Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Boom Up America, Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio, coming to you from the sunny City
of Angels, which will become the recruiting hotbed of the
NBA this summer. We don't need to talk about this summer,
we need do you talk about it right now? Chris
mannicks Yeah, who Sports Fox Sports Radio joins us in

(00:22):
fifteen minutes, trying to find out what is in the
witches potion that uh that Brad Stevens whips up? How
does he he say he was he's a witch. He's
there's some sort of evil spell he puts onto people.
We'll also talk about Dwyane Wade being Dwyane Wade, Brett Brown,
head coach at the seventy six is gonna join us
in one hour. Daniel Cormier d C d C, the

(00:45):
light heavyweight champion of the World in UFC, is going
to join us, also a Fox Sports UFC analyst. We'll
ask him about like, do you do you like that
to you the champ because Bones Jones got the p
E d was you know, was was juicing once again
and that's how you became the light heavyweight champion. Ryan
Leaf will join us. Man. We got Cindy Katz Ryan

(01:07):
music to outstanding producers. Cindy books this show. Great job, Cindy,
thanks so much for for all your hard work. All right,
let's get after it. Um. I love the analogy that
Calherd used and I think it it's it's a really
really accurate one and I'm gonna go a little bit
for a little bit deeper on it. The expression is

(01:28):
new money, right, the expression is new money. Do you
guys know what new money is like? New money? And
Dallas is kind of famous for this for the uh
what's called millionaire? You know, you somehow strike it rich
and you put nice rims on your car or on
your truck, right you you you dressed like something that

(01:48):
you're not. I don't think this is fifty you know
this is the thirty millionaire. I think this is a
classic case of new money and that once when you
first get money in your pocket, you have a desire
to spend it. One to make you feel good too,
for other people to know that you have money, to

(02:12):
know when you have money, because look, the things you
should invest in, for the most part, are appreciating assets
and the things that most of US invest in are
depreciating assets. First time you got a big paycheck. I
remember my my first big paychecks that I got. Yeah,
I did. Actually I bought a house in Oklahoma City

(02:34):
when I came back from playing overseas. But I remember
when I started working in radio and TV that I
got some I not only got a nice car, I
also got some nice rims for that nice car. Right
because rims, rims, rims are a depreciating asset. Rims are
an asset that have zero value. Like nobody goes like, hey,
I'm gonna go sell my rims used they just nobody

(02:57):
does that zero value. And a car in itself is
a depreciating asset. What do you buy? You buy TVs,
you buy cars, you buy rims, You buy sneakers, and
you can tell me, hey man, I just sold my
sneakers on Facebook or on Craigslist. But for the most part,

(03:17):
the second you throw on a pair of sneakers and
you wear them out on Ventura Boulevard, you wear them
down the beach, you wear them to the movies, they
have no value. The second you drive a car off
the lot, it's value starts to plummet. The second you
turn on a TV, the value completely diminishes. And yes,

(03:38):
by the way, I am open box TV guy. I
have no shame in it. I don't really understand that. Right.
Somebody turned it on and turned it off and decided
to take it back, and it's not a refurb I'll
still buy it a hundred fifty two hundred dollars less.
I'm still in as long as I get my warranty.
Aren't you should be? But I like the cowherd. Use

(03:58):
the first class analogy, you guys, ever a flowing big chair.
Big chairs great. Sometimes big chair gets wasted right, like
you're going to Vegas. It's like a thirty five forty
minute fly, Like, whoa, can we keep flying? Can we
just go somewhere else? I'm in the big chair, all right?
You sit down, big chair and you're flying cross country.

(04:19):
And especially this is in puts important, very very important.
If you're gonna fly big chair, you want it from
east to west, not west to east. It's about an
hour and a half longer flight flying east to west, headwinds, headwinds. Right,
but let's say you get on. When I first took
a job, I left mother ship, went to CBS. I

(04:40):
was in southern California. Every weekend I was flying back
and forth. I would get done to a TV show.
I'd get on a red eye, I fly to New York,
I Land, I'd go straight to to work. I take
a shower, have a cup of coffee, and then I
would go to a show. And then I would get
on a plane and fly back. And my reward was
big chair. Right. But the mistake you make when you're

(05:02):
a big chairs you sit down, You're like, man like, sir,
can we get you anything like wow? Free drinks, like
open bar, get you up? I don't even like I
definitely don't like airplane champagne or airplane wine. But you
know what, sure, I'll knock it down with a beer.
But part if you want to get some value out

(05:22):
of the flight, you gotta stay awake. I gotta pace
yourself because you get a little appetif. Then you get
a meal, Then you get desserts some airlines American ice
cream or warm cookies. Man, plus, you get one of
those personal like apartments where you can watch any movie
you want. But the rookie, the rookie sits down, the

(05:44):
first time flyer who just kind of gets bumped up
who's just fat girl the problem? Happy to be there? Right?
The New Money sits down was like drink drink, drink, drink, drink.
I wake up, I'm hungover and I didn't get to eat.
I didn't get any ice cream. I didn't watch any movies.

(06:06):
I felt like that with the seventies six ers yesterday.
Not granted the seventies six they won their first game.
Trust the process, blow out the heat, you know, in
the in the fourth quarter. But um, you're taking on
Dwyane Wade. Who is there's a Toby Key song. I
love ain't as good as it once wasn't as good

(06:29):
once as I ever was. That's Dwyane Wade, right, He's
not gonna do that every day. I'm not gonna do
that every game in a series, but once the series,
or maybe twice a series, Old man Dwyane wadees like, hey,
feeling kind of good tonight. Making a couple of jumpers,
get a couple of steals, read a couple of plays.
I'm in and that New Money, that ability, and we

(06:52):
can shoot all these threes. We can play fast, we
can play loose. We're unbeatable. Even if we don't excuse me,
if we don't have uh Joel Embiid. You can't play
the same way in the postseason you played in the
regular season. I when I think of Game one, results

(07:14):
are a lot like that message you have in your
side view mirror. You know that side view mirror says
objects may be closer than they appear. Teams are closer.
Teams are absolutely closer than they appear. And the Philadelphia
seventy six is even when they cut it to four,

(07:35):
you're getting calls, you're hitting shots, you're feeling good, like
now is the time when you slow down. You get
the ball to Ben Simmons, you get him in a
position to which he can get to the basket to
drive and kick or to finish. Instead you're throwing it
up and just shooting threes like you're like playing the
same way you play when you're down twenty. The Philadelphia said,

(08:01):
it's a the the process, if you will, is not
in the The object or the likelihood is not strong
that you're going to get to the finals, win a championship.
This year. You have to learn. You have to Speaking
of champagne, you have to feel the pain before you
taste the champagne. You gotta understand shots, selection, time, score, value, possession.

(08:25):
You can't like the things you can't do to win
a basketball game, to win a big one, to win
a playoff game, all right. You can't lose on turnovers
they did. You can't give away layups in a half
court set they did. You can't give up offensive rebounds
they did. And you can't shoot untimely challenge shots they did.

(08:49):
Like we could go through the three point shooting numbers.
There's a direct correlation. But basketball is like any sports,
simple game. Win the turnover battle, all right. Just like
you can't give up pick sixes in football, you can't
give up pick sixes in basketball. Steel to a layup.
That's too easy. You fought blood, tooth and nail to

(09:11):
get your buckets. But that's what happens in your new money.
You buy things like rims, cars, TVs. That's what happens
when you fly first class for the first time ever.
You pound a bunch of drinks early, you pass out.
You don't even get to you don't even get to

(09:31):
to talk to any of the interesting people that are
up in first class. Man, you know Stamos is sitting
next to Yet I had no idea I was so drunk.
I had never been in first class before. I was excited.
I had a couple of drinks. I fell asleep and
woke up. There's John Stamos. I want to ask him
so many questions. Why didn't you I fell asleep. By

(09:52):
the way, there's something called Weeday. Do you guys know
what we Day is? Um if you do any sort
of good works in your school, as like a middle schooler.
They have in different parts of the country. I think
it's on Thursday. They have these we Day events. And
my wife just happens to be chaperoning the we Day
event and she's like, oh, hey, look, John Stamos happens

(10:13):
to be there. He's gonna be there. It's like, okay,
got it, No, you're really you're just doing this because
you want a chaperone. My daughter, God understood. I don't
think we have a working list. Stamos would be on
the working list. I'm not sure I could dispute that
at all. New money spends money on things they should

(10:35):
first time in first class, you know, drinks. It takes
too many drinks when you should pace yourself. And the
same thing happens with NBA teams. You get up one
game to nine. You're feeling really good about yourself. Everybody's
talking about the process. Kevin Hart pops up by the way,
that Kevin Hart warm up. I saw a tweet. All

(10:56):
you're ready to check into a game? Dude, that's a
kid's size warm up. There's no question Kevin Hart is
gunned up. He works out down the street from where
we broadcast problem. He's in good shape, but he is tiny.
I've played basketball with Kevin Harden, that NBA All Star
thing which he stole the m v P from me.
Like he's tiny. I want to know what size that

(11:19):
jacket was child's. I'm guessing child size. Guessing child because
I could meet I could t J. McConnell's were about
the same size, a little bit taller than me. Outside
of that, I could wear t J. McConnell's gear. T J.
Mconnell stuffould look like a dress on him. The road

(11:40):
ahead is about to take some unexpected turns. Farmers Insurance
can help you understand your coverage options without practical knowledge
game more than ninety years of experience, we know a
thing or two because we've seen a thing or two.
Finacients Farmers dot Com you realized Dwyane Wade is Derek Jeter. Right.
Like Derek Jeter is not one of the ten greatest
BA Baseball players of all time, Dwyane Wade is not

(12:02):
one of the ten greatest basketball players of all time.
But Derek Jeter hit his hit a home run on
his three thousand hit. Derrek Jeter had five hits in
his last game as a Yankee. He has this ability
to bring it up a level in an important spot
to Dwayne Wade is He's the basketball version of Derek Jeter. Alright.
Chris Mannox joins the show. Up coming next, I'll get

(12:23):

Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio, Chris Mannox is an
NBA inside for Yahoo Sports. He also has a tremendous
show on weekends Sundays with Karen Butler and NBA champion
and former NBA All Star Noon to three Eastern time
falls Dan Buyers Show another good one. So just turn

(14:09):
on Sundays on Fox Sports Radio and you got you
got awesome content. Mannix joins us now on The Doug
Gottlieb Show. Let's start with Dwyane Wade. Um last night
kind of remind me when Dwayne Wade one NBA Championship
before Lebron joined me. He had Shaquille O'Neal. People forget
that Shack was terrible in that series with the exception

(14:30):
of one game, Like this is kind of and I
don't think he's gonna have only one good game in
the series, but this is kind of what like Dwyane Wade,
like once or twice the series, he can dial it
up for you. But that's kind of classic Wade where
he's a little He's always been a very good, maybe
even great player. He's not one of the all time
ten twenty greatest players, but he is. He feels like

(14:51):
one of the clutchest players. Guys. The ability to step
up their game in a big moment when his team
needs it, maybe more so than others. Is that a
fair Uh? Is that a fair embodiment of who Dwyane
Wade is? Yeah? I think that's fair. There are certainly
limitations to his game that that didn't exist years ago,
with the athleticism being the most noteworthy. But you know,
I I thought Philadelphia, you know, showed a complete lack

(15:14):
of respect for Dwayne's mid range game last night. I mean,
you know, they were going well under screams. Um, they
were allowing Wade open space and he's still shown that
you'd give him, you know, three feet he's gonna make
that shot now. He made some incredible shots, particularly in
that fourth quarter. But um, you know I I I
thought Philadelphia gave him way too much room in this one.
And you know, look, if if they're sticking an adjustment

(15:36):
for Game three, if Wade's out there on the floor,
you've got to attack him and you've got to make
him defend. You gotta make him play both ends every
minute he's out there, because you know that's you know,
more of his achilles field this time than than anything offensively. Yeah, No, look,
three point shooting has always been his you know, three
point shooting from distance has always been and occasionally he'll
go crazy and make some but you just kind of,

(15:57):
uh stick with it if you will. Uh. But I
thought that was that was where Philadelphia showed their inexperience.
You know, they they got back in the game shooting quick,
but then they kept shooting quick instead of instead of
isolating the weak defenders, and they played right into the
hands of the heat. Yeah. And I don't know if
if if Embiid was healthy enough to play and the

