(00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Boom, What Up America,
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio coming to you from
the City of Angels where we are. Well, we're one
(00:43):
day away from the NFL. You know that's right. It
was a holiday weekend, right. That screws the whole thing up,
doesn't It screws your trash up? Wait? Does the trash
go out on Wednesday's a going on Thursday? Because the
trash didn't come on Monday. It's all up? What day's days? Tuesday? No,
it's Wednesday. Uh, we got a football game this week,
(01:06):
NFL football game? Cool on Thursday. That's two days. Wait,
now it's tomorrow. Yep, Tomorrow night Philadelphia will kick off
the NFL season. Falcons Eagles, Falcons Eagles. Um. But I
(01:27):
do think it's kind of interesting, sort of fascinating to
take a look at one of the historically great franchise
that's had a bunch of tumult. Tumult Am I using
that correctly, Ram wills help me help me out here?
Uh not me? I want to lead the fifth on
(01:48):
that one. Um Okay, tumulta's allowed confused noise, especially one
caused by a large mass of people confusion or disorder.
There's been on the mount of a substantial amount of
tumult in Pittsburgh. Right change coordinators and then Ben Rosberg's
(02:09):
the happiest and the best he's ever been. But they
don't have Ryan Shazier. They do add James Washington. They
don't have Levian Bell. Will they sign Levian Bell? They
seem close than they didn't Now Levian Bell's agents like, hey,
we may not come back because they're gonna they're gonna
(02:31):
overuse him. They're gonna give the ball too much to
the guy who wants the ball too much. There's been
some tumult there the But the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were
right there in the conversation among the best teams in
the a f C, are getting ready to kick off
(02:51):
their season against the Cleveland Browns, who with a laughing
stock of football last year, but but did give the
Steelers last year open to me a pretty good game.
They have not been embarrassed by the Steelers as of late,
and I think we'd all conclude that the Browns are
substantially substantially better than they were win last saw them.
(03:14):
Whereas the Steelers, if they don't have Levian Bell, I
don't know what they're gonna look like. There's no Ryan
Schayes here, and James Conner is a step down from
Levian Bell. Everyone would conclude that. But I heard Terry Bradshaw,
of course works with us in Fox TV. I think
(03:34):
Terry is gonna join us next week. He was on
the Dance Cilio show. Dance former player in his own
right at the University of Miami, hosts the morning show
on our San Diego affiliate N point three The Fan,
and Terry had this to say about Mike Tomlin. I
played for a tough sucker and I was afraid of it,
(03:55):
and we played our ass off farm because we feared it.
And I don't see that with a s guy. He's
chest bumping and all that, and I'm just I'm sorry,
but he's not my kind of coach. He's not my
kind of coach because he's a he's seen as a cheerleader.
I need a hardass over there. I need a whistle
around his neck. I need short bike shorts. I need
(04:17):
him to scratch himself more often. He's actually good looking
at all this clothing. He doesn't look substantially unkempt. He
looked like he's bathed at least once, if not twice today.
And that's not what a Pittsburghs either coach wants to
look like. I need somebody's gotta asked you it over there?
(04:38):
Not my kind of coach. Now, look for the record,
this is not new from Terry. It's pretty it's it's uh,
pretty well noted that they are not guys. I don't
think they exchange Christmas cards, do you do? You know
Mike Thomas never finished below five hundred. Been the coach
(05:00):
there since two thousand seven, so we're going a decade.
And one of the problems that we have sometimes is
we don't have a big enough sample size. But I
would I would say that a hundred and seventies six
regular season games, right, two hundred overall games or so,
(05:23):
that's a big enough sample size, and I'll grant you
Pittsburgh Steelers are historic franchise. And with Ben Roethlisberger and
with Jerome Bettis into Levy on Bell and with all
the talent they've had in the defensive side of the ball,
you would guess that most anyone who was a quality
coach would be successful. But like, what are we talking
(05:47):
about here? You don't like his style. You think there's
not a lot of substance there. He's too buddy buddy
with the players. There's a lack of accountability. That's okay.
They may have come up short at times of your expectations,
like last year when they lost in divisional game at
home to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the guys made the
(06:12):
playoffs all but three years. Those three years he didn't
make the playoffs nine and seven in his third year.
That's coming off the Super Bowl hangover eight. Nate Nate,
Nate in two thousand twelve and two thousand thirteen. I
believe Big Ben was hurt one of those two years.
And then there's another year where they lost her. Remember
(06:32):
they lost to the Broncos in the playoffs in the
divisional round, and that's one that went over time, Big
Ben was that was that was one I'm that's back
two thousand eleven, right, that's when tebow tebow time. That
team was not a good team. Ben Roethlisberg was playing
on one leg and they got beat by it like
(06:52):
an eight yard catch and run because they had a
defensive coordinator that was past his prime. Like again, I'm
not gonna sit here and say they're gonna ultimately say,
you know, the great coaches in the history of the
NFL are Vince Lombardi, Bill Belichick and Mike Tomlin. But
you could do a whole hell of a lot worse
(07:14):
than I don't know, you know, eight playoffs in eleven seasons,
than winning sixty percent of your games, then winning a
Super Bowl and losing by the way, beating Kurt Warner
in a Super Bowl in which they had to play
(07:36):
really well against Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald in his prime,
and losing another Super Bowl to Aaron Rodgers. Like I really,
it's one of those things to which I'm like, well,
I can't tell you how, um how the hot dog
has made, but damn it tastes pretty good, you know,
(07:59):
And we can and sit here we can sit here
and say, hey, last year the a f C was
down and there were only you know, the Patriots defense
wasn't good. Nobody believed in Blake Bortles, who had an
incredible roster on defense, but it wasn't a great quarterback.
You could sit there, but we do know that over
(08:23):
the last eleven years in which Mike Tomlin has been
the head coach, the a f C has had in
division the Baltimore Ravens, who have won a Super Bowl
and competed for several others in conference, Peyton Manning with
both the Colts and the Broncos, Tom Brady and Bill
(08:44):
Belichick with the New England Patriots. It's like, you can
sit here and tell me what he hasn't done, But
the reality of it is who's done a better job.
I think Andy Reid's a terrific coach. Every year in
Kansas City they come up short in the playoffs and
he's made one Super Bowl. Ever as head coach go
(09:07):
around the league. Pete Carroll's made two one one, lost one.
But the inability to maintain and had great longevity is
what's ultimately been the downfall of the Seattle Seahawks. Correct
so you can tell me all of these coaches that
(09:28):
you don't like. Man, I don't like that Mike Tomlin
doesn't doesn't rip into guy's booties, and isn't isn't tougher
on him, and there's not greater accountability. But Bill Parcels
used to say, you are what your record says you are. Hey,
Bill Parcel is a great coach. As good a coach
there is, got to super Bowl. New England won a
(09:48):
couple of super Bowls. Of the New York Giants my
playoff games even with the Dallas Cowboys. Anybody, not one,
not one that was in the NFC, which at the
time was weaker than the a f C. So is
is Terry wrong? Not by his own estimation? Tared played
(10:11):
for a hardass Terry once four super Bowls. Terry has
been analyzing the NFL for a long time. But let's
catch our breath and get some balance here. The league
to which produces this half the teams that make the
playoffs every year don't make the playoffs the next year.
That's the stat that we know. And the Patriots who
(10:31):
have defied that, but they defied it mostly because they're
in a crumby division The Steelers have made the playoffs
eight of the eleven years he's been there. They made
them each of the last four years, and they've done
so during an NFC era which had Ray Lewis and
(10:51):
as dynamic defense in the a f C North that
you're going to find. Frankly the town in Cincinnati for
a short period of time. Even the court back play
wasn't great. Um, you had Carson Palmer who was really
good but then got hurt against Pittsburgh, by the way
in the playoffs, who they beat, and then Andy Dalton.
Those are loaded teams. But Tom Brady Peyton Manning both
(11:16):
in the a f C and the Ravens in the
a f C. And here's a team that's consistently been
in the playoffs and in the hunt and has been
to two Super Bowls. That's what the hell are we
talking about. You don't like Mike Tomlin because he's he's
too close with the players. Hey man, it's two thousand eighteen.
Not everybody can be a hard ass, not every and
(11:38):
a hardass style doesn't always work, and whatever he's doing
while at night might not be working. Um to your expectations,
it's been pretty amn good consistently, so don't believe me.
I got eleven years of data to prove it. Cota. Next,
I'll talk with Mark Schlayer if he won three Super Bowls,
(11:58):
he played for a couple of great coaches. Get his
sense of of Mike Tomlin it is I mean, is
it worth diving in and going like, hey, maybe he's
he not ultimately the answer in Pittsburgh because he's so
good on camera, because he looked good in a parka,
I don't know. Plus, we'll get you ready for Thursday
(12:19):
Night football, which is tomorrow night. We'll get the We'll
we'll get some hot takes out of stink. He's watching
a ton of football. We'll figure out what he really really.
I got some things to throw out at him. We'll
see what his reaction is. That's up coming next. But first,

doug um arms or legs. Don't skip leg day on me.
I'm no listen. Just because I have the legs of
(14:27):
a hundred and eighty pound man does not mean that
I'm skipping leg day. You know, you have plenty knee surgeries.
Your legs don't grow like they wants used to, but
they're still strong. All right, fair, fair enough. I'm getting
ready for We're getting ready for the Atlanta Falcons taking
on the Philadelphia Eagles. Who better to talk about what
it's like the season after you win a Super Bowl
(14:48):
than a guy who's been a part of three Super
Bowl winning teams. How much of a challenge is that, really? Oh,
it's a huge It's a huge challenge. I mean, I
think there's so many things, Doug that goes into that.
You know, you're sending a championship one, Um, how many
guys are satisfied, how many guys who are playing for
that world championship, and how satisfied are those guys. So
(15:10):
I think there's always certain guys on your team that
are stated by success good Man, that's over, I'm a champion.
Now I'm playing for money. So there's that that aspect
of it. There's the celebrity aspect of it. You win championships.
Are you in a championship and the next thing, you know,
is just skipping some of the attention to detail. They
got you there because you're on the speakers circuit. You know,
(15:33):
you're you're making money, you're doing endorsement deals, you're getting
drug away from your training and from your preparation. So
there's that aspect of it. Um there's the aspect of
it of people covet your players because they want championship
members in their organization. So you use key pivotal pieces
to the puzzle. And it's not always it's not always
(15:54):
your star guys. Sometimes it's a glue guys. And you know,
I mean, you played enough sports and you played at
a very high double does There's certain guys that don't
get a whole lot of attention, but they're what makes
practice go. They give you the look on defense, um
of the best outside linebacker or the best cover corner guy.
And they're absolute blue guys to your team. They're essential.
(16:14):
And you lose those guys even though the general fan
doesn't know who they are, it's devastating to your locker room.
So there's so many things that stack up against you
as a world champion when you go out to defend
your crown. Um, there's other that you also use. Your coaches.
They've lost some of their coaching staff. Here's here's look.
I know that in the NFL because there's only sixteen
games generally, and because football is a game to which
(16:37):
you can't not play hard. But the and and I
also know that the reality is fans don't really affect
the game, right. They can go crazy, but you are
gonna be everybody's biggest game, right. Like it said, there's
a different attention to detail when the defending champs who
have been talking a lot of trash the entire offseason
come to town like those. That's also a fact, is
(17:00):
it not. Oh, absolutely everybody wants. Everybody's gonna give you
their best shot. Like you said, there's a little bit
more attention to detail, UM, And so yeah, that's that's
all part of the deal as well. I mean, you're
you're the one that's everybody's circles on the calendar, so
that makes it tougher there. There is no question that
all those things factor in. UM. And you know why
(17:23):
there is a super Bowl hangover why it's so difficult.
The other thing is you played deeper into the season
than anybody else. I mean, you know you've got an
extra in one of the playoffs. Here you gotta ask
you a a couple of games next a couple of weeks,
you've got the super Bowl. Um, it's just a really
hard thing to do. And I'm telling you the reason.
And I you could probably go through the Steelers who repeated,
(17:43):
or the Cowboys back midday who repeated? Are the Patriots
who repeated, But if you talk to anybody on the
Broncos who repeated, they will tell you, to a man,
probably the biggest factor was the six season ninety seven
playoff loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Like, if there was
one thing that galvanized us as a football team was
(18:05):
that loss. Is the hardest loss I've ever been through.
We looked at like we squandered an opportunity to be
the first team to ever three p And anytime things
didn't go well in practice, any time um there was
a lack of attention to detail in meetings or whatever,
that game would come up. And it wasn't the coaches,
it was the players going, head, don't don't pull out
of Jacksonville. Man, I remember when I feel it like
(18:26):
that again. And so it was the kind of catalytic
event in our lives a football team that that motivated us.
They kept this going. It was the motivation of fear,
the motivation of the paranoia, the motivation of failure that
drove that team to back to back World champions March
Layer three times Super Bowl champions, joining us in the
Doug Gallup Show on Fox Sports Radio. Then you have
(18:47):
the Falcons who didn't seem to figure out they had
their own Super Bowl hangover, they had the thing one
and then you know, uh, and then the Patriots happened.
