Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Boom, What Up America, Doug
Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, coming to you from the
sunny streets of Los Angeles, California, where my Chargers crushed
it right. Sure, we'll take Derwin James absolutely, give me,

(00:25):
give me, gim me, gim me, gimme. Gime. We're here
from the Rams tonight. I'm sure as the Browns are
on the clock, I want to get to Josh Rosen
playing to every stereotype of who Josh Rosen is. Everyone
is Josh Rosen's exactly who you thought he was. But

(00:47):
sometimes you have to look for the clues when you're
on that first or second date. We got a lot
to get to a couple of teams. I have zero
clue what they're doing. Uh. Some teams I know what
they're doing and I still don't like. And then there's
other teams that did an outstanding job. Just take the
best player, which is usually the best way to set

(01:10):
yourself up for success, don't overthink it. And the Browns
can sit there and say, hey, look, for the last
six weeks, we knew we were taking Baker Mayfield. We
just didn't tell anybody, but there's a reason they didn't
tell anybody. If they've done all this research and they
already knew Baker was the guy, why didn't they tell everybody? Well,

(01:33):
you know, would have hurt the potential trade value. You
weren't trading that pick, not even clothes. Couldn't you traded
it before you You've made moves before, you traded down,
before you gave it up, opportunities before they had to
take a quarterback number one. And if you're picking first,
you don't have to try and fool people. The reason

(01:56):
they didn't tell everybody is because people would said, don't
do it. The number one draft pick has got to work.
You can have a bust at two, you can have
a bust at three, you can have a bust at four.
It pales in comparison when you have a bust at one.

(02:16):
And here's what I think the Browns are doing, not
just at one, but also at four, trying to outsmart
the broom. And you can do it. It can be done.
But we talked about the risk yesterday, we talked about
the likelihood for success. I don't even think it's it's

(02:39):
the risk and the reward that they're looking at. I
am by nature. And if you listen to the show,
if you watched me on TV, you've listened to me
called games. I like counter arguments. I think it's a
side of intelligence. You can see the other side to
every argument. Then you're showing that you have a level

(03:00):
of of aptitude that others just missed because most people are, oh,
you know, for lack of a for lack of a
more eloquent way of saying it, Like Chris Spielman says,
ceball hit ball, right, most people are just grab the
first thing, grab the first argument. The most obvious answer
is the answer. But I like counter arguments. I like

(03:23):
trying to explain what just because everybody thinks the n
c A is a bad thing, I can explain, well,
it's actually a really good thing. I can explain to
you why Jon Gruden being out of coaching for a
decade but covering the league in the way in which
he covered his league is way better, is way better

(03:43):
than hiring a coach that had been in the NFL.
It is I can find the counter arguments that are smart.
But this to me is it's like Samsung guy, It's
like Microsoft tablet guy. I'm not saying Microsoft tablets aren't great,

(04:05):
and there's something like I grew up on the Microsoft word, right.
I still I have Apple products around my house. I
don't really know how to use most of them, and
don't act like you know, law do you have to go?
You have to go take a class at Apple and
pay for it, within it and use it within a year.
And even then you're just kind of doing what the
guy told you to do. That said you can tell

(04:28):
me how good your Samsung phone is, how good your
no Kia phone is, how good whatever. Other Maybe call
me a lemming, but what everybody's saying like that is
what you need to do. That's what you do. And
every person I've talked to in the NFL says, well,
Sam Donald is the better quarterback prospect. He's bigger, he's stronger,

(04:54):
he has bigger hands. He played against a better league
defensively at our competition. Overall, uh, he made some spectacular play.
He's less experienced, which gives you more chance to mold him.
He's only twenty years old. Mayfield's twenty three years Like everyone,
if you if you lined up thirty two g MS,

(05:16):
thirty two of them, my guess is that they're at
least twenty five and maybe more would tell you Sam
Sam Donald's the guy. And sometimes when we search for
that alternative argument. It's great for TV, it's great for
a boardroom, it's a it's food for thought. Well, maybe

(05:39):
we should consider considered it, but then we went with
the sure thing. We went with the surest thing possible.
It seems to me that the Cleveland Browns, who have
gotten it wrong for so many years, tried hard and
maybe tried too hard to get it right. You get
to be where you're just a little too cute. It's

(06:00):
not different. When the Seahawks lost the Super Bowl to
the New England Patriots, Well, you know, we thought it
was second down and we're thinking they might call time out,
and we wanted to do this. We wanted to or
just line up and give the damn ball to Marshawn Lynch.
This is not that hard, right. It's a lot like
at the end of an NBA game. I said this
at the end of the Calves Pacers. Was that Game five?

(06:23):
The other night? Was Game five? Wasn't it? Game six?
Is tonight? Right? The Calves figured out, let's just get
the ball Lebron James and he'll figure it out. The
Pacers should have doubled team Lebron James and don't let
him get it, and when he gets it, makes somebody
else beat you. Sometimes it really is that simple. What
is the old acronym K I S S? Keep it simple? Stupid,

(06:48):
isn't it? And so look, maybe John Dorston's gonna hit
it out of the park. Maybe they know something we
don't know. But I can tell you unequivocally that from
college coaches, some of whom coached against some of whom

(07:12):
coached um Baker Mayfield, to NFL coaches, to NFL personnel people,
all of them like man. I like him too, but
that's too high. He's not the best quarterback process. But
I don't love Josh Rosen's act. But Josh Rose looks
like an NFL quarterback more than Baker Mayfield looks like

(07:35):
a quarterback. Here was John Dorsey after the draft for
the Cleveland Browns organization. This was the best available player,
and I think that when he brings this organization, I
couldn't be more excited to him after you know, and
those other guys are really good quarterbacks too, But I
just felt this was the best fit for this organization
moving forward. He he fits Cleveland in this underdog mentality.

(07:58):
He fits Cleveland in you say we can't, and we
absolutely can. And he is different than anybody else. You know,
they've they've tried so many different guys. He is different,
but he played in the league. And I'm a Big
twelve guy. I will tell you without any question that
there have been years where the Big twelve was as

(08:21):
competitive as the top at the top, as as other teams.
But the league is built specifically to stop spread spread.
It's really hard to have a good defense, and it's
such an offensive league. It's if you have to be
an old school college football fan to understand this reference.
It's like the old whack games. You guys, remember when

(08:43):
by U used to play late at night and they'd
have Tie or Coy Dettner or or Steve Young or
any of their quarterbacks that would run around and throw
for a million yards. Remember those old whack games. That's
how the league is built because because all of them
are spread teams, all of them throw out a ton,

(09:03):
and all of them have great wide receivers. They have
big armed town at quarterbacks. But when you're trying to
compare what Baker Mayfield was able to do statistically. Remember
you're comparing it apples again to oranges, and you can say, well,
he went into the beat Ohouse state at Ohio State.
Remember even Ohio State defense, which is littered with pros,

(09:24):
littered with prosu it was an offense that was inept
at that point in time. And oh yeah, by the way,
it's a defense that's built to beat Big ten style
of teams, not Big twelve style of teams where they
spread you out and run oop to you. There wasn't
another Big twelve player drafted last night. And the Big

(09:47):
twelve players that will be drafted are offensive players and
the Big twelve defensive players that will be taken. Guess
what they played for Oklahoma who Baker Mayfield didn't compete
against when he was putting up all these numbers. So look,
I like Baker Mayfield. I love the story, but I
think all the Browns did was in an effort to

(10:07):
be in, an effort to have the counter argument, an
effort you try so hard to be different. They didn't
just do what anyone should have done, which is we've
been bad for a long time. We got the number
one pick. It's a good quarterback draft. Who's the best quarterback?
Sam Donald, Let's take him. Here's a little bit more
from Dorsey with Baker Mayfield. What we have is a

(10:28):
guy who we talked about is a who wins the
game of football, is ultra competitive, revered by his teammates
and anybody who has ever been around him. This is
a guy that is earned everything he has ever had
from high school to college and now up here. He
is a winner. He's competitive, He's I mean, he really is. Again,

(10:49):
Landry Jones is the all time winning his quarterback in
Oklahoma history. Oklahoma wins football games. They just they do
they do, They've won. They're awesome. But you'r deal from
a talent advantage in comparison to the rest of the league.
You just are And the whole winner idea like, uh,
what was it? Joey Joey Dorsey was what's the what's

(11:11):
the kid's name? That was the University of Miami quarterback
Dorsey Right, Ken Dorsey, Right, Ken Dorsey, want a ton
of games? Tim Tebow wanted done the games, Like stop
with the whole like you're he's a winner thing. None
of what he said was wrong. He has earned everything
he's gotten. He is a very good leader. People do

(11:32):
like playing with him. Like now of these things wrong,
but there comes to a point to which you like
little guy playing in the bad weather, playing with inferior talent,
trying to do something in Cleveland it hasn't been done.
Keep it simple, stupid. When they look and if you
don't think that's who they are, why would they take

(11:54):
Denzel Award at four? They just they got too cute.
They got too cute. Chubb is sitting there at five,
a dominant defensive player who can give you a consistent
pass rush. He's got a great motor. He's had ten
sacks the last two years. He fits in honestly fits
in better with the Browns and four three team. He

(12:17):
doesn't three four with the Denver Broncos. But the Broncos
are like, he's we were there, Broncos, We're gonna trade
out of that pick. By wait, Chubb's available, Yeah, we're
taking him. Why because he's the best player. Keep it simple, stupid.
He's really good at football and he'll figure it out

(12:39):
and look. I like the fit stuff I do. I
I was, I was always worried. Um, I'm always worried
with four, three and three four defensive ends handing the
dirt and standing up. That's a big adjustment. But at
some point in time you just go like, I don't
really know, Like Derwin James wasn't the wasn't the type

(13:00):
of safety that the l A Chargers needed. But Tom
Chlesko sit there and goes like, wait, Derry James available,
He's way above other guys on our board. We're taking him.
You can tell me that the Browns weren't trying to
be cute, that they really evaluated Baker Mayfield and evaluated
the other quarterbacks and thought he was better. If it

(13:21):
stood alone. When you combine it with the Denzel Award pick,
it tells you all you need to know. Sometimes people
try and act too smart and it gets too cute.
I do this often times when I'm talking to you
and I try use try to use bigger words than
I might use normally, and then sometimes I I fumble

(13:41):
it and stumble it or use it in a wrong
wrong tense or wrong reference point. Just keep it simple, stupid.
Who's the best player? We got the number one pick,
Who's the best quarterback who gives the most likely success?
And they didn't you know they're the guy that was like,
you know these Kias are or you could buy Alexis, Summercedes,
and you know anyone of Cadillacs, any one of the

(14:05):
high end cars. Kyas are really making nice cars. Yes,
but there's a reason they've done. There's a reason that
they have. Uh, what's the ones who do the the
research to find out what the best made cars are?
Not Car and Driver. That's a magazine. Shoot JD. Power, right, Like,
there's a reason JD Powers out there. It doesn't mean

(14:27):
that every Lexus or every Infinity, or every Cadillac or
every high end car is made better than a Hyundai
or Akia, not all of them. But if you got
a Hunter Gray in your pocket, aren't you gonna buy
the one that JD. Power and Associate says is the
most likely to give you consistent performance? Keep it simple, stupid.

(14:54):
The road ahead is bound to take some money inspected turns.
Farmer's Insurance can help you understand your coverage options with

No one thing or two because we've seen a thing
or two. Find an agent Farmers dot Com Insurance no difference, right.
We heard of Farmers. Yeah, I've been around long time, Yeah,
ninety years. Like keep it simple, stupid, all right, Um,

(15:17):
Josh Rosen is an Arizona Cardinal. We gotta talk bubble
wrap in the Cardinals quarterbacks. We got to talk about
the unluckiest backup quarterback in the history of backup quarterbacks
and why Josh Rosen is exactly who you think he was.
It just took Draft night to expose it. That's up
coming next. Progressives new home Quote Explorer was built to

com today and see if you can save I feel
like hold the speaking my thing, my ears, you're gonna

(16:12):
be the DJ Doug um VICI killed himself by the
way that that's what That's what it seemed like with
the with the notice his family put out. Terrible, terrible
twenty years old man read that last night. I was
completely bummed out, completely bummed out. Yeah I do like

(16:35):
some uh E d M. I absolutely do, And I'm
bummed out by that story like anybody else's stuck out
the show. Fox Sports Radio Joe Banner, former uh NFL
president and CEO, is going to join his course, spend
a lot of time he was. He was with the
Browns more recently, and then before that was with the Eagles.
Joe Banner is gonna join us in six or seven minutes.

