Hope you had an outstanding weekend As we creep closer
and closer to football being on television, which makes everybody,
everybody more engaging what we're doing. Let's just kind of
(00:46):
be honest, right, and that's just the reality to it.
So Hope you're good. Hope you're good. Have you checked
out our YouTube page. You should see all of our
stuff on it, all of it, follow it all. Uh.
Can we start with Caleb Williams? Shall we?
Speaker 2 (01:09):
So?
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Caleb Williams has been probably the second most discussed quarterback
of this offseason. That's that's I'm gonna go with. I'm
gonna go with the second most discussed quarterback of this
off season. You're like, Okay, well, how did you how
do you come to that conclusion. Well, I would say
Aaron Rodgers was the most discussed quarterback in this offseason.
(01:35):
You know, the visit to the Steelers, the waiting, the assumption,
then finally he agrees the terms of the Steelers. It's
not that you know, there was a there was a
small period of time where somebody in sports radio talked
about Pat Mahomes weight. Right. There's been some discussions about
Anthony Richardson and the Colts and the idea that that
(01:59):
Danny die is going to beat him out. There's obviously
Shadoor Sanders and the waiting in the NFL draft, and
Joe Flaco and the Browns of an average at best
team have been over discussed. But again, and this is
purely on my spidey senses, that Caleb Williams is the
second most discussed quarterback of the off season. Why he
(02:20):
was last year's number one overall pick. He's in a
major market in Chicago. The Bears has fired their coach
hired Ben Johnson, who's seen this an offensive guru, changed
so much of their offensive personnel set him up, we
think for success. Cowherd has moved to Chicago, so suddenly
now he is the voice of Chicago Sports. Like all
of these things are happening at once. So we're talking
(02:43):
a ton about Caleb Williams would normally he's just a
second year of quarterback coming off of a disappointing first year,
and you got people sort of freaking out about his
play this past weekend. First there was the viral video
of him trying to throw the ball into one of
those nets with the specific holes for different throws and
(03:06):
then looking like he was throwing a fit. And I'd
give it a bit of a pass because we don't
know if they were playing for money, and if he
had nailed it the first ten times and this was
the eleventh time, or he just stinks and can't throw
a football. I don't know, and I don't care. What
I do know is that Ben Johnson is widely regarded
as an offensive guru. He was brought in. If they
didn't have Caleb Williams, they wouldn't have hired Ben Johnson,
(03:28):
right but if you have an elite quarterback or potentially
early quarterback, you hire the most elite offensive coordinator. Ben
Johnson was seen as that with the Detroit Lions. Here's
Ben Johnson after a scrimmage where the fans saw Caleb
Williams struggle.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
We got some good work in.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
It was sloppy, sloppier than I'm probably hoping we would
be at this point. Particularly, we had a couple of
really good practices over the last two and then took
us a little while to get going and hear the
pads clicking. But I thought towards the end we picked
it up and it got pretty competitive.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
Yeah, so he's disappointed. It's not the end of the world.
But it does give you caution. It does give you caution.
And you know, there's been some other discussions over why
he doesn't throw the ball downfield and that he holds
onto the ball too long, and both of those things,
the crispness of his downfield throws and the holding on
(04:24):
the ball too long, have both led people to be
a little bit disappointed. So far, it doesn't matter, like
none of this stuff matters. Trey Lance looked unbelievable of
the Hall of Fame Game. None of it really needs
the third quarterback on the Charger's depth chart. It doesn't
really matter until there's real games, and then it does,
(04:46):
and it's starting to kind of paint the picture of yikes, yikes, yikes.
And you know, this is one of those things where
we don't have context. We don't know. I mean, it's
like the Browns are constantly having letting people put out
(05:07):
the stats for their quarterbacks, Like we don't know who
went the ones, the twos, the threes, what they're trying
to work on. I can tell you this from obviously
personal experience as a coach. Last season in the summer,
we did mostly offense. We did a lot of we
did defense. We had, you know, one day a week
(05:27):
would be solely defense, one day week would be solely offense,
and then one day week we would scrimmage and then
we'd have one day where it would be kind of
a hybrid of the two. But guess focusing a little
bit more on offense. And the idea behind it was,
hey man, I'm new all these guys could leave. We
want to keep it fun and we want to learn
to have them play together and really be crisp offensively. Ultimately,
(05:49):
the defense and the rebounding is what undid us. Now.
