Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports, say with me Boom on
a Thursday after I'm glad to have you along with
us for the next three hours, as not only will
we dive into the world of one Eldrick Woods, we
may have a new destination for Kirk Cousins. The destination
for NBA All Stars is Los Angeles. Is the All
(00:23):
Star break is almost here, but he's back for more.
And we're not talking about Jonas Knox and we're not
talking about myself. We are talking about Larry Fitzgoel Elliott.
Joel Elliott is going to leave us in like three minutes,
is our technical producer? I guarante would you would you
the the over under on when the Wizard comes in
(00:46):
and Joel getting out of here because he's been here
for six hours. There's no one who makes an exit
like Joel because it is Boom as soon as the
clock strikes. Yeah, listen when when Sam gets there, he's
going to be very fatigued. John Rolmost is not here,
Thank god. John Ramos is not here because his ego
is out of whack. We needed a day off from
the John rama Show. But Sam is going to be
(01:07):
a zombie walking I'm here. Nobody handles lack of sleep
worse than the history of mankind than Iowa Sam or
the gentleman you call the wizard, so he will be
here and then who knows this show is going to
go off the rails and hurry we can say this, um,
happy birthday to Susanne Ramos. Oh yeah, to Susanne Ramos.
Wow he got out lucky. How birthday right after Valentine's Day?
(01:30):
You call that a joint gift. I don't know if
there is a connection or not, but I do know
that it is Suzanne's birthday today, so we wish her
a happy birthday, and uh just hopefully that they can
they can celebrate good for him, like you can. You
can double up on gifts, like you get her a necklace.
You can say, you know, like half the necklace is
for a birthday, halves for Valentine's Day. Come on, don't
get greedy. It can't be a normal price necklace though.
(01:52):
It's gotta be a little bit higher than that. It's
gotta be like it where you're like, Okay, well, this
is a birthday and Valentine's Well, thank god for the guys.
For dude perfect who are slinging those cage jewelers commercials dances,
because nothing spells romance like a guy throwing a football
out of a cargo plane, just trying to tell you, hey, guys,
hey guys. If you're a guy like us, just a
normal guy, you know, just this is where you go
(02:12):
and shop. And by the way, do you see him
walk out of the store with the bags in their hands.
If I was a jewelry store owner and some guys
showed up dressed in pe clothes like that, I'd have
n't removed and taste immediately upon site. Oh man, jewelry store.
Are we on? Jewelry store interaction is always very awkward.
Oh yeah, I have no idea what questions to ask,
(02:34):
and then they're like, hey, can we you know, help
you find something? And then I don't know. I guess
I'm I don't know, looking for diamonds, and then you
realize you're in the thirty nine dollar watch area. Go
that's the other part of our show room. That that's
what you get. Go to a jewelry store. I got
my my engagement ring I bought for my girlfriend years
and years and years ago. They got it and follow
(02:55):
through that um haggled him, got the price down. Was
that a hundred nine bucks? Talking down to ninety nine?
Because that's what I do, Dan, sales Not too bad salesman. Listen.
I know we're gonna talk Larry Fitzgerald. But did you
get the ring back? Or how did that one? Come?
On to? Listen, don't worry about me. I got it.
I got it under control. Dan. A gentleman and a
(03:16):
salesman here. Maybe all right, good good, that's good to know.
Larry Fitzgerald will get a Hall of Fame ring someday.
It's just not gonna be within the next five years.
Because the Cardinals wide receiver announced today he is coming
back for his fifteenth season in the National Football League.
And it's amazing, Jonas when you think of the career
of Larry Fitzgerald and you look at what we just
had a few weeks ago with the Hall of Fame
(03:38):
announcement of Randy Moss and Tara Owen's getting into the
Hall of Fame. It hasn't been as easy for some
of the top wide receivers to get into the Hall
of Fame. Heckto had to wait a couple of years
for certain reasons. There was that trio of Chris Carter,
Andre Reid, and Tim Brown. They all had to had
to wait, and it was over a three year span
that they all ended up going in. But you really
(04:00):
look at the cream of the crop. Even Marvin Harrison
had to had to wait a while before he went
into the Hall of Fame. There was no doubt I
think in anyone's mind that Larry Fitzgerald will be a
first ballot Hall of Famer. Yeah. Um, he'll get in
first ballot. I'm not surprised that he decided to come back.
He seems like, first of all, he's still playing at
a high level. And the other thing too, with with
(04:22):
Larry Fitzgerald, and I wonder how much of this is
going to make up the conversation about him post career.
Is the decision to move inside and play the slot receiver,
which is just a completely different position altogether, Like you
have to read things differently, the field looks differently. He
went from the outside to the inside. He put up
he continues to put up huge numbers, and he's doing
(04:42):
it with subpar quarterback play. I mean, he's doing it
like who's Who's He had a quarterback consistently the last
couple of years, Carson Palmer can't stay healthy and he's
got Drew Stanton, Like I wouldn't be surprised at this
commitment for this year with them in pursuit of a
new quarterback Kirk Cousins or whoever. In that conversation can
come later on. If if this is more of a
(05:02):
of a two year commitment, that it is a one
year commitment, well they don't even know who the quarterback
is going to be next year, which is as you said,
a whole conversation. But if it is a young guy
Jonas to your point, if if if they bring in
Kirk Cousins, then maybe I think he sticks around for
for two years because you know that if it's a
young guy that needs to develop that who knows. I
don't know. Maybe they won't start right away. I'm not sure.
(05:25):
Maybe then he just decides, all right, another another year
of tread on my tires. This guy is gonna have
to develop some sort of rapport with other guys. Maybe
it's time for me to step away, but he is
going to stick around for another season in the National
Football League. And you mentioned the Cardinals wide the Cardinals
quarterback situation, They were interested in quarterbacks in last year's draft.
(05:47):
There was some interest in Deshaun Kaiser, there was interest
in Deshaun Watson. They just ended up not pulling the
trigger and went elsewhere in deciding on where they wanted
to go. I believe they gosh trying to just think
back of anyway, Neil Lomax. They were looking at that
(06:08):
time thinking like, Okay, we don't know about Carson Palmer's future.
And then now we know about Carson Palmer's future, is
that there is none that that he's retired from the
National Football League. But if they make a decision on
a young quarterback in last year's draft, maybe Larry Fitzgerald's like, oh,
I can stick around three more years. Listen, maybe they
dig up Stoney Case, give him a twirl again. You know,
(06:28):
maybe it's old Stoney Case. Jake Plumber. We can go back, man.
We can talk cardinal quarterbacks all day long. Here's here's
the thing about Larry Fitzgierald. Because he's got a great
reputation around the league. Everybody likes him. Um, if you
watch the Football Life documentary on him, it talks about
how he's got this weird thirst for knowledge, like he
wants to know everything. He asked people questions, whether it's
(06:48):
the cameraman, how do you do this? Why do you
do that? So the only thing I would look at
in him walking away, It's not gonna be if something
happens physically. You can't count on that. The only thing
that I would think he would walk away from is
if he just decides listen. He loves to travel. He
goes places around the world by himself. He's just really
into that thing. If he found something else as intriguing
(07:09):
or more intriguing than football, he would walk away. But
I really think if they hit a home run with
a quarterback this offseason, they bring in somebody that he
actually buys into, you can two more years of him
and who knows where he stands in the record books,
because I mean, if he's catching a hundred balls a
year from the slot position, he's handled it well. There's
still enough talent on that team. It's it's it's a
much better division now, but I think the West gets
(07:32):
a lot more interesting. Also. Hundred nine receptions this past season,
which was actually the most that he's ever had in
his career and tied for the most two years ago.
He also had a hundred and nine receptions, but he's
going to move into second all time, passing Terrell Owens
if he stays healthy for the most second most yards
in NFL history, and there's there's just no doubt that
(07:55):
he is going to be a Hall of Famer. When
you put in the fact Jonas that when they almost
want to Puper Bowl, he would have been the m
v P of that game, and he would have been
one of the few, the very few teams that won
a Super Bowl with elite wide receivers. When you look
at the history that we've had of teams that have
(08:15):
won Super Bowls, elite wide receivers haven't been in that conversation,
but he was one of them, and he was his
touchdown catch to give the Cardinals a late lead in
that game against Pittsburgh, and Super Bowl forty three would
have been his moment. I think he would have been
the Super Bowl m v P. So you could even
put him in that consideration and conversation of is one
of the only few wide receivers that can actually lead
(08:36):
a team to a to a super Bowl and lead
them to a Super Bowl victory. With all of this
given about Larry Fitzgerald. The questions now become in my
mind about everyone else in the National Football League because
we judge wide receivers differently. And when we mentioned it
took a while for t O to get in because
of his attitude. Randy Moss gets in in the teen
class as as a first ballot Hall of Famer. But
(09:00):
the Chris Carter's, DeAndre Reid's, the Tim Brown's, Michael Irvin's,
those guys go into the Hall of Fame jonas Marvin Harrison,
and they had to wait a little while. Does Julio
Jones Is Julio Jones a Hall of Famer? Period? Is
the question is Odell Beckham Jr. Able to stay healthy
in continuing on that path? And as you sit there
and you look at the different wide receivers in the
(09:21):
National Football League for the passing league that we say
it is, there are very few Hall of Fame candidates
in my mind that are wide receivers in the NFL,
and let alone sure fire wide receivers. Right now, I
think Antonio Brown is the only wide receiver that you
could for surely say the National Football League that will
go into the Hall of Fame well. And I also
(09:42):
think the conversation has changed about criteria, and and criteria
is a weird thing because it's so it's depending on
on what It's such an individual thing, I believe, But
I do acknowledge that people within the Hall of Fame Committee,
I think they do have a certain criteria because maybe
just makes their job a little bit easier, Like you know,
so and so if they had did this their first
(10:02):
ballot and if not, which is totally ridiculous, But that's
a conversation for another day. Like all of a sudden,
it's a passing league now, So at what point do
they start looking and almost docking credit for catches in
this league based on the numbers that are being put
up every single year by guys that aren't even in
the same class as Larry Fitzgerald. Like you and I
(10:23):
were having the conversation before the show. It used to
be the standard Bearrett running back in the NFL was
are you a thousand yard back? And then people got
smart to it and realized, well, to be a thousand
yard back, what do you need? Like sixty three yards?
Again say not that impressive? Like when does that conversation
happen when it comes to receivers, like like, when does
that conversation start to take place, because I think that's
(10:44):
going to impact some of these other guys that are
putting up big numbers, and there are tight ends that
are going to go into the Hall of Fame. Antonio Gates,
Jason Witten, Rob Gronkowski I think will be end up
being a Hall of Famer if Rob. If Gronk continues
to play, but there's no doubt that he was dominant.
It's almost Terrell Davis conversation when it comes to to
Gronts candidacy. But when you look at the other wide
(11:06):
receivers in the National Football League, it is not a given.
And the guys that you think that that are the
best there. There are young guys jonas that could trend
that way. But in pure evidence right now, with what
you got as a Hall of Famer, I put Antonio
Brown is the definitely in, and I put Julio Jones in.
Then maybe in last four years some of the best
(11:26):
years that we've seen from a wide receiver, there's no
doubt one of those in a Super Bowl run. Fantasy
football players will always say we Julio Jones doesn't get
into the end zone, and then you think about you know,
when when Matt Ryan needs it the most, does he
always go to Julio Jones? Did he go to Roddy
White at times? Does he go to Mohammed San Now,
So there's there's always those questions. You have none of
those questions with Antonio Brown. The Steelers are always in it.
(11:50):
He's always the guy that Ben Roethlisberger looks forward. You
put those numbers together and Julio Jones is the question
mark in my mind is is Julio Jones a Hall
of Famer in the National Football League? A? J. Green? No,
DA Marius Thomas, no, Jordy Nelson. No. When you think
of the guys that have been around, because that's how
you really have to look at it. Jerold Dell Beckham Jr.
Is trending that way. But it tells you something about
(12:12):
the National Football League and and what it means to
play wide receiver and really how difficult it is, and
shows you how great Larry Fitzgerald actually is. Considering the
guys today, we aren't even sure if they're gonna get
to Canton. Like you love Steve Larging, right, you grow
the Seahawks fans loves people are one of the all
time best with Sin Mohammed has more receptions in him
and his career, and it's not even close that he's
(12:33):
a Hall of Fame. It's it's strange how the conversation
has changed over time. Numbers are so skewed now that
you don't know what's what's what really all any of
it means tay gun offense, running Buffalo, the running shoot
that they ran in Houston, in those passing offenses in
the nineties, Jonas had changed the conversation, and you're right
nowadays it's a whole new conversation when you're looking at guys.
But when you take the numbers of guys that we
(12:55):
even have today, of the guys that we think that
are truly great, there are few and far between, and
the numbers of most don't add up to the greatness
of what you're gonna get for Larry Fitzgerald with the
longevity that he has done it, and don't match to
the greatness of an Antonio Brown and maybe a Julio Jones.
Dan Buyer Jonas knocks him for Doug Gottlieb here Fox

he's going to settle a big debate that we've got
here on the show. So we're gonna find that out
from somebody who's in the know. And he'll do that
next year on FSR Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio.
He's Jonas Knox. I'm Dan Buyer in for Doug today.
You can always reach us on Twitter. I'm at Dan
(13:58):
Buyer on Fox Jonah Is where can they reach you
at at the Jonas Knocks. Our next guest you can
find on Twitter at NBA TV. Rick. He also hosts
each day on ninety two point nine The Game in
Atlanta and you can see him on NBA TV. Rick
Cambella joins us again here on Fox Sports Radio. Happy Thursday. Rick,
Thanks so much for coming on Jonas tell us, let's
(14:20):
we're gonna get to the NBA. But we were just talking,
Larry Fitzgerald. We were talking football. We were talking Hall
of Fame, and with the class of wide receivers that
we've got currently in the National Football League, and maybe
a few and far between of Hall of famers that
are currently active in the NFL, at least with guys
who have put up enough numbers to be considered for
Canton is Julio Jones in your mind a Hall of
(14:44):
Famer if he doesn't do anything more in his career
from today on great question. No, he's not. His touchdown
numbers and h hes missed sometime with in he's not
a ton of time. Look, he's on track to be
All of Famer. But did you frame it as if
(15:06):
he never played again as the Hall of Famer? I
would say no. Like Matt Ryan's teammate, uh Is Instant,
I think to being a Hall of Famer right now
without ever playing a game. He's over forty thou career
passing yards, and many Hall of famers already in that
don't have that many. But I think with with one
he's got a ways to go to to seal the deal.
