(00:27):
a great day. Doug Gottlieb Show broadcast live every single
day from sunny southern California. Welcome in. We'll get the
football in two or so minutes. How's that two or
so minutes? That okay with you, guys? Yeah, I mean
kind of big breaking story. We'll talk some packers, We'll
(00:50):
talk some chargers. We'll also talk some cowboys. Like why
talk to the cowboys? Because of the cowboys. Now you'll understand upcoming.
Let me first start with the news of the day,
the news of the moment. Bruce Pearl's retired at Auburn.
He released a video which is on social media, just
came out. I just watched it myself, and he says,
(01:11):
now it's time obviously if you've been following Bruce Pearl.
He has some political aspirations. Something he said in the
video which I totally understand. He said, you know, if
I told people if I couldn't stay, if I was
one hundred percent committed, was an all in did have
the same energy, then I would retire. And there's a
lot of things that people have asked me about a
(01:34):
one year in And for the record, I love my jobs,
both of them. I'm sitting around yesterday, I'm texting with
my players and they're so jealous because I get to
talk about football. A bunch of are Packer fans, and
you know, they want me to just evisterate everybody today,
fire everybody type thing. Not really, and we'll get to that,
(01:55):
but the one thing that really And Bruce's a friend.
I coached under him some with the Maccabiah, which is
the Jewish Olympics. His son Steven has not taken over,
actually played for my dad. We're good friends, so there's
a lot of ties there and I think ultimately Bruce
Pearl should be a Hall of Famer. I don't think
(02:15):
it's close. You know, they go to two final fours
at Auburn, they win champ. I think what five SEC
championships and some some variety with the regular season or postseason.
Pretty incredible. But it's a twenty four hour job, and
for me it's twenty one. But you know, while I'm
on air, the texts are coming. Now we have a
system to where everybody knows house got to be on
(02:38):
fire before you text DG during the show. But the
point is that it's a you know, it's like your
and and here's the other part is now you have
additional responsibilities. People believe that all you do is coach
(02:58):
basketball and then do interviews, Like remember when you're a
head coach. It's different at my level, which is the
lower level than Auburn at the top of the SEC,
but it's still the same in that you have to
manage people, your staff, your players, your practices, your games,
your donors. And for me, i'm a CEO as well,
(03:20):
like I have to manage all of the budget for everything,
which I know Bruce essentially does. Even if you have
people who are your GM, even if you have people
who work in administrative in those things that at the
higher level they help you out with those things, still
comes down to the n day, Like hey, coach, we
only have so much money. That number is much bigger
there than it is here. What do you want to
allocate it to? And then you know, if you've been
(03:44):
an unbelievable recruiter your whole life, you're not going to
stop recruiting. I would also tell you that though they're
still recruiting well at Auburn, like, the recruiting is different
now because some kids not at our level, but some
kids are just going for the money and you don't
get You also don't have the time to really recruit them.
You know, they hit the portal and you got to
make a decision and it's speed dating. So I don't
(04:08):
think it's just the current era. I don't think it's
the pay for play on its own. I don't think
it's any one thing. I think the fact that politics
are out there, the fact that he's just got to
a final four, you're you know, I mean when we
were talking about winning one or two more games like
(04:29):
that doesn't make you whole as a person. And it's
really really difficult to do. And I'm also guessing that
the reason it was done now was he probably want
to do it at the end of the year, but
he said, if I do at the end of the year,
I want Steven to get the job, and they said,
we're not. We're not there yet with him, even though
he's the associated coach. So and Dean Smith did this
(04:49):
with Bill Guthridge. Other head coaches have done it where
they retire right before the year so that you have
to give it to their their chosen coach, and if
he does well enough, then he gets to keep the
job full time for a long time. So my opinion
is college basketball lost an absolute legendary personality and fabulous
coach in a Bruce Pearl. My guess is he goes
(05:10):
into politics, which if he thinks recruiting was vicious, he's
got no idea. But he's a passionate guy and sometimes
it just takes passion and energy and for him something different.
You know, when you've been doing this thing for forty years.
I've been doing it for a year and a half.
I love it. Will you be doing this thing for
forty years, You're probably like, Okay, I've climbed all these mountains.
(05:34):
Now what All right, let's get to the National Football
League also got college football to talk about, and again,
there is probably a little piece of the college football
and the fire everybody mentality will kind of circle back
to it, which I'm sure turns Bruce off, turns other
You know, Dabo Sweeney was king of the world. Now
all of a sudden they're struggling. Do I think that
(05:56):
he's gotten a little bit arrogant with this process? Sure,
I think they don't recruit the same level. Sure, but Dabosweeney,
much like Mike Gundy. It's like two years ago, they
were really good. Actually, Clemson was pretty good last year.
So how do guys that will elite coaches for a
long period of time suddenly now we're in a new
era and they're not doing as well. We're not doing
(06:18):
well at all. Well, I mean, something tells me that
the sport is changing and you got to adapt and
adjust or perish. Anyway, we'll circle back to that. The

the Browns beat the Packers. Why does it feel like
the Packers lost to the Browns? Why does it feel
like that? Now? Part of it is this young roster,
but championship teams don't lose that game. Yesterday, third and three,
(07:03):
three and a half or so to go in the
fourth quarter, the Packers chose to throw the ball instead
of run the ball. They run the ball, clock runs.
