Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Boom Up America, Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio, coming to you from the beautiful city
of Los Angeles, California. I hope you're having a great day.
We are one day, what, just one stinking day to
the NFL Draft to find out which of these rumors

(00:23):
that are being spread our guys are flower liars and
which your reality Who the Cleveland Browns take? Right? Depending
on Cleveland. Depending on Cleveland to make a decision that
everyone seems to think makes sense, is like depending on
your your uncle Jim, all right, I don't worry. You
can get on uncle Jim. Like, oh boy, oh boy,

(00:44):
Cleveland's your uncle Jim in Allen and at a rehab
served time, owes a bunch of people money in the
hearts in a good place. What's your uncle Jim? Right?
You wouldn't You wouldn't let your uncle Jim pick up
your kids from school. You don't really know what your
uncle Jim does for work, right, But like, look, he's
family and we love him, and I think this time

(01:06):
he might have his life in order. He's been around
hanging out with the same woman for four or five
years now. Last time I saw him, he appeared cleanly
shaven and to have bathed. He has a car that
hasn't been repossessed in years. Right, Uncle Jim seems to
be on the straight and narrow, but he's still Uncle Jim.

(01:26):
That's the Cleveland Browns, right, Litany of quarterbacks drafted, a
whole bunch of different general managers. Heck, they even tried
the non baseball thing with the Podesto and his group.
Last time they had. You know, last quarterback they selected
early was Johnny Menzel, even though the football guys like, nah,
the owners like, yeah, how that work out for you? Menzel,

(01:48):
Weed and Brady Quinn even last year, Yeah, none of
it seems to work out their Uncle Jim. But you know,
Uncle Jim still family. NFL. The Cleveland Browns will have
a history of great football a long time ago. And
we think this doristy fella, he's a football guy. Last year,

(02:09):
everyone thinks they nailed it drafting up to take Pat Mahomes.
He got a plan, he got a bunch of picks.
It's a quarterback heavy draft. He's got a guy who
can take snaps from center as of now, and Tyrod Taylor,
but depending on the every depending on the Browns to
do something sensible is depending on your uncle Jim to

(02:31):
pay the bills on time, to pick up the kids
from school and make sure that dinner is ready when
everybody gets home. Still, Uncle Jim, if your name's Jim,
substitate whatever name you want in there anyway. Doug Gallant Show,
Fox sportswitio Derman James gonna join US. Star safety at
Florida State Bradley Chubb is gonna join us. He's uh

(02:51):
the number one pass rusher in the NFL drafts. We
had Derwin James best defensive back in this draft. Bradley
Chub make of its. Patrick also will join us, one
of the top cornerbacks in this draft. Plus Chris Mannix
Aaron Torres. Aaron Torres, who covers college hoops for Fox,
could ask him about this committee who no one on
Twitter seems to like what they found out. But you've

(03:12):
got a committee of really decorated people in college athletics, uh,
presenting suggestions to college basketball. And they spend months upon
months upon months, and they here's how we think you
should do it, and of course, like anything, Oh, these
are the dumbest ideas ever because it doesn't agree with
a lot of writer's opinions. Get to that, but I

(03:35):
want to talk some warriors in fifteen minutes. But let's
let's start with this. There's a New York Times story
if you ever wondered, if you ever wondered why Tom
tom Brady did not turn over his phone better when
Tom Brady was being investigated for um deflate gate Man
and he turned his phone over to his attorney and

(03:57):
they smashed it into a thousand pieces. He's like, wow,
that doesn't really why would you do that? How did
you do that? Now you know why? You're like, wait,
did they find his phone? No? No No, there's a New
York Times story that has the full transcript. Somebody recorded
the meetium or the meeting between the players and the

(04:20):
owners in New York last year. Remember the one in
which Bob McNair apparently said, Hey, the inmates can't run
the prison, and people are like, whoa, whoa. He actually
fixed a long used expression. Remember that it was supposed
to be held in secret. It was supposed to not
be recorded. It definitely wasn't supposed to be in the
New York Times, And of course it ends up on

(04:41):
the front page of New York Times, which is why
tom Brady didn't want to turn over any information. It
wasn't whatever he had on the deflator, you know, on
whether or not they deflated the football's that's inconsequential. It's
anything else he has in his life, like he's still
Tom Brady. Tom Brady has texts with Zel that he
did not want out there, that he didn't want somebody,

(05:02):
you know, want somebody the NFL because the NFL, man,
they got holes. Like the NFL is put together. You remember,
Ramos is the only one. Maybe buy Buyer is old
enough as well to remember this. Do you guys remember
the car that you go. There's a time in the
late eighties, I'm gonna say, Honda Civic used to make
the small little hatchback and town took the world by storm,

(05:24):
and so the is the Yugoslavian uh car brand called
the Ugo came over and I mean it was a
leaky ship. It's just like the worst safety record in
the history of automobiles. That's basically what do you remember
that Ramos remember the Ugo? Yes? In fact, I actually
went with my parents to look at the Hugo at
one point to possibly buy it for I think I

(05:46):
was in college maybe at the time. It was like
ninety one. This is a real you really went to
that is correct. My mom and dad took me to
go see one just because it was very cheap, very
small kind of things. Wanted a small car. And I
actually did look at a Hugo that is correct. Did
you test drive? You go? And we didn't test, right,
it was late and I think the place was closed,
so we just kind of looked at them. They were
like inside the inside the floor room. Yes, yes, you

(06:08):
go to here. Here's the analogy to the Ugo. Um
you ever been to You know, you go to restaurant
and they get cleanliness grades, right, they get the health
inspector grades and like everyone is an A and if
it's a B, you stay the hell away. Right, If
they got inspector grades, they would have gotten like a D.
Like whoa, there's rat droppings and everything. That's how the
hell well their cars were made anyway, that's why you've

(06:29):
never heard of a Hugo. Um. That's the NFL ship.
They they there are no they're just absolutely no secrets
kept by the nash Footballing So look, I read through
this today and my my takeaway is that the owners
they just wanted it to all go away. And they
realized and even even owners that have publicly supported the

(06:54):
president point out like, look, this is just don't get
baited into this because he's gonna use this as political fodder.
And some of the owners shot CON's like, look, the
damage is already done by the president. Others are have
Others came out and said like, look, let's just stay
the hell away from this. The owners just wanted the
controversy to go away. That's all they wanted. They just

(07:17):
wanted to get back to football. And again, by recorded
accounts of this conversation, like will supports you and whatever
the heck, However the heck you want to be supported
in making a change in the public. But as far
as taking a knee, like that's got to go away
because it's it's not having the intended effect. There's some
talk of Kaepernick, there's some talk of finding the right voice,

(07:40):
the right leader. I think there's a lot of interesting,
smart conversation, but you know what, there isn't There isn't
a plan from the NFL players. There's the NFL players
bitter that Colin Kaepernick's not on a roster. There's the
NFL players bidder that Donald Trump called them out. There's

(08:00):
the NFL owners saying, look, we want to support you.
We need to have somebody who's African American, but we
need they didn't say it, but we need to have
somebody who's not just the message, but the right messenger.
Not discussed. And one of the reasons Colin Kaepernick wasn't
supported was remember he was wearing the pig cop socks.
Remember he weared we wore uh the castro t shirt.

(08:25):
He had the girlfriend that that that tweeted about one
of the NFL's owners being like Django and change slave owner.
Like what they needed was they needed somebody super super clean,
somebody's successful, and somebody to be the face of whatever
they wanted to do. But you know what, the players
didn't have. They didn't have a plan. And that's the

(08:48):
problem with Kaepernick. That's been the problem with the protest.
That's been problem with the players is they all want
to change something, But all right, what's the first thing
we want to change? Like, I don't know, you know
everybody he wants to change the world. Cool, I wouldn't
change the world. To tell me something that makes sense. Um,
I think the NFL looks bad because everything comes out

(09:09):
of the way that the leaks. I don't I thought
the owners looked kind of fairly reasonable. I look like
businessmen who just simply want to go away. And none
of them are coming out at least there are no
quotes that have any sort of you're wrong for this
sort of protest and you're wrong for your political pleast,
none of that. It was whether they supported Trump or
didn't support Trump. The understanding of the power that he

(09:31):
wields with his little fingers on Twitter and with his statements,
and the fact he is with his office. He's President
United States, and you're playing into his hands if you
continue to make it a political discussion. I hit us
up on Twitter at Gottlieb Show. You can always be

NFL Draft coverage right here on Fox Sports Radio. H
last night the Golden State Warriors, uh cloth is doubt
the San Antonio Spurs. It was not in spectacular fashion.
They did not. I mean, I guess I credit it

(13:08):
Tour Messina. But what's what's fascinting to me about the
Spurs and what they did in both the last two
fourth quarters the end of Game four where they won
and end of Game five where they lost. But did
did come all the way back and cut substantially in
the lead. Is it took him, I don't know, forty

(13:29):
minutes or so forty five minutes to each game to decide, Hey,
maybe we should double team Kevin Durant every time he
gets the ball. Den'tny him the ball when he has it?
Like that that feels like a good strategy. Want to
use the strategy for the entire game, regardless of which
it was not the best moment for the Warriors, they
look great. K D finished with also had five turnovers,

(13:53):
and Clay Thompson probably played the best of any Warrior,
had twenty four points. Draymond Green got a couple put back,
Excellate ended up with a huge stat line seventeen points,
nineteen rebounds, seven assists. So those are the big three.
The the issue is the team was five of twenty
seven from three. Now, anytime a team that shoots a

(14:15):
lot of anybody is five seven three to win. Being
five of twenty seven three, this is kind of remarkable. Really,
is UM should be pointing out the Spurs or seven
for thirties. It wasn't like they were shooting lights out.
Their percentagial was only slightly higher. They made two more
three point shots in the Golden State Warriors, and yet
the Warriors still won by eight points. But the bigger

(14:37):
issue is this Um, you can get away with having
one non shooter. The magic, the secret sauce, if you will,
to the Warriors is at both ends, specifically in defense,
with the exception of Steph Curry. They they have several

(14:58):
guys that can guard almost have any position. Andre Goodala
is shown the ability to guard Lebron James. Kevin Durant
can guard Lebron James, Draymond Green can guard Lebron James,
Clay Tomsky guard Lebron James. So you have four guys.
Sean Livingston when he's in the game, can guard multiple positions.
Kevon Loonique can guard David West. No, not really big guys,

(15:19):
but I want you to mark this down. If they
don't find a way to get if Draymond Green can't
make shots, If he can't make shots, and he's two
of seven again from three, struggled with three all year long.
And Draymond Green only shot thirty from three in the
regular season and he's down to twenty eight point six

(15:41):
percent from three in the postseason. He's not making shots.
The court shrinks substantially. And then you have Andrea Goodala,
who struggled all year making shots as well. So I
look at it, and I'm telling you, you know, playing

(16:02):
five on three on five on offense is really hard
to do. Remember last year when they finally eliminated the Calves.
Andre Goodala essentially acted like their starters. They never played
Jaja and all he did was operating around the rim
and catch, pick and roll and catch. How he was
played like a power forward center type position. But that's

(16:22):
because Draymond Green also can space the floor out. If
they can't get a fourth shot maker, they don't. I don't.
This feels like a copy of a copy of a copy.
You know. It feels they got the band back together.
But this band is not as good as the previous.
The lead singer is maybe better than he's ever been,

(16:45):
the guitarist is lead guitar, and and the drummer is better.
But bass guitar is important, man. Bass guitar is super important.
And I don't know if they're bases can do what
he has done previously. Just keep them honest and make

(17:07):
shots because if you can't, now, all of a sudden,
the defense can load up. And look, there's a lot
of reasons that Kevin Durant was right to go to
Oklahoma City, but the number one reason is Kevin Durant
is virtually unguardable. You know, one on one matchup, he's
seven feet tall with handles. You put a big guy
on him. He's gonna go around you. You put a
guard on him, he can just stop and shoot over you.