(16:57):
We'll get to that upcoming. I haven't been on a
first date in a long time, so I'm not I
can't speak from first date reference, but there is something
that I think Rama's can speak to. Uh. Buyer of
course has been married like a year now, and he
and Least we were together for a long time before
they got married. But one of the things you do

(17:17):
when you get married and you live together is you
start to have couples dates, right, couples first dates, especially
when you have kids, and then your kids are buddies
and you're like, well, maybe we should go have dinner
because our kids get together. Right then you share the
money one sentner and and so there's a parallel. Whether
it's a couple's first date or whether it's his and

(17:41):
her first date. It doesn't really matter first dates. It's
not a true representation of who the other person is. Right.
You're trying to put your best foot forward. Last night,
for example, we went out to dinner with our neighbors
that are our friends. But the first time we've been
out to dinner with them, and my wife put on
just a great in this beautiful new dress she had

(18:04):
and like I was wearing like a Travis Matthew shirt
and like jeans and some Chuck Taylor's and she's like, no, no, no, no,
no, no no, what are you doing? And I was like what.
She's like, what are you? What are you wearing? Like
they were disproportionate. Here. I'm wearing this nice dress and
you're wearing some A G jeans and some sneakers. It's like,
just trust me, it's Newport Beach. This is appropriate, okay,

(18:28):
But she wanted me to put her our best foot forward.
And I'll never forget. And this is going back like
three months ago. We've just moved from Connecticut to California.
M it's more than that, obviously, And we went to
dinner with a different couple and they were proclaiming, Hey,
the New Porch Beach thing not for us. We're not
part of the scene. Not part of the scene, which

(18:51):
of course is what everybody says, even people who are
part of the scene. It doesn't matter if it's Beverly heels.
It doesn't matter if it's whatever nice of your town.
Right in Dallas AND's Highland Park and in uh, you know,
the north Shore was all the suburbs in Chicago, or
you're at the Gold Coast of Connecticut and Greenwich. In

(19:12):
areas like that, there's there's kind of a showy sort
of scene, right, and everyone wants that we just keep
it real here, right. We buy we American made cars,
and we live check to check, and we're not you know,
we don't have mommy and daddy's money. We work hard
for every We were lived within our means. Everyone tries

(19:33):
in that first dinner to promote themselves as being the real,
authentic thing. I remember we're at this dinner is like
three or four months ago, and my wife nudges me.
I was like, what's your belt? No, I don't look
at a woman's belt. Generally not a good thing for
a husband to look at the waist of another woman.

(19:55):
Why what's your belt? It's a Gucci belt. Okay, Well
she just said they weren't part of the scene, and
she's wearing a Gucci belt. Do you see her daughter
was like, no, she see the stinkers. She's wearing. It's like,
I don't know what am I supposed to know about
these things? The stinkers have four or fifty? Hell does
she she's twelve. What the point is that even if

(20:18):
you say all of these different things. Hey man, we're
not part of the scene. Hey, money is not important.
We don't We're not showing people public school kids. But
we come from nothing. We live within our means. We
don't want reality show. The truth is, you check out
the belt, you check out the shoes, check out the car.
You watch how they handle themselves, things they talk about,

(20:38):
how blinging the jewelry is. You go to their Facebook page,
their Instagram, you troll them a little bit, like, dude,
are you talking about they're one of the real housewives, right,
Josh Rosen No, he's not a real housewive, not a
real housewife. No he doesn't have a Gigucci belt. I
don't know about his stinkers. But remember you go back
a couple months ago and Josh rose In talked about

(21:03):
if you wanted to be the number one pick in
the draft and he is not, to get picked as
high as possible in my game is to go to
the right team because that success is long term. I mean,
I'd rather have Tom Brede's career than get picked first overall,
have four year career. Well, hey, look, I don't care
what I get picked. It's just it's more about fit.

(21:24):
It's funny because last night, remember there's a hundred and
twenty eight Division one schools. Right, there's eighty five kids
on scholarship at these schools. Okay, hundred times eighty five. Yeah,
you want to give me about a rough estimate of
how many kids were talking about We're in the eight thousand,

(21:47):
nine thousand sort of number, right, and of course eight
nine thousand aren't coming out, but there's probably at least
a thousand draft prospects out there. Let's just say a
thousand draft prospect. He went ten, So if you have perspective,
you go like, look, could have gone in the second round.
It could have been Lamark Jackson sitting there when the

(22:08):
Heisman Trophy, not doing anything, twilling my thumbs by myself
with my mom. That's, you know, doing the Aaron Rodgers
last guy in the green room thing. I was drafted tenth.
He could have said, what a great fit playing indoors
got David Johnson, got Lara Fitzgerald learned from Sam Bradford
got Mike Glennon, by the way, Hey to like being
my glenn second year in a row. You're like, yeah,

(22:30):
I got a new team. Like wait, you drafted another quarterback?
What in the hell? No one is unlucky. As Mike
Glennon happened when he's in Tampa, happens in Chicago. Now,
wherever Mike Glenning goes, they're gonna they're gonna go like,
do we love you? And then we're gonna go draft
a better quarterback. Anyway. Remember the guy who said I

(22:51):
don't care, I don't care. Am I going number one?
I reb have Tom Brady's career, but I don't I
don't care. But this was Josh Rosen yesterday. I was, honestly,
as these picks were rolling by one, two or three,
I was angry. I was pretty piste off at these
teams were passing by me. But the second I got
that call, for some reason, all that went away and
just a really deep sense of motivation set in. I
looked at it, nine big mistakes made ahead of me. Look,

(23:14):
I I understand he's just being honest and and you
can use that as part as the motivation. But Josh
Rosen is everything that we told you he was and
not what he purported himself to be. He wants to
be a guy who's a free thinker. He wants to
be seen as honest but understanding. He wants he thinks

(23:36):
he's smarter than everybody, because he's been told you're smarter
than everybody. Right. Both his parents Ivy League grads. He
went to u c. L A. He thinks he knows
more about life than other people that have lived twice
as long. And it all came out. Sam Donald said,
expect wins, right, expect this is this is Sam Donald

(24:00):
interviewed after he's drafted a lot of wins. I think
that's what I can bring into a franchise. And but
at the same time, and that's the process. But I'm
ready to go to work like a sudden. There's just
there's something about Rose into which you're like, he's a phony.
He's wearing a Gucci belt, he's got four shoes. He
is not what he tried to He tried to show

(24:22):
himself to be the entire draft process. I don't care
where we could drafted. I'm cool. The first thing out
of his mouth was nine mistakes forward, nine big mistakes
made ahead of me, nine big mistakes made ahead of me.
But you said it didn't matter what where you get drafted.
Of course it matters. Of course it matters. That's one

(24:46):
of those. That's one of those when people say, let
me be honest with you. So everything you said before
wasn't honest. Online car shopping can be confusing. Not even
Moore or a true price from true car. Now you
can know the exact price you'll pay for your next car.
So visit a true car enjoying more confident car buying experience.
Springing dan fire, what it sounds like they are about
nine mistakes made before the right SoundBite was played by
John Bomas. There, oh hey, it happens. It happened. Second

(25:09):
and third rounds of the NFL Draft taking place tonight
at Arlington, Texas. Browns on the clock right now. They
will make their pick just after seven o'clock Eastern time.
You will see it on Fox Cowboys tonight. Jason Witten
expected to announce his retirement after fifteen seasons in the
National Football League. Not not a surprise by the way
I heard. He he did well with the Monday Night
Football thing. Uh and um I heard Joe Thomas did

(25:33):
particularly well as well. For Carson Palmer, who tried out
for some other places, has done well. But the Jason
Witten thing not surprised. But how about this CBS lead
announcer Tony Romo, Cowboy, Fox lead announcer Troy Aikman, Cowboy um,
Michael Vans one of the lead guys at the NFL network,
and now Jason Witten with with the ESPN. It's like

(25:55):
duke basketball only cowboy football and it's amazing. And they
have one bub kiss in twenty years? How about them
Cowboys on TV. Whitten would leave the team as their
all time leader and receptions and receiving yards. Veteran quarterback
Jay Cutler also expected to retire again after coming out
of retirement last year to play a season with the Dolphins.
Three games six is tonight in the NBA Playoffs, including

(26:16):
the Raptors and Wizards in d C at seven o'clock
Eastern time. Washington Post says that Otto Porter is gonna
be out for the series. He's gonna have a procedure
done on his leg as he's been dealing with a contusion.
So no Otto Porter Junior tonight for the Wizards. According
to the Washington Post and a Baseball Update bottom before
Cubs lead the Brewers two to one Doug Day Baseball.

(26:39):
That's funny. Um, we're Moises Aluisalu when he when Bayer,
when he played for the for the Chicago cu remember
he came from Miami and uh, a buddy of mine
remembers when he first went to Chicago Cubs. He was like,
how do you like playing in Chicago? It's like, I
don't know a lot of day games, Like you didn't
know when you signed up with the Cows. They're gonna

(26:59):
play a lot of day games, Like they didn't have
lights until like twenty years ago. Like, what are you?
What are you doing? Um? Let's uh, let's welcome to
the guy who's incredibly decorated during his time in the
National Football League, whether it was with the Eagles, with
the Cleveland Browns, or most recently as a consultant with
the Atlanta Falcons. You have seen him on TV as
well with the good folks at Yes PNS. Joe Banner,

(27:21):
he joins us on the Doug Gottlip Show here on
Fox Sports Radio. Joe, you've been in this position before.
Where you're in Cleveland. You've got a high draft pick.
You know. My my personal reaction in talking to people
who know a lot more about football than I do,
is it felt like they tried to get cute. They
tried to outsmart the room. What's your reaction to Baker

(27:42):
Mayfield go number one overall? Well, it kind of two parts.
I mean, had I had the pick, depending upon the
interviews and thessiling, I mean, it is fine. I would
have picked Donald, But I have to say something. I
don't think that Mayfield is a bad pick. I mean,
most of the successful quarterbacks in the league, the things
that they have that are most important you can call

(28:03):
it processing, intuition, intelligence, whatever you want to call it
an accuracy and Baker Mayfield actually has both of those
things to a very very high level. So it isn't
the first pick I would have made, But I actually
think he's got a pretty good chance to be successful.
And it's a little bit of risk that they talk
and maybe in the light of the history and all,
they shouldn't have done that, but I look at it

(28:25):
as a players a real good chance to finally solve
the problem they've had a quarterback. It is you're right.
I mean, look, it is a neck up position, and
it is an accuracy position and by all accounts, a
super high football football Like you, what is it in
your mind that separates Sam Donald? What would have made
you draft sdam gald ahead of Baker Mayfield. Well, the
two things that you worry about with Baker are you know,

(28:48):
the off field stuff that we've seen, which again I
wish I had said in an interview because I would
have had a better feel for how consequential that is.
But you know, you want to resolve that, and you
know you would rather have a taller quarterback if all
things are equal. So again I probably would have leaned
towards Donald, but I actually few Baker Mayfield is a
very viable pick and reasonable thing to have done. Um, Okay,

(29:10):
Sam Donald ends up falling to the New York Jets.
Jets took a lot of risk, and probably the truth
is a lot of NFL people kind of chuckled at
the Jets being the Jets that far before the draft,
drafting for the getting the third spot. But they couldn't
be any happier, right, I mean, you're got the third pick,
you move mountains, and you end up getting your future.
And oh yeah, by the way, he gets to learn

(29:31):
from Josh McCown, who, by all accounts is one of
the kind of great mentors still remaining will probably be
the start of the start of the season. Feels like
the Jets killed it with a with a lot of luck.
You know, everybody who's ever been in a league and
had success, if they're honest, we'll tell you that lucky
is an important part of success. The you know, the

(29:51):
arrogant people will tell you, but the but the down
to earth people will tell you that every one of
them have had some moments where they got really lucky
and that actually had a big part in their success.
So you know, sometimes you call the right play and
it doesn't work, and sometimes you call the wrong play
that does. I mean, I I do think that the
craziness of not offering the same deal to the Giants

(30:13):
and to the Cleveland to the Browns was doesn't make
any sense. You know, I think they overpaid a bit
and maybe could have made a better deal. But I'm
sure they feel now like it was well worth it.
And if we're all right about Donald being a quality quarterback,
you know that it is worth it. Okay, so let's
let's get to the Giants. Obviously, you went against them
for years when you're when you're in Philadelphia. You know,

(30:35):
Dave Gentleman, who had been with the Giants before then
was down in Carolina. Uh, he values you know, what
happens inside the tackles. He values the running game. We've
seen him do some things like jettison ng the likes
of Steve Smith, for example when he was in Carolina. Uh,
it's a it's a running back heavy draft. Some people
love sa Kwan Barkley, some people aren't as in love
with Sae Kwan Barkley. But taking you running back at

(30:57):
number two overall when you're the Giants, you never draft
that high and you got Eli Manning who doesn't have
that much gas in the tank, is that what you
would have done. I've been very very critical of this move.
I've been critical of it. You know, now we've added
the fact that he has said since the draft he
didn't even let them take calls to see what the
offers were. And what if somebody's offering you two ones

(31:17):
for running back? I mean, to me, that's a no brainer.
I do think bark was going to be a very
good player, But I would never have taken him at
two the they you know, Dallas Cowboys lost Troy Achemen.
We were in the division. It's ten years to find
the next quarterback. And I was in Philadelphia we lost McNabb.
You know, Vic helped us with a transition. But the
truth is it took seven years to get to wins uh.