We had a lot of injuries, so wouldn't have might
not have mattered anyway, But if you watched our practices
now and we're off for the next couple of weeks,
you would say, Wow, the offense looks kind of clunky.
The defense. We don't know if the defense is really
that much better or it's just because we haven't worked
(06:09):
a ton of offense. We've worked a ton of defense
and rebounding. But it does stand a reason that if
you hire Ben Johnson, you put in all new offensive players,
and you put in an offensive system, and you have
a quarterback who's back after starting a rookie season, that
it should look better than it looks. The guess is
that Ben Johnson has his hands fingerprints all over the
(06:29):
offense and that's got to be his bride and joy,
and it's not working out us off yet. And the
difference in the NFL now as opposed to the NFL
twenty years ago is that guys play right away and
if in year two they can't play like they've gotten
two years of playing and you're like, yeah, I don't know,
then you do know, and you move on. You do know,
(06:52):
you move on. There's a lot of talk about the
CBA and about the fairness of things and about rookie
contract et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. I will tell
you that Kayleb Williams is the first of the nil
generational quarterbacks. Remember, didn't have a senior year, Right, it's COVID.
(07:17):
So comes in and it wasn't COVID. It was the
year year before it was COVID. Yeah, he came in
from DC. He was sitting behind Spencer Rattler, and then
three games in he was the start at Oklahoma and
then left Oklahoma to follow Lincoln Riley to USC. He
was far and away the highest paid player at USC.
(07:40):
And yeah, ad he stayed in college, he probably would
have made more money in that final year than he
made his rookie year with the Bears. But the reason
you go to the NFL is for that second big
paycheck where now you make generational wealth, life changing wealth,
and the kind of wealth to where you can put
it away and never work a day in your life
if you know you're doing but it has not gone
(08:04):
as according to plan. This is not me telling you.
Caleb Williams stinks. He made some plays last year like ooh,
some of those golf swing like plays right, like that
one golf swing, Like, hey, you're not bad. I was
that that way. This Saturday. Saturday, I got up a
friend of mine who he's the CEO of Fast and All. Anyway,
(08:28):
we went up to a course in Door County. Maxwell
Brace is what it's called. It's just a muni. He
never plays because he works all the time. And we
played and he's like, how good are He's like, ah,
I'm okay. And then once we got to the sixth
or seventh hole, like I hit a couple. I was like, hey,
you're pretty good. Like no, no, no, don't kid yourself.
We're at whole six and now I hit a couple
of decent shots. But for Caleb Williams, that's kind of
(08:48):
how he was last year where there was a couple
of players You're like, hey, bears might have the guy.
You know, if you put a better offense around, a
better offensive line, better offensive scheme, better skill position, players like,
you might have a guy. Well they have all that,
and he's still in that kind of golf mode like
there's a throw here, or there, but otherwise doesn't look great.
(09:10):
Doesn't look great. But when your head coach is an
offensive guy and the expectations are him to be the
offensive grou to fix things. And I'm sure the biggest
reason they hired him was not just that he's a
sexy candidate, but that he could work and fix their quarterback. Right.
He made Jared Goff into an elite quarterback. That's how
(09:34):
he's seen. But here we are a month or so
into the Caleb Williams experiment with Ben Johnson, and to
say mixed results to be would be overstating the positive.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
Doug gott leave Show Fox Sports Radio. Let's dense. Oh,
we got a bunch to get to. Man, the Yankees
kind of stink right, got swept over the weekend when
snuck up on me. Yeah, we'll talk aboutle baseball. Baseball
misic goes on the IL. By the way, when did
(10:22):
the DL become the I L. I'm just I'm just
wondering there.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
Maybe about three or four years ago when the word
disabled became a derogatory tom Ah.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
Did was it like a broadcasting or did somebody suddenly
do it? And like everybody just.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Copied, Baseball made it a rule.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
Are they baseball injured list is supposed to disabled list?
