I hope you're having a great day.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Doug Gottlieb Show broadcast live every single day from sunny
southern California.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Welcome in. We'll get the football in.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
Two or so minutes. How's that two or so minutes?
That okay with you guys? Yeah, I mean kind of
big breaking story. We'll talk some Packers, we'll talk some Chargers.
We'll also talk some cowboys, Like why talk to the cowboys?
Because of the cowboys. Now you'll you'll understand upcoming. Let
me first start with the news of the day, the

(01:01):
news of the moment. Bruce Pearl's retired at Auburn. He
released a video which is on social media, just came out.
I just watched it myself, and he says, now it's
time obviously if you've been following Bruce Pearl. He has
some political aspirations. Something he said in the video which
I totally understand. He said, you know, if I told
people if I couldn't stay, if I was one hundred

(01:22):
percent committed, was an all in did have the same energy,
then I would retire.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
And there's a lot of things that people.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
Have asked me about a one year in And for
the record, I love my jobs, both of them. I'm
sitting around yesterday, I'm texting with my players and they're
so jealous because I get to talk about football. A
bunch of are Packer fans, and you know, they want
me to just evisterate everybody today, fire everybody type thing.
Not really, and we'll get to that, but the one

(01:54):
thing that really And Bruce's a friend. I coached under
him some with the Maccabiah, which is the Jewish Olympics.
His son Steven has not taken over, actually played for
my dad. We're good friends, so there's a lot of
ties there and I think ultimately Bruce Parl should be
a Hall of Famer. I don't think it's close. You know,

(02:15):
they go to two final fours at Auburn, they win champ.
I think what five SEC championships and some variety with
the regular season or postseason.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Pretty incredible.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
But it's a twenty four hour job, and for me
it's twenty one. But you know, while I'm on air,
the texts are coming. Now we have a system to
where everybody knows house got to be on fire before
you text DG during the show. But the point is
that it's a it's like your and and here's the

(02:48):
other part is now you have additional responsibilities. People believe
that all you do is coach basketball and then do interviews,
Like remember when you're a head coach. It's different at
my level, which is the lower level than Auburn at
the top of the SEC, but it's still the same
in that you have to manage people, your staff, your players,

(03:11):
your practices, your games, your donors. And for me, i'm
a CEO as well, like I have to manage all
of the budget for everything, which I know Bruce essentially does.
Even if you have people who are your GM, even
if you have people who work in administrative in those
things that at the higher level they help you out
with those things, still comes down to the n day, Like, hey, coach,

(03:32):
we only have so much money. That number is much
bigger there than it is here. What do you want
to allocate it to? And then, you know, if you've
been an unbelievable recruiter your whole life, you're not gonna
stop recruiting. I would also tell you that though they're
still recruiting well at Auburn, like, the recruiting is different
now because some kids not at our level, but some

(03:54):
kids are just going for the money and you don't
get You also don't have the time to really dep
you know, they hit the portal and you got to
make a decision, and it's speed dating. So I don't
think it's just the current era. I don't think it's
the pay for play on its own. I don't think

(04:14):
it's any one thing. I think the fact that politics
are out there, the fact that he's just got to
a final four, you're you know, I mean when we
were talking about winning one or two more games like
that doesn't make you whole as a person.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
And it's really really difficult to do.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
And I'm also guessing that the reason it was done
now was he probably want to do it at the
end of the year, but he said, if I do
at the end of the year. I want Steven to
get the job, and they said we're not. We're not
there yet with him, even though he's the associated coach.
So and Dean Smith did this with Bill Guthridge. Other
head coaches have done it where they retire right before
the year so that you have to give it to
their their chosen coach, and if he does well enough,

(04:56):
then he gets to keep the job full time for
a long time. So my opinion is college basketball lost
an absolute legendary personality and fabulous coach in a Bruce Pearl.
My guess is he goes into politics, which if he
thinks recruiting was vicious.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
He's got no idea.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
But he's a passionate guy and sometimes it just takes
passion and energy and for him something different. You know,
when you've been doing this thing for forty years, I've
been doing it for a year and a half.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
I love it. Will you be doing this thing.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
For forty years, You're probably like, Okay, I've climbed all
these mountains. Now what All right, let's get to the
National Football League also got college football to talk about,
and again, there is probably a little piece of the
college football and the fire everybody mentality will kind of
circle back to it, which I'm sure turns Bruce off,

(05:48):
turns other You know, Dabo Sweeney was king of the world.
Now all of a sudden they're struggling. Do I think
that he's gotten a little bit arrogant with this process?