(31:39):
And there's lots of stories like that around the league.
The exception is where you go from one good quarterback
to the next, like the Coast. Yeah, it's very very rare.
So to not, you know, to just assume that what
we're going to find another guy in the next year
or two when history says that that's possible, but you're

(32:00):
playing way against the odds. It just doesn't make any
sense to me. And in his in hindsight, the only
way they're going to be right is if all the
quarterbacks taken after the first pick turn out to not
be any good. I mean, I said in an interview
that for the first two years, they're gonna be very
glad they have him, They'll have Eli. They have a
real chance to be very competitive for two years. In

(32:22):
the long run, whether it was trading back and getting
a bunch of picks, or picking one of the quarterbacks,
or my mind picking Chub over Barkley because I think
he's gonna be an excellent pass rusher. And you know,
to me, next to quarterback, that's the second most important
thing to have on the team, you know, and and
you know some of the quotes. If you pick a
quarterback and you're wrong, you've ruined the team for five years, Bologne.

(32:44):
If you admit it after two years, go get the
next guy. You did the same thing as any miss pick.
You've hurt the team because you've used up a value
Bassett and you didn't get a good player, and you
move on. It cost you five years. If you're gonna
be a stubborn GM and you're not gonna admit you
made a mistake, then you can get ruined for five is.
But he said it like that was a rule, Like
if you miss on a quarterback, you ruined for five years.

(33:05):
That's not a rule. Just to admit the mistake, move
on and get the next guy. Joe Banner joining us
in the Doug Gottlieb Show, you mentioned Chubb. Everyone I
know raves about him, and of course the Broncos are
sitting there going like, wait, he felt to us, we'll
take him, but he is more of a four or
three fit than a three or four fit. How difficult
is that transition considering the motor he has. But the

(33:26):
position essentially changes when you got to play with your
hand out off of the dirt. No, I think it's
a meaningful transition. But you know, at this point, with
teams using three and four wide receivers so much, sub
packages are well over fifty percent of the plays, they're
gonna have a four line fourm in front of those situations. Uh,
And then the other situations they can move him around

(33:47):
a bit, and he's athletic, and I feel be okay,
by the way, Whereas I don't really question the Browns
first pick, even though it isn't who I would have picked.
I think it's still a good player, and I think,
what is a good player? And then passing on Hub
at four, we're gonna look back at and think what
were they thinking? And not because Ward is not going
to be good, because they had a chance to have
Garrett and Chubb, two outstanding pass rushes on rookie contracts,

(34:12):
by the way, for the next four years. So you've
got two stud pass rushes costing you nothing for four
years to have passed up that opportunity, and again, I
think Ward's gonna be a good player. So it's not
like I think they picked a bus. To me, that
may have been the biggest mistake of the whole first round.
What if I told you that the biggest surprise was
not the Marcus Davenport to the Saints, but giving up

(34:35):
a one next year for Marcus Davenport for the Saints.
Felt it feels like they overpaid for a player that
they really liked. You know, this is this disappointed to
me because I've worked with Champagne. I really like Champagnon. Uh.
You know, they had a history for a while where
they were just overly aggressive, overpaying people that get in
deep cap trouble, you know, trading as if you know,

(34:55):
there were always one player away. And in the last
couple of years, it seemed like they learned from those mistakes.
They were getting very disciplined. They were actually trying to
get extra picks. They were being more careful with the
contracts and not signing anybody to whatever it took. I
kind of looked at this is like going back to
their old behaviors a bit where they just felt I
had to have a guy so badly that whatever it
took to get him, they were going to pay. And

(35:17):
I like to have import. But he's not likely to
be good right away. He's likely to help right away,
but you know, he plays a little bit high. He's
still learning some of the moves he needs to have
to be successful at this at this level. So I
think they'll be glad they got him, but they got
him thinking well, we got Drew Brees. We've got to
go all in for a year or two. And I'm

(35:38):
not sure he's going to be good that quick. There
are very few defense events pass rushers that have had
a huge impact his rookies, and I'm gonna be surprised.
I think he'll help, but I'm gonna be surprised if
he's a difference maker as a rookie. Joe Banner, of course,
you know he used to run albron the Eagles, ran
the Browns, and of course most recently the Atlanta Falcons.
Just an incredible wealth of knowledge his professional career spent

(35:59):
in the office in the Nation Football League. Joe, thanks
so much for your perspective. UH look forward to talking
to very very soon. As the NFL draft continues tonight
my pleasure, look forward to it and enjoy it. Joe

Psychic alright, Psychic, We'll get to some NFL draft stuff
in a little bit, but I want to start out
with some NBA news. So, Psychic, will the Warriors play

(37:35):
Steph Curry in tomorrow's Game one, as Steve Curse said
the guard was questionable to return from his knee injury. Yes,
they will. They will play him. He will not start,
but he will play in Game one. Psychic? Will there
be one, two or three game seven's coming up on Sunday?
As tonight we have three game sixes in the NBA playoffs?

(37:56):
Maybe there will be none, there will be two games seven?
Two games? And where or what teams would be featured
in those games sevens? My psychic powers only reached so far. Okay, Hey,
I've been saying that that the Oklahoma City thunderbeat the
Jazz tonight, that that one looks that the outcome looks murky.

(38:17):
I do think that. I do think that's more likely
than the Pacers beating Lebron again. Even the Pacer has
been close. This feels like classic Lebron, like he is
he is to the Pacers what Jordan used to be
to the Cavaliers. And then, of course I think one
of them will occur in the Wizards Raptors series. I

(38:38):
think that want to go back to Tromp. A friend
of the program CBS Sports Jason Lockin for A says
the Chargers may have an interest in trading up to
take Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph in tonight's second round
of the NFL Draft. So, psychic, will the Bolts trade
up to get the era apparent to Philip Rivers? I

(39:00):
do know. I know they liked him. Um, this is
one of those ones that I have friends in that organization,
so I know they liked him a lot, that he
was more impressive. But I think the answer is no. Um,
Look what he has going against him is he's not
good and bad weather, kind of got small hands for
and he's a little bit mechanical but played a lot
from the gun, and Philip Rivers plays a lot from

(39:22):
the gun. Um. I think they'll consider it, but I
think at the end of the day they'll pass. Now.
Bovada says the New York Giants are a four to
one shot to draft a quarterback with the second pick
of the second round. Psychic, will the Giants take a
quarterback with the thirty fourth overall pick? I do not
believe they will take a quarterback with the thirty four
overall pick. I think Davis Webb is going to be

(39:43):
their backup this year. I think there's something about David's
Webb to which they believe he can be a viable
backup for them. And uh, they'll they'll punt on on
getting a getting a young quarterback at least in round two. Finally,
Doug se kwon Barclay's jersey was the most popular and
sale us amongst all first round picks last night. So psychic,
do you see your son getting a jersey of any

(40:05):
of the players that were drafted last night? Sam Donald, Dude,
Sam Donald? Or chosen Rosen? You know we got the
chosen people. Thing going on is game time on the
Duck Gotlin Show. Derwin James joined us with two days ago.
Three days ago. I thought for sure he wouldn't get

(40:28):
past Tampa Um, but he did, and he gets to
stay in warm Weather. He gets to come play for
Gus Bradley and the l A Chargers. I want, what's
that like when you're sitting there and you think you're
going earlier, and you're waiting, waiting, waiting, and then ultimately
you're called, and everybody's like, wow, what a great pick

(40:48):
with us? Is a great pick? Why wasn't I taking earlier?
We're gonna ask her when James plus Baker Mayfield meet
with the President Cleveland, play some of that for you
next in the dodug Gotlip Show Doug Gottlip Show, Fox

(41:11):
Sports Radio. M m m m m m m m
m m m m m m m m hmm. We'll
get to Derwin James safety l a Chargers in mere
moments as he surprisingly fell to the Chargers, who quickly
gobbled him up. They're like, what for real, it's a misprint, right,

(41:33):
have you ever done that? What is it? Like? What
is it? How? Why don't own asked? Just go get
it right. It's like when you're going through the sale,
rack youn go to the sale like I'm a I'm
a sale rack guy. Right, Just be honest with you.
It doesn't matter what story I go to. I go
to North Rooms, I go to Banana Republic, I go
to any any little shop or whatever, like first thing
I hit up as the sale wreck, just gotta see

(41:54):
if there's anything like whoa, whoa. There's some Jordans threes
on the sale rack in a size twelve. What's the deal,
You're like looking for scuffs. Somebody must have warned them.
Maybe they're like a Chinese knockoff. You're like, no way,
these are sixty dollars, No way, They're like, break out

(42:17):
the credit card, get him as quickly as that's what
the Chargers did. We're still reacting to the first round
of the NFL Draft. UM. I felt like, if you
if you wanted to tell me that the Browns legitimately
thought Baker Mayfield was the better quarterback prospect. Okay, I'd

(42:37):
buy that if it wasn't for the fact that they
went Denzel Ward at four. When Bradley Chubb is staring
them right in the Bradley Chubb fits and gives them
a dynamic one to combination. It signals to me, trying
to be too cute, trying to be too cute. But

(42:58):
it is Cleveland and and and They're the one thing
about organizations you can say, well, they're all the same,
They're all No, they're not. If they were all run
the same, we wouldn't have Cleveland being in app for
as long as they've been in APT. I haven't got
a chance to talk about Josh Allen going to Buffalo,
which actually actual lost sense. Really does you gotta be

(43:20):
big and strong to throw on that horrific weather there?
But it does feel like a lot of risk. But
I mean, if you you thought Bradley Chubb wasn't that
well regarded, think of it. The Denver Broncos were going
to trade down of that five spot because they thought
the Browns are taking shob no doubt, like, wait, he's there,
let's do it. And they did exactly what the Chargers did,

(43:40):
which is does it totally fit a need? Maybe not,
but best player available, it's not close. Speaking of best
player available, Derwin James was available in the l A
Chargers gobbled him up. Uh. This is what it sounded
like when the commissioner made the announcement, we're the the
two thousand and eighteen NFL Draft. The Los Angeles Chargers

(44:04):
select Derwin James, defensive back Florida State. Derwin James joined
just in the Dug Gottlives Show. What was that like
to hear? That was a great man, That was amazing
finning here that my name called man, that was amazing.
Where do you think you were going? Oh? Man? I
didn't I didn't actually know exactly what I was going.

(44:26):
I kind of thought I was going in the top ten.
But you know, things happening, and you know, I'm happy
that I'm a Charging man. Oh no, listen, I'm I'm
actually a Charger fan. So I'm super happy that that
that you're going there. But what what what did you did? You?
Did you say something? Did you did you did you
break wind in somebody's football office? Like what happened that
all of a sudden you were still available when the

(44:46):
Charges you're selected? No, man, is one of those things.
A lot offensive linement went this year, a lot of
quarterbacks went this year. You know, I'm just happy that,
um man, I got to it. I end up on
a great team with a great defense already with a
great coach. So no, I'm happy. Okay, So how did
you How did you maintain your composure when go ahead? Oh?

(45:08):
I mean because I told my seven I'm always one guy.
It don't matter where you take that. Man, this is
what you do when you come in tay this league.
If you if you look at the NFL, man four
six four fifth round, six round, guys that are on
the top of the league. So it didn't matter where
I was picked that man, I'm just happy that I
was that I got that call and then I'm able
to you know that say that I'm in the NFL.

(45:29):
Do you think it had to do with the foot?
I mean remember sixteen you had the foot fracture? Was
it was it medicals? Is that why you slipped? No? No,
it wasn't. It wasn't medical. I was on state still issues. Man,
I don't I don't know man Derwin James joining us
in the Doug Gotlip show. You mentioned coming in What
what people I think don't know that are around the
Chargers is essentially their first and second round draft pick. Uh.

(45:53):
They red shirted last year right barely had Williams, he
barely played and fort Slamp didn't play a snap. So
you're coming in with a whole group of guys that
have read shirt around. What did what did Gus Bradley,
defensive coordinator tell you about his expectations for you just
coming in working hard and um she told me you know, um,
it's not too much pressure coming in and you know

(46:15):
the way he runs his system. Uh, he makes it
easier for young guys come in and play right away.
So and I feel like he has had a lot
of success at places with the jack Wars and with
the Seattle UM and even when he was in Tampa.
So I just feel like, um man, I'm coming into
a great system and just having guys like that around
me both and all those guys, I'm happy. I know,

(46:36):
you know Casey Hayward really well. You guys worked out
together in Orange County. How much how much of that
are you gonna drawn in terms of where you live
and the things you should do? Oh? Because man, he's
he's a guy that's a that's a that's a pro um,
he's an all pro corner, and um why not get
advice from a guy that's doing at a high level
on the level I'm trying to reach. Man, I'm just

(46:57):
happy to have somebody on the team, like on my
team like that. Besially in the secondary. Look, everyone says
you're in Alpha. I know you're close with Jalen Ramsey.
You're gonna talk as much trash as Jalen Ramsey. Oh, Man,
I don't know, man, Jayens Daylan. I don't know Jayden
on Another Love, But you know, I kind of let
my play duehen I'm talking about on the field. You know.
I'm not gonna be a mouse. I'm not gonna be quiet. No,
you're gonna you're gonna feel me, and you're gonna hear me.