(16:20):
Sixers tried to steal a game without him, but if
they did, um, that shows to me a pretty incredible
amount of arrogance for a team. It's one nothing. I know,
Miami isn't exactly you know, they're not the most star
studded team right now. And you know, Whiteside and Gragic
didn't play well in Game one. But Miami is a tough,
tough team. They've got a lot of guys that play

(16:40):
physical and are relentless, especially on the defensive end of
the floor. Um, if it turns out that that m
B could have gone and you know, the way I'm
being went to social media, you kind of have to wonder, um,
then this could turn out to be a series, you know,
sort of breaking mistake for the Sixers. It could. I mean, like,
look in in fairness, Dwayne Wade in a last five
regular season games shot thirty from the floor eleven percent

(17:04):
from three from the line. He hadn't been shooting well,
so there's a reason that they wanted him to shoot.
But you know, you don't you know, you don't tempt
fate with a with a player with the type of
resume of Dwyane Wade and you get burnt. Let's see
if they can you know, steal one back in Miami.
Kind of kind of interesting. Brett Brown is going to
join his Top of the Hour and I almost feel like,

(17:25):
look for Brett Brown. He's had to coach three different ways, right.
He had to coach early in his career with limited talent,
just get guys to play hard even though the team
was better off losing. Then he had to change how
he was how he's coaching this year. And now you
have to change how you're coaching because it's the playoffs
and there's a lot more attention to detail. It's he
has to evolve as a coach as well. Fair yeah, no,

(17:46):
no question. I mean he's learning on the fly as
we speak. I mean, look, I think the one of
the best achievements of Brett Brown's coaching career was keeping
kind of the core guys that were part of that
team during the losing season, is keeping them focused on
on the positive stuff and keeping the you know, whatever
type of of positivity possible momentum going during those those

(18:08):
lean years. I mean, guiding them through that was. I mean,
that's a really underappreciated part of Brett Brown. But he's
he's going up against the coach and Erik Spoelster that
has been there. I mean Eric Spoilster. I mean, you
know this dog. I don't think a lot of other
people though, doo, I don't. I don't think they give
spo enough credit for his coaching ability. Every time I'm
on social media and you say something nice about spo

(18:29):
everybody says, well, he's he coach superstars, and it's it's
it's easy to do with Spoilster has done with Lebron. No,
it's not. I mean, Spoister is an elite coach and
he's great at making adjustments, and you know, Brett Brown's
gonna to adjust as well. Chris Mannox joined us and
being inside of Yeah Who Sports. Listen to him on
Fox Sports Radio Sundays with Karen Butler noon to three
Eastern Time, nine to three. Specific This is the Doug

(18:50):
Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um did you
hear and I don't know, Um if you heard Gregg
Popovich after the game last night was talking about LaMarcus
Aldridge and he goes on and on and on and
talking about l A and how much he's changed and

(19:10):
how much she's evolved. Um, here's the quote. He doesn't
complain about a darn thing. He plays through everything. I
can't imagine being more proud of a player as far
as playing through adversity and being there for his teammates
night after night. Um, there's only two ways you can
take it. One it's hey, last year LaMarcus Aldridge wanted out,
they didn't trade him, and he's bought in. Look how

(19:32):
good he is. Or hey, LaMarcus Aldrid is doing everything
that Kawhi Leonard's not doing. Is it A or is
it B? I think there's there's probably a little bit
of both in there, but but the B part of
it is certainly president and great Papa Fitch doesn't say
anything unintentionally and all throughout this the last few weeks,
whether it's players sounding off about Leonard when when, um,

(19:55):
you know, when you'd ever hear that stuff before, stuff
like Ennoble and Parker some of things that they've said,
or Pop's responses when asked about Leonard. I mean the
phrase his group is now synonymous with Kawhi Leonard at
this point. I mean, these are all not so subtle
message I think is Pop is sending about this situation now.
I just think they've you know, Kauai not being there

(20:17):
Doug that that told me something. I mean, him not
being president, not him not sitting behind the bench. I mean,
this is a guy that has an institutional knowledge of
Kevin Durant that that has defended him for many years
in Oklahoma City and beyond. I would think he'd be
able to add something to this. Now, maybe it wouldn't
be a difference maker for the Spurs in the series,
but him not being there that told me something about

(20:37):
the state of the relationship between Kauai and the Spurs.
There was a report in San Antonio that he's not
gonna be there for games three game score. To me,
this is this has reached the point of no return?
Feels like it? And does that mean l a right? Does?
Does do the Lakers have the assets to trade for him?
I still think it means Boston's first in line. I do.
And I know the celt is gonna call um. You know,

(20:59):
the Celtics have have have always been big game hunting.
And one thing Boston knows is that, you know, it's
great to have all these young assets, but you can't
pay you know, five different players, six different players, all
this money that's gonna come a caller. I mean, Jalen
Brown is gonna get look for a contract first. Tatum
looked right behind him. I think Boston is going to
make a run of Kawhi letter if he's available the summer.
Speaking of Boston, what's in the Witches? Brew of Brad

(21:21):
Stevens Right, there's no rightful reason that without Kyrie, without
Marcus Smart, without Gordon Hayward, they should be winning playoff games,
and yet here they are. What's in the What's in
the witches? Bro? How does it? How does it happen?
You know it's weird, but you know when you talk
to teams that that play Boston, it's just they execute

(21:42):
better than most, they play harder than most. Um, they
play with a lot of confidence and all that is
stuff that's instilled in them by Brad Stevens. I mean,
one reason that Tatum I think is where he is
right now is that at no point this season has
Jayson Tatum looked over his shoulder and thought maybe three
four pound, you know, three and mrs is gonna lead
to him coming out of the game. You know, Stevens

(22:03):
has has shown unflinching faith in him from day one,
and that's made him the player he is today, where
he's confident even if he misses a couple of shots
that he's not gonna get Yanks. Same thing with Jalen Brown.
But from Milwaukee's perspective, you've got to be a little embarrassed.
I mean, Boston is rowing like Chevy o'sle out there
for your five minutes, and you've got a team of

(22:23):
of Janice, of Jabari Parker, Eric Bledson was terrible in
Game one. I mean, you know these guys that the
talent gap right now between Boston Milwaukee is significant in
favor of Milwaukee. Boston just out executing them and they're
playing harder than the Bucks. Agree with you, crazy? Um,
all right, how big a trouble with the Calves in
They're They're in huge trouble. And I forget if we've

(22:44):
talked about this, Doug, but I know I've talked to
Colin about this, and I've talked to anybody that listen
about this really since mid November. The Calves are bad.
They're just a bad defensive team and that's not gonna
get better. This Pacer team simplistic doesn't really describe their offense. Mean,
it's it's Victor Oladipo going downhill and stopping him a dime.
It's not like this is some kind of Popovician or

(23:06):
Stevens like offensive philosophy that Nate McMillan's rolling with there.
It's a very one dimensional offense and they got just
cooked for thirty three points in the first quarter of
that game. And if their offense isn't gonna show up
the look, I have more confidence their offense is going
to show up in game two. But defensively, you have
to know going into every game that you're gonna have
to score hundred five ten points to win every single mite,

(23:30):
and I just don't believe that defensive they can get stops.
This is what the Calves have been since day one.
This is what they're going to be throughout the playoffs. Okay,
so you think that you said throughout the playoffs they're
in big trouble. Do they make it out of this
series alive? I think yes. I think they win Game two.
I think they make it out of the series. I
think they get beat pretty badly by Toronto in the conference.

(23:51):
It would be fascinat maybe a nightmare for for the
folks that own the TV rights to that for Toronto
as opposed to anybody else. Um, all right, let's let's
let's go to the West. Paul George plays out of
his absolute mind, out of his mind, and they beat
the Jazz. Everybody loves the Jazz defense. Everybody loves with
Quinn Steinders done with his team. But there is a

(24:11):
there is a talent gap there, especially experienced talent gap.
Give me your thoughts on Thunder Jazz, now that we've
seen them on the same floor one time. Well with
with the caveat of If Donovan Mitchell is hobbled, you
know it's over for the of the Jazz looks like
he's gonna play. But if he's out there on one leg, uh,
they're done. There are things that that the Jazz can
clean up. I mean, look, there's Paul George was superhuman.

(24:33):
You have to kind of assume he's not gonna make
what eight three pointers in this next game. Maybe cools
up a little bit. And if you can tighten up
that defense for Utah, you've gotta feel confident because you
were in that game in the second half despite the
fact that the stars for for Oklahoma City kind of
showed up. Two areas they've got a you know, really
fixed that they've been good at all season. One of
the second chance points they were destroyed. It was nineteen

(24:55):
tenant thinking second chance points and they were outrebounded by
the Thunders. They can't allow oklhom A City Salt rebound them,
not when they're throwing two bigs out there in favors
and Gobert on a consistent basis. But just like for Cleveland, um,
I think for for Utah, this is kind of high
newon for them. In Game two, they've got to win
or they're done. What Why couldn't Karl Anthony Towns get

(25:16):
the basketball. Do they not like him? Does he not
demand the ball like? I mean, the numbers are insane
and he should be able to score against their defense?
What's going on with the Timberwolves and cat they should
I don't know. I mean I thought early he looked
a little bit tentative, which you kind of understand. I mean,
look at the first playoff game for for this guy,

(25:37):
and you have to there's no there's nothing you can
you can do to teach what that atmosphere is gonna
be like and how that's gonna feel, especially going up
against the number one seed. But two of the things
you said are are are dead on. I mean, he's
got to demand the ball, insist on and tip. It's
gotta find him. Jimmy Butler is gonna be the guy
that's the ball in his hand in the fourth quarter
making plays. But you know, for most of it, it's
gotta be Karl Anthony Towns in the post forcing the issue,

(25:59):
getting to a free throw line. He's got to come
out with an entirely different mindset and game too. Um.
I'm wondering though, if for Houston, if they're pushed a
little in this series, I think they'll be pushed some.
I think the thunder gonna win that series. And then
I look at Golden State and I think they're gonna
If Quite doesn't play, they're gonna They're gonna coast. They're

(26:20):
gonna coast, and um, I feel like it might not
be twelve games to get to the finals or this
in this case, will be eight games to get to
the Western Conference finals. I do think they have an
easier road. Am I crazy? Well? You know, I think
if if Luke mobam mute can't play in that second round,
and that would be a pretty impressive recovery from a

(26:41):
separated shoulder. If he's able to play in that second round,
Oklahoma City is gonna give them some problems because, you know,
I think the matchups, you know, with with Paul George
going up against whomever. I mean, I think that's gonna
be tough for for Houston. You know, Westbrook is always tough.
I think that's gonna be a physical series and a
difficult one. But you know, I I know, question they've
got the more difficult path than what Golden State has,

(27:03):
especially you know, car you can get a full week
week and half arrest before the conference finals. Chris Mannix

What do you got Doug? We have got a triple
header of the NBA Playoffs tonight. Wizards and Raptors will
start things off at seven o'clock eastern tom Toronto. Up

(27:48):
one on that series you talked a little bucks Celtics
Chris Mannox. They'll ship off at eight eastern tonight. All
the Pelicans and Plazers go out at ten thirty eastern
time tonight in Portland for the third street season. Warriors
guards Steph Curry is the most popular jersey in the NBA.
These sales totals were generated from the league's online store.
Lebron James and the Calves came in second, with the
Warriors Kevin Durant in third. In Major League Baseball, Blue

(28:10):
Jayson Royals playing game one of a double header after
last night's game was postponed because of a hole in
the roof at Rogers Center, and Jervis Solarte a two
run shot for the Jays. They're up on Kansas City
to one. I gotta ask a question here. Okay, this
is this is a an answer. Okay, So look, they
don't play baseball in huge rainstorms, but they do play

(28:31):
when it's sprinkling outside, right, They do play when it's
there's a little bit of rain. Yes, So it wasn't
like it's not like basketball where there's a drip on
the floor and dudes can slip and and hurt themselves.
There were a couple of leagues in the roof. Why
couldn't they play through at Roger Center. It's a good question,
and I don't I don't have an answer. Maybe the

(28:53):
maybe the unevenness of the surface. If there was a
you know, a slippery spot in you know, in follow territory,
so that could be an issue. I don't know. Maybe
maybe they if you're trying to catch a foul ball
and water is dripping on your face. I don't know,
and that's okay. But I'm like, you can play a
regular game in that, Yeah he could. Yeah, I'm not sure.

