Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening Boom, What Up America? Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox
Sports Radio Live from Super Week in Minneapolis, presented by
Black Rifle Coffee Man. We got a great show for you. Uh,
current and maybe future or maybe former Redskin quarterback Kirk
(00:22):
Cousins will join us. Kirk Cousins will join us next hour,
as will uh. Former Pro Bowl running back D'Angelo Williams,
as will Jason lock Him for that CBS is NFL
insider Big Jeff Schwarz will put down that BALI he's
eaten and come over and join us, and we'll talk
about some disrespectful blocks from the offensive line of these teams.
(00:44):
So we got honey of football. UM, I have an
interesting thought on the future of Nick Foles. I want
to get to something no one is talking about, but
they will talk about. We're gonna be ahead of a story,
but a story we're a little bit behind because it
literally broke the second I put my headset down here
at Mall of America outside of Minneapolis and sat uh
(01:06):
St Paul or like in Bloomington. We're not right next
to the airport. Like if you land, uh, you could
probably walk here faster than getting your bags and gett
an uber and driving over here. Anyway, we're Radio Row.
We've got a great list of guests all week that
week long. You miss any of the guests or any
of the shows, download the podcast wherever you download podcast iTunes,
(01:26):
Fox Sports Trader dot Com at all um or you
can follow us on Twitter. We tweet out the podcast
inter every day. Follow us on Facebook. Same thing. Blake
Griffin was traded like an hour after the show was
over last night. Now I could give you the particulars
of why it went down. A matter of fact, I
will in a second. First thing is is there why
(01:48):
you may not believe in the Madden curse? Right? Tom
Brady is on the cover of Madden. I believe Tom
Brady is on the cover of Madden. The Madden curse
seems to be gone. You know what is alive and well?
The Kardashian Curse. Rashad McCants, Reggie Bush, lamar Odom, Tristan
Thompson and oh yeah, by the way, Blake Griffin. Look
(02:10):
at their stats before and stature before, look at their
stature afterwards. Kardashian kit Court curses, real kids, and Blake
Griffin just got went from the best descent in America
in in the NBA to the one of the worst. Right,
Like all things being equal, when things are going bad,
(02:32):
you get eliminated from the playoffs, are injured, you'll lose whatever.
When you're descending into l a X Airport, you're like,
you know what, at least it's seventy five and Sonny,
the traffic sucks and the Texas are high. There's a
reason the texts are high, because it's worth it, especially
when you're making thirty five and forty million million dollars
over the next four years. Like, let's not kid ourselves
(02:54):
over the well the taxes. Like, dude, seriously, you're making
forty million dollars. You can pay your fair share now.
His descent after games will be back in Detroit, which
is a great airport. The new terminal is amazing, right,
the little train inside hotel inside great Um and the
suburbs honestly are awesome. But the arena is in downtown. Nikes. Nikes. Now,
(03:20):
the trade itself makes sense, Okay from the Pistons standpoint. Look,
here's the dirty little secret about the NBA. Okay, it's
really hard to lure any free agents. It just is.
It's hard to get any free agents because with the
bird rights and the new Supermac's contracts, you'd have to
(03:44):
be crazy or have to be ridiculously rich. You want
to bet on yourself, like Kevin Durant, to want to
leave where you are to go somewhere else. And when
you leave somewhere else, no one signs in the Midwest.
Right the flyover states or even the layout he states, right, Utah,
Salt Lake layover state, Detroit, Michigan layover state. You know
(04:08):
where the flyover these are layout. You only stop in
the Twin Cities for a layover. And please stop with
the I've been to Salt Lake. If you've only been
to Salt Lakes Airport, you haven't been to the Twin Cities.
If you know what, I flew Delta one. I flew
Northwest one time back when it was northwest. And that's
not going to the Twin Cities. But the only way
those places Oklahoma City, New Orleans last year, what they do?
(04:33):
How do they get to Marcus Cousins You trade for him.
You can't get free agents to sign there. It doesn't
say anything awful about your city, it's just the reality
of it. Outside of Miami where it's beautiful and there's
no state income tax, which which does lure some people.
Plus pat Riley and outside of there, and maybe Houston
(04:55):
and Dallas right again, no state income tax. Owners that
are progressive, Big eighties where people want to play and
it's warm. I mean New York can't even lure people anymore,
right Chicago. Chicago is not a free agent destination like
used to be. L A. We think is going to
be a free agent destination because it always has been
and it's the Lakers and maybe this is the Clippers.
(05:17):
It's really hard to get anybody to lure anybody as
a free agent unless you got a really good team,
and unless you live in somewhere it's really warm. Dallas, Houston,
l A. I think, New York, Miami, that's about it. Right,
So to Detroit, this makes sense, right. The only part
(05:39):
that they didn't really want to part with with Tobias Harris.
And like, look, Tobias hair is a good player, is
twenty five years old, he's under contract for the next
year and a quarter. That stinks. But Tobias Harris isn't
what Blake Griffin is, which is not There's Tiers of
players in the NBA, and he's a star. He's a
star not just because he's in TV commerce and he'll
(06:00):
be in movies. He's a star because at the end
of a game, at the end of a shot clock,
you can give him the ball and he'll get a
shot or a creative shot for somebody else. Period. There's stars,
there's ancillary parts, and then there's role players, and then
there's the fact girls at the problem just happy to
be there right the last guy in the bench. So
(06:21):
for Detroit it makes sense because they're nowhere and the
only way to get somewhere is get a star. And
they also have Andre Drummond. You get a two big
guys who can pass with a point guard who can't
really pass, and you try and fit some pieces around
him and hope it works because what you were doing
wasn't working. Meanwhile, for the Clippers, they've done what it's
(06:47):
really hard to do but you honestly wish your team
would do, which is like, hey, guess what, We've had
a dream first half of the season, with the exception
of Blake being hurt and Blake's always hurt. We got
more out of lou Williams, whoever thought possible more out
of DeAndre we ever thought possible, and we're still in
ninth place. So if the best that we could possibly
(07:07):
achieve his sixth or seventh place, why let's blow it
up and let's get us a shot at Lebron James
or a shot at some big name free agent, because
DeAndre Jordan's next, and maybe maybe Lou Williams goes with him. Um.
(07:28):
Lebron James had this to say about NBA stars getting traded.
Player gets traders. They was doing with best for the franchise.
But when a player, the size of leave is he's
not loyal, he's a snake, he's not committed. That's the
narrative of high goals. So I know that first in
I know I goes first, you know, and look, he's
(07:51):
right that this move was not personal. What are they saying,
the Godfather? This was strictly business. It's not personal. It's
strictly business. Right, it's not personal. It's strictly a business.
But let's also be honest. Lebron James did, in fact
make a business decision several times over, and he tried
to make it. He made the personal decision was to
(08:13):
come back to Cleveland. And I know that people are
that that we're being critical of the Clippers for hanging
his jersey in the rafters, saying he was a Clipper
for life. That feels weird. Well, let's also let's not
be disingenuous. Blake Griffin resigned with the Clippers because they
could resign him to an amount that no one else
could resign him for. His decision was business. His decision
(08:36):
was okay. That's the honest truth. The Thunder and the
Pistons are in the same boat. The Pelicans and the
Pistons are in the same boat. That's why the Thunder
had to trade for Carmelo and for Paul George an
expiring deal, and the Pelicans took on DeMarcus Cousins. The
(08:57):
only way you get a guy of that stature, I
guess two ways. One you get lucky and you draft
him when you're really, really bad, or two as your
acquirement free agency, and when you get him, you hold
onto him as long as you can and you assign
them to away more money than they're worth, hoping that
they will stay. And they're not staying because it's personal.
They're staying because it's business. It's not personal. It's strictly business.
(09:20):
In the NBA, it's about having a star, just like
in the NBA it's about having a quarterback. Let me see,
in the end, the NFL just is. So I understand
what the Clippers are doing, I understand what the Pistons
are doing, and I do think that Blake Griffin has
gone from being overrated to underrated. I think it's gonna
(09:42):
be fascinating to see what a star player does going
from the West to the east as opposed to East
to the west, like so many have done. And maybe
more than anything, I I go back to what I
heard UH Jerry West say this offseason when he signed
down with the Clippers. He talked about what a great
(10:04):
owner Steve Bomber was to work for, and how much
he wants the champion, the individual causes and growth of
his players, and about how they want to build a culture,
a championship culture there. And that's why Jerry West was
brought on board. This is a move to get Lebron
James and Paul George the same thing the Lakers are
(10:26):
trying to do. The only differences they don't have a
LaVar ball problem. Now they're still the Clippers but Lebron's
not from l A, so he doesn't look at the
Clippers the way that everybody from l A looks at
the Clippers. All Right, the whole thing is fascinating me,
and I'm thankful for it because usually super weak we
(10:48):
end up talking about the game and the corner and
the and the and the what are the lines the
the the tea not the teasers? What are the lines
called Vegas? The lines that don't always have to do
with warts? The prop bets? Oh that is that's bad radio, right.
Let me read you the funniest prop bets from Now
we got actual sports to talk about. We have a
(11:09):
star player being traded six months after signing what we
thought was a lifetime commitment. But you know, the Clippers,
just like other folks in l A. They got married
then six months later, like you know, there could be
another chick coming out that's available that might be interested
in us, and they have the wandering eye, as teams
(11:32):
are known to do. They got back off the honeymoon
and realized, yeah, they've lived together before and it wasn't
that great. Can the Patriots offensive line stop that nasty
defensive front from the Philadelphia Eagles a nine year NFL
VET and a connoisseur of all things good food. Jeff

super Week in Minneapolis, is presented by Black Rifle Coffee.
He uh. He has co authored a book about food.
(13:19):
He has authored some disrespectful blocks of his own. He's
he always enlightening and entertaining and he is a guest
hosted for Clay Travis. How's the guest host in my show?
Which we may have to make that available to him.
He's Jeff Schwartz. He played nine years in the National
Football League Kansas City Giants. I think you're in Minnesota too, Yeah,
you're in Minnesota. That was fun, um sort of fun.
(13:39):
That was your a. J Pierson rushed for two yards?
So what was the president that he got? You? At
running backs when they go for some records, ever, always
get you a present with what he get you, so
he got a snowmobiles. However, I did not have a
good time in Minnesota, so I was I left the
second I could, like it didn't go well here. I
like the city, the fans are great, but like the
coaching staff, they just didn't go well. So I left
(14:00):
as soon as I could to get a snowmobile. Got nothing.
The best gifting. You didn't get your snowobile. I don't
want nothing to do. I want nothing to do with
with the vikings. So basically I was just lied to
about playing time. I got there, I got her in camp,
I came back, came back, uh play, didn't play. The
first three weeks they told me I was healthy enough
to play. They told me I would split reps with
(14:21):
the guy right guard, and then they rescinded that offer
basically Saturday and said you're gonna go. He's gonna get
too serious. You get one series. If you're an offensive linement,
you need to get in a rhythm, so you can't
just have to I was getting two series of game
between twelve and sixteen plays a game, and by the
third game doing that, I asked offensive line coach, like
what's going on? Like why am I not getting more reps.
He said, well, you're a veteran, you can figure it
out through fifteen. But no, I like, what what? What
(14:43):
is that? And then he forgot to play me one
game and then just I was over. I was I
just got tired of being lied right to my face.
I got it. I actually um, I played this interesting.
I played for Creem abdul Jabar in the USB l
USBL at Oaklahoma City. And what happened was I was
playing and I sorry, if if, if you want of
these people like I don't care about your minor league
basketball story or Jeff's uh NFL lineman football story. You
(15:07):
know what, Listen, you can find another sports radio station
where they're interviewing athletes who are pitching things NonStop. I
think this is a little bit better content. Anyway, So
I was playing in Israel, and in ISRAELI fooling around
with the money, and I was like, and my coaches
and my my coach in Israel was Israeli, and there
was one other Israeli that could actually really play, and
I didn't really I didn't understand the politics of it,
(15:29):
to which the only other guy was Israeli that could
play was also kind of a point guard and so
it ate into my minutes and I hated it, and
so March first I I made them. It was like
in late February, I went to the president of the
team and I was like, hey, listen, you guys have
been doing some shady stuff in my check right, Like
I know how much I'm supposed to get a month,
and you're waiting till the shekel rate is is better
(15:52):
for you just to save a hundred bucks. It's stupid.
If you give me your word, I'm gonna get all
my money, I will stay. And I would have had
to stay after the season and actually, uh go through
basic training in the army right, And the guy kept
saying like I will do my best, Like no, no no,
I just give your word, like right, Like I'll do it.
So then I go to Phoenix. I'm in the A
B A and I'm ball and I'm playing great. Um
(16:12):
and the guy in US in Oklahoma City calls and
he's like, yeah, I want you to play for Kareem.
You're gonna be the highest player paid player in the
USB L You're playing in Oklahoma City. Everybody'll love you.
Will make the NBA scouts come and see you. You're ready, Bubba.
So I come and I play and Kareem, because Kareem
and the owner hated each other, Kareem would take it
out on me and they would each they would each
lie to me, like why I wasn't playing minutes right?
(16:33):
And like in basketball, like look, I hate to to
shoot down people's stats, but in the way in basketball
is now played, if you're a point guard and you
get the ball in your hands for thirty five minutes,
you're gonna get ten assist and you're probably gonna get
ten points. It doesn't mean you're gonna win. Just the
volume of possessions, right. It's the same thing with you.
The volume of plays that you need in order to
be happy, to be you, to be yourself that you need.
(16:54):
And I totally get it. I left mid season. I
was hosting a radio show and playing at night, and
I just like, I don't need this in my life anymore.
Uh yeah, yeah, you're the second person. You're the second
person I know who played bass on Israel who had
the same problems with money. Well that's Greece. Is is
synonymous with never paying their guys. Uh Israel, Israel, they'll
(17:17):
nickel and dime you have pretty good. They'll live up.
They live down to every negative Israeli reputation. Jeff Schwartz
joining us here. Okay, so I want to ask you
about the Eagles defensive line versus the Patriots offensive line. Okay,
so the Eagles, um, they run a wide nine, which
I only know because the defense VENs are way out
(17:37):
wide like like visually those of us who didn't play football, like, okay,
why nine means defense VENs are way out? It's super
spread out. Okay, Um, doesn't that mean you should just
run the ball against it? Like the shouldn't the gaps
be huge? Well? So, because they have that alignment, they
they are inside guys Fletcher, Cox and uh and Journey again,
they're up the field penetrators. So they get up the
(17:59):
field of forces. You to have it forces like your
weird spacing. So if if they were just like two
gap guys like New England has where they just kind
of hold you up and see and kind of read
it out, be a ton of holes. So the way
they do is they fire these these defensive linement up
the field, create these gaps, and then linebackers fill it.