You know under three minutes ago, you punt if you
don't get a first down. Your offensive line had Struggledrunning
the football was arduous, right, it was a tough task,
and now all of a sudden you got Micah Parsons
for a reason that makes sense. Instead, they choose to
(07:25):
throw it and Jordan Love throws a perfect pass to
the defense. My guess is there was miscommunication because I
just don't think you throw it that much gift wrapped
to the defense unless somebody did the wrong thing. But
it's a game where you got to win those. You know,
you're two and zero in your division, a chance to
(07:48):
go to three and oh and kind of separate yourself
and you come up short. Here's Matt lafleour head coached
the Packers, talking about the loss.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Well, that was extremely disappointing. Obviously, to be in a
position to win the game at the end of the
game and to have the total the script totally flip
on you with the block and then I'm getting into
field goal range. It's tough, it's tough to deal with,
but you better learn from each and every opportunity that
(08:15):
you go out there and in the wins and in
the losses, and you got to move on. One thing
that we have to get corrected is, I mean, when
you have fourteen penalties in a game, it's going to
be tough to overcome that. So we got to do
a much better job of coaching the fundamentals, the details,
and then we got to lock in.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
Yeah, I mean, six fall starts, it's going to get
you beat. I mean, but it's one of those. You're
the Packers. You look back, you had a field goal block,
you had six fall starts, you had fourteen penalties, and
you had a really bad interception, and yeah, I get it.
Like you had two offensive linemen return from injury, but
they both left within reaggravating the injuries, and your offensive
line was just getting crushed by the Browns. Understood, still
(08:53):
should have won the game. And that's really probably the
story of yesterday, right, is that the best teams that's
the Eagles, Right, That's the Eagles. It's the second straight year.
I mean even in the last year in the playoffs,
would said, well, the weather was better, maybe the Rams win,
and the Rams had the they were dominating the Eagles.
(09:14):
But the Eagles just find a way. Heck, I'm gonna
throw on a team that I didn't think played particularly
well for a good portion of the game was the Chargers,
but they just found away late. Whereas the Packers, as
great as they look the first two weeks of the season,
they found a way to lose a game they rightfully
should have won. Now, some of that is young teams.
(09:35):
You know, you have an offensive lineman, say they go undefeated,
but he's young. Young teams will surprise you with wins
they shouldn't get and losses they shouldn't have as well.
It's not an excuse, it's reality. But also the lack
of whether it's discipline, youth, or whatever. All those penalties
that's gonna get s beat every time. What gets you
beat line play, turnovers, penalties, and then you know mistakes
(10:03):
and special teams they lose to a team that they
absolutely positive it should beat. And by the way, congrats
to Jay stew who picked that outright win by the
Cleveland Browns. So now he's got to make his picks
every week and we'll promote him on social media and
we'll see just how good he is.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
Oh, you're gonna you're gonna hear a little bit more
of that and our love and hate. So I'm gonna
tease the listeners stick around for the next hour. You're
gonna love it.

Speaker 4 (11:52):
What did you love?
Speaker 1 (11:53):
God?
Speaker 4 (11:54):
I love you and what did you hate?
Speaker 5 (11:56):
Meet these player hays.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Love love love love love love love. Hey hey, hey,
hey hey. Dan Byer has been in such a good mood.
Let's look like you had a great trip with Jay
stew To to Buffalo, to Niagara Falls and back. Let's
let him lead off.
Speaker 6 (12:17):
Dann what he got, Doug, I loved our trip to Buffalo.
I had a magnificent time. Sands. The ending since the
departure from Buffalo. If that could be a different story,
maybe even for the same day a different way. What happened, Well,
we just we had some travel snaffers out of Buffalo.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
Oh oh wait, give me the Okay, So you guys
know I travel a lot, right, a lot like I do.
I took Friday off so I could see my my daughter,
harper rye the Oakland State Scrimmage and we get to
recruit some as well. I was there. I was in
LA for one day and then I'm back. So tell
me the I'll tell you how my brain works for
(12:57):
the travel issues.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
What happened before, down before, damn and eloquently talks about
what happened on the way back. I just want to
give it a title because it's mine. I made it up.
It sounds like a murder murder mystery novel. But the
title of the story Dan's about to take about to say,
is the Nightmare at O'Hare.
Speaker 1 (13:17):
Oh, oh, here's the worst. Oh, here's the worst. You
don't have to tell me that one of my assistant
coaches was flying at the California gate changed five times
because there were thunderstorms. Right, that's what happened. On What
day was that? Is that Friday after after the show.
This is my nightmare.
Speaker 6 (13:32):
We were trying to fly back Saturday, Saturday night and
we were delayed in Buffalo and then it's not my
love like it's I want to get to my love
of But we had to stay of the night at O'Hare. Yeah,
we spent the night.
Speaker 5 (13:48):
At O'Hare at the Hilton. No at O'Hare the actual airport,
not the o'haritan either. I guess it is the Hilton.
I always think it's a Sheraton, but it's a Hilton
because of the we just we didn't find the value.
Neither of us did.
Speaker 1 (14:00):
And how long was the was the time between when
you thought you were going to fly and then when
you did fly the next morning? What time is your
flight in the morning?
Speaker 6 (14:07):
Seven am?
Speaker 1 (14:08):
Oh, it was absolutely worth it to go check in
the hotel, because I mean, you're in the hotel. You
can already be checked in. You could get up at
six fifteen to make your flight.
Speaker 6 (14:17):
Yeah, well they did.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Then you're in a bad mood the whole weekend, dude.
Speaker 6 (14:20):
Yeah, it wasn't worth the amount that we would have
had to pay because of the limited discount. That was
given by the airline.
Speaker 5 (14:27):
Yeah, what was it?
Speaker 1 (14:27):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (14:28):
What was that fat discount?
Speaker 3 (14:29):
There?
Speaker 5 (14:29):
Offered you big ten percent off, big ten big ten country,
big ten percent off.
Speaker 6 (14:34):
Right, So let's see, so it should actually be like.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
Was it American or were you on United?
Speaker 6 (14:39):
Ten percent off?
Speaker 5 (14:40):
Aren't they supposed to give you the full?
Speaker 1 (14:42):
Were you on American? Were you on America United?
Speaker 6 (14:44):
You're on United? Yeah.
Speaker 5 (14:46):
Well, so let's say the hotel room at the Oheritan
or the Hilton was two hundred dollars because it's it's
right by the airport, so it's very convenient. So you're
saving twenty dollars. What good does that do?
