Murray for weeks seventier. I've got
a Chick fil A story to tell you, guys. This
is delicious, Okay. Now, I used to travel for uh
Fox on college football weekends, and I would end up
going to the South and i'd fly into Atlanta. And
if I had there was a game at Georgia or

(01:07:23):
even a game at Auburn, I just drive a couple
of hours, just easier flight instead of taking you know,
these smaller planes to get there. I would just fly
to Atlanta. But every time I would go to Atlanta,
I would go to the Dwarf House. And the Dwarf
House is actually where the Chick fil A sandwich was
first made. It was at a restaurant. It's the official
like that's where the official Chick fil A sandwich started,

(01:07:46):
and then they ended up making it and ended up
being like in a mall, and that's where Chick fil
A started. But the actual sandwich and how the breading
was made was this place, a place called the Dwarf
House in Atlanta. I would land in Atlanta and I'd
get my rental car and I would automatically GPS straight.
I wouldn't even go to the hotel. And when me
and my fiance and now wife went to UH Atlanta

(01:08:08):
a couple of years ago, the same thing. I said,
I know, we're going to check into our hotel, we
have to go, and so we would take the drive.
It's not too far from the airport. And but that
would be anytime I go to Atlanta, and you've got
to go to this one, because you could go to
all of the other ones across the country, but this one,
like there's so much breading and it's so it's so

(01:08:30):
good on the chicken sand. Some sometimes they may, you know,
give you a little less than you want. Oh it's
the best. Tell you what, man for my money? Please please,
I'm telling you. I just told you. Last week I
was in Atlanta, and I think three of the four
nights I had me some Chick fil a. Is that good?

(01:08:52):
It's just it's just they have a sit down portion
of the restaurant as well, so you can dine in.
It's not like a not like it's not it's like
an actual restaurant. You sit down and they'll come up
to you and say, like, would you like to eat
better fast food experience any other sauce. I'm not a
big I'm not a big sauce. I'm not I love
I live and die by the chicken flace. So good,

(01:09:14):
My god, dude, that is amazing. That sauce licking his microphone. Okay,
that's Dan, you got to try to save. I am
a big honey guy. I always take it. Yeah, yeah,
good Dan. How about this a perfect night? You set

(01:09:35):
this up, you have from you have Jimmy G and
you make reservations. Sound candle it. This is amazing. Seriously,
go to that when you're in the land to go
to the dwarf face that you can get the chicken.
Someone get Jimmy G on the phone. Let's set this
up too for Salam. So Jimmy, I've been watching you

(01:09:59):
play and that just sorry. I'm a little embarrassed, nervous
right now, palms are sweaty oh mag deficit. Hey, today's
Doug gott Leave show. That's what this is. By the way,
on Fox Sports Radio. Easy from Salam I'm Dan Fires

confident car buying experience. It's it is. It is the
bee's knees. I gotta pay off. This week seventeen issue
because there is one NFL head coach who can't stand it,
but I think he actually has a very good reason,
and he is Ravens head coach John Harball. The Ravens

(01:10:42):
are in the thick of things in the National Football
League in the a f C wild card race. If
they can get a win against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday,
they'll be in the postseason. However, the Ravens kickoff now
has been moved from a one o'clock Eastern time game
to a four Eastern time start because the NFL is
trying to match up the games that have playoff implications

(01:11:06):
to be played at the same time. So, because the
Raiders and Chargers are playing on the West Coast, all
of the a f C teams still in the thick
of it that includes Jaguars and Titans in the Bills
and Dolphins are playing later in the day. It's on
New Year's Eve, and that does not make John Harbaugh
very happy. I don't know what the considerations are at
the league office and why they do what they do,

(01:11:26):
and I really don't care other than the fact I
hope our fans are are okay with it. You hope
they're into it. Hope. I hope people get there. You know,
the people have plans. I hope they give their ticks
as somebody else so they get there and want the
place to be packed, you know, I want the place
to be packed and loud. The concern is that people
just aren't gonna go because of New Year's Eve, and
in this the Ravens also have reportedly had issues of

(01:11:48):
of attendance this season. So John Harbaugh is saying, you
have now NFL have taken away our home field advantage
by moving this kickoff for three hours. Legitimate. I I
think that there's some validity to it is, especially if
you've had trouble you know, this season with at Tendons.
But this is an important game and as we know,

(01:12:13):
no matter you know what the circumstances, NFL fans or
NFL fans, it will show up. It will show you out.
Uh So I don't I don't think it's a I
just think he was upset because you prepare, you know,
it messes up your preparation, right, you throw it off
real soon like you you have. Like I said, everything

(01:12:34):
is said, this is what we do and when something comes.
I've been I've been a part of that where they've
changed our game closer to the game than they did now,
so at least you have a full week to prepare
for that. I mean, they've changed our game in a
couple of days like Friday, they were like, hey, you
guys playing the late game now like it it happens.
Throws you off a little bit, but I think, um,

(01:12:57):
I think the fans will be there. I think this
was kind of a rallying cry for the fans. He
was speaking to the fans instead of directly saying, hey, fans,
show up, and he wanted to make it, you know,
an issue that he was having with the NFL and
the way they were doing things. But I think it
was mainly for the fans, like, hey, look, stay with us.

(01:13:19):
This is important to stay with the show up and
show out. We need that home fill advantage. The New
Year's Eve conundrum, if you want to say, really popped
up a couple of years ago with the college football
playoffs in the second year when they put those games
on New Year's Eve. I was one of the idiots
that thought, oh wow, people want to get together and
and watch the football game before going out, And I

(01:13:39):
was completely off base. And that's and and that's what
I think that John Harbaugh is fearing, is that our
fans gonna say to themselves, you know what, even though
the games at which isn't a huge deal, it's the
issue of it being seven and then leaving the stadium
at eight o'clock and then what do you do if
you're at the stadium all day? Do you want to
go out to a New Year's you know sort of thing.

