Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to The Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Doug Gottlieb and the crew in for Dan The Dan
dan Patrick Show, Fox Sports Tradio. Good morning to you.
I hope you're having a great summer. For many people
like my son Hayes can't be listened to the show
because he's got his first day of school high school
kicking off. A lot of kids getting dropped off at
their universities. We discussed this like last week, like, I

(00:26):
don't know, maybe I'm maybe my parents were old school,
but I don't remember anybody taking me to school. Just
bye bye. Felt like that old Saturday Night Live skit,
bye bye bye, bye byebye. But this is the Dan
Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
Okay.

Speaker 4 (00:43):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Taylor Swip was on with the Kelsey's On podcast, So
there's a.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Lot to it.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Dan, I thought you brought up a bunch of interesting points,
but maybe the most interesting was who does this serve?

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Right?

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Like, who does it serve? What's the what is the point?
Why is she doing this? And what do you think
that the answer is?

Speaker 4 (01:03):
I was.

Speaker 5 (01:03):
I watched the almost entirety of the two minute, the
two hour episode. I towards the end I just kind
of fast forward a little bit. But it was on
for two hours last night, and even at the end
of that, Doug I wondered, all, right, did Taylor do
this to bring her fans into the football world? Was
it to get football fans to appreciate Taylor Swift?

Speaker 1 (01:25):
Where?

Speaker 5 (01:26):
What was the reason behind this? Ultimately, I think it
shook down to as we talked it out. I think
it was probably a safe space for Taylor to say
what she wanted to say and to reveal her album
and to do it in a neat way with the
person that she loves. So ultimately, maybe it was just
to serve themselves. But record numbers watching it and millions

(01:49):
of people when it went live yesterday afternoon or I
think evening in some parts of the country. But I
had wondered of what was the reason for it even
after watching the two hours and Alty, I think it
was just good for Travis and Taylor.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Yeah, I I I think that's what it was. I
think it was it gives America a look at sort
of America's couple, right and Jay sdu It took him
probably six to nine months to go to come off
of the It's a fake relationship argument. And to anybody

(02:23):
who thought it was then you watch you watched yesterday,
you can watch now online and be like, not, okay,
that works. You know that there that's a real thing.
I do think that oftentimes we think there's a strategy involved.
It's a lot like here's the parallel I'm gonna drive.

(02:44):
I have a really good friend who worked with the
president in his first term, and his thing was anybody
who thinks that when he comes out with some new
plan that there's that they've they've workshopped it or whatever,
that there's a whole plan in place, Like, that's not
how he operates. It's just not Oh, it's this master

(03:06):
playing with the economy like now not really just has
an idea. Somebody proposes an idea, thinks it's a good idea,
it gets committed to, it goes and does it, even
if it may contradict an idea he had a couple
weeks ago. And I think that's what's at play here
with the Kelseys is she probably always wanted to do
it right. And everybody's always on, why don't you ever do

(03:27):
that podcast? Why don't you ever do a podcast? Like
we only see you guys taking pictures in a club
or a concert or a football game. Like a podcast,
it's just a conversation. It's super like you've talked people
into being a podcast, Like I don't know, and then
you get the dates arrive, Hey, let's do it now
for the season, to get out of the way, and
we'll just talk and we'll you know, talk music, talk

(03:48):
some football, let people know who we are and that's it.
There is there a benefit to the Kelsey's Yes, is
there a benefit to her Yes? But I I and
I could be wrong. And maybe it's because I believe
in the good and people first and foremost that I
don't think everybody has some master plan on how to

(04:09):
manipulate likes and how to manipulate downloads and what it
means for your music career. Like she's a billionaire, she's
the most popular female artist in the country, period stop.
He is a multi time super Bowl champion, a Pro
Football Hall of Famer. Like, they don't need much more,
they don't need even attention, but it's just their way

(04:32):
of Like people probably don't think she likes her as
into football. You watch that, you listen to that, and
you understand that she's doing what every great partner should do,
which is she's fallen in love with what her partner does.

Speaker 6 (04:54):
What it comes down to, so that I became like
a person who was running through the halls of my house.
We drafted Xavier or Worthy and were like, what is who?
Body snatched you?

Speaker 4 (05:07):
This is? This?

Speaker 1 (05:08):
Is it? What do you mean? We drafted You're worthy?

Speaker 3 (05:12):
I forget where it was, but you were the first
person to tell me that.

Speaker 6 (05:17):
I was screeching. I couldn't believe it. I was freaking out.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
We're talking about like either I'm like, wait, does she
she right?

Speaker 3 (05:23):
I had to look this up. I'm like, she does
she get the wrong information here?

Speaker 6 (05:27):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (05:27):
We traded up?

Speaker 3 (05:28):
Yeah, you know, I will.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
I'm gonna just top in one thing. This is where
you're like a real person. I like when you when
you superstars are real people. She said it's Xavier, but
she says Exavier, it's like a personal pet peeve. But
forever reason it's charming because it makes you seem like
a real person that she has there are things about
her that aren't perfect.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
And that she's learning.