Took them about half the season to figure it out.
They're back loaded for bear. They won in l A,
could have won in Philadelphia. What are your thoughts on
the Falcons this year? A team that I mean, outside
of Julio Jones and is like day long holdout, nobody
(19:09):
has seemingly discussed and what they're gonna throw out there. Yeah,
they're a very talented team, UM well one exceptionally in
athletic like everybody's athletics. But I called one of the
games late in the season and I said, if you've
built a four by one change, there's no question in
my mind that the Atlanta Falcons winning. They are that fast,
(19:31):
both on defense and on offense. I mean, they have
unbelievable athletes that are playing. I mean their their teams
speed is outrageous um at all levels, at the D
line level, the linebacker level, the receiver level, at the
dB level, I mean at the running back level. They
are exceptionally gifted that way. It took them a while
to to figure out what they were on offense, and
(19:53):
the new offensive coordinator who came in their um UH
coach Stark, came in there kind of you know, adopted
their kind of language, but tried to try to implement
some of his beliefs and his philosophies. So there was
a learning curve not only from the players getting to
understand Sark, but also Sark trying to understand the players
(20:13):
and what their strengths were, what their weaknesses were, and
putting them in a position to consistently execute. But I
will tell you, Doues, I was, you know, called games
all last year and at every Friday practice, and there
was not one Friday practice that I was more impressed
with than the one I saw from the Atlanta Falcons
from a from the standpoint of speed, execution, understanding intensity.
(20:38):
I mean they they practiced on Friday um like they
meant business and um, and they were impressive. There was
no there was no grabass and going on on that
Friday practice. They were out there to accomplish their work
and then you know, to get off the field. Mark
Layer joins just in the Doug out Lip Show on
Fox Sports Radio. You you live, work and played for
(20:59):
the Denver Bronco is what's your sense of this Bronco town.
There a lot of people thought Vance Joseph wouldn't make
it two year two. He did they know they needed
to get go ahead and get a quarterback. They did,
but it's it's case Keenum, a guy who his production
has belied his lack of size and sometimes lack of
arm strength. What are your thoughts on the Broncos and
how they fit in into the a f C West.
(21:19):
You know, it's really interesting. I think they could surprise
some people now. They have really changed philosophically and and
sometimes you need an adult in the room. And I
think they brought Gary Kubiac back to really consult um
in the draft and kind of in the direction of
the organization, and I think it showed with this draft.
I think they could have a Saints like type draft
(21:40):
from a year ago. If you remember, and it's hard
to remember this because they had Drew Brees the Saints
when seven or nine, seven and nine, seven and nine,
three straight years of seven and nine, and then they
won the division at eleven and five, partly because Lattimore hit,
Camara hit rams Check hit like. They had three guys
that were rookies that played at a Pro Bowl what
and it put them over the top. You look at
(22:02):
the Broncos draft class between Shove between Courtland Sutton between
Royce Freeman. There you have two guys that are gonna start.
Courtland Suton's gonna play an awful lot because there's so
much eleven personnel three wide receiver personnel played in this
league that he is practically a starter. They've got a
couple of other guys that are gonna contribute significantly, like
Josie Jewell and and a few other guys. Um, Dave
(22:25):
Sean Hamilton's uh, they have really done this. And then
you go back to the last year with Jake Butt
from Michigan, who he's going to play at the tight
end position, who was red shirted last year on a
t L recovery. Um, this is a team that's got
a chance to surprise him. If I think Kaseeena is
a damn good quarterback, you know, it's it's so funny.
I think the one question mark they had going into
(22:48):
this camp, and they had a funch going into this
camp that wasn't answered, was their offensive line. I think
they answered the the the middle of the field receiver,
both tight end and wide receiver. I think they answered
the running back position. I think they answered a lot
of questions. There are offensive lines to me, is still
a weak link. So if you don't protect that offensive
(23:08):
line by running the ball, by setting up your play action,
by letting them be aggressive, if you get into a
position where you have to throw it thirty plus times
a game, not only are gonna lose the game, but
you have a chance of losing your quarterback. So I
think they've got to be really careful and build Musgrave.
Their coordinator has to be exceptional, a creating um a
creating plays and designing plays. They keep them in front
(23:31):
of the change that they can execute and uh and
make sure they're not in third down a long situation.
I tuck to an NFL personnel guy yesterday, he's like Mahomes,
a special. Mahomes is absolutely special. It's more than just
the arm. Uh. He's gonna be a problem. I'm I'm
I'm I'm a torn here, right because Alex Smith wasn't
doing anything wrong, right. He actually had the second highest
(23:55):
yards per completion in the NFL last year. But like
he's known as Captain checked down, there's a limit to
what would his talent would do in the playoffs. Probably
why San Francisco moved on from him, And that's obviously
why Kansas City moved on from him. How does the
Kansas citything play out this season with Mahomes? Well, I agree,
Mahomes has you know, elite level talent um like his
(24:18):
ability to the slinging, his ability to throw it is
um pretty much unmatched. I wouldn't I wouldn't. I think
he was in high school. I think he's ninety four
off the mound, doug Um. He has absolutely got a host. Now.
I think the issue that you get into, obviously with
young players is they're gonna have their share of mistakes.
And the question is to me, is does he make
(24:40):
enough big place to overcome the mistakes or the mistakes
uh equal the greater some of the big place. That
that's the question that you have to ask yourself. Andy
Reid does a phenomenal job of designing plays, especially play
action to attack you. Um, everything that he does, everything
that he runs, has corresponding play act and that looks identical.
(25:01):
And he does it from white splits, from tight splits, um,
from you know, zoom motions and all kinds of different
things that give your quarterback an opportunity to be successful
and to make easy throws. So uh, you know, as
long as you give him those opportunities, um, he'll hit
the big throws down the field. And I don't think
there's any question. It's can you stay can you stay
(25:22):
within yourself? Um? When when the defense takes away all
the big grows, when the defense play such sound football
that it forces you to be patient, because that's when
you and you tend to make mistakes. You know you're
being patient, You're being patient, they're longing to sleep. All
of a sudden, they run a you know, a go
route with a stick underneath to the tight end, and
(25:45):
you're playing a trap cover two and and that cornerback
opens up and shows man cover starts to run. Also
he spends his hips and he's sitting right there on
that stick route, and it's to pick six the other way. Like,
those are the things that you're gonna have to be
patient with, um and and young quarterbacks tend to have
a problem with that, especially young quarterbacks with big arms,
because young quarterbacks was with big arms are like young
(26:06):
pictures with big arms. They'd like to show off their
big arms. And and often times I remember talking to
Chipper Jones and my son first came up to the
big league and he goes, I love young kids who
are proud of their fastballs because you can't sneak You
can't sneak cheese by a rat. And I am a rat,
you know, and I am gonna I'm absolutely gonna turn
(26:26):
on a fastball. So yeah, those are the things you
kind of tend to worry about. Great stuff. That's Mark
Schlaire at three times Super Bowl champion. Last thing I
want to ask for Let you go before you get
back to working on those big calf muscles. H Dallas Cowboys,
the departure from Jason Witten and Dez Bryant to go
to kind of a no name wide receiving corps. They
do have Zeke Back, talented offensive line, Tyrn Smith back
(26:49):
because he wasn't healthy last year, Big year for Dak.
Does he have the personnel to make him look like
the quarterback he had two years ago? If his old
line is dominant, then yes you will. You will be
able to create that with a great running game and
(27:10):
um and and and pulling the play action off of
that stuff. The thing that scares me, Dougie is Smith
has chronic back issues. Frederick may not play this year.
Like I would be shot, I would be surprised if
he plays this year, and even if he plays this
year with jan Barret syndrome and coming off of that,
(27:32):
does he have the elite level strength and more importantly,
the elite level reaction time because that's where it interrupts,
interrupts that signal. It damages your nerves and interrupts the
signal from your brain down to your extremities. So will
he look the same. And then Zach Martin hasn't played
in the preseason because the knee injury. He says he'll
be healthy week one. But you know, how healthy are
(27:53):
you gonna be? And and how does that affect your game?
So if that offensive line doesn't play well and they
didn't play exceptionally well last year, Um, what does that
do when you have, you know, a lack of name
talent outside that That's what scares me. Great stuff, stin't
get back to the weight room. Thanks for taking some
time and look forward. What's your first game this weekend?
(28:15):
I've got Seattle at Denver home game. Um okay, uh,
Earl Thomas is apparently going to show up, uh, and
and we'll play and we'll play. Although still kind of
disgruntled with his with his I G what like, what
is Seattle's got so many no name guys? Right? And
but here here's my defensive Seattle. Richard Sherman wasn't it
(28:36):
wasn't Richard Sherman before. He was Richard Sherman right. Earl
Thomas wasn't Rarl Thomas before. So have they drafted really
well and they got new no name guys? Or is
this a substantial step down and rebuild from in Seattle?
Just because you don't know their names don't mean it
doesn't mean these guys can't play. Watching them on film, Um,
and I've been breaking down their film for the last
(28:58):
two days. Um. They are flying around now Ken Norton Jr.
And their defensive coordinator was with Kate Carroll at USC.
He's back. They're running the same system, so the system
is not new. So these guys have time within that system. Doug.
I'm telling you what they are flying around. Um, it's
pretty simplified defensively, Um, they understand what their responsibilities are.
(29:21):
They're gonna tackle well, they're gonna play with attitude. But
I'm telling you put them on film. Um, they're tied together,
they are in sync. They're flying around and they're playing, uh,
they're in the secondary. They're playing really good football the week.
The weakness has been throughout the preseason is some of
their run fits and gaps schemes um they have. They
have busted assignments up front, but not really in that secondary.
(29:43):
That secondary, even without Earl Thomas, I think it's going
to be a lot better than advertised. Just because you
don't know their names. Can they protect Russell Wilson the
much better upfront to Um the one the one week Link,
like their offensive line is much better on film when
they were a year ago. And they're running back. So
Chris Carson has had a great three season, as has
(30:06):
Mike Davis. Um. So you know their rookie, uh what
is his name? Or Shawn Perry has not played a lot.
He's been dinged up. But those two running backs have
played really well. The one week link is their right tackle,
who is a former first rounder. Jermaine Effetti has has
really he has looked really bad. Um terrible sets, big
time pressures, gets his shoulders turn per pendicular line of scrimmage,
(30:28):
giving path to the quarterback. The thing you have is
you have an elite athlete, an elite player in Russell
Wilson who can make um make up for a multitude
to sin. So he covers a lot of awarps that
that you'll get from that group when they do break down.
But they're they're a much better football team than they
wore a year ago. That's Sunday NFL on Fox Seattle,
(30:50):
taken on the Denver Broncos. Oh if that game was
played a couple of years ago, it was actually in
the Super Bowl. You'll hear Marsh Layras on the call. Stay,
get back to the workout. Thanks for joining us. You

Let's find out what's going on in sports. Little day Baseball,
Dan Fire, what do you yeah? Stay? Baseball in Atlanta
where the Boston Red Sox scored six times at the
top of the eighth inning to pull even with Atlanta.
But then Freddie Freeman, who was supposed to have the
Delmadina Elmadina High School. Freddy Freeman, that's my brother and sisters. Well,
(31:31):
he was supposed to have the day off and the
like Freddy, why don't you pin chip for us? So
he does and he it's a solo home run and
the Braves are now up eight seven at the top
of the ninth dinning, So not bad work for Freeman.
Home run number twenty one on the season. Indians have
a three one lead on the Royals right now on
the top of the ninth dinning, trying to close it out.
In Cleveland. You mentioned it, you were talking with Stink
about it. S safety Earl Thomas ending his hold out
(31:52):
reported to the team today. Then their Steelers running back
Levian Bell, he remains a holdout. If you missed it.
At the top of the show, Doug talked about his
agent talking to Sirius XM NFL Radio. This was the
exchange earlier on the reason why Levian Bell may not
be reporting to the team in the near future. Well,
I can understand that from the team's perspective, I would
(32:14):
what what would you do? I would use that payer.
I was using use him as much as possible to
make sure that we have the best possible chance of
winning that Super Bowl, and obviously him setching the football,
running and catching is big. But that doesn't answer the
question of what you guys are, what's your plan moving forward? Oh?
I mean, I think if you know you can read
(32:34):
him between those lines. That was Brady Quinn talking with
the decent macar You can hear Brady Quinn by the way,
Sunday with Jonas Knox. You're on Fox Sports Radio. That
was on Serious x M NFL Radio. But yeah, read
between the lines, Doug. That's why they want to keep
Levian Bell out of action because they think he's going
to get too much action. With the Pittsburgh Steelers a
giant study and Evan Ingram clear concussion protocol, he'll play
Sunday in their opener against Jacksonville. What do you do
(32:58):
with Levan Bell Man, I guess, I mean, you're his agent.
