Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Sports Boom, What Up America Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio. Back in the greatest city in all
of the world, the City of Angels, Los Angeles, California.
Welcome in. If you're watching this streaming live or even
when we rerun this thing on Facebook or on Twitter,
(00:21):
on Instagram, we can put this on Instagram, can't we Like, yeah,
we should be able to. I g it, don't give
me this. I don't know your Elijah is our social
media coordinate or coordinate You've got to claudinate. Welcome in.
We got a lot to get to the head coach
of the number one ranked team in the country. And
I love this. How narratives become uh facts is amazing
(00:44):
in our country. It's like we're gonna get till later
on we'll be get to a little bit with Tony Bennett,
Virginia's head coach. But there's this, Oh, there's all these
scandals in college and youth basketball, and so the NBA
is going to react and post expand the G League.
And I'm not saying that there isn't there. There wasn't
(01:05):
four assistance arrested in FBI probe. I'm not saying that
there aren't people breaking rules. But before we um, before
we convict an entire sport, let's catch our breath and
go right now. We got four coaches that have been indicted.
(01:26):
There's nine people total. There's three D and fifty one
Division one programs. By my math, I don't know when
something becomes systematic, but I'm struggling to find a systematic
systematic issue. Doesn't mean there aren't issues. There aren't issues
within this simple uh, within the system, but systematic I'm
(01:47):
not ready to get there yet. The other narrative in
college basketball's we are a week for away from essentially
our n c A field being set and a weekend
two days away from having our first the first four
playing games for a weekend a day. Actually, um is
there are no dominant teams in college basketball? Is twenty
(02:12):
eight wins and two losses dominant? All right? What if
you're in the a c C and you have twenty
eight wins and two losses. What if you're the unanimous
m v P after the regular season is of unanimous
number one team in the country. After the regular season
is over and you're twenty eight and two and you
(02:35):
play in the a c C. Again, the narrative is
anybody can win this thing, and there's probably some truth
to it. There is there there will be feels, feels
almost certain that there will be a topsy turvy n
c A tournament. But Virginia two and they won the
a c C. If that's not dominant, I'm not really sure.
(02:56):
What is Tony Bennett, head coach of the wah who's
going to join us upcoming in about ten minutes. Let's
get to the NFL draft combine, where people freak out
about times and some some matter, right, some matter because
some guys are they look faster on tape than they
(03:20):
do in person, some guys become some guys are only
fast at the combine. Um, a quarterback speed is not
really that important, although I do think a quarterback has
to have good feet. A quarterbacks throwing it's relatively important.
But quarterback generally, if you ask NFL people, and I have,
(03:42):
they will tell you that the quarterbacks is in the
evaluation of the quarterback position is neck up. Now what
when you hear neck up? You think it's just about
how book smart you are, how smart you are recall,
and there is some of that. There's emotional intelligence, social intelligence,
(04:03):
football intelligence, and downright intelligence. And so while we we
make fun of some of the ridiculous questions and answers
that are reported to have come out of these combined
meetings between players and gms and presidents of football operations,
the fact is that in the NFL, that meeting, that
(04:28):
whiteboard session, that discussion about football, it's not more important
than how you throw and how you move and how
big you are. But can we be honest and say
it's as important. And so there's this discussion about Lamar
(04:48):
Jackson and apparently no teams, truly, no teams have asked
him about playing wide receiver. There were some teams that
requested he ran the wide receiver routes, or that he
did some of the wide receiver in terms of trade,
he didn't run the forty. And I just I find
(05:09):
this entire exercise fascinating because here's the problem Lamar Jackson.
Based on what I've been told from two different general managers,
and they both said almost the exact same thing was
they had Josh Rosen, Sam Donald Baker, Mayfield, Josh Allen,
(05:30):
Mason Rudolph, and Lamar Jackson all in front of their
football group, and both men to a man who are
in the quarterback market, whether their first round or second round.
There in the quarterback market they talked to all of them,
said Baker Mayfield as a ridiculously high football like you.
(05:55):
Josh Rosen's right there, so is Sam Donald. Donald seemed
to control both rooms a little bit better than everybody else,
and guys just to come away feeling nice, feeling good
like he just has that that's something that quarterbacks have. Uh,
Mason Rudolph's just midge behind, but generally pretty good. Rudolph's
(06:15):
the guy who they don't think has a strong enough
arm or big enough hands, even though he looks the part.
Six ft five Greek god type looking kid from Oklahoma State.
Josh Allen checks every box except not just the accuracy
when he throws in a game, but he's behind in
terms of his white board work, his level of aptitude,
(06:36):
and overall football intelligence. And then there's Lamar Jackson, who's
a good a good step or two behind even that
of Josh Allen, demonstratly, demonstratly worse than Rosen, Donald and Mayfield.
But you're not gonna hear that, because you know what,
(06:56):
no one wants to be called No one wants to
be called a racist. Now, if you want to tell
me that the NFL had a racial bias against black
quarterbacks for thirty forty fifty years, I I can only
agree with you. I mean, it was it seemed dumbfounding
that Warren Moon had to go to the CFL. I
(07:19):
don't know enough about what Warren Moon did to improve
when he was in the CFL. But Warren Moon, he
wasn't a runner. He was a great drop back, passed
through an incredible ball. And I don't understand again, I
don't understand why he had to go to Canada. It
was a different time and maybe he wasn't evaluator, didn't
(07:39):
fit in the right system properly. But if you want
to hold Warren Moon and other quarterbacks Doug Williams the
famous how long you've been a black quarterback question against him,
that's fine. I'm not saying historically in our country, we
we weren't led by people that held racial biases against others.
(08:01):
But all of these men in front offices in the
NFL want to win. Okay, Russell Wilson's black. No one's
ever questioned his aptitude because he appears to be able
to handle the position. Even when you look at Jamis Winston,
who I think, Look, he's from the South, and so
(08:24):
you might not understand the drawl, you might not understand
some of the lingo in terms of football, like you,
everyone in the NFL when they interviewed him said off
the charts. But the Lamar Jackson thing has taken on
a completely different tone and feel and almost almost fear based,
(08:47):
anger based assessment of the assessment of Lamar Jackson. Sure,
he's not particularly accurate in comparison to the others he has.
He a city, gets rid of quick, He's got a
great arm, he can throw it way down the field.
I think it's a massive mistake for him to not
(09:07):
run the forty in front of everybody, because he would
have blown everybody away. Like, oh, that's why they want
to be wide receiver, because he's fast as a wide receiver.
But he's played quarterback in college. But the level of
football aptitude it takes to play quarterback in the NFL appears,
at least at this point, to be beyond his skill set.
(09:30):
But you're not gonna hear that from people because they
don't want to be called a racist. Whether about Labar
Jackson is or isn't quick enough to come up to
speed eventually and be a starting quarterback has nothing to
do with the fact that he's black. Sam Donald being
viewed ahead of him has nothing to do with the
fact that he's white. It has to do with the
(09:51):
fact that football guys put a white put a pen
in their hands in front of a white board and said, hey,
show us this, show us that, and he was behind
the other guys, does it. We have to make sure
we open ourselves up to fairness of evaluation and we
(10:13):
try and we try as hard as we can to
not carry past into instances of racial bias against people
who are currently in jobs just trying to figure out,
all right, all right, how do I make the right choice?
By the way, Teddy Bridgewater, black quarterback out of Louisville,
(10:34):
no one talks about him playing wide receiver. You know why,
because Teddy Bridgewater isn't as fast as Lamar Jackson, and
he's apparently brighter in terms of football aptitude. The Lamar
Jackson not because the color of the skin, just because
of the makeup of the human being. Tony Bennet's gonna
join us up coming. Next, I'll ask him, are we