(15:28):
I think he will, and I think Julio Jones has
a way to go to seal the deal, but I
think he will as well. I do think the Foxins
have two future Hall of Famers, and Ryan and Jones.
Rick Ham NBA TV with us year on Fox Sports Radio. Rick,
I want to ask you about NBA All Star Weekend
for for a lot of us that have never been there,
are never taken part in the festivities. Describe NBA All
(15:49):
Star Weekend and you know what I'm talking about, not
just the games, What's what's the nightlife like, what are
the parties like? What is the scene like an NBA
All Star Weekend. It's amazing, Um, it is Uh, it's
the super Bowl of parties. And I think the NBA
does the best job of bringing together sports and entertainment
for All Star Weekend in terms of all the entertainers
(16:11):
and All Star Saturday Night keeting. Crazy about the Dunk Contest.
You've got a a celebrity game where celebrities actually playing.
But the parties are amazing. Junny Smith Rose an annual party. Uh,
and it's a blast. It's uh, it's it goes you know,
deep into the night. It's it's been a really cool place. Uh.
The parties are amazing. I mean, the women are looking great,
(16:33):
the dudes are all, you know, addressed. It. It's just
it's it's a big event, man. It is a big,
big party. Um. It is as fun, it is as exciting. Uh,
it's in exludinating, is as y'all think. Man. Uh, it's
in your neighborhood. Man. You guys gotta hit your wagon
to some of these parties this weekend. You know we're
we're slumming it on the weekends here though we're working hard. Man,
you gotta keep the network afloat. If it's not for
(16:55):
Dan and I, I don't know where we're aving. We
gotta keep the network afloat. Rick Kavlin joining us here
on Fox Sports Radio. Get him on Twitter at NBA TV. Rick,
can you compare it to a super Bowl week? I mean,
parties wise, can you compare in NBA All Star weekend
to to a super Bowl week? You can now it's
not the volume of of the super Bowl in terms
(17:17):
of the super Bowl is a full week thing. Um,
and you know the super Bowl is bigger for the
obvious reasons. But all of the same superstars that the
send on the super Bowl in the Kevin Hollis Tiffany
Hattison's to this actress and this actor and this musician
and this rock start, most of those things, like Drake
will be there. I can promise you that, Like he
(17:37):
is the guy he's noticed, a fult waterer and stuff.
I love his music by the way. Uh, but he
is going to be at the super Bowl because that
is where the spotlight is, that is where the biggest
party is. So he and and most of the other
big stars that played that attention from Clay that same
played that adoration, They're gonna be there. So I can't
say it's as big as the Super Bowl. I was
(17:58):
in Houston last year. Uh, probably in the Super Bowl
for the Falcons and uh and I left actually on
Super Bowl Sunday, didn't have a chicken whatever, but went
to parties, saw Steve Aoki uh at at a killer
nightclub in Houston, and uh and it was amazing. I mean,
I had a blast super Bowl week in Houston, and
I had a blast every time I got to NBA
(18:19):
All Star Weekend. It's close, but I'll give the nod
to the Super Bowl. Rick Hamble, NBA TV this year
On Fox Sports Radio, Dan Buyer, Jonas knocks and for
Doug Gottlieb. I was thinking about this just before the show,
and Dan and I were talking a little bit with
today's NBA and how everybody's it feels like it's a
little more petty. Um. Guys are starting to job back
and forth more, they're taking shots on social media like
(18:41):
it's it's just a different it's a different day and age.
Do you do you see any of that sort of
building up and maybe some guys having some issues when
they finally run into each other this weekend in l A.
There's booze involved there at a party and now somebody's
got to be held responsible for something they sent out
in a tweet or an Instagram post. Say, do you
see any of that possibly taking place? Anything's possible nowadays, Jonas, Um,
(19:05):
I tell you what if Isaiah Thomas and re gian
Rondo attended the same party, uh sparks will fly. I
thought that was awesome. And boy, you want to talk
about petty. Both of those guys are petty and I'm
not even saying petty and necessarily a bad way, Like
it's some people are petty, like and and it's it's
it can be competitive, it can be entertaining, it can
even be charming at Thoms UM and so this I
(19:28):
would flame within that. Uh, but you've got Rondo. You know,
former Celtic point guard Isaiah Thomas. Former Celtic point guard Rondo.
I don't know if he ever got a video tribute.
If he didn't, it's a champion. I'm sure he's looking
at Isiah Thomas like, yo, dude, why the how are
you getting the video tribute? I want a championship there
with the Big three. UM. And so you've got that.
(19:48):
And Rondo was on one last night. I watched that game.
He went into it, uh, having the ship on his
shoulder about Isaiah, and he lives. I mean he didn't
like punch him in the face, but just through during
he plays and elbows and shoulders, he kind of knocked
isa in the face like three times. UM in the
time when they got a Jeff and I don't know
if you guys saw it, but they're literally like jock
(20:11):
like like doing swim moves through each other, jockeying for
position and at the same time talking to the officials
and and then they both get weren't out of the game.
I don't know. I love that stuff, man, sweet that
is like good NBA drama. Rick Cambell joining us here
on Fox Sports Radio of course, of NBA TV and
or not need to put on the game in Atlanta.
Is there something wrong with the Celtics as they've dropped
(20:32):
back to back home games to the Cavaliers and now
last night against the Clippers. Is there something wrong in Boston?
Great question, Yes, and it's fatigue and they're missing Marcus
smart Um And he said, well, aren't the missing Gordon?
They were? Of course they are, but they were like
kicking but without Gordon Hayward. And I'm not I'm not
sliding the contributions that he will eventually make. They're gonna
(20:54):
be an elite team. They're going to be a serious
factor for for Cleveland. Right now, Boston's not beating Cleveland.
I mean, we saw a play out on Faul Pierce
Day and Mantus smart wasn't there. He makes them that
much better. But they got beat down in the first
game of this new loa Cavalier team. That was a
statement to me. That was a competence shrinker for Boston.
(21:15):
That was a competent sweller for Cleveland. Um, but Boston
is fatigued. They're out of gas. Uh. They hang their
hat on defense, ironically enough, and really one of the
one of the main guys for that defense is Marcus
Smart and he I'm speculating, but you put one on
one together, don't think he punched up a frame on
the wall, blooded up his hands, screwed it up, and
(21:35):
he can't play. So when they get Marcus Smart alf,
when they come out of the All Star break, I
think we're gonna see that jip and that in the
quick twitch back with Boston there in mud right now,
the break is coming at a perfect time for them. Rick,
I wanted before we let you go, I one more
for me, Rick Ham l MBA TV with us year
on Fox Sports Radio. If if take conference out of it,
Western Conference Eastern Conference, if you had to pick a
(21:57):
final four between know the two best matchups, most interesting
matchups at this point of the season to determine who
the best team is. What is your final four? What's
you're seating interesting? Um? I want to see I would
want to see Boston play Golden State and I would
want to see Houston play Cleveland to me, Houston against
(22:18):
Cleveland would be one forty five to one forty one
in regulation. Um, you know it would. Cleveland is just Uh,
they're an offensive juggernaut with these new guys. Um. In
terms of the Caps, are that two games with their
new four players, they have fifty plus bench points in
each game. Um. And you know the Rockets are are
(22:40):
just amazing. They've got they've got scored like Ryan Anderson
is one of the better scoring stretch fours in the NBA.
And really the world is everging ten points a game
this year. Uh, You've got Eric Gordon and Paul and
Hard and you just added Joe Johnson. You've got a reason.
P J Talker, Clint Coppola, I could go on. They're
so talented and so deep. I would love to see
(23:00):
that Houston Cleveland matchup play out. Uh. And then Boston
and Golden State. Um, look, I don't think Gordon Hayward
is is done for the year. I don't think Boston's
putting any pressure on him. Uh. And obviously so, but
it happened so early in the season. Remember Paul Paul
George broke his leg at the USA BE Scrimmage in
(23:21):
Vegas and came back at the end of that season,
so I think it's possible. And if Hayward comes back,
Marcus smartest healthy. Um, I think they could really give
give the Warriors a tough time and they'd take a
couple of games off of them. See him on NBA
TV here, I'm on ninety two nine The Game and
Atlanta and follow him on Twitter at NBA TV. Rick.
He's Rick Kamla. Thanks, Rick, We appreciate it. Enjoy All

So MICHAELA. Schiffron of the US will not compete in
the Super g this week. She just won the slalom
gold late last night. Our time US men's hockey play
Slovakia tonight after blowing it to nothing lead in its opener,
losing three two in overtime to Slovenia U S against
(25:32):
the Russians this weekend. FS one tonight will carry the
dual races from DAYTONA. Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will return
for a fifteen season with the Arizona Cardinals. New Orleans
postponed NBA game against Indiana has now been rescheduled for
March twenty one. The game was not played about a
week ago due to a leak in the roof, and
just two NBA games tonight and then the All Star
(25:54):
Break All Star weekend in l A this weekend. Thank you.
It's a good thing that the roof, the roof, the
roof wasn't on fire, and then it was just a yeah,
just the league, thank you very much, Steve. The NBA's
I don't want to call it first half because it's
not even close to a half. The first part of
the NBA season is about to wrap up tonight two
(26:15):
games Lakers and Timberwolves and the Bucks take on the Nuggets.
So the Lakers are in action tonight, but Alonzo Ball
is not still out with that knee injury, not gonna
return until after the All Star break. And now there
is a piece done by ESPNS Ramona shelbourne a little
bit more on Alonzo Ball and really the relationship that
LaVar Ball has with his son Alonzo and everything that
(26:38):
comes with a Big ball Er brand. But a revealing
piece by Ramona Shelburne pointing out the fact that the
home that they have in Chino Hills that is five
million dollars is actually in Alonzo's name. There's also some
some other questions about how the Big Baller brand. We've
heard that about how maybe their customer service representation is
not some of the best. And when asked about the
(27:01):
threats that LaVar made of a Lonzo leaving the Lakers
and having his two brothers join him on whatever NBA team,
Alonzo said, quote, I always just play, he always talks.
It's always been the same way. That revealing a little
bit into the life of a Lonzo Ball, in the
life of Alonzo Ball with his father LaVar Ball. My feeling,
(27:21):
Jonas is that LaVar Ball can talk and talk and
talk all that he wants, but in the end, he's
actually just hurting Alonzo's career while trying to lift up
the career of the other two brothers who aren't as
good as Alonzo in trying to make Hay while the
Big Baller brand is still relevant. And that's always been
my issue with LaVar talking so much and saying the
(27:42):
things that he needs to. Is a Lonzo Ball I
think could have a very nice NBA career, But after
dealing with everything that he's done in the first what
six months of his NBA career, He's gonna be labeled
as toxic because of LaVar And it's all of LaVar's
hope of I've got a thirty six month window to
make this big Baller brand and actual Brandon after that,
it's going to go out the window. And I think
(28:02):
that we're now seeing a little bit more evidence of
this that LaVar Ball, of just saying outrageous things is
once again hurting a Lonzo Ball status, not only with
the Lakers, but really in the NBA. I don't feel
at least a bit bad for the Lakers. They knew
that they were getting into. They drafted him because it
was a pr move. And so this is what you get.
I mean, you had plenty of warning signs as this
came along with it. The other part, how do we
(28:23):
know a Lonzo Ball isn't okay with all this because
somebody's talking to LaVar Ball and telling him stuff about
Luke Walton, Somebody's having conversations with him. And to think
that this guy, at this point in time, if it
was really bothering him or really affecting him, wouldn't talk
to his own dad and said hey, cool. Like if
it was my dad and he was doing this and
(28:44):
I felt like it was really affecting my career, I
would have had a conversation with him a long long
time ago. The idea that that he's scared or that
he's intimidated by his father to try and have a
talk with him, to me, I think, if you're gonna
blame LaVar Ball, I mean, then then you also got
to blame Alonzo and his two brothers, because I don't
see any of them trying to tell him to stop. Like,
(29:06):
how do we know that they're not all just kind
of in this together. Well, I think that lie Angelo
and LaMelo's sixteen years old. I forgot their names, but
he's so glad. I think that they actually would have
something to gain with this, is that their careers would
be lifted. I just don't think Alonzo's is to your
point about maybe Alonzo being okay with all of this.
(29:28):
He released a song on a mix tape recently about
his father, and I believe we have that song. So
here's a taste of maybe how Alonzo really does feel
about his father LaVar in the song on Alonzo's mixtape.
Never since the child Venice stuff, I've always looked up
(29:53):
people looking crazy asking I just left because I know
they're talking about Lava. Yeah, can hate on That's the
first one that still was. It got coke listen to
the story and I just I was told devil you
to one. So alright? So okay, or do you want
(30:13):
to start? You want a review of the song? He stinks? Okay,
that's worse than a shot. Okay, first of all, he
shoots the ball and he's a t rex. Secondly, uh,
what the hell was that? That's that was awful? The
if the last line of if we want to criticize LaVar,
calm the devil, then we're the one that sold our soul.
(30:33):
I don't believe that it's accurate. I just think that
as we view what is happening and what has gone
on in the NBA so far with Alonzo Ball's career,
um yeah, I just don't think it's worked out as
well as as it could be. And now he's going
to be labeled as toxic. We've seen it in the
NFL Johnny Manzel toxic. Lonzo Ball has done nothing. But
there there's things that people don't want to touch with
(30:55):
Alonzo Ball because of everything that came with it for
LaVar and you're right, the Lakers knew what they were
getting into. They but I don't think it's a Lakers conversation.