The whole ideas, well, well, we'll give listen, we're gonna
we're gonna sit him out because he's gonna get used
to punch. But um that that that that seems like
a faulty plan because look at it, it works one
of two ways. Either the Steelers lose and need him
(33:20):
and run the risk of not making the playoffs or
they win. They're like, dude, we didn't need him anyway, right,
so and and then like as much as you could say,
well it would take. He wouldn't have as much wear
and tear on his body if he doesn't get as
many carries, doesn't play as many games. It doesn't really
(33:41):
have any effect that most once you hit thirty. Once
he had thirty, your production generally. Frank Gore is one
of the exceptions. Drops Earl Thomas was back, but he
missed out on a ton of money. Real news or

Doug is real news? Fake news? Alright, real news or
fake news? Doug? Even the world? Thomas reported to the Seahawks.
They the team is enforcing the finds he accrued from
his holdout totally more than one million dollars. They are
or not they are going to enforce the fines? Is
that real news are fake news? Sound are fake news?
(36:12):
That seems to be the case. Reports saying that the
Seahawks likely won't enforce the fines, but Pete Carroll says
that he doesn't have any information that they haven't uh
made up their mind on whether the fines will or
won't be so fake news that they're going to report
say that they likely aren't. Be surprising if they did,
it would be over a million dollars. I don't understand that.
Why why you wouldn't I mean, what would cause Like, look,
(36:33):
did you want to hold out? You gotta there's gotta
be some sort of penalty for holding out, right, sure,
I mean that's the problem with the rams, with with
Aaron Donald's, Like if I'm one of these guys like
I just hold out and are you not gonna find me? Cool?
I'll just show up when I want to show up.
I don't think it's a great look. You don't have
(36:53):
necessarily find him A million dollars gotta be some sort
of do you find it? I know we got the
other one to go to, but do you find it
weird that the Seahawks then turned down the Cowboys offer
of a second round pick, which had seemed to be
what they had been asking for the whole time. No,
I don't. I think I think they sat there and thought,
who won a second round? Want a second round pick?
(37:14):
And they probably let let's just ride this sucker out.
Sure right. They probably also think, let's see how are
they may believe they're a little bit better than other
people think they are. Let's see how it goes. We
can always get a second rounder for him. We can
always trade him to the Cowboys in early on the season,
so we don't don't have to do it right now.
(37:35):
Real news are fake news, Doug that Redskins said and
Jordan Read is questionable to play Sunday against Arizona because
of maaking injuries are fake. It's been real news for
the last like four years. But yeah, Jake Gruden saying
that Jordan Read healthy, ready to go. If you have
Jordan Read on your fantasy team, play him week one
against the Arizona Cardinals. Okay, um, I'm interested. See how
(37:57):
David there's a bunch of fantasy stuff from that game.
David Johnson, the fantasy beast, and like, look, his his
argument is going to be, like, look, I hurt my wrist,
you know, at my wrist, So I'm completely fresh from
last year. There's a bunch of fantasy stuff I want
to see. And then I want to see Sam Bradford,
who played great football last year. Uh in Week one
(38:19):
and then all of a sudden he was hurt and
no one knew when he got hurt, and he barely
played again the rest of the year. So fascinated to
see what happens with the Cardinals and the Redskins, even
if that's a game of two teams. I don't expect
to contend for the playoffs. Real news are fake news,
Doug that one voter in the AP College Football Top
twenty five poll dropped Ohio State twenty spots from five
(38:39):
to twenty five following their seventy seven point outbursting to
win against Oregon State. Outside they're real and they're spectacular.
Johnny Miller of w b Z in Boston, who covers
the Red Sox I think on a full time basis,
has an a P vote for the college football rankings
and dropped the buck ice twenty points spots. Why does
he have a vote? I don't know. I've never I've
(39:01):
never understood this. I'll be I'll be honest with you, Okay. Um,
I've covered college football for fifteen years in the national level, Okay,
and I honestly think it's impossible for these guys that
cover teams, cover leagues to go The only people that
should have a P votes should be guys that cover
the national scene, you know, because I can sit at home,
(39:24):
Like next weekend is Auburn l S you coach, I
was gonna join us. I got a buddy who's got
a box at LS AT at Auburn, I'm friendly obviously
with the coaching is the basketball coaching staff there, and
I got some friends, like let's go to the game.
Like the only reason I don't want to go to
the game, in addition to like leaving your family at home, Like,
that's a big that's a big car chip to put in.
(39:46):
You know, that's for for the wife at home. Um.
But the big, the big one is I don't want
to miss all the rest of the games. I can't
see all the rest of the games I watched, I think,
maybe not start to finish almost every football game almost
everyone last weekend, and I wouldn't have the ability to
do so. So I don't know why Johnny Miller has
(40:07):
a vote. I don't know why guys that cover individual
teams and have to go to the games have votes.
It's just part of the flaw ap voting system. And
why do guys cover the Red Sox have votes? That's
that's the other thing. It's it's amazing guys will never
give up those votes. No Heisman votes as well, Like
we don't have one here at Fox Sports Radio, but
the most random people in the world have Heisman votes.
(40:28):
So anyway, real news are fake news. Doug to Baltimore
Orioles will incorporate brail lettering on their jersey during a
home game later this month. Who will the Baltimore Orioless
Oh my gosh, the Orioles will become the first team
ever to incorporate Brail on a jersey. They're hosting the
(40:51):
National Federation of the Blind Night on September eighteen when
they host the Blue Jay, So instead of Orioles across
the chest, it will say Orioles, but it will be
in Braille. They have a picture of the orioles Twitter
page of the jerseys and they actually look kind of cool. Uh,
they do look kind of cool. I'm looking at it
right now. Do blind people know how bad the Orioles
(41:13):
actually are? I'm sure, like, like they're sitting there reading
Braill like, oh that's cool. Wait the records? What they
keep running their fingers over it? Where's the rest of
the numbers for win? Uh? Real news are fake news.
Doug Ryan, music our producer, almost carted his first hole
in one while playing golf with his future father in
(41:33):
law this past week. You are fakes. I assume it's
fake news. I just I'm guessing that he probably didn't
come close, but maybe he did. Ryan didn't come close
at all, that'd be a no. Okay, alright, it was
fake news. Good by you. This is game time on
the Dug Godly Show. Do you let him win? I
(41:55):
wouldn't say I let him win. He won outright by
just being far better than I am. There you go, well,
then you let him win los los long as you
let him win low as you didn't win. Because you
always have that trash talk that you could use. Right,
you had that card that you could use that he
knows that you know and that you know that he knows,
but you should never use it. And if you want
(42:17):
to know what it is, come in. I'll tell you
during the break. One big problem I have with players
holding out for new contracts share with you next. Be
sure to catch live editions of The Doug dot Leap
Show week days in noon eastern three pm Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app. What
Up Doug gott Leap Show, Fox Sports Radio Coming to
(42:38):
you from the City of Angels. You know, it's so interesting.
There's such a disconnect between fans and the reality of
sports right because fans believe, hey, everybody should just get
to pam, payam, payam, pam. I told you last week
(43:00):
and it proved to be true. No one is untradeable.
It all depends on what assets you're want to move
for a guy. This is what's crazy about the UM
Khalil Mack trade. If you go back to last week
before the trade was consummated, consummats a great word, right,
the trade was in fact consummated, but when people say consummated,
(43:22):
they always think sexually in you and though, like now,
there's other things you can consummate in your life. Before
the trade was consummated the Raiders, it was reported we're
asking for two first round picks. Do you remember what
the response from around the league was, Oh, what a
ridiculous Oh he's gonna give to first round picks. Nobody's
(43:45):
gonna trade to first round picks. Yeah, come, I'll would
just stop Bears it. And no matter what you think
of the Bears defense, they've put some money behind it.
And Clue Macks a hell of a player. I mean,
I'm gonna sit here and tell you he's not a
tremendous player. The reality is like that, is that the
(44:05):
Bears don't make the playoffs. Extremely difficult division with the
Packers having a chance to compete for Super Bowl. The
Minnesota Vikings have a ridiculous depth of talent on both
sides of the football, and the Detroit Lions are kind
of that seven nine to nine and seven team, and
they they change coaches because they're looking to kind of
(44:27):
break through. And then you got the Bears who have
an unproven quarterback, an unproven head coach who's a quarterback whisperer,
and a remade defense with two talented, talented linebackers ro
Kuan Smith they drafted out of George I. Love and
Khalil Mack who they traded for. So the point is
(44:49):
that at least this year, the first round draft pick
that the Raiders acquired is going to be a good one,
Like they'll have at least one and maybe two early
first round picks. So this idea, this idea that the
Raiders got got fleeced. Like really again one week ago today,
(45:12):
if if I said on this radio show, the Raiders
are asking for two first round picks, you, as a
football fan, I would be like, no way. Then they
get two first round picks and you can't believe that
they made that deal. But I think that, um, I
(45:33):
truly believe, honestly believe that between the Aaron Donald contract
and the Khalil Mack contract, Levy on Bell and his
representation believe the market has changed. When the market is not.
(45:57):
Pittsburgh Steelers franchised him last year. He held out, miss
training camp, showed up, wasn't sharp, they didn't give him
the ball a ton early on, then got to be
a very good running back. They end up losing the
Jacksonville Jaguars. An offer was apparently made two years ago.
Offer was last year. Offers made this year deals the
(46:19):
deal couldn't be done. Levian bell is held out and
now it's reported he may hold out for even longer
to protect his body for his next job. The two
things that I don't like about players that hold out
the ones that are disingenuous about the money that they
got in front loaded contracts, like that of Earl Thomas,
(46:41):
who did show up, by the way, but on his
Instagram feed said he still feels uh disrespected. Right, Oh,
the disrespect will be noted. You know what else is noted? Earle?
That you got a front loaded contract, that you're twenty
nine years old, and that the Seattle Seahawks have lived
up to their bargain of paying you every penny they
owed you on that on that line that was signed right,
(47:06):
Like NFL players gonna sit there and go like, hey,
we don't get guaranteed contracts. Seattle is gonna pay him
every penny. They told him you're gonna pay him, and
they're the bad guy. Why because he went into the
locker room with Dallas Cowboys and said, come get me.
The other one is the idea that all the players
on their team are all into them getting paid. Get yours, dude,
(47:29):
Get yours. Mike Marquise Pouncy to the NFL Network says
he'd much prefer Bell just say when he's going to
show up, even if it's week ten. Why play hide
and seek? Why let your agents say this. Just man
up and tell us what you're gonna do. Ramon Foster,
(47:51):
offensive Lineman, what do you do? Here's the guy who
doesn't give a damn. I guess we'll treat it as such.
I just hate it's come to this. He's making seven
times what I make as much, seven times as much
as I make, twice as much as al Villaneueva is making,
and we're the guys that do it for him. Who
(48:16):
this is? This is false assumption that everyone wants everybody
to get paid because it drives up everybody's value. How
many times I got there's a pie there, Bud, there's
a pie. We're offering you a substantial slice of the pie.
If you don't like that slice of the pie and
(48:37):
you've gotten you have two choices. Don't show up or
show up. That's it. But the cat and mouse thing,
I don't blame guys for being done with him. So
the two things that you need to know are one,
guys are lying to you about how much Look how
much I make this year compared to other guys, Like, yeah,
Julio Jones did the same thing. You've got a massively
front loaded contract. The overall average is about right. The
(49:00):
same thing with Levy on Bell. The second thing is
guys in their own team aren't all hot to trot
about holding out. You want to hold out for the
first couple of preseason games, you're good enough to get
away with it, and you'll show up on in shape
and on time. Sure, I'm not a huge fan of
it because most of these offensive linemen have to show
up from day one. But okay, you start missing games,
(49:21):
you start missing even prep for games, and it starts
getting real. It started. It starts affecting our team, and
how it affects our team affects my ability to get paid.
And I mean, like, look, we can compare him to
Aaron Donald and Khalil Mack but one their defensive players.
(49:43):
Two they haven't been injured. Three they're grade on and
off the field. Levan Bell has been injured and has
been has had some off the field issues. And oh yeah,
by the way, plays a different position, a different side
of the ball, and a position that no matter how
off active he is, doesn't have his great effect on
the game. The game is about the quarterback? Can you
(50:06):
can you? And can you pressure the quarterback? And frank
quite frankly, can you then protect the quarterback? And running
back does protect the quarterback running the football, catching the
football in the backfield past protection when let's not say
the running backs are not important, but their importance is
not nearly what it was viewed to be. And you
(50:26):
can get multiple guys, but I think the big thing is, like, look,
everybody expected you to hold out. He even told us
at the Super Bowl he wasn't gonna show up for
training camp. That's fine if everyone knew that was happening.
Now you're threatening to miss the season. To malt right,
(50:48):
that's what's happened with the Pittsburgh Steelers. We got a
great hour for you at our zeron head coach at

time you can say that? Coach O is gonna join us?

and yet disappointing offensively went out and smashed the U.