(01:14:00):
I I think it's I don't think I I feel
that it's a legitimate argument for John Harbaugh. It's just
what are you gonna do. You're gonna play Raiders Chargers
at ten a m and l A. Well, that's not fair,
you know for the l A. And I know I
know the NFL is trying to do as much as
they can to make appealing football. The Ravens are just
the ones who are gonna have to pay for it.

(01:14:21):
It's just it's tough. It is. Win the game, don't
worry about the rest of the stuff everything else. The
silver lining is it's the Bengals coming to town. You've
got at least got that. He'sy from Salam. I'm Dan Buyer.
This is the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio.
You can always reach us on Twitter. Get from at
E from Salam. I am at Dan Buyer on Fox Now.
Lebron James has been the NBA's ferrari for a long time. Okay,

(01:14:45):
but the NBA could be in the market for a
brand new ride. We'll tell you what we're talking about
next year on Fox Sports Radio. Doug gottlib Show on
Fox Sports Radio. He'sy from Salam. I'm Dan Buyer on
There's Day after Christmas. I have to say I think
I am in the minority when it comes to the
NBA Finals. I saw Calves Warriors on the screen yesterday

(01:15:07):
and I just don't want to see it again. I've
seen it enough. It's a perfect trilogy. It's I made
the point yesterday that I've just seen enough. And as
we see replays the new blood that you've got in
the NBA, really in the Western Conference, of whether it
be the Rockets or Oklahoma City, even the Spurs, you know,
for for that in fact, I think would be interesting

(01:15:30):
to go up against Lebron. Now. I do believe that
in all likelihood the Warriors still will be there, and
it's maybe up to the Calves end of the deal
to make it that way or to make it that
far to the NBA Finals. But from I'm a little
over it. I'm a little over Calves Warriors. Why because
I think it every day because it was settled last year. Yeah,

(01:15:52):
but team they got better, Both teams got better. So
who else would you rather see? I would like to see?
Exactly said everything I said. Who else would you like?
Do you say it? Well? I just said, I just said, Okay, listen, listen, listen,
this is what's gonna happen. This is the truth. Okay,

(01:16:13):
even when I've worked together, I just told you three
teams i'd like to see in the finals. He was
tweeting about Jimmy garoppoloy and it's an absolute true story.
He was tweeting about Jimmy Garoppolo said, I'd like to
see the rockets or the thunder. You don't want to
see the or you don't want to see the rockets.
I can promise you don't want to see the rockets.
And I was tweeting Jimmy at Jimmy G underscore teon

(01:16:38):
on Twitter forty seconds ago, that's right, at Jimmy G.
And then the winky smile. I didn't want to. I
didn't want to out him with the funny Listen, listen
to what I'm saying. In two years, we'll revisit this
conversation when Jimmy g is the mv B of the

(01:16:58):
NFL and he's gonna be like, no, I'm sold as well.
I think he's them was in early. I think we
should spend some time this offseason together. I think I
should go out and do expose them. Comes back to
the NFL to play for Niners. You're gonna see I
give you one game, maybe no easy from salam. I'm

(01:17:25):
Dan Buyer or in for Doug Gottlieb on the Doug
Gottlieb Show, and at this time during the Doug Gottlieb Show,
we like to hear what's maybe happening on other Fox entities,
whether it be Fox Sports Radio, other shows, or even
Fox Sports One or Fox It's a little game we
like to play. And now, yes, what does the Fox say?

(01:17:46):
And Doug isn't in today because he was in earlier
on the Herd for Colin Coward. You heard it here
on Fox Sports Radio and on Fox Sports One. Doug
on Lebron James in the future of the NBA. Kevin
Durant shut down Lebron j James. Kevin Durant was better
in the fourth quarter than Lebron James. Kevin Durant was
better in the fourth quarter and shut down Lebron James

(01:18:07):
in the fourth quarter of NBA Finals games. We've had
six games in a row of this iconic matchup with
two of the absolute best to play the game. And
isn't it fair to at least question whether or not
Kevin Durant's better might leave the NBA blocks So the
whole idea that he doesn't play defense. Okay, if you
saw in the fourth quarter when Andrea Goodala wanted to
switch onto Lebron James like Nana, no I got him.

(01:18:29):
And though he's never going to be nor has he
ever been, the pastor of Lebron James, he's willing to
pass the ball, he's not taking terrible shots, and he's
better in the fourth quarter when being guarded by and
guarding Lebron James. What more evidence do you need that,
at least at this point in time, though Lebron is
still in great shape, and as the guys from underspputed
point out, it's he never been heard, never been heard.

(01:18:51):
He continues to play at an incredibly efficient clip. Kevin
Durant the better player. Why can't we admit that sometimes
there is a newer model that improves on the old model.
That was Doug Gottlieb on the Herd earlier today on
Kevin Durant overtaking Lebron is the best player in the NBA.
And Kevin Durant has even said, basketball wise or basketball

(01:19:13):
on the floor, he feels he's just as effective as
Lebron James is, or in ranking as the better player.
And you're sitting here nodding your head to what Doug
was saying. I said that last year in the finals.
I said, like I said earlier in the show, it's
one true, unnguardable force in the NBA. And ask Kevin
Durant his offensive skill set is he's seven ft tall.

(01:19:37):
He's seven ft tall, he can handle the ball like
a guard, he can shoot from anywhere, and he does
play defense. And and that's and that's what is, that's
what's now you see something that is completely tangible of
him using that size. Because Durant up until I would
I would even say this year he was not a

(01:19:59):
quote unquote rim protector or a shot blocker that if
you wanted to say, a complete all around player. Durant's
defense was always brought up as a negative, and now
he's turned that to make it. But what I found
is interesting is when we have these conversations, we we
even three or four different players always around Lebron. We
we've in Kevin Durant, we put in James Hardener, make

(01:20:19):
him a US Brook. You put in uh, you know,
Janice and Tenna Kimpole for for how he came. We
take guys, we move him in. But the constant is, yeah,
the one constant is Lebron James. Yeah, and Lebron James
has been the face of the NFL and the best
player in the NFL up until now. Like last last
year's final, I mean in in the NBA last year's final.