They do a great job, but they rotate about eight deep,
which is really big for them. The Y nine pushes
(18:19):
tackles back into the quarterbacks, and they obviously they don't.
They don't often run around the quarterback. They kind of
run through the tackle to the quarterback. And you know,
playing Tom Brady, you have to get to Tom Brady yea,
every snap. It's not just like twice a game, it's
every snap otherwise he'll put up twenty points. Okay, so
does that their style of defense which does do a
good job of pressure in the quarterback, but not always
(18:40):
up the middle, right, it's more on the edges. Well,
Fletcher Cox is a monster in the middle. He is.
If you if Aaron Donald wasn't in the NFL, people
would say that Fletcher Cox is the best defensive tackle. Okay,
but they and they also rotate guys and also like
one of their things is they spend a bunch of
money in the defensive line, so they can rotate some
rotate some guys that they're fresh. In the fourth course,
how does how does this? How does in a game up? Matchups?
(19:00):
How do they match up against pats the team or
the defensive line both? Oh, I think that they're the
Eagles itself are more talented than than New England. So
is Jacksonville. The problem is quarterback. I mean it's but
Folds hit better than than Bordles. If Folds plays average
and no turnovers, he doesn't have to for for for
three or fifty average no turnovers, and the rest of
the team plays their abilities, they have every opportunity to
(19:23):
beat in New England. The problem is Tom Brady. They
have to just continually score and score and score points
because as hear as the Eagles are on defensive line,
you know they'll the picture will find ways to score points.
They they very rarely don't score points except when they
play the Giants. So if they can replicate that um
and just hit Tom Brady over and over over again,
which I don't think it's gonna happen because the Eagles,
I mean, even the Patriots offense line is not half bad.
(19:44):
They actually played decently well against Jacksonville. UM, so it's
gonna be a close game. I think it's gonna could
be a better game that people think that will be. UM. Okay,
so here here's my question, and I've asked this to
a lot of people. I'll keep asking all week. Do
you think Brady is the greatest quarterback ever. Yes, because
he's done it for so long, through so many wide receivers,
so many running backs, so many offensive linemen. Um, you know,
(20:07):
so numerous uh coordinators. You know, Belichick controls the defense,
he does not control the offense. You know, like Bill
Walsh with with Joe Montana. Now, I grew up a
Niners fan, right, so I love the Niners. Um, at
least I used to. I like them more now they
have Jimmy Chi back. But you know, there was one
system the entire time, basically the same guys. Right now
you're in the free agency league. So for sixteen years
(20:28):
to win three championships, then take a ten year break,
win two more, possibly win a third. UM, with all
the guys rotating through, it has to be Tom Brady. Okay, Uh,
if if they're gonna play Sunday, would you rather have
Tom Brady your quarterback around Rogers quarterback? That's a good question, um,
Tom Brady. Yeah, I think I think Rogers does too
much outside of the offense. UM. And when you play
(20:50):
a defensive line like the Eagles, I don't think you
want to do that. UM. Now, Rogers plays an offense
that that you have to do that because the offense
is designed. It's it's it's interesting that the offense of
the Packers and what mcado ran in New York, it's
it's not really um on the scheme to get guys open,
so on wide receivers themselves to get open. So that's
why Rogers has to scramble so much because you guys
(21:10):
just don't get open. Eventually they do. Um. I mean,
Aaron Rodgers one of the best throwers of the football
of all time. I mean, he's got an amazing arm.
What he can do is outstanding. But Tom Brady has
won all these games like that has to mean something. Agree.
But but he's also played with a better coach, a
better organization, better teams. I think if you flip those guys,
they're probably about the same the championship level. Yeah yeah,
(21:34):
but I still I still like, I mean, I just
like Tom Brady did. How about last night? Do we
have it last night? To sound like, Look, I want
to just like Tom Brady. I swear to God, I
want like you know, don't no, I mean, like, look,
he's better, but I want you to listen to what
he said. We don't have it. I we don't have it.
(21:55):
Last night, he was asked about the radio host in
Boston who called his kid to piss in and like, look,
I I think people went crazy because it said pissing,
and they're like, it's not it's not in a term
of endearment. But I think we knew probably poor choice
of work. Right. So they go to Brady and they're like,
do you want the guy to be fired? He's like, no, no,
(22:16):
everybody's made a mistake, said something stupid. I'm just a
dad protecting my kid, right, Like I I you wanted
him to take a listen. I want to hate Tom Brady. Right.
He's good looking, his wife's good looking, he's good at football,
he's good in the clutch. This is his chance to
stomp another human being's career completely into oblivion. And here's
what he did. I tried to come on this show
(22:37):
for many years. You guys a lot that that that
that was from w E I uh. Anyway, the point
is he could have stopped him into oblivion, and he didn't.
Like what kind of guy is that? You're not supposed
to be classy too. I think he gets a bad
rap because he posts for the Patriots and because he
(22:59):
when I looked about Tom Brady's he's pretty authentic, right
he he he goes after asking Martin like, I mean, like,
he doesn't pretend he doesn't have money, right he's he's
modeling ugs, he's driving cars that cost two or fifty thousand.
He doesn't pretend that he's not the best looking, has
a model wife, has this great like, he doesn't pretend
that that's not like Tiger when Tagger to the buick
ads right, like Payment Manning, he's like, he's he's he
(23:20):
doesn't pretend on that he's someone he's not. And so
I I've always enjoyed and I like when I like
guys who win, like I'm jealous of their success. I
wish I could have that success. Okay, here's tom Brady.
Last night. I didn't hear much you know about it,
but I didn't. I didn't get into it too much.
I just said, I certainly hope the guy's not fired.
That's I would I would hate for that to happen.
I think we all have careers, and we all, you know,
(23:43):
make mistakes, and I mean I'd hate for someone to
have to change their life over something like that. That
was certainly not what he intended. Yeah, he's like, look,
I feel bad. I made a big deal about it.
I was mad at the time. I'm not mad anymore.
Just you know, the guy I to cease repmand and
that's enough. He's allowed to be angry, of course. I
mean we have daughters. Like I think if if they
(24:04):
said that to my daughter, i'd react the same way. Um.
But yeah, I don't think I should be fired for
one comment. Yeah. The only thing I would I wouldn't.
I wouldn't defend calling your kids somebody's kid a piss hand.
I would say that once you do a reality show
and you offer your family up and say this is
the reality of my life, and the kids a little
whiney or whatever. I just it was just a really
poor choice of words. I just feel like kids should
(24:25):
be even on reality TV. The reality show is really
about tom. I do think the kids should always be
out of it. I get I get it. I get
like I put my kids on social media, I understand,
But I just think that why why would you attack
a not attack tax the wrong world, but why would
you even like the entire show? Why would you comment
on the five year old girl? That's why he's on
it at night, on a Friday night on sport. I
understand that. I get it. That's that's you know that,
(24:47):
that's not that it's not that wasn't the point of
the conversation. But you know, I don't know why he
would do it. I did. I love Tom's reaction. I
really did. Um. Okay, so a couple of things here.
We've seen Alex Smith around here, right, and your brother
block for Alex. He did, and he's out like everyone. No,
he just kind of comes comes off a great year
(25:09):
in Kansas City, a great year I I when I
hosted the Herd, we put his numbers up. The numbers
are the numbers are almost identical to Tom Brady's. Brady
threw a couple more touchdowns, a couple more interceptions, the yards,
about the same, completion percentage about the same. He's athletic,
he hasn't been hurt, like, there is no knocks against him,
except for the fact that they, like the Chiefs, always
(25:31):
lose early in the playoffs and he catches a bunch
of the blame. Um, where do you think is the
right fit for him? So I'm not entirely sure the
Chiefs are gonna get rid of him. I think it
depends on what the draft pick will be that's offered.
They don't, they have no, they don't have to get
rid of him, and you read is secure there. He's
not going anywhere. If they lose again in the playoffs
in the first round next year, he ain't going anywhere. Um,
(25:52):
what was the point point of drafting Pat Mahomes? And well,
I think I look, he showed. I think he showed
in the Denver game week seventeen he was better. And
I think a lot of us thought he would be.
I think I was one of those. And obviously I
kind of know what's happening in there. Um, but if
they don't have to trade him, they don't. They don't
have to. Like if I'll say this, I'll put this,
if he's on the team next year, he's gonna start,
(26:13):
he's off the team. Obviously he won't. So I think
the Browns are a really good option for him. With
John Dorsey, the former Chiefs GM who brought Alex Smith.
John Dorsey said recently through Joe Thomas, if Joe Thomas
said this that that they're gonna have a veteran quarterback there.
So Alex Smith makes perfect sense. Jacksonville. You can't tell
me that that they would not beat the Patriots if
if Alexmith was a quarterback. Um, so that's a great
learning spot for him. Maybe the Jets needed quarterback. Maybe
(26:36):
the Broncos. Dude, I don't think you think the Chiefs
trained into the Broncos. The Cardinals need a quarterback. I mean,
there's plenty of spots four Alex. I love Jacksonville. You
have a great defense, you have a good run game.
They won't. You won't ask Alex do very much. They'll
appreciate Alex there as well. Your Chiefs fans, for some
reason do not appreciate Alex whatsoever. Um argue with the
NonStop about them, because that's because he went like a
year without throwing a touchdown to a wide received he did. Yeah,
(26:59):
that's very you. But I think they made the playoffs
that year though. They did, which is pretty remarkable, and um,
you know, but look, I played a playoff game with
Alex Smith where he threw for four hundred yards in
a playoff game. Like I've seen him do it. I
know he can do it, and this year he did it.
And so I don't know if they're gonna rush to
train him. I think people come and call to get him.
They want a price. If they get it, they'll they'll
(27:20):
do it. If not that he's been the team. Next, Okay, uh,
do you have another radio hit? Hang for like five? Ye?
All right? Cool, Let's bring in Dan Buyer and um
um uh damn what he got? What are you working on? Well, guys,
we can follow up from our conversation on Alex Smith
because he was talking with Dan Patrick earlier today commented
(27:42):
on his future, and let's hear from the Chiefs quarterback.
I love where I'm at right. I felt like we underachieved.
I felt like we as offensively last year, did some
you know, awesome things. But but who knows. I've been
playing a long enough. I've been through this before, so
I'm not naive to it. You know, this is a
crazy business. A lot of crazy stuff can happen, so
exactly maybe to what Jeff was saying about the future
of Alex Smith in Kansas City, did say that he
(28:04):
would want to go to a playoff team or a
winner if he did not stay in KC. Patriots quarterback
Tom Brady I love I love it, Jeff. He gone,
he gone, like everybody, I think. I think, I think
he is going to be gone. But I don't think
the Chiefs trade him unless they think they getting value
back for him. I don't. I don't. I don't think
they feedback. You think they You think they get a
first round picked from Cleveland, Cleveland's second first round pick,
(28:26):
but I think that not one or four. But I
think they could get thirty three from the Browns, the
first pick of the second round. I think that's fair.
That's fair. And if that was the offer they do,
it was one year left on his deal or Alex Yeah,
one g one year or maybe two years. Yeah, could
could also hold the tide over depending on what they
do at wanted for if it was Cleveland. He didn't
rule out Cleveland when he spoke with Dan Patrick earlier today.
(28:48):
So that you know it's got nowhere to go it up, right? Uh?
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, you know it's amazing, is he
could you there's no multiplication for you can't say one
ten times any games because ten times zero messes with it.
Patrio's quarterback Tom Brady had this to say today when
he was talking about his injured hand because he was
(29:09):
wearing one glove today when he met with the media.
Of course, that on his injured right hand. He continues
to wear the glove, the glove because, as he puts it,
there's a lot of recovery end quote in the gloves
could be an art under armoors sort of selling thing.
But Tom Brady continuing to wear the one glove on
the right hand at his media session today. Colts quarterback
(29:29):
Andrew Luck reportedly close to throwing again. That's according to
the NFL Network. Will reportedly begin workouts in l a
as he tries to return from shoulder surgery that cost
him all of last season. A couple of other notes.
Titans have named Rams offensive coordinator Matt Laflour as their
offensive coordinator and Wizard's guard John Wall six weeks of
action following surgery on his knee. That is major, major,
(29:50):
major news. Thank you, Dan, as you has conditions in
the field change, so can your insurance needs talk with
the Farmers agent day so you can assess with your policy.
Is game ready by an agent at Farmers dot com?
Are all right? Jeff Schwartz continues to join us. It's
funny so like look in the musical chairs of quarterbacks.
What I wanted to talk to you after you're on,
(30:11):
but you actually you've actually better to to stay with
me on this one. So Alex Smith obviously probably he
and Kirk Cousins potentially implayed, right. Um Cousins, they that
you know he's gonna join us up coming here at
the top of the hour. Everybody thinks transition tag him.
Then they try and get some value for him. Somebody
else trades form gives him a long term contract, and
(30:32):
Denver probably makes sense their different division. I don't know
that for whatever reason, they have never truly appreciated him,
and he has never felt appreciated by them. Right, It
just has not worked. I actually understand the Redskins going like, hey,
we don't want to pay you more money than anybody else.
We think you're a good quarterback. We don't think you're
the greatest quarterback, though that's not generally the way the
game is played, right, No, that that's a fair assessment
(30:54):
of him. I think that he's like twelve twelve best
quarterbacks in the twelve Yeah, but ten to fifteen. But
you have to pay him. That's the way it works.
You have to pay him what the market says. To
pay a franchise quarterback unless you don't want to. And
they've they've been paid and said they've paid two years
of franchise tag, which essentially is the same amount right
already up front. Um, so there's a so so then
you're like, all right, there's Arizona, there's uh Denver, there's Jacksonville,
(31:21):
there's Minnesota. It's gonna I mean, like Minnesota's got three
quale like Teddy Bridgewater. I don't know, Uh Sam Bradford.
I don't think you can expect him to be a
star because he can't stay healthy, can't stay healthy. I
think he's terrific, but he can't stay healthy. And Case Keenum,
I think he'll be overvalue based about what he did,
and somebody will overpay for Case Keena. Okay, So there's
(31:44):
a guy that everybody's missing on and he's starting Sunday.
His name is Nick Foles. And you're sitting there and
you're like, somebody's gonna make a move for Nick Foles.
You know how this business works, Just like Case Keenum
is gonna be overvalue because of how he played with Minnesota.
