Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Thread is a new hit podcast from Ozzi Media
that explores history surprising connections in order to discover how
one thing leads to another, like how movie moguls in
early Hollywood helped spark the Me Too movement. Today, get
it on I Heart Radio or wherever you listen. This
is the best of the dun Got Leap Show on
Fox Sports Radio. We knew that there were decisions going

(00:23):
to be made, and today was a big day, guys,
a big, big day of the NBA, and there were
future decisions that had to be made. But Lebron James
had a decision to make. And if he made a
certain decision, then maybe some of the other decisions wouldn't
come into play. So Lebron James had to decide by

(00:43):
the end of today whether he wanted to opt in
with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the final year of his
contract or opt out and become a free agent. So
Jonas and John essentially for Lebron James, that came down
to this deal or no deal, and he said no deal.
He has opted out of his contract and now Lebron

(01:06):
James is a free agent. You know, how have you
ever done this when you had CDs. When you were
a kid or when you were younger, you recorded a
song or on a tape and like if the glitch
was on the CD. There was like the Smashing Pumpkins
song I had recorded and it was a burn CD,
and there was a glitch on the CD because it
recorded wrong. And so anytime I heard that song on

(01:26):
the radio, I was expecting the same glitch like it
was part of the song, because it was so imprinted
in my brain that that's how it was supposed to sound.
Whenever I hear deal or No Deal music, because we've
done it so many times on this show, I am
just waiting for the next sound because I think it's
part of the bit now to be I'm gonna go
deal Dan John Rob He's a part of the soundtrack.

(01:49):
He's going to take that deal. Lebron James did not
take the deal to play is to at least opted
of his contract. And what this did today was it
basically took the Houston Rockets out of the equation. The realistically,
the only way that they are going to be able
to bring in Lebron James was through a sign in
trade with the Cavalier. Since Lebron didn't opt in, There's
really no way they can make the money work unless Cleveland,

(02:09):
unless Houston wanted to join the Big three and just
have three players on the court. That essentially that is
what happened with the Rockets. So the Rockets are kind
of out of it. The caven Leers Jonas, in my mind,
are out of it as well. Like I thought, it
was maybe a two team race, and I just I
wondered at Lebron James was gonna see how things we're
gonna go this week. I just now don't see him

(02:30):
signing any other deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and I
think that this is the first step to a breakup.
It would have been surprising in my mind if Lebron
opted in, But now that he has opted out and
Cleveland is still still a possibility, I just don't think
that their chances are realistically there. The more and more
we get closer to actual free agency, the less of
the less I think Lebron's returning to the northeast Ohio.

(02:51):
Think about this, There's a Calves fan out there who,
after Lebron left the first time, either burn the jersey
or sold it and said screw that guy. I want
nothing to do with him. I am out of the
Lebron James business. And then he resigned with the Calves.
So that guy went out and he bought another jersey
and said, all right, all right, I made a mistake,

(03:12):
but I'm not gonna get burned again. And now he's
going to be out of another Hunter box. Like hundreds
of dollars have been thrown away with Lebron James not
wanting to sign the extension with Cleveland. Yeah, it would
have only made sense to me. Cleveland's real shot here
was on the one year deal. Unless and and this
goes into a whole another conversation, there's something more in

(03:33):
the contract, whether it's an ownership steak or something else
along with it, and we can touch on that later
on as to why that's ever gonna happen in Cleveland.
But to me, this was really their chance, This was
their opportunity. Or he just sees it as as a
way to sign one final contract there. But I think
if you're a Calves fan, happy hours started early, and
it's not because you're happy about anything. You just need

(03:55):
to numb the pain because that guy's probably gone. Yeah,
and your point about ownership and I don't want to
us where you're going, but I think it probably has
something to do with Dan Gilbert. And there was a
report today that Stephen A. Smith said that Lebron and
Dan Gilbert uh did not get along, which I didn't
even know that was a report. I think I felt
that that was probably understood and we understood that that's
happened over the last three or four years and even

(04:16):
dating back to when Lebron first made the decision and
Gilbert wrote the letter reportedly I'm not a woman, but
thank you. Appreciate that will clear it up. The fact
of the matter is when the Cavaliers did the trade
to bring in Isaiah Thomas Ja Crowder and getting that
first round pick, I felt that that was the move.
When they dealt Kyrie irving to Boston was the first
step that Dan Gilbert was taking his team back, and

(04:37):
I felt that that first round pick was so crucial
because at the time he thought it was gonna be
a top three. Brooklyn plays a little bit better at
the top eight, but I think Dan Gilberts wanted his
team back at least for the last year. Why wouldn't
you you your team finally won a championship, bringing a
title to Cleveland, and you get absolutely zero credit at all.
In fact that as the Cavaliers win more and more,