Speaker 2 (05:57):
Sure?

Speaker 1 (05:58):
Do I think they don't recruit the same level. Sure,
But Dabosweeney, much like Mike Gundy. It's like two years ago,
they were really good. Actually, Clemson was pretty good last year.
So how do guys that were elite coaches for a
long period of time suddenly now we're in a new
era and they're not doing as well.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
We're not doing well at all.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Well, I mean, something tells me that the sport is
changing and you got to adapt and adjust or perish. Anyway,
we'll circle back to that. The LGX Boom Grab is

Boom X Boom.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
So the Browns beat the Packers. Why does it feel
like the Packers lost to the Browns?

Speaker 2 (06:51):
Why does it feel like that? Now?

Speaker 1 (06:53):
Part of it is this young roster, but championship teams
don't lose that game. Yesterday, third and three, three and
a half or so to go in the fourth quarter,
the Packers chose to throw the ball instead of run
the ball. They run the ball, clock runs, you know
under three minutes ago, you punt if you don't get

(07:14):
a first down. Your offensive line had Struggledrunning the football
was arduous, right, it was a tough task, and now
all of a sudden you got Micah Parsons for a
reason that makes sense. Instead, they choose to throw it
and Jordan Love throws a perfect pass to the defense.
My guess is there was miscommunication because I just don't
think you throw it that much gift wrapped to the
defense unless somebody did the wrong thing. But it's a

(07:39):
game where you got to win those. You know, you're
two and zero in your division, the chance to go
to three and oh and kind of separate yourself and
you come up short. Here's Matt lafleour head coached the Packers,
talking about the loss.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
Well, that was extremely disappointing obviously to be in a
position to win the game at the end of the
game and to have the total the script totally flip
on you with the block and then I'm getting into
field goal range. It's tough, it's tough to deal with,
but you better learn from each and every opportunity that

(08:13):
you go out there and in the wins and in
the losses, and you got to move on. One thing
that we have to get corrected is, I mean, when
you have fourteen penalties in a game, it's going to
be tough to overcome that. So we got to do
a much better job of coaching the fundamentals, the details,
and then we've got to lock in.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
Yeah, I mean, six fall starts, it's going to get
you beat. I mean, but it's one of those. You're
the Packers. You look back, you had a field goal block,
you had six fall starts, you had fourteen penalties, and
you had a really bad interception, and yeah, I get it.
Like you had two offensive linemen return from injury, but
they both left within reaggravating the injuries, and your offensive
line was just getting crushed by the Browns. Understood still

(08:52):
should have won the game and That's really probably the
story of yesterday, right, is that the best teams final.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
That's the Eagles, Right, It's that the Eagles this the
second straight year.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
I mean even in the last year in the playoffs,
would say, well, the weather was better, maybe the Rams win,
and the Rams had the they were dominating the Eagles,
but the Eagles just find a way. Heck, I'm gonna
throw on a team that I didn't think played particularly
well for a good portion of the game was the Chargers,
but they just found away late. Whereas the Packers, as

(09:26):
great as they look the first two weeks of the season,
they found a way to lose the game they rightfully
should have won. Now, some of that is young teams.
You know, you have an offensive lineman, say they go undefeated,
but he's young. Young teams will surprise you with wins
they shouldn't get and losses they shouldn't have as well.
It's not an excuse, it's reality. But also the lack

(09:47):
of whether it's discipline, youth, or whatever. All those penalties
that's gonna get s beat every time. What gets you
beat line play, turnovers, penalties, Then you know, mistakes and
special teams they lose to a team that they absolutely
positive it should be. And by the way, congrats to

(10:08):
Jay stew who picked that outright win by the Cleveland Browns.
So now he's got to make his picks every week
and we'll promote him on social media and we'll see
just how good he is.

Speaker 4 (10:17):
Oh, you're gonna you're gonna hear a little bit more
of that and our love and hate. So I'm gonna
tease the listeners. Stick around for the next hour. You're
gonna love it.

