Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Boom, What Up America,
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. M m m m
m m m m m m m m m h.
We'll get to what Kareem abdul Jabbar has said about
(00:21):
Kareem abdul Jabbar without saying Creem abdul Jabbar upcoming in
the show Doug gottlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. But let's
get to the biggest breaking story of the day. Uh.
The cover up, as they say, is worse, always worse
than the crime. The cover up is worse than the crime.
(00:41):
What has undone so many in office, what has undone
many in um, in sports is covering up for other people,
sometimes covering for yourself. You see why a that that happens.
But let's let's simply look at Let's simply and I
(01:05):
I want to make sure that we understand before I
mentioned another name, that I am not comparing the alleged
crimes of a now former Ohio state assistant. Okay, it's
very very important that I am not mentioning that I'm
not saying anything about about the I'm not comparing the
(01:27):
crimes per se, right because um, because what took place
at Penn State. What took place at Penn State um
is not only awful and reprehensible, disgusting, but it affected
far more people. But I'm not gonna sit there and
(01:48):
compare that and what a former assistant at Ohio State
are accused of in terms of the crime, the grievousness
of the crimes. That that's just not smart. I would not,
I will not do that. We'll not do it, but
but I will point out. I will point out that,
(02:10):
by my estimation, that the the smartest, fairly educated. And
I'm not gonna sit here and tell you I know
more than everybody, but I know enough, and I've been
around enough to have a pretty good sense of why
Joe Paterno the second time allegations were made about Jerry
Sandusky the second time around, why he didn't make it public,
(02:37):
go to the cops and completely out his defensive coordinate. Okay,
that's because the cover up becomes worse than the crime.
The comparison between Sandusky and Paterno. Sandusky bringing down the
paternal legacy is at least a reasonable one for his
(03:00):
ax Smith and what happens with urban Meyer. Right from
this standpoint, Jerry Sandusky had previously been uh previously been
investigated for abuse of a youngster before the alleged time
in which Mike mcquerye walked in and saw Sandusky in
(03:23):
a shower with a boy in two thousand one. And
if you want to ask yourself, why wouldn't Joe Paterno
go to the cops. Why wouldn't he do more? It's
because the more you dug, the more they would realize
that Joe Paterno had to on some level have known
about a previous investigation of Sandusky. And you sit there
(03:45):
and you say to yourself, how would he have known?
It was a private matter. Joe Paterno was State College Pennsylvania.
We had an expression when I was in school that
if you break wind on campus, they smell it in
the office. Joe Paterno, you better believe he knew what
was going on with his assistants, especially if they're being
(04:06):
accused of some sort of heinous crime like sexual abuse
of a youngster. And so once once you go back
in two thousand one, now the sudden your pot committed, man,
were you know? And so what happened afterwards? Sandusky had
probably explained his way out of it. The first time.
In the second time. Now the sudden Paterno is like
(04:27):
you gotta step away, you gotta retire, and we'll say
you're going to spend more time with your foundation. And
that's what happened. So what happened earlier today is fascinating.
Brett McMurphy, who is a friend, is going to join
us in fifteen minutes. Talented reporter who uh used to
work at ESPN posted his stuff on Facebook. I believe
(04:48):
he's gonna begin working very soon for Stadium Sports company
that I do basketball games four which appear on on Facebook.
Stadium Sports had to sit down interview with Courtney Smith,
that's the ex wife of Zach Smith, the now former
assistant coach at Ohio State. Quote all the wives new
(05:10):
they all did every single one. Courtney Smith told Brett
McMurphy that go back to the Florida days. And and
Smith said that Hiram Defrees, who's a special assistant, the
head coach to Ohio State, has been a confident to
Urban Meyer for years. Told her in two thousand nine
(05:31):
not to pursue charges against Zack Smith after an incident
in Florida. He said, if you dropped the charges that
if you if you don't drop the charges, Zach will
never coach again. He's never hit you before, he was drinking,
He'll probably never do it again. You should think about
giving him a second chance. She did not press charge
in two thousand nine. Zack Smith was investigating two thousand
(05:54):
fifteen for suspicion of domestic violence after an incident that
resulted in unspecified injuries and showed evidence of sustained abuse.
There are records you go back and at Big Big
ten media days July. I never thought about I never
thought about anything, Meyer said in the decision of fire Smith,
(06:14):
it was a very tough call Courtney Smith. Shelley said
she was gonna tell Urban. I said, that's fine, you
should tell Urban. In the video posted a Twitter by
Stadium Sports, Courtney Smith said that Shelley Meyer never confirmed
that she told her husband of the abuse, So that's
the plausible deniability. But here's the comparison between Ohio State
(06:37):
and Penn State. And I'm not comparing the two crimes.
I don't think you should, I mean, ever touch a woman.
I think you're cretan. If you had lay a hand
on a woman, you you just there's there's obviously something
wrong with you, your ability to manage your own anger.
You need to go to counseling. You need to get help.
(06:58):
You don't need to be coaching uncture. But I'm not
going to compare the grievousness of the two crimes. Here's
the thing. If he abused during two thousand nine, and
urban Meyer became aware, and there's a likelihood he became aware,
and he's on the staff, and in two thousand fifteen
it happened again, now he's pot committed, pod committed. Terry Thomas,
(07:23):
an attorney who used to represent Courtney Smith, said that
Columbus attorney Larry James reached out to him in two
thousand and fifteen seeking information about the incident between the two.
James serves served as o'ho states lead counsel to represent
student athletes and n C investigations. He called me and said,
how bad is it? I said it's bad, and I
assume he wanted information that he could report back to
(07:46):
his client Thomas again, the attorney confirmed this conversation with
James to ESPN. Urban Meyer said in July that he
was unaware of the two thousand nine instant and that
he and Shelley got involved by talking to the Smiths.
After police finished their investigation, Meyer said he called his
(08:07):
boss after learning about it and then waited to hear
back from investigators. He said the recommendation made to him
at the time was for counseling for Smith and to
move forward. I want to believe that urban Meyer did
everything by the book. I want to believe that he
did the right thing, and that whatever he what he knew,
and when he knew, when he knew it, and what
(08:28):
he did about it are all by the books. And
I will tell you that if urban Meyer keeps his job,
it's because he did it by the book. This reminds
me in many ways of Dana Altman at Oregon, which
there were three players accused of sexual assault. It didn't
rise to the level of a criminal case, that a
criminal charge were never brought against the players, and so
(08:49):
he never he did not remove them from the team,
even though he knew there was an investigation regarding some
of his players. People locally, uh, very well known own
sportswriter with the Daily Oregonian or with the Oregonian whatever,
said that he should be fired. And my point was
then as it is now, had Dana Alman done anything
(09:11):
that he was that he was told not to do
by by school lawyers, he would have been fired. And
the reason he kept his job forget about how successful
he was going to the file four, that doesn't even matter.
The fact that he kept his job tells you he
did what he was supposed to do. Sometimes these guys
are handcuffed by school's lawyers and they're not allowed to
(09:31):
speak to it, not allowed to speak to the coaches.
They have to watch, they have to simply be go
between a lot like what Paterno would like us to believe.
So I'm willing to take a breath, take a pause,
and find out what he knew, when he knew it,
and what he did about it, and what the school
lawyers told him. But when he said he didn't know
(09:53):
anything about two thousand nine and his right hand guy did,
when his wife was told about and we were led
to believe she didn't she didn't tell him, it makes
you wonder is this another paternal situation or even another
Jim Trestle situation where you don't get fired because you
(10:17):
fired an assistant coach who allegedly uh beat up his
his his wife and now his ex wife. You get
fired because you lied to your bosses, because you lied
to the press, because you covered up, because you deceived.
The cover up does become as bad or worse than
the crime, even if you never laid a hand on
somebody else. Again, and this is really important, because I
(10:42):
made the mistake of completely and totally following a report
that was made earlier this year in regards to Sean Miller.
That doesn't mean the report's not true. I just haven't
seen anything factual to prove to me it's not true.
But but I will tell you this, if he did know,
(11:06):
if he did lie about it to the media, if
he did deceive us, if he didn't do anything to
an assistant coach there seeing there seems to be physical
evidence that he abused his wife multiple times. No matter
how successful rban Meyer is and has been as as
(11:28):
a head coach at Florida Bowling Green utah Oha State
in this day and age, you're gonna lose his job.
Uh here comes Penn State guy. You have no clue
what you're talking about in reference to Joe Paterno, and
your facts are wrong. You're just stirring the pot stick
(11:48):
to the study of the day. Urban is a liar
in the n c A, will do, will not do
a thing, just like Michigan State. I love Penn State guy.
One of the most egregious, sickest crimes against children in
the history of collegiate athletics took place on their campus
(12:11):
and sometimes in their locker room from a former assistant
coach and a well regarded assistant coach at Penn State.
The n c A, as I said at the time,
UH stepped over their purview to make a point out
of it. They did. It was a wrong thing at
the n c A did, but they did it because they,
like everybody else in college sports, was really upset. We
(12:31):
were really grossed out by it, and we were appalled
that Jerry Sandusky was allowed to remain anywhere around the
program once anyone found out that he had come anywhere
close to abusing it, abusing a youngster. And so you
you want the same n c A to do wrong
by Michigan State or by Ohio State. That that's the logic. Okay, good, okay,
(12:57):
Penn State guy, or excuse me, Patty Penn State lady.
Two wrongs do not make it right. Doug Gotlin Show,
Fox Sports Radio. I'm not gonna sit here and do
bummer college football discussion. I'm excited about the season, but
this is a big story, a big story. We will
talk some Major League baseball with Ken Rosenthal. He'll join
(13:18):
us at four on the East coast, one twenty on
the West coast. John Middlecoff, former NFL scouting host of
three Now podcast and the Herd podcast network, is gonna
join us at five twenty. That's to twenty on the
West coast. We get some college football, we get some
pro football, um get some some baseball as well to
talk about. But coming up next Brett McMurphy. We'll join
(13:40):
us college football insider from Stadium Network who broke this
story and broke the story about Zack Smith's alleged abuse
going back before he was fired. That that's upcoming. Online
car shopping can be confusing, not anymore. With true Price
from True Car Now, you can know the exact price
you'll pay for your next vehicle. So is it true Car,
you enjoy more confident card buying experience. What did he know,
(14:03):
when did he know? And why didn't he do something
about it? We'll get to what's going on with Urban
Meyer at the Ohio State University with Brett McMurphy, who
broke the story earlier today. That's next in the Doug
Gotlib Show Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. He broke
the story last week, he questioned Meyer last week, and
then just today he almost broke the Internet using his
(14:26):
Facebook page because he's not yet an employee of Stadium Sports,
formerly of ESPN and always of Oklahoma State. Bret McMurphy,
talented college football reporter, joining us here on the Doug
Gotlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. All right, let's go.
Let's go with the the chronology of events, Brett, before you, um,
(14:49):
before we get to today and what what's next? Um,
take me back to I guess this is like a
week and a half ago. Zack Smith was still on
the staff. Correct, Yeah, Doug, So I was in Chicago
for Big ten media days and on Monday I reported
Monday morning that Zack Smith had been arrested in two
(15:09):
thousand nine, when he was a graduate assistant at Florida
on Urban Meyer staff. He was arrested for aggravated assault
on a pregnant female. His wife, Courtney, was eight to
ten weeks pregnant. He actually assaulted her on a on
their one year anniversary. She ultimately did not press charges
because him to Freeze, who was on Meyer staff at
(15:30):
Florida's time and has been aligned with Meyer for the
last twenty years, including at Ohio State now, basically convinced
her to drop the charges. Said if you, if you,
if you press charges, he will be he will be fired,
he won't be able to work. You're not gonna he
won't have a job. You're their young couple. So she agreed.
(15:51):
So then we fast forward to Monday. I find out
the previous Friday that Zack Smiths had been served the
domestic violence civil Order, which means for the next five
years he can't get within five feet of his x wife,
And it says on the document that these are given
to individuals basically fearing for their life for domestic violence.
(16:13):
So Monday morning, I reported the Florida incident, which had
not was a public record which had not been reported before.
The protection order also was a public documents that had
not been reported before. So I reported both of those
Monday in Chicago. Monday morning at eight o'clock, Ohio State
puts out a release a statement. An hour later, this
(16:35):
is a personnel matter. We will usually don't comment on
these things, and basically that's it. At five o'clock that night,
I didn't reported about domestic violence incident. Fifty minutes later,
they fired Zack Smith. Tuesday at Big ten Media Days,
urban Meyer says, asked about incident, we had no knowledge.
(16:55):
He's exact quote was, I don't know why someone would
create a story. So he basically said, I made it
about a thin air. I asked him if if I
made up this story in the incident didn't occur, why
did you fire him? Fifteen minutes after I reported it,
he said that ship has sailed. I'll talk about this
year's team. Ironically, an hour after Ohio State media availability
(17:18):
ended in Chicago, the pal Ohio Police Report Department, which
was the document that I obtained was from. They then
released it publicly that showed that there was not only one,
but two domestic violent incidents was Zack Smith and his
ex wife Cordney. After that, I just continued to report.
