Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. What up America, Doug
Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, coming to you from the
sunny City of Angels. There's no cyclone bomb here, there's
no SNOWMA get in here, seventies six and sunny, and

(00:23):
uh yeah, we'll get to Paul George getting out the
plane in l A going back with a dub Why
that wasn't as good a trip, wasn't as good a
win last night as uh or or tonight even as
they take on the Clippers, as one might, when might,
when might think? But we'll get to that. Speaking of
the City of Angels, Look, we'll we'll Bucky Brooks is

(00:44):
gonna join us. We'll get his breakdown to the two quarterbacks,
Donald and Rosen. We'll also get his take on the
upcoming playoffs and how much, um, how much it changes,
how much it's gonna change. No DeMarco Murray for the
NFC Titans, how much has that change? That match up
against the Kansas City Chiefs. So we'll get you ready

(01:04):
for the playoffs, get you ready for the wild card.
We can get you ready for the draft. But I
do want to start with Donald and Rosen because it
was like fifteen minutes apart. It was almost as if
they were sitting next to each other on the couch
playing Madden, be like, hey man, you want to go pro? Yeah,
you want to go pro? Yeah, let's do it. You
send the text out first. No, you know, you know,
you come on. They're like, all right, Rose Chambeau, Rose Chambeau,

(01:27):
and one one in Rose Chambo Like, no, no, best
out of three, best out of five, best out of seven.
Let's do a series. But's say fifteen minutes of each other.
They both end up sources close to them they're going pro.
And we've had other quarterbacks, even recently, Jamis Winston Marcus
Mariotta tied at the hip. Both come out. Both could

(01:50):
have been the number one overall pick Mariota in the playoffs,
albeit with a team that has a negative differential. Jamis
Winston coming off kind of an embarrassing meltdown and an
embarrassing season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which would lead
many to believe that Mariota is ahead of where, uh

(02:10):
where Jamis is. But I don't know how true it is.
I think I think Mariot is good, but I think
the ceiling appears to be lower than people would perceive,
and the same could be said for Uh for Jamis,
although Jamis might have a higher ceiling, might have a
lower ceiling than some would perceive when he came out,
but a higher ceiling than Marcus Mariota, even though Mariota

(02:33):
has been more consistent and more solid than than Jamie's.
But we've had quarterbacks tied to how you go back
to Ryan Leaf and Peyton Manning and going one too
and and one having one of the great careers in
the history of the game, and the other one now
being a spokesperson for what not to do on and

(02:54):
off the football field. I mean, look, we had two
years ago we had Jared off cost Carson Wentz, and
last year was like Wentz, why did they take off?
This year it's like, you know, Wentz could be the
m v P League, But GoF is not that bad.
So we've had others tied together. But I can't remember
a time in which we've had two quarterbacks not just

(03:15):
played in the same city as collegiate quarterbacks, but grew
up in the same area. And yet they they are
as similar as my twin daughters. I bring this up
all the time. I have eleven year old twin daughters,
harper In Chris and Um. They both they both kind
of like Donald and Rose and both love football. They
both love horses, but they could that's kind of where

(03:38):
the they have the same birthday, the same parents, live
in the same address, and both love the same sport
or the same animal. Um, but they could not be
more dissimilar, and it's it's fascinating to watch. Even when
they played against each other this year, they call see um,
Rosen just makes some pleasure, like, well, that dog will
hunt in the NFL, Like I'm not really sure actually

(04:00):
what I'm supposed to look for, Like I text my GM,
but he's like that kind of felt like an NFL
th row to when I'm watching people play, Like I
think I know, but like, look, you don't have to
know much, you know, Like Rosen looks like well every
guy we're told is supposed to look like making NFL
throws in college as opposed to Donald. Sometimes then sometimes
it's kind of a mess, but then he ends up

(04:22):
making a play. And yet at the end of the game,
Donald's team ends up with more points than Rosen, which
kind of his confirmation bias for what we always thought
Rosen looks the part, checks a bunch of boxes, But
does he love it? Is he a team guy? Can
he raise rise his team up to being a winner?
As opposed to Donald common organic guy, right, Like you know,

(04:45):
organic guy, guy who doesn't shave, guy who doesn't bathe,
guy who doesn't believe, uh he believes in conspiracy theories
and believes in not in deodorant. Right, guy who still
drives a Vida van. You know, hey man, it's just
the organic man. But there's something truly lovable about being organic,
as opposed to the guy who has always wears a

(05:08):
boss suit, black shirt, white shirt, black tie, black suit,
nice shoes, nice watch, nice cufflings, smoothly combed hair like
looks the part. Everybody're like something's wrong underneath. That's the
difference in the two. It's even where they're from. Like
I've tried to explain to people that everybody thinks all
of southern California is the same and all beach towns
are the same. Sam Donald is from an area of

(05:31):
Orange County called San Clemente. It's basically the last outpost
before you get to a now defunct, now shut down
nuclear power plant known as Santaofrey. After that it's kind
of barren waste land, and then you get to Camp
Pendleton's right before you get to Camp Penalton, it's like
where they do like military exercise if you're going down
the five Freeway towards San Diego and eventually to Mexico.

(05:51):
Like San Clementi is a great place to grow up,
it's a cool place to live. It's kind of still
got some grungy beach town to it um on the
other hand, on the other hand, like it's really you
can't really live in l A and work in l
A and live in San Clementy. You can't really live
in San Diego, work in San Diego and live in

(06:12):
San Many. It's kind of like that's a place you're from.
Whereas Josh Rosenes, he's from Manhattan Beach Ivy League educated parents,
Manhattan Beaches where anybody who has money and has to
work in l A they like to live there. And
one it's a beach town, but to it also has

(06:33):
its own school district, right, so because as their own
school district, you don't have to kind of populate with
the rest of Los Angeles. You're you're you're kind of
like Los Angeles, only you're kind of above the freight.
You're kind of like Vanderbilt is in the SEC, right,
the rest of the SEC kind of dirty grade schools,
but not that academically German. Vanderbilt's like, look, we like
to do things, and we like to do things a

(06:53):
little bit beyond approach academically. Right. That that's how how
it is. Manhattan Beach is a place you moved to.
Centilmoni is a place that you're from secomenties. You got
second third generation Californians, like, hey man, let's go hit
the waves, Let's go play some Paul, let's go do
some stuff. Whereas Manhattan Beaches a lot of first generation

(07:13):
people who just moved in from out of state, other
parts of California. I let punch of Los Angeles, have kids,
have money, move there. Why you can work in l
A and you don't have to worry about l A, U,
S D schools. Like there's just a difference. Even in
this was last week when they were asked about the
possibility of going to the NFL and where they want
to be draft. Take a listen to the difference in

(07:35):
the two responses. First year's Josh Rosen, I think the
teams no more than I do in the sense of
where I would best fit. I might be a little
bit of a unique personality, so hopefully they can pick
me apart. If a team really feels that I'm like
their guy, hopefully they'll they'll go and get me. I'd
rather be a lower pick at the right team than
uh than to hire it the wrong team, right, Like, Look,

(07:59):
and that's honestly, that's an incredibly intelligent and thoughtful statement.
That's something that I actually I believe in life. I
we joke, we joke on air off air about a
bit worked at three different networks, and you know what
people ask about each each one of them, and like
what's different, Like, look, not every network is for every talent.

(08:21):
You have to find the right fit. You have to
find people that understand you, the bright time slot, the
right supporting cast, like and it's no no different with
your job, Like that's a really thoughtful, mature statement, Like, hey, listen,
I think the teams know a lot. I think I
know him a little bit different. You know, I'm from
a good background. I know what I want to know,
what type of offense I gotta But here's a kid

(08:43):
who the the The scatter report on Josh Rosen is
he's a little too smart, Kvin know it all. He
thinks he has all the answers. We're not sure if
he loves football as much as he is just good
at football and it's what he does because he heard
his shoulder playing tennis. Now, same essential question asked on

(09:06):
I think it was one day later to John to
Josh Rosen, to to that was Josh Rosen. This is
Sam Donald. You know, whenever I come out to go
to the NFL, I think I'd be honored to play
for any team. Uh. It's it's been a dream of
mine for such a long time to play in the
NFL and any team that would want to give me
that opportunity to be a part of the organization that

(09:26):
me in the world to me, yeah, which is kind
of like an organic hey man, kind of You don't
almost hear the tone undertones of of surfer in his voice, right,
hey man, wherever they want to play me, I'll play.
I just love the love the beach. I love the waves, man, Like. Yeah,
even a bad day at the beach is a day
at the beach, right, That's what it kind of sounds

(09:47):
like whereas and even uh, you know, I just I've
always dreamed of playing in the NFL, don't end that's
the reputation of Sam Donald kind of amazing right now?
In fair in this to Sam Donald and the and
the idea that he's more of a winner as opposed
to Josh Rosen's more of a refined quarterback. He did

(10:09):
play at USC, which has for the life of its
football program always one more than U c l A.
He was surrounded by better players, and whether or not
he was surrounded by better coaching staff or not, like
the fact that USC beats u c l A shouldn't
be a surprise. So no matter who the quarterback was,
like if you switched teams with a result have been

(10:29):
the same. I guess maybe, and so some of this
is confirmation by us. Well, I only thought that Josh
Rosen was not the winner at Sam Donald, and Sam
Donald beats Josh Rosen, even though Josh Rosen looks better
in a loss. But wouldn't you rather win ugly than
lose pretty? Josh Rosen loses pretty. I think it's fascinating.

(10:50):
Maybe I'm the only one who thinks has this level
of fascination with it. I don't think I am, but
I think it's fascinating that two guys from essentially the
same area, playing in the same league, in the same
town are gonna go one two in the draft. And look,
you can tell me, like the Cleveland Browns can position themselves. Hey,
we're got a first round pick. We could pass on
a guy. We don't have to have a quarterback. No chance.

(11:11):
You can't pass in subsequent years on Golf and Wentz
and Deshaun Watson and you can't pass on all these
dudes and have a new general manager still need a quarterback.
And do I think Sae Kwon Barkley is good enough?
You know, because he's far and away the best running
back in college. Sure. Sure, But the idea that the

(11:38):
idea that the Browns aren't gonna take a quarterback of
the Giants are gonna take a quarterback one too, They're
gonna go and I think they're there. Their answers, their background,
their styles, the programs they come from, the winds and losses.
It tells the story of two very very different that
if you look on paper, like, oh, Southern California quarterbacks
both coming to the draft kind of gotta be similar,

(11:59):
could not be more dissimilar. This just in Steelers wide
receiver Jujuice Smith Schuster is gonna join me at three
forty five Eastern time. I want to ask him about
that block going back a couple weeks ago with the
against the Cincinnati Bengals. Gonna ask him about getting ready
for the playoffs this first season. I'm gonna ask him
abut his former quarterback Sam Donald declaring for the NFL Draft,
But Bucky Brooks joins me up upcoming next well compared

(12:20):
and contrast Donald and Rosen plus get you ready for
the wild card weekend that's next. But first, um, I

(13:51):
Doug Olive Show, Fox Sports Radio. M m m m
m m m m mmm. Juju Smith Schuster of the
Pittsburgh Steelers gonna join me at three forty five Eastern time.
That's upcoming in UM twenty five minutes. In the meantime,
let's get to Bucky Brooks from the NFL Network. We
have Dan and Jeremiah on weekly. He and Bucky uh

(14:14):
co host a podcast called Move the Sticks. They break
down obviously NFL stuff. We'll get to wild Card weekend
UM and and figure out it seems like a formality
in the a f C NFC. I kind of think
that Rams Falcons game is gonna be super, super competitive.
I could be wrong, but I want to get his
thoughts immediately on the news of last night, which has

(14:35):
become the news of the day. It's not a surprise,
but let's react to it. Sam Donald, Josh Rosen both
going pro um Bucky let me. I kind of painted
the picture of if you listen to how they talk,
they're different, they're from different You live in Southern California,
different beach towns in southern California. You know Rosen Manhattan
Beach where you got moved to. Uh, Donald is from

(14:58):
San Clemente, somewhere that you're from. Donald's more kind of organic,
just gets back there and play. Rosen is much more refined.
Give me your thoughts as a guy who has played
in this league and been the front office in this league.
When you see those two quarterbacks, which which do you
think is more likely uh to to hit in the
league than the other. I want to give you a

(15:20):
basketball analogy, Doug. I believe Josh Rosen is a shooter.
Sam Donald is a score and so when you look
at Josh ro it's a really good analogy. By the way,
that's a that's a very good I don't know if
other people understand how good analogy that one is. Yeah,
Josh Rosen is a guy that he plays the game
the way that you want to draw it up in
a text book foot work. Bud the Control on Talent

(15:43):
understands it looks like the quarterback that has been playing
in the league for the last fifty years. Sam Donald
is an athletic playmaker, more of a gun slinger. It
isn't always pretty, that isn't effective. And then when you
couple the fact that he can kind of power his
way to make some things happen, and he has a
competitive spirit that allows him to raise his game and

(16:04):
critical moments. He just finds a way to get it done.
The issues that you have when evaluating both of them.
If you are an offensive coordinator that wants to play
the game like a video game, Josh Rosen is the
ideal joystick. You say what I want to do, he
does it the way that you want it, and you
kind of go. If you're a guy that is comfortable

(16:24):
with a guy that kind of just is a free
flowing playmaker and Sam Donald is your guy, I think
the thing that really separates them and why to be
a tough eval for decision makers. Sam Donald's personality fits
in all thirty two buildings. Josh Rosen's personality may turn
some people off. And so when it comes down to