(29:13):
I maybe it's safe. Maybe they were worried that some structure,
a piece of structure would come from the roof as well.
Maybe with all the water, you know, remember the tile
fell at the Kingdom, remember like I do, I do
know the tile falling at the Kingdom. Maybe they were,
you know, worried that if like the moisture, you know,
on the roof, there would be that's a real there's
a little little bit drip drip. I'm just all right.

(29:37):
I'm sorry, I know I interrupted. I just I'm watching
this game and that's all I could think about. The Uh.
I don't even know where I was, to be honest,
you were you just got down with Toronto. Oh, I
know what I was gonna I know what I was
gonna tell you about. I'll let Carson wants to tell you.
I'm feeling good with our Matt and just trying to
stay the course. But like I said in the late
last season, I mean, it's such a fluid process. It's
so hard to put a time frame and a timetable

(29:58):
on these things. I wish I knew as well it
Things are going well and I'm I'm happy with where
I'm at. Legals quarterback coming back from those torn ligaments
in his knee, still says the goal, though, is to
start Week one of the regular season. That's gonna have goals.
By the way, here's a goal. Never end a sentence
in a preposition. I'm good with where I currently am,

(30:18):
not where I'm at. Were you were you at? Where
am I at? Uh? John McCloud was my first college
coach and the other dame. Where you are is basketball?
Where you need to go is English class. Never end
a sentence in a preposition. If that's stand Buyer Doug

Find ajet farmers dot com are farmers um? Look? I
hate to go Godfather on you. But I'm gonna have
to go god for Father on you. It's business. It

(31:04):
wasn't personal. It's not personal. It's strictly business. Six year business.
The the Green Bay Packers whacked Jordy Nelson, so they did,
and Aaron Rodgers took it personally. As humans, we have
personal connections people, and and obviously, you know, he was
one of my closest friends in the locker room for
a number of years and played together for a long
time and talked about, you know, really finishing his career

(31:26):
here and together and making the most of the opportunities.
And that's the disappointment when you get close to your
teammates and and they're you're not here anymore, and especially
when they're not here and they're playing somewhere else. But again,
the organizations making decisions that they feel like we're in
the best interests of our team, and you gotta trust
the process. Oh, trust the process now now, but it's

(31:48):
going to the Eagles. I've I've been told that somebody
else actually owns the somebody else owned because I was like, so,
I didn't say I'm hanky trademark that thing. Um, I
think it's uh um, Marcus Labansi or whatever he's from
the profit on CNBC. I believe he may actually own

(32:09):
the trademark to that, regardless of which everyone's using the process.
And this goes back on Aaron Rodgers last week saying,
you know, players play coaches, coach owners own. These are
all long standing traditions in the National Football League, long
standing traditions. Let me defend the Green Bay Packers on

(32:31):
two fronts of this. Could they have or should they
have offered up Jordy Nelson the possibility of playing at
a pauper sum I love I love the Pauper I
love that you. Did you ever read The Prince and
the Pauper Ramos? Yes, I mean I know about it.
I don't know if I read the entire thing. Yeah,

(32:51):
that was one of those ones you're supposed to read
in school. You're like, uh, cliff notes, cliff notes, The
Prince and the Popper its Mark Twain. Anyway, they could
have offered him the possibility of playing a pop or
something like. Hey, because because the reports are much like
much like des Bryant, unlike des Bryant, they released him early, right,
they didn't drag this thing on so he could have

(33:13):
played for anybody. He's now playing for the Oakland Raiders.
By the way, Jordy Nelson is a terrible fit for
the Oakland Raiders. And then like, I think he's a
good fit for Derek Carr. But Jordy Nelson just does
not feel like a raider. Does he feel like a
raider to anybody else? Josh Gordon feels like a raider. Oh,

(33:38):
you're stereotyping raiders. Yeah, damn right, I am absolutely, I am.
Like that's just like, oh, you know, I don't Jordy
Nelson feels like he would be a chief. He's a
Midwestern guy. It's from Kansas. Can't play for kansa city,
Missouri Chiefs, no, nothing, but he felt like a Green

(34:01):
Bay Packer. Um, but I let me give the Green
Bay Packers a little bit of credit here, Okay, they
Ted Thompson, who got who got kicked upstairs? Who got
kicked up stairs? Is replaced by a young general manager, right,

(34:25):
and um when he gets let me bring in Dan
Buyer here, because I have no idea how to pronounce
Brian Brian, Well, how do you say his last name?
Because then tight, how do you say his last name?
Because then tight how do you say, I'm just kidding,

(34:45):
I'm sorry, I just okay. Brian Guncus Kuntz was in
the organization. They elevate him. Which here's the here's the
interesting part about the Packers, right, tell me if you
get the um hypocrisy or how it's so Dan, what
were they always criticized for doing? The Packers, I know

(35:05):
you're a seahawk signing as right, always building from within, right,
like they're always a guy guy goes down, We're not
gonna sign a free agent. Will just elevate somebody we
already had practice squad to real squad, correct, which is
what they did with Brian Kunnicasus becausen't tight right there
that he was, he was already there. So they elevate
a guy from within to be the guy who reaches

(35:28):
out to the outside the organization to bring in players.
Does anybody else see how hypocritical or how well it's
like like a catch twenty two that is anyway, it's business,
it's not personal, it's not personal. It's strictly business. I
understand that Aaron Rodgers like, yo, that's my guy, that's

(35:49):
my best friend. Like we were we were going to
ride off into the sunset together. He's my boy. The
problem with bringing him back is this, if he becomes
your third best wide receiver, you're gonna get a ton
out of him, even at a popper sum But third
fourth wide receivers also sometimes play on special teams. You're

(36:11):
not doing that with Jordie Dilson. Additionally, you get the
third down and you're gonna look for your best friend,
even if he's not your best player. And see you
take that off, and maybe they think, hey, he'll look
for Davante Adams more. He'll look for guys that are
you know, we just got him a tight end who,
when right, is a Pro Bowl caliber pass catcher. We

(36:35):
want him to look for who's ever open, not for
who he has a relationship with. I understand there's a
human element to sports. It's a place of work. But
Aaron Rodgers can't pick his wide receivers just like I
can't pick other hosts on other shows. It's not my job.
It's a business, not personal. Trust process and trust the

(36:56):
process hashtags crist process, maybe all have maybe all trade
markets and nobody else seems to be able to who's
the most popular player in Major League baseball. Right now,
I'll tell you what coming next. Car shopping can be

We'll ask him about Joel Embiid saying you don't want

wanted to talk about today and Daniel Cormier both will

game today is rank them, Judge, Rank them, that's what

(38:07):
we are doing, bringing the gavel in. Doug Let's rank
tonight's three NBA Playoff games most watchable, the games you
want to see. You've got Wizards at Raptors, Bucks at Celtics,
Blazers home to the Pelicans. One is the one I
want to see with the most correct Yes, alright, Uh,
that's Wizards Raptors. I think I'm not completely sold on

(38:27):
these Raps. I do think that the Wizards are better
than their record. I know John Wall struggle to make
shots and with the officiating down the stretch, I think
the Wizards are gonna win tonight. That's competitive. Pells Blazers,
that's the second one. Buck Celtics feels like a series
that's gonna be really competitive and probably goes seven games.
Doesn't matter. Both those teams gonna lose in the next round. Well,
the NBA did release their online sales from the NBA

(38:50):
Store and it revealed that the Warriors, Calves, and Sixers
were one to three in terms of team apparel sales. So, Doug,
because nobody owned a Sixers piece of al right ever
before this year ranked the NBA's biggest team brands. Right now,
what's still a brand in the NBA. The top three
brands that you've got in the association, Laker, Celtics, Nikes. Still,

(39:12):
that's what I was curious about, even with the Warriors
success and Lebron and the Calves. Yeah, nobody was a
Warriors fan six years ago. There's like, no, there's no
like like. That's like people like, oh, the lifelong Clipper
fan doesn't exist. Such a joke. Come on, man, you
know what I've heard with the Warriors fans is that
the true fans have been priced out because of their success. Yea,

(39:33):
there's Alti moving to San Francisco across the bay. So
this new fan base is much more fair weather than
the die hards that used to be Warriors fans. That's
all right, they're moving across the bay anyway, they don't
have to say that we priced out and moved moved out.
Dez Bryant is a free agent. Doug rank the top
three potential landing spots for the free agent wide receiver.

(39:53):
I saw the odds. Baltimore is supposedly the favorite. Now, yeah,
you think he'll be happy when Joe Flacco misses him?
Oh man, oh man, Uh, that's probably kind of feels
like a raider, and he kind of feels like, yeah,
I could see that. I would rather have Jordy Nelson.
But because Jordy Nelson be okay with it, I will

(40:14):
go um Ravens one, Texans were four to one, Packers
five to one, Odds, and Redskins I like. I like those.
I would also I would throw the Patriots in there
as well. I'll do Patriots three. They liked. They like
getting guys that, uh that might be slightly over the

(40:34):
hill or devalued elsewhere and get him on the cheap.
So I'll go Ravens one, Pats two, and uh, who
is the other one you had? There? We have Texans, Packers, Saints, Redskins, Bills, Niners,
Red Redskins three because he'll he wants to play in
the division. And finally, Doug, it's so Tani night tonight

(40:55):
at the Big A facing the Red Sox. Three biggest
stars in baseball right now, Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, and uh,
I'll go Aaron Judge, this is game time on the
Dug Gottlieb Show. Bryce Harper hit a four foot home

(41:19):
run on a broken bat. Okay, the ball has changed
in composition it's not just a swing plane has changed
like it was. The World Series was stupid last year
with all the home runs playing in a band box
in Houston. Just stupid. Brett Brown joins us up coming next,
ask him what he's learning from his first playoff coaching experience.

(41:39):
Next in the Doug Gotlip Show. What up Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio, Coming to you from the City of
Angels And Uh, look, I think some of it is
the astros, the astro effect, if you will. Some of
it is the seventies sixers when teams tank, lose a

(42:03):
ton of games for consecutive years and load up with
talented young players and then you see that You see
them in stark contrast to other teams that have just
been competitive over the last four or five years and
they don't have nearly the upside potential for growth. You're like, man,
why don't we do that? It feels like a good idea.

(42:24):
And if you watched the seventies sixers this year, when
fifty regular season games, you're like, there's you know, NBA
owners are like fellas, that's what we want to look
like in four or five years. I mean, think of
the success you have two players top ten in jersey sales.

(42:45):
Up until this year, they hadn't sniffed, let alone one
a playoff game, Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. Now, some
of this is it's like when Lebron changes teams or
changes numbers, right like you gotta go out and get
the new jersey and stop with the Just like a
couple of years ago, when the Cubs finally got good, everybody,

(43:07):
or even when the Cubs got to the World Series,
everbody done in those brand new Cubs hat a lot
of brand new Houston Astros hats. I've been an Astro's
fan my whole life. Really, did you go to the
stadium in two thousand thirteen? Can you need one player
who was on the roster in two thousand thirteen? Of
course you can't. Well, I just those couple of years
that kind of lost track of ups. So you weren't

(43:28):
fan for life. You're a front war front her. That's okay,
we're all front runners. Look, if we lost the Revolutionary War,
I'd be a big fan of the British. Brett Brown
said to join us. Apparently a I was talking some trash,
Although Duane Wade didn't want to mention Ai. After the game,

(43:52):
Kevin Hart was talking trash in his Little Man Kevin
Hart warm up top. It was it look, I'm it's
a It was an old school throwbackies that's what warm
up tops used to look like. That part was cool,
but it was so small. It was tight on Kevin Hart,
which leads me to ask the question, what size was
that jacket? Kids? Medium? Dwyane Wade gave it to him,

(44:18):
gave him the business last night? Do you know who
won Twitter last night? Boys? Do you guys see this?
You know on Twitter? Last night? Music? Do you know
who on Twitter? Was it? Doug gol was not Dug?
It was not Dug goblt No, I have no idea. Um,
you want to take a guest, Sarah Ralis. When you

(44:39):
say one Twitter, Twitter, you mean a person who was
like really doing a lot of good stuff and he's
like just killed it or she did that. What you
mean by killing was one tweet? One Twitter? Oh man,
I have no idea. There's so many people on Twitter
right here's one. Okay, it relates to Dwyane Wade playing

(45:00):
I know who it is, Gabrielle Union wife wife. Yes,
here's the tweet. After the game. Now come home, baby,
I got something for you. Hashtag grown a s F.
She's one Twitter, and if you want to have some fun,
check out the responses. They're unbelievable. There, you're you're gonna