I followed leads. I was eventually able to get Courtney
(17:42):
Smith ahold of her, and she she agreed to talk
to me. I was in Columbis, Ohio. I met with
her for two days. She showed me hundreds of text
messages between her and the Ohio State coaching wives that
showed that not only they knew about it, but their
husband knew about it. She showed me dozen't the photos
(18:02):
from the abuse that she suffered under Zack Smith. UM.
I talked to Zack Smith's attorney this morning. I talked
to her former attorney. I just want to make things.
Make one thing very clear. Everything in my report is
one documented it's direct quotes, it's police report, it's emails,
it's text messages, it's photos. There is not one unnamed
(18:24):
bit of information from an unnamed source in my story.
And so basically, once I had all that, then I
reported it. And then what's going to happen? Is probably
your next question. I have no earthly idea. UM. Okay,
let's let's start with uh. Let's let's let's say, why
would why would you hold on to Zack Smith after
(18:44):
the two thousand nine thing like that? Okay, if after
two thousand nine, And that's a great question, Doug is
because Zach Smith was Earl Bruce's grandson, and urban Meyer
even said this at Big ten Media Day in Chicago,
that what Earl Bruce meant to him. He basically said,
he's the second most important male figure in his life
(19:07):
next to his father. Earl Bruce meant a great, great
deal to him. So that's why he hired him at Florida. Actually,
Zack Smith walked on at Bowling Green to play football
when Urban Meyer was a coach there. And then Meyer
went to Florida and hired Zack Smith is a quality
control assistant and then a grad assistant. So he was
(19:28):
on the staff for five years. He then went to Marshall,
then went to Temple. When Ohio State comes, When Ohio
State hires Meyer, he returns to coaching. In twelve, he
hires Zack Smith as his um wide receivers coach. Then
the incidents happened. There's incidents in teen that Courtney did
not report to the police. There's twenty fifteen incidents. So
(19:50):
so the question is why would he still keep him
on the staff when all that stuff happened? And I
asked I asked Courtney that question, and she she had
a pretty good answer, and maybe she knows. She said,
Zack once told me if he ever got fired and
this all comes out, I will take everyone at Ohio
State down, So maybe that's why he remained on the
(20:13):
staff so long. Again, I don't know. I don't know
what what Zack is referring to Courtney. I believe she knows,
but she again she doesn't have any evidence of it,
and I'm not going to go with hearsay. Um, so
we'll have to see what happens in the coming day. Um. Okay,
there's this is where it's he sounds lovely by the way.
He just sounds like a completely honorable human being, doesn't
(20:35):
he Right? He beats his wife. He beats his wife
and then placeably threatens blackmail on everybody who he works
works with in case uh, in order to protect himself
from being fired for beating his wife. Like, just sounds
like a lovely guy. There's there's worse things that I
can't share because I just can't because of various reasons.
But there's worse things than that. Um. But yeah, you're
(20:58):
going down the right trail here here. This is This
is an honest question that I have, and I hope
nobody's offended by it. But I do think that there's
a reality to it. But by which I ask it? Um,
I've been I have I have a couple of friends
who have had really toxic relationships, really toxic where yes,
the guy is totally out of line, but the but
(21:20):
the the wife or the girlfriend is really out of
line as well. And this is just kind of how
they roll, right, Like I had an assistant coach and
hasn't notre Dame. He was fired for domestic violence. Turned
out that he didn't even and again, I know this
is different. He never hit his wife. She actually beat
him and he had defense wounds, but just because it
(21:40):
was an ugly story they got rid of him. Is
what's what's the level of toxicity from her? Can can
you tell whether or not she is simply trying to
solve the problem being a good wife or she part
of the toxic or the former relationships toxic problems. Well,
I think there's a big difference between saying somebody's out
of line and abuse. Mean she was again they were.
(22:02):
It was their one year wedding anniversary. He comes home
drawn from a party bringing with another with another girl
right bringing Urban Buyers secretary who he's calling baby and
wants her to spend the night with them, and she's like, no,
are you kidding? Get out of here. She drives the woman.
How he comes back, She's like, what are you screwing
around on me? They get in an argument. I'm sure
they yelled in different things. He grabs her and throws
(22:23):
her against the wall. The police came out and investigated.
He was arrested for that. Again. He was served a
civil a domestic violent civil protection order which physically which
basically with stage from the document the victim reports excuse
me us throwing. Basically, it's given to individuals that are
(22:46):
fearful of their lives because of domestic violence. They don't
a judge doesn't make this ruling based on hearsay or
any window. There's got to be a lot of different
different incidents. Um I compared it at least, and I
know the crimes are different, Brett, but but some of
this has a little bit of the Sandusky thing in
that there was a previous investigation and it went away,
(23:09):
and then it came back up, and by then you're
kind of pot committed to Jerry Sandusky and now you're
left kind of scrambling. That's my sense of what really
happened in Penn State. Hecky even go back to Jim
Trustle and it wasn't It wasn't the players selling the
gold pants that got him fired. It was the lying
to his butt, lying to Jean Smith that got that
(23:29):
got him fired. Um is, can can you compare previous
things with coaches to what you're in the process and
continuing to investigate? Well, I mean, obviously those are much
different situations. But you're right on one very important important part. Um.
It's and it's you know, going back to Richard Nixon
(23:51):
for people old enough to remember who, it's not the crime,
it's the cover up. And again, if if urban Meyer
at the Press friends in Chicago simply says you know
something else, you know what we we We were told
about this, the police investigated it, there were no charges,
So that's why we kept Zack on the staff. Now
(24:14):
that there's this new information about the protection order came
back and now we feel like we need to make
a move, then that's fine. But he went out on
the edge of a cliff and said, I had no knowledge,
I didn't know about this. Why would somebody make this up?
And you're right, ultim only that maybe this demise um
by basically saying it didn't happen, when obviously there's tons
(24:37):
of evidence that indicates otherwise. Is it is it plausible
that he didn't know? Okay, Doug, I'll just I'll paint
this scenario. Okay, Woody Hayes Athletic Center. You've got every
assistant coach in the building, You've got every secretary, You've
got every staff member that knows what happened. You've got
(24:58):
Zack Smith's attorney, who has represented Ohio State student athletes
when they dealt with tattoo Gate back in two thousand eleven.
He Zack Smith's attorney. He has also represented other Ohio
State players when they have issues with the law or
with the n c a A. He knows about it.
(25:18):
There are police reports that are public documents in pal Ohio.
That's some reporter from Tampa, Florida. Myself was able to
uncover all these people know about it. Urban Meyer's wife
knows about it. Who Urban even said at Big ten
media days, how much he means to her, how much
he confides in her. I rely on her for everything.
(25:39):
Everybody knew about this, yet urban Meyer didn't. So you
answer me, did he know about it? Um? I'd like
to think that the culture five years ago would have
been such or ten years ago as such. But I
can't think. I mean, this makes me think he he
won't survive it. Like we are, we are in a
(26:00):
culture to which finally we are cleaning up UM, not
just domestic violence or sexual ha harrassment at work, but
people who cover up domestic violence or sexual harrassment at work.
Could you could you gauge? Could you gauge your own senses? Bret,
You've been doing this a long time. Brett McMurphy joining
us UH formerly of ESPN soon to be Stadium Sports,
(26:21):
has broken this story about Zack Smith, former assistant Ohio
State and and what and when it appears that urban
Meyer knew about the abuse of his now former wife. UM,
if you if you had to take a guess as
to whether or not urban Meyer survives, what, what would
it be? Well, I would say it's unlikely, not necessarily
because he lied about it, but because now with the
(26:41):
domestic violence issues, and like you said, it's a lot
more sensitive. Now You've also got a couple of things
that have kind of um it could come into play,
and that is that did Ohio State violate any Title
nine issues? And also there's the school UM sexual Missconduct
Policy UM Shelley or as a registered nurses and she's
(27:01):
actually employed by the Ohio State College of Nursing. So
did she did she violate the Sexual Misconduct Policy Code
knowing abuse was being committed by one of the employees
at Ohio State. You know that's something you know, I'm
sure the lawyers are looking at right now. But I
think ultimately that actually maybe his I'm doing more than
(27:25):
his line, but certainly his line. I don't think it's
going to help. Is that a firable offense? I guess
it depends school to school? Um, but don't know. Doesn't
town line only only? Uh? In regards to the students,
It's regards to the employees as well. Employees, Yeah, they
have a duty to report any any any sexual misconduct
(27:45):
incidents or different things like that. It's in the it's
on the actually on the school's website, I thought this morning. Um,
and it it specifies specifically employees. So, UM, I guess
you know, you could say, if Zack Smith was an
employee and he was charged with this, should he have
notified his employer at that time? Um? You know how
(28:08):
a state could say, well, that's why we fired him.
You know, I don't know but Shelley was an employee
out of the athletic department, but at the university. Yeah,
I guess that that's probably the guess is that everybody
falls on their sword and they say that Zack didn't
report and that's why they didn't know the problem is
you have you have that you have a what's called
a digital digital paper trail which appears to appears to
(28:30):
state otherwise. Uh, fascinating stuff. I know this is not
the way in which you want to be known in
college athletics, but considering your circumstance being in between gigs,
you've done an incredible job and and as you stated,
like all of this is documented. The best way to
do so is to go to your Facebook page. Correct, Yeah,
that's check my Twitter account. I'll have links to the
(28:54):
to the reports there. And of course there's also an
interview with Stadium Sports which you can find. It's a
twenty four hour streaming streaming service in which Zack Smith's
ex wife Courtney sat down with Stadium Sports and you
can hear her own words. Brett, thanks so much for
joining us. Look forward to seen you. I love you,
cover you in college football and appreciate you being our
guest in Fox Sports Radio any time to Thanks Buddy.
(29:17):
It's Brett McMurphy joining us on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
That's bad, bad, It's all kinds of not good at
Ohio Stay. You're supposed to be getting ready for a
college football season and this we've all had a bad
day in the golf course. Sadly, it's not always easy
to fix your golf game, but it's easy to find
a fix for your check engine line at Auto Zone.
The free Auto Zone Fixed Finder tool will find the
(29:38):
likely issue, saving you money down the road getting the

what else is going on the world of sports. Dan. Yeah.
This was more from Courtney Smith which she spoke with
Stadium Sports. She said truly on it. She was going
to talk have to Tar Irman. She's gotta have to
Tarervan nice with that. Fine you should Tower Van. We
can't have somebody like this coaching young men. That was
(29:59):
from court Knee Smith, the ex wife of Zack Smith.
Is Doug and Brett went through that great interview Ohio
State or Urban Meyer. If you have to comment on
this report, let's get you caught up today. On some
other happenings in the world of sports. Packers, I'm backer
Jake Ryan's gonna miss the entire eighteen season after tearing
his a c L in practice on Monday. Redskins had
a scare today. Wide receiver Josh Dockson suffered a shoulder
(30:20):
injury and workouts, but Dockson did tweet later on that
he was quote well good end quote. Buccaneers gave GM
Jason Lighty one year extension through twenty nineteen. Patriots released
wide receiver Jordan Matthews he was yesterday. New England brought
in Eric Decker for a workout in New England. Nationals
beat the Mets today by account of five to three,

the season four the Nationals in that five three win

Is getting taken yard. Um, we're gonna give a find
a position player who can pitch. Can we get his
(31:02):
position player who can actually pitch? Up? Here's what I
just did. I reached out to Clay Travis. Clay has
been all over this story as well, huge college football
fan as am I. And of course he's also a lawyer.
Um no longer a practicing one. He just he just
pretends and uses law background. He's gonna join us. We'll
talk through this this Urban Meyer thing. And if you
(31:23):
asked yourself like, look, we got baseball, we got Ken Rosenthal.
Next hour, John Middlecoff from three and Out podcast, which
you should download part of the Herd podcast network. Also
coming up, we'll talk to NFL football. Urban Meyer is
in the conversation and might be the best college football
coach ever ever. And he runs the risk because because
(31:51):
it appears that he covered up Earl Bruce's grandson's abuse
of his wife of getting fired. We're gonna discuss it
next in the Dug Outlip Show. This is the Doug
Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox
Sports Radio. Mm hmmm, m all right, let's welcome to
(32:15):
Clay Travis. The show is called out Kicked the coverage.
It's six to nine am Eastern time, three to six
Pacific time. And of course you can check out his website.
I'm sure there's an um as well mail bag that's
coming out UH this weekend that will make you laugh,
that will make you chuckle. But he, like me, love
cover and UH and adore college football and everything that
(32:38):
goes with it. And unfortunately with college football there's a
supreme amount of money and power and influence that goes
with being a head coach, and Clay Travis joins us.