Speaker 5 (10:24):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 1 (10:36):
It's the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. So, uh,
it's a weird feeling that Jason Stewart and I have
weird feeling. What's that weird feeling, you ask, Well, I mean,

(10:56):
clemsoning became charging, right, Charging became a word used for
a team that should very well win a game, that
finds a way to lose a game, right, And yeah,
I mean that's.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Just what happened.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
And you've had playoff appearances that both the past two
coaches with the Chargers not like they've been completely inapt,
but with Harbaugh it definitely changed.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Here's John John.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
Here's Jim Harbaugh, head coach of the Chargers, after their
three Z start, talking about his quarterback Justin Herbert. All right,
all right, we'll get you that. We'll get you that
one second for.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
So, I mean, like, look, the it's just a weird
thing to watch a franchise that has been known for
a losing game finding ways to lose games instead now
finding ways to win games. Right, that's the easiest way
to explain.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
It's just strange awesome. Here here's Harbaugh on Herbert.

Speaker 6 (11:59):
I don't, I don't think I had the vocabulary to,
uh to really express how great I feel uh with
this win and and uh just admiration for for our
team and for our players and coaches. In't just everybody.
It's just another game. Three wins, three uh three games,

(12:19):
and it's taken everybody in all these games. So uh,
I mean gritty, uh spectacular, That's about the best word
I can, uh I can come up with.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
He was he was gritty, he was spectacular, And it's weird.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
Like I found myself on Herbert Island last year, where
I was trying to He was bad in the playoffs,
but they had no pass protection at all and he
had nobody to throw to.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
Right.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
So the pass protection wasn't great yesterday. But he does
have now he's got Keenan Allen back who's making plays
from another touchdown reception lab.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
But Conky is awesome. The the rookie tight ends good.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
Uh yeah, one of his two running backs blew out
his achilles.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
But the rookies a stud.

Speaker 1 (13:05):
Uh, there's a plan there, there's a confidence there. And
maybe it's harbo. I mean, Herbert was playing well last year.
Just nobody's watching. Now they're up to three, no start
a couple of nationally televised games. People are watching like,
oh yeah, justin Riberally is good. Yeah, we those of
us who know, we've known for a long time, for
a long time. Let's let's let's do this.

Speaker 2 (13:29):
Let's get to uh, let's get to our Tyrecht play
to day, shall we? All right?

Speaker 1 (13:32):
The other team that again just finds ways to win games.
As the Eagles, they just find ways to win games.
You know, they weren't great against the Cowboys. Way to win,
weren't great against Chiefs bin way to win weren't great
yesterday should have been beating down?

Speaker 2 (13:46):
What twenty six was it? Twenty six seventh to half?
I found a way. It's our Tyrecht play the day.

Speaker 1 (13:53):
For over forty years, Tyrak has been helping customers find
the right tires for how and where they drive. Ship
fast and free impack by free road has protection with
convenience slation options like mobile tireslation tyrat dot com. The
way tied buying should be. Eagles are up a point,
Rams getting ready to kick a game winning field goal
on the road uh place they played last year in
terrible weather. Fugal kicker had just had a sixty one

(14:16):
yarder block thirty eight yard are on the way. Here's
the call a the Eagles radio network.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
They blocked in the last time the bullet spotted.

Speaker 7 (14:24):
The kick is away blocked.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
It's blocked. It's bucked up by the Eagles wanting what
the is?

Speaker 4 (14:30):
Davis thirty twenty ten.

Speaker 8 (14:33):
Five touchdown came over Jeorge and Davis, are you jegging?

Speaker 4 (14:39):
Man?

Speaker 2 (14:39):
Blocked him again?

Speaker 8 (14:40):
Are you channing?

Speaker 2 (14:41):
Loan to him again? Happy? Weether seen anything like this?
Do you believe in miracles?

Speaker 9 (14:47):
The Rams are standing silent.

Speaker 2 (14:50):
They can't believe what just happened to them. That's our
Tyraq play of the day.

Speaker 7 (14:56):
Merril rees touchdown on Eagles.

Speaker 1 (15:00):
And then he would blatant rip off you guys, do
you believe in miracles? Nobody said yes, h well that's
Tom Telesco about his old team, the Chargers. We asking
about the Eagles. We ask him about Justin Herbert. We
got lots of questions for Tommy. He joins us every week.
That's in a moment first, so let me get you
Dan byer, get you quick update on everything in sports.

Speaker 2 (15:18):
Dan.

