Speaker 1 (00:02):
Men, this is the Herd. Colin Cowherd is off today.
The lovely and talented Christine Leaghy joins me, and she
always joins Colin Here on Fox Sports one, the I
Heart Radio app or wherever however you may be listening
to the show. Thanks for making us part of your day.
Live from sunny Los Angeles, home of the Conference of Champions.
(00:28):
That doesn't even sound right right with the Pack twelve
eliminated from the n c A Tournament, Arizona annihilated last night.
From Buffalo to Tonka, the Bulls end up taking down
the Mighty Wildcats and blowing up everybody's bracket. Welcome in. Uh,
we will talk a little bit of college hoops for you.
I have up. I'm gonna do my own blazing five
(00:49):
Christine at the end of this show only. We're gonna
do a college basketball blazing five. Since I know that
many of you. Hello to everybody at the sports books.
Uh in Las Vegas, US that you're waking up. Man.
I either lost or one big yesterday. Uh. There was
some big over and unders that were hit. There's some
interesting lines that went down. I'll try and make you
(01:11):
some money after this show and into tomorrow into the
second round, which starts tomorrow. Sounds good, All right, did
you watch the games? You care about the game, of course,
I care about the games. A bracket. I'm gonna be
honest about this. This is the first year and I
think ten years I didn't make a bracket. I don't
know what it was about this year. It's it's it's
a crazy thing. We'll talk about the bracket and what
(01:33):
it relates to in life, but I will be honest
with you. I had Arizona in the championship game, yes,
and I was advised not to do so. I had,
and I advised myself not to do so, but I
just kind of convinced myself, if this happens here and
that happens there and Virginia has an injury, they're in finally,
and I thought there was something to the US against
(01:54):
the world, you know, between uh, the FBI probe and
ten show n c A probe and the wire taps.
And Arizona just won the Pack twelve tournament and they
have number one, number two pick. I think Deandrean's gotta
gonna gonna go number two, but whatever, they have one
of the top two picks in the draft. You have
a team of of guys that they've been to the
(02:15):
n c A tournament, came up short last year in
the Sweet sixteen. I just somehow I envisioned that happening,
and man, was I wrong. We'll get to why I
was so wrong a little bit later on in the show.
What I wanted to start with was this story. Look,
there is a bit of an exodus, um. And I'm
not talking an exodus in terms of Exodus and Deuteromany
(02:36):
and and the books of the Bible. There is a
bit of an exodus from from New England, as when
Nate Solder is now a member of the New York Giants.
We've seen other we've seen other Patriots leave New England
as well. But I saw this story and I thought
it was fascinating and I I kind of get it.
(02:57):
You know, in order to succeed in business, and especially
in the business of sports, there's one thing that you
have to have, Like, Look, I'm okay with disagreement. I'm
okay with people challenging. I think anybody who leads, whether
it's their radio show or TV show, UM, or you're
(03:19):
leading a company or you're leading a team, you're okay
with disagreement with a dissenting opinion. On the other hand,
when that dissenting opinion becomes one that is shared by
too many, by share by more than one by the
dissent or, they become somebody who's pulling in a different direction.
(03:43):
I've I've heard coaches talk about this in football. Uh,
Texas and m signed Jimbo Fisher right to a ten year,
seventy five million dollar deal, And one of the things
he said when he took over the job was that, Uh.
He alluded to the administration at Florida State not pulling
in the same direction. He's like, Hey, the thing about Tech,
(04:04):
say and m is everyone's pulling in the same direction.
And one of the reasons that Bill Belichick has been
able to be so successful to the tune of eight
Super Bowls, he's the most successful and esteemed pro coach
in the history of modern American sports, is because he
(04:27):
gets guys to take less money. It's because he's not
afraid to jettison players that are past their prime and
that are coming up on a contract year. This from
Mike Girardi, who is of course a Boston reporter, someone
who knows is watching our show. Tonight's source says Bill
Bill Bill Belichick is making UH players miserable, and yes,
(04:53):
a lot of this ties back to Alex Guerrero. Think
about this quote from UH Jimbo Fisher. You can have
Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry, Chuck Nol, you could have the
greatest coaches in the world, But if your ministration doesn't
see things the way that you see things and allow
you to do things that way, nothing could be achieved.
That's Jimbo Fisher, of course, won a national championship as
(05:15):
an offensive coordinate at LSU. And one one is a
head coach at Florida State. He's now the new head
coach at Texas A and m remember Guerrero. Alic Guerrero
is Brady's trainer. There's been a storyline for the Patriots
over the last several months. Reports have said that there's
a discord between Belichick and the Pats and that some
of the players choose Guerrero over the team. Players like Brady,
(05:40):
players like Gronk prefer to train, workout, seek treatment from Guerrero,
while the team would rather see their players do things
with the team. Al Right, This report says that paths
players like Gronk and Brady are miserable that that they
don't feel that Bill Belichick appreciate the sacrifice they put
(06:01):
in in order to put their bodies on the line.
And when I read this, when I read this, I
know why Bill Belichick is attempting to and has essentially
cut as many times as he can with Alex Guerrero. Look,
he's got to keep Guerrero at arms distance. He absolutely does,
because he's still a trainer for Tom Brady and Brady
(06:22):
is his quarterback. But if you want to know why
pulled his sideline pass, if you want to know why
he he changed the routine and and and eliminated the
on field office and giving him carte blanche, this is
the reason why. It's not that Guerrero's medical techniques aren't
ahead of the curve. It's not that what he's saying
(06:44):
in terms of taking care of the body, and maybe
Bill Belichick not appreciating players bodies inaccurate. Okay, anybody who's
a physical therapist, especially a guy who's essentially an advocate
for players, is going to react as such. But the
reason Bill Belichick had cut ties is because this guy
is driving a wedge between the players and the coach.
(07:07):
It's simply, it's that simple. He is not pulling in
the same direction. And look, he is allowed to act
as he wants to act, to treat his players as
he wants to treat them, to tell them whatever he
wants to tell them. But if he wants to be
associated with the Patriots, you have to be pulling in
the same direction, and he's clearly not. And while Tom
(07:28):
Brady can be slightly influenced mentally, Rob Gronkowski and others
can be influenced far more easily because they're a little
bit more simple minded. They don't understand the complexities of
the relationship. It's a lot like the Jedo Jedi mind trick.
Doesn't work on everybody, okay, And while this doesn't work
on everybody, but if it works on one player, and
it's one player questioning Belichick and Belichick's methods, that's too
(07:52):
many because the Patriots, by their own estimation, are already
going to be at a talent disadvantage because they're choosing
character over talent. Belichick, if you've read anything about who
he wants to surround himself, I want guys that want
to be coached. I don't care about having the greatest
players on earth. They look and laugh at the Pittsburgh
(08:15):
Steelers with Antonio Brown and and and you know, doing
the Facebook thing in the locker room, and having a
super talented running back, a position to which they seem
to be able to find anyone they want off the
street to fill, and instead the Steelers are franchise tagging
their running back because they can't agree to a long
term deal. They laugh at that. That's not the Patriot way.
(08:35):
A matter of fact, it wasn't the Steeler way for
a long time. And the Steelers are kind of caught
between who they want to be and who they actually are.
But when I read this about Alex Guerrero, and for
a long time people have asked this question, like how
could you run a guy off who had such a
great relationship with Tom Brady, who was so close to
so many of the players. This is why, sure players
(08:58):
are miserable. Everybody's miserable, bowl Like, that's the sport. Most
people are miserable in their job. Most most most workers,
who are compensated far less than that of pro football players,
are miserable with the day to day grind of every
day checking in and doing the same thing. The difference
here is you can either act as an advocate for
(09:21):
the team and pulling in the right direction and stitch
him up and stretch him up and kick him back
out there in the football field and say, hey, we're
gonna do better. Don't worry about coach b He's in
it for the right reasons. Or you can be the
guy that says, I know you're miserable. The old man's
lost it. He doesn't know what he's talking about. He
doesn't appreciate you. Look this, we have this in our
(09:44):
lives with our spouses. Okay, if your spouse, if if
you have a really good job and you come home,
anybody can bitch and moan to their wife or to
their husband. Anybody can, right, But if their wife is
telling like go in and tell that guy to go
blank himself, right, that's gonna get you fired. She's not helping.
(10:07):
You can say he might not appreciate you, but it's
a really good job, it's a really good company, it's
gonna get better. That's the kind of person you need
supporting you. And Alex Guerrero is not supporting the team.
And so if you want to know, it's it's it's
not surprising to me at all that players are miserable.
It's not surprised to me at all that they think
their coach doesn't get them. That happens in every sport.
(10:27):
Havings in baseball, as in basketball, havings in football not surprising.
But if you want to know why Alex Guerrero got
run off from the Patriots, this is why. Because you
can pull in the same direction or an opposite direction,
and every football coach will tell you the second you
have somebody pulling the opposite of direction, the entire stage
(10:47):
coach gets slowed down. There's this famous speech mcbrown gifts
mc brown of course, longtime coach at Texas want to
North Carolina want a Texas won a national championship in
one of the great champion games we've ever seen, played
down the street at the Rose Bowl. But mac Brown like,
look when he was managing Texas, it's really more of
(11:09):
a manager than a coach. You got Texas high school
football coaches that he always gives thanks to Rite. You
have all the parents that they love, all the parents
of the Texas players, near lums of the University of Texas,
and you have the former players like you have all
these different factions that have to feel like they are
loved by Mac Brown and by the football program as
(11:31):
well as all the talented players we have here at
the University of Texas. Is that a Texas accent? No,
that's a Mac Brown imitation. That's Mack Brown. Um. But
Mac would, if you've ever seen him speak to other coaches,
he'll go around the room and he'd start his speech
by saying, coach, how is your season, Coach, how is
your season? And one coach would say, coach, we had
(11:51):
a great year one our league. Another coach say, coach,
we had a terrible year and we had injuries, probably
didn't run the right offense. You know, parents were upset
talking to high school coaches, and every coach who said
something negative about their program, he'd go around and say,
you're fired, you're fired, you're fired, You're effing fired. And
they'd say, you want to know what he said, and
(12:12):
you want to know why, Because when you're running a program,
the second you have anyone saying something inside your program
saying something to somebody outside the program negative about it,
you know that people aren't all pulling in the same
direction and you're allowing the thought of negativity that there's
not a happy ending in sight. Look, this is not
(12:37):
just a football thing. This is a business thing, this
is a basketball thing, this is a baseball thing, this
is a life thing. Like Alex Guerrero got run out
of New England and he's still obviously gonna work with
Tom Brady and some of the players, and he's being
champion as his hero doing things the other way. And
I think his medical techniques are ahead of the curve.
(12:57):
I I don't believe in Olympic lifting and squats and
let's do cross fit every day. Like, Look, that's tough
on your joints. And there is a different way to
train different athletes differently, no question. But if the reaction
to coaching and to their pushing and their prodding and
their efforts when they've been as successful in New England
(13:19):
as they have been is players are miserable. Coach doesn't
understand them. You're driving a wedge. That's how you get
yourself run out of the building. All right. There's a
ton of speculation about where Lebron James will play next year.
I know that um that Colin has his Lebron Lebronzo.
Lebronzo believes the Lebron's coming to l A. I disagree. Okay,
(13:42):
well we can get into why you disagree and where
he might be going. But there is one potential destination
that I have heard people bring up. I've heard I
heard people bring him up. And the second I hear
people bring them up, bright interesting people, people that I respect,
some people that I admire. When I hear them say
(14:02):
this destination, I turned my hearing eight off. I can't
listen to him. I'll tell you where and why. Up
coming next in the herb what I'll welcome in. It's
the herd. I'm Doug Golliban for Colin. We'll here from
Christine Lahy with the News. In a moment last night,
(14:24):
Twitter was sent into a frenzy because lebron James had
a filthy, filthy dunk on the nurkics of Portland. Should
be pointed out, should be pointed out that the Cavaliers
lost that game one one oh five. As uh boy.
The Portland Trailblazers have been spectacular in the second Since
the All Star break, they have been ridiculous. Damian Lillard
(14:44):
had twenty four and they got twenty nine from c J. McCullum,
seventeen from Mo Heartless and the Cavaliers fall despite Lebron
having and six, he got into a little verbal dust
up with his head coach Tyler. Is that a dust
stop look like more than a dusk step to me? Yeah?
I mean, look, um, you get you get guys. You look,
(15:10):
you get guys who are around each other all the time.
There's expression in baseball when the baseball seats didn't come
into an end. You talk to baseball players and they're like, man,
I can't wait to pick my own friends again, And like,
what's that mean? I think it's been extended out to
like twenty days, but in before they extended the All
Star break baseball hundred six two games used to have
(15:31):
sixteen days off the entire season. And so look, you're
around those guys every day. And I don't know. I mean,
I think from watching enough TV shows about women when
they hang out with other women too long, how they
argue with each other. But dudes, when they hang out
with other dudes are going to argue. Right. I have
gotten into a verbal fight and probably a fist fight
(15:53):
with just about every one of my friends growing up
that that's what happens, like you're just around each other
too much? Yeah are you? You know? And and a look,
part of that is coaching, and part of that coaching
star and that's part of having a younger coach who
some of you as more of a contemporary than having
an older coach who tells you what to do. But
(16:13):
I do think and here's kind of the point I
think you're kind of making that you're you'll you'll agree
with me when I get there. Okay, Um, that's Christine Lady.
