Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottl Show. Here's in
the bonus with Doug Gottl.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Who What Up Show? Fox Sports Radio, iHeartRadio app Welcome in.
So today the NCAA decided I'm not going to expand
the NCAA Tournament, and the basketball purist in meat says like,
(00:31):
that's great, that's great, Like, don't screw up what we've
you know, what's been perfect for so long. But the
truth is, like we're sitting here protecting the sixty four
team bracket, right, that's what's at stake. But there's actually
sixty eight teams in the NCAA tournament. Hey we what Yeah,
we get the first four and those are playing games.
There's sixty eight teams in a sixty fourteen field. Why
(00:52):
are we acting like there's not It's a great question.
And so you know, look, I understand that we have
lots of people who cover the sport who will say
this is the world would be the worst thing ever.
And I get it. Like the part of the thing,
the allure to the NCAA tournament is that bracket because
(01:14):
your grandma, your mom, your sister, your brother, your uncle,
and then us basketball nuts can all fill it out,
and generally the people who know more do worse because
we start going like, well, last year, obviously I did well,
but I just based it on what I thought people
were paying, and I think I'll continue doing that until
there's some sort of scale where there's any sort of
(01:35):
even playing field. It's not right now, but the point
is that eventually it's going to expand. It's a matter
of when, not if, And it's going to need to
expand because well, everybody needs to make more money because
everything costs more money, and it's just a question of
the cost benefit analysis. But we're literally holding onto something like, no,
(01:56):
it can't expand beyond the sixty to fourteen field like
we have sixty eight. It's already been expanded. If that,
if more teams would water it down for you, then
where were you the first time it got watered down?
And why wouldn't you concede that it's gonna You know,
you can still have the sixty fourteen field. Just have
MOLLSS playing games, just have most playing games. There's ways
in which you can mandate that a certain number of
(02:17):
non Power four teams or power five teams count the
Big East in basketball, get in there. That's that's fine
as well. But this sticking our head in the sand
and saying, hey, we've been doing this for a long time.
It just works this way. It does. You don't need
everybody in the tournament because that would diminish the NCAA
the conference tournaments, which are really cool, and it would
(02:39):
also create this a different way of doing things. But
everyone would get in. It just would change so much
the landscape pool so much of the money, and I
don't know if it's worth it. I think it's good
the way they have it, But but please don't act
like we're at sixty four teams now where at sixty eight.
Please don't act like you're some you're purist that wants
to maintain what we've always had in college basketball and
(02:59):
that changed a decade ago.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio in the iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
App Let's get to what the Fox Says and now
Snry did at this time in the Bonus podcast to
play for a portion of a previous show on Fox
Sports Radio Fox Sports One, here's Colin Cowher talking about
Caleb Williams.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
He's thrown at a net. He goes, oh for three,
and the last throw is so bad he misses the
net completely and then he gets kicked off. How do
I know this matters because they deleted it after a
while because it was getting so much play. So when
a quarterback is unproven, like Caleb Williams, camp matters more,
(03:46):
not just for the player, for the staff. When you
haven't shown your competency, when you haven't shown your aptitude,
a player's confidence. I mean you can see on that
net video that was in Caleb's head. So Caleb Williams,
he struggled in college. We're starting to get a drip
drip drip with Caleb Williams. So he struggled in college,
and I said this, I loved him. A little bit
(04:08):
of hero Ball could be a little moody accuracy two
gms told me a little worried about it. Think they'll
clean it up. Then he goes last year, Oh, little
hero ball, A lot of accuracy issues. Now we go
to OTA's in camp, drip drip drip, more accuracy issues.
(04:29):
Now we've got video. So all of this stuff matters,
and it matters more for a young, unproven chefs artist quarterback.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Yeah again, there's always context needed, right, I mean, part
of the Caleb Williams thing is he struggled last year.
Part of it is, you know, there's this he has
Ben Johnson. Now there's no excuses. They loaded up the
offense with other pieces for him. Part of it is
is that he didn't play well in their open scrimmage.
