Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening Boom, What Up America? Doug Otlip Show Live
from Super Week in the Twin Cities Minneapolis, St. Paul,
presented by Black Rifle Coffee. Uh, I have um. This
is my six straight Super Bowl broadcasting live at this
time slot, and normally it still works for this week.
But I'll tell you why that's a little bit of
(00:22):
a change. Her radio row. Getting to the super Bowl
on Monday is a lot like what it's like for
me to get to a dinner party with my wife.
My wife is a if you say the party starts
at seven, she is there before seven. Why would you
show up late when it says seven, right? So I
can't tell you how many times we've gone to somebody
(00:42):
else's house who's having a party. You show up, the
husband ain't dressed, the wife's the wife's kind of making
sure everything is clean. So I help everybody set up
their party, and of course first one who arrived generally
first one to leave. Getting to a party that starts
at seven. At seven is what it's like to get
to a Super Bowl Super Weak on a Monday, Right.
It's just a bunch of radio, radio hacks and TV
(01:05):
hacks hanging out waiting for the former and current NFL
players to arrive and the fans to arrive. Usually Monday
is dead. Now there is there is a change this year. Okay,
I'm I'm big on cutting out the middleman. Like Bowling
Branch is one of our big sponsors, and what they've
done is cut out the middleman. They're like, why go
to a store where Bowling Branch gets paid, you know,
(01:27):
like where everybody has to get a piece, basically what
Mineapolis St. Paul has done, Like, hey, let's cut out
the middleman. All you overweight radio hacks are the same.
You all want to eat all different kinds of foods
that aren't good for you. Let's put you in the
food court. What a great idea, right, Plus it creates
some kind of artificial traffic, so there's people around. Normally
(01:48):
Radio Row is in like a convention center, and it's
like we're sequestered, like there's some kind of special thing
about being a radio uh sports radio host, and no
real fans can get in there. If they can, it's
all most like they're looking at you like you're a
monkey inside of a cage. Right now, We're like kind
of it's kind of like the country of buying four
the people. All right, we're next to a shake Shock
(02:10):
and a there's a Pokey place and a Starbucks and
uh they got a little bit of everything here. And
all the national radio hosts that were sent are hanging around,
so we kind of have some traffic. There's kind of
this is a party which people actually showed up a
little bit earlier too. We got a good group of
guests today. Obviously the names get stronger as the week
goes on. But we're not gonna turn this in to
(02:33):
uh me turning the mic over to somebody else radio,
the way that oftentimes super weekend spiral out of control. Hey,
I want to ask you three football questions and then
give me your pitch, you know, for Dr Schulz or whatever.
Now that'll be a little bit of that. I'm not
gonna lie to you. But we have a ton of
good guests. But we also have some interesting topics. I
want to get to the Michigan State scandal. We'll do so. Um.
(02:55):
I don't know if you saw this, but the Cleveland
Indians are going to stop using Chief Wahoo in their
stadium and stop selling their merchandise outside of Northern Oton
North eastern Ohio whatever part of Ohio. Cleveland's in Sarry,
Ohio anyway, in two tho, Okay, look, I don't want
(03:16):
to go on this huge rant about why I don't
believe it's truly and terribly offensive the Chief Wahoo logo
because it's a it's basically a cartoon character. And is
there a negative depiction? I guess you could. You could
take it that way of the smiling, red, redskinned Indian.
By the way, Native Americans are not Indians, right anyway,
(03:38):
I do think it's funny. Though something is supposedly offensive,
so we're not gonna use it, but we're gonna wait
another year. So it's offensive, but not so offensive. We're
gonna pull it right now. And oh yeah, by the way,
though it's offensive, they're still gonna sell the merchandise in
the local area. That's what we've And so the story
that this will become is when are the Redskins gonna
change their logo? That's what's gonna happen. Super weak is
(04:01):
major League Baseball. They have reacted like not really And
the only reason this became a big thing was because
the Indians went to the World Series. If the Indians
sucked like the Indians used to suck, then nobody would care.
But like went to the world just like, oh my god,
they still use that logo. It's so offensive, even though
it's not really offensive, not really offensive. I actually this
(04:25):
is the great parallel. I saw something and and forgive me,
but it was actually on Facebook and it was actually
really educational, okay, And it was about tipping and the
and and the thing on and if you're on Facebook,
you'll see it. And we're streaming this live on Facebook
as well, which is about tipping, which is tipping actually
goes back to post slavery and the idea that uh
(04:47):
people wanted to pay uh you wanted to pay less
than what minimum wages and they're still kind of a
grandfather did in clause where in some states you don't
have to pay minimum wage for tip based um you know,
service based business employees or whatever. Anyway that there's a
racial aspect. There's a racial aspect to tipping, and like, wow,
(05:10):
I had no idea, I had no idea. I use
that as that's the opposite kind of of what what
the Redskins logo is and what the Indians logo is
when it was created there was no intent to be offensive.
Matter of fact, it was the opposite of that. It
was actually intended to honor a proud culture of Native
(05:32):
Americans and warriors and Indians and whatever. But now we
take it as we take it into context. Now we
take it in the two thousand and seventeen contexts, which is,
how could you call somebody who is a Native American
to send a redskin or portray them as having red skin,
which we all know that Indians do not have in
fact redskins. Um. But whatever, this that's the time in
(05:55):
which we live. So the story is the Indians won't
use chief while whose logo next year? So somehow they'll
be pressure this week for Rodriguella answer, why an't you
gonna stop using the redskin logo? To which the answer
is probably never, kids, probably never. And then there's the
Tom Brady versus w e I. Um, I understand that
(06:18):
there's this thought another distraction for the Patriots. Tom Brady
was supposed to be on w e I today. It's
a local sports station in Boston, and he does a
weekly spot and uh, he chose to cancel it because
and a Friday night host was giving a review of
(06:42):
the Tom Versus Time face again Facebook taking full Facebook
documentary about Tom Brady's life, in which he was kind
of here's here's what he said. I tried to come
on this show for many years and showed you guys
a lot of respect of always tried to come on
and do a good job for you guys. So you know,
(07:03):
it's very disappointing when you hear that. Certainly with my
daughter or any child, you know, they certainly don't deserve that.
So I'll obviously evaluate whether I want to come on
this show again. So I really don't have much to
say this morning. That's fine. Um, I understand, that's totally fine. Well,
maybe I'll speak with you guys some other time. Absolutely fine,
we understand that all. That's obviously. Oh and then and
(07:25):
they got the click on air, which is always strong.
The click on air on Kirk, the Kirk and Callahan
Show is very strong. Um. Look, I don't blame I
guess I don't blame Brady for being ticked off. I do.
I don't really understand if he heard it, or if
some if his wife heard it or somebody related to him,
as like Friday night, are you driving around late Friday
night listen to EI that I kind of feel like,
(07:47):
or maybe hope that Tom Brady has something better going
on on Friday night. And of course when it gets
relayed to you, if you didn't hear it yourself, it
gets worse. What you call my daughter a piss ant?
Why are you calling? And I don't even I don't
know the radio host name, and I don't think we'll
ever know the radio host name. I do think it
was it was wasn't an innocuous comment, but it was
kind of a he was trying to make it out
(08:10):
to be what Tom Versus Time was, because I actually
watched Tom Versus Time last night, which is boy it it.
It's supposed to be real, but it really feels kind
of like a cheesy look at Tom Brady trying to
portray his life as a little bit different than it
probably actually is. But that that's what reality shows are.
Documentaries are about somebody's life anyway. But if you think
(08:33):
this is a distraction, I mean, remember you go back
a couple of weeks ago and ESPN did the story
that had Robert Craft at odds with Bill Belichick at
odds with Tom Brady, Like that's a real story. That
Brady celebrated when Jimmy Garoppolo was traded. And if that
doesn't break it a fissure in it doesn't make a
(08:54):
fissure in the team. A local radio host who no
one actually knew existed before Tom Brady brought it up.
That's whole thing. If Tom Brady didn't bring it up,
no one would actually know what has happened. This is
a tree in a forest type deal. Do if you
think that has any effect in this football game? Um,
I can't help you. I can't help you. Does it
(09:16):
make it interesting? Yeah? But you know, being anti calling
kids names is like being anti cancer. Like, get inline,
everybody's anti in cancer. I am really against domestic violence,
so am I? So? I mean, like, look, I don't
know anybody who disagrees with Tom Brady whether or not
you should have conducted the interview or brought attention to
the interview or uh made these Morning Kirk and Callahan,
(09:40):
which is actually a pretty good show, somehow combined them
with what happens Friday night overnight or whatever. I don't know. Look,
I know we feel some of that. We have We'll
have a Uh. I'm sure I've kicked somebody off a
wouldn't come on with Colin or wouldn't come on with
maybe Dan? And you know, I know Clay has said
said some things that other people have gotten upset about.
(10:01):
I will say this, It plays down to the lowest
common denominator UM stereotype of sports radio shock jockey host right, like,
did you is that really? Was that really your takeaway?
You couldn't have just said his daughter appeared to be whiny?
You know. And if you have kids like yeah kids,
(10:21):
or if you get kids the wrong spot there whiny
like I got great kids, they can really be whiny.
I have three children, Okay, we try and raise them
as well as we can. And you know what they
do before they go to bed tonight, Dad, Can you
give me a glass of water every night? Like you
got broken kneecaps? Can we give? Can you give me
a glass of water? And if you catch him in
(10:44):
the wrong moment, they can appear to be whiney pissants,
they can, but they're generally good kids. My guess is
that guy has no kids. My guess is that guy
isn't long for the job at e I UM. And
I'm not being super critical of Brady because I do
understand that somebody you know calling your child a name
(11:06):
can really be alarming. But I don't know if he
didn't bring to anybody's attention, it wouldn't have been brought
to anybody's attention. It's tree in the forest. But I
also think this has zero effect on what everybody cares about,
and that's who wins the Super Bowl? None? None? Can
they protect Brady? Dn Brady stepped into the throws? And
can the Patriots not bend but not break the way
(11:28):
they have all season long? That's all that really matters.
It's all that really matters. Are you can check his house?
We're streaming this show live on on Facebook. Uh. Who
has the edge on Sunday? Tom Brady and the Patriots
offense or the Eagles and their defense? Right? It's the
(11:51):
movable objects against the irresistible force, right as I get that? Right? Yeah?
I tending to butcher that one. It's the moving object
gets there presistible force. H. We'll discuss with Frank Schoa
from Yahoo Sports. He'll join us upcoming next. But first,

Let's welcome in Frank Schwab. You read his work at
Yahoo Sports the Shutdown Corner. There's a great job covering
(13:39):
the National Football League all all year long, not just
all season long. Um, it's it's weird because, Uh, the
Super Bowl at times can feel like a Final Four
in that the final four almost always has one participaner like,
I can't believe they're here, right, And I guess I'm
like the Patriots to start the season before Edelman got hurt,
We're an overwhelming favorite to get here. Um. The the
(14:03):
Eagles would technically be a surprise based upon how last
year ended. On the other hand, if you watch them
all season long, these are two one seeds, it's not
really a surprise. What are your thoughts on on? Uh,
this feels like a very legitimate Super Bowl because you
have arguably the best NFC and best AFC. Obviously went's
going down change and that's the thing that that's what
makes it different. That's what makes the Eagles the underdogs.
(14:25):
They were gonna be underdogs anyway, because the Patriots are
US Steel by this point, like everybody hates them, everybody
wants them to lose. But the Eagles having to go
with Foalds in this game does make them the underdog.
I think it just makes them such a unique one seed.
Like you said, it's it's just different. And I think
that part of the reason everybody's rooting for the Eagles,
not the only reason, obviously, is this whole Nick Foles story.
If he comes in and he's the guy. I don't
(14:49):
think that's at all why people are rooting for Filling.
I think because people hate the Patriots, have about anybody,
Like I heard from like people saying they were rootting
from the Jaguars, Like you probably don't even know what
the Jaguars existed days ago, but all of a sudden,
we're rooting for the Jaguars because it's not the Patriots.
The one thing about Fools is he is getting he
is getting an amount of credit to which I'm not
(15:10):
totally sure. He's deserved. And here's I look, he played
really well last week. I'm not trying to dismiss that
at all. But he's not the traditional journeyman backup right.
He had one of the great seasons of NFL history.
Correct if the third still all time and passer rating
single season is Nick Foles two thousand thirteen. And he's
not just a guy off the street. But you know,
(15:32):
it goes to the point where all we do is
analyzed quarterbacks. Though if the Eagles one, oh my god,
it must have been Nick Foles. He must have played great. No,
this is a team, this is but that's what I'm
most impressed. But he did what he did play and
and and they showed they were they were willing to
do what the Vikings the week before weren't willing to
do what uh the Jaguars weren't willing to do, which
(15:53):
is have a lead, but don't play like you have
a leading gets super tight. They kept throwing the pushing
the ball down the field with that lead, and they
put the they put the steak uh in the Vikings heart.
I mean, I thought that was really impressive from Doug Peterson,
another guy who has been at times maligned as a
head coach who proved it in the biggest game and
not only could be game plan around his quarterback, but
(16:14):
also they were willing to go for it and not
play concerned. And I think that that's what the Jaguar
screwed up, and the Eagles won't screw that up. If
they're gonna lead in this Super Bowl. Doug Peterson's gonna
keep his foot on the gas. He's gonna keep going
for it on fourth down because that's what they do
their second league this year and fourth ound attempts. You know,
the Packers were first, but they were going for it
on fourth down because they'll run the football occasion. See
that's the thing. It's like the Falcons that screw that
(16:35):
up in retrospect, but I respected at least the thought
behind it of we can't let our foot off the
gas or the Patriots are gonna come get us. And
they did anyway, But I think that you have to
have the mentality against the Patriots. The Jaguars didn't. They
screwed it up, but the Eagles are gonna have that height.