You can't tell me unless Nick Foles came completely spits
up all over himself in the super Bowl. Look at
what he did in the Divisional round, what he did
(32:05):
in the NFC Championship game, And if he's decent in
the super Bowl, you're like, hey man, this guy has
been pretty good. I could do a lot worse. I
think it comes down to the value. I think there
will be people that call the Eagles to try to
trade for him. The issue is Carson Wentz might not
be healthy to start the season. So if you're the Eagles,
why would you trade him? You have him under contract
for about five and a half million dollars next season.
It's a great value for you. Um. You know, if
(32:27):
someone comes and offers you a first or a second,
you have to do it. But I don't think he's
worth that much. I don't think teams will offer a
first or a second. Um and then otherwise don't trade
him like you have. You might have to play him
four games next year. You might have to play him
eight games. What if? What if on doesn't recover? Like
I don't, I just don't. There's a reason why guys
are starters and what guys are backups? And I think
there's a reason why Folds is now a backup um
(32:48):
and if a team were to trade for him, you
have to have everything else in place. You better have
a good defense, you ever good run game, you can
have always other reasons why, because Foles is not the
guy who's gonna lead you down the field to win
a game in the two that situation. I I generally,
I look, I agree with you. I don't. I don't
think what he lacks though, is in armed talent um
(33:08):
or in size. I kind of think. I think, honestly,
it's a confidence and a fit thing more than anything
like you I see sometimes it's confidences goes and now
it's way up high. And he played spectacular football against
the Vikings, and he could tell his confidence because they
called a flee flicker up SEC didn't have to do that,
and he made the greatest things. I mean, the par
was unbelievable. Um No, he's playing very confidently and and
(33:29):
Doug Peterson gets credit for that because he's designed those
those r pos that he loves, which what with which
is what he did well with Chip Kelly was his
r P O s um So, I I like the
game plan that they designed for him, But like I said,
it has to be I mean I mean Jackson, I
guess it would be a good spot for him. Um,
but I mean Ox with this better Kirk Cuts is
better the generally reason why, but I unders I understand that.
(33:51):
But I'm saying somebody's going to be left without a quarterback, right,
But there's also six guys that could be draft in
the first round at quarterback as well. Yeah, I would agree,
like is Darneau, Rose and out? All those guys. Are
they better for the long term of your program? Then
Folds is yes, what do you do if you're the
Giants with Eli? So they're gonna keep him? Um, I
said all year long, I think he's still something left you.
(34:13):
You have to give him an offensive line. You'm a
run game, Mike. He's very specific on what you have
to do with Eli. He's at a certain point of
his career now, he can still throw, he's got the
arm talent, he's in good shape. But he's not gonna
run everywhere like you have to have a it's a
pocket quarterback system for him. What you can do, Yeah,
you could play our center and they're gonna do that
with Shermer's offense in the West Coast offense. Yeah, Um,
though he could play our center. He did a little
(34:34):
bit that. This year when Sullivan became the o C,
they put him on the center a little bit more.
He can do all that. He's fine with that. I
think what the Giants do it too is I think
actually one through fourth interesting because the Browns, if they
let's say the trade fallix with hypothetically they don't the
draft a quarterback at one, tyke a draft one at four,
they can tree out of one. The Giants don't need
a quarterback per se it to make a trade out
or draft sack On Barkley and drafted guard. And there's
(34:56):
so many options. If you keep Eli, it's a one
or two year thing. Do you think the quarterback in
the second round, third round? Maybe you like Davis Webb.
There's no guarantee that the Giants take the quarterback at
two because I think all these quarterbacks have flaws. They
all have some. Josh Allen can't pleae balls accurately. Josh
Rosen is only home runner or not. You know, Donald
turns the ball over too much. Everyone has their issues.
There's no surefire guy a draft at one or two. Okay,
(35:18):
So knowing what you know by the way of those flaws. Right,
Baker Mayfield, people want to say he's Russell Wilson kind
of has a little case Keenum little little girl is
an air raid guy. A lot of area guys case
Keenum has done well this year, dear Goff done better.
But air raid guys don't play one NFL. No, they don't, Okay, So,
and then you have a Donald who didn't come from
a great offense, but everybody loves him and finds ways
(35:39):
to make plays. And then you have Frozen who looks
the part, but his team never wins and nobody likes him.
And then you have and then you have Josh Allen,
who people want him to be. They want him to
be the best thing ever. I mean, they want him
to be basically what you got in Philadelphia, right. They
want him to be a guy who played in the
Mountain time zone that nobody saw that you know throw,
(36:01):
that has checks a bunch of boxes. It's better as
a pro the college. But but but he's not. He's not. Look,
you can't complete fifty six percent of passes and your
senior year in college or your junior year when your
last year in college and be successful in the NFL
does not look around the NFL. Josh Allen to me
is Jake Walker. They they compare physically, they compare small
though right well he was bigger, he could have that.
(36:21):
Jake Locker was only like six too. But great athlete,
you great athlete. Alan can run. He's got a rocket
of arms, so the Locker, that's good. I think that
the guy who's most ready now is Rosen Um u
c l A. I watched tuny you say football. My
parents went there. I remember his first game against b
y U as a freshman. It was unbelievable. Um, he's
just he's a home run or nothing guy. So and
(36:41):
NFL that I teach him like you can take the
seven year in pass. But U c l a. He
had to score a lot of points. The defense was
bad for all his years there. So I think he's
the most right now. The most upside is probably Darno
or Alan or even Mayfield. I mean, if you can
get him in the right system. I like New Orleans
for Baker Mayfield. Sit sit one or two years, sit
behind him, playing indoors, playing the kind of same system.
(37:03):
Love love. That's a great idea. Jeff Schwartz, who you

That's match dot com slash Doug gag. This is game
(38:14):
time on the Doug gott Leave Show. Let's go to
Dan Buyer, Dan, what game have higher today? The game
that we've got Doug is rank, m ah, rank m
let's rank stuff, top three, top five, whatever you like.
Let's start out with the opponents that the Patriots have
defeated in their five Super Bowl victories. Rank who was
(38:36):
the toughest? Down to who was I guess the easiest
for the Patriots and their five Super Bowl wins? All right,
toughest is Kurt Warner in the Rams that was the
greatest show on tour. He was the NFL MVP. I
believe that year. I'm gonna go with Russell Wilson and
uh and the Seahawks. Obviously, an interception Malcolm Butler, great
play Matt Ryan had was an m v P. But
(38:57):
I also think that I would say Russell Wilson, I
think it's better than Matt Ryan. Sorry, that's just kind
of what I think, Um Donna McNabb I would put forth. Uh,
you know, like, look, he was really successful. He was
a terribly inaccurate quarterback at times who did find ways
to win games with his legs, with his arms, with
any read five s NFC Championship games one Super Bowl. Um,
(39:20):
but I just I felt like he was limited. And
Jake Delans one of the great stories in the history
of football backup in New Orleans, who led the Panthers
to a Super Bowl. But man did the did the
end come to a crashing hall when he had those
five interceptions a few of the years later in a
loss in the playoffs, and then he was never the same.
I go, uh, Kurt Warner is the toughest, to Russell Wilson,
(39:40):
to Matt Ryan, to Don McNabb to Jake Delon. You know.
One of the things that is amazing is the Patriots
haven't been as dominant, even though when over the Eagles
was sloppy the Patriot or the Panthers game excuse me, yeah,
yeah there there haven't hasn't been a dominant Patriots performance
that we've seen in a Super Bowl win. Ranked the
Super Bowl venues that you have visited, of course, he
was stadium getting the first. The actual venue or the city.
(40:04):
We can do venue if you if you want, if
you want to do city, we could do that, but
it will do venue. U. S. Bank Stadium is currently
the nicest stadium in the country. It's unbelievable. I've been
in a tour it. It's amazing. But it's second. That's
because there's been a super Bowl in the Rose Bowl.
The Rose Bowl is the best place. It ain't It
ain't close. They're not gonna have one there ever. Again,
it doesn't matter. It's still the best place. The Rose
Bowl is number one UM venues. Uh for a super Bowl,
(40:28):
Dallas is really good. I don't. I think it lacks personality.
I think it lacks a lot of stuff. But it's
a super Bowl. It doesn't have to have some great
home field advantage. I'll put I'll put the Jerry's World
at three. UM at four. This is tough. Uh. Can
I go Palo Alto? That's no longer? It sounds like
our big stadium Plato was Marino versus Montanamber that one.
(40:51):
I'll go with the Superdome as four. It's not a
great venue, but it's close to Bourbon Street, great food,
good time, seems like a party inside. And five Uh Uh,
Houston is a great venue I'll go with as a venue.
I'll go with Houston at five. Miami obviously a better city,
Houston a better venue that it may also lead to
(41:12):
the venues that we've got throughout the NFL Final Quick one,
John Wall out six weeks. Who are the top three
point guards not in the Eastern Conference with John Wall out? Well,
I gotta take John Wall out because he's not in
all right, Kyrie Irving one, so he'd be at two,
you would say, yeah, John will be at two. Lowry's
not having a great year. I'm not a Billie Eric
(41:34):
Bledsoe guy, but Janice is as much the point guard
as anybody. Uh yeah, and that's again. Kirk Cousins will
join us up coming next live in Minneapolis. This is
the Doug Gotlip Show only available. What Up Doug Godlip Show,

Third hour Jason lock Camp for a CBS NFL insider.
But coming up next D'Angelo Williams, who's joined us every week. Man,
(42:22):
I don't know if he can give us the dumbastinne
that happened in football since there was only one game
as a Pro Bowl and I didn't watch a snap,
not a snap. He did play in two Pro Bowls.
I didn't see either of him. I'm not gonna lie
to I'm not gonna lie to him. Um. Anyway, Deangel
Williams and joined us up coming in fifteen minutes. But uh,
let's have welcome in our our next guest, which is
Kirk Cousins, quarterback Washington Redskins. Kind of have to spend
(42:43):
some time with this and over the next month, month
and a half. Right, he's a guy that's gonna really
shape a bunch of movement in the office season. What
happens with Kirk Cousins before we get to that. Uh,
let's welcome in, Kirk, Thanks so much for taking some time. UM,
I want to ask you, let me just get get
your perspective. How would you characterize your season? You know,
(43:07):
like so many NFL seasons, it's up and down, it's imperfect.
I think I grew as a player, got a lot better,
gained some confidence and um, you know, we face some
adversity with some injuries and it was imperfect, but uh
you don't think it took another step forward as a
player and now just have to, uh, you know, find
a way to turn into more wins and hopefully playoff
berth and playoff wins. There's been lots of comments, and
I think it's because one Jay Gruden. Um, I think
(43:31):
he's good in the press conference. He does make some
point of comments, but too because sometimes even before you
the Redskins have managed to step on their toes with
things that are said that people blow what's said after
games or after season out of proportion. How do you
take it when I'll give you an example, Gruden said
after the season at a press conference, Hey, it's hard
when a team seven and nine, it's hard to say
(43:53):
anybody's outstanding, even our quarterback. When you hear that, when
you hear some of the critique of your play at
a as a at a press conference, how do you
take it? Well, you know, people aren't tied with their opinions,
and I've always tried to do my best to ignore
the noise and not not let it get to me.
Certainly take coaching and and and uh, you know, make
sure you use it to become a better player, not
(44:13):
take it personally. Um, but I understand what he's saying.
But the implication is that you know seven and nine
and the quarterback player the exact same thing. And I
think it's slightly more complicated than that in terms of
what takes that to have a record. Even if we
had gone thirteen and three, it's not all my you know,
responsibility to go thirty and three, where it's it's all Kirk.
You know, that wouldn't have happened either. So you know,
it's a team game. He knows that, and uh, I
(44:35):
think that's where you know them the comment. I think
it's slightly more complicated than that. Okay, so so so
help me out, Um, how should we read your guy's
relationship right? Because some of this feels like like, man,
should he be telling Kirk this stuff like in the
t in the meetings and then he's telling us and
you know, on the other hand, like for us in
the meetia, we're like, this is awesome, but he's telling
(44:56):
us all this stuff, So like, how how should we
be when we hear it? Should we be like, man,
Kirk doesn't like that? Or is it like what is
it like to me? You know, I've I've learned not
to take things too personally. I mean, I've you know,
I've heard our our team called me Kurt instead of Kirk.
You know, I just did. Let roll it off my back,
you know, and just all right, you know, but nobody like, look, dude,
(45:17):
your name is Kirk Cousins and we had we had
a ton of fun with it. Okay, but you know, like, look,
my last name is Gottlieb. It's a lot harder to
pronounce than Kirk is. But still when people constantly butcher,
especially somebody who signs your check and he says it
over over again, like come on, you can't tell me
that is that? Like, come on, dude, you gotta know
my name. Yeah, no, they know my name, but uh,
(45:39):
you know, it's it is what it is. I'm fine,
I'm I'm good there. There's certainly you know, I've communicated
their belief in me, and they've shown that in the
way they've they've compensated me and the way they've allowed
me to play for him. So I got no complaints.
I'm in a good place, and uh, I'm focused on
the future and moving forward, and I think there's a
lot to be excited about. Said, okay, there's the transition tag.
You know, the trans you know all these tags, right,
there's a transition tag, which means they can tag again,
(46:00):
which I guess sucks. But on the other hand, like dude,
twenty plus million dollars third straight year, I'm not gonna
but it allows them to search the market. Is that
your sense of what's next for you? Do you tell me? Man?
I have no idea what's gonna happen. I really don't know.
I think any any move you make is justifiable for
a reason. And uh, you know it's my job not
to try to figure it out or worry about something
(46:21):
I can't control. I'm gonna enjoy the month of February,
just relax it back and then let them make their
decision early March and then react accordingly. So I'm gonna,
as I've played in the past, just continue to be
a little passive and just let them make their decision
then and then go from there. All right, A couple
of ties to you playing in this game. Uh, you've
seen the Eagles twice. Um, obviously, I mean they're a
different team now with with Nick Another tie to you,
(46:43):
obviously a Michigan State guy at one point in time
in his career before he left for Arizona. Let's start
with the Eagles. What about their defense makes it so
tough to play against. Yeah, I remember the offensive linemen
on our team commenting that, you know, they have so
many defensive linemen that they rotate them in and so
right when you're on like a let's say here on
a twelve play drive and you're in place six, and
(47:03):
it was Chris Long going against the right tackle, and
then he rotates out, and Barnett comes in, and then
he rotates out, and Vinny Curry comes in, and you
get these fresh pass rushers every time, and al right,
tackle Morgan Moses going every play, and so he had
to go against a fresh pass rusher so many different
times because they kept rotating guys in and out. And
they've invested so much on their defensive line, and I
think that it showed, uh that that really set them apart.