(01:20:42):
He said it all with the step that look. Kevin
Durant went to an all star seventy two, seventy three
win team and made the two time m v P
the second best player on that team. Think about that,
he made him the second best player on the team period.
A mediate at lee who did a better job in
their new surroundings though, Lebron in Miami or or Kevin

(01:21:05):
Durant with Golden State, Well would have to be Lebron
in Miami because they had less to work. And I
think that's what we all want, Like that's you know,
like that's that's what's so tough with that argument. Lebron team,
Jimmy g Ah welcome man on this day after Christmas.
The gift that keeps on giving. E From's love affair
of Jimmy Garoppolo and now Kevin Durant we can put

(01:21:28):
in that mix as well. It's interesting as we talk
about Kevin Durant what the Warriors did yesterday against the
Cleveland Cavaliers, and he From and I kept the conversation
going for the last couple of minutes. Durant's status in
the NBA has me to think. And I was one
of severely critical of Durant's decision of what his legacy

(01:21:50):
would be on how we would view him. But now
as we see things how they play out over the
last eighteen months since he made the decision to join
the Golden State Warriors, it's starting there. There are things
along the way from that we didn't envision happening we
didn't envision seeing and that, whether that be injuries or
just the way that Kevin Durant would fit in with

(01:22:12):
the Golden State Warriors. But right now, it seems that
my gues estimation and my prediction that Kevin Durant would
never live up to best player in the NBA status
because he chose to take the easy way out to
Golden State is completely off base. Because he's rising, almost
like Lebron did with the Miami Heat when he saw
he was clearly the best player of that big three.

(01:22:34):
And now when you see what he means to the
Golden State Warriors and now he's taken over, has changed
his game over the last eighteen months, Kevin Durant is
is on that way of being the top player in
the end. I think so. And I think I think
if it stood just right now, with Steph Curry being hurt,
God forbid, he didn't come back at all this season,
I think Golden State can still win the championship. Now,

(01:22:56):
if you flip that and you take Kevin Durant offut
Steph back in, I don't think they can win the championship.
We saw and it's a testament to how good, how
much better Kevin Durant makes a team. We saw Kevin
Durant yesterday with the whether it be a fouler or
not a foul on Lebron James, which I thought it

(01:23:18):
was a foul and I thought it should have been
Cavs ball. But the point being, as and we heard
Doug say as we were in for Doug Gottlieb was
feeling in on the herd that Kevin Durant was the
best player on the floor yesterday offensively and defensively. And
it's the defensive aspect that has also added to Durant's game.
And we even see it in certain instances when you

(01:23:38):
look at the Warriors and you see if Steph Curry
and Kevin Durant ur out, Clay Thompson trying to step up,
not the same Clay and some struggles during that time.
You mentioned what happens if you take Durant out and
you put Steph Curry in. Are the Warriors back to
to that level? Well, they didn't win an NBA finals
the last time you remember that. They we know about
the three one. They all actively pursued him, and I

(01:24:02):
think he at the time, I thought, you know, I was,
you know, not sold on the move, uh, but I
get it from his standpoint now seeing what he was
able to accomplish last year and seeing uh, how he's
elevated his game. Just look at it like this, And
I'm doing strict comparisons between Steph who's a great player

(01:24:23):
m v P, and Kevin and and k D Kevin Durant,
who's an m v P. In that fourth quarter, If
you replace Kevin Durant with Steph Curry, you don't get
that type of defense on Lebron James, that's the bottom line.
And you don't get that type of scoring output. So
you got a guy playing both sides of the court.

(01:24:44):
And I am a big proponent for players doing that.
I grew up in the NBA where you know Kobe's
and and and and Jordan's and those guys were not
only all NBA All Stars, but they were all defensive.
Like from me, in order to be the m v P,
you gotta play both sides at least a little bit.
That's why James Harden will never be an m VP

(01:25:07):
candidate in my mind, I don't care how much he
scores if you're not playing any defense. I mean, whether
you are physically able to stop someone is one thing,
But I'm talking about effort, yes, and and it's interesting
because I look at the players that we would take
in and out, and that's been my issue is Lebron

(01:25:29):
has always been the constant. And we've wanted to bring up, Okay,
who's the number one contender, who's the number two contender,
and who's the number three contender. You know, when I'm
bringing up the names of a Westbrook and a Hardened
and a Janice and and Anthony Davis or a Kyrie Irving,
and you bring up Kawhi Leonard and Kawhi Leonards, defense
always was there, you know, like like that was always
there to see his evolution as an offensive player is

(01:25:53):
is is not the norm And so when you bring up,
when we bring up all of these names, defense has
to be. It must be a part of it. And
now that Kevin Durant is using his size to his
advantage and using that length because realistically, seven footer is
not going to keep up with a guy out from

(01:26:13):
the basket, and now that he's able to as a
rim protector changed things. You put a guy seven feet
guy in a guard's body and has a wingspan is
in foot speed to stay in front of somebody. But
not only that, if the person gets the step, he
has the ability to recover and block a shot after
he's already been blown by. I mean, that's tremendous. Yeah,

(01:26:37):
and their size as well with Golden State another of
Zaza Petulia and Jamail McGee. But when they go small,
remember Draymond was always the one to play that five spot.
Now Kevin Durant defensively at least can be at that
point on the floor for good and and not only
an on ball defender, he's also of a very very
good secondary defender where he's helps side blocking shots. That's

(01:27:00):
I think that's where he does a lot of his
damage is helping off someone and someone goes up to
the rim and he's able to come off and block
that shot once the offensive player commits to to the shot.
All of that goes without saying, like usually biggs are
doing that right. Usually someone at the center position is

(01:27:22):
a great help side defender because they have to be
a rim protector. So now you're taking your best offensive
threat and you're making him one of your best rim protectors.
You know, on that team, Draymond Green is the best
defender that they have. That's just his job, that's what
he does. He takes pride in it. And you also
have Andre Iguodala. And I think because you have guys

(01:27:44):
like Clay Thompson, because you have guys who not only
give you as much efforts as they can offensively, you
have these a group of guys who come in and
they play defense. That's what makes this team so dynamic
and so tough to beat. And oh, by the way,
you have a tremendous closer, and Steph or Kevin Durant, like,