Clay I would state, UM that I can't think of
a coach outside of Nick Saban who is has has
been as profoundly impactful at as many programs as Urban Meyer,
(33:02):
like er Meer is. In the discussion of the greatest
coaches of the in the history of college football, fair, yes,
I mean even in this current era of college football,
I believe Urban Meyer, Devo Sweeney, and Jimbo Fisher other
than Nick Saban are the only coaches who have won
national championships that are current coaching. So it's it's a
(33:22):
tiny little fraternity of coaches to begin with. And obviously
Nick Saban is I think the most dominant coach in
college football history, but Urban Meyers the second most accomplished
coach in college football history. Two titles at Florida, one
at Ohio State, Uh, he, like Nick Saban, is the
only coach who has gotten multiple titles to his resume
right now, and he's still relatively a young guy. I mean,
(33:45):
I'm not sure exactly how old Urban Meyer is. I
haven't looked up his his bio today, but I believe
he's still fifty three or fifty four. So unlike Saban,
who is you would probably think on the homework stretch
of his career, I mean, I would think Urban Meyers
still has no or tent or fifteen years to coach
at a very high level. Um, okay, So what's your
(34:05):
read on Brett McMurphy's story. Brett, by the way, just
joined us uh before you did here on on the
Doug Gottlieb Show. What's your read on the latest, which
is Erban Meyer appears to have been lying in the
idea that he didn't know anything about the two thousand
and fifteen incident unless he never talks to anybody else
on his staff, unless the wives who seem to have
(34:27):
known all about Zack smith problems, uh, don't communicate at
all with with Shelley, and Shelley is a vault and
nothing gets passed to on Urban Meyer. What's your reaction.
I think urban Meyer is gonna get fired over this.
Uh now, Um that that's my belief. Now Ohio State
has not issued a statement right now. Urban Meyer has
(34:47):
not issued a statement right now. I believe this story
now has been out on approaching six hours. Uh that's
a long time to allow this story to be out
there without issuing a denial of any sort. Uh. You know,
this is a story that came out in the middle
of the day, I think get like ten am Eastern time,
so everybody would have been at their desks, everybody would
have been working. This is also not a story that
(35:08):
just landed as a bombshell, because they had to address
it last week when urban Meyer said he didn't know
anything about it. Um. And so I think this is
a much of the best for Ohio State. And uh
at least one offshore vetting the house has has put
out of which and I just tleeted this a few
minutes ago, uh that that they expect urban Meyer to
(35:31):
be fired before week one of the season. Um. So
this is a uh certainly messy stories from the Ohio
State Or is there any way others can fall on
the sword? You know, all the King's horses and all
the you know is that is there is there any
way possible to to every everyone else falls in the
swords to Urban survives. Yeah, So if I were representing
(35:54):
Urban Meyer right now and I was trying to sketch
out the best possible scenario for him, he would need
to deny that he had any knowledge at all, and
he would need for his wife to basically say yes,
you know, well one, I mean, you could say, okay,
it's entire like all the text messages that were cited
and breming Murphy's story, all of the evidence that he
has built his story around so far that that could
(36:17):
always be fabricated, right, Like, I mean, there's always the
possibility that somebody is hying and that they have gone
through an incredible array. He can make up fake text
messages and everything else, right, Like, you can always start there.
There's always the possibility that someone is trying to perpetulate
a complete wise so leaving aside that you would assume
that they've done their due diligence um and that they
(36:40):
feel very comfortable that she's being honest in these text
messages are real. Uh, the you know photos of the
victim are are real, and not doctor, and all these
different things that she's a llegend that he has done.
Leaving aside that, um, I think is if you're trying
to save open Meyer's jobs, you wong him a from
(37:01):
the direct knowledge of these allegations. He says, don't know.
My wife knew, but I didn't know. And every other
wife on the coaching staff knew, but none of them
told me either. And some of my assistant coaches may
have known, but none of them told me either. And
so I had no knowledge whatsoever of this until uh
(37:21):
the news got broken when it did, and uh, And
that I think is the only way he could say
to himself. Now, the challenge there is urban Meyer has
always said he and his wife, Shelley, talked about everything,
that he trusts her opinion on all sorts of issues,
or people really going to believe that none of these
people told Obenmeyer. But that's to me, is the only
way that he can survive in this case. Is it
(37:44):
Is it possible that his response at the press conference
was what he was told how he was told to
respond by university lawyers. Potentially, But I mean, I said
then and there, I think that this is also makes
him look worse because if he would come out when
he remember he had a couple of days to get
his story straight before he was going to have to
answer to anybody, And if I were him what I
(38:07):
said at the time, I said, look if he came
out and said I walked into this, but no charges
were filed, And I asked Zac about his situation with
his family, and he told me that he hadn't done
any of these things, and when authorities didn't press charges,
I chose to believe him. You can say that maybe
I should have done more, but in two thousand and fifteen,
(38:29):
that's what I did, and they hadn't heard any other
details that made me question that decision until now, when this,
uh this police report potentially comes out and has a
lot more details associated with it. I think then people
probably would have been inclined to give him the benefited
it down if he because it would have sounded honest, right,
because you don't know necessarily how you're supposed to respond,
(38:50):
do you believe a guy or not? No charges to file.
I think that then gets into a kind of messy situation,
and then uh, oban Meyer has got I'm kind of
plausible deniability when these details come out, but saying you
had no knowledge of it. I think is is a
tough flug road to home given all of these specifics
(39:11):
now that are out there in text messages, and the
fact that his wife is in a text message saying
I have to go tell you know, like yeah, no, no,
I got I got it, I got the the The
the most interesting part that we got from bet McMurphy,
and a lot of it was really interesting, is I said,
why don't get rid of his X? Mean the first
time he said he's Earl Bruce's grandson, and he continued
(39:32):
to state that Earl Bruce is the second most influential
man in his life, right, Like, so Earl Bruce's grandson
ends up potentially bringing him down. But look, you end
up bringing yourself down when you're you're not willing to
cut bait with a guy because you're just not He's
just not worth it, right, just he's just not worth it. Yeah.
And I think also the fact that it's um if
he had come out and said, you know what, like
(39:54):
the timing on this is just uh, it was different
than in you can argue I should have been more
and more on top of it. Yeah, But a tough
argument to make. Yeah, great stuff, Cleck Clay Travis out
kicked the coverage. Check out. I'm sure he's got a
Facebook show fall on Twitter. Thanks Clay, appreciate it. Thank
you all right. Kareem abdul Jabbar put himself in the
(40:15):
goat debate or was he already there? We discussed next.
The ex wife of former Ohio State assistant coach Zack
Smith claims that she has no idea how urban Meyer
could not have known that the assistant abused her. In
Courtney Smith speaking with Stadium Sports. To be clear, none
(40:37):
of the coach's wives knew about the physical abuse at
that time. They did not um In two thousand and fifteen,
I came forward with it. I told Shelly, I sent
her some pictures. I spoke to her on the phone.
Shelley would be Shelley Meyer, the wife of urban Meyer. Now,
urban Meyer denied knowledge of the incident. Last week, Courtney
(40:58):
Smith old reporter Brett mcmurph you that she told Shelley
Meyer about Zack's assault on her, as you heard in
Ohio State nor urban Meyer have you had to comment
on the report. And that's beat the Mets today five
three Packers. I'm backer Jake Ryan done for the year
with a torny c L I'm Dan Buyer. What up
(41:18):
to Gottlieb Show Fox Sports Radio? My boy BC just
gave me the ultimate compliment. He's like, dude, I had
a meeting at five who lives in southern California in
sales couldn't get out of my car because you had
Brett McMurphy and Clay Travisan back to back and look, man,
(41:40):
this is this is big news. And um, I will
commend Tolin Cowherd. We he talked about it on his show.
There are other places you go and you listen to
sports radio and they have predetermined what they're gonna talk
about and news breaks and they're like, we'll get to it.
It's not how we roll here at Fox Sports Radio.
We want to cover what everybody is talking about when
(42:00):
they're talking about it, and this is a big story.
Urban Meyers has done an incredible job as a football
coach wherever he has been. Wherever he's been um from
Bowling Green to Utah to Florida with tool national champion,
back to back national champ or two national champions not
back back to national championships, and then of course took
(42:21):
some time off um for what health and family concerns,
and then returns to Ohio State and leads them immediately
to prominence immediately. So this is in no way an
attack on him as a football coach. And frankly, I
know he took a lot of chances at Florida. They
took all, They took a ton the Aaron Hernandez thing, Like,
(42:42):
you know, I'm not gonna hold him personally responsible. There
are other coaches that have had players run a muck
to which they had no idea. And I'd like to
think that he likes so many college coaches wanted to
save some of these kids, give them the best. But
there's also a certain amount of selfishness. Hey, we can
just win with him and get him out and maybe
get him a degree, get him to the NFL before
something bad happens. We'll put him in a better spot
(43:05):
and and and they'll be better people. But America has
has grown not only a conscience but some inner fortitude
in regards to the treatment of women. Just to way,
I was just talking about this last night with with
a friend. I was walking down the street and I'm
(43:25):
in New York, working on first things first. And I
was saying, like, it's it's really amazing how long so
much of this stuff went on? How long? And I
do think I don't know how you guys are. And
if there's ladies out there, I just as far as
hitting a woman, even grabbing a woman, I just I
(43:48):
think that's either something you have in you or you don't.
I could be I could be wrong. I don't know.
I've never nobody. I'm very very lucky my my late
father didn't abuse alcohol or drug or my mom. Don't
get me wrong. They would argue, and there were some
bad arguments, and like, look, when you're married, as long
as they're married, you know, as long as they were married,
(44:13):
these things are gonna happen. My wife and I we've
had one. We had one really really bad argument. This
is like three years ago. I remember we got an argument.
It was really over we had just a daughter who
was one of my daughter's suffers from anxiety, severe anxiety,
and it was it creates a ton of tension and
stress in your household. And we got into a really
(44:34):
bad argument. But now, never in my mind would I
ever think of laying a hand on my wife as
frustrated as I was with her and Mike. You know
your kids, you started you're not there. I used to
be yelling at each other and they start crying. Listen,
we're fine, We're just we've been for a long time
and this is a hard time. Sorry, bid me to
(44:55):
freak you guys out. But I just I don't know.
I don't have that in me, thankfully, you know. I
don't know if genetic or you know, maybe it's it's
made worse if there's drugs, are alcohol involved. I don't know.
But the Zack Smith fella seems seems lovely in that
his now ex wife said that if he said is
this here say but he said if then Brett mcgriffiye
(45:17):
told us if the environment of hose Stay is gonna
bring everybody down, and he sounds just charming, absolutely charming. Alright,
more on that to come. If you miss those interviews,
we'll put them up on Twitter. You can listen to
him stuck out the show Fox Sports Radio. I want
to get to this story. I want to get to
this story from Kareem Abdul Jabbar. These goat conversations, these
(45:40):
goat discussions are fun distractions. While sitting around waiting for
pizza to be served. Kareem told this to the Undefeated,
but they're on par with the Which superpower would you
most want? Flight or invisibility? I'm gonna go flight. I'm
gonna go to flight. Whether I'm included or not in
(46:02):
anyone's list doesn't matter. I played my hardest and help
my teammates. That's the most important thing I walked away with.
The reason there's no such thing as the goat is
because every player plays under unique circumstances. We played different
positions and are different rules, with different teammates and different coaches.
Every players had to adapt to their circumstances and find
a way to excel. This is it, Highlander. There can
(46:23):
be more than one. First of all, great use of
a mid eighties movie reference, Highlander excellent. Second of all,
flight more than invisibility, because if you can fly, you
can disappear. I may go back and retract on that one,
but I'm i disappear. And third, I kind of think
what he's doing is the old inception thing you gets
(46:47):
familiar with the movie inception. Christopher Nolan a brilliant filmmaker.
Christopher Nolan single handedly saved the Batman franchise. But Christopher
Nolan's best work is probably inception. And the idea of
inception is planting an idea inside someone without them knowing
(47:07):
it's an idea. It's a it's a great technique to
use in business. Will you make somebody feel like you
talk about something and you make somebody feel like they
come up with the idea, that's a great idea. You know,
women do this stuff all the time. Women are so
much smarter than men, so much smarter. You know, you
(47:28):
go shopping and they just happened to walk by a
set of ear rings. Huh hm, and you know those
are that expensive. I don't even want to try those on.
It's just it's too much money. And then they walk
on and what day they they've planted the idea, and
you're next time you're panicked, next time you're you said
something stupid about your mother in law. Next time you
(47:49):
need a gift and you're like, man, what do I do?
I haven't gotten anything nice like ear rings. They did
it the inception. They just planted that idea. And the
fact that they said, please don't give me this, it's
too much money, is a a big boy am I
worth it till you. That's what they did. I'm always
blown away by how much smarter my wife is than me.
I'm like, damn, you do that. Kareem just did that
(48:12):
death Look. Should Kareem Abdul Jabbar be in the goat discussion?
He should be. He won six m vps, he won
six NBA titles. He's great. He's all time lead score
in NBA history. Now, I wouldn't consider him the greatest
of all time because the reason Jordan's Magic Bird and
uh lebron Or in that discussion is one it's more
(48:36):
modern day basketball. To their guys that handled the ball
more made everybody better at both ends of the floor,
especially in the offensive end of the floor. Like Cream
was a lot of things and he could pass, but
Cream was he had an unstoppable weapon. As a score,
he's a great score. And earlier in his career he
was more athletic as a defender, he could do more things.