Speaker 6 (14:55):
Yeah? The Hilton by the at the airport was not
two hundred dollars. It was more than that, Yes, yes,
significantly more.
Speaker 7 (15:01):
Yeah yeah.
Speaker 5 (15:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (15:03):
Anyway, what I did love were the variety of eating
establishments in Buffalo that we went to. Jason, I don't
know if you can attest to this, but my goal
was to eat wings every single meal, and I almost
accomplished it. In fact, there was a sandwich had a
place bar bill where people raved about, but it looked
(15:23):
so good that I had to go with the sandwich
over the wings, but every other spot that we went to,
I loved the wings. Sands won. One was kind of
let them. We won't name who it was, but I
almost accomplished having wings for every meal during our sixty
hours in Buffalo. It was a magnificent in fact, because
I had to then check my bag because I had
(15:43):
some sauces left that I wanted to bring back, and
I had to recheck the bag because of the sauces
and the TSA agent even said on one of the sauces,
good job, like that was a good recommendation, like a
good place to go.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
All that's awesome. Yeah, that's so Buffalo.
Speaker 6 (16:03):
So Schmidt for giving us the recommendation on one of
those places voices job, Bob. We appreciate that.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
But that's great job.
Speaker 6 (16:11):
Yeah, it was good sauce, real good sauce.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
That's good sauce. And we have a by the way,
we have dug the thing for the tickets. You weren't
here on a deficency. Tickets were outstanding. This the in
game experience was so much fun. We had a lot
to say on Friday about it, but at bottom line
is Mike delivered on that one.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
Doug my favorite honestly, this is and people ask you
for tickets all the time. You guys are great because
you asked early, then you followed up periodically without being
jerks about it whatever. But honestly, it's my favorite part
of everybody asks all the time. Like I I like
going to shows and games that I've been to a
lot of them. Nothing makes me happier than you liking
(16:52):
and appreciating and going to something that somehow is able
to pull off. That was cool and our thanks to
Chris and the Buffalo Bills ticket.
Speaker 6 (17:00):
Did you see the did you see our seats? Like
from another social media Yeah, we were, like.
Speaker 1 (17:05):
I was, I was like, I was like honestly, when
I saw the seats, I said, God, I wish I
would have gone.
Speaker 6 (17:13):
We were we were six rows ahead of al Michaels
and kirkurb Street. Like that's where we turned around. We
saw the Buffalo coaching staff, we saw the Miami coaching staff.
We saw Yeah, it was magnificent.
Speaker 5 (17:23):
Did you turn around and flip them off for wave
or something?
Speaker 6 (17:26):
So yeah, we definitely flipped them off, gave him a finger. Yes,
that's definitely what I'm gonna do to al Michaels.
Speaker 5 (17:35):
Herbie's former buck guy, so you wouldn't flip him off.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Herbie's the best dude. Herby's good people. Oh no, you're
clothes like you could have gone and see Herbie. Great dude. God,
he's always bringing a different Golden Retriever though on the road, right.
Speaker 5 (17:47):
He's got to he's got his new one. His former
one meant it's you know, it's end and he's got
a new one now.
Speaker 1 (17:52):
So that's my goal is to be able to bring
Barty on the road with me. But it's not he's
he's a service dog.
Speaker 5 (17:58):
But he's not Sideline mascot.
Speaker 1 (18:00):
He'd be good. Okay, Sam, would you love for the weekend?
Speaker 5 (18:02):
Okay, let's go to Friday night. You know, I don't
mind the Friday night Big Ten game or the Friday
night college game, but it's kind of nice. So it
gets it out of the way, especially if your team wins,
which Iowa did thirty eight twenty eight, as Iowa was
locked in kind of a crazy shootout with Rutgers there
in Piscataway and of the first quarter hits and Rutgers
their athletics department, their football program did a really nice thing.
(18:23):
They did their own version of the Iowa wave, but
they used drones to make the form of a hand
to wave a little bit. They had fireworks and then
they had a big r drone drones. I feel like
they had fireworks too, But drones are like, you're not
gonna creep out the dog. They're not gonna make veterans
or people with PTSD feel like they're under attack. So
the drones are nice. They can do a lot of advancing.
(18:43):
So they did the hand, they did the wave, and
then they tinted the whole stadium read I loved it.
I thought it was a great gesture. If you want
to see video of it, it's at on my Twitter
page io Sam ninety nine. You can see it a
couple of tweets down. Just a nice gesture from the
Rutgers Athletics department in the stadium.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
Therese, do I know you already touched on this and
this show, but I do want to give kind of
my perspective on the charger. So Dan got into only
like a tenth of what made the nightmare at O'Hare
a nightmare. I could not be more happy to be
back in my couch watching football yesterday and to watch
(19:21):
the Chargers from start to finish. They just they don't
win games like this. As Doug has stated, they're not
only three and oh, but they're three and oh against
the AFC West. They are out to such a great start.
Justin Herbert was getting his ass kicked all game long,
and he kept fighting through it, kept making plays. Naja
(19:45):
Harris is done for the year. I want to say
the Khalil Mack. I'm hoping maybe to get back, but
like we just the Chargers just keep winning. It's so
Unchargeda like. I love it. I loved it from the weekend,
especially because it was a night sing to experience after
the nightmare.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
At Nightmare at Oha Oh, Charges Go Go.
Speaker 5 (20:07):
Charga's wash was Philip Rivers. Was he the quarterback? When
they were into funny you ask funny, you ask Drew Brees.
Ah the last time they know to the Drew Brees
led him to four and oh. Now here's the funny side.
They finished the year eight and eight, so I don't
want to take anything from that year. But Drew Brees
was the quarterback. Ladanian Tomlinson was in his what first
(20:30):
or second year, Marty Schottenheimer was the head coach, so
they had everyone but Philip Rivers pretty much. Jeez, what
a touchdown throw seriously by Herbert.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
Like unbelievable, unbelievable. I mean, look, my love would be
that people are starting to figure out like he's really good.