(04:58):
Dan Gilbert's almost thought of less and us because Lebron
keeps on getting all of the all of the praise
and all of the the congratulations I'm doing well, and
he's the one that gets hype while Dan Gilbert is
just sitting by paying a hundred and thirty million dollars
in luxury taxes and getting zero benefit whatsoever. Yeah, And
it's one of those things to where people assume, at
some point during the course of their career, whatever job

(05:20):
they're at, that they can do the job better than
the people upstairs or the people on top, are the
people that run the business, are the people that are
running the restaurant. They assume, Oh, I could do that job,
I'm so much better, And then you get an opportunity
to actually do that job, and you go, oh boy,
there was a lot more to this than I realized.
And I think what's gonna end up happening is when
it's all said and done and he parts ways and
his career is over and he wants to go into

(05:41):
the ownership side of things. Lebron James will then have
a true appreciation for how much Dan Gilbert catered to
him multiple times throughout the course of his career. He
doesn't get it now. He just assumes that he could
do that too. He's going to get to a point
to where he goes now. I see what he's saying.
You know, it's like people people say you you don't

(06:02):
really get what it's like to be a parent until
you have kids, and Dan, I think we're more than
qualified to talk about this since we don't have kids. Um,
and then you get you become a parent, And I've
talked to people who are parents and they say, you
don't get it until you're that and you can sort
of empathize with what your parents went through at that time.
And I think Lebron is gonna get to that at
some point. Yeah, looking at what Dan Gilbert did to
bring a championship and got zero recognition for it and

(06:25):
in fact got backlashes something that I think that, yeah,
you're dead on about that. Lebron James will realized that
in time. When you also talk about the Cavaliers in
their future, there was a lot of talk as well
about maybe Kevin Love moving on via a trade. I
think that's something that we're going to maybe hear about
in the next couple of weeks. There was a report
that the Calves want to keep Kevin Love, who's under
contract for for another year or two, I believe. But

(06:47):
the Cleveland Cavaliers. The face of the Cavaliers I think
changed a year ago with with with the trade with
the Boston Celtics. And now this is another point of
Dan Gilbert taking his team back. Yeah, and if this
is goodbye, and we both are assuming that it is
goodbye for Lebron, it was kind of a telegraph goodbye
because he wanted to be able to walk away from
this and know that he did everything he could. He
played in every game, he gave it his all. He

(07:08):
did it even with a broken hand. Dan, A lot
of it was theatrics, a lot of it was being
over dramatic, But the fact of the matter is he
wanted a clean break, to be able to walk away
and not feel any guilt like he did the first
time around. And I think that's what he's gonna end
up with. Today's show is brought to you by Farmers

to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays
at three p m. E Stern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app. He's Jonas Knocks.
I'm Dan Buyer. That is John Ramos, our wanted man
as our Fox Sports NBA in Center that you can

(08:10):
hear on Sundays. There's one half of the Odd Couple
here on Fox Sports Radio with Rob Parker. Chris Brussar
joins us now on Fox Sports Radio, and of course
Chris we're gonna start at the top with Lebron James.
Does Lebron James opting out, does that eliminate Cleveland from
a possibility of where Lebron would play next year? No,

(08:32):
not at all. I mean, he obviously still could sign
a five year deal with them, which would give him
more money than he could get anywhere else, about two
hundred seven million. He could still do a short term
deal with them. He'd lose, you know, a couple of
hundred thousand dollars, like if he did a one year
deal or one in one year deal, he loses a
couple of hundred thousand this year, but our next year.

(08:55):
But I think he could spirit um. So No, it
doesn't stop, although I do think it's going to be
the Lakers um and it could even be you know,
we've talked and I've even said, uh that he probably
doesn't go to l A by himself. But if he
really doesn't think, you know, Cleveland gives him much of

(09:15):
a chance of winning the championship. Houston's kind of out
of the picture because of just their financial situation. Um, Philadelphia,
he wouldn't want to stay there long term. And if
l A is the place he wants to be. Then
maybe he does come there knowing everybody doesn't expect the
championship right away, especially if you've got a bunch of

(09:36):
young kids and you're built this year and then maybe
next year if you get another free agent, if you
don't get one this year, Um, then you make a
big splash and try to win it all. So I
think it's leaning heavily towards the Lakers. But I'm not
gonna write Cleveland off. All right, Chris, no more messing around. Man.
We're we're tired of the games here. We're not here
to play games. Where's he going? All right? I know