(51:32):
We're about a week away from getting you ready for

Coach O will join us at org Ron, head coach

It is an all the way to number eleven the

guest on Fox Sports Ready coach, Oh, thanks so much
for taking time. Um, let me ask you got a
chance to watch some film, Take a breath, review your
(52:35):
team's performance. Give me your biggest takeaway of watching your
team's first win of the season. We played as a team,
great leadership, started fast. I guess a very good Miami team,
very well prepared. But as you watched the tape, there
was a lot of mistakes a lot of fundamental errors
that were made that our guys are gonna have to
(52:56):
fix this week. In order us to get to where
we want to go. I think though that all of
us who have watched the L s U program is, uh,
you've been around there obviously with the previous staff and
then taking over his intern Now the head coach just
kind of waiting for competent and consistent quarterback play. What
do you see from Joe Burrow? A kid who comes
over from Ohio State kind of first like thrown right
(53:16):
into the fire lights around popcorns popping. How did he
great out? He did great? You know, obviously there were
some m so something went on in the first quarter
about clock management and getting places called, and he remained
confident and poise. He did exactly what we thought he
would do. Change some plays and some critical times in
(53:38):
the ball game. Was accurate with most of his passes,
what stood the pressure. Joe's a winner. We knew that.
We're very proud to have him. No, I I know
you like it's one of those things like you think
you know what you got, but there has to be
a level of man this is. We're not like this
week he gets Southeastern right, We're not like playing a
sister of the poor. You're playing Miami in a hotly
(54:00):
contested game. Was what was your level of confidence coming
in that you knew he could play at that level
of football, you know, just just being around Joe, watch
them study and beating him around and practice. You know,
we have a pretty good defensive line ourself. He was
under the rest. Uh. We were very confident going into
into the game about our football team. Now we didn't know,
(54:22):
you know, exactly what was going to go on, but
we expected to play very well and we did and
I'm glad we did. And you lose a linebacker to injury, Uh,
you're down the right tackle. Look, I I get that
you still have like a week to get ready for
Auburn um. But but how does your team change with
the injuries sustained against Miami. No, we say, next man up,
We gotta we're gonna step up. You know, Michael Divinity
(54:44):
had a second and a half rate. Tharton's gonna play more. Uh,
you know, Andre Anthony ultra vess more. And we have
a freshman in Gerald Cherry. Those guys are going to
play it outside linebacker. We feel that we have some
some good guys there. You know, ken Ban was out
best one, so those guys got to step up. That's
the voice of at Orizon, head coach of l s U.
(55:05):
He's joining us in the Doug Gottlib Show here on
Fox Sports Radio. Southeast Louisiana comes in to Tiger Stadium
and then match up a showdown with Auburn, who I
know you've watched on tape. I knew you're close with
Kevin Steele, their defensive coordinator. I don't want to completely
undersell Southeast Louisiana, but uh, your early thoughts on the
fight on on Auburn. You know it's tough. I watched.
(55:27):
I watched a lot of part of the game in
the hotel at number five. Derek Brown was hard to block.
You was all over the place. Their defensive line physical.
Kevin is a great coach. Socice coach Miels on going offense.
I don't see how much of it. You know obviously
at Southeast Louisiana this week. You know we can't overlook anybody.
We learned out less of last year in destroyed, so
(55:49):
we totally focused on Southeast Louisiana's You mentioned learning your
lesson last year. You also look, the Matt Canda thing
just didn't work. Wasn't a great fit with what you
guys for trying to do How much more comfortable are
you with this staff this year as opposed to what
you had last year? No, Stephen, I've known each other
since n seventy nine. He's a Tiger through and through.
(56:10):
We're on the same page. We're able to talk about
the differences and opinions if we have it. Uh, he's
a great leader. How guys are working very hard. And look,
I'm just happy to Steve our coordinator, and uh, just
happy about our staff. I love our staff right now?
You you answer you you finish every interview. I know
you owe this one with with Go Tigers. Do you
do that with every conversation you have now as well? Like, hey,
(56:33):
hey coach, how I am good? By the way Go Tigers?
Is it every conversation You're only interviews? Yeah, you know interviews?
You know, people start to do it to me now,
So it's kind of good and orgeron our guest on
the Doug Gottlieb Show, good weekend for the SEC with
the exception of Tennessee, I don't think that surprises anyone
in the league. But but having taken a breath and
(56:55):
looking up at Bama smashes Louisville, Arkansas gets a win.
We mentioned all old biscoes out and throttles Texas Tech
in a neutral site game A and m at home
in Mississippi State as well. Uh it as much as
beat Miami feels good boy, and it looks like there's
a tough Rohdoho done it. Here's why you come here,
and that's why you come to l s U. That's
(57:16):
why you compete in the best conference and in the country.
We invited, we know the type of schedule we have.
We're gonna take it one game at a time. We're
ore ls U and we're proud of it. One one
player who it may not have popped out to us
because we watched for stats, but it does show up
to you and to your coaching staff. One l s
U tiger that played really, really well. That's not getting
(57:36):
the credit he deserves. You know, I can't name one particularly.
I thought, uh Lloyd Cushionbury at offensive line did well.
Damian Lewis, I thought that guy did very well. Uh.
You know, Brandon for whole co game j C Transfer,
he played pretty good. Glenn Logan played good for us
first play. You know, Jacob Phillis was our SEC player
(57:58):
of the year. I thought those guys played really well,
along with you know, obviously Devin White and Grindy Williams
and short Launch. All Right, you mentioned not gonna have
another Troy this year. Other than saying, hey, we can't
overlook them like we overlook Troy, anything else you're doing
to not overlook a Southeastern. We want to treat every
poll at the same. We want to practice the same,
(58:18):
want to prepare the same, just like we did last week.
I thought our preparation against Miami was fantastic. We felt
good going into the game. I want to feel the
same way. And it starts today. It starts with me
as the leader, and our team is gonna get it.
But not crazy to think that you're gonna use a
lot of your hopefully use a lot of your depth
in the second half with the short weekend with Auburn
and the rise, and that's that's not That's not a
(58:39):
crazy expectation to have, is it. Oh, you know, we
have a plan, and we have a plan every week.
You know, we talk about what if this happened, what
if this happened, And obviously we have a plan. If
we can play the young guys we will, but I
know the southeastn Weisiana is gonna come in and give
us our best shot. We have to take it and
give it to them, and let's see what happens. Have
you seen the fake Nike meme of you? Have you?
(59:00):
Have you seen that yet? Has anybody shown that to you? No,
because because Nike's the Nike has their new saying is
believe in something even if it costs you everything. So somebody,
so somebody put your picture, big smile on your faces,
says believe in something even if it and it's like
intel unintelligible, and then it says, go tigers at the end.
You haven't seen that yet? No, I won't see. It's great,
(59:24):
I'm sure. But you have fun with it, don't you. Yeah,
it's good. It's all fun. And listen, I love being
the coaching shoe. College football is fun. I love the fans.
There are a lot of great things about college football.
You know, everybody has their team, everybody has fun with it.
That's what makes college football the best. Um, do you
think you have a championship caliber team? We'll see. You know,
(59:45):
we gotta take this one one game at a time.
You know, we we played U eleven new starts. These
guys have to gel I will, I will schedule down.
The roads will get very tough. It's very competitive, messyc
we have to get better each week. Coach listen, wish
you the best look in Southeastern this week and of
course uh next weekend man Auburn Alabama. That one is
gonna be everybody's hair is gonna be on fire. Thanks
(01:00:06):
so much for joining us. Thank you guys. That's coach
at Origern head coach l s U. Johnnius on the
Doug Gottlive Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Let's get
you over to Dan Buyer find out what else is
going on the world sports anyway a lot in the NFL.
We started in Seattle where earld Thomas ended his holdout
and reported to the team today. Thomas had asked for
(01:00:27):
a new contract, and get that he had asked for
a trade as well. Didn't get that, but he's still
going to report. In advance of the Seahawks games Sunday
against the Denver Broncos, there are multiple reports saying that
the Cowboys did offer the Seahawks a second round pick
for Thomas's services, which was thought to be the asking
price all along. However, reports say that the Seahawks declined
that offer, and then the Cowboys ended up withdrawing their
(01:00:49):
second round pick and reportedly are no longer interested in Thomas.
There was more Seahawks news. Linebacker kJ Wright not gonna
go Sunday against Denver because of injury. That means rookie
linebacker Shakim Griffin will start Sunday against the Denver Broncos.
Griffin the American Conference Player of the Year last year
out of UCF and yes, the linebacker with one hand.
(01:01:11):
He will get the start against the Broncos. Steelers running
back Leviyan Bell remains a hold up. His agent says
that it could continue into the regular season. While not
unveiling their plans, agent Adisa Bakari alluded to Sirius Sex
m NFL Radio that they're trying to prevent the Steelers
from overusing Bell this season. Not obviously want to discuss
our plan publicly, But you're Kevin Colbert, you're Mike Tomlin,
(01:01:34):
and you possibly have a once in a generation player
for one more season. What would your plan be? Giants,
Ted nev and Ingram clear concussion protocol will play Sunday
in their opener against Jacksonville. Some baseball news. Red Sox
beat the Braves today nine eight. Boston drilt seven one
heading into the top of the eighth inning where they
scored six runs and then we're down eight seven into
(01:01:55):
the ninth when Brandon Phillips in a two runs shot
to win it for Boston Indian style. The Royals today
three to one, and finally dug the European Ryder Cup
team has been rounded out. Ian Poultzer, Henrik Stenson, Paul Casey,
and Sergio Garcia named this captain's picks for the European squad.
Back to you, m hmm, this is the Dug outlive
(01:02:16):
show here on Fox Sports Radio. Yeah, it's fascinating to see,
uh some uh, some fissures within the Pittsburgh Steelers, as
we mentioned a couple of different linemen speaking out about
Levan Bell, like, look, just tell us when you're gonna
show up or if you're gonna show up. Otherwise you know,
we'll just expect it to not be here. So that's interesting. Um,
(01:02:40):
and Ben Roethlisberger has even come out and uh and
had some less than super positive things to say about
about Levi on Bell. We're a very good offense. You know,
football's ultimate team sport. One person doesn't make or break you,
so um, you know, I'd like to say that that
the are more more important than any skill position player,
(01:03:03):
including myself on this on this team, so um you know,
we're more than this often is more than just one guy.
I would guess that Ben knows that he's kind of um,
he's kind of navigating some some turbulent waters there, right.
He just happened to mention the lineman by name, and
(01:03:23):
the lineman of the same people that have come out
and said, hey, levy On, stop having your agents speak
for you, tell us if you're gonna be here, and
another one saying he's he's all about himself. I'm guessing
that Ben's like, dude, I've heard it. The lineman are mad,
they're picked. They know we're close and you're holding out.
They want to win. They know if we win, everybody
(01:03:43):
gets paid. End of story. So I kind of think
that's what it's like for Ben because Ben didn't say
because he started by giving the cliche, Hey, ultimate team sport,
and that's what every football guy says, ultimate team sport,
and it is ultimate team support. Let's not undervalue. Lebian
(01:04:04):
Bell is a very good player, catches it runs it
has a unique style, but also part of that unique style,
And this is the same with Ben Rothberg. Ben Rothburger
holds the ball a little bit longer than other people,
and lebian Bell, you gotta hold your block a little
bit longer for him too, because you know how he
kind of hesitates once he gets to the line of
scrimmage to keep his eyes up. None of that's easy
(01:04:25):
for alignment. So I would guess that Ben Ben's one
of these guys. He says well, always says what he
says for a reason. And the reason he said what
he said the way he said mentioned the offensive lineman
was he knows Lineman or Piste they are hot. They're hot.
(01:04:53):
Do you guys see that Baker Mayfield was officially named
the backup quarterback in Cleveland. This was to be expect it, right,
I mean, this was to be expected. But the idea
that he's earned the backup spots the number one overall
pick I would contend to you that Cleveland I didn't
want to take a quarterback number one overall, but it
(01:05:14):
had to take a quarterback number one overall. That makes sense.
When you pass on Carson Wentz and Carson Wentz becomes
a star. You know, pass on Carson Wentz and Carson
Wentz becomes a star. When you passed on quarterbacks in
the past and you made faulty decisions and you have
(01:05:35):
the number one overall pick and you need a quarterback,
you take a quarterback that's like and I just kind
of think they outsmart themselves. I think they wanted Josh
Allen because of his arm and that Josh Allen's the
type of arm that usually works in the a f
C North. Think about it, the guys that have worked
in the a f C North. Joe Flacco won a
(01:05:57):
Super Bowl, huge army, is a great quarterback now, huge arm,
Ben Rolisberger very good quarterback, massive body, massive arm. Even
Carson Palmer who was wildly successful for the knee injury
and ultimately wanting to get out of Cincinnati. Huge guy,
huge arm. And so I think in the trying to
(01:06:18):
find a guy who's like other guys that have been
successful in those places, Josh Allen Fittett. The problem is, boy,
Josh Allen's the project and you couldn't take Josh Allen
number one overall and then you had Sam Donald or
Baker Mayfield. And if you've met Baker Mayfield, you know
there's an energy about him. There's something about him that
(01:06:39):
you just like that you're drawn to. There's a difference
between him and Baker Mayfield. I mean, excuse me, there's
uh Baker Mayfield has is people are drawn to him too,
but people try and make Baker into Johnny Manzel and
he's not Menzel. When he came out was first he was.