(47:24):
And I didn't mention Fletcher Cox and what he can
do inside. So they got a really good defensive line.
They're well coached with with coach Schwartz, and I think
that that was the starting point for them, you know,
being to be a super Bowl caliber team. Fools we
mentioned started obviously Michigan State before making his way to Arizona.
But being a guy who UH was a backup, then
a starter, and then a backup now starter as well.
I thought, just in watching like there's a guy who
(47:46):
rediscovered his confidence right like like it. It felt like
when he was first operating, the offense wasn't his offense
didn't feel um you so you saw the same thing.
I think so. I think when his first goal around
in Philadelphia with coach Read and Doug Peterson, when they
were both there, I think he had a really positive experience,
love their coaching. Then coach Kelly came in. He had
a good year with coach Kelly. But then coach Kelly
went with Bradford in a different direction, and so Nick
(48:07):
Dan goes out to l A and that ends up
back in Kansas City with coach Peterson and coach Read,
and I think again had a positive experience, and then
went with coach Peterson to to Philly. And it just
seems to be to me that, uh, you know, that's
been a good fit for him. He likes working with
those guys. It's been a good offense for him. He
believes in what they're building and what they do and
knows it well. After all these years working with coach Peterson,
and I think he has a lot of confidence, and
he's played in this league. He knows what he's doing
(48:28):
and he's been around the block. But but for people
who don't understand and like you're look, you're a smart,
confident person, but how do you how important is that
to the job? How important is that to the job?
Not not only confidence, but momentum. You know, you see
these teams that get momentum and then the next thing
you know, they're playing way more, way better than people expected,
and vice versa two. Sometimes some teams that were thought
to be really, really good, they can't seem to get
(48:49):
it going and then they kind of spiral downward out
of control. So there's no doubt that momentum and confidence
a big part of this game. And I think Nick
and the team, the whole Eagles team has kind of
found that this year as they went, people have made
the comparison to you and Brady obviously Michigan and Michigan
State guys draft underdraft, underdrafted guys that have worked their
way into starting spots in the league. I actually asked
you this last year. I'm sure you've forgotten because you
(49:11):
do a hundred of these interviews, but when you see Brady,
all of us at home there downtown, You're like, dude,
he's winning this game. He's winning this game. He just
finds a way to win this game. But quarterback to quarterback,
when you see him, what impresses you? What do you learn?
What you take from him? Yeah, it's the ability to
just continue to play at a high level year in
and year out, and man do yeah, you know, I
think it's the way he takes care of his body.
(49:32):
I think it's great coaching. I think it's you know,
he's a great leader, so he elevates to play those
around him. He makes the other ten guys in the
huddle play at a different level because he's in there
and not somebody else. Um. Great feel in the pocket,
very accurate. Um, great decision maker, sees the feel well,
knows how to avoid pressure even though he's not mobile.
He doesn't take a lot of sacks. I mean all
those things. That's the crazy part though, right like that,
(49:53):
we're we're you're in a league now where you have
to have some mobility at quarterback. Yet he's not. But
how does it he has like pocket mobility? Yeah, you know,
he's not fast. You gotta be able to feel the
rush sense to rush had that sixth sense, and then
you house have to be able to get rid of
the ball quickly and process quickly. And so you know,
as lineman will say to me, as we if we
go into a game where they know they're gonna have
their handsful, they say, Kirk, treat the football like a
hot potato today, you know. And I think the good
(50:14):
quarterbacks you're able to do that. They're able to process
quickly and get it to their check down or get
it to the right guy without taking five seconds to
do it, and it gets pressure off their old line
and it nullifies a good pass rush. And Tom does
that well. But uh, you know, Tom has a lot
of experience through the years that he's built up and
that he's really relied on that and I think it
help serves him well. Um, obviously our Michigan State alum,
a proud spartan, you know about what first when or
(50:36):
first has been reported went on with with Larry Nasser.
I want to ask you about discussion now about Mark
D'Antonio football program, basketball program. Tom zoh uh as as
a spartan, what's your reaction to this latest news? Yeah,
you know, I'm still trying to gather what the facts
are pertaining to what really happens. So it's hard to
you know, have an opinion or pass the judgment when
I don't really even understand still what took place, what
(50:59):
was supposed to take place, what the proper protocol was.
I don't know. I don't know what protocol is supposed
to be followed. Um I know that, you know, what
happened with the gymnastic program is a little bit of
a different incident, and that, you know, I applauded the
fact that those women came forward and shared their story,
And um, I know the university going forward is committed
to implementing, you know, positive changes to ensure a better
(51:19):
environment for students and for athletes. But uh, my experience
with coached Antonio was really all I can speak from,
and mine was one of coached Antonio, coach ' Antonio
operating with high integrity. He did no tolerance for shenanigans,
and uh, you know, I think he did what you know,
I think when he tried to do what he was
supposed to do or what he thought was the right
thing to do at the time, which was to pass
it on to people whose job is to handle that.
And uh, you know, coach Antonio has two daughters who
(51:41):
and a lot of this stuff happened were college age daughter.
I mean, he has a lot in this at stake
here to make sure things are handled properly. And uh,
my experience with him has always been that he would
he would do that on equivocally. One last thing on
the contract, how do you want how do you want
people fans, whether it's Redskin fans or fans of other teams,
how should they perceive Kirk Cousins as of right now?
(52:01):
Are you free agent quarterback? Are you Redskin quarterback? When
we when we talk Kirk Cousins, how should we talk
about you? Well, I'm under contract with the Redskins until
I believe March six, they gotta make a decision on
what they're gonna do. So until then, you know, I'm
with the Redskins, and uh and the balls in their
court to make a decision on March six what they
want to do, and then I'll react accordingly. And uh,
at that point, based on their decision, you know, check
(52:21):
back with me and I'll let you know. But uh,
until then, you know, I'm with the Redskins and and
we'll see what they want to do. All right. Verizon
has a rewards program called Verizon Up and you get
these once in a lifetime experiences. Uh these are pretty
These are pretty dope, right, Like they can v I
P access to a justin Timberlake consert. Now do you
get is that part of the deal here where you
you're like, hey, look I'll do the Verizon thing, but
(52:43):
I get to hang with j right exactly. Yeah, This
Rising Up Loyalty program is a new program they're offering
all their customers. You can, you know, become a part
of it just by going to the My Verizon app. Um.
But they got this Rising Up Lounge all week long
in downtown Minneapolis where they're allowing their customers, anybody who's
a member of the Rising Up Loyalty program to be
a part of these events. You know, they can be
there to charge their phones, have v I P viewing
(53:04):
for the concerts, and meet with NFL players. I'll be
there later this afternoon and um. So it's a really
cool program. And uh, they want to get all their
customers on board and then obviously bring up over customers
of other competitors, bring them over and and become a
Verizon customer and join the loyalty program and uh discover
why you know Verizon is the uh is the best
network going and you go to Verizon dot com to
learn more about the Verizon Upperwards program until March or
(53:27):
maybe until uh the end of time. He has the
quarterback of the Washington Redskins. Stay tuned, Kirk, great stuff.
They catch up with Kirk Cousins for now. The quarterback
of the Washington Redskins. He needed uh um uh coming
like D'Angelo Williams will join us up coming. Next, we'll
get the two time Pro Bowlers thoughts on Dave gentleman
(53:48):
guy who he played for was his GM in Carolina?
What what hit? What d'angelo's expectations are for the Giants
to do if what he did in Carolina is in
any way a factor playing in Plus, we'll get his
thoughts on the super Bowl and like does he view
Tom Brady the way that everybody else seems to view
Tom Brady? We'll get this former star running backs. Look
(54:09):
he joins us every week on the show. That's next.

people paid for the car you want. You can recognize
a good price when you're ready to buy a new

(55:34):
confident car buying experience. Here's a weird breaking news for you.
Film critic Richard Roper suspended indefinitely by the Chicago Sun
Times for buying fake Twitter followers. That's the thing you
can get suspended for that. I mean, I've never bought
Twitter followers. I know people who have. If you guys
read the New York Times article over the weekend which
(55:56):
had outed people for buying fake Twitter followers. But that's
a weird thing to get. D'Angelo Williams joins us on
the shows he does every week. The former Pro Bowl
running back led the league and rushing. Did you buy
Twitter Twitter followers? Is that? What? You know? How is
that illegal? There's nothing illegal about buying Twitter. They're not
fake Twitter followers like they're They obviously follow somebody. They
just directed to his page. So how is that illegal? Um,
(56:20):
it's not illegal. He's not being arrested for it. He's
being Uh, he's suspended and definitely by the Chicago Sun Times,
right because he's perpetuating a fraud, as if you know
the reason, like he blasts out his his film critic
pieces to however, many followers, Um, it's uh, you know,
like I don't even know how much. I don't even
don't know. I guess not a it's it's a bad
(56:42):
look for a business, right like if Like in my business,
like I have two hundred was at forties six thousand
or so Twitter followers like if? But so when we
post stuff out like if I if part of why
I made what I made was based upon number of
my Twitter followers, which some people have. Right, Um, I
(57:02):
think I could lose a job or be suspended for
a job. You're not gonna be fired, You're not gonna
be arrested for it. That would be illegal. It's not illegal.
It's immoral, I guess, is what they're saying. Okay, when
you first said that on the Breaking Moves, how many
did you have? Richard Roper has he didn't buy a lot.
He got suspended for that, like I thought we were
(57:23):
talking about because it's because he got caught. I guess
it's because he got caught. Uh Diangel Williams joins us
he's getting ready to hunt in the Serengetti. Do you
look a lot of guys that come out to Minnesota
and they're like, it's winter, I want to go ice fishing, okay,
And can I give you my thoughts on ice fishing okay,
because I've talked about this in a bunch of stations
(57:43):
I've been on. I want to go ice fishing, but
I know I'm I would, I would, I would regret it.
And here's why I want to go, because I want
to check it off the box. I want to say, like, yep,
when I did they dug a hole, I put a
line in, I pulled the fish out. That's what I
want to do. The problem is, um somebody like if
I say it right now or tweet it right now,
(58:03):
there'll be some people here are so freaking nice. It's
almost it's almost uncomfortable, right, like why are you being
so nice? They're just super super nice. That's how the
Midwest is. So they're like, look, Godly, meet you, don't
you know. I'll meet you outside your car, outside your
the mouth of America. I'll pick you up. We'll go
ice fishing afterwards on my on my Grandpappy's farm. Alright,
so we'll we'll go up and we'll go so it's
(58:24):
super cold. I don't like cold, Like I don't know
anybody goes man, I can't wait till it gets below freezing.
That's when it gets awesome, right, So I'll go out
there and I know there'll be a bunch of beer
to drink, which the first one will go down good,
but after that it gets to where I can't I'm
not a heavy bigger frost. Yeah, And then like then
you're just kind of sitting out there and once you
like put your line in the water and you if
you put lucky out to pull fish out, you're like,
(58:44):
I'm good, I've done it. Check the box. I'm gone
even a box to check because it's kind of a thing. Right,
when else in your life are you gonna go sit
on top of ice and drink a beer and you're
supposed to tell stories and go ice fishing. Dude, I
am trying my best to stop laughing and like give
myself together. You're gonna go hunt buffalo. And that's not
(59:05):
why I'm laughing, bro. When you said that the people
here in the Midwest is so nice. The people from Minnesota.
All I could think of was those Philadelphia Eagle fans
harold batteries at him, and they were just dodging them,
and nobody got mad that they were getting. Right, I
get with a battery, somebody's gonna die. Right, They're like, oh, sorry,
(59:25):
I didn't need to come into your stadium. Thanks for
the battery. I'll have to use that here in my Uh.
Nobody retaliated. So that's a great that's a great. That's
a great thing that you can say about Minnesotaan's is
that they they just they just take what you give them, man,
and they just kind of roll with you. Played for
Dave Gettleman. He wasn't your coach, but he's your jail
manager you're in Carolina. It didn't end well in Carolina
(59:48):
because he didn't want to give a couple of the
old heads, uh one last contract. Right. That was that
that That wasn't what it was. That wasn't the issue.
It was. It was the way he handled things. And
I did a the good job of explaining it earlier.
So I'll try to my best to explain it right now.
I don't know how much time that we have. So
this was the thing. We wasn't Dave Gettleman guys, myself,
(01:00:10):
Steve Smith, Josh Norman, all the older guys that he
got rid of, also coaches. I mean he was old
enough to wear he didn't. I mean he had enough
cloud to wear. But didn't Getleman draft him. No, get
him in the draft him, really get him in the
draft him. But you know it's cool this. I think
it's his seventh year. Uh, Gettleman's fourth or fifth with Carolina. Yeah,
(01:00:33):
he was before that. But we wasn't Gettleman guys, because
our guy was Marty Herney. Marty Horney was our guy. Uh,
what's going on? So Marty Horney was our guy, and
Marty we had the relationship with him. Everybody downstairs in
that locker room, the coaches and the players will family.
Everybody upstairs it's all business. They don't. They don't come
(01:00:53):
down and develop relationships unless you have that GM, the
drafted you come down because you're his guy, understand. So
when Dave came in, we wasn't Dave guys. So Dave
thing was this is business. This is business. This is business.
So as a business when he called you upstairs, he
didn't matter that it didn't matter to him that I
played nine years. You know what he said, Hey man,
we don't need you anymore. Your cut. That's exactly how
(01:01:16):
the conversation with man that was. That's pretty much the conversation.
That's the synopsis of the conversation. I know. That's how
you take the conversation. Has any more grace, Appreciate your time.
It's a business. I understand the business, but you're still
a human being being you. Is that what you think.
I'm not saying what I think. I want to know
you were in the telling you. I'm telling you the
(01:01:37):
synopsis of the conversation. Give me the give me the
what he said? What he said? This is what he
said when I walked in. So first of all, it's
him and his coach of a. Right. I come in.
I'm like hey, coach. He was like hey, And I'm like,
you know, normally me and coach of air we have,
you know, a lot of conversations. So I sit down
and I was like, uh, like, I said, what the
hell going on? What what are we in here? Did
(01:01:59):
you have a spike in your track? No? I didn't know.