(16:45):
making that decision on who do I want to be
the face of my franchise, who gotta trust to be
the leader of my team, some people are gonna skew
more towards Sam Donald because he's more of the everyman
than a well read, opinionated Josh Rosen. Uh set Kwan
Barkley declared he's obviously likely to be the first running
back taken UM. We've seen, you know, highly drafted running

(17:08):
backs from UM a really kind of hit this year.
I'm just wondering, though, in your evaluation, is there any
way you take if you're the Giants who have needed
running back UM forever and they could roll with Eli,
they could roll with Eli Manning for a couple more
years and you could have his uh Sae Kwon Barkley
and in Odell Beckham Jr. Is there any way you

(17:29):
take a running back see Kwon Barkley ahead of either
two quarterbacks. I think that's a great just is And
I think a lot of it depends on what you
think about Eli Manning. If you feel like, hey, maybe
we can get two, three or four more years out
of Eli Manning, Maybe we invest in the state Juan Barkley,
and maybe we transformed our team like the New Orleans
Saints have transformed their team with the running backs kind

(17:52):
of leading the way and the quarterback being the guy
that can finish the game if we need him to
finish it. That might be an effective strategy with hell
back in the se Kjuan and Eli and the Giants
going forward. But if you're seeing the same, but we
never pick up in the top five. We know that
Eli has an exploration date that is coming. Do maybe
we take one of these quarterbacks and we now have

(18:14):
a succession plan in place. I think a lot of
it depends on your evaluation of Eli Manning and how
you want your franchise to go forward. Wait, he does
eventually walk away from the game. That's Bucky Brooks from
the NFL Network. Moved the Sticks is the podcast he
joins us here on the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox
Sport Trader. Let's let's get to Let's get to the
playoff games upcoming this weekend. Um, my first thought is

(18:38):
that that Falcons Rams game. It feels like the Rams
are stepping into it. I know that the four seeds
seems to be a better seed because you've got the
chance of playing Philadelphia that comes limping in with with
no real offense. But you get the Falcons, who say
whatever you want about their season. There's still the Falcons,
DeVonta Freeman back. They seem to figure out at least
a little bit better rhythm offensively. Uh, they still have

(19:00):
arguably the best wide receiver in the game, pretty athletic
defense and They've played these games before and you have not.
Am I crazy to think that that's a game that
that if it doesn't, it should scare the Rams and
the Rams fans. It's just scared of Rams. I think
the rest of the NFE should be scared about the
Atlanta Falcons. And the reason I say that is because
this will be the first time since the Super Bowl

(19:21):
that the Falcons are able to play three and loose.
They made it to the tournament and they're coming in
as an underdog. All season. They had to kind of
play with the burden of being the team that lost
the big lead in the Super Bowl. Well, now that's off.
They're an experienced team. They just went to the dance.
They knew exactly what it took to get there. I

(19:42):
think that is a dangerous team to face. When you're
the l A Rams, it's your first time you're playing
at home, everyone in the homestands expecting you to get
it done. If the a NTA Falcons can jump on
the Rams early, it works in reverse on the Rams
and they begin to feel the pressure. I believe we
will see the best Atlanta that we've seen this year,

(20:03):
and I think that might be good enough to get
them all the way to the championship game. Let's get
to the other Saturday game. Uh, you know, look, it's
impossible not to look at Kansas City and think, you know,
they went in and beat New England earlier, and I
know both teams have kind of evolved and they're different,
and there's no Eric Berry since that game, and and
Kansas City has gone but Kansas City has beaten them before.
But and then I see Tennessee and Tennessee like they've

(20:26):
given up more points than they scored. Now DeMarco Murray's
out for the game. How competitive do you think this
game is gonna be a lot of turns on Tennessee's
ability to slow down the Chiefs offense, and they can
slow it down like some teams that being able to
slow it down and um in terms of like play
cover to to high safety, not let Tyreek Hill or
Travis Kelsey get over the top. Make them kind of

(20:49):
drive it down in a very methodical fashion and hope
that Alex Smith or someone turns it over. They can
do it. I think the big thing will be can
Marcus Mariota generate enough place I thought it was telling
last week to Veterans win to Marcus Mariota and told him, Hey,
you need to be you. You need to be the
dude that played in Oregon. Use your feet one around,

(21:10):
make plays, don't worry about playing according to the script,
overcome the coaching. And so if Marcus Mariota plays like
a playground legend, they could have a puncher's chance and
knocking off the Chiefs. Right now, I think the Chief's
offense is a little too good for them to uh lose.
I think I think I've been Chiefs them of winning
this one alright, really quickly, let me get to the

(21:30):
Sunday games. Jus Ship Smith, Juju Smith, Shooter is gonna
join us around the around the corner. Bucky Brooks joining us,
uh from from the NFL network is the Doug Gotlip
Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um, I look at
the Panthers and they've already lost twice the Saints, and
you look at the inconsistency of Kim Newton. I mean,
I guess I give him a puncher's chance, but it

(21:53):
feels like both the home teams should be uh prohibitive
favorites to win. Do you see any upsets in the
Sunday games. I mean, I think it's gonna be tough
for carol on the win. The only way that they
can win is the Cam plays like Superman and does
everything that we've seen him do when he won the
m v P. If not, I think it's gonna be
tough for Carolina to score enough points to match the

(22:13):
New Orleans Saints, and because the Saints have come to
own them this season, I don't know how that changes
unless he changes and plays better in the other game.
I think the Buffalo Bill Jackson to the Jaguars game
is really compelling because you have two teams that are
driven by their defenses. If Shade McCoy plays, doesn't play,
I think it makes it tough because Tyrod Taylor has
to do everything and I don't know if he has

(22:33):
a supporting cast to really threaten the Jaguars. I think
the magic number is twenty one. Whichever team is able
to get to twenty one, I think that's gonna be
the number that wins it. I'm gonna say that Jackson
the Jaguars get it done only because they're healthier, and
I think they'll find the way to keep Lake Borders
on the short lease and that might be good enough
for them to win the first round. I would agree,
and it would set up potentially a rematch of a

(22:54):
game which they won earlier in the year against Pittsburgh
Stither's last. Smith Schuster about that upcoming and meantime, Bucky Brook.
Check out his podcast Move the Sticks with our man
Daniel Jeremiah. Follow him on Twitter as well, or watch

coming in fifteen minutes, Let's go to dan Fire and

(23:39):
find out what else is going on the world of sports.
You were just talking with Bucky about that Bill's Jaguars game.
Mark keis Lee expected to go for Jacksonville as the
wide receiver will return from an ankle injury. According to
the NFL Network again. Shady McCoy's status up in the air.
Didn't practice today because of an ankle injury, but did
take part in the team stretching portion of the workout.
But then let's bag this field. That's that's big. It's

(24:02):
that's big. It was. He was then escorted off by
a coach, but ed coach Sean McDermott said that McCoy
is heading in the right direction if he question is
if he gets to the destination, which is that wild
card game on Sunday on time Titans want to running
back to Marco Murray. He's been ruled out of their
wild card games Saturday in Kansas City because of a

(24:22):
nice sprain. Jets GM Mike mccagnan told ESPN New York
he'd be open to trading up in the draft to
take a quarterback, as the Jets will pick sixth overall
in this Springs draft. L s U Sound defensive coordinator
David rand It to a four year, ten million dollar contracts,
making him the first college football assistant to make more
than two million dollars per season. Warriors won't have Coverned
durrant to night against the Rockets out because of a

(24:44):
cash strain. Tiger Woods has announced he will play the
Farmers Insurance Open starting on January that Tory, Pines and
Tiger also committing to the Genesis Open at Riviera in
mid February. In l A. Doug So, and, uh, we'll
talk about a living more about this later, but Dan,
you were I mean you were at Tory last year,
and I think you didn't you hang out with Ricky
last year? I remember that I was able to walk

(25:07):
during the pro am with Ricky Fowler and the group
that he was playing with and a couple of other
lucky winners from the Gulf Digest Fox Sports Radio contest.
So yeah you walk. Uh, let's Ricky Fowler and Butch Harmon,
who's some considered the greatest teacher there was in golf.
Let's just be honest, Ricky walk with you? Yeah, Like
like like Ricky's sitting there going like Dan Buyer, Yeah

(25:28):
that was I was with Dan Byner like really Dan
by Yeah, yeah, he was awesome. He's like, wow, I
love that when you do the press with Doug Ricky,
Ricky is actually he's awesome, dude. But um, okay, so
you're you're going to be the perfect guy, because you
and I will be down there this year and I
just I'm I'm gonna be amazed by your reaction to

(25:50):
the level of hype and the kind of buzz around
the course last year. Goodfield, you're there with Ricky Fowler,
who was one of the most popular golfers to this year.
Where Tiger Woods is back right, Yes, and they are.
They are different fields, for sure, Doug. They're different major
fields when Tiger is there and Tiger isn't. Even majors
feel different when Tiger is around, So it'll be amazing. Yeah,

(26:12):
I'm I'm, I'm I've been on team Tiger. I've helped
my Tiger stock through the through the bad times, through
the bottom out. There's a new CEO with with the
Tiger Woods Company and hopefully turn the stock around. Um. Look,
last night was if I'm so. The Thunder are in
town for for two games and they're playing on back
to back nights. A lot of teams come in and

(26:33):
they play in Los Angeles, they play the Lakers, they
have a night off to play the Clippers. Um, the
Thunder have been in town for for three days now,
and Russell Westbrook, you know he's I'm not gonna recruit
Paul George. I'm you know, championship, that's how you recruit guys,
and like that sounds cool. And look, Russell Westbrooks from
Los Angeles, So it's it's not that there's there's It

(26:54):
doesn't blow you away at all when you get to
Los Angeles from Los Angeles, even when you sign the
biggest count Teckn the history of the NBA. So I
don't hold it against Russell westbrook in terms of the
should be recruited him not recruiting. What he says, what
guys say on camera doesn't really matter. Like Paul George
said on camera before the ESPN game, like, hey, I'm
planning on playing here, you know, I'd like to retire here,
like meaning Oklahoma City, Like that sounds great. Look I

(27:17):
was in Oklahoma City and I am not a native son,
but they treat me like I'm a native son because
I played college basketball there, did local radio there, and
so I I frankly, I I if the opportunity arose
and well, and it was the right thing, Like I
have no problem live in Oklama City or in Tulsa, UM.

(27:39):
But I would point out it was like fifteen degrees
and windy, and you get off the plane and you
get to southern California and um Ramos, what would you say,
it's seventy nine in the valley. Today it's seventy five
and Newport Beach. Paul George already has a house in
Newport Beach. Right, good weather. Yeah, it's I mean, it's

(28:02):
it's spect it's you don't when you're here, you take
it completely for granted. You just do. You're like, it's sunny,
what's the big deal, It's like different levels of warm.
You start to complain like, oh man, it was forty
five and forty five and something. California feels like twenty
five elsewhere because you're just not used to it. But
if you've been elsewhere and in the middle of winter,
you come to Los Angeles like, well what am I

(28:23):
thinking about? Like this is really a discussion. And then
I saw his dad sitting courtside, and his dad had
a hat on that said like Los Angeles. I don't
know if you guys saw it was it was. It
was kind of a His dad was just could not
be happier or prouder. Dad mom sitting their courtside with
the Lakers Lakers. Obviously somebody got him some tickets like

(28:44):
perfect Jack Nielson. And so I don't know how to
explain this to people because it might I'm looking for
the perfect analogy music and ramos. Maybe you guys know
they could not have embarrassed the Lakers more. The Lakers
quit last night, and the thought they're good, but they're
not that good, Like, let's let's be honest. Carmelo Anthony
is not. He's a defensive always been a defensive liability,

(29:06):
even more so now he's become a very good jump shooter,
only because uh, frankly, he doesn't go buy people anymore. Right,
but um, Carmelo gotta go ahead of Humming. And I
mean they nearly won by authority last night. So I
think the fans says, well, like, why would you go
play for the Lakers when you know the thunder is

(29:26):
so much better that your dollar can go further. You know,
you play with Russell Westbrook, you play with Carmelo Anthony.
But when you're from Los Angeles and you're like, wait,
I could be one of the signature players the Lakers.
My dad could said courtside, my dad mom could say courtside.
Whenever they want and oh yeah, by the way, like

(29:47):
most of those guys, the Lakers aren't gonna be there
next year anyway. I think they're gonna build around Kuzma
and uh and Lonzo Ball and maybe a little bit
of Josh Hart and everybody else's did. Everybody else is
gonna be elsewhere next year. They're gonna prime bring in
Lebron or another superstar. And so I think what happens
is the common fan thinks, well, last night sealed the

(30:08):
deal now and then tonight he's gonna beat the Clippers
and be like, man, we come in. It's so much
cooler to come in with a good team and beat
your hometown teams and go home with all that money
and all that success, like yeah, or you could just
come here and win. I don't think last night did
anything to change what what what's going on in Paul
George's mind? Right Like that dude's coming to l A.