I think it's a number two overall pick in the
NBA draft is not gonna be wanted, even though he
could have a He could have a great NBA career
for ten or fifteen years. Averaging thirteen points per game
in tennis is per contest, but nobody's gonna want to
(31:16):
deal with that because of everything that has come with
What is going on. Is a Lonzo Ball a big
time name in sports like as far as as far
as the name that's talked about a lot. Is he
a big time name? Okay, he's a big time name,
and it's not because of his basketball, because yeah, he
played well at U C. L A. But he was
outplayed in the tournament by Fox. He was there were
(31:38):
times where you know, either the shot wasn't there, his
shot has been told that it's broken. Um, he's not
athletic enough at this point. He's not bigger strong enough
at this point. Like he his name is where it's
at because of his dad. Like if his dad, people
on the East Coast were staying up to watch games
on the West Coast because LaVar Ball was talking. Every
time he was on the sideline, somebody put a mike
(31:59):
in his face. And we don't have to like it.
We don't have to have to be fans of his approach,
but his approach worked in that regard. Listen, Adam Morrison
was fantastic. He also played on the West Coast. Nobody
was staying up late to watch Adam Morrison play games.
I just think like it depends on what you expected.
If you just expect him to be your everyday, ordinary
number two pick overall in the draft, like an Evan Turner,
(32:23):
then Okay, that's fine, but this was always the approach
going into it. I don't have an issue with But
if you look at what a Lonzo what has gone
on with his career, he's not He's not benefiting monetarily
from what LaVar has done at all. He would have
been the second overall pick. He was one of the
top talents in college basketball last I don't know if
he would have been the second overall pick if it
wasn't for he've been at a lottery pick. Yeah. So
(32:47):
the the the millions that may be perceived that he's
getting because of his notoriety isn't there. And I think
LaVar hurts him on the back end when he could
receive another contract. And that's where I look at all
of this and say, jeez, if he becomes whenever, and
we're already talking about a Lonzo leaving the Lakers in
free agency in four years whatever it could be, I
wish we should do that later on. It's never been
(33:08):
done before. The fact is is that he's not going
to be able to maybe make the money that he
could have because of everything that has gone on. Now
in three or four years, is this all where out
in LaVar realizes that Alonzo is gonna get his and
I just need to take this three years to really
build up the brand, and if it doesn't work, it
doesn't work. Alonso still going to play in the NBA, maybe,
but I don't think that he's really benefited from anything
(33:30):
monetarily with what he's done and really has just made
more of a difficult situation, not only for Alonzo but
his teammates around. I just it to me he would
have already if it was really bothering him, he would
have already said not only is he not done anything
about it, he's releasing a rap song and a bad
one at that, supporting his dad. Like if my dad
(33:51):
called our boss Scott Shapiro and started demanding or started
calling him out on social media, which is impossible because
he's dead, Dan, I didn't know if you knew that
or not, so it would be a totally impossible situation.
But hypothetically speaking, if he did that, I would I
would call my dad after the first tweet and say, hey, dummy,
what are you doing? Like you're you're you're affecting my career.
I just think I don't think Lonzo Ball's got any
(34:12):
issue with this at all. And that's that's where if
you want to point fingers at him and say listen man,
like you're building yourself a bad bed delay and like
then I then I can understand the conversation. You know,
he's still a young kid as well, and that's the
other thing of of you know, whether whether there is
fear or not fear, and he doesn't want to, you know,
confront Lavarro with it. He does feel loyalty, as you
hear in that song that LaVar was the one with
(34:34):
him from the beginning. But I also think that there
could be broader horizons if Leavar just steps out of
the way that's just me and and not try to
lift up the other two kids that he has want.

Doug gott leaps show on Fox Sports Radio. He's Jonas Knocks.
(35:17):
I'm Dan Buyer, glad to have you with us. By
the way, Jonas, I threw this up on Twitter about
our wide receiver conversation. Larry Fitzgerald gonna be a Hall
of Famer, and I think Antonio Brown will as well.
Interesting responses if to Marius Thomas continues the pace, there's
Larry thinking that he will be a Hall of famer.
We also got a Michael Thomas response from yeah from
(35:41):
a step who tweeted in, and Roy Combs tweets in
a J Green Um, I don't know that a J Yeah,
the numbers are good, but I don't think that there
was ever a time when you're like, Okay, wow, he
really lifted the Bengals to a place where they couldn't
have been without They always say one of the arguments
(36:01):
they use a non numbers argument is can you tell
the story of the NFL without blank? I'm pretty sure
you can tell the story the NFL with that. Aj
G pretty confidently there's not a horror lasting mp NFL
actual want not tell you to keep reading. Let's play
a game. This is game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
(36:30):
All right, Steve the Sega is here to play a game.
We like to call more or less Hello Steve, Good
afternoon again, gentlemen, more or less meaning that we will
have for example, today with the Larry Fitzgerald theme, I'll
be given out names of other NFL receivers, good ones
in history, and then you'll have to say more or
(36:51):
less on the yardage to the catches things that I
bring up, So prepare yourselves. Larry Fitzgerald, we know is
number three all time in NFL receptions, number three all
time in receiving yards. It's pretty rare to have a
thousand catches in your NFL career, so let's choose that
number more or less than a thousand career catches in
(37:11):
the NFL. Four For example, we know Marvin Harrison, Hall
of Famer, has over a thousand catches. What about Reggie Wayne, gentleman,
Reggie Wayne more or less than a thousand? Man? This
is tough. Um, I'm gonna go more and are you
going against each other. Are you a team? You're like
the Koreans. You're a unified teams for two weeks and
(37:33):
then you'll go back to hating each other. Listen, we're
just looking at a team curling on one of the TVs.
So I think it's I think it's okay to go
with the team route. We're gonna go on the opposite
of what receivers are. We are not divas here. We
are a team. Dan, you want to go more than
a thousand? Yes, I know this for the simple fact
of his I think his catches where the former frequency
of a radio station I worked at. So I'm gonna
(37:55):
say more. Yeah, there's the big ten seven. Yes, absolutely,
That's the only reason that I know that, because you're
gonna get a beating in this segment. Steve. I'm not
sure even Ritchie Wayne knows that, but Dan does. Okay,
we know we had the rams greatest show on turf,
(38:18):
had a couple of great receivers. Let's go to Isaac
Bruce more or less than a thousand career receptions. Oh,
this is close, this is close. I want to say
he's in the I guess we're going to go. Oh
more more about a thousand, twenty cheats. Yes, what about
(38:45):
somebody else from the Rams? Tory Holt in his NFL
career more or less gotta be more right. I'm actually
because I counted during the course of his career because
there was this is is he going to get to
a thousand yards? I actually count and catches thousand catches.
I actually counted about eighty drops that he should have
had to get him to that thousand yard mark, which
(39:06):
you put him around like, I'm gonna go less than
a thousand? Are you serious? Oh my god, I'm gonna
get to get out of here. Come on, Steve exactly
nine eight Katie drops? Is the applause light just constantly
on to They just stay on and we can't We
just turn up the It's it's running on a loop
(39:28):
with you two. What about Andre Johnson the Giants looking
forward to that? A few weeks ago we brought that up,
the biography on him coming out Andre Johnson the greatest
Houston Texans ever more or less than a thousand career reception. Um,
(39:48):
I'm gonna say less, Jonas I actually said when he
his final I actually told people, I said, I wouldn't
be surprised if he never caught any more than one
thousand and sixty two balls in his career and actually said,
oh my god, didn't get correct. I was gonna say,
what's how many catches? Is? Let's just say we got
(40:09):
one wrong? What would have that sounded like Steve? It
would have been me sign first us and then a second,
a buzzer clean sweep. This is game time on the
Duck Got Leap Show. Today's show brought to you by
(40:29):

Boom and that's Dustin Johnson off the tea at Riviera. Man,
(40:51):
what a weekend for golf in l A Rory speed,
Dustin Phil and of course Tiger Woods. Great way to
put an exclamation points on the West Coast swing on
the PGA Tour. Of course, it's also a big weekend
in Los Angeles because Jonas it is NBA All Star. Yeah,
(41:14):
the festivity is getting underway. Tomorrow, of course, All Stars
Saturday featuring the Dunk Competition, three Point Shootout, and the
Skills Challenge, and then Sunday it's the All Star Game.
No East versus West instead it's Team Lebron going up
against Team Steph. But there's still some work to be done. Tonight,
two games in the NBA wraps it up with the
Lakers taking on the Timberwolves. Of course, that's the game
(41:36):
that's gonna be on t NT where they put my
Bucks going up against the Nuggets, which is a very
good game on League Past. It's a good thing that
we've got lead past. Checkout tonight's game at the Bradley Center. Yeah,
this is a wild weekend if you are a gentleman
out there and um, your your lady and all her
friends decided to go clubbing in Hollywood this weekend, and uh,
(41:58):
if maybe she's not so quick to return your calls,
let's just say she's probably got tickets to the All
Star Game. Okay, let's just say she met somebody and
then got got hooked up with some tickets in the
All Star Game. I'm just gonna put it put that
out there like that. There there is going to be
a yeah, gosh, two hour period of just stop party
(42:19):
in l A. And that's that's what we have got
this weekend with the All Star Break, all Star weekend,
and it was yesterday, i think on j C the
Brick with Tom Looney, they were talking about the biggest
party is going to be Monday morning at a strip
club in l A. Because that's what everything is done,
but a Monday morning party. I think it was TMZ
(42:40):
reporting that that's the going to be the biggest party
of the entire weekend. It's after the All Star Game
coming up on Monday. I'm off Monday, Dan, that's my
day off. I'll be there. I'll be bussing tables, but
I'll still be there, Dan. That counts. The All Star
Break is here, and when the break finally hits with
everyone on break, you're gonna have Toronto what top the
East and the Houston ro gets a top of the
(43:00):
Western Conference. As crazy as that is to say, that's
what we've got. The Boston Celtics led the Eastern Conference
for much of the first part of the NBA season. However,
the end a slide of three games and the last
two living losses at home to the Cavaliers and Clippers
have made some to wonder what could be going on
in Boston. Earlier on the Doug Gottlieb Show, we had
(43:23):
Rick Campbell of NBA TV to talk about what is
going on with the Boston Celtics right now. Boston is
not beating Cleveland. I mean, we saw it play out
on Faul pierced and wasn't there. He makes them that
much better, But they got beat down in the first
game of the Stula Cavalier team. That was a statement
to me. That was a competence shrinker for Boston. That
(43:44):
was a competence sweller for Cleveland. Um, but Boston is fatigued,
they're out of gas. That from Rick Kamla earlier, maybe
like the Warriors are, that Boston just needs this break
more than anyone else. And we were talking about it
last night, we were filling in here on Fox Sports
Trading and just kind of making the same point that listen,
like this team, they seem tired, they seem a little
(44:05):
worn out, Like nobody needs the All Star break more
than they do. They've taken a trip to London, They've
played more games than anybody else their schedule. Early on
in the season was crazy, like they just need to
get away, and so to judge, to judge that team
who is already without their second best player based on
how they've stumbled to the finite, to the to the
(44:26):
halfway point, as we call at the All Star break,
it's just not a fair representation. Like nobody judges you
on your performance at work on a Friday afternoon. Like
if you work at nine to five on a Friday afternoon,
you're checked out anyways, You're tired from the week, and
nobody judges you on that. It's when you come back
to work on a Monday, are you still hungover? Okay,
because if you're still hungover, then we got a whole
(44:47):
another conversation. I just think to judge them based on
this and and based on what they've looked like the
past couple of weeks, I just I don't think it's
a realistic judgment. I think it's what has changed is
I I had no doubt that Boston is one of
the top teams in the East and they should be,
considering they were at the top for the majority of
the season, and we thought Toronto was legit. But then
(45:09):
after that, we just didn't know about the Cavaliers and
in Washington and Milwaukee really haven't put anything together to
make you think that they could challenge for those top spots.
So as you sit there and look at the landscape
of the Eastern Conference, you're thinking, oh, maybe it is
a two team race, and if Cleveland is involved, they're
gonna have to go through Toronto and Boston to get
to the NBA Finals, and that may be too much
(45:30):
to handle. What was just so striking from last Sunday
and Rick talked about it was just how much Cleveland
has changed. And I just go back I Jonice, I
do believe that the Isaiah's hot, like Isaiah's Thomas in
the roundabout way, his doomed for the rest of the
Eastern Conference. It was the first part of the year
that he that he that he damaged the Cleveland Cavaliers.
(45:53):
But now with him out, it made the Cavaliers evaluate
who they are, reevaluate who they are then also brought
them together to be a team that is actually fighting
for something. Everybody that came in maybe at the start
of the season of their own agendas, with all the
different personalities and different types of players that they had.
Now they're all together Jordan Clarkson is happy, Larry Nance
(46:16):
is playing on a winning team. Rodney Hood can showcase
playing next to Lebron and be one of the best
players in the NBA. And now you've got Lebron and
Kevin Love and the holdovers in Tristan Thompson, guys who
have been criticized. They're all down together. And I know
it's just a week, but I think in the last thing,
the lasting effects of Isaiah Thomas and Cleveland will actually
be hurtful to the rest of the Eastern Conference because
(46:38):
it gave the Calfs something to play for, and that's
just the biggest the Cavalier no matter what the problems
Boston's gonna have. And I don't think you're gonna have
a playoff game, Jonas where the Cavaliers beat Boston by
twenty game in and game out. They're gonna be closer matchups.
But at least it made Cleveland care. And I think
that the the the biggest hope of the rest of
the Eastern Conferences that maybe Cleveland just didn't care going
into the playoffs and where I'll like, they were what
(47:00):
ten years ago when they lost to the Celtics in
the Eastern Semis and I think that's changed because of
Isaiah Toms. Lebron James is number two and minutes played
per game in the NBA, it's number two in the league,
it's thirty three. I think the conversation starts to become
a real conversation towards the end of the year because
what ended up happening. Yeah, you've you've brought in some
(47:21):
new talent, and you brought in some guys that are
happy to be there and some guys that don't carry
the ego that guys like maybe Dwyane Wade or Derrick
Rose or especially Isaiah Thomas had when they came into
this situation. But who knows when Kevin Love comes back.