Speaker 5 (05:48):
Yeah, you know, like like so it's a mistake, that's okay,
not a big deal, And yes, I thought that was
I thought it was. I thought it was great as well.
And it wasn't a pick that was or a news
item that was so obvious. There was a little bit
of of nuance in it, or a little bit of
inside that you'd have to be a Chiefs fan to

(06:08):
really get excited about.

Speaker 6 (06:11):
We're talking about cover two, cover four, Cover zero, man covered,
We're talking, we're learning, I continue to learn.

Speaker 3 (06:18):
Maybe somebody else that even knows what those coverages are.

Speaker 6 (06:20):
Yeah, I'm not ready to be an analyst right now,
but give me sixteen months.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Yeah, that's that's He's been on his iPad and they've
been sitting there at home and he's watching and she
wants to know. I think it's awesome.

Speaker 7 (06:37):
Something something tells me that he has been doing the
same thing like I. I reached Taylor Swift and Kelsey
fatigue way early into this, and I've almost come around.
I was very interested to watch last night. I'm very
I was very impressed or startled surprised by how genuine
they are. They're like two giddy teenagers. I love Love.

(06:59):
I like watching Love. But I also think that he
reciprocates that because he's had us fooled this whole time
into thinking that he loves her music. I thought he
was just saying it to be a good boyfriend. But
I think he also likes her music, which goes a
long way with me because I don't like her music
at all. It does nothing for me. It's not for me.

(07:20):
It's for teenage girls. But he seems to just as
she has dived into the football. I think he's actually
embracing her music too, which is a surprise to me.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Stan Patrick Schelle here on Fox Sports Trading, I hear
ready w apple ahead, and I don't.

Speaker 5 (07:37):
I do think her music is for everyone, not just
for teenage girls. It's just Jason may not like it.
I will say that I thought Travis. Travis felt like
the third wheel at times because I think he's used
to him, him and his brother going back and forth,
but understanding that this was Taylor's opportunity that he, you know,

(07:59):
was gonna let her shine and would sprinkle in things.
But it wasn't a back and forth. It was a
back and forth between really Jason and Taylor. And I
thought Jason did a really good job. And I know
that there's some editing that's done, but it's not it's
not sneaky editing at all. You know where the cuts are,
you know where the places where they've they've stopped and
started again. But Jason asked this question to her, which

(08:22):
I thought was great, and I give them credit. Jason
just asked, how did it work when you were trying
to get your master's back, Like, can you tell me
the difference between what you know our publishing rights and
what aren't? And she laid it out for him, and
it was like a real music interview, and she explained

(08:43):
of like what she could do and what she couldn't do,
and why it was important for her to get those
the master recordings, and why it may not be for
every single artist. And I actually thought that that part
of it, aside from them promoting and talking about their relationship,
was actually an informative part of the podcat.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
Yeah, it's Look, I think it's fascinating to understand, to
have people understand a business that they never understood before. Right,
I've had that conversation with a buddy of mine about
masters and about selling him and about holding on to him.
And so when I heard that part, I was I
was intrigued, but I did know a lot of it. Again,

(09:24):
I just thought I thought it was a win, But
it wasn't set out. They didn't set out to win, right,
They didn't set out to win. They just set out
to I want to do a podcast, Let's do it.
That's how it felt. It felt very natural.

Speaker 5 (09:36):
There is something that I do think is I don't
contrive to such a negative connotation. But Travis is on
the cover of GQ. I mentioned this earlier, but Jason
at the start of the podcast, Jason Kelsey said, we
told you where we were going to be back August
twenty seventh. Instead, we've got a surprise. We're going to
do this August thirteenth. Obviously, that dropping helps Taylor, maybe

(09:59):
helps g QU helps Travis. But Travis, within this GQ article,
talked about how his play over the last couple of
years slipped, and he says that he let his media responsibilities,
doing an FX show, hosting a game show on Amazon,
he let those things get in the way of his play. Now, yesterday, Doug,

(10:21):
after your show, I was in with Carrie Rhodes on
Cavino and Ridge, and Carrie was an All Pro and
spend eight years in the league. Says, I just think
he's lost a step. I don't think he has it
anymore like he once did. And I think this is
all cover up and hearing what Carry said, and I
didn't necessarily disagree with Carrie. In the podcast that aired

(10:42):
last night with Taylor, Travis talked about traveling the world
and said that in Taylor brought up the point that
Travis had talked about going to different countries and Taylor's like, yeah, well, hello,
I am going on a tour. We can go to
all of those countries. And so that's what they did
in the summer of twenty twenty five, or Travis was
with her in Europe during those spots or going to

(11:03):
different places. That wasn't mentioned in the GQ article of
the focusing on football. And by the way, it would
be okay, Travis Kelsey's accomplished enough in his NFL career.
He doesn't need to play another down. He's going into
the Hall of Fame. But it was interesting to me
to hear him say that his TV stuff took him away,

(11:24):
But the relationship stuff with Taylor and being in Europe
and doing these different things were not a reason on
why maybe his play slipped.