Speaker 8 (15:18):
My other favorite part was he said that you've never
seen this or what I'm paraphrasing, but we saw it
earlier in the game, and then we also saw it
two other times in Week three with dramatic field goal blocks.

Speaker 1 (15:31):
Now I do feel I do feel like there's a
Seinfeld line and they're like, well, what's the deal with
all the block field goals?

Speaker 8 (15:36):
It was crazy. The Oprah one, you get a block,
you get a block with.

Speaker 2 (15:42):
Oh I like that one too, and you get a
block and you got a block.

Speaker 8 (15:45):
Everybody that one, yeah, yes, absolutely, Browns, Jets, Eagles, oh my,
they h yeah. Crazy. It all happened within like a
twenty minute period.

Speaker 1 (16:00):
It was I mean this, Jason, you can got guys,
My way is Jason, I said that was Yesterday was
the greatest day in the history of Red Zone. Like
Nick Wright, you can say what you want about adults
don't watch red Zone to watch the game. I might
maybe I'm a child. I'm sitting there screaming at the
top of my lungs.

Speaker 2 (16:18):
It was so good, so good. Red Zone was amazing yesterday.
That's the Doug Gottlieb Show.

Speaker 1 (16:22):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio and every week we're
We're just so excited to be joined by Tom to
Leusco last twelve years, been a general manager, eleven years
with the Chargers, last year with the Raiders, and he
gives us his unique perspective what a general manager is
actually thinking, looking a lifetime football guy when he's watching
this NFL season play out. Tom, thanks so much for
joining us. Let's start with last night Giants Chiefs. So

(16:46):
the Chiefs win, but there's lots of different takeaways. Let's
let's start with the Giants. How does Russell Wilson And
I guess maybe Cowboys defense is the answer, But how
does he go from how he looked in game two
to how he looked in Game three, and then the
decisions he's making at the end of his third game
with the Giants.

Speaker 2 (17:06):
What's what's the general manager's view of Russell Wilson.

Speaker 9 (17:10):
Yeah, well, number one, you touched on it already. I
mean last week against the Cowboys, the Cowboys just aren't
real strong on defense, and Russell Wilson, I mean, Russell's one.
He's he's a great one and he has been and
a lot of times great ones. They can recharge for
a game, or recharge for a game or two, but
to do it consistently at this point of his career,

(17:31):
it's just it's a challenge. So and I'm assuming the
Giants had had to know this was coming, because it's just,
you know, Russell has been on since third team in
three years, so they could have had the expectation that
he would give them a winning starter, winning starter or
played for seventeen games. But you know, he played well
against the Cowboys last week, but different defense yesterday with

(17:52):
the Chiefs. The Chiefs have a really strong defense, they're aggressive,
they take some things away, and then you know, just
you know it's going to be an issue, right it's
Jackson Darter, whether it's Russell Wilson, the Giants offensive line,
it's just they're struggling right now and it's it's the
same five as last year in twenty twenty four, So
I can't see it changing much moving forward. And that's

(18:14):
that's that worries me. Just whoever the quarterback is, it
worries me once Dark gets in there, because Dart's going
to be in there at some point.

Speaker 2 (18:20):
Yeah, I agree.

Speaker 1 (18:22):
What about the Chiefs? You know, you had a little
dust up with Andy Reid and Kelsey that that I
don't know your view on that, but they continue to
be down wide receivers and like I get you're not.
You're just not going to get a pathetic opponent like
the Giants offense every week. What's now that you've seen

(18:42):
the Chiefs three times? What are your thoughts?

Speaker 9 (18:45):
Yeah, the the Andy Reid sideline thing with Kelsey, that
doesn't concern me at all. We've seen that before. And
I will say the second half the Chiefs played with
much more enthusiasm, intensity, whatever you want to call it.
It looked different in the second half. So whatever we've
talked about at halftime, whatever was talking about in the
sidelines in between series. It worked because I was just

(19:06):
overalled that game last night just didn't have a lot
of juice to it. I mean from a fans standpoint,
you know it's boring, the boring side, from the GM standpoint,
there's a lot of things you can take out of it.
But but you saw a different Chiefs team the second half.
But you know, offensively, they still have the same issues.
They've got the issues at both tackle spots, and I
think Josh Simmons, they're left tackle. He's going to be