(30:34):
His dad looked like a guy who was like I could,
I could, I could do this. Remember like he went
to Fresno State. It's not like a guy who, look,
I've done the l A thing. I went to u C.
L A. I played. He's been in Indiana and now
he's in Oklahoma City. Man, what would it be like
to be a Laker? And if your owl's Paul George

(30:55):
twenty eight or twenty nine years old, If you're Paul George,
remember you grew up when you grew up. A lot
of a lot of who we are is based upon
not just um where we grew up, but the time
in which we grew up. The the example is, I mean,

(31:15):
I use this all the time. There's lots of radio
guys in my position that whole use Animal House references
and Caddyshack references like go look when those movies were made.
You're listening audience, some of the dudes will have listened to,
but a lot of the guys haven't. Like a lot
of guys think Old School is an old movie. Paul

(31:37):
George grew up in southern California when the Lakers were
winning championships. That's his image of the Lakers. He knows
what it's like. He knows he thinks of Staples Center
when it opened as that's all he probably knows as
the home of the Lakers. Like you didn't think like
I do of the Lakers. In the Forum and show
Time Lakers like he doesn't have any reference point because

(31:58):
he's not old enough for that. So I don't think
last night did anything other than kind of humiliate the
current Lakers. Start to wonder can Luke Walton turned this
thing around? Is he the right coach? But it also
didn't derail the idea that Paul George joined up in
l A next year. This season makes tough jobs easier

our Fox Sports One colleague, Washington State's Alex Grinch that's
the defensive coording to Washington State is headed to Ohio
State as the new co defensive coordinator to the phenomenal
job in Pullman and the Mountain Union product is now
headed home to work for O s U. So he
will be quote defensive coordinatre with Greg Schiano. Wow, how
about that? So Wazoo gives a big new contract uh

(33:36):
to Mike Leach, but they lose their defensive coordinator who
had you know, like look, leeches problem for years has
been not a good enough defense had a good enough
defensive coordinator, and now loses that defensive coordinator. Kind of
what I was saying about L s U. Where um
for the show? You know L s US defensive coordinates
at a four year, ten million dollar deal. Like, I

(33:57):
don't know, if you're Washington State, could you come from
money for Mike Leach? Like yeah? Or you could funnel
as much money as you can to Alex Grinch just
the support staff, the surrounding staff, make them, make them
the highest paid guys head coaches. I'm not saying Mike
Leach isn't replaceable. Mike Leach wouldn't go anywhere. I don't
go anywhere at all, um, I'm excited to catch up

(34:20):
with Juju Smith Schuster. He's had now standing rookie rookie year.
He's gonna join us here momentarily on the Doug Gollip Show.
A lot to get to his former quarterback Sam Donald
declared for the NFL Draft. I'm gonna ask him about that.
I want to ask him how many how many dinners
have been picked up since the Vonte has perfect hit, right, like,
we gotta there has to be it has to be

(34:42):
a couple and then you just know this. But he John,
do you have a you have a dog? Yes? Our
dog is a Oliver. Is his name Oliver? Kind of
a human name for a dog? You call him? You
call him Ali like no, sorry, John, please probably Oliver, Molly.

(35:03):
That's exactly right, So you call them molly. Um, what
kind of dogs? He's a yes? Uh chu chu you
can say. I think you have to say she too, Yes,
I know what you're trying to not say. She's really
gonna get fired over saying. And she's yeah. Okay, um, okay.

(35:25):
That's a little dog, isn't it. Yes, Yes, a little dog.
We like little dogs. Big dogs don't fly from me.
I love dogs, but not the big ones. I just
they knock people over. I guess my mom's ninety, so
I don't want a dog to like run over and
knock her down or something like that. So yeah, but
then little dogs are kind of yappy, and then you
can trip over them because you can't see him right

(35:46):
and you're worried about stepping on them. That is also
true to be honest and be fair, Yes that is true.
But I just feel a little more big an anti
big dog eye. That's what you are, juju. I think
just got a bulldog? Okay, Yeah. The thing about dogs
are like you, it's oh you got you got a friend?
He got a frenchie. Um English bulldogs super gassy. French

(36:07):
bulldogs are really really cute, but they have all can
they all have all kinds of like health potential health issues.
So I just don't know, like how and I've seen
this French bulldog. It is really really cute, really cute.
I'm a huge dog guy. We have a dog and
a cat. Um my kids. I have a daughter and
a son that's super into the cat. The cats kind

(36:30):
of into me, but the cats into anybody who feeds it.
But she'll like, cats are just cats are kind of
like like women, right, Like they get attention when they
need attention. Otherwise they're like, hey, I'm good, you go
do your thing. All right, all right, Juju is gonna
join us to the top of the hour. We'll ask
him about about this dog, dogs that take over your life.

(36:52):
I want to ask him about that hit on perfect,
about Sam Donald and if they if they're rooting for
the Jags because they want another shot at the Jacks.
Get to that after we get to game time. This
is game time on the Dog Got Leave Show byre

(37:13):
uh Dan buy Er. What do you have for me,
my friend? The game today is real news fake news.
By the way, John rolmost did have a dog and
a cat at one time, just like you, Doug. But
now we're just down to the dog. Wait, what happened
to they cat? John? He was eaten by another dog? Yeah,
by a dog? Wait wait, wait, by like a coyote.

(37:37):
No no, the dog german shepherd got out and cornered
him and cornered wait wait killed him? Or ate him? No,
killed him? I shouldn't say ate him, but yeah, killed
a dog killing What kind of killer dog is this?
I don't know. The lady gave us some money to
take care of the post problem. But how much money?

(37:58):
I was like two dollars she gave us. Oh, man,
he should have you should have called when those lawyers
here on radio. It was not a good thing. Man.
Pour a little liquor for kitty. What do you got
their damn buyer? Real? Oh boy, cat just died to fifty.

(38:27):
Let's not be ridiculous here Ramo's family. Two d is
good of real news are fake news? NFL TV numbers
for the seventeen season, we're down from the specta yeah.
Neilsen says they were down nine point seven per cent.
Nielsen says the average number of people watching a game

(38:48):
this season was about fourteen point nine million, down from
sixteen and a half in sixteen. I just have a
bad gage for this. I don't know anybody who doesn't
watch football is like, right, you know what? I know
there are people that's like in the country watches the
Super Bowl, like what are you doing? Like, what are
you doing? Well, it may not be a million people, Doug,
but red zone gets that's all people talk about on

(39:11):
You watch red zone, You watch red zone. Maybe that
has something to do with it as well well. You'd
have to You have to tell me how many people
have subscribed to red Zone. If the subscriptions are way up,
then that would explain it. I think. I think, honestly,
it's that there's there's just football on all the time,
NFL football on all the time, and it lacks the
importance in the regular season. I do think the postseason
numbers will be huge. Real news are fake news? Doug

(39:31):
Fans that ever Makefield and Jacksonville will be able to
eat teal colored ice cream and Hamburger buns during their
wild Guard game against the Bills. I read that the
other day. That is real news. They're real, and they're
Spectac Delaware North Is the stadium's food supplier, also will
be providing teal colored beer for fans at the game
on Sundy and they do green beer for like St.

(39:53):
Patrick's Day. I'd be more concerned with the teal colored buns, right,
because then you're like, oh, is there is that mold?
That colored buns? A real news? Are fake news? Ravens said.
Coach John Harball reportedly wants Chuck Pagano to be his
defensive coordinator. That's real, They're real. Yeah, we're out a
real kick the Baltimore Son said the Ravens want to

(40:13):
reunite with Pagano, who was the team's defensive coordinator before
taking the Colts job. John Harball even said today that
they are they want to bring in someone who was
interested or I should say, has been in their system. Yeah,
it's interesting that Rex didn't get the call because he
was a former defensive coordinator, successful one and a better
head coach. But maybe Rex is making too much money
in TV now to want to take that job. Finally, Doug,

(40:35):
real news are fake news. John Ramos has been selected
to coach the Southern California All Star Girls soccer team
for a tournament in Las Vegas in April. That that
was a lot of information, So I'm gonna say it's real.
I just I don't know his love, his qualifications. You
are fake. No, that's fake news. They don't want anywhere,
didn't want John anywhere near the All Star team. Is

(41:01):
game time? By the way, I do want to add,
John made a soccer team or a patch for Kitty
Boo this season during all of their matches. Wait when
did when did the cat get mauled? I would say
like March of so right before right before I joined
you guys just never came up. Hey, by the way,
take it easy on John. His cat just cat waten
by a German shepherd. We actually were kind of given

(41:23):
the directive by Suzanne to maybe not bring it up
as much as possible, but I figured it time, you know,
want by and Juju Smith Schuster joins us. We'll ask
him if he's ever had a dog that malda cat.
Next in the Doug Godlip Show, What Up Tug Golip Show,
Fox Sports Radio, coming to you from the City of Angels,

(41:44):
getting you ready for wild Card weekend to the Nashville
Football Lake. We're still reacting to a lot of stuff,
still reacting to thunder come to town? Does that mean
Paul George because the whooping, Like I don't want any
part of the Lakers. We'll talk about that also. I
think the big news actually also emanating from Southern California's
Donald and Rosen both to Claire within like fifteen minutes

(42:06):
of each other for the NFL Draft, Like, hey, who
would be a good guy to call on to know
about Sam Donald? Right? Because Donald is one of these guys,
like you know, he doesn't look maybe as refined in
the product? Is Rosen in the pocket? Is Rosen Man?
His team's kind of win more? Right, Buddies at USC
USC wins more than U. C l A. Who would

(42:27):
be a good guy? Who's played with with Donald? Who could? Hey?
How about Juju Smith? Schuster, of course, has had an
outstanding rookie season uh this year with the Pittsburgh Steelers,
won their division at fifty eight catches on the regular season,
averaging nearly sixteen yards to catch seven touchdowns, and he
joins us on the Doug Gottlip Show. Juju, how are you?

(42:51):
I'm doing great? How are you guys doing good? Man?
All right, so you have one season in the books,
although we got the postseason to play it as a
second season. Sixteen games. How's your body feel like? What's
Everybody says like, oh man, the beating of a What's now?
You've been through it? What's it like? Yeah? Man, I
would say that, you know, you have your ups and
down during the season. Um, I mean I missed a

(43:11):
couple of games due to injuries, but I mean I
feel great, you know, I feel you know, I'm excited.
I think the excitement of you know, being in the
playoffs and being able to go and get that number
seven is amazing. So my body is great and just
excited to get out there. Um. Obviously you're coming off
statistically an incredible game. Uh. Nine catches hundred forty three

(43:32):
yards and another touchdown in a win over the Browns.
What's that like to play in that game? Right? Like, look,
I think to the rest of us were like, wait,
Ben's not playing. A b is not playing. Obviously you're
still playing without Ryan Chase here, Levyan is not playing
for you. What was it like to play in a
game to which everybody outside of that football feels like, look,

(43:54):
ju do whatever you do, don't get hurt. What was
it like for you? Well? For me? Um, for the
wreck that was probably the most coldest game I ever
played in. Um Uh, but you know, the to have
the opportunity to step up and uh, you know, to
be the guy and you know, tell about the team
and you know, get the victory, you know, over the
Cleveland Browns. Uh. You know that's what I saw. And

(44:15):
that's not this that's not this game. That's every game,
you know. Uh. When when my team relies on me,
you just gotta make your plays. And that's what I do. Yeah. Plus,
you can't be the team the loser of the Browns,
right like, look, we just can't lose to the Yeah,
you can't be the one. Um. Okay, So, uh, knowing
who you play is important. Is it fair to say
that you guys want to play the Jacks? Is that?

(44:36):
Is that a crazy statement? I mean it's um right now.
I mean we don't have control of it. You know,
it's in goslind. You know, whatever happens happens. Um. If
you do, guess play against the Jacks, you know, it
gives another opportunity of the Bills do come out with
the w Congrats to them, and uh, we'll just see
how it plays out. Okay, let's let's talk about Sam Donald,
your former quarterback declared for the NFL Draft. Obviously he's

(44:58):
had a different season, uh since he lost essentially his
entire wide receiving corps up and down year. Let lose
three games this year, only lost three games last year,
although only two of which were before he started. You
guys won the Rose Bowl this year. They were beating
badly in the in the Fiesta Bowl. What are your
thoughts on Sam two years in the books at SC
and and how he um, how he will be as

(45:20):
a as a pro quarterback. I think Sam Donald is
a tremendous player. Uh. You know when I was there
with him and um, he stepped up huge for us,
you know, in the times that we needed. And uh,
I think his decision and him coming out, you know
that's on him. You know he's Uh, he's confident. I'm
very confident. I'm super excited. Uh if we're able to
get him to be a stiller if you don't, you know,

(45:42):
be great to pay against him. But um, I mean
what a great player and just a great person office
so too. Okay, So what is it? What is it
about him that where it feels like because like, look,
we watched Rosen, Like Rosen's more pocket passer. Rosen appears
to have a little bit a bit little bit more refined.
But Sam finds a way to win and make make
winning play. Like you've been in that huddle, you've been

(46:03):
watching film with him. What is it about him? I
mean it's just his laser focus. Um, in big situations,
in big games, you know where he can Uh. You
know when I was there in the Rose Bowl, we
were in the huddle and we were like he was
just like saying that, man, let's go down, you know,
win the game and go home and be with our family,
you know, spending like that, and that's what he did.
You know, he's able to you know, sit in the pocket,

(46:25):
be able to move outside of the pocket, make plays,
you know, on and run. He's able to run the ball,
get the first down for you. I mean, he can
do a lot. But like I said, I think, you know,
for him to come out this year, I'm super excited
to what he can do. You mentioned that this past
game against Cleveland Browns, with the coldest football game you've
ever played in, you had, you know, look, ten targets,
nine catches sort of didn't affect your ability to catch

(46:47):
the football as you had to step in to the
kind of the number one slot because because A B
is is out right now. But what is it? How
different is it for Southern California kid to play in
that type of cold in terms of preparing for playoff
football where the weather is going to be bad, beating
Pittsburgh or New England. What's what are the differences? What's
it like that's a huge difference. Um. I've taught myself,

(47:10):
you know, to adapt to it. And get used to
it and uh, you know, not shy away from the
the element of the game that we're playing. So for me, Um,
I just got you know, I just gotta suck it
up and just play it, you know, because you don't
want to be the guy who's like, oh, he's wearing
sleeves because you know he's afraid of the coat. I mean,
you gotta embrace it. I mean with the Pittsburgh Stilers. Uh,

(47:31):
this is what we're playing, this is this is what
we live in. Okay, So you can do the Shais here, right,
shas eers honor? You going shirtless and warm up? Is that?
Are you go? Are you going that bowld? No? Not not.
I'm not there yet. Give me a couple more years.
I'll get there. Juju Smith Schuster joining us here on
the dug Out Lip Show. Now you you took like
a bunch of random people to Jumanji? How did that

(47:53):
work out? Just just like any guy in the street, like, hey,
you want to go to see Jumanji? With man Um?
It was more know of you know, I took a
lot of you know, kids and uh, you know, elderly people,
you know, senior citizens, you know, just because you know,
I'm away from home. I don't have family here, so
you know, I missed my grandparents, I missed you, my

(48:14):
my little brother and sisters. I have five citists, two brothers.
And to have the opportunity to, you know, to get
back to the community and spend time, you know, with
these kids and the senior citizen, and to watch a movie.
I mean it was great. Okay. So so you get
what you get? Popcorn? Right right? I mean like when
you're you're you're sitting there, you're watching Jumanji, do you
always go popcorn? Yeah, popcorn, extra butter and a slurpee?