(01:28:08):
how what do you do with that? What do you do?
If you're hearing opponent? There is not They've got five
guys who can guard all five positions on any team
defensively without scoring a point. The only thing that I
that I think can stand in Golden State's way is
the taxing of these last three post seasons. If they

(01:28:28):
go through another one, at some point you have now
played a season more of basketball than anybody else has.
And and that's and and so at some point they
are they are. But as as you look at over
the length, you just never know when maybe it's it's
it's going to be off remember they were they were
a game away from losing the Western Conference finals when

(01:28:51):
Durant was at Oklahoma City. So things can change just
a little bit. Things are changing in the Western Conference
top to bottom. Earlier on the program, Eric Paink, yes so,
the lead Lakers writer for the Bleacher Report and also
NBA TV and doing some stuff for Basketball Inside, has
joined us and we talked about the Lakers in their
performance last night against the timber Wolves without Alonzo Ball
and without Brandon Ingram and as you mentioned, no Brook

(01:29:14):
Lopez is gonna he was still out for a while.
But the fact of the matter is Kyle Kuzma stepped
up once again, even though in a losing effort. Eric
Pinkus earlier on the show, this is a team of
of young guys trying to figure their way out. I
think Kyle Kuzman has been revelation. He's been exactly what
this team needed, just somebody who unexpectedly was way better

(01:29:35):
than everyone thought. And they got that. And that's to
get that with the seventh pick, a guy who probably
should be a top five pick is fantastic, and I
think Alonso is going to grow into who he is.
Kuzman is a couple of years older. Ingram still really young.
He's basically the same age as Alonso. So when these
guys come of age, I think there's a lot to
be optimistic about. I do think the team needs more

(01:29:57):
veteran leadership from you know, star type years. That was
Eric Pinkus earlier today. And when you talk about that leadership,
it goes hand in hand as I look at free
agency because it's gonna be such a big deal in
and the talk of Lebron coming to the Lakers, but
I think Lebron trying to decide to go back to Cleveland.
The fact of the matter, Kyrie Irving was there, so

(01:30:19):
there was already a built in piece of a star player.
When we talked about Lebron's transition to the Lakers, we said, oh, hey,
Alonzo ball is going to be there. There's there's going
to be a player that will want to get him
the ball, and Lebron's responsibility of controlling the basketball or
handling the basketball won't be as much because of Alonzo.
What is completely unexpected is that Kyle Kuzma now is

(01:30:40):
a legitimate, legitimate peace to go along with any free
agent that would want to go to the Lakers and
having him in the fold puts them maybe on a
faster track to success if that veteran leadership or that
veteran player star can come to l A. And he's
the guy when you look at and you say, okay,
I can play with him, right because he's I look
at him and he's like a and more athletic Clay Thompson. Right. Well,

(01:31:05):
he'll take the ball, you know, to the rim and
he has that crazy running hook shot. Didn't I mean nobody,
that's one of his shots. It's a running hook shot.
It's the closest thing to a sky Hookson's career. It's unbelievable.
But not only that, the confidence this kid, being a

(01:31:25):
late round draft pick has come in with. Nobody was
talking once we saw him play in the summer, We're like, Wow,
who's this kid? This kid was just pretty good. That's
where the buds started, right. And then to make that
because he was playing against guys who I don't know,
maybe overseas right now are selling car insurance or maybe
working at Geico or something like that. But you know,

(01:31:46):
because only two guys out of all of those guys
on each team would have made the roster period. So
you're playing against the guy guys who exactly So now
you're seeing him lead his team in scoring. You're seeing
him be dynamic in terms of his basketball i Q

(01:32:07):
the understanding of the game. He can get out, he
can run, he defends. So now as a veteran player
of MAX, a guy Lebron James and Paul George, you're
looking like, okay, all right, these are pieces and not
to mention, Alonzo ball like he will end up being
a good to great point guard. His knack for passing

(01:32:28):
is unparallel like only other young guard in the league
who who uh is similar is Ben Simmons and and
and Philly. So you see these pieces, k CP Cartavious
car Wo Pop and then you got Julius Randall. They
the Lakers have seven guys averaging double digits. That's seven

(01:32:50):
young players averaging double digits. With Brook Lopez thrown in there.
That's a great nucleus for one or two MAX players
to come in and and and kind of settle and
right the ship. But isn't it realistically three guys that
he looks he doesn't like. If you're Lebron James, I'll
just use Lebron because it's the name. We're connecting the most.

(01:33:11):
It's just it's it's two or three guys, because not everybody.
You're gonna need guys to fill in certain roles, but
you're also gonna want If Lebron James comes to l A,
it's going to be built around Lebron and then everything
is built there. Lebron is not gonna want to go
somewhere and fit into one. It'll it'll be Lebron and

(01:33:33):
you have Kyle Kuzma, you have a Lonzo Ball, and
don't forget Brandon England. Good lord. This year, the jump
from last year to this year for this young man. Remember,
he wasn't aggressive offensively, he just wasn't aggressive. He beat
times out there. You didn't even know he was on
the on the court. That's not the case this year.

(01:33:54):
He's very aggressive. He has that way of getting to
the rim. He's I mean, he's like a George Gervin,
that thing roll like he will finger roll you to death. Alright,
he's attacking the rim. He'll take it off to he'll
take it hard to the rim. He's a different player
than he was last year. So if I'm a guy
like Lebron James or Paul George or something like that.