Speaker 3 (11:31):
Last year, which you disagree with.

Speaker 5 (11:34):
I just don't know how it helps, you know, Like
I was when he went to Argentina two years ago, Yes,
during the bye week, I just thought that's crazy. The
big joke is the NFL is now like we'll just
go to South America once a year. We'll go there too,
So maybe it looks a little bit normal, But I
didn't think that that was the great move for Travis

(11:54):
and preparing for the Chiefs. They ultimately go on and
win the Super Bowl, so it didn't have an effect.
But again, none of this has an effect, and it's
okay if it did. He's at the end of his career.
But it's just it's never brought up as maybe a
reason on why not the relationship, but just the stuff
that comes with the relationship. You're in a different phase
of your life, a different part of your life. But

(12:16):
he's pointed out single about the TV shows, but nothing
in terms of the travel that he may have done
with his girlfriend.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
I would say this that.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
Inevitably, inevitably, there will be some form of negativity towards it.

Speaker 3 (12:32):
Right, There always is, And.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
Here's how I would take that negativity, right, because it's
it's not good. I don't think it's going to be
anybody who matters. I think it'll be the bots or
the fingers on social media that matters. Okay, but remember,
in order to watch this or listen to this, you
have to seek it out, right, you have to seek

(12:59):
it out. So you can say I don't care about them. Okay,
well then don't listen and don't watch. It's fine. There'll
be deal like they'll be they'll be fine. So if
you say, hey, I watched I listened to one, I
think it'd be really hard to come away and think
it's not a real relationship. It's pretty much impossible. And two,
they both seem really likable because Travis does suddenly take

(13:19):
a back seat, which I think he probably likes. And
he's always been the center of attention. Now it's kind
of cool.

Speaker 3 (13:24):
To have a girl that's set of attention, Like that's.

Speaker 2 (13:26):
That's dope, Like he can just kind of he can
just gotta be the arm candy. And then three, like again,
the most important thing when somebody says, like, dude, I
listened to that podcast. Wait so you sought out that podcast,
downloaded it, listen to it, And then you're like, yeah,
I'm not into them like, Okay, that's you just you
want the attention that you think they're trying to get.

Speaker 5 (13:49):
Here's where I don't think it's gonna uh backfire on
him or in any way or it's going to matter.
Is if he plays well this year, then he's right
and all the work that he's done with the speed
and agility coach worked this offseason and guess what it
was the TV shows? Travis identified the problem and addressed it.
And if it doesn't work, and if he has another

(14:09):
down season, he's just old and his better days are
behind him. I don't think that this is going to
come up. And again, I don't think it matters. I
don't think it's a big deal. But it's just funny
because it sounds a little hypocritical by Travis to say
it was the TV shows and my attention to that
as opposed to being away for a month and traveling

(14:32):
throughout Europe.

Speaker 7 (14:33):
I thought it took like balls for him to admit that,
and for him to admit it on GQ. It wasn't
like a sports mag per se or a sports article
or a reporter, but it took balls. And I think
that only a guy who's had his career already could
say I was distracted last season as my team was

(14:53):
trying to win a third straight Super Bowl. Doug, you
talk about the negativity and the bots and everything. I
think a Chief sand would have an actual grievance to
be like, wait a minute, you're admitting to being distracted
as we were trying to set history last year. What's
going on here? And I think Kerry Roads is probably right.
I think that's his way of not admitting that he's
lost a step. But I think it takes balls and

(15:15):
it's almost refreshing to hear a guy actually admit I
was distracted. How many athletes through the years, including Lebron James,
have said there's nothing to that. It's always about the basketball.
Everything else is sidebar. Travis Kelcey actually admitting this, I
think kind of puts him out there for criticism, don't
you think, Doug?

Speaker 3 (15:35):
I do.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
Again, I didn't hear the entire podcast. So were the
TV shows he's talking about last year or he's talking
about in previous years because he did the big reality
show he did was like, yes, ten years ago. More
than that, I was about a ten years ago. I
was at CBS at the time and where he dated
thirty two women in the offseason. I thought that's what
he was referring to, not to last year.

Speaker 5 (15:55):
No, so he didn't mention any of the TV stuff
in the podcast with Taylor Yesterday and the New New
Heights episode. It was in the GQ article where it
was pointed out the FX Show and the show that
he did on Amazon that those were the shows, because
I guess there's multiple episodes with the Amazon show, and
maybe I wasn't familiar with the FX Show, but those
were specifically pointed out as shows that he did.

Speaker 2 (16:20):
The was it what is it something Kelsey is keeping Kelsey?
I forget what it's called? On the Amazon show, which
was pretty good, and this is a different Amazon it was,
This was a different This was like a game show
that he hosted that he ended up being the host.
But the dating show that he did was yeah, that
he wasn't alluding to that that was a decade or
are you.