I did not. My contract was for two million dollars,
exactly what it was gonna cost in Pitchburg what they
gave me two million dollars. And uh he said, uh, hey, man,
you know, do you know why you're here? I said no,
I just said, what the hell going on? I don't
I don't know why I'm here. He was like, well, man,
we gotta let you go. I said, wait what He said, yeah, man,
(01:02:23):
we gotta let you go. Like let me go, like
you didn't let me go out of the room, and
like let me go, Like yeah, yeah, man, we just
it's not enough. Football is here for you and your
contracts too expensive. I got up, I shook his hand
and I left. It's cold blooded man. So that and
then and then it was no, they tack Steve. Yeah,
(01:02:48):
but listen, listen, Steve has a well reputation, Like who
wasn't he beat up in practice? And I'm just singing.
David get him was like, yo, Steve, can he and
and Rivera wouldn't get in the way. It has nothing
to do with it has nothing to do with that, Doug.
(01:03:08):
There's a lot of so. So, okay, so here's the question.
He goes into New York. Yes, the obvious thing is Hey, nobody,
nobody who's there is safe because they're not his guy.
That's bullcrap because he was there before he started. So
Eli man and all those older guys, he know, he
the drafted him and had his hand into that. So
everybody's talking about Eli man is not gonna be there
next year. I call bull crap on that because he
(01:03:30):
was one of Dave get Himan his guys. Okay, So
but here's I guess. Here's my question. Is is it
smart to rebuild around Eli Manning like he's Is he
so washed that you can't I'm telling you right now
if I'm if New York want to know what I think.
If they get him, he's your problem now, That's what
I'm telling him, because they went three and thirteen and
(01:03:51):
it's not hard for him to come in and they
go a Nate and everybody just like, man he just
rebuild our program. They went three and thirteen, Doug, like,
if I also didn't have a com junior, anybody, you're
gonna be better back. You still got Eli Manning, you
still got a horrible offensive. Still like it's not gonna fix.
You can't put a band aid on a bullet wound.
I understand. So you I put you in charge. I
(01:04:13):
put you in charge. You got the second pick in
the draft. I'm taking an offensive linemen. You can't take
an offensive lineman too, not in a quarterback. You could
trade down and get an offensive lineman. What I'm taking
an offensive linemen. There isn't anybody that we would you. Okay,
so you're keeping elie. You're taking an offensive line. Yes,
you have se Quon Barkleys, an elite running back. The
running backs not the issue. The offensive line is, yeah,
but do they have a running back if they had
(01:04:34):
a good offensive line. It does not matter. If you
do not have a good offensive line, it does not
matter what running back you put back there, you're gonna
have issues still, you're not gonna be able to move
for And look, I agree with you, and you look
if you look at these two teams, they rebuilt their
offensive lines. You look at the teams who have done
well early in the season, middle of the season, and
the season there the Raiders offensive line didn't fit their
(01:04:57):
their scheme. But when they finally got the house last year,
it was the rebuild offensive line that did so. But
the problem with it is, here's what a Giants fan
will tell you, hey, man, we're the Giants. We're never
gonna draft in the top five again. This is our
shot to get a quarterback. It's a quarterback draft. Do
you and if you you know, do you take that
as a Okay? I understand we need an offensive line,
but let's take a quarterback because we're gonna ultimately need
(01:05:20):
a quarterback to rebuild this thing the right way. Now,
now let's throw I'm throwing all caution to the win here.
It's probably you're probably gonna crainge you when I say this,
but we're gonna go with tenure. Okay. Um Tom Brady
in New England, his greatest threat was Jimmy Garoppolo. What
happened to him? Got traded? Okay, So why would you
bring in a guy with Eli They benched Eli Mann
(01:05:43):
in last year, Bro and it was an uproar. They
benched him. Oh, I understand. Look, you you're talking about
New York. I trade him, trade him Week seven, Week five,
you should trade him to Jacksonville. Jackson obviously not a
New York Giants fan or live in New York. I
actually did live in New York and my at my
late father and my son are giants fans like I'm
just telling you the they wanted to be like everybody
(01:06:05):
wanted to be like gone, but the owner. Why did
they get upset when he got benched? The only people
that got upset with the fans, and they overreacted to
the fans. All right, let's get let's get to Brady. Um.
When you see Brady as a guy who has played
with some of the best in the game. You play
with Big Ben? Uh? You played? You play with Cam?
(01:06:25):
Do you play you play something too? Right? Yeah? I
played with Jake. You played with the good Jake and
then the post playoff Jake that was never the same.
I played with Jake. Okay, I played with Sake. What
what when you see Brady? What do you what do
you say? Uh? Somebody has been doing it for a
very long time. You know. He kind of put me
in the mindset of Peyton Manning. You always gonna compare
(01:06:47):
guys to guys that have done it and gotten out.
You know. Payton Manning didn't end on a high note.
He did win the Super Bowl, but from a statistic
statistical standpoint, it wasn't high at all. He touchdowns, hav't
seen the interception since last year. Absolutely, you know any
other quarterback that would have did that would have been
sitting on the bench. He was actually they actually remember
the bench like, okay, broadcast weathers so bad, we would
(01:07:11):
rather take a washing up Peyton Manning, and he lifted
when the defense carried them to Absolutely, it was it
was a perfect storm. It was the it was the
Baltimore Ravens. So okay. But do you think is is
he as good? People are saying he's the greatest ever
you actually played? You know, it's it's it's it's all generational. Man,
(01:07:32):
Uh what about this general Like I've made the argument,
I know he's accomplished more. I would rather have Aaron
Rodgers on Sunday then, And I'm not trying to take
away from the dudes clutch. He's been phenomenal and doing
it at forty is incredible. And there wasn't a second
in that game on Sunday week Go Sunday. We talked
about this last week that I thought they were gonna lose.
(01:07:52):
That said, I would still rather have Rodgers because I
think he does everything Brady does, just does it a
little bit better in some ways. You know, movement out
of the pocket maybe a little bit stronger. Arm. I
just think he plays for an inferior franchise in terms
of coaching and overall talent. So you're you're telling me
that we're talking about where Tom Brady is right now,
not what Tom Brady has been. Right we're talking about
the older Tom, but we're not talking about Tom brady career. Wait.
(01:08:15):
I'm just trying to make sure I get a better
understanding because he's had anger, he's had a better career
Tom Brady. Yes, yes, I would say Rodgers peaker. I
would take Peak aeron Rodgers had a peaked Tom Brady.
I'm just saying that, that's my opinion. But I'm you're
what franchise are you running? What do you mean? What
franchise are you any franchise? I think he's a better quarterback.
(01:08:36):
You don't you? For you a second ago, you agreed,
Now you disagree? No, no, no no, because I thought you
were talking about Brady. Thought I didn't know you was
talking about Peak and Pete. Yes, I'm uh, you disagree.
I can't you're saying this. I can see the conviction,
like you're not pulling my leg and you're serious? Yeah,
(01:08:56):
what is wrong with you because I think Aaron Rodgers
plays the how much did not get a lot of sleep.
That's what's going on exactly. But I have going on.
I have health for him to this belief that is
what's health is in question. We're gonna have to make
sure we check you out and make sure you're okay.
I know we don't have concussion protocol here, but what
we're gonna do is we're gonna check you for dehydration, uh,
(01:09:17):
for hallucina, hallucinations and possibly just saying just deranged stuff.
Who wins the Super Bowl? Uh, Now that's a tough
one because Philly has the defense. It depends on which
Nick Foles I get? Am I getting the NFC Championship
nick Foles or the Nick Foles in the regular season?
Is it is his thing? Confidence? Is it? He has
to find the right system that fits. What is it?
(01:09:38):
Because if you watched him this the second week he
started the last at the end of the regular season,
he was terrible. Terry look lost. He looks like he
was driving somebody else's He would look like he's driving
something or you know what, you look like. He looked
like you were going to somebody's house and tried to
turn on their TV and like use their stereo system, Like, damn,
I don't know what any of these buttons. I have
no idea. I have a universal remone my house and
(01:10:00):
this doesn't work. And now then last week he looked
totally comfortable throwing the ball deep down the field. So
what what is it with him? I have no idea.
I don't know if his nerves because he came out
in that division around and I was like, dude, phil
is not gonna make it. This is They're They're gonna
get carried by their defense. I'm thinking again, you know,
I always go back to Baltimore trend deal for two
(01:10:20):
thousand and three. I'm like, this is what's going to happen.
And then he steps up in the NFC Championship game
and I'm just like, what the hell? Like the difference
of week make So, if if we get the NFC
Championship Nick Foles, this game may not even be close.
Philadelphia or Eus run off with it. However, if we
get the regular season Nick Foles, it's gonna go the
(01:10:41):
other way. It's gonna go the other way fast because
Philly has the defense to play. They have the upfront four.
They It reminds me of that New York John's defense
when they played it when they were undefeated, when they
had Randy Moss and nobody gave them a chance. Whereas
everybody's kinda like they won't Philadelphia win because they're tied
to Tom Brady winning, or they won't tell on Brady
to win because they want to solidify that he's the
(01:11:02):
greatest of all time ever statistically super Bowl MVPs, they
want to like put that stamp of approval on Tom
Brady doing it at forty. That's D'Angelo Williams. He joined
us every week. We'll he'll he'll join us next week
and tell us who had the stupidest uh, the stupidest
play and who did the stupidest decision in the Super Bowl.
I got one for this week. What do you got?
The stupidest decision of the week was the godly picking
(01:11:25):
Aaron Rodgers in his peak over Tom Brady and his peak.
That's what the stupidest decision standby the week. The numbers
support me, the armstrang supports me, the foot movement supports me,
but they don't support you. The only status Tom Brady
did have an undefeated regular season, which Aaron Rodgers did
not uh did not have as conditions on the field chain.
(01:11:45):
So can your insurance you needs talk with the Farmers
age today so you can assess whether your policy is
game ready. Find a net Farmers dot com. Let's bring
in Dan Buyer. Dan, do you want to do you
want to get in on the peak Aaron Rodgers here
is he's a Seahawk fan fan, but you're you're born
in Wisconsin. I've seen both at the what I feel
(01:12:07):
is the top of their game. I have to say
Dougs point about Rogers mobility I think could put him
over the top. Serious. We got an Aaron Rodgers sandwich
here with Tom Brady in the middle. Peak Aaron Rodgers.
It was forty five and six, forty five and six.
(01:12:27):
Um and uh their their team record was fourteen and
one that year. That was in two thousand and eleven. Right,
he didn't play the last week of the season. That
was when Matt Flynn and Matt Finn for like six
touchdown passes or something against Detroit. And that's how he
got it, That's how he got a contract in Seattle
and ultimately got beat out. Now uh, um uh, what
(01:12:47):
we saying Tom Brady, had you forgot? You forgot who
we will? No, No, I'm just I'm trying to I'm
trying to look at his stats on this is crazy,
Tom Brady peaked Tom Brady. Let's look at like twenty
eight year old Tom Brady. Right, No, we're talking about
when he had Randy Moss from Randy Moss had, by
the way, should be pointing out he had Randy Moss,
who's arguably the best wide receiver, and Jody Nelson is
(01:13:08):
not a good rod receiver. He's not Randy Moss. Hold on, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait,
help who you work with? You can't help when you
work that's office. I understand. But you just compared. You
just compared Jordy Nelson to Randy Moss. And by the way,
in two thousand eleven, he didn't have Jordy Nelson. Uh
who did he have? I'll go back and look at
you like, but but but Jordy Nelson, Randy Moss, Well,
Jordy Nelson in the Hall of Jordison. You're trying to argument,
(01:13:31):
trying to say you actually it was Jennings. It was
more Greg Jennings, Greg Jennings. Yeah, Greg Jennings and Randy Moss.
I love Greg Jennings, Okay, at thirty year old thirty
year old Tom Brady, he threw for forty eight hundred yards,
which is a hundred yards less. It's about the same.
But he played in all sixteen games, as opposed that
Rogers only playing in fifteen fifty touchdowns, eight interceptions, led
(01:13:54):
the league and everything else, just like Rogers led the
league in any of the else. This is just a
taste thing. This is like hoakin pepsi. It's not are
you guys, I'm neither, but I'm letting you know right
when you used to and has nothing to do with
tatorade or has you know how many comeback wins. We'll
just solve this one. Comeback wins. Come back wins, Yeah,
(01:14:14):
because I don't think Aaron Rodgers ever had three. Like
there's a shirt he actually was done to the Falcons
last year and they lost, actually and that's the way
that du No, I'm just kidding. Tom Brady did show
up at his press availability today wearing one glove, saying
(01:14:36):
that there's a lot of recovery in that gloves. Will
see if sales of those under armored gloves go up
over the next. This glove. You must protect this glove.
The Colts trying to protect Andrew Luke shoulders well. Reports
say that he is going to begin throwing with doctors
and trainers in Los Angeles. Luck missed the entire season
because of the shoulder. I get back to l A,
(01:14:56):
I'm going I'm so mad at that. I'm so mad
at that. Like Andrew Luk's the only guy that I
know that makes eighty five million dollars and get a
pass on missing an entire season. It's best thing that
happened to that franchise. Man. They're gonna draft good. He's
gonna be all fresh rested. If he played, they win
a couple of games. Now they didn't win hardly any
he's been hurt for three years now than you do
(01:15:16):
is unreal, Doug, Are you just you just trying to play?
Tanking works? They tank, new GM coach, It works. I've
got two notes for you. One on the NFL. Blake
Bortles underwent risk surgery. Why is this important? Well, his
contract is only guaranteed for injury. So the Jaguars last
(01:15:38):
spring picked up his option if they wanted to move
on from Blake Bortles. They could just release him with
no penalty, but now he had risk surgery, so if
they needed to release him by March, it would be
on the books. I don't know if that's how it works, though.
I read to where the injury has to be so
severe he can't play, and this one was done. He
was playing with the injury. Why are we even talking
about that. Let's just talk about the play like board,
(01:16:00):
because because because you can't like what he's saying is
you can't cut they cut him now. If the was
gonna cut him, they messaged the ANC Championship game. Dude,
I know a lot of quarterbacks. It's on big contracts
that stink. I understand that they better than Blake Portles.
They got the ball fifty three seconds ago in the
first half, they got a full boat of time outs,
they got the lead, they decided to take the knee twice.
(01:16:23):
I'm not telling you that I have no confidence in
Blake Bortles. They're telling you they had no confidence in Blake. Well,
it seems like they're stuck with him for another year. Yeah,
that's what I got. Another Blake news. No Blake Griffin
for the Pistons tonight, couldn't be held out, could make
his Detroit debut Thursday. Yeah, yeah, yeah, not gonna trying
(01:16:43):
to finalize why everybody's got Piste off that they just
out of nowhere just trade Blake Griffin. But if Blake
Griffin wanted to leave, then it's an issue. He could
have left. No no, no, no, no no, that's what
I'm saying. That's what I'm saying. So if he wanted
to leave, the fans would have been attacking Blake Griffin like,
oh man, there's now there's no loyalty, there's no you
out of all people know, Like when Lebron James he
(01:17:05):
left and it was there's no loyalty, there's no lawalty.