Who knows how he performs with this new unit when
he comes back. But what you did by bringing in
all this B level talent to Lebron James is you've
(47:42):
put the onus on him that unless he's playing well,
unless he's playing and playing a lot within this lineup,
then they got no shot. Because if you think you're
gonna roll out Lebron James at thirty minutes a game
with George Hill and Larry Nance to try and compete
against Golden State. You're gonna they might. They might cancel
the series after three games because they'll lose by eight
d each game. Like the I just think that this conversation,
(48:05):
I want to see this version of Lebron James having
to play this many minutes and having to be this
ball dominant, unlike other years before where he had help
like Kyrie and Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade and and
Kevin Love and all these guys. I want to see
how he looks towards the end of the year. I
look at it and I just I think that the
Warriors are the best team in the NBA, and whether
(48:25):
they get knocked off by the Rockets or not, there's
a very good chance that the Western Conference winner is
going to win the NBA title. I just think this
has changed everything for the East. It's made it more interesting. Yeah,
and and the East is what's turned around and flipped
what we thought could be a new NBA final, something
that I have actually been hoping for because I feel calvs.
(48:45):
Warriors is something that is just the Warriors are a
better team and when they end up facing off, whether
it's this Cavs team or the one that they had
two weeks ago and we were looking at it. I
just thought the storyline was played out. I want to
see new Blood, whether it be Boston, whether or be
Houston in the NBA Finals. I would like to see
that matchup more than anything else. But this has just
put more into question of what's happening in the East
(49:07):
and has now made Cleveland legit again. And I think
with that also then brings up the possibility. Okay, what
about if Lebron does stay, even though Dan Gilbert may
have to pay you know, millions upon millions and millions
of dollars in a luxury tax, if that's something that
he would want to do, is it worth it? Would
he be willing to do that? And is it worth
(49:28):
for Lebron staying? And I think that this latest run
has at least also then turned that conversation a little
because that was one feeling that Lebron was going to leave.
And now if he has fun over these last couple
of months with this corps of guys, maybe they convinced
Paul George to come over and make some other moves
and then then they have a team. That conversation has
changed and and if Lebron James pulls this off and
(49:51):
wins an NBA title with this roster and everything they've
gone through this year. For everybody that that that has
called him out for always needing help and constantly demanding
s for teams and all of that, you can please
step away from the microphone and you can close your
mouth for quite some time because he will have done
it with and and everyone's all, what a talented roster
(50:11):
they've got on their bench. Stop. Okay, there's not a
general manager in the league that would take George Hill
and Larry Nance over Kyrie Irving and Chris Bosh and
Dwayne with Like nobody, nobody anywhere would do that. So
if you're if you're in the category of Lebron, I
want to see him do it when he doesn't have
all this super team help. Then here you go, and
so far, so good. I just I just want to
(50:33):
see how the wear and tear on him towards the
end of the year. I would have loved to have
seen if they because there was a lot of talk
even leading up to the season that then maybe they
were in on Jordan Crawford or could be interested in
lou Williams. If you just had a volume score next
to Lebron that could handle some of that load. I'm
not sure if Rodney Hood's gonna explode for thirty or
five points a game. I don't know if Jordan Clarkson
(50:54):
is going to but I think that would have changed
the dynamic and maybe taken a little off of Lebron's shoulders.
But that's question that will never know. You mentioned the
Boston Celtics coming out after the All Star break, like
showing up for work on a Monday. They're at Detroit
home against the Knicks and then hosting Memphis on Monday.
So three games in four days. But that should tell
(51:15):
you a little three games that the Celtics I believe
should win. I think something we need to do because
it's not been done. Later on in the show, Dan,
who's better Lebron or aren't Michael Jordan's Okay, that's we're
into unique radio here on Fox Boy. We'll go ahead
and pencil that in. That'll be a wan that can
do two segments. Yeah, yeah, he can do that at
what what six o five eastern? Yeah, six oh five eastern.
(51:38):
That will come up an hour four on February thirty. Second.
We will get into that who's better Michael Butt Lebron, Yeah, Lebron.

somebody should be to blame for the current state of
an entire sport. We'll tell you who that is next

Buyer sitting in having some fun. You can always reach
us on Twitter. I'm at Dan Buyer on Fox. You
can get Jonas at the Jonas Knocks. That's what uh.
Lucas Campbell tweeted and saying Knox's favorite debate topic on
his highly rated overnight weekend show is better all time athletes.
(52:41):
M j R. Brady like that discussion done in three
weeks straight. I mean, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Dan,
I like it. I like it a lot. Today at
Riviera Country Club just down the street from us, it's
the first round of the Genesis Sopen. Joining us to
talk all about golf and what a star studdared event
it is is the editor of of Channel dot Com,
Jay Coffin. Hey, Jay, going to talk to you again.
(53:02):
How are you? Let's uh, I want you to rank
and I think we know the obvious, but this field
is pretty amazing. Okay, with the storylines that we've got
coming into Riviera, rank of these five players most important
storylines Tiger, Rory Jordan's Phil and Dustin Johnson, the storylines
(53:23):
playing out this week, what's one to five one being
the biggest storyline of all? Okay, so, um, Tiger, Tiger, Tiger,
Tiger and Tiger there it is the answer. But but look,
Tiger's obviously one. I think you could go and put well,
(53:46):
this is a good problem to have, is it not.
Let's let's let's start with that, all right. It's a
good It's a good problem to have. These five stories.
All right, that's a that's a writer's dream that anybody's
talking about it and writing about it, and that's a
dream to have. I do think it's probably dj number
two just because he was the defending champion. He's number
one in the world. He may not still may not
be have as much star power as Tiger, and he's
(54:11):
a man beat out there every week, would still around
three that he still still before. I kind of think
that he stunk it up last week at at a Pebble,
so he's got a little more pressure than you would
think this week to play well. And then what was
the fifth one? Jordan's always you know, the fact that
(54:33):
he would be the fifth story this week, Um, you know,
any and he would be the fifth story. And he
didn't play particularly well last week at Pebble Beach either.
He's got to get it going. But he's still got
a lot of events before augustin National, so he's not
putting as well. But I don't really worry about him
so much. Uh So there we know all these guys,
they're athletes, that they're very competitive and they want to win,
(54:53):
and it's you know, it's it's every man for himself.
But do you feel like these players acknowledge that having
Tiger back is good for business and the more that
he's back, the more it's better for them. Yeah, I do,
and I and I mean I could, I could tell.
And look, I was down at the Bahamas humble not
so humble Brack November and December with his first event back,
(55:15):
and that was I mean, those guys were legitimately giddy
that he was back. And I and I'm not saying
it's it's that level right now, but but back then
his first time back, they were legitimately giddy. These guys
did grow up idolizing tiger Woods, are right, Not like
Phil Nicholson, Ernie Els and v J. Singh and these
(55:35):
guys that were that were rivals. These guys grew up
and and wanted to dominate golf because they saw tiger
Woods dominate golf. And let's be honest, there was a
period last year where we were not super sure, not
sure at least that we were ever gonna see Tiger
Woods competitively on a golf course. Ever. Again, right, you
had all the Memorial Day issues with the d U
(55:57):
I you had everything, just the back issues, just not
feeling well there was a prime. You didn't know if
you were ever going to see him. So now we're
seeing him and people are thrilled. I mean people are
legitimately thrilled and diddy that this guy is playing pain free,
has a little bit more of a peppidius step and
a smiling one on the golf course. I hadn't seen
him smiling a long time on a golf course. Jay
(56:18):
Coffin on the Golf Channel joining us here on Fox
Sports Radio. You can find him on Twitter at Jay
Coffin g C. His round was the kaleidoscope of colors
today on that scorecard, positives and negatives from Tiger's first
aid teen at Riviera today. What did you see? Yeah,
the well, the negative still is the driving. You know,
a couple of weeks ago at Tory Pines in San Diego,
(56:38):
down the road, it was. It was a pismal. It
just was not good. And today was not as good either.
And I started off with that birdie on ten and
went to eleven his second hole, and lost it and
made double bog and it was like, oh my god,
It's like, how how have you not? You're not gonna
fix it that quickly in a couple of weeks. But
how are we not? How's Tiger Woods the best player
(57:00):
of good generation? And probably ever, how was he not
finding a way to just scrape it around and get
in the fairway just a little bit easier. Now he
did settle down a little bit, So I'm still concerned
about that driver. That that would be the negative, and
it's gonna be a negative for me until he finds
a way to hit it in the middle of the fairway,
all right. The positive still was the putting. I mean,
putting was good. He missed a couple of makeuple things.
(57:22):
Everybody's going to do that, but he still made five birdies.
I mean, look, look, that's that's pretty good. I I
thought I thought he was gonna be a little jumpy
with the short game when he's coming back, you know,
and I was gonna focus his his his practice efforts
so much on having it hitting it long and straight,
that straight, that his short game wasn't gonna be so good.
And the short game was pretty good today, made a
(57:43):
lot of key potts, made a couple of real big
par saves, made a long birdie putt on number one,
and so that was really really a positive. Jay I
don't know if there's an answer, let alone a right
answer to this question. But I want to ask you,
because I was thinking about this. Do you think what
could go Off have done when Tiger was away? What
could they have done to try and build this sport
(58:05):
and try and make make these guys bigger stars on
a global level that they didn't do? If if you
could change one thing their approach and how they marketed
some of these players so they weren't so relying on
Tiger Woods return with a bad back, a guy who
acknowledged a short time ago he had a bucket next
to his bed to go to the bathroom. In the
fact that they need him to come back to generate
this kind of buzz, what could they have done differently
(58:27):
in his absence? Well, that's it's really it's a real
good one, and I I don't really know, but look,
I do look at it this way is as I
think it. Also, I think your question sort of speaks
to the difference between what do you what do you
like most in your sport? Do you like one dominating sport,
one dominating star, whereas who's clearly the best and everybody's
(58:49):
trying to chase him? Or do you like parody, which
is a lot of different guys that are that are
capable of winning in some big names, but nobody who's
going to be able to do things that Tiger Woods did.
So I don't think that they did a bad job,
um you know. I mean, look, we still we've gotten
to know Jordan's speech a lot better the last couple
of years because Tiger Woods hasn't been around. Ricky Fowler
(59:11):
roaring sort of a little bit off and on, Dustin
Johnson's kind of done his thing. Justin Rose has had
a little little bit of success, so we've had we've
had a chance to get to know some of these guys.
More that that that Tiger Woods likely would have sucked
the life out of out of a room and sucked
the air out of the golf course the last few years,
even with these guys around. So I think it does
(59:32):
go I and I think it also proves just how
dominant and how great Tiger would. You know, you don't
know how good it is until he's gone. I mean
that kind of thing. Like these guys, Jordan's speech is
a terrific player. He does know how good he is.
And Dustin Johnson, those guys are anywhere near doing anything
that Tiger Woods did on some of his worst years.
(59:54):
So I don't think they did a bad job marketing
these guys. I just think it's sort of apples and
oranges to guy who's winning major's hand over fifth tournament.
Guys were really, really good and just are not capable
of doing what Tiger did. Jay Coffin joining us here
on Fox Sports Radio, He's Jonas Knocks. I'm Dan Buyer,
and I think that lends to your rankings, as you said,
(01:00:16):
I mean, when majors come around, we know these five
players are in the field, but it's still a US Open,
or it's a Master's and it's a British Open, and
if one of those players elevates to the leaderboard, then
we are fixated on them. But this is the perfect example.
I mean, I can't think of a time j where
all five of my starred players on my PGA Tour
app we're in that notables category at the top of
(01:00:38):
the leaderboard. Usually you'll get about two because maybe Jordan
and Phil are in the field, or Dustin and Phil
and however it is. But that's what this week is
just so rare to me because it really does reflect
on how big Tiger is. And then the other weeks
when we want to boost up Jordan speed. I mean,
we put them at five at the rankings this week.
It's just totally amazing and how rare Tiger. You know,
(01:00:59):
the the Tiger Woods effect is. Yeah, George Jordan number
one on just about any weeks that plays, except when
it's weeks that are with Tiger Woods. Yeah, you know,
maybe maybe at the Masters, and that's but you know what,
I think George fine with that because he knows that
the guy who's number one on that ranking put a
hell of a lot of money in his pocket for
doing what he did over the last one of years.
(01:01:20):
Let's let's wrap up with this. Tiger's at plus one
right now, he's five back of the lead, but tied
for seventy second I believe right now, current leader board,
and there's a lot of guys who still need to play.
What does he need to do tomorrow to to play
the weekend at Riviera? Just something under par and with
a little bit of momentum. You know, I said this
earlier in the week, and this is this kind of
where we're at with Tiger, which is, you know, look
(01:01:43):
good and bad. But you know what he did a
couple of weeks ago at Tory Pines. He looked like
he wasn't going to make it, and then he just
grinded and grinded and grinded and found a way to
make the cut and will end up finishing, you know,
somewhere around And I think we're gonna see that too.
He's just not there. Yeah, everything's not there. He's's gonna
do something great, but he's gonna do something terribly, and
(01:02:03):
he's gonna grind until the very end. So I think something,
you know, a shot on your par, you know, I
think he's gonna have to shoot the under par in
order to play the weekend. Something around that one under,
two under would be trific, just a little bit of momentum.
You know, He's playing late on Friday, So here we
are again. It's gonna be Tiger Wooden late on Friday
in l A, grinding around the cut and you're gonna
do it? Is he not? I think that's gonna happen.
(01:02:24):
I do think he has enough in them to get
it done and play the weekend. He's the editor of
golf Channel dot com. Find him on Twitter at Jay
Coffin g C. Jay Coffin, Thanks Jay for the time
for the rest of the weekend. Alright, boys, take care.