(17:30):
But now you put two guys on him, and suddenly
he looks human. He looks human. And when he played
with the Oklahoma City Thunder, when they would have Steven
Steven Adams and Andre Robertson on the floor, even though
you had Russell Westbrook, you had a sergeant Baka, you know,
you had other shooters on the floor. When you have

(17:52):
two non shooters, they can play like a two man
zone and it becomes one on two anytime you're going
one on one, and it's really, really, really are and
it because frustrating. And I would say Kevin Durant was
right to say, look, I like playing with the Thunder,
but I love the space and freedom. That's what they
sold Kevin Durant on, Hey, how many open shots will

(18:13):
you get playing with us? Remember that that was the story.
When he signed with the Golden State Warriors, they pitched
him on, Hey, dude, think of how many open threes
you're gonna get because all of our guys demand attention,
but right now they don't. Draymond shooting the ball terribly, terribly.
Andrea Goodala is not. We think of Andrea Goodala as

(18:36):
the guy who made all those shots two years ago
or three years ago in the NBA Finals. First of all,
three years ago, he's thirty one second of all uh.
Second of all. That was against the Calves team that
didn't have Kevin Loveing, didn't have Kyrie Irving. Now, in
Iguadala's um in the regular season, Iguodala shot percent from

(18:57):
three in the postseason. This year, he's shooting forty one
percent from three. Small sample size, only five games, but
he is shooting twice as many threes per game as
he shot when he was playing in the regular season.
They've increased his minutes, his workload, and he's he's produced
at a higher at a more consistent rate. But it's
a dangerous game that the Warriors are playing depending upon

(19:20):
guys that aren't good shooting, and they don't really have
marksman coming off the bench, like the bench isn't as good,
and their starting unit doesn't appear to have UH. They
don't have the center that they had previously. I'm not
playing Jordan's bell. There's just a lot of things going

(19:40):
on there, a lot of stuff going on there. We
got Utah and Minnesota. Utah taking Oklahoma City tonight, you
got Washington taken on Toronto tonight. That is a series.
And you got Indie Cleveland tonight. Give you my picture
a little bit later on in the show. This tax season,

on the world sports? Yeah, as you mentioned one to three,
four game fives. Tonight the late one Rockets home to
the Timberwolves. Timberwolves point guard Tias Jones and game time
decision because of a sword knee wasn't available in game four,
may not be available tonight four Game five. Will it

(20:23):
be the last for the t Wells this season? Well,
we'll find out. At nine thirty Eastern time. The Commission
i College Basketball is urging the n c Double A
to end the one and done rule and allow undrafted
players to be able to return to college. The Commission
was formed in October following the FBI scandal and was
led by former Secretary of State Kinda Lisa rice now An,
ESPN Reports says that the NBA and Players Association are

(20:43):
focusing on ending the one and done rule by the
twenty twenty NBA draft Byron Munich. Up right now on
Real Madrid one nil in the first leg of their
Champions League semifinal. You can see it right now on
Fox Sports one. In baseball, Halo is going for the
sweep of the Astros, but Houston Lee three nothing in
the fifth Alex Bregman it bases clearing double for Houston

(21:05):
White Socks on top of the Marinders three to two,
and the Padres and Rockies just underway and scoreless at
the end of one, of course, But how about your
and Ryan Music's Angels going for that sweep of the
defending World champions, Doug, I can't figure out if the
Angels are any good. Did you see how many pitches?
How many hunter our pitches? Show he O Tani had yesterday?

(21:26):
Isn't like six? Right? I thought it was eight and
eight and all of Major League Baseball has had ten
so far. Pretty amazing, I mean really amazing, really like
I just like I guys, a absolutely preciation. Now he
didn't pitch well, or I mean, or they hit him
really well, which is kind of what we thought would happen. Um,

(21:48):
so you know, we'll see they're going against Justin Verlander today.
Verlander so far through four and two thirds, five strikeouts,
forty nine pitches, thirty seven strikes, he's coming right at him. Well,
we've been coming absolutely right at them. The road ahead,
we'll take some unexpected turns. Farmers Insurance can help you

play a game, sake. This is game time side on

(22:32):
the Doug Gottlieb, show ye, what's the game today? Fire?
The game today is real news fake news should have
done real news fake news that the Angels would be
in first place at the start of today because they
were after winning those first two games of the series.
All right, let's play real news. Fake news five stories
right now, Doug Scutty, determine if it's real or fake,

(22:52):
real news or fake news, Doug. Even after the season
ended last night in Oakland, Spurs guard Danny Green said,
Kawhi Leonard is still a part of their team. Yeah. Look,
here's the here's the part that gives me hope. If
I'm san Antonio, how the Marcus Alders played last night?
I'm asking you a question. Left. Um, I don't know.

(23:16):
Not too great. He had thirty. I didn't see the game.
I'm sorry, Hey, that was I was, I was, I
just I thought never mind. Um, that's why I didn't answer, Doug. That's,
by the way, is it real news or fake news?
That's what I want to know. Uh, that's a wait.

(23:39):
Wait uh that Danny Green said that that's real. Sorry,
it's my flat. Now that's on me. La. Marcus Alters
had thirty, twelve rebounds, four assists in forty minutes. Right.
Uh now, Look it took him eighteen shots and four
team made free throws in order to get there, but
still he was are the way the most productive player

(24:01):
for the Burst. Remember last year this time, Marcus Aldridge
wanted out and he didn't fit with what they wanted
to do, and they were kind of a mess. And
the idea is all these things can be changed rather
quickly if he buys in. So I do think we
would Danny Green saying it's like, look, we still want
him back. He's still our guy. Um that that doesn't

(24:22):
mean that bygones are bygones, that there's not some bitter feeling,
especially if you're if you're monaging nobly and that was
your last game and Kauai didn't play and he was
a little banged up, or if you're Tony Parker, that
was your last game he didn't play. Uh, but I
do actually believe that to be true. It's not just
lip service. Look what la Marcus Aldis didn't turn around.
There's no reason can happen for Kawhile Leonard. Real news
are fake news. Doug needs to stop asking his crew

(24:45):
questions they don't know the answers to. That's real news.
Spectacular just kidding girls a fake this. Doug Browns are
no longer interested in Sam Donald as the first overall
pick in tomorrow's NFL draft. No longer interested in Sam.
I am that's fake news and specta Mary kay Cave

(25:06):
but a good friend of the show reporting that the
Browns zeroing in on either Josh Allen or Baker Mayfield
with that first overall pick. Mm hm hm hmm. Fascinating
inter Um. I just can't believe Baker. Like listen, I mean,

(25:28):
I feel like I should do this to the top
of the hour. But I'm gonna say this right now.
If Bayfair, if Baker Mayfield goes number one overall, regardless,
and this is a key important point. Okay, a matter
of fact, kill the music for your second romos. We'll
bring back music in a second Doug Otlan Show, Fox
Sports Radio. If Baker Mayfield goes number one overall, it

(25:52):
is the greatest upset, turnaround come back. Um, remark arkable
rise in the history of football. He's from the state
of Texas. It's not like no one saw him. He
was a two time walk on, a three time Heisman

(26:13):
Trophy finalist, a Heisman Trophy winner, he never lost a
true road game while quarterback at Oklahoma, and then would
be the number one pick in the NFL Draft regardless
of whether or not he he This is the old
one hit wonder discussion, right, Like, is it better to
have one hit, um, when most bands don't ever have
a hit at all. And my answer is absolutely it's

(26:35):
better to have a hit than most bands that don't
ever have a hit at all. If Baker may I
feel was the number one pick in the draft, even
if he completely flames out, there is no greater story
in all of football. It's it's much like, Look, I'll
be honest, I did not vote for President Trump. I
did not. Um. I'm not gonna turn this into a

(26:55):
political show, but I will point out, as a good
friend of mine pointed out to me, do you realize
he took down fifteen establishment Republicans and then took down
the Clinton's on his way to winning the most powerful
public office in the world. It's an incredible upset. Whatever

(27:16):
he has done since or however he got it like, look,
that's all part of the discussion, but just in the right,
in the unlikely, in the unlikely, the most unlikely stories
in our lifetime, Baker Mayfield being the number one draft
pick in the National Football League would be the most unlikely.

(27:36):
Let's get back to the game. By the way that
Mary kay Cabot piece, she referenced an interview that you
had with Scott mccluan last October as mcluin also aiding
John Dorsey and making the decision, and she referenced Tom
McCluin during that interview was so high on Baker Mayfield
that that's why Baker Mayfield could be the pick tomorrow nights.

(28:00):
Real man that listens to the show, Real news are
fake news, Doug. Free to wide receiver Dez Bryant turned
down a multi year offer from the Ravens because he
wants to plan a one year deal in ten It
feels like fake news. That's what Edwardner said, as Bryant
reportedly hopes to get a bigger payday after the season.

(28:21):
There's also a report that Brian's not going to sign
with a team today. Instead, we'll wait until after this
weekend's draft to sign with an NFL squad. That's smart,
that's smart. You want to go somewhere, You want to
know what exactly what the opportunity looks like before you
start there. He wants to prove it contract. He wants
to prove it so fascinating. Real news are fake news, Doug.
Former NFL quarterback Michael Vick is now an offensive coordinator

(28:42):
in college football. You are fake news. It is fake news.
Vick is an offensive coordinator for the Atlanta franchise that
will compete in the Alliance of American Football League. He'll
be working under former NFL head coach Brad Childress, who
was going to lead that Atlanta You know, I'm surprised

(29:04):
Chile didn't bring in Brett farm because you know, Brett Fires.
He didn't do well in his first job interview. So
the yes, the Atlanta team, by the way, gonna play
at the home former old home of the Braves, Turner Field,
which is now turned into a football stadium. I believe
for Georgia's state. Yeah. So finally, Doug, real news or
fake news. The Commission on College Basketball is urging the

(29:26):
n c Double A to end the one and done
rule and allow undrafted players to be able to return
to college. This is real news and spectator findings coming
out today from the sixth month of investigation, if you will,
by the panel that is led by Conda Lisa Rice
Um This sorry, John's got them. No, the the committee.

(29:56):
I here's what happens. We looked into linear a fact
and in the media, I've seen a lot of my
fellow basketball brethren like, oh, they look at the one
and done. The one and done is the biggest problem.
Is the biggest problem because it doesn't allow freshmen to unpack.
It just doesn't. You get there and and you're like, well, wait,

(30:18):
what are we talking about? How many kids are we
talking about? All of them? It affects all of them.
And if you don't see that, then you are completely
obtused to the reality of college basketball. It hurts the
top because the best kids, while they're playing are wondering
how was my stock? Should I leave? They pay less
attention to their school work. Additionally, there's the you know, like,

(30:40):
if you're going to allow agents to become involved and
advised kids, there's gonna be the kid who plays really
well for a couple of weeks in a row, and
then the agents like, hey, you hurt. You hurt? I'm fine,
No you hurt? Oh yeah, I'm hurt. I don't want
to play. So you have the I understand that there's
only sixty draft picks, but the kids don't. They don't
understand reality. They just don't. They see Jimmy is gonna

(31:01):
declare one and done, and I'm better than Jimmy. I'm
gonna declare one and done. I kicked Trey Young's ass,
so I should I should declare for the draft. So
the top hundred kids are so all think I'm going.
Then you have the next hundred kids who think there
is good but haven't gotten the opportunity, so they're transferring
because they're mad. Right, It's just it's a complete mess.

(31:27):
And what you want is, hey, look, if you come
to college, your freshman year is gonna be hard. It's
gonna be hard academically, it's gonna be a little different socially,
and it's gonna be hard and basketball. Let's just let
you go and be a kid. If you don't want
to do that, don't do it. It's okay. We And
when I think they're trying to say, is we don't
want to be the ones making you go to college.

(31:48):
The NBA is the ones making you go to college.
They should change that rule. In the meantime, these are
all rules. Is Derwin James next, Jalen Ramsey, I'll ask
him next. Car shopping can be confusing with terms like

(32:18):
dealer price, list price, an invoice price. True car shows
what other people paid for the car you want, so
you can recognize a good price. When you're ready to
buy a new or used car, visit True Car and
they enjoy more confident car buying experience. Mm hmmm. Doug
Gotlip show Fox Sports Radio. He's top safety on the board.

(32:44):
I mean, this dude is crazy, crazy talented. Uh, We're
gonna get Derwin James in a second. He's six three
two red shirts off at at Florida State and USA today.
First team All American in high school. Uh, he was
an All American in college, two time first team All
a c C. I mean, just a complete free show.

(33:07):
Free show did have him inniscal tear going back to
two thousand sixteen. I want to ask him about how
much his knee has been evaluated, what what that's like.
But Um and lit a lot of talk to the
Buccaneers are going to keep him home. Grew up in
the state of Florida in Haines City, and we'll get
We'll get Derwin James on here in a second with us.

