Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. I hope you're having
(00:25):
a great day. Summer is here. It's a Friday. We
take nothing seriously on a Friday. Although although something big
happened last night in the world of sports. No, it
wasn't the Major League Baseball trade deadline, with the Twins
trading Ray essentially half of their roster. No, that wasn't it. No,
(00:46):
it wasn't Lebron James working out at what appeared to
be the Clippers facility. No, that's not it. No, it's
not even Micah Parsons and we'll get to him. And
you heard that update. It's not even Micah Parsons. No,
there was football on television last night. Charger football on
(01:07):
television last night. Jodyes Ol Charjosco has Gades on TV
last night, pretty pretty outstanding stuff. We got a lot
to get to. This is the Doug ott Leeb Show
here on Fox Sports Radio. Okay, I'll give you. I'm
gonna give you just a quick, really really really quick
(01:29):
thing on Trey Lance in fifteen minutes. Okay, Trey Lance
was outstanding last night. But it's really funny what happens
when a guy in a preseason game plays well and
we're like, oh, I hadn't thought of Trey Lance in
a long time. That's in fifteen minutes. In the meantime,
there's a report from Diana Rassini which is backed up
(01:51):
by Micah Parsons actually posting this himself that Micah Parsons
Cowboys relationship as the tiory to the point with a
star pass rusher is considering drastic measures, which include a
trade request or even a declaration that he is severing
his relationship with the team. For multiple sources familiar with
the situation, the two sides remain far apart heading into
(02:11):
the second week of training camp and are not currently negotiating.
Here's Michael Parsons in his own words. Ready, Okay, yes,
I wanted to be here. I did everything I could
to show I wanted to be a cowboy where the
star on the helmet. I wanted to play in front
of the best fans in sports and make this America's
team once again, the team I pops, and I grew
(02:33):
up cheering, cheering for way up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately,
I no longer want to be here. I no longer
want to be held to closed door negotiations without my
agent present. I no longer want shots taken at me
for getting injured while laying it on the line for
the organization are fans and my teammates. I no longer
(02:55):
want narratives created and spread to the media about me.
By the way, this is last month. This is Jerry Jones,
the owner of the Team's a little bit what he
was talking about. This is Jerry Jones talking about Parsons.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Just because we've signed him doesn't mean we're going to
have him. He was hurt six games last year. Seriously,
we've signed I remember signing a player for the highest
paid it's a position in the league, and he got
knocked out two thirds of the year Dark Prescott. So
there's a lot of things you can think about, just
as the player does when you're thinking about committing and
(03:27):
guaranteeing money.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
So look, it's a negotiation. Do you want to know
my level of freak out there?
Speaker 3 (03:36):
It is.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
And I'm not a Cowboy fan, but even the negotiations
is silly. The Cowboys have to do zero nothing, They
don't have to negotiate at all, and they can simply
franchise attack him for the next three years. Nothing he
can do about that. Now he'd be compensated at an
average of the top five salaries at his position in
the league. He would hamper the Cowboys ability to field
(04:02):
a really good defense or maybe even good offense because
it take ups such a large portion of their salary cap.
All those things are true. But between scrubbing whatever from
social media, whatever you want to call it, and like, well,
my agent wasn't present, Like if you wanted your agent there,
(04:22):
your agent could have been there. You know, this is
not like your Miranda rights. We're like, hey, you didn't
meet me and my random rights and I could I
could have a lawyer here, Like you can have an
agent there. You can have an agent there. And I'm
sure part of the discussion. We talked about this a lot.
(04:45):
We'll talk about it with Mark Dominic, the extended years,
all the language that includes non guaranteed stuff. That's more
for the agent than for the player. That's for the
agent to go say, look at what I got Micah
Parsons two and a eighty billion dollars, Like, yeah, there
was like one hundred and twenty guaranteed million. No, I
got two hundred eighty billion dollars for Michael Parsons non guarantee.
(05:09):
But that's because the NFL owners don't want to guarantee stuff,
Like come on, dude. The guess is that the agent
wanted just some obscene change the position, change all the
scale of the position. The team said, hey, Micah, we
were good here, you want to be here, Let's kind
of try and figure this thing out. It wasn't going
(05:29):
the way he thought. He reached back out to the
agent the angels like, wait, you were negotiating without me there,
or out trade me right now. But from Russell Wilson
back when he's in Seattle to Tyreek Hill to like
you just kind of go through it all these guys,
I'll do the same thing now. If the Cowboys want
(05:52):
to trade him, Mike, if somebody's gonna give him two
first round picks and they don't think they're a playoff team.