(01:07:02):
He was even smaller than Baker Bayfield. Baker's not big,
but Manzel really kind of slight shoulders, just kind of
a little dude. But he also kind of had a
way about him, which there was a hefty amount of
ego there, but it was more about him than it
was about winning or about the team or about football.
Whereas Baker is a classic kind of football guy and
(01:07:25):
a football nerd, and where Menzel didn't study, didn't watch tape,
wasn't a savant in terms of breaking down defense, Mayfield is.
And players realized that like that Donald's got kind of
the awe shocks things sort of down, but also it's
very bright, just doesn't have the amount of of data
(01:07:47):
from having played as much as a Baker Mayfield. So
I think they kind of outsmarted themselves and they convinced
themselves that Baker Mayfield was kind of like a Brett
Farve type. And John Dorsey was around in Green Bay
with with Brett far And so that's what he thinks
he got. It's not surprised that Tyrod Taylor to Rod Taylor,
(01:08:08):
whate te Taylor. It's not surprising that he's the starting quarterback.
He should be. He's better, he's more refined. He went
to the playoffs last year, he played in three places.
Now like he's seeing some battles. But the idea that
they just now named Baker the backup tells you confirms
to you what I've been told from people in Cleveland,
(01:08:28):
which is it ain't close. It's not close, not close
between the two, because if it was close, you start
the number one overall pick or you think about working
in the number all one overall pick. But he ain't
there yet, ain't there yet at all? Music, what's going
(01:08:54):
on back there? You just you seemed completely out of
sorts about something. We are dealing with some computer issues yourself,
and I okay, well that's okay. It's gonna be okay,
it's very frustrating to get work done when you don't
have a computer. Well, listen to the work that has
to be done is right here, me talking to you
and talking to Rama's Well I wish, I wish that
(01:09:16):
was all of the work I had to get done. Yeah.
I don't see anything else as being important in this world.
All right, here's another one. De Castro says, just sit
out the whole year. Then, man, the offensive line has
turned on Levy on Bell. This went from hey man,
(01:09:38):
we're all just out there trying to help our guy,
hope he gets paid to good riddens. M hmm, that's amazing.
I mean, like all of these got just but look
the idea. Here's where an agent um like it's that's
just a misstep by an agent. And if I'm Avian Bell,
(01:10:00):
I I need to be on the phone and to
be texting these guys like, yo, that was my agent.
That's not me. But I'm guessing that they know this
is Levan Bell, but you can't say. They can't say, well,
you know, maybe we'll just wait till week ten. So
he saves his body, Yeah, what about our bodies? That
is a that is an all time backfire, all time backfire.
(01:10:22):
It seems like in this situation, Aaron Donald got paid,
Khalil Mack ended up getting traded then got paid, but
Odell Beckham was the one who ended up showing up
for camp and then he eventually got paid to Uh,
it looks like Levyan Bell in this situation is I mean,
maybe he's just mentally checked out from being a Steeler
(01:10:44):
and that's why he's letting his agent do this, or
I mean, there could be a number of things. What
do you think, buyer you want to get on this? Yeah,
it's it's different because it's the franchise tag. Like like
Odell Beckham Jr. Was entering the final year of his
content tracked, so this is the same thing. But it's
but it's it's it's not for the sense of if
(01:11:06):
he reports he's going to get a new deal, like,
he's not going to get a new deal. They can't
give him a long term deal. It's either he signs
the one year tender and then ends up playing. I
just I just think this shows you who who they
think Levian Bell is. They don't they're not that they
think they think that he's about Levian Bell. That's that's
(01:11:28):
that's what it is. Well, this is here's another I've
never heard of this. Have you ever, like by you
been doing this over a decade. I've been doing this
fifteen years. Uh you know Ramo has you've been doing
this forever. Music just got a high school. So you know,
he's he's not his experience in this. I've never seen this.
He's not. Here's a guy who's going to Everyone knows
(01:11:48):
he's going to show up at some point time this year. Right,
He's not gonna hold out the whole year. And and
I've never seen a guy who's holding out let alone
a running back and offensive linemanre like, dude, just fine,
just sit out the whole or then no one says
that tells you there's something off between Levian Bell and
the offensive line. Yeah, yeah, yes, I agree with that.
Like we have seen Vincent Jackson held out, you know,
(01:12:10):
years back with the yeah that Joey Galloway did with
the Seahawks years back and didn't report until he ended
up having to um mid season. But what I think
is going to be interesting is if the Steelers, what
what did they offer him? It was like twenty it
was fifteen million or it was whatever, whatever the number is,
(01:12:30):
he's gonna be losing a million dollars per game that
he doesn't report or sign this franchise tag, which is
basically about what he's gonna get. If it's fourteen and
a half million dollars sixteen games schedule, just say it's
a million dollars per game? How much is he forfeiting
by not playing that he maybe would have, you know
what I'm saying, Like, if you want to, but if
(01:12:51):
they find him, by the way, that's that's a big question.
And like if you're Pittsburgh, you're like, hey, we're not
gonna have him next year, you know, and we will
find him. I just think numbers, you know, numbers are numbers.
And if you start like saying like I don't want
this fourteen you know, I don't want seven million of
this fourteen million dollars that I'm supposed to get, well,
if the initial contract was the difference of seven million dollars,
(01:13:13):
then you're kind of like, well, I just lost that already,
even if I would get what I wanted, already lost
seven million dollars by not playing under this contract number. Okay,
So here's the Here's the more important question. What happens Sunday? Like,
do we give Cleveland legit shot here? I kind of do?
Am I crazy to go? Like? I kind of think
Cleveland's got a shot here? Yeah, Remember they played a
(01:13:35):
somewhat close game at the start of last year. It
was it was, it was a pretty close game. I
mean again, like Cleveland's defensive line looks legit. Um, Josh
corn is gonna play, He's not gonna start. So you
got a talented wide wide receiving corps, you got some
running backs back there. I mean they're not a perfect team.
To right, Taylor's not bad, Like, don't you give him
(01:13:56):
a legit shot? It's playing at home in Cleveland. I
think Vegas only has it at like four four early
lean there, Ramos, what are you thinking Steelers Brown's in
Cleveland one o'clock start? Well, I mean, the Steelers look
like they're not in a good mood right now, so
(01:14:17):
maybe they want to prove something that they can win
without Levyan balls. I'll come with the Steelers Johnny Cash music,
are you thinking, like, does this make you think the
Cleveland Like can you imagine the insult added to injury?
If your Pittsburgh, who thinks, hey, we're a catch rule
away from going to a super Bowl. Last year, you
(01:14:38):
get lit up by Blake Bortles, you come back your
first game out, and you're you're the team that loses
to the Brown I go with John, I still think
the Steelers will win here. Oh there's I don't think
there's any any question that in your right mind. But like,
this is a team that does not this. They put
the disc in disgruntled. Do you think in there, buyer?
(01:15:01):
I like Cleveland in this spot. Yeah, I'm I'm tempted
to take I'm tempted to take Cleveland. I don't know.
I might. We'll have our picks on, we'll have to
make some We'll always make a Thursday pick college and Pro,
and then we'll have our But I am tempted to think.
This is fascinating stuff on how quickly everybody else has
shown up in camp, and Levyan Bell is like, Noah,
(01:15:22):
I might wait till week ten. And he doesn't say it.
He has his agents said, which, look you can you
can trot out there and go like, hey, that's my agent.
He was just he was just talking out his wrecked um.
You know this is me, I'm gonna show up. I
love my teammates. But when offensive linemen are like, maybe
you don't show up the whole year, I've never heard
(01:15:44):
that before. Ever. That is not That's the talk of
a team that's done with the dude. Done with the dude.
Colin Cowhard loves Dak Prescott, or does he? He'll explain next.

Chicago's head coach and Eagle legendary great Brian Westbrook next
hour and get you ready for Thursday night football and
(01:16:48):
point out why I don't get about everybody having an
issue with Mike Tomlin. Well, here's Colin talking about Doc
and the Cowboys. The reason I have the Cowboys now
at five hundred. I like him, but there's a reason
I haven't at five hundred. It's not about who's in
the building, it's about who's out of the building. I
have a basic rule predicting NFL games. If I don't
(01:17:11):
have a Pro Bowl quarterback, and I like Dak, and
he's about fifteen best quarterback in the league today, and
I'm facing multiple Pro Bowl quarterbacks who are better than
my current quarterback, I'm not going to be a dominating team.
Dallas's biggest problem is the quarterbacks they face. They will
face in eleven games a quarterback that's better than Dak
(01:17:35):
and seen largely as a Pro Bowl quarterback Carson Wentz twice,
Russell Wilson, Cam Matt, Ryan Breese, Matt Stafford, Andrew Luck,
Deshaun Watson, Alex Smith two times. Again. I like Dak
much higher on deck than everybody else I have, you know,
middle of the pack, but I like him. I think
he's a big quarterback. He's a franchise guy. You're not
gonna be a dominating team facing those quarterbacks. Who is it?
(01:18:00):
Was it trendal first said, you're either a tractor or no,
it's a Dana Jeremiah right, either a track, you're the
truck or a trailer. Right. And if you're a truck,
you can pull everybody to greater heights of your trailer.
You can kind of be along for the ride. And
that's essentially my feelings about Dak are he's more of
a trailer. You know. If they have a big time
(01:18:21):
wide receiver, a good tight end, if they have a
dominant running game, he's fine. But look at look at
the wide receiving corps. There's a reason they kept four
tight ends, right, Like the old expression is, if you've
got two quarterbacks, you don't have one. If you got
four tight ends, you probably don't have one either. Four
tight ends and none of you could pick out of
a lineup. And as much as Jason Witten had lost
(01:18:43):
a step or two, the fact is that he was
still probably better than anybody they have on that roster remaining.
And look, Dak, what Dac does is he's good. He's
a good, solid dude. He's a lot writer than anyone
gave him credit out of Mississippi State. But he's not
(01:19:04):
crazy accurate. He's not throw you open. He's not a truck.
He's a trailer. And if if perfectly constituted, that offensive
line is awesome. But Travis Frederick is not healthy, he
announced Dutch Tyrn Smith does have a back issue. And
though Zekie Elliott is awesome, every running backs made better
(01:19:27):
with the dominant offensive line and with a wide receiver
that you have to double, and there's not one that
you definitely have to double every time of the line
of scrimmage. The bigger issue, though, is what Collin's not saying.
There's a reason guys are not as high on Doc
as even Colin is on deck. I Listeddac one of
the ten worst starting quarterbacks, not that aren't rookies. My
(01:19:50):
logic behind it is we've seen when he doesn't have Zeke,
he wasn't effective last year. Now you add Zeke, but
you take away des he take away Witton. Let's see
how good he is now. Nick Wright said this about
the Rams this season. I'm not worried about the pressure
on Donald. The pressure on the Rams is real. Though
(01:20:13):
the honeymoon can end quickly for a new coach for
a young quarterback, and when you have the type of
off season they had, and when you go against some
conventional NFL wisdom as far as not just paying your
running back early, not just paying a defensive player twenty
two million dollars a year. But we don't care what
the locker room chemistry is. A tired and Marcus Peterson
(01:20:34):
and in Dominican sue bring them all in here. And
when the clock is ticking on that Jared Golf rookie contract, Oh,
the pressure is on them for real. Now we'll talk
about the pressure on Pittsburgh get it done. This. No, no,
this is a team that if they are not eleven
twelve wins and at the very least in the second
weekend of the NFL playoffs, we're gonna look at this
(01:20:54):
and say this was a disappointing season and an enormous
missed opportunity. Uh. I don't know if I would say
miss missed opportunity. I mean, like, again, let's see how
the season goes. But I do think there is a
as much as there's a uh a strong possibility maybe
even likelihood of a hit of a second straight playoff appearance,
(01:21:14):
considering the Nines are still building, Seattle's back down to
Earth and the Rams and then the Cardinals are rebuilding.
The rest of their schedule is incredibly difficult. No one
knows how good Jared Goff is. And this is a
team that lost at home to a dome team in
the Falcons in their lone playoff game last season. So
the expectations are through the roof. They make the playoffs.
(01:21:36):
I don't think it's wildly to make the playoffs, it's
all that really matters, and then see what happens. But
but the bigger and point, the bigger point that I
think Nick was kind of getting to is they're taking
a lot of risk there and next year they're going
to have to be in rebuild or or reboot mode
and try and figure out what to do with all
these guys with expiring contracts. If they get to next
(01:21:57):
year without the thing burning up, because as they have
so much, so many potential not current, but potential issues there.
Ramo's your Rams fan, your level of faith in this team.
I take everything with a great assault. They have a
tough schedule. I think they'll play well, that's right. I
definitely think they'll win the West n f C West.