Speaker 5 (10:51):
They also changed Remember we never had a ten day
d L. It was always fifteen day DL. Now we
have a ten day and a fifteen day.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
Take a quick closing the house. It's the Doug Gottlieb
Show here on Fox Sports Radio. And he's our good friend.
Of course, he's the former general manager of both the
Chargers and the Raiders, and now he's going to be
a weekly contributor here to the Doug Gottlieb Show. He's
Tom Telesco kind of to spend some time with us.
And what is this year like? Right? It was twelve
(11:20):
straight years eleven straight with the Chargers, one with the
Raiders as a general manager. What is this year like
to not have to worry about cutting down a roster
and putting things together for week one of the season.
Speaker 6 (11:34):
Yeah, I mean, I'll be honest, it's really different. I mean,
for me, it's been thirty years in the NFL. It's
best thirty training camps that I've been in and then
I played four years of.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
College football, four years of high school football.
Speaker 6 (11:46):
That's thirty eight straight years I was in training camp
this time of year. So it's been different. So I've
been just trying to fill the void with things like this,
you know, just talking football, keeps being engaged doing some
different things in the saw, whether it's you know, talking
NFL football, college football that I'm gonna do a little
bit of media stuff, and then taking some high school
(12:08):
football on the side. So just trying to feel that
football void that that that I'll have to this is
all I know. But it's been a different experience. It's
something I'm trying to get used to and trying to
enjoy it a little bit, not having that the three
hundred and sixty five day a year pressure over the
top of your head, which I kind of enjoy that
part of it, but I'd like to take a step
(12:29):
back and enjoy life a little bit.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
Okay. Well, one of the success stories of the end
of your tenure with the Chargers was the drafting of
Rashaun Slater. He signed a four year, one hundred and
fourteen million dollar deal. Do you think it matters what
side he plays on, probably not.
Speaker 6 (12:50):
You know, they're so unique that they have two tackles,
him and Joe All they can play left or right.
Typically with me like if I have a player that's
a difference maker a certain position and I just don't
want to move him, you know, I wouldn't want to
mess with that. And Joe Wall proved to be an
excellent right tackle. So sick Ray Shawn's in a good spot.
It's funny when when he was at Northwestern, there were
(13:11):
just a lot.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
Of talks because he doesn't have.
Speaker 6 (13:13):
That typical length and height arm length for a tackle,
So there are a lot of discussions amongst teams, even
amongst us our coaching staff are our scouting staff, is
he at guard?
Speaker 2 (13:23):
Is he a center?
Speaker 6 (13:24):
In the end, and we did a lot of work
and decided, look, he's a left tackle. He blocked some
really good pass rushers in the Big ten. He's got outstanding.
I saw the cability. He's very strong, he can anchor
on people. His arms are a little bit short for
the position. But in the end, like we decided, if
that is his only negative and it doesn't really show
(13:44):
up in his play, I think we can handle that part.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
Of it.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
So I'm glad he got paid.
Speaker 6 (13:48):
He's really earned it, and you know he's a big
time player for them.
Speaker 1 (13:52):
And I saw it with the weekend. I'm sure you did.
Keenan's coming back. What does he have left in the tank?
Speaker 6 (13:59):
He is such an outstanding runner, not only with his
quickness but that he still has but his feel for
the game, so I think he still had some play
in him. Obviously him and knowing Justin Herbert very well,
that will take long to get that connection going again.
And he's just he's a reliable player on third down
(14:21):
and right now, Lad McConkey is that guy, and he's outstanding.
You worry a little bit about the size and the
beating that he takes because he is tough. He works
the middle of the field a lot, so you want
to make sure you have enough options out there. Keenan
will give them a great option if that's what happens.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
Hopefully it does.