(48:38):
What color slurpie? Wait? Wait you're crazy? Wait but wait?
Did you go blue? A red slurpee? Wan? Blue surper? Okay? Um,
don't get you don't want to get your brain trees
that you gotta like pace yourself. Do you do? Do
you do the butter? Do you do like, hey, give
me some popcorn, then some butter, then some popcorn and
some butter. Or do you just want all the butter
at the top? Popcorn, butter, popcorn, butter. Very very solid

(48:58):
for a rookie. That's these are veto. Was that you
you pulled off? Um? I will tell you though that
that getting a dog no matter how could is Bougie right,
that's the name of the dog. Yep, you've got the
French bulldog Bougie. Everybody's seen it on on social media.
That's kind of a rook move though, right, because a
dog ends up taking over your whole life, Like, oh,
you want to go out now, then I gotta go
take out my dog and care for my dog. Like

(49:19):
that's like having a child. Yeah, man, And it's uh,
like I said, you know, being away from home, the
only kid on you know, on the East Coast and
I have no family here. Um, that's my that's my
right hand right there, you know, Bougie. You know, no
matter how I feel, I'll come home. He's always society always,
you know, joyful to see me. So, I mean that's
my guy. How's booge you doing on the on the house? Training? Man?

(49:40):
He's great, man. He has his own real grass in
the house. He's great training. He does he doesn't wine
and he's uh, he's a very good listener. Wait did
you get him like some real grass from Hinesfield? Is
that what he's Is that what he's playing on? Or
how do you how did you do real grass inside
the house? Man? This is company had does real grass?
You know they's an't to you, uh weekly And yeah, man,
the kids spoiled, but not high school. He'll be there

(50:02):
one day. That'd be big time, right, Like, listen, I
want a piece of that hinds that could be in
the next contract negotiation. Like listen, I want to resign here, Okay,
I want all the money that I deserved. And I'd
like like a four by four of hines Field cut
out and like it placed inside my apartment. And I
want to make sure we have the lights. Right. So wait,
so do you have like a lighting system to keep
the grass growing? Yeah? I mean it's actually next to

(50:26):
like my window, so when light sounds on it. Um,
I mean it's just that's how it works. All right, man,
we'll listen. I'm sure your car has seed heaters. I'm
a so cow dude. Two, I've lived on the East
coast in the Midwest that coal, there's nothing. It's one
thing to be called everybody. Oh that's now. Have you

(50:46):
ever have you slipped on the ice yet? Yes? Yeah.
It's a humiliating feeling, right, You feel just completely helpless.
You're like look I mean, I mean, I'm a world
class athlete, Okay, I can catch the ball on on
returns and avoid eleven freak athletic angry men, and yet
I can't simply walk to my car without falling down.
It's a humiliating feeling. That's what stuff I here. Man.

(51:09):
But I mean, once you get the hang of it,
you'd be fine. Look, enjoy your weekend off. Can't wait
to see you back on the field with the black
and yellow. Thanks for joining us to Ju, Thank you,

jobs over a hundred specially tools have to get the
job done right, Depasseit required getting the zone Auto Zone.
That's it. It's it's that. That's my my lowest moment
I can ever recall when I was at Notre Dame. Obviously,
when I left Notre Dame, that was a pretty low moment.
I just remember my first year in the real cold
that I was walking home from like study hall one

(51:51):
day and I had, like, you know, my park on
and I had a beanie on, my gloves on, I
had a scarf on, and I'm still cold. And then
I slip and fall in the ice and I'm just
laying there, and You're thinking I could die and no
one would know. They'd recover me in the spring, right,
I'd be covered up, I'd still be like frozen. It's
just such it. And and if you've lived in that

(52:13):
any part of the country that gets that cold, I'm
sure you've probably slipped in the ice. No one is
no one is immune to that. R J Bell from

us every week. R J, thanks so much for taking
some time. Um, all right, let's give me some some
statistical background since two thousand two in this playoff format
was instituted. Give me some of them, Give me some

(53:41):
of the numbers that could point to how your your
deductive reasoning. Yeah, this is pretty amazing. So if you
look at strength of schedule during the regular season, and
we use the Jeff Sagrin numbers from USA today, while
respected is the team with the better strength of schedule,
that's it coming into the first round of the playoffs.
And this is only the first round. Now forty one

(54:03):
and nineteen straight up against the spread and one against
the spread, So it's pretty amazing. There's two subsets that
are even more impressive. If the difference in strength of
schedule is ten or more slots, So one team's number
thirty two, one team's number ten, while it's more intense

(54:25):
slots boom. That's even more important in that case twenty
four and five straight up and one against the spread.
And this in the second step set is if the
team is an underdog, it's even a little better. Okay, So,
like I'm not crazy to think, uh I thought as
soon as I saw the schedule come out, Atlanta l

(54:47):
A Atlantis played a tough schedule. I know there was
some super Bowl hangover. I know that are on the road,
but I mean, and look, part of this isn't in
the numbers. This is just in the census. L A
has never been in the haven't been in the playoffs
on these has haven't seen success. Atlanta has been. There's
plenty of guys on this team have been the playffs
multiple times, let alone the good and the bad of
last year. It feels like the Rams are in for

(55:08):
a hell of a football game. Yeah, I love the
Falcons here. It's my best bet of the week. And
let's talk about it. From the perspective of strength of schedule.
You mentioned that Atlanta number four strength of schedule and
the Rams number seventeen, so it meets both criteria of
the subsets. It's more than ten slots and Atlanta is

(55:30):
getting six and a half points in this game. By
the way, just to give you an example, Doug of
how important strength of schedule is. If you look at
the top eleven teams in the NFL when it comes
to net yards per play, which is a stat wise, guys, love,
how many yards do you gain on offense every snap?
How many yards do you give up? What's that net number?
If you take the top eleven teams, only two of

(55:53):
them are in the top ten of strength of schedule,
meaning eight or nine of the eleven and teams are
out of the top ten, which means if you have
an easy schedule, you tend to do better yardage wise,
right every stop, and if you have a top schedule,
you tend to do worse. But here's what's fascinating. The

(56:14):
Saints are in the top ten strength of schedule and
their number one net yards for play and Atlanta is
tied for second in their number four strength of schedule.
So the only two teams that both have done great
statistically and have had a tough schedule, the Saints and
the Falcons. I think that says a lot. All right,
let's get to Kansas City, Tennessee. Tennessee appears if there's

(56:35):
if there's the weakest team in the playoffs, and I
know they have their starting quarterback unlike like the Philadelphi
Eagles will get to next week. I mean Tennessee. They've
They've given up more points than they've scored. They benefit
from the fact they dominated a bad division, a beat
up division in the Colts and and the Texans especially.
What am I missing here? I feel like can Kansas City,
though they've had a quarter century of ineptitude in the playoffs,

(56:58):
with the exception obviously being last year, when a game
I feel like this is an easy one, I'm all,
I'm I'm completely in on Kansas City in this particular game.
How about you? I agree, though, Lane nine. I don't
love to lay nine, so it's just a lean for me. Now.
I don't do to hot takes because I bet cold
cash on my opinion that phrase of mine, duck. But

(57:21):
I have a hot take. I think I think Kansas
City right now is playing better than they played when
they were five and oh to start the season. Thoughts, Um,
I'm you know, I think having having seen their football
life flash before their eyes, sure, I mean, I guess
the problem with it is there's still no Eric Barry.
That's not changing, and I do think that will eventually

(57:42):
will get exposed. It makes them different than when they
took out New England. But I have no problem with that.
Right they've kind of rediscovered their running game. Um, you know,
I think Alex Smith has seen postseason success, maybe not
against Pittsburgh, and like, look, if they win and Jacksonville wins,
they're gonna get a shot in New England, who they
played before. I don't think that's that's crazy talk. I
think seeing some adversity and finding way through adversity, I

(58:05):
think it's a very good thing, a very healthy thing.
And I also think if you look at the stats,
even when they were five and out to start the year,
the Chiefs were number twenty six on defense, They've been
top ten on defense the last five weeks or so.
And remember this change of offense isn't just kind of
an arbitrary beginning of our the stats we want to
look at recently, but rather Andy Reid gave up the

(58:28):
play calling duties, and when he gave it to the
o C they've averaged over thirty points a game since,
So it's a it's a lean, not a tick yes
and one quick thing. Conceptually, I'm more inclined to lay
over a touchdown in the playoffs, which seems counterintuitive because
you're thinking, well, they're playing better teams. But one of
the reasons I love big underdogs in the regular season

(58:50):
is the favor is often times a little bit flat.
It's a chance for them to not be at a
fever pitch throughout a long NFL season and playoffs they're
gonna be at a fever pitch no matter what. That's
the bigger favorites tend to do better than they do
during the regular season. Saints hosting the Carolina Panthers. I
just saw you tweet out a number about Cam Newton

(59:12):
in his passing yards. What was it is? This is
pretty amazing. Last nine games for the Panthers, Cam Newton
has thrown for over a hundred and eighty five yards
a hundred and eighty five only twice. It's crazy. D
eighty five is not a high bar. That says not
like you said, well, he hasn't done for three hundred
yards in a game. Hundred eighty five yards is a

(59:34):
very menial stat. I mean, this is like the old
Archie Manning Terry Bradshaw years. They were thrown for two
forty a game, right, So I mean, yeah, this is
this is a different era type team, especially with Cam
running the ball so much because he's been their leading Russia.
I don't have the exact stats, but in an inordinate
number of games recently, so I mean, with with that

(59:56):
in mind, I mean that that makes the pick kind
of easy, doesn't it? The answer? At home, they're very
good home team, right, very good even against the spread
at home. Um, is there anything that that leads me
to think that you should you should take Carolina. It's
it's because the number is so expensive, it's seven, and
I actually lean Carolina. Now, first, let's give credit where

(01:00:17):
credits due with the Saints. When they're at home and
they have a winning record at the time of the game. Now,
why does that matter? Because it means the crowd is enthused,
and in a dome, the crowd really matters when it
comes to home field advantage. Got it. In that spot?
The Saints are nineteen four and one against the spread,
So I'm not gonna bet Carolina. Here's why they're getting seven,

(01:00:39):
and the Saints weakness on defense and the d's a
little thinned out by injury is against the run is
If you look at d v o A, which is
an advanced Saber Metrics staff people respect against the past,
the Saints are number five against the run, number twenty three,
So I think this might be a grind him out game.
If it ends up being lower scoring, that means plus

(01:01:01):
seven looks mighty good. Alright, what about the Jacksonville big
number nine point favorite over the Buffalo Bills. Here's another
not hot take. Jacksonville, if up by ten points or more,
is one of the three best teams in the NFL.
If Jacksonville is down by ten points or more, there
in the bottom half of the NFL. Most teams, like
the Patriots, probably top three if they're up by ten,

(01:01:24):
top three if they're down by ten. Most teams are
gonna be pretty similar. I think Jacksonville is night and
day if they're winning or losing significantly. Does that make
sense to you? It does it? Because you know there's
no faith in Blake Border's ability to bring you back.
They're just not built for that. They're built to get
the lead and and they have their defense pin their
years back and get after the past. Right. That's how
they're run the football short in the game exactly. I

(01:01:46):
think that when you have to throw against Jacksonville, Jacksonville
might be the best past defense in the last five
years in the NFL. They're that good. And thus, I
think it's counterintuitive they think with the running team, you
want to lay the lumber the big number. But I
actually think Jacksonville will grind you out if they get ahead.
And I think McCoy being you know, shaky health wise

(01:02:08):
if he plays or not, is huge. We believe that
McCoy is one of the most if not most valuable
running backs of the last decade, the reason being he's
mighty good. Yeah, but the backups are so poor and
the reliance of the Bills running the ball is so high.
McCoy is so important, and whatever happens, he's gonna be

(01:02:31):
far less than it seems. Alright, let's get to Monday's game.
R J bel joined his pregame dot com. Straight at
Vegas is the radio show Friday nights Saturday nights here
on Fox Sports Radio. Follow him on Twitter at r
J in Vegas. This is the Doug Gotlib Show. Um,
Alabama's the three and a half point favorite over Georgia.
We know the outstanding records of the record of Nick
Saban's never lost to a former assistant. It's played in

(01:02:52):
both teams home away from home in Atlantis. There's no
real home field advantage. UM Bama is the favorite. They're
almost always is the favorite. Who's your lean? Let's talk
on and feel real quick. I actually think Georgia has
a little home field because I think the crowd is
gonna be more Georgia. But I here's the funny thing
that Georgia team has never played in this venue, but

(01:03:14):
Obama hat, so I think it mitigates it a little bit.
As you said, here's the statu of maybe the year
is if you go back to two thousand nine the
SEC Championship game. Since then, and there's a quarterback that
was playing against Bama from Florida you might remember, is
since then, there's been a hundred and eleven games for Alabama.

