You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Boom, What Up America,
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Coming to you from
the West side, Best side, Man. We got a lot
to get to. Hopefully you are having a spectacular day,
whether it's the end of your summer, at the beginning
of the fall football essentially back week zero in college football.

(00:46):
Kirk Farren's head coach of Iowa will join us later
on the show. A matter of fact, one hour from
right now to you minus one hour one hour from
right now. Kirk ferrens Iowa will join us kind of
like a bi yearly visit it right. He usually comes
on with us sometime before the season. Middle of the season. Uh.
He was ranked as as both one I think one

(01:06):
of the most underrated and overrated coaches as well in
college football. The bus Jerome Bettis Hall of Famer Pittsburgh
Steelers also in l A. Ram will join us in
about a half hour. Uh. Mike Schlitt, who's the Cardinals
new manager? M St. Louis Cardinals sitting there right in
the hunt, especially with the Dodgers, it's spitting up all
over themselves. Kenny Jansen is up two home runs last night.

(01:30):
He is. That's the first time he's done that in
an inning since two thirteen. And oh yeah, by the way,
he's the seventh seventh Dodger picture to take an l
in the last ten games. Wow. Daniel Jeremiah will join
us later on in the show. You see him on
the NFL Network and if you listen to Charger games
you hear him as well. We'll we'll get his his
thoughts on my take on Andrew Luck. So we saw

(01:53):
Andrew Luck and really kind of dug in last night
and watched him against the Baltimore Ravens. First, let's hear
from Andrew Luck as to his thoughts on how he played.
Not very well. Uh, but it was fun. Was good, good,
good chance to be out in front of the home crowd.
We've certainly got a lot of things to work on
as a team. And then asked the best the beauty

(02:14):
of it on a personalfe truck. I've got a lot
of things to work on at the same time we
did we did some good things. And uh, if we
continue to improve every day as a team, as his
individual players, will be all right. It's been less than
two months since Andrew Luck started throwing the duke the
official football the Nastional Football League. So what happens here
is we lose all track, all perspective. And I understand

(02:39):
that there is some pushback against Andrew Luck. No, he
has not won a Super Bowl. Um, yes, his coach
did get fired, but and he was kind of a
high turnover guy. But there is a sense from some
that when he signed his contract extension he became the
highest paid player at the time the Nation Football League,
that he hadn't lived up to his lofty expectations. I

(02:59):
find that football if you actually dig in and look,
you know, I mean his his number two wide receiver
was Reggie Wayne when he when he complained when he
had forty touchdown passed. This couple of years ago the
peak of Andrew Luck. His third year in the Nation
Football League, team one eleven games went the a f
C Championship Game. Reggie Wayne was at thirty six years old,

(03:21):
their second best wide receiver, and Trent Richardson was his
star running back. That's what I got for you. So
to throw forty touchdown passes in and of itself is spectacular.
To do it with that as your second and third
option to t Y Hilton, and to do so with
Chuck Bugano, who come on, man, Chuck mcgonald is not
a great head coach. I think we know that, al right,

(03:42):
Chuck bmcgonald is one of those guys. Good guy, good coordinator,
good defensive guy. Had he not gotten cancer, would have
been fired a year or two earlier. That's just the
reality of it. Alor, had he not gotten cancer and
simply taking a leave of absence for any other health
issue probably doesn't get his job back, um, But instead

(04:02):
he does. And Pagano appeared to be in over his head,
so did Ryan Grigson, their general manager. It was an
absolute mess, and now he's dealing with They're at a
town deficiency in comparison to other teams in the NFL.
They tried to reboot the line. He did figure out

(04:23):
sing to figure out that that Jack Doyle is a
guy as a tight end that he can find. But
for the most part, for the most part, he's playing
with t Y Hilton went healthy and not a whole
lot else. But maybe it's because the money he signed for.
Maybe it's because he was the number one overall pick,
and people thought that that that when you're when you're

(04:44):
that highly touted, you immediately hit the ground running and
win a Super Bowl. That hasn't happened for anybody that's
been on a really bad team. Like, look, let's have
some we have zero perspective zero. If you want to
tell me that Ben Roethlisberger was fifteen and one when
he was a rookie, that's fine. Ben Roethlisberger was on

(05:04):
a really good team, really good team. And by the way,
when Ben Roethlisberger won the Super Bowl is first time around,
he had the lowest quarterback rating as a Super Bowl
winning quarterback in the history of the sport. Okay, so
the idea that they didn't win it because of they
want it in spite of Ben Roethlisberger. If you want

(05:25):
to tell me that Aaron Rodgers is better than Andrew Luck,
that's fine. But Aaron Rodgers didn't play his first couple
of years. And remember his first year taking over for
Brett Farve Bearn. Brett Farve lost to the Green Bay Packers.
Alicten Be lost to the New York Giants at home
in the snow in the playoffs. Retires. Next year, Aaron
Rodgers takes over. And I believe Aaron Rodgers, the best

(05:46):
quarterback in the sport, didn't make the playoffs. Bunch of
close losses, many of them because his defense stunk. But
he was actually on a good team when Tom Brady
took over after sitting. It is only after Drew Bledsoe,
who was on a good team got hurt. All these
other guys that are number one overall picks, it took

(06:07):
a year or two. It didn't take Andrew Luck a
year or two. He took over the worst team in football,
made them a playoff team, thirty three games first three years,
and they finished in the a f C Championship Game
losing to the Patriots. Were they great? No? Were they
better than they should have been because of Luck? Yes?
So you can argue with me all you want about

(06:29):
how great he was, or how good he was, or
how he's progression in first three years. It was great
offensive line was in shambles. Then he and he gets hurt,
plays hurt and still finds a way to be solid
eight and seven in his last year, playing with what
most people believe was a torn labor m at the time.
Take a listen with Tiger Woods said earlier today about

(06:50):
playing in through his rehab to go through what I've
gone through. I didn't also play last year. I mean
I didn't also ever play again. I was hoping to
bibill to play off of my with my kids and
my buddies at home. I wasn't thinking about the tour.
And now here I'm containing a major championships and I've
had a chance to win a couple of major championships. Yeah,
so we have to have perspective on Andrew Luck who

(07:11):
we do you know, vie ever play football, a game
he hadn't played for two years. He just started touching
the duke two months ago, and now all of a sudden,
there's these lofty expectations. He did not play well last night.
He was not sharp. They did not protect him, nor
was anybody running wide and free and open. But you
have to have perspective on where he was and where

(07:32):
he is now. And the possibility of where he can go.
And you've got to have clear perspective on what's around
him because the answer to this point is not a
whole hell of a lot. So look, I watched Ford
quarterbacks last night. Luck looked rusty as hell and a
little bit overwhelmed by the speed and uncomfortable behind that

(07:53):
offensive line. Jacoby Brissette looked like a quality backup who
could be a starter. Joe Flacco was probably the best
quarterback last night. And Lamar Jackson kudos to Booker McFarland
for saying what we have all said, and uh, he
gives credence to which is he's just not accurate enough
to be an NFL quarterbrop right quarterback right now, period. Stop.

(08:14):
You can marvel at his athleticism, you can have great
wonder for when he does throw a strike in the
end zone for a touchdown, but the reality of it
is he's so erratic that he's gonna get you beat,
and he moves so much and runs so often that
he's going to get himself hurt. He's just on an
NFL quarterback yet will he be? We'll see how he develops.

(08:37):
We've all had a bad day on the golf course. Sadly,
it's not easy to find a fix for your golf game,
but it's easy to find a fix for your check
engine light. The free AutoZone Fixed Finder tool will find
the likely issue, saving you money down the road getting
the zone auto zone summation is this look? I thought
Andrew Luck was on his way to being a Hall
of Fame quarterback. There's no reason to believe he won't
eventually get back there. This is why why watching a

(09:00):
guy work out the kinks against live defense and having
a chance to really focus in on what's missing so far,
and we'll see what's missing. They don't seem to have
a ton of talent from the throat to or to
protect him with. And Andrew Luck is missing some of
his own normal pinpunt point accuracy. Cut of next is

(09:20):
the most controversial rule and perforce professional sports since the
coach rule. Since he's got since the catch rule. I'll
give you my thoughts on the further evolving of the
helmet rule coming up next in the Doug Gotlip Show
Fox Sports Radio. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Doug Dot Leap Show weekdays at noon eastern three
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart

(09:42):
Radio app Doug got Leap Show, Fox Sports Trader. You
guys see the story about Richie Incognito. He already had
the accusations about threatening people at a gym. Now, the
former NFL offensive lineman is in police custody misdemeanor charges
of disorderly conduct making threat to a person in Scottsdale.
According to police, they called They were called to Messenger

(10:06):
Pinnacle Peak Mortuary, where Incognito was making arrangements for his
dad's funeral. Incognito reportedly was upset with the staff and
began to damage property inside the business and shouted employees.
At several points during his contact with staff, Incognito threatened
to retrieve guns from his vehicle returned to shoot the employees.

(10:29):
Of course the second time. Remember two days after being
released in the Bears by the Bills, he was in
Boca Raton, Florida, during which police believed that Incognito was
in an altered and paranoid state. Incognito per reports through
items that Jim employees and patrons believed ordinary citizens were
government officials. And we're tracking and recording him. Did I

(10:52):
tell you my rich incognito story ramos no no no music.
Did I tell you this one? I don't believe? So okay,
So I was, I do um hot yoga. There's a
place by work. I do it in a place by
my home where I do it. And it's not like
bick rum. It's not you know, power vinyasa yoga. It's

(11:15):
like yoga lift right, you're doing some yoga movements, but
you're also doing some light lifting. It's a little bit
of cardio, you know. It's like jazzer sized meets meets
yoga put in a hot room. That's kind of what
it is. So I started my kids are out of town,
and I start going. I go sometimes at night when
my wife was out of town. Guy goes seven or
eight o'clock and I you just feels like it cleanses

(11:36):
your whole body. You just sweat so much. So I've
seen a bunch of different there's a bunch of basketball
guys that live around here, baseball guys that that live,
Angels and other foreign players live by here. And you
get done, you and yoga, and you running a guy something.
Then one day they're going, oh, big white dude looks
like baby Huey tat it up and he's over there

(11:57):
grunting and sweating and he's really I mean, he's really affect.
It's hot. I mean there's different levels of hot yoga.
This one's hot. And I'm like, where do I know
that guy from? Why do I know that guy? Anyway,
I get done doing it, and uh, you know, everybody
lee walks out at once and it becomes, you know,
kind of like a bottleneck. And you have your weights

(12:17):
in your hand. You're supposed to wipe them off before
you put put them back in the rack, and so
I just kind of waited a couple extra moments to
make sure there were sometimes I hate I just hate
waiting lines. So he was apparently doing the same thing
and walking back and and he's like, man, this retirement stuff,
it's hard to push yourself. And I was like, why

(12:39):
do I know this guy from? I put my put
my weights down, a mop them off, wipe off the flop, sweat,
have a drink of water, walk out into the front.
And he's walking out. He's like, hey, man, good job today.
You gave dabt me up. He's like, ritchie, I'll see
around here. It's rich in cognito that's my Riaching Cognita story,

(13:00):
Hot Yoga and Orange County. Never know he Swaggy pe
was was in my class a couple of days ago too,
Swaggy p So. But yeah, Richie Incognito, that's a weird one.
And some of this, some of the Ritchie Incognito and look,
Mitchie and Cognio could have had a chemical deficiency anyway.
He's had some stuff his whole career. But some of

(13:22):
it could be yum, made worse because of the repeated
blows to his head. Some of it can be being
made worse from whatever else he's ingested to his body,
and some of it can be just natural, you know
nature if you will. But whatever it is, I think
that's a at least a portion of the reason that

(13:44):
the helmet rule was changed so quickly. I honestly think
Marcus Williams missing Stefon Diggs on the last play of
the Vikings win over the over the New Orleans Saints
that was a part of it. How many times have
you seen a guy lower his head trying spear guy's
legs and get jumped over in the NFL? How many
times you've seen that, like on a sweep or when

(14:05):
a guy catches a football, he's running. You know, you
see a guy jump, how do you jump over somebody
who's going after your legs because they have their head down.
And maybe it's it's just as simple as Ryan Shay's
ears lying there motionless. I've heard Colin Cowherd kind of hypothesized, Hey,
maybe the NFL has new information as to concussions and
head trauma. I don't think that's what it is. I

(14:28):
think that they're they were getting to the point where
somebody's gonna die, Like the way I look at Bills Mafia.
You guys ever watched Bill's Mafia on um on social
media the day of a Bills game. Have you guys
ever seen some of this stuff, you know, between between
you know, drinking beer out of somebody else's booty, crack

(14:50):
lighting something on fire, or jumping and breaking a table
whatever it is, Like Bill's Mafia is nuts, but at
some point somebody's gonna get seriously hurt or maybe even
die trying to pull off one of these Bills Mafia
stunts or a copycat of a Bills Mafia stunt. That's
how I think the NFL felt when they're watching the

(15:12):
Pittsburgh Steelers and Ryan Shay's years lying motionless on the
football field. Do we have to get to the point
where somebody has to die before we take a serious
look at how we go about what we're doing. Look
at college football. We we've done that with you know, Dj.
The only reason Dj Durkin is gonna lose his job
at Maryland is not because his his strength coach is