I'm Doug gottlieb In for Colin. This is the herd.
I hear people say, you know where he should go?
You know where Lebron should go? San Antonio. Now, the
(16:34):
part that that people don't, the reason people don't want
to take San Antonio seriously is it's not a major market.
He does own a home in San Antonio. It's off
the beaten path, to which twenty one century folks, you're
like Russell Westbrook, pretty big. He's in Oklahoma City. You know,
the San Antonio guys could be bigger. They're just personalities
(16:55):
weren't bigger. It has nothing to do with San location
is now he's in Cleveland now and he is a
knowing a billionaire, but he's in every market in the country.
He's on TV commercials. Market size doesn't matter because the
league is on TV. You have social media that goes everywhere.
This is a global sport. He's actually kind of a
global icon. Doesn't matter where he goes. That's fine, but
(17:19):
he's not going to play for Greg pop Fitch. The
second you say Lebron James could go to San Antonio
if I had a hearing egg and hearing it and
to this point fifteen years of national radio, I'm like
the only guy to not have hearing issues. I'm sure
that day is coming. I was talking to Colin last
night and I was shouting as if he was in
(17:40):
the artillery, artillery in the navy. Okay, like, God, where
are you? I got you know you can't. But I
don't have hearing issues. But if I did, I would
click my hearing aid off. The second you say san Antonio,
do you know why? Do you know what the mantra
of the coaching staff, specifically of Greg Apovitch is in
(18:00):
San Antonio? Wait for it. Get over yourself, Get over yourself,
Get over yourself. I love this quote. From pop one time.
He said, I asked them if it wasn't too much trouble,
if it was if I wasn't being too pushy, if
they could execute what we were trying to do, and
if it doesn't make them too angry, if they also
(18:22):
wanted to play some defense on the other end, that
would be great. Right. He is a get over yourself
sort of guy, and Lebron James is a lot of things.
He's a much better shooter than he has been previously
in his career. He can play virtually any position. He
can guard, maybe not perfectly, but he has a jack
of all trades guarding most every position. His tremendous pastor
(18:43):
is a good rebounder, score a little bit the post,
score a little bit outside, do a little bit of everything.
But you know what, he has not and has never
been and never will be. He ain't over himself when
you're the King. You don't get over yourself when you
conduct daily press conferences and give the update UH on
your team and say, you know, I haven't played with
an All Star in a while. Right. He just he's
(19:07):
the The ability to be passive aggressive is helped by
the fact that you can do it when you're not
over yourself, when you understand that your words carry weight.
I'm not saying Lebron James won't leave. I'm not saying
that he won't go to Houston. It's a possibility, I'll
(19:27):
bite for a second. Sure they'd have to shed themselves
of all the ancillary parts that make Houston Houston, but
at least go Okay, I offer up that that the
seventies sixers are a possibility. Do I think ultimately he'd
be miserable in Philadelphia? Yeah, I think end of your
career you'd be miserable in Philadelphia. But they are surrounded
with young stars, and he likes playing with young guys
(19:49):
because they make him feel like the star that he
knows that he is. The same thing would happen in
in l A. Right. People don't just like being self aggrandizing.
They lie others to bow and tell them how great there.
That's why they have that Gucci row or the Jack
Nicholson seats. And even I don't know if you saw
the the NBA game when they played the Calves, Jack
(20:11):
was coming in and I think it was Jeff Van
Gundy said like, wait, Jack has to show his ticket. Yeah,
because that's actually the attitude that people like Jack and
others have in l A. That's the attitude that that
Lebron has, like I don't have to show my ticket,
Like actually, yes you do. Do you have a ticket?
Because people in l A are a lot of things
over themselves. They are not San Antonio over themselves. So
(20:35):
the second I hear the second that I hear, hey man,
he'd go to San Antonio. He can't take coaching from
Tyron Lieu saying that wasn't a good shot. Have you
ever thought of how Greg pop Fitch might relay what
he thinks of shots section. Forget about the fact that
(20:56):
his boys can't hang around, that they can't find the
team playing, they can't sent for a row unless they
buy the tickets, that all the stuff that he has
set up in Cleveland he can't carry with him to
San Antonio. Forget about all that stuff. Lebron James is not,
has not been, will not be over himself. That ain't
how he rolls. So the second you say, hey man,
he go to San Antonio, I stopped listening to you.
(21:18):
I stopped listening to you. It's like when somebody's talking
about health and fitness, and wellness, and they're like, you
know what I mean? And then you turn around, you
look and they lit up a cigarette. You're like, what
excuse me? Or when somebody says he God told me
the other day, like, listen, I believe in God. I
have been bar mitzfeed and my way Southern Baptist is
(21:41):
not an attack on religion anyway. But when you say
that God told you directly to do something, I got
a tough time with it. I'm not gonna lie to you.
And when you say that that he's gonna go play
for Greg Popovitch, Well he's never been coached by a
great coach, so he he wants to be coached by
a great coach. No he doesn't, No, no, he doesn't.
(22:04):
If you think a train will stop if it sees
your car on the tracks, you're right. It will about
a mile after it hits you. So don't try and
beat it because statistics show you might just lose stop
trains can't. Let's get to Christine with the news. No, no, turn,
this is the herd Line news. You missed something really
(22:25):
important when you slightly mentioned Lebron's dunk on use of Nurkic.
Did you see what he said afterwards. I did actually
after that dunk, Yeah, it was very pleased with himself.
And I know you pointed out that the Cabs didn't
lose one O five to the Trailblazers. Keep it. Lebron
still found some time to talk about how amazing he is. Oh, now,
(22:54):
I know, I knew it was gonna be a good one.
You know, it was gonna be shown for a long time,
and I was more excited look over to Matak Saturday
were um, you know, so so that you know it'll
go that one will last forever, you know, and my
highlights from from my career and even when I'm done yet,
in case you didn't hear that, he ended with that
(23:14):
one will last forever in my highlights for my career
and even when I'm done, I'm going to give you
that that was a great dunk. It was nasty, It
was it was it was filthy. I mean, poor poor Nurkich.
He has a family too, right, he has a family
to Lebron. Yeah, I feel bad for him. Um, it
was a great dunk that was on him. But I'm
not even in the least bit surprised that Lebron took
(23:36):
the opportunity to share about how great that was. Is
he is he anywhere close to over himself, because not
even a little bit, nor I think he ever will be.
So I take it you agree with the general premise
of my argument. Yeah, he's not going to the Sun's,
although I said noting the Suns either, by the way,
but definitely not going to the Sun's. Definitely going to
the Spurs. And I told you earlier I would love
(23:58):
if he went to the Spurs because I would love
to see Pop put him in his place a little bit,
you know. Could you imagine if Lebron tried to argue
with ye, I don't think that would go over quite well, No,
it would not. Um here's a place that would like Lebron,
although I think all places too. But you've seen this
billboard thing, different cities putting up billboards like Philly did it,
(24:20):
l A did it. Now Blazers fans are trying to
get a billboard up for them as well. They've started
to go fund me. So this isn't a real billboard, no,
but it's going to be soon. So they're starting to
go fund me. And this is Lebron. Dame needs a
third option. It's pretty good. That's that's actually amazing. It
might not have the effect that they intend in b
(24:41):
d X, but it's pretty amazing. So they need two
thousand dollars. And when we last checked it was at two.
So I'm sure that by the end of the day
they will get they need two thousand dollars. Yes, that's easy.
They'll get that, I think by the end of the day,
and then we'll see this billboard. I love that Dame
needs a third option. That's amazing. It's good. And finally
U c l A lost in the first four and
(25:04):
now there are banners flying over u c l A
saying final four's not first four's hashtag fire Alford, So
fans are calling for Steve Alford to be fired after
five seasons with the Bruins. And remember last season and
the football UH season after or before the A s
U game, there were banners that were flying over that
(25:25):
called for Jim Mora to be fired and then eight
days later he was yes. So well, look, I I
it's my personal belief that LaVar Ball and Alonzo Ball
are the gift that keeps giving. And stick with me
on this first second. Okay, So Alonzo last year helped
them get to a Sweet sixteen, his third Sweet sixteen
since becoming the head coach at U c l A.
And Alonzo really saved his job before the summer. Before
(25:50):
Alonso came onto campus, Steve Alford actually had to give
back a year of his contract. There was a year
extension that was added on. They had knocked off his
contract in an effort to save his job. A look,
I'm gonna prove it to you based upon this year, okay,
And they performed well, and I think he got that
extension put back on. Okay. And then this year because
lie Angelo Ball and the two others got caught shoplifting
(26:13):
in China, he kind of gets a pass. So you
don't think he'll be fired. I do not. I do not, um,
I honestly don't. Look, it's a disastrous to three days
for the pack, twelve for Larry Scott last year, four
teams in the Sweet sixteen, and one in the final four.
And now you've got U. C l A losing to St. Bonaventure,
who most of us couldn't pick out only in New
(26:33):
York on a map, even if you were given even
if you're giving a circle, pick somewhere inside this circle.
But I honestly think the excuse of losing three players
and having a really young team, he is a viable
one and he probably keeps his job one more year. Interesting,
I don't know the fact that there's banners flying above.
I don't like that. The whole idea of banners works
(26:55):
when there's an outdoor football practice. That doesn't work nearly
as well where there's inside. But do you see the
They're like, no, I saw the top we are talking about.
That's Christine with the news. Well, that's the news and Thansdline.
When shopping for car insurance, consider this. Geico has been
saving people money in car insurance for over seventy five years.
So if you're serious about saving its simple, go to
(27:16):
Geico dot com. After seventy five years, they know how
to save you money. All right, let's talk some hoop uh.
We need to talk a little bit about the NBA
prospects we saw playing college basketball yesterday, but we also
have to talk about this dust up between tylu and
Lebron James. Let's bring him in. Chris Bruss Are you
hear him weekends on Fox Sports Radio? You see him
(27:37):
on all of the shows here on Fox Sports one.
I've heard Lebrons say, hey, man, I haven't played in
an All Star in a while. He's speaking in glowing
terms now about Kevin Love. Like Kevin what Love was
the odd man out? Now he's the savior. How do
we how do we go from? Man, what's Kevin doing here? Too?
(27:57):
When's Kevin get here? Well? What app since? Makes the
heart grow fonder? You know? Look, I think Kevin Love
is gonna help him a great deal when he gets back.
I think you and I may disagree on this, but
I think him being the definitive second option matters. When
he was with Kyrie and Lebron is the third option,
he was inconsistent, sometimes really good, sometimes really bad, sometimes
(28:19):
disappears whatever. When he was the definitive second option and
Kyrie was gone, he played I think the best ball
of his career. Twenty points, ten rebounds, fifty shooting from three.
He's never been an efficient score. He was efficient. I
T four. Isaiah Thomas comes back, thinks he's the option one. A.
(28:40):
Love gets pushed down the three again and the inconsistency return.
So also at Centaer because I assume I think they
should start love at Centator Nance at for Lebron at three.
I think he's more effective as a center, uh, particularly
against Golden State. If you look at the numbers, twenty
four points, twelve rebound was a game when he's playing
(29:01):
center against Golden States. So I think Love will be
a big help. Look not big enough to cure all
of their problems, because obviously some defensive problems come with
Kevin Love out there. But I do think he'll be
a help and improve the team. Okay, But but like
if we want to go kind of lineup wise, it
doesn't it doesn't really If Nance is the is the
(29:22):
four and he's the five, you still Nance is the
non shooter. You guard him with the big and you
guard him as he's a shooter. But but you again,
you have to take somebody out of the lineup. And
there have been people that think, hey, you gotta have
you gotta have Rodney Hood when Rodney Hood is fully healthy, Okay,
and so who's and then that's not that's not exactly
a great shooting lineups as good as what else do
(29:45):
you put out there? Who if you start Jr. I
mean Corver, but I think defensively with Corver and Love
out there and that's the big thing. Though they're not
nearly as good defensively, they will get better offensively. They
would get worse defensively when you have Kevin Love there.
They it would be a challenge. I don't know about worse,
because it's hard to get worse than they are right now,
but he brings some defensive challenges. Um I pointed out
(30:09):
that Lebron to the Spurs makes no sense to me.
Just the idea of hey, get over you, get over yourself, right,
That's that's pops big thing, in addition to the fact
his guys can't come with him everywhere. The setup he
has in Cleveland he's not gonna have in San Antonio.
It's one of those things that it might yeah, right,
it might sound good and dinner conversation to say to
(30:30):
everybody's like, hey man, you never played for Hall of
Fame coach. How it work out. The reality of it
is it will never be a reality. I agree that
it won't happen. I don't think Lebron would go to
San Antonio as a city, but I I believe it
would be a great move for him. I think the
one team I look at, including Houston and say if
(30:51):
Lebron James went there this summer. That I would put
on the same level as a healthy Golden State would
be San Antonio. Assuming everything was worked out with Kauai,
he signed long term, everything smoothed over with the organization.