(01:22:18):
I think they're the best team in the NFC West. Oh.
I think the the best team on paper, best team
in the NFC West. I don't think there's there's any
question at Raiders. It helps that the Raiders don't don't
appear to be at Raiders. Cardinals at home. Then the
battle against the Chargers. Then let's take a list of
these three teams in a row. Charged at home, Vikings
at home at Seahawks. Remember they smashed the Seahawks on
(01:22:40):
the road, smashed them last year at the Broncos at
the night. They got a weird schedule where they got
three at home in a road, then three in a
row on the road, concluding in the Forts, they do
they get the Packers at home instead of the road.
They go to Seattle, they get the Chiefs, but they
get him at home. They get the Eagles, but they
get him at home. So most of their difficult games
(01:23:02):
out of division are at home. Vikings, Chargers, Saints, Chiefs, Packers,
Eagles all at home. Saints are the only one on
the road. Um, what's it like to win? And then
no one wants to play you? You'll find out next

or so from the NFL kicking off? NFL kicking off?
You know, I hate doing I hate the whole idea
of tell me who's gonna win bow? You get that
in basketball to when you cover basketball CA you find
a four teams like, m hmmm. Here's the problem with
(01:24:14):
me giving you my final four teams. They might all
end up in the same bracket in the n c
A tournament. So if I if you get my final
four teams, will sound like an idiot. I tell you
who I think four or five best teams are. Like
I look at the NFL and I think the Vikings
are a playoff team, the Packers if Aaron Rodgers healthy
(01:24:35):
playoff team, Um, I think the Eagles, but I don't
know I I'm the Eagles. I have a lot of
questions about because they are going to be the hunt Dead,
not the Hunter, and I think they're far better when
Carson Wentz comes back. Then they are right now and
they don't have all Sean Jeffrey in addition to deal
with the Nick Foles, and they're they're the hunt hunt Dead,
(01:24:59):
not the Hunter. Um. Love the Falcons, Love the Falcons,
like the Saints, like the Panthers, and then I like
the Rams. Those the NFC teams a f C Patriots,
Steelers even without Levyan Bell, kind of feels they're united
(01:25:21):
right now and being pissed at at Levan Bell, Chargers,
Jaguars because Jaguars just got dudes Um and probably the
Ravens probably. And then I've I've fascinated by the whole
Chiefs thing because I think they're gonna put up some points.
I don't think their defense is very good, but it's
gonna be an offensive driven league. So who's gonna win
(01:25:44):
the Super Bowl? Like I don't know, it feels like
new eng littill be there, even though he couldn't pick
their wide receivers out of the lineup. The cool thing
about the NFL is they try and balance some things
out by having the first, second, third, fourth place schedules.
Right college football, we just concluded a weekend to which
we didn't have a ton of dream matchups, but you know,
(01:26:07):
Louisville got a shout at Alabama on neutral field, Miami
takes on l s U. We had we we did
have some conference games like von Tech goes in and
Beach Florida State, but you had some teams get opportunities.
College basketball is always fascinating to me. This is the
magic of scheduling. Um. Yesterday I read at CBS sports
(01:26:31):
dot Com that Porter Moser's LOYALA team could not secure
any real high majors in in in home and home games,
So we thought we'd reach out to the head coach
of the Loyal Ramblers. Of course, went to the Final four,
and man they were might have been the second best
team there. Porter Moser joins us in the Doug Gotlips
Show on Fox Sports Radio. Porter, before I get to
(01:26:54):
the scheduling thing, I want to ask you about the
idea of being the hunt dead instead of the hunter.
Like none of your kids had had achieved any sort
of success. You, even as a head coach, hadn't seen
that kind of success. How do you change your preparation
knowing that it's completely different now every gym you show
up in when loyal is across the front of their chest.
You know, Doug, it's a great Uh, it's a great
(01:27:14):
question because I've been obsessed with that since probably April.
Of my mind has gone to that of, you know,
how are we going to get better? And just studying
teams that that have done it, you know that have
followed a great season with another great season, and there's
a there's a handful of things, you know of the
(01:27:35):
mentality of getting better winning the now in the off season.
I tell you, I don't know if you've watched the
training day with the training camp with Alabama, and we
showed the episode two with our guys. Here is Alabama
winning the national championship and they bring in Kobe Bryant
to talk to the guys. They bring in, they spent
(01:27:56):
their their whole mentality was about being better, and that's
what we've kind of dressed our guys with. You know,
we want to stay the hunter. I know, I know
the reality is you know that being the hunted and
a little Joe Madden embraced the target. Um, but one
of the things that we weren't playing Monday night. We
didn't finish, we didn't end the year with a win.
(01:28:17):
You know, we've we've we've got to stay chasing and
stay you know greatness got no finish line, and we've
got to We've been all summer long talking about no entitlement,
stay being chasing. And it's more of a mindset we've
had with our guys rather than defending center when we've
got to defend everything. And that's just kind of such
backward thinking on your heels. Um, I want to get
to the d now with the scheduling now, look, um,
(01:28:39):
full disclosure, I don't think it's terribly realistic to think
you're gonna get a bunch of home and homes right like, Um,
it just it just is. And and for people who
don't understand the sport, like look the Missouri Valley, you've
been a one or now a two, bit you can
be a one or a two big League most years.
So some of it is the other teams in the league,
but some of it is just the idea of teams
(01:29:00):
at your level. No one's gonna come and play at
your place. So when when you read it, hey, they
can't get anybody to play anybody, was it. We couldn't
get anybody at home at home, so we couldn't even
get two for ones and trying to play people. Yeah,
you know, the one thing, especially with the conference three,
the conference going to twenty games has been been the kicker,
you know, because I've had coaching friends just tell me like, hey,
(01:29:20):
we got twenty conference games, we got a challenge with
another high major conference. We've got an MTE We're allowed
twenty seven games and we're gonna have twenty four twenty
five of them against really good teams. And we and
they say, we simply just don't have to or don't
need to. We got enough opportunities. So that's kind of
been what told me. Yeah, it's just and even the
(01:29:40):
buy games were becoming hard. You know, we'd say, all right, fine, well,
well you know you we'll see on the message board
that that you know, there's that scheduling message board, and
they'll say, well, we're looking to buy a team, and
then we'll we'll call, and then that they're not interested. Um,
and nobody wants to buy a loss right Like you're
you're in that you're in that weird Um, weird place
(01:30:02):
to where people don't want to play at a home
and home and you're not necessarily a big enough name
on a neutral right, and the Neutrals are kind of
reserved for being set up by kind of the TV
people whatever, and yet you're way too good to play
somebody in a like we want to buy a game,
we want to buy a win. We need to win
a game by forty. We need to get our freshman
(01:30:23):
in right, So you're kind of in that weird spot. No,
it is, it is, and we tried, I mean since
the final four, our efforts and I hope this gets
you know, UM comes to the conversation in March, is
what was our efforts? I mean, we were in a
tournament from a year and a half ago. We bought
out of that tournament to get into a better tournament,
(01:30:44):
play in Richmond in Boston College. It was a better tournament.
We UM did a home and home with St. Joe's
and we're starting on the road. You know, we're gonna
play St. Joe's the Polestro. We've got to buy a team.
We bought Fermin Ferman won twenty three games last year.
We didn't buy a three fifty team. We bought a
team that won twenty three games. We we did get bought.
We're playing in Maryland. We're getting bought to go out there.
(01:31:06):
But I was really you know, excited those guys we
were to play. But our efforts since Ball State we
just did a home at home with Ball State, everyone
kind of knows Ball States could be really good. They
have two high major transfers sitting out. They got everybody back.
They beat Notre Dame in the road last year. So
my efforts, I'm trying my tail off, but it is
it's you get that with the opportunities and those conferences
(01:31:27):
go to twenty games, it shrinks the opportunities. But I'll
say this dog the thing that I'm I'm excited about.
You know, I'm speaking on both sides of mouth because
the one hand, I'm excited. The other hand, it's gonna
be tough, but the valley is going to be better
than it's been in a long time. You know, you
look at the top four teams. Last year, we finished first.
We got a good trunk back. Illinois or Southern Aois
(01:31:49):
finished second. They got all five starters back. Illinois State
finished third. They have all five starters back and Bradley
finished sports and they have seven other top eight back.
So hopefully we're gonna have some games in our league
that are gonna be top fifty, top seventy five quad
one games. Yeah, but do you need those teams to
do well out of conference? Right? Like that's the whole
And you're right and and and will anybody play them
(01:32:10):
except for in uh less than advantageous situations? You know,
it's like, all right, you have one kid get hurt,
or you're playing in a road game, he gets screwed
in the call. Uh last thing I wanted to ask you,
They've they've changed. You've eliminated the r p I and
they've added the net the N E t UM And
I know we haven't even allowed a season to play out,
(01:32:32):
let alone five seasons to play out to understand how
the calculations changed. But based on what you've read, do
you like the change? You know? I really got a
wait to see it plays out. I'll be honest with you.
I don't want to you know, going, but I'll say
this about it, Doug. On paper, it sounds like it's
gonna help us because we've had high RPIs in our
(01:32:54):
league and not got in Illinois State a year ago.
We had a high RPI this year that on that
people were said it and we were people said we
might not get in. So on paper, yes, because I
was talking um to Matt Loorlander when he did the
article with me, you know there's offensive the efficiency is
going to be factored in. Well, if it's gonna be
factored in, that helped us. We were like, you know,
(01:33:17):
we were top fifteen or eighteen, and defensive efficiency we were,
and we were way up there, and off we were
third or second in field goal percentage and so our
efficiencies on both ends were good. And so I don't
I just kind of wait and seeing how it all
plays out. But um, I'm hoping that it helps us
rather than hurts us. So I grew up in Surely
(01:33:38):
the RPI surely hasn't helped. What's what's fascinating about what's
happening in college basketball for people who aren't following with
coaches saying a lot of these conferences are going to
twenty conference games, which I think is actually really smart.
Uh twofold one. It's actually copying something that the Valley
did a long time ago. You guys are playing more
league games than everybody else, So it he you know,
(01:34:00):
it more against each other artificially kind of inflates the
RPI number if your league's pretty good. So I actually
think that's a genius idea. But also, look, people are
having trouble filling up their gyms, and you're more likely
to fill up your gym against the conference foe than
you are a non conference poll. Hell, I would be
fine if the Big Ten if they played well six,
(01:34:21):
right would they be? Because they have fourteen teams, so
it's thirteen so twenty like play everybody twice, have a
truely It would be an arduous schedule, but at least
you have a true league champion, and I think the
gyms would be fuller. I'd rather have that than even
have a Big Ten tournament. I know that won't happen,
but so that's that's one of the things that's causing it. Um. Okay,
so I grew up in Tustin, California. That's only important
for this one reason. Um, do you know who the
(01:34:43):
most famous Tustin high school lum to ever play for
the Chicago Cubs is? Oh? Wow, you want to cut
you switch gears on me? My favorite team Um more
hits than anybody in the nineties, and it was actually
a really, really good basketball player, Ryan Samberg, Mark, don't
(01:35:07):
tell me, don't tell me Mark, Mark Grace. Sorry, yeah, okay.
So here's why it's important. So every when I was
in high school, every day we'd sneak out and we
go to Chicago Joe's Pizza, and of course, you know
this is like noon, which meant day baseball at Wrigley,
(01:35:28):
and we'd watch a couple of things of Mark Grace
playing baseball. Coke uh, two slices pizza and coke was
two dollars and fifty cents. And we'd see, you know, Harry,
carry how on to everybody, and you're gonna sing, take
me out to the ball game. I am. I did
it on opening days. I've done it four times. I'm
doing it again. September is loyala knight at Wrigley. But
(01:35:51):
I'm telling you, dog, I grew up a dire coachman.
I mean I did it. Our team was doing. We
did throughout the first pitch ester Geane and I and
our team, and then I did with Marcus down. We
did this opening day seventh and East stretch Um and
we're doing it again. The seven they did, somebody cancel?
How do you get all these all these take me
out to the ball games and seventh day stretches? Well
(01:36:11):
I was, I was three and oh up until they
like they want to have Chicago people do it and
I'm from here and I'm coaching it, like, oh so
I've done it three times prior to opening day and
an opening day was our first loss, or we actually
was reined out the first day. We did the second day,
and uh so it's just, you know, it's it's been
a it's been a really fun deal to do it.
It's it's it's kind of crazy, dog you're out of
(01:36:33):
your element when thirty seven thousand or forty thousand people
look up at you're about to sing. But it's a
ton of fun. It says, you can't get worse than
coach Dicka did or Ozzy Osby Osborne is the worst.
Have you seen Ozzy Osbourne? Yes, that's the worst. And
uh so you can't you can't go backwards, you only
can go up. So you do you do it as
you do, you do your hairy impression. Do you try
(01:36:55):
and sing it? Like what do you do? Oh? I
I belt it out, I sing it as myself. I
can't do Harry. I'm not doing Harry. I don't want
to heard you doing yourself. It's fun. You just get
up there and you rip it out there they're the
fans are singing with you. Now there there there there
there there, you know, ten sheets in the wind themselves
(01:37:16):
and there they don't know if you're onto. It's kind
of fun with it, toknd of fun with it. Coach,
best of luck, who with the upcome and say, well,
we'll catch up. We'll do the All Ball podcast. We'll
we'll dig more into what this offseason has been like.