(45:25):
You're like, man, what am I gonna do for the
next hour? I got you. Keep you here the dug
Ott Leave show. Get onto Twitter and just scroll through
the responses and you're like, wow, good, great good. I'm
I'm completely and thoroughly entertained. And there's some stuff which
I had no idea which were jips on Twitter. None

(45:49):
is Brett Brown not calling in because I said they
acted like it was the first time they're in first class.
Winning in the playoffs is hard, and they got great lesson.
I think the big the questions from this point forward
are really interesting, which are do you tell Joe LMB
to shut it down with Instagram? I though Brown handled

(46:10):
it incredibly well, incredibly well. Right this is right after
the game, and I don't if I characterized losing the
game in heartbreaking fashion, that's like you lead the whole gamer,
it's close to the whole way and somebody throws in
the thirty five. I think it was just really it

(46:31):
was disappointing because they're down a bunch. You know, they
had a terrible second quarter. They get they get outscored
thirty four thirteen in the second quarter. They come storming back.
I think they cut it to three. That's got to
cut to four. Excuse me, and Dwyane Wade steps in,

(46:54):
makes a couple of plays and they lose by ten.
So to say so to say they lost in heartbreaking fashion,
that's not accurate. Wasn't a heartbreaker. It was just the
second quarter was disappointing. And then the way in which
you did to wish. They come storing back the places
going bonkers, and you gotta credit Brett Brown because he
called time out. And they played this on TV on

(47:16):
t N t N TV where they like Brett Brown
is like, and I can't do his Boston accent. It
was like, look, we just get three stops in a row.
This place is gonna go nuts. Sarge makes a layup,
he called time out, and it's it's going bonkers, going bonkers.
They trade buckets for a little bit there down now.
It actually cut it to two, I think, and then

(47:38):
Dwyane Wade makes it dunk. James Johnson makes it dunk
on Dwyane Wade assist after Dwyane Wade got a steal
and they start chucking threes and they end up losing
by ten. Brett Brown, head coach of the seventies six,
joins us on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Uh You're down
four called time out just after the previous time out

(47:59):
he had called time out and said, hey, we get
three stops for all the places going crazy. We didn't
get a chance to hear what you said when you
cut it to four and they call it time out,
What do you say? I mean? Just trying to reflect
back on how we were able to come down from
as deep as we were we wanted we went on
a sixteen to run to get it to two, and

(48:20):
just trying to reflect on the things defensively, especially that
allowed us to do that while you know, sort of
nominating targets, different sort of looks you hope to get
to if the game became slow, we we we try
to play fast, but if the game became slow, you
know what look did we want to live in? And

(48:40):
those those types of things. If you could, if you
could go back personally and change one thing, what would
it be I think to play that Dwyane Wade stole
the ball from Dario sarage. Um. I give credit to Dwayne,
you know, he's got that veteran sort of freedom to

(49:01):
break a defensive um. You know system, it's it's a
complete sort of outlier to what they normally do. Uh,
you know, I wish we had that opportunity again. I
felt like if we could have scored on that possession,
things might have been a little bit differently. You know,
you always watch a game and feel like there's a

(49:22):
defining moment and like a mood swing, a single play
that pivots the game. I felt like that was it.
I don't know if I do anything differently with it, Doug,
but I think that, uh, you know, I look back
at that and and and and sort of regret that
situation more than anything. Yeah, but that's not your Like,
I know the play call, right, you're in like a

(49:43):
horn set on the two high posts, and that's on
Ben Simmons, who's you know, whether you want to come
a rookie or redshirt rookie. Like he kind of enters
the ball and starts cutting instead of looking like I
guess you just grab him. Hey, watch out for weight,
he's gonna cheat a play. You know, be sure with
your passes. I mean, is that is that really out
of the adjustment you you're making, you learn those those
those little things that matter in playoff games that guys

(50:05):
are able to get away with in the regular season.
I think where You're going is more true than not.
You know, really we should just be shaken Dwayne Wade's
hand and saying well done. You broke the defensive sort
of scheme. You gambled and you got rewarded. And you know,
I give him credit. Dwyne got Dwayne, you know, read
the thing well. As far as I probably didn't answer

(50:27):
the question, um the way you you you asked you.
As far as regrets go, I don't have many. I
think my point only with the Dwyane Wade situation was
a hell of a play, And I may mean just
sort of holistically, you wish that one didn't happen. All right,
So does that mean Kevin Hart is no longer welcome
at a Philadelphia seventy six because you've done this great
job of you got messages from Barkley Dr j A.

(50:51):
I was at the game right next to Kevin Hart.
Eric snow. You know, you you got video messages of
all the former players and that. But Kevin Hart's over
there talking trash and after the game, Dwyane Wade's like, hey,
thank Kevin Hart. He motivated me. Yeah, you know, he's uh,
he's stilly. He's always welcome. He's uh, he asked you.
I don't off you realize this, Stuy. I've seen him shooting,

(51:12):
but he's a few times and he he's got a
great stroke, like he really still can or shoots the ball.
I'm not too sure as basketball background, but he's stilly,
he's profiled, he can shoot, so we we will welcome
him with those type of qualities. Frett Brown joining US
head coach of the Philadelphia seventies six ers. Um, alright,

(51:36):
so let's get to the m BID thing. I thought
you handled it really well. But did you like when
you're you're up there at the podium and somebody asked
you about an Instagram post, What's what's that like? To
where you're you're looking at the box score, you're answering questions,
You're still I understand how it is. You're You're like
in your mind, you're like a personal DVR, you know,
you're reviewing the game in your head and trying to
answer questions. What's that like to be asked about an

(51:59):
Instagram host from Joel? Well, what had happened is right
before I'm going to the podium, my PR guy, and
it would have been twenty seconds before I walked into
the press conference, the post game stuff. You know, he uh, hey, Doug,
can you hear me? Yeah? You're fine? Yeah, sorry I

(52:22):
thought I lost you. Yeah. He he gave me a
head up. That did Joel embiid had uh you know,
twe did something. He read it to me and then
it was brought up in the press conference in what
I said, I mean, you know, like it was easy
to say. I I genuinely mean it, and so it
was a little bit different. But I had been given
a little bit of a heads up right before I

(52:43):
walked into the room. Okay, so, um, do you tell
does he shut do you shut down his Instagram? Me?
Is there any sort of like repercussion? Because I don't
It doesn't like obviously you want him to play, your
team wantshim to play, but you just kind of trying
to follow the doctor's orders. Um, how do you have
have you handled it? Since I mean that that that's more.

(53:06):
You know, I think an organizational thing that it is
certainly discussed. I feel like with Joel, you know, normally
he does not cross the line like he's out there.
He's certainly at times is is playful with social media.
But this this particular thing, I personally don't read much

(53:28):
into it. And my comments last night were true. It
reflects what I really think and we move on, you know, like,
I don't think it needs to be made that big
of a deal. Bret Brown, head coach of the Philadelphia
seventy six years, I've been in awe of your ability
to get a young player like Ben Simmons to play
as well. He's not a great defensive player yet, but

(53:49):
he was an awful defensive player in college. And you've
gotten him to lock in better than anyone's ever seen
him lock in. Have you done it? I think the
history that I have with his family. I coached his
father a long time ago. I knew his mom and
dad before they were married. You know, I've known Ben Simmons,
his his his whole sort of duration, especially with the

(54:12):
Australian background that he has, and you know, I just
feel like that country kicks hard. That country really just
loves this sport. They compete. His dad was an amazing
defensive player, and we challenge him, you know, like I
really and I appreciate you. Lets me coach him. I
told him, it's gonna be a heck of a lot
easier to impact the game for you defensively, uh, your

(54:37):
first year in the NBA than it is offensively. I
think some of that I was wrong. I thought I
was going to be more right than maybe I have been.
But the defensive side of the ball is what interests
me the most. I think it's part of this culture,
certainly part of his DNA with his the way that
his dad played. And I used all that, like, I
really challenge him and use all that. I appreciate the

(55:00):
fact that you're signaling when changing lanes. That that is
in addition to joining us on bluetooth, Brett Brown joining
us on the Doug Gallashi and the left hand turner
right hand turn, I assume left right, you know, always
say that's a that's a form of player anticipation. You
are correct, that is a left hand turn. Okay, So
I kind of think in a crazy way, Chris Mannox
joined us earlier, and he said, like, look, I think

(55:22):
they tried to steal a steal a game, you knowing
and be could come back, but try to get up
to oh restom as much as possible. But I kind
of think it was better. You never want to lose,
but it's better that you lost a game early like
that so that your team doesn't get full of themselves.
They are still with exception of Yasova or Marco Bell
and only some of the veterans and JJ, you kind

(55:45):
of got leveled off a little bit. Can can last
night be something to build upon that actually helps you?
I think I think it can be, Dug. I don't
feel for the reason you said, but I do think
that I feel like the lights that we have lived
here in Philadelphia. We we we led by me. We
have never gotten ahead of ourselves. We're just sort of

(56:05):
grateful to you know, all be fighting to to to
continue to win. We hadn't lost since UH marched their
teenth I believe it was and we all like walked
into the gym's thinking that our season could end tomorrow,
and we that sort of just respect to how we
did our jobs. That is true, that's not coach speak.

(56:25):
I feel like to your point of now, can it
make us better? Most definitely. You know, Miami came in.
They responded to a loss in a way that we
we we talked about. There's a there's a difference between
talking about it and for now the play is feeling it.
It was a physicality, there was a high level of intensity.
You know, we got bent over, we get stood up there. Really,

(56:48):
I thought did a great job of pressuring the ball.
I think from that perspective we can learn. Um, but
it is it's uh, you know, it's a fist fight,
as we both know, and we we looked forward to
going to Miami. Well, look, obviously everybody has been impressed
with the run. Has been a long time since. Everyone
loses at some point. Um, even the Warriors lost one

(57:10):
game in the playoffs last year. Safe travels to Miami.
Look forward to catching help with you soon and uh,
continued success and health to you. Brett. Yeah, now thanks
for having me dog take him out alright, Brett Brown,
who joins us fresh off a left hand turn signal
with a seatbelt on using bluetooth. So anybody who's thinking
that he's not a safe driver, I think otherwise the

(57:30):
road ahead is bound to take some unexpected terms. Farmers

Tomorrow Night. UFC Lightweight heavy eight champion Daniel Cormier catch
him all season long as he coaches the Ultimate Fighter
Undefeated Premiers. That's tomorrow AB eighteen, Fox Sports One. D

(58:39):
C will challenge opposing h t U t UF coach
Steve Ameos. Of course, he's gonna fight for the heavyweight
title UFC two on July seven. So we haven't seen
d C in the octagon since UFC T twenty. That
was a couple months ago in January. Of course, remember
in September September um he got his belt back because

(59:03):
the A and the B sample for John Jones tested
positive for steroids, and so a fight that he lost
on a kick to the head end up end up
being nullified anyway. Daniel Cormier huh, Daniel Cormier joints us
on the Doug Gallas Show. D See, how are you?
What's up? Doug? How you doing? Brother good Man? Hey? Um,

(59:27):
I got a bunch of stuff I want to get to.
I want to start. Oh wait, you're at the Olympics. Okay,
Um when did you decide, Hey, I want to become
a mixed martial arts I want to try this thing.
So the year after the Olympics in two thousand nine,
in the summer, I'm just hanging on stillwater right now.
I go to this high school rest and practice store
to high school and I was like, man, I really

(59:50):
need to do something. So I called the Wayne Zincin
as my manager. Now he had called me right after
graduating no One and told me when I was done,
give him a call. So I called him and he
sinels day to see the gym. I came on st
the gym and then started to fight. Well, but there's
more to it, Like how do you how did you
decide like a big s martial art? Like was everybody was? It?