Speaker 6 (14:38):
Would love to see him and his career as a charger,
and Keenan being a really good VET decides maybe I'll
wait a couple of weeks in the training camp before
I get out there.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
So yeah, you know what he's doing.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
Yeah, he's he's no, he's no new beat to this thing. Okay,
let's go to the Let's go to the Raiders. You're
their GM up until right for the right for the
draft until late in the end of the spring. What
are your thoughts on what they're I mean, you were
trying to change that roster around, and you know that
(15:09):
you keep having It's like there are how they are
a reconstructed house that keeps bringing in different contractors. What
is his contractor what have they done to make it
look different than when you left it.
Speaker 6 (15:21):
Look, I'm gonna be completely honest, honest with you, Like
I think they've done a great job what they did
in the off season. You know, getting Geno Smith in there, it.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
Was just huge.
Speaker 6 (15:31):
You know, he's got he's got background as a player,
a good veteran presence. You know, he's one of those
few players that has gotten better later in his career
and you know, maybe just needed a chance to play
a longer stretch of time, which you got with the Seahawks.
His relationship with Tie Carroll is nice to have. They
looked at upgrade on offense. Obviously, Ashton gent was standing pick.
(15:54):
I loved him in college.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
The offense just needs a lot more juice.
Speaker 6 (15:57):
You know, you can't have only Brock Bowers as far
as an explosive threat, so acid Genty will give that
to them. I think the offensive line is better than
what people think. And the defense, we had some injuries
last year. I think there's a lot there now. They've
They've added a lot of reasons in the off season,
a lot of veteran players, especially at linebacker, but they're
starting to just like Peak tell you think he would.
(16:20):
He's building a secondary in his vision which is tall,
long and fast, and yeah, I think they I think
they made really big strives in the off season. It's
just it's just a really hard division. And we've got
Andy Reid and Sean Payton and Jim Harbaugh. It's just
a tough vision division to get through. So we'll see
what the record ends up at the end of the year.
But I do think they've they've made some big improvements.
Speaker 1 (16:42):
Micah Parson says he wants out. Says he wants out.
The Cowboys have to do absolutely nothing right because they
can franchise tag Him for three years and make them
franchise Taggy. So that can happen, and there's a lot
of talk about, hey, this is typical Cowboys. No else
operates this way. But I mean, like, look, Terry McLaurin,
(17:02):
he wants out the Giants. You know, they had the
Saquon issue last year. They've they've had plenty of issues.
So I guess, let me just ask you, if you're
Steven Jones, how do you handle where Micah Parsons is
right now?
Speaker 6 (17:19):
Well, you know, they've the one thing that's that And
I kind of saw this this that every indication is
going to get worse before it got better. When before
training camp they started to talk publicly about not talking
to the agent. We don't even know his name, cutting
him out of the process.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
That's that's just difficult.
Speaker 6 (17:38):
It's just it's not common to negotiate directly with the player,
unless of course he doesn't have an agent.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
Agents are going to be part of the process.
Speaker 6 (17:45):
They are, and they negotiate contracts for a living, you know,
hundreds thousands of contracts, and that's why players use them
for guidance and advice.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
On their deal.
Speaker 6 (17:57):
So to me, there was just no way to deal
with an get done without the agent involved. So to me,
at this point, it's really about just bending some senses
to make sure you get both sides on the phone
and just working towards that contract and that that's.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
Me is the first step to get there.
Speaker 6 (18:14):
So whoever makes that first call, I don't know, but
you got to kind of even out the relationship first.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
And it sounds like.
Speaker 6 (18:22):
And this is smart of the agent's part, that they
wanted to wait to have all these other edge rushers signed,
whether it's Crosby or TJ. Watt, Miles Garrett, get those
on the books and then you know, we'll kind of
use those as comps. So you know, I don't know
if you can bang on the Cowboys too hard for
not getting the deal done early, because this other side,
(18:43):
and I think Stephen Jones and Jerry Jones had mentioned
that other side had to want to get a deal
done as well. Now, obviously he wants to get paid,
but if they want to wait and see where other
deals come in, then you're gonna have to you have
to wait. So that's where they are now. So but
first it's all about relationship. For it's gonna have to
be flooded out before they get moving. I expected to
(19:03):
get done. This is you know, if you're a Cowboys fan.