He's healthy. But I think I agree you were saying,
you know, Lebron can be tough to coach, there's no question,
(31:12):
and I agree he won't go there. But I think
if it were just about winning in a challenging situation
as opposed to just going to Golden State where you're
gonna win no matter what, I think san Antonio would
be the place to go. I think Pop would be
great for him. Uh. And I also think I think
Pop would have the credibility to challenge Lebron, and I
(31:35):
think Lebron he could get Lebron to listen. Perhaps if
anybody can, it would be Pop. I also went against him, like,
if Lebron goes against Tyler, Eric Spoelstra, even uh, Mike Brown,
David Black, most people are gonna side with Lebron if
he goes against Gregg Popovich. A lot of people say
(31:57):
Pop's got more rings. It was good enough for him, Duncan,
it was good enough for David Robin. You know, what
you're saying makes complete sense. I'm just saying the reality
of it is. Yeah, I would take a sacrifice of
ego the likes of which we haven't seen from Lebron well,
especially to see it in your sixteenth year, you know.
But again, if if it's just about I want to
(32:18):
win more championships and see if I can catch Michael
Jordan's and this mythical greatest player ever race, then I
think San Antonio would be the place to go. Look
the one thing magic four rings with pat Riley, Shack
Kobe Uh Jordan's never won it without the legendary coach.
(32:40):
I think if Lebron had played for one of those
three coaches Pop Riley, Phil Jackson for say half his career,
I think he'd have more rings. Um anything to the
Lebron James Tyler dust up yesterday, I don't think so.
I like the fact that Tyler was challenging him. Hey,
you took a bad shot, you know, probably help him
with the other players to see that. It didn't look
(33:02):
that bad to me as far as you know, you know,
I mean, coaches and players get into a lot. I
thought Lebron's exchanged with the assistant Phil Handy a few
months ago. I think it was in Toronto. Looked a
little worse, little more intense. After the game, Lebron seemed
in a good mood. I don't and look which Yeah,
I think he's doing it. He's purposely trying to stay
(33:27):
uplifted because it was a bad look in January. And
in January you knew there was probably a method to
the madness of Hey, I'm doing this to make them
change our team at the deadline. Now this is your team.
This is who you're going to bat within the playoffs.
So what's the point of salking? You have to try
to stay upbeat? Al Right, I want to get to
(33:49):
Trey Young up coming next? Okay, is he the next
Stef Curry or is he the next Jimmer for day
Chris Bruce Sarge is gonna keep joining us um obviously,
so will Christine Lahy. I'm Doug gotlic that's coming up next.
In the Herd. Car shopping and can make confusing with
terms like dealer price, Liz price, and invoice price. True
(34:12):
car shows you what other people paid for the car
you want. You can recognize a good price wrening ready
by a new or used car as a troop card,
enjoy more confident car buying experience. Doug Golligan for Colin,
This is the Herd. Fox Sports Radio, Fox Sports One. Uh,
Chris Brossard continues to join us. Chris, last night we
saw DeAndre Aton go out with Arizona kind of embarrassing fashion.
(34:32):
To no one's surprise. He said he's going to the
NBA Draft to be number one or number two overall.
Marvin Bagley of Duke They One yesterday expected to also
declare for the NBA Draft. I think maybe more interesting
is Trey Young. Of course, Oklahoma they lost the first
game of the day in overtime to Rhode Island. Now
Trey Young as a freshman led the country in scoring
and assists. And heck, the people at the place we
(34:56):
used to work at they had Trey Young, watch right.
I mean, it got completely out of control in terms
of how big a star they build him to be.
And you and I understand, you're trying to attract attention
to a sport which needs some marquee players because the
sport has been devastated by guys one and done. We
don't you turn on the game yesterday, and you love bastball.
(35:17):
How many of the guys did you actually know that
we're playing? Not many. You're you're cheering for laundry, that's
what you're doing, and you're cheering. I was hoping Tree
had a long run, just because I was excited about
his game and watching him. Okay, so for eighton so
so there were people that would like to compare him,
and his style is is similar, at least in the college,
(35:37):
to Steph Curry. UM, I've talked to people like, well,
you know, it might be closer to Jimmer for debt.
What do you what do you think he's I do
think he is probably boom or bust where he's gonna
either be really good, maybe not not Steph Curry, but
really good, or just a nondescript backup. Um. I don't
(35:59):
think Jim or for debt. I think his passing ability,
his court vision is very good. I think he has
that over for debt, he obviously has a decent handle,
will get better, I believe. UM. I have talked to
I haven't talked to most scouts in the league, but
I've talked to several and I have yet to find
one that loves him. Uh, most of the ones I've
(36:22):
talked to don't like him. One told me a few
days ago he's a backup point guard in the NBA.
One just texted me earlier today. No way, he's Steph Curry.
Doesn't like him. You know. Look, I understand that Steph
Curry comparisons because his game at this level, he plays
just like Steph. You know, can finish at the rim.
(36:43):
I thought you, I don't know if you agree. I
thought he was a good finisher in college. Obviously, the
shooting range, the quick release, even the carelessness. I mean,
Steph turns it over a lot. You know, he didn't
even turn over a lot. He didn't turn over a
lot and as much. But he also played off the
ball a lot in college, where his tray has the
ball constantly in his hands. And let's be fair, Trey
(37:04):
is playing against much different competition than Steph. Did. I
mean Steph was in the Southern Conference Wolford Childe of
Charleston all that Trey was going against legitimate teams in
the Big twelve, and halfway through the season, once he
established himself as this collegiate superstar, the the entire defenses
were focused and geared towards stopping him, and he's still
(37:27):
produced at a high level. So look, I agree with
you that he is far from a sure thing. You
can never with a small guard say he's definitely going
to be this or that. I thought Kenny Anderson was
gonna be the next Isaiah Thomas. You know, you never
know what a guy that's small, So I wouldn't say
he's gonna be Steph. But I tell you what, if
(37:49):
I'm picking between seven and twelve, I would I would
take the risk. I think he'd be worth the risk
for the potential reward to draft him in one of
those I could look. A lot of lottery picks don't
pan out. I don't want to be like flipping with
the value of a lottery pick, but there are tons
that don't. I'd say more often than not, they don't
(38:11):
pan out, So I would be willing to take the risk.
When you look at the way Steph Curry has changed
the game, If this guy could be three quarters of
Steph Curby, then that's pretty good. It's it's going to
be it's going to be fascinating. The interesting thing to
me is that Oklahoma has an athlete in basketball and
in football who people want to compare them to guys
(38:33):
that have guys that are a little bit different than
the traditional guy that's made it. And you know, we
want to compare um Baker Mayfield to Russell Wilson. We
want to or Drew Brees right when you know he
might be more case Keenum, same offense as Keenum and
he runs around back there a lot. Is a great
college leader, but does his skill set actually transfer? The
(38:56):
same thing here in basketball where we so want to
find the next Steph Curry that we may draft him
thinking he's next STEPH Curry and putting way too big
and onus on him. All right, here, here's what I'm
gonna do, Chris. I appreciate you joining this course. You
can see Chris all throughout and here him on the
weekend of the time, the weekend show, uh one to
five Pacific? What is that four to eight Eastern time?
(39:19):
Fox Sports Trader Coming next, I'll tell you why Trey
Young should not go to the NBA draft, even though
he'll be a lottery pick. It's a very simple decision
that why Richard Sherman can't quit the Seahawks. What up
welcome in this is the herd wherever you may be listening,
however you may be making us part of your day.
Thanks so much. I'm Doug Gottlie billing in for Colin Cowhard,
(39:43):
the supremely talented and just cool to hang out with.
Christine Lahy, You're cool to hang out with, as I'm
a good hang I was just gonna say, I respect
your shoe game, and then I looked down and I
saw that you're not wearing any I actually know my
shoe game. My shoes are nice. I got these flying
in Air Force ones. But but I'm so comfortable in here.
(40:05):
I have I got I took my shoes off and
watching the ball games. I'm talking to you, I'm hanging
out with people. I got jews, I got coffee, I
got my my phone hooked up. Like I'm like, I'm
so at home here. I'm just it's it's awesome. So
I did take off my shoes. I apologize. If you
smell something, don't. I'm far enough away from you I
can't smell anything. That was that was That was that
was me. I want to get to Richard Sherman and
(40:27):
why he's doing the thing that Christine can. I'm sure
relate to on some level, he's doing the thing that
men should never do. I'll tell you in the second
that's what's called a tease. Get that, get that one.
Get in one second. I do want to, I do,
I do want to period stop on the Tray Young thing.
So if you don't know who Tray Young is, he's
a freshman played at Oklahoma. They lost in overtime to
(40:50):
Rhode Island in the first game yesterday, and he led
the country in scoring and assist as a freshman. What's
never happening before now. Some of it is we need
to relook how we look at stats because he dominated
the ball so much that the stats become skewed. It's
much like James Harden or last year Russell Westbrook. You
(41:12):
know when you when when the ball, when when every
play emanates from your hands on a a high percentage
of possessions, You're gonna score more points, You're gonna have
more assists, you're gonna have more turnovers. Because they're just
more and more and more, more and more possessions in
games now. So I'm not completely trying to assail his stats.
(41:33):
I'm just trying to give them context. If you play
a ninety possession game. You're and you dominate the basketball,
You're gonna have better stats than a team that plays
uh seventy possession game and they play more of a
team game. Trey Young started like a house of fire
and petered out at the end. He actually didn't play
terribly Sja played, played quite well within himself, took a
(41:55):
couple of terrible threes in overtime, couldn't really get in
the lane, and Oklahoma succumbed to E. C. Matthews and
Danny Hurley's Rhode Island rams. Since February tenth, he shot
below from the field and below from three point range.
People started to figure him out. And so now the
(42:17):
big question is do you go pro? Right? And there's
this assumption they, oh, yeah, he's gotta go pro. Everybody's
gotta go pro. If you don't go pro, there's something
wrong with you. That's kind of how we've made these
players feel like there's somehow inferior two guys that do
decide to become NBA players. What's fascinating to me is
(42:40):
here's a player who grew up like so many young players,
idolizing Steph Curry. You know, people think of Steph Curry's
run to the Lead eight as the moments before he
declared for the NBA draft. Steh Clarry did not declare
for the NBA draft. After going to Lead eight and
nearly taken down Kans, he declared, And that was a
sophomore year. It was after his junior season when they
(43:02):
went to the n I T that Steph Curry declared
for the NBA draft. And yours truly did not think
you would be an NBA superstar. No, I didn't. Sorry,
but for whatever reason, we have decided that if you
come back or somehow there's this magic alickser in improvement
that you can only be. You can only sit from
the cup of improvement. If you go to the NBA,
(43:24):
like you know, the NBA boom, now you're becoming better.
You stay in college, you're not better. Trey Burke would differ.
There are people that bring up Jay Williams, former Duke player,
number two pick of the Chicago Bulls. Remember he won
national championship during his sophomore year, came back for his
junior year, struggled at the three throw line, and people
picked him apart. He went second in the NBA draft.
(43:46):
So at worst, at worst, by returning to Duke and
getting his degree in three years and trying to win
back to back national titles, something that only that, something
that only Duke in Florida has done in the modern
era of much basketball. At worst, he dropped one spot
in the draft one Trey Burke helped his stock. But
(44:07):
more importantly, is he ready emotionally? Is he ready for
the physicality? Like if you can't, if you can't get
better and better as the season goes on against Big
twelve competition. And I played in the league. I'm a
fan of the league, but there's not NBA guards in
that league. And he got worse and his confidence was hurt.
(44:31):
What happens when you're playing against men in the NBA,
when they're gonna expose your weaknesses and you potentially lose
that confidence. It doesn't mean it won't work if he
goes to the league. But isn't there a higher hit
rate if you stay in college, work in your body,
work in your game. Maybe your stats aren't as good,
Maybe people take shots to your game. He ain't gonna
drop very far. He can still shoot, he'll still be
(44:53):
able to pass, and there's a pretty good chance he'll
be quicker, stronger, and more active and a better finisher.
Andrew Lux stayed in extra year. How'd that work out?
Marcus Mariotta stayed in extra year? Howd it work out?
There's this narrative that either you leave or they pick
you apart and somehow you fall, and that just isn't accurate.
(45:14):
And it's not like he plays a sport to which
injury is really an issue. His dad raped for young
who was a really good player. I played against him,
he played Texas Tech when I was at Oklahoma State.
Said as much as I would like to see him
growing mature and continue playing in college, I think the
type of season he had it scares me to think
of him coming back and not duplicating it and having
to deal with the backlash of that. It is what
it is. I'm gonna be honest. If he comes back
(45:36):
and he doesn't leave the country in points and assist again,
he's averaging thirty and ten, what's going to happen? What's
going to happen? Nothing? And still go to the NBA.
But you'll be more ready to contribute right away. Ray
should know this, okay, because he was an NBA player
and I was an NBA player and fighting your way
(45:57):
through the minor leagues and coming off the bench when
you've ever come off the bench or fight your way
against men to kind of make it in the league.
As a hard deal, it's better off to be absolutely
go to finishing school one more year or two more years.
There is no penalty for returning to school and having
an unbelievable college career. But unfortunately, we we've decided that
(46:21):
you're somehow a failure if you don't leave early. And then,
oh yeah, by the way, NBA teams that want to lose,
what do they do They play their young players because
they know the young players can't really compete when you
want to win games. All right, let me get to
Richard Sherman. So, Richard Sherman, the man who negotiated his
own contract to leave the Seattle Seahawks. After getting cut
(46:44):
by the Seahawks, he went out and negotiated a deal
with the San Francisco forty Niners. Um, he went on
the Thomahawk Me Tomahawks, Thomahawk, My bad. That was a
Ron Burgundy moment. It right there, I'm Ron Burgundy. He
went on the Tomahawk podcast. I know is never mind
(47:06):
Tomahawk Podcast to discuss the changing philosophy in Seattle. Take
a listen. It was kind of philosophical on his part.