(09:58):
you're holding out on us. Where's he going? No? Like
I said, I think it's I think it's gonna be
the Lakers. Um. I think Paul George will go there too,
And I know there's a lot of talk, you know,
about him staying in Oklahoma City, and maybe he will, um,
and more power to him if he does, that's great.
But I just I have trouble coming up with any

(10:19):
real rational reasons why he would. He's from l A,
he's wanted to play in l A. You go there
with Lebron, you've got a much better chance to winning
the championship than you're doing Oklahoma City, which is none. Um,
why in the world wouldn't he go? I don't understand it.
So I think they'll both be Lakers. Uh, sometime next

(10:40):
week Chris Bruce start joining us here on Fox Sports Radio.
What is the person at your door? Where do they
think Lebron? I think that's my daughter, and uh, she
knows nothing about Lebron but his name. She's one of
a few people on earth that um isn't really caught
up in where Lebron's going. I would have done anything

(11:02):
if that was Rob Parker. And that was Rob park
Please Chris Bruce here on Fox Sports Radio. He's joe
Us Knox. I'm Dan Buyer in for Doug Gottlieb. So
the Kauaii situation also took a bit of a turn
today as the seventies sixers are reportedly interested in trading
for the Spurs forward. Where did the Kauai talk stand

(11:22):
with the Lakers, with the Celtics and now with Philadelphia? Well,
what it come It's kind of come down to, is
this is one of those Eastern Conference pours Philadelphia or
Boston willing to give up more. You know more than
the Lakers for what could very well be a one
year rental now Philadelphia. One of the things he has

(11:44):
going forward is that, you know, Brett Brown was in
San Antonio Whiska Island as an assustant coach and from
all intent, you know, all signals, they had a pretty
solid relationship. So two things. One, they start off with
a good foot, maybe Kauai feels comfortable enough with him
to maybe stay there long term. And too, they have

(12:06):
a relationship where they may be able to find out
from Kauai you know what he's thinking about the future
and the chances of him staying there. Now, everything I've
been told is that Kauai is l a or busted.
This is from people close to him, Uh, not just Lakers.
I mean, maybe the Lakers have a slight edge over

(12:26):
the Clippers, but he wouldn't mind the Clippers at all.
But he wants to be in l A and that
he would likely tell teams, I'm I'm not signing long
term with you, um, but maybe you grew like Oklahoma
City and you take a chance and and we'll see
if they end up getting Paul George. They took a shot,
and maybe it'll work. Um. Look, Philly or Boston has

(12:50):
would have a great season with Kauai. They probably one
of them would probably be in the finals, um, and
they'd have a shot at winning it. So maybe that
would be enough to convince him to stay. But how
much do you give up to do in a situation
like that. We know what the Lakers will give up.
They'll pretty much give up everything, um, And so that's

(13:13):
what it's gonna come down to. Spurs with much rather
deal with one of those Eastern teams, and if they
can get a comparable package, then he's going east. How
concerned should teams around league? Crisprus are joining us here
on Fox Sports Radio. How concerned are people around the
league with the severity of kawhi enarde injury? Because that's
almost been been forgotten. But if you're a team and

(13:35):
it's really this serious that you missed almost an entire year,
wouldn't that kind of factor into your decision as to
whether or not you bring this guy in? Yeah, you
don't hear a ton to talk about that. I mean,
obviously every team that that potentially trades for him or
does straightforward, they're gonna have their doctors examine him. They're
gonna look at him really closely and you know, make

(13:57):
sure they're comfortable with it. But at this point, mean,
the people I've talked to are like, look, we we
we believe he's gonna come back, and he's gonna come back. Fine. Um,
So I don't hear a lot of talk about there
being too much concern with that. But again, they're gonna
look him over with a fine tooth comb, for sure.
Chris Peru started joining us here on Fox Sports Radios.

(14:18):
We're in for Doug Gottlie. He's showing the stocks. I'm
Dan Buyer. I got another one in Kauai and it's
actually Lakers. Um. From the Lakers side of things, we
know that we've heard that san Antonio wants brandon Ingram,
and then there was an l A Times report that
says the Lakers have not included brandon Ingram in any
of the talks. Is there a reason. Are the Lakers
just completely messing this up by trying to slow play

(14:40):
this or not give a great offer? Um? Your thoughts
on this brandon Ingram deal? Is it true that they
haven't put Ingram in a in a deal with san Antonio?
I believe they have talked about Brandon Ingram with san Antonio.
Now you know, I don't wanna shoot down anybody's reporting, um,
but there's no way they're getting this done about Brandon