Gotlip Show Fox Sports Radio. It's weird, how maybe I
look at the world completely differently than everybody else, and
I realized that, you know, anyone can be beaten seemingly
in college basketball. But when a team wins the a
(12:42):
c C, which is always in the discussion the best
conference in the country, they play a quality out of
conference schedule, and they only lose two games, and they
receive every single first place vote in both polls, like
that would strike me as a pretty aspiring and here's
a crazy word, pretty dominant season. Last year, the number
(13:06):
one team at this exact same week was Kansas. They
were eight and three, Virginia and two, and yet the
narrative is there are no great teams, no dominant teams.
Weird because it almost feels like the narrative doesn't fit
the reality. Let's welcome in the head coach of the
wah Who's the champions of the a c C and
the unanimous number one team at the end of the
(13:29):
regular season in college basketball? Tony Bennett's our guest on
the Doug Gottlieb Show. How would you characterize your regular season? Well,
you know what I was what I'd say. I don't
think we're a team that has to be great. We
just have to be good all the time. And I
think that's our way. I don't We're not even a
knockout punch team. And I think our record is just
(13:51):
hearing that indicates it was a heck of a regular season. Um.
But I think we've just been consistently good for long enough.
And I think our guys realized, you know what, anybody
can beat us, especially a CC wise in the tournament
post season, and we can beat anybody. And that's a
good place to start. And there is a lot of Perier.
We want a lot of close games. I don't know
(14:12):
if you saw our Louisville endings so that it can
speak to itself. But we've been in so many close
games and there is parody, but yet we've been successful most.
I think that's what's really, you know, a credit to
thus far, to our to our guys. So I don't
think dominance the right word. I know numbers wise and
all that, it's just it's you wouldn't watch us. We're
(14:33):
I don't think we're a typical UM team as you
maybe look at that would just dominate or blow people away. Well,
I mean, I think part of it is he almost
pro rate the stats because of longer possessions, fewer possessions
and so but yes, there have been let's talk to
Louisville game which was last week. People didn't watch it.
You guys were down four with point nine seconds to
(14:53):
go and win and win, and like, look, they ran
the baseline when the couldn't run the baseline, and uh,
you almost want to feel bad for a kid that
runs the baseline. But you know, you either know the
rules you don't know the rules. You've been a part
of this your entire life, your dad was a great coach.
(15:13):
You played, you played in the NBA, you played overseas,
You've been an assistant, you've been a head coach at
two different places. Wazoo, he took him to the sweet sixteen,
and you and hear what you've done in Virginia. Have
you ever one or lost a game in close to
that fashion before? Yeah, you know, I've been on both
sides of that. Two two years ago we beat wake
(15:35):
Forest in an almost improbable way. You know, maybe not
with point nine and down four, would not with the ball,
But that was one We were beat by Miami my
first or SEC second year in the A SEC tournament.
We're up ten points UM with forty five or forty
two seconds and it was just gut wrenching loss in overtime.
(15:55):
I remember we had Stanford beat they were twenty four
and oh my dad's Syra Washington State, and we were
up five and very similar we turning over. They they
threw went in at the buzzer and um, but point
nine tony tony point nine seconds point nine. But I
and like like the Syracuse, the Syracuse, and I hate
(16:17):
to bring this one up, Syracuse. One with the elite
eight two years ago where I mean it was over.
It was they could not score against you, and you
know your zone offense was working. But that was kind
of that. That was like a course of the game, right,
all of a sudden they came back, they started pressing
your guys first, you know, attacked and you played past
like you tried everything against it. But I mean, to
(16:40):
to win or lose the game for down four point
nine seconds is crazy. Yeah, from that standpoint, yeah, I
guess you're right. So that was pretty fortunately, So does
it make you think, hey, maybe it's span to be sure? No, Im,
we've had really especially here, and there's been so many
great things that have happened. But that was special for sure.
(17:02):
That night it was meant to be because it was.
The statistics and other things did not suggest it. Last year.
For people who don't remember, last year, you had a
kid named Austin Nichols supposed to be your starting center.
He only plays one game he ends up getting kicked
off the team. You had a spectacular senior point guard,
London Prentice, but you had some defections. Darius Thompson goes
(17:24):
to West Kentucky, Mario Shayak goes to I think Iowa State, right,
and so I mean, I mean, look, you lose essentially
what six three of your top six guys really for
four of your top six if you if you're throw
in Austin Nichols. And obviously that was when, uh it
created opportunities for Jack Salt to play so much last year.
But there were thoughts that, oh wait a second, this
(17:45):
program might be down this year. Did you know you
had a chance to be this successful considering the turnover
you had in your program. I think there was a
lot of uncertainty. I didn't know. I didn't know if
we could be as good as we were last year
because we had won twenty plus games and you know,
went to the n c A tournament. Um, so I
wasn't sure because the returners were guys that were more
(18:06):
of they were the glue guys Jack Salt, Isaiah Wilkins,
Devon Hall. We had no double digit scores returning. And
then we had some really good young players Tie Jerome
and Kyle Guy. You know, they played maybe fifteen minutes
of game as first years and did showed flashes. But
we weren't sure and the other guys were really more
you know, just either a red shirt and DeAndre Hunter
(18:26):
who was very talented. So it was just unproven and
so no one really knew what to expect. But would
you have said, yeah, this is what you're gonna have. No,
you went have thought that, but you knew they had
a chance to be good or was just their chemistry
has been unlike any other team I've coached up to
this point, so that that's what I think has certainly
set them apart. And you know there's definitely ability here. Uh,
(18:47):
your deb made a Final four, um, and I know
there's there's that one step that I know it's only
one more game and obviously you'd like to win, not
just get to the Final four, but win those two games.
How important is that? Yeah? I mean you know how
much how much of that of the Syracuse game? How
much of losing in the tournament does comes up when
you're getting ready for the n Ciator. Are you able
(19:09):
to process the now and not think about what's happened previously? Yeah?
I think that. You know, every year and every team
is different, and you just want to be playing your best.
You know that Syracuse game, you just want it for
the guys. I was part of that with my dad,
I was I wasn't really even gonna get into coaching,
and I um, I came back as a volunteer manager,
(19:29):
and I knew I couldn't play much more, you know, professionally,
and I just wanted to. I knew my day I
was getting close to the end of his run, as
I just want to kind of be with him. And
that's the year that team went to the final four,
and I said, man, I said that I didn't realize
how hard it was, first of all, because it happens easy.
But I realized how special was so that that's a
magical ride, of course, and that something you certainly want
(19:50):
to do. But um, but I used the term you
have to hold things with open hands. You really do,
because you can't control matchups how you play. Um. You
just I told our guys, don't overcomplicated. Let's just prepare
as well as we can. Let's try to improve, and
let's play to win when we get our chances, and
the rest kind of has you have to have to
(20:11):
take care of itself because you know it's it would
be wonderful. But I think that each team has its
own challenges and you're always hoping for that at the
start of each year to get that far or win
at all. That's that's the real thing. Of course, Tony
Bennett joining us. He's the head coach of Virginia. They're
the number one ranked team in the country. They have
gotten their unanimous number one team the country in both polls.
(20:31):
He's joining us here on the Doug Ot Lip Show
on Fox Sports Radio. Um. The other narrative for this
year in college best was college basketball's scandal ridden. You know,
just scandals everywhere. Everybody's getting paid money everywhere. Kids don't
go to class, got to pay the players. And then
I was at the Big Ten Tournament this weekend. I'm
watching John bee Line, and you know, John bee Line,
(20:52):
Michigan fans would get on him because he wouldn't get
some of the elite recruits. And yet here's John bee
Line one again, winning a Big Ten tournaments second year
in a row, and a guy who everyone in the
profession seems to go like ya, Bieline, does it the
right way. Your program is much the same right and
that I don't. In order to get into Virginia, you
have to be a true student athlete in order to
(21:14):
stay in Virginia. The same There's never been a whisper
of issues with your program. How do you view the
reality as opposed to the perception that there's these scandals
that are taken down college basketball, as opposed to your
daily life and your program that you're running a top
the A C. C. Well, I mean you, you're your
(21:35):
father was involved in the game, your brothers assistant coach,
you played same you know with me in a lot
of ways. You hear so many things and you just
and as this thing is coming up, I don't know
what to believe. I think there are certainly things going on,
but until you're really knowing there's facts, you hope the
truth will come out. But regardless of what's happening or
(21:55):
what's not happening, that has absolutely zero to do with
what you do with your program and how you decide
to run things. And program is perfect. Of course there's
gonna be issues, but I think that decision has to
be made. And thankfully I was modeled by me and
you know, other coaches I admired, And to me, it's it's,
you know, it's not worth it. Maybe in today's game
(22:17):
the cost hasn't um you know, beens or the prize
has been bigger than the consequences if you get caught,
and and that obviously has to change if this stuff
is really reality, what we're hearing and what we're seeing.
And I think it's too soon to say, because there's
a lot of stuff being floated out there that it's
pretty damaging that I think you have to be careful with.
(22:40):
But it will be good for basketball in the long run,
because it can't go on if there's a lot of
this happening. And again, I have played in the NBA.
I hear the stories, you know, and you just don't
know what's what's legit. But I doesn't matter because, um,
how many times has a kid or somebody close to
a kid asked you for money? Not once? I mean,
(23:01):
but I think they also know we're not going to
partake in any of that. But that's not and you know,
you're you're just I think people understand what your programs about. UM,
and I we haven't had that issue at all. Now
maybe my assistance would say something differently, but that's that's
not I don't know what the percentage of this is.
And um, again, but we're we're not that hasn't we
(23:22):
haven't been approached with stuff like that if you could
sculpt a perfect rule. And part of it is my
personal feeling is I don't understand why the NBA and
college basketball don't work together. College basketball points at the
NBA was their one and done rule. But the truth is,
like most people know or feel like the we're you're
better off in college. Although now Adam Silver is floating
(23:42):
the idea of expanding the G League and and and
having academies, if having lived it and having also played overseas,
you understand different countries, If you could form a way
to get the best possible system, what would it be, Tony?
I have that's problem. I have no idea. I think
there's so many problems. But I think the thing that's
(24:04):
getting lost in all this those what example are we
setting for these these young I mean as adults, as
coaches or whoever, what's going on? What example? How is
this affecting these these young players? I mean, what they're seeing,
but they're being exposed to. That's what bothers me, because
whether you think so or not, you have an opportunity
to to influence and mentor these guys, and I think
(24:25):
they're getting lost in in I don't think there's one
solution because there's not one problem. I don't know. I
do think the one thing I would start with is
if there's legitimate truth found in some of these things,
there has to be pretty harsh, firm penalties that will
make people say, you know what, this isn't just a
slap on the wrist anymore. This is real stuff. I
mean that that's where you'd start. But as far as
(24:47):
one and done and all that stuff, I think you've
got to get enough people and really which I think
there is going to be changed. But what the right
thing is I can't say tell you. Listen, it's been
a magnificent season to watch. I can't tell how much
I appreciate what you do, how you do it. And
then of course the fact that you've joined us. Let's
uh wish you the best of luck at the a

What's going on a man? Big news in the NFL
(25:28):
is the Oakland Raiders have released linebacker Alden Smith. He
was allegedly involved in a domestic violence incident over the
weekend that involved his fiancee. Now the alleged victim told
TMZ that Smith checked himself into a rehab facility yesterday,
but Smith was released today by the Raiders in a
statement DOUG that lasted one sentence, the Oakland Raiders have
(25:50):
released linebacker Aldan Smith. That was it. Tomorrow is the
deadline for the franchise tagg to be placed on players
in the National Football League. Steelers likely to do so
with running back Levyan Bell. According to the NFL Network,
it would be the second straight year he received the
franchise tag, while Cowboys defensive end Marcus Lawrence is expected
to get it as well. According to ESPN, he'd be
paid seventeen million dollars under the tag for the season.

(26:38):
Back to you. You know, it's fascinating to me though,
Dan that uh, I'll watch be line win the Big
Ten tournament. No one thinks that that that be line
of Michigan cheets. Right, you watch Tony Bennett they win
the a Cecene and nobody thinks that they cheat, and
it was it's it's interually. I actually thought that my
my one big takeaway from what Tony Bennett said. He's like, look,
you gotta make the punishment greater. And I think that's
(26:59):
what what's what's lost in this by so many pundits,
so many of my brethren who who cover this, like,
the FBI getting involved is a good thing, not a
bad thing. And here's why the FBI scares the crap
out of everybody. The idea of being under federal indictment
scares the crap out of everybody, right, like we always
(27:20):
get our man. And so with that in mind, like
it brings a little bit of a hammer. It's not
a show cause it's not just getting fired from a
job that ultimately you get a different job. It is
the hammer, and I view it as a good thing.
But it's weird. We talked about it was cheating everywhere,
and yet coaches that nobody thinks they're breaking rules are
(27:43):
the ones actually winning games. Didn't ce Bs Sports. Maybe
Gary Parrish did a an anonymous survey of coaches that
didn't cheat. I think they were one two. Weren't they
in the of coaches that everybody believes to do it
the right way? Yeah? The Bees, Yeah, No, that e
Line is a guy that everybody believes does it the
right Dan does it the right way on the weekends,

you can fix it right the first time. And it's
one of the free services to help you rev up