This is just part of it. But and I don't
see any chance of a trade happening. So the deal
will get done at some point, but it's got to
fix the relationship first.
Speaker 1 (19:15):
Stut gott Leap show here on Fox Sports Traded. Tom
Telesco is our guest, longtime general manager of the Chargers
and last year was the general manager of the Las
Vegas Raiders. Joins us for his weekly visit here on
Fox Sports Trade and the iHeart Radio app. Caleb Williams
struggles in an open scrimmage. Then there's the video of
him missing these are the little squares in the net
(19:36):
and throwing a little bit of a fit. This on
the back of what I think anybody would determine was
at times of disappointing rookie season, he's got Ben Jonson.
What's what's your thoughts on on Kayleb Williams a year ago?
Is dounebleling overall? Pick?
Speaker 6 (19:51):
Yeah, I mean nobody wants to hear it, but you
just have to have patients in this situation. To me,
he's essentially a rookie all over again because it's a
completely new coaching staff, new head coach, new coordinator, new offense.
There's gonna be different language, different verbiage. There's a lot
of new players on offense. So it's just spent takes
some time, and I know we all like.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
To look at short clips on.
Speaker 6 (20:14):
Social media and then try and you know, you know,
make the terminations of what you see. But I just
think there's going to be a process for this and
it's just going to take time. It's just not going
to happen overnight. It just doesn't for most players. So
they're just have to grow together. And that's kind of
where we are right now. We'll see how much he
plays in the preseason. I don't know if they've said anything.
(20:35):
You're not Doug, you may know, but you know, he
may need some work in the preseason just just just
running the offense. Ge need to plays in, getting it
plays out, making the change with the line of scrimmage.
But you know, I saw a good amount of Quilee
Williams out here on the West Coast, and there is
definite magic to his game and he'd never want to
take that away. Now it's just about trying to really
(20:57):
smooth out all the inconsistencies and you know, making the
routine plays. You know, the routine on time throws and
that's why they you head coaches in there, and that's
what we're gonna have to smooth out. Hopefully get the
work in the pre season, but even a month of September,
you're gonna see a lot of ups and downs. I
think with this team, I think the defense are going
to try and help keep them, keep them in some
games early as the offense tries to find their niche.
(21:21):
But it's gonna take some time.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
It definitely will take some time. Tom Tollusco is our
guest here Doug ot Leab Show, Fox Sports Radio. H
let me ask kind of the Browns situation. Right where
you got Flacko, I'm guessing he becomes the guy, and
then you got Dalan Gabriel, who they took higher than
people thought. Then they go and draft Shador Sanders. Uh,
(21:46):
you know, then you got a guy who's been a
starter in Pittsburgh as well as part of that force him.
What do you think in Kenny Pickett? What do you
think they do it quarterback?
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Well, Doug, I just agree with you.
Speaker 6 (21:59):
I just think with with Joe Flacco, they know what
they have, They trust them. He played a lot of
football he knows Thefanski well and there's definitely has to
be a comfort factor, and I just think he provides
all that for them, so to me, I think in
the end it will be him. I haven't been a
part of very many quarterback competitions. I was last year
(22:20):
with the Raiders with Aidan O'Connell and Gardner Minshew, but
I certainly I've never been part of one where he.
Speaker 2 (22:25):
Had four quarterbacks. It's hard.
Speaker 6 (22:28):
I mean, Kevin Stefanski is as smart as anyone in
the league.
Speaker 2 (22:30):
He's a great head coach.
Speaker 6 (22:31):
But that's a challenging situation to be in, and they're
handling it pretty well. I mean, I know there's only
so many snaps to have, but it seems like all
four guys are getting work and not necessarily always with
the ones. And certainly Gabriel and Sanders will.
Speaker 2 (22:44):
Play a lot in the preseasons. They'll get a good
look at them there.
Speaker 6 (22:48):
But I just take all signs point to Joe being
that starter, but fully knowing that the chances to him
playing every game all seventeen games this year are probably
not great either due to injury performance, So these other
guys have to be ready to go. We'll see who
the next one in is. You know, I don't know
how much Ticket's going to play in the preseasons he
has an injury. It doesn't seem like it's that significant.
