Doug Gottlieb is live from Torrey Pines in San Diego California for the Farmers Insurance Open where he goes over the return of Tiger Woods and what to expect in his first tournament of 2018. Also, Doug calls out Kevin Durant for becoming a fake tough guy, something Durant has called out other NBA players for in the past. Doug backs those being critical of LeBron James because he is held to a high standard. David Hearn, Harris English, Geoff Ogilvy and Tyrone Aswegen join the show live from Torrey Pines.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
The results are in a survey of inc. Five thousand
companies shows the top barriers to growth. It's taking finance
too long to close the books, so slow to launch
new products. We need to hire good people and keep them.
Too many disconnected systems. I can't see what's happening in
my business. Sounds like they've outgrown their business and financial
management systems. Quick books and spreadsheets worked fine at the start,

(00:22):
but now it takes twice the effort to get things
done and you can't get accurate answers. You should know
the number one system for growing companies, net Suite from Oracle.
Net Suite is the one system that tracks and manages revenue,
cash flow, hr, inventory projects, even e commerce for every industry.
Now you can run your business from a dashboard on

(00:44):
your phone. That's why thousands of companies use NetSuite. It's
the only system you need to run your business. Go
to NetSuite dot com slash fast to get your free
guide called Crushing the five Barriers to Growth. That's NetSuite
dot Com slash Fast. You're listening to Fox Sports Boom,
What Up America, Dout Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio broadcasting

(01:08):
live from the Farmer's Insurance open and Tory Pines, Lahoya, Santiago,
California and wherever you're listening to the show. A right,
So unless you're listening to the show in southern California. UM,
here's how I would describe today. If you could pick

(01:31):
the greatest weather you have ever seen in your life, okay,
and the prettiest setting you have ever been to in
your life, multiply them by three, and that's the day
we have at Tory Pines. I swear to I kid
you not, it is that nice like it has. It

(01:51):
doesn't have the perfect crystal blue sky and said, it
has those whispy sky things going. It is not hot,
it is not cold, it is not breezy, but the
air is not stale. I mean it is utter and
sheer perfection to anybody who goes, why would you do California?
The taxes and schools, and then you get off the
plane and you come to Tory Binds like, oh, okay, okay.

(02:16):
As I described to a really nice lady who was
in from the Twin Cities who said, we don't have
seasons in southern California, I said, that is not true.
We just cut out all the seasons that nobody likes.
That's it. There are seasons anyway. Tiger Woods just walked
past here, Ryan Music, no uh, no commandeering skills. Ricky
Faller just walked past here. And there's a different vibe,

(02:39):
a different buzz. There's just a completely different feel to
the Farmer's Insurance open because Eldert Tiger Woods is back.
It's just different now. Part of what he's created is
part of what's happening with Lebron James. There there is,
in fact a parallel because everybody is viewed in a
different lens. And while there's some sort of strife between

(03:03):
Kawhi Leonard and the San Antonio Spurs, and I could
easily make the case that none do I believe, but
many people in the NBA believe he's the third best
player in the NBA. Kawhi Leonard does not carry the cash,
does not have the responsibility. There aren't the expectations of
overall leadership and franchise greatness as there is on Lebron James.
And when you see that friend, they took on the

(03:26):
San Antonio Spurs and half the Spurs didn't even play
last night. And you couldn't if I I would bet
most people could not name the San Antonio Spurs starting
lineup last night. It's crazy. And yet once again the
Spurs once again, the Calves lost and um just like

(03:49):
I think that the criticism of Tiger and we all
point to the back, but remember he had the yips
in his short game before he had the multiple surgeries
on his back, something Tiger Woods used to also be
the best six ft in putter on the tour that
seemed to have left him. So there's a lot of
things that that we don't talk about with Tiger because

(04:09):
of because of the back. But the fact is that
we started to when it was happening. We were picking
apart the little things that he wasn't doing well because
he's Tiger Woods and because he's held to a different
standard that the same is true with Lebron James. I mean,
this is this is a joke you can't have. It's
one thing to have one player's only meeting. It's the
second thing to have a heated, second players only meeting.

(04:33):
Call out teammates, you're the only one not named, meaning
your guys, or you are leaking into the press. And
then it wasn't just that they lost to San Antonio
last night. It's that they one lost to San Antonio's
backups last night, and two if you watch, the effort
just wasn't there. You would have thought that after being
embarrassed yet again, they would come out with their hair
on fire. Kyle Anderson does, John Murray, Um, burtens LaMarcus

(05:07):
Aldrich and Danny Green. That was the starting lineup for
the San Antonio Spurs. I mean, don't even get in now.
Like Tony Parker, Patty Mills, Brent Forbes off the bench,
most of you couldn't name half of the San Antonio Spurs.

(05:28):
And they went and beat the Cleveland Cavaliers and the
Calves lost again, and we could say, well every January,
it doesn't It's not this bad. There is not this
much per finger pointing. There is not this much kind
of searching. Desperate, desperate need to find some sort of
replacement or defensive help. But one guy is not going
to fix the defense. Let's get DeAndre Jordan. That will

(05:49):
fix everything. Can he block every shot and think about
how it changes there? I think it changes their offense.
Uh boy, this thing was not well put to other
It is bigger because it is Lebron. The expectations are
higher because he's been to what seventh straight NBA Finals,
and just like Tiger Woods, there's a different buzz around

(06:11):
him than there is a buzz around anybody else in
his sport, And so we pay more attention to a
midweek game in which you played the San Antonio Spurs,
even though the Spurs don't play half of their players. Alright,
So Tiger played out in the ProAm relate today, Right,
he's already done. He was. He had the tea time
before ours, didn't he He had the six five tea time.

(06:33):
We had the seven ten tea time. So it wasn't
directly before ours. But Ricky over here on the Ricky
Fowler on the practice screen. Alright, Coming up next, we're
gonna get to what we saw from Tiger, our reaction
to it, our expectations to it. We still have some

(06:53):
Brady retirement talk. We got real news, fake news. I
don't know if you saw. Kevin Durant got ejected again,
Paul George not an all star. Russell Westbrook had something
interesting to say about that. I got a ton of
things to get to today. Plus, oh yeah, there's the
super Bowl upcoming in a week and a half in
the Twin Cities. It's gonna be a weird super Bowl,

(07:15):
right of the weird super Bowls that we've been to,
having a super Bowl in New York. They just missed
the weather, but it wasn't much buzz to it, and
it was a cold weather super Bowl. But that super
Bowl reminds me of this one. You know what happens
is when you're in sports and when people know your
radio show, everyone asked you, how what do you think
about the big Game? And I'm gonna tell you now,
I'm gonna get I'm I'm gonna give away what we're

(07:38):
gonna be talking about leading up the Super Bowl. A
couple years ago, the Super Bowl was was in New York,
and I remember when I was broadcasting this show live
from New York and everybody was talking about Peyton Manning
winning another title and adding to his legacy, and I said,
wait a second. The team on the other side of
this was the Seattle Seahawks. Don't they have a dominant defense.

(07:58):
Isn't it one of the best defenses you've seen maybe
in the last twenty years. Wasn't it the most dominant
defense in the National Football league in that season, and
the answer across the board is yes, that's what the
Philadelphia Eagles are thrown out there, and this one feels
it doesn't even feel like an upset because Folds, though
he is a backup and look shaky early on, the

(08:19):
truth is that Fols could be a starter for maybe
a quarter of the teams in the league. He is
not the traditional backup. He is not what Minnesota was
throwing out there. Nick Foles was a starting quarterback who
was traded for multiple picks and lost his job and
then got another shot behind Carson Wentzon. Is playing for
a quarterback, Guru, Fols is better than Blake Bordles, better

(08:41):
than Tyrod Taylor. He's better than anything Cleveland throughout there
this year. Let's just be like, I'm not sitting here
gonna convince you that Nick Foles is a really good quarterback,
like a top fifteen quarterback, but he is not a
bottom five or true backup in the essence of the word.
So I'm I'm just setting the table to tell you

(09:01):
that the assumption that the Patriots, because they're the Patriots,
you play with fire, playing with fire, you know the
team that we've seen them, we saw them fall behind
by tender Jacksonville, and this team is much better than Jacksonville.
We've seen teams in the Super Bowl. The New York
Giants forced Tom Brady off his spot with a four

(09:22):
three defense where you're not we're not sending people, and
that's what Jim Schwartz is gonna do. A upcoming next
on The Doug Gottlip Show, we'll get to what we
saw from Tiger Woods. Fox Sports Radio is broadcasting live
from the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego. Eldrick Tiger
Woods back on the course, back in the place in

(09:42):
which he won his last major. Howdy look we discussed Next,

(10:04):
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio broadcasting live from the
Farmer's Insurance Open in beautiful San Diego, California. UM. If
you go to ESPN dot com, they have a Tiger
Woods injury timeline and it's really a remarkable one. And
there's injuries to which I either had forgotten or didn't

(10:25):
know they actually existed. His injuries go all the way
back to December of ninety four, coming off what's believed
to be the biggest comeback in us A history. In August,
Tiger Woods was eighteen. He had two benign tumors and
scar tissue removed from his left nee. Did you guys
know that existed? I didn't. In two thousand twelve, that's

(10:47):
eight years later he would have assists removed. He was
twenty six years old, removed a benign cyst from his
left knee. Fluid drained from around one of his ligaments.
Right after surgery, came back to win the Buick Invitational
on OH three. Uh in OH six he had a
shoulder problem. He had an injured muscle on his left

(11:10):
shoulder blade. He in OH seven, playing here at Tory Pines,
he had he ruptured anterior cruisehit ligment in his left knee.
Deciding against surgery, he pushed through to win five of
the next six events. Then he had knee surgery and
OH eight, after finishing second the Masters, he had his

(11:33):
scope to clean out his knee. Then he had an
a c L repair in two thousand eight. Then he
had a torny car kill He's tendant at the exact
same time. That was all when he wore in Tory Pines,
torn achilles tendant and a torn a c L. I mean,
it's really remarkable. He had a neck injury, he had

(11:56):
an MCL sprain and an achilles sprain. He had a
knee and achilles problem. He had a left to kill
his tendon problem. Back issues in two thousand fourteen, back
spasms in late two thousand fourteen, back surgery in two
thousand fourteen, another back surgery in two thousand fifteen, a
back procedure which is a nice word for a surgery
in two thousand fifteen. Back spasms in two thousand seventeen.

(12:18):
Another back surgery in two thousand seventeen. Like, I don't know,
Frankenstein's two data a reference for kids these days, right,
But you know Frankenstein was a monster kind of stitched together, right,
stitch together. That's kind of what it feels like Tiger
Woods is. And yet I've never sold the stock. I

(12:39):
just haven't one, because dude, there's nine year old dudes
that can play golf, right, it just is you know,
you feel like there's two things in this world. You
can never be never to be too drunk to fish,
and never be too old to play golf. And we
have seen older golfers in the past win majors. Now
maybe the only one on one off jack winning at
forty six years old may your but uh, there are

(13:02):
plenty of age defying creams and age defying bodies in
comparison to what we used to see. Perfect example was
Tom Brady. If it's not a sport of speed or
position of speed and athleticism and you need flexibility, guile
poisoned Tiger still has that. So how do you look today?
Kind of look like Tiger Woods and the fact that

(13:26):
he's still finishing rounds, I mean those are winds and up.
You always feel like if he can just finish around
and if the chipping yips have gone away, boy, Tiger
Woods is somebody who's gonna be there at Augusta. You
go back and look after the car accident and the
whatever Ellen did to the car window and she smacked

(13:46):
him around or whatever after she caught him with some women.
Even after that, he finished fourth at the Map Masters fourth.
He could play that course with blindfolded and finishing the
top ten? Yes, music, So what is it from Tiger
Woods now at the point in his career trying to
do this? I guess you could say, come back, what
is it that you actually need to see from him?

(14:08):
Is it just get through around? Is that where we've
now set the bar for what could be considered the
greatest golfer ever? No? Well, look, first you have to
get through a tournament, right, which he did once already?
Can you get through a can you make a cut
and get through a legit tournament? And this is a
legit tournament, and this is a course in which he's
won and played well that before, so you would expect
him to play relatively well. Right. Just it's like if

(14:30):
he goes and plays out in Firestone, you would if
if he's not finishing at least in the top ten,
if not top five Firestone, he's not on that leaderboard
on Sunday here, then he's far from ready to compete
as he as he thinks he would be. But isn't
that interesting to consider? Because you think of Tiger Woods,
you can compare him to like Lebron James or like
a Tom Brady, and that's like saying, oh, you know,

(14:51):
maybe just Lebron just needs to get through the regular season.
Like if he could play a majority of the eighty
two games and he just gets through the regular season,
then that's a way. But Lebron has any injuries like
like the like you have a you have you have
two back surgeries, you have fused discs in your back
in a and in any sport, let alone in golf
where you're putting massive amounts of torque and twist on

(15:14):
your back. I think it's it's a different scale, you know,
it's a different scale. So yeah, um, you're just waiting
to see if he can get through it. It's like
somebody who's coming out of rehab. Can they just can
they get through the first week of not touching the
sauce right? Then? Can they get through the holiday season
and not get depressed and lead them to drinking? Like
this is completely different. We have not seen this level

(15:36):
of combat. We've seen guys come back from tour knees,
We've seen guys come back from individual injuries, but just
a litany of injuries where his body has broken down.
In addition to the fact that his game since two
thousand thirteen, when people forget he was the best player
on the tour. You didn't win any majors, but he
won more events than anybody else. The first step is
making a cut at a legit tournament. Second step is

(15:57):
making a cut and competing and getting through four days
and then once then when we see him on Sunday
on the leaderboards in the events that he placed in,
how many events does he play? And remember, he's gone
from uh, you know, you go back to when he
was at his peak Tiger and he would pick and
choose events that were his that that were his events,

(16:18):
or events which already ran, events that he had a
personal tie in or placed the one. But he wouldn't
play a full schedule. And you go back a couple
of years ago, and he was trying to play every
little pid the event possible for those competitive juices to
kind of figure his game, figures new game out. How
does he handle his schedule? This ship has a lot
of interesting parts to it before we ever get to Augusta,
before we ever get to the other three majors and

(16:38):
see if he can compat So what do you think
he's really struggling with the most in terms of is
it just he's worried about if his body's gonna hold up.
Or do you think he's really trying to refine his
technique now, because I think at this point, I feel
like he's not even focused as much on his game
as much as he's just like, I hope my back
doesn't give out again. Well supposedly swing in which he's

(17:01):
developed now, I've I've been told that, you know, if
you rehab correctly of these back surgeries, and he's even
told people, I wish I would have had this done
five ten years ago. Um that that'll hold for you know,
five ten years, and then I'll probably have to have
you know, something else done or whatever. But this is
it's not a temporary fix. On the other hand, you
have to change your swing with age, just like any sport.