Then you trade Michael Parsons. No big deal. But Parsons
has gotten hurt. He does do his podcast, which can
cause him to be He says things that you don't
need to be saying in a public forum about his team,
(06:13):
about football, about whatever. And he's a star. But he
was better in the old system, not the news system.
So yeah, Jerry Jones says, every right to go, Like,
I got to be cautious about how much money I
give guaranteed because this guy got hurt last year. He's
going to get older, he plays really hard. Maybe he's
injury prone. I don't know. So I don't know how
(06:38):
you feel about it. But my feeling about it is,
Michael Parsons be a cowboy. He'll play for the Cowboys.
They'll acquiesce and give him some sort of new contract.
He'll claim victory, Cowboys will claim victory, and he'll play
the rest of his career for the Cowboys as long
as he's good. So he's not good, then they get
rid of him. How do I know that, because that's
(07:00):
what happens with all these guys. And oh yeah, by
the way, all the hissy fits, all the posts on
social media. It does feel like a lot more than
EMITTT Smith sitting a couple of games, or even Ezekiel
Elliott threatening. It's true, but part of that is that's
the generation, and that's who Micah Parsons is. You know,
(07:22):
he's tried to carve a path for himself off the
football field with his podcast and being a great interview
as well as a tremendous football player, and so because
of it, I think he thinks this is a normal
course of action. But this is no different than pick
any guy we want that end up signing a deal
(07:44):
to remain with their team when they're under contract for
their fifth year rookie option. And it sounds good, it
looks tough, but we all know we've watched the Cowboys
for years. Jerio Acquiesce, Jerio Gibb new contract, They'll pretend
like they're best friends and we move on. Do any
of you guys in the studio think think differently? I mean,
(08:05):
I just I can't see it going any differently than
that in any way that would go counter to most
everything we've seen from Jerry Jones during his tenure, especially
the last fifteen years or so during his during his tenure.
(08:27):
No chance. Yeah, we're gonna like let that guy walk,
or we're gonna trade him on his demands, nothings, no things.
I don't see it. I see this as negotiating tech.
This is no different than you're in a car dealership
and the last line of defense you have is to
walk out the door and hope they call you back. Yeah,
I'm walking out of the door. Yeah, I'm walking out
(08:49):
of the door. You walk out of the door, like
and the cowboys they've seen these trade requests in the past.
I'm sure they're not flinching. He's still give me ambother
cowboys unless somebody wants to make them some ridiculous offer,
and then they'll be like, hey, and that's really what
these things are. These things are really are really a
(09:11):
cry to the rest of the league. Hey, come trade
for me. The problem with trading for my comparisons is
you're going to trade for him, gonna take you at
least two first round picks to get him, and then
you have to give him the biggest contract anyone's ever
received at that position. Otherwise he doesn't want to go
there either. And you're in the same position. So we
do this thing as fans and as broadcasters where we
(09:32):
act like Jerry Jones should just write a blank check. Well,
there's a scale there. I have no doubt they want
to keep him. I have no doubt they want to
compensate him. But there's somewhere in between wanting to keep
him and a contract that unsettles the entire apple cart
and where the cowboys want to get to, and that's
where negotiations land. Thanks for listening to The Doug Gotleb
Show podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday

butt you Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Glad you're
taking a break from the cesspool that is social media
and listen to real media where we talk about real stuff,
(10:15):
you know, like yesterday what your favorite blizzard is. It's
important we get to the bottom of these things. No
wrong answers unless you have a problem with Oreo cookie
or or or Reese's uh peanut butter cup. Then we
got we're gonna squab over Scu're gonna do you know,
(10:41):
we were at packer camp the other day and everybody's
raving about Matt Golden, their wide receiver that they draft
in the first round, first one they drafted in two
thousand and two in the first round, and you know,
you almost start to go like, yeah, there's kind of
a little bit more pressure on him to be good
right away, because heck, if we're gonna if you if
you're finally going to use a first round pack on
a wide receiver, he'd better be a good one, because
(11:02):
there's been a plenty of other ones that you're like,
they could have taken him, may have been good and
you didn't. Well, the Chicago Bears have used first round
picks before on quarterbacks, but because they haven't really had
in our lifetime a franchise quarterback, th youre like, that
guy's just stud. It stands the reason that calla Williams
going number one overall, there'll be a lot more attention
(11:22):
and maybe a lot more expectations of him. Then you
factor in some of his quirkiness when he was more
at USC than in Oklahoma and the story coming out
that he preferred to be a Viking not a bear,
(11:43):
and you start to think, well, yeah, it's kind of
the same thing. They've drafted quarterbacks, but if you're going
to take one number one overall, he'd better be able
to ply, better be able to play. And it's still
very much up for discussion. How good is he? Uh.