(01:34:14):
I'm looking at these kids and the growth that they've taken,
the step that they've taken uh from year one year
two in terms of Ingram Uh. And then I'm looking
at Kyle Kuzm Alonzo Ball and I'm like, Yo, I
can work with that. You just said something that's interesting
because they're The talk of Paul George to the Lakers
has been so much. So now you're gonna bring in
Lebron plays the three at three four. You've got Kyle

(01:34:38):
Kuzma plays three four, You've got Brandon Ingram that plays
three four, and now Paul George plays three four, so
you're gonna have I I'm I'm just saying when you're
looking at the construction of a team, and I know
that one one through five, and I'm not talking about order.
I'm talking about positions on the core changes When we

(01:35:01):
see Draymond Green playing the five and we see Lebron
playing the one. At times, I'm just wondering if the
Lakers now have a log jam at that spot. I
get it. And and and now, if you're looking at
to truly succeed, is it really going to be Lebron
James and Paul George to the Lakers with Kyle Kuzma
and Brandon Ingram. And I think Kuzma, by the way,

(01:35:23):
his emergence is different than what we saw with Jordan
Clarkson a start, a good player on a bad team
who would rack up a lot of numbers. I think
there's a lot of validity to that that Kuzma can
continue what he's doing. But because of the success of
those pieces, now I'm wondering if the plans that we
all thought of a Paul George reunion with the Lakers
and Lebron James joining him now with what the Lakers have,

(01:35:43):
I don't know if Paul George is as necessary as
people thought he once was. And you're you're right. I
would prefer them go out and get a knocked down
shooter someone because we don't have one. And I think
we get a knock down shooter, a nice to guard
that can really really spread the floor. That's what you want,
that's what you need. He's he from Salam. I'm Dan Buyer.

(01:36:06):
This is the Doug Gottlip Show on Fox Sports Radio.
You can always reach us on Twitter. I'm at Dan
Buyer on Fox and you could get from at e
Fram Salam. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones knows who his
head coach is going to be next year. We'll give
you that answer next year on Fox Sports Radio Doug
Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. He's Avram Salam. I'm
Dan Buyer, glad to have you with us on this

(01:36:27):
day after Why am I yelling over this guy? What's
going on? Bobo? You know like Abraham's bobbing. We're trying
to hit. We're trying to hit you to comfortable. I
can't hear myself. I am trying to talk. I got
this other guy yelling at me. I can't take it.

(01:36:50):
Man Smith is a new single icon? Okay icon't I
can't hear myself thinking? How about that? This track is
the Bee's Knees Very good Radio today, rod By the
Bes Knees and auto Zone getting your zone with great

(01:37:12):
value offers and free services that help your vehicle deliver
it's best performance. Auto Zone is everything to get you
what you need get in the zone. Auto Zone and
when it comes down to it, it was I from
who said Bee's Knees Today, Taking back to about the
nineteen thirties a man when it's good, and it is good,
it is good. Things aren't good with the Dallas Cowboys.
The Cowboys eliminated from postseason contention with their loss to

(01:37:36):
the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, and it was a game
that the Cowboys really dominated. If you when you watch
the game, the Seahawks were actually outgained by their own
penalty yards in that contest. Nevertheless, Seattle gets the victory.
The Seahawks are still alive. With the Cowboys after a
year last year where they were the top seed in
the NFC, you went thirteen and three, but then where

(01:37:57):
else tood by the Packers now won't eve and get
to the playoffs. And then the question started to pop up. Okay,
what about the future of Jason Garrett. Cowboys owner Jerry
Jones earlier today on one oh five three in Dallas
commented on Garrett's future. Just so we're clear about it.
I I do understand frustration right after you lose a

(01:38:20):
game that has as much meaningful loss as this ball game.
But I get to look at a lot of different
things that UH and have been around a lot of
head coaches and UH coordinators and so I feel good
about our head coach feeling good about his head coaches
saying that Jason Garrett is the guy that the Cowboys

(01:38:40):
need right now. Haven't we been down this role before?
It seems like every couple of years this this this
topic comes up. Um the the fact that the matter is,
I don't think Jerry Jones is going to make a
decision unless you get a full year at full strength.

(01:39:00):
So this came up when Tony Romo went down and
they were awful. This came up when you know it's
it's they didn't get they They didn't have Zeke for
six games. So you can't get a full sample size
of a coach. Now, Jason Garrett has been up and
down coach. If that good year, that bad years. So

(01:39:20):
I think if they have a year like they had
this year, next year everyone's playing, they don't make any
steps forward, then that's when this conversation becomes a reality.
But until then, because Jason Garrett goes in and say, hey,
look everything changed. This whole thing was Zeke the whole year,

(01:39:41):
even in the offseason. It's hard to coach like that
when you don't know when a guy is gonna play.
When he's not gonna play. It just didn't work out
in our favor. Uh So let's give it a run.
Let's get all our let's get up to full strength,
and and and let's see what happens and how it
plays out ex year, which I think is the course

(01:40:02):
that you know Jerry Jones is going to take. I
don't see who else, who else will be out there
in the market to be the Dallas cow The name
that was was thrown about for years that never came
to fruition because of the success that he was having
with his current team was Sean Payton. Sean Payton, I
believe had a place in Dallas as well, but the

(01:40:24):
going was so good with the Saints that there was
no reason to leave, especially when he had drew. You
don't walk away from bre to Tony Romo. Just don't
do that. And when you look at the Dallas Cowboys
as a whole, the bottom needs to fall out really
for Jerry to make a change. And and this isn't
even close. And as you mentioned, the circumstances that they

(01:40:46):
went up against this year. I just looked up the
number of head coaches the Dallas Cowboys have had in
the history of their franchise. And we know how long
that Tom Landry was there, but it's only been eight
Jason Garrett has been there since. So when you're talking
out sticking with the guy and sticking with the plan,
Jerry Jones has done that. I do think it would
be unfair for the Cowboys to remove Garrett based on

(01:41:08):
the fact that Ezekiel Elliott's situation was such a cloud
over this team this year. However, it is now on
Jason Garrett's responsibility to figure out what they can actually
get out of Dak Prescott and figure out what type
of quarterback he's going to be, because now we are
two years in and while we thought he was the
greatest thing since sliced Bread last year, now there's so

(01:41:29):
many more questions that I put him in the middle
of that which way does that go? So you've got
an issue to make, whether it be with Scott Linehan,
who's the one who calls the place, or somebody to
at least develop Dak Prescott because the pass catchers on
Dallas just aren't as effective as they are anymore. Whether
it be their problem or the quarterbacks problem that needs