(19:27):
good in time, but he's a rookie. And the receivers
just aren't quite creating the same separation as you would like.
But they found a way to win, and that's kind
of the way they roll. And they played better in
the second half, and they're a good defensive team and
that's what they're gonna have to rely on a little
bit as the offense continues to come around. It's kind
of cool to see Tae Kwan Thornton really have a
nice game. He's an interesting player in college, Like he's

(19:51):
tall but very skinny, like he was probably in the
low one eighties when he was in college, but has
big time speed and he's a really good route runner.
Sometimes it's hard to find those those fast receivers that
have really good route skills, and he has that. So
he's getting acclimated with their offense and getting acclimated with
Patrick Mahomes, and he could be somebody as we moved
through the season, could really help them out.

Speaker 1 (20:14):
Let's go to your former team, the Chargers. One of
the former teams, the Chargers, and the plays look justin
Herbert came through and it's amazing what Harbaugh has been
able to do with the mentality, right. I mean, as
a Charger fan and a friend of yours, I think
the frustrating part for it didn't happen every year because
there were some playoff years, but it did seem like

(20:35):
there was the more often than not, there was the
games that you felt like you should have won, that
you found a way to lose, whereas last night or
yesterday it was a game which very well.

Speaker 2 (20:46):
Could have lost and they found a way to win.
How has that switch been triggered?

Speaker 9 (20:51):
I'll tell you what. When I was with the Raiders,
we opened with the Chargers last year in Harvrot's first game,
and just being the opponent, I could feel a difference
on their sideline. You know, I know it's very subjective,
but I could feel it. But you know, Justin Herbert
put on the Cape yesterday. You and I have both
seen since his rookie year that he's capable of doing that.

(21:13):
I get for some of the media, I feel like
this is the new Justin Herbert, but now it's just
the same Justin Herbert. But he has a really good
team around him, and I think they're rookie O'mrion Hampton.
He's a perfect running back for their offense. He's just
an absolute hammer. They've got a rookie tight end and
ron Day Gatston who is active yesterday, and he gives
them a receiving thread at tight end, which they haven't
had in the last couple of years, really haven't had
since Hunter Henry. So the offense is getting starting to

(21:35):
get moving. The defense is really strong, and like you said,
like they've played really situational sound football yesterday. And on
the flip side, Sean Payton teams have always mastered situational football.
That's one of his hallmarks. But for the second week
in a row, they didn't quite get it. I mean,
they had the Broncos had a lot of penalties yesterday.
They just had some plays in the fourth quarter the

(21:57):
last two weeks that don't translate the winning which you
don't usually see because I think the Broncos have an
excellent team. They got stars on our team, especially in
defense with Nick Bonito, Zach Allen, Patrick Sartan. But the
Chargers just they willed it through in the fourth quarter.
And I give a lot of credit to that coaching
staff and the players they brought in. They got a
really good football team.

Speaker 1 (22:19):
Tom plesco our guest here on the Doug Gottlieb Show
on Fox Sports Radio. Okay, let's sprinkle around the rest
of the rest of the league. I don't remember a
team blocking two field goals in one game, let alone
in the same quarter, and the second one was a
manageable one, so usually it's not even a question that

(22:41):
no one has a chance. What's going on that? Jason Stewart,
my producer, said something kind of brilliant to me before
the show. He's like, there's two things happening.

Speaker 2 (22:50):
Once.

Speaker 1 (22:51):
Sixty plus yard field goals are kind of the norm,
not the exception, and yet blockfield goals are a little
bit more normal.

Speaker 2 (22:57):
What's going on with the kicking game.

Speaker 9 (23:00):
Well, I I have to see the tape of I
want to see how they I mean, I know they
blocked it from the inside. I want to see where
the leakers came from. They come between the snapper and
the guard or the guard and the tackle. But the
Eagles have some big, powerful men up front. And not
that that was a long kick. Typically that the longer kicks,
the ball comes a little bit lower and you do
have a chance to block it up the middle. But

(23:22):
that wasn't that extraordinarily long a kick. But yeah, I
mean it's early in the season. This is where you
tend to see some some special teams mistakes, whether it's
on returns with some fumbles, muff punts, or block field goals.
They tend to even out over time of the course
of the season. But the Eagles are just a really
well rounded football team. They do what they have to

(23:43):
do to win a game. I thought the Rams and
for the really second straight year, Chris Shulaz, that coordinator
defensive coordinator for the Rams, didn't that outstanding job against
the Eagles last year, did a really good job against
him yesterday until the fourth quarter, and then the Eagles
look they I think they would like to run the ball,
but in the end, like if we have to throw it,
will throw it. And they do it really well. You know,
Hurst through for over two hundred yards and they made

(24:04):
some plays with the receivers and then you know special
teams comes up with two big block kicks. So it's
Eagles really have a full football team offense, defense, special teams.
You saw that yesterday. They had to use it all,
but it was it was interesting to see how well
the Eagles kind of got the passing game going when
they had to get it going.