You had knuckleheads on TV that I don't think watched
game full games, you know, they watched mistakes and whatever.
But I honestly, I'm gonna give my love the weekend
to the Cleveland Browns. I love it in Cleveland Browns.
(21:04):
You're like, wait, dude, you live in Green Bay. You
like the Packers? I do, okay, But we have our
first practice today, say we get done. Our practice begins
thirty minutes after the show is done. And I've learned
a lot in one year. But the hardest thing to
teach us, I've told people is how to win, you know,
(21:24):
is how to how to win, how to how to
control everything and focus and finish the task. And we
just didn't. Last year. I had a really young team,
and I you know, I was going through kind of
mental reps of like six games I thought we should
have won. We did not close the deal. But it
wasn't just that they won. It wasn't just that they
(21:45):
kept fighting, and they block a kick and then they
kicked their own. It was did you see how seamless
that operation was of getting a couple more yards spiking
the ball now that the ref is supposed to touch it
before they said it, But whatever point is that the
Cleveland Browns were ready for that moment, right, ready for
(22:06):
that moment. And I, like, I can tell you you're
getting ready for a game, and you're worried about how
do we stop them, and how do we score? And
what if they do this, we call it. If this
then that, If they do this, then we do that.
If they do this, then we do that. Right, You're
worried about all these other things. But that team that
was on the field, that was in the two minute drill,
they were prepped and ready and executed to absolute perfection.
(22:29):
Not just a two minute but the ability to get
a field goal down, you know, to throw in the
middle field, spike the ball, get the field goal unit
out there, kick the field goal, win the game. And
I as a coach, I loved it. All. Right, let's
get to what we hated from the weekend plenty to
talk about. We go to our resident hater, Jase.
Speaker 5 (22:49):
Do what you up, Doug.
Speaker 3 (22:51):
I can't stand prediction radio. I've said on this so
many times, I know what's coming. Once I program a network,
I'm gonna and predictions. No predictions. It's silly, it's lazy,
it doesn't serve the listener. But on Friday, something really
neat happened. So I hate predictions. But on Friday, when
(23:13):
you weren't here, Dan Bayer and Carrie Rhoades were filling in.
Dan and I were doing the show from our affiliate
in Western New York. And I'm hoping that Dan remembers
the station's name, because I don't. I should have done
that much down.
Speaker 5 (23:25):
Station thirteen forty WLVL. Oh, that could be a liner
right there. They could not have been more professional, amazing accommodations.
Thank you to Frank for that. Now, Dan went around
the horn during game time. It was I got DIBs,
and he's like, I got dis what's your upset specials?
What's the upset for the weekend? And something like this happened.
Speaker 3 (23:50):
There are some home teams getting a lot of points
this weekend, So I'm gonna go with Cleveland getting it
looks like eight or eight and a half if you're
lucky Cleveland to beat the Packer at home with eight
and a half points. Wait a minute, outright or just
to cover that's a great question. I guess I misread
the question. I'm gonna go with the Browns outright, Pa,
Thank you?
Speaker 2 (24:13):
So.
Speaker 3 (24:14):
Bottom line, I hate prediction radio until I get one right.
And then also I want to let the listeners know.
Did you see how clumsy I was with that prediction.
I didn't take it serious. I was mocking the fact
that we were doing predictions and I still got it right.
That should show you how flimsy your gambling expert analysis is.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
Thank you. Wow. So it's my ted talk. Uh Sam,
We'll let you go second. Let me hate it in
the weekend, all right?
Speaker 5 (24:41):
Well, I could have hated the Packer loss on the
road to the Browns in Cleveland. That's a low hanging
fruit for me because I'm a Packer fan. I did
not like it, didn't care for it. I was here
at Fox Sport Trio watching it live. But I'll go
to something else. This is a hate based on fear.
I hate how good the Indiana Hoosiers look because they
come to Kinnick Stadium weekend and my goodness, the thrashing
(25:03):
that they did, the ninth ranked Illinois fighting a lion
and I the ali and I were in fact not
fighting that day. They lost? Was it sixty five to ten?
Als by fifty some points? Indiana, Indiana Hoosiers for a
second year in a row, We're like, we have the
Big ten has to deal with these guys. They brought
in the outgoes Curtis Rourke, who came in from Ohio
(25:25):
to Indiana. He brought them to the playoff last year.
In they bring in Fernando Mendoza from Cal stud and
this guy went twenty one of twenty three, two sixty seven,
five touchdowns, no picks. I watched a handful of Cal
games last year when he was a quarterback at you know,
Pack two after dark whatever they were in the ACC
at that point, let's just say West Coast Football after dark.
I don't remember him ever putting on a show like this.
(25:47):
This guy is a stud. I am fearful of what
the Hoosiers might do to the Hawkeyes at Kinnick Stadium
next Saturday. They went from like a two and a
half three and a half four point favorite on Sunday
to now they're a over a seven and a half
point favorite on the road. So wow, Indiana looks like
they haven't skipped a beat. Kurt Signetti has he is
a transfer portal maven and so hopefully Iowa can get
(26:11):
out of their own home stadium with some dignity.
Speaker 3 (26:13):
Intact, hey, guys, real fast, have you guys noticed, has
there ever been a state on a bigger sports heater
than Indiana? Sam just eloquently put how good the Hoosiers
are playing? And they made the playoffs last.
Speaker 1 (26:30):
Year, Pacers went to the finals.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
Caitlin Clark and the Fever are the talk of an
entire sport and they just won their playoff game the
other day. I heard I didn't see it.
Speaker 5 (26:40):
A first game in the sammis over the aces yep
after Asia Wilson took the MVP.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
Culture three and oero Culture three and oh with a
guy that was counted out and Daniel Jones has not
turned the ball over once in three games. Has there
ever been a state on a bigger sports heater than
the Indiana state?
Speaker 5 (26:59):
The state of Indian State. Indiana and Notre Dame went
to the went to the championship game last year, and
India Notre Dame probably will write the ship this year.