(33:29):
But I'm I'm fasting to see because it's interesting. We
do pay so much tension the quarterbacks and look, I
talked about this yesterday. There's a possibility that all these
guys hit numbers tell US numbers tell us that, uh,
they won't all hit. But there is the possibility that

(33:51):
we have a year a run on quarterbacks because everybody
knew Rosen and Donald will be up there. You may
Mayfield has been around long enough and is crazy accurate.
Fifth year guy, a little bit older, super high football,
I Q ready to play. We might have a good
run on quarterbacks. And because these guys have thrown since

(34:12):
you know, passing league in high school. We had what's
his name Palmer on yesterday, Jordan Palmer on yesterday, and
he's like, look when I first met when when I uh,
when I first met Sam Donald he was fifteen years
old in the passing academy. Like, look, they've all guy
named Steve Clarkson, who's a big quarterback coach around kind

(34:33):
of the same area that I live. I grew up
in Orange County, southern California, where Sam Donald grew up
with the Palmer boys grew up. Um, so these guys
have been training for this moment since they're twelve, thirteen, fourteen,
fifteen years old, and then in college now they throw.
There's a chance that quarterbacks are more as much as
offensive linemen are less prepared because they're running these spread

(34:55):
systems in college, quarterbacks should be more prepared. By the way.
This from James Palmer. Another Palmer. How many Palmers are
gonna have today? James Palmer, NFL Network. I'm told the
Broncos have received calls from teams interested in what it
would take to trade up from their number five spot.
John Elway is open to trading. That's not interesting because

(35:16):
I mean it's interesting, but John Elways said, basically, hey,
we're open to train to pick last. Who are the teams?
James stands the reason the Buffalo Bills, right, it would
Buffalo Bills would make sense. Patriots, maybe maybe who else

(35:36):
needs to move up in the draft to get to
that five spot. Some people believe great Bay Packers will
move up to maybe draft Derwin James, Darry Winn, James um,
he's that talented a player. And then you know, in
addition to the quarterbacks, you have, say Kwan Barkley, and

(35:59):
you have to Allen's out. You have to balance out.
You know the value of a quarterback and the value
to the defensive back. Can I get the best overall
guy at that position? Derwin James joins us thanks to
Old Spice new Flake Defense, a two and one Anti
Dandrif shampoo and conditioner, giving great guys, great hair and
long lasting scent and Dan Dreff fighting power all in

(36:20):
one product. Learn more about Flake Defense at old spice
dot com. Derwin James joins us Doran. How are you?
I'm doing well, man, How are you doing good? You're excited? Yes,
sir um. What do you think you're going? Man? I
don't know, man. It's depending on the quarterback, man, I know,
right like, seriously, we need you need somebody who can

(36:41):
who can do all be a versatile player the way
you are. More so in the quarterbacks. Do you want
to see them run on them go out of the way?
I mean, do you think they all go before everybody
else or do you think there's a chance that someone
like you or someone like say Kwan goes before they're
all gone. I don't know, man, Honestly, I don't know,
because now I'm not I don't know what the games
are thinking. A lot of teams, these quarterbacks, well, you know,

(37:01):
I know what I bring to the table. So you know,
we'll see what happens. You're gonna be in Haynes City.
You're gonna be in Tallahasa. You can be New York City.
I'm in Dallas right now, in Dallas. Uh yeah, yeah,
I'm out here right now. Look that that that scene
looks incredible. Have you been over Jerry's World yet? Yeah,
I've been over there today. Man, it's crazy for for
somebody who hasn't been there, who hasn't seen it. What's

(37:23):
the setup like? Uh? Man, I can't even put it
into words. Um. I don't think anybody can explain what
it looks like over there right now. But man, it's
it's crazy. Man, it's it's a blessing to be here, man,
crazy opportunity, happy to be here. You you grew up
in in in Polk County in Florida, Haynes City. When
did you first start playing football? When I was about
three or four years old? Started playing football, I'm in

(37:45):
the backyard and stuff, and then I started playing tackle
when I was about five, playing the seven year old.
I didn't play any flag. I wouldn't crack the top.
Five years old. You're playing tackle? Yeah, I was. I
was already playing tackle. You got do you have any
video of you, like laying some land some se when
you're on that when you're five years old. Man, it's
crazy because I got hit for the first time by

(38:05):
older kids. And man, I made a promise to myself.
I told my dad and I won't ever want that
feelings again. And then I just started like hetting people back,
you know, and never looked back since. So wait when
you started? When When did this this reality that's gonna
happen like tomorrow night, you're gonna have your name called
very very early on? When did it become Hey, I

(38:27):
could I could do this? Like I could? I could,
I could actually when it's playing for Florida stay or
play in the NFL. When did it become a reality
in your mind? When I was about nineteen years old,
about fifth grade, Um, if I wanted playing part won
the football, you know, I had a dream of, you know,
playing the NFL. I told people all the time that
one day I'll make it to the NFL, you know.

(38:47):
And I used to always tell my friends and you know,
some people in the community and believe it. But a
lot of people did believe in me, you know. I
mean I stayed true to it and you know, stayed
away from the distraction. Um now I'm here, man, Yeah,
and you're like you're like the prototype size for a
guy that can can be versatile. You know you can
cover people, You're big enough to cover tight ends, You're

(39:07):
obviously fast enough to cover wide receivers, and you also
you also like like to hit people. Um, how much
of where you like? Is there a fit for for
a type of defense that you want to play in?
Man like you said, like you just named all those
great trades that I have and that I'm blessed with. Man,
it really doesn't matter. Man if I go to a

(39:27):
like Seattle like type to deal with cover three types
of team like the fort nine is, I mean I
sit well and there. If I go to a quarters team,
I play good. And then if I want to cover
two team, I think I play with or man and
man like you said, I could, I can play in
any system. That's what That's what I think separates me
from a lot of guys. I'm not just one system
type of guy. A lot of a lot of talk
about you stay at home and and the Buccaneers drafting

(39:50):
you now, but that's that's close to home. But obviously
they got they got a know at quarterback. Good thing
or bad thing. If you happen to get to stay home. Great.
I you was all good up, but I said a
great thing. Uh you know, I feel like I bring
a lot to the table. And I know what type
of guy jamis says, what type of leader he is,
and um, I feel like just getting more guys in

(40:10):
like him with an alpha dog entier. I feel like,
um and take take the team in a good way.
Remember though, a couple of years ago, he called you puppies.
He called you guys, called he came in your locker room,
called you guys, some puppies. Right. That was? That was
that was Jamison. Now your food growing, food grown dog,
aren't you? Don't I don't really think back to when
I was a puppy. Yeah, I feel like I'm always
a dog every day, so I always I'm always want

(40:34):
to be a dog. And I feel like, uh, well,
I'll be all right, all right? Who's in your crew? Who?
Who came with you for the draft? I know you
guys got a bunch of tickets this year. Who's with you?
My mom and dad? Um, I got my sister, my brother, UM,
my grandparents, I got everybody. I got the whole family.
Did your did your brother get a good suit? Because
I know you have a great suit. Did you make

(40:55):
sure your brother and your pops have a good suit on?
Oh yeah, of course. Now everybody got everybody that looked
good it man, Hey, listen, we appreciate you join us.
Wish you the best of luck. Do you you want
to give us a hind come? We know you know
where you're going you want to get I wish, I
wish I did, but I really don't. Man. Right, who
where's the spot in Haynes City where everybody's gonna be
watching the draft? What's your favorite spot? The favorite my

(41:17):
favorite spot in the city, I say downtown by the
Rick Sinner, Downtown by the rec Center. We used to
get it done. Hey, man, congrats on life's work and
all be rewarded tomorrow night on Fox. Thanks for joining
us on Fox Sports Radio. All right, thank you man.
Derwin James joining us top defensive back in the upcoming
NFL Draft, Bradley Chubb joins us up coming next and

(41:39):
she stayed dude, another another another a C C guy.
We'll get his thoughts on Derwin, his thoughts on tackling quarterbacks,
his thoughts on where he's gonna go. There's there's talk
that the Giants could take him a too. Who doesn't
need a pass rusher? All right? Find out from the
top pass rusher in the National Football League's Draft. Bradley
Chubb joins US. Next and Doug Gatlin Show, Fox Sports Radio,

(42:07):
Boom One of America, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio.
M Hmmm, I butchered last hour when I said, like
Joey and James, New York City, I just I forgot
that the draft for so long it had been synonymous,
synonymous with New York City, right, um, and with Radio

(42:30):
City Music Hall. And they since moved it out of there,
and they're trying to make this into it. It's crazy.
It's really really crazy how many people will watch the draft,
how much it's say and Bradley Chubb is the perfect
example of it. The quarterbacks are interesting because we've all
seen what the quarterbacks can do. It it's really hard
to for you to tell me, Hey, Bradley Chubb NC

(42:55):
State telling you big time, big time now he's NC
States all time sack leader, and um, he did win
the Bronco Nagurski Award. He is the A C C
defensive player the year. Is gonna join US momentarily unanimous
first team All American. Like this dude is a a
stud stud ten sacks in each of the past two years,

(43:17):
fifty four and a half tackles for loss in what
essentially was a three year career. He played just to
two games in his freshman season. A special teams guy. So, um,
I think it's gonna be remarkable. Six ft four and
three eights, two sixty nine pounds. They got a huge
hands from the four six five, did twenty four reps

(43:39):
in bench press. That's kind of soft. We'll talk to
him about why so soft in a second. But you
can't tell me like, oh yeah, Bradley Chap great out
of his filmy, come on and stop it. Senci State,
Senci's day. It's not Oklahoma Baker Mayfield to you watched
in game time against Ohio State, or in the College
football playoffs against Texas against Oklahoma State or you know

(44:01):
whomever you know, it's it's not you haven't seen Josh
Allen play, guarantee it right. But you've seen Rose and
play Donald play. You've in Mayfield place, so you've you've
seen Sae Kwon Barkley, so you've formed more of an opinion.
It's harder with these players. Yet we'll sit there and
argue to the death about a guy who we're told
is gonna be awesome. We have no idea if it's

(44:22):
gonna be awesome. Anyway, Um, we'll talk Bradley Chubb in
a second. I said this last hour and I mean it.
I tweeted out and I mean it. There are like
sometimes we form that we say things are an upset
that they're really not. I think what's wildly widely considered

(44:46):
the greatest upset in American sports history is the night
Olympic hockey team like the Miracle on Ice should be
pointed out. That was a home game, but they were
pro and we had Joe's that's the that's that's the

(45:07):
anytime you have a mount rushmore of upsets, that's already
on there. And so when you think of other upsets
in Appalachian statement and app State went in and beat
Michigan at Michigan, remember that Lloyd Carr's last year at Michigan.
That one's deemed one of the great upsets of all time.
But the truth is that that Michigan team wasn't great.
They struggled with being spread. Remember Oregon came into dynastics

(45:30):
in like two weeks I think was dynastics two weeks later,
and bomb the hell out of him. They just they
were kind of classic old school big ten. You know,
let's do squats, let's do power lifts. And that was
a great upset. But that app State team won the
division was a one double A at the time now
FBS national Championships, it wasn't as good an upset in

(45:52):
terms of rise to prominence. Baker Mayfield was a walk
on at Texas Tech. Then he got beat out and
he became a walk on at Oklahoma to be a
two time walk on, a three time high Span Trophy finalist,
and a Heigsman Trophy winner. In the conversation of greatest
rise in the history of sports, if he and the

(46:13):
story of Cleveland is they're down to two guys, Jim
and Josh Allen. If if a six ft nothing, hundred
and nothing kid from Texas two time walk on becomes
the first overall pick in the NFL Draft, I can't
think of a greater rise to prominence in the history

(46:33):
of football. Maybe any other sport. Big You're in a sport. Meanwhile, um, look,
football is I'd like to complicate football and tell you
about all the different things, but it does come down
to the quarterback, but not just a quarterback. Can you

(46:54):
protect the quarterback? Can you intercept the quarterback? And can
you pressure the quarterback? And our next guest is widely
considered the number one guy at pressuring the quarterback available
in this NFL draft. He's Bradley Chubb out of NC State.
He joins us on the Doug Gatlip Show on Fox
Sports Radio. Badly, how are you? I'm going good? How

(47:15):
are you doing good? Man? Let's go back to your
freshman year special teams guy, barely playing, not getting miss
You got done with your first year at NC State?
What was going on in your mind? It was a
lot going on in my mind, man, I just didn't know. Um,
A lot of doubts just because I was playing a
lot of high school and came in school and I

(47:36):
was not playing it as much. So I was like, man,
this is just football thing for me. Should I transfers
I stayed here? Blah blah blah, A lot of different thoughts,
but um, in the in in hy hindsight, the best
thing was to stay an state in which I did
and I'm so so happy that I did. How close
did you come to leaving? Because everybody, there's lots of
athletes that have been through that tough first year and
you're like, man, maybe that's how close did you come?