But he's a great score. And part of it is
(48:57):
we watch basketball is so different now we can we
couldn't conceptualize a great center leading a team. It's much
like we can't figure out the old idea of O J.
Simpson and Walter Payton and these great running backs, like
we just can't figure out how a running back could
be the best player, the most important player on a
on a team because football is played in, officiated, and
(49:19):
coached so differently now, so I wouldn't I don't. Look.
I've been doing this a long time, and I've I've
done radio shows where I said, we should have the
discussion of Kareem abdul Jabbar. He was my coach in
Oklahoma City in the usb L and I actually did
an entire radio show on why don't we ever talk
about Kareem? We talked about Bill Russell because of the
(49:40):
number of titles, but we we kind of gloss over
Kareem abdul Jabar. We do now, Jordan's the greatest of
all time. Burden Magic to me are still above that
of Lebron James. But some people think Lebron's above them,
and some people have Lebron is the greatest player of
all time. There was a time to which Kobe was
sort of creeping into a discussion about Jordan's. I never
(50:00):
saw it, but he did win five titles. Then you
have Tim Duncan's won a bunch of titles, and there
Shaquille and Neil, but nobody considers Shack the greatest of
all time. But Shaq did win a title before Kobe did.
There's a lot of the other guys that are incredible players,
incredible players. But I think what Kareem did was he
(50:25):
did the inception thing. You know, whether I'm included or
not in anyone's list doesn't matter. Hey, don't worry about me.
This is not about me. This is about the general discussion.
That's what he did. And what he did was he
just he walked by those earrings and he planted that
seed inside our heads. And now everybody's talking about Kareem
(50:49):
abdul Jabar, and people go back and like, damn, Cream
won six titles, He won six vs. Magic never won
a title without Kareem on his team. Huh, that's amazing.
I didn't know that. Why isn't Kareem abdul Jabbar in
this discussion? What's put Kareem in's That's what we did today.
At first things first, it's brilliant, absolutely brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
(51:19):
So I'm blown away by the intelligence of both women
and Cream Abdul Jabar because they did something that Christopher
Nolan captured in inception plant an idea and then walk
away and you never know they planted the idea, like, man,
I don't even know how to you even start thinking
about cream, du but I never had cream, had never
been in that discussion. And before you sit there and
(51:40):
go like, oh, yes, your house, he's your all time
lose scorer six. No one's ever done a mount rushmore
and go like, let's put kareem up there. No, no,
they haven't, No, they haven't. Doug Otlip Show, Fox Sports

Ken Rosenthal joins us up coming next, who won and
who lost at the trade deadline? Why did the Nationals
hold on to Bryce Harper? Was it because they knew

(52:44):
of feels like the Yankees are onto something. And how
bad is this Chris sale shoulder injury? Ken Rosenthal, Fox

Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. Uh, the trade deadline
has come and gone, and Bryce Harper is still a
member of the Washington Nationals. What gives plus Chris Archer
a deal that went through yesterday? He goes to Pittsburgh.
Interestingly enough, our next guest said that the going rate
(53:30):
for Chris Archer uh was essentially predicted it two years ago.
Ken Rosenthal MLB on Fox Insider joins us here on
the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Um, all right,
let's let's start with with Bryce Harper, what's the real reason,
Like the Nationals went from we're not going to trade him,
(53:50):
we're not going to trade him, we'll listen to trade
offers to we're not going to trade him, we're gonna
go for it. What what really went on in d
C yesterday? Well, it's hard to say for sure, Doug,
but it's sure seems like the Nationals put him out
there and thinking, all right, if somebody wants to go
crazy and give us something ridiculous, we'll take it. And
(54:10):
then they backed off that and that it happened. That's
the only possible explanation for really how this went down.
So is there any renewed hopes that he'll resign with
the Nationals. I'm sure they have hope of that. Um,
if it's the right thing in their mind for them,
I don't know if they're gonna take that after the
end of the season. They've got a number of good
(54:32):
young outfielders or Harper has not had the best season
and he might think, and his agency, Scott Forest might think,
we still want our ex number of dollars in the
Nationals might say that's not coming here. So certainly, if
you trade him it reduces the chances. Generally speaking, very
few players resigned with their teams after getting traded. It's
(54:54):
something that is almost akin to breaking ties with the player.
But in this case, I don't know that matters. He's
gonna take the most money wherever that is, whether he
was trades or not. Yeah, I'm just wondering where that
money lies, right Like, it doesn't feel like Boston needs him. Um,
I know there's he softened his stance on New York
(55:15):
whereas he was very much anti New York a couple
of years ago, because I mean, who wouldn't love to
take some of that New York money. But but but
they're pretty good in the outfield as well, and they
need pitching more than they need to put, you know,
thirty million plus into into one hitter. Um Cubs. Maybe
I don't know if the Angels can absorb that salary.
(55:36):
I don't think the Dodgers, like, what are the legit
And I know there's other stuff to get to, but
what are the legit other options outside of the Nationals,
especially considering what what they believe the going rate is
going to be in years and in length for a
guy like Bryce Harper, well, First of all, we gotta
see how he finishes the season. If the deason kind
(55:57):
of like he's played all year, he's not gonna have
the same price tech at least he won't have the
same value in the eyes of clubs. He might in
his own mind wants the same money, whether it's three million,
drevillion whatever. Now, let's say he gets hot, and let's
say he looks like the price of old not getting
the playoffs, he has a good run. If all of
(56:17):
that happens, different equation, And I know you can look
at it right now and say, oh, this team doesn't
need him, that team doesn't need him. But when you
have superstar player available, teams make room. They find ways
to accommodate that player, to get him into their roster,
into their pay structure. So I wouldn't look at it
in that assessment at all. What I would do is
(56:40):
typically wait, because we don't know one what teams are
going to see in him until we really know at
the end of the season where he has gone with
the season. If he hasn't come back and to have
any normal Bryce Harper kind of year, I don't know
that he has the same value that he thinks he has.
It's it's a great point. By the way, I know,
(57:04):
I don't know where you are, but you're walking right now,
so you couldn't be watching this game. The Orioles who
have trade away everything except for Adam Jones and then
Chris Davis that they can't get rid of. Right, they're
actually upseption one on the Yankees. Just right, that's an
old that's big. Yeah, that's baseball, right that that that's baseball. Uh,
the team with the most talent on a given day
doesn't always win. But I would rather have the Yankees
(57:26):
roster than the Orioles, No, no, no question about it.
How much did the Yankees improve themselves, not just with
their additions but also kind of running blocker and going
and getting the best the best relief picture on the market. Well,
they had an unusual deadline because they were kind of
satisfying the present in the future and people see the
(57:48):
names Zack Britton and Lance Lynn and Jay Half and say, Okay,
that's who they got, which is true, that is who
they got for two and eighteen and Lynn and Half
and there all potential creations. So they're unlikely or not
certain to be back. But what the Yankees also did,
in addition to bolstering themselves that way, was acquire a
(58:09):
ton of international money, which gives them the right to
spend more international market this year, and that helps them
for the future as well. So it was kind of
a shrewd double play that they employed here, and I
like what they did. It wasn't a great starter out there,
even Chris Archer is not a great starter. So they
(58:30):
took stock of what they had and tried to do
the best they could under the circumstances, and I thought
they did very well. How did It's interesting that the
Rays got what they wanted for Chris Archer two years
If you've proposed it two years ago, Chris Archer was
a different picture. It seems like they got a king's
ransom for a guy who's got a lot of tread
(58:52):
worn off those tires and is not the elite picture
that some thought before. Well, it's interesting about this whole thing, Doug,
And you mentioned my so called tradictions and two years ago,
two years ago, it would have taken roughly the same
players to get him, And that's what I had said
in a video for Fox, that that was the price
at that time. What is different now is that the
(59:14):
prices or the values of all three players are lower
than they worked two years ago. That's why it's still worked.
Otherwise there's no way it would have still worked. It's
just weird that each guy has kind of in his
own way suffered a diminishment of value, and that is
why the price was still the same. That was a
flucus thing. And anyone who ohel you're there with us.
(59:42):
It seemed to lost Ken. We'll get Ken back because
I want to ask him about about two other teams.
As a buddy of mine just texted me, that's not baseball,
that's Sonny Gray. Sonny Gray got lit up by the
very much depleted Baltimore Orioles is Sonny Gray, who of
course was the big trade deadline acquisition last year for
the Yankees. And uh yeah, he got basically put out
the pasture in the playoffs last year because he he
(01:00:04):
wouldn't he wasn't good enough. Ken Rosenthal joining us in
the Doug Gotlip Show. Want to ask you about the Angels. Um.
It's funny the Commissioner Baseball says, you know, says some
things I disagreed with in regards to his desire to
get to make Mike Trout more sellable, more marketable, and
instantly everybody's covering it actually worked, everybody's covering Mike Trout
(01:00:25):
more like, oh yeah, Mike Trout's amazing. And the Angels
have decided, hey, look, we ain't winning this year. Maldonado
gone defensive catcher. They were gonna lose anyway, get get
a pitching prospect. And then they trade Ian Kinsler yesterday,
so they're they're packing it in for for next year. Um,
next year is a huge year for the Angels. Are
they going to have the weaponry? I mean, obviously they
(01:00:48):
had so many guys hurt in terms of pictures. We
don't know what they do with Otani, Like, they gotta
do something in order to make sure Mike Trout stays
in Anaheim for the future, don't they. Well, they thought
they had this year didn't work out. They had signed Kembler,
signed back Cozart, gotten no Toni. From the start of
the season when they were so hot, it looked like
(01:01:09):
they were going to be a really formidable club, and
then they had a ton of injuries, A ton of
problems occurred because of that, they were depleted and it
just didn't work out, So I have no problem with
them making the trades they did. They had to. It's
it's not realistic for them to think they're making the
playoffs during the three better teams in their division. But
you're right, two years to control with Trout after this season,
(01:01:33):
and there's certainly no insurances they're going under a circumstances.
So if they want to win with him, it probably
have to spend a lot of money to sell seasons,
and historically they have done that at times. I don't
know if they're willing to do that again, or maybe
they try to extend him. It's gonna be interesting to
see that's how they go about it. Yeah, it's good,
(01:01:54):
it's good. It's gonna be fascinating, all right. Last thing
last year, uh, the Justin Berlanard deal came down to
the to the final hour of the of the waiver
wire trade deadline. Who are the who are the names
that you think will be bandied about as we get
closer to that hard deadline for moves. Well, it's a
little bit different scenarire right now because in August players
(01:02:17):
have a clear waivers, so it's more difficult to make trade.
Blander clears because he had a ton of money left
from the contract at all seas take that off. Whether
that happens with anybody now at that level of this August,
I don't see it. Frankly, I don't know if there's
going to be anybody that's significant, maybe in Andrew McCutcheon,
(01:02:39):
but Andrew McCutcheon is not what he wants was, He's
not the star he wants was. So I don't see
any Bolanders type deal happening. Those are really rare. If
you remember the big Red Sox deal with Adrian Gonzalez
going to l A and that the whole group that
was called exactly the years Doug, but it was many
years ago. That dealing Rolander was the two biggest August
(01:03:02):
deals of recent memory. Big deal, big names in August
or the exception not the Yeah. Well it's also remember
they had to take the Carl Crawford deal, which is
like a poison pill in that contract. That that's part
of it, right, Yeah, Josh Beckett was in that. But
that was a transformational type trade which you just don't
see very often. You did see it last year. Great
(01:03:23):
great stuff. I really appreciate you joining us We'll look
forward to talking his baseball continues to heat up. Thanks
so much and enjoy Red Sox Yankees. All right, thanks,
all right, that's Ken Rosenthal from MLB on Fox. That's amazing.
Two years ago he said it would cost the Pirates
Austin Meadows and Tyler Class. Now and guess what they got. Yeah,
(01:03:44):
the Rays got Austin Meadows entire, Tyler Glass. Now, let's
get to Dan buy or find out what else is
going on in the world of sports. What you got,
d Yeah, yeah who. Sports Report says that urban Meyer
is meeting with athletic director Gene Smith this afternoon. Don't
know the contents of that meeting, but I'm sure the
topic that has been talked about all day will be
brought up if you're just joining us. The ex wife
(01:04:06):
of former Ohio state assistant coach Zack Smith is claiming
that she has no idea how urban Meyer could not
have known that the assistant coach abused her in Courtney
Smith told reporter Brett McMurphy, you joined Doug earlier today
here on the Doug gott Leap Show, that she told
the wife of urban Meyer, Shelley Meyer, about Zack Smiths
assault on her in Police were called to the home
(01:04:26):
at that time. Courtney Smith then filed four divorce two
weeks later. Urban Meyer denied knowledge of that incident. Last week,
another text exchange with the wife of another assistant coach
claims that Urban met with Zack Smith about the allegations,
but that then assistant denied them. Ohio State nor Urban
Meyers yet to comment on the report in Major League Baseball.
(01:04:48):
Hold on, and I know you have I'm gonna let
you do your job, and I apologize for cutting in again.