(23:11):
But right now they've got to figure out who the
number two is, who's going to be the next man in,
And that's gonna be a lot determined, probably in the
preseason games.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
Yes, it will be Tom Telesco. Of course, Flora Joe
manager of the Chargers and the Raiders. He's joined us
in the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. Let
me circle back around to the Chiefs. I mean, there's
an organization. You know so well, last twelve years, you've
tried to build teams up to beat him. You had
some success with the Chargers. Is this the year that
(23:39):
people finally catch up to him?
Speaker 2 (23:42):
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (23:42):
I mean we used to say that all the time
about the Patriots, that eventually they're going to, you know,
come back to the norm, and they never really did.
They just kind of kept rolling along. And when you
have Andy Reid at the Chiefs, you know, he kind
of sense.
Speaker 2 (23:55):
The same thing.
Speaker 6 (23:55):
Andy Reids and Patrick Mahomes. It's the kind of the
same situation I thought, I mean a lot of really
smart moves in the offseason to kind of keep improving.
The offensive line was a weak spot last year at
the tackle spot, so they drafted Josh Simmons, and it
seems like he's coming along. We'll see more of him
in the preseason. He really just can't go based on
(24:17):
what you're you know, you're reading a practice. They really
need to see him playing some games. But at least
all indications look good. They still have weapons at receiver,
they're very fast on the outside, and you always have
Patrick Mahomes. And really the defense has been outstanding the
last three years, and it's really a younger defense. It's
really almost all drafted. I think, I mean had probably
(24:37):
ten nine or ten starters are draft picks on the
younger side that really haven't gone out and bought high
level for agents, which is a sign that you're drafting really,
really well. But you combine the defense, Despgnolo and Patrick Mahomes,
you know, I don't see them coming back. Its falling
back to the pack. There's still going to be a
tough out. But between them Buffalo Baltimore, I mean that
(25:01):
those are some really big time teams right, the best
three teams in AFC right now.
Speaker 1 (25:04):
Yeah, I don't know if you heard this. John Harbaugh
said that that Lamar Jackson is an incredible passer, that
his numbers are basically obscene, and he almost took offense
to the idea that he's got to improve his passing
or for them to get to the super Bowl. Issue
(25:25):
with it is, you got eight playoff games and what
was it like, fifteen to twelve touchdowns, interceptions to something
not great and you know they just they haven't gotten
there yet. But more than anything, thirty seven hundred yards.
I get that the numbers are going to come down
in the playoffs, but we do have half a season
of sample size that tell us that he's far more
(25:47):
normal as a quarterback in the regular in the postseason
as compared to the regular season. Where do you stand
on Lamar and where what he has to do to
help that team take that next step.
Speaker 6 (26:00):
It's hard to explain that the playoff numbers because I
can tell you as an opponent, he's just a nightmare
to play against because there's just no one more explosive
and fast as the quarterback. They can get out and run,
whether it's a designed to grind or a scramble, so
you always have to count for that. And he is
an accurate passer. I mean, he can really put balls
(26:21):
in tight spots. He uses the whole field and when
he does move, you know, if you're playing zones, so
you can see the quarterback and break on.
Speaker 2 (26:30):
Him a kiss. He scrambled.
Speaker 6 (26:32):
When he moves, all those zones they change.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
I mean just that.
Speaker 6 (26:36):
You know, you're a basketball coach, so you know how
I'm assuming ball movement in basketball can really stress the zone.
And that's what happens in football in the secondary. All
those zones get distorted and all of a sudden, you
get a big, big void and you've got you know,
Zay Flowers flying through and he can hit receivers. So
he's a nightmare of play against. Now, they've had a
couple of different offensive coordinators, I think this one sits
(26:58):
him really well. To me, it's just a matter of time.