(15:03):
and there. It's just no way. And especially if you
know there's reports that san Antonio doesn't want Lionzo Ball
and that makes all the sense in the world, just
because it looks hard, um. And they do have a
point guard that they like a lot to jan j Bury,
who's not much of a shooter himself, so you wouldn't
probably wouldn't want him and Alonzo, both of them not

(15:24):
being shooters. So uh, that could be you know why
they also don't want Lineso. So but yeah, Brandon Ingra
was gonna be in that deal if it's made. Uh,
and probably Kyle kuz Win as well. And I think
those are two players that Gregg Popovich could make a
lot out of. And that's the thing with the Spurs.
At the end of the day, even though we understand

(15:45):
you don't want to send him West, you don't want
to send him to a conference rival, at the end
of the day, you have to make the best deal
for yourself. And if it comes from the Lakers, then
you deal with the Lakers and you build your younger
guys into a good team and you go from there.
Um And you know, again, like I said, it'll come

(16:07):
down to what Philly or Boston, because Boston can obviously
offer a ton really can offer a nice deal too,
um with draft picks and stuff like that. That's why
they wouldn't got that Miami pick on draft nights. So
we'll see how far they're willing to go though, for
a guy that could be a rental. Cristoper started with
us here on Fox Sports Radio, Dan Buyer, Jonas Knockxon

(16:29):
for Doug Gottlieb. What would be considered a failure this
offseason for Magic Johnson and the Lakers. Well, I think
in some people's eyes, they would certainly look at it
us as a failure if they don't get any of
these big name free agents now and and throwing coal Island.
He's not a free agent, but if they don't trade
for him. Um. I would not go that far myself,

(16:52):
but I think some people would look at it like man,
Paul George was all but signed, sealed and delivered and
you didn't get him, you know. I, however, would say
I do agree with Magic on the two year plan,
because you got Jimmy Butler, who loves Hollywood coming up
next year. You got Clay Thompson, who obviously asked connections
to the Lakers through his dad, coming up, and how

(17:15):
long and how many people as Golden State gonna be
able to pay at some point, you know, for max salary,
that's gonna be tough. So even if you don't, let's
say you strike out this summer, And where would Lebron go.
I mean, would he stay in Cleveland on a one
year deal and then one look to come here in
twenty nineteen with another free agent? I think that'd be

(17:37):
a possibility. You know, Kevin Durant. You know, what does
he do with Golden State? Does he do a one
and one and keep his options open? So you would
have a lot of opportunities to get another guy. And
let me you know, let's not forget Kawhi Leonard. If
some if the Spurs were to keep him our year
or trade him East, there still would be the great

(17:59):
chance that he comes to the Lakers as a free agent.
So the key for the Lakers what what would be
a failure here? It is if they strike out on
the big names and then go spend all their cap
room up or mediocre players. That would be a strikeout.
But I don't think they're dumb enough to do that.
If they don't get the big name stars, then they'll

(18:19):
spend money or maybe a one year deal, you know,
a big twenty million dollars for somebody, maybe in Isaiah
Thomas um and you know, they'll make sure they maintain
their cap space so they can go after guys next summer.
What about the Marcus Cousins If does he have the
possibility to be a Laker and would that be a
win or a loss if you're the Lakers. Yeah, there

(18:40):
are some people that say they like him. I've heard that. Um,
I'm not a guy that's too high on the markets.
I mean, great individual skills and numbers obviously, but looky
got the Chilles injury, so we don't know when he's
coming back next year. It might be January for all
we know, or maybe longer. Um and then as it

(19:02):
was when he was healthy, I mean, never led the
team to the playoffs. Now I've I heard, I haven't
really confirmed it, but I heard it from pretty good
source that New Orleans offered him three years sixty million
and he turned it down, so he wants big money.
Um So, I I gotta be honest. If I'm a
Laker fan, I wouldn't get over the excited if they

(19:25):
got DeMarcus Cousins because I just to me, he might
be like, he's better than Kevin Love. But you know,
Kevin Love was that guy that put up a ton
of numbers in Minnesota but never led you to the playoffs,
and his numbers were astronomical, kind of like DeMarcus is. Um.
But if Wendy's not attached, then I I it's hard

(19:46):
for me to get too excited about it. That wouldn't
be a failure, but it would be a severe disappointment
I think for the Lakers if that's all they came
away with this summer. Crisper started with us here on
Ox Sports Radio. Last one for me. Um So, you're
you're hosting with Rob Parker every single Sunday. You do
that from three to six Pacific time, six to nine