If we have a lead, We're not We're gonna keep
throwing the ball We're gonna keep playing our game because
no lead is safe against the Patriots. We've seen the
(16:56):
time and again, and Peterson's the right guy to have
that mindset. He's going to be aggressive. This is the
Doug Gotlip Show Fox Sports Radio franchoad from y'all who
Sports is our guest. Um, I'm gonna make a bold statement.
It'll sound like a hot take, but it's really not
because there's a bunch of thought put into it. That's
what happens when you get to super weak early. You're
sitting around a hotel, are you? Like? Where is everybody right? Exactly? Um?
(17:18):
I believe this is the last super Bowl of its kind,
the last one we'll see in kind of a nondescript
Midwestern city. That stadium is out of this world, the best.
That's probably the best stadium in sports right now. Right.
But l A's building one, which is going to be better.
Vegas is building one, which is gonna be better, and
so you're gonna and Miami has been redone. Um, and
(17:40):
like look the I know one no city on Earth
deals with cold weather better than the Twin Cities. Right.
You can when you're downtown, you can go you can
go skywalk to skywalk to skywalk. The problem is at
some point you still gotta step outside, and that just
does not fit the idea of a super Bowl. I
would guess that this is probably the last time the
(18:00):
NFL throws a bone to the Indies. The Minneapolis is
the detroits, the cold weather cities. Indis a different case.
Indie's really good at hosting big events. You've got it's
it's great downtown. And I think that the NFL always
wants to reward teams to get a new stadium built.
That's number one on the list. That's why Minnesota has
a super Bowl, not because they're necessarily Wow, Minneapolis deserves one. No,
(18:22):
you went out, as callous as this sounds, and got
taxpayers to pay for the stadium. We're going to reward
her with a super Bowl. Who else is going to
be doing that? I mean, Cleveland is not building a dome.
You need a dome. Cleveland's not doing that. Since he's
not doing that, screen BA is never gonna do that.
In Denver, They're never gonna do that there where I'm from.
So it's just there's only so many cities that even
fit that criteria of dome Stadium, new stadium. I also
(18:44):
think correlating with no l A, there was no l
A state Vegas Vase, It's gonna be unbelieved. Vegas is
gonna be Everybody's gonna want to Vegas super Bowl every
year because that city does big events. And also, like
if you're a Patriots fan, maybe you come out here
because you've never been to one of these super Bowls
and you just, hey, once in a lifetime. I but
who is coming to the super Bowl if you're a
Patriots fan, I mean Eagles fans maybe because you want
(19:04):
to see the one. But you're coming, it's gonna be
nine degrees and I'm not trying to complain about the cold.
As born Wisconsin, I know about cold weather, But who's
coming here? If you're just a fan, I'd rather stay
at home and it's climate control and just watch them.
You gotta make it a destination super Bowl, and this
is not a destination super I love Minneapolis. It's a
great city. It is a great it's great summer city.
But of course the crazy part is they actually have
(19:25):
an outdoor baseball stadium, right Yeah, Like that's that's just
it's like nuts. They play indoors in football, they play
outdoors in baseball. It seems like the opposite should be
at least on some level true. Okay, let's get to
the Patriots. What is at steak for bread? Is there
anything to lose by losing? And that's the thing. I
don't think there is, because the people who don't want
to give him credit as better than Joe Montana, but
(19:46):
they're never gonna give him credit. He could win tend
super Bowls. They just hate the guy for the flake
gate whatever reason. I think you intend super bowls, you'll
get boy, I don't know. And he's won five and
there's still people out there saying, guy, he's no. Joe Montana,
he's no. And I would just kills CONTENTA is incomparable
because he went four now, but it's ridiculous. It's it's
better to make it seven times and lose twice than
(20:07):
it doesn't make it four times and not lose. I mean,
Joe Montana lost an NFC championship game against the Giants
in why don't we count that? It's, you know, it's
better to get there and lose and not get there
at all. But I and I think people right thinking,
people who don't hate the Patriots already think Brady is
the greatest ever, loses doesn't matter. Okay, so can you
who would you rather have as your quarterback? Aaron Rodgers,
(20:28):
A Town Brady. That's a great question, I'd say, Aaron Rodgers. Okay,
so but so and I but I have a hand. No,
it's a great But you were just thirty seconds before
You're like, everybody knows Brady is the greatest. But I
think you resume the No, there's no comparison in the resume.
Brady has the greatest resume. And if that I will
agree to that. We will agree. And I think it's
(20:49):
a different argument that people have to understand you're making.
He has the greatest resume. He has performed great for
the most part, not always very well in the biggest states.
He was terrible the first two and a half quarters
last year. Right, they haven't scored in the first quarter
of you know, we've heard that really remarkable. But he
has finished and finished with the flurry. And even if
they had lost that Seahawks game, right, people forget he
(21:12):
put together a drive to give them ten going into
that fourth quarters. Um. But but I would say, how
I would break it up and it's hard for some
people mentally to break this up. Is Aaron Rodgers the
best I've ever seen play quarterback, and Tom Brady is
the most accomplished quarterback. I think that's totally fair. And
you get into like Elway and Marino and these guys
(21:33):
had I mean, you watch them on film and they
pop off like way. Brady doesn't. But what Brady does
is he just he's so surgical. He might not be
able to throw that Aaron Rodgers hail Mary seventy five
yards downfield like he did a Detroit, But he's throwing
the ball downfield a lot more this year. Yeah, a
lot more, which is weird because there he's forty. I mean,
what's the man. I need some of this whatever he's
doing at for TV twelve method that magic water and
(21:56):
magic water, that's Russell Wilson's magic water and Tom Brady's
on Ever get concussions and never grow old. Um, okay,
a couple of quick NFL things. Quarterback in Jacksonville next
year is who I thought it was gonna be Eli Manning,
but I guess they've patched up and it's got to
be Blake. Now. I think you reach a point where
you say, we made the a C Championship game, we
gotta try to run it back. Let's not screw Like,
(22:17):
who else would they get? The problem is, well, el
still gonna get. I don't think they're gonna get Alex Smith,
Kirk Cousins. Yeah, maybe Alex Smith. Alex Smith is the
wild card and all this. I think any of the
Viking quarterbacks, You're like, yeah, I don't know. Would you
really rather have Case Keenom over Blake Bortles? Probably, but
you're gonna have to pay a lot for Case and
you already got Blake. He knows your offense folds could
be readily available. Yeah. I I keep hearing that, and
(22:38):
it's like the NFL teams are gonna be snowed under
by that. Are they like, I don't know, but what
you have to have Folds or Blake Bortles? Probably? Probably? Yes,
you're right. That's the thing. You know what Blake had,
Blake did have his moments is here's crazy said sounds.
Blake did play. Okay for some time. They're gonna talk
himself is a very were setting a very low They're
(22:59):
gonna talk himself into play the kid of the quarterback
in Denver's who next year? I really think it's Kirk Cousins.
I think Elway is not a rebuilding guy. He's not
a patient guy. He's I want to win now and
I'm sick of losing even one two years. What do
we need? Okay, Kirk Cousins, let's go. And I think
case Keendom is a good backup plan for them if
if Kirk goes to the Browns, which I think is
a really interesting one, because then he can use one
in four are good players around Kirk if he goes
(23:21):
to Brown's or Jackson or wherever. I think den Denver
just says, Okay, who's next. Taste Keenom, We'll give you
the money. I don't think always Gonna. I just don't
think he's gonna sit there and trask Baker Mayfield. I
don't think it's case Keenum. He just doesn't an outdoors.
I just don't think he is. I don't I don't
know if he's the right guy, but I just don't
think Elway wants to go and let's redo it with
a rookie. No. He wants to win right now. Is Garoppolo?
Is the Garoppolo thing as good as it looks. No, No,
(23:44):
everybody's going crazy about that. I like Jimmy. I like
Jimmy a Lott played grade. He's very very good. Jimmy,
tell me I'm wrong here. People want to put in
Brady and Jimmy in the same Hall of Fame class
now like not quite yet. Like he's good, very very good.
But this is a little little over a ski as
far as all the hype and the first quarterback taken
in the NFL draft is who I think it's gonna be.
(24:05):
At the end of the day, It's gonna be Donald
I really do. Baker Mayfield is such a fun case,
but he's it's the end of the day. People are
gonna say, are we using the first pick? I'm a
guy who's six foot tall plus. You can't be Cleveland, Cleveland.
Here's what I said about Cleveland. They have to draft
a quarterback number one overall because they missed on the
likes of Wins and others, right, so they have to,
although Kirk Cousins replaces that they have more enough cap
(24:26):
room to over paym Um. On the other hand, they
can't take Baker Mayfield number one because of Manzel, because
he's six foot tall. Because of a bunch of other stuff. Yeah,
you think about playing in Pittsburgh twice and playing in
Cleveland eight times. He's a he's not the biggest guy
in the world. Yeah, they need to make the safest
pick possible. Frank Schwab rees work at Yahoo sports fallum
(24:49):
on Twitter. It's good follow as well, and uh they
have the shutdown corner, which is just great. Great work,
hey man, good work this season. Look forward to having
me on again. Appreciate man. Frank Schwab a a resident badger,
not badgering us, coming on talking talking footballs. Conditions on
the field change. So can your insurance needs? Talk with
a farmer's agent day so you can assess whether your
(25:09):
policy is game ready. Find an agent at Farmers dot
com a farmer All right, let's welcome in our good
friend Dan fire Dan. Uh. The Farmer's insurance open is
arguably the longest open. Like we were there Wednesday, we
were talking about it Tuesday. It just finished today and
(25:31):
I fully understand why it finished today. I thought Jason
Day was hurt. Let we gotta crank up his microphones.
Gets my gut. Nope, A great go alright, same one
as the one before. Jason Day is back on track,
first winning gosh Sin the Players Championship. Second time that
(25:54):
he's one of the Farmers Insurance Open. But yeah, they
had the delay yesterday, ended up playing five playoff holes.
Still couldn't get it, and maybe Jabe Holmes was to blame,
considering he took four minutes over one shot in the
eighteen poll yesterday. However, they came back this morning lasted
just thirteen minutes. Is Dave Birdie the eighteen toll at
Torrey Pines. So Jason Day is your Farmer's Insurance Open
(26:14):
champion and he wins that tournament, as I mentioned for
the second time. And how about that Patriots story that
I know that you touched on earlier? Little drama with
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady cut shortest weekly radio appearance on
w e E I and Boston after one of the
hosts of the station criticized his five year old daughter.
The host from a different show called Brady's daughter his
hands after the host watched a documentary on Brady. The
(26:37):
host has been suspended by the station, but Brady says
he is still considering if you will appear on that
station again. Now that Boston Herald says Patriots stunded Rob
Gronkowski has had no limitations in practice and just needs
to clear concussion protocol before he can play in Super
Bowl fifty two. Brown's tackled Joe Thomas under contract through teen,
but it could be his last in a Browns uniform,
as he recently said that even if he doesn't retire
(26:59):
at me be time for the Browns to look for
the future at left tackle. Building Over remains number one
of the latest APT Top twenty five college hoops pulled.
Virginia comes in at number two, Produced State at three.
How about Duke, who lost at home to Virginia, They
stay at four. Michigan State moving up now at number five,
rounding out this week's time. I love that college basketball.
There's no great teams. You have. The two best teams
(27:20):
are both twenty and one, Like how many games you
have to win without with only losing one game? Which
you like that? And no great teams. It's just no
great team, no separation, like two teams are twenty and
one likes pretty in really I legitimate conferences. Yeah, Virginia's
win on Saturday at Duke was so impressive. It's just me.
I can understand Doug if Duke lost on the road
at Virginia playing a close game. I know rankings are
(27:43):
done in a different way where you take everyone's points,
but to see Duke still ranked at number four despite
losing at home, I don't care who you lose. That
you lose at home, you should fall in the rankings,
but Duke doesn't. Oh, Kentucky's back with that win over
West Virginia. They're back in the top twenty five, number
twenty one. That's a good win. They shouldn't have dropped
out of the top twenty five, and I guess over
actionary speaking of the Michigan State uh story. Speaking of
(28:05):
the Michigan State story, I thought this was so if
you've been following Michigan State and the uh and the
the NASA story. Uh Nasa was a Larry nassas of
osteopathic doctor who worked with um the U S gymnastics
team and uh USA gymnastics as well as Michigan State athletes,
(28:28):
and he would Meanwhile, he was like, I'm sure by
now you know the story. I don't want to go
into graphic detail because his gross. It's sinister, and thankful, thankfully,
the guy's gonna rot in jail before he rots in hell, right,
And so what happened was ESPN apparently was doing a
yearlong investigation on Michigan State Athletics and their handling of
(28:53):
um sexual abuse and sexual harrassment issues on campus. And
because Michigan State, you know, fought them in court to
not disclose some of their um some of their findings,
ESPN did actually a deeper dive into it. Now. Look,
(29:14):
I'll be in full disclosure. I don't I don't like
the timing of it. I don't I think you're combining
two stories. You're you're latching on. This is some of
these done in politics. They call it pork and politics, right, dundays,
no pork is in politics. Pork and politics is UM.
I say, you're trying to get the funding for the
wall past, right, and so you do a deal to
(29:38):
your past legislation to fund President Trump's wall, and it's
obviously a hot button political issue. Well, say you're in
the state of I don't know, Nebraska, and you're like, hey,
you want my vote, we need this Transatlantic railway funding
thing to go through. Attached that, so my state gets
(30:00):
fifty million dollars of funding and then the State of
Oregans like, yo, hold on, I am way, I'm totally against,
absolutely against building a wall, Like it is a democratic state,
a liberal state. We don't want any walls being built. Like, well,
what if we sweet in the pot and put a
hundred million dollars towards this thing that you've been asking
for in another bill? And like, okay, I'm all ears
(30:21):
making a hundred fifty million. And that's how these bills
get passed, right, It's called pork Well, that's exactly. That's
kind of feels a little bit like what ESPN is
doing with this Michigan State story. The NASA story is awful.