(17:24):
You know. It's like we talked about with Dez Brian,
how he has to change how he plays wide receiver
at this point in his career. Can he mirror that
of a Kwan Bolden and Larry fit Sheild the same
thing for Tiger Woods. And remember he's not working with
a swing coach anymore. This is just Tiger trying to
fix Tiger. So there's there's a lot to it. So
and and look, there's something called game slippage, where it
doesn't matter how much he plays with his guys, or

(17:45):
how many rounds he plays, or how many events he's won.
We don't know if he has swing, his new swing
will hold up under pressure. We don't know if his
chipping will hold up under pressure. But we can't get
to any of that if he doesn't first make a
cut and finished four days at an event and feel
good about his body. But isn't it Also it feels
like golf has changed a lot, just from the time

(18:06):
that he has sort of dealt with all of these
injuries to where it is now. And it's only been
a few years. Like when Tiger was first on the
scene and the best golfer in the world, he was
known for being that long driver and no one could
really compete with that. Now you have guys like Dustin
Johnson who could probably out drive Tiger even when he
was in his prime. So we talk about you have
a bunch of big hitters. I mean, look, look what

(18:27):
Tiger has done is uh, this is no different than
anywhere in business. Right, Like I don't know if Chippotle
was the first, right but like you had Chippotle and
then they had Chippotle and Kudoba Chippotle Kudoba and uh,
there's there's one other one that's just like that, right.
That's well, it's like it's also like the build yourum,
welcome to mos right what Mos? Have you ever been
to mos? Look at mose right now there's like a

(18:49):
competitive and and the the Chipotle style of serving people,
which is really goes back to how Subway used to
do it back in the day. Um, where you walk up,
it's not ask food you ordered, it's made kind of
to order, but it's made kind of quickly, like like
everybody copied that. That's what Tiger Woods is. If you
ask all of these young golfers any you know, Ricky

(19:09):
and all these young guys, and Rickie is not super
young anymore, but still the young up and comers, they
will all tell you that they started playing golf because
Tiger Man cool play golf, right, so um and and
and there's and and this kind of mirrors baseball. There
is so much young talent on the tour that it's

(19:31):
that's why these guys struggled to put together back to
back wins or crazy seasons where you know, the best golfers.
Uh where where Rory can't have, you know, five wins
in a year. Because there are so many young golfers,
Tiger has created a very difficult field to go against.
All that said, they can say that they don't they're
not scared of Tiger anymore, right, But if he's the

(19:53):
top of leader board on a Sunday, it's still Tiger Woods.
It's a different crowd, it's a different feel. Ask anybody
who's here, what's it like this year is opposed to
last year? What's any event like when Tigers they're opposedly
he's not there. Uh, the change is real. The change
is absolutely positively tangible. Does anyone carry a sport quite
like that? Though? Like does Lebron carry the NBA quite

(20:16):
like Jans Jordan's kind of did at the end of
his run. Um Lebron doesn't because you have the Warriors,
but Lebron. If it's not Lebron and the Warriors, you'd
see if those numbers would would suffer. I even feel
like if it wasn't Lebron, I mean, people already think
that it's gonna be the Warriors are taking the finals.

(20:37):
There there's at least a little bit of hope, hell
doubt that the Calves can somehow figure it out, and
Lebron James still may be the best player in the world.
But if you take Lebron out of the equation, how
many people are really tuning in to watch the Warriors
sweep their way to another title um this year? Probably
not a lot, No, But you you asked if one
guy carries any other sport and the answer is probably not.

(20:58):
Probably not. And again, and like the the issue they've
run into is like, you know, you've got all these
You've got these young dudes that are really really good
and and good personalities too, but they just not have
not been able to break through, and probably they won't be.
You know, the Tiger thing is a lot like we
started to talk about. Remember the show Friends. I make

(21:20):
the case that Friends, there will never be another sitcom
like Friends ever because nobody appointment watches. You know, you
may appointment watch Game of Thrones, right, but again, that
one that's an HBO show. You'll never have an over
the air show like Friends because nobody in that target
demo that Friends used to hit from eighteen to forty

(21:41):
years old watches Network TV on a Thursday night anymore.
You're never going to have another Tiger Woods because before
Tiger golf was kind of stale, right, The clothing was stale,
the names were stale. You felt like it was an
old white dude's country club sport. And he made it
cool and all these other young guys have have have

(22:01):
kind of followed suit. You're not gonna have another guy
breakthrough to the level the level of Tiger Woods because
the timing. Just as such, golf has already kind of
crossed over into more of a mainstream sport because of
Tiger Woods. Um, the Dug Gotland shows broadcasting live from
the Farmers Insurance Open at Torry Pines in San Diego.

(22:24):
We are Farmers dumb DoD dum du dumb du dump.
Thanks Rob must appreciate that. Awesome. Uh, let's catch up
with David Gascon find out what else is going on
the world of sports stable what he got for me?
A whole lot. In the National Football League, Pittsburgh Steelers
and Levy on Bell are making some progress towards a
new deal. He says he's not gonna retire, not retiring,
no rapping, not just yet full time Anyways, he says

(22:46):
he's a lot closer this year than he was last year,
for whatever that may mean. UH Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam
Newton was diagnosed with ligament and cartilage damage in his
deed during the team's wild car last loss at New Orleans.
Rams of higher Jeff Fish as senior offensive assistant college football,
Utah State is hiring former a s U defensive Cordner

(23:06):
Keith Patterson as its new defensive coordinator, and the NBA
couple of notes there Jimmy Butler's doubtful tonight for Minnesota
and Tom Thibodeau did say that Jamal Crawford is feeling
better but probably will not play a night against the
Portland Trailblazers Grizzlies. Tyreek Evans is questionable tonight against the
San Antonio Spurs, and Rodney Hood is out tonight for
the Utah Jazz and Major League Baseball Tampa Bay Rays

(23:29):
ace Chris Archer told Tampa Bay Times that he does
not expect to be traded before the start of the season,
and John Morosi's report that you darbish is like with
a sign with a team at some point this week.
As we all know, former USA Gymnastics. In Michigan State,
doctor Larry Nasser was sentenced today from forty d seventy
five years in prison for sexual abuse. Just an awful story.

(23:54):
And I think the big question with Michigan State is
will the n c A get involved like they got
involved with what the with with Pence with the Penn
State thing. They did actually tweet something out earlier today
about that. They sent out an ink word to Michigan
State about some improprieties and wrongdoing. So there's a a
general inquiry so far, and take that for whatever it's worth. Look,
it's I mean, it's a it's a terrible story. And uh,

(24:17):
you know, thankfully though some of those women, those women
were brave enough to come forward and to put this
monster in jail for the rest of his his natural,
natural life. Fox Sports Radios broadcasting live from the Farmer's
Insurance Open in San Diego, US. Doug Gottlieb show I
described today as if you could whatever your snapshot is
of perfect weather, whatever your snapshot is of perfect location,

(24:39):
multiplied by three, that's what you have in in Torrey Pines, California.
It is. It is that perfect. It was a little
chilly this morning. But now it's perfect and maybe a
little breezy this morning, but it's you don't want the
air to not move at all. It is it is literally,
not figuratively, literally the perfect weather, the perfect setting to
welcome Tiger Woods, uh to the golfing world, of course,

(25:02):
and Mike Glinton joining us, who is the chief marketing
officer for Farmers Group Incorporated. And Mike, I gotta ask, like,
how much cache how much has it changed this tournament
when Tiger Woods is bad? Well, first I will say
everything is said about the course is absolutely true, and
it is. This is uh, my seventh one of these
is beautiful today and it's supposed to be beautiful week

(25:22):
when when Tiger plays, everything probably gets more attention. I mean,
you meeting folks happen to actually probably get more attention
to it. So we think we've got a great lineup.
Tiger adds to that, you know when it's seven times.
So we're excited that he's here. We're excited for the field,
We're very excited for the attorney and as you know,
we we've up to our commitment to the tourney. Although

(25:43):
it's it's the Farmer's stuff is everywhere and the tournament
has an amazing field, and you mentioned the course. Um,
you know there's the North. The South course obviously is
the one they play more of the tournament on Saturday
and Sunday playing in the South course. Uh, Thursday and
Friday alternate North versus South. The North actually has a
couple of holes which I think are the most picturesque. Now,

(26:04):
have you played the course yet? I have not played
the course yet, but I know that they have made
the course even a little more difficult this year. And uh,
but it is a beautiful walk as well. It is
crazy to watch the pros. It's it's it's insane to
watch them hit golf balls. It's like somebody can try
and do here. I've been trying to hit. They're like
in that generary no, like that spot, and then it

(26:26):
just they hit. They hit a golf poy, like what
is what is in your club? I don't understand. That
just exploded and it didn't seem like you swung that hard. Meanwhile,
I'm sitting there swinging coming out of my shoes and
the sucker is you know, duck hooking and spraying to
the right most times off the tea. It's pretty spectacular
to watch. UM you mentioned the recommitment or and the

(26:46):
further commitment from from from you guys at Farmers. I
think it's it's it's fascinating, Uh, the tie between UM,
your company, and this event and how they're kind of
one and synonymous us with each other, right, and that
so many so many other times we've seen rotating sponsors
in different names. But when you say the Farmers Open

(27:08):
Farmers Invitational, uh, Insurance Invitational, you know exactly where you're going.
But gosh, thanks for that is Uh. You know, we
picked it up in two thousand and ten with about
ten days notice, and UH take that. We've gotten better
and better at it every year. And uh, you know
in our advertising we say, uh, we know a thing
or two because we've seen a thing or two and

(27:30):
now we've seen you know, eight of thesis will be
our ninth and and our thing will be we've probably
seen enough that we could sign up for seven year commitment.
What's the guy's name on the commercials? What's this? What's
the perfect character? Nathaniel Burke played by j K Simmons. Uh,
he's awesome, He's so Now did you personally select j
K Simmons, or did somebody he was he was when
I out there, and uh, you know, all I did

(27:52):
was okay, did I did the whole thing? I wrote
the jingle myself. Yea, all that wasn't me who wrote
the jingle. There's a group of folks who wrote the
jingle a long time ago. I don't even know exactly
who this are. You have to have the jingle story.
Everybody has to have a story. That's what you do
when you walk a golf course, like, all right, go ahead,
tell me your life, you know what next year, next year,

(28:12):
or bring the whole jingle story to you not you know,
it's one of the few remaining jingles. Like when we
were kids, everybody had a jingle. It is doing really well.
I'm trying to I'm trying to think of all the
different all the different jingles there were, right there was
no I think you should just think of our jingle. Okay.
What I'm saying is your jingle has stood the test
of time and so many others have not. Oh thank you.

(28:33):
We like we like it. It works a lot, we
get you know, But somebody out there is there's Charles
how the third who's he's a good Oklahoma State. Lum.
He and my wife are both pie five smokalm State. Um,
so good game against Oklahoma this week. Thanks? Yeah, I
mean they won the game too. They won the game.
They held Trey Young to forty eight points and that

(28:55):
really clamped down really really they take him thirty nine
shots to get it. Oklahoma one last night at home
against Kansas cyclhom State lost last night against Texas Tech.
That's okay, but the big thing is you beat the
Sooners going back to the UH to Saturday night. Um.
I gotta tell you one thing to watch for an
advertising today though. All Right, We're releasing a new commercial

(29:16):
today with Ricky Fowler or a brand Ambassard and J K.
Simmons called turf Napping, which is about the turf of
a golf course or not a golfing, but golf like
turf disappearing. So that is released today. We always doesn't
doesn't have less miles coming and eating the turf that
it does not have any college football coaches. Okay, now,

(29:37):
Ricky you know also an Oklahoma State guy. Now he
is famous for when he comes back to town, people like, hey,
do you want to stay at this hotel? You wants
day this hotel and he goes and crashes on some
golfers couch. You know that, right, Yes? I do? Yeah,
like he is he is. That's kind of among my
idol and that he's despite the fact he has more
money than God now, he still is low budget when
he comes to town, Like, no, I much rather crash

(29:57):
than somebody's couch and buy you guys lunch for lett
me do. So it's kind of that's I think he's
got a lot of chrismae. He gives back to the community,
is still grounded, ground as a real guy. Do you
like the orange that he wears on Sundays? Are you
okay with that? We do? But it's that Farmers colors.
Farmers are red, white and blue. They're Americana. You're you're
cool with that. We want Ricky to be Ricky, Yeah, yeah,
and we're glad he's our brand ambassador. And the other thing,

(30:18):
when Rickie's were in orange and the last day, he's
usually in the lead or challenging for the lead. So
I am all for orange. Also. It's also very true man,
when he won the Players a couple of years ago,
that was such it was such a great event. Of course,
taking down Sergio uh in Orlando. Will see if he's
competitive this week. All right, Um, so you stay in
the whole. You see the thing the whole time you're

(30:40):
gonna be in the tent will be blood alcohol level
will be at at a at a level to which
you have to uber anywhere you go off site. I
will not be offside very much, you know. I try
and do what you you folks like you need me
to do. Be available, talk about stuff, and talk about stuff. Yeah.
We got a great team that runs Attorney by the way,
some of them in and over there and uh, you know,

(31:01):
and then we look for what we're gonna do better.
The other thing we do all week is we do
a lot of charity work, like what like we did
uh first tea. Uh the other day we did blessings
in a backpack stuffing this morning. We're also doing disaster
preparedness this year in in while across the country you
saw it maybe across the world, a lot of disasters,

(31:22):
a little bit of fires, a little bit of hurricane
sometimes just sometimes just a tweet that goes out early
on a Saturday morning that we're all gonna die in
Hawaii that lasts about I don't know sixty minutes and
then pers apparently we're not all gonna die. Sorry, sorry,
I hit the wrong button. My bad, my bad dog.
We wish that would have been the case for the
fires in North col and Okay or and they're just

(31:45):
now opening back up the one oh one. Nonetheless, the
great folks of farmers have had us out. Uh, they
know a thing or two because they've seen a thing
or two, and Mike Linton kind of to join us
and tell us about the things you will see that
I will tell you this when you walk around the grounds. Um,
one of I think part of it is San Diego
and Tori and and how well run the event is.