Speaker 2 (24:21):
Where are you on the touch push?

Speaker 9 (24:24):
I can't stand it. I can't stand it, but you
know my stance hasn't changed on it. I don't like
to play. I think it's a boring play and I
think if you watch how still the old line in
D line get up after the play, you can see
how taxing it is on their bodies. But to me,
the biggest thing it has nothing to do with how
good the Eagles are at it. I just don't think
it's an equitable play between the offense and the defense.

(24:45):
And a lot of it's because the offense gets forward progress,
so you know they can push as far as they can,
they get the further spot that the football goes. But
at the defense, if they push the runner back as
far as they can, you know that runner gets forward
progress no matter where the whistle was blown, so they
don't get the same spot. So I just think it's
an imbalance between the two sides that have that play.

(25:08):
I don't get caught up in people trying to penalize
the Eagles. I mean back in the nineteen seventies when
the Steelers and Raiders used to beat up receivers all
over the field, and it just wasn't good for the game.
It wasn't very visually pleasing, kind of competitively imbalanced. You know,
they made the change in the secondary that you can't
do that, and it really wasn't a vent dead against
those two teams. It's just, you know, we're trying to

(25:30):
find a better brand of football. So I'm hoping they
voted out moving forward and has nothing to do with
how the good Eagles are And I just think it's
a boring play to watch.

Speaker 1 (25:40):
Okay, Kayler Williams sohws four touchdowns dow interceptions. But we
started by talking about the Cowboys, as you said, not
very strong on defense, Senator, that's very well said, right,
that's incredibly they I can say that that is a
bad defense right now they are lost. So how seriously
can we take Kayleb William's numbers considering he's playing against
a team that just last weekend Russell Wilson looked like

(26:03):
Johnny and iis.

Speaker 9 (26:05):
Look, you have to kind of take this as a
big body to work and not just go week to week.
But obviously it's it's a positive yesterday. I just think
with Caleb, like, you know, his game is completely different
than Jared Goff's. So you know, Ben Johnson isn't going
to walk into the Bears and just run a duplication
of the Lions offense. You can't like the receivers, the

(26:26):
tight ends, the offensive line, the quarterback. Certainly they have
different skill sets. So I just think as you move
through this season, you have to have some patience. Is
going to take some time for both the quarterback and
the head coach to get a feel for each other
and for Ben to get a feel for what is
Caleb really good at. You know that the Bear they
ran the ball a lot yesterday. Now they didn't get
a ton of yards from it. But at least they

(26:47):
kept the pass rush at Day a little bit, and
the Cowboys don't have a great pass rush right now anyways.
But you know, he Caleb had a lot of define throws,
and I don't know if Caleb was ever going to
be a anticipate windows opening and release it and with
ball placement, but if you can see a receiver like
a defined read and see the open receiver, he's got

(27:08):
the big time arm talent to drill the ball in there,
and plus he has the skills to go off schedule
and run around and be a magician. So I think
it's just both just trying to get a feel for
the offense what he's really good at and what they
have to keep improving on. But certainly with a step
in the right direction for the Bears this weekend.

Speaker 1 (27:28):
I would concur with that Lions tonight against the Ravens.
What's the biggest difference you've noticed in the play calling
and the offense.

Speaker 9 (27:40):
I can't take away yet, but there's definitely there's just
going to be changes for the Lions, obviously, and I
think there's going to be a great test to see
where they are on both sides the ball, with both
coordinators because to me, the Ravens have the most complete
team in the league, so both sides, offensive, defense, so
I know there are lines are trying to run a
lot of the same things, which is good to me.
They have a system that works. But anytime there's a

(28:02):
new person in that chair, you know the game plan
is gonna be a little bit different, and then the
game day play calling is going to be a little
bit different. It's just the nature of it. So it's
still early in the year. I don't have any major
takeaways yet, but I'm curious tonight to watch how they
can handle the Ravens. And the Ravens to me or
even though they have some injuries on defense tonight, the
Ravens are loaded on both sides. They're really well coached,

(28:22):
so it's gonna be a great test for the Lions tonight.