(01:03:36):
They've been an underdog one time since December of two
thousand nine. That's that's insane. They've been favored a hundred
ten out of a hundred and eleven games. I actually
lean Georgia here. And here's why is Jennings is out
there linebacker. Now they're down to net linebackers already Obama,
so now you're at since the midpoint of the year.

(01:03:58):
So now you're taking away probably their best defender, if
not one of the best. And I think that allows
Georgia maybe to run a little bit here. So I'm
not gonna beat Georgia cause Saban is so good with
his assistance. And I think whenever you're familiar with an opponent,
whoever the better coaches has the advantage because you can say, well,
George is familiar with Alabama, but obviously Saban is the

(01:04:20):
better coach. That keeps me off the game. But I
lean Georgia plus three and a half. All right, that's
r J Bell. Check out his show Straight out of Vegas.

Auto Zone give you my thoughts on the story out
of Denver as to who the Denver Broncos will pursue

(01:05:03):
are likely to pursue for the quarterback position. That after
we get to Dan Buyer find out what else is
going on the world of sports. Yeah, you can touch
on that. We'll talk about the teams that have games
coming up on Saturday and Sunday, specifically the Tennessee Titans.
They are not going to have to Marco Murray for
their matchup against the Chiefs out because of that Nie Sprain.
While the Bills and Jaguars play on Sunday. As you
and r J were talking about, Bills running back Lashawn

(01:05:25):
McCoy's status still up in the air. Didn't practice today,
but head coach Sean McDermott did say McCoy is heading
in the right direction with his ankle injury. The NFL
Network says the Jaguars expect to have wide receiver Marquise
Lee back from his ankle issue. NFL TV numbers for
the seventeen season, we're down almost a ten percent from
sixteen according to Nielsen nine point seven percent to be exact,

(01:05:47):
as the ratings last year dropped from eight percent. In
college football, l s USUN defensive coordinator Dave Randa to
a four year contract where ten million dollars, making him
the first college football assistant to make more than two
million dollars per season. And a couple of quick notes here.
No Kevin Durant tonight for the Warriors out against the Rockets.
Tiger Woods is gonna play in the Farmer's Insurance Open

(01:06:09):
and Genesis Open. No Australian Open for Andy Murray and
the Dodgers made an official Doug. Mark Pryor will be
the team's bullpend coach after spending the last four years
with the Pontres organization. Wow, Mark Pryor, Mark Pryor. Hey,
here's something about Mark Pryor. Um Do you remember how
he first got remember? Like, Mark Pryor, you talking about
your all time backfire Sports Illustrated jinks? Do you remember

(01:06:32):
Mark Pryor was was on the cover of Sports Illustrated
because supposedly he had a UM emotion that was, uh,
it was like the perfect throwing motion. Do you do
you remember that at all? Early on? But I remember, um,
I remember a Sports illustrated but I'm not sure what
it was all about. Do you do you remember how
he first hurt his arm? No, No, Ramos, you want

(01:06:55):
to venture a guest. You remember Mark Pryor was Uh,
they had prior in wood and that is gonna be
the foundation of of the resurgence of the of the
Chicago Cubs. I don't remember how he was in a run.
It was in a rundown. It's actually in a rundown.
His arm kind of got caught try and tag out
a player in a rundown. That's how he originally hurt

(01:07:18):
his arm. So Mark Pryor going to be the bullpen
would you say? Do you say bullpen coach? A pitching coach.
Coach cuts back? Is the pitching coach who has done
an amazing job? What what does the bullpen coach do?
He's like the assistant pitching page. He's like the one
who answers that's an honest question, right, Like the first basement.

(01:07:42):
The difference in first base coach and third base coach.
Like first base coach like at a baby, out a
baby out of baby. Ye, let me take those gloves
all right, out a baby out about it? All right?
I want you to look over. I want you to
look across the diamond, because that's the guy with all
the important information. Me. I'm the back back back back
back back back back back by right. That's all you
do over at first base is you tell the guy
to take a lead, alright, get back, take a lead, alright,

(01:08:06):
get back. What does the bullpen coach answers the phone, Yeah,
I think so. Hey, so let's get some guys warmed up.
All right, you you you're up. I don't know why
you're up. I'm just I just answered the phone. Around here,
I know it's like the assistant pitching coach, right, who's
the assistant manager? But look, I like Mark Pryor a

(01:08:27):
great deal. Uh. It stinks that his kind of career
fell apart because of that that elbow, those series of
army issues. But I remember everybody's like, well, you know,
his his motion isn't like now he first hurt his arm.
I believe in a rundown. In a rundown. Um. So look,
everyone I think in football knows the Broncos need a
quarterback like that is not a surprise, like maybe even

(01:08:49):
more so than Cleveland. Like Cleveland, like man, they got
a couple of young guys are not terrible. I mean,
I think Cleveland's gonna take a quarterback, but Cleveland is
also not already made team, right, like taking a quarterback
they need, But the expectations are the Broncos have had
a good defense, They're just a quarterback away from being
competitive atop that division would be the thought decent running game,

(01:09:13):
talented at least namewise, and at some point they got
to get this thing right. What's I think most interesting
is there's this report out of Denver that says they're
not going to look into Eli Manning. Instead, they're more
interested in Kirk Cousins. Now, they obviously have to throw
money at the problem. Um, you draft a quarterback, you

(01:09:36):
drafted actually two quarterbacks and Broncos while it was also
a draft pick, he was the heir apparent, and like,
let's let's not be fooled by the fact that the
Texans throw a bunch of money at Brock. It was
a million dollars more than the Broncos through at Brock.
So the Broncos thought brock Oss while it could play,
he couldn't. And um, obviously, you know you go into

(01:09:59):
the draft and uh, it's you know, pretty pretty telling
if you watched them play this year that they don't
think they have any They don't have any. They have
three quarterbacks and none of them are any good. But
Tony rank um says they don't have any interest in
Eli Manning. That's interesting. I don't have any interest in

(01:10:22):
Neili Manning. However, they are interested in Kirk Cousins. Paxton
Lynch hasn't been good enough, Trevor Simeon, who was kind
of they tried to find a late round. Fine, he
hadn't been good enough. Brock Wass. While they're not good enough.
The trio combined to rank in the league in yards
per temptty one and already first in past passer rating,
and they complete less than their passes. Tony rank worked

(01:10:46):
for ABC seven in Denver, and he believes that the
the object of the affections of John Elway is none
other than Kirk Cousins. And then there was this kind
weird do we have that cool cut from yesterday guys
where um, yeah, there was there was this cut yesterday

(01:11:08):
where Jake Gruden was asked about Kirk Cousins, and it
wasn't exactly iffuse in praise. Now, remember, kirk Cousins has
gotten paid over twenty million dollars each of the past
two years as a franchise TAGGI and he is a
free agent. They could franchise tag him again, but there
is a certain amount of recruitment you would expect. I

(01:11:30):
want you to listen to what j Gruden says and
you tell me if you if it sounds like he
wants he wants kirk Cousins to be his quarterback next year.
When you're seven and nine, it's hard to say, Wow,
this guy really was outstanding. Kerk had his flashes where
he's really good from a consistent standpoint over the course
of sixteen games. You know, we're seven and nine. Um,

(01:11:50):
he did some great thanks through for over four thousand
yards and twenty nine touchdowns. I believe, so, you know,
I think he's very, very good quarterback without a doubt.
But as far as getting us over the hump from
seven and nine, who went in division with all the
injuries we had, I think he competed and did some
good things. Yeah, I mean, that's where you're trying to
put lipstick on a pig. But you're like, look, we're
still seven and nine, which again I think is I

(01:12:11):
think Jake Gruden is realistic. There is a there is
an honesty to it. But when you have a guy
who are free agent and is going to have opportunities elsewhere, like,
do you have to be that honest? Couldn't you say
Kirk Cousins is not the problem here. We'd like him
to be our quarterback forever. And and there has there
are stories that Jake Gruden wants along to know the

(01:12:31):
long term solution, right, And I'm sure some of this
is him and Bruce Bruce Allen and and Kirk Cousins
camp kind of in the middle. He's in the middle like, look,
you two sides figured out who my quarterback is. And
I can and I can understand it. But you one
would think if Kirk Cousins is the long term solution
in d C, that's what should come out of his mouth.

(01:12:56):
Kirk Cousins threw for over four thousand yards, He did
some great things. Are failures are not his failures? Can
he get better? Sure? But Kirk Cousins should be our
starting quarterback for you for the next decade, at at
at least right, that's what you say if you're recruiting
a guy to play for you. If not, you're kind
of honest. You're kind of honest when you love a

(01:14:47):
say about Jon Gruden likely becoming the head coach of
the Raiders. Generally can see a disaster coming. Just say
this out loud with John Gruten. The poorest NFL owner
and team is the Raiders. They are not Jacksonville. This
is the poorest owner. His net worth is totally the Raiders.
He's gonna pay the most for a coach. It's a

(01:15:09):
lame duck franchise and the coach hasn't coached in nine years.
Does that sound like it's gonna be Belichick New England.
Most whiffs, most disasters, most failures. Just say, I'm out loud,
think about the last NFL disaster. I'm not talking failure,
I'm talking disaster. Forty Niners. Let's get rid of a

(01:15:31):
head coach that got us to a super Bowl, that
took over a six and ten team and we were
thirteen and three in one year, and let's replace him
with a guy who wears a track suit who's never
been a coordinator, Jim tom Sula. The problem with the
Jim tom Sula thing was Jim town Sula didn't sound,
the park, didn't look, the park didn't have the resume

(01:15:52):
for the part. So like, if you just say it
out loud, a super Bowl winning head coach, a super
Bowl winning head coach who has been an elite and
invested broadcaster over the last nine years, comes back to
coach a place where he saw the last. He was

(01:16:14):
the architect or one of the architects behind the last
sustained success. It's a little bit different than Jim Thomasoula,
isn't it. I mean, look, I get it. We all
want to pick on the Raiders. Okay, that's fine, we
wanted or we maybe we we, but but the Raiders
this thing actually makes total sense. I mean, like, look,

(01:16:34):
John Gruden was lusted after, not by fans but by
everybody in football. It wasn't because he said something greater,
he says, only he was Tony Romo, who was like,
oh he really does know football. You know that that
had nothing to do with it. It had the fact
due the fact that he was completely invested in the sport.
You got the feeling he knew every recruit, he knew
every draft pick, he knew every position, he knew trends

(01:16:56):
in the game. He wasn't John Gordon's not a commentator.
John Madden actually was a commentator. There's lots of comment
There's lots of commentators out there. John Gruen was an
analyst whould analyze the game. Sure, he put loving touches
on it, because you you know, you never know who
you might coach or who you might run into. But
she never got the set like they had. They had, um,

(01:17:20):
what's his name, Ron Jaworski. They had Ron Jeworsky on
Monday Night Football. You guy remember that? Do you know
when they got rid of Ron Dworsky Because John Gruden
made Ron Jaworski's analysis looked like it was from the
nineteen sixties or seventies, as opposed to he was all
over everything. He wasn't correcting him, he was just outshining him.
John Gruden. John Gruden led the Raiders back to prominence

(01:17:43):
once there as are more talented, and he probably has
the best resume of anybody sitting out of coaching. Tell
me a coach who's out there who's accomplished more at
two sites then John Gruden, who's not currently head coach
in the league. And while it's not done often, Dick
fermil did it. He's pretty good. UM. I mean, I'm

(01:18:10):
this one kind of stuns me because I do think
there's always different levels of investment in the job of
being a football analyst. John Gruden, to me, always come
across a super invested overall in the sport and knowing
the personnel. I don't understand why he wouldn't Why why,
why why he wouldn't give them the best chance of

(01:18:30):
being a success. Um. Also here Shannon Sharp and Skip
Bayliss discussing Oklahoma star point guard Trey Young. You're gonna
be phenomenal, Skip. We've seen guys scored the basketball. We've
seen guys be able to assist the basketball. Skip, I've
never seen anything like this in my life. Now you
go back, maybe you can remember Pete Mayrobitch in college.

(01:18:52):
Now Pete could score the basketball, but Pete wasn't dishing
out of sist. Jason Kidd could assist the ball. There
have been guys that could assist. Magic Johnson was phenomenal.
Magic Johnson wouldn't scoring thirty points a night. This kid
has got five s great games with twenty five and ten.
When you can do multiple things, especially at the next level,
I like to skip for me. I like him better

(01:19:14):
than Alonso because Lanvo was never gonna be able to
score the ball like this kid. Well, look, the problem
is that he's smaller than alonzo Um. But I do
generally agree that as a he's a great shooter and
a very good ball handler, and uh he's he's a
good passer. I don't think he's Alonso as a pastor,
but everything else at the offensive end he does better.