(01:00:10):
Was everyone doing it? Then? Was it a trend then
for wrestlers? Like I I'm you know, I I knew
it existed, but I can't tell you that. Like how
do you go from your in the Olympics too, I'm
hanging out did somebody say hey you should do mm A?
Like how did it take me from take me I
get from A to B to go into the gym
and training with Cane Velasquez and and pitching those guys

(01:00:31):
the American Kickboxing Academy? But how did you get to
the king? Mo was and Mona Wall was another guy
who went to Okoma State and he had started fighting
right around the two thousand Olympics. So when I had
was it still water, still living. I was about to
take a coaching job at Houston, making like forty five
thousand all the year to run the youth wrestler club,

(01:00:52):
and I was really close taking it, but more kept going, no, man,
you should try his fighting, should try his fighting, should
try his fighting. Finally I was like, Okay, I'm gonna
give it a shot. And then I called Dwayne and
I was like, hey, man, I think I'm ready to
try this. M m A. But yeah, it was Mo.
Mo just kept telling me to fight, fight, fight, fight, fight,
fight fight. Finally, when I said, okay, I'm gonna give

(01:01:13):
it a shot, I called the Wayne and the uh
got me out to San Jose where I met those
guys that you named and fell in love with the
fort with the sport. How long did it take you, like,
I know, your first your first fight was until July
of two thou ten, so it's like a year right
you started your No, No, I fought, I fought three

(01:01:33):
weeks after I started. I thought. I got there in
August and I fought at the end of September, I think.
But then I didn't fight again until March because they
were like, you gotta get better. And after I fought
March and I went to then I fought that fight
in July, and they were like, Okay, you're ready now.
You can just fight anybody anytime something presents itself, and
I just kind of goes off to the races. Okay.

(01:01:55):
So um, I'm asking you this because people are talking
about Floyd potentially going into the octagon, and some of
this is just Floyd being Floyd. Yeah, and and look,
he's a great boxer. He's brought up in a boxing
family and he's as good. But that's a that's a
completely different sport. I know you strike in boxing, but
there isn't kicking, there isn't grappling. You can't go to

(01:02:16):
the ground. Even if they did, but you can't go
to the ground. How long would it take, in your opinion,
Floyd Mayweather to where he could be like a legitimate
in the octagon. It would take him a while. But
Floyd does listen to this. Floy is not even going
to attempt to fight, uh A true m M A fight.

(01:02:36):
I read something somewhere that if he does fight Connor,
they're going to eliminate takedowns. They're going to eliminate elbows,
and they're going to eliminate kicks. They said that, and
these and these no knees, no kicks, no elbows, no
take counts. So sifically it will be just a boxing

(01:02:57):
match with smaller gloves. Then what what What's what's the point?
What's the point, That's what I'm saying, Doug. There's like
they're calling them hybrid rules. If they were to fight,
they would be hybrid rules. But it's like if if
you're going to do that, then I still favor Floyd
because they're just boxing with four arms gloves. Um, I

(01:03:22):
guess we'll will people watch that. I guess they will.
I mean, well, and we'll watch it as much as
like I don't want to see it again, We're gonna
see it again because I don't know, because that's that's
what we do, right. We watched the train Wreck, That's
why we watched That's why I watch reality TV When
I know all they're gonna do is yell at each
other's scream, But I still watch it because I know

(01:03:44):
it's gonna be funny while it lasts. And that's what
the fight between those guys are gonna be even the
boxing match. You knew, we all knew that it would
be very difficult for Econo McGregor to fight Floyd Mayweather
in a boxing match, But three and a half million
people bought the pay per view. I know I was
one of them. I had people in my house. It
was like it was like old days when you watch
a Tyson fight, right, except I was I was, I

(01:04:06):
was my dad and I was like, come over, kid,
keep your feet off my furniture. You know I'm anyway
d C. Daniel Cormier joining us on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
I was in Anaheim at the last Jones fight. And
obviously since then, you've recaptured your belt, you've won, you
got the fight with step A coming up, Steps coming up,

(01:04:26):
and of course you have Ultimate Fighter Undefeated, which debuts
tomorrow on FS one. Truth be told, Had that had
that loss held, would you have retired? No? I wasn't
gonna be done. I was just kind of figuring, like
what do I do next? Like how do I make
my way back to another fight with this guy? You
know I've lost to him twice. They don't generally let

(01:04:49):
you fight a guy three times. When you've lost twice.
What do I have to do in order to find
a way to fight him again? Um, and going up
the heavyweight was gonna be one of those options. Okay,
So you you that would you want another piece of him?
Nice to be suspended for what four years? Do you
still want to I don't know when. I don't know
when he's gonna be back, but I mean, yeah, of course, Doug.

(01:05:11):
I'm a competitor, you know, Like I don't think there's
ever been a time where you left a game and
go you said, I never want to play this person
again because he's just you know, I can't beat him
or I can't do better. It motivates you to get
better and do better. If a person, uh, if a
person gets you twice, you know. Yeah, but there is
that father time thing right once you have a four

(01:05:33):
next to your age number, which is you know, creeping
up on you. I just wondered, and and that was
a vicious blow. I know it was a kick to
the head, but that was a vicious blow to which
you're kind of out on your out on your feet,
and as a friend, I don't want to see anything.
I want to see have your faculties you're good on TV.
I want to see that continue, you know what I mean? Yeah,
But once I get that four next to my name, Doug,

(01:05:53):
I'm out. Like I already told everybody, in order plus
to fight again, it has to happen before March twentieth,
two thousand, team, because that's my that's my outdate. If
I haven't fought him before then, and there's nothing that's
going to happen after that day, then I will fight him. Now, Okay,
you're training for UFC two six, but you're also filming

(01:06:14):
this show. What are the challenges in coaching and training
at the same time. You know, it was good. You know,
we went and we filmed the show. We did six
weeks in Vegas, got it all film and um now
that it's going to start to run over the course
of the next felve weeks. But I had just got
off the fight so Steeper and I we went and
coach that show a week after we both fought in Boston.

(01:06:35):
So uh, it was trained when we could train when
you felt like it. But for the most part, just
really help to try to help those those guys. What's
the feeling like of climbing the octagon at a championship fight.
I've always I've always wondered, what's what's that? And like, look,
you've been in the Olympics, you've been the PanAm Games,
you've been the n c A Championships, you've been the

(01:06:57):
World Championships. Give me the difference in energy great wrestling matches,
great m m A fights, and a heavyweight championship fight
in an octagon. It feels like, Doug, it feels like
the roof is going to explode off the building by
time you get in there, because you're in there and

(01:07:18):
it's like a whole bunch of people. Right you walk
to the center, referee gives you a final instruction and
you back up, and then everybody's gone, and it's like, Okay,
here we go. You know, it's just getting real now
now it's time to fight. But it's like you could
feel the energy of the crowd like coming through the octagon.
It's the most tremendous feeling that I've never experienced anything

(01:07:39):
like it. Used all this energy in this building. It's insane. Yeah,
no it is. But for a guy who grew up
on the on wrestling mats, I just I wonder what
the difference that you're you're elevated, and their spotlight on you, like,
can you see people around you when you're are you
simply focused on your opponent? Like what's going on in
your brain when you first because because they check to

(01:08:00):
make sure you have like no guns or knives, right
like checking you, checking you out before you ever get
in there. You're getting the octagon. You're kind of standing there.
They're getting ready. Bruce Buffer is gonna announce you, Like
what what what's going on in your brain? In your ears?
What do you see? What do you here? Like for
the last eight weeks after preparing for this and knowledge
is here, you know, it's like, oh man, it's here.

(01:08:22):
But um you it's up to you, right, you choose
what you see. Like I don't like to look at
people sitting in those first feat down by the out guns.
I don't like to see people. I like to just
kind of look at my coaches and really trying to
stay in the moment, you know, I don't. I don't
want to look at Bruce Some guys actually like they
give Bruce Buffer, like they give him like fist bumps

(01:08:43):
to the acknowledge him, and he's in your face, you know.
But I don't. I don't want to do that. You know,
I'm there for business at that point, and I'm just
trying to say to keep myself centered, to go and
compete to the best of my ability. You also look
sometimes the struggle for you to make weight, obviously light
heavy light heavyweight? Um, when when do you do you?
Do you just get to crush it after you make

(01:09:05):
weight or do you wait till after the fight? I
I eat a lot, but it's all like healthy stuff.
I put on about twenty four pounds after weighins, but
I tried to wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait,
go go back. You put on twenty twenty four pounds
after weighins before the fight? Yeah five, wait wait, I

(01:09:30):
want to make sure. I want to make sure because
because you're cutting it out a little bit, go go back. Okay,
what are you at at weigh ins? And what are
you at fight time? I wait? Two oh five? When
I weigh in on the dot, I never weigh any less.
I never. I can't weigh anymore. But when I step
into the octagon, I'll be about two twenty four. Between

(01:09:51):
two twenty four and two twenty nine, the heaviest I
ever was was one time I went to the octagon,
I was like two or thirty three pounds. You're gonna
be about three bills when you get done, when you quit,
like you're just gonna let me, just gonna let it go.
Like I ain't training, I'm not doing anything. I gotta
do better than that. I mean, I'm gonna want to,
but I gotta try to do a little bit better

(01:10:11):
than that. Man, I can't wait to see it. July seven, obviously,
the show debuts tomorrow tomorrow night on Fox Sports One.
Uh d C is gonna challenge uh steps for the
heavyweight title. UFC two was his July seven in Vegas.
I'll be there, I'll be I won't be close enough

(01:10:32):
to where you wouldn't be looking at me, but I'll
be close enough to where I'll be screaming for you.
And uh I can't wait to see you when at UFCI.
Thank you so much. Don't thank for having congratulation again.
All the success brothers. Great to watch YEA pleasure is
absolutely mine. D C. Daniel Cormier one of the one
of the great guys in any sport, great ambassador to
the sport. And I will tell you this, and I

(01:10:55):
told this last time. It's not only is there nothing
like watching a UFC fight in person. There's somebody you know,
some of you consider a friend and then seeing them
lose is heartbreaking. I mean it is. I don't I'm
a terrible fan. I have no I like the Angels.

(01:11:16):
I'm not gonna sit here and say like people like, oh,
you like the Dogs, like yeah, like Padres like yeah,
Like I like great athletes. I don't like I like
saying great athletes play their sport like I'm not fanboy.
I just can't become that guy. I cheer for people,
not for laundry. I just do. I like. I love Trout.
Trout's the best man. I just love the guy. I've

(01:11:39):
met him, I've watched him. I watch how he is
with people, I watch how he plays. There's an energy
like more than just I grew up down the street
from Anaheim Stadium. Like, I love that guy. And yeah,
I'll where their live every now and again. I like Kertshaw,
you know, I love Petko. I'll go watch the Padres
like I'm not that big. Oh you can't root for one?
I can't, but you know somebody, oh Man watching Daniel

(01:12:05):
Cormy when Jon Bones Jones hit him with that kick
to the head and then he's stumbling around and I
thought I thought Bones was gonna kill him. It is
heartbreaking to watch, Like, no, no, that didn't happen. He
was on steroids. Uh, let's hear this tax season, your

refund goes further at auto Zone. Thanks to the free
Loana Tool program, you can choose from over a hundred
specially tools to help you get the job done right.
So stopping today getting the zone auto Zone. It's kind
of the same feeling I feel like when I get
beat up. Bye bye, Dan Buyer. Other people are like,
stop the fight, stop the fight. Damn Well, we've got

(01:12:50):
some news from how about this the NBA. For the
third straight season, Warriors guard Steph Curious the most popular
jersey in the NBA. How about that Lab James second,
with Kevin Durant third. These were from sales totals that
were generated from the league's online store. Now the Warriors
have tonight off, as do the Calves, but there are
six teams playing in the playoffs. Wizards against the Raptors,

(01:13:12):
seven Eastern Bucks in Celtics eight o'clock Eastern Time, Pelicans
and Blazers ten thirty Eastern Time jas Gar Donovan Mitchell
remains questionable for tomorrow's Game two against Oklahoma City because
of his bruised foot. Did take part in some drills
today at practice, but still a question mark four tomorrow.
Buccaneers picked up the fifth year option on the contract
of quarterback Jameis Winston. Former Jet center Nick Mangolds, didn't

(01:13:35):
play last season, officially retired today, signing a one day
contract with the New York Jets. Good solid up the
middle for the the Green I I think at some
point that it'll be a discussion, but I'm not gonna
fool anybody and say that. I know, if a center

(01:13:56):
is a Hall of Famer, don't you go by Pro
Bowls and All Pro all that that that kind of jazz. Yeah,
I suppose he could. It's a good way to to
justify it or not. And and late in his career
did kind of look like a homeless person with that.
He was a seven time Pro bowl er, two team
for two time first team All Pro like and they
went to here's here's the one, Okay, you do that.