(32:06):
And obviously then it's just kind of the big, first
big golf event of the year. But there are people
from all over the country here, you know, not just
not just farmers folks, but people who are coming and
excited about golf being back. It's really kind of like
a United Nations of people coming in for this event. Obviously,
I think the course and the field cells itself, so
it should be a great weekend. We really appreciate you
letting us be a part of it, alright, Mike Lynn,

(32:29):
of course, the chief marketing officer from Farmers Group joined
us The Doug Otlip Show, broadcasting live from Farmers Insurance
Open at Tory Pines. We are. I still have no
idea who wrote that. There's somebody out there going like
I wrote that. David Lytton. I wrote the thing and
you won't give recruited. I'll take the heat. Yeah, some guy.
He wants it on his he wants it on his tombstone.

(32:50):
I wrote the farmer's jingle. The Dallas Cowboys are looking
for the excuse me, the cowboys looking for a new
head coach. Real news are fake news. I'll tell you next.
The Doug Godlip Show is broadcasting live from the Farmers

(33:12):
Farmers Doug Gotlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio from the Farmers
Insurance Open. Let's get after a game bag. This is
game time side on the Doug Gottlieb Show. As conditions

(33:34):
on the field chain soaking your insurance needs. Talk with
the Farmers agent today so you can assess with your policies.
Game ready, find an agent at Farmers dot com. Are
farmers of course? Did you uh? Did you uh? Did
you finish all a team? Yes? Yes, wrapped it up

(33:54):
with a one put up and down par on eighteen. Yes.
We no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Golf, golf, golf, golf,
clop golf clubs. What there was. Of course, I chunked
my second shot out of the luf, so I was
about sixty yards. Then uh got up and down from

(34:14):
there and I don't know if it if it interfered,
but the roar from eighteen when it went in was
pretty amazing. So it was a lot of fun out there.
But we've got other games to play, like one of
the nicest days of any year in any location on Earth. Yes,
here's the thing, and I want to just say this
and we'll get to we'll get to more of the golf.

(34:35):
But you know, you're do dougs and athletes and it
was a It was pretty impressive to see Doug. Literally
somebody gave him two clubs during the round because he missed.
You had you were missing what three clubs or you
didn't have like a seven iron. What happened is I
I like to hit my seven iron five wood, and

(34:57):
I can't remember what other club. And with my son,
he'll he'll go take his clubs and we'll go to
the driving range, right, So I just like take two
or three clubs with me. So then I look at
my bag and like, oh my god, I didn't have
a seven hour, which is my favorite, which anybody's favorite club,
right anyway, go ahead, No, but to see him adjust
and then it took him like three holes and the
next thing you know, it was which So it was good.

(35:17):
I was in bad shape. I was. It was one
of those things to which I'm sure our pro was
was sitting there going this is this is? They got
to this every week? Yeah, we just blended. All right,
let's what's the game today? The game is rank? Okay, rank, um,
you may want to write these five names down because
we're going to rank the All Star snubs. Yes, these

(35:39):
NBA players did not make the All Star Game that's
gonna be played in Los Angeles next month. What from
let's do uh like fifth being the not bad snub,
one being like, oh my goodness that that was awful.
These five players Paul George Lou Williams Andre Drummond, Chris Paul,
Kemba Walker. Let's rank those snubs for the All Star

(36:01):
I would say, okay, now I have a different feel
for for All Stars, Okay, and I'll I'll explain after
the rankings. Paul George one, Chris Paul too? Who are
the other three? Kemba Walker and Chris Paul Um? Who
did you have to Chris Paul, Andre Drummond, Kemba Walker

(36:22):
and Lou Williams Um probably uh Lou Williams three, Andre
Drummond four? And then who is the other one, Kemba
Walker five? Am I thinking behind? So here's my thinking. Look,
there's three parts that play into whether or not you
should be an All Star. Okay. The first is are

(36:42):
you playing this year? Right? Like? It is important? But
it is not. It is not the most important thing.
It's a factor. You're not deciding if somebody's an All
Star based upon the first fifty games of the forty
five games of the year. I think that's flawed. Um,
if you know, how have you done since the last
All Star Game? And this is the same in baseball,
So now you have a whole count here you you

(37:04):
can you combine last year's second half of the season
and this year's first half of season. And then are
you and like, do you get a bit of a
pass if you're a perennial All Star if you're Chris
Paul right, Like to me, like Chris Paul is an
All Star. He hasn't been playing enough games to have
an All Star like first half of the season. But
he absolutely had an all star second half of the

(37:25):
season last year. But he is an All Star far
more than Lou Williams, who is a career bench player
but having a career year this year. Okay, Kemba Walker,
I have his fifth because at his best he's a
borderline All Star. The truth is right now, he's the
leading scorer on a bad team looking to trade, So
I I give you no credit for being a leading
to school on a bad team. Sorry, um and Andre

(37:49):
Drummond again, same thing, one of the best players on
a bad team. And like, we can't just have to
have big guys on all star teams when the NBA
has gone away from big guys. Here's my with Lou
Williams because he's in that category of heal with Lou Williams,
he may not make it back to another one, And
I just think that that I understand when you look

(38:10):
you're looking at Chris Paul is always going to be
in the conversation. Andre Drummond probably front court in the
Eastern Conference. Lou Williams had his opportunity to shine, and
what do you know, the Clippers are actually hanging in
an eight spot right where they don't have a healthy
Blake Griffin Gallinari has been dinged up. There's no I'd
be okay with that. I would actually be okay with
Louiams being in ahead of Damian Lillard. Lillard's miss games

(38:31):
and the Trailblazers are just okay, right, whereas the Clippers
feel like they're overachieving in spite of the fact that
they they don't have injured players, right. And I honestly
think Lillard who got in on on uh you know,
he's a fill in. He's a fill in, right, But
I think he got in because he bitched and complaining
because his name is Damian Lillard, even though he's only

(38:52):
a now he's a three time All Star. Where I
would agree with you as that supposed to Damian Lillards,
supposed to Lou Williams. The Chris Paul Thing. I'd be
okay with that. I mean, look, he's been banged up
the whole first half the season. I'd be that that
would not bother me in any sort of way. All right,
let's go to coaching hires in the NFL, because a
couple were made official over these last couple of days.
Steve Wilks in Arizona. We know Mike Rabel is going

(39:13):
to Tennessee. Pat Shermer officially with the Giants. Let's rank
these five Rabowl in Tennessee, Wilks in Arizona, Shermer with
the Giants, Gruden in Oakland, Matt Nage with the Chicago Bears.
Those top five NFL head coaching hires. Can't say Patricia
and Josh McDaniels yet because it's not official. But ranked
those five that we gave you, I'm gonna go Gruden one,

(39:35):
and it's not even I mean the rest of them
aren't even close. No, I mean Gruden has Gruden built
a Super Bowl team in Oakland and then won a
Super Bowl in Tampa. So anybody like, look, it's not
your money that the Raiders are spending a hundred million
dollars or ten years. You take that out. They got
Gruden and Naggi has never coached the game in his life.
Mike Rabel field like just got out the football field. Right,

(39:57):
there's Steve Wilkes has been a head coach once at
a school you can't even name, right, So Gruden one,
it ain't close. I like Nagy. Second, And here's the
only reason why nags a quarterback, Whisper. They have a
young quarterback. Those two work together. Shermerc could be a
quarterback Whisper. We just don't know who his quarterbacks goes, right,
We don't know what they do with Odell Beckham. There's
a ton of questions. He could be walking into the

(40:18):
best situation or he could be walking into a really
bad situation where they draft a quarterback and keep Eli
manning and they're supposed to work work together. Uh Rabel,
It all depends on who he hires. On offense. I
think he'll be good, but you know, they gotta get
Marcus Mariot to going. They gotta have a better play
collar and Wilkes. We don't even know who the quarterback
is gonna be in Arizona, right, We have no idea.

(40:38):
What is he a good defensive quitter. Yes, does he
sound like an energetic guy who wants to have culture. Absolutely,
But San Francisco knows who their quarterback is, the Rams
know who their quarterback is, the Seahawks do who their
quarterback is. They're all in the same division. Arizona does not,
and so I can't give that higher uh any higher marks.
Even though I like the guy and I like what
I've heard from him, I think there's an interesting aspect

(41:00):
as well, because you thought Pat Shermer was maybe gonna
go to Arizona and that's where he would bring case
Keenum along. Well, he chose to go to the New
York Giants essentially, and now you've got Eli Manning there
in New York. But if you're going to rank them,
you gotta say, Okay, well the Giants got the guy
over Arizona, so automatically that should be Yeah. The one
thing that that would be interesting is does Shermer um

(41:24):
does Sherman get them to draft Sae Kwan Barkley If
he thinks that Manning is salvageable, that he's Manning still
has gas in the tank, Do you keep Manning? Do
you get Sae Kwon Barkley and say Hey, now we'll
have the best running back in the draft. We got
the best wide receiver, we got a pretty good tight end.
We'll fix the offensive line the rest of the draft
in free agency. So there's so many unknowns. Whereas I

(41:47):
know Nagy is gonna work with Mitchell Drobinsky, and I
know that Gruden. I know Gruden's got Derek Carr and
they got play of other players. If you have somebody
who's more buttoned up than the previous regime, I think
the Raiders will be a playoff team the final quick one,
not the top five. But just drank your best moments
of the pro am today, Doug, What did you take
from it here at the Farmer's Insurance Open. Best moments
were the tacos. There's two different sets of tacos. The

(42:09):
first tacos, which were on the third hole, that was
probably the best. Um. You we used my ball twice.
Both of those times would be top five. Three. I
had a three wood in which I actually outdrove people
with I. I smothered a three wood one time. UM
and UM. I got to see my my buddy Scott Stalins,
who's actually working out here on the on the green

(42:30):
that that's what that's one who I've played within two
of these pro ams, um and then um, let's see
I need a fifth one. No, you could just of
them just looking out into the ocean, into the ocean.
Somebody gave Kevin Durant some really bad advice and he's
taking it. That's next one up. Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox

(42:50):
Sports Radio, coming to you live from the Farmer's Insurance,
Open and beautiful San Diego, California. Welcome in eight seven
seven ninety nine on Fox. Is in fact the phone
number eight seven seven nine on Fox. Do Do Do
Do Do Do Do? Got some college hoop to talk

(43:11):
about a little bit later on in the show. Is
uh we saw Trey Young scored twenty six on nine
shots as opposed to forty eight on thirty nine shots.
Going back to Saturday, by the way, Clemson was held
to thirty six points at Virginia. As a team, they
took forty seven shots. That's that's sub optimal, uh, Dan

(43:34):
buy or fresh off the course. You hear him laughing
in the background. Suboptimal, Right, thirty six points on forty
seven shots. It's not good. That's not gonna get it done.
Not good, Dave, It's not good. It's not good at all. Um. Yet,
some guys are not good bad guys. Like, has Tom
Hanks ever played a bad guy? Trying to think? I

(43:54):
think Tom Hanks there played a bad guy. I want
to see Tom Hanks in um The Post? Have you
seen The Post? Know? Is it out? Yes? It is out?
Like Tom Hanks Meryl Streep, Like, it's gonna be a
good movie. It could be a crap script. It's gonna
be a good movie. You can have a crap director.
I don't think they'd be in it. It was a
crap director. You're gonna have a good movie. But like
Tom Hanks can't really like he's Woody in Toy Story right,

(44:20):
Like he just can't play. He can't be a bad guy.
That's not who he is. Um, some guys are not
good bad guys, And I think Kevin Durant is kind
of that dude. Do you guys see Kevin Durant got
ejected again last night? Yes, here's Kevin Durant after last

(44:40):
night's game, when he was asked about getting ejected first half.
I was drilling up on the right side. I made
a left and right cross, he said, I carried, Uh,
you kind of let that go, he said, I accellently.
Where do you get to carry from? He said, I
froze the defender. I said, that's what a crossovers for,
and that's why I do it, to freeze my defender.
And he tried to make a bunch of his uses

(45:00):
and I told him he was wrong, and he went
to halftime. Probably would have added to so second half.
His whole thing was like, he's trying to get me.
So like, look, Kevin Durant thinks officials are at to
get him, fans are at to get him, other teams
are out to get him. And I'm sure to a
certain extent, there's truth to it. Right, fans do think

(45:20):
that he had to. You have people saying it's week
that he joined the seventy three win team and win
a championship. That from the fans, there are players that
still believe in order to beat the Golden State Warriors,
you gotta rough them up and whatever back and forth
there is between the coach, between players and referees. I
think that is real. These guys work in the same
space and uh, there's not shared respect for one another. Um.

(45:44):
I do think it's funny. He's like, you froze your defenders, Like, yeah,
that's what I was trying to do. The problem with
it is like, look, Draymond Green, even Draymond wasn't built
to be as bad a guy as he was made
out to be. Two years ago in the NBA Final,
really remember, like they're playing Oklahoma City and he kicked
Steven Adams in the and just so you know, he

(46:07):
people went crazy on social media and the talk of
him doing it, and he wasn't the same player. He
won the same player. And then you go forward to
the NBA Finals and he did it again. He finally
get the you know, they're up three games to one,
he gets the spending for game five. Um, and when
he came back, like he wasn't. So even Draymond Green,
who's more built to be the bad guy, struggled being

(46:30):
the bad guy in the NBA playoffs. Kevin Brans really
not built built to be the bad guy. He just isn't.
Like a couple of years ago, his nickname somebody game,
the nickname Slim Reaper, great nickname. He was like, no,
I don't really like that, it's too mean, right, Slim
Reaper's death and not really into that, right, Like he doesn't.
He never embraced it previously, why would he embrace it now.