It is awful, and you're you're sitting there, You're going like,
how could no one at U S Gymnastics? How did
no one say anything? No this was going on? How
(30:43):
no one at Michigan State the women's gymnastic coach was
sending their athletes there and some apparently track and fiel
they're uncomfortable, And how did no one say like, hey,
it's wrong to do what he's doing. I know it's
a medical procedure, Like really, couldn't have look, and so
they're latching onto that um some reported cases of sexual
(31:04):
violence against women from like the past decade, and I
just I think you're combining two things that don't need
to be comp the the idea of college athletics having
a problem with men and their treatment of women is
absolutely legitimate, just like the problem on all college campuses
(31:24):
of of whether if you want to call it rape
culture or just the idea that UH, domestic and sexual
violence isn't being handled in the appropriate way. That's great,
But when you're at the timing of it, it's almost
as if you're saying, hey, is so you had this
going on with your basketball team, and you had to
know that NASA was doing this with gymnastics, which I
(31:47):
that's not right, it's not fair. And I don't know
what happened in Michigan State. I do know that there
are certain legalities which keep football coaches and basketball coaches
from talking about what took place. You just can't say,
all right, here's what really happened. You can't um. But
I do know that Mark D'Antonio and Tom Izzo have
(32:11):
at least earned earned the equity, earned the equity two
uh to be allowed a little bit of leeway so
we can have a better understanding of how they've been
handling what they've been handling. So Michigan State, Michigan State. Yesterday,
UH came from behind and beat Maryland on the road
(32:35):
in College Park, Maryland. After the game, it was a
really uncomfortable Q and a between an ESPN outside the
Lins reporter and toms O, the head coach of Michigan State.
Take a listen, looking back at the way sexual assault
allegations have been handled by your basketball program, do you
have any regrets. I've cooperated with every investigation everyone, and
(33:02):
I will continue to cooperate with every investigation everyone. All right, now,
for the record, that's a terrible question. That is a
terrible question. It's not a terrible question because of the
subject matter and the timing. Even right, I understand they
report on the story. They asked Michigan State to comment.
Michigan State one comment. This is the only time again
(33:23):
in the comment, and he was obviously going back to
an answer that the university lawyers were telling him. But look,
I worked at ESPN and they teach you that's a
terrible question. You don't ask somebody a yes or no
question because it doesn't allow for an interesting answer. It's
a completely unfair question because if he says yes, I
have regrets. What do you regret if you say no?
(33:45):
The world is in gray, it's not in black and white.
And I understand it wasn't her first question. She was
trying to put him on the spot, and he was
being dodgy about it, and he smartly didn't say yes
or no. Because that's the idea they teach you there.
We are you taught to ask questions, never asking yes no,
Never ask a question with the trigger word, Hey, don't
(34:06):
ask double headers, which means don't ask two questions in one.
By the way, you'll hear a ton of these this
week in Super Week, right, because what happens when you
ask two questions in one They always answer the one
you don't want them to answer, or they answer a
completely different question. It's a terrible question, yes or no. Um.
(34:28):
But the real mistake is in Michigan State and how
they have in an effort to support Ioh, they have
shown him no support. Look, the president announces an early retirement.
The A. D. Mark Hollis, who uh is as widely
respected in a d as or is in the country,
resigns on Friday, like they're all like, dude, I'm gone
first first shot, Like I'm out. So he doesn't have
(34:50):
his president to have his support, he doesn't have his
a d And if you listen to those answers, that's
a guy who who lawyered up and had some really
bad years, had some really bad lawyers. Like at first
he started to answer questions about Travis Walton, who played
for them, was apparently accused of hitting a woman, and
(35:11):
the outside of the lines reporters asking him about this, Well,
there's multiple witnesses like, hey, look, if Tomizo was allowed
to answer, he would have said it ended up being
a littering ticket. That's what he got. He got a
ticket for littering. It's like, what am I supposed to do? Like,
I'm not an investigator. And the biggest issue, and this
has nothing to do with Nasser and has nothing to
do with the idea of the rape culture at school.
(35:34):
This is the biggest issue. Universities should not be investigating abuse.
They should not now if abuse happens, they should be
alerted to it and they should do their best to
stop it or to investigate and to turn it over
to the authorities. But that's who should be in the
idea that schools should be in charge of Title nine
(35:54):
investigations is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I am
a radio host. Do you know what I should not
be doing? Selling my own radio show or worrying about
what affiliates were on. We're on some great affiliates. I
just heard we're gonna be on. We had a big
affiliate announcement of coming in a couple of weeks. I
can't tell you about. I don't know how the affiliate
thing comes down. I don't know how we got on
(36:15):
an awesome signal in Phoenix, but it happened a couple
of weeks ago. More happy about it. The point is
that that's out of my purview. Yeah, so the dug
got live show. But I don't control what stations I'm on.
I don't control of The first two hours are on
Serious x M, and the third hour you can only
get on the I Heart app if you're Serious x
M person Like, that's a deal that's done above or
(36:37):
different than my pay grade. And colleges and universities, though
they are assigned to protecting your children when they come
to school, they are not They should not be assigned
to investigate crimes. That's what the police departments are for.
So um, look, I I feel for like any human being,
(37:01):
all of the victims. I don't want any woman or
any man or boy to be abused sexually anywhere. But
I think that they're using kind of the political pork
idea of latching onto Michigan State during a devastating time.
And mean, then the Larry NaSTA thing is just devastating
(37:21):
to the university. Do you really think they would knowingly
have an osteopathic doctor see athletes who is doing this
to women? If they if they had any idea, I don't,
and if they did, they should lose their job immediately.
But latching on Title nine investigations which shouldn't be investigated
(37:43):
by the universities to begin with, to this Larry Nastra story,
I think it's completely unfair. What if you could get
up to one thou dollars and as little as forty
eight hours with tax Layer, Well you can introducing refund
now only from tax Layer. Follow your taxes get up
to one thousand and as little as forty eight hours.
No one fred fees. Visit tax layer dot com. This
(38:07):
is the dog gottlip show here on Fox Sports Radio.
Coming up next, Um, Rob Gronkowski might not clear concussion
protocol for the Super Bowl. Is that a big deal,
little deal or no deal? I'll tell you next. Online
shopping can be confusing, Well not anymore. With True Price
(38:27):
from True Car, now you can know the exact price
you'll pay for your next car. So visit Truecar and
enjoy more confident car buying experience. Doug got Leave Show
Fox Sports Radio Live from Super Week in Minneapolis, presented
by a rifle blue black Rifle coffee. Let's get to
a game. This is game time side on the Doug
(38:52):
Gottlieb Show. As conditions on the field change, so can
your insurance needs? Talk with the Farmerzation today so you
can assess with your policy. Is game ready finding a
Farmers dot com? Dan Byron what he got for me?
Games man? It through t s a Doug and today's
game is big deal, little deal, no deal? All right, Doug?
(39:13):
Big deal, little deal or no deal? That Patriots tended.
Rob Gronkowski may not clear concussion protocol until after all
media availabilities are over, so he doesn't have to talk
to the press. I think that's a that's a little deal. Um,
it's a little deal. But whatever amount of money, he
would have been fine for not talking to the the press.
(39:33):
I mean, they have this the media Day thing, which
has been moved to tonight right, its correct, and he's
not going to be available according to reports tonight. But
I just want to point out that they've made this
into a big event, but they've kind of missed the
timing of it because now everybody has social media, like,
you don't really need media Day nearly as much as
he used to. Now it's kind of a show. And
when the best showman on the Patriots, when the only
(39:53):
showman on the Patriots is in there, what is the
purpose of Kevi covering the Patriot It makes it interesting
as well because he's been practicing full but hasn't gone
through protocol almost the way that the Patriots can bend
the rules. So maybe Gronk doesn't do anything or say
anything silly leading up to Super Bowl fifty two. Big deal,
little dealer, no deal. Doug that the Cleveland Indians are
phasing out the Chief Wahoo logo probably the twenty nineteen season.
(40:15):
I think it'll be made into a bigger deal than
it's that. It's a little deal. Uh, he'll still be
able to purchase the merchandise in around the area. They're
still on the they're still in the rights to the logo.
They're just not gonna use it. And if you've watched
over the last couple of years, the Indians have moved
to the sea on their on their navy caps anyway. Um,
it is a big deal for people who have been
calling it offensive for years. UM. I just think it's funny, like,
(40:38):
if it's so offensive, why don't they take it out
of production this year? Why don't they stop using it
this year? That good point, it's it's so offensive, we're
gonna take it a next year. Next year. Big deal,
little deal or no deal. That Roger Federer won his
twentieth Grand Slam title over the weekend at the Australian Open,
that's a big deal, regardless of the fact that Rapha
was hurt, regardless of the fact he played Chili in
(40:59):
the finals and Djokovic for example, in the finals, twenty
for Roger Federer. Uh. The one weird thing about tennis is,
remember when Roger Federer was the greatest of all time?
Then it was Rofa Adal, then maybe it was Djokovic.
Now then now it's better again, Like make up your
mind already. I still want to see him in the
French final One big Deal, little deal or no deal.
That Rhonda Roussi is saying bye bye, mm a hello,
(41:20):
w w we that's a uh, that's a little deal. Um. Look,
she always wanted to go into acting. Now she's going
into acting. This is game time on The Duck Gottlieb Show.
Is Josh mc daniels ready for a second shot at
being a head coach? A guy played for him in Denver?
(41:41):
Eddie Royal joins us next in The dug Gotlip Show.
Do Do Do what Appen You? Duck Gotlip Show. Fox
Sports Radio Live from Super Week in Minneapolis is presented
by Black Rifle Coffee Man. We got a lot of
stuff to you, come coming at you this week. Peter
(42:03):
King is gonna join us up coming in fifteen minutes.
We'll talk to him about the departures from the Patriots
coaching staff. Who's gonna replace the departures to the Patriots
coaching staff? Also, like, is there anything really to lose
for Tom Brady? Like I hate to say house some money,
but kind of playing with House some money? Right? Five
super Bowls already in the bank up twenty you know,
(42:26):
greatest comeback in Super Bowl history might or might not,
probably will have Rob Gronkowski, won't have Julian Edelman. Like
he's already the most accomplished quarterback of the modern football era.
Is there really anything to lose if he loses the
Super Bowl? Kind of a different way of looking at it.
Plus Philadelphia Eagles and uh, the fact that felt like
they belonged here all year. We freaked out when they
(42:47):
lost Carson Wentz and then um, now we're not freaked out,
although they just did just beat a backup or even
third string quarterback in order to get here. We'll talk
to some Super Bowl with Peter King. Let's also catch
up with Eddie Royal, who was in the league for
nine years, playing a couple of my favorite teams, and
of course uh joined us here on the set at
Radio Row. Eddie. Uh, first, is this first time doing
(43:07):
radio role as an as a non player? Get it
actually is, and and I'm enjoying it. You know, I
didn't know what to expect and I got out here
and it's been awesome so far. Just meeting a lot
of people, learning a lot of different things, and uh,
I'm enjoying it all right. Um, your first team was
the Denver Broncos, and you played for Josh McDaniels and
so and I and I remember, I want to get
(43:28):
into the tebow thing because I know some stuff about
the tebow thing that I'm not sure you've you've talked about,
But I want to get into what was meant? What
was your experience like playing for mc daniels. It was up.
It was a lot of ups and a lot of downs,
a lot of highs and lows. And uh, to tell
you what about Josh as far as xs and ohs,
there's nobody better in the league, I think, and and
(43:48):
that's shown by the adjustments that they make at halftime.
But just seeing it and being on the team and
preparing for each week, I couldn't believe how much I
knew about the other team going into each week. Until
you have that type of information about the other team
you're playing, it's easy to win games. You just gotta
execute the game plan. And that's why that they're their
slogan is do your job, because if you do your job,
(44:10):
you're nine times out attending to win. You know what,
And it's hard to say. Uh, he was a young
head coaching and I hate saying it, but it was
his management of people, you know, it was. It had
nothing to do with football. It was all about how
you manage the veteran players there, because when you come
in and you start off and you trade your franchise quarterback,
(44:31):
that kind of rubs people the wrong way right away.
When he got there, Yeah, and he had just come
off a Pro Bowl year, so it was hard for
guys to understand what we were doing and what direction
we were going in until you bring in Kyle Lorton,
who was a great quarterback, but at that point he
wasn't a Jay Cutler, so to us in the locker room,
we didn't really know what he was doing. And so
(44:52):
then he got veteran guys on the team like Brian
Dawkins and Champ Bailey and and as a younger player,
you're watching them to see how they vibe with him,
and when he didn't really necessarily reach out and embrace them,
then it kind of made us take a step back
and question what was going on. And you look at
our year. We started out six and oh, but then
(45:13):
things started to fall apart after that that was when
the locker room and all the relationships started to break down. Yeah,
so it was his inability to manage he goes and
then and then he went with Tebow and which which
on the surface, like you guys want a bunch of games, right, um,
But but underlying underneath was like for somebody like you, like, look,
(45:34):
I'm sure you like playing on a team that was winning,
but you also in order to make more money, you
gotta catch more balls, and that based upon the offense
and Tebow is inaccuracy. You just you couldn't throw the
ball thirty times again, you just in caple of it.
And when he threw it like you were a smaller
wide receiver, it was it was generally in your area.
But that's it, just generally right, right, That's that's fair.
(45:54):
You're right. So his his value For a guy who
is so smart with adjustments and evaluating what we need
to win a particular game, how could he mis evaluate
the quarterback position so badly? I think it was a
thing with Tebow with he had all the intangibles off
the charts, I mean, leadership, he had everything you look
(46:15):
at it. He had that, he had the size. I
think Josh thought that he could fix his throwing motion
and that would fix Tebow. But it just didn't work
out that way. Uh, the accuracy was was a huge issue.