(47:59):
I didn't quote, I didn't come that close. There was
a lot of life. I mean, my parents never like,
um let us quit anything that would started, So there
was never any transferring schools or anything like that. So, um,
I didn't come that close. But it definitely went through
my mind and all that. But um, yeah, it was
one of those things that I was just like, I'm
over it. So I'm I'm like, I don't care, but

(48:21):
it I'll ask you out of It wasn't I wasn't
close at all. Okay, So what changed? How? How did you?
How did you change to become the most dominant defensive
lineman in NC state history? Is the NC State that's
produced the likes of of Mario Williamson and others. What
what changed? Physically? What changed? Mentally? What changing your game? Um?
I have to change my mindset the way I approached

(48:42):
the game. Um, it was one of those things like
like every little detail I paid attention to and I
was focused on being my best and stuff like that.
So I feel like that's where I saw that the
most changed. Um, and the little things that I was doing,
But um, the physical attributes pretty much change on their own.
I feel like it was like a a few not

(49:05):
a two week things. But like you got your you
got your man muscles, right like everybody, you get you through,
but you go through puberty, et tweet teams, and then
when you get to college, like look, I get to
went to college playing basketball and under Dame, and like
I thought I had lifted waste before and then I
started lifting with those guys and I put on like
seventeen pounds right like now you're lifting and you're you're
just your body kind of evolves and changes. That's what

(49:26):
I knew, wasn't yeah exactly, That's exactly what it was like.
So coming down like two thirty five and then now
two every five, So it was just it wasn't mean
just eating the LT. It was just my body just
changing in different things. But um, no small little details
like like I said, I was working on help help
out when I got a lot bigger, only twenty four
reps of twenty five. Just that feels kind of soft
for you, like I would expected A three, A thirty

(49:48):
thirty one, thirty two, What what happened? What went wrong?
Only twenty four reps? Long uns man, I mean just
it's a long way down. But I mean, uh, I
was doing like nineteen rights when my first started training,
so twenty four was it was good for me. So, um,
nobody else's complaints. I'm I'm I'm totally messy. Bradley Chef
join us on the Doug Gottlieb Show. There's a lot

(50:08):
of people that make the Shermer connection, right, Pat Schremer's
the new clues of the of the Giants, And of
course kind of you go back to when you played
Vandy uh in the Independence Pool in two thousand and sixteen,
and you were all over Kyle Schrmer, his son, and
you know, everybody watches their kids a little bit differently. Um,
when you met with the Giants, was that brought up? Yeah,
it was. Actually I was the first thing. I thought

(50:29):
he was mad at me because I didn't realized there
was a son, and think he said, you know, oh man,
he's gonna hes gonna say something bad about it and
all this and that. But he was cool about He
was like, he like, how I got to do in
that game, and um, how it was good for his so,
um it was a great great games competition and uh
he was just and we just joked about it and
left it off. Is there is there a sense like

(50:52):
do you think you're going there? Like? What's interesting about
them is as much as there's a push for some
to find Eli's replacement and they need to run back
and say Quan, when they've won their last two Super Bowls,
they've done it with a great pass rush, what's what's
your sense of what their plans are? I mean, I
have no idea here. I don't even know if they're
gonna still stay there or they're gonna get a quart back,

(51:13):
go get one that they're't even gonna give me. So,
I mean it's a lot a lot of things that
can happen and a lot of things that we just
don't know. I'm gonna see tomorrow, And um, I mean
if I can get the opportunity that would be a
great opportunity, like you said, a great great defensive history,
and um, if I got the opportunity to play, that'd
be amazing. But if I don't just make the best

(51:34):
how to every situation that I'm placed with Bradley Chaff
from NY State joining us in the Dug gotlip show. Um,
what's your agent telling you? I actually told them not
to talk to me about different teams and different stuff
like that, just because I wanted to spend this time
with my families since they are the ones that are
they're here with me and making sure that I'm okay.
So spending this time with my family and mean, um

(51:54):
real hand all the draft stuffs to go on. All right,
So how many family members did you bring? I'm a
lot of family down here, but um, coming to the
actual jacks, I don't gonna be like ken so who
got cut? Somebody's gotta better they got the cut like
tenn No, I got some time that I I live in Dallas,
So um, those people weren't. I mean they're probably get

(52:16):
in the crowd student. I was still working on that.
But I mean at my tables will be an immediate family. Yeah,
I'm just I'm I'm I'm messing. I'm completely messing with
brad Bradley Chub joining us. All right, So have you
determined what you're gonna be doing? Like first cup pay
are you might not go if you don't go to
like how you're gonna do You're gonna make small talk?
You've messed on your phone? Like what are you gonna
be doing to kill time? I really talked about that

(52:40):
because I hope to be on before I have to
think about the ways to imentell of myself. But m
I don't know. Yeah, I might just just stay on
my phone. I mean to stay on my pals with
my family and stuff like that. But yeah, don't go
to your mentions. Don't go to your mentions, don't go
to Twitter, like just right like you want to you
want to be you want to be surprised, don't you right?
Bradley Chaps joined just thanks to Old Spice Red Collection

(53:04):
the Premium Sense, including the new Captain, designed to help
guys everywhere step up their scent game without breaking the bank.
Learn more Red Collection, Old Spice dot Com. Uh, I'm
sure you're excited, you're you Do you remember the name
of your first football coach? The man my dad? So yeah,

(53:25):
do you play your quarterback and running back? He had
to give you the ball as your dad. Yeah, bigger
than everybody. We just dee bowing people stiff arming them
and running guys over. Yeah, I mean, now I wasn't that.
I was. I was fadding everybody at that time. So
that's why I was scoring testdowns. Did did you call
him dad? Ord you call him coach? Was he harder

(53:52):
on you than everybody else? Or did he favor you? No?
He did everybody else. I mean it was one of
those thingles like my dad, are you doing it to me?
But I know I coached my son all the time.
What are you so hard on me? Like, dude, I
have to You're my You're my kid. I'm already. I'm already.
I'm giving you the ball all the time. I got
I gotta be gotta be hardy. Well, look, I know
this is a it's a life's work for your entire family,

(54:14):
not just you. But congrats on all the hard work
you put in. It pays off tomorrow night in Dallas.
We'll see it on Fox TV here on Fox Sports Radio. Bradley,
congrats and thanks so much for joining us. Yes, thank
you for having as Bradley chub of NC State. He
will be drafted very early on. Like I didn't want
to kill his like he's like, man, I don't I
don't feel like I'll be waiting there that long. Maybe not,

(54:35):
but he might, like there might be this run on
quarterbacks right there. Might So I just wanted you gotta
be preparing for everything, But you also don't want to
be that guy like, oh here he goes millennial looking
at his phone, the road ahead is about to take
some money suspected turns. Farmers Insurance can help you understand

have loved viv if I got drafted to be there.
But the and you know, I know you can you coaching,
although you're a terrible coach, but coaching your daughter's soccer team. Kidding,

(55:16):
rama's coaching your daughters soccer team. Like, Look, it's just
something special about the relationship between kids their parents, how
much they meant to them, and this being a night
where you celebrate, sure, the kid's accomplishment, but it takes
what's the old espression, It takes a village. It does
it really does and the parents being so involved is
such a huge reason that some of these kids are successful.

(55:36):
All right. Coming up next, Pete Carroll has a very
specific message for a very specific former player, Share it
with you next. Car shopping can be confusing with terms

(56:21):
Ryan Music, how where are you of things going on
on Twitter? I fairly aware. Have you seen the Kanye
West tweet? Yes? I have? Um, okay, so for people
who haven't seen it, I don't know who those other
two guys are, but Kanye West is wearing a make
America Great Again hat and he tweeted out, um, do

(56:44):
you know who those other two guys? He's with her?
No clue does it matter. It's like one of those
It's one of those one of those things that it's
gonna be very like. I know how Twitter will react.
Twitter hates everything, but it's gonna be fascinating to see.
Uh yeah, I've never understood the the yeasy shoes. I

(57:05):
just never like they all right, their shoes, they're just sneakers.
They look honestly, they look like Steph Curry, like the
Steph Curry ones that we made fun of. They they
look like some of the old Adidas that there was
like ten years ago Adidas. But I would say that
that's breaking Twitter right now. Is that fair fair to say? Yes,
that is the most popular trending thing on Twitter right now. Yes,

(57:28):
it's certainly. I have no clue who those guys are.
I have no clue. I maybe I should. This is
one of those like it's like when reality show starts.
Oh my my kids went to something called we Day
where you know, if you if you dontate time and
you you do good works. There was a there was
a big concert and festival. It's at the l a
Forum where the Lakers used to play. It is now

(57:48):
a concert venue. Last week and my daughter was reeling
off all these people who were there, and I was like,
I have no idea who that is. Like, oh my god. YouTube,
it's like, oh my god, only at YouTube to watch
old sports highlights. Sorry, anyway, I like when everyone I
I get, I guess that you're not you're not technically

(58:12):
supposed to You're not technically supposed to mention a player
by name right when he's a former player. But it's
really hard with what Pete Carroll did, to not assume
we know who he's talking about, and then to not
at least drive very very it feels. It feels like

(58:38):
it's a shot at one or maybe two former Seahawks.
And this is what happens with divorce, right. And you
can hear sometimes in the voice of people who have
worked at previous places when when they leave where they
don't want to call out a specific place, but they

(58:59):
paint the picture of somewhere they used to work, and
you're like, Oh, that's what he's talking about. That's what
he's talking about. Because here's what Pete Carroll said to
Greg Bell the Coma News Tribune. The thing I would
tell you is that we've been through a lot around here.

(59:21):
We've grown tremendously together and all that, and changes are inevitable.
All right, that's kind of a bland statement, right, Change inevitable.
Guys come, guys go. Sometimes guys can't hang with what's
expected for one reason another their growth, their development and
all that. And the best thing I can tell you
is they're not here. Oh oh shrm has been out

(59:48):
there saying stuff his entire career, he said, he said
also in the interview. So I mean, look, let's let's
call what he has to be talking about Richard Sherman.
There's no way he's talking about Michael Bennet because Michael
Bennett wasn't there long enough to be talked about, all right.
So the thing that I would tell you is that

(01:00:08):
we've been through a lot around here. That's a lot,
a lot of injuries. You know, Clip April injury. There's
been some other injuries as well. We've grown tremendously together
and all that, and changes are inevitable. None of all
of this is inarguable and innocuous. Sometimes guys can't hang
with what's expected for one reason or another, their growth
and their development and all that. And the best thing

(01:00:31):
I can and the best thing I can tell you
is this, they're not here. M hm. I mean, I
guess it feels like shots fired. I know, we know
he's talking about Richard Sherman, maybe talking a little bit
about Michael Bennett. And we want there to be something.
Oh no, he didn't. But I also think it's possible

(01:00:55):
that we look at it really smartly and think, h
Richard Sherman's coming off a torn achilles tendon. Who's making
too much money, you know, he he he, what is
it that is? He's right? His mouse is it was
a mouse right right? And checks this body can't cash

(01:01:15):
whatever it is from top gun Like, here's a guy
that carries the bravado of being the lockdown quarterback and
the spokesman for all things, for all things on that
Seattle defense, but a guy who as we change, as
they evolve, as they grow, we either do it together.
He mentioned, We've grown tremendously together and all of that.

(01:01:40):
Those guys aren't here. He drew a lot. Richard Sherman
drew a line in the sand last offseason, and and
in previous years that Russell Wilson wasn't one of them.
They Russell Russell wasn't welcome on that defensive side of
the ball. The offense and the defense are two separate units,
and the defense wanted to dictate to the offense what
they could do. There was never once, Richard, but never

(01:02:02):
as much as I think of Russell Wilson as kind
of a red light guy. Right when the red lights on,
he is the world's gray. He is a politician, and
I'm sure he's a different guy when that red lights
not on. The I will have Russell Wilson's back on this.
If when the defense got mauled last year, heck, when
his offensive line got mauled, there was never a moment

(01:02:24):
to which Russell Wilson ever called out a teammate. Richard
Sherman doesn't like an offensive play call. It doesn't like
something that happens. He he didn't like the not hand
the ball to Marshawn Lynch in the Super Bowl. He
has called it as he's seen it. There's an expression
that a good friend of mine in my business has
you can be right and you can be out of
a job right. Just because you're right doesn't mean that

(01:02:48):
that that your employer will see it that way. Sometimes
people don't want to be told that they're wrong. They
already know that they're wrong. It's like, look Darryl Bevil,
who has been replaced there a buffo calls a play
in the Super Bowl and it ends up um ending
in interception that costs the Seahawks or second Super Bowl.