(15:34):
a jerk and yelling at dudes and and being a
neandrewthal that that's not it. The reason is because George
McNair died. Look, Oregon had two players nearly die last year,
but they didn't, so Willie Tagger wasn't fired even though
his strength coach was over the top. And I think

(15:56):
that the NFL is reacting that way. React in the
way they're reacting because they know how close they came
to losing Ryan Shazier. They watch Ryan jazer walk in
and out of different office buildings, watch them on social media,
on on TV, and like, man, are we lucky? We
gotta change this now. Mike Zimmer doesn't seem to care

(16:17):
about how lucky they are. He's the coach of the
Vikings former defensive cording your quote, it's gonna cost some
people some jobs, playoffs, jobs, the whole bit. I guess
we haven't had any calls on us so far. It's
just hard to figure out. No one has ever said
to me, Hey, don't worry about it. We're gonna call
it less, or we're gonna we're gonna get straightened out
in the regular season, we're gonna come or we're gonna

(16:40):
come up with a revised rule. No one's ever said
that now. League officials are this per per Pro Football Talk,
going to revisit a discussion on the helmet rule quote,
per a source close to with source with knowledge of
the situation. A previously scheduled conference called will take up

(17:00):
the issue of the suddenly controversial new rule, which had
been hiding in plain sight but didn't become an issue
until the preseason began. But while it wasn't scheduled specifically
discussed possible fixes to the rule, it is expect it
is expected that participants in the call will lobby for
potential tweaks. The idea is this. The NFL has not

(17:24):
said we're changing the rule, or the rule is wrong,
or we're gonna soften the rule, but that's probably what's
gonna happen. What do you have to what? What has
to happen in order for NFL players, NFL coaches, and
even NFL officials to start officiating and taking these hits

(17:44):
out of the game. You know, when a guy sliding,
if you hit him, should that be an automatic ejection?
I don't think that's crazy at all. Guys goes into side.
The problem with it is it had been so quick.
But guys have they have trained themselves to always lead

(18:05):
with their helmet. They have, and they're gonna have to
relearn how they hit. I told you guys before, and
I'll tell you again. I mean, look, I'm I'm I'm
not a denier of the problem with football. I'm not
a denier. I'm not a denier of the problem with
of the problems with football. But the idea that, hey,

(18:27):
football's dangerous sport, can do nothing about it, that's the
dumbest thing I've ever heard. It's the dumbest thing I've
ever heard. NASCAR didn't change how there, It didn't change there,
didn't have major safety changed until Darryl Earn Hard Junior died.
Like if anything, football got got a reprieve from God

(18:52):
That's what they did, because very easily could have what
we lost. Ranch Trine stays here last year. Would that
have been enough? Well, that happen enough at Brendan sixteen.
B O. L We in Bill's Mafia knew the risk
and he signed up. If he dies, he dies. That
sounds good. Somebody dies, and then you know guys are

(19:13):
gonna be in jail or lose their job or never
be able to go to a football game again, or
there won't be You're gonna end up ruining it for
all of Bill's Mafia fans, Like there's a limit, there's
a point there. You start jumping off two story buildings
onto a white plastic table trying to go w w E.
You forget that those guys are only skilled professionals on
how they jump, but they're trained how to land and
others how to get out of the way. Bill's Mafia dude,

(19:36):
I'm just warning you some bad's gonna happen. And I
like you a lot. I love your spirit more than
I love your spirit. So what the NFL is saying
is like, look, we got a previously scheduled conference call.
You want to ask us about it? Sure, will we
take up suggestions. Put him in the suggestion box. That's
what the NFL needs, is a suggestion box. Can you

(19:58):
imagine we saw this in the estion box and we
decide to go with it. Online car shopping can be
confusing anymore. With True Bryce from True Car, now you

Let's welcome to Isaac lowan car with an update. Isaac
what he got that afternoon? Doug, the Washington National's fire
sale is apparently on Multiple outlets report the trading second

(20:19):
baseman Daniel Murphy to the Cubs. MLB dot Com reports
the Nationals also put Bryce Harper on waivers, but could
not reach a deal with the team that claimed him,
so he's apparently staying. Jeff Passon of Yahoo reports that
the Nationals are trading first base and Matt Adams to
the Cardinals. On that note, Cardinals infielder Matt Carpenter just
tweeted quote, Matt Adams wanted some salsa when the Nationals

(20:41):
were in town last week. Cordially, I had to deny
him of that request due to conflicting interests. Now my
friend I shall bay View in salsa unquote. Meanwhile, National's
GM Mike Rizzo but his spin on the moves moments ago.
These moves allows to financial flexibility going into the two
thousand nineteen season, also allows some of our young players

(21:04):
to get valuable major league experience, and also allows us
to get the good young prospect players that will need
in the minor leagues for the future. NBA Brooklyn Nets
forward Kenneth for Reed was arrested Sunday for unlawful possession
of marijuana in Bridge Hampton, New York. Former NFL offensive
alignment Richie Incognito was arrested Monday in Scottsdale, Arizona, on

(21:26):
charges of disorderly conduct and making threats. TMZ and Pro
Football Talk report Incognito allegedly threatened employees at a funeral
home on making arrangements after the passing of his father
over the weekend, and finally, Doug It was revealed today
the Carolina Panthers rookie first round receiver d J. Moore
was charged earlier this month with reckless driving for going

(21:49):
a hundred and thirteen miles an hour in a sixty
five mile hour zone. State trooper H. L. Batista, who
cited more at one of the great line is an
incident report history, when he wrote simply quote f that
car was moving unquote. On that note back to you, Doug,

(22:10):
what time of day was the car was? It was?
The was the deal? It was after they had arrived
home from a preseason road win at Buffalo to fifty
two am. Not surprisingly, Um, it's really fast. What kind
of car does it? Do you know? What kind of
car was? H does not say. I'm going to try
and look at the actual arrest report, but I assume

(22:32):
it was not a let's put it this away, not
a compact car, not an affordable budget type vehicle. I'm kuessing, Well,
I just I don't. I don't know, like right like,
we have no idea what kind of car? Now that
that doesn't excuse it, but yeah, like the car I drive,
I think if I tried to drive that fast that
the spitometer would spin around three times and then fall off.

(22:54):
I generally signing bonus car. I genuinely think that. Um,
I think about nineties about the limit to how fist
you should be even the middle of the night, right
once you get out that you're you're really really reckless,
really reckless. But I would say, like, if you're driving
a really nice car, it sometimes doesn't feel like you're

(23:16):
going on hunting thirteen. You know, I don't know how
I have gone on hunt over a hundred thirteen in
a car. I'm not gonna sit here and be be
some moral authority. But I didn't get caught and we
um let's welcome in the bus well of the all
time great guys. A domer I remember when he came back,
uh to do some schoolwork my uh freshman or my

(23:37):
own year at Notre Dame. I met him then, I've
met him several other times. Of course, won a Super Bowl.
I'm not sure if you're wearing from Detroit. Um. During
his time as an l A Ram, he was a stud.
During his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he was just stud.
So much so he's in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
He's Jerome Bettis. He joins us on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Uh, Jerome,
I don't know if you're you're you're listening to the show.

(23:57):
But a Panthers rookie was driving one thirteen after one
of the preseason games. Um what's the fastest you've ever
gotten pulled over for going or pulled over? Nowhere near
anything like that. I mean I got pulled over maybe
doing you know, any something like that. But that was
you know, that was a fast uh ticket At the

(24:21):
time I was, I was a young guy and and
I get it. But yeah, you gotta be very careful
with that, No, no, no question about it. Give me
your sense of like, look, your legendary Steeler obviously like
those of us who remember you were great as the rent,
but you're you're synonymous with the Steelers when you see
kind of the the gap between Levian Bell and the Steelers.

(24:45):
As a guy who played for the Steelers, understand how
they've always done business, but they say, look, we've offered
him a long term deal, he just doesn't like the terms.
What are your thoughts on how they're how they're handling
their start running back? Well, you know, it's it's disappointing
because I don't think either are better without each other.
I think, you know, the Stealers need Lebian Bell to
be the best team they can be. You know, I

(25:06):
think Lebian needs the Silers to be the best player
he can be because they're gonna fully utilize his capabilities
and put him on that platform. So I think both
need each other and I just think both needs both
needs to really work through it. I think, you know,
obviously Lebian understands his situation being that this is probably

(25:28):
his last contract um because you know, he he went
through a couple of those years under the franchise tag.
You know those years are lost and now you're a
different age, and so you gotta look at it from
the standpoint of this is your last opportunity to really
capitalize on it. If you take it out another year,

(25:49):
you're putting yourself in harm's way again. So there's a
value to that. And I just think the Stillers also
need to understand that the market for running back is
a lot better than it has been in the past.
I think Girly has has shown that, So I think
now that I think the Steelers need to reassess themselves.

(26:11):
So I think both parties need need to go back
and realize that they need to get this deal done,
because if you don't get Levian Belle signed, the window
for the Steelers win the championship, I think it's that
much closer to closing. Very quickly. How much different is

(26:31):
this team without Ryan Shay's here in the middle of defensively,
Oh there is this night day. You know, he was
the hard and soul that that defense. And so to
to lose the player of his caliber, his speed, um,
it's you know, it's somebody's somebody you really can't replace.

(26:51):
And so now they're in that unendiable position of trying
to replace them. And that's you know, that's a problem.
So that defense is built for the inside linebackers to
make all the plays, and we when you don't have
your most talented player at that position, it's going to show. Um. Historically,

(27:16):
the inside linebackers have always been the studs on that defense. Uh,
and did not have them there. It's uh, it's a big,
big loss, and you know, it's one of those I
don't know if they will be able to overcome that.
Stug gotlip show here on Fox Sport Trader, that's the
voice of the bus, your own Bettus. He's joining us
here on the Doug Golive Show. Um. Okay, So look,

(27:37):
one of the reasons I believe that the helmet rule
was put in place was because of Ryan Shazia, Right,
Like he dipped his head at just the wrong moment
to make a hit, and he ends up temporarily paralyzed
and he may never play, likely never plays football again.
You're a running back, and um, I do think people

(27:58):
you know, because of your nickname, because of your style
late in your career, they forget how as a as
a big man, how agile you were, especially your first
three or four years with the Rams. You didn't always
run over guys, you ran around them, and you were
quite agile. But still there was a time to which
time in place, I'm gonna lower my hat and I'm
gonna make you pay. What's your what's your feelings about

(28:19):
how they've instituted and legislative this new helmet rule, helmet rule,
you know what, I get it. I understand the idea,
your theory, but the practicality of the rule doesn't work. Uh.
You know, I'm all for you're making the game safer
for the next generations to come, but at some point

(28:41):
you you you run. It's a fine line between destroying
the game. Because you data the Differenceive players don't have
any any way to to contact you. You're already saying
you gotta hit with your shoulder in between these certain areas.
Now you're saying if your head gets in any way

(29:02):
in there, Uh, the NZA penalty offensive guys. As a
running back, if I lower my head, I'm getting called
for a penalty. Well for me, how am I going
to be the aggressor? Um, I've been taught as a
kid to run behind my shoulder pads. Well, if you
notice my my head is connected to my shoulders, so

(29:23):
my helmet is gonna be in the way. And so
when I'm running what they call flatback, it's a problem
because if I contact you, you know, with the helmet first,
then I'm getting the penalty. And I think that's that's
a huge problem that the NFL are gonna have to
they're gonna have to deal with, especially uh, in the

(29:46):
scenario where you know, some of these penalties made influence
or impact the outcome of a football game. That's the
last thing the NFL wants to have happened. But I
promise you that's one of the first things they're gonna get. Uh,
if they can tinue with this rule. I like the
fact that they're reaffessing everything. I think this is one
of those rules where they may need to kind of

(30:08):
pull back, uh and find a better way to uh
legis legislate those hits out of the game. So how
do they do it? What is there any way you
can think of that that that makes it better. I
think what they what they're already doing, is making it better.
I think they already have they rule, a spearing rule.

(30:29):
It's already in place. What you do is you put
an emphasis on spearing and then and you keep going.
It's already there, It's in the books. It's a it's
a it's a h a penalty that as a football
player we all know of. UH. So I don't think
that you need to institute a new rule to try

(30:51):
to deal with that issue. It's already on the books.
There's already something maybe the point of emphasis and go forward.
Drum bettis joining as in the Doug Outlive show Fox
Sports Radio, big Ben's new offensive coordinators, his former quarterback coach,
before he sustained a little mild concussion, said he's having
the best camp he's ever had. And look, at this

(31:11):
point is his career doesn't have to go every day.
He's going one day on half day than than taking
a day off. What's your sense of how much big
Ben has left in the tank. You know, I think
Ben is I think, you know, he has four years
where he can play at a at a all pro level.
I think after that, I think the body starts to

(31:33):
fail a little bit. So I think, you know, he's
under contract I believe for two more, but I believe
he's got four big years uh left at him physically
before all those hits start to take to take a total.
So I would think that, uh, he's gonna be you know,
really good for the next couple of years. The problem is, uh,

(31:57):
you know, how how long is the window with with
the other players that that are surrounded um? Uh trying
to be yet? I mean, yeah, it's give me Today's Today,
Striker Orthopedics will announce the third and final winners of
Strikers Get on the Bus contest, created to encourage people
living with joint pain to learn about treatment options and

(32:19):
take their first steps to a healthy lifestyle. Jerome Bettis
will welcome the winner UM on board to Striker's Bus.
Now are you giving out the winner? How do we
know who the winner of this is? So the winner
was already uh pinked through the uh through the online
UM applications yeah, of the of the contest and we

(32:44):
just we just dropped the the person's uh that one
dropped them off at their house. It was an incredible
uh event. We took them to the doctor's office. Myself,
Fred Funk was in the car and the home. The
contest was to people know that you don't have to
live with joint pain. You know, so many of us

(33:07):
we think that's part of the deal. We're getting older,
we gotta deal with this pain. But you don't have to.
And and the key is to get with your doctor,
develop a game, game plans, figure out what it is
you need to do, uh physically, and there are options
available to you. And I just think people just don't
know that, and they're willing to live with the pain.