Speaker 7 (16:38):
Smarter than a celebrity? Was the Amazon Prime show?

Speaker 3 (16:40):
Okay?

Speaker 7 (16:40):
And I wanted to say his dating show is he
didn't he date a woman from every state? Wasn't it
the Kelsey fifty or something stupid like that?

Speaker 2 (16:47):
Something like that, or was it thirty two? I can't remember. Wait,
so when was the when was the game show?

Speaker 5 (16:51):
Was Chasing Kels? I think that the game show was
last the last off season twenty twenty four.

Speaker 7 (16:57):
Okay, so last fifty women from fifty state. It's vibe
for the heart of a pro football player. Chasing Kelsey
twenty sixteen.

Speaker 3 (17:05):
Yeah, nine years ago. I was. I was close.

Speaker 2 (17:08):
I was close in my ears. I remember I interviewed
him like he was. You know, you talk about you
talk about a guy who you had. I had no
idea would reach superstar status nine years ago. Think about
how his life changed when Pat Mahomes became his quarterback.

Speaker 7 (17:20):
We were at the Super Bowl maybe it was Los Angeles,
I forget which super Bowl, and Doug and I are
prepping for the show, and all of a sudden, I hear, hey, Doug, Doug.
Somebody trying to get Doug's attention. Who's being walked by
a publicist the other way? And I look over. It's
Travis Kelsey trying to get Doug Gottlieb's attention as he.

Speaker 2 (17:37):
Were, because we used to He used to come out
all the time and we talked basketball because he played
basketball Cincinnati, and we had him like mutual mutual friends,
and you know, I like again to go from that,
I have his number, I've never haven't texted him in years.
I've no idea if he has the same number, if
he'd even know who you know, new phone, who dish.
But yeah, I mean medio like ridiculous, ridiculous. Went from hey, yeah,

(18:02):
I know yeah to these in the names you know
in the NFL non quarterbacks, he's top five in any
conversation correct, yes, and then after this podcast and after
you know, now obviously a long standing relationship with Taylor
Swift the most don'n by proxy. So so that's that's

(18:31):
an unbelievable rise, unbelievableuse. I'm Doug Gottlieb, He's Dan Byer.
Of course you heard from Jason Stewart as well. This
is the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio. We
got a bunch to get to in this hour of
the show, including we'll have the Dodgers of the Dodgers
hit rock Bottom. It's a great question, and you know,

(18:54):
if you don't listen to the Doug Gottlieb Show, you
don't you may not know that you you may not
know that our own Dan, our own Jason Stewart is
a die hard, die hard Dodger fan.

Speaker 1 (19:10):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio a app.

Speaker 3 (19:20):
Pauli Fools go here with Tony Foodsco.

Speaker 4 (19:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (19:23):
As everybody knows, we're the hosts of the award winning
Polly and Tony Foodsco Show.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (19:26):
But instead of us telling you how great we are,
here's how Dan Patrick described us when he came on
our show.

Speaker 2 (19:32):
Quick, knowledgeable and funny, opinionated.

Speaker 1 (19:36):
What what are you doing? Were interrupting our promo?

Speaker 3 (19:38):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (19:38):
You wasn't talking about you.

Speaker 6 (19:40):
You took those clips totally of context.

Speaker 8 (19:43):
Oh yeah, well after this promo, I'm gonna take you
out and beat you.

Speaker 3 (19:47):
Let me put this into context. Shut up.

Speaker 8 (19:49):
Yeah, anyway, just listen to the Paully and Tony Fusco
Show on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Speaker 2 (19:56):
Yea, let's talk some baseball, shall we, Dan, You're okay
with that, Let's do it.

Speaker 3 (20:03):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (20:04):
The world has gone upside down. One has gone upside down.
The Dodgers can't beat the Angels, and no one can
beat the Milwaukee Brewers. John John Morossi joins us Fox
Sports Radio MLB Insider. He's a reporter for the MLB
Network and he joins us here on the Dan Patrick
Show on Fox Sports Radio. The Brewers are twenty eight

(20:26):
and four over the last thirty two games, and Misowski's
missed the last couple starts right because he's been on
the il How how has this happened?

Speaker 3 (20:38):
John Well?

Speaker 4 (20:38):
First, first of all, good morning, my friends. I would
say this that as both of you know, well, the
great state of Wisconsin is at the center of the
sports universe, right, I mean, that's that's.

Speaker 3 (20:49):
It starts, It starts it. It's definitely First Avenue, First Street.
It's the nexus of the universe, as as Kramer is.