Speaker 1 (28:25):

Let's get to a game.

Speaker 5 (29:42):
This is game time. On the Doug Gottlieb Show.

Speaker 2 (29:49):
Dan't buy what you got, Doug.

Speaker 5 (29:51):
The game today is big deal, little deal.

Speaker 2 (29:54):
No deal?

Speaker 8 (29:55):
All right, six scenarios here, big deal, little deal or
no deal. The New York Giants had coach Bryan Dabole
said today that they are evaluating everything. When asked about
the quarterback position, a little deal.

Speaker 1 (30:08):
I mean, look, they saw it. I mean again, if
we had to be fair to Russell Wilson. I know
this is really hard for us as sports fans because
we all react what we saw last, you know, but
what we saw last was terrible. He was not good
and made a really bad decision at the end of
the game. Okay, but the week before he was spectacular.
I'll granted it was against the Cowboys, Okay, so you

(30:30):
gotta take it with a grain salt, but he was really,
really good. Everybody knows they want to play Jackson Dart.
I don't think the plan is to play Jackson Dart
right now. So it's an honest an. So we're gonna
look at it, but probably circle back to Yeah, you know,
he's actually played pretty well here, probably one and a
half of the three games we're not pulling for Jackson

(30:51):
Dart just yet.

Speaker 7 (30:51):
This is my question.

Speaker 4 (30:52):
What's the benefit of sticking with him, both pr wise
and job security wise? Well, because he only keep a
job to bring in the rookie and take a hill
Mary uh No.

Speaker 1 (31:04):
I would say for day ball, yes, No, I mean
I'm sure there is. They have a plan lined out
and look, if management says you got to play them,
then they play them. But I would guess this is
all according to plan, and right now they have massive
offensive line problems. So you put Jackson Dart, who's you know,
never played an NFL snap before in his life, behind

(31:24):
that offensive line, and that's.

Speaker 2 (31:26):
That's not good either. So what's the benefits?

Speaker 1 (31:30):
I think the first thing is you you give Jackson
Dart more and more time to feel comfortable with how
all the operation works. At some point in time, he'll
start Russell Wilson in the second half of bad games
more often, more and more snaps.

Speaker 2 (31:43):
Still becomes obvious.

Speaker 1 (31:47):
The other part is you can't take him out once
you start him. You're not gonna pull him and sit him,
So you do it later in the season. Go ahead, Dan,
I'm sorry.

Speaker 8 (31:54):
Yeah, this is this isn't just a Jackson Dark question
because it is a Russell Wilson question because the Giants
could just play Jameis Winston. And if you play Jameis
Winston and if Jackson Dart is your backup, then now
Russell Wilson is your emergency quarterback and you have completely
turned the page on him. I actually think that aspect
of it adds another layer to this drama because.

Speaker 2 (32:18):
I didn't think of that that's go ahead because.

Speaker 8 (32:21):
Yeah, just because I think you're right that they don't
want to turn it over to Jackson Dart right now,
but it may be the only way to save Brian
Dable and Joe Shane's job. Is if Jackson Dart starts
right now, if it's just about winning games and getting
a W in the win column, then you may want
to play Jameis Winston and then cash out and move
on from Russell Wilson.

Speaker 1 (32:42):
Well, you know, I've never been one to hate to
say I told you so, But I told you so. Like,
Russell Wilson's not a starter in the NFL. It's a
really hard one because he has such an impressive resume
you feel like you have to start him, but it's
just not.

Speaker 2 (32:56):
He only wants to go to place so he's going
to get.

Speaker 1 (32:57):
The first opportunity to start, first writer of refusal and
this is the end of the road for him as
a starter. Doesn't mean he won't play in the NFL.
He had to be a backup and then assume a
starting role. But like this is this is fourth team
and what six years? Seven years?

Speaker 2 (33:13):
It's over. It's over.

Speaker 8 (33:15):
Big deal, little deal or no deal. Like Caleb Williams
threw four touchdown passes against the Cowboys and his former
head coach Dallas defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus.