But yet if he got traded, it's it's it's a
little different Lebron different. Different he's from is different Cleveland.
Oh my god, I don't have problem with Lebron leaving
to go to my We're not talking about alright, we're
(01:17:25):
cutting 'angelo is Mike. He has owned this show enough.
Dan Buyer as well, Uh what if you get up

but tax Slayer, well, you can't introducing refund now only

for you a portion of something you may have heard
earlier on Fox Sports Radio. We call it the Fox Say.
(01:18:34):
Former Eagles coach and current Giants coach Spagnola said the
Patriots stole the Eagles play calls when they played against
one another in the Super Bowl. Here's Colin Coward's response, Oh,
I can just hear the Patriot haters. That is cheating.
It's your job to hide the signals. It's not my
job to not take him when you're too stupid to
(01:18:55):
give him to me. Do you think the Patriots cheated? No?
Watch the Tom Brady documentary. He talked about this very
thing two days ago. And even do him something so long,
you just don't see like tape, you see the depth
of everything. How do you know when the guy's gonna blitz?
You know, you kind of look at the shape of
the defense. You know, a guy just may have a
little tell like a poker player. You know, it's like,
(01:19:17):
how do you know? Well, you just I don't even
do him for so long, You've seen so much. I
watched take all day Monday, all day Tuesday, you know, Wednesday,
we practice, Thursday practice, Friday practicing on from women. I
watched film, and Saturday before the game, I watched film,
and then Sunday morning I watched film and the whole
time I'm just trying to get tells. And I could
literally like just watch film all day. It's almost like soothing. Yeah,
(01:19:41):
Cam Newton do that, Ryan Tannehill, Jay Cutler, brock Osweidler,
do they do that? Because Tom does? Football is all
about stealing concepts and signals. I don't know football is
all about stealing con steps and stealing signals. I think
(01:20:01):
it's a little there's a little bit more to it
than that, right, But but that's it concepts and signals Like, No,
that's not actually what it's about. Uh, there's personnel groupings, right, um,
which is all about matchups. There's the difference in do
you try and outflank your opponent much like war, right
you put an extra offensive lineman, or do you try
(01:20:22):
and throw it to a guy in space? Do you
try and create a mismatch by putting a wide receivert
putting a running back out wide being covered by a linebacker.
There's a lot of different concepts to it. There are
a lot of different formation groups, a lot of different
styles or, as the saying goes, ways, the skin of cat.
But here's what I agree with Colin, and I've said
this from the spy Gate, from spy Gate until now.
(01:20:45):
There is a reason that you have multiple signal callers
signaling in a play, and there's a reason that those
signals are have a have a rhythm and a pattern
to them, just like in baseball. The idea of stealing signals.
If you're signals are being stolen, stolen, change your signals,
change the what is it called in baseball? When you
(01:21:06):
have the what's the uh, what's the there's there's something
where the signs all of a sudden become activated. There's
the it's not the tell, it's the what it's the indicator,
you know, is the chin, the indicators, the eye, the indicators,
the the ear, the indicator. Like, there's a reason that
you have three dudes out there and you're not holding
up signs saying, you know, split right, thirty two die right.
(01:21:31):
The reason you don't just yell that out is because
the other and oh yeah, by the way, there's a
reason now that quarterbacks can get those signals in their
ears because people for years, we're stealing signals. If you
don't like the fact that Patriots have stolen signals, change
your signals. That's a U problem, not a Patriots problem.
Their level of preferredness was simply better than yours. I
(01:21:53):
even defend them in terms of filming signals and writing
down the corresponding defenses. You know why, because for years
you've assigned uh pleabs, you know, young impressionable uh employees
of the Patriots or any other team to do the
exact same thing with their eyes. The only thing they
did was they used modern technology of video cameras instead
(01:22:14):
of just videwing the play to videoing the signal as well.
Is that cheating, No, that's understanding the rules and operating
within the gray area of what is legal. And that's
what the fox said. Thank you there, Ramos. Uh. Yeah,
I have this thing about ice fishing, guys. I just
part of me says I want to do it, But
(01:22:36):
then the reality to it is I know that I would.
It would take a long time to get out there.
Some guy named Merle would be driving me in his
truck and I would be nodding, and several of his
stories would be really interesting, and then like twenty minutes away,
I'd be like, God, I want to get the hell
out of here. But and he'd be super excited about it,
and everybody here is very nice, and I get out
there and be like we got cold beer, and we
(01:22:58):
got a place and it's warm and it'll be fun,
like this is great, Like Okay, I'm done, I'm ready
to go back now, Like now we just got here.
We do this for like six hours and then we'll
just throw you in the back of the truck and
we'll take you back to your hotel. Like now, I
want to get back to my hotel room and get
my Jemmy's all right. Uh. Something that you may have
learned or you will learn from last night's Blake Griffin
(01:23:18):
Tray Blake Griffin is a Detroit Piston. Wow. Wow, I
got a great Detroit story for you. And why the NFL.
It's about your quarterback in the NBA. It's about your
star that's next in the Dug Gotlip Show. Fox Sports
Radio Boom, What Up, America. It's the Doug Gottlive Show.
It's live from Radio Row in Minneapolis. Brought to you
(01:23:41):
by Black Rifle Coffee Company. Veteran and veteran roasted visit
Black Rifle copy Coffee dot com. Alright, Uh, Jason lock
him for is gonna join us upcoming in fifteen minutes.
Trying to effort to get Ryan Leaf over here. He's very,
very busy guy, and I want to talk to him
(01:24:02):
about quarterbacks. I want to talk to him obviously about
uh Tom Brady, um, but I also want to talk
to him about the tragedy at Washington State, which took place, uh,
just a little over a week ago, which Tyler Helinski there,
who was going to be their starting quarterback this upcoming season,
committed suicide. Uh. He had a very powerful tweet that
I'll share with you. We're gonna effort to try and
(01:24:23):
get Ryan over here. I know he's super, super busy,
but Jason lack Camphor will join us. Kirk Cousins joined
us last hour. If you missed that interview. If you
missed that interview, we'll bring back a couple of little
snippets of it for you and kind of prove that
what you think is exactly what's going on there based
upon his answers where he didn't say it, but he
(01:24:43):
said it. All right, let's get to the news of
the day, which continues to be Blake Griffin. Lob City
is no more. And you know, look, most of these,
most relationships have a um have a born on date, right, Like, Look,
I'm not big on throwing out things because they've been
(01:25:06):
in the fridge too long. It's just kind of you know,
when you know, my wife is somebody that if he
gets even close to the expiration date, it's gone. She
goes through the fridge, like close enough, expiration date's gone. Like, hey,
that is not a perishable good. You can keep that.
That's fine. But you know, like if you made it,
leftovers last like two days and then she trashes it.
I'm not a big milk drinker. My one of my
(01:25:28):
daughters drinks milk. If it gets anywhere close to expiration date,
it's gone. It's gone. Um. You know the thing about
cheese is when it has mold on it, Like cheese
is mold. Just cut off the mold and you're good
to go. Like that's my philosophy, her not so much.
But I think we all know when relationships and teams
have run their course, right, And so what's happened is
(01:25:50):
really interesting with the l A Clippers. You know, last
year at the end of the season, Chris Paul is like,
I want out. So they traded it and they put
him in a spot you want to go to Houston.
They sent to Houston and they got a pirate's bounty.
Hasn't paid back Ton in return, but they've had a
lot of injuries. Of course Chris Paul has been hurt. Right, Really,
(01:26:13):
the story of Lob City is what could have been
right and I know that people are gonna say, woll
you know they never got out of the second round,
Like that's true. The greatest accomplishment the history of the
l A. Clippers is being the Spurs in a seven
game series in the playoffs, which Chris Paul was incredible.
Now he got hurt in the next series against the
Rockets and they lost to the Rockets, who ultimately lost
(01:26:35):
to the Warriors. And that was That was a team
to which I don't know if they would have beaten
the Warriors, but uh, they could have taken some games
off the Warriors, that's for sure. And the point is
that it's a It was a team to which we're
never going to know. We're just never gonna know they
We will never get a sense of how good the
Clippers um could have been because whether Blake was or
(01:27:00):
Chris Paul was hurt, where J. J. Reddick was hurt,
somebody was always hurt. And the their their margin for
error was more slight than other teams. But like, look,
it's just that, it's it's kind of being snake bitten,
kind of being state bitten. Right when the Warriors won
their first title, everybody they played had an injury everyone,
(01:27:26):
whereas Steph Curry was injured up until they made their
playoff runs, and he's never been injured with the exception
of he got hurt. Was that the second year, right
when he got hurt, and he came back right when
he got hurt, and then he came back against the
Portland Trailblazers, they looked fallible. That's the imagine. If he
was out the entire playoffs, they wouldn't have won, they
(01:27:47):
wouldn't got to the finals that year. But last year
they had Durrant, they had staff, they had Clay, and
they had the entire time the year before when they
lost Draymond got suspended and steff was was banged up.
So as much as you want to say the Clippers underachieved,
the fact is they were never healthy, so we never
really know knew if they were even capable of underachieving
(01:28:10):
or achieving or overachieving whatever, uh, their their chances of
winning a championship. That's the truth. I'm not a Clipper fan,
I'm not a Clipper apologist. That's the damn truth. Almost
no one who loses star starting players wins an NBA championship.
It's what brings down dynasty's and we never allowed the
(01:28:31):
Clipper dynasty to get going. But the born on date
was which you could have tried to keep Chris Paul.
You could have tried to do it again, but it
was like we tried this one way and it just
isn't working. So Chris Paul was out, and now they
had a choice to make. You got Blake Griffin. You
(01:28:52):
already had DeAndre Jordan under contract. You had to let
JJ Reddick go. And remember the reason JJ Reddick had
to go was because the seventies six ers have this
huge about a cash space they want to keep, so
they overpaid to get J. J. Reddick. That's what they did.
By the way, J. J. Reddick is hurt because he's
a former Clipper and so I I understand people going, well,
(01:29:16):
the Clippers, no loyalty or whatever, but like, honestly, what
was Blake's reason for staying. It wasn't because he was
super loyal to the Clippers. Wasn't because of their sale
of Hey, a Clipper for life, like dude. It was
because he's in l A. It's because he got more
money for the Clippers that the contract he has he
only could have received with the l a Clippers and
(01:29:37):
to anyone. And I've seen a lot of my colleagues
who are writers say and say, hey, look, NBA is
gonna change this offseason. All these guys are gonna ask
for no trade clause. And you know what NBA teams
are gonna say, Look at Carmelo Anthony, he had a
no trade clause. Had that work out for the Knicks?
You know, if you want million dollars a year, we're
going to reserve the right to trade you. No trade
(01:29:58):
clauses no Blaine. And it also speaks to the truth
about the NBA, which is there's about teams that this
is the only way in which there ever only two
ways are gonna get a superstar is to draft one
and hope he develops that like Janice, or to trade
for one when he's got a bad contract or a
(01:30:19):
team has decided we're out. And that's what the Clippers
looked in the refrigerator and they're like, we already threw
out the milk, right, and that's in Chris Paul. Now
let's start just cleaning out the refrigerator. And then we're
gonna go to the grocery store this offseason and shop
for new stuff. That's what it is. And for the Pistons,
I thought the Pistons, I mean, you know, look, the
(01:30:39):
idea of a trade is who got the best player,
and the Pistons got the best player of trade. I
like to bias Hair. Its nice player. He Blake Griffin.
You may think Blake Griffin may not be the greatest
power forward ever in the history of the NBA, even
though you thought he was going to be the greatest
power forward in the history of the NBA. Blake Griffin's
a a perennial All Star, very good pastor. He's made
(01:31:00):
himself into a good three point shooter at thirty four
percent of the year shooting six threes a game. He's
still a tremendous dunker. Yeah, he gets hurt a lot.
That's who Blake Griffin is. The NFL is about having
a quarterback. The NBA is about having a star, and
you have to have a start to which can score
give you ten and you're gonna win because of it.
And honestly, Blake is that guy. He's not a superstar,
(01:31:22):
he's not Durant, he's not Lebron, he's not even Staff.
But you can win a lot of games and then
get build the team around him. And that's the only
way if you're the Detroit business, you can get him.
And for the Clippers, that make sense. They just looked
in the refrigerator they opened up. They're like, man, something stinks,
don't know what it is. Let's just start throwing everything out.
(01:31:42):
And Steve Balmer is gonna gonna open up the checkbook
this offseason. They're gonna get rid of D'Angelo. Uh, I mean,
you see me, DeAndre Jordan's. They're gonna get rid of
Lou Williams. Sell high, Lou Williams having the best year
statistically of his career on offense. Sell those two high,
and then they're gonna start all over again. So I mean, like, look,
(01:32:08):
I don't The Pistons had no choice, and honestly, the
Clippers had no choice either. It wasn't the best try
time to trade Blake. That should have been a couple
of years ago, but it's the only time in which
you can get rid of that contract. And quite obviously
(01:32:29):
it seems to make the Clippers a possible destination for
when they get rid of DeAndre Jordan's contract and uh,
Lou Williams contract. Now of a sudden did they become
players for two max contract guys like the Lakers are
gonna be players for two max contract guys? All right?
Coming up next is uh Jason lack Camphora. As conditions

Doug Otlive Show, Fox Sports Radio. He has joined US
all year long. You read his work at CBS sports
(01:35:00):
dot Com. You see him on CBS's coverage of the
National Football League. He's j l C Jason Lack Camphora.
He joins US here on set in the Twin Cities. Um. Look,
I mean the storylines of the game are gonna become
redundant in some point. Yeah. I kind of think the
off the field stuff is really really interesting. Um let's
start in New York with with Eli Manning. I found
(01:35:20):
it fascinating that, uh, you make a higher and Shermer
comes in and he makes it pretty clear Eli Manning
is his quarterback. I know, you can't trust what everybody says,
just what they're saying, it felt like there was some
conviction to it. Do you do you believe that then
becomes uh uh that reality? Yeah, I do. Um, the messaging,
(01:35:41):
the optics, everything about the way they handle that benching
was so bizarre and so sort of beyond the pale
and unnecessary. Right, there was so much like what, I
don't mean, what, what's what's the tennis term? Unforced errors? Right?