(47:19):
You're gonna listen. You're you're a guy from Florida, Okay,
born bred Haines City. We had you on earlier this week.
But this is in Florida, right. You don't need a
sweat towel everywhere you go. The weather is nice every
day here. Like, I don't know how you're gonna miss
the big bugs in the humidity of the South. Heg no, man,
that's why I came here to train. I love it
out here, man. I don't even sweat as much. Man,

(47:39):
in Florida. I walked to the mailbox. I sweat so man,
I'm happy. Man. I love the wet out here, man,
the mountains and everything. All right, listen, I'm gonna give
you a little tip here, Okay. The only place you're
gonna be able to get sweet tea without trying to
explain what sweet tea is is there's a chick fil
A right down the street from the facility. That's the
only that's the only spot in orange category be able
to go. Like, yeah, I want sweetie everybody else and

(48:01):
be like, wait, you want sugar in your tea, You're
gonna have to add the sugar. I know it's hard
to understand when you're from the South, but that's the
easy second. Yeah, things are open on Sundays except Chick
fil A, but that's the place you can get sweet tea. Hey,
welcome to l A. I know you're gonna bring that
South Florida, that South Florida walk to us. We appreciate
you joining us, Derwin James joining us in the Doug

(48:23):
Gottlieb show. That's like the Grid that and and we
talked about it with Joe Banner earlier. The Jets fell
into Sam Donald. Now, the Chargers didn't have to make
a trade. And that's the thing about the Jets. The
Jets trade was laughable, but it ended up working out
for him, working out for him. So but I do

(48:47):
like that. I do like that Jalen Ramsey mentality of
you you're gonna know I'm out there and the Chargers
kind of quietly putting together. The Rams have done it
not so quietly. John almosts Rams they're getting dudes right.
Last year went on and got dudes and there was
a dramatic turnaround. This year, we're gonna get big name
guys Chargers like, Hey, look, last year we drafted two guys,

(49:13):
one who barely played the other one who didn't play
a snap. Forest Lamp got injured one of the first
practice tourist. A c l gives him a guard And
I don't think he's more athletic when healthy than Quentin Nelson,
but they think he's in the Quentin Nelson category of
plug and play. Gonna be a gonna be a starter

(49:33):
for ten years, So gonna be fascinating to see. It's
it's crazy. It's one of those deals that he's like. Man,
if everyone says the Chargers get an a for last night,
why didn't somebody else draft Drwin James. Favorite part of
the draft coverage last night, Ryan Music. We're gonna have

(49:56):
to go with Ryan Shays here walking out and delivering
the pick um. You know, it's pretty inspiring. Yeah, because
we don't know if he ever walk in. Yeah, you
don't know he ever walk in. I know, I know
his goal is to try and play football again and
all those things, but just to see that he's at
least making progress towards hopefully living a regular life once

(50:16):
again is something that we're all just really hoping for
in the end. Do you do you believe that he'll
play football again? I do not. I I personally, I
know it's really hard for someone like him, who's probably
grown up always wanting to play football, and he's actually
lived his dream, so he knows what it feels like

(50:37):
to play in the NFL and he wants to recapture that.
But to go through something like that to where like
you lose the ability to walk for however long, to
then think I'm gonna put myself back into that situation
where that's a possibility. I just I can't imagine how
or why you would do that to yourself. You know,

(51:00):
we look, we'd all advise our friends not to do it.
But what if I told you you just let me,
let me try and relate to it because I didn't
play in the NBA and obviously didn't play in the NFL.
But let me just sometimes just doing it is Here's
what people always ask Like my actually my son asked
me um about not playing in the NBA, like why

(51:22):
didn't you play in the NBA? And I'll tell him like,
like I just you know, I had established reputation as
a guy who couldn't shoot, and I spent so much
of my time trying to figure it out that by
the time I figured it out, this career had kind
of taken off. And I don't know if it ever
would have happened, but all I ever really may Look,
what you really want to do, is you really want
to play in uh, you know, for a career in

(51:43):
the NBA. But the first goal was just just I
wanted to have my have an NBA uniform in the
locker for a real NBA game, Like what would that
be like to say I did it? And I still
I played professional basketball, I collected checks, travel around the world.
I did it. I tell kids all the time, like, look,

(52:06):
I'm not saying I'm the most accomplished guy. But with
the exception of playing a game in the NBA, everything
you've ever dreamed of doing pretty much done in basketball.
So you take that with and and it's really hard
to get even to that point. I lost the in
perspective of it. But my point is I understand what
it would be like just for me to play one game,

(52:30):
Like somebody said, like, hey, dude, you can play one
game in the NBA, that is, I would soak it
up out And I think if you're Ryan Shazier, should
you know you shouldn't? Of course not, because the first
thing is we're gonna remember Ryan she Ranjies was a
very very good player, I think, borderline great player becoming

(52:52):
a great player, But he's not gonna go down to
the Hall of Fame. We're gonna remember him as a
better player than even he was because he hadn't yet
gotten to that point. I think it wasn't a flawless
perfect player. Really good, really good was going to play
for a decade in that position with the Steelers, a
team that values linebackers, maybe more so than anybody in
the league. But if he doesn't play another snap, we're

(53:15):
gonna say like he was on his way to being
a Hall of Famer and then he was hurt. So
when you come back, if you're a shell of the
player that you used to be, that's gonna be our
lasting memory of you. Um, But I don't think that's
what it's about. So we would all advise him to
not play Like dude, Ryan shays here, you can be

(53:37):
a motivational speaker, you'll be a coach, You can write books.
You can just be happy that you fought your way
back to being able to do cross fit, you know,
and just be a play basketball and be a human being.
Right like exactly, we used to have perspective. But I
can tell you that the power of just hey man,
I just want to put on that how much shoulder
pads run out there? Here the crowd cheer. I want
to hit one more guy, hit one more guy. It's

(54:01):
a drug. It's a drug. And I completely understand that
it is ludicrous for a guy who was nearly paralyzed
or actually was paralyzed for report British time to to
to want to put themselves in harm's way again. But

(54:23):
I can tell you selfishly if you and I wasn't
putting myself in harm's way, but if you said, hey, dude,
you can give up radio show, TV career and in
you know, the start of next season you'll play one
NBA game. I would do it. I'll do it for
one game. I do it, no question. I get you

(56:40):
The Arizona thing is gonna be interesting, right because Sam
Bradford got twenty million dollars to be their starting quarterback. Um,
this is a second time in was it three years
that Sam Bradford has gotten a new deal only to
have somebody drafted to ultimately replace him. And then the
same thing, the same exact thing happened to his backup,

(57:01):
Mike Glennan. So Arizona is gonna have three quarterbacks. Josh
Rosen is gonna be the one thing you josh Rosen
appears to be the most ready to play. But Rosen,
by all accounts, I'm not gonna say he's fragile, but
he's fragile. You know, he's somebody that he has. He's
been hurt all three years. He's playing at U C

(57:23):
l A. So you're gonna want to add some strength
to him in addition to getting him up to speed
with a new offense. They're putting it in Arizona. That said,
it's a great set up for you when you have
David Johnson is coming back fully healthy, you'll have Larry Fitzgerald,
and you're getting to play indoors, which is a a

(57:44):
quarterback stream asking playing indoors, there's a there's a massive
difference in playing in good weather or playing indoors as
opposed to playing in Cleveland or Buffalo or in these
other places New England where arm strength Green Bay arm
strength really really matters. And it's not that Joshua and
doesn't have a very good arm. I just wouldn't say
he has an absolute howitzer. You know. But the Rosen

(58:08):
thing is gonna be interesting because, look, you have two
other guys that I'm sure we're expecting to get snaps.
Bradford's expecting to play. Great dude, but he's expecting to play,
and Rosen expects to play. Then you have Baltimore, and

(58:29):
I remember that the Joe Flacco is the elite debate.
Everybody had it, everybody had fun with it. Sometimes it
went a little too long and we discussed a little
bit too much. But what I what I think is
interesting here is if you've listened to anybody talk about
the Ravens coaching staff, they'll all like, connect the dots.

(58:51):
We should have seen this all along. We should have
known that the Ravens were going to go out and
get a Lamar Jackson. Because if you look at the
guys who are on the coaching staff with the Baltimore Ravens,

(59:11):
you can kind of draw a conclusion there that, yeah,
they they know how to deal with an athletic quarterback.
Marty morning Wig was with the Jets when they had
Mike Vick. He's the offensive coordinator, the assistant head coach
tight ends coaches Greg Roman, he was the offensive coordinator
with the San Francisco for the Niners when they had

(59:32):
Colin Kaepernick. Up. It makes sense there, that's it, it's done.
They're gonna have They're gonna have Lamar Jackson as their
starting quarterback. Now, remember he also had Marty morning Wie.
Also had Donald McNabb, Steve Young, Jeff Garcia, and Brett Farve,

(59:54):
all guys that can move around a bit. So you
have people saying, well, look, you got r G three already,
you got he's gonna he can be the backup to
Lamar Jackson. You got Joe Flacco. They're ready to move
on for Flacco. You know, we can talk about McNabb

(01:00:14):
and Mike Vick and how the an r G three
and how that fits Lamart Lamar Jackson. Right. If I'm
Joe Flacco, I'm sitting there going, hey, dude, you know
I want a super Bowl? Right, and guys in the
pocket win the Super Bowl. Now, I'm not here, and
he hasn't. When was the last time they had a

(01:00:36):
big time running back when they had Steve Smith? He
used Steve Smith. They're in a hyper competitive division, and
they have had age, and they have had injuries, and
they have had dysfunction, and they have had bad draft picks.
And I look, I'm not Mr I'm not a Joe.
I'm not the captain of the Joe Flacco fan club.

(01:00:58):
But Joe Flacco was solid. He's the same guy he
was when he won the Super Bowl as he was
the year before. You know, he's mid twenties and touchdowns,
load of mid load of mid teens in interceptions. That's
who he is. And you can roll with that and
you can win with that because he can make every throw.
And sure he didn't have a good year. The Ravens

(01:01:18):
didn't have a good year. But if I was him,
I would be hot at this idea that Lamar Jackson's
gonna come in and you surp him almost immediately. Hey,
he was available that late in the first round for
a reason. Here's Lamar Jackson after getting drafted, looking forward

(01:01:39):
to being a ring Everything got him. They don't get
a Super Bowl out of leader leader Joe fla is like,
you mean one of these, right, you you mean one
of these? Now? They got Hayden Hurst, who I think
is is great for Joe Flacco or Flacco is liked.

(01:02:00):
I got a big, old pass catching tight end from
South Carolina. Love it all in. But like, if I'm Flacco,
and this is the problem. When you have first run,
you trade up. You have first round draft picks. Those
guys have to come in and start in order for
you to be good. And they drafted a backup. Either

(01:02:21):
they they drafted knowing Joe Flacco was gonna be a
backup eventually, or that more than likely Lamar Jackson would
be back. They've already come out and said Lamar Jackson
is a quarterback. Period. I don't think anybody said otherwise.
But you'd be stupid to not use him in some
form or fashion. Of course, you could use him and

(01:02:41):
bring him in and run wildcat. I do think that
he's a really good backup immediately if you want to
put in some of the packages, some of the zone
read packages that we've seen other teams, other teams, uh run.
But Lamar Jackson's a long way away from being Joe Flacco,
as Malai to Flacco is, and he has every reason,

(01:03:03):
every reason to think. Man, that sucks that they're bringing
that they're they're unsettling the apple cart, putting additional pressure
on me. We're just trying to get this thing right. Uh.
The the this tax season, your your refund does go further.
Thanks to the Freelaner Tool program. You can choose them

(01:03:23):
over a hundred specially tools to help you get the
job done right, stopping to Day, getting the zone, auto zones,
bringing Dan Buyer, just programming note, Ross Tucker Puller, Offensive Lineman,
Guy's own show in Serious XM does games, Westwood One
does a great job as an awesome podcast. Ross gonna
join us just after day when you got Dann Well
the NFL Draft. Doug will resume tonight with the second
and third rounds. But the surprise in the NFL isn't that.