I mean I was looking at their roster today. I'm
an NFL radio letter today, and they've got training camp
there and I mean there aren't very many week spots
at all on their roster, certainly on the starting side,
and maybe a little bit of death and death in
a couple of places, but they're loaded everywhere. So this
(27:19):
is the year, and you know, we'll see how they
get there, how they react in the playoffs. But you know,
like I said, from playing against LAMARW many times, you
still want to face them.
Speaker 1 (27:28):
Awesome stuff, Tom, Listen, We appreciate join us. Look forward
to talking with you more as we get ready for
the season. There's no there's no guest you can possibly
get who has more pertinent information considering what you've lived,
not just last thirty but specifically the last twelve years.

Yeah, sounds good, appreciate it.

Speaker 4 (28:31):
This is game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
Speaker 5 (28:38):
All right, Dog, The game today is.
Speaker 4 (28:41):
Big deal, little deal, no deal?
Speaker 1 (28:43):
All right?
Speaker 5 (28:44):
Starting out with this one and what is a three
part series of questions on this topic, big deal, little
deal or no deal? That Luka Doncic and the Lakers
agreed to a three year, one D and sixty five
million dollar extension.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
That's a big deal on a on a multitude of fronts.
First thing is it is not top dollar, right? Am
I right in saying that, Dan Byram I hear that
yesterday when I was driving around listen on the radio. Yes, right.
So it's one of those things where we just heard
Lebron James through his you could barely see the strings
(29:20):
moving when Ridge Paul was talking, right, say, hey, Lebron
wants playing a championship team. That's what's important to him.
Yet he signed for the most possible money. He didn't
have to stay were he actually didn't sign. He he
opted in to his player option of his contract, which
was fifty three point nine million dollars Luca when he
(29:41):
was traded, he gave away the chance. Because he was
traded he couldn't get a super max deal. His response
was not to take every last penny. It was to
take a little bit less. Again, I one would guess
with the idea in mind of putting better players around,
Lakers are really well positioned to clean the deck at
the end of next year and build a championship caliber team.
(30:03):
And he'll be in his mid twenties. So yeah, it's big.
It's not top dollar, it's con it's it's in contrast
to Lebron James. It's a very team friendly deal despite
the fact that it's near one hundred and fifty million
dollars worth three years.
Speaker 5 (30:16):
He can opt out in twenty twenty eight and then
he could sign a five year, four hundred and seventeen
million dollar deal as with the Lakers. That's what could
be next for Luca. All Right, next topic of conversation,
big deal, little deal or no deal that Lebron James
wasn't in the photo at the presser.
Speaker 1 (30:36):
Well, he wasn't at the presser, wasn't at the presser.
That's a big deal.
Speaker 5 (30:43):
And somebody gives it like, so, what's the difference? Is
this just an adding like a you know it not.
Speaker 1 (30:50):
Like he was like, oh he was back in the
back and he was talking to somebody. They took a
photo like, oh my bad. Right, Yeah, wasn't there. Sun
wasn't there. So top big guy in the roster, bottom
guy and the roster both not there. And you know
you're posting photos of golf. All those other dudes could
be there. You're in la. You just posted a video
(31:10):
working out from the Clippers old workout facility that that
clutch apparently is using. Yeah, it's a big deal. And
if it wasn't a big deal, why were you there
for Westbrooks? Why are you there for Anthony Davis's Why
have you been there for the other coaching changes? You're
not there for Luca don chicks. This is a lot
like you guys A remember when Harry met Sally that's
(31:30):
why you don't take anybody to the airport early in
the early relationship. Then she can't say, well, it's taking
to the airport anymore, all right. For Lebron James, if
it was a mistake, it was a mistake in going
to all those other press conferences to now we're like, hey,
why don't you go to Luca's press conference. I think
it's a big deal. It's a bad deal. Terrible look
if that's your team and you're supposedly trying to win
championships and you're selling, Like again, what is the what
(31:53):
are you saying to Brownie? You know, and what regards
this of what was meant by it, what was translated
was we're not happy, so we're pouting, so we're not
gonna shot up.