This is the problem with the with the shutting down
and the the steadfast denial last week by Remyer, Like
why why not just I don't want to comment at
this time, and then you could have you know, you
could have gone back and said I did meet with
(01:05:08):
was Zack Smith? He told me it wasn't true. It
was He told me it was something personal between him
and his wife and it ultimately got resolved in a divorce,
and both sides of the better because of it. Like that,
that's I don't understand why he would he'd shut it
down the way he did last week, especially considering and
maybe this is the answer. Doug knowing the risks of
(01:05:30):
bringing him back. Um, considering that two thousand nine situation,
that's gotta be the it's gotta be the only that's
got to be the thing. Is what what I said about.
That's my comparison to Paterno, which has you become pot committed.
Once you stand by a guy and you realize, damn,
he's a bad guy. And I and I didn't. You
can try and get rid of him. But remember, like Erbier,
(01:05:53):
was that a coaching for two years and yeah, he
hired He could have he could have swallowed hard gent
and said the Earl Bruce's grandsonde, Hey dude, I'm sorry,
you're unhirable because of the domestic violence thing. I can't
do it, can't do it. But he did, and he
had to have a zero talents policy. Need to note it. MADS.
League Baseball today, Marwin Gonzales is just in a solo
(01:06:13):
home run for the Astros. They're on top of the
Mariners one nothing. In the second Indian strop the Twins
today to nothing. Carlos Carrasco went seven and a third
and struck out Tana National's down the Mets of five
to three. Tigers were seven four winners against the Reds,
while the Orioles lead the Yankees right now in the
ninth innning seven to two in the Bronx and some
NFL notes to pass along. ESPN is reporting Seahawks wide
(01:06:34):
receiver Doug Baldwin could miss the entire preseason because of
his knee issues. Had coach Pete Carroll said yesterday that
Baldwin will be would be held out a couple of weeks. Packers,
I'm backer Jake Ryan will miss the entire twenty eighteen
season after tearing his A c L in practice on Monday. Doug,
back to you, these practice injuries are are absolutely positively crazy. Uh, Dan,
(01:06:56):
let me ask you, what what do you think happens
at oh State? UM? I don't know the outcome, but
I just will say this. I think that considering and
you brought up the Jim Trustle situation earlier, if Um
and there are different circumstances, if they were set the
fire trestle when he was at that point of his career,
UM willing to do that, I don't think that that
(01:07:17):
bodes well for Urban Meyer now m hm. He deja
vu for a lot of Ohio State fans. For of
what is up in the air and what is happening
and trying to figure out, you know, he said or
she said. I was just on in Ohio State UH
fan site and they had a poll up and they
asked that same question, will Urban Meyer be pack And
it was fifty fifty And and as Clay Travis told
(01:07:40):
you on the show earlier, there's odds makers who are
saying it's not fifty fifty, you know, for the for
the for the odds of him coming back, it's a
lot more weight in the favor that he wouldn't be
the head coach of the buck Eyes. And look I
and it's really it's really dicey to use a to
use an internet poll as a okay, but if you're
(01:08:01):
at a was it like buck nuts dot com? Is
that wars? Okay? Eleven Warriors, which is you know, one
of the big fanses you're on an Ohio like look,
Ohio State. Everyone is all these fans base bases are
the same. And this kind of goes to the Brewers
when they cheered for what's the kid's name who had
the tweets c Yeah, Josh Hayter. It's one of those
(01:08:22):
this is what we do. We can criticize our own
but damn it, you can't criticize us. And so on
a on a on on an Ohio state website. To
have it be fifty fifty, that's like the real world
being is gonna get fired. That is that crazy for
me saying, I think that's you said if you went
out on that thing and he said urban Meyer walked
(01:08:44):
on water, you know before today or before this this
Zack Smith deal, people just said, like, I believe it
on that site. I was like, yeah, I believe that.
I absolutely believe that. So I think I think it's bad.
I think it's really bad. I know people who are
huge Urban Meyer fans like, man, I don't know, and
(01:09:06):
when you say you don't know, you kind of do. No.
Jeane Smith is a hell of a guy, an amazing guy.
This is a remarkable athletic department, but one that understands
people have to go it just you just do you
open up, you opening yourself up to lossuits. The only
thing I can think of is is is he was
(01:09:28):
instructed by a lawyer to set But that would be
that would be silly, That would be silly, I thought.
Brett McMurphy given us the exact timeline of events and
how it went down. Gave you a real sense for
how quickly they reacted from his to his previous story.
Now he's as Dan reported, meeting with Urban Meyer's meeting
(01:09:49):
with Jean Smith, the athletic director Ohio State. This stuff
happens really, really fast. All right, Let's play a game
bag his game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show, The
Brett McMurphy. Stuff is real news. Let's find out if
(01:10:09):
we're playing what real news? Fake news? That is the case, Doug,
fake news? All right, Doug, real news or fake news.
The Washington Nationals designated reliever Shawn Kelly for assignment after
he threw his glove on the ground giving up a
home run and the ninth inning of last night's blow
win against the Mets. Is that real news are fake news?
They're real and they're spectacular. Kelly was angry for being
(01:10:30):
put in the game, which had the Gnats up to one.
Maybe felt that Bryce Harper should have pitched since they
were up by twenty four. Anyway, skipper did. Martinez says
it was a selfish act by Kelly, who slammed his
glove on the ground when he gave up the home
run in the ninth dinning. Martinez said that he felt
that Kelly was showing up the manager, so they designated
him for assignment. Today. M a win, but but I
(01:10:59):
I like it. I do like it from the Nationals,
a team that has run a muck uh with with issues.
I don't know if this does this make everybody get
in line, like I I know, there's a when you're
up twenty five to three at the time, there's a
you know you should go through guys that just need
to get some meanings or find a way just grinding through.
(01:11:20):
But you gave up the home run. Get in their throat,
you know, get in there, get three outs and get
get everybody on their way home. Real news are fake news.
Doug Orioles offielder Adam Jones told reporters he vetoed a
trade to the Phillies because he wasn't it wasn't a
sure thing that the Phillies were going to make it
to the postseason. That's real news. No actually joined the
Jones pointed to the c B A and has no
(01:11:42):
trade clause as the reason, and without getting specific, said
this quote, I earned this and it's my decision. I
don't have to explain it to nobody. It's my decision.
Thank you and quote. And while he vetoed that trade,
I didn't want to go to Philadelphia. Wants to stay
in Baltimore. Um, that's fascinating to me that he just
I mean, like, look, he joined us, and I thought
he was great. You missed that interview. Go to uh
(01:12:04):
our facebook page, go to Fox Sports Trader dot com.
We'll tweet that one out. It's from like a week
and a half ago. And I thought he was as
open and honest as any athlete we've ever had on
the Doug Gott League Show. But that is interesting that
he could have been traded to the Phillies and he's like, now,
I don't want it, not feeling it. Real news are
fake news? From the NFL, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin
wants two things from Levan Bell when he returns to
(01:12:26):
the team. A chip on his shoulder and on efforts.
Is that real news or fake news? Real you are
fake news? Maybe he does, but Tomlin actually told CBS
Sports he wants Bell to report earlier than he did
last year, showing up Week one or just prior to
week one, and he also wants Bell to be in
better shape, as it took Levian a while to get
(01:12:47):
into football shape, so he wants better conditioning and an
earlier report date if Bell is going to report to
the team. Yeah, it's funny all these uh, all these
foreign players, like, you don't need to get in there.
You need to be in football shape, football shape and
ball shape. You can only get into playing wait for it, football,
So I agree with him. I just don't know if
(01:13:08):
L Bell is going to do that. Finally, real lows
are fake news. Doug Houston Rockets may be interested in
acquiring counse guard JR. Smith. I'm gonna go real news.
They're real and they're spectacular. That's according to ESPN Zack Low,
who says the Rockets have kicked the tires on Smith
as they look to add another wing player to their roster,
(01:13:29):
and one of the names popping up was maybe trading
for the calf swingman. M hm m hmm. It would
be interesting, yep, that would be interesting. Would would be
would be interesting in that they'd have to go, Okay,
look at the score, Jr. Look everybody, not look at
the look at the score. Jr. Yes, no time, no score,
(01:13:54):
But look j R. Smith can catch and shoot. He's
played in championship games. I'm not a huge Jr. Smith
fan as a star darting guard, but if he can
come off the bench, give him some scoring pop play
with Chris Paul, play with James Harden. That's a good
role for him. It does make a lot of sense.
This is game time on the Dug Gottlieb Show Doug
(01:14:16):

the Celtics calling coward seems to think so. You'll hear
(01:14:37):
his reason why in my response. Next, this is the
Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio, Doug Gotlip Show,
Fox Sports Radio. M mmmmmmm mmmmmm eight seven seven nine
(01:15:01):
nine Foxes the phone number. John middle Calfell join us
next hour if you haven't checked out the three and
Out podcast, part of The Herd podcast network. Same to
with All Ball, All Basketball podcast um every day. At
this time, we'd like to play for you a portion
of a previous show on Fox Sports Radio or Fox
Sports One. Don't we call it? And now? What do
the Fox Say? Is brought to you by True Car.
(01:15:23):
Car shopping can be confusing terms like dealer price, list price,
invoice price. True car Shose shows you what other people
in the area pay for the car that you want,
so you can recognize a good price when you're ready
by a new or used car. Visit True Car you'll
enjoy more confident car buying experience. Earlier today, Colin Cowherd
on The Herd had this to say about Kyrie Irving
and whether or not he would leave Boston. Mark Stein,
(01:15:45):
credible reporter. I actually recently tried to hire him for
my podcast network, A very very good reporter. Buzz is real.
The Knicks are going after Kyrie Irving. They are gonna
go after him. This follows up other credible reports that
Kyrie Irving in eleven months can go anywhere and he
(01:16:07):
is interested in New York. James Dolan, owner worst in
the league, is why the Knicks have been bad. It's
not because people don't want to go to New York City.
Don't buy into this. Cities don't matter in the NBA.
Here's three things we know that are happening. Players have
never been richer in the NBA. Stars like to hang
out with stars, and we also have a trend in
(01:16:29):
the NBA where stars are joining each other. Okay, that's
you can't deny those. Tell me the four cities that
stars have joined forces in in the last seven eight years.
Miami Bosh Wade and Lebron, Boston Ray Allen kg joined,
Paul Pierce, Houston, Chris Paul and now Mellow Joel Harden,
(01:16:50):
and San Francisco Durant joins the Warriors. Miami, Boston, Houston,
San Francisco. No Indianapolis in there, no Portland in there,
no Milwaukee in there, No in Orlando in there. Ever,
notice how often you see Blake Griffin, Chris Paul, and
Mellow in the finals or not actually playing. They're in commercials.
You get more commercials, you make more money in major markets.
(01:17:15):
This is a real story. Keep your eye on it.
But don't for a second tell me markets don't matter. Well, um,
Kevin Love obviously they traded for him, but they were
in Cleveland. And Kyrie has been in commercials and he's
had movies out. He's in Boston, He's got a movie out.
And by the way, Uncle Drew's a really good one.
I don't do I think the New York market matters. Somebody,
(01:17:36):
at some point is going to bring the Knicks back
to prominence. Whoever it is, will be knighted, will be
a saint, it be incredible. New York is still at
its core a basketball town, even more so than baseball.
I know, the Yankees have twenty seven titles, and they
dominate the sports landscape. The Giants have titles, they dominate
(01:17:57):
the fall sports landscape. But it's a and and the
Rangers are important. It's a Knicks town. Basketball is still
the heartbeat of New York City. And so I do
understand a kid that grows up in Jersey the affinity
for being the guy to save the Knicks. But why
save the Knicks when you can make the Celtics and
the champions. I don't think Kyrie Rivering has decided in
(01:18:20):
any way what he's gonna do, And I think that's
why no one seems to know, because Kyrie doesn't know.
I think generally Carrie really likes Boston, and he'd be
smart to stay in Boston, not just because of Brad
Stevens or the supporting cast, but he's got Danny Ainge,
who has fleeced people in trades Lee Brooklyn for Lease, Cleveland, Leice,
(01:18:43):
Phoenix Hell last year, around the around the the NBA Draft,
he fleeces the Philadelphia seventies six years. Tell me somebody
hasn't gotten over on in trades. Danny Ainge is awesome.
So when you got a great, thoughtful GM, you got
an incredibly thoughtful, interesting, and now experienced head coach, and
Brad Stevens, and you have an amazing supporting cast. Oh yeah,
(01:19:04):
and you're in a big city and a franchise that
has won championships in the past. What more do you need?
I guess you need to see it all put together,
and you can only see that over eighty two games.
That's what the Fox said. All right, next hour, we're
gonna get to some NFL stuff. We're also gonna gonna
track back on this Urban Meyer story, to which I mean,
(01:19:28):
unless Ermeyer doesn't talk to anyone related to anyone in
his program, he lied to Breck mcburfy lied to the
world last week about what he knew in regards to
his now former assistant coach and the alleged abuse of
his wife. Is there some wiggle room? Is there some
plausible deniability in there? Is there a way out of
(01:19:48):
this for Urban Meyers so that he can just coach
his football team. We we got to get to that
next hour. Plus. Bryce Harper still a member of the
Washington Nationals. NAT's have won two the road. Is that
turnaround their nattitude? I did it. I said n attitude.