Speaker 4 (20:56):
And actually I think that that's what the license plates
in Wisconsin now say, the next of the universe, the
center of the sports world. It really is. I tell
you what. The Brewers have something specially going on right now,
and a couple things stand out to me. The return
of Brandon Woodruff has been sign different. If you look
at that stretch that you mentioned, Doug, it coincides with

(21:17):
the arrival of the return from the injured list of
Brandon Woodruff. Now I realized he's a starting pitcher. He
pitches once every fifth day, but he does have a
way I think of stabilizing this entire group and elevating
the pitching staff, and I think lessening the burden on
everybody else to where they now just go and pitch

(21:37):
their game. Look at Quinn Priester, the man just can't
lose eleven and two. He's just He's winning decisions left
and right. Freddie Parrals has pitches like an ace as well.
And then and then with the with respect to the
position players outside of Hoskins and Yelis, they're all in
their twenties, they're all young, a lot of them are athletic.

(21:59):
Bryce Teran, I think that is one of the most
underrated players in the game you've seen.

Speaker 2 (22:03):
Now.

Speaker 4 (22:04):
Isaac Collins is a two sport star from the great
state of Minnesota. Look what he's doing right now. So
there's a lot of really good stories for this organization.
Excellent GM, excellent manager and Pat Murphy. There's just a
lot to like about the way they're playing. And it's
all happening at a time where their rivals to the
south in Chicago are starting to flip slip backwards. And

(22:26):
that was not the case by the way I was.
I was at regularly over fourth of July, and I
was saying to myself, the Cubs gonna win this division.
I was convinced of it. And the ballpark was rocking,
and Pete kro ensfrom was looking like an MVP candidate.
But now he has struggled, Kyle Tucker's has been okay,
and and the Brewers have just simply dominated in that

(22:48):
last month, and the Cubs have fallen back into second place.
And frankly, guys, I just I do not see a
pass to where the Cubs are going to finish first
in this division right now?

Speaker 5 (22:55):
How about this one? PA has gone from m v
P to m I A at all. Thank you very much.

Speaker 4 (23:02):
There you go, there you go.

Speaker 5 (23:03):
I want to I want to just ask on a
bigger picture thing with the Brewers, because of the starting pitching,
could this be a turn back to the way baseball
normally is like, if you're a if you're a team
that is similar to Milwaukee, you just laid out the
deficiencies that we would think they would have in their

(23:24):
hitting lineup, but on the mound they're good Like is
this could this be a turn back to maybe where
we are relying more on starting pitching than we have
over the past few years.

Speaker 4 (23:33):
Well, I think that you're right, Dan, and and and
here's here's an important point. We talked so much about
the Dodgers and how they won the World Series last
year and how creative they had to be they were
using bullpen games they wouldn't have won without what Yamamoto
gave for them during the course of the postseason, and

(23:54):
and what when you consider it, even what Flaharty gave
to them as he came in as a trade deadline acquisition.
You need to have some guys. It was Evaldi for
the Rangers. You go back year year by year by
year by year. There are certainly cases where where teams
have utilized their bullpen to great effect and won the

(24:15):
World Series. But in almost every single one of those examples,
and I would actually say, in every one of those examples,
you've got a starting pitcher who soaks up innings and
makes the rest of the symphony go. It's like trying
to have a great musical performance at Lascala and Milan
Italy without a first chair violin. You know, it still

(24:36):
sounds fine, but it's not. It's not gonna all come
together in the end, and you need to have someone's
gonna be the first chair violin at some point. And
I think the Brewers right now have two of those guys,
and the teams that are having success, by the way,
the other team in the National League I think is
going to be dangerous in the playoffs. Look at the Phillies.
They haven't had Aaron Nola for three months and he's

(24:58):
about to come back. And by the Christopher Sanchez, if
you compare pitch for pitch with Paul Skemes, you could
argue that Stancha should be the silon winner in the
National League. So they are really good. And you want
to know why the Phillies are where they are and
why the Mets are where they are. The Phillies are
a better rotation, and the Phillies their position pier group

(25:19):
is probably a little bit healthier right now. But the
rotation is a huge reason why. And in the American League,
why have the Mariners all of a sudden taken off
because they've got a great rotation. So there is certainly
room in this game for creativity and finding different ways
to get twenty seven outs. But at some point it's
gonna matter who's starting the game for you. And at

(25:39):
some point you can be clever, but you're gonna eventually
run out of pitching if you're if you're trying to
bullpen your way through an entire months or entire six months.
And I think what we're seeing right now major League Baseball, Dan,
to your point, is bearing exactly that truth out.

Speaker 2 (25:52):
I would love John Rossi joining us Fotch Sports Radio
MLB Insider works for the NIB Network as well. He
joins us here in Dan pat Show, Fox Sports Radio.
I'd love to talk about the Angels, right a team
that everybody just, you know, the laughing stock in many
ways of Major League Baseball because they had Otani and
trouton did nothing, and here they are close to five hundred,
they sweep the Dodgers and way better than we expect.