You know a lot of us have been there for six, seven,
eight years, and this philosophy is more filed for college,
you know, four years. God's rotated and rotate out. Uh.
And so you know, we we we had kind of
(47:27):
heard all the stories. We had kind of heard all this,
you know, every every every story, every funny anecdote that
he had. And you know, and and honestly, honestly, because
he just recycled them and their in their cool stories
and they're you know, they're great for for team chemistry
and building, etcetera, etcetera. But we had, we had literally
heard him all we could. We could recite him. Uh.
(47:48):
This sounds incredibly condescending. Now. Look, part of it was
he was on the Tomahawk podcast, But part of it
was here he is married to or at least dating
a new woman, and he's talking about his ex. That's
what he's doing. He's talking about his ex and he's like,
you know, what I've done all that? You know, it
was all the same. Every dinner conversation was the same
(48:11):
every every co mingling after dinner was the same. It's
it's just like he was. He was patronizing Pete Carroll,
who won a Super Bowl and should have won a
second Super Bowl, completely turned around the Seattle Seahawks. And
if what he's doing and getting rid of, got rid
(48:31):
of Darryl Bubble, that offensive coordinator, Chris Richard gone, Michael
Bennett gone, Richard Sherman gone, Jimmy Graham gone, Paul Richardson gone,
Sheldon Richardson gone, like honestly, it was Richard Sherman the
only one who did not know that they needed a change.
They were down forty two to nothing to the L. A.
Rams forty two nothing to the L. A. Rams at
(48:53):
home Seattle twelveth man arguably considered the most difficult place
in the National Football League, in the National Football League
to play. And if you think that the rest, you
can judge Pete Carroll's intelligence in terms of letting go
of these players based upon what he got in return,
(49:14):
not much for Michael Bennett and what Richard Sherman got
in the open market. If Richard Sherman, if he's giving
away gold and Richard Sherman, why Richard Sherman signed a
one year team friendly deal that might be worth seven
million dollars. Why because the rest of the league believes
that the Seahawks are old and that they their parts
(49:35):
needed to be refreshed. Like he didn't want clip Able
to hurt his neck, you know, he didn't want that
to happen, Cam Chancellor. He didn't want these guys to
potentially retire. But this has become a young man's league.
He's not. Richard Sherman's not wrong. You do need to
turn over your roster every four to five years because
(49:56):
the amount of physical contact you take, the beat you take.
Richard Sherman's own body broke down on him. He towards
achilles tendon. No one has any idea what he's gonna
look like when he plays. He's not gonna be ready
to work out until August. Here's an interesting thought on
Richard Sherman. Here here's an interesting thought Richard Sherman had
about a Hall of Famer at the end of his career.
(50:18):
They say, maybe maybe this guy is gonna see the
next guy. Instead of saying, you have Hall of Fame
talents in your secondary, how about you ride this out?
Could be like Pittsburgh saying, you know, Troy Pallamalu is great,
but you know, let's figure out with this guy behind
Troy and figure it out from there. How did it
end up for the Pittsburgh Steelers when they wrote out
Troy Polamalo, right, I mean two thousand and eleven after
(50:44):
the knee injury. He came back and was an All Pro.
But then it was off the cliff. When guy's age,
they go off the cliff. And I tend to believe
that if the Seahawks, remember Richard Sherman called the Seahawks,
he's like, bah Man, here's the San Francisco deal? Do
you want me to like? No? In addition to which,
let's be honest with your Germans a pain in the ass, right,
you call out your offensivecording for his play calling when
(51:05):
you're a defensive player, and then you're a borderline guy
in terms of if they want to bring you back
because the money that you make, and you tell your
Achilles tendant bye bye. If you don't think that plays
a Pardner, you're crazy. But like Richard Sherman is doing
that thing where he's talking about the ex girlfriend, I
understand he went on a podcast because he wants he
(51:27):
wants to defend himself and say, look, this is a
philosophical thing. It's not a talent thing. He's saying, I
still got it. Don't worry about it. I'm in San Francisco. Like,
here's the dude who's vengeful. That's why you say I'm
with San Francisco. Here's a dude who's arrogant. That's why
you negotiate a contract yourself. He's one of those guys
that everybody's told is really smart. He really smart for
(51:48):
a football player. Whoa No, he's really smart for a
football player. You know what I couldn't do. I can't
I can't operate the cameras. I can't produce this TV show.
I've never done that before. You're gonna the first time
you negotiate a contract can be your own contract and
possibly your last contract in the NFL. It's the dumbest
thing I've ever heard of. You hire a guy who's
professional agents to negotiate your contract. That's what you do.
(52:11):
He's smart at football, He's probably smart at life. But
but there's a specific skill requirement and a level of
of experience needed to negotiate everyone. I've I've talked to
you in the NFL is like, dude, that's not a
good deal he signed. He got fleeced because he's an
amateur walking into a professional game. That's what happens. They're like, Oh,
(52:33):
that's a great idea. Represent yourself, no middleman, no funny stuff.
They're like, hold on a second, we'll be right back
with your contract offer. They closed the door and they're like,
up top, that's what I'm talking about. A lawyer look
at it. I bet a lawyer looked at it. A
lawyer might have looked at the details of the contract,
but the actual way which you negotiate and how you
get interest from around the league. Here's no leverage created.
(52:56):
He created zero leverage. Remember I might here what the
media said, he might visit San Diego. I talked to
the he might visit the Chargers. The Charges had three
cornerbacks last year. They had to pay one of them.
They didn't want Richard trem there's no interest. If you're
going to create leverage, you gotta go visit that place
and get an offer, then visit another place and get
an offer. You don't sign with the first place you
(53:18):
go to. Now what he does that unless they give
you a whole run offer. Maybe he really liked them
and it wasn't all about the money. Does it have
to always be about the money? You have to date
a million people just to find the right one. Why
didn't you take a pay cut to Seattle? Why didn't
you say, look, i'll play for whatever it's not? Maybe
he will clearly he wanted to leave because he didn't
feel so great about I think they wanted him, that
(53:40):
they wanted him, They thought they might want to remember
he was on the trade block. If anybody wanted to
come and pay that freight last year, they could have
had him in the off season. And then he said
some things this year. Then he tours Achilles Tendant and
they had a disappointing year. They got beat up at times.
They needed a change. But the idea of trying to like, hey,
this is when when you say college guy to an
(54:02):
NFL coach who's won a Super Bowl, Okay, that is
a slight. You know, he's a he's a college guy.
That that's not it. You know, that's that's that's not
a term of endearment. That's like telling a coach there
you're an he's an interim coach, not real coach. That's
not a teacher, it's a substitute teacher. Right. And he's
(54:23):
not a he's not a police officer. He's a security guard.
That's what he's saying about Pete Carroll. Right, We've heard
all the stories. It's a college guy. That college stuff works, right.
Or he saw that his team was old. Everybody knew
they needed to change. They got obliterated by the Rams
forty two seven down, forty two nothing, They got embarrassed.
(54:45):
The Rams are getting better, the Niners are getting better.
Arizona is kind of caught in the middle, and he
knew he had to make a change. That's it, that's
all this about. It's just a business decision. But instead
Richard Sherman is taking shots at his X, which anyone
who's been on a date, and I'm sure you have
with somebody who has an X, it's the last thing
you want about. Yeah. If they start talking about the
X in the first date, that's out. Yeah all right, listen, man,
(55:09):
if you want to date Christine, how you know, don't
talk about the X at least in the first date
that I want to know. You were dating women, right,
we're dating women everybody, nobody in prison, Nobody wants to
know why they broke up because it tells you a
lot about what you could be getting yourself into. You
just you just not on the first date. Yeah, because
you don't want them to be like bashing their X,
(55:30):
because that's bad. That means they're not over it or
something crazy. That's that's clearly he's not over to be
still in love with their X. Yeah. I think he's
still in love with the idea of the X now.
But I don't know if this is true in this case.
I think it's very possible that maybe he feels like
he was slighted by Pete Carroll and he wants to
expose the truth. Right, that's what I say. He's still
(55:51):
not over it's Pete Carroll says in the playing field. Okay,
so you're you're kind of into the talking about the X.
You're kind of of This conversation just depends. It depends
on the situation. I can see both sides. I want
to take a strong stand there. It's not my hot
take of the day. I can see both sides coming
up next. Kirk Cousins is the highest paid quarterback in
(56:14):
the National Football he's highs paid player in the National
Football League, but he's about to face something in Minnesota
he hasn't faced in his career. I'll tell you what
it is next. Dot gottlieb In for Colin. This is
(56:34):
the herd DeMarcus uh bargainery. I'll get to you in
one second on Twitter. Help me make my point. If
you think a train will stop when sees your car
on the tracks, You're right, it will about a mile
after it hits. You said, don't try and beat it,
because statistics show you might lose. Stop trains can't. Uh.
(56:57):
He says, Uh, You're the perfect reply. I's been for Colin.
Thank you, appreciate that. Appreciate that a lot um. Both
of you say literally the dumbest things, like Richard Sherman
is smart for a football player. He went to Stanford
actually graduated, Like I can't stand these hot takes hot takes?
Uh you say for just clout, I'll say it again.
(57:17):
He is not a contract lawyer. He is not an agent,
and the first contract and you negotiate should not be
possibly your last contract in nash Football League, especially coming
off a torn a killings tenan and doing so without
any sort of leverage. So, yeah, he's very bright for
a football player. I don't know if he's very bright
for an agent or for a contract lawyer. I do
(57:40):
know that you don't want to make that your first one, right,
you just don't. And by all, by by every estimation,
he got fleeced in that deal. He got below whatever
market value would be because he never really went out
on the market. He signed the first place he went,
and that's a mistake. And he did it more probably
(58:00):
because of vengeance. He's obviously still upset about it. Uh,
kirk Cousins is a j bow of the Jaguar is
gonna join us upcoming in like six seven minutes. We'll
get to Christine with the news in a moment. So
I was thinking about the kirk Cousins press conference yesterday
when he's announced as um a Minnesota Viking, and and look,
(58:25):
so much of how we're viewed is based upon our expectations, right,
So much of how we're viewed is based upon our expectations.
And because of those expectations, we can we're judged if
we're a success or a failure. When kirk Cousins was
(58:47):
in d C, remember he was taken in the same
draft as r G three. R G three, they moved up,
They trade a bunch of picks away, moved up, took him,
and as high as the expectations were for a Heisman
Trophy winner, r G three welcomed them, and he led
him to the playoffs, and they seemed to be a
completely different franchise. When Kirk Cousins took over. He was
(59:10):
a fourth round pick in the exact same draft. He
was aut of Michigan State, kind of a nondescript guy,
and he was somebody that you could even find a
little bit of sympathy for. Never really had a running game,
wasn't surrounded by great wide receivers. His own head coach
seemed to have trouble buying in to Kirk Cousins being
the long term solution. Bruce Allen, the president of the team, couldn't,
(59:32):
as we pointed out to you in the off season,
couldn't even uh uh make it in coming upon himself
to learn that his name was Kirk, not Kurt Cousins.
Like in many ways, he was slighted in many ways.
He felt like the backup quarterback who just so happened
to be the starter in an awesome offense for an
awesome coach and put up awesome stats. He never felt
(59:55):
the love, so he goes to Minnesota where he feels
the love financially and emotionally. They wrapped their arms around
We had three quarterbacks and we got ridy you. We
got rid of him because we want you. We were
one game away from reaching the super Bowl, and we
want you. What they wouldn't do for you, give you
a long term contract, we're willing to do for you.
(01:00:16):
And he returned the favor. The story today is that
he got twenty eight million a year from the Vikings.
He turned down the highest bidder, which was the New
York Jets at thirty million dollars a year. Take a listen,
by the way to what our friend Colin Cowherd had
to say the host of this show in regards to
what what he thinks Kirk Cousins does for the Minnesota Vikings.
(01:00:37):
He is a B to a B plus on his
best nights. He's not an A. He's not quite as
talented as Matt Ryan. I don't think he's quite as
talented as Alex Smith. But he's good and I think
he gets to a super Bowl with Minnesota. I do.
He's better than case Keenum. He's not not as good
as Philip Rivers. But I've watched super Bowls for forty years.
(01:00:58):
If you have Minnesota's rawsters, with those receivers, that defense,
that coaching, you can get to a super Bowl. Okay,
and that's what you're in this game for. Can you
get to a super Bowl? Minnesota now can't. Okay. So look,
all of that I generally agree with, but you have
to remember what what Colin just said is the thought
(01:01:19):
in Minnesota. Hey, dude, we were this close before. Now
we pay you more money than anybody else makes in
the sport to win us one more game. Forget about
the fact that the Green Bay Packers didn't have their
quarterback last year because he was hurt. The Chicago Bears
started a rookie quarterback, they had the Glennon disaster, and
there in rebuild mode. All of this helps the fact
(01:01:40):
that you're playing six games in division, you know, against
depleted teams. Forget about the fact you're playing to play
your first place schedule. Hey, they also had a miracle.