That's right. I am that guy that says an attitude.
(01:20:09):
But but coming up next, injuries really shaped the preseason.
And there's one injury which just took place. Um, actually,
there's a lot of injuries. I don't know if you
guys saw this, but George Matthews was cut by the Patriots.
George Matthews, of course, uh comes in. He know, bounced around.
He signed a small little contract with the chance like
(01:20:31):
a prove it contract. Is a guy who played in
a couple of teams and the thought was Vanderbilt kid
will fit in with the offense. Suffered a severe hamstring
injury and then he gets cut. Remember they don't have
Julie Needelman, who suspended for four games. They do have
Chris Hogan who had an up and down season. They
got Cordill Patterson, Cordirel Patterson, but he's more primarily returner.
(01:20:54):
They got Philip Philip Dorset who's been taking a lot
of reps. And they also have Kenny Britt Braxton various
and they're looking they're looking at Eric Decker to possibly
come in. Decker, who was I guess it's hired. It's
crazy how things things can fall apart. We'll see if
Eric Decker lands on the Patriots. But injuries do shape
(01:21:17):
a team, especially injuries in the preseason part of the season,
Hunter Henry for the Chargers towards a c l in
in O T A. S that's gonna change the Chargers offense.
But there was one injury to one player. He's a
borderline star. But I think it's gonna have a dramatic
(01:21:38):
effect on an m VP candidate. Think about that and
m VP candidate. He doesn't get hurt, but a huge
component to his team does get hurt, and it seems
to to me derail a season which had not yet begun.
Who is it. We'll get to that. We'll get to
(01:21:59):
the Urban fire story, We'll get to the Bryce Harper,
We'll take you around the National Football League. That's up
coming next on The Doug Gottlieb Show, only on Fox
Sports Radio. The ex wife a former Ohio State assistant
coach Zack Smith told college football reporter Brett McMurphy that
she has no idea how urban Meyer could not have
(01:22:21):
known that the assistant abused her in this because Courtney
Smith revealed text messages that she shared with urban Meyer's wife, Shelley,
soon after that alleged assault. Urban Meyer denied knowledge of
the incident last week, Ohio State, nor urban Meyer, if
you have to comment on the report. Courtney Smith also
spoke with Stadium Sports. She thought suld want it. She
(01:22:43):
was going to talk, have to talk Urban She's gotta
have to Tarvan, you should tower and this. We can't
have somebody like this coaching young men in the National
Football League. Packers, I'm backer Jake Ryan's done for the
year with the torn a. C l Orioles just beat
the Yankees seven, five gnats down the Mets, three Indians,
blank the Twins today to nothing. I'm Dan Buyer, What
(01:23:10):
are It's the Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Do
do do doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo. Do hell
hath no fury? Like a woman scorned that an old
proverb from William Congreve, English playwright and poet. Will discuss it.
(01:23:35):
Why it matters upcoming in the Doug Gottlieb Show. Why
it could could not? I don't know if it should.
Why could end the career at Ohio State of Meyer.
We'll get to that in a moment. I promised you
that I would give you an injury I think has
a will have a huge impact on the upcoming NFL season.
(01:23:59):
Doug Baldwin's gonna likely missed the entire preseason, the entire preseason,
and though they've tried to fix they tried to solidify
the offensive line of the Seattle Seahawks. With all the
turnover on the defensive side of the ball, two of
(01:24:21):
the Stars the Legion of Boom summarily retiring, Jimmy Graham
being gone and off to Green Bay, the Seahawks are,
without any question Russell Wilson's team. They start the season
at Denver, then they go to Chicago, Cowboys at home
at Arizona. Bears were bad last year, Cardinals were bad
(01:24:44):
last year. Broncos were bad last year. Cowboys were nonplayoff
team last year. Then they have the Rams, who last
time they met. Granted they beat him, uh they beat
him on the road last year, but at home they
gotta be like forty two to seven. They go to Glenn,
they go to Denver, they got the Chargers, then to
the Rams, the Packers. It gets really difficult if Doug
(01:25:06):
Baldwin is the one guy to which you feel like
you can count on in Seattle to catch the football.
But Doug Baldwin had kind of a break I felt
like he had a breakout year last season. And now
Doug Baldwin could miss the entire preseason. Pete Carroll didn't
(01:25:28):
provide any details, merely referring to knee soreness. He's twenty
nine years old, he has an ongoing streak of eight
consecutive starts. He's missed just two games in seven NFL seasons. Man, ah,
that is that's going to be an interesting one. All right,
(01:25:50):
Let's get to the story of the day. Hell hath
no fury like that of a scorned woman, right, I
think you've heard that well, Crently, that's the case at
Ohio State. As the ex wife, the ex wife of
Zack Smith, who, of course, as the now former the
(01:26:13):
former wide receivers coach of Ohio State, has some has
some major allegations against urban Meyer. Think about this for
a second. No one is accusing urban Meyer of of
battering a woman. No one is accusing urban Meyer of
(01:26:36):
doing anything wrong personally. But man, here's Courtney Smith in
terms of what urban Meyer knew when he known, what
he do about it. The allegations against Smith go back
to two thousand nine, and then there was another arrest
in two thousand fifteen. Here's Courtney Smith in her interview
with Stadium Sports. So to be clear, none of the
(01:26:57):
coach's wives knew about the physical abuse at that time.
They did not um In two thousand and fifteen, I
came forward with it. I told Shelley, I sent her
some pictures. I spoke to her on the phone. Shelly
was she said tun on it. She was going to talk,
have to talk Erman, She's gonna have to tell herban
I said that, fine, you should tell Hervan. We can't
(01:27:18):
have somebody like this coaching young men. Uh. This was
This was Brett McMurphy, who broke the story on Facebook.
Soon to be a reporter with Stadium Sports, used to
be with the ESPN. It's a very well regarded reporter.
He said this in regards to whether or not this
could bring down Ohio State and Urban Meyer. If Urban
(01:27:41):
Meyer at the press conference in Chicago, simply says, we
were told about this, the police investigated it, there were
no charges, so that's why we kept Jack on the staff.
Now that there's this new information about the protection order
came back and now we feel like we need to
make a move. That's fine. But he went out on
the to the cliff and said, I had no knowledge.
(01:28:01):
I didn't know about this. Why would somebody make this up?
Welcome only that maybe this demise by basically saying it
didn't happen, when obviously there's tons of evidence that indicates otherwise.
Brad colepl is the attorney for Zach Smith. He issued
this statement on his client's behalf quote. Zack Smith wants
(01:28:22):
to be transparent and honest as possible, but it's not
going to be done today through the media. It will
only be after he and ex wife are sworn in
to testify. Once he gets a chance to sell his
side of the story, don't be surprised when it is
corroborated by every police whoever responded to Mrs Smith's call.
(01:28:43):
It's a weird sentence for a lawyer, every police officer,
every member of police anyway, it's every police. Um. So
that's kind of fascinating as the um there's there's text
messages that she has reported, and now the attorney is
(01:29:05):
coming out and saying like, look, um, there's even a
story here that the Zack that that Kofel put out.
That's the again, the attorney for Zack Smith, that Kofel
put out via CBS Sports dot Com, and in it
it says, you know, all the stems from uh from
(01:29:25):
a protective order. Let me read this to you. This
is Brad Kleful again who says, you know, he's going
to get a chance to tell his side of the story.
But he also says that Zack Smith went to drop
off their thirteen year old son. They were he was
supposed to meet his ex wife at the clubhouse at
their apartment complex. She no showed, so he took his
(01:29:48):
son to her apartment dropped him off. That's when she
took a picture and called the police and said he
was trespassing. Yeah, that's that's why I asked a lot
of this stuff that domestic violence. Look, you can't ever
put your hands on a wife. A woman, girlfriend, a
woman on the street can do it. Um, But there
(01:30:12):
there are there is nuance to the story. And at
times when a when a man is abusive towards a woman,
a woman's action or reaction could be in that she
could antagonize the man. So I don't know what's what
I do know that we we desperately need to take
(01:30:34):
a breath, wait for everything to come out. The hard
part for urban Meyer is, regardless of what came out,
why would you steadfastly deny that you had any knowledge
of something which it appears you had to have knowledge of,
Even if you couldn't say, like, listen, and and please
(01:30:54):
don't think that I'm dismissing domestic violence claims. But even
if you couldn't say, look, uh, he didn't treat her
write and she's kind of crazy, and they had a
violent relationship that had to end, and two thousand fifteen
it came to a head and it was and I
told him like, look it's over. Okay, you get away
from her, she gets away from you. Otherwise this is
(01:31:16):
gonna get really bad. Whatever she's accusing you of, whatever
you did, whatever you didn't do, get away from each other.
Just it's not going to work. It'll be better off.
Everyone will be happier if you're if you're in separate places.
Even if it was that, the fact that irbant Meyer
said they know anything about it, and maybe maybe Ohio
(01:31:37):
State jumped the gun in firing Zack Smith after this
report came out, when the smarter thing would have been
calls Zack Smith in ask him what's what, and he
could have said like, look, I was in a dysfunctional
relationship and we had an issue going back to two
thousand nine when I was drunk, and then in two thousand,
two fifteen, she called the cops on me again like
(01:31:58):
there's this, there's that, and some evidence they but for
urban Meyer to be so steadfast and the thing about it,
we've moved on from that. I'm not answering questions. I
think the the job saver to him is if somebody
from an official, a lawyer from the university, told him
(01:32:20):
to respond in the way in which he responded, because
it doesn't it seems like he was lying. And if
you lie to your boss. Now he's meeting met with
Jane Smith today. If he lies to Jeane Smith and
gonna get fired. But this is fascinating to watch. The
cover up could become worse than the crime. And we
don't even know how much of a crime was in
(01:32:40):
fact committed. Remember no charges were ever pressed, he never
went to trial. This is all about This is all
about custody. We tweeted out the Brett McMurphy interview in
its entirety on our Twitter page, on our Facebook page.
Check it out. Go to the Dougout Show Facebook page.
(01:33:01):
You can listen to it. He went through the entire
timeline of events. I have no idea if if Urban
Meyers survives this thing. I do know that the one
thing I I like Mark lay Ball a lot. I
work with him some when he's at ESPN. Now his
evidence wasn't as his evidence was more hearsay, apparently in
(01:33:22):
terms of Sean Miller. And so when the Sean Miller
thing came out, about a hundred thousand dollars UH to
DeAndre Ayton, I just assumed, because I believe that the
media has multiple sources and facts all kind of lined up,
I assumed it to be accurate. I don't know who
(01:33:44):
is inaccurate, but I've seen no proof as such in
Shan Miller still the coach, which leads me to believe
Arizona doesn't believe in the validity of the account of
Mark Slab, and we haven't. Mark hasn't written anything for
ESPN dot com since, so I'm guessing he got it wrong.
So I want to make sure I take a breath.
Not that Brett McMurphy got it wrong, but he's presenting
one side of the facts as damning as the evidence
(01:34:06):
may be as much as Uh, as much as urban
Meyer's wife, Shelley, may have known another coach's wife's and
it may have Crab. I'm sure it did become knowledge
in the coach's office. We don't know the entirety of
the story. But not a good day for urban Meyer.
(01:34:26):
Not a good day. We've all had a bad day
in the golf course. Sadly, it's not always easy to fix.
To find a fix for your golf game, but it's
easy to find a fix for your check engine lighted
auto zone. The free Auto Zone Fixed Finder tool will
likely find the issue, saving your money down the road
getting the zone auto zone. We'll turn to the NFL
up coming next. John Middlecoff is a former NFL scout.
(01:34:47):
He's the host of three Now podcast and Heard podcast Network.
He just went to Niners camp. Is Jimmy Garoppolo really
Jimmy Jesus? Find out next? This is the Doug Gottlieb
Show on Fox Sports Radio Doug Godlip Show, Fox Sports Radio.
(01:35:13):
John Mentelkoff is a former NFL scout and he has
a tremendous podcast called three and Out on the Herd
podcast Network. Download it, subscribed to it, rate it as
well as my All Ball podcast. Uh John, let's let's
start with the Niners, the team you've seen most recently.
Jimmy Garoppolo comes over, sits for a while, starts five games,
(01:35:36):
three against playoff teams. Granted, the last one was against
the Rams, who shut it down didn't play all their players,
but they go five and oh, and he's rewarded with
the biggest contract in the history of the National Football League. Uh,
is he really Jimmy Jesus, is he as good as
he looked in the last five games of last season? Well,
what's going on, Doug. Yeah, all we have to go
on is the seven games he started on his career
(01:35:58):
in two in New England, which should have been four.
He was hurt in that second game, and then then
five with the Niners, and he was especially with the Niners.
You know, it's one thing throwing to Edelman, throwing the
gronk in that operation. It's another thing that the Niners
were a train wreck offensively. You know, Brian Hoyer couldn't
complete a pass, He couldn't hit water last year if
he was standing in a boat. And then Jimmy comes
(01:36:20):
in and makes Marquees Goodwin looked like a legitimate player.