(01:03:46):
The surprise today is that Cowboys Today and Jason Wittnes
is expected to announce his retirement after fifteen seasons. While
some may have been caught off guard, not so much
in Cowboys Land, according to Executive vice president and CEO
OH Steven Jones. I mean, I wouldn't say caught off guard.
You always know these things can happen, and of course
when we do do our restructures, they're done in a

(01:04:08):
way that if something like this happens, it's certainly not
a ben't heard us now reports a Wit is likely
to take an analyst job on Monday Night Football. As
for the NFL Draft, You'll see you tonight on Fox
starting at seven Eastern as the draft resumes with these
second and third rounds, and the NBA Raptors and Wizards
will play tonight at seven o'clock Eastern time, but Washington
one f forward Otto Porter Jr. He is out a

(01:04:29):
definitely following a surgical procedure on his leg. Raptors are
up three too in that series. Calves up three two
and in Indianapolis against the Pacers tonight eight o'clock Eastern time.
Jazz home to the Thunder and Salt Lake at ten
thirty Eastern comes holding on to a two one edge
on the Brewers and the Seventh with no Chris Bryant again,
but he's expected to return to the lineup tomorrow. Doug
hasn't played this week after he was getting the head

(01:04:50):
with a pitch last Sunday. Super super super scary stuff. Uh,
the wit and stuff is interesting. I had heard the
wit and stuff, but the timing is asking, and I guess,
you know, God blessed me told him, you know before
before the Dallas Cowboys drafted today where they can draft
a tight end, and I kind of think I know

(01:05:11):
who they'll be looking at both tight end and wide receiver.
But it's I would also guess that he didn't get
off of the job from ESPN until the last couple
of days. That would be my guests like to anybody's like, well,
the timing stinks, Yeah it does. But you get offered
Monday night football or playing of the Dallas Cowboys and
you played for fifteen years, you go take the money

(01:05:34):
night football game. Don't believe me. Ross Tucker joins us.
He's a former offensive lineman NFL Earless for NBC Sports
series x M Westwood Want. He joins us on The
Doug Gotlip Show. Got a great podcast as well, right,
My Like, I was surprised they brought him back, that
they didn't kind of help usher him out the door,
considering how much he struggled kind of running and I
know you don't have to run a ton when you

(01:05:56):
have that much wherewithal you played that many years. But
makes a lot of sense if you can get money
at football in it. Yeah, I don't know how you
turn that down. I mean, especially you know he's got kids,
he knows the deal. Fifteen years, he's already going to
be a Hall of Famer. I just don't you know,
how much damage do you want to do to your
body with all the ct stuff that's come out. He's
a really smart guy. It's just when you really sit

(01:06:19):
there and you start to weigh it, I think it's
pretty much a no brainer for him. I do find
the timing of it curious because now here on day two, Doug,
if you're a team that wants a tight end, you're
jumping are part of the Cowboys because now you know
the Cowboys. I mean we already thought the Cowboys would
take a tight end and probably pretty high. So maybe

(01:06:39):
it doesn't change it that much, but I think it
makes it much more likely that they kind of have
to get one today that can help them next year.
So if you're any of these other teams that want
a tight end, make sure you jump up and put
it down. I don't think he did that many favors
by this news coming out, and I don't know that
he wanted it out. I don't know how it got
leaked what it did. Yeah, well it got leaked. I

(01:07:02):
think as ESPN decided that that's where they're going, that
would be my guess, right, And if you're the Dallas Cowboys,
I guess you're happy. But on the other hand, there's
there's probably a why didn't we know sooner? If if
we're surprised. I had heard it a couple of weeks ago,
but I obviously it only got out when it became
kind of close to official. All Right, So what does
that mean? The Cowboys chose uh to go linebacker instead

(01:07:25):
of going wide receiver. I assume that means they're going
tight end and wide receiver in the very near future,
didn't I think most people expect that to be the case. Yeah,
and it probably just depends on how, you know, how
the ball, how the board falls, which guy they'll end
up getting. I mean, there's a tight end from South
Dakota State, Dallas Goddard, who was literally named after the
Dallas Cowboys. Oh, that would be pretty funny. There's Mike

(01:07:49):
Kisiki from Penn's day, who made a ton of place
for the many Allions the last couple of years. And
a wide receiver. There's a guy that people thought they
might take a nineteen Courtland Sutton from sp You. So
there's a bunch of different options for them with those
two positions. I just the most interesting part of this
to meet Doug is, you know, the Cowboys are always
restructuring and they're pushing out guys contracts. They restructured within

(01:08:14):
like a month ago and gave him four million dollars
in a bonus now rather than a five point seven
five million dollars salary. So I don't know if I'm
the Cowboys and I'm kind of like, hey, uh, Jason,
we're gonna have to go ahead and get that money back.
I have to look and see what the grievance procedure
is there, But I don't think that they just gave
him four million dollars as a parting gift. Yeah, and

(01:08:35):
and as ESPN paying a guy who's never called a
game four million dollars, which would be which would be hot,
whichould be high in terms of what his you would
think his market value would be. He's not Gruden. It
that's less than Gruden, but that's more than anybody else
would make, who's a tight end coming straight out of
the game. But I guess you're worth what somebody's willing
to pay you. Ross Tucker joining us on the Doug

(01:08:57):
GTLI Show, Baker Mayfield goes one, what was your action? Well,
I understand why the Browns did it, but I don't
like it. I wouldn't addrafted him. I mean, I just
I'm conservative by nature. Doug I was an undrafted free agent.
So I love that he's a two time walk on.
I love his underdog mentality. I thought he was clearly

(01:09:18):
the most accurate quarterback. But you're talking about a guy
that he didn't have time to study the Chargers playbook
because he said he had to prioritize. But he's got
like a nine part tac you series and you know
much time I probably took to make that breath Farve
picture that they had. Are you kidding me? And by
the way, if it's about you know, prioritizing time, why

(01:09:40):
are you even going to the Chargers at all? If
you're not going to look at the playbook? I mean,
that's bad, TI man, I just I you know, I
just don't know guys that have a lot of success
at that position that do things like that. You know,
most of the guys I know would just never do that.
You know, Wentz and Brady and Russell Wilson, They're just
not like that. Now there's there's some guys that had

(01:10:01):
some success. I think Roethlisberger was like that when he
was younger. Um, maybe can I don't know, and maybe
Baker can do it, but it would be too much
risk for me. I'm a risk averse guy and I
wouldn't not want to take that on. Don't all right?
Did There's there's another guy kind of like that. Remember
when Josh Rosen, When Josh Rosen told us he didn't care,

(01:10:22):
he didn't care where when he where he was being drafted,
didn't didn't care at all. Um, this is the same Um.
Then last night he says that that nine teams ahead
of him made a mistake. I was, honestly, as these
picks were rolling by one, two or three, I was angry.
I was pretty piste off with these teams were passing
by me. But the second I got that call, for

(01:10:42):
some reason, all that went away and just a really
deep sense of motivation set in. I looked at it,
nine big mistakes made ahead of me, and I understand
that you just used his motivation. You're just saying what
you feel. But isn't that the real Josh Rosen, not
the one that said, don't care where I go, just
want to have fit? Well, we well we heard last night.
Was the real guy that can be very very polarizing. Yeah,

(01:11:04):
he he to me Doug. He would have been probably
the last of the group that I would take because
you look at it. First of all, the guy Doug
had two concussions last year that caused him to miss games. Okay,
he's a very smart kid. His mom went to Princeton,
dad went to pen as a renowned spine surgeon. I mean,
what if he gets a concussion in the preseason game

(01:11:25):
in August or September. I mean, what, knowing what I
know now, Doug, if I got three concussions in a year,
that'd probably be a rap for me, especially if I
just got a nice chunk of change just being a
top ten pick in the NFL draft. And obviously he
and his parents are very aware of the brain issue
concussion stuff. Then you have his college coach multiple times

(01:11:45):
basically made it pretty clear that football is not always
the priority for Josh. When you when you make a
comment like, Okay, he's great when he's here, and if
you can get him the solely work when he leaves
the facility, you know, Josh has a lot of interest.
But if you can really challenge him and give him
the I mean that those are red flags that that's
the reason why three other quarterbacks went before, and then,

(01:12:08):
by the way, obviously one last thing. He was the
face of U C. L A and clearly already a
pro prospect. And he wears a hat that has the
effort on it. I mean, forget even the political part
of it. He wears a hat that has the who
does that? Who? I mean that that's just such poor
judgment to me, that's three strikes and I'd be out
on Josh Rods and the concussions. What is college coach says?

(01:12:30):
And then just the decision making him wearing a hat
like that. You gotta be kidding me, alright, So uh,
I mean, the Jets could not have been more fortunate, right,
The Browns take Mayfield and take a risk. The Giants
choose The Giants never drafted the top five, and they
choose to pass on the top top quarterback on most
everybody's board. And it falls to the Jets who made

(01:12:51):
this bizarre trade where they over where they overpaid to
get only the third spot. And yet here the Jets are.
I mean, sometimes it's better to be, you know, lucky
than good, and they end up getting lucky. You're a
thousand percent correct. I thought it was a terrible trade
by the Jets to give up three top fifty picks
to get what might end up being the third quarterback

(01:13:14):
on the board. I mean, the Giants didn't think enough
of any of these guys, and the Broncos didn't to
take any of them, and the Giants could have gotten
anybody but Mayfield. They did up one of them, and
the Jets trade three top fifty picks two maybe get
the third guy on their board. But I guess you're right, dog,
I mean, all's well, that ends well. I thought Sam
Donald was clearly the best guy. He's clearly the guy

(01:13:35):
that I would want the most and I would sleep
the best at night if I took can. I remember
talking to him back at the U. S. Army Bowl.
You know, people say he's he's quiet and stuff. He
had some swag to him too. I mean he went
to USC after they already had a commitment from the
number one quarterback in the country. You know. When he
was in high school, played hoops, you know, play wide
receiver and linebacker. I just I really like Donald and

(01:13:58):
I think you're exactly right, as it worked out perfectly
for the Jets and they got a guy I thought
should have gone number one, and I thought the Giants
should take him the number two, and he fell right
to the Jets perfectly at three. Love what the Colts did, right, Like,
we need to protect him. We need to protect Andrew Luck.
We went and got Quinn Nelson. Feels like you plug
him in and he's going to be a starter for
ten years. No and that, and not only that, Doug,

(01:14:20):
They've got four picks today. I'm in the bus going
to the draft right now, by the way, I'm on
the media bus right now, Doug. And they have a
police escort for us. I forgot how awesome police escorts were.
Police escorts are very very underrated. I need more police
escorts in my life. But anyway, quit Nelson. He's an
escort for Andrew Luck. So the course with that jet strade.

(01:14:41):
They have four picks today, and they got the guy
I thought was the best player in the draft. And
the thing that people don't realize, Doug, I try to
tell them is when you have a bully like cat
on your offensive line that permeates not only throughout the
whole offensive line, put through the entire team. You need
that enforce her being the guy that the d lineman

(01:15:02):
and linebackers are kind of looking around like where are you?
Where are you? Like I don't want to get my
buckets by him. It's almost like when you have a
running back, I could all start running people over. When
you have a guy out there like a Logan Mankins
or a collect Ossemily or guys like that that are
really out, they're kissing people's But I think it had
an impact on the entire team, and that's what Nelson
can bring to the Colts. If you're Joe flacc are

(01:15:25):
you pissed today? Say that one more time here, Joe Flack,
are you upset today? I mean, look, I know they
got him a tight end, but they also went and
got Lamar Jackson and it kind of diverts attention and
puts a little bit of pressure. If you're Flacco, are
you upset with the Lamar Jackson pick? Yeah? I mean,
how how can you not be? I yet to find
a guy who is happy when a team drafts a

(01:15:46):
guy to take his job and now he has not
played as well. The thing is interesting to me about that, though,
is this is the last year with any guaranteed money
in his deal, So Flacco has a has a way
of you know, rising to the occasion when he has to.
And I wouldn't be surprised if he goes out and
has a really good year and then puts the Ravens
ain't kind of a tough position. But no, I mean,

(01:16:07):
you take a quarterback in the first round, you're and
you trade up to get that quarterback in the first round,
you're basically saying we're gonna move on to the drill
Flacco at some point. It's just a matter of when.
And it's fascinating because Lamar Jackson is so different from him.
I wonder how they'll use him this year. I like
the idea of just giving Lamar a package just so
that every week de TONSI of coordinators have to be

(01:16:29):
worried about him coming out, like you know, like Cordell
Stewart did back in the day. Give me, give me
the one player who you'll be most. You think, well,
we'll have the best, the biggest impact on their team.
They'll be drafted today. Darius guys Um. I'm a huge
Darius guys fan. I have been. He played in the
Army Bowl a few years ago as well. I think

(01:16:50):
that you know, whatever happened with these interviews, I think
that's why he's fell in the draft. Either people think
he's lying or they don't like it he told the truth.
I don't know. I don't know which one it is
right that they're either mad that he lied about these
book By the way, Doug, who lies about that? Like
that's a weird thing to just make up, isn't it?
You know about what questions he was asked. I personally
think it was more likely that he got the words

(01:17:12):
from somebody, Hey, this is not good for the NFL.
You need to say it didn't really happen when they
call you. That's the much more likely scenario. I think
part of that is why he fell. But you, dude,
the guy average seven point six yards to carry at
r s U. I thought he was better than four
net a couple of years ago. But it was awesome.
A lot of people, a lot of people have have

(01:17:32):
have said that, Hey, uh, I enjoy obviously enjoyed talking
with you, love your work, enjoy the draft. May do
a great job, thanks for joining us, no problem, think
you does. Ross Tucker does an awesome job for serious sex.

Auto Zone. We always play for you something we heard
earlier on Fox Sports Radio or Fox Sports TV. This case,
it's Colin Coward talking about the end of an era
in the NFC West. Last night's draft was actually about
watching one end. Seattle's Pete Carrol's sixty six years old

(01:19:03):
last year in his contract. Years ago, when Pete Carroll
was rolling Legion of boom. This division had Jeff Fisher
and Blame Gabbert and Jim tom Seula and case Keenum
and Drew Stanton and Colin Kaepernick. Pete Carroll wakes up
this morning and it's got Sean McVeigh, Kyle Shanahan, Jared Goff,

(01:19:26):
Jimmy Garoppolo and now Josh Rosen, three elite quarterback talents.
So many people look at that first round is where
the dynasty begins. I think it's where Seattle's ended. Seattle's
may well end or may well have ended because of injury,
because of dysfunction, because they never had an offensive line.