(01:14:18):
And he went to two ANFC Championship games with Mark
Sanchez's quarterback put him in him in that may even
lacks the rules. You know, let him in right now
right the uh one quarterback that could be our player
could be destined for the Hall of Fame. Packers quarterback
Aaron Rodgers. Oh that that's that's great work he did

(01:14:39):
there now A yeah who Sports report says the Packers
quarterback is frustrated with not having a voice in some
of the team's personnel and coaching decisions. Will Rogers today
took to Twitter and linked a quote retweeted Doug of
a Packers article and said, I feel like the title
of this article needs more clickbait. Come on, Packers, make

(01:14:59):
something up or talk to some unnamed sources close to
me or something to beef up the clicks. The Packers article,
of course, took his quotes from his press availability today,
but this seems to be um a direct shot at
the Yahoo Sports story that said that he may be
unhappy in me and that unhappiness may have an effect
on his contract negotiation. Look, I I think he's I

(01:15:21):
think Aaron can be unhappy, but that doesn't mean that
he wants out of Green Bay, right, Like there's a
difference there. It's like if you're Dan you've been married
for over year and over almost almost a year. Right,
it was right after I started working here, and I've
been here about a year almost a year. Like, there's
gonna be things that you're unhappy with? Like, does that
mean you want to divorce? Like, no, I'm just unhappy
about it. Right, You're one year anniversary is a week

(01:15:42):
from today, is it? Yeah? Your first show? I didn't
know that. Yeah, I thought it was. I thought it
was Monday. I you're treating for pizza then next week? Fine,
that's fine. Um. By the way, Frank Kitchen, who is
h auctioneer, a consultant and keynote speaker, apparently listener of

(01:16:06):
the Dug Gotlip Show, no game yesterday because ice falling
off of the building outside of the Rogers Center fan Safety.
Ice damage the roof and put a hole in it. Yeah,
but there wasn't ice falling through a little hole. There's
a little water falling through the whole. It's like water drip.
I don't waste fan safety again, fan safety. Fan safety.

First advice to Lebron James in game number one, Lebron

(01:17:56):
need to realize there is no Kirido. You can't defer
when you don't have a super super mega offensive player
who has proven in the playoffs. Kevin Love, even at
his best, is not Kyrie. That's why I don't like
Lebron having the same attitude he's had in the past.
He needs to be with this team, be more like
Kobe and be more like m J because that attitude

(01:18:19):
to go like he should be going for forty with
the lack okay, go ahead. No, I just I just
I feel like we've been we've been saying that Kyrie
is not there. I understand, but score the point. But
it was the same thing, Cec. That was I was
with you at the next game when you were saying
these same things. And how did they come back against
the Knicks three pointers assisted by Lebron in the Wizards

(01:18:42):
game when they were down seventeen, it was it was
Lebron scores the playoff. Nick the rooms are a little
bit tighter for guys who aren't used to doing it. Yeah. Look,
when they win, he scores twenty nine a game. When
they lose, he scores a game. These are all regular
season stats, So yes, he has to be more aggressive.
But part of it is that in the playoffs people

(01:19:05):
adjust to Lebron James. There's much more adjustment made to
what you're doing in your prep form. And you want
to make Lebron make jump shots, that's it. If you
make him make jump shots and he beats you making
jump shots, there's really nothing you can do. You watch
every series in which he's been challenged before. You gotta

(01:19:25):
make him defend. You gotta make an defend on the basketball.
But this whole idea that he's gonna get the ball,
he's gonna score, it's he does a lot. He has
to take more plays off defensively because he's a little
bit older. Um, he's he's not going to blow blow
blow by you. He does need to use some power
and brute force. And you gotta identify who's who's garden him.

(01:19:51):
Um you look in March when he was at his peak,
he average thirty one points a game. He does have
it in now he slowed substantially in April as he
kind of paced himself, but he also struggled with this
uh finishing around the hoop. The big thing with Lebron
James is going to be yes, does he need to
carry a team? And will he carry a team? I

(01:20:12):
think he absolutely will? But can he can he hide
their defensive deficiencies in his own defensive deficiencies Because if
you've ever if you ever played pick up basketball, have
you ever been the best player on the court. It
is far more tiring to try and score every time
you get it than it is to just try and
set people up and pass every time you get And

(01:20:35):
when you get more tired, you can't. You get more fatigued,
can't pass as much, can't rebound as much, can't play
as good defense. So there's a balance there. What I'd
like to see him go for forty sure, One that's
not really who Lebron is. And two he's got to
do that making jump shots. He did not make a
shot outside of the paint in Game one. This tax season,

you talked to right, carefully you talk to I don't

(01:22:54):
know if you're a big trash talker or not, but
like this is one of those deals to where you
gotta know who you trash talk. Like there's a reason
that NBA guys trash talk certain players and don't trash
talk other guys. Last night reminding me of Michael Jordan's
Here's how My first year, my first professional job playing

(01:23:17):
basketball was in the usb L, which was a real
it's now defunct, really good league in the summer. I
was in the late spring, early summer. I played for
the Oklahoma Storm and played an Enid Oklahoma, and we
had an unbelievable roster. Willie Burton ninth pick of the
NBA Draft was on our team. We had Bubba Wells

(01:23:37):
who led the country and scoring. Um we had Gayalen
Young was the second round pick out of Charlotte un
Ce Charlotte second round pick of the Milwaukee Bucks, and
um Man. We had a lot of we had a
lot of really good players, and we had a guy
out of Louisville who actually had thirty one on Jordan's

(01:24:04):
all right, for the for the I think it was
for the Bullets. I think it was for the Washington Bullets.
And because remember the Wizards were the Bullets. When did
that change? Trying to think when did the Wizards and
the Bullets change? Man, I can't remember. I can't remember

(01:24:26):
what year that was. That had to because it was
before it was before uh Michael Jordan went to play
for him, So it had to be like late nineties.
It's got named le Bradford Smith, and I know the
story occurred in like nine two or so ninety two
or nine three because le Bradford was a first round

(01:24:49):
pick pick of the NBA Draft. He only played two
years with the Bullets, but uh he had thirty one
on Jordan's and they played the Bulls back to back nights.
First night was at the Cap Center in Landover, Maryland.
The second night was in Chicago Stadium. And at the

(01:25:11):
end of the game, they asked, They asked le Bradford
Smith like, dude, you had thirty one on Jordan's and
here's a young guy and and le Bradford l A
as he's known l A was like, yeah, I kind
of gave it to him tonight, kind of gave it
to him night. Huh, Okay. The next night, the next night,

(01:25:36):
Jordan had thirty one on him in the first half. Alright,
Michael Jordan was one of these guys you didn't talk
trash too, because they had a mechanism in his brain
to which you talked trash him like, okay, now I
got something to play for. Some guys you talked trash
to them and they shot down. They started thinking, uh,

(01:25:59):
Lebron James is a guy that that when he's played
the Spurs in the playoffs, they will dare him to
shoot and talk to him about and dare have talked
to him about his jump shot. They will don't talk
to Dwyane Wade because Kevin hart Tide tried talking trash
to Dwyane Wade and he lit them up last night. Um,

(01:26:22):
speaking of the seventies sixers, I thought it was something
fascinating happen. Look, it's really hard to understand how things
change in the playoffs, How one possession matters now one
play called one substitution. Because in the NBA is eighty
two games lose momentum every game, right, every game in

(01:26:44):
the fourth quarter is tied. It sure seems that way.
But when you're down twenty and you come back to
being down too, you make a couple of mistakes. After
the game the Philadelphia sevent lose, Brett Brown had to
go up there to the dais and answer a question
about an Instagram post from Joel Embiid where he talked
about he's tired of being babied. They held him out

(01:27:05):
of the game because he had a broken bone in
his face even though he has a mask. He warmed
up and they wouldn't clear to play. Here's Brett Brown.
You can hear the interview in its entirety you download
our podcast. Here's Brett Brown on Embiad's Instagram post. Normally
he does not cross the line like he's out there.
He's certainly at times is playful with social media with

(01:27:28):
this particular thing, I personally don't read much into it,
and my comments last night were true. It reflects what
I really think and we move on, you know, like,
I don't think it needs to be made that big
of a deal. That's how he handled it. It's not
that big a deal. You gotta understand. It's a bigger
deal nowther In the playoffs, it's all cute and cuddily.

(01:27:49):
When you're tweeting about Rihanna and whether or not she'll
she'll she'll date you. You start talking about team medical
personnel and their decisions to play, you hold you out, like,
come on, but time to grow up. This is the playoffs.
This is when it becomes real and you may have
not may you have may have been angered. You may
have the best look, the best intentions are and he

(01:28:10):
just wants to play basketball. It's great. Doctors just trying
to do your their job. Man, just trying to do
their job. Let's get to Aaron Rodgers. A lot of
discussion over Aaron Rodgers and his level of unhappiness. He
had a tweet that Dan Buyer talked about moments ago.
There's also discussion from a Yahoo article which says that

(01:28:33):
Aaron Rodgers is very unhappy and it could affect his
contract negotiations. Here's Aaron Rodgers wild today. As humans, we
have personal connections people, and obviously you know he was
one of my closest friends, played together for a long
time and talked about finishing his career here and together.
And but again, your organizations making decisions that they feel
like we're in the best interests of our team, and

(01:28:54):
you gotta trust the process. I know my role and
has to play quarterback the best I can, and a
team is going to try and put the right guys
in place, the right coaches in place, the right players
in place, and you just have to trust the process.
This process works, and it has worked for Mike for
a number of years. Obviously, that's why you're still here
in his thirteen season, right. So so like in in context,

(01:29:16):
he's like, look, this has worked, it will work if
you'd cut it up. You're like, it's the process, like
was he's talking about the process in the seventies sixers.
And here's the article from Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports.
Both of those decisions he's talking about Jordy Nelson and
Alex fan Pelt. The quarterback coach who was who's let go?
We're made without him in both situations, he had no

(01:29:37):
influence with the with the front office before anything went down. Again,
the unnamed source continues, I know he's thinking about that
stuff when it comes to the next contract, because he
should have earned a voice by now. In other places
with elite quarterbacks, consideration is given to those guys. I
think Aaron wants to be engaged in some decisions, but

(01:29:59):
it's just out the way it works in Green Bay.
I think that's obviously frustrating and it's going to it's
going to keep coming out. Remember he said it was
an interesting change when Alex van Pelt wasn't retained. Really
without consulting me. There's a close connection in the quarterback

(01:30:19):
and quarterback coach. Michael Jordan didn't want I didn't want
Phil Jackson at first as his coach. It didn't want
Charles Oakley to be traded. Sometimes you have to tweet guys,
sometimes you have to look. Sometimes it doesn't work. None

(01:30:41):
of the work. But we would agree that as close
as they have come to getting to the Super Bowl,
you're I feel like the Green Bay Packers are a
little bit like Merissa Tomay in uh, what's the one
with Mr Tomay and Joe Pesci my cousin Vinny. Remember,

(01:31:07):
she's like, my biological clock is taken here right Aaron Rodgers,
his football clock is ticking. How many years can we
go Aaron Rodgers being the best player in the sport
at the most important position in the sport and not

(01:31:27):
in the Super Bowl. We've tried it the other way.
And and by the way, tell me the quarterbacks that
are consulted, Tom Brady consulted. Now, it doesn't mean that
they're Josh McDaniels wasn't going to be wouldn't be retained though,

(01:31:48):
Josh mc gen's offensivecording, not just the quarterback coach um.
But I look at it, and I mean, how many
years do we have to continue here with with the
Green Bay Packers and them not getting to a Super Bowl,
to which we're like, you know that way didn't work,
Let's try a new way. Doesn't mean I agree with

(01:32:12):
everything they're doing. When you go out and there's the
not playing. The free agent market has has relatively worked
for them, but they've got to have a better defense,
and they changed. They gotta have some different personnel that
gets open, and they changed, they changed personnel, a top

(01:32:36):
the general manager's board, right moved Ted Thompson upstairs. Let
us know which decisions you're supposed to, which decision you're
not supposed to. So I fully understand that every guy
thinks they've earned the right for this say and that's
say and the others say, but that's not generally the

(01:32:57):
way it works. Philip Rivers didn't get decision making power.
And he's been with the Chargers through some bad teams
like let's go through it, like Drew Brees. He's been
benefited from the fact that his head coach is the
play caller. Eli Manning probably got too much say right,
I mean, why did why did they hire Ben McAdoo.