I love Tebow to death. I mean, I'm not putting
them down by any means, but accuracy in the NFL
for a quarterback is everything, and his accuracy was off.
And so and Josh and that offense the way it's
(46:37):
drawn up on paper, you need to do it that way,
and with Tebow it was never how it was drawn up.
All yeah, and so that's what kind of but we
were winning, so the hell. I mean, but you guys
what you guys had a great defense, a great kicker.
You mean, you're making you know, you're setting them up
kicking six yard field goals or whatever. And and and
(46:59):
you know during the playoff run you played also a
bunch of bad teams too at the time. And then
you had to remember you had the Bears escape where
they didn't get out of bounds and just running just
getting just get out of bounds, and then we'll get
out of bad like everything that could have gone right
went right, and then you end up beating the Steelers
in the playoffs, Like are you kidding me? How is
this thing? What was that like to be a part of?
We couldn't believe in ourselves and be honest with you.
I mean, it was just shocking at us because you
(47:21):
go into those games and you're like, man, you know
you're under match, you know your personnel isn't better than
the one you're playing against, and so you play as
hard as you can and you look up and we
kept winning. So it's shocking at us too. And then
you go against Tom Brady and the Patriots and and
Belichick and we're like, maybe we stay in a chance
until we got out there and realized that the pots
(47:42):
Royal joining of of course uh former Charger, former Bear
I think probably was known as the Chargering Bronco joining
us on the Doug Gotlips your show here on Fox
Sports Radio. I will say this though, for McDaniels and like, look,
Belichick got fired in Cleveland, right everything you know, like
lots of dudes lose their lose their first job. It
happens to the the Kickers maybe more than anything. Right, they're
not as good in their first job as they are
(48:04):
in their second job. Um, and so do you think
can you can you learn those traits? How to how
to how to handle a locker room even though he's
only been an offensive coordinator, right, he hasn't still hasn't
been handling a locker room in the Internet, and he's
in the Patriots locker room, which is different than how
every other locker room is in the NFL. Can those
traits be learned over time spent back in New England
(48:27):
that he can use in Indianapolis. Yeah, I think he.
I think he's learned it, and I think he's gonna
do a great job in Indie. I think, Uh, it
was kind of a shock to the ego that we
didn't have his success all the time because he had,
Like I said, the xs and os were there, and
I know he probably felt like, I'm doing everything right,
why aren't we winning? And now I think he really
(48:47):
had time to take a look at himself, mature a
little bit more, and start to understand that those relationships
with those players is just as important as the XS
and os and and I'm pretty sure that he's learned
that and I'm looking forward to him being a great coach.
A How do the Patriots keep doing this with these
white wide receivers? Right? All? Right? Like if you're White.
You would have been a Patriot, wouldn't you. I mean right,
(49:07):
like really smart, great quickness, understanding, awareness of how to
play against man and crossing routes and find the hole
within his own. But like, first was Welker, then Welcer
signs with the Broncos. Then it's Edelman. Edelman tears the knee.
Now it's a mandola. All right, dude, tell me how
does this? How does this work? Yeah? Yeah, Chris Hogan
(49:27):
in Theregan doesn't really fit. He's like six too, he's
not really a uh, he's not really an undersized wider ship.
But still, how do they do it? That's truld. You
know what. To be a great receiver in that offense,
you need to be smart, you need to be quick,
and Tom needs to like you. You know, you need
to have those three things and be able to catch
the ball. And so those guys do all of those
(49:48):
things really well, so it allows him to have success.
And like I said before, if you do exactly what's
on the paper the way that they tell you to
do it, you're gonna have success. And those guys are
disciplined football players, and Tom likes him, and that's why
they're able to go there. Um, I find it's it's
really fascinating what you said about Tebow, how he had
all the intangibles, but sometimes in football you need the tangibles.
(50:11):
You need to be able to throw a football. And
I think that's that's what Foles has, right And and
Foals would lack some confidence. Um, only good in certain systems.
But what he had as opposed to what case Keenum
didn't have in Philadelphia a week ago Sunday, was that
dude can throw the ball downfield, make big throws, step
up in the pocket, make big throws down the field
(50:31):
with a big arm. And I think that was kind
of the difference in the game. Is one quarterback had
all the intangibles, the other quarterback how all the tangibles,
and on some level you need the tangibles to make
plays that it's that a fair assessment. That's a great assessment,
I think. And and where he lacks the confidence, he
has such a great team surrounding him. They lift him up,
you know, because because he knew that he was a
(50:52):
backup quarterback and he kind of played like that in
the beginning. But this team is such a family that
they lifted him up. And now he's playing with more
confidence and he's doing things that even surprise himself. I mean,
you look, he's had some of his best games ever
in these playoffs and it's because of the guys that
are around him. So Doug Peterson has done a great
job a game plan and doing what he does best.
He figured out what Nick Foles does best and he's
(51:13):
able to do that. And so this game will be
great to see because Belichick is gonna try to take
that away. Belichick will know what Nick Foles likes to
do and they will try to take that away. So
the adjustments will be key. Um. Last thing, Um, Look,
i I've saw this as soon as I saw it
on paper, and I have my own. You know, everyone
is cautious because you know foals and going against Belichick,
(51:34):
But Brady looked very human the first three quarters last year.
He looked very humid at times. If you have the
type of defense that's physical on their wide receivers and
they can get after you with a good defensive lind
this is not only a fantastic front four. They've done
a great job of rotating guys so they're fresh all
year long. And I feel like it's like the perfect,
Like we're just we're so infatuated with the Brady thing,
(51:55):
Like the Eagles are should be favored in this what
they're playing any other name other than the Patriots, just
based upon the two teams, I feel like the Eagles
should be favored. I'm I'm not an Eagle fan at all.
I think they're gonna win the game. You've played this
thing for nine years. What's your assessment of the game itself.
I actually agree with you, uh and and a lot
of people don't agree with us. But I think with
that defensive line, if you can hit Brady and then
(52:18):
you can hit Gronk, I think those are that's the
key in the game. Because you look at Jacksonville what
they did in the first half. They were hitting Brady
a lot and then they had that big hit on Gronk.
It kind of shook up the team, you know. And
and as a fan and as a former player watching,
you know, if you can intimidate that their biggest, strongest
intimidator on their team, then you have a chance to win.
(52:39):
So I thought Jacksonville would take the game, but they
just didn't score enough points in the second half. But
I think Philly will be able to do that. They'll
be able to be physical with their wide receivers in Gronk,
and I think they'll be able to hit Brady. He's
Eddie Royal of course. Uh hokey, a Charger, a Bronco,
a bear and now a member of us here in
the media. Now you get to go and fill up
your gullet at at the food or that's what they did.
(53:00):
They know how many media guys are overweight. They're like,
you know, let's just put you guys as close to
the food as possible so that nobody gets hurt. Eddie,
great to have you really appreciate it. Eddy Royal joining
us here on the set here in uh in the
Twin Cities at Radio Row. Coming up next, Peter King
will join us. We'll get his thoughts on the Patriots
and what they'll look like next year, and is there
(53:21):
anything to lose for Tom Brady if he loses this game.
That's next. But first, guys, I'm here to tell you

visit True Car. They enjoy more confident car buying experience.
Doug Olive Show, Fox Sports Radio Live from the Mall
of America. I love the Midwest. The Midwest goes the
(54:49):
opposite of the way everywhere else is going. Everywhere else,
people are like, no more malls, right, no more big
box stores. Everything's online. Like now, not Minneapolis. They redid this.
This place is unbelievable. I mean unbelievable. Really, the decor
is really nice. It's not cheeseball old school eighties or
nineties mall like. It's really been nicely redone. But they
(55:10):
got everything in here. The proximity of shake Shack is dangerous.
We may have to do a We may have to
get Ryan Music in on some shake Shack Music is
a Southern California kid, which means he preaches the gospel
of of in and out Burger, right, that there's in
and out Burger and then there's everyone else. The truth is,
if you're truly a Southern California kid, you know in
and out Fat Burger, Tommy Burger, um, and then there's
(55:32):
outside players like a like a five guys, not shake Shack.
We we sometimes kind of push shake Shack into that
fast food character category, even though it's not like it's
much more refined chilies than it is actually in the
in and out burger like you know drive through shake
shacks that I'm aware of. Still, I still think we
need to get him enough shake shack. And I'm not
(55:54):
sure Twin cities probably have a Steak and Shake music.
If you had a steak in shake before steak and
shake a spectacle, that's a good that's some good stuff
right there. And no, they don't actually have a steak
on a burger. That burgers are called steak burgers, even
though it's like we use only sirloin, which is sir.
Loin is steak and anyway, that's where they come from.
We'll fatten him up, don't worry. Isn't your girlfriend of
(56:16):
vegan we gotta have. She likes she's a part she's
eight sometimes vegan. H h. I'm just fascinated by the
whole thing we gotta get. They do as much meat
as possible for you get home and you have to
eat salads morning neon tonight. Um, it is eerily, eerily
(56:36):
silent in baseball. I'm look I've been doing this shop
for fifteen years. I can't remember a hot stove league
like this. There's nothing I got, nothing I got John
Carlos Stanton is a Yankee. That's it. I've got John
Carlos Stanton is a Yankee. Nothing else happened of note.
Is that crazy or what? Like the biggest news of
(56:57):
the day in baseball? Maybe the big is they're not
gonna use wah Who in two thousand nineteen, which you
want to talk about forced stories, Um, they're gonna do that.
They're gonna be asking Roger Goodell about the Redskins logo
because the Indians are I'm not gonna use Chief wah Who.
(57:17):
They're removing the Chief Wahoo logo in two thousand nineteen. So, um,
my thoughts are I don't consider Cleveland Indians to have
any reflection on Native Americans and any sort of negative,
negative context or connotation. I don't. I'm also not Native Americans,
(57:37):
so I can't tell you if I should be offended,
like it's reprehensible. But it's been a mascot for, you know,
over fifty years, and I know that Native Americans are
not Indians, so I can separate the two. But it's
the same feeling I have for people. Well, redskins is
a derogatory term, but it's not actually used. No one
actually calls anyone a redskin, nor have they in in
(58:00):
the last thirty years has anyone called somebody a redskin.
It's not a it's like, what's a derogatory term, like
I guess, but it's not actually used. It's not actually used.
And and if the intent of your mascot was to
you know, honor in some ways the warriors, many of
(58:21):
whom died, you know, from the hands of of of
our own ancestors, or you maybe your own ancestors. My
ancestors weren't in the country at that point in time.
We came over on a boat early in the nineteenth century,
mid nineteenth century or twentieth century whatever. Um. But you know,
(58:42):
if it's so, if it's so um, if it's so
polarizing and such a a derogatory term or a derogatory mascot,
why why wouln't you pull it now? And we're gonna
pull it, pull We're gonna pull it. We don't love it,
We're gonna pull it in a year that that doesn't
(59:02):
make that doesn't make any sense to me. Zero zero
point zero sense to me. Um, Alright, one of the
fascinating things that happened this weekend. You know, look, the
weekend before before the super Bowl is kind of an
open weekend. Right, he got Australian Open. But Australian Open
(59:23):
is hard because even though Roger Federer won, it's at
off hours, Like really, what well, what time is it? Um?
You had the Farmers Insurance Open, We got a chance
to go down there live. Tiger Woods did in fact
make it, did finish twenty three. Uh, he played better
and better more than anything. He was healthy, he was happy.
He looked like a guy who I've told you before.
If there's a tournament he's gonna win, it's going to
(59:45):
be the Masters. Even after the incident with Ellen Norgn
when she tried to take him out with that golf club.
He finished fourth at the Masters. He'll do fine at
the Masters if he's healthy, and it appears that he's healthy.
But coming up next, we're gonna talk about the Celtics
and the Warriors. One an incredible game, Uh that was
(01:00:08):
going back was that two nights ago. And then of
course you had Oklahoma City and you had the Philadelphia
seventy six ers last night. That was a that was
a very tense and tenuous game. So um and that
was last night in Oklahoma City in which the thunder
one so Warriors win at home two nights ago. Thunderwent
(01:00:28):
at home last night. But it did feel like I
feel like the Celtics feel more competitive with the Warriors
than even the Calves were when the Calves faced off
of the Warriors a couple of weeks ago. Oh yeah,
by the way, another sign of why you should never
trade with Danny Ainge. Will get to that upcoming in
about ten minutes, but uh, before we do, let's welcome
(01:00:50):
in Peter King. The MMQB dot com is the fabulous
website also has podcasts, has a talented group of writers
that Peter has put together for website that if your
football fan, you go there every morning, not just in
but also out of football season. Peter, I kind of
feel like this is the last. Maybe I'm just saying
this because because it's it's a hot, taky, but it
(01:01:12):
feels like this is the last of this type of
Super Bowl in a uh in just kind of a
an average size Midwestern city. Support the town because they
built that beautiful dome. It's the best stadium in sports
right now. But they're building one in l A. And
they're building one in Vegas. They redid Miami, there's always
New Orleans. Kind of feels like this is the last
time we'll be North. Haven't really thought about it like that, Doug.
(01:01:34):
But look, NFL owners will always vote for a new
stadium one time, for a Super Bowl at least one time,
and if it is in a northern city, they're gonna get.
And now you tell me where the next stadium in
(01:01:55):
a northern city is going to be a dome. I
don't know, but I mean unless Buffalo builds a dome,
but they're never you. Yes, if they build a stadium
with a dome that is magnificent, Yes, and then half
the people stay in Syricus, half will stay in Rochester.
All I'm saying is the NFL, if an owner builds
(01:02:16):
a stadium, they'll figure out all the other crapple. They're
gonna put a Super Bowl there. But that was also
before the l A and l A option existed, before
a Vegas. It's true, but they never look at all
the places they have put super Bowls over time. Okay,
they put one in the Pontiac Silver Dome, and then
(01:02:36):
when Detroit build a new stadium, they put one there.