better turn his Mike on. We weren't recording. That was
(29:12):
that was I saw this story that this from Kevin
Patra Petra. He writes it for um NFL's website, but
he also is this is what they do. It's like
Ian Rapport, who works for the NFL Network, and this
is for NFL dot com. So he quotes it's really
Nean Rappaport story. Ian Rapport of the NFL Network. You
(29:34):
said that Barkley is firmly in the Browns plans at
number one and could be the first overall first running
back taking overall since the Cincinnati Bengals selected Kajana Carter
in now Music. You are not old enough to remember
Joanna Carter? Are you No? I'm not okay? Do you
remember Kajana Carter's NFL career? No? That would be my point.
(29:56):
He I think he tore his knee in training camp,
Is that right, Dan Buyer can? I? Yeah, it was
before he ever suited up for the Bengals in his
first game, I believe, yeah, I mean that was when
you know, that was the beginning of or in the
middle of the Bungles kind of era. So uh, look,
obviously he had a good day at the combine twenty
(30:17):
nine reps. Forty yard dash time was four point four
fast than Devin Hester, ten yards split was one point
five four quicker than DeShawn Jackson, and he had a
forty forty one vertical leap, which is higher than Julio Jones.
He's superman, right, you know? Can you outrace the speeding
bullet can jump over buildings? What was the superman um
(30:38):
able to leave tall buildings on a single bound? Yes,
that's that's say Kwan Barkley. And so the question because
everybody's like, well, you can't take a running back number one,
Well yeah you can, you know the hell you want.
And so I understand there's this idea that, well, the
(31:00):
Browns you need a quarterback, and they have a little
of fomo in Cleveland, little fear of missing out because
they've missed out on Carson Wentz, They've missed out on
Jared Goff, They've they've missed out on quarterbacks in the
last They could have drafted DeShawn Jackson, Deshaun Watson several
times over because drafted Teddy Bridgewater. Lots of guys they
(31:22):
could have drafted but they passed on. So the question
becomes is it is it drafting Barkley too high just
because he's a running back, which is a you know
who's been the best running backs? Sure, Zech Elliott, but
(31:43):
I mean Kansas City got there is in the third round.
I'm somebody who has long stated I don't think you
need to draft a running back in the early rounds.
In the early rounds of the NFL Draft, you are
better off if you can trading out of that pick.
(32:05):
You're better off getting more value if you don't need
a quarterback. But if the Browns truly have identified Baker
Mayfield as the quarterback that they want Baker Mayfield to
be around, it for Baker Mayfield may be around at ten,
he may be around whatever they want, and so why
not go get the best player in the draft? This
(32:26):
is this is I used to do um, you know,
pre and post draft stuff for ESPN. And I remember
when Blake Griffin was drafted. Somebody asked me, well, ld
the best draft? I was like, well, the Clippers did.
They're like, well, they only had one pick, was Blake Griffin. Like,
who's the best player in the draft? Blake Griffin? Who
got him? They did? The same thing was asked to
(32:48):
me when you know Ben Simmons was drafted by the
Philaelphia seventy six ers. Who got the best? Who had
the best draft? Phildelp's seventis? Why? Because they got Ben
Simmons and he was the best player. And I would
say the same thing this year, whoever gets Marvin Bagley
is going to have the best draft. Why because they
got the best player. And if you want to tell
me that the Browns have all kinds of holes to fill,
(33:10):
I'm not gonna tell you that's inaccurate. But I would
also ask you, can you name for me? And the
Browns actually weren't terrible running the football last year? Can
you name for me the Browns starting running back Ramos?
Can you? I cannot off the top of my head. No.
You want to take a shout out at music without looking?
(33:31):
Is it Isaiah crow L? I believe it is Isaiah
crow L. I believe it is Isaiah Crowl. He was
their leading Russia last year with right, do you know
who their second leading Russia was? Second leaning Russia Duke Johnson.
Duke Johnson was their third leading rusher, the second leading
Russia from the running back position. Deshaun Kaiser let him
(33:52):
in yards per carry five point four rush for set
four four nineteen yards. In other words, he was so
under arrest that he to run for his life half
the time. Their third leading rusher. By the way, it's
Kevin Hogan, who's their backup quarterback? Yeah? They have no,
they have isaih row L and Duke Johnson, who are fine.
(34:12):
Or you can go out and get an absolute stud
plug and play any of like, wow, how much does
that matter? I don't know, Ezekiel is pretty good and
pretty pretty important in the Dallas Cowboys season two years
ago and when the season fell off this year. So
am I a running back guy? Like no? I think
running backs are generally overvalued. But if you can get
(34:33):
the best of the best and a guy who can
play on on all three downs like se Kwon Barkley
can because he's good in past protection, he can catch
it out of the backfield, you need a running back
you can play him right away, and there aren't any
This is not a wide receiver draft. It's a quarterback draft,
and they can still get a quarterback. I'm not as
down on the idea of drafting state Kwon Barkley as
(34:56):
normally I would be, because he's so much better than
the field of running backs. I think my issue would be,
why aren't they driving up the value of that number
one picks They can trade out of it and you know,
trade it down to two or trade to three so
that one of those teams can get the quarterback they want.
Knowing Baker Mayfield is still gonna be available, getting more
(35:17):
picks and still getting stake one Barkley, maybe they think
maybe it's the Giants who are going to deap them
into it because the Giants would like stake one bark.
You gotta get the Hooters and try the new smoke Wings.
It's a whole new way to crave wings. All the
taste and half the calories. You can eat twice as
many Hooters. The Steelers are gonna give Levian Bell the
(35:39):
franchise tag again. Is it a big deal, a little
deal or no deal? I'll tell you the deal next.

He needs talking to the Farmers age today, so you
nessess your policies. Game ready, find agent at Farmers dot com.
We are fag. This is game ties side on the
Doug Gottlieb Show, Dan Buyer, what's the game today, Doug,
(36:22):
The game today is big deal, little deal, no deal.
I think there's a big deal that Farmers just cut off, Nelly.
That's uh, see you later, Nellie. I big deal, little
deal or no deal, Doug. Let's start in the NFL
that the NFL network says the Steelers for the second
straight year, are likely to place the franchise tag on
running back la Beyond Bell. Uh little deal Like look,
(36:47):
that's they're they're right to do. So they overpay him
in a guaranteed short term deal. He has been used
a lot. He is really effective. It hurts them some
against the salary cap, but not ridiculously so. And it
gives is gives the power to the team for the
most part, if they have the salary cap. Intact, it
gives the power to the team because uh, now they're
(37:08):
in negotiating from a point of power. They don't have
to do anything. He's gotta if he's gonna play, he's
gonna play for twelve million. Remember Levian told us that
the Super Bowl, you put the franchise tag on him.
He will see you at the end of training camp.
Honest question here, because I'm not sure the answer. Who
do you think falls off like more immediate a quarterback
or a running back? Running back? Running back? You know,
(37:30):
because Peyton's was so sudden, but he have you know,
you have the neck injury. And yeah, that's why I
think the Steelers are playing this the right way. Um,
big deal, a little deal or no deal. Oh, let's
talk a quarterback. The Eagles want at least a first
round pick for quarterback Nick Foles. According to ESPN. That
a big deal, A little deal or no deal. Um,
that's a big deal. That's a big deal, and I
(37:52):
think they're going to ultimately get it. The question is
when did they get it? But that's just smart. That's
what Howie Rosemonds what they did with Sam Bradford, and
I think the timing will be the same with Sa
Bradford as well. Where somebody's in desperate need of a quarterback,
you've got a guy who plug in play in the
right system, can be a can be of good, viable
starting quarterback in the NFL when you fix things around him.
(38:14):
I think that's a big deal. There was a report
this weekend that somebody offered a second round pick of
the Eagles this offseason an a f C team. They said, thanks,
but no thanks. Um, let's go to spring training. Big deal,
a little deal or no deal? That Cubs picture John
Lester is trying to cure as the yips by bouncing
his throws to first base. He's had issues in the
past on comebackers, also in trying to pick guys off
(38:36):
at first. So the Cubs are saying he's doing a
pip into Jordan's sort of pass on a bounce pass.
But yeah, it's that a big deal, a little deal
or no deal. Um, I'm gonna say that's a big
deal because that seems like a really flawed idea. They're
gonna throw bounce passes to first base, Like I just
no matter how much you practice it, if you have
(38:58):
the yips, you have the yips, and you're gonna end
up having the yips throwing the bounce pass, which will
end up being even worse than if you airmails. Yeah,
they were playing a game over the weekend and he
tried it and Anthony Rizzo wasn't at first, it was
another player and it just didn't didn't work out that well. Um,
how about this baseball no big deal, a little deal
or no deal that Chris Burman was the honorary manager
(39:19):
for the San Francisco Giants yesterday kind of no deal, right?
I mean, like Dusty Baker was a manager for the Giants,
and they nearly won the World Burman actually made a
pitching change in the seventh inning. Yet what you you
out and you're in what now? He was rumbling, bumbling
(39:42):
and stumbling to the full uniform for Burman as well. Yesterday, finally,
big deal, a little deal or no deal, Doug, that
one of your former colleagues, Vernon Lundquist, will not be
calling n C Double A Tournament games on CBS for
the first time in twenty years. Ole deal. I mean,
you know, he came off SEC coverage this year, so
(40:04):
burn is an absolute legend. He's an absolute legend. But
it's just it's it's the game's really fast, and he
hadn't been doing college basketball games, and you know, I
brad Nessler's outstanding. I'm not gonna say he's not gonna
be missed. I'm actually really happy that Iron Eagle is
(40:24):
gonna be doing the second Weekend. I worked a year
with Eyon Eagle. He's the best person, I mean and
I've worked He's the best play by play I've ever
worked with. This is game time on the Duck Gottlieb Show.
It's my burn how's my burns? Pretty good? That's very good.
(40:48):
I like Jeff Berman, though, to be honest, that that
was that everybody anyone who's ever worked at ESPN as
a burman what what what? Everybody? Everybody's in the same one.
The most imitated guys are Chris Berman and Bill Peto.
Bill Pido now works for s n Y, but he
used he was the most often imitate. And then everybody
(41:10):
does a can do a vital Oh, let me tell you,
Let me tell you. Let me tell you about Dan Bayo,
dan By, he got a weekend show. Everybody's talking about it,
Dan Baia and Sichevski and Petino. Listen. Patina is a
friend of mine. So I don't think you did anything wrong.
But I don't know Sean Miller, so I'm gonna call
must come back on Twitter. Okay, can the NBA actually
(41:33):
develop an alternative to college basketball? I'll tell you next
in the Doug Otlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. What Up,