(01:41:50):
to be fixed in big days, well, I think they
do need to go get some guys outside who can
actually run rouse, get separation. Des Brian is dez Bryant.
He's a ball guy. But you can't always throw that
up there because if they roll a safety over the top,
now it's not a guy. You know, it's three thirty three,
you know, so you gotta have somebody who can actually

(01:42:11):
run routes, get open, Uh, be decisive. So they need
to address that issue and bringing some guys on the
outside that can actually do that. Um, who can stretch
the field, take some of that pressure off Dak Prescott
and you know, the running game is gonna be the
running game. It's gonna be there. Zeke's there, the offensive

(01:42:32):
lines there. Uh. Defensively, you know, they had like DeMarcus
Lawrence as a defensive and he showed up out of
nowhere this year. I mean, he's a formidable They got
I got a couple of pieces on defense. But like
you said, you don't want to be like, oh, he's
gotta go and bringing a new system, new coaches like

(01:42:52):
you don't want you want to build and and cultivate
what you have because they have a good nucleus. You know,
they know they have the quarterback. It's gonna be there
for the next ten years, but can you developer? Can
you put him in positions where he's successful. They could
be the Philadelphia Eagles for the simple fact of you're
gonna rely on running the ball, and we talked about
running the ball earlier. But the Cowboys just have better

(01:43:13):
personnel with Ezekiel Elliott being that running back because he's
different than most backs in the league. Interesting to see
what the Cowboys doing the off season. It is not
going to have anything to do with their head coach,
but below him maybe, so maybe they all go go
out and uh get one said uh Seattle Seahawks safety
Thomas that one guy. Can you know, can we talk

(01:43:37):
about that? Because no, go ahead, come and get me.
That's what that was. Crazy guy. You know. For those
who who didn't see or didn't hear open Sleep at
the Wheel. After the after the Seahawks beat Dallas, Earl
Thomas sprinted past his locker room and all of the
Dallas Cowboy players all the way up to the front

(01:43:59):
of the Dallas Cowboys locker room and Jason Garrett hugged
him and said, hey, come and get me right coming,
meaning you know I'd love to play for the Dallas Cowboys. Kid, Yes,
And then in the press conference after he was asked
about it, and he was like, yeah, I mean I

(01:44:20):
didn't mean come get me right now, but yeah, I
would love to play for the Dallas Cowboys. Oh. By
the way, our team uh is in the playoff hunt
and we still have something to play for. But I'm
sitting here talking about you know, I want to go
to another team off the heels of in fighting with
teammates and All Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner. So you have

(01:44:42):
the two to all pro players on the Seahawks defense
going back and forth in the war of words for
that week, and then to hear that Earl Thomas wants out,
that's all fine and dandy, and that seems something that's odd.
But the fact of the matter is the Dallas Cowboys
gonna want a thirty year old safety when Earl Thomas
has let go by the Seattle They they they don't

(01:45:04):
want him, really, yeah, they don't want them. I can
see Jerry Jones doing that. I don't know if I
can see him. I don't know if it's in their
best interest to do that. I mean, whether it's in
their best interests or not. That's I mean, when has
that been the caveat for Jerry Jones to do or
not They've actually made though, they they've they've made a
lot better decisions personnel wise over the last few years,

(01:45:24):
and Steven Jones gets a lot of credit at least
with that, with the drafting of Dac with you know,
the the Ezekiel Elliott value, They've done some things that
that have propelled them into going in the right direction. Yeah,
Zack Martin over Johnny Manzel, he hit those decisions as well.
So it hasn't been it hasn't been all crazy Jerry
making the choices. Steven Jones is kind of leveled that

(01:45:44):
off with Dallas. But the Cowboys will be interesting to
see because if there's one thing you want to do
in the NFL, and that's run the ball, and they
can do that. It's just making sure everything else in
the house is in the order. Easy from Salam. I'm
Dan Buyer. This is the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox
Sports Radio, and Jason Garrett will be sticking around with
the Dallas Cowboys. There are some other teams that could
be looking forhead coaches. Which job is the best of

(01:46:07):
the punch. We'll tell you after David Gascon gives us
an update of what's happening as the Bowl season is
starting to get into full effects. Dan, and just a
friend of reminder for both of you, gentlemen, there's an awesome,
awesome audio clip that will be giving you in fourteen
minutes in the press. So look to it that you
guys will love it and it'll be a lot to

(01:46:28):
chew on minutes. Okay, alright, a lot to chew on.
I don't know, is that is that a plan on words? No? No, no,
you've spoken enough about Chick fil A and I was
making sure speaking of the bull games. One game that
win final earlier today the Heart of Dallas Bowl of
Utah and West Virginia. First and goal from the two.
They strink to two, strink with the formation to the left,
Huntley with Moss. They'll give itpe Tyler keeps it and

(01:46:51):
he'll get into the end zone on the right side
this time for a touchdown. Touchdown Tyler Huntley's radio network.
They went at thirty to fourteen. Zack Moss not the
how it had twenty carries for a hundred and fifty
yards and also one score. A bowl game that just
got underway is the quick Lane Bowl, no score hit
between Duke and Northern Illinois later on tonight U c

(01:47:12):
l A and Kansas State, and the Cactus Bowl without
the services us is of Josh Rosen, now switching on
over quickly to the National Football League Redskins nose Guards
Ziggy Hood done for the season with a fractured elbow.
Vans Joseph Denver, Bronco's head coach, did say that he
plans on using Paxton Lynch as the starting quarterback this
weekend against the Kansas City Chiefs. New England Patriots have

(01:47:34):
signed outside linebacker James Harrison Texans center Nick Martin. He's
on i R. He underwent successful ankle surgery today. And
one other note, Jeremy Curley, who's a fragent wider receiver
working out today with the Baltimore Ravens. James Harrison already
putting a picture up on social media of him and
Tom Brady joking he's no longer the oldest person on
the team, and that would be Tom Brady's got him

(01:47:56):
by a year or so. Look, man, say what you want.
He can still play, all right. He keeps his body
in shape was evident by his displeasure of not playing
as much for uh, you know, his his previous team
and the Steelers. So all it takes is a couple
of plays. Man, if he plays ten fifteen plays a

(01:48:18):
game in crucial pass rushing situations, he's still a load
to block. His leverage and speed coming off the edge.
It would be tough for anybody given the plour the
poor offensive line play this year across the board in
the league. I mean even top offensively looked at the
Oakland offensive line last night. I mean they were touted
as one of the top two offensive lines in the league.