(01:03:08):
And I understand that the Seahawks like, look, we would
have changed a thing. I don't. I don't love that statement.
I do think that it's it's okay to admit, Hey,
maybe we should have thrown the ball lower, Maybe we
should have thrown the ball out, Maybe we should have
hand the ball off. Sometimes it's time, score distance. We
thought we had the right call. Malcolm Butler, just read
the play. All of these things are reasonable. I thought

(01:03:29):
a reason a more reasonable statement would have been like, yeah,
we're sure we love a mulligan on that one. I
don't think anyone would have thought that Darryl Bevil or
Pete Carroll was the worst guy on earth, or a
turn coat or soft if they just go like, look,
we love a mulligan on that because we thought we
were the better football team, but they didn't. But when

(01:03:49):
you're when you make an incorrect call, the last thing
you want is somebody to go like you were wrong. Right.
Think about how that feels. I make mistakes all the
time on a show, all the time. Earlier today, earlier today,
I have I had a live read and I mistakenly
read something from a tease in that live read it

(01:04:12):
was a mistake. I made it, and I quickly moved on,
and I hoped, Hey, Rama's can you dump that thing right?
But the last thing I want is for Ryan Music
to get into my air going, what do you You
just made a huge mistake? You had dope, It wasn't
a huge mistake. It was a mistake. I'd like to

(01:04:33):
not make him. You gotta do it together, So I
don't think that I don't think these statements are innocuous.
We know he's talking about Richard Sherman, and I think
the point that he's making most is we've grown together
and this guy is no longer with us because he wasn't.
We weren't together, and the best thing is he's not here,

(01:04:57):
and that's hard to argue. Let's get damn by figure
out what else is going on in the world of sports.
What do you got, Dan? Well? The Seattle Sea Oxydy
have a first round pick. We'll see if they make
any moves tomorrow, picking eighteenth overall. A team with two
first round picks, the New England Patriots twenty first overall.
Doug And there's a report from the NFL Network that
says New England has legitimate interest in Louisville's Lamar Jackson.

(01:05:21):
Something to watch for tomorrow. We're also trying to watch
what's gonna happen at the top of the draft. Cleveland
picking first overall, and the Cleveland Playing Dealer says the
Browns are now deciding between either Josh Allen or Baker
Mayfield with that first overall pick. There's news on Dez Bryant.
Edward are reporting that the former Cowboys wide receiver turned
down a multi year offer from the Baltimore Ravens because

(01:05:42):
Dez wants to play in a one year deal in
twenty eight and then get a bigger contract for more
years in nineteen. The NFL Network did say Bryan not
expected to sign with the team until after this weekend's draft.
The Brewers that play slugger the first basement, Eric Thames

that's why you need head and shoulders. The NFL drafts
rookies first introduction to the National Football League. They gotta
be looking clean, they gotta be looking tight. Nobody looks cleaner,
especially with his hair, than Minca Fitzpatrick. He's joining us
live from Dallas. The Junior from Alabama getting ready to

(01:07:13):
be one of the top cornerbacks, if not the top
cornerback taking in the nash Football of course, Remember, he
broke Alabama's all time record for career interceptions returned for
touchdowns and he had five of them three years, played
in three national championship games. What a career. He joined
us on the Doug Gotlip Show. Make How are You'm good?
How are you doing good? So? Is the hair already done?
Do you get it done tomorrow? Like? What's the process? Like? Oh, no,

(01:07:36):
we are, He's just done already. I'm good. I'm just
I'm just ready away. Okay, So you had some special
plan hair wise, like I haven't. I can't see you
on video, so I haven't. I haven't seen Do you
have anything special in uh? In line for us? Um
all gots just getting the regular uh getting pad and
all that. But you know him, some of their projects

(01:07:57):
and the uh night and early tomorrow. He gave me
right game plan. You give me shot game me first?
So uh about it? Do you bring in your own
guy to fade you up? Or do you have this
There're a guy in Dallas that everybody uses. Oh, there's
a guy that everybody's using uh uh. He cut. He
cuts some people out here, and you know, we trust

(01:08:18):
him to top us up a little bit. So, so
who recommended him like that? He has to be has
to be a strong recommendation. Is an Alabama guy? Is
an NFL guy who recommended him? It was Alabama guy
and then a couple of other guys and used him.
So I'm gonna I'm gonna let him come to the
other guys first and then we check him out people
he's talking about Okay, Okay, you gotta gotta gotta check
out his work first, are you like? Yeah, yeah, what happens?

(01:08:41):
If he's not any good, then then we have to
go go and go like this right now, we're not
super good. Okay, So where are you going? Like you
just it's just it's just me you and you know
are hundreds of affiliate stationwide. Where are you going? Where?
My a? Yeah? In the draft? Where are you going?

(01:09:03):
Who's drafting you? Man? I wasn Do you get involved?
Do you do you read any of these my traps? No?
I don't really look at none of that stuff. I
looked at him earlier on like right after the season,
but you know, nobody knows who's going on. Everything changes
week the week playing. Nothing changing with the players, So
it's just a whole budgy people guessing and and and

(01:09:25):
and all that. But so I don't really look at it.
No strong feeling. I like, I've I've I've seen dolphins,
although some people think dolphins need to go up and
get uh, I need to go up and get a quarterback.
I've seen all different sorts of stuff early on in
that first round. You can't tell me you haven't peaked, right, Oh? No, man,
I mean everybody, Uh, everybody seems to be interested that

(01:09:48):
I've talked to, but you know they can't tell you
tell me that they didn't take me or nothing like that,
just because they can't promise that. You know, Uh, it
takes you change up, you shake up. Um. But you know,
I know somethings are interesting more than other. Like if
you if you have the three that you feel like
are most interested, have shown you the most love, who
would be? Oh, I don't know if I can say.

(01:10:10):
I can't. I can't really say, uh, um, yeah, you're
you're smiling like you know something I can tell I
can I can I can hear the smile on your
face the giggle because you know you're like, man, am
I allowed to say? Do you want to go? Five? Five?
Is not bad? I can't. I can't say anybody. I

(01:10:31):
can't say anybody make it. Fitzpatrick joining us on the
Doug Gottlum Show here on Fox Sports Radio. When you
left New Jersey to go to Alabama, there had to
be some sort of culture shock, right. Uh there wasn't
really could my father's side of the family from Alabama.
Uh so we would have if you go down there
in the summer sometimes to visit them and hang out

(01:10:52):
with them. Uh if I kind of knew what's bank
when I was going down there. Uh so, but I
can see somebody else that they've never been Alabama and
then they go down to Alabama from New Jersey. I
think them definitely being a coach or having the coaching
shops because you look look and like visiting a place
and being all in a place and playing at Alabama, right,

(01:11:14):
like that's you know that it's it's it is different?
Is it a fish bowl? Like? Was it everywhere you go? Um?
I know everywhere you go, everybody's about the tide, But
was everywhere you go pay people paying attention everything you do.
Oh yeah, some places more than others. I mean some
places like if I was and uh, like I walkmar campus,
people would recognize it just because they would be playing

(01:11:37):
on Saturdays and stuff like that. But I nobody really
bothering them. They would they would uh as the pictures.
You know, I had normal conversations with people, but um,
you know, when you when you're respectful to the people,
their state, us so, um, you know there was no
issue and nothing like that. What does coach Saban told
you about what you can expect once you get on
an NFL field? Um, he told me just to He

(01:12:02):
never told me what you told me what to do?
You know, he just told me to keep the same
mindset I had when I was out of failing those
keep working those, keep keep pushing, and uh, you know,
just just continue to be myself. You know, there's gonna
be a lot of other people that have different mindsets
and focus on other things. But he always told me
just continue to focus on what Jorge focused on, and

(01:12:22):
for me, that was just being the best possible version
of myself and getting the people around me better. How
competitive are you with with like a with a Denzel
award right, Like, he's the other top cornerback in this draft.
How competitive are you in terms of where you go
that you want to go before he goes? Um? I
mean other abuys want to be the first guy off
the board in position wise. Um, you know what were

(01:12:45):
competitive when it comes to that set. But uh, you
know the teams be another player more flipping to other
than ends up to him. But like I said, well,
we're extremely competitive, you know, just to just be able
to have the right to set. You know, I was
the first time and taken my draft class. That will
be a pretty cool honor. Have you ever played in

(01:13:06):
snow like you when you played in Jersey? What was
the worst weather you ever played in? We Um, I
played a couple of games in the snow, but we
played the worst I played in It was like team
degree but it was freezing rain. It wasn't snow, and
it was just like make the rain when it was
like ice just coming down, you know, and it wasn't
It wasn't fun at all. It was it was my

(01:13:27):
my championship game, uh, my senior year. Uh and we won,
but it was it was it was real. It was cold.
I bring it up because there's a certain team in
the northern Midwest that plays outside that needs some defensive
back help, the Green Bay Packers. I just I wonder
if you know, I wonder if you can hang in
the snow, because if you're playing Green Bay, you're gonna

(01:13:47):
play in the snow. Oh yeah, I'm back to deal
with the snow. I mean, this is not fun gonna
be um, you don't want to think about it when
you playing. It's more like after the game, when you're
sitting outside and he's just there and breezing. It's just
not fun. It Well, listen, we wish you the best
of luck tomorrow wherever you're gonna go. Obviously, we know
your name is gonna be called pretty early on. You
had a spectacular run at Bama. Look forward to seeing

(01:14:10):

pretty dopey move here Ramos, and I don't know what
to do about it. Are you familiar with Mendocino Farms?
So it's a southern California I don't know if it's
all California. A little channel sandwich chain, you are, you're
familiar with? Some people call it Mendy's Mendos. I don't
think so. I apologize to them though for not knowing. Anyway,

(01:15:15):
I went there for lunch before the show. I got
myself a yummy salad and Southside d half lemonade. I
feel I feel good about myself, But I got one
of those. Um I got myself one of those. Uh
was the buzzers that you know, like I'm number twenty two, right,
they'll let you know when it's time for your food

(01:15:35):
and too, you know, you don't just stand around, right,
but they do this thing to where they you can
mobile order. But you also when you like when you
walk in, you order there, and then you keep walking
in the line you pay, so you're not you're not
standing at the order and you're not standing at the
register like Okay, I'll have a cheeseburger. I'll have it right,
you're not doing the spalding. So she gave me this

(01:15:58):
buzzer and then the guy was you know, they come
out when it's to go, and they he brought it
to me. I forgot I had in my pocket. Do
I take it back? I mean, I take it back? Right?
You have it right now? Oh? Cheeze? Yeah, I think
you should take that back. And it hasn't been buzzing incessantly,
but probably at some point, where's number twenty two, number
twenty two home? Some article? I should go up there

(01:16:21):
and maybe i'd get another note sound like, hey, remember
twenty two guys never buzzed me. I have still have
the thing. You never buzzed me? Yes you did? Oh,
I never never happened. Fascinating. I was also thinking this,
Do you remember when people used to look over their
shoulder when they back out of a parking space? I
still do? You still do? Yea? Even though I still do? Yeah?

(01:16:44):
But I mean I guess when I say most people.
Do you have a landline as well? We do in
the house, Yes, for emergencies. M hmm. Can't trust those
cell phones all the time, Doug. I kind of agree
with you. I kind of agree with you every day.
This time, we'd like to play for you. A portion
of a previous show on Fox Sports Radio Fox Sports

(01:17:04):
TV we call it and Now. Chris Bruce Sharp was
on First Things First and he said this about the
New Orleans Pelicans. Are they playing well now because of
momentum and the excitement and all of it? Or is
it because this is actually a better team without him?
And I think they're a better team without him, especially
in today's NBA. I mean, the proof is in the putting.