combine was is over the weekend a week in ind
We'll get his thoughts on the quarterbacks, his thoughts on
some of the freak shows we saw running forties in
their skibbies. You guys into the combine. I like, I
like to watch him do the forty. I think it's
great to see the big guys the offensive. It's amazing
(42:21):
how those It's amazing how those big guys moved like.
I was fast. Okay, I was. I was. I was
deceptively fast in a sprint. I was. I was the
fastest guy in both of my college basketball teams. And
I don't believe I ever broke four five. I mean
I've ever broke I or broke four fourth whatever. I
(42:42):
never got below four or five when I ran a forty,
like I was four or five eight one time and
like four or five to one time, and and that's
like motoring, And I'm like, again, I was really fair.
These guys are freaks. I had four six my freshman
year Notre Dame, you know, to where I was like
a four or five eight, I think, you know. And
(43:03):
with the hand timer, unless you have the digital timer.
Digital timer usually adds a little bit time to it.
But but I mean for you, it's probably more of
the quickness, right, yes, and we do. There's there's agility
drills as well, and the agility of those guys is incredible.
Like just I'm just telling you like men of that size, right.
(43:23):
Do you see Mark Andrews, for example, Mark Andrews the
tight end in Oklahoma. I love the night I'm block much.
But he's six five eight and he ran a four
or five something forty like that is moving. That's running.
So no, I don't think that overall athleticism laterally um
(43:49):
or you know, in terms there's other parts of athleticism
and and uh there's also a hand eye coordination it
takes to play basketball, where I still think basketball is
the best all around athletes. But in terms of your speed,
jumping freak athletic ability, you have some freaks on display freaks.
Brian Windhorst wrote a column for ESPN dot Com goes
(44:12):
back to when David Stern was commissioner and he celebrated
the age limit. Players had to be nineteen years old
or one year removed from high school. They're graduating class
to be drafted. They want to pro scouts out of
high school gyms. Now he goes on. There is turbulence.
(44:34):
The underbelly of youth and college basketball systems is being exposed.
The NBA is watched and unfold seeing both a responsibility
is the world's leading basketball league and opportunity to move
in to valuable territory. The league is preparing to get
involved with the lead high school basketball players, multiple sources
told ESPN. Current NBA commissioner David Stern several of his
top advisors have been engaged in listening tours and information
(44:56):
gathering missions an array of stakeholders from months. This included
a formal meeting with the NBA p A about adjusting
the so called one and done rule. But Silver's aim
much more comprehensive than simply reopening the door to eighteen
year olds playing in the NBA. Thank listen to this
A plan is expected to include the NBA starting relationships
with elite teenagers while they're in high school, providing skills
(45:18):
to help them develop both on and off the court.
It would ultimately open an alternate path to the NBA
besides playing in college, a way for eighteen year olds
who could earn a meaningful salary either from NBA teams
there's part of an enhanced option developmental G League. Huh. Interesting.
(45:42):
The problem with a lot of this is it already exists.
The G League already exists. Now you can only make
twenty six grand or whatever. You're one year in the
G League, but you're talking seven or eight months. You're
playing with inferior coaches in inferior arenas, in front of
(46:04):
no one with grown ups. And if they're trying to
truly provide and off the court experience that helps players grow,
isn't that what college is for? Like, we're literally going
and if this happens like it might, it might change
college basketball. It might, it might really really impact college basketball. First,
(46:28):
if I was Turner that has the n c A
Tournament through two thousand thirty two, I would be first. Wait,
I just spent eight billion over eight years, and I'm
a partner with the NBA and they're going to devalue
the college basketball product like that. Yeah, there'll be a
(46:49):
phone call. I've played minor league basketball. No one else
I believe that hosts the National Radio show has played
minor league basketball. You don't want this, you don't want this,
and you can say, hey, how is Marvin Bagley helped
by going to Duke. How's he heard now he's part
(47:11):
of the Duke family. He at least was around college
to understand if and when he wants to come back,
it's free. He has something to fall back on. And
even though he's had a little bit of it up
and down, mostly up college basketball season, does he mean
that I'm one pick? Michael Porter Jr. Has played two
(47:35):
minutes this season, two had back surgery. It still gonna
be a top six seven pick? Explained to me the
downside in college basketball because I I fail to see
it if you're trying to provide an experience on and
off the court, the better coaches maybe not for the NBA,
and I'll I'll grant you. I watch college basketball coaches
(47:56):
and a lot of these guys have not evolved. They're
struggling to a bad simmo as being played differently, and
they're struggling to evolve because they've always On the other hand,
they understand how to completely teach a player and all
around game. And I actually think we're doing the opposite
of what we should do. The hard thing is the
right thing. It's hard for a reason. Let's take Alonzo Ball,
(48:24):
take Ben Simmons take recent success stories that are one
and done right, if you were to make players stay
for two years or three years like you do in football,
it stands the reason you could get them to buy
in more the team concept to playing defense, and you'd
have college college coaches the opportunity to fix people's shots,
(48:48):
all right, Like what did you c l a? Anybody
asked him about why you did? Why did you fix
a Lonzo ball shot? Well, he's only gonna be here
for six months. You fix it, you break it down.
It ends up taking a year or two years in
order to build it back up, and then ultimately it'll
be better than it was before. Ben Simmons actually had
a year off as all. As NBA coaching is so
(49:09):
much better, I do think NBA game coaching is better
because the players are better, so the spacing is better. Yeah,
it's a lot easier to coach when any time a
guy gets an open twenty ft shot, he's gonna make
it right. That's the NBA. But in terms of player development,
there's not a better player development place than college if
you picked the right college. Ben Simmons wasn't truly invested
(49:31):
in getting better as a person or as a player
when he's at l s U. And he obviously didn't
invest that much when he said at with the seventies,
six years in his year off because his shots not better.
He's still a great talent. And anybody who tells you
that I'm killing Ben Simmons, you don't know how. You
don't understand. I've said he was the best of the
one and done the best, but it's hard to play
(49:54):
without a jump shot, and he has yet to develop one.
Might be shooting with the wrong hand. You could only
get that type of fix if he had to stay
in school longer. I've played minor league basketball. This is
not what you want eighteen year old kids to go.
Do you want to put them around other eighteen to
(50:14):
twenty two year old kids who they're going to live around,
they're going to work around. We have a really good
system that we're trying to make perfect, and there is
no perfect. Here's the best example I can give. I
was on with Nick right last week and we had
this discussion, and Nick went to Syracuse on a communications scholarship.
(50:35):
Syracuse has maybe the best communication school in the country. Syracuse,
Missouri Northwestern ares on a state like those are the
best journalism schools whatever, especially sports journalists. They're great. It's
like signing with Duke. Why would you go to Duke
when Nick used to do radio? Right, you can do radio.
(50:58):
I'm going to Jonas to do and go to college
outstanding at radio. You do it because you're part of
the Syracuse mafia. You make connections, you do learn some
things as well. And so here's the perfect example of
the value of a scholarship. He was on a communication scholarship.
I wasn't a basketball scholarship. Men, you know me. Broadcasting
(51:20):
classes I took in my entire five years of college,
not one, no one, And am I gonna tell you
the numbers. But we talked about what he made. He's
like eight dollars an hour or something was his first
radio job. Mine was exponentially higher. Didn't mean as better.
(51:40):
It was just I had built up a name for
myself because I played college basketball. But more than anything, like,
you need that time between high school and the pros.
And if Adam Silver doesn't recognize it, and players don't
recognize it, most adults do, what are we doing? What
what are you doing? What are we doing? Oh? Well,
(52:01):
in these other countries. They have this great system of
developing players. They do really well. I think Australia does
a great job. They do. They have the Australian Institute
of Sport. But then they come over here and they
play in college basketball, and they also, by the way,
train them to play the right way. It's almost like
(52:25):
a college type of atmosphere, a college type of style.
And even that. How many assees are there in the NBA?
Seven eight? Right? Oh? The Spaniards they do it better.
How many Spaniards are the NBA? The Greek freak, He's unbelievable.
(52:46):
How many great players there in the NBA. Do do
I think we could do better in terms of player development? Yeah?
Do I think the college basketball and the NBA could
work together better? Sure? But um, Steph Curry, Play Thompson,
Draymond Greene, Andre Goodala, mm hmmm, who else? When Kevin
(53:13):
Duran only was one and done? All of them are
from the United States. Seemed to be pretty good, right, oh,
Eastern Rockets, James Harden played Arizona State, Chris Paul two
years at at Wake Fource Trevor Ees. You see like this,
it's not the worst deal in the world. It's not
the worst set up in the world. And generally guys
(53:36):
that stay longer, like Josh Hart developed greatly Calkuzma five
years he developed. So I it's a false narrative, nothing
more than that. I mean. The perfect example of how
players aren't ready at that age is what does every
(53:57):
NBA team say or do if they want to guarantee
they're gonna lose games? To Tank Ryan Music? What is it?
Play the young guys, Play the young guys? You know why?
Because young guys aren't good enough. And here we are
fighting over young guys that everybody knows isn't good enough,
and we're entitling them to a chance to be professionals
(54:18):
while not providing them with something that's gonna last them
far longer. In a system that works. Does it work
for every single person? No? But no system works for
every single person. There just isn't one that There is
no utopia. There is no utopia. As conditions on the

The kind of the big thing we're looking for in
college basketball trying to help you in your bracket? Is
is anybody really good? Right? They're all like NFL Draft.
I think we got some guys that are really good.
I was reading this piece on KEM Griffin. You guys,
did you guys watch this over the weekend at all?
(56:48):
So Griffin Murray played Central Florida and Cinch FLA has
great undefeated season. They you know They're national champions in
their own world, right there, fingers Nash champions. There we go.
But he only has one hand. He's you know, Jim
Abbott style, and due repped out twenty reps on the
(57:10):
bench and then he ran a four three eight forty
fastest time ever for a linebacker. But I want to
ask Doug for our who of course rode about him
today and Bleacher Report, and I want to ask him
at the quarter right, he joins, he's there. Uh, Doug
joins us on the Doug Otup Show here on Fox
Sports Radio. That's how the Griffin thing is. Some of
(57:32):
the wildest stuff I've ever seen, Doug. You with me? Yeah, okay,
some of the wildest stuff I've I've ever seen. Um,
how how viable is he as an NFL player with
one hand like a linebacker? Do you need a second hand? Yeah?
It's interesting because of course the it's such an inspirational
(57:53):
motivational story here. And then if you're a coach or
a GM or a scout, you go back to the
tape when you're when you're back in old you and like,
all right, you know I've seen you see before, but
how does this really work? And when we call a linebacker.
I mean he's not a linebacker in the you know,
Derrick Brooks, Bobby Wagner style. He's not really a samura
will he's actually they move around. I mean he he's
(58:18):
a slot defender. He's a box safety and really interestingly,
at two d seven pounds, he was one of the
most effective pass rushers, like edge rushers in the n
c a A last year. He's had about I think
eighteen point five sacks in the last two years. He
just careens off the edge and I'll tell you, I
(58:38):
mean he reminds me a lot of Dion Buchanan, the
sort of money backer multi position guy for the Arizona Cardinals,
because he's running around. It's how like his butt is
on fire. I mean he will, he will be part
of every play. He's one of the more high effort
guys in this draft class. And you know we're me.
I put say a third to fourth round grade on him.
(59:00):
He had two interceptions. He looked good in the hands drills.
I mean he has actually used his left arm as
if you remember Tom Dempsey, the kicker who had half
a foot and used that as just kind of a
ballast and and use for more power. Um, shakine Griffin
(59:21):
has actually figured out how to punch out footballs and
force fumbles with his left arm. So whereas a lot
of people would use as a handicap or a liability
or oh this is why I will never succeed, his
attitude is just different and he doesn't matter, and I'll
turn it into an advantage. Doug Gotlive show Fox Sports Radio.
That's the uh, that's the voice of Doug Farr, who,
(59:42):
of course you can read his work in Bleach Report
following on Twitter as well. Let's get to the quarterbacks
who had the best weekend. I think Josh Allen did. Um.
We all knew about the arm and he threw its
seven yards on a rope and we all know you
can do that. Um. He had reminded me a bit
of Mike Glennon on his tape. Great arm kind of dangly,
(01:00:03):
didn't really look good when he needed to be quick.
And I think in the throwing drills he did a
really he had done a really nice job of shortening
his footwork, becoming more efficient with his lower body. Um,
and I think he availed himself really well. I mean
the guy there there are teams and evaluators who are
like big guy, bigger and that's all I want. And
(01:00:23):
if that's all you want, Josh Allen is your guy.
But I think if you want someone who can, you know,
have more escapability, not mobility in the Lamar Jackson sense,
but just moving around in the pocket, I think he's
showing that he's trying to fix the mechanical issues that
may have stop that. Um So, you know, I think overall,
(01:00:46):
Josh Ellen probably did himself the most help Well, what
about what what are you hearing about? Whiteboard magic? You know,
so much of the evaluation the quarterback position is a
neck up evaluation. What are you hearing as far as
who did well and who did not? I know, yeah,
just from what I've heard, Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield
and neither one of that. Neither one of them surprised
(01:01:07):
me as far as that because we're known as football
smart kids. Josh Allen was certainly um, you know, Lamar
Jackson I think does better at that than people assume.
Bobby Petrino land what is essentially a pro style offense.
Lamar was making second and third reads. So I think
he's going to surprise people, but probably Rosen and Mayfield
(01:01:29):
did the best as far as that goes, Yeah, no,
what I heard, I heard Mayfield was the best along
with Rosen and Donald. I heard Allen was substantially behind,
and uh and Lamar Jackson was was a good was
considered a project in terms of his football, like you,
which was surprising even those people I heard it from,
because of because of the coaching he had gotten at Louisville.
(01:01:50):
I think, you know, I I don't want to get
into why. We can all speculate as to why I
think he's loving. Put it this way, I think he's
underrated in that regard and in the right offense. So
show that. And yes, as far as Allen goes, you
look at that Wyoming offense, there's a lot he wasn't
asked to do that he will be asked to do
in the NFL. And when that's the case, guys tend
(01:02:10):
to struggle because the amount of information you have to
digest and spit out and react to and master is
enormous compared to what he's used to. That's that's if
there's one guy who's a project mentally, not to impute
his intelligence, which is, you know, the the level of
stuff he's gonna be having to deal with. From that perspective,
I think Allen is probably the biggest project Doug far
(01:02:32):
joining us on the Doug Gotlip Show. Say, Kwan, Barkley
kind of took the thing by storm with all the
numbers that he put up. But does that make him
Does that make a running back a position of some
level of declining return? Um? Does that make Does that
make him viable for that number one pick in your mind? Well,
it's interesting. If you would to ask me who the
(01:02:53):
two best players in this draft class are, regardless of
positional value, regardless of anything else, I'd probably say Barkley
and the guards from Notre Dame Quenton Nelson. And no
one is ever going to draft a guard first overall,
even if they're the best player. And you know whether
other people would be about Quenton Nelson or not, he's
certainly the top five guy. Um Sklon Barkley, you know,
(01:03:15):
is certainly going to test out well. He's a tremendously
agile back, total big play guy. The one thing I
would say about him is when he didn't have clearer
lanes blocked for him, I saw more stops from him
that I saw from a guy I'll mention as someone
in the right system I find even more intriguing back,
(01:03:36):
which is LSU's Darius Guys, who ran pretty well last
year through some injuries, ran a stub four or five.
I've heard you get some teams at the time they
came out at like Safty with five, and he's a
true power back in the Marshawn Lynch Since I think,
depending on your system, Darius guys might be more attractive
(01:03:58):
because the visibility to run through intact and create plays
sort of pass where things fall apart. I think if
you know as a second level runner, as a big
play guy, I think sae Quon Barkley is better, But
I like Geiss is just a pure power back. So
it just depends on what flavor you want. Yeah, the
l s u Derres guys, he's amazing, amazing talent and
(01:04:21):
would probably be undervalued if uh in in comparison to
what could be overvalued wherever he goes. Um last if
you went to the l s u offerens through the
ball like eight times last year, so he was facing
a few stack boxes. No, I I know it's really
hard to tell out of ls you like look even
when they had oh b J and Jarvis Landry. I
don't think anyone really we'd know they would be they
(01:04:44):
would the two would be this good like and they
actually put up something we didn't know about Beckham until
he blew up the combine, right, I mean that's when
it really happened. So I mean it's it's it's kind
of fascinating to me. Um, okay, give me the name
of one guy who you hadn't even thought of being
a first round draft pick or early second round draft pick,
but after the combine you're like, you know what I
(01:05:05):
need to think about that now? Uh? Oh gosh. Names
is the kid the cornerback from Iowa And I'm really
sorry and the name is escaping me. Uh, quarterback from Iowa.
I know you're talking about the big the big name
Iowa cornerback. Yeah, un didn't get no. Desmond King was
(01:05:25):
last year. Um. Shoot, not Josh Jackson, is it? Yeah? Yeah,
Josh Jackson. He's a Texas kid six one huh No.
I mean he's originally from the state of Texas, is
what I'm saying. Right. Um, you know the way he
did the drills, you kind of and again you always
(01:05:47):
want to go back and match it up to the tape,
and that was the guy. I just thought, gosh, you know,
everything looks in line. Um. Conversely, I think it got
like Sony Michelle from Georgia looks really quick on tape,
didn't necessary look as quick in the drills. Um. So
you know, it's it's always interesting to see how those
(01:06:08):
things match up. By the way, I don't know if
you saw this. I read this in the Des Moines
Register about josh Jackson's Joshua Jackson's time. He was it
was first day four or four nine. Every was like,
oh yeah, first round, picked top fifteen, no question. Then
they that was the unofficial. Then it was downgraded to
a four or five six. So we'll see what he
does is pro day the fourth round. Yeah, go back
(01:06:29):
and watch him with covers. That's all I gotta say.
Do great stuff, man, this is a good article today.
I appreciate you join us. All right, thank you. All right,
that's Doug Doug Ferrur joining us from Bleacher Report. As