This is Caleb Williams when he was asked about outside
(12:04):
noise and how much pressure he feels going into year two.
Speaker 4 (12:07):
Pressure isn't uh. Pressure is not a thing for me.
I don't you know, think of life that way in
the situation that I'm in, and so, uh, you know,
we keep chugging along and you know there's gonna be
ups and downs, and it's not you know, it's not
my job to care about what the outside, you know,
noises and things like that. My job is take care
of everything in here and go out there and play,
you know. And I didn't you know, I uh, I
(12:30):
know we didn't win as many you know games as
we wanted to last year, but you know I didn't Uh,
I didn't go twenty and twenty in interceptions and things
like that. So you know, take it for what you
want but you know, pressure is uh privilege. Pressure is
a privilege. But you know, in the situation that I'm at,
I don't think I have pressure.
Speaker 1 (12:50):
I'm gonna disagree there. I don't think anybody you have.
Ben Johnson's your head coach, and I mean he turned
earned what everyone thought was just a very average quarterback
into a franchise quarterback and a potential Super Bowl champion quarterback.
(13:10):
Granted he'd been in a Super Bowl before in Jared Goff,
but into a guy who you know, was that The
Rams thought they upgraded when they got Matt Stafford. I
think they did, but it doesn't appear to be that
much of an upgrade, right. Golf's been healthier and probably
been more consistent. Obviously, Stafford won them a super Bowl,
(13:36):
But Goff's been healthier and more consistent. And Ben Johnson
gets a lot and deserves a lot of that credit.
Now he's got Kati Williams. It's his first team.
Speaker 4 (13:45):
You have a.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
Coach who is an offensive guru who didn't draft you.
There should be pressure there. I think there is pressure there.
And part of the idea of playing guys early and
playing guys in the rookie year is that you see
some of the evolution come much more quickly than before.
(14:08):
It wasn't like he had a bang up first year.
If it doesn't start great in his second year, there'll
be questions. Do I think there's, hey, we need to
draft another quarterback next year? No, But I also don't
think there have been enough moments that we go when
we get our guy. This is our guy for twenty years,
for twenty years. So that's where the pressure level is.
(14:34):
It could go really bad, it could go really well.
It probably lands in the middle, and we probably start
talking about real pressure next year. But I don't think
it's crazy to talk about there being some amount of
pressure on. I was gonna say Trey Lance on Caleb
(14:55):
Williams this year. And there's some similarities there with the
with what's happening with the Packers. Packers have visions of
grandeur of getting to a Super Bowl. Vikings have essentially
a rookie starting at quarterback. All right, the Lions, you
know offensive coordinator is now the head coach of the Bears,
(15:16):
and they lost some personnel as well. There's reasona believe
that the Bears, who turned over their offensive line change
some things look competitive at the end of the year
that this should be a year to take a big step.
If he's not able to take a big step with them,
there'll be questions. I don't think it's hey, we need
to get out of Kata Williams business, but not yet.
Remember this is a coach who did not draft the quarterback,
(15:38):
did not draft the quarterback, and when he was taking
number one overall, not only are the questions about where
he wanted to be drafted, but there were questions about
how he handled a losing when he was at usc
which is fair because he didn't handle it well. I though,
how much pressure do you think is Caleb Williams.
Speaker 5 (15:57):
Center depends on his habits of being on social media.
I just think there's like this weird vortex with being
a Chicago Bears quarterback, and something you said really stuck
with me that they really have not had a premier
quarterback literally in our lifetimes. I mean, the closest you
(16:21):
could say is obviously Jim McMahon because they won a
Super Bowl with them, although the defense was the strength
of the team and Jim Harbaugh had a good run there.
But aside from that, I mean, who are the top
who's the top who's the top quarterback in the literally
history of the Chicago Bears. One doesn't leap to mind
(16:41):
you think of running backs of Walter Baiton and Gail Sayers,
But there seems to be some like vortex when it
comes to the Chicago Bear.