Trent Taylor. I mean, he wasn't throwing to Julio Jones,
Odell Beckham. Uh. The only I would say red flag
is that when you're playing a team late in the
season that's you know, two and ten or three and twelve.
There's a team like Jacksonville that was I think Christmas Eve,
(01:36:43):
they played him and just took it, took it to him. Uh,
did Jacksonville overlook him a little bit. You know, it's
gonna be different this year when everyone's kind of gunning
for Jimmy g Everyone looks at that contract, the finances
of it. If Jimmy, let's say, would hit the open
market last year like Kirk Cousins did, he would have
got more money than Kirk Cousins. You know. I mean
(01:37:05):
he's younger, he's just more physically gifted. Now, his resume
shorter because he hasn't played as much. But if you
text all thirty two g ms in the NFL and
said Jimmy or Kirk Cousins this year, right, I think
it would be close to thirty two to nothing, don't
you I do? Okay, so you think he's as good?
Does he have the weaponry? Are they there yet? And
(01:37:26):
they've had to completely rebuild this thing. They've done so
with it with a ton of youth, a ton of
draft picks, but they haven't invested a bunch in terms
of of talent outside the numbers. Does he have the weaponry? Uh?
To make them a formidable team? I think that was
the biggest question mark yesterday going to practice. Uh. In
my takeaways, their wide receivers actually aren't bad if Pierre
(01:37:49):
Garson just returns to like what he's been, Mark Keiths Goodwin,
who's an elite track level athlete, Kyle's put you know,
kind of hold at him now. He's pretty good. And
though I think the last five games that Jimmy started
he was averaging like eighty yards a game, and yesterday
at practice. Now you know, Richard Sherman is not scrimin anymore,
(01:38:10):
so he's not going up against Stan Sanders in his prime,
but he was getting open with ease. And Dante Pettis
the guy they took in the second round from the
University of Washington. The dad's the third base coach for
the Houston Astros. He he made catches all day long. Yes,
stay in practice. I'm just reading read of today on
Twitter again today just falling. He looked exceptional. Doug and
(01:38:31):
I thought where they took him, it was like a
little bit of an overdraft. But the one thing with
offense and Kyle it's kind of improving these last several
years is he makes guys look better than they might
even be. And when he likes the guy like Jerick McKinnon,
I thought giving him seven and a half million dollars
was a tad rich But again, I'm in practice yesterday,
Jeff McKinnon looks sweet, you know, Jimmy throwing him wheel
(01:38:53):
routes and he could just fly. Oh my god. He
actually might work with Kyle so if they don't have
an Odell Beckham Jr. Or Gronk. But I think their
group might be a little underrated at this point because
everyone just looks at them like they're not very good,
and they're actually pretty solid. You mentioned Richard Sherman, the
Seattle bids a do there's not a ton of suitors.
He's coming off an Achilles tendon. Uh, he was an
(01:39:16):
elite player. He would probably be a Hall of Famer.
How did you look now? But he looks solid yesterday.
I mean, I don't know if he saw that viral
video of good Ones smoking him down the sideline. He's
never been able to run with quick guys. That's not
his deal. His deal is to get you online of
scrimmage and just me mug you and just destroy you.
You know, And he's one of the best tackling corners ever,
(01:39:37):
and you can't really feel that in a practice scenario.
He's not going to be as fast as he was
and he hasn't been really fast the last couple of years,
but his ball skills are still elite, his toughness is
still elite, and I think in the scheme uh they
do the same thing Seattle does, he'll feel really comfortable.
I think he's gonna be better than I probably been.
Most people would have assumed coming off these achilles. His
(01:40:00):
days of being that Hall of Fame level player are
probably gone. But I think he'll be a solid starter
for the fort which you know, coming off in a
Killings last year, I I would say most people would
have been like, oh, he's never He's not gonna be
able to come back. He's came back pretty quick, so
I gotta give him a lot of credit for you know,
he's always been an intelligent, hard working guy. But clearly
to rehab this quickly at that position is pretty impressive
(01:40:24):
to already just be on the field, let alone. I mean,
he's there starting corner now. The bar was low, but
he's still he used to start in corner right now,
So I didn't envision that. Six months ago John Midelkoff
joining us in the Doug Gottlieb Show, Khalil Mack hasn't
even offered a contract by the Raiders. What are your thoughts?
I mean, nuts, uh, I get coming in new coach
(01:40:44):
and it happens in sports like that's just a reality Gruden,
you know, kind of old school hard ass. But to me,
are you making a point with Khalil Mack the team
captain in the last three years running, all the old
guys like the Justin Tucks and Charles Woodson's that spent
time onund him at the end of their career when
he was young. I mean they swear by him. Just
how high level of a guy is. And this play
(01:41:06):
speaks for herself. Yesterday grew to making that comment about
how the defense sucked. You know, with Khalil Mack last year,
I would I would, you know, counter that and be like, yeah,
that's fair. But he was. It wasn't his fault. I mean,
he was dominant. It was the other ten guys that
were got awful and Jack del Rio who was a
(01:41:27):
terrible last year coaching, and Ken Norton who was fired
mid season. They couldn't cover anyone. Khalil did everything within
his power to dominate, and he did despite playing with
a bunch of guys that weren't that talented, and I
get it. I understand where the Raiders are coming from.
He's asking for, from what I've heard, more money than
Derrick got guaranteed. Derrick got seventy guaranteed. I think Khalil
(01:41:49):
wanted that seventy five range, which is a lot, you know,
for a non offense, non quarterback. But I would say
he's one of the two or three non quarterbacks in
the NFL, especially on defense, and I would do it
and feel pretty good. His best friend on the team,
Doug is Derek. You know, this isn't like he's zero drama.
I know he's holding out right now, but what he's
(01:42:10):
supposed to do show up to camp would if he
towards a c L. I mean he's only getting one
page day. You don't get three contracts when you're a
defensive then, I mean, this is it. And I think
he's in a tough spot, and I don't blame him.
I wouldn't show up. I don't know how this is
gonna get resolved. My gut would say he just shows
up Week one and plays this year on the fifth
year option, which would be a mistake upon the Raiders.
(01:42:31):
Let me go to the other side of the country.
John Middlecoff joining us on the Doug Gottlieb Show. A
former NFL scout and a good one. Follow him on
Twitter at John Middlecoff. That's Cough with k a u
f F. Also writes for The Athletic Check out that podcast.
It's called three and Out. It's part of the Heard
podcast network. He joins us here in the Doug Gotlip
(01:42:52):
Show on Fox Sports Radio. The Patriots got some some
issues there. I'm not talking about the Malcolm Butler stuf
from last year or even rebuilding the offensive line or
trying to get playmakers on the defense. What we can
count on is, you know, Tom Brady finding guys kind
of obscure wide receivers and making them better, uh than
they than they were previously. But Jordan Matthews bad hamstring pull.
(01:43:16):
They release him today. That doesn't work out, doesn't cost
m a bunch of money. But but but they're down
some numbers, especially without Julian Edelman these first four games.
And I know that they still used the first four
games is like extended training camp. But uh yeah, I mean, like, look,
they're looking at Eric Decker. What do you think of
the group that as of right now, they're trying to
(01:43:37):
throw out there with Tom Brady. I mean Dion Lewis.
I went to uh I was in Nashville for a
Baskelot party earlier this year and made a work trip
out of it and checked out Titans practice. I mean,
Dion Lewis, you forget. I was just watching the practice
like this guy is a big contributor for the Patriots
these last you know, two or three years in the
passing game, especially uh Sony Michelle. I was at the
(01:43:58):
gym the other day and they will replay that Oklahoma
Georgia game. That guy is really good. You know that guy.
I think I saw on Twitter yesterday he might have
to leave practice. I don't think it was anything serious,
but that guy across my mind. Obviously you bet on
Gronk leading the team and catches, but it wouldn't shock
me to see Sony yet. You know, six D eight
and somewhere in that range. With how fast rookie player
(01:44:20):
you know, rookie running backs now contribute to have a big,
you know season catching the ball and obviously you know
eight to a thousand eight hunter with housy yards on
the ground, I think he's gonna play a huge role
but yeah, you're I mean early end the season, no
Edelman and al has gone. You know Grons, God love him,
and he's probably the best tight end ever, but he's
one hit away maybe from you know, just being over
(01:44:43):
uh and what would they do? Then you look at
the division it's terrible. I mean the the Miami. I
think Miami's a train wreck. I actually think the Jets
are probably the second best team at a quarterback just
if they can get some stability there, whether that's Donald McCown,
Teddy whoever. I think the Bills are gonna take a
massive step at Bay Over to go nine and seven
last year with that roster is crazy. They're probably gonna
(01:45:04):
take a step back, even though they're gonna improve, I
think big picture, So that to me, the Patriots as
long as Brady does not get hurt, which I mean,
you know in pro sports, y're over fourty years old.
It could happen at any moment. I remember three or
four years ago, go into a Raider game and that
was the year Payton Manning stall off a cliff and
he just literally just fall off a cliff. Now just
watch an NFL network, it looks like Brady still slinging
(01:45:26):
the round, but eventually he's gonna get hurt. You know,
he's just he's old. So if that, if that happened,
I think the Patriots would be in major trouble because
Jimmy g is now out here in the Bay Area
where I'm at, and Brian Hoyer. I don't know if
they would be a lock even how bad that division
is to win it if Brady you know, missed ten games.
(01:45:46):
Their roster is not great. Um, the new look Green
Bay Packers, you know, they they're they're given it. They're
given the Davante Adams a chance to be a star.
So they've rearranged. They give him Jimmy Graham as a
safety blame get and they they I think, dramatically improve
their defense, although although Jake Bryan is out for the year,
(01:46:07):
who was supposed to be their middle linebackers, So the
best lay plans of mice and men do in fact
go awry. What are your thoughts on the Packers as
they have as they have completely revamped their front office
and thus revamped some of their roster. Yeah, I think
that GM proved during the draft. He's pretty good. And
you know, they're they're probably the closest thing to like
a basketball team in the NFL, they're they're you know,
(01:46:28):
if Rogers is Rogers like Lebron, if he played sixteen games,
they're a locked playoff team. There might not be a
lock to win the division because Minnesota is so good,
but their playoff teams. If he gets hurt again, they're
in major trouble. Now, their roster is better than it
was last year, but still they are so dependent on
that player. Uh Now, in most good teams are dependent
(01:46:50):
on their quarterback. But they've just had it happened to
them several times the last five years. Right, He's had
some injuries and they've had to go to the backup.
I do think they're horner situation. Mike Patton. People forget
he was really good, you know under Rex Ryan back
in the day. Now, that roster was good with the Jets,
but that defense was unreal. Even in Cleveland, he did
(01:47:11):
somewhat of a solid job. That's that's not an easy
place to coach. He didn't last long, but their team
was feisty with Mike Petton, so their defense should be
a lot better. It's kind of been the downfall to me.
If Aaron Rodgers stays healthy, you know, wouldn't shock me
if the Green Bay Packers are in the Super Bowl,
wouldn't shock me at all. Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio.
(01:47:31):
Zeke Eli's running back coach, says, he looks like a
completely different guy. I think he will be, not just
because it's year three and he's motivated, but Tyrn Smith
being healthy again, as well as some new blood at
at wide receiver and at tight end. What type of
year do you think Zeke and the Cowboys offense has?
I like the Cowboys more than most. They went nine
and seven last year, and Zeke spent six games in Cabo,
(01:47:54):
you know, and before right before he left, they were humming.
They came in and they beat the forty nine ers,
like forty to nothing. Now the four niners are bad,
but it was like, God, they're kind of peaking. And
then he leaves and it kind of unraveled a little bit,
uh to me, if he's healthy, Like the Packers, they're
a little different because they don't they're not dependent on
the quarterback as much. Now Dak needs to play better,
but if Zeke is there for sixteen games, I just
(01:48:18):
don't see how they don't win ten I know Jerry
and just kind of all of this drama that follows
the Cowboys, but I do think it's you know, they
proved two years ago with that they were good. Then
last year they were good before Zeke had served the
suspension in the middle of the year, which was just wild.
And this year, if he just stays on the field,
they are they're good. I mean, I don't think the Eagles,
(01:48:39):
who are really good too, are just some lock to
win the NFCS. I do think the Cowboys could win
it now Eagles, given that they got two good quarterbacks
and the roster so deep. But I think some people
are discounting the Cowboys a little bit, like they're over
under eight. I think there are a lot to go over.
I agree. John. Download the Herd podcast Networks three and out.
(01:49:03):
It's all football, all the time, Foreman and Vell Scout
does a great, great job. By the way, this Sunday,
he'll be co hosting with Mark Willard right here on
Fox Sports Radio. John, we gotta do this again. Can't
wait to hear this weekend. We appreciate you joining us
in the Doug got Leave Show. Thanks for having me on, Doug.