They put one in the Metro Dome in Minneapolis, and
then when they built a new stadium in Minneapolis, they
put it there. Indianapolis as well. Indianapolis got a Super Bowl.
These these owners are going to honor other owners by
putting a Super Bowl in a dome stadium in the North,
no matter how ill fitting it seems. And that includes
(01:03:00):
Buffalo Um there. There were a lot of of naysayers
when Philadelphia made the coaching higher South Palestonio had a
great note on this yesterday. I didn't realize this. I
assume he means USA today, but I don't know. He said.
A national newspaper rated the seven head coaching hires in
two thousand sixteen, and Doug Peterson was seventh, and I
(01:03:22):
didn't know that. I didn't remember that. I don't even
think I saw it. But but anyway, so so what
I find about Doug Peterson. Okay, so over the weekend
on Friday, I took a ride with Doug Peterson about
thirty five minutes from o wah Wah near his house,
you know, which is the seven eleven of South Jersey
(01:03:44):
and Philly UH into his office, met him a little
after five o'clock road with him and Doug, I'm just
telling you that that, in my opinion, one of the
reasons why Doug Peterson has been successful is that he's
an everyman and he's totally ridiculously unpretentious and his players
(01:04:05):
see that every day. And he also has the strength
of being a backup quarterback for fourteen years and to
be sitting there on the sidelines telling Brett Farve what
his keys are, what to watch for every time, and
also being the sounding board when Farv was piste off
at the game plans or when he was mad at
(01:04:26):
his coaches and everything, and he was kind of the
go between. And that's why Nick Foles UH can look
at a game plan and look at the play calls
against the Minnesota Vikings and say, this is totally different.
We played a horizontal football game against the Atlanta Falcons,
through the ball, dink and dunk down the field. Now
(01:04:47):
against the Vikings were throwing the bar over the top
and it's working. Doug Peterson just feels this so and
the only reason I bring and the higher Schwartz is
a sack of that's because Schwartz has quite the ego,
right and and people don't, Well, he's just gonna run
rough shot over Doug Peterson and eventually he'll take the job.
But it's okay. It's like it's like it's like Wade
Phillips getting hired with the Rams, you know, for Sean mcwicks.
(01:05:10):
Sean McVeigh just said, you take the defense, I'm gonna
do the offense. And you're absolutely right. At works. But
the one other point I would make about Peterson and
why I think he's worked so far, is that he
has this ethos with his team, and it's called the
Faceless Opponent. Every game plan. Every week when he introduces
it to his team, he talks about the team. You know.
(01:05:32):
He doesn't say, oh my god, look at we're playing
playing Belichick this week. Whoa look out we got Brady
forget it. His whole thing is when I say the
faceless opponent, I mean that everybody. All I want you
to do, Alshan Jeffrey is worry about Malcolm Butler. That's
the guy who's going to be across from you today
in this game. You worry about him. You study him
(01:05:53):
until the cows come home. That's all I want you
to worry about. Forget about the fame, forget about the
eight Super Bowls, forget about all this stuff that can't
help you. Just worry about beating that guy across the
across the line from you. Um it's Peter King. Join
us from sports Older Strade. The MMQB dot com is
the website. UM, i've i've I've sat up here in
(01:06:15):
Super Bowl week going back, and the one that's most
vivid in my memory was We're in New York and
everybody's talking about Peyton and Peyton and Peyton and the
crowning achievement They're gonna win a Super bowbo And I
was like, you know that that Seahawks defense is really
really good the type of end you go back and
track it and when defenses are this good and rated
this much better than the opposing team's defense. But you know,
(01:06:37):
there's a reason there's the cliche of offense wins games,
defense wins championships? Are are we missing because the quarterback
is so wildly discussed, and because you have Brady's all
time greatness and yet another comeback and the Foalds he
played so well aren't we missing the fact that the
Seagule's defense is nasty and it's a bad matchup for
the Patriots. I think it is a tough match up
for the Patriots. It certainly was a tough matchup for
(01:06:59):
the Vikings. You know, Brady and Josh McDaniels always figure
out a way to play against the oppressive defenses, um
and they figure out a way to attack the oppressive defenses.
So I'm not saying they will figure that out in
this case. But that's why I think Rob Gronkowski is
a is a vital importance in this game. James White,
(01:07:21):
who I mean, There's been two playoff games now where
Tom Brady is at thrown more than fifteen targets to
James White, and I could see him having the same
kind of game in this game. Just simply move the chains,
don't get greedy. You're gonna take a couple of shots
with Brandon Cooks, but not many, and just move the chains.
(01:07:41):
Just just you know, don't get don't get greedy. But
you're absolutely right. I think one of the things that
the Eagles have on their front is the kind of
depth Chris Long played thirty one snaps in that game.
He made four major big plays in the game against Minnesota,
including the play that led to the interception and the
(01:08:01):
touchdown return by Patrick Robinson, you know, on that interception
that tied the game and then the route was on.
But if Chris Long is asked to play, probably the
snaps this game. The only thing that Jim Shortz says
is play every game like your play every snap like
your hair's on fire. And so don't worry about the
snaps you're not playing. Worry about the snaps you are.
(01:08:25):
Is there anything for Brady to lose if they lose
this game? I mean, it feels like he's so far
surpassed any previous I agree with you absolutely, Doug. I
think it's I think it's silly to to say, well,
what's on what's at stake for Brady in this game?
We can all say, oh my god, he's gonna be
this if he wins. So if he loses, what is
he you know, Oh, he all of a sudden moves
(01:08:45):
behind Montana or Johnny Unitis. You know, Brady has established himself,
in my opinion, as the best quarterback of all time
at age forty, probably has had an m v P
season we'll find out on Saturday. But let's just say
as an m v P season wins the a f
C again, wins the division again, gets his team to
(01:09:09):
his eighth Super Bowl in seventeen years. I mean, nobody
in history has done this. Now we can go back
to Otto Graham, we can go back to pre sixties football,
and we can find you know, more logical comparisons. But
you really really can't find anybody in the modern era
of football who's done what Brady has done. I don't
(01:09:30):
think his legacy changes. Maybe on iota or two, but
nothing major if he loses. Um, okay, let me just
kind of spitfire a couple of things around the league.
He got a new coaching staff in New York, but
they seemed all of a sudden to be singing a
different tune. As far as Eli Manning, I know it's
really the draft is still a couple of months away.
But do you think elies still the quarterback of the
(01:09:51):
Giants Game one next year? I think he's the quarterback
Game one, but beyond that, he's gonna have to earn it.
You listen to at Shermer in all of the little
sidebar things he did and He didn't go on and
say Eli is my quarterback for the next ex years.
He just said elis my quarterback. You know. He didn't
put any time frames, nor should he doug. In the
(01:10:14):
last six years, Eli Manning stern more interceptions than any
quarterback in football. He's got like the third lowest passer
rating of all quarterbacks who have played at least fifty
starts over the last six years, I think there's eighteen
of them. So Eli Manning has been abjectly mediocre at
best in the last six years. He's thirty seven years old. Okay,
(01:10:36):
so they have a top five draft pick in a
quarterback heavy draft, probably going to take your quarterback, I
would think, So why would you keep Eli though? Because
you don't want this quarterback. You don't want to put
the pressure on your on this rookie quarterback to after
produce Opening Day. I still think going back in time,
as much as everybody wants to trash the Bengals, one
(01:10:57):
of the best things I've ever seen the team do
when Carson Carson Carson Palmer was drafted first overall in
two thousand three. He didn't play a snap that year,
and he was ready to be a star. Starting in
two thousand four, his second year, he brings the Bengals
to the playoffs. So don't get greedy. I'll never forget.
I'm in San Diego training camp. Ryan Leaf is playing awful,
(01:11:18):
and Bobby Bethnor tells me. And I love Bobby Bethor,
but he tells me, hey, we gotta get Ryan Leaf
ready to start opening Day. Why he said, well, because
all the people who bought spent all the money on
tickets and boxes and everything. They want to see our
quarterback in the future. So I mean, but I don't think.
I think your job should only be what's the best
(01:11:39):
thing for the long term interests of our team. So
I think it's fine that they bring Eli back. I
really do, But to commit to him for much beyond
early this season is foolish. Who's the quarterback of the Jaguars,
then that's that's a that's a tougher question than the Giants.
It honestly is, because I think that Blake Bortles should
(01:12:02):
be the quarterback opening Day. But if I am, even
though they're playing border paying Bordles nineteen million, if I
am Jacksonville, I'm going hard after Alex Smith, and I'm
going hard or or are not. Kirk Cousins will be
too expensive. Maybe, But but let me ask you this,
(01:12:23):
based on what you've seen in recent years, do you
really think Eli is going to be a big improvement
over Blake Borders. I don't, but Tom Coffin I'm sure does.
Maybe he does, and if he does. If he does,
that's fine. All I can say is, in my opinion,
the Jacksonville Jaguars need veteran competition for Blake Bordles. Broncos
then have to get Cousins, have to get Smith. What
(01:12:45):
are there they feel like? That's all. Give you a
name for Denver, Case Keenum. John Elway really likes Case Keenum.
Doesn't have the arm outside. But here's the point. Case
Keenum is not going to be your quarterback necessarily for
the next X number of years. Denver's got a high
draft choice trade. I'm sorry, signed Case Keenum in free agency.
(01:13:05):
I don't know what for maybe two years thirty million.
Let's say, okay, two years thirty million, and then you've
got a high draft pick. You take one of the
quarterbacks there. Uh is this the year that Terrell Owens
gets into the profit Bohol event? I don't know, in
my opinion, just my opinion, I think Randy Moss is
more deserving. And uh, there's a bunch of guys who
(01:13:28):
are on the CUSP. Tony Basselli is on the CUSP.
Owens absolutely unequivocally should be in the Pro Football Hall
of Fame in my opinion, but I think Randy Moss
is a more deserving wide receiver. Sometimes sometimes that is
a difference making factor with the voters. Okay, I actually
a lie to have one more. Okay, Trll Davis got
(01:13:50):
in and he had an injury shortened career. Four years,
Priest homes four great years. Does this open the door
for Priest Holmes to it opens the door for Tony Basselli.
I think part of the reason why Davis got in
the m v P and the Great Super Bowl. I
mean that's honestly. I mean, look, Terrell Davis opened the
(01:14:11):
door hugely for all guys who have not been great
for a long period of time. Huge It's a huge,
huge thing. But I think you've got to be careful.
There were other factors. You have to extrapolate other factors
involved in this, and I think one of the biggest
factors is Terrell Davis was great in a in a
(01:14:32):
Super Bowl and was an m v P type player
for three years. Nobody ever mentioned Priest tunt Well. I
shouldn't say that he wasn't a prominent m VP candidate
as a player, I know, I know. I think part
of that is where he played and the fact they
didn't make up didn't make a big playoff push. But
the numbers on those couple of years were incredible, incredible, incredible.
Mr Fantasy Football. Uh, he was Mr Fantasy before Fantasy
(01:14:55):
football hit as much as it has now. By the way, UH,
if you go to SeatGeek uh, Peter King himself is
gonna personally make sure that you get money off. That's
how good a dude Peter is. Um. Uh see what
you use? Your name, you put, you put the you,
you put the you put the uh gap on your
phone right the first time you use it. You want
(01:15:15):
to buy a super Bowl ticket for thirty No, I'm
gonna save you twenty dollars. It's only gonna be thirty
and eighty dollars. So now you're gonna be able to
afford go into the game. Seek Gap on your phone
twenty dollars off promo code King, come to the Super Bowl.
Come and join dub Doug Gottlieb at the Mall of America. Awesome,
and you can go check out the Peter likes. My
left Minnesota Twins had Peter King at the MMQB dot com.
(01:15:40):
Peter great as always. All right, thank you, all right,
Let's let's get to Dan Bayer and find out what's
going on in the world of sports. Dan what he
got for me? Doug. The Patriots have arrived in Minneapolis,
getting here this afternoon, but not before a rally in
New England, and not before Tom Brady went on w
e I in Boston and was critical of the station
(01:16:02):
after comments were made by a host calling his five
year old daughter a piscent. This from Brady earlier today
on w e e I in Boston. I tried to
come on this show for many years and showed you
guys a lot of respect. I've always tried to come
on and do a good job for you guys. So
you know, it's very disappointing when you hear that. Certainly
with my daughter or any child, you know, they certainly
(01:16:24):
don't deserve that. So I'll obviously evaluate whether I want
to come on this show again. So I really don't
have much to say this morning. That's fine, Um, I understand,
that's totally fine. Well, maybe I'll speak with you guys
some other time. They'll hang up and not listen. That
was Tom Brady earlier today on w e E I
again making that weekly radio hit. So we have storyline
(01:16:45):
number one at Super Bowl fifty two storyline maybe number
two could be Rob Gronkowski the Patriots tight ended. We
reportedly been a full go in practice coming back from
that concussion, however, has not been included from concussion protocol.
NFL Network says that he will not be made available
for tonight's media day session at the Excel Energy Center
in St. Paul, the home of the Minnesota Wild. No
(01:17:07):
Joel and beat tonight for the Sixers, not gonna play
against the Bucks, missing the second night of a back
to back because of rest. Villanova remains number one of
the latest College Basketball Associated Press Top twenty five. Pul
virgin Is at two, with Purdue at three. Duke despite
losing State at four, with Michigan State jumping up to
number five. Jason Day when the Farmer's Insurance Open this morning,
beating Alex Norn on the sixth hole of their playoff
(01:17:29):
that got postponed until this morning because of darkness last night.
And finally the Cleveland Indians facing out the Chief Wahoo
logo by the nineteen season. Um, I'm a big logo
fan and if if some people are offended by it,
and it has been a theme, yes, so I I'm
(01:17:54):
I'm not offended by it. And as a logo, I
you know, I love your by the way you're wearing it.