(46:54):
He's just not built for that. And and so I
almost feel like somebody gave him some advice and he
took it and he probably shouldn't, right, And it's somebody.
It's like, you know, we all have friends, and I
call friends for advice all the time. But just because
they give you advice doesn't mean to take it, right, Like, yeah,

(47:17):
he told me to quit my job and walk in
and tell my boss to f off, Like, yeah, that
dude's never held a job, right, Like, what are you
talking about? That guy's a psycho, he's bipolar. Why would
you listen to him now he's not on his meds. Like,
there's lots of reasons not to listen to Jimmy, and
I don't listen to Jimmy. Don't walk in your boss
if you're gonna quit, Like, give me your notice and

(47:37):
find another job before you give your notice since you're
not sitting in unemployment, have to pay extra for cobra.
I feel like somebody went up to Kevin Durant was like, yo, man,
you gotta show him you're not scared you gotta show
him how tough you are. And when I was um,
the head coach of Washington's name is Mike Hopkins. Say so.
Mike Hopkins grew up just north of where we are

(48:00):
right now. We're in beautiful San Diego, California, Tory Pines. UH.
Fox Sports Radio is broadcasting live from the Farmers Insurance
Open in San Diego. Mike Hopkins grew up in South
was called South County, South Orange County, and he played
for Monday High School and then for Syracuse. He went
away to go to Syracuse. He played for my dad
in au basketball and I never forget when he came

(48:22):
back from his first or second summer, he gave, like
all of us, a bit of advice. Yeah, let me
give you a little advice. Okay, when you're from Orange County,
they think you're white and you're soft, and you gotta
show him you're crazy. Okay, So you gotta do early
in the season, you gotta do something crazy, right, like
just go somebody fouls. You just go crazy like you
like you're a Tasmanian devil. Pick up a chair and

(48:44):
chase somebody with it. Pick up a broom and chase
somebody with it. You gotta show him you're crazy. That's
really really good advice. Okay, but there are just certain
guys that don't have it in them to go crazy.
They just can't. I played for a coach Notre Dame,
John McCleod, John John, John McLeod, You should talk like

(49:05):
this every day. Notre Dame were immature. And John mcleouds
the head coach of the Phoenix Suns and what many
people call the greatest NBA game ever when they went
with four overtimes with the Boston Celtics. He's head coach
in New York Knicks. Like, here's the guy with great respect,
but you know, he couldn't do He could not yell,
like his voice didn't sound right. It would he would

(49:25):
just look bad when he's yelling. It almost likely had
hurt him to raise his voice and to yell and
really get onto people like that wasn't his thing. And
so you know, assistant coaches could have gone, you need
to go rip rip into him, but that he couldn't
do it because you don't almost feel bad for the
guy to be laughing at the guy because you knew
it was forced. That's what I feel like from Kevin Durant,

(49:46):
Like Kevin dres a great dude. It's kind of sarcastic,
really interesting, really smart. When I see Ken Duran, I
don't think that's a tough guy. That's the guy who
should be getting thrown out of multiple games. Like that
feels like that's an act. And especially for a guy
who used to say the famous quote Durant was, there's
a lot of fake tough guys in this league, and
he's one of them. Kevin Durant would call out fake

(50:06):
tough guys like he's kind of doing the fake tough
guy thing. Kind of feels like it a little bit,
a little bit all right, Uh, coming up next. Um,
we can in fact overreact to people's over analysis, even
of college players. We'll get to that upcoming. First. Hey, guys,

his putting routine as well as a litany of other
pros as we get ready for the Farmer's Insurance Open,
which of course is tomorrow. Today was the pro am
Dan Buyer just informed me and John Ramos that after
I believe, after I left to prep for the show, um,

(52:20):
he damaged a woman's retina by hitting her in the eye.
She was sitting in a chair, just trying to just
trying to enjoy the sunshine. Here, Tory Bines, let me
tell you how it all went down. So after smoking
a drive down the left side of the fairway that
somehow caught the rough Okay, maybe not exactly. She was
about forty yards off line from the center of the fairway,

(52:41):
so I pull hooked a drive that bounced, and she
said that it hit her chair, but it didn't hit her,
so I apologized. But it was the closest that she's
come to being hit by a ball where it actually
hit her hair. But it hit her chair on a bounce,
not on the fly. So I think that there's also
something to take from that. Did it hit her chair

(53:01):
and then nestle nicely in the fairway. Um, no, it didn't.
It nestled nicely in probably a hole where snakes and
weasels and that. So anyway, we were we played my
ball like once I think the entire day, and we
ended up using the other guys. The other guy's t shots.
That's Dan Buyer, Golfer extraordinary. You'll hear from him a

(53:23):
little bit later on in the show. Um, this is
actually an interesting story only in that if there's some
confirmation bias to it. When when when you heard Giselle
bunched In talk on CBS before at the start of
the year about um about Tom Brady having concussions that
he doesn't want to talk about, you should You should

(53:46):
have known right then and there that I'm Brady to
shut it down. She wants her husband back. She is.
But like the thrill ride that is the New England Patriots,
it does not appear that he has any desire to
retire anytime soon. But everything we've heard from Jail and
the fact Brady doesn't necessarily too about how Gizell feels

(54:12):
honestly about his football career, tells you that this story
is is is true. Uh, Brady's supermodel wife tried to
get j Feely retired. Kicker, of course works for CBS,
a friend of mine, a former Michigan teammate, to convince
the Patriots start to retire. According to the feature in
the latest issue with Sports Illustrated, Feely said quote she

(54:33):
was dead serious who was on vacation with Brady and
his family. Instead, Feely looked at Brady and said, play
as long as you can. Brady responded with a smile
on a wink mm hmmm. Usually usually what the wife wants,
ultimately the wife gets. Usually um. On the other hand,

(54:53):
like I think that Brady is smart enough to turn
this thing around on Giselle, to which he can ultimately win. Like, look,
I don't want god dudes looking at you and your
panties anymore, right, But what have I said, like, Hey,
I'm tired of your the highest paid model in the world.
I don't really like you being scanning Glad. I know

(55:14):
it's part of the job, okay, but you know we
have kids now, we have a family. What if I
said that to you and she would say that's crazy.
That's how I feel about you telling me I need
to shut down being a quarterback. Now she's what she's
saying is like, look at all kind of goes hand
in hand. Bob Costa is not comfortable concussions. He's now out.
Doug Whaley, the former general manager of the Buffalo Bills

(55:37):
who got fired earlier this year. He was the one
who said football is not good for you. Like we
all kind of we we know football is not good
for you. The question is is a different a quarterback?
And maybe the bigger question for at least Tom Brady
is can he convince his wife that whatever damage that's
been done has been done and he's gonna play until

(55:57):
his body is no longer able? Well, wasn't that the
argument then? I mean, because she can't get CTE from
a two piece Bakhini. Of course, of course you cannot.
If it was if the two piece Sporghini was tightly
wrapped around her head for too many years, then maybe
you're you're right. Don't you also think that what do
you think Tom Brady is going to do what he's

(56:18):
done playing exactly? We have no idea because we we
don't know, we don't. He doesn't seem like a GM type,
doesn't seem like an ownership type. He's not a coach, No,
not at all. And I don't think he's a broadcaster,
although maybe he could. I honestly think he'll just he'll
he'll go into business. He'll do the business thing. He did,

(56:42):
the business thing, the under arm or TV twelve, that's
sort of nutrition sort of thing. That's that's probably why
they've they've launched the t V twelve book and they
have the you know, a couple of different stores. He's
looking for his two point. Oh what's crazy is you
would think that that there's there's enough there right. I
don't know that. That's the hard part about being court

(57:02):
right now. Look, he's played it long enough to where
he's gotten everything out of himself that he could possibly get.
So it's not like he had like a five year
flash in the pan career that he somehow he yearns
for it. But the the hard part is when Tom
Brady runs out there like he's the most important of
fifty three guys. He's a leader of men, and there

(57:24):
isn't anything outside of running an organization that's ever gonna
fill that need, ever gonna feel that that that part
of your brain um far has been able to do
it Farres kind of ridden off into the sunset. He
does a commercial here or there, but he grows a
big grizzly beard. He runs triathlons. He's on this on
his tractor like he's been able. He's been able far
as the guy who you know, like you can only

(57:45):
hunt and fish so much, right, Like, I mean this
is like when my my father in law retired. I
was like, what are you gonna do? He's like, well,
I'm a hunting, I'm a fish And I was like,
what are youna do next week? Right? Like I get it,
Like I've gone fishing. It's a great time. I talked.
I can't do it. I can'tnot do it again. Um
so what does Tom Brady to do? I don't feel

(58:05):
like he's I don't feel he now could he be
an owner? It's possible, right because there's a certain Jeter
sort of way to him, right, Like Derek Jeter was
never really a baseball fan. Crazy that he owns a
baseball team, but he was never really a base You
listen to every one of his when he had a
night off. He didn't watch baseball on TV. He's not

(58:27):
that's not what he does. He likes business, he likes people,
he likes going on, he likes made Derek Jeter, and
I think Brady is probably similarly that way. But the
his wife wants him to retire thing. I think a
lot of dudes to deal with that. The difference is
they don't need his money, right, not just because of
how much money he's made, but how much money she's made. Um.
On the other hand, there's the argument that Philip Rivers played,

(58:49):
which is he thinks it's position dependent, right quarterbacks, position
to which you might get your bell rung once a year,
but it's not like you're putting yourself in harm's way
like you are if you're an offensive lineman or even
a wide receiver coming across the middle like a you know,
like a Wes Welker type. Do you think it's it
could be even time spent that she just wants to
hang out with him, Like that's yes, but you know

(59:11):
what happens likely done right, But you know what, you
know what happens with things like that, right when your
husband's never home, your wife's never home, and the home
and like, man, I wish you were back on the
road again, because you know you have your own routine.
My wife Da hits me with that all the time.
Is She's like, look, it's not that we don't like
having you around. It's like we just get into a
routine where in the winter we're used to you going
and doing games and studio and all this other stuff

(59:34):
that when you're not around, it's okay, Like I can
I can handle it. Now you're in the way, You're like,
you're just kind of there hit the road, Jack. So
that that's a classic wife thing, though, is I want
you around more and then you're around more, like I
like the better when you were on the road, to
be completely honest, Like, you know, because everybody wants to
pick what they watch on TV at night, you know,

(59:54):
she wants to watch the Batchelread He's like, I don't
want to watch the ballgame. Watch the ball game? Like, well,
you know, you can go in the guest room. What
was the point of me staying home quitting football? So um,
but that sounds like a highly but there's a there's
a certain amount of confirmation bias in that highly believable
Did you did? Did you guys happen to catch the

(01:00:15):
Oklahoma come from behind win against Kansas last night? On
was it big money? What is it Tuesday? Yeah, I
was like super Tuesday. Don't even remember what. I don't
even know what day today. Today is Wednesday because tomorrow
the golf kid, I really hate to play this card,
but I think you're the only one here who was
not stuck in traffic yesterday. This is this is this
is true. This is true. It's like normally you get

(01:00:35):
to San Diego, Torrey Pines, you open up the door
and you're like, oh, this is amazing. I'm so happy
to be here. These poor schlums, they all fought traffic
for like four hours to get down here. They got
down like I gotta pee, I need to eat something.
Musics like you know he's chained smoking cigarettes, Like do
you smoke? He's like I did not before that drive.
Now I can't get enough of them anyway. UM, so

(01:00:58):
what you missed was Trey Young, of course, leads the
country and scoring and assists. Um and he took thirty
had taken thirty nine shots and scored forty eight points
against mild Modern Oklahoma State in a loss on Saturday.
Took all of nine shots last night, did score twenty
six points in a win against Kansas um look. Some

(01:01:20):
of it was how Kansas was defending him. They ran
some boxing one they're very athletic guards. He kind of
got into him. They blitzed him, which is like double
teammate every time he came off a pick and roll
earlier in the game, they tried to get the ball
out of his hands. But some of it is and
businesses do this all the time. Common overreaction to people's
reaction to his thirty nine shots on social media, it

(01:01:41):
felt like he it wasn't that he didn't want to
force it, like he didn't want to look like the
bad guy. And whether it was his coaches getting on
him or his teammates given him the stink guy, or
more than anything, just kind of an overreaction to people's reaction,
Like the reason he took thirty nine shots is that's
how Oklahoma State thought they could beat Oklahoma. Right. If
we don't let anybody else, just make one guy try

(01:02:02):
and beat us when he gets in lane, don't help
stay stay back to your man, and Oklahoma still should
have won the game. Had they fouled Oklahoma State, they
should have won the game. He should have fouled. That's
the other point he should have for people don't know
what we're talking about. Trey Young. They were down, Oklahoma
was up three eleven seconds ago. Oklahoma State got in
the ball inbounds once they crossed the mid court. He

(01:02:24):
was supposed to foul. He didn't foul, or he wasn't.
A foul wasn't called. Oklahoma State made the three, Trey
Young Mr Three at the buzzer, goes to overtime and
Oklahoma State wins the game. That was going back to Saturday.
But the point was that what what social media doesn't
allow his nuance and the nuance of that game was
Oklahoma State was trying to get him to shoot the
ball as many times as possible because they wanted to

(01:02:46):
make it. They wanted to turn the players against one another.
They were trying to get it so that Trey Young
would take every shot and all the rest of the
Sooners would be pissed and they'd stopped playing, which is
kind of what happened. But you can't and whereas as
Kansas philosophy was totally different. They were trying to limit
any good looks and Trey Young was a little bit
tentative to take, uh what takes shots that he had