Speaker 3 (27:08):
Don Dawkits is just killing folks with right little sports commentary.
Speaker 5 (27:14):
Don and Dan and the Indians. Hell of a couple
of two years now, Hell of a couple two years.
Speaker 1 (27:21):
Okay, let's get to you there, Dan Byer.
Speaker 6 (27:23):
I'm nitpicking. I'm absolutely nit picking because it was a
banner day yesterday for CBS Sports. All right, you guys
want to know why? Why was yesterday a banner day?
Speaker 1 (27:34):
Fiftieth fiftieth anniversary of NFL today or something?
Speaker 5 (27:40):
Doug, this is how they started their broadcast yesterday. Loved it.
Speaker 8 (27:44):
Yes, you are looking live you how amazing In Minneapolis.
It's a battle of backup quarter bred Musburgers. They dressed
up hoping they can deliver in their seventies gear.
Speaker 6 (28:00):
Brought that to the old set. It was magnificent. It
was just magnificent, Brent, the whole deal. When the Patriots
and Steelers played, the Patriots wore their throwback uniforms. The
on screen graphic used by CBS Sports was the current Patriots.
Oh come on, absolutely, yeah, my thoughts exactly Sam might
(28:24):
have been in the computer, might have been, but guess what.
Guess who else wore throwback uniforms yesterday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
on Fox and guess what Fox's graphic Bucco Bruce brighton
orange in our face, perfectly positioned knife and teeth, and
CBS could not go that one millimeter more to replace
(28:47):
the flying Elvis with Pat Patriot. Yes, and everything was
great about yesterday in the throwback and honoring the fifty
years of CBS, and even the on site announcers were
dress stop ein Eagle and JJ Watt looking straight out
of nineteen seventy five. But that one minor detail could
have gone so far for CBS. They dropped the ball
(29:10):
on it. Otherwise a banner day, But let's bring back
Pat Patriot. If Fox can bring back Bucko Bruce, CBS
could do the same with another AFS with a AFC legend.
Speaker 5 (29:21):
They should have had you look it over, Dan, They
should have had you. Yeah, nobody asked proofre it everything.
I was at O'Hare, freezing to death the night O'Hair.
Speaker 1 (29:29):
I hate what's happened to college football fans and broadcasters.
Fans and broadcasts. I was watching Friday night as Oklahoma
State lost to Tulsa, and look, congrats to Tulsa all right,
they'd lost their last two. They got a new coach,
They had a backup quarterback who transferred in from I
think East Tennessee State. He played really well. Oklahoma State,
(29:52):
Hey look good in the first drive and then stalled
out on just about every drive until the end and
ended up losing a game at home nineteen to twelve. Now,
people free, Now, how could you lose the toll? So
look two years ago they won ten games, they lost
to South Alabama to start the season. Oka these things happened.
What I hate is this, What was the point of
Mike Gundy being awesome for fifteen years? Now, of a sudden,
(30:13):
we're paying players and it it clearly they've had a
trouble adjusting.
Speaker 7 (30:18):
Right.
Speaker 1 (30:19):
Last year they had a seventh year quarterback who won
very good. The line they kept six year lignemen like,
they kept their whole line from that ten win team,
and they just weren't that good and they kind of
got exposed. Everybody else got better. And then this year
he revamped everything. There's something called sweat equity, and we've
completely lost it. Let me explain to people, Okay, there
was no Oklahoma State football before less miles and then
(30:41):
Mike Gundy. Okay, you had a couple of years there
where when you had Gundy in college and Hartley Dykes
and Barry Sanders and Thurman Thomas, right, they were also
they got put on probation, so they were cheating at
that time. Okay, And this program was built. And look,
(31:01):
I'm not sitting here defending Gundhy like he's Perfectay, but
he won ten games two years ago at the place
and they lost to South Alabama. They have a backup quarterback,
they have a whole new staff. It's a completely different
way of doing business. My guess is ultimately he'll figure
it out. But this idea that things go bad and
oh yeah, by the way, no one has ever said like, hey,
(31:22):
how much does it cost. They all say, well, it's
fifteen million dollars to get rid of him. That's not
how much it is to get redove him. The two
coordinators have three year deals at a million dollars apiece. Okay,
so that's six million dollars, or it'll be four million
dollars ode to each of them. I've been told it's
like fifteen million dollars to get the staff. That's thirty million. Okay.
Then all these players have to be compensated. I've heard
(31:42):
it's fourteen million, so fifteen, fifteen, fifteen, here're somewhere in
the forty five million dollar range, right, maybe a little
bit more because you're still paying that staff for this year. Okay,
then you gotta go get a new staff that's fifteen million,
and you're gonna get a new team. Well, this is
a fourteen million dollar team. Next year's team will be
a twenty million dollar team. They don't have the money.
You're talking about things that don't exist. So if you
(32:04):
want to write a check for eighty million dollars, then
by god, you can tell my gun to you built
this program from basically scratch. Okay, that he can. He
can go and right off into the sunset with those
But and by the way, he gonna take every penny. Right,
So I'm not saying it's perfect. I'm just saying we
get to this thing like people want Dabbo out like
(32:24):
he's it's like he's right. Was eight out of ten
years they won the league? Like what are we doing?
It's a completely The sport has been turned on its head,
turned on its head. People can compete that never could
previously compete because they have money and they can spend
it freely, and you have to adjust to how things
are done, and it takes guys a while. But usually
(32:46):
if you knew what you're doing before, you're gonna know
what you're doing now. It just takes a little while
to adjust, or maybe you don't. But I just hate
this knee jerk lose a game. Let's fire him. Let
the season play out, and let's see.
Speaker 5 (32:56):
What's what makes me want to beat.
Speaker 1 (33:00):
Well? All right? And that is love and hate.