(01:19:34):
And his style of play, it's all based upon the balls,
pick and roll. There are people that won't take you know,
that think he's too small, that he's too slow, that
he can guard, that this won't work at the next level.
There's a lot of Steph Curry in the naysayers and
the game that hasn't always fit. There's a lot of
Baker Mayfield and no one wants to miss on the
next stelf Curry and no one wants to miss on

(01:19:55):
the next Russell Wilson. It's gonna be a debate that
goes down. Look, he dominated to my almon Water last night.
They tried to design a defense to which they pick
him up with one even two guys every full court
and every half court possession, and they slowed him down
for a half. But he had ten and seventh a half,
which is not bad. That's not that's not bad for
me in a game. And uh, and then they annihilated
Oklahoma State in the second half. He's tremendous and the

(01:20:18):
there is a lot of Steph Curry to what he does,
but there's also a lot of Russell Wilson or you know,
I guess you'd say Baker Mayfield. That's what the Fox said. Uh,
Jeff Schwartz is gonna join the show up coming next right.
I heard Jeff Schwartz. He was guest hosted out kicked
the coverage going back last week. Of course, former offensive

(01:20:39):
lineman couple stops in the NFL. His brother plays for
the Chiefs. When get his thoughts in the Chiefs and
their resurgence, how much of that is the teams they
played against. How much of that is that? What they've
what they've kind of figured out. Um. I also want
to get his thoughts on Donald and Rosen and UM
and the idea that though Rosen does kind of looked

(01:21:00):
the part I'm not sure. I'm not sure that act plays.
And then what do you do if you're the Giants?
He played Jeff's last team was was the Giants. What
do you have you're the Giants. It's very easy to say, well,
like whoa, no big deal, you draft a quarterback to
replace Eli. But what if you draft Sae Kwon Barkley

(01:21:21):
Sa Kwan Barkley inside, Odell Beckham Jr. Outside, Even if
he's a crippled Eli Manning and they just get offensive lineman,
wouldn't they be automatically better? Fascinating? We'll talk to him
about that. If you miss Juju Smith Schuster or Bucky
Brooks or RJ. Bell or or any of of the

(01:21:42):
previous part of the Doug Gotlip Show, download the podcast,
will tweet it out, put it on Facebook, and you
can get it in iTunes Underdug Gotlip Show. But up next,
Donald versus Rosen. It really is as easy as where
they're from, and maybe that tells you where they're going to.
That's coming up next in the dug Oatlamp show, Fox

(01:22:03):
Sports Radio. What Up? It's a dug Gotta leave show?
What us dug Gotta leave show? Fox Sports Radio coming
from sunny southern California. If look, if you're stuff, ain't
stuck in a traffic jam because the weather, or you're
just stuck in your car, or you're listening to us
at home, Hey man, we've got great sports talk ready

(01:22:25):
for you every day three to six East during twelve
to three Pacific, cyclone bomb is upon the East coast.
Um Man, there's a lot to get to today. I
thought it was interesting that, you know, the thunder were
great last night, dominated the Lakers. There are people that believe, well,
that'll scare Paul George away from signing with the Lakers.
I don't know. I think if you watched last night,

(01:22:47):
it doesn't feel that way. Thunder a good, made a
bunch of shots, embarrassed, humiliated the young Lakers, but it's
really the older Lakers that should be a little bit
more humiliated. All Right, We got more on that to come.
Josh Rosen, Sam Donald both the clared for the draft.
You know, like, who's a great guy to call on
in terms of understanding what it takes to make in

(01:23:08):
the league, understanding that that position better than Jeff Schwartz.
Of course, former offensive lineman worked for sp Nation series
x M, and you might have heard him fill in
on Out Kicked the coverage to show that Clay Travis
hosts normally, he filled in all of last week. He
joins us on the Doug Gallup Show, Jeff, how are you?
I'm doing great. I'm in California for today only, and

(01:23:30):
it's what are the beautiful? I still bad for everyone's
cycling bomb. Yeah. You know what's what's crazy about it
is I was just outside during the break for a second,
and uh, it's probably one of the nicest days, like
he is. I mean, this is one of those days
to it. It's like the Rose Bowl normally is you know,
you're on the East Coast and you're like, Okay, I
I don't know if I can afford it, but I

(01:23:51):
got to live there. Um Okay, So it's it. But
it's a great It's a great jumping off point because
you have two quarterbacks both Southern California kids, very different
style of Southern California backgrounds, upbringings, etcetera. Go to two
different schools. They both declared within like fifteen minutes of
one another. Um and and they're gonna be always tied
to hip. And there are some thoughts they go one too,

(01:24:13):
with Cleveland drafting one, the Giants drafting too. What are
your thoughts that you've seen those quarterbacks more, what are
your thoughts on how they how they transition to the NFL? Well,
knowing Cleveland, they're gonna draft like Josh Allen or or
Baker Mayfield, Lamar Jackson, one of those three guys and
not these top two guys. You know. I think the
most ready to play now is Rosen. If you watch

(01:24:34):
him play, Uh, he does a great ball. He's very
actor on deep throws. I think he's one. The one
thing he doesn't do well. He doesn't take the easy throw.
When you watch him play, he's always trying to to
make the hard throw. That's somebody has to learn that
NFL look, it's okay to throw it to the back
of throw it to the guy for a seven yard
game to you know, keep the sticks moving. I think
he thought that you feel like he had to do
so much because their offensive line wasn't good. Um, the

(01:24:56):
running game, they're defense right, because he had to do
a lot. I think he's fellow you the a lot.
You know, darn Old at times looks amazing. We saw
a gift Ohio State. There's a couple of times where
he has the States, but still he has all the
tangibles as well. Um, so you know, I think a
lot of it does come to coaching as well. I
don't know. Josh Rosen talked about this, right, he gratherly
go to to some anywhere but Cleveland, Um, and that matters.

(01:25:17):
I mean, we've seen what Sean McVeigh did with Jared Goff.
So I think that the most ready guy right now
if you would walk in the facility who wanted to
play as Josh Rosen. But Donald's just as talented. Okay,
So so I think I think all of that is accurate.
On the other hand, one Cleveland does have actually a
guy who's you can I don't know if I don't
think Hugh Jackson should still be the head coach, but

(01:25:38):
he has had good success as kind of a quarterback
guru when he's had the right quarterback to work with right,
was good with Dalton, was was good, was very good,
Carson Palmer. Um anyway, Um, so I guess I guess
the question is the perception of Josh Rosen is he's smart,
and he knows he's smart, right, and when him just

(01:26:00):
the question becomes in a locker room fifty three alpha's
and there's not fifty three alphas. But you know what
I mean, how does his persona work? If he wins
football games? No one cares. I mean, that's what it
comes down to. If he can win football games, um,
no one cares. I think people might like his confidence. Um,
you know, if he has a little swagger to him
as he shows up to the first day, I think

(01:26:20):
people will enjoy that. But look, he's gonna back that
up right if he starts playing poorly, people are gonna
start talking about that as being a negative. I know
people talk about that now is being a negative, and
people talk about how he's you know, trying to get
himself out of Cleveland already as a negative. I won't
care with all that as long as you win. And
so I think it will play fine for a while.
But like he said, if he goes to Cleveland and

(01:26:41):
they go to and fourteen next year he plays really bad.
It's gonna where on people, uh, pretty badly. You know,
Darnald seems more down on the earth. He's talked about,
you know, it doesn't care where he gets drafted, when
he gets drafted. Um so, yeah, his personality it could
be an issue. But if he wins, it's not an issue.
All right. So let me put you in the seat
of the Giants, right in Dave Gentleman's uh freshly minted seat.

(01:27:05):
You also, you have the opportunity to hang on to
Eli Manning and draft of se Kwan Barkley st. Juan
Barkley running back. He got Odell Beckham Jr. And wide receiver.
Drafted a pretty good tight end last year. Right, Jerry's
did not butcher the tight end. You have all kinds
of other holes to fill on this team. They're gonna
get They're gonna jettison Eli Apple, some other defensive personnel
is going to be gone. I gotta fix that offensive line.

(01:27:27):
Do you spend it on a quarterback when you already
have a quarterback who's won two Super Bowls already? Spending
on a running back, well, that's a great question. I
think that's what Gentleman's gonna have to figure out, is
if he if he determines you like to play two
more years. Let's say let's say that he says, look,
we have Eli for two years, and the new head
coaches brought in he agrees with that assessment. Um, and

(01:27:47):
they think Eli has two years, and he doesn't grade
Rosen or Darno or you know, any of those quarterbacks
terribly hind he has s Jwon Barkley graded higher. Or look,
there's a left guard of Notre Dame. I know, no
one wants to hear about drafting a guard that high. Nelson,
He's a monster. He's gonna be an All Pro for years.
Think Zack Martin maybe a little bit nastier, a little
more physical. Um, you know, he should go through to Indianapolis,

(01:28:09):
but you know, Giants could use him as well. I
think they draft him at two. I think they would
draft Barkley or a drafted quarterback. But look, if it comes,
if it's determined that Eli has two years and they
have Barkley great as the highest player, and these quarterbacks
maybe not great, is so as high gentleman will take
the running back. But look, like you mentioned, they have
to fix their offensive line though, So if you draft
Barkley that high, you know you're you're out of right

(01:28:30):
tackle now you you cut him last week. You have
to frege in offensive lignement in their center and there
and their left guard Richberg and pew Eric Flowers and
left tackle may Or may not be back next year.
He's not gonna play left tackle next year. So you
have to build your entire offensive line. So it's drafting
a running back really a good thing when you can
draft a quarterback and keep him for one or two years,
buil the offensive lineup and have them ready to go.

(01:28:51):
And Eli retires and saying to get me fast in
to see um your brother Mitchell, of course is still
in Kansas City, a place you played for a year.
How they fix things? I mean, like they were so bad,
they were so good that they're so bad and then
they're better. Uh yeah, I think they have, you know
that middle stretch of the year. What happens to football teams? Um,

(01:29:12):
when when they're bad, when they're good, When they're good
teams but they play poorly, is a different unit takes
takes responsibility of losing the game. So you know one league,
it was the offense the Bills and the Giants. One
week he was the defense the Jets game. You know,
when the Raiders as well, Um, when they lost thirty
one to thirty, Um, it was a defense as well.
So now they just have finally come back to playing

(01:29:32):
team ball. Offensively, they didn't really lose it very much.
I mean, Alex Smith has had a career year four
thousand yards best deep pass the NFL. He's having the
best numbers of his career. Tyretail a thousand yards, Chelsea
a thousand yards, cream Hunt a thousand yards. Offensive lines
playing better defensively, they're rushing a passer again, the creating turnovers.
You know, everyone kind of ripped um Andy Reid for
for suspending Marcus Peters and not suspending Travis Chelsea for

(01:29:55):
some of the antiques he's done. But look it worked
because Pierce has played out of his mind back. Um,
so credit Indie Reach for that. I like the Chiefs,
of course. I mean, of course I'm gonna say that
with my brother there. But if you're looking for a
team in the a f C, that's not that the
Steelers are not the Patriots to win a Super Bowl yeah,
I think it's Kansas City. I look in Atlanta and
I think if I'm the Rams, who have very little

(01:30:17):
playoff experience on the entire roster, and the team I
probably don't want to play is the Falcons. Now. Look,
I know the Falcons are way better at home than
they are on the road. And I know that there
are some holes on that team. And look, they're built
to play in the Dome. They're built to get get
a lead, and and and user athleticism on the defensive
defensive line. But that feels like a tough matchup for

(01:30:38):
the Rams. Am I overselling it? Right? I think if
you look for an upset this weekend, the lines are
big right there, Steven their nine point lines, Um, it's
got to be Atlanta. Look, and when they can put
it together, and this has been their problem all you're
they're one of the most talentful teams in the NFL,
in the NFC Souths for sure, but they just haven't
put together right. Their offense just teams out of stinct
that they don't really time up their offense with their

(01:30:59):
runs of us as well, they have not found Clulio
Jones as often as they needed to. Defensively, they're very fast,
but they give up plays at times. So if I
was the Rams, especially if the Rams didn't play the
starters last week, which you know some coaches do, you know,
don't do andy. We didn't do it. Um, Doug Pearson
didn't do it. So they didn't do it. But you
Atlanta who had to get in last week with a victory.

(01:31:19):
They beat the Panthers. It wasn't pretty, but they beat
a good division opponent who was also a playoff team.
So we're just gonna feel good, you know. They just
they have to deal with Aaron Donald. Gotta finally going
to block him. Um. But if they can, if they
can stop the Rams running game, they have a chance.
But that team, you know, look to Atlanta for an upset.
If you want to pick one team to win this weekend. Um, Okay.