(20:09):
Eastern time. You're doing the podcast and you're always on
Fox Sports one. You're a Fox Sports Radio NBA insider,
an analyst. But when you were just an insider, okay,
before you added everything else, to to what it is
that you do. How crazy is this next forty eight
hours for the insiders that cover the NBA, with the
amount of reports, phone calls, text message and everything else

(20:31):
that you get. Oh, it was nuts. It was I'm
glad I'm not uh solely in that role. I mean, honestly,
that's the big reason why I left ESPN. You know,
they wanted to keep me strictly in that role, and
Fox was offering me more analysis, more opinion commentary and
things like that. And um, I would be typically for

(20:54):
free agency, I would stay in Bristol for about two
straight weeks, living the hotel and work around the clock. Um.
I've been in the student I'd be in the studio
on Sports Center and all the TV shows, And in
between shows, you're on the phone, you're talking with people,
you're texting with people, You're obviously keeping your eye on

(21:14):
the Internet and Twitter. Um. And then when you get
back to the hotel, when you're done with your TV hits,
you're basically doing the same thing. You you get I mean,
this is no exaggeration. There would be nights when you
get maybe two two hours sleep. Um, and it's just
constant now, you know, it's not perpetual. It's not gonna

(21:37):
keep going forever and ever, you know, there is there
is a light at the end of the tunnel, which
is usually around you like ten, three levels or twelve
or something like that. But for those two weeks or so,
it is madness, madness, And again I'm glad I'm not
in that role anymore. Believe me. Here, I'm Sunday nights

(21:58):
at six o'clock Eastern time. It's co host of The
Odd Couple with Rob Parker here on Fox Sports Radio
or NBA analyst and intenda Chris Bruce Hard. Thanks Chris,
we appreciate the time, and yeah, good luck over the

honor of Lebron's big day, it's time for our Lebron
James l a round table. Let's do it all right, Okay,

(27:02):
we assemble some great people to talk about Lebron James.
Let's get it started with me and our panels. Let's
start with Robert Garat. He's our producer. He works on
the show he hosted an NBA insiders such as Chris
Russary and Chris Mannix. He also holds the honor of
being the only man in our history to shut down
the network for over three minutes and live to tell
about it. It's ro It's Robert Gara, Robert. What's going on?

(27:26):
Button Bob? I love? This panel is gonna get better
right now. It's our newsman extraordinary, he's here at the network.
Steve Seger is our defending March Madness Bracket Challenge champion,
and he made it look easy that he that we
refused to give him the real grand prize. Steve Disager,
Welcome to the round table. Thank you, good night, guys. Uh,

(27:48):
this panel is getting even better. The king of weekend
Overnights is here, and he prided himself on being ahead
of the curve. In fact, this guy has had several
of his features stolen by TV and radio host around
the country. Let's get for jonas not an honor. This
round table couldn't get any better than well least but

(28:10):
not least, but not least is our go to field
reporter here at Fox. He's maybe our go to Yes,
go to field reporter here Fox. He's been at every
major sporting event in the past five years, and his
popularity is growing. For example, he once had his golf
podcast get downloaded thirty seven times in less than a week. Lays, gentlemen,

(28:32):
it is Dan Bayers. And by the way, John, you
can go to Scott's office after the show. Okay, Robert,
this uh, this l a Lebron round table with all
these great guys. Let's get it started with you. I'll
started out by saying, is Lebron James coming to the Lakers? Yes,

(28:53):
that's all the time we have for you tonight. Big
thanks for everyone who tweeted in using the hashtag the
John Rommels Show. Also not the thanks a boy, thanks
to Moty crew for beat tonight special guest and sorry fellas,
We're gonna get to you next time. And Robert on

(29:14):
this Flirty Friday, I'll catch you on your back side,
right Okay, Um, well, you got to reveal a glitch
in the the end of the show, just a moment ago, Danny,
you want to reveal it as what happened there? Well,

(29:35):
I will say this, the the booking department did book
earth Wind and Fire, but they canceled, They doused their
own appearance and were replaced by Motley Crewe just not
in enough time for the script apartment to make any
changes to their script. Oh man, like you could not
pick like there's nobody would ever confuse earth Wind and

(29:56):
Fire for Motley Crew. That would never happen except when
you don't up date the Microsoft document. I do have
an update. Earth Wind and Fire can be heard on
the John Ramo Show in September, so that that's is true.
And I want to add just one other thing. John
apparently looks at me as a guy that they send
to fields. Just go to a field reporter, don't damn

(30:21):
broadcast live from a field. Oh so good