Speaker 6 (16:49):
The guys who have had set, the guys whoa I
don't knowwhere else.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
Just guess I would. Yes, they've all had that at
some point.
Speaker 6 (17:01):
The guys who have had success being in Chicago, like
any amount of success. We'd be talking about Cutler a
little bit. And Rex Grossman and Rex Grossman, I remember,
he could have amazing games and they could have games
where he absolutely imploded, like if their offense was humming,
he was throwing a bunch of touchdowns, but when it
started to go bad, it was just an implosion.
Speaker 3 (17:20):
And then Cutler.
Speaker 6 (17:21):
I don't really know even what to make of the
cut Like.
Speaker 1 (17:23):
Everybody hated Jay Cutler. Don't mention it. No, I'm just saying,
and Rex Grossman and Rex Grosman, No, I'm telling you
in Chicago, like in Chicago.
Speaker 6 (17:31):
I'm just talking about success though, not of how he's perceived. Okay,
I don't I don't know he made it remember.
Speaker 1 (17:38):
Rex Grossman took him to a Super Bowl and the
week of the Super Bowl, Lovey Smith was their head
coach at the time, had to come out and say
Rex Grosman is our quarterback. That actually happened. People are like, man,
you gotta pull Rex Grossman like he stinks. Like, hey,
Rex Grosman's our quarterback. So that's how how good Rex
(18:00):
Strossman is? You know cad m m McCown. Remember kid McCown,
he was the first round pick out of UCLA Lefty.
I mean you go back through that, You're like, oh my,
I totally forgot that was the Bears quarterback that year.
Speaker 3 (18:15):
Didn't he come in for.
Speaker 6 (18:17):
Jay Cutler when he was injured in the NFC Championship
game versus the Packers. I feel like that that might
have happened, could be wrong.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (18:25):
And then I also you think about Mitch Trubisky, who
was what second overall he was taking and and he
a lot of people he made it the playoffs. A
lot of people feel like it could have worked with
who is his coach, mister Viiser. A lot of people
think that maybe it could have worked out if he
stuck around or if those two kept working together, but
he was shipped out of town. But that's the highest
(18:47):
pick that they've taken that probably didn't do.
Speaker 5 (18:49):
Talking about Matt and Eggy.
Speaker 6 (18:51):
Yeah, Matt and Meggie.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
Yeah yeah.
Speaker 6 (18:52):
They made it the playoffs and uh and then it
just sort of wheels fell off. But a lot of
people were like, well, I don't know if uh, mister
Trubisky had enough time in Chicago to really prove or
disprove his pick.
Speaker 5 (19:01):
That was the double joint game. If I'm not mistaken
right there, they're one trip to the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
Yeah, yeah, yep, yep, yeah, I can go ahead.
Speaker 6 (19:13):
I was gonna say I think that Caleb Williams with
the change in coaching he's got Ben Johnson. If it
was the same coach two or three years in a row,
I feel like that pressure is going to bear down
on you. But when you have a new coach, you
have like you're allowed a little bit of grace to
kind of adjust to that. And if Ben Johnson really
does know what he's doing and talking about, then you
(19:34):
probably don't feel a ton of pressure like this is
going to work out because Ben Johnson is, you know,
is gonna save us. So I think Caleb's probably, like
you know, I've got a new coach. I can there
can be a little slippage, but I'm learning.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
Yep. So do we think he's I do. I think
anybody is under pressure, because we expect anybody to be.
We're in a microwave society. But I also think you
have a coach who people think is his quarterback guru,
and if you don't see distinct improvement, then there's going
(20:09):
to be a lot of whiskers of this might not
be the guy. I mean. The big thing with Kata
Williams is the ability to throw the ball downfield and
throw it accurately, not throw what's called hospital balls. You
know what hospital ball is.
Speaker 5 (20:22):
Right, I've never heard that term before until today. Oh
really no yet?
Speaker 1 (20:27):
Do tell uh Sam, do you know what a hospital
ball is?
Speaker 3 (20:31):
Sounds like something that will be uncomfortable, but all right,
I do not. I think DeVante Adams refer to the
hospital balls that Garoppolo used to throw it them all
the time.