(01:48:40):
And then you know that's that's one guy with three
other guys. Are four other guys that you know, we're
getting Pro Bowl considerations and and I think two other
guys have made the Pro Bowl on that on that line,
So it just was like they were not existed. But
we've seen that the whole year. Though we've seen offensive

(01:49:03):
lines just mill it in pretty much. Isn't that a scheme?
I've heard rumblings of a scheme issue. It's definitely a
scheme issue in Oakland. You can't take space movers and
make them zone blocking guys, that just doesn't work. I uh,

(01:49:23):
when I was in Denver, when I when I was
in Denver, my my last year in Denver, we were
zone blocking, right, Mike Shanna and Alex Gibbs. Zone block
Denver is synonymous and and famous for it. And then
I go and I go to Jacksonville and they run power,

(01:49:44):
they pull, they it's just a it's it's a gap
system instead of a zone block system. And I was
I would wait two pounds. Look, I can't line up
with someone and move them off the ball. I just
the defensive ends were heavier than me. They were three
oh five, three ten. I'm two eighty five trying to

(01:50:07):
move this guy five yards off the line of scrimmage.
I just didn't have the makeup to do that because
I'm used to going sideways and being fast and being
quick cutting off the back side to someone who had
to literally physically move a guy to three yards off
the line of scrimmage. And it just wasn't my it.
It didn't fit what I was able to do. That's

(01:50:27):
not saying that I'm not a good offensive lineman. But
what most people don't realize, but they see it in quarterbacks.
They see it in receivers, they see it in running backs.
Schemes matter to offensive line and defensive lineman as well.
If you have a young and fast athletic line, then yeah,
running the the zone scheme fits you well because you've

(01:50:49):
got guys who were like all the I think our
heaviest lineman in Denver at the time was Matt Lepsis
and he was like three hundred pounds. Are Tom Nayalan
are all pros inner Way like about two seventy. But
we were, you know, rushing for two thousand yards a year.
Clinton Porters had two back to bash rushing season because

(01:51:11):
we were great at what we did. Now you take
that same offensive line and you put him into a
system where they had to run counters and and a
gap scheme, then we don't get any yards. It doesn't
seem like it's cost effective either. If you're gonna play
pay Donald Penn and and let your suddenly the amount
of money that you did, isn't that to beat the
man across you and not to run out and get

(01:51:33):
to the spot. That's not It doesn't work. And that's
another reason why Jack del Rio is on the hot
seat is because you know, Jack is a defensive guy.
So he tends as a head coach too, I don't
want to ignore, but not pay as much attention as
you should as a head coach to the offensive side
of the ball. You should know this, Hey, we don't

(01:51:55):
need our guys are big guys trying to move sideways.
We need him to just chest Noson knows move these
guys off the ball, and we need to call plays
that benefits them. And that's what we're not seeing this
year out of Oakland Raiders. Is that enough to have
Jack del Rio lose his job? Just something of that
with the Oakland Raiders. You don't I mean, you don't

(01:52:15):
get that much you know, you don't get that much time.
Like they will pull the plug like we know that. Yeah,
you know though, you Hugh Jackson, you know our ship,
they will pull the plug on you. They don't give
you time to figure it out. With the core that
they have, they've definitely taken a step back from what
they I mean a year ago when they when they
had to play the playoff game with Connor Cook their

(01:52:37):
third string quarterback who was a rookie against the Texans,
you say, okay, what could have been with Derek Carr
with then Derek Carr comes back. They remember they they
ended up starting out the season with a game against
the Tennessee Titans, and you're like, okay, oh maybe this
this this Raiders team is something, and then it just
is not been put together at all. Easy from Salam.

(01:52:58):
I'm Dan Buyer, Jack del Rio. Yeah, we'll have to
see if he gets the walking papers on Monday or not.
We do expect Dodd doubting their offensive coordinator, to go
bye bye, but the Raiders still have a week to
play spoiler, even though the last night was spoiled as
they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles. This is the Doug
Gottlieb Show. Easy from Salam. I'm Dan Buyer. Reach us
on Twitter if you will. I'm at Dan Buyer on

(01:53:19):
Fox and you can get from at E from Salam.
Coming up next year on Fox Sports Radio. There is
a piece of audio that David Gascon is going to
provide to us that you are not going to want
to miss. We play it next year on Fox Sports Radio.
So Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. I'm Dan Buio.
That's E from Salam. As We're in for Doug today.
Doug doing the Herd on Colin Coward. You can also

(01:53:41):
see him on Fox Sports one doing a speak for yourself.
You know, I used to be a TV guy too,
and they've relegated his handsome face to radio. All right,
that's right, you're on, Come on Fox. You would talk
about everything, right, it was football. I mean we've talked
about a lot, yes and all that, so you would
have to be like, what's happening in La Liga with

(01:54:03):
FC Barcelona and you can do all that. Man, Come on, man,
I'm a worldly guy. It's a it's a big day here.
I'm Fox Sports Radio day after Christmas. Also, a happy
birthday is an order for the one and Eric Roberts,
our executive producer, years old. Happy birthday, years old. Here's
the deal. It's the golden birthday six on the congratulations.