(01:33:18):
What why the hire Ben mcadoof at first to elongate
his career? Why Ben McAdoo take over his head coach
because it seemed to elongate Eli man his career? Why
do you lie? Why do Eli Manning remain and Ben
McAdoo got fired? Probably having something to do with the
I meaning you've a guy too much say? Was it?
Absolute power corrupts? Absolutely? The biggest story in sports is

(01:33:43):
that Tom Brady has pissed at Bill Belichick. He's not
going to o t s because he's mad, probably because
this guy Guerrero has not allowed the facility. Is that
can affect anything. And September one and they start playing football.
Probably not. You know why Tom Brady's under quarterback contract
to be the quarterback of New England Patriots. You're not
gonna try any less hard prep being less hard. He's

(01:34:04):
Tom Brady. He's wired to go out and win. Aaron
Rodgers enough to like it. I think that's maybe the
biggest thing is is this is a problem with raising kids.
His kids, You're they think they're supposed to like every meal.
It's to like every teacher's supposed to like every sport.

(01:34:24):
My son does this. He's had a tough little run
here in baseball where he's like, I wanted to be
fun again. He wants to be fun, but he wants
to hit right. And he he had two lasers to
shortstop his last two at baths. But it's not fun.
I was like, you know, it's fun getting hits. You
know you get hits, you practice more practice, not fun.

(01:34:44):
Guess what the fun is in the getting the hits?
Like the days of running through the tunnel afterwards and
getting cupcakes after every game. Like no, now, now the
fun is getting hit. It's being better. The only you
get better. It's practice, and practice is not fun. I
can make it as fun as possible, It's still not
gonna be fun. Rob Gronkowski like, I want to have fun.

(01:35:05):
You know it's fun. Winning Super Bowls is fun. It's
super super super fun. Hard work is not that much fun.
It's just not I'm hosting a Nash radio show is fun,
you know, It's not fun like staying up watching games,
think about content or by the way, grinding it out.
So many of my friends I know grinding out in

(01:35:25):
small markets, not making much money producing their own stuff,
not having guys geniuses like John Ramos who can make
you sound so good. Trying to get Ramos to raise

I want to get his thoughts of Johnny Manzel trying
to make it back. He's uh, he's linked Benzel to
Baker Mayfield. Want to get get his sense of what
the reaction has been to that, And um, what's the

(01:36:11):
first thing you should do when you get drafted? First
thing you should do? In Jeffer, We'll ask him up
coming next to the Doug Gotlip Show, Doug Gotlip Show,
Fox Sports Radio. Um, Ryan Leaf joins us in the
Doug Gottlief Show number two pick NFL Draft. Obviously uh,
known for a lot of things, but has become m

(01:36:35):
a a spokesman for all things in terms of second
third chances in life and a great understanding for what
it takes to make it and to not make it
in the NFL as a quarterback. And consider my friend
really pleased to have him on. Ryan Leaf joining us.
How are you? Ryan? Good? Dog? Good on? Um? You
know when you say things, it really really resonates with people.

(01:36:58):
Is that What's well? Because because you said, Hey, you
said some stuff about Baker and I'm sure your cell
phone kind of kind of blew up. What's been the
reaction to some of your comments about Baker Mayfield? Well,
I mean I think it's of course, it's taken out
of context a little because it's not a referendum or
a mandate on who he is as a person, because
I hear something similar in him where we could be

(01:37:21):
completely different people. I'm just saying some things resonated with
me and it and and that's used as the headline.
But it makes sense. You know, I've been through this, um,
I was very talented first round draft pick twenty years ago.
In fact, tomorrow will be our twentieth anniversary April eighteen.
So it's it's it's more of a listening um thing

(01:37:45):
I do where I'll hear somebody say something and I'll go, wow,
that sounds like that sounds like me twenty years ago. Now,
of course, in my eyes it's a red flag, and
others it may not be, because at the time when
I spoke like that twenty years ago, it wasn't seen
as red leg It was seen as confident and and
ready to go. The biggest one that came across from
me was, you know, his statement in saying that he

(01:38:08):
wasn't going to change for the NFL, and I don't.
I don't care who you are, good or bad athletic wise,
you you evolve for the NFL, you just you have to.
Otherwise you know, you don't get better and you don't
become who you need to become in that league. And
you just look at the best in the business. And
Tom Brady and and he had to evolve. He had

(01:38:29):
to change from who he was as a quarterback in
college and as a person in college to where he's
at now. Of course, because everybody does. I just I
don't necessarily like the statement, and I think that was
kind of my point. Yeah, um, but let me I'll
give you the can I give you the counter to that,
which is um, which is, don't all young people think

(01:38:49):
that they know everything? Right? Like I look back at
myself and I I know exactly and some I've been
able to do some of what I wanted to do
even in this business. Um, and some some of my
own failings as an athlete were because but it was
because I didn't evolve. I didn't understand what it would
take to make it. And you do, some of these

(01:39:11):
lessons you do have to learn the hard way, not
maybe as hard away as you've had to learn. But
I so, I I understand, I agree with you, but
I would also say that there's probably a lot of
of quote even quarterbacks that think they got this thing set.
Why are they know? I got it? I got it?
I got it? And yet they have no idea what

(01:39:31):
they're in for. No, you have you really have no idea?
What's about to happen? Do you think you do? I
also thought it was gonna be so much easier, right
I it was. I don't want to say it was easy.
In college. I prepared really hard and I worked really hard,
but it it came rather easy. You know that that
last year we were able to kind of do what
we wanted to offensively, and I just maybe I was

(01:39:56):
naive and thinking that it would be that easy. And
then when I struggled where I was always so good at,
which was physical talent, when I struggled with that, dealing
with the Sunday to Sunday things, dealing with the media,
and in my opinion, just because of some of the
things that have happened, the the interaction with the law

(01:40:19):
last summer, um is that just last summer, the antics,
the antics um with the with the Kansas game. I mean,
those things for me, of course, you know, bring brings
the attention of what people are talking about. And that's
I think it's a bigger issue because it came out
of my mouth. You know, I'm new to the business

(01:40:42):
a little bit, you know, I just recently started working
with Fox and with serious ex them, and so I
think when they hear my name associated with it, they
tend to go, well, yeah, that sounds right, but it
doesn't sound right coming from Ryan Ley and and that
makes that makes some sense. And it may take some
time for people to see me in that light now
rather than you know, what they consider as a bust.

(01:41:05):
But I'm uniquely qualified to speak on this because there
aren't many second round you know, second picks in the
draft out there. There's a limited amount. No matter how
my career ended, you know, it does allow me to
be uniquely qualified to speak on this talk a good
or bad. By the way, Ryan Leaf, who joins us,
he's a program ambassador Transcend Recovery Community, also has a

(01:41:28):
new radio show on XM series XM three seventy three
Pack twelve This Morning. That's weekdays, seven to ten am
Pacific time. I'll just tell you this, you are uniquely qualified.
You are going to get people's attention when you say
things and they're just gonna have to learn to deal
with it. I would not change. I mean this on
like friend a friend, whether we're on microphone or standing

(01:41:49):
right next to you. So oftentimes what happens is guy
gets in the media says something, people freak out, overreact,
and now they don't want to say anything right now,
they're they're scared too. No, I think you know, you
just have to smartly contextualize that. Hey, if I say
that that, I feel like there's some of me and Baker.
It doesn't. It's not. It's not the you and the

(01:42:11):
prescription drug problem late in your career. It's the you
and how you deal with people and thinking you knew
everything like you did when you came out of Wazoo.
More than like, don't make the correlation to the necessary
the drug problem as much as as much as the
personality problems which can lead to other issues. Is that
is that a Is that a fair way to put it? Yeah? Yeah, yeah,

(01:42:33):
I agree. I think that you know and I and
I appreciate the the you know, the heads up in
the understanding about this, and I do I believe in
the idea that you know what other people think to
me is none of my business, because you know, this
is a this is a goal, This was a goal
of mine, my my fiancee, and I really thought about
where I wanted to go with my future now that,

(01:42:54):
of course, the career was over and in the struggles
I had were in my rear view mirror, and I
wanted to band on that, and I thought I could
do this well articulated in a way where people would
be interested. And it seems to go that way, and
I I have that feeling, you know, I I speak
about it, it doesn't mean it's going to be true.
It's just it's how I feel. It doesn't mean he's

(01:43:16):
gonna be a poor player. It's just something I saw
on him that was relatable to me, and that's why
I commented on it. And of course to your point,
you know, people, um, people responded to it, and that's okay. Here,
here here's the here's here's a parallel. Right, So I
still want us another day. I still a couple of kids.
Credit cards wrote about it this year was like twenty

(01:43:36):
something years ago, whatever, And I'll still you know, I'll
make a comment about an athlete today or even something
has nothing to do with it, and I'll get something
in regards to credit cards from people like whatever. Those
that there's just a minority of people they're gonna want
to tweak you on stuff to which they're not even
gonna listen to the substance of substantive stuff of what

(01:43:56):
you say, here's what I do want, want want to
ask you. Look the quote back change. The position has
evolved some some of it is we see the football
is changing, but there's always gonna be some similarities. You
look at at at Josh Allen. Okay, here's Josh Allen,
you know, from same area the country you you you
know he's from Wyoming, your Montana kid who goes to

(01:44:18):
to wazoo. Uh. He was. He's very athletic, but he's big,
strong armed, not crazy accurate. Some of it is the
guys he was playing with. Some of it is the
weather he's playing it. Some of it is he's just
not that accurate. How fixable are Josh Allen's flaws when
he gets to the NFL, Well, it depends on you.

(01:44:40):
When he has when he's thrust into action, that's all.
That's always the pointbol And and of course where you go,
you know, the worst possible situation would be for him
to go to Cleveland because he would most likely not
get that opportunity because if they struggle with Tyrod Taylor early,
that fan base is going to be asking for the
first pick in the NFL Draft to be playing. And

(01:45:02):
if he's forced into something where he hasn't been able
to work on his fundamentals and his accuracy and his
technique with his new coach, it could be very detrimental
to your to your confidence. I know it was for
me and um that first game. I threw four interceptions,
two of them got called back on penalties. But just
after that game, sitting down, we had won the football game,
but I was just sitting in the locker room afterwards,

(01:45:23):
going I've never had a game like that. I never
had a time where I threw more than a couple
of interceptions, and these were essentially they had me figured out,
and I just I was dumbfounded in that moment. And
so it makes sense you can lose your confidence, even
being the most confident individual going into the draft. It's
it's a matter of being able to apply what you've learned.

(01:45:46):
See that failure is an opportunity, and when the thing
hits the fan. The fans are on you, the media
is on you, your cities on you. You're able to
respond in kind in a way that makes you the
leader that team. And I just wantn't be able to
respond that way. And that's what I always that's the
most hesitance I have behind Baker Mayfield and Josh Allen.

(01:46:07):
That's why I have them ranked fourth and fifth on
my draft list, just because I don't necessarily know if
they have the ability to see that and whether that
like the other quarterbacks can. Yeah, the one thing about
Baker is remember he's been he's he's unlike others he's
been told no, you know, he was a walk on.
He got beat out of Texas Tech, and then he
had to go to Oklahoma and he's a walk on

(01:46:28):
there and had to earn the starting position. But yeah,
how they handle all of that, all right? The last
thing Ryan Leaf check out his radio show Packed twelve
this morning weekdays seven to ten am. Of course, he's
also an incredible program ambassador of Transcend Recovery Community. They
have those in several parts of the country, including Los
Angeles where he he does most of his work. Um,

(01:46:49):
if you had if any of these guys pick up
a phone and say, Ryan, what's the What should I do?
Day one? Day one, I get drafted. I go to
the facility. What should I do as a quarterback? Well,
you find the you find the ultimate veteran. You find
the guy that's in there who has been able to
make this a career. You go out at two him
and you ask him how did you do it? And

(01:47:10):
then you listen and then you follow his example. That
is that is the best advice I can give you.
And I had the perfect opportunity in San Diego. I
had Junior set Out and I had Rodney Harrison. I
became very close with Rodney. I was very close with
Junior as well, though I didn't utilize them as mentors.
I just I became friends with them, and then they

(01:47:34):
tried to lead the way and I didn't follow. I
didn't use that as an opportunity. I also felt like,
if you know, if I couldn't do this on my own,
it was it was a sign of weakness. But as
we all know, no one makes it to this point
without just the help of so many and that would
have been my That would be my best advice to
those guys. Go find the ten year veteran, the guy

(01:47:55):
that's been on the team forever and asked him how
he did it, and and follow him and continue to
do that awesome stuff. Ryan. Can't say how much I
appreciate you join us. Look forward to listen to your

that's Ryan Leaf. Great dude, man. It's a long long life.