Speaker 5 (20:40):
Oh is it when you throw your receivers so they
get smashed by a linebacker.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
Yeah, they float It floats on you, floats it. It doesn't
have that doesn't doesn't have the perfect amount of zip
and it allows guys to just tee off on you
hospital ball.
Speaker 3 (20:54):
They get a little running start yep, and it starts.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
They start, they start salivating, They start salivating. Thanks for

for The Doug Gottlieb Show at Foxsports Radio dot com,
or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app

(21:21):
but it's funny a lot of other people came around
to it, which is, how many people do you think
knew that Trey Lance was on the Chargers before last night?
Chase ste what like percentage of people you think?
Speaker 3 (21:38):
Let's see seventeen and a half.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
There you go, good, guess that's all you's your guests.
I know when you were trying to guess what people
think and know and we have no real real clue.
I get it.
Speaker 3 (21:46):
It's my favorite part of the show.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
It's your favorite part of the show.
Speaker 7 (21:48):
I know.
Speaker 6 (21:49):
I'm gonna say eight percent, Doug, eight percent of the
general public knew that Trey Lance had gone to the
Chargers eight percent.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
Well, I think people forgot that he's been with the Cowboys, right,
just again, like, go back and look at last season.
Go back and look at last season, and Cooper Rush
took over, Trey Lance was the third string quarterback and
(22:18):
he got to play in one He got to play
major STAPs in one game, the last game of the season. Anyway,
here's Jim Harball's head coach with the Chargers, talking about
his performance last night, which was really good. Trey Lance.
Speaker 7 (22:32):
Uh, you know, big night for Trey. Just played calm,
played cool, collected, ran the ran the operation. Thought he
threw the ball really well. I thought he really he
had the same kind of composure and poise, you know,
just in control. I mean, it's a there's a presence
that that I've been seeing all camp. He's had a
heck of a camp. And then he went out in
(22:54):
the game and and did that. Just a feeling of
he needs game reps and just wanted to give him
that was the game the game plan, you know, get
out there and plays. He's been playing good and you know,
college not as not as much as most guys have
coming out of college. In terms of starts and games.
And then uh, then he gets gets into pro ball
(23:15):
and you know, wins the starting job and then gets hurt.
So he hasn't had a lot of a lot of
game experience and that's what we're trying to give him.
And he acquitted himself.
Speaker 1 (23:24):
Well, I need a guess here, Jason. He's been in
the league since twenty twenty one. Okay, it's too And
remember he was the third pick in the draft. How
many NFL games do you think he's appeared in?
Speaker 3 (23:38):
Don't look, I know that he did. He appeared in
one game. I remember that one he got hurt against
the Bears.
Speaker 1 (23:47):
Right back way. It's just San Francisco, I.
Speaker 3 (23:50):
Think, so, yeah, there was a snow game.
Speaker 1 (23:53):
Just he was a starter. He was a starter for
AER for a short period of time in San Francisco. Okay,
so you want you want to enture guess how many games?
Remember we're talking five years in the NFL. How many
of you thinks he's played it.
Speaker 3 (24:06):
I'll guess five, twelve.
Speaker 1 (24:08):
Oh, I don't know if it starts. Twelve appearances in
the Nation Football League, and it's probably like in the
seven starts. And if you remember his senior year in
college or his last year in college at North Dakota State.
I believe they played like one game. That's it. So
twelve appearances I starts. So what Jim Harbaugh is saying
(24:31):
isn't wrong. Remember, and Taylor Heineke is the other guy
he's competing with to be a backup in Taylor Henekey
has led the where they the commanders then I think
the commanders to the playoffs. Right. He's also been the
starting quarterback for the Carolina Panthers, so like, we know
what we can do, what he can do. But it's
really weird that people are like, dude, Kyle Shanahan, what's
(24:55):
he doing right Jim Harbaugh's quarterback, which were like, he's
played five years in the NFL. He started five games.
There's very few teams, if any, that will start a
quarterback week one of the preseason that has started five
games in the NFL that's been in the league in
his sixth year. Doesn't happen very rarely. So he's supposed
(25:17):
to perform well, he's supposed to be came. They're not
throwing exotic blitz is at him, and he has worked
really hard to improve his throwing mechanics because by all
estimation didn't throw a great ball. But like I just
I can't get geeked out, like, oh my gosh, Chargers
got a great backup if Trey Lance becomes the answer.