(01:17:25):
Their record is better there twenty one and thirteen this
season without Boogie twenty seven and twenty one with him.
If if they had continued to play at that pace
and Boogie stayed healthy, they would have missed the playoffs.
They would have missed the playoffs. You know, last year
they were seven and ten with him, and that twenty
seven and twenty one record includes winning eight of their

(01:17:47):
last nine with him, So before that they were way
worse than that thirteen without him. Done include the playoffs
against a very good team, the Thrazy. If the record
with out him, not even including the four no sweeping
the playoffs, they would have been the third seed. They
were on a fifty win pace, So they play at

(01:18:07):
a faster pace when he's not there. Their defense is
better when he's not there. I don't think Boogie, as
much as his numbers look all gaudy and great, I
don't think he plays winning basketball. He takes six three
pointers a game. Why you're thirty five percent three point
shooter and you're taking six three pointers a game and
you're six eleven to seventy and nobody could stop you

(01:18:30):
on the post? Why are you taking six three pointers?
Clay Thompson takes seven? Um, Okay, there there's there's a
bunch in there. Are they playing better? Yes? Uh, it
doesn't allow them to match up better open at the four?
More sure? Does that mean that Boogie Cousins is useless?
So they wouldn't be They wouldn't be as good or

(01:18:51):
better with I Look, I like teams that have the
ability to play multiple ways, right like I like having
Boogie Cousins on my team. I just don't like having
to play Boogie Cousins for thirty five minutes a game,
because it you have to play two big guys. If
I could use him, would I use him as a

(01:19:14):
starter and then downship play multiple different lineups. Yes. The
problem is the money it takes to do all those things.
Like there's no reason that you couldn't be just as
good and have just as and have just as much
success if you had Boogie Cousins. You just have to.
Sometimes you take Anthony Davis high, you play Boogie at

(01:19:36):
the five. Sometimes you take Boogie Cousins out Anthony Davis
the fine, Sometimes you play him together. I think it
just takes. It just takes the ability for a coach
to say this is what we're doing. The problem is
the financial considerations it takes. If you were to keep
Boogie Cousins, were considering what he makes now limits so
much of the movement, the things that you can do.
But I think they're they're a tough matchup for the Warriors.

(01:20:00):
But part of what makes him a tough matchup for
the Warriors is that they're playing small and that Anthony
Davis frankly is just better than Draymond Green if they're
playing the same position. The problem with that is who
does who does Mirror Tage guard? Right? I guess Merritage
would guard andre Iguodala when they go small like I'd
still like the ability to throw the ball into Boogie.

(01:20:21):
And part of the thing with Boogie is he fell
fell in love with the jump shot, and Boogie doesn't
play hard all the time defensively. But I don't to
anyone who says they're not. They're definitively better without him.
That's a falsity. They're playing better because they're playing consistently
a more opened up floor game and their defensive numbers

(01:20:41):
are better. Fine, Fine, let's not go crazy about their
first round win. I thought it was a quality matchup
against the team that frankly overachieving the second Portland overachieving
the second half of the season. Damian Lillard played crazy well.
But they were able to match up with Damian Lillard
and see Jim McCollum, because they had two really good

(01:21:01):
guards who are two way players and Drew Holiday and
Region Rondo. So some of it was matchups, and that
matchup is not as favorable against the Warriors without Boogie,
who they could play big and they could wear down
any of the centers. Look at you. Draymond Green can
guard most any low post player. You can't guar Boogie
cousins in the post. Road ahead can take some unexpected turns.

lot of people have the Tampay Buccaneers taking Derwin James.
What will be interesting to see is what happens with

(01:21:46):
the Buffalo Bills, Right, Buffalo Bills have all those picks.
Everybody knows they want to move up, they want to
take a quarterback. Who do they take? I still think
the Jets who are gonna take Baker Mayfield? I do.
I don't know what the Giants are gonna do though,
all right? I and where the reports are now that
Sam Donald is not a target? Mary kake Habit, you

(01:22:09):
can question a lot of people in the outside knowledge.
Mary kake Habit knows people in that building, and I
don't think she would go to press with Hey, it's
Josh Allen or Baker Millfield, nobody else are not considering
Sam Donald. I guess my other question is this, if
I'm if I'm the Cleveland Browns, why haven't I decided
already right like you had like three or four months.

(01:22:33):
It's not like you didn't know you're gonna have the
number one pick. None of these guys just enter the
NFL draft, you know why, because they're that crazy uncle.
We'll talk with Chris Mannock next, talk some hoops on
the Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. What Up, Tug
Godlip Show? Fox Sports Radio's coming to you from the
beautiful city of Los Angeles, California, where, um, the summer

(01:22:57):
will be about the Lakers. But we ain't the summer yet.
Kids still in spring trying to figure out. What happens
with the Calves tonight is to take on the Pacers.
What happens with the thunder Well, the thunder go fishing
tonight is they are facing elimination at home against those
pesky Utah Jazz. Really really interesting stuff in the NBAS
We have four four game five's, Wizards and Raps tied

(01:23:21):
at two, so that thing won't be decided. Rockets and
and Timberwolves. Feels like the Rockets close them out and
move on to see who they play, potentially the Jazz,
and honestly, the Rockets may end up kind of dodging
a bullet a little bit here. It's not that the
Thunder are a better team than the Jazz. Jazz have
proven to this point to be a better team. But

(01:23:42):
I would say that's a the Thunder of the type
of team that could actually match up and prove difficult
for the type of play the Rockets play. I think
I think that, I think, honestly the Thunder are a
team that could could force a Game five, could force
a Game six. I don't think of Game seven against

(01:24:05):
the Rockets where I I don't think the Jazz, who
have played remarkable basketball, I don't think there is as
tough of matchup. Some of it comes down to matchups.
We talked about it moments ago, which I have it
to Marcus Cousins, like, if you you think that the
Pelicans are playing better, Sure, in a shortened series against

(01:24:27):
the Portland Showlblazers, they were better without Cousins. But I
do think that having the ability to play two big
guys occasionally against the Warriors, or even playing one true
low post player as poorly as Raymond Green has shot
the ball in the regular and in the postseason from
three the market. He can't guard to Marcus Cousins the
low post, and the problem is that they play him

(01:24:51):
too much together. But mat matchups, styles make the fight.
Then we've got the Raptors, who huge favorite tonight seven
point favorite to night. But that still does feel like
the same old Raptors. Or maybe it's that we underestimate
just how good John wall is when he's making jump shots. Tonight.
It's a big night in the association. Get ready for
tomorrow night, which is a big night in the NASH
Football League. Already had Bradley Chubb on make a Fitzpatrick

(01:25:13):
has joined us during when James joined us. If you
miss any of those top three, all three will go
in the top fifteen of the draft. If you missed
any of them, download the Dug Outlip Show podcast iTunes,
I Heart Radio app or go to Fox Sports Trade
wherever you download podcast, it'll be available. Alright, let's get
back to some NBA stuff. Spurs get eliminated. Is that
man who's last game? Is that Tony Parker's last game

(01:25:34):
is a great Popovich is last game? I could he
right off into the sunset? And and what about Kauai.
Let's bring in Chris Manness. Course, he hosts a show
on the weekend here on Fox Sports Trade alongside Karen
Butler noon to three Eastern time on Sunday. Let's start
with the Spurs because they're done. What do the Spurs
look like next year? Well, it's gonna be interesting to

(01:25:58):
see what the next couple of months look like with
terms of Kauai and the Spurs and how they seek
to resolve this. If they do, I mean, it's it's
it's going to be a pretty consequential offseason, Doug. I mean,
that's you know, that's kind of an understatement to say,
but I mean there's probably going to be a sit
down between Kauai and Pop and our c Buford and

(01:26:20):
the Spurs brass. At that point, there's probably going to
be a decision needs to make on that supermacts contract
with fly Letter sort of what it help looked like
from first expected. And all right, hold on, let's just
hey music, can you pick up? And let's get let's
get Manics is too good to have him on a

(01:26:41):
bad phone line. That's obviously not his issue. And by
the way, Ramos, do you look you feel like a
genius right now? Thank you for throwing that out there.
But if you're if you're listening last hour, if you're
listening last hour, you know that that Ramos admitted to
still having a land line. And because he still has
a in line, that is we were in cell hell

(01:27:02):
for for for a good kelbnis there with with Chris Bannocks.
We last thing, the last place you want to be.
We all may be going to hell anyway, but the
last place we want to be is uh is in
cell hell right now? All right? Do we have Mannix
back with us? All right? Here we go, um, Chris, there,
go ahead. So so you you were saying in regards

(01:27:24):
to the Spurs, there's a lot of questions of what
they look like. Well, I mean, I think there's there's
a series of meetings that need to take place over
the next couple of months. I mean, the Spurs have
to get on the same page with Kauai or try to. Um.
They have to figure out where he is medically. They
have to figure out if they want to give him
that super Max contract. I mean there's a lot of

(01:27:45):
ways that that this situation can go, Doug. But if
you talk to other teams, they're already kind of beginning
the early stages of medical research here, because if the
team's gonna make a real offer for Kauai Leonard, they're
gonna want to know exactly where he is with this
injury and how serious it could be. So it's gonna
be a very busy couple of months for San Antonio.

(01:28:08):
Best guess Manoble is that his last game? I don't
think so. I wonder though, if it's his last game
in San Antonio. Remember, Manu was willing a couple of
years ago to move. Remember you had that offer. Uh well,
I don't know if it was a formal offer, but
it was something on the table from Philadelphia. Um the
Spurs had to move up the money to to match it.

(01:28:30):
Um Manu is at least sown a willingness and it's
twilight of his career to look somewhere else. Now at
age forty, does he feel the same way. I don't know,
But if the Spurs decide to go in a full rebuild,
I have a hard time seeing Mano Genoble come back.
I don't think you can rule out, though, the possibility
that he might sign somewhere else on a one year

(01:28:50):
deal for huge money, because we've seen man who can
still compete at a pretty high level. How convince sorry,
that Pop comes back pretty convinced and it's nothing you know, Look,
I mean, stuff could have changed this year. Um, but
people in that organization have never given me any indication
over the last eighteen months that that Pop was kind

(01:29:13):
of in the twilight of his of his coaching career. Now,
I have no idea what his latest tragedy as, if
that's changed anything with him, or if, you know, if
he just wants to be the USA basketball coach in
and nothing else. But you know, up until the you know,
the circumstances of the last couple of weeks and certainly
of the last you know, five six months, he was

(01:29:35):
often conveyed to me that that Pop was was going
to be around for the foreseeable future. Chris Mannix, who
Sports and Fox Sports Radio, joins Us del Gallant show
Fox Sports Radio. Um, okay, so help me out with
the Warriors. I thought they looked really, really limited, you know. Uh,
Draymond struggled with his jump shot, doesn't really want to shoot.

(01:29:55):
He's got a big airball in Game four when he
was left wide open, and their bench just isn't as
productive as previous incarnations of this exact same bench. Let's
start with Steph Curry. Does he play game one? And
I don't think he plays game one? Um. In fact,
I don't know if they have a clear timetable for
when he's gonna be back. I mean, you know, you

(01:30:17):
hear about, you know, the progress he's making, and you
see some of the videos of him out on the floor,
but they continue to play play this very cautiously, which
knowes I understand. I mean, look, they just want a
series in five games, and you know, let's see if
they get into trouble against New Orleans before you start
pressing the panic button here. But I'm kind of with
you on on what the Spurs look like. You know,
Sam's Curry. I mean, they rely on on superhuman offensive

(01:30:41):
performances from Kevin Durant to get wins. And look that
can probably you know that that did get you five
game or four games against against San Antonio. But this,
this Pelicans team is legitimate. You know, playoff Rondo is
a real thing. Number one. I mean playoff Rondo is.
I was down there for a couple of days. He's
he's just a different player in the postseason. His ability

(01:31:02):
to control the game offensively really is remarkable. So they're
gonna better there. And their defensive game plan against Damian
Lillard Doug it was brilliant. I mean, Lillard talked in
the locker room after one of the games, I was
at about never seeing the type of defense that the
Pelicans threw at him. That's Alvin Gentry, That's Darren Irman,
their assistant coached, one of the top defensive guys in basketball.