(33:28):
They don't have to. Great stuff, drum Best, the Hall
of Famer, The Pittsburgh Dealer, l A. Ram Notre Dame legend.
By the way, Irish taking on Michigan. You going week one.

Kirk Ferren's head coach to Iowa joins us. Next hour,
Daniel Jeremiah Third hour of the show. Let's get the
game time. This is game time side on the Doug
Gottlieb Show. Isaac long crom was the game today, Doug.

(35:00):
First of all, I was able to find out some
more information about d J. Moore's arrest and the car
he was driving was a seventeen white Mercedes. He was
going one thirteen and sixty zone and other detail I
can add. He explained going that fast to two fifty
two in the morning by saying he just wanted to
go home. Don't we all all right? What's our games?

(35:23):
In their almost The expectation is Doug the rookie quarterbacks
Sam darn Itpen will be the Jets opening day starter,
had to vets, Teddy Bridgewater and Josh McCown. The New
York Daily News reports at least two teams have expressed
interest in trading for Bridgewater after his performance in the
first two preseason games. What are the chances Bridgewater starts

(35:44):
for a team other than the Jets this season? I'd
say eight percent chance he starts for a team. Look,
I think they're gonna move him, use him as an asset,
especially since they're all in Undonald. But the question is
do they wait how how much patience do they have
to wait for somebody else's quarter back to go down
or to perform poorly? Talking to you, Jackson Miller's forums
performed poorly or maybe Denver. I wouldn't be surprised if

(36:08):
a team like l A the Chargers make them make
some sort of offer, probably not the second round pick
they desire, maybe a third or fourth round pick. The
idea is when the Chargers take the tires in Lamar
Jackson and Sam Donald and some of the other quarterbacks
that they really like, because they need to get uh
an air apparent in there at some point for Philip
Rivers Uh and tannyer Bridge watch the guy could be

(36:30):
a starting quarterback, whereas right now the deal with Geno Smith,
who's better than people think but not really good enough,
and card L. Jones, who has some talent but hasn't
been able to put on display yet in the NFL.
So I think you'll be traded. I just I think
the Jets had the fortitude to hold out and wait
for the right moment, and that was sent him to
a team where he'd start. But I don't know if

(36:51):
that's the case. Speaking of quarterbacks, one of the ongoing
topics of conversation in the league the contract situation of
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. He told Wisconsin radio
station Today, quote, I don't think they would want to
nickel and dime me. And I'm not trying to screw them, unquote.
What are the chances Rogers gets a new contract that
makes him the highest paid quarterback in the league for

(37:13):
reference and guaranteed money that spot currently occupied by Matt
Ryan at a hundred million dollars. Oh, I think that's
uh chance he's gonna get more money. I think the
question is they don't want to nickel and dime him,
but how do they make the dollars work out? And
I would guess that some of this Khalil mack trades
out there and you know he's right now they're the

(37:34):
favorite for him to play there in October, is how
do they work out his contract and the possibility of
getting Khalil mc anew contract if they were trade for him.
And that's the trying to have that that flexibility within
your salary cap is key. And so there's gonna be
some creativity along the way onto baseball. And we discussed
earlier the Washington Nationals unloading Daniel Murphy and Matt Adams

(37:58):
giving up on the season. Essentially. Bryce Harper was also
placed on waivers, but the Nationals could not work out
a deal with the team that claimed him. What are
the chances Bryce Harper leaves in free agency now that
he knows the Nationals considered trading him? Um, what are

(38:18):
the what are the chances that Bryce Harper leaves? Oh,
it's he's nent. He's gone, and they're they're they're hitting
complete reset. And I don't think I think they'll make
him an offer, but they'll do with what what St.
Louis did with Pooholes to make him a reasonable offer
two hundred million dollars long term deal, knowing that he's
gonna want more and he'll turn it down. So we've

(38:39):
had now and finally, let's get your thoughts on the
Boston Red Sox. They currently have the best record in
baseball fifty games above five hundred, at eight and thirty eight.
What are the chances the Red Sox go on to
win the World Series? Pretty good? It? I mean, um,

(39:01):
kimbero in the back end and then three he saw
young Award winners in the front end. I don't think
this is a fluke. You know, I know they lost
a couple in a row this week. Boy, I would
be really surprised because of their pitching. Now, look, Houston
has has on paper as great starting pitching. Obviously they
have been playing as well as of late. Getting through

(39:22):
that American League is tough, but they had the starting
pitching in the closers to to do it, as well
as an incredible lineup. I'm gonna say this is like
a sixty chance they win the World Series, and some
people say, well that's listen, there's a the best team
doesn't always win, especially in baseball. There's a randomness to

(39:42):
to how it how it actually works. This is game
time on the Duck Gottli Show. Have you guys ever
seen the Luke Aikin's video? Do you guys know who
he is? He's he jumped out of a plane at
twenty five feet with no parachute and and in the net,
Like can you imagine? Then? Uh? I mean I actually

(40:09):
think and look he had would you have? As he
has these three spotters around you, and uh, they get
him perfectly positioned so that he lands in a net.
And I believe his wife and kids were actually there
either to see him set the world record or to
see him die. But it's pretty amazing. Kirk Ferren's gonna
join us up coming next. His thoughts on the Hot guys,

(40:31):
and does he have the best quarterback in the Big Ten?

(40:53):
We are weak zero wig zero in college football. Man,
that's a weird place to be, isn't it? Right? Like
does this week count? Of course it counts, of course
it counts. But the week zero thing. Hey, it's like
a soft launch of a restaurant, right, have the friends

(41:14):
and family in and when you turn on your TV Thursday,
be like, Wow, football is back, Yes, it is back. Um.
I saw this piece and we we we referenced it
a little bit a little bit yesterday where they went
in and they they they asked coaches and candid coaches,

(41:35):
most overrated and underrated coaches. They asked a bunch of
other stuff about it about college football as well. And
you know, I think it's probably the years and the
tenure and the money, which I actually we've we've explained
before with Kirk Ferrens. The idea is like, look when
you when you give a guy who you believe in,

(41:56):
who's been there and spent so much of his professional
life and raises is in the area and through the school,
like you know what you're gonna get. And the idea
behind it is, Hey, you don't have to cut corners,
you don't have to take chances, you don't have to
take kids to which you're like, well, you know if
I take this kid, and I take a couple of
kids here, and I do a little business here that
I might not be doing well, then I can get

(42:18):
to that next contract. And the idea is I always
said like, look, we'd like, hey, you run a program.
We like that, You're you're competitive most every year and
every couple of years you got a chance to win
the Big ten West. You're our guy. But what's it
was surprising to me We had James Franklin on yesterday.
Kirk Farrens is one of those coaches listed, and I wonder,

(42:39):
I wonder how he feels, how he reacts to that.
So we reached out and Kirk Farrens head coached Iowa,
among other things, we want to talk about kind enough
to spend some time with us and coach, you're really
prideful guy in the way in which you run your program,
we in which your kids purport themselves. Um, what's your
reaction when you read that other coaches around the country
view you as such? How do they view me? Is

(43:00):
that there's a CBS sports dot com poll where it's
got uh unnamed coaches. It's one fifth of the coaches
and you got the third most votes behind James Franklin
and Willie Taggert for overrated coach. Uh, you know, so
be it. I'm not there worried about it right now.
I'm just sworried about our team getting ready for the

(43:21):
two eight team season. That's That's really all I really
care about. And you know, however people perceive us at
that's up to them certainly. How how good is your team?
Like listen, coaches seem to know when they you know,
between spring and early fall, and I know you haven't
seen another live opponent. Um, how would how would you

(43:41):
how would you characterize your team and how it feels
around around the University of Iowa. Yeah, you know you're
talking to me on a bad day. You know, we
didn't have a great morning this morning, so uh and
I just just got done watching that videotape and uh,
not feeling great about it. But overall, I think I
think we uh, you know, have a good group of
guys here and a couple of things that they've worked

(44:02):
really hard since January, and they've got a good attitude.
And we don't have a large senior class, but their
quality senior class, they have really been invested showing us
good leadership. And then uh, you know, the fact that
we don't have a large senior class, it's really important
that we have an under class been doing a good
job too, and I think we've got a lot of them.
So I like the way the team has been working.

(44:23):
Uh today we you know, one that they didn't work hard.
We just made some mistakes that are gonna certainly cost
us if we do it in a ball game. But yeah,
like I like what the direct direction we're going. And really,
quite frankly, Doug, it's it's uh, you know, pretty much
since two thousand one, with the exception of a couple
of years, as we said here at the end of August,
I felt like we've had a chance to have a
good football team. And uh then as you know, you know,

(44:46):
being an athlete, you know, it just kind of depends
on how we handle all the challenges that are going
to come up during the course of the twelve weeks season. So, uh,
injuries you can't do anything about. But the other things,
Uh that that's really the biggest challenge, Just the fact
that you know, we need to be smart. We need
to really play smart and play hungry, play aggressive, and
and uh, you know, just just try to improve on

(45:08):
a daily basis. That's really what it gets down to.
And if we do that, we'll have a chance to
be you know, the competitive football team. Sorry coming sorry,
sorry I got you coming off a bad day at
at practice. I do want to ask you about Nate
Nate Stanley. He was so good against Ohio State and
then struggled so mightily against Wisconsin, obviously being a Wisconsin kid,
how do you how does he take that next step

(45:29):
to where what he's able to do against Ohio State
he's able to do more often and he doesn't have
he doesn't have those games in which he started. Everyone
I've talked to that covers the big tense, like, look,
that kid's probably the best quarterback in the Big Ten.
When things are right. How do you get him to
play second half of that game against Ohio State? He
was amazing? How do you get him to that level
more consistently? Yeah, I think it really it's a reflection

(45:50):
of our team and that that's who we were last year.
We we didn't play consistently enough. At times, we looked
really good. Obviously the how State game was a highlight
for us, but um, we have the consistency you have
to have if you're going to be a championship level team,
and um, you know, a couple of games we we
just didn't play well enough, and certainly of the Wisconsin
game that's the case. But you know, you didn't have

(46:10):
a lot of help. We we were actually ran the
ball decently, but we we really did nothing in the
passing game. Guys getting open, dropping balls and we had
a chance to complete them. And we had a game
like that the 'r prior against Penn State, and uh,
you know, it was kind of the same deal where
we just you know, you missed a couple of third downs,
you missed a couple of makeable plays, and next thing

(46:31):
you know, it starts going downhill pretty quick. And that
that can happen against good teams like Penn State two
years ago, Wisconsin last year. So um, I think really
that that has represented our our bar challenges year is
to to not only play well uh you know here
and there, but we gotta try to play well uh
on on a consistent basis. And you know, we did
a good job of that on fifteen. And you know

(46:53):
it's kind of a week by week thing, but we
just kept building some momentum and uh this this past
year that wasn't the case in all cases, as at
least you you lose a hundred and twenty two combined
starts at linebacker and you know, people talk about, you know, upfront,
your defensive ens fen is uh. You know, he's got
a chance to be highly drafted and obviously the first

(47:13):
team All Big ten guy. You've always been, you know,
defensive backfield. You put guys in the NFL. But a
hundred twenty two starts combined the three linebackers you lose.
How do you replace that? It's kind of interesting. We
did the same thing in thirteen. We had James Morris
who played four years for US at middle linebacker. Uh.
And then you know, I had a couple a couple
of years in the NFL, Christian Kirksey, who has done

(47:34):
a really nice job in Cleveland, and then Anti Hitchins,
who just signed a big contract in Kansas City. That
those four guys played or three guys played about as
well as you could ask any group to play in
thirteen and UH the next year, you know, it wasn't
quite the same, and then fifteen we played pretty well. Uh,
And I think I think probably the differences. We're a
little bit better upfront, maybe in terms of returners this year.

(47:56):
So we've got a guy in Monty Jones who's a junior,
been a really good special teams player for US. UH.
He clearly is our middle linebacker. And then we're still
kind of toying around. We made toy around in September
a little bit with the rest of the guys. We
got three or four guys in contention for the other
two spots. And I'll even flashback to two thousand and
eight where Pat Anger, who end up being one of

(48:16):
our best players and outstanding captain for US, played for
the Colts. Uh. He didn't win his job until probably
about the fourth week. I guess it would have been
an oh eight, so I could I could foresee that
kind of thing. You know. I think we'll know more
once we start playing games. Your year at Iowa and
one more win, you're gonna pass Hayden Fry your mentor
what will that moment mean to you personally? Oh yeah,

(48:40):
I've been joking, but I do feel this way. I
wish I wish all that had happened. I think about
all the games that we've lost, it maybe could have won. Uh,
this would all be behind us and it wouldn't be
a topic. But you know that the bigger picture is
really to me, it's it's I've when I came here
in one I came here after being a g A
at the University of Pittsburgh. I had no idea what
I was walking and into. I didn't know much about

(49:01):
Iowa at all, let alone I couldn't tell you how
to get there from Pittsburgh. So uh, a little that
I ever imagined, you know, being somewhere nine years and Um.
The bottom line is it's kind of ironic with the
Pittsburgh connection. I think, you know, the University of i
was a little bit like the Pittsburgh Steelers. They don't Uh,
there is consistency here. We've had two head coaches now
in thirty nine years. We've had three athletic directors since

(49:23):
nineteen seventy, so there's a real consistency and the way
we do things. The leadership base is something I appreciate
and um, you know the comment in area when it
was in the eighties war now, Uh, the quality of
the people here that the players that we've been able
to work with and the coaches I've been able to
work with both as an assistant for Coach Ryan now
being back here nineteen years, it's it's been really consistent.