Thank you. Great to talk to Jay. Catch up on
what's happening at River. It's really rare to get these
five guys, and to do it Jonas on a classic
(01:02:44):
course like this that is a non major or a
non World Golf Championship. It just doesn't happen often at all.
Dan Buyer, Jonas knocking for Doug gottliebire Fox Sports Radio.
Get Dan on Twitter, at Dan Buyer on Fox you
can give me at the Jonas knocks. Coming up next, though,
near is a quarterback in the NFL that could save
an entire city, no joke. We'll explain who that is next.
(01:03:05):
But first, for all the latest from around the world
of sports. Steve Well, let's start with the golf in
l A. The three Americans that are co leaders who
are at four under par one stroke advantage. That includes
Sam Saunders, who's winding down on the final hole of
his first round. Four under for those guys, one under
for Phil Mickelson has shot a first round seventy at Riviera.
(01:03:26):
Dustin Johnson has one under par through his first three holes.
Jordan's speech is even par through four holes Tiger Woods
one over par. He shot seventy two. As for the NBA,
two games tonight, including the last one before the All
Star Break, Minnesota hosting the Lakers at nine pm Eastern Time.
The Timberwolves will raise a banner to honor the late
Flip Saunders before the game, former coach and team president.
(01:03:49):
There Lakers nine and nineteen on the road, Minnesota at
home and impressive twenty three and seven this season. Before that,
it's Denver at Milwaukee and then the All Star Break
for a full week until next Thursday night. The NBA
All Star Weekend will be in l A starting tomorrow,
and among those in the Celebrity Game on Friday Bubba
Watson as well Jamie Fox coming and others, and they're
(01:04:10):
supposed to be a four point line in the second
half of that exhibition. New Orleans postponed game against Indiana
has been rescheduled for March twenty one. The game was
not played about a week ago due to a leak
in the roof the Dallas Mavericks. First owner Don Carter
died last night. He was eighty four. The mats were
an expansion team in nineteen eighty and wide receiver Larry
Fitzgerald will return for a fifteenth season with the cardinalspec
(01:04:33):
to you. Here's the thing, thanks, Steve. Here's the thing
about Bubba Watson. Very hairy arms. He does, yeah, like
I gotta do mine Like, yeah, I gotta do minor.
I gotta go three three setting on my beard, trimmor.
He's got, you know, bare arms, not the rights of
(01:04:55):
bear arms. He's just has bare arms. There's a lot
of hair. So when he's wearing that tank top in
the Celebrity Game tomorrow, you're gonna notice because yeah, he's
just got hairy arms. And he's and they're kind of
like long arms, so it's almost like an orang of
tank or he's got these really long arms and and
they're very hairy. Yeah, Bubba Watson was going to skip
the end of Riviera if he was going to miss
(01:05:16):
the Celebrity Game. But whether it's gonna be perfect. He's
got the late tea time today, the early tea time tomorrow,
as shouldn't make it in time. As Steven Live to
he he has ever gotten liquored up at like a bar,
like say he missed the cut and he's like, you know,
I'm just gonna hang out here. I don't even know
if that's how he talks, but I'll just go with it.
And like you think, like his buddies all get around
and just like see if they can put his arms
and dreadlocks. I think they do that asking for a friend. Yeah,
(01:05:42):
I'm not sure. Just French braid the arm as as
you will, like you want to get the sharpie's out
and drawn his face. Yeah, let's let's give his arm.
We can do with his arm hair. Hey, sometimes people
just have a lot of arm hair, right, I not have.
I don't have a lot of arm here. So can
you ever trim your arms? I mean either, I was
(01:06:05):
gonna say, when you're talking about that setting up three
setting interesting? Yeah, No, I never I don't think Bubba
Watson has either. Just a little food for thought. All right,
this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. You can find a
sou on Twitter at Harry Arms. No, just kidding. He's
Dan Buyer. The Cleveland Browns are. They're in the driver's
(01:06:27):
seat of something. They have the first overall pick of
the NFL draft coming up at the end of April
by the way complete. Side note, NFL Draft could be
going to some new locations Jonas. Oh yeah, a little
Denver in Las Vegas. Everybody, Yeah, you know that means
Dan We yeah weed shout at you pot chunkies. Which
(01:06:47):
which first round draft pick right after he gets selected
is going to be smoking weed and kicking a hackey
sack around? You want to take bets on? Oh gosh, man,
who could that be? Who could All I know is
this Denver should take the old bron and go and
the snorting that he's doing maybe just a cloud of
you know, that's what could be another all of that.
You know, maybe maybe the broncoes a little loopy in
(01:07:10):
the new logo. You could have that. But the NFL
Draft is after going to Dallas this year, could be
had to do Denver and then laws of everybody wants
it now because it's such a bit like the drafted,
because like we were talking about a little bit yesterday
to where it's the only event that really combines the
two top sports in the country. Like, regardless of anybody's
love for the NBA, I love the NBA, love talking
(01:07:30):
about the NBA. College football is the second most popular
sport in the country. I mean, that's just a fact.
And it's the only event in which both worlds are combined.
So it's the best of the top two worlds as
far as we go on popularity in the world of sports,
and it sells hope, and everybody's included. Like there's no
playoff format to where you've got sixteen teams in the
(01:07:52):
playoff and the other sixteen teams have to sit and
watch and maybe you're not as interested. Every team's got
something to play for, Like like every team feels like
they're a part of the big event. I think cities
around the country have all bought in on it. So
Dallas will host it this spring. But it's the Browns
who are top the draft board, picking number one overall,
and then they have the fourth overall selection following their
(01:08:12):
trade last year, so the Cleveland Browns with the Houston Texans.
So the Cleveland Browns are sitting there at one and
number four, but they also could be in the market
for a free agent quarterback. Kirk Cousins the free agent
to be tweeting out Cooper and I are interested in
hearing where the best spot is for us. We have
no idea yet and that's Kirk Cousins with his son
(01:08:34):
so Brown's left tackle. Joe Thomas tweets, I hear Cleveland
is nice this time of year, that is, if you'd
like to have a statue Sunday someday, and then the
tweets started going in and shooting down Joe Thomas's maybe
points of Hey, if you win in Cleveland, they'll they'll
treat like a hero forever, saying that you're gonna get
more money, you're gonna get more history in Cleveland, and
(01:08:57):
if you go somewhere else, you'll just be another quarterback.
But if you in Cleveland, there is something different about it.
And I think his points are very fair. And if
you look at the landscape of where Kirk Cousins could go,
I'm thinking that Cleveland is not bad of an option
considering if you have Denver with no offensive line, the Jets,
and maybe the media circus that you would get with
(01:09:19):
New York. If you're Kirk Cousins, Cleveland is not that
bad and bad of an option considering the problems they've
had at quarterback. Their offensive line is decent, and now
with two picks in the top four, you could also
get some additional help there. I I I understand where
Joe Thomas is going with that. You know, it would
be cool, um if you like could fly, like if
(01:09:39):
you're a human being and you could fly just to
you yourself, not in a plane, but if you had
the ability to fly like like a lot of birds.
So here's what we should do. Then let's all go
off to the top of the roof and let's see
see who flies first. I guess what's gonna happen. Nobody's
going anywhere. So if Kirk Cousins goes to Cleveland, yeah,
you could get a statue erected and you could be
the first guy to ever bring a Super Bowl there.
I guess what's gonna happen. You're not flying, Hey, you're
(01:10:00):
gonna meet your doom at the bottom of when you
see that street coming at you about a hundred miles
an hour. It's he can. You could try and sell
oh Man to be the first guy to do it there,
but those stories are so rare. You know how many
guys whiffed trying to be the first guy to bring
a World Series to Chicago in a hundred years or
the first Like you can go around the history of
(01:10:21):
sports like so many people have whiffed on this. If
I'm Kirk Cousins, unless they give me just an astronomical
number to sign on not going to Cleveland, just not,
I'm not doing it. Where we then where would the
why would the Jets be a better option or why
would Denver be a better option? Or do you think
there's another team that he should go to. I think
if if Kirk Cousins it looks at this and says,
(01:10:42):
this is the prime of my career. Okay, I don't
want to grow with anybody anymore. I I I sort
of tried to do that in Washington, but I want
to go somebody in the prime of my career who's
closer to competing. I would say that probably that Denver is,
without a doubt, closer to competing. Um, I would say
that Jets are closer to competing. I just think there's
(01:11:02):
other options out there for him that are better than Cleveland. Now,
if it if it's a situation where he's like he's
dead set on on I want to to really help
build this thing, and I want to have, you know,
some bring back some pride to the city of Cleveland.
Go right ahead, man, But that's why I just think
Cleveland's move is going to be either to draft a
quarterback high and bringing a venture. I don't like Denver.
(01:11:23):
I'm not high at Denver at all. There's reports that
they're gonna keep Da Marius Thomas city Manuel Sanders to
try to entice Kirk Cousins there with good luck throwing
from your back because that offensive line is still having
problems and you don't have a running game. The Jets
actually think of those three teams are probably a team
that is going to fare the best. But you also
have the media circus of being a quarterback in New York.
(01:11:44):
In Cleveland, the expectations are so darn low that I
think there could be something there. And I also saw
something at Super Bowl Week, and I paid attention to
this when we were broadcasting at the Mall of America
in Minnesota. Right behind us, Joe Thomas and Andrew Hawkins
were doing their Amahawk podcast for The Uninterrupted, and they
were two tables away, and Kirk Cousins was making his
(01:12:06):
rounds through the tables and at one point he was
looking at Joe Thomas to try to get his attention
or just to see if Joe Thomas noticed him walking
through and you could see that as Kirk Cousins was
walking forward, following, you know, his people, to the next interview,
he was looking at Joe Thomas to see if Joe
(01:12:27):
Thomas would recognize him to say hi. And I'm thinking
to myself, that is very interesting that Kirk Cousins maybe
had an eye for Joe Thomas because he has an
eye for the Cleveland Browns. I'm just saying it was
just something that I observed during Super Bowl Week. And
when you look at hey, you could draft se Kwon
Barkley at four overall. You could draft another defender. You
(01:12:50):
could draft Bradley chub As another defensive end opposite Miles Garrett.
You could draft Manka Fitzpatrick. There are pieces there. And
remember they addressed their offensive line last year in free agency.
If Joe Thomas wants to come back, he's there. There
are things that Cleveland could do that if Kirk Cousins
was behind that offensive line, they'd be a lot better.
And if they had a better running game, Hey, who knows.
(01:13:10):
I I don't think it's out of the possibility, and
I think that Joe Thomas's points are at least well
taken of even if you make it to the playoffs, Jonas,
considering the string that they have had. Kelly Holkim was
the last quarterback to lead Cleveland Kelly Holmes to a
playoff game in two thousand four when they lost to
the Pittsburgh Steelers. Like like you, you just vaults to
the Bernie Kozar level of Cleveland quarterbacks go to the
(01:13:34):
playoffs now in Cleveland, Listen, the first guy to do
it is going to be immortalized, like the first guy
to ever. And you know it's like like theo Epstein
in Boston and in Chicago. I mean, those are two
big time cities that he's never gonna have to pay
for a drink. Like we we've all heard those stories.
I just man if if I'm in the prime of
my career and and I'm dead set on going to
a situation that that I'm willing to bet on is
(01:13:55):
gonna work out better, like what you know, Arizona. Jacksonville
is another situation. I mean, there's no guarantees there they're
gonna bring. I know that he signed, but and maybe
Bordles to some people who's earned the opportunity to want
to be there and be the starter next year. But
if if Jacksonville thinks Kirk Cousins is an upgrade, I mean,
if I'm Kirk Cousins to play with that defense, because yeah,
I think Jacksonville would top all of them. I think
(01:14:17):
that they're legitimate questions about Arizona, even with Larry Fitzgerald
coming back today and David Johnson just coming back from
the wrist injury. Sure you've got those pieces there, but
I'm not sure how good Arizona is all around. I
don't believe in Denver, and I know that the Jets
were very serviceable with Josh McCowen, but I'm not sure
on their long term success in New York, even though
I think it's a better situation than Denver. Jacksonville trumps
(01:14:38):
all of them, Cleveland isn't as bad, and another team
to watch out for that could be making a move
for Kirk Cousins because of their shaky quarterback situation New
England and England interesting. I'm just saying, you know, but
that's just gonna leave it out there. Dan all right,
Jonas Knocks stand by are in for Doug Gottlieb here
Fox Sports Radio. You can get Dan on Twitter at
(01:15:00):
Dan Buyer on Fox Get Me at the Jonas Knox
coming up next though, um, we are going to hear
comments and you might deem them as very controversial, but
comments that some people at this network particularly will not
agree with. Find out what we're talking about next year
on FSR Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. He's
(01:15:21):
Jonas Knox, I'm Dan Buyer. Love your feedback. On Twitter,
you can get Jonas at the Jonas Knocks. I'm at
Dan Buyer on Fox. You can always listen to the
show live at Fox Sports Radio dot Com, syrius XM
channel eight three, or the I Heart Radio app. Doug
is not in today because Doug was busy working on
The Herd on Fox Sports Radio. So why don't we
(01:15:44):
hear from Doug in a game that we like to play?
And now it was earlier today as Doug was in
for Colin cow heard that Doug was talking about the
Cleveland Cavaliers and not a player that they have, but
a player that they don't have, in DeAndre Jordan's. I
think right now people are celebrating, Hey, no DeAndre Jordans,
(01:16:05):
look how good they're playing. It's the moves you don't
make that are as important as the movies. You do make.
Sounds great and I think in the short term is real.
Here's the problem with it. DeAndre actually makes you better
against the Golden State Warriors. He protects the rim. One
of the things that makes the Warriors great is that
they have They make a ton of lamps. You know.
(01:16:25):
They're not like the war like the Rockets. They're not
a midrange team. There are layups, easy twos, you know,
and and kick out to shoot threes. So I actually
think that this is a miss. It's unfortunate that they
didn't get the guy that they wanted to get. It's
fortunate that they were able to make do anyway though.