Otherwise they would have lost the Saints. Traditionally, a terrible
road team would have lost the Saints at home in
the playoffs. He's not wrong that in theory, in theory,
(01:02:01):
Kirk Cousins should make the Vikings a super Bowl team,
But that raises the level of expectations. We're always told
under promise and over deliver. The Vikings by giving him
this contract are overpromising, and what always happens when you
over promise the under delivery is not well received. And
(01:02:26):
if he wanted to love from Minnesota, he will. He'll
get the love until he takes the field, and then
there are expectations of yards passing and winning one more
game the playoffs, and those aren't realistic. Even if you
listen to Colin and I agree with him, he's a
big plus maybe a big quarterback, so he is. He's fine.
(01:02:46):
He just said he's below Alex Smith, who no one
actually believes you can win a super Bowl with Alex Smith.
Why Niners didn't, Chiefs didn't. Both came close, both went
with different options in order to take the next step.
Here's Christine with the news turn this is the herd
line news. But we know that j R. Smith hasn't
(01:03:07):
been quit a bit of a happy camper this season. Um,
he's had the soup Gate, remember soup Happy that he
lost his starting job to Dwyane Wade and then now
he's lost it to Kyle Korver and Obi Rodney Hood
once he gets healthy. And Tyler lewis saying that he
had a conversation with j R. Smith about it and
(01:03:29):
that it was good. He said it was good they
talked about the lineup change. But now j R. Smith
is saying, no, we didn't talk. He sent me a
text and I told him, no problem. I didn't know
that it was a talk. But that's all right. I'm
not upset about it. I just wish there would have
been more dialogue. I guess there's trouble in calves Land.
Lebron might be all happy and chipper right now, but
(01:03:52):
there's something going on. No, they're not healthy, they're not winning,
and they're not getting along outside of that. Outside that,
Mrs Lincoln, how was the show? Do you think that
that has any chance of changing in time for the playoffs? Um? Do?
I think I think it does. But I look, my
general thought is that both Eastern and Western Conference, the Warriors,
(01:04:12):
it's going to be more difficult for them. They're still
the overwhelming favorite, assuming they're back healthy, and that's a
big assumption. Assuming they're back healthy, they're still the favorite.
But I don't think they're gonna run through it in
twelve games the way they did last year. And I
don't think that the Calves are gonna run through it
in thirteen games. But the Calves obviously seem a lot
more fragile than the Warriors do um and both are injured,
(01:04:33):
but even whole, I think the Warriors are are far
more solid, even though the West is tougher. Absolutely, But
do you think the Calves are getting out of the East.
I'm not convinced. Look, they still have the best player
in the East, but that doesn't make the best team
in the East. And this is how it, This is
how it always seems to end with Lebron so, uh,
this is weird Kyrie leaving and they tried to fix it,
(01:04:55):
and they when they remember they fixed it, like oh,
we're all so much so and then this and then
this time I sat in this couch with Colony, like, look, Rodney,
who I believe he started putting the Rodney Hood ballance
for the Hall of Fame after two games. Now we
know who they are, Fairness, they're not healthy. Rodney hood
(01:05:15):
has been hurt, They've had other injuries. They don't have
Kevin Love back. Well, you have soup being thrown in
the locker room. That's a bad sign. Who throws soup?
It is a weird thing to throw. What's your favorite
kind of soup? Mots of ball soup the good choice? Yeah?
I really like mots of ball? Sup? What's yours? Um? Honestly,
this is gonna be gross to some people. I like
cream and mushroom soup. That's disgusting. Yes, I like a
(01:05:38):
good lobster bisc as well. Okay, so you like the
creamy I do. It's terrible for you. I like a
good mots of ball chicken neodle soup as well. Well,
that's two different things. Mots of ball is different than
chicken neot all. Well, it's kind of the same soup,
just with the mots of ball. He paid to be
that guy. Okay, go ahead, what else you got? Do
you get the same when you order chicken noodle soup?
But green blots or cantors that doesn't come with the
(01:05:59):
mots of ball on It doesn't technically, no, but it's
the same. Super I believe it's the same liquid say
um Kirk Cousins signed a three or eighty four million
dollar contract with the Vikings, and he's saying that it
was not the team that offered him the most money. However,
his agent says it was important for Cousins to surpass
Jimmy Garoppolo's contract, which he did, but did not take
(01:06:20):
the biggest offer on the table. They're not saying what
team that was that offered him more money because it
said that he chose the Vikings because it came down
to his desire to win. Sounds like the Jets. That's
the word on the street said. It suggests, sound like
it's the right choice to me. Right, I would tend
to agree. Once you're in the twenty eight million dollar range,
(01:06:43):
like it's monopoly money. Right, he'sion dollars the last two
years because the guy is the fourth round pick. Like
to actually win. Plus you play indoors, you know, helps
your longevity helps helps the zip on a football. He
doesn't have a great arm. Yeah, probably more endorsements about endorsementsment,
you know you gonna you're gonna have a talented running
back sheeper to live there also, that actually might make
(01:07:05):
up for a millionaire two for a reason. Yes, oh
it is. It's freezing cold. No, but I do have
to go to Minneapolis in a couple of weeks. It's
great now. Now once you get to the spring, it's awesome.
I'm pretty sure it's gonna be freezing. Do you think
so overnight, because that's when I'm shooting overnight. All right,
(01:07:26):
California'm gonna bring my winter jacket I've seen. And some soup,
some mut ball soup. And finally, there's apparently an NFL
team that hired a private investigator to follow Baker Mayfield.
Mayfield received an alert from a trusted source that he
had a tail on him in Norman because they wanted
to find out how he spends his nights near his
(01:07:48):
old stomping grounds. Maybe I'm naive. I didn't know that
this was a thing. Is this a thing? It's called
doing your due diligence? They hire private investigators. Guess that's
a great I guess like like like like listen, listen.
Justin Blackman was a great wide receiver, bolitnical Off Award
winner at Oklahoma State. I didn't know he had a problem,
and apparently the Jaguars didn't know he had a problem either.
(01:08:10):
I mean he he barely did anything ever for the
Jacksonville Jaguars. Probably wouldn't have happened had they put a
tail on him and figured out what he was doing
leading up to the draft. The questions about Baker Mayfield
are off the football field. I was told on the
white board he was a magician, okay, and he's a
football savant. He's under size, he does have a good arm,
doesn't have a huge hand. Not a great athlete. You
(01:08:31):
want to see, like you got to see the intangibles
as well as at TANGI. You gotta see the whole picture.
Do the guys the tale is interesting, that's like a
seventies movie. Let's if you have a private investigator, is
you have a tail? They're following you. They've got to
see what you're doing. But do the guys at the
top who are probably gonna go to the top of
the draft, they all just know that they're probably being
(01:08:51):
followed for a while. I don't know, like in which case,
like you'd be on your best behavior, yeah, or just
if you're a guy that doesn't do anything wrong, you
don't have to worry about it. Here's you're gonna follow me.
I'm going to Walmart. I'm going to Walmart. Then I'm
going to the gym. Then I'm going home to take
a nap. Then I'm going to my girls house. And
that's Christine with the news. Well that's the news, and
thanks for stopping by the third line. When shopping for
(01:09:14):
car insurance, consider this. Guico has been saving people money
on car insurance for over seventy five years. So if
you're serious about saving it's simple, go to Geico dot
comic for seventy five years, they know how to save
you money. Coming up next, A J. Boye is gonna
join us. He goes from undrafted free agent to a
second team All Pro. We want to talk to him
about that journey, plus what it's like to come this
(01:09:34):
close to being the Patriots and winning it and go
and playing for a Super Bowl. That's up next time.
Doug Gottlieb, this is the Hurt. Doug Gottliebi in for
Colin here on The Herd, Fox Sports one and uh
the I Heart Radio app. He went from an undrafted
free agent out of Central Florida to becoming one of
the two shutdown corners in the defensive backfield. For the
(01:09:55):
Jacksonville Jaguars A J. Booyer, he joins us in the herd.
Get on him near a J. Yeah. Alright, So this,
I mean, it's your your journey and which is still
kind of beginning. Is kind of crazy. Right. Take me
back to to the end of the draft when Houston
called and wanted to sign you as an undrafted free agent.
(01:10:16):
What are the emotions like of not getting picked but
no one, you're gonna get a shot? Yeah, my emotions,
it was kind of I was everywhere. It was tough. Um.
I didn't even expect to go to Houston. They didn't
draft any corners, and luckily my agent represented one of
our DV coaches at the time and he kind of
did me a favor and they looked out for me.
So when I got there, I just was waiting for
(01:10:37):
the opportunity. I was. We had rookie mating camp. I'm
first in line. I'm ready to go against hop right then,
because he was the first round pick, and it was
just fun just compete against him every year. And I
learned a lot of things over there in Houston. I
was just I was excited for everything that made me
a better player, all right, Hopp is DeAndre Hopkins, obviously
a star at at Clemson. I'm sure you'd watched him
a bunch during your time at Central Florida. Um, but
(01:11:00):
when when did you know? Because like, look, I remember
I was in rookie minicamp with the Lakers, and I remember,
like you walk in every day and you see all
the pictures and at first you're like, man, I'm just here,
I'm just one of I'm just kind of a group
of dudes, and then you start to think in your mind,
like wall, I could I could do this, and the
other to me got cut. Obviously that the same didn't
happen for you. Was there a moment to which you're like, oh, yeah,
(01:11:20):
this is this is gonna stick. Um, Honestly, the first day,
like I said, I went against Hopp, and I knew
what I was capable of. I made a lot of plays,
especially in high school, college and everything that worked out,
but I just knew what I was capable of. I
made plays against him in camp, and then I was
o t a s. I was able to match up
against Andre Johnson. I made plays as him as undrafted rookie,
and it just kept bringing my confidence up and I
(01:11:42):
just kept going with it. So from the outside looking in,
it might be like I was, it was tough. I
didn't believe in myself, but I always knew that I
felt I was one of the top corners in the league.
You come over to jacksonally signed a free agent agency deal,
and it was part of what they thought was their
kind of next step, and it ended up being the
next step. That like though, to go to a place
where they just had a culture of super talented guys,
(01:12:06):
especially on the defensive side of the football. But man,
Jacksonville hadn't never won anything. Um, What's what was that
like when you first got to Jacksonville and you hadn't
one They hadn't one anything. Um, I wasn't really focused
on that. I knew what I was capable of, and
I've seen Calais play. I watched Barry when he was
with Dallas and just bringing us. We knew that we
(01:12:26):
could change this culture. And then just the talent that
they already had with Jalen, Telvin Smith, everybody. We we
just started competing. I saw how these guys was working,
especially with coach Maroning and Couughlan coming in and just
bringing that culture and that discipline. It has really helped out.
So really the main focus for the team was just
to tune out the noise from the outside and it
started the show. We started believing the process. Did any
(01:12:46):
of the guys that had been there previously? Was that
hard because as you mentioned, you got Clariss camp, but
you got Barry Church to coach. Coughlin comes in like everybody, Hey,
we're coming in because we're gonna fix things. But you know,
it is like you're at place like, hey, we we
were we were pretty good. You know, we're we're doing
all right defensively. Anyway, was there any pushback from guys
that are already there? Um, I wouldn't say it was
(01:13:08):
any pushback. Everybody was bought in at the end of
the day. They knew that the record show they was
winning three games, not four games in the season and
things like that, so they knew something had to change.
So we all bought in, even even us that came in.
But the players that was there, they all bought in.
And you had people like Paul pause Lusky and everybody.
It was just veterans. You watched how they wore and
(01:13:29):
I started watching the older veterans and even they was
buying in showing up early. So I was told that
you guys scrimmaged the Pats right in the in the preseason,
and that was when everybody's like, oh, this this dog
a hunt, like we we got a crew here. Is
that that accurate? Yeah, that's how we felt, Um. And
at the same time, we wasn't healthy, me or Jalen
wasn't even out there practicing against him, so we was
(01:13:50):
ready to get back out there and we was making
plays against him, and we knew that we could play
with those guys, and it just started the show. Jalen
Um is very talented, and he liked to tell everybody
how talented he is. Like, when you're over on the
other side, do you hear him chirping at the other
wide receivers or which which how do you handle that? No?
I stay locked in, Um. That's one thing that we do,
(01:14:12):
especially as a defense. We know Jalen's gonna be Jalen.
He's gonna say what you say, but we have our
own responsibilities to help the team win, and we just
stay locked in and what we do. So during the game,
you can't hear, especially me, I can't hear what Jalen said,
because he on the other side of the phil. I
probably only heard it like probably once the whole season.
That was the whole like a j Green incident. I
just heard the first part as far as like Jalen
(01:14:32):
was like, who are you? And that just shows Jalen
don't got no respect for you, and he's just he's
a dog like that and that's how he feels. Um, Borrels,
you're UCF guy. Borrels obviously a UCF guy as well.
Dudes were on him in the preseason. He struggled at
times in terms of his confidence. Did you at at
that time in early in the year, when you knew
you had a really good defense, were you convinced that
(01:14:53):
guy was gonna be your quarterback? Um? I could say
probably in the preseason when they put Chat in front
of him, I didn't what was going on. I didn't
know if they was doing that to push them or
if they just believed in Chad, And either way it went.