(05:04):
But we don't know if like the net is a
he's like one of those mental block things, you know,
where he's fine, Like he's not that inaccurate that he
can't at the net. And it could be that they
had money on the line, they're messing with each other
and whatever. So I get how it looks, but let's
not take a snapshot of Kittle Williams the quarterback and go, hey,
(05:25):
he missed three different areas in a net and look
like he threw a fit. So we think he's gonna
stink this year. Here's Dan Beyer co hosting with Mike
Harmon on Fox Sports Sunday talking about Michah Parsons contract situation.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
Michah Parsons is still showing up. This isn't a Trey Hendrickson,
who at the time left Cincinnati and said see you later.
I'm going to Florida or wherever.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
And he's there.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
He's not getting his fines accruing because he is at
least showing up. But again, checking the calendar, it's August third.
This is what happens on all guests third. Jerry even
admits that's what happens on August third. Jerry thinks this
is all a game. If we're here on September third,
(06:09):
which would be a day before kickoff of the regular season,
now we've got something. Now, now there's something happening even
two weeks down the road, I would say that I
think we've got something because there's got to be some
ramp up for Parsons to be ready to start the season.
But to have this going on not exact situation, but
it's what Terry McLaurin is kind of dealing with in
Washington as well. We're just dealing with the Dallas Cowboys.
(06:32):
So everything is just ten times bigger.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Yeah, I think it does go on a lot of places,
and it is made bigger, and part of this deal
is made into why is he doing it? Maybe it's
because Jerry Jones and his son Stephen, they choose to
make comments publicly, where so many other gms or owners
do not. Here's Brady Quinn talk about the Eagles comparing
them to the Cowboys.
Speaker 5 (06:54):
You look at other organizations who are able to pay
their top players and get business. Let's just say, I
don't know Philadelphia that seems to be like a team
that's won the Super Bowl, signed guys back, builds up
rosters that are able to get to multiple Super Bowls.
They don't ever have it, at least doesn't feel like
they have as much drama in the offseason in regards
(07:17):
to their top players. Now, Dallas Cowboys fans may take
issue with that, but I would say between dak CD, Micah,
you can go back to Zeke, it's always something. And look,
Philly has had their moments where they've been frustrated with
all Nick Sirianni's success, like it wasn't good enough, or
(07:39):
they've questioned if Jalen Hurts was good enough, even though
he's never given them anything other than playing through injuries
a reason to believe otherwise, Yeah, played Mahomes in the
first Super Bowl, you know, obviously played fantastic this past
month and just every single time. So just using that
if that's the bar, and I think Jerry Jones talks
about winning Super Bowls, talks about that, but for the
(08:01):
Dallas Cowboys in particular, because that's in your division as well.
Just look, just look a little bit northeast and you
never have a team that deals with this sort of drama.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
Oh, I would agree with that, they're one of one,
but again, like we're going to compare them to the
I don't know if that's true. I mean, the Giants
dealt with this sort of drama last year with Saquon Barkley.
The Commanders are dealing with this sort of drama with
with Terry McLaurin. So you know, the Titans dealt with
(08:42):
that with AJ Brown, who then went to the Philadelphia Eagles.
So I mean, look, if we want to use it
to make the Eagles feel better about how great they are, sure, sure,
but it wasn't always pretty. It's not always been pretty
with the Eagles, you know, the transition to power, when
Chip Kelly got there, then Chipmate moves and when he
(09:03):
got rid of running backs. They you know, Shady McCoy
said he was a racist, right, there's real infighting there.
I found that winning cures all ills that lots of
Cowie's really good. But he's winning, so now everybody's kissing
his ass. But if he wasn't winning, people would say,
you know, he thinks he knows everything. Well right now
(09:26):
it feels like he does know everything. But I just
gave you the two other teams in the division, and
they've had very similar issues, very similarly. Public doesn't feel
as big because it's not the Cowboys. That's what the
Fox says say.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Let's find out who what is annoying? Jason Stewart.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
And now it's your annoying, Hey, Doug.
Speaker 6 (10:04):
Mary kay Cabot. She's been covering the Browns forever. I'm guessing.
She tells the story from the with the context that
she used to cover the Browns when Bill Belichick was there.
That was in the early nineties, so she's been around.
She was speaking at some award ceremony this weekend and
had this zinger for Belichick.
Speaker 7 (10:26):
Bill Belichick was the first Browns coach I ever covered.