There I think the Calves in the short term are
(01:16:45):
very happy with what they ended up with. They would
have had a better shot of beating the Golden State
Warriors had they added DeAndre Jordan's When you look at
the trade that didn't go down, Walds reported at there
was a deal that would have said Jay Crowder, Channing,
fry Aman, Schumppert and Cleveland's first round pick to the
(01:17:06):
Clippers for Jordan, but the Clippers wanted another team to
take Schumpert and the draft pick as part of the
deal and that's why it broke down my initial thinking. Yeah,
Doug's right, but I thought the teams that were trying
to chase Cleveland or chase Boston or maybe even Boston
themselves if if they wanted, but like Washington was in
on DeAndre Jordan, Milwaukee was in on DeAndre Jordan's. Those
(01:17:29):
are the teams that truly needed DeAndre Jordan to try
to make some noise in the East. I'm more I'm
more critical of those teams for not getting DeAndre Jordan
than what the Cavaliers in missing out in DeAndre Jordans
Do they do you? And again, I'm just this is
a conspiracy theory. If you want to call it that,
that's fine, But I wonder how much of this, because
I know that this has happened before. Do you think
(01:17:50):
that maybe part of it was also Doc Rivers not
wanting to help Lebron James beat the Celtics. I think
there's any of that because it's that seems like you're
getting a lot for a guy who you don't know
if he's gonna be there long term, and why he
wouldn't go to Cleveland like he wants to help them
out yeah, like, like, would he really want to help
(01:18:12):
Lebron James beat the Celtics because he's still got a
great relationship with the Celtics. Him and Danny Angel still close.
And we know that there's a history in the League
of people helping out other people, whether it's Jerry West
in Memphis helping out the Lakers with the Paulkosal trade,
Danny Ainge being helped out by Kevin McHale and the
Kevin Garnett Garnett trade. I wonder if there was some
(01:18:33):
of that too, I would think, and if I was
in Doc Rivers shoes, the more the Cavaliers are, the
more the Celtics don't go to the NBA Finals, the
better I look. That's trust in history. Like if the
more times that Brad Stevens and the Celtics maybe come
up shore in the Eastern Conference finals or the Calves
keep on going that it looks like, hey, we went
to two finals, we won a championship and one year
(01:18:54):
went to a Game seven and another That's how I
would look at it. It is. It was interesting to
see the Paul Pierce Love on Sunday with Rondo, a
member of the Pelicans, sitting next to the head coach
of the Clipperers, and and like there was like I
understand that when it comes down to supporting a guy
(01:19:15):
that you played with and that are friends with, it
just was it was just a little weird that it
was so comfortable, you know what I mean. And Danny
Ainge is next to Doctors. They're sitting there watching, so
I can I can see where you're going with that.
I just if I was Doc, I wouldn't want the
Celtics to not win as much because makes my time
there better. And again, I don't have any any sourcing
to that, or it was just a thought. I wonder
(01:19:37):
how much because it seems like you're getting quite a
haul back for for DeAndre Jordan's now to Doug's point.
Long term, we'll see how this works out. I think
I think people are getting so caught up in the
moment with how much better? Like, if anything, this just
goes to show you how poorly Cleveland was playing. That
they had George Hill and Larry Nance and Jordan Clarkson,
and all of a sudden, the thinking is they're a
(01:19:58):
much better team. You look at some of the guy
is that we're on the team two weeks ago that
aren't on there. Now, what have we got like a
couple of Hall of famers, Like you can make a
case Derrick Rose is maybe a Hall of Famer, that
Dwyane Wade's maybe a Hall of Famer. Like the idea
that I know that in the moment they are they
are better, But I'm kind of a Doug in the
let's see how this really plays out because a lot
(01:20:20):
of these guys have never even played in playoff games before,
so that's a whole another guy I look at. I
look at take Milwaukee for example. In Milwaukee, so much
has talked about their length and whether it be with
Joannice or whether it be with Thu Maker or John Henson,
and and the pieces that they can put out there
and defend you with. They don't have a rim protector.
(01:20:42):
They've got guys with long arms that maybe you can
get in the passing lanes. But maybe DeAndre Jordan would
have helped in that aspect. The Cavaliers are so darned
bad on defense that I know having DeAndre Jordans just
standing in front of the hoop would have helped. But
I do wonder how much it really would have helped.
I mean, if they're DeAndre Jordan's, you know, tense spots
better and defensive efficiency. Yeah, yeah, it was worth it,
(01:21:03):
but they stink. Dan. Wellce you know we are brought
to you by tax Layer. What if you could get
up to one thousand dollars in as little as forty
eight hours with tax Layer, Well, you can introducing refund
now only from tax Layer E file your taxes get
up to one thousand dollars in as little as forty
eight hours with no upfront fees. Visit tax layer dot
com for details. And again if those if that trade
(01:21:24):
goes through, then we don't know the full pieces that
the Cavaliers would get and who knows if they would
have blown out the Celtics and one in Oklahoma City
with DeAndre Jordan's, Well it's okay, Jay crowd ended up
in Salt Lake and Saint l A rolling along on
this Thursday on the NFL quarterback pool has just gotten
a little man, not money wise, but now we can
(01:21:46):
put officially a new name in. Can those quarterbacks looking
for work? Can I guess, Dan, you can take a guess.
Let me take a guess. Tom Brady got cut, didn't he?
That is not the not the case. It was not
Tom Brady. However, the news just in from Adam Schefter
of ESPN that A. J. McCarron of the Cincinnati Bengals
(01:22:09):
one is grievance and is now considered an unrestricted free agent.
And this now looks we we were just talking about
Kirk Cousins a little while ago, and Joe Thomas is
pushed to have Kirk Cousins come to Cleveland. When you
start looking at what's available in the draft and what's
available in free agency, Jonas, you now have a bunch
(01:22:31):
of quarterback situations that have become very very intriguing around
the NFL. And in fact, Jonas, you can make an
argument there are more quarterbacks available than actual starting jobs
in the National Football League When you consider the let's
just say five quarterbacks from the NFL draft in Josh
(01:22:52):
Rose and Sam Donald, Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield, and Lamar Jackson.
Throw in a J. McCarron now along with I don't
know Case Keenum or any of the Vikings quarterbacks and
Kirk Cousins. When you look at the availability and the
teams that are looking for starting quarterbacks, there are more
quarterbacks available than there are teams to go to in
(01:23:13):
the National Football League and not to mention too powerhouses
that are on the open market. Um, Johnny Manzel and
Mike Lennon will be available. So if anybody wants to
make that those mistakes again, you can sign right up
for There will be plenty of offers. I'm sure another
reason Johnny Manzel needs to sign with the CFL because
he just dropped a notch in any teams possible next quarterback.
(01:23:37):
Because now a J McCarron is in that conversation, and
I think a J. Mccaren whether you think he's good
or not, will be valued in this free agent market
for sure. And that's when the conversation turned to Kirk Cousins.
When Alex Smith got his got signed a deal that
hasn't been made official yet. But then you saw Jimmy
Garoppolo get his money, everybody raced to Twitter and started posting, Oh, man,
(01:24:01):
Kirk Cousins is thrilled with this. Kirk Cousin is gonna
get paid now. Man Kirk Cousins is going to get
a fat paycheck because of what Jimmy Garoppolo just signed for. No,
I don't you know what the fact that the Eagles
won a Super Bowl, the backup quarterback, the fact that
you've got other options to your disposal, and you've got
what has been told to us for a couple of
(01:24:23):
years now, a loaded draft class. More teams have options
than Kirk Cousins does at this point, and I don't
know how if I'm his agent, I'm Kirk Cousin Lissen.
He's gonna make a good amount and he's gonna get paid,
and he already has. But let's not pretend like all
of a sudden he's going to break the bank because
he's the only thing available. There are a lot of
options out there for teams. I have made a list
(01:24:45):
of the and we put the I don't know, nine
or ten quarterbacks down to get the quarterbacks that we're
listing as available A J. Mccare and Kirk Cousins, Josh Rosen,
Sam Donald, Josh ellen Baker, Mayfield, Nick Foles, case Keenum
in the mar Jackson. The only reason you can put
Foals in there is because we don't know his status
going with the Philadelphia Eagles. But even if we took
him out, because he's still under contract, there would be
(01:25:07):
eight quarterbacks Jonas for what I view as seven jobs
in the National Football League. You have the Cardinals looking
for a quarterback, the Broncos, Bills, Jets, Browns, maybe those Vikings.
And you also still love the Jacksonville Jaguars out there
that could be looking for an upgrade over Blake Portals.
(01:25:27):
But there could be a scenario where you could be
a quarterback and if you are drafted, and let's say,
I don't know if you are Josh Allen, your hopes
of going in and starting for a team right away
may not be realistic. And you know what else it
does is it throws other teams into the mix, like
the Chargers, the Steelers, the Baltimore Ravens, the New York Giants,
(01:25:48):
maybe the New Orleans Saints as teams who have veteran
quarterbacks that may want to start to look ahead. You
can even put your Patriots in there as a team
that could be interested. But these teams now maybe having
to make the decisions because of the value of a quarterback,
whether it be free agency or draftwise, is now available. Yeah,
and I you know, we joke about the Mike Lennon situation,
but when I look at a j McCarron. I see
(01:26:10):
similar to a Mike Lennon scenario, to where you're not
really sure whether or not he's good. First of all,
a J. McCarron has never had extended work as a starter,
so no, there, it's it's kind of an unknown. He's
not going to get a big time five year contract
from anybody. But I can see a team saying, all right,
what's our better option. Do we sign Kirk Cousins for
let's say, you know, uh, six years, a hundred thirty
(01:26:33):
million or whatever, whatever the hell the price tag is.
I'm getting him and you Darvish mixed up. There's so
much money flying around in sports. I have no idea
what's happening. But let's just say somebody looks in and
they're kind of weighing their options. They say, all right,
do we want to pay Kirk Cousins the five or
six years at X amount of dollars? Or would we
rather bring in a J. McCarron for a lot cheaper
(01:26:54):
and less of a commitment and then draft a guy
that we can develop under him. And there's gonna be
a lot of teams out there that would rather go
with the ladder than pay her Cousins that kind of money,
because when you pay and sink that kind of money
into one position, all of a sudden, you start lacking
in other areas. I just think the conversation is more.
There's more of a conversation and and it's not such
(01:27:15):
a slam dunk that Kirk Cousins is going to be
just the the wealthiest paid quarterback of all time this offseason.
The only thing against Jimmy Garoppolo getting that twenty seven
and a half million dollars hand newally was the limited
amount of games that he played. But in the games
that he played where he's seven to no, in my mind,
he has shown that he is going to be the
future quarterback of the San Francisco forty Niners. So now
(01:27:36):
that twenty seven and a half million dollars is such
an interesting number, Jonas because of the simple fact of
what you talked about with longevity and what would you
rather do if you were a team, do you take
a short term deal if you're really trying to figure
out an answer and looking for your long term fifteen
year quarterback that that some teams are when you're when
you're Jimmy Garoppolo and you're getting twenty seven and a
(01:27:59):
half million dollars. I think there are a lot more
reasons why he should get twenty seven and a half
million than why he shouldn't. And when you look at
Kirk Cousins, there may be more reasons on why he
shouldn't get twenty seven and a half million than rather
what he should. One of the things that Cousins has
on his side, and I think Cousins has been a
good quarterback, but Cousins hasn't been great, and there's more
(01:28:20):
informations on him, and that is actually a drawback in
this scenario. It's a lot of times maybe why guys
won't go to the combine, you know, because they don't
want to. They don't want to show everything on what
they could get. And with Cousins situation, we just know
more about him. It's the Cardel Jones syndrome. If it
had Cardel Jones come out after the one year of
Ohio State when he won the Big Ten Championship, the semifinal,
(01:28:42):
and the national championship with that sort of arm, he
would have been drafted probably late first round, just on
pure raw talent alone and would have made much more money.
But the fact is he went back for another year
and he exposed all his flaws to where now people
could nit pick and try and find stuff wrong with
him that they couldn't have done if he had come
out with a small sample size. You're right, Kirk Cousins.
(01:29:03):
Everybody knows. I mean, he's been playing on a franchise
tag for basically one year contracts for a couple of years.
So any flaw that he has is only going to
get magnified this move, by this ruling by the NFL
allowing it J mccarren to become an unrestricted free agent.
I also think hurts Nick Foles in a in a
way where where if the or the Eagles, if they
wanted to trade him to a team that didn't want
(01:29:25):
to pay Kirk Cousins or maybe wasn't a top the draft,
that Nick Foles wouldn't be able to just come right
in and a trade wouldn't be able to work out.
Now there's another option for that team, and you just
it's it's a tough market out there now if you're
you're you're an NFL team, I mean if you're a quarterback,
because they're just not as many spots as there once
(01:29:46):
were Did you see what Peter King floated out there?
Peter King of MMQB dot Com said, Um, unless a
team were to jump up and offer Philadelphia two first
round draft picks for Nick Foles, I don't see them
getting rid of them. Okay, Um, if a team offers
Philadelphia to first round draft picks for Nick Foles, I'll
get a sex change on the air. Okay, that's never
(01:30:07):
gonna happen. That is never ever, ever gonna happen. That's
why I didn't understand the conversation all of a market
market and send that out to Cold Dump Takes or
whatever that lame website is, Cold Ice, Cold Icy Hot
Takes or whatever they're called. Where does the Knox play this?
Like that? When the conversation started with Nick Foles, and
(01:30:27):
everybody's like, ol, what are they gonna do with Nick Foles?
You could probably get a ton back for Nick Foles.
Why do they need to do anything with him? You
have no idea what Carson wants is going to be
like when he returns, Like, if if I'm Philadelphia, I'm
holding on him for dear life, Like I'm not. I'm
not getting rid of Nick Foles at this point, you
don't have to trade him, So why is everybody talking
about him? Going? Okay, listen, we're talking about two first
(01:30:48):
round picks for a team that relies into sex change.