We had the mentality that whoever was our quarterback, we
was gonna make players as a defense and just put
them in a good situation. And Blake had flashes of
why you know, we paid him the money that he
(01:15:15):
got and he especially in the playoffs, he showed up.
And now we just gotta bring it all together. We
gotta start fast, and we just gotta finish two. You know,
fifty was a fifty six or fifty three seconds ago
in the first half and they chose to take a
knee when you guys have been doing a good job defenses,
They've been moving the job, the ball offensively against New
England Patriots, was was there? Does that do anything for
(01:15:38):
the defense's emotions when you're like, we got them, we
got a chance to play at two more points and
they go conservative end of the first half in all honesty,
does that do anything emotionally for you guys in the
NFC champion your game, now, I wouldn't say that. Um,
we we had the minset. We already put up enough points.
It was up to us as a defense to you know,
finish the game. And unfortunately we didn't finish. And from
(01:15:58):
an individual standpoint, I was watching the film and I
could have done things better, uh, with my technique and everything.
So I just had to take responsibility for it. But
you know, that's the NFL. You win some games, you
lose some important games, but you have another year, and
you appreciate the grind you go to to get back
to where you want to be. One of the first
games in which we saw Jimmy Garoppolo really start to
change the Niners was against you guys. Is that real
(01:16:21):
or is that you guys just didn't have a book
on him. He's well, we we started watching film on him.
He's a good player and we've seen what he did
when he was in New England. He started those games.
But um, they just had a good team overall. I
feel like that we was looking too much into Jimmy
and everybody was looking to the quarterback situation. But you know,
they have a great coach in Shanahan, and they have
a great staff, and they just had great players and
they even added more great players with Sherman, So you
(01:16:44):
know the future is bright for them. Who's the best guy?
Like you guys, you went against a b obviously in
the playoffs that was an incredible playoff game. Uh, is
he far and away the best guy? Is there somebody
else that we we don't talk enough about that on
that level? I believe, I believe maybe is the best
in the game. Um, and I'm not just saying that
just because he had the best of me, the only
(01:17:04):
receiver really had the best of me all year. But
I feel like Keenan Allen doesn't get enough respect. I
like the way he plays, and yeah, he came back
from it. How did you win that game? I I'm
a charge your fan. How did they got two picks
in the last two minutes of the game? And still
how did you win that game? Like our our mentality,
(01:17:27):
I told you our defense, we just we had time
on the cloud. We knew we just needed some players
and making the play Malie Jackson may and we got
the fumble back and then blaking him did what they
needed to do and lambo to get points on the board.
And then over time you saw what happened with that.
And they've been trying to run that play all I
mean all games. So I've seen Travis Benjamin there and
I knew that when the ball was in the air
(01:17:47):
was mine. So I should have scored, but we still
wont you. Definitely you should have scored. I got seconds.
You said A B is the best? What about him?
Because he's he's double covered, he still gets open. What
does he do that is that that makes him more
difficult than anybody else. You come and you know he's
not the fastest receiver, he's not the biggest receiver, but
you know he does a lot of things where you
(01:18:08):
know he works hard in the off season, all this
like work that he puts in. But even when I
was watching the film after the game and the playoffs,
the catches he made, it was amazing. Like the first
one he caught one hand and was still able to
get two feet in. And then the second one, I
was in good coverage, usually I get it out. He
was able to drop his hands late and low and
it was that close and he just caught. And I
was like, man, this guy, he he's crazy. He's pretty real,
(01:18:29):
but so so too, are you. A J B A
amazing story from undrafted to All Pro. Thanks so much
for joining us here at at Fox Sports One really appreciated.
Jeff Gordon's gonna join us next OWT. But we're gonna
talk about the team that A j and the Jags
lost to upcoming next. There's supposedly a rift within the Patriots.
Why that rift is being eliminated because you have to
(01:18:50):
have everybody pulling in the same direction. I'll explain next time.
Doug Gottlieb. This is the Hurt. What I welcome in.
This is the Herd wherever you may be listening, however
you may be making this part of your day. Thanks
so much. Pay down. I screwed that thing out. It
was just thinking that it sounded like the opening to Jeopardy,
like this is Shepherd, is Jeffardy? That's Christine Lahey, or
(01:19:14):
actually I should go right, that's Christine Leahy. There we go.
Look that's Christine Lahy. This is this is Doug Gottlieb.
You're listening to the Herd on either the Herd podcast, which,
by the way, I have a new podcast on the
Herd Podcast Network. It's called All Ball, like you know,
like basketball. I thought all ball. Anyway, it's not just
(01:19:35):
all basketball. It is all basketball, but it's all ball.
I like it. It has nothing to do with the ball.
We shall that shall not be mentioned. Yeah, that one
didn't even come up. He doesn't deserve did not did
not did not come up. Anyway, Um, you can download that.
Let's do us on the I Heart Radio app. We're
here on FS one. We just, like all of you,
(01:19:55):
were watching the college basketball games, and I, like many
of you, had my bracket busted yesterday. Um I do.
I won't talk about my bracket a lot, and I'll
tell you why you shouldn't talk a lot about your
bracket up coming uh in a in a little bit.
We gotta we gotta absolute out, absolutely outstanding our for
you before we get you off to your weekend. But
(01:20:18):
I want to start with this. There is a bit
of an exodus from from New England as when Nate
Solder is now a member of the New York Giants.
We've seen other we've seen other patriots leave New England
as well. But I saw this story and I thought
it was fascinating and I I kind of get it.
(01:20:39):
You know, in order to succeed in business, and especially
in the business of sports, there's one thing that you
have to have. Like, look, I'm okay with disagreement. I'm
okay with people challenging. I think anybody who leads, whether
it's their radio show or TV show, UM, or you're
(01:21:01):
leading a company or you're leading a team, You're okay
with disagreement with a dissenting opinion. On the other hand,
when that dissenting opinion becomes one that is shared by
too many by share by more than one. By the
dissent ur they become somebody who's pulling in a different direction.
(01:21:25):
And one of the reasons that Bill Belichick has been
able to be so successful to the tune of eight
Super Bowls, he's the most successful and esteemed pro coach
in the history of modern American sports, is because he
gets guys to take less money. It's because he's not
(01:21:46):
afraid to jettison players that are past their prime and
that are coming up on a contract. Here this from
Mike Girardi, who was, of course a Boston reporter, someone
who knows is watching our show tonight's source says Bill
Bill Bill Belichick is making UH players miserable, and yes,
(01:22:08):
a lot of this ties back to Alex Guerrero. Right.
This report says that Pat's players like Gronk and Brady
are miserable that that they don't feel that Bill Belichick
appreciates the sacrifice they put in in order to put
their bodies on the line. And when I read this,
(01:22:31):
when I read this, I know why Bill Belichick is
attempting to and has essentially cut as many ties as
he can with Alex Guerrero. Look, he's got to keep
Guerrero at arms distance. He absolutely does, because he's still
a trainer for Tom Brady and Brady is his quarterback.
But if you want to know why he pulled his
sideline pass, if you want to know why he he
(01:22:51):
changed the routine and and and eliminated the on field
office and giving him carte blanche, this is the reason why.
It's not that Guerrero's medical techniques aren't ahead of the curve.
It's not that what he's saying in terms of taking
care of the body, and maybe Bill Belichick not appreciating
(01:23:12):
players bodies inaccurate. Okay, anybody who's a physical therapist, especially
a guy who's essentially an advocate for players, is going
to react as such. But the reason Bill Belichick had
to cut ties is because this guy is driving a
wedge between the players and the coach. It's simply, it's
that simple. He is not pulling in the same direction.
(01:23:36):
And look, he is allowed to act as he wants
to act, to treat his players as he wants to
treat them, to tell them whatever he wants to tell them,
but if he wants to be associated with the Patriots,
you have to be pulling in the same direction. And
he's clearly not. And while Tom Brady can be slightly
influenced mentally, Rob Gronkowski and others can be influenced far
(01:23:59):
more rely because they're a little bit more simple minded.
They don't understand the complexities of the relationship. It's a
lot like the Jedo Jedi mind trick. Doesn't work on everybody, okay,
And while this doesn't work on everybody, but if it
works on one player, and it's one player questioning Belichick
and Belichick's methods, that's too many because the Patriots, by
(01:24:21):
their own estimation, are already going to be at a
talent disadvantage because they're choosing character over talent. Belichick, if
you've read anything about who he wants to surround himself,
I want guys that want to be coached. I don't
care about having the greatest players on earth. They look
and laugh at the Pittsburgh Steelers with Antonio Brown and
(01:24:43):
and and you know, doing the Facebook thing in the
locker room and having a super talented running back, a
position to which they seem to be able to find
anyone they want off the street to fill, and instead
the Steelers are franchise tagging their running back because they
can't agree to a long term deal. They laugh at that.
That's not the Patriot a matter of fact, it wasn't
the Steeler way for a long time, and the Steelers
are kind of caught between who they want to be
(01:25:04):
and who they actually are. But when I read this
about Alex Guerrero, and for a long time people have
asked this question, like, how could you run a guy
off who had such a great relationship with Tom Brady,
who was so close to so many of the players.
This is why, sure players are miserable. Everybody's miserable, Like
(01:25:25):
that's the sport. Most people are miserable in their job.
Most most most workers who are compensated far less than
that of pro football players, are miserable with the day
to day grind of every day checking in and doing
the same thing. The difference here is you can either
act as an advocate for the team and pulling in
(01:25:47):
the right direction and stitch him up and stretch him
up and kick him back out there in the football
field and say, hey, we're gonna do better. Don't worry
about coach b He's in it for the right reasons.
Or you can be the guy that says, I know
you're miserable. The old man's lost it. He doesn't know
what he's talking about. He doesn't appreciate you. But if
you want to know why Alex Guerrero got run off
(01:26:08):
from the Patriots, this is why. Because you can pull
in the same direction or an opposite direction. And every
football coach will tell you the second you have somebody
pulling the opposite of direction, the entire stage coach gets
slowed down. That's how you get yourself run out of
the building. All right, let's um, let's change gears here.
Oh see what I did there? Change gears here for
(01:26:29):
a second. Doug got Leavin for Colin here on the Herd.
Let's go out to Fontana, California. Because as much as
we do that now, we're doing that in a little bit.
We're doing that now. Okay, good Uh, Jeff Gordon has
been waiting, been ready. I got more on the Patriots
to get to. But but he's on the Cowherd Global
Network Satellite Cup Series winner wins. He's a Hall of Famer.
(01:26:56):
And oh yeah, by the way, Bryan had and Bushy tailed,
I mean he was at least three sheets to win.
Last night as we were at the Strand House in
Manhattan Beach. Uh, that's there's a lot of makeup you
got working there. Jeff, you look a lot better today
than you did last night. We're having a little having
a little trouble with Jeff's audio, at least I'm having
trouble with Jeff's audio. Give me give me one second
as well. We'll test it up. I'm kidding, kidding. I
don't even think I saw Jeff Jeff uh drinking last night.
(01:27:21):
Can we Jeff, key, can we try you one more time?
We're we're working on it. Um. If you haven't been
paying attention to NASCAR, Bubba Wallace is the biggest story
in the sport. I mean, arguably the biggest story in
sports since Jeff Gordon finished second at the Dayton of
(01:27:43):
the African American driver and but more than anything, it's
not just that he's an African American driver. It's that
he's really good and he understands all that comes with
being uh kind of the center of the picture of
diversity for a sport that is so utterly and completely
lacked it that people have pointed to, what when are
we going to And the answer is, and I'm I'm
(01:28:05):
interested in the Bubba effect. I'm interested in that. How
are we are we doing as far as Jeff Gordon,
I know I might have quick triggered us in terms
of going out there, which is so excited to talk
to Jeff. All right, we'll still working on it. But
it's really fascinating, like in I know that that it's
it's one of those topics to which are like, are
(01:28:27):
you talking about it because he's black, You're talking about
because he's good? Like how about both? Right? That's the
great thing? And we and and this is no different
to me than the reason that the NFL is trying
to go to Mexico is trying to go to China,
has gone to Europe, to which you get topped out
(01:28:48):
in terms of your market here, right, so you go
overseas Nascar, which grew like wildfire, I mean just grew
and spread in the nineties and then seemed to seeing
a plateau and maybe even start to dip a little bit. Now. Look,
NASCAR has completely usurped like the INDI used to be
(01:29:09):
the biggest race in our in in our country, auto
sport race in our country, and it still is locally,
but nationally internationally, really nationally the brickyard is just bigger.
The ratings dwarfed out of the in five D. But
they've had some growth issues and Jeff Gordon retired, Smoke retires,
(01:29:29):
Dalren Hard Jr. Retires. I mean, any name, Danica retires,
any name you can think of, with the exception maybe
of Jimmy Johnson because he won like seven seven in
our own seven ro owd. Now I'm here in. Jeff
as retired. So in addition to struggling with growth, you
needed something to bring people, bring eyes to the DV said,
(01:29:52):
bring people back out to the track. And I feel
like Bubba Wallace is the legit, real deal, not just
because he's African American, but beca does. He's good and
has a great personality. Let's welcome back in UH, four
time Cup Series winner Jeff Gordon, Uh, Jeff Bright had Bush,
I was giving you the business earlier about drinking last
night at the Strand House. Uh is the Bubba effect?