It didn't have to be that difficult. So now that
(01:36:01):
they're rebranding and re messaging and reconnecting with this quarterback
and with their fan base. I can't fathom that they're
laying all this groundwork only to say, oh, no, we're
gonna trade him for a sixth round pick, Because I mean,
what are you gonna get for him? You know, no,
you're just gonna cut them. So look, I would try
to move on from him, and I would just go
really young, because I don't think they're particularly close. But
(01:36:22):
I understand them keeping him for another year while they
draft a quarterback and then we see where that goes. Um,
But yeah, I take them at at face value there.
Eli is going to be their guy for another year. Okay,
So does that mean like the argument to drafting a
quarterback is the draft a quarterback they red shirt him
and learned from Eli. Um? That sounds great, okay, but
(01:36:43):
we've seen them trying to pull you once before and
you got Odell Beckham Jr. Right, you could draft to say,
Kwan Barkley. You could fix the offensive line with the
draft and free agency. Do you draft a running back there?
I don't. I don't. I mean, look, I mean unless
this guy is Danny and Tomlinson or you know, Earl
(01:37:03):
Campbell like, no, I'm not. I mean even even a
Zko Elliott, Like, is that pick gonna bear out to
be the best pick when you're talking about that high
and Blue Chippers at other more impactful situations, more, you know,
more impactful positions. I don't see it, Doug. I wouldn't
go that high. They're looking at it like where the
New York Football Giants where a storied organization. We don't
(01:37:26):
think we're gonna be picking this high for a long
long time. If we like any of these quarterbacks, we've
got to go get one now. And we could find
Look where did Kareem Hunt go? I mean, we can
make this case over and over and over find an
impactful running back in the second or third round. The
odds against finding a quarterback there. I mean, Russell Wilson
is a needle in a haystack. Okay, so let's let's
stay in the NFC East. They got a team, uh
(01:37:47):
without their starting quarterback in the Super Bowl, Washington Redskins.
We had Kirk Cousins on earlier and some of his
answers were like pretty you know, without without being telling,
they were telling, right. I asked him about about Jay Gruden.
Some of the things he said in postgame press conferences
and exit interview press conferences, and he you know, and
(01:38:08):
he said, you know, he's ready into it. To his opinion,
I have mine. It wasn't like they were still locked
up there. There's still some sort of it's I mean,
it's the coach and the quarterback or cogs in this machine.
It's it's a financial decision. It's the owner and Bruce Allen,
the team president, and that's it. They control the purse strings,
they control the flow of money. Scott McClellan, the former
(01:38:30):
GM who was not there anymore, he had a template
in place five year or eight million a year, five years,
forty million dollars back when they first made him the starter,
when they were willing to bench r G three. The
owner didn't want to entertain that. Then, before they franchise
Cousins for the first time, Cousins agent calls them and says,
let's do a three year deal in around nineteen a
(01:38:51):
year guarantee the first two years. You'll get him at
this year's franchise tag rate for three more years without
having to do the increases it. Dan Snyder wanted nothing
to do with that, didn't entertain it. Now we're gonna
tag him and let him play it out. So it
just comes down to what they're going to do. Financially.
They're give him forty four million dollars for two years.
If you have transition him at eight, it's a raise,
(01:39:13):
but it's not that out of the realm of what
he was getting already there. And if somebody they're they're
arguing over market value, right, I mean, that's what this
is always about. He's saying, if I was untethered to
you guys, I think I would crush it at this level.
They're like, you wouldn't, so transition him. And if the
Jets step up or the Jags or whomever, and they
structure things in a way that they're forty million dollars
in year one and oh, we just can't touch that,
(01:39:33):
then they can go to their fan base and say, look,
we tried, and we think this is out of the
realm of good, you know, of of what's good for
our organization. So we're letting him go, and maybe nobody does,
or maybe somebody comes up with something that they say,
you know what, that's not that crazy, let's just match it,
or they call that team back and say, look, we
could match this if we want. So, do you want
to work something out off the grid and trade as
(01:39:53):
a couple of picks and then you get him at
your value? Do the Dallas Cowboys rework? Does Bryant steel
or does he play elsewhere? I mean, what I would
do is cut the cord, But Jerry's a little different,
and Jerry's personal relationships with guys, and Jerry really wants
certain things to work. So I don't think it's out
of the roma possibility with that particular franchise and that
(01:40:14):
particular owner, that they kicked the can down the road
for another year and see if they can make this
run next year without the League office conspiring against us,
without Goodell taking our running back away. You know all Oh,
you know how they're They're sitting back there, he and
Steven Jones are saying, well, this is why we lost.
It wasn't because of what we did, is because what
was done upon us. And if we get that whole
offense together, and if Doc has his full plethora of weapons,
(01:40:36):
and if we're more balanced offense, then we think Dez
will be more productive. Jason Lackhampors and CBS Sports joining
us doug Out the show Fox Sports Radio. Um, okay,
let let's work our way to the Denver Broncos, a
team that they've tried to fix the quarterback ging it's
just been unsuccessful. Uh. And you have one of the
all time great quarterbacks who's made the call to draft
(01:40:57):
brock Os. While they drafted two quarterbacks, you have more
um and and now that everybody knows they're in the
market for one, who do they want and they can't
get Alex Smith? Right? Smith, I don't think any Reid
would trade him in the division. I mean, I don't
think any Reid would do that. I know you could
say they did, but different player, declining asset, Alex Smith
(01:41:19):
coming off his best season ever. Andy Reid has total
control of personnel right now. He didn't then in Philadelphia. UM,
I just don't see that happening within the division. I
think short term, I could see a poor man's Alex
Smith Tyrod Teller there as a stop gap guy. Who Okay,
we keep Lynch in the mix, maybe we draft somebody
in the first round or the second round, and in
(01:41:40):
the meantime, we buyed a year or two with Tyrode
at fifteen million a year, which is not a lot
of money in today's quarterback market, especially when there's no
future guarantees hanging over your head. So I have a
little Gary Kubiak knows Tyrode a little bit from their
time together in Baltimore. That wouldn't surprise me. Huh, okay,
what about Arizona? Who becomes their quarterback? And I wonder
about Sam Bradford there. I wonder about Josh McCowan there. Say,
(01:42:04):
if Kirk Cousins does end up with the Jets, um
and then they don't need a band aid quarterback, you know,
maybe that's a spot for foals as well, if if
he plays well and they decided to trade him. I
don't see the Alex Smith thing there. I don't see
Drew Brees there. I I figured there's somewhere in that
middle tier with quarterbacks that may be a spot where
they say, look, if we can keep Sam Bradford healthy,
(01:42:26):
that's a huge if. I meant in the world, I
wouldn't touch him with a fifty ftball, But I thought
he's going to sign him. I've talked to GM just yesterday.
He was like, look, I've never been a big Sam
Bradford fam but he played great Week one. But how
can you say a guys, you're starting quarterback when he
can't play two consecutive weeks in the NFL, I mean
over the last six years, I think he's missed more
games than he's played. So but somebody will sign him
because of the desperation. Somebody will will be left holding
(01:42:48):
the bag when that initial circle of activities complete. Um,
you mentioned no Alex Smith there. Does that mean Alex
Smith to Cleveland is at the field that. I don't know.
It's a fad of company, but I believe John Doris
would be willing to trade a second round pick for
him to add some stability there, to start winning some
football games, to have a guy who truly will mentor
whoever that young guy is, who just went through this
(01:43:10):
to a certain degree with Mahomes. And while that may
not be ideal, I think with a good draft and
Alex Smith in that division, which is no great shakes,
I think they could win five or six games next year.
I don't think that's out of the roma possibility. And
then you turned over to the kid a year later.
The last thing, in terms of quarterbacks, Jacksonville, right, they
did a lot with break Bortles, but they told us
all we need to know about how they feel about
(01:43:31):
Blake Bortles. When they get the ball back with fifty
five seconds ago and they take a knee, even though
they have time outs and a chance to maybe at
least at minimum kick a field goal um and even
try to throw the ball um, what do they do
at quarterback? I believe that they were gonna stick with
Blake Bortles prior to the risk surgery, and now with
the risk surgery. Look that that fifth year option is
guaranteed for injury. So if he can't pass and eggs,
(01:43:53):
you know, and an entry physical the first day of
the league year, that nineteen million dollars is guaranteed per
the injury. So I don't think he's going anywhere anyway.
That could be another spot though, where the backup isn't
a Heny type, So he has to pass the physical
by when by the start of the league year, which
is going to be able to I mean, is he
really gonna be able to fully practice and be able
to go into the market unencumbered and pass anybody's physical
(01:44:15):
and be you know, a perfectly clean free agent. It's doubtful.
So their bed is probably made. Yeah, it's interesting because
I mean, couldn't the argument be like, wait a second,
if he was really hurt, how the hell have he
played the whole year with this risk injury. We saw
this with Buffalo and Tyrod. There's a similar situation and
it turned out that his timing, he was back in
time and they were gonna keep him anyway. I think
it's a bit of a mood point because I think
(01:44:39):
Sean kan really wants this to work. I mean, go
back to what he was saying the owner at the
end of the regular season. He was crowing as if
this had been the you know, everything we thought this
guy was has been affirmed and he's now a playoff
quarterback and this was a smart pick and ha ha ha,
you fools doubt at us. I don't know that they're
wavering off of that now. I think with the way
that teams built, like at nineteen million dollars a lot
(01:45:01):
of money, but not dreadful and quarterback situation, they don't
have future cap issues hanging over their head with him.
They don't have future expenditures due to him if you
rent him for one more year at nineteen million. With
the way they play defense, and the way they think
they can run the ball, although I don't think they
run the ball the way some people make it sound
like they run the ball. Uh. I think they stick
with the status quo. The real question for me there
is do they do some sort of a bridge contract.
(01:45:23):
I would not in a million years, but sometimes teams
are inclined to do so. Okay, the Patriots playing the
Super Bowl, this is like a month after an article
comes out that says, uh, there's you know, relationship issues
between Brady. It's done. Okay, but they're gonna lose their
(01:45:43):
COORDINATEY losing all three coordinators looks like right, so so
they just do it again next year. I mean, look
at that division, right, If Tom Brady is healthy and
he's anything close to Tom Brady, then they're gonna win
ten games. Is anybody else in that division winning at
least ten games? I doubt it unless somebody has a
masterful offseason. I put some back in the playoffs with
likely one home playoff game at least. I mean, it's
(01:46:04):
it's not over. Actually working on a column on this today.
Like I talked to Josh McDaniels about it for a while,
like he was falling I'm like, so, you know, Brady
and Belichick, they're really slowing down right, And he's like,
what are you talking about? And I'm like, you know, Belichick,
you think at a chance he's not the coach next year?
Like he starts laughing. He's like Bill, It's like Bill Belichick.
He's like, I mean, I can't talk for the guy,
but yeah, he's a coach newing a Patrick. He's gonna
(01:46:25):
be coaching them again next year. Tom Brady is gonna
be playing again next year. Like, these guys are stone
cold assassins their football sideboards who were wired to focus
in on the Lombardi Trophy three hundred and sixty five
days a year. The fact that Tom Brady didn't get
enough gold Star stickers for what he did in practice,
or didn't get named Patriot in the Week enough, or
whatever alleged. You know, atrocities have happened to where now
(01:46:45):
these assassins are all in their feelings. No, they come
together for one reason to win and to go down
as legends. The greatest quarterback and the greatest coach. That's
not breaking up anytime soon. He said, you mentioned you
spoke to Josh McDaniels. Um he takes the cold job.
Now lux can start throwing a football in l A
in front of doctors and rehab people. Did he take
(01:47:07):
the job not knowing what Luck was? What he knows
as much as anybody can know at this point. I
mean he knows everything that that knows everything that Chris Bowler,
the GM knows everything, the doctors know. Um, there's always
gonna be some uncertainty when you're talking about a guy's
throwing shoulder, but all the evidence they have gathered to
this point suggest that they he could put this behind
(01:47:28):
him and move forward. If not, he does know Jacoby
Brissette a little bit. But yes, Andrew Luck is a
big part of the reason you take this job. And
I believe Josh McDaniels with a quasi healthy Andrew Luck
will be devastating. I I tend to agree, And I
think they probably moved that Jacoby Brissette. If they feel
good about it. You can move Koby Brissette and he
could be one of those quarterbacks in one of those
spots that we've talked about, turning that asset into something
(01:47:51):
in the draft. Jason great stuff. Enjoy the game. I
know this's a crazy busy week for you. I can't
tell you how much I appreciate it. No worries, man,
my pleasure. That's Jail c Fall on Twitter. If you
want any the late breaking news in the NFL, push
read his work at CBS sports dot com. Let's get
you to Dan fire with a sports update. Let's do
Dan well, Doug, you guys are talking about the NFL
(01:48:12):
talking about quarterbacks. Alex Smith earlier today on Fox Sports
already on the Dan Patrick Show, talked about his future
that may not necessarily be in Kansas City. You're looking
at a playoff team would be ideal, Right, that makes sense.
You don't want to go to You would love to
go to a place that if if that's the case,
if you're going somewhere, Yeah, you want to go somewhere
you have a chance to success. Yeah, yes, Okay, I
mean I feel it wouldn't you. That seems like an
(01:48:35):
obvious answer, but Alex Smith gave that answer today on
the DP Show. Could an option be Jacksonville? Well maybe
maybe not. Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles did have his option
picked up in the spring, but did have risk surgery recently,
an injury that dates back to sixteen, but at least
Portals is under contract for next season. Is left handed
(01:48:55):
about that. They actually had surgery to switch hands. So
now they're gonna put one hand on the other arm
and vice versa for right hand and you put your
right hand out speaking of um, no, not to turn
yourself around that. Yeah, that's like stage three, like the
first part. Okay, I can do. The Patriots quarterback Tom
(01:49:16):
Brady seems to be doing the hokey pokey with his
right hand yesterday, wearing gloves today, another glove on his
right hand. Still can't see the incision that apparently needed
twelve stitches, but Brady saying that his under armor glove
provides a lot of recovery, so he continues to wear it.
Still on track to start Super Bowl fifty two, where,
by the way, tickets stug just checked on the resale
(01:49:38):
sites a popular resale site thirty seven hundred fifty dollars
for one ticket in the upper deck the Super Bowl Sunday,
Super Bowl fifty two between the Eagles and Patriots. How
about the NBA tonight? Steph Curry gonna go against the
Utah Jazz despite a source shoulder. Pistons forward Blake Griffin
won't play tonight against the Cavaliers, likely to make his
(01:49:58):
debut at a Pistons uniform coming Thursday against the Memphis Grizzlies.