Speaker 4 (33:05):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation yet. Catch all of our shows at foxsports
radio dot com and within the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
It's the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. So, uh,
it's a weird feeling that Jason Stewart and I have
weird feeling. What's that weird feeling? You ask, Well, I
mean clemsoning became charging, right, Charging became a word used
(33:41):
for a team that should very well win a game,
that finds a way to lose a game, right, And yeah,
I mean that's just what happened. And you've had playoff
appearances that both the past two coaches with the Chargers
not like they've been completely inapt, but with harbaught it
definitely changed. Here's John, Uh John. Here's Jim Harbaugh, head
(34:04):
coach of the Chargers, after their three no start, talking
about his quarterback Justin Herbert. All right, all right, we'll
get you that. We'll get you that one second for.
Speaker 9 (34:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (34:18):
So, I mean, like, look, the it's just a weird
thing to watch a franchise that has been known for
a losing game finding ways to lose games instead now
finding ways to win games. Right, That's that's the easiest
way to explain. It is strange awesome. Here here's Harbaugh
on Herbert.
Speaker 9 (34:38):
I don't I don't think I had the vocabulary to,
uh to really express how great I feel uh with
this win and and uh just admiration for for our
team and for our players and coaches. In't just everybody.
It's just another game. Three wins, three uh three games,
(34:58):
and it's taken every buddy in all these games. So,
I mean, gritty, spectacular, That's about the best word I
can I.
Speaker 1 (35:07):
Can come up with. He was he was gritty, he
was spectacular, And it's weird. Like I found myself on
Herbert Island last year, where I was trying to He
was bad in the playoffs, but they had no pass
protection at all and he had nobody to throw to.
Speaker 9 (35:26):
Right.
Speaker 1 (35:26):
So the pass protection wasn't great yesterday. But he does
have now he's got Keenan Allen back who's making plays
from another touchdown reception lab. But Conky's awesome. The rookie
tight end's good. Yeah, one of his two running backs
blew out his achilles. But the rookies a stud. Uh,
there's a plan there, there's a confidence there, and maybe
(35:49):
it's harbo. I mean, Herbert was playing well last year.
Just nobody's watching. Now they're up to three no start
a couple of nationally televised games. People are watching like,
oh yeah, justin Rubert really is good. Yeah, we those
of us who know, we've known for a long time,
for a long time. Let's let's let's do this. Let's
get to uh, let's get to our Tyrecht play to day,
(36:11):
shall we? All right? The other team that again just
finds ways to win games is the Eagles. They just
find ways to win games. You know, they weren't great
against the Cowboys foin way to win, weren't great against
Chiefs Boin waid to win. Weren't great yesterday should have
been beating down? What twenty six was it? Twenty six?
Seventh to half? I found a way. It's our tyreqt
(36:32):
play the day. For over forty years, Tyrak has been
helping customers find the right tires for how and where
they drive. Ship fast and free impacked by free road,
has protection with convenience selation options like mobile tires slation,
tyrat dot Comboway tire buying should be. Eagles are up
a point rams getting ready to kick a game winning
field goal on the road place they played last year
in terrible weather fuelgal kicker had just had a sixty
(36:55):
one yard or block thirty eight yard are on the way.
Here's the call on the Eagles radio network. They blocked
him the last time the bullet spotted.
Speaker 5 (37:03):
The kick is away blocked.
Speaker 1 (37:06):
It's blocked. It's bucked up by the Eagles wanting what
that is?
Speaker 8 (37:09):
Davis thirty twenty ten five touchdown game over?
Speaker 1 (37:16):
Cheorge Davis?
Speaker 5 (37:17):
Are you drinking?
Speaker 7 (37:18):
Man?
Speaker 1 (37:18):
Blocked him again? Are you crining? Loan to him again?
Speaker 7 (37:21):
Happy one?
Speaker 1 (37:22):
No seen on anything like this? Do you believe in miracles?
Speaker 8 (37:26):
The lambs are standing silent, they can't believe.
Speaker 1 (37:30):
What just happened to them. That's our tyrack play of
the day, Merril Rees touchdown on Eagles, that's h And
then he would blatant rip off again. Do you believe
in miracles? Nobody said yes. Uh well, last time to
Lasco about his old team. The Chargers were asking about
the Eagles were asking about Justin Herbert. We got lots
(37:51):
of questions for Tommy. He joins us every week. That's
in a moment first, so let me get you Dan byer,
get you quick update on everything in sports. Dan.
Speaker 6 (37:57):
My other favorite part was he said that you've never
seen this or what I'm paraphrasing, but we saw it
earlier in the game, and then we also saw it
two other times in Week three with dramatic field goal blocks.
Speaker 1 (38:10):
Now I do feel I do feel like there's a
Seinfeld line and they're like, well, what's the deal with
all the block field goals?
Speaker 6 (38:15):
It was crazy. The Oprah one, you get a block,
you get a block with.
Speaker 1 (38:21):
Oh I like that one too, and you get a
block and you got a block.
Speaker 6 (38:25):
Everybody that one, Yeah, yes, absolutely, Browns, Jets, Eagles, oh my,
they uh yeah, crazy. It all happened within like a
twenty minute period. It was crazy.
Speaker 1 (38:39):
It was I mean this, Jason, you can got guys.
My way is Jason, I said that was Yesterday was
the greatest day in the history of Red Zone. Like
Nick Wright, you can say what you want about adults
don't watch red Zone to watch a game. I might
be maybe I'm a child. I'm sitting there screaming at
the top of my lungs. It was so good, so good.
Red Zone was amazing yesterday. It's the Doug Gottlieb Show.
(39:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio and every week we're
just so excited to be joined by Tom Tolesco last
twelve years, been a general manager eleven years with the Chargers,
last year with the Raiders, and he gives us his
unique perspective what a general manager is actually thinking, looking
a lifetime football guy when he's watching this NFL season
play out. Tom, thanks so much for joining us. Let's
(39:21):
start with last night Giants Chiefs. So the Chiefs win,
but there's lots of different takeaways. Let's start with the Giants.