You see, if you start out with Bill Belichick. No
one can rattle you after that. If Bill didn't like
something I wrote, he'd call and yell at me. If
you asked a dumb question, he'd call you out. Eventually,
(10:47):
I had to learn to stand up to him. During
one of those yelling matches. I told him, if you
don't have the footballs to say that to the guys,
then don't say it to me. Bam. But now I
(11:07):
totally understand why Bill gave me such a hard time.
I was twenty eight at the time, and he just
couldn't relate to a woman that old.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
Hell. Hell, Mary kay cab it Hell.
Speaker 6 (11:25):
So that video made the rounds, and it got the
attention of Jordan Hudson, who is Bill Belichick's girlfriend now
twenty eight. I don't know how old she is, maybe
twenty four.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
She's twenty four, I think.
Speaker 6 (11:42):
And this is her response via tweet. Not much of
a laugh, no wonder. So many have contempt for the media,
especially those who want to be the story rather than
report on the story. I think you're a little too
sensitive here, Jordan. I think that if you choose use
to have a romantic relationship with a man, what fifty
(12:04):
years older than you. Yes, you're gonna hear jokes. You're
gonna hear a lot of jokes at your expense, at
your old man's expense. Uh, probably want to develop a
thicker skin, Jordan Hudson, you annoy me that you haven't
had that much self awareness yet.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
Yeah, it's ooh, I thought you put it perfectly, honestly,
like there's a lot of things you said. That's the
perfect way to put it. If you choose to have
a relationship with a senior citizen and you're not twenty
five years old, you can't I'm sorry. You can't say, oh,
you can't make fun of me when he's a public figure, right,
(12:49):
So I don't. I don't care. She's You're sorry. You
can be as sensitive as you want. None of us care,
none of us.
Speaker 6 (13:01):
I'm guessing I'm the reports out of a Pablotore's mole,
which I think is Bill Belichick's family, or is that
she's purchasing land or properties on Belichick's credit. I don't
think she's had to worry about money for the past
eighteen months. So at the cost of that is that
you get you get to deal with lame jokes from
(13:23):
people that cover your sport. Sorry, yes, So I wasn't
excited about this at all. We didn't bring it up
last week because I don't know why I was supposed
to be excited that Major League Baseball was going to
have a baseball game at the Bristol Speedway Classic. I
don't know why. I don't know why we were supposed
to be thrilled about this. And then Saturday happened, so
(13:46):
a couple of the things. According to Awful Announcing dot com,
it started to pour, and I guess they didn't have
the infrastructure to deal with weather, which is really strange.
I guess there's a way you do with weather as
a racetrack and there's a way you do with weather
as a baseball and they those two weren't the same.
(14:09):
They never let the Fox broadcast know that it had
been postponed, so you had broadcasters live on the air
basically telling the viewers that the game's coming up when
it had been canceled. Then there were reports that concession
ran out before the Star Spangled banner, no food or
drinks before the Star Spangled banner. And then there were
(14:30):
just like pictures and pictures of people with awful seats
Now I will say this, you purchased those seats, I'm
guessing you knew where they were. I'm guessing they came
with some kind of one of those AI, you know,
perspective things like where you were going to be. So
that's kind of on you if you had bad seats.
But I did like this comparison that MLB's version of
(14:53):
the Fire Festival. Now Fire Festival, I think has been
on every single streaming platform as a.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
Document Was it fry? Was it fire or fry? Was
it f r y e or f y r e?
Speaker 6 (15:05):
It's fire, it's pronounced why fire. Yeah, Okay, So I
like that because I've seen every documentary. I can't get
enough of the Fire Festival. I think it's a great
American story of how you humiliate people that just want
to be famous and hang with famous people. So anyways,
(15:25):
Major League Baseball, huge swing and miss. They made up
for it on Sunday, or they made up the game
at least, but it sounds like they pissed off a
lot of people on the way.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
Yeah, of course they did. It was who was it?
Who is it? What's that guy's named Joe Pamploni or
whatever his name is. Who's like, yeah, whoever came up
with this idea should get a raise. And then it
started raining and people like, you know, it became old
takes exposed, so funny, so hysterical. I loved it. Yeah
(15:59):
that hey, how come no one's ever hosted a game
inside a racetrack before? Eh, that's why, that's why hysterical.