(01:30:12):
We were we were definitely enjoying some great basketball. That
that that's true unless you're an Arizona fan. Um is
the Bubba effect? He is? It is? It? Is it tangible?
Is there starting to be kind of a different crowd
bigger crowds because of the effective Bubba Wallace on the series. Well,
you have to understand he's been around NASCAR for several
(01:30:34):
years and and has been making an impact on it
through you know, his personality and his driving ability, So
you know, what he does off the track as well
as what he does on the track. You know, I
think it's what's earned him the uh, the opportunity that
he has this year. We're at Richard Petty Motorsports. Uh,
and then he comes in with you know, a group
of other young talented drivers and and then sets the
(01:30:57):
world on fire in Daytona, the biggest race of year.
And and you know, so obviously that uh, you know,
his catapulted the popularity and and his brand to to
another level. Now. I think we all knew that, you know,
the RPM Richard Petty Motorsports is not one of the
top teams out there, and and that they're going to
(01:31:18):
struggle at some of these other tracks. But I think
what I like now is the focus is not just
on Bubba Wallace because of the diversity conversation, but also
you know about what his skill set is, what is
what his opportunity is in the sport, and so you know,
we're gonna see them continue to work really hard at
being competitive in the focus being you know, him as
(01:31:39):
a competitive driver, which he definitely has the skill set.
So you know, it's a it's a great story, but
I think there's a lot more to it than just that.
And and you know, I think we're all enjoying seeing
what he does. Okay, So so I guess here's the question. Look, Jeff,
I have an expression I think you can probably agree
with and appreciate. It's that you can't fool players, right
Like you can't fool basketball player. Yes, a basketball player
who's played with the basketball player, they tell you if
(01:32:00):
he can play. Same thing with football. I cannot fool
you and tell you a guy can drive or a
woman can drive if they can't drive. And they were
always whispers about Danica like yeah, but I don't I
don't know Kenny drive. Is Is he legit in terms
of his ability obviously not there yet, but his ability
to be a mainstay on the uncircuit, there's no doubt
(01:32:25):
about it. You know, you just have to factor in
the other, the other part of it, and that is
the team in the race. Car Um I I really
believe if you can, if RPM Motorsports can build up
their competitiveness as a race team, I definitely think that
that bubble will be able to follow. Right along with that,
I think right now his skill set is probably above
the skill set of the team, So you know, I
(01:32:47):
think that's the biggest challenge right now. But there's no doubt.
I mean, we've been watching him in trucks and an
Exfinity before he came into Cup, and last year he
ran a handful of races in the Cup level and
did extremely well. So yeah, he has the skills set. Uh,
we just gotta get all all those pieces to aligne
if we're gonna see him. Uh, you really take it
to the next level each and every weekend and compete
(01:33:09):
with some of the veteran drivers that are, you know,
really dominating the sport right now, like Kevin Harvick. Yeah,
Kevin Harvard's when the last three at forty two years old, amazing.
The auto clip five hundred four hundred is in Fontana.
Coverage begins this Sunday. Of course, you have part of
the coverage now for the third year at Fox three
pm Eastern time on Big Fox. Let me ask you
about Jimmy Johnson. Um, look, he's a former team and reviewrs.
(01:33:32):
He won this thing seven he won the he won
the Cup seven years in a row. But he's fallen
on some hard times. Um what do you attest that too? Well?
You know it's uh, I think a lot of it.
Again going back to you know, the race team, the
race car. I think Jimmy Johnson. Uh, there's been conversations
(01:33:52):
about you know, how much longer is he going to
do this? Uh? You know his age of you can
just throw all that out out the window. I mean,
this guy is an incredible physical a Uh. He's one
of the best race car drivers, is not the best
race car drivers ever sat behind the wheel of a
stock car. Uh. And right now Hendrick Motorsports, you know
is is there. They're they're in u you know kind
of stage of of getting their cars and their teams
(01:34:14):
to uh that there's a new new body style with
the Camaro zeal one this year. They're struggling, you know,
to without a little bit here earlier in this season.
But I think you're going to see them progress as
this season goes on, and Jimmy Johnson is the guy
to help them do that because of his skill set
as well as Chad Canals, his crew chief. So they're
going through some some tough times. You look, you know
last year and a half has not gone the way
that we've seen it traditionally go for Jimmy Johnson. But uh,
(01:34:37):
I have no doubt in my mind that they got
a lot of smart people of Hendrick Motorsports and he's
one of the best that they'll they'll they'll find their
way back to the front. Alright, horses for courses, Fontana
there's a setup help help Kevin Harvick, who's won three
in a row. Is there someone else who Fontana sets
up best for? Well, this is a high speed two
mile racetrack, you know, over over to under miles per
(01:35:00):
enter in the corner here and it's it's one of
the oldest surfaces on the entire circuit, and so you
you really see tire wear and in the car sliding
around hit those high speeds around these big sweeping corners.
So I think that you know it is gonna play
out well for Kevin Harvick. Those guys are on top
of their game on every aspect from pit strategy, pit stops,
(01:35:22):
Kevin's driving ability, the car just has incredible speed on
the short runs and the long runs. I think he's
gonna be the guy to beat. But if anybody can
knock him off of this, uh, this run that he's in,
it's Kyle Bush. I think you know this is a
track that suits him very well. He's been second to
Kevin the last couple of races, so look for him
to be pretty strong this weekend. Jeff Gordon check him
(01:35:42):
out the Auto Club four hundred. He recovers quite well
from uh, from alcohol poisoning. I'm kidding, Jeff, I'm I'm
totally giving you the business. Uh this Sunday three pm
on Fox. You actually do look great considering the fact
that you were at least up watching ball in Manhattan
Beach and you're out in in Fontana. Thanks so much
for joining us. We appreciate it. It was hard to leave.
(01:36:03):
I must say, it was hard to leave. Its a
pretty nice set up there that the Fox had. Great
to see you last night and good to talk to
you today. Likewise, Jeff like the most Christie, the most
unassuming like superstar I have I've ever been around. Like,
I've been like three or four different events with him,
and he just kind of walks in. He's like, hey,
name's Jeff whatever, like there, like Jeff Gordon, Jeff Jeff Gordon,
(01:36:25):
Like yeah, yeah, yeah, Jeff Jeff Gordon. Nice nice human being.
It's it's it is nice. It's refreshing. Absolutely. Uh. I
don't care about a couple of things in your life,
right mind specifically or yeah yeah, like like there are
things that we said that we might no, but we
(01:36:46):
really don't care about, and one of them always plays
out right around this time of year. We'll get to
that upcoming next. If you if you think a train
will stop if it sees your car on the tracks,
(01:37:06):
You're right. It will about a mile after it hits you.
So don't try and beat it because statistics show you
might lose. Stop trains can't. Texas and m just took
down Providence the big extincts. Right, that's what we do. Right,
You're one team losing your conference and also in your
conference is terrible. Um, the n s A teraminant is here.
It is, in fact, my favorite time of the year.
(01:37:29):
I played in this thing. I covered it for fifteen years,
still covering now. You can follow me on Twitter. I'll
do I do live feeds before and after games. I
got my blazing five picks for you, help picks for
tonight called picks for tomorrow. I know a lot of
you were on in Vegas and there's a bunch of
TVs and sports books and you're like, why has got
leeb On there when I'm trying to watch the game.
(01:37:50):
But um, Christina, I have a a little secret for
people that uh, I need to share with the people.
It's not going to be a secret anymore. We don't
care about your bracket. We don't care about your bracket
and stopping me to tell me my brackets a mess
(01:38:12):
or my brackets awesome, unless I'm in your bracket pool,
unless you're taking actual money out of my wallet and
putting it into your wallet. Okay, I really really really
don't care. And it's not out of bitterness. It's not
because I had Arizona in the championship game. All right,
(01:38:32):
maybe a little bit, but not really out of bitterness.
It's more just that don't care. And here a little
side note here before we get to what I think
it relates to in life. It's I couldn't care less.
It's big pet peeve of mine. You don't say I
could care less, because I could care less means I
actually care. I could care less. You say I couldn't
(01:38:52):
care less. There's not an amount less I could care
that about your bracket pool and um looked other things
in life that are similar to the bracket. And while
we're letting you in on secrets, here's some more. I
don't care about your vacation, nobody, No, No, you don't.
I don't. You don't care about the experiences of a
(01:39:14):
lifetime that I had. You care about the experiences of
lifetime you had? Well, I want to know what they
did so that I can take notes. Maybe I want
to go to the same place or do the same
thing that's different than the vacation that's giving you a
tip on a place to stop. I want to say. Okay.
So first we flew to New York, and then we
flew to Greece, and we got off in grease. Look
at these pictures. This is the airport, this was customs.
(01:39:37):
And then we went to and we went to the
acropolis and oh my god, check out this guy who
we saw the acropolis. I don't care. What if he's
a really attractive guy, different than you care about the
guy and you're just only feigning interest in the in
the vacation. Don't care about a vacation. Here's another thing.
I don't only care about your kids. Picture your kids.
(01:39:58):
I don't I care about my kids. My kids are
awesome for me. You don't really care about my kids.
If I had a baby, you wouldn't care. Be really
super cute, Yeah it would be awesome. But like the
first time kid milestones. How about this one kid milestones?
Oh my god, my kid walked today. My kids spit
up today. My kid said bob bab mama da da.
Do you know what my kid calls his lovey. He
(01:40:19):
calls it a nubby. It's so cute. Especially when you
have your own kids, you don't really care about other
people's kids. And maybe if you have seen somebody else's kid,
you care a lot because you want to have a kid,
but you don't want to go through the whole thing
of having a kid and having to have a guy
and all that other stuff. I don't really think you
especially by kids accomplishments. And here's a little side one
(01:40:39):
to that. You also don't care about people's animals. I
have a dog, No, no, no, you have a pug.
Your pug is great, right her. Listen, I'm not gonna
sold her because we're not like friends. We're not gonna
hang out because she's a dog, because she doesn't want
to be her friend after what you said, just saying
(01:41:00):
I have a dog. He's awesome. It ms O'Dell Beckham
Junior Jr. That's his name. He's a sheep of doodle.
He's awesome. But you know what I like If you
show somebody on the street a random picture of your dog,
isn't that dog cute? Like you're putting them in a
bad position. They don't really care. There's no real takeaway.
They'll ask to see pictures of my dog. That's because
they like you as a person. They're just they know
(01:41:23):
you're super into the dog, and that's they don't actually
care about the dog. I hate to be the guy
that don't actually they care at you. They want to
be around you. You were the sale, not the dog.
The reason that guys by a part of me. I'm great,
awesome and yes awesome. Okay, here's another one. Um, no
(01:41:43):
one cares about date night with your wife? Oh I care,
you don't. This could just be a male female thing
because you don't care. I do. Okay, then then maybe
this is a guy thing we don't I really don't
want to hear about. And then we had one and
then we went back and then we made out and
then well I'm done. Well I got it. I got
(01:42:04):
it the whole, Like I really don't want to hear
about other guys conquests period, Like you don't really need that.
Not really not really great. But if it is, I
hope you're single and it's something interesting and interesting story
and interesting pickup line. Would you've been married for fifteen years?
It's just not like it's an effort to make it
more interesting. But the actual date night itself, that's not
(01:42:26):
what it's about. You want to know, like what you did?
Did you like? Did you go to a cool restaurant?
Did you go to a cool show? Like? That's fun.
I want to know about it, don't care. I like
if you said to me, I went on date night
with my wife, yes, you'd say, what do you do?
We went to dinner and we talked about our kids.
Where'd you go to dinner? I don't know. That's because
you're polite. You're you're polite, and you're interesting and you're
(01:42:47):
you're interested in my life. Most people are not. I'm
just telling you're not most people. Yeah, okay, here's one
I think you'd agree with. I don't care about anybody
else's fantasy football team. That's really don't care my I
don't care index spikes. Oh man. We was down ten
points and then all of a sudden, I left. I
was watching red zone and I went out and I
went to my came back and the guy that I
(01:43:10):
put in for my running back I never heard of.
But I heard Matthew Berry say, you gotta play this guy,
and I played him and I won. I don't care.
I agree with you on a right. Here's one. Please
don't share with me some story about a round of golf.
Oh yeah, yeah, Well I was on fourteen, you know,
with a swell on fourteen, and then you get the
dog leg left and I hit it. I hit a drive,
(01:43:33):
but it hit a three wood, and I usually hit
my wood, my three wood about two forty yards, but
this time it only went too would be like, I
don't care. But most importantly, I don't care about your bracket.
I care even less about the bracket that you thought
you would have had. But you didn't have the nuts
to pull off, right, You just didn't have Oh oh,
(01:43:53):
I was going to pick I was going to pick
Buffalo to beat Arizona, but I chickened out the last second.
Can that's even worse than hearing about your bracket? Now?
Do I not care about your bracket. But the idea
that you thought you might have wanted to pick an
upset that became an upset is the weakest uh now
is the weakest consecutive sentences in the human language. I
(01:44:17):
mean I, I can't, I can. Only. The only thing
worse than talking about somebody else's bracket that doesn't affect
your livelihood, that doesn't affect your bracket challenge is a
hypothetical bracket that doesn't affect your livelihood and doesn't affect
your bracket challenge. So here's the thing. You can celebrate
your bracket. You can act like you know all these teams,
like you foresaw all these things, and if you win
(01:44:39):
your bracket, that's cool, man, good for you. The odds
are on the house, right, the odds are we're all
screwing this thing up because it's a sport to which
most people now can't even pick out. I cover the sport.