But I appreciate you joinous and giving us the rundown
on the difficulties sched You are playing Maryland, you are
playing Virginia Tech in a tournament, so there are some
scalps to be uh wait bad at home Nevada St. Joe's.
(01:37:38):
So we do have a good, good, good schedule. I
can't wait to see you guys and sister Jean this
upcoming season. Thanks for joining us. Thanks appreciate it. All right,
that's that's the head coach of Loyola. He didn't know
did did you know the answer that trivia question, what
about you, Dan, Dan Buyer's a he's a Brewer fan,
and people here's what people forget. Used to not be
hatred between Brewers and Cups because Brewers used to be
(01:38:00):
an American League team, right, Yeah, they didn't like the
White Sox. Yeah, they don't like. They didn't like didn't
like the White Sox. Did you know the Marquis trivi questions?
I knew it just because you had tricked this on that.
I'm not tricked this, but quiz this on that. Did
you like to cut like? Did everybody in the Midwest
like the Cubs or did you not like? It? Felt?
It felt like there used to be before the Brewers
work were National League. It used to be either like
(01:38:20):
the cards of the Cubs. If you were somewhere outside
of Chicago and St. Louis, yeah, very And there were
a lot of lot of Cub fans even even when
the Brewers were in the a L and n L.
There was that divide when the Cubs were in the NL.
A lot of a lot of Cubs fans growing up.
Here's what I was saying, Here's what I was thinking.
I was watching the Notre Dame game, the other night,
and I was like, how many people who care about
sports now realized Notre Dame used to not have lights.
(01:38:42):
It's like the same percentage people remember the Cubs forever
didn't have lights. Yes, their first game was rained out.
When they did, they didn't have like we had lights,
we didn't know the Dome did not out of dome.
What can we expect from the defending Super Bowl champions?
I'll last. Two time All Pro running back and Eagle
Hall of Famer Brian Westbrook joins us next. Be sure

Jacob tweeted us, Hey, Perdue just got lights. I didn't
(01:39:24):
know Perdue didn't have lights. No, I mean, it's like amazing.
It's like one of those things like yeah, you know,
and like I watched my own modern Ocloma state play
this past Thursday week ago. On Thursday right, and they
had this huge, brand new jumbo tron which adds to
the other two other jumbo tron's, and they got another
one and the other one. You're like, wow, it's a
great stay, Like you have no idea. When I went
(01:39:44):
to school there, it was like, you know, when I've
arrived on campus up until two thousand when I left,
they called the Oklahoma fans called the Rustoleum Bowl, right
like they had. It was kind of two classic uh
sides of stands, you know where you had and seating
and people had to kind of bring their own backs
for chairs, and there was rust on the girders and
(01:40:05):
you could see the girders. So I do uh, please
tune into the All Ball podcast, which j Billis and
I talked last week. It's a two part series. This
week it's more about uh. There's some on college athletics,
his belief and that players should be paid above for
the use of their name and likeness. I do not,
but like one of the things that's lost is all
(01:40:25):
this money that's being made is being reinvested into the university.
It had been allowed to deteriorate for years. All right,
let's get back to football, shall We were twenty four
hours from kickoff another NFL season. What do we talk
to a guy who knows what it's like to be
an Eagle, knows what it's like to be an Eagle
coming off a Super Bowl. Brian westbrooks our guest. He's
(01:40:45):
a Hall of an Eagles Hall of Famer. He joins
us here on the on the Doug Gotlip Show on
Fox Sports Radio, and UM, I'm just I'm wondering, Brian,
It's like, you know, obviously you got to play and
play in a Super Bowl. They played and won a
(01:41:06):
Super Bowl. What do you think those emotions will be
like when they take the field tomorrow night? You know what,
I'm still gonna be very excited. I was excited for
the organization, of course, for the players that won the
Super Bowl last year, the revenge that we were able
to to get against the Patriots who beat us in
two thousands and fourth. But probably most importantly, I was
(01:41:27):
excited for the fans of the Philadelphia Eagles that have
been passionate, loyal, respectful throughout, you know, so long while
we kind of suffered without a Super Bowl trophy. I'm
so excited for those guys. I was excited for them
UH in Minnesota. I was excited for the fans and
the players and organization when we came back and had
(01:41:48):
the parade in Philadelphia, and I'm gonna be super excited
tomorrow night when they unveiled that banner UH in Lincoln
Financial Field, two team, two times first Team All Pro
Brian Westbrook our guests on the Doug Outlive show here
on Sports Right, Yo, one of the things you guys
are able to do is you guys are consistently ridiculously competitive, right, Like,
you guys are always kind of in the mix. But
(01:42:10):
there's part of it is you came up short, so
you're still hungry. How do you think this team deals
with the fact that they've already accomplished that incredible task,
They've already proved people wrong, and yet they have to
kind of recreate that hunger. You're right, I mean, it's
just so hard to repeat as Super Bowl champions. You
go from um the hunter to the hunted and everyone
(01:42:31):
is going to give you your best shot. One of
the things that the Eagles did last year is that
they kind of played on the whole motto of the
underdogar everyone. No one was giving them the respect that
they deserved as being a very good football team, and
I think this year, as they come back, you certainly
have to find some type of hunger. But not that
it's easier or will be easier season. But when you're
(01:42:54):
bringing back a quarterback that didn't participate, uh in that
Super Bowl, that put up a whole bunch of touchdown
thirty plus touchdowns last year, the m VP candidate before
he got injured. You're bringing back Jason Peters, a left
tackle who certainly has the credentials to be a Hall
of Famer when he hangs his cleats up. Darrence bros
One of the best running backs in the NFL over
(01:43:16):
the last ten fifteen years. When you bring back that
type of talent to a team that won the Super
Bowl last year, I think that ramps up the hunger
because those guys want to go out not only win
another Super Bowl for the organization, but be on the
field while they win their Super Bowl for the organization.
And I think, uh, those guys will have to leave
the charge as far as the hunger for the game,
(01:43:37):
the hunger for the Super Bowl for this organizations team.
Doug gotlip Show Fox Sport Treaty. That's the voice of
Brian Westbrook, of course, legendary Eagles player and All Pro
in his own right. Remember the Eagles Hall of Fame
he joins us year on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Um, okay,
in the short term, Noel, Sean, Jeffrey and falls has
looked like Rams, Nick Foles or early when he got
(01:43:58):
the job Nick Foles. Um, what do you think they're
gonna look like when they play against them? The Falcons
team who thought they probably thinks they should have beaten
him right to beat the Rams and probably felt like
they should have beaten the Eagles in Philadelphia. Give me
your sense of what we should expect from this offense
with you don't have the same you know, play callers necessarily,
no Frank reich back, their quarterback coach gone as well,
(01:44:21):
and you don't have all the same personnel. How they're
gonna look We we the first couple weeks of the season,
you know, the Birds, they didn't look very good. Um
in the preseason and in particular Nick just didn't look
like himself, didn't look like the Super Bowl winning quarterback.
But you didn't have your starting receiver, as you didn't
have your complete offensive line Jason Peters wasn't out there,
(01:44:43):
You didn't have your full set of running backs, You
didn't really game plan very much for the games, and
so there are a lot of different things that would
make a quarterback like Nick Fole's not look very good.
I think when you come back into this first game
of the regular season, you have a different bactive. If
you have everyone back healthy, you have all those guys
(01:45:03):
except for Carson Wentz on the field. You have an
opportunity for Doug Peterson over the last week and a half,
the game plan against a defense that your face in
the postseason last year, I think we'll see a totally
different football team. And I think you also noticed this
defense has gotten better. They were very good defense last year,
the Eagles were, but I think this defense has gotten
(01:45:24):
better from last year, and so they'll continue to go
out there and try to attack Matt Ryan and make
it uncomfortable for him. You know, it's interesting, Um, the
Eagles had so many injuries last year and win a
Super Bowl. I remember the year after you guys got
to Super Bowl, you guys had a bunch of injuries
which led to the six and ten season. Right, Um,
But but if there is a if there's a teaching point,
(01:45:44):
if they go a beat up coming here, talk to
our guys about what you learned about about the season
after the super Bowl. What's what's the lesson? Well, it
probably would have started, hopefully they would have brought me
in right after the super Bowl, so they can not
understand that. I know, you guys gonna bask in the
glory of winning this thing, but if you want to
(01:46:05):
have a long term success, you want to have longevity
at the top of this thing, you have to get
the work right now. You don't have time, and you
know you have a couple of weeks a month to
enjoy this thing, but you got to get right back
to work because now you're gonna face teams on a
different level. No one's gonna take you lightly. No one's
gonna overlook at over and overlook you. You're the super
Bowl champion. And then as you start the season, you
(01:46:28):
have to understand that again there's gonna be ups and downs,
expectations may change. Let's stay together as a team. Let's
take together as a unit. Let's not allow the media
or outside forces to divide us, and let's do what
we do well. We play football as a family together.
If we do that, then we have a chance in
every single game. And it won't be easy, but we
can do it. We did the same thing last year
(01:46:50):
and I think we can get it done. That would
be my complete message to the team. All Right, you're
also gonna be appearing in Philadelphia on behalf of Crown Royal.
You're just doing it for the purple bags that were
doing for Crowd Royal does have a nice purple bag.
You certainly like that, but no, I'm appearing with Crowd
Royal for the Crown Royal Water Break And basically Crown
(01:47:10):
Royal is introducing the first off the field water Bacon
water break and we kind of all understand what a
water break is on the field, chance to hydrate and
get some rest, kind of let the load off just
a little bit, but we want to be able to
do that off this field as well. The Crown Royal
has done a great job of basically introducing the opportunity
to drink responsibly, enjoy your game dame, your game day
(01:47:35):
athletic alcoholic beverages and make sure that you stay hydrated.
So in between your drinks, make sure did you hydrate.
Drink a glass of water. Drink a bottle of water
and drink responsibly and moderate your drinking, not go overboard.
You want to enjoy the entire experience, the pre game,
the game day experience as well as a post game experience.
And the only way you're able to do that as
(01:47:57):
if you stay hydrated. So take a Crown warter frown
royal water break. If you do that, you'll be able
to enjoy all of it. You're kind of cocaine that um.
Maybe a little crown on the rock, crown little crows crown,
not crown neat crown on the rocks, just to to
to get a little bit of a cooling effect. Your
(01:48:18):
expectations for Thursday in Philadelphia are what for the Eagles.
There's going to be a siding time, banner goes up,
the team goes out there and they play a great game.
Hopefully they don't make too many mistakes and they find
a way to get a win. That's the most important thing.
One of the all time greats wearing a Philadelphia Eagle uniform,
A Hall of Famer again, us ready for the football
season on behalf of the Crown Royal. Brian Westbrook, Brian
(01:48:40):
loved watching you play love talking ball with you. Thanks
so much for joining us. Take care, let's get to
Dan buy or find out what else is going on
the world with sports Tevie would have got. Yeah, a
lot of football action, including in Seattle where Seahawks safety
Earl Thomas not only ended his hold out. But it's
on the practice field today. Not traded by the Seahawks.
But it's not like they didn't get any offers. Multiple
reports that the Seahawks got an offer from the Dallas
(01:49:01):
Cowboys for a second round pick for Thomas's services that
was thought to be the asking price all along. The
Seahawks reportedly said no, and the Cowboys are no longer
interested in dealing for the veteran safety. Seahawks have another
injury to deal with kJ Wright, the linebacker, gonna miss
their game against Denver. That opens the door for rookie
linebacker Shakim Griffin, who's going to start Sunday in their
(01:49:22):
opener against the Denver Broncos. A lot of noise coming
out of Pittsburgh, but you won't hear or see Levyan
Bell reputting to the Pittsburgh Steelers his agent speaking with
Sirius x M NFL Radio alluded that they may want
to continue their holdout into the regular season to avoid
putting mileage on Bell's tires. His teammates not too happy,
including one Marquise Pouncey, who said, at some point, quote
(01:49:46):
you need to say, I just want to play football,
end quote. Drama in the Steel City Giants, Tenant Evan
Ingram clear concussion protocol will play Sunday in their opener
against Jacksonville. Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, Henrik Stenson, and Paul
Casey named his captain's picks to the European Ryder Cup team.
Indians topped the Royals today three one. The Red Sox
were nine eight winners against the Atlanta Braves. The Ryder
(01:50:09):
Cup end of the month hard sale for me. I
gotta be honest with you. Well, think about it this way.