And Wizard's guard John Wall is gonna miss six weeks
of action following surgery on his knee. That means Wall
will also miss next month's All Star Game in Los Angeles,
so they'll have to find a replacement for him on
the Eastern cop Have you seen Steph Curry has been
doing like, I don't know, if a lot of three?
(01:50:19):
Oh my god, like, I mean it really create Like
the only game in which recently he played poorly I
think was the last game played poorly was the Houston
game right where you're six or twenty from the floor
five and fifteen from three. But the numbers he's been
putting up are just filthy. And and Clay has been
magnificent too, And I know you are a big play guy.
(01:50:40):
But they may just not still get their public that
they deserve. No, I don't think so. And that's because
Kevin Durant second or bet for best player in the league,
depending on which that's Dan Buyer. He'll join us, rejoin
us with the press, uh in mirror moments. But let's
let's welcome in the great Ryan Leaf who joined us?
Like that, why how do you want to be introduced? Mediocre? Um?
(01:51:02):
When I say mediocre? Hold on, this is an interesting
interesting thing. When I see mediocre? What what? What? What's
your what? What does the word mediocre mean to you? Um?
Flawed human being trying to be better every day? I
know that's who you are. But mediocre actually means average.
But I know, but like people say mediocre, like, man,
I'm better than mediocre, Like just like that's not terrible.
(01:51:24):
I'm happy. I'm okay with that. I understand. But I
think most people think that mediocres is bad, right, yeah, probably,
whereas like subpar is bad. Uh but even sub part
doesn't sound as bad as mediocre does. But for whatever reason, mediocre,
how are you? I'm I'm good man, I'm It's been
a busy day, been running around here. But you know,
we're getting our message out, we're helping people, and I
(01:51:47):
get to interact with guys I don't. I don't see
on a on a on a on too many times
a year. So um, you have and you're working with
Transcend Recovery Community and this is. I know this has
become your life's work, and so for for people who
don't know exactly what that is explained, Uh, it's a
recovery community that's based in Los Angeles. We have UH
(01:52:07):
facilities in New York and Houston as well, and they're
sober living in environments that help people who are dealing
with substance abuse and mental health issues. And your right,
it's it's the center of my universe, you know. It's
it's the foundation that allows me to do all these
other great things, to do work with Fox, with you
guys there, to work with work with Sirius x M
as a college football analyst, and it allows me to
(01:52:29):
do all those other things. But it's it's got to
be set in that foundation. It's my center or my constant.
I had to have you on because, Uh, at first
of it's Wazoo. Second, it's the quarterback. Third, I mean
every I think everyone was just crestfallen for what happened
with Tyler Hlinsky. Who um, if you that's my job,
people's memory. He started the Holiday Bowl because Luke Falk
(01:52:52):
was injured and he was set to be the starting
quarterback at Washington State next season. He tragically decided to
take his own life, going back about week and a
half ago, and of course, uh your tweet afterwards, um
to him and to his family and two people around him.
Uh was in it? Just it felt incredibly, incredibly honest.
You've been you you were through some tough times, man,
(01:53:14):
and the tough times um that I'm sure people would say,
you know, hey, you brought it on yourself, Like yeah,
but you know, addiction is a nasty disease, and when
you couple it with depression, um it, it's really hard
to dig yourself out of. Did you ever have thoughts
of suicide? Yeah? Man, I look at that. So I
have the scar on my left wrist here where I
(01:53:35):
or I attempted to to to you know, take my
when was it had been after the first time I
was arrested, after I bonded out, in between in between
when I got arrested again, and and and uh just
about six years ago. And uh so when that happened.
When I heard about Tyler, it was the immediate reaction
(01:53:56):
was you know, I knew exactly where was or how
he felt that moment where you feel the best possible
answer is not to be here anymore. That that was
the that would be the relief to these feelings. Uh,
and they passed. I just what I wished, and what
I stated in the tweet was simply, I wish I
was in that room in the apartment where I could
(01:54:17):
look him in the eye, that amazing young man and
say you know I've been right there. It's uh, I
know a way out. Um, there's hope. And then I
said I would I would have wrapped my arms around
him and just never let go. How um I mean,
if I'm bringing up a terrible memory, I apologize, but
(01:54:39):
you you did show me the scar, which is just
jarring to me. Um, Like, do you you cut your
wrists and then you close your eyes and hope it
all goes away? Is that what happens? Yeah? I think so.
Um it was. It's so hard to look back and
I remember it, of course, But it's so hard because
(01:55:00):
of where my life is right now, because of the
the decisions and choices I've decided to make moving forward.
You and I've got to discover a relationship with one
another where you've only known you only really known me
from this version, right, And so it's hard for hard
to believe for a lot of people, but I know
exactly where he was at. So that was that's what
made it so so difficult to understand. I was just
(01:55:21):
with him at the Holiday Bowl. I had breakfast with him. Um,
it's it's sad. I feel so bad for his family.
I do too, and for the people who left behind. Right,
it's it becomes whether it and whatever the issue is,
whether it was a girl, whether it was your future,
whether it's just you know, depression, which is so so powerful.
Um okay, So here's my honest question to which I've
(01:55:43):
always wondered. I've I suffered depression when I was a
Notre Dame. I've suffered it when I as a as
a professional as well. Um, and I've gotten the therapist
whatever That's helped some and some of it is just
I don't think I have the wiring. Frankly, I don't
think I have the guts to to even think about
pulling something like that off. I just don't. And now
I have so much to live for, like you, I
have a young family. How do you Is there a
(01:56:05):
way to recognize the symptoms? Right? Like, Because I know
what you're saying is, man, I wish I was in
that room so that I could just hug him and
I could hold on to him, but you had you
had breakfast with him, Like there obviously wasn't a sign there,
Like how do we Is there a way to read
a friend to go like he's in a bad place.
I need to say something in my in my space,
I was, I started distancing myself and I was I
wouldn't show up, you know, I was, I wasn't present.
(01:56:27):
I would start distancing myself from people and not showing
up for things. And that's where the signs developed for me.
From all things, I'm hearing that that wasn't happening until
right right right about the last final moments. And that's
that's why it's so difficult. That's why we need to
raise the awareness so much and say these feelings that
you're having, they're okay, and it's okay. Then to tell
(01:56:48):
somebody about it. You don't start exhibiting these symptoms because
you're feeling them, but to be able to tell them,
tell somebody else that you're going through something, uh is
huge because you just don't see in TV and movies
where you're where the star quarterback or or or the
valedictorian stands up in front of a group full of
his peers and says, Hey, everybody, I'm struggling. I need
some help here. It's just we don't see that, so
(01:57:09):
it's foreign and the stigma, it's not a part of
the culture. There's a total stigma to getting mental healthcare.
It is right, Um, you also you had a pain
killer addiction, and uh, some I've always wanted to ask
I don't think I've ever asked you, Honor off air,
is what about people who they have oral surgery or
they do have a legit injury and they get a script.
(01:57:29):
How can you protect yourself? Because these are super super
powerful drugs that sometimes you're just wired to which it
becomes addictive. Like, how what's your as a professional now,
as somebody who helps people through the recovery process, how
do you protect yourself so that they don't have to
call you a transcend Yeah, full transparency between you and
your doctor. I think, you know, if you feel like
(01:57:50):
there's family history or if you've had an issue before,
you need to be fully transparent with your transparent with
your doctor and the doctor. You know. I talked to
a medical professional of mine who said, we about three
hours in our four years of medical school and addiction.
It just it doesn't exist. I guarantee you if a
doctor steps in front of you and says this medication
(01:58:10):
is needed for acute pain. But let me just warn you,
ten years from now you may be breaking into houses
and going to prison because of it. You might have
a different alternative to what you want to take. So
it's important for the doctor to be fully transparent and
honest about what these pills can do. For a long time,
the pharmaceutical industry had a salespeople who would lobby in
and essentially bribe doctors to prescribe their medication more and
(01:58:31):
more and more. Of course, that's being more limited now
with with laws and things like that nature, but still
they're just not aware. They They immediately want to alleviate
somebody's pain. So this is how they do it. Um.
For me, I know I'm gonna have surgery again in
my life. I just sam I got beat up for
a living. There's joints that are gonna need be replaced. Um,
and that's gonna be about me talking to my sponsor.
That's gonna be talking to my therapist, uh, to my
(01:58:52):
fiance probably be in charge of holding my medication. So
when because you have to you go through a surgery
where that's uh uh so intrusive like that, could you
do medical marijuana with that? With that? I don't believe you.
You maybe, but I I just the essence of trying
to steer aware, stay away from mood altering substance altogether,
for me is how I choose to live my life.
(01:59:14):
And because I work in this world and I've seen
people have used marijuana, no matter whether it was a
medical issue or not, become delusional because of the drug,
you know, I tend to just believe in absence altogether.
And if I can stay if I have surgery and
I can stay on, I'd be profen through the whole process.
I'm going to alright done. Last thing. You're forty one,
Brady is four years old. Can you believe this guy
is doing good? Story are Rose Bowl against Michigan. I'm
(01:59:38):
warming up. I look over the sideline. I'm watching Brian
Greasy and then there's this there's this skinny guy wearing
number ten. He turns around and says Brady on the
back and his shoulder paths go out about a foot
longer than his shoulders and he's like these toothpick arms
come down, and I immediately thought, I go, you know what,
that dude's gonna be the greatest NFL quarterback to ever play.
I know it. Get out here of course, Okay, I
(02:00:00):
was like, really said that. That's amazing. I'm prophetic. I
got it. I gotta figure it out. It's it's been
so fun to watch him do what he's done. I
have a sneaky suspicion, of course. This is just my
opinion is that I think if they win Sunday, he
rides off into the sunset. Really he is doing the
(02:00:20):
ton versus time thing. But I don't know, I don't know. Wow,
six six titles. Six is six is big. He already
passed Montana. He to be the greatest winning quarterback. You
win back to back, it's so hard to get back.
He's gonna lose McDaniels. But there's also the ego of
the ego of hey, I just did it. I can
do it again. It ain't that hard. Hey, you know,
(02:00:42):
if you uh and pull it. John Elway right up
in the sunset and no Way of course went back
to back as well. It's great to see you. This
is awesome work. Go to Transcend Recovery Community dot com
for more information, or just follow Ryan on Twitter at

is your life's work and I'm so happy you've on
a good place. Ryan Leaf joining us. Lebron James to
(02:01:02):
the Clippers. Not so fast, that's next. Car shopping can
be confusing with terms like dealer price, liz price, an
invoice price. True Car shows what other people paid for
the car you want. You can recognize a good price
when you're ready to buy a new or used car.
Visit True Car and they enjoy more confident car buying experience.
(02:01:23):
Michael Irvin Kareem Hunt, Alvin Kamara all join us tomorrow.
Many thanks. If I don't say it at the end
of the week, it's because we're jammed on time to
Cindy Cats and I guess Ryan Music, I don't really
know what music does. Cat Cindy Cats out here pulling
people's side. Can you can you join us? Can you
join us? Music is just rocking out to the music.
He's not He's He's like p Diddy bad boy. I'm
(02:01:44):
I'm in, I'm I'm totally in. Let's get to the press,
the press. John Ramos has been feviously working because there
are at least ten to eleven pieces of sound that
Dan Buyer wants to get to you, Dan, catch me up.
I want as many things in the little sports as possible.
All these sounds of Lebron James to l A really
(02:02:06):
picked up over the last twenty four hours. But ESPN
is now saying that even with the added cap space
that the Clippers may have, Lebron James is not interested
in joining the Clippers this offseason, and the Clippers move
of Blake Griffin likely to free up space for them
to add free agents in twenty nineteen. Jimmy Butler could
be available, or Clay Thompson or Kawhi Leonard. Well, look,
(02:02:27):
Clay Thompson of course from Los Angeles. The the the
one belief is that if the first Warrior voted off
the island, the first guy they've moved on from would
be Clay Thompson. The only thing is Clay Thompson's dad
has been a broadcaster for years for the l A Lakers.
That was that, that's the thought. But the Clippers would
make sense, Uh, Clippers. Obviously, what I said was, Hey,
(02:02:48):
they went in the refrigerator and they're like, something kind
of stinks. Chris Paul, he was the milk. They dumped
that out in the summer. Now of a sudden, they're
just kind of gonna go through and refill up, restock
their fridge at some point. No Bloy Griffin, by the way,
tonight for the Pistons, likely to make his debut on Thursday.
The NBA didn't announce today that all thirty teams next
(02:03:08):
year will compete in the Las Vegas Summer League. So
you would at at one point you would have, you know,
a certain amount, what sixteen teams. No, I'm gonna have
all thirty teams in the Vegas Summer League. It's honestly,
it's great. Uh, they've gotten good TV ratings. But more
than anything, it's where free agent meetings take place. They
have league meetings take place. H Vegas has always been
the spot for a U basketball and summer basketball. Now
(02:03:30):
it's the spot for USA basketball as well as the NBA.
Ken Rosenthal of the MLB on Fox reports at Major
League Baseball will install new phones and dugouts that will
record all conversations on those calls to try and prevent
the stealing of signs. So they are going to record
this call may be monitored. Could happened on every single
(02:03:50):
call to the bullpen. Big brothers watching, I don't know.
They don't have bigger problems to worry about than like
stealing signs. I know now you can can't remember, you
can't wear the smart watch, can't wear the I would
like them to replay calls from the bullpen as opposed
to meeting with the manager, which I would love to
see what Tony Louiser really said when he said he
(02:04:11):
went to get Revsinski and he couldn't pronance his own
couldn't pronounce his own reliever's name. I'd love to hear
those conversations played back right, calls like just get somebody
in here, get doing strung. Oh, we know that Justin
Timberlake is going to perform at halftime a Super Bowl
fifty two also gonna have a special album release party
at Prince's estate at Paisley Park. But there are some
(02:04:34):
Prince fans that aren't happy because they're selling alcohol Prince
didn't drink, and some Prince fans think that maybe Justin
Timberlake is disrespecting the idols wishes. There was also a
little feud when Justin Timberlake had Sexy back out about
ten years ago and Prince said, Sexy never left. But um, look,
will they be playing basketball? Will they have pancakes? That's
(02:04:56):
what I want to know about about at Princess House.
That's all that was the press. You of course know
what that's in. Yes, Dave Chappelle and I drove past
Prince's place last night. You didn't. Yeah, the party is
is the party media party tonight? No, but the Prince's
party that Timberlake cannot go on us. The new album, Dude,
(02:05:17):
I do not like the new songs too many other
good things. Oh man, but he's gonna do it. It's
gonna do it. Doug Out the show, Fox Switch Radio