(25:39):
Chargers got me to problems. Cowboys last year locked at
lost Dak Prescott, there wasn't anybody going like, you know,
we should really go to Trey Lance here. Thanks for

Speaker 8 (26:33):
Braids win it? Unbelievable, Braids win it. Twelve eleven and

Yeah, twelve eleven combined for thirty hits. Braves are forty

the Doug Outlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio Coourse. Mark
was the former gentlem manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He worked his whole life in professional football, so I
love this one. I don't know if you saw the
addition to the Micah Parsons saying I want to be traded.
So Michael Parsons came out. It was about an hour ago,
guys on social media, I don't want to be here anymore.
(27:24):
I want be traded. And then Edwarder, who always has
more and has covered the Cowboys for years, like Michaeh
Parsons is staying at Cowboys camp because he doesn't want
to incur a fifty thousand dollars fine, like, yeah, I
cannot stand being here. I'm out, but I'm not going
to leave because I don't want to lose fifty grand
a day. So, yeah, help me help me with this
(27:47):
mark likelihood that Micah Parsons remains a Cowboy.
Speaker 9 (27:53):
I still think it's pretty strong. You know a lot
of times we've heard this one before, like, I've always
wanted to be here, but it's just not going to
work out. And then Miles Garrett told us this story, right,
what was six months ago?
Speaker 1 (28:03):
Yeah, he had the good bye letter. He had the
goodbye letter even that that was posted.
Speaker 9 (28:08):
It's right, So we've seen this song and dance before.
Not that I'm disappointed in Michael Parsons or having but
you know, obviously, if you read the article of what
Michael Parsons re wrote and you kind of have to
trust that maybe he's telling the truth. What could have
felt like it It just there hasn't been a lot
of good faith negotiations that were with his agent, and
you can have conversations with the player, but you know,
(28:30):
every club kind of knows that that's a little taboo,
and it doesn't even matter what the player really says,
because at the end of the day, you know, the
agent's getting paid for a reason to be able to
help negotiate it. So, look, I look at this whole
thing and say, it makes sense. I get it. I
don't think the Cowboys will trade him, and I don't
think that. I think this is going to be a
two to week, two week, three week thing, and I
have a feeling that Michael Parsons will suddenly have money
(28:51):
solve the problems.
Speaker 1 (28:52):
Yeah, here's my guess on the agent thing, just to guess, right,
we kind of talked about the agents were the ones
that pushed for the lung guaranteed deals, but the agent's
the ones that have the non guaranteed things tacked in
because it helps them quote unquote win right in publicity. Yeah,
it feels like the agent was just trying to bleed
the Cowboys and they probably pulled them aside like look, dude,
(29:15):
like that that deal is never getting done. Ever, here's
a real deal. You think about it and how it
Then he calls his agents like, yeah, they told me
your way up. Here's the number and the agent just
hits the roof.
Speaker 9 (29:31):
Yeah, you know what, I think there's a lot of
truth to that. I also think that it's the same
thing that's happened with Trey Hendrickson. Is the market moved
so fast this year on defensive line and these elite
pass rushers, and so the agent, if the story is true,
the agent was right, you know, just let's just wait,
let's let some deals come through here, and then then
we'll come in and swoop in at the end and
get our number. The only thing I really think is
(29:52):
happening here is again, if there hasn't been any negotiations.
It's hard to say, but I think, you know, I
thought that maybe Michaels was pushing for a huge numb
a number that's going to blow everybody else out of
the water, and I thought that might be stilling the negotiations.
The market always moves. It used to be trying to
get a discount from a player if you did the
deal early. Now it's like you're getting the discount because
(30:13):
you know the market's going to continue to go up.
At least you're get into the discounts. It's hard to
doug when you kind of listen to these things, because
you know, three years from now, everyone of these guys
are signing out pro, We're going to be like, well,
wait a second, look what he's making. And so you've
got to figure out the organization, how do you want
to handle it, and how does the player respect the
deal When you're starting to take these kind of numbers
and putting them in reality. Of forty million dollars a year,
(30:33):
I mean, that's that's just a hard number to fathom.
But that's where we're at.
Speaker 1 (30:39):
Stug Out Leave Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Okay,
what about the Cowboys as a team, right there is
the there is the in the back of your mind like, well,
if I can be in a good and maybe we
move him. But again, the Cowboys are always trying to
make themselves at least above average, if not better. Where
are you on this Cowboy roster?