(01:31:42):
I see the Buffalo Bills, and I love that they
got in. But they're taking on the Jaguars, who, uh,
the game will probably move pretty quick because both teams
are gonna run the football. Shady's not healthy. I don't
love Tyrod against that defense. You know, I feel like
I feel like we're on that collision course in the
of C for Jacksonville rematch against the team they've beating

(01:32:02):
Steelers in Kansas City on the collision course for rematch
against team they beat in Pittsburgh in New England? Am
I wrong? Well? Think about this. Jacksonville is what nine
point favorite against Buffalo. I mean, like, like that's that's
a huge spread for wild card game, especially for Jacksonville
hasn't played well the last two weeks. If you look
at Buffalo, they don't do anything particularly well. I mean
they run the ball well, I guess. I mean they're

(01:32:24):
top ten rushing attack, but like you said, they might
not have shady this weekend. Uh. You know, if the
Bills get down by ten to fourteen points, they're done.
I mean Jacksonville's sort of sort of the same way.
I mean, honestly, if they get down by ten or
fourteen points, do you trust portals to bring your team back? Probably? Not.
But the Bills are the worst statistical team out of
any team who's who's in the playoffs. I mean they

(01:32:45):
they great story. I love watching the videos Kyle Williams
breaking down the locker room. You know, their fans out
in Missouri degree temperature and welcome to team back. Great story.
I loved it, but I don't think they have much
of a chance that they're just not that good this year.
Agree with you, and I don't think anybody would disagree
with you. I could probably say the same thing about
the Titans. But but but it's easier because we're we're

(01:33:07):
talking and look both a FC teams. Uh. Jeff Jeff
Schwartz fam on Twitter at Jeff Schwartz for his disrespectful
blocks of the week. It's one of my favorite parts
of the week. Jeff, thanks so much for joining us.
Take sure thank you guys. Pleasure is mind this season.
Make tough jobs easier with the free loan a tool
program from Auto Zone from a C and engine repaired
to exhaust and break jobs are over a hundred specialty tools.

(01:33:30):
They help you get the job done right to posit
required getting the zone Auto Zone. Eagles defensive end Brandon
Graham joins the show next. I'll ask him if he
thinks this defense can carry an offense which has not
been hitting at all. Forget any cylinders since Carson Wentz
went down. That's up coming next. Doug Otlap Show rolls
on Fox Sports Radio. This is gonna be weird, right

(01:33:54):
like you get into a rhythm of things, right. Everybody
gets into kind of rhythm with things with work, and
I like the are you think about the rhythm of
your job at work? Right? You get up and you
always most people drive the same route, you stop at
the same coffee place. Um, you know, like you go
to the same couple of places for lunch, whatever. Your
timing is kind of always the same. I'm just wondering
if being off for a week at this point of

(01:34:16):
the year, it's a good thing, but if it throws
off the rhythm. On the other hand, there is part
of part of the Eagles probably needs a bit of
a reset. Um, let's catch up with Brandon Graham, super
super talented, part of that incredible defense that of course
has the number one seed in the NFC. So they're
off this week. They're gonna be football fans like the
rest of us while going to and from work. Course

(01:34:38):
some he's got team Graham will get to in a second.
Brandon Graham of the Eagles joins us on the Doug
Gotlip Show. Brandon, how are you, oh man, I'm doing good,
doing really good. This guy home. They they is complete,
you know, getting ready for whoever we played next week. Okay,
so what's this like in terms of your rhythm? Right?
The idea that everybody likes a week off, but you

(01:35:00):
don't want to ruin the rhythm. And you guys didn't
play last week and see well last week, and so
do you want to do you want to kind of
restart it and play this week? How does this disrupt
or help the rhythm of the Philadelphi Eagles. I think
the biggest thing, uh, what helps us is, uh, we
get our bodies back, we get uh, we get healthy,
healthy earth. Uh. And then uh, on top of that

(01:35:20):
with us, uh this week, we've been doing a lot,
We've been practicing already, trying to keep that chemistry going,
keeping that fire of the grind. And I think, um,
you know, I don't really look at it as too
many negatives with a week off. I just think, uh,
with us not knowing our opponent, we we don't get
a jump, but overall we can kind of, you know,

(01:35:41):
kind of work on a couple couple of different teams,
Like we got Falcons if they win, and you gotta
thanks you you got the do you got the Panthers,
but you gotta just you know, just kind of take
it as it is, But you gotta work on yourself.
And that's that's what we've been doing, working on our
technique and making sure we stay found. Look, man, I mean,
I'm not gonna put words in your mouth. I mean
it's but the offense has been struggling. You'll lose with

(01:36:05):
some people deemed to be the m v P of
the NFL, and there's gonna be a drop off. And
and Nick Foles hasn't been great and not only threw
the four touchdown past the first week out there, but
last couple of weeks he's been struggling. Does that change
the defense's approach? Do you guys, you know, does it?
Does it mean that you guys have to, you know,
try and create more turnovers, create more havo. Does that
change how you guys play because the offense isn't what

(01:36:27):
it was a couple of weeks ago. Well, we always
had that mindset to go out there and you don't
matter if we get three points. We don't let them score.
We don't let them, but we don't let them get
in they don't win. And that's our mindset every week.
And I think, uh, we just played well together. All
we gotta do is is taking one play at a
time and talk about, you know, why are we here, like,

(01:36:48):
you know why in that moment. In those moments, we
gotta always remind yourself that it's one one player not
doing their job that's who cost us the game, you know,
and got to make sure that we all doing our
job the best we can. And we always gotta keep
reminding each other. And I think we've been doing a
great job of that, and our mindset won't change, not

(01:37:09):
just because the offense been struggling all we access, you know,
the offense just you know, just do just just just
do what they do, and we're gonna go out there
and put them in the best situation possible. How does
this defense become this kind of juggernaut? I mean, I
know coach coach Schwartz has had He's had good defense
before as a de coordinator and as a head coach.
But it seems like something's changed with this group. Um,

(01:37:32):
I don't know if it's any more than coaching, what
is it. I think it's a lot of guys. As
a year two of this defense, a lot of like
a lot of guys came from Buffalo too. Uh, that
was with them like Nigel Bradham, who's having a great year. Um,
I mean you got second year with all of us
like McLeod u. Uh thankins. We didn't really lose too

(01:37:52):
many guys other than on the outside we gotta cut.
We got some blue guys on a corner, but overall
the front seven in here you gotta added audition with
Chris Loan who's has been great this year. Uh, Derek
Barnett who who we drafted this year? Who fits well?
And what what what the scheme is? And you know,
we just got a lot of guys a year two

(01:38:13):
that made that jump, and you know it's just the
chemistry is is good. We got a good, a good
core of guys that's been through the process already. So
year two, the year two jump was great, especially for
Carson Wentz and a lot of guys on our team. UM. Alright,
so look you have you on football camp, don't you
in Detroit? How How does how does Team Graham work

(01:38:34):
in Detroit with this football camp? Um? Well, you know
every year we we hosted uh select one hundred camp
uh in Michigan and we what we do is we
invite a hundred boys and a hundred girls to our
camp and we want to add the girl component because uh,
you know, me and my wife was talking and you know,
we wanted to do something different, be different, and um

(01:38:56):
we added girls because mostly girls come and cheer on
the others. But uh, we we have stuff for him
to do. Every year, we always try to do something different.
One year we did battallet. Uh. Last year we did
a self defense classes. Uh, we do a lot of yoga.
One year we introduced them to a lot of different
things on the girls part of it that they really

(01:39:19):
don't get a lot of exposure to. And then obviously
we do the football football stuff with with the boys.
And but we talked to him as a whole, and
I think the message is working as a team. We
always talked about teamwork and you know, we need you
need everybody in the team and um, you know, don't
leave your buddy behind. And uh that's kind of been

(01:39:39):
you know what we've been promoting. And um, you can
go on team ground fifty five dot com if you
want to, if you're interested in on what what's to
come and up and coming for us? What would it
mean to you to be getting the Super Bowl? Oh
man didn't means so much to get to the super Bowl.
I mean I never won a championship, never got to
that last even I've never even got to the last dance,

(01:40:00):
you know, to be able to say win our loose.
So to get there and and to win this year
would be something great for my family and UM, for
for for all of us um here in Philadelphia, because
I know really hasn't hasn't won one, and you know,
for us man not to be able to bring that
to him who's in a time like this, I would, man,

(01:40:21):
that will be the best best thing ever. All Right,
you are a Michigan man. You didn't play for Jim Harbaugh.
I just kind of wanted your your thoughts a kind
of a devastating uh come from a head loss for Michigan. UM,
go from ten wins, ten wins, eight wins, what's your thoughts?
And a guy who played in that program and starting
that program, what's going on with h with Big Blue football?

(01:40:44):
We're heading in the right directional he needs his leader,
his his quarterback. But UM, watching these games, unless you
it always put st up back in perspective on you can't,
you can't. You always gotta take care of those little
things like, you know, I thought this last game, you know,
the turnovers was kind of casually the beginning, and then
we started straining when things got a little tight, and

(01:41:07):
then that's when more turnovers came. But I know Hardball
is doing a great job up there. I love what
he's done with the program, turned it all the way around.
And uh, I think once you find that leader as
far as the quarterback situation, everything will be good because
our defense playing lights out and it's only so long
before people start to make plays on them. Uh. But
you know, the offense, it's just it's a bunch of uh,

(01:41:29):
it's just a lead. We just need to find our leader.
And I think the hard balls right there and we
just need to give it one more year. Honestly, I
tend to agree with you. I know there's lots of
people I'm like, look if if Shane Patterson from can play,
or if Caffrey's little boy can play, Like, let's I don't.
I'm not even a Michigan fan. I just you. All
you do is watch the games go if they had

(01:41:51):
a quarterback, but that's a that that that's a big
that's a big if. That's a big if and that's
what and that's what even right about that? And then
we got Tree Black. We got a bunch of skill
guys at the at the receiver position that's coming back.
Hopefully Patterson is the guy that's going to feel that
void until you really get that experience guy to come in. Uh,
if we don't already have them to gain that experience

(01:42:13):
and the leave Michigan. No, the way I know hard
War can do it all right, Brandon, listen, there's good
stuff you're doing with Team Graham again. Follow on Twitter
at Brandon Graham. Enjoy your enjoy your union wife, enjoy
that week off, and we look forward to seeing you
whoever you play next week. Oh yeah, thank you, Brandon
Graham joining us on the Doug Gottlip Show. There is
a mutually beneficial relationship between Kevin Durant and Texas. Actually

(01:42:37):
in many ways you can see Texas continuing to benefit
from it. How much I will tell you upcoming the
first let's take you to Dan Buyer gets you an
update on what's going on. Well, there will be no
govern Durant Tonight's against the Houston Rockets. What we're used for.
We're gonna sit out because of a calf strand after
playing last night in Dallas. Of course, Houston, who's already
without James Harden because of his hamstring strain. Tiger, what's

(01:42:57):
this back? He'll be playing in the Farmer's Insurance Open
starting on January. That's at Tory Ponds. A couple of
weeks later, he's gonna tee it up at Riviera in
l A, playing at the Genesis Open. In the NFL
TV numbers for the twenty seventeen season down nine point
seven percent from twenty sixteen, according to Nielsen. The ratings
the year before dropped eight percent. Nielsen says the average

(01:43:18):
number of people watching a typical NFL game this season
was just under fifteen million, down from sixteen and a
half in sixteen. Bills running back Lashawn McCoy miss practice
again today because of an ankle injury. Head coach Sean
McDermott did say that McCoy is heading in the right direction.
Bills have the Jaguars on Sunday in an a f
C wild card matchup. On Saturday. In the a f

(01:43:40):
C wild Card game, the Titans won't have running back
to Marco Murray. He has been ruled out because of
a knie Strain Jets GM Mike mcagnan told the ESPN
New York he'd be open to trading up in the
draft to take a quarterback. Jets pick sixth overall in
the Springs Draft. And finally, ls U side defensive coordinator
David Randon to a four year, ten million dollar contract,
making him the first college football assist to make more

(01:44:00):
than two million dollars per season. Doug Ota Live Show,
Fox Board Trading. I don't know if you guys saw this,
but um uh, but Kevin Durant is giving what is
he giving? Who he's giving? Man? Is this right? Three

(01:44:21):
million dollars? Three million dollars to the University of Texas.
That's crazy, crazy money, especially considering there is a group
of I think maybe more so my brethren in the media,
and there are some fans that believe that that it's
a it's not a beneficial relationship or not as beneficial
enough of a relationship for um, for for for players

(01:44:46):
in terms of their relationship with their university. UM. I
think it's fascinating because look, Adida signed a huge Nike deal,
and I would have to think that Kevin Rant is
at least part of the reason why he huge deal. Um,
Kevin Durant is synonymous with Texas and Texas basketball, maybe

(01:45:06):
even more so than maybe more so than than any
other college player didn't win a championship with Kevin Rent
There wasn't a huge financial windfall. But isn't it amazing
that there's this perception that UH players don't benefit that
much from playing in college or playing for schools. It's
the schools that benefit the most, and yet the players
turn around and give a ton of money. Look, I

(01:45:30):
believe it's mutually beneficial. Kevin Durant could have could have
gone anywhere. He choose to go to Texas. He does
have some huge games and he'll fear ever be known
as a Texas player. It gives him kind of a
home away from home and whenever he's done, plenty if
he wants to go get an education and go do
that as well. Um so I am. You know. Look,

(01:45:55):
I look at it and I think that as much
as there's this perception, schools are making billions and billions
of dollars on athletes. Well, if it's if it wasn't
that beneficial, why are so many players giving money back?
Because they understand, as they become adults and appreciate exactly
what they had, however long they spent on a college campus,

(01:46:15):
and what they could potentially go back to. UM. So
you know, three million dollars is and you can say, well,
it's a drop in the bucket, like, no, it ain't
three million dollars a lot of money. That's a lot
of money to anybody, k D or otherwise. Um. Look,

(01:46:36):
if you want to think that colleges make billions of
dollars off of the name of one player, I think
actually Kevin Durant would be the guy that you could
say they might have make big billions, make millions, like
they're forever synonymous with him forever. But you could also
sit there and say that it's given Kevin Rant enough
of a home. That's where he goes. And if he's