(01:03:09):
taken in previous games, but with no chance of nuance.
It did appear that Trey, at least on some level,
reacted and maybe overreacted, over corrected to the pressure of
social media because the thirty nine shots he took uh
in the Saturday lass to regardless, they won the game.
But yeah, and that isn't that the key? They end

(01:03:31):
up winning the game and he plays forty minutes, Doug, Well,
he plays forty minutes and he has the ball in
his hands all the time. It's really hard. We we
did this. Um, what was the stat we were comparing
last week where I said, you can't compare stats year
to year? Was it was it Lebron's Lebron's thirty thousand points?
Was that? What? What? What it was? Kevin Durant is
Kevin durandt scoring twenty thou points? And and my my

(01:03:52):
point is that now you know, like Lebron James scurse
this thirty thousand point? Okay scores is thirty tho would
it say in his arm he had ens jayhawk. That's
congratulations on the loss last night? Um? Anyway, Um, so, uh,
Lebron James scores thirty last night and we're you're trying

(01:04:12):
to compare him historically to all these other He's the
youngest player ever to scored thirty thousand points. Was only
nine seven players ever scored thirty thou months. Like, look,
he didn't go to college. He started playing in the
NBA when he was like eighteen years old, right, And
oh yeah, by the way, we're now in the type
of basketball that's being played in the NBA allows him
to be more successful, whereas if he was you know,

(01:04:35):
in previous regime eras he'd probably be a power forward.
He wouldn't be a point guard who could play downhill
and draw fouls and get get get layups because the
courts so spread out. Um. There's also, you know, a
higher usage rate, especially early in his career. He had
a huge usage rate Wrestle Westbrook last year, huge usage rate.
So that's one of the things that Trey Young is
benefiting from. Yes, he's been awesome, but you know, he

(01:05:00):
he he has more opportunities to score points, to make assists,
to make mistakes. He's also averaging almost six turnovers a game.
What I found amazing if myself and looking at it,
because I did not like what he did on Saturday
and that locks to Oklahoma State. But how much in
the big picture have we've been clamoring for a superstar
in college basketball and now we finally get one. And

(01:05:23):
and you quickly then turn your back and said, well,
why didn't try young? And I'm is guilty of it
as anyone, because I thought there were a lot of
things that he could have done better as a quote
unquote team player in that Oklahoma State game. And it's
just funny on how this dynamic ends up. Christian James
ms a jumper at the end of that game on Saturday.
And the point that I've always said, Doug is if
he is not in a rhythm, if other players cannot

(01:05:45):
touch the ball, they aren't gonna have the confidence they're
gonna shoot three of twelve. They're gonna shoot three or
four team because they were maybe one of eight, because
they don't have those opportunities and you never know when
you're going to get it. Last night seemed to be
a different sort of thing for Oklahoma than it was
on Saturday, where guys were actually involved able to well
that that that's that's the big thing. It's not just
about making those shots because you've gotten touches early in

(01:06:07):
the game. It's also about we we discussed this going
back to the k y B the knowing your boys.
You gotta get other guys going early in the game,
you know, get a dunk or a dunk at a
three point shooter and open three point shot, get a
driver a drive because then you'll get more out of
them and the other things that you want them to do.
The things that they don't want to do, they will
do if you get them the ball where they want

(01:06:28):
the basketball. And I thought Trade did a really really
good job of that. Uh. The doug Otlip Show is
broadcasting live in the Farmer's Insurance Open in at Tory
Pines in San Diego. We are let's go to David
Gaston for an update. Dave, Uh, David what he got.
We'll stick with the NBA right now. Sacramento King's Deer
and Fox is listed as day to day. He's got

(01:06:50):
tightness in his abs. Grizzlies Terry Evans quite a good thing.
Do you want to have tight abbs? Yeah, of course
he's got tightness in his ads. Like that's kind of
a guy. That's it. Those guys, Memphis Grizzies, Terreek Evans
listen as questionable tonight. It gets the San Antonio Spurs

(01:07:12):
and that same game, Mino Janobi will not be playing
in it. In Minnesota, Timberwolves head coach not playing just
because he's old. He's like, yeah, I just I got
mold No Titaness there, don't we have Tyreek Evans coming
up on the show? What was he coming on the show? Music?
Next week? Tomorrow tomorrow, Tyreek Evans. So he's not playing tonight,
he better make make make the show tomorrow when he's

(01:07:33):
supposed to. He's got some prep for tomorrow. Then, very nice,
that's what he's doing. He's prepping for the interview. I
guaranteed game time tomorrow. By the way, Jamal Crawford, he's
not gonna be playing tonight for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Jimmy
Butler's listed as doubtful, and Roddy hood is missing an
action tonight for the Utah Jazz as well. Switching on
over quickly to the National Football League, the Steelers are

(01:07:54):
reporting that Levy on Bell and the organization are working
towards a new contract much different from last year. Miami
Herald doesn't expect the Dolphins to resign a wide receiver
Jarvis Landry. He's looking for somewhere in the range of
thirteen million dollars annually, aren't we all? Panthers quarterback Cam
Newton diagnosed with ligament and cartilage damage in his knee
during the team's wild card loss at New Orleans. And

(01:08:15):
in college football, Utah State is hiring former a s
U defensive coordinator Keith Patterson in that same role. Doug
back to you, do you guys see the story that
the NBA is trying to get a cut out of
a legalized sports sports gambling and what could be uh?
This is a Brian Windhorse article and what could end
up being a seminal moment sports gambling in America. The

(01:08:35):
NBA on Wednesday formally requested a set of laws that
could be the basis for professional sports leagues pushing for
national legalized wagering on games. Dance Billen, an attorney for
the NBA, testified in front of the New York State
Senate Committee and for the first time made it clear
that the league's price would be to become a partner
in legalizing the multibillion dollar industry. The NBA wants one

(01:08:58):
percent of every bet made on his games in order,
in addition to other regulations of request, that could create
massive revenue for the NBA and other sports leagues in
the future. So here's what the NBA is trying to do.
They're trying to do what the government is trying to do. Right,
that's all the government. Remember, Like the government's like, we
don't want to legalize weed. They're like, how much can

(01:09:20):
you make taxes from weed? Like shocker weed is legal
now in most states. If you go back before that,
the gambling is bad. Gambling is the devil. But lotteries, well,
that benefits schools. So we'll do a lottery. When a
lottery is essentially gambling, right, it is, uh, super could
be super low risk, super high reward, but the odds

(01:09:42):
are way way, way, way static into it's still gambling.
And so now if you look, there's plenty of places
to which they're trying to legalize sports gaming. And the
reason they're trying to legalize it is not because our
morals have changed, but because you're like, man, everything costs
more money. We gotta find more tax revenue. How can

(01:10:03):
we do it. It's essentially a consumption tax, and it's
the way in which people. It's a there's a tax
belief that. Look, if we do a consumption tax um,
you know it, it looks completely different. It doesn't look
like the government trying to hold you down. Just you know,
raising your income taxes, are raising taxes so you know,

(01:10:27):
to pay for your schools and your roads. Uh, this
is on you. This is not something that's done a
need based purchased. But the NBA sitting there going like,
we don't want gambling on our sport. That's bad. That
could cause somebody, you know, that could cause an unsavory
element in that could cause referees to get back to
what Tim Donegie accused them of. That could cause players

(01:10:50):
to throw games. We don't want gambling. Wait unless we
can get a one percent cut, we can present cut.
We will welcome sports gambling. Which is the exact same
thing is the legalization of weed. You know, it's a drug.
We're against it. You can't do it it. You know,
even if you legalize it to people twenty one year

(01:11:11):
old or eighteen or miners will be able to obtain
it a lot easier. We don't want weight. We can
make how much money on it? Sure, I'll do it.
And that's what's happened, but really interesting to see if
this this works. From the NBA, they're like, yeah, you know,
we'll we'll be partners in it. But I mean, I

(01:11:33):
don't uh Tyreek Tyree Gibins by the way, is ill.
It may not come on tomorrow, so well, let's not
put the put super pressure on. I think actually what
happened was he's listening to the show and he was like,
oh is that tomorrow. I don't think that's happening for
tomorrow's interview. We'll see how he does that morning shoot around. Yeah,

(01:11:53):
that's an interesting idea though, right the NBA going like, yeah,
well we'll we'll partner with you. You bet on sports.
What about the daily Fantasy? I mean they were they
were in on it early, weren't they. I mean FanDuel
and DraftKings um, And when you really look at it,
you know there's there's such a question. And I look
at daily fantasy as a lottery because there is there's

(01:12:18):
one there's one equation that can win you, like the
the big money. But I'll say this, if we all
got everybody's sitting around the table here and played a
ten person league and fantasy, I would love for a
site to just set that up that we could all
end up, you know, doing whatever with Sure it comes
down to the end of of of being gambling. But
the fact is is the NBA and I believe the

(01:12:41):
w n b A was even in on. Dude, if
you're betting on if you're gambling on the w n
b A, officially have a problem. That's like ways to
identify you have a problem. If you're if if on
a Saturday morning you're drinking out of a flask on
your couch by yourself, you have a problem. If you're
betting on the deb U n b A, Dude, you

(01:13:01):
got a problem. The yeo, man, you know I know this.
I got this line on the Sparks. Okay, the Sparks
are playing the Storm tonight, the three point dogs. And
when I say dog, I'm not speaking about the women.
I'm thinking, oh, I got the underdogs. Underdogs. Before Vegas
was hip to it and keen to it, you could
always bet the under And then they ended up getting

(01:13:23):
an opportunity where people would I don't know ten years ago,
twelve years ago, make a lot of money because they
would always bet the under because Vegas wasn't keen to
how the games would play out, and there would be
a lot of lower scoring games. You weren't getting track
meets in the w n B A and people couldn't
make money by taking the under. Yeah again, if you're
betting on the w n BA, that means you have

(01:13:43):
to watch the w n T A. You're like, oh,
my eyes are bleeding. Um yeah, no, no, But that's
that that one is latching the w n B A
onto it. That's that's a way for the w n
BA to survive, right, That's that's that's basically what it is. Um,
all right, Coming up next year's what I wanna do.
I want to talk about, uh about Tiger and what

(01:14:06):
it how big, how important this year is to him
and frankly to the golf industry. Live from Tory Pines,
that's up coming next. This is the Doug Gottlieb Show
the Farmer's Insurance Open in San Diego on Fox Sports Radio.

(01:14:32):
The Doug Gottlip Show is broadcasting live from the Farmers
Insurance Open to Tory Pines in San Diego. Visit Farmers
Insurance Open dot comfert tournament info or join the conversation
at hashtag f I O a ten. We are Doug
gottlip Show, Fox Sports Radio, Dan Buyer alongside Dan. You

(01:14:53):
know what my um my, my favorite golf tournament used
to be. This is actually a non major golf tournament.
Do you remember the International? Oh? Yeah right? They used
played the International in Colorado and so you know, have
like six hundred yard like par foars and dudes are
like driving the green crazy stuff. I love that tournament
because they played the modified Stableford system. Now one thing
I've never understood. Nobody actually used the Stableford system, but

(01:15:16):
they used the modified Stableford system. I bring that up
because uh no, Jeff Ogilvie joins us here on set
of the Dug Gottlieb Show and the last didn't you win?
Like the Barracuda Open that was like a modified Stableford
system deal? Yeah yeah, yeah, like three years ago. I
love I love that scoring because it rewards you more
for going for it than being being conservative. Yeah, Like
an eagle and a birdie is much more heavily wided

(01:15:39):
upward than a than a barger used downward. So it's
aggressive Hawaii, yeah, which which is kind of what you
you like as a you like as a fan out
might be to the kind of true golf traditional listue
like what like, we've been scoring it this way for
hundreds of years. Why do we need to Why don't
need to figure out? But in an effort to bring
more attention to some of these lesser known tournaments, it's

(01:16:00):
kind of a cool way to do it. And then
I think so and it it gives more guys a
chance with the with the data player, you can jump
off the field on the last day if you throw
a couple of agos and a lot of birdies and
white much more likely to move up the field. And
you couldn't have struct play events. So the finisheress can
get pretty exciting. Yeah. Jeff Ogilvy, Tyrone vn Ashwagen joining
us on the Doug Gottlieb Show, A Nassi, a South
African getting ready for tomorrow's field. Here at the Farmer's

(01:16:23):
Insurance Open in San Diego, Tarron. Let me ask you,
we're talking a little bit. Everybody thinks of this quarters
two courses, the North and the South. We all think
of the South, right because that's the one that you
finish on on a Sunday. But they made some changes
to the North. Um. The North has some really picturesque goals,
but has never been seen as the equal to the South.