(49:44):
So I've enjoyed the heck out of be in here
and hopefully we've got a few more years left left
in us Kirk parents head coach that Iowa joining us
in the Doug Gotli Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
There's obviously some other stories in the Big Ten, and
a lot of it has to do with how you
coach players as well as how you manage your program.
How has it changed or has it changed during your

(50:06):
time of nearly thirty years at IOWA in terms of
how you coach, how you motivate, and how you allow
your coaches to coach and motivate the players. You know,
I got asked, uh in the summertime, and I'm not
big on looking back at least, you know, not not
this time year. We're really focused on this year. But uh,
you know, I just asked about what, you know, what
you the proudest about over the nineteen years, and I think,

(50:30):
I don't know if I'm proud of that. I guess
i am. But to me, the biggest thing I think,
I think if you asked players from the early two
thousands or two years ago, I think they say there's
a consistency in the way we've done things. And I
really don't believe players have changed a whole lot. I
really don't believe that the recruiting world has certainly changed. Uh.
And then you know the distractions that are available to players.

(50:53):
Obviously that's changed a little bit too, But you know,
distractions are hardly anything new. Um. You know, been some
party played on the Ardham team where they had a
handful of guys playing pro football on Sundays and it
probably cost him a nondefeated season. Whatever you're that was. So,
I mean there's always been temptations for guys to to
you know, get distracted by things. So social media certainly

(51:13):
changed the world, not just athletics and what have you.
But you know, you deal with those things and just
keep keeping moving forward. But I think our approach has
been pretty consistent. We expect our guys to work hard.
We're gonna work hard, and hopefully we're doing it in
a smart way. And you know, it's uh, you know,
the world we're living and certainly has changed, and uh,
you know, somebody hiccuffs now it's it's national news, you know.

(51:34):
So it's just that's that's part of the deal. Um. Look,
obviously play you and I as well, but the sy
Hawk game is one that's almost always wild. I mean,
and looked and they've Matt Campbell's done a nice job
there and and garnered a lot of attention. Two people
outside of the state of Iowa, and they say, well, Iowa, iway,
stay Like, what's that game like to be a part of?

(51:56):
From from the sidelines as long as you've been a
part of it. I don't mean this for disrespectful way,
but yeah, really, I think to your point, it's hard
for anybody outside the state to appreciate and probably the
same way with Oklahoma, Oklahoma state. You know, it's just
h it is an important game and it's unique and
that it's two conferences, major conferences represented. But I learned
that nineteen eighty one I kind of felt the same way. Okay,

(52:18):
we're playing Iva State, no big deal, and we went
up teams and got got spanked, and we had a
good football team. We were an actually ranked team that year.
And uh so, you know, my memories go back to
nineteen eighty one, just how intense the game can be,
how big the rivalry is, and uh me personally, I think,
you know, there's a period there where they didn't play
the game, and then the state legislator got in, legislature

(52:39):
got involved, and uh you know has has kind of
made a rule or a law that we're going to play.
But it's great for our entire state. It's it's a big,
big deal in our state, and it's talked about and
uh you know, they've done a great job up there
building their program, and you know, we're we're open at
uh you know, the series will continue and it's it's uh,
you know, I think last year was an overtime game,
so it's really kind of represent Yeah, it's and it's

(53:02):
gonna be crazy for you guys. You got Iowa state,
after Northern Illinois, Iowa State, Northern Iowa, and then Wisconsin
back to back to back weeks, no weeks off. And
of course we know about the rivalry with the Badgers
plus what they did you last year in Madison, and
both of both are both of you guys are thought
to have a chance to win the to win the
Big Ten West Coach, congrats on yet another year. Can't

(53:23):
wait to talk with you after you pass your mentor
as the all time winning is coach. And we appreciate
you joining us on Fox Sports Radio. Appreciate, appreciate your show.

(54:06):
the final wild card spot. Matt Carpenter is on fire
and guess who's bagging in town? Big Matt Adams come
strolling back in. Well, ask their intern manager Mike's uh
slit um? How how how he's engineered this turnaround? That's
upcoming next. But first you know, using true car, you

into a dealership and hold on, I gotta go back
to my sales manager, right, or just not having the
knowledge of what's the right price to pay for this car?

(55:11):
The true price, quite frankly, is the easiest and smartest
way to do it. You know other people paid for
the exact car you want, same accessories, and you walk in.
True Car dealer knows this, so they set their true
price competitively. Doesn't have the haggling, doesn't have the back

Gotlive Show, Fox Sports Radio Baseball, is this weird game? Man?

(56:16):
I mean, obviously having the second wild card spot changes
things completely around, right, Um, but the cards were dead
and weren't the cards dead and buried? Wasn't this like
a right? Didn't that? Didn't that happen? That was this year?
Wasn't it? And then I guess it didn't happen. That's
that's kind of the best way. Um out tonight at

(56:37):
Chevage Ravine where the Dodgers cannot close out a game. Uh,
they're looking up not only in the nl WES standings,
but they're looking up in the wild card standings. At
the St. Louis Cardinals, who uh to home runs off
of Kenley Jansen. That's the first time he's given up
two home runs in an inning since two thousand. That's
a wow. That's a wow. Um, they won three or four,

(57:01):
but you go back and they had a windstreak. What
was it that they won? Uh, it was like eight
in a row, Ryan eight in a row. As they won,
I think it's like eleven now the last thirteen games
that's what's happened with the cards. And I guess you
could give credit to the players or you could give
credit to the managerial change. Is Mike slip with us?

(57:23):
Is he joining us? All right? Cool? Mike schl Mike,
how do I say? I want to say, I'm like
somewhere between Mike Schmidt and Schlitz and it's Mike Shield
joins us on the Doug Golif Show. Mike, I apologize
to you, my I get caught up in an old
Schlitz reference. Anyway, Like, how much credit should we do?
Would you like us to give you for this massive

(57:46):
turnaround in St. Louis? Well, dog played to be with you,
and I would say zero credit for that, the turnaround,
the sacking place and the way the guys are playing.
I mean, I don't throw a fish and don't hit
a ball. I don't catch the ball. Um clearly don't
run the basis. So um, they're the ones doing the work,
and they're the ones out there competing, and they're the
ones that are that are bringing home the games. All

(58:07):
right For a guy who's been in minor league baseball
as as a manager to be managing not just the St.
Louis Cardinals, one of the iconic franchises in the sport.
But also like last night, to win a game in
the way in which you won a game at Chevezzer
Vine at Dodger Stadium of Kenley Jansen, what's that feeling like?

(58:29):
It's an amazing blessing. It's uh, it's really surreal for sure,
you know, it's uh beyond my personal lattest dreams and
again just uh couldn't be more more um humble about
you know, being a part of it and just appreciating
it and uh aboll being with the same wis Cardinals.

(58:49):
Are we allowed to say that that Matt's coming back
to the Cardinals? Are I mean, I don't know. I
know it's been reported as a trade, but I don't
know the legality of let's just let's just do it
this way. There are reports that have mer Cardinal is
coming back to the Cardinals. UM, I know you've heard
those reports without naming names on those reports. What's your
reaction to those alleged reports? Well, I think we can

(59:11):
make it official. Matt Adams will be back with us
and UM coming home and UM had mad as a
rookie UM in Johnson City, Tennessee in two thousand nine,
and um, and thrilled to having back with the Cardinals,
and I know our fans in our clubhouses chickle having back.
What what what are the conversation has been like with
the guys in the front office in terms of, hey, Mike,

(59:33):
what do you need here to make this final final push?
How much have they involved you in this final decision making?
You know, John Maslak, our president of baseball operations, in
Mike girls original manager, We've always been in good communication
and you know, they clearly have their jobs to do
and they they're they're good to get feedback and we

(59:54):
have communication about what that looks like. But you know,
ultimately they've they've done this and done it well for
fear to time. I'm I trust what they think and do.
And um, you know they've done a great job of
restructuring our bullpen and making some moves. And then you know,
now adding Matt Adams is uh, you know, a real
threat either in the line up or off the bench
from the left. Stid is uh is a great addition.

(01:00:16):
What what's that? What's that conversation like when John mos
Look said that you're going to be the interim guy.
When when when Mike was let go, I mean you
add to this the major league staff about a year ago.
What's that conversation like for you? It's a really bitter
sweet you know what I mean. Well, Mike put me
on the staff and and it's always been, um, really

(01:00:38):
good to me, and UM, you know, he's he's provided
opportunity for me and and you know, really did a
nice job for a number of years since organization won
a lot of games and win the postseason, and um,
you know, the runt off aside the change to be made.
So you know, initially it was it was a disappointment
because you know, you're on the staff and you feel

(01:00:59):
like you let the person down that you're you know,
you're working for. And UM, but then they you know,
they could provide an opportunity for me that UM was
was appreciated. They consider that, and you know, I was
excited to to do the best I can for him,
like any job I've ever had in this organization. And UM,
so it's again very humble. You're you know, when we're

(01:01:21):
in that Skipper's office. Never been to most Major League
Baseball locker rooms. They have that kind of Skipper's office
in there. Does it feel does it does it feel
like yours? I mean, can't? I just I wonder what that.
I'll give you the example. I never made it to
the NBA, but I remember being on a summer league
team with the Lakers and you come in and you
want to say, all right, I'm gonna be balanced, I'm
not gonna make this team, and he keep walking past

(01:01:42):
the signing there's a picture of Kareem and a picture
of Magic and a picture and you're like, all right,
that's fine, that's not gonna be me. And then you're
in there a couple of weeks you're like, you know
what I could? I could do this. And then I
remember at the very end of summer league like, uh,
Mitch cup Checks like, hey man, thanks so much. We're
not gonna keep you. We're not gonna bring your vet camp.
And I was. I was crest fallen. But I think
it was more crestfallen because I I allowed myself for

(01:02:04):
a second to feel like it was real and I
was gonna stay where are you in that? In? Uh?
In that progress? Well, I can relate to what you're saying, Doug.
You know you're at home you know, you go in
and in the opposite home and you know clearly it's uh,
you know, I'm just using it right now. And and
but you know you've got you got pictures of Fred

(01:02:25):
Shane East and and uh, Whitey Herzog and Sony LaRussa
um hall of fame managers. And you know we're here
in Dodger Stadium and in the manager's office you have
all Hall of Fame managers. So you added that list
I just mentioned, and you had or A Weaver and
Parky Anderson and Tommy Losorda, and you know, let's goes

(01:02:48):
on and on, all the great managers. And you know,
of course here was the story Ballpark. You know, you're
sitting in office where a lot of great managers have
been and you know, so it's again it's surreal, and uh,
you're appreciative of it. And you know, ultimately, just do
your best every day to prepare the guys and and
trust what you do and and uh, and you know

(01:03:10):
it just goes to you know, still the game of baseball,
you know, and what happens to beyond today. I you know,
I got no control of but I can sure give
us our best today. Mike um uh, Matt Carpenter. He
obviously strung until last night. Struck a little bit here
in August, but in July, and I mean the turnaround
and on based percentage of the numbers since the All
Star Break, I mean July, he was. He was amazing

(01:03:31):
as a guy who you know obviously you mentioned Johnson
City and helping and and managing clubs in the in
the Cardinals farm system. What you you know, his background,
you know all the things he does to a baseball
What's changed, What's what's he fixed since the All Star Break?
You know, I don't think he's changed a whole lot, Doug.
You know, I've known this guy for a long period
of time. Ill utmost respect of Matt and his work

(01:03:54):
ethic in the road He's taken to get where he
is and I've been able to see it, um, you
know for a fair amount of time. Now, I talk
about a guy the fifth year senior signed out of
CCU and you know, comes into a minor league system.
You know, knows he's got to earn his way the
whole way, and you know, any hiccup and he's um.
You know, he might be on the outside of looking
in and you know, he just got after it. And

(01:04:17):
I remember going to his first big league camp and
I believe that was two thousand and ten and seeing
him and you know, this guy was I mean super hungry,
working there really early, staying late the whole day, taking
advantage of opportunity. And you know, as he breaks in
the big leagues, and you know, you look at this guy,
he's continues to evolve and and his game and he's

(01:04:39):
working on his game, looking to be more consistent. Hitter
was gonna drive the ball, and mean every year he's
trying to add something to his game. And you know,
he's played at a league level for for a while now,
in an All Star and um, you know, been an
MVP consideration the pass, so you know, him doing what
he's doing is not a big surprise really, and it's Alred.
The bigger surprise was you know, he just you know,
struggled a little bit early. And I say struggling really