(01:06:51):
D buyo what he got for me? Well, Doug. Draft
prospects sure the talk of the town the last couple
of days, but free agency is soon beginning. In the
National Football League, Kirk Cousins we expect to be a
free agent and a report from CBS Sports is not
only was it a final four over the weekend, but
it could be down to a final two as the
Vikings and Jets are the front runners for Cousin services.
(01:07:14):
There was also a report that the Jets felt that
they were lagging behind the Vikings in those rankings. The
Dallas Cowboys have placed the franchise tag on defensive lineman
to Marcus Lawrence, so the defensive end if he signs
the franchise tag, would get over seventeen million dollars for
the eighteen season. That is, if he doesn't get a
long term deal. Tomorrow is the deadline for teams to
(01:07:34):
use the franchise tags. Dealers are expected to do so
on Levy on Bell for the second straight year. According
to the NFL Network, Well, the Raiders every lease linebacker

altercation over the weekend and his fiancee that He said

the incident. This according to TMZ, the Eagles reportedly want

at least a first round pick for quarterback Nick Foles.
That's according to ESPN, all the eleven year of here

(01:08:16):
week of action Doug because of a growing strained Lakers
have won their last five. Uh. Antonio Camardi, um, he
wasn't one with all the kids. She was with the kids. Man,
that's gonna hurt. I feel like one was. I remember
my dad when I told my dad I was we
were engaged and we're getta get married right after college.
(01:08:38):
And he's like, well, what do you what are you
thinking as far as kids? I was like, I don't know.
I want to have them. Yeah, I guess you have
them like, you know kids expensive. That was my my
dad's father's son time. You know kids expensive. That's what
he said. That's it. That was the talk. Good talk dad.
He's not wrong. He's not wrong, though, crazy expensive man.
(01:09:00):
Antonio Camarti, he dude, I thought he would play until
his legs felt. Maybe his legs did follow up and
he can't move at all, right because and those those uh,
those bills, they do not stop coming. They don't, they don't,
they don't go like, oh oh sorry, Mr Camarty, we
know you're not playing the NFL anymore, so we're gonna
catch you some slack. We're gonna catch some slack. You
(01:09:22):
gotta get the hooters and try the new um oh,
actually it's the auto zone one. Sorry, let's take two
on that auto zone fixed finder tool keeps check engine
lights in check by troubleshooting the real problem so you
can fix it right the first time. And it's one
of the free services to help rev up your refund

(01:09:45):
our litany of sponsors were sold out, I just think today,
so I'm just gonna just flat out apologize. Don't call
my boss, don't text the show I suck. It's a problem.
We'll figure it out. There's this kind of coffee I like.
Do you guys are aware of nitro coal brew? Yeah,
(01:10:07):
you're aware of it now. I've actually come to like
the Starbucks nitral coal brew as much as I like.
There's a coffee bean and tea leaf. It's a West
Coast company. There are some used to be more national.
They've retracted some and they're gonna expand yet again. Anyway,
I love this, uh, the coffee being in tea leaf
nitro coal brew. But for whatever reason, sometimes neither of
(01:10:29):
them have it. Sometimes neither of them have it, Like,
it doesn't make any sense to me. How do you
conduct a business like I've I've gone into coffee being
in tea leave and walked him like and they're like, hey, Doug,
what's up? Like can I get my because you know
they know you once you go to the same place
I get up every day when I'm home. A dog
(01:10:52):
like puts his big jug head next to me, starts
nudging the bed to get me to take him to
the park so we can go take a go number
two in the bushes. He goes deep in the bushes.
Crazy thing ever, you can't even go back there and
pick it up anyway. See whatever, he goes back there.
Then we go get my wife. She gets the Starbucks.
I get to I get coffee being tea leave walk
in like, you know, sorry, somebody forgot to make it yesterday.
(01:11:16):
Doesn't that seem like a prerequisite for running a coffee
place that somebody makes coffee. I don't. I don't right,
And this this will happen at Starbucks as well with
the nitro cobrew, like, yeah, sorry, we just did not
fire that thing. Welcome to Paul's Pizza. Yeah, can I
get a cheese pizza pizza? No? Do you like some breadsticks?
We have a tasty bread sticks. I'll go to mcdonal well,
(01:11:38):
I guess I go to MacDonald Sometimes I'll say, like,
I'll take a shake. I'm sorry, sir, how many shakes?
How do you have shakes? Donald stakes are good, they
are delicious. But it's like, I think McDonald still has
the best fries. I just maybe it's I grew up
and I always I tell people all the time, like
if you're gonna get McDonald's fries, tell them you'll wait
for the next batch and you get a hot one hot. Yes,
(01:12:00):
my tongue to have a flye mark on it, right,
if it's possible to have grease dripping from the French
fries and drip onto my tongue and singe my tongue,
you know. Look, there's also you gotta have the right
percentage of salt. You know. You gotta have the salt,
you gotta have the heat, you gotta have it all.
But you would never go to a burger. You never
(01:12:20):
go to a burger Like, sorry, Mr Godley, we're out
of burgers of Burger's burgers. I don't know about drinking
something called nitro though. That's infused so it kind of
has like a beer type of foam at the top.
It's very smooth, it's not bitter. It's great. Um. I
like a little flavoring added to it because I'm soft
that way. You guys been paying attention to the Lakers.
(01:12:44):
I understand that it's Tanka Pelooza in the NBA. I
mean there are It is amazing to watch these teams.
Atlanta played Phoenix yesterday and this is one of those
games to which you watch and the players they're not
trying to live. Not anybody's doing the Headache Smith. Headie
(01:13:04):
Smith was the guy who through games for Arizona State.
It's only guys are throwing the ball away or shooting
air balls. No, no, no, they're playing hard. But you
can tell coach you're looking up at the score, like,
we want to lose this game because we want to
secure draft status. It's hard to determine how good somebody
actually is just because they're winning games, if they're playing
(01:13:24):
against one of the bottom teams in the NBA and
a team is trying to tank. But I think we
could all conclude that the Lakers are a pleasant surprise
and think about what they've done. They've won five in
a row, four and I'm not going crazy over it
because they've beaten three teams. They got to going by
(01:13:45):
beating three tank teams, right. They beat the Mavericks who
are tanking, the Kings who are tanking, the Hawks who
are super tanking. Then they beat the Heat though with
the Heat are pretty good, and they beat the Spurged
by four. Now they have the Trable, another playoff caliber team.
What's more interesting is I think two fold One, they've
shed themselves of guys who weren't going to be around,
(01:14:08):
but also we're kind of more in it for their
numbers and for their current stats more than the future.
So they've got rid of those guys. And the improvement
in Lonzo ball. He I'm not gonna test it here
and tell you he's a great shooter just because he
made six threes against San Antonio. Some of that is
you're what they call you're open for a reason. Why
(01:14:28):
is the open for a reason? We want him to
shoot the basketball, and the only way to get guys
to guard you is to make shots. He hit six
out of ten threes a matter of fact, um, since
he's come back from injury, and I don't know if
you guys saw this stat. Since he's come back from injury,
he's taken twenty two threes. He's made fourteen of them.
(01:14:52):
So he's shooting better shots. He's shooting the basketball better,
playing within himself, and playing excellent defense. I'm not willing
to tell you that Anzo is a bust. Was it
was a bust, but they were a little disappointed in
how far back he was in terms of learning curve,
and he's improving. And then defensively, he's just got great instincts,
great feel things you can't teach Meanwhile, the calves are
(01:15:19):
aggressing towards the mean, the thunder regressing towards the mean,
and Hope still very much alive. That to this young nucleus,
you can add of Paul George and Lebron James. It's
gonna be interesting. You gotta get to Hooters and try
the new smoke wings, whole new way to crave wings
with all the taste and half the calories. You can
(01:15:39):
eat twice as many Hooters. Nick Wright is buying the