(01:19:47):
But Jim Harbaugh used to be in this division, and
didn't they play in the Super Bowl? Ryan Um, I've
never been a big Jeff Fisher guy, but if you
really want to go back to it, Jeff Fisher had success. Again,
it's one elite team during his time with the Rams.
John Romis, you're a Rams fan, who is the one
really good team that the Rams would be competitive with
and even beat during their down years? That would be

(01:20:08):
the Seattle Seahawks. I believe so as well. Bruce arians
was seen as an offensive mastermind, wasn't he? And he
had a borderline Hall of Fame quarterback in Carson Palmer
the last five years or so. Granted there were some
years with injury, but they had Larry Fitzgerald, had David
Johnson as well. So I'm not saying that Colin is wrong.
That the Seahawks are going to go through a rebuild mode,

(01:20:30):
very very well possible, But I don't know where all
of a sudden, you know, Cole, Look, I think Garoppolo
and Kyle Shanahan are the real deal, Okay, but they
won five games in the entire season, right it's a
it's a it's a rebuild job. And they lost their
middle linebacker maybe forever because of some domestic violence thing

(01:20:51):
which they're investigating, and they haven't replaced him as him yet.
And we've only seen Garoppolo start what is it, seven
games in his entire career before we crown him. Joe
Montana part du uh Rosen, by the way, is their
third quarterback right now. The Cardinals are in fact rebuilding,

(01:21:16):
and they have a completely unproven head coach who did
a great job defensively with Carolina Panthers, but it's not
an offensive head coach. Also, uh Tom talsco general manager
of the Chargers and a personal friend of mine. Apparently
his team with Colin Cowherd to keep me out of
the Chargers draft room, unlike Cowherd, who got to be

(01:21:38):
in it this year. By the way, Gottlieb is going
to complain that you didn't let him in. Don't listen
to him. He's not a football guy. He's a basketball
guy faking as a football guy. So don't let him
into that room next year. Tom. I'm just warning you
he's he's a basketball guy. Basketball guys are different. US
football guys gotta stick together on this stuff. One media

(01:22:00):
personality in the draft room and now we're an open
the floodgates was not going to talk to me ever. Again. Uh,
that's interesting because how is caw calling gallhardy football guy? Right?
Like he played high school football where we have no
video of it, no tracking of it, somewhere um in

(01:22:20):
the state of Washington. Like I played more football growing
up than Calherd did. Man, that's the trick to radio,
especially the trick before there was Internet. Just say you're
a football guy and you become football. There is actually
a person I know back at one of my old
Stomper grounds who says, like I said, I'm a football guy,
football guy, football guy. We called him. We called him

(01:22:43):
four four because he said he ran a four four.
Michael Lombardi joins us up coming next, did the Browns
blow it? We'll discuss from the Doug Gotlip Show? What
Up Doug Gotlip Show? Fox Sports Radio. Look, I think that, um,
let me get to Josh Rosen, give you a couple
of thoughts on Baker Mayfield, and then I believe Michael

(01:23:04):
Lombardi is gonna stop by. He's got a great podcast
called GM Street and the Ringers Podcast. Former general manager,
He's worked for all the big boys. He's in the
addition to being a general manager, he's worked for all
the big boys to Bill Belichick, Bill Walsh, Al Davis, uh,
the Browns, the Patriots, the Niners. He's worked for him obviously,
done TV and has this great pod. He'll give us

(01:23:26):
his thoughts, and he's got a new book out as well.
Uh So we we'll get to him in in a
second when he joins us. But look, let's just start
with the Rosen thing, because it's not whether or not
Rosen is successful. It's please don't tell me and Ross
Tucker joined us last hour, and Ross Tucker is like, look,

(01:23:47):
you know, he's got a parent that's a spine that's
a spine specialist. He's had a concussion. When people say
he has other interests outside of football, and I tell
you that there are people in football that are worried
about his body holding up. You draw the conclusion whether
it's the shoulder that stopped him from playing tennis, or
shoulder that he missed time with his sophomore season, or

(01:24:09):
whether it's his the concussion that he suffered last year.
There is the thought that, like, he's got other interest
in life, walking away from football is not that hard
for him, whereas other guys you want a guy with.
But that's only the durability is part of it. The
other part too, It is this personality thing. And you
can tell me all you want about who you are

(01:24:31):
in the three month lead up to the NFL Draft.
Remember this is Josh Rosen who before the NFL Draft
said this, Dave is not bossible in my game is
to go to the right team because that success is
long term. I mean, I'd rather have Tom Brady's career
have four year Fred. It's it's a very interesting point,

(01:24:53):
rather be Tom Brady. Okay, I get picked. It's about fit. Huh. Okay, Well,
Arizona clearly wanted you, right, they traded up to get you,
so it's about fit. Right. Then last night some of
the real Josh Rosen came out. I was, honestly, as
these picks were rolling by one, two or three, I
was angry. I was pretty piste off at these teams
were passing by me. But the second I got that call,

(01:25:13):
for some reason, all that went away and just a
really deep sense of motivation set in. I looked at it.
Nine big mistakes made ahead of me, nine big mistakes.
Rosen has this way, And I don't know if it's
a lack of self awareness, but it's cool to talk
about how you're motivated. Totally cool. Leave it there, okay,

(01:25:35):
But then to go nine big mistakes. Now you're casting
shade on somebody else's shine, right, Nine other dudes that
are celebrating the greatest moment to this point in their
athletic lives, and you're like, mistake, mistake, stake, mistake, mistake.
You know why all better. The reputation that Josh Rosen

(01:25:56):
has is is established out of time. He was at St.
John Bosco, super talented quarterback at a big time football program.
He left. Everybody's like, man, he's awesome. Do you like him?
Not really? U c l A. There's a reason. You
can read into whatever you want. There's a reason. The reason.
His coach at U c l A is like, he's awesome.

(01:26:17):
Would you take him number one? No? I would not, No,
I would not. Josh Frozen is exactly who you think
he is. And it came out last night after the drift.
And then there's the Baker Mayfield thing, which I just
feel like the Browns tried to get cute. I think
they tried to outsmart the room. I do, and you couldn't.

(01:26:40):
You might not. You might say, okay, well, first round
first pick Baker Mayfield. A lot of people liked him.
It's a neck up position. He plus, he's accurate, he's
a winner, he's tough. He fits Cleveland like Okay. If
that was the case, though, why did they try and
get cute With Denzel Ward Chubb staring you in the face.
See the better prospect hell Quintin Nelson is a better prospect,

(01:27:03):
but Chub would give you two dynamic young pass rushers
for the next ten years and just try to get
cute that. I think they thought they were smarter than
everybody else. That'd be my assessment. But I haven't spent
my entire professional life in the front office like Michael
Lombardi has. He's got an announced, he's got a new
book out, he's got outstanding podcast. He joins us on
the Doug Gotlip Show here on Fox Sport trait. By

(01:27:24):
the way, the book is called Gridiron Genius. What was
your reaction to Baker Mayfield going number one? You know,
I I worked it backwards, and for me, if you
would have asked any personnel director in in September who
would be the top pick in the draft, Baker Mayfield's
name never comes up. And so when you work that way,
and then you start understanding his senior season in which

(01:27:45):
you know, he played really well against Ohio State, the
level of competition in the Big twelve, to me, all
due respect to people that watch that that defense doesn't
shine very very effectively. You know, he's got the likes
of two Lane on his schedule. You know, he played
against the Iowa Estate in Kansas State, which were decent defenses.
And then when you put on the Georgia tape. You
really have to worry about Kenny make the throws in

(01:28:06):
the Georgia tape on third down from the pocket that
aren't easy throws, and I was concerned about it. You know.
To me, this this rise that he had along with
the Georgia tape makes me very skeptical. Now the Browns
see something in them that I haven't been able to
see on the tape, and uh, you know, it's good
for them, and so hopefully they can make this six
ft quarterback who's never really played under center operate and

(01:28:30):
throw the ball into a steady wind that comes off
Lake Area and handle the elements and we'll see. You know,
people say, well, you know, he's a lot like Drew Brees,
no time out. Drew Brees. True Breese beat Roger Federer
in tennis in high school. This is the kind of
athlete we're talking about with Drew Brees. Baker Mayfield walked

(01:28:51):
onto Texas Tech and as a freshman he had their
men this year. He was freshman all he was a
Freshman of the Year in the Southeast Conference. But he
was so effective that Cliff Klingsbury said to him, you're
gonna have to compete for the starting job with Patrick
Mahomes and he transferred to Oklahoma at that point. Yeah. Yeah,
and David's Webb too. David web actually beat him out, uh,

(01:29:12):
during that freshman year at at Texas Tech. It's a
great point, Mike, It's gonna be very interesting to see. Um.
I felt like the Jets they made a terrible trade
and ended up being incredibly fortunate yesterday. Are crazy to
think that one. No, I think they the bad trade
bailed him out. I mean, they could have stayed at six,
and they liked Josh Rosen. And I heard all you
said about Josh Rosen. I think that the Jets were

(01:29:34):
prepared to take Josh Rosen at at at three if
Donald wasn't there. I think they were going to do that.
And they were comfortable with him because Jeremy Bates, who's
the quarterback offensive coordinator at the Jets, is best friends
with Jet Fish, who coached Josh Rosen at U c
l A last year. So they felt that, you know,
they had the concerns that you indicated before I came
on that they were about Josh Rosen, but they thought

(01:29:54):
they could work their way through it. Look, you know
when you're desperates for a quarterback. You can believe anything, right,
you can work your way through all the problems. And
so they were. But this trade, you know, put them
in a precarious position. And then when the Browns took
Mayfield and the Giants took Barkley, which is a really
good pick, but Barkley, you know, taking a running back
that high is fascinating. You know, the Jets just stepped

(01:30:15):
right into Donald. Um, let's let's get to that giant steel.
You've worked with the best, You've been part of some incredible,
incredible moves on draft day, incredible foresight. Um, you're the Giants,
and he got Eli Manning. They think he's got something
in the tank. Some people do not think he's got
much in the tank. And they're gonna try and get
as much juice out of that orange as possible. They

(01:30:36):
got o b j for for the for at least
the near future. Um. Would you have gone Donald or
would you have gone running back? No, I might have
gone I would have probably tried to trade down if
I could have got something for it. But I would
have gone Ray Kwon Smith, Bradley chub or Nelson. I
think those three guys are going to go the Pro Bowl,
and I would have come our way with that. Now,

(01:30:56):
look I like, but I like, say Kwon Barkley. I do.
He's a good player. He really is. Okay, he is
a good player. But I don't need a Bentley at
running back. I can I can drive a decent car.
I don't need to have the top of the line
car at running back. I can find Sonny Michelle picked
that thirty one is a really good running back, Okay,
and he's gonna come in and give the Patriots everything

(01:31:16):
that that he has and in a combination of other players,
But you can't find linebackers like Rocan Smith. This is
a guy who's very similar to Derrick Brooks. And when
your defense is fast inside, especially with all the way
people throw the ball in short coverage, you can't get
to the quarterback because the ball comes out too quick,
so you need speed underneath. Rocan Smith can make those plays.

(01:31:37):
This is what alerted you to Baker Mayfield when you
watched Georgia and Baker Mayfield had to play against a
fast team and NFL style of defense. It was not
easy for him. The speed of the game gets better
and all of a sudden, you've got to step it up.
I thought Rocan Smith was great. I think Quintin Nelson's
going to go to the Pro Bowl. Plus, you've got
to ask yourself when you're picking second in the draft, Okay,

(01:31:58):
you just can't look at it as how he fills
your depth chart. You have to say to yourself, work
backwards again. Where will I be on the second contract?
And and Nelson's second contract? You would be very lucky
to have a guard for five years. You know Aaron
Andrew uh Andrew Norvell went for sixteen million a year,
so you feel like, Okay, that's a good deal. Shub's

(01:32:18):
second contract, you know that's a good deal. And Smith's
second contract, you know that would be a good deal.
The running back, you don't even know if you're going
to get a second contract. That's why I wouldn't have
done it. It's it's it's really amazing. Michael Lombardi joining us.
The new book is Gridiron Genius. The podcast now that
doesn't come out until September, though, Doug, that's okay, we're gonna,
we're gonna, we'renna keep pumping and we're gonna have you
on that way, we can keep having you on. So

(01:32:40):
so the people have run plus download the podcast GM Street.
It's funny. I got a text, uh yesterday from a
college coach. He's like, all these quarterbacks and he was actually,
he's like one of a guy who's coached and if
NFL caliber quarterbacks and he's like, dude, this is not hard.
Roquan Smith, Bradley Chubb and Quentin Nelson, those guys are animals.