(01:05:00):
that's not even accurate because if you look at some
of the metrics he was, you know, he's having a
lot of tough luck and this game can be frustrating.
He's putting good swings in the ball and just wasn't
getting the results, and so I don't really changing anything.
You just continue to get back to um what he
was doing and believing himself. And and then his talent
came out. Mike Shield, who's the inner manager for the

(01:05:20):
red hot St. Louis Cardinals, joining us in the Doug
Gotlip Show here on Fox Sports. Ready. You you mentioned
in harken back to all those days in the minor leagues.
All right, give me your best clean it's gotta be clean,
relatively clean minor league story. Go oh man, that's too hard.
And there's so many um they're all mostly clean too,
by the way, but yeah, we're talking last night, and

(01:05:41):
you know there's always, um something you see that you've
never seen before in the game and put it in
one uh one. Story's kind of kind of difficult, but
great opportunity. And for this, you know, years I was
in the minor leagues and managing and people that came
across with and you know, not really a story, but
one thing you appreciated just a level of commitment these

(01:06:01):
players have to their craft and the sacrifice that they
made because you know, they're clearly not doing it for
money there and and um, you know, it's a it's
a growing long road, you know, going through those monor
league cities and travel and and uh so, don't begrudge
anybody that makes the big leagues in in the fruit
of their labor. All Right, we'll mark us down. You
did not give us a good minor league story. I
did not. I did not, But you feel abuster does

(01:06:25):
a little bit. That's okay. By the way, once you
become skipper. And I know you don't see Kershaw on
this trip, but do you guys have the Kershaw Book?
Like where's the secret Cardinals how to get to Kershaw
in the Seventh Inning book? Do you now have the
keys to that? That that that you have the secret
codes the launch codes to that. Yeah, I mean it's
you know, it's organizational property. Yeah, you know, we you know,

(01:06:47):
we keep it with We're pretty we're pretty uh inclusive
here within the organization. And congrats on the win at Chevezravine.
I'm sure that one felt good watching two balls go
out of the yard off Kenley Jansen. I enjoyed the
victory lap. We'll see you at tonight and thanks so
much for win us. Thanks, I appreciate you. All Right,
that's Mark Shield, who of course, longtime minor league skipper,
interim manager, And I mean you think about it. At

(01:07:09):
at their bottom, at their bottom, they were a five
hundred team. Right, they're fifty one and fifty one, and
you look up now and there's sixty nine and fifty seven.
Of course they got the Dodgers, then they got the Rockies. Uh.
They do have another trip to the Nationals coming up
with the Nationals are selling off their pieces. They end

(01:07:30):
off the season with the Cubs. But for the most part,
after this road swing, it's a schedule to which you
can say, you know, they they got a chance, they
got a chance. Uh, they got a legit chance. So
it's gonna be interesting. Um, we've all had a bad
day on the golf course. Sadly, it's not always easy
to find a fixed for your golf game. But it
is easy to find a fixure you check engine lighted

(01:07:50):
auto zone. The free auto zone fixed finder tool will
find the likely issue. Save money down, saving your money
down the road getting the zone auto zone, get the
Isaac blow and crown Isaac what you got, gug. The
Washington Nationals today traded infielder Daniel Murphy to the Chicago Cubs.
They also traded infielder Matt Adams to the St. Louis Cardinals.
MLB dot Com reports the Nationals also put Bryce Harper

(01:08:11):
on waivers, but could not reach a deal with the
team that claimed him, which Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo
was asked about a short time ago, Harper and help
us if it all did that? We you have to
you know, you have to get a deal that that
makes sense to trade, you know. One of the elite
players in the game. Former NFL offensive lineman Richie Incognito,

(01:08:33):
was arrested Monday in Scottsdale, Arizona, on charges of disorderly
conduct and making threats. TMZ and Pro Football Talk reported
that Incognito allegedly threatened employees at a funeral home while
making arrangements after the passing of his father over the weekend.
It was revealed today that Carolina Panthers rookie first round
receiver d J. Moore was charged earlier this month with

(01:08:56):
reckless driving for going a hundred and thirteen mile an
hour in a sixty five mile an hour zone at
two fifty two in the morning in his Mercedes. State
trooper H. L. Bautista, who cited more wrote in the incident,
reports simply quote f that car was moving unquote. Panther's

(01:09:16):
head coach Ron Rivera said more quote, he was very remorseful.
We chastised him. Obviously, it's an opportunity for him to
learn that you have a responsibility to the community unquote. Indeed,
we all presumably have a responsibility to the community not
to go one thirteen and a sixty five zone. It's
for the kids. It's for the kids. Remember it's it's

(01:09:40):
it's all for the youth. Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Oh, man,
it's it's all for the kids. That's a pretty cool story,
right when you're a life for minor league manager and
all of a sudden you get to manage the big
club and that's almost like something out a major league.
I don't know, Charlie. I got a guy in there
line about some white walls. I had to get back
to you. Crazy crazy crazy stuff. Uh. Did you guys

(01:10:07):
see this Baker Mayfield underwear endorsement avert advertisement? Did you
see this Ryan Music? I mean, Ryan, would you wear
these pst Oh he's on the phone, Ramos, would you
wear PSD drawers? Have you seen this advertisement? I have not.
But are they Are they shorts? No? There? Underwear? Yeah?
I would wear Are they briefs? Are they boxers? Their

(01:10:29):
boxer briefs? I believe I would wear those. Yes, okay,
but you haven't seen this seen I wear I would
wear boxer briefs. No. No, I don't mean the picture
of the actual underwear. I mean have you have you
seen the the ad? Let me say before I say
yes or no to anything, I have not seen the ads.
So okay, the ad doesn't actually show it just shows
the band to the boxers, but it's Baker Mayfield headband, beard,

(01:10:52):
no shirt, kind of farmer tan um band of underwear.
Then's got some jeans and then what appears to be
Nike Airmax. He's sitting, he's he's standing and leaning on
a rules Royce that have some killer suicide doors. People
who don't know suicide doors. The doors stop that opened

(01:11:14):
the opposite way, and then in front of him as
a Bengal tiger just kind of like laying there at attention,
and I get that everybody's freaking out, like, well, I
hadn't even thrown a touchdown pass yet, He's not even
starting yet. It's like like what are we doing here?
What do we what? What are what exactly are we doing?

(01:11:36):
Why can't be? I look, I don't do I think
Baker Mayfield was good enough to be the number one pick? No,
do I think he's a little cocky short. I will
tell you you better be a little bit cocky if
you're gonna be six ft tall and be a two
time walk on and make it to be in a
Highstrom Trophy winner and then become the number one overall pick. Like,
you better think you're you know what? Doesn't think? Because
everybody else thinks it does? Does? I don't know. I'm

(01:12:03):
just not bothered by it. I don't. I think it's
kind of cool. Somebody says like, hey man, do you
want to sell some underwear? Yeah? You know what? I
really don't want to pose my own wright. No, no, no,
no worry about it. We're just gonna show the underwear
band cool. What do I gotta do? I don't know.
We'll come up with a photo shoot. Here's our idea.
Here's our idea. We're gonna put you in front of
a rules Royce and next to a tiger. And you're like,

(01:12:28):
and what I gotta do? Nothing? Just stand there, we'll
make you look good. Okay, we're gonna give you a
lot of money and we're gonna make you look good.
Like I don't I fail to see the downside of like, well,
it's this is like Johnny Manzel Like no, it's not
like dude, Johnny Manziel was out partying all the time.

(01:12:48):
Have you seen any videos or any anything of of
Baker Mayfield partying? Have we ever seen Baker Mayfield rolling
up a twenty dollar bill walking in the bathroom? We
have we ever seen that? The only thing we have
police video of him was was that two off seasons

(01:13:10):
a girl or one off season ago in Arkansas? Like, look,
the deal is now if he doesn't doesn't have get
away from the cops speed, you don't have sec speed.
That's the one thing. But like it was like public
intox in Arkansas, Like come on, man, really, so I
don't know music? Am I have? I suddenly become like

(01:13:31):
the most liberal guy on earth or something and all
of you guys have become conservative curmudgeons. But I don't.
I kind of think the picture is cool. Do you
think it's cool? Yeah? I mean I I don't. Yeah,
I don't think he's selling underwear. Yeah, I don't think
it's the worst thing in the world. I just think
it's one of those things where it's not a great

(01:13:52):
look for where he's at. Like we don't even know
when he's gonna start, let alone, when he may or
may not actually be a legitimate NFL quarterback. And so
if he can play, sure, it's great and it just
helps add to his moxie and his profile overall. But
it's one of those things where, look, if he goes
out there in his first NFL game and he throws

(01:14:13):
below completion percentage and throws a couple of picks, that
quickly becomes the poster that everyone wants to use against them,
and it could sort of quickly become a snowball effect
of everything you want to do to stack against him. Okay, fine,
but like, look, if you can't play, can't play, he
can't play, can't play. The poster has nothing to do
with whether or not he can play. It's just another

(01:14:34):
one of those things where you're potentially giving more more
material for the quote unquote haters to be pitted against you,
and if it goes bad, it could go bad quickly.
I mean when we talk about confidence with the quarterback.
That confidence can be quickly squashed by how many people
maybe out there rooting against him, especially using a picture

(01:14:58):
like that. But none of that matter. None of that
matters if he can play. But what if he's what
if he's very borderline, because you're making it sound like
he either can play and he'll be great, or he
can't play and it doesn't matter. But what if he's
in the middle and he needs that confidence or he
doesn't he can't handle the pressure of all of these people,

(01:15:20):
Like look like there's no that this is like, I mean,
I don't know how many times you got into this
with other athletes. It's like, well, Aaron Rodgers, will you
know Aaron Rodgers couldn't lead the comeback that uh couldn't
leave to come back that um Tom Brady could against
the Atlanta Falcons, Like okay, well Aaron Rodgers let it
come back against the Dallas Cowboys the week before, right,

(01:15:40):
like he want a Super Bowl? He clearly can play
under pressure. It's like, well, oh, now I'm in Atlanta,
now I'm down twenty three, Now I can't come back.
Or his defense was just a total joke disaster, So
I just look, I I don't know. If somebody tells you, hey,
do do you want to do? You want to do
a uh? Your agent calls you, do you want to
do an under under uh? Underwear? Ad? You know I

(01:16:03):
won't pose in my underwear. I just don't think that's
a good thing. Like no, no, no, you just wear
jeans and no shirt and underwear like okay, So they're
gonna do a photo shoot. Cool, I'm gonna pay you
X fine. Cool. And by the way, you get a
percentage in the back end because they're gonna sell ones
with your number on it. No one on earth says
no to that. No one. We gotta get over ourselves.

(01:16:30):
If you can't play, can't play the underwear. It's not
gonna be the reason he can't play. Rob Ryan thinks
Lamar Jackson could be the next Randall Cunningham. Give you
my thoughts. Next, be sure to catch live editions of
The Doug Dot Leap Show week days at noon Eastern
three pm Pacific. We can be confusing, well not anymore.
With True Price from True Car. Now you can know
the exact price you'll pay for your next car. So

(01:16:51):
visit True Car and enjoy more confident car buying experience.
What up Doug got Lip Show? Fox Sports Radio. David
Griffin tweets the show at god Lee shows the Twitter hand.
My only problem with this Baker Mayfield, I know where
shoot is. Why is he next to a Bengal Tiger
but he play plays for the Browns Again. I think

(01:17:15):
we're looking away too much in this deal. I just do.
I mean you could if you want to spend it,
you go like see that he was walking the banger
teas completely in control of the Bengal, completely in control
of the Bengal. I don't know every day. This time
we played for you a previous show on Fox Sports one,
Fox Sports Radio. We call it The Fox Say. This

(01:17:39):
was Rob Ryan, who was on Undisputed earlier today. He
was talking about Lamar Jackson's future with the Ravens. Do
you think that Lamar will ever take Flacco's job eventually? Yes?
I do. I think I think Lamar Jackson is uh,
He's he's gonna be. He's Randall Cunningham. If you remember
Randall Cunningham's history, he came into you know he's gonna

(01:17:59):
have some and plays for him, and Randall came in
on every third down the Dwarski had trot off. Here
comes Cunningham. Probably wasn't the smartest, you know, the smartest
way to do it, but you know, I know my
father wanted to get the best athlete on the field
and he had them. And then after that, then he
takes over and its first down. He's like, wow, it's
not third down, you know. But with this kid, he's

(01:18:21):
gonna have plays. And right now they're not showing any
of that. Wait till they start running his play. It's
kind of like Deshaun Watson. DeShawn Watson got in the
game and all of a sudden, Hey, they're running different
places than never showed in the preseason. And you know,
this kid's got to have a plethora of plays for him, uh,
to get in the game. And in Baltimore's offense needs it, right,

(01:18:42):
they need it. And and this kid, I think he's
gonna be playing week one. I know Flacco will be starting,
but this kid's gonna play week one, and that means
that's trouble for Flacco because this kid's dynamic. This guy's
gonna make plays. Uh. Look, I like Rob Ryan a
lot and obviously is a defense a coordinator. He knows
and maybe has forgotten more about what it's like to

(01:19:03):
prepare for an NFL quarterback than I'll ever know. I
will point out though, that one of the reasons that
the calls for Lamar Jackson to play have gone really
quiet is we've seen all three preseason games, right. We
saw the Hall of Fame game. You're like, well, that
was really early on. And then we saw a week
two game and Joe Flacco looked great, like, well, you know, listen,

(01:19:24):
he might have tried a couple toothing. And then you
saw last night. Look, Booker McFarlane is thank goodness, he
said it. He's like, look, he's just not accurate enough
to be an NFL quarterback. You know. Yeah, by the way,
you don't get more accurate for the most part. You
can prove some fundamentals, but there's just a lack of accuracy.
There a lack of football uh i Q within the pocket,

(01:19:45):
you know. And I agree he's a dynamic athlete. He
might be a little less athletic than I thought he was,
to be completely candid, like, and maybe it's me under
selling just how athletic everybody else is in the NFL.
You know, the expression is you don't get faster. Everybody
else does, But I I don't know. I I think

(01:20:09):
I just I watched it last night at one point
four of eleven. I was like, I think through a
couple of nice passed the night touchdown pass and the
numbers looked a lot better than the performance. I don't
know anybody inside the NFL that I've talked to that
legitimately is like Lamar Jackson can play every down at quarterback.
Do you put them on the field occasionally? Sure, But

(01:20:29):
I think the preseason has been great for Flacco. Yes,
when they drafted it, when they when they draft a
quarterback in the first round, that some people have an
infatuation for a former high Sandra. And by the way, like,
you know what's amazing about it is we all talk
about Heighsman Trophy winners that don't live up to it,

(01:20:49):
or don't live up to the hyper, don't or don't
play as well as professional quarterbacks. How come nobody else
outside of me is mentioning Laar Jackson's Higsman Trophy winner.
I don't think he's a starting quarterback right now. I'll
be intrigued to see what they're able to do with
him as the year goes on. I think you're smart
to draft a guy, use him, but not at quarterback.