Speaker 6 (16:13):
The it broke a record for most attended baseball game
of all time, and so if but if half the
seats are shitty, why does that record matter? But anyways,
I play softball once a week, and I play softball
once a week because my son runs the team, and
(16:34):
I like when my son's happy. And then so I
tell people of all the priorities of why I play softball,
number one is to make him happy. Priorities two through
seven are don't get hurt, and then be competitive is
way down the list. I don't need to be competitive,
I don't need to hustle, just don't get hurt. So
(16:55):
I was invited to play softball this weekend, and simply
jogging out a ground ball to short, I pulled my
quad muscle. So what does that mean? You're saying it
means I'm over fifty and it means that I can't
play in my son's softball game this weekend, and then
I'm going to San Francisco on a vacation and my
(17:19):
super hot girlfriend Christina told me We're going to do
a lot of walking in San Francisco. So I think
my vacation's compromised and my weekly game is compromised, all
because I chose to go out in the field and
jog out a ground ball to shortstop. So I'm really
thankful on that.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
Yeah, I mean it's one of those softball It gave
me such little rewards, right there is the you can
get a hurt pulling a hammy. Other guys take it
way too seriously. Yeah, those two things for me are
are are the big ones. Big ones, huge ones.
Speaker 6 (17:57):
So soft tissue injuries, the baseball game at the car
racing speedway and Jordan Hudson getting sensitive about jokes.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
Mm hmmm. Wow, that's a hard one. That is a
hard one. Hmmm. I'm gonna go Jordan Hudson getting sensitive,
(18:32):
and the logic behind it is like, dude, really, right, really,
you're gonna get sensitive about people making fun of the
fact you're dating a seventy five year old dude. Come on,
you're not.
Speaker 1 (18:51):
Why are we doing this?
Speaker 2 (18:53):
Why do I.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
Because we can.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
Just so far.
Speaker 6 (19:00):
Warning to those of you that might be listening to
the podcast driving your kids from school or something, this
is the most flagrant use of this segment that we've
ever had. So I apologize ahead of time, but it's
undeniable sound and we can only play it here because
you can't hear it over the air. Cam Newton, former
league MVP, is in the podcast space. Not only is
(19:22):
he in the podcast space, but he's starting to have
nonsports people. He's starting to go Shannon Sharp on us
having celebrities. Ray J was his guest. Now, if you
forget ray J became famous for making Kim Kardashian famous
for having sex with her on a videotape. That's ray J,
(19:43):
and this was him with Cam Newton. Do you play
both ways?
Speaker 8 (19:48):
Come on, bro, I ain't never played both ways?
Speaker 2 (19:50):
Okay. I think that's important to mention because when you
say you want to shower with another man.
Speaker 8 (19:57):
Think about it like this, people's sexuality?
Speaker 1 (20:06):
Why what does that matter?
Speaker 2 (20:08):
It does not? Why?
Speaker 1 (20:09):
But why? Why ask the question? Because it's just like
the question that I asked in regards to you saying
that you're not a brother.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
No, no, no, not you.
Speaker 8 (20:19):
Okay, I'm talking about in general, like why ask the
question of what actual hole are people enjoying? That's what
we're asking because somebody could be an ear fucker. What
is the they're not gay and they're not straight, they
like fucking ear holes?
Speaker 1 (20:36):
Who are they? It's irrelevant?
Speaker 2 (20:39):
Okay? What uh? Yeah, I'm sorry, dude. If you want
to shower with other dudes, you are gay. Right, that's
we're lockstep in that one. Jase dou been not I
don't care, but I don't. I also don't understand the
(21:03):
yeah I don't play both sides thing, and then also deflect,
you know, deflecting with the what does it matter? It
doesn't matter until you made it matter. Wow.
Speaker 6 (21:16):
The only thing, the only thing rej didn't do in
that bite was pull a Tom cruise and threatened to
sue Cam Newton for asking him if he goes both ways.
Speaker 7 (21:26):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
Yeah, that was a bizarre one.
Speaker 1 (21:30):
I don't care.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
I mean that one is crazy. Yeah, that one was.
That one was crazy. Well, I can play for you
because we can. That's it for the end of the
Bonus podcast. You got the radio show every day three
to five Eastern, twelve to two percent Fox Sports Tradio,
iHeartRadio APP. I'm Doug Gotlie