You're wearing just just so aware where you're wearing a
two eighteen Shinnecock Hills pull over. Okay, Now shinnecock Hills
their logo is a Native American now it is. It
is not a cartoon character Native American. Like it looks

you will see sales of that logo earlier. Yeah, when

We call what did the pop Say? Fox Say. Earlier
(01:20:05):
on Fox Sports Radio at this very desk, in this
very same mall of America, Clay Travis outkicked the coverage
our morning show here on Fox Sports Radio, had this
to say about his best individual athletes of all time.
This is my top five best non team athletes of
the twenty one century, Mail Edition. I think Roger Federer
is the greatest athlete of the twenty first century in
(01:20:28):
a non team sport twenty titles. He has to go
against everybody in every weight class, and I believe he's
had the greatest degree of longevity. I've got Tiger Woods
number two, and if we had done this vote in
two thousand and eight, I think Roger Federer would have
been number two behind Tiger Woods. But my number one,
(01:20:48):
Roger Federer, my number two, Tiger Woods my number three.
Michael Phelps. Now some of you are saying why would
Michael Phelps be your number three? Because Michael Phelps, first
of all, a lot of his gold medals come in
team events. Otherwise is Michael Phelps is a swimmer, but
many of his gold medals are coming just in different
ways to swim. In the fourth spot, I've got Usain Bolt.
(01:21:08):
To me, Usain Bolt does something that every single person
listening to us right now just about has done at
some point in their life, and that's run. He's the
fastest human being probably in the history of the world
the length of time that he has dominated, and he
hasn't ever failed, at least not yet any drug test.
And then in the fifth spot, I've got Floyd Mayweather.
(01:21:29):
Floyd Mayweather, I'm sliding in at number five because to me,
what Mayweather did at being fifty and oh is impressive.
He's not fighting every fighter, he's not a heavyweight champ,
and so to me, Floyd Mayweather, even though he's fifty
and oh is in the five spot. Well, I don't
consider Floyd Mayweather to be even the top five boxer
of all time, let alone top five individual athlete of
(01:21:50):
all the time. And that's not because I have this
great depth of boxing knowledge, But anyone I've talked to
him boxing doesn't have him as one of the great
boxers of all time. So with that said, I would
eliminate him. No disrespect to you, Saint Bolt. But the
races that he's run is there some strategy in the
hunt meter dash, some but there's not the amount of
strategy and overall hand eye coordination and skill it would
(01:22:12):
take for Federitor the look, I would do Federer Tiger
Woods as as as the top two in our lifetime.
And and the reason is, like I think one of
the great things about bringing up tennis is tennis is
essentially like boxing, only where you have you have tennis
rackets and tennis balls, and you have you know, you
have a referee, and you have lines whatever. Because it's
(01:22:35):
what there's no one else to blame, no one else
to blame. It's a lot like golf in that if
you fail, you fail on your own. You don't have
the help of a teammate. No one else can can you,
John van Develt, You John Vandervelt on your own. The
crazy thing about Federer, though, was many people thought he
was done three years ago. Only that he's not done now.
(01:22:55):
And that's after having a family and being on the
other side of the age of thirty. It's remarkable. I'd
still put Tiger ahead of him because he changed the
role of golf. But I have no problem put putting
Federer two Fox say, Um, all right, uh, We'll get
back to uh NFL football. Up Coming next is Roger
(01:23:15):
Goodell worried about the catch rule. Find out next in
The Doug Gotlive Show, Fox Sports Radio. What Happens to

Live from super Week in Minneapolis, is presented by Black
Rifle Coffee, Alex Marvez from Sporting News and Serious Sex
(01:23:35):
and will join us in twenty minutes. You know, I
I found one part of my Peter King discussion to
be super interesting, and I don't know if you did.
We were talking about Terrell Davis now Terrell Davis t
D who got into the Hall of Fame last year,
how he kind of opened the door for people. It's
fascinating to me that, um, they were not talking about
priest homes. You know. Tony Basselli. That look to those
(01:23:57):
of you who aren't old enough. Tony Basselli was the
starting left tackle the last time the Jacksonville Jaguars went
to the an f C Championship game, Baselli was the
left tackle. All right, Mark Burnell was their quarterback. Man
was Brunell Good Burnell through he you know interesting? Burnell
went to Washington and his spiral reminds me of Warren
Moon's spiral, two of the best spirals in the history
(01:24:19):
of the NFL. But Tony BASSELLI here's how good he was. Hey,
did you know? He was the number one pick of
the expansion his number one pick a second second overall
pick in the NFL draft, But he was also the
number one pick of the expansion draft with the Houston Texans.
He never actually played a snap for the Houston Texans
(01:24:41):
because he got hurt. Uh injuries. Uh, you're tired after
just one season playing with playing with the Texans, but
I don't even think he played. But he was a
five time Pro Bowl, three time first team All Pro.
And the thought is that because Terrell Davis got in,
(01:25:01):
Tony Boselli, who had an injury mired career, will now
be the next. Hey, he was great, but for a
short period of time, And because he was great for
a short period time, he'll get in. But I'm sitting
there going like, hey, why isn't Priest Holmes getting in?
I am not a Chiefs fan. Okay, not a Chiefs
fan anyway, So this is not like, oh, you grew
(01:25:23):
up rooting for him, um. Priest Holmes had four one
thousand yards seasons, including one in which one of which
he um. He didn't get another one which he didn't
get a thousand yards, but that's because he only played
eight games. He was injured. Through eight games, he had
eight hundred and ninety two yards an average a hundred
(01:25:46):
and eleven yards per game. He also led the league
two consecutive years with yards from scrimmage. He catch it
out of the the backfield, he could run it out of
the backfield. He had in consecutive years seventy one and
ninety catches out of the backfield. He led the league
(01:26:07):
two consecutive years with one and seventeen rushing touchdowns. He
was great, but for a short period of time, and
so the question becomes like, how short period of time
can you, uh, you be great in order to get
into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, right, like, like,
(01:26:29):
let's look at Terrell Davis stats. For example, Terrell Davis
also had four one thousand plus yard rushing years. One
was the two thousand yard year. But that's it. Like
he had four and then off a cliff, whereas Priest
Holmes had four and then he had a cup. He
had the eight hundred and fifties. Whatever we are, we're
gonna played half the season. Terrell Davis he played four games,
(01:26:51):
four games, five games and eight games, and he rushed
for roughly eleven hundred yards after three consecutive one thousand
yard t Priest Holmes had a better and longer career
than Terrell Davis. The only thing is didn't play in
the Super Bowl. Had he played in the Super Bowl,
we look at it and we're not supposed to playing
(01:27:12):
in a Super Bowl for running back. That has nothing
to do with how good you are, Like there's so
many other mitigating factors, but in any many ways, it
only points out how important this game is. It just
is um So, Tom Brady and the Patriots are coming
to town. If you haven't heard, Apparently some radio host
(01:27:36):
late at night on a Boston radio station said something
mean about Tom Brady's five year old daughter. Uh didn't
say it was the ugly baby, which is like the
ultimate right. I don't call my kid ugly, my kids smart,
my kids beautiful, but it's called his his five year
old daughter a piss sandwich. I don't even I don't
think the I don't. I don't think that how it
(01:27:58):
got relayed to Brady was the context of it, because
having actually listened to the audio, the audio was basically
the kid was kind of whiny and entitled in this
earth than this opening clip of Tom versus Time. And
he used the term to which I don't really use.
I mean, do you um? I looked up piss aunt
(01:28:23):
and it's an insignificant or contemptible person, worthless or contemptible.
I think that's a little that's more than a little
bit harsh when you look up the actual definition. But
my guess is that the dude who used it didn't
know it was that harsh A remark. Guy's name is
Alex Reemer. He's been suspended by w E. I but
(01:28:47):
I don't think he meant it as anything other than
the kids whiny. I think that's what he meant. I
don't mean contemptible, men, whiny, spoiled, entitled, and he used
any of those other those adjectives adjectives adjective, uh, I
think you'd be fine today even if Brady took umbradge
(01:29:09):
with it. But calling a kids something that means contemptible,
and because honestly, because it has pissed in it, right,
like we were overreact to it. But people do this
all the time. Like if I was to say, Man,
your team is really mediocre this year, like, hey, what
are you talking about? Man? Or eight Nate? What does
mediocre actually mean average average? If you're having a mediocre year,
(01:29:37):
you think the word means mediocre, That means terrible. That
means crummy. No, no, terrible crumby mean terrible, crummy, pissantho.
It means contemptible. It doesn't mean evil, It doesn't mean possessed.
He didn't call your kid ugly, he didn't say you're
you didn't even throw some uh something that will harm
(01:29:58):
your child forever. So Brady probably overreacted because somebody who
heard it overreacted and telled Brady do you know what
they called your daughter? And he said Brady went on
radio instead of his normal spot. He does, honey. He
had this to say, I've tried to come on this
show for many years and showed you guys a lot
of respect. I've always tried to come on and do
a good job for you guys, So you know, it's
(01:30:20):
very disappointing when you hear that. Certainly with my daughter
or any child, you know, they certainly don't deserve that.
So I'll obviously evaluate whether I want to come on
this show again. So I really don't have much to
say this morning. That's fine, Um, I understand, that's totally fine. Well,
maybe I'll speak with you guys some other time. Absolutely fine,
we understand that. All right, Tommy too, there you there
(01:30:44):
you go. So look, look, the the idea is pretty
obvious that Tom Brady mad about it, gonna take it
out in the stadium. And then the question becomes, is
this some sort of distraction? Um, I don't know if
it makes Tom Brady more likable. I mean, it's not
an unlikable thing he did defending his daughter's honor. I
(01:31:06):
don't know anyone who believes it's cool to criticize a
five year old. Though it also seemed like a not
a comment that wasn't needed. Uh. The guy Alex Reemer
was simply commenting on the opening of Tom Versus Time
to which all he had to say was like, Yeah,
I didn't think it looked real. Thought it looked like
it was a made for TV Afternoon special more than
(01:31:27):
how Tom really lives his life. But instead he went
in on the kid a little bit and he got
stung because of it. It also plays to the because
plays to the cliche of what a sports radio shock, chuck,
He's supposed to say something hot, tachy, But this has
no effect on the game on Sunday Zero. It just doesn't.
(01:31:50):
It wasn't an eagle saying something bad about Brady's daughter
or Brady's mama. He has nothing to do with anything
on the field of play, and it was uh Boston's
friendly fire off anything else. So kind of a story
to which, and you'll see this throughout the week. There's
not a ton of other things going on in sports
(01:32:11):
that rise to the level of the Super Bowl. So
any super Bowl level of conversation with Tom Brady, who
has been knighted, sainted and hailed as the greatest ever
to ever do it is made into a bigger deal
than it is. Look my argument Friday, when I hosted
The Herd is is simply this, I think Tom Brady
is great. I've never I don't think he's a better
(01:32:33):
quarterback than Aaron Rodgers. And I think that most of you,
have you searched your hearts, you would say, if I
could have one quarterback to play one game, even if
it's a Super Bowl, I would take Aaron Rodgers. And
I don't think he's the greatest team athlete of all time,
even though he's the most accomplished, most accomplished quarterback in
modern football. That would go to Michael Jordan's And the
(01:32:54):
argument is simple. There was never a championship level event
to which Michael j Ordon wasn't the best player on
the court when he was playing in the NBA. Never
that moment, and the same cannot be said for Tom Brady. Additionally,
Brady went ten years to that winning a championship. Now,
I understand that this is the ultimate team sport, and
(01:33:15):
there's fifty two other guys on the active roster and
a coach that have a lot to do with your
your ability to have sustained success, and they've been able
to sustain him. He has a little bit of Derek
Jeter in him, and that because he's been around so long,
you're able to get more opportunities to win. Michael Jordan
got the six straight NBA Finals. Excuse me, we had
(01:33:35):
to six not sixth straight at the six NBA Finals
in between a retirement and coming back and nearly coming
out of retirement and doing it again, and there was
never a moment, aside from maybe the comeback year to
which he didn't look like he was properly in shape,
that he wasn't absolutely the best player in sport, let
alone the best player in his own team. In the
same camp he said for Brady during all five of
(01:33:57):
his championships and even this year six. But I wouldn't
say anything bad about Brady's kid because I don't I
think that likes class. There's no reason. What's the win
in that? N get it? Um. Roger Goodell was on
with Colin Cowherd earlier today and they got into the
(01:34:18):
catch rule. Take a listen to what the commissioner of
the NFL had to say. I'm not just somewhat concerned.
I am concerned. You want there to be clarity from
an officiating standpoint, of coaching and a players standpoint. They
know what it is, what it isn't they draft the rule,
But what happens is it's not the rule that people
really want. One of our Hall of Fame receivers said it, well,
dans want catches, and we've got some ideas of how
(01:34:39):
to bring clarity to that. It's particularly in the going
to the ground that I think has created a lot
of the confusion, and I think that's what we're focusing on. Yeah,
here's what I think has happened in the NFL that
sometimes you guys know what the law of unintended consequences is,
the law of unintended consequences? Um, I'm a kind of paraphrase. Okay,
(01:35:05):
the law of unintended consequences is, Um, I'm trying to
use an example, like, here's what says in uh In
on Wikipedia. The outcome that are not once foreseen or
intended by purposeful action, You understand. So the idea is
the intended consequence of the catch rule was to bring clarity. Hey, look,
(01:35:28):
in order to catch football, two hands in the ball
or a hand on the ball, whatever, two ft down
and if you hit the ground, the ball can't move.
If it moves, that steamed on a catch. You're like,
all right, it's clear the unintended consequences that many things
that are in fact or previously determined to be a
catch um by spirit of the law, by letter to laws,
(01:35:50):
suddenly are not the The intention of the catch rule
was to bring clarity. Instead, it's become not only unclear
and debatable, but it's also become obnoxious, to which we
have to watch replays again and again and again and
argue whether or not a football moved, even though all
of us now like caught the ball, Who cares if
it moved. I think the intended consequences of the of
(01:36:15):
the rule were fair, were valid, and we're proper, but
the unintended consequences have over have changed, it overwhelmed it.