I appreciated pleasures All minds, bringing Dan Buyer a lot
going on in the world of sports. Dan covers all
(01:49:24):
of it for you. Go. The ex wife of Ohio
State assistant coach Zack Smith, Courtney Smith, is speaking out
about her relationship with her ex husband. She detailed the
abuse that she endured with Stadium Sports and what she
did with that information. Somebody is crying out for help.
The coach, along with the coach's wife have a duty.
(01:49:46):
They have a duty to do something to help instead
of worrying about winning game, somebody's safety and safety of
their children and that the environment that they're in needs
to be more important. As she told Stadium Sports and
also broke the news to reporter Brett McMurphy, Courtney Smith
told the wife of Urban Meyers, Shelley Meyer, about the
(01:50:07):
alleged de celt that occurred in twenty now. Another text
exchange with the wife of another assistant coach coach that
is claims Urban Meyer met with Zack Smith about those
fifteen allegations, but the then assistant denied them. Ohio State
nor Urban Meyer have yet to comment on the report.
Yahoo Sports is saying that Meyer is meeting with athletic
director Jeane Smith. This afternoon, some news show the NFL
(01:50:31):
Packers imbacker Jake Ryan's gonna miss the entire twenty eighteen season.
He towards a c l and practice on Monday, while
Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin could miss the entire preseason
because of a sore knee. According to ESPN, Bucketeers gave
general manager Jason Leder one year extension through twenty nineteen.
Astros have opened it up on the Mariners eight to
two right now as Marwin Gonzalez is homeward twice for Houston.
(01:50:52):
They're playing at the top of the fifth inning. OS
be the Yankees today. Seven to five. That's the Nationals
down the Mets. That is five to three. The Indians
blanked the Twins by a score of two to nothing.
Pacers gave head coach Nick McMillan a contract extension. Doug
According to ESPN, mm hmm, great stuff, great stuff, dan
(01:51:13):
um Nate McMillan gets the contract extension. Did a tremendous job.
And think about how last year people thought the sky
was falling as that Paul George trade landed them Victor
Oladipo and Domas Sabonis and turns out, you know they
they came up short, didn't make enough shots, but nearly
took down the Calves in the first round of the
NBA Playoffs. Congrats and Nate, who's widely regarded as one
(01:51:34):
of the one of the one of the good guys
in in the sport of basketball, doug out them show
Fox Sports Radio. Speaking of guys in the sport of basketball,
there's more on this Draymond Green story when we get
to that with Dan Buyer. One second year, keep your
engine lighting check with the free auto zone fixed finder
service that helps you troubleshoot the problem. Let's get you
what you need, get in the zone Auto Zone Buyer.
(01:51:57):
Did you see more details of this, uh, this kerfuffle
between Tristan Thompson and Draymond Green. I don't think I
saw a lot more than from what we talked about yesterday.
Apparently this is new news. Apparently what took place was
they were at one party and Draymond was talking um
(01:52:20):
as the boys say, ish, right, he was talking ish.
There was mentions of Kardashians, mentions of Chloe, mentions of
Lebron like it was Draymond was was was talking trash
and apparently apparently he was. He was warned by Tristan.
(01:52:41):
Then they ran into each other and another post s
B party and uh, Draymond continued, and that's when he
didn't punch him. There wasn't a sucker punch. It was
a sucker mush. Like you you went mushing somebody's faces. Yeah,
just putting your hand it over their face and pushing
(01:53:01):
them away like that. Yes, yes, so h so, some
people said. Some people say that Draymond went up to
this from Jason McIntire. Draymond went up to apologize to Tristan,
uh for what happened Game four the Finals. Tristan said,
nah man, and Draymond tried again, come on, I didn't
mean it. Uh, then whapped Tristan ends up punching him.
(01:53:22):
Other reports are that's not at all what took place.
That Draymond was continued to talk trash and what he
thought was a playful manner, and Tristan had had enough,
so like, look, you're talking about trash. Eventually it's gonna
it's I mean, at least I don't mind it ending
in a mush. At least it didn't get taken to
an even even higher level talking trash on the court,
(01:53:46):
I can understand, but if you're in a social setting,
that can get really old, really quick, no matter how
good are friends or you know, you are with someone,
that gets old, especially when you're not friends. Right, Like,
even like talking trash with friends can turn bad when
you're talking trash when people who aren't friends that now
that that that get that gets even worse because they
(01:54:08):
don't understand. Wait, is this guy joking? Is this guy
just busting busting? But like, look at you're clouding me
in front of everybody? Or it lend the Spider getting
shot and Good Fellas? Right, what am I a clo?
What am I a clown? What am I here to
amuse you? Dance dance funny Spider dance shoots him in
the foot, Spider talks trash. Look, this is what happened to.
(01:54:31):
Spider got shot in in Good In in Good Fellas,
Spider got shot. Doug gotlib show on Fox Sports Radio
j Jerr Smith maybe in some serious trouble with the
NYPD will tell you about it in the press next,
(01:54:51):
or I VI is it progressive dot com today and
find out if you could say this is the Doug
Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio, Doug Olip Show, Fox
Sports Radio. MM football is back tomorrow. Now, you guys
know that Ravens Bears Ravens Bears, which means, here's what's
(01:55:14):
gonna happen. I'm just I'm calling it right now. I'm
calling right now, Lamar Jackson's gonna make an incredible run
and an incredible throw and people are going to freak out.
I just listen. The National Football League is not about
what you do against the twos and the threes when
you're a freak athlete outside the pocket. It's about what
you do inside the pocket, what you can do consistently.
(01:55:38):
And I'll tell you right now, I think Flacco is
actually gonna have a pretty good year. I think Flacco
is Look, his contract is ridiculous, cap number, it's it's
hurt the Ravens. I didn't like it when it was signed.
I didn't understand why people thought he had him over
the barrel when they won the Super Bowl. That said,
he's come off a couple of injuries the past couple
of years, he's totally healthy. Wouldn't stop me at all.
(01:55:59):
He has a really good year and they use Lamar
Jackson in creative ways. Lamar Jackson's not an NFL ready quarterback,
even if even if he's to play this year, he'd
have a couple of good games and then he would
come back down to earth because he is incredibly erratic.
With some of his throws. He just is, He just is.
And then with his reads and he's gonna run too much.
And while he's a freak, and you run away from
(01:56:21):
all it takes and to not run away from one
dude in the NFL. So he'll make some great play.
The bigger question is Mitch Trabinsky year two. Can he play?
They think he can in Chicago. I can't wait to
see him. Let's get to the press, the press. Do
(01:56:42):
do do do do do do do. Car shopping can
be confusing with terms like dealer price, list price, and
invoice price. True Car shows you what other people pay
for the car that you want, so you can recognize
a good price when you're ready for a new or
use car. Visit True Car. You're gonna enjoy more confident
car by experience. Dan Buyer, my good friend, talented friend.
(01:57:03):
You can hear on weekends here on Fox Sports Radio
what he got for me? But Doue, I want to
quickly weigh out on your Joe Flacco point, which I
agree with you, because, as you mentioned, the last time
that Joe Flacco bet on himself, he uh he cashed in.
And this is really the first time that he is
feeling a challenge, maybe feeling some pressure to perform, and
the first time he did it, it paid off for him.
(01:57:25):
So what why not expect that it could happen to
team ya? Remember, they should have made the playoffs last year,
like they He wasn't good and they weren't great, but
they should have made the playoffs. And I think they've
they've improved their roster. Uh, wouldn't stun me at all
to see them be the kind of surprised team in
that in that in that division. I think the Browns
(01:57:46):
are better. I don't think the Steelers are as good.
I think you know we're all talking about Levy on
Bell Dude, losing Ryan Chays here is is a killer.
It's just a he's so important to their defense. He
covered up some of the things they didn't have um
and then and you know, the Bengals are still a
bit of a hot mess. They'll be better than they were,
but still not great. I don't see any reason the
(01:58:06):
Ravens can't compete for that division. But we'll see, we'll see.
We'll get to more NFL news in a bit. But
Doug Brett McMurphy joined you earlier and had this to
say when you were talking about the type of guy
that Zack Smith was, that I can't share because I
just can't because of various reasons. But there's worse than that. Now.
Cleveland dot com and the Columbus Dispatch are now reporting
(01:58:29):
stuff from police documents about Smith. These are more allegations
made against the former Ohio state head coach towards his wife,
Courtney uh The reports say that Courtney Smith claims she
was constantly stocked and the harassment never stopped. That Zack
Smith would snoop through her windows, including as recently as
December where he was given a trust pass warning by authorities.
(01:58:51):
Courtney Smith claimed that Zack Smith installed security cameras in
their home to watch her, her boyfriend, and his kids,
and at times, Courtney Smith claimed that Zack Smith would
corner her and grope her, pulling his pants down, begging
her to have sex. There's just some more things about
the former Ohio state assistant coach. I was fired. I'm
(01:59:11):
reaching the point to which I really don't want to
know any more information here. Um those documents that they
are all our police documents, and his attorney has come
out and said they look, all this stuff will be corroborated.
That that you know, she was calling the cops when
he dropped off his son because she didn't show up
to the predesignated location. Right. Um, I don't know about
(01:59:33):
the drop in the pants thing. I don't. I'm hoping
that's back when they were married. Uh, And you know,
I don't know. I'm not gonna explain away somebody's behavior.
The cameras thing is interesting. Every We don't have cameras
in our house, but everyone else I know does, and
I mean they monitor those things. Now, you don't put
a camera in the bedroom, but you do put a
(01:59:56):
camera everywhere else. Like the cameras thing is every people
have cameras everywhere. I gotta my neighbor across the street.
We call him, uh, we call him the serge. And um,
I mean, like, look, we had my car, my car
got broken into earlier this year. We went right to this,
We right right to ascume me the sheriff. We went
(02:00:16):
right to the sheriff and he identified it. We sent
him to the cops. So I don't know this we're
getting this is one side. This is This is, by
the way, why people don't want their divorce court proceedings,
they don't want to up being aired in public because yeah,
it gets super super ugly, which is where this is
going onto The NFL Seahawks rode receiver Doug Baldwin could
(02:00:38):
miss the entire preseason because of his knee injury. That
according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, that's I think a
major injury. I mean, he is he is. He is
the as much as Russell Wilson was running for his
life last year, he was really running to the arms
of Doug Baldwin. Like Doug Baldwin had a great season.
He is a consistent pat past etching threat for the Seahawks,
(02:01:01):
and look, you can shut guys down and that that
can be that that can happen, But the idea they're
really kind of dodgy about it, and we don't know.
Doug Baldwin's coming off the year in which he averaged
thirteen yards to catch you at eight touchdown receptions, seventy
five receptions. I mean, you go and look at Doug.
Doug Baldwin's productivity over the past couple of years, uh
(02:01:23):
the last three years, seventy eight, ninety four and seventy
five catches, a hundred, four hundred and a hundred seventeen targets,
picture of consistency. If he doesn't play early for the Seahawks,
it could be a long season. Think about how that
defense has changed for the worst. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes
has been having some issues with interceptions in training camp.
(02:01:44):
Offensive coordinator Eric bonnim He told the ESPN that Mahomes
was having some hiccups after throwing three picks, and Wednesday session,
Holmes has reportedly thrown seven interceptions in six workouts. Here's
the thing with Pat Mahomes, and this is really important.
He has a He is the opposite the Zacht, opposite
of Alex Smith. Alex Smith is the picture consistency. He's
(02:02:05):
captain checked down. He's super safe, but he will not
He might not win you a game, but he wasn't
gonna lose your games, right and it heard him in
the playoffs knowingly, they went out and got Pat Mahomes,
who's the opposite huge armed talent, I mean top five
in the league already armed talent. Placco by the way,
in that discussion as well with with armed talent when
healthy um, but he's sloppy with his footwork. He didn't
(02:02:29):
come from a traditional NFL offense. Like, there's a lot
of work to be done there. I think there's gonna
be some games in which he throws four or five picks.
I think there's some gonna be games which he throws
four or five interceptions. It's gonna be a wild year
in Kansas City, TMZ reports Jr. Smith maybe in hot
water after alleged the throwing the cell phone of a
man who wanted a picture of him into a construction zone.
(02:02:50):
Smith the climb demand's request for a photo over the weekend,
but the man took one anyway, so j R. Allegedly
grabbed that phone and threw it into that construction zone.
Since Smith was not on private property and on a
public sidewalk, the fan may have a right to take
the photograph, so Jerry Smith could be in hot water.
I like the I like the I like the Jerry
Seinfeld Jerry Seinfeld on comedians and cars with coffee. He
(02:03:13):
constantly says that, like what if somebody takes a picture
of He's like, so, so what? I I get that
you don't want it in your face? And that's and
you this guy asks and you say no when he
does it anyway, and you get upset somebody takes a
picture of you. So what, don't be defensive. You want
to take a picture, Fine, take a picture. That's the
press bag. It out there and pressed. That was the

more on the urban Meyer issue. Um, I don't think
the proceedings between Zack Smith and his wife and all
(02:03:56):
the stuff that's gonna come out and matter. I think
what matters is why I wasn't Urban Meyer honest about it,
saying he didn't know anything about it. Stay tuned. You
could lose your job over something like this. I'm Doug
Gottli