Speaker 9 (31:01):
I still think they're very competitive. I think you know,
the Commanders obviously were spectacular last year, and so obviously
Eagles were champions. And so when you look at this division,
you know, the Giants team like a long ways away
and then those other three teams, so like the Gamer
a game or two apart. Totally, I still think the
Cowboys rosters certainly counted enough depend on the help of
(31:22):
how things go. You know, this has been interesting for
me though Michael Parsons is a player that you know,
you thought might get have done earlier than it's gotten
to this point. It tells me also that maybe there's
something that Cowboys feel about Micah, whatever that is or
whatever they may feel, it's just this one's taking a
little bit longer. Usually the Cowboys like to get you
to camp and then negotiate and do the deal. That's
how their mo is usually known through the agent world.
(31:43):
But this one's just not worked out that way. So
there's something else holding the Cowboys back from really pulling
the trigger. And that may be something we never get
to hear about until if he does leave. But again,
I think Michaeh Parsons in the end the stage of.
Speaker 1 (31:54):
Cowboys Steut Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio, Trey
Lance looks good last night, But I try to tell
people now many people don't know who's on the Chargers,
Like he was on the Cowboys last year and their
starting quarterback went down and no one was like, hey,
we got to play Trey Lance. How do we process
what we saw last night and the reality of who
(32:16):
Trey Lance actually is.
Speaker 4 (32:17):
No.
Speaker 9 (32:18):
I mean some of the throws were really great designs.
To me, more than was great throws, right, it was
you know, rolling out and play actions and just different
things that allowed him to just kind of flip and
toss the ball. Yes, he had some good throws, you know.
And I love collins Worth. I certainly loved watching Bretton
Musburger just to be able to kind of reminisce in
my mind about just Brent Musburg in three years. But
(32:39):
it was like it was almost overwhelm done about Trey
Lance to me last night, because this is a guy that,
to your point, third pick, great, he's having a nice
Hall of Fame game. Let's get back to where this
guy really is going to be in a couple of weeks.
To me, when I watched the Hall of Fame game, yes,
I'm looking for young guys to have their shot, you know,
the first year guys, undrafted guys, you're really looking at that.
The other thing is the gym you're for, which is
(33:00):
why the Chargers dominated because they played a much cleaner game, right, Doug.
I mean, no interceptions, They had the fumble, but they
didn't lose it. They only had three penalties. I mean,
the Chargers fundamentally just played a much cleaner game, and
that to me is more important than the Trey Lance
having a nice out in for a preseason game.
Speaker 1 (33:18):
I don't know if you heard this, but John Harbaugh
was absolutely effuse in his praise of Lamar Jackson, right,
And Lamar Jackson not just as a quarterback, but Lamar
Jackson as a as a passer. And I get if
you look at the raw numbers from last year, you
(33:38):
could you could agree with, but then you look at
the playoff numbers and you know it's like eight games
seventeen hundred yards, which again, like if you're going to
you know, go to a sixteen seventeen games, It's far
below his normal production or his normal efficiency in the
regular season. So I guess my question is where does
the truth lie with Lamar Jackson and how the league
(34:01):
used him as a passer.
Speaker 9 (34:03):
Yeah, I mean, I think Lamar has really done a
good job of growing into his best self. And I
think that the Ravens know who they are. They like
to take shots down the field, they like to push
the ball down the field with the tight ends get
those A Jones as a fast receivers and now they
can run the ball or Lamar can run the ball,
and they just know how to build an offense and
they know what weapons they need in different spots to
(34:23):
be able to be that kind of an offense where
it doesn't have to be. It could be Lamar's legs,
it could be Dereck Henry's legs, it can be Lamar's arm,
it could be you know, vertical pass. If I think
about Lamar that he can hit the deep ball, and
that's so critical because that kind of it would ruin
everything if he couldn't do that, because defense would be like,
I'm just gonna take my chance and let's go get him.
And so I think Lamar is, you know, one of
the elite quarterbacks in the league. He's easily top ten.
(34:45):
He's a guy that I think maybe they rain him
down a little bit in the postseason because I think
when they especially this last year, you know, I think
they were hoping that Derek Henry would just kind of
roll through this thing in defenses. All you're trying to
do is kind of calm him down. But I still
think Jackson is an elite quarterback. In the nation FOOTBA League,
and I think he can win a Super Bowl with him?
Speaker 1 (35:06):
Is this the year.