(01:46:57):
not trained in l A, he's trained at Texas. It's
a place you can always go back and get an education.
And yes, they're always synonymous with him, but he's always
also always synonymous with them. And I think that we
don't have we need to ask ourselves exactly exactly why
do college spans watch their college Did they watch it
because of the athletes? Yeah? But most of them actually

(01:47:19):
watch it because they're athletes that play for their school.
Their school. Um, ramas, did you watch any of the
Lakers thunder game last night? There was like it was
it was all Oklahoma basketball there for a while on
on the mother Ship. I think I turned it on
and the Lakers are already down by twenty points. It
was actually fairly close in the first half, and then

(01:47:41):
it got completely out of hand in the second half.
So that that's let a lot of people go like, well,
how why would Paul George go there? He would never
go there. They are so bad now, like you would
never ever go there. And that's just simply isn't the
case as I saw it. No, I mean, George can

(01:48:03):
tell us and sit there and and we can say, well,
he doesn't have any pressure on him. Is Russell Westbrooks team,
and he can simply kind of chill ax and stead
over there and to jump shots. UM. Oklahoma City placed
tonight in Los Angeles. If you watched last night, it
was a complete throttling one thirty three to six. If
it's possible for a thirty seven point game to be

(01:48:24):
worse than a thirty seven point game, that's what that
one felt like they outscored the Lakers. It was twenty
six all at the end of the first quarter. They
were up nineteen at the half. Uh and just I mean,
just like that, it got completely out of hand and
it felt way worse than that final score. But I'm

(01:48:46):
telling if you saw his pops and his mom sit
in courtside like we have made it, we have arrived.
And while you think, all right, well that's not that
huge a thing. That's not that big a thing, you
should have seen the look on his dad's face. And
there's this idea that people have in mind, well you
know you have to. I mean, even Russell Westbrook, our

(01:49:07):
our sales pitch is gonna be We're gonna win a championship. Well,
I don't think that team is winning a championship, and
I don't think it's actually that that great of a sale,
do now do? I think Russell was telling us the
complete truth that that's the only thing he's gonna say
is championship. You know, not really, but I do think
that's honestly the only possible thing that could keep Paul

(01:49:31):
George in an Oklahoma City Thunder uniform. Nothing else. The
Lakers are more as or more likely in the next
five years to compete for a championship. And and you said, well, no,
look at them this year. They're terrible right now. They are,
But the cars were terrible before they got Lebron. If

(01:49:53):
the Thunder lost their players, they would be terrible too.
I don't think last night did I don't think did anything.
But you got off the plane from Oklahoma City and
you get to play two days in l A and
your dad, mom said courside both sides like, why would
I do this once a year or twice a year
when I can do it every day out of the year.

(01:50:13):
You know, why would I eat steak one night a
week when, if I can afford it and I don't
get fat, I can eat steak every night of the week.
All right, Coming up next, We've got a bunch of
things to get to in the press, chemistry issues for
for a team that missed the playoffs in the NFL.

(01:50:36):
Here here's the question. Is it a team issue, front
office issue? Is it a player issue? Is it both?
We got issues, that's the thing. I know. Buyer's got issues,
ronmost got cat issues. Chemistry cat. Sorry, I had to
bring that back up. That's up coming next on The
Doug Gotlip Show Fox Sports Radio, Doug Gotlip Show, Fox

(01:50:58):
Sports Radio rolls on here a beautiful Thursday in southern
cal I'm sorry, I'm rubbing in in on you if

sorry about that. Well, listen, we'd like to conclude every show.

to hear anything of what you have missed Bucky Brooks
was great and his breakdown of Donald versus Rosen, any
of the other stuff from today, just download the Doug
Otlip Show podcast. I think you'll be rewarded from or

(01:51:40):
you can um uh you you know, you can ask.
You can send it to a friend like yo, man,
I was listening to the show and anyway, Doug Outlip
Show podcast. Without further ado, though, let's get to as
many topics as we can the world of sports that
when you click off this radio show and Steve Gorman
Sports comes on. You know what my opinion is on
the topics of the day. We call it the pre us.
All right, let's bring in Dan Buyer, Dan, what you

(01:52:02):
got for me? Doug quickly amazing on how that rose
in Donald's story, how they both broke within like fifteen
minutes of each other. It was, I mean, it was crazy.
It was just to see on how all of us
in Rosen and then boom Donald right after it. Do
you think they were like they were um uh do
you do you think that they were kind of privately
sitting around going like all right, you go first, you first,

(01:52:23):
you first. I think Donald's was done earlier and somebody
tipped off Rows and he's like, quick, send it out,
send it out now, And I think Rosan got the
head start on it. I don't know anyway, We'll get
to some football in a bit, but Warrior's not gonna
have Kevin Durant and I and they're showed on with
the Houston Rockets. Of course, the Rockets already playing without
James Harden. Durant points last night against Dallas, but we'll

(01:52:44):
sit out tonight because of a calf strain. I hate this.
I just do. It's like the I mean, and look
what this is. We had this last year right where
the NBA was like, I understand you guys don't want
to play back to back, so we're gonna lengthen lengthen
the schedule. Now all of a sudden, you play in
Dallas and you play in Houston, like this is a
Marquee game, this is a Thursday night, this is a

(01:53:06):
big game for the league, and you're not gonna play.
I'll take the calf strain as legitimate, um, but I
don't like it. I mean, I do feel like if
this is the NBA Playoffs, he'd be playing. Why can't
he be playing tonight? This doesn't make any This is
just again, this is a bad list is this is
part of what the commissioner said he was going to
crack down on. And it's hard to call somebody a

(01:53:26):
faker or a flopper a liar, especially when k D,
you know, we mentioned earlier than the show, given out
three million dollars to Texas UH that renamed two of
their basketball facilities after you have Do you do something
that kind of good works? Yeah? I just you know,
I I can't say a negative word about you, but
I don't like this. In a made for TV game,
Tiger Woods has announced he will play the Farmers Insured

(01:53:47):
It's Open starting on January. Tory Pines also says he's
playing at Riviera at the Genesis Open, which starts in
mid February. All Right, so last year you went and
walked the ropes and did the show from Farmers this year,
this year, I think you're going down as well, aren't you. Yeah,
it's good, right, So we're both gonna be there like
there's now now it's like a buzz to golf. I mean,

(01:54:08):
just look, you don't you I'm not. I didn't. I
wasn't married to Tiger, So I'm not mad at what
he I mean, like, am I disappointed? Yeah, but again
like he wasn't my spouse, so I'm not. I don't
find what he did as vile as other people. I
don't think it's a great thing. But we need him
in golf. We need him to be healthy, We needed
to be competitive, We needed to be a top that
leaderboard because for whatever reason, we all pay attention more

(01:54:31):
when Eldrick Tiger Woods is on a leaderboard. So I'm
excited of course. Uh you know when you start in
La Joya at the Farmer's Open, that was the site
of his last major win. His body was coming apart
of the seams, Rocko mediate extra day, torn A, c
l or Achilles, tendont to whatever I mean. He just
he was a mess and found a way. I'm excited

(01:54:52):
that we'll both be there to see Tiger play his
first UH professional round of this season in Lo. Yeah,
we'll be bringing the Doug Gotlip Show to you to
you their live I think the day before during the
pro am, So I don't know if Buyer's play you
playing with Tiger in the pro am. I don't think
I know he requested you. He was like, man, I
frankly liked it better when you know he was at

(01:55:14):
home and he's like texting, you know, Scott Shapiro, Don Martin, Sure,
I kind of really would like you to set it up.
So buyer my my nine iron from a hundred and
forty yards. I'm sure it's impressive. Um, let's get to
some football news. Former Redskins then and Chris Cooley sit
on his Washington d C radio show that Redskins said
coach J Gruden wants to know now of Kirk Cousins
is going to be there for the long term. I

(01:55:35):
went on to say that Gruden says he wants the
one year contracts to end. Yeah, I think everybody. I
think everybody's done with a one year contracts, right. I
think Cousins is done with it. I think the Redskins
are done with I think the coaching staff has done
with it. Um and And what's interesting is this is
the same head coach who yesterday we we we had
some sound we're gonna play for you. Yesterday we played

(01:55:56):
for played it for you earlier today in which you know,
Gruden wasn't exactly a fuse in his praise of Kirk Cousins.
So I don't know between the between Bruce Allen calling
him Kirch Cousins, between Jay Gruden not being afraid to
call out his quarterback after the season is over, and
now the a we want to know you with us,

(01:56:16):
you're not with us, when really this is everything has
been building to this. Every we gotta make a decision
game of chicken. You can as sign him long term,
offering the deal. The handwritings on the wall, He's not
gonna be there next year. There are other suit. This
is a this is a divorce that should have happened
a long time ago because the two sides were never
truly a fit. May not be the only issue in Washington,

(01:56:37):
as team chemistry seems to be a big deal. Washington
Post reporting that cornerback Josh Norman scheduled regularly, you know,
regular get togethers with his teammates, cards, movies and stuff,
and says that team chemistry broke down as players stopped
showing up to those events throughout the season. Yeah, you know,
it's it's it's always interesting that when Josh Norman, I
think he tried to do team building. But sometimes and

(01:56:59):
he may be right, he may be Hey, this is
just a sign the team chemistries and get or it
may be a sign that they don't like you. Right.
It's like, man, team chemistry is bad. These guys don't
like each like. No, no, we like each other. We
just don't like you. Um uh you know. Like look,
the the Caroline Panthers defense took a dip and then
has recovered nicely as opposed to the Washington Redskins have

(01:57:21):
kind of never been the same since they gave him
that big free agent deal. This has been the thing
for the Redskins um since you know, Dan Snyder has
owned the team, right go out and pick up high
price free agents, and that plan hasn't worked, So it
shouldn't surprise us. What what I'd love to know more
information about is from other guys, like other unnamed players,
is did they stop showing up because it was a

(01:57:42):
last season and who really cares about team building? That's
a possibility, right, like, sorry, dude, not doing your team
building thing like I got a family, Uh, you know,
no things. Did they stop doing it because, uh, there
wasn't good chemistry, or they stopped doing it because they
didn't like Josh Norman. It's it's possible that the supportion
of all three of those answers are all yes. Jets
GM Mike mccagnan told the ESPN New York that he'd

(01:58:04):
be open to trading up in the draft to take
a quarterback. Is the Jets right now slid it to
pick sixth overall? Yeah, that's the that That's that's where
we don't know about the Cleveland Browns. There's the assumption
that the Cleveland Browns have to take a quarterback, and
I think that's an accurate assumption. You know, there's a
there's fomo in Cleveland fear of missing out because they

(01:58:24):
missed out on the Carson Wentz is the Deshaun Watson's
the uh, the Jared Goffs of the world because they've
traded out those spots or or pick somebody else. Um,
you have this fear of missing out of the next
rade quarterback. But their GM has before he got the job,
talked about the fact he likes Baker Mayfield above others.
And do you it's a game of chicken. How much

(01:58:45):
are the Jets willing to pay in order to move
up either you know, five spots and go to two
or six spots and go to one in order to
draft one of those two quarterbacks that we do not
have the answer for. But I can tell you that
in most years it expensive to trade up those five spots,
and this year it will be prohibitively expensive because everybody

(01:59:06):
knows those top two guys are above the rest. LSU
defensive coordinator David Randa it's gonna get a new four year,
ten million dollar contract, making him the first FBS assistant
to make over two million dollars a year. That's pretty amazing.
I don't understand why there isn't. I think that's successive
for an assistant, but I don't understand why there hasn't
been a greater push for assistant coaches salaries until until recently. Um,

(01:59:32):
but like, look, we saw this. You go back when
must Champ was at Texas. Remember he was like the
I think he was the first defense coordinator to get
a million dollars and he was the head coaching waiting
and he just couldn't wait any longer, and then he
left and took the Florida job. That's essentially that means
he was offered a head coaching job and he said, look,
I like it here. I don't want to move from here.
I think there's further growth here. I want to win

(01:59:54):
an ASTI championship here. It was probably a decent job,
but it probably wasn't a good enough job to get
him to move and l s U I guess told
him like, hey, look, we think you're a head coach.
We're gonna pay you like a head coach, maybe not
like an SEC head coach. And if you stay, we'll
pay you commensurate with the salary you would have received
had you taken that other job. I think that's all
this is about. This is about free market, and the

(02:00:15):
market will bear with the market will bear. Um. So
the interesting thing is the defense wasn't great against Notre Dame,
and I don't and I don't know how much blame
or credit he gets for it, but this was This
is also what they've been able to do by hiring
a head coach who isn't making seven million dollars. They
have money hanging around and the coaches salaries are all

(02:00:35):
one pool. And so instead of rewarding uh at ords
Ron with more money, you award his assistant coaches defensive
coordin here who had so the I guess the question becomes,
what does that ors Aron do? Right? If this guy
is in charge of all the defense and the doors,
Aron is a former defensive line coach, like he just
he just says, go Tigers, go Tiggers, and uh, it's
a good day to be a Tiger. Like that's that's

(02:00:56):
what he gets paid. That's a that's a much better
job than anyone any of the rest of us have.
And that's the press. Doug Gotlip Show Fox Sports Radio.
All right, so listen um tomorrow, we'll get you ready
for for wild Card weekend. Um yeah, wild Card weekend,
little college shops, little m b A. And then also

(02:01:16):
we gotta get you ready for Monday nights national championship games.
So we'll do we'll do all of that. It will
be a lot of football, a lot of football. I'll
coming tomorrow again. Download the Doug Gotlip Show podcast iTunes,
Fox Sports, Trader dot com, Facebook, Twitter or whatever, uh
and we'll be coming to your live from Oregon tomorrow.