And let's get it right now. If I listen, if
a team, if I'm Philadelphia and a team offered me
to first round pick for Nick Foles, you know, even
if Carson Wentz isn't ready until week ten, I still
feel like my defense is good. I would take that
deal and I would run to the Listen, I agreed.
(01:31:13):
If somebody does that, I totally agree. I just don't
see anyway anybody's offering to first round pick for Nick Foles.
I just don't see it. The the the market has
now changed, and with a J. McCarron available, it could
make teams like the Cardinals, like the Broncos, like the
Bills or Jets re evaluate how they want to address
their quarterback position. I think that Cleveland and the Giants
(01:31:36):
being one too. I think Cleveland is only in play
with Kirk Cousins. I don't think that any of the
other options they have. They've tried to cut corners previously,
and I know that Cleveland was looking at a J.
McCarron and wanted him bad. But that was a different regime.
This is now John Dorsey and this isn't Sashi Brown
and the other people running the Cleveland Browns. So it's
(01:31:58):
a different situation. And I think with that fan base Jonas,
even with all those years of two first round picks
that they had, it was the quarterback that was always
taken seconds or the quarterback that was pushed back. And
now I think, just for pure optics, even if you
wanted to get your quarterback at four, I think it's
a bad look knowing that you have number one overall,
(01:32:18):
I think you need to take a quarterback or sein
Kirk Cousins. I don't think the other quarterbacks free agent wise,
like mccaron or if somebody left from Minnesota, would be
vilable in Cleveland. Man, I love offseason NFL talk. God, Hey,
if you're Pittsburgh and Ben Roethlisberger keeps on talking about, Hey,
I may retire. I don't know. I don't know what
I'm going to do. And you you know, Josh Allen
(01:32:40):
falls or Lamar Jackson falls in the draft. Same thing
with the Chargers. I mean you're looking at different things.
There's just there's a lot that that has just changed
with just the simple name of a J. Mccaron because
there aren't enough spots for the number of quarterbacks that
are out there. What do you think Brett Musburger asked
to say about it? You see that lovely free agent
out there? And then, all right, Dan Buyer Jonas knocks

founder of pregame dot Com and host a Straight out
of Vegas here on Fox Sports Radio. R J Bell
joins us here on fs R. Hey, r J, how
you doing today? Hey guys, happy to be on with you.
Let's listen. We we had news about Larry Fitzgerald returning
(01:35:13):
next year. We now found a J. Mccaren is going
to be an unrestricted free agent, So why not start
with a quarterback that isn't in the NFL? Are there
any Vegas odds on Johnny Manziel. That that's what we
want to know, whether it be signing to the Hamilton
Tiger Cats. Is there any action we can get on
Johnny Manziel as he kind of I don't know, announced
this comeback earlier this week on Good Morning America. You know, politically,
(01:35:37):
people will say we get the representatives we deserve, right
because we vote for him, or we get the restaurants
we deserve in the town because we vote with our
pocket books. Well, radio hosts dictate the kind of odds
that Vegas likes to put out there based on the
questions national hosts like you guys ask. So whenever someone says, oh,
(01:35:59):
john Annie Manziel, he's not even in the league. We
shouldn't talk about him. Well, you guys asked, that's why
we have these odds. But man, there's actually Johnny Manziel
odds out there. There are that that's the short answer.
Right In a way, I'm almost saying, listen, don't blame me,
but they're out there, and right now you can actually
(01:36:20):
and again, these are online, right Vegas does it typically
do odds like this, but online it's pretty much your
imagination is your only limitation. And Manzel has a real
chance to be on a roster but he's not favored,
so you can bet yes, he'll be on a roster
week one. Won seventy no is mine is two fifty.
(01:36:43):
So if you do the math, it's a sixty six
percent chance no, but a thirty four percent chance Manziel
is on an NFL roster Week one next year. R J.
What's the one bet you've made on something that you
look back on and go, I can't believe I actually
bet on that, Like, not not that was a bad pick,
but just the the event itself, whether it's Johnny Manziel,
(01:37:04):
a coin flip in the Super Bowl. What's a one
bet you look back on and go I can't believe
I did that. Well, you know, I'll be honest with you.
I'm a big fan of admitting to the degree you're
a degenerate, and none a degenerate like doing it illegal.
You know, I'm just talking a gambling djan as we
(01:37:24):
call it. So I take pride in it. I often
talk about, you know, I've been in Vegas twenty years.
This actually January, it was twenty years. And you know,
so when I moved here, I was twenty seven, right,
young single. I spent a few nights. I can't lie
in strip clubs, right, gentleman clubs. Let's call and sometimes
(01:37:44):
you like experimitt Ryana. Let's say you walk out in
its uh seven thirty in the morning, the sun's coming up,
you see people jogging going by, you see people driving
on their way to work. Now, there's two ways you
can react to that. One is feel shame, one is
under what's going on with your life? The others to say, yeah,
this is this is right, not not all the time,
(01:38:07):
and this this is right. So I would say the
one bet I love to make is the Nathan's hot Dog.
Oh yeah, okay, it's around July you know, obviously July Ford.
And when I do my weekly hits, and most of
my hits I do every week football season or not,
we'll spend like ten minutes handicapping the hot dog contest
and as a degenerate, I love it. R J and
(01:38:30):
Vegas joining us here are j Bell here on Fox
Sports Radio. You can find him on Twitter at r
J and Vegas. Um from uh, I don't know from
one hot dog to another. Let's go to Lebron James
of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Okay, because the Cleveland Cavaliers have
had quite a week in the NBA after the trade
deadline a week ago today, how have things changed for
them in the Eastern Conference with their odds after their
(01:38:52):
win against Boston and their win against Oklahoma City just
a few days ago. Big upgrade, big, big big so
even a cool days before the trading deadline, it was
a three way tie in the East odds wise to
make the championship around to you know, win the East Toronto, Cleveland, Boston.
(01:39:15):
We're all plus two hundreds, so a hundred wins you
two hundred now some trades now two very impressive one
especially impressive win. And where are we even money right now,
even money on the Calves and about four to one
(01:39:35):
or so on Toronto and Boston. So huge difference. And
let me pose to you guys on paper, and I'm
gonna ask a couple of quick questions on paper the
players that the Calves had versus the players they got,
And let's forget these two games for a minute. How
would you rate the those sets of players? Um, I
(01:39:57):
would say the former set were better, bigger games, better careers. Okay,
but yeah, but but obviously Michael Jordan would be the
best name, but we wouldn't want him on a team.
So considering the reality of February two thousand eighteen, is
it fair to say maybe even talent wise, Um? Yeahs.
As far as youth, I would say definitely. Youth is
on their side for sure. Yeah. Okay, So here's the
(01:40:19):
second question is wasn't the basic premise of the Calves
offseason decision to sign who they sign was that, hey,
the regular season doesn't matter, four third seed or fourth seed.
You know, we'll find it's in the playoffs. So having
a Dwayne Wade having experience is what wins because the
(01:40:40):
advantage of youth, oftentimes in the regular season is you
can play hard every game or most games, right, But
in the playoffs, teams play hard every game. So in
a weird way, those teams without a higher ceiling, the
ones that are consistent during the regular season, tend to
be overrated in the playoffs, and the teams that can
turn it on like a switch are usually underrated coming
(01:41:02):
in the playoffs because they play hard every game in
the playoffs. So my point would be if the players
are about even on paper, and the basic premise in
the in the n b A is that experience is
more important than youth in the playoffs. Yeah, you might
buy some wins in the regular season with this trade
because they're more energized. You're gonna listen to Lebron more.
(01:41:23):
But is it the basic premise that these are the
type of players that don't perform in the postseason, and
thus how have the calves chanced to win in the
playoffs increased? Is there a team out there, because I
was talking to people during the NFL season who we're saying,
you know, sort of a dark horse team is maybe Jacksonville,
you know, making a run because of their defensive borders,
could just sort of play you know, halfway decent football.
(01:41:46):
Is there a team in the NBA that you look
at as being, or maybe a couple of teams, a
good value pick to an outside chance at winning the title.
Or is it still just such a top heavy league
that nobody takes these other team serious. I think it's
not only a top heavy league. And I mean think
about this. We mentioned Michael Jordan as in the pantheon
(01:42:07):
at the head of the table the best odds the
Bulls ever had ever starting a season or even money,
so it was the Bulls versus the field pretty much right,
and Golden States started this year like minus one. I mean,
you know, so much much better odds than even money.
So the idea, we've never seen a team this relatively
(01:42:30):
dominant as Golden States. On one hand, that makes how
deep do you really want to go? Right? We're questioning
do the Calves have a chance? Right? Well, maybe Houston, Yeah,
obviously that's seventh D eight team. Not as much. But
there's another reason, and this is a macro ongoing reason.
There's no sport that the better team wins more often
in a playoff series than the NBA. First off, it's
(01:42:53):
a series, right, So one and done. Anyone and done
sport has more luck, right because you only gotta win
the one instead of four out seven. But amongst the baseball, hockey,
and basketball, those three sports that have a series, here's
why the NBA has the better team winning more often.
What's the most extreme thing that can happen in a
baseball game. Well, let's say a three run homer or
(01:43:16):
a grand slam. But let's say two outs, two guys on.
If they hit a home run, it's three runs, if
they don't, it's zero runs. Well, your average number of
runs in a in a game is nine, so literally,
do you strike that guy out or not? Can be
like one third of the scoring. Well, what can happen
in a hockey match? Right? Or a game is one
(01:43:37):
puck is one of five or one of six, Right,
it's lucky or not. Well, in basketball, lucky is one
three pointer, which is three out of two hundred points.
So really, because luck plays such a small role in
the NBA relative to the other sports, and because there's
a seven game series, you see the better teams win
in the NBA more often in the playoffs than any
(01:43:57):
other sport. Okay, I want to keep it with hoops,
but I want to shift to college basketball. R J.
Bell joining us here on Fox Sports Radio. He's Jonas Knocks.
I'm Dan Buyers. Weren't for Doug today because we have
no idea who the best team in college basketball? Is
Virginia lost and there's still the number one team in
the Associated Press Bowl. How wide open right now is
it for college hoops? And who does Vegas like as
(01:44:19):
cutting down the nets at the end of the n
C Double A tournament. Great question. This is a weird
answer because on one hand, I think between the top six, seven, eight, ten,
even twelve teams, it is not much difference, right they
had the big reveal and the sixteen teams and a
(01:44:40):
team like Oklahoma, for example, number sixteen in the reveal
the committee, let's call it, and in our Vegas rankings
and up at prem dot com we do our Vegas
rankings every Friday for college basketball. Right now, a little
preview of the Friday release, we have Oklahoma number thirty.
So to some degree, the committee, you know, follow the money,
(01:45:03):
right Patrey Young and everything. Him being a four seed
is gonna be a lot more interesting than an eighth
seed that's gonna get knocked out in the second round.
But beyond kind of the you know, let's call it
the um financial considerations of the tournament, there's just a
lot of teams that are very similar right in quality. Now,
here's what I know for sure, though there's a ceiling.
(01:45:25):
A fourth seed or better has won the tournament every
year but one in the modern era. So in a
weird way, we're all gonna be talking about who you know,
who's the sixty four you know team or last team
in who's playing the playing games. But in truth, if
you're not a top four seed, your odds of winning
it are almost zero. But if you are a top
(01:45:46):
four seed, I think there's so much parody this year
that that many, if not all, sixteen of those teams
have a mighty good chance. He's the CEO and founder
of pregame dot Com and the host is straight out
of Vegas. Here on Fox Sports Radio, he's r J Bell.
Thanks r J, Hey, my pleasure, guys, thank you great
information there in college basketball. I have no clue. I'm
(01:46:06):
not you know his take on r J Bell and
where Vegas looks at Oklahoma. I can totally see Trey
Young has not been great as of late. To say
the least. The fact is is the top three teams
in the country lost last week, and they're like, well,
Virginia did. Virginia lost a tough overtime game to Virginia Tech.
Let's put them in at number one. It's wide opening.
(01:46:27):
I'd say that Virginia isn't good. That's not the case.
It just you don't know who's the best. Well, that's
why I've been saying for years now that the team,
the best team in the n c A tournament every
year is a team that cuts down the next That's
a very very good point. You heard it there from
at the Jonas not by the way. You can get
me at hoops where you can find me, not at
(01:46:48):
Harry Arms. That's yeah, that's old dreadlock dreadlock fore arm.
What Bubba Bubba Watson. Yes, I was gonna say, Bubba McDowell.
Jesus God, alright, Dan Buyer, Jonas Knox in for Doug
gott leieb here on Fox Sports the NFL Defensive Backs,
next probat, McDonell Houston Oilers, I select Merton Hanks with
(01:47:14):
we should do that, but we'll do like July and
we don't want to talk baseball let's just like redraft
to NFL DBS all time perfect. I got arch Aletta,
Do not take Archiletta alright. Coming up next though, there's
a quarterback who's very very upset with someone very upset
with someone in their commentary on their talent. Okay, so
that is coming up next. We'll have that for year
on Fox Sports Radio. But for all the latest from
(01:47:36):
around the world of sports, Stevie d in your DB's draft,
I'll take Marla McCree last on a little paid full playoffs.
There's a story there, you know, the backstory of the
A J. McCarn thing you mentioned to start. He won
his grievance against the Bengals. Started the hour with this,
he now gets credit for the season that you're the
Bengals had stashed him on the non football injury list,
(01:47:56):
so he wasn't accruing service time. He says, no football,
I was working out for you when I got hurt.
So now he gets credit for that service time, which
means he can now be an unrestricted free agent when
the new league year starts next month. And also he
gets back pay from Big Win for quarterback A J. McCarron,
and he could really catch in in this offseason as well,
(01:48:17):
again multiple reports saying he has won his grievance against
the Bengals. The Raiders will not retain kicker Sebastian Janikowski.