Tiger is gonna be playing, Phil is gonna be playing,
and it's in France, so it's gonna be in the morning, morning,
morning is good. Yeah, it was good for me. That
works for me. That's good. But it's hard. I mean,
like listen, um, it's also it's gonna conflict in some
light way with with college football and with NFL football, Right,
(01:50:31):
I mean, you just will. So it's a hard one
for me. Just tough time here. I wish it was
in August, she was in August or during the week. Yeah,
it's it's arguably and I think that it is the biggest,
the best names. This is the Ryder Cup loaded with
the best names that we've ever had in golf. All right,
here's what I want from you guys. Okay, this is
what I want. I want to get this Tomlin thing
(01:50:53):
in a second with with Terry bradshe on what he said. Okay,
but let's open up all of our mics, okay, and
let's just get kind of early leans. Forget about lines
early leans for these games. I'm so fired up about
the NFL getting on the way and this is a
big NFL weekend. Falcons Eagles tomorrow. Start with you buyer Falcons, Eagles, Falcons,
(01:51:16):
Ramos Falcons music, make it three Falcons? Wow? Wow? On
my early lean is is Falcons as well. I think
the Falcons are uh, you know, they seem to figure
it out late in the year and Eagles aren't whole yet. Um.
And I don't think crowds win a game. I don't.
I don't think the idea of unveiling a banner wins
(01:51:36):
a game San Francisco Minnesota. Anybody want to pick San
Francisco to go in there and beat Minnesota in the year,
anybody buyer no music? That's gonna be a not for me. Okay,
here's one that people people aren't talking about now. Look,
he put up a bunch of numbers last year against him.
He also has J. J. Watt back. Houston, New England.
New England dropped in the early game at home last
(01:51:58):
year two years ago. Well maybe last year they were
the two and two out of the first four last
year two and two. Yeah, they played played New England
really well last year. I think they have they win
the game. Yeah, I think they might. I'm not sure
if they won that game or if he just put
up huge numbers, but everybody put up huge numbers against
that that defense. Houston, New England. Who you got? Um?
I like the Patriots music. I'm gonna go with Dan
(01:52:21):
here gut reaction. It's gonna be Houston. Yeah, my my
guts telling me that Houston that that the Patriots aren't
quite right just yet. Maybe I'm I'm wrong again. Early
lean Patriots is six step point favorite, Pittsburgh. We've talked
all day about Levi On Bell not showing so far. Bovada,
by the way, still has uh game one as the
(01:52:43):
favorite for when Levian Bell shows up, but it's getting
late early. Taken on Cleveland team that played him close
first game last year and now Levy on Bell's team.
Offensive line teammates are like that guy. Uh, Cleveland a
four point dog. But we're not talking lines, Just straight
up Pittsburgh Cleveland. Most I think Pittsburgh is gonna win fire. Yeah,
(01:53:04):
if it's gosh, I'll lenk Cleveland, I'll just leave Cleveland.
We're not We're not We're not holding you in this.
This is I realized that as I was about to say,
and I'm like, yeah, yeah, you're going to You're going
You're going all in musical about you Steelers. Yeah. I
I do kind of think it's one of those until
further notice. Here's one that I think is off. I
(01:53:26):
just think it's off. Cincinnati's taken on Indie Indians at
three point favorite. I just there's nothing. I thought Andrew
Luck looked better. Um, but I don't think they're good.
And I think as much as everyone has already declared
Marvin Lewis dead. They weren't terrible last year, and they're
going to be better this They should be better this year.
(01:53:46):
They're much healthier than they are were at the end
of last year. I love like since to me, this
is the one I If I'm gonna bet on an
underdog on the road, that's the one I bet on.
I'm with you. I like Cincinnati or Pittsburgh to win
the division. I said Pittsburgh this past weekend. But I'm
starting to feel the Bengals a little bit. Jacksonville Giants,
Ryan Music, Jacksonville Giants, Real League Ramos, Jags byre Jaguars.
(01:54:13):
I like the Giants in that one. Buffalo Buffalo Baltimore
Buyer Ravens. Yeah, does any anybody Nobody's like Buffalo? Anybody
going like I'm taking Nathan Peterman on the road? Anyone? No, No,
we saw I did that. We saw last road do worse.
This is like surgery by Peter bid against this Ravens defense. Night.
(01:54:37):
Well done, Tennessee Miami Tennessee team like, oh yeah, Tennessee
made the playoffs and won a playoff game last year.
Tennessee Miami buyer um I leaned Titans, Titan. I lean
Titans as well. What about you do we have to pick? Yeah,
this is a game that's like, hey, somebody's calling this game.
(01:54:58):
It's like, man, I'm getting paid for this the business,
my moment. That is the kind of game I'm calling
later on this year, I'm doing the Chicago Miami game.
Doing sideline for that one. Um, I kind of feel
like Miami. I don't know why, no real reason why.
It just kind of feels like Miami Tampa, New Orleans Ords,
big favorite. Ryan Fitzpatrick fits back at the helm. Anybody
(01:55:21):
picking tamp on the road. Yeah, no, nobody doing that.
All right, now it gets super interested. Let me go
a cup more not interesting games. Anybody taking Chicago over
Green Bay? I think it's gonna be very close. You do, Yeah,
I really did. Really I don't. I don't in Green Bay? No,
I don't. I think Aaron Rodgers, No, he's got a
really good team. Um, anybody's gonna tak Chicago. No? No, okay,
(01:55:47):
Washington Arizona another game we kind of care about. Does
have Alex Smith. People forget Alex Smith. Maybees the starting
quarterback in the Niners. He had like a perfect game
against the Arizona Cardinals back. That was like his last
start before he got hurt with the Diners taken on
Arizona rebuilding. But they do have Bradford, they got David
Johnson back, they got Larry Fitzgerald back. I love Arizona
that game. Just love him, love him. Anybody have a
(01:56:10):
strong leaning either way. I like Arizona. Probably don't love them,
but I like them. Music, Redskins, I'll take washing it too, Okay.
And here's the stint game. Uh No, Mark Slayer has
this one. Seattle, Seattle, Denver, Seattle, Seattle, Denver, huge Seattle fan,
Dan Buyer lead us off. It's lean towards of Seahawks.
(01:56:32):
The unknowns, Yeah, unknowns, like this is my thing is
and tell me this is faulty logic. The logic is,
I haven't heard of any of the most most of
these Seattle players, but most of the guys that just
left Seattle, we're guys that no one had ever heard
of before they became legion of boom. It leads you
to think maybe I should buy it to Seattle. That's
(01:56:54):
not a bad theory, not a Bad's gotta get pressure
on the quarterback, that's the key. What about you music
would you like? I'll go Seahawks. Denver is gonna have
a long season. I like Seattle, Kansas City Chargers I
like I like the over by the way, it's forty
eight is the over Runner Chargers. I like Chargers too,
but again it's chargers are early in the season, right,
(01:57:15):
and the charges against chefs who they never beat the
home Okay, I like charges, which I think when when
they travel, they're they're not as good chargers. Uh yeah,
I mean they've had trouble at home too, and they're
playing kind of road games when they play at home,
although not a ton of Chiefs fans. It's not like
Eagles or Cowboys Cowboys Carolina. I like Dallas on the road. Yeah,
(01:57:38):
m hmm, buyer, I mean music. Sorry, I'll go Panthers.
I'll take Carolina. I'm like Carolina guy too. See, they're
all they're kind of interesting. All right. I give my
take on Terry brad Shop what he said about Mike
Tomlin plus a controversial move just made even more controversial.
We'll talk about it next. Fox Sports Radio has the

apparently is National Cheese Pizzaday. Here's the way I feel
about cheese pizza, same way I feel about plain iced tea.
Plain iced tea exists in this world for one purpose,
to be sweetened with sugar or with lemonade. Right, Cheese
pizza exists in this world for one purpose, and that's
to have pepperonia or some sort of meat added to it.
That that's how I feel. But but happy National Cheese
(01:58:42):
Pizza Day to you. Um I said. This is started
the show. Terry Bradshaw once again has come out as
critical of Mike Tomlin. He said this on Dance Leios
show on our FM affiliate in San Diego for a
tough sucker and I was afraid of it, and we
played our ass off farm because we feared and I
(01:59:05):
don't see that with this guy. He's chest bumping and
all that, and I'm just I'm sorry, but he's not
my kind of coach. Yeah, it's okay, it doesn't have
to be. You don't have to play for him. A
little bit of this is is like what it's like
the parent these days. I don't know how you were parented.
I was scared of my dad, Frank. I was just
scared of my mom. Right, if you you'd screw up
my if I screw up at school. I hear my
(01:59:27):
dad wore floor shymes and he always kind of drag
his feet when he walked. And when I heard him
walking up the front walkway and I had the bedroom
in the front, I was like, damn, there's going to
be hell to pay. Now we gotta do you know.
Now we've got to do timeouts and take away things
and kind of do mental torture when you can't do
physical right, you don't want them to be scared of you.
You want to teach them and educate. Parenting is changing
(01:59:48):
and evolving, just like coaching is as well. The Pittsburgh
stew has made the playoffs eight of the eleven years
he's been there, last four years in a row, in
a league in IT and a division in which uh
they've had the Ravens. They've even had the Bengals have
been super talented and in a conference where you got
Peyton Manning with two different teams and Tom Brady like
(02:00:11):
they've been right there, won a Super Bowl, lost Super
in the last decade, So we might not be your
type of coach. Seems to be working on. My car
shopping can be confusing. Not any more True Price from

confident car buying experience. Dan Byro would have got no
more news from Nike. They'll debut television to add voice
(02:00:34):
by Colin Kaepernick during tomorrow night's season opening game between
the Falcons and Eagles, So we'll see the visual, the
video aspect of the new Nike ad campaign. I've seen it.
I've seen on the Twitter sphere. It's a really well
done ad, really well done ad. I just the thing
that and look, the NFL did not come out negative
at all about it, but I would guess privately, behind
(02:00:56):
the scenes, the NFL not terribly psyched about a guy
who's suing the league being made into the centerpiece for
their thirtieth anniversary camp of Just Do It campaign. A
lot of the news out of Seattle today was that
Earl Thomas entered his holdout was on the practice field.
But other news from Seahawk Land as rookie linebacker Shakim
Griffin's gonna start Sunday against the Broncos in place of
(02:01:17):
the injured kJ Wright. Chim driven unportion only has one hand, right,
that's I mean, just an unbelievable story. The question with
with them can they pressure the quarterback and can they
protect the quarterback in Seattle? But this is, like, am
this is almost as good as the Jim Abbots story.
Like I will say, being a picture and being able
(02:01:38):
to throw a no hitter with one hand is a
little bit better, but not that much better. I mean,
I want compare one handed guys, but incredible stuff from
guys that were born with one hand. A couple of
notes from college football First and Tallahassee for the Standard.
Coach Willie Taggart says Virginia Tech faked injuries to slow
down the Seminar offense in Monday's game, telling reporters on
the weekly ACC conference called Today Quotes it happened to often,
(02:02:00):
so it's hard not to think that they faked it
happened too often. Yeah, it was hot, it was muggy.
There was some cramping. Some of us fake someone's real.
You know what else is fake? The Seminoles offense, I
mean half their plays went for zero yards or less,
just throwing the ball latterly north and south? Will he
not east and west? The cam Akers run was their
(02:02:22):
only offense that uh yard or Kansas A D. Jeff
Long says they continue to evaluate the football program without
a football program, Yeah, without a predetermined timeline. Kansas dropped
their season opener to Nicols State. That said, called Jeff
bad second lost to an FCS school. They have one
Big twelve win in the last three seasons. He's a
(02:02:43):
great guy. Um, he's tried to build up from the
ground up. Is not working out. It's just it's just
not um. You know, part of it is their facilities investment,
but part of it is they just haven't been able
to to find the right guy to get the right
players in there. Man. Nicols State, I mean they I
did Big twelve rankings and I don't even know if
(02:03:05):
I'll put them ten of a ten team league. They
scheduled Nicols State because dime Tech was not available. Yeah,
get Nicols. Okay, Finally, after advice from mccardiologists, Dodgers closer
Kenley Jansen, John finally got it. Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen
likely going to skip this weekend's trip to Denver to
face the Rockies because he well, he went into a
(02:03:26):
FHIB last time he pitched there right like. It wasn't
like he had a little epic. He went to a
FHIB like arterial fibrilation. That's when your heart like there's yeah,
that's I'm gonna skip that trip. But uh, this is
big for the Dodgers who are trailing the red hot Rockies.
Backing out there and pressed that the press. October, it's
(02:03:46):
ro October. That's me and Ramos now because I'm now
a Rockies fan because my boy holiday places in the Rockies.
So it's me against that. This is much like when
the Chargers play the Rams. Another one that's gonna be
me against Ramos. Mono, he Mono, going head head to head,
head to head. That's week three of the season, right,
all right, we'll get you ready. Jay Glazier is going
to join us in the studio for an hour tomorrow
(02:04:09):
our and then and then he's probably gonna put me
in some sort of hold and I'll tap out at
the end. Jay Glazer for an hour download the All
Ball Podcast. Football season begins tomorrow. We'll try and make
you and maybe lose you some money. This is the
Dougout Lip Show.