(01:33:00):
Those guys, you know, put him, put them in pen
for ten years and you're starting lineup, They'll be in
Pro Bowls. Uh, what about the Chubb deal? Though? Playing
in the three four? I know there's a lot of
four man fronts now, especially um the way football is
played in two thousand eighteen, but it is. It is
a dramatic change for somebody who's always played with their
hand in the dirt. Well, I think chubbs, you know,

(01:33:21):
on one side of the ball. Look, they're gonna end
up when you're in nickel, you're gonna have four down guys.
And if he could move around, and he's athletic enough
to move around. You know, I've always been a defensive lineman,
uh aficionado. I would draft seven of them if I could,
but the way the game has changed, I think I
would have picked Rocon Smith over Chubb because you can
move Rocan Smith around and put him in different places

(01:33:41):
and blitz them. He can cover, he can you know,
he can make plays from sideline to sidelines. So you know,
it's a unique way the game has gone now. But
with Chubb going to Denver, the protection is always going
to be slid to Valan Miller, and this gives Chubb
a chance to be isolated one on one, whether it's inside,
on the guard, whether it's over a tackle. Chubb can
play anywhere along the line, and that versatility gives you

(01:34:03):
a chance to match him up against the worst lineman
because you know Miller can beat the best one. Didn't
the Saints massively overpay for Marcus daven You know, I look,
I I think the Saints. I said this on my podcast,
Sean Sean Payton has always followed the Bill Parcels model
of how to build a team. And so what Parcels
does after every year is he puts three He has

(01:34:23):
three categories of players. We must have this category of play.
We must have this player to compete next year. We
want this category of player to compete next year, and
we need this player to compete next year. And when
when Sean said publicly we must have a defensive vent,
I knew he was putting a defensive end in his
must category. So he paid a price that he thought

(01:34:45):
he had to do to get that must crossed off.
I'm with you. I think he overpaid. I thought he
was going up actually to get Lamar Jaccent because usually
when you pay a one next year, you're going for
a quarterback. I really think Doug, I really think the
rant the Chargers made a huge mistake and not coming
back into the first round and trying to pick Lamar Jackson. Well,
a lot of people think they're gonna get quarterback. Today.

(01:35:05):
I was told he's he's really struggled with the white
board with with the Chargers. But um, but and so
maybe that gave them the he b G. So you
like him in Baltimore? Do you think that? I think
that's a great move. Look, I think this when you
take look one thing about when you take a quarterback.
Quarterbacks are like baseball stadiums. You have to configure your
team around their talent base. And if the Chargers bring

(01:35:26):
out bring out Lamar Jackson, and expect him to learn
their playbook time out. He's not Philip Rivers. That's not
what he is. You have to divide an offense that
fits him now. I know when he went and talked
to New England they were not as concerned mentally about
what he could could come back with. I know when
he talked to some other teams they weren't. However, they were.
If you want to keep the offense the same and

(01:35:46):
you expect him to come in there and do it,
I'm sure you're probably gonna have some concerns. But I
think in Baltimore, look, they got to get away from
Joe Flacco's contract. It's not getting any better next year.
They can dump it with no guaranteed money, and they've
got to rebuild their offense. They need to be Moosa.
They've been trying to answer their offense with signing every receiver.
I mean, they're actually putting together the two thousand and
twelve Pro Bowl team there. All they need is Dez

(01:36:07):
Bryant to sign and they'll have that complete. So I
think they need to have a wide receive. I think
they need a quarterback that can generate some plays on
our own because they can't do it with their skill players,
I agree with, but that that brings out the why
not get a skill player in that spot instead of
getting a quarterback in that spot? Well, look, I think
they gotta have an answer for you know, one thing
we know for sure, Joe Flacco can't play forever, and

(01:36:28):
Joe Flacco has got You've got to find a replacement
for him, and you've got to do it quickly. And
if you get Lamar Jackson out there, Look, here's what's
gonna happen, Doug. Lamar Jackson is gonna play in the
first preseason game, and he's gonna go to training camp
and those players of the Ravens, especially Terrell Suggs, is
gonna watch this guy and he's gonna say whoa and
the team is gonna want him to be successful. This
is a huge pick for Baltimore because they can change

(01:36:50):
the dynamic of what they're doing quickly and they can
compete quickly. Derwin James falls to the Chargers the same
charges you were talking about should have gotten a quarterback
that I mean, that's like a gift from Hunah. Right,
Why did he slip so far? You know, I don't
have an answer for that, I really don't. And there's
nothing off the field that was a concern. He's a
really good player, you know. It's funny. James was telling

(01:37:11):
people on his pro day that they asked him who
was the best player he's ever played against the A
C C or anywhere, and everybody expecting him to say
to Shaun Watson, and he said, Lamar Jackson by far?
How about that? But I I don't disagree with the
Chargers taken James here. I don't. I don't dispute that.
I think they took the best player. What I have
a problem with the Charges is not being aggressive and

(01:37:32):
coming back in a round. If they pick Mason Rudolph today,
I think they think they have the answer for Philip Rivers.
I don't think that's the case. I like, I'm an
oklahomasday guy. I tend to agree with you. I don't
you know, now he doesn't. He's better and warm weather,
which you always be in warm weather, But I just don't.
I don't think he has it. I think he's mechanical.
I think I think he doesn't have the anticipation of throws.

(01:37:52):
He plays in a seven on seven offense and when
he's protected and he has a clean pocket. See the
Southeast Conference, the Southwest Conference, or the Big twelve, whatever
we wanna call it. Now, there's not a lot of
pressure on the quarterback and so it's easy throws and
he's running an offense where it's just four verticals. And
James Washington, to me, is one of the best receivers
in this draft. He makes plays like I can't see,

(01:38:14):
and I think it really helped Routolf And I think
if somebody gets in, whether it's the Patriots or the
Chargers in the second round, I think they're gonna still
be looking for a quarterback in three years. I tend
to agree with you. Um okay, Uh, it's fast and
you bring up James Washington the Cowboys Now, No, I
need wide receiver. They need a tight end. With Jason
Witten retiring and going to to Monday Night football, obviously

(01:38:34):
it hits some bizarre timing. Uh. If you're them, what
do you address first, tight end or wide receiver? Well,
I get the best player. I mean, if they like Sutton.
I hear they like Sutton from SMU. I mean I
would draft to James Washington because I think he's dynamic.
I think he gives. When the balls in his hands,
you better watch out. So I would certainly do that.
But look, the problem with trying to fill the tight
end position in today's football is there's no real tight ends.

(01:38:56):
There's big receivers we call them f and so they
line up in the slot. Eric Ebron might have tight
end on his on his place sheet, but he's really
a big receiver. The same thing, the same thing with
the with the Kid Ingram that the Giants drafted last year.
They're not tight ends. They can't control the end of
the line and you can't run the ball strong side
when they're in the game. You have to find a
guy Witt and gave them the opportunity to be able

(01:39:19):
to control the under the line. He could be a
motion guy. He was versatile. He could play hy which
is on the end of the line, and he could
play f which is that big receiver. And in this
draft there's very few players like that. You mentioned the
wind in Cleveland. There's a strong wind in Buffalo, right, Uh.
Josh Allen obviously has a ball that can cut through
the wind. If you were going to formulate a plan

(01:39:39):
for that group in Buffalo, when to use him, how
to use him, especially when you have a G McCarron
up there. How do you develop Josh Allen? Well, look,
I think you got to build a team around what
his talent. You know, he's never gonna be completely accurate,
you know that. I mean you just have to accept
that you can improve his accuracy, but you're never gonna
make it to wear. It's a pinpoint. So you need
the receivers. You're gonna need guys with arm length. You're

(01:40:02):
gonna need guys that are large targets like Kelvin Benjamin.
You're gonna need guys, you know. And they have some
guys on their team. They have Rod Streeter that's big.
You know, he's over six three. Andre Holmes is big.
Is a Jones is six too. So they've got some
big receivers and I think that's what they need, to
have big receivers with long with long arm length who
can go and get the ball. You know, when Brady
throws the ball to Amadola, he usually has to put

(01:40:23):
it right in the right spot because Amadola is a
smaller guy. What he throws the gron he's got a
bigger strikes on the throw too. And I think that's
what the bills have to do around around Josh Allen.
The podcast is called GM Street Downloaded, listen to it,
and the soon to be released book is Gridiron Genius.
Will get to that another time. He's Michael Lombardi. He's
worked with and for all the big ones. He's kind

(01:40:45):
of to spend some time of this year in the
middle of the NFL draft. Michael, thanks so much for
joining us. All right, Michael Lombardi joining us, getting back
to his draft prep. The road ahead is bound. Takes
some money expected turns. Farmers Insurance can help you understand

(01:41:39):
Fox Sports Radio yeah, So I almost feel like I
should be like a I don't want to say pr person.
But the response you should have to criticism is not
that hard. It's not that a hard first. Okay, Look,

(01:42:03):
we just had Michael lombardion Um who's a former general
manager in the league, and we've heard this from several people, like, look,
nothing against Kwan Barkley, perfectly good running back, but he's
a running back like Kwon Barkley. I do. He's a
good player, he really is. But I don't need a
Bentley at running back. I can. I can drive a
decent car. I don't need to have the top of

(01:42:23):
the line car running back. This is I don't know
if the top of the line car running back. It's
if you're going to if you're gonna be driving off
road right, or if you're gonna be your carting around kids.
It's about safety and about size more so than about
how it looks. Do you want to make the car analogy?

(01:42:44):
How many running backs do we have to see be
successful who weren't drafted early as opposed to if you're
the you're the New York Giants. If you want to
go quarterback, often you get a chance at the heir apparent.
If not, you get a guy who I mean often
of line has been a huge issue. Pass rushing is
what the Giants have won two Super Bowls built throughout.

(01:43:06):
You had other options there. You could have traded down
and still got a quality running back or gotten a
quality running back today. So the appropriate response to that,
if you're Dave get I'm Dave Gentleman. The appropriate responses, Hey, look,
those people are entitled to their opinion. We're building our

(01:43:28):
football football team from maybe a different perspective. This has
been successful in the NFL. He can even draw on.
And I called the sake Kuon Barkley thing as soon
as I knew he was getting the job. I called
the sake Kuon Barkley thing because they said we're standing
by Eli Manning, which I would not have done. I
would have gotten rid of Eli man in Game five
last year. I told you guys that. But as soon

(01:43:51):
as I knew they're they're keeping him, they were doing
sae kuon Barkley. Why when he was in Carolina they
got rid of Steve Smith and they went all they
ran the football ground and pound great defense short in
the game, and that's how they won even with Cam
Newton as their quarterback. Guys do what guys are trying.
Replicates success, Replicate success. Heck, even if you really want

(01:44:13):
to get down to it, even Cleveland and what they
did yesterday, Baker Mayfield played in the exact same offense
as Pat Mahomes, who John Dorsey was part of the
team that drafted Pat Mahomes the year before. And they
think Pat Mahomes can work just like he worked in
that same offense. Anyway, that's how Dave Gentleman should have

(01:44:34):
handled it instead. This is what he said. You know
what I say about that, I think it's a croc.
At the end of the day, a great player is
a great player. He is a touchdown maker. He is
a threat to take it to the house every time
he gets his hands on the ball. Even like I said,
I think a lot of that's nonsense. I think it's
I think it's someone who had this idea and and

(01:44:55):
get into the analytics of it and did all these
running backs and went through the whatever. Jonathan stewarts in
his tenth year, and he's hardly lost anything. I don't
believe in it. I don't care who you take. I
think it all get hurt. Yeah, he referenced Jonathan Stewart. Okay,
this is a guy who is patting himself on the
back because they got to the super Bowl with Cam

(01:45:18):
Newton as their quarterback. And he's he's not wrong because
it did happen. I mean the Denver Broncos sitting there
and going like, hey, we can get we can get
to the Super Bow with an average quarterback. We got
there with Peyton Manning throwing nine testdown seventeen. The receptions,
they're not wrong, not wrong. But when you have the

(01:45:39):
opportunity to still get a quality running back, right, you're
telling me that se Kwan Barkley is that much better
than Jonathan Stewart. But the Jonathan Stewart would be available
today tomorrow, even there's that many good running backs that
are available. Instead, use all that and or just trade back.

(01:46:01):
But they didn't. I didn't pick up the phone, didn't
get value, didn't get appropriate value for the selection, even
if it works out anyway. He made fun of analytics
guys and guys at a computer and about agent. I
don't think that's what it's about. This tax season. Your

(01:46:25):
refund goes further at auto Zone. Thanks for the freeload
on tool program. You can choose from over a hundred
specially tools help me get the job done right. Just
so stopping to day getting the zone auto zone. It's
bringing Dan Buyer. Jason Witten can to retire on Dan Buyer, Well,
that's what we think. Reports saying he's headed to the boot.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says, before he goes there, it

(01:46:49):
will go to his family. He has some things to
think about and discuss with his family from a professional perspective.
He also told me that those things are going to
require a few more days of consideration, at least through
the weekend. So Jerry Jones say, no official announcement right now.
What reports they would and likely to take an analyst
job with Monday Night Football. I would guess what happened

(01:47:10):
today is he got offered the job today. You got
offered the job today. By getting offered the job today,
he um. He now has the decision to make in
terms of the signing bonus that he got the four
and a half million dollars. That's what Jerry's like, Well, listen,
you can retire, but you're gonna have to give us

(01:47:31):
back that four and a half million dollar check that
I just put in your account. Yeah, very very well.
That wasn't Yeah, it was pretty good. That was pretty good.
How do you write four and a half a million?
You go four million, five hundred thousand, You just write
four and a half million dollars. I wouldn't even know
how to write it out on a check. It's a
very it's a very very good question. These are first

(01:47:54):
world problems though. He has that. That's true. And Uh,
I do think that they take a good, had strong
look at James Washington. Everybody thinks they're gonna take court
and uh Sutton from SMU, But you know who are
they replacing in Oklahoma state wide receiver who's super competitive.
James Washington is the similar type of player and will

(01:48:16):
be available when they picked. Don't be surprised they go there,
or they might go with Mark Andrews, who's in Oklahoma
tight end. It's crazy if you look at the number
of players that played in at Oklahoma at Oklahoma State.
We're in the state of Texas to get an opportunity
with the Catholics. The NFL Draft second and third round
coming up seven o'clock Eastern time. It's some about ninety
minutes from now from Arlington, Texas, Texas Browns around the

(01:48:38):
clock right now at thirty three, then the Giants at
thirty four, then Cleveland again at thirty five. Now ESPN
is saying Antonio Gates wants to play football in twenty
eight team the tight end, just won't be doing it
with the Chargers, as the team has reportedly told him
they don't want him back next season. Cornerback by run?
What's that? Ye can't run? You know he had the
p D suspension? Was that two years ago? Um? Can't

(01:49:02):
run anymore? Cornerback and Byron Maxwell signed a one year
deal to go back to the Seahawks. Wizards host the
Raptors tonight seven o'clock Eastern time, but Washington without Otto
Porter Jr. He's out indefinitely following a surgical procedure on
his leg and at regularly this afternoon. Brewers down to
their last string. The pitch bind more on the way,
sweet last Cubs win, run fassing a high fastball, Cubs win.