(01:31:24):
They're gonna throw some stuff at Durant. That's gonna be different.
New wrinkles will have for Kevin Durant. And if Steph
Curry is not out there, the Warriors remarkably might have
a tough time scoring in some of these games. So
I think this, you know, Steph Curry coming back sooner
rather than later, isn't isn't really a luxury in this series.
Let's get to the thunder they played tonight. They're facing elimination.
I do think they win at home tonight, but nothing

(01:31:47):
they did in Utah look like now. Um second game
in in altitude is always really difficult, and there was
some huffing and puffing and some you know, Steven Adams
couldn't catch and he doesn't have the greatest hand, he
doesn't have that bad hands that that's fatigued, that's outitude.
But the Russell Westbrook thing is kind of spiraling a
little bit out of control here, and I I you

(01:32:08):
can be as disappointed as you want, Carmelo, you can
be as frustrated as you want that Rubio is hitting
more shots against you than he's hitting his career. But
it's how you handle it. What do they say in
Oklahoma City about what it's been like to try and
deal with Russell Westbrook, Well, I mean you don't hear
much outside of the positive really from from Oklahoma City.
I mean, you know they you know, Russ is their guy,

(01:32:29):
he's their franchise player. He did everything for them by
sticking around after after Durant left. So you're gonna be
hard pressed to get anybody you know, publicly or privately
to really criticize, uh, you know, much of what Russell
Westbrook does. But it's pretty clear watching that that the
way Russell played the last couple of games, is the
exact opposite of how they want him to play. I mean,

(01:32:51):
as soon as Russell Westbrook said that stuff about Ricky Rubio,
you knew they had to be celebrating in Utah because
that's exactly what they want. They want Russ to think
he has to win the battle against Ricky Rubio, to
attack the rim and right run right into him, to
run into go bear at the paint, to not you know,
be a facilitator in a game like that. That was
that was exactly how the Jazz hoped Oklahoma City was

(01:33:14):
gonna play it. If they are going to extend this series,
which I agree with you, I think they're probably gonna win.
Uh this Game five, He's got to play a little
bit differently. He's got to be more of a passer.
He's gonna make sure his guys get involved. This one
on one nonsense. This this macho stuff that's killing Oklahoma
City in this series. And if he does it again,
they'll lose Game five. From the calves off the hook,

(01:33:36):
I mean that's absolutely I mean that that fourth quarter
was one of the great choke jobs of this postseason.
I mean, they were two for ten from three point range.
It felt like from the five minute on, five minutes
to go in the quarter on, they were going for
the kill shot when the reality is there's no shot
blocking in Cleveland's front court, there's no interior defense. If

(01:33:58):
Victor Oladipo had onto the basket instead of pulling up
for three all the time, same thing with you know,
half the other guys in that perimeter. I think they
win that game. Uh, Instead, they were just going for
those daggers and it just didn't make any sense to me.
If they wind up losing the series, I don't think
they're out of it either, because you know, they played
well in Cleveland and Cleveland they're just a flawed team,
they really are. But if they do wind up losing

(01:34:21):
the series, they're gonna look back at that Game four
as probably the biggest reason why I completely agree with you. Um,
is it is it the Wizards are playing better than
we thought and John wall is making shots more than
he was in Toronto? Or is this kind of who
the Raptors are and regular season aside and ball movement

(01:34:43):
offense as opposed to the previous years. I so they're
still the same old Raptors. Well, Wizards are better. Um,
you know we we can talk about the difference beween
the Raptors at home and on the road, and there's
just such a such a contrast with the way they
play when they're away from Toronto. But Washington at the
bottom three seeds, Washington was by far the most dangerous.

(01:35:03):
I mean, there were an eight seed, you know, largely
because of John Wald, in part because they can't seem
to get either their own way sometimes. Um, but there's
real talent there. I mean, that's still one of the
best backcourts in the NBA. Auto Porter is still a
good player, Gore Tott, it can still be a present
in the middle. They're an extremely talented bunch. And you know,
I wonder if Toronto's confidence is shaken here now again,

(01:35:25):
what seven losses in the regular season on their home floor.
They're great in Toronto. They still only have to win
there to win this series. But this Game five is everything.
I mean, they lose Game five, they're gonna lose this series.
I mean, I think Washington is that dangerous. They can
beat them. Chris Mannox and the Insider for Yahoo Sports,

as the message. Of course it does depend on the message,
but the messenger is as important as the message, especially
in the NFL. I'll explain next. Online shopping can be confusing,

well not anymore. With True Price from True Car, now

hmmmm m m m m m m. Man, we got

(01:36:52):
day baseball in the bag. I'm sure we'll get an
update here from Dan Buyer momentarily. Um Dan Baro joins
us about half past the hour. You get some day baseball,
maybe some rumors here what Mary Kay Cabot has has
to say in regards to UH in regards to the

(01:37:12):
Cleveland Browns. Plus we had the press, we run through
as many stories as as are available and kind of
spitfire them here before the show concludes. A all that upcoming.
There's a couple of different sayings with the messenger, right,
you know, they don't shoot the messenger. Hey, don't you
the messenger? But the messenger is important. It's important. And

(01:37:40):
nowhere is that more um more uh obvious than in
what I read from the New York Times. Like I'll
give you a parallel. Do you remember, dearre, what Melania
Trump said that her that she wanted she wanted to

(01:38:01):
accomplish during her time as First Lady. Guess do you
guys remember she wanted to stop cyber bullying. And people
are like, ironic, right, ironic. So it's not that cyber
bullying isn't something that we need to we need to

(01:38:26):
try and quell, you know, it's it. It would be
great to say, hey, just don't go on to social media.
I love that the problem is there's just a reality
to it. Eventually, you're gonna have to give your kid
a phone or some sort of device to communicate with them.
They can't. You can't call one in her to collect
like we used to be able to, you know. I mean,

(01:38:48):
I guess you could borrow something else's phone. And there
are now watches to which they only call like four
differ phones that only call four numbers. But the reality is,
eventually they get the high school, some middle school, and
you're gonna need some sort of device to communicate with you.
And once you get those devices, like all right, well,
I don't want to let my kid have Instagram or
Twitter or any of the other social media networks, but

(01:39:10):
eventually they're going to have it, and they're gonna have
to learn to deal with the fact that they're mean
people out there. We want to have less of them. Anyway.
The point is, had anybody else decided this is a
big cause here, cyber bully, I don't think anybody would
have said, hey, you know, that's it's a bad thing,
especially a woman, if kids mother, you don't want that.

(01:39:32):
It's enough pressure on kids as it is. Um, but um,
you know, I look, I think that's the same thing
in the NFL. If you if you if you read
this story in the New York Times today, and if
you didn't, that's that's what I'm here for. Is a

(01:39:52):
story in the New York Times to which uh, they
have basically a tape of the conversations that took play,
the conversations that took place at in New York between
the NFL and the NFL, the NFL's owners and the
NFL players in regards to the protest and the president.

(01:40:17):
And one of the things that was brought up is, hey, look,
we want to we don't want to be in favor
of your protests because the protests are divisive. Some of
them are divisive by design, some of the devices because
the President kind of smartly hopped on the back of
the protests and made it even more divisive. And some
of it is just divisive because look, there's a portion

(01:40:40):
of people, however large, however small, there's a portion, especially
a football fans, that we don't like people bringing politics,
let alone kneeling before the playing of our national anthem.
We just don't like. So as businessmen, we don't think
it's good for business. On the other hand, as human
beings and as businessmen, it's smart to get behind the
right kind of social change. That's what was discussed, but

(01:41:03):
was also discussed is we need somebody, preferably African American,
who we who can be the figurehead, who can be
the spokesperson, who can be the messenger for this message.
They need to be playing in the NFL. And of
course others had asked, why can't it be Colin Kaepernick.

(01:41:24):
The problem with Kaepernick is, um, we were paying attention,
We were actually paying attention when he first took a knee.
He called cops murderers. He wore the pig socks, he
wore a he wore a uh, what's his name, Fidel
Castro shirt in Miami, right, like all of these things,

(01:41:50):
all of these things, and look, some of his own
personal baggage or professional baggage came out right. Remember, he
was the starting quarterback in the San Francisco forty Niners,
and he wasn't He wasn't seen as a leader. He
wasn't seen as somebody who ingratiate himself to guys on defense,
guys that he didn't guys outside of the quarterback room.

(01:42:11):
No one said he was a bad guy, but he
wasn't a guy's guy. And some of the NFL's owners,
if you read the notes of this meeting, I said, like, look,
find somebody who is super clean, find somebody who's successful,

(01:42:32):
Find somebody who is in it for the right things.
Find your message and find the right messenger and will
support it. Like Chris Long has done an incredible thing.
He did an incredible thing. He want a Super Bowl
two years and row two different teams. He donated his
entire salary, entire salary last year. Remember he also has

(01:42:54):
the Water Boys where they go in the off season
and they try try and go get water for people
in third world country's we're it's gonna saying, get clean water.
He's from a Hall of Famer's family. Chris Long is
by all intensive purposes, a well educated, great dude, great dude.
There's only one problem with Chris Long. He's white. He's white.

(01:43:20):
And as much as you want to speak to the
cause of black people and people of different skin colors
and how they believe they're treated in society, most notably
by police, he just can't be the white guy who
is the spokesperson for a movement. Just can't. It's got
to be somebody's black. And so I do actually think

(01:43:44):
the messenger, Matt matters. Sure the message matters. The message
is important and no one's disputing like it also should
be noted that the message has to have the right tone.
This is not anti all police, This is not even
antimos police. It's just anti police that can't handle all
of what it takes to be a police officer in

(01:44:06):
really trying times. Has to have somebody who's balanced, has
to have somebody who just is clean, doesn't have the baggage,
and company is not that guy. That's my takeaway from
the meetings. And I don't think anybody would argue as such.
You know, not only anybody would argue with such. The

(01:44:32):
road ahead is bound. It takes some money expected turance.
Farmers Insurance can help you understand your coverage options with
our practical knowledge game. For than ninety years of experience,
we know a thing or two because we've seen a
thing or two. Found agent at Farmers dot Com are Farmers.
Let's bring in Dan Buyer. Dan doug don't mean to
be the bearer of bad news, but those angels no
longer in first place today after the Astros dropped him

(01:44:54):
in Houston five to Halos did take two of three,
but the Astros end up winning the series. Finale today,
thanks in part to a solo home run from Jose
L two A, his first of the season, Mariners edged
the White Sox by account of four to three. All
Nationals right now against the Giants eight one in the
fifth inning, while Fittsburgh has a six four edge on
the Tigers in the fourth and the Rockies of the

(01:45:15):
seventh lead the Pondres by account of four to one.
Brewers have won seventh straight. They're gonna have to continue
that winning streak without first baseman Eric Thames. He's out
for a significant amount of time because of a torn
thumb ligament. Champions League. You saw it on Fox Sports
one Real Madrid when the first leg of their Champions
League semifinal at Byron Munich to one. Now in the
NBA Playoffs tonight four Game five's Pacers in Calves seven

(01:45:38):
Eastern George Hill at game time decision for Cleveland. That
series is tied up at two. Wizards and Raptors at
seven o'clock Eastern. Jazz try to close out the thunder
in Oklahoma City at nine thirty Eastern time, with the
Rockets home to the Timberwolves up three one. That's also
at nine thirty and news from college basketball. The Commissioned
on College Basketball, urging the n C Double A too
and the one and Done rule and allow undrafted players

(01:45:59):
to be able to return to college. The commission was
formed in October following the FBI scandal and was led
by former Secretary of State condolez or Rice Doug. Speaking
of that, um, those those findings from that committee, Let's
bring in Fox Sports college basketball insider Aaron Torres. You
can hear him on Fox Sports Radio Saturday evenings one

(01:46:19):
pm to one a eleven pm to one am Eastern time. Uh.
Aaron's written covered college basketball for years, especially recruiting and
UM and what's your biggest takeaway from the committee? Which
this was formed after the FBI, you know, arrested six
assistant coaches in college hoops. Rick Patino was fired. What's

(01:46:41):
your takeaway from their announcement earlier today. Yeah, First of all, Doug,
I appreciate you having me. I mean, you know, to me,
my biggest takeaway was honestly that I'm not totally sure
that the committee really understood what the tasket hand was
for them. You know, whether you or I or anyone
believes that kind of you know, college athletes should be

(01:47:03):
paid or how they should be paid, or they should
be paid for their likeness or whatever. The bottom line was.
This committee was put together after it was clear that
the top high school players in America are receiving compensation
well before college and well outside n c A rules.
So to me, you know, I think that the ideas
some of them, uh you know, we're you know, I

(01:47:26):
get where they're coming from. But you can't remove the
one and done rule without the NBA. If you have agents,
you have to have some sort of NBA involvement. This
felt like a step, but it didn't feel like I
think the finality that a lot of people wanted. Do
you think the one and done rule is the heart
of all the problems? Um? No? I mean, you know, honestly,

(01:47:46):
do you know this is something? First of all, I
think the one and done rule, and I've said this
many times, has been good for all levels of basketball.
I think it has created more interest in the NBA Draft.
I think it's created more interest in the NBA Summer League.
High school basketball is now on TV more than it's
ever been. Um, you know, I think where where it

(01:48:06):
stems from is uh, you know, NBA certified agents going
to these kids at fourteen, fifteen, sixteen years old and
throwing cash in front of them. Now, the now, the
one and done is a byproduct of that. But I
don't know that removing the one and done solves everything.
And I don't know that the one and done has
been the problem that has created everything. I think that it's,