Fox Sports Radio. You have been in a mosh pit there, Ramos, No,
(01:16:05):
that would scare me. I think I've never been a
fan of that. But music, yeah, definitely, yeah. I had
to think about it because I couldn't remember, but I
just remember the that I have definitely what what who
was playing? Uh? It was this band called Mode Step. Okay,
so like it's like an electronic hard rock kind of thing. Yeah,
(01:16:26):
you have floated. No, you just smashed in a bunch
of dudes. Yeah, that's the that's the most white guy
thing ever, terrible idea, right like Mexican. So that's probably
why I did not get into that. Did you say
that on an okay, that your your Mexican heritage doesn't
preclude you. What what do the cholos do? What do they?
What do they? They do? That? Do they? What do they?
(01:16:49):
What do they? Ramos? You're gonna get in the mash
bit stay away for that, Ramos. Yeah, Ramos, that's not
that's not not your deal. Um, that does remind me.
I went down to Sun God Festival is back. It
used to be at you see San Diego. I don't
know if it's still there anyway. Um and yeah, we
got in the mosh pit with some guys. But anyway,
a buddy mine got floated and lost his wallet and
(01:17:10):
a shoe. And I remember it was the lead singer
of Real Big Fish. It's up on stage and uh
said Nick beers on you dude, because somebody floated up
his wallet. They started throwing credit cards that have fallen out,
and they had fallen out of people's wallets. The very
white guy, white guy thing to do. Right. Yeah, Like
(01:17:32):
there's a lot of things that a white guys do.
They're dumb. That's one of the dumbest that's up there.
That's up there. And now the auto Zone Fixed Finder
tool keeps check engine lights in check by troubleshooting the
real problem so you can fix it right the first time.
It's one of the free services to help rev up
(01:17:53):
your refund this tax season getting the zone Auto Zone.
Nick right Um on First Things First had this to
say about the idea that the Rockets joke in the playoffs,
and I feel like there is just a level of
almost misinformation going on about what these guys actual histories are.
So let's start with the head coach, because you're like,
I had D'Antoni teams in the regular season, they're great.
(01:18:16):
But then in the postseason in two thousand five, when
the Sons maybe could have won the title coach by
Mike D'Antoni, they make the Western Conference Finals, but their
second or third best player, Joe Johnson, broke his face,
so they lost to a fifty nine wins Spurs team.
There's no shame there. In two thousand six, they make
the Western Conference Finals and they lose to a sixty
(01:18:37):
win MAVs team. In two thousand seven, they're playing a
fifty eight win Spurs team, a team that if they
beat they would have won the title. Because on the
other side of the bracket was a way too young
Cleveland Cavalier team. Well what happened there? Guys got suspended
after Robert ory hip check Steve Nash knocked him and
the guys ran on the court. And then in two
thousand and eight, the last year of the danti On era,
(01:19:00):
they lose in the first round two a Spur sing
with a better record. Like, I don't see the choking
there that I'm supposed to believe has happened. James Harden
and the Rockets have played to their seed every year
but one in the since he's been there. Like the
idea that these guys have some history of wilting in
the playoffs from coach to best players, second best player,
(01:19:21):
I just don't think the history backs that up. So, yeah,
I believe in the Rockets. Yeah, I don't think that, Oh,
the postseason is gonna be some boogie monster for him.
Those are explanations, But when there's repeated explanations for teams
not climbing to the absolute top of the mountain. They
become excuses, right, and like, look, do I think Mike
D'Antoni is a much better coach and is revered in
(01:19:44):
NBA circles for his style of coaching? Yeah, yeah, I
think you'd be underrated. Let's not kid ourselves about James Harden.
He was flat out bad at the Thunder in the
NBA Finals so much that's one of the reasons that
they didn't want to pay. They don't want to go
into the luxury tax threshold, but they want too. Happy
with the fact that he kept going. You kept going
to strip clubs. Don't you have his like number retired
(01:20:04):
in the strip club in Houston supposedly, like he is
a strip club Hall of Famer um. And when they
went to the Western Conference finals a couple of years
ago with James Harden like that was only because the
Clippers got hurt. Clippers were smoking them and they came
back in. And when the Clippers got had when when
Chris Paul got hurt, which which by the way, would
(01:20:28):
be an explanation why Chris Paul and the Clippers never
got on the second round, but they never got on
the second round. We can make explanations all we want.
The fact is that Harden has been to one NBA
finals and it didn't go well. Chris Paul has never
been to a conference finals, and Dan Tony has never
been to an NBA finals. Those are their best players.
(01:20:50):
And it's a scheme that is a very offense and
three point heavy scheme. And oh yeah, by the way,
remember Nick used to do radio in Houston. He's tight
with Romory and he's gonna keep banging that drum. We're
all missing it. He knows it. And maybe he's right,
maybe they're Maybe their talent has gotten to level the
Golden State Warriors. The difference though, is that when the
(01:21:12):
Warriors are locked in there just that much better, defensively
that much better, and they always have a third star
player as opposed to James Harden, now Chris Paul and
who Joe Johnson feels like he's over the hill. It
feels like he's over the hill. But look, it's gonna
be fun. My thought is has kind of always been
(01:21:36):
that what's what's gonna happen with the what's what's likely
to happen is they'll struggle earlier on the playoffs like
they did last year. Last year that a great regular season,
Harden probably could have been the m v P, but
they didn't even get to face the Golden State Warris
as they lost the San Antonio Spurs. And if the
(01:21:57):
Spurs get Kawhi Leonard back, I would have I would
have less issue betting on the Spurs to reach the
conference finals than I would the Houston Rockets. They might
both play the Warriors before getting to the finals. Of
my now with the Rockets one, but the Spurs might
play the Warriors beforehand anyway, But I still don't have
a level of confidence that they can be dispersed if
(01:22:17):
Kawhi Leonards healthy. When your best player doesn't play both ends,
you are who your best player is, especially in basketball
our thanks to Greenwood, South Carolina. Listen on one or
two seven FM and ten nine AM. What up from
your boy? What if I did that instead of Red Liners?
(01:22:39):
What up your boy? You guys rolling good? Good? Talk
to some college hoop next hour, but I'm coming next,
Let's talk to some NFL draft Draft combine took place
in Indy. They put all the quarterbacks in the white
board and one guy wasn't as good as the rest?
So why is everybody going to avoid talking about it?
(01:23:03):
We won't. We'll do so next in the Dug Gotlip Show,
Fox Sports Radio. What off it's a Doug Gotlip Show,
Fox Sports Radio. I hope you had a great sports weekend.
I hope you're getting ready for March Madness, the NFL Draft,
major League baseball. Gosh, conny a major league baseball? Not
(01:23:24):
because you know, you get so hyped about talking major
league baseball. Hey, let's talk about the Rays bullpen. Huh uh.
Nothing drives the number of national radio like the Rays bullpen.
Talk raise bullpen? Eight seven seven on Fox? Can you name?
How many Rays can you name? Oh? Oh, there's a
(01:23:47):
good game. How many Tampa Bay Rays can you name?
That's that's a great challenge music? Can you name even one?
I'm gonna go with Chris Archer. Very nice, very nice,
solid work. That's one. Um, what do you got there, Ramos.
(01:24:10):
I'm gonna go out in a limb here. I'm gonna
say Chris Archer, picture Tampa Bay Rays. That's why I
was gonna say Chris Archer. So he just took it.
But why did you raise your hand. I didn't raise
my hand. You your hand out like this. I was talking.
I was trying to tell Dan that he wanted to
get in on this. That's also I have my hand
up to hold for you to hold for him. So
(01:24:32):
we'll get that communication stuff worked out later. The name
everybody would throw out would be Evan Longoria, right it
was now with the San Francisco Giants that one I
do know. Um, they still have Logan Morrison. I don't
think so either, right, I think Logan Morrison is he's
somewheres like he's Minnesota. I want to say anyway enough,
(01:24:54):
I'm I am at least excited. I do like I mean,
I like look, I like going to baseball games, I
like talking about I like baseball in general, being like sports,
being on TV. It's kind of easy, it's whatever. But
the NFL Draft fascinates me because no matter how often
we get to it, we make these arguments about what
(01:25:16):
matters and what doesn't matter. There are tangibles, There are intangibles.
There are you know, simple feats of athleticism, and there
are there are some things that mm hmm, there are
some things that are not It has nothing to do
with being athletic, and I feel like we're in this
(01:25:41):
Lamar Jackson thing to which there's a certain amount of
college basketball, college football pay for players type of deal, right,
which is and I had a discussed I had lunch
with a buddy yesterday who was like, look, I think
it's a really good opportunity for of the kids to
(01:26:03):
get a college education, to be around people and to
play a sport and have a ton of fun. And yeah,
maybe there's some guys that could capitalize on the moment
a little bit better, but most of those guys, well
it's not all capitalized on it after their career as
they're either a local legend and they do the local broadcast,
or they write a book, or they use it to
(01:26:25):
get their first job, or they used to get their
first job in professional sports. It's like, but the problem
with the argument is that because there's a substantial number
of players affected by the limitations on when you can
declare for the NFL or NBA draft, which again, these
are rules set up by the pros and collectively bargainer
(01:26:47):
prawn by the by the NBA and NFL Players Association,
right Like, you can blame whoever you want. This was
agreed to in a collective bargn agreement by the players Association.
So they said, okay, but there's a substantial number of
guys that are are black that are affected by it.
And so occasionally you'll get into a discussion about pay
(01:27:08):
for play and then some gonna say, like, well, you're
limiting what young black men can get your racist like, hm, well,
my first argument is always like, well, no, I'm not.
The second one is the truth is, one of the
biggest problems in the black community is the inability to
(01:27:30):
get out of a tough neighborhood because you don't your
parents didn't go to college, you can't afford it or
get into and you can't take your your You're more
likely any sort of negative, any sort of knock on
a demographic. You know, you smoke more, you drink more,
you're in jail more often, you make less money, you
(01:27:52):
have more kids that you can't support, any of those
negatives for any demo, white, Black, Hispanic. It's all made
the numbers grow exponentially the fewer years of education you have,
you go to college, and it's just a stronger likelihood
of success. And so if anything like if you want
(01:28:15):
to say Hey, look, I just want more diversity, more
opportunities for black college graduates. Why are we chasing him
out of college to chase after the almighty dollar in
the short term when there's way more dollars to be made.
But like, look, there will always be people that will say, well,
you want to limit how much money black kids black
(01:28:35):
kids can make, you're a racist, to which I'm not.
But there's not I can't really, It's just not a
part of the conversation you want to have because there's
no real proof to it. On the other hand, you
have the the argument about Lamar Jackson, which is, hey,
(01:28:59):
was Lamar Jackson asked to work out with the wide receivers.
None of the teams asked him to work at play
wide receiver. He has said he doesn't want to play
wide receiver. He said he wants to be a quarterback,
And so I guess we're gonna value his quarterback. And
you'll hear some of these teams or some leaks kind
(01:29:20):
of tiptoe around it. No, he's he He is not
terribly accurate. He throws it far, you can throw it hard.
There's nothing specifically wrong with his release. There are times
in which his footworks not great, and so he becomes inaccurate.
He just has sometimes when he misfires, I mean badly, badly.
He's better on the inside roads than on the outside roots,
(01:29:43):
which is usually what separates college quarterbacks from NFL quarterbacks.
So there's some are some arm issues, not a ton
of them. There's some arm issues, there's some accuracy issues.
But I talked to two t gms that were like, look,
we had all those guys at the white board. Josh
Allen wasn't great the white board. Do you just okay?
Not great? Sam Donald was great, Rosen was great, Baker
(01:30:07):
Makefield was through the through the roof great. Lamar Jackson struggled.
But if Lamar Jackson struggles with the wonder lick, or
if he struggles with what's the football aptitude of it,
you'll have people say, well, that's race, Like, no, it's not.
No one's ever had any issue with Jamis Winston, who
(01:30:29):
had a super high football intellect. It's just not we're
gonna get to that place. Do I think racism still
exists outside of sports? I do not nearly as much
as it used to. I think it's more pronounced in
much smaller numbers. Because of social media and because of
our supreme desire to try and eliminate and you're never
(01:30:52):
gonna eliminate all anti race feelings or whatever. But when
people say that Mark Jackson's mental aptitude for the position
isn't where it should be, it's has nothing to do
with the fact that he's a black kid. Has to
do with the fact that, in comparison to the other
quarterbacks previously named in this exact same draft, he wasn't
(01:31:16):
as sharp on the white board, and it wasn't really
close based upon the people that I know that interviewed him.
So gonna be interesting, But I don't think the entire
the league is not racist. Bill Polling is not a racist.
Other analysts aren't racist if they don't buy in. If
(01:31:36):
thirty two teams pass on Lamar Jackson the first round
and thirty two pass on him in the second round,
that doesn't make him racist. By the way, there was
a lot most people didn't have Tim Tebow going in
the first round. Tim Tebow lacked some of the aptitude,
didn't go through his reads quickly. Very simplistic college offense
(01:32:00):
would tuck it and run it, had bad thieves. Tim
Tebow was fast in the forty but had bad feet
in the pocket. No one ever called one to call
Tim Tebow dumb or say you didn't have the mental
aptitude to do it because you felt bad because Tebow
was such a nice guy. It wasn't. The sharpest knife
(01:32:20):
in the drawer doesn't make him a bad guy. Teams
generally want the smartest guy in the room and the
most affable guy in the room to be their leader
on the football field as conditional. The field chained, so
can your insurance. And he needs talking with the Farmers