Speaker 1 (33:24):
Well, Matty Everblus is struggling, but you know he's taking
over a defense that was designed by Dan Quinn. And
then you know Zimmra was there last year. So yeah,
third decoordinator in three years is hard. But I don't
know how you couldn't say it's a big deal. A
guy who's been struggling four touchdowns, no interceptions against Cowboys.

Speaker 2 (33:45):
It's a big deal. It's not.

Speaker 1 (33:46):
You don't put it on his tombstone, right he threw
four touchdowns in twenty five against the non playoff Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 2 (33:54):
No, but it's a big.

Speaker 8 (33:55):
Step, big deal, little deal or no deal. The Eagles
back door cover over the Rams yesterday on that blocked
field goal return for a touchdown.

Speaker 1 (34:06):
I mean, obviously it's a big deal. It's crazy turnaround.
I don't know financially how impactful it was, but I'm
gonna go little deal, little deal.

Speaker 8 (34:16):
I ran into in the hallways of Fox Sports Radio
yesterday and I picked the Rams. I'm not sure who
you picked, Doug or Jason or Sam picked, but multiple
people when the Rams were up twenty six to seven
were glad to offer that they had picked the Rams
in this contest, and then not only to have the
Rams not win, but then not cover. I would have

(34:38):
to think that there are a lot of people on
that side.

Speaker 2 (34:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (34:43):
I mean, you're in LA and it is the Eagles,
and everybody hates the Eagles and they know it. They
don't care, So it probably but it probably feels bigger.
But everyone's talking about the bad beat part of element
to it, which is interesting.

Speaker 8 (34:57):
Because you think, like, oh, even if he misses it,
still the Rams cover oluffer if it's blocked, that goes
out of bounds, or if it's just a mess, but
instead you get that bounce up and let me ask you,
this was it was it?

Speaker 2 (35:09):
Who was it? Who was it? Was it the bear?

Speaker 1 (35:11):
Who was it last week who didn't kick it out
of the end zone? Who is the last week who
threw their their upper point? It might have been Monday
Night foot one of the Monday night football games where
they're up a point and they went for two and
they're only six seconds left, And I was like, that's
a terrible play because if you go for two and
you throw the football, if it gets intercepted, they run

(35:32):
it back. That's the only way they can beat you,
the only way they can beat you.

Speaker 8 (35:36):
Sure, Jason, you're gonna say something.

Speaker 7 (35:40):
On the the the the punt blocker side, wasn't the
smart play? Just to sit down? Like that was another aspect,
Like the only reason they covered, I think is because
of the selfish play of the special team selfish.

Speaker 8 (35:56):
So it wasn't like they would have to kick off
back again to the ram.

Speaker 7 (36:00):
But what if they do like a Leon Webs and
run the ball back the.

Speaker 2 (36:03):
Other Yes, it does open up the possibility of that happening.

Speaker 8 (36:09):
Sure that I like so much, Like did you pick
the rams? Jason? Because I like I think of the
same way, Like why not just fall on it? Why
not just cover it up and call it good. Uh,
the worst possible, but you could suffer a thing man crazy.

Speaker 1 (36:29):
Worst ever, I'll tell you the worst ever. I don't
know what the line was, but I'll take the worst
last ever.

Speaker 8 (36:34):
I think the when the team tries to throw a
bunch of laterals to try to score, and then the
defensive team like picks up the fumble and then runs
it back back like that, I think is is the worst.

Speaker 2 (36:49):
Oh what are the on side kick that they run
back for a touchdown?

Speaker 8 (36:51):
Yeah, Cowboys did that last year. Big deal, little dealer,
no deal, Doug. Then Mike Gundy says he one hundred
percent believes he will be the head coach at Oklahoma
State after the twenty twenty five season.

Speaker 1 (37:06):
It's a little deal. I thought he made a mistake
Friday night not saying the exact same thing. But I
also think that we'll discuss the next hour. People have
no idea. You have so many idiots on television on Twitter,
like he gutted his staff. They're obviously not playing well.
They have a backup quarterback in there, and you know

(37:27):
a guy's rightfully embarrassed, but to get rid of him,
it's like forty fifty million dollars plus twenty five thirty
million dollars to build a new roster like it's not happening.
They don't have the money. And that same time.

Speaker 5 (37:41):
Game This is game time on The Doug Gottlieb Show.