He'll be a free agent. Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will
return for a fifteenth season with the Cardinals. A reminder,
FS one Tonight will carry the dual races from Daytona
and the Truck Series tomorrow and Saturday's ex Affinity Race.
The Golf p g A Tour stop is in l
(01:48:39):
A this weekend. Phil Nicholson with a one under seventy
in his first round at four under par. The four
co leaders include American Tony Finales. About midway through his
first round, Tiger Woods is tied for seventy ninth place
after a one over seventy two. Dustin Johnson has had
a bad start. He's still on the front nine. He's
three overpar through his first seven holes. Jordan's speech is
(01:49:01):
even par through eight. College basketball among the games tonight,
fifth rank Cincinnati, winners of sixteen straight playing at Houston
seven pm East. During the Houston Cougars tied for second
place in the American Conference with Wichtona State back to you.
I did appreciate uh, Steve putting Tony Finow score ahead
of Tiger Woods today. Do you have him in a pool?
Is that the reason why we start at the top,
(01:49:23):
Dan in the top fifty? Oh, come on, come on,
Eldrick Woods is the is the example? As as Jake
often said, I tried to rank the five. He said one,
Tiger two, Tiger three, and Phil Nicholson might be golfing
on Saturday. By the way, if if Fox Sports one
ever does a golf show, first of all, Dan Buyers
should host it. Okay, so I'm putting that out there.
(01:49:45):
Dan Buyers should be your host people at Fox Sports one.
But the name about you I don't like. I don't
want to rub it in. And that's that's really the
goal here. I want to make other people feel like
they know something about golf. And this is tied into
so many other golfers. I already know the name of
the show. Do you want to know the name of
the show? Sure? Speed for yourself? Oh, not to get up?
(01:50:07):
That's pretty good, yea the bell audience. Oh that's that's
very good. Speeds for yourself. I love it. Uh, this
is the Doug Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Radio,
He's Jonas Knocks. I'm Dan Buyer. You can always reach
us on Twitter, I'm right Dan Buyer. On Fox get
Jonas at the Jonas Knocks, and you can always listen
(01:50:28):
live at Fox Sports Radio dot Com, the I Heart
Radio app, and also Sirius XM and Channel eight three.
We mentioned the news and Steve did as well about
a J. McCarron now becoming an unrestricted free agent. This
also opens things up for the quarterbacks that are going
to be available, specifically, how many quarterbacks are there going
to be Jonas two compared to how many teams are
(01:50:49):
actually looking for quarterbacks. Well, one of the guys that's
available in the I guess process that's gonna be available
in the draft but also could find a home on
a team is Baker mayfew Old and Baker Mayfield is
one of the guys who seems to be being picked
apart for his skills and taking notes to what others
(01:51:09):
are saying about him, including our good friend Bucky Brooks,
who is a friend of ours here on Fox Sports
Radio hosted Jose with Bucky and comes on as an
insider from the NFL Network but Baker Mayfield didn't take
too kindly to a report or a scouting report Bucky
Brooks had on the Oklahoma quarterback. It's I don't like,
why did these guys get so sensitive to this? You know,
(01:51:30):
like I can understand it from the standpoint of you
really wanna Like Bucky Brooks is giving his evaluation. There
are there are are plenty of people to do mock
drafts and evaluations, and there are plenty of people that
get it wrong every single year. Like if Bucky Brooks
thinks something about Baker Mayfield, why is he so concerned
about it? Man? Like, shouldn't he be getting ready for
the combine? Like? Who cares? Like it doesn't And Bucky
(01:51:53):
Brooks knows what he's talking about. Buckie Brooks is really
good at this thing. But I'm sure Bucky Brooks has
made some some evaluations of players that that have not
worked out exactly as as he thought it would. This
is just part of the process. If if Baker Mayfield
can't handle this part of it, the hell is he
gonna do if he gets drafted by the Jets with
that media market? Good God. Executive producer Robert Gara gives
(01:52:15):
us the update that Baker Mayfield deleted his tweets he
did now. Bucky Brooks did a critique during his NFL
dot com column breaking down each quarterback and one of
the concerns he said about Baker Mayfield, you know, his size,
a little bit of attitude problem. Baker saw it, responded
to the tweet saying, you also forgotten on my resume
that I'm a winner just like Deshaun Watson. And I
(01:52:36):
guess that he didn't like the way the backlash was
coming down, so we deleted it. And Bucky Brooks has
responded several times on Twitter, but no response from Baker.
This is the other thing about the draft process is
you can't leave certain things out when each team is
so paranoid about making the wrong decision, because not only
does it does it cost them a bad pick, it
(01:52:59):
cost them their job. Like like you have got you
have got to put absolutely everything into account of finding
the guy that you want to take with your first
overall pick. And that's what they're looking at here. So
everything Baker Mayfield has done comes under scrutiny. And guess
what I think. He leads the college football quarterbacks and
(01:53:20):
crotch grabs you know, and I mean in terms of
terms of heyth wise, he's not as tall as say
Sam Donald or Josh Allen. So when guys are looking
for tall quarterbacks, and I hate to say it, but
I think if you went through the history, taller quarterbacks
probably had more success than shorter quarterbacks. Sure we have
(01:53:40):
Russell Wilson and Drew Brees, but I think the numbers
would pair out that maybe taller guys would end up
being more more successful in the National Football So all
of these critiques are just a part of the plan.
You just have to be as you said, like, if
you go to New York and this stuff is bothering you,
how's it actually gonna be when it comes down to
two real stuff in your play weekend and week out?
And I got news for you. His reaction to Bucky
(01:54:02):
Brooks's commentary is would be more alarming to an NFL
front office than Bucky Brooks's commentary. Okay, the fact that
he handled it this way people would have more of
an issue with. And then whatever Bucky Brooks said. And
Bucky Brooks, like, like I mentioned, he's really really good.
Him and Daniel Jeremiah are fantastic. Mike Mayock. I love
all those guys like I. I think it's fascinating. I
love the draft. I love seeing how they evaluate these guys.
(01:54:24):
They study so much film and they go over all
this stuff. But this is part of it, man, Like,
you're going to do some things that are going to
rub people the wrong way. Josh Rosen is going to
get all sorts of of of of criticisms about his behavior,
and they think he's arrogant and he's got interests outside
of football, and he always speaks his mind. To some people,
that's okay. To other people, they don't like it. To
(01:54:47):
some people, they're bothered that that Baker Mayfield grabbed his
crotch and yelled f you. Two other people they say, no,
I like that fiery competitiveness to each his own. That's
the way it goes when I look at how things
are done with. You know, let's say a job critique,
and your boss may give you a critique that is
just through the roof, and at the end they may say, um,
(01:55:10):
you know, it probably could work on I don't know,
keeping his desk area a little bit cleaner. All of
us people, what are you kidding? Like, Oh, this is
you know, like they said ten good things about you,
but the one thing, because you have to, they end
up focusing on it. That's what Baker may It's why
I never I always find this funny, how as as
(01:55:30):
people in sports media, like I never get offended to
somebody's criticism of me on Twitter or somebody that listens
that doesn't like me, because if I'm being critical of athletes,
I would be such a hypocrite to also turn around
to take offense to somebody being critical of me, Like
it's just it's the way it goes. Like you're never
gonna you're never gonna please everybody, but to to to
(01:55:52):
take offense and to buy into Bucky Brooks, who's giving
a fair evaluation. He's not taking insults at him, he's
not taking pot shots at him. Like if Baker Mayfield
does get to a big market, like do you know
what it's gonna be like in New York? Man like
that eats people alive. Look at Gino Smith. Gino Smith
has spent his entire career in New York as geo.
How smooth that's gone? Okay? He got his job broken
(01:56:15):
by a guy who got catfished. I mean on man ah,
the the life and times of being an NFL draft
prospect Baker Mayfield. Uh, I guess finding things out the
hard way ended up deleting the tweets as Robert mentioned.
But the fact is is still if you're gonna react,
maybe maybe wait a day or weight at least fifteen
minutes before responding. Dan Buyer Jonas Knox in for Doug
(01:56:37):
gottlie Pierre Fox Sports Radio. Get Dan on Twitter at
Dan Buyer on Fox. You can get me at the
Jonas Knox coming up next though, We've got some pressing
issues literally pressing issues in the Gottlave Show on Fox
Sports Radio. He's Jonas Knox. I'm Dan Buyer. Thanks to
Jay Coffin, Rick Kamela, r J. Balford joining us today
giving us the latest on what's happening in golf, NBA,
(01:56:59):
the NFL, l Vegas and again the report saying that
Las Vegas could be getting an NFL draft soon Denver
as well, that report coming out that draft is moving around.
That's for sure good for them. Yeah, they don't need
New York anymore. Like Chicago got a two years in
a row, Philly got it. Where won't get it in?
Like where do you think is not going to get
(01:57:20):
an NFL draft. Like, what city in the NFL would
you say is not going to get the draft? Why
do you have to pick on the people of Buffalo.
And I've just let's say, I think that the NFL
wants to stay away from the Niagara Falls in the
back draft. You know, come on, man, just saying I
think you know that it's the weather as well, even
in late April. You never know. That's that's just my truth.
(01:57:43):
Good point, l A for sure. But l A right
now has Steve to Sega and the press. The press,
Steve gets just caught up of what's happening in the
world of sports and we get to react to it.
Hello Steve, Hello once again. And that's not some rumor,
by the way about future draft sites. It's an official
(01:58:04):
list of finalists from the NFL five cities to host
either next year's draft or in And yes, Vegas is
on the list. I think Cleveland and Canton has a
joint bid a combined entry, but reps for each site
will offer presentations before the final selections are made at
the NFL Spring meetings in May. Who are the other
UH finalists on the list. Denver Kansas City in Nashville.
(01:58:27):
So I'm surprised at San Diego wouldn't be on there
because sorry, yeah, they probably have some old facility they
can host the draft in that leaks when it rains.
They're gonna just redo the sports arena. At the sports arena,
they just gotta kick the bums out if they're gonna
redo old drafts in San Diego will be all offense.
(01:58:48):
This year's draft is going to be in Arlington, Texas.
And of course you may have read the article yesterday
that now that Fox TV has the Thursday night TV package,
Fox is going to be carrying the NFL network coverage
over air TV of NFL Draft in prime time. You
don't have to go to cable it. Yeah, I love
I think the network gratings are going to be so
(01:59:08):
intriguing since there seemed to be such a shift to
cable with our big sport events sporting events. And I
think you're the one to bring up that this may
be also a message to ESPN. Yeah, maybe let's let's
keep the politics out of this now. Again, I don't
want to get a bunch of tweets because I don't
even want to go down the political route, but there
could be something to that as well too. Did you
know that for the draft this year, they're gonna be
(01:59:30):
sending my weekend overnight showren Now that's all com doing
the show live with guests. Probably yeah from a bar.
I completely made that up. That's all lie Onto the
Steelers news. The team owner says this week they are
ditching the throwback uniforms. The bumblebee are done. They're being
(01:59:52):
replaced with new throwback jerseys. They did not specify what
they're going to Already. People are nominating the Steelers so
called bat Man look from the nineteen sixties. If you've
seen old NFL films, they have yellow across the top
shoulder to shoulder, whether it's a white or black jersey,
called batman uniforms because it resembles a bit of a
cape at the top. But they haven't mentioned specifically what
(02:00:15):
their jersey they'll have. I think they should go back
to the nine nineties block numbering, Dan, your thoughts on
the block numbering, none of this curvature stuff. What do
you think that I could see a nice I think
a good nineteen seventies with just all of the pizzazz.
I know, it's mostly stayed the same. But yeah, just uh,
I don't know the trim of the lacking trim. I'm
(02:00:35):
not even sure the difference. You're not You weren't a
fan of the bumble beach jerseys. I hated Green Bay
going with the Navy blue. Do you remember when packing
Denver's throwbacks where the striped socks and the brown the
broad and gold Steelers was from the nineteen thirties with
the horizontal stripes. The thing that annoys me the most
(02:00:56):
is that they had leather helmets, So that means that
you're just putting a round helmet on. It doesn't And listen,
they can't go to those in Denver and the New
York Jets and the New England Patriots do the right thing.
Be adults here and go back to your eighties slash
nineties logos and jerseys. I'm sick of this, man, I'm
sick of what the Jets are doing. Like it's like
(02:01:16):
they're trying to bring back the sixties. I know, you
want a Super Bowl in the sixties, but you're also
gonna wear pantyhose because Joe name It did it too.
How about the Patriots when they started with the blue
jerseys and Drew Bledsoe. Before they got to the current
there was a more royal blue. And again the NFL
won't let you change helmets because they said that changing
helmets throughout the years, you're more pro throughout the year,
(02:01:36):
you're more more prone to concussions. Easy for me to say,
Look at the Rams last year. They had a mix
and match of jerseys and helmets, the helmet with the white.
You can't change helmet colors, that's what the NFL, because
you're more prone to concussions. The Buccaneers can't go to
the throwbacks because they have to keep the the chrome
helmet because they won't make allow them to change helmets.
(02:01:59):
The hell does a cool helmet have to do with
the inside helmet? And the thought that the helmets don't
break during the year, you may need a new one,
Like the guys go through helmets all like, Hey, I've
had the same pair of shoes for three years and listen,
we're not getting you new ones. We don't want you
to hurt your feet. Okay, well these are already broken out.
Go to your throwback shoes. The voice of college football,
(02:02:20):
Keith Jackson, could be honored in Pasadena next year. The
Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation is working on a plan to
raise funds over the next twelve months to build a
statue in honor of the late announcer Keith Jackson, and
they would have a statue of him around the Rose Bowl.
How much is this gonna cost? They're hoping to raise
four hundred thousand dollars for a month. A lot of
(02:02:42):
money's honor walked into that one gets the press. Well,
let me tell you about what a money pit. Well
about four of my goal. Yeah, yeah, I just wanted
to tell you. Listen. As conditions on the field change, Dan,
(02:03:04):
so can your insurance needs. That's why you got to