(01:54:29):
What are the plans for the birthday? Um? Well, I'm
producing the next show, so alright, for the next two hours,
I will be in these in this very spot, and
then I'll probably just got the dinner. Nothing. It's gonna
play some Xbox tonight. Man. What a big gamer? I'm not. Yeah,
Everything about you says gamer, even even that earring you
try to put on and make itself. This is the

(01:54:51):
second time. This is the second time he's brought up
my plugs on air. And you think you're just bitter man.
You don't. You don't got nice nor hear rings of
the bee's knees. You guys don't believe this. I had
an earring in college, yes, for about a month exactly,
but it then got it. I was gosh, the sophomore

(01:55:12):
in college, we were going I had some friends who
were from Ohio and we were going to a weekend.
We were going to go to Ohio State and hang
out with their friends and have a big party weekend.
And I'm nineteen and I'm thinking, why not get the
ear pierce a big road trip. It was infected like
three weeks later and it was red and so so yeah,
we took it out. That was That was an end

(01:55:34):
of an era. That was that was over pretty quickly. Yeah, yeah,
I can see that. And thank god it was the
vance Joseph era in Denver could be longer than what
having the time of his life. Uh uh. And for
this gift, Eric, on your birthday, we bring you the
press with David Gascon today. Yeah, how about that? The press?

(01:55:56):
This is where Dave gets us up today and on
what's happening in the world with sports? Yeah, sports, and
uh some other exclusive audio or some interesting audio that
we can't wait to hear. I was kind of hoping
it would be a cliff On Earring like bender from
the breakfast we went to. We went to the here
sing Pagoda real deal, took the gun and then they
said that you have to keep the stud in for

(01:56:17):
a while. I wanted to go straight hoop right away
because we were good and that was the problem, and
then the backing was to It was not one of
my proudest moments. Something else that no one else heard
with the Beasney. He's by fram and Gascon just used
a breakfast club. Breakfast, come on bringing it back, baby.
The high school is now a sheriff's office in suburban Illinois.

(01:56:41):
I'm a big movies are awesome. Yeah, absolutely, breakfast club
to Eric on his birthday, my sister and her husband
and Marine Matt Chandler listening to the show. He's also
a big Jimmy g fans, so he's read He's taken
apparently by for just for the weekend. Going up, buddy, gentlemen,

(01:57:02):
I'm gonna save this press clip for just one moment too,
because Landon Collins was on the uh The Michael K
Show today and he was asked a question about a
new head coach coming in next year and what he
would talk about with the secondary Listen to this and
a bob, but you can lower the bed for a
little bit some good audio that you guys can chew on.
It's always just one on one corner that he needs

(01:57:23):
to grow up, and ye all know who that is.
I would be that be the only person I would
change that secondary group. Besides that, the two guys they
are you know, Jack Rabbit. I love those two guys.
They loved it what they do. But first pick I
don't think we don't. He's a cancer and that would
be well if okay, if he's talking about Genores Jenkinson,
Dominic Rogers, the good guys, that would mean Eli Apple

(01:57:47):
is the bad apple or the cancer. Wow, that's that's heavy.
Have you ever like a player coming out and said
I like how he did it, like process of elimination.
I was like, I not gonna shay his name. Everybody
else I'm cool with except the guy and where he
was picked. Yeah, that's uh you're talking about dysfunction. That

(01:58:09):
is the under in dysfunction in the dictionary. Has that
whole trio of of cornerback Listen, We've got we got
a Bowl game tonight with Josh Rose and not playing
for u C l A. And then there was the
report that Rosun would rather play for the Giants than
the Cleveland Browns. Okay, you talk about this dysfunction like like,

(01:58:30):
how do you not see that the Giants are just
as far up the chain as the Cleveland brown Sea,
but at least you're in New York, Like if Cleveland
was a great Just like basketball, nobody's going to Cleveland
unless Lebron is there and you're winning. Period. You're not
going to Cleveland in football unless they're winning because you

(01:58:50):
have to live in Cleveland. Shout out to Cleveland, fun
times to Cleveland landing Collins by the way, it would
have been better if he would have said rotten apple
then that that would have been better. But we barely
was able to make out what he was saying, so
I didn't I don't think he would have been able

(01:59:10):
to uh drop that jewel on us as a corner.
But you what, wait what Still that's a heck of
a shot. You just mentioned Josh Rosen. He was actually
quoted as saying, I'd rather be a lower pick at
the right team than a higher one on the wrong team.
It's interesting. He's not going to play the night in
the Cactus Bowl against Kansas State, But would you play

(01:59:33):
in the Cactus Bowl? No? Well, I would also say
this if he was getting an NFL contract ten years ago. Oh,
let's put me on the bad team. Now that the
salaries in the NFL, I mean, you're gonna waste five
years of your life. It's your second contract, that's what's
going to make you money. So obviously that's the case
with Josh Rosen and gentlemen. One other note in the

(01:59:54):
National Football League, Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians he
doesn't plan on stepping down at the season end. A
lot of people reporting that he would retire or quit
because of health concerns. That's not the case anymore. He's
gonna reevaluate this situation come February. I guarantee he is
not the coach next year. Now we all know that.
We all know that, but he's not gonna Just like

(02:00:16):
remember when Tom Coffin was like yeah, I'm not stepping down.
I still want to be here. And then they have
a ceremony ussuring him and his grandkids out of the building.
But yeah, but I think Arians is like, I just
don't think he wants to let the cat out of
the bag before week seventeen. I get it, because you
don't want to have to answer all those questions going
up until you know what could be your last game.
You want to just focus on the game, the standard.

(02:00:38):
We're just focusing on what's in front of us. And
yet at Monday then they're gone. He was like, well
it was you know saw that coming. It's just how
It's just how, it's how it goes. And I mean
he's a good coach. Uh he does miraculous things with quarterbacks. Uh.
So you know, whether he's done with football altogether or
he will be you know somewhere else, we'll see. But

(02:00:58):
he's a good coach. Arizona just just ran into too
many injuries many and there was just like, yeah, they're
really yeah they were. They were the oldest team, they're
best players, the oldest receiver in the league, So go
figure that maybe a healthy David Johnson could take care
of things. Yeah, boy did they miss him right? Oh man,
thanks Dave, appreciate it. It out there and press, that

(02:01:21):
was the press, all right. We found out today that
from is truly in love with Jimmy Garoppo, but by
other media. I've got to be honest, it seems like
that love affair is stretching. Why is there anything that
can put your love affair over the top to let
Jimmy G know that. I mean, aside from the romantic
chick fil amen, if I was getting married, if I

(02:01:41):
wasn't always married, already married, I would invite him to
be my best man, maybe take him to Vegas. I'm
just saying