(26:15):
But let's just be honest, nobody cares, okay care about
the Dodgers now, John, you know Jason Stewart as big
and educated a Dodger fan as you're gonna find anywhere,
and his issue was, why are we holding on it.
Why aren't we going for it and going and getting
some big dogs out of the bullpen, go get the

(26:35):
best of the best of the best to win another
World Series at the trade deadline? Why did Andrew Freeman
approach it this way?

Speaker 4 (26:45):
Well, the answer is and Freedman has basically said this.
He believed that the guys they had coming back and
based on the information they had from a medical standpoint
as of July thirty one, said to them that they
were going to have an abundance of starting pitching that
would then allow you to have a greater abundance of relievers.

(27:09):
And I think they believe that Shrinen would be better
than he has been in terms of his return from
the injured list. But right now you're you're really in
a situation where you've got no closer, especially after Stuart
landed on the injured list. I mean, right now, there's
a very very handy website that I that I often
consult this time of year, roster resource, with this part

(27:31):
of fangrass. Right now they have seven relievers, seven relievers
on the injured list. Relievers Rereterol Grove, Copec Phillips, Scott
Stewart and Yates seven. That's an entire bullpen worth of
injured guys. And that's in addition to the injured starters,
which include Gonsolin, Hurt, Ryan, Tosaki and Stone. That's that

(27:55):
is an entire pitching staff of injured guys. I mean,
that's it is. They won the World Series last year
by having to utilize forty different pitchers forty. I was
on the radio earlier today in Toronto, and I made
the point that when the Jays won the World Series
in nineteen ninety two, they used seventeen seventeen back in

(28:17):
ninety two, and it was forty last year. It is
it's not sustainable really now. But and I say all
that the answer is in that information that I just
gave you. That Andrew Friedman said, we believe that we're
going to be healthy by the time October arrives, and
that provided that we make the playoffs, and I'm paraphrasing here,

(28:38):
that we could have as much pitching depth and as
good as a pitching staff thirteen guys as we have
ever had. That's what he's said. So his information says
that they're going to get healthier and be able to
withstand whatever is to come in the weeks ahead, and
let's be fair, today is the first day in more
than one hundred days they don't at least have a
share of the divisions lead. So it's not as though

(29:01):
they have been be reft of quality pitching for the
entire season. They're in second place by a game, so
we got to be careful about that. But the short
answer is Andrew Friedman believes these guys are gonna get healthy,
and he'd better be right or else there's gonna be
a lot of questioning by the Dodger fans about why
they didn't do more at the deadline.

Speaker 5 (29:23):
Hunter Green came back for the Reds last night. We
touched a little on the Mets, a little on the Phillies.
When you look at the NL, the Mets now just
a game up on Cincinnati and that wild card. Does
Cincinnati have enough or do the Mets have enough to
hang on? How do you think that final wild card
sets out as it seems to be? And you could
correct me if I'm wrong. Four teams for three.

Speaker 4 (29:43):
Spots, Yeah it is. It is four teams for three spots,
and I think, listen, the Reds have as much of
a chance as anybody else right now. I mean, I'm
talking about that last spot between them and the Mets.
The Mets have just not been the same team since
Lindor got hit in the toe with a pitch at
Dodger Stadium two months ago. It just totally change their season.
He has stayed in the lineup. He is a very
tough player. He wants to play, but he's not the

(30:06):
same guy right now. And you understand why. If you're
trying to play baseball and play shortstup with a broken toe,
you wouldn't be doing too good either. And that's that's
where he's at right now. Meanwhile, the Reds with Green
coming back, they've got all this momentum in Mojo, They've
got an excellent manager in Terry Francona. And where did
Miguel and do r come from? Okay, because he is
he has the DH now for the Reds. He was lost,

(30:29):
forgotten about, and all of a sudden he's back on
the radar, and and he was acquired at the deadline
from the A's and he all of a sudden looks
like Ellie de la Cruz when he's when he's batting
from the right side. It's just it's it's unbelievable. So
they've gotten now a legit clean up guy to protect
Ellie de la Cruz. Gavin Lux has been able to
hit a little higher in the lineup than I thought

(30:49):
he would be. Noelvie Marte is a solid player who
can move around the diamond for you. I like this
team and I think they're the bullpen wise, they've got enough.
Pegan is a good closer. They've got some solid guys
in front of him. So Terry Francona always seems to
know how to get the most out of his roster.
And let's be clear about this. The Reds are one

(31:09):
game back of the Mets, and the amount of pressure
the Mets are facing and dealing with right now is
just not even in the same universe as what the
Reds thing was. The Reds are in a very comfortable situation.
They're playing very comfortably, no stress, no pressure. If they
make the playoffs, everybody's gonna love them. If they miss it,

(31:30):
they're not supposed to make the playoffs anyway. Whereas the
Mets have the weight of the world and every game
they lose, people are totaling up their payroll to decide
if they're going to be a big bust or not.
So it's just a totally different universe. And I in
a situation like that, I tend to say advantage Terry
Francona and his guys.