(01:16:44):
What are the two courses like now? I think they
tried to do that last year with the changes. You know,
Um there's some good paff forwards, redesigned greens. Um, they
try to make it more competitive. Uh, you know, strokes
stroke average wise, like the South course, it's still going
to play easier, but you know, it's it's a it's

(01:17:06):
a tough course. If you're missing fear ways, you know,
you're still hitting wedges and eight arms out, you know,
not holding the greens or anything like that. So you've
still gotta hit it well around the North to score.
If you're hitting it in the rough, you're not going
to score. Jeff, how how different do you feel like
the vibe is with Tiger Tiger in the field. It's

(01:17:27):
always different. I mean, it gets hyped up. It's kind
of this is just feels like we're kind of it's
groundhog Day a little bit. We've kind of had his
start here at Tori so many times out of a break, ever,
a big long breaker on injury break. So the golf
channel fires up and all the golf media starts talking.
A month before when he commits, and the players, I
think get excited because we've we've now got a bunch

(01:17:49):
of guys out here who are some of the best
golfers in the world who have never played in golf
with Tiger Woods, you know, which is crazy to me
because we played so many But um it, it makes
the hotel prices go up. It it creates an atmosphere
unlike anything else. The only he can do. So it's
um well, you all love it when he comes back
tarn the the four majors obviously have Augusta, but the

(01:18:09):
other three are the other three are all links style, right,
I mean you got you got Shinnikock, don't you And
and then um beller v and in the Bellery or
whatever in in St. Louis is more kind of links style.
There's you're not You don't have the traditional American courses
for the p G A and for the U s
Open like you've had necessarily in the past. Give me
your thought, like when when you guys look at the

(01:18:31):
majors this year, does it does it skew who you
think has a chance to have a great year. That's
a good question. I have no idea. You know, if
the guys. If someone's playing well, you know, I don't
want to say it doesn't matter what course it is,
but sometimes it doesn't matter what course it is. If
you're playing good, you've got a you've got a good

(01:18:53):
opportunity to win um. But the links style, if you know,
if you're not able to play the bump and runs
and the slopes, you gonna struggle. This has maybe a
perfect question for you because I would say, when you
want at wingfoot, that may have been the turning point
for the US Open that we have now. Not that
specific event, but it seemed when Mike Davis took things

(01:19:14):
over that the courses have changed. So when you see
what you want at twelve years ago now and now
you see what you know, how they set up tory.
I mean, is it just a complete one eighty from
from what you wanted twelve years ago to see how
these majors are now being set up, maybe even specifically
the US Open because it's back here in three years. Well,

(01:19:35):
the U s Ovens are one de pointed because the
Masters has been the sign forever um, and the British
Oven's gonna be a sign forever um. Mike Davis definitely
kind of changed the mentality a little bit. Um it
was always if you hit the fairy right, if you
miss a fail, it's over. But Mike put in a
little bit of graduated rof and he's moved some tays
up on potos to make some halls droppable, and sometimes
shortened the course as opposed to lengthen and then he

(01:19:57):
has gone to some pretty crazy places like China's by
and Um last year in Wisconsin Aaron Hills, non traditional
top venues and you still get great champions. Jordan Smaithan
Brooks kept both one of those two tournaments, and they
the real US Opens and they're the best fielding golfriend
It's a real hot test, but very different from Wingfoot,
which would have been a traditional As you say, at

(01:20:18):
US that seemed to be the last one. I mean,
I don't open. They cleared every tree they could out
of Oakmont. I mean, I mean, now there's there's not
even nothing there. There was. I don't know if you play.
When I played it and a couple of last two
years happen, it felt very much like US. But they're
about trees there. The rough was thick and it was Oakmont.
But but it was just it also just seemed that
it's opened up. And maybe I don't know, maybe he

(01:20:41):
gave you guys, by the way, by the way, general
Jeff plus five plus five was his winning score, right,
you want it plus five, but look at but even that,
that tournament was not remembered for even Jeff or for
the plus five, right, it was remember, what the hell
is filled? What is filled? Hitting off the deck with
the driver? What is he? What is he doing? What?
That was? What he's doing? Us open at at wingfoot? Um,

(01:21:04):
this is I don't know. This to me is interesting
in that I think one of the things golf is
going through is something that honestly UFC goes through. There's
too many good you guys have too many good players,
so you don't have like when we were kids. You
grow up and you see the heavyweight champion of the the world,
he'd be like thirty three and oh right, and even
if he fought thirty one, like you know, rummies, guys

(01:21:27):
that that had one arm and and and three eyes,
it didn't matter because the numbers were so obscene. There's
so much young talent guys that it's it's hard to
to run off two or three tournaments in a row.
It's hard to have a dominating year in which your
consent is. It almost feels like golf is a victim
of its success because there are so many young talented

(01:21:48):
players that you guys end up splitting up a bunch
of tournaments and you don't have I know, Jordan's and Brooks,
they've had a couple of incredible years. But is that
is that Is there any accuracy or legitimacy to the
idea there might act would be too much elite talent. Well,
there is a lot of elite talent, and it's a
lot more difficult. I would have said to like to dominate,
like you say, like it used to be, but I

(01:22:09):
mean before Tiger came along and they said no one
will ever dominate again, because the talents took good and
he found a way to dominate like no one's ever dominated. So, um,
this is going to raise the bar. There's some kid
now who's twelve, who's watching all this and he's gonna
work out a way and he's gonna have every he's
gonna have every piece. He's gonna be like a Roger
Federer of golf or something, and he's just gonna come
out and do it. It's inevitable that someone there's always

(01:22:31):
someone who elevates, like the NFL with the Patriots, Like
the NFL is set up so you can't dominate with
the other way, right, There's gonna be someone come along
and do that. And the quality of talent out here
now is just it's going to raise the bar for
these kids who are coming up. Uh tyrone for you? Um,
what do you think the biggest change this year two
thousand and eighteen in golf that the viewer will have

(01:22:53):
to come to grips with this h Like you said,
there's so much good competition everyone. It feels like everyone
has a shot to win. You know, so even if
you have your favorite players, you know you're gonna have
someone that's gonna, you know, probably disappoint you when you're playing.

(01:23:18):
Does South Africa look at Ernie Els like we look
at a Jack Nicholas or Tiger Woods? Um like that?
That's what I'm curious about. You have Greg Norman, But
is Ernie Els that guy? Or is a Gary player?
I mean when when you're growing up, Because all these
guys who are coming out here now are looking up,
they looked up at Tiger. You know, are these guys

(01:23:38):
that twenty year olds coming from South Africa. They're looking
up at Ernie Els absolutely. I mean when I was
growing up, it was Ernie, Ernie, Ernie, um, you know,
and Ernie was looking up at Gary. So you know,
it's it seems like there's always that generation where guys
are looking up and saying, Wow, I want to swing
like he does. I want to act like he does.
Um and he's just He's a legend man. He's everyone.

(01:24:00):
Everyone really enjoys. Everybody I knows wants to swing a
golf club like Ernie. And everybody I know thinks that
um uh, that that old South African would kick all
of our asses, right think Gary Player. Gary Player would
whip me right now, and he would. He has he
does have tied up guys. Best of luck. This weekend

(01:24:22):
of Determament Gotlip Show Live from the Farmer's Insurance Open
to Tory Pines continues here on Fox Sports Radio. What
Up It's Dog Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio broadcasting live
from the Farmer's Insurance Open and beautiful sunny San Diego, California,
Tory Pines. To be exact, We are just outside the

(01:24:45):
lodge at Tory Pines, And if you could like close
your eyes, like say, you're listening to us in the
Midwest and the weather is cold and crummy and you
don't have seed heaters, You're like, God, I hate living here. Um,
everything you hate about California, you would you would hate
this doubly so because you can see the ocean. There's
a slight breeze. It's just warm enough to which if

(01:25:06):
you need a jacket in the just cold enough to
you might need a little bit of a jacket in
the shade, and in the sun, it's really really warm
and beautiful. We're getting ready for uh that the Farmers
Insurance Open. You can join the conversation at hashtag f
IO or visit Farmers Insurance Open dot com for more
tournament info and to kind of help us get ready
for the golf season. Dan Buyer continues to join us alongside.

(01:25:29):
We played in the pro am today. Um, yeah it was.
It was as bad as you would actually think it was.
David hern and Harris English join us as well. Harrison
want to ask you because um, you played in playoff
here was two years ago. You're in the playoff here
year and fourteen. I can't remember. I think it was
actually two dozen fifteen, but that's okay, whatever I mean,

(01:25:49):
that would be three years ago. Three years ago, I
actually okay, But at least I knew it was you know. Um,
we were both wrong. We're both wrong. Um, well makes
this thing special? What makes this this course? Is is
the Tiger beaten Rocko? Is that? What? Or is it?
Is it the setting? Is it that? It's the kind
of the start of the year. What makes this a

(01:26:11):
bigger event than some of the other non major events.
I feel like it's everything. This is kind of the
biggest tournament of the new season. This is when Tiger
comes back, Jason Day comes back, Ricky, kind of all
the big names and golf playing here at Torry Ponds
probably one of the toughest tests we play all year,
kind of the see where were game stacks up for
the year, and uh, we all all the PGA Tour

(01:26:34):
players love this place. The North course they made a
lot harder to the South course as always, is one
of the toughest tests all year. So, um, we're excited
to be here and looking forward to it to a
good week. David, what about this course? It makes it
a tough test really in the season. I think it's
just the length really. I mean, this golf course has
some really good rough and some nice length. So we
haven't had a lot of rain leading up to this week,

(01:26:55):
so hopefully the ball is gonna run a little bit
helps some of the sort of average is like myself,
get it out there a little bit further. But you
know this golf course, I think it's it's just every
hole is good. There's not really like you know a
couple of holes where you know you can just go
out and make a few birdies here and there. Every
hole is a good hole. You have to kind of
hit a good tea shot all the way around and

(01:27:16):
and try to grind out some parts when you make
your miss. I like that with you knows that because
there are some there are some tournaments during the year
and which you guys are gotten so good. You look
up on Sunday like, dude minus twenties seven, like are
they playing at a muni out there that you guys
just tear the thing up? Um, what's what's your What
is the course to which you salibrate when you see
it on the schedule. I think everybody kind of has

(01:27:38):
their golf courses that they like to play every year?
Which one for me? Um, I tend to do all
more in the late spring and summer. I love courses
like Memphis. I tend to play Wall there. I love
those sort of. I love the Players Championship. I love
that golf course. I like sort of that fast Bermuda.
You mentioned the Players Championship. Ricky obviously one there that
was that I think was two years ago? Could be

(01:27:59):
by do you want to check my cheth? Was just
math on it? I can't remember right Like it's eighteen now,
I remembers fifteen he played? Um, is Ricky the guy
who were wait, who we most expect to win a
major this year? Who's yet to win a major? Like?
Who's that? Is he that guy? Like, who's that guy

(01:28:19):
that you're like when he last year? Brooks CapCo obviously
was might have been that guy. Who's who's that guy
this year? Yeah? It could be Ricky. It could be
John Romam. You see him playing some really good golf
right now. Um, you got a lot of good young
players that are itching to get in the mix. Um,
but yeah, Ricky, Ricky would probably the fan favor. The

(01:28:40):
fan favorite of of breaking in that that circle. Um,
so we'll see he'd be a good bet like he's
he's one everything else on tour. That's been a big tournament.
He's been in the mix enough times in the Major
I think a couple of years ago he finished the
top five and every major, which is pretty remarkable that
Harris English, Harris Singlish joining us, as is David Hearn
on the Doug Gottlip Show here on Sports Radio. Harris

(01:29:01):
is still hurt because is Georgia Bulldogs. Almost got there,
almost got there. Might have been a year early for us.
It might have been a year early, but you know,
look at look at all the things that kind of
went in your favor, right, Like you know, you you
get in the year where Tennessee is a mess, you
get in a year where Florida is a mess and
they fired their coach because he lies about getting death threats. Right,

(01:29:21):
we love seeing all all kind of seeing Florida but
all that stuff. But but it also, yes, it might
have been a year early with a true freshman starting quarterback,
but you might be it's the only time you'll have
son of Michelle and Nick Chubb in the same backfield.
Both healthy and you lose Rokuan to the pros. Um, Yeah,
you're gonna have to speak for all Georgia fans. What's

(01:29:42):
are you a Falcon guy as well? I've I've never
really been a Falcon guy. Um, so you didn't. So
you didn't. You didn't. You didn't suffer like double pain
in in consecutive years. What is that pain like though?
To see your dogs get that close to winning a
national title only to look not just lose it, but
to lose the fact actually lives, and to lose it Obama.
Losing Obama made it a whole lot worse. I mean,

(01:30:04):
that's that's kind of the team who's like our uncle
right now. I mean, especially with Kirby Smart coming from
the Nick Saban um Nick Saban disciples. It was tough.
I mean I would have loved to play Clemson for sure,
because Obama and Georgia are so close right now, and
we kind of run the same offense, same defense, and

(01:30:25):
they were just a little bit better. Um, it was
tough to see. It was dagger in the heart watching
the ending um after getting the sack second and twenty six.
The field goal kicker has is not kicking very well.
They're not gonna have him kicking bait. So everything kind
of went downhill and and blown coverage to looks off

(01:30:47):
the safety and throws a perfect pass. I mean it
was Um credited him credit and Nick saunty bad. I'm
reliving it again. You God. I got went to the
Rose Bowl, watched the one of the greatest college football
games I could I've ever seen at the Rose Ball
when we've been Okleman over time. So it was a

(01:31:09):
great year. I know. Georgia fans are pumped to be
in it. Um, Finally we're not playing in the Doug
Bowl against some smaller team. We actually um get to
be your supposed to be. You know, I don't know.
It's amazing Doug match. We played in the Pro Am
today and we play with Mac Hughes and we're on
the sixteen tea and everybody's cheering for him because there's

(01:31:29):
Canadians now, David, when you're dealing with this particular swing,
do you get more fans whether it be in Palm
Springs or San Diego because of the snowbirds that come
down from Canada? Do you do you get a sense
of that at all? Because I went and played years
back in Palm Springs and I got paired with two
people from p e I and another guy from Manitoba.

(01:31:50):
True story, And I just drove over from l A.
Are there more Canadians coming down here? Do you you
get that kind of backing? Honestly, I think there's Canadians
and just what every time we play all year. I'm
sure Harry can tell you that. Any anytime you get
pair of the Canadian there's always Canadian fans. It's just
kind of the way Canadians are. We just quote support
and uh, it's funny. You know, Hey, I'm from Saskatoon.
You're like, Okay, great, gout It's I will tell you though.