(01:48:29):
like I said, a symptom of the problem, but the
larger problem is still at hand. And I don't know
that there's any one thing you can do which can
eradicate it completely. Oh, I I actually disagree with you.
And and and here's why is it? Is it better
than having them go straight out of high school? I
guess sure. If if it was remember like, if everything

(01:48:52):
was handled the way it should be handled, then yeah,
if everybody completed an entire year, went through the year
they were advised, you'll be drafting. The reality of it is, though,
that uh, far too many kids select their school based
upon how quickly can I get in and get out
of college, regardless of the realities of it. Once they

(01:49:13):
get there. They don't invest in academics, getting to know people,
being a college student because they all think they're going
to be gone far too many declare after the first year,
as we've seen with the ridiculous numbers of guys putting
their toe in the water for the draft, and then
the guys that don't have the type of freshman year
they think they should have, they all transfer. Some of
them transfer early on mid semester, some of them transfer

(01:49:36):
at the end of the first year, which causes this
this constant tu malt over for for schools in terms
of rebuilding. I actually completely disagree with and I know this.
There's a huge sentiment of people who cover like this
is just a small issue. No, it's the biggest issue,
because they all think they're one and done, and the
math tells you there's like twenty five or twenty that

(01:50:01):
are legit one and done, and yet there are a
hundred and fifty that declaire, and there's three or four
hundred more that think they belong in. So let me
ask you, and I don't necessarily disagree with that sentiment.
Does allowing the best high school players to go to
college or go go to the NBA does that solve
that or does it just create the same cycle a

(01:50:24):
year earlier? UM, I think eventually, if you did it
and then they have to stay for two or three years.
I think what would happen is initially they would all declare,
and two or three years in I think plenty would
be like, wow, that was really a bad plan. A
lot of these guys are are still playing in the
G League. They're not making anything. They didn't get a

(01:50:45):
chance to play in college. It would hurt both levels,
I think immediately, and then eventually would even out like, look,
I think the NFL has the best system. It just
does three years is absolutely positively the best there. Most
of them aren't ready. Uh, They're been some people that
say you get a blue chip committee and you get
five guys from high school that can go in. But
the problem is some years you have one or two.

(01:51:07):
Some years you have five or six. Some years maybe
you have more. Um, I don't know if there's if
there's we are kind of looking to perfect a system
which is mostly perfect. And and then I was gonna say,
that's one thing I totally agree with is I think,
you know, in reading everything this morning, and as I said,

(01:51:28):
I'm a studo one and done advocate, I liked the rule.
I think it's done more harm than more good than harm.
I do think in ten years, we're all going to
look back and be like, wow, that really that whole
era was not as bad as we thought it was. Right, Like,
you know, like the NBA people are first of all
gonna be like, damn, we got an extra year to
evaluate these kids again, entire level competition. We didn't have

(01:51:49):
to go to the summer league events, we didn't have
to go to high school games whatever. And of course
college basketball fans, um you know, get to see these
kids on the stage the best players for a year.
A lot of them are more than a year. I
totally agree with you. I just think that, you know,
I I think that the question becomes with today's news.
You know, did the committee service purpose? I don't think

(01:52:09):
that it really did. But I think again to your point,
that the issues are broader than I think even maybe
a lot of the people on the committee fully understand. Okay,
so how do you fix summer basketball? They seem to
they seem to want the n c A. I've been
told they want USA Basketball to to to do all
these events. Like look, we both live in southern California.

(01:52:29):
Last weekend there was they were you know, there's some
events in Los Angeles events and Anaheim event, big event
in Tustin where I grew up, a huge event there.
How do we how how do we how do we
handle their their idea of taking the shoe companies who
fund many of these events out of it. Yeah, I
found I found that part really uh ironic, considering you know,

(01:52:52):
they want USA basketball NBA involved, but the NBA just
signing a billion dollar contract with Night a few years
ago to you know, provide uniforms and everything. So you know,
to me, this is one and and maybe you just
feel differently, Doug, I don't know. I don't think the
people and this to me shows how little the committee.
Note that committee that was put together today fully understands

(01:53:14):
and grasps like simple concepts of college basketball. Like I
think most people think a you is a bunch of
seventeen year olds getting together and playing in front of uh,
you know, high college coaches to earn a scholarship. And
the reality is that AU runs from one age eight, nine,
ten up straight through the end of high school. And
most of these prominent AU programs have teams that you know,

(01:53:39):
are for a span of ten years. And so to me,
the idea that we're just going to put a system
in place that one is able to I don't even
know if replicate is the right word, but to have
a similar effect. I just don't see how that happens.
And then I think the second part becomes this is
that you know, we all think of of the downs

(01:54:00):
side of AU, which is maybe the best handful of players,
you know, being quote unquote bought and sold maybe at
the highest level two agents to sneaker reps, whatever. What
about the hundreds of kids that need AU to get
identified by colleges, that need AU to get a scholarship offer.
I mean, you could you and I both could name

(01:54:20):
fifty examples of kids that without AU maybe would not
have gotten the chance to play college basketball or not
gotten the scholarship's offers that they did. That's one that
would that's been puzzling to me. I think it's one
of those kind of uh, you know, uh narratives that's
kind of just kind of run wild. And I don't
really understand why this idea that you know, a youth

(01:54:41):
basketball and summer basketball is this evil, corrupting thing. I've
never bought it. I've never really understood why that's the narrative.
And I think even today showed how little a lot
of really smart people understand how that process really works.
I don't know if they how little they understand. I
think it's that sometime as we take and we do

(01:55:01):
this in all parts of society, we take one or
two stories and we take it to be a narrative,
right like we do this. We do this in social media,
you know. I mean, heck, if you're if you're anti police,
you go onto Facebook, and there are police officers to
do things that they should not be doing, and we
make it out to be all police officers are bad, Like, no,

(01:55:22):
they're not. There are bad police officers, they're good police officers.
I I you know they're bad. There are teachers that
do not use the appropriate language with students, but that's
not all teachers, not all public school teachers and all
private school teachers and not. And you know, you can't
fit everybody into just just one just one narrative. Um.
And now look, there are a lot of flaws in

(01:55:45):
the a U system. There are you know, and there
are too many teams and too many tournaments and it's
too water down and there is not and there are
too many events and yeah, you would you would like
to not have the influence of a shoe company pick
out where a kid is going to go. But I
think that the number of kids are influenced by shoot company.
You can count on both hands and your feet more

(01:56:06):
so than you know, the thousands of kids that go
play college past. But it's it's it's complac Was there
any good taking away from what they found? Um? Yeah,
I'm just trying to wrap my head around really quick
about what they what they kind of came up with.
You know. I like the I like the idea of
players that aren't drafted being allowed to come back to college.

(01:56:28):
I still think there's some logistical issues that need to
be figured out there, you know, I think, frankly more
from the NBA perspective and from college. I mean, I
just don't think the NBA one they want. I don't
think they want the two or so kids that declared
this year, let alone this significant amount more that could
come of it. I wouldn't have a problem if Joe

(01:56:49):
Smith from filling the blank school, you know, thinks he's
an NBA procepect goes through the process, finds out that
he's not going to be drafted, finds out, you know,
in theory they should have this information before drafting. But
if a kid just makes a dumb decision, I don't
know that. I have a huge fundamental issue with him
being allowed to go back to college, you know, as
if the whole thing never happened, assuming of course, that

(01:57:10):
he you know, finishes the previous semester, it is eligible
and all that stuff. Grace Aaron Tori shake him out
Saturday nights on Fox Sports Radio eleven p two, one
am Eastern Time. Paul hum on Twitter. Uh, he's just
a wealth of information regards to college, who's the recruiting
game and everything. Can't say I'm much appreciate you joining
us and we'll talk soon. Appreciate you do, Thank you.

(01:58:13):
Aaron Torres, you man, we had a great show. Outstanding job.
My commendations to our production crew. Just really really well
produced show. I can't speak much about what I've said,
but Man, Derwin James joined us in German. Dam Derwin
James joined us. That was today Nick. Uh. Now, I
want to say Nick Chubb, but it's not Nick Chubb.

(01:58:35):
And why don't I say that's just I know it's Bradley.
Bradley Chubb, although I'd like to talk Nick Chubb is
gonna be one of the one of the top running
backs taken. So Bradley Chubb, Derwin James, um Man, we
had a great, great show. And uh, look, Cindy cass

(01:58:55):
has done an amazing job booking this show and really really,
really really please with Minka Fitzpatrick who as well joined
us and Aaron Torres. If you missed any of the
doug Otlip Show, download the podcast. I'll put it out
on the Facebook page and Twitter as well as Fox Sports,
Trader dot com. Wherever you download podcast, it will be available.
Let's get to the boat the press. M m m

(01:59:20):
m m m m m m m h damn buy
what do you have? My friend? I have got this
and we touched on it a little bit earlier, but
I think it bears repeating. Mary Kay Cabot of the
Cleveland Playing Dealers says the Browns are Don's either Josh
Allen or Baker Mayfield with the first overall pick in
tomorrow's first round of the NFL Draft, and there are
reports that Hugh Jackson knows about the pick, as do

(01:59:43):
the other coaches and the Browns coaching staff. So who
do you think it is? I think it's Josh Allen.
I think it is too. I think it is too
I think Look, we all have a tendency to fall
back on something that's been successful for us in the past,
right man, mean, so some of you've done in the
past works for you, You You copy it. And last year

(02:00:05):
they took Pat Mahomes. And Pat Mahomes if you saw
him playing college, he threw for a ton of yards
at Texas Tech, but his footwork was bad, and but
he just I mean like you could throw it through
a brick wall and then they weren't a very good team.
But that doesn't you know, that doesn't have anything to
do with him. I think John Dorsey comes over from
Kansas City. He has a solid starting quarterback in Tyrod Tether,

(02:00:30):
which allows him to want to get to develop a
guy who he thinks has the best arm. You gotta
have a big arm, you gotta have big hands, you
gotta have a big body if you're gonna win in Cleveland.
Not just playing outside in Cleveland, you play outside in
Baltimore and Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. I think Josh Allen's this
guy as well, and I think he's trying to recreate
what they did in Kansas City last year. Doug Ian

(02:00:51):
Rapp report is reporting something that I predicted on my
Sunday morning so here on Fox Sports Radio. The report
is green Bay trying to trade up in the first
round for number fourteen. Of course, new leadership in green Bay,
Packers and Raiders have the most picks in the draft
with twelve, so green Bay another team at trying to
move up. But unlike maybe the Bills and the Cardinals
Green Bay could be looking at defense. Yep, yep, I

(02:01:14):
think and Derwin James is the type of guy that
that who we had joined us um if if it's late,
if they remain where they are in the draft, you
could make me fits Patrick. But Drwin James is the
type of game breaking player in the defensive backfield. Six
ft six ft three pounds, can can cover any position.

(02:01:35):
I mean that he's a guy who we talk when
we talk about Sean Payton, Seoan Bay and saying guys
that can cold to cover multiple positions with his size.
He can cover tight ends with his hitting. He can
actually tackle and play safety, and he can play defensive
back and cover as well. LaVar Ball has pulled his
son's le Angelo and Momelo from their Lithuanian team with
two game two games left in their season. LaVar told

(02:01:57):
a Lithuanian reporter that he doesn't get along with a coach,
so he decided to take the kids and leave the team.
In the least stunning news of all time. I know,
right like this is my surprise face. And the thing
is no one's no one was going to draft LaMelo,
but maybe somebody would have taken a shot at summer
league or a late second round pick had the dad

(02:02:19):
not been involved. Now you just fear that the dad
will be around, and the dad will be a problem
and his sons. You know, the middle soun's not good
enough to the victor go. The spoils Chicago Tribune saying
that LOYALA Chicago has given men's basketball coach and friend
of the program Porter Mosier a multi year contract extension. Yeah,

(02:02:40):
Porter Mosier was. I think he was interested in Zave
here if that came open. But this was a weird
year with coaching jobs where none of them really fit.
Good thing for Mosier is most of his players from
the Final four run are back. Bad news is that
hasn't always proven out to be proven to be something
that works for you. You lose two of your top
six in rotation. We'll see. But supporter motion, it was

(02:03:00):
a magnificent ride. They were really well coached, and here's
hoping to make another run next year, much like Butler,
remember who made two runs consecutively to the final four?
Backing out there and pressed. That was the press, all right,
Doug Gollup show, Fox Sports Traded. Tomorrow is Draft day
and we have just an outstanding show for you. Bucky
Brooks is gonna join us. We'll take it to Dallas.

(02:03:21):
We'll do our own little mock, and hopefully we'll know
who's going number one. Rest up tonight, watch the NBA Games.
Report back tomorrow