Speaker 2 (31:49):
Miguel Amaya one day off the IL is going back
on the IL. It didn't look good as he's trying
to run out of play at first base. Cubs are
already taking on water and they got a big five
game series against the Brewers at home next week.

Speaker 3 (32:05):
How much does this set back the Cubs?

Speaker 4 (32:08):
It is, it's a it's a big deal because they
also they moved on from John Verdi and they made
some different decisions with their roster because they expected that
Emaiah would be healthy, and so they now they're calling
up Owen Casey, which is, in a small parenthetical here
a positive story for own is going to make his
major league debut in his hometown of Toronto. So like,
there's that story. But the big picture here is the

(32:29):
Cubs are not playing well and they just lost a
really important player in Miguel Amaya. Again, your heartbreak for
him because he just came back. As you point out, Doug,
They're they're not in a good way right now, and
we and Dan talked earlier about about PCA. It's just
he were realizing the extent to which they were needing
Peter Armstrong to be great and Kyle Tucker to be great,

(32:52):
and since both have have regressed a bit, and and
PCA has regressed a lot, they're just not the same team.
They're they're they're good team, but not a great team.
And they're in the same divisions as a ball club
in Milwaukee that is just playing out of their minds
at the moment. That's like, you feel like they're not
going to lose again. So the Cubs are in a
real They're in a real spot. And and now the

(33:14):
other piece of this is they've got to find a
way to at least preserve home field advantage in the
first round or else they may you know, if they
are on the road for the wild Card series and
they end up losing that series, for example, they might
they might not even get a chance to play a
game at Wrigley all most seasons. Or how about this,

(33:35):
what if it's CBS Dodgers in the wild card round
because the Brewers are in first place and the Podres
are in first place, you might see the situation where
that that's the matchup Cobs Dodgers. How about that? So
that would be quite a story, and honestly, it's not
that far fetch based on where the standings look look
right now, that.

Speaker 5 (33:53):
Would be amazing to be in Chicago in LA or
to sit back in your TV in the up and
watch the games. I don't know if you guys have
talked about this, but I feel, Doug you have this
love for the Upper Peninsula. Morosi is a native. Anytime
we can talk, he is.

Speaker 4 (34:12):
I was born in Marquette, Doug. I moved down when
I was like two and a half, but we'd always
go back pretty much every summer when I was growing
up to visit family, friends. And I'm a proud I
like to say I'm a proud dual citizen of Michigan.
Born born in the up grew up in the Lower Peninsula,
but I love Marquette. God's country up there, Northern Michigan
obviously the alma mater of Mariuccianizzo, and just a gorgeous

(34:34):
place there. I was born at Marquette General Hospital with
a view of Lake Superior. That is is beautiful as
a spots're ever going to find Prescott Park is amazing.

Speaker 2 (34:42):
I would just say, what percentage of people in the
United States know that there's an upper peninsula of Michigan.
Great question, like what do we think like we did
Man on the Street fifty fifty.

Speaker 4 (34:56):
I'd say probably less than that, Doug. But that's but listen.

Speaker 2 (34:59):
I tell people the time, like I'm in Michigan. Where
are you Michigan, I'm in the upper pencil? Like what's that?

Speaker 4 (35:06):
I mean, I'll say that whenever when we see when
there are different it.

Speaker 3 (35:10):
Is a different place. Now it is a different country.

Speaker 4 (35:13):
Well the up and by the way, it's getting more
popular remote work. It's almost got like a little Bend
Oregon vibe.

Speaker 3 (35:19):
Whatever. Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (35:20):
You can't there's no like Wi Fi and you can't
there's no cell service in outside of you know, the
two towns Marquette and what of Michigan Tech with towns.

Speaker 3 (35:28):
That one in.

Speaker 4 (35:30):
But listen, listen, just among I'll make two points number one.
When they have like the big American flag at at
like it was like at the All Star Game this year,
I said, you have not put the proper shape of
the up in there, And I felt a little bit sad.
I was like, that's my spot, man, you got you
got to get that thing on the flag. That's number one,
number two off the record, just among us, okay, just

(35:52):
among friends here. It is the most beautiful place to live,
I believe, in America, and it will probably only be
a best kept secret for so long because it is
simply glorious. If you can, as my dad has told
me many times, guys, Johnny, if you if you can
deal with snow and you've got a job, it's the
best place to live in the world. And he's exactly

(36:13):
right about that.

Speaker 3 (36:14):
Feel the same back green Bay, Wisconsin.

Speaker 4 (36:18):
That was, by the way, that was the mall. So
so my parents would have to drive when I when
I was a little kid, when they went to the mall,
it was like an all day excursion. They would drive
from Marquet to Green Bay and drive back. That was
that was the mall trip.

Speaker 2 (36:29):
Well, now you got to go to Appleton for the
for the bigger mall. Thanks so much, John, We appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (36:34):
Thanks John.