(01:32:17):
I mean it's always get good for you know, like
the the the beverage cart between the Canadians and the Ausse's.
It's really remarkable. I mean it's a remarkable ability to
intake that amount of alcohol. Let me ask you guys
both this um you guys have we part up? You've
both been in playoffs And one of the things I
was asking today I always ask is you know, if

(01:32:37):
you've either won or you've been in that final grouping,
or you've been in a playoff. The thing about golf,
which is you're you're not just playing the course and
you're playing with the guys, but you're playing against your head.
How do you process the nerves? How do you how
do you do that? What is what is your process too?
I'm on a team, you've been in playoffs. You gotta

(01:32:58):
make a put in order to force another playoff? Whole like,
how do you? How do you do that? You just
kind of do it. I think it's like a chicken
in the egg thing. I mean, you just you don't
know how you're gonna react until you're in that position,
and then you just figure out how you do it
and then you do it again. Is there is there
something that you learned from losing in those playoffs that
the next time around you're like, I, next time, I'm

(01:33:19):
going to do this because this is what's gonna work. Absolutely.
I think you learned from your failures just as much
as success as in golf. That's just kind of the
way golf is that. Uh, you know sometimes when you
get close and you miss it and you know, you
know what, next time, I'm gonna do better. It's just
the nature of sports. Harris, what about you? Yeah, it's weird.
I know I'm oh and one in playoffs, but ever

(01:33:40):
since I was a kid playing basketball, playing soccer, playing football,
I wanted to have the ball in the last thirty
seconds in the game. And I feel like everybody out
here on the PGA Tour once wants that. You want
to be on eighteen with the putts win. That's what
you practice for, that's what we do every single week.
And I wouldn't say I get more nervous in the
playoff and I do on eight team trying to trying

(01:34:02):
to make a put to get in the playoff. I'm
not losing in the playoff. You're at how to make
it probably six or seven foot or to get in
the playoff. So I'd kind of already done it and
end up making parl on eighteen to get kicked out
of the playoff. But um, I feel like we're all
very mentally strong, and it slows down for us when
we when we get in that situation. Okay, so but
it's it may slow down for you, But take me through,

(01:34:24):
like what is your process of Like is it just
I'm just gonna read it and I'm gonna go through
what I've done at thousand times like that sounds great,
but in your head you're thinking like when or lose
a golf tournament, right, just the reality of human nature. Yeah,
I think you try to. Everything we practice for and
everything we do, you try to make it as reactionary
as possible. You try to just make it, you know,
just like the put on the pudding green, Like you
pick your spot. You can make a good stroke and

(01:34:46):
then it goes in or it doesn't. Like I think,
you really try to. I know it sounds easy, and
we're not perfect at it all the time, but that's
what you're trying to do, and that's what the best
players in the world are the best of doing. It
doesn't matter the situation, they just pick a spot in
it it. What's it like to sleep on a lead?
Is that worse because you've got your twelve hours or
eighteen hours? How does that process? Is there any different?

(01:35:08):
I think I'm just that you make there. The first
time you sleep on a lead, it's probably harder than
the next time. I mean, the first time you get
in a spot where you just you just can't help
but think what's going to happen next? And that's you know,
you don't get much sleep thinking about what's gonna happen tomorrow.
So I mean, once you've kind of been in that position,
I think you tend to sleep a little bit better
after that. Yeah, playing from one or two back, it's
easy to stay aggressive and and chase it down. And

(01:35:30):
when you sleep on a lead, you gotta know you
gotta stay aggressive on how it's tough, but it's it's like, hey,
you gotta put yourself Hey, I'm two back. I gotta
I gotta keep keep playing aggressive. Well, I mean, I
look at you because the Canadian Open, I mean that's
you had the lead through four holes and I didn't
turn out for how you wanted to. But but that's fine.

(01:35:52):
But it's got a big national treasure to win that.
And you're like, hey, you kind of blew the lead. No,
I think, And I don't mean to go back to
the Canada thing, but I mean, heck, you talking about pressure.
Isn't that I mean maybe outside of of a major,
I mean it is outside of a major. Then that
was a big deal, you know, for me to be
in that position and to have a chance to win
on Sunday. Um, I actually slept great that Saturday night.
I think, you know, with everything that was going on

(01:36:12):
in the excitement and the energy of of everything on
the golf course. I was probably pretty tired, but you know,
I slept well. And that's Sunday around. I played great.
I I just didn't make the birdies down the stretch
that I needed to and uh and j D went
on a little bit of a terror and Birdie, I
think you Birdie like to that, Yeah, the last three
or something like that, like you lost to a guy
who can't you know, you know what I mean. Then
he went to number one in the world, So no

(01:36:33):
big deal, you know, just you know what happened. So
but no, I uh, I'm not I don't feel bad
about the way I played that term, but I definitely yeah,
I mean thankfully I've been in that position before, because
I think it would have been a tougher, tougher night
if I hadn't been in contention before, right, That's said
David Herne and Harris English, who of course, we'll tee
it up tomorrow at the Farmer's Insurance Open here Tory Pines. Guys,

Calves lost again last night. Tell me if you heard
this before, but the Calves lost again last night. You're like, man,
what is this Groundhog Day? There? Twenty seven and nineteen
and I know that. Look, I understand they've had some
bad januaries in the past. This one feels like an
especially bad January. Oh oh, but what if I have
I tried to convince you that the critique of Lebron,

(01:39:05):
even when Lebron statistically is having a great year, actually
shows you how good Lebron is. Get to that in
a moment. Dating can be fun, but when you're ready

to look, I have any ex girlfriends are on the
or on the the dating app. Um well, I I
understand that when you look around the calves and you're

(01:39:48):
like Isaiah Thomas, he stinks. Kyle KORVERI can guard Derrick
rose Man. I can't believe he was once an m VP.
It's really easy to pick apart the other guys and
to find their flaws and flyind the flaw, the inherent
flaw in how the team was constructed right. You have
too many guys who used to be alpha's that now
have to change their role. That's really hard. And then
you have too many guys that are specialists. And specialists

(01:40:11):
are good for specializing. You know, Kyle Corver, Channing Fry
come in and hit a shop. But when you have
to play them extended minutes, you just don't get the
You don't get the exact you don't get the same
kind of return on those minutes. All that said, um um,
like that being said, Like, look, Lebron does deserve a

(01:40:34):
a an amount of criticism, right, Like even the Kevin
Love stuff, like Kevin Love thing came out yesterday, that
Kevin Love they didn't believe he was sick and Isaiah
Thomas is going after him like love. Dude, if it's
your team and you're Lebron James, aren't you supposed to
be the one coming out of the meeting? Gun? We
got it? We had we had some defensive breakdowns, we
gave up one forty eight, We had a meeting in

(01:40:54):
the minds. But you know what, Kevin Love is my guy?
Did you hear that from Lebron? Did Lebron say, Hey,
Kevin Love is my guy. We won a championship with
Kevin Love. And can he be better? Sure, but we
can all be better. And he also could have said
Isaiah Thomas is my guy or Tristan Thompson is my god,
but he didn't. But he didn't. And so look, I'm

(01:41:20):
not saying Lebron James isn't a great player, but the
critique of Lebron, which is out there and should be
out there, and is fair only shows you that we
we hold him to a higher standard. Right, when the
Warriors don't play well and the Warriors aren't playing d
and they lose a couple of games, you'll hear Kevin
Durant said like, look, we thought we all gotta do.

(01:41:41):
You're you're just not hearing any critique of Lebron's lack
of leadership when he's the unquestioned leader and clearly his
guys are leaking these stories. Every story that's leaked out
has nothing to do with any sort of negativity towards Lebron.
How is that possible? It's not unless that's who's leaking
the story, Right, do you ever do that? Do you

(01:42:02):
ever do that to find out who leaked the story?
Or you go and you're like, who are these guys? When?
When when certain um writers have on the record sources
and then in later stories they have off the record
sources for those same teams, you're like, Oh, I know
where he got it from. He wrote a fluff article
about this guy, so now he could use that guy
as a source for other stories. Like, that's what happens.

(01:42:25):
Exactly what happens. We'll get a guy who's apparently an
Australian umaan. He's wearing an Australian soccer shirt. He's wearing
an Australian flag. Uh he is he is a strong
supporter of the Aussees. Is he down under the tree? Um?

(01:42:47):
I don't know. Is he know? He got? I got?
I never you're going without the best you can do. Oh,
you didn't come up with anything because because that was bad.
It's bad. It was down under the tree. No matter
what I do. Doug hadn't hate. I didn't hate that
was that was really what. It's one thing to do

(01:43:09):
a cheesy one, but you thought you killed represented. I
think this is because Dan golfed far better than was
so bad. I think we've got some media members from
playing in the ProAm next year. It was the name
of our comedian. He's actually really funny. I've seen his
stand up stuff. Um Davis. Uh, James James Davis, James Davis,

(01:43:34):
Chris Rock. Great, dude. It was not Chris Rock Black
comedian Chris Rock. No, that's like, uh, but you know
it was disappointing. He didn't go into any routine at all.
He was a serious golfer, Like, hey, dude, you're funny.
You're supposed to be funny. He's like, I hate when
people do that. Yeah, it's still you're a comedian, right,
Like if if if if I was playing with a doctor,

(01:43:57):
you know, and somebody gets hurt, I would love for
the doctor to be the one who helps somebody out right.
That's why I've always said, like, podiatrists aren't really doctors. Right,
somebody is suffering a heart attack on an airplane and
you say, is there a doctor in the halse pediatrist
doesn't go like, yeah, right here, I got your help. Right,
But for a comedian, I would have I thought there
would have been at least some form of entertainment in

(01:44:19):
between holes. My my, my, wrong. Yeah, I would say,
you're wrong, Yeah, you don't need to go in the
full routine, but an occasional quip or comment or making
fun of my swing, Like I would have actually welcomed that,
because you can get away with things when you're a comic, right,
you can say things You're like, oh, that's man, that's me,
Like now he's a comic, Like okay, that's okay. I was,

(01:44:42):
I was. I was fine with it because he's gotta
he's gonna do a show, tonight. You know, he probably
did on the last night as well. And this is
this is his getaway. You know, that's he was serious
about golf. He was a really good player. He was
a serious about golf. If you're I have to do
this whenever I go to like, well that's one of

(01:45:02):
my life. Lets me out of the house and we
go to some couple's party whatever. I mean, I don't
love it, but I do get asked about like sports, like, hey,
who you like this year? You can pick again Syracuse. Right,
Just just the way that you're talking about it shows
that you clearly dislike doing that. I do. So why
would you want the guy who's trying to just spend

(01:45:23):
some time out golfing. Clearly he said he's good at
golf and he's probably into it being able to golf
with the professional So he clearly doesn't want to do
a comedy. What Doug doesn't know. It's a team, but
he wasn't funny. James was mad at you because you
didn't do what does the fox say, Beth the nighthole?
He was like, what is going on here? Yeah? I

(01:45:45):
don't believe that to be true. I was let's just
be let's just be honest. The Doug got Lave Show
is broadcasting live from the Farmer's Insurance Open at Tory Pines.
Visit Farmer's Insurance Open dot com tour and info, or
join the conversation at hashtag f I O eighteen. We
are all right? How about this? We will play what

(01:46:09):
did the Fox say? After we find out what's going
on in the world of sports and David gascon David,
you have any other assistant coaches leaving years on the
state and go to Uta. No, unfortunately, dude not. It's
pretty flat on the college front. But I do appreciate
you asking about that. We'll start things off in the
NBA Sacramento Kings Deer and Fox listed us day to
day with tightness and his ams will see what he

(01:46:30):
does throughout the week. Grizzlies Tyreek Evans questionable tonight against
the San Antonio Spurs, managed and Nobley he'll be missing
an action not playing tonight for San Antonio. Meanwhile, Jamal
Crawford he's listed as probable for tonight, but Jimmy Butler
is doubtful for the game with a knee injury. Rodney
Hood is out in for Utah and also two pacers
Darren Collinson and Miles Turner are also not playing tonight

(01:46:52):
against the Phoenix Suns. Switching over quickly. The Major League
Baseball Tampa Bay raise ace Chris Archer told the Tampa
Bay Times he does not expect to be traded before
the start of the season. And John Morosi is reporting
that you Darvish is like with a sign with the
team at some point this week in the NFL with
a team or something with it. Is it still the Twins, David?

(01:47:12):
Is that who they're still point towards. They're looking at
the Cubbies, Cubs, Twins, Dodges all on that front. Brewers
made what may have made an offer to Milwaukee for Dan.
Results are a survey of slow. We need to hire

(01:47:39):
good people business. Too many disconnected systems. I can't see
what's happening in mind. No, it sounds like in the
NFL cam diagnosed with damage in this name. Just don't
expect dark projects even eating every now you can run

(01:48:11):
your business from a dashboard on your phone. That's one
system contractor a franchise. Dot Com towards every now this
year dot Com slash fast. What are you saying by her?

(01:48:33):
Jarvis Landry, No, I agree with I. I'm what, I
don't think he's worth thirteen million dollars. I don't think
so either. But I also I think there's a balance
between what he's worth and does he have value. In
order to keep it right, we're just gonna let him,
let him, let him walk. Like do I think Odell
Beckham Jr. Is Are paying the ass? Yeah? But I
also think that you better have him on your football team.

(01:48:55):
And like, look at Jake Cutler as his quarterback this year,
Ryan Tannehill in the past. It's not like he's got
Joe mont Hanathrow on the phone. Go. But that could
be part of the problem because if you actually have
a quarterback, maybe you're saying, alright, we know our quarterback
is going to be there. But if you're gonna invest
thirteen million dollars into a wide receiver that you don't
know if Ryan Tannehill is your guy, and if he
isn't all of us and you're like, why in the

(01:49:16):
world are we paying a wide receiver who runs ten
yard routes thirteen million dollars a year. That's where I
think that the issue could come with the Dolphins. Yeah, Now,
I look I I agree with you that I'm I
may keep your costs low guy, especially on you know,
it's it's all about your wins above replacement, right, Are
you replaceable? Can we find a guy for a million
dollars or two million dollars that maybe doesn't have a

(01:49:39):
hundred catches, maybe has seventy catches, but the extra money
left over allows us to get you know, better offensive
line play, get a replacement for j Ji or whatever.
But I do think that we would all agree Jarvis
Landry has a lot of talent and he has been
a productive wide receiver, and there there is some value there.