Every year, I have to completely refresh because all the
names change and change jerseys and change schools or go
off to the NBA. You don't know. You don't know,
(01:45:01):
because even I don't know who's gonna win. But if
you win, that's cool. If you lose, that's cool, it's fine,
it's part of the fun to it. But the idea
that I have to invest any amount of my caring
in your bracket, I'm just telling you that if somebody
nods ahead and go ah ha ah ha ah ah
ah ha, they're really saying I don't care about this person.
(01:45:24):
They clearly want me to care more about something I
don't care about than I'm willing to extend. And I've
just wasted the last five minutes of my life and
now I want him back. I like this segment. We
should do it weekly. Things you don't care about, things
you do care about. I like it too. It's really good.
I like it too. There's a difference in wiring in
Mars and Venus. When shopping for car insurance. Consider this.
Gyko has been saving people money on car insurance for
(01:45:45):
over seventy five years. So if you're serious about savings,
it's simple. Go to a guy coo dot com. After
seventy five years, they know how to save you money.
Here's Christine and her dog with the news. This is
the herd Line news. We were going to do that
one day. Is both bringing her dogs. Mine would sit
on my lap. You wouldn't even know. My dog would
(01:46:05):
would totally chill right there on the couch. And everybody
loves it. Looks like a stuffed animal. Everybody would love that,
really because they would care about your dog. They don't
care about dog. My dog is really cute. No, they wouldn't.
They would pretend like they do. But some people are
freaked out by dogs. Apparently, people like they ask if
they can watch my dog for me when I go
out of town. That's because they want to hang out
in your apartment. No, they don't say in my apartment.
(01:46:27):
You think I just let these people will just camp
out in my place. Ultimately, ultimately they get to hang
out your apartment, they get to drop off the dog.
I told me closer to you, you have a you
just have a sunny way about you. Well, I'll take that.
But Jersey has a sunny way about her as well.
So Lebron you know, we knew this wasn't gonna She
doesn't do that, but she does snore. She doesn't, she
(01:46:50):
just snores and she sneezes and it's cute. Um. Well,
Lebron didn't waste much time before he put some stuff
on his Instagram congrat relating himself even further. And my
theory really is he's just trolling us at this point
because I want to be nice and just say, hey,
that was a great dunk. But then you gotta go
and congratulate yourself in the interviews on Instagram wherever else
(01:47:14):
you can and remind us how great you are. Not
one but two posts, yeah, within four minutes of each other.
So he first posted this video on Instagram, if we
can put it up there, there we go, Well this one, Nope,
that's the second one. So this was the second thing
that he posted. It says she's bragging about how cool
(01:47:37):
it is. Then he also posted a video if we
have it on Instagram and the caption says about last night,
well this was okay, I guess. Hashtag Welcome to Season fifteen,
hashtag strive for Greatness, hashtag James Gang, hashtag y'all want
to see a dead body? Hashtag watch you ahead, hashtag
(01:47:59):
bang bang, I'm just staring it um self aggrandizing? Is
um a cat bent on gathering on himself with other
spoils he can amass in the public coffers. There's a
difference between like, Okay, people are gonna argue, this is
something that Joel and Beide would do. Yes, he probably would.
(01:48:22):
He wouldn't post the she'sh one. He would post y'all
want to see a dead body because that's funny. But
he's not saying, welcome to season fifteen. Look at how
awesome I am after fifteen seasons. I'm so great, dude.
Your team's losing, you have guys throwing soup at each
other in the locker room, and you're all injured. So
why are you bragging about a dunk? Well? I do
like the y'all want to see a dead body because
(01:48:43):
that reminds me. That reminds me of one of my
favorite movies as a kid, stand By Me. You've seen
stand by Me? No? But I should this weekend? Is
it good? Stand by Me? Yeah? What's it about? Great movie?
What's it about? I'm not going to tell you. I
appreciate that Colin comes on the show and he gives
away the ending to all the movie. I'm gonna give
away the ending. Um, but it's it's like a story
(01:49:04):
about river Phoenix is in it, who else? And there's
some famous actress's about Uh well, I mean I kind
of gave it away with one of the it's it's
about it's like four five boys and their journey to
go and what they think is see a dead body.
But yeah, I don't want to see this anymore. You're
not just would you just trust me? I got guarantee
(01:49:27):
Rotten tomatoes. It's a very good It's a very good
movie from I think early nineties. Is that about right?
I'm gonna here rotten tomatoes guy too. No, I'm just
saying like it trusts me. I don't know anyone who's
seen stand by Me who says it's a bad movie.
And it's got a great soundtrack as well. Oh I
feel like a song from that movie. But look like look,
I like that y'all want to see a dead body
(01:49:48):
and I don't mind like one post on it, I
am a little bothered by they did lose the game, right.
This is a little bit like Guys made fun of
Devin Booker when he had what's seventy points last year,
but they lost to the Boston Celtics. You know, they
lost the Cellers, Like you had seventy points? Who cares
you lost? That doesn't Yes, you ended ner kitches life,
(01:50:10):
okay you did, but you still lost the game. So
I'm with you two posts. And when you're the King,
aren't there more important things like maybe winning championships than dunk?
Like you should be able to dunk like that. That's
just fifteen years and like, look, he's a pretty special
physical specimen. Okay, fine, I'll give you that. Doc reverse,
(01:50:33):
he's known for a good reference every once in a while.
And the Clippers lost to the Rockets on Thursday, which
I would argue that that probably added some extra ammunition
because he was playing against Chris Paul, and I'm sure
that there's some bad blood there. He wants to beat
Chris Paul. So the Rockets won one O one to
nineties six, and Doc was upset about the difference in
(01:50:53):
free throws. Houston got three and the Clippers only got eight.
So here is Doc on the refs. I don't say
much about officiating, but tonight was let me say this,
They shot right, We shot a team, we doubled them
in the mount points in the pain and it was
twenty four to eight. And free throws. That's a joke.
(01:51:16):
I haven't done that all year. And you know, our
guys played their hearts out, But for them to shoot
that many more free throws than us, and where the
team attack and not shooting threes, it just doesn't make
basketball sense to me. So, um, it is what it is.
We gotta move on. Still, probably get a fine for that,
I would say, wouldn't you? Um? Probably, but I but
(01:51:39):
all of these stated was facts in terms of the
numbers and game plan wise. But I also think this
is a complete joke. This is probably a little fun.
But this this is the problem with NBA officiating is
the rules are so beneficial to teams that play out
in the perimeter. Why would you drive the basketball? Why
would you post up? And until they fick set, You're
(01:52:00):
never going to get the most out of the Joel
and beats out of the Carl Anthony Towns, out of
so many of these big guys. DeAndre and when he
comes to one of the reasons that I don't think
DeAndre Ayton's as valuable as people think is there's no
purpose to have a low post score because it's in
an efficient shot. So I think he's probably right. I'm
not gonna sit here and tell you I watched the game.
I watched some of the highlights of the game. Um,
and he doesn't. He doesn't go to the well of
(01:52:21):
the official stunk often. But I also think part of
the not this year. No, he hasn't. I feel like
he's kind of known for his in the playoffs. They
all complain about Christian. That's that's Christine with the news off. Well,
that's the news, and thanks for stopping by. Birdline. Car
(01:52:42):
shopping can be using with terms like dealer price, list price,
and invoice price. True car shows with other people paid
for the car you wants. You can recognize a good
price when you're ready to buy a new or used car.
Is a true card to enjoy more confident car buying experience. No,
I'm excited to get to the blazing five. Well, I
still had another story. What's the other story? It's okay?
What meaned too, It's okay, what's do you do your
(01:53:02):
blazing five? What show the story? Now? It's really not
that big of a deal. Okay, I didn't like it.
I had another story, but I don't really like it,
So go ahead. I'd rather talk about the other two
things we did for a longer amount of time. I'm
very interested in your blazing five, though. You go ahead.
I'm sorry. Nice things about your dog cut me off.
(01:53:24):
I'll say nice things about your dog. Okay, it's two
nice things, and I'll forgive you. Jersey is the cutest
pug that I've ever seen on set here at Okay, well,
two chains dog trapp you was here, so I that's
a win. Okay, um, And Jersey is a really cool
name for a dog. Thank you. I appreciate that. There
(01:53:44):
you go. We're good. Now, there you go. Colin does
a blazing five in the NFL season. Coming up next,
I'll give my blazing five of the n c A tournament.
That's next. If you think a train will stop if
it sees your car and the tracks, you're right. It
will about a mile after it hits you, So don't
try and beat it because stats show you might lose.
(01:54:05):
Stop trains can Colin does this every week during football season,
so I thought, let's take you to Vegas and do
a blazing five. Let's place it all Collins blazing five.
All right, let's give you five picks. Couple today, couple tomorrow. Uh,
(01:54:31):
let's start with a game that will be played tomorrow. Okay,
Kentucky is a six point favorite over to Tonka Buffalo,
the Bulls that took down Arizona. I know what you're saying.
That's a surprise. Buffalo played out of their minds. They
were fifteen up thirty from three point range. They can't
possibly do that again. You're right, And Kentucky was oh
(01:54:53):
of nine from three point race. Didn't make a three
pointer yesterday at all. But this Buffalo team is real.
Not only they real, but their experience. C. J. Massenburg,
who's their leading score? Junior Nick Perkins, junior, Jeremy Harris Jr.
Wes Clark graduate senior transfer from Missouri Point is one,
All from Detroit Um, All not scared at all, and
(01:55:17):
all are more refined than the young Kentucky Kentucky puppies.
I like Buffalo straight up. And if you're gonna give
me six points, fine, I'll take those two. Give me Buffalo.
Going on to the Sweet sixteen. I got one for tonight.
Bucknell taken on Michigan State Michigan State is a very
popular pick to make it to the Final four by
(01:55:37):
some estimation to win a national championship. I don't love
their back court. I love their front court, but they
might have too many front court players. I've seen buck
Now play in person in the past a couple of years,
have been a dominant team in the Patriot League. Nana
Fouland is their starting center. Good shop locker, but I
think you go inside and nick Ward early. He gets
into foul trouble and becomes a house of cards. Defensively,
(01:55:59):
Bucknell did not farewell against high major opponents out of conference,
and they're not bringing Bruce Moore, who's only a sophomore
but probably their best all around athlete is a Big
ten caliber athlete. He's suspended not making the trip. Give
me Michigan State and the points um seton Hall Kansas
has twelve straight wins. Twelve straight wins. In the round
(01:56:23):
of sixty four, they won that game, but there's not
the round of sixty four. This round of thirty two.
They take on Seton Hall. Granted it's in which at
all okay, but look they've lost games in Oklahoma City,
in Tulsa, UM and even in Omaha in the past,
the NC Tournament with with with Bill self, this is
a matchup game and Seton Hall with cadein Carrington and
(01:56:45):
with all the big guys they have inside Angel Delgado.
If the shoulders okay, they can score in the paint,
they can score twos, they can drive to the basket.
And the way to expose Seton Hall is to pressure
them defensively. And Kansas doesn't have the depth at point
guard to do so. They don't have pressure guards. They
have three point shooters. And I think this is a
(01:57:06):
fallible Kansas team. Let's have seen all team that's had
embarrassing performances in the n S a term before. I
think this is a get right here. They get to
the sweet sixteen, I gotta get into the lead. Eight
give me seen Hall and the four and a half points. Uh.
Let's go to a game tonight in San Diego College
at Charleston taking on Auburn. Actually this is an afternoon game,
(01:57:26):
and I love College to Charleston. Not only were the
best team in their conference, UM in the CIA and
did they go have a ten game winning streak during
the year, but they're taking on an Auburn team that's
fallen on hard times. They lost two starters to the
FBI suspension and lost another one to injury. They're not
nearly what their record and what their regular season SEC
(01:57:46):
championship would tell you. I'll take College to Charleston nine
A hook is a lot. This team has good guards,
and you have to have good guards to withstand the
pressure of Auburn. I'm gonna take College to Charleston to
at least cover this one. And um, all right, I
got one more pick this also in the first round.
Let's go with the Florida State over Missouri. Here here's
(01:58:07):
the logic behind it. Now, Missouri is Missouri is going
to add um uh what Michael Michael Porter Jr. Okay
to go with John te Porter. The Porter boy is
gonna get the chance to play. Michael Porter's playing his
second really a second career game. Didn't play well, didn't
you well, didn't defend well, and Missouri's without their second
(01:58:27):
leading score because the suspension due to a d UI.
Florida State is not great, but they are fully healthy,
fully loaded, and frankly more experienced than Missouri. Give me
Florida State as a point in a half favorite and
there's your blazing five member. Missouri doesn't want to turn
a games since two thousand ten. So Buffalo Buck now
seton Hall College of Charleston. And I want to tell
(01:58:49):
Florida State, Okay, you're watching games this weekend. You're going
stand by me. I'm gonna watch the stand by me,
have a couple of dinners this weekend, and I'm gonna
watch basketball. You know what you should do. Come back
and tell Colin about all the dinners that you had
this weekend. He'll find it fascinating. I know he will.
Many details. I'm Doug Gottler, thats Christine Lay. He have
a great weekend. This is the herd