Speaker 2 (36:35):
I'm gull he's Dan byer in for Dan. The dan
Nets punishment's coming down for Michigan football.

Speaker 3 (36:40):
How bad is it? You'll find out next.

Speaker 1 (36:42):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app search FSR to

Speaker 2 (36:54):
It's the Dan Patrick Show. Fox Sports Radio. Do do
so on a daily basis, not today, not tomorrow, tomorrow,
I'm doing the Herd, right, I'm don the Herd tomorrow
and then Dann you doing my show tomorrow?

Speaker 3 (37:11):
Are chefs? Okay? Great?

Speaker 2 (37:13):
So normally, hey, this is how we do the show.
And then we have big news an update, we go
to Dan Byer. So let's go to Dan Byer because
there's news on Michigan football.

Speaker 5 (37:22):
Yeah, so Pete Thanmeil. Dan Wetzel of ESPN reporting that
the NC Double A has notified the parties at Michigan
that they will release their findings and possible punishments for
the Wolverine football program tomorrow. So they will find out
and this is tied to the Connor Stallions spying scandal,

(37:42):
but the NC Double A has wrapped everything up and
the punishments, if there are any, will be handed out
on Friday.

Speaker 2 (37:50):
And then hardball was suspended for three games?

Speaker 7 (37:53):
Is that right?

Speaker 3 (37:53):
It was a three games?

Speaker 5 (37:55):
Yes, And there was also there was also I believe
he received a show cause penalty for the COVID for
the COVID of the violations during the COVID dead period.
There was stuff that was going on there. They also
reportedly failed to cooperate with the investigation on both times.
It's I don't I think everybody's been guessing that's been

(38:18):
interested in it. The people that haven't been interested in
it don't care about it. And then just like all right,
move on. Harbaugh's in the NFL. Michigan won the National Championship.
But within the world of college football with Michigan, with
Ohio State, with Michigan State and those schools and tomorrow
will be interesting.

Speaker 7 (38:37):
They lay out the dynamic just for our listeners who
aren't familiar. Dan Byer is a diehard Ohio State fan,
and then Gottlieb by nature downplays everything. So this story
has been a non story to Doug and it's been
a huge story to Dan.

Speaker 2 (38:52):
It's always in the middle, like just my thing on
football sign stealing. Football sign stealing, right is there's a
reason they have three guys there doing different signs. You
have to know somebody's trying to steal your signs. You
got to now coaching, like, we know you have film
on everything we do, so do we do hand signals?

Speaker 3 (39:14):
Do we do calls? You know? Like how do you?
How do you do it?

Speaker 2 (39:19):
So granted, going to those games is taking up a notch.
I also think there's the there's the at that level
of coaching, at that level, At my level, I have
to know everything I do. We got to do everything,
every ounce of the budget, every penny that's paid, I
gotta handle it. But at that level, I think Jim

(39:41):
Harbaugh coached the team and he's doing advanced scouting. He
didn't just go get the information bring it back.

Speaker 3 (39:47):
I don't. I'm not micro managing you. How to do you?

Speaker 2 (39:50):
And he went and did He went and did a
bang up job. But I think they all have guys
that do that. They all have guys that do that.

Speaker 7 (39:57):
Do you guys think the story is elevated at all?

Speaker 3 (39:59):
On what time?

Speaker 7 (40:00):
Kind of a weird goofy character Connor Stallions is.

Speaker 3 (40:03):
I'll tell you what.

Speaker 5 (40:04):
I think it's downplayed because of the lack of power
by the NCAA that we feel that.

Speaker 2 (40:08):
Right they have, so like, here's the reality to it. Now,
if they say Hey, you got a scholarship.

Speaker 3 (40:14):
Limitation, It doesn't matter anymore.

Speaker 2 (40:17):
Everybody's got the same roster limits. And if the NCAA
doesn't like to give somebod a scholarship, your collective can
just pay for it. Same thing, right, Like, yeah, it's expensive,
but same thing. So you can't really limit scholarships. The
only thing you can limit is can they play in
the college football Playoff? And oh yeah, by the way,

(40:37):
most of the things outside of punishments that the NCAA
has done have been struck down in courts. So that's
probably what's next. Is if they try and say, hey,
we're gonna keep them out of the college fotball Playoff,
Michigan's gonna sue, because everybody who seems to sue the
NCAA wins wins.

Speaker 5 (40:55):
A documentary was a piece of work. I though real
and I'm not in a good way by the way
people thought it was.

Speaker 3 (41:02):
Oh it was awesome. Gottor Stallion's the best. Wrong.

Speaker 2 (41:06):
But we'll find out tomorrow, Doug. We will find out tomorrow.
You'll hear Dan on the Doug Gottlieb Show tomorrow. You'll
hear me in the Herd tomorrow. For Chris Prefet for
a Jason Stewart for Dan Byer. I'm Doug Gottlieb. Please
you're back Monday. This is the Dan Patrick's Show, Fox
Sports Radio.