This happens in business, This happens all over in sports.
I mean, look in the NBA for example. You know
there were two years where they moved the three point
line in Do you guys remember that. Uh? It was
(01:36:36):
Jordan's i think, first of his second three pet that
first title run when he hit those six threes against
the Portland Trailblazers in the first half of one of
the games. The three point line was in. The intention
was the intention was to space the court out more
to get guys to shoot more threes because it had
gotten to be kind of bullyball, okay, but the team
(01:37:00):
didn't react as such. They shot more threes that year boy,
and they moved the three point line. They didn't continue
to let him to shoot threes um. And when they
took away the hand checked rule, the idea was also
freedom of movement. They thought they would create out of
more driving lanes, more dunks, more drives to the basket.
(01:37:20):
What that's instead created is actually more three point shots.
The unintended consequences of rule changes are something that sports
has to deal with on a year by year basis,
and I think it's some of the NFL is having
to deal with on this catch rule. All right, up
(01:37:40):
coming next in the dug out Lip show Man, we
got a lot to get to today. All right, we'll

that you're old you ready for him? Okay, three ways
you know if you're old? Uh this is a uh,
this is not time sensitive. Okay. First wall you know
if you're old is if Um, you will never turn

kids turned down naps, adults are like a nap. Hell yes, um,
you will order vegetables at a restaurant by choice. Digit. Wait,
(01:39:31):
and if you're watching the Grammys and you can only

you're like, I have no idea who that was, even, Um,
what's the dude who's in the new Star Wars movie.
I actually have downloaded one of his songs, but he
has a stage name and as he was up for
Album of the Year, it was Childish Gambino. Right, it's
(01:39:55):
Donald Glover's the actor's name, but he goes by his
stage name for singing his Childish Gambino and actually downloaded
debt Childs Gambino before. But the fact is that he
goes like Childe gave me too, Like, I have no
idea who that is. I don't know, Like, oh, I
know you, I know you've been in TV shows before. Anyway, Um,
Alex Marvez, I know you know as well. If youbody's
working in the Sporting News list two months serious XM
(01:40:18):
NFL radio, he joins us here um. You know, look,
I'd love to say this is David versus Goliath, but
the t one seats. I guess the only thing that
kind of screws it up is it's Nick Foles, and
they seem to have figured out the Nick's Nick Foles things.
This kind of feels like the two best teams in
football playing for the championship, yeah, for this year. And
that's a good feeling, right, I mean, because you know,
(01:40:38):
when you think the Pittsburgh Steelers fell by the wayside
in retrospect, maybe the Jacksonville Jaguars were that team. Maybe
they were the second best team. But they had that
second half, you know, brain freeze against New England Patriots,
starting with fifty five seconds left in the first half,
obviously not trying to get more points on the board,
and it just steamrolled from there. But yeah, you get
that feeling, and Nick Foles was winning people over. But
it's still it's fools, and that's that's the thing that
(01:41:01):
we have to try yet. But you're trying to you're
trying to convince you Blake Burrows was the quarterback of
the second best team in the sport. I'll tell you
what I can't. That's the whole thing. I can't. I
just don't know what Nick Foles we're going to get
on Sunday. I mean, what, what was it that happened
that has transformed him into playing as well as he
has during the playoffs? What is it? I think? I think?
(01:41:21):
I think, honestly, it's the thing that uh we don't
talk enough about in sports television or sports radio because
we assume they all have it. I think a lot
of its confidence, I really do. There's some intangibles that
like case Keenan has all the intangibles in the world,
but he can't throw a football like and he's not
as big as Nick Foles is, and falls showed that
when his mind, when his head is right, when he
(01:41:42):
when he feels comfortable in the game plan basket weeks
have been pretty good, especially last week throwing the ball
deep downfield. I would tend to believe that if you
can be that good after looking that uncomfortable um with
the same offense, it has to be head neck up.
It has to be a confidence thing. And I do
think confidence can can greatly shape your level of performance.
(01:42:04):
And the people believe in him to the teammates, believe
in him and they have stood by him, and that
is significant in this journey as well. But yeah, I
think I think two with with that the home field
advantage that the Eagles enjoyed. It was the best in football.
Number show that they won their average games at home
by fifteen point eight points. I mean, they were pretty
much unbeatable there. Now we're talking neutral field, Dome Stadium.
How much is that play a factor in this as well?
(01:42:25):
Are you a Brady is the greatest quarterback every guy? Yes,
I am. Is Brady a better quarterback than Anon Rodgers? Um? Yeah?
Because success? No? No, no no, no, no, no no, no no. Well,
I mean I just okay, so I'll be okay. Yeah,
I understand. You're you're you're shaping it. It's very smart
what you're doing. You're shaping in the team's success. No, no,
I understand. I'm saying this like before you do you're
(01:42:46):
gonna play Sunday. Yeah, you can pick one guy, you
pick Rodgers, are Brady to be your quarterback? One guy
picked Rodgers, are Brady to be my quarterback? I probably
go with Brady. Really, he's He's not that Aaron hasn't.
But we've seen Aaron Rodgers in one Super Bowl one.
And I know it's a team sport, and that's where
this thing gets difficult. Right, But we've seen Tom Brady
(01:43:07):
time and again lead the Patriots back. We've seen Aaron
do incredible things to hell Mary's, etcetera. But he's been
you know, Brady has been there and done it on
the Super Bowl and and Aaron just hasn't. It's the
power of the of course, it's a part of the
Super Bowl, the biggest game, biggest stage, and you show
up and play. See my way of wording it has
always been like I think Brady is the most accomplished.
I think Aaron Rodgers is the best, got it now,
(01:43:27):
best being, most talented, most ability, what what is best?
I just think he I'm a fan of his. I know,
I'm sure you are. You're not gonna killing Aaron Rodgers, right,
It's like it's like this happens all the time, Like, oh,
he's the second best goat back. What you're you hate him?
Like you No? I just said he's a second or
third or fourth best quarterback of all footballs can played
for a hundred years. We have mentioned Marino or Montana
(01:43:47):
or Elway or you know you haven't been Brett Farve
didn't even get Peyton Manning didn't get a look anyway. Um,
I just think he gives you a better He gives
you more options to win a game. That's it you.
He gives a greater chance to win a game. Which
obviously the counter argument to that is why hasn't it
happened more? But I would say that, you know, that's
(01:44:09):
the tide of Belichick, the fact that they've always kind
of found a way to manipulate the roster around Brady.
But I just his whether it's lack of mobility or
the incredible armed town of Aaron Rodgers, lack of mobility
for Brady, the armed town of Aaron Rodgers, I just
I feel like he checks more boxes. And we've seen
him play well on the biggest stage when we've seen
him play well on smaller stages. Albeit he was down
(01:44:31):
to Atlanta Falcons last year on the road and couldn't
come back and Tom Brady could. So I'm talking to
myself a little bit out of it. My My thought
is though, that if I'm gonna started, I'm playing on Sunday,
I would rather have Aaron Rodgers, and I don't have Brady.
Is that a crazy statement. It's not a crazy statement.
It's it's not a crazy statement. And I also think
back too, we're talking about unable to come back or
hold onto a lead. Think about Aaron and in Seattle
(01:44:53):
a couple of years ago, Super Bowl forty and that
team falling apart that and it's maddening. And you know,
for Packers fans now is just building each year that
goes by Aaron Rodgers. Isn't game he had the bad
calf in that game that limited him and the on
side kick, the miracle two point or is that touchdown
by Russell Wilson, just all those things when that went
bumping the night that was that was a crazy Otherwise,
(01:45:14):
they're in the Super Bowl and we actually finally get
what we all want, which is Brady versus Rogers. Never happens.
It's like the anti Brady manager. It didn't happen. Yeah,
it didn't happen in um, it didn't happen in basketball
that we never got Lebron and Kobe in the same
NBA finals. It's it's it's really weird. Maybe we'll get it. Um,
what do the Patriots look like next year? I know,
next year's next year. But they're losing their assistant coaches right,
(01:45:37):
losing their coordinators. And there's been a lot of talk
of the riff between Kraft and Belichick. What's your best
sense of what they look like next? You know the
story that no one's talking about it, and I'm thinking
of writing it is you know what what if Belichick
walks away? What if he just says, you know what,
I'm done. I have a quarterback who may not, at
age forty one, be able to duplicate what he did
at age forty. I've got to bring up new coordinators
(01:45:59):
at all three spots because special teams is likely going
as well, because the Pats don't pay their assistance. Well,
you have the privilege of working for the Craft family
more than anything else. So that being said, and the
eye world doesn't translate well on radio, I'm sorry. You
can get the quotation fingers too, which is really good. Yes,
exactly on radio. It's perfect for that, right, But you
know this isn't interestingly enough a year to year type
(01:46:21):
thing with Bill because he looks at trends. He was
ahead of the trend when he came to how to
use wide receivers and get him into space right short
passing game, realizing that you have to change the way
you're doing offense. He has won so many different ways,
and I'm sure he'll again be ahead of the curve
if he wants to go. But you're talking about last
year having a four member draft class. That was it.
The Patriots went for broke, going with veteran players, signing
guys in free agency. I'll be curious about that. You
(01:46:43):
know where they go now? Draftwise? Are they still stalking
for the future. They have to find a backup quarterback
to develop behind Brady because you really, how far are
you gonna get with Brian Hoyer. Let's be honest here,
and this wasn't anywhere near the best Patriots team, right,
But they're just smarter than you. That's it. They're smarter
than mistake. And the quarterback didn't get hurt. All right,
let's kind of spitfire around the league. I think the
(01:47:03):
big Major League Baseball's offseason has been awful because no
one's gotten paid and there has outside of Stanton move
into the Yankees, nobody's moved. There will be some movement
with quarterbacks. Um pet Shereman gets the pet Sherman gets
the Giant's job. And he says he lies his quarterback.
You believe him, Yes, I do. And and what they'll
try to do is find a guy and it Listen,
it may not be at the number two pick. That's
(01:47:23):
where things good tricky. You know, Pat went down to
the Recess Senior Bowl for a reason that was to
meet these quarterbacks in person. The Baker mayfields to Josh
Allen's and maybe even some guys in the second onund
Mason Rudolph for example, a Luke Fox. Try to talk
with these guys and see, okay, is this someone where
we want to go there? Because if you go sae
Kwon Barkley at two, you just got yourself. I mean,
one of the great weapons in college football, who's now
(01:47:44):
with you and nowhere and tear on this kid he's
an underclass when no injury history. I throwout this idea
a couple of months ago, like, hey, I know we
all think elis washed, and he may be washed, but
you might get a little bit more out of him
if you have Odell Beckham Jr. You have se Kwon Barkley,
and you rebuild that offensive line. Yeah, sort of works
that way. It's sort of interesting like that, isn't it
when you surround a guy like that with talent? And
(01:48:05):
Pat obviously is a very good offensive coach, and I
think some of the West Coast things that he does
will be better than what it was going on under
Ben McAdoo. I think he stays. I don't. I don't
think he's on the market. The only way that this
changes is this Giants fall in love with the quarterback
at two and they're gonna take him at two and
Eli doesn't want to be looking over his shoulder and
he says, boys, I love you, but I want to
get out of here. Well that's the thing. But here's
(01:48:26):
here's what has to happen. Jacksonville needs to make a
decision on Boardles right before the start of the league
year in mid March. They need to guarantee that nineteen
million dollar salary or not, so you know, they've they've
got to know from elive standpoint, and the Giants may
not be ready to make that decision yet. I think
they end up sticking with Boardles for at least another season,
maybe a two year deal if they if if Blake
wanted to commit her even a three. But they will
(01:48:47):
be looking at quarterbacks early on in this draft, um,
Alex Smith is a clear back where next year Alex
Smith will be maybe with the Arizona Cardinals, maybe working
with Mike McCoy. Maybe you know he remember he too
in the final year of his contract. You think he
wants to go to Cleveland and hold someone's hand. Buffalo
would make some sense because of the way that they
do business there, and you know they have a good defense.
(01:49:08):
You have a defensive minded head coach, he doesn't make mistakes,
he provides a veteran presence, and when you're the Bills,
you're just looking for some sort of answer there. And
Alex for two or three seasons, maybe that guy. But
you know he also again by being a free agent
after this, after the two thousand and nineteen season controls
or eighteen season, holds his control of his fate in
a way, right because they don't have to franchise tag
him if if you don't want him. So I think Alex,
(01:49:29):
you know those Buffalo or Arizona seem the most logical destination.
What about Kirk Cousins. Kirk Cousins, I still think he
sticks for the Redskins, or at least in this form
transition tag him and then see what his value is worth,
and then you decide whether you want to resign him.
So then who's the quarterback of the Broncos. Who's I
think it's gonna be Baker Mayfield or one of those
guys Josh Allen. I think at that point that that's
they'll They'll go get drafted so poorly before what would
(01:49:51):
lead you to? What would lead you be like, like,
here's a guy in John Elway that you would think
knows what a quarterback looks like, yet he's drafted too
tall quarter backs that didn't work that that are not
NFL caliber starters. Kind of amazing. Yeah, and you know,
try to sign Colin Kaepernick, remember how that went. One
of those stories that sort of gets brushed out in
the history. And Colin not wanting to take a pay cut,
so they wanted seven million. He was making fourteen at
(01:50:14):
the time. Yeah. I mean, so you're right, they have
bungled his quarterback position. So maybe Kirk Cousins is there,
maybe they could sign them to a transition sheet. But
then but it's all on the Redskins court. That's the
thing about this. They've been making moves under their salary
cap to clear space to keep Kirk Cousins. They could
cut Josh Norman and it's not helping your team. But
you could cush Josh, cut Josh Norman, free up cap
space and keep Kirk Cousins. Then again, you get into
(01:50:35):
that whole argument. You're cutting off your nose justspite your face. Right,
Great stuff, Alex Marvez fallm on Twitter readers, work in
the Sporting News. Let's do him on serious x M.