(01:48:21):

Zones Welcome in Dan Buyer. When he got one two,

(01:48:42):
three NBA playoff games tonight a game two in Toronto, Right,
there's something to the Wizards seven o'clock Eastern time, Toronto,
Ue Oh, pick winner? Um? I like the Wizards tonight.
I like the Celtics to beat the Bucks tonight and
go pick pick give me the layout the alright, I
was gonna go pick a winner all right. But the
thing I want to do here Bucks Celtics to ninety

(01:49:04):
eight o'clock Eastern time. As a Bucks fan, I have
no confidence in them, So I'm going with the Celtics.
You Bucks fans hate Pronty, hate the Bucks. Just you
guys hate everything. They just they the the summer. What
is it the some of their parts saying you know,
they're not equal to the some of their parts. Yeah,
their whole is not. They got like a bunch of

(01:49:27):
they got, they got, they got, they got a ten,
and they got a couple of nines and for some
reason it adds up to twenty three to make it ten.
He just doesn't come together. Pelicans and Blazers ten thirty six.
Third time tonight he's aid tenant, she's aid to attend.
Should be a tenant to right. That's that's how it goes.

(01:49:48):
The yachtice is at ten fled so Middleton eight or nine, Jabari,
I don't know, seven or eighty five? You get nineteen
when they played together. It doesn't make any sense. I
don't just okay, who are you taking pills? And Blazers.
I like the Blazers to even things up tonight. They
can't be as cold as they were at the start

(01:50:10):
of game one. Yeah, they got some matchup issues there.
Drew Holiday was pretty amazing. I've always been a big
Drew Holiday guy. And uh defensively, remember he took time
off start the season last year because of his wife
fighting cancer. But their baby is pretty pretty outstanding. Coon
was was pretty darn good. Was Conaton doing in there
at that point in time? Maybe a better I thought

(01:50:33):
even two handed it up to the and it was
still blocked. Jay's on top of the Royals eleven to
three in game one of their double ladder, and Aaron Rodgers,
as you touched on a bit earlier, shooting down the
Yahoo Sports reports say, is that he's frustrated. That said,
he's frustrated out having a voice and some of the
team's personality coaching decisions. Mocking it on Twitter, saying that
a Green Bay Packers dot com article should be should

(01:50:56):
have more click baits and unnamed sources in it. So
a little mocking for Maaron Rodgers on Twitter. I'm looking,
I don't I don't want to mock unnamed sources, okay,
because unnamed sort of like we wouldn't have deep throat
deep throat was an unnamed source. Right, So that's part
of journalism. But let's just say this. I think the
bigger point is it's it's like marriage, right, It's like marriage. Like,

(01:51:19):
I'm sure my there are things I do that drive
my wife crazy. Right, it said, oh God, I hate
when he doesn't you hate? When does that? Do you
want a divorce? No? I just said I hate when
he does that. I'll give you example. We we went
after the show yesterday, but we do have a show. Yeah,
after the show yesterday, we went to Venice Beach. My

(01:51:40):
kids has never been to Venice Beach, and we're like,
it's super weird, but we feel like, all right, we'll
let him. And my son's like, wanted to skateboard in
the at the skate park at Venice Beach. And it
was really really windy in southern California. I know, if
you live in the East Coast, you feel no sympathy
for me because windy and like fifty sixty degrees. You're like,
I would kill for six degrees. But it was uncomfortable
how windy it was. The sand was actually hitting my skin.

(01:52:01):
So we go to eat and we go to a
place called Surf Side and my one of my daughter's
orders wings, right, it's I just be still my heart
that my daughter would order wings and I look up
and she has food all over her face, And of
course my wife says like, hey, looks like your kids,

(01:52:25):
to which I look up and I got food in
my face, and we're both eating like complete pigs, which
I'm sure frustrates the hell out of my wife. Okay,
now I could go into the fact that like, look
full contact eating. It's I believe the eleventh commandment is
it's okay to eat checking with your fingers. You've seen
the tablets that Moses holds. You know that he's missing

(01:52:47):
in a commandment. There's an eleventh commandment. It's okay to
checking with your fingers. And my point is that Aaron Rodgers,
he's he's rightfully upset that Jordy Nelson was released by
the team. And you know what they probably should have
offered Jordy's some sort of deal. Well, will you take
a minimum sort of deal. It's awful because he's a

(01:53:10):
really good player. He has no baggage, he works hard,
and he is Jordi is the type of guy who
you could see moving to becoming a slot guy, or
to accepting a a tertiary role. But whatever decisions were made,
they wanted to Chambers. They want to shake some things up.
It's something that the Packers hadn't done right the Packers.

(01:53:33):
The Packers did the in the NFL. The old adages
it's better release a guy a year too early than
a year too late. But the Packers had done the
opposite there. It's better to Dom Caper, let le him
coach one more year. Aaron Kampman, let's have one more year.
Let's let Aaron Kampton play in the three four, which
he looked awful in. So they want to shake some

(01:53:54):
things up. And this is what shaking things up looks like.
Is Aaron Rogers ticked? I'm sure he was sticked. Is
he so ticked he wants to go play somewhere else?
Probably not? Probably not. Trust the process. Sam Hanky is
very bright man. He should get some credit for what
the seventy sixers did. The fact is that he couldn't

(01:54:15):
get trust the process um trademarked. Not that smart because
everyone is saying trust the process every literally everyone says
that he said it twice, he said he said it,
he said it twice. The road ahead is bound to
take some unexpected turns. Farmers Insurance can help you understand

(01:54:35):
your coverage options with our practical knowledge game for more
than nine years of experience. We know a thing or
two because we've seen a thing or two. Find a
Farmers dot Com was Greg Popovich commending LaMarcus Aldrich or
calling out Kauai Leonard. You decide say what I think next.
Car shopping can be confusing with terms like dealer price,

(01:54:56):
list price, an invoice price. True Car shows what other

you love a bigger tax refund? Tax Layer was highest
rated for maximum refunds. He had more cash spent on
whatether the heck you want to spend it on? Go

(01:55:16):
out and slay at this tax season max refunded tax
Layer dot Com. The Press, it's bringing Dan buyer. Dan.
I want you to get to his here. I'm looking
at the press. Seven seven stories. Let's get tell how
about eight? Let's let's even push for eight Crazy eight.

(01:55:38):
Before we look ahead to tonight's playoff action, let's look
back at last night as the Warriors went up to
oh on the San Antonio Spurs, and maybe what Gregg
Popovich said after last night's game about his player. LaMarcus
Aldrich has been a monster all year long. He's led
our team at both ends of the floor. He doesn't

(01:55:58):
complain about a darn thing out of the court. He
just plays through everything. I can't imagine being uh more
proud of a player as far as playing through adversity
and being there for his teammates night after night after night.
He's been fantastic. I think he's talking about LaMarcus. I
think everyone thinks that he's talking about Kauai. He's talking

(01:56:21):
about Kauai. We have to remember LaMarcus Alders wanted to
be traded at the end of last season. He didn't fit.
He didn't like it. By the way, like LaMarcus Alders,
I think he does a good job. He wasn't exactly
engaged on the bench. He looked, he looked a little
um what's the word acceptance of the fact that they
weren't as good as the Warriors. What's the word I'm

(01:56:42):
looking for reticence. Would that be what's reticent? I thought,
like accepting of like, okay, reticent, Yes, he looked reticent
of the of the final results. Sure, I have no idea.
If that's what reticent means, I hope it does. If
that's what it means, then that's what it means. Otherwise
I've been using it wrong for a Oh yeah, sorry,
I've been using it wrong for a long long time.

(01:57:03):
The Warriors got the win last night. Today we found
out Steph Curry's jersey is the most popular in the
NBA for the third straight season. Lebron James second, Kevin
Durant third in those rankings. Do you see Steph Curry?
Um Clay Thompson shot at three and it was in
the air and he turned, he turned around to celebrate
on the bench. What boy we went in? I don't

(01:57:25):
know why. I love that. I love that Steph Curry,
Mike Trout, Odell Beckham Jr. Although some of that has
been shouting J. J. Watt trying to think who the
who the fifth in the most popular athletes in the
country would be. Maybe maybe Adele does. Even the wickedly

(01:57:52):
talented and Tom Brady the a note on this jersey
while you think of the fifth grounk probably fifth. I've
never understood, Like, I don't get out Tom Brady can
be in the top ten of jersey. It's like, why
don't you already if you're gonna buy a tom Brady
jersey already, Like, oh my god, now I'm at tom Brady.
Anything that's happened last year that's made you a tom

(01:58:14):
Brady fan, I don't get it. I gotta feel the
same thing with Curry. Heck, he's been injured. Why are
somebody's like, man, now's the time, Stevey. I gotta get
that Curry jersey anyway? Um yeah, Janice fourth in Kyrie
Irving fifth running out that top five. TMZ is reporting
Florida State quarterback DeAndre Francois told authorities that it was
his girlfriend's weed. When those authorities rated his apartment last week,

(01:58:39):
cops couldn't prove he was selling the weed despite surveiling
his place for about two months. He was sided for
marijuana possession. So you not only had to have a
fall guy, you gotta have a fall girl. You got
to have a fall girl. Trade bark Chris Chris Carter
n Cowboys operating officer and executive vice president Steven Jones

(01:59:03):
says he didn't understand as Brian's comments about how Dez
wasn't one of the Garrett guys, adding to one or
five point three the fan today, you know, when you
have decided to move on, maybe there's a thought in
your mind that you weren't a particular coaches guy or
organizational guy. But I certainly don't see that on this
football team. End quote m hm hm signing. Maybe you know,

(01:59:25):
taking the company line. I don't think he's I think
I think look that he got throw the ball thrown
to him more than anybody else, more than most anybody
else in the National Football League, and he just didn't
catch it that much. That's what it comes down to.
This is the old I tell this to players all
the time. Does coach play favorites? And damn right he does.

(01:59:46):
You know you know who his favorite guys are? Ones
that keep him employed? Does it? Yes? Yes, Jason Garrett
has favorites and you're not one of them. Why because
other guys catch the ball more often when it's thrown
to them. Who doesn't look like quarterback Brett Farve is
going to be employed by ESPN. The New York Post
says the Hall of Fame quarterback was quote not great

(02:00:09):
end quote during his try out for Monday Night Football
and was told he is no longer under consideration. For
the analyst gig I would be pissed. If I was
a Brett Farve, I'd be I'd be mad. Not that
I tried out. It's saying you're not good at first
of all, no one's good. Very few people are good
when they first try out. They are not. I would
hopefully they've destroyed my tryout tape. I saw a couple

(02:00:33):
of people who one's a current one's a retired player
in the NFL try out at Fox a couple of
weeks ago. I thought they were pretty good at that
they're considering they've never done it, but they weren't good.
But saying a guy is not good at something, or
that he was bad at something that wy don't you
just say he's bad in bed he's like not provable. No,
they did say that to it, and it was him

(02:00:56):
in that photo. Oh boy, um, Eagles come right out
of work. By the way, did anybody vet that, Like, yeah,
we we'd have red five. But there's that photo out there.
Oh yeah, sorry about that. Ditching the uh yeah, the
the Bred five gig for Monday Night football. Let's talking
about another quarterback. Eagles QB Carson Wentz told reporters that

(02:01:18):
it's still his goal to be under center for week
oneen coming back from those torn ligaments. Good to have goals.
My My guess is their goal is to make sure
these healthy for week seventeen, eighteen nineteen, more so than
week one. We're through six, so I'm gonna combine seven
and eight. Indians and Twins start their series in San Juan,
Puerto Rico tonight. Game one of the two games set

(02:01:40):
is on Fox Sports one this evening and show hey
o Tani on the Mount tonight against David Price Angels
and Red Sox. Is the two best teams at baseball
have a showdown at the Big A, doesn't Did you
just say the two best teams in baseball and one
is the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. It just feels
I'm almost breaking out in a rash and I'm an
Angel fan. Bag it out there and pressed that the

(02:02:03):
press some pretty good so cow baseball, right. You got
Doyers taken on the Padres and you've got the Red
Sox taken on the Halos. That's good. Too bad they
didn't stagg at the start times? Is there a staggers
start time? And all this week would be great? Uh,