How does Russell Wilson And I guess maybe Cowboys defense
is the answer, But how does he go from how
he looked in game two to how he looked in
Game three and then the decisions he's making at the
(39:42):
end of his third game with the Giants. What's the
general manager's view of Russell Wilson.
Speaker 7 (39:49):
Yeah, well, number one, you touched on it already. I
mean last week against the Cowboys, the Cowboys.
Speaker 10 (39:55):
Just aren't real strong on defense, and Russell Wilson, I mean,
Russell's one. He's he's a great one and he has
been and a lot of times great ones.
Speaker 7 (40:03):
They can recharge for a game, or recharge for a
game or two, but to do it consistently at this
point of his career, it's just it's a challenge. So
and I'm assuming the Giants kind to know this was
coming because it's just, you know, Brussel has been on
since third team in three years, so they could have
had the expectation that you would give them a winning starter,
(40:24):
winning starter or play for seventeen games. But you know,
he played well against the Cowboys last week, but different
defense yesterday with the Chiefs. The Chiefs have a really
strong defense, they're aggressive, they take some things away, and
then you know, just you know it's going to be
an issue. Whether it's Jackson Darter, whether it's Russell Wilson,
the Giants offensive line. It is just they're struggling right
(40:45):
now and it's it's the same five as last year
in twenty twenty four, So I can't see it changing
much moving forward. And that's that's that worries me. Just
whoever the quarterback is, it worries me once start gets
in there, because Dart's going to be in there at
some point.
Speaker 1 (41:00):
Yeah, I agree. What about the Chiefs? You know, you
had a little dust up with Andy Reid and Kelsey
that that I don't know your view on that, but
they continue to be down wide receivers and like I
get you're not. You're just not going to get a
pathetic opponent like the Giants offense every week. What's now
(41:21):
that you've seen the Chiefs three times? What are your thoughts?
Speaker 7 (41:24):
Yeah, the the Andy Reid sideline thing with Kelsey, that
doesn't concern me at all. We've seen that before. And
I will say the second half the Chiefs played with
much more enthusiasm, intensity, whatever you want to call it.
It looked different in the second half. So whatever we've
talked about at halftime, whatever we're talking about in the
sidelines in between series. It worked because I.
Speaker 10 (41:45):
Was just overalled that game last night just didn't have a.
Speaker 7 (41:47):
Lot of juice to it. I mean from a fans standpoint,
you know it was boring the boring side, from the
GM standpoint, there's a lot of things you can take
out of it. But but you saw a different Chiefs
team in the second half. But you know, offensively, they
still have the same issues. They've got the issues at
both tackle spots and I think Josh Simmons, they're left tackle.
He's going to be good in time, but he's a rookie.
(42:09):
And the receivers just aren't quite creating the same separation
as you would like. But they found a way to win,
and that's kind of the way they roll. And they
played better in the second half, and they're a good
defensive team and that's what they're gonna have to rely
on a little bit as the offense continues to come around.
It's kind of cool to see Taekwan Thornton really have
a nice game. He's an interesting player in college, like
he's he's tall but very skinny, like he was probably
(42:32):
in the low one eighties when he was in college,
but has big time speed, and he's a really good
route runner, and sometimes it's hard to find those those
fast receivers that have really good route skills and he
has that. So he's getting acclimated with their offense and
getting acclimated with Patrick Mahomes, and he could be somebody
as we moved through the season, could really help them out.
Speaker 1 (42:53):
Let's go to your former team, the Chargers. One of
the former teams, the Chargers, and the plays look justin
Herbert came through and it's amazing what Harbaugh has been
able to do with the mentality, right. I mean, as
a Charger fan and a friend of yours, I think
the frustrating part for it didn't happen every year because
there were some playoff years, but it did seem like
(43:14):
there was the more often than not, there was the
games that you felt like you should have won, that
you found a way to lose, whereas last night or
yesterday it was a game which very well could have
lost and they found a way to win. How has
that switch been triggered?
Speaker 7 (43:30):
I'll tell you what. When I was with the Raiders,
we opened with the Chargers last year in Hartrot's first game,
and just being the opponent. I could feel a difference
on their sideline. You know, I know it's very subjective,
but I could feel it. But you know, Justin Herbert
put on the cape yesterday. You and I have both
seen since the rookie year that he's capable of doing that.
(43:52):
I get for some of the media, I feel like
this is the new Justin Herbert, but not it's just
the same Justin Herbert. But he had a really good.
Speaker 10 (43:57):
Team around him, and I think they're rook You know.
Speaker 7 (44:00):
Marion Hampton, He's a perfect running back for their offense.
He's just an absolute hammer. They've got a rocky tight
end and ron Day Gatston who is active yesterday, and
he gives them a receiving thread at tight end, which
they haven't had in the last couple of years, really
haven't had since Hunter Henry. So the offense is getting
starting to get moving. The defense is really strong, and
like you said, like they've played really situational sound football yesterday.
(44:21):
And on the flip side, Sean Payton teams have always
mastered situational football. That's one of his hallmarks. But for
the second week in a row, they didn't quite get it.
I mean, they had the Broncos had a lot of
penalties yesterday. They just had some plays in the fourth
quarter the last two weeks that don't translate the winning
which you don't usually see because I think the Broncos
have an excellent team. They got stars on our team,
(44:42):
especially in defense with Nick Bonito, Zach Allen, Patrick Sartan.
But the Chargers just they willed it through in the
fourth quarter. And I give a lot of credit to
that coaching staff and the players they brought in. They
got a really good football team.
Speaker 1 (44:58):
Tom let's go our guest here on the Dug Out
Show on Fox Sports Radio. Okay, let's sprinkle around the
rest of the rest of the league. I don't remember
a team blocking two field goals in one game, let
alone in the same quarter, and the second one was
a manageable one, So usually it's not even a question
(45:20):
that no one has a chance. What's going on that?
Jason Stewart, my producer, said something kind of brilliant to
me before the show. He's like, there's two things happening. Once.