Just don't listen him when he's on versus Met difficult
that that's the only thing. And I he kind of
beat me up my Brady Brady Rogers argument. I still
think I'm right, but he kind of beat me up
in and I'm not gonna lie to you. Great stuff, mans,
real quick. By the way, you know you're old when
(01:50:56):
you think Bruno Mars, you think Bruno Sumartino, the guy
he was named after. Go, yeah, that's dude. You know
you're old. I like that, you know you're old. I
don't think we're gonna add that though to the You
gotta make it because other guys like Bruno who like dude,
if you gotta google it, Come on, man, you gotta
keep up Alex Marvez bringing the knowledge to us. We'll
get to Roger Goodell on the catch rule in a second. Um,
(01:51:17):
pretty interesting actually, the old law of unintended consequences. But
first let's bring in Dan buy or find out? Oh
I got ask? I'll boll get to that in a second. Uh, Dan,
what do you got? What are you working on? Well, Doug,
I can tell you that today is there. This week
is the tenure anniversary of Tom Brady being proposed to
at a media day. It was Super Bowl forty two
in Arizona where Tom Brady was proposed to. Well. Tonight,
(01:51:41):
it's a Monday night. Back then it was a Tuesday.
We will have Opening Night at Super Bowl fifty two
in St. Paul Is. The Eagles and Patriots will meet
the media for the first time. Patriots hex just got
to Minneapolis. St. Paul gets the meat gets Opening Night.
It's hey, Saint Paul. We'll give you hockey and we'll
give you Opening Night. We're gonna take basketball and NFL
(01:52:02):
football in the Super Bowl and the and the Final
four upcoming. St. Paul is a nice, quaint little town.
But actually I actually like it. I actually like I'm
I'm sitting here going. I don't love having a Super
Bowl here, but uh, I actually like the Twin Cities.
I think this would be a cool place. Everybody knows
he's ever lived here. It's like, man, it's an awesome
place to raise kids. He just you know, five months
(01:52:22):
out of the year it's cold, little chili. Yeah, for sure.
You just gotta you just gotta deal with it. Thursday
night is the night that's supposed to be freakishly cold.
You know that, right, Well, you just won't go outside
on Thursday, that's all staying stay in the mall of
America where we are. You literally could stay in the
Mall of America and like I do they hear this
place out at night or they just like let people
I mean could just like eat a bunch of shake
(01:52:44):
shack and pass out. Well, anyway, here's the here's the
here's the I know you have other stuff to hold
on quickly, Let's go to Dug Gottlieb for the latest
weather report. Thanks Dan. Dan. Tomorrow we have a high
of twenty six and a low of twenty seven. Wednesday
will be the pick of the week in terms of
(01:53:05):
being outdoors. We'll get about freezing at thirty four degrees.
But Wednesday night it will turn CHILEI zero degrees is
the high Thursday only eight degrees for a high temperature,
and it'll you know, it'll it'll get down to a
brisk minus four degrees fahrenheit. Uh. The night before the
Super Bowl, Dan, I should think you should also stay inside.
It'll be negative seven and snow showers in the Twin cities.
(01:53:29):
Dan more on traffick and weather on the ones back
to you give that a B plus. The only thing
you messed up is you said a high of twenty six,
low of twenty seven. I don't know if that's possible,
but that was but but still still very good. But yeah, tonight,
fans of Wisconsin's coldest weather, you remember, oh I remember
some winshows of forty below. Well, I'm back a couple
(01:53:51):
of years ago with my sister and it was to
visit my sister, me and my wife and it was
a negative seventeen on the your wife's your sister to
be at my sister. You went to my sister's place
for Christmas with my wife and it was negative seventeen
on the car dial. That says, yeah, and that's not
even I will say this about the car downt kind
of doubt. Not always act. It's like the bank, the
bank one time's never right. Temperature really not that close enough.
(01:54:15):
I was in Russia. It was negative forty degrees outside
negative forty celsius. I'm not sure if you're aware of
this fahrenheit and celsius fahrenheit. You know, like you get
to hundred degrees fahrenheit, it's still only like thirties something celsius.
When you go to minus they actually kind of come together.
So it was like minus forty celsius is like minus
forty fahrenheit, and you had to cover up all parts
(01:54:37):
of your face and you get like frozen boogers. It
would be like any anything that was exposed that I
had moisture would what else? You got a story? I've
experience that. By the way, I mentioned it to the
tenure anniversary of that proposal. Uh, let's let's take a
little flashback quick to the woman in the wedding dress.
Are you really wow, I've never had a proposal. Yeah,
(01:55:00):
there was the wedding proposal. A super Bowl forty dude,
no gronk tonight, NFL network saying he's not gonna be
a part of the media festivities the news to pass
along college tubes. Villanova remains number one in the latest
Associated Press Top twenty five rankings. Virginia is number two
per to three. Duke stays at four in Michigan State,
jumping in to the top five. No Joel Emba tonight
(01:55:21):
for the Sixers against the Bucks. Sitting out of back
to back. And how about this? The l A Colosseum
has a new name, a naming rights deal with United
Airlines fifteen years, sixty nine million dollars, according to The
l A Times. Gronically happy at that number. Ladies and gentlemen,
Welcome to the United Airlines Memorial Colosseum. That's what you're
gonna happen. You do, and they ask you to get
(01:55:42):
up out of your seat, Get up out of your seat? Okay,
thanks United Around. They're only gonna have six seats in
each row. So it's gonna be a B, C and D.
That's gonna the whole new renovation. It's it's pretty amazing.
The games twenty minutes late again. Why do I have
to pay for WiFi? Why do I have to go
(01:56:06):
go online? Oh no, there's no Yeah, you have to
pay for everything. They come by to bring you water.
How about those drink cards going downhill or pushing them
up the stadiums. It's gonna be impossible. It's gonna be
the worst. And that's Dan Buyer with the news. As
conditions on the field change, so can your insurance. He
needs to talk with a farmer's agent today so you
(01:56:27):
can assess whether your policy is game ready. Find an
agent to add Farmers dot com farmers dumb. I love that.
I love that. It's like one of my favorite things
on Earth. Um Coming up next, Dan Buyer will join
us and we'll find out that if the Browns need
(01:56:49):
as much with the Browns need as much help as
they can get, Unfortunately they might not get it, will
explain next. Car shopping can be confusing with terms like
dealer price, Liz price, an invoice price. True Car shows
what other people paid for the car you want. You

Tradio Once You Love a Bigger tax refund. Tax Slayer
was recently raided number one for maximum refunds. You have
more cash to spend on one of the heck, you
want to spend it on this season, go out and
slay at maxu refunded tax slayer dot com. Let's get
to a game. I get to press, the press, same press,
game press. That's all right, Dan up fire very much
(01:57:32):
at home. The Wisconsin accent coming out with every sentence,
it's all like my wife, My wife goes my wife
has no accent, she goes back to Oklaholma and all
of a sudden, y'all and she starts there it is,
starts using wrong tenses for words, and like, what is
going on? What you're talking about? I don't know what
you're talking about, Like you've been you've been home for
like five minutes. Anyway, what we got by it happens.
Let's see if we got something in my bag, that'll
(01:57:54):
see what we've picked here big. I've been trying to
work on that for years. Okay, patre in Eagles tonight
having their media availability, but no, Rob Gronkowski still hasn't
clard concussion protocol. So Gronk's not gonna be at the
Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul because he hasn't cleared
concussion protocol. Once he clears concussion protocol, he can meet
(01:58:16):
with the media. But yes, media festivities get going tonight.
With the Patriots now in town. I think there's still
little gamesmanship. I don't think they just don't want gront
to talk so they won't clear him. He's been practicing fully,
He's gonna play on Sunday. I mean, really, if if
the concussion protocol is designed to protect brains, it has this,
this has no use on Brob Gronkowski, Right, yeah, there
(01:58:38):
you go. Um. But for for the media, that's kind
of a bummer, right, he was the one guy, the
one pot give you something you're you would hope that
there would be a lot of reporters around him and
he would have fun. But I'm not gonna be the
case tonight. First Night or Media Night whatever is that
is to media folk what New Year's eas. New Year's
(01:59:00):
Eve is two party partiers, right, it's amateur hour, it's
the side hills. You like, you're not gonna get great quote.
She's kind of a circus. And there'll be some reporters
to try and make a bigger name for themselves as
opposed to just get into quote. That is the problem.
It's because there's no I don't want to say that
there aren't any good questions, but there's too many garbage
to get good answers. So even if you ask a
(01:59:22):
good question, the players are so aware that they don't
want to get caught up in anything. You're not even
getting good answers, you know. That's the disappointing thing. I
don't know, Bill, I've got other stuff in the NFL,
if that's cool with you, including Brown's tackle Joe Thomas,
who's under contract through teen but recently said maybe the
Browns need to look for their left tackle of the future,
(01:59:43):
kind of implying this could be his last year in
the Cleveland Browns uniforms. Get me, maybe they'll trade him,
but says maybe the Browns need to look for a
long term replacement for him. Yeah, that was weird, very weird.
It's weird, and it's like weird timing for him to say,
like he had the most consecutive games played, then he
got hurt like the very next game, and then the
(02:00:04):
like honored him, and you know, and I was like,
you know, maybe you should look for the like think
about that with your wife, like Hey, listen, you're going
out Like, I'm not saying you hook up with somebody,
but if you want to find another guy just in case,
go for it. She's like, excuse me, Yeah, that that
does seem odd. But Joe Thomas has been brought up
in trade talks for years, nothing was ever done. We'll
(02:00:25):
see if something is done in the season. ESPN says
the Broncos are shopping cornerback and Keep to Leave now
not now that the report is out. You wonder how
much value to Leave could have. But did have a
good season despite being in his early thirties. Yeah, I mean, look,
he there's lots of issues that to Leave. Uh, there's always,
there's always. It's not easy. I like Keep to Leave,
had him on a bunch of times on radio. I
(02:00:47):
just don't know what it's like to live with a
keep to lead day in day that second as much
as the quarterback situation gets killed and rightfully so. The
no fly zone had a lot of planes in it
this year. If you know what I mean, it was
it was that secondary was not what it was built
to be. Bratty Hocus found work. He's the new defensive
line coach of the Carolina Panthers. So the former Michigan
coach going back to the NFL and go back to
(02:01:09):
his roots. That's what his roots are, defensive line. He'll
actually have to have a headset on now right, We're like, oh,
but wait, what is what is it? A headset? That's true?
What do you know when I talked about it was
it was on this thing. I bring it up because
when he was a coach of Michigan he never had
the headset. U. Yeah, I don't have any idea what's
going on? Then you leave a player in with a
concussion and that's your copped out or cop out. How
(02:01:29):
about this? We touched on it just a a little
bit earlier. But the l A Colisseum if you missed this,
now has a new name, the United Airlines Memorial Coliseum,
as a naming rights deal has been reached to the
home of USC and the temporary home of the Rams.
The United Airlines Memorial Colisseum is what it will be
known as fifteen years, sixty nine million dollars anything. And
(02:01:51):
what's interesting the sc is now s he owns the stadium. Uh,
they're doing a redo on one side this year, the
other side the next year and then the rest of
the stadium the third year in the off season. So
they'll do it kind of piecemeal. But there's I mean, like, look,
had that stadium been redone twenty five years ago, they
never would have lost the Raiders. Fact never lost Raiders.
Could have had the Rams and the Raiders. It just
took this long and the s C to to own
(02:02:14):
the stadium in order for these fixes to be made.
I don't know if you collected baseball cards, Doug when
you were young. Yeah, but this news coming up from Tops,
Aaron Judge will be card number one in the Tops
Baseball one series. Aaron Judge will, yes, so card number
one on the back of his card will be the
first card in the teen sets, and Top says like,
(02:02:35):
I haven't collected cards in a while, but Tops was
like seven hundred and ninety four cards to get a
full set. Batting practice gonna be for the Yankees, uh,
Sean Carlos Stanton Aaron Judge both at batting practice. Oh
to be amazing. I mean that honestly'd be that that
will actually be worth it to go there. Early. I
used to go to batting practice and get autographs to
Anaheim Stadium and you could haven't signed your card. You
(02:02:56):
know the number one number one. Right, There's there's the
high of watching Yankees batting practice, and then the low
of getting a checklist in your pack of cards. What
an absolute waste of opening up a pack of cards checklist?
Oh gosh, it was the worst. Uh. The Ganati Glovekin
Canallo Alvarez fight rematch yes, set for May five, So
(02:03:16):
remember they fought to a draw earlier. They're gonna have
a rematch in Vegas. You pronounced Gannati's name so perfectly.
I just go a triple to you to completely avoid it. Right.
It's like people that say great freak because they don't
want to say yes the company and you nail that
good work. I don't know why they just don't say
yannest it's easy enough, yeah, because I think people think
he's like Yanni, remember the yeah that could be Uh.
(02:03:40):
Finally again, as Peter King said, great hat you picked
out today? I'm big in the hat? Do I need
to Can I switch that? Or just keep going with
Twins cities that No, you can't go away from the
TC and so much so. The Twins used to have
a a like a set of twins is like their
mascot named Minnie and Paul, because you had Minneapolis and
Saint Paul. Maybe I'll get it tomorrow, get out there
(02:04:03):
and pressed. That was the press. I noticed no old
school Brewers hat out of you. I would have thought
you could. You know, you're back kind of close where
like an old school Brewers had the old m B Brewers. Yeah,
I've got one at home. I've got one, I just
didn't bring it. Well, there's lids right down the street here,
right right down, uh down the level. Ryan Music will
be hanging out Victoria's Secret because that's what that's what
creepy guys do. We got great guests tomorrow, join us,
(02:04:23):
won't you? On the Doug got Leap Show Live in Minneapolis,