Speaker 9 (35:09):
I really kind of think of this. I mean, I
really feel like this is the year Kansas City does
not go to the Super Bowl. I really feel like
it is between Buffalo and Baltimore. Those two teams, to me,
are a level apart from everybody else. I do think
this Chargers team is going to be better than people.
You know, I think people expect the Charges to be good,
but I think they're going to be a much improved
team again this year. But it feels like if Derrick
(35:33):
Henry stays healthy, I can't I would be very comfortable
saying that Baltimore Ravens could be Super Bowl champions.
Speaker 1 (35:39):
M Mark Dominic, Colin, colin, his colin, his shot. Okay,
let's we were at Yeah, we were at Packers camp
earlier this week, and there's a lot of hope there
and and so far. Matthew Goldens like, well, if you're
gonna drave the wide receiver, that's a pretty good one
to draft, right. I look at that division, it's interesting.
(36:00):
Have been the top of it, but new coordinators, some
new pieces there, maybe a step back. I don't know
what your thoughts are. Vikings, third new quarterback in three years,
this one inexperienced and the Bears should be better. But
again first time head coach, and we still haven't seen
it from Caleb Williams. I think it's a great opportunity
for the Packers, but I don't know where you are.
(36:21):
What are your thoughts on what's the right you know,
they start talking about Super Bowl or at least hosting
home playoff games, what's a reasonable outlook for that team?
Speaker 9 (36:31):
Yeah, I think that is. I think that can they
close the gap or can they up their game? I
guess is more you know to catch Detroit lines and
where they are, and I say they can. You know,
talk about continuity. They're the team that have the most continuity,
and that's the biggest thing you can ask for. You know,
you've got a bunch of players that know each other.
The offensive line that's intact has got some depth to
it too. Certainly, a wide receiver room is good. You know,
(36:54):
we talked about it before, the Muskrat being back where
he wasn't an impact player just because of injuries last year,
and now you're going to have him at Tucker Craft
and I like Jordan Love and then I also love
you know, coach athlete is the defensive coordinator on the
other side, and him having another year of just the
same system, the same you know, desires of what we
want the players to do, and they're they're not learning
a new system, they're just getting better at that system.
(37:14):
So I really do like the Green Bay Packers. I
think that they can get to twelve. Thirteen is going
to be hard, just because I think the division in
the NFC and looking at the schedule, but I think
twelve can win that division. As much as you know,
as good as Detroit was last year, I think it's
gonna be a lot more of that traditional black and
blue division where it's going to be a lot tougher.
But the Minnesota is the one I'm not And I
like JJ McCarthy. I hope he's everything I think he is,
(37:36):
But I feel like Minnesota is going to be hovering
right around five hundred this year, so I don't feel
like they're going to be quite the same push where
that's where I think the Packers will make up some ground.
Speaker 1 (37:45):
You know, I heard Baker was on a podcast, and
Baker talked about how Tampa just lets him be him, right,
He doesn't have to be a quote unquote franchise quarterback
in terms of persona, how he dresses and how he acts.
Is that fair? Is that why Tampa's been able to
be a place that he's more successful.
Speaker 9 (38:04):
Yeah, and I think that, you know, it's Jason Light's
done a really good job of, you know, surrounding Baker
with some nice talent. You know, Bucky Irvin came in
there last year. He looked phenomenal in terms of his role.
For Shod White is a really good running back too,
So they got a one two punch there. When you've
got Godwin and Mike Evans, you're feeling pretty good about that.
And you know you've got a good tight indrum. You know,
guys that maybe aren't household names, but certainly are good players,
(38:26):
and you just break them down by tape and so
all those pieces come together and says, well, you know,
you surrounded them with stable pieces that are consistent. Players
that catch the ball, especially the running backs catch the
ball so well out of the backfield. All those are
part of like, well, yeah, I can understand that. But
you know, but when you talk to the players and
you talk to They see Baker as a leader, and
(38:48):
so he's doing it. It may not be to have
to be the robro guy, but he's certainly doing the
work to make them follow.
Speaker 1 (38:54):
Mark. Awesome stuff. Once you have a great weekend. Next
week we got everybody playing preseason games, so it gets real.
Enjoy that weekend. We'll talk to you soon.
Speaker 9 (39:04):
Happy Hoguest. Thanks all right.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
That's Mark Dominic, who spent over twenty years in NFL
front offices and scoutings. Former general manager of the tamp
Bay Buccaneers.