(01:21:14):
Doug gotlib show here on Fox Sports Radio, and uh uh,
if there's there's a here's a funny one that as
you're you ever done this before? Um music in that
you drive a car that that it looks like other
people's cars, Like I once had a black autie in
New York, and there's lots of black outis in New York,

(01:21:34):
and I never forget. I got off a train from
work and I was looking at my phone, listen to
headphones and I was jamming out and all of a sudden,
I opened the door and I hop in the car,
and all of a sudden, there's a guy sitting in
my car. And I realized it was somebody else at
the exact same car, like two cars over from my car.
Have you ever done that? No, I've never done that. Yeah.

(01:21:55):
I have a friend of mine, Um the other day
that black suv and wasn't paying attention, bunch of stuff
in their hands, and he hopped into a car, and
uh yeah, he's he kind of freaked out. Um, Daniel
Jeremiah join us next. Al Right, if you missed the
Kirk Ferrens interview. If you missed the Mic uh Shield interview,
that's the inter manager for the St. Louis Cardinals. Download those.

(01:22:18):
But up coming next, we need to think about Andrew
Luck not similar other quarterbacks, similar to Tiger Woods. That's
next in the Doug Gotlip Show. Fox Sports Radio has

(01:22:41):
Radio Coming to here from the city of Los Angeles, California. Man,
we had longest tenure coach in the Big ten, Kirk Ferrens,
Iowa Hawk Eyes. How about the change in that program
in the past couple of years? He mentioned, coupled one
down year or some open up the playbook and now

(01:23:03):
it got a big time quarterback, a a A a
manageable schedule. Right. It's one of the things about college
football and that people aren't talk enough about is and
I look, I wish I was on a college football
show because one of the things I would discuss is
how good is somebody versus how difficult is their schedule.
We do it with are you in the SEC or

(01:23:24):
are you in the A C. But even within the SEC,
or within the Big twelve or within the Big ten,
especially the Big ten. Now the A C, C, the SEC,
the Pack twelve, you don't have even schedules Big twelve.
Some of it can be home versus road, and you know,
you play Oklahoma Texas and and Oklahoma State and back
to back to back games that will kind of beat

(01:23:45):
you up if you're one of the other teams. You'r
Kansas State for example, how the teams are stacked, but
in the other leagues, like you look at Iowa schedule
versus Wisconsin schedule and it's not the same. Now, we've
talked with with Kirk Ferrin's about the psy Hawk game,
which is played at a much higher level then and

(01:24:05):
Matt Campbell's done a tremendous job at Iowa State, tremendous
They hadn't been there long time, only year. But um,
you look at what he's done, and then you look
at the schedule and you're like, Okay, well that's a
that's a more difficult game than normally an Iowa State
game would be. But but here's the these are two

(01:24:26):
teams in the exact same side of the same conference. Right.
Let's let's take Iowa. They play at a conference Northern
Iowa they have to play based upon state legislation, have
to play Iowa State. They play Northern Iowa as well.
And then they get in the Big Ten. And now,

(01:24:46):
of course they play nine Big Ten games. So they
play Wisconsin and they go to Minnesota to Indiana. Maryland
is a crossover game. Indiana on the road is a crossover.
A game at Penn State, Sneaky One is at Purdue
the week after playing at Penn State, Northwestern at home

(01:25:08):
at Illinois, and Nebraska at home. In other words, they're
in the Big Ten. They don't play Michigan, they don't
play Michigan State, they don't play Ohio State. Now the
juxtaposition of that with Wisconsin, Wisconsin has to open up
the Big Ten. Now they play West Kentucky and North
and New Mexico and b y U. And even though

(01:25:30):
b y U is they're not what they used to be,
but they're better than you think. There's no way that
B y U game is gonna be played at the
level of Iowa State Iowa. It's just not but then
Wisconsin has to go to Iowa. They too get Nebraska
at home to Michigan, Illinois at home to Northwestern, Rutgers
at home two Penn State to Purdue to Minnesota. They

(01:25:53):
too don't play is the wis Wisconsin, they don't play
Ohio State, they don't play Michigan State, but they play
Penn State on the road, and they play Michigan on
the road. That's a more difficult schedule. Compare that to Nebraska,
who is in again the exact same division. They're Big
ten schedule. They play at Michigan, at Wisconsin, at Ohio

(01:26:17):
State home to Michigan State at Iowa. So even if
you're just as good as those other teams, the likelihood
is you're gonna lose several of those games playing on
the road, and especially the game's in sequential order. If
you don't get Rutgers and you don't get in Maryland,
especially with all the the topsy charting to turnover and

(01:26:39):
the possibility DJ Durkin doesn't get his job, you're at
a substantial disadvantage if you're in the West anyway. But
our thanks to to Kirk Farrens who he did and
then laugh it off, but the whole idea of most
overrated coaches. What's funny about Kirk Farren says, I don't
remember him being highly rated. I think of it highly respected,

(01:27:00):
Like people like, he's a good coach, They're in a
really good program, they're never gonna beat themselves. The players
get better. I don't know. All right, let's get after
it with with Andrew Luck. Here. Here's Andrew Luck on
how he played, from his own words, how he played
last night. Not very well. Uh, but it was fun.
It was good, good, good chance to be out in
front of the home crowd. We've certainly got a lot

(01:27:22):
of things to work on as a team, and then
asked the best the beority of it. I know, personal truck,
I've got a lot of things to work on. At
the same time we did. We did some good things.
And if we continue to improve every day as a
team and as his individual players will be all right.
We continue to improve every day as a team as
individual players will be all right. He's got to get better.

(01:27:43):
Didn't play good, didn't play well. I didn't wasn't able
to throw many people open, but a lot of them
weren't open. Was under the rest offensive line didn't protect.
What happens is we like to compare. This is what
we do in sports. Right last hour, he played for
your cover. Rob Ryan wanted to compare Randall Cunningham to
Lamar Jackson, and we want to compare, like who's who's

(01:28:08):
the next? Like a Baker Mayfield reminds John Dorsey, who
was in Green Bay, of Brett Farve right, Like yeah, okay,
maybe he's three or four inches smaller and he doesn't
have that, but it's the mentality that's who he reminds
me of. He was in Green Bay when they had
Red five. Reminds me of Red Fire. Guys always try
and find comps, so we try and find a comp

(01:28:29):
for Andrew Luck and I found it for you. It's
not a quarterback though. Here's Tiger Woods at the p
G A championship. To go through what I've gone through,
I didn't also play last year. I mean I didn't
also ever play again. I was hoping to build play
off of my with my kids and my buddies at home.
I wasn't thinking about the tour and now here I'm

(01:28:50):
containing a major championships and I've had a chance to
win a couple of major Championships, the comp to Tiger,
and I know it's on his back, it's his shoulder,
but look, you can't hit a golf ball without putting
incredible amount of torque on your back. You can't throw
a football without your shoulder. Both had operations. Both people

(01:29:11):
thought they wouldn't come back. Hey, maybe you should just hanging.
Maybe won't you won't play anymore? How you look back,
Andrew Luck, we were doing this over the summer, weren't
we Rhyan music where we were talking about he still
hadn't thrown a football, Like, isn't it a problem? When
he hadn't thrown They had him throwing um a different
size football for a period time to have him kind

(01:29:32):
of work up to throw in the Duke. That was
that was less than two months ago, wasn't it somewhere
around that time frame. Yeah, I mean there was an
extended period of time they're leading up to this training camp.
I mean it was even in the beginning of training camp.
Once they started to allow him to throw even the
full size football, they were like, you know, we're gonna

(01:29:52):
do it on limited times, Like we're not just gonna
throw him in there. Let him take full reps. So
even working his way up to throwing a size football,
they still had to implement him back into a full
workout load, let alone whether or not he can actually
play right. And now this is and now he's seeing
real live bullets, uh in preseason football. Um. And he

(01:30:14):
even said afterwards, like the best thing about the whole
day was he got sacked by Terrell Suggs and landed
on his elbow. Was similar to when he initially hurt
his shoulder first time around. And so there was some like, oh,
you know what, I'm going to be okay, I'm going
to make it, and sure enough he did. So. I
think that the whole thing, to me is is amazing

(01:30:35):
in how we lose our minds a little bit now.
They have always been the people that don't think Andrew
Luck is as good as as the hype, right, And
maybe I did a bad job. I get a chance,
I'll wait to co host with Jason Smith on the
Dan Patrick Show. Here's what's amazing about it. Andrew Luck
and r G three are tied at the absolute him, right,

(01:31:00):
They're tied to the hip because of the NFL Draft,
and in that NFL draft, like if you want to
sit there and tell me, okay, man, I really believe
that Andrew Luck has not lived up to the hype.
I would argue, I could argue with you that that
it's really hard with injury and considering how poorly run

(01:31:22):
that franchise was, that you're you're underestimating how important it
is to play for Remember Jim Ursay had had a
problem with addiction where he had to leave the team.
You could no longer run the team. They've fired their
general manager, they fired their coach, and they've had just
a terrible roster. What's amazing about it, though, is um,

(01:31:45):
what were the other options at quarterback? Right? Like, if
Andrew Luck is not as good as advertised, what do
we say about Robert Griffin? Like, well, Robert Griffin hurt
his knee, Okay, Andrew Luck hurt his shoulders? You know, Like,
what what other quarterback prospects were they that you're gonna
Ryan Tannehill was taken eight? Would you rather have Andrew

(01:32:06):
Luck Ryan Danhill? And if you sit there and go, well,
he got the biggest contract in the history of the
league and he hasn't lived up to it. Like, actually
he won thirty three games his first three years. If
you remember the reason they got the number one overall
pick was they got really old and Peyton Manning got hurt,

(01:32:28):
and so the bottom fell out and they got the
number one pick. And he went from the worst team
in the NFL to a playoff team and three years,
three years in, they went to the a f C
Championship game. He threw forty touchdown passes, and he did
so with thirty six year old Reggie Wayne as his
second best wide receiver and uh thirty year old Frank

(01:32:49):
Gore as his running back. We did so if you
do that behind that offensive line, with that coaching staff,
and then you go through two years in which you're
banged up and injured and you still find a way
to throw the ball around the yard like I'm okay
with it. I realized, you know, it's like, it's like

(01:33:10):
we have no perspective on quarterbacks, let alone perspective on
guys that missed this much time. That's what Tigger Woods
offered us is perspective. Hey, in February, he missed the
cutter every era. In August he nearly wins the PGA Championship.
Does that mean that Andrew Luck is going to be
Tigger Woods this past weekend. At the end of the season.