Sixty plus yard field goals are kind of the norm,
not the exception, and yet block field goals are a
little bit more normal. What's going on with the kicking game, Well.
Speaker 7 (45:39):
I might I have to see the tape of I
want to see how they I mean, I know they
blocked it from the inside. I want to see where
the leakers came from to come between the snapper and
the guard or the guard and the tackle. But the
Eagles have some big, powerful men up front. And not
that that was a long kick. Typically that the.
Speaker 10 (45:56):
Longer kicks the ball coming a little.
Speaker 7 (45:58):
Bit lower and you do have a chance to block
it up the middle. But that wasn't that extraordinarily long
a kick. But yeah, I mean it's early in the season.
This is where you tend to see some special teams mistakes,
whether it's on returns with some fumbles, muff punts, or
block field goals.
Speaker 10 (46:14):
They tend to even out over time of of course
of the season.
Speaker 7 (46:18):
But the Eagles are just a really well rounded football team.
They do what they have to do to win a game.
Speaker 10 (46:23):
I thought the Rams and for the really second straight year, Chris.
Speaker 7 (46:26):
Shulaz, that coordinator defensive coordinator for the Rams, didn't that
outstanding job against the Eagles last year, did a really
good job against him yesterday until the fourth quarter, and
then the Eagles look, they I think.
Speaker 10 (46:36):
They would like to run the ball, but in the end,
like if we have to throw it, we'll throw it.
Speaker 7 (46:40):
And they do it really well. You know, Hurst through
for over two hundred yards and they made some plays
with the receivers and then you know, special teams comes
up with two big block kicks. So it's Eagles really
have a full football team offense, defense, special teams. You
saw that yesterday. They had to use it all, but
it was it was interesting to see how well the
Eagles kind of got the passing game going when they
had to get it going.
Speaker 1 (47:00):
Where are you on the touch push?
Speaker 7 (47:03):
I can't stand it. I can't stand it, but you
know my stance hasn't changed on it. I don't like
to play. I think it's a boring play and I
think if you watch how still the old line in
D line get up after the play, you can see
how taxing it is on their bodies. But to me,
the biggest thing it has nothing to do with how
good the Eagles are at it. I just don't think
it's an equitable play between the offense and the defense.
(47:25):
And a lot of it's because the offense gets forward progress,
so you know they can push as far as they can,
they get the further spot that the football goes. But
at the defense, if they push the runner back as
far as they can, you know that runner gets forward progress,
you know, no matter where the whistle was blown, So
they don't get the same spot. So I just think
it's an imbalance between the two sides that have that play.
(47:47):
I don't get caught up in people trying to penalize
the Eagles. I mean back in the nineteen seventies when
the Steelers and Raiders used to beat up receivers all
over the field, and it just wasn't good for the game.
It wasn't very visually pleasing, kind of competively imbalanced. You know,
they made the change in the secondary that you can't
do that, and it really wasn't even dead against those
two teams. It's just, you know, we're trying to find
(48:09):
a better brand of football. So I'm hoping they voted
out moving forward and has nothing to do with how
the good Eagles are And I just think it's a
it's a boring play to watch.
Speaker 1 (48:19):
Okay, Kayler Williams. There's four touchdowns do interceptions. But we
started by talking about the Cowboys as you said not
very strong on defense, Senator, that's very well said. Right,
that's incredibly they I can say that that is a
bad defense. Right now they are lost. So how seriously
can we take Caleb William's numbers considering he's playing against
a team that just last weekend Russell Wilson looked like
(48:42):
Johnny Unitis.
Speaker 7 (48:44):
Look, you have to kind of take this as a
big body to work and not just go week to week.
But obviously it's it's a positive yesterday. I just think
with Caleb, like, you know, his game is completely different
than Jared Goff's. So you know, Ben Johnson isn't going
to walk into the Bear and just run a duplication
of the Lion's offense. He can't like the receivers, the
(49:05):
tight ends, the offensive line, the quarterbacks. Certainly they have
different skill sets. So I just think as you move
through this season, you have to have some patience. Is
going to take some time for both the quarterback and
the head coach to get a feel for each other
and for Ben to get a feel for what is
Caleb really good at. You know, the Bear they ran
the ball a lot yesterday. Now they didn't get a
ton of yards from it, but at least they kept
(49:26):
the pass rush at Bay a little bit, and the
Cowboys don't have a great pass rush right now anyways.
But you know, he Caleb had a lot of define throws,
and I don't know if Caleb was ever going to
be a anticipate windows opening and release it and with
ball placement, but if you can see a receiver like
a defined read and see the open receiver, he's got
(49:47):
the big time arm talent to drill the ball in there,
and plus he has the skills to go off schedule
and run around and me be a magician. So I
think it's just both just trying to get a feel
for the offense what he's really good at and what
they to keep improving on. But certainly with a step
in the right direction for the Bears this weekend.
Speaker 1 (50:06):
I would concur with that Lions tonight against the Ravens.
What's the biggest difference you've noticed in the play calling
and the offense.
Speaker 10 (50:19):
I can't take away yet, but there's definitely there's just
going to.
Speaker 7 (50:22):
Be changes for the Lions, obviously, and I think there's
going to be a great test to see where they
are on both sides the ball with both coordinators because
to me, the Ravens have the most complete team in
the league, so both sides, offense and defense, So I
know there are lines are trying to run a lot
of the same things, which is good to me. They
have a system that works. But anytime there's a new
person in that chair, you know the game plan is
(50:43):
going to be a little bit different, and then the
game day play calling is going to be a little
bit different. It's just the nature of it. So it's
still early in the year. I don't have any major
takeaways yet, but I'm curious tonight to watch how they
can handle the Ravens because the Ravens, to me or
even though they have some injuries on defense tonight, the
Ravens are loaded on both sides, are really well coached,
so it's gonna be a great test for the lines tonight.
Speaker 1 (51:04):