Doug Otlip Show Fox Sports Radio. He covers games for
Fox Sports One. He's also got his own high power
radio show in Omaha. He played little ball at KU
played ball at Uh. See you that's Creighton University. He's
(01:34:46):
Nick nick bah colleague friend of mine, joining us on
the Doug Otlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um,
we were told that there is gonna be this massive
upheaval in college basketball and this huge scandal, and yes,
Rick the Tino went down for it, and and you
go back a week ago, we thought Sean Miller was
going down for it. But you have to see, really
(01:35:07):
kind of any proof of money changing hands? Like do
we all freak out prematurely? Nick, or is there just
no proof yet? Like what's your take on the scandal
which has yet to happen. Well, I mean I think
it's all The truth is always somewhere in the middle,
you know, you get the people of the initial outrage
is always too far one way and the reality is
(01:35:31):
that you probably had to let the dust settle a
little bit. I certainly don't think it's it's nothing. I
think this is going to be some kind of tipping
point for some kind of change. Now what that looks like,
I'm not totally sure, but it is incredible to think
about what the talking points in the narrative was around
Sean Miller just a couple of weeks ago, and now
the dude feels like he is, you know, he's firmly
(01:35:52):
on the sideline. Is gonna be okay at least for
the rest of the season, and so we'll see what happens.
But yeah, I don't I don't think it's certainly it's
certainly just not one of those things where you go,
it's much to do about nothing, But it's, uh, you know,
it'll be interesting to see when when the dust sells,
what everything is. Look what everything looks like? All right,
So who's any good? Since I asked myself that every day,
(01:36:13):
you know, well, here's the thing, like I was, I
was listening you talked to coach Bennett and it's like
they're twenty eight and two, okay, Like winning is winning,
especially in the A c C. And while I'm not
enamored with Virginia, and they have a couple of wins
that should go. Boy, they are lucky as heck to
win that game. They're they're winning and uh. But but
(01:36:33):
my concern with them, Doug, is when you get into
the NBA tournament with with the way they play, they
have a hard time running away from teams with just
the lower amount of possessions. And when you let someone
hang around and hang around and hang around, you're kind
of asking for when things get a little tight, when
you're you know, six point game, five point game, eight
point game with under five to go, it's kind of
(01:36:54):
a that that momentum starts rolling. I still think like,
if you're asking me the one team that I I
trust the most, it's a Villanova, the team that I
think has the highest upside, Like if they maximize playing
as good as they can possibly play, yeah, it's Duke. Yeah,
they're their best is better than everybody else's best. I
would I would generally agree with you. I saw the
(01:37:15):
Big ten teams this weekend, and though I don't think
all the Michigan State pieces fit together, I'm not sure
they have enough guards, but their pieces are pretty good.
And their coach is pretty good, and they defend and
the rebound like and you know, Michigan a guy is
about as good a coach as there is, and and
they shoot a ton of threes and they have a
big guy who can defend the rim and shoot threes.
(01:37:36):
And I like it, and I almost I feel like,
here's what happens. It's a little bit like the narrative
in college athletics where yeah, everybody's cheating. You're like, no,
not really close to everybody's cheating, but there are some
teams that are breaking rules and some of their cheating
and they'll get if they get caught. They get caught.
The narrative is Big ten stinks, and yeah, the bottom
of the Big ten is bad, the top of the
(01:37:56):
Big ten is really good. Those top three teams at
the top are really good. Totally agree, Totally agree. But
the one thing I will say is that I do
subscribe to the school of thought that this layoff from
Michigan State concerns me. Like when when I was playing
at Craton and we were in the valley, I mean,
Arch madness just wrapped up, so I was used to
having we would have to sit around for a week,
(01:38:18):
and Doug, I felt like every time we went and
played in the n c A tournament, it took us
about ten So maybe that like under eight media time
out to kind of wake up. I mean, Michigan State
is now going to be off for twelve days. They're true.
I'm just I'm talking about to get things rolling for them.
I mean, you never know. I mean, listen, they lost
(01:38:40):
the Middle Tennessee each year ago, which but but in
there they didn't have any time off, right, they played
on Sunday when they turned around and hit the road again.
So it's like, look, you know you have you know
that one out that way obviously didn't work. Let's see
if this way works well and well. And the thing is,
I think Michigan Michigan is a team that would want
(01:39:01):
to keep on playing. I mean, they gotta take a
little bit of time off, but they're playing their best basketball.
And Doug, you know, as a player, like when you're
whooping and you're in a rhythm and you're in a
flow there there's a collective flow for that and you
want to keep on playing. So it just will be
interesting to see what the layoff now it's gonna be.
It's gonna be a classic Monday Morning quarterback Doug Right, Like,
it'll be like whatever happens in the first weekend, we'll
(01:39:22):
kind of be like, well, you have the other layoff
wasn't good for that team. It was great for that team.
But it's just it's, uh, Michigan is a team that
I feel like it's peaking at the right time. I
bet they wish they could keep on just whooping right now. Yeah,
I mean we all again, we all say who's peaking
at the right time. But the Michigan State thing is
pretty interesting, right where like, well they won for they
won the tournament in a great game, and then they
(01:39:42):
and then until they didn't. Now, Michigan last year went
to Sweet sixteen, but very easily could have lost Oaklhoda
State in the first game. So it's I'm not I'm
not sure if there's a correlation between the two. If
there was a team, so the team that you would
bet your salary to make it to San Antonio would
be Nova. Yes, I they just trust I think Brunson's
(01:40:03):
Brunson has the best command and gain control of any
point guard in the country, and they just rarely have
bad possessions. Now, they do get jump shot happy, and
they're really three point reliant. But I also think that
they got their little swoon coincided with having two starters
basically out, and when they're at full strength, they can defend.
They can win a grinder, you know, they can win
(01:40:23):
a game sixty eight, They can win a game. I
like teams that can kind of win both styles. But
they're the team that I trust the most right now. Alright,
so here here in lies the big question. Who of
the teams that no one outside of you, me and
all of us crazy people that love the sport even
when others do not, who's the one like that team
(01:40:45):
is gonna win a game. I would have said Middle
Tennessee because they've won, won the past two years, and
I still think they got a good shot. Of course,
then they go and they get swept by Marshall, so
they might or might not get in. Probably do. There's
Little of Chicago who just dominated loyal Illinois. Excuse me,
which is the little Chicago whatever who just dominated the
valley and took down Illinois State to win Arch Madness yesterday? Um,
(01:41:08):
I don't think you can go with St. Mary's, although
you can if you want but they've been a top
twenty five club. Who's the team who not enough people
are talking about. But if you see him in your bracket,
you might want to advance and pass one of these
big names schools who's not literally as good as they've been. Doug,
I don't think you're gonna let me get away with
this one, but I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna take it.
What about Rhode Island, They're they're they're not They've lost
(01:41:31):
a few in that sat. What happened in that St. Joseph,
I have no idea was a senior day and they
got beat by thirty points at home. I mean, that's scary.
And then they lose to they lose to Davison the
other day. But I mean we both know that that's
a program that is always you always got to have
your everything tightened up when you're playing them. But I
look at them. They were so they beat Great in
(01:41:53):
the first round the Nsate termat last year, and they
played Oregon as tough as anybody did all the way
up until Oregon lost to Carolina in the final. Shouldn't
be they should have been thought should have been Oregon,
and they play they play small ball. E. C. Matthews,
you know, Jared Torrell, like all those guys are grown men,
and they defend you. They're confident, the fact that they
(01:42:13):
tasted the tournament last year, they're well coached. I'm I
don't love that they they're going going through a little
something right now, but they're the team to me that
I wouldn't want to see in the first or second
round at all if I'm a big dog. But there,
I mean, who knows what seed they're gonna get. I
mean that they could be anywhere from a six to
a seven in that area. And I don't know if
you necessarily call that a Cinderella, but if you're not
(01:42:35):
looking at your Michigan, your Michigan State, U C l A.
Those types of teams, I mean, to me, the Rhode
Islands team I wouldn't want to see. Here's one of
the fascinating things. You and I both have covered the
Big East. Of course, you and I both played in
the Big twelve, and I think both teams, though we'd
all conclude it's harder to play in a true round
robin league, right double round robin league. We play everybody twice.
(01:42:56):
I think both of those Both of those leagues have
benefit did greatly from the double round robin league because
it gives them a better chance at more quality wins.
I mean, like, look, I don't think either league is great.
Um I do. I think Xavier is good. Yeah, I
think Nova is good. Yeah. But outside of that, the
rest of the league is just okay. You know, I
(01:43:18):
mean case in point what they've done out of conference.
But because it's a double round robin league and a
couple of teams have taken down the very top, you know,
the Marquettes of the world are probably gonna make the tournament.
The Seaton Halls, who've fallen on some hard times going
to make the tournament. The same thing in the Big Twelve,
with all these teams kind of stuck in the middle.
(01:43:39):
They weren't great against the SEC, they weren't great in
the nonconference, but the double round robin is really going
to help artificially inflate their numbers. Yeah, there's no question.
I mean, even you think about last year, the double
round robin helped and the fact that a lot of
teams got a crack at Xavier and Crayton after they
lost their point guards. And so while that Winds still
looks great without some nerves they've here was a different
(01:44:00):
team without Maurice Watson. Crating is a different team even
you look at this year, uh Cradon was a different
team after Martin Krompo went down, and so they've been
trying to recalibrate. Here they're kind of getting a roll
and they beat Nova a couple of weeks ago, which
which helped them. And you're not is Doug. I mean,
when you when you get to see a team one
time and then you get to adjust and see where
teams hurt you and where they didn't hurt you, and
(01:44:22):
and then get to see him again and oftentimes on
your home floor. I mean, Providence beats Xavier at Providence,
Now who's better? I mean, obviously Xavier's much better. Providence
beat Nova when they were at the at home as well.
I mean, Providence has wins over two potential one seeds
and I don't think I know you had Providence in Marquette.
Providence is good, but Providence isn't great. I mean, I
(01:44:42):
think Ed Cooley gets a lot out of them. They
get a lot of things manufactured by great sets in
the half court. I don't think they got great individual pieces.
I agree with you. The one thing, the one thing
I will say is that I do think the one
thing about the Big East that impresses me is basically
from Nova all the way to to Paul and St.
John on, each team can really score. I mean that
(01:45:03):
they all got they all got one or two guys
that can really light it up and in in a
in an era of college basketball where you can see
some grinders. I mean, just being able to score seventy
five a night is is didn't take you a long ways? Well,
I think it's also because they have older players, you know,
older players. Nick Bob joining us UM's College basketballs for
Fox Sports. He'll be on the pre and post coverage
(01:45:25):
of the Big East Tournament and MSG on Thursday. I
just got back from MSG. So it's great for the
Big Ten Tournament, Big East Tournament, It's fantastic. Gonna be
all over Fox and Fox Sports. One most important question
is this, You hosted an award winning radio show in Omaha.
Did they kill me the next day after I called
the Creighton game? No, they love they all the listen,
all the Creighton heads love the jacket. I mean just
(01:45:49):
love the jacket. You put on, and so no, everybody
was loving you do. I think everybody loves to to
get some national guys to come in and get us
to get a taste of what Creighton and well but
you know, you know what it's like though, when like
you haven't. That was my only creating game all year,
and it's like, oh what what? And I have no idea,
like look, we don't assigned the games like boss sitting
(01:46:10):
next to me, like, yo, you could do this thing
blindfolded and know these know these teams. I just didn't
know if guys were calling in going like hey bo,
why they have Gottleib doing it last year? Last night
he shocked. Listen, I will next time, I sew, I'll
show you my emails and we can type in Gottlieb
in the in the search and nothing came up. Heard
so and so no news is good news. You killed it.
(01:46:31):
That's all I gotta say. I love it. I hit upstream.
It was like seventy degrees in Omaha. It was. It
was amazing. Yeah, I did, I had I was. I
was the guy in the speedo um walking through the
market district where that's called anyway, I know, uh, I
know the Uh, the regional's coming to your town too,
so that'll be that'll be good. That'd be good time.
(01:46:51):
People are been debating the market, the Marriott versus the Hilton.
I still like the Hilton. I had another problem with
Hilton plus. You get if you don't have to go outside,
like if you can walk stay. You know, it's like
the Kentucky rupp Arena thing, right, You mean, if you
don't going outside when it's not seventy and Stunni's just it.
Don't do it. Any hotel is connected as good, no
question about it. Nick bah, who's the mayor of Omaha