(01:49:59):
Whether 're not it's a thirteen million dollar value, But
it's fascinating that the how he and Odell Beckham Jr.
Are best friends. Oh b J is obviously seen as
the superior one, even though he was hurt most of
this year, but they both have some similarities in that
the numbers are fine, but those numbers that you're putting
up don't necessarily help you win games. Don't help you

(01:50:21):
win games. Um And DeVante Parker too, is a guy
that I think that if you talk about ceiling, they
feel probably has a bigger ceiling. So if you're gonna
pay a wide receiver money or fingers crossed hoping that
it could be DeVante Parker down the line instead of
maybe giving it to just Jervis Line. For Fox Sports
Radios broadcasting Life from the Farmer's Insurance Open in San Diego,

(01:50:43):
let's find out what the Fox says. Foxy All right,
Clay Travis out kicked the coverage is the morning show
here on Fox Sports Radio. UM. He said this about
what the Cleveland Cavaliers should do right now. Cleveland is
one half game out of fourth place in the awful
Eastern Conference. Everybody is talking about the NBA trade deadline,

(01:51:06):
which I believe is February eight. Am, I correct in
that that the trade deadline is February eight, and what
the Calves might try to do to make their team
better as they come down the stretch. If you are
right now in Calves management, don't you have to consider
exploring the possibility of trading Lebron James for this reason,

(01:51:31):
He's not under contract next year, he can walk and
you can receive nothing in compensation. The Calves have a low, low,
low chance of winning a title this year with their
current roster. Don't you have to turn the page if
you are the Calves, and admit that Lebron is not

(01:51:52):
going to resign with you, and admit that his run
of championships and I think NBA Finals appearances is the
likely to end this year, and try and go get
something for Lebron James. And that's one of those things
that sounds great, right like in in theory, it sounds

(01:52:12):
great like you're gonna lose Lebron James. Why don't you
trade Lebron James and get a king's ransom for the
best player in the NBA. That does sound great. The
reality of it is one Cleveland's gonna convince themselves, Hey,
we've been through Um we've we've been through tough times before.
We still have Lebron will figure it out in the end. Secondly,

(01:52:36):
you just you're you're get you're waving the white flag,
waving the white flag, and um, they've struggled in January
in the past. Hell, he's taken you know, almost a
month off at times in the middle season in the past,
and they've been fine. And whether or not they're going
to be fine, they're gonna convince themselves that they make
one move and it eventually will work out, and if

(01:52:57):
it's not working out, it's only because they haven't had
enough time time to work it out. So the first
thing is Cleveland UH is going to operate under the
assumption that they can figure things out between now and
once they get to the playoffs. The second part, which
is super interesting, is, um, why would anybody want to

(01:53:19):
welcome in Lebron James and trade away whatever pieces it
would take to get him for a quarter of a season.
It just doesn't Again, It's like one of those things
that yes, is it. Is it a depreciating asset because
it's gonna be worth nothing to you because he's gonna leave. Yeah,
but that doesn't mean that you can somebody's just gonna
trade guy for guy. You're gonna end up getting a
bad contract and return as opposed at least being out

(01:53:42):
from Lebron's contract. Here's Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharp discussing
LaVar as the new head coach of li Angelo and
Lamello's team is actually assistant coach of their team in Lithuania.
No coach will ever get more out of the three
ball sons the way Leavar does. They they really respond
to him. I believe that LaVar could coach Alonzo better

(01:54:04):
than Luke Walton. But is he ever gonna be a
Laker coach. No, he's not. So in the end, he's
just gonna have to Alonzo is gonna have to accept
the fact that his father is never gonna coach him again. Yeah,
I don't. I mean, like, look, he could he coach
in AU basketball and he has three sons. Absolutely, um

(01:54:25):
And to people who are being critical of Luke's coaching,
last time I checked, the Lakers had only won three
in a row. But I believe they've won seven of
their last nine games. All those seven of the last
nine games are since LaVar said that Luke had lost
the team. But I don't know. I mean the idea

(01:54:46):
that he's their best coach they're playing against put together
teams of teenagers when he's an assistant coach in Lithuani.
When they play real European professional basketball, they barely play
because they're not good enough. So yeah, I guess he's
the best AU coach for the ball brothers when they
play AU basketball together, but in real basketball, he's not

(01:55:07):
really a real basketball coach. Say, I mean, remember one
of the what what they've had to do with the
Lakers is teach a Lonzo ball how to play pick
and roll basketball, which is a huge portion of what
you do, how to play within the shock, like how
to play with more energy, how to play defense. All
of these things which he should have obtained being coached

(01:55:30):
by his dad, who was a player on on some
level before he ever got to college, let alone what
he got in his seven months or so on campus
at u c l A. Alright, coming up next to
the newest Hall of Fame class of Hall of of
Baseball Hall of Famers will be announced tonight. I'll give
you my thoughts on who should and who should not

(01:55:52):
get in. That's I'm coming next in the Doug Got
The Show Fox Sports Radio. Car shopping can be confusing

Sports Radio is broadcasting live from the Farmer's Insurance Open
here in beautiful San Diego. I can't thank the folks
at Farmers enough. Man They've been amazing rolling out the
red carpet, not just for the players and this incredible
uh field that's going to compete at the Farmer's Insurance

(01:56:32):
Open starting tomorrow Torrey Pines, but also to us UM
and so a special thanks go out to all the
folks at Farmers who have helped set up this remote
and our partnership with them leading up to this event.
Let's get to the press, the press buyer, damn buy

(01:56:55):
what he got for me. I've got seven stories for you,
Doug Ring Up. At the top of the hour, the
Baseball Hall of Fame announcements will be made on who
will make up the class of eighteen. They got Chipper
Jones coming in, Vladimir Guerrero, Trevor Hoffman was just on
the verge last year, all up for induction to Cooperstown.

(01:57:18):
All right, so I have a I have a couple
of things on on Hall of Fame, right. I don't
believe it should be the Hall of Good. They've allowed
some guys that are static Ac Cruers Hall of Good
to be in. I didn't think Rock Raines after a
decade is suddenly a Hall of Famer. I thought last
year's class was ridiculously weak. You had a couple of
steroid guides and rock ranes. This year's class is a
little bit better. Um Flagg Arrow is a hard one best,

(01:57:41):
but he is best bad ball hitter of all time,
best bad ball hit of all time. But are you
okay with that? So if you're the best of something
in the history of baseball, you should get in. Trevor
Hoffman probably. Look, he's not Mayana Rivera, but he was
the Padres Mario Rivera. He's the best San Diego pod
raised picture of all time, so he should get it.

(01:58:02):
I'm okay with it. Other names go ahead, you have
got what drummer, Rolfman, Vladimir Guerrero, Edgar Martinez best one
of the better d h is of all time, and
Edgar Martinez. Um Like, Look, if David Ortiz is gonna
be a Hall of Famer, Edgar Martinez should be a
Hall of Famer. Well, Chipper, Chipper is gonna get hit
first ballot. Chipper will be like the Battle and then

(01:58:24):
it leads us to Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds. I
wouldn't put him in. I wouldn't put him in. And
do people who say there are others that use steroids. Look,
I I disagree with putting pad Rodriguez in. Um. The
difference for Clemens, the difference for Bonds is uh that
we have no idea what was real and what was

(01:58:46):
the creation of chemistry the second half of their careers
and once they sold their soul, they got hey, this
whole Hey, everybody speeds, You're on You're on her everybody's speeds.
I got pulled over. I was keeping up with the
floor of traffic. You're the one who got caught. Bonds
got caught due to his relationship with Balco, and Roger
Clemens got caught due to the Kirk Rodomski situation. I

(01:59:07):
would not vote them in personally told me also a
name that's popped up. But I want to go back
to the Bonds Clements thing for the fact of the
conversation now, because as you mentioned last year, you're like, Okay, well,
what is what's up with this class? Is this? Is
this a strong enough class and we're putting steroid guys in? Now?
The conversation, Doug, isn't who's getting in. It's the percentage

(01:59:29):
of votes for Bonds and Clements. And I think that's
interesting because when they first were on the ballot, it
was a lower number and it was a side note
to who was getting in. And now they because they've
moved up, and you're getting new voters and and guys
revealing their votes showing that they're voting for bonds, they're
voting for Clemens. I think that this conversation now really
heats up over these next two years. Like I, I
disagree with it. I think it's embarrassing to the sport.

(01:59:50):
But I also know know that this sport has pushed
Alex Rodriguez on the Fox and now on the ESPN,
and that's a two time steroid user, a guy who
served the longest suspension the history of the sport. So
I think the change is coming. I'm just telling you personally,
I wouldn't vote them in. I don't think that's a
good representation what your sport is. And Jim tell me's

(02:00:11):
the perfect example. If not for the steroid guys, Jim
tell Me, hitting six hundred home runs would be considered
one of the greatest home run hitters of all time. Unfortunately,
steroid guys have Steroid guys have made him look like
he's just another home run hitter. So what's up, what's
up with with with wine? Guy at Starry Pine Security

(02:00:33):
is taking care of the guy who chimed in earlier.
And if you hear the podcast, you can hear the
guys chiming the Dougs, cab steak, one of the calves
gonna play defense. There's a guy he's like wearing a polo,
some tight site tight pants, looks like a regular golf fan,
but he's clearly had too bunch of drinking. He's got
a big, big, like big a cup of wine that
he's walking around with and he was just walking behind

(02:00:56):
security lines and now all of a sudden he's got
like six cops. It looks right now he looks like
the white Bronco and the cops look like the cop
cars following the story. He's walking very cavalier around here.
It is he is, but but now he's walking. Now,
he's walking cavalier and there's like six policemen walking behind him.
He may he may, he may he may be doing

(02:01:18):
the old uh you know, leave while act like you're
leading the parade while they're really marching out of town. Yeah,
Patriots said at Rob Gronkowski, listed on the Patriots Initial
Injury Report, with a concussion for Super Bowl fifty two.
It seems so far away, right, all um, Like, Look,

(02:01:38):
concussions are weird. They can pop up and you know
you cannot pass the protocol. Does anybody think that Rob
Gronkowski is really not gonna play in the Super Bowl?
Although look, he didn't play a couple of years ago
when they lost the Giants, didn't play last year in
Super Bowl as well, So wouldn't that be amazing if
if Gronk, as good as he is, doesn't play in
the Super Bowl, Because it doesn't that hit How about

(02:01:58):
more n I felt? Newsworthy reports the Steelers and running
back Levan Bell are quote a lot end quote closer
on a contract extension than the sides were a year ago.
So he's not gonna retire, maybe not retire, maybe getting
that long term deal from Pittsburgh. At least these sides
are closer than they were in and and it looks
we said this, what do you do if you're Pittsburgh

(02:02:20):
you have arguably the most talented running back in the league.
But it wasn't unhappy. It wasn't it was contract. He
wasn't showing up on time. So if you give him
more money. Why would he have why would he change
that behavior? I don't know. I I think I actually
move on, although I find myself more and more not
wanting to pay anybody in the NFL. Nobody's worth it,

(02:02:43):
like really, like what do you think about? Like? I
like thoughts to myself, why don't I want no one
to get any new contracts? But it's because hey, get
a young guy and draft him in the third round,
bring him back. I don't know. There's that's Look, that's
what's happened in the NBA. That's what happen in Major
League Baseball is get guys that are in a club,
control all making, you know, making reasonable money for as

(02:03:03):
many of those guys as you can. And then if
you have to go out and spend on a guy here,
a guy there, you can maybe then you overspend. Raiders
quarterback Derek Carr says he wants new head coach John
Gruden yeah, to be hard on him this season. How
about that ask for and you shall receive. Jets quarterback
Josh mccoud open to a return to the Jets, and

(02:03:24):
if he doesn't go back to New York, still says
he intends I'm playing in Yeah, I mean, he'll probably
a backup if he goes elsewhere with the Jets, though,
you know they're gonna they're going to uh, they'll they'll
draft a quarterback and he'll likely be the veteran. They're
not gonna you know, as long as he doesn't do
the um do the Ryan Fitzpatrick where he says, I
had a good year, left let me demand starting quarterback money,

(02:03:45):
hold out, and then have a complete disastrous season. I
think he'll be fine. Okay, okay, Jet fans, you may
get Josh mccon, you may not. But we don't know yet.
But the fact is, when the expectations are low, that's
when he shines. And when they're high, that doesn't live
up to him. And I think going to the Jets,
we thought they were gonna be the worst team in
the league. All of a sudden, he had a good year.
All right, let's uh wrap up this, uh preet, No,

(02:04:07):
that's serious. Pregame dot COM's and Fox Sports radios. R J.
Bell says in a tweets and I'm quoting famous World series,
let it ride better. In negotiations with MGM to make
the biggest sports bet in Las Vegas history on the
Eagles to win Super Bowl fifty two, upwards of eight
figures expected on that historic bet. I've i've I've basically

(02:04:30):
given away what my pick will be, you know, And
anytime you have, um, anytime you have some defense, which
is widely considered the best in football, and you've got
some shakiness over on the other side, Like, I don't know,
I kind of think the Eagles are gonna win this game.
I kind of think, especially when the line is now

(02:04:50):
and we don't know if Grons can even play, I
think it'd be a super smart bet. And obviously a
guy who's bet huge number is gonna do so in
Vegas on that very same line, BA get out there
and pressed. That was the press. My picks were amazing
last night in college basketball. You're welcome America five and
O on those picks. Uh. Whereas my picks in many
instances have sucked in the past. When they're good, I'll

(02:05:13):
tell you they're good. Um, like Boston College to cover
tonight at Syracuse seven point dogs at Syracuse. Don't have
to win, just gotta keep just just gotta keep it close,
just gotta keep it close. Um, buy, are you are
outstanding today? On in the pro am. Um. I believe
they will be erecting a statue of of you either

(02:05:34):
this year or next year. Actually they've named the location.
They're gonna put it where the lady was sitting when
I heard chair. So I'll be on the North Course
to the left of the fairway, right above the canyon
where the ball actually could have gone if the lady's
chair wasn't sitting there. So let's get our thanks to
the folks at Farmers for having us out here at
the Farmers Insurance Open. Tiger is gonna tee off I

(02:05:55):
think early tomorrow, right, just one forty eastern ten forty
local times, Okay, so that's that's that's us. It's the
primetime window tomorrow and then it's the early He'll do
the early window on Friday in the North Course, which
he doesn't have nearly the same TV coverage and the
course hope expectations are he plays in the Farmer's Insurance
Open on Saturday and Sunday. Kind of announced his formal

(02:06:17):
return to the sport. This is the Doug Gottlip Show.