(01:49:26):
They make it two in a row over Milwaukee, the
final today three to two. Now, those stupid Cubs and
the Cubs radio network beating my Brewers today. But yeah,
second straight day comes get one one one run win
over Milwaukee. One run games tend to come back to you,
tend to come back to you at the end of
the day. Here's Stephen Jones, Thanks Dan. Here's Stephen Jones
earlier today on one of five point three the fan,

(01:49:48):
the team on on the team without with you know,
we feel really good about our tight ends. Was what
we have on the roster, Slam and jar One and Rico.
That we've got some really good football players even without Jason.
So it's not like we felt like we're going into
a season, you know, without a good tied end. Well,

(01:50:11):
what's what's really changed is that, you know, look, it
was it was Tony's team, it was Romo's team, and
now it's Dax team, right, And the transition happened a
lot faster and a lot more suddenly early on than
people thought, as everybody waited for roman return from the

(01:50:34):
broken collar bone a year and a half ago, two
seasons ago. But Dez Bryant's out, Jason Wentin's out. Those
are the two favorite targets of Tony Romo. It is
now Dak Prescott's team. And I said this last year
and I mean it I don't think he's as good
as people thought he was. I just I am not

(01:50:57):
on team deck Um. And part of it is I
do hold what he was when he was drafted against
him in that he's not crazy accurate, he's not crazy creative.
He's solid and will make the right plays and does
have a big body and can run, but he's just

(01:51:18):
He's got a strong enough arm, but he's he just
lacks that creativity gene to where he'll make the back
shoulder throw and throw a guy open. The guy is open,
he can get him the football. But once he starts
to go through his progressions, he's not as accurate, and
there doesn't seem to be that creativity gene that Romo had.
Now Romo, there's a lot of risk with that reward,

(01:51:38):
and there'd be some untimely interceptions because of it, and
and maybe deck ends up being the better quarterback because
he has to be more solid. He doesn't have that creativity.
There's a reason they kept throwing days last year. There's
a reason they kept throwing a Witten last year because
those guys, even with that all of desert drops make

(01:52:00):
a yes. Uh so the Cowboys. One of the big
things is they're gonna get Ezekiel Elliott back presumably for
the entire season now that the suspension things over and
he should be healthy, no problems there. Do you think
the focus of their team should be rebuilding or retooling
the offensive side of the ball to give Dak more

(01:52:21):
weapons to work with, or should they put more of
the focus on let's get a good defense so that
that way we don't need Dak to do as much
like putting up almost thirty points a game in order
for us to win. Uh, well, well both, I mean,
but they started to address they addressed one of the

(01:52:41):
defensive needs yesterday going out and get in linebacker, right, So,
I mean that's that's a that's a big part of it,
a big part of it. Um. And they've changed out
some you know, Orlando Scandrick is gone, and so they've
changed out, they changed out coaches like this. This is
they've kind of gutted this thing a little bit quietly
in terms of what they're going to do, what their

(01:53:03):
expectations are to do defensively. But with Scandrick gone, that
changes things with a lot of new defense with but
you still had to Marcus Lawrence. We'll see if they
have David Irving, who I don't know if you guys
saw this that the girlfriend who accused him of abusing
her came out and apologized that she made it up
because she was really upset. So they have David Irving back.

(01:53:26):
You know, they haven't able to keep Shawn Lee healthy,
but they went out and drafted a linebacker. They've acquired
some people in free agency, I think. I think in
the immediate future. Now they need playmakers on offense. The
tight end you a wide receiver. Everybody knows that. So
do you want more defense? Sure, but they fixed some
of that in free agency. Baker Mayfields officially to Cleveland

(01:53:47):
Brown and you'll hear from him next Sorry, I just
had to pumme on Myron Medcalf on Twitter. Apologize to
Myron medcast, friends, family, love one, significant others. Madron medcats,
the writer for ESPN covers college sports. He wrote, Mike

(01:54:07):
Dom will leave South Dakota as one of the best
players in school history. He played high school ball in
a small town, Nebraska. He worked out at gym with
his mother each night, but he didn't know how he'd
get discovered. Then he latched onto and Kennaide AU team
did a you help him? I said a lot of
things wrong with au who but to use this one

(01:54:28):
example to make a larger point of silly. Dom's mom
was the all time scoring and rebounding leader at Wyoming.
Dad played in the NFL. Thousands of kids get discovered
by you. It's isn't the boogeyman that people let it on? Be? Anyway?
At a poem? One? Sorry? All on the day's work.

(01:54:49):
A lot to get to here. Uh what do you
get this weekend of music? Just gonna be hanging out,
Doug watching some NBA playoffs? You know? No baseball? You're
going to Angel Angels welcome in. Uh they got pretty good,
like the New York Yankees coming to down. I have
no plans to attend an Angels game. Alright, Ramos, what

(01:55:12):
do you got this weekend? Lucas has an early game
on Saturday, Sarah has a late game on Saturday. So
we a little softball and baseball going on for the
ramost Is this weekend? How early is early? Eight thirty?
I like, yeah, no, it's first game. Yeah, get out? Yeah?
Ours you're like again Newport Beach stuff. Ten o'clock and

(01:55:33):
one o'clock or the two game times. Well that's the
two possible ten or you do the one o'clock, so
like either one. Like your day is kind of fried. Yeah,
that one of clocks where you're like it's two midtime
where you can't do anything in the morning and then
anything you can't do anything, you know, because it wears
them out. The game is long. They get there an
hour before the games two hours, lose their attention span.

(01:55:54):
I don't know. I guess it does give me a
little time to do my own thing in the morning.
But Buyer, what about you. Buyer's gonna play some golf.
I know he's got radio this weekend. Yeah, Sunday morning,
got the radio show. May have to plant some flowers
and then dug of course game seven tomorrow night Bucks Celtics,
so that the big whoa plant flowers? Yeah? Yeah, you

(01:56:19):
know I do? Uh do you like to do a
little gardening around the place, and so tomorrow may remove
a place where we had some mulch and try to
brighten it up with some colors. Yes, spring has arrived
in the valley. Yes, what what what are the flowers
of choice doing? Gardenias? No, you know, we did some
marrowgolds in the back. Um, it seemed to be successful. Yeah,

(01:56:41):
but you don't have a lot of options, usually a
yellow or an orange. So so I don't know. We're
gonna We're gonna have to see did you do the
flower thing before your wife or is this always been
a thing for you? Yeah, I don't I don't mind
the yard work. I see you don't mind it. But
did you do it? Did you do it before you
had a significant other? I didn't have a place to

(01:57:02):
do it, that was the problem. Yeah, no, but I was,
you know, mowing the lawn when you're a kid, So yeah,
why not thumb there, blue green thumb. I like mowing
alone when I was in Connecticut. I like women. I
like the riding mower a lot. Uh visions of Can't
Buy Me Love? Remember that movie Patrick Dempsey. That was

(01:57:22):
back before he was m McDreamy. Let's get to the Press.
The Press. Also in the movie Summertime Fades Away is
another good gardening movie. I don't know. I just made
up that movie of Virginia. What you got, Dan? I
don't have any more made up movies, but I do
have Baker. You don't even watch movies. I know. That's

(01:57:43):
why I just made that one up. Summertime fades away.
It sounds like a good you've seen that, Yeah, I
know that's the one with John Willingham. Um. Baker Mayfield,
introduced today as the first overall pick of the NFL Draft,
met the media in Cleveland. What I've done in the past,
I had a lot of fun, great memories. But it's
starting fresh now, so everybody starts over. And that's what

(01:58:06):
I'm looking forward to doing. Baker Mayfield from walk on
the first overall pick. Okay, remarkable story and read a
story when we're groundskeeper, right, they say he's the Yeah,
he's the Karl Speckler of the National Football League. That's it.

(01:58:26):
Karl Spackler couldn't keep it together. You know you do
get that reference, don't you buyer? Yes? Okay, good caddyshack,
thank you. Um. I just I don't see it. I
don't see it. I've seen against the elite defenses some
of that lack of armed talent, and I do think

(01:58:47):
ultimately that catches up with you. Now. Mayfield has been
compared to Brett Farve and of course sent that side
by side photo that he and his family and friends recreated.
He talked about that today as well. That's a umbling
in comparison considering a Brett and everything that he's done
for the game of football. But the thing about him
that I love is his passion for the game, is

(01:59:07):
winning mentality, his toughness that I've always enjoyed watching. So
there's the Brett. He also had a just an absolute
howitzer for an arm and he never got hurt. And
he played an arrow to which turnovers worked at weren't
looked upon the same way they are now. And he
also was surrounded by incredible offensive staffs. So we'll see

(01:59:29):
ESPN s is Antonio Gates wants to play team, but
won't be with the Chargers because they won't bring him
back next season. Can't run, can't play, He's done. Veteran
quarterback Jay Cutler also expected to retire again after coming
out of retirement last year to play a season with
the Dolphins. Yea, and I think he probably kicked away
that opportunity to work for Fox and I don't see
them making that call again. Yeah, it doesn't. See my

(01:59:50):
kids going to fit will Earl Thomas fitting the Seahawks
plans for well, the Seahawks reportedly have two offers for
the veteran safety, who will make eighteen million dollars next season.
Salary isn't an issue Doug for ten, but the Seahawks
have been asking for at least a second round pick
for Thomas's services again. But he's but he's got to

(02:00:11):
rework that salary if he wants to get moved. Some
news from college football, the n c Double A has
ruled that quarterback Shape Patterson will be eligible to play
for Michigan next season after transferring from Ole Miss Ole Miss.
Michigan and the n c Double A working out that
situation that will allow Patterson to play this fall. They
will win the Big Ten. They will finally win games. Uh,

(02:00:32):
Jim Harball finally has a top level college quarterback to
work with. That's fake news. Oh, I thought we were
playing game time. Just kidding um. The Wizards will be
without Otto Porter Jr. For the rest of their series
with the Raptors, following up procedure on his leg. Game
six tonight between the Raptors and Wizards seven Eastern. By
the way, Raptors point guard Fred Vanvleets will play tonight

(02:00:53):
despite a shoulder injury that's kept him out of most
of the series. The leg procedure, what do we know
what it was? It was something that I can't pronounce.
So I was on his knee just he had a
contusion on his leg and there was they did something
with blood flow. So yeah, that's that doesn't sound good
if you don't have blood flow out next out indefinitely. Um. Finally,

(02:01:17):
Warriors guards Steph Curry took partner scrimmage today at practice,
closer to returning from his knee injury, team officially considering
him questionable for tomorrow's Game one against the Pelicans in Oakland.
He'll play? Was he shirt to was his skin? I
don't know. They had a big curtain separating the gym.
I'm not sure. Yeah, I I think I think you'll play.

(02:01:40):
I don't think he'll start. I think they'll bring him
out the bench and play with the limited minutes. I
think they understand Rondo and Drew Holiday, those guys are
no joke. You want to play against backups if you
can't bag it out there. And that was the press.
The COS game is gonna be interesting tonight. I mean,
how many times we've seen Lebron go into either Boston
or into Indie and just decide I don't feel like

(02:02:04):
playing a seventh game. They don't. I don't feel like it.
But some of this the statistical dominance, I get everyone, well,
this is the worst team. It's not the worst team
he's played with. This is not a bad team. Part
of it is their style. Most teams in the NBA
move the ball side to side, don't isolate. That's not
the Caps. And then defensively, the way they're guarded is

(02:02:28):
we we want him to try and make every shot.
We want to try and wear him out. And you
can say, dude, look at his numbers. It's not working.
The Pacers are a bucket here, a bucket there, a
way from sweeping the series. It absolutely is working. So
I think Lebron puts up huge numbers. I think this
would be one which you would not surprise me at
all if it didn't go back to Cleveland. But I

(02:02:50):
think it will be a very very close game because
they've all been they've all they've all been close. And
then I have heard that Mason Rudolph's dame being thrown
around early in the second second round as quarterback Oklahoma State.
I'm just I'm a fan of him. I'm a fan

(02:03:11):
of his play, I'm not a fan of him as
an NFL quarterback. He had great town around him, a
great head coach who put him in great position. He's
got a good arm. He looks the part, but you're
getting to the put him under center and bad weather.
He the Browns. They're exactly what we thought they were.