Speaker 5 (32:05):
I actually think it's this is all Lakers driven. And
the reason I say that, like they didn't call him, Yeah, well, Doug,
this is the Lakers. This is the team that is
showtime all the time. And I know there's new ownership
coming in. Who announces a contract extension and then you
have a press conference the same day on a Saturday, Like,
(32:27):
I think they purposely did this to kind of take
control and to show that this is Luca's team. Now
they announced the extension, they have a press are the
same day, so the players that are working out there
are the only ones who can show up for the photo.
Obviously Lebron isn't, but I felt that this was such
a Lakers motivated move to kind of respond to all
(32:48):
of Lebron's social media antics, to be like, Okay, well
we're going to take our future guy and we're gonna
immediately have a press conference afterwards. How many times have
we seen press conference coming up on Tuesday or Wednesday.
It was actually buried in the news cycle of a weekend,
which is kind of crazy. So I think this is
all Lakers orchestrated. That's just just very odd to me
(33:11):
that they would do that. I don't know if the
Spurs have a presser coming up later today to announce
Darren Daron Fox's extension, but I'm guessing probably not.
Speaker 1 (33:19):
I bet they do. I bet they do. Listen, I
you're you're right. But I'll also tell you that the
Lakers have done this over each of the last off seasons,
new coach, new player, new contract. They've absolutely done it,
absolutely done.
Speaker 5 (33:35):
On the same day on a Saturday. Like I think
that that that what I'm saying is that they shoehorned
this in. And this is the Lakers team that loves
the pomp and circumstance of everything. Sure, so you're not
going to celebrate you're not going to take four days,
because what happens is if you wait till Tuesday or
Wednesday to do this and Lebron doesn't show up, then
(33:57):
it's what you're saying that Lebron, it's a bad look
at on Lebron. What I think the Lakers wanted was
we're gonna do this without you, Lebron. This is our direction,
this is where we're moving, and we're going full steam ahead. Luca,
you're the face of the franchise. You're going to have
your day. Like I don't think there was any way
that Lebron could have attended this this thing if he
(34:18):
had gotten any sort of heads up. It's just really
weird because this is all done on Saturday, and the
news broke on Saturday. Anyway, big deal, little dealer, no deal.
That the members of the Lakers, including Luco, went to
Vegas to celebrate and see the Backstreet Boys at the sphere.
Speaker 1 (34:37):
Also a big deal because also Lebron wasn't there, Right,
it's san guy. Anyway, It's impossible not to and Polinka
went with him. It's impossible not to impossible not to
make it a big deal, big.
Speaker 5 (34:53):
Deal, big deal, little dealer, No deal that the Colts
are listing both Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson as their
first team arterbacks on their depth chart.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
Yeah, it's a big deal when you have two quarterbacks
you don't have one, right and that the old thing?
Speaker 5 (35:09):
Yes, I think they're trying to make Anthony Richardson feel good.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (35:13):
Finally, Doug, big deal, little deal and no deal that
Shador Sanders misspracticed this weekend with a sore shoulder. He
did return to practice today, but at a source shoulder
over the weekend. Is that a big deal, little deal
or no deal?
Speaker 1 (35:24):
Was it this shoulder?
Speaker 2 (35:27):
Yeah? Right?
Speaker 1 (35:29):
I can see the video right when if you if
you're on the YouTube channel, you could see this. Is
it that I'm doing? The Shador Sanders holding up the
watch thing? Is it that shoulder?
Speaker 5 (35:40):
Finally, Doug, big deal, little deal or no deal? That
the Little League World Series regional games are aired on TV.
This isn't new, but they're going on right now? Do
you like these before? Williamsports?
Speaker 1 (35:49):
It's a little deal, but it's ultimately going to become
a big deal. The Girls Softball World Series was on
there too, Yeah.
Speaker 5 (35:57):
Right right now, Oklahoma and Texas East are playing in
a Southwest Southwest Region elimination game.
Speaker 1 (36:04):
Yeah. Yeah, there's some controversy over at one the Oklahoma
game yesterday, and that is game time. Game.
Speaker 4 (36:13):
This is game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
Speaker 1 (36:17):
Upcates, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, Dan Jase too, Sam,