(01:33:31):
I don't think so, because I just don't think he's
got a good enough team around him. But I think
if you watch, if you understand the idea of baby steps,
nobody's freaking out in Indie, especially Andrew Luck especially. We've
all had a bad day in the golf course. Sadly,
it's not always easy to find a fix for your
golf game, but it's easy to find a fix for
your check engine light at auto zone. The Free Auto

you money down the road getting the zone auto Zone
are are the are there the expectations realistic for Andrew
Luck and the Colts this season? Plus, we'll talk about
some of the teams that get discussed the least because
they're not making headlines, ones that can actually, you know,

(01:34:15):
win football games. We'll do so with Darryl Daniel Jeremiah

Let's catch up with DJ Daniel Jeremiah. The podcast is

(01:34:57):
out is uh sorry? Is of the sticks. That's also
the Twitter handle and the Instagram handle as well. You
can see it on NFL Network. You can download it
and he's also an analyst for the l A Chargers
radio broadcast. You know. Jeremiah joins us on the Doug
Gottlieb Show. I want to start with last night. Um,
when I say Andrew Luck, what's the first thing that

(01:35:20):
comes to your mind? It doesn't look the same. Uh.
You know, I hope that we get to see, uh,
the guy that that led that team to the playoffs
several years in a row and had them knocked on
the doorstep. But I don't know that he's I'll see
him right now, and uh, you know, I have to
wait and see if if that ends up being the

(01:35:41):
case that we see the same guy. But I just
you know, I've just watched him throw the ball. I
didn't think the ball had the same kind of life
on it that he used to have, and just didn't
look like he was quite as comfortable. So I don't know,
maybe I'm being too hard on him, but that's not
the that's not the Andrew Luck that I saw previously.
I think that's fair. Like, look, am I wrong? His
first three years were as good as you could have

(01:36:01):
hoped for from a quarterback, right, it was. It's it's
the highest grade I've ever given to a quarterback when
since I started scouting in two thousand three. So his
ability is off the charts. And we saw him carry
a team, you know, as a young player, which is
very rare. But uh, we'll see hopefully, hopefully, uh we
see that guy again. Okay, So when I watched last night,

(01:36:23):
I thought, here's what I thought, here's here's the here's
the non former personnel guy in the front office thoughts.
I was like, I thought Joe Flacco look was the
best quarterback on the field. I think Jacoby Brissett is
exactly what you know. He could be a spot starter
and a pretty good pro. I thought Andrew Luck it
looked like Tiger Woods in February where boy, he was
really really rusty, but he was also hurt by a

(01:36:45):
bad offensive line and guys and nobody was really open. Uh,
nor was he terribly accurate throwing them open. And then
I thought Lamar Jackson looked like the fourth best quarterback
on the field. Am I being too harsh? No? You know, look, Lamar,
they didn't really get him started the right way. And
we talked about this with I talked about this with
Bucky today on the podcast. Was well, they didn't really

(01:37:06):
get him some some easy throws kind of get going
and didn't use a screen game, didn't get him on
the move and just ask him to kind of hang
back there in the pocket. And he's not going to
be a purely accurate quarterback at this point in his
career if you're gonna ask him to do that. And uh,
I thought his eyes dropped a little bit. Even though
the protection wasn't great, I thought he was he just
wasn't real comfortable. And uh So that to me, I

(01:37:29):
think when you play with Joe Flacco and you try
and call at the same place and run the same
offense with Lamar Jackson at this point in his career,
you're not going to be successful. Uh, you gotta script
things a little bit differently for Lamar. So I didn't
think he looked comfortable. I I think you could say
watching that game with with Luck, Rissette, Joe and I
would probably even put r G three, you know, those
all those guys looked more comfortable than what Lamar looked

(01:37:50):
like last night. Do you think he plays quarterback for
the Ravens this season. I've been you know, before we
gets the preseason, Doug, I've been saying, I've been predicted
we would see him at some point time this year.
Maybe it was the middle of the season. Um, And now,
you know, I don't know. I'm not so sure right now.
It's just you haven't seen enough. And I have been
there for practices, but in the preseason, it just he's

(01:38:11):
a long ways away and they're gonna have to really
tailor the offense toward him. And you know, hey, maybe
the best thing about this, this selection of Mark Jackson,
is it it did kind of light of fire energ
Joe Flacco, because that is the best we've seen Joe
Flacco looking quite some time. Tend to tend to agree
with you, Danny, Jeremiah joining us on the Doug out
Lip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Uh, it appears, it

(01:38:32):
appears like it's a formality. Sam Donald is gonna win
this job, right like he But is that is that
the smart play for them? That they got Teddy Bridgewater
who has some value? Um, you have Josh mc cown
who's shown that he can be a little bit better
than you think. And you know, once you start Sam Donald,
you're not gonna bench him. It's bad offensive line, bad
tight endplay, average wide receivers, below average running backs? Is

(01:38:56):
it the right thing to do? I actually got into
an argument, like a serious argument, but a disagreement with
the general manager in the league because we were just
talking about this, and I said, just play him. You know,
he's get it. You guys, get this kid experience. Let
sae him get out there and learn from his mistakes.
In that way, you have him ready to go next
year when you can go get some better pieces around him.

(01:39:17):
He's mentally and physically tough. He'll be able to survive. Um,
he'll be able to survive some rocky moments here, you know,
just just get through it. And then he said no,
he said, look, you can you can brand a kid
with one awful year, um, and uh, I don't know
that I'd want to put that on him. This team
is just not ready for for a young quarterback at
this point in time. So we disagreed, but I I

(01:39:38):
stick to my guns on that one. I think he'll
be fine. There'll be some some highs and lows, but
he's such an even keel kid. I think this experience
will really benefit him going into next year. Do you
think Angel Luck feels good about the experience he had
those couple of years of that terrible ros Well, they
went to the playoffs darned near with the a FC
Championship game with no offensive line. So no offensive line

(01:40:00):
he had he had Reggie went thirty six year old
Reggie Wayne was wide receiver to right likely and then
Andy guy only got worse after that. Well, I do
say I do like this though, because some people on
Twitter were given Donal a hard time for not throwing
the ball down the field, and I'm like, dude, this
is he's playing smart and this is how he's going
to survive This year. They're gonna go four and five wide,

(01:40:23):
They're gonna spread people out. It's gonna be catch rock
and throw from the gun. It's gonna get the ball
out of his hand. It's gonna save him. Um. Speaking
of going empty and trying to find mismatches and short
and underneath stuff, it feels like, with the exception of
Tavan Austin, who the Cowboys are the only people on
earth convinced they can make him into a wide receiver. Um,

(01:40:43):
what do you think what the Cowboys are doing with
no real no real plan for like a number one,
like a go to guy reworking the tight end position.
There's a lot of something there, but outside of Zeke
there seemed to be trying an ensemble cast. Do you
like that? Well, it's gonna just the experiment. I mean,
one thing I won't say, Michael Gallup looks really good,

(01:41:03):
the rookie from Colorado State. He's gonna be a good
player for him. So that was a nice fine for
them in the draft. But I think the formula that
they're gonna use Doug is going to be very much
in nineties formula, in old school formula, and that they're
gonna run the heck out of it. And then defensively,
I think they've got a chance to be a little
bit better than everybody thinks. You know, when you look
at the linebackers that they've put in place there now

(01:41:24):
with Jalen Smith starting to really come around and look
like a little bit like the guy we saw a
Notre Dame. Uh, you got to Marcus Lawrence coming off
the edge. The Woozier is really filling in nicely at corner.
I think this defense with Rod Marinelli calling the shots,
could be actually pretty good, and that's gonna be their formula.
Just try and run the heck out of it, played
good defense and find their way to yeah, shorten the
game and find themselves some low scoring close games and

(01:41:46):
and hope that you know, the good special teams can
can carry them. Um, it's gonna be fascinating to see
you also obviously work and cover the Chargers. You saw
the Seahawks up close and personal. Um. Look, I think
common perception is they lost the legion of boom, they
haven't really fixed the offensive line. But my thought, my
one thought is like, hey, these guys were the ones

(01:42:08):
who drafted the legion of boom, right, So the idea
that those big names are gone doesn't mean there's going
to be that big a fall off. How big a
fall off is there on that defensive side of the football. Well,
there's a lot of names that people just aren't gonna
be familiar with. I do think there's a drop off though,
I mean, especially with your old Thomas not being there.
They've got good players, you know, if you're kind of

(01:42:29):
looking at a pro grading scale, you know they've got
guys that are serviceable, solid starters. You know, that's that's good.
But they had elite playmakers, you know what those other
guys and I don't see those guys currently on this
on this roster. So I think they're gonna be good
on defense and only even gonna be terrible. I think
they're gonna play hard Pete Carroll's teams always do on

(01:42:49):
that side of the ball. I just don't know if
they're get a little difference making plays that we saw,
you know, from the Michael Bennetts to Cliff eight Rolls
as well as that whole secondary. So, uh, that to
me is is definitely to be a step down. And
then offensively, I know they want to be more physical
and uh, I do really like Chris Carson in his game,
but the the offensive line is left handed for sure.

(01:43:09):
On the right side, that gives me a little bit
of pause. Yeah, and Chris Carson does have a tency
to get hurt, as he got hurt last year after
earning the starting spot. Has running back Dania Jeremiah joining
us on the Doug Otlive Show. What about the Chargers,
I've talked him up. They don't have a Hunter Henry,
but they got in a litany of talented wide receivers. Uh.
The offensive line seems to be good enough, and you've
got you're gonna add Forest Lamp at some point soon

(01:43:31):
to give them some depth. Uh, the second year player
who missed his entire rookie season with the knee injury.
What are your thoughts on the Chargers now that you've
seen them play helped preseason games. Well, it's exciting, you know,
I'm doing their games, getting chance to see them up
close there. The personnel is really good. You know, you
can look and try and be a little picky and say, okay,
maybe defensive tackle, you know, getting a little more dynamic

(01:43:54):
player in in that spot. But they've got edge rushers,
the speed they added in the draft. With a chinning
to Wilson, who has been awesome from USC as an
outside linebacker, Kaigier White, who was a safety at West Virginia.
They converted him to a linebackers. They got a lot
faster at linebacker and then Derwin Jane and I'll go
out there to practice to worow. But I heard he's
working with the first team this week, so getting him

(01:44:15):
plugged in, I think it's got a chance to be,
if not the best defense in the NFL at top
five defense, to go along with Philip Rivers and all
they can do in the passing game. I mean, it looks.
It looks good right now. They just meet the can't
affording more injuries, stay healthy, but it's a good looking roster. Um. Okay,
I don't know. Did you see the did you see
the picture of the Baker Mayfield underwear advertisement? I did.

(01:44:37):
I saw two things his today on social media. Saw that,
and I saw his impression to John Dorsey. How I
I that he obviously John Dorsey obviously choose gum with
his mouth open. That was my big takeaway. I don't
think he got the voice down yet. What I like, Look,
i'd love to say I'm bothered, like I'm not, like,

(01:44:58):
do you want to do under under or ad? Yeah?
I just I don't want to pose him on to her. No, no, no,
you have jeans on. We'll put you in a cool pose.
Put you in front of a Rolls Royce with the tiger.
It is a Bengal, he's a brown. I don't know. Um, like, look,
he's gonna get some chops busted in the locker room.
Is this a big deal? I don't think so. You
know the funny thing, some dudes just have a tremendous

(01:45:19):
amount of confidence. I mean, I go back to when
when when Jon Gruden was in the People magazine is
one of the sexiest men alive, and he went out
to practice. He knew everybody was going to rip him,
and he just said, Hey, don't hate on me. It's
just jealous. I'm just sexier than you are. You know,
like you just kind of there's certain guys with a
personality and Baker strikes me with that type of personality

(01:45:40):
that he probably guys will laugh with him, they won't
laugh at it, and they'll kind of just go on.
Stug got the show here on Fox Sports Radio. What
do you think they do at quarterback Cleve? When I think, look,
it's uh, it sounds like it's all in on Tyrod,
But there there is you know, for for he was
won one out of thirty two, expectations are actually pretty high. Uh,

(01:46:02):
they come out the gate and go, you know, one
and three, one and four. Um, you know, obviously celebrate
that first one. It's been a minute. But I do
think it that, uh, this whole it's a red shirt
ear for Baker Mayfield that can disappear real quick. Do
you think Buffalo pulls the trigger and plays the kid.
I think they're going to. I just think he's so
much more talented than everybody else they've got at the position.

(01:46:23):
So you can say, well, I don't know if this
is the best thing for him long term. Same reasons
we talked about with Sam Donald in terms of what's
around him. But man, that's at least with the Jets
at the decision to make the way Teddy's playing with mccount,
there's no decision in Buffalo. He just clearly head and
shoulders better than what they've got. Yeah. Yeah, I'm I'm

(01:46:43):
I'm fascinated by a couple of the teams that people
haven't talked enough about. Dann Jeremiah joining us NFL network.
Move the Sticks is is the podcast? Um, where are
the Niners in their rebuild? I mean, we saw Jimmy
g go five and oh and beat three playoff teams. Granted,
the Rams, uh, we're we're mailing in week seventeen. But

(01:47:03):
but what what are expectations for the Rams? For the
see me for the Niners here week two? With that
crew running things well, I think, look, McGlinchey looks like
a hit so far. You know, I was telling somebody
of the day if you if you want offensive lineman,
go shopping at Notre Dame in the Big ten. Um.
Those those guys have been pretty darn good. So you've
you've got two good tackles there, You've got a really
good young quarterback in Garoppolo, and you've got a great

(01:47:26):
play caller. Now, the question I have is just the playmakers.
You know, it's Marquis good one, gonna gonna continue to
evolve and grow and be that guy. I don't know.
I still think they have work to do at some
of those skill positions. But defensively it's you know, they've
got they've got a pretty good look in front seven
and some talent secondary as well. I mean, this this
could be kind of your sneaky you know win team.

(01:47:48):
I think on the low win you're you're talking about,
I think I predict them to win nine, nine or
ten games, But it wouldn't shock me if they did
better than that. Okay, what about the Miami Dolphins. That's
a tough one. I think their defense is going to
be pretty good. Um All everything I've heard coming out
of there all the way back to the spring was
that Robert Quinn. It just fits beautifully into that scheme.