(01:47:34):
You've been Omaha, Yes, yes, I have, um, but never stayed,
just either flew in or drove through. Had to cover
Nebraska football one year, so flew into Omaha when I
moved out to l A drove through Omaha on my
way out. Wait wait, wait, so you flew into Omaha
but then drove to Lincoln. Yes, so you didn't even
(01:47:55):
have a meal in Omaha. No, No, I did not. Hey,
I need a ruling on this one music again, Ramos,
has he actually been to Omaha if he's physically been
to Omaha but never stopped the car and had a
meal in Omaha. I've always said yes. I don't think
layovers and airports are because late layovers did not count
you correct, But I think that at least being through
(01:48:18):
the city, like I actually drove past the old Rosenblatt
Stadium when it was. The new one is amazing, and
it's right near the the the basketball r now, which
is beautiful. Ramos, I need a ruling there he has
been through I would say, yes, he has been to
omahaed brass music. I would say it counts as yeah,
(01:48:38):
I've physically passed through the city. I mean, look, and
he wasn't. Dan wasn't like inflating the story. Oh yeah,
I've been there. And then you're like and then I
one time pressed him on it, and he's like, well,
I drove through one time. I didn't stop forget that
I would say you've barely been there, like which you didn't.
(01:49:01):
You didn't inflate it, but I wouldn't. I wouldn't claim
that I've spent time in Oma. But it is a
double as well, because as I said, I flew in
and then drove, but then there was another time that
I drove through. So maybe I've even been in different
parts on separate occasions. But did you ever actually get
out of the car. No, I'm sorry, I'm gonna change
(01:49:21):
my ruling. All right, what else you got? Well? I
can say that I probably walked to the rental car counter.
I just can't remember where it was anyway. Moving on

and European Union anyway. Um, so, by the way, you're
you're crazy to say if I've driven through the city
that I haven't been there, like I physically was in
the city limits. Like airports, like you know, the Cincinnati
airport so much has made it's it's in northern Kentucky,
so you're not really in Cincinnati. But like I split
the city in half. I just didn't have to go
(01:51:56):
to the bathroom during that thirty minutes that I was
driving through. I think I've totally been to Omaha. Yeah, yeah,
you've been been to haven't been in Omaha? Pen through that? Yeah? Yeah,
that's that's fair. That's that's fair. Do you that I
(01:52:16):
never buy anybody who says I had tainted meat, and
an athlete who's training just happens to have tainted meat.
I'm sorry, I don't I don't buy it. Yes, music music.
So I did see this on Twitter. Someone had mentioned
because I was following someone who covers boxing, and if
you remember this article I'm looking at from ESPN is
(01:52:38):
from May of two thousand sixteen. The NFL actually did
send a memo out to players. Players are warned to
be aware of the issue when traveling to Mexico and China.
Please take caution if you decide to consume meat, and
understand that you do so at your own risk. So
it's not as if this is something that's never ever
been heard of. The NFL went out of their way
(01:52:59):
to warned players that it could potentially be an issue.
He's also changing his training sites, according to Golden Boy Promotions,
to the United States, as he had been training in Mexico. Yeah.
I don't know if I put that in there. And
he's from Mexico, I mean, right, so, right, So there
are elements to it that make it somewhat believable. I
am sort of with you and that, yes, but it's
(01:53:24):
not as if he's totally making up a story like, oh,
it had to come from cow meat and everyone's like
cow meat, what are you talking about? Well, if somebody
here tested positive for marijuana could be just in Denver,
you know, well, that's it. You know, there it was.
There's why the small trace was. I think they're backtracking.
I think that they found that convenient excuse. Yeah. I
tend to tend to agree, like, look, you're training for
(01:53:47):
a fight against Triple G, and you just happen to
get pop for it, right, just happened to happen to
get popped for it. Like, sorry, just don't don't do whatever.
I Triple credit Triple G. They're not canceling the fight.
They're still gonna fight. The thing is still on. You know.
It's interesting. There's been a lot of discussion about Josh
(01:54:08):
Rosen and his personality. I've told this analogy before. I
don't know if I've told it on this show. Have
I done the Manhattan Beach and Sank m anything on
this show, Ryan, Or did I do it when I
hosted the herd uh Ramos. You you're a native of
southern Californian, so you can probably attest to this. The
difference in Josh Rosen and Sam Donald is as simple
(01:54:30):
as the difference between San Clemente where Sam Donald's from,
and Manhattan Beach where Josh Rosen. Manhattan Beach is stunning beautiful. Um,
there's three parts to it. There's the there's the sand, right,
there's the tree the sand and what's the other one
there's and then there's the not the strip right whereas
(01:54:53):
there there's no no, no, there's there's three different parts
to it, Like it's all about proximity to the water.
The tree district, so the tree, I don't have a
tree district. There's like a tree line streets very very nice,
but those are less expensive homes. There's the sand district.
And then there's the I don't want to the strand,
(01:55:14):
and then there's the strand and the strand is you
open up your door, right, that's where the big ballers live.
But in Manhattan Beach, that's a place you moved to.
That that's a place where you've got people. Cowherd lives there.
Um you have chance. I know a guy who runs
(01:55:36):
Oprah's TV network. He also owns the surf shop there. Right, Like,
you got dudes there, but they're all from somewhere else
and they all moved there. That's a place you moved
to where Saint clement A, which is also a beach town.
Also as different areas, but it's like the last outpost
in Orange County before you get to Santao Freya now
(01:55:58):
shut down nuclear power plant, and then you get to
kind of nothingness and then Camp pendled It And I
get is that is a place that people are from
and both are great towns. Both to place you can
send your kids to public schools. By the way, Josh
Rosen went to private school. His parents are are both
(01:56:18):
Ivy League educated, and I kind of think that the
way he's a former tennis player, so a lot of
who he is kind of fits Manhattan Beach private school.
Tennis players. Tennis players you have to have an immense
amount of mental toughness. You've gotta be able to go
out of a loan because you're out there on a
court on an island. You start hitting the ball all
(01:56:40):
over hell or the you know the line judge calls,
he calls a football. You can't melt down. There's nobody
else you can depend on to pick you up other
than you. So I have a great amount of respect
for tennis players. But tennis players are different. Now they're
just different birds. They a lot of times struggle because
they haven't been in a team sport. But the difference
(01:57:00):
in Donald and Rosen is just as much as the
difference in Manhattan Beach a place you moved to, and
Saint Clement at place you're from. Is that a fair
assessment of the two. Okay, so there are a lot
of people think, well, Josh Rosen, people don't like him.
There are people that don't like him. But I've actually
talked to NFL people who said, look forget about whether
(01:57:22):
you like him or don't like him. You know, he's
had a couple of arm issues, there's a durability issue,
and that he hasn't played a whole season healthy and
we're only talking about three college seasons. And then you
factor in some of the challenges with his personality and leadership.
But more than anything, he might have a red flag
from some of these top quarterback drafting teams because of
(01:57:44):
his lack or potential lack of durability. Gonna be interesting.

interesting coaches, our interesting players. All right, will work on it.
Let's get to the press the press. The Auto Zone

you rev up your tax refund your refund this tax
season in the zone Auto Zone. My quality reading continues
to just be amazing today. Well, what do you got for?
Is dan byre? Well, what's start out? With the National
(02:00:01):
Football League? We are less than twenty four hours away
for the deadline for teams to place the franchise tag
on players. The Cowboys did sell with defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence.
Today Steelers expected to do so with Levy on Bell
as even Bell told ESPN. Either they think that his
price is too high or they think that their value
is right on for what he it's negotiations can still
(02:00:24):
take still take place. It just doesn't allow you to
hit the open market, and it becomes that becomes a
leverage for the team. Really now, the only thing it
works against the team is it is a high salary
cap number. It is dollar for dollar and the sellar candem.
The Oakland Raiders have released linebacker Aldon Smith. He was
arrested on domestic violence charges over the weekend. As fiance
(02:00:45):
told TMZ that Smith checked himself into a rehab facility
with the help of her family on Sunday for substance abuse. Now,
former Raiders that coach Jack del Real tweeted out, quote
never liked league rules that eliminate the ability of teams
to offer Alden and others in a situation the structure
they so desperately need. End quote. I I understand Jack
(02:01:05):
del Rio saying he needs structure. He doesn't he needs.
This is a time which he needs support. But this
is not his first strike, al right. This is he's
been in rehab before, he's had issues with domestic stuff before,
and that doesn't mean the teams can't resign him. Um So,
I I completely on it. This is the don't throw
(02:01:26):
the baby out with the bathwater you have. You can't
hold a guy accountable and you can't help him get
help if you truly care about a human being, if
you just cut him loose. But I'm I'm guessing the
Raiders had a zero talents policy with him. Plus the
league wants nothing to do with anything domestic violence. And
then there were two CBS sports insider and friend of
(02:01:47):
the show. Jason Lockinfora tweeted out today that it looks
like it's going to be down to the Vikings and
Jets for Kirk Cousins when the quarterback hits free agency.
Broncos are out. Broncos and Cardinals aren't out, according to
lock and Forth. Of course, when when we heard the
Jets might do sixty million up front, that's coming, I'm sure,
I'm sure from Kirk Cousins camp, because Kirk Cousin wants
(02:02:10):
to wants to drive the number up. He really wants
to play for the Vikings, but not at a substantial
discount to what he can make with the Jets. I
also argued on my Sunday show that the Broncos would
be actually be the last of the four with the
Cardinals and Broncos just because of the offensive line and
Doug You don't know about their head coaching situation. It's
actually the least stable of the four. With Todd Bowles
(02:02:31):
gonna get contract extension. Their defense isn't as good as
your memory of their defense that was several years ago.
Their defense was the best in the league. Yeah, the
Seahawks attendant Jimmy Graham expected the part ways with Graham
becoming a free agent not much of a surprise, but
Seahawks not placed in the franchise tag on Graham. Was
that a good trade for him? It feels like it wasn't. Yeah.
(02:02:51):
The first rounder and Max Unger sure helped the Saints
in their offensive line to get that running game going.
Felt like it felt like a great trade for the Saints. Um,
I mean the Saints rebuilt themselves trading away some pieces
both the past couple of years. I kind of feel
like Seattle lost that trade. The Associated Press reports the
Florida House of Representatives have passed the bill by a
(02:03:13):
vote of one to zero that will allow for a
UCF National Championship license plates. So yes, you can know
you can now while you're close to doing it. In Florida,
you could get a UCF Nights National Championship license plate. Well,
seeing some of the stories that come out of Florida,
plenty of that means they'll be made in a jail
(02:03:34):
cell some somewhere, uh somewhere with some of these crimes
are committed. Hey, do do you guys in jail still
make the still make the license plates? I don't think
so makes license plates. Somebody's gotta make license plates. I'm
not sure. Maybe maybe they're doing oh maha. And I
just didn't see the factory because I ain't get out,
(02:03:57):
like brandon ingram out a week for the Lakers has
a growing range bage out there and pressed that was
the press. California has those black license plate those red
show ones is a really cool, really cool. I used
to have a vanity plate. No, it didn't say fresh.
(02:04:20):
It was actually my brother's vanity plate that I took
over as I am trouble. Trouble, trouble, right, yeah, my
sister had very trouble. This is the Doug Gotlip Show,
Fox Sports Radio. I just admitted that it's terrible