(01:48:09):
So I think defensively, they're gonna be able to get
after the pass for a little bit, and I've got
some you know, I love Zavian Howard in a secondary. Offensively,
I'm still a little nervous there. So I think if
you if you ask me right now, I think the Jets,
I think first places obviously, the Patriots, fourth places, the Bills,
and I think you're looking at Miami and the Jets
kind of Jocelyn for second place, and that that probably

(01:48:30):
puts you in that nine wins area. If if you
were to play a game on paper or with a
computer and you said, I do you need running back?
How about the guy who led the league in rushing?
Do you need somebody take the top off the defense.
How about the fastest guy in the NFL. You got
a tight end, Travis Kelsey, he's the top five whatever,
and you got Sammy Watkins. So I think they overpaid,

(01:48:51):
but like, look, I get his how why he was acquired.
And then you need somebody who can make all the throws.
They found a guy and red shirted him to make
all the throws. And you need a coach who who
has shown the ability to motivate guys get him to win.
Like Kansas City seems to be a team that you
check every box. But man, I feel like as much

(01:49:12):
as rewards is, they're gonna be those seventy yard touchdown passes,
I do feel like there's gonna be some risk there
in some of those throws. And as we know, turnovers
the biggest determinating and who wins in any sport, especially
the NFL. What are your thoughts on the Kanna City Chiefs.
They will score a bunch of points, and just looking
at it, it's it's just the s s is. They've
got speed, they've got skill, and they've got scheme. Those

(01:49:35):
are three good things. And then, uh, you know you
mentioned on Mahomes they traded in the efficiency of Alex
Smith for the explosiveness of my homes. But with that's
gonna come some turnovers. So I think they're gonna score
a bunch of points, there's gonna be a bunch of yards,
and I think there's gonna be some of those turnovers
they're gonna cost them some games. Um, And then I
just don't know. Defensively, it's just not I don't know,

(01:49:55):
it's not It's not a great group. So that to
me would be a little bit of a concern. Some
of the resources they've taken from that side of the
ball to kind of build up this offense. I definitely
think they have a top five offense in the league,
but I do think the turnovers will get him a
little bit. And I think that defensive personnel is a
little bit worrisome. Do you think that's a reaction to
some of the rule changes and that the league is
going offense as opposed to defense. Yeah, I mean, I

(01:50:18):
I talked to teams around the league that said, the
team that just won the Super Bowl, Mean, did you
watch the Super Bowl? They gave up six hundred yards
and won the game, So you know, and and my argument,
my counter argument to that was yeah, but they ended
up point of the game because Brandon Graham made a
play late in the game. So um, He's still got
to have some playmakers on the defensive side of the ball.
But there's definitely a sense around the league of hey,

(01:50:38):
let's load up on offense and the way the rules are,
the way the games set up right now, Just go out,
score everybody. Daniel Jeremiah, NFL Network l A Chargers Moved
the Sticks as the podcast home on Twitter and on Instagram,
or follow him to San Diego when he drives home
from work. Thanks so much for joining us, TJ. Thanks Buddy,
the one only Daniel Jeremiah joining us weekly here on
the Doug Gottlieb Show. We've all had a bad day

(01:50:59):
in the golf course. Sadly, it's not always easy to
find a fix for your golf game, but it is
easy to find a fix, uh fix for your engine
light at auto zone. I don't know why I can't
read today. The free auto zone fixed Finder tool will
find the likely issue, saving you money down the road
getting the zone auto zone. I know what Ryan Music saying.
Why is today unlike any other day? Anyway? Let's get

(01:51:20):
to Isaac Lowen cron can read, can ryat you give
us the news of the moment. What you got, Isaac Douga.
Washington Nationals held a fire sale today, trading infielder Matt
Adams to the Cardinals and infielder Daniel Murphy heard here
to the Cubs. I think I was a bit surprised.
I'm gonna be honest with you. I didn't. I don't
think I was gonna get claimed. I thought I would

(01:51:42):
slide right through. But yeah, it was a surprise to me.
It wasn't a surprise the National's GM Mike Rizzo. To
trade an ultimate professional like Daniel Murphy m Adams is
never easy, and we feel that this was the best
way to facilitate what we're trying to do. Not the
only two thousand eighteen, but as you know, we always
have the one, three and five year plan in place,

(01:52:04):
and this helps expedite those plans. MLB dot Com reports.
The Nationals also put Bright's Harper on waivers, but could
not reach a deal with the team that claimed him,
so he stays in d c for the moment. Late
this afternoon, the NFL suspended Steelers receiver Eli Rodgers for
week one of the regular season against the Cleveland Browns
for violating the league's substance abuse policy, and finally in

(01:52:27):
the NBA, was revealed today that Brooklyn Nets forward Kenneth
for Reid was arrested early Sunday morning for unlawful possession
of marijuana in Bridgehampton, New York. Before the story, Brooke
f Reed posted on Instagram and reference to a charity
event he attended quote this weekend was fun and educational unquote,

(01:52:48):
a phrase that has somewhat of a different connotation today.
Doug back to you, Oh, it's not legal in the state.
That's I believe. What the what the education? No? US, No,
you cannot do that here. Maybe the charity event would
be moved to California or Colorado in future years. You
don't have to move that far though, I think. Uh,

(01:53:09):
I don't know what Connecticut is Massachusetts, you get a
Maine in New Hampshire. UM. Anyway, coming up, two NFL
coaches are developing a beef. I'll have the latest for
you next. Be sure to catch live editions of the
Doug dot Leap Show weekdays at noon Eastern three pm Pacific.

(01:53:31):
Online shopping can be confusing, well not anymore. With True

price you'll pay for your next car. So visit True
Car and enjoy more confident car buying experience. Doug Alive Show,
Fox Sports Radio. So they're gonna have a conference call
in regards to the the helmet rule. And well, I

(01:53:57):
I you know, I've I've said this time and again,
and I do think that, um, I do think that
the NFL is on the right path. It's not perfect,
but a lot of a lot of rules for safety
aren't in fact perfect. They're just not right. It's it's like,
you know, the seat belt sign comes on you're landing.

(01:54:20):
If you don't know, if you ever have children, ralmost
you can probably attest to this. When you have kids,
you'll usually have one. I have three kids, Harper, Grace Hayes,
without fail, one of them, usually Harper. When the seat
belt sign comes on and we're descending, she has to
go to the restroom. It doesn't even matter, she's gone
on the restroom several times on the trip, doesn't matter.

(01:54:41):
So the thing comes on. The thing comes on, and
and you're starting to go down, and all of a sudden,
I gotta go to the bathroom, and you're stuck as
a parent because you're like, look, it was me, I
just risk it, just go for it, and the fly
tendant sir, you're gonna have to sit down, like dude,
you're gonna have to stop me because I got paid. Um.
But it's a little key it and you're like really uncomfortable.

(01:55:02):
You know, it gets when you finally get there. Everybody
stands up. So once you land, it's not like then
you can go. The idea is safety, right, you hit
turbulence when you're going down just one little and all
of a sudden, you can jump up. You can knock
your head in, you can crack your skull, you can
fall into somebody else. There's a million things that can happen.

(01:55:22):
You're on an active runway and a short stop a
left turn, and you can fall and hurt yourself. And
by the way, you can sue the airline. It's one
of the reasons they have it. So it's not always convenient.
It doesn't make sense, like wait a second, we're just descending,
Like I can started getting turbunce, I can hold onto something.
I just need to go in there and go to

(01:55:43):
the bathroom. I'd probably safer in the bathroom than I
would anywhere else. But they do so for safety, and
they do so not get sued. Right. That's the same
thing with the helmet rule. Former players have already sued
the National Football League because the the the NFL didn't
care for them properly during and after they play in

(01:56:05):
the National Football League. The game is bigger, faster, stronger,
and though they have better protection now better helmets butter
shoulder pads, the fact is the athletes are bigger and
the collisions are stronger. Well, we don't hit as much
in practice. Maybe it doesn't ready the body for for
what you're gonna take in the game. The point is
simple that you may not like it, but it does

(01:56:26):
in fact work. And then I it's almost like you
don't want this to the conversation that goes something like this.
Ryan Chase here was basically paralyzed last year. He cannot run,
yet he was a consistent Pro Bowler, all Pro caliber
player who will never play football again. If his story

(01:56:50):
becomes a good story that he gets turned around, he
has a great life afterwards. Think about this for a second.
Would you prefer to somebody to be paralyzed again or
would you prefer somebody die? But fore we make an
adjustment to try and take the helmet as a weapon
out of the game. Let's get to the press, the press.

(01:57:11):
Isaac Long com when you have my friend, we have
breaking news to begin, Doug. The NFL has just suspended
Baltimore Ravens starting cornerback Jimmy Smith without pay for the
first four games of the regular season for violating the
league's personal conduct policy. So missed games against the Bills, Bengals, Broncos,

(01:57:32):
and Steelers. The Athletic just reported the suspension was initially
feared to be six games. Instead it's four games. No
details of what exactly Smith did to violate the personal
conduct policy have emerged as of yet. Well, remember, um,
Jimmy Smith was a guy that this is this is
one of those picks that he had red flags when

(01:57:56):
he came into the nash To Football League and so, um,
there was a there was a reason. He had failed
drug tests, He had a history of arrests, He had
quote unquote maturity issues. So, uh, Jimmy, Jimmy Smith being now,
it took a while for this to rear its head.
That was back in two thousand and eleven. I'm gonna say,

(01:58:17):
and I don't believe he's had any notable mishaps because
he signed a big extension in two thousand and fifteen,
so they rolled the dice with him and one. But
he also tours Achilles ten and going back to last year, um,
that's one of the things that led to the terrible
end to their season. So this is really interesting that

(01:58:40):
Jimmy Smith, the guy that had some baggage in the
NFL draft and suddenly now it rears its head. A
hallmark of being a Super Bowl winning head coach, you
immediately write a book. That's what Doug Peterson did, Fearless
How an underdog becomes a Champion. But in said book,
he criticized Jacksonville head coach Doug more Own for his

(01:59:00):
conservative play calling. At the end of the first half
of the a f C Championship game against the Patriots,
he took a knee on the button. He took a
knee with fifty nine seconds ago, exactly, leading fourteen to ten.
They wind up losing twenty four to twenty. World earlier today,
Maron was asked about the criticism. The Super Bowl did
a great job of coaching. You know, I'm sure there's

(01:59:20):
a long line of people that have the same you know,
questions or feelings. You know, it's just what you're gonna do.
I mean, I read a book in the All Season,
you know, by Mark Manson, you know, the New York
One number one bestseller at the time. So you know,
those things happen, and and that's it. But I respect
the hell out of him and his team, and and
he won a super Bowl, so I really can We lost,
and when you lose, you know, you question everything. I

(01:59:42):
don't have a problem with it. To put that into context,
the title of the book by Mark Manson that Marone
read the subtle art of not giving a f a
counter intwo of a counter intuitive approach to living a
good life. What what he can't say is, hey, that
it's cool he's got he's got a different quarterback than

(02:00:03):
I have. And anybody who says, you know that they
believe in their quarterback in Jacksonville just look at the
end of the first half and then tells you all
you need to know. Meanwhile, Baker Mayfield has only been
in Cleveland Brown's camp for a couple of weeks, but
he also already has his impression of Brown general manager
John Dorsey down pat listen to this. It's going viral

(02:00:24):
as we speak. This is John Dorsey. Are you doing,
buddy boy? Playing in the National Football League It's a blessing,
it's a privilege. Not many people get to do it.
You know what I mean, Buddy boy? It takes dedication.
You know what else takes dedication? Being a Cleveland Brown

(02:00:47):
Baker Mayfield two shows nightly at the Richfield, Ohio Hilton.
Apparently John Dorsey likes his gum and smacks it. It's
called smack. We call it smacking. You guys call it smacking.
He call it smack as well. Finally, let's check in
on the NFL's Mr Happy Pants. New England Patriots head
coach Bill Belichick speaking to radio station w e e

(02:01:09):
I about the new helmet rule. Really, it's not a
change for us, not changed for our coaching staff. We've
never taught that. We've never taught tackling with the crown
of our helmet, putting our head down and you know,
leaning our body forward in that that type of position. Um,
I don't think fundamentally that's a good position of being.
It's not effective and We've always tackled and blocked with
our head up and our eyes open, our head back

(02:01:30):
so we can see what we hit. That's the only
way I've ever coached it. If we do it that way,
then we'll be within the rules. So that's that's what
we try to teach and Doug as much as we
love hearing Mr. Enthusiasm there, I do have an added
detail that just came down about Jimmy Smith's four game suspension.
This is statement released by the Ravens just seconds ago.

(02:01:50):
I'll read from it. Quote. The NFL found evidence of
threatening and emotionally abusive behaviors by Jimmy towards his former
girlfriend that showed a pattern of improper conduct. Our player's
behavior was inappropriate and wrong. It is our understanding that,
following a long running and difficult custody dispute with his
former girlfriend and mother of his son, Jimmy has revolved,

(02:02:14):
has resolved his custody and support issues. Unquote that part
of a statement just released by the Baltimore Ravens regarding
Jimmy Smith's four game NFL suspension for violating the NFL's
Personal Conduct policy. Uh sounds like ugly custody battle, probably
some text messages and once you got the digital footprints,
it's hard to get out of that one. I hate

(02:02:38):
this path that we've gone down. But yeah, that get
out there impressed. That was the press. Um yeah, I mean,
I guess you hope you nip in the bud, But
I don't know, Like, you know, how how much are
how much do we care about in the NFL A right?
How much do we do? Like again, if you tell

(02:03:00):
things to the mother of your child that are disgraceful,
you're a disgrace. And I do think this is But
did he lay a hand on her? Was he simply
verbally and digitally abusive? I don't know, but it doesn't
seem to matter. He's gonna be suspended for the first
four games of the season. S Doug otlieve Show here
